(00:22):
of the Doug Gotli Show on Fox Sports Radio. Boom,
What Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I
hate to say I told you so. Yeah, I know
I picked the Chargers to win the game, But I
did tell you. Pat Mahomes is the deal. Have gun,

(00:45):
will travel. Wow, anybody want to Anybody want to cover
Tyreek Hill? Everybody can cover Tyreek Hill. Wow. Uh. It's
ruling the season, which means the Chiefs look like world beaters.
Stop you've heard that before. Still looks a little different
with fifteen at the Helm than deal with Alex Smith
at the Helm. We'll get to the Dallas Cowboys being

(01:06):
exactly what they thought we thought they would be. They
are who are they thought they? We? We they are?
We thought they were? The The Panthers did not let
them off the hook. We'll get you ready for tonight's Now,
it's not the conclusion of Dolphins Titans that actually did
finally finish up. We'll get you ready for tonight's double header.
The Jets against the Lions, the Rams against the Raiders,

(01:28):
and the Raiders is a great place to start, because
everybody was clowning the Raiders, and if they lose tonight
and they don't have a pass rush, they will clown
the Raiders yet again. But maybe I saw a different
game than everybody anybody else saw. I've been trying to
explain this whole salary cap thing and explain what John

(01:50):
Gruden said last week. But what John Gruden said last
week is in fact accurate. You can't have two guys
to cap of your salary cap. Can't do it. The
only way you can overpay one of these defensive players
is if you have a quarterback on the rookie scale.

(02:11):
That's how the Eagles did it, That's how the Bears
did it, and that's why the Packers couldn't do it,
and that's why the Raiders couldn't do it. And I
don't understand why more people don't figure that out. And
if you're going to go like, what could I have
one or could I have the other? Just think of
this as the car analogy, right, who's more valuable? Really

(02:36):
good to great quarterback? We're really good to great linebacker,
defensive ent um. Okay, Khalil Mack played as good at
first half as anybody we've ever seen. Were Okay saying
that was it helped by the fact that it was
just great play calling early from Naggy to start the

(02:57):
game and they marked down the field and score. Sure.
Was it helped by Aaron Rodgers getting hurt. Absolutely, But
Khalil Mack looked amazing in the first half. Also Deshaun Kaiser.
When he stripped Deshaun Kaiser, it's Deshaun Kaiser, right. He
went from starting quarterback of the Browns to having to

(03:18):
battle to other guys to be a backup of the
Packers for a reason. But even if we give Khalil
Mack the rightful credit for having the most amazing first
half we've ever seen, when number twelve came back in,

(03:39):
Khalil Mack was marginalized. They go no huddle and he
ran out of gas and he had very little to
no effect on the rest of the game, one that
he had dominated for the first half and twelve on
one leg let a miraculous come back. I don't know
if you guys know this, but in the history of
the Green Bay Packers, they were zero and one oh

(04:02):
four when trailing by seventeen or more points entering the
fourth quarter until last That's because they had Arion Rogers,
who I've told you is the best I've ever seen
play the position. And last night I almost wished with
Michelle de Foia he would have stayed out there like

(04:22):
a gladiator and said, are you not entertained? Not only
did they not only did they score, but they scored
more than two minutes to go, and and Clay Matthews said,
one of the dumbest penalties in the last ten years.

(04:44):
The National Football League. Can't touch a quarterback now, especially
after releases the ball he launches himself. He look, he
didn't get injected. They're like, look, Mitchell Robinsky stinks. Naggie
went into it, went in to cover the when they
had a seventeen nothing lead, they got super conservative. They
went full Andy Reid playoff mode. In the first game

(05:07):
of the season, and Aaron Rodgers came back in one
and left like two minutes and fourteen seconds to go
on the clock. I was just stupid. Stupid. Okay, is
so good at stupid. But here's the car analogy. I
had friends at college that would have better rims than me.

(05:27):
They would have better sound systems to me. Any Listen,
I don't like the sound systems where the windows rattle.
I don't. It doesn't sound good to me. But everyone
knows what the upgraded Harmon, Carmen, whatever sound systems are, right.
It just sounds usul like. Man, that's amazing. And people
do this at their home as well. You'll get into

(05:48):
their theater room and feel that subwoffer in the wall.
What do you think? See that? That's my sound bar?
This is But you know what, if your TV is
of top quality, it doesn't matter what the sounds like.
If the car. I've never understood guys that will get
a Chevy Nova put some rims on in a system

(06:08):
and it's still a Nova. I much rather have Alexis
with stock rims and the stock system. Do you know why?
Because it's Alexis, because it's a Caddy, because it's a
pick any of the top line cars. I'd rather have
the better car. And then listen, if I can get
some really nice rims, but I don't need the nicest rims.

(06:32):
A defensive end, a linebacker, a Khalil mac, he's a
sweet set of rims. You're great, great. You can actually
make the case that the defensive end is more even
star running back, right, because what anyone who's had a
really nice set of twenties or twenty two s. Nos,

(06:53):
you get the performance tires and it's a little bit
bump your a ride because they're a little bit of
a pain in the ass. And oh yeah, by the way,
the tires were out like that like ten thousand, fifteen
thousand miles. But fine, I'll go with the defensive end.
Linebacker is the rims, and the wide receiver or the
running back is the system. Look, if I could have

(07:16):
all of it, I would. But we got a budget, right,
we got a budget. We got like thirty five grand.
And what I could do is I could get a
twenty dollar car and add all those things on. Or
I could get a used luxury car with stock rims,
stock system, and you know what, I could drive a

(07:38):
two fifty miles and eventually add some rims. When my
I need new tires and live with the system that
just sounds good. Doesn't sound like I'm at a concert.
That's me. This is the way the salary cap works.
Look around the NFL. You don't you have one or

(07:58):
the other. Or you have the Patriots, which is you
have no star players on defense. You have one star
to star players on offense, but neither really make top
level money. And because they've taken less money, they've been
successful for years. But everybody else, you got Rogers or
Matt Stafford, or Derek Carr or Drew Brees, how does

(08:20):
that work out for their defense? Or you have a
rookie quarterback, a quarterback on a rookie scale. And then
the ultimate is if you have like Dak Prescott, right,
you got a quarterback making fourth round money that you
can't renegotiate and you can fail out the rest of
your roster. But you know, you find people freaking out
about the Raiders are freaking out about the Packers. The

(08:44):
Packers didn't offer two first round picks for a reason.
One they didn't want to give up two first round picks,
and two they weren't gonna give him ninety million dollars.
They don't have it. Can't feel the team like there's
a what is that guy? Why do they have that guy?
Because they couldn't afford to go and get or placement elsewhere.
You know, I'm redoing a house, That's what we're doing.

(09:06):
And we're gonna move into this new house and I
want to get the bathrooms done. I want to get
the windows done. But I'm not going to get the
bathrooms in the windows done. Do you know why? I
don't know any more money, No more money, there's no
more money. Who would you like to redo these bathrooms? Would?
And I know how much it costs, and that's a
decent price for it. I can't afford it. It's called budget.

(09:31):
And if you want to say, well the Rams, First
of all, the Rams did something stupid in ciding Todd
Gurley to an extension a year before they had to.
And maybe they think, hey, we're getting ahead of the market.
But the Rams are able to do so because they
got Jared Goff on a rookie deal and they took
a ton of risk within Dominican Sioux for a year. Dude,
the Rams are gonna have to rebuild half of their
team next year, and eventually Jared Goff is gonna get

(09:54):
his whether he's good or not, He's gonna get bird
in a year. So I mean, look, the Chiefs are
same thing. They got a quarterback at a rookie scale.
So instead of freaking out over Khalil Mack and his

(10:14):
incredible first half and the fact that the Bears look
like world beaters and may well be better than we thought,
understand that you can't have both. You just can't do it.
You can't do it. You can't have a a star
quarterback in his second or third contract and have a
position player on the defensive side played paid at the

(10:37):
top level. Of those defensive ends and linebackers. It just
doesn't work. That the finances don't work. And if I'm
if I'm forced to do one or the other, I
would take twelve over anybody playing the quarterback position. And
I would definitely take twelve over Khalil Mack. And the

(11:01):
only way in which that could have happened that he
could have been he could have been in Green Bay
was somebody went to Aaron Rodgers and said, hey, man,
we know we haven't put a great team around you,
but will you take a Tom Brady type of deal?
And he didn't want to take. You made it very
clear and do not want to take a Tom Brady
type of deal. The idea of a salary cap is

(11:23):
so that the league remains super competitive. And you know what,
it works. It works. That's why half the teams have
made the playoffs last year won't make the playoffs this year. Right.
The NBA has tried to convince you, convince you it's

(11:43):
good for the health of a sport that you can
get all the players on one team. Is it? Is it?
I mean, honestly, is it? The numbers are are going
to be at an all time high. You know why
because you don't know. Did you have any idea that
Tampa would walk into the New Orleans and just mop

(12:04):
the field with the Saints Ryan fits Magic. Be sure
to catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show
weekdays in noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports
Radio and the I Heart Radio app. Let's discuss the
NFL because what a day? What a day? And who
better to talk with? And Michael Lombardi, a former jail manager.

(12:25):
Just so you know, his new book is out tomorrow.
It's called Green Iron Genius, A Masterclass in Winning championships
and building dinasases in the NFL, and Michael, you don't
need to you don't, you don't need anything for your ego.
I just want to tell you there's two gms that
listen to the show, and one said you should have
Michael on more often. He really has a brilliant football
mind and understands how to convey it to the average fans.

(12:48):
So anyway, others are fans of your work. Um let's
let's let's start with what we saw last night. I
have said before and I don't have nearly the depth.
I don't even try to compare football knowledge. Just Aaron
Rodgers to me, is the best I've ever seen play.
I understand that Tom Brady is more accomplished. How would
you contextualize what we saw last night? You know, I

(13:10):
thought it was truly amazing. I mean, look, as a
fan of football, you've gotta love Aaron Rodgers because what
he's able to do with his feet in that offense. Actually,
this is horrible thing to say, but him getting hurt
helped the Packers because they got away from that that
trying to put him under center and he was in
shotgun the whole time, and they just let him sling
it around, which is what he does. And he moves

(13:31):
with his feet. Because the Packers skill players are not
that talented, their scheme is a little limited, and so
when he moves to his feet and then he has
an incredible pinpoint accuracy, duck, he makes their offense go.
So I think that was what people saw. What I
think people missed last night more than anything, was that
the Chicago Bears and Mitchell Traviski is going to take

(13:53):
a while to get fixed. They had they had a
great plan to start the game. You know, they are
all kinds of motions, and they got some miss matches.
Their first their scripted plays were fantastic, but when the
script ran out, they you know, I think Naggy got
a little tight with his play calling. But he I mean,
look that last drive in the two minutes, he looked awful.

(14:13):
He looked completely rattled. And it's not like he was
facing a you know, the the Bears there defensively, no,
not at all. And I mean this is why he
only started thirteen games in college. I mean, there's a
reason for that, Doug, and it sewed up on the
field on Sunday. He's not a quick minded player. He's
a good athlete trying to play quarterbacks. He's not a

(14:34):
good quarterback at this time. His decision making and what
Matt Maggie has to do is he has to create
throws for Trabinsky that makes him throw the ball immediately.
Play action. Okay, you're throwing it here. We've got the
flats gonna be wide open. You've gotta bang it here.
So the way he has to script practice is he's
got to make practice perfect so that that rep that

(14:54):
Trapinsky gets in practice becomes an actual rep in the game. Man,
that's hard, hard to do. And I've feel bad for
Matt Maggie. People were getting on his play calling, but
he knows his quarterback. I was of the opinion I'm
saying to myself, why is he not playing Trabisky in
the summer. The guys played thirteen games in college. He
needs all the reps he can get. Now, I know
why he doesn't want everybody to understand. He's gonna have

(15:16):
to view smoke and mirrors to make it easy for
Trabisky to make pros. And the other factor is when
Trabisky's got a play faster, he loses his accuracy. He's
nine for oh. I think he was a lamb for
twelve in the first quarter, and then by the end
of the game he was five for eleven, average in
two yards in attempt. That's not going to get it done. Uh.
There were there were many at the end of the

(15:37):
first half that said, see, Jon Gruden's an idiot, and
the Packers they're soft, They're scared to make a move
that could change their team. The Bears look like geniuses
for bringing in Khalil Mack, and everybody else is a
bunch of dopes. How do you do? How did you react? Look?
I thought, you know, I tweeted out early in the game.
I mean Khalil Mack, I mean he I'm sure he

(15:58):
got credit for selling hotdogs a lambo to last night.
I mean everything was Julio Mac. He's a great player,
don't get me wrong. I thought Brian Bolaga blocked up
really well. The strip the strip fumble, I mean Kaiser
went into him and he walked into him, and Kaiser's
more pocket a where he doesn't get there. And then
on the interception, I mean it's a screen pass and
the kid made a great play. Look, Mac's gonna get

(16:18):
his place I thought Bologga did a good job. I
thought there was times they could throw the ball in
the pocket. And here's the most important fact that when
you have a twenties and nothing lead in the NFL,
and you've got dominating pass rushers and you can't create
turnovers to get the ball out, then all of a sudden,
that's what's wrong. The whole concept of the West Coast
offense is not about plays. It's about a theory. We're

(16:40):
gonna build the lead in the first half and our
pass rushers are gonna dominate in the second. That didn't
happen in Chicago. Now, fairdis for mac. Green Bay is
one of the slipperiest fields in football to play on.
It's hard to get traction. Guys slipped left and right.
You saw it last night. The footing is not always
good there. I don't know why players don't like to
use those one inch cleeps there, and because of it,

(17:00):
it's not always easy to generate rush. Look, it takes
a team to be Aaron Rodgers, not just one player.
Let's go to New England where um DeShawn Watson last
time around lit them up. This time not nearly as much.
I felt like he was a lot. He he was
more inaccurate than I remember him being. And maybe it's
because that you know the stretch that he played last year,

(17:21):
he set the world on fire. What's your reaction to
how Deshaun Watson looked against the Patriots. I thought the
Patriots did a great job of rushing the pastor like
a field gold or a punt. I mean, they went
straight at him. They didn't give him those pockets to
move in. He created a tight pocket. And I agree
his accuracy was not good. I was expecting him to
be more accurate with the football. He got didn't get

(17:42):
some help. I mean even DeAndre Hopkins dropped a few passes.
I think they really missed go for to take the
top off the defense a little bit. But no, I
think Watson was right when he critiqued himself after the game.
He did not play well. That game was there for
the taking. If he plays better, they've got a chance
to win the game. Now, Brady was what for eleven
on third down? And anytime you can get or four

(18:02):
for fourteen on third down, anytime you can get Brady
at that bad on fourth on third down, you got
a chance to win the game. And because Watson didn't
play well. That's why the Texans didn't win. Uh, Pat
Mahomes did. Pat Mahomes things that made that made some
amazing throws. Now the game should have been closer. I
mean the charges dropping four touchdown balls and dropping a

(18:22):
punt when when when it felt like they were about
they finally got to stop. But they couldn't tackle Tyreek Hill,
couldn't cover tackle Tyreek Hill. And Mahomes just makes some
throws that very few in the NFL could make. Is
this is this just hey first chance to see him
and people will catch up to him. Or is Pat
Mahomes really that special for Kansas City? I think Andy

(18:44):
reads a really good coach, and any Read coaches quarterbacks
better better than most people in the NFL. He's done
it with Donovan McNabb where he designed an on offense
for McNabb that was telling for McNabb. He did it
with Alex Smith where he divided designed it often. And
I said all summer that Andy Reid was sitting on
a fence in Kansas City that was just from my homes,
and it turned out to be true. He's got a
unique skill set in terms of getting the quarterback to

(19:07):
utilize his play with his arm and talent and with
Tarik Kill and the other players they have on offense,
they become a challenge and he has one. I think
he's lying out two against the against the Chargers. He
knows how to play them. He understands it didn't turn
the ball over. The Charges are built on the Peak
Harrell principle of defense, which is, hey, we the ball

(19:27):
is what we want. They couldn't turn the ball over,
they couldn't make plays, and it was typical Charger football.
I mean and Mr Field go when they got a
chance to get back in it. You know, the Chargers
have this rep for being a really good team, yet
they don't play like a good team when it matters
most three and it wasn't that close in Baltimore. Are
the Ravens that good or the Bills that bad? Look?

(19:49):
I think the Bills have to decide that they needed
just take a step back. They need turnovers, they need
to be able to play good in the red zone.
That's how they made the playoffs last year, and they
protected the ball and and yesterday they got caught into
a world when they were not going to beat the Ravens.
No matter what happened yesterday. Nathan Peterman, you know, it's
a nice story. I think he's a backup quarterback at best.

(20:09):
I think it's time to move on with Josh Allen.
He's not ready, but they don't have any other answer.
They're gonna have to find a way to develop an
offense around Josh allen skill set and hope their defense
can create some turnovers. Baltimore is a scary team. They're
very good in September because they're long in the tooth
and those older players are fresh in September, and they're
gonna be hard to play because they can rush the
past to the physical and they can stop the run.

(20:32):
And if Flacco plays anywhere near the way he played yesterday,
they've got a chance to win the North. I want
to not freak out about New Orleans because last year
they were owing to although the first week of the season,
Sam Bradford played the game of his life and it was,
you know, opening up a new building. The whole thing
was great. Um, then they lost New England at home,
which which can happen to anybody. To give up forty

(20:53):
eight at home to Ryan Fitzpatrick and Tampa. Please tell
me that New Orleans is better than they looked yesterday.
Well they better hope they are, because when you know,
when they started playing man demand, they couldn't win the
matchups on the outside. The Tampa receivers were better than
the corners for New Orleans. I mean, that's that's a tragedy.
And when you can't play man demand, that's a hard
thing to do in the NFL. And when you can't
rush the pastor and Ryan fitzpatrick average is over fourteen

(21:16):
yards per past attempt that he's never done even when
he played at Harvard. That's remarkable. So look, this is
one of those games where Sean Payton's gonna learn from it.
You learn about your team. Youve got to control the
pace of the game a little bit better. When you
score forward, you should win in the NFL, but not
when you give up forty seven. I think this is
one of those things where the Saints played good this summer,
but it didn't translate in the opening day of the year,

(21:37):
especially they got off to the good start, they got
to leave people think, oh, this is gonna be an
easy way, all of a sudden, I gotta to dig
deep and figure out how they're gonna turn this thing around.
Michael Lombardi, former Gentil manager in the NFL, is new
book Gridiron Genius, A masterclass and winning championships and building
dynasties in nash Football League. It's available tomorrow. Make sure
you pick it up. Rams Raiders tonight, let's start with
the Rams kind of quickly. Uh, they're going on in.

(22:00):
You know, they go over Marcus Peterson and donmin Quin,
sue a key to leave guys on on one year deals.
They even re up Todd Gurley a year before they
ever even had to consider it. Uh, they're going all in. Um.
Is Jared Goff, though, good enough to carry them? Well?
I think I think that's the fundamental question. I think
the Rams are banking on that he is. I think

(22:21):
Sean McVeigh is good enough to help Jared Goff. But
one thing I know, Doug, everybody studied RAM tapes all offseason,
and RAM tape was the most popular tape defensive coaches
watched in every building of the other thirty one teams
in the NFL. So tonight they're gonna have to come
out and the game starts at him with Todd Gurley.
The reason they paid Gurley early was because he is
the straw that stirs the drink. He averages over ten

(22:42):
yards to catch whenever he carried the ball seventeen times
and more last year. The Rams want for the Raiders tonight.
They've got to force this game away from Gurley, stop
him on screen, stop him when he's extended from the formation,
and stop him in the run game, and then make
goff have to hurry up golf lives with play action passes.
He's a lot like Drabinsky. He's gotta have play action passes.

(23:02):
And mcday's got a steam it to where he knows
where he's gonna throw it. We'll see if he can
do it tonight. Gruden's getting a lot of heat for
trading away Kleil mac and uh and some of the
offseason moves, whether its acquisitions or what he did in
the draft. What do you think the Raiders will look
like when they take the field, noclu. I think they'll
be really well coaching on offense, I think he'll have

(23:23):
a good plan. He in no way how to attack
Wage Phillips. Will do things where he can get into
a formation where wage Phillips won't be able to blitz them.
There's certain formations that Wig doesn't want to blitz from
Johnald try to throw the ball out of those formations.
I think they'll be well coached. Hopefully they can hold
up in their offensive line against this front, especially inside.
But look, hey, the Raiders get all their money in
their offensive line right there at those the guards and

(23:43):
the two the two guards in the center. So they
can't block these guys tonight, then they're overpaying their offensive linement.
I think they'll be well coached. I think they'll be
fundamentally sound on defense. They'll make Goff have to beat them,
and if they do that, I think it will be
a good game. I really do. This book is his
first game in the year. Mcday is gonna have some
new tricks. John It's gonna have some things up to sleep.
But I think Derek Carr will play well because one

(24:03):
thing Grew is capable of doing at a high level
of coach quarterbacks. Great stuff, Michael Lombardi pick up the
Buck grid Iron Genius master Class and winning championships and
billing dynasteas in the NFL. Thanks so much of your time.
Thanks Michael Lombardi joining us. Be sure to catch live
editions of the Doug Dot Leaps Show weekdays at noon
Eastern three pm Pacific, and Now and Sharp part of

(24:28):
Undisputed said this about the New York Giants. They should
be discouraged. Um, you get your two stars, skip the
guys that you're really counting on to play well. And
they played well in the same game. And but again,
guess what it was ruined by a lie throwing a
costly pick six and Eric fly the offensive line. Odell
had eleven for a bucket level, but he drew two

(24:48):
past in appearances forty yards, so that's like a one six.
He got the better of Jalen Ramsey. I knew he
would because of the type of receiver and the way
he's built. Ram he matches up better against a Julio
or a j Green, a big body receiver. But Antonio
Brown and the old a guy that can do this,
that wiggle will cause him problems, say Kan. There are

(25:11):
very few running backs that could have made that play
that he made. Skip. They hit it up inside, keep
his shoulder square to the latt of scrimmage, skate to
the side and get down the sideline there. But a
few guys can do that. So they played well. There's
two superstars that you're counting on to play well. Played well.
Eli is what he is skilled and this is why
you can beat should be discouraged. He's not gonna turn

(25:32):
into Tom Brady. M hmm um, No, I don't think
he's Tom Brady. I Look, they still have problems in
their offensive and this whole idea of let's get a
running back, quick fix the offensive line, patch some stuff up,
and boomeray to go. I've told you guys before, like
Eli Manning hasn't been good more than he's been good

(25:54):
the past half decade. You know. It's we we do
this in sports all the time, which I never really understand,
Like we'll give people credit for winds but never credit
for losses. Like I'm okay. If you sit there and
go like, hey, Eli Manning, he's won two Super Bowls,

(26:14):
you're right, that's awesome. But it's also it's like he's
also on some level responsible for the fact that they
made the plass but once in the last seven years,
Like that's also on his watch. You can't only give
credit for the winds, right, Well, look, all the losses
aren't on him. All the winds can't be on him.
Either right, it doesn't work, by the ways, I've never

(26:36):
that's that's I think it's called circular logic or um, yeah,
circular logic. Is that what it's called. Some we looked
that up. That's what we need to do. We need
to look it up. So do I think the Giants
are in big trouble? Look, Eric Flowers was an issue.

(26:56):
He was the only guy in the offensive line, not
to me with the media, pretty obvious that they haven't
been able to fix it just yet. But I think
that there was this kind of philosophy of hey, if
we oh, ghett Odell Beckham Jr. Back, we get you know,
we got a good tight end. We got Sterling Shepherd
is a number two wide receiver. We got a good
a pass catching running back. We fixed the left side

(27:20):
of the line, all right, so we can shift to
the right side line like that. All sounds really good
in the boardroom, but kind of missing there, I mean,
really really missing, is hey, what if Eli is not
good enough anymore? Which is what we've been telling you guys,
I've been telling Giant fans no, no, no, Like is

(27:41):
it fair to say that they're their last head coach? Right?
Their last head coach. Was he a great head coach?
The answer is probably no, right, no, not so much
Ben McAdoo. But Ben McAdoo was an offensive guy. Ben

(28:02):
McAdoo and the general manager and the ownership group, they
had all decided they needed to see what they had
for life beyond Eli. They had all they all decided
that Eli, like his best days are behind him. In
this very same chair, in this very same microphone, I

(28:22):
told you that last year they should when they were
owing four and then they lost to the charges at
home and moved to oh and five, Like, dude, trade
him to Jacksonville. Tom Coughlin still loves him, and he's done.
He's got a year, maybe a year and a half left.
These were discussions that they were having and he just
make that up out of the blue. But Eli is

(28:45):
so powerful one because the two Super Bowls too, because
of his name and the longevity and the fact that
he's never never been a hint of trouble at all
in all the times that he's been there, that they
couldn't get him out and you're stuck with him and
you still have no succession plan. Again, I'm not I'm

(29:06):
not putting all the blame for yesterday on him. The
defense isn't great, all right, It's better, but not great.
The offensive line you haven't worked together that much. And
they overpaid for Nate Solder because you had to overpay
to get him out of New England. And you're still
trying to fix the right side of the line. And
it's Saycon Barkley's first game. There are things that he's

(29:28):
gonna learn, he's gonna improve on. But there's a reason
that people there's multiple reasons people in the NFL said
you should be drafting Sam Donald. One was Giants don't
usually draft that high. But the second was, hey, Eli
mank storty seven years old. He's been bad more than
he has been good, and he's not going to similarly

(29:49):
get better and have a rebirth the next three or
four years. That's not who he is. Fox Sports Radio

fifty one yards two touchdowns. He also had ten carries

(30:13):
hundred five yards on the south side of Oklahoma City
to garden City, Kansas to Lexton, Kentucky. Right to your radio,
touch Terry touchdown joints us here on the Doug Gottlip
Show on Fox Sports Radio. What's life been like since
Saturday Night? Man? It was? It was crazy? Uh, Saturday
Night was it was a dream come true, just to

(30:35):
you know, playing that play in that stadium with that
hostile environment and just to be able to come out
with the with the wind and those a great, great
feeling and I'm excited we did that. Okay, So let's
let's let's let's start. Let's let's go. Let's like, let's
go back. You grew up in Oklahoma. I played football,
I played basketball. Excuse me in Oklahoma? Um? Yeah, so
I played Oklahoma State and like, look, south Side guys,

(30:59):
South Sky guys, escape Southside to go anywhere other maybe
than oh you um, but you had um you had
to go to garden City. Your first game in garden
City was it at home? Was on the road? Uh?
First game a garden Cy was at home? Actually? How
many how many people do you think we're there? Um
been on property album, I'd say, okay, So compare that

(31:21):
to the swamp, Like, how do you prepare for playing
a road game like that, man. UM. The only thing
that I could really um, you know, adjust two was
the crowd noise, because through the week we were we
had crowd noise at practice and stuff like that, and
they try to make it just like as a game. UM.
Just with the noise. UM. But other than that, I

(31:42):
just really didn't try to look up in the stands,
just trying to focus on the field and what I
had to do in that play. You know. One of
the things that's really hard is you get so far up,
you get so pumped. You know that that in the
first quarter one sometimes guys store the ball too hard
the gun and then to all of a sudden, kind
of your first time on the sideline, you have trouble
catching your breath. How did you manage those emotions? UM?

(32:04):
You know, I just think of a white piece of paper, UM,
and try to just go play by play and not
really just a you know, force anything where UM do
too much. Just do what I'm asked of, UM and
what I'm taught to do. UM. And I feel like,
you know, my coaches give me the best UM situations,
to give me the best place so I can go

(32:24):
out there and be successful. So um, I just really
tried to, you know, just focus on what I had
to do. Um, it's not not let my nerves get
the best of me. Kerry Wilson joining us in the
Doug Otlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Course started
out his career at Oregon, then went to Garden City
and then and then to to Kentucky, having not grown
up at Kentucky, Like, did you know anything about the

(32:46):
streak before you got ready to play the game? Like,
did you have any idea that it had been thirty
one years? I heard about it, um, you know, but
I really didn't, you know, think too much of it.
You know. I watched the game, uh Florida Kentucky last year, Um,
you know, and I thought we should have beate him
last year. But now I really didn't know anything about

(33:07):
the Street sou. I was just focused on, you know,
trying to get to win, just how we do about
every other team. We're just focusing on the team and
what we gotta do to be successful on the field.
So I really didn't didn't have that much uh knowledge
about this about the Street. Terry Wilson joining us on
the Doug Outlive Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Of
course there's the ties that binds Mark Stoops and Bob

(33:29):
Stoops and that knowing about you know, playing high school
football growing up into Oklahoma City. What was he like
before the game? Was it a rob ross speach? Was
he very business like? What? What was his what was
his mentality? Um? You know coach was you know just
how he is before any game? Really? Um, you know,
like I said, we weren't really worried about the streak
or anything. We weren't rall on around. We just uh

(33:51):
it started that in that week at practice that Monday, um,
and we were just amped up and just ready to
ready to do our job and play for our brothers.
Um no our assignments and our reminders and go through
our plays at night, just you know, really just spend
extra time on you know, our game playing and stuff
like that. So when it when it came game time,

(34:12):
you know, we didn't have to get a speech from coaching. Um,
you know have to you know, get get get amped
up from everybody else. Everybody else was just ready and
you know I feel like that that's why we came
out there and um, we're ready to play. Because everybody
knew their assignment. Yeah, I mean you had to had
the ninety one yard drive that gets you up seven nothing,
but then you're down ten seven at the half, Like

(34:33):
goes from being totally hyped up seven nothing too down
at the half. Did you say anything at the half
to anybody, because because you came out like you guys,
I came out like a house of fire in the
second half, both sides of the ball. What was said
at halftime? Um, half time, we came in the locker room,
we regrouped, We've seen what we had to fix, and
like I said, everybody was still you know, motivating each other. Um.

(34:56):
You know, we were just staying positive. We knew what
we were gonna do, and um, we prepared and we
worked really hard, you know, and just this starts in
the summer, you know when we sum my workhouse. You know,
we gotta push through the hard times and push through adversity.
But you know, down you know, ten and seven, that's
that's nothing us. Um. You know, we showed that we
could move the ball, and so that's where we relied

(35:17):
on and and we just got it done. Josh Allen
causes that fumble and Davante Robinson, you know, gets the
gets the touchdown and that that seals the game. What
is that feeling like to be because because I'll just
tell this, like I remember when I was I played
in Oaklhom State, there was I actually enjoyed winning on
the road more than winning at home because I loved

(35:39):
and I saw that afterwards you went over to your stands,
to your that your is that your family that was there? Yeah?
Who was there? It was my family was my mom,
my sister, and my girlfriend and uh, you know after
the game, I just went over there and it was
it was it was a crazy feeling. Like I still
can't even tell you what it felt like. It's this
it was a great feeling, you know, just to get

(36:01):
that win in that hospital. Like you said, it's the
crazy environment, uh, on the road and it's just but
then it's like it's like coming, this is wrong. It's
silent except for this like small group of people wearing
blue shirts that are going crazy and so it's the weirdest,
Like you go to like it sounds like five people
are cheering, right and that it sounds like literally yeah,

(36:21):
and it's crazy though. Um I actually watched the game
early to day and um on that that long throw
I through to Lynn. You know, you hear the crowd.
It sounds like it's it sounds like it's about now
five people screaming and it's just so loud, and then
the crowd just go silent. It's just crazy, man, It's
crazy how that momentums to shift it like that. Yeah,

(36:42):
that was the fifty four touchdown to lin Bowden Jr.
Obviously ended up being, you know, giving you guys an
eleven point lead that you would never give back. Terry
Wilson joining us in the Doug got Lip Show Terry Touchdown.
When did you first start calling yourself? When you first
called Terry touchdown? Uh? Well it started in high school.
Uh my students section started calling me that. It was
during the game. They started checking. They were saying Terry touchdown.

(37:04):
And then I heard it. I was on the sideline.
I heard it, and I was like, I like that. So,
you know, I changed it to my my Twitter hand
on my Instagram handle and stuff, and so I just
stuck with it and solid stuff. You land in Lexington.
I've seen videos where they're burning stuff. Did you see
them burning stuff when you got back? Yeah, it's crazy.
I've seen it as soon as we got out. I
think when I was on the bus, everybody's on Twitter

(37:27):
and they were showing me the video of somebody flipping
somebody's other cars. Listen, listen. In the south side of
Oklahoma City, if somebody's burning something in the cars being flipped,
you stay away. It's the exact opposite Lexington. Oh yeah,
that was an okwarmer city. You know, you stay far
away from that. You don't even say that any mind,
but yeah, it's it's different here. Man. These these people,

(37:50):
I hear these fans. You know, they're they're die hard,
you know, Kentucky fans, and you can definitely see that
in that video. Um, you know, I wish we could
have got back in time just you know, sell it
for with him and stuff, But you know that that's
how they are. So Terry Terry touchdown joining us. You
got Murray Murray State course in the state of Kentucky.
You don't want to lose to them. Then you got
Mississippi State. They're pretty good. They went in thump k State.

(38:12):
I guess my question is, look, you've been around Oregon,
you've been around the Oklahoma programs, you've been around the country.
You know how this thing. How good can this team
legitimately be? Uh talking about us? Right? Uh? You know,
I believe in this team. Um, and you know, like
I said, it's it starts to practice and that's what
that's what we're coached to. You know, see everything we

(38:34):
just worried about what we gotta do in practice and
it will correlate to the game. But these guys, we
have so many, so many veterans on this team and
so many great players on this team, and all we
have to do is just really you know, just stay
focused and not think too far down the road. Just
one game at a time. Um, just do what we
have to do. Um, just be accountable. If we're all accountable,

(38:56):
I feel like we can be really really really successful
in this league. Um. That's what a lot of people
don't see. But you know, like I said, just the
accountability on this team, and we're really mature and it's
not that hard to Yeah. No, listen, the guy like
a guy like Benny. He's been doing it for two
for this his third year straight. He at two straight
thousand yard seasons. Obviously, people get a chance to see
just how good Benny still is as a running back.

(39:18):
How good you are as as a talented quarterback and
the job that that coach has done touring around this program.
We really appreciate you join us. Look forward to catch
up with you later on the season. Yes, sir, thank
you for having me. Alright's that's h Terry touchdown Terry
Wilson Jr. That's pretty cool, right,
