(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. We'll get to our
apology to Kirk Cousins in a bit. But they really
should have been the Hollywood Rams. That would have been
the perfect way to really transition to l A. I
know there's history, Calvin, but what a show put on
last night by Jared Goff Sean McVeigh and that l

(00:43):
A Rams offense. That and I was enjoying the YG concert.
He was enjoying the YG For those who don't know,
he's uh, he's a pretty big rapper. He happens to
be from here, from the l A area and big
friends with big time friends with Robert Wood. So he
apparently you and I weren't at the game and us
you lied to me in somehow snuck game okay, and

(01:03):
he put on a concert, you know, so so you
got to see the Rams put on a show looking
like the greatest show on turf again. You got to
see a y G concert. Now we need you know
what we need to do, Ryan, We need to get
Aaron Andrews again. Find out what what was the atmosphere
like this? You go to the party that she party with.
It's funny because I heard the atmosphere. We were talking
prior to the show, um and they got feedback of

(01:26):
some people who went to the game last night because
the crowd shots were trying to sell l A like
this is l A's team. But there were a lot
of Vikings cheers that I heard when when the Vikings
would do something good. The atmosphere was super Bowl esque
I felt, or what I heard for the feeling of
the people who went to the game where there were

(01:47):
more Viking fans than maybe would normally be there. But
it was also maybe a maybe a bit of h
I don't want to say a laid back atmosphere isn't it?
But it's not like psyched up game. It was really
kind of an l A this is a show sort
of field last night, and they had the Vikings did
their part offensively to put on a show as well.
But I mean it's it's all about the Rams and

(02:09):
Jared Goff and and now he's being talked about is
an m VP candidate. Just what a show last night
by the Rams in l A. In the perfect spot.
This is this is what the NFL wanted. And I
don't know if the NFL cares about the seats as
long as the luxury boxes are sold in the new stadium,
but how it translated on TV. Huge win for the

(02:31):
National Football League last night in the Rams. You win
over the Vikings. So football doesn't matter in l A.
It's kind of the narrative, right everyone says, no, it
didn't really matter, and obviously you you can't really argue
it a fut that win. Hey, he wasn't here for
thirty years, so I definitely get that sentiment. But if
there was never gonna be a sparking point, a moment
of of a tipping point, Malcolm Glad, Well, you know

(02:51):
just where all of a sudden, this was the moment.
You're right, last night was definitely a big moment. And
I think the difference what you were you were kind
of illustrating was if you if you talk SEC footballer,
you love Ohio State, you know, and obviously me in Michigan. Uh,
get that that crazy wild atmosphere. Even Cleveland Browns fans
as bad as it's been for so long, that's a
raucous crowd. I think last night what you you mentioned

(03:13):
in the in the audience and the crowd was it
was more just really entertained. It was very l as
we are entertained. I'm not saying I ride or die
with the Rams's, and you know, I'm not saying I'm gonna,
you know, if they somehow lose, I'm gonna be crushed
for six weeks. But this was a very entertaining game,
and I think that's kind of what the crowd enjoyed. Uh,
And that's kind of l A. The only guy that

(03:35):
didn't enjoy it last night was Vikings head coach Mike Zimmer,
who saw his defense get shredded by one. Jared Golf
ever been, probably anywhere I've ever been, I've never been
this corporate, uh in pass coverage. So we're gonna have
to look at everything we're doing and get back to
doing things correctly. Thirty three, four hundred and sixty five

(03:57):
yards for Golf last night, five touchdowns and a perfect
passer rating. A one fifty eight point three for Jared
Goff last night and just shredding what defense Mike zimmer
Head on his team. Look at this pass right here.
We're watching the we have to have the game on,
and I think this is the one in the back
of the end zone. Look this is it. Look at
that right there that passed the Cooper Cup in the

(04:18):
back of the end zone where he literally had maybe
two other two inches on either side. It was like
he had to lay it right there perfectly. To me,
that pass is when I realized, Okay, Jared Goff is
really here. And it was also a coming out party
for him because people are gonna say, and they have said,
he's a system quarterback with all those weapons, who couldn't
have success or if I had Todd Gurley in my backfield,

(04:40):
I have Well, some of these passes were Aaron Rodgers.
As you know, I don't pick somebody Joe Montana. I
don't care. And I'm not saying his career trajectory is
on their level. What I am saying is he's a
real quarterback and as you mentioned then, he has a
m v P caliber season. It looks like he's gonna
have with with plays and passes in games like last night.

(05:00):
If we're crowning Patrick Mahomes as an m VP candidate
after his first three weeks of the season, what golf
did last night puts him into that conversation. But that
comes to to the point of that that I'm thinking
about last night. The touch the second touchdown that you
had to Cooper Cup was one of the few that
Anthony Barr wasn't getting burned on. And in Anthony Barr's defense,
there's no way that he should be guarding Cooper Cup

(05:23):
on any route. And you saw that last night, and
that's where that's where it comes to me of like, man,
this is this is so Sean McVeigh, and I know that,
Like I just wondered this watching the guys that Jared
Goff was throwing the football too. And it's not like
he was spreading it all over the lot. He was
spreading at the four guys Robert Woods, Cooper Cup, Brandon

(05:45):
Cooks and Todd Gurley. They got the lion's share of it.
Thought to myself, could you put case Keenan in that
spot and they would be the same. Could you put
Um Vikings backup quarterback Trevor Simeon in that spot and
and be the same. I'm not sure, but I just
I lend it to more of McVeigh. Like I I

(06:06):
don't know what it is. Maybe maybe I'm just not
giving enough credit to to Jared Goff. Maybe I'm still
thinking about how Jeff Fisher ruined him in his first
rookie season. But I just think of everything that that
is there, it's it's so McVeigh driven, and and that's
where I just keep coming back to. So I get
the m v P talk, but I just think it's
all about McVeigh. Now, Mr Rain on my parade here,

(06:29):
let's talk about this. So Joe Montana for some, for
many is would say he's the greatest quarterback. There's maybe
five guys that everybody kind of you know, some wonna
say him, SOMEONEEA say John Elway, someone say Brady so
on and so forth. Bill Wash had a lot to
do with Joe montana success, so much so that he
say what you think you're what, you're bigger than get
out of here. I got this guy Steve Young again,

(06:51):
good quarterback, great quarterback? Where do you place him? Is
it because of Bill Wash? His success? So I think
you you can have both. Is Tom Brady tom Brady
without Bill Belichick because Tom Brady when he goes down,
I saw Matt Castle go what eleven and five. I
saw Jacoby Brisett all of a sudden become a quarterback.
I saw Jimmy g get paid for what he was
able to do there, and then obviously the few games,

(07:12):
five games in San franc So I don't think it
has to be separate. I don't think it has to
be I think to your point, Sean McVeigh has created
the opportunities. Now it's up to you to place it
on the money. And that's the difference. Like that past
I just referred to the Cooper Cup back of the
end zone that's off someone's helmet. If that's Case Keenum,

(07:33):
Sure that's Cooper Cup catches it, but he had one
ft out of bounds because it wasn't right there. And
I think that's the difference. So you're right, Cooper Case
Keenum and another quarterback, Trevor Simmons has the best best
years of his career with Sean McVeigh. But that extra
level is where you get at the talents of a
Jared Gond. There's something to the matchups as well. And

(07:55):
and I've said it on the show a bunch, but
Tom Brady always finds the weakness in the defense and
that's where that's why James White ends up with fourteen
to fifteen receptions in the Super Bowl because you just
keep going, so Dion branch es, I'm winning a Super
Bowl MVP. You find the weakness in the defense and
you continue to to go to go at it, and
go at it and go at it. That's what they

(08:17):
did last night, and in the couple of big plays
with the you know, Todd Gurley touchdown when Anthony Barr
was guarding him. That is a credit to mcfagh, but
it also is a credit to Jared Goff to realize, Okay,
that's where the weakness is. We got the matchup we
wanted and then we ended up cashing in. And it's
just it's it's it's truly magnificent. I had, Calvin, you
don't know this, but I proclaimed earlier this year that

(08:37):
the the Tampa Bay Buccaneers had the best set of
pass catchers in the National Football League of receivers and
tight ends, not taking running backs, and included just because
of Mike Evans DeShawn Jacks and Adam Humphries, Chris God.
I just think that great pass catchers. And I'm still
gonna stick with that because they've been faring well. But man,
that that trio. It's not like golf was spreading it

(08:58):
around the ten guys last night. It's either Wood's, Cook's
her Copper Girly out of the backfield and it's just
making Hay over and over just a magnificent show in
the NFL. Just had to be drooling. You know, I'm
gonna get to that point. I do want to add
one more to your last point. I mean, you know
that's not fair. Dan. If someone says you're only good
because I'm sitting next to you, you know I could
be your Sean McBay. You know what I mean, and

(09:20):
you don't. You don't want that people saying, Hey, no,
Dan is amazing. Now I'm just talking um, you're absolutely
You're absolutely right me talking about Tampa Bay's receiving corps.
I think individually talented, I would go with Tampa Bay.
This's like man for man, like one guy versus nothing guy.
But when you're talking about systems, I you're right. I
mean McVey puts everyone in a position to win. And

(09:43):
that's what's amazing about it. I mean they did again.
We talked about this on the phone on our way in.
Johnny Hecker is so comfortable throwing a fifty yard bomb
because it's just, oh, this is the play and and
truth be told, it was a grab, but they said
it wouldn't be a pass inference because it was a
fake punt. Um. But the receiver goes for it, maybe
he catches that. So everyone has an opportunity to shine.

(10:04):
Everyone has an opportunity be great, and that's really all
you asked for as a player in a certain system.
I also thought that that move was there were a
couple of things to the fake punt. We we know
that the Rams and what they do on special teams
and uh with with Fossil is their special teams coach
totally blanking on the first name right now, but that

(10:26):
it was his dad, Yeah, but John Fossil, Yeah, there
it is. And the it was we're gonna run this
fake punt because maybe we think that the Vikings are
going to score. But even if they don't get like
I got the sense of the Rams, like even if
we don't get this, we're probably still gonna keep on scoring,
like you know, like I know, we're gonna give up

(10:47):
field position and we're gonna make Minnesota go, you know,
give them forty yards less. But I'm not really worried.
That was a that was more of a sign of
sometimes teams do fake punts because they need to spark
their team because they can't get anything going offensively. Last
night was the exact opposite. I thought that the Rams
did it because they were like, we'll just keep scoring anyway,

(11:07):
so it doesn't matter even if the Vikings have a
short field. It's like playing somebody you know you're better
than in Madden. You do stuff when you play Matt
You're just like whatever, I'll get it back, I'll scoring you.
You know you're week anyway, and you're right hey. By
the way that we're talking about receiving Corps Feeling and
Stefan Diggs, I mean, I know it's only two guys
on him, but I mean those two, man, they're a

(11:28):
low to deal with. Stefon Diggs has made some amazing
catches in his young career already, and then even last
night he had some great catches and Feeling. I mean,
he looks concussed, goes out. Next thing, you know, he
comes back and catches like a sixty yard touchdowns. So
they they've got a couple of really, really nice receivers
there as well. And and we discussed yesterday on in
our apologies to Kirk Cousins, not that we were ripping in,

(11:48):
but we said it was a really big game for
him last night, and unfortunately for him, his team didn't win.
But throwing for over four hundred yards three touchdowns not
turning it over did take a couple of sacks, specifically
on the line as drive that wasn't good. You had
the one on third down when they were down ten
and they ended up having to kick a field goal
in that situation. But thirty six of fifty with the

(12:10):
with the constant pressure ended up being sacked four times.
It seemed like he was under more direct than than
maybe the numbers indicated, and they put it they put
a stat up on TV last night where of the
pressure that he got early on in the game, and
I thought, wow, it seemed like every past that he
seemed to be somewhat under pressure. But a great job
by Kirk Cousins of the Vikings. But the fact of
the matter is there one, two and one right now

(12:32):
with a defense that has been shredded by Jared Goff.
Josh Allen didn't shred them, but they had enough success play. Yeah,
and you have Nick Foles in the or the NFC
title game throwing against Jimmy Garoppolo was picked off three
times in the game against the Niners. We saw what
Aaron Rodgers did on one leg. What the heck happened

(12:52):
to this Minnesota defense? Um As Mike Zimmer says, he
has no idea that tough times in Minnesota it is.
And maybe Ed Warner can h answer that as well
some other things. Yeah, the word from Warder coming up next,
He's Calvin Washington. I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. You can always
listen to the show on the I Heart Radio appen.
If you want to reach Calvin on Twitter, you can
do so by calling you answer K DUB Live K

(13:15):
d U B B l V. In fact, you know
what I should do, Dan, what's up? I should like
ask people? That's a should I get another name? Because
I'll get you later on the show. I'll explain why
I'm why I'm questioning that. All right, there, there's a
tease for you. You You can reach me at Dan Buyer
on Fox. What's wrong with the Vikings defense? And what's
really wrong with the Dallas Cowboys? We ask Edward or

(13:36):
next year on Fox Sports Radio. He's Calvin Washington. I'm
Dan Buyer. Glad to have you with us on this Friday.
One game in the books and week four Rams getting
a seven point victory over the Vikings last night. Both
Kirk Cousins and Jared Golf were amazing. Edward Er is
amazing covering the world of the NFL, of course, the
host of the Doomsday podcast. You can find Ed on

(13:57):
Twitter at Edward or r f A. Hey, ed, thanks
so much for coming on today. We appreciate it. I
wish I was half as good at my job as
Jared Goff and Kirk Cousins were at theirs last night.
My my goodness, um amazing. We were Calvin and I
were just talking about golf and and of course the
the it's a chicken or the egg thing is McVeigh.
The reason is golf the reason and obviously it's a

(14:18):
it's a little bit of both. But what stands out
to you when you see Jared Goff, that makes him
different than other quarterbacks in the National Football League. Well,
you know, first of all, obviously there was a lot
of scrutiny between Jared Goff and Carson wins both of
who went one and two in that draft. And I
think the truth of the matter is that Sean McVeigh

(14:39):
really preferred Carson Wentz and at one point his opinion
of golf was such that they thought that with their
scheme and their players that they could put around him,
they could still win with them. But ultimately his goal
was to go and get Kirk Cousins, who they played
against last night. But obviously Goff has clearly demonstrated a
great knowledge, a grasp of a city him. Uh, they've

(15:01):
surrounded him with great personnel, you know. I mean, you
gotta give gm less sneed and and Sean McVeigh credit.
They knew what they had, they knew what they wanted,
and they knew how to get it on both sides
of the ball. And they built a really, you know,
great team around a young quarterback who seemed like a
failure his first year. And now he's you know, a

(15:22):
candidate early season candidate for the m v P Award,
and he's at you know, a historic performance. He's a
first quarterback in NFL history to throw for three fifty
yards and have complete seventy of his passes in three
straight games. And obviously he's got a lot of talent
around him. But you know, Todd Gurley has been ridiculously
good as both a receiver and a runner, kind of

(15:44):
like Marshall Falwk was for the Colts and the Rams
teams that went to Super Bowl. So I think the
most impressive thing about him is how quickly he makes
decisions and how accurately he delivers the football, because that
was the big question about him after year one was
could he develop and be an accurate thrower? And and
we just we're talking about this earlier. Could you put

(16:05):
a case Keenum in a spot like that? And I
don't want to see a stop gap quarterback, but we'll
just use that term and have the same success that
Jared Goff is these first four weeks. No, I mean
I wouldn't. I wouldn't presume that just any quarterback could
go into this system and excel, especially not to the
extent that um that that Jared Goff has. I mean,
you got to give him credit for what he's done

(16:27):
and not assume it's all the system. It's it's some
of both. It's some of a general manager and a
coach getting together and building the right talent for their system.
Part of it is having the right system for the
players that you've acquired, and particularly goff and and then
it's you know, being creative and how you call the
plays and how you design your offense. And I think
Sean McVeigh would get high marks from everybody in that regardless.

(16:51):
Look at last night, I mean they put they created
three mismatch situations with Anthony Barr in coverage where they
exploited him for a touchdown three times in a row.
And their explosiveness is ridiculous. I think they had a
two play drive seventy five yard touchdown drive, a four
play drive seventy five yard touchdown drive, at a three
play drive for seventy five yards and touched down. Yeah,

(17:11):
And I'm glad you mentioned that because I need help
understanding what has happened to this Minnesota Vikings defense. I mean,
Josh Allen comes in looking like Michael Vick. He's hurtling players,
He's doing this thing. Last week, and then last night
we see, as you mentioned, this Rams offense go for
almost six hundred yards. The Vikings defense last year was
one of the best. We expected to be the same
thing this year, and it really hasn't been. Even going

(17:33):
back to the postseason last year. Well, the Rams averaged
over ten yards of play, the most by any team
in the game this season against as you're saying of
Vikings defense that was number one in the NFL and
and really number one in almost every regard. Uh. And
they've been destroyed the last couple of weeks. And I
know my Zimmer very well from you know, his days

(17:56):
in Dallas working for a variety of coaches as the
defensive coordinator. He's one of the best in the game. Uh.
And he's admitted that he's concerned that he's been concerned
all years that they haven't played well on defense in
any of the games. Uh. You know, obviously not having
Everson Griffin, which he he said today is not gonna
he's not gonna return this week or uh next week

(18:16):
and probably not for the foreseeable future. And he's arguably
their best rusher. Uh. You know, Terence Newman retired after
you know what he's forty years old playing corner. Other
than that, it doesn't seem like there's been I mean,
they chose to let Brian Robison go uh he he,
I don't believe is signed anywhere else, So there have
been some changes. Uh, And losing Griffin would certainly be

(18:36):
a big part of maybe what's happened in their inability to,
you know, get consistent pressure on the quarterback and play
well against the run inside. But the depth to which
they've fallen is remarkable. I mean, the Rams had three
receivers last night who had hunter yard games against them.
We would have never seen that last year. And they
play Aaron Rodgers twice a year. Edward and joining us

(18:57):
here on Fox Sports Radio the Doug Gotlip Show. He's
Colvin washing to I'm Dan Buyer in for Doug today.
Of course you mentioned the Cowboys earlier. More Cowboys are
talking Ezekiel Elliott saying yesterday that if they get a lead,
they should be fine. In ways these are comments and
that seemed to then reflect poorly maybe on the coaching
staff for other players. Cole Beasley is now spoken out

(19:18):
for the second time in like three weeks and saying
receivers are doing their jobs. Is there is it growing
frustration within the Cowboys building as we're hearing more and
more from players of saying, Hey, we're doing what we're doing,
but we're not getting results. What's the feel like in
at Cowboys headquarters? Well, the most ridiculous statement of the
few that you cited there was what Jerry Jones said

(19:41):
on his radio show this morning, which is that he
sees similarities between uh Goff and Dak Prescott, who were
taken in the same draft. Obviously, Prescott was a fourth
round pick and Goff Win's first overall, but also just philosophically,
he said, there's no reason we can't do some of
the things that Rams are doing. The Rams lead the
nf L in point, they haven't scored less than thirty

(20:02):
three points of the game all year, and the Cowboys
rank next to last uh in points scored. So that
seems the most preposterous observation that I've heard. Um, But
I think they've played so poorly in starting one and
two that pretty soon, if not already, the Cowboys are
gonna have to answer the question they must already be

(20:22):
asking themselves, and that is, is this dysfunctional offense the
result of being wrong about Dak Prescott or are they
wrong about everybody they put around him? I mean, what
chance does he really have with uh, you know, Jeff
Swam and Blake Jarwin as replacements for retired Jason Wittne
to tight end with Deonte Thompson and Alan Hearns and

(20:43):
the aforementioned Cole Beasley as his primary receivers. I asked
a team source, you know, how they view what's going
on there, and they said the quarterbacks talent around him
isn't nearly good enough for him to overcome his own shortcoming. So, uh,
they've got huge problems in Dallas. And and this all
comes with them, by the way, leading the NFL and rushing.

(21:06):
Ezekiel Elliott is leading the NFL and rushing after three weeks.
That's something they accomplished back in when he was a
rookie and Dac was the you know, rookie of the year.
And in that season they went thirteen and three and
almost beat Green Bay uh in a playoff game where
Dak really went head to head with Aaron Rodgers after

(21:27):
the Cowboys had spotted the Packers in eighteen point lead. UH,
and they obviously lost the game at the very end
on a field goal by Mason Crosby. But he that's
the level that Dac was playing at two years ago,
and he's regressed really significantly. For for whatever reason, he's
his completion percentage has gone from sixty eight percent to percent.

(21:48):
He was averaging eight yards of completion now it's six
yards of completion. Uh. And so there's a lot of
concern in the building about the quarterback situation. And Scott Linehan,
the play caller, said this week, you know, we're gonna
throw it round a little bit. Uh. You know in
this game against the h the Alliance, who ranked number
one in the NFL against the past um but are
bad against the run. So that's the good things for

(22:09):
the Cowboys. I think if they can have success in
the first two downs against Detroit running the football, uh,
then they don't have to face as many third downs
where Detroit is really good protecting protecting the passing game.
Quickly for me, Ed, can you help me understand does
Jason Garrett have something on Jerry Jones? I mean, I
need to know because if he has been exceptionally mediocre
for so long, and as you know, covering the league

(22:31):
for so long, you get one or two cracks out
and then you're out of here. And we've seen coaches
in their first year get fired. I mean, and and
for some reason he's there. You don't feel as though
he ever has control of the team. You don't feel
as though the team ever really buys in anything. What
is going on there? I need answers that. Well. Um,
you know, Jason Garrett is a guy who he's been
the head coach there in Dallas for eight years now.

(22:54):
He's only gotten them to the playoffs twice. Uh, and
that's with now two different quarterbacks, Tony Romo who was
a statistical marvel and Dak Prescott who was a different
style of quarterback. Um. They have never been beyond the
divisional round with Garrett as their head coach. And last
year Jerry made uh the oddest of all coaching decisions

(23:16):
in that he decided they needed to make changes on
the coaching staff, but he did it at a level
below the coordinators. In other words, he he retained the
head coach, Jason Garrett, and both the offensive and defensive
coordinators and thought, you know, making changes at the positional
level was gonna create UH having to have a desirable
effect on the offense and allowed the team to play better. Uh.

(23:36):
You know, I think it's really time in Dallas for
somebody new. I think it's pretty clear that Garrett's way
hasn't hasn't produced the desired results. And he's been really fortunate,
as you suggest, to get as long as he has.
This would not have happened, uh in many circumstances, and
it's primarily because, um, Jerry really believed that this was
gonna be his Tom Landry uh, and that he struggled

(23:58):
early and Jason. One thing he's benefited from his timing. Uh.
The one year his contract was up and he had
to win, they went twelve and four with Romo. And
then two years ago when it appeared he had to
win again or else and Romo got hurt and it
seemed like disaster. There on the precipice of disaster, they
went thirteen and three in Dax's rookie season. So Uh,

(24:18):
he's been very fortunate. In years where Jerry was making
a determination on whether he wanted to go forward with
Garrett or not, Garrett had his two best seasons. Well,
I was just gonna wrap up with that, is it? Loyalty?
Is it blind loyalty or ego? The problem for Jerry
Jones and y Jason Garrett ha stayed so long. Well, well,
it's it's you know, it's some of both. Um. I
don't think many people would have been loyal too. I mean,

(24:38):
I guess, you know, Cincinnati Mike Brown shown unusual loyalty
to Hugh Jackson because he's won one and thirty two
and one, and uh, you know, Marvin Lewis has not
done anything in the playoffs and and all the time
that he's been in Cincinnati, So some of its loyalty,
you know, I don't I don't think Jerry, Um. You know,
Jerry's not the easiest guy in the world to work for.

(25:00):
He's all in in terms of his financial commitment, but
obviously he's involved in a way that most owners aren't,
and that makes a lot of football people very uncomfortable. Uh.
And I think the football side of the operation deserves
some blame for the personnel that they put their quarterback
with right now. So, uh, it's not a job that
it's probably a job almost anybody would take except for

(25:20):
an accomplished coach. Um. And you know, he had Sean
Payton on his staff and failed to secure him as
the next coach when Carcels left because of the timing.
But there's a lot of different factors in play, and
I think maybe Jerry would have made a change last
year except for the fact that there wasn't really anybody
that was particularly appealing to him who was available to

(25:40):
be the next head coach. He's ed Warder. Catch him
on the Doomsday Podcast and find him on Twitter at
ed Warder r f A. We appreciate it and enjoy
the rest of the week four. Ed have a good one. Thanks, guys,
have a great weekend. He's Calvin Washington. I'm Dan Buyer.
This is the Doug gott Leap Show on Fox Sports Radio.
So do you really want to count out the New
England Patriots. We'll answer that question after Steve Seger fills

(26:02):
us in on awesome action in the NFL and at
Wrigley Today. Hello, Steve, you bet you. We're in the
final weekend of Major League Baseball. Chance of rain later
today at Wrigley Field, but they're already into the top
of the fifth of this Cubs game three nothing over
the rival Cardinals. In that fifth inning, thirteenth homer of
the year for Chris Bryant off Cards starter Adam Wainewright.
The Chicago Cubs could be a division chat by the

(26:25):
end of the weekend. Milwaukee, winners of four straight, are
playing at home tonight against Detroit Brewers, one game behind
the Cubs for first in the NL Central to start
this day. In the n L West, the Rockies have
won seven in a row. They're hosting Washington tonight. Rockies
now one full game ahead of the Dodgers in the
n L West, Dodgers at San Francisco in a late game.
It's the Dodgers and these Cardinals that are losing that

(26:47):
are fighting out for the last wild card spot at
the moment. Europe's golfers lead the US at the Ryder
Cup five to three after day one in France, the
Americans lost all four afternoon foursomes, including a lopsided five
and four lost by the team of Jordan's Beach, the
number four ranked Justin Thomas, and a five and four
lost by Phil Mickelson and number seven rank bryceon Deshambo.

(27:07):
Falcons running back DeVante Freeman will miss another game this
weekend against Cincinnati. Bengals running back Joe Mixon is still
out with a knee injury. Eagles running back Ja Agi
returns after a fracture in his back. Chargers wide receiver
Keenan Allen returned to practice today. He'd missed the last
two days with knee and tooth issues. And Seattle wide
receiver Doug Baldwin will play at Arizona Sunday. He'd missed

(27:29):
the last two games with an mcl injury. College football
on FS one tonight, nine pm Eastern time, u c
l A at Colorado. Back to you, Thank you very much, Steve.
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show. I'm Dan Buyer. That's
Calvin Washington sitting in for Doug. You can always catch
the show on the I Heart Radio app and find
us on Twitter. I met Dan Buyer on Fox and
you can get Calvin at k dub Live. Are you

(27:50):
worried about New England at all? Yes, for the first time,
the first time in years, in the first time maybe
pre Tom Brady. There could be some more and I
I gonna tell you why. It's not shocking to anyone.
If we turn around and they right the ship and
let's say they're eleven and five, you know they lose
you know they lose a few more games, but but

(28:12):
they write the ship that wouldn't be shocking. But the
thing that does concern me Dan is that for the
first time they're struggling, they don't look good. And we've
heard rumblings that there is some you know, some issues
in the ranks. So if it's Bill Belichick not getting
along with Tom Brady, if it's uh, if there's a

(28:32):
grunk isn't happy, and so on and so forth, I
feel as though it's easy to to put those things
aside or fight past them when you're winning, right, winning
here is all. But if they lose this game to
the Dolphins and then you know they lose, say they
win the next one, then they lose again, and all
of a sudden, losing is something that's happening pretty regularly,
which is rare for them. Then I think, all of

(28:53):
a sudden you find them where those little small cracks
in the armor, there's little chinks in the armor start
to become big things be because all a little little
small cracks in the dam, maybe everything starts to come out.
Because again that you can fight through things when you're winning,
You can fly through things when you're successful. When you're
going to the super Bowl last year, and so on
and so forth. But I think it becomes challenging when
when all of a sudden you're losing. I just look

(29:14):
at the a f C, and even if they lose
this weekend to the Dolphins, and the Patriots are almost
a touchdown favorite at home to Miami, who's three and oh,
even if they lose, Miami's four no, and the Patriots
are sitting at one in three. I just whether it
be week five, whether it be Week ten, whether it
be in a wild card game, there isn't a team

(29:35):
outside of Jacksonville and Kansas City in the a f
C that I would probably be hesitant to take over
the Patriots. I would take the Patriots over the other
thirteen teams in the a f C, so and and
And it's not just because I don't think that the
a f C is is strong, because I don't I

(29:55):
that that is one of the reasons. But it's also
because you are getting Julian Edelman back. Maybe Josh Gordon
does end up being an answer or a viable option
for Tom Brady, which takes some of the frustration off
of of what you got from Rob Gronkowski, the offense
opens up. The defense has has been an issue as
in an issue last year or the Super Bowl. There

(30:15):
there have been other problems. I just I know, like,
we want to, we want to end it, we want
to we want to bury it. It's almost like a
celebrity couple dating. We're just wondering when the breakup goes
down with the New England Patriots. So that's why it's
on the cover of US Weekly in the National Inquirer
every week. I just don't I just don't see it.
I if New England is playing whoever, what even if

(30:37):
it's a if it's a Tennessee team that they faced
in the in the playoffs last year, I think, Wow,
New England took care of the Titans with relative ease,
and and and here the Titans are a two and
one squad in the a f C South. I just
don't see anybody in the a f C outside of
maybe Kansas City, and even Kansas City's defense makes me
think New England would be able to score points on them.

(30:57):
That's why I'm just I'm not in panic mode at all,
just because of I think things are looking up for
New England and I think that the path that they
would have to navigate isn't as dangerous as maybe one
you'd have to navigate in the NFC. So I'm gonna
agree with that for sure. But there are some other
teams that have to let me, I'm looking at this,
I'm curious on what other teams because so they play
the Steelers, and that wouldn't that's I mean, that's Steelers.

(31:20):
Other Steelers. You got Ben Roethlisberger. Maybe at that point
you have le beyond Bell if he decides to come back,
so he can, you know, make sure that this year
counts for him. Um. And obviously Anthony Brown and so
on and so forth. Uh, they do have the Vikings
on their schedule, They do have the Packers on their schedule.
They do have the Chiefs of course, as you mentioned. Um,
So there are some teams on here, you know that
that can really give them to some trouble. Um. And again,

(31:43):
I'm not saying that all of a sudden they're gonna
be a horrible team, but I am worried that if
at some point they can't succeed without talent. They've been
able to do that for a long time, where they
don't have all the talent, but the system, the having
Tom Brady and having a winning culture has maybe be
able to cultivate them. Even if, again you're looking at
their roster and you're like, this isn't really a great roster.

(32:05):
And I've heard some of them, you know, some of
the former players talk about it, just this roster isn't great,
and maybe at some point that catches up to them work.
They're just not talented compared to other teams. Now again,
they have arguably some would say the best, some would
say the second best quarterback outside of Aaron Rodgers. Uh,
and that is going to cover up a lot. But

(32:26):
I just look at this team. Maybe is Gonkowski that
he slowed down a bit finally and and then and
then you just talked about the Chiefs, Dan, What about
the Patriots defense? I know, but if they were to
play head to head for as great as the chief
stred we saw what they did last year to open
up the season. The point being is you couldn't count
them out just because you knew you would think that

(32:49):
New England would be able to score against them. And
I know last week against Detroit leaves a bad taste
in the mouth of many Patriots fans and around the
league of saying while I was was that the night
Tom Brady ended up falling off a cliff, they had
the ball for like four minutes in the first half. Yeah,
I mean like it was. The time of possession was absurd.
So there, so there really wasn't enough. And and you

(33:11):
look back to a few years agoing to know a
lot of people point to the Trent Deal for burying
the Patriots in Kansas City in that game. I'm not
alluding into that. I just think that the landscape of
what's around they may not be good enough to be
whoever represents the NFC in the Super Bowl, but of
of of them just being done and done, I just
think is is way far from the equation. And when
it comes down to it, how can you bet against them?

(33:32):
And I think Vegas sees that this week, and I
think that's fair. I mean, they've earned that right, you know,
they've earned the right to get the benefit of the doubt.
They've earned the right to have be able to struggle
out the gain and then we all say it's the Patriots.
They'll find a way. That's why I said I wouldn't
be shocked, but I am a bit worried that at
some point, the talent, the age, and things have kicked in.
I'm not saying Tom Brady's gonna fall off a cliff,

(33:53):
He's gonna become terrible, He's gonna be this bet. No,
not come on, Tom Brady. But I'm just saying that
you look at the talent, you look at the roster
are in comparison to other teams, and especially on both
sides of the ball, offensively and defensively, I am a
bit worried that finally, this is maybe the year where,
you know, maybe they go ten and six where they
don't make the playoffs, or they go nine and seven,
you know, and it's like five Castle year where you

(34:15):
didn't make the playoffs. That's what I'm saying. I'm not
saying they're gonna be bad. I'm just saying I'm worried
that this isn't the year that they actually are able
to have a lot of success. But it's the Patriots,
and it's that a f C. It's it's honestly not
that good. You know, there's another team you slept on
they're better than their record. I think that's the Chargers.
I think the Chargers are better than their record. I
think you'd see a similar game up and down the field. Yeah,

(34:38):
here and there everywhere. He's Calvin Washington. I'm Damn Buyer.
This is the Doug gott Leap Show on Fox Sports Radio.

That's what the I Heart radio app does for you.
That's right. We got a lot of football to get to.
A quick update on baseball. Cubs now up for nothing
over the Cardinals of Adam Wayne right bottom of the fifth. Yeah,
only a Brewers fan might have that reaction. Starting to
day a game behind the Cubs in the said, rather

(36:44):
face If I'm a Brewers fan, I'd rather face St.
Louis in that wild card game that the Dodgers. Well,
the Dodgers could still tank against the rival Giants. There's
still a chance of that. Hey, figures crossed. Right, Hey,
let's what game are we playing today? Steve John psychic? Okay,
I'm gonna give the him and you give me your
little Well I I was gonna say, predictions has to

(37:06):
be stronger than that. We're calling you actual psychics on this,
so it will happen. Steve, I didn't like the term
little you know, you felt I felt as if you
were just kind of, you know, shading us. Yes, exactly,
your little prediction. Yeah, well we'll see item number one. Okay.
Buccaneers head coach Dirk Cutter said earlier this week He's

(37:27):
already told Ryan Fitzpatrick and Jamis Winston who will be
starting Sunday. So who will start for the Bucks this
week against the Bears. Well, if I'm gonna start here
and I'm gonna say that, it will be fits magic.
Do you believe in magic, it's got to be right. Yeah.
But I will say partly not just simply because of
success that he's had this season and the way the

(37:48):
offense has been moving, but slightly on a serious note,
I think just the climate of what's going on in
the country right now and awareness of of you know,
sexual harassment and certain things that have been going on.
Obviously we know the cases and uh havingaugh situation. Um,
I think that will play a role as well in
the decision interesting in the Buck's decision for this weekend,

(38:09):
that will play a role. Yes, I think there is
just a little bit of we're already hot, We're playing well,
Fitzpatrick's is finding guys, the offense is moving, and just
if we were to bring him back right off the bat,
and it was just that it was it too little?
Are we not caring? Are we're putting football behind before
some real issues? And NFL normally doesn't do that, but

(38:29):
I do think they have the ability to do that
because of Fitzpatrick. So guys who will start more games
for the Bucks, Winston or Fitzpatrick this year. Fitzpatrick's already
got four under his belt, So I mean, if he
starts this Sunday, as Kelvin says that he will, do
you agree? Yeah, I think that you've got to stick
with Fitzpatrick because if you make a change now, you

(38:49):
open yourself up to so much criticism and you you
are susceptible to losing both players like you kind of want.
If you're gonna make a change, just make just hope
that Ryan fitz Patrick plays poorly. And I know that's
not what they obviously want, but it makes the decision
a lot easier. I'm gonna say Fitzpatrick because I don't
think you're gonna see a string for them where he

(39:09):
plays poorly enough. Even if Jamis takes over later in
the year because of an injury, you already got four
in the books. Yeah, I'm going Fitzpatrick because Jamie isn't
going anywhere. If if we'll get you next year, you know,
we'll we'll ride this Fitzpatrick thing out and we'll go yeah,
I got a decision to make with him too, because
you franchise take him to you. I mean, Jamie's contract

(39:30):
is up, so they're gonna have to figure out something.
That's what makes this all even more intriguing is even
the long term status of Jamison, which is why what
you've mentioned, you need one guy to screw it up
royally or get hurt or something and kind of make
the decision for you. We do have four rookie quarterbacks
under center this Sunday, four first round draft picks, including

(39:50):
Baker Mayfield. Mayfield against the Raiders this weekend. Which will
have the best weekend? Will it be Baker Mayfield or
Sam Donald against of Jaguars? Josh Rosen is starting against
the Seahawks or will it be Josh Allen against the Packers?
Which of those four first rounders will have the better weekend?
As a Seahawks fan, I think it's Josh Rosen. I

(40:12):
hate to say it, but I just I think dump
boss to David Johnson is going to be the best medicine.
I'll be quick. Josh Allen going up against He's going
up against the Packers defense that isn't great. Clay Matthews
an't gonna want to sack him because he doesn't know
what to do anymore. Josh Allen, I think his running
ability is what's gonna help him to winless teams oh
and three Raiders Texans, which gets win one this week?

(40:36):
I would have said Baker Mayfield in the last question
of I thought the Browns were gonna win. I think
the Raiders win this week. So the Texans fall to
oh and four. Yeah, I agree. I agree the Raiders
they needed. If I paid a coast a hundred million dollars,
you're better get me a win. The Browns defense has
been has been pretty good and so so it's not
like Derek car On the Raiders are gonna be dominant.

(40:57):
I just like the situation they're in. Even in Baker
a fields first start on the road black hole, I
know he probably lives for stuff like that. I just
think he may have an issue. On Sunday, the Dallas
Cowboys have a big issue. Who's at fault? We'll tell
you next year. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports
talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows

(41:18):
at Fox sports radio dot com and within the I
Heart Radio apps. Search f s R to listen. Live
ah Yes, Week four upon us in the National Football League.
Also an intriguing weekend in college football, Stanford Notre Dame,
Ohio State, Penn State SEC Action, oh Miss goes to
the Bayou of Baton Rouge to face l s U.

(41:40):
Diving into that in a whole lot more. Now, the
game of the week of the NFL Kevin Calvin had
to beat last night against with the Rams taking on
the Minnesota Vikings. So you look at the schedule, You've
got Steelers Ravens, Nice, a f C North Division show
down on Sunday night, a f C West matchup on
Monday night, Chiefs Broncos. But there are some other games
littered about, Ians and Saints at the MetLife Stadium. I

(42:02):
was gonna say the Meadowlands, that's a game. But another
game of intrigue actually happens in Arlington, Texas because that's
where the Dallas Cowboys take on your former team. How
long has it been since you you said goodbody or
boo if you will be like we were two weeks
in a two weeks in here of and you know what,

(42:23):
I almost wore a Rams hat on you today the
initial out of it. I was gonna go with included
a RAMS hat, not Johnny's hat. Not John Romis is
well there four and now so John's gonna wear the hat.
Of course he is not that hat. I had a
It's actually if I made to my horn a little bit,
it's pretty cool. It's so it's all fatigue and then
it's the newer RAMS logo. But it's the fatigue hat

(42:44):
that sets it off. Nice I get. I get a
lot of compliments when I wear it. I have, but
I wanted to look professional since I knew you looked
as if you were on the PGA tour. So this
is a sad thing. I've got a lot of polos
and a lot of shorts and jeans in my wardrobe,
and so this is just this is how it ends
up playing you know, playing out and it's more more

(43:05):
about comfort. Plus, have got some family in town. Yes,
my my wife's cousins from Australia are in town, and
they have no idea how bad I played golf. Let's try.
We're gonna yeah, we're gonna take him to out back.
That's what we're gonna do. Like like, well, welcome, guess
where you're going tonight? Yes, how about some Alice Springs

(43:27):
chicken for that bloom onion. How about a taste of
home at the old out Back Steakhouse, which, by the way,
how bad is that is that co I let it
over there? Oh, he's the fun back to back to

(43:48):
the man. They're not having a lot of fun with
the Dallas Cowboy or not. Edward Or joined us earlier
to talk about the situation not only with Dak Prescott,
but specifically with one Jason. Right now, Jerry Jones, Cowboys owner,
hasn't if you look at the changes of head coaches
in the National Football League, Jerry Jones is extremely loyal

(44:10):
to guys. Took him forever to get rid of Wade Phillips,
gave Dave Campo a job. He sticks with the guys.
And and Edward Or joined us to talk about a
guy that he's stuck with as of late, Jason Garrett. Now,
Jason Garrett may not have been the head go to
of the Dallas Cowboys today if it wasn't for one
other reason. This was Edward Or earlier on the show
with us here on Fox Sports Radio. I think it's

(44:30):
really time in Dallas for somebody new. I think it's
pretty clear that Garrett's way hasn't hasn't produced the desired results.
And he's been really fortunate, as you suggest, to get
as long as he has. This would not have happened,
uh in many circumstances, and it's primarily because um Jerry
really believed that this was gonna be his Tom Landry
and that he struggled early. And Jason one thing he's

(44:52):
benefited from his timing. Uh. The one year his contract
was up and he had to win, they went twelve
and four with Romo. And then two years ago when
it appeared he had to win again or else and
Romo got hurt and it seemed like disaster. There on
the precipice of disaster, they went thirteen three in daks
rookie seasons. Timing is gonna be another issue for Dallas,
and I'll just I'll just say this is when you

(45:14):
look at what's happening with the Cowboys, you've got to
make a decision on what you want to do with
the future of Dak Prescott, who had told us his
regrets since his rookie season under Jason Garrett. And you've
got to make that decision not only with your quarterback,
but if that's your coaching staff that you want to
move forward with in the future. They're gonna be the
ones to have to either groom Dak or whoever is

(45:35):
going to be in in that spot. So now it
becomes decision time with the Dallas Cowboys. So a couple
of things to unpack here. And I said it when
we had ad On earlier. I mean, I don't know
what Jason Garrett has that he what does he bring
to the table when you watch that team, you don't
feel as if he's some offensive guru. For instance, I
give you an example. For the last ten years, maybe

(45:56):
ten years plus, we look at the New Orleans Saints
and we often times go and if they only had
the defense, maybe they'd be better. But at least you
knew between Drew Brees and what Sean Payton was gonna bring.
You knew what that team was. And one of the
things that we talked about in sports that and I
believe really does matter is an identity and what the Cowboys,
what's their identity? What is it? You know, what does
Sean Garrett bring? When I watched the team, It's gonna

(46:18):
be hard nosed defense, is gonna be the ability to score.
What is it obviously now is Zeke. It becomes a
bit of running. But I don't understand why he still
has his job. Now. On the other end of it
is who are they bringing in to compliment Dak. I
still believe in Dak. Is he gonna be Tom Brady
Aaron Rodgers? Maybe not? But is he gonna be Could
he be a top ten quarterback? I still believe so.
And I think the issue is what is around him?

(46:41):
Who at this young age, he shouldn't have to be
elevating everyone else. It should be these guys are helping
this young quarterback elevate and then eventually the roles will reverse.
You're talking playmakers in the past, catching game because all
I'm talking Scotland and drawing up some designs, uh offensively
and not making as Bryant looked like a prophet because

(47:01):
remember des told us on Twitter his might as well.
He needs to go ahead and start his own sports
channel or something or start his own website as tweets.
But Desney Channel about that, Yeah, there you go. How
about that for that the Desney Channel. I like that.

(47:24):
But on the Desney Channel he talked about they're predictable,
They're not innovative, it's bland, and what have we seen
for the first two weeks. It's simply that. So I
just I think he was speaking. But can you blame
and and this has been part of the problem is
let's let's read. Let's backtrack a little bit because this

(47:46):
is where I want to figure out where the blame goes.
We play this for you yesterday. This was Ezekiel Elliott,
the Cowboys running back earlier this week talking about the
Cowboys offense. I would love to see it more. But
I just think the nature of the games we played
in these first three games, we've been down, We've been
uh having to trying to come back. When when you
wrent out of time in the game, you can't just
be sitting there trying to pound it. You can't have

(48:07):
nine minute drives when you need to score in three possessions,
you know what I mean, So you gotta conserve that
clock and got trying to score as fast as you can. Dak,
I mean, Zeke is correct. They didn't say anything that
was out of school. But the point that he's making
is the only way we can win is if we
run the ball on our head in that and what
that does is that shows that there's limitations. You talked

(48:29):
about the limitations that maybe Dak Prescott has a throwing too. Well,
Cole Beasley has now come out and said, quote, we're
just getting open. That's all we can do. If you
watch the tape, that's all you've got to do, a
lot of people aren't watching the tape. They're just assuming
that's fine. But Cole Beasley is saying we're getting open.
So if you want to blame us, that's fine, but
you're not seeing what's really happening in what's really the problem.

(48:52):
So these these cowboys who are speaking out, and while
it doesn't sound like it's speaking out of school, when
they make these comments, they reflect poorly on so many
different facets to the organization. So who's to blame in
all of this? Jerry Jones, it starts with the top
on down and look at the way that that's unraveling.
If you will, you got he's talking about him, and
they're talking about him in Cole Beasley in essence is

(49:13):
throwing back under a bus. And I know he's not
trying to do it. He's not doing it. It's very indirect,
but he is. He's saying I'm open, I don't see
the ball coming my way. And that's saying des Bryant,
you're not reading reading your reads properly, or you're not
getting the ball out on time. And that's the shot
at Dak Prescott Um. So again, but what when you
talk about me talking about the offensive coordinator, talking about

(49:35):
the design, the plays, and we're talking about lack of personnel.
All of this really trickles back up to Jerry Jones.
All of this comes to him, the hype every single
year where this he's going on Jerry Jones and said, uh,
and we talked about this with Ed that basically their
offense can be as good as the Rams. And what
year is he what is he talking about? Is he
talking about Emmett Smith ain't walking through that door, Jerry Jones.

(49:57):
Troy Aikman is in the booth, He's not in the
pocket right now. So I don't agree with that. And
again I think he builds up this high. Now he
says their offense can be like the Rams. He keeps
doing all this when there's really no merit to it.
I mean, this team has been mediocre. They had a
good year a couple of season ago. Think thirteen and three.
Other than that, they've been yeah, and and and in
their receiving chorps Man and Dak unfortunately is performing like

(50:20):
man Ezekieli is the best thing they obviously have going well.
That that's like there there when Travis Frederick is healthy.
There are there are teams that would love the Minnesota
Vikings would love to have that offensive line at least
have Zack Martin and Tyrone Smith and Travis Frederick on that.
Lyle Collins as well. There are a lot of teams
that would like that. So you could take, if you will,

(50:42):
on a lot of places if you have that that
star Studdard aspect to your point about what this team
is doing, is it is it? Is it a culture thing?
Is it just Jerry Jones not having the guts to
fire Jason Garrett? Is it him not having the guts
to uh kind of player that they don't think is
worthy of of play? I mean they for for all

(51:03):
intensive purposes. You know, they only cut des Bryant when
they really had to, like like like there wasn't like
like we're choosing Dez over Deck And I never thought
it was that it was just that they're not on
the same page. Des is making this much money, it's
time to let him go so sore, But where does Jerry?
Where is his fault in all of this? Is it is?
It is? I think that's a fair that's a fair question, Dan.

(51:24):
I think it comes down to culture. For the winning
culture that they had was Jerry was Jim Jones. Jim
I'm sorry, Jim Johnson. It was Jimmy Johnson and what
he brought because we saw him doing it in college
very similarly he did it in the league. And of
course one of his players, Michael Evern play for him.
And so what does Jerry Jones do? I want to

(51:47):
show that I have more of hands on with this.
It's more of me being the reason why we're having success.
And then he's gone and they do win in the
next year again with Jim Johnson's uh kind of his
his blueprint, and then we haven't seen anything said it's
and I think it's again. I think it's just not
a true culture of winning, not a true culture. They
have no identity. We don't know what they are, and
year and year out, we don't know what the Dallas

(52:09):
Cowboys are, Yet we expect them to be something when
they've really not shown us that they can be. And
I just don't think it's a They have not been conducive,
the environment has not been conducive to winning. And I
think it just comes from top down. Maybe if he
stepped aside, Maybe there's guys who want to make different plays,
make different decisions, fire this guy, bringing this guy, but
they're scared to do it because he's so involved. They've

(52:31):
they've drafted well like that when and a lot of
that credit goes to Stephen Jones, his son. But when
you look at the other the other the pieces of
free agency or trades or player development, they're all lacking
in those in those areas, and and that spreads to
a lot of different different areas. And that's where these
comments made by Cole Beasley and Ezekia Elliott spread the

(52:53):
different areas as well, because while you're trying to say, hey,
we just need to get a lead, that also shows
that we're not good enough to win a game any
other way, or if we're getting open while other coaches
aren't good enough to figure out a scheme, or quarterbacks
not good enough to get us the football, and then
that all ends up going to the top with Jerry
Jones development too. I mean one of the things some

(53:14):
teams are really good at, especially teams that have a
lot of successes developing players where you kind of feel
year and year out there getting better. And we don't
really feel that about the Cowboys right now. So I
just think, to me, the Dallas Cowboys in the New
York Knicks are the most overhyped franchises in all of
American sports? Or what have they done to warrant all

(53:36):
of the rave and the acclaim that that comes with
them or the need to be on TV? And I
know New York's a big market. I know Dallas is
a big market in their America's team, but they're not
They're not that good, not as much in the NBA. No,
But when Dallas is good in the NFL, it's a
different feel. I'll give you that. I'll give you that.
But and to there, I guess I'm saying, and two,
they're good. Why do we have to why do we
have to do that? Because because yeah, that's business man,

(54:01):
the grandfather of Kim Kardashian. He just find a way
to be in the news, talk about something, say something,
do something, break the internet. Jerry j finds ways to
break the Internet. He's Calvin Washington. I'm Dan Buyer. This

line like the Dallas Cowboys? Lask a former offensive line
in that question and more next on Fox Sports Radio.

Nine o'clock Eastern time Sunday mornings here on Fox Sports Radio.
Joining us now are good Fred Jeff Schwartz, former NFL
lineman part of the Action Network. Hellout, Jeff, gonna talk

(55:04):
to you again. Oh, I'm glad to be here getting
ready for football. I love like football fanal was every night.
I wish we could. I wish we're in mac action time.
We get from Tuesday and Wednesday action, but like we
get every night now. I love the weekend. The it's
that Tuesday. It's like it soothes the the Monday night
withdrawal because they used to be that that Tuesday Wednesday gap.

(55:26):
Like when I took our trash day is Tuesday morning,
so after the Monday night games that take out the
trash and it's always the somber walk to the curb
because I can have football for three days. So so
so I get what you feel. It's somber times in
Dallas because things just start right with the Dallas Cowboys.
As a former offensive lineman, how many teams in the

(55:47):
National Football League would kill for the Cowboys offensive line realistically? Well,
first of all, first of all, it doesn't help that
Jerry Jones comes out and says that they usually similarities
between his offense and the Rams offense. Like, at least
be honest with the way you feel about the Cowboys
offense there so their offensive line has some issues right now,
and they're missing Travis Frederick their center, and they're not

(56:09):
missing him as much physically they are, of course, but
mentally like they are just making so many mental mistakes.
They're not I D linebackers properly. They're allowing people to
run free all the time. They have these problems in
week wanting at the Panthers didn't have them so much
as the Giants to them again lasting against Seattle. Now
now the lines come into town, um and they're just

(56:30):
having communication issues. And you you put a rookie left
guard next to that center you put um Zakmar is
really good obviously at right guardle calls it left guard
tyland Smith and left tackle. Lots of talent. They're just
not playing that well this year because I may really
miss Travis Frederick and Um, they'll be back hopefully at
some point this year. I don't really know. But they
gotta figure something out and they gotta get more creative

(56:51):
on offense. They're very stale right now. We've seen obviously
with McVey last night, you know, with Deep Filippo, the
vikings O c the creativity and in in at the
offensive court, their spot has never been more and the
Cowboys gotta figure something out. I was gonna I was
gonna say, are they And maybe I should have phrased
that this was well because I understand they're missing Frederick.

(57:13):
I just think that there are other like you see
the Vikings last night, like they wouldn't kill for Zach
Martin and a and A Tyron Smith on their offensive
line and seeing what they had done. I mean, of
course lots of people would kill for that um And
you know I live in Charlotte. Interesting, before the season
started that of the Panis offensive line was really good
and they had they had three Pro Bowlers and and

(57:35):
All Pro guy, and everyone's all, you know, all our
offensive line sucks. I'm like, guy, do you realize how
good you have it? Like not everyone on the offensive
line with a Pro bowler on our multiple Pro Bowls?
I mean, you know, the Cowboys have three All pros
if Travis Frederick is healthy. So there's a lot of
town on the offensive lit. Hey, Jeff, I want to
ask you switch teams. Everybody's excited to see Baker Mayfield

(57:57):
and get his start. How do you go into this
if you're a veteran linement on that team? How do
you go about I don't know if it's the scheme
for Baker Mayfield, do you kind of dumb it down
a bit? How do you uh, you know, black for him? So,
how do you got to go into annoying? This is
a young guy who's has some success last week the
second half of that game. But how do you go

(58:17):
into annoying You're growing up against a team that's upset
they're not having this season or owing three in the Raiders?
How would you protect him? Um? Well, the Raiders can't
rush a high school offensive line right now, so I'm
not even sure the breath to worry about that very
much at the moment. I mean, they can't rush anybody.
There are three sacks last impressures. Um, you know, they
have this guy that was really good at rushing the
pass and they got rid of him. So it's really

(58:38):
weird how that work. Yeah, I think I heard of him, so,
so you know it's funny. I like the Browns plus
three here. I generally would say, don't take the rookie
on his first road game. Um, but I just don't.
The Raiders are that good. I've been kind of taking
the Raiders all season and what really worries me about
the Raiders is we've seen now three straight weeks their
team has faded in the fourth quarter. Well, they're the

(58:59):
oldest team in the NFL. No wonder why they're gonna
stay in the fourth quarter. Now you have a Browns
team who I think it might be the youngest team
in the NFL. I mean, if you look at their team,
there's not one guy who's a major contributors over twenty
six I think, right. I mean, I think the middle
linebackers like thirty five. But besides that, everyone else is young,
and they're young, they're fresh. They play fast and physical

(59:20):
and defense. And you're asking a Raiders team who's now
wilted three straight weeks in a row to somehow muster
up some sort of offense against the Browns uh in
the fourth quarter. I don't see it. So I like
the Browns in this spot. I think they win a
close game, a low scoring game. UM, and I think
Baker Mayfield probably has ups and downs, but I think
that defense is so good and Cleveland think about this

(59:43):
last coming to Browns. Uh. The Saints this year have
scored forty points in the first game and forty three
points in in their last game, and they scored eighteen
against Cleveland, so the Brown defense is really good. Jeff
Schwartz joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's Calvin Washington.
I'm Dan Buyer in for Doug gott Leeb on The
du gott Leaves Show, of course. Jeff a little long
time in the NFL, now a part of the Action Network.

(01:00:04):
The Buffalo Bills were the surprise last week. Can they
do it back to back weeks? As they had to
Green Bay to face Aaron Rodgers and the Packers. What
are the ten point dogs in this game? Not? Yeah?
I mean this is this is a game I price
day Away with from gambling. But the Packers Shore wouldn't
this game and then theyre by picking the survival pool
this week. Um, unless unless Aaron Rodgers gets hurt. I

(01:00:27):
don't see Josh Allen continuing the trendy had last week.
I mean, I look, Bills fans are so angry with
me on Twitter because all I did was list out
the throws that he had. It was, you know, to
swing passes, two bubble screens, uh, three faint routes and
three hitches. Yeah, he didn't do anything, and he did
for a hundred yards and we're acting like Josh Allen
is the next Joe Montana, Like let's calm down. And

(01:00:48):
he goes on the road to a Green Bay team
who's gonna be prepared. Now they've seen how he can
handle a certain you know, a certain game plan like that,
they'll be ready for him. Um, I'm not. I'm not
really were that that that the Packers are gonna win
this game. Speaking, we were talking about offenses and having
a you know, some big games. The Saints you mentioned
they're going up against the Giants, and the Giants finally

(01:01:10):
gotta win. They finally got the offense going. How can
they keep that offensive going? I mean they got weapons
on the outside, they got se Kwon Barkley. We expected
more so far from them, we haven't seen it. Can
they get it going against the Saints defense who was
not great? Um? Well, they're out Evan Ingram now at
tight end for this game. Um. And then they're out
on the defensive side. I know you asked the offensive question,

(01:01:31):
but on the defensive side, Um, they're out Eli Apple
and Olivia Vernon, which are two t contributors offensively for
the Giants. Um, you know their offensive line was the
best played in three games. John Gregor, the insert him
at center really good. Um. You know O'Dell is gonna
always be the guy that teams are gonna try double,
so I'm not surprised he hasn't gotten his yet. But

(01:01:52):
Barkley has played well enough. And look, if things are
great for Eli and good pocket, he's he's really unstoppable
all times, and that was the case in the first half.
It's just a matter of keeping him upright to start
the game. I think it's important with older quarterbacks who
don't move as well early in the game. You gotta
keep him clean. That builds their confidence, gets him into
the game. If if you come out of the first

(01:02:13):
driving Eli gets sacked or the second driving you like,
get sacked, it really kind of puts a dent in
his confidence. Um. And that's I think the key for
this key for this game is is, um, you know,
how how much pressure can the Saints get on Eli?
And then on the other side, you know breeze does
not play as well outside, but it's September. That shouldn't
be such a big issue. Should be nice weather on Sunday.
Eli's future goes with the weather. What do you see

(01:02:36):
in his future. How long does he have? Is there anything?
Is there anything off of his game? You said, Eli manager? Yes,
ye yes, Um, you know so I go back and forth.
I said in the offseason that I think Eli Manning
can still do it. We saw the first two weeks
to go very well. Last week he gave he was
given protection. So and then if everything's going well offensively,

(01:02:59):
you know, you acting him, you're moving the ball, he
can do it. Um. Will they regret not taking a
quarterback this year? You know? I probably? Um, I thought
the Giants would be better and they're not. Looking's early
in the year. Um, you still have plenty of time
to improve. But they have. They have a brutal schedule.
I mean after this week they played in Atlanta, Jacksonville. UM,

(01:03:21):
their first seven games. If they if they were two
and five out of those first seven, that would be
probably a positive. They have a tough, tough schedule. Jeff
Schwartz our guests, Jeff, let me ask you this. If
you were playing still and you were with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers, Uh, and you guys have had some success.
Obviously you lost the last game with your eyes would
come back in that game and get some offense going.
Would you want to go with the guy who's probably

(01:03:43):
more talented than Jamie Swinson and who has a chance
to maybe be your future or the guy who's kind
of hot right now? And Ryan fitz Magic a ka Fitzpatrick.
UM an interesting question. So if I was a player,
I'd want to ride the hot guy, of course, But
I think if you're in the front office, you gotta
look at this a couple of ways. It depends on

(01:04:03):
how think how secure your job is. UM. If you
think your job is secured, then you gotta play Winston
because he's the future of the franchise. Fitz is a
great story. Uh, and if he goes up to to
Chicago this week, he kind of lays an egg to
kind of makes it a little bit easier of a
decision for you. But he's the future in the franchise.
Fitzpatrick is not. So playing Fitzpatrick does nothing for next

(01:04:25):
season the year after that. It's just in this little
window right now where he plays well. And Tampa Bay
is not a super Bowl team, the probably not a
playoff teams, So you get if basically, in my opinion,
playing Fitzpatrick this year is a wasted season. He's not
gonna be this way all season. If you continue to
play him, you've wasted a year development for Jamis Winston
to make him better for next year. And so I

(01:04:45):
play him as soon as I can. It might not
be popular in the locker room, but sometimes those decisions
aren't as popular in the locker room. But there were
you know there, there's right for the team. Final one
for Jeff Schwartz joining us here on Fox Sports Radio
when we talked about the Bills Packers game, do you
realize that you had to throw some more shade at
Bill's fans on Twitter? Because because I just saw a
tweet pop up where Bills fans were attacking you again,

(01:05:07):
is they They've been attacking to me. I've been arguing
with them all weeks. So theysicely what happened was is
like Bill's fans, like said, I saw, you know, they're
like Josh Allen the greatest thing ever. He led the
team to victory, and I'm like, oh, let's like, let's
come down here. He had three short drives and you know,
an opponent territory to start, you know, his defense force
three turnovers and he had not don't know six yards.

(01:05:30):
One of those was busted play seven yard pass and
like the guy ran for fifty yards. Another one was
a wide was guy was wide open and almost like
like let's calm down. And they've been arguing with me
all week about how Josh sound is the greatest thing
ever and I'm wrong and I don't know what I'm
talking about. So I've had a fount with them allways. Yeah, Chris,
Chris Ivory did the heavy lifting. I think you're on
the on that past play the the seventy yard or

(01:05:52):
whatever it was. Jeff Schwartz, Yeah, it's crazy, man. Get
him on Twitter at Jeff Schwartz. Of course that's geo
f F you know for playing in the NFL, and
you know him from the Action Network and you'll hear
him an OutKick the coverage with Clay Travis Schwartz. We
appreciate it. Good to talk to you, Joy week four. Alright,
take care of you guys. He's Calvin Washington, I'm dan By.

(01:06:12):
I saw he's so talented. I mean, it wasn't just
the retweet where you just click a button. He just
he didn't just say hello to a fan. It was
a thorough tweet. While on the air. That's impressive. That's
probably I said, did you say Eli? Like, yes, we
were talking about Eli Manning. I fight this on Twitter.
I met Dan Buyer on Fox. You can get Calvin
at k DUB Live. Coming up next, Houston Rockets are

(01:06:35):
trying to follow the footsteps of an NFL team. Will
explain after Steve the Seger gives us the latest injury
wise in the NFL and that Dubs Cardinals game and
Brigley Hello, Steve Hello, A lot of football to get
to and the overnight rating is out from the Rams
Vikings broadcast up eight percent from last year Fox TV,
plus a little on NFL Network as well. The injury

(01:06:56):
updates Forty Niners running backs Matt Breed and Alfred Morris
or listed as questionable for Sunday in l A, while
Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen returned to practice today, missed
the last two days with knee and tooth issues. L
A Chargers hosting San Francisco Sunday. Falcons running back Devonte
Freeman will miss another game this weekend against Cincinnati. Injured
his knee in the Openers, said to be making progress

(01:07:18):
but out this weekend. Bengals running back Joe Mixon still
out with a knee injury. Eagles running back Ja Agi
returns this weekend after a fracture in his back, but
running back Darren Sprawls is still out at Tennessee with
a hamstring injury. Former Eagles safety West Hopkins has passed
away at the age of fifty seven. He played for
Philadelphia from three to ninety three and had thirty career

(01:07:38):
interceptions there. Europe's golfers lead the US at the Ryder
Cup five to three. After day one in France, the
Americans lost all four afternoon foursomes. Saturday matches began after
two a m. Eastern time, and I believe one of
you two will be up at about two am Eastern
time and maybe not sleeping at all overnight as we
get to Saturday play a guest. I ended up staying

(01:07:59):
up till one o'clock in the morning here on the
the West Coast, had a bathroom break in the middle
of the night, checked my phone, saw that the US
was up three one. Then woke up and at seven
o'clock they hadn't won another match, saw that they were
getting throttled, and and it and it didn't get any
better there it maybe speed than Thomas trying to get
a bit closer Bubba Watson and Web sums and did

(01:08:22):
not happen. Stase scenario. Yeah, that they lost all four
it's bad enough, but no afternoon match even reached the
seventeen hole. That was like, concede, concede, We're down too far.
It's the the The foursomes, not the four ball, is
when all players play their own ball. Foursomes is alternate shot,
and the US is historically awful enfoursoms. Now, how can

(01:08:44):
that be? We have great golfers, do we not? But
when you don't hit a fairway, that's a problem, especially
an alternate shot, don't. It's an issue and they and
they grow the rough like hey in the Ryder Cup
at Europe because they can set it up and then
know that the US aren't gonna hit it in the fairway.
So yeah, advantage Europe. Quick baseball update. The Cubs lead

(01:09:06):
is for two over the Cardinals bottom of the seventh
pitching change, as the Cards do have nobody out and
men at second and third, so Cards, despite being down
for nothing at one point, still have a chance to
tie this up. And uh, it's not over yet. Let's
just put it that way. Cards have made a pitching change,
but the Cardinals have actually shown something after Kyle Hendricks

(01:09:28):
was just mowing them down the first five. I mean,
they've shown their cards. They go if the season ended
tonight and we go through the weekend, but if it
ended tonight, the Cardinals would miss the playoffs entirely. They're
a game back at the Dodgers for the last wild
card spot. All right, thank you very much, Steve keeping

(01:09:49):
our eye on that and so much more. He's Calvin Washington.
I'm Dan Buyer. Rams winners last night against the Minnesota Vikings.
I honestly did not see. And the Rams have went
through their first four games at home, and they had
the Raiders on the road to open up the season,
so it's it's not like it's been murderers Row. But
the point is is I didn't think that they would

(01:10:10):
make this adjustment as easily as they have with all
of their new pieces, and and and it makes me
wonder on the NFL is a different piece like in
the NBA, the Lakers team when they had Karl Malone,
Gary Payton with Shack and Kobe and they tried to
add that super team. Yeah, they made it to the
finals and we're just uh dominated pretty much by the Pistons.

(01:10:33):
I know they were banged up, but the point being
is it's very difficult to put NBA super teams together
and have them work out the way that a Golden
State has or or other teams. And now there's a
report that the Rockets have reached out to the Minnesota
Timberwolves about acquiring Jimmy Butler and and and my point
being this, Kelvin, I didn't think that the Ramps would

(01:10:56):
make it work, but I can see how it would
work in the NFL because you have guys playing different positions.
I just don't get it in the n b A.
I'm not a fan of it. I don't think that
the Marcus Cousins is gonna work out as great as
everybody thinks. He is a Golden State. I don't know
how Jimmy Butler added to that Houston Rockets team that
was one game and a healthy Chris Paul away from

(01:11:16):
making it to the NBA Finals. I know you're adding
that player. I just don't understand how you. I don't
Chemistry is a big part of it, I guess, is
what I'm saying, and I just don't think it it
translates in the NBA. So you're saying more of the
the immediacy of it versus the idea that loaded teams.
I just think you've got to find a guy who
doesn't mind just rebounds. So you need the Ben Wallace, Yeah,

(01:11:39):
you need you need the the Ronaldest turn meta where
I'm just gonna play some defense, you know, do my part.
Richard Hamilton's gonna get his. We're gonna use the Pistons
for an example. Chauncey Billips is gonna get his, Richid
Wallace is gonna do do his thing. But it's not
like every one of those guys is saying, I gotta
get my thirties. So here here's why I'll challenge that. Historically,

(01:11:59):
what we have seen in the NBA is just that
where the greatest score of all time Kareem adul Jabar
is with arguably one of the top five greatest players
of all time, with Manic Johnson with one of the
best fifty players, and James Worthy and if you look
at that Celtics teams that they were rivaling in the eighties,
I mean the teams were loaded Historically, the best teams
have always been loaded. I get and I would agree

(01:12:20):
if you're saying the immediacy like I just add a
Jimmy Butler and all of a sudden, I'm gonna be
better than Golden State. Uh, it's it's difficult to say
that's gonna happen, but hit relatively recent history has shown
and it has worked. When you look at the O
eight Celtics, Rondo, KG, Paul Pierson, those guys and Ray Allen,
they won that first year and then if if and

(01:12:40):
then the next year they go. Well, two years later
they go and they're a big shot from metal world
piece away from going winning again. And then Lebron and
the Heatles started. They get all the way to the finals.
They had this weird Lebron lost his mind against the Mavericks,
but I mean it, it worked and they went four
straight times. And now you look at Kevin Durant joining
the Warriors, they in two straight so far, so there

(01:13:02):
has been success with it. There's I just I look
at and I look at the Warriors. Draymond does all
the the other stuff, and I don't think that the
Warriors are all happy. And it was even said at
the end of the the last title of how Yeah,
things may not have been great behind the scenes. I'm
not sure how much Kevin Durant loves deferring to Steph
Curry at times. I I think that it bothers him.
With the Celtics, he had Rondo wasn't Rondo yet, and

(01:13:24):
he had Kevin Durant playing Kevin Garnett excuse me, playing
a different role in Paul Pierce was the elder statesman
of that team. But now if you're taking the Houston Rockets,
I think it's that times ten because it's James Harden's team,
and it's like, all right, you did make it work
with Chris Paul. You you prove that you can do
it with two guys who need to have the ball
in your hands, and you were a better team. But

(01:13:45):
now you've had to make other changes this offseason. Sure,
Clint Capella is back, but you've lost You've now got
Carmelo Anthony there, Trevor Ariza is gone. I just don't
I know. Jimmy Butler is a good player, and it's
not like we talked about Yester have like he's not superstar.
Jimmy Butler. I just they're gonna have chemistry issues anyway,
with with Garmelo Anthony there. Now you want to put

(01:14:08):
a guy like Jimmy Butler there, The Rams with the
Dominican Sue and keep to Leave and Marcus Peters. They
all play different positions so they're not crossing each other
and if each other. It works for the Rams. I
didn't think it would, but it works, and it works
because it's football, and at least has worked for the
short sample size. I just don't get. I don't know
why the Rockets would even want to get into the
Jimmy Butler sweepstakes, even if they had stuff to give them.

(01:14:30):
Minnesota Timber, I think it's an arms race in the NBA.
I think it's become an arms race and everybody wants
to blame Lebron in the heatles. I still don't get
why people don't blame the Celtics. And if you don't
want to necessarily to blame you at least have to
acknowledge that's kind of where it started, because they got
together and immediately they won, and it was like, whoa
you mean? You get a bunch of good guys together,
they can make it happen. And so I think then Lebron,

(01:14:51):
and Kevin Durant says, well, I did because of Lebron
and so on and so forth. So now I think
it has become an arms race. So I think I
get your sentiment, but I think the Rockets are saying, look,
we need more talent, because all of a sudden we
we we had our shot of beating the Warriors, and
if Chris Paul's hamstring didn't give out, maybe they do,
but we didn't. And then they add DeMarcus Cousins. Well,
who are we adding? So it becomes an arms race.

(01:15:13):
I would argue and agree with you more with Carmelo
than I would Jimmy Butler. I think Jimmy Butler is
a two times step up, like two steps up of
Trevor Reasa three and D play some good D can
still score. I think he's that same mold of but
a better Trevor reason. Whereas Carmelo, I really think what
is he gonna be? Okay, they say man uh issue

(01:15:33):
again and the band in the bend, you know, starting
or coming off the bench, that's that's another issue. I
just it doesn't make sense to me. I got a
good joke that Kawhi Leonard. I think I love you
talked about forming big threes. I'll never forget when Brandon Jennings,
because he was with the Bucks at the time they're
at TMZ, asked him, because he was he was back
home in southern California this, you know, what do you
think about the big threes? And and he said that

(01:15:54):
he would form a big three in the future with
Steph Curry and Tyreek Evans. Imagine how good that big
three would have been. Yeah, I'd rather get a big
mac watched that Big three. I actually think he was
outside of Roscoe's. I remember that what happens when you
get too much syrup, you know what I mean? Too

(01:16:15):
much serve at Roscoe's. By the way, Roscoe's has fallen off.
I respect to Roscoe's, but they've fallen off. By the way,
you can get Roscoe's chicken wings in the grocery store now, Yes,
And that just proved my point. He's Calvin Washington. I'm
Dan Buyer. This is the Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports.
As we are in for Doug. I don't know how
Roscoe's and Eggoes are gonna go, but I'll have to

(01:16:35):
give it a shot. The Dallas cowboys ready to move
on from Dak Prescott find out next. Be sure to
catch live edition. So the Doug got Leap Show week
days at noon Eastern three pm Pacific. He's Calvin Washington.
I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Dug Gottlieb Show, and
trust me, it's not the Dallas Cowboys pregame show. We
talked a lot of cowboys, and don't worry, We've got

(01:16:56):
more on the way. You can always listening to the
show on the I Heart Radio app. By the way,
you be talking cowboys on Sunday when you're on with
the from salam in five Eastern time. Oh what you're
gonna talk about The Lions know their opponent. You're not
gonna talk about them at all. They will not be
playing in my mind. Look, I will just somehow it's
not happening. I'll talk about another game. I We'll say this.
I do love the Lions uniforms that they've won the

(01:17:19):
last couple of years. Such a good sharp look with
that Honolululu Honolulu blue of Honolulu Blue. I am Lions
ESQ right now. And I love the Pontiac Silverdome because
it looked like half the lights were out wohldn't they
play because it was this dark tint. I've always said

(01:17:39):
that it's one of my favorite old stadiums that you
grow up watching games. But it always seemed like there
were a row of lights, like in this room. If
you turn off one of the rows of lights or
at your office, you would know that that's what it
would look like for the pony. Yeah, but when I
went to uh, the last time I was there at
least four a Lions game was Monday Night two thousand

(01:18:02):
one against the Rams, who would then go to the
super Bowl. I believe is that things like the year
they lost to the Patriots, um, but Lions on Monday
Night football. Yeah, I don't know what. I don't know
who made that scheduling mistake put them on back then.
That's why week one that Yeah, well, at least this
year you could. I mean, this year kind of makes sense.
Like the last couple of seasons they've made a postseason,

(01:18:23):
they've been they've been better, Like that's not far fetched.
I think even last year I'm not mistake and they
were nine and seven, So then being on Monday Night
and having some big primetime games this year, it's not
far fetched like back in the day post Barry. What
in the world. Yeah, I don't think that ABC even
had a lion's helmet in their graphics. Like, get someone
who can draw? Who can draw around here? Uhn't disrespect

(01:18:49):
never mind? Almost had my almost almost had emotions for
a second that you're disrespecting your slander towards the team.
But I forgot. I don't care anymore. Part of I'm
part of the Ramley. He's Kelvin Washing. Did I have
Dan Bye? We are in for Doug Gottlie today. Doug
normally at this time likes to take something from Fox
Sports Wonder, Fox Sports Radio that was interesting and play
it back to you. We like to call it. And
now Trent Dilford, former NFL quarterback who's been a guest

(01:19:16):
on this show as a guest on The Dan Patrick
Show earlier today talking about college quarterbacks and then about
the NFL. This is They're gonna be the most interesting draft.
You can start this conversation right now because you have
Herbert Lock, Stidham, Greer, McSorley. All these kids are big
time NFL quarterback counts, but there's no place for them
to go in this year's draft. So does Stidham stay

(01:19:38):
in school? Does Herbert stay in school? Because if it's
Lock and McSorley and Grier coming out, only as there
is the room for more than three oh Finley at
North Carolina State. I mean, there's a lot of guys
that are really, really talented, just may not be enough
seats for him to play in the NFL. And I'll
say this, if you're Dak Prescott and Dallas better start playing.

(01:20:00):
There's a lot of guys better start playing better because
there's guys coming up that can take their jobs in
a heartbeat, just like you're seeing in college football. That
was Trent Dilford talking about maybe the Cowboys are gonna
be one of those teams like we talked about Tampa
and in their situation, they've got a decision to make
with Jamis Winston and and you know, Ryan Fitzpatrick's not
the long term answer there. But interesting that the Cowboys

(01:20:22):
may be forced to make a decision, according to Trent Dilford,
just because of the value they could get in the draft.
There's there are some teams that that have quarterbacks that
maybe okay, but they may want to take a look.
I mean, even let's talk about a team that's has
some success the last couple of seasons, the Jags. I mean,
are you still is Blake Borrows the guy? I mean,
are you still take a look? And not that you

(01:20:42):
have to drive someone and they play immediately, but you know,
keep a little fighting under his butt by having somebody
good in behind him. Uh and you mentioned it, um,
Deshaun Watson. How do they feel with the Texans? I mean,
I think I think they're I think they'll ride him out.
But there are some guys that you need to pick
it up because there there are to be teams that
that will consider drafting some of these quarterbacks. But I

(01:21:03):
will will when he when he said that they may
want to go back in season, I mean with their
own pride, say I know I can go. It's very tough.
It's very tough to do because if you're ready and
you can go, you have to you have to bet
on the NFL wanting you. And I think that you
would still get that. I think you'd get value. I
think that if you're ready to go, then go, especially

(01:21:26):
because all it takes is one team. And I know,
like you can't say, like, well there's six teams. It
didn't it didn't matter. I mean, you know, Josh Rosen
was gonna go pro, Sam Donald was gonna go pro.
Both of them probably had hopes of being number one,
and neither did. So It's uh, yeah, you gotta go
when you can. Now dayne haskins into that conversation as well.
Today's shows brought to you by True Car. Car Shoppy
can be confusing with terms like dealer price, list, price,

(01:21:48):
and invoice. True Car shows you what other people paid
for the car you want, so you can recognize a
good price when you're ready to buy a new or
use Carve as a True Car to enjoy a more
confident car buying experience. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show
Fox Sports Radio. He's kelvin Washington, I'm Dan Buyer. Coming
up next, Baker makes his debut in Oakland. But will
it end up in a black hole? That's next. Fox

t G I F If you will, Thank Goodness, it's football?
How about that? Thank got US football. Yeah, how about that? Yeah, man,
you were on it today for somebody who didn't get

(01:22:30):
out of sleep. Ryder Cup. Don't worry. The American Ryder
Cup team probably not getting much sleep after what happened
later today. Hopefully they'll they'll back it up on on
Saturday and play a little bit better in the foursomes
than they did. But we are focused on football. It's
a big weekend in the NFL. We know they're all
big because there's only seventeen weeks plus the playoffs. But
the fact of the matter is this. We've got not one,

(01:22:53):
but two quarterbacks making their NFL first starts, if you
will first. I was gonna say debut is, but it's
not the case. Because Baker Mayfield took over for Tyrod
Taylor last Thursday in Week three and win over the Jets.
Josh Rosen came in late to try to rally the
Cardinals against the Bears. That didn't happen. But Rosen starts
against the Seahawks coming up this Sunday, while Baker Mayfield

(01:23:15):
and the Browns around the road in Oakland taking on
the Raiders. I know that Baker gets so many you know,
so much of the headlines because of who he is.
But the Cardinals are so bad that Josh Rosen just
just doing anything, as we we talked about it in
psychic of of him doing anything, I think is a
positive because of how bad the first three weeks have

(01:23:37):
gone for Arizona. So I like Rosen spot against Seattle
this week for pure debuts of actually being better than
what Baker does, just because things have just been such
a downer for the Cardinals so far. I mean, I
don't think, and maybe I'm wrong. I think it's been
one of the more understated things since from you know,
from the last week's games is the position he was

(01:24:00):
thrown in, Like, hey, go in with four minutes left,
you haven't played anything any down yet this season, and
go win the game. I mean, it was a ridiculous
situation to put him in, yet I was okay with it.
But how difficult it was he handled it all right.
I mean that he had to throw the interception, there
was nothing he had to throw the ball he was

(01:24:20):
he had to throw him forth. So it was kind
of one of those whatever in the last play. But
You're right, it is gonna be interesting. He's a different cat.
He's a different type of cat. Um. Baker Mayfield's a
guy that guys will rally around. He's the guy that
everybody wants to hang with. He's the guy that everyone's
you know, everyone's pal, everyone's friend. He's doing the dances
you see all over virally. Josh Rosen is different. He's

(01:24:42):
gonna speak his mind in a different way. He's gonna
rustle some feathers probably and even in his own locker room. Um,
because he's just a different type of cat. And I
am interested as to see, you know where he's gonna
come out in this league. But he is super talented.
He's uh, he's already made it known that he's not
We already knew this, but he made it known him
not nimble, and he put an emphasis on his brain.

(01:25:02):
And even the way he was saying that if you
if you read him talking about it's kind of one
of those he was taking shots at guys who are mobile. Um.
But I am interested to see what Josh Rosen, who
was supposed to be chosen but didn't win a lot
at U c l A. Um not to Steve Hartman,
you you'll have enough tomorrow to U c l A
will come up for some reason um, but he is.

(01:25:22):
They'll come up and they play tonight. So just the
last night, wait, I thought we were thought we're talking
about Alabama. But but Jash Rosen is interesting because he's
the prototypical night quarterback. You know that that every guy wanted.
He looks like a quarterback, Like say what you will
about Baker Mayfield and how great he's played. But when

(01:25:45):
you look at all the rookies, and I don't know,
Josh Allen's got a big frame, but Josh Rosen when
he drops back to pass and throws the football looks
like an NFL quarterback? And what what's amazing with what
happened a week ago? Imagine if he and Sam Donald
traded places, meaning that the Arizona Cardinals were actually the

(01:26:06):
New York Cardinals, in the New York Jets were the
Arizona Jets. The reason I bring it up is how
bad would the tenure of Steve wilkes By in Arizona
if you come out after that game and go oh
and three and say that a rookie quarterback who had
never taken a pro snap was your best option to

(01:26:26):
win a game when you were trailing late. If that
happened in New York. You aren't less, You're you're quicker
than Ben McAdoo is out with the Giants after his
two years. You like, if that happens in any other market,
that you admit that your rookie first round pick was
better in a late game situation than the veteran that
you had starting the game, there's a big problem, Like

(01:26:47):
I had a huge issue with I understand that Sam
Bradford's not mobile, but if you're saying that Josh Rosen
is the best option, then he shouldn't be taking his
first snap with four minutes left in the game. He
should be taking it four seconds into the first quarter
when he should have started that game. And so when
you talked about awful starts with Arizona, I just that's
why I say, like, there's nowhere to go but up,

(01:27:08):
because he's done. Like it's been so bad that the
coaching has been horrendous. While you wouldn't start Josh Rosen
against the I know that the Bears have a pass rush,
but if he's your best option to win the game
of four minutes left, then he probably was your best
option to win the game when it started. Yeah, he's
gonna see a lot with that that pass rushing, specifically
Khalil mac. I mean, and they're gonna be licking their
chops at a young guy, a rookie guy get his
first start. Um. But I do like the and he

(01:27:31):
mentioned it. I like the the the mental aspect, the
mental approach that Josh Rosen at least it seems he'll
have to the game. I think he knows his limitation,
so I think he knows okay that Kalil Mack and
guys coming after me. I need to get the ball
out early. I need to get the ball out quickly.
And I'm hoping that the offensive you know, the the
offensive coordinator as well as coming up with the scheme

(01:27:52):
to get him going. Um. But you're right when you say, look,
they have nowhere else to go but up. They might
be the worst team in all of football. They had
have a lot of talent on the offensive side of
boll Obviously they got um running back David Johnson. Um.
But Larry Fitzgerald is is you know, he's no longer himself,
still capable, He'll still make some plays. He'll probably become

(01:28:14):
so reliable for four rows and to just go to
the old veteran but I think you throw him in now.
I think you see what you get. And I think,
especially if the offensive line is any is anywhere is adequate,
you're not getting killed like David Carr used to get.
And I think you just go with it now, and
I think it's the right decision. Derek Carr has now
been a long long enough that I've forgotten David Carr.

(01:28:35):
So I know we see him all the time on
the NFL that work, but when you're usually saying you
know the wrong name, now, Derek Carr is natural for
so long and at least in Derek Carr's early years,
like David Carr was the natural go to, but now
Derek Carr, he's at least moved best his brother on that.
So Baker Mayfield starts against the Raiders. We just talked
about Josh Rosen getting to start against Seattle this week.

(01:28:55):
There are a lot of people who like Baker Mayfield,
including Jeff Schwartz, former NFL lineman who joined us earlier
on the show, talking about Baker's not only performance against
the Jets, but what he brings against Oakland coming up
in week four. I generally would say, don't take the
rookie on his first road game. But I don't the
Raiders are that good. I've been kind of staking the
Raiders all season, and what really worries me about the
Raiders is we've seen now three straight weeks their team

(01:29:18):
has faded in the fourth quarter. Well, they're the oldest
team in the NFL. No wonder why they're gonna stay
in the fourth quarter. Now, you have a Browns team
who I think it might be the youngest team in NFL.
I mean, if you look at their team, there's not
one guy who's a major contributors over twenty six. I
think they play fast and physical and defense. And you're
asking a Raiders team who's now wilted three straight weeks

(01:29:38):
in a row to somehow muster up some sort of
offense against the Browns. Uh in the fourth quarter. I
don't see it. That's Jeff Schwartz previewing this game, liking
Baker Mayfield going on the road to beat Oakland. Baker
maybe is just running wild. And I know that Jeff
talked about the Brown's defense and what they have, but
I'm sorry, it's it's a tall ask. And I know

(01:29:59):
that Josh Allen went in and one in Minnesota, a
week ago. But but still I don't. I don't think
all situations are are equal. And I think that now
Baker Mayfield, Yeah, with the reins, it's still a tough
ask to go across the country to play at Oakland
and to get a win in your first start. I
think it's I think it's difficult. I put a bag

(01:30:19):
of cheddar in south cream. Do you like the brons
in this? I do? Um not and and not handily,
But I just think there is I think he is
not gonna have uh, such a difficult time adapting. Yes,
there's gonna start all of a sudden, after a few games,
will get some more film on him, and teams will
start to be able to to uh to have a
game plan for him. We heard, um the Jets players

(01:30:40):
say that we didn't we weren't prepared for him, We
weren't ready for Baker. Maybe they did say that as
if he was you know, John Elway or something. But um,
I do like what he brings. I like and and
you know it's funny. I know it was just the
preseason and uh and and also know it was just
training camp, but I love what I've seen from him
from the jump, from hard knocks, you know, just watching

(01:31:00):
everything about him. He always had a great run during
training camp, he had a great place Sason. I mean,
he's just he's been good the entire way through so far.
And uh, in the one half that he's had an
opportunity in real live action, he was very good. So, um,
I like what he brings. I like they have a
three headed running attack. Hasn't really been able to get
off quite yet, but I I know they do have

(01:31:21):
that at their disposal. And he mentioned that defense and
they can get him the ball once or twice extra,
you know, a couple of extra possessions. He can maybe
do some good things. Yeah, they're not the same old Browns. Yeah,
they're They're definitely not. That. You've got one of the
premier pass rushers in Miles Garrett, which is which is
also unique because if you look at what Baker Mayfield's
role is, there are players who gravitate towards him and

(01:31:43):
teammates that gravitate towards him. Even though you've got Miles
Garrett on that team, even though you've got Jervis Landry
on that team, even though you've got you know, Jibral
Peppers who's been there a couple of years, Jamie Collins
bro I mean, they're they're veteran guys that have been
with that organization. Yet Baker is thought of as the
guys that they rally around. And Carlos Hyde comes in,

(01:32:04):
He's been in the NFL for a few years, had
some success with the Niners. You mentioned one of those
guys in the backfield. That's what makes Baker so unique
is because even with all of those personalities and those people,
while he may be arrogant, well he may come off
cocky at times, it's not It's not a bad arrogance,
you know what I mean, Like it's it may rub

(01:32:25):
an opponent the wrong way, but it's something that his
teammates feed off of, and that is something that not
everyone has. In very few people only have. I'm pausing
because I hate to say this. I feel like we
say this with once a year Withever the new guy is.
But isn't it Brett Farvesque? Will you just watch him?

(01:32:45):
And he loves to play the game, He's excited, he
has that that just that thingle bottom that his teammates
want to play with him. And yeah, he might rub
you the wrong way, but even even if he rubs
you the wrong way, you still go, I wouldn't mind
playing with him, yea, because I do. You played sports
growing up there some guys what's played. Look, we all
can't be Myles Garrett. Have you seen him without a shirt?
What the heck is that? First of all, why do

(01:33:07):
you have nine apps? Yes? Nine, it's not even even
he just has an extra ab sitting at top. That's
just ridiculous. But I go, I bring it back to
even when you played against another team and they had
that guy who's a little cocky, he's a little arrogant,
but some guys, even though they were that, there was
something about him that even you have respect, Like I
like him, and I think he's kind of that like,
I don't think guys are gonna not like him, Whereas

(01:33:29):
I think that could be the opposite for Josh Rosen
in the league. I think guys may not like him
the way he says things, the way he words things
like I told you, I think if you if you
read the way he was talking about him starting and
how he's I'm smart and I'm this, and it was
almost as if he's saying anybody who's a running quarterback
isn't and maybe I'm reading too far into it, but
the way he was saying and he just he words
things where I could see it being offensive the other team.

(01:33:50):
Baker is just kind of that guy that I can't
believe he beat us, and I just can't stand him
right now. But God, I love if he was on
my team. I guarantee you're gonna see so many opposing
players go to Baker may Field after each game to
give him the the high five, the handshake, the hug,
like he's completely There's other times where quarterbacks are just like,
oh whatever, you know. The quarterbacks meet and then they
move on. I think it's different with Baker Mayfield. By

(01:34:12):
the way, you mentioned me playing sports, so this should
be noted. This weekend my high school football class being
honored the twenty five year anniversary that I lettered in
football in my high school and Merrill, Wisconson's a special weekend.
It's homecoming. Unfortunately, I won't be there for the for
the ceremonies clapping for myself because it is the anniversary

(01:34:36):
of our oh and nine season. Yes, yes, oh and
nine I lettered. Who didn't win a game. The stats
five catches, five yards, and as a defensive back, not
one but two picks. More impressed with the picks you

(01:34:58):
could you could just they even bother with my side
of the field. Yeah, it was Bailey like, yes, because
they were just run over us. That's why, you know what,
since we're going there, I know we got a break.
Uh this coming we're talking high school football in the
national radio. This coming spring will be twenty years from

(01:35:19):
us winning a state championship. My basketball, we're pioneer, I know,
I don't. I can't compete with oh and nine, oh
and nine, oh and nine, and my mind you competitive?
And not one but two games, yes, the other ones
we lost by double digits. We lost one game by
like three and then another one by like nine. The

(01:35:41):
rest we were Yea, we were both. The team been
better in those twenty five years, that's what we want
to know. Or has it just been bad all years?
It was like a fifty game conference losing streak that
we were a part of. But after that things started
to look so during the break, I need answers. Yeah,
is this a rich, fancy school? Didn't have any players? Like,
what's going to an answer? All? Half of that's right?

(01:36:01):
We just didn't have any players? Is this just a
small and are the only like a hundred students in
the entire out of town at ten thousand. We just
weren't good. That's basically we just we we have he
we stunk. That's that's basically what it is. It's like
Bill O'Brien coached us. That's basically what it was. Stop it.

(01:36:22):
He was all right at Penn Stay. He's Kelvin Washington.

know you wrote a column this week about James Franklin

(01:37:27):
and what he has done at at Penn State. Why
doesn't James Franklin get the credit that maybe I don't
know another coach who had accomplished what he has done
at his school. Why doesn't he get the credit maybe
he deserves? Is a better way to to phrase that question. Oh,
it's a good question. I just think he's been a
little overshadowed with his own division um not only by

(01:37:51):
Urban Meyer, who's you know, won a national title Ohio
State and got into the playoffs twice, but by the
cult of personality of Jim Harbaugh, who was not accomplished
as much. If you if you want to compare resumes. Uh,
you know, year three at Penn State, James Franklin's winning
the Big Ten and winning and going to the Rose Bowl,

(01:38:12):
and year three at Michigan Jim Harbaugh's backing up and
people are starting to get impatient with him there. And
so you know, I think that he's just he maybe
you know, he's he's by helping shy. He's not above
self promotion to a degree either. But I just think
the company there within the division has somewhat kept him
a little bit on the back burner. I want to

(01:38:35):
actually go to Uh the Clemson situation helped me out here.
Pat Kelly Bryant has come out and he said that
he statement that you know he's gonna transfer and that
he felt he did everything he could do. Uh. He
was you know, he won games, he was he was quiet,
never had any issues, never any trouble. Uh. He feels
he was wrong. What say you? Is this a matter
of look next man and best man up? Or is

(01:38:55):
this was he wronged? Do you believe by Clemson and
Davila Swiney? No? No, I mean I think he had
dealt with very fairly by Climpse and he started eighteen games. Uh,
you know, I mean it's hard to say. I think
that a guy that starts a year and a half
didn't get a fair shake. Uh. And I know he
you know, he looks at the record and says, well,
wait a minute, why are we you know, why are
we making a change? We're undefeated this year. I was

(01:39:16):
the quarterback that got us the playoff last year. But
his problem is he came in between a great quarterback
in uh, Deshaun Watson, and another great quarterback, a future
great quarterback, and Trevor Lawrence. And the time is now
for Trevor Lawrence. I think that in the back of
Dava Sweeney's mind is a memory of that playoff semifinal

(01:39:37):
game against Alabama when Kelly Bryant was totally overmatched and
they were had to throw the ball and he couldn't
get it done. And I think he looks and says, Okay,
that's who we want to compete with. Is Kelly Bryant
the guy that can do that? Or do we need
to make a change here? And that's why he did.
What was this just inevitable? And and and and that
they do it to allow Kelly Bryant to be able
to transfer and play next season with this this four rule,

(01:40:00):
I mean, because that's that's I guess the one thing
of like, if this was inevitable, why not maybe make
it four games ago? Right? I mean? Was or was
it the did they just feel that hey, as long
as Trevor Lawrence just got his feet wet whenever he
was ready, he was good. I just I'm curious and
why it took just four games if it seemed like
it was inevitable. Well, I think it was inevitable, but
you gotta make sure you gotta throw Trevor Lawrence out

(01:40:22):
there in front of live competition and see how he does,
and put him in a place like College Station Texas
against and M and see how it goes. You know,
I don't think you, based on playing you know, Presbyterian
or Furman, whoever they're playing in the first game, say okay,
you know we we we know all we need to
know here. But now I think they do know enough
that after you know, a a a big time out

(01:40:46):
of conference game, after a road a c C game, Okay,
Trevor Lawrence is our best quarterback. And the thing that
they did here that that makes it okay to me
is they're given Kelly Bryant the chance to transfer. You know,
they didn't do it next week where he played five games,
and he wouldn't have that next year. So I really
have no problem with the way Clemson handled it. It's
it hasn't turned out that well for them because now

(01:41:07):
they're obviously down on the experienced quarterback. But but I
think Clemson handled it. Fund Hey, where do you like?
How do you feel about Stanford after that crazy game
against Oregon? They're now ranks seven four and ol going
up against Order Dame. Uh, And in that game, A
lot of people also would say the last few years
Order Dame it's kind of been overrated. They keep finding
ways to be ranked high. But then they you almost
feel like it wasn't Uh, they weren't deserving. So those

(01:41:30):
two teams. How do you feel about Stanford after that
win against Oregon and then Order Dame maybe the idea
of being a bit overrated? Yeah, I mean, you know,
it's a very important game. I can tell you this.
Notre Dame may be overrated, but if they win, the
weight of the playoffs pretty clear, because I think they're
gonna be favored in every remaining game After that if
you look, you know, the a c C schedule, they
played five a CEC teams, but Virginia Tech looks very vulnerable.

(01:41:52):
Now Florida State looks bad and then at the end
of the season they've got USC. USC doesn't look great
if Notre Dame gets by this one and get ready
for the playoff talk with the Irish. As far as Stanford,
you know, that was a great escape, unbelievable escape. And
I guess every team when they have a special season,
they need probably one game where you could just flat
get lucky. And that might have been it. But I

(01:42:14):
still think there's some issues there with them. They just
are not running the ball like they usually do. Uh.
The quarterback play has been better. Receivers have been really good,
but they haven't gotten Bryce love On tracked and going
to South Bend. I'm not sure that they can pull
off to road victories in a row like they have
Pat forty. Yeah, who's sports jointing us talking college football?
How much better is the Notre Dame with Ian Book

(01:42:34):
at quarterback? I think they're better. He just runs Kelly's
system better, you know. He he doesn't have Wimbush's natural skills.
He doesn't have his arms strength, he doesn't have his
uh scrambling ability, I don't think, but he he runs
the offense extremely well. Uh, he's accurate. Uh he's not big,
but he's mobile. You know. I think that he he

(01:42:56):
really makes them go better. This will be obviously a
bigger test than Wake wakeforce defense is just flat terrible,
so bad they fire their defensive coordina to the next day.
But yeah, I think that he's probably the best option
at quarterback. Why does it seem? And I don't even
say why does it seem? I think we can go
back and see Deshan Kaiser, Malik zay are uh Ian book,

(01:43:16):
Brandon Wimbrush. Um, I'm Everic Golston. Why is there always
an issue at quarterback at Notre Dame under Brian Kelly?
What is there? Is there something there that we're just
not missing? But I mean, TiSER is great and then
regresses and and then you've got I mean, is there
a common I mean the common threat seems to be
Brian Kelly. Is there a reason why there's always somewhat

(01:43:39):
of a controversy? That's a good question, is you know,
because they have had guys that look like they're the
guy and then all of a sudden, you know they're
not the guy. And you know, Kelly, I think it's
pretty pretty demanding. I think he's pretty hard to play
for and maybe you know, if you start making mistakes,
you start losing confidence because he's gonna be on you,
and because he's not afraid to go to the bench either.

(01:44:00):
So you know, it may be one of those things
where he's good at having multiple quarterbacks that already, but
he may not be the best thing for having a
guy you know where you where you're gonna really build
confidence and put all your stock in one player that
that certainly hasn't worked out. It has been a trend
for sure. One of the guys that's been one of
the young players that's been a joy to watching. I

(01:44:20):
guess we're only gonna get it for this season. Is
Kyler Murray? How special he's been so far? And what
do you like when you see him? Yeah, he's outstanding,
I mean unbelievable. To step into Baker Mayfield shoes and
perform the way he has is really impressive. He is,
you know, very athletic. He can run the ball, but
he can really sling it as well, and he's got

(01:44:41):
great coming into the offense. Obviously, Lincoln Riley has tailored
things to fit him. And you know, quarterbacking for Lincoln
Riley is one of the best jobs in college football.
So I think he's gonna make a lot of quarterbacks
look good over the years to come. But Kyler Murray's legit,
and you know, it's just I think what matter with
the the Army game where they couldn't get Army off
the field enough to really go up and down and

(01:45:02):
score a ton of points the way they had been.
But that's not on Kyler Murray. His stats in that
game are awfully good and he's gonna be fun to
watch the rest of the season before yeah, we lose
him to Major League Baseball. Wrapping up with Pat Forty, A, Yeah,
who's Sports Yard Fox Sports Radio. He's Kelvin Washington, I'm
Dan buyerret let's end where we started, and speaking of
quarterbacks at men only be there one year. Dwayne Haskins
at Ohio State. What has impressed you with his play

(01:45:26):
in these first four games, three of which were without
his head coach, didn't seem to matter, but Dwayne Haskins
maybe a one and done. What do you like about
the O s U signal caller? Yeah, best pure thrower
Urban Myers probably ever had, or at least since Alex
Smith at Utah. Just throws a great ball, um, great release,
great arm strength, could touch reads defenses. You know, he's

(01:45:48):
he's he's excellent. Now he's been so talented as a
password that he has basically forced Meyer away from his
quarterback run game, which has always been part and parcel
of what he has done. You know, Tim Tebow, Braxton Miller, JT. Barrett. Uh,
he loves to have a quarterback run the ball ten, fifteen,
even twenty times a game. With JT. Haskins. I'm sorry
with with the Jah Haskins. They're Dwayne Haskins. They're they're

(01:46:10):
running it, you know, a couple of times a game,
and they just don't need that out of him right now. So, uh,
he's been very enjoyable to watch, and he is shooting
up the NFL draft boards. They're gonna keep us close
on him Saturday and Happy Valley, but he's, uh, he's
won to watch should they get it done on the
road and Happy Valley. I think so. I was at
Penn State in Illinois and that run defense for Penn

(01:46:32):
State is a problem. Uh you know, they they need
to toughen up up the middle. Now. They have had
a way of really raising their level when they play
the house state the last couple of years. They play
their best game against them and the white out hundred
nine thousand. It's gonna be crazy, Definitely the toughest atmosphere
Haskins has ever gone into as a starting quarterback. So
there will be a challenge there. I think it'll be close,
but I think Ohouse State wins. He's Pat forty Covery

(01:46:54):
college football for y'ah who Sports. Find him on Twitter
at Yahoo forty. Thanks Pat, enjoy the games this week,
you guys. Thank you. Ohio State. Also, UM has the
best overall wide receiving corps that they've had in a while,
maybe since their national championship year when they had Devin Smith,
Michael Thomas and Evan Spencer and guys. But these guys,

(01:47:14):
there's five guys that can catch the balls, so super
talented and it's crazy to think that that Haskins, I mean,
is he the best quarterback they've had? Quarterbacks going to
the league. Cardo Jones UM Well, uh Miller is a receiver.
But I mean, he was great when he was there,
and then obviously J T. Barrett and think that he's
better than all of them is and and given that
with an urban Myer team is gonna have great defense

(01:47:36):
and be able to score. I mean, it's ridiculous. Dwayne
Haskins is the worst runner of any card L Jones
Cardinal is a great runner, but yeah, he he doesn't
provide that. But he've got They've got other guys to
move to football. He's Calvin Washington. I'm Dan Buyer. This
is the Doug Gottlieb Show Picks for the week coming
up next, but first, Steve the Sager gives us the
latest from Wrigley. Hello Steve, Hello, And Ohio State does

(01:47:57):
have five guys that can catch the ball, which is
two more than the Falow Bills. Just very good. Alright,
Rain today, Rain today at Wrigley Field, where the Cubs
have secured victory over St. Louis now a final eight
to four. Kyle Hendrix the winning picture, eight innings, two
runs allowed. Adam Wainwright took the loss. So for the moment,

(01:48:19):
the Cubs lead the NL Central by a game and
a half over Milwaukee, which will be hosting Detroit tonight.
In the n L West, the Rockies have won seven
in a row host Washington this evening. Kyle Freeland a
sixteen game winner on the mound for Colorado Rockies, a
full game ahead of the Dodgers in the division. This
result was St. Louis losing his great news for the Dodgers,

(01:48:39):
though who could be in a Monday tiebreaker. Regular season
is due to end on Sunday. The Dodgers, with eighty
eight wins for the moment, are now leading St. Louis
by game and a half for the final wild card spot.
The Dodgers had the late game tonight ten fifteen Eastern
Jungeon reru on the mound against the Giants. Madison bum
Gardner back in the Yankee lineup tonight at Boston shortstop
Deed greg Rious and center fielder Aaron Hicks. The Yankees

(01:49:02):
magic number to host the wild card game is down
to one. The Oakland A's will be that wild card opponent.
Wednesday night. The A's are at the Angels in a
late game. Europe's golfers lead the US at the Ryder
Cup five to three. After Day one in France, the
Americans lost all four afternoon foursomes. Former Eagle safety West
Hopkins has passed away at the age of fifty seven.

(01:49:23):
Philadelphia says running back Jagi returns this weekend after a
fracture in his back. Running Back Darren Sprawls is still
out at Tennessee with a hamstring injury. Bengals running back
Joe Mixon still out with a knee injury. Running Back
of the Falcons DeVante Freeman will miss another game this
weekend against Cincinnati. Right do you? Thank you very much? Steve.
This is the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.

(01:49:43):
He's Calvin Washington. I'm Dan Buyer, and let's get you
set for the weekend. I won't win. We got him
five NFL five College. It's five for five, which Doug
gottli Let's go five, all right? Since Doug isn't here,
this is what we're gonna do. I'm gonna take the
college games, Calvin is gonna take the pro games. We're

(01:50:05):
gonna give you five picks for this weekend. The games
that I'll tell you what, Calvin, Let's let's make the
people some money. Let's do it at least some the
states that allow it. Yes, the only the states that
allow it, and uh, good luck if you're listening to me.
So I'm mad that I picked this one because it
really offends me at my core. Right now, if you've

(01:50:25):
been following the last couple of weeks, my feelings stores
of particular team, and this is the Lions. I'm taking
the Lions to upset the Cowboys. They're right, straight up.
The Cowboys are given three points, they're at home, and
but I think the Cowboys offense is just struggling. It's
not good. The Lions seem to be on and up
and up. I mean they were able to kind of

(01:50:46):
get some things going the last couple of games and
a half, even though they lost to the four Niners,
they were getting some things going. And then of course
they beat the Patriots. So unfortunately, I'm picking the Lions
to actually pull an up set there and win. All right,
So that's the first pick. We're gonna go through all
the Calvin NFL. Then we'll get to my college. The
first one. Not only the Lions plus three and a half,
but maybe even plus three. Maybe take him to win

(01:51:06):
out right? Did I do all right? Game number two?
What he got? I'm going with the believe it or not,
it's the Bills now the Packers nine and a half, uh,
and they're at home. But I feel as though the
Packers struggling defensively. The Packers Aaron Rodgers has banged up
a bit, and I still think there's maybe not enough
film on Josh Allen and maybe Josh Allen. Yes, I

(01:51:29):
think they'll lose, but maybe they only lose by seven.
Maybe they only lose by a touchdown. Maybe they only
lose by six points a couple of field goals, so
the Packers would win. But I am taking the points
in the bill. Lashawn McCoy expected back this week and
this last week with the rib injury, but should go
in a week four for buff like that? Not too bad.
Let's see what you got for number three. Alright, we're
keeping it moving. We're going with this when this one

(01:51:50):
was a struggle because it's the Saints at Giants, and
the Saints your favorite three and a half points um,
and I went with the over on this. They put
it out one and a half. Yeah, I can see that,
and but that's why I said I was nervous because
Vegas knows what they're doing and we expect both teams
that be able to score. They got a lot of
offense between the two teams, right, it makes sense, and

(01:52:12):
so that's why I was hesitating at first, but I figured,
you know what, the Giants need this game, and they're
gonna have to just air it out and uh and
even say Kwan Barkley and I'll put him in the
backfield go catch some balls too, and we know what
the Saints can do offensively. Michael Thomas is looking like
Jerry Moss, like a combination of Jerry Rice and Randy Moss.
So I'm taking the over there again, it was fifty
one and a half. I'm taking the over on that game.

(01:52:34):
I mean, I'm interested that you and Jerry Maws instead
are Randy Rice Randy Rice? Yeah, they're gonna have been
the other way, but Jerry Maws is better. I think
maybe his reverence to Jerry going for like he better. Yeah,
they think I was paying paying homage to alright, number four,
Are you homage or homage? I would say pay homage.

(01:52:55):
I'm a OZ guy, not a uh are you too
picking the home team or away? You know? Silent? It
was the Houston Texas so I loved it. Yeah, No,
I'm going this last one. I am going the Ravens.
They are going up against the Steelers, and the Steelers
favored by three um close game. We already know how

(01:53:16):
these two teams get down. It's always a battle. But
I kind of like what the Ravens are doing right now,
and I think it's just a lot of chaos with
the Steelers. So I'm gonna go ahead and take the Ravens,
uh to cover the spread. I've gone back and forth
on some of my college picks, and truly there are
some really good games. But I just want to tell

(01:53:36):
a quick story. Since we're talking about my high school years.
You mentioned it earlier. I have big Ohio State fan
followed him since I was seven years old. I try
not to pick games that the Buckeyes playing because I
feel like I'm a jinx and it all goes back
to when I started shooting my mouth off that Ohio
State was gonna go to Happy Valley and knockoff Carry

(01:53:57):
Collins and John Carter and that Penn State team they
lost sixty three to fourteen. I'm never gonna I'm never
going to do that again, so I am staying away
from that game. But I've got some other big game
winners for you in college football, including tonight Pack twelve
showdown in Boulder, Colorado facing u c l A. Steve

(01:54:17):
the Sager's U c l A. Bruins Buffalo is favored
by nine and a half. This is my Friday Night
Light special. Give me Colorado in this one. Yes to
cover the nine and a half and sending Chip Kelly
in those Bruins to oh and four. Steve Hartman heard
you continue. U c l A gonna lose tonight Tomorrow morning.
For us on the West coast and for most of

(01:54:38):
the country, you'll have West Virginia in Texas Tech. What
a big twelve showdown Texas Tech. If you go to
the stats with the Red Raiders, you are no longer
seeing Texas Tech in the bottom five of defense, and
that is a big change. They still have the great offense.
They are three and a half point dogs to West Virginia.
Give me the Red Raiders at home. I like West

(01:54:59):
Virginia as a team. I just think if you got
a home dog into the caliber of Texas Tech, take
Texas Tech. Speaking of dogs, I know it's Trevor Lawrences
first start for Clemson Syracuse is a twenty five and
a half point underdog. They're at least gonna score some
points against Clemson. I think take the Orange plus twenty
five and a half. How about Kansas State at home

(01:55:20):
against Texas home dog again, I don't believe in Texas
at all. TCU through the kitchen sink and Ohio State
they had nothing left against Texas. Last week they win
against USC was whatever, it's USC. Kansas State at home
plus eight, And finally I wanted to go. I see
C Calvin, I really did, and L s U takes
out Ole miss I love old mrs Weapons. They have

(01:55:43):
two of the best receivers in college football, A J.
Brown and DK Metcalf and you've got Jordan's town who
was their quarterback. But it's at Happy Valley there in
Death Valley. Excuse me. L s U is favored by
a point total that I don't like, So I'm shifting gears.
Give me Mississippi State minus seven over Florida and Starkville
on Saturday. There you go for college football? Was there?

(01:56:06):
It is five NFL five College five for five with
Doug Gottley and Dan buy Eric Calvin Washington. I like
you add that day I was with you, except for
I don't know that that Texas one. I think I
think they're onto something there, and I think Texas has
had in the right direction in the corner. Yeah, I
think got his office going. I think he's got everything.

(01:56:27):
He's starting to get it to where he wants it
to be. So I don't the Kansas State Texas one
is the only one I was a little I don't know,
I worry about that one. I just home dogs. You
gotta you know, you gotta ride him. I get that.
Even though I went crazy and took a couple of
road teams there, I lost my mind a little bit.
That's that's all right. That's maybe almost of all of

(01:56:50):
them were. I almost went brown. You didn't take an
over under. Yeah, you didn't take an overrun. Don't know
if I like the tone in what you said that,
like you have an issue with me taking an over under.
I don't like at sounds like we're in Vegas and
you were judging me. You say that like I was
on the slots, Dan, and you had a problemly being
on the slot. You couldn't have taken all road teams
or home teams because it was the overall I know,

(01:57:12):
but I'm just making sure. I don't like the tone
in which you said that. He's Calvin Washington. I'm Dan Buyer.
This is the Doug got Leap Show on Fox Sports Radio.

If you had to pick Booberry, Count Chocular Frankenberry, where

(01:57:53):
do you go? Give me the count Chocula. But but
Sammy Sosa is the complexion of the milk that's left
in the bowl. Let me ask you something, Danny, were
you at any point in your life my complexion? No? Okay,
I just wanted to make sure because I was just
curious because that Sammy Sosa was That's Sammy Sosa that
I differ there, we also differ. Um. I had a

(01:58:14):
box of Booberry a couple of years ago. It was
my go to serial then not so much now. But Booberry.
Did you have to order it on Amazon? Like? Where is? No,
It's still in the store. You can still get it. Yes,
it is. Yes, John Ramos knows. Yesterday, yesterday. Yes, where
are you guys shopping Target? Yes? I think I saw
mine at Target as well. There's the cole. Okay, we

(01:58:35):
found the common denominator. It is not at Ralph's, it
is not Advan's. It is not at anywhere else. And
you listening in the South, it's not at Piggy Wiggleis
or public okay. Uh. Speaking of being on target, Steve
to Saga, judge us press, stay on target, Hello, Steve,
Good afternoon again, gents. Let's lead with the NFL as

(01:58:57):
Antonio Brown was interviewed by the media at his locker
today and he kept saying watch the tape or something
like that about eight times in a one minute span,
talking about how things have gone for him. Teammate Juju
Smith Schuster is leading the Steelers and receptions and receiving
yards so far. Antonio Brown, the comments, I've ready done

(01:59:17):
everything for us. A statistical point obviously is out of
my control. You know, I can't throw it to myself.
But it was important we continue to win. Obviously, I'm
getting a lot of respect out there. Guys. Is doubling
wasn't new Antonio Brown Steelers? Okay, I love how Like
what's important is we win? Comes like twenty seconds into
that sound bite, right, it shouldn't be number one. Hey,

(01:59:39):
it's important that we're winning. Later, what's important championships and
the Hall of Fame. You know what Antonio A K
Nino Brown? Uh Juju Smith Schuster is. I will agree
he is having a much better career than you thought
because he thought at SC he was going to be
the man and it just didn't for some reason, really

(02:00:00):
pan out that last year for him. He's coming to
the league, including last year and this year and his
balled out. He's become a big play man maker. So um,
But but I don't like there's a lot of finger
point going on in Pittsburgh. Remember everybody calling out Levy
on Bill. If I had his money, I would do
this and I would. And now him saying, I'm not
I'm not the one. You know, I don't throw myself
at the ball, Like, what's going this in the Pittsburgh

(02:00:20):
team that we knew, I'm not the one there you
go little cars? That was, Yeah, it was that was
the cars tonight sounded like last you got at the
NFL today, Steve, it was only the Steelers who were

(02:00:40):
going at each other. Now it's us. Cameron Wake saying,
everybody knows the league's concerned about players safety. It just
depends on what player. If it's player safety, everybody should
be safe, not just certain players should be everyone. Now
I'm supposed to sack Fresh myself in order to protect
the quarterback. You don't care about my safety, he says.
My knees mean just as much to my family. My

(02:01:01):
ability to play and provide is Tannehills does. I can't
understand that his are more important than mine. Cameron, Wait,
don't you mean Cameron Woke? Yes, yes, you are on it.
You are on either way. If I sound like a
car and I wanted a new car, I just go
to truecr Car shopping can be confusing with terms like

(02:01:22):
dealer price, list, price, and invoys. True car shows you
what other people paid for the car you want, so
you can recognize a good price when you're ready to
buy a new or used car. Is a true car
to enjoy a more confident car buying experience, don't go
to Derek Carr. Listen, I'm done with both of you.
I'm I'm jumping out the car Chuck car, Remember Chucky car? Yeah,
the old outfield. You know what. I'll say this though,

(02:01:43):
with regards to Cameron wake in this uh this this story,
one of the best things he did say is he said,
I'll quote him, it's silly if a quarterback is running
the ball to have to have the rules change and
and quote and I agree that. Why is it that
once a quarterback passes the line of scre's like if
you shouldn't they just be a runner? I'll I'll tell

(02:02:03):
you why. I know why. But I don't like him.
Letbe say it. Okay, that's there we go. I don't
like him. I mean, they run okay, fine in the pocket.
Outside they have become runners. And how many times have
we seen them sneak sneaky? Saw it a lot this
past week where they oh, I'm running out of bounce,
and then they cut back in and they do these
little shifty things like I don't know if he's gonna
slide or go out of bounds. They should be able

(02:02:23):
to get their heads cracked. And jeez, sorry, Cameron, a
note to you. We've seen games without Pro Bowl defensive
ends and they're still entertaining. Games without quarterbacks are not entertaining.
Get out there and pressed. That's what I was gonna say.
We don't want to see Trevor Simeon, although I like
Trevor Simeon, but that's not why you're no, we don't

(02:02:46):
want to see Okay, I know that we don't want him,
but but if they run, I'm with everything you guys
are saying, except for they run, then you're on your own.
He did also say that they should have a separate
union for defensive players only that is an awful idea.
He hadn't had his He hadn't had his weedies yet.
All right, he was just talking. He was he was
he was hungry. You don't we make our unions stronger?

(02:03:08):
I don't know. Let's split it up into two parties.
