(00:22):
of the Doug Godli Show on Fox Sports Radio. What Up,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Coming to you from
the beautiful sunny city of Los Angeles, California. Man, do
we have a lot to get into. We'll get you
to some football talk. We're like a week away from

(00:44):
the NBA. By the way, to download the last week's
All Ball podcast with Iron Gooda Who's the head Coach Hawaii?
Or this Week's All Ball podcast, which will drop I
believe sometime tomorrow morning. Man, it's good stuff. All Ball
podcast part of the Herd Podcast Network. This is the
Doug Gotli Show here on Fox Sports Radio and um um. Look,

(01:05):
last night was not just a win for the Red Sox,
a win for baseball, but a a big fat l
for something that baseball and especially the Yankees want to
wrap themselves around. We'll get to that upcoming in the show.
We got a chance to see Craig Kimber, who I
guessed a butting free agent. Who um, we'll we'll say

(01:26):
he closed the door on on the Yankees. But man, man,
you know, Gary Sanchez hit one that that did hit
warning track power a little bit too high, too high,
and uh then an amazing play from third base ends
up ending the Yankees season. John Paul Morosi, Fox Sports

(01:47):
MLB Reporter, He's gonna join us twenty after the hour.
Daniel Hunter is gonna join us from the Minnesota Vikings.
Biggest win of the year for the Vikings, who off
to a bit of a curious start. I think that's
the way in which I had express it. A curious start,
just because you know everything's going fine. Beat the Niners
at home to start the season, you start to sustain

(02:08):
some injury, you lose the Buffalo Bills at home. Then
you're beating in in a titanic showdown in l A
against the Rams. The Rani beat the Eagles, who ended
your season last year. We'll we'll talk some Vikings football.
Great Costal will join us, so too, will Cliff April
with Cliff April's thoughts on all that is going on
inside and outside the Seattle Seahawks locker room. So, um, look,

(02:33):
there's I don't believe that everybody should always go for it, right,
Like I think we all watch poker and say, like, well,
you know, the more you go all in, you know,
the anytime you're close you go all in. Guys are
gonna think you have good cards if you don't show
your tell. But everyone knows in terms of poker, like

(02:57):
you gotta go all in when you have really really
really good cards, really good cards. And then every once
in a while, you know, if you're conservative, you're smart,
you're savvy. Every once in a while you're bluff. You
can't live on a bluff. You can't just keep throwing
money at a problem. Um, there have been teams that

(03:20):
you could be critical of making moves because like, what
are you doing? Like I I understood the Diamondbacks a
couple of years ago in baseball had best hitting team
in baseball? And then like, do I like over spending
on Zach Grinky? No, But considering you had no pitching,
spend as much money in your pitching as you possibly can.

(03:41):
Now it didn't work out for a year, and then
this year, of course didn't make the playoffs, but two
years ago they did. Last year they did so at
certain times in which you go all in and it
feels like the Yankees are pretty damn close, right, Like
there's some issues that they have and they finally figured
out how to get there. Yankees only seventh in salaries. Now.

(04:03):
Part of it is that Aaron Judge is living on
a rookie deal which he only made six grand and change.
That balanced out by the fact that Gihn Carlo Stanton
is making ridiculous sem of money that's only going to
spike up. But you look around baseball and it's really
hard to do what I'm going to tell you they
need to do, and that's they need to go l

(04:27):
a rams, whether it's taking bad contracts or just taking
chances short term deals, load up and throw as much
money at the problem as possible. Now we can, a
smart man would sit there and go, hey, dude, they
scored one run in Game three, and though they scored

(04:48):
three in Game four, it wasn't like they were smacking
the ball around against the Red Sox. Be fair, but
this does feel like a a Red Sox, even with
their pitching and their bullpen being faulty, they've gone all in.
It's the time for the Yankees. The problem with the Yankees,
by my estimation, you can point to one thing. Last

(05:12):
night was a lost for analytics. It just was I
love Aaron Boone. I think Aaron Boone, in his heart,
in his gut, knows that some of the moves and
some of the timing of the moves in baseball that
they make aren't the wisest of moves. But he has
committed himself. He has sacrificed his own knowledge for that

(05:36):
of of analytics. And you go back to Game three
and his decisions with with the pitching staff, and man, uh,
he's under some heat. Whereas you know, Joey Cora went
with Chris Sale and he went through a one to
three eight in a rare relief appearance. Heck, as much
as Kimberull struggled, you know, it was like, man, you

(05:57):
should have left Chris Sale out there. It felt like
the moves that Aaron Boone made didn't wreak of a
young manager. Aaron Boone didn't make mistakes and game make
a mistake in Game three or earlier in the in
the series because of youth. He made it because he's
handcuffed by the Yankees assumption that analytics are gonna tell

(06:22):
you're gonna give you all the answers, right, That's really
what it comes to. Kind of comes down to throwing
Sorvino out there too long and not and and waiting
too long when you know you have a problem when
things are going bad. And we could you could complain
about Angel Hernandez even last night with c C. Sabathia,

(06:44):
But c C. You you go up to the meat
of a lineup that goes righty, righty, righty, righty, rudy,
and he's getting Now he's eating no swings and misses,
but he's not locating at all. Like I honestly will
tell you that Aaron Boone, in his gut probably wanted
to go out there ten minutes sooner was Servino in
ten minutes sooner was CC. But he's handcuffed by the

(07:07):
fact that he got that job swearing he would he
would fall in line and he would bow to the
world of of analytics. And it doesn't matter what sport
it is. We saw this in basketball the Houston Rockets
missed what was it, twenty seven threes in a row
last year? Was that what it was in game seven?

(07:30):
And analytics would tell you about to make the next five.
That's not the way sports work. Another way sports work.
One of my favorite expressions, you know, Sports Center used
to it's hard to tell kids characters days. We all
used to watch Sports Center at the end of the night,
right we did it was That was one of the
things that was really cool about working at ESPN. When

(07:50):
you were on Sports Centers, you felt like whatever the
ratings were, every human being that mattered, that mattered was
watching because that was your that was your that was
the mecca. And Kenny Mayne used to have this line
when he's on sports are you still on? Sometimes now?
He said, sports don't happened inside of a They don't

(08:14):
happen in a vacuum. Right, Sports happened inside of a
television set, and sports sports don't happen on paper. They
happen inside of a television set. And that's that's really
the case with analytics from the Yankees last night to
the Rockets in the playoffs. Statistically, analytically, it should have

(08:34):
gone a different way. The Rockets should have made three
point shots, but they didn't. Why Because that's sports, that's momentum.
What what can't be explained by a computer by really
smart people that do the math, that tell you, look, dude,
if you do this, if you operate this process enough times,

(08:55):
you will have more points than the other team. You know,
time and again. It works out in computer, but it
can't really equate for pressure. It can't equate for the
feeling of when you missed tenorrow. Even though mentally you
should think, hey, statistically say speaking, I'm gonna make you
know five of the next ten, because that's what the

(09:17):
stats tell you. That's not the way that human mentality,
the human mind works. The same thing could be said
for the Red Sox, honestly, right, like Craig Kimberrell should
have had that. But when you can't acqua, there's there.
There's no stat that can account or equate for the
feeling of being on the bump at Yankee Stadium trying

(09:41):
to close out the Yankees. So look, I would like
if I'm a Yankee fan, and I'm not, but I'm
a realist and I look in you know, you got
Patrick Corbin, Dallas, Kaiko Clayton Kershaw, Charlie Morton, the possibility
of David Price, although I don't think he's opting out
of a deal that's gonna pay him a hundred twenties

(10:02):
seven million, Lance Lynn, Derek Holland, Clay buck Holz, Nathan Nvaldi,
Geo Gonzalez, even Fat, Matt Harvey, Garrett Richards, Brett Anderson,
bar tolocal Al forty six year old bar Tolo cologne,
you name it. Pictures are available. Adam out of Ano,

(10:24):
that's the he was really good into the playoffs this year.
Craig Kimberl's available, who just closed you out from starting
pitching to relief pitching. There are plenty of guys the
Yankees can throw money at, But the issue with the
Yankees is if you bow down to the altar of

(10:44):
analytics and you stop making decisions based upon feel. Hunt
It doesn't mean a hundred percent based upon feel, but
if there's a continuum, I would always side with feel
as opposed to analytics. The decisions that were made were
made based upon what a computer told them should happen,

(11:07):
and computers don't decide sports. People do. And if you
don't believe that, you didn't watch last night. You didn't
watch last night because again by the numbers, John Carlos
Stanton shouldn't swing and miss thirteen out of fourteen strikes
on the night. But he did be sure to catch

(11:30):
live editions of The Doug got Leap Show weekdays in
noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app. You know who knows more
about football than you and me and all of us combine,
Greg co South NFL Films. That's because he watches everything, charts, everything,
knows so much and he joins us weekly here in

(11:51):
the Doug gott Leap Show. Greg Let's let's let's start
with the Dallas Cowboys. A lot of people have been
critical of Jason Garrett's decision to not go for it
on fourth and one from Houston's forty three yard line.
Like I, I said, I would probably go for it.
On the other hand, here's the guy's former quarterback been
doing a long time. Saw his defensive line just getting

(12:11):
pummeled by the Houston Texans, and he knows that if
they don't get it, Texans are a first down or
two away from kicking up taking up the game. You've
seen the tape. What do you think about that Cowboys
offense and decision? Well, it's funny you mentioned that play
does because that's micro stuff, So maybe that gets you
another win. The macro is what is their offense going

(12:33):
to be going forward? Because getting another win is not
necessarily going to make them a great team. So you
I heard you're talking before I just joined you about
the fact that they don't have a lot of talent,
particularly at the wide receiver position. Fair statement. So what
do you do when you don't have talent at the
wide receiver position. You've got to help them with schemes,

(12:55):
with tactics, with concepts. So what the Cowboys end up
doing is the run a lot of what we call
individual isolation routes where they have their receivers spread out
and they're asking them to win one on one versus
man coverage. They don't have those kinds of receivers, so
now you have to help them. You have to do
things like stacks, like bunch concepts, levels high low concepts

(13:19):
against zone. You have to do these kinds of things
to help your receivers, and particularly a quarterback in Dak
Prescott who needs it to find he's not a turn
it loose, anticipatory passer he needs it to find. So
maybe it's from my background spending a lot of time
with Bill Walsh, but I'm a big believer in coaching,

(13:41):
and I think that you need to do these things
to help your pass game. Tender agree with you, Um,
is this a Lenehan problem? Is that Jason Garrett problem?
Is it? Is it a quarterback problem? That you have
a guy who who who is who? Is not really
comfortable in trying to out scheme people. Uh, you know,

(14:03):
from people I've talked to over the years, I think
they would tell you that that Scott Linehan's offense is
I don't want to use the word basic because that
makes it seem as if he he doesn't spend a
lot of time and work through things. He's been doing
this a long time. But coaches tend to coach what
they know. A very good friend of mine, who has
been coaching in the NFL for well over thirty years,

(14:23):
told me that years ago. I'm sure I'm sure you
would agree with that. And in any sport, coaches coach
what they know. And you know, this is what I
think coach Linahan has done for years and this is
the way he coaches offense. And again, I'm not gonna
sit here and say he's doing it wrong because he
certainly knows his players and it is with his team

(14:44):
more than I am. But I would just like to
see when I turn on the tape, I would like
to see more schematic, tactical concepts that can help both
his receivers and his quarterback. Great coach South NFL Films
joining us in the Doug Galtis Show on sports Radio.
We just talked to Daniel Hunter from the Minnesota Vikings.
They go in, they beat the Philadelphia Eagles. What do

(15:06):
you see on tape from the Eagles in that what's
missing in comparison to last year? Well, I think there
are another team where you have to look past the
micro and and say, oh, well, if a g I
he doesn't fumble inside the tight red zone, they could win. Sure,
that's true, But I think when you look at the
larger picture, the Eagles are having some some issues that
we didn't expect them to have. Last year, their offensive

(15:28):
line was clearly a strength of their team. This year,
their offensive line in past protection in particular, has been
an ongoing week to week issue and it's it's caused
problems in one on one past protection when you look
at Lane Johnson getting beat on on the sack fumble,
and then they've had a lot of issues versus stunts

(15:49):
and blitz schemes. So a strength a year ago this
year has been a bit of a problem. Um. I
think that their secondary, which last year was compensated for
UH a good part of the time by their pass rush.
I think their secondary has a time struggle this year.
And while their pass rush has not been poor by
any means, they just haven't gotten home with the consistency

(16:11):
that they did a year ago. So I think when
you look at the larger issues, those things need to
be fixed for them to start winning games. Um. The
Jacksonville Jaguars had us all convinced that they had fixed
Blake Burrows until he watched Blake Bortles play in Kansas City,
Which is the real Blake Bortles, the one we saw
for the first couple of years, and we saw Sunday

(16:33):
or the one who had been performing admirably the past
year and a half or so both, And I think
that's the problem for a coaching staff. Doug, what is
the worst thing for a coaching staff not knowing what
you're going to get from the quarterback position on a
weekly basis, because if you know what you're going to get,
even if it's not great, at least you can game

(16:54):
plan and scheme. If you don't know what you're going
to get, it's very difficult to do that. So he
showed that he's capable of both. You just don't know
which one you're going to get on a weekly basis,
and that makes it very, very difficult in terms of
putting together a game plan against specific defenses. Great because
South NFL films joining us in the Doug Otlip Show

(17:15):
here on Fox Sports Radio. Um I look at um,
I look at the Cleveland Browns, and they figured out
a way to win with the talent they have really
good on talented on defense, Denz Award for a rookie
has may He's tied for the lead with interceptions. I
think he's got eight deflections already. And then they're really

(17:36):
really good upfront, which allows their defensive backs to take
more chances. Offensively, they had the best turnover margin in
the league and they run the football better than anybody else.
Um So are we giving Baker Mayfield too much credit,
because the truth is they're winning by shortening the game,
not turning it over and turning it onto their defense.

(17:56):
I think that they have a quarterback though, who now
you can line up and play with and you feel
pretty good about it. I mean, Mayfield has played well.
I would say that when all said and done, he's
a quarterback that has really quick feet, quick guys, a
quick delivery. He sees the field with clarity. He's really
a good balance between being kind of twitchy but being
very composed. Uh. I think they actually have They don't

(18:19):
have a great receiving corps, but I think they've got
enough talent with the run game. And I think they're
old line has. You know, good quarterbacks make old lines better,
as do good running backs, by the way, So I
would expect them to continue to improve. I would expect
Mayfield to continue to improve, and I think they'll be
They'll be a tough out. I'm not suggesting they'll be

(18:40):
in the playoffs, but they'll be a tough out. I
think it's a great way of putting it. The Cincinnati
Bengals are four and one on the season. If I
was walking through the bows, there a stock and you're
my adviser, would you allow me to buy stock in
the Cincinnati Bengals. Well, let me just give you an
example from this past week. And I think this speaks
to something that's not talked about often. We now just

(19:00):
automatically say it's a passing league, it's a spread out league.
You just have to make great plays in the passing game,
and that has merit obviously. But I thought they did
something last week that really speaks to their team, their
belief and and something positive going forward. Joe Mixon in
the first half had ten rushes for nineteen yards. Now
they were losing. He ended up with I think twenty

(19:22):
three for so they stuck with the run game. How
many teams would do that when when they had ten
for nineteen with their lead back in the first half.
And I think that that's important because while we're not
suggesting the run game is the key to playing offensive
football in the league, the run game is part of
offense and you need to be able to run the

(19:42):
ball and not randomly. The run game is about consistency,
and it's about doing it over and over, not running
it every once in a while and hoping that someone
gains fifteen yards. So I know a lot of coaches
have the attitude Doug that hey, I'm not going to
spend a lot of time trying to gain five yards me.
That's the wrong approach. No, it's all body shots, right.

(20:03):
So the boxing analogy is it's it's body shots you
gotta or in basketball it's like you gotta make layups.
Everybody worries about threes. You gotta make layups in order
to get people to commit to driving, and then you
kick out for threes. The same in you can't run
our p o s. If people don't think you're gonna
actually run the football, they don't work nearly nearly. And
it's also a function of opening up your playbook. The
playbook is far more open on second and five than

(20:24):
it is on second and ten. Great Costal joining us
in the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. We
we have the Cancie Chaves taken on the New England Patriots.
That's a good one, you think, Yeah, it's it's pretty special. Um,
are the Patriots fixed now that they've gotten Edelman back
and they figured out how to use Josh Gordon, Well,

(20:44):
they're better, And I think what even makes them better?
It's funny you asked me that playing off Cincinnati, because
what do they have done in the last two weeks,
which you don't see that often with is that Michelle
with brushes two weeks ago in Michelle with eighteen rushes
at this past week now knowing Bill Belichick, he could
have six rushes this week. But that's not the point.
The point is they seem to be committed to a
run game, and Michelle is that kind of runner because

(21:07):
he's a roadmap, point of attack runner, so he gets
sustaining type runs. And I think there's no better quarterback
and football and Brady in completing six yard passes. So
if it's second and four, Brady is in a great position.
You know, it's funny, Uh Kwan Barkley just jumped into
my head when we talked about Michelle. Barkley last week

(21:29):
had two rushes for fifty yards. Great runs, a thirty
yard and a twenty yard or you know how many
yards the other his other thirteen rushes gained manus two.
You can't. It's very hard to play offense like that.
You know, you need your back if you're going to
give the ball to a backways, Yeah, those two yard

(21:50):
runs means something, Doug, You know that. Yeah, Greg Costal
joining us on the Doug Gatlin Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. What about the Kansas City Chiefs. Obviously, defensively
they've shown they can play the past couple of weeks,
but offensively it hasn't been as spectacular Pat Mahomes, what
have people started to figure out? Well, I don't know

(22:10):
if it's what they've figured out. I think two weeks
ago Denver did a really nice job in the first
half with some concepts where they matched a lot of
the shorter routes and they blurred the looks in the secondary,
and teams will start doing these things just to give
him Homes different looks. He's still a young quarterback who's
learning how to play. We know what the talent level is, um,
so he'll go through some ups and downs. He's not

(22:31):
going to throw five touchdowns every week. The Patriots will
do quite a bit of that. Uh, the Patriots will
play man. They do play man, and then you get
some matchups that ideally the Chiefs will look at those
matchups and feel good about but then you still have
to convert. But I think that they'll they'll do a
good job with match concepts and in what are initially

(22:52):
his own looks, because what you want to do is
you want to take away clarity from a homes. You
don't want him dropping back and feeling, hey, there's my throw,
or you want to beat him and make him think
there's my throw but it's not really there. So that's
what teams will start to do it. It's it's all
about blurring the looks for a quarter a young quarterback.
Great co who gives us clarity as we get blurred looks.

(23:14):
When we watched on our TV said great, great stuff.
Love having you on. Appreciate you being our guest on
Fox Sports Radio. Thanks to I appreciate it. That's great
co Sell from NFL Films. Be sure to catch live
editions so the Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon
Eastern three pm Pacific. Before we overreact to Jimmy Butler
and the third team beating the first team as has
been reported, Um, this does happen in basketball a lot. Okay,

(23:37):
So what happens oftentimes after a loss is a starter
or a bad game and your technical foul, you're moved
to the the second team. You change your jerseys and
when you say second team that's often not guys. That's
often guys nine through fifteen through the rest of the roster.

(23:58):
The third team, if you will. That's because the starters
also have kind of some subs. The rotation is the
first team. That depends on teams. My first year at
Notre Dame, the first team was blue and the second
team was like we had old gold was the other
side of our uniforms. And so I'll never forget that.
Uh we used to. I made up a song because

(24:21):
my freshman year we had like four freshmen we were
all on the Gold team almost the entire preseason. We
we set the tune to on the Road Again, only
was on the Gold again. Life I love is playing
defense with my friends. I can't wait to get on
the Gold again. Right, you're always on defense. But what
happens in regular season play, at least in college and

(24:41):
high school summers. They the coach in order to motivate
you and really to tick you off, put you and
to bank a point, put you on second team. He
turn your jersey over. And oftentimes those guys haven't been
playing right. They're not playing in games, they're not playing
that much in practice, just playing defense and they do
win scrimmages more than you think. But the idea that

(25:02):
you would if you're Jimmy Butler, the thought that he's
doing himself some good and it's a little bit different
in the NBA, but the thought that you're doing to
yourself some good bye by handling your business this way.
It might have been lighthearted trash talk. We don't know
how it gets relayed, but I don't feel like it

(25:24):
would get out like this unless it was less than
light How did less than lighthearted trash talk? I just
really do. But I just I don't think you are
going to send your your You're going to be sent
to a stable organization like Spurs don't want any of this.
I don't think the Lakers don't want to this, the

(25:46):
Clippers maybe maybe, I just I don't really get the philosophy.
You're going to be traded. It's going to happen. You
can be this please. You can even talk a little
bit of trash, but going Sherman and burning everything to

(26:07):
the ground. My look, you're gonna get your wish. You're
gonna be traded, and it's gonna hurt your value for
wherever you go. But now you're Minnesota and you're thinking
f him and we're just getting rid of him. Send
him to Sacramento. I don't care. I'm gonna do him
zero favors. Why would you do Jimmy Butler a favor

(26:29):
if this is the way you're gonna behave So I
just I don't. I don't think it's a smart philosophy. Well,
this is why guys when they have when when you say, well,
maybe we'll try and work it out now, No, Fox
Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in the nation.
Catch all of our shows at Fox Sports Radio dot

(26:51):
com and within the I Heart Radio app search f
s R to listen live every day. This time, we'd
like to play for you a portion of a show
that was previously on Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports TV.
We color now, what does the Fox say? Um? Earlier today,
we heard this on Fox Sports Television. No one's ever

(27:16):
lost their job over a holdout. Now you've got your
Hall of Fame quarterback. He didn't want a couple of
to both. He's saying that my playing time might because
not Mike Tomlin, not the general manager. Like if all
these guys said something, it would really make sense. But
it's my quarterback, and he's saying he getting ready cut
my time, Like who gave him the authority? I'm gonna

(27:40):
go to the principal's office and advocate for the other guy,
because there's because the play the game ain't gonna be
sixty five minutes, so you can, Ben can try to
spend it as no, no, no no, I'm just promoting James Conner.
There's only so many places we run, There's only so
many touches for a running back, and so he is saying,
I Am going to advocate for someone other than you. Look,

(28:00):
I don't think Ben Roethlisberger is kind of a different
sort of cat, right, He's not one of these guys
that's that's beloved at times, even in his own locker room.
That was Chris Carter and Nick Wright talking about Ben
Roethlisberger advocating for James Conner over Levy on bell Um. So, like, look,
Ben is Ben is one of these guys that says

(28:23):
kind of weird stuff. And I think he's a little
bit late to the party. But being late to the party,
at least he was invited to the party. And by that,
I mean he's reacting to the offensive line. He's reacting
to the stability of Connor. And I think he's also
telling us what the general sense is. You know, Ben

(28:43):
almost feels like a guy who waits to find out
who everybody else is voting for, and then he in
fact vote, said that's who I voted for, Like he
didn't want to vote for somebody just because that's what
he believes in. He wants to vote for somebody because
as he wants to vote for the guy who or
a woman who won, right, That's I feel like that's

(29:04):
his mentality. But he's also telling you, are telling us
as the public, what's going to happen. I've just I've
never seen any of this. I've been doing this for
sixteen years now and this and I've watched and studied
football and basketball, and I've never seen a team when
you have a contract dispute between player and team. Players

(29:26):
are always always, always behind the scenes, sometimes a little
bit different, but in from the cameras and microphones, they're
always at least neutral, most of the time supportive of players.
And that hasn't been the case here. And I think
this has kind of been going. Oh all my offensive

(29:47):
linemen have moved on from Levy on Bell, I'm gonna
move on as well. And look, there's some of this
is self preservation. Some of this is it makes him
look better. You know that that not just with his
offensive lineman, but the thought that Ben Roethlisberg would need
Lady on bottom, need anybody else, I'm Ben Roethlisberger. What

(30:07):
a volatile mix in Antonio Brown. We heard the story
Yesterday's facing a lawsuit for going crazy because he had
some stuff stole in the off season. He got that
with Antonio Brown. Um, the defense hasn't been good much
of the year. You got the Levy on Bell thing,
you got Ben Roethlisberger and some of his comments ruling
the year, and now these comments about James Conner. What

(30:30):
a weird, weird situation for the Steelers who are coming
off of a huge win. I think, Look, I don't
think Ben Roethlisberger is nearly as good as his reputation
will tell you. And some of this takes us away
from actually watching how he plays football. He had as
bad interception as anybody's had all year, but they came

(30:50):
off a win and we're still talking about Levy on
Bell And that's where Big Ben, even though he feels
like Hey, I'm getting in on a conversation that everybody
in the locker room is gonna agree with me, and
I'll be kind of one of the guys. The timing
seems really odd and really off. Be sure to catch
live editions. So the Doug Got Leap Show week days
at noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio

(31:13):
and the I Heart Radio app. Dan, you want to
do this interview Danny for people don't know Danny is
a huge, huge Seahawks fan. Yes, I well, I I
will say this with Cliff Avril on the line. I
do believe that when we talk about Legion of Boom,
no one I should say no one, but the defensive
line doesn't get as much credit for how great and

(31:36):
dominant they were. And if you just look in the results,
whether it would be when he and Michael Bennett came aboard,
or even the season before when Chris Clemens was there
and ended up tearing his a c L and blowing
out his knee and then they lost to the Atlanta Falcons,
the defensive line is really what made the Legion of Boom.
The Legion of Boom. Welcome. Let's let's welcome in Cliff

(31:56):
Cliff Avril, who you can change j um. Yeah, I
mean listen, Uh, Richard Sherman gets all the credits. So
those defensive backs. The truth is, it was all the
guys up front, right, It always started with the guys
up front. But no, those guys are heck of ball
players as well, and and they know deep down inside
that you know, we played a big role in their

(32:18):
success in vice versa as well. You know, they would
always give us a lot of love after interceptions and
different things like that. So so we we understand the
correlation between the two. Um, your career was ended too
uh too soon because of a neck injury. What's what's
what's that like when the doctor says like, hey, dude,
you can't play football anymore? What is that? What is

(32:40):
that like? For some money as competitive as you. Yeah,
it's it's a weird situation for me, especially because, um,
you know, I didn't think my injury was that serious
when it happened. I was ready to go back in
the game, you know, I'm I'm The doctor was like, look, man,
like it's just a stinger. I'm good. I've had it before. Uh,
I felt like I've had this before. I can go

(33:02):
back out here and play. You know, thank God to
the doctor. He was like, no, you need to go
to the hospital. And that night is when I kind
of realized things might actually be over with um. It was.
It was a difficult process, but you know, at the
same time, I was fortunate enough to play ten years
in the NFL. I beat the odds by three. I mean,
I think the average is only three three years and
can change. Won a Super Bowl. I lost every game.

(33:24):
I've won a Super Bowl, been to the Pro Bowl.
What else can you ask for? You know? It was
a it was a great run. Nonetheless, Cliff Averyonel joining
us in the Doug Otlives Show on Fox Sports Radio,
I would point to last year's Rams game as the
the unofficial end of the Legion of Boom. Right that
the they come on, they're they're up forty nothing that

(33:46):
after that was after the Jacksonville game. What in reality
you being a part of that franchise? When did it
really end? Oh wow? When did the Legion of Boom
really is? Uh? I mean last year obviously was was
the big key of points to it. I mean, so
many injuries too. Now you gotta you gotta realize myself, Uh,
we lose camp Chancellor, sir. Uh so, so it was

(34:09):
guys that were banged up that have played a lot
of football over a five year period. So overall, Um,
you know, I would say probably that Arizona game was
what really you know, put the exclamation point to it.
Cliff Ariel joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Uh, there's still you know, a lot
of questions about about the Seahawks. I mean, I think

(34:30):
what's amazing is they draft for Shard Penny. He hasn't
done anything, but the running game hasn't been a problem
because Chris Carson went healthy is really really good. Um,
what how did this happen that Carson? And look, I'm
I'm an Oklahoma State alum, so I know the talent
that Carson had. He had trouble. Uh, he had trouble
staying healthy when he was in college. That shouldn't be
a surprise. But what's your reaction to somebody who knows

(34:53):
this franchise to the miss pick on Penny, but to
hit on Carson. Well, I mean Carson and Mike Davis. Now,
let's let's not leave him out because he's had he's
had you know, a hundred yard game, uh the week
before and and I think there's just a good one
to punch. Um. You know, the Seahawks have been trying
to find a running back ever since Marshawns left, at

(35:13):
least a consisted running games since marshawn Is left. And
and as of right now, you know, over the last
three weeks, they've been consistently been able to run the
ball and stacking up you know, a couple of hundred
yards a hundred, a hundred fifty yards of game, which
is impressive, and that's what they need. As far as
for Penny, I really just think, you know, it's a
it's a learning curve for him. Um. You know, he
got hurt earlier preseason, so he's kind of behind the

(35:35):
eight ball at the moment. And these other two guys,
they've had experience, they've played in some big time games.
So allowing him to to kind of learn from those guys,
I think it's key for him right now. One of
the question, one of the things I've always wanted is
it felt like, um, look the front office and and
Pete to a certain extent. Now, Pete had the benefit
when he first got there, having coached and recruited so

(35:58):
many guys that he had a great fee when they drafted.
But look, they've done a really good job in town evaluation.
Just look at the legion of boom and how many
guys were high draft picks to begin with. Right, So
as much as that was that was created, like the
same group can create it again. It feels like they
have some young talented players that because there have been

(36:18):
so many departures of so many great players from that
more than half decade of dominance, we don't realize that
Seattle's kind of got a nice little group of younger players.
Am I over selling what they actually have on defense
right now? No? No, no, you're not at all. I
truly believe that they do. I mean, like you just
said right there, when they got richest shermon, they got

(36:39):
camp Schanslor. Both of these guys were fifth six round
draft picks. You know when they got Doug Ball and
he was undrafted. You know, Russell Wilson third round, So
they can pick them. It's just all about just trying
to find the right ones in timing and all that
good stuff. They have a great group of young players
that are trying to figure it all out and they
have some leaders still there. That's the big difference between

(37:00):
when they first started and now is they still they
have a back in place, uh, with Russell Wilson obviously,
and then they have one of the best linebackers and
Bobby Wagoner that can actually lead these guys. And they
have played in some of these big time games. So
I think they're in the right path. I think they
have They're on the right path. Um, they just have
to continue to keep chopping away, and then I think
they're surprised that they'll shock a lot of people as well.

(37:21):
What do you think of the Rams? Are widely considered
the best your second best team in football? Should be
pointed out that both Cooper cup and Brandon Cooks both
went out last last game with concussions. Are both in
the protocol. Um. How impressed were you with the Rams
when you saw him on Sunday? I was at the game, man,
you know, I'm I was very impressed. They have an
all around good team. Um. But I will say as well,

(37:44):
you know, I think the Seahawks kind of showed that
they they have some issues that they need to clear
up if they want to take it all the way. Uh,
you know, with the running game and and just being
just being able to play better in the run game obviously,
But overall as a team though they're solid. They have
a solid quarterback in golf, they have a solid running back.
And I think that's the key player right there is
the h is Todd Gurley. Everything is played off of him.

(38:07):
If they established the run early, it opens up so
much for Golf, for Jared Golf, and and they show
it um but you know it's they're gonna be a
team to beat for sure in the NFC West. Yeah,
it feels like though that you gotta make you gotta
pressure Golf, you gotta make Golf eat it. But then
you gotta pressure Camblem. Just sit back there, Vikings, let
him sit back there. Charges with him, sit back there.

(38:28):
Whereas the Seahawks got after him a little bit and
and uh, and he showed some of his flaws that
fair most definitely. And and the thing with Jared Golf is,
you know, if you make a movie his feet in
the pocket, his percentage drops down tremendously. I think it
goes down to or something like that. So if guys
can get after him and make him move his feet
now to his old lines, credit as well. You know,

(38:50):
they're pretty solid team together. And if guys can get
after him consistently in the passing game, you know you'll
see You'll see his passes UH gradually decrease and in
his attempts decrease as well. Cliff April joining us in
the doug Otlip Show. You can check him out on KJR.
He's on daily Cliff Um. The Seahawks went in and
played the Bears a couple of weeks ago. I'm doing

(39:11):
a Bears game, doing sideline for Bears game. There's a
lot of talk about the dynamic pass rush that they
have led by Khalil Mack, but they have a they
got an athletic, young and active defense. Um, how come
how good are the Bears in reality? In your mind
that their solid team? I mean the quarterbacks playing solid uh.
And then you acquire probably one of the best D

(39:32):
lineman in the league with Khalil mackin and obviously you
see what he brings. He doesn't just bring sacks. He's
bringing turnovers, he's getting intersepts since he's scoring. He's doing
everything that most D lineman wants to be able to do,
or at least half of the stuff he's doing. If
other d lineman can do that, they'd be very productive.
So overall, you know they have a young, solid team. Uh,

(39:53):
they have a great leader in khalil Um. You know
that their old line actually is is playing well with
long playing and playing uh some good ball up there
and leading the way. Uh, they have a solid team.
They didn't have to keep chopping away. It looks like
detroits On there is kind of leading the way for
that for that division. But you know they can make
some things happen for sure. Yeah, it's gonna be fascinating

(40:13):
to see. Um. Last thing we started by talking about
the kind of the end of your run which was
stopped and even though you beat the odds because the
neck injury. What's your sense of Pete? Some people think, Pete,
you'll walk away at the end of this year, some
people thank you, he wants to They will rebuild on
the fly. What's your sense of Pete Carroll and how
long he's invested in staying in Seattle. Well, first and foremost, honestly,

(40:37):
Coach Carroll is probably one of the best coaches that
I've had from the standpoint of Jeff. The way he
coached he's a player's coach, and and you know that
it goes both ways. You know, him being a player's
coach can obviously be the reason why you know where
we're we're the demise of the LV quote unquote or whatever.
But probably one of the best coaches I've ever had,
and and and just a great person. As far as

(40:59):
for this upcoming season, I think it just it just
boils down to how this Suson plays out. Right. Uh,
if they go out and they do better than what
most people were saying at the beginning of season, which
I truly believe they will. I think they'll be above
five hundred for sure. Um, if they go out and
do that, I see him coming back and trying to
ride that wave and trying to take this team to
try to win a championship. But I believe it depends

(41:21):
on how this season ends up. Cliff Avril check him
out on KJR fifty in Seattle. Cliff, thanks so much
for joining us to continue success in your post football career.
