Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you from
(00:24):
the oh from I Almost Did It, Almost Did It?
My Bad Coming to you from Green Bay, Wisconsin and
Sherman Oaks, California. Welcome, Welcome in. It's a Friday, a
football Friday, a baseball Friday, an NBA Friday. We got
a lot to get to, a lot to get to.
(00:46):
Here's what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna actually work backwards.
Jay S's like, wait what, that's how what we planned on?
Hold on, give me a second, Jason. So the play
of the day actually is going to trigger the conversation
that we want to have to start show, which is
the end of the Dodgers and Phillies series. As we
(01:06):
welcome in Dan Byer. You can hear him on Sunday
on Fox Sports Radio. Of course she got I with
Sam and the Steam producer Jason Stewart, who is the
most informed and relatively negative Dodger fan that we have,
not just in our crew, but probably in Fox Sports Radio.
For over forty years, Tyrack has been helping customers find

the right tires for how, what and where they drive.
Ship fast and free back by free Road has protection
with convenient in solation options like mobile tire Insallation tyrack

Here's our Tyrack play of the day care of the
LA Dodgers AM five to seventy radio network.
Speaker 2 (01:42):
Heart rates through the room.
Speaker 3 (01:44):
The old one pitch Pa has grounds it back to Kirkery.
Speaker 4 (01:47):
He can't find it.
Speaker 5 (01:48):
He does home.
Speaker 6 (01:49):
It's why ten stores and the Dodgers are going to
the Championship Series. Fireworks to consider field the Dodger celebrate
your first base on a ground bull bet to the pitcher.
Andy pot has somehow gets the job done.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Paz gets the somehow gets the job done. We'll get
to the play in a second. First. That's the that's
AM five seventy LA Sports, the Dodgers radio network with
the call. Here's the Phillies radio network with the exact
same call, the.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
O one swinging a broken back comebacker Kirkering knocks it.
Speaker 5 (02:28):
Down, picks it up, fris why out. They home to
the backstop and the season is over. The Dodgers rushing
out passed Orion. Kirkering, who stands with his hands on
his knees, bet over.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
So I'll get to what our our group text was,
because we probably should have hopped on a call because
it was weird. First, here's here's a Ryan Kirkering, who
made the u this season ending error. He had this
exchange with reporters.
Speaker 7 (03:03):
How much do you think you can use this kind
of in the offseason?
Speaker 8 (03:06):
Thirty two?
Speaker 9 (03:07):
You know for good for sure? Yeah the wall with
the test wall for sure. But yeah, just kind of
keep going with it. Hopefully it started a long career.
Just keep back in my head and this really sucks
right now, but hopefully keep pushing.
Speaker 10 (03:25):
When to get over this.
Speaker 1 (03:27):
If you watch the game, you saw Rob Thompson, who's
the manager of the Phillies, grab kirk Kring before he
left the field. Here's what he said, or he said
he said to kirk Kring after the game.
Speaker 11 (03:39):
Rob obviously heartbreaking way to lose.
Speaker 9 (03:41):
Look to get a long conversation with Oryan coming off
the field, do you want to share a little what
you told him, or.
Speaker 12 (03:46):
Just to keep his head up. You know, he just
got caught up in the moment a little bit coming
down the stretcher. He pitched so well for us, and
I feel I feel for him because he's he's putting
it all on his shoulders. But we went as a
team and we lose as the teams.
Speaker 1 (04:03):
Here's Dave Roberts when he was asked about the final play.
Speaker 11 (04:05):
What are your feelings when it comes to Ryan Kirkering
right now seeing that happen on the other side.
Speaker 13 (04:09):
Oh, it's it's brutal. Obviously they played great defense tonight,
and you know it's one of those things that it's
it's a it's a PfP, a picture's fielding practice and
he's done it a thousand times and you know, just
right there he was so focused, I'm sure on just
getting the hitter and you know, just sort of forgot,
you know, the outs in the situation. So you know,
(04:30):
Kirkering is a stud and.
Speaker 1 (04:35):
Do we do we think he forgot the outs on
the play? I've heard that I heard Joe Davis say that.
I've heard it mentioned by people, but even Kirkering, in
his honesty, he didn't say that. And if you watch
the play, his body was clearly in position to throw
the ball at the first He just misplayed it and
(04:56):
that's when panic set in and he decided to go
home with a wild throw that it actually wouldn't have
matted if it was a good throw, even though the
runner was would have been safe. He'd missed the plate, right,
was that Keith k Ahernanez missed the plate? It was
Kim Oh, it was Kim missed the plate. Apologize. So
(05:17):
my question is, again this is based upon our group
text and what you've heard from several people. They believe
he missed he didn't know there was two outs, even
though he came in with two outs. I haven't heard
him say I forgot how many outs there were.
Speaker 9 (05:31):
No.
Speaker 11 (05:31):
We have sound of that running it through edit. Right
now he explains that it was indeed not that he
knew it was two outs, that he just under the pressure,
looked home and thought that was the next best play
after it kicked off his shoe. We had the explanation,
it's forthcoming. The Kim missed home plate because nobody in
(05:54):
the stadium thought that throw was coming home, including Real Muto,
the both dugouts, and everybody in the stadium. The last
thing anyone thought was that there was gonna be throw home.
Kim didn't even think to slot.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
If we are talking about, shouldn't you have had the slide?
Speaker 11 (06:12):
Yeah, no, no, not have to you should You should
slide just to be safe. But that's how remote a
chance he thought the ball was coming home. Nobody in
the world would have thrown that ball home. It was
so unordinary. Jeff Frankcoor in the moment on the live
broadcast said, first and foremost, he must have lost track
(06:35):
of outs, because if anybody who knows baseball is watching
that play, that's the only explanation.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
No, I thought the explanation was he bobbled the ball
and then he then he panicked and went to the
first available base that he saw.
Speaker 11 (06:50):
That's his explanation.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
Yeah, that's I think that's a reasonable buyer. You're you're
neutral in this, What do you think?
Speaker 10 (06:59):
I I thought that he thought that there was one
out or no outs at the immediate point until I
heard his comments of what he said, because it. It
doesn't make any sense, like if you if you knew
that there was two outs, and why I believe what
he said. It's just wrong on so many levels to
(07:21):
think that a guy at third would be the better
option after having a head start after it just it
doesn't make any sense. But I thought when the play happened,
he thought that there were less than two outs. I
even said that.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
Here, here's here's the full Orion Kirkland sound. You guys,
tell me what you think.
Speaker 9 (07:39):
Yeah, I thought, I mean just kind of once the
pressure got to me, I just thought it was a
faster thrower than JT, little quicker thrower than trying to
cross body at the price.
Speaker 7 (07:48):
So just throw up.
Speaker 14 (07:51):
Yeah, did you did you hear them calling telling you
to go to first at all?
Speaker 11 (07:56):
Or were you just in the moment that it wasn't
even just in a mode?
Speaker 8 (07:59):
Yeah? Can you can you see j pointing in that
moment or is it just kind of looking up, just
kind of looking up?
Speaker 9 (08:04):
Just be ready again, any a lot of guys in
energy and first one's there, guys say you and that,
just keep your head up. It's lost mistake. Just it's
baseball happens, and just keep your head up will be
good for a long time. They come. It's not my
fault done, just that opportunity to score, just a governa.
Speaker 11 (08:25):
Some rob to be same.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
What does that said?
Speaker 12 (08:27):
I mean, you know about those guys picking you up
so quick.
Speaker 9 (08:31):
Means a lot and shows they care a lot, just
means everything for sure. I'm sure a lot of guys
in here I've had moments early in their career you that,
you know, I think kind of remember very good that they.
Speaker 7 (08:45):
You know, how much do you think you can use
this kind of in the off season.
Speaker 9 (08:49):
So too, you know for good for sure. Yeah, the
wall with a test ball for sure. But uh yeah,
just kind of keep going with it.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Stut Gottlieb show here on Fox portrayer. That's all Ryan
kirklands that that was his explanation. Again, I I'm going
to respectfully just disagree with you guys. I agree you
don't go home there. Everybody knows you go home there.
But we are sort of diminishing the fact that he
misplayed the ball. And then that's when Panic said it.
Speaker 11 (09:22):
Yeah, I don't think you're disagreeing with anything. You asked
what we thought in the moment before the explanation.
Speaker 1 (09:29):
But now what do you think Now? You think he
didn't he lost track outs?
Speaker 11 (09:32):
Of course that's his that's what he said, that's his explanation.
Speaker 3 (09:35):
No, we didn't.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
He just said I lost track outs.
Speaker 8 (09:38):
He said no, No.
Speaker 11 (09:40):
Said the pressure. He just said that the pressure got
to me and I threw home. So I believe him, Yes.
Speaker 1 (09:49):
But he didn't say that he didn't know how many
outs there were.
Speaker 11 (09:51):
Never he never said that. That was what we speculated
in the moment. That's what Jeff said in the moment.
Speaker 1 (09:57):
But you still believe that. No, I didn't know the out. Okay,
my bad. Okay, well then I missed. I completely misunderstood.
That's whatever. Okay, We're all good. I don't know. I
just that's the magic of sports. This is where I understand.
I actually had. I had a great conversation with Don Yeger.
I have a new podcast out. I think it drops today.
(10:18):
Jase Duo knows more about that when it actually drops
than I do. And Don Yeger wrote a book called
The Science of Momentum. And one of the questions I
asked is you know their analytics is such a strong
part of every every business, now, every sports franchise, college sports,
(10:39):
as well, we use the analytics company all of these things.
But what the data people will tell you is there's
no such thing as momentum. Okay, it it always, you know,
regresses to the mean. And that's just those are well
you feel like momentum. Those are human That the stats,
the data doesn't lie, It doesn't take in human emotions.
(11:02):
It just says, hey, based upon all the data we have,
this is how many times this is successful and this
is not successful. And the greater the data set, the
more exact the stats are. And I'm going to tell
you that last night is the perfect example of I'm
respectful towards the data. I'm respectful towards analytics. It plays
(11:23):
a huge factor in how you try and build, like
a basketball program, a basketball team, how you run offense,
how you run defense. But at the end of the day,
there's still human beings out there. And the perfect example is,
no matter how young he is, he's played a lot
of baseball. He's taken he's taken the field, he knows
the play, he's ready to go. He gets albeit a
(11:46):
broken bat single right back at him, that should be
field the ball, throw it a first, go to the
next inning. And because of the pressure of the moment.
He was likely why he bobbled the ball initially, and
then the additional pressure and chaos of having the bases
loaded and a broken bat laying there and the crowd
going crazy and the game being on the line and
(12:06):
him just I just throw it home and he freaked
out and it looked like little league baseball. This is
not me telling you that analytics nerds don't have a
huge place in sports. And maybe Jason, you and I
discussed Dave Roberts the decisions they make and how much
of it is him, how much of it is the
front office, how much of it is the analytics department
(12:27):
that doesn't have feel data is important, but there's always
going to be the human element. And a young guy
had a chance to extend the series or extend the game,
fielding the ball cleanly, throw it to first, he misplays
it and then Butcher's where he should go with the ball,
and then butchered the throw and the whole thing ends
(12:49):
up costing his team the end of a game.
Speaker 11 (12:52):
Credit to him, by the way, credit to him for
admitting that it's pressure right. Well, first of all, he
took questions and most of the time you just hear
no excuse and then you're unfulfilled by like, well why
did you do it? And he actually said the pressure
got to me. How often do you hear pro athletes that.
Speaker 1 (13:11):
They won't they won't and you know what, they'll never
say the pressure got to me, and they'll never say.
I think Chris Bosh was the last one. He talked
about his first playoff series with Lebron. I remember he
played poorly and he was like, look, I'd just be
honest with you. I wasn't ready for that kind of pressure.
You know, go ahead, Dan.
Speaker 10 (13:29):
There's a different type of pressure with this though, because
I do think that Kirkering like you can maybe try
to plan, like, isn't the pressure that he's facing is
to get Pahez out, to strike him out.
Speaker 7 (13:43):
He just walked.
Speaker 10 (13:44):
I think you walked to Key k hernanis prior to that.
So the goal is to get him out, and then
if you don't strike him out, make sure that you
can make a play or get him to hit a
ball that can be fielded. And so even in that
situation of getting the pressure, sure he succeeded. He got
him to hit a ball that could be fielded and
(14:05):
then he didn't field it. And that's the part that
to me is just it's so unpredictable because if he
feels it cleanly in that scenario, I don't think that
there there's any issue. I just think it's the panic
that happened in that millisecond of what he was saying.
But because he felt that he bobbled it and that
(14:28):
the runner was coming home, that that everything then went
into chaos because how many times had a slow dribbler
just come back to the mound And if he knew
that there were two outs, he would know that he
would have all the time in the world. But that
millisecond of just watching the ground ball and him throwing
it is where the pressure got to him. I don't
think it got to him on the initial part that
(14:50):
we normally think of, let's just get this guy out.
Speaker 1 (14:53):
I agree with you, Doug ember One.
Speaker 11 (14:55):
We had Matt Holliday on uh IT on Tuesday. You
guys specifically about this that it's really tough to have
short touch throws when that's not your position. Pictures for
years have struggled with these touch throws. So even the
throw to first he would have been pressured to make.
But that throw is so unnatural. You're used to throwing
(15:17):
ninety five miles an hour home, and now you have
to have some kind of a touch throw because if
he throws it on time, he's out, and then we're
blaming Kim for not sliding right. It's so Matt Holliday
said it. He's like when you're used to throwing things
at a certain angle for a certain speed, that touch
throw is really tough. So then you add the pressure
(15:39):
of the moment to that touch throw, and it was
just chaos.
Speaker 10 (15:42):
And dug in your sport, how many times do we
see maybe in a late second situation, someone misses shot,
get their own rebound and put back an even worse
put back because they weren't necessarily ready for that. I
think we see it in basketball at times too, Like
you miss a shot, okay, that pressure, but all of
a sudden you get another chance.
Speaker 8 (16:01):
I'm do you know?
Speaker 1 (16:03):
So you just throw up all the time you miss
that to the timing in your head goes so much quicker. Yes,
Like we do this all the time. We talk about
with players. Hey man, every you have a you can
dribble with every second, like five seconds left, you can
take four dribbles and get all the way from rim
to rim, lay the ball in. You're fine, and they're like,
and then when you get the ball your your clock
(16:24):
just gets sped up. And look, a lot of that
is experience, and with baseball, outside of maybe playing in
the College World Series, there's just no ability to replicate
that that energy, that moment. Like, no matter how crazy
the environment is at Citizens at Citizens Bank Ballpark, still
(16:44):
is that what it is? Still in Philly?
Speaker 8 (16:46):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (16:46):
I think so, no matter how crazy that environment is
for a regular season game or even a postseason game,
whatever series, season on the line, bases loaded, two outs,
bottom of the eleventh inning, Like, you can't replicate that till.
Speaker 2 (17:01):
Next year Dodger Stadium. Yeah, nothing you can do.
Speaker 1 (17:04):
And so guys can be the coolest there is. I mean,
we're playing an exhibition game tomorrow night, right, Why Look,
we can't replicate We're playing Kansas No. Number three, fourteen
thousand people, if not the best coach in the country
is in any conversation, unbelievable athletes. The number one draft
pick this year is going to be Darren Peterson. Like
it's crazy. So we're just trying to replicate on some
(17:25):
level what the bodies and physicality are. But we can't
replicate fourteen thousand people streaming whatever I feel bad for.
We've talked about this. Baseball has two completely different seasons,
and Philadelphia is great fans, They'll have great energy. They'll
be series in the year when they play the Mets
and it'll be a zoo. But you can't replicate last night,
(17:46):
and the kid does it has until next year to
figure out if he can make that same play next year,
and even then we don't know until it happens. But yeah,
I completely agree with Dan, Like, that's the that's the
amazing thing about pitching is all you're thinking about, right,
And I'm sure part of it is He's like he
just walked Key k Hernann. He's like, that's still you
(18:07):
gotta like process, okay to wrote it up, but okay,
now what's my approach? And all of a sudden, this
ball comes back at you and you bobble it and oh, fudge,
only you didn't say fudge. Gosh. I love Fall baseball.
I love October baseball.
Speaker 4 (18:26):
This is the best of the Done Dot Lead Show

Gottlieb Show, set to the great Kenny Rogers tune the Gambler.
We give you one pick. This one pick is the
one that will get you right right, go all in,
(19:19):
because these are unpaid professionals who tout picks that may
or may not come through. Speaking of which, let's get
to our Jays Dude team parlay with Jason Stewart.
Speaker 4 (19:30):
Thank you, Doug.
Speaker 11 (19:30):
I'll take it from here.
Speaker 14 (19:32):
I'll take it.
Speaker 11 (19:33):
I need you guys to rush to the beding window
for this one. Rush to the beding window because the
game starts here in about three hours. South Florida visits
North Texas. This is a game South Florida. This is
a game North visiting North Texas undefeated.
Speaker 1 (19:48):
North Denton, Texas.
Speaker 11 (19:52):
I've got so many voices on my head. I have
the the actual singer, I've got the fake singer, and
I've got Sam. So if i don't respond to any
of those, it's because I'm being overwhelmed in my ears.
Speaker 1 (20:04):
Is your sciatica heard as well?
Speaker 11 (20:06):
You and lebron No, just my deafness, the disability that
I have filed with the government. South Florida is getting
two and a half points at North Texas. South Florida
is getting two and a half points at North Texas
takes South Florida, and I need you to pair him
(20:26):
with another team for the j Stude Parlay Jay's two
team Parlay Florida. Colorado State is hosting Fresno State and
they're getting six and a half points. I like Colorado State.
There Fresno State. Just a memo to you, Trent Dilfer
out of Lompoc High in the Central Central Coast. He's
not coming through that door tonight, Colorado State, South Florida
(20:48):
jaystud Team Parlay, thank you, Thank me. On Monday, dan By,
one of the.
Speaker 10 (20:57):
Cardinal sins of a gambler is to show their hands,
and Iowa, Sam was on to me earlier. You were
on to me earlier, Doug. I kind of showed my
hand for a pick. This week, Cleveland's a six and
a half point dog going on the road to Pittsburgh.
While all things, all things are in line for the
Steelers to get a win and cover that game, I'm
(21:18):
going with the one two punch of Dylan Gabriel and
Shador Sanders at quarterback to at least cover against the
Steelers on Sunday. Browns plus six and a half give
me that.
Speaker 7 (21:31):
By the way, guys, how cringey is that commercial where
they're at like a boardroom meeting and the guy sees
his boss's coffee mug and it's got a Georgia bulldog
on it. He starts like barking, Yes, it's very cringey.
In other words, I was trying to recreate that thank you,
yes that it brought that to my to my mind. There,
let's look at listen. Northwestern is visiting Penn State. This
(21:52):
is oh and two Penn State team. They're irritated. They're
a hair over twenty one point favorites here, three touchdown favorites.
I think They're gonna unleash hell on Northwestern. I'm gonna
pick Penn State to blow him out and cover that
twenty one and a half.
Speaker 2 (22:07):
H new end run, Doug, what you got?
Speaker 1 (22:13):
Well, I'm going to the NFL this weekend instead of
college football. I know my pick was great last weekend,
but I mean it. I liked. I love this Jacksonville pick.
I think they're dealing with good momentum. I know it's
on a short week and Seattle. I love how they
played offensively, and I know Sam Donald pulled to Sam
Donald and under pressure got hit and through an interception late.
(22:35):
But that's a long trip. It may not equal out
to a short turnaround, but it's pretty close. Jacksonville as
a home dog with a four and one start, which
they very easily could be five. And oh and I
think they're actually pretty good now that Seattle's bet. I
like Jacksonville straight up, straight up, and I'm getting a
point and a half. Give me the Jaguars, Jacks, These
(22:58):
jaguars not always in the shop.
Speaker 3 (23:02):
He goes, let's say no when the whole when loud,
not walk away.
Speaker 2 (23:15):
You never a money.
Speaker 3 (23:22):
Time and the count.
Speaker 1 (23:25):
At least no, no, no, no, Cotton Bowl Doug Gottlieb
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. You can see him
on Big Noon Kickoff tomorrow. Of course he's got his
bear Bets podcast. He's one only. Chris Felika, Fox Sports
betting analyst, the host of the bear Bets podcast, joins
us in the Doug Gotlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(23:47):
I think that was Jay su ju is all over
this North Texas game, right? That was that Jay stew
That was your your pick early South Florida, North Texas. Uh,
the Mean Green at home? My lean is the Mean
Green to add a home South Florida. Everybody's darling after
two big wins. Of course they got smashed by Miami.
Do you have a lean with the Mean Green getting
(24:08):
two and a half lay in two and a half, it.
Speaker 8 (24:11):
Feels like a higher scoring game just because South Florida
goes so fast. Could be an up and down the
field type of a type of game. Yeah, North Texas
is certainly there were a team that got a little
bit of like under the radar I type love is
a trendy pick and that conference to win. And just
because of the start that the Bulls had, people have
(24:31):
kind of gotten off their set a little bit, but
they kind of reverse things tonight and you can pick
up a winn. I think a lot more about people.
More people might be talking about the mean Green I'm
not gonna play it, will I will be watching. Feels
like a higher scoring game, but it is.
Speaker 1 (24:44):
A very high number to go over, no question about it.
Let's get into some of the big games the weekend.
My game that I actually am most interested in, uh,
is not the red River game Stott Ohio State Illinois.
It's not the SEC game. It's Oregon hosting Indiana, Oregon
(25:05):
hosting in the I mean I. Of course, we all
knew when the Big Ten combined with the Pac twelve schools,
this would be the big matchup. I'm kidding.
Speaker 8 (25:12):
Clearly, absolutely, the Hoosiers a football program is going to emerge,
and the Oregon would it would emerge as the second
best team in the Big Ten. Clearly we all knew that.
It is interesting though, because not only at Austin, but
also in Como this week. You over the last couple
of years, UH, the two best home records in the
(25:33):
country you have been Oregon and Missouri. And you got
Missouri as a small home dog, and then you got
Oregon in a top ten matchup this week, But I
like Oregon in this game. I think there's been a
little bit of an overreaction to Penn State losing Ucla.
A couple week ago. Everyone's like, oh, Oregon, they might
be the best team in the country. Now they went
to Penn State and won, won in the white Out,
(25:56):
and now because Penn State lost to Ucla, everyone's like,
I don't know, you might have to rethink zero's about Oregon.
If you think that the Penn State that showed up
the same night as the wide Out, it's the same
team that showed up in front of six thousand at
the Rose Ball last week. Same team. Your way off face.
This is an Oregon team that doesn't allow teams to run.
They're really good on both sides. The ball up front
(26:17):
and them find line of scrimmage and Indiana the last
couple of years. You look at last year when they
won on the road against Notre Dame in the playoffs
and against Ohio State in the regular season. The offense
did nothing and the offense didn't do anything. A couple
of weeks ago, kn't of either thirty had thirteen points
on the board until final minut and a half two
minutes of the game. I scored thirty two points in
(26:38):
those two games. Last year three and a half yards
of play. Didn't score a touchdown on Notre Dame until
a minute and a half to go in the game
thirty one to seven. Last year Ohio State before they
scored again. Whatever the reason is, it hasn't traveled on
the road against good teams. So we'll see. I think
Oregon comes out with chip on the shoulder and they
(26:59):
get a big win here.
Speaker 1 (27:01):
Ioways State got clipped by Cincinnati on the road. They
got down big and couldn't come back. I'm actually stunned
that Colorado is only a two and a half point
dog at home. See You has not looked like one
of the top teams in the Big in the Big twelve,
and then you have Dion with his health issues. Iowa
(27:21):
State's a two and a half point favorite on the
road at Colorado. Fifty one and a half's the total?
Am I crazy to love Iowa stating this pick?
Speaker 8 (27:28):
I think you are crazy because I actually liked see
You and I grabbed See You plus three. Iowa States
got a bunch of injuries in the secondary. They allowed
a eight yards of play last week against Cincinnati. And
if Colorado doesn't turn theling it, it's a massive diff
you know they If I had you don't want to,
(27:49):
I'd be a queen.
Speaker 1 (27:50):
Had a parent, you know what, she'd be the king.
If I had two heads, I'd be in the circus.
Speaker 8 (27:54):
Got it exactly. But Salter, uh see you could have
beaten BYU. See you one last week as well against
TCU late touchdown, get a bad beat if you had
CU last week. If Salton doesn't turn the ball over,
I think they have an opportunity to put up some
points here on the board. Iowa States a team I
think we all got a little high August. They won
a couple of coin flip games and they won the
(28:17):
sidehawk game, and it wanted to they want and double
it against k State and I don't know. Look, I
am a massive Iowa State supporter, but I think see
You plus the points and might be the right side.
Speaker 1 (28:28):
Red River rivalry OEU Texas feels like Matier is gonna play.
Also feels like Texas just disappointing. But in what this
is one of those games where sometimes things flip. Sooners
are a point favorite. Totals forty four and a half.
Looks like a hot day and big date.
Speaker 8 (28:47):
I'm not sure about Matier playing, and even if he does,
Hali effect, he's gonna remember earlier this year coaches love
to manipulate this. This injury report. You had Lane down
an all and miss, kind of saying Auton Simmons, Oh, yeah,
he's he's probable on the injury. Then he didn't play.
He had a couple of years ago in the Red
River game when oh you pulled the charade about about
(29:10):
Dylan Gabriel who got a concussion the previous week, and
all week long by my guys would say, he's not play,
He's not playing, he's not playing. And then good morning
of the games. He everyone sees him out there and
going through the warm up with the helmet on and
full UNI and everyone said, oh see he's out there,
he's gonna play. And then he comes out in shorts
and T shirt, doesn't play. So I think there's a
(29:30):
bit of gamesman ship going on here. I even as
actually have quitted this the line from the Natural about yeah,
Roy Hobbs, Yeah, but I don't want to play and
find good Yeah, with his inside he's is valuable too.
With swed in the lineup is out of the lineup,
and we're got twenty thousand dollars. Ritcher, I think if
if the tier plays like Texas defense, you know they're
(29:50):
just gonna be gunning for his hand every single play.
So I don't know. I like Texas here plus plus
the up point, I like him. I basically to win
the game. Uh. I think last week how poor their
defense was was alarming. But this is also an Oklahoma
offense that really is kind of middling in terms of
yards for play when you take into account for a
(30:11):
schedule adjustment. Kind of a kind of a good spot
here to catch Texas now with the line is flipped.
Speaker 1 (30:18):
Okay, you mentioned Alabama. They're a three point favorite at
Missouri totals fifty one and a half. This an Alabama
team that look last couple of weeks, has looked really,
really good. But at some point, like do you get
worn down by by Georgia, Vanderbilt and now Missouri on
the road before you get Tennessee and South Carolina before
(30:40):
you get a wake up, you just hit it.
Speaker 8 (30:43):
Right on the head with the at the nation's longest
home winning straight. You get revenge from losing it as
a twenty three and a half point dog last year.
Now you got to go to a fresh Missouri team
was awful bye, And we don't know how good Missouri is.
But you know the adage of ball like revenge and
teams and how much that's a an incentive and a
motivating and I'm sure you've been on the on the
(31:05):
losing side of a lot of a lot of games,
and you couldn't wait for the opportunity to get a
little bit of revenge next year. And I went back
and look, well, last year was thirty four to h
at Alabama. Drew Pye replaced an injured Brady Cook through
three picks, and I went back and looked just to
see if I was completely off base in it to
come back. Last twenty five years ranked teams that were
(31:28):
lost by more than thirty points at a shutout loss
with they have the opportunity venue in the following year.
There have been eight instances in the last twenty five years.
Five of the eight one out right, two lost by
a field goal, and one wound up losing to Alabama,
which wound up winning the national championship that year. So
it doesn't happen often, but when it does happen, there
(31:51):
is something to kind of and you know, Eli Dregwitz
and that staff is going to have that fall out
at the mouth Alabama a lot two hundred and thirty
yards on the out to Florida State by two thirty
on the brown to Georgia. Uh, with Hardy and Probola.
Do it for a guy. I think it's a great
spot in Como for an upset tomorrow.

Speaker 8 (32:23):
Absolutely appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (32:25):
You're you're the best. Have a great Saturday. We'll see
on TV. Thanks for being our guest.
Speaker 8 (32:29):
You do the same dog you will.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
Okay, let's bring in buyer, Buyer. Any concern about your
Buckeyes taking on Illinois.
Speaker 10 (32:39):
Yeah, I mean there's there's concern no matter how big
of a favorite that you are. A road game.
Speaker 8 (32:44):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (32:45):
Julian Saying's second career start on the road, that could
always be a question but he's been brilliant so far.
I expect Ohio State to win, but there's always a
bit of of hesitation for sure.
Speaker 1 (32:58):
You know, one of the games that I I was
thinking about it is the Oklahoma State game. They're taken
on Houston and they're a big home dog. But part
of it is, you know, they're down to a walk
on quarterback because they lost their top two quarterbacks and
they've had two or three of their best players put
themselves in the portal this week. It's like they're at
(33:19):
home against Houston, who has been okay. The other four
to one fairly solve schedule, been okay. But there's so
many of these. Yeah, No, they get destroyed by Tech Tech.
First of all, Texas Tech guys is like a thirty
million dollar team. So a lot of teams that get
destroyed by Texas Tech. Okay, they're really really really really good,
really good, and we're not. Oklahoma State is really not good.
Speaker 7 (33:42):
Thirty five to eleven isn't a a destruction. No, No,
on the road, that's a good win.
Speaker 1 (33:49):
No.
Speaker 7 (33:49):
I was said, Texas Tech is really good. That's what
I'm saying.
Speaker 1 (33:51):
No, Texas Tech is legit.
Speaker 8 (33:53):
Man.
Speaker 1 (33:53):
They went and beat Utah at Utah, and I think
everyone can. If there's a team from the Big twelve
that could compete nationally based upon personnel, and and that
personnel is because of the money they spent, it's Texas Tech.
Speaker 10 (34:05):
I still go back to Brett Yormark's comments at Big
twelve Media Day when saying when they were talking about
the formats of the playoffs and why they were siding
with a like a five plus eleven model that the
SEC was pushing for as opposed to like the four
plus four plus two. You know, YadA YadA, YadA any
(34:27):
any any said that like he believes in the schools
in the future, and I think he was.
Speaker 2 (34:33):
He was talking about Texas Tech like.
Speaker 10 (34:37):
Of being that school of in this world of college
football right now, or of the arms race and the
wallet race. Maybe that Texas Tech is going to be
well equipped to compete.
Speaker 1 (34:53):
I think they'll be well equipped to compete.
Speaker 10 (34:56):
I think that's what that's like when we look at
them and we're like, aw, where are their good team teams?
I think his point is Texas Tech is going to
be spending money, they are going to be like this
is this is the arrival of Texas Tech and that
they won't be going anywhere for a while.
Speaker 1 (35:09):
Yeah, I think Texas Tech. I think BYU. But he
says they have the money, although most of that's in basketball,
and you know Ryan Smith is putting it in basketball.
I just don't know if they have enough teams. I mean,
part of it is just size of alumni. You know,
you have and type of alumni. But the Oakland State,
when you got Oaklhand State, you got Virginia Tech, you
(35:33):
have UCLA going on the road to Michigan State after
their gigantic win against Penn State. What does that look
like like? This is a These guys still have days
in which they can enter the portal.

Speaker 1 (35:57):
It's Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Quick Update, guys,
Uh Buyer, I don't are you a Chipotle guy Buyer.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
I've never been to Chipotle real, Sammy. I love Chipotle
above q Doba.
Speaker 9 (36:12):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (36:12):
You know, I had Kidoba at the airport.
Speaker 8 (36:14):
It was good.
Speaker 7 (36:14):
I just haven't had enough of it to really like
equate it to Chipotle, but very similar. I mean, I
guess I just did, right there.
Speaker 1 (36:21):
A new dipping sauce for Chipotle, Chimmy Cheery sauce. Chimmy
Cheery sauce. Just if you're if you're driving and you're
listening to us and you're like, oh, Chipoli sounds kind
of good. You're getting thumbs up from Godly and the
Jimmy Cheries. Okay, just for people who want to know,
I'm I'll be anybody's canary in the canary in the
coal mine. Let's welcome in. Mark Dominic course, he was
(36:42):
a he's a former general manager of the Tampa Buccaneers.
He worked his entire professional life in the National Football League.
And what's your reaction to the Giants thumping the Eagles
last night?
Speaker 14 (36:56):
Yeah, something's right. Dan's never been to Chipotle. I mean,
that's a big story than the Eagles, I think. But
I think it's just kind of a shock that, you know,
we saw I think the Jews and I think it
really it spoke volumes when we watched it, when Jackson
Dart went under the shed and had to kind of
get a doctor's opinion, and you could see just how
(37:17):
Brian day Ball was pacing because he knew this is
the reason why we're going to have a chance to win.
This is what's gonna work. And just to concern that
they had it wasn't he wasn't going to be back.
You could tell how important it's been to have Jackson
Dartist a quarterback and how much I think it gave
the hope in the aspirations of this Giants team that's
saying a lot of things have gone wrong, but this
is going right and they found their guy.
Speaker 1 (37:39):
Does it? Does it last?
Speaker 8 (37:42):
Right?
Speaker 2 (37:42):
Like the new guy?
Speaker 1 (37:43):
I mean, even we look at backups in years past,
we all have one, right, we all have one guy.
I mean famously Don Mkowski here in in Green Bay.
You pick it. Young guys can come in because you
don't have a scout on him. They have great energy,
they think they're supposed to win every game. You watched
a lot of quarterbacks in the NFL. Does this last?
Speaker 14 (38:06):
I think it lasts in terms of the way he
makes decisions, the way he plays. I don't think it
can last. Honestly, Doug, by the way he runs, that's
not going to happen. I mean, you know the nick
he took last night to have to you know, go
see potentially a concussion doctor or whatever that was, and
then to watch him turn around and calls a number,
and the way he finishes and runs at this level,
he will not make it a whole season. He can't.
(38:28):
They're too physical at this level and it's going to
be too many hits, and so he's got to learn
how to run better. But I think in terms of
throwing the ball, some of the throws he made his
decision making those things look real, and I don't think
that's just an anomaly. I think that's a real thing.
So it's about him learning how to slide or when
to you know, kind of give up on a run
is going to be the more important thing that I
(38:48):
think it's going to be worrying about. Can you do
this again next week?
Speaker 1 (38:52):
Cam Scataboo so sax State, Arizona State two years ago.
He had some good games in Arizona State. Last year
awesome games at Arizona State. But doesn't have a lot
of the tangibles, so he doesn't go high in the draft.
But after that, now the the intangibles take over. Obviously,
(39:15):
last night was a great night in New York, but
we've seen Tommy DeVito as a backup quarterback, does Cam
scadbook Can he last the way he's running the football?
Speaker 14 (39:22):
I think he can. You know, he plays with great balance,
and I think that's the thing when you think of
running backs that can really play at this level. He
takes hits, but can keep his feet moving and keep
moving forward and not fall down easily. And I think
that's that's that hidden thing functional football strength. You know,
we can talk about the weight room in the two
twenty five and how many reps a player did, but
(39:43):
then there's another thing to watch as you think about
functional football strength, and that works for every position in
the NFL, but for running back it shows it pretty good.
It's the guy that you know falls forward or you know,
bounces off one little tackle to be able to get
four or five more yards in a carry. I know
he was a couple of yards short of one hundred,
but I mean right now he's averaging over four yards
of carry in the NFL. And the way he runs
gets me pretty excited about just how fucking physically he
(40:05):
is and just that he turns the ball up field.
He's not looking to dance around, but he also catches
the ball really well out of the backfield. So I
think this is a nice fine for the Giants. You know,
you feel like this would have been a Shanahan find
based off of how good he's been able to do
and find running backs over his career. But this one's
won for the Giants and it's a good feather in
the cap because I think he's the real deal.
Speaker 1 (40:27):
What's wrong with Eagles.
Speaker 14 (40:30):
I think there's a lot of individuals going on right now.
I don't think it's Saquon Barkley. I think Jalen Hurts,
this is playing marginal. I feel like the offensive line
isn't holding up as well as they did last year.
I feel like they're missing a lot of players on defense,
the secondary. I know Ringo had you know, good moments
and tough moments last night, but he's getting good reps
as a second year first tim to start. I think
(40:51):
that's big for Ringo. But I think they missed some
of the veterans that they had out there. And I
think some of the younger guys, whether it's jayalax Hunt
or something like that, who's just not able to get
home right now. I think that's the big thing. They're
not getting enough pressure on the quarterback consistently. And to me,
that's the big difference of the Eagles this year is
that they're just not able to do that and because
of that, drives or extended drives are taking longer, as
(41:13):
you know, and I think that's a big piece of
what's kind of wearing them down a little bit. I mean,
this is a team that, yeah, you know, they're leading.
I think pass rusher are both their defensive tackles. That's
that's the problem with the Eagles right now, is they're
not getting pressure off the edge.
Speaker 1 (41:30):
Is that a Is that a talent thing or is
it an experienced thing.
Speaker 14 (41:34):
I think it's an experience thing. And I say that
because I do think Jalox Hunt is going to continue
to get better as we watch him, you know, miss
and Jalen Carter out there also is a huge piece.
And so him sitting on the sideline last night doesn't
help the Eagles front at all as well. But I
do think it's Jalox Hunt is going to be a
big piece of what they've got to do and get
him confidence and he's I think they're going to come
(41:55):
in bunches when it comes. But right now, he's just
been rushing as far, but he's not getting all the
way home. I think he will, but I think it
also means to get Jalen Carter out there to help
you take some pressure off it and then him have
one of those more of those one on one.
Speaker 1 (42:08):
Rushes Doug Gottlieb Show. Here on Fox Sports Radio, Mark
Domini's our guest course, former general manager Tampay Buccaneers joins
us every week and gives us a real GM front
office scouting perspective on the National Football League. What was
your reaction to Joe Flacco, who was demoted to be
in a backup after Dylan Gabriel got the start last
week getting a mid season trade in Division in Ohio
(42:32):
to the Bengals.
Speaker 14 (42:35):
You know, as soon as when the Bengals lost this
last game, I thought, there's just no way the Brown
family is going to sit there and throw number one.
They're frugal and rightfully so. However they want to handle
their business, they can handle their business. But they spent
so much money in this offseason. I knew that the
Brown family isn't just going to sit on their hands
and go, well, we'll just see what happens in twenty
(42:55):
twenty six, not with this roster, not with you know,
Trey Hendrickson possibly or probably leaving. They need to put
something together, and they look at this division and they're going,
wait a second, the Ravens are struggling, yet Pittsburgh's had
a good start in Cleveland's struggling. We can still get
in this thing, and we can still get the nine
wins and possibly ten wins, and so what do we
do see? You know, I thought you got to call
Kirk Cousins or Atlanta. I think you could call Davis Mills.
(43:18):
I was thinking about him a little bit that I
still think there's some potential with him. But you know,
it was easy when Joe Flackle got bench. You just
go with the older veteran quarterback who is going to
come in, learn the playbook quickly and be able to
go out there and execute. And so I think it
was the right movement. I think it was the right
move for both clubs. Look to Cleveland. Browns is now
traded away Kenny Pickett and Joe Flackell, So good for them.
They're getting some collateral even though they're putting quarterbacks in
(43:41):
other people's divisions.
Speaker 1 (43:44):
That said, Chador is going to be the backup. So
you have a rookie starter and a rookie backup. How
much leash do you give Dylan Gabriel when you got
a rookie behind him?
Speaker 14 (43:55):
I think a lot, right, Doug. I think you really
let Gabriel kind of see how well he can go.
And I think that's for weeks. Even if he goes
you know, zero touchdowns, three interceptions, you don't pull the
trigger too quick. They both hopefully will get real time
this year to kind of get a sense of are
they ones or twos or threes? And I think that
still can happen. But right now, I give him a
(44:16):
longer leash, like at least a month of games to
say what can he do? Because you know, they drafted
him before Shauduer for a reason and they feel like,
you know, he's got the potential, and they certainly have
spoke well of him in terms of his locker room
presence and what the team responds to him, so they've
said the right things to say. Look, they want to
give this guy longer leash, so I would expect that.
And if he goes h to two, I think he's
(44:37):
got a chance to go three to four before I
think they make a move.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
The Baltimore Rams are struggling. Lamar Jackson still looks like
he's out. They do have a bye week coming up.
When is the moment that they waive we know about
the division, right, that division can be had. But they
got the Rams, Okay, then bye week, then Bears, then
they go. Then they got three games in a row
on the road, granted not three great teams, Dolphins, Vikings.
When is the point that the Ravens go, yeah, this
(45:03):
might not.
Speaker 10 (45:04):
Be our year.
Speaker 14 (45:05):
Yeah, I mean, I think there's a good chance to
go one in five to start the year, Which is
crazy that you would think that the Baltimore Ravens. When
I thought those are the Buffalo Bills, I thought would
be the team that would be hosting the Lamar Hunt Trophy.
But you know, we're sitting here and I think they
lose to the Rams this week. But I do agree
with I think one bye week, a self scouting Harba,
Lamar Jackson should be back. But when you look at it,
(45:28):
one in five, but it goes Bears, Dolphins, Vikings, Browns, Jets, Bengals, Steelers, Bengals, Patriots.
I mean, you could make an argument that they could
win every one of those games. Now, the way they're playing,
they probably wouldn't. But they've lost to Buffalo, Detroit, Kansas City,
and then lost to Houston without Lamar Jackson. So if
not like they're losing to bad teams. The only smothered
(45:50):
to Cleveland Brown. So I think this team just needs
to get to the bye week. But I think they're
going to rattle off a bunch of victories and put
themselves back in the postseason. So I would still say
I think the Ravens make the postseason.
Speaker 1 (46:01):
Wow. Okay, what was New England's win more about New
England or about Buffalo?
Speaker 14 (46:10):
I thought it was more about New England. I think
it was a huge culture movement that's going on there
to be able to win that game. It just goes
again to show what you know, coach has been able
to do with you know, Coach Rabel's been able to
do with maybe less talent. He did it where I
live here in Nashville for years, and I think a
lot of people are like, Ah, he's not that good
of a coach, and then they pull them away and suddenly,
(46:31):
you know, Titans can't get out of their own shadow,
and you know, the GM that was with him. John
Robinson great guy, but there wasn't There were some misses
in the draft. Picks and first rounders didn't come through,
even for coach Rabel here in Nashville. And so I
think he's just showing that I can build a winning
tradition of winning culture. That was a huge win for
the New England Patriots, just to kind of build morale
within the organization. And again, this is a team I
(46:52):
didn't think it was going to be good enough. I
know a lot of people have them as like the
turnaround team of twenty twenty five, but you start to
look at their schedule to Saints Titan's next three weeks,
they can really do some damage.
Speaker 1 (47:02):
Right now, Kansas City looks better. Big game against Detroit
coming in over seven yards of play? Where are you
on on Kansas City? And uh, if they're if, I mean,
I look at you lose to Jacksonville. I think Jackson's
pretty good. But I did think the offense woke up
last week. On the other hand, you know the defense
of Chris Jones not getting not getting Trevor Lawrence down
(47:25):
has been a big kind of controversy in Kansas City.
Where are your thoughts on Kansas City welcoming in the Lions.
Speaker 14 (47:32):
Yeah, you know, I love the Chiefs, but I just
think Detroit off the edge is going to be too
much trouble for him. And I think the offensive line
for the Chiefs is going to show up a little
bit more this week where it's going to be a problem.
So I like Detroit in this game, even though it's
hard to imagine the Chiefs being two and four, But
I just feel like the Chiefs are a good football
team that will again, I think, find their way to
the postseason. I still don't think they're going to win
(47:53):
their division for the first time in forever, it feels like.
But I think the Detroit defensively is going to be
too much for Kansas City offensively, and I think because
of that, and again, when you look at the Kansity defense,
the one thing you want to see is more speed,
and they don't have a ton of speed on the
Kansity defense. They're technically sound that they're not fast. They're
(48:14):
more physical, and I think Detroit has a fairly fast team,
so I think both sides kind of match up for Detroit.
So I like Detroit this game.
Speaker 1 (48:21):
Awesome stuff as always Mark, have a great weekend. We'll
talk to you next week. Always love your insight, Doug.
Speaker 14 (48:27):
Thanks for having me on. Enjoy your weekend.
Speaker 10 (48:28):
I don't know if I'll try the new chimney cherry sauce, Doug.
You know I like things playing, but uh yeah, if
I do go to Chipotle, I'll definitely try to get
some chicken and rice back to you.
Speaker 1 (48:37):
There you go, chicken, rice and all things. That's all.
It's all Hayes gets. My son, Hayes, he does the
He just does a bowl with chicken and rice.
Speaker 7 (48:46):
No cheese, Dan, No, no, no, definitely no peppers.
Speaker 1 (48:50):
