(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom Up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Coming to you from the
City of Angels where the Clippers continue to have more
winds than the Lakers. Lebron James and the Lakers fight

(00:44):
off a six point deficit in the waiting seconds of
regulation of force over time and then choke a win
in the extra session and the Spurs come away with
the wind. I got my recap of it. You can
see some of the video I put out on Twitter
last night at Gottlieb Show is the Twitter handle. Um.

(01:05):
I also think there's the officiating. Just like the NFL,
the officiating is changing in the NBA and it could
bring back what used to be the most important position
in the NBA. If the officiating sustains itself. We gotta
get to that. Oh, we have World Series Baseball getting
underway to night. Got to love the World Series. I

(01:28):
love the World Series. Now. I can't sit here and
chapter and verse on a bunch of different World series,
but when they're good teams, big name teams and interesting
like I'm in. And I love the juxtaposition of first
two or in Boston, where you got all those mass
holes screaming and yelling and drinking and talking about Smitty

(01:51):
and have it Yad and packed the cat and whatever. Um.
They went from a fan base that people felt sorry
for to one into which people are annoyed by how
much fandom there is. I love the fact of you
you can go to the mouth now on the mound,
because it's called you can blow your hands and maybe
throw a little vasoline on the baseball whatever. And then

(02:15):
of course three three and four or three four and five,
three and four and then six right is in Dodgers
Stadium is a three four five three four five or
Dodgers Stadium Chevez ravine is. I mean it's perfect right
like on on the on the sixth day. Really, what
he did was he created Dodger Stadium so on the

(02:37):
seventh day he could watch baseball. It is perfection. There's
nothing wrong at all with Dodgers Stadium. It's not surrounded
by anything other than the City of Angels, which it
kind of hovers above, and ravine, kind of a plateau.
It's amazing. But it'll be warm, it'll be sunny, and
a complete different style of fan base. It's gonna be awesome.

(02:58):
And then we have the NFL and a weird story
out of Denver where apparently Chad Kelly, known by those
of us who followed him in college or even during
his junior college year as swag Kelly. Swag Kelly apparently
got drunker than Coudar Brown and end up on some
random ladies couch, mumbling and stuttering all over himself. You

(03:20):
don't know who Coudar Brown is? Real quick, before I
get to the NFL story of the day. Coud Brown
apparently lived on the border of a slave state and
a free state during the time of the Civil War.
Instead of making a decision on which side to fight for,
he just got drunk. The entire that there in lies
the reference drunker than Couterar Brown. Say you learned something

(03:40):
today from your boy gott lieb so swag Kelly Junker
than Couter Brown. What's that meaning from a guy who
was on a path to potentially playing this year for
the Denver Broncos. More on lebron as well to come.
So the New York Giants lose, but when for me
and Buyer. That's because as me and buy Are both said,

(04:01):
they would cover and we can get to this function
within the Giants. The fact that these are when I
watched the NFL, it's a lot like watching NBA officiating.
You know what they say about NBA officials come the playoffs, right,
these are the best officials in the world, and sadly
they actually are. We watched the NFL and we're told

(04:21):
these are the best coaches in the world, and yet
they can't seem to manage the clock to save their life.
But to me, the story of the day is the
use of analytics and and how guys are like, look,
the analytics told us, and the analytics said, and it
relates to baseball in many ways. It relates to the

(04:41):
NFL with some of these trades. Last night, the New
York Giants, we're down fourteen points, they score touchdown, they
go for two, and analytics guys are like high fiving
because Pat Shermer, who's dumb enough to not understand lolock management.
It's smart enough to know to go for two when

(05:03):
you're down four teen, because the analytics tell you it's
actually a better than shot. You get it, and if
you don't get it the first time, you go for
two the second time. Here's Pat yourmer after the game.
You increase your chances by if you go for it
and make it there. That's what you do because then
if we score a touchdown, we just kicked the extra
point win and I felt good about the two point play.

(05:24):
I think we got the ball in there right, and
we just didn't connect on it. Listen, we just didn't connect.
You increase your chances or you put a ridiculous amount
of pressure on your team to convert a two point
play if in fact you don't get it. And oh yeah,
by the way, you don't have a good red zone
team because you have a one dimensional quarterback. You're still

(05:46):
playing ten on eleven as opposed to other teams that
have more mobile quarterbacks can play eleven on eleven. And
while he's technically right, he does in fact have the
numbers right. Numbers don't tell you count next. They just don't.
It's it's just like we saw with Tennessee early Saturday morning.

(06:08):
If you're West coast listening the show, you might excuse
me me Sunday morning, your West coast, you might not
have been up in time. You might have a long
bender on Saturday night. But I'll give you the I'll
give you the short rundown. The Titans were actually the
better team. The Titans drove down late, scored a touchdown,
and instead of kicking the extra point and playing for overtime,

(06:28):
they went for two and and analytics guys and machismo
football guys like, that's it ended. Go for two up top.
But again, the context matters. It's not just a play call.
The Chargers were on the field for thirty six minutes.
Don't remember the Chargers left on Thursday. They have to
fly the furthest distance in the NFL to get to London.

(06:50):
They land in London, they play a game which is
by their body clock, six thirty in the morning. They're
completely gassed. There without Melvin Gordon, there without Joey Bosa,
that out there without two or three other starters as well,
and the Titans had him on the ropes and instead
you would go for two when you're in the inferior
team and your team is gassed. They did the opposite.

(07:12):
But that's because the the the analytics, and the news
of numbers lacks context. It's just like I heard I
was listening to cow Herd coming in and Collins a
dear friend of money. He's like, look, Cowboys could have
drafted a first rounder in the draft, but instead they
trade for Mari Cooper, who's better than any first round pick.

(07:32):
And you know what, he's right, But the context matters,
all right. The context of it is Mary Cooper is
gonna make fourteen million dollars next year guaranteed. That thing
is already extended, already signed. So the Cowboys are either
have to pay him that money and have a substantial
cap hit which limits their flexibility in the off season

(07:52):
and they already have cap issues, or they're gonna have
to rework his deal after only seeing him for eight games.
Like context, So I'm not telling you that numbers this is.
This is just like in the NBA with the Houston Rockets,
when you sit there and go like, hey man, they
should keep shooting those threes because the numbers tell you

(08:14):
that corner three's, it's effective of the effective field goal
percentage is higher than any sort of two oops in
a row. What what they don't tell you is when
you're playing in a game, when you're playing in game
seven and you're totally gassed as well as guarding some
of the best best players in the world. Remember when

(08:37):
you when you play Golden State, you don't just have
to play defense for twenty four seconds. Oftentimes they shoot
the basketball and you get they get an offensive rebound,
and now you gotta run out to the shooters because
they like to get it and kick out for a three.
The level of attention to detail on defense takes away
from your offense. The seven game series takes away from
your legs. And when you start missing five in rows

(09:00):
Henner Road twelve and Row fifteen row, it's like a
it's like a cold that starts spreading through the team,
and every time the ball goes up, there's a gas
because it's almost like you know you're not gonna make
the next one. But analytics don't tell you that. Analytics
tell you you're you're just as likely to make the
last shot as you are the next shot. But that's
not the way it works. In real life. Check out

(09:23):
these stats from Eli Manning. I want you before you
hear them, I want you to ask yourself. If Eli
Manning is having a good season, are you having it
very good, a great season, a very good season, a
good season, below average season, or a terrible season. Think
about that in your mind. Now, think about this. He's

(09:44):
six in passing yards, he's tied for eighth and completion percentage.
He's thirteenth in yards per attempt seven point six nine.
His four interceptions this season is fewer than Jared Goff,
Pat Mahomes, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger. By those stats, if
you cherry pick the stats you like, you're like, dude,

(10:05):
good year, still got it. Qbr is forty three passing
TVs with only seven. That's context. He's a one dimensional quarterback.
You're in the in the red zone. They're they're ineffective.
And so while you can Pat Shermer can sit there
and try and outsmart the room, going a man, they

(10:26):
go for two. You increase your chance about you kick
the field goal, and then you're done. You're good. Sound
like putty gouts put team, Well, let's put team. But
the fact is it context matters. And you're down fourteen,
kick the extra point, you're down seven, then maybe you
go for two. If you want to win the game,

(10:49):
don't try. And sometime you try and outsmart the room,
and you outsmart yourself because in addition to the fact,
you may increase your percentages of winning if you go
for two down fourteen, he's statistically right with with the
emotion that you lose. The momentum that you lose when
you go for two and don't get it is substantial.

(11:11):
And maybe it's not measurable, but if you didn't feel
it watching I sure as hell did. Take a listen
to Jason Garrett earlier today. You know, at the times,
the production of the receiver has a lot to do
with a lot of things that are around him. You know,
your your numbers can be a function of what the

(11:33):
environment is and how the team's playing in general. You know,
he's not a perfect player. Nobody is. There are certainly
areas where he can improve, but there are so many
positives about him. So look, you're sitting there saying, look,
we like a Marii Cooper, and you can look at
the numbers and how they've gone down the last year
and a half but context doesn't matter, which is really

(11:54):
all we're saying about analytics and saying about Pat Sherman
is whilst if you live and die by analytics, you
tend to be dying by analytics, just like the same
criticism goes for goes for Hey, I don't need analytics,
should go for the Hey, it's about analytics. There's a

(12:16):
balance between the two. And you gotta have feel, you
gotta have understanding. If you simply go by the book,
the book lacks. The book lacks that tangible something like
what the French call is certain. I don't know what
Enna say qual Anyway, the numbers do, in fact lie
at times on Eli Manning. They will lie in fact
when you should go for two. And if you didn't

(12:37):
feel like the air was out of the balloon when
they were down fourteen and went for two, you might
not have been watching the same game I was watching.
Let's turn our attention to the World Series coming up next.
MLB Insider for Yahoo Sports Jeff pass And joins the show. Um,
we had like a tale of two kershaws. Last series
got lit up in game one and then was JJ

(13:00):
was like JJ from Good Times. Dino might in his
second start, what can we expect? And was it Craig
Kimball just tipping pitches that's why he was getting lit?

Very important to point this out. Look, I love the
use of new ideas. I like guys that go forward
on fourth down. I like guys that that go for two.

(14:49):
But the idea that it's just hey, look, analytics tell
you you go for two. You help. The percentage context matters.
So even if Shermer is right, hey, and and even
if you're like, look, I'm right, you play the percentages. Remember,
like Mark Helfridge, who's the former head coach at Oregon,

(15:11):
he's now the offensive coordinator for the Chicago Bears, Mark
Helfres basically lost his job over analytics. They had a
bad season, and they had a ton of injuries, and
they had they weren't great at quarterback. And by the way,
the quarterback they have and all the veterans they have,
those guys are brought on campus by Mark Helfridge, Like, oh,
he can't recruit Oh the number one pick in the

(15:33):
upcoming NFL draft was recruited by Mark Helfridge. But here,
here's what's in here's what's important. They played in Nebraska
on the road and I'm gonna say they went for
two like six times and like didn't get any of them.
And again, remember the I think I don't know what

(15:53):
the number is on on in college when you have
often you get it's like fifty one or fifty two
percent of the time. Like if you you convert fifty
one percent or fifty two percent a time, uh, you're
you're gonna you're gonna score more points than if you
kick an extra point every time because you make an
extra point. Like in college, it's like and in the
NFL it used to be like nineties seven used to

(16:14):
be before they moved it back. So what what people
make the mistake of thinking is if you didn't get
it the first two times, well, then there's like an
eight percent shot you get it the third time, and
shot you get the fourth time. Like, No, it's not
actually the way it works. The way it works is
if you had a fifty percent shot of getting the
first time, you got a fifty shot of get in

(16:35):
the second time. That's the true way analytics work. Where
it does feel like the reality of it. The reality
is if you get it the first time and you
get it the second time, you have a tendency to
get it the third and the fourth time, even if

(16:55):
analytics would tell you that's not actually the case, right,
analytics I tell you you have the same chance. But
if you if you convert on the first and a
second second opportunity, then what's gonna happen is that team
is gonna be pointing fingers and seeing ghosts. Whereas if

(17:15):
you get stopped in the first and second opportunity, oftentimes
you will lose confidence in it, confidence that the human
element is a massive, massive key. We'll get you Jeff
Passing from Yahoo Sports in a moment, but first let
me read you this story from Marcus Thompson. Marcus Thompson
just here where he works for the Athletic, But he

(17:37):
also used to write for the Bay Area News Group,
so it's not like this is his first time covering
sports in northern California. He wrote that Derek Carr has
a fracture relationship with teammates. Reportedly, fracture relationship between Car
and his teammates rooted and loss of confidence in the quarterback,
as exasperated by game film from the London contest against

(17:58):
the Seahawks that showed what looked like him crying after
being sacked and injured his arm. They saw his face,
they heard him whimper. They witnessed him explain on the sidelines.
They assuredly watched again the film's film session. It's hard
to see how Car can lead this team again. It
was indeed curious, Marcus writes to say the least to

(18:20):
see video will appear to be Car crying in a
melt that melting face, the way a kid would cry
after falling off his bike. If Thompson's report is accurate,
Car's teammates regardless something worse than curious. Remember, his contract
pays out an average of nineteen point six million over

(18:41):
the next four years, which could make him tradeable. If not,
the Raiders have to decide by the third day of
two thousand nineteen waiver period to keep car and pay
him the guarantee nineteen point nine million. They're not paying him.
They're not paying him. Like I like Derek Carr, but
I think what he's suffering is the same the same

(19:05):
thing in a different fashion as Jay Cutler. When Jay
Cutler was with the Chicago Bears, everything you thought was
in fact true. They had to have him dress in
a different area instead of the locker room because he
lost the locker room. Guys didn't like him, didn't respect him.
There's a bunch of different things that you that we

(19:26):
as civilians don't even know about playing quarterback in the NFL,
And if you ask them, they're like, look, you have
to be accurate. If you're inaccurate. Brady Quinn, for example,
Brady Quinn is super super smart. Brady Quinn is a
freak athlete. He's built like a great god. But he

(19:47):
was he was just inaccurate with the with the Browns,
just inaccurate, and so because and so because of it,
you know, because of it, he couldn't sustain himself in
the league. You gotta be accurate. You also have to
have arm strength, right Josh Hypel remember won a national

(20:11):
championship and had an arm injury at Oklahoma, but he
had no arm strength. That that actually might be the
least important. But if you can't make throws outside the numbers,
and especially if you play in the winter, when you're
playing outdoors, arm strength can completely can undercut your career.
You have to have intelligence, and and not not just intelligence,

(20:35):
but you have to have verbal intelligence as well. Lamar
Jackson is like a non verbal guy. He just he
doesn't he's it's like he doesn't speak. He's not dumb,
he's just not a verbal guy. And in the NFL,
quarterbacks have to go through just the idea of calling

(20:56):
a play, of getting fluent in the language, of hauling
a true offensive play and changing on the fly. And
that's not the strength of Lamar Jackson. But the last
and sometimes the most important thing is those guys have
to have to believe in you. They just have to
believe in you. And if I was around the Chicago

(21:21):
Bears two weeks ago and they were like, look, and honestly,
the Dolphins were the same way Dolphins. Thing with Tannehill
is like, look Tannehill when he throws the ball deep
down the fields, just like when he's in college. Remember
he was a tight end that became a quarterback after
a couple of years in college. But if you watch
him in college the same as a pro and he
starts pushing the ball down the field, he gets inaccurate

(21:43):
and he gets picked off. That's what happens. But the
guys like him, and he's tough, and they believe that
he'll play through pain, and Mitch Rabinsky in comparison to
Jay Cutler, they like him. So even though he's inaccurate
and he hasn't played a ton of football, and he
will make some overthrow some some bad decisions, they can

(22:03):
live with it because they like him and they have
confidence in him. I'm not sure whether it's Derek Carr
being seen as too nice, Derek Carr being a guy
who may have whimpered, and like, look if you if
you think you dislocate your elbow or your shoulder, I mean,
there's a severe amount of pain that may bring any
man to tears, But the tears aren't really the issue.

(22:28):
The whimpering isn't really the issue. The fact is that
you go back. This is an issue that goes back
to last year. If guys don't like you, believe in
you want to kill for you think you're tough, it
becomes confirmation bias. Yeah, I thought he was soft. Guys
love Deshaun Watson. Like Deshaun Watson not a great quarterback

(22:51):
like Bill O'Brien didn't really want to draft him. He
wants a true drop back past. This is not a
is not a style quarterback that he really really likes.
But he's tough as hell. Like here's how tough Deshaun
Watson is. They were so concerned about his lung that
he took they They drove him on a bus to
the game, like a couple of thousand miles. You guys

(23:11):
know that story. That's what wins you in the locker
room is that Deshaun Watson can lead. They believe in him,
and there is nothing wrong with Derek Carr being a
good dad and being a religious guy, but he has
a reputation as being soft, getting rid of the ball early,

(23:35):
not being great at playing hurt. When they see you
crying on TV after hurting your elbow. It becomes confirmation
biased and you lose the locker room. People act like
like Gruden's the bad guy. Gruden has recognized the problem.

(23:56):
They're going through chapter eleven. He's getting rid of all
these parts and he would trade Derek Carr tomorrow if
he could. No one wants to absorb that last year
of the contract. I gotta fitted into into their salary cap.
All right, Jeff Passing, we caught up with him. We'll
we'll get to him in like a minute a half. First,
let me get you to Dan Buyer, Damn. What's going
on the world sports, Doug. It is Game one of

(24:17):
the World Series Tonight covered John Fox starts at seven
thirty Eastern time. Dodgers had red sox from Fenway. Clayton
Kershaw takes on Chris Sale tonight in the NBA Sixers,
guard Ben Simmons is doubtful to play against the Pistons
because of back spasms, while bollscard Chris Donne it's gonna
miss four to six weeks with the spring m c
l in his left knee and Tonight's discover card key matchup.
The Anaheim Ducks are at the Chicago Blackhawks at eight

(24:40):
thirty Eastern Top Speaking of matchups, become a new card
member and discovered card will match all the cash back
you've earned dollar for dollar at the end of your
first year. Learn more at discover dot com. Slash match
limitations apply. And in the NFL, Bronco's backup quarterback Chad
Kelly arrested on charges of criminal cross passing after allegedly
going into a stranger's home at one o'clock this morning
in Inglewood, Colorado. The police report states Kelly, who was

(25:03):
at a Halloween party hosted by Miller, entered the home
mumbling incoherently before he was chased out by a man
in the house. Police spotted Kelly a short time later
sitting in an SUV near the home. Giants Strittard Corner.
Eli Apple to the Saints for a fourth ROMP pick
next year, plus a seventh rounder and a hit for
the Eagles defense. Defensive and Derek Barnett gonna miss the

(25:24):
rest of the season and be placed on injured reserve
following shoulder surgery. Doug it's a big one. He had
two and a half sacks so far this year, seventeen
tackles uh and the strength of that team is, in
fact their defensive line. Let's get to Jeff Passon, who
um it was reported I think a week ago that
he's got a big new job ahead of him. I'm
not sure if I'm allowed to talk about or not.
As of now. His job title is MLB columnists for

(25:45):
Yahoo Sports and a good Win check out his Yahoo
Sports MLB podcast. Am I allowed to talk about the
new job or not yet? I'm I'm working for ya
Who Sports right now and I'm covering the World Series
and it's awesome. Gat Okay, cool, good, Hey, Hey dude.
I'm just all I'm hoping to do right now is
not mumble incoherently. If I can get through this segment

(26:06):
without doing that, I feel like it's a win forever.
So the story is, and I want to get to baseball.
On a second, The story is Chad Kelly swag. Kelly
goes to von Miller's like Halloween party, and he gets
gets so drunk they like, stumbles into some random Ladies
apartment and sits down her couch and starts mumbling incoherently.
She actually started hitting him, I think, with the vacuum

(26:27):
cleaner to try and get him out of the house
and then there's some dude there. I mean, he's lucky
nobody it's in Denver. He's lucky nobody shot him. I know.
I like, like, look, yes, hasn't gone into an apartment
in the middle of the night and gotten beaten by
a vacuum cleaner. I mean, I'm not going to sit
here and judge Jack Kelly for that. Good. I'm glad

(26:47):
we're in. I'm glad we have some of the same history.
Jeff Passon joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Um,
the Red Red Sox seemed completely and thoroughly dominant in
the regular their season, and yet you know, if the
home run call doesn't go their way, if ben A
Tendi doesn't make an unbelievable catch, some things don't go
their way, Houston may still be playing. There's also another

(27:11):
awesome team. How the Red Sox seems suddenly beatable in
the postseason. I'll tell you what though, Man, here's the thing.
After gave two of the Division series, I thought Yankees
are gonna win this series. It felt like they had
taken home field back from the Red Sox. You know,
they're going back to Yankee Stadium, which was as loud

(27:33):
as I had heard it going into Game three, and
you know, the Red Sox go and take two on
the road. Houston wins game one. I write a what
now in hindsight was exceedingly ill advised column saying that
the Astros look unbeatable at the point, and what happens.
Boston comes out wins the next game and then goes

(27:55):
and takes three in Houston. And let's not undersell just
how difficult what they've done is they've won every game
they've played on the road against two d win teams
this postseason so far, and and they're now facing a
team in the Dodgers that, while talented, I don't know
if there is talented at the Yankees are as talented

(28:17):
as the Astros. And I understand that talent does not
win ballgames in October in and of itself, but it
certainly puts you in a better position to do so.
And the Red Sox have just summarily dispatched two really
talented teams. So I think it's more the whims of
October Doug than it is that the Red Sox look beatable.

(28:38):
I think they're just playing great teams and and look,
they've won series three to one. In four to one, there, there, there,
There's seven and two this postseason against those excellent teams.
It's a very point Jef Passing joining us in the
Doug Gotlips Show on Fox Sports Radio. How do you
explain David Price being so dominant against that incredible lineup? Well, uh,

(28:59):
if you want to look at it through the granular
perspective of that particular game, his changeup was awesome, and
I I feel good as bad as I feel about that.
Astro's column following Game one in the first inning, when
he struck out George Springer, I believe on a changeup.
I tweeted something to the effect of that was a

(29:21):
vicious change up by David Price. If this is on tonight,
he's got a chance to be really good. And it
was on, and he was really good. And I wrote
a column that night that essentially said, for all we
want to to believe that there's some mystical thing going
on with David Price or Clayton Kershaw or Alex Rodriguez

(29:41):
or Barry Bonds or whoever it is, has been hard
and feathered with he can't play in the postseason tag.
It's not that they can't. It's that they haven't. And
those are two wildly different things. We we have to
understand that these are our professional athletes. They're where they are,

(30:02):
and they've achieved what they've achieved because they're they're talented
beyond our imagination and and because they've made adjustments. And that,
to me, is what happened with David Price here. David Price,
more than anyone, wanted to be good in the postseason
because he knows that it impugnes his reputation, everything reputation

(30:23):
he's worked really hard to build up every time he
goes out there and lays an egg. So I think
that David Price finally found a comfortable area in which
he can succeed in the postseason. Now, just as that
means it's not that he can't do it, he hasn't
done it, it also means that he might not do it.

(30:43):
It's not like it's not like a switch was turned
on all of a sudden that's gonna make him Madison
bum Garner in the postseason. I need to see his
next start, which happens to be tomorrow in Game two
of the World Series against a dangerous Los Angeles Dodgers
lineup that has a lot of right handed pop, whether
it's Justin Turner, Mannie Machado, you can go on and

(31:04):
on down the list they have, you know, David Freeze,
the guy who plays against left handed pictures. They have
a lot of right handed pop in that line up
that can really exploit Price if the changeup is not
as good as it was in the clincher. All right,
let's get tonight's game. Jeff Passing Yah who Sports joining
us on the Doug Otlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's start with Chris Sale, who when the velocity is

(31:24):
up is awesome, but then he had some shoulder issues,
and then he had some mysterious illness, and of course
then he he trolled us all with with this talk
of having a belly button piercing issue. Um, and and
now he's starting tonight. Have you figured out has anybody
figured out why the disparity in uh in the miles

(31:44):
per hour coming out of his arm? Uh? You know what?
I think that's the biggest question going into tonight was
Chris Sale sitting in his one start of the a
LCS through which he labored significantly because he had a
stomach bug or whatever it was. Or because his shoulders hurt.

(32:05):
I'm gonna listen, my eyes and thirty seven thousand other
people's are going to be directly on the ribbon scoreboard, uh,
tonight at Fenway Park upon that first pitch, because you
assume it's going to be a fastball to see how
hard Heath's throwing. And if it's Chris Slee, who's, we
got a chance for a hell of a game tonight.

(32:26):
If it's Chris Sale, who's, then the doctors have an
advantage to steal home field in the first game of
the World Series. And and Chris Hale, you got to
give him credit for what he did last time because
even though he didn't have his A, B, C or
D stuff. I mean, this was Chris Sale with no command,
uh and without velocity, and he's still got through four innings. Uh.

(32:48):
You need more than that if you're gonna win the
World Series. And I hate to put it on two
people who are starting pitchers, because the starting pitcher has
been just so minimized in baseball these days. But my
colleague Kim Brown yesterday said something and I agree with him.
I think whoever's better out of sailor Kershaw on the

(33:10):
series is who's gonna win the World Series. Wow, that's okay,
So let's talk about Kershaw couldn't have started worse against Milwaukee, right,
gets lit up, and then all of a sudden he
has incredible command of the curveball, and uh, you know,
instead of you know, the the Atlanta, it was more
it was work been like it was probably what he's
gonna have to be in the future. Get a lot

(33:31):
of groundballs and and be smart, keep the pitch count low.
But against Milwaukee a bunch of curveballs. And then he
comes in and how he closes closes out the series,
you know, like you keep going that Kershall well though,
and I feel like he's not a spring chicken. He's
had continuing back issues. What are expectations of him considering
how much he's thrown, even if he's thrown much better

(33:53):
the past two times out. The thing is, I think
the expectations of Clayton Kersh are always going to be
that the guy's a stud, because that's that's what Clayton
Kershaw has been throughout his career. He's the best picture
of this generation. He's still got, if not dominant stuff
like he did you know, mid the high nineties fastball
not there anymore. But he's got the slider, uh, And
he had more separation between the fastball and a slider

(34:15):
and his last start. And he's got the curveball, and
and he mixes in a change up every now and again.
It's a really good for pitch mix and and he
competes his ass off and that that, to me, is
is the Clayton Kershaw story right there. How does his
competitive nature work in a postseason game where you have
to have to above all else have composure and and

(34:39):
does that competitiveness get the best of him or does
it bring out the best in him? And I think
we're gonna see over the next week and a half
or so which Clayton Kershaw we're getting. I hope for
as as a baseball fan and as somebody who's a
fan of Clayton Kershaw as a human being, he really
is a wonderful guy. I hope he succeed and I

(35:00):
hope he finds the uh, the the joy and piece
that he has been looking for, because lord knows, he's
been looking for that for a long time. And the
Dodgers have won six straight division titles. Uh, this is
their second consecutive World Series. It has been thirty years
since that franchise has won a World Series and nobody,
nobody wants it more than he does. And then, of
course last year Kenlly Jansen became hittable in the World Series.

(35:23):
What about Craig Kimball as he finally figured out that
he was tipping pitches and that's why he was getting
lit up prior to that final final outing. Man, that
is such a great question, and I don't know what
the answer to that is. I I tend to say yes,
because his stuff looked a whole lot better out last time,
almost like he was more confident throwing it because he

(35:45):
knew that that the Astros hitters did not know what
was coming. But he's also had I think he's given
up five runs this postseason so far, and it's it's
not been a good look for him, man. I mean,
he's supposed to be one of the most dominant closers
in baseball and he's looked very the word I keep
going back to his wobbly. He has been wobbly the
entire postseason, and considering that the Red Sox still don't

(36:09):
have that eight inning bridge to get to him, wonder
how much Alex Cora is going to call upon him.
I assume it's going to be for for one inning
in games one through four, But once we get to five, six,
and seven, if the Red Sox are in it, Craig
Kimball is gonna need to get six outs only. Freddy
Gnz also used him a couple of years ago with
the Braves anyway against the against these exact same Dodgers.

(36:31):
Passing great stuff. Congrats in the new gig. We appreciate
you join us. Always a pleasure. Thanks for having me, buddy.

the right side of Giants Falcons last night. Because I
followed Dan Buyer on Twitter, I know that he was
gloating as I was gloating what he got first. D Doug,
The game today is rank Rank up, rank you some
World Series stuff in a bit. But you know we're

(37:40):
gonna have the college football Playoff rankings coming out next week.
But why not start a week early. Let's rank the
top four teams that you think should be in the
College Football Playoff if the playoffs started today. Alabama one?
Anybody any arguments? Anybody want to argue with me? Okay,
I'm gonna go Clemson to Clemson too. I'm gonna go

(38:03):
uh note Tree, Dame three, and I'm gonna go miss again.
It has been utterly and completely dominant of late, especially defensively,
for with Georgia and l s U right and Texas
and Oklahoma right on their heels. The interesting part, there's
just no conversation about a pack dwelf School, none whatso

(38:23):
and there shouldn't be there. I I disagree. I think
actually Oregan is good enough. Oregan just no show in
the first half against Wazoo. And I think they would
have gotten a pass for the Stanford thing because they
had the game one and then I fumbled. But they
did no show in the first half and lost up
in the plots. Rank the top three most important players
for the Boston Red Sox in the World Series. Well,

(38:45):
I'll I'm gonna go Chris Sale, I'm gonna go Craig Kimbrell,
and oh and I'm gonna go Mooky Betts. Interesting. I
was wondering where Kimball was going to be on this
list too. He might be one, but but but two
closing things out of that's the hardest three three outs
in big baseball is to close out these series, close

(39:07):
out these big games. I could go Jackie Bradley Junia.
My favorite name in the sport is Jackie Bradley Jr.
But I'm gonna go Mookie Betts. All right, let's rank
the three most important players for the Dodgers in the
World Series as it gets underway tonight. On five, Clayton
Kershaw who used to be who sometimes known as Clayton
Manning because of his lack of success at times in

(39:27):
the playoffs. I'm gonna also sit there and go Kenley
Jansen and uh then I'm going to go with uh
uh I Justin Turner. Ok, just Justin Turner. Most important,
like PWEG is pwe can can win a series and
lose the series with one swinging the bat or one

(39:48):
terrible decision in the base pass. But Justin Turner has
to hit in order for the Dodgers to win. You know.
Coming off of that NLCS, the one thing that I
don't think many people talked about was really how good
Walker Bueller was learn that game. He gave up the
whole run to uh, to yell, let's to start the game.
But for a guy that young and that big of
a spot, yeah, I thought maybe Walker Bueller could. He'll start,

(40:10):
He'll start Game seven if they get to a game, yes, yes,
and that that could prove important as well. Okay, Doug
Red Sox Dodgers tonight, they're gonna look good on the field.
Let's rank the best uniforms in baseball. Red Sox and
Dodgers have got to be at least part of the conversation.
Let's let's start five. Let's go five to one. Okay,
because the top one I think you could have Yankees,

(40:32):
you can have Cubs, you can have Dodgers, Red Sox
could be a bunch of one. Well, there's the there's
the four. Who's the fifth, the who's the fifth? I
don't like the team, but I like the look of
the St. Louis Cardinals. I've always you know, even the
stl on the cap. I think it's very sharp. All Right,
we'll go Cards five. Okay, uh, we'll go We'll go

(40:56):
Cubs for We'll go Dodgers, three socks, Red Sox too. Yankees?
What is there a big gap between Yankees and everyone else? Yes,
because even though the Cubs wear pin stripes, right, other
teams were pin stripes. When you think of pin stripes,
you think of the Yankees. And I think their grays

(41:19):
are just as uh as well known as their whites are.
But yes, the pin stripes are the Yankees. And no
names on the back. No names, This is game time
on the Duck Gotli Show. It's funny. No names in
college basketball usually mean mid major. I'll never forget um

(41:39):
A buddy mind. Tommy Warner, who was a walk on,
got a scholarship at Oaklhoma State. He had no number,
no name on the back of a shooting shirt. And
we're playing in Kansas State. When year they're going no number,
no name, must have no game. No number, no name,
must have no game. Oh, good times, good times. The
Lakers are apparently trusting the process. But what exactly is there?

(42:00):
Assess We'll discuss next on The Doug Gotlip Show. Be
sure to catch live editions of The Doug got Leap
Show weekdays at noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app. What Up
Doug gott Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. M so many

(42:25):
things to get to. We got Major League Baseball sale
versus Kershaw at Fens tonight. That should be great On Fox.
The Atlanta Falcons get another win over another bad team.
I don't know if you saw, but Matt Ryan had
eighteen consaistive completions. None of them were more than like

(42:47):
five yards down the field. It was it was, it
was checked down, Charlie. On the other hand, part of
it was the Giants were letting them have some of
those crossing routes and some of those checkdowns, they were
taking away everything. Over the top Giants, by the way,
reacted waving the I flag Eli Apple and Eli Apple's
mother sent packing to New Orleans. I actually don't think
that's a bad thing for Eli Apple, right, you get

(43:09):
out of the media hotbed where his mom would become
part of kind of the story. And then he didn't
get along with others in the locker room, and he
sent him to one of the best teams in the NFL,
one that needs defensive backfield help. And all they had
to give up was a fourth and the seventh to
get him. So we'll continue to react there. Um, it

(43:29):
appears that everything everyone is available in Oakland and some
other places get a reaction to the Marii Cooper trade.
And we'll talk a little bit about the Steelers upcoming. Plus,
Daniel Jeremiah joins us in fifteen minutes on the show
works for the NFL Network, covers the Chargers all ask

(43:49):
him about the sudden use of analytics and whether or
not it works as much as the analytics say that
it works. Well, let's get to last night in the
city that city of Los Angeles, Lakers had a golden
opportunity to get their first win of the year, they

(44:11):
took on the San Antonio Spurs. Remember, the Spurs lost
the jan D Murray there starting point guard before the
year began to a tourn acl So even though the
Lakers didn't have Rondo and didn't have Brandon Ingram due
the suspension from the fight the other day against the Rockets,
the Spurs are without their starting point guard and their
first round pick, who also is out with injury, also

(44:32):
could play point for them, but they did have Patty Mills,
Marco Bellonelli, Brent Forbes, Pau Gasol, and the Marcus Aldrich
was an absolute monster last night and between the Lakers
inability to contain La Marcus Aldrich. If you didn't see it,
JaVale McGhee fouled out Zoobos. Did he foul out or

(44:55):
did he just get closed? You got like five fouls.
He was like a foul minute guy. They had to
turn to Jonathan and Williams of course played in Missouri
and at Glenzaga, who's really like a face up four
to play center, and he probably did the best job
of anybody on him. They were down six latent regulation
and the Spurs had flashbacks to that heat series with

(45:16):
Lebron where Lebron find found Kyle Kuzma for three, and
then after he got a rebound, Lebron James seemed to
want to call time out, didn't get the time out,
had got poked in the eyes, stopped, and for whatever reason,
Spurs chose to not really guard him from about twenties
seven feet out, could have double teamed, could have fouled
him up three, they didn't. He knocked out three, sent

(45:39):
to overtime, and overtime, they had a big lead, eight
point lead, about a minute to go, up four with
twenty seconds to go and Lebron loses Rooty Gay gives
who makes it three. Then Lebron misses two free throws,
Spurs called time out on a play Patty Mills it's
a jump shot. Lakers called time out. Run a play

(46:00):
for ISO for Lebron. He goes one on one and
mrs and the Lakers fall to oh and three on
this season. Here's Lebron after the game. I know when
I got myself into some process, I get it. Man,
we'll be fine. So I didn't come here and thinking
we were gonna be you know, blaze of storms you know,
run out the gate. That's the process. And I understand thatself.
You know, the game is, you know, frustrating not to

(46:21):
get to win. But I'll showered and I'm I'm good enough.
I'm showered and I'm good. Thanks for the update, Broun.
Appreciate that. Oh he's showered, Guys, he's showered, and he's good.
Let's start with the mis free throws. Now, he did
not choke them, all right. You choke a free throw,

(46:42):
it's when it's super super short or super super long
or just those those went it was the first one
was short, but it went around. Now, the second one
was long, but it went around. Now. But the fact
is that you're up one, your man hits the three
to cut you're up for your man hits a three
to cut it to one. You go ball, They throw

(47:02):
you the ball. You hold the ball to get foul. Now,
the rule in basketball is like, listen, you could go
and run over and call for the ball, but you
gotta make it. But you gotta make at least one
at of to give me one out of two. And
I don't I didn't. I don't actually believe that there's

(47:25):
any Laker fan out there. That wasn't fired up about
Lebron playing for them. It is a weird thing too.
You have Kobe, and you always thought that Kobe and Lebron,
will they ever meet in the NBA Finals, and it
never happened. We just never got that. Um, we didn't
get that. So it is weird to have Lebron now

(47:46):
wearing a Laker uniform. And when you were team Kobe,
you're like, wait, he's on our team now, that's so strange.
On the other hand, they've gone through five years of
the worst year five year stretch in the Laker history,
so hey, just give me a reason to care about
the Lakers anymore. I'm not even a Laker fan. I'm
fired up. I'm watched every dame. Dude. I switched it

(48:07):
from I switched my carrier to the system that covers that,
so I can watch every Laker game now, actually have
two carriers, drying. My wife like we're paying what for television?
You know? Kids watching Netflix and like, hey, we're watching
the satellite TV and cable TV, watching both both. Bo

(48:29):
f F So, um, you can call for the ball,
but you gotta make it. And while I think most
Laker fans were fired up, and I don't believe that
most Laker fans are still on team Kobe. You missed
two free throws like that, and it does bring the

(48:50):
Kobe Bryant ever missed two free throws when he called
for the ball at the end of the game. Has
that ever happened. I'm not even gonna get into Michael Jordan'
who he'd missed free throw, But you have ms two
free throws that could ice the game or at least
put you up three where you're gonna foul right away
and it kind of ice is a game. And then
missed the game winner after giving up the game, you know,

(49:11):
a game cutting three? Oh oh, so what's the process? Trust? Trust?
I'm I'm trusting the process. Every process is different. I
don't believe that he walked in thinking he'd have a
championship team. And he has kind of struggled out of
the gate if you go back to when he was

(49:32):
in Cleveland, when he was in Miami even But here's
where it's different. Did they struggle out of the gate
in Miami and he struggled to relate to Eric Spoelstra, Yes,
but you know what he had. He had Dwyane Wade,
and he had Chris Bosh. And as much as it
was hard, Dwyane Wade won the ball. He won the ball.
Chris Bosh won the ball. You're all used to be

(49:53):
in the Star and the guy and who gets the ball.
That's hard to kind of figure out, but you at
some point you got better players, you win games. He
doesn't have a Cris Bosh. He doesn't have a Dwayne
Wade on this team. And when he went to the
Miami Heat his first year, he's twenty six years old.

(50:17):
So Lebron James will say the hell with it, I'm
just gonna win this game. And that's how they kept
their heads above water when they were struggling to kind
of figure it out. When he went to Cleveland, where
they a dysfunctional mess before he got there. Yes, they
were tanking before he got there. That's why they're so
bad record wise. But he had Kevin Love and he
had Kyrie Irving and he was only thirty years old.

(50:40):
Now he's thirty four years old. He's playing a different style.
They're playing faster than he's ever played. He's playing without
the basketball most of the game, more so than he's
ever played. And they don't have anybody else in the team.
Then go like Lebron, you rest, I'll win this, or
you rest and I'll carry it. They don't have that.

(51:03):
Kuzma scores a lot of points, but it's not like
you're gonna throw the ball Kyle Kuzman and go win.
It's the game, big boy, not I gonna throw the
ball Josh Hard and go win us a big game,
big boy. They have zero low post scoring, none, and
you can sit here and go analytics tell us the
only low post scorer they have is Lebron James and
that has always been the weakest part of his game.

(51:25):
And then the idea of playing fast is brilliant because
it's a team that has really good depth, right Like,
I don't think Lan Stevenson as great as a starter,
but if he's your ninth best guy, pre good team,
frea good team. But when you play fast and then
at the end of the game, you slow down to

(51:46):
get Lebron the basketball. He's a little bit tired, he's
a little bit older, and he's out of rhythm because
he hasn't played for this is not how he plays.
What's the oldest cliche you can think of in terms
of having an animal. I can't teach an old dog
new tricks at the cliche, but you know what, you

(52:08):
can't really teach an old dog new tricks. You get
a puppy, you know you can teach it anything you want,
anything you want, But you adopt a dog at like
twelve years old or thirteen years old, it's not like
you're like, you know what, and now I'm going to
teach the dog to roll over. Now I'm going to
teach the dog to properly behave on Alleiti like those

(52:29):
habits are just ingrained. And when you played incredible basketball
for fifteen years in the NBA, and now you're gonna go, hey,
you know the way you played, Let's play a tinge
faster on every possession. Let's play without the basketball. And
until last night he didn't play a lot of point guard.
Last night he did, so I do think there's a

(52:54):
process that they eventually will get another star player or two.
The only X nation for signing k CP to one
year deal is somebody's gonna want to trade for that
expiring deal here before the trade deadline. And I know
he's a rich Paul client, and maybe it makes them
happy to make the Lebron James, but he didn't fit there.

(53:16):
But he doesn't have anybody else to help carry the load.
There is no low post scoring zero, which again the
analytics will tell you like, don't throw in the low post.
If you watch the game last night LaMarcus Aldridge, they
they fed him till he burped, fed until he burped.
And what's it? What allows you to do while you

(53:37):
play from the post, and you could get score in there.
One you can get foul trouble on the other team's
big guy, their team's best big guys too. Allows everybody
else to kind of catch their breath. You get to
the foul line, allows you to catch your breath, whereas
you're just running up and down shooting threes and trying
to play transition. That's a hard way to live. There
is a reason that no one's played that way success

(54:00):
believe in the NBA over the last twenty five years.
So he may believe and be trusting in the process,
and he may not be freaking out. But if you
really have balance and look at it, I think Lebron
James is out a rhythm because he's not used to
playing at this tempo. I don't think he has nearly

(54:20):
the talent around him in terms of one or two
guys that can carry the load offensively if he's not
hitting his shots. And Lebron James is thirty four, he's
not the same as he was at thirty or at
twenty six, and so and oh, and I forgot to
mention the other part. The Western Conference is way more difficult. Like,

(54:41):
you can tell me all you want about man, it
was awesome that all the eight straight NBA finals in
the Eastern Conference, But was it was it? He had
three of the best players in the conference that didn't
have any sort of other collection of talent to compete
with him. Portland's Portland's You know, Portland is a playoff team.

(55:06):
The Spurs are a low level, low end playoff team.
The Rockets are a high end playoff team. And they're
own three three legitimate teams come in and beat you
twice in your own building. And I'm not saying they're
not competitive and they didn't play hard, and they're not
better than they were last year. But this process is

(55:27):
different than it was in Miami than it was in Cleveland.

and the Chargers Broadcast Network, DJ. You were there. You
know how exhausting that trip is, in addition to the
actual game in which the Chargers defense was on the
field for thirty six minutes. If you're Mike Brable, don't

(56:33):
you kick the extra point and play for overtime knowing
the other team is dead on their feet? Well? I
think you look at a couple of different things. First
of all, me and Matt, Uh, you know, we're calling
the game, and we had heard. We knew that if
we did not get the airplane out by a certain time,
we would not be able to get into l a X.
And we're gonna be stu if the game went to overtime,

(56:55):
I know the Charges We're gonna be stuck in London

maybe Brabel has the same setup, and he's like, you
know what, we're winning this thing. We're spend another night here.
We're go ahead and try and win this thing. Get
out of here. But in all seriousness, I think they
thought they had the Chargers defense so on their heels
and so tired that he thought they could squeeze out,
you know, one play for a couple of yards and

(57:17):
and I don't think he wanted to kick off and
put the ball in Phillip's hands with a chance for
him to go down there and end it. So I
think that he thought that was his best chance to
win the football game. I didn't I didn't hate the decision.
I just didn't love really the play call that they
went with. All right, What about the Chargers. They didn't
have Melvin Gordon, they didn't have without a couple of starters,
and they're gonna get Joey Bosa back. I know the
record is five and two, but um, you know they

(57:39):
they've let San Francisco hang around with a backup quarterback.
They let the Titans hang around. How good are the
Chargers as as they sit there in five and two
and still most of America doesn't believe in them. Well, look, defensively,
you're holding teams down the last couple of weeks. I've
kept the score down. They've played good team defense. They've
gotten better, even though they gave up a bunch of yardage.

(58:01):
They've done a nice job when they've got down in
the red zone, obviously culminating with that a two point
stop there. But they had an interception where Ingram popped
the ball up in the air in Dentel Parment picked
it off down there in the red zone earlier. So
they're playing good red zone defense. You mentioned they get
their best defensive player back, and I mean, look, people
want to bang on them for who if they beat
I don't know, man, I see teams. You know, Minnesota

(58:24):
is a really talented team and they lose to the
Buffalo Bills. Like there's something to be said for just
taking care of business. When you've got teams you should beat,
you do it. And you also find ways to win
when you're not at your best. They weren't at their best.
Obviously a couple of key guys out, but they weren't
at their best against Tennessee. Marcus Mariota probably played one
of his three or four best games of his entire career,

(58:45):
and you found a way to win the game. I
think that's a sign him a good team in my opinion.
What about Marcus Mariota, Uh, what's now that you've seen
him in person, You've prepped for him watching tape, I'm
sure on the plane to London. What's your take on Mariota? Well,
I you know, if he didn't he didn't put the
ball in the air very far down the field, and
they had a couple of drops in that game that

(59:05):
were big. But for the most part, I mean he's
throwing stop routes over the ball to the tight end,
getting the ball to the Backstan Lewis made a lot
of things happen. There's not much vertical presence to that
passing game. Um, so you know, if he played really well,
they didn't. They scored nineteen points. So, um. You know,
I don't think he's a top ten quarterback in the NFL.

(59:25):
I don't think I personally don't think he's ever going
to be a top ten quarterback in the NFL, which
means you better be darned good everywhere else if you're
gonna win really big and right now they're not quite there.
How did how do we miss on him? I mean
he was he was a can't miss prospect? Is he
because of how great a guy he is? I mean
so many people are like, well, look, I know he
plays in Chip Kelly system, but he's really much better.

(59:45):
He's a much better athlete than you think. He's much
better in the pocket than you think. How how do
we miss on him? Yeah? I mean, look, I didn't
have him, as you know, I had Jameis Winston over him,
and I had a good grade on Marcus Mariott. I
don't know that had an enormous grade on him. But
still I've been a little bit disappointing. I think, to me,
I wish he would embrace more running around. He ran

(01:00:06):
around a little bit more in that game and just
do it cautiously, protect yourself, slide it down, what have you.
But he he, like a lot of guys who's athletic,
just came to the conclusion like I am going to
win from the pocket. And he's not ready to win
from the pocket right now, that's still a ways off.
And when he's reluctant to run, you lose that element
and then what are you left with? So Uh, to me,

(01:00:27):
I wish he would be a little more open to
move around a little bit more than he is right now.
What about Jamis Winston? Uh, they get a win um yea,
as Jamis Winston regained control of that position in Tampa. Yeah,
I mean I think he's and I wouldn't say it's
it's settled, but I think there are some good signs.
Even when he's turned the ball over a little bit.

(01:00:47):
He's he's gonna play aggressive, he's gonna get chunk plays. Um,
you see him, you know, reading the whole field, you know,
working through progressions. I'm still optimistic that Jamis can be something. Uh,
he's he's he's not a finished product. He's not there
right now. But to me, when you just compare those
two guys from the same draft class. Um, I still
think there's a much more upside there with Jamis. Let's

(01:01:09):
let's get to last night. The use of analytics. Um,
you Pat Shermer's like, look, when you're down fourteen, if
you go for two, an increase your percentage of winning
by by I do think it takes some of the
human element out of it, right, Like he has an
immobile quarterback. He also they are not great in the
red zone. And oh yeah, by the way, uh, if

(01:01:31):
you don't get it, going for two puts a tremendous
amount of pressure on you to to get that next
two point conversion. If you do get it and you
don't come away with the same like you score a touchdown,
you cut it to seven, you feel a little bit
better than you score a touchdown and you cut it
to six and you go for two and you miss it,
you don't feel as good just kicking off and get
ready defensively. There's a little bit of a human element

(01:01:53):
that's missing from from analytics in terms of context. Is
that a fair take? Yeah, I mean, I think emotion
that's the kind of the point of analytics is to
take emotion away. Um, but I think there is value
in some emotion. Like you just said, it's a little
deflating when you don't finish it off with it with
the extra try. You know. So, um, like there's people

(01:02:13):
a lot smarter than me that, like you said, they
could point the percentages and all that. Um, I don't know, Doug.
I kind of I kind of say, look, score touch,
don't kick their point. I want to just prolong the
game as long as I can, and I know I
want to be aggressive, but it just I don't know,
it just doesn't it's just kind of odd to me.
I understand it. I understand the percentages. I understand why
you do that to me. I just I don't know.

(01:02:35):
It's not my it's not my deal. I think it's
one of those things. It's like a guy using big word.
It's like people who use big words. There's a person
on TV. I won't I won't, I won't use it.
I won't use his name, Okay, but every third sentence
he used the word, to which I'm like, I don't
know what that word means. And if he talks about sports,
and it's like, look, I understand that you're intelligent. I

(01:02:55):
get it. You're righter than me. Um, but you don't
have to you don't have to use big words all
the time. That's if it's like, look, we're smart, we
have analytics department. I want to show you how smart
we are just for the sake of showing you how
smart we are when you don't need to do it. Yeah,
I mean, I don't know if it's an egregious mistake,
but this is really kind of a superfluous conversation. Daniel

(01:03:17):
Jeremiah joining us that app state education on full display.
All right, the the Raiders. The Raider's fire sale continues.
But I actually like this one. I actually really like.
Tell me why I like it. I just to me,
I I studied, uh, you know, Marie Cooper getting ready

(01:03:40):
for when they played the Chargers, and I did not
see the same juice that I saw when he was
coming out of Alabama and when he was a little
bit younger in the league his first two years. Um.
And and look, you can look at the numbers over
the last two years, he's in like the forty five
to fifty range amongst receivers and a lot of categories. Um,
he has a ton of drops. And uh, you know,

(01:04:00):
I don't know. I think you just kind of assumed
that this is the first round pick, the high first
round pick who had a couple of good years. You're
gonna see that same player re emerge. And I don't
know that's gonna happen. Um, you know, but you always there.
People are gonna be married to their college grades and
they're gonna remember what they saw. We've seen it with
Sammy Watkins now twice, um, where teams have gone all
in on him based off what they were hoping he

(01:04:21):
was gonna be and what they you know, and thought
he was coming out. Um. I feel a little bit
the same way with this one. I don't know, you know,
maybe it's just a change of scenery and it will
help him. I just don't I haven't seen the burst,
and I don't know that all of a sudden you
just get that back, snap your fingers and you see
that again. Yeah, and okay, So now what do you
do with Derek Carr? I mean, Car's got twenty five
million dollar cap hit. I just people like, well, you

(01:04:44):
gotta trade derekik who's gonna take on that cat number
for the remainder of the season. Even if you get
out of it at the end of this season. Yeah,
I mean, look, you know what, like they say, it
only takes one right, Um, we just have one one
team fall in love with you. And we can point
through Sam Bradford's career to say, maybe you won't see
it coming, maybe I won't see it coming, but there's

(01:05:04):
somebody out there that that's that's willing to do it. Um.
So yeah, who knows. It definitely is a it's a
tear down job at this point in time. Uh. Now,
it's up to Oakland to make this all work out.
They've got a hit. And I was talking to Bucky
about it today and I said, if somehow they end
up coming out of this thing with with bosa Um
to kind of replace Mac, which will be a lot
cheaper version in a in a really dominant player, and

(01:05:27):
they can you know fit, Yeah, and we'll see you.
Who knows what Herbert's gonna do, But if they can,
if they can get the quarterback right, the pass rusher right,
then maybe we'll all owe you know, John Gruen an
apology for what's going on right now. But that's gonna
be the big challenge of the Raiders. Can they get
these picks right? Dania Jeremiah joining us in the Doug
Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Tradio. What about the Cowboys?
They are so needy for a wide receivers that they're

(01:05:48):
willing to go get a guy who seems to have
lost and burst and is gonna make thirteen million change
next year guarantee. The probably had to rework that deal
and extending long term. Uh is he just what the doctor?
Does he fit their offensive ineptitude? Well? I do think
talent wise, even with not seeing the same guy as
he was earning his career, I still think talent wise,

(01:06:08):
he'll be their most talented wide receiver. Um. So they've
they've added somebody that can upgrade what they currently have. UM.
You know, now, what was the price too steep? I
tend to think it was. But they've got better and
that's the goal. To get better in an NFC East
that right now is pretty darn watered down and there
for the taking. Maybe they think they can go steal

(01:06:28):
the division. That's the voice of Daniel Jeremiah covers the
Chargers for their network and of course works on the
NFL Network and has a podcast, Moved the Sticks. Bucky
is Bucky Brooks who guest hosted for me. You should
download that podcast. It's it's outstanding. Let's let's go around
the league a little bit here. Um, I don't think
Srabinsky has it. They love him in Chicago, but he

(01:06:52):
he can be so inaccurate and everything is pre snap read.
Are are you willing to call it or is there
still time to fix that thing? I think there's still time.
He hasn't played a ton, you know, so there's still
some growth and development now. To be honestly, I'd had
a chance to watch that tape of that game this
past weekend, so I can't really comment on that one,

(01:07:13):
but just what I've seen from him this year, Um, yeah,
I mean I think he's got a good coordinator there
for what his skill set is. I think Maggie's a
good fit for him, being able to get him a
lot of those quick hitters and uh. And hopefully he'll
continue to grow and develop and be able to play
the position, you know, the way some of the big
time guys do. But he's not. He's not ready to
do that at this point in time. Uh. And they're
finding a way to score some points and move to football.

(01:07:34):
Even though you've got a little bit of limitation. There
are you willing to say that Andrew Luck is fully back.
I don't know that he's fully back to, you know,
throwing the ball with as much power as he did before,
but I think he's fully back in terms of being
able to play winning football and uh and do everything
you need to do to win games. And I think

(01:07:55):
in some ways it might help him a little bit
to to kind of pull back a little bit of
his offense. You always want a quarterack to be confident.
There's the time you'd be a little bit too confident.
He's turned the ball over a lot in his career,
forced a lot of throws, and I think maybe in
the back of your mind thinking, you know, I don't
think I can jam that ball in there. Maybe it's
not a bad thing. I mean, I get to watch
Philip Rivers every week, and Philip has a good arm.

(01:08:18):
He used to have a great arm. He has a
good arm, but he he's he's pretty dart smart now.
He doesn't put the ball in jeopardy like he did
when he was younger. And I think you see a
little bit of that same thing with Andrew Luck. Derek
Barnett got shoulder surgery today, he's out for the year.
For the Philadelphia Eagle, strength of that team, it's not
just wins, but it's that defensive line. How much does
that hurt the defensive line. Yeah, it's good. I mean

(01:08:39):
he's a really good player. If they have a lot
of depth, they have guys there. Um, I think getting
Timmy Journing and back will help them too. But they
you know, that's that's a tough one just because they're
able to roll four ends through keep all those guys
fresh and uh and you definitely need that when you
get into the postseason. As you saw last year, he
scooped up the fumble there to help secure a Super Bowl. So, yeah,
it's a big loss. They've got some depth, but they'll

(01:09:01):
feel that one no doubt. Kansas City continues to just
pummel teams now public, especially at home. Granted, the Bengal
is not good in in prime time. Um, look, I
I feel like we've seen this before. I know it's
different because of Mahomes's armed talent, but we've seen dominant
regular seasons. Is this is this different than years in

(01:09:22):
the past with Kansas City? Well, I mean, gosh, you
gotta have you gotta have some firepower to keep up
with them, and you better play great red zone defense
and they'll just running right out at the gym. I
you know who, who would you compare this to? Is
this offense? Like if you're gonna do a basketball comparison,
is this It feels a little bit like UNLV back

(01:09:43):
in the day, Like you just kind of look up
and you're like, holy cred where the game's over? Like
this thing is over. Um, You've got to find a
way to get some stops on them. It's as explosive
a group as I've seen. You know what reminds me
of honestly, it reminds me of the undefeated year that
the Patriots had um because if you remember their offense,
the first half of their the season, their offense was ridiculous,

(01:10:07):
and then slowly but surely, and then of course last
game of season the Giants nearly beat them, and the
Giants did beat them in superl and the Ravens nearly
beat him as well, and and like, look, this is
the team I know they lost to the Patriots, and
they lost the Patriots because the Patriots did a good
job to keep Mahomes off the field by running the
football right, and that's you gotta hit him with those
body shots, but you gotta get first downs as well.

(01:10:27):
You can't have empty possessions. And to me, there's still
Mahomes has played great. Take nothing away from him, but
there's still those teams with a dominant front, and we'll
get to see it in Mexico City, you know, we'll
see what Aaron Donald and company when they get him
off the spot, hit him a little bit if if
he's gonna turn the ball over. So that's that. That's
what the Giants team you were just talking about did

(01:10:49):
to Tom Brady. Inside pressure, inside pressure will destroy any offense.
So that to me is something to keep an eye on.
Are the Saints for real really good? You know, they're
still trying to find themselves, I think defensively, but the
personnel is good. So to me, you can look at
the results, you can look at the personnel, and to me,
I liked the personnel that they have. Andrew still playing

(01:11:10):
at a really high level. This will be a heck
of a challenge for him this week though, UH Minnesota's
playing pretty good defensively, so we'll know a lot more
about both those teams next week. Great stuff as always
welcome back to the States. Was it was it fun?
Was a London thing fun? Or was it just a
long er? Uh? It was. I had a great time.
It's a beautiful city. It'd never been before. When and
saw a soccer match over there, which was that was

(01:11:33):
a great experience. I never have understood, Doug the soccer thing.
I've never got. White people are so into it. And
then when you go over there and see Chelsea and
Man United play and you get it in that atmosphere,
I was like, Okay, this is the first time I
get it. So now are you gonna be waking up
and tweeting it like on Sunday mornings like all these
other guys that are into soccer. I'm you can start

(01:11:54):
calling it a pitch on me? Are you no? I
will give you this one quick story though, one Quiesstry
before you know, you gotta run um the headlines when
you get over there. You know, you get ESPN dot com.
It's I's UK, it's the UK version, so it's their headlines,
not the American headlines. So when the fight with the
Lakers happened, right, uh, you know, Rondo, Chris Paul, the
whole thing, the headline on ESPN London was Lebron James

(01:12:16):
helps break up fight. That was the headline for the
entire event. It was like, it's beautiful. They are starstruck
man awesome, welcome back, thanks for joining us. Thanks. That's
Daniel Jeremiah from the NFL Network. Let's get you to
Dan Buyer find out what else is going on. If
any more Raider has been traded. No, not yet, but
we do have news from the World Series. Batting practice

(01:12:38):
canceled because of rain at Fenway Park. Yes, no BP
today for Game one of the World Series, but the
rain expected to go away by the time the first
pitch is thrown. Scheduled eight or nine Eastern time covered
John Fox begins at seven thirty Eastern. Dodgers and Red
Sox from Boston. Clinton Kershaw going up against Chris Sale.

(01:12:59):
They're starting a lot of have been announced, Dodgers going
heavy with right handed bats. That includes Brian does you're
batting leadoff and playing second? David Freeze is gonna play
first base in bat third. Matt Campbell serves the Dodgers
d H four Game one tonight in the NFL, and
arbitrator has denied a grievance against the Bengals by Panthers
safety Eric Read. This according to the NFL Network. The

(01:13:20):
NFL p A filed the grievance on behalf of Read
after claiming the Bengals asked him if he would continue
to kneel for the anthem if he signed with the team.
The arbitrator ruled that the Bengals had a right to
ask the question. Bronco's backup quarterback Chad Kelly arrested on
charges of criminal trespassing this morning after allegedly going into
a stranger's home in Inglewood, Colorado. The New York Giants

(01:13:40):
traded corner Eli Apple to the Saints for a fourth
round pick next year and a seventh rounder and twenty
As you mentioned with Daniel Jeremiah Eagles defensive and Derek
Barnett's gonna miss the rest of the season following shoulder surgery.
No Ben Simmons tonight against the Pistons, likely for the
seventy sixers that is likely to miss the game. Let

Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. When did you

(01:15:11):
become aware of Tyler Trent, the cancer patient who has
become such an nationally inspirational story About midway through the
year last year, before the Michigan game. As I was
walking from office down to I think the training table
meal he was camping out the night before to get
in the game first. And met him there he and

(01:15:31):
uh we talked. I really didn't know his whole situation,
but he just had a great energy about him, a
great smile, He a lot of pride in the program.
What's it like for this story to provide perspective for
everyone involved? The great thing about for due is, uh,
you know, we're not a football program in the limelight
right now. Before this game, I think we have a
bunch of guys do things for the right reason. Uh.

(01:15:54):
You know, we tried to make the game fun and
for our players to play in and for fans to watch,
to find a guy like this who's given us inspiration,
and for us to kind of take him in and
for him to respond in the way he has. You know,
while it's important to win football games, we all try
to give him more hope and uh, through our love
and support of him is really something that means a lot.

(01:16:17):
And I know when our players went down to visit
him in his house. When they came back, they said
it meant more to them that they even did to
him and they got a lot out of it. If

bring back something we saw on Fox Sports one Fox
Sports Radio. We call it calling coward to the chance
to react to the Raiders Uh Cowboys trade which A

(01:17:01):
Marii Cooper was traded from the Raiders for a first
round pick in next year's NFL Draft. Here's what he
had to say. Aggressive his winning in sports. The Golden
State Warriors were good and had a title. They went
out and recruited Kevin Durant. The Giants couldn't make a
move on Eli. How they do on one in six?
Be aggressive yesterday. The Dallas Cowboys, and this is their

(01:17:23):
brand through the years, were aggressive and they traded a
number one pick for wide receiver A Marii Cooper. Now,
I would prefer they give away a three a third
round pick, but that's not gonna happen because other teams
offered a second I would really prefer they offered a
second round pick, but they offered a first round pick.
Because other teams offered a second and they're aggressive, Try

(01:17:46):
gave up a little more than I would want to.
You have to find out in the next ten games
if you're gonna pay Dak Prescott or not. And now
with a Marie Cooper, you're gonna have an elite running back,
an elite left tackle, and above average offense line, offensive coaches,
a playmaking perimeter player. Okay, if he can't get two

(01:18:06):
D seventy five yards, then you've answered the big question,
he's not the guy. Look, all of that is fair.
It should be pointed out though, that a huge part
of the deal, A big reason that his value was
hard uh to measure for these other teams is he's
guaranteed to make over thirteen million dollars next season. And

(01:18:28):
so with that in mind, now the sudden to Marii Cooper,
you can pay him thirteen are there's a lot a
lot of money, and then are you gonna renegotiate a
long term deal? Or are you just gonna let it
sit there? So it wasn't just a first round pick.
It's a first round pick and a hefty salary that
spikes next year. And if that's what it's gonna take
to find out if Dak Prescott can play, what do

(01:18:50):
you do with Dak Prescott can't play? Because you know
where you find a quarterback, don't you in the first
round the NFL draft? Oops? Uh? That because problematically you
don't have first round pick. The reason why you got
Dak where you where you got him? That doesn't usually happen.
That's the exception that the rule, and it's probably the

(01:19:12):
reason that Dak hasn't performed as well as many people
thought he could perform. Why was he a fourth round pick? Well,
because he's not that accurate, because not that good, doesn't
that great harm. He's a good athlete, not a freak athlete.
He's a good thrower, not a great thrower. He's a
good leader, not a great leader. He's fine, But he's
a fourth round pick. Maybe he dropped a little bit
because the d U I, but even that would have

(01:19:33):
been a third round pick. And that's what he's playing like,
um I do think the other part to it, which
I do. I disagree with this, the idea that aggressive wins.
It doesn't always win. It depends. It's like one of
those would you trade Amari Cooper it depends. Would you
trade Khalil Mack? It depends. Would you be aggressive? It depends.

(01:19:57):
It depends. I would not have on for it if
I was Mike Vrabel, I would not have gone forward.
If I was Frank Reich on my own forty three
yard line where you are on the field. And oh yeah,
by the way, if you're the Raiders and you're saying,
why aren't the Raiders being aggressive? They are. They're aggressively
getting rid of players in order to obtain younger, less

(01:20:17):
expensive assets for the long term future. They weren't handed
a blank slate. He was handed a crumby franchise that
had been crummy for fifteen years with one year as
an exception. And that's what the fox said. Um. This
from Patricia Training, who covers the New York Giants for

(01:20:42):
a living for the Athletic. After the Eli Apple trade,
if you're just joining us, Eli Apple, former first round
pick of the Giants, was traded away to the New
Orleans Saints Railer today for a fourth and a seventh
round pick after Eli Apple was traded. Pat Shermer says
the Giants aren't throwing in the towel. It will give
an opportunity for younger players to play moving forward, which

(01:21:03):
is the exact same thing. No, no, no, this is
the NBA. Guys do this all the time. We're not tanking.
We're just playing our younger players and that causes us
to lose more. That's not tanking. Do you know why
you can't say that we're trying to lose? Because the
first rule of tank club is ramos, don't talk about

(01:21:25):
tank club. The second rule of tank club music is
don't talk about tank club. There crazy that we thought
last year the Giants had to draft a quarterback because
the Giants never draft from the top five of the
draft right once every twenty years. Last time they end
up swapping with the Chargers and they got Eli. This
time you end up, wow, we'll pass it a wide receiver.

(01:21:47):
But you should have taken up. They might drop from
the top five two consecutive years. Good fight with the
Raiders to see who gets the number one quarterback on
the board. Forty nine owners, no Cardinals, no Bills, no Browns.
I don't think we'll be there, but no, I mean
some of the Colts know all these other bad teams.

(01:22:08):
They have their quarterback of the future. Anyway, we got
a ton to get to, all right, next hour, we
have Marcellas will Is going to join us in the studio, right,
all right, we'll talk to some NFL with him. We'll
talk about his new book. That dude, new member of Fox.
That'll be awesome. Plus gets you ready for the World Series,
which gets on the way to night. Find out where

(01:22:28):
Ramos is watching. It does feel like you're supposed to
have rain and terrible like it. Things are cliche, things
are supposed to happen. Boston's weather is horrendous, so I
would expect nothing less than freezing, cold, rainy, gross night
in Boston. You know, streaming lunatic fans uh where the
strike stone suddenly shrinks for Kenley Jansen in the ninth inning,

(01:22:51):
just like the cliche should be that there's all these
star shots when the Dodgers play at home and you
have perfect sunny weather. Right, I can't wait for the
World Serious night. Kershaw taking on Chris Sale questions about
both of them coming up next. Numbers lie all the time. Actually,
don't believe me. I'll prove it to you next in
the Doug Gotler Show. Fox Sports Radio has the best

What happens to Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio Coming
to you from the beautiful sunny city of Los Angeles.

(01:23:35):
Marcelis Wiley, who used to dominate these radio airwaves locally
in l A, has joined us at Fox Sports. He's
got a new book out, He's gonna pimp the book.
Talks some NFL football with him. We'll talk about one
of his former two of his former teams, right Jags. Interesting,
what do you do with Bordles Chargers? They're really good
these beating bad teams and arrival the Raiders with the

(01:24:00):
ire sale that continues up in Oakland. We got a
ton to get to with that dude who will join
us up coming in fifteen minutes, join us for about
a half hours, so we'll talk some some uh and
and like he's a Clipper fan. I didn't know they
actually exist. I don't know how that happened. We'll talk
him Braun from last night and what he thinks of
the of the Lakers long term with Lebron. But a

(01:24:20):
bunch to get to welcome in here the dug Outlip Show.
We're getting ready for the World Series on Fox. It's rainy,
it's cold, it's New England. If you don't like the weather,
like they say in some places, you don't like the
weather weight fifteen minutes. If you don't like the weather,
leave New England because it's not going to change. It's
going to be bad. September is glorious. October is not

(01:24:41):
not as much in November is awful. November is really
what it what it changes. But um and they're taking
the tarp off, which means the rain has stopped and
will stop. It'll be cool to be blustery. You know
how it works. Chris Sale, who has You know if
he has? If the E R A and see me,
if the miles per hours in low nineties, high eighties,

(01:25:04):
he's in trouble. If it's high, if it's in the
high high nineties or mid nineties, he's gonna be dynamic.
He's as good a picture as there is in the sport,
and yet he had shoulder issues in the second half
of the year. Then, of course Clayton Kirscha on the
other side, who was not good in his first start
against the Brewers and was tremendous in his second start,

(01:25:25):
and uh and closed out the series with two strikeouts
in one and then pitched in the bottom of the
ninth inning against the brew crew. All right, so we
got a ton to get to. You know, numbers actually lie,
they do, do you guys remember the show Numbers Never Lie.
I actually came up with some of the other people

(01:25:47):
have used where I said men lie to women, women
lie to men, but numbers never lie. The truth is even.
That's a lot. So last night the New York Giants
chose to go for two after they were down fourteen,
and they scored a touchdown. Here's Pat Shermer, their head coach,
explaining his his reasoning. You increase your chances by if

(01:26:09):
you go for it and make it there. That's what
you do because then if we score touchdown, we just
kicked the extra point win. And I felt good about
the two point play. I think we got the ball
in there right, and we just didn't connect on it.
I just didn't connect, just didn't connect? Was just didn't connect?
Did you score the two points or did you not
score the two points? And what happens? What happened? Like

(01:26:31):
I understand the idea of facts not feelings, But feelings
do in fact matter in sports. There's a good portion
of sports that are about how you feel. There's a
good portion of sports how you feel and how hard
you play. It's hard to quantitate, it really is. It's
hard to quantitate. Think think of the pictures tonight. You know,

(01:26:57):
based upon the numbers, Based upon the numbers Clayton Kershaw
is X versus the Red Sox. They can break down
the numbers of what Clayton Kershaw pitches in the rain,
after the rain, with no rain, with wind blustering versus
right hand and hitting left hand versus every player. They
have numbers. He's pitched long enough in Major League Baseball.

(01:27:19):
They got numbers. The same thing for Chris Sale. But
which Chris Sale do we have night Do we have
Chris Sale that's pitching mid nineties or low nineties? Do
we have Clayton Kershaw who has command or doesn't have
command of the curveball? See? What what? What as much
as baseball is about analytics and numbers, we have no

(01:27:40):
idea if Clayton Kershaw is going to have command and
placement of his curveball right and of his slider. If
he has control of that command, if he can tell
you if he can backfoot the right handers. You guys
know what backfoot in the right hander is. That's when
you throw a breaking ball which breaks right to the
back foot or backdoors him. That's when you throw a

(01:28:00):
breaking ball like a slider that starts off the plate
that just nips the outside of the plate. That's a
back door, so you're backfoot him or your back door
m when you're lefty pitching to a right hand a hitter,
we don't know whether he has can control and you
know when he'll know. He will know when he's on
the mountain's warming up. How do you feel, night, Kersh

(01:28:21):
That's the Dave Robert's gonna ask him. Now. We also
know how many pitches generally, generally we know, like um,
if a guy gets when Page Martinez got to a
hundred pitches, suddenly he was hittable. We do have historical
data there. The difference is a guy like a Clayton Kershaw.
He doesn't normally throw out of the bullpen on no

(01:28:43):
rest after throwing a gem, so maybe his pitch limit
is different. Maybe it becomes sixty pitches tonight. That's something
that stats can't tell you. Analytics can't tell you how
somebody feels. And the reason that the Giants decision was
a bad one when you can't score all night against

(01:29:05):
one of the worst defense in the NFL. The Falcons
have statistically one of the worst defense in the NFL.
A lot of it is because of injuries. They've just
been besieged by injuries. But when you're playing and you
can't score against the Atlanta Falcons and you finally score
a touchdown and you cut it to eight points, when

(01:29:27):
you miss a two point conversion, it's almost like when
you win a game and your best player ends up
spraining his ankle, right, like, yeah, we won the game,
but Jimmy ended up with a sprained ankle. There's not
the same. Hey, we scored, let's get it. We'll score again.
Now you score, like, ah, now we gotta score, and
we gotta get a two point conversion. So I'm not

(01:29:50):
saying it's the worst decision on Earth, but the idea
that the numbers tell you that you should go for
it when you're down four teen, you score a touchdown
that tastes completely Forget about whether or not you have
a dual threat quarterback, where you guys who have a
guy who can run it in for a couple of yards,
how you play within the red zone. Your offensive line,

(01:30:12):
which hasn't been good for the Giants, Let's just be honest,
better this year, but only marginally so over a terrible
unit last year. Like all of these things are in
fact issues, everything needs context, Just like the trade Would
you trade Amari Cooper? They asked John Green, like, John
Greden looks like a liar today, right, would you trade?

(01:30:34):
He was like, I expect him to be a on
our franchise for a long time. But that's also because
they were asking for a first round pick and no
one was willing to offer. But then they offer a
first round pick nothing else. You're like, Okay, everybody's tradeable.
It just depends on how much you want to trade.

(01:30:55):
And even if you use just I mean, even if
just you stats, the idea that none meers don't lie.
Do you know who's six there's thirty two teams in
the NFL. Eli manning six and passing yards all right,
but he doesn't throw the ball downfield. Actually thirteenth in
yards per tempt and tied for eighth in completion percentage.

(01:31:16):
He's throwing the ball down the field more, completing in
a high percentage and throwing for a bunch of yards.
A matter of fact. Oh well, if you're doing that,
he's got to have a bunch of turnovers. Eli is
a high turnover guy. Well, he has four interceptions. That's
lessen Jared Golf, Pat Mahomes, Tom Brady, Ben Roethlisberger. The
numbers tell you he's having a great year. Does anybody
actually believe that? Then we go back to last week,

(01:31:38):
when people are like duty, Eli Banning is washed man.
They should have traded him before last year to the
Jacksonville Jaguars, like Gottlieb said, or drafted a quarterback like
Sam Donald like everyone seemed to say. That's because numbers
don't sometimes lie. They always lie because numbers provide you
no context, and context matters. You can say there are facts,

(01:32:03):
they're not feelings. But feelings matter in football, feelings matter
in sports, feelings matter in life. Context is he's twenty
five and passing touchdowns, which means they're bad in the
red zone. And oh yeah, by the way, the red
zone is when you go where you go for two.
Context tell you that was a bad decision because instead

(01:32:23):
of feeling good only down to touchdown on the road
against the Falcons, you feel like you gotta do leaps
and bounds just to tie a game. Now, right, coming
up next, Marcel's wild, he joins us. We'll ask him,
he former Jaguar, what what would he do with Blake portals,
We'll ask him with the Chargers for real? And if

(01:32:43):
the uh, the long game that Gruden's playing will ultimately work.
That's coming up next. But first, you know what, it's
not a smart plan, not a smart plan to say, hey,
take them at four oh one k. I'm converting it
to cash, paying the penalties, and I put it all
all in Powerball one point six billion. Baby, It's I'll
come my way. Not smart, You know it is smart

The doug Otlip Show. He's got a new book. Uh.
It's called Never Shut Up, The Life, Opinions and Unexpected

(01:34:31):
Adventures of an NFL Outlier. He's an NFL outlier because
from Compton went to Columbia. That's Ivy League Columbia, not
like the country of Columbia. And uh was the first
round pick in a stud now is a stud on TV.
He's joined me and Collins. Mothers have moved over from
the old place to the new place, and so uh,

(01:34:53):
we'll talk about his new book and we'll get his
thoughts on the Lakers. Last night, the Lakers moved to
oh and three on the season. It should be pointed
out that as much as they should have won in overtime,
they should have lost in regulation. They're down six at home,
they lose track of Kyle Kuzman transition. Lebron kicks out,

(01:35:14):
they hit it, three spurs come down. Brent Forbes takes
kind of a bad shot, misses and no one got
No one really pressures or double teams Lebron James. He
tried to call a time out. They didn't see him,
and they would didn't have any time outs, would have
been a technical foul. He takes an a contested three,
but a step in three from about and hits it.

(01:35:36):
Sentenced overtime, but in overtime they should have won the game.
They're up four. You get an empty possession shooting airball,
and the Spurs come down and for whatever reason, Lebron
James and lawns the ball both left their men. Lebron James,
Guy Rudy Gay hits an open three, then Lebron demands
the ball out of bounds, gets fouled up one, misses
both free throws. Spurs come, Spurs call it time out,

(01:36:00):
run a play. Patty Mills hits a jump shot, Lakers
called time out, throwing in. Lebron goes one on one
step back jump shot and missus and the Lakers aren't
on four. Here's Lebron after the game, when I got
myself into some process, I get it, man, we'll be fine.
So I didn't come here and thinking we were gonna
be you know, blazing storms, you know, run out the gate.
That's the process. And I understand thatselves. You know, the

(01:36:21):
game is you know, frustrating not to get to win.
But I'll showered, and I'm I'm good enough. I'm showered,
I'm good Who wants to be the one to tell
him that blazing storms is not even an expression? You
wanna do? You wanna go with that? Blazing saddles or
all guns blazing? I think it was all guns blazing
is what he was looking for by or what expression

(01:36:42):
do you think he was looking for when he says
I didn't think we'd get here and be blazing storms,
I would say guns of blazing, guns of blazing, guns
of blazing. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I think it was I
think it was guns of blazing. Guns of blazing would
be the one. Huh okay. Um, So he didn't think
that it would be easy. I think he's reasonable about that.

(01:37:04):
I think that's a smart way to look at it.
But I also think that he may not realize how
much more difficult it is when you're in the West,
how much more difficult it is when you're thirty four,
how much more difficult it is when you're playing a
different style than you've ever played, And how much more
difficult it is when you're not surrounded by any other Um.

(01:37:27):
You're not surrounded by any other star players. When he
went to Miami, he joined Dayne Wade's team. Dwayne Wade
was in his prime and had won an NBA Finals MVP,
and he brought over Chris Bosh, who was an NBA
All Star. There are no all stars in this team.
There are no Dwyane Wades that were waiting for him.

(01:37:49):
And look, I like many of the things they did,
but with the roster, and I understand why they're playing fast,
But Lebron isn't a customer playing this fast. He isn't
accustomer playing this level of talent. And here's the kicker.
He is thirty four. He's different. He can't just flip
the switch and go like, hey, I'm gonna just dominate
the game now both ends of the floor. He was

(01:38:10):
good enough in his absolute peak prime to do that,
and I don't think he is. And part of it
is he's not surrounded by that good of town. So
I think the whole thing, the whole exercise is fascinating.
Here's gonna do, uh dad, dude. So he gets done

(01:38:31):
with this TV show about twenty five minutes ago, So
then he has to drive up the four or five.
That could be dicey. This is what I do when
I get done doing cowherd um. So he's gonna join
us here a half past the hour. Here's what I
want to do, all right. I want to get Buyer
in here and do the press, and then we're gonna
do get him, get his update, and then we'll bring

(01:38:52):
in Marcel's We kind of do some things out of order.
If you listen to Doug Gottlieb show usually at this time,
we'll get you, we will make our picks, we'll get
you ready for a world series. First, let's get to
the part the press. Doug on the heels of that
Lakers talk. Bravada has listed odds and who's going to
be the first coach to leave their posts and NBA season.

(01:39:15):
Just take a guest. Who's on top? That would be
the case seven to four odds for Luke Walton. Yes,
Tom Thibodeau is actually next at two to one, Fred
Hoiberg five to one, with Billy Donovan at fifteen to two. Yeah,
here's the there's a there's a couple of things here. Um,
I believe the Lakers think he can really coach. I do,

(01:39:37):
and the Bulls are O and three, and I know
Hoiberg can coach, but I think Hoiberg or TIBs would
be But the problem with Tips is they're actually winning games.
The Lakers are oh and three, and now they played
three playoff teams and let's see the upcoming st They
played the Son's Upcoming next and the Sons just got stomped.

(01:39:58):
They gave up seventy there down seventy forties. Havent to
have the Golden State Warriors. So they got Phoenix on
the road and then they play back to back nights.
They play Thursday this week against the Denver Nuggets. My
guests would be My guests would be that they win
one of these next two games. But remember, you go
to Phoenix the first time this year, and as much

(01:40:20):
as Phoenix isn't very good and did just kept blown out,
this is your biggest this is Phoenix's biggest game. It's
bigger than Golden State coming to town. Now, the Lakers
are gonna be without Rajon Rondo for those two games. Rondo, today,
speaking to ESPN, denied that he spit on Rockets card
Chris Paul intentionally during Saturday's game, and also said that

(01:40:41):
Paul was a horrible teammate and doesn't treat people well.
He added that the league wants to keep up Chris
Paul's good guy image and that's why Rondo got the
three game ban while Paul just got two games for
their actions. Also Rondo saying the reason that it wasn't
an intentional spit was because he was wearing a mouth
hard at the time and nobody else reacted to the

(01:41:03):
spinning incidents. Everybody else got spit on, right, it could
be just a misunderstanding. By the way, Glenn Big Baby
Davis chimed in, I've played on both I played with
both of them. CP three is a very bad teammate. Oh,
I like to you, I'm on team CP three as
a player. I have not lived with lived with him
every every day, right, he said. Quote if I spit
on you, the bottom line, there's not gonna be a

(01:41:25):
finger pointing. If you felt that I spit on you,
then all bets are off to look at my body language.
If I spit on purpose, I'm gonna be ready for
a man to swing on me. You ain't gonna have
my hands on my hip, my head. Look away, somebody
if I spit on them after that blank goes down
within thirty seconds. You run and tell a signline reporter
I spit on you. If I spit on you, you're
gonna try and get me. You're not gonna try and

(01:41:46):
make up the stories you can look like the good guy.
It makes no sense. I will point out that as
much as we can say CP three is a bad team,
guys are gonna say CP three is bad teammate. Um.
I don't have firsthand, but I have second and third
hand information that says that Rondo is an equally bad teammate.

(01:42:06):
Go ahead, Ron. It even goes back to Kentucky, doesn't it. Yes,
there's a story out of Kentucky which has been verified
to me. The uh going off script here? Just one
week into the NBA season, do you guys know who
the top three scores are in the NBA. I'm gonna
go with Janice Anthony Davis. Uh. The third one sounds

(01:42:31):
like it will be something bizarre. Um? Can I have
a hint? Um, I'll tell you right now. You're over two.
This is as crazy as it is number three. How
about this windy City Chicago leaving scores? Yeah? Well, you're
an average or average m okay, Windy City is I

(01:42:54):
don't even know who Zach Levine, that's right, Zach Levine
doesn't have those two in credis. Yes, how about this
former Windy City would be uh empty stats empty stad Zach,
They're three, aren't they there? Uh yeah? What what what others? Yeah?
I don't think they did one. Um former Wendy City. Uh.
Nicola Meratich, that's right. Nicolas did have a huge game

(01:43:16):
the other day. Yeah. And Kemba Walker. Yeah, crazy like
you would think, you know, as he said, Joannest Durant's
all them, but um, well I just I know that. Yeah,
and Durant had, Drant had Durants had big nights. But
they've been like high twenties every night. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
there it is. Speaking of the bulls, Chris done. Give
him his four to six weeks with the Spring mcl

(01:43:36):
Ben Simmons doubtful tonight for the Sixers against the Pistons
because of back spasms. You excited for college hoops, Doug.
I am excited for college here. As a matter of fact.
I just I've I've locked in some of my games
with my schedule, and I'm trying to negotiate things and
move things around. I'm supert ey sad. Why do? Because
the preseason All American Team was announced today. Carson Edwards
of Purdue leading that squad. North Carolina is Luke May

(01:43:58):
made the first team, Duke for a Shman R J.
Barrett on the squad. Diedrich Lawson of Kansas named to
the first team, while there was a tie for the
fifth spot, Wisconsin's Ethan happened events klab Martin tying for
voting for that final spot. Don't need a drum roll.
I already revealed them. But six making it on the
AP preseason, here we go. We got six on the

(01:44:18):
American team, like you have five on the floor. This
is almost as bad as when remember when we were kids,
being on the cover Sports Illustrated was the biggest thing, right,
And I understand that in an effort to get readership
and people to buy more off the news stands that
they've had other covers, but now they have regional covers
for these things, and so it's not nearly as cool
having six guys on your All American team. That's the

(01:44:41):
same and arbitrators denied a grievance against the Bengals by
Panthers safety Eric Read. Now the nflp A filed the
grievance on behalf of Read, claiming that the Bengals asked
him if you would continue to kneel for the anthem
mayvi he signed the team. The arbitrator ruled that the
Bengal said every right to ask that question during the
interview process. Uh. That Uh, that's interesting because that that

(01:45:05):
strikes right. I mean, like Eric Reid thinking everybody's out
to get him, and that thing went to court and
the team won. Um, It's it's always fascinating to me.
I look, I think Eric Reid looks terrible from last Sunday,
this whole idea, Malcolm Jenkins got a hundred million dollars right,
one hundred million dollars, hundred million dollars pulled together for

(01:45:26):
uh issues, for for the players to use towards um,
social justice and anything they'd like. And somehow he's the
bad guy because he negotiated the deal on behalf of
the players when Eric Reed wasn't willing to come to
the table. Finally, Doug Raiders quarterback Derek Carr denying that
he cried following a hit in their Week seven loss. Yeah,

(01:45:50):
responding to a tweets sent by a family member to
another tweet that was being uh talked about Derek Carr's
toughness or lock thereof. Car denied that he cried following
their hits. You crying, not crying out there? Not not
not crying. I'm not not crying. That's what he said.

(01:46:12):
I'm not not crying. That was That was That was
his response. Um, all right, michel Is Wiley would join
us in a second. Let's first get you an updated
Dan Buyer. I'll give you an update on what's happening
in Boston. World Series Game one tonight, Red Sox and
Dodgers coverage on Fox begins in two hours. First pitch
eight or nine Eastern time. Clayton Kershaw goes up against

(01:46:32):
Chris Say and I really want to win the World Series.
I think that's no different than the other fifty guys
in both locker rooms, though I think it doesn't. I
think the only difference maybe is that because we've gotten
so close in the past, because we've gotten to go
to the postseason, were a little bit spoiled in our
expectations every year with the Dodgers, which is a great thing.
Kershaw back in the world series for the second straight year.
Dodgers going with a righty heavy line up against the

(01:46:55):
Red Sox tonight. Brian Dozer is gonna lead lead off
for the Dodgers play second. It you got David Free
spatting third at first base. Matt Kemp's going to be
the d h tonight for l A batting practice canceled
because of rain. The rain has moved out first pitch
eight or nine Eastern Time. A couple of NFL notes
Jets on Free, it's a wide receiver, Rochard, Matthews Eagles
defensive and Dirk barn that's gonna miss the rest of

(01:47:15):
the season following shoulder surgery. Giants tradded Eli Apple to
the Saints and Bronco's backup quarterback Ched Kelly arrested on
charges of criminal trespassing this morning after allegedly going into
a stranger's home in Inglewood, Colorado. Doug Doug Gotta leaves
show Fox Sports Radio that other voice like if you're
from if you if you're in l A, You're like, man,
I missed that voice on radio. Marcela is wildly dad

(01:47:37):
dude who came over and joined Fox. The show is
speak for yourself. It starts at uh noon Pacific three
o'clock Eastern time. He's got the greatest schedule in all
of because because Calherd gets there at like six six fifteen,
and he's at a new he's done at noon. You
don't get there at six fifteen and you're done in
one thirty. Yeah. I get there at eleven for prep

(01:47:58):
and makeup and wardrobe, and I'm out at one thirty.
That was one of the deal points that said, you
know what, it was fun where I was, but it's
better where I'm at. The new book is called Never
Shut Up. The Life, Opinions and Unexpected Adventures of an
NFL Outlier. I would guess that NFL outlier would be, Hey,
most football players don't leave Compton to go to the
IVY League in Colombia, then go stay in the league

(01:48:22):
and as a first round draft pick, and then when
you get out of it, go right into the media
and do well. Is that is that the NFL outlier? Man?
You're smart, smarter than me. It's funny. I've been doing
a lot of interviews and people say, so, what's the
outlier part? And I'm like, well, it's kind of interesting.
It's a role less travel, not the Yellow Big Road
to the NFL. Obviously, going to Columbia, a lot of
naysayers told me that I wouldn't make it to the NFL.

(01:48:43):
Uh if I went to Columbia and a lot of
people in Compton's and Ivy League school, you'll never make
it there. So I've always kind of gone against the
grain and away from the herd. And Uh, it's been
great for me and to live a life that I've
actually dreamed and to desire. What what was that like?
Because my dad actually got his masters from Columbia. I

(01:49:04):
never I've never been there until we moved back when
I was at CBS and I was working in the
city and I went to a basketball game there and
you step in and it's it's actually like stepping back
in time. It looks like when I would guess the
seventeen or eighteen hundreds in New York would be with
the buildings and the architecture or whatever. But to go
from Compton you shot your first day at Columbia, What

(01:49:25):
was it like? Social shock? Uh, it's a pedestrian city,
as you know New York. Everyone's in your space, everyone's
sharing energy, everyone's just gotten to get somewhere and its
mad rush, but they're walking. And I remember the first
time I walked by a group of guys, maybe like
ten dudes in front of a bodega. And in l
a if you see ten dudes on the corner in
front of a liquor store, uh, don't go there. You

(01:49:46):
don't go down. You don't need a Chico stick that bad, right,
But in New York that's just the dudes hanging chilling.
And I remember just having to learn a new set
of rules and customs, and then you get in the classroom.
Dudes were more com petitive in the class than guys
were on the field in the hood. And I mean
dudes dressing up in three piece suits and taking naps

(01:50:08):
before they had to go to the professor to speak.
I'm like, y'all are all in in the classroom. So
it was I opened in terms of perspective. Um, when
when I grew up, I'm a little bit older than you,
but I remember when I grew up, Columbia had like
the nation's longest losing stream and they actually started covering it,
and they used to cover it on NFL games like, oh,
Columbia's got the longest longest losing streak. Um, what was

(01:50:29):
that like though? To play to be like an NFL
caliber athlete playing in the IV. Yeah, my coach that
recruited me, retailer, told me something. We're sitting at the
top of the Empire State building a few select recruits,
and he's like, do you want to go somewhere and
carry the towards or you want to go somewhere and
like the towards. Now, I'm a guy that has prospects
and other opportunities to go to major college football factories.

(01:50:52):
And that sold me big fishing a little pond. Uh,
get a great academic reputation and degree, but more importantly
have an impact. And I just went back to Columbia
for homecoming. So what we lost? We're not on the street,
but we lost again. But is tight knit the community,
the family aspect is something that really separates it from

(01:51:14):
other schools in terms of that network. And but but
is it worth the sacrifice of Like, dude, you could
have played in the SEC or in back twelve? Right?
So is it in all? In all honesty? Is that?
Is is that worth what you have now? Is that
worth sacrificing? Hey? On a on a college football Saturday.
You can't watch your alma mater play and play for

(01:51:34):
Nash Tim you can. There's no you gotta I searched
to even find the games on TV. Yeah, there's a tradeoff.
There is the tradeoff worth it absolutely if you want
to play the long game, no matter what sport, and
you play, uh, you're going to stop playing that sport.
And so it's weird. Columbia puts me in places in
mental spaces what others in terms of reception that no

(01:51:58):
football factory will allow me. Think about that, that stigma,
dumb jock, or just think about how many times you're
you're looking at an athlete and you're like, what else
did this guy know beyond the scope of the game.
And I'm just the opposite. As soon as I meet
someone there, our brows go up. You went to Colombia
and they presume I'm intelligent and we just go all
these different places. Say you're from Compton, people like, oh,

(01:52:19):
you must must have must have been been a drug dealer,
right like big football players like. And then if I
went to one of those schools, I have been over Yeah,
I mean I wouldn't play living living down to any
stereotype people have, whereas you destroyed so many, so many stereotypes. Um,
what about the transition to the NFL, because you go like, look,

(01:52:41):
you can change your body and you can be ready.
But you were playing against ivy league dudes. To all
of a sudden playing in the NFL. What was that
like in terms of the speed and skills of everybody
else around you. Yeah, now that's one of the sacrifices.
You're not playing big business, big college football. So when
you get to the pros, there's some ready made rookies.
Who is your coach, Marv Levy. So I'm there with

(01:53:03):
Bruce Smith, the greatest d N of all time, and
I'm sitting there playing d N looking at him like
how does he make it look so easy? And then
with other rookies from big schools Texas, A and M,
and I'm like, how do they make you look so easy?
And it was a struggle for me because that's one
of the consequences of going to a Columbia. Your technique,
your craft, You're not gonna know about the big business

(01:53:24):
of of football. So I was behind eight ball in
those respects, But I kept my eyes open, my ears open,
So I was a fast Learner. That's that dude. Marcellus
wildly new books called Never Shut Up. You can pick
it up and read about his life and his times. Um,
I want to ask you about one of your former teams,
the Jacksonville Jaguars. Uh not now, Okay, So so they

(01:53:47):
last year, they have this dream year and they come
up short on the road to the Patriots. So they
redo Lake Borders contract because he finally lives up to
their expectations. Now they owe him like nineteen next year
and he's reverted back and he's a guy who his
confidences down. It just it just and they're gonna start

(01:54:07):
him this week because they kind of have to. But
what do you do if he doesn't turn it around? Yeah,
money talks right now. So obviously this is from the
owner down as a directive. Get him on the field
and let's figure this out. Let's let's hit the gavel
in terms of who Blake Bortles is, because we we
kind of restored him and gave him another opportunity because

(01:54:28):
of the contract. So I've been in that situation before.
Rob Johnson from Jacksonville comes to Buffalo, gets the contract,
gets injured, Flutie takes over and then all of a sudden,
we get to the playoffs with like it's Doug Fluti's team, right,
Oh no, because that money was already invested to Rob Johnson.
He had to start that game against Tennessee Music City
Miracle rest is history. We lose that game. They're in

(01:54:49):
the same position. Uh, the Jacksonville Jaguars is trying to
make sure that they get an r O I on
Blake Borders. Problem is his confidence is shot once again.
He's going out there for throwing for sixty one yards
and no one believes in that position. That position is
not just by production, it's by inspiration. If you're if

(01:55:09):
you're Blake Borders, you have to inspire others. If not,
you have a defeated team. And now it's affecting the defense.
Look at Jalen Ramsey out there. Now he's letting gods
just catch the ball on him left and right quick. Absolutely,
qu Yeah, they're they're defeated. I forgot that. You were
you on the field in the Music City of America. Yeah,
well well no, no, not on the field. I wasn't
one of the eleven, but I was on the sidelines
and obviously felt the pain. Yeah, but how how far

(01:55:31):
into the play did you realize that he was going
to score? Adown O'Neil caught it and started jogging and
and something in me said, that's not right. He threw
it to white check. Then I was like, oh no.
And then everyone lost like their their field of vision
on the individual, and we saw the whole field as
a collective. But we're on the sideline. We're like, no,

(01:55:52):
we saw Dicing over there by himself. Well, I oh no,
And I'm not lying. They're lucky. They did give Jeff
Fisher credit. He designed that play in a way where
Dicer ran down their sideline. Because I'm not lying, I
would have I don't know what the penalty is, it's
probably just a touchdown. I would have to tackle him,
Like you were sitting there in the moment, like, oh god.

(01:56:12):
We were losing the entire game until like ten seconds
ago one tackle meaningless tackle, and we win that game
in advance. And he caught that ball and we were like,
oh god, but we knew it was a four past,
so we thought they would overturn it. Then the refs
got under the cape started to review it. That Tennessee
crowd said, if you overturned this one. I tell you

(01:56:33):
ain't gonna make it out of here, and we know
the rest. Marcellis wild. He joined us in the Doug
Gali Show. Okay, so the book is never shut up,
Never shut up? All right? He is a clip. He's
like the only guys every game. Don't do that for
the other team. For the other team, I mean the
team that one a game this year, not to winless Lakers.
Congratulations on that, on that, on that one win. We're
gonna talk. We'll talk about Lebron. Does talk about the

(01:56:55):
long game? Does Lebron win the long game by coming

That dude kind enough to spend some time with the seas.
Like I told you, I'm not doing any radio. When
I come to five, I'm a TV guy. Now I'm
not doing any radio. Like, guess what, you want to

(01:57:37):
sell a book, you gotta come on some radio. You
gotta gotta slumming, slumming radio, you know what's funny. Through
the negotiations, so everyone's like, why do you leave ESPN?
And I'm like, January one. So many exects formerly of
ESPN now at Fox start calling me up. Jason was
visiting me. I don't know if this is against NT
double A violations, but he's coming to my house and
he's telling me how great it is over there and

(01:57:57):
I should look at making the transition. I was all right, right,
and then through negotiations, I kept saying I want to
do radio and I was used to doing radio for
ten years, and they were like, no, just do one show.
We want your energy high, we want you to focus
narrowly on this and that's it. And then next round
of negotiation, I want to do radio. In part I
wanted to just get more money because I knew radio

(01:58:18):
was easy money, like you get you know what I'm about.
And they were like no. And then finally I was like,
all right, forget it this go around nor radio. Guess
what I now know. I'm never doing radio again. Doug
about I'm out the game, brother, you gotta can't. You're
not done it one thirty, not done there as all
these uh, all those times you've done a like six
o'clock and missed dinner with the kids. So that dude

(01:58:41):
joining us the new book Never Shut Up The Life,
Opinions and Unexpected Adventures of an NFL Outlier. You're also
you're also an outlier in the l A sports fandom, right,
You're like the guy like I'll be the Clipper fan,
even Clipper Darryl ditch the Clippers. He did for a
second there he did. I d m the hell out
of him. I said, if you come back over here,
if forever over okay, So give me your assessment. Three

(01:59:03):
games in the Lebron air in l A. Um, Look,
there'll be fine. I think. Right now, they're just in
the kitchen cooking it up. And as you know, Grandma said,
don't come in here too. His ready and it's not
ready yet. Uh. A lot of deference and reverence occurs
when you're playing with a superstar, whether it's Kobe and
the young core or when I've been on the team
before we had Hall of famers there, you don't flex

(01:59:25):
fully in the beginning. Even Lebron when he went to
Miami year one with Dwayne Wade, who at the time
was the number three player in the world, it took
them time. Remember that nine and eight star remember but
they but they still had Dwayne Wade and Chris Bosh
You could individually win a game, whereas this team, I
agree with you're still kind of trying to work out
the kinks and they're trying to play a different style,

(01:59:47):
which is really hard for him. But he doesn't have
anybody else who can carry this. There's not Kuzma can
score a bunch of points, but he's not like, give
me the ball, get out of the way, I'll score.
They don't have. That's kind of my fear is that
he's a little bit older, so his ability to are
your team through tough times isn't as good. Uh, where'd
you get that? Though last year was a better year
for Lebron, there's no dissension coming down to the hill.

(02:00:08):
Yet we haven't seen him pump the brakes in terms
of I'm falling off yet. Well, he doesn't he doesn't
if he doesn't play as hard defensively, right, No, no one,
you can't do what he saves himself. He himself. You're smart,
but it's harder when you're on a different team that
doesn't have those guys. He you know, at least last
year he did have Kevin Love and in previous years
he had Kyrie Irving. I think that confidence is coming

(02:00:30):
from this young group. They're getting to empower. Look at it,
Alonzo Ball, consecutive good games. Who's what thirty six, thirty
eight last night? And then you look at Brandon Ingram,
who is a good player when he's not fighting. And
I think all those young guys are now filling. Hey,
I'm with the king. The homie got the strap. You
know it is when your homie he's like, bring him here,

(02:00:51):
all of a sudden, you flex, your chest is out there.
And I think this young core is gonna mature faster
because they know they got some back. A Compton, that right,
that's a Compton. I'm gonna come in and come and
scrapped Marcel's. Well, Marcel's so you are you're still a buy. Look,
I'm not a seller into it. I just think it's

(02:01:11):
in the West makes it harder. Um And and as
much as I think he likes Luke and they all
think he can coach, you know in the NBA, like
if you haven't won anything, like you kind of got
to prove it to him. And so we'll we'll see
how And he's one of two guys. Only two guys
in that building weren't brought on by Polinka and Magic
and that's that's Brandon Ingram and that's Luke Walton, right, So, uh,

(02:01:35):
there's playing for Luke who's who is Well, though he's
good and smart, he is unproven. You don't really have
another proven star and he's thirty four. He's not gonna
be able to just hey, I'm gonna win this game
like you used to. I'm a little more cautious of
how it goes this year. I do think long term
it ends up being a win. He'll get other players there,
and I think the younger players they have enough good ones.

(02:01:55):
But I'm I'm cautiously pessimistic if they don't start winning
a message. I understand you prepped, but you watched the
game last night. He almost won that game like they
were dead in regulation and Lebron helped him survived over
time if he makes free throws, which he never does
in clutch moments, but if he would have, then they
win that game as well. Okay, so he never makes

(02:02:15):
so the Kobe guy or the MJ guy, Yeah, says, dude,
you didn't miss one free throw, Andy miss one free throw?
Goes in. Yeah, you missed two free and then you
missed the game. Yeah that's bad. I mean, you know
what's funny. The only thing that saved him was the
three pointer before over time. That saved him in terms

(02:02:36):
of that conversation because it would have went sour south fast.
But I think Lebron has always had his free throw issues,
so we kind of give him a pass there, and
that faded way three. I think he fell in love
with it because he had the three pointer in regulations.
So a little more evidence needed. Give me one story.
One thing somebody's gonna learn about you in this book
that they did not know. Oh my god, doing radio

(02:02:58):
for so many years, it's funny. People keep hitting me
on Twitter and Instagram. Did did this story making? I'm like, uh,
but nationally that was in the number one show locally, yeah,
but nationally. Yeah, So there was a story, and somebody's
gonna pick up and go like, I cannot believe that's that.
You got two minutes, dude. You know I'm hitting the

(02:03:19):
four or five whether or not. I think in this situation,
it's really the emotional content. I don't want to give
stories away because people kind of love me for my stories. Um,
some stories didn't make it, the Ferrari stories not in there,
so leave me alone, people. Uh, here's the thing, the
emotional content that goes with the ups and downs. I
tell a lot what what was the low what was
the what was it that was lowest point? Lowest point

(02:03:42):
is probably my depression year in San Diego, when I
realized the game had left me, but I still was
out there on the field. Um to talk about that,
and then being around young guns like a Ladini and
Thomason or junior say Rodney Harrison, who was still at
the peak of their powers, and I felt robbed of mind,
in part because I was injured every year my prime.

(02:04:04):
So that was one of the circumstances. But it's really
a story to inspire people. So hey, when you're down,
the difference between the champ of the contender champ gets
up one more time. Alright, pick up this book. Never
shut up Marcellus while who is? They call him that
dude who came up with that dude a teammates in
San Diego. Instead of saying you're the man because they
were like that's corny, They're like, you're that dude. You're

(02:04:26):
that dude that's making plays on the field. You're that
dude that's DJ and at the club, you're that dude
that's talking at this keynote speech giving no one, No
one person gets credit. I would say Orlando rough because
he said it the loudest and the mosa but I
don't think he was the originator, but he's certainly was
that going in he is. He is that dude. This
is the this book Ramos. I know Rama's just picking

(02:04:46):
the Dodgers to win music. Who wins thenight? I'll go
with the Red Sox. What about you? Because you're a hater?
What about you? Uh? Dan Buyer cap Marcell's is Kershall pitching?
Yes he is right, Red Socks. I know the narrative.
He did pitch well his last stock outside of St.
Louis Games in the seventh I do think the Red

(02:05:06):
Sox win. I think the Red Sox, The better team
