(00:21):
listening to Fox Sports Radio Booming Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. What. I hope you're having a great day.
I hope you enjoyed sports last night. Specifically, No, not
Blake Griffin's he dropped World Series on the way on

(00:43):
Fox and the Boston Red Sox take a one game
to none lead. We'll start there. We will get you
into some National Football leagu discussion. Mason Crosby, kicker with
Green Bay Packers. I'm gonna ask him about the Nightmare
game where he missed kick after kick after kick and
uh and then to come back and hit the game

(01:04):
winning kicked the very next week, let's talk with Mason
Crosby the Green Bay Packers. Upcoming the Broncos release Swag Kelly.
Chad Kelly now has hit the hit hit for the cycle.
You ready for it. He's been kicked off of his
high school, college and pro team. Right. I feel like
that's nukela luch level a new another new league record.

(01:28):
So we'll get to some of that and what the
NFL has finally figured out that baseball and basketball figured
out a while back or a while ago, depending on
what part of the country you're listening into. Robert Woods
and the Rams will join us. Matt Holliday, seven time
All Star, a World Series champ, will get his thoughts

(01:49):
on last night, and great co Suth NFL Films will
join us for his weekly stop. Man, do we got
a lot to get to. Let's begin last night in
Boston with the Red Sox took a one game to
lead and for the record, Clayton Manning, I mean Clayton
Kershaw wasn't great in a big spot. Again. Now, sometimes

(02:10):
I think it's going to the well too much with Kershaw,
and he had an outstanding second outing with the but
with the Dodgers against the Brewers and then closed out
the series out of the bullpen. You go to that
well too much, and this is what happens. He gets
bat around four innings, pitched seven hits, five earned runs,

(02:31):
he walked three, struck out five, struggled some with not
just control but location and pitching, much like real estate
is about location, location, location, still because Chris Sale wasn't
great either. Remember this is Chris sale stud picture for
the Red Sox. He gave up five hits, only three runs,

(02:53):
struck out seven, but only last four innings as well,
and he turned it over to the Red Sox bullpen,
which has been much blind. It was four. It was
five to four in the seventh inning. The Dodgers had
just played a run. They had bases loaded, made him
accado with a short sack fly only plates one run.
But this game was very much hanging in the balance.

(03:15):
And though Craig Kimberl was yet to be used, and
so is Nathan Nevaldi, the fact is, you tell me
what's better to have a one run lead or to
have a four run lead. So with a one run lead,
with one run lead, Pedro Bias was in the game
at the start of the bottom of the seventh inning.

(03:37):
Now Bias, who is right hand, came came in and
struck out the first two batters he faced. Excuse me,
he struck out one. Then they intentionally walked another in
order in order to get a double play first and second.
Then he struck out another. She got runners at first
and second and two outs, and Dave Rits goes to

(04:00):
the mound and pulls Pedro Bias out because by the
book by the numbers, by the book by the numbers,
it was better. He was better going to Alex Wood
out of the pen. Here's what happened when he swings
it drives walk a left high at day five, a
wall god three, red pitch hover red wardnon Yes, get

(04:23):
you a flavor, have a Red Sox. Late at eight
to four, Eduardo Noniez with the home run, and that
was that, right, You get a four run lead at
that point the game. If Aldi comes in and pitch
as well, so too does Craig Kimbrell, and the Red
Sox take and take a one game to none, leading
the best of seven series. Remember this is after an
inning in which the Dodgers had bases loaded with only

(04:48):
one out. They only played in one run, but they
were putting pressure on that Red Sox bullpen. Now Bennet's
end came in against Uraius and hits the ground rule double.
They bring in Bias. He strikes out Moreland, they intentionally
walk Martinez Andrew uh what's name a Zander Bogart's strikes

(05:11):
out swinging, and both Bogart's and Moreland look completely overmatched
by Bias. So of course they bring in Wood and
instead of having lefty lefty as Devers was up for
the Red Sox Eduard o'nioniez from the right side of
the plate comes in. Now, for the record, if you

(05:32):
wanted to go full analytics, if you really want to
do it by the books, you could do what the
Rais did earlier this year, what we've seen Joe Madden
doing the regular season. That's you could have stucked Bias
out in right field and then if they're gonna pinch
hit for Dev's with Nenez, switch him and put Alex
would in right field. In baseball, there is this when

(05:55):
you take a picture out of the game, you can't
put him back in. You're right, you can't put him
back in. But if you take him off the mound
and switch positions, you can put him back in. Still,
it's the idea of going by the book, going by
the numbers, when all you have to do is watch

(06:16):
and whether it was Morland or Zander Bogart's they look
completely overmatched against Bias, and sadly this is this is
the case in baseball. We have taken gut feel out
of it. We go by the What does the book say, Well,
damn it, we're going by the book. Here's Dave Roberts

(06:38):
explaining his decision. Deva is really good against the right hander,
and to get a guy off the bench. And Nunez
I really liked Alex inst spot. I did so um
whether they were going to hit Devas with a lead
or go to the bench and go with Nunez. I
still liked alex ins spot and he hit a three
run home run. Now part of it is it's like surgery, right,

(07:01):
any time you go to the pen, you run the
risk of a guy being off his game or a
guy struggling with the magnitude of the moment. Bias had
clearly settled in. He comes in and immediately strikes out Moreland.
The magnitude of the moment was not too much for him.
He was hitting his spots and he was thrown in

(07:22):
the mid to high nineties. And so every time you
go in, you run the risk of an Alex would
we think based upon the numbers, Alex, you like Alex
would in that spot, but you have no idea how
he's feeling on a Tuesday night in October on the
road in Boston when he thinks he's gonna fix face
a lefty and steady faces devers. You miss by that

(07:43):
much because you're not quite there. You're not perfect in
this whole idea. Well, you know, we asked him for
the game, and what guy I asked before a World
Series game is gonna say not skip pass over me.
I'm not locating today, No, thank you. But I don't
think Dave Roberts wanted to do that. Like Dave Roberts
is a life for baseball guy. Remember Dave Roberts stole

(08:06):
the most important base in the history of the Boston
Red Sox when they're down three games to none against
the New York Yankees. But in order to get his
job and keep his job, he had to please his bosses.
And this is where it's relatable to all of us,
right that sometimes you gotta do something because your boss
says that's what you're gonna do. Yeah, I don't know.

(08:28):
My gut tells me this is not the good idea. Well,
I guess what, I'm the boss. It's a good idea.
That's exactly what happened here, precisely what happened here. It's
not that Dave Robberts doesn't believe in the numbers. It's
not that Dave robbers didn't think lefty lefty generally. But

(08:48):
Dave Roberts could see what all of us saw, which
is Bayas was dealing locating and there is again this
doesn't you don't see this by the book. But if
Bias comes up and he's facing a left hander as
a righty, knowing the numbers say go to Alex Wood
and you stick with him, you don't think that pumps

(09:10):
some confidence into Bias's blood. Of course it does, but
the numbers don't tell you that. But this isn't about
Dave Roberts being completely sold out to the numbers. It's
selling out to what his boss wants, because that's how
he got his job instead of Don Mattingly, and that's
how he'll keep his job. And that's sadly the state
of baseball. Andrew Friedman is the general manager. He comes

(09:34):
from the Tampa Bay Rays. They go by the numbers,
and that's exactly what they're doing here, it becomes over
managing and paralysis by analysis. Just watch the game. How's
bias pitching? Great? Then don't do anything. Don't do anything.

(09:54):
Would that happen in basketball? Guy hits two jump shots? Hey,
you gotta go get him? Why I don't like this
matchup as much? Will that happened in football? Man, they
cannot cover Julio Jones? Well, they change the matchup. They
put Richard Sherman on him. Let's stop throwing to Julio Jones. No,
you make them. You make as much as numbers may

(10:18):
tell you. Hey, maybe it's time to do something else.
Your gun has to weigh at least fi of it.
That's why it's important that you played. If you don't
want any sort of relatable, if you don't want any
sort of feeling of understanding of the game, higher, damn robot.

(10:39):
But we've made robots out of smart baseball people. Tal
Aaron Boone got the job. Dave Roberts got the job. Listen,
just manage he goes, and we'll manage the game for you.
When the numbers say make a change, you make a change.
And that game went from winnable to unwinnable with one
ill fated vision because the truth is that if he

(11:04):
left bias in there, and he said, you know the
number said Alex would But I also knew that if
I put wood in they'd hit a right They hit
a righty against him, And I'm watching Bayaz and he
was pitching great. We see this with starting pictures. All
the time. Guy is dealing and so instead of letting

(11:27):
him come out to start the next inning, we pull
him because the book says, based upon this number of
pitches against this hitter, let him pitch a guy to
a guy. Because the old what's the worst thing that
could happen actually happened when they made the change. This
is what happens in relationships. You're gonna do something for

(11:49):
your wife which you know is wrong that you shouldn't
do with your girlfriend or your boyfriend, your husband, and
you do it in your job all the time. I
don't want to do this. I know it's not the
right thing, but this is how I to keep my
job because if I'm wrong, I will take the blame.
But the truth is, this is why I got the job,
and my boss told me to do it. Packers kicker

(12:12):
Mason Crosby joins the show next, he had a nightmare
game against the Lions, only to come back and hit
the game winning field goal against the Niners one week later.

Com Today Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Just a
quick trivia question, right, There's some guys that become synonymous
with the team. Some guys become synonymous with the team.

(13:58):
How many of years do you think Mason crows b
has played for the Green Bay Packers music? What do
you think? I'm gonna go? Nine? Nine? Nine? Uh? John? What? John?
What are you gonna? H What are you gonna? What
are you gonna get? Twelve years? Twelve years? Yes? Okay? Um.

(14:20):
Mason Crosby joins us in The Doug Gottlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Mason, what's the correct answer? Is correct?
Twelve is correct? Oh wow, wow, that is really Look
at ramost walking or walking around. Yeah, he is. He
is absolutely celebrating. It's a really kind of amazing. Um,
there's there's like this weird world of kickers where you know,

(14:43):
Cody Park you whatever. I mean, he's been on several
different teams, Dolphins last year, Bears this year. Who knows
where he'll be next year? He signed a one year,
a big money deal. So many other guys kind of
bounce around with exception of you, uh, justin Tucker, Um,
I'm trying to thank for us, Gus how Ski right
like that, those are the only three now that seemingly

(15:04):
have a home and aren't leaving anywhere. What's the secret
to longevity in one place? Oh? Man, I wish uh
I knew, uh I could give you some insight to
a secret, But I think it's it was just being consistent, um,
you know, showing up every day on and off the field,
and trying to be the be a consistent uh you

(15:25):
know person in the locker room with the team, with
your teammates and uh you know going out on a
daily basis on the field and uh, you know, doing
your job at a high level and being able to
do handle you know, success and you know and adversity. Um,
you know, you you just kind of get connected with
with the people in the building and uh in the
community and all those things. And yeah, I think you know,

(15:49):
obviously you know athletics, you've seen it now. We've been
lucky enough here in Green Bay we've had a very
consistent you know front office and uh, you know head
coach and coaching of so I think that helps as well.
But uh, you know, in athletics, you're just uh you
get comfort level and you feel you know, feel good
and you have your you know, you have your guys,

(16:09):
and I think that, uh, that's definitely a part of
it as well. So um, now you look at the
places that you mentioned the guys who have longevity. Uh,
that's probably a big factor of it as well, is
is having a comfort level with uh with the people
in the organization, coaches, front office, um, you know, etcetera.
They're just um, you know, trusting and knowing that that

(16:33):
we're gonna do our job every day, making them making
them helps to write like you know, like you still
you do have to there is other things important on
the continuum, but making them helps. I remember, I think
it was your first, your first preseason game. Didn't you
have like a fifty two yard or against the Steelers?
Was that my misremembering my a long time ago? Impressive? Yeah?

(16:53):
Um so so so okay, so process if you can
like draw it like this is your first kick as
a and you're a six round draft picking. One of
the things that's interesting about the mercurial world of kickers
is a lot of times guys are better in their
second or their third spot, right because the pressure, especially
guys in the drafted, a lot of pressure on you
to perform. Um. Do you remember what it was like

(17:14):
to line up that first time fifty two yards away
Hinsfield kick a kick a field goal? I do, Yeah,
you know it. I was, you know obviously, and I
was in a battle for the for the job there. Um,
you know, had a had a good uh you know,
a good position since I was drafted, but you know
they put us through the ring or we I was
competing with Dave Rayner and I just remember, yeah, I

(17:36):
remember going out there for that kick and just you know, feeling,
feeling the freedom to just swing away and uh I
know that, um, you know whatever, whatever, you know, however
the chips were gonna fall, I'm gonna I'm gonna just
go out there and swing and make sure that, uh
that I hit a good, solid ball. And I think
at the time when I hit that fifty two yard
or um, you know, obviously it was preseason, but I

(17:57):
think I tied tied the longest a goal in Hines
Field or something like that. I think it's been it
might have been broken now, but uh yeah, that was
that was a big moment. And and you know, every
kick like that. And I remember the first game of
my regular season, my of the regular season there against
the Eagles that same same year, I I kicked the
fifty three yard or was my first field goal in

(18:20):
the NFL as well, Uh you know, uh there in Lambeau.
So that uh, those those are memories, you know, twelve
years later that you still stick with me, and um,
you know, I'll never forget those moments. And of course
you guys want a Super Bowl that year. So but
you so you've shown that pressure doesn't you know, pressure
doesn't really ratty you. So what what went wrong. Um well,

(18:43):
I'm just like, look, I'm not trying to make it
all Debbie Downer, but I do you know, how do
you how do you go from being one of the
most consistent kickers in the NFL to just having one
of those days against the Vikings where nothing goes your way? Yeah?
That's uh, that's what it felt like. Yeah, just nothing. Um,
it's nothing I've ever felt or you know, been been
involved in where I pick a line felt you know good,

(19:07):
obviously wearing a dome. So I'm just uh, you know,
take my steps on the line that I that I
felt good about, and uh it Honestly, as I look
at the film, all this stuff is like did I
when I was kicking from the left hash and I
think I was on the right hash? Like it was
did I have a bout of vertigo in that game?
I mean it literally all those as I as I

(19:29):
watch it, that's that's almost like the way I would
have to explain it, because it just felt like I
pick a line, I'd commit to the kick all the things,
and it just every strike, every ball was just slightly
off and uh and every bad possible thing that could
happen I went wrong. So Yeah, I I chalked that
one up to I've done this for such a long time,

(19:53):
I could have never imagined a game like that, and
uh uh it was it was by far, Yeah, my
worst performance. Uh gosh, even when I started sports. You know,
I can't look back at Peewee Sports and think of
a of a worse, worse performance that I've ever had.
Of course, Ace Van Truro, we learned that it was
about the laces being out. You know. I wish I could, Yeah,

(20:16):
I wish there were something it was something I could
dissect in the film that that was the case, But
that was it was a strange one. It was. It
was like, yeah, it was just a nightmare that that
just kind of kept going. So unfortunately I had a
lot of attempts that game, and uh I just kind
of kept snowballing. Okay, but but you you haven't you've
never thrown your holder or your long snapper under the bus.

(20:39):
You know. But but in reviewing, it was it all
you you know, honestly, you know the tough part there
is the last kick that I made. Um, you know,
we ended up kind of rushing out there because we
decided to go for a field goal. And they actually
didn't get a kicking ball and so we actually kicked
a quarterbacks ball that you know was laces straight back.

(21:02):
They got turned and I made that one. So um yeah,
you know it was. It's unexplainable, honestly, and uh, it's
one of those days that I was happy to be
done with and uh you know, obviously moving on a
week and two weeks now just to be passed. But
uh uh yeah it was. It was strange and um,

(21:23):
you know, I yeah, i I've never I've never put
anything over the top on anyone else. I know that
I have to do my job at high level all
the time. But uh, you know, it's uh, it was.
It was an interesting one, and um, you know, we're
we're continually working hard every day to make sure that
nothing like that ever happened. Okay, but if if you
write a if you write a script, it couldn't been

(21:43):
scripted any better to come down to a game winning
kick the next thing. Now, look, it was a it's
a twenty seven yarder, but are those are those really harder?
Are they easy? Like? I don't know that there's gotta
be something too, Like if you kick a fifty two yarder,
and you miss it. People like, well it's a fifty
two yarder, you know, twenty seven yarder when you had
the yip maybe the yips the week before. How amazing

(22:04):
is uh? You know that the turnaround in just one week,
you got another opportunity to show your team you belong. Yeah,
you know, like you said, opportunity. I was so thankful
to have that that chance and all the opportunities I
had in that game. A lot of big kicks, um,
you know throughout that game, and yeah, I mean I
had a fifty one yard or on that Monday night,
uh Monday night game that Uh, as I went out there,

(22:27):
I'm just like, well, this is kind of this is
kind of it. You better you know, just swing free
and hit the hit a good ball here, because uh,
you know these uh, these are the types of kicks
you had to make to to kind of get the
confidence everyone back, you know kinda al right, he's uh,
he's past it. And so knocking that one through was great,
and so yeah, I had confidence, uh you know, uh

(22:47):
going into that game as I you know, as I
how I approached it through the week, I felt really
solid with my preparation and then yeah, the twenty seven
yard or it's just just pick a line right down
to it and just just rip it, just hit it hard.
I felt like our time on it was really fast. Uh,
you know, operation was good, protection was good. They came,

(23:08):
they rushed really hard. I almost got hitting the legs,
you know, by some of the San fran guys. But uh,
but yeah, I knew as long as I just just
got it off and got it quick, uh, we'd have
no issues there. So I'm thankful for Aaron and uh
and DeVante on that one for getting us, getting us
as as close as possible. So so it made it
a chip shot. Yeah. And and Aaron, of course, being

(23:29):
a solid friend, put his arm around you the week
before and uh and and then you paid him back
with the game winner against the Niners. Doug got the shoe.
Fox Sports Trading Mason Crosby the Packers is our guests.
Graham Gono joined us, and he wasn't bragging because it
was in fact true. Apparently kicked a seventy three yarder
that was called back as a penalty. In high school.
You had what's what's your bragging kicker? Back in the day,

(23:50):
I kicked it from the parking lot story um, let's see.
You know, I I haven't kicked I haven't kicked seven
any one yard or seventy three yarder in a game.
But uh yeah, my my longest set I've kicked with
a snap hold operation. Um, you know just goofing around
before a game is is seventy one yards. So um,

(24:12):
you know did that a few times in college. Uh
here in Lambeau pre game, you know, I've stretched it
back out the sixty five. So that's uh, I think
if the right conditions were there, uh, sixty five would
be doable. Good good conditions this week in l A.
Those are you know, real grass field. It's it's not
a dome, although we know you and domes maybe don't

(24:32):
don't get along, Like give me the nasties playing outside.
I'm okay with Yeah, Mason Crosby joined this. Wait you're
now you're getting this custom cleat thing, right you guys.
You guys can't wear custom cleats in the game, but
pre game and then everybody tweets out some sort of
what's your custom cleats you wearing? Yeah, so this year
I'm gonna wear I'm gonna wear. A couple had the

(24:53):
Vince Lombardi cancer foundation has made made up of a
couple of pairs for me. And then my my mom
ms organization down in Georgetown, Texas is uh the Locker Foundation,
and there they she actually had students at the local
schools there through a competition and they they mocked up

(25:13):
a pair of cleats that I sent down, uh with
the Locker logo and all the stuff on it. So
I'll be uh, I'll be rocking on you know, both
those pairs at some point later on in this uh,
in this season. One of the things that kickers have
is they have the ability to to kind of be
wallflowers to see, you know, what's what's really going on
with the team. Take the temperature of the Green Bay Packers.

(25:35):
How would you characterize, um, kind of the mojo of
the team heading into this battle against the l A Rams. Yeah,
I mean you said the word battle. I mean I
think this team has shown that throughout this this year. Uh.
You know, obviously from the first game there against Chicago
coming back and getting that win. UM. Pretty much honestly

(25:57):
every game that we've been in just you know, we've
had some adversity, UM, some adverse situations that we've had
to battle back from. And uh and find ways to win. Unfortunately,
some of those didn't go the right way. But you know,
I think this team has has the makeup and as
a chemistry to to just find a way to to
battle through adversity and find ways to to not let

(26:20):
it be overwhelming and get us down and um, you know,
you know, get into that hole. So I think our
our biggest thing is just trying to start fast, try
to get get on the field and get this thing
rolling a little bit quicker. Because our our second half
of games have have been exceptional. I mean, our our
two minutes stuff has been excellent. So we just need

(26:42):
to find that formula for that first half and early
in games. But uh, the week of work we're putting
in right now, it's exciting, and uh yeah, we're we're
excited to get out to l A and uh and
play a great team in the Rams and go out
there and have some fun and get get some eight
d degree weather and uh and get some sunshine. Yeah. Listen,
I hate to break it to you, tell me about

(27:03):
seventies seven, seventy six. Yeah. Yeah, So so I mean,
you know, and you're gonna eat some some block over there.
But hopefully you, and I think Greg the Leg might
be back as well, so it might be a Kickers
duel in the college. Seum Mason, thanks much for being
a champ, kind of walking us through your journey, and
more than anything, congratulations on getting back on track. Look
forward to seeing in l A this Sunday. Thanks for

(27:24):
joining us. All right, that's remember the locker and the
Lombardi Cancer Foundation. Two things he's wearing shoes for us,
his pregame cleats. Of course you also have um you
also have you know. I forgot to ask him, is
he's still online? You hang up? He's still one. I
actually have one more question. Is he gone? He's gone?
He played, but he played at See You Back When

(27:45):
and See You Boulder. And there's a lot of pregame traditions.
Last week I was at Clemson and they run down,
they touch Howard's rock. It's incredible. This year will be
at UH this weekend. I'm gonna go to Florida State.
They welcome in Clemson, Virginia Tech. I'm doing November seventeenth, Miami,
Virginia Tech and they gotta enter standman. Everybody bouncing around.
But but I think the best tradition is see you boulders.

(28:10):
You know what they have Ralphie, Ralphie the Buffalo, And
there's guys that they act like they're steering Ralphie the Buffalo,
but they're really just holding on right. Because if Ralphie
decides that he wants to be a right and just
take out an entire team of dudes, Ralphi, he is
gonna be a right and take out entire team and dudes,
no cowboy hanging, no fake cowboy hanging onto a rope

(28:33):
is going to stop him from doing so. Anyway, let's
get to Dan Buyer. Dan, your favorite college football pregame tradition. Yeah, well,
Clemson is is great. I have no idea. And how
they all stand on their feet running down that hill.
You're gonna see the jump they jump off. There's like
a middle ledge. They do a jump. I know, but
I mean running downhill is not easy. The you're Florida

(28:54):
State with the spears. You're gonna see that they with
the chief seminar and no it's the chief's name, I
I forget. But that's a good that's a good pregame. Yeah. Yeah,
but I like I like Ralphie the best just because
it's the whole like, oh, chief osiola osceola right, osciola la.

(29:15):
That's a there's a couple of good ones right there.
I got some news from college basketball. Manhattan jury has
found two former Adidas employees and inspiring sports agent guilty
on all accounts of defrauding n C Double A schools
by paying high school basketball players. So you spending. Adidas
marketing boss Jim Gatto, former Adivas consultant Merle Code, and
that aspiring sports agent sports management exact, Christian Dawkins, were

(29:37):
found guilty by a jury of eight men and four
women after three days of deliberation. What's important here is
it's expected the n C Double A could also use
this testimony and evidence from the trial for their own
investigation into college basketball programs. On those same lines, Kansas
announce sophomore Sylvio di Susa will be held out of
action as the school reviews his eligibility. His name was

(29:59):
the topic of versation in that federal trial. Dodgers and
Red Sox Tonight, Game two of the World Series coveraget

Tone d Rio goes up against David Price, Bronco's release
quarterback Chad Kelly today, while the Giants stritter defensive lineman
Damon Snacks Harrisons to the Lions for a fifth round pick,
and some injury news in Minnesota. Vikings running back Dalvin

(30:21):
Cook could be without or could miss action through the
team's bye week. Excuse me through week eleven. He's got
that hamstring string. ESPN says the Vikings may just play
it safe with Cook because they've got these Saints coming
up in the week eight. Doug, Yeah, and of course
that's a rematch at last year's game, which had the
Minnesota miracle. But you know, it's it's one thing to

(30:42):
be coming off a hamstring which has been and and
he's also coming off in a c L from last year.
But you're also in the NFL and a game like
the Saints, you're going zero to a hundred. That's gonna
be a playoff caliber or playoff type of level, play
up five level. You mentioned Snax Harrison being traded, and

(31:02):
this is after Eli Apple being treated. We're still waiting
to see if Eli Manning will be traded. And I've
seen all over Twitter that not only are the Giants
waving the white flag, but that the Giants are tanking

(31:23):
right and that we've never seen this before in the
NFL between the Raiders and the Giants. Now, the Arizona
Cardins apparently are not trading Patrick Peterson. He posted a
note basically saying like he wants to be part of
the process to turn this thing around. He's upset at
the season, but but he's all in. So the Cardinals
are like, Nah, we're not gonna tank. We just suck.

(31:45):
We're gonna suck the old fashioned way, and we're gonna
start a rookie quarterback who's gonna make some mistakes behind
a putrid offensive line with a rookie play caller Environ Leftwich.
So they may tank without knowing or trying to tank
or getting rid of some of their long time, long
tenured stars. But it feels like it just feels like
to me that the the NFL is finally catching up

(32:10):
to baseball, is finally catching up to basketball. I told
you last year when the Houston Astros won the World
Series that it I know, you don't have to win
a World Series in order to validate what you're doing,
like the Oakland A's have never won a World Series,
but moneyball clearly works. Their salaries are a quarter that

(32:34):
of the elite franchises in the NFL and the me
in the end in Major League Baseball, they're playing in
a dump. Fans barely show up, although this year when
they started playing really well, they filled it up. And
yet they're still able to be competitive most years. So
moneyball works even if it isn't validated by a World

(32:55):
Series ring. But when you win a World Series, it
validates every sort of bit of the process us. And
so when the Astros tanked in two thousand thirteen, they
got a blue Tarski in their home ratings. The secret
to baseball is their home ratings, not the national ranks.
Home ratings are usually through the roof Houston. I know

(33:17):
they switched networks and whatever, but their local ratings were
a blue Tarski zero point zero color bars would get
a higher rating that you got in two thousands thirteen
because they were trying to lose games, and they loaded
up on draft picks and prospects over a three year
or year period or so. And now look at how
competitive they are. They made the playoffs three out of
four years, won the World Series last year, but last

(33:38):
year validated it and half them teams in the American
League tank this year. In the NBA, the Philadelphia seventies
six ers tanked last year. We saw the Grizzlies do it.
We've seen the Mavericks do it. We've seen the Suns
do it. Tanking is a big part of the NBA's
second half the season, as is parting ways with your
best with with your overpriced, over the hill assets that

(33:59):
some he else wants to take on. And that's what's
happening in the NFL. It took the NFL a couple
of years, but the Jets didn't tank last year because
tanking was a bad word. And though they still don't
talk about it, the Raiders are doing it, and so
too are the Giants. Another star NBA free agent on
the market this summer find out who. Be sure to

there's a little bit of a human element that's missing
from from analytics in terms of context. Is that a
fair take? Yeah, I mean, I think emotion that's the
kind of the point of analytics is to take emotion away,

(34:41):
but I think there is value in some emotion. Like
you just said, it's a little deflating when you don't
finish it off with it with the extra try. You know.
So there's people a lot smarter than me that, like
you said, they could point the percentages and all that.
I kind of say, look, score, touch, don't kick their point.
I want to just prolong the game as long as
I can, and I know I want to be aggressive,
but it just I don't know, it just doesn't It's

(35:02):
just kind of odd to me. I understand it. I
understand the percentage. I understand why you do that to me.
I just I don't know. It's not my it's not
my deal. I think it's one of those things. It's
like a guy using big word. It's like people who
use big words. Look, I understand that you're intelligent. I
get it, you're righter than me, but you don't have
to use big words all the time. That's if it's like, look,
we're smart, we have analytics department. I want to show

(35:25):
you how smart we are just for the sake of
showing you how smart we are. When you don't need
to do it. Yeah, I mean, I don't know if
it's an egregious mistake, but this is really kind of
a superfluous conversation that app state education on full on,

Understand what word you're using. Let's get to Dan By
what was it? Close? Sitting across the desk from him,
very close? Okay, very clear? Yes, all right, let's uh yeah,
the game today is real news. Fake news alright, real
news are fake news, Doug. Cardinals corner Patrick Peterson spoke

(38:00):
with the media today, saying that he thinks it's best
if you play somewhere else the rest of the season.
You are fake Yeah, you touched on it earlier. Peterson
admitted he was incredibly frustrated without the season has gone,
but added he was one committed to being parts of
the solution, right, I mostly committed. Like yesterday, I wanted
to be traded in today I don't. That's not really one.

(38:22):
That's not how works. But I get it. You know,
you thought you had a chance and all of a
sudden there's that deflating feeling that you're missing the playoffs
and you're going nowhere again. So I I understand it.
But the old idea like no, no, I'm all in, Well,
you weren't all in two hours ago. Real news are
fake news, Doug. The Broncos release quarterback Chad Kelly one

(38:44):
day after he was arrested on criminal trespassing charges, and
they're spectacular. Bonus question here. The Broncos release quarterback Chad
Kelly by chasing him out of team headquarters with a
vacuum hose. You are fake. Yeah, that's actually what got
him in trouble yesterday was when he was chased out
of that home he wasn't supposed to be in. But

(39:05):
Kevin Hogan now the backup to case Keenum in Denver,
Kevin and Cohogan, another former Brown, former Stanford guy, you
you know what to Stanford. Um, the the swag Kelly
thing is funny, it's interesting. Apparently like this is only
a tip of the iceberg, or this was the this
is that maybe this is more of the straw that
broke Let's use a different cliche, the straw that broke

(39:27):
the camel's back. Because he got into it with a
partygoer at von Miller's party. Then he tried to fight
one of the bouncers at von Miller's party. Then he
showed up in some apartment sitting next to a lady
on the couch, mumbling incoherently. And the reports are he
wasn't drunk, so whatever he was smoking, he got the
bad stuff like it might be legal in Denver. But man,

(39:47):
that made him incoherent and cost him his job. Real
news are fake news. Former NBA Commissioner David Stern gave
high praise to then Hornets and now Pelicans GM Del
Demps for the way he handled the vetoed Chris Paul
to the Lakers trade. That sounds like you are. Stern
told s I that they needed a veto the Chris
Paul to the Laker trade because Dell Demps was a

(40:08):
lousy GM. I'm paraphrasing, but Stern to s H, I added,
Dell Demps is a lousy general manager. None of those
players are currently with the team anymore, and he may
lose Anthony Davis end quote. He was talking about the
hall that they got by training them to the Clippers.
He also talked about not liking the deal that would
have sent Paul to the Lakers. I remember correctly, though,

(40:30):
Lamaro got sent to Dallas right and Pau Gasol was
going at the time. Do you uh Houston wasn't Houston? Um? Yeah,
David Sarn has always been a guy that people love.
He always says the right thing. He's a terrible d M.
It was a terrible deal, and yeah, but that was

(40:51):
the deal that was made. That was the deal that
wasn't made. Real news are fake news that teams around
the NBA field, the Celtics are apprehensive in signing Kyrie
Irving to a long term deal after the season because
of his injury history. That sounds like real news and
spectac Yeah, this is an a Celtics thing, But ESPNS
Brian Windhorse says other teams in the league think that

(41:11):
the Celtics may get to the point of being apprehensive
considering Irving's history and because there's well a lot of
time between now when when free agency hits. Yeah, well
we'll see, I mean, and the fact that he just
kind of knee jerked I'm gonna stay, does perk up years? Like,
wait a second, why would he want to stay so bad?
Unless he knows something we do not. Time will tell um.

(41:34):
He has had a litany of injuries. And remember the
one that he missed so much time for when the
playoffs were last year was not a new injury. It
was the old injury when his kneecap split in half
against the Warriors in the in the finals four years ago.
But the screws got infected and they think they got
it in time. But if they didn't, he'll never be

(41:55):
the same. So I guess we'll see. Side is game
time on the Duck Gottlieb Show, So we'll see. We'll
see obviously didn't play well, asn't played well at times
this season. You go back to the first game of
the year's two or four team, but he finally kind
of got it go and shooting the basketball. But they
lost to the Orlando Magic, which was a surprising loss.

(42:16):
That was probably his best game of the year. We'll see.

What Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? Do Do
Do Do? Do Do Do? Dude? So apparently Chris Paul
and Rondo don't like each other. This is a poorly
kept secret that uh came to a head last week

(43:02):
when the two got in a fight on the floor
at Staples Center in the Lakers home opener against the Rockets.
Punches were thrown, suspensions were handed out, and then yesterday
Rondo went UH went back in. This is the only
time I'm going to address this. I had a mouthpiece
of my mouth. I was exasperated because I was about

(43:22):
to tell him to get the blank out of here.
Look at my body language, my hands in my hip.
I turned away for a second. I look at Eric
Gordon and Mellow in the video. If they saw me spit,
they would have turned their face up or something. They
would have had a reaction. Of course, the NBA went
on his side, him being Chris Paul and I got
three games and he got to. Everyone wants to believe

(43:45):
Chris is a good guy. They don't know he's a
horrible teammate. They don't know how he treats people. Look
at what he did the last year. He was in
l A, trying to get trying to get to the
Clippers locker room. They don't want to believe he's capable
of taunting or igniting an incident. He comes out and says,
I spit, and the media sides with that. Y'all are

(44:07):
playing me with these tricks and these mind games and
tampering with the evidence. Ain't no way I intentionally spit
with my body language the way it was. I was. Now,
whether he intentionally spit or unintentionally spit back and to
left was there. A second spinner was Roger mcdowells. There

(44:28):
is video that appears to show him spitting on Chris Paul,
or spittle coming out. You know that there is that
if if all of a sudden some spit comes out
of your mouth and lands on another person, you usually
go like, oh, my bad, right you almost It's almost
like slow motion when that happens. You You you say

(44:48):
something and you overpronounced the word, and it's in the
air and you see it like old good land on them,
and there's like bush more, My bad, sorry about that,
My bad, My bad. He also didn't say that, so
there wasn't an emittance of unintentional spit. But he said like, look,

(45:12):
what do you mean this spit? Everybody thinks he's a
good guy. He's actually a really bad guy. And of
course we want to believe Chris Paul is a good
guy because Chris Paul has those really funny state farm commercials. Right,
what if both of these things are true? Because the
idea that Rondo is a better teammate. When Rondo quit

(45:33):
on the Mavericks, when Rondo essentially got run out of Boston,
he was the one guy who when they had the
Big three, was like, Hey, how come nobody talks about me?
He didn't endear himself to the Celtics. He didn't endear
himself to the Mavericks. A matter of fact, they cut
him out of the playoff shares. He spent one year

(45:55):
in Sacramento, which it was basically being out of the league,
like that's basketball Siberia. When he was in Sacramento, that's
basically saying I don't have a job anywhere else. I'm
gonna take whatever I can. And last year with the
Pelicans or you go. You go to his year with
the with the Bulls. He wasn't great with the Bulls.
He played exceptional in the first two playoff games. They

(46:17):
took a two games to non lead when Isaiah Thomas's
sister had tragically died, remember that. Then he got hurt
and the Celtics came back. Then he goes to the
Pelicans and he has an okay year as a backup.
It gets a start in the playoffs and they beat
the Trailblazers and he gets a ton of the credit

(46:37):
for it. I'm not gonna sit here and tell you
Rondo is not a good player. But this is basically
what it is. Chris Paul believes, knows in his heart
he's a better player than Rondo, but he never got
the opportunity to play with the players that Rondo has
gotten to play with, like KG Ray Allen and Paul Pierce,

(47:00):
And so he's jealous because in order to consider yourself
an all time great, you gotta win a championship. And
last year his body let him down, has let him
down before. And oh yeah, by the way, he's played
with the likes of the Hornets before they were the Pelicans,
and with the Clippers essentially to expansion franchises, considering where

(47:23):
they were when he got there, and he's made them
a viable playoff team, which in reality is just as
good or close to as good as winning a championship
with a loaded team. So of course he's just jealous,
and Rondo's jealous or Chris Paul because he's like, look,
I want a championship, and because I'm not, because I'm

(47:44):
not uh loving towards the media, I don't get the love.
That's what he thinks. I actually liked this. This is
really how the world works. I like to cheer for
other people who I really like in this I should
I friends all over this profession, radio, TV play by play,
side analysts, side talk show host, you name it. I

(48:07):
have friends. I also have people that I feel like
I'm competitive with. And there's some people that I don't
particularly like. And there's some people that I can tell
you I'm openly jealous of because they've gotten opportunities that
I feel like I'm better than them. I have no
doubt that it goes that way for me. You know,

(48:30):
I've gotten some incredible when I when I stop and
take stock, like I got some incredible opportunities. I'm doing
the Final Four and having my own TV show, and
I have my own radio show, doing an NFL game,
I guarantee there are thirty people who have who do
TV or radio nationally or like, why is Gottlieb doing

(48:55):
an NFL game on sidelines? Right? Well, what why would
you put him on sidelines? He does radio, he's got college,
he's a basketball guy. My answer would be, I interview
people for a living every day for fifteen years, Like
I'm around sports, we talk NFL mostly in national radio.

(49:17):
Why not? But I look, if you are if you
want to take the negative route you can, and this
is in my business. They say everybody hates everybody, and
that's really what it is in that business. Maybe it's
not everybody hates everybody. Maybe there is, Uh, there are
some friendships and guys generally like each other that they

(49:40):
play with, that they compete against. But I can tell
you that everyone I know, in any business they're in,
they have a rival or a nemesis, somebody they just
they don't like. I don't like that guy. I don't
like that guy, And I'm okay with it coming becoming public.

(50:04):
It makes it more intriguing. He makes it more interesting.
These two teams are gonna play against each other, and
they both have baggage. Especially Rondo has baggage. You go
back to when he left Kentucky, there was all kinds
of rumors about stuff with his teammates. There's been rumors
in the NBA as well. Why can't Rondo Rondo, who
plays a style which you would think all his teammates

(50:25):
would like him. He's a pass first and past second
point guard who used to play tremendous defense. Now he's
just good. He's fine. He's a little bit, he's older,
he's had injuries, not nearly as good. It's more on reputation.
But the fact is that rondo skill set should be
one that guys would love to play with. And just

(50:47):
like he can point out, not everybody liked as like
playing with Chris Paul, a lot of people haven't liked
played with RICHIOND. Rondo. You know, what if both of
these stories are in fact true. What if they're both
really tough to play with. What if they're both not

(51:08):
great to people around him? And what if some of
that perspective is based upon who's relating the story. I
can tell you this, there are people, there are a
few people I've worked with who would say that dudes
tough to work with because I'm demanding whether I don't
necessarily walk into a meeting and demand that you know everything,

(51:31):
but if you're in a I'll never forget this. Jay Williams,
for example, who in his book said he wanted to
punch me when we will walk off set together because
his perspective was I was trying to make him look bad,
when the truth is when he got the job, he
wasn't doing the work, and he admits is such in

(51:52):
the book. One doing the work didn't know names, of guys,
didn't really know storylines, didn't watch the games, was busy
hanging out, having a good time, and just kind to
winged it. And when you get into debate format, the
way I learned to debate was, you know, find the mistake,
and the argument becomes the house of cards. And then
sometimes it wasn't even a debate, which he would flub

(52:13):
a name and me and the host would try and
figure out who's going to clean it up, and how
are we going to clean it up nicely so that
we don't make j look bad. So some of it
is an internal insecurity knowing you haven't done your job,
and if he gets pointed out, you are mad that
somebody else knew you're not doing your job. Now, he
came around in the book to say that, you know,

(52:33):
he looked up to me, and that it made him
work harder and made him totally buy into the business.
And I actually always thought he was quite good. And
it's really hard to go through what he went through,
not knowing that he had a prescription pill problem, not
knowing that how badly he wanted to play, or how
bad his body was hurting him, Like I didn't know
any of these things. I just knew. We were there
talking about basketball, and sometimes the dude would make a

(52:55):
mistake and we try and clean it up for him
because we were trying to be good teammates. And he
may have thought I had some inherent jealousy of him
because he played a duke of won a national championship,
and I would to this day think that he had
the opposite in terms of jealousy, thinking I was trying
to make him look bad because there's this memory gap

(53:18):
that you have when you've played professional hoops that you
don't know a bunch about basketball, that this is business,
and so I have though I don't have anybody who
I don't go to sleep at night having hate you
for anybody, I'll admit I asked some jealousies of people.
There's people who get opportunities that I wish I got
that I think I deserve. Now my how it It

(53:38):
makes me work harder, And that's what I tell my kids. Hey,
it's okay to be jealous. It should make you work harder.
But that's all this airing of grievances is. Robert Woods

When you know you were going to the Rams after

(55:30):
You know, first thought, you know, thanks for having me
on Doug, But just the free agency period looking at teams,
UH have you know, few few teams to choose from
looking at the Rams. I looked at uh Jared golf course,
you on quarterbacks number one pick Uh stood tall in
the pocket they have the arm Um hadn't really had
a chance yet. And you looked at what Giry done

(55:51):
in the backfield, and then just some of the pieces
that they were adding on. But the main one was
just a head coach move hearing what do you uh
did in Washington? Um? With the control he had, the creativeness.
A lot of players and coaches vouce for him, UM
saying you know he's a you know, true genius. He
really knows the game. And then just come out and
just trusting it and uh coming out here and actually

(56:13):
playing out exactly you know how how I thought, you know,
with a great coach Jared pan and Ill was number one,
uh quarterback and uh just getting this high powered offense
rolling again. Was there ever, was there a moment to
which you totally bought in, you know because you heard
about it and people talked about it. Was there a
moment you're like, all right, this dog will hunt, this

(56:34):
is the place for me? Uh? Probably? Uh, First off,
you know, just throwing with throwing with Jared, My first
time throwing with Jared, I knew he had the arm
um to lift the ball nice and nice and easy
and right in the pocket. Um, so jfin and justin
shirts and T shirts, I knew Jared had an arm
And then just coming coming to this offense, learning the

(56:54):
offense and then seeing the transition from O T A
S and training camp, just mcveigh's transition, learning his players,
learning the guy and coming back with a whole new
twist of his offense like that that kind of fed
off of us. I think just him being a mastermind,
being creative, always thinking of new plays and ways so
I attack these. It shows, Uh, how we how we

(57:18):
practice in the shows on Sundays when we play how
do you fight off complacency, Like right now you're seven
and oh and I know polls don't matter, but there's
not a there's not a human being alive that dozen things.
You're not the best and most complete team in the
national football Like obviously you know you've had some issues,
injuries at a kicking position, a couple of other injuries.
But you know it's not just that you have the winds.

(57:38):
You've beaten legit teams or teams good teams on the road.
How do you fight off complacency? Yeah, under understanding it's
a process. Understanding that it's it's clearly, uh, a daily
process to our success. Um, it's not just weekly. Um,
it starts in our daily preparation. We come in and

(57:59):
we work every single day, whether it's in the film
room and the waiver and we compete and uh and
just go out there and execute our game plan. The
biggest thing just um being ourselves. And you said, you know,
not many complacent. I think we all been in different
places on the other side of this thing. Uh, but
we had you know, losing records or just a battling

(58:22):
season and a lot of guys know you know, it
contains very quickly and Uh, you know it just really
it's it's a standfl every every team every week. As
a talent um, we have to be well prepared. Cooper
has been out obviously, so that changes your role. What's
that like for you when there's less options now you're
used in even more prominent position. Uh, just just work,

(58:45):
just finding works in this seeing you know, keep keep winning,
keep being productive at the offense, and find ways to
execute our game plan. Whether it's me playing in a
the slot position and playing outside, you know, we we
still have to execute our game plan. We we all
move around and as receivers in his offense. But just
this being dial in and still having the same goal
as a team and has to win and that's to

(59:07):
finish our driving. Robert Woods joining us on the Doug
Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio. That would be weird for you,
right or I don't know if weird is the word.
What's the word you would describe? You know, you play
at SC, you go away, you come back, and you're
playing in l A. Like when you were at SC,
there was no proteins in l A. So now there
is and now you're playing in the exact same stadium,
albeit partially redone. What's that like for you? Yeah, I

(59:29):
would I wouldn't say weird, I would I would say comfortable. Um.
I've been playing in that stadium, been going to that
stadium uh for for years uh almost probably probably a
decade or so. UM. But this this knowing that field, UM,
practicing in there uh in college from games to spring games. UM.

(59:49):
Having opportunity to come back as a bill, and playing
that same stadium, which I thought would be my last time,
and coming back in the ram, playing in that stadium,
play many many games in that stadium called lots of passes, uh,
in touchdowns. But I'll say the word is just just comfortable.
I think I play well. I feels like I'm playing
in my backyard when I'm there. All Right, you got
the all whites, you got the all yellows, you got

(01:00:10):
the traditional blue and yellow. Uh. Pick if Robert Woods
in charge, you get to pick the uniforms for some
of these big games packed this week, Saints, next week
Chiefs in Mexico City. What's what's the uniforms that you
think are the cleanest? Uh? Probably probably the throwbacks. I'll
go with the throwbacks blue and yellow. UM. I love

(01:00:33):
a helmet. We wear with with our yellows as well.
But I love the blue face man, uh to go
with the yellow horns. Um, that would be my combination. Yeah,
you know it's funny when they were here, I'm old
enough to I grew up in Orange County and when
they were here the first time, like I didn't like
those Rams uniforms, but now it's throwbacks. I love those.
And then the all whites are like the super super

(01:00:54):
way back throwbacks back to when they were the l
A Rams the first time. But it's it's weird how
what was once ugly as was super super cool. Yeah,
the exactly what you say. You know, those throwbacks are
these are you know, players want to wear their throwbacks
at the retros and because there's something you don't wear
as much, you know, you bring out some different colors
and I get to bring up some different cleats as well. Um,

(01:01:14):
give me something about golf that we don't know. Like
I met him before the draft, and we met him
after his first year, and like, look, he just seems
like a regular sort of dude. But there has to
be something behind the face mask in a game. Is
he secretly super competitive or is he always kind of
that chill, laid back guy. I would I would say both.

(01:01:37):
I think he is very laid back, He's always in control,
very confident. But I will say he is that Confederate.
I know he lines up and uh he reads the defense,
and I think he's very confident in our ability in
our plays that we could compete with anybody. Uh. He
loves his match up, he takes his his senses and
U but the biggest thing, he's aggressive any and the

(01:02:00):
boys at the same time. And I think that's a
good uh combination for our quarterback. You want one who's
aggressive and takes his shots and takes his match up.
But you want a quarterback who also was going to
lead and stay poised and matter of the situation, to
throughst the game. How different is it for you this year?
And by that, I mean you go back two years
ago and like you said, you were with the Bills,
you played against the Rams. People always thought they were

(01:02:22):
about a five hundred team. Last year, it could be
safe to say that you stuck up on people. This year,
everyone knew that the Rams were going for right, picking
up Marcus, picking up in Dominican, you know, making some
changes to really kind of go for it. You haven't
stuck up on anybody. Is it different this year than
last year in terms of the crowds, the level of

(01:02:42):
preparation from opponents? Is it different? Wo? I would say
so just just a little bit. Last year, Uh, you know,
we had a little street going and I remember you
know another player, you know, uh looking to the side
and in question my a like are we good? Like
you know, we were actually pretty good, you know. And
I would say from this year's transition is, uh, we

(01:03:04):
feel like we know we're good. We know our team,
we know our ability. But the biggest thing is this
year from last year is kind of drowning out all
that outside noise, outside factors and literally everything that we
talk about, everything um, our goals, our game plans, is
always about us, always about executing our game plan. We

(01:03:27):
go into the week where we know we match up
with great opponents, but we know like if if we
play our game and we execute our our game play,
our play, our best performance doesn't really matter what they
do on their end, because you know, we're a complete team.
We're gonna play as a unit and just just be
ourselves and play asfl So probably Guardina Sarah Robert Woods

(01:03:49):
joining us in the Doug Gottlips Show. Only l a
guys can answer these two questions. Team CP three, your
team Rondo? Oh seeing Ron? Though? Uh like Lake or
so like? So? Uh you gotta go around though? Okay,
well I mean but but but CP three did he
won with the Clippers. He didn't win at all, but

(01:04:10):
he won with the clip one dead of greater level
with the Clippers. Anybody? All right? How about this one?
Team Kobe or team Lebron? Uh? See seeing Kobe? Uh?
You know, happy happy Bron's here? Um, But you know
I grew up watching Kobe seeing the great and seen
the transformation from eight to four, um, seeing his grind

(01:04:32):
and just kind of seeing his whole career. You see
him being young Kobe Uh coming in you know, airball
on the shots, to come in hitting game winners with
three people on him. You've seen this process. You've seen
his grind. You always hear about the work that he
put in. Uh. Now with someone who I watched growing up,
So I would definitely go with a Kobe being briant.
All right, So you were the one who to faced
the mural. That's what that's what you're You're the one

(01:04:54):
who's like, no, wait, no, no, Lebron Murals. Now, let's
take Lebron invest in the game right now for sure?
All right, I don't remember Kobe missing two free throws
in the waiting seconds to ice a game. I don't.
I don't remember that. I like Lebron too, but I don't.
I don't remember that. Robert, congrats on the season so far,
good luck against the Pack, and we look forward to
talking in the very near future. Thank you. All right,

(01:05:16):
this Robert Woods, Guardina Sarah usc l a Rams, and boy,
the Rams have a high powered offense, and you know
he's been their leading wide receiver I think four of
their seven wins. No, it's always Cooper Cup was the
favorite target for a long time. It feels like Robert
Woods is kind of slowly wrestling the conk a little
bit away from Cooper Cup. Let's get you to Dan Fire,

(01:05:38):
who's our favorite wives. He's our favorite target, target of heat,
target of jokes. We make fun of him all the
time when the micro off and behind my back, it's
all good Team Kobe, your team Lebron, Dan oh, Lebron.
I was never a Kobe fan yu team Team Rondo
or team CP three. Um, I go with Rondo, Team

(01:05:59):
Rondo on this one. I like, I just like a
Rondo doesn't uh. He stands up to star players, you know,
did it whether at their opponents or his teammates. He's
you know, I just yeah. So team Rondo, Rondo and
Team lebron Um Red Sox Dodgers Team Red Sox. No,
I'm just kidding, just kidding. John Robins. Tonight, game two

(01:06:21):
of the World Series in Boston, Red Sox up one
game to the uncovered John Fox seven thirty Eastern Time.
David Price on the mound for Boston, hung and Rio
pitches for Los Angeles. The Broncos release quarterback Chad Kelly
one day after he was arrested on charges of criminal trustpassing.
Cardinals corner Patrick Peterson tweeted out that he intends to

(01:06:41):
Following reports that he wants to be traded, Peterson said
he was incredibly frustrated with how the season has gone,
but he's committed to being part of the solution. Giants
traded defensive lineman Damon Harrison too the Lions for a
fifth round pick snacks. Harrison now going to Motown. Vikings
running back Dalvin Cook still dealing with a hamstring strain.
He SPN says the team could keep him out through

the team's by week and Week eleven. Vikings have the
Saints coming up on Sunday, while the Jets placed running

And not only could it be season ending, it could

Manhattan jury found two former Datas employees and a sports
agent guilty on all counts of the frauding n C
double A schools by paying high school basketball players. The

(01:07:44):
verdict is in in the college basketball corruption trial guilty
on all counts, okay, But the more interesting part is
in them in the statement made uh do you see
this uh from the prosecutor. If the universities had known
about the defendant secret pay means they never would have
issued those scholarships. Well, that's the case. Like the the

(01:08:08):
schools consider the victims. Yeah, like they're the ones that
are hurt. Yet now the n C double A can
take all of the evidence, all of the testimony, through
their own investigation and find out how much the schools knew,
and they could be penalized. That is simply amazing, simply
simply amazing. Um. Look, it doesn't mean that I think

(01:08:31):
that all of those coaches knew, right, there's a they
want plausible deniability and look, I don't know. You don't
want to tell me, I don't know, I don't know. Fine,
just get it done, like that's what they tell guys,
Just get it done. Can you help me? Get it done? Good?
Get it done? Take care of him. They use vague

(01:08:52):
terms like get it done and take care of him,
And that's what actually happens. But the idea that if
they had known, I do think there are some schools
and it really it reads really stuffy, right, It reads
really not presumptuous, It reads very very pompous. Way. There

(01:09:13):
are some schools that they wouldn't pull the scholarship offered,
but they knew the kid had his hand out, was
demanding and was making money. There are some schools that
be like yeah, and I actually think there are some
schools that did know, that did back away, or that
suspected and back away. But the idea that the scholarships
wouldn't be offered, oh, that's a hard one for me.

(01:09:35):
The Giants are in full tank mode. Of course. The
first rule of tank Club John Ramos is don't talk
about tank club. The second rule of tank Club Ryan
Music is do not talk about tank club. So you
will never hear the the Giants or the Raiders talk
about tank Club. On the other hand, there's Eli Manning

(01:09:56):
who says the exact opposite of what he really means. Right.
Remember Eli didn't really have a problem with not starting
last year. That was the public sentiment. The private sediment
was you kidding me, You don't want to let me finish,
find I won't start. You would try to embarrass me
and make it look like I'm holding onto the streak.
I'm gonna embarrass you. Eli Manning never said he didn't

(01:10:19):
want to be a San Diego Charger. He just said
all the right things. But behind the scenes it was
known Eli Manning would never be a San Diego Charger.
Here's Eli Manning on w f A NN in New York.
I haven't thought about the trade scenario. This organization is
the only team I've I've ever played for and and
the only thing I know, and and I love the

(01:10:40):
New York Giants, So starting to imagine being within another organization,
So I having not thought about it, just my focus
is trying to get a win for the Giants and
get prepared to play this next game and see if
we can just turn things around and and you know,
give herself an opportunity. My feeling is this with Mike Francesa. Okay,
the way in which Mike gets Alex Rodriguez, who gets

(01:11:02):
cut by the Yankees, to walk over and do an
interview and he has a weekly deal where he has
Eli Manning on. Eli knew that question was coming, that
question was vetted, that question was cleared. Eli. You know, hey,
everybody knows this, but you know, I gotta ask you

(01:11:23):
I'm gonna have to ask you about being traded is
the only thing, the only organization I've ever known, and
saying I I will never all you have to say.
If you don't want to be traded, then you know
what you say. I don't ever want to be traded.
Don't ever trade me because I will not show up
to work. I'm a New York Giant. And he has

(01:11:47):
a no trade clause, so he all he has to
say is, hey, I have a no trade clause. I
have no interest in playing for a different team. That's
not what he said. Eli Manning said, I have thought
about it. Really, you haven't. You spent zero percent of
time talk thinking of it. I haven't thought a lot

(01:12:11):
about it would be reasonable. It doesn't invade my every moment,
it doesn't remed every moment of my thoughts. But it's
an unreasonable statement to say I haven't thought of it,
And it's a disingenuous statement to say, when asked about

(01:12:33):
being traded, you know this is the only franchise I've
ever played with. That's actually it's true, but it has
nothing to do with answering the question what do you
think about being traded? As the only franchise ever played for.
It's not what I'm thinking about and thinking about our
next game. And of course if it wasn't, if he
didn't feel like he had to ask the question and

(01:12:56):
he asked the question, there would have been the follow up,
would you allow a trade to a team like the Jaguars?
Would you or would you allow it a trade to
a team that looked like it was a playoff team?
You have a no trade clause? How open are you
to being traded? Not open at all? It's fair answer,

(01:13:19):
but that's not what was asking. That thought was answered,
I oh yeah. By the way, even if your penny
lie down, he is slithery, he's smart, he's not gonna
actually have r answered, which is what Odell Beckham should
learn from. And that was that was a lesson right
there in pr from Eli Manning, Inc. Say nothing, but

(01:13:42):
do so in a nice way. Derek Teter said nothing
for twenty years, twenty years and I can't, I can't.
You know. They have something that at weird ESPN. They
used to have this uh uh booking list or whatever,
and they have show notes. So when you get done

(01:14:03):
music after every show, you would have to send in
show notes of what happened in each segment, like each guest,
each topic, everything, you'd have to send it in. And
if you were so fortunate to book Derek Jeeter and
our boss Scott Shapiro, didn't steal him from Mike and Mike,
because that's what happens. Like it was pecking order, like
it's good guest, Like he's gonna come on Mike Mike. No, oh,

(01:14:24):
you got he's gonna come on Mike and Mike. So
the way I think the way it worked was Mike
and Mike was first, Dan Patrick was second, cow Herd
was third, and then I would get, you know, whatever
was was kind of left I would get like leftovers,
and then all the other shows like just fighting over scraps, right,
And so if you got Derek Jeter your your guest,

(01:14:45):
booker would send out show notes, you know, Derek Jeter
coming up and then Derek Jeter and it would and
it read so much better in the show notes than
it did when because he didn't say anything Booker's dream
Hosts Nightmare. I got Derek Jeter, who didn't say a
damn thing. That's how he maintained the status of being

(01:15:08):
Derek Jeter. Give him nothing, but do so in a
very polite manner. Tom Brady actually gives you a little
bit of something, but it's not much. It's not much,
because what's the winning for Tom Brady? You know what's
the wind? Free? Lie Manning? If he said, like, dude,

(01:15:28):
he kidding me? Can I play for Jacksonville in that
division with that team gotta be better than Black Portals?
Tom Coffin run the organization absolutely, but he's not gonna
say that. Instead, he's gonna answer smartly, I haven't thought
of it. This is the only organization I've ever played
for when he has a no trade clause, And if
he didn't want to go anywhere, if he wasn't open

(01:15:49):
to it, he would say, I'm not really open to it.
I'm a giant. I'll end a giant. If they want
to pull the plug, fine, but I'm not gonna play
anywhere else. He didn't say that. He didn't say that
for a reason. Skip Bayless, the Michigan Ken Wait for It,
beat Alabama, give you my thoughts. Be sure to catch

I want to ask you about one of your former teams,
the Jacksonville Jaguars. So they redo Blake Bortles contract because
he finally lives up to their expectations. What do you
do if he doesn't turn it around? Yeah, money talks

(01:16:32):
right now. So obviously this is from the owner down
as a directive. Get him on the field and let's
figure this out. I've been in that situation before. Rob
Johnson from Jacksonville come to Buffalo, gets the contract, gets injured,
Doug Fluti takes over, and then all of a sudden
we get to the playoffs with like, is Doug Fluti's
team right? Oh? No, because that money was already invested
to Rob Johnson. He had to start that game against

(01:16:54):
Tennessee Music City miracle rests history. We lose that game.
They're in the same position. Uh. The Jacksonville Jaguars is
trying to make sure that they get an r o
I on Blake Bortles problems. His confidence is shot once again.
He's going out there for throwing for sixty one yards
and no one believes in that position. That position is
not just by production, it's by inspiration. If you're Blake Borders,

(01:17:18):
you have to inspire others. If not, you have a
defeated team. And now it's affecting the defense. Look at
Jayala Ramsey out there. Now he's letting gods just catch
the ball on the left and right. If you missed

previously on Fox Sports Wonder Fox Sports Radio. We call

(01:18:00):
it Say on Undisputed this morning, that is with Skip
Bayliss and who else is on that show now, Uh,
Shannon Sharpe, Jenny Taft as well. Skip had this to
say about the one team he believes can take down

(01:18:20):
Mighty Alabama and college football. I told the great Joel
Klapp before this season started that I thought there was
one team that could beat Alabama. And the more I
watched that team, the more I believe what I told
you before the season started. I think Michigan has all
the components to beat Alabama. And I know Alabama with
two quarterback is flying as high as any college team

(01:18:43):
I can remember in all my years of watching college football.
They are dominating in ways I've never seen before. It's
over after five minutes every game he throws three touchdown
passes and it's just over. Michigan right now is number
one in past defense in college football. Look, I think
Michigan would give him a game. They have an incredible defense,

(01:19:07):
incredible defense. I don't know how much you guys watched
the Big Ten, but Brian the work. He is a
solid quarterback, a senior quarterback. I did pick that game.
Did pick Michigan correctly in that game, and the reason
was because the work. He was at eight interceptions to
go with ten ten touchdowns, so he's a turnover guy,
but he was five of five. Have never heard of

(01:19:29):
numbers like that outside of Rutgers in the Big Ten.
You go back to the week before that one and
they took on Wisconsin. Now I have less faith in
them at the quarterback position than I have in Lurkey.
But the fact is that was constant with their ability
to run the football, and they do have at least,

(01:19:50):
if not a great player, at least they have experience
at the quarterback position. When Alex Horneybrook but Alex Holly
Hornybrook was seven of twenty seven of twenty Here's a
guy who on the season has a hundred and forty
two point six quarterback rating, and against Michigan he was
seven or twenty, completing thirty of his passes, one touchdown
and two interceptions. It's crazy. Their defense is dynamic, but

(01:20:15):
but their offense, even with Shade Patterson, is still rather pedestrian.
Um hiis a good running back, they have decent wide receivers.
They're just not great outside the numbers. Do I think
they could give him a game? Sure? Sure? Do I
think they can beat Alabama? I think Alabama is just
way too productive offensively. You know, I saw this stat

(01:20:37):
where um Haskins from Ohio State through the ball over
sixty times this past week, sixty three times, and in
the last four games combined, that's how much too has
thrown the football asking through for over four h yards,
people like wellly through four hundred yards in this almost
the same number of passes. Twa Tavai logo has over

(01:20:59):
a thousand large passing like they're just a machine. So
could could Michigan give him a game? Yeah? Right now
Michigan or in Michigan, probably more so than L s U.
That all organically play out because Alabama takes on L
s U. But you know, L s U s unless
they beat Alabama, they're not going to college football playoffs.

(01:21:21):
I do feel like Alabama's the Michigan is a one
team with the defense to compete with Alabama. On the
other hand, the lack of competitiveness in the SEC makes
it a hard watch. It just does. It's It becomes
like watching the Golden State Warriors, like wake me up
and we get to the finals and they take on
the Celtics, doesn't it. It sure feels that way. We

(01:21:47):
haven't talked in a bit on the show. We started
with talking about the Dodgers, and I don't know that
baseball does this to me all the time. It seems
like baseball does this to me more than any other
sport in which I'm watching the guy, and he's clearly
pitching well, like Bias was last night. Comes in, there's
a runner on uh on second base, strikes one out,

(01:22:12):
walks and walks Martinez. Another strike out, and he looks
intentionally walks Martinez. Right, it's not like a ratic, it's
not like he was struggling. And remember even an intentional walks.
Now they don't throw four pitches anymore, which they should,
they should in the playoffs. That's a mistake because there
is the chance of a pass ball. But he intentionally

(01:22:33):
walks Martinez and he strikes. He goes, he strikes him
mount and and out out he comes. And Alex Wood
comes to the game the Red Sox, I mean, right now,
Alex Cora, everything he touches turned to gold. You know,
he puts Devors in the game, and Devor s hits
home run. So there is some confirmation Bias and giving

(01:22:56):
up the home run. But anyone who's watching that game
last night was like, why are you taking out And
my my response would be, that's not Dave Roberts doing
what he wants to do. That's Dave Roberts doing what
does boss wants him to do. And Andrew Andrew Freeman
came in from Tampa. Their analytics guys, and they're like, look,
we're living and dying by the book and they died

(01:23:17):
by it. Doug Gotlid show is brought to you by

(01:24:01):
Major League Baseball? The World Series Game one was exciting,
not necessarily in the ninth inning, but seventh inning, still
very much in doubt. Welcome in, We got a great
hour for you. Matt Holiday, seven time All Star, is
gonna join us in mere moments. We'll get his thoughts
on the first of the first game of the series,

(01:24:22):
which I don't think even though I would, I would
guess that he would agree the Red Sox seemed to
be the better team because we have no idea what
you're gonna get from David Price, and because of their
lack of or perceived lack of middle relief. Um, it
would most people would think, well, Red Sox win these

(01:24:43):
two games, it's over. I do think they win game two.
It puts the Dodgers in a bad spot considering the
Red Sox have one on the road and Yankee Stadium,
with the Yankees rarely lose, and of course they've won
on the road in Houston. But you have no idea
what you're gonna get from David Price. If it's what

(01:25:04):
he did last time out, well you're a good spot,
good shape. But if not, and then you get to
the middle, real leaf, which is a sore spot. And
Kimberll was good last night, But what about when it's
a high leverage situation. And oh yeah, by the way,
why even throw kimberl last night? What's the point? Why
would you use him? I will never understand that I

(01:25:27):
made this point last year with Kenley Jansen. Kenley pitched
in Game one of the World Series when it wasn't
in doubt Why let the Dodgers who don't see the
Red Sox, why let them see Craig kimberrill stuff. Maybe
to rebuild his confidence, but he pitched well last time out.

(01:25:47):
I would save him. So we got that to get to.
But more than anything, I'm interested in the seventh inning
where eurus uh uh yours gives up a hit, they
pull him for bias. Bias comes in, gets a strikeout,
intentionally walks. Martinez gets another strikeout and just looks dominant,

(01:26:16):
so Dave Roberts decides to pull him. Goes to Alex Wood.
Alex Wood's left hands to a right handed lefty lefty matchup.
Of course, the Red Sox match and go with the
righty and for almost do you have the cut? This?
This is what happens when Alex Wood makes the mistake
that essentially ended Game one. Check of the runners, the

(01:26:36):
one oh he swings it drives walk a left high
and Day five a wall god pre red hitch home
war noon Yes, get you a believer, have a Red Sox.
Late at eight to four, Edward o'noon yez comes in,
hits a home run and kind of that was that.
Matt Holliday joins us seven time All Star. I just
I understand the book. I got it. The book. The book,

(01:26:59):
the book which is analytics. Right, what was it last year?
The Yankees? We we were talking and people said, the
Yankees have like fourteen guys in their analytics department that
followed the team around. But look, you were raised on
a ball field, Your dad was a was a great coach,
your brother is a coach, and you've done this thing
for a long time. Doesn't gut Field tell you leave

(01:27:21):
Bias in? He's he's pitching. Well, yeah, and I think
that you know that you're gonna get the other matchup, right,
I mean, you're gonna pick Bias or against the uh,
Bias against the lefty, or or you're gonna bring in
Wood against the righty. And you know that you're gonna
get You're not gonna get the lefty lefty matchup because
you know what's on their bench. So to me, Bias

(01:27:41):
has pitched really, really well even in the regular season
down the stretch, and then the post season has been
pretty much unhitable. And he throws ninety seven and his
best secondary pitch is a change up, which is more
UH is tougher on a lefty than it is a righty.
So to me, Bias is just as tough of a
match up against a left handed hitter as he is
a right hand hitter based upon his secondary pitches. So, hm,

(01:28:04):
I was surprised. And as a hitter, you give me
a chance to face a guy that throws as opposed
to you know, guys throwing in the upper nineties with
a with a really good, really good changeup. I mean,
it's it's really a no brainer. As a hitter, he
face plus plus. Tell me if tell me if this
is fair as well. Look, I understand that you know

(01:28:24):
you have a book on guys, but not everybody is
the same every night. And you've seen buys and you
know that he was locating. You knew that he had
his good stuff, whereas you have no idea what Alex
Wood has when he comes out of the pen. I'm
not fearing the unknown. I know he's pitching well, and
so I know that that even if the stats tell
me to make a move there, you're getting a better

(01:28:46):
probability because he's relaxed, he's pitching the series already, he's
pitching the game already, and he's got his best stuff.
I totally agree, and I, like I said, I think
that he's he's pitched that well, well pitched that way.
The last you know, month and a half, he's I
don't know what the exact stats are, but I know
when we played him, uh, you know, in in that

(01:29:06):
last game, when you look at the stats, uh, for
the last three weeks of the season, he's has been
their best release pitcher. And that's better, you know, numbers
wives better than dances. So I don't I didn't see
any rush to get him out of the game. To me,
if he's pitching like he was pitching, he leaves him
in as long as you can because you're trying to
keep the game closed so you may have a chance
to pitch dances. In the last month. In the last month,

(01:29:30):
he's allowed one run and the only run it was
because he was charged to a run because the intentional
walk last night. In the last month, one run, and
he's only allowed three hits, I mean in fifty in
like fifties and you know, in excuse me, in the
last month, he's pitched about thirteen innings or so so uh,
and he's had a very very good year. But but

(01:29:51):
some of that is skewed because he was counting. He
got credit for the run on the on the on
the three run home run Matt Holiday joining us on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. What are your thoughts on Cora
using Kimberl, Like my my stances like, hey, they don't
see him, so why let him see him? Why? Why?
And and you and of course you're probably gonna have
to pitch tonight if they're gonna close things out, why

(01:30:13):
throw Kimberl? You know, I think the main reason is
is if he those are those relief pitchers are so
used to pitching often that you get these days, these
days off, and you know they haven't played in four
or five days or however long it's been. So these
guys are creatures that have it. They want the ball.
He wants the ball last night to get back out there,
to get that feel so that if he comes in

(01:30:34):
tonight in a one run game, uh, you know he's
pitched recently. I think for for command issues, especially somebody
like him. You know, he's got great stuff, but he
needs to be able to command his basketball to set
up his breaking ball. So for me, I think he
probably told Cora if hey, if there's any chance that's
getting me in the game. I need to pitch, and
those guys usually carry pretty heavy weight when your closer says, hey,

(01:30:56):
I needed any uh, you get your inning. So he
gonna be difficult to hit, no matter when they pitched him.
But there is something too, you know, seeing a guy
uh maybe once and and then you know those guys
that saw him last night come up in a big
spot tonight. I'll be slightly more comfortable having faced him,
you know, just the day before. What should what should
we as fans do with with the Kershaw thing? Right,

(01:31:18):
because it's not like he hasn't been good in big spots.
There's been some big spots against the Mets. A couple
of years ago. He was unbelievable in a must win game.
He was unbelievable against the Brewers. Going back to the
last series when he pitched seven innings after you know,
a bad game one, he comes back, comes back I
think in Game five of the series and outstanding and

(01:31:39):
then closes it out in Game six. But last night
he wasn't great, you know, he he wasn't. He wasn't
dominant in any way. What's the right weight from a
from a guy who's been an All Star and faced
him and gotten you when you were with the Cardinals.
You've got to him in the seventh inning. What's the
best way to look at the Kershaw thing? You know,
to me, he's different now than he was a few

(01:32:00):
years ago. I think that his margin for error now
is there's a lot less his velocity. I think you know,
he pitches around the ninety two mark his his slider
and it's got a little bit more of a cutter
action to it. Um. I don't think his margin for
a is as good as it used to be. So
to me, like, if his command is not really good

(01:32:21):
right now, and he's not using his breaking ball to
slow hitters down, and he makes mistakes over the middle
of the plate, they get they get hit hard. If
you're pitching at nine six, those balls get foul up
at something of miss through. I just think that that
right now, I would say that some of this hit
or missed uh good and bad is more based upon
you know, the command of of kind of I don't

(01:32:44):
want to say average stuff, because he's still got a
tremendous curveball and and still a really good slider, but
I think his stuff is backed up a little bit
to make it. He's much easier to hit now than
he was five years ago. But I I to tell
you the truth on on the year's past, it's hard
to say. I mean, I think he's and knowing him,
he's a tenacious competitor. Uh, he's everything he would want
as far as hard work goes. And I don't know.

(01:33:06):
I mean, sometimes those things are really hard to explain.
Why a tremendous Glaire is possibly one of the greatest
pitchers of all time, certainly of my era, um has
not had the same results, uh in the postseasons he's
had in the regular season. If it's sometimes it's hard
to explain. But um, and knowing him, I don't think
it's one of those things where it's a mental block.
But shoot, you never know. I mean, sometimes it gets

(01:33:28):
in our heads as athletes, and and uh it's hard
to get it out. Dodgers weren't sharp misplates and balls
in the field, and of course then you know, uh,
you give up a three run home run, so it
becomes what was a really competitive game, it becomes a four.
I want to ask you about that, the analytics thing.
Do you think that these managers like a Dave Roberts
that that in their heart of hearts, that's what they

(01:33:49):
want to do, or is that what their boss is.
That why they've gotten the job, and their boss is like,
this is what you're doing. And so they've kind of
to for lack of a better term, sold out to
being decide with analytics instead of their gut. Oh, I don't,
I don't know. I think that's a case by case situation.
I think that I think the managers in the in
the front office now, I think they meet more than

(01:34:11):
they ever have. I think the analytics guys, the general manager,
all the guy assistant general managers, and the manager. I
think they meet before every game and they go through
scenarios and they get the input of the analytics guys
and they talk about, well, this guy comes in and
face this guy. You know, the numbers say we should
bring this guy in, and you know, in this situation,

(01:34:32):
you do this and and so I think that the
relationship between analytics, general managers and managers is more of
a collaborative group effort now than it ever has been.
And I think that the managers are there. I I
just think that there's a lot less times where they
go off their gut now, and I think that that's
the way the gm s and the analytics guys would

(01:34:55):
tell you it's the best if you take the human
element out of it and if you just play it
by a by the numbers that you that's your best
chance of success. And I think that's part of some
of the part of the problem with the game today.
I don't love that. I don't like that. I think
there's a place for numbers, but I think that there's
a place for watching the game with your eyes and
going with your gut instinct. And a guy like Dave

(01:35:15):
Roberts who's played and managed and coached and seeing tons
of baseball where he could see something like that, uh
you know, maybe the bias thing and say, you know,
this guy's dominating. I don't care who they bat off
that against him. I like my chances, And so I
think that that's probably what you're looking at, Doug. I
don't know if some of these managers, uh you know,
sort of sell themselves to to these gm to get

(01:35:39):
the job. They'll tell them and they'll do whatever you
know they want him to do. And but I think
that you're looking at gms and and numbers guys having
big input to what goes on in these games. How
soon will you know if David Price has it tonight?
You know, I think you'll be able to see his
body language. I think your first inning, if you kind
of gets that mojo going again and get the crowd

(01:36:00):
into it, and he's got that good change up, that
was the best change if I think I've ever seen
him throw that last game, he's fit. Typically when I'm
facing him, Um, you know, you you kind of don't
really worry about the change that much, and he was
using it a lot and then it was really good.
So I think, you know, watching his change up and
then if he's able to locate his passball in on
all those right hand hitters set up that change up

(01:36:21):
down in the way, I think that that's a good
formulas he's able to locate those fissues. What's it like
to play in Fenway? It's awesome, great atmosphere, tremendous environment, Uh,
crowds into it. It's uh if you feel like you're
in coming old time warp of of being an old
time baseball where you know, it's just it's just a
really cool environment, especially now in the post. Yeah, it

(01:36:42):
feels like you should pull up like have the old
stirrups on, and we're like the knee high like you
always wear long pants. It feels like she goes like
knee high thing, you know, and then scoot around the
bases like Babe Ruth. Like it does feel like a
shot back in time. It's awesome. It's a great it's
a it's a great environment, but especially a World Series environment.
But you didn't like to remember you didn't like Dodger Stadium,
you know, especially with the white shirts. You like, like,

(01:37:04):
didn't like picking up the ball in the outfield. Yeah,
that's that's uh, it's uh, it's it's not a great
place to play the outfielder. Why. It's just it's the
seats are like yellow and it's hard to pick up
the ball. The lights are lower. Um, it's it's it's
it's a tough visual um for outfielders and it's just

(01:37:25):
it's just hard to see. Like you want a dark
as dark of atmosphere, dark of environment behind the hitter
to get your best read on the ball. And it's
it's like I said, that's the chairs are the color
of a rubbed up baseball. Yeah, I mean you would
you would you would know. Um, last thing, how competitive

(01:37:46):
you think this series is going to be? Well, I
think every time you count the Dodgers out, they seem
to find a way. And there's a lot of dynamic players.
They have a lot of guys that can take deep um,
so you never really count them out. I think the
Red sod for a much more fundamentally sound team. Um,
I think that they they I think they're the better team.

(01:38:07):
But I also think the Dodgers are very dangerous because
one through eight, Uh they could hit homers and and uh,
you know they get a walk and a single and
you know they're they're very dangerous at any point of
hitting as three run homer, which you know, and I'm
in a World Series. I think that that that kind
of thing is who Like I said, it's dangerous. But
if I had to guess, I would say the Red

(01:38:28):
Sox win and and but I don't know. I mean, I,
like I said, every time I think the Dodgers are out,
they find a way and they make it make it interesting. Well,
we'll see if David Price has the good stuff. He
has the good stuff, that's great for the Red six.
If not that we'll probably have a series Matt Holiday,
seven time All Star, four time Silver slug and a
friend of the show. Matty, thanks so much for joining us. Yeah. Thanks,

(01:38:50):

Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's start with what
we saw last and then dig back into Sunday on
Monday we saw. Let's start with the Atlanta Falcons. Matt

(01:39:58):
Ryan completes what eighteen consecutive passes, but watching a lot
of them, a lot of underneath stuff still and um
and you know, look, they had a two touchdown lead
and they end up kind of holding on for a win.
What's your assessment Granted against an inferior they're beating the
bad teams and their defense is still a wreck. But
what's your assessment of Matt Ryan year two in Steve

(01:40:20):
Sarkaesian system? I think it's somewhat similar to year two
in Kyle Shanahan's system. I think he has a much
more comfortable feel of the concepts and a lot of
the concepts are very similar. I can see that on
tape because those concepts that come from Kyle Shanahan are
really good and they work. So I think he has
a real good comfort level. What I think you get

(01:40:41):
as a quarterback with the second year Doug with a coordinator,
and you can probably appreciate this is you understand what
plays he's going to call and given situations, because that's
what's different with coordinators. And and keep in mind situations
that the coordinator is not choosing from fifty plays. If
it's third and six plus meaning third and long, you

(01:41:02):
know that there's five plays that he's choosing from. You're
getting one of those five. That's what you've practiced, and
so now you have a better feel for which of
those you're going to get in a given situation at
the given spot on the field. All right, let's go
to the other side, the New York Giants, UM and
how they were executing. We're getting a better and kind

(01:41:23):
of deeper look a chance to watch Eli Manning. There's
talk of potentially trading him. Um, what's your assessment of
how Eli played against that that Falcon's defense. Well, obviously
that's a Falcon defense that is missing pieces. But I
thought Eli for the most part, played well in that
game and looked better than he has in recent weeks.
And a lot of that had to do with his accuracy.

(01:41:45):
He has really struggled for much of this season. Doug
with his accuracy with his ball placement, which is the
better term. And I think as a quarterback, you can
be smart, you can do everything right, but if you
can't throw the ball where you want to, then you
don't really have much at all. And I thought he
made some more difficult throws in this game and they
were accurate. Great Costell joining us in the Doug Otlip

(01:42:06):
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, you look around
the National Football League and there's some young quarterbacks that
we're trying to kind of figure out. Let's let's go
to Mitchell Robinsky. He really really struggle in the first
half against the Patriots. Uh, they were down a couple
of touchdowns and to get some soft defense, he got
the percentage up. What's your level of confidence that Rabinsky

(01:42:27):
can ultimately be what the Bears want him to be. Well,
that's a relative question. I mean, obviously they would love
him to be great, but I think in the context
of that offense with Matt Naggy, I think that he
will be a very efficient player. As time develops, I
think that they'll figure out what kind of back that
they ultimately feel fits their system best, because that system,

(01:42:50):
obviously is the same one they run in Kansas City.
My guess is they don't see Jordan Howard ultimately as
that guy, and Tarik Cohen is not big enough to
be sort of an every down type back in that system.
So I think that's a piece that they'll look for.
But I think that true bisky is he's developing kind
of the way I would have expected, the way we

(01:43:12):
used to think quarterbacks developed, where they played for a year,
they struggle a bit. Now he has a new coaching staff,
but he's now, you know, slowly developing. I'll have ups
and downs, but I think he'll become an efficient quarterback
within that system. Adam Dealing is setting the world on fire.
I mean, this is as remarkable story as I can
think of it, and for people who I think most

(01:43:33):
people know that he was undrafted, but it's more than that.
He was basically like an NFL walk on right. He
was invited to a camp and then he got it.
Then he got that wasn't even camp camp, just a
free agent camp, and from there you know, now he's
been dominating the nation foot footbaball league. How does this happen?
Is it? Is it Cousins? Is it Dealing? Is it

(01:43:53):
the offense. How has he been so effective? Well, he
did a lot of this last year, just the numbers
weren't quite what they are now. Uh, He's a terrific
route runner. He's very nuanced, he's very refined. He understands
versus man coverage, how to set up corners with his
his route stem, how to create separation at the top
of the stem. These are nuanced elements to route running.

(01:44:15):
He's very, very good at that. Plus, he's far quicker
than people probably might think, and he's faster than people
might think. I remember studying him in great detail a
year ago, Doug, and he was winning vertical routes on
the outside. He was getting on the top of NFL corners,
and I don't think many people thought that he could
make those kinds of catches. Yeah, it's it's it's just

(01:44:36):
a stunning thing to watch his level of consistent dominance. Um,
let's go to Jacksonville. Everyone's talking about the quarterback position,
but they have offensive line issues as well, and they
don't have Leonard four net Um. You know, you were
in danger of losing the locker room here as they're
starting him, they're having some infighting. Is Blake Bortles fixable,

(01:44:57):
I would argue no, But I would also argue that
they know what Blake Bortles is, and I think that
their team is built to almost hide Blake Bortles, and
it's the other things that are the issue now. He
is he playing well, No, he's very erratic. He was
erratic last year. The difference this year is he's turning
it over a little more and that's a huge problem obviously.

(01:45:18):
But they know what he is. Even the organization knows
what he is. They're a team that's ultimately built on
the run game and there's no Leonard four net right now,
so the run game is not really a factor. And
a great defense, and the defense, while some of the
numbers are good, Doug, it's not playing quite to the
level it was a year ago. And it's not creating turnovers,

(01:45:38):
and that's a big factor. When you create turnovers as
a defense, and I continue, you can't count on that
from year to year, then it changes everything. So those
are two areas that their team is essentially built on.
It's not built around Blake Bortles. He's purely a complementary
piece at best. Andrew Luck's got twenty touchdown passes on
this season, and this is a year in which you

(01:46:00):
go back a month before training camp and he said, like,
I ain't even picked up in NFL. Right, I'm picked up.
I haven't picked up and thrown the duke. They're very,
very slow with getting him back, Um, And look, he's
always been a high turnover guy. They don't have much
talent roundhim, although Marlon Mack has been an absolute godsend.
You know he's hitting Eric. He brought in t Y
Hilton and Chester Rogers a bunch. Are you willing to

(01:46:22):
to say that Andrew Luck is back to that form
that he had before he began the declined due to
injuries pretty close. They don't throw the ball down the
field deep a whole lot. Now, of course, p Y
Hilton missed a number of weeks. Um, I would say
that he's somewhat of a high turnover guy because throughout
his career he's thrown a ton of passes. And it's
not a defense of him. I'm sure he would tell

(01:46:43):
you that he shouldn't throw that many picks. But I
think the key thing this past week was two things.
Number One, their defense was able to hold the opponent's
offense Granted it was the Bills and they may not
be able to do that every week, but that the
game was such that he threw less than twenty five
passes dug a problem in today's NFL. And you and
that's the way it is with let's say someone like
to Shawn Watson as well, is these quarterbacks shouldn't be

(01:47:07):
dropping back forty five or fifty times. That's that's problematic,
and particularly when you don't have a big time offensive line,
you shouldn't do it anyway, but it gets exacerbated when
you don't have an offensive line. Uh And and the
um colts is old line is a work in progress,
and the Texans old line is not very good. So
you get these quarterbacks that dropped back too much, and

(01:47:28):
bad things will eventually happen. Um, all right, what about
Carson Wentz in the Philadelphia Eagles only three of twelve
on third down? They did dominate in times time of possession,
but he was sacked four times and three of three
of twelve on on third down. I know you're dealing
with the backup at running back running smallwood out there,
and you only had thirty two yards, but what by

(01:47:49):
your estimation is wrong? With that Eagles offense, Well, I
think they're lacking a whole lot of talent. First of all,
I mean, they've got a great tight end in Zach Ertz,
They've got a good white out in al Sean Jeff,
not much else. They've not run the ball this year
anywhere near as well as they ran the ball a
year ago. Uh. We did a study of their third
down since Wins has played, and I think their average

(01:48:11):
third down has been over eight yards. So that so
we can talk about their their lack of third down conversions,
but not many teams will confer third downs when it's
third and eight plus on a consistent basis. I don't
think Wins is the problem at all. I think it's
a team, um who's old line has not played as
well as a year ago. They can't run the ball
particularly well, and they really do not have a lot

(01:48:32):
of weapons other than that. Mrs Lincoln, how is the
show right there? You go? Yeah? Yeah, Um you mentioned
the Texans and DeShawn Watson. We're gonna see you tomorrow
night on on Thursday Night Football. Um, what's your take?
You know, last year they kind of set the world
on even with the bad offensive line. They kind of
set the world on fire. Uh this year they they
thankfully Frank Reich went for it in his own territory

(01:48:54):
and that kept him from a tie, which which would
have been a disaster. Instead, now there there four and
three in first placed in their division. What's your take
on Watson after watching him on film. I like Watson,
but I think that it's they've got to be careful
with how much they ask him to drop back. And
again this week they played Jacksonville who didn't score, and
he only threw twenty four balls. And not that you're
going to throw twenty four every week, Doug, But I

(01:49:16):
think it's with their online and with the fact that
Watson does have a tendency to leave the pocket prematurely
and to drop his eyes and read the rush. The
more you drop him back, the more problematic it becomes.
So I think he's working through some things. But I
like the way he throws it. He will play from
the pocket, but the more you ask him to drop back,
the more you make that difficult. So we'll see where

(01:49:39):
that goes. But I really like him as a quarterback.
I think I'll end up being a very good player.
Great stuff. Greg Coast cell NFL films joining us every
week here on the Doug Gotlip Show. Greg, thanks so
much for your time. We know you're really busy. Appreciate it. Doc, Thanks,
pleasure is all ours. This gets you to dan fire
find out what else is going on the room. Any
giant's been traded, any raider has been trading in the
last and not in the last twenty minutes. Just earlier

(01:49:59):
today of course the snacks Harrison. Yeah, that was the
only deal that we've got right now. But I expect
things to be different between now and Tuesday at four
o'clock Eastern time, when the NFL trade deadline comes up.
There were moves made in the NFL today. Broncos released
quarterback Chad Kelly, one day after he was arrested on
charges of criminal trespassing. Jed's places, running back Law Powell

(01:50:20):
on injurers on injured reserve. That is, with a neck
injury that's going to require surgery. This injury could be
career threatening. Patriots are dinged up. Rob Gronkowski missed Week
seven against the Bears because of back tightness. He also
missed practiced today, as did running back Sony Michelle, who
suffered a knee injury in that game. Good news for
the Patriots as they've got an extra day to prepare
for Buffalo on Monday nights in Buffalo. Maybe it's good

(01:50:43):
news that they get to play Buffalo on Monday night
as well. To wrap up Week eight in Major League Baseball,
of course, tonight, it's Game two of the World Series
Dodgers and Red Sox. Red Sox up one game to
none hundred, Rio on the mound against the Dodgers. Red
Sox Connor with David Price. It's lefty against lefty Dodgers
keeping their enough. The same coverage starts at seven thirty
Eastern time tonight. The NBA find Lakers that goa to

(01:51:05):
Luke Walton fifteen grand for criticizing officials following they're loss
to the Spurs on Monday, And the big news from Manhattan,
A jury found two former Adida's employees and a sports
agent guilty at all counts of defrauding n C Double
A schools in the College of Basketball corruption scandal. It's
expected the n C Double A could use the testimony
and evidence from that trial for their own investigations into

(01:51:27):
the basketball programs. Doug, speaking of basketball and you shry
to see the tweet from Darryl Morey. Yes, Darryl Morey
on Twitter had a pot and a kettle. And of
course this um uh, this is in response to what
Rondo said. This is the only time I'm gonna address this.
I had a mouthpiece in my mouth. I was exasperated.
I had to tell him to go get the f

(01:51:49):
out of here. Look at my Biden language. My hand
was on my hips. I turned away for a second.
Look at Eric Gordon and Mellow in the video. If
they saw me spit, they would have turned their face
up a reaction. He goes on. Of course, the NBA
went on his, Chris Paul's side, and I got three games.
He got to Rondo said. Everyone wants to believe Chris
is a good guy. They don't know he's a horrible teammate.

(01:52:11):
They don't know how he treats people. Look at what
he did last year when he last year, when he
was in l A trying to get in the Clippers
locker room. They don't want to believe he's capable of
taunting in a igniting an incident. And so Daryl Morey
tweets out a photo of a pot and a kettle right,
which is exactly what it is. That's not denying that
Chris Paul is a prickly teammate at times to work with.

(01:52:36):
But Rondo really all right, Garnett was kind of dumb
with you. A lot of those guys in Boston were
done with you. You were in Basketball Siberia. Once you're
in when you're in Sacramento, like when you're forced to
sign a one year deal with Sacramento, the league is
telling you with Chicago, he was good in the playoffs,
then he got hurt. You know, even with New Orleans

(01:52:58):
last year. Everybody points out happened with New Orleans when
he played in the playoffs and they upset the Portland Troublazers.
He was very good playoff Rondo is excellent, but that's
in small doses. Regular season Rondo. Living with Rondo not easy.
And oh yeah, by the way, when't really have started
last year only injury made him start, and then even
this year, like what the league thinks of you one year,

(01:53:21):
nine million dollars tells you, whereas Chris Paul is making
forties something million dollars, right, the league is telling you
what somebody is worth, whether it's perception or reality. The
fact is that Chris Paul is a starting point guard
for a team that had the number one record, that

(01:53:41):
the best record in the NBA in the regular season,
and took the Golden State Warriors to Game seven, and
most people think if he plays, they win, and you're
on your what fourth team in four years, fifth team
in five years. Both of these things can be true,

(01:54:02):
which is why Darryl Morey with a smart nude with
a smart tweet pot calling kettle that that that that
doesn't mean that Rondo is completely wrong. Chris Paul can
be difficult. There's a different seem difficult and bad teammate.
By the way, I'm I'm not gonna take Big Baby

(01:54:23):
Davis's word on who's a good teammate, who's a bad teammate.
He's clearly on team Doc Rivers. He was with Doc
with the Celtics. Those guys ran him off. He was
with Doc with the l A Clippers. I don't take
any one guy's opinion on it. I take a league's

(01:54:44):
opinion on it. And the league has spoken and they
believe Chris Paul is a better player. I agree, I
haven't agree with it, but uh, it's not my call.
They believe Chris Paul is better, more dynamic, and more
worthy of being a franchise player than Rondo. The East,
Rondo wouldn't have a one year deal with the Lakers
where he's eventually going to come off the bench. Will

(01:55:28):
Fox Sports Radio. I think we need to run down
as many stories as possible. Let's do so, and something
we call the press. The press. Dan Bayer joins us. Dan,
as many stories you can in as short period time
as possible. All right, the Dodgers story with the same
starting lineup as they had in Game one. For tonight's
Game two of the World Series, Red Sox putting lefty

(01:55:50):
David Price on the hill. The only change for Boston.
Christian Vasquez will start at catcher for the Red Sox
tonight bad in the ninth spot. Coverage gets underway at
seven thirty Eastern time on Fox. First pitch eight or
nine Eastern time, going with the defensive catcher with Fasquez right,
going with the guy who can uh the defense first.
Of course, what we'll see he's the caddy for David Price.

(01:56:10):
How that works out for them? Um? I think you'll
know really early on on David Price. He's the guy.
He could go seven innings with that changeup, or he
could last very few. UM. I do fear though, that
these bullpens, you get to middle relief and you have
no idea what you're gonna get. The Dodgers bull middle
relief has been much better in the playoffs than the

(01:56:31):
Red Sox has. I think Dodgers have to win tonight
otherwise there's no series, and I think they do win
tonight again, first pitch, just after eight o'clock Eastern time.
A couple of NFL stories, Doug all bunched together and
you can pick what you like. Broncos. Let go of
Chad Kelly today, the backup quarterback following his arrest on
charges of criminal trust passing Patrick Peters. So let's get
let's get it that one here real quick. So the

(01:56:51):
story is now that in addition to walking into some
random ladies apartment, sitting down on the couch next to
her and start mumbling before she changed for a dude
in the house chased him out with a vacuum cleaner. Uh,
he tried to get into a fight with somebody at
von Miller's party. Then with security at von Miller's party,
there's there's two different parts to it. One is who

(01:57:14):
has a costume party that need with friends, that needs
security right from their own guests, Like I could understand
if somebody else tried to break in, but from the
people who are actually invited, I do. Look, I I
know that Vomer. He's at a higher level than all
the rest of us combine. And this is a yearly,
big costume party thing that they do. Um And so

(01:57:37):
maybe it's you know, at a at a bar, and
that's why you need security. But when I CURTI had
bouncers at his own party, Like, I've never been to
a part somebody's party, you know, and so at their
house that had bouncers in it, I don't know. And
then Chad Kelly, Uh, this is the rare is like
the golden sombrero of football. He's now been kicked off

(01:57:59):
his high school, cay Edge, first college and protein. That's amazing,
amazing new league record. The party was at a like
a some theater in uh got Englewood, California. But Cardinal's
corner Patrick Peterson tweeted that he intends to give his
all to the Cardinals for years to come. There's on
the heels of the report that he actually wanted out

(01:58:21):
of Arizona. Of course, Peterson an under contract through the season. Yeah,
he had a meeting with with Mr Bidwell, talked him
off the ledge and said, don't worry, we already have
a quarterback. We'll try and fix this thing. But he
he went, He went from I want to be traded
to I'm a Cardinal for life in like thirty seconds,
just in time for the Seahawks and their ground attack

(01:58:43):
to come to town. The Lions have made a move,
acquiring Damon Snacks Harrison from the Giants for a fifth
round pick. You're fired up about the Seahawks team. You're
like me, they're a little bit better than you thought
they Yeah, I thought seven and nine, eight and eight.
But it's how they have been playing that change could
in the rim, Yeah, they could have. Speaking of the Rams,
Cooper Cup was knocked out of that game with a concussion,

(01:59:05):
and then he also suffered that knee injury against the
Broncos forced him to miss last week against the Niners.
He's doubtful to face the Packers this Sunday. So your
guy Robert Woods, who was on earlier today could see
more action than you are you telling you you're you're
saying load. If you can find a way to trade
for Robert Woods in your fantasy league, yes, because his
value was probably low. The amazing thing with the Rams
is is there are just four guys who get everything,

(01:59:28):
and it's girly Cup, Woods and Cooks. It's not like
it's spread around to eight different players or there's you know,
two or three different backs out of the backfield. It's
those four guys that if one of them doesn't get it,
them just goes to the other three, sharing his caring,
sharing his caring. That's true. Oh boy bet Online released
odds and who the head coach at Ohio State will

(01:59:49):
be next year for Game one of the twenty nineteen season.
Urban Meyer barely the leader. He's listed at plus one
five Iowa states. Matt Campbell is at plus one fifty,
with Ryan Day, Jeff Brahm and Bob Stoops at plus
one thousand. So if you bet a hundred you win
a thousand, Yes, I would take Ryan Day. I would

(02:00:11):
I would go with Ryan Day. That would be that
that would be the one that I would be most. Uh.
The Matt Campbell one is intriguing because from Masslin and
didn't I mean play that Mountain Union played collegiately, but
there's the Ohio Ties there. Plus how long is Matt
Campbell going to be available? Is the question? Well, I
guess they also thought is if you have Ryan Day

(02:00:34):
and he knows what he's doing. But there has been
something off even when urban Meyer returned. Obviously there's some
bad feelings over how it went down with the suspension,
but I think there's something more to it, and you
know he's had health issues in the past. We'll see.
I want to do some college hoops or NBA right now,
all right? The League find Lakers at coach Luke Walton
fifteen thousand dollars for criticizing officials following their overtime loss

(02:00:56):
to the Spurs on Monday, what's the criticizing officials. Uh,
he was not happy with how many fouls were called
on La Marcus Aldridge. When when Marcus Aldridge got the
ball and kept turning over one shoulder, they're playing defense.
One look, you have to call fouls if you want
to get the low post back into the n b A.
So now the Lakers don't have a low post presence

(02:01:17):
really outside of Lebron, who's not a true low post player.
So I think that the rule change or the change
in calling all those fouls hurts them more than anything else.
In his in his comments that unfortunately don't have right
at on hand for me, he did compare the game
to the Rockets on Saturday to the Spurs game on Monday,
which I thought was odd considering it's not the same

(02:01:37):
officiating crew and it was also a completely different style
of games. Yeah, Spurs have no point guard and so
they don't run the ball screen, they don't bring their
big man away. They would throw it to La Marcus Aldridge.
And yeah, I mean JaVale got in foul trouble. Zoobots
got in foul trouble and Jonathan Williams had to come in.
But they were calling fouls when there was contact and
low post. But Houston doesn't post up, so that's it's

(02:01:57):
a completely different game. Maybe overshadow by Blake Griffin's fifty
point effort in their overtime win last night. Pistons and
Sixers made other headlines. The NBA recent of the technical
foul given a Piston center Andre Drummond late in the
last night's game. Six Or center Joel Embiid was given
a flopping warning for on the play. The first of
the season. He only got a warning, yes, the first

(02:02:20):
one of the seasons, so the second one will be
a fine for Joel Embiid. Mm hmmm um. The Joel
and beat thing like, look, dude, just play you just
play everything, You'll take care of itself. And he is
a a grandiose, huge personality, but flopping and some of
the other comments and Twitter like it's it is growing

(02:02:40):
a little tired, and and Drummond called Joel Embiid um
a bad actor and out of shape after last night's
getting pressed. That was the press. I love NBA, Twitter
love NBA Twitter. Who wins tonight? John Rown mused to
pick in the Dodgers right, I'm gonna go with the Dodgers.
The Dodgers in five. No, no, I just said the
Dodgers Tonight Musical. You like Tonight? Give me the Dodgers.

(02:03:04):
What about you? Uh you get we can make it
a clean sweeper. I'm gonna go with the Red Sox
Red Sox. I think they are the better team. I
just I just starting pitching himself like Reu. I trust,
but I think this is gonna be a double digit
score wins. Doug Otlip Show
