(00:29):
up America, Doug got Leave Show, Fox Sports Radio. Welcome
into the Doug got Leap Show. You're on Fox Sports Radio. Man,
do we have a great show for you today? I
mean unbelievable. Joe Bucks gonna join us later on the show.
(00:52):
Joe Buck of course calling tonight's Thursday Night Football and
appears that he may be calling the World Series for
the next fifty years with rumors of a long term
Fox deal. Edward is gonna join us, will get his
take on on what's going on with the Cowboys? Is
Jerry a man of his word? Is he really going
to extend doc And if so, doesn't that mean Jason
(01:12):
Garrett's likely gone? And what do the Cowboys think that
Dez Bryant has left in the tank. Former Calves general
manager David Griffin will join us. Will ask him what
his take is about Lebron James, fresh off Lebron James
l a Lakers getting a hard fought win over the
Minnesota Timberwolves. He's lived this, he understands what it's like
(01:35):
to watch Braun in his first dozen or so games
with a new team. Is this par for the course
or is this Lebron four point? Oh? And then Mike
Leach the Pirates gonna join us half past this hour,
Org does he believe they will get a rightful shot
(01:58):
at a national championship if they went out? I mean
its beating Washington, running the table, winning the Pack twelve championship.
We'll ask him, We'll ask him, Man, there's a lot
to get to and sometimes there's a lot to unpack. Right,
there's a lot to unpack. For example, tonight's game a
(02:22):
lot to unpack. You have the new Levy on Bell
Soccer where they're like, oh, hey, I'm not sure if
you guys read this part of the contract. But he
might not have to show up. After all, somebody stopped
Levian Bell mid pickup game in Pittsburgh, Like, yo, dude,
you came back for nothing. Still, it feels like a
(02:42):
foregone conclusion. He will in fact show up, he will
in fact sign that signed the franchise tag, and he
will at some point in the near future play for
the Pittsburgh Steelers. So you got that, like, wait, maybe
he doesn't have to show up in order to in
order for to count for a year year, and then
the franchise tag next year be so bloated, be so
(03:04):
ridiculously high that that he you know, the Steelers obviously
let him go. And then of course you have the
Steelers who are playing better. James Connors had a magnificen
seas and better statistically. Then Levian bell Antonio Brown pulled
(03:26):
over for going a hundred miles an hour and not
on a freeway, I believe, And look, I'm not gonna
sit here and tell you that I don't speed. I'm
not gonna tell you that. I'm not gonna tell you
that I haven't gone a hundred um but at time
and place, and you're going a hundred, you caught once
you get to three. But once you get plus ninety.
(03:49):
I stopped feeling sorry for you. I thee I was
keeping up with the flow of traffic. Nobody else was
on the road, like all of these things make total
sense when you're in the eighties. Once you get past ninety,
I can't. And then once you get past a hundred,
I can't. I just can't. Oh yeah. And then you
have the Carolina Panthers, who have found Cam Newton's ability
(04:13):
to be uh A once again a game changing for
with a good side, game changing player. They seem to
be using Christian McCaffrey in a multitude of ways, all
of which are successful. They have a tremendous run defense.
This is a big time football game. It might well
be the game of the week. And of course on
Thursday Night, which in the past, once you get late
(04:34):
in the season Thursday Night, it's not always the best
play games. There's a lot unpacked tonight ran what Panthers
defense eight in the league and rushing yards allowed eight
in the league and yards per game, not that that
really matters. Fumbles, cause turnovers are a huge Like you
(04:58):
ask NFL people that are like, what's your and over ratio?
How many points are you giving up? What? What are
you in the red zone? What are you on third down?
That's really what NFL stats come to. We almost have
to almost you almost want to shame the NFL and
how they look at how they still hand out defensive
(05:19):
stats because everybody in the NFL they look at it
completely differently, like total defense and yards. No one in
the league actually cares zero zero like Cleveland, Chicago, Seattle, Carolina.
(05:40):
Those are the teams that that that lead in in takeaways.
Cleveland twenty three takeaways. It shows how bad Cleveland's offense
has been considered. They lead the world in takeaways. They've
gotten ten fumbles and thirteen interceptions. The Carolina Panthers fourth
in the NFL into takaways at fifteen so far this season,
(06:03):
eleven interceptions, which is big time, big time. That's one
of those kind of all you need to know. So
I look at James Connor's rushing stats, and he's second
in attempts, he's seconding yards, He's fifteen in yards per attempt.
It's one of the reasons they're so good on third down.
(06:26):
Levy on Bells lurking, He'll probably be watching at twenty
four Hour Fitness or l A Fitness or one of
the fitness centers in Pittsburgh. And here's James Conner's time
on National TV to show just how good he's been
is how good he is against one of the top
defense in the NFL. Tent in total yards, tent total
(06:47):
TVs over a thousand all purpose yards. Remarkable story. Man.
There's a lot to unpack here, a lot right between
Cam who's been to a Super Bowl but hasn't won
one and was coming off a wildly disappointing up and
(07:08):
down season and Ben Roethlisberger, who had some disappointing days
last last season and they came up short in the
playoffs to the Jacksonville Jaguars, a team in the Pittsburgh
that at times early on the season the preseason seemed
a little bit in disarray. To the Carolina Panthers, who
(07:31):
you know, ever since Josh Norman left. Then they started
trading away wide receivers mid season last year, some fingers
being pointed at Cam like this is a really interesting game.
And then you have the Levy on Bell stuff. Look,
my take on the Levy on Bell thing is is
pretty simple. Uh, they continue to search for excuses to
(07:56):
have him not show up. He thought he was worth
the war than they thought he was worth. They offered
him a contract and he said he didn't want that contract.
The agent probably wanted him to tate the contract. And
now the agent may have just now become aware of
a clause in the contract that means he doesn't have
to show up. Now he doesn't have to show up,
might not have to sign the sign the sheet of paper,
(08:17):
but he also won't collect a penny, which seems to
be really really bad business. The whole thing makes for fascinating,
fascinating theater. Um. You can hear us now on Serious

how do we get here with the Patriots? Right? Like? Remember,
do you remember how bad the Patriots looked against the
Jacksonville Jaguars? It was it was not good. Like, here's
(09:44):
how bad it was against Blake boy. This is Week
two in the NFL. They played on the road against
the Jaguars. And keep in mind the Jaguars did not
have Leonard four Nett. He didn't play, and it wasn't
like t J. Yeldon though he averaged five pointing, he
only got ten carries. Healing Cole had seven catches for
(10:08):
a hundred and sixteen yards. D D. Westbrook four catches,
averaging twenty yards to catch, including a sixty one yard
touchdown reception. You're like, what, yeah, d J. Clark, James
O'Shaughnessy Niles, Paul Austin, Safarian Jenkins, Dante Moncrief, Corey Grant.
(10:29):
These are the guys who lit up the Patriots. Blake
Bortle's stat line was twenty nine forty five, three hundred
and seventy six yards, four touchdowns and one interception. That's
what happened. It wasn't close the Jaguars, And we told
you the statue you need to know in the National
(10:51):
Football League red zone third down right, third down yards
per play third down efficiency in that game week to
ten of fourteen for the Jaguars, four of twelve for
the Patriots. Jaguars average seven yards of play seven and
(11:17):
they were in the red zone three times and converted
two times on touchdowns, kicked a field goal the other time,
three for three on red zone conversions. They also won
the turnover battle, which is huge, two to one to
the pass. They wiped the field with the newing the Patriots.
And look, this has happened before a couple of years
(11:39):
ago when the Patriots won the Super Bowl. We forgot.
We forget that early in the season they lost to
an Arizona Cardinals team that won four games that year.
They went out the next week and lost the Detroit
Lions and have not lost since. So what has happened.
What's happened? Well, you know, they've gotten healthy. They got
(11:59):
in jewls in Entleman back they went out and made
some acquisitions in the free agent on on free and
free agency now where they went and basically Josh Gordon
was about to be a free agency they traded for him.
They've acquired some Nobody has ever been better at adding
(12:21):
pieces as the season goes on than the Patriots. I
bring up the Patriots because I watched the Lakers play
last night and there were moments where Lebron James seemed
like Lebron James of old. There was some magical three
point shots, the the incredible strength and dexterity, maybe not
(12:44):
the overall sheer dominance scoring, but twenty four, ten and nine,
and he seemed for the most part until the end
of the game to be playing within the offense. Lebron
has two nine and ten, only three turnovers, does it
in thirty nine minutes and they win against the Minnesota Timberwolves,
(13:06):
who had beaten them going back last weekend the Twin Cities.
What was the difference? Well, late in the game, they
chose to go with Josh Hart who didn't play late
in the game the week before, and they added Tyson
Chandler who only had two points, only played twenty three
minutes and only gets credit with nine rebounds, but he
had a whole bunch of tipouts that led to offensive
(13:28):
team offensive rebounds, and they were better defensively in the
low post. So Carl Towns was limited to five of
sixteen and seemed to disappear in the fourth quarter. Matter
of fact, I tweeted out and several people d m
me that they thought it was funny and accurate. Hey,
Carl Town's Andrew Wiggins, It's okay to come out now
the game's over. They went into a shell. Not only
(13:51):
did the Lakers win, but they survived a torrential downpall
downpour from noted three Points specialist Derek Now happened Derrick
Rose all of a a sudden conshowed to have the Lakers
done it well, They've gotten healthy, They've played together, they
(14:12):
fixed some things schematically. Rondo's come off of suspension, just
like Julian Edelman came off of suspension, Brandon Ingram came
off of suspension, probably played his best overall game of
the year with twenty and six, and they went out
in the waiver wire and and got Tyson Chandler. My
point is I think that Lebron looks a little bit
(14:33):
older then he's looked at any time in his career,
and he is older, but I mean finally starting to
look a little bit older. I'm not sure this this
style is truly for him, will benefit him. It may
benefit others, but I'm not sure it benefits him or
gets the most out of him. But I would also
point out, and this is really really important, that whether
(14:56):
it's Lebron, Lebron's people or gms who worked with Lebron,
who who have to figure out what to put around him.
The Calves added you know Ray Allen after the first year,
Real was not part of that, not one, not two,
not three press compels right, They added pieces when he
(15:22):
came back home. Remember they added pieces as they went on.
They didn't have j R. Smith originally j R. Smith
when he first started playing. J R. Smith was not
a member of the Calves, and it was a disaster
with the Knicks and they got him off the street.
The same is true when they traded for Kyle Korver.
(15:43):
So I didn't mean that the Lakers are the Patriots,
but Lebron has a little bit of Patriots to him.
Just give me some time to figure it out. Give
me some time to play in the shape and you know,
at the end of the day, I'm still gonna be
there in the playoffs. There's a direct parallel there. I
(16:04):
don't think anybody can deny. And yeah, a lot a
lot like Tom Brady. I know that at some point
Father Time is going to win this thing, but he
had one yet until he does. Much like the Patriots
in the a f C East, much like Kansas and
(16:24):
the Big Twelve in basketball and Oklahoma and the Big
Twelve in football, Clemson in the a c C like
they just but especially in professional sports, the ability to
kind of figure it out and go, like, you know,
if we just had this one piece, changes everything, changes everything.
(16:45):
I'd love to say that, you know, we have all
these guys have this foresight and what your team's gonna
look like, but you don't know until they actually line
up together, until they actually played together. Ryan Music what
he got so as a Laker and I look at
the Lakers and the one thing that seems to always
pop out to me is like the defense is so
(17:06):
atrocious and the idea that they brought in Tyson Chandler,
who you know, a ton of respect to him in
his career and he played well last night, but bringing
in a thirty six year old than going all right,
here we go. Defense is back on track. I just
don't think that that's what's gonna get them better in
the long term. So is this something that evolves over
(17:27):
time or is it just gonna be like, hey, we
hope to beat teams one night in and nine. Now,
oh well, Look, I think first the NBA the paces up,
the scoring is up. The paces at the highest it's
been since the early nineties. And one reason the pace
was skewed in the early nineties was the Denver Nuggets
um had Paul west west Head as their coach UM
(17:50):
and Paul west Head was the coach at ELM Loyal Merrymountain.
They rant running guns, so it kind of anyway. The
point is people are playing faster, shooting more threes, So
you have to a lot Like the NFL, you have
to adjust. You can't go with total yards because everybody
moves to football. Now. You gotta go with third What
do you do on third down? When you do in
red zone? What do you do with turnovers? All those
those things in the n b A, I don't think
(18:12):
you can look at overall number of points, right you
just can't because pace of play really matters there Um,
I think you know how you defend the three offensive
rebounds efficiency like all of these things. How many layers
can't give up dead layups. So if if your point is, hey,
they struggled giving up dead layups, that's a good point.
(18:34):
That's why they added Tyson Chandler. I think they thought.
I think the plan initially was, hey, Lebron can be
our small ball five, or maybe Coups can be our
small ball five. But they cannot. Neither can do it.
And so now you have Tyson Chandler, who I don't
know if he can give you this many minutes, but
Javo can't give you a whole game, and they didn't
(18:57):
have anybody else to cover form but jave El McGee
at twenty minutes a game, and twenty minutes a game
with Tyson Chandler, I think that that increases your rim protection.
And then you gotta figure out your small ball lineup
if you want to stick with Lebron as your five
and your small ball lineup, I mean, Julius random would
have been a good option, considering he didn't make that much.
(19:20):
So um, anyway to answer your question. I do think
that will help them substantially defensively, even if Tyson Chandler
gives you nothing offensively. Um that rim protection is paramount.
I think the issue that they're they're running into is
they have two point guards that can't shoot, and that's
really hard and a lot of teams are when they
(19:40):
go small playing two point guards together. And the way
what you're talking about with the pace in the NBA
D in the playoffs, is it gonna slow down? It
always slows down, but I don't know, I don't know how.
I don't know if it slows down as much. It
does seem like that just kind of plays into exactly
(20:01):
what the Warriors want to do though, right, I mean,
all these teams when they pushed the pace and the
scoring is up. I mean, does anyone really think that
when it comes to playoff basketball, anyone's can actually be
able to outscore the Warriors? Like it almost seems like
everyone's but people will become no. Well, if you look
though at that, it did. I don't know if it's
(20:23):
slowed down, but it became a lot more physical when
they played the Rockets that the Rockets were super super
super physical. That's the only way to be to to
to to beat the Golden State Warriors. They're gonna turn
it over and you can contain them because there you
know you can't if you can be physical with them.
So yeah, it I don't know if you you say
(20:44):
it slows down, but I think it gets way way,
way more physical than it is in regular season, way
more physical. Let's get you over to Dan buy or
find out what else is going on in the world
of sports when you got getting schet for that Panther
Steelers game tonight in Pittsburgh and a whole lot going
on outside of the game. First of all, let's start
with the Levian Bell situation, and NFL Network reported today
(21:05):
said that Ball and his agent now looking over their
options because they found out some information they didn't know
previously within the c b A. Now his agent and
Bell evaluating the options to continue their hold up for
the rest of the season because the franchise tag he
received this season does count under the c b A,
and if the tag was designated again, he'd be required
(21:26):
to be paid around twenty five million dollars next season.
I guess there was some question on if he didn't report,
if the franchise tag would count or not in it
does count, so now Levian Bell and his agent considering
sitting out the entire season. Steelers water receiver Antonio Brown
has his own issues, charged with reckless driving this morning
after allegedly going over one hundred miles per hour and
(21:47):
its black porst w p x I ses. Brown was
stopped after he drove pasted an officer, and the Steelers
say they are aware of the incident. Chiefs take on
the Cardinals on Sunday and they should get linebacker Justin
Houston back. While Redskins were thing that Chris Thompson remains out.
It's been ruled out of their game Sunday against the Buccaneers.
I had books out for Notre Dame. The quarterbacks is
gonna miss the contest against Florida State because of a
(22:09):
rib injury. Brandon Wimbush will start in his place on Saturday,
and the Vancouver Canucks stick on the Boston Bruins at

(22:29):
back to you. Thanks so much, Dan, Great stuff, Dan Buyer.
Check out his fantasy show nine o'clock Eastern, six o'clock
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio on Sunday morning. The other
thing he does on Sunday morning as he reacts to
Saturday night, and man, there's been some incredible Saturday nights
in the pack twelve. Who knows that better uh than
the head coach, The head coach of the number eight
(22:52):
ranked Washington Washington State Huskies, Mike Leach joins us, what
do I say that? They say? The Huskies, I'm an idiot.
I'm a plead idiot. Mike Leach knows I'm an idiot,
but that that's good the Washington State Coops. Sorry, Couger fans,
We did we drop that? Did you? You did not
drop that? See you drop things that you say? Coach
Leech joins us in the Doug Outlip Show on Fox
(23:12):
Sports Radio. Coach, how many cups of coffe you in today?
None yet, but I'll have one before I go out
there for practice. All right? Fair enough? Um, I thought
the win of the year for you was not the
Oregan game where you got out to a big lead
and and controlled it and it was an incredible day
(23:33):
with all that energy in Pullman. I thought the next
week against Stanford, considering what had happened last year after
a huge home win, I thought that was give me
your sense for why this team is different. The ability
to put wins back to back to back then some
of your previous teams like last year, Well we won't
quitte a few games last year. Um, but I think
(23:56):
that you know, this is the most coachable team I've had.
Uh think they're very coachable group of guys. I think,
you know, as a coach to talk about improved each week,
I think these guys are really committed to doing that.
So I think that's helped us. And then I also
think that you know, I've got a bunch of new
coaches I think are really bringing some good energy. And
(24:17):
then um that uh, we have a lot of competition
going on at several positions. Um, we're a youngish team,
and UM, people are really having to battle it out
with one another to get reps out there. Why do
you think you're still ranked behind L s U. You know,
(24:39):
I haven't really given that much thought. The biggest thing
is is, uh, you know, we can control what happens,
you know, how we're preparing what happens to us. I
mean the biggest thing everybody, you know, starting to cease
and out. Everybody thought we were going to get our
head kicked in everybody but us, and so then I think,
you know, the biggest thing is just try to focus
(25:00):
on the task at hand. And that's because that's all
all you really have any control over, you know, Mike
Leach joining US head coach of Washington State. There ain't
number eight in the country. They're eight in one first place,
the top the pack twelve go to Colorado. Uh. This
this upcoming Saturday play in Boulder. I know you like
to walk across campus? Do you like to go for
is there? Is there a purposeful walk in your future
(25:22):
in Boulder? You know I've been the Boulder did a
I did a football camp up there when Rick new
Newhaus was the head coach. I've been all over the
campus up there. Uh. Uh you know, and I know
some people do some people do before a game walk
through campus all that. Uh, I don't. It's a little
(25:45):
harder as head coach. It's a little harder. Um, but
all campuses have there, you know, I mean those that's
one of the coolest things there is. It's just good
campuses in general. I mean walking through a campus that's
a that's a great time. It's the combination of, uh,
(26:05):
you got the mountains, you have the mountains in the background,
you got a yeah, it's it's pretty incredible. Okay. What
what about your thoughts on a wild buffalo, which I
mean they do have some ties around it, but those
are really for decoration, right, A wild buffalo Ralphie on
the field before the game. Like, look back when you
were at Texas Tech, your mascot was armed, so you
(26:27):
had to feel safe. No such luck with the coogs, right,
your thoughts on Ralphie patrolling the sidelines and coming out
and leading the buffs out on Saturday. I think to Ralphie,
the Ralphie mascot is an outstanding mascot. I mean, um,
you know, as far as uh, you know, as far
as a live mascot runs out there and it's got
(26:49):
the handlers and it's pulling the handlers. The handlers aren't
pulling Ralphie. You know. Ralphie is a relatively small female
buffalo as big as as big and is Ralphie is
uh think about think about a really really large one,
you know, buf buffalo can get as highest seven feet.
(27:10):
Can you imagine one of those suckers out there running
around the field. No, I cannot, I can't. I had
no idea it was a small female. I didn't know
the level of research that you've done in this. Well.
I grew up out west and um and when I
when we lived in Sheridan while, I mean there was
actually a buffalo pin kind of in the middle of
(27:32):
town by the park. You know, there's a big spot.
You know, buffalo would run around in there, but uh
uh no, I mean amazing animal. And then in the
courts uh uh. Then where I went to high school
was right outside of Yellowstone, so there'd be buffalo there.
But uh so I have a good working knowledge of
(27:54):
buffalo and uh they actually get one heck of a
lot bigger than Ralphie. Pretty pretty good to eat too,
Gardner Minshew, Your your graduate transfer senior quarterback has been
um has been mostly spectacular the entire season. Take me
through the process of how you came to land him
(28:15):
as a transfer quarterback. You know, and I can't remember
how we first heard, but basically on the net and
in the business, the rumor mill type of thing, you
find out who's thinking about transferring or who's looking to transfer.
And and for all I know, Gardner called us, I'm
not sure, and um so we're looking for a quarterback
(28:39):
and uh and then you know, in the midst of us,
we're going over early guy at East Carolina Hunt. We're
kind of looking at him on film, and then he
commits to Alabama, and but I knew that Alabama had
a couple of quarterbacks laying around there. And then, um
(28:59):
uh so I called him up anyway, you know, just
you know, before you make this decision or committed, you
have to come take a look at you know, what
we got going here. And uh uh then we're you know,
we don't have anybody that has started the game here,
and Gardner had started a lot of games, but he
(29:20):
started some and so uh uh yeah, he came out
and I basically just asked him, I said, you know,
do you want to do you want to sit on
the bench at Alabama or do you want to come
here and leave the nation in passing? And um so
he committed to us pretty quick and then uh, we
(29:40):
had a heck of a battle in camp as far
as he was going to be the starter's kind of
a three way battle. And um, it's very even too,
it was very even. The biggest thing that Gardner did
is he brought a lot of energy to the unit
and um, and he picked up so much so fast
(30:00):
because he got here in late May that I thought
with you know, if I gave him all the reps,
he'd developed even quicker. And he has, and so it's
worked out good. Um, Look, you've had You've had a
lot of quarterbacks. I mean you've a lot of them. Obviously,
you know Luke was Luke got hurt at the end
of last year and that that hurt his production. You
go back to Tech and all the different guys in
(30:22):
hypel when when you're at Oklahoma, Um, where is where
is he in the lineage of the quarterbacks that you've had,
You know, stuff to sort them. But he's pretty high.
I mean he's really high as far as I think
as far as commanding a huddle and uh, not taking
negative plays and just elevating the whole group, I'd have
(30:46):
him way up there. Mike Leach, the head coach, of
Washington State joining us in the Doug ot Live Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah. The other thing I would
add those I think I think as far as impacting
a specific team or is you know, I think he does.
He's done a better job of that than anybody else
in the country this year. Isn't that hard to tell that?
(31:09):
Like you said, you had this big quarterback competition, How
can you really can you can you really tell, um
what type of leader a guy is when he hasn't
been named the starting quarterback? You know, like, how do
you tell the intangible aspects of what Gardner had versus
what others had when you're trying to evenly judge their
skill set for your offense? You know, it's difficult that
(31:32):
that's one of the harder things. Um. But the biggest
thing is is you try to you try to figure
out how the other the rest of the team responds
to him, because, um, a quarterback quarterback by definition, in
my opinion, the biggest, the most important job of quarterback
has is to elevate to play the others around it,
(31:56):
you know, because he's a guy that deals to fall
off the sides where it goes. As some say in
What's called and um, you know, just and has to
have the ability to feature the strength and of the
players around him. And and you know it's the airline
stragon to pick them up for you know, if they're
(32:18):
uh they're too high, to settle them down, you know
type of thing. And and uh, you know, in practice
he appeared to have an outstanding knack for that. And
then he also has on the field. Yeah, no, he's
he's quite amazing. How did you do this? You know,
like I look back your I think it was your
(32:39):
third year you guys, record wise, I think you win
three games and then all of a sudden it started
turn you know where you win nine, you win eight.
Last year you win nine. Obviously that the win over
sc was a huge one. And then this year with
College Game Day and now in first place. Um, you know,
looking like the Dominican, How did you do it? How
did it turn? In? Pullman? Shoot? You know, I think
(33:03):
it's just sort of how do you eat an elephant
one bite at a time? You know, I think that, Um,
I think that as you start to build, well, first
of all, you start recruiting guys that that buy into
your vision, that buy into the vision that you have
for the team. The other thing is then you have
(33:25):
to have great offseasons. But one offseason is not necessarily enough,
especially if you're down as far as Washington State was. Um,
you have to start packing some off seasons in where
you've got a corps of guys in that room that are,
you know, pushing for the same thing and kind of
hold each other accountable. And then uh, you know, we're uh,
(33:50):
people keep pushing one another. The other thing is is
you know, as you gradually have success, you've got to
build on it, because you know, the hard thing when
I first got here, you know, the you had a
lot of players that couldn't visualize and couldn't believe that
you can have success or when or beat somebody, I mean,
(34:13):
and so so as you're you know, if you're having
little successes, you kind of build on the vision there.
So if they realize, all right, if I could do this,
all right, how about that? You know, you just gotta
keep raising the bar and and and then the mentality
develops in your locker room where your players and coaches
start raising their own bar as well. And then uh
(34:37):
uh you know, and then with once you get everybody
doing it together, I think you can kind of elevated
pretty fast. You know, when say there, you do the
same thing when you went to Kentucky. You you brought
basically the forward pass, the not just the forward pass,
but the spread to the SEC. You did the same
thing when you went to Oklahoma. Right, people think of
(34:57):
Texas Tech, but they forget Oklahoma was a man offensively.
You guys come in and you completely changed it in
one year, and now everybody's copying it in the patch. Well,
there's always been more teams that play, maybe not in
the air raid or your type of system, but in
the spread type of system. Has that made it more
difficult less difficult? How has the adjustment at Wazoo been
(35:19):
as opposed to your previous three stops. When you first
got into league, you were the first doing it the
way you were doing it. Well, I think it's getting
a little tougher from the standpoint that you'll play against uh,
you know, some of your own packages and some of
you know what you do you know, because so actually
(35:39):
I do feel like there are times at least place
here and there that we're playing against ourselves. Um So
I think that makes it a little more difficult because
you're not as unique from the standpoint that they actually
play against it and practice against the law. Um. The
other thing is, I'm already to get a ton of
(36:01):
coaches out there, and so UM, you're you know, now,
I would either run into somebody that used to work
for me, or a lot of people that have whether
they've had exposure through me, have the other assistant coaches
I've worked with. UM, So that's I guess maybe the
(36:24):
negative part. The positive part is is, UM, there's a
lot of quarterbacks and receivers out there now. You can
go to high schools and there's guys kind of already
doing what we're going to ask them to do when
they get here. Well, listen, coach Gardner's been outstanding. Your
team continues to roll along. Wish you the best of
(36:46):
luck one avoiding that that female buffalo and of course
the Buffaloes, the eleven Buffaloes on defense. Good luck this weekend, Boulder,

Doug is? Yes, all right? Guess who Doug is shooting
down trade offers for their best player in the NBA
where their best player? Yes, so it's happening in the NBA.
What are the NBA teams getting trade offers for their
best player? But they're shooting them down right now? I
(38:16):
have to t Jimmy Butler would be too easy. I'm
gonna go with John Wall Butler deal the team. Yes, yes,
the Charlotte Hornets are shooting down trade offers. The Athletic
reports Michael Jordan and the team have received offers for
Kemba Walker, but they think they can contend for a
(38:37):
playoff spot right now, in the sixth spot in the East.
And they also feel that they could give Walker the
type of contract he wants in the off season if
he stays. I just they're just again, they're kind of
one of these teams fighting for the middle, right, Like,
I feel bad. I think Kemba's a better pro than
I thought he would be there all times the Hornets
all time lean scorer. But you know, like not getting
(39:00):
Steph Curry to come back home, right, that's not happening.
I just it just feels like they're just a team, Like, oh, yeah,
the Hornets, They're back being the Hornets in Charlotte. Okay.
There was a Sweet sixteen in Anaheim a few years
ago with uh San Diego State Duke Arizona and then Yukon. Yeah,
and uh you got Kyrie Irving, Kawhi Leonard and uh,
(39:21):
you know Kemba Walker playing in that regional. I thought
Jeremy Lamb was going to be the best player of
them all. Guests who dug may not make his debut
with his new team this weekend in the NFL may
not make his debut. That would be de Bryant. Yeah.
Sean Payton, the Saints head coach said, quote, we'll see

heading that des was five pounds heavier than they hoped
and they hadn't seen him practice yet. Yes, yes, didn't
(39:44):
have a baby. Baby. Mama didn't have a baby. But
you just gotta get rid of the babyweight. Um, maybe
I'll break that story on Sunday morning on your show.
I'll call it. Yeah, yes, please do absolutely guess who
dug the Dodgers offered at a trade with the Nationals
for outfielder Bryce Harper. Who did the Dodgers offer up
many Machado? Uh oh, Corey Sager, No, yes, that's who
(40:13):
it is. In an August offer, they offered a swap
of outfielders and the Nationals declined that offer, but the
Dodgers Heck. The Dodgers off season may have been a
significantly changed. If Puig wasn't there, he had some big
hits for the team. He had some huge hits with you,
although you'd also you would add Bryce Harper in his stead.
Bryce Harper if he actually saw pitches in the strike
(40:35):
zone would be pretty amazing. This is game time on

and sunny and beautiful here in southern California. I'll be
on a jet plane tonight to Cincinnati. Let's see here, guys,
Cincinnati waiting the weather isn't Cincinnati? Honestly like here's the
(41:40):
thing about southern California that is gonna take you off
because you don't live here. But I'm not gonna apologize
for it, because it's really expensive to live here. Right,
So they're good and there's bad. What do you um? Will?
You never spend any sort of time looking at the other.
(42:01):
That's why people are so People wonder why people drive
so poorly in the rain in southern California, Like, oh,
they don't know how the driving the rain because it
never rains. No, it's because we didn't know what was
gonna rain, because we don't watch the weather. We don't
watch the weather. You ready for the wet the weather
is ramos, let's do it, okay? Uh tomorrow morning, Saturday,
(42:24):
thirty nine Sunday. Now it used to be when I
lived in in Connecticut and worked in the city of
worked in Bristol, the last two places like forty nine
and sunny as brisk. Throw on a sweater, get a Lotte,
some jeans, maybe a scarf, and you're good. Dude, I'm
(42:47):
doing Parko with a sweatshirt underneath it. Now because forty
nine when once you live in California for a year,
Oh my gosh, that's the coldest temperature on Earth. David Griffin,
he put in his time in the city of Cleveland.
I'm sure it's in the low thirties. Uh. This this
uh this week in Cleveland, of course. David Griffin, former
general manager of the National Basketball Association NBA TV analysts.
(43:10):
You can check out his show Deals and Dunks on
Serious XMS. Serious XM that's on Saturday mornings. David how
par for the course is Lebron james first ten twelve
games with the Lakers as opposed to his last two
stops Miami and Cleveland. I think radically different because I
(43:31):
think the way the team has built is different. I
think the fact that he's on a long term deal
there changes things quite a bit from the experience in
Cleveland as well. I think Magic and Rob Polinka are
looking at that as a long term build situation and
not something where they felt like they had to win
this championship. So I think I think it's the really
different template they're working from, and I'm anxious to see
(43:54):
what it looks like. Uh. I get the concept behind it.
They they sold Lebron on the idea of multiple ball
dominant play creators who could take some of that burden
off of him, which is all fine until you get
to the playoffs, and then you're gonna have Lebron do
it because he's the most efficient play creator in final history.
So you're going to give him the ball. And in
order to do that, you need to space shooting around him.
(44:16):
And I think as they built this and as they
augment the group around trade deadline, they're gonna look to
do that as well. Oh my gosh, we got augmentation.
We got all kinds of big words. My head is
spinning alright. So like, like, look, he was good last night,
He's been good in courters before. Uh, he does look
like he's trying to fit into a different style where
(44:37):
the ball moves more. But we still haven't seen. Hey
I'm Lebron James and I'm the best player in the world. Like,
we haven't seen that. And I understand that there's not
the same number of shooters around him, so there's not
the space. I understand that, uh, not being as much
of the primary ball. But all of that is great,
(44:57):
But I would just expect at some point, Um, you
remember when we Madagascar. You've seen the movie Madagascar did
not Okay, Madagascar is Alex the Lion and a zebra
and a hippo from uh the Central Park Zoo uh
and Ummer David Timmers the draffe right, and they're mistakenly
(45:21):
shipped to Madagascar, and it's there's just a point where
Alex the Lion is so hungry that he's just running.
They're just running through the wilderness, just running like friends,
and all of a sudden, his buddy is the zebra,
looks like a bunch of steaks, and he snaps back
into lion mode, like real lion mode. I'm just wondering
(45:42):
why we haven't seen that from Lebron yet. We haven't
seen the you know what, screw everything, I'm just gonna
take over win a game just to show everybody I'm
still Lebron James. Well, you know, it's funny. I'm actually
watching as we're speaking. I'm watching the replay of the
Minnesota Laker game on NBA TV right now, And to
start the game, Lebron was in that mode a little bit,
and at times in the fourth quarter he was in
(46:03):
that mode a little bit. But he's very much like
and we used to watch him in Cleveland in much
the same way that we watched Jason Kidd in Phoenix,
and we would hope someone would piss him off. Um
and and right now he's very much in that counterpunching
mode where he's just sort of feeling things out. You know.
I say he's a computer on learning mode, and I
(46:23):
think he's just trying to feel his way through it
a little bit, kind of see what the kids are
capable of doing on their own. And I think once
he figures out exactly where he's going to be able
to or rather where he's gonna need to assert himself,
he will. But he's he's not terribly concerned with the
record and the short term. I think he's more concerned
(46:44):
with trying to make sure he helps the pieces fit together.
Right now, David Griffin joining US former general manager in
the NBA. Of course, you can check him out on
NBA TV. You can hear him on Serious x m
UH with Deals and Dunks. That's on Saturday mornings on
Serious Sex. Ham Stug got the show Fox Sports Radio.
About five days ago. Adrian Wardanowski had a story that
(47:09):
Madge Johnson UH called Luke Walton in and hey, dude,
you gotta we gotta have a better planned defensively. We
gotta have a system defensive This system offensively kind of
called him on the carpet. Uh First, How often does
that happen where a gentlemanager a president calls in a
coach after disappointing road trip and wants to have a
(47:30):
discussion about it. Well, I mean, I think it all
depends on how you're phrasing it, right. I mean, we
we would visit every day. I mean we we lived together,
were like a family. So from a GM head coach perspective,
if you guys aren't in lockstep together and aren't spending
an awful lot of time together, you're probably missing the
opportunity to do something special together. So I think in
(47:51):
the situation with Magic, who's who's not with the team
on the road, who's who's not? Like a traditional GM,
that's sort of Rob Blinka's role. I think for Magic
to have us sit down with Luca's fine, But to
make a big deal about it it was probably unnecessary
just from a media perspective, and I'm I'm sure that
was done to generate some sort of effect or urgency
(48:14):
in the team itself. But those kinds of sit downs
and visits happen every day now. That's it's kind of
my That's kind of my point though, David, though, do
you think do you think it's Magic that put it
out there because he wanted to seem like I got this,
or because my problem was not the story that they
met or even that Magic wasn't happy. It was that
it got out right, that that kind of gets out
(48:35):
that bothered me to Okay, so what is it? The
question becomes, does that come from Lebron's people or is
that a message sent to Lebronze people like we know
it's not right. How you read the tea leaves for
me on how you think it actually went down. So
my perspective on it when I saw it happen, was
probably the Lakers wanting Lebron's people and mostly Lebron to
(48:59):
see that understand like, look, we're taking action, we get it. Um,
I don't believe that it's it's again, I just don't
think it's a significant issue. And everything that happens around
the Lebron team becomes a major story. And to me,
you just the one thing you have to do, is
a fan of the Lakers right now is ignore the noise.
(49:20):
Because everything happens, everything coming from one direction or another
happens for a reason that has nothing to do with
winning and losing basketball games. And I don't think it
has anything to do with the Lakers not really believing
in Luke anymore, as evidenced by the fact that they
came out later and said they very much believe in
him and Jeannie said he's our coach, and those types
of things. Holding Luke responsible for the team that was
(49:44):
thrown together prior to the start of the season would
have been acidine at that stage in the game. So
I think it was really more of a just sort
of let's see where we're at, get a feel for
the lay of the land kind of meeting David Griffin
joining us in the Dug Outlives show, um ended Derrick
Rose become this deadly three point where this is one
of the most remarkable comeback stories. Like it's one thing
(50:07):
to come back, it's another thing for a guy to
come back. Remember his last two teams he basically bailed
on right like New York he disappeared on and they
got rid of him. Then Cleveland, you know, midway through
the year he disappeared on, and then he was in Minnesota,
and then he's working out at like a you know,
a local workout club, and they resigned him to a
really minuscule deal. And of course there was the well
(50:29):
TIBs believes in him. But all of a sudden, now
he is fifty in a game and he had seven
threes last night. This is how when did this happen? Well?
I think, first of all, he's healthy for the first
time in a long time. I've seen he and Tips
have talked about the fact that it's the first time
in five years he didn't spend the off season rehabbing
from some surgery or another. I think that's one thing.
(50:51):
I think the other thing is and it really speaks
to the power of confidence, and it speaks to from
an elite NBA perspective, the gap between showing up and
playing and dominating has a lot to do with your
thought process and your belief of self. And it's really
obvious Derek is back to feeling that he's capable of
(51:11):
the things that Tips is telling him he's capable of doing,
and he's going out and modeling that right now. I'm
I'm just super excited for the kid because to see
him healthy again and to see him playing the game
at this level from where he was during his stent
with Cleveland. I never would have predicted this. No, I
I would not have have have either. Um, I can't believe.
(51:32):
I mean, I get like, look, Andrew Wiggins has a
reputation of being a guy super talented, but whether it's
soft or doesn't have the desire to take over late call.
Anthony Towns has some of that reputation as well. Some
of that's been helped by Jimmy Butler in the way
in which he's tried to get himself out of town,
and then they lived down to that reputation last night
in the game that I think most NBA fans are watching.
(51:55):
What's your read on what's going on and how they
fix it in Minnesota? Well, relative to how they fix that,
Jimmy Butler is going to have to get traded at
some point, and they're just gonna have to come to
grips with the fact that they're not going to get
a deal that feels like full value. And and that's
because of the circumstance that in large part the organization
(52:15):
and ownership created. It's also in large part because of
what Jimmy created, and because those two things are involved,
and they're not all in lockstep. He's going to go
away eventually, and every day he's there, he's able to
block out the noise and go out there and just hoop.
Carl and Wiggs they're not, and so it's fairly obvious,
(52:36):
and in particular in the Carl case, he's shaken by
all of the turmoil. He's not enjoying showing up the
work every day. He's got the opposite of what Derrick
Rose has going right now. He does not feel an
enormous amount of confidence coming from the people around him,
and he's offensively, I think, playing down to that. Defensively,
(52:58):
he's a little bit better version of himself. He's locking
some more shots. But when it comes time to know
that I'm the alpha and it's my turn to take over,
he doesn't have any of that, and I don't think
he's going to as long as Jimmy's there. So if
you don't want to trade him for the sake of
getting rid of Jimmy himself, then you need to do
it for the sake of saving the young guys, and
(53:18):
in particular Carl, because I think Carl's Carl's upside is
so significant. If you get the best version of him.
You could count on him to be a number one
or a number two on a final four, conference finalist
type of team. I don't look at Wigs in the
same way, and I don't think he's as much. I
(53:39):
don't think the way he's playing has anything to do
with the turmoil. I just think that's who he is.
I'm sure you watch Duke. I'm sure like the rest
of us and j R. J. Barrett, you know, it's
like everyone's talking about Zion but most people hold on R. J.
Barrett in even higher regard in terms of being an
NBA prospect. But let me ask you about Zion. How
(54:00):
concerning to somebody who's evaluated NBA players in NBA roster
and NBA draft for years, how concerning is it that
he's two pounds? If he had an injury history, it
would be really concerning. Um the weight in and of itself,
the body type sort of allows for it. So if
it's not causing him injuries throughout his lifetime, you're not
(54:23):
as concerned when it really becomes an issue. And this
happened with like Sean May leaving North Carolina. He's a
heavy kid who's also had foot problems. Well, just the
act of getting in good enough shape to not be
healthy or not to be heavy anymore, put so much
strain on your body you injure yourself and it just
sort of snowballs. You can never get right. If you
(54:46):
were already injured when you were heavy, it's really hard
to get into shape. This kid's played at this weight,
he's he's actually leaner now than he's been And this
kid's played at that level without any incident. So for me,
that's not a concern, and his body type allows for it.
My only concern was Zion is going to be durability
in the course of an ad two game season because
(55:09):
he's landing from such a ridiculous vertical leap that that
starts to take its toll on the knees. You know,
Vince Carter has talked about this a lot. It's it's
not the takeoff, it's the landing. Yeah. Um, if you
were drafting, how how close is it between those two?
I mean, I know there's I know there's other prospects
in that mix. How close is it between those two? Oh?
(55:30):
I mean I'd be throwing a dart right now. I
don't know either one of them well enough to know.
I feel like, you know, because this era of one
and done has made it so that we're not in
high school gyms anymore as as NBA personnel, and we
really only get to watch All Star events. You're making
the highest value judgments you make on lottery picks on
(55:50):
the guys, you know, the least it's really reflective of
are the problem in our model. Ye, no, I I
agree with it. It's one of the reasons I actually
like two and done. Everybody shouts at me that I'm
somehow un American for saying, Hey, I actually think it's
better for NBA teams and for the players to buy
in and to figure out how to play basketball and
not carry the burden of of having to if they
(56:12):
don't declare immediately somehow. Uh there, you know, they feel
like they failed, But well that's why I think. I
think they ought to be able to come right out
of high school without declaring, and if they go to
college they should have to stay two years so both
sides get what they want. Everyone's eligible right out of
high school, which would mean the man child is going
to get drafted out of high school and just like
(56:33):
he always did. I mean, when you look at Lebron,
you look at guys like Shack would have been able
to come right out of high school, KG came, Rut
out of house school, Kobe Bryant came. Those guys were obvious,
they were so much better than everybody else. They were
sort of touched by the hand of God. And you
went their their NBA guys, well, then they would go
to the NBA. Everyone else would sign to go to
college for two years and there's no declaring necessary, so
(56:56):
you don't have to have that sort of unsettling effect
in your life. The problem wouldn't be those top guys.
The problem would be everybody else thinking that they're of
that elk with the top guys right like that, right,
but we'll we'll tell him that as soon as they
get drafted or don't get drafted, right, I mean, they'll
know and then they would also be The entire second
round would be littered with guys that you take a
shot at and you stick in the g League. And really,
(57:18):
I don't I don't think that would happen because NBA
teams recognize how much can happen in that year if
you weren't top one, two, three, whatever, in in high school.
NBA teams haven't even really been watching you, so they're
not going to take flyers on guys like that in
the second round that are that are shouldn't have been
in the draft guys. They won't do that now. They
(57:40):
might the first couple of years. But what will happen
is eventually, using your idea, those two year guys will
populate the draft and they'll be so much further ahead
of these kids that it will all work itself out.
But yeah, it could be a couple of years of
adjustments for sure. David, great stuff. Look forward to seeing
an NBA TV and listen to the show that show

You know there's so much discussion about the Cowboys, and
I said it two days ago, it's two days. My
(59:57):
days are Today's Thursday. Right today, we got Thursday. I
up aout. Joe Bucks gonna join us next hour. Awesome,
Big thanks out to Jacob bowman Is who's worked along
with Cindy Katz and Ryan Music to to get so
many of those guests, the people that are calling those
games on Thursday. And Joe Buck's been super busy the
second time he's joined us. We've had Troy, We've had
Aaron Andrews, We've had everyone from Christina Pink last week
(01:00:17):
as well from that crew. Big game tonight, Steelers taking
on the Panthers. We talked about it, like, if the
Steelers lose, what does it mean for the Levy on
Bell situation. Bengals are still in contention. They got the
Saints this week, although the Bengals don't have a J Green.
They get the Saints at home. Saints off that huge game,
UM in a huge win over the Rams, but the
(01:00:39):
Saints are are a completely different team once they get
out in the open air and it's not a primetime game.
We know any Dalton's better when it's not primetime. Panthers
win there there, seven and two right there with the
Saints in the NFC South. Packers continue to fall behind
in the in the wild card, but the Panthers lose,
Saints aretain firm control, watch out for the surging Falcons.
(01:01:00):
Wild Card becomes wide open, and then of course the
Steelers would be six two and one in first place.
Feeling comes from Baltimore. Season was almost basically over and
since then without a J Green they lose this week.
All of a sudden, the Steelers start to think, maybe
we don't need Levian so huge game tonight. Um, It's
(01:01:25):
it's better to be a day early than a day
to late, right, It's the same when you're when you're
playing quarterback in the NFL, they tell you, like, never
throw across the middle of late ever. Ever, the same
with contractual situation, like better be early than be late.
And it feels like the Cowboys are late to this thing. Now. Look,
(01:01:46):
not having Travis Frederick, not having your center, that's your
sergeant hulk, that's your big toe, that's problematic. That's a
huge part. Every guy we've had on and we basically
we basically had our own podcast of guys that have
a pod cast. Have you guys noticed that? This week?
We had Ross Tucker, he's got a podcast, Brian ball
Dinger all they have a podcast. If not, he should.
(01:02:07):
We had Daniel Jeremiah who has a podcast, right, And
we had Ryan Rossili who has a podcast but I'm
just talking about former NFL guys. And we had Jeff
schwartzon right. She had four NFL guys and we're all
and they all said, like, look, that offense is not
clever at all and Dac isn't great at all, but
the offensive line hasn't been as good as supposed to be.
(01:02:29):
And not having Frederick at centers is probably the biggest
reason why. But in trying to keep an eye on
the future, think about this. Teams that have quarterbacks that
have expiring deals. Expiring deals as as bad as the
(01:02:52):
Blake Bortles thing is. You can sit there and go like, hey,
we can eat Blake Bortles money for one year. For
the Raiders, you can if we don't believe in Derek Carr,
we can eat what's seven point five million in dead
money for one year. But think about it, they are
yet to pay their quarterback who's gonna want an extension.
(01:03:14):
They are yet to pay their running back ezek Yellott,
who's gonna want and probably deserves an extension. This is
I do that. We do this in college basketball and
college football all the time, right where people try and
pick out who's gonna be good based upon how many
returning guys they have. Oh, I let me tell you
(01:03:36):
this year, we're gonna be awesome. Five returning starters. Well
what if those five returning starters suck last year, like
suddenly they're gonna suck less. It's possible they just aren't
that good, right that they didn't leave to go to
the NBA because they're not good enough to play in
the NBA, and they didn't leave your program because nobody
(01:03:56):
else wants them. Right, do this in college football like,
oh man, I got nineteen twenty two starters back. Yeah,
well what if they lost the three good starters and
the other nineteen are ah Cowboys are in this position.
I think Zeke is good, but Zeke hasn't been so
(01:04:17):
dynamic that inspite and that's part of the problem with
the running back in the NFL. He hasn't been so
dynamic that he can overcome the issues and offensive line
the issues with his quarterback, and the same is true
for his quarterback. Like I don't think the Packers there
three four and one. They should quite easily be at
(01:04:38):
least four three and one. And Mason Crosby miss makes
any of those five missed kicks, Um, they're they're five
there there four three in one and then you'd have
to think Aaron Rodgers can get him in a field
goal range. Against the Rams. There's a chance that they're
five two and one. And I'm not saying that that
Dak has to be compared with Aaron Rodgers. It this
(01:05:00):
is kind of like the Lebron James discussion. There hasn't
been a game this year where you're like, you know
what decks a dude, he's got it. That hasn't been
There hasn't been a moment where you're that's and if
you can't capture those moments, you don't have those moments
to call upon. I think the Cowboys are screwed because
(01:05:25):
they're gonna tell themselves, well, it's the coach. They're gonna
tell themselves it's Frederick. Meanwhile, they're gonna reinvest in two
guys and that's not I like Eazeke Yellett, but all
of this, he's the best back in the league. He
hasn't been able to overcome all the other stuff going
on in their franchise, and they're gonna double down on
Dak Prescott and oh yeah, by the way, Amari Cooper,
(01:05:48):
who's proven to be a good not great wide receiver.
He's gonna need a new contract otherwise he's just gonna
make fourteen million dollars next year. It's like a TV
It's like a TV company going like, yeah, you know,
the ratings aren't good. Nobody thinks the show is great.
(01:06:08):
Let's read up for a couple more years. Yeah, I mean,
fuck as. Sponsors aren't kind of getting queasy because the numbers,
so we're not able to command that the the ad
rates we used to. Let's double down on it. And
this is not like you know, Seinfeld's first year as
the show. Do you guys ever watched Seinfeld's first year
or the pilot at least or even the pilot of Friends,
(01:06:30):
you guys watch it? Yeah, the characters are different, right,
Monica and the pilot of Friends was whiny, her hair
was different, she was getting money from her dad. She
just she wasn't the confident, beautiful woman that she became
when it was Ross and Rachel. And when they get
back together, right, they had to change. You go back
(01:06:53):
to the first the pilot of Seinfeld and George was
a ladies man, Georgia the ladies man. They tinker with
some things they fixed. This is not like a pilot.
It's not like we and and and here's the maybe
the biggest problem the cowboys have and the packers have
had this problem in the past. When you go to
(01:07:16):
a new company, the thing you have to be most
cautious of is telling people in charge that the people
that they hired aren't that good. A matter of fact,
I would encourage you to never do that. Never do that.
You can't go to new company even if they think
you're awesome, right, like they hired They go, hey, John Ramos,
(01:07:38):
we think we've heard you on Fox Sports Radio for years.
X y Z Radio wants to double yours. How are
you come in there? Like all right, man, what do
you think You're like, Wow, I've been listening to x
y Z Radio and your guys are awful. And they go,
that's that's incredible, fear thank you tell me why they're
offer Like, well, they're not paired there. You got board
officers are falling asleep, you got producers that don't have
(01:07:58):
any connections. You got a host that don't all how
to set up topics like I've been doing this a
while and this is not great. Like man, that's they're
jotting down. This is great. And then you walk out
the door and you're like, f John Ramos, like I
hired the guy who you're talking to. Hired all those people.
So we can sit here and say, like, I don't
(01:08:18):
think dex onland Deck's the top twenty quarterback in the NFL.
I just don't, and you're gonna pay him at top
five quarterback money because that's what new contracts look like.
Remember the Dallas Cowboys in there going like, no, listen,
it couldn't be Dak. I've seen him in thirteen games.
Couldn't be Zeke we drafted him forth in the draft.
Couldn't be those two guys. Couldn't be our offensive line
we invested all that money. It's definitely not because if
(01:08:41):
you're calling into question their skill level, their talent level,
you're calling the question to people who evaluated that talent level.
Here's e Zekei Elliott when asked about their game against
the Eagles this Sunday. Yeah, um, I mean we got
well one and being a division game, you know, it
(01:09:03):
makes it that much more important. And uh so I
may definitely the ones must win and they've they've all
become Mustwitz, They've all become Muswitz. Get to Dan Buyer
with what else is going on in sports? But to
NFL news a theme in New England. Patriots ted n
Rob Gronkowski limited in practice today. Asked was wide receiver
(01:09:24):
Julian Edelman and running back Sony Michelle and wide receiver
slash running back Cordell Paterson. The Titans take on those
New England Patriots coming up on Sunday Tonight, It's Week
ten Panthers and Steelers covered starting at seven thirty Eastern
time on Fox from Pittsburgh. Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown
started for reckless driving this morning after allegedly going over
(01:09:47):
one hundred of miles per hour in a black porst
w p x I says Brown was stopped after he
drove pasted an officer, and the Steelers say they are
aware of the incident. Colts running back Marlon Mack limited
in practice with a hamstring injury, while Chiefs i'm backer
Justin Houston is expected to play Sunday against Arizona, returning
from a hamstring strain. A little bit more clarity of
the Jets quarterbacking situation. Todd Bowles, the head coach, today
(01:10:10):
saying Sam Donald won't start against the Bills. That was
reported yesterday. Josh McCown's going to get the start on Sunday,
but Donald hasn't been completely ruled out because of a
sprained foot. He could serve as the backup on Sunday.
In Major League Baseball, Can Rosenthal of the MLB on
Fox reports the Cardinals aren't as he aren't as interested
in free agent outfielder Bryce Harper, as it may seem
(01:10:33):
well tonight in the NBA Thundertake on the Rockets. No
Russell Westbrook for okay, see he remains out with a
sprained ankle. Doug, We're not that interested. We're not that
We're not that end you know that. Then you want
how much? No thanks, We're just looking right. Just just
just he doesn't seem like a cardinal anyway. No, he
(01:10:54):
seems like the anti cardinal. Yeah. Um, you do know
they invented the game of baseball. Yeah, just you don't
believe me, just just ask him. Of course, Dan buy
are a big Milwaukee Brewer fan. Uh. I heard this
from Paul Pierce last night Timberwolves lost the Lakers. They
need him to get more assertive. You look at his
numbers with Jimmy Butler as compared to when Jimmy Butler sits.
(01:11:17):
He needs to come in with that same aggression like, look,
I'm the guy, I'm the best score, I'm our low
post presidence, demand the ball. It's I feel like he
sits out there and floats. It has nothing to do
with the system. He has to command that he knows
where his spots are on the floor, and he can
tell coach he's the franchise player. You should have that
constant communication with your coach. UH. I struggle with to
(01:11:40):
Paul Pierce thing who I've roomed with at abc D
camp back in high school, I played against, played with
UH in high school all star stuff, and in in
high school I struggle with Paul Pierce because Paul Pierce
said that he thinks Duke could be Cleveland, the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Right when when you say that, I struggled to take
anything else you say, seriously, but for this moment, at
(01:12:01):
least for that silly argument, because that's all it is.
It's silly. It's silly. There might be three NBA players
who will probably develop into good NBA players, maybe great
NBA players on Duke's team, as opposed to Cleveland has
grown men and there are fifteen NBA players. It's not close.
(01:12:21):
Wouldn't be fun now, lessen if you start to have
that argument with me, I stopped listening. Please don't say
Alabama could beat anybody. Please don't say Duke could beat somebody.
They just couldn't. But I saw these stats about carl
Town's and and so I'll give Paul a pass because
(01:12:43):
he didn't cover college basketball. He hadn't played college bassball.
And sometimes everybody says and does crazy stuff sometimes and
TVs on, I just take a TV camera and walk
around a football stadium and flashed on. Somebody ask him,
that's what Jaywalking does, right. You ask you a question,
and Jay asked Jay Lena would ask somebody a question,
and they uh uh, they just give you some crazy answer.
(01:13:04):
People saying do crazy stuff. But Carl stats Town Carl
Town stats when Butler doesn't play this year, twenty seven points,
eight and a half assists, eight and a half rebounds,
three assists. He's shooting fifty four from the field. He's
shooting excuse me, he's shooting somehows Surrey got like I
(01:13:32):
have a Devil Serre series, Like okay, Carl Anthony towns Is.
He's shooting from three like he's averaging fifteen a game
with Butler, ten a game with Butler ten rebounds a game,
which is a little bit more because he's not getting
the ball, so he's having to get get it somewhere else.
(01:13:53):
Forty and a half percent and forty six percent from three,
All those numbers are down with the exception of rebounds
are up by one and a half when Ammy Butler place.
And I think Jimmy Butler is a really good player,
but great players make everybody around them better. They elevate them,
and they don't just elevate them statistically necessarily. Sometimes they
elevate them, as David Griffin told us, in terms of
(01:14:15):
their confidence. And that's not what Jimmy Butler's doing. So
Jimmy Butler can be right and can be wrong all
the same time. Right, like, he's not incorrect that Carl
Towns has to be tougher, Paul Pierce isn't wrong that
Carl Towns has to demand the ball more. Hey's not wrong.
(01:14:37):
But whatever and however he's doing it is not getting
the best out of him, not getting the best out
of And that's why this That's why as much as
I'm not a huge Carl Towns fan, because I don't
think he's all about ball. I don't think he's that killer.
I don't think he has that mentality, and most people
in the NBA think that. I do think he has
(01:14:59):
an immense amount talent and Butler's inability to connect when
they're on the floor at the same time is so
incredibly apparent, and Butler doesn't have that god given talent.
They called Townsend count up. Next, Dan Patrick says that
Bryce Harper reminds him of Odell Beckham Jr. You'll get
his thoughts then mine. Be sure to catch live editions

of The Doug dot Leaps Show week days at noon
Eastern three pm Pacific. Previously on The Doug god Leap Show,
Greg Costell he joins us in the Doug Gottlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. What does that mean for
the head coach? Most importantly, the reality is this. Jerry
Jones has come out said they're extending Dak Prescott. So
(01:15:42):
he's their quarterback. So if he believes that Dak Prescott
for whatever reason, is not playing up to what he
believes Jerry that is that Dak is, then that usually
means to get a new coach. Teams tend to get
a new coach quicker than they get a new quarterback.
No question, I guess do you agree with You watch
the tape so and the tape does not lie. Does
(01:16:02):
the tape say that Dak Prescott should absolutely be extended? Well,
here's a question. I don't think there's a lot of
mystery about Dak Prescott. I think Dak Prescott is probably
more along the lines of the middle of the road
quarterback that meets people around him, and that's fine. There's
there's more guys like that than stars. You can win
with guys like that as long as you understand what
they are. If you're not going to resign him, then
(01:16:24):
you have to decide who's going to play quarterback. See
it's always easy to say, go out and get another guy,

At this time in the Doug gottlab Show, we like
to play for you a portion of a previous show
Fox Sports one, Fox Sports Radio. We call it now,
what does the Fox Say? Dan Patrick on Fox Sports
(01:17:06):
Radio earlier today had this to say about Bryce Harper's
free agency. Who are the guys where you go. I
gotta go see that guy. I mean, even Mike Trout,
as great as he is, he's not flamboyant. He's just
he's just a great ballplayer. Bryce Harper's giving you a
look like there's a brand there, Mike. Mike Trout doesn't
care about that brand. Mike Trount's a better player. But
(01:17:30):
Bryce Harper is a better brand. And Bryce Harper is
going to make the Phillies relevant. They're gonna be on
national TV. You're gonna tune in to see them. Um.
You know there's the difference in is I sometimes look
at Julio Jones, he would be Mike Trout, and then
I look at Odell Beckham Jr. And he would be
Bryce Harper. It's a brand. Look at that guy. He's incredible,
(01:17:52):
he's so much fun. Meanwhile, you just see the guy
who does it every single day, Dan and Dale weekend
and weekend. Yeah, somehow Trout gets this, gets this reputation
as the guy who people one don't go to sea
in two isn't flamboyant. Like, Look, Dan's coming out next
(01:18:12):
week and I'll ask him dollars and donuts. He hadn't
seen Trout playing person, because if you've seen Trout play
in person Ryan music, you have you're an Angel fan,
as am I. When he comes up to bat, then
the whole place change. Yeah. And not only that, have
you seen the record that the Angels have had over
the past few years. And it's not as if no
(01:18:36):
one goes to the game. So why do you think
that they are even having anyone show up and buy
any sort of tickets? Right? I just I think Bryce
Harper is really really good. I don't think like Bryce
Harper comes to play. They play the Dodgers this year
like people in sawence because the Nationals, Like, I don't,
I don't think here's any Aaron Judge is probably the
only guy. Maybe maybe just base ball hasn't done a
(01:19:01):
great job, and it's also not a great sport for
individuals like that. It's just not I mean, even a
picture like Clayton Kirk Kershaw, a day Kershaw, like even
a picture he's really good. There's not gonna be any hits.
It's gonna be boring, and you can't anybody and you
remember you're you're you're listening to somebody whose son plays
(01:19:22):
on two different travel Baseball teams right now. I spend
many of my nights at like last night picking him
up from baseball, and today he's got another team's baseball practice.
The terms like, I'm not a baseball hater, I'm just
a realist over like, let's say the greatest pictures, the
Verlanders of the world, the kerse Shaws of the world.
You know the um uh you name it, what's his name?
(01:19:45):
With the Nationals? Why am I with the two Max
Scherzer of the world. Like, Okay, even even if those
are the guys you go to see, you can't really
tell if it's a ball strike when you go in person,
Like I never I never under stand baseball fan was like, oh,
that was a strike? Like, dude, you're sitting I don't
(01:20:06):
know a thousand yards away. How could you tell pH
it was a strike? Oh I saw it. I know
what a strike looked like. You have no idea. The
same people who boo when you throw the first base boom,
how dare you hold the runner on? Anyway? This idea
that Mike Trout is like, he's all right, he's just solid.
(01:20:29):
He's he's like he's Joe Flacco or something. Hey, how
you doing? Not the case, and that Bryce Harper somehow
Odell Beckham Jr. Also not the case, just because he's
got a good beard and good look and seems to
hit the ball far. Um, A little bit of us
is an US problem, right, Like we're caught up in
shiny things, Oh, shiny shiny things. And maybe Mike Trout
(01:20:53):
isn't a shiny thing, but I will tell you that
when he when he is playing, you absolutely know when
a ball is hit the center field when he's that bad,
because it's a totally different energy in the place. I
don't know if that's not flamboyant, but there's definitely a
different energy. Um. And that's why I would never I
just I couldn't pay Bryce Harper because he's not that productive.
(01:21:15):
He's been hurt a lot, and he's just not that productive.
I actually think more of Mike Trout's ability to be
productive on a bad team than I do Bryce Harper's
ability to not be as productive to take a bunch
of walks in a good team. He sees better pitches
than Trout does and does less with them. Who is
(01:21:36):
the if somebody comes to town and part of this
is just sports and branding, Like the thing about baseball,
is you only get like three or four at bats,
three or four bats, like I was telling my son.
My son's left handed. So one of the teams, he's
the like the second first baseman, and he's probably the
(01:21:57):
second or third pitcher, and otherwise he's playing in the
outfield sometimes to play my third base. He's a very
good fielder, and he's like, Dad, I mean, I only
what's the purpose of me playing the appfield? Was like, buddy,
if you're not playing first, you're not playing pitcher. You're
gonna play the outfield in the future. So he's actually
doing you a favor. It's like, yeah, but it's boring.
I go, Yeah, it's baseball, dude. Get up there, don't
(01:22:22):
go don't go down looking, go down hagging, and get
out there and catch everything you can. Back up everybody.
Whereas basketball, think of all the guys and like even
the Hornets come to town. Uncle see kemba play See
if he'll makes somebody fall down a crossover. Ed Warner
joins the show. Is Jerry Jones really going to extend
(01:22:43):

What Up Doug Gottlieb Show Sports Radio Huge, huge hitch
(01:23:05):
game in Pittsburgh tonight. As Levy on Bell hovers, He's
like a helicopter parent, right, just waiting to come on
in and swoop on and go. I'm there. But do
they need him? Will he actually return new details into
his contract which leads something to believe he he won't
ever come back to Pittsburgh. Got more on that. Joe
(01:23:29):
Buck's gonna join us upcoming, the Emmy Award winning play
by play voice of Thursday Night Football and of course
the voice of the World Series. You know what I'm
gonna ask him, right, Ramos, I'm doing play by play
first time ever. Who better to ask right than Joe Buck.
He's gonna send me the tape and then he's going
(01:23:51):
to crush me. That's that's what's gonna happen. Um Edward
Or joins us. He's a longtime NFL insider, just knows
more than the rest of us, and his is kind
enough to join us on a weekly basis and share
all that knowledge at edward or r f a is
his Twitter handle. Check out the Doomsday podcast a great one.
(01:24:13):
I I promise you won't feel cheated if you download
and spend some time and listen to Edward or joined
us Thursday Night Football and I want to get to
your thoughts on Dez on what you're hearing the backlash
after that Cowboys loss on Monday Night Football. But but
let's start in Pittsburgh where Thursday Night Football is a
really good game, Panthers taking on the Steelers. Levian bells
(01:24:34):
in town. But there's new reports that his contract, he
may not have to ever report and he'll still be
priced out of remaining in Pittsburgh. What are you hearing
about if and when Levian will show up? Yeah, Doug,
the only the only thing we know for certain with
Levian Bell is that if he wants to play this season,
he has to play for the Steelers. And if he
(01:24:55):
wants to do that, he has to report to the
Steelers by next Tuesday at four pm Eastern to be
eligible to play under the Collective Bargaining Agreement. So the
clock is certainly running on that. I think it's interesting
that for as terrific a player as he has been
over the years, and I think most people would say
(01:25:16):
he's one of the top three running backs in football.
That it's pretty clear right now that the Pittsburgh Steelers
have no real interest in returning him to his team,
and I really think it's been that way since Week
one when we heard all the criticism from his offensive linemen.
Uh It continued into the middle of the season when
Ben Roethlisberger said, look, even if Levian comes back, we
(01:25:39):
need to, you know, make sure James Conner still has
a role that is on the field contributing based on
the way he's played. And then the other day after
the game, you have coach Mike Tomlin saying we want volunteers,
not hostages. So it's very clear that the Steelers are
very comfortable with the chemistry that they have, with the
talent that they have uh um, and that they have
(01:26:01):
no real interest in getting Levian back in their uniform
or in their locker room, and perhaps feeling league that
he could be a detrimental to their cause at this point. Okay,
but but he shows up and he signs that franchise tender,
he They're gonna play him aren't they. Well, they'll have
to honor the contract, they'll have to pay him. They
don't have to play him, and they don't have to
(01:26:22):
give him a starter's role, and they they don't have
to give him the role that he had before when
he decided to, you know, put his own financial interest
ahead of those of his team, and if I mean
obviously misplayed it. Um you know, it's not totally compatible,
as we've discussed previously, with what happened with him at
(01:26:44):
Smith back in. But what happened with him at Smith
back in when he missed the first two games, the
Cowboys couldn't function offensively without him. They were defending a
Super Bowl championship, and they lost two consecutive games, the
last one miserably at home, and there was an inordinate
amount of public pressure and even more importantly pressure from
(01:27:05):
Jimmy Johnson and the leaders on the Cowboys team to
bring him back in salvage the season. And that simply
doesn't exist in this case with Levian Bell. I mean,
James Connors had four games where he's had at least
a hundred yards rushing, fifty yards receiving in a touchdown.
That's the most games by any player in a single
season in NFL history, and the season is only half over.
(01:27:26):
Edward are joining us in the Doug Gotlib Show on
Fox Sports Radio. It's interesting you bring up those old
Dallas cowboy days because the man calling the plays then
is the man calling the plays now for the Carolina
Panthers in North Turner. Um. But but this feels like
a little bit of a departure right using your quarterback
(01:27:46):
as more of a running weapon. I know that that
that he's made Cam Newton better and more efficient, but
some of this is even going away from Norv's kind
of old school stuff. How unique is a Norv's doing
to North Turner in Carolina. Well, when we think of
of north Turner and we know he's proven himself over
(01:28:08):
time as one of the great offensive coordinators and play
callers in the NFL. That's why Trademan, you know, had
him give his induction speech to the Hall of Fame.
That's how much he meant to his career. He also
coached Drew Brees. He also coached um a Philip rivers Um,
So he's not really been often associated with a quarterback
(01:28:30):
who has Cam Newton's unique skill set. And I think
a lot of people were puzzled about why that would
be a good fit for North Turner and whether, quite honestly,
it would work at all. But obviously he has a
long history with the head coach there Ron Rivera. Uh.
He got to bring his own son in as one
of the assistant coaches. He's coaching the quarterbacks. And I
(01:28:52):
think the thing that Norv has done so well that's
been so important to the development of Cam Newton is
you know, he was always a I who was in
a erratic passer in terms of completion percentage, and too
often that showed up on Keith down situations and would
determine the outcome of the game unfavorably for Carolina. But
with the techniques that the NORV has used to develop
(01:29:17):
his skill set, Cam Newton is now completing ten more
of his passes uh than he ever had before. So
that's one of the things I think that's unique that
Norv has brought to that team, in addition to you know,
figuring out just the right way to use Christian McCaffrey,
who's a unique weapon. That's the voice of Edwarder, who
joined us in the Doug Gotlib Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:29:39):
The Cowboys were running the football well and couldn't take
enough advantage of the turnovers that they created in the
first half to get a commanding lead, and then it
all fell apart in the second half. What's the real
reaction been to Dallas following that devastating home home loss.
I'm gonna Monday Night football. Well. I think for the
(01:30:00):
most part, Doug, that Jason Garrett lost the fan base
some time ago, um I and and to a certain degree,
I think he's beginning to lose Jerry Jones. UM. As
much as Jerry Jones has poured into this relationship with
Jason Garrett as his head coach, as much as he's
believed in him and supported him publicly, the other night
(01:30:20):
was really the first time I've heard Jerry be so
suspect after a game and say that he didn't like
the way the team played, saying that, you know, I
don't like losing the game, but if the performance losing
the game had been better, I wouldn't feel the way
I do now. And so you know, this comes after
(01:30:42):
Jerry made a couple of unusual moves during the bye
week going into this very game. I mean, they had
two weeks to get ready. The front office identified a
couple of weaknesses. They fired the the offensive line coach,
which marked the first time since Garrett had been the
head coach that they've made a coaching change in the
middle of the season. Staff They traded a first round
pick for Amari Cooper, so Jerry expected big things and
(01:31:05):
instead he was rewarded with one of the most disappointing
losses given as you said, they essentially the defense created
turnovers on the Titans first two possessions, uh deep in
the in the Titans end of the field. The Cowboys
only scored on one of them. Uh. And instead of
having a seventeen nothing lead and forcing the Titans to
play from behind, the kind of game that they're really
(01:31:25):
ill equipped to succeed at, the Cowboys found themselves two
quarters later playing from behind. And they're not very good
in that capacity either. So I think it was a
very devastating loss. And then you know, if you if
you look even more closely at it, you know, Ezekiel
Elliott doesn't get m a touch in the entire fourth quarter,
and Cole Beasley doesn't get a pass thrown his way
(01:31:47):
until there's four minutes left in the game. And then
they can't get him the ball often enough. I think
there's a lot of concern about the play calling, and
with the deterioration of the team occurring on Jason Garrett's
side of the ball, I think that does not uh
indicate that he's going to be here beyond the season.
He Jerry doubled down on that as well, saying that
(01:32:08):
Dak's going to get a contract extension. Look, he said
things and done other things in the past. How how
fervent are his beliefs in Dak Prescott long term? Well,
I think he does believe in Dak Prescott, and I
think trading a first round pick for Mariti Cooper is
a real public demonstration of that, in that if you
(01:32:31):
don't believe you have your starting quarterback for the future,
then you might want to save that draft pick to
go get a quarterback in the top part of the
first round uh next year. And instead he spent that
draft collateral and and used it on something to help
Dak be better. Uh, and it had mixed results, I
thought the other night. But you know, I think Jerry
(01:32:53):
is rhetorically just you know, kind of trying to support
Dak Prescott in this crisis of confidence that he seems
to be suffering right now, and whether he intends to
honor that at the end of the season remains to
be determined. I just know this. They don't have to
do anything on Dak's contract until um the end of
(01:33:15):
next season. He signed through. This is just the first
time they can renegotiate his contract if they choose to
do so. If I were Jerry Jones, knowing what I
know now and seeing what I've seen to this point,
I would not extend Dak Prescott. But I also would
not necessarily give up on him as a long term
starting quarterback until I see him with the next coaching staff.
(01:33:37):
I agree with you, you don't. You don't have to
do anything, But there is the sense from some well
he's been playing, you know, starting quarterback on the cheap.
Those days are over. The second you can pay him,
you gotta pay him. I guess the I guess the
question could be, could you get him to take a
team a very very team friendly deal which still allows
you in the future to maybe make other plans if
(01:33:58):
he doesn't improve with the different coaching staff, and maybe
getting Travis Frederick back. I think that thing, that part
is fasting. I want to ask you really quickly, Um,
des may Or may not go for the Saints because
he ain't in football shape right Um, but he is
with the Saints. I just want to get your saying.
You know Dez really really well. I know him pretty
well from Oklahoma State and all the guys, all the
(01:34:20):
kind of connecting tissue whatever. Uh. I think he's got
a shot of working because they don't really need him.
But he can look good on a good team and
play with a great quarterback if he can just keep
his mouth shut and be willing to accept that he's
only going to get a couple of targets a game.
If that. What's your sense of if this works in
(01:34:40):
New Orleans? Well, first of all, Um, Sean Payton has
been interacting with since before the draft. He talked to
him two times before the draft, and he was interested
in signing him right after the draft, assuming they weren't
going to draft a receiver, And as it turned out,
they drafted receiver in the third round, that guy that
they still really like who's playing for them now. And
(01:35:01):
so he called Dez back and he said, Hey, we're
gonna see how this works out. So he was kind
of playing time this guy can merit uh and and
address whether we still have a need, you know, early
in training camp. Uh So then what happened was, uh,
they experienced some injuries, right, they lost uh Ted again,
who they expect to get back at some point this season.
(01:35:22):
And more recently than that, Cam Mereth his need didn't
improve and ultimately he needed more arthurscopic surgery. So that
created the need. So Sean brought him in for a workout.
They were impressed with it, even though, like he said,
he was, you know, maybe five pounds heavier than they
would like, but that's probably not uh in an inordinate
amount of weight gain for an athlete who's not training
with the team, he's not practicing. I think that goes
(01:35:44):
away pretty quickly. The thing that Sean Payton told Deaz is, look,
I'm not gonna let you fail. I let me worry
about the part about staying up until two o'clock in
the morning to figure out how to best use you
and present you to the defense in a way that
we're going to be able to exploit your talent. Obviously, Doug,
he's he he'll he'll never get more favorable matchups than
(01:36:07):
he's gonna get with the Saints. I mean their first
priorities are Kamara and Mike Thomas. So Dez is gonna
get great matchup opportunities. He's with a one of the
greatest quarterbacks statistical quarterbacks in the history of our game,
playing at the very highest level of his career, uh,
completing uh you know, historically accurate number of passes. He's
(01:36:30):
playing for one of the most creative offensive minds in
all of football in Sean Payton. He's playing on a
team that just beat the Rams and has a chance
to go win a Super Bowl ring And oh guess
what in three weeks you get to go to Jerry
World and play in front of Jerry Jones, who cuts
you and put you in this predicament where three weeks
(01:36:52):
after free agency started and all the big money was gone,
you were suddenly available. So I think everything's on desits
and I think he's realistic about it. You would you
would hope that he's been humbled somewhat by what happened,
uh and all this time that he's missed and he
didn't get the big money offer that he probably expected. Um,
but I think that's in the future. If he can
perform well in this role, and I don't think he'll
(01:37:15):
have a problem accepting the role. I I know Dez.
I know he's been a distraction at times, and I've
criticized him when he has been um But ultimately, this
guy is really about winning, and he'll win with the Saints.
Great stuff, ed as always incredible insight and by the way,
I get to use that Sean Payton had been contacting
Himston's after the after the draft when I called it,
when I called the Saints game this weekend on radio,
(01:37:37):
You're You're the best. Help you out on that, Edward.

Doug Gotler show Fox Sports Radio to the top teams
(01:38:20):
in the NFL clash Tonight, Steelers host the Panthers Thursday
Night Football. It really is the game of the week.
It's the best game of the week on Fox. Tonight
coverage begins seven thirty pm Eastern Time, four thirty Pacific
on Fox. Will get a chance to see the Pittsburgh Steelers,
but we won't see Levan Bell at least for for
this week. Joe Buck joins us Emmy Award winning play
(01:38:41):
by play voice Fox not just the NFL, but also
most recently the World Series. Um, what's it like in
Pittsburgh with with Levan lurking out there playing basketball down
the street but not actually at the facility. Yeah, I
don't know, It's it's weird. Uh, you know, he's he's
(01:39:03):
walking around a sports club and pick up basketball, and
you know, I guess in some ways pushing the limits
on whatever he's gonna sign for. I assume he's gonna sign.
I don't know. I don't get the sense that these
Steelers really care. Uh if if he signs that said,
he's one of the best players in the NFL and
(01:39:24):
was an All Pro last year, So I think part
of them is hurts. You know, you read like the
Castro and different guys in the offensive line, and he's
kind of tired of the questions and tired of the
topic and kind of if you're not with us, then
forget you. But the other side of it is, I mean,
he's one of the best players in the league, so
you can you can be mad and not want them around,
(01:39:45):
and some guys do, some guys don't, I'm sure. But
if he comes in and he plays down the stretch
and he's fresh, uh, who knows. I mean, maybe he's
a guy that throws them over the top. So it's
just kind of like this in between land right now,
and nobody really knows a how it works out the
rest of this year and be what his status is
(01:40:06):
going into next year, especially if he doesn't report and
he never ends up playing it down. In two thousand eighteen, Uh,
Joe Buck joins us, you weren't you weren't driving with
a B when he was going on a hundred miles
a now right, that's that's that's not your style. I mean, uh,
to go a hundred miles an hour? No, I'm no,
(01:40:26):
I'm I'm I'm ten and two. I obey all speed limits.
I don't ever, I don't ever push it whatsoever. In fact,
my wife, who is uh now a first time mom,
used to always make fun of me for my grandpa driving.
And once we had kids and our boys are six
(01:40:48):
months old. Now all of a sudden she drives like
grandma and she's like, oh, now, I see where you
got it, because I have older daughters, so when they
were little, I think I went from lead foot to
mr Car And no, I would not drive that way,
nor be in a car at that speed. You know,
It's it's weird. This team was supposedly so distracted the
(01:41:10):
start of the year, but it almost feels like a
lavy On thing. And maybe it's James Conner's personal story.
Obviously what happened to synagogue, you know, which is not
far away from the stadium, Like all of those things,
it feels like all these things have been kind of
galvanizing to the Steelers. Is that too hokey kind of
radio guided thing? To say or is there some reality
to all the distractions have somehow made this a better
(01:41:33):
football team. Yeah, I think so. I think there's something
to that. I don't think you know, it's okay to
be hokey. I think there's something to that. With regard
to Connor, I mean, I can't think of a guy
who's easier to root for in the NFL than James Conner,
considering you know, he's from Erie, he played at Pitt,
(01:41:53):
He's been through Lyn Palmer. Uh. You know, it was
a third round pick. And he comes back and and
you know, he ended the year last year with a
knee injury, and then he get this chance, and and
he's basically one yard off the yards from scrimmage from
Levian Bell. The first time he won, uh, he won
(01:42:14):
All Pro. And so it's not like a fluke. I mean,
first of all, you realize how good this offensive line is.
But then yeah, I think they're rallying around that guy.
I think their cornerback is a rock U. I think
they've been through a lot in this community. I know
Ben was was personally uh touched and and heartbroken with
what happened in Squirrel Hill. Uh and and so yeah,
(01:42:38):
all those things come together, and they have a really
good coach. I mean the there there's a lot to
like here in Pittsburgh and what they've had three head
coaches since nineteen Uh, that that has to pay off
more times than none. I think that stability leads to
all this as well. What's Cam Newton been like? Uh? Fun,
(01:42:58):
you know, I think he's uh, you know, we've got
kind of a different in now there because obviously his
offensive coordinator is Norvs, who not only was Troy's offensive
coordinator when they've kicked it into gear in Dallas, but
inductor Troy into the Pro Football Hall of Fame. And
I think it's surprised Troy when Norv agreed to join
(01:43:18):
his offensive coordinator. I'm sure it's surprised Cam. But what's
come out now is, as we're halfway through the sea,
that is Cam at his best. And he's a former
league MVP. He's never had a quarterback rating like this,
he's never had a completion percentage like this, He's not
thrown interceptions. Uh, he's made him a better player, and
(01:43:39):
they've got a versatile, speedy offense. But I can get
you from a lot of different directions. Yeah, No, it's
it's really amazing, especially you know, look, North's tenure in
Cleveland wasn't great, his tenure in Minnesota wasn't great. And
like a lot of people, I'll just say, I mean,
Cam's not like Troy or Rivers or Breeze or some
(01:43:59):
of the other incredible success stories he's had. And he's
found a way to kind of morph his system to
fit what Cam does and what Christian McCaffrey can do
as well. And it's been incredible kind of a watch
at this stage in his career, NORV Turner doing some
different things, right. Yeah, I think it just points out
how smart he is. Um. I think the great coaches
(01:44:21):
mold to the talent they have around him. You know,
I'm a guy hard Blues fan, and I know he
won uh Stanley Cup. But Mike Keenan was a guy
in the NHL but always had to have his guys
around him. So Adam Creighton had a career in the
NHL because of Mike Keenan. By the end of Adam
Craton's time in the league, because he was just his
(01:44:42):
quote unquote type player. Well, Cam Newton is not a
Norv Turner quote unquote type player. He's not Rivers, he's
not Troy, he's not any of these guys. And yet
he's evolved. And we just did a game with the two.
Shawn's going at it, his offensive coordinators and two of
the most creative guys in sports, not just the NFL
call in plays with McVeigh and Peyton, and uh, you know,
(01:45:06):
then you got the sixties six year old North Turner
who is doing new things with new type players. And
good for him. He's adapted and I think he's having
a heck of a lot of fun too. That's what
Troy says. And again, those two are are extremely close.
The game tonight seven thirty Eastern for thirty Pacific on Fox.
It's a great one. Carolina Panthers come in to take
(01:45:29):
on the Pittsburgh Steelers. It's on Fox on Thursday Night Football.
I'm calling a game on radio for Compass Media Networks.
I'm calling the Bengals hosting the Saints. Never called the
game in play by play before. Um they called. They asked,
I said, sure, because I'm the idiot. The things he
can do everything, Uh give me, give me, I mean,
(01:45:52):
you're Joe Buck, I'm just me. Give me your best advice.
Why it's Ray Dio. Just say whatever you want, um,
and you know, if they match up your radio call
to the TV call, apologize later. If they don't, then
you end up having a hell of a game, you know.
(01:46:12):
And you're doing it with Brian Baldinger, who really doesn't
need to play by play guy. I used to do
games with Balding and he can talk from whistle to whistle,
so you basically are going to struggle to get a
word in edgewise. And then on top of that, just
always just always place where the ball is. I think
doing radio football is the hardest thing to do. But
(01:46:34):
were you doing this to me? Why are you sing
me out? I think it's it's just just because you
know it's it's everybody can picture a baseball diamond on
for you. You know they're moving. My dad used to
say they're moving from our right to our left. Flip backs,
you know, hand off to whomever and just always say
where the ball linds up and and that will buy
(01:46:55):
you time out tote and you look at your stats guy,
a gain of four, you look to your spot, are
tackled by Smith and then you set up the next
down at distance and that's all you have to do.
Baldy will talk the entire rest of the time. Okay,
why do we do the right to left thing? And
so somebody does the visualization deal? I think so, I yeah,
I I I always wondered that, and then I think
(01:47:17):
that's what I settled on, that that you you have
to picture in your mind. You have to be able
to kind of put yourself as a listener in the
seat of the guy calling it, and you can picture
it out in front of you. Because if if you
are saying they're going from their left to their right
to our right, and they say, you know, they toss
it out running to the left, you know, if they're
(01:47:38):
on that side of the far side of the field,
I don't know. I think it just helps you better
picture what the heck is going on if you're in
your car trying to visualize where the ball is. The
Great Joe Buck joining us giving me broadcasting lessons here
on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Do
I call the hash mark right there on the they're
running to the short side of the field, to the
wide side of the field, or don't even don't even
(01:47:59):
mess it? What in the NFL the hash marks. The
hash marks are too close. Nobody cares. What about formations?
Uh yeah, you can you know if if you want
to get into all that, then it becomes real wordy.
But you can say, you know, Drew Brees is in
the shotgun with Camara to his left. Um, you know
(01:48:20):
that that gives me a picture in my mind. Or
Breeze under center with Camara and you know whoever their
fullback is behind Zach Line behind him, and you know, yeah,
I think you have to set what it looks like offensively.
I don't think you have to mess with the defense
before the snap and afterward, who made the catch, who
made the tackle? How many yards? And what's the down
(01:48:41):
at just the rest of the rest of it. Just
lie Um. I'm sure you've seen Billy Madison. You know Billy.
He couldn't write the Z for zudo, right. Who's what's
the name in the NFL that gives you the most
difficulty pronouncing for just for an unknown reason? Um? Well,
what I do is what I would suggest you do,
(01:49:02):
and that is go through the pronunciations with the PR
guy before the game and write them all down phonetically.
So I don't really have any names like that that
that screw me up. But that's because I spell it
out on my spotting board, like use check is a
fullback in the NFL, and on my board it's y
(01:49:23):
O O Z dash c h E c K, which
couldn't be any further from the actual spelling. But just
give yourself a break and do it the easiest possible way.
All right, I got it, I got it. Um, I
think I'm set. I'm good. I got a spotting board,
I got a spot It will be fine. You did
(01:49:44):
make me super nervous, but that this is the hardest
thing that you can do. Could you could you? You
should have just said, of the piece of cake can
be fine, you're doing great, tell me how awesome bald
he is, and how you can talk? Yeah he can talk,
and uh yeah, I could have lied to you, but
I figure I'm gonna be honest with you with that
part of it. And then when you have a hell
of a game, you can you can, you know, hoist
(01:50:04):
one at the end of the night and say, hey,
you know what, I just had a hell of a
game doing the hardest thing there is to do. Hey, man,
have a great call tonight. Enjoy Pittsburgh thanks so much
for the advice. I appreciate it, all right, And so
check your pockets when you leave. Baldy is a little uh,
you know, clutchy clutchy, got it. I've had people accuse
(01:50:25):
me of that in the past. I just I just
mean like food and stuff. Like if you have loose
food that you're hoping to eat at halftime, it'll find
its way into Baldinger's backpack. Is he is he a
coffee guys? There something I can bring this stuck up
to him, like, you know, like, oh he likes he's
he's a Lotte guy. He's a coffee guy. You don't.
The only thing you need to do for Brian to
(01:50:46):
suck up to Brian is to just not talk a
lot to love you. Yeah, all this stuff is going
down on the pad. It's noted. You're the best. Thanks
for joining us, all right, Joe, Joe, John, he is
getting ready to call it thurs Night football. You got it,
We're good. Don't call hash marks. Don't call hash marks.
(01:51:07):
You don't have to get all describe e which is
kind of how I planted on it. Keep it keep
it simple, stupid, Thursday night football tonight. Joe Buck Troy Aikman,
Christina Pink Aaron Andrews, Panthers travel to Pittsburgh. Let's take
on the Steelers. Starts at seven thirty Eastern Pacific. Let's
(01:51:29):
get you to Dan buyer time and score another big one.
Does very very down in distance time and school distance.
And I do right to left, left to rights or
what I did games. I would also have at the
start of the game. What the teams are wearing. You know,
Saints and they're gold helmets, white jerseys, black pants. However
you will, you can say that as well. Not that
(01:51:51):
you wanted tips from me. I'm just saying you can
throw them out the door. So Week ten Panthers and
Steelers Tonight coverage on Box does begin at seven thirty,
as Doug just said. But the Steelers, I don't know
what they've got outside the field, entertaining to say the least.
An NFL Network report today said Levy on Bell and
his agent are evaluating their options to continue to hold
(01:52:12):
out for the rest of the season because of a
part of the c b A that I guess they
didn't know existed. This part of the c b A
would allow them to continue to have the third franchise
tag on Bell next season, which would force a team
to pay him twenty five million dollars. So, even though
he didn't play this year, because the franchise tag was
designated him designated for him, it's still counts. So now
(01:52:34):
Bell and his agent contemplating whether they'll leaven report by
Tuesday's deadline. Oh and Antonio Brown sided for reckless driving
this morning after allegedly going over one miles per hour
in his Black Force. Let's get you up? Did at
injury wise? In the NFL. Patriots on the road taking
on the Titans on Sunday in Nashville. Rob Gronkowski, Julian Edelman,
Sony Michelle, and Cordell Patterson all limited in practice today.
(01:52:57):
No practice today again for Chargers to it's event. Joey
Bosa still has that foot injury. Chargers have the Raiders
coming up on Sunday. Colts of the Jaguars running back
Marlon Mack limited practice with a hamstring injury. Chiefs with
a show down with the Arizona Cardinals on Sunday. That
spread Doug I think sixteen and a half in favor
of Kansas City and they're getting justin Houston back expected
(01:53:18):
to play returning from a hamstring strain. Thunderguard Russell Westbrook
out against the Rockets tonight because of a sprained ankle.
One of four games in the NBA. Pretty good schedule
actually tonight in the NBA Bux Warriors. Yeah, that's where
is that game. That's a golden state. So you've got that.
When I mentioned thunder and Rockets playing tonight as well,
(01:53:39):
Clippers and Blazers and Celtics and Sons. Sons are having
their own issues. But yeah, pretty good slate for a
light night. Yeah, good good night for a thursty. I
would encourage you to watch there's in a football and
then during the breaks you can flip flip over and
watch all of that other stuff and I'll pro in
some trouble off the field. No, not Antonio Brown, is it.
You'll find out next on The Dug Outlip Show. He's
(01:54:00):
sure to catch live edition, so the Doug God Leaps
Show week days at noon eastern three pm Pacific. Previously
on The jug God Leap Shots, Let's just welcome in
Ryan Ricillo. Zion Williamson is going to get so much
of the press because he just jumps off the screen.
But in the reality of the NBA. How close is
(01:54:20):
it between he and R. J. Barrett to be the
number one pick? Oh, I think it's really close. I
don't want to do this thing where it's hey, everybody's
going Zion. I want to be a Barrett god. But
you're absolutely right, like Barrett was insane. And the thing
about Zion that I thought is something all of us
and I didn't watch him high school, right, I don't
time to go to the showcase and check that stuff out.
He has a much more complete game than all the
(01:54:41):
stuff that we had seen, right, I think I watched
highlights and clicks to him for a year where I
go to have I ever even seen him take a
jump shot and it's passing and going and and is great.
But if I were in the front office, I think
I'm worry about the Zion's body, Like I don't want
you to get any bigger, dude, if you're this big
now and you have those hips, like I don't want
(01:55:01):
to turn I don't want you to turn into like
I'm trying to think of it, like Drew Gooden skilled out,
you know, Robert Tractor trailer. He was a guy that
like big, I'm not saying that is the guys I've
talked to you, Like, look the weight, it's gonna be
an issue. Like he's just he's think. If you missed
anything from the Doug god Leap Show, you can always
podcast by going to Fox Sports Radio dot com. Now
(01:55:24):

check out the All Ball podcast. You can download it
on the Herd Podcast Network, on iTunes or wherever podcasts
are available. In the meantime, let's get to the press.
(01:55:44):
The press. Damn bye. What he got my friend Sammy
Hagar one so that he can't drive fifty five? Antonio
Brown apparently showed he can drive one hundred or more
Steelers wide receivers. All right, okay, I'm to get to
the story. I'll finish it. Sighted today for reckless driving
after Alegedlie going over a hundred miles per hour in
(01:56:06):
his black post. Of course, Brown and the Selers taking
on the Panthers tonight. How fast was he going? It
was over a hundred, But there's no like exact report.
Does that's like he is weird? Yeah? Maybe because he
was saw the police officer. Yeah, but they always happened,
(01:56:26):
you know, like it was going down because he's star
but the cop was doing an auction. No, I was
doing the radar gun like all of a sudden. But
they always give you us. They always give you a speed.
They always go like you don't have fast, you're good.
I was like, I don't know, Um, why don't you
You're gonna tell me, You're gonna write it down, So
want you tell me? Boy? You're going a hundred and seven?
(01:56:47):
Like a hundred and sevent team feels worse than a
d one that I think when he gets to that point,
it's all the same, like one. What's the fastest you've
ever gone in the car? Uh? It was over a
hundred probably yeah when I was younger. Um on a highway, Yeah,
freeway in rural Wisconsin. What kind of car? Uh? Nothing fancy,
(01:57:15):
just just a car that didn't shake when it got
over a hundred? What kind of car? I don't know.
It's probably a grand day back then, Pat, granddad, grand
damn good car. I like that almost tell your gonna
go Chevy Baretta. That was my wife's first car. Ramos
fast as you ever going to cars? What? I think
it was one? Ten? What kind of car. It was
(01:57:35):
a had a turbo on it. I don't know what
it was. It was my friend's car. We're going to Vegas.
Was it Kit Michael, you're breaking all of the California
speed lost. I like how I said, over a hundred
and then John's minds one ten ten topper topper. You
didn't even think of a stupid definitely went ten ten.
(01:57:58):
Wasn't in a Baretta? What about you? Music? Fast year
gone oh one fifteen. At least it was in a Porsche.
It was sweet, uh so much faster than all I had.
I had a I had a Camaro in high school
that I got when I gotta signed a scholarship, I
got a Camaro. I got a car. Was our deal
(01:58:18):
Chevy Camaro t tops LT one engine, which is like
the low end Camaro Corvette engine. Was going over a
hundred fifty on the way to Paul Spring not smart, Yes, yeah,
that's oh. John Ram was checking in. He now went
one and fifty one miles per hour in his his turbomobile.
(01:58:39):
Um An NFL network report today said that Levy on
Ball did your did your turbomobile have like blue lights
underneath the purple lights? Underneath and a big wing. You
have a big wing. You push a button and just
said turbo on. He did Going Kit. He did Going
Kit and then I ejected my friend at the scene
and I drove it myself. John, that was a dream. Okay,
(01:59:03):
John's card. Mr Feeney talking to him all the time.
In the NFL Network report said Levian Bell and his
agent evaluating their options to continue the holdout for the
rest of the season. Touched on in a bit of
a little while ago. We have always knew, Doug that
if the franchise tag was placed on Levian Bell for
the third time, he would get the average of the
top five quarterbacks salaries in the National Football League. That
(01:59:26):
was always known. What we didn't know was that if
Levian Bell didn't report that that franchise tag would still count.
And that's what is his agent and he are overlooking
now to determine if he even wants to report to
the Steelers for the rest of the year. What would
you do if you're him? Well, if I sat out
this long, I wouldn't report at all. I mean, what's
(01:59:47):
the point. Uh, there's like six million dollars I know,
but he's already thrown away eight million dollars. So if
that's the I just losing team million dollars, losing eight
million dollars twit would you rather do? Well? I think
the whole thing is and you've got a chance to
play in the playoffs, may playing the Super Bowl. Doesn't
that matter at all? I think some of it does.
(02:00:10):
But I think the whole question was when the Steelers
had offered him five years seventy million at fourteen million
dollars per year, is something that he turned down? How
much is somebody else realistically going to give you? Is
someone going to give you seventeen million dollars per year?
I don't. I don't believe so. And I don't think
he thinks somebody will. I mean he thinks that any
beating he takes now it takes you where's like. I
(02:00:32):
think he thinks this is like, well, like this should
add another year at the end of my career. It's
not generally the way it was correct correct. I think
he's pot committed, honestly with this hold out. Oh I
love pot I love being pot committed. I'm all in whatever. Yeah,
how about this from Todd Bowls Today? We had heard
from the New York Datia. The News yesterday is saying
Sam Donald wasn't going to start against the Bills because
(02:00:54):
of his foot injury. Well, Todd Bowles confirmed it today,
but said Donald could be available to back up Josh
McCown with that sprained foot. Interesting, it is interesting. That's
a terrible football game. By the way, is that one
on Fox? No? I don't think you ever had that game.
I hadn't got Fox Sports too. I've had that game
(02:01:15):
in basketball. But back when Penn State Northwestern were terrible,
like three years in a row, when I was at ESPN,
I would get the call from this guy danced here, like, bro,
do me a solid Can you go to state college
Northwestern Penn State? And every year I got it was
like every year I got, I got stuck there because
of weather. Every year was the CBS game. Yeah, game sucks.
(02:01:37):
The answer to the trivia question in that game was
either a crispin or Evan Eschmeyer, Right, that's all you
could do. It was it was after both. Yeah, well
that was the trivia question. What former Northwestern players spent
eighteen years with the Wildcats um former current baseball players
throughout the league, including Justin verlain Or and Tory Hunter
calling out Red Sox advisor Bill James after his comments
(02:01:58):
on Twitter when he asked if a three million dollar
player was underpaid. James tweeted, quote, if the players all
retired tomorrow, we would replace them. The game would go
on in three years. It would make no difference whatsoever.
The players are not the game anymore than the beer
vendors are. End Quote that from Bill James, who ended
up deleading his tweet. Red Sox called the comments absurd
(02:02:19):
and inappropriate. Yeah, but like, look, here's the thing about
Bill James, Like, if you really listen to Bill James,
hey's that cook right? He just did. He believes that
based upon the numbers, like this is this, this is
what the number is saying. That's what it's gonna say.
And that's when you when you live, when you're a
rhodo geek, you're a rodo geek through and through. He
(02:02:39):
really believes that got Twitter Twitter ruined so many people's careers.
It's amazing. Uh. Finally, Dwyane Wade and wife Gabrielle Union
welcome their first child together to the world via a surrogate.
It's Union's first child wide his three kids from a
previous marriage. But they welcome to baby girl. That's why
Dwyane Wade didn't play less night against the Spurs. You
(02:02:59):
kids bag it out there and pressed. That was the press.
I do wonder about the whole circuit thing, right, Like
one of the cool things that your wife is pregnant
is like talking to her belly, right, like talking to
your belly. Your wife's sitting there and there's a lady
and her belly, and do you talk to her belly? Like?
That doesn't it's gotta be hard. Are you? Are you
hitting on her? You're talking to her belly. That's the
(02:03:20):
whole thing. Anyway. Who wins the night? Did Ramos? I
like the Panthers? Who wins and night? Ryan Music? Steelers, Uh,
Steelers are three point favorites. What about you? Buyers? I
like Steelers, Bigley, big Lee, Stug gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio,
