Speaker 2 (00:22):
I hope you're having a great day of The Doug
Gottlieb Show. Broadcast live, same bad time, same bad channel
every day. We're going over twenty years now, and we
got a lot to get to. The Packers come from
behind and end up smacking the Steelers late last night.
We'll talk about that during the show. Tom Telesco, former
GM of the Chargers and Raiders, will join us this hour.
(00:47):
You'll hear what we loved, what we hated from this
weekend in sports, and it was a full sports weekend. Wait.
Dear Jerry Jones said about his defense tonight, I actually
agree with him. I agree with him a lot to
get to World Series. Game three will be on a
way tonight. Dodgers took Game two after getting stomped in
(01:08):
Game one that wasn't a Friday night, so we'll see.
Obviously this is this, this becomes the swing game. You know,
we get some NFL talk about, we get some college
football talk about. Plus, this is the sports Equinox? Is
that right, Jase? Two Sports Equinox.
Speaker 3 (01:22):
Thirty second of all time, thirty second sports Equinox of
all time.
Speaker 2 (01:27):
And the basics of the sports equinox are of all
of the major all the professional sports are playing all
at once, right, That that's what it is. And Jason's problem,
and I agree with him, is are you really considering soccer?
But yeah, soccer, hockey, NBA, NFL. Is there college football tonight?
(01:51):
I don't know. Is there a college football to night?
Probably is. There's college football like every night. But I
guess we're only considering professional.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Only professionals sports. I'm willing to barely let hockey in.
I think in the nineties it was made a Major
four and barely anybody watches that sport. But soccer, that's
a reach. It's almost like when they're listing the five
things in the Sports Equinox and they get to the
MLS game. It's almost like when people say, after a
(02:20):
couple people die, that are famous. You know, they always
go in threes and then there's always a The third
one is always a stretch. Yes, you have two like
a listers and then a guy that worked, you know,
on a movie at some point.
Speaker 2 (02:36):
So you're thinking soccer as a stretch. I would agree
with you. Aki is kind of a stretch. But it
does make sense because it's been around long enough, it's secure,
it's cures enough in itself. So we'll get to the sports.
Equinox doesn't actually matter. Are you equinox or equinox guy?
Does seem like a tomato? Tomato potato potato. Getting a
new job can be so much easier with Express imployt professionals.
(03:00):
With Express, you'll have a local connection to the job market.
Get started at expresspros dot com, find location near you.
So I think, guys, we start with I mean, personally,
I think we start with Brian Kelly losing his job.
And I understand Brian Kelly has there's some things in
(03:22):
his career which everybody makes fun of, or if you
just don't like him. Right when he was first in
Notre Dame, you'd scream at mostly his quarterback and he
would turn purple in the face. Hard image to get
out of your head. Of course, you had the scissor
lip incident, which is an absolute tragedy at Notre Dame,
and social media likes to have fun at Brian Kelly's expense.
(03:45):
But Brian Kelly gets fired, and I just there just
isn't any way in which there's realistic expectations. That just isn't.
This is not the I mean again, you can listen
to it as the coach telling you this. But LSU
lost to really good teams. That league has really good teams,
(04:08):
and LSU's chose to do it through the portal, and
on paper, they should be better than other people because
of what they've done in the portal. But the problem
is that the portal does isn't always. It isn't always
the way to win. It's really hard to put a
team together to make them care, and so the win
over Clemson doesn't look as good as it should. The
(04:29):
win over Florida, Florida's fired their coach. The three losses
all the good teams in the sec ole Miss on
the road, Vanderbilt on the road, A and M at
home Stompson and they end up firing him. I think,
what's amazing about LSU football is this is much more
in line with LSU football historically. That's just the reality.
(04:52):
I mean, the guy who changed it was really Saban.
And then after Saban, Less Miles had a bunch of
you hadn secutive ten win seasons. But they're five and
three right now. Even if Brian Kelly was to lose
to Alabama, they were on track for another nine and
four year And I just I don't think that's terrible.
(05:12):
And it's like, look, dude, they've won ten, ten, nine,
probably nine now and that's the expectation. That's where they fall.
And the only times that they've had these spectacular years,
right I mean, you had the Joe Burrow year. That's
the most talented team maybe in the history of college
football if you look at what they had during edwar
(05:34):
Zarn's fifteen o season in twenty nineteen. Outside of that,
edwar Zuon won nine ten, and then of course he
had the COVID years and the ugly years at the
end where he won five and six. You know, Les
Miles had the one year where he went thirteen and one,
and he had a couple coming off of Nick Saban.
(05:54):
He had three consecutive eleven plus win seasons, but he
had eight, he had a five, he had an eight nine,
then finally they fired him in an eight win year.
This is actually and it's more competitive now that's ever been.
LSU is finding out that however, you want a word,
(06:16):
what they used to do and the extra benefits they
used to provide, it was generally seen as a cheaters school.
Now you're in the SEC where everyone can buy players.
It's I mean this Oklahoma, I said this when they
joined the SEC. A program that's used to ten and
eleven win seasons is going to have to get used
to four in five loss seasons. That's going to be
(06:37):
the norm, not the exception. It's really that difficult. Alabama,
same thing like Alabama's. They are winning games and I
was the guy who defended Kleen Borrer to start the
year when they lost to Florida State and they've won
every game since. But the fact is that Alabama is
a player two away from having three losses and stay
(06:58):
at number four right in the face. It's really what
it's like in this league. It's a super league and
you have to adjust otherwise. And the crazy part about
it is that Brian Kelly has gone from a guy
that seemed unlikable, seemed unrelatable, to boy enviable. I guarantee
(07:25):
if I ask Jay stew if I ask Dan Bayer,
if I ask Sam No matter how much we love
what we do, if I said you can't do that
anymore at the place in which you work or wherever,
you just can't do it anymore. But I'm going to
give you fifty four million dollars to not do it anymore,
you'd be like, okay, But we've reached this point of
(07:46):
ridiculousness in college football. It started this year when you
fired two coaches three games in the season, and now
you're firing just anybody who doesn't win an SEC championship,
and the expectations are as such. And the crazy part
about it is you can continue to fire coaches whenever
you want. You can't really fire players when you want.
(08:13):
But it's also fair to say that Brian Kelly to
LSU was a weird fit. And then you have people go, well,
he's not recruiting anymore, he's not recruiting the same level.
Yes they are, heart they recruit out of the portal,
they don't do the high school recruiting. And it's just
hard to build a team out of the portal. But
what I think got LSU, what got Brian Kelly is
(08:33):
the depth of that league is that the last two
years the league has been okay, and by SEC standards,
it's been a little bit down. And now with the
new ruling, they've gone just all in money wise, and
there is way more talent and way more parody. And
he's lost to three really good teams. It's hard for
people to adjust to the fact that Vanderbilt is good,
(08:54):
but Vanderbilt is actually legitimate and good. And that's because
Vanderbilt no longer has the academic limitations that used to have,
and now you know that it's not cheating for them
to buy players, whereas previously Vanderbilt was you had the
reputation of they didn't do anything extra. I think that's
(09:15):
what people are struggling to adjust to, the adjustment in
where Vanderbilt sits in the grand scheme of things, and
the fact that everybody's got players, and if you put
yourself ahead based upon the fact that you were buying
players previously, you're not anything special now unless you just
have more money than everybody else.
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Be sure to catch the live edition of the Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Eastern noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
App It's Dog Gottlieb Show. You listened to Fox Sports
Radio on the iHeartRadio app, Welcome in Buyer. I would
say this in regards to the Steelers' uniforms last night.
They were as bad as advertised. When it was up close.
They were okay when it was zoomed out because the
(10:04):
numbers were big and white and bright, and so it
kind of distracted from what are they actually doing here.
I just feel like it's such a missed opportunity for
the for the NFL to do what Major League Baseball
generally does a really good job. But they haven't always
because the Dodgers, I forget who they played this year,
and they once were some bizarre uniforms, the city uniforms
(10:26):
or whatever. But like, just how the Steelers wear black.
Just have the Packers where they're the Packers. I sed
out whites were awesome, but again, it's just the opportunity
to have the Packers in white, the Steelers in black,
the traditional uniforms with traditional quarterbacks and all the traditional storylines,
and I just think it was such a whiff that
I watched the game at three different locations, and every
(10:47):
location somebody was like, what is that team? Is that
the Steelers? What are they wearing?
Speaker 5 (10:54):
Well, literally like yes.
Speaker 2 (10:59):
Yeah, I was at an outdoor bar, pool side whatever.
And then I'm sitting there in the games on and
you know, everybody they turned it up and having beers
and drinking, and like three people like what are the
Steelers wearing? And then we went to dinner and while
we were waiting at dinner, we were at a bar,
(11:20):
and yeah, it was what up with that? And there
was like two other guys like what are the Steelers wearing?
Those are so ugly? And then I went to a
sushi bar in the second half and we had I
made sure like I'm only going to sushi bar. I
want to watch the second half, watch the entire second
half walleating sushi. And yeah, the same thing was that
even the sushi chef, who was Japanese obviously, and I
(11:44):
don't know if that's obvious, but and he spoke pretty
good English, but it was definitely not his native language.
He said, he looked at me, was like, is that
the Steelers? Like yeah, it's like those are really ugly.
It's amazing how and how roundly he disliked those jerseys
were yesterday. And then there's the game, and I kind
(12:09):
of think that the fourth quarter is a real, real tease,
or maybe it's what the Packers have in them. You know,
suddenly Tucker Craft has become the best pass catching tight
end in the NFL. They can run it, they can
throw it, and that thing was moving and the defense
is getting stops, and they had great energy, and it
(12:30):
felt like this young team just had more energy than
the Steelers, and the Steelers couldn't get to love and
he eventually picked him apart. But it's just such a
tease considering how would the kids say mid how average
they were up until that point to where the light
switch went on. I guess the question, Dan is which
are the real Packers Quarters one through three or quarter four?
Speaker 6 (12:51):
Quarter four? And I think that's the only one that
you can really concern about. This is also a week
one Green Bay or week week's one into green Bay.
In a season where we're not sure who was who
and who was rising to the crop, I think you
have to look at what team has played the best,
maybe not throughout the first eight weeks of the season.
(13:13):
But just to his reach to peak, and I think
that you'd have a tough argument of anybody in the
NFC that they've reached the peak of what green Bay
has played like. So I would take what green Bay
did in the fourth quarter, second half of that game
because that matches up with who we saw early on
the season.
Speaker 2 (13:35):
Sammy, you want to get in on the uniforms.
Speaker 5 (13:37):
Yeah, quickly.
Speaker 7 (13:37):
So when I saw those Steelers' uniforms, a couple things
came to mind. They looked like kind of those old
school crash test dummies that were in those PSAs or
those commercials. Yes, and then I had the crash test
dummy toys were a great thing. And then also the
patches were very reminiscent of like Harry Potter World. So
there's some crash test dummy, some Harry Potter it was.
Speaker 5 (13:56):
Yeah.
Speaker 7 (13:56):
And then the pants with the sandy colored pants. I
was like, I don't know about all this. And then
also to Dan's point, I just think the where it's
going off with Dan was saying, I think that the
Steelers defense is a real liability. After you watch the
Bengal game and now this game, I don't.
Speaker 2 (14:10):
Think there's any question that's a liability, none.
Speaker 7 (14:14):
Because like Rogers scoring the ball, doesn't see me the
problem it seems to be their defense.
Speaker 2 (14:19):
Yeah, well, I think it's both, though, I do think
it's both.
Speaker 6 (14:24):
Go ahead, Dan, Yeah, I think that there are times
where Rogers does show his age. And you saw it
last night with the pressure that Green Bay was able
to get on him. And while he can make a
lot of great throws and know where's where to go
with the football, it's just not the same Aaron Rodgers,
(14:44):
and so you need help in the other areas. And
it's not to say that Rogers is the problem, that's
not it. But man, when you see Jordan Love throwing
twenty straight completions and having no trouble, and then when
Green Bay or excuse me, when Pittsburgh's trying to mount
a comeback and Rogers's got to step up in the pocket,
he just ends up turtling a couple of times. Yeah,
(15:05):
it was not a great look.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Nope, the turtle is where he really looks old. You know,
he just looks like, ah, I'm just gonna swallow this football.
And then you know they had turnovers as well. They
just completely became discombobulated.
Speaker 4 (15:20):
It was.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
It was just interesting on how the Steelers seemed to
fizzle when the game got pressure filled.
Speaker 8 (15:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 6 (15:26):
What was also interesting is is this is the last
time we saw Rogers was him and Jill Flacco going
up and down the field. And I think that kind
of tells you of where like the Steelers ceiling is
is they can beat teams that they're better than, or
Rogers can do his thing against poor defenses. It's just
are they going to be able to beat teams that
(15:46):
are equal or better than they are? And I don't
think that there's a chance of that. And it's interesting
because Diana Rassini, in a piece on The Athletic Entering
this weekend, wrote, the Steelers are actually kind of wanting
Rodgers to come back next year, and I'm not sure
if Aaron's going to be down with it. But I
think that ultimately leads back to what you guys say
(16:07):
is even though I don't think they're Aaron Rodgers is
at the top of his game, the Steelers have a
whole bunch of other problems to deal with.
Speaker 2 (16:14):
Yes, they got to, but like their defensive line provides,
if you don't send Blitzer Blitzer's they provide no pressure
and we saw that against the Bengals. And you know,
my guys in Pittsburgh like, yeah, you know Cam haywhere
you know it's over the hill, Like, that's over the hill, guys.
Speaker 5 (16:34):
Yeah, yeah, I mean you just paid TJ.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Watt. Yeah.
Speaker 6 (16:37):
I think you're going to get the full maximum value
from that contract you acquired Jalen Ramsey. That's tough spot
with that division allows them to be competitive. They may
make the playoffs, but I don't think there's any chance
that they sniff a Super Bowl.
Speaker 2 (16:54):
I don't think so either. And I do think that
people in Pittsburgh know and that it's a it's a
probably light a match at the end of this year.
It's the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Let's
check in for our weekly visit with our own GM here.
Tom Telesco was a gentle manager of the Chargers for
eleven years, going back to San Diego all the way
through the move to Los Angeles. Of course, last year
(17:16):
he was the GM of the Las Vegas Raiders. He
joins us every week here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Let me start with the Jets, okay,
because if you go back to last week, their owner
comes out and says, hey, if we could just complete
a pass right clearly calling out Justin Fields. And then
Justin Fields is not particularly good in the first half,
(17:36):
and all seems lost, and then a funny thing happens.
Brice Hou Yeah, Brice Hall ends up having a spectacular
second half and Justin Fields has a good second half
and they win their first game of the season. Tommy,
how do you how do you view Justin Fields here
with his third team in three years, just four years
(17:59):
in the NFL?
Speaker 8 (18:00):
Well, look, I think he is what he is and
Jets for an office, knew what they're getting when they
signed them. He's a dynamic athlete, he has a strong arm,
and he's a really good leader in the locker room.
He's a good leader as a quarterback. He has those skills.
It's the pocket passing part of it, the processing in
the pocket that the decision making it hasn't been great,
(18:22):
and it's it's hard at this point in his career
to keep improving at that. Usually at this point either
have that or you don't. But what I like, I mean,
obviously you don't like those comments that come from the
owner last week. But it does give the opportunity for
the GM or the head coach, quite a GM in
this this case, to sit down with Justice Field and say, hey,
look I believe in you. I signed you no matter
(18:47):
what people think inside or outside the building. It's a
change that the kind of gets behind the player. I
show your belief in him, because, like I said, they
knew what they're getting when they signed them. So yeah, sorry,
they got Briuce Hall. Bries hauled the ball a lot more.
He's a big time running back. And you saw the
team kind of rally around the quarterback, and obviously it
helped that the Bengals defense just really struggled in the
(19:08):
second half, that they couldn't get any stops. But you know,
it does show you know this, this is the people business,
and as a GM or head coach, to get behind
your quarterback. Look, he's your starter. You sign him for
a reason. You know he's not perfect, but he can't
help you win some games, and I think this game
a chance to do that.
Speaker 2 (19:28):
It's Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, show
the Uh, what's the difference in the injury report with
the Ravens and say the Jets, right because Aaron Glenn
was playing, Koy didn't want to name a starter, and
he said, it's just because I don't want to. It
wasn't because of actual injury. Right. Even though Toad Taylor
(19:51):
was coming off the injured list for the Ravens, we
thought Lamar Jackson was going to start, and then he
was pulled at the last second from as a guy
who he's been in this league for thirty years, what's
all this mean?
Speaker 8 (20:03):
Yeah, with the Jets, their injury report with throughout Taylor
was accurate, and you don't have to name may start
or but you do have to be accurate with your
injury report in terms of what the injury is, what
his practice status was, and then at the end of
the week, what his gained status is. So this is
all about competitive equity and sports betting, probably more sports
betting than anything else. But there is a competitive equity
(20:25):
to it because there's an advantage gained if you don't
know who's playing. I mean, preparing for Lamar Jackson is
going to be a lot different than preparing for Cooper
Rusher or Tyler Huntley. So it's a big difference, but
brilliant reality. It's about sports betting. That's why the injury
reports started way back in probably the forties and fifties.
But it's so important right now because as you saw
with Lamar when his status changed, I mean the line
(20:50):
moved like six points or five and a half six points,
which is which is massive. So it's the responsibility of
the GM and or the head coach, not the head
train or not not your PR director to be very
accurate with those reports. And we all know the rules.
The league is very stringent on it, and it just
surprises me for for a front office that's been there
(21:12):
as long as they have that that they wouldn't know
the rule. So because it's our job to know the rule,
and like for me for eleven years, like I did
every single every single injury report Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and
the game status, I just felt like it's very important.
If there's any mistakes, it will come from me. But
in that process, you talk to the trainers, you talk
(21:33):
to the doctors, you talk to the head coach, you
watch practice, sometimes I even talk to the player. You
do the injury report and make sure it's accurate. So
I would expect in this case, like there's gonna be
some significant finds at the club, buy some finance at
the head coach and ord GM, just to show everybody that, hey,
this is important. It has to be taken seriously because
you know, especially the way that the sports betting is
(21:55):
right now.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
No question about it. Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. That's the voice of Tom Telesco, former gentleal
manager of the Chargers and the Raiders. He joins us
for a weekly visit here on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Scatabo was having yet another impactful game. Then he breaks
his ankle. Obviously, you know you're worried about the momentum
(22:17):
where the Giants is just such momentum carried by those
two young players. But player wise, how do you evaluate
what a guy like that's going to look like in
the future When he wasn't the most explosive, he was
just incredibly physical and you got to deal with the
fact that there's going to be a rehabilitation process when
that injury happens. How do you evaluate Cam Scattabo as
(22:39):
a GM.
Speaker 8 (22:41):
Well, you'll definitely want to see I don't know exactly
what the injury is yet and what damage was inside
his ankle. Most often he will come back at one
hundred percent if it was an ankle dislocation. I mean,
obviously he's gonna be out for the year, but he
should be going to be back at one hundred percent
next year. Yeah. He's obviously a powerful, strong, physical running back.
(23:03):
But he also has and I hate to use the
word deceptive, but he has some lateral quickness. He has
some bursts in the hole. Does he have the elite
long speed down the field. No, he doesn't quite have that,
but he's shown even in high school. If you used
to see his high school highlights out here in California,
they're amazing. But even in college and at the pro level,
he still has some foot quickness that make some people miss.
(23:25):
And then he has the body controlling the balance just
to spin and turn and get yards after contact. Yeah,
you're gonna look really hard to talk with your doctors
about exactly what happened. That that is an injury that
doesn't happen. It's not a common injury, but it does happen.
He should be back two hundred percent next year. That's
the hope. He brings so much choice and energy to
that offense. Now they're gonna have to pair him, you know,
(23:47):
with another back of a different style, and they have
it a little bit right now with Singletary and Tarrow
and Tracy, but he's gonna be a bell coup to
them moving forward.
Speaker 2 (23:56):
What's going on with Atlanta, Man.
Speaker 8 (23:59):
It's it's hard to understand. Their highs are high, their
lows are so low, and there's just no consistency level
with that. Now. Yesterday with Kirk Cousins, obviously the starter
was out, he didn't have a strong game, but it's
just been so inconsistent, the ups and downs. I mean,
they beat Buffalo by two scorers and then lose the
(24:22):
forty nine ers team that's just really dined up by
two scores. So it's just been up and down. Lots
of the Panthers by thirty. They beat the Vikings by
two or three scores. So there's a guy to the
consistency level there. They have a lot of tools on offense,
and I understand yesterday Drake London was out and Kirk
Cousins was a quarterback, but they're hard team to figure
(24:43):
out right now. Now. The positive is, you know, their
division other than Tampa is weak, so they still have
a really good chance to move up and hopefully get
a wild card because they have talent on offense. The
defense has a little bit inconsistent, but they've been a
probably the hardest team to figure out this season.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Okay, what about the green Bay Packers? Are they the
first half or the second half?
Speaker 5 (25:03):
Packers?
Speaker 8 (25:06):
Well, I'm always looking at the full game, and they're
a sixty minute team, and watching yesterday, I thought it
was just so impressive. You know, Pittsburgh is known to
bring a lot of pressure, a lot of blitzes, and
Love just just tore them up. I mean his poison
up pocket. He had answers, and that Lafleur had answers
(25:26):
for everything that the Steelers threw at him, and he
just tore up their blitzes. And they got a great
spark from the Emmanuel Wilson in the second half. They
can't run Tardy two hundred and twenty five pounds. You
have some quickness of some bursts, but really physical player.
But you know, you get to a sixty minute game
green Bay, that the defensive gets going, they can rush
(25:47):
the passer. Pittsburgh offensive line if you can get them
in a straight drop back game, which will happen if
you're down, and Pittsburgh was down in the second half.
If you make them pass protect as true pass protectors,
that's not their strength. And the strength of Green Bay's
defense is getting after the passers. So you saw that
show up last night. The once the Packers got the lead,
you didn't kind of see how the defense can can
(26:08):
kind of turn it over from there. But I was
really impressed with with with Love last night. I mean,
he just looks so poised, so effortless in the pocket,
wasn't panicked with the pressure, and playoff standingly well.
Speaker 2 (26:20):
Chiefs played a night against Commanders. They won four in
the last five games. What do they figure it out?
Speaker 8 (26:26):
You know, a lot of it's just that receiver. Obviously,
getting getting rice back is helpful. It seems like every
year Andy Reid's despagnolo. You know, the year may not
start off exactly as anticipated, and then they kind of
figure things out, they fix things on their run. And
this year's been no different. The Chiefs offense last couple
of weeks have looked like the old Chiefs offense, and
(26:49):
and but it sometimes it takes a little while to
get there. But they've they've kind of picked it up.
But the defense is the one. Their defense has been
the one that's really been the major part of their
team that the last couple of years. And the defense
is playing a lot better right now than they did.
They even in the opening game against the Chargers, you
don't see as many any many receivers running free in
(27:10):
the secondary. They've got power pass rushers up front and
Stagnola's outstanding with his schemes. So the fact that the
defense is playing better and then the offense is trying
to get some weapons back, I think that's been the
biggest stump.
Speaker 2 (27:23):
Yeah, it's gonna be interesting against the Commanders. Team is
kind of sort of falling apart. Tom Telesco is our
guest here on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's look ahead because this was a weird week, right,
six teams on a buy. That's that. That's a lot. Uh,
that's a lot. Baltimore is trying to save their season
against the Miami team that just went how do you
(27:45):
handle the Miami thing? Right? Because tool was good yesterday,
you know, it was really good, but it's been such
a mess previously. What are your thoughts on Miami and
how you handle that.
Speaker 8 (27:56):
With the Miami offense, early in the year, they were
doing some good things. They were converting out third Dallas
scoring in the red zone. We've seen to a play
at a high level. It just hasn't been this year,
but we've seen him play at a high level when
when they really get in rhythm, when you can anticipate
get the ball out. Not having Tyreek Hill is a
big deal right now. But the biggest issue for the
(28:17):
Dolphins has nothing to do with defense. Is all about
the defense. They just can't stop anybody and that's been
a problem all year, with a bit of a problem
last year, and that's gonna be a hard thing to
fix during the season because they just don't have the
talent on that side of the ball. So you're you're
you're totally relying on the offense to score enough points,
which they did yesterday. But look their offense with with
(28:38):
with McDaniel head coach, they're gonna figure out ways to
move the ball, but they just can't get stops on defense.
And I just don't see that changing right now.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
No, No, they can't, and it's bad. And he's an
offensive coach. And it just feels like they've lost the defense.
Speaker 8 (28:56):
They had Big Fangio there a couple of years ago,
and you know, Vick was the coordinator that defense. Or
whatever reason it didn't work out. It goes to Philadelphia,
and Philadelphia's back to where they'd been on defense. But
I'm not pitting the doll on the defensive coordinator. But
they've made a lot of changes on defense personnel wise.
They let some homegrown talent out the door, they brought
in some free agents, they made some trades, but they
(29:18):
just hasn't had the continuity on defense to play well.
Speaker 2 (29:22):
Stug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Real Quick.
Uh so the Bill, the Bills have the Chiefs coming
up next, and they finally played well, but Ed Oliver
tore his bicep. I think he's out for the out
for the year. What does that mean for the Bill's defense,
(29:43):
which had been struggling anyway.
Speaker 8 (29:46):
Yeah, he's a very good interior pass rusher. He's extremely
quick and explosive inside, so they're gonna miss him. Typically
with that injury, they could possibly get him back to
the playoffs, depending on a couple of things. I wouldn't
think I would think he would be out for the
regular season, but hopefully they can leave the door open
for the playoffs and hopefully get him back. But that's
(30:08):
been the Bill's achilles field, and they put a lot
of effort in the off season into upgrading the defensive
line just with depth, and just hasn't quite come together yet.
I thought they did a pretty good job yesterday against
against the Panthers. The parents have two extra running backs
with Hubbard and Rico Dadel and they kind of held
them in check. Now that helps, obviously when you get
(30:28):
the lead that they had. I mean, the teams isn't
going to run as much. So that could be the
answer for the Bills is you just try and get
the lead as quickly as possible, and that would just
basically shut down the opponent's running game because you're just
not gonna run the balls much and you can kind
of get into your just rush the passer mode. And
I know Joey Bosa had a good game yesterday, which
is always great to see. I love Joey as I
had him with the Chargers. But yeah, but the Ed
(30:50):
Oliver thing is it's gonna hurt him a little bit.
I mean, he's a little bit of an inconsistent player,
but his flashes are very high, and he can really
rush the passer and he can chase things down range
inside the tackle box. So but you know, this is
a really an offensive team. You're gonna have to keep
relying on that.
Speaker 2 (31:07):
You also watch a ton of of of on the
college scene quarterback wise, Gosh, I gotta tell you, like,
is Mendoza the guy? Is he the guy that would
go number one overall? Like when you're evaluating these quarterbacks,
of what you've seen, who's been the most impressive.
Speaker 8 (31:25):
I haven't gotten into the details of it yet. I
have seen Mendoza. I thought he flashed them things when
he was at Cali, looked like an interesting player there.
I didn't study him, but just by seeing my TV
and he goes to Indiana, he's kind of showed a
lot of those same traits. I don't know if there
is a guy yet. And usually at this point, as
you get towards Halloween, you know that the top one
(31:46):
or two guys kind of just jump out. And really
haven't seen that so far with this group. So we
shall see. I mean, it's hard when we're a team
that needs a quarterback sometimes you start inflating some of
these players values, and this could be the year that
it happens more so than ever. But he has some
traits as a pocket passer, he makes pretty quick decisions,
(32:07):
gets the ball out. He's athletic enough, you know, I
don't think he's gonna be a big time runner in
the league, but enough to get to Gray to where
he needs to go. But there just hasn't been that
one quarterback that just jumped up and really jumped out
kind of cam Ward at this point last year, you
could tell the skills that he had, he just jumped
off the screen, and there just hasn't been quite anybody
(32:28):
like that so far yet this year.
Speaker 2 (32:30):
How much of cam ward struggles give you give you
pause over what he looks like long term?
Speaker 8 (32:34):
You know, it doesn't give me a lot of pause.
I think coming into the season, you knew they were
gonna be ups and downs. He's a young rookie quarterback
who just doesn't have enough talent around him yet. Offensive
line is a strong enough, yet they don't nearly have
enough weapons at receiver. I like Taj Spears at running back,
but they just don't have a lot there yet. So
the infrastructure isn't good enough, and then now you take
(32:56):
out its head coach and coordinator and now they're all
on transition. So I'm not so much worried about it yet.
But there's just a lot of work there to do.
I mean, when you have that many regime changes and
that many GM and head coaching changes, philosophy's change, investments
and different players change, so they have to get consistent
and kind of can just start building this and it's
going to take some time. So yeah, I'm not worried yet,
(33:18):
you know, but it's just going to take some work.
Speaker 2 (33:21):
Tell me the best man. Love having you on the show.
Incredible insight from a guy who's spent his entire professional
life in the league. Appreciates being our guest on Fox

Speaker 5 (34:09):
All right, Doug, the game today is.
Speaker 4 (34:11):
A big deal, little deal, no deal?
Speaker 5 (34:14):
Big deal, little deal or no deal?
Speaker 8 (34:15):
That.
Speaker 6 (34:16):
Kevin Stefanski was asked multiple questions about Shador Sanders a
day after was inactive with a back injury. In fact,
one of the Q and a's.
Speaker 7 (34:25):
Quickly, why wouldn't you just to see if it does
anything to the offense, give him an opportunity to go
in there and play.
Speaker 3 (34:32):
Obviously, my focus is where we are right now, Amrykay,
that's not my focus.
Speaker 5 (34:37):
Is that a big deal, little dealer or no deal?
Speaker 2 (34:39):
Uh, it's a big deal because it's it's a it's
it's a nuisance. Right, You're trying to coach a team.
Guy isn't even healthy enough to be out there, and
she's asking questions about it. Yeah, it's it's a big
deal because it's going to push anybody else away. He'll
get a shot eventually. This year they're just not very good,
but you know, he's he's trying to be fair to
(35:01):
Dylan Gabriel, somebody that they obviously believed in above that
of Shador Sanders. So you're gonna it's a rookie quarterback.
You're gonna have good ones, You're gonna have bad ones.
It's trying to flush it all the way out. It's
a long season again, but it's a big deal because
the feeling around the league is is if he doesn't
work out there and he's on the market, this is
what you got to deal with when you're just trying
(35:22):
to coach football team and he's not good enough to
do that doesn't demand.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
That big deal, Little deal or no deal. That the
Bengals couldn't hold off the Jets getting their first win
of the season.
Speaker 2 (35:34):
Ah, that's a big deal. It's not just that they
couldn't hold off the Jets. They had a huge lead.
The Jets could not have been playing any worse, and
they were coming off a Thursday night win where you thought, okay,
maybe the Bengals turned the corner and they just choked
their motor. Big deal.
Speaker 6 (35:47):
Also, the Bengals would have been four and four half
game back of the Steelers with the win over Pittsburgh.
Sure if they would have gotten that win. All right,
big deal, little dealer, no deal that Dave Roberts let
your Shinobu Yamamoto throw a complete game in Game two's
win in Toronto of the World Series.
Speaker 2 (36:04):
I mean, I think it was a gigantic deal. But again,
who knows if that was even Dave Roberts call. But
whoever made the call? Big deal? I mean I remember
when he was going out there for the eighth inning.
I sent a text on that group text like this
is awesome, he's going out there for the eighth Then
he goes out there for then like, what what's going
on with Dave Roberts? But what was it?
Speaker 8 (36:21):
Jase?
Speaker 2 (36:22):
Do that?
Speaker 5 (36:22):
You?
Speaker 8 (36:22):
You?
Speaker 2 (36:23):
You texted all of us that the bullpen is does
their best when they're not involved or something like that, or.
Speaker 3 (36:27):
They're they're the bullpen.
Speaker 2 (36:30):
Yes, that's great, that's game time.
Speaker 5 (36:34):
I liked him in that spot. I really did.
Speaker 4 (36:39):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Speaker 2 (36:43):
Yes, Chinobu Yamamoto. It's a great name, great name, great name.
