(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio? Are you doing? How
you doing? How you doing? Merry Christmas to you, Happy
New Year to you. Everybody always waits in the happy
(00:41):
New Year thing? Why why we put up Christmas lights
down before Thanksgiving? Why can't I wish you a happy
new Year. We're in We're well into past the midpoint
of December. Yeah, I'll be the guy. I'll be the
first guy to say, hey, Happy New Year, Happy New Year.
You know a lot of things are different when we
with then we when were kids. And some of this
(01:04):
is going to be based upon how old you are.
I've often I remember starting this business, uh a national
radio in two thousand three, and all of my research
I did based upon years of knowledge and watching and
also the Internet. And I always used to think, like, man,
(01:25):
how hard would this job be if I couldn't use
the internet. I didn't have the internet, Like, how crazy
would that be if I was in the mid to
late nineties and I was trying to do a radio
show and I didn't have the Internet. But let me explain,
how are it used to be in my day? And
it wasn't that long ago. Like a lot of this
(01:47):
stuff is really the last five ten years. We didn't
have red Zone. In order to get your out of
market games, you're of market games, you had to buy
one of those colossal satellite dishes, not the little, little,
acute ones they have now, these biggins. Matter of fact,
(02:10):
I know the year when the little ones came in,
because it was after my first year in college. My
dad got one of the big satellite dishes look like
the look like at least part of the death Star
or something that was on the death Star. And a
year later they're like, yeah, you don't need that anymore.
You can get the small dish with direct TV. So
(02:31):
it's kind of amazing to me how far we've come.
But there's a look, there's a lot of paralysis by
over analysis. Tom Brady suddenly old Drew Brees looks a
little washed up. Aaron Rodgers shouldn't be a pro bowler. Man,
did you see those misplays and misthrows. I'm not saying
(02:55):
that any of this analysis isn't accurate, but it actually
might be too accurate. You're like, what, that's the dumbest
thing I've ever heard. Okay, you know, sometimes we're paralyzed
by instant replay because the idea of instant replay is
to get it right. But getting it exactly right sometimes
exacts a lot of the enjoyment out of it, takes
(03:17):
the pace out of it, just takes the feeling out
of it. How many of you have been to a
big time football game, a big time basketball game, and
all of a sudden there's a review at the most
important time in the game, And do you want to
get it right? Yeah? Do you want it to take
(03:38):
Timmins to get it right? No? That's kind of like
how we over analyze quarterback play. Tom Brady doesn't throw
the ball well one week, Let's do analysis of throw
by throw. Aaron Rodgers suddenly throwing the ball away instead
of into traffic. That's how he has twenty three touchdowns
only two interceptions, but far more throwaways, far more mrs.
(04:02):
I've even seen people point out look at some of
the mrs in Chicago. Now, I'm not saying that's not
good analysis. It is. It's possible we're over analyzing stuff.
Why was Vietnam such a disaster? Right Like we had
gone and fought wars on foreign soil before, we had
(04:23):
gotten bogged down in the occasional quagmire before, Why was
it seen as so bad? Why because, for the first time,
on a daily or weekly basis, footage was sent in
from the actual fight and American bodies were being carved off.
It didn't the ratio didn't matter. We could kill a
(04:45):
thousand of them and five of our troops would go
home draft drape excuse me, in the stars and stripes
of old glory. But seeing it tracking a war on
a daily basis made it unfathomable, tenable, something we just
could not accept as an American people. No matter how
(05:07):
much we won in terms of body count, we couldn't
win the land, nor were we really trying to win
the land, And we couldn't win the hearts and minds
because on a daily basis we saw this footage come
back and it was too much, too much for us
to possibly take the young men, young women, especially young
young boys that should be in college were instead coming home.
(05:35):
That's what's happening in the National Football League. That's what's happening. Frankly,
and Lebron James loses last night, and all of a sudden,
there's this look we we I used to wake up.
This is how I woke up as a kid. I
grew up in a town called Orange, California, in Orange County.
The actual city is City of Orange. Cool city. You've
(05:56):
been there round withst You've been a city of Orange.
Great little downtown. Um. Remember the movie That Thing You
Do is supposed to be Erie, Pennsylvania, right O, that's
actually downtown Orange. There's a university there which is expanded,
uh ten times over. It's called Chapman University. Great school,
good film school, uh and a good law school as well.
(06:17):
And really the growth of Chapman is like the growth
of most any college. It's like five times what it
was when I when I grew up. My dad is
in was in New Yorker, And so what we would
do was we would get the l A Times, the
Orange County Register and USA Today until the National Sports
Daily came out, because that was like the best website
(06:40):
before there was websites. It was a collection of the
nation's best writers. And they would and we got the
late edition because we're in California, and we would open
up the newspaper and we'd pass around the box scores
and occasionally we would throw on Sports Center and that's
how we would get our news. Because you couldn't watch
every NBA game because on weekends up until the Ram
and the Raiders left, you could only watch the Rams
(07:02):
and the Raiders when they were playing. There was Sunday
Night Football, but barely anybody watched it. There was no
Thursday night football. Monday night football was still big. The
point is you couldn't watch every game. You had to
go to a sports bar or buy a colossal uh
satellite dish, which it would take a couple of minutes
to move. And because you didn't see every game, you
(07:23):
don't remember Brett Farve, Joe Montana, Dan Marino picked the
quarterback misfiring and looking old. It doesn't mean that Brady
doesn't look old. It doesn't mean that Aaron Rodgers hasn't
been wildly disappointing in spite of the fact that many
people like myself consider him the greatest quarterback to ever
play the game. None of that analysis. I'm not saying
(07:46):
the analysis is wrong. I'm saying we're actually paying too
much attention to every individual throw. My own kid is
guilty of this, right, And if you've ever had us
son who is super competitive and wants to be great
at something, convincing them that, hey, man, if Steph Curry
(08:07):
is the greatest shooter in the history of the sport
and he makes half of his shots, how many thinks
you're gonna make right that? But when you get so
caught up in everyone shot, everyone throw. So when when
I I hear people freaking out about well, the Lakers
gotta make a move. They have to make a move.
(08:28):
They got beat by the Nets, and they got beat
by the Wizards. Yeah, they also housed the Charlotte Hornets.
They had a long winning streak. They climbed all the
way to I think second place at one point in
time in the West. You know they're doing so without
brandon Ingram, who's probably their second best maybe third best
player went healthy. Like there's a lot of really good
(08:52):
you almost have to cover it. Like we used to
cover baseball. Here's how we used to watch baseball. Every weekend,
the game of the week. There was melt Ballantine base
Uh no, it's melloh uh what was his name? Ramo's Melo,
mel Allen, mel Allen Baseball and Ballantine this week in baseball,
(09:14):
And they'd give you like thirty seconds on each team,
and you're like, Okay, I'm all caught up. I'm all
caught up. Um So look, I'm not saying that the
Lakers shouldn't go after shouldn't go after the brow that's
(09:36):
the story that they gotta make a move today. But
it's not like because they lost in Brooklyn, suddenly it's
a sinking ship, right like lebron was what went out
in New York went out with Carmelo Anthony was asked
about Carmelo Anthony said something nice about a friend, and
usually what he says he actually means the opposite in reality.
(09:57):
A right, he's never wanted any coach to get fired,
yet all these coaches have gotten fired. So if he
says he wants he'd loved to play with Carmelo Anthony,
that probably means he doesn't want to play with Carmelo Anthony,
Let's not go crazy. I just I feel like we're
we see too much. You know, we can even go
(10:20):
back and what because every episode of Seinfeld is on.
Although most episodes of sein Felt are really funny, but
some episodes of Friends. It's better in your memory than
it is in reality. When you watch every episode on
Netflix every night, you pay a hunter million dollars his
Friends episode Friends, you know, it's crazy. We used to
just get our news on a weekly basis. On the weekends,
(10:42):
we'd watched sports. We watch our local team, occasionally the
game of the week, and we took writers word for
it on how a team was playing, and sometimes we
had some stats to tell us how somebody was playing.
Now we see every throw and I feel like we
freak out, We over analyze, We paralyze ourselves, assuming that
(11:03):
every every game, every past has to have a narrative,
and part of it is our own fault as the media.
It's not just that we can see more, it's that
every game is evaluated more. Lakers play last night, first Take,
undisputed coverage, today, the jump coverage, today, Tom Brady plays
(11:24):
poorly On Sunday NFL Network, Fox Sports One ESPN, all
of them, our every radio show, every blog, every every
Twitter account, every Whereas you used to write an article
and only your you would write it, only focused upon
your home area, your home team. Now it's created the
(11:45):
ability for everyone to have a voice, which is good
and it's bad. And while there's a wealth of opinions
because everybody has now seen these games, sometimes we over
analyze these games and we think that we think that
a bad game means a guy's done, when sometimes a
bad game is just a bad game. So Aaron Rodgers
(12:07):
misses two open receivers, I have never seen him throw.
Did you watch his first five years in the league? Right,
like the idea, the idea of well, Aaron Rodgers has
been a huge part of the problem because he's missing guys.
I'm guessing he's misfired before. I haven't watched every step.
(12:28):
Is it getting progressively worse? Is there room for improvement?
Is it because of age? Is it because of injury?
Like look, Cam Newton has been an inaccurate thrower, but
he physically couldn't throw a football. That's why they shut
him down today. But but the bigger point is when
I was a kid, as much as I wanted to
(12:50):
follow it on a daily basis. It was kind of impossible.
You know, you had ESPN and you had your local
games in your national games on weekends. Now everything's on TV,
and everything's analyzed on TV and written about, not just
in the media, but print has become digital journalism. And
(13:10):
digital journalism combined with blogs and everyone having a radio
show and a podcast gives so many opinions that are
so timely and relevant they're almost too timely, too relevant,
too much? Am I making sense here? How about this one?
(13:32):
Tom Brady was crummy the other night against the Steelers.
Steelers have actually underachieved much of this year. They had
a really good matchup. He didn't play well. Gronk has aged,
but Gronk still good at football. Tom Brady still good
a football. Are they going to get better next year
in the following year? Probably not. Are they good enough
(13:55):
this year to still compete for and win a Super Bowl?
My guess is probably, How do I know that? One?
I have fifteen years of data too. They've beaten the
Texans this year, they have beaten the Kansas City Chiefs
this year, and as poorly as they played, their defense
was actually pretty good and they still could have beat
the Pittsburgh Steelers on the road on Sunday. Are the
(14:18):
Lakers going to add another player? Yes? Are they gonna
add one tomorrow? Probably not, just because there's a push
to make a move. The Lakers exacts are not idiots.
They've seen everyone else get pushed to making a move
before it was organically gonna happen, and usually doesn't work out.
The better for the team that gets rid of four
or five players for just one star player. All right,
(14:42):
there's a bunch to get to Stanks gonna join us.
Mark Slayer at three times Super Bowl champion. I'll ask him,
Patriots done, like, who's got I'm not I will I
refuse to call death. I'm not going to be the
priest that goes in and delivers the last rites on
the Patriots. Is Stink going to are we willing to
say the Chargers? Yes, the Chargers are actually the best
(15:03):
team in the a C. What do we do at
the Saints? Now they're gonna play at home, but their
offense seems to be flawed. We'll catch up will Stink.
We'll get some actual analysis, and I promise there will
be no paralysis that's up coming next, be sure to

or called one eight hundred Progressive. Doug Gotlip Show Fox
Sports Radio, He's one. He's won three super Bowls as
a player, covers the NFL for a living one for
(15:47):
his local Denver show, and of course nationally with us
here at Fox, he's known as Stink. Everyone in the
regular the civilions could know him as Mark Schlairath. He
joins us in the Doug got Lip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Um Mark I pointed out that we just
cover the NFL so differently now with all the NFL shows.
NFL I've used to be on obviously NFL Network having
(16:10):
you know, seven coverage, obviously radio shows. Everything we're doing
at Fox and Fox Sports one covering it. So sometimes
guys just have a bad game, but because it's Monday,
it's the NFL, we go out. Tom Brady is washed up?
Um is Tom Brady too old to win a Super Bowl. No,
(16:30):
I mean I think I think you've got to look
at a couple of things. Tom Brady is still playing
UM at an incredibly you know, high level. Now, is
he what he once was? I, you know, I would
say I haven't. I've seen a guy who's forty one
now that throws the ball consistently better than he threw
when he was you know, then it was eight. But
(16:53):
I also see a guy that understands UM. I also
see a guy that understands that I'm not well him
to take one of the teeth like I used to
be at UM and and sometimes that might mean that,
you know, I lived to find another does and that's
the way it's gonna be. But in crunch situations, in
pivvol games, in situations where it's an elimination game, UM,
(17:17):
I'll do it. I'll take one that way. So, you know,
I think Tom Brady is at a point in his
career very much like Peyton Manning was at the end
where he didn't mind taking a self sack, he didn't
mind falling on the ground and you know, and trying
to convert a third down in eighteen that does not
bother him I will tell you this about the New
England Patriots. You know, we all want to point to,
you know, Tom Brady and and say, oh, what's wrong
(17:37):
with Tom Brady? But you know, I don't think that
Gronk looks the same as he has in past years.
I think that that offensive line has been pretty meager
um to say the least. You know, they've been pretty average.
They've had injury issues as well. So I think there's
a lot of different, you know, things that go on
with the New England Patriots or Tom Brady. But it's
(17:58):
just easier to look at numbers, will look at inefficiency
or look at that last drive. When you know, I
think you, like me and like pretty much everybody else
in America, when they got that last drive, you're like, oh, Patriots,
you can go down and score and tie this game up.
And when that didn't happen, you know, we all look
at Tom Brady, like Tom Brady, he's done. I mean
I've heard this for the last four years, how done
(18:19):
he is, and all that keep seeing as him in
Super Bowls, I'm a little torn. And here's why you
bring up the super bolt. They didn't punt in the the
Super Bowl, right, obviously, if you're good enough to not punt,
you're pretty damn good. On the other hand, there was
the same situation, that same similar situation the Super Bowl
where they got the ball back. I think they were
down five at the time, and he got strip sacked
instead of hitting James White out in the flat. He
(18:41):
kind of made a made a misread. So, you know,
I just wonder if because he's been so good for
so long, we give him a little bit extra pass
when the age and and some of the reflexes and
some of the reactions, uh issues have been there. We
just we're just kind of in denial because none of
us want to call premature death. Yeah, I mean I
(19:01):
can see some of that, Doug, I would, I would
tell you this, you know, it's interesting. Um. You know,
we all talk about, you know, coaches and your ability
to you know, be a great coach and um and anymore.
I think it was Chuck Daly who said, you know, nowadays,
you've gotta you know, you've gotta get the permission for
the players to coach them, you know, and if they
(19:22):
don't give you the permission, man, you can't be hard
on him. You know. I've always looked at Great Papovitch
and we said, Great Papovitch is an incredible coach, and
he is. But a lot of that is because he
had guys Tim Tim Duncan game permission to coach him right,
manage and over the last couple of years. And that's
the way it's been in New England to where Tom
Brady had given Bill Belichick Teddy Briskis tell me all
(19:45):
the time, Yeah, Bill Belgian can be like I can
get a quarterback from Foxborough High to make that throw.
Tom Brady you know, you stink, you know, and they
had that permission over the last couple of years. I
think that the strain on that relationship. I think there's
been a lot of things that have gone on in
the last couple of years, you know, from the Alex
Guerrero stuff to the Malcolm Butler situation. UM. And I
(20:06):
think those things, you know, I think those things are
hard to overcome. Um as you kind of take away
that permission saying, you know, I'm not gonna be coached
like this anymore because I'm sick of it. And I
don't know if that's what's going on there, but I
think that's certainly part of what's going on there. That's
the voice of marcelaira three time Super Bowl champion, joining
us on the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(20:28):
Has got his own radio show in Denver, of course,
covers the NFL every Sunday for Fox. Let me ask
you about the two teams in the a f C West. No,
I'm not gonna ask you about Nathan Peterman signing today
with the Raiders, or about the Broncos and what they're
gonna do uh with with their head coaching position. I
want to ask you about Kansas City and the l
A Chargers. Um, they got the same record, they split
(20:49):
on each other's home field. Neither team was healthy, though
the Chargers appeared to be on the brink of getting healthier. Um.
But Kansas City is in the driver's seat to get
home field advenge throughout even if they have the same record.
Who do you think is more likely to make a
playoff run? Um? I think the Chargers are probably more likely.
(21:10):
I think, as you mentioned, they're getting healthier. Um. Philip Rivers. Obviously,
Philip Rivers has been great. Patrick Mahomes has just been
absolutely phenomenal. Here's what worries me about Kansas City. Can
you get off the field and crunched time defensively And
we've seen them, you know, give up fifty fifty four
(21:30):
um two uh, you know, fifty four to the Rams,
and then we saw them on that Thursday night game
where they had a commanding league not be able to
get off the field and give that lead back up
to Philip Rivers. That concerns me. The other thing that
concerns me, and I think a lot of people just
dismissed this, but Kareem Hunt. And I think because Spencer
(21:50):
Ware came in and played really well, people dismissed the
value of Kareem Hunt. Here's my issue with losing Kareem Hunt.
That dude is accountable for four or five kind of
explosive plays a game, and in the NFL an explosive
plays people people you know, define it differently. But for
the most part, most people would would say that it's
a twenty yard past completion and in a twelve yard run,
(22:13):
and that guy will give you four or five of
those a game. And I don't know that they have
anybody else in their fact gold that consistently gives you
that kind of production on the explosive especially in the
past plays, and so you're you're walking away from you know,
if you look at that, if it's four or five
of them, you're looking at you know, sixty two two
a hundred yards of offense and score and they've lost that.
(22:39):
And I think it. I think that is you know,
devastating to that offense in general, especially when you have
to make a play, when it's crunch time and you've
got to make a play and they find a way
to double team Tyreek Hill and they find a way
to double team Kelsey. Where are you getting that extra
explosive from? And that's the thing that scares me a
live about Kansas City. Um, the charge As are a
(23:00):
little bit like the Texans. Obviously Texans had been in
the postseason more, but no one wants to buy into
them in a big moment, right like are they going
to beat the Patriots? Are they going to beat somebody
legit in the playoffs? Do you believe that's changed? You know?
I do. I think there's I think one Anthony Lynn
for the Chargers has come and brought an attitude of toughness,
(23:22):
um and attitude of we're gonna run the ball. Uh,
They're real outside you know, kind of outside the tight end,
um kind of pin and pull football team. And they've
run the ball exceptionally well in those situations as they
get Gordon back and get him healthy again. So I
think they've changed their attitude a little bit, changed kind
(23:42):
of their makeup to some degree. Um So, I think
I think that part for me has changed. And then
we've just seen them, you know, we've seen them come
back in crunchtime situations in Philip rivers. You know, you know,
being an incredible quarterback, there's no question about it. But
I just think the makeup of this team has changed
a little bit. I've had an opportunity to sit down
(24:03):
with a bunch of guys on that team call one
of their games. I just there's a different vibe there
when it comes to the Chargers, and I think a
lot of that comes from um, from Anthony Lynn and
the job he's done coaching this football team. That's the
voice of Stink. Three times Super Bowl champion Mark Slareth
joining us on The Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(24:24):
We everyone wanted to buy into the Cowboys, especially after
they light up the Philadelphia Eagles late and get a win.
But Dak struggled the first three quarters. They don't score
a point in India, And look, I think Indie is
one of the great turnaround stories in all of football
this year. I don't think anybody would argue with that.
But what do you make of the Cowboys after five
great weeks and one terrible week? Well, I think I mean,
(24:48):
I think one, it's hard to play, you know, six
eighteen weeks on a drest wind like it's it's really
hard to do. And when you have a when you're
a team that has to agencies, um, you know, and
you can't overcome that with enthusiasm and adrenaline, you're gonna
have one of those games. Of course, you get shut
(25:09):
out and everybody's gonna make a bigger deal of it.
But think about you know, that's a team that's that's
been built on Hey, we've got a great offensive line
where control line of scrimmager, run the ball. You know
we're gonna do those things. Um, you know, Zack Martin
doesn't play all of a sudden, Travis Frederick, you know,
had the beginning that the illness at the beginning of
the year. He hasn't played all season long. Then they're
starting left guard who was a backup at the starting
(25:31):
left guard, who's really come and help solidify that In
Suaphilo gets poked in the eye and he's out. And
Smith has had injuries throughout the season. So that's you know,
that's the core of what you've built your team around,
and when that's injured, you're gonna have some struggles. Um.
Then you look at the fact that you know that
to me is more of a site type of thrower. Um,
(25:52):
what's that mean? What? What's that? What's that mean? Okay,
So a side side thrower means he's not anticipatory with
the ball, like he wants to see you open, so
he tends to hold the ball a little bit longer
than he should. He's not throwing it. He wants to
see you turn, look and see your eyes before he
lets go with the football. And when you do that,
you tend to hold the ball longer. You're not anticipator,
(26:14):
your site thrower. And one of the reasons they've given
up the second most sacks in football fifty one sacks.
So like those things, those things are hard to overcome. Um,
And I still think they're a really good football team.
I think they have to understand what they are. Run
the ball, run some of the zone reads this, you know,
(26:34):
the zone read running plays, run some of the RPO stuff,
and especially the red zone. They're a bad red zone team.
They need to let Doc actually hate it's late in
the season. That guy's got to become a runner down
there because that's when they operate the peak efficiency. And
so those are some of the things that have to
happen for Dallas. I still think they're a really good
football team. I think they've got a really good defense, um,
(26:54):
you know, and I still think they can control line
of scrimmage when healthy upfront, and I think they need
to lean on that as much as possible. March Larris
joins us if if you don't know his history, he
was part of two great offensive lines with the Hogs,
with the Redskins when they won a Super Bowl, and
then of course with the Denver Broncos when they won
a couple of Super Bowls with John Elway. Two very
(27:15):
different styles of of of blocking, two very different styles
of playing, yet two great offensive lines. The Rams offensive
line has been kind of the untold story of their
success is there are is there play? The reason their
offense is suddenly struggling. Yeah, well that it's part of it.
They haven't played as well. Um. I think there's a
couple of things. I think Todd Gurley um has been hurt,
(27:39):
so he's you know, I think he's been banged up,
so he's you know, a half a he's a half
a tick uh less decisive than he was at the
beginning of the season. I think another issue for them
is there a team that faces out of eleven personnel
three wide receivers um like ninety percent of the time.
The only time they haven't been in eleven is on
neil bound situation is when they've won the game. That's
(28:01):
pretty much it. Like it's it's an incredible statistic. That's
what they play personnel wise. A guy that has really
hurt them is Cooper Cup. And Cooper Cup when he
tore his A c L he was not only a
motion guy, a jet sweet guy for them. He ran
the dirty stuff underneath the you know, the the inside
breaking routes from the slot. He ran the crossing routes underneath.
(28:23):
So he did a lot of the dirty work. But
where he was really really like an effective player is
cutting off the backside in the in the in the
zone running game and being a front side you know,
front side blocker and that as well from the receiver position,
and they have lost that aspect of their offense, and
I think it's really hurt them. I think the other
guy that's hurt them Um also because you know, like
(28:46):
I said, Todd Gurley seems to be a little bit
like a half a tick slow because of the injuries.
Malcolm Brown was an incredibly effective backup for for Todd
Gurley and he got hurt Um did way through the season,
and it's really hurt their offense. One of the reasons
they went back out and signs C. G. Anderson off
(29:06):
the street Um to give him a little bit of
a boost there. But Malcolm Brown was greatful, Let's pick up.
He's just a physical presence when he replaced Todd Gurley
and they've missed that aspect too, So they're just a
little out of sink up front has been a big
part of it, but I think a lot of it
is just Todd Gurley not being healthy and the and
the loss of Cooper Cup has hurt them quite a
(29:27):
bit as well. Stake Mark Slayer at three times Super
Bowl champion incredible analysis stank Merry Christmas, Happy New Year.
I will, I know, I'll talk to you before them.
But I wanted to be the no one wishes happy
New Year until Christmas is over. Not here. We wish
you both, Okay, very important, right? You know what? And
when is it right to cut off the happy New Year?
You know, the happy New Year guy that wishes the
happy New Year in March? Like, at what point do
(29:48):
you say, hey, let's be let's be done with a
happy New year. So that's a great question, because I
don't know. I don't know what the answer to that is.
I think once all the bowl games are done, right,
when the when the national championship has decided, it's officially
been a happy new year. You know, nobody right, nobody
has to worry about writing their checks anymore. I used
to write my eighteen on my check. I got right nineteen.
So now it's after after the national championship is crowned.
(30:10):
I like that. I like, you know what, I'll go
with that theory. That's the big game. Anybody who's wishing
me a happy New Year after that, I'm gonna say, hey, dude,
let's move on and that's over. Thanks so much, stink.
Let's get your Steven Steger getting update and everything else
going on the world of sports. Steve what he got
good afternoon. We'll start with the NFL. Is quarterback Cam Newton,
with his shoulder injury, will be shut down for the
(30:31):
year by the Panthers. He had shoulder surgery nearly two
years ago. Carolina plays fetter and kicker Graham Gono on
injury reserve with a bad knee. Lions running back carry
On Johnson goes on I R with a knee injury.
Falcon's running back Devonte Freeman on I R. Dolphins running
back Frank Gore heads to injured reserve with a sprained foot.
Good news for the Chargers, as star wide receiver Key
(30:51):
and Allen, who miss practice yesterday and left their last
game with a hip injury, is practicing today. Brown's defensive
back Denzel Ward returned to practice. He'd is the last
two games due to a concussion. Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers
says he will play Sunday at the Jets after last
week's growing injury. The Giants say they are not considering
shutting down wide receiver Odell Beckham, even though he's missed
(31:11):
the last couple of games with a quad injury. The
Raiders are signing quarterback Nathan Peterman to their practice squad.
The a f c's Offensive Player of the Week is
Charger white out Mike Williams. Minnesota running back Dalvin Cook
took the NFC honors. There are two NFL games this Saturday,
including Saturday Night Ravens at Charger. Toughest ticket in town
(31:32):
Seed Stadium. So no, no, I'm not not like not kidding,
like it is a seriously tough ticket to get in. Now,
the Chargers in general are this specific last home game? Uh,
this last home game? Yes, the tickets have all been sold.
I mean people act like, you know, it's just no want.
Who wants to go to Carson for a game now?
And with the recent opponents being Arizona and Cincinnati, it
(31:54):
has been mostly Charger fans recently. Yes, now there will
be lots of new Charger fans and there will be
some Raven fans. Now. When the an a f C
West team like Kansas City visits, that's a different story.
Or the Philly fans last year that was phenomenal, that's
a different story. Yeah, there is one college football game tonight,
San Diego State versus Ohio. You in the dreaded Frisco
Bowl in Texas. Twelve NBA games tonight, including Phoenix with
(32:17):
a seven and twenty four record playing at Boston. Back
to you awesome, great stuff. That's Steve dis Seger will
be joining us momentarily. Drew Brees is still the favorite
to win the Super Bowl. Real news are fake news?

Fox Sports Radio. A lot of travel this weekend, I'm
sure with Christmas being on Tuesday, so I got a
good sports weekend, right, I mean you think about you
(32:59):
got football all weekend, bowl games, hoop games, and then
of course, uh, Christmas usually belongs to the NBA, and
then end of the week we get into next weekend
we get to the college wall playoffs, so it should
be phenomenal. Phenomenal stuff. Also national signing day today, early
National signing Day. Uh my. My basic breakdown of it
(33:21):
is this, I just look at it, dude. If you've
made it to sign a scholarship at a four year institution, congratulations.
Just feel good for the kids today. But it's just
the start at the end of the journey time. This
is game time on the Doug Gottlie Like when you
(33:42):
getting married, right, like everybody says like, oh, wedding day
is the greatest day of my life, Like it wasn't
a lot of other days, a lot better. Like the
first time your kid stands up and like wobbily and
I got you, daddy, Like that's the way it kicks
the wedding day in the ass. I'm just being honest
with you. Or just sometimes it's a Sunday at home
when you turn off all the devices, a little less
(34:05):
planning and stress for those days, play a little play,
a little focus with the kids. But he got well,
John Freak news by the way, one real news item. Alabama,
for what it's worth, has the number one ranked class
in this early signing period that started today, And the
question becomes this now they I think they have one
five star and all four star everybels like a four star. Um.
(34:26):
The big question with Alabama recruiting is always going to
be are they four and five stars that signed Alabama?
Or do they signed Alabama and become four stars because
it was Alabama who recruited them that? Yeah, yeah, that's
the legitimate question. Now, you know they've had guys that
He's always say, two quarterbacks at the same position. That
(34:48):
maybe uh to his brother who's right handed? Sign today too?
I was looking good for you mentioned the end of
the goodness already a week and a half week at
to the college football semifinal days. Yeah, looking forward to
that week from sati Okay, Uh Saint's quarterback Drew Brees
is expected to win the m v P according to
(35:10):
several gms in the NFL. According to nfl dot COM's
annual survey, is that real news or fake news? I'm
gonna say it's fake news. They're real and they're spectacular.
Now these are not voters, of course, I think it's
media that votes on the awards. But according to their
awards survey, twenty two front office people have Drew Brees
as their m v P. In fact, one guy, an
(35:32):
NFC general manager, texted and said, there's only one award.
I'm sure on this season it's m v P Breeze.
Let's say Comeback Player of the Years Andrew Luck. Oh yeah,
Night and Day. That's a good one. A Defensive Player
of the Year. Aaron Donald was listed. He got thirteen votes.
I think it was eight for Khalil Mack. There we
(35:52):
honestly like, look, I'm not I don't care about Pro
Bowl snubs. We're not going to do a segment on
Pro Bowl snubs. But Chris the the overlooking Chris Jones,
the kid with the Kancer Chiefs, who has like fourteen sacks,
is kind of comical, like we're just so trained to uh,
you know, those guys have had Cluemax had a great year.
Climack didn't play every game, didn't play every game, so
(36:14):
I kind of take things that takes him out of
the running. Aaron Donald's been great. Chris Jones statistically has
been just as good. Isn't it just like the Baseball
All Star Game in the summers, when people are in
an instant uproar and then you realize, oh, some people
are hurt, some people are not going to play. Eventually,
those guys right on the cusp are getting in. Of course,
the great quote from one of the guys who voted
again Front Office vote for Defensive Player of the Years,
(36:36):
Aaron Donald is basically unblockable. End quote. Hard to argue
with that. As far as their picks for Rookie of
the Year offense, Giants sa Kwon Barkley defense chargers, Derwin
James actually edged out Colts linebacker Darius Leonard, who has
been piling up the tackles since early season. I I
know this doesn't This is really hard for Annapolis Colts
(36:58):
fans and like always been piling up tackles. Derwin James
is the best at his position. Guy, he's I believe
he's an All Pro. He's it's he It's crazy how
good he's been. I think he leaves defensive backs and sacks.
He's also got more picks than than Darius Leonard. And no,
he doesn't have as many tackles, but that's because they
(37:19):
have other guys making tackles and he is a sure
hand at tackler and he's good in coverage as well.
Likes why Travis Kelsey struggle because he had Derwin James
on him. Like again, I'm not saying Darius Leonard's not
great now. Of course they'll be in the Pro Bowl
at some point. But I mean, you're just not paying
attention if you don't know that Derwin James has been about.
And then we'll see him Saturday night against the Ravens.
It is rare for a rookie dB to have three
(37:41):
picks and three sacks, and that's what he's done and counting.
I guess next time. And wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has
no clue if this week will be his final home
game in the NFL. It's final home game with the
Cardinals this week. And is that real news or fake news? Ah,
that's fake news. And they're spectacular, he say, so, Maybe
it may not be NFL careers and every Sunday. I'm
(38:02):
just blessed to be able to play the game I love.
But I have no clue whether I'm planning to retire
or return for another season. I just I can't see
him going out this way. I just can't like a
bad team Eate Nate would be bad for him. If
I recall previous quotes, this team maybe get the number
one overall pick with that record. I just I can't
see it. Maybe maybe, and and like, look, we've talked
(38:24):
about this before with Calvin Johnson, another super bright guy.
You know, Fitz will go into the media if he
wants to. Are you going to coaching? You're going to
whatever he wants? Um And so he has enough money
to walk away and he can continue to make money
at the six and seven finger level figure level where
most most don't. I just you know, unless his body
is starting to let him down or he's got fear
(38:46):
of CT, I can't see him leaving on this sort
of note. And he says, I've never had any desire
to play anywhere else. So it's Arizona or stop playing.
He loves golf. Help, Yeah, there's some of that in Arizona.
Packers inter him coach Joe Philbin doubled down on the
status of Aaron Rodgers for this weekend, saying, I've already
addressed this. Aaron will play the remainder of the season.
(39:06):
Is that real news or fake news? Yeah, he's the
only one who's not doubling down. Aaron Rodgers later said, yeah,
I'm a leader. I'm playing, you know. Meanwhile, noncommittal was
Joe Philbin with the visiting media on the conference called noncommittal.
I'm hopefully he's going to play with the local media.
So Roger is gonna be playing this weekend. Um, I
think he's gonna be playing. I just I don't think
(39:28):
he finishes the game. I think he plays. I don't
think he finishes the game. That's fair enough. And then
what starts the last game too? Same thing? Probably Finally,
I think he wants to play. I think he wants
to play better. I think he knows he hasn't played well.
I I wouldn't be surprised if he wants Joe Philbin
to get a real legit shot at the job, and
he knows Joe Philbin has no shot the job if
he doesn't play, and if the knee is good enough
(39:48):
to play, and the grand injury from last weekend, you
know he would want to One item final from the NFL.
Aaron Donald sent James Conner an inspirational text three years ago,
predicting that con Or would be a pro bowler in
the NFL after he had announced his cancer diagnosis. Is
that real news or fake news? Real news and they're spectacular?
(40:09):
In fact, mentioned by Connors after the Pro Bowl selection,
as he put it, one Pro Bowl down more to come.
The exact quote from Aaron Donald at the time was,
I already know you're gonna bounce back stronger than ever.
Can't wait to see it. This is game time on
The Duck Godli Show. Normally I don't get into those
(40:29):
sort of things. Uh, but it's not just because his
cancer is because he said Pro Bowl. Wasn't like he's like,
you're gonna make the league. He's like, you're gonna play
in the NFL. You're gonna play for ten years? Like
no, no no, you're gonna make the Pro Bowl like and
then he does the fact that he also texted him
saying Levy on Bell is gonna hold out. I think
he's gonna come back, not gonna come back. I thought
that was incredible foresight, that was really remarkable, and then
(40:50):
play for the Jets and be massively I'm kidding. I'm kidding.
One big reason I don't think Nick Saban's going to
the Packers. I'll tell you next. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show weekdays in
noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app What Up Doug gott Leap Show,
Fox sports radio. Do Do Do Do Do Do? Coming
(41:16):
to you from the beautiful city of Angels. Do Do
Do do? Um? Let me explain the way it works
or the how do you get that job type of
thing right now, It doesn't always work out that way,
(41:37):
but this is fascinating to me, right Okay, So I
look around and I see, I see the Colts and
their success with Frank Reich as her head coach. And
what people forget is that Frank Reich was not the first,
(41:57):
nor even the second choice of the Colts general manager.
And you're like, not the second choice? What do you
mean by you? Remember the story that Chris Ballard, of course,
had agreed to terms with Josh McDaniels on a deal.
Josh mcdane's, of course, then ultimately backed out of of
(42:18):
the deal. And so when he backed out of the deal,
now the sudden, Chris Ballard had to go back to work.
Chris Ballard took the job in two thousand and seventeen.
Here we are in two thousand eighteen. You're like, wait,
what Matt Nagy was actually the second choice, the second choice,
(42:39):
or maybe even the first choice. Because Matt Nagy had
worked with Chris Ballard their their sons are close friends
played on the same AU team. Because what you do
when you get a job is you find the people
that you worked with that you want to get along with.
That you guys understand how each the works, that you
(43:01):
admire their work ethic and you're like, look, I not
only have to hire somebody I believe in. I gotta
hire somebody I know and somebody who knows me. Yeah,
this is a quick aside, but this is why the
Rooney rule actually works. There's lots of people. Now, look,
is it always honestly applied by NFL teams? The answer
(43:23):
is no. But we we talked about the good old
boys system. You hire your boy, hire a guy that
she used to But that's honestly how business works. You
get to meet a guy and you're like, wow, mhm,
I had no idea. Now you started. That's how you
organically or even artificially start a relationship with an assistant coach.
(43:49):
And so the reason that the Rooney were absolutely works
is guys travel in circles and and they know everybody
in their football family. And the old way to reach
out of that football family is if you have to
artificially go and find a minority candidate. I'll give you
(44:09):
a guy who's going to get a job, maybe not
this year, maybe next year, and who has done a
very good job. Brian Flores is the defensive coordinator of
the Patriots. He's been brought in a couple of different
interviews and like, wow, he only they only had an
interview because he's black, Like okay, but he had black
Belichick family tree and what I've been told, incredibly impressive.
(44:30):
But you don't know how impressive he is until you
have that conversation. And you can't create a relationship until
you have that conversation. Otherwise, when you go to a place,
like you're going to your Christmas party. I remember this
when I was at the ESPN. We was the ESPN
the East had the massive, massive Christmas party um at
a big banquet hall. And I mean at the time,
(44:50):
I think there's like six seven thousand people worked there,
and now was like five thousand people worked there and
their spouses could come. It's a great night, bunch of
dance floors, a bunch of DJ's, free drinks, free food,
is really really nice. But you'd go and like in
the very back of one of the halls was all
the radio guys, because that's what you do, right. You
work in a big corporation, when you go to the
(45:11):
Christmas party, even the people you see every stinking day
at work, those people you hang out with. This is now.
I worked in a bunch of different things, So I
would pop into this group, to that group, to that group,
to that group, to that group. I knew a lot
of different people. It's kind of connective tissue between them.
In business and in sports, you hire guys you know
you want to work for guys. You know you want
(45:33):
to work for guys because there's there there's trust in
time spent together. That's how relationships are built. It doesn't
always have to happen that way. It isn't always successful
that way, but generally that's the way it works. And
when you have a great job and you're gonna leave
that great job for a different job, you better know
(45:54):
who you're working for. There's a story out there, UM
that I want to get into. Are you guys aware
of this story about the Green Bay hackers and whether
or not they could lure Nick Saban away from Alabama? UM.
(46:18):
Ryan Clark is a former defensive back and a really
good analyst. At ESPN. I remember when he was a
defensive back and he started to become an analyst while
still play. We're like, oh, he's gonna work here someday.
Of course, he played for Nick Saban at l s
U before going off into the NFL, and he offered up,
you know, you try to get Nick Saban to leave
Alabama become the coach. If you're Green Bay, you sell
(46:41):
the farm, You sell the farm. You send everybody at
Tuscaloose Alabama. You try and get Nick Saban to leave Alabama.
When you look at quarterback coach relationships Sean Payton, Drew Brees,
Bill Belichick, Tom Brady, there's mutual respect and and some
of this is coded messaging that we're seeing. You go
back up, what was the assistant coach we had on
last week the former packer who who was the linebacker
(47:01):
coach who got fired for his tweet? Uh yeah, Winston Moss,
Remember Winston Winston Moss said he you know, everybody's it's
gotta be the It doesn't matter if it's a offensive
guru or you know what kind of higher it is.
It's gotta be somebody that everybody respects, that holds accountability,
we're hearing enough. It's got to be somebody strong, which
(47:21):
tells you that Aaron Rodgers runs the show there, right.
They gotta have somebody who can stay, who not only
will stand up two Aaron Rodgers, but who Aaron Rodgers
has to automatically respect. And the only way to do that,
the only way to do that is to go and
get somebody like Nick Saban commands respect because of the
(47:43):
program that he built. But Nick Saban knows he could
have succeed in his mind, could have succeeded in Miami
if he had a quarterback, And Aaron Rodgers probably knows
that I can only succeed if we have a guy
who's got great organizational skills and who needs it, wants
it has to be good. I have no connections personal
(48:06):
people in Green Bay, but I have no immediate sources
on this. I believe also Ryan Clark does not either
outside of just a ton of football knowledge and knowledge
of Saban in general. But my sense from business, especially
the business of the NFL, is this will never happen.
(48:28):
Not that Saban won't go to the NFL, I don't
know if he will, but he's not going to the
Green Bay packers. And it's not because a lot of
things about green Bay don't make sense. They do. Green
Bay is kind of like a college market, right, and
you can control a lot of things in green Bay,
messaging in green Bay, where the players live, the things. Coaches,
(48:50):
especially college coaches are in fact control fricks. Our control fricks.
And so they want to know where everybody is. They
want to drive the same way to and from work.
They play the same golf course a hundred times over.
They got a small circle of friends. They want everything
to be easy. In green Bay is just that sort
of market. You got to know if you need a
big city to succeed or you need a small town
(49:10):
to succeed. And I'm guessing Nick Shaban's like, you know,
I kind of like this tusclusive thing. You know, there's
a couple hundred thousand people here. Everybody knows me. I
know everybody. It doesn't bother me that I'm kind of
like a I'm kind of like a circus animal or
kind of like a cage zoo animal where people pointing.
I've learned to kind of deal with it. That's what
it be like in green Bay. I don't need to
fit in, like if it's in l a or in
New York, so that part makes sense. Having Aaron Rodgers
(49:35):
makes sense. The defense is appears to be getting better,
the personnel appears to have gone through a process of
getting better, getting younger, although they still have a lot
of fixing to do. And the running back that they
found now out for the year. But you gotta running back.
You're fixing, but it will never happen. And the reason
(49:55):
is Nick Shaban is not working for anybody. Sure as
hell an't working for Ryan who's only been a general
manager for a year. Like, that's not happening. That's not
the way it works. This is the he wants to
not just cook the groceries, but picked the grow He
wants the shop and then make the meal. That doesn't
(50:17):
work that way. And it doesn't even mean he has
to be the general manager. It can. It can be
a lot like what Buffalo has a right, Sean McDermott
gets the job and then they hire Brandon Bean, who
work with John McDermott in Carolina before he came to Buffalo.
(50:38):
That's just the way it works. When you have power,
you use it. When you have leverage, you use it.
And Nick Saban has f you power, but you want
me to leave Alabama and work for a guy who
grew up in Wisconsin, never been out of Wisconsin, been
general manager for your like. That is not going to
(51:01):
work now if it was a Belichick guy and they're
super close and a Belichick guy gets the job and says, hey,
we got a quarterback. We're gonna turn over personnel power
to you. This is how we're gonna do it. Like okay, maybe,
but that's not how Green Bay is wired. Between Ted Thompson,
(51:23):
who's the president now got kicked upstairs, and Brian Good
because those guys are Packer guys forever. They're not bringing
in somebody outside of the Packer family who has who
who wants power and control. That ain't happening. Doesn't mean
they couldn't go and get a Belichick guy, But that's
if they get a Josh McDaniels. That's because Josh McDaniels
doesn't have a lot of options to become head coach
(51:44):
because he backed out of an option last year. So
it's one of those And we've talked about this a lot.
It's like the flat tax, you know, on paper, great idea,
in practice, not going to work. Just tax cuts in general.
Oh yeah, cut everybody's taxes. Hey, we need some more
(52:06):
revenue for the schools and the bridges and all this
other stuff. You know, police officers like to be paid.
You know what we'll do. We don't do what do
make marijuana llegal, gambling legal that way, that way less arrests. Well,
you do know that there's a percentage of people who
will still perform illegal activities, right and oh yeah, by
(52:30):
the way, now you take people out of jail, put
them on the street, and they got to get a job,
and they may have to have illegal activities that you know, like,
well you were selling weed before. Now all of a sudden,
you're gonna go legit when you got out of jail,
even if your criminal records, Like, there's a lot of
other things that go to it. There's a lot of
good ideas on paper that in practice either have to
(52:51):
be amended or flat out don't work. I've told people
all along, like socialism in enroll, great idea, capitalism, great idea,
all those great like you do know that we don't
have a complete and total free market. It doesn't human
nature makes pure capitalism. And I have a bad thing
(53:16):
because then you're all out for your own And as
much as we'd like to think people will help other people,
and a lot of us are good people that want
to help somebody, Not everybody is just like socialism, the
idea we'll just work hard and we all get paid
the same and we'll just enjoy all the benefits of
all of our hard work. Like, yeah, that's not how
it works. I want to work. I work hard. I
have a little bit more skilled than somebody else. I
want to get a little bit more than somebody else.
(53:37):
I don't think that's unreasonable. In theory, strong minded head
coach that needs just one championship to cement his legacy
as the greatest modern day football coach, and he could
do it with a quarterback who needs another championship to
cement his legacy. Is arguably the greatest quarterback ever on paid.
(54:00):
Ryan Clark's hypotheses work, but when we put into practice.
In theory, he's gonna work for Brian Gudenkunst. He can't
even nor can I pronounced Brian Gudencunst and Ted Thompson,
two guys been with Packers for over a decade. No chance.
Joel Clatt joins the show of coming next, I'll ask
(54:21):
him if he thinks Nick Saban ever leaves. Plus, we
are going to argue about Joel's idea of completely realigning
college football and open transfer policies. That's up coming next.

selling or trading your car. You need to make good choices.

In with True Car, You've got a star on your roster.
So when you're ready to sell or trade in your car,
check out truecr True Cash offer not available in all areas.
You know, it's funny. I like when people listen to
the show and I don't always say I try not
always say the same thing. Shannon Cart listened to the show,
not using the story at Gottlieb Show, but back to
(56:09):
the Rabbi in the room. Yes, you gotta have a nick.
Saban's not going somewhere unless there's somebody that's been with
him through the wars, that's running things in one of
these organizations. If in fact he would ever leave Alabama,
just he just wouldn't. I don't. I just don't believe it.
I'll give you an example of a guy who would,
but he's not in power, right Adam Gaze. You know
(56:30):
Adam Gaze. You know the history of Adam Gaze. Adam
Gates is the head coach of the Dolphins. I know
the head coach wouldn't hire another head coach to take
his job, but Adam Gaze when Nick's there's a famous
story when Nick Saban was at Michigan State and he
took the l s U job. There was a plane
waiting on the tarmac and the private airport East Lansing,
and he told the other assistant coaches, Hey, whoever's coming
(56:53):
with me, I'll see you on the plane. And none
of them came with him. They all stayed with Bobby Williams,
who eventually got fired and Nick Saban had to almost
have a new staff. One of the few guys who
actually end up coming with him was Adam Gaze, who
went and was a grad uh grad assistant at l
s U. After on his staff as a grad assistant
at Michigan State. He was like one of like two
(57:14):
or three guys, but none of the actual assistants went
like Adam Gaze is a guy who if he was
in power at a well, you know, general manager, president, whatever.
That's the type of guy who, okay, guy, I can
see it happening. Let's welcome in the lead college football
analyst for Fox Sports. He's Joel Clad. He joins us
on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Can you see Nick Saban
(57:36):
leaving college football for the pros? Not at this point?
You know. I think that he kind of did that
and was there and it didn't go the way that
he thought it was gonna go. They didn't get Drew
Brees to remember, they settled on let you do his
DUMPI Caul Pepper and when in hindsight would be kind
of one of the worst moves in NFL history and
the restless history. I think he's so intrenched and you
(57:58):
talked about powered ynamics a little bit and who's in charge.
We'll rest assured there's not a more powerful person, maybe
in the sport, but certainly at the University of Alabama
than Nick Saban. And Texas a few years ago was
gonna offer him ten million dollars. He was very close
to leaving, and I think at that point when he
decided to stay, I think he decided at that point
(58:21):
Doug that he was going to finish his career at Alabama.
I don't think he wants to go and and go
back to the NFL and try it again. Um. I
think he's got something that is is really rare and
great and candidly, I think it's the greatest thing we've
ever seen in college football, this run that he's on
at Alabama. So I don't see why he would leave there.
(58:41):
I want to I want to ask you about Kyler
Murray before we get into some of this other stuff
about the college ball playoff. The You and I've been
tweeting back and forth at each other about, Um, Look,
Kyler Murray wins the Heisman Trophy. Was at the right
pick for him to win the Heisman Trophy? I think so.
I think that he was historically great from from a
college football perspective, not just from a programs per spective.
He was doing something. You know, the three passing, sixty
(59:04):
rushing per game. We've never seen anything like it. And
and I get it. People. You know dog on the
Big twelve for defense, but both seasons generally tells you
that the Big twelves defense is a little better than
what the national perception is. That the offense is a
little better than what everyone thinks they are. Just ask
Georgia last year in the Rose Bowl. Even though Georgia one,
I think they left that field send themselves. Oh my goodness.
(59:24):
That offense is is as good as we have faced.
So you know, Kyler is part of that. I think
that Kyler Murray is a player like I have never
seen before Doug and candidly, I don't think I've ever
seen a guy be that polished of a passer and
that dynamic of a runner all at the same time. Yeah,
it's interesting because because even he played first dad in
(59:46):
high school, he didn't see that polished at A and
m Obviously the time as a red shirt and behind
Baker Mayfield has been really good, which brings me to
this question. I talked to a at NFL GM and
he was like, look, he's he's Doug Flutie with Mike
Fix athleticism. That's that's how I look at him. But
he's tiny, right, he's five nine. Um, I think somebody
take him in the first round because look at all
these other quarterbacks that have come in and been successful
(01:00:10):
in all shapes and sizes, and we're getting closer to
where some of those college offenses do in fact work.
He has the contract of baseball sitting out there. But no,
there's no better guy to have on than you because
you've played minor league baseball and you've played college football.
I said this. Everyone has this assumption that you you
automatically make more money playing baseball. He get the money
(01:00:32):
up front, but you don't make real money in baseball
until you're in the bigs for four years, and he
would go to the miners as opposed to if he's
a first round pick in the NFL. He gets guaranteed
money for his first four years, which is two to
three to four times what he would make even with
the signing bonus his first three or four years playing
playing baseball. Is it a harder decision and more money
(01:00:53):
in it for football than people would think? Well, I
think that the short term decision is football, and you're
exactly right. The financial game and the short term is
better from a football perspective, because I do think that
he would sneak into the first round. I think his
talent suggests that he would. And Doug the nature of
the NFL, now, I think you hit the nail on
the head. We're seeing so many of these college style offenses.
I think the Rams utilize one Philadelphia obviously. I think
(01:01:16):
the Chiefs we're seeing shorter quarterbacks have a lot of success.
I think Baker's success in the NFL this year obviously
votes really well from that particular system in Oklahoma and
then transitioning to the National Football League. So I do
think that there's a there's a good chance that you're
gonna see a short term windfall of money in the
NFL that you wouldn't see in Major League Baseball. But
(01:01:38):
I do think, oh, sun spots, the sun spots get him.
Sun spots got him. That's exactly what happened, Just a big,
big sunse sun spots. Now, I do think what what
happened is, look, he's going to go into the long term,
long term in baseball. But not everybody makes it long term,
(01:02:01):
not even makes it short term, makes it to the bigs.
Lots of guys that That was kind of my point
with Joel was as good a baseball talent as he was,
he went back to playing football because he didn't make
it in baseball. I just don't know if it's a
if you if you know anything about Kyler Murray, like,
he only had one really good baseball season, one really
good baseball season, and you know, he's a diminutive second baseman.
(01:02:23):
It's not like he's a left handed pitcher who comes
in throwing ninety with with late action. So I think
that's uh that, that's that. It's going to be interesting,
and I want to get into the college foball playoffs
stuff with him. Let me bring in Steve to Saga
and find out what else is going on in the
world of sports is we'll get you a quick update
(01:02:45):
on things before we get Joel back. But he got Steve. Well,
let's start with one baseball item, because yeah, who's reporting it.
After more than two years of negotiating, Major League Baseball
and the Cuban Baseball Federation have struck a deal that
would allow Cuban players to join major league organizations with
out defecting. However, the agreement could be so scuttled if
the Trump administration officials rolled back the Obama era provisions
(01:03:07):
that paved the way for this. They never do that.
They don't haven't done that in anything else. Oh wait,
they tried to end the whole trafficking of players like
ya getting smuggled and being sequestered in some Mexican place
with the other guys from the Coyotes, and the money
payments and all of that. We'll see if there's a change,
But there is your baseball item. As for college football,
(01:03:28):
Alabama has the number one ranked class as the early
signing period began today. Recruiting classes in the top five
also include Texas A and M and Georgia Alabama QB
two A Tonga by Lois As his injured ankle is
doing great. He says he'll probably be a hundred percent
for the college football playoffs semifinal. Arizona QB Khalil Tate
will return to the Wildcats. There's a college football game tonight,
the Frisco Bowl in Texas, with San Diego State against Ohio.
(01:03:51):
You the Aztecs have lost for their last five games
for fisc Fisco Bowl. You know Frisco kid was a
friend of mine. We won't won't w that's the city
of Frisco, Texas was unaware. One bowl game tomorrow. I
By the way, South Florida plays in Tampa against Marshall.
So if you're looking for top twenty five teams at
least according to the CFP rankings. There are no ranked
(01:04:14):
teams playing in bowl games until after Christmas, and that's
still a week away, so get used to it. Quarterback
Cam Newton, with his shoulder injury, will be shut down
for the year by the Panthers. Carolina has lost sixth straight.
Pittsburgh Steelers start running back James Conner with his bad ankle,
says he's still not ready to return to game action.
Arizona claimed x Rams return man Pharaoh Cooper. The Raiders
are signing quarterback Nathan Peterman to their practice squad going
(01:04:37):
on injury reserve running back at Allion's carry On Johnson,
running back of the Falcons DeVante Freeman, and running back
of the Dolphins Frank Gore and one NBA note heatguard
Gore and Drag had knee surgery today. He will be
out another two months. He had already missed twelve of
their last fourteen games. Back to you, awesome stuff. Let's
sub get rejoined by Joe Class. All right, so you're saying,
in the short term, football is windfall. And then there
(01:04:59):
was a butt, and I was into the butt, and
then all of a sudden we get a sun spot
and we lost you exactly. So I think long term,
the guaranteed money and the overall money that you can
make in baseball, if you get to that four year
mark in the major leagues, you know, that's obviously where
you're gonna make more money. I mean, you look at
the career earnings for some of these guys that are
(01:05:19):
signing new contracts right now, and that's gonna be in
well of excess of two hundred million dollars. And I
just have a hard time believing that that's gonna be
done in the In the NFL, you've got to be
a top one two player at that position. Maybe he
can do that. I'm not sure, but I think long
range and and overall total of money is probably better
(01:05:39):
in baseball. But in the short term, I think you're right.
I think that if you're going to be in the
first round, I think you would have to take a
hard look at that because it's gonna be well in
excess at the four point six six million dollars at
the eight we're gonna give him to play baseball. Yeah,
And but now now the quarterbacks, I mean, like bad
quarterbacks make a ton of money. I mean, so well,
I I think it's I just think it's different because
(01:06:00):
of the position positionally dependent. If he was going to
be alignment or a wide receiver, that's one thing. If
you're gonna be a quarterback, especially as quarterbacks get to
play right away and get paid right away, and if
you can be a starter, you're gonna make twenty plus
billion dollars per year. Whereas in baseball, boy, they there's
a there's a lot there's a world of competition out
there as opposed to just national competition, and it feels
(01:06:21):
like it's a lot more hit and miss to actually
get there. Once you get there, there's a bunch bigger,
longer payday, no doubt. I mean, just think about that.
There's a guy Nolan Arronado, He's gonna sign for a
well and access to Turner fifty million dollars. Matt Ryan
is getting what ad a little over a hundred guaranteed.
You're talking about a guy making double, you know, and
Nolan Arronado is probably you know, a top ten player
(01:06:45):
in the league. And I think you would consider Matt
Ryan a top ten player in the league, top ten
quarterback in the league. And once making double, you know,
I mean, or more than double. So that's the long
term that we're talking about. But I think, listen, if
he loves football, he's gonna have a chance to be
a first round pick, and you can go out there
and you can make you know, I think probably shoot
(01:07:06):
man where where he's going to get selected. Probably nineteen
million dollars guaranteed over four years. It's pretty darn good.
All right, let's get to the college football playoff. You
want to expand to eight? Correct? No, no, no no, vehemently
against against eight. How do you want? I like it
at where it's at. I like it at four. I
think the structure needs to be fixed of how we
(01:07:26):
get to those four um and and I think that
eight would water down the regular season. I think that
that is is absolute fact. There are guys out there
that argue that it would never water down the regular season,
and I think that they're crazy. I think that last
year's Iron Bowl would have meant more, uh, this year's
um you know, last year's Iron Bowl essentially meant nothing
(01:07:48):
because Alabama still went and won the national championship. This
year's Ohio State Michigan game would have meant absolutely nothing
outside of seating. So don't tell me that seating is
gonna all of a sudden make those games matter more
in the regular season versus your inner, your out. I
think if we got rid of divisions, put the top
two teams in each conference against each each other in
(01:08:09):
the conference championship game, you would have what would be
considered at the facto quarter final game, except that you
would have five of them, not for you're still able
to throw a champ out. In particular, if one of
those camps is not as good as a group of
five team let's say our notre game if they won
eleven games, and so to me, you would increase access
for everybody in college football, just make the regular season
(01:08:31):
even more important. Look at the big twelve of this
year down the stretch, or more teams buying for those
two spots in the conference championship game, and then you
would have to say you've got to win your conference
in order to go compete for the college football national championship.
That's how I would fix it. I think that that
would be a better system. Okay, so I guess I
guess the issue with it is like taking away divisions,
(01:08:53):
you're gonna say, well, we picked the top two teams,
but you're still gonna It's still gonna be a judgment call, right,
I mean, yeah, but okay, but are right, but but
will be years. But there will be years in which
I mean, this is kind of what's happened in the
Big Ten right where there are years in which Wisconsin
or Iowa one year, you know, you don't play Michigan
(01:09:15):
and Michigan State and Penn State. Not having divisions balanced
out the schedule, you wouldn't have the weak side of
the conference that someone is able to skate through. If
you had no divisions, you would play much more of
a round robin stylast schedule or where you wouldn't get
to avoid teams over long stretches amount of time, like
for instance, Alabama is gonna play Texas more in the
(01:09:37):
next ten years because they've got a home and home
with Texas, then they are Florida. That's that's ridiculous, right,
So dision rotating phase, maintain one game that's a constant
every year, so you can maintain your rivalry. He can't.
But he can't do that. The reality of because they
have long standing rivalries, that that that the tradition is
(01:09:57):
what the sport is built upon. We would agree in
that correct right, So I just okay, you have one rivalry,
but that's not that's not how it works with like Georgia.
Georgia does have one rival Aubred and Georgia is the
longest running rivalry in the South. I mean, so george
is not gonna play Florida every year. I gonna make
any sense. Why can't Georgia and Florida be the constant
or you can do then they don't play off the
(01:10:18):
constant games, so you still have that still divisions. I
just think that you can get more creative than having
two divisions when divisions have clearly shown themselves to be
anequated and imbalanced. Uh as far as scheduling goes, and
as far as trying to crown a champion in the
conference championship game, yeah, I mean, like, look, I don't
like when you don't have the true two best teams,
(01:10:39):
but you're just sometimes going to have that. I would
I would offer only this that I think the regular
season would matter more if they had six. And here's why.
Even though it doesn't mean that all the conferences deserve it,
I do think that, like, look, if you say, hey,
whoever wins your conference gets to play for a championship
that would make those conference games mean even more than
they do now. Right, So you get six the first
(01:11:01):
five of the Power five, everybody gets one in, and
then you fight over the one at large, which is
kind of what they fight over now anyway. Okay, I
mean You're SEC championship game this year means zero in
that scenario. Why does it mean zero because Georgia is
going regardless? Uh no, another not no, Notreda would no, No,
(01:11:23):
they wouldn't. Notre Dame would go. They would be the
six team. Maybe maybe you're still you're still leaving it
up to a subjective deal with an at large. I
think at large is are are a bad idea personally,
but I think those are just semantics. I really think
that we're gonna go to eight. I don't like it,
but we're gonna go to eight. Um and and the
reason is is because you've got Jim Delaney that's starting
(01:11:45):
to get on that that bus with Bob Bowlsby, and
they're eventually going to have the power to vote free
against two in that that room when you've got five,
you know, conference commissioners that are essentially the guys when
it comes to college football. So listen. All of us
can argue about what structure would be best until the
(01:12:06):
cows come home. Here's the bottom line for me, It's coming,
and I think it's coming sooner than we expect. And
that's because Jim Delaney is finally on board. I think,
you know, I think it's the last three years he
finally he didn't get a champion into the playoff from
the Big Ten, and I think that's kind of the
straw that broke the camel's back. He's he is that
(01:12:28):
powerful guy. Last thing, you believe that players should be
allowed to transfer and play right away if a coach leaves. Yes. Now,
obviously on on a tweet, you can't give every caveat.
I think that there are caveats to that. Um. I
think that you should not be able to open transfer
if you're an upper classman, a junior, or a senior.
(01:12:50):
I think it's only if your coach openly leaves. And
one of the unintended consequences that this would have would
be a force athletic directors to do contracts that are proper,
that are proper dug that would properly penalize a guy
if he just upped and left his program. Right now,
we have buyouts that are far too small, and and
(01:13:10):
these coaches contracts are so one sided towards the coach
that everybody in the sport just says, man, I just
got to become a head coach and it doesn't matter where.
So now guys would be more selective about where they're
going to take their head coaching opportunity. I think it
should be more penal for those guys if they're gonna
up and leave and go to a different job. And
if I was an underclassman and I was recruited by
(01:13:31):
and committed to that coach, I feel like I should
be able to leave if he up and leaves me
he lied to me, I feel like I should be
let out of my agreement. The problem with with the
tightness of the transfer rules right now is that there
is a coach always has a monetary means to leave
and get out of his buy out. What means does
a player have except for time, you say you should
(01:13:56):
give up twenty of his ultrability given up, He's not no, no,
no, no no, no no no no. He's not giving up.
He's not giving up any of his eligibility. He's not
giving up. No, he's not. That's not that's not giving up.
You still get to play the exact same amount of time.
You just have to go sit out. If he's already
used his red shirt, he's giving up his eligibility, if
(01:14:17):
you like, if he's already used his red shirt, then
he goes and sits out, he can grab transfer and
not sit out anyway, if he's already used his red shirt. Like,
by the way, now you can play four games in
red shirt. The system is so screwed up where players
can transfer. It's actually the opposite. This is crazy, like crazy.
What happens the coach get coach, So a coach gets on.
So you're saying, as the coach gets fired the juniors
(01:14:38):
and it's the same thing or only of a coach league.
I understand, but you're but you're saying, it's only fair
if a coach leaves, if a program successful, that means
a program successful, that program will be decimated by it
for the next coach decimated. You have no no sophomore
freshman sophomore class. There's no practicality that at all, Joel
(01:14:59):
zero Roads, Well no, First of all, I think you're wrong.
Second of all, I think that there are players that,
even if they were allowed to open transfer Wooden, but
the players that feel like they were like to should
be allowed. If I'm a red shirt freshman, okay, I've
used my my red shirt here, I'm not anywhere close
to graduating, and my coach, who I committed to leaves
(01:15:23):
on his own accord, why should I be stuck? Well?
What what? What if you're Why does it matter if
you're just a freshman. What if you're a junior? You
know I've told you that upper classman. Listen, I don't mind.
I don't mind not be allowed to here. Here's what
he's here's the easy fix to it for me. For me,
I would say, hey, look, if you want to get
that year back, you can go and sit and red
(01:15:44):
shirt another year at somewhere else. Because by the way, now,
no I'm saying, I'm saying you can get six. I'm
playing cards with my brothers. No, no, no six, that
you get six to play four? Okay, Because I I
think the grad transfer rule sucks too, because now guys
that transfer early can transfer a second time. That's not
the intent of the rule. The intent is the grant
greater access to a grad degree for a kid who
(01:16:05):
does the right thing right. So my thing is, don't
penalize the school, don't penalize the kid, don't penalize anybody.
Just simply all right, you want to transfer, sit out,
go ahead, transfer, you sit out again. You still get that,
you still get your year back. I think that we
are are far too restrictive, in particular on young players
with what they can and can't do, when the restrictions
(01:16:26):
seem minimal at best, but they're not. They're not. You're talking.
You're talking of what's happening on the field. How many
times does that happen this year? I mean, you see,
you bring up a good point. I don't think that
this would ruin or decimate programs. I do think. I
do think that in the instances where a coach who
has recruited and gotten kids to commit to him and
(01:16:49):
buys into him and he says, hey, peace, I'm out,
why should the kids be held accountable and say you're
forced to stay there and play for a guy who
you have no idea is coming in. You're not forced,
You're not forced to stay there. You can transfer, you
can stay. You simply have your eligibility the problem and
(01:17:10):
look again, my My fix to that would be, you
can you can still get that, you can still read
shirt and sit out another year and still not not
lose a year. So I yeah, the problem would play
for right, That's what I just said. The problem with
the problem with the you can leave if your coach
leaves is well, then what if your coach gets fired
wise in the same thing, And then you're like, well
what about it if assistant coach leaves, that's really the
(01:17:31):
guy that recruited me, right, So it all gets kind of,
it all gets where assistant coach leaves. Now do I
get to do this? It's very convoluted. I would say though,
that the players had a direct hand and getting that
coach's next job at the ups and leaves because they
were successful in the field for him, did what was
right and they achieved for him to go get some
sort of financial windfall, you would assume. But by the way,
(01:17:53):
by the way they would all they would all leave
that they did not achieve on the field, by the way,
most of them, most of them would leave and then
go play for the coach immediately who who where they went?
And again I don't think that I would allow them
to just go to that coach. Wait wait, wait, wait wait,
you said they were too restrictive, and now you're putting
you can't follow the coach. I got I gotta, I
gotta go. This is this is great. I just there
(01:18:15):
is a practicality issue with it that I want you
to really think about. We'll do it next time. Okay,
you got it, all right? I love you. That's uh.

of a previous show on Fox Sports Wonder Fox Sports Radio.
We call it Cow and Cowherd with the herd, which
I'll be hosting after the holidays. After the holidays for
a couple of days. UM had this to say in
regards to Aaron Rodgers. Every Rodgers making the Pro Bowl
(01:19:26):
instead of Russell Wilson, this is an all time snub.
Coaches are thirty percent of the vote, players are thirty
percent of the vote, and fans are thirty percent of
the vote. So fans did not have that much influence.
This should not have happened. Aaron Rodgers made the Pro
Bowl and Russell Wilson did not of the vote was
not fans think about this? A Aaron and Russell Wilson
(01:19:47):
played Russell one head head. They both played well, but
Russell beat him. B This was a rebuilding year for Seattle.
I'm from Seattle. I had him at like seven and
nine x and ten. The Packers were picked to win
their division. So don't expectations means something in a Pro Bowl?
How about this one? Russell's beating him in statistics. That's
(01:20:09):
usually Aaron's thing, right, we know Aaron's maybe not the
greatest personality to the leader, but passer rating Russell touchdown
passes Russell wins Russell, completion percentage Russell, So he's winning
in stats. How about the other thing? And this is
not a small thing. Aaron's own seven on the road.
There's only two teams in the NFL that don't have
a road win, the Niners with their twenty seven quarterback
(01:20:32):
and Aaron Rodgers. M that's interesting. Look the I love
what Colin does this where he's like stats stats, Look
at this stat, Look at that stat? What about yards?
That's actually Rodgers interceptions. Rogers only has to write what
puts you in best position to not lose a game
is to turn the ball over less. Like we could
(01:20:53):
go through things where Aaron Rodgers actually is. My personal
belief is that, first of all, let's not give guys
credit for road wins and road losses and whatever. Like.
Do I think you get that in Sir Bowl. Yeah,
but it is a team sport. And I think that
Russell Wilson has had an outstanding season in comparison to expectations,
but that's not what we judge whether you should be
(01:21:15):
a Pro Bowl quarterback. Some of this his reputation, some
of it was because of what we saw the first game,
but we don't watch all of the games. We don't
watch all the Seattle games. We just don't. We don't
watch every Aaron Rodgers game, Like nobody watched when they
lost the airs on the Cardinals, But we all watched
that first game against the Bears, didn't we And we're like,
no way he comes back and plays, all right, well,
no way he comes back and wins. And then they
(01:21:36):
started playing, We're like, there's no way he doesn't win
this game. Why god he's waiting watch guys, um. I
think this is a vote not just for Rogers in
terms of reputation, Rogers not turning the football over Rodgers talent,
but it's also kind of a bit of an f
you vote to how they were coached and some of
their personnel. I think that's really what we're like, Look,
(01:21:56):
Aaron Rodgers did all this stuff and his coach, his
coaches weren't very good, His wide receivers weren't very good.
Nobody thinks Jimmy Graham is as good as his reputation
was before he went to Seattle. And you know what,
I don't get fired up over all star voting or
probo voting, especially because most guys don't play in the
Pro Bowl, and I don't actually know. Here's the crazy
thing about the Pro Bowl. People watch it. More people
(01:22:20):
watch Pro Bowls than we'll watch Duke play Carolina. They
just they just do. I don't know anybody who does.
I'm I'm I'm convinced. I'm convinced that the same people
watch w w E watch Pro Bowls. The Seahawks are
on the road of the playoffs. Speaking up on the road,
(01:22:42):
everyone knows about the risks of driving drunk. People get
hurt or killed, You get arrested, incur huge legal expenses,
or even lose your job. If you think drunk driving
is no big deal, you couldn't be more wrong. Drive sober,
or get pulled over. All right, is Lebron gonna get
Anthony Davis this year? We discuss next. Be sure to
catch live and so of the Doug Dot Leap Show
weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports
(01:23:05):
Radio and the I Heart Radio app What Up Doug
Got Leap Show Fox Sports Radio. I've told you, guys,
um that things are and we we know things are different, right,
some things will always remain the same. Those things actually
become creat cliche, right defense When championships etcetera, etcetera. The
(01:23:26):
goaling gets tough, tough do in fact get going. But
but things things do change. Our attention span gets shorter,
our ability to be a global community gets uh, it's easier.
There's there's more, not less. Player movement. Some of this
is a reflection of the collective bar agreement, the power
of the players. A lot of it's a reflection on
what we see at the lower levels, high school, college,
(01:23:47):
especially AU. What's what's fascinating to me is the coverage.
The coverage has made seem things seem more vivid, more
uh uh mallible, all right, Because we can watch every
(01:24:11):
NBA game, we can freak out over losses. Look, last
night was a weird night. The Wizards who could not
have been better, Like John Wall could not have been
better the past couple of games before last night, I
thank you. Like John Wall and Brad Beale apparently the
porchar they don't love playing together. Some of this comes
from John Wall, not a great not a great worker
(01:24:32):
in the off season in terms of being in shape,
kind of plays himself into shape and they got off
to an awful, awful start. But Wall personally had played
much better against the Lakers against the Celtics. Some of
you guys saw that game. I think it was the
last like Friday night. I'm gonna say it was like
a duel with him and Kyrie Irving. It was basically
two guys playing one on one. Kyrie had thirty eight
(01:24:55):
and seven assists on twenty eight shots and John Wall
had thirty four thirteen assists on twenty six shots. Like
John Last night, John Wall played terrible, couldn't make a shot.
They lost to the Atlanta Hawks. Last night, the Lakers
lose to the Brooklyn Nets, and you're like, this is
a weird night in the NBA. Normally it's just we
(01:25:19):
call that Tuesday, you know, Instead it becomes oh, Lakers,
they got out, they got out of piece, Like, didn't
pay attention to the fact the Cavaliers went in beat
the Pacers on the road. The difference is the amount
of coverage. We used to have. Once a week, Peter
Vessey would write a column and there'd be an NBA
(01:25:39):
game on a Sunday, and that's how we caught up
with the league. Now we see it every day. We
can watch every game and there's you know, tens of
talented writers who are insiders who are giving us up
to the minute updates on everybody's thoughts, feelings and health,
and so it it. It does become a little bit
of over an elysis. Tom Brady plays poorly, Tom Brady
(01:26:04):
is over the hill, am I. I'm not gonna say that.
It's not incorrect to say Tom Brady is older. He
hasn't played as well, but did We watched Joe Montana
later in his career and judge every thrower every Sometimes
guys just have bad games. I've watched the coverage of
Aaron Rodgers and there was a couple of throws and
he just missed against the Chicago Bears, Like, dude, what
(01:26:26):
was that? But I don't remember if far missed even
in his prime or if Aaron Rodgers missed even his prime.
You know why, because I didn't have the ability to
watch every Green Bay Packer game like I do now,
and I didn't have Twitter, where you have guys that
go and get the all twenty two footage and then
break down every throw. Don't get me wrong, the coverage
(01:26:46):
is better, the analysis is more exact, but sometimes it's
too exact. It's a lot like the NBA. You know,
when they review calls like, oh, the ball went up.
Sometimes I don't know if you guys know this, Sometimes
they give the ball to the team that's deserving, even
if it went off of them. Right, That actually happens.
(01:27:09):
Sometimes they give the ball to the team that's deserving, like, uh,
you miss a call, Like, man, I missed one, so
I'm gonna give you the ball out of bounds. Now
you can't do that because now you have the I
want to go to the monitor review it. You see
the monitor like, wow, they really butchered that one. They
might not have butchered it. They might have been trying
to just give it to the rightful team even if
(01:27:29):
it wasn't the right call. But you can't. It becomes
we we we analyze it too much. We analyze every
like look, Joe Montana, John Elway, Dan Marino, they had
terrible games, they made terrible throws. Now it's the percentage
of times can they still make the reads? Can they
(01:27:51):
still make the throws? What's the percentage of times you
make poor throws and poor reds? And that to me
what's interesting. Um, I want to defend something that happened
today on two different levels, like two different levels Nathan
(01:28:13):
Peterman today signed with the Oakland Raiders. Now I joked
about it, and most people will that nothing tells you
a team is tanking like signing Nathan Peterman to play quarterback. Statistically,
I can't think of anybody who's ever been any worse
than Peterman during his few starts in the National Football League.
It started in l A last year when he had
(01:28:34):
five interceptions in the first half. In the first half
against the Chargers, it was one of those don't come
out moments. He started two games this year, he threw
seven picks, one one touchdown. In his career, he's played
in eight, he started four, he's won one. He's throwing
(01:28:57):
three touchdowns and twelve interceptions. But one we know that
John Gruten historically likes to collect quarterbacks. When he got
fired in Tampa last time, he had four two. He's
buying on the cheap. This is a penny stock. There
is a penny stock, like you're talking minimum money, and
(01:29:21):
he's a guy who evaluated it. Now, that doesn't mean
that doesn't mean that he'll ever be good, he'll ever
be a starting quarterback. But if he could be a
viable backup quarterback, maybe a spot starter as the Raiders
work through trying to find a cheap option at quarterback
if they get rid of deir Car or even if
they keep him. Buying a penny stock in week seventeen
(01:29:45):
the season, it's not a crazy idea. Who's the biggest
bust in the NBA in the last twenty five years. Um,
there's a lot of different options, but dar Ko's name
comes up. A lot of people go like Darko Militich.
Al right, Darko Mills. Now I will tell you and
(01:30:06):
this is my honest opinion. My evaluation of Darko was, um,
would I have taken you know, d Wade or uh?
Would I have taken Chris Bosh probably ahead of him. Yes,
was my first year doing the NBA draft. I just
got done playing in France, I played in Russia. I
actually played against Darko when I was in Israel the
year before. He was seventeen years old, and though I
(01:30:28):
would not have taken him to he would have been
a top five draft pick. He was left handed, he
was the youngest player in the draft and thin. He
was eighteen years old, and he was a what would
be a modern modern day big guy. Could robble, pass
and shoot, but he went to the wrong team. He
went to a team that had when it was in Detroit. Yeah,
(01:30:54):
he went to Detroit when they were really, really, really good.
He went to Larry Brown, who not only didn't speak
to the language, doesn't like young players. And it was
at a time where most European bigs were seen as soft,
even if Yugoslavian players aren't soft. He personally wasn't ready
(01:31:14):
and that emotionally I couldn't have known. I played against
him as a professional, and I thought, and he kicked
a twenty five year old Mante Milicia who played Longy State,
and he did a really good job against marte um
Darko at twenty one years old with the Orlando Magic
actually average eight a game. That was the best that
and at in Minnesota he averaged nine a game. Now,
(01:31:38):
does that mean he should have been a number two overall? Pick? No?
Was was his? Uh? Was the But but it does
admit this, that the possibility you can screw up a kid,
obviously with how you raise him. Many of you are
dealing with this with your substantial you're with your significant other.
(01:31:59):
Like my wife thinks that my lifestyle is just so
different from hers. She's like, you have our son playing
sports every day of the week. Was like, yeah, that's
what I did. Like why I just I didn't, you know.
But also she went to school in a small town.
She grew up a mile and a half from her school,
and they had sports in school. They had all the
(01:32:20):
different You don't have that in California. You have to
do club sports or some sort of youth sports. And
everybody drives everywhere. You don't ride your bike, you know,
somewhere because we all think our kids gonna get kidnapped,
even if we live in a great neighborhood. It is
just different how we brought up, so you can and
you can screw a kid up with how he's What
(01:32:41):
would you do to three four? Right? How many dogs?
If you ever rescued an animal where you have to
it takes sometimes months or years to work through the trauma.
That's what Darko went through. I don't know whether he
would have been good enough. The thing that's that brings
me to Peterman. John Gruden famously really like Nathan Peterman
(01:33:02):
so too, by the way, to the Buffalo Bills. Don't
believe me. Last year, in the middle of a playoff run,
they started to him instead of Tyra Taylor or it's
to Rod Taylor. Right. We didn't find that out till
this year in Hard Knocks. That was actually one of
the more telling things that and Todd Haley, uh hated
Hugh Jackson. Hugh Jackson hated Todd Haley. Those are the
(01:33:24):
two biggest things in Hard Knocks this year. The point
is that whether he's rescuing a pound puppy, whether he's
trying to fix Darko Millitich, or whether he's just you know,
shopping at Northstrom Rack. And two years ago that was
really in. Now it's at northstom Rack for only fifteen dollars.
(01:33:44):
That used to be at whatever it is. You know what,
Let's see what Gruden can do with it. Because Gruden
evaluated him as a starting quarterback in the nash Football League.
A lot of people thought Nathan Peterman can really play.
Nathan Peterman played a pit He was a good player.
Do you remember the last time Clemson lost anybody? The
(01:34:07):
last time Clemson lost with with the Shawn Watson's or quarterback?
Does remember when that was? That was when Nathan Petermon
was their quarterback for Pittsburgh in Death Valley. That happened
so again, I'm I can make jokes about it. Everybody
can make jokes about like nothing says you're part of
(01:34:27):
tank club, like signing Nathan Peterman, Like oh, that is
a sure fire away of trying to lose. It's like
the Dallas Mavericks last year when you look at your like,
who are these guys playing in the fourth quarter? The
Memphis Grizzlies did this last year, Like Marc Gasol anytime
he played well, like he's out in the fourth quarter.
Can't play him because we want to lose. Playing Nathan
(01:34:48):
Peter and maybe cementing the a man, we we gotta
lose these last two games. This competitive stuff is for
the birds. Or maybe he's trying to rescue a pound puppy.
What happened to ram the Rams offense? I'll ask great
co sell next. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug Dot Leap Show week days at noon Eastern
three pm Pacific. In sports, a trade can make or
(01:35:11):
break your team. It's no different when it comes to
selling or trading your car. You need to make good
choices in with true car, you've got a star in
your roster. So when you're ready to sell or trade
in your car check out Truecar true cash offer not
available in all areas. Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
What happened to the Rams offense? Greatest show on now
(01:35:35):
Natural turf right and all of a sudden they can't
protect and they can't run the ball, they can't throw
the ball. What is going on? We need a doctor.
He's not a dot Way. He should be a doctor.
He's been doing it long enough. He should be granted
doctoral status. He's great co sell from NFL films. He
joins us in the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:35:55):
You you you identify problems and try and solves for
NFL teams. Can you identify the route of the problems
with the with the l A. Rams. I think there's
a couple of things. I think over the last month,
uh five six weeks that Jared Goff has not been
as sharp. He's missed a lot of routine throws open receivers,
(01:36:19):
and I think that's been a problem. Uh. I think
that there are times where teams have played uh some
zone coverages against them, particularly what we call cover four quarters,
and it's caused some problems for them in attacking it.
I think their past protection at times has not been
quite as good. God to me is very much a
(01:36:42):
system based quarterback. Needs to be presented to him and
he needs to see it clearly. He's essentially dug a
primary read passer. So when it's presented to him and
the primary read is there and he gets the clear picture,
he looks really good because he's a very easy, comfortable
throw of football. I don't think he's seeing things quite
(01:37:02):
as clearly now. That results in him playing a little
fast and uh, he's his mechanics are a little bit off.
So it's a number of things. Great Costell joining us
in the Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Cooper
Cup isn't their best player, but it strikes me as
he might be their most important players some of the
little things he does, and one always being a guy
(01:37:25):
that golf likes to call on to. He's actually a
really good blocker. Uh. They've used him in some jet
sweep stuff like he just he does a lot of
little stuff. How much is the loss of Cooper Cup hurting, Well,
you know, it's I think it's easy to look now
and say that that's a major factor because since he's
been out, clearly the offense has has struggled a bit.
I think he's really really good versus own. I think
(01:37:46):
he has a great feel for finding voids and for
settling into voids within the timing of the drop of
the quarterback and the route concept. And that presents uh,
he presents himself friendly, so to speak to Jared Goff, So,
I think that that factor is very important. You know.
It's funny though, this particular week against the Eagles, what
(01:38:06):
really struck me the Eagles were playing with a five
nine corner in automatics and a limited cover corner and
restooled Douglas and the Rams never really attacked on the outside,
and that just struck me watching the tape as to
why wouldn't they do that. I think when you're when
you are in that situation, you need to block it
up and you need to attack on the perimeter. And
(01:38:28):
they did not do that against the Eagles. That's the
voice of Greg cos Sally joins us in the Doug
Gotli Show here on Fox Sports Radio. UM. I started
the show Greg saying like, look, you guys in NFL
films for forty years have have had all these tapes.
Um Now we can all watch all these games and
because the sports radio and sports television all the different
(01:38:49):
the various shows that talk about the NFL all week,
we we do breakdown not just every game, but every
throw are more thoroughly than we ever had before, which
I think sometimes causes an overreaction because we don't have
the context. We don't have a context of Hey, I
don't know if Joe Montana missed three throws or four
throws a game. Okay, you do. You've watched this for
(01:39:11):
years and evaluated for years. Uh, Tom Brady is he
missing more now then he used to previously? And how
does he compare to other of the older passer varieties?
You know, see, when I watch tape, I'm looking at
specific games and tactics, Doug, you know, for instance, this
(01:39:33):
particular week. Obviously, because of the score, the assumption must
be that Tom Brady had a bad game and miss throws.
But you have to look at it from the perspective
of what the Steelers defense did. The Steelers defense actually
did a number of things that they don't normally do.
So they game plan specifically for the Patriots in many
ways the way Bill Belichick game plans specifically for opponents.
(01:39:57):
They disguised a lot of looks. They double team Gronkowski
Gordon Edelman at different times throughout the game depending on situations.
So they presented looks to Tom Brady and to the
entire offense that my guess is they were not necessarily
expecting to see. So even a quarterback that's a great quarterback,
(01:40:18):
it slows down the process and that's just normal. So
you know, we can debate forever about well, he missed
a throw, so that means he's losing it. You know,
I think you have to be careful about that. You
have to look at each game and look at the
tactics that are deployed by the opponent in each game
as a separate entity. How fixable are their flaws? Um, well,
(01:40:42):
let me ask you a question, and I say this, honestly,
let's go back two weeks to that fluky play at
the end of the game. If that play doesn't happen,
would we be discussing this. No, we'd say, Hey, they
lost to a tough team in Pittsburgh that needed a win,
and people would have given the usual garbage about the
Steelers wanted it more because they needed it more than
(01:41:03):
usual garbage, and we wouldn't be discussing this, so you know,
it gets to your point about overreaction. I think you
have to be careful about that. Yeah. No, look, you know,
I know with something will play doesn't mean that you're
either great or terrible. I completely I completely agree, And
that's what happens with It's a lot like the Pittsburgh Steelers,
right like had you know Big Ben was hurt against Oakland,
(01:41:25):
he had the kind of the flukey interception where you
know against uh against Denver, you know they win one
or both of those games. And the conversation about Pittsburgh
is completely different. People are too result instead of process oriented.
Let let me ask you about the Kand City Chiefs
who had a big lead, and everybody points their defense.
That's easy. It's easy to point their defense. Their offense
(01:41:46):
did have a three and out when all they needed was,
you know, to run the clock out or to get
three more points at home and and win the game.
And so I'm asking you how different or how how
much has it change them when you'll lose a guy
at running back who led the league in Russian like,
I think they showed that they got some depth at
(01:42:08):
running back, but there was a reason that Kareem Hunt
was their starter. They led the league in Russian. How
much different is that offense without him? Well, I would
answer that this way. I think in the NFL, despite
the belief, which is true that you your quarterback needs
to be pretty high level for you to be a
true contending team and perhaps a Super Bowl winning type team,
(01:42:28):
that it is still a league in which balance is
required at times. Now, that doesn't mean every week you
need to run at thirty five times, but there are
times every week, normally against good teams in particular, where
you need to line up and run the football. They
struggled with that, and when they don't then get the
big plays. In the past game, they only had two
pass plays of twenty plus yards against the charges and
(01:42:49):
one was a screen. So therefore their offense really kind
of got shut down. And Patrick Mahomes has been phenomenal.
You can make the argument that he's the league MVP,
but there's still a looseness to his game. There's an
undisciplined nature to his game. Is he going to be
the kind of quarterback? And only time will tell that.
That's when it's third and six will throw a seven
(01:43:11):
yard pass for a completion, in a first down. Those
are the plays that matter when you start to play
against the better opponents. What did the Colts do to
stymy the Cowboys offense? Uh? You know, it's funny you
say that, because I don't think they necessarily did anything
particularly special. I think that they can controlled at times
the line of scrimmage. I thought personally that, uh, well,
(01:43:35):
let's answer it this way. I think that their defensive
coordinator has become a lot more multiple over the last
two or three weeks. I think they've been a little
more pressure oriented. They were very low percentage blitz defense
through the first twelve thirteen weeks of the season. I
think now they're showing a little more pressure. They're attacking more,
they're more multiple with their front looks. They're just doing
(01:43:56):
some different things over this last month that I think
are probably causing problems. And I also think that it
was a game where some of Dak Prescott's issues showed up.
And and DA's a very week to week kind of player.
This particular week he had his poor lower body mechanics
were an issue. He was a little slow to eliminate
and isolate. He thlush some throws on the field. He
(01:44:18):
was a little inaccurate. So there are times when he
gets like that, and this particular game he was in
addition to the other issues they had, and it's kind
of shut down their offense. Great Coastal joining us in
the NFL films Doug Gotli show, Fox Sports Radio, what
have teams done? You talked about the lack of top
end speed guy that can really scare a defense. But uh,
(01:44:39):
it seems it seems that they people talking about the Saints. Yeah, yeah,
What's what's happened sat offense? Well, you know, I think again,
they're very scheme based, with a great offensive coach in
Sean Payton and a great great quarterback and Drew Brees,
but they're not a high level of talent offense. So
very often, if the schemed play calls for whatever reason,
(01:45:00):
if the timing is just off, if maybe the past
rush impacts the quarterback, whatever reason, if the defense actually
recognizes it and takes away the throwing lane, there can
be any number of reasons, then you can struggle. And
that's what's been happening because the reality is, and I
hear people talk about this all the time, and I
just don't understand it. They say, boy, they're so talented,
(01:45:22):
they're not particularly talented. They've got Michael Thomas, who's a
certain kind of receiver doug and great at it, but
he's not a vertical explosive dimension. And the other player
they have in the past game is Alvin Kamara, who's
definitely a dangerous matchup weapon. But beyond those two, they're
they're very scheme based. They don't have receivers that a
defense says, we have to take away those guys. They
(01:45:45):
need ted gain to come back. Yeah, they need somebody
they've they've been searching for that, you know, Kendricks giving
them a little something. You know, they use Benjamin Watson's
like one of the great guys in the league, but
you know he's in his thirties. There's a reason that
that people have been able to kind of take them away.
If you have, if you have is a fair of you.
A linebacker that can run, linebackers that can run, it
changes that dynamic complete. And the reality is, um that
(01:46:09):
they have not runned the ball as well this year
with their two headed monster as they did a year ago.
And I believe they were a top five rushing team
in the league. Um, I want to ask you about
Sam Donald. Uh, people I know in the league are
really impressed by his toughness and that you know, he's
not doting no talent, not a good offensive line, um,
but but a lot of it he's having to do
where he's trying to kind of run around and make
(01:46:30):
a play on his own. Does this help him or
is he going to set him back at all next
year because he's not sitting back there going through his progressions.
There's a final line there. I've been impressed with him
mostly because I think he sees things for the most
part correctly for a rookie quarterback. Uh. You know, he's
a little bit of a funky thrower. That's just the
way he throws the ball. So I had to work
(01:46:52):
through myself that the fact that he doesn't throw a
lot of balls on balance. But I think that's just
what he shows he throws the ball. We know, as
you said, he has very good second reaction ability. You
can improvise and make plays. I think he's willing to
make difficult throws. He's willing to turn it loose. Um.
So I think for the most part, Doug, he's had
a pretty impressive rookie season. Um. You know, obviously it's
(01:47:15):
been up and down at times, as all rookie quarterbacks
mostly are. But I think that he's he's been pretty
good and I'm looking forward to actually seeing him improve. Yeah,
me too, looking forward to seeing when they put some
talent around Greg Cosell. He doesn't need talent around him.
He simply delivers in a weekly basis. Great, great work.
Thanks so much for joining us. Dog appreciate it. Thank you.
Pleasure is all mind. Great co sal NFL Films kind
(01:47:36):
of to spend a segment with us every week here
on the Doug gott Leaves Show. Let's get you over
to Steve the Seger for us. So much NFL news,
starting with Cam Newton, the Carolina quarterback, and that team
is lost sixth straight, is being shut down for the
year by the Panthers. Newton had shoulder surgery nearly two
years ago. Quarterback Taylor Heineke will start this Sunday for
the Panthers against the Falcons. Atlanta running back DeVante Freeman
(01:47:59):
is going on i R with a knee injury. Lions
running back carry On Johnson goes on injured reserve with
a bad knee this year. At least he had to
Detroit streak of seventies straight games without a hundred yard rusher.
Dolphins running back Frank Gore heads two injured reserved with
a sprained foot. The Giants say they are not considering
shutting down wide receiver Odell Beckham. He's missed the last
couple of games with a quad injury. Packers quarterback Aaron
(01:48:20):
Rodgers says he will play Sunday at the Jets. L
A Chargers wide receiver Keenan Allen returned to practice after
a hip injury. Brown's defensive back Denzel Ward returned to practice.
He'd missed the last couple of games due to a concussion.
The Rams expect running back Todd Gurley, with his sword,
need to play Sunday at Arizona. The Arizona Cardinals claimed
x Rams return man Pharaoh Cooper. The a f c's
(01:48:42):
Offensive Player of the Week is l A Charger wide
receiver Mike Williams. Minnesota running back Dalvin Cook took the
NFC honors. The Raiders are signing quarterback Nathan Peterman to
their practice squad. The other backup for Oakland is a J. McCarn,
but his wife just gave birth last night. Pittsburgh running
back James Conner with his bad ankle, says he's still
not ready to re turned to game action as of today.
(01:49:02):
The University of Arizona quarterback Khalil Tate will return to
the Wildcats twelve NBA games tonight, including Chicago seven and
twenty four, hosting a Brooklyn team that's now one sixth straight.
Zach Lavina the Bulls with a bad ankle, will miss
another two to four weeks. Guys will do anything to
get out of practice, even sprain their ankle. He's already
missed about a week. Miami guard Gore and Dragas had
(01:49:22):
knee surgery today. He'll be out another couple of months.
And the University of North Carolina gave basketball coach Roy
Williams an extension through eight, when he will be seventy
seven years old. He earned over two mills this past year.
That's it. Look, it's it's an important distinction. Or make
sure I point this out to Carolina fans list. But
I see Gottliebe, he's not retiring. When you were on CBS,
(01:49:43):
you said he was retiring. This's not what I said.
What I said was and this was the year in
which they lost a national championship on a last second shot. Uh,
they were at the time under an n c A
investigation was like six years long, that there was a
lot of people in college best but like, look, real
William's best friend died. He had had to have knee
replacement surgery, his hips were bad, and he just doesn't
(01:50:04):
have any fun. Just didn't look like he was having
any fun. And I was like, look, I wouldn't wouldn't
surprise people in basketball if he won a championship, maybe
you know, maybe got to the final four, if he
just decided I've had enough. Now, obviously that was wrong.
It's okay to say you're wrong about things, but let's
put it in context. Uh. And I think his team's
(01:50:26):
got a chance to win it this year. They really do. Yes,
Ryan Music, you gotta hand up. I know it might
have been a different topic, but there was something you
had it and then you didn't have your hand up.
I thought I thought you were like my my son's
they his teachers like he's a blurd. Like what you
meanss like it did burn stuff out? Like now he's
not like Ryan Music Music nicely puts up his hand. Um,
(01:50:50):
there's growing talk in the NBA, and this is like,
no surprise. We talked about a little bit. Anthony Davis
wants to be a Liaker, right and I love the
idea where where uh he was asked about the idea.
(01:51:10):
Lebron James openly pondered about having um him alongside him.
He's asked about Anthony Davis playing with him. He's like,
that would be amazing. This is last night after they
lost the Nets. That would be amazing. Liked, that would
be incredible. Now he's under contract for next season as
a player option this season afterwards, so uh, you know,
(01:51:33):
part of it is. Part of it is that everyone
knows he's reapped by Rich Paul, that the Lakers want him.
He probably wants to be with them, but because he's
under contract for another year and a half, he has
the leverage go like, look, you trade me now, you
can get something for me, but if you wait, you're
not gonna get anything and I'm not coming back, which
(01:51:58):
I actually believe is a a solid thing to do
for a dude like it. It may suck if you're
the Pelicans. You're sitting there going like, dude, we've given
will give this guy anything. He's possibly wanted except a
team that can win. He's given you seven years of service.
Seven Um, so do I think it's a I think
(01:52:22):
it's a bad thing. I think it's a planted story.
I think he was asked about it for a reason.
I don't think he should have said anything about it.
But when asked an honest question, you give an honest answer.
Should they trade for him? Sure, but I just went
over pay for him. You still have leverage, you still
(01:52:44):
have there's there's no sign of desperation. If you're the Lakers. Now,
if you can get Anthony Davis, now you got a
shot to win with him by the end of the season.
It does take that law. You can't just like, hey,
trade debt, trade deadline gets really really tight in terms
of developing chemistry and cohesion. But that doesn't mean I would.
(01:53:05):
I mean I think part of the core of what
they've built they really like. Everybody's like, well, you trade Ingram,
you trade Heart, you trade uh, you trade Alonzo. I
think you trade Ingram. I think you trade Alonzo. I
don't think you trade heart. Even if Heart, truth be told,
(01:53:27):
isn't really a starting guard. He's more of a bench guy.
He's the core of what you want. And by the way,
Lonzo Ball has played pretty well recently, like all of
this stuff has happened as they thought it would happen,
which is the younger players have shown themselves to be better.
And the one guy who's kind of struggled as Ingram,
But it's not like he's been terrible. He's a good
(01:53:48):
versatile player. So if I'm the Lakers, do I trade
for him? Yes, if I can get him for a
reasonable trade. But it's when you overpay, that's when you
get yourself in trouble. When you get desk, when you
get desperate. Everyone knows it. Don't shop hungry. How many
three for ones do you need to see? Where you're like, well,
(01:54:08):
that's not a great deal. Even the Clippers who dealt
away Chris Paul, like, are they better? No, but they're
going to be long term, I think in better shape
than Houston. As Chris Paul, you feel like obligated to
re up Chris Paul at this point his career with
a huge deal which forever handcuffs them to do anything.
Whereas the Clippers bought themselves freedom in the market, same
(01:54:32):
thing with the Clippers in the Pistons so, um, but
I think this is a plan, is I don't. I
think Rich Paul's group does a poor job of leaving.
They leave fingerprints. They're like my kids, right, like who
is like who who went and got the cookies? Like
I don't know, like crumbs all over themselves? Who was
(01:54:57):
in the cabinet? I don't know. Well, that's funny because
the right next to your bed. That's like Rich Paul's group.
They do this all the time. They just do a
bad job of leaking stories. Does that really matter though
for them? Like do you think they care? Rich Paul
and their group doesn't really? Because you're right, it does
(01:55:18):
seem like everything they do is very obvious, which leads
me to believe that they actually don't really care all
that much. Um, I I think I think they I
think they're trying to They're trying to make it so
that they hurt. They know. Here here's why I think
they do it. They know the Lakers want to do it,
(01:55:40):
and they want the world to know that that Anthony
Davis wants to be there. They also know that the
Lakers aren't going to overpay, and so the only way
to get the Lakers so they don't have to overpay
is make it so that Anthony Davis like, look, I'm
going to l a you guys figured out, and that
hurts his value because if it's if it's not publicly known,
publicly shared, it becomes rumor. And that's where they go like, hey,
(01:56:03):
look he could go anywhere. So yes, I do I
think they care. No, I actually think they like it
that it's out. I just I don't like. I don't.
That's not how I would do business. I think business
is better done when the thing all of a sudden
there's a trade and it gets done and no wain
and even saw it coming. That. That's my way, that
(01:56:23):
would be my way of doing it if I was rich. Paul, Hey,
look and and maybe the maybe the ultimatum was already given. Look,
you can get this done now at what the Lakers want.
You know, they want to give you a contavious Caldwell
Pope's contract which expires, and they give you Ingram and
they give you a pick of one of their other
young guys not named uh not named Kyle Kuzma. You
(01:56:44):
do that, we can get this thing done. We can
handshake deal now. If not, it will become public. One
way or the other maybe that was already done, but
I don't feel like it. I feel like this is
their way of playing a little bit of hardball and
helping the Lakers out. And I'm not sure they've helped
the Lakers out, because it might just might just tick
the Pella kNs off, and it might make the Pelicans like, now,
he's worth three players, and somebody else will pony up
(01:57:05):
and give three players, or the Bulls he's from Chicago,
or somebody else, the Knicks, somebody else will move mountains
in order to get him. You might be doubting Tom Brady,
Bill Belichick isn't find out why? Next, be sure to

the quiver, the quivering. Let's love right here? You do running?
(01:57:46):
That's h huh. Best class ever took in college History
of rock and roll. Actually took it a gold must
College in between Better Dame in Oklahoma State and um
people talk about like sexual innuendo. The term rock and
roll is actual sexually innuendo. But UM, I also learned
(01:58:09):
that Elvis Presley's hill his uh his hill Billy hiccop
you know you know where? You know where he got
that from? Right? Who is the pride of West Texas?
Um who's famous famous doop singer and also had kind
of the same He'll billy hiccup? Do you want you
(01:58:29):
want to take a shot? Do you guys, do you
wanna take a shot to singer? Do not know where
you're going with this? You don't at all? The country
singer was as rock and roll singer. Rock and roll singer.
So you're like talking the nineteen forties, I think fifties.
I think fifties. Yeah, somebody named tex No Buddy Holly
(01:58:53):
he did that. Yeah, listen, think about what what a
Buddy Holly's famous songs? Anybody does anybody want to go
with Buddy Holly's Like, what's right? Yeah? What else? That'll
be the day? That'll be the right. There's a he'll
be a hiccup in there. That's the press that'll be
(01:59:18):
the day anyway. Sorry, I'm a terrible singer. I do
like music a great deal. I was trying to teach
my son about awesome rap music and he was like, Dad,
this is old people music. I was like, E P. M.
D is not old people music. He's like, it's old, isn't.
I was like, it's still good anyway. By the way,
that needs to be edited out as a drop when
he just said I do like music very well. I
(01:59:38):
like I like music, music, and I like music. The
producer Bill Belichick item is. Obviously people have been second
case guessing Tom Brady for the week, but the Patriots
coach did not do it. At his press conference regarding
the decision late game against Pittsburgh and where he threw
(01:59:58):
the ball you're the last play, there was a lengthy
defense from the long time head coach of his long
time quarterback. Among the things Belichick said via transcript was well,
Tom's very experienced quarterback in our system and very experienced
playing against our opponement. You can second guess it if
you want to. Nobody knows better at that time with
the ball in his hands, where he feels like he's
(02:00:19):
got the best chance. Uh yeah, I mean it's interesting
he chose to not throw him under the bus, which
there's a lot of things Belichick does does that people
don't like, right, Like, we don't say anything. We didn't
say anything either way, I didn't anything anyway. Now he
just cuts people sometimes, no talk at all. Patrick Peterson
(02:00:44):
named to a Pro Bowl last night. Years old, his
eighth already actually twenty eight and a half, which means
the same age as Barry Sanders when he was named
to his eighth Pro Bowl. Jim Brown was also under
age twenty nine when he was named to his eighth
Pro Bowl decades ago. Yeah, astanding a little bit that,
Like I think he's a good player, but I think
a little bit of his reputation. Right, It is a
(02:01:04):
Pro Bowl, as we've talked about. Yeah, I mean a
little that, Mike, But it is amazing that here's the
team who has Larry fitzerd is not what he used
to be, but you can still catch. He still can't catch.
To have David Johnson, they got Patrick Peterson, Um, who's
the other wide receiver. I'm thinking this really good? Oh,
Like I like Christian Kirk a lot, and they stink
(02:01:25):
they're bad because on defense, you're right. YEA. Honestly, Robert
kim DJ doesn't play hard. You know. That's that's the
whole thing. Like he has started to be a pro
that I've seen when he When he plays hard, he's
a monster. But he does not. This brings his full
circle on the Pro Bowl thing we mentioned first hour
rookie linebacker of the Colts, Darius Leonard not selected as
(02:01:46):
a Pro Bowl. He was shocked that he was not
selected as a Pro Bowl. He's the NFL leading tackler.
His teammate Eric Ebron says, Darius Leonard told me he
wants forty tackles against the Giants this weekend. I told
him humanly impossible. He doesn't care things like the Pro
Bowl should go by stats instead of names. He's one
of the all time great rookie linebackers statistically in a
(02:02:08):
long time. I think it's tremendous. I think Rokan Smith
is tremendous, tremendous. If you're gonna tell me Derwin James
or Darius Leonard, I'm gonna take Derwin James and we'll
see the As we mentioned earlier, Rookie of the Year
vote in the a f C between those two soon
at Frank Gore. Among the running backs put on I R.
Carrie on Johnson and Davonte Freeman as well. But for
(02:02:29):
Frank Gore it ends his streak of a hundred twenty
six consecutive games played, The longest for any NFL running
back as far as consecutive starts recent years, had been
Eddie George, who went eight or nine years in a row,
starting every game one thirty in a row. Gore turns
thirty six in the off season, becomes a free agent
in May. He's actually top five in NFL history in
(02:02:50):
rushing yards and in yards from scrimmage. He look, he's
a stat compiler. I think he's gonna make the Hall
of Fame like guarant because he's never been a top
five running back in the league. I don't believe I
had a top five season, but the longevity at that position,
and I mean, like, obviously I love him in Miami
playing to you. Remember he's he suffered two torn a
c ls during his his football life. Unleas smaller than me. Unbelievable. Unbelievable, dude.
(02:03:14):
Final item from baseball Manning Machado has left the building
after a Yankees visit of an hour and a half
today on to meet with the Phillies. According to the
Philly Inquirer, the Yankees wanted Machado to explain his postseason
antics the Johnny Hustle comment, but he's likely to get
the full red carpet sales pitch from the Phils tomorrow.
Get out there and pressed. That was the press. It
(02:03:36):
doesn't feel like a Yankee to me, especially in a
Yankee short stop. It feels like a Philly or a
White sock let. The White Sox have him in, Bryce Harper,
we got a great show. Brad Stevens will join us tomorrow.
Be a lot of fun. Stud gotlip show here on
