(00:24):
Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming to
you from the sunny city of Los Angeles, California, getting
ready for a playoff game. Cowboys come to town this weekend.
Take on the Rams Chargers of course, traveling cross country,
take on the Patriots. And it's interesting. I do think
a little bit of what we saw last night we
may see in New England this weekend. Uh, we'll get

(00:51):
to that coming up. Look. One of my favorite references,
one of my favorite references, John Ramos. Who can we
start the show properly? Congratulations to John Ramos. Huh last
night announced via Facebook, which is that's public information? Basic?
It's really too to public? Actually, ah yeah, well, I

(01:12):
mean maybe you shouldn't have put it on Facebook. John
Ramos got one past the goalie t I shot and
they scored. Whoa little t m I okay, I thought
it was historic thing. Um, but John Ramos is lovely.
Wife Suzanne is uh uh do when when did she do?

(01:34):
This year July to give birth to their third child.
Congratulations to John Ramos. Catching up with you, Doug good
you go from man to zone two to three? Way
to go there? Where you go there? Johnny boy? Yeah,
be miserable like the rest of us are ago anyway.
Um Ramos is a huge cinophile. He's a big movie buff.

(01:55):
He goes, he uses his Fox Sports connections to get
to all Go all the premiers and then views random
people when we have that. I'm kidding. He does a
great job. Look. One of my favorite movies is Multiplicity. Multiplicity.
Do you remember the Michael Keaton movie Multiplicity. The Michael
Keaton movie Multiplicity basically is there's a guy and kind

(02:18):
of like most guys, he just doesn't have any time.
He doesn't have any time to play golf, to go
out with the dudes, to even sometimes be a dad.
He's just like working, working, working, and he feels like
he's missing life. And so there's a company that can
splice his jeans and create a a a copy, a
genetic copy of him. Things go awry though, when there's

(02:43):
a copy of a copy right. And this of course,
if you remember back when you were a kid and
we had these things called VHS tapes, do you guys
remember VHS tapes? And I'm not even gonna start on
Beta Max. Okay, you have a VHS tapes. Those are
the cassette tapes that we used to record things on.
My dad get the first ever cam quarter. There's all

(03:04):
kinds of shots to play me, all sports. But VHS
tapes you could you could splice them, you could copy them.
A buddy could buy a movie and you could have
the two VHS tapes, one tapes the other one. And
occasionally you would have an issue with something called tracking,
tracking tracking. Somebody fixed the tracking tracking problems were all

(03:28):
of a sudden to be like a like a white
line that would somehow appear in the screen and there
was some knob that no one really knew how it worked,
but it would just turn and then there was auto tracking,
and boom, it was fixed. The problem with the tracking
issues was when you would did a copy of that copy,
Now the tape sucked. And if you've ever lived overseas.

(03:51):
I have those the bootleg cassette tapes you would get
a Friday or Friday after Next in the early two
thousand's were a copy of a copy. Not only were
they not in English, but you couldn't usually see him
and would cut out some of the best scenes and
some of the best lines. It feels like Alabama last

(04:13):
night was a copy of a copy. Sure they looked
finally like Alabama had two at quarterback, meaning you've got
a legit pro prospect at quarterbacks, something they haven't really had.
Have they had quarterbacks that have played in that shafketball league, yes,
but have they had a dude at quarterback? But that
was the difference this year Clemson, Ohio State, Alabama, three

(04:38):
programs that usually have the most dudes, or three of
the programs have the most dudes in college football, finally
have a quarterback. But the problem was between the defense,
some of the offense, the running backs, the coordinators themselves.
You had copies of a copy. Like Mike Locksley didn't

(05:02):
suddenly become a genius because he went to Alabama. This
is the same guy was two and twenty six as
a head coach at New Mexico. Now, he got the
job at Maryland because of his relationships in the area
and because he was offensive coordinator for the most dominant,
second most dominant offense in college football. But he was

(05:25):
a he's a copy of a copy, and they ran
up against the real thing. They ran up against a
first run DVD UH direct, you know, skip cinema movie
right to your home, and they got tracking issues. Clemson

(05:47):
was the better team. Saban knew they were the better team.
That's why they went forward and ran fake field goals
and tried a bunch of other stuff that they normally
wouldn't you know why, because normally of the time they
got better players than the other team, and that wasn't
the case last night. Let's get you to Steve to Seger.

(06:07):
We got breaking news in the National Football League. Steve,
what do you got breaking news from Fox Sports? Well,
per sources from Peter Schregor, Cliff Kingsbury is finalizing a
deal to become the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals.
He was with USC about that long. He had met
with Jets ownership last evening and then flew to Arizona
early this morning. Was meeting with the Cardinals today NFL

(06:30):
networking Foxes Peter Schregor, Yeah, Kingsbury to the Cardinals. That
was quick. Um wow, that USC is officially a dumpster fire. Uh.
This is one of those deals where I actually I
liked the higher like, look, you're gonna have You're gonna
win in Arizona if you can figure out the Josh

(06:52):
Rosen thing and that guy can coach some offensive ball.
I mean you kind of go through like man and
he played in the NFL, and he's young enough and
can and relatable enough and will challenge Josh Rosen And
obviously can they put a defense? Can he lead men?
I've told you before that and and this actually goes

(07:12):
hand in hand with last night You're gonna get NFL
guys say, how could a guy who couldn't win enough
in college to keep his job become an NFL head
coach Because in coaching in the NFL, it's about coaching ball.

(07:33):
Last night, Alabama was about equal or maybe slightly lass,
but let's just say they're equal to Clemson. Just say
they're equal. That was a coaching mismatch, a game coaching mismatch,
and Saban would tell you as much. Do you know
why Because that's not what Nick Saban does. Somebody does.

(07:55):
Nick Saban's a really good defensive coordinator, a really good
coach who hires really good people and challenges them constantly
to be better. That's what he does. He's a great recruiter,
he's a great leader. He is incredibly organized, incredibly But
let's not act like in game there's been anything special

(08:16):
about Alabama's game plans on the offensive side of the football. Remember,
he fought the tide of of of the trendy uh
tempo offenses for years, even said they were dangerous, dangerous
to college ball players. Last night, when you're playing against
like talent, you actually have to be a good game coach.

(08:39):
You have to add prepare in a short period of time,
and Clemson looked like they had prepared. Now, part of
Clemson preparing was probably Clemson doing what you're supposed to
do in college n I I didn't do. My wife used
to do this right, where you keep up with the syllabus,
you do all the reading. You don't really have to
cram before finals. Whereas Alabama, they they tried to cram.

(09:03):
But even if you asked Nick Sabe, when Nick Saban,
this is a true story, from somebody I know who
I trust. So it's second hand information. I'm not telling
you I was there, but second hand information was this
when he got the job at Alabama. He took the
job at Alabama. He remember his head coach the Miami Dolphins.
I'm not how many times you have to say this,
I'm not gonna be the head coach at Alabama. Remember

(09:24):
that he took the job at Alabama. He was flying
to go on his first recruiting business and he's on
the Alabama team plane and the Alabama president was with
him and he said, we just got the best coach
in America. You know what. Nick Saban said, No, you didn't.
You get the best recruiter in America. Nick Saban may
appear to you as being super arrogant, I actually think
he's the He is the brightest sort of leader that

(09:47):
there is. He has and has had the biggest staff
in college football. He has found some of the brightest
young assistants in college football because he knows enough to
know what he doesn't know, and he hires those people
to do it. And his staff wasn't that good this year.
And Nick Saban and you know, like he's gonna sit

(10:09):
there and solve the offensive riddles in game. Sure they
got outplayed, they also got out coached. Whereas the reason
Cliff Kingsbury didn't survive and succeed at Texas Tech like look,
part of it is that that entire league is wired
for offense. So while if he would have run the

(10:30):
same offense in the same style in the Big Ten,
maybe they set everybody's hair on fire or in the
SEC same thing. But in the Big Twelve you can
score sixties, so what we can score seventy. Coaching in
college football is not only a quarter is actually about
the coaching of It is about recruiting, managing boot boosters,

(10:53):
managing a program, managing your assistance, your trainers, academics, all
of that other stuff. In the NFL, can you coach ball?
And then can you hire people to coach the things
that you don't coach? You can sit here and tell me, well,
Cliff Kingsbury didn't succeed in the Big Twelve, and he
might not succeed in Arizona. He might not. I mean,

(11:18):
they might be a mess. They hired a guy, and
I mean eleven months later they fired a guy. But
the the Green Bay Hackers just hired a head coach
who has never been a head coach and was offensive
coordinator for the twenty nine ranked offense in the league. Right, Like,

(11:40):
what what were your options? It's a completely different profession
coaching in the pros and coaching in college. The pros
is about ball and about leading men. College is about
everything except all. But then last night it did become

(12:02):
about coaching football and Saban. The truth about Saban was exposed.
The truth about Saban is exposed, and that's okay. Saban
knows that he's not an idiot. You don't. You don't
be that successful and not know your weaknesses. You have
n't self scouted. I mean, look, I've said the same

(12:25):
thing Roy Williams. Camp doesn't like me. They don't. They
don't like me. They've never wanted me to call games,
be around a program. And I've said, like, look, he
is a Hall of Fame coach that won I believe
a higher percentage of games than anybody who want a
couple of national titles. You know what he's not. He's
not a great in game X and no coach Dean
Smith wasn't. They'd sub their way out of leads. But

(12:49):
they run an incredible program, and they teach kids how
to play basketball, so the kids can kind of figure
it out on their own. And he has a good
staff and they kind of figure some stuff out. But
if it comes down to X and owen, one play here,
one play there, he didn't know Bill self was in
a tryang go into. A couple of years ago, Villanova

(13:13):
ran a play at the end of the game to
win a national championship that they had run like nine
times during the season. And look, he smartly put his
best shot blocker under the hoop to protect the rim.
But who do you think was Guarden Chris Jenkins. This
is not a shot at Roy Williams. It's just there
are to be a great college coach, sometimes you don't

(13:35):
have to actually be a great X and O coach,
And occasionally when you do this happens you get beat.
When you're used to having better players the time that
other five percent of the time things change and if
you don't have the help on your staff to fix

(13:57):
things on the fly, you're getting better. Alright. So breaking news,
the Arizona Cardinals are hiring Cliff Kingsbury to be their
head coach. I'll give you my thoughts on that, Plus
Joe Klatt joins the show up coming next, What did
last I teach us about Clemson's freshman star quarterback Trevor

Fox Sports Radio, Great Thoughts Quick, Cliff Kingsbury give a

(16:07):
new head coach the Cardinals. I like it. I do.
I like it. Uh, guy's offenses are awesome, awesome, right,
And I think Josh Rosen has got a chance if
you protect him. He's a really really good quarterback. If
I'm the offense, like, look, I I we're all looking
for offensive gurus. And if you know Sean McVeigh apparently,

(16:32):
or you bumped into Sean McVeigh wants at a party,
you can get a job. How about a guy who's
actually played the position, coach the position, been head coach position,
and coach guys that have gone on to start him
in the National Football League like they all square by him.
So will it be challenging to be a head coach
in the NFL, especially when you weren't an overwhelming success

(16:55):
at Texas Tech? Sure, but they've been plenty of guys
who spurrier and say been we're great college coaches. But
being a college coach is not being an NFL coach.
It's just different. It's just different. Sean McVeigh had nothing
to do with the defense last year. Could he lead?
Did he understand the power structure within the locker room?

(17:16):
And can you hire a really good defensive coordinator and
have really good personnel ain't no recruiting. Take a list
of Clip Kingsbury he joined us going back to last month,
get a lot of pride in adapting to the quarterback.
Not trying to make the quarterback sit your system, but
make your system fit the quarterback, right. I mean, people

(17:37):
forget that he had a year, he had a year
and a half there where he had Baker Mayfield, Davis
Webb and Pat Mahomes and they were all great, all great.
They're like, oh well his defense, like, dude is hard
in Lubbock, Texas and you just you can't outscore people

(17:58):
in the Big twelve because everybody can core. There's a
lot more at work in why it didn't work at
Tech than even than just recruiting. When he took the
job at Texas Tech, that's when Baylor had it up
and running a right. So you're doing kind of the
exact same thing at Baylor or doing something similar at
Baylor recruiting recruiting against exact same kids. Remember when he

(18:21):
took over. Also, that was at the tail end and
m was still kind of in the league. So you
got Texas and Oklahoma in Oklahoma state, but Texas Oklahoma
way bigger budgets much better overall players, especially defensive players,
and then everybody in your league outside of Iowa and Kansas.

(18:41):
Maybe Kansas State is recruiting the exact same players, playing
the exact same style. Let's welcome in lead college football
analysts for Fox Sports. He's Joel Lads joined us a
day after college football crowns and national championship Clemson wins
for the second time in four years. You'll help put
in a context what we saw last night in Santa Clara. Yeah.

(19:05):
I mean, I think that there's there's a lot to
glean from that game and and a lot of different
ways that you can look at it. I want to
start by saying that that was the most dominant performance
of a Nick Saban coach team that we've seen yet
in his tenure since he's downt it going, maybe since
that first year that he was at Alabama. So he's
gotta give Clemson a lot of credit. I think you

(19:26):
start with the coaching staff, Doug, and you can say
very clearly that Clemson out coached Alabama top to bottom,
every situation, every point in the field, every facet of
the game, uh, for all four quarters. And maybe that's
born out of the fact that the continuity in terms
of coaching staffs lies with the Clemson Tigers. And and

(19:47):
the fact that Alabama has had to replace thirteen assistant
coaches over the last four years, and those are the
four years in which they've been facing this Clemson team,
and and they've had to do that all four of
these games ug with a different set of coordinators. And
yet Clemson has had the same coordinators in all four
games and only lost two assistant coaches. I think that

(20:08):
was one of the reasons why you saw such disparity
in terms of the game plan. Um I thought to
have played terrible football. He didn't understand what was happening
on the field. They had no ability to locate the
blitz package that Brent Venables was using against them, in
particular when they were motioning into a bunch set and
then it was an automatic slot blitz. And two, I

(20:28):
had no idea what was going on. And I think
a night like last night is going to really hurt
him when he comes to the evaluation for the next level,
because you've got to read and react and locate uh
defenders and the schematics structure of what's happening on the
defensive side and he wasn't able to do that, and
then Trevor Lawrence Doug. I think Trevor Lawrence was spectacular
last night. He was bailed out a few times on

(20:49):
poor throws by spectacular wide receiver play by Ross. But
this kid is the real deal, and he's certainly going
to be touted for the next now two years as
what many be considering one of the best prospects that
we've seen at that position in the recent modern era.
Let's let's go back to to to Ah and the confusion. Um. So,

(21:10):
so what were what was Clemson doing that and why
couldn't he pick it up? I think he couldn't pick
it up because it was an automatic check and and
so you weren't getting indicators out of the entirety of
the structure of defense. So what started happening is is
that any time that the slot receiver or the outside
receiver got close to the what I would call the

(21:30):
inman or the e O L the in man on
the line of scrimmage, they would trigger an automatic blitz
from his defender. And you saw one of the sacks
happened on a play like that, And yet they weren't
messing with the rest of the structure of the defense.
I believe they did that because they saw a tendency
that that wide receiver very rarely was targeted, and and

(21:51):
they saw that tendency over the entirety of the year,
and so they prepared for it, and they ultimately put
that game plan in the action. Then when it works
the first time, then you tried a second time. Then
he tried a third time, and Tua had no ability
to understand where that pressure was coming from. In order
to combat that, do what you have to do is
called the site of just so the wide receiver that's

(22:13):
lined up, if his defender basically comes on a pressure,
he's got a side of just basically cut his route
off and become an outlet for the quarterback right away
in the immediacy of the play. And they weren't doing that.
Their heads were down there running across the field. Tool
was not looking at that defender, and that gave them
all sorts of problems. He was also having a terrible

(22:34):
time locating the corners when they would fall off of
their original player. Twice he threw interceptions because he was
not able to locate the corner who was falling off
the number one wide receiver and getting onto the number
two wide receiver. That happened down the field of the
spot and then to pick six was the exact same thing.
A little dragon conflict slant on the outside and then

(22:54):
a flat route from the inside receiver and the corner
just sat there, jumped the inside receiver and took it
back for six. Um. How much can be can to learn?
Can are these things fixable? Yeah? I think everything is
fixable when it comes to schematics, because it's just about
reps and then getting back out there and not making
the same mistake twice. It also would help if the

(23:16):
offensive game plan was better. You've got to be helped
by your offensive system. You've gotta because Doug is not
solely on him right, like decided just I'm talking about
with the wide receiver. That's got to be built into
the system where the wide receiver understands what he's seeing
as well as the quarterback understanding what he's seeing, and
and he needs to cut his route off and become
an outlet and a weapon then for the quarterback, so

(23:40):
he certainly can get helped by something. I thought it
was one of the worst game plans that locks me
has put together all year long. He takes that the
head coaching job at Maryland, and I mean, I guess
you can say maybe his head wasn't in it, although
it was pretty good against Oklahoma last week. The last
thing I would say about this is it looked to me,
Doug and and I mean, you're a good one to

(24:02):
actually ask and run this by, because you have a
good keen eye when it comes to just game plans
and overall preparedness, regardless of the sport. It looked to
me like Clemson was the team that prepared for Alabama
for a month and Alabama had just the one week
after the semifinal. It looked like to me that Clemson said, hey,
we're gonna beat Notre Dame. We're probably better than them

(24:23):
or just better, you know, physically, and so let's start
preparing for Obama for the entire month. And then those
little adjustments and the enterties, the intricacies within their game
plan ultimately paid huge dividends. You know, It's always interesting
to me. Joe Clad joining us here on the Doug
Gottlak Show. I love when, um, you don't do this,
But there are some that that kind of mail in

(24:44):
analysis which is you know, you give Nick Saban an
extra couple of days to prepare. It's like, hey, you
know the other guy is prepping too, And it is interesting.
You know, teams do this with the n c A tournament,
right like you have one, you have the week leading
up to the games. But sometimes you've got a constrate
in the second game. But you can let the first
game kind of get away from you, or it doesn't
matter how much you preve and put in in for

(25:04):
the for the second game. I think the Locksley thing
is fascinating. Um, whether or not doing two jobs is
in fact difficult for that length of time, the Maryland
job and this job. But but I also wonder if
this was one of the few times in which they
were physically overwhelmed as well or physically at least met
their match, whereas so oftentimes throughout the rest of the

(25:24):
season they were so physically overwhelming that they could get
away with some of these mistakes. Oh well, and you
can make an argument that THEMMA is never on a
field in which they're not the more superior physical team,
and in the cases in which that does happen, they've struggled. Um,
they're not used to it. It's like, you know, like

(25:46):
styles make fights, and and a lot of times when
you've got a boxer who is physically imposing, the last
thing he wants to see is something similar to that
because he can't implore his game plan. Whereas Clemson, they
have been looking at Alabama and targeting Alabama for four years,
so that's they felt more comfortable in that field because
this is what they've been preparing for. And I don't

(26:07):
know if Alabama had that mindset and they looked uncomfortable
with the fact that they were evenly matched in a
football game and that they couldn't just blood in the
other team to death. Um, And I think that from
the psyche aspect of of an athlete, I think that
that certainly played the factor in the last night's game.
Joel Klatt joining us here on the Doug Gotlip Show

(26:29):
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, let's go to the
other side and Trevor Lawrence. Uh, We're always been told
on how complex and how talented Nick Saban's defenses are,
and yet here a true freshman comes in and just
lights it up. How much of that is Lawrence and
how much of that is this defense? Isn't what it
had been said to be um. I'd say a combination

(26:53):
of the two, because Lawrence is brilliant. Like I talked
about a little bit earlier. Now, he did get away
with the four rows just based on great wide receiver
play in particular from Ross, who made some sensational catches.
But he made some reads on what I would say,
are are some difficult things to see post snap, and
he saw them and took advantage of them. One was

(27:15):
a steam right down the kind of the right side
for a touchdown to Rock. He saw the safety's what
I would call stagger, and then you know you're you're
moving to a closed coverage. You're moving to cover three.
The far safety has got the middle third, and yet
he didn't get all the way over to that right half,
so you can expose him in the right half steam
and and that recognition is really graduate level quarterback play.

(27:40):
He was tremendous with that. He's a really good prospect.
And yet also I've talked with coaches that said one
of the way ways that you could attack Alabama this
season was on the edge, and that their secondary was
not quite what it has been in the past, and
that their corners were a little bit suspect, and if
you could protect your quarterback, namely m quinnin Williams, then

(28:01):
you could get them down the field. And so the
offensive line for Clemson did a wonderful job keeping Trevor upright.
When he did have pressure, he did not flinch and
he stood in there and delivered the ball down the field. Yeah,
especially on third down. If you saw the stat this
is when I saw this morning that with the exception
of when they the final drive in the right out
the clock, more than six of Clemson yards two or

(28:23):
thirty five of three came from Trevor Lawrence passes on
third and five plus yards to go. It's really amazing
what they were doing. You know, third, third and fairly long,
and they were able to completely destroy that Alabama defense. Yeah.
They they had clearly some sort of tendency on the
pressure package for Alabama. That's why the game plan they
were so outcoached. When you're talking about red zone inefficiency

(28:46):
for Alabama, for down inefficiency for Alabama, a panic fake
seal goal, the absolutely domination of third down on Ambama
was what three of fourteen I believe in the game
Clemson was hint of fifteen. You talked about the productivity
there and the question of what Lawrence was doing in
the passing game. That is coaching. Now, granted, he's gotta

(29:08):
go out there and make the plays, but that is
understanding tendencies, That is understanding probabilities and then attacking those
tendencies and probabilities. And that's exactly what Clemson did, and
they did a remarkable job of it. I mean that
they handled the best team in college football over the
last ten years, handling twenty eight points. I mean that
could full on beat down and and it and it

(29:31):
could have been worse. UM. Okay, So what does this
mean for the future. Um? I think that these two
teams are for the foreseeable future going to be right
back in this spot. And it's because of the way
that they've recruited, it's because of their overall programs. People
have said like, well, this could be the sign of

(29:51):
things to come for Alabama. I think that that's total crap.
And here's why. They had twenty eight commitments in this
last recruiting class, their number one in the country in
terms of recruiting class. Twenty seven dug of the commitments
are four stars or five stars. That's a remarkable amount.
And the only one that's not, by the way, is

(30:12):
the number one kicker in the country named Will Ryker
from right there in Alabama. So they have recruited at
such a high level that Bama is going to be
right back into this spot. If they can get some
better coaching and particularly from a game planned perspective, they'll
be right there with a chance to beat Clemson next year.
And Clemson has recruited in particularly with those young players
like Ross on the outside etn in the backfield, obviously

(30:34):
Trevor Lawrence at the quarterback position, that if they get
anything from their new front seven having replaced some of
those great defensive linemen, that you're gonna see Bama and
Clemson playing again from the national championship next year. They
have separated themselves from college football. Um, Trevor Lawrence is
a quarterback. There's gotta be some what what is the weakness?
What is the thing that he has to improve upon,

(30:54):
because obviously in the snapshot of the now, you know,
people are freaking out, Hey, if he could come out
right now, he would be at the first five, top
five pick in the NFL draft. Um, he has two
years to kind of to to fix, you know, to
shore up some of the holes. Where are the holes
in his game? When he got pressure last night, they
were successful, but Doug, he wasn't overly accurate with the football.

(31:20):
His wide receivers made some great catches, great catches. Let's
just say it this way. If he's playing the game,
it doesn't have Ross out there on a few of
those third downs and one handed catches. Those are in
completions or people are saying, boy, that was a poorly
thrown ball way back behind the wide receiver. Ross reaches
back over the defensive back two ft behind him running

(31:40):
an out route and catches the ball one handed. So
his ability to slow down in crucial situations under pressure
on third down and still throw the ball accurately, in
particular in the intermediate zones, I think is his next
step in development. He's a fabulous player and he did
prove that at times, but last night it was a
little bit off. He bailed out by those wide receivers.

(32:01):
Reps matter at that position. If you take a look
at all the Super Bowl quarterbacks that have won Super
Bowls in the NFL um currently, you'll see that they
have about a thousand attempts over the course of their
college career, and and they've started about thirty games, so
give him time. He still needs to learn some things,
but he's certainly on his way and has a bright,

(32:22):
bright future ahead of him as one of the best
process of prospects that I've seen a long time. Joel,
great season, great job, awesome analysis. Really appreciate you join
us on Fox Sports Radio. I appreciate you, man, I
love it, and we'll be on hopefully soon. That's great
stuff from Joel Clatt. Let's get you to Steve this, Steger.
Find out what else breaking news in the nash Football League. Steve,
what is it? Yeah? That what we mentioned earlier, the

(32:44):
coaching higher that's apparently coming at Arizona. That Cliff Kingsbury,
according to our Peter Schreger, is finalizing a deal to
become the Cardinals new head coach. Kingsbury, X of Texas Tech,
was just let go by the Red Raiders in November,
hired last month as a U SEE assistant, but met
with the Jets last night in Arizona. Today he's got
a new job. The Browns had a second interview with

(33:05):
Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski for Cleveland's head coach Vacancy.
NFL Network says Freddie Kitchens, the Brown Zone offensive coordinator,
is the other finalists and Ian rappid Boord. NFL Network
says the Bucks will likely start negotiating with Bruce Arians
soon to be their new head coach, also reporting that
Todd Bowles is top choice for defensive coordinator at Tampa Bay.

(33:26):
The NFL playoffs resume on Saturday. Last night's national title
game in college football got a fourteen point six rating
for ESPN lois for a final in seven years when
there was an Alabama l s U rematch in the NBA. Tonight, Denver,
first in the Western Conference, a game ahead of the Warriors,
is playing at Miami tonight. Golden State is home to

just fighting it, fighting it down. Doug gotlip show you

fighting the code. By the way, the Rockets head coach
Mike D'Antoni spoke today said they're gonna be very careful

(35:57):
with Chris Paul. I don't want to bring him back
to early. It'll still be around two to three weeks
until he returns to the team. From that hand, bubble wrap,
bubble wrap, Let's get to our game time, John, What
do we rank? Rank them? I'll give you items and you,
as the title would indicate, rank them in order. For example,
thank you now that Dabbo Sweeney has won two national

(36:20):
titles in college football. Rank the current top five coaches
in college football, including of course Dabo Sweetie and Nick Saban,
but Lincoln Riley and Brian Kelly were also in the
final four of football. Add Jim Harbaugh on your list,
Kirby Smart, Chris Peterson, and others. Top five coaches in
college football. We're talking all around, Like I said, like,

(36:42):
when you say coaching in college football, it's not in
game coaching, right, Yeah, that includes coaching the game, yes,
all of it, and it includes it, but it also
includes all the ancillary things. I'll go Dabbo one, Saban two,
Hardball three. Uh yeah, I'll go Jimbo full and Lincoln Riley.

(37:03):
Lincoln Riley. That includes defense, you know, the all around
coaching thing. Okay, Okay, So not the Penn State coach,
Notre Dame, Nope, item too. Look, I think James Franklin
is amazing recruiter. I think he's a good coach, a
good motivator. We've also seen him in a couple of
big moments make what I think is poor coaching decisions

(37:24):
or whoever called the plays making poor coaching decisions. Um,
I think he's good. Like to be mentioned on this
list is a pretty and there's no affront to have
mentioned on this list. I just I mean, I think
most people would take Lincoln Riley. I would take hardball
ahead of him, uh, considering hardballs, you know, built in
one everywhere he's been. Although you could say the same
thing about Franklin when he did a Vanderbilt UM Jimbo
obviously one national title. The reason he got Chris Peterson's

(37:46):
a great coach. I don't know if all the other
parts of their program, like, um, you know, are they
willing to recruit at the level that's going to take
to compete nationally. But great coach, super smart guy. I
think Kirby smarts outstanding too. So you have him Harbor
number three, Michigan by the way down to number fourteen
and the final ap pole today, oddly Clemson was they
didn't have you know, they had what four defense for

(38:08):
the for the best players set out defensively, um, and
that was gonna win the bull game and what they did,
so it's it's really really hard. Did they were their
disaster against Ohio State, Yeah, yeah, but they also went
to beat Penn State. They also went peat Michigan State.
I thought they improved this season went on and from
where they were when they took over to now has

(38:28):
been a dramatic improvement. Now we'll see if they can
take the next up. Coach news for the NFL now
the Packers, Cardinals, and Bucks jobs reportedly are filled. Nothing
official on all of those, but rank the remaining head
coach openings in the NFL. The Browns seemed to be
getting close. Jets and Broncos have openings, Miami Dolphins, Cincinnati
Bengals as well. Browns. I'm gonna do Jets as number one.

(38:56):
I'll tell you why. They have their quarterback. They got
a ton of cap room, and there's low expectations. Okay,
I'm gonna put the Bengals at two. And you might
say Bengals why they don't know if the who their
quarterback is gonna be? Yeah, but Marvin Lewis got sixteen
years to figure it out. Okay. Three the Browns. I
think they have the best talent of any of these teams,
and they have their quarterback. The problem is their quarterback

(39:17):
is kind of empowered and he's like a cult hero
now right, So if whoever comes into the head coach
screws it up. Uh, you're gonna be the one that
takes the fall. And they've gone through six coaches in
the last ten years. Ten years. Um, I'll put the
Dolphins at four. UM. I think they have an owner
who wants to do the right thing. They have to
figure out their quarterback situation, and they're in the division,

(39:39):
which Uh it feels like the Jets have figured it
out and they still had the Patriots for now, and
then the Broncos. I mean, they're cycling through coaches and
they don't have a quarterback and they got John Lay
who has to get it right and hasn't gotten the
right at head coach. That those are my one through five.
So Matt la Floor taking Cliff Kingsbury. It seems Bruce
area and it seems now expected to be off the market.

(40:00):
Josh McDaniels, the Pat's offensive coordinator remaining in New England,
now rank the top five head coach candidates that are
out down and now the Browns offensive coordinator, Freddy Kinchin's
is said to be a finalist for the Cleveland job.
Mike McCarthy is interviewed elsewhere. Chris Rohard Dallas is a possibility.
Eric B. Enemy, offensive coordinator of the Chiefs get mentioned

(40:21):
candidates Top five head coaching candidates. Um, well, I think
I think Kitchens is going to get the Browns job,
So I'd be if I if I was cheating, I
would put him number one. I'm gonna put Brian Flores
at one. What they've been able to do with that
Patriots defense the past couple of years, considering a lack
of talent is remarkable. I've been told, like of the

(40:42):
guys coming out of New England, that's the guy they
believe can really can legitimately get it done. I like
Chris Richard and what he's done in Dallas and what
he did, and I'm excuse me, Christoph Shard and what
he's done in Dallas, what he did in Seattle. Eric B. Enemy,
I loved him as a player, and I love the
idea of him. He's not calling plays, so it does
feel like he's kind of getting caught up in the Hey,

(41:04):
Pat Mahomes is awesome and Andy Reid's offense is awesome,
so let's hire somebody close to it. Um Ever, Flus
has done a good job. Fangio is awesome, but Fangio
is just a curmudgeon. He's just a tough guy to love.
But he's a really good coach, a really good defensive coach,
but a tough guy to like, tough guy to love.
It's gonna depend on his office corner. And I like
everybody likes Gaze. Everybody likes it. And they weren't terrible

(41:27):
in Miami in spite of the fact that they didn't
have a quarterback who is healthy. Um I put Gaze
at three. I put McCarthy at four. I would put
Kitchens at five, Ever Blues at six, Fangio at seven,
and the Enemy at eight. This is game time on
the Doug Gottlieb Show. King's very in the floor too,

Doug got Lip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, we
can react to last night. I would I would claim
that I accurately predicted Clemson would win the national title. No,
no, no no, I did predict Clemson we win the national title.
I said straight up. I said kicking game would be

(43:56):
kind of the one big determining factor. It was a
determining factor. But the better determining factor was Clemson was
actually better than Alabama. That was a big determining factor.
They were better coach or quarterback play was better. I
thought their tackling was better. Their wide receivers made some
unbelievable grabs, They play with great energy, and I thought
they were just better upfront. Um, but it's great, Like, look,

(44:19):
this is good. This is that sports man. You show
up and you're out of Abama and your six point
favorites or five and a half or six and a
half depending on where you got it, and you get whooped.
It's awesome, awesome, But we need to like on, Trevor
Lawrence should go pro now be able to go pro.

(44:40):
Now they're gonna win three straight national titles with Trevor Lawrence, Like,
it just doesn't ever work that way. It might, but
history would tell you it doesn't work that way, right,
even to a who didn't play last year until the
second half of the National Championship Game and want it
in overtimes, like oh to A'm gonna win the Heisman Trophy,

(45:05):
gonna be the top pick in the NFL draft, Like, well,
he had the Heisman Trophy one until they played Georgia
and then he didn't. And oh yeah, by the way,
did he even look like the best quarterback on the
field last night? But that doesn't mean his career ends.
Can he fix the bliz blitz pick pickups that he
was lacking? Can he shore up those holes? Be fascinating

(45:27):
to say, you've got the time will tell Just like
remember the Chicago Cubs, We're gonna start a dynasty when
they finally broke the curse of the Billy Goat. Yeah,
it wasn't much of a dynasty. Oh and the Seahawks
were gonna win multiple titles and or the Jacksonville Jaguars
last year, right a f C championship game, knocking on
the door. Next year, kick it in. That was Bum Phillips.

(45:50):
Wade Phillips, who's the defensive coordinator for the Rams. His dad,
Bum Phillips, was the head coach of the Houston Oilers.
And the Oilers I don't know if they've never been
in the playoffs before. In the in since they joined
the NFL, they were an old AFL team, and the
famous line was bum Philips. They lost in the playoffs.
It's like, hey, this year we knocked in the door.
Next year we're gonna kick it in. They didn't even

(46:11):
get up the walkway the following year. It's just not
the way sports works. All right, Let's dig in on
the two hires. Matt la Fleur, which sounds like a
hockey goalie's name more than a head coach of the
Green Bay Packers, right, Matt Lafleur is the new head
coach the Green Bay Packers. And if you're just joining us,

(46:32):
Cliff Kingsbury is going to be the new head coach
of the Arizona Cardinals. Both of these hires are gonna
make NFL people spin on their heads. I can't bat
the floor now. Matt Lafleur is young dude, former quarterback.
My My favorite part of my research in discovering Matt

(46:53):
Lafleur was he was once the quarterback of the Omaha Beef.
I love that Matt la Fleu quarterback for the Omaha Beef.
You two can like beef for dinner if you just
go order Omaha steaks, right, Like, that's the easiest sail ever. Beef.
How how was what was the Jared? Uh? What's the

(47:17):
guy who was the quarterback of Kentucky Jared Lorenzen? How
is Jared Lorenzen not the quarterback of the Omaha Beef.
That's the easiest sail ever. Listen. I know he can't
move and he's three pounds and he's fighting he's fighting
diabetes because he's had this terrible weight game problem. And
of course he's come out and talked about all the
issues he's had. But I mean, look at him. If
that's not the quarterback for the Omaha Beef, I don't

(47:39):
know what is. Anyway. I love the idea that this
is a lot like whether it's Kirk Cousins or anybody
who's signed off the free agent market. Signed off the
free agent market. What happens immediately after they're hired is

(48:02):
the pushback of I can't believe you hired Matt Lafleur.
He was coordinator for the Tennessee Titans, and their offense
was ranked between twenty and thirty second, and everything they
did should be pointed out that no one knows that
Marcus Mariota is any good. Should also be pointing out
that team is built to run the football, and oh yeah,
by the way, Mariotta was hurt part of the year

(48:23):
and they were one game away from making the playoffs.
And while being an understudy to Kyle Shanahan and understudy
to Sean McVeigh doesn't automatically grant you an interview or
head coaching status. Let's also point out that Frank Reich
has done a magnificent job. Has he done a great job?
Anybody with the Colts done a great job. He doesn't

(48:46):
coach defense, and he didn't call plays last year with
the Philadelphia Eagles, right, And by the way, the Philadelphi
Eagles their head coach, are you familiar with his story?
Former backup quarterback to Brett Farve and the Green Bay
Packers comes over to the Eagles from the Kansi Chiefs.
Do you know what he didn't do with the Kansei Chiefs,

(49:09):
that's right, didn't call plays. Matt nagi Uh, Matt Knack,
Matt Nagie could have been the coach. And I don't
know if this has been reported. Okay, Chris Ballard's the
GM of the Indian Indianapolis Colts. Right. Matt Nagie was
actually the first choice of Chris Ballard because they worked

(49:29):
together in Kansas City and their sons were in the
same AU team and they are best friends. They are
very close friends. Matt Nagie chose to Chicago Barris instead.
One reason was he didn't know about Andrew Luck and
he felt great about they all like Mitch Drabinsky when
they evaluated him coming out of college. So he took

(49:49):
But you know what Matt Nagee didn't do in Kansas
City didn't call plays. So this idea that you're like, well,
you have to have had some sort of success as
a head coach. If you had success as a head coach,
you'd probably be wait for a head coach in the NFL. Right,
And the only guy who has been a success as

(50:10):
a head coach. Who's out there are two guys maybe
who's out there on the market. One is Jim Callwell's fine,
you know, he's fine with Detroit. Fine, he's fine with Indie.
But everyone in Indie gives credit more to you know,
the sheriff who was the quarterback. Jim Calwell is utterly

(50:31):
unoffensive but not exactly inspiring. And Mike McCarthy somehow wore
out his welcome in Green Bay and couldn't get along
with Aaron Rodgers. And their offense was seen as stull.
This as as dull and lame and stagnant. All right,
So but the league is about offense, like, well, all

(50:53):
these guys looking for yeah, because offense has determined the
entire league. That can see, Chiefs have the worst defense
anyone's ever seen. What's their seed this weekend? That would
be the number one seed? Right? Hey? Uh? The Baltimore
Raven who did a great job putting together some form

(51:15):
of running game in order to get them to the playoffs.
How they do in the playoffs? Look the league, the league,
both all leagues have trended this way. They're all trying
to figure out a way to score more points because
that's what Americans want like, Look, there's a lot of
reasons we don't like soccer, but the number one reason
is we just can't watch something where they score one
time in a game and fight our or or none

(51:37):
and just ends and then dude switch jerseys, like here,
you take my jersey and I'll take yours. Sure we
like the hitting, we like the manhood of it. But
everything in football has grown because of scoring points, fantasy football, gambling,
on football, viewership. It's all up, why score more points?

(52:02):
And if the way to get more people to watch
your games and the way to win games is both
with offense, why should you go and find the best
offensive guys and then you find somebody to coach the defense. Sean, myboy,
don't coach defense. No. When he got the job, he said,
did something really smart here, I'm the youngest head coach
in league. Let me hire the oldest defens according in

(52:24):
the league who is really well respected. And I don't
even know if if Wade Phillips is that great. He lovable.
Teams seem to figure out what he does by about
mid season and it becomes fallible. But this idea that
Kingsbury won't work because they didn't win a bunch of
Texas Tech. There's no similarity at all between coaching Josh

(52:46):
Rosen and coaching at Texas Tech. Coaching in college football
you have to manage hiring a staff and you're like, well,
who do you hire? Yeah, but you've got to get
people to move to Lubbock, Texas. And then you have
a budget. But you gotta get people to move to Lubbock, Texas.
Then you gotta recruit players that love like Texas. And

(53:09):
while you could sit there and go like, hey, it's
the Big Twelve, it's not exactly garden spots, that's true,
but Baylor is an hour from Dallas. That's where the
players are. TCU is in Fort Worth, That's where the
players are. Yeah, I'm and like, look, no unless you
I went to Oklahoma State. So I'm fully I'm very

(53:29):
well aware. There is maybe five percent. It used to
be no one in Oklahoma was born and raised, woke
up and said, man, I can't wait to go to
Oklahoma State and play football. It didn't happen. People would
have been Oklahoma State basketball fans, but never no Oklahoma
State football fan. You won't you so, unless, of course

(53:52):
your parents were Okluma state aluves. That's it. And that's
the same thing with Texas Tech. Unless you're from Lubbock,
you're from West Texas and you don't want to away
from home. Do you know how how hard that job is?
And you could sit there and tell me that a listen,
um uh, Mike Leach one there. When Mike Leach one there,

(54:12):
the league was different. Baylor was crumby, TCU wasn't in
the league. It was a completely different league. And Mike
Leach is a really good college football coach who would
probably be a good NFL head coach. Probably would, but
it might be a little bit too off, maybe a
little bit too smart, a little bit too sarcastic. The

(54:37):
job of a head coach is to coach what they
know and hire people to coach what they don't, and
then to lead men. That's it. Those are the two jobs.
You know. You can be contankerous with the media. Nobody cares.
Don't believe me, Bill Belichick, it doesn't mean it doesn't
help if you're and you could get a little bit

(54:59):
like Sean mcgah is. He comes across as great, But
listen to Sean mcveigh's bites. They're all exactly the same.
He's a robot with the media. He's not giving you anything.
The job of a college football coach is the recruit
to manage the egos of the donors. Oh yeah, by
the way, you got parents to worry about as well
as their handlers. And then you got academics, and then

(55:21):
you have your staff, and then you have your training staff.
You have the n c A double a rule book.
You're working for somebody in the athletic department and working
for a president who may or may not have hired you.
You gotta raise money for the school. You got you.
You have to represent the school in a bunch of
different ways. And oh yeah, by the way, on Saturdays

(55:42):
occasionally on Thursdays, you gotta win football games. It's like
the gig in the NFL. It's coaching what you know
and then finding somebody else to coach what you don't.
And then you gotta lead men, gotta lead min and

(56:03):
it really helps if you have a really good quarterback.

you you kind of mentioned they're Doug. I mean you
haven't done that. You have a real study on these

(57:31):
because you know they're they're so far away, but you're
casually paying attention and you see what you see on
television and fun with Bucky about today. The interesting thing
on toa is man, you know when they've had uh,
you know, stepped up in competition. We saw the first
opportunity you had, even though it was football, played great,
but then you look at the next the two best
teams they've played. You know, you factor in the conference

(57:54):
championship game or do not play well, and then you
factor in this game right here where he was just okay.
So yeah, I mean, look, it's probably things him a
little bit early on in the process, but you've got
so much more football left to play before his evaluations
even anywhere close. And then the other kid is I
got ca't to see him at the at the opening

(58:15):
camp up at Nike is a high schooler and he's
he is impressive. You just he's exactly what you want
your quarterback to look like from a stature standpoint. Big
strong arm, you can move around poise, confident, and uh,
that was a clinic. I mean it was very reminiscent
of of watching Shawn Watson kind of carved up that
decency did the same thing. I I said this, and

(58:35):
you tell me if I'm wrong. I feel like, uh,
And and some of this is from talking to college
coaches where they're like, look, college coaching, actual coaching, right, Like,
there's recruiting, there's there's donors, there's the president, there's the
a D. There's managing academics and everything else that you
have to do. And Saban is the best at all

(58:57):
of those things. And as a coach, he's really good,
but he so empowers assistance and like, look, you know,
I don't think this staff is as good as they've been,
and some of the players might not be as dominant.
So they ran up on a team with similar and
maybe in some places superior talent, and actual game coaching
kind of got exposed. Is that Is that a fair

(59:18):
Is that a fair way to to to to point
out that Saving can be a great coach and not
be the greatest game coach in the history of the sport. Yeah,
I still think that Saving is I still think he
is the best game coach. I think he's the best,
you know, in terms of the whole operation, I think
he is the best. I think it has more to
do with what's underneath him and the cotton, the lack

(59:38):
of continuity and constant turn over there. Uh, not only
you know, you're having players leaving each and every year,
but so many coaches they've lost. I think that's what
showed up more than anything else. And you know, it's
just like anything else you go through. You know, they
went through, you know, having an A level coach and
then maybe you get to the B plus level coach
after the A level coach leaves and they've lost so

(59:59):
many guys. Now think some of these coaches on the
staff are really, to be honest, with B minus C
plus type coaches with A plus players. And I think
they played a team with the same level of talent,
very similar, if not a little bit better. And I
just thought that the gap in the in the coaching,
specifically the coordinators, what was what the difference was. But um,
you know, Saban can't, he can't coach every time. I

(01:00:19):
still think he's the best. I'm gonna ask the question,
like I get that. People in the d m V
like Mike Loxley, but he was a train It was
a train wreck as a coach in New Mexico. And
if Bob Davy came in there and one right after that,
right after that, okay, now, and he and he had
some other some other issues, not just in terms of coaching,
but okay, Like, I mean, there's been NFL coach that

(01:00:39):
have had bad runs, but they were a train wreck.
But they got exposed last night, I mean badly, badly exposed. Well,
here's the here's the bigger thing, Doug, Like, let's look
at this thing going forward. And I posed this question
a little bit earlier today, but you wanted to talking
about it. Any five star kid that has their choice
of school, okay, and you go, Okay, either play Alabama Clempson,

(01:01:00):
We're gonna win huge. But what's the experience of Gosh,
it looks like a lot more enjoyable experience to go
spend three or four years with Dabbo. It just looks
why why would you choose to go to Alabama when
you can get all the winning, all the development um,
take care of your future, to get ready for the NFL.
And it just looks like a heck of a lot
more fun. I think it's a lot like the Kentucky thing,
you know, and that you do. You do think you're Alabama.

(01:01:22):
You're going to the league and they can only take
you know, twenty some odd guys a year. So um,
some of it is location based as well. But I
don't know, give me, give me fascinate you see. Daniel
Jeremiah joins us on the Doug Otlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. UM. I started the season with the premise
that Lamar Jackson just wasn't accurate enough and didn't have, uh,

(01:01:43):
the ability to decipher defense is well enough to be
a starting quarterback long term in the NFL. They made
it work with you know, that zone read and some
triple option. But the second time you see it, we've
seen it from other others that have run a similar style.
People figure it out now having seen him twice. What's
your thoughts in the long term future, Lamar Jackson. UM,

(01:02:06):
I would say this, I think that that's the team
playing that style, that it's gonna win eight nine games
every year. But man, it feels like they have a
hard feeling on top of their head. Um, you know,
trying to play like that. It's just I don't see
how you're gonna get moments in games or you've got
to be able to sit in there and make some throws. Um,
And that's not something that he's really comfortable doing. And

(01:02:27):
I don't know, you know, he's gonna get better, I
have no doubt. I don't know if he's ever gonna
ride at the level where you're gonna make those types
of throws. So um. You know the thing that was
baffling to me, I thought the Chargers just coached circles
around him. You know. You know, everybody talks about Doug
Gus Bradley with the seven dbs, the four safeties, all that,
But when I watched the tape, you know how many
times they ran quarterback counter or just quarterback lead. The

(01:02:51):
whole point of having an athlete of quarterback because you
pick up an extra blocker, but they just kept brunning
his own reads. So you're trying to influence the end
instead of blocking him. Used to running back to block
Cam and you've got a number of the advantage and
let Lamar run. I don't think that sustainable long term,
but I thought they could have been more competitive in
that football game if they were to use their running
back to block a little bit instead of influence, because
the Chargers just ate that up. That said, their defense

(01:03:13):
was incredibly impressive, Like, what what's gonna be lost? Now?
That defense is putting bad situation after bad situation. Uh,
even when they had you know, they gave up field
position on special teams, some some great returns from the
from the Chargers as well, like I walk away going man,
that defense might be the best in the league. Yeah, no,
it was. I thought there were two impressive defenses on
display there. They have to fight for every against the

(01:03:33):
Ravens group, and I just thought Chargers when you when
you can get Ingram and boasts on NFL guards, I
mean the Ravens get exposed, but just about any guard
in the league when they get in that situation wherever
they were able to fan those guys out, fan the
tackles out and have space with guards. I don't know
too many guards in the NFL are blocking those two guys.
That's the voice of Daniel Jeremiah who joins us in
the Doug Got Leap Show. Okay, so with that in mind,

(01:03:55):
I know this it feels a little bit like now
they have continuity of the staff, so they're really well coached.
But sometimes it is Jimmy's and Joe's and not xs
and os. And I look at the Chargers and like,
I like, I mean, Melvin Ingram was a was a
beast on Sunday right, he got Joey Derwin James is
a freak. Um. And then you add Hunter Henry Melvin

(01:04:17):
Gordon playing through injury. Okay, Tom Brady has been a
historically incredible quarterback. Don't the Chargers just have substantially better
talent on the football team. They do. I don't think
you find anybody in the the NFL would disagree with you there.
And look at position groups across the board, Um, I
think the Chargers have have a pretty good advantage. To
look at the wide receivers, the collection, the depth of

(01:04:38):
wide receiving talent the Chargers have, um. And if you
have to factor in Cronk, you know what, Gronk, We're
gonna see that when we saw the majority of year
didn't look healthy and was kind of clunky and struggling
to move around. Now it's just rest help him and
maybe we see a little different version of Gronk. We
will have to wait and see what that looks like.
But defensive talent terms of just some superstars, um that

(01:04:59):
Chargers have that. Well, but I was talking to a
coach in the division that that plays against Belichick every year,
and he said, look, the challenge is with them, what
you see on tape, you do not know what you're
gonna get to start the game. They will come out
in a very specific game plan as everyone talks about defensively,
and most teams don't have the combination of quarterback and
coordinator to kind of put that Rubiks cube together in

(01:05:21):
time to win a football game. That's where I think
the Chargers have an advantage with the veteran quarterback and
Rivers and a really really good offensive coordinator in Kent
Wasn't Hunt. All right, Let's get to some of the
other games. There's a lot of people being critical of
Brian Schottenheimer and the Seattle Seahawks for their game plan
or maybe lack of adjustment to the game plan. You
watch tape, you break it down. What are your thoughts
on the Seahawks and their struggles against that talented Cowboys defense. Well, look,

(01:05:45):
I understand that they were in the game and they
had played a certain style the whole season which put
him in that position. They have an offensive line not
built to pass protect. So I get all the arguments
for for sticking with it the way that they did,
even though they weren't getting yards in the run game.
But I just thought, man with with Russell Wilson at
this point in time. I think it was smart to
preserve him with that style of play to get to

(01:06:07):
this point in time. But I thought they could have
afforded to to be a little bit more reckless with
him and cut him once, a little bit to him
on the move, and be more aggressive with him than
they were. So that was my only complaint. Uh, what
about the Cowboys? There are some saying, Wow, like das
a winner. He's a winner. Um, he made a couple
of good throws, made some errant throws. What's your analysis

(01:06:27):
of Dak Prescott and his play? I'm tell him Bucky this. Uh.
You know one thing about Dax. I like him because
I have so much respect for his toughness. I've had
his one tough dude, did you see it? With his
competitiveness when he takes off and runs, He's never gonna
be pinpoint accurate. That's not who he is. But you
can tell this team's kind of taken on a little

(01:06:48):
bit of that identity. They're a defensive team with a rugged,
tough quarterback. Um that it's gonna find a way to
make a couple of plays. They're not they're not equipped
to win in a shootout. If they find themselves and
the shoot out, they're gonna lose. But their defense keeps
him in games. I think he just finds a way
to make a couple of plays here and there. Um,
they're gonna be a tough out. They just they have
to win a very specific way with the way they're built.

(01:07:08):
Doug Gotlib show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, many
people thought Deshaun Watson was going to be the next
in card, the next that's what the next next generation
of quarterback looks like. He struggled a lot against a
really good defense, but struggled. What's your assessment of how
we really should view Deshaun Watson. I think he's I
think he's still got room to grow. I'm actually I'm

(01:07:31):
pretty excited about what he's gotten fun what he can
do going forward. I just think they are atrocious. I mean,
that's that is that might be if it's not the
worst offensive line in the NFL past. Protection wise, it's
one of the three worst. And I know the sacks
were way up there. Sometimes people put that sum on Watson,
but man, individually, Doug, they're awful up front, awful. Uh.

(01:07:51):
They have got to invest there to help him out
a little bit. So it wasn't his best effort, but man,
it is that is a tall ask to ask him
to stand behind that group. Okay, so what about the
Colts who have a have a talented defense, how does
that defense match up with the Kansas City Chiefs offense? Uh,
you know, look, there's no answer for Tyreek Hill start there.

(01:08:11):
Nobody has anybody with that dude can control him. They're
gonna give up points to me. You know, their speed
in their front seven, They've got to find a way.
I think you're gonna see them. To me, it's you've
got nothing to lose. You just got to try and
generate some turnovers and steal a couple of possessions. I
do think the Colts offense will move it up and
down the field of score a bunch. So I looked
Darius Leonard had seven sacks this year. I would cut

(01:08:34):
him loose as a blitzer, I would play ultra aggressive.
If you're gonna give up big plays, that's okay, you
live with that. Uh. To me, they're gonna play aggressive
and just go and see if they steal a possession
or two. And I think they're equipped to do that.
I actually think they go in there and get a win. Okay,
what about the Rams and the Cowboys? Again, man at styles.
When you look at styles, I think the Cowboys are

(01:08:56):
equipped to go get that win. I mean because the
run backs, because their linebackers can run with Gurley, right,
I mean, that's that's that's so you have to have
speed with Todd Gurley. You have to have speed inside
out so when those runs get to the primer, you're
not You're not gonna be able to just be a
forced player to make that play on the edge with
your Your end is not gonna be able to keep
him in there. Your corners are gonna have a challenge

(01:09:17):
because they like to pull those linemen outside. So you
need to have speed inside out to close that space
and go make plays on the perimeter. And I don't
know who's better equipped in the Cowboys with those two
dudes to make that happen. No, it's it's pretty pretty
amazing to watch, all right, last one Eagles. Um, Eagles
get one last great drive against a really good, really
good Bears defense and get a little bit of luck

(01:09:38):
from the gods with that that tip football and the
missed field goal. Uh. People are saying as something about
folds magic. Does the magic run out when they go
to New Orleans? And I think it does. Uh, you know,
I'm a Look, I have so much respect for that
organization and that Peterson and the way Folds is performing
the postseason. I just think they're getting ready to run
into a bus saw, you know, coming off of a

(01:09:59):
bye and now building. Uh, that is a tough, tough one.
And the secondary, I thought, look, they've played better, they've
gotten better, they're communicating better for the Eagles. But still
even when you watch that tape, there's some space out
there that Mitchell Risky couldn't find. I think Drew Brees
will have no issue finding it. Last thing we've made.
We have two big coaching highers so far. Matt Lafleur,

(01:10:20):
who if he's got the he's got the double bump,
right like if you know well, if you know Sean
McVeigh and he's worked for Sean McVeigh um and also
with Kyle Shanahan the year before that. Right, So if
you know Shannahan, you know McVeigh. He's worked for both
of them and he's been a coordinator, although their offense
wasn't explosive this year. How does he match up with

(01:10:40):
Aaron Rodgers. I actually was talking with with an offensive
line coaching NFL earlier today and uh, I said, what
do you think? What do you think it is? Higher? Okay?
He said, He's all. He's all, you might think I'm crazy.
You said, I think this is a home run, and
I go, really, he goes, he's gonna run the Shanahan
system with Aaron Rodgers. And just think about the success
under Kyle Shanahan that Matt Ryan had and now you're

(01:11:02):
with an infinitely better version of Matt Ryan. He said.
He said, Aaron Rodgers gonna love this dude, and they're
gonna put up some serious points. So that's just that's
just one opinion from talking to somebody inside the league.
I'm fascinated by it. I Mean, he's young, no doubt,
but that's that's the way the league's headed, all right,
what about Kingsbury. Kingsbury, you know, people point out they
couldn't win with with Pat Mahomes, but they did average

(01:11:23):
forty four a game with Pat Mahomes. Problem was they
gave up forty four a game with Pat Mahomes. Well,
Kingsbury work in Arizona, that's one that's intriguing to me.
Um My thing was with Mahomes a great job of
identifying and recruiting him and bring him in there, and
they were productive. But I mean, I thought Mahomes made
so many strides with Andy Reid in his time there

(01:11:46):
in terms of just mechanically decision making. I thought he
had made drastic improvements. So I don't know. It seems
like on one hand, we're given a guy at a credit,
but you and I have talked about this. He wasn't
really refined his footworkers bad. He took a lot of chances.
On the other hand, like your ability to work with
a guy and get guys to lock in, they're not professionals.

(01:12:06):
I mean some of that is on Mahomes and the
college system where you're not coaching. You're not able to
coach a guy three sixty five days a year the
way you are Rosen. Yeah, I mean to me, well,
you know, look, he's got to go the heck of
his staff and I I'll be curious to see who
he gets to come with them with With McVeigh and
everybody talks about the fact they had a Wade Phillips
there to take care of the defense, He's got to

(01:12:27):
find a veteran guy on the defensive side of the ball,
and he better gets some morningfol experience in terms of
his offensive staff. It's gonna be interesting, all right, man, listen,
great job covering the Bolts game. I listened to the
I listened to the radio call with you and Money Smith.
I thought you were great. I felt like I knew
a ton more about what was going on. Keep it up,
say travels to Boston. We'll talk to you soon. You're

(01:12:47):
the best. Take care. But Daniel Jeremiah moved the sticks
to the podcast. NFL Network is where he works as
well as covering the Chargers for a living. Let's get
you to Steve the Sager. Lots of stuff going on
in the world of sports. Steve updates. Well, it's great
that he's a regular guest on the show. One of
the most reliable, knowledgeable NFL people, and you're right the broadcast.
He's very good predictably on that, of course. Big news
afternoons from the NFL is Cliff Kingsbury finalizing a deal

(01:13:10):
to become new head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. He
had just been hired as a USC assistant last month. Now,
rival says USC's new running backs coach Mike Jinks, who
was hand picked by Kingsbury, is likely headed to the
Cardinal staff as well. Kingsbury had coach both Baker Mayfield
and Patrick Mahomes in college, and was an offensive coordinator
for case Keenum and Johnny Manzel in college. The Bucks

(01:13:32):
will likely start negotiating with Bruce Arians soon. According to
NFL Network, Green Bay formally agreed to a four year
deal with Matt Lafleur to be the Packers new head coach.
Texas wide receiver a little Jordan Humphrey declared for the
NFL Draft. He's not that little. Six NFL playoffs resumed Saturday.
The Colts will play at top seed in Kansas City.
Chiefs wide receiver Sammy Watkins is expected to practice today.

(01:13:55):
You've been out since November with a foot injury. The
Eagles are going to be playing on Fox TV Sunday
four or forty Eastern time at top seeded New Orleans.
In November, Philadelphia lost seven at New Orleans. Carson Wentz

Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Oh, Philip
Lindsay's joined us next hour amazing. Do you guys know
Philip lindsay story? Philip Lindsay, I believe the story goes
We'll let him tell it. Uh. He grew up in Aurora,
went to high school in Denver and towards a c

(01:16:23):
L I think before during his senior year in high school,
and so I don't know if he had a scholarship
or scholarships pulled. And then he goes to see you,
but he originally committed to see you with a different coach.
They switched coaches anyway. Read Church's first year, becomes a
star in his junior and senior year, then goes undrafted
by everybody in the league. Broncos signed him as an

(01:16:45):
undrafted free agent. I want to know how he picked
the Broncos right, because it's one thing I talked to
a bunch of people about this where they're like, ah,
like Austin Ekeler. I talked to the Charges about this, like, oh,
Austin Neckler, what a fine? Like yeah, actually, we had
seven chances to draft him and didn't draft him. You
could have spent nothing to get a seventh round draft pick,
like we were dumb enough to miss on him three

(01:17:06):
or four times over got him as an undrafted free agent.
Has become a stud for us. So the Broncos are
getting credit, but they I think they had ten draft
picks last year and didn't take him. They took two
other running backs. Nonetheless, great story. He's gonna join us
next hour. So to his Brady Quinn of course analyze
both the NFL and college football get his thoughts on
what we saw last night and now every day. This

(01:17:30):
time the Doug got Leaves Show, We played for you
h a show previously on Fox Sports Won or Fox
Sports tradeo call it what did the Fox say? Here's
Clay Travis on last night in college football. I think
that this result, not just at Alabama loss, but that
the way they lost is the best thing that could
happen to college football because one, it's now a legitimate

(01:17:51):
battle royale between Dabo Sweeney and Nick Saban, and so
much of college football is about the coach is because
the players are here and gone so quickly that what
what kind of lingers is the tension, whether or not
it's real or just perceived between top coaches. And certainly,

(01:18:13):
the best I would say rivalry that existed from the
coaching perspective in college football, even though they didn't play
a ton of times, was Alabama and Nick Saban against
Urban Meyer in Ohio State. You needed that person to
step up onto the pedestal and compete with Alabama. I agree,
but I agree for a completely different reason. Yes, you

(01:18:34):
want two superpowers. But like he said, it's always been
about the coaches because the players usually come and go.
And Clemson's losing a lot, but you know who comes back,
Trevor Lawrence for two more years and two of for
at least one more year, and then to his brothers
might be the quarterback afterwards. So it's one thing to
have the a Clemson the rubber Mats. You know, they
both won two titles in the last four years. It's

(01:18:55):
a whole thing to have the same quarterbacks, the two
quarterbacks who have won the last two and then every
one else trying to unseek them. I do think that
even though the ratings were bad and it becomes very
much a Southeastern Southern sport, the idea that you're gonna
know who, that you're not gonna just know the coach,
you're gonna know the quarterbacks for both of these teams
next year cannot be undersold as a good night for

(01:19:17):
college football. Which brings me to why I've heard people say, hey,
man sucks, Trevor Lawrence should be able to play in
the NFL. There's it's an American, an American that anybody
you know he's ready to play, you should play. Okay,
there's a couple of things here. First of all, it's
not an American. It's actually the most American thing there is.

(01:19:40):
Do you know why, Because it's collectively bargained upon between
the players and the player association in the NFL. That's
what they come up with. Has nothing to do with
the n c A. This is bargained upon. They went
to a bargaining table, they sat down with the union
and the ownership and this is what the rule has been.
And by the way, it's a smart rule for nine
percent of guys and could Trevor parents come out and
play shut. Do you think he's ready? Of course he's not.

(01:20:03):
Of course he's not. It's been in a college campus
for less than a year. Came last year in the winter,
or maybe one year it's been there. Um. What what
it does is it weeds out the one hit wonders
right it It also we figure out if Trevor Lawrence
is what he says that he is and I think
that he is, which is like, look, he says what

(01:20:24):
powers him is his faith. We'll find out. He'll have
plenty of temptation in Clemson, South Carolina, plenty of temptation,
not just in terms of ladies, but how much does
he pay attention to continue to improve and hone his
craft over the next two years. You'll see it because
people are gonna pick apart his weaknesses. The same thing

(01:20:46):
with Tuah. Look at how one season of starting and
by the end of the year we're like, wow, maybe
Ta isn't the greatest quarterback that's ever played football in
college football. But you get time, get time to mature
as a person, high mature as a player, and oh yeah,
by the way, you get to promote yourself and all
that we're gonna do. But for the next for the
next twelve months is promote those two guys more so

(01:21:10):
than Saban and Dabbo. It's to Uh versus Trevor Part
two and they're gonna benefit from that, and so is
the NFL promoting their product. We promote the players and
teach you who these guys are. I think the three
and out system is the is the best way. That's

(01:21:31):
one reason for the health of the league. You know
who these guys are in college, and you know who
they are when they become NFL players. Doug Otleep Show

in all of football is that of Philip Lindsay. He
grows up in Denver, goes to see you. I remember
see you, played in a Rose Bowl, rushes for over
a thousand yards is last two years, goes undrafted. Broncos
sign him as an undrafted free agent. He ends up
starting his last eight games, doesn't finish the season because

(01:22:13):
he heard his risk against the Raiders in Week sixteen.
He's the first undrafted rookie to ever make a Pro
Bowl ever Ever, and guess what he's our guest upcoming

to react to. Cliff Kingsbury are to Texas Tech. Hired
at USC as offensive coordinator, and he did not lose
a single game as offensive quiting of USC. That's because
he did not coach a single game as offense quitter.
He's now the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. Brady
Quinn covered him um in college working for Fox. Of course,
he Brady Quinn also covers the NFL and played in

(01:23:19):
the NFL, How will that work? Will it work with
Josh Rosen? And did the Green Bay Packers make a
good hire when they hired Matt Lafleur. Another one of
Brady's kind of contemporaries, right was struggling professional quarterback who
worked his way up from quality control in two thousand
and eight to fast forward now offensive cording New Tennessee Titans.

(01:23:41):
A new head coach of the Packers, Brady Quinn joins
us in fifteen minutes get his thoughts, but um, look,
I want to start with this one of the great
stories in the NFL. This is the Doug Gotlips Show
on Fox Sports Radio. Starting running back to the Denver Broncos.
He only started eight games and he's the first undrafted
rookie in league history to get selected to a Pro Bowl.
And he didn't even get to play the last game

(01:24:01):
of the season because of risk injury. Obviously won't playing
the Pro Bowl because of it. Phillip Lindsay is our
guest joining us on behalf of Visio. Philip, Look, it's
been a crazy journey for you playing at see you.
Anybody who watches the PAC twelve knows you had that
you had that juice in the tank, juice in your legs.
Take me back to draft night, Kay, did you know
you were going undrafted? Um? You know, I didn't know.

(01:24:23):
I thought I was gonna at least, you know, go
five five through second. You know, I felt that I
was talented enough and I've put enough something on there,
and I had a great pro day to be able
to have the opportunity to hear my name called, you know,
and unfortunately it didn't, you know, for for whatever reason,
they felt that some other running backs were the other

(01:24:43):
How many other run backs are thirty two other running
backs I drafted or somebody better than you know, and
you know, at the end the day, shame on them.
But it is what it is. Yeah, It's it's interesting
because and I talked to some other teams with their
undrafted players, and like, look, people think that we hit
because we got an undrafted player, but the fact is
we had seven chances. So even the Broncos who signed

(01:25:05):
you as as an undrafted free agent, they had a
chance to draft you and and did not. Um, what
was that coming? Chances? They had tim picks? Yeah, so
so so what's that like to walk into their offices
when they want to sign you, and you're like, look,
you had ten shots to draft me and you didn't. Yeah,
I mean, I'm not gonna lie. I was angry. I
was angry and uh and I almost didn't go to

(01:25:27):
Denver just the fact that you know, you had ten spots. Uh,
you drafted two running backs and uh, you know, and
you want me to come sign for free agent? You know,
it just didn't said, will you know? And and not
just them, you know, it's not just the Denver Bronco.
It was all of them. You know, it's all thirty
two teams that didn't you know what I mean? Uh,

(01:25:48):
it was if it wasn't from my mother though I
probably went up state in Denver. What she said? And
what what? What? What? What? What? Okay, So what exactly
did your mom say? She just felt that was the
best It was the best best situation for me. Honestly,
at that point, it was chaotic. I only had fifteen
minutes to decide where I was gonna go. My whole

(01:26:08):
family is in there arguing and stuff, trying to see
what the best pay for me, and I'm sitting here
like man um, I never really left the state, so
this would be probably the first time I ever left
the state. And on top of that, I'm not drafted,
so I'm going out there with no money, no nothing,
and just hope that I can make the team. You know,
it got quiet, and then my mother kind of you know,
she's a quiet woman, but when she usually said something,

(01:26:30):
that's usually right, and uh, you know, she everybody got quiet,
and she kind of just said out of nowhere that
I need to stay home, and uh and she felt
that it was the right thing for me to do
and something good would come out of it, you know.
And at that time I was mad, but I didn't
let that that, uh, you know, me being angry make

(01:26:51):
the decision for me, and I decided to stay home.
How similar is that for people who know philips story?
Your star at at South High School in Denver and
your senior year, your senior ye you had a bad
how you had a bad knee injury? Right, wasn't this
your a c L was other parts your new wasn't
it blew my whole knee out? Um? And and you
were supposed to go to tech, weren't you? And then

(01:27:12):
you end up How similar was that this was the
decision to stay home to to not go to tech.
Had I had what I had Texas A and M
and then I had Utah. They all put their they
took their offers off the table. I was verbally committed
to UH Colorado at the time, and I didn't know
what was going to happen now because you know, the
coach Embry at the time got fired the day he

(01:27:34):
came to my house. He got fired, actually, and uh,
I didn't know where I was gonna go. Coach Mike
McIntyre um on in my scholarship, and that's where I
decided to go and stay. And uh, you know, it
was a journey, you know, because I didn't when I
got to to place, my knee was so bad. They
didn't even think I was gonna be able to play
football again. And I was only a buck fifty. It
was about a hundred and fifty pounds under fifty five

(01:27:55):
pounds man, and so yeah, but I worked my butt off,
and um you know, and I kept my faith high
and I and I and that's the one thing nobody
can ever take it your faith. And I believed in myself.
And now I'm looking at looking back at it, and
this is a great story to be able to tell
kids and and uh and kids they're going through this,

(01:28:15):
it's something that they can look back at and say
they can do too, because anything is possible. Okay, take
me back that you're a hundred fifty pounds, you're coming
off of a devastating the injury. You show up at
see you and you gotta you gotta prove to them
first you can actually play football. Let let alone become
first to kick return around then and then running back.
What was the process like of building it? What was

(01:28:36):
the process like of building your body? Like I said,
it's it took time, you know what I mean? It
took time, a lot of hard work, a lot of
patients and just going out there and working on my craft.
That's when I really uh, you know, I knew I
wasn't gonna be the biggest person, but I wanted to
get as strong as I could, you know, I mean
as fast as I could, And that was my my
biggest goal. And then you know, it never failed. Every

(01:28:57):
it seemed like every everywhere, every every place had I
stepped into, I always looked at the depth chart and
I was always on the very bottom. Movie. So you
always get motivation, you know, and you you get tired
of having to feel like you always gotta fight to
the top. But that's what makes that's what makes a
great story, because that's what keeps you going. It's when
you gotta fight to to get to the top. To
someone Philip Lindsay joining us here on the Doug got

(01:29:19):
Limp Show on Fox Sports Radio. So now you fast forward,
you show up at Broncos camp. How many running backs
are on the on the roster? It was your five?
It was it was Rose Freeman, DeVante Booker, d'angelou Henderson,
and um uh, David Williams. Yeah, what about five of
us all together? When did you know you had it? Um?

(01:29:41):
When every every day I went out there and I was,
I was making plays, you know, I was being consistent.
I was I proved. I proved that I could run
inside just as as I could run outside, because for
some reason, people didn't think I can run inside. And
that's all I've ever done in my you know, my
career was running inside and then as a running back.
If you can't run inside, you're not gonna be good.
You're not gonna be able to last in the NFL. Well,

(01:30:03):
it's all. It's also it's also it's also is it
fair to say, like it's not just running. Everybody in
points out you gotta run inside. But you also look,
you want to make the team, you gotta play special
teams both offense and defense. You gotta be you gotta
pass proteck, you gotta do all the little things everybody.
I think most kids think, Hey, to make it to
the NFL, I gotta be able to run for two
thousand yards like you. Actually, you gotta be all block.

(01:30:23):
You gotta be all tackle. Yeah no, that's that's nowhere near. Uh.
For all these these people that think you have to
rush for all kind of yards, that's not what it's about.
It's about what you can do to to to make
the team a better, better, better team to win football games.
You've gotta be able to catch this as just as
good as you're able to run, you have to be
able to block, get to be able to play special teams.

(01:30:45):
You know, I mean, you have to be able to
make tackles. You gotta be an asset to the team.
And and and for kids coming up, they need to
understand that that to understand that you have to be
able to play many different roles When you're when you're
when you're on the field that as a special team player,
when you're on the field as a gun or you're
a gun or you're not a running back. When you're
nast as a team and you're playing kick return, you're

(01:31:06):
a kick return and you're not a running back. You
gotta be able to change your roles at any time.
And that's what about being an athlete, and that's what
what it is to make an NFL. You gotta be
able to find roles for yourself. And that's how you
stayed there long. When you walked in what was it
week I think it was week eight, right, was your
first start? What? What? What's that like? Considering that, considering
the journey, the knee injury, the lack of a true

(01:31:28):
scholarship to make it too undrafted to to fifth on
the on the depth chart, to being the starting running
back of the Broncos, what was that like? Yeah, it was.
It was exciting, you know. It was something that's like gang.
You know, I came from just trying to make the
team to getting ready to be my first start NFL
career career game, you know. And it was against the

(01:31:49):
Kansas City Chiefs and it was away game, and uh,
I kind of knew, you know, I don't think you know,
nobody had told me I was gonna be the starter,
because I kind of knew, uh, going into the game,
I was gonna probably start the game off, and so
I knew that I need to make an impact in there.
And that's how I thought. I was just be myself,
just play football, you know. And it really didn't hit
in until that next week when when we was playing

(01:32:10):
the home game it was get the Houston Texans, and
I got to hear my name get called out the tunnel,
and then that's when I knew it was really it
was real. It was a sureal moment to be able
to be there, run out of the tunnel, and just
the whole entire stadium just get loud, and it just
showed that names, uh, these fans really do do care
about me, you know, they really do, uh, you know,

(01:32:33):
like me alive. You look in the fans, you stand,
you got little kids wearing afros and and you see
thirty number thirty all all around the stadium, and it
just it just made it made you come to reality day.
You know, you're you're you're living in your childhood dreams. Uh.
By the way, by the way, you mentioned number thirty.
You started year were number two, right, I mean like

(01:32:54):
people you had to you had to, you had you
had to make the jersey change. Um. That Like there's
a bunch of kind of moments where these are like
big moments like, oh wait, I gotta I gotta change
numbers to a running back number, didn't you exactly? You know,
you feel like once you go in there your number
two like that, that's pretty much like saying, you know,
you're you know, you're just here to be a body,
you know what I mean, And so you're just wearing

(01:33:16):
a single digit number. Why everybody else guys a double
digit number there and you're they're drafted, you know, so
every you know, if for them, it's like I'm here
for me, It's like I'm still I'm not outside looking in. Uh,
you know, I still got to go out and prove it.
This is only a tryout, That's pretty much what it is,
and you've got to make the best of your your opportunities.

(01:33:37):
Phil Lindsay joining us here on The Dug Out Lip
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Obviously, hurt Turisty can't play
in the Pro Bowl. But it's not that you don't
want to. What of all the things, what does it
mean to be the first undrafted rookie to be a
Pro Bowler? It means it means a lot. Man. You know,
I haven't really got a chance to really sit back
and sit down and think about it. And actually I
want to give a shout out to the Denver Bronco fan.

(01:33:57):
I want to give a shout out to my agency,
and I want to get out to the organization because, um,
because because they pressed the issue of me not going
to the Pro Bowl, a lot of fans started to
go fund me apps. But because the NFL seeing that,
they carved the rollout for me to be a social
media um, a social media corresponding So I'll be out

(01:34:19):
there in Florida, Orlando, UH, talking to all the players
and being a part of the Pro Bowler, being being
able to Pro Bowl experience, all because of of the fans,
the organization and my agency coming together and NFL seeing
that and UH and made it happen. So I want to,
you know, thank the fans for that. Phil Lindsay joining

(01:34:42):
us on alf A video. He's a a a candidate
for the true value Performance Award. That's the t v P.
Go to video dot Com slash t v P until
January twenty you can select this year's award winner. It's
probably gonna be pretty hard to top you. Undrafted rookie
becomes uh, you know, you lad the lad the league
in yards per carry. Like, I'd love to have you

(01:35:05):
make a case for somebody to vote for you, but
I can't think of any Is there anything else that
can help make the case? We no, I mean, honestly,
you know, this is a good, beautiful part about it.
And this is for everybody that's that you know, my
competition that that's going gets is it's a fans its
fans vote, you know, and and fans don't lie, you know.
And at the end of the day, sanders don't vote
for who they feel uh was the best uh for

(01:35:28):
for this award. And you know last year Alvin Kamara
Wanning And so how about how about having another running
back winning this year? You know, um, you know, and
it's just it's a fun and great experience to see
what the fans think at the end of it. So,
you know, fans vote, and the best thing about this
for the fans are you know, Once you vote, you
know you have an opportunity and a chance to win

(01:35:49):
a seventy TV. You know you can't beat that. So
you know, hopefully everybody does go out there and vote.
Last thing, I know, you gotta run. Um. So oftentimes
you've used this all the different things as motivation, right
between the injury and and the scholarship and being fifth
on the depth chart and undrafted free agent. Now that
everybody said how great you are, how do you stay

(01:36:11):
motivated this offseason? Yeah? No, for me, you never can
get comfortable. You have to understand the NFL STAPs for
not for long. Every time they draft somebody, in time
someone comes in, they're they're they're trying to drive somebody
to replace you. Um. And for me, it's not. It's
it's about it's about the long term. It's not about
one year. One year. Anybody can do one year. It's
about being consistent. Can I do it for three or

(01:36:32):
four or five years? That's when you know that you
became a good running back. And I don't want to
just become a good run back. I want to be
a great running back. I want to I want to
be able to hold the Russian title. You know, Elliott
has held it for how many years now, you know,
and and I you know, I want to be be
the one to to take the belt. But you know,
let's be honest, and I feel like I need to

(01:36:53):
go out there and I need to prove myself again.
Every year. You've got to prove yourself that that you
belong in this league, because all it takes is want
to slip up and everybody thinks that you're done. So
you need to just continue to go. And you can't
be comfortable, you can't be satisfied, and I know I'm
never satisfied. Hey man, congratulations, this has been an amazing
ride to watch you on. We hope to watch it. Uh.
I'll watch you continue next year for the Denver Broncos

and we appreciate you join us on Fox Sports Radio.

Let's react to last night, the news of the day,
and get you ready for football this weekend. You know,

(01:38:45):
it's a lot and knows a lot about football. Guy
who's a start Notre Dame first round draft pick in
the NFL. Covers both the NFL and college football, and
you can hear him every Sunday right here on Fox
Sports Radio alongside are pal Jonas Stocks. It's Brady Quinn.
He joins us on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio as a guy who knows the sport, loves
the sport, played the sport at extremely high level, and

(01:39:05):
knows the position of quarterback really really well. Um, what's
your take away from last night? Huh? I was blown
away by how well Trevor Lawrence handled that stage. I mean,
he's a true freshman. I mean think about that. This
is the first time he's really been on that kind
of position and he was phenomenal. He made the big

(01:39:27):
throws when he needed to. He wasn't fooled by the coverage,
wasn't overcome by the moment. I mean, did he miss
some throws, Yes, that's gonna happen from time to time
with even some of the best quarterbacks, regardless of a
true freshman or fourth year senior. Um. But he handled
the stage as well as I think. And now looking
back on it all, Doug, you can see why debos

(01:39:49):
when he made the switch from Kelly Bryant, a quarterback
who got Clemson to the College Football Playoff last year,
and instead, you know what, with a true freshman that
I think he knew how this sort of top into
the ability and I think we're just seeing the beginning
of what he's capable of. Um. Okay, it did appear
though that they really seemed to fool to a like

(01:40:10):
to us, seemed a bit confused, and that offense seemed
to be a bit of a mess. And I understand that.
Look that Clemson defensive front is nasty and they got
they got dudes on both sides of the football. How
much of last night's undressing of Alabama was players, how
much of it was coaching? It's probably fifty fifty. I mean, look,
bottom line, you know, to have made one poor decision,
poor throw um for an interception that overthrew a wide

(01:40:33):
receiver who you could have made the case was in
a triple coverage. Um the first pick, you know, really,
to me, I think it was a response to the
pressure that they brought. And you've got to credit Clemson
and their defensive coordinator Brent Naples for kind of dialing
that one up. I mean, they they had a traffic
corner out there waiting for him. They do exactly what
Alabama was gonna do if they got that sort of pressure,

(01:40:54):
and so he was baited into it and made a throw.
They took advantage of it. But you know, at the
end of the day, I think it wasn't so much
of I mean, give I can give credit to Clemson
their coaching staff or what they did and how they
executed it. I mean, Um went ferral like he dominated
Jonah Williams at that left tackle spot all game long.
And Jonah Williams is supposed to be one of the
better left tackles heading into the draft next year. So

(01:41:17):
credit credit the players for the way they executed it.
But I also thought Mike Lockley called about as bad
of a game as you could for offensive coordinator, in
particular down at the red zone, down around the goal line.
Um just seemed to do everything wrong. You know, whether
it was a fourth down run, I have no idea.
With two, I have no idea why that was the case.
You know that the fake field goal versus a defense

(01:41:40):
that was fully aware of it called time out figured
out from there, I mean, not even trying to go
get points with time out than four or five seconds left,
which is the turn of the in college football right
before half. I mean the entire way the game was
managed and coach from Alabama was just an owy. I mean,
I've really haven't seen I've seen a performance like that

(01:42:00):
from his staff and quite some time. Yeah, yeah, I
mean it'said. It was amazing on how quickly that they
got exposed. Doug gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
let me ask you about Cliff Kingsbury, who was just
hired as the head coach of the Arizona Cardinals. I
mean even had him tweet out a video. So this
is not roomor anymore. This is it is officially happening.

(01:42:23):
You've been in NFL locker rooms, you know that. Look,
really successful college coaches haven't been good NFL coaches. So
is this well in your opinion, will this work? I
think it can work. There's no doubt about it. I mean,
what would make you think that he can't be or
have the success to sha mcbead um. Now, I think

(01:42:43):
a lot of that comes down to some of the
decision making on your roster as far as free agency,
how you look at talent, how you develop talent coming
up from the draft, which you know, if you're based
on off of a quarterback, you know they don't need one.
They've got Josh rosen And I'm sure that's part of
his thought process in a die, waiting the opportunities that
he had, because it sounds like he could have went
to the Jets, and he could have went to the

(01:43:04):
Arizona Cardinals, and it sounds like the Carl's end up
being the team that he picked. So he must liked
the skill set from rosen Um. But but going moving forward,
I think you know, his creativity as far as his
mind and how he sees the game could be something
that is a huge, huge piece of what makes this
all successful. But he's got to find a defensive coordinator

(01:43:24):
the other side of the football that can take care
of that portion of it. Because that's what Sean McVey did,
That's what Matt Maggie has done in Chicago. It doesn't
matter who you're talking about. Every one of those great
offensive minds, they've they've found someone else on the other
side of the ball that's gonna help them out. Even
Matt Lafleur, who's taking the Green Bay Packer's job with
Mike Pennon keeping him there for the continuity, but he
helped improve the defense this past year. So, um, we

(01:43:46):
haven't We've yet to hear who that's gonna be and
and how that's gonna work out. Um, how does it
work in an NFL locker room? Though guy walks in, like,
how does the coach get the get get the respect
of the players? What's what? What's what's? How does it
really work? Honestly if they're honest and genuine with them?
You know, I think when coaches try to be fake,

(01:44:07):
try to blow hot air and be something they're not,
players see right through that. And when guys aren't prepared
or they're not working harder, they don't come in understanding
who their oppoinment is, what they're trying to do, and
how they can try to go out stopping them. Players
will be able to figure that out very quickly, especially
your veteran players. So you're young players, especially your first
second year guys that really know any difference. You know,

(01:44:29):
they're too young and they're still trying to learning their
process how to be a pro. But the veteran guys
are the ones that can see right through it. And
that's where look, if you know ball, and I think
if you're honest with those players, uh as far as
what what you're trying to accomplish, there will they will
respect that and you can get them to play for you.
I mean again, Sean McVeigh, a guy who is you know,

(01:44:49):
close in age to a lot of the guys that
is coaching, and there's players who are older than on
that roster in l A. And I'm sure they were
kind of looking at it at first, but then once
they see how he breaks down a defense and what
he wants to do offensively, then they say, okay, like, like,
this guy's a project. I can believe in that. You know.
I think Cliff Kings where he could be considered the
same way from an offensive mind, how he looks at things, uh,

(01:45:10):
somewhat of a prodigy with what he was able to
do with Texas tex How teams would come down and
talk with them, and then how he was able to
evaluate and develop talented especially some the quarterbacks that they
went through there. Doug gotlib show here on Fox Sport Trader.
That's a voice of Brady Quinn course, former NFL and
a great superstar at Notre Dame joining us. You can
hear him on Fox Sport Trading every Sunday alongside Jonas
Knocks eight pm. Eas from time five o'clock Pacific. What

(01:45:33):
about Matt Lafleur, the flour former college quarterback. UH played
professionally like Arena League Omaha Beef right, the Omahavio had
a great name, Omaha Beef. Then you know, quality control
kind of worked his way up, spend time with Shanahan,
first in in UH, UH in San Francisco, then he
was mc McVeigh. Then he had his own offensive running
ten Tennessee. But it wasn't great this year. How does

(01:45:55):
that work in Green Bay? From UH? From your perspective,
I think they wanted to key the continuity with the
West Coast system and if you look at Kyle Shanahan
system who he had coached with in the past, it
really stands all the way back to Bill Walsh and
the West Coast offense, So that's where the roots come from.
Now over time, you know, the run game has changed,
especially when he got with Alex Gibbson and how they

(01:46:18):
handled some of the run blocking and some of the
boots off of that, and of course the pasting concepts
have developed over time. But you know, Matt Laflour is
gonna bring a combination of what he had with Kyle Shanahan,
what he had with Sean McVeigh, and then what he's
kind of figured out works for him now this past
year with the Tennessee Titans. Look, the bottom line is,
they didn't have a lot to work with, and I

(01:46:38):
think he did it the best he could um to
circumvent some of the issues that they have. And even
with Marks Mariota, who I just I haven't seen him
taking that next step. And I don't know, you know
who's gonna be able to help bring that out of him. Um,
he's got to want that too, and they've got to
continue to keep building talent out around them to help
him out. But I think that was a tough job

(01:46:59):
to have. If you go back to Mike McCarthy when
he was hired as the Green Bay Packers, head coach.
Go back and look at what the rankings were for
the San Francisco forty Honors when he was the OC there.
They were like thirty feet or thirty seconds something like
that in the league the year before he got the
job to be a head coach. So it's not always
about where that team ranks. I think it's about the vision,
what they can do with this team moving forward, and

(01:47:20):
then ultimately how Aaron Rodgers feel feels about that higher
and I think he looks at Matt Lafleur a is
a guy who can, you know, create some different concepts
for him that they haven't had in the past and
makes some things easier on him and helped elevate the
ability the talent of some of these young wide receivers
they have out around him. Gotlip show on Fox Sports
Trader that that's Brady Quinn. He joins us, Brady, I

(01:47:41):
watched the Chargers. I know they're uh their personnel really well.
We all watched the Patriots, and we all, I think
anybody respects Belichick and Brady and and how good they've
been at home, but Charges feel like Charges have better talent.
They just got they got two incredible rush ends right,
Melvin Ingram and Joey Bosa, Derwin James is a freak

(01:48:01):
of nature, right with his versatility, especially at this young age,
how good he's been. And then offensively they add Hunter
Henry They already have Keenan Allen and Mike Williams and
Melvin Gordon. Well what am I missing this weekend in
New England? Uh? You didn't miss Musch. Look, this is
the best Dame Philip Rivers has ever played on and
people are gonna go back and can test. Well, what
about two oupans six seven? You know the LT years

(01:48:22):
and you know those playoffs years two six two seven.
I believe he towards a c L trying to play
that game. But you know those you know Antonio Gates
and is prime in LT that those are hall of famers.
But the some of those pieces out around Philip Rivers
right now, I think is is probably greater and presents
a greater task to the New England Patriots defense and
Bill Belishack and his staff to stop them. I mean,

(01:48:44):
when you look at all their weapons. You mentioned, Henry
Gates is still there, he's still reliable, Gordon in the backfield,
and Eckler kind of bags us in if you got
Mike Williams at the legitimate red zone target, Keenan Allen's
a stud um tyroll Williams has pitched in as well,
Travis Benjamin's speed thriving. They've got it all and their
offensive lineman plans shabby too, so they can present a
lot of issues. It's just gonna come down to how

(01:49:06):
they start. They can't be flatt in this game. They've
got to get out to a lead or they've got
to kind of fight fire power with what New England
always does at home and typically they're a pretty fast
starting team. And I think if they can get up
and they can force New England to be one dimensional
and then you can unleash Boast on Ingram. That's what
gives the New England Patriots issues when all of a sudden,

(01:49:27):
Tom Brady has to move, has to get out of
the pocket, has to get off the spot to make
throws um That's where he's struggled in the past, in
the postseason, and really this year that's been the biggest
thing that I've noticed in his play that's declined. And
he's forty one, so you expected to but now when
he moves off the spot to throw. If he's a
little bit off balancing, if he doesn't have as good
of a platform, he can't make the throws that he

(01:49:48):
used to make. Um. So if they can get that done,
I think they can pull off an upset. Okay. Um.
I look at the Cowboys and I think, man, their defense,
especially their linebackers, can run, and isn't what they do.
You need to be ab to run with Todd Gurley.
You need to be able to to to you know,
to get back there. Impressure Jared Goff. Like, I don't
know how their offense does. I mean, obviously they're gonna

(01:50:09):
have to run the football, but I kind of like
Dallas's defense against the Rams offense. Am I crazy? No,
you're not. And especially if we see the Rams offensive
line get kind of beat up like we saw and
then ladder pour of the sea portion of the season, right,
Philly kind of had their way with them. And um,
that was one of the things that when I was
looking at their offense and why things are starting to stall,
people were saying, are they thinking out McVeigh, Is that

(01:50:31):
Jared Goff not playing as well? It's it's no, it's
it's going back to Jared Goff in his rookie year
when their offen the line play wasn't great the entire season.
He was under duress and you saw Todd Gurley take
a step back um that year because well there was
always a free defender in the backfield or someone beating
him at the line of scrimmage. So the secret to
the success with d l a Rams that no one

(01:50:51):
wants to touch on is John Salivan and center and
Andrew Worth at left tackle. Since those guys have joined
the team, they've provided better protection, and they've helped elevate
the group of front and they've done a better job
in the run games. So if they can, if they
can take care of the Dallas Cowboys defensive front, you know,
I I think the Rams will be fine, but if
Dallas can can beat them up a little bit um,

(01:51:13):
you know, allow those linebackers to roam free, probably the
best group in the NFL. When you look at vanderessh
Jalen Smith and then the rest of the crew, they
can end up making it a close game in a
long day. And let's be honest too, you know that
Dallas Cowboys fan base is gonna be well represented. It's
not going to feel like a home game in my
opinion for the l A Rams. Great stuff, Brady Quinn.
Check them out this Sunday and every Sunday on Fox

Sports Training a PM. Eastern time, five o'clock Pacific. Grady,
incredible insight. Really appreciate you join us many thanks for
having all Right, that's Brady Quinn. Let's get you to
see the Segger. There's a ton of stuff going on
in in sports. What you got, Steve. We have more
breaking coaching news from the NFL. The Tampa Bay Bucks
are hiring Bruce Arians to be head coach on a
four year deal plus an option year. NFL Network reports

(01:51:57):
Todd Bowles the top choice for defensive coordinator into up
an offensive coordinator, a really passing game coordinator would be
Byron Leftwich Dirk Cutter X of Tampa Bay. According to
Adam Schefter, ESPN has a new job. No, he's not
coming back to Tampa Bay. He's going to the Atlanta
Falcons as their new offensive coordinator. And we mentioned earlier

(01:52:18):
in the show, Cliff Kingsbury finalized the deal to become
the Cardinals new head coach or reported four year contract
plus an option. News conference there tomorrow. The Browns had
a second interview with Vikings offensive coordinator Kevin Stefanski for
Cleveland's head coach vacancy. NFL Network said Freddie Kitchens, the
Brown's own offensive coordinator, is the other finalists. Green Bay
formally agreed to a four year deal plus an option

(01:52:40):
with Matt Laflour to be Packers new head coach. He
was the Titans offensive coordinator just last year. Patriots offensive
coordiner Josh McDaniels, therefore, who interviewed with the Backers, will
stay in New England. Jacksonville interviewed Darryl bevil X of
Seattle for its facing offensive coordinator's job. By the way,
Kingsbury had talked to the Jets last night goes with
Arizona to the Jets talked to Tampa Bay offensive coordinator

(01:53:03):
Todd Monkin today, ex of Southern miss He was the
jets sixth interview for their vacancy. Houston Texans running back
Lamar Miller will be the one added to the Pro
Bowl roster, replacing the injured Philip Lindsay of Denver. Vikings
assistant Adam zimmer Son of Minnesota's head coach were one
in the West squad at the East West Shrine Game,
the College All Star Game in Florida. University of Texas

(01:53:24):
wide receiver a little Jordan Humphrey declared for the NFL Draft.
A p S final poll has Clemson in Alabama one too,
then Ohio State, Oklahoma, and number five Notre Dame l
s U moved up to number six in the NBA. Tonight, Well,
Phoenix has lost six in a row. They're hosting Sacramento
and the Son's Devin Booker, averaging twenty five points. The
game is likely out with back spasms, according to his coach,

(01:53:46):
will be back to Doug in ten seconds. But first,
a word from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a

NFL news again, Bruce Arians no longer in the booth,

(01:54:09):

the box, the Cardinals, the Packers of all filled their
head coaching positions. Another might be announced soon. I'll tell

drop on the show as soon as you're done. You
miss Philip Lindsay. He was really good. I mean I
was great. He was good. Let's just be honest. I
asked the questions which made his answers a lot better. Hitting, hitting,
get to the press the season, and we're not talking
about the holidays, talking about tax season. This season. Maximize

(01:55:16):
your refund. He's the most trusted tax prep software in
the world. Tax layer don't overpay s, which today find
out more a tex layer dot com Steve the second
what he got, Steve, Well, we start with NFL. The
Atlanta Falcons just announced they have hired Dirk Cutter to
be offensive coordinator and they've hired Mike Mularkey to be
Falcons tight ends coach. That's a bunch of malarkey at

(01:55:37):
least one. Cutter, of course, had been there previously as
the offensive coordinator and done a good job. Familiarity, right, Uh,
that's that's that's what it's all about. Obviously, the Sark
deal never never truly worked out. They also weren't healthy
at running back, so uh, if he can, if he
can make their running backs healthy and help their defense,

(01:55:58):
I think Matt Ryan will be fun. I'm happy as hell.
Nine News in Denver reported about the Broncos head coaching
opening that they're down to either Steelers offensive line coach
Mike mun Chack or Bears defensive coordinator Vic fangio age sixty,
who stayed on the Bear's staff to work alongside Matt
Nage this past year. U Fangio is is a great coach,

(01:56:23):
widely respected as a very very good defensive Codiner, what
does that mean? Kind of a curmudgeon. And Mike Munchak
it was with Tennessee. Yeah, he was with he was
with Tennessee. There you go as their head coach. As
a head coach, those are a weird Munchack was a

(01:56:44):
great player, you know, um was offensive line and he's
a great player, and like look maybe and and if
you remember, they loaded up on offensive line. It was
just like the weirdest, like like offensive line. Guy brings
in a bunch of offensive line and they spent a
ton of money in a didn't really work. But the
Broncos have had all kinds of issues with their offensive line,

(01:57:05):
So maybe that's the thought. I don't know. Radio report
on the fan in San Diego that the Raiders have
contacted the office of the City of San Diego Mayor
about perhaps playing the team's home games at the call
Com Stadium venue that was vacated a couple of years
ago by the Chargers. Pro Football Talk pointing out, well,
that would mean that the Chargers would play a game

(01:57:27):
in the division in San Diego. If the Raiders home games,
there's potentially they could also play figure out a way
to pay the play in Mexico right, make it. But
San Francisco giants got talked to as well. They don't
want to go to Vegas yet, not to the Las
Vegas Bowl Stadium yet. They want the big splash the
new stadium, but that's not ready next year. It's a
bit of a mess. It's like, hey, what do you

(01:57:47):
get this. It's like it's like a rental, you know,
you buy a house in the building, the house Like, yeah,
I'm not gonna do next year, Like what do you
We gotta find somewhere live. So you're saying it's a mess,
and it's the Raiders and they're being sued by a
Oaklynn as well. R Lincoln House the show exactly. I
don't know if they could share with the forty Niners
where they're not allowed to play. There's some talk they're

(01:58:11):
not allowed to actually play in San Francisco because of
territorial right, correct, correct, Well, that would be do you
know how many Southern California Raiders fans there are that
would be curious that if San Diego and squeeze a
buck out of that place that's going to be imploded soon.
It's such a dump, yes, such a dump. It leaks
when it rains has free. But now look Oakland is

(01:58:33):
a dump too, and they've actually tried to READO Oakland,
that's that's a dump. Uh, San Diego is a dump
because they haven't tried to redo it. The plan, by
the way, and they had an election on this in November,
is they're going to get rid of what was qual
Calm Stadium, yeah in the parking lot next door, and
then get rid of the old place. But it's gonna
be yeah, half size stadium. So San Diego State will

(01:58:55):
still have a place. San Diego State will open classrooms
and offices on the property around, build a park, whatever else.
But there's not gonna be a that size stadium for
the Holiday Bowl, for example, anymore in San Diego. Maybe
they'll have to knock on the padres door downtown or something.
It's just so bad, so bad, Like they were gonna
build a downtown stadium that was they would have gotten everything,
and now they're gonna get nothing. You know, they're gonna

(01:59:16):
with the stadium down the street, the new stadium here. Uh,
they're gonna end up getting all the Bowl games, and
the Vegas Stadium is gonna end up getting you know,
probably probably a super Bowl eventually, and the Rams Chargers
Stadium is going to have a college final in the
future and a super Bowl as well. And I look,
I understand in San Diego there's a lot to the
deal that goes into it. And the mayor at the

(01:59:37):
time was it was a joke and had all kinds
of personal issues and whatever. That said. None of the
money was gonna come from you. Was gonna be all
come from cars, car rental sales. So unless you rented
a car, you weren't gonna it was gonna be everybody
coming in visiting. Get right. And and by the way,
anybody goes like, oh, it would have cut down on tourism.

(01:59:59):
Name me the play that you've ever not gone in
vacation to where the weather was perfect, absolutely perfect, And
you're like, you know, it's a couple more percentage points
added onto my rental car. Can't do it. Vegas added
the energy text and the hotels and people still go
to Vegas for the for the a C. You know,
the sad thing. And I love San Diego, it's realistically,

(02:00:20):
it's not a major league town anymore. I mean San
Antonio has the Spurs. That's a major league team. I'm
not sure the Padres have been and that's well sports
and I will point out the Padres are they're like,
they're legitimately a year away. Now I know Padre fans like,
we've been a year away for the last ten years.
Legitimately a year away. So we'll see. And they got

(02:00:43):
arguably the best of the new ballparks and it is
San Diego. So I'm not I'm not I'm not the
city shaming San Diego the way you are. Well, I'm
just saying, if you work sports talk radio in San Diego,
you're talking a lot of Mountain West sports talk radio
in Sanio, and ninety seven point three are Southern California
in the NFL hard today exactly. My just I just look,

(02:01:03):
I'm with you. They completely screwed up, the fans, completely
screwed up, the Spanos screw they all screwed up. But
it ended up screwing the city and those people because
you would have gotten everything, Uh, because you're worried about
taxes that you wouldn't have actually paid. The great idea
and there were many ideas in the fifteen years the
charger said, you know we're gonna move. Uh. One was

(02:01:26):
just give us the property that this old place is
sitting on, will build the stadium. You need the whole
land over to us, and then you won't have out
of pockets stadium expense for construction that didn't go. There
was so much animosity between the two sides, which brings
me finally to the Dodgers, which you said, challenged by
the Padres in what one year the Dodger payroll, According

(02:01:49):
to APS, they examined the payrolls every offseason officially dropped
below two million. This patch year they were fourth in
Major League Baseball. Can you guess the top three and
pay roll MLB this past year. I'm gonna go Red Sox, Yankees, Cubs.
It is Red Sox, Giants, Cubs. They got they got
a lot of bang for their buck in San Francisco.

(02:02:10):
Or they had a two hundred ten million dollar payroll,
but only a couple of teams league wide actually had
to pay luxury text. It's very punitive now, so you
know how the NBA goes. So the Dodgers had to
lower the payroll. Yeah, get out there and pressed that
the press. The good news is at least it's inexpensive
to live in San Francisco, right most most expensive city

(02:02:33):
on earth on Earth, and that is do you have
haves and have nots there? I mean, it's just uh crazy.
You think your city has got issues, Go to San Francisco,
which is along with Washington, d C. To my favorite
cities on the planet. Amazing city. Golden State would be
the haves. Now they're moving to San Francisco, but a
terrible homeless problem. And then you have people Silicon Valley,
a ton of money and no one in the middle

(02:02:54):
can afford to live in the city. It's just amazing,
all right. So the Bucks, the cars, the packers, they've
all filled their head, head coaching positions, pretty amazing. You
got my reaction to all of them. I like all
the decisions. And by the way, they're all made for
the quarterback. Do you know why? Because sports are about offense,
and offense in the NFL is about the quarterback. And

(02:03:14):
if you're not believing that trend, you're not paying attention.
