Speaker 1 (00:00):
Boom, What Up America. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio,
coming to you from the sunny city of Los Angeles, California.
Home of the Chadges who are on their way to
take on the Patriots. Home of the raid Is. We're
welcoming in the Dallas Cowboys this weekend. Home of Lebron
and the Lakers. Lebron is still not playing, but the
(00:21):
Lakers got Uh. Lakers got Detroit right, Detroit tonight, Yeah,
I think Detroit tonight. Uh. Home of the diet the Lawyers,
the Dodgers who have Kershaw. Maybe maybe they'll add Bryce Harper,
maybe they won't. But more importantly, home of the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Uh. Ome of the Doug Gottlip Show. Alright,
we're we're watching the Cliff Kingsbury press conference. Not sure
(00:45):
if you've seen, but the Arizona Cardinals have changed their
Twitter handle to breathe the Arizona Cardinals with a K.
That because they've hired Cliff with a K Cliff Kingsbury
as their head coach. Kingsbury Natalie attired three piece suit,
about to accept the job as the new head coach
the Cardinals. Freddie Kitchens is your new head coach the
(01:05):
Cleveland Browns. Bruce Arians is your new head coach of
the Tampay Buccaneers. And of course we mentioned that the
Green Bay Packers. The green Bay Packers made a higher
going back. Was it like two days ago with Matt Lafleur?
Two days ago or so with Matt Lafleur. And we've
heard a lot for a lot about well, you know,
(01:27):
it's the do you know Seoan? Do you know? Oh
way to Sean McVeigh, Right, do you know Sean McVeigh.
If you do, you're hired. Do you know Kyle Shanahan,
If you do, you're hired. And it's it's it's amazing
to me the pushback we've seen on Kingsbury, for example,
(01:49):
Here's what's funny about it. Cliff Kingsbury had a below
percentage as a head coach at Texas Tech, Right, And
so people are smartly and wisely point to that if
Nick Saban was hired as your head coach here is
in the Cardinals, what would people be saying today, Oh,
(02:10):
Saban suck with the Dolphins, right, He's bad with the Dolphins.
But they might say, hey, you know, had they signed
Drew Brees like they wanted to, and the doctors told
him his shoulder. Maybe then Saban would have made it. Now,
I I explained to people yesterday, and not everybody catches
all the entire show. So let me re explain something. Um,
(02:34):
I consider Brad Stephens a friend, and I think we
would all consider Brad Stevens a great coach. And Brad
Stevens had said this specifically, but he's insinuated this to
people that I know, and I've heard it from a
bunch of other guys who coaching coaching the pros that
used to coach in college. And you asked them, would
(02:55):
they go back to coaching in college after coaching the pros?
And they will tell you hell no. And look in basketball,
as in football, the great thing, you know, the great
thing about basketball is if you run a play in
the NBA and the guy gets open nine times in ten,
(03:16):
they make it. Do you know why? Because of the
best basketball players in the world. So there is a
certain amount of like it's one thing to drop a
play in the dirt, it's a completely other thing to
have you dropped play in the dirt, haven't work and
have the ball go through the hoop that's rewarding. But
the number one reason that pro guys don't want to
go back to college is because in the pros you're
(03:37):
coaching ball. In the college, part of what you do
is coach ball. You worry about academics. You worry about recruiting,
you worry about parents, You worry about your staff. You
worry about your training staff. I mean, look, DJ Durkin
got fired at Maryland because he fostered, He fostered a
(04:03):
a culture that was seen as by some abusive, because
the kid died during a conditioning drill during a eighty
degree day. You gotta worry about your training staff, your
strength staff. You gotta worry about your tutors and everybody
kind of working together. You gotta worry about Title nine.
We're by Title nine. Yeah, that's right. If there's a
(04:26):
dispute between a uh, a young man and a young
woman on campus, you have to concern yourself with it.
Although you're not actually allowed to investigate it. You have
to turn over to the Title nine investigation. You don't
just work for your athletic director. You work for the president.
And if you're in a state school, you work for
the state and all the donors. Sounds like fun, doesn't it. Yeah,
(04:55):
And here's the other part. They don't actually care about
all that others off unless something goes wrong, and then
they want you to win more than the guy before.
When you're coaching in the National Football League, it's about ball.
Don't believe me. Aaron Hernandez Aaronez was convicted of murder
(05:20):
while playing with the New England Patriots. Murder hey and
accused and found innocent of a previous double homicide, which,
if you followed the court case, probably did it. I
don't he The fact that he walked as really amazing,
but he was convicted of murder. Did anyone call him
(05:42):
the question? There's been a couple people like, hey, Bill Belichick,
did he lose any credible? Of course not, because that's
not his job. When you're coaching the NFL, it's about
winning football games. Right when Jason Garrett had Zekiel It's
spending for six games? Did anybody say, hey, it's Jason
Garrett's fall, Like, no, what did he foster about? Know?
(06:02):
Because when you coach in the NFL, it's about coaching
ball and and about all that other stuff and what's
made Nick Saban unbelievable. What's made Roy Williams unbelievable and
Mike Sachowski unbelievable. What's made those guys the best the
best is they're great recruiters, They're great organizers, they're great leaders.
(06:23):
They understand how to solve problems, put the people in
proper places, have the right protocol where though they have
to manage and oversee, they can still coach but also
have the best programs. It's a different job because you're
not just coaching ball. And so to the people who
are the naysayers about Cliff Kingsbury, that's fine, it's it's fair,
(06:46):
but there you aren't at a recruiting in balance at
in Arizona like you were at Texas Tech and compared
to the rest of the Big twelve, and you know,
against the sec like look, all of these idiots who
say they come a sports, they have no idea about
the massive change at Texas Tech between the time that
Mike Leach was there and Cliff Kingsbury was there. Here's
(07:12):
what you don't know. Here's what you don't know. When
Mike Leach was there Texas A and m was in
the Big twelve, when they left and went to the SEC.
It totally changed things in terms of recruiting. A and
M suddenly became a destination a destination. Additionally, it allowed
SEC schools to play yearly in the state of Texas,
(07:34):
and it hurt the entire states recruiting to maintain kids
in the Big twelve because the argument for the Big
twelve was, Hey, if you wanna play Big twelve football,
you wanna play uh big time college football in the
state of Texas, you gotta play for a Big twelve school.
And when A and M left, it went to the SEC.
There's a massive sea change because they couldn't make that
argument anymore. It also allowed TCU to rise to prominence
(07:55):
and Baylor had things at things rolling until recently that
job changed dramatically and became a lot harder. And oh yeah,
by the way, you're not just coaching football at Texas Tech,
like he'll be coaching football at the CAR. That doesn't
mean he'll be successful. It just means you're evaluating him
on his performance on something that's completely different than what
(08:17):
than how he's going to have to perform when he
becomes to the NFL. That's reality, and other people are
speaking from a position of lack of education on what
he was up against and what he has to do now,
which brings me to the other false narrative of the day. Well,
it's about Sean McVeigh and it's about good looking coaches.
(08:39):
Is Freddie Kitchens a catch? Well, it's about young guys
and the innovative offensive minds. Is Bruce arians young? Listen,
we just had a group of and only one young
quarterback actually won a game last weekend. We just had
(08:59):
a group of incredibly young quarterbacks. From Deshaun Watson this,
we'll have Pat Mahomes, you know who's in his second year.
Baker Mayfield nearly made the playoffs. Lamar Jackson was able
to help take the Ravens to the playoffs. Uh, Mitch
should Mitch Drabinski in his second year just got outsted
(09:21):
from the playoffs. Like go around Lee Carson. Wentz would
have taken the Eagles to the playoffs last year, and
of course would have taken him this year had he
not been hurt. Still, may still couldn't play at any time.
Jared Goffs the quarterback. Look that pay attention to the NFL.
It's about the young quarterback and can you get him
(09:41):
to achieve his potential. If you can do that, your
team will win and you will stay employed. And that's
what people want to watch. And you have to find
the specific fit for your guy it. I don't know
how good Matt Lafleur's resume is because they weren't rate
with the Tennessee Titans. But the idea of a guy
(10:03):
who's been with Shanahan, been with McVeigh, worked with Mariota,
played himself in the Arena league, understands the various concepts
of it and is close to the same age or
a similar age and a similar mindset of Aaron Rodgers.
All they're trying to do in Green Bay is, Hey,
we'll hire a guy, and your job is lead a team.
(10:24):
Be a guy that people can get behind and communicate
and effectively and get the most out of your quarterback.
Cliff Kingsbury really smart guy, former NFL quarterback, former college
guy who's worked with some of the best of the
best and played in the league. Can he walk in
with swagged to lead the team, and can he communicate
with his quarterback and put Josh Rosen position to succeed
(10:47):
Bruce Arians Why is that a great higher Because Bruce
Harrians was the one who fixed Ben Rothsburger when Ben
Rothisberger was a mess off the field and on the field.
And do you know who everyone says has always said
that Jamis Winston reminds them of as a player, Ben
Roethlisberger holds the ball too long, big body can play
after contact, tries to make plays down the field, and
(11:08):
sometimes that leads to sacks or interceptions. Right, Freddie Kitchens
figured out how to communicate with Baker Mayfield. They're on
the same wave length. They like each other, and the
feeling is that if you can't get Lincoln Riley, you
get you get this guy because they already have a relationship.
They'll work together. We'll figure the rest out. Of course,
(11:30):
Greig Williams is a far better resume than Freddie Kitchens.
It has nothing to do with resume. That's to do
with one position and one position only doesn't mean they're
all work. But that's the logic behind it. And yeah,
there is a certain McVeigh why because Jared Goff looked
(11:53):
like a bust playing for an old school conservative, defensive
minded coach, and Jeff Fisher hire a guy who can
communicate with him, put him in a position who succeed
and how the ram has done the past two years.
He hasn't picked up a pen in a defensive film
room at all, not one time. That's not what he's
(12:15):
hired to do. Even the Fangio higher with the Denver Broncos.
You're like, well, he's a defensive guy, Doug, Yes, But
the Fanjio he's just brought into the defense because they
got Kubiak, who's basically the head coach of the offense,
who's a former quarterback who communicate with the quarterback. All
of these hires are the same, but they don't have
to do they or how young they are, how good
(12:37):
looking they are. The Doug Otlip Show is brought to
you by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so
we know how to cover almost anything when it's game time.

(12:59):
asked dontrelle him in one of his star wide receivers.

Fox Sports Radio. Let's keep it with the nash to
(14:50):
football leg uh. He's had an outstanding year with the
Indianapolis Colts, who went from a team who people when
they when they went for it in their own forty
three against the h some Texans end up losing the
game people game of past, Like I'm not making the
playoffs this year. It's more about culture, more about culture. Well,
the culture has changed, but so have the wins and losses,
and they become dare I say, like the hottest team
(15:13):
in the a f C. Dontrell had been of the
Colts joints us on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Look, you've been in other places San Diego,
last year in in Chicago, Um, how did this thing
turn around mid season? Dontrelle It's just a matter of
just players just buying in, players recognizing hey, we got
(15:35):
something good going here and we all just need to
buy into the coach of buying though, you know, the
coaches and buying to each other. Was there like a
conversation or did you just conversation? It was a conversation,
you know, you know, is the players only conversation? Like,
all right, listen, this is unacceptable. Um, let's find a
(15:57):
way to win. What's Andrew looked like? Uh? What it is?
Andrew Like? Yeah, I mean the edge is different. Edge
is different. He's cool, he's funny as a trial humor,
but at the end of the day, he's all ball.
He uh he does, he's he holds himself with a
high standard and rightfully so he performs that way. Have
(16:20):
you do you? I don't know if you're ever on Twitter?
Do you have you follow that Captain Andrew Luck? You're
following at Captain Andrew Luck the like where because he
looks like a Civil War general said you haven't eaten
I have it? But he definitely operates like that. I'll
tell you that. Oh my gosh, it's it's hilarious, right,
it's it's funny like uh uh here here here's one
(16:40):
um let me see here. This is this is great. Uh,
dearest mother. Our celebration festivities were mighty, but brief. We
begin our march to Houston for a thrice battle with
the Texans. Each unit has a victory over each other.
We shall drill among bulls to better understand their tactics.
I'm equal part confident and and just Andrew like, as
(17:01):
a guy who went to Virginia, you can appreciate a
little Civil war humor, right, absolutely, absolutely, that's Houns just
like it, which is a different word. Uh what about
for you personally? Right, like a couple of years ago
with the Chargers, you had you had a great year,
but it's kind of been a journey to get you
to where outside of t Y. You know, you and
(17:22):
Ebron have have really kind of reinvented yourselves. What's this
been like for you within this offense? It's been cool.
You know, I love this offense. I've been a part
of the four years and um, you know, Coach Frank
and Coach Serriani, they believe in me. They They've seen
the work that I've done in the past, and it
just feels good to just be back in it as
(17:43):
one of the offenses that I love to just being
as a receiver, as a player, and you know, it's
it's it's been good. It's felt really good. Yeah. Well
you mentioned Frank. Frank was with you. Coach Mick was
with you when you were with the Chargers. How different
is he now now that he's the head coach of
the Cult Zero Like, not a drip out of anything
(18:05):
has changed from his demeanor, his speeches. Uh, he's the
same guy that from the first day I met, the
first team meeting in San Diego, the team meeting, the
first team meeting, I listened when I was at the coach,
So it was it's amazing. It's it's good when you
know coaches guys. People don't change when their position changes.
(18:27):
They continue to be the same guy. And I think
that's why Coach has had so much success as a
head coach. Well, this is not your first trip into
Kansas City. Um, it is your first trip into Kansas
City in the playoffs. What's for for dudes who have
not played in Arrowhead? Many people think, well, it's like
a college stadium in terms of how loud it is,
how much the fans are into it. What what's it
like to play in Arrowhead? It's it's phenomenal. It's from
(18:52):
the from the national anthem all the way to the
Tomahawks and the loud noise. It's it's fun um and
you I to love it. You gotta enjoy those moments
because you'll never get them again. You'll never be in
the stadium that loud, You'll never hear fans that loud,
and you'll never hear a national anthem like that. So
it's uh for me. I think the first time I
(19:13):
was there, I was like, Okay, okay, these are super fans.
They do it is a great atmosphere. And it doesn't
matter if you're if you're wanting you no. Sixteen or
if you're you know, you know, seventeen sixteen, and oh,
they're gonna hear the exact same and you gotta love that.
Don chall Nman of the Colts joining us here on
(19:34):
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox sport Trader. Two schools
of thought, right, first school thought is, hey, you gotta
keep their offense out the field, run the football long
sustained drives. Other school of thought is screw that, you
gotta win in a shootout, which is the proper school
of thought going into this game. Um Our defense is
playing well, so as long as the offense just does
(19:57):
their job, everything will be fine, you know, because once
we're a good team all around, and as long as
we you know, take care of the football, win to
turnover battle and just continue to not make negative plays
and just make depositive plays consistently, consistently, consistently, it'll be
(20:20):
a great game for us. How different is the level
of play in the playoffs to the regular season, now
that you've experienced life on the road in Houston, is
it is it legitimately different or is it just we're
looking at it differently. I think you guys are looking
at it differently. We've been in playoff mode since weeks
seven or eight, so we go in each game if
we lose around you know, we started that week seven
(20:42):
and we put it behind us, and let's just said,
let's worry about today. Let's not worry about tomorrow. Let's
not worry about yesterday. Today is the only day that
matters when it comes game day? Right? How does t y?
How does he keep getting open? Like it's one of
those things like he walks into a stadium and everyone
knows that, uh that he's the guy, the first guy
(21:02):
that Andrews looking for. And yet like, dude, he's five
ten buck eighty, Like you're not supposed to you're not
supposed to be that dynamic when you're five ten buck eight.
How does he do it? He's a special player, man.
He works at his craft and he's like just like Andrew,
he dies into his craft, like he those are the
(21:24):
special ones that you know, you never get complacent, keep working,
keep working. And that's that's the type of let's see
what that's the type of team maybe he is. He
just continues, I'm not going to let you guys down.
Well he hasn't. Hey listen, Don Chell, congrats on the
success thus far in the season. Uh, safe travels with
(21:44):
under behind the leadership of Captain Andrew Luck And we
appreciate you join us on Fox Sports Radio. No problem,
Thanks for having to guys. You guys have a good days.
Don Charles Leman joining us. Uh. Don Elman joined us
from the Indianapolis Colts. I can't believe those guys, don't
don't look at that. That thing is so funny. So
it's so funny, it's remarkable. Let's catch hell with Ralph
(22:05):
Hurb and find out what else is going on the
world sport ralf. But you got well, Thank you very much, dougg.
And it seems like it's introductions day. First Cliff Kingsbury
meeting the media this hour, and then next hour we're
supposed to hear from new Packers head coach Matt Lafleur.
Of course, the other rumors that are out there that
Cleveland's going to hire Freddie Kitchens as their new head coach.
They've already dismissed interim head coach and defensive coordinator Greg
(22:27):
Williams and Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio going to the
Denver Broncos. While the team is not officially announced it,
Fangio did tweet out that he's excited to win and
bring a Super Bowl to the best franchise in the NFL.
Gary Kubiak expected to move from the front office to
be the Broncos offensive coordinator. Still three vacancies right now
(22:49):
in the NFL. Of all those go through that being Miami, Cincinnati,
and the New York Jets. Alex Marvez does say that
Chris Richard, the Dallas defensive coordinator, is the favorite to
go to the Dolphins. The NFL and NFL p A
re leased a joint statement that an investigation into Eric
Reid's claim of improper drug testing was unfounded. The study
(23:10):
found the algorithm used to select players at random work
perfectly and his selection rate was not out of the norm.
They also noted that the number of times he claimed
to be tested was not an accurate figure, and having
already earned his degree at Alabama, quarterback Jalen Hurts has
entered his name into the transfer portal, necessary step to
allow to be contacted by their programs and then make
(23:31):
him eligible to play next season At a new school.
We'll be at to Doug in ten seconds. But first,
this from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a living
room to a dog taking a joy ride, we've covered it.
Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two. Because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers underwritten
my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable
(23:53):
in every state. Doug vats you. Thanks for Doug Gottlim show,
Fox Sports Training. Let's let's discuss that that air cred thing.
Thanks So, Eric Reid part of the collusion lawsuit with
Colin Kaepernick to get and then he gets back in
the league with the Carolina Panthers. And then he said
at one point he had been tested seven times, and
then eight times, then nine times, and the first time
(24:15):
when he said seven times, I said, bull, I don't
believe it, right. And and look, this isn't just to
Eric read this is hey, we get this from guys
all the time, to get popped for a steroid test,
like you know. I uh, I don't know how I
got in there. I don't know what it is. I
(24:36):
don't even big poppy, I don't know what I just
deposited for like, look, if you'll give us, you'll say, hey,
I'll fully disclose what was found in my urine or
in my blood, You'll fully disco disclose, like, tell us
what was in there. The reason they don't tell us
what it was in there is because once we find
(24:57):
out what's in there, we know that it was an
artific issueal steroid and they had to have taken it
for it to be in there. Right, there's a reason
they don't do that. It's just like any of these
some of these former players who are like, well you know, um.
The reason that steroid guys, steroid guys like the Barry
(25:20):
bonds Is and the Roger clemens Is of the world
have never come out and said, yes, I did it,
everybody was doing it was because well one, everybody wasn't
doing it too. They know it was wrong. And there's
lots of other guys that remain silent and not fully
disclosed because if they do all you have to do.
They didn't technically steroid test, right, it wasn't within the
collective Barton agreement. But the way in which you can
(25:43):
still find out who was on steroids is go back
through the medical records. Every baseball player. Every athlete has
to take a physical for insurance before any season college
pro I believe it in high school. And when they
do that to take your they take blood. Now we
don't have the ability to know what was in it,
(26:04):
but if you want to clear yourself, all you gotta
do is show us your records. It's in there. They
don't do it because they know it was wrong. But
this is a really bad look for Eric read This
is a really bad look for his movement. And this,
(26:24):
by the way, is part of the Kaepernick story, which
is not being told the whole truth. And there's a translation.
When you're not being told the whole truth means you're lying, right.
This is a joint statement from the NFL and n
fhap A. This is not a statement from the NFL
that the NFL p A is like now, we disagree
with that statement. This is a joint statement. We take
(26:47):
any claim questioning the integrity of our collective, collectively bargained
performance enhancing drug policy seriously. We asked an independent administrator
of the policy to review and produce a report on
the claims of targeting. There's no evidence of targeting or
of any other impropriety with respect to his selecting for
testing any Ian Rappaport, who does work for the NFL network,
(27:13):
which technically is owned by the NFL, but in reports
also a reporter and more. On the Independent administrators report
on Eric reads drug test claims, source said it was
determined that Reads Read was drug tested fewer times than
he publicly claimed. Liar, liar, pants on fire. The NFL
would have to be idiots, idiots two uh to target
(27:45):
Eric Read because of his stance on the national anthem
during a time in which he's suing the NFL, suing
the league for keeping him out of the league, like
they would have to be. It's so first you think
the racist, now you think you're idiots, and you have
(28:07):
people that are like, I don't care what the report says,
I know they were targeting. Like, then what was the
point of having an independent report and having a joint
statement between the nfl PA and the NFL. It may
feel like he's been tested nine times, it may feel
like he's been targeted, but the reality is to put
(28:29):
it in the computer, the computer spits out a bunch
of names. However many times he's been tested, it's fewer
and they didn't do it to hear they didn't put
that in the report in order to humiliate him. But
this is a pretty humiliating source within the report. And
you end up doing more damage than you do more,
(28:50):
more damage to yourself and to your movement. But this
is you know, it's not just Kaepernick wearing pig sock.
It's not just Kaepernick and his castro shirt. It's not
just Kaepernick and his girlfriend tweeting a meme about the
about the Ravens owner and the Ravens wanting to bring
him in, and ray Lewis going to the raven say hey,
(29:12):
you should bring him in to be a backup quarterback.
And by the way, they went out and got an
athletic backup quarterback. His name is Lamar Jackson, and he
led him to the playoffs. That could have been you.
It's kun Kaepernick's people have said he wants to be
a starter and he wants starters money. That's why Seattle
wanted nothing to do with him, Like, hey, we have
(29:34):
a starting quarterback. That's why Denver. That's one of the
things that John Elway was trying to tell you at Denver.
It's like, look back before this controversy. We wanted him,
but we wanted him at seven million dollars, not at fourteen.
And it was about money to him, so he made
fourteen and then they cut him. When you're told to
(29:56):
have truth, you're told a lie. Airic Greeden may have
been test did five times instead of seven, but you
said seven, So you lied, and you made it out
to be like you were being targeted. And now that
we have facts, and we have the facts that are
(30:18):
not disputed by the nfl p A, right, that's the
it's a big thing in this statement. They're not just
calling him a liar. The nfl p A is jointly
calling him a liar along with the NFL and the
n f l p A sticks up for everybody. Right.
They are the union, he is a paying member of
that union. And the nfl p A saying that there
(30:43):
is no evidence of targeting or any other impropriety with
respect to his selection for testing, that is case closed.
That is Eric reed trying to create some sort of
controversy when none exists in our In our everyone's a
victim society. He's I want to be a victim, even
(31:07):
though he was given an opportunity and oh yeah. By
the way, their defense was a disaster. Not all his fault,
but he was part of the defense that had the
entire defensive coaching staff fried during the season. Like the
the NFL does dumb pr things, but like they're not
that dumb, right, they're not idiots. You can make mistakes,
(31:33):
but they're not idiots. You think Roger Goodell, who makes
you got Roger Goodell? Who things are good? Ratings are up.
The controversy has kind of gone away, the lawsuit while
it's still taking place. Whenever happens happens. Do you think
Roger Goodell is gonna pick up the phone, you know,
and sit there and go like, hey, he's back in
(31:53):
the league. Let's drug testine. Let's get this guy. Here's
the other part to it. If you didn't take performance
dancing drugs, what's the big deal. You're just beeing in
a cup. You just being in a cup. Yeah, they
watch you while you pee in a cup. That's part
(32:14):
of the protocol, And yeah, you gotta do it at
after an NFL game. It's a little bit tedious, so
does every other player in the NFL. That's how they
maintain a clean game. If anything, and I've always said this, like, right,
if you want to disprove anybody who thinks that you
might be doing something, And I actually look at it
as a I've always looked at this. My mother in law,
(32:38):
I was pretty yoked up in college, Like I'm in
good for a forty two year old guy, I'm pretty
good shape. When I was in college, I was very big,
very strong, very muscular, very athletic. And my mother in
law once asked my wife back ever taking steroids, And
my wife waited like six months before she actually asked
(32:58):
me that said, like, you know, my mom said, know
what she said? She asked me if you were on steroids.
Like that's like the nicest thing, the coolest thing anyone's
ever said to me. If somebody asks you and you're
not on steroids, you're on steroids, that must mean that
your physique looks pretty eamn good, doesn't it. That's like
if you ask, if you ask a woman, you know,
if they're real. Remember the famous scene from Seinfeld. They're
(33:22):
real and they're spectacular. That's if they look so good
that somebody thinks they might be fake, that's actually a compliment.
Regardless of which this is not a compliment to Eric Read.
This is I don't want to hear from Eric Read
anymore because making up facts is lying, and you lied
(33:42):
with the intent of making the NFL. Trying to make
the NFL look bad look like conniving guys that are vindictive.
And they may be conniving, and they may be vindictive,
but they're not idiots because they would have to be
beyond stupid to target agreed. After he's suing the league
and he gets back into the league with the Carolina Panthers,
(34:04):
the Dolphins are looking at John Harbaugh to be their
new head coach. Real news are fake news by no

honestly I did that this morning. Trash Day for us
is Wednesday, and I was I thought it was Tuesday.
Why would I think it was Tuesday? What? What? We
(35:32):
did two shows the last two days or I don't know.
I just I worked a lot last week and I
was super tired all weekend and figured it out whatever Um,
so I get home from the dog gets up and
he comes over, nudges my hand. Time to get up,
and I gotta go to the park. Dude to take
him to the park, runs around, takes a dump in
(35:53):
the bushes, and then we go and we get coffee
for me and my wife. Come back and trash trucks coming,
like trash trucks literally, like, oh man, did I book it?
I was. I was amazing at my ability to get
the trash cans out while the trash man was still
uh was still getting the containers into his vehicle. Anyway,
(36:13):
let's get to a game show like this is Game
Time Tide on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Ryan Music as
Dan Buyer continues to fight off a cold. Yeah yeah, yeah.
(36:35):
How bummed his Buyer that he's home and there's no golf,
Like there's golf next week, right, there's no God. Dan
Buyer is a huge golf guy. He is legitimately sick.
He's apologized profusely over emails, uh that that he hasn't
been able to come in this week. But I know
that he's watching a ton of you know, he doesn't
watch movies. I gotta send him a text, I will
get to this in a second. Music. What's the game today? Well, Doug,
(36:56):
today's game is real news? Fake news? All right, real
news or fake news. I'll read you a headline. You
tell me if it is real or fake. Let's get
started here. Hall of Fame wide receiver Jerry Rice thinks
if the forty Niners have a chance to trade for
Antonio Brown, they should quote go for it. Is that
real news or fake news? Sounds like real news? That
(37:17):
is real. There you go, John, they are real. In fact,
he told the game in the Bay Area. If you've
got a player like that that you can get that
can really add to the offense of the San Francisco
forty Niners when those guys let loose and go play,
I think you have to go for it. Antonio Brown
perhaps a future forty Niner. Um. Yeah, Like here's like
(37:43):
I like Jerry Rice, Okay, I mean I've I've known
him a little bit, um And like you ask your
great wide receiver, would you add another wide receiver? They're
always gonna say, go add into the wide receiver. And
there's no doubt that he wants to be a forty nine,
or at least he thinks he wants to be a
forty Niner because uh, because he's now following San Francisco
forty Niners on Twitter. I just I don't what do
(38:05):
you have to give up to get him? You know,
what do you have to give up to get him?
Do they need skill position guys with Jimmy Garoppolo? Sure,
I mean you already have your tight end in place,
you have one stud wide receiver, pretty good running backs.
But what do you have to give up to get him? So?
I hate trade scenarios like this. Do you want Antonio Brown? Yes?
(38:26):
Are you willing to give up a first and a third? No?
And take on his substantial contract and a guy who
might go south with you on his attitude? Probably not?
So that that that's where it gets sticky. We'll keep
it here. In the NFL, real news are fake news
that former Packers head coach Mike McCarthy is only considering
the Jets as his next head coaching job in the
(38:46):
NFL and they're spectacular. That is, in fact real news.
According to Adam Schefter, he will only consider the Jets. Um.
We now know that people were trying to link him
to perhaps the Browns job, maybe even the Cardinals job.
Those have all been filled. So it's either the Jets
or nothing for Mike McCarthy. Yeah, look, I think that
(39:08):
it also has the ability to shape a roster the
way he wants. I think he probably believes in Sam Donald.
I think that you got to get a chance to
remake a franchise. I also think there's not a lot
of other options out there. Right Brown's jobs closed up,
Tampa jobs closed up. It's like Cincinnati, No, no thanks,
Cincinnati or the Jets, Like, what are their jobs? Are
there any other job still open? Did you say the Dolphins?
(39:30):
I did not say the Dolphins, But those teams don't
have a quarterback, so you know who your quarterback is.
The young guy who has no ego. Donald's got no
ego that you can shape. That's the opposite of Aaron Rodgers.
Speaking of the Dolphins, Doug, we got them coming up
next year. Real news are fake news that the Dolphins
are still interested in acquiring John Harbaugh from the Ravens
(39:51):
to be their new head coach. That's they're real and
they're spectacular on a roll so far. That is in
fact real news. According to profile ball Talk, they said this,
there's one name that continues to loom over the Dolphins
head coach Process Raven said coach John Harbaugh, there's a
lingering belief that Ross, the owner of the Dolphins, will throw,
will eventually throw his hands in the air and give
(40:12):
Baltimore whatever they want in order to get hardball. Whatever
they want is is again, it's like, are you willing
to give a first round pick? No? Are you willing
to give like a fifth round pick. I could see
them giving up maybe one first round pick. I'm not
giving up first round pick for a coach. I'm not
saying you. I'm saying I could see the Dolphins doing it. Yeah,
I don't know. Alright, Last one, Doug, Real news are
(40:37):
fake news. Due to a setback in his rehab, DeMarcus
Cousins is not expected to play for the Warriors until
sometime after the All Star break. Real news are fake news,
are fakes. That is fake news. According to a report,
they were listed as returning somewhere around January six. Steve
Kerk confirmed that, saying it will happen around that time,
not specifically, but around that time. Okay, bargus set back,
(41:02):
We'll see the day. This is game time on the
duck Gottlieb Show. Okay, so fire is not here. That
means he's at home. We got to send him a
couple of movies because he hasn't watched like any movies.
What do you want to say? What? What? What suggestions
should we send him? Ramos? I can't believe I thought
of It's on Wednesday. We should just pulp fiction? Right,
(41:22):
watch pull fiction or you can't come back to work. No,
that's reasonable. Pulp fiction. Like his excuse note you're not
allowed back at at work again? Get your notes? Lisa,
his wife signing it saying we watched pulp fiction. No,
we just we can ask him questions to know if
he's watching or hasn't watched it, and if you watched it,
he'll like it. Does anybody not like pulp fiction? I
(41:43):
don't know anybody who's Chopper? Is this Z's baby's dad? Said?

Up Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio how do you
(42:07):
fix the quarterback position? How do you get those guys
to succeed? Right? That's basically the challenge of all these
NFL teams. That's the only logical conclusion you can make
with all these hires, every one of them has something
to do with the quarterback position, doesn't it? Even even
(42:28):
Fangio who's a nick new head coach of the Denver Broncos.
Right that he goes in concert with Gary Kubiak, who's
a former quarterback, former offens coordinator for a corner coach,
former head coach of the Broncos. But he's an offensive guru.
So from Matt Lafleur to Cliff Kingsbury to Bruce Arians
to you name it, fixed the quarterback position? Is it
(42:52):
that easy? Why don't we ask somebody who played quarterback
who knows what it takes to win a Super Bowl.
He's Kurt Warner, He's Hall of Famer. Is also an
animals for the NFL Network. You can see Kirk on
Kirt on like I did, I did the reverse Kirk Cousins. Uh.
You see Kurt on NFL Game Day Morning this Saturday twelve,
New and Eastern Sunday at nine am. Eastern who will
(43:15):
getting you up early on the on the West coast
on Sunday after that Saturday night game at the coliseum. Kurt,
let let me ask you, Um, all of these hires
feel kind of the same, even if they're dissimilar, and
that they're all trying to fix the quarterback situation. Is
this a trender? Is this how it's always been in
the NFL? Well, I mean, I think it's always been
a part of it, But I think the farther we
(43:36):
go into this thing, and the more it's you know,
catered towards offenses in terms of rules and scoring points
and and all of that. Bottom line is, for a
number of years, if you don't have that guy, you
don't have a chance. You don't have a chance to
win a Super Bowl outside of those few select situations
where you have a great running game and a great
defense and you just need that game manager. But that
(43:58):
is so rare in this business, you don't see it
very often. So yeah, the bottom line is, Hey, if
you got a quarterback, you've got to make sure he's
one of those guys or you're not gonna have a chance.
So I think a lot of these hires are in
that vein that. Hey, you know, we've got to make
sure that position is squared away and then let's finish
it out with everything else. And you know, as you said,
(44:20):
a lot of these hires seemed to be in that direction,
like this guy will work great with our quarterback. I'm
always going to be there the rest of the organization,
but it'll be great with that. So let's fix that
first and see if we can get the other pieces
as well. Well. Look, you you played in a couple
of different places and they all had kind of different
ways of doing it. Um, let's let's let's let's start
(44:40):
with Let's start with Green Bay, right, because that's the
best quarterback of the ones that needed a head coach.
Matta Floor is a former quarterback, right. He played in
the Arena League like you did. He played for the
Omaha Beef. I love that. I just like I like
saying Omaha Beef. Um, and you know, went from quality control,
kind of worked his way up a little Shanahan, little
McVeigh had his own team. It wasn't like they were
(45:01):
setting the world on fire with the Tennessee Titans. What
do you think of that marriage? But before they actually
ever spend time together. What do you think of that
marriage with the Green Bay Packers. Yeah, that's the thing is,
you know, I don't know Matt very well. I don't know.
You know, a big part of being an offensive coordinator
is finding an offense or making an offense, creating it
(45:22):
around the players that you have. So just because they
didn't set the world on fire with Marcus Mariota and
and that Tennessee team doesn't mean this guy is not
innovative and can't bring a great scheme that fits Aaron
Rodgers um. And I think that really becomes the question
is I would love to know what really went wrong
in Green Bay. You have a smart, talented quarterback with
(45:45):
a guy that's been very successful offensively in this league.
Why couldn't they figure out a happy medium of you know,
what each of them do well or what they like
on a weekly basis, and and make it work and
make it look better than it did. I don't know.
So maybe you know a new viewpoint and maybe you
know they connect earlier in which they can create something together,
(46:08):
because I think that's really at the end of the day,
that's the bottom line is we have to create something
together where we both see it we both understand it.
But more importantly, the quarterback feels comfortable with the ball
in his hands, with what you're calling on a down
to down, on a week to week basis. And that's
really what it all comes down to, because all quarterbacks
(46:29):
see the game differently. You can't just give a blanket
play and it's a great play, It's worked for thirty years,
and expect every quarterback to be able to see it
the same way and love that play. You've got to
be able to figure out how that guy sees the
game and then you have to create around that all
of fammer Kurt Onener joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh. Nationally,
(46:49):
I think people are a little surprised at Cliff Kingsbury.
It's fired to Texas Tech and gets the Arizona Cardinals job.
You're a former Cardinal, you're a former quarterback. Kingsbury was
in the league briefly. When when you were in the
league more as a backup obviously, what are your thoughts
in the possibility that that works in Arizona. Well, I mean,
you know, again, I think there's a lot of questions there.
(47:10):
I got a chance to meet Cliff about a month
ago and sit down and talk football with him, and
I really like him as a person. I think he's
he's smart from a football perspective. Uh, you know, a
couple of questions. Who's he bringing as a defensive coordinator?
You know, what is his ability to hire that quality
staff having no experience really in this world? I think
that's where it starts. And then the second part of
(47:32):
it is just leading men. That to me is always
the most difficult part of being a head coach. It's
not do you know football? You know, can you teach football?
Can you put a good game plan together? It's being
able to lead men regardless of the situation. Like if
we if we win, it's easy, you know, but but
if things go orry or guys get hurt and you start,
(47:53):
you know, falling down that path where you're not winning,
can you be able to step in front of fifty
three and give them a plan and get them to
play and compete and see that plan and move forward
with you on an every day, every week, every year basis.
And you know, I think the crazy thing is, you know,
when you heard Steve Wilkes here, you know, up in
front of man, he seemed like, you know, everything was
(48:16):
in control and he could lead men, but there was
obviously something awry in the way that it played out
due to the lack of success that they had this year,
and they felt, Okay, he's not the right guy to
be able to handle this situation. UM. And so that
to me is is the second question I would have
Cliff Kingsbury. But the problem is you don't ever know
that until you see them in that environment. And uh,
(48:39):
and nobody ever has so Uh, we'll see when that
when that time comes. All right, let's let's let's get
to this weekend's games. UM. I mentioned the fact there's
gonna be a late night game and you gotta get
up early for for the NFL network on Sunday, Cowboys
coming to town. Probably between Cowboys and the Rams. Rams
haven't blocked as well at the of the season they
(49:00):
did the start of the season. I haven't been able
to get the ball to Gurly. This is a Cowboys
defense which seems on paper to be one that can
run with Girly, with with their linebackers and be able
to cover um and then offensively their ability to shorten
the game run the football. But again this is all
on paper. You see the game at a much higher level.
What are your thoughts on Cowboys Rams at d l
(49:20):
A Coliseum. Well, I mean, I do think you make
a great point where the Rams struggled down the stretch
was offensive line play. Um, you know, for whatever reason
that was, uh, you know, did the season start wearing
on him. You've got a couple of older guys up there.
I don't really know where to just play some good teams.
But they struggled up front, and those struggles led to
lack of running game. It led to Jared Goff getting
(49:42):
a lot of pressure, him not being as good under pressure.
And I tell you what, what what the Rams do
better than anybody in the league's play action obviously off
of Girly and what they do offensively, but it's the
play action. It's here. We're gonna show it to Todd
Gurley and you better come up and stop him because
he is a beast when he gets going downhill, and
they we're gonna hit you over the top for big
play after big play, And they didn't have that the
(50:04):
last couple of weeks because of the Girly injuries and
as I said, because of the issues up front. But
that to me is where this game is going to
turn that defensive front of Dallas against the offensive line
of the Rams. Do they get the ability because if
you watch last week Seattle, they didn't throw the ball
a lot, but when they threw it off play action
is when they got their big plays. Because Dallas attacks
the line of scrimmage, they're good against the run, and
(50:26):
they know they've got to stop that first. That's gonna
open up the second level. If they can't get that
pressure on Jared Golf. So if you're breaking down one area,
that to me is where this game is going to
be won or loss, or at least where Dallas can
keep it close. Uh, if they can have success in
that area. Kurt, great stuff, Great, catch it up. Look
forward to seeing you on the NFL Network on Saturday
at noon Eastern and on Sunday at nine am Eastern.
(50:48):
Get some rest, you'll need it. We'll see you soon,
all right, when you coming into town. I'm coming back

(51:10):
the fouls, and he takes the game winning shot and
he usually makes it. And then you get to run
the court all day, four on four, full court at
Kurt Warner's house. I don't think about bringing my little dude.
Get some shots up, Get some buckets, Get some buckets.

Doug Gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. I want you to
listen to something. Okay. This is Bruce Arians on the
Rich Eisen Show on Fox Sports Radio earlier today, talking
(52:33):
about his decision to get back into coaching after year off.
Happily I got a complete physical on my interview first
time ever and was really glad to do it and
completely big clean bill of health and uh, but no,
Byron Leftwich will be calling the plays off obviously have
a big hand in it and uh and be on
their with it. But you know, train Harrold Going and
Byron Leftwich the last few years to handle that job,
(52:57):
and I feel very very comfortable with them. Um. So,
Bruce Arians is Bruce Arians is telling you that M
Bruce Arians are saying, hey, look, I can't call plays anymore,
but year off after retiring from football, and I'm good.
I'm back. Gary Kubiak, who twice has passed out on
(53:23):
the sidelines, is gonna come back and be the offensive
coordinating for the Denver Broncos. The point is that, like, look,
here's a couple of guys, and Arians had a TV career.
Kubiak is was in the front office with the Broncos.
They're probably not as well off as Urban Meyer, you know,
(53:43):
making seven million dollars a year, and Herb Meier's made
you know, seven figures for likely the last ah fifteen years.
Like Herb's got a deeper bank account, a better bank roll,
and Arians and Kobiak app that said, the point is,
(54:05):
here's two guys where health took them away from football,
but football brought them back to football. And I think
the one difference would be this is the one kind
of caveat is. Kubiak, of course was at the Broncos,
so he was around all the time, and Arians was
covering the games for CBS. And I've told people that
(54:26):
you like, if you really want to get away from football,
don't cover football. You're gonna want to get back in
that locker room. Nothing makes you want to be even
the losing team locker room. Like calling a game, if
you do a studio studio, there's a little bit of
a disconnect. You know, you don't feel the vibe, you
don't talk to the coaches, you don't have the same energy,
(54:47):
you don't smell the grass and the sweat, you don't
get the emotions of it, you know everything. It's you're
just watching the sport in a TV and this kind
of a disconnect. If you go to games, you're gonna
want to coach those games. And here's two guys whose
health took them away from football, and football brought them
back to football. Now I do I think that? Uh do?
(55:12):
I think it's a little bit different with Arians because
Arians was probably fired as much as his health is
sure right, And Arians is also like, well, I'm not
gonna call plays. How many times you've seen a play
caller go like, I'm not gonna call plays. Then the
second something goes wrong, he's like, you know what I'm
gonna do. I'm gonna call plays again. And Kubiak, I guess,
is not going to have the stress and strain of
(55:32):
having to do the weekly press conferences and be head coach,
but you're still gonna be the play caller and offensive cording.
There's no no more obvious sign that those guys well,
that that Urban Meyer might not be done than those
guys not being done because they've both been successful, they
both made some money, they both had good jobs, and
(55:53):
they've both showned those good jobs for the best jobs,
which is actually coaching a team. Yes, right, music, Do
you think another coach out there, not in the NFL,
but Bob Stoops Do you think he's also done done? Look?
I I don't. Yes, I think Stoopis has done done,
(56:13):
and I think there's a good chance Urban's done done
as well. Urban twice over has had this. Those college
guys made so much money. Now SC is going to
this Clay Hilton things now all of a sudden back
to becoming looking like a disaster again, losing Cliff Kingsbury
and the mess that that becomes there. Let's see how
they fix it. But um, SC is gonna throw a
(56:35):
bunch of money at somebody, probably both of those two guys,
to come try and be their head coach the second
that they think they can get rid of Clay Hilton,
But I everyone I talked to you about Stoops is like, dude,
he's done. He made a ton of money. You know,
Stoops his wife was selling Avon while he's coaching, like
(56:57):
a million dollars, like making a million dollars years selling Avon.
And you might say to yourself, like, well, why does
that matter? All matters because they've made enough money where
they don't have to do anything anymore. It's the same
reason that people believe, you know, Brady's wife has pushed
him away, like you don't need any money. I have
(57:17):
more money than It's a wait reason Calvin Johnson quit
the sport. It's a really, really really hard lifestyle, you know,
just not conducive. Have you seen this Frank Reich picture?
Where have you guys seen it? It shows him on
NFL network nils and then talking about the comeback, the bills,
(57:40):
thirty one point come back whatever, and then it shows
him today. It's like twenty years later. He had jet
black hair, cleanly shaven, tan, good looking. Showed him today
at his press conference. He's got white hair, white beard,
looks sixty years old. Like, dude, it's a hard gig.
(58:01):
Is a hard gig, hard gig to continue to be
And I don't really I kind of don't understand it
because you know, look, you got the training room, you
got workout, you got your workout. Like if if I'm
one of those guys, I get up and I'm watching film,
I'm doing it while I'm doing an elliptical while I'm
working out. You know, I'm using my time wisely. But
(58:25):
they started drinking coffee and making game plans and making calls,
and all of a sudden, they started adding on they're
eating with football players and they're adding on football player calories.
What do you think is the more taxing between college
football and NFL, because to me, it looks like college
because of the recruiting. Well, it's not just it's not
everybody says recruiting, but it's not just the recruiting. It's
(58:48):
the managing of everything, like you're literally managing everything everything,
whereas in the NFL you're coaching you know, you're just
coaching ball and you have their their professionals and if
they don't keep up their end of the bargain. And look,
this is one of the reasons that they do so
much research into quarterbacks and off the field stuff because
(59:11):
you know, those quarterbacks have no That's why the Mike
Vick thing or you know Ben Rothisberger's got in trouble
for Jamis Winston. Right, those are the exceptions, and you
just can't be a quarterback. But when you can trust
your quarterback. Most of these guys are super boring. Andrew
(59:31):
Luck boring, um pick out Tom Brady boring, Drew Brees boring,
Russell Wilson boring, like people pick apart Russell Wilson because
he's too much of a nerd. He's too much of
a dork. Like here, he married a star, is a
(59:53):
legit star, right, and I kind of think it hurts
her rep more than helps his, Like man Russell Wilson
a dork his but that's what works at the profession.
You know, Johnny Manzel was super fun, really cool out
of the NFL, like before he was even in the NFL.
(01:00:15):
Out of the NFL. Honestly, Baker Mayfield, like people have
compared him Baker Mayfield. You know though he has some
swag that do work hard. This craft, he's kind of
got he I'll bet he's a lot more boring in
reality than in perception. Because one time in Arkansas, he
was drinking and the cops try to bring him in
(01:00:36):
for public in talks, and they caught him and cuffed
him and stuffed him. Right, just aren't party dudes that
are quarterbacks in the NFL. That's that's what happens on TV.
That's not what happens in reality. So when you can
trust your quarterback to be a grown up, and you
can trust your coaches to be grown ups in your
(01:00:58):
offensive line to be grown up, you know, you've got
a couple of cornerbacks, you know, maybe you have a
linebacker who's a crazy person, right, like like a Vontez
Perfect might be a crazy person, a pac Man Jones
might be a crazy person. You got one or two
of those guys. You gotta manage on a football team.
But even that, that's not your that's not really your job.
(01:01:20):
It's the the GM is the guy who brings in
the players. Do you work canon hand? Yeah, but you've
got a whole staff of player acquisition guys. That's their
job to worry about those guys. So yeah, And being
a head coach in college seems to be a lot
more taxing in terms of your time and your energy
and your focus and wearing you down. But it's a
job now? Is that? Actually? I just like randomly thought
(01:01:43):
of this because we're actually on TV watching Matt Lafleur
young guy, and is are coaching jobs becoming more of
a young man's job because of how taxing it is. Uh,
could there be something there with that? Because I'm there.
I also think there's a related You gotta there's a
aid ability, uh, you know to the player. You know that. Um,
(01:02:08):
I think there's something there to it. I mean, like, look,
Anthony Lynde's doing a great job. He's not young, he's
got a white beard, and he's doing an amazing job.
Bill Belichick is not young, and he's doing an amazing
job of being relatable. So I I don't know. I
think part of it it's the candidate pool and the
idea of the retread. Now retread hires have become one
that we roll our eyes at, Like I've seen that guy.
(01:02:29):
I don't want to want to see that guy again.
I want something new, I want something fresh, I want
a different perspective. So I think it's more of that
than the actual health. Yes, John Romans, I think it's funny.
It's cyclical to me because ten years ago you were
hearing that he's too young, he can't coache. They won't
respect him. They won't respect the young guy that the players,
the NFL, or any players of any professional support, And
now it's the opposite, like, hey, he relates to him,
(01:02:51):
he's young. Like there. It's quite funny, how just I'm
probably ten years from now I'll go back to being
the way it was, older guys with much more respect.
I also think though, that there's something to the guys
are making the hires. They want somebody who's younger than
them because they want you know, you want a you
you want the coach to be under the control of
the president or the general manager. Right, there's something to
that as well. Do I think it's all related? Yeah? Yeah,
(01:03:16):
Do I think there's some ages? Im sure? Do I
think it's cyclical? Yes? And you're right, John, And look,
there's going to be one of these young guys that
the players don't respect, but there's old guys that the
players don't respect. That has to be what happened in Arizona, right,
Hugh Jackson did not get the buy in from the players,
and Hugh Jackson was seen as a really good offensive
(01:03:38):
coordinator and had been a head coach before, and you
know what, seemed like a super likable guy, and is
Hugh Jackson went in the mid fifties. I'm gonna go
I'm gonna go early fifties for Hugh Jackson's gonna go
fifty two for Hugh Jackson. What's without looking? So the
(01:04:00):
point is, um, I looked, I look and I was like,
all right, Like, Hugh Jackson checks a bunch of boxes,
been ahead coach before, been an offensive coordinator, been in
that division, worked well with quarterbacks like, he's all of
these different things. And as a retread hire, it didn't work,
(01:04:20):
didn't work, and the guys didn't respect him enough. So
my thing is, I've always said this that you can't
fool players, right, It's always been a belief of mine.
You can't fool players. And by that, I mean you
can get in front, they'll they'll smell a phony a
mile away. If you don't know what you're talking about,
you'll get exposed. You'll get exposed. Let's um, let's get
(01:04:46):
you to Ralph Herban, Ralph Wood. What's go? What else
going on? Well? Battle of FLOORA just are wrapping up
and talking to the media, which he was doing for
quite a while. He used the new head coach for
the Green Bay Packers. Earlier, Cliff king Insbury met the
media in Arizona and as a part of that discussion
you mentioned the dumpster fire at Southern cal. It actually
(01:05:08):
did come out by uh Michael Bidwell that Cliff had
resigned from SC in order to do the interviews with
the Jets and the Cardinals, so they weren't gonna get
to talk to him as long as he was coaching
as a part of the staff with the Trojans, which
he never but he did. He did help them in recruiting.
I actually think he helped them more than he hurt
(01:05:28):
them during his short tenure there. Well, it really actually
that they solidified their recruiting class because of But there's
still a signing day to come, and who knows how
well they'll finish up with that second signing day coming
in February. UM Cleveland Browns still expected to announce Freddie
Kitchens as their new head coach, have not done it
officially yet. They did relieve Greg Williams of his duties,
(01:05:51):
also removed a bunch of assistants from that staff. The
Denver Broncos bringing in Chicago defensive coordinator Vic Fangio as
their new head coach. He is set to go and
says that he's gonna win a Super Bowl with Denver.
Gary Kubiak will come down and be the new Broncos
offensive coordinators. Still three vacancies in the NFL, Miami, Cincinnati,
(01:06:12):
and the New York Jets. Former Oregon football player Doug
Brenner is suing the university, current Florida State head coach
Willie Taggert, the school's former strength coach, and the n
c double A for negligent stemming from a hospital hospitalization
incident after Oregon offseason workouts resulted in him having rabd
(01:06:34):
do myolysis and other injuries. He's seeking eleven point five
million dollars in that lawsuit and one other note from
the NFL it Sanks headquarters. Tuesday, four armed guards entered
the locker room with Sean Payton wheeling in the Lombardi
Trophy and two thousand dollars in cash. Peyton nasked, y'all
(01:06:55):
want this win three f and games. Needless to say
the locker room or out to it in yes, two
or twenty five thousand dollars is the Super Bowl bonus
for each player. That's nice. That's nice. Nice to I'll
move right there there you go right by the way.
By the way Sean paid when he got that job
was to play college with the Dallas Cowboys. It had
(01:07:15):
never been a head coach before. It was super I
was super young. Well exactly so is that might be
where the trend really started. But we'll get back to
you in ten seconds for first word from farmers. From
a dog accidentally flooding a living room to a dog
taking a joy ride, we've covered it. Talk to farmers,
we know a thing or two because we've seen a

back to you. Well, speaking of games this upcoming weekend,
you know there's there's this thing the week we fall
in love with the fulls magic deal. Now, it should
be pointed out that the Bears were six point with
six point favorites, was six in a hook six point
(01:07:58):
favorites over the Eagles last week, and of course they
were a forty three yard or away from winning that game,
but not covering the spread. That said, Vegas doesn't believe
in magic tricks. What they believe in is trying to
find a line somewhere where you can generate interest on
(01:08:21):
both sides, right, interest on both sides. And the New
Orleans Saints are eight point favorites, eight eight, eight point
favorites at home. Granted, Saints have had a week off,
and they're better in the Dome than they are on
the road. But we've we've fallen into this kind of
(01:08:42):
trap of like man folds magic. The end the NFL
A home game is home field advantages three two, maybe
three and a half points, Okay, three to three and
a half points. They're saying this team is substantially better
(01:09:03):
than Nick Foles. It's like, do we remember the Nick
Foles touchdown pass to what that that put him ahead? Yes?
Why I don't remember the two interceptions. It's like, literally,
no one has ever even remarked that, how do we
not remember the interceptions? We don't um And it's a
(01:09:24):
Saint's defense, which has found a way to generate turnovers,
has a good pass rush, has had a week off
against Vegas is telling you they're not buying the Nick
Foles magic. You might be buying anybody. Oh, it's just
they're hot, and when he's hot, they're hot. But the
reality is, there's a reason that Bears fans are up
(01:09:45):
in arms over Cody Parker's miss field goal because they
should have went. They should have won that game, right,
There's a reason that Bears fans are up in arms
for Matt n Aggie not calling a time out earlier
in the defense possessions they had more time, should have
in that game. No, let me go back. She lost
the Falcons two years ago in the playoffs, two seasons ago.
(01:10:09):
Whatever in the playoffs. Should have It doesn't take away
from he has made some throws. No one said he's terrible.
He's looked bad at times. The difference between a great
quarterback and a good quarterback is the percentage of times
in which they're terrible. Right, like Brady's Brady's misfiring more now.
(01:10:37):
It wasn't like he'd never misfired in the past. He didn't.
He didn't complete a hundred percent of his passes. You
know what this reminds me of when my son first
started playing flag football. Okay, he was he's nine now,
so he was like five years older in Connecticut, and uh,
(01:10:58):
my job there. It's the same show. It was three
to six Eastern time. It was in New York City,
so I didn't get home until seven fift so I
was literally never at practice. And I go to the
game and the coaches clearly didn't know what they were doing,
right they And I asked the guys they played growing up, like,
well we played rugby. Its like that's a different sport. Anyway,
(01:11:20):
we get down with the first game and he got
the ball like twice and he's in tears. He's in tears,
and I was like, what the matter, dude, you guys
just won. There were no spectacular plays the entire game.
I was like, dude, listen, you realize that when they
when you watch YouTube. Because he only watched football with
(01:11:42):
YouTube and best catches ever, he thought that happened every
play of every game. Like, no, that's not actually way
real football works. Real football can be super super super boring.
If you watch every play and up to the left
and out to the right, play action, hit to check down, guy,
move the sticks, you know, first and ten, All right,
(01:12:05):
we're gonna hit some mount in the flat. We're gonna
hit something over the middle. We're gonna dink, We're gonna dunk,
We're gonna push our way, and then there's an explosive play.
The best quarterbacks don't complete se of their passes, so
I means three out of ten fall by the wayside.
(01:12:26):
The point is that Nick Foles is not terrible. He's
not five out of ten. Hey, He's somewhere in the
six out of ten. And more times than other quarterbacks,
he will throw it to the other team, or he
will look slightly inaccurate, or he will throw it to
a guy who may catch the ball but not have
the ability to catch and run because of where he
puts the football. Folds runs hot or cold. Fools has
(01:12:48):
some ability. He's not Carson Wentz, and Vegas is like,
we're calling your bluff. We think whatever Fools magic there
is runs out. When you go to New Orleans, take
out a team that's had time off, that's pretty good defensively,
really good offensively, and Folds will have to win you
a game. Remember, you only scored sixteen a game, only
scored sixteen last game and should have lost to a
(01:13:10):
team that has a second year quarterback who's alas, who's
widely an accurate, wildly and accurate. All right. I don't
know how much you pay attention to social media, but
apparently something that Jason Smith said last night as turned
Baker Mayfield off. Because Jason Smith believes that Baker Mayfield
(01:13:31):
is turning off qualified head coaches. We'll play for you

what I think that's up coming next to The Doug

maximize your refund at tax layer dot com every day
at this time every day. This time, we'd like to
play for you a portion of a show previously on
Fox Sport Trade or Fox Sports. Why don't we call it?
Here's what Jason Smith said. That's an all night show.
(01:14:33):
Jason Smith said about the Browns and why their coaching
job was not as coveted as others. Coaching Baker Mayfield
is not something that appeals to the successful head coach.
Coaching Baker Mayfield is something that appeals to someone who
needs a chance somewhere to be a head coach and
may not get it anywhere else. Right, here's what Baker
(01:14:57):
Mayfield already has killed. One coach killed, Hugh Jackson. Right.
Not that Hugh Jackson was great, Hugh Jackson was bad.
If I'm a head coach like Mike McCarthy or Bruce
Arians or someone who can get a job someplace else,
even Matt Lafleur, anybody else, I see this job and
I go, do I really want this job? Because if
I get this job, I am signing up to be
(01:15:19):
in the Baker Mayfield Show. Baker Mayfield has already proven
to be the most powerful person in that organization. He's
got one coach fired already, and whatever it is. Everybody
is all in behind him and his cock sure attitude
and looks Baker Mayfield brought the Browns two incredible heights
this year. When you used to one win a year,
getting around five hundred is a phenomenal accomplishment. And he
is really good. But if I'm ahead, I walk in
(01:15:41):
going what am I getting myself into? If we don't
get along, what's gonna happen? There's a lot to that. Okay, Now, look,
not everything that Jason said do I disagree with. But
let's start with the premise. Okay. The premise of of
his argument was that success full head coaches would stay away. Okay, Well,
(01:16:03):
successful he coaches are on the market, right, like, give
me the success, give me the guy who's the who
is the home run higher that's available in the in
the NFL? Who is it? Almost ahead? You're saying something,
who is it? I guess Mike McCarthy would be the
only one. Maybe, Okay, alright, but as Mike McCarthy a
super like if Mike McCarthy might be staying away, but look,
(01:16:23):
Mike McCarthy staying away also for other reasons. The reason
people thought Mike McCarthy is you have a general manager
who was in Green Bay and there's a relationship there
and McCarthy is like, thanks, no, thanks. I think he's
accurate from this perspective. I don't think it's successful he coaches.
I think if you go into Cleveland, it is not
(01:16:44):
the best available job. It was not the best available job.
I actually thought the Jets were the best available job
because you have an outstanding young quarterback, you had ninety
million dollars in cash space, you have a general manager
who is also he's got to do some stuff to
keep his job, like everybody's motivated, and if things if,
if it doesn't go right, there'll be another general manager
before there's another head coach, and you get to shape
(01:17:08):
a team however you'd like. Although the green Bay Packers
are a very good job, but look green Bay. You
could say the same thing like if you go in
there and you fail, Mark Murphy is not going anywhere.
Brian Guencuns guonen Kun's who's been there as their general manageries,
he's not going anywhere. If you don't succeed in green Bay,
(01:17:30):
you're getting fired. And that's if you want to say
that about Baker Mayfield. I agree this thing was there
already by their estimation, achieving great things. They have their quarterback,
they have the general manager. So if the coach comes
in and screws it up, it's the coach's fault. That
part I'll agree with. But I don't know if successful
(01:17:50):
head coaches are staying away from Baker Mayfield because of
Baker Mayfield swag. I think the same number that would
want to pass that job but want it because they
know he's accurate, they know he's mature as a football player,
they know he's tough, he's a good leader, and then
he can process things as opposed to some other teams
don't have a quarterback. I look, beggars can't be choosers.
(01:18:15):
If you're on the market and don't have a job,
you're if you're gonna take one. There's there was only
what aid available, So one you have to find somebody
who wants you, and then you gotta find So my
way of of wording it is different. I would say
it's not it wasn't the best job because he's right.
Baker Mayfield has now become the Lebron James of Cleveland.
(01:18:36):
He's the most powerful athlete in Cleveland. And if it
doesn't work. Baker is not taking the blame you are.
On the other hand, they got a lot of players.
Baker is a pretty good quarterback. He should get better
as he learns more. And the Steelers are a mess.
I'm not buying the Ravens offense with Lamar Jackson and
Cincinnati's in reboot mode. Here's Nick right talking about the
(01:19:01):
Colts taking on his Chiefs. I trust Mahomes more, but
that is not a slight on Luck. So let me
just say something about Luck, because I Luck is a
guy that I got really wrong early on in that
I saw. I knew what his draft profile was and
he was going towards it. And then after year three
he seemed to get worse and tail off, and I
(01:19:22):
didn't know the extent of his injury, and I was
highly critical of him. And now that we see that
he's healthy, who he is the guy he was looking
like he was going to be after year three, which
is one of the very best quarterbacks in football. So
that was something I got wrong on Luck. And this
isn't an indictment on Luck at all. But Patrick Mahomes
been the best player in the NFL this year, and
he's at home and the team is the healthiest it's
(01:19:42):
been all season, and he's going to have the fullest
compliment of weapons. He's had absent Kaream Hunt since Week
one of the season. And I think they have a
tactical as far as schematic edge with Andy Reid. For
all those reasons, I trust Patrick Mahomes even though it's
his first career playoffs start, and I know there's a
long list of quarterbacks that have struggled in their first
(01:20:04):
career playoffs start. And look, the Cancer Chiefs have struggled
games at home, games at home. Um. Look. I agree
with him that they're finally getting healthy. But I also
think that not having Kareem Hunt is in fact a
big thing. I think the weather and the level of
competition is a big thing. If you give me who
do you trust? I don't think it's close to say
(01:20:24):
Andrew Luck, because though Luck has been turnover prone in
his career, he understands the difference in regular season and postseason,
as opposed to Mahomes, who he didn't play in big
games in college. He didn't played the playoffs in college
and playing big tall championship game in college, we didn't
and and he hasn't valued the ball enough in big
(01:20:45):
games in the NFL. I agree, he's the NFL's m
v P. But playoffs are different and no look passes
and thrown across your body generally doesn't work in the playoffs,
no matter how talented Brett Farve you are. Which makes
for a great weekend. All right, we have a great
(01:21:07):
show for you. In our third hour of the show, upcoming,
Devin Booker from the Suns will join us. We'll get
his thoughts on where his team is kind of a
wild journey right where they can't win and they can't
lose and they can't win again. We're gonna we're gonna
ask him about this man, Dude, it's gonna be hard.
It's gonna be hard to win ten games. But he
is by all estimations of super talent. And of course
(01:21:29):
they just went out and beat the Sacramento Kings. We're
gonna ask Devin Booker about this season. Plus Great Coast
Cell will break down for us. How will did Dak
Prescott actually play? The Chargers game plan seemed outstanding against
the Baltimo Ravens. How do they match up against the Patriots?
(01:21:51):
I know, yeah, By the way, can the Rams fix
their offensive line during their week off? And can the
kans City Chiefs stop anybody? How do the Philadelphia Eagles?
How the Philadelphia Eagles slow down the New Orleans Saints offense?
We got a lot of questions. We hope Greg's co
sell has a bunch of the answers, and we'll continue
(01:22:12):
to react to all the coaching hirings as only what
two jobs are open? Bengal's job is open and the
Jets job is open, And it feels like we're getting
closer and closer to the potential from Mike McCarthy to
get the Jets job, although hasn't happened yet, so who
knows what happens alright, Devin Booker from the Suns will
join us. Thank Greg Cosell from NFL Films to join us.

I didn't ask you to do it in between the

in like three and a half hours. So they play
in Dallas. Take it on, Luke, Luca, don Chick. I
want to get his thoughts. Deandretan has been playing great
(01:23:37):
the Phoenix Suns rookie at least statistically great. Um, so
we'll we'll catch up with the young I'm gonna say star,

So uh oh is there a cool Devin Booker joining
us about three and a half hours for the game.
We're not throwing you out of your routine, are you. No,
I'm out tonight, so so so we're all good. Well,
you're not playing. What's the matter with you? Your your
back's hurt, right, Yeah, carrying a franchise really hurts you.
But I'm kidding, Devin Booked Devin Devin Booker joining us. Okay,
(01:24:22):
So when honest question, right, when an NBA star his
back hurts, Like, how bad? Does it hurt? Like you
can't bend over? Or is it just if I'm playing
the twisting and the turning and the torsion on my back. Um,
it's more about the twisting and turning. Uh. I mean
when it first happened, couldn't bend over. But you know,
(01:24:42):
treatments improving it every day. So it's taking the day
at a time. I think I'll be back out there
no time. Are you familiar with the baseball term wins
above replacement? No, I'm not. Okay, it's basically a statistical Uh.
It's a way of of evaluating how important you are
based upon what the team would be like if you
weren't playing. I gotta point out you don't play. They
(01:25:04):
beat the Kings, any correlation. It could be Booker out
the Sun's role. What's what's it like? Look, dude, you're
you're a super competitive guy, and I know it's a process,
but I'm sure you thought, hey, do we got the
number one pick last year? We should be further along.
What's it like for you to suffer through the season
where you're being recognized for your performances, but the wins
(01:25:27):
and losses haven't been there yet. I mean, I think
the wins and losses, you know, as part of my responsibility. UM.
So you know, it's hard being a competitor, um and
obviously not being in the position that we want to
be right now. Um. But the thing about the n
b A, you know, if you look around and it's
not me. Teams that you know are just put together
(01:25:48):
right away and the media success, you know, besides the
Warriors when kid you joined, but they were born the
championship two years prior so, and I think, you know,
we just have to stay the course, um, and see
the improved mints and stay consistent with the improvements and
we'll be in pretty good shape. All right. What what
is deandret and doing better now that he didn't do
(01:26:08):
when he first started playing this year, Uh, pretty much everything, UM,
and he knows that. And he's the type of kid
that that wants to get better. UM. So you know
after practices or when he messes up, you know, he
knows when he messes up, UM and corrects it. So
you know, I've seen it before in situations where people
(01:26:28):
mess up and have no idea what they're messing up.
That's when the problem starts. But you know, he corrects
every game. He gets better defensively, offensively every game he's taken,
you know, tremendous strides. What is it? What's what's the
next step? What's the next step? In Deandrew? Some people
remember the only critique of him coming out was as
big as he is and as athletic as he is,
(01:26:49):
he's not as effective defensively as he could be. How's
his defense this early in his career. I think it's,
you know, far above where he's supposed to be. UM.
Just picking up all the NBA schemes and being able
to move, you know, when you're guarding guards. You know,
the NBA today is you know, trying to develop a mismatch.
(01:27:09):
UM setting to pick a roll his man and you know,
trying to go at you know, bigger defenders that can't
move the feet, but DeAndre doesn't have that problem. Um,
he can move just like a guard. I think you
know once he figures out place teams, you know two
or three times that you know he'll start picking up
on the schemes and playing people's tendencies. How much harder
(01:27:30):
is it for you when now you are for the
last I don't know, a year and a half or so,
Devin Booker joining us, everybody saw your potential. Now you're
putting up the points, so the number one on everybody's
board when they come into prep for the Phoenix sentences.
We gotta slow down, we gotta shut down, Devin Booker,
How much more difficult is it for you now that
you are the go to guy, but you're also the
(01:27:51):
go to guy for other teams best defender? I mean
you you know nothing's gonna be easy going into the game. Um,
and that the team sport, and you know it's played
five on five. So for every defensive coverage, you know
that a team hatch for you, there's gonna be an
opening or you know what what they want us to do?
(01:28:13):
Forces into that and I think we're figuring it out now, Um,
figuring out the spacing you know when teams use traps
or double teams, you know the spacing where to be,
you know, to get those open shots and create advantage
for our team. All right, I know you didn't you
didn't play I think last time either when you guys
played Dallas. But you've seen Don Check and you know
how they're they're prepping for him. He made Josh Hart,
(01:28:33):
he made Josh hartfall down and get you get that
little kind of off hand MJ push. Uh, how do
you guard? How do you guard Don Check? Who's he's
has a big dude, he's also super skilled. If you're
out there and you're checking to night, what what are
the keys and guardian? I think you know it's no
secret that you know his step back and let's go
to move right now? Um. I mean if you watch them,
(01:28:55):
it's it's usually going less. Um. But he you know,
when you're when you're in b A, you know there's
players are so talented where you know you just try
to slow him down, you know, And I think he
has potentially to be one of those players. But you
know there's they're a scouting report for everybody. So you know,
I think you see that stepback, you know, shot every time,
you know, you go on social media, so you know,
(01:29:17):
just be ready for it to be ready to you know,
he's always gonna be attacking and making a play for somebody.
Devin Booker joining us in the Dug Out Lip Show
here on Fox Sports Trader kind of same. You guys
had Kemba a couple of nights ago. Keimba's is a
little bit. He's got that nasty crossover and step back,
but it's it's it's different because it's more explosive. He
used his feet as opposed to don't use his body, right,
all right, And kim was a lot quicker, smaller, and
(01:29:41):
more sifty. But you know they're they're both really talented
players that are obviously hard to stop. Um. Kimba is
a free agent. There's been There's just there's just recruiting
going on in the NBA, right, Like, so do you recruit?
Do you guys recruit in game? Is there any whispering
in ears that that has taken place in game? I
wouldn't say in game, you know, I think you know
(01:30:03):
when you see people, um, when they're in situations that
you know they're not completely happy with. UM. I mean,
do you know what's coming up and free agent is
coming up in their free agent and their small conversation. Um.
But but no tampering, nothing, nothing, nothing along those lines. Yeah.
No tampering is one has done out kind of in public, right,
not really in private. If you're just like, yo, do
(01:30:24):
we want I'd love to play with you, that's not
like you know, behind the scenes, it's not really all right.
Here's a question I think everybody wants to know. Um.
Is there ever a time in which you feel like
the substitutions at the end of the game, like, hey man, wait,
why am I coming out because it benefits the team
to take you out so that you don't win to
help the draft position? Does that? Has that ever happened? No? No,
(01:30:48):
that that that's never happened. Um. I'm usually in the game, uh,
going down the stretch. I've never been taken out, um
to purpose to lose or anything like that. Who's the
guy who gives you the most difficulty defensively? Defensively? UM,
I have to say I wouldn't say a certain player.
(01:31:09):
I say playing against the Clippers usually especially when they
had like when they had DeAndre Dourdan on the team,
you know, they did a good job of you know,
containing me, using traps and force me, you know into
length with DeAndre do on that. Yeah, we got that
massive rim protector, that massive length. That's uh, that's that's
really uh last thing. You know, there's this there's this
(01:31:31):
assumption from fans that everything's three in d right, that
everything's shoot threes or get to the hoop and look
hardened hard and obviously plays that way. But I've seen
you in workouts, I know you in your game in
that a lot like Kevin Durant, right, whether it's like
catching it at the elbow or seventeen feet away. The
ability to get the ball in that mid range and
(01:31:51):
just be a bucket getter, be a bucket collector. Um.
How important is that to the best and the best
of the game to still be able to have a
go to two in shot not just rely on the three.
I think it's very important, especially you know, moving forward, um,
having playoff folk and dreams. Um. You know, I think
the whole NBA feels like the most efficient shots, you
(01:32:13):
know are our dunks and three pointers. Um. So they
try to force team into taking those mid range shots.
But you know, if the team has somebody that can
consistently knock those down and are comfortable with those shots,
and you know it's kind of hard to guard, um,
especially you know, using using like a pick and roll.
How far away are the suns? I think a lot
(01:32:35):
closer than people expect, um, But you know that's that's
in the house for us. UM. I mean, we have
our goals, um, and you know, our dreams and aspirations
that we're working towards. And you know we're gonna work
towards those. You know, every day of the NBA's a
long season, um, and you can go on streets, Um,
you can get hot. One thing can click, and it
(01:32:56):
can it can turn overnight, you know, So so every night,
every day, you know, yes, per examples, when you guys
went in and beat the Celtics and Brad Stevens like, look,
they're playing well, they're actually a really good team. By
the way, I want to point out the guy who
defensive skiing defensive guy gives you most troubles, DeAndre Jordan's
he plays for the Mavericks. You're not playing tonight. I
don't know if your back is really hurt. I'll take
(01:33:16):
your word for it, because you've always been a man
of your word. I'm I'm kidding you. Thanks so much
for joining us. Feel better very soon. We appreciate being
our guest on Fox Sports Radio. I appreciate it. Thanks
for having me. But that's that's Devin Booker, who's playing
an absolute all star level since December fifteenth. He's averaging
twenty seven seven assists, with those assists leading to seventeen
(01:33:37):
assist points created per game forty four points scored assisted
per games since December, is the third most in the NBA,
behind James Harden and Russell Westbro crazy that dude is
a great player and people forget when he came out
only nineteen years old, only twenty two now, but obviously
doesn't want to play against DeAndre Jordan's We we we
agree on that. Ramos like it sounds like, yeah, Buyer
(01:34:01):
is good enough to come to work, but he knew
I was going to be in studio today, So buy
or suddenly think, did any of you guys send did
you guys send Buyer a text on pulp fiction? You
have to watch pulp fiction or not come back? I
did not. I told Ramos too. He just refuses to
do it. I will if you like, No, I mean
I I was trying to come from you, I think, uh,
(01:34:23):
Dan Buyer, Okay, I'll put Ramos on this too, Okay,
what do you want? What do you guys want? On
this text music? Dan, You're not allowed back until you
watch pulp fiction. Dear Dan, Dear dear Dan. Okay. And
for people don't know, Dan Buyer of course has his
own show on Sunday mornings. It's been extended to an
hour stend in an hour one week and Alice and
he's sick. It mean's alluded to work. No, and he
(01:34:44):
usually joined us throughout the show, given us our updates. Um,
Dear Dan, has Danny is the least what's the word
I'm looking for? It's a good question, at least cinematically
cinematically challenge. He's not cinematically like, he has no desire
to watch films, doesn't really care, doesn't care, doesn't know
(01:35:08):
anything like look, hasn't seen pulp fiction. And he's what
is he forty? I think turn he just turned forty,
I think forty one. Whatever. He's of like that prime
age where he should be all the same movies that
most of us have watched that are in our early
to mid thirties, the early to mid forties. He should
(01:35:28):
be like, yes, I've seen it, Yes, I've seen it. Yes,
I've seen it, and he's like, Nope, nope, nope, nope, nope.
So we've decided he has to watch pulp fiction before
he returns from being sick. I don't know what that
word is. Also know that the group text I'll read
it to you him or come up next? Great, Go
South NFL Films joins the show. I'll ask Kim about
some of these new head coaches. What does he see
(01:35:51):
from Matt Lafloor with the Titans that leads into believe
that he can get Aaron Rodgers on track? Plus, how
do the Cowboys match up with that Rams offense? How
the Eagles match up with the Saints offense? Who knows
more than Greg co Sell No one, but you'll know
as much because he joins us next. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show week
days at noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports

We've covered him. Talk to farmers. We know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing or two. We
are farmers under written my farmer's truck, Fire insurance exchanges
and affiliates products unavailable in every state. Car shopping can
be confusing with terms like dealer price, list price, and
(01:36:34):
invoice price. True Car shows what other people paid for
the car you want, so you can recognize a good
price when you're ready to buy a new or used car.
Visit True Car and they enjoy more confident car buying experience.
Oh my god, Twitter is amazing. Um, he's going to
join us to the great costell join us at a moment.
Let me just okay. So apparently Stephen A. Smith went
on a rant about Cliff Kingsbury being a better candidate
(01:36:55):
to be the Bachelor than to be the head coach
of a football team. This is from the eras Zona
Cardinals Twitter. Handle you ready for it? We thought you
would be in a good mood since the Chargers activated
Hunter Henry this week. That's in there. That's amazing. That
is that is amazing, amazing stuff. All right, let's get
(01:37:17):
to Gregg Coastal, who, of course, uh works for NFL films.
You can see him on the NFL Matchup Show, does
an amazing job for essentially forty years, He's broken down
films for a living and taught the world what's really
going on inside the nation football. He he joins us
every week here on the Doug out Lip Show. I
want to start with Matt Lafleur. Uh, look Shanna with
Shannahan for a year, with former quarterback in his own right,
(01:37:39):
with McVeigh for a year. This year he had his
own team and outsiders would say, hey, look, they're like,
you know, bottom five in the league on offense, he's
the offensive coordin or how does that work? You've seen
him on You've seen the Titans on tape. Know what
they had in terms of personnel. What are your thoughts
on Matt Lafleur blending with the Green Bay Packers, most
(01:37:59):
notably Air and Row Well, I think that, Doug, there's
two answers to that. I think when you hire mettal Floor,
you're hiring a philosophy of offense because his background and
his influences are Kyle Shanahan and Sean McVeigh. So you're
hiring a philosophy of offense that you believe is effective
in the NFL, and it's shown to be effective in
the NFL. I think the second part of that question
(01:38:21):
is how does that fit with the Packers and Aaron Rodgers? Um?
You know, I think the one thing about La Fleur
and that background is it's very structured. It's very timing
and rhythm based, and I think that will there will
be some conversations between Matto Flora and Aaron Rodgers because
Aaron Rodgers, as great as he is and as great
(01:38:42):
as he can be in any given game, often plays
outside of structure and often plays outside of structure when
there's no need to play outside of structure, and that
kind of approach does not sit well with the believers
in that offensive school of thought. Uh, let's give me fascinated.
Yes it is. Yeah, will you if you play within
(01:39:02):
the offense, you could be successful. But he hasn't played
within the offense. You call it its structure. Um, alright,
So in terms of the style of what Cliff Kingsbury,
you know, what he's done, has that is that what
others are running? Will that work in the nashvilleball legue? Well,
I think there's a couple of issues there, and I
think that kind of style of offenses in some ways
(01:39:24):
diametrically opposed to the sort of Kyle Shanahan, Sean mcveigm
Att Lafleur that's based more on you run individual plays.
The defense isn't really that important. And I've spoken to
people who have been on Mike Leach's staff when he
was a Texas tech and ran the air raid, and
that's what Cliff Kingsbury's background is in that they don't
even worry about the defense. They call plays. And again
(01:39:48):
that's a philosophy. Whether that works in the NFL, I
guess we're going to find out. Uh. The other thing
I would really make sure that I do in Arizona,
And I don't know if that's going to be up
to up to Cliff Kingsbury or to the front office,
but I think offensive line and an offensive line coach
becomes critical because a lot of those offenses in college
do not really deal with multiple protection schemes, and you
(01:40:10):
must do that in the NFL. It's it's fasting. I've
I've seen I've I've heard other people point that out,
but I've never heard anyone point out as to why
the offensive line becomes uh so much more important that
that gives great context to It's Doug Otlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Um, I know he's a Leech
air raid guy, but he's also you know, work with Houston.
(01:40:31):
He played in the nash Football League. Are there no
has he has he built up his own kind of
style outside of Leech's style or does he go ahead?
I don't know him personally, so I can't answer that.
I you know, from what I hear from people, he's very,
very smart, So you'd like to think so. Um, you know,
veteran coaches, guys who have been around for thirty five
years in the NFL have always told me, and I
(01:40:53):
think there's a significant kernel of truth to it that
coaches coach what they know. And Cliff Kingsbury is a
younger coach. He's predominantly an air right guy. It doesn't
mean that he hasn't spent off seasons trying to learn
other things. So I can't speak to that, but that's
predominantly his background. Great stuff, great coastal joining us on
(01:41:13):
the Doug Gotli Show Fox Sports Fred. All right, let's
go with some of the some of the stuff we're
gonna see this weekend. Um, I look at the Cowboys
defense and I think, okay, things they have given the
Rams trouble. Do you have a good pass rush and
do you have linebackers that can run and cover somebody
like Todd Gurley? And to me, who hasn't watched and
broken down the tape the way that you haven't the
football knowledge that you have, I think they can. You've
(01:41:36):
seen it, you know it? Can they? Yes? I think philosophically,
the Cowboys are well equipped to play the Rams and
their offense. The Rams offense has not been at its
highest level over the last despite their final game of
the season, it's not been at its highest level over
the last month or so. The Cowboys are built on
two elements that are among the best in the NFL
(01:41:58):
run game and defense. And what that does is it
keeps games close now throughout much of the game. They
do not ask Dak Prescott to do too much in
the passing game, but that profile of running and playing
great day and keeping games close makes games winnable in
the fourth quarter, and that's when Prescott's running, both by
design and improvisation, comes into play. So that's the way
(01:42:21):
the Cowboys play. They will not deviate from their style.
I don't believe they're going to come out and feel like, hey,
let's start tossing it all over the yard because we
have to put up thirty five. I think they'll stay
with their philosophic, philosophical approach. That's the lays a great
coastal joining us in the Doug Outlands Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Haven't seen the Saints in a couple of weeks.
Philadelphia Eagles we've seen. They've had to play their way
(01:42:42):
into the playoffs. How do the Eagles match up with
what the Saints like to do? Um? Well, I think
for the Eagles, you know, one of the things they've
really done with Nick Foles, uh is they've really gone
to the quick passing game. The ball gets out, it
really helps their oline. Their online has played very well.
Um I think what you might see because it's hard
(01:43:04):
to get pass rush pressure on the quick game throws
and this is part of the Saints m o as.
I think you'll see Doug press man coverage on the
outside try to disrupt the timing of the Eagles pass
game with press man coverage. Who knows, maybe they'll double
rts on the inside, But I think that they will
not give free access to the receivers, They will not
let the pass game be clean and rhythmic on the
(01:43:26):
on the perimeter. And then the idea would be that
Nick Folds then holds the ball. And while Nick is
very good rhythmically, the longer he holds the ball in
the pocket, the less effective he is. Doug gotlive show
here on Fox Sports Radio. So is there fools magic?
You mentioned that, uh, that he gets rid of the
ball much more quickly than Carson wentz Um and that
(01:43:46):
he has to get into rhythm. You've seen him. He
threw two like I see he threw those two picks. Yes,
he threw nice ball. How do you think he played
when he broke down in totality, I think he played
very solidly. I mean, you know, I think that the
way they structure their offense with Nick is is reflective
of the fact that he has certain strengths and some limitations.
(01:44:08):
And good coaching. What good coaching tries to do is
it tries to play to those strengths and it tries
to limit those deficiencies. And I think the Eagles do
that really really well with Nick Foles, and and that's
the reason they play the way they do. All right,
here's the basic scatter report on on the Patriots from
my Chargers insiders, right, Like, Look, they just play good football.
(01:44:29):
They've got three running backs, they've got a good offensive line. Um,
you know, they'll play fast when they when they want,
they can play slow. Defensively, they're solid, especially against the run,
really good in coverage with with no real pass rush. Okay,
if if that's the style and it's bad weather in
New England, I look at the Chargers and I'm like, Wow,
they have better personnel, But does that is that better
(01:44:51):
personnel able to beat the Patriots in New England something
that happens so seldom in the playoffs. I mean again,
you now you're getting into just a discussion of personnel
and tactics and and it's hard for me to respond.
In terms of well, home field advantage, I don't know
exactly what that means other than teams tend to win
more at home. Um, but I think that the Patriots
are a little bit different offense. They run the ball more,
(01:45:14):
they play more with two backs, twenty one personnel, and uh,
you know, I think that their past game is nowhere
near as explosive as it once was. I don't think
Gronkowski is quite the same guy as he was. I
think that he doesn't redirect as well, that you can
prevent him from being a big factor in the game.
Uh So, you know, I think that they match up
(01:45:35):
pretty well. They're a team that plays with six defensive
backs pretty much all the time. This past week they
played with seven. That was specific to Lamar Jackson. They'll
go back to playing with six, which they've done over
their defensive snaps this year. Last thing, Colts go into
Kansas City. How does that Colts defense everybody's talking about.
Colts defense is massively improved. How do they match up
(01:45:55):
with the speed of Kansas City. Well, they play predominantly zone.
They've actually increased their it's frequency. Kennymore has become a
really important player in their sub package defense as as
their slot corner, as a cover player and as a blitzer.
When you play Kansas City, you must prevent Tyree Hill
from being a factor from the inside flot. From the
(01:46:15):
slot and the inside flot, that's where the Chiefs like
to line him up. He can run by people, you
can let him get over the top of you. There
is zone based team they'll be very conscious of that.
And then you have Kelsey who's in a similar situation.
Not the speed player, but he also works really effectively inside.
I think those are the two players that you must
take away right. Stuff Listen, I know your phone raining
(01:46:37):
because you probably have fifteen more of these to do.
But we appreciate any amount of time that you spend
with us. Greg co South NFL Films, Thanks so much, Greg,
appreciate it. Doug. Thanks, that's Greg co Cell. Let's get
you to Ralph Irvin find out what else is going
on the world sports. Ralph, what you got? Well, we're
still waiting for that official announcement from the Cleveland Browns
naming offensive coordinator Freddy Kitchens to be their new head coach.
The team has already dismissed a number of assistants, including
(01:46:59):
the defensive coordinator in interim head coach Greg Williams. That
was earlier today. The Denver Broncos expected to bring in
Vic Fangio as their new head coach. I mean, we
know what's gonna happen. Fangio has already tweeted that he
can't wait to win a Super Bowl. Gary Kubiak is
going to move down from the front office become the
team's offensive coordinator. Earlier today, Cliff Kingsbury was introduced to
(01:47:22):
the Arizona Cardinals media and Matt Lafleur well, he gave
the uh, well, the obvious comment when he was introduced
to the Packers media. I just want to try to
develop the best relationship with Aaron because he is he
is a key piece to to the puzzle and a
key reason why why we're gonna get to where we
want to go. Well, at least he knows that he
(01:47:44):
can grasp the obvious on that one. The NFL and
nfl p A releasing a joint statement around the investigation
or investigating Eric Read's claim of improper drug testing, and well,
they saw that there was nothing wrong. The algorithm used
the select players at random worked perfectly. His selection rate
was not out of the norm, and the numbers of
times he claims to be tested, well, it was not

an accurate figure. In tonight's Discover Card key matchup the

not a good day for Eric read and for kind
of the movement that says the NFL is trying to

hell for coming back to the NFL because he took
a knee during the national anthem, like just makes some
look bad. It just does. It doesn't mean that collusion
didn't take place, but it's like it's like the preacher
that has his own issues at home. It doesn't mean
(01:49:12):
that what you're preaching about and between God and your
savior is inaccurate, but it makes it harder for us
to believe the validity of it when you're not being
honest about who you are and what you represent. Right,
I would say the biggest topic in sports is Cliff
Kingsbury and my music. Am I wrong? Like I watch
(01:49:35):
a lot of TV. I listened to a lot of radio.
I'm watching three different shows right now and they're all
saying the same thing. And I also love the there's
a trap. Here's NFL network trend of hiring younger coaches
like okay, is Fangio young? Like I'm I met with
(01:49:55):
coach Fangio is that he was the defensive coordinator of
the Chicago Bears. Vic Fangi, oh young. I would say,
he's gotta be yeah. Vic Fangio is the opposite of young.
He's old. Bruce is Bruce Arians young, Bruce Arian young.
(01:50:18):
I think he's he's young at all. Vic Fangio, by
the way, is sixty years old, sixty years old, and
he is a He is a tough dude, tough tough
dude to get along with. You know. Um, I will
say this about Fangio, which is interesting. I don't think
(01:50:43):
Fangio goes to Denver. Remember Fangio, his best success in
the NFL as a defensive coordinator up until this year
was with the Niners under hardball. I'm not I don't
think that Kaepernick's getting a call from Denver. But this
is a guy that that was there when he was
(01:51:05):
there anyway, um arians as held sixty six years old.
Now Freddy Kitchens is forty five and forty four and
Cliff Kingsbury is like forty one years old or something
(01:51:25):
so like, look all of this talk about younger coaches. Hey,
Cliff Kingsbury three nine has not reached the Big four.
Oh a Big four. Oh Um. Matt l Flour is
a younger dude as well, right, But basically it comes
down to Cliff Kingsbury has everybody everybody's lost their minds.
(01:51:46):
Like Sean McVeigh is young. He was thirty when he
got the job, thirty and McVeigh never played in the NFL,
like Kingsbury played assistant coach off and sub coordinator head coach. Yes,
he got fired Texas Tech, but we have people like
losing their mind over him getting the job or him
(01:52:10):
getting the job with the Arizona Cardinals, and I think
they're losing their mind for the wrong. You have to
know what the job entails now, it may evolve. It's
the Marvin Lewis I co hosted The Dan Patrick Show
with the t j oshman Zada on January one, and
(01:52:32):
he's like, dude, when Marvin Lewis took over. T J
was there the year before. It's like when Marvin Lewis
took over the year before at training camp, we had
strippers and prostitutes. Like in the dorms at training camp.
Marvin takes over and like no guys are going out
the night of games, night before games, guys are going out.
(01:52:56):
He taught he had to completely change the culture and
teach guys would have meant to be a professional that job, okay,
was more about changing culture, was more about becoming a
professional and making it into a legit NFL team. He
had to talk. He had to find a way to
(01:53:17):
get the players to buy in and to get some
vets that that that didn't allow that nonsense take place. Meanwhile,
he had to get the ownership to allow have guys
stay at hotel a hotel the night before a game,
which they didn't do previously. They didn't have new towels
before he got there, right that all old or down
towels didn't have practice facilities. Like all these things, what
(01:53:38):
did that job entail? We're in two thousand and nineteen.
What do all these jobs have in common? All of them?
It's not age, it's not location, it's not race. It's
one thing. Okay, every one of these jobs are of
(01:54:00):
ailable because the Jets have to figure out how to
get the most, how to not fail. Sam Donald, Sam
Donald's talented. Sam Donald is a leader. Sam Donald is tough.
We gotta put it. We got ninety million dollars in cash,
he's gotta spend it. We gotta get a guy who
That's what they're trying to figure out. Why the Green
(01:54:22):
Bay Packers fired Mike McCarthy because they couldn't get the
buy in from their quarterback. Why the Cleveland Browns settle
on a guy who just already calling plays at mid
season because he had a great relationship at the quarterback.
What do we hear about Josh Rosen when he was
(01:54:43):
drafted out of U c L. A boy needs to
be challenged, really challenged by his offensive cording or somebody
who intellectually challenges him, and he wasn't getting that with
the previous staff. They're gone. They hired somebody who, though
he's never coached in the NFL before it is played
in the NFL, coached offensive ball and they'll have to
get in the lab and figure it out together. Like
(01:55:05):
even Marvin Lewis losing his job in Cincinnati. It's because
Andy Dalton got hurt and they're gonna have to figure
out a quarterback situation in the future, right, and you
can sell Vic Fangio was a defensive quarner. Yeah, but
they hired Vic Fangio because they couldn't make Gary Kubiak
the head coach. He can't take his body, he can't
take it. So Fangio comes in. He's gonna coach the defense,
(01:55:30):
Kubiak coach the offense. And now they're trying to make
Kubiak's son the quarterback coach. It has nothing to do
with age. Bruce Arians isn't gonna call plays, Okay, but
Bruce Arians at least the quarterback whisperer. Don't believe me.
Go back and look when Big Ben Ben Roethlisberger was
(01:55:50):
at his best. Look when look when the Indianapolis Colts
had him as the interim coach. Look at the Arizona Cardinals.
Oh yeah, he wrote a book about it, all the
quarterbacks that he's worked with. So what they do. They're like, dude,
we got Jamis Winston and nobody has been able to
figure it out. Let's go and find who's the best guy.
(01:56:12):
That's what it's about. It's not about age, not about race,
not about experience. It's thought about your comb over or
how fat you are, how good looking you are. It's
not about any of that. It's about who is out
there who we think can do the best job with quarterbacks.
(01:56:33):
And you might say to yourself, well, and I've said, like,
well the Chargers. Look, they went out and hired a
dude who's solid, Anthony Lynn. But the Chargers didn't need
anyone in that particular instance. They didn't need anybody to
fix the quarterback. Why because they had Philip Rivers. They
needed somebody who was an everyday guy, who was solid.
(01:56:54):
Who is he's a parcels guy. He pushes them. They
were seen as soft. Now they're seeing a top How
to create How do we create a culture of toughness?
And they've done it and that's why they have won
thirteen games this year and they won six out of
the last nine last year. What does the job call
for and how do you find somebody to fix it? Period?
(01:57:20):
Alabama and Clemson are gonna have to rebuild their rosters.
I'll tell you why next. From a hot air balloon,
landing on a car to a load of concrete falling
on one. We've covered it, talked to farmers. We know
a thing or two because we've seen a thing or two.
We are farmers under written my Farmer's truck, fire insurance,
exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every state. Tis the season.
We're not talking about the holidays. We're talking about tax
(01:57:42):
season this year. Maximize your viv refund and use the
most trusted tax prep softwares in the world, tax Layer,
don't overpay. Switch today and find out more a text
layer dot com. The press. By the way, Sean Payton
got the saint's job all right when he was forty
two years old. John Payton's a former quarterback who had
(01:58:05):
never been a head coach before came over from the Cowboys.
Wasn't like they set the world on fire when he
was Offensivecording her quarterbacks coach with the Cowboys. This is
not a new trend, not a new trip. What he
got there, right, music, I'm not buying it, doug. Anything
that's happening now is new and innovative and we've never
seen it before. Yeah, that's like telling me, um lady
(01:58:28):
gagas new like Lady Gaga is just Brittany share Madonna. Like, right,
they're all the same shows, right, get just a bit
a bunch of outfits, but a bunch of singers on
a bunch of dancers on stage sing some pretty good songs. Uh,
you know we've seen all this before. All right, Doug,
let's start with a little college football slash NFL story. Um,
you had mentioned this just before the break. Some rebuilding
(01:58:51):
for Clemson and Alabama. Will start with Alabama. Jalen Hurts
entering the draft NFL draft pool doesn't mean that he
will I thought it transfer transfer pool. He's eligible to
play right away because he technically graduated in December. Yeah,
I think he's out. And look, I don't have any problem.
People are like, well, you got Lieber against transferred, no
(01:59:13):
mn gainst transfer in the middle of the season, right,
Like if you decided to stay for the year, stay
for the year. And look, this is the I like
he I don't even like the ability to graduate and transfer, Like,
I think there's laws that you should have to sit
out a year and then you can actually get your
graduate degree, which is the reason that you do it
to begin with. But like, look, two is gonna play.
(01:59:35):
They signed to his brother, they got another backup there.
They're fine, and I think Jalen hurts experience. I bet
he ends up going to TCU, a place that's been
a landing spot for several transfers. Here's where the NFL
comes into play. Doug Dexter Lawrence of the Clemson Tiger
like guy, was suspended for the National Change. That's correct.
He is entering the NFL Draft along with a couple
(01:59:55):
of other underclassmen from Clemson Trayvon Mullen, t Tray Lamar.
But they're also losing their entire defensive line as Cleveland Farrell,
Christian Wilkins, and Austin Bryant were all seniors. It seems interesting.
There's no way all of those guys are gonna be
NFL stars, right. One of those guys got propped up
by the dominance of the other two. You would think,
(02:00:17):
um m m, yeah, I you would think. I mean, like, look,
it does seem like a have the number of guys.
I mean, they're all gonna be first, second, or third
round picks. Um ah, they'll I'll get drafted. I'm just
saying the likelihood that they're all stud not right, not great, No,
not well, but they also one national championship. I I'm
(02:00:41):
not bothered. I'm not I'm not bothered by it. I
I you know, if they're if the evaluations say they're
gonna be a first or second round pick, you should go.
If it says third or fourth, then I think you
should stay because then you can dominate next year in
college football. Playing at Clemson, played for the national championship. Yeah. Absolutely,
I don't blame the players. A war arning to the
NFL team, So sticking with the NFL, Doug, Dak Prescott
(02:01:03):
suffered a bit of a knee injury and the first
surround of the playoffs that went over the Seahawks. But
earlier today he said, my knee is good, it's great.
So apparently Dak Prescott hunter percent healthy once again. Yeah, look,
I do I think he's a little dinged, sure, but
I don't think he's and he's hurt, not injured. Right,
fair enough your favorite topic that we've been keeping an
eye on, Doug. According to MLB dot Com, a source
(02:01:25):
citing that it is gaining momentum that Bryce Harper will
resign with the Nationals short term deal A lot of
money put him back on the market when maybe the
market gets better. Uh. I I don't care what the
numbers are. I don't think I think this really hurts
his representation, Like that, Does that mean Scott Boris is
(02:01:48):
not going to get all the big clients? No, but
there was so much talk of Boris and huge numbers
and and whatever. And if he end up swallowing your
pride and resigning a place you could have resigned all
all along, like you don't love it? Yeah. And another
player looking for big money, Manny Machado, also represented by Boards,
looking for three million. The report from John Hayman Chicago
(02:02:09):
White Sox and Phillies not believed to be close, and
the team Machado prefers to go to the Yankees haven't
even made an official offer yet. We're seeing the trend
we saw it last year, we saw with veteran players, okay,
and last year's veteran players this year. Do you know
what teams need more than anything? Depth of bullpen? Right,
(02:02:31):
depth of bullpen. We got platoon guys we can use
in for everyday hitters, but one of the veteran guys
are getting cut out because of depth of bullpen. So
I think that's hurting them as well. Get out there
and pressed that the press. Joey Bosa will join us tomorrow.
We'll ask him about the seven combined sacks that defensive
line of the Chargers got last week. What they have
(02:02:53):
to do to get at the feet and bring down
the great Tom Brady. Plus Less needs gonna join us.
Suck some rams ram was Cowboys this upcoming weekend at
the stadium. Maybe Dan Buyer returns, Maybe not. Can't come
back unless he's watch pulp fiction. This is Doug Outlive Show.
