Speaker 1 (00:28):
Come see you live, same bad channel, same same bad time,
same bad channel, every day, getting you ready for a
World Series Game six from Toronto coming up later tonight. Obviously,
we want to talk about all things that are important
to you, right that's the number one thing. And a
(00:49):
quick congratulations to our guy, Colin Cowherd, who last night
was inducted into the Radio Hall of Fame. I do
think you look. Colin is a f and a mentor
of mine. And one of the things that Colin has
always said and frankly taught me when I was just
a young whipper snapper we got to ESPN at the
exact same time, was don't talk about what you want
(01:14):
to talk about, talk about what the most people want
to hear about. So look, I'll start with the NFL.
Last night was a complete beat down. One team is
trying to turn around their season, the other one seems
dead the water. And the one team is trying to
turn around their season came in with the inferior record.
Lamar Jackson Ravens, come in not really competitive against the Dolphins,
(01:37):
and today Chris Greer is let go.
Speaker 2 (01:40):
But I I gotta take.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
It's the word I'm looking for. I gotta take a second,
okay and call bs BS on something probably the most
powerful man in sports media had to say earlier today
was not research, not poorly researched, not research categorically misconstrued
(02:18):
or even false and designed simply to feed into the
narrative that the end of the day, the NFL is racist.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Right.
Speaker 1 (02:32):
I'll get to that in one second. First, here's Mike McDaniel,
the still head coach of the Miami Dolphins, summing up
the loss after the game.
Speaker 3 (02:39):
That was that self inflicted wounds. That we've been putting
such an emphasis on, you know, all things related to
our operation, and in a critical fourth and fourth and
one where the you know, we're pretty fired up about
the defensive look. It was what we were calling the
(03:02):
play for. And that's flat out a controllable that our
team knows that keeps you from winning. So I rate
at nothing but our self inflicted wound.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Yeah, okay, that's Oli Gordon. He slips, he falls, he
low bridges oncoming defender, causes a penalty and they don't
get the first down because of it. And then Oli
Gordon is yelling back an assistant coach. And again, if
you watch the video, Oli fell down. He slipped, but
again it still is your fault when you slip. Whatever,
(03:44):
the Dolphins were gonna change coaches at the end of
the year, regardless, the Dolphins are probably gonna have to
change quarterbacks at the end of the year or get
into the process of whenever they can get out of
to his deal, get out.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
Of to his deal.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Chris Greer was fired. That should be mentioned. He's been
with the organization for twenty five years. In those twenty
five years, they have won exactly zero playoff games. He's
been the GM for ten years. They've won exactly zero
playoff games. And I'm not saying it's not difficult, but
I heard this earlier today on first take, and I
(04:22):
thought it was so bad it was actually offensive.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
And I'll tell you why after you listen to Steven A.
Smith is BS. That's the first fire.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
Really, that's what we're doing, what we've seen, what we
just finished talking about. You know, there are things that
you need to be modified, et cetera, et cetera. But
the personnel that they have on their squad, although we're
not we're not happy with it. We didn't walk into
this season thinking they were going to be trash. We
looked at their rost and we said they got some potential.
Speaker 2 (04:52):
We'll see what happens.
Speaker 4 (04:53):
It was about Tua, it was about Mike McDaniel and
the brother get fired first. All I know is this,
I better hear Mike McDaniel's name today. I better hear
Mike McDaniel's name today. But it better not be just
Chris Grere. And I'm not saying that he don't deserve
it because of the way they look at the end.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
You knew you at the helm.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
I got it. I understand it. Listen, I'm all for
brothers as head coaches gyms. We know what battles I've
been fighting over thirty years. Okay, I got it, all right,
but we go because when you don't get the job done,
you don't get the damn job done.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
Period.
Speaker 5 (05:26):
I got it.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
Don't tell me it's just him. Don't tell me we
gonna leave Mike McDaniel's in place, and we just gonna
fire him and we gonna move forward.
Speaker 2 (05:36):
Damn that.
Speaker 6 (05:37):
I don't want to hear it.
Speaker 5 (05:38):
I'm waiting for more news. I'm waiting for more news again.
Speaker 6 (05:42):
I can't.
Speaker 4 (05:42):
I can't defend Chris Grere with some of the decisions
that have been made personal wise.
Speaker 2 (05:47):
I got it.
Speaker 4 (05:48):
I understand it's unfortunate, but I got it. But I'll
be damned if it gets to stop there.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
Oh hell no, So we all heard the exact same thing. Okay.
Speaker 1 (06:00):
I don't want to mislabel it. I don't want to
misassociate it. I don't want to treat it as anything
other than what we heard Stephen A.
Speaker 2 (06:07):
Smith say. Steven A.
Speaker 1 (06:09):
Smith said that though he thinks Chris Greer ultimately should
have been fired because he's black, he shouldn't be the
first one fired because the problems are with TUA and
with Mike McDaniel. Now, there's two different things that we
have to point out one, Mike McDaniel is mixed race.
(06:32):
His father, I believe, is a black man. Tua is Samoan.
So again, I'm not racist. I don't know how racism works.
I just don't. Apparently, in Steven A. Smith's world, because
Chris Greer has darker skin and both parents are black, well,
then the Dolphins are racist against him more so than
(06:56):
against McDaniel and Tua.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Right, that's the assumption.
Speaker 1 (07:05):
He talked about the decisions that have been made he
doesn't agree with. Who was the general manager when they
selected Tua? The answer is Chris Greer, who was the
general manager when they re signed Tua. The answer is
Chris Greer, who was the general manager who told the owner,
(07:26):
Stephen Ross. It's either Brian Flores, who didn't like Tua
and didn't like Chris Greer and didn't like essentially any
offensive coach who coached with him, and so they got
rid of him and they brought in Mike McDaniel. He
hired Mike McDaniel, He drafted Tua, he re upped toa
(07:48):
He built this entire roster, and the biggest flaw in
all of sports media is one of the things that
was on display outside of you know, race baiting and
creating a narrative which is completely false and doesn't exist
and is super embarrassing to any of us in sports media,
especially somebody who's the highest paid employee at ESPN essentially
(08:11):
calling the Dolphins races for firing a GM who they'd
held on for ten years despite the fact they never
won a playoff game. But here's the biggest mistake they made.
We are some of the players, We like some of
the players. That's because you don't like one he doesn't
know the roster. Second, it's not about the talent. The
(08:33):
most talented teams don't win. It's the best teams that win.
Speaker 2 (08:40):
Hey, and they.
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Made who made the decision to trade for for Tyreek Hill.
Keep in mind you can criticize the personnel, the wide
receivers they've given to Pat Mahomes since Tyreek Hill was traded,
they've won two Super Bowls since he's been gone.
Speaker 2 (09:00):
Why.
Speaker 1 (09:00):
Because you don't win just based on talent. You gotta
win based on guys that salary fits in and want
to be part of a team. Tyreek Kill didn't want that,
so they Chris Greer's biggest mistake, biggest mistake was drafting
to over Justin Herbert right. That ultimately is why he
gets fired. But the other mistakes he's made is he's
(09:21):
gone talent over character. They have some guys with terrible
character on that team that they've been trying to get
rid of, that ruined any sort of culture that they
tried to build. And the defense stakes and two is
not good enough and everybody knows it. But you have
the most powerful man in sports media.
Speaker 2 (09:44):
Don't believe me.
Speaker 1 (09:45):
Just ask him stating something which he's forgotten, that they
fired the coach last time to keep the general manager.
The coach was black, the general managers was black. Nobody
said anything about it except for Brian Flores, who sued
the Dolphins. And so instead of actually talking about what happened,
how to fix it, who they should hire, you know,
(10:06):
or whatever, instead they label the NFL as racist.
Speaker 2 (10:09):
And then there's nobody on that set that.
Speaker 1 (10:11):
Goes like, uh, hey, you know, he was there for
twenty five years, he was the GM for ten. The
entire front office is actually black with the Miami Dolphins.
So they're not racist to hire and support and promote
Chris career, but they're racist to fire him. Instead of
(10:31):
firing a mixed race coach or firing a Simoan or
trading or get rid of or cutting a soon quarterback.
That doesn't make any sense to anybody with any sort
of brains. But again, the people that listen to stephen A.
Smith think worlds out to get black people. The NFL
is racist. That's why they fire Chris Career first, and
they'll get to Mike mcdane.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
It's some other day, Jace do.
Speaker 1 (10:56):
I just want to make sure did you hear the
same thing that I heard? Just want to make sure
that I'm not just hearing things I'm not and I'm
not like, I'm not one of these guys that goes
around and tries to find things which people call racism
and you're like, it's not ra but like this is.
It's utterly ridiculous, and it's it's the type of thing
(11:19):
that I believe has driven people away from the rest
of ESPN. I don't think all or even most of
people who work at ESPN think this way. Most of
the broadcasting is based upon the actual sports, but the
race bating is tired, it's done, it's over, And this
one only proves that stephen A does no work, no
(11:42):
research doesn't actually care to do so. And then two
he plays that one card he always has, which is racist.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Did I miss something?
Speaker 7 (11:53):
No, I don't think you missed anything. And I do
think that there needs to be some clarification from the
people over there at esp ON, like what what where
does the mixed race fall into this? Because remember Ryan
klarquast Fall said that Lamar Jackson needs to win a
Super Bowl for US. Lamar Jackson does when Pat Mahomes
(12:15):
is one four or five, right, Yeah, And in this situation,
mixed race Mike McDaniel somehow is left out of the equation.
I just don't know how that factors in here.
Speaker 1 (12:26):
Yeah, I just again, that's say that is a that
is a cultural argument that we can't That's one you
can't get into, right. I mean, look, nobody, nobody crushes
black people like black people.
Speaker 2 (12:42):
Will do it.
Speaker 8 (12:43):
You know.
Speaker 1 (12:43):
It's one of the things about that A lot of
people in the black community will say, like, hey, why
do we treat light skin people differently than dark seam
Like why do we do that? It does happen in
other parts of society, happens in Mexico, as I think
anybody in California knows there's always been the comp between
lighter skinned Mexicans and darker skinned Mexicans. And again that's
(13:03):
not my purview. I don't know, and I don't care.
I don't think he didn't take it. He wasn't saying
that because he's mixed raced. He's below that of you know,
somebody who comes from a black mom and black dad.
Speaker 2 (13:15):
He didn't know. He didn't know.
Speaker 1 (13:17):
He doesn't even remember about Brian Flores. He didn't know
about the whole Miami Dolphins front office. He doesn't know,
and he doesn't care because nobody outside of us and
some other people will call him on the bull crap.
But this is bull crap because all he had to
do was ask a researcher. He doesn't even have to
know himself. Hey man, give me, give me something on
(13:37):
the Dolphins. And you know what, they wouldn't say. They
wouldn't say, you know, it's got a racist to fire
at Chris Greer first, because they would point out, you know,
they hired Chris Greer, They stood by Chris Greer. The
whole front office was African American, The last head coach
was African American. It doesn't make any sense, But that
doesn't get clicks, and we just gave him more clicks,
even if we were clowning on his take.
Speaker 5 (14:00):
The best of the dog Dot Leap Show on Fox
Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (14:06):
Stut gott Leap Show here on Fox Sports Were Radio,
and let's welcome.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
In season nine.
Speaker 1 (14:11):
Season nine after an unbelievable run last year with the Knicks,
Josh Hart joins us and Josh, how many group chats
do you normally have? Like, I don't know, daily, weekly, basis.
How many group chats you're in?
Speaker 8 (14:27):
I'm probably in about four or five?
Speaker 1 (14:30):
Okay, so this cold water chat, this is like you're
the people you grew up with.
Speaker 8 (14:35):
Yeah, it's yeah Mad, who's like my brother, who's also
on my podcast, his wife, my wife now, one of
my best friends past, all really basically from from high school.
Speaker 2 (14:50):
Okay, So how long has this group chat been going?
Speaker 8 (14:56):
Oh? I don't know, probably quite a while. It's hard
to give it an actual actual time, but I'll say
I know all these people. Themar is, the newest one
who's my wife's for my mad wife, the newest one
who came about box four years ago. So it's been
(15:16):
going for a couple of years.
Speaker 2 (15:18):
Yeah, I think.
Speaker 1 (15:18):
I think the problem with those is what happens if
somebody leaves the chat. You're like, ooh, what happened? What
happened there?
Speaker 2 (15:22):
They did they but nobody nobody's left the chat. I
bring it up.
Speaker 1 (15:25):
Because what Heineken's doing is your group chat is is
going to take over a bar in New York?
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Is that right?
Speaker 8 (15:33):
Yep? Yep.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
So it's there, You're changing a bar to the Cold
Water Bar, but only the people, Like how many people
get invited to this thing? If there's only like a
handful of people in.
Speaker 8 (15:43):
The group chat, it's just us. It's just us. It's
a it's a way for us to kind of just
come together obviously, you know group chat, you know, I
mean it's it's cool, but you know, being able to
hang out, you know, in real life and just kick it,
you know, as friends in person. I mean it not
(16:04):
that the memories, so you know, it's that's just for us.
You know, we're the only ones that divided, so this
is kind of a time for us to kind of
hang out and you know, make new memories that lave
it all memories.
Speaker 2 (16:17):
It's a pretty cool thing.
Speaker 1 (16:19):
Following the launch of the bar Heineken and Josh are
going to be issuing a nationwide contest selecting a special
group chat between your very own Heineken group chat bar
experience designed to turn the digital banter into an unforgettable
in person memory. And of course, Josh Hart's joining us
on behalf of Heinegan here on the Doug Gottlieb Show
on Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (16:38):
Trade it.
Speaker 1 (16:39):
You've been through a lot of things in the NBA.
You know, traded obviously, you know, drafted by the Lakers,
and you know, this is your fourth team you play for.
You guys get to the conference finals and your coach
gets fired? What what what is that like to see
such team success and yet such turnover on the bench
after such team success.
Speaker 8 (17:01):
It's it's definitely a little different, you know, something that
you don't really see often. But you know, I think
the core of the core group that we have is
you know, it is a great group. And obviously, you know,
you ask someone like Mike who's uh, who's won, who's
(17:22):
been a winning situation and those would takes to win?
You know that that's uh, it's a great it's a
great you know, it's a great fit. So it's definitely
a little different. It's gonna take a little time to
h you know, everything to Jael and everyone to get
activated with each other. But you know, I think it's
a recipe for success.
Speaker 1 (17:42):
You know, there there's a there's a world there where
you look at you and and Jalen Michael, you know
all the time and the wins and the friendship together
where outside looking in and you're like, are those guys
welcoming to new people?
Speaker 2 (17:55):
What is that like? To play with.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
Guys that you have such a strong bond with, but
then you have to be cognizant of new people also
want it not just be teammates, but have those type
of relationships. How do you handle that?
Speaker 8 (18:12):
Yeah, I mean you never you know, you never want
to have, you know, new teammates and people come across
and think that you guys are kind of like, you know,
it kind of clicks up because obviously you guys have
a great relationship. But I think we're just we're extremely welcoming.
I think all of our characters that we're all extremely outgoing.
(18:34):
We're all very very talkative, you know, but we always
want people to feel comfortable, and I think, you know,
that's something that we try to go out of our
way to do it. Make sure everyone is comfortable with,
you know, the new situation. Obviously with new people that
come to the team, that's the hardest part is just
(18:55):
kind of like the uncertainty of like how the guy's
going to welcome me and those kind of things. So
we always how to put an emphasis on, you know,
communicating and being as welcoming as possible.
Speaker 1 (19:08):
When you guys have been as good as now you
are with the Knicks, everybody in New York wants to
come to seeking. There's nothing like a game at the Garden.
Has there been a moment where you've looked across to
the front row and even you've done a dope because like, Bro,
you played in LA, you've played in New York, you been
this league for a long time, you won national championships.
Has there been a moment where you looked across like
(19:29):
I cannot believe they're here to watch us.
Speaker 8 (19:31):
Play now that I can think of, I'm like, you know,
it's New York celebrity row is, it's unmatched, but it's
all I always look at it like, oh, this is
this is super dope, like having you know we've had
(19:53):
I mean, obviously it's it's hard to you know, obviously,
fight's always there. Denzel's you know, comes to games. He
wants to like bad bunnies there party be like you
can just go down the list. So I always look
at it like, man, this is just it's a super
core experience, you know. And you know he's trying to
not have to think of a granted.
Speaker 1 (20:15):
Josh Hart joining us and the Doug Outleeb Show on
behalf of of Heineken because they're they're trying to create
a true social off socials moment with the official season
start and of course, uh, Josh part of that that
three some of Villanova Wildcats, part of the New York
Nicks to go to the Eastern Conference finals, and you
see him kind of all over on billboards, you know,
(20:36):
electric cars, you you name it. Uh, but you're also
you're you have this unique skill, Josh, where you're the
hard playing dude that kind of can annoy the other
team and draw a charge or get an offensive rebound.
Speaker 2 (20:51):
But you haven't crossed.
Speaker 1 (20:52):
Over to where you're the villain, right, you know, like
you look across teams, everybody has a villain. How have
you maintained the status of being the hard playing guy
without being the villain the other other band bases hate.
Speaker 8 (21:07):
I don't know, man, I always you know, I always
trying to play the game, you know, as as hard
as I can, with as much respect as I can.
You know, I always said obviously you know we're here
talking about hind Agen and I and it's very fitting.
But like I always wanted to be as Honey, you know,
the hardworking guy but extremely relatable. I want to feel
(21:29):
like I'm much kind of even go you know, go
to the bar with the crack over the up here,
you know, cracked over the hind again and something like that.
Like that's how I want people to view me as,
just like someone who is playing extremely hard but also
is extremely relatable. So I think, you know that kind
of that kind of helps a little bit, you know,
(21:50):
because I don't really try to, you know, be disrespectful
or try to you know, put myself on my team
on a pedestal.
Speaker 1 (21:59):
Well, josht year was an unbelievable year. What's your level
of confidence? Especially you know Pacers, how he gets hurt Celtics,
you know, Tatum, Tatum may come back, may not like
it does feel like if not, now when this should
be the year. What's it like to prepare for this
season knowing that you're really not judged until May and June.
(22:21):
How do you how do you mentally get ready for
the fight knowing that what you're really judged by is
months and months away.
Speaker 8 (22:30):
Yeah? Man, it's at times it's tough because obviously, you
you know what the goal is and uh, you know,
at times you want to you know, h h, hit
a button a fast forward and get to April or
gets to May or something like that. But you know,
you you kind of have to take it one day
at a time. And I know it's kind of cliche
and it's you know, people kind of looking at like, okay, yeah, yeah, sure, sure,
(22:55):
but you know it's the truth. You know, you got
to take you know, these kind of things that at
a time and continue to progress and continue to build
because if you don't do that and you you know,
automatically think you're going to get to where you were
last year or take that next step. Uh, you know,
there's complacency that sits in and that's something that we
(23:17):
don't want uh to be associated with that, you know,
that word complacency. As as a team at the individuals.
As an organization, we want to be you know, people
who work hard, people who continue to build that, you know,
game by game by game, and uh, when you do that,
you know success. You know it is bound to happen.
(23:38):
But you can't rest success.
Speaker 1 (23:42):
You cannot rest success. And you guys have built it
and continue to build it in New York are thanks
to Hein again for having you on. Plus, it's really
cool your group, Chet cold Water, all your people from
back home, your wife and your friends. Of course I
know you're taking over bar in New York City.
Speaker 2 (23:55):
This is a really good, really cool.
Speaker 1 (23:56):
Social campaign to launch the NBA season. Josh, best of luck,
continue health and thanks for joining us on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 8 (24:02):
I appreciate it. Mo Man, have a go on.
Speaker 5 (24:04):
Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk lineup in
the nation yet. Catch all of our shows at Foxsportsradio
dot com and within the iHeartRadio app.
Speaker 1 (24:13):
Got a question for you, guys, This is a real question, Okay, Dan,
and to put your headsets on there. I know you're
getting situated. You got other stuff to do. So we
played Kansas on Monday. Okay, their first exhibition, in our
first exhibition. We're both up on ESPN Plus. Okay, I
think they've both been taken down. Last night we played
(24:35):
an exhibition against Saint Norbert. They played an exhibition against
Fort Hayes State, I think two nights ago. I think
that was on ESPN Plus. But again, I think it's
been taken down. I don't think we you can. We
don't have the actual tapes.
Speaker 2 (24:51):
So uh.
Speaker 1 (24:53):
One of coach self's assistants asked, say, hey, we're gonna
do a tape exchange. Now it had not been pre
agreed to before. Okay, it's not like hey, we hey, listen,
we're gonna do its tape exchange.
Speaker 2 (25:08):
It's all good. Whatever.
Speaker 1 (25:09):
We play Monday, like their rank nineteen in the country,
we won four games last year. Do you give them
the tapes?
Speaker 2 (25:20):
Yes, Chase do sure? Well, you guys are just like sure.
Speaker 5 (25:27):
Like the.
Speaker 9 (25:29):
Well Jason was sure.
Speaker 1 (25:30):
I said, yes, okay buy or why you you actually
gave a little thought. I could see your brain working
a little bit there.
Speaker 9 (25:39):
Why well, it reminds me of Deadliest Catch. Every episode
they joined to work together, and then somebody finds Crab
and then I want to give up their secrets and
it's this whole deal. And then if you're out on
somebody and they found out that you're that type of
guy that lingers. You giving your game tape to Kansas
(26:01):
is probably not going to affect the outcome of Monday. However,
you not giving up your tapes will have a reputation
that could last I don't know throughout the college game.
Speaker 1 (26:13):
Sure, And and I consider Bill a mentor and a
friend as well, and I don't want to sell you
that relationship. On the other hand, there is the like, hey, well,
Bill self calls and he called me this morning. I
haven't missed him because I was prepping for the show.
You know, he calls, you wants the tapes? Like, what
am I gonna do?
Speaker 2 (26:30):
Here? Go like no, But do.
Speaker 1 (26:36):
I think like if he was playing John Shire today,
would John Shire be like, I'm like you ay tapes?
Speaker 2 (26:41):
Like what are you talking about? Yeah? It was definitely
Evy right right. They're Kansas. Yeah, but they're Kansas.
Speaker 9 (26:51):
But it's also different like Duke in Green Bay.
Speaker 2 (26:53):
No, what do you what do you think? What do
you think?
Speaker 1 (26:55):
What do you think it's worse to them? Ten grand,
twenty grand? I'm just thought here, let me ask Mark Dominic.
He's a former general manager of tamp Bay Buccaneers, who
joins us for his weekly visit Mark. We open the
season with Kansas, the most storied program in college basketball.
You know it's it's the place where James Nasmith is
(27:17):
the only coach ever to have a losing.
Speaker 2 (27:18):
Record in the history of the program.
Speaker 1 (27:21):
Right, it's they play in an absolute cathedral. They won
like it's your Alla Modern. They won like twenty straight
big twelves. He's won two national championships. I would my
guess would be they have thirty times what we have
in nil and that may be underselling. So coach South
(27:42):
politely asked for our exhibition tapes in a tape exchange?
Speaker 2 (27:48):
Do you give it to him?
Speaker 8 (27:52):
Who?
Speaker 6 (27:56):
So again rock Kerry Hawk to start this off with, Well,
you know what, probably if it's something that you're consistently
done before with programs, I think it's never never done.
Speaker 1 (28:08):
Last year when we played Oklahoma State, Yeah, we made
sure they didn't because when we play we played St.
Speaker 2 (28:13):
Norbert every year. They're in our town. They're Division III.
Speaker 1 (28:16):
So last year Anthony Roy, who by the way, now
plays for Oklama State, he made twelve his first twelve threes.
Speaker 2 (28:23):
So we're like Oh god, I hope they don't see
that tape. Right.
Speaker 1 (28:25):
We didn't even we ran a couple of things, but
he was just so good it was unbelievable. And he
ended up having like thirty two against Oklahoma State. But again, like,
I don't they hadn't seen that tape. I don't believe.
So it's not something it's not in the contract. We
hadn't previously agreed to it. But I mean, he's Bill
effing self and he's like, hey, let's switch tapes.
Speaker 2 (28:47):
What do I say?
Speaker 6 (28:48):
Yeah? I would say that Bill is just something we
just don't do. As much as I appreciate it, it's
just something we don't do. And I'd feel good about that.
And he'd be like, well, what's the big deal. I'm like,
I think you already have you know, a situation there
where you know, we're just walking in but we're gonna
stay with president. This is what we've always done. We've
rarely ever switched tapes, and I would I would do that.
That's then I would have the confidence to say, hey,
(29:08):
well I appreciate it, and uh, you know, but that's
just something we don't do. And I wouldn't think twice
about it. Because I don't think it's going to change. Uh,
the relationship you may have or don't have with Bill.
Speaker 1 (29:18):
Self fair enough, I got I got some just deciding
to do here for the next couple of hours because
I know that phone's gonna blow up as soon as
we hit sin as we hit four Local Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. The Dolphins, I mean, that's how they've
looked most of the year. Uh, and they have some
issues there. What are your thoughts on the Chris career firing.
Speaker 6 (29:41):
Well, I'm jealous because when I got fired, it wasn't
I thought it was a mutual decision too. But I
guess he gets to have the mutual decision and mine
was just getting fired. Yeah, you know, I'm not I
hate to say this. Chris is a guy that I've
known forever. Obviously, anybody that's been in the NFL has
known him since I think we got in the league
just about the same time, might be the one year sooner.
He's been part of that Dolphins organization for a long
(30:03):
time and and part of the decision making all the
way back to two thousand and three when he was
director of college scouting, and then he was you know,
the player personnel, and so he's he's been he's the
director of overall scouting, so he's been part of the
Dolphins for you know, two decades. At some point I
get it, like I understand where mister Ross said. It's
it's got to be part of the culture of the
(30:24):
team that we created and the culture of the team, Yeah,
it comes through the head coach, but also is the
people that you bring him to the building. And I
think you've got to you know, you don't just talk
to you know, you know people around your organization. You
talk to players in your organization. You talk to people
that you trust in the organization and get a sense
of what are they saying. And it sounds to me
like and this is what I thought. I thought, either
they're both gone or just Chris goes. And then at
(30:46):
the end of the year, you know, then maybe you
make the change with the head coach to see if
anything else changes, and tweaks as players kind of going, wow,
the guy that drafted me's not here anymore. They got
to sign me as a free agent, or is not
here anymore, and you better step up your game because
you know the person's coming in. Goes, these weren't my guys, right,
So I think it's gonna be a what do we
see the Dolphins look like over the next you know,
(31:08):
weeks and months. But I don't think it's a quick
firing to the head coach. I think this one you
could play this one all the way out until December,
see where the team sits, and then make the decision there.
Speaker 1 (31:18):
What got him fired the quarterback decision, the coaching decision,
or the lack of culture that they appear by all
reports to have because of some of the personnel they've acquired.
Speaker 6 (31:35):
Yeah, you know, I think I think what got him
fired was if you're just really looking at what they've
tried to build for the last decade, they just can't
seem to build ay through the sustainable and I think
mister Rosslick said it and goes, you know what the
offensive line is still feels like kind of a mess.
Speaker 3 (31:50):
You know.
Speaker 6 (31:51):
The skill guys, Yes, we got jam and Wall right,
but we had to go get Tyreek Hill. You know,
do we where are we at? Skill wise? You know?
And I think it was just not the elite players
that you're not seeing, especially on the defensive of the ball.
You know, there's just good football players, but the elite
ones just aren't showing up. And I think there's been
enough draft classes to say who do you hang your
hat on? And so I think it's an overall I don't.
(32:14):
I never thought, and I think we talked about it.
I never thought, too, we should have a long term extension.
Thought would be like a two or three year extension
and kind of see what happens. I do think the
two of contract has to play into it somewhat because
you're just married to him and it is what it is.
And I think that's a bit frustrating too, because I'm
sure in the end he signed off on that, and
that's that's the decision you make as a GM. You
ride or die with your quarterback.
Speaker 1 (32:36):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, I mean,
I'm going to tell you, I understand the thoroughness by
what you're talking about in terms of your evaluation of
everything in the organization until the season's over. But I
think we'd probably both agree. If you're get rid of
the guy who built the team and was part of
(32:57):
the build for the last twenty five years, you're going
to change coaches. You're probably going to change quarterbacks as
well pretty soon.
Speaker 6 (33:05):
I don't disagree. I think that that's more than likely
correct because of the fact that, look, you know, the
next person may hold on to him or you just
you know, eat it. I mean, that's the difference that
we have in the salary cap these days. When I
was gim over five years a salary cap went up
one million dollars or the five year period. You know,
Now we're seeing jumps of twenty twenty five million dollars
a year. So when you make a colossal mistake or
(33:27):
you admit a mistakes, you can survive it. You can
survive the Carson Wentzes of the worlds or whatever the
big deal is of the quarterback in now Latua, and
you just realize, we're just going to write that off. Understand,
we've got to make a change and change the direction.
So I do think two is probably done, But obviously
it's going to be up to the next season and
the next potential head coach.
Speaker 1 (33:48):
Stet got leaves show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay,
so then let's ask about the Baltimore Ravens. What can
we decipher from a team that had been kind of
lost now they've won a couple of row. They got
Lamar Jackson back. What's the hope like that they can
turn the season around, considering the defense has been as
much of the issue as the offense.
Speaker 6 (34:07):
Yeah, I mean, I think that they absolutely can turn
it around. I mean, the AFC North all lost, right,
so that's everything they needed to see happen, you know,
before their game on Monday night, and then you know
now that this team is they can continue to get
healthy er and start to play a little bit more
consistent like they did last than on defense. I still
think the Ravens make the postseason, and I said that
when they were one in five. I'm like, you've got
to look at their schedule and it feels like this
(34:29):
is a team that could really get all the way
there and get back. And I'm not going to count
out coach Harbon. I'm not going to count out Lamar Jackson.
So I think they're gonna role. I think they're going
to get back to five hundred in the next whatever
it's going to be four to five weeks, and then
I think that they'll find a way to get one
or two games over that market. I think they'll be
eleven in or ten and seven and be in the postseason,
and I think they'll be a scary postseason team. They
(34:49):
went to a slump and that's when you wanted to
kind of see what they do. But I don't think
they're going to fall back into that slump. I think
this team is legit.
Speaker 1 (34:56):
Stut Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio, Mark dominks
our guests. Of course, he's the former gall undred ten
Bay Buccaneers. Works his entire professional life like Chris Greer
working up in the system. He worked his way up
in Tampa, so there's a lot of similarities there here
on the Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio, would
you re up Danny Dimes when you have all of
(35:18):
what he did with the Giants, the time with Minnesota
and eight games of success so far with Indy.
Speaker 6 (35:26):
Not yet I got to see it play all the
way through. I want to see it in the postseason.
I want to see the whole picture. And I've got
the leverage to be able to do that if I
had to, you know, put the tag on him. So
I'm not going to be in a hurry to do this.
I'm you know, if I'm Chris Kreer. Excuse me, Chris Ballard,
I am, you know, ecstatic about this decision and what's
happened to our organization. And I've talked about, you know,
(35:48):
the entire offensive units as a whole is really playing well.
Tyler Warren has been a huge impact the offensive line
staying healthy, and obviously you know, the Alex Pearce's are
having career years right at the right time, and his
fourth year, so it's all coming together. But I don't
sit there and go, Okay, now, I've got to hurry
up and get a deal done, even if I have
to pay more, Doug, I'd rather pay more and know
(36:08):
rather than, oh, I'm going to get a Baker Mayfield
deal three for one hundred million. I'd rather pay forty
five to fifty million a year to make sure you
know that I'm getting a guy that I think can
do it for you know, eight to ten years, and
you know that's kind of the hope. And so I'll
pay more. But I need to see more, and I
believe in what I'm seeing, but I still want to
see it against bigger opponents, bigger stage, bigger situations, and
then we'll look at it.
Speaker 1 (36:28):
Stut Gottleeb Show on Fox Sports Radio Mark Dominic is
our guest. I'm trying to figure out Sunday Night football
because in the fourth quarter of the Packers look like
a super Bowl team, which they have occasionally previously. But
I also I think Pittsburgh's defense thinks which was Sunday
Night more a case of Pittsburgh's defense just not being
(36:52):
very good or the Packers kind of finding the rhythm.
Speaker 6 (36:55):
Well, you know, obviously, you know, we've talked a lot
about Jordan Love, and you know, he looked fantastic and
was doing everything he wanted to do. And I went
into the season believing in the Greenway Packers. I also
was the one going in the season believing in the
Pittsburgh Steelers and not just Aaron Rodgers. But I thought
the defense was going to be a big part of
what they're able to do, and right now it's not.
(37:16):
It's just not coming together. And again, it's that secondary
to me that they just can't seem to find the
right set of guys all at once clicked them together,
and so it's just very frustrating. I think that's why
they made the trade for Kyle Duggar to try to
get something else going on here. Within that organization to
fix the back end of the defense. I think that's
a big pieces of trouble and that's that's you got
(37:36):
to get through that first. They've got cash rushers. I
feel like they're you know, Peyton Wilson, they're inside linebacker.
May not be having a great season, but he's still
fitting his way to the ball. I just think it's
a secondary. I think that's why they made the move
for Kyle Duggar. I know he's on the you know,
the backside safety part, but they're looking for something to
kind of energize it and be more physical but also
be more disciplined. It's a Mike Commlin thing that you
(37:59):
would expect, but this is a Steelers defense, especially the secondary,
and any Steelers fans know never quite find a way
to get it fully correct. And I think that's what
we saw Sunday night.
Speaker 1 (38:08):
We're only seven games in and he's been banged up
even for those seven games after missing his first year.
But you do you watch Danny Dimes who they had,
You watch Sam Darnold who they had, and you got
to ask yourself, did the Vikings make the right decision
at quarterback?
Speaker 2 (38:27):
What's your opinion?
Speaker 6 (38:28):
My opinion is I want to see more out of JJ.
So you know, it's it's it's one thing. Danny Dimes,
you know, was there, but he had the opportunity and
he left and I can understand why. But with JJ,
I just need to see more. Still, I don't feel
like the book is written on JJ. There's not enough
starts ready to his belt. And now that he's going
(38:49):
to be back and I think able to go out
there and run around. Let's see again, he's thrown forty
one passes in the National Football League total in his life,
you know, so until he gets a two hundred and
three hundred pass and attempts, it's really hard to write anything.
I know it's been frustrating. I know it's been one
good quarter, but I still think he's got it and
we'll get to see it this weekend and see how
(39:11):
they play. But I think that overall, I believe that
he'll be the quarterback in the future, and I believe
that they're in good hands, and I would stay maintained.
I would maintain that statement in with the game of
Detroit this weekend.
Speaker 1 (39:24):
Demiko ryans he went to that place where it feels
like coaches only go when they're fighting for their job,
which is ah, the media is just negative. They're all negative.
Like we're talking Houston media. That's that doesn't feel like
the most negative media. What's your feel for Dimiko Ryan's
year three after really having a tremendous year one, okay,
(39:47):
year two, and now some struggles in year three.
Speaker 6 (39:50):
Yeah, I know they have had some struggles, but they've also,
you know, had some really nice, nice victories, certainly this
last one. He gets to the forty nine ers. They look
they had they they had rough starts, right, I mean,
they lose those first three games something by about you
know whatever, ten twelve points by the three games, and
so I can understand why there's a little frustration, but
they're fortunately they're in their division, which is them in
(40:11):
the colts, fighting for it, and although they're three and
four Dimico's, you know, I don't agree that to me
is just hating on us. I think that it's just
one of those things where I think that expectations were
to continue to see the acceleration. They haven't done that.
But it doesn't mean the meeting is against them, and
I don't think they will be. They've got a really
interesting game this weekend against the Denver Broncos that I'm
very fired up to see that they got back to
back AFC South games, which will be critical for them
(40:34):
to get back in this hunt. They're one of the
teams that I would have thought would be in the playoffs.
I thought they were in the layoffs at the start
of the season. It's going to be an uphill battle
because they still have some really tough ones. But they
got still both games against the Colts, and they got
the Chargers in the Chiefs game less. So there's a
lot of work to be done. But I think we'll
see consistency, but I think it might be a nine
and eight type of year.
Speaker 1 (40:54):
Mark, you're the best man. Have a happy Halloween. Thanks
much for joining us. We'll talk to you next week, coach,
I said, Alope, I will do. I will do. So
that's Mark Dominic. If you want to come Monday, I
got a ticket for you.
Speaker 6 (41:05):
I love that. I love that. I would love to
be there. The amazing congratulations, good luck. I'm sure it's
be fun.
Speaker 2 (41:11):
That's a no.
Speaker 1 (41:12):
By the way, that was an that was the nicest
nose of all time.
Speaker 2 (41:15):
Thanks. Thanks Mark,
