You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. What Up America, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Whoa Championship Weekend? Monday, you're
gonna wake up and go, Hey, I know who's going
to super Bowl. I know who's going to super Bowl.

(00:42):
I know who's going to the super Bowl. May congratulations.
Everybody's gonna know who's going to the super Bowl. But yeah,
you're gonna wake up Monday morning and no, just a
little programming notes something you should know. If Monday you're
gonna know who's going to the super Bowl, guess what
Wednesday is. You're like, well, it's two days later, Doug,
I'll still know who's going to the super Bowl. No, no, no, no,

(01:07):
this is a big, big, bigger stuff, bigger than who's
gonna go to the super Bowl. That's because Wednesday, the
Doug Gotlieb Show will be broadcast live from the Farmer's
Insurance Open a Tory Pines in San Diego. We are
bigger than the Super Bowl, Bigger, bigger. Tiger will be there.
I'll be there. Most importantly, UM, I think my guy

(01:27):
Hunter Mayhann is gonna be there, gonna stop by. We're
gonna have a lot of fun next week thanks to
the folks of the Farmer's Insurance Open. All right, it's
Championship weekend and we're gonna dive in with John middlecoff Man.
Do we have an unbelievable show UH special Thanks go
out to the folks at Panini who've gotten us all
some of these great guests, like Nick Chubb yesterday, like
Sam Donald. I'm gonna ask Sam Donald if he has

(01:50):
asked Adam Gaze what what was going on with his
eyes and what was he looking at during the press conference.
I'm gonna ask him. He joins us in one hour.
Jeff Schwartzel join us UH analysts for the Action Network,
and of course his brother Mitchell is a pro bowler
offensive lineman with the KANCI Chiefs. Will ask him to

(02:10):
break down these four games and obviously break down the
lines of these four games, and John Middlekoff is gonna
join us in fifteen minutes some of the things that
a former scout would look at. And then we also
want to ask him about Kyler Murray and some of
the conversations that he's heard and how he thinks he'll
be evaluated as now he's bade himself eligible for the
NFL Draft. A lot to get to, but let's start

(02:32):
with the news of the day. We were told there
would be no changes. Hey, no changes. Cowboys doing the
same thing. Remember he had Jerry Jones going back two
days ago saying, if I was the grade out these coaches,
I think they would grade pretty well. That's my Jerry.
It's okay, Like I feel like I do a better
than I do. Uh if I with it, But you

(02:53):
just have to. You have to. There's certain sellables you
have to If I was to grade out these quarters,
these coaches think they would greg pretty well. And then
news comes down today that Scott littahand offensed long time
offensive coordinator, has been fired, has been has been axed,

(03:16):
has been ousted. All right, that's enough, which which brings
us to do the Cowboys make change for change sake?
Or do they make change because it was literally because
it was definitely needed. And look, their offense steadily improved
when they had Amari Cooper, but there was a lack
of imagination with this offense. On the other hand, are

(03:39):
there limitations from your quarterback that make the limitations in
terms of the imagination um more apparent? Right, It's like, look,
would you like to have guys running more inventive stuff,
but maybe you have a quarterback who's not capable of
running that stuff and you wanted to be steady, and

(04:01):
you wanted to be And I give credit to Jason
Garrett who apparently pulled the trigger on this move himself.
This was not a Jerry Jones thing. This was a
Jason Garrett thing. And it doesn't appear that this is
a Jason Garrett thing that he felt like had to
do to save his job. He felt like it was
for the betterment of his team. But it's a weird

(04:23):
It's it's weird timing because so many of the talented
coordinators are already off the market right now. Look, it
is the Cowboys, and I've been told by several people
that Cliff Kingsbury would have been their preferred offensive coordinator

(04:44):
if this move had been made before Cliff Kingsbury one
signed on at USC and then two became the head
coach of the Arizona Cardinals. And I guess you can
find an offensive coordinator elsewhere. But this is really really interesting.
In Hey, yesterday, we told you if Lincoln Riley can
fix Jalen Hurts, what can he do in the National

(05:05):
Football League? Right, just dropped the mic. In college football,
you can make Jalen Hurts into a viable passer after
doing the same thing with Kyler Murray and making him
a Heisman Trophy winner, and the same thing with Baker Mayfield.
I mean that doesn't he become the next coach of
the Dallas Cowboys. Doesn't that become too obvious? So I
think it's I think it's it's several factors. One, it's

(05:29):
the reality that they're still kind of lame, kind of stale,
kind of limited offensively, and you couldn't make this move
mid season. You respected Linahan enough to allow him to
show improvement and not take the playbook from him, not
have Jason Garrett call plays. But you also have to
stop and look at and go like, look, these are
the guys we have. This is the quarterback we have.

(05:50):
Let's figure out a way to make it work. And
this move makes a lot more sense than some of
these potential coordinators becoming head coaches because they know Sean
McVeigh trying something new is great. You just can't try
something new in the middle of the season. It's really
really hard to change things up when guys are used

(06:12):
to doing doing something. So do I think that Jason
Garrett has heard from others in the organization and maybe
even his quarterback. Sure? Do I think he's heard from
people in the media. I don't think it's crazy to
think that the people he respects not necessarily typical media members,
but former players saying hang offense is kind of stale,

(06:33):
And I think you look around and you're like, well,
who are the best play callers in football? Sean Payton,
he's playing for a championship. Josh McDaniels, he's playing for
a championship. Andy Reid, he's playing for a championship. Sean McVeigh,
he's playing for a championship. And as much as Jason
Garrett has shown himself to be a coach who, for

(06:55):
the most part, is solid and steady and really good
at leading a team and good generally with quarterbacks and
deals well in terms of of how he's handled egos.
Jason Garrett has not does not call plays now and
needs to find an expert play caller. Every team does
this at the end of the season, where they call

(07:16):
guys in, they have the coaches come and everybody comes
in and they do exit meetings. And I'm sure then
you do the self assessment, the self scout, what do
we need to do better? And not taking advantage of
Ezeki Elliott in the passing game, not showing more inventive
ways to move the football was something you couldn't change
on the fly. But now that you have the gift

(07:37):
of the entire off season, you do it. So do
I love it? Not if it's only reaction to the
media or to the fans, But do I get it? Yeah?
I do. Look at the trend in the National Football League,
look at what's limited your team. Understand you have your quarterback.
You need to find a play caller who fits that
quarterback because that quarterback is not going anywhere. I do

(07:58):
I think that Dak Prescott does RBS to be a
top five paid quarterback. No, do I think the Cowboys
will probably overpay because you generally overpay for what you
have in in you're not going to reset the market,
but you do pay the next guy more money than
he probably should get, and there'll be some sort of
negotiation between long term stability, which Dac wants, and top dollar,

(08:20):
which Dak also wants. He's not going to get both.
If he wants the long term stability, he'll have to
take a little bit less. But this is your quarterback.
He has proven, at least to Jerry Jones and probably
to Jason Garrett that he's capable of being the starting
quarterback for a long time. Doesn't mean he's great. I
told you before, he's Saborrow Pizza. But you gotta find

(08:41):
a more inventive play caller who jobs, who fits better
with Dak Prescott because remember Scott Linahan was there back
when they had Tony Romo and you could have more
kind of mundane play calls. Why because you had the
inventive nature and the creativeness of Tony Romo, who found
a way to kept place, keep places alive. Ton Romo

(09:03):
is essentially Brett Farve in a Cowboys uniform. That's not
who Dac is. Find a coordinator, find a system that
mary's best with your quarterback. My guest would be it's
gonna be something where he's gonna be on the move more.
I've asked the NFL players, said, why don't they use
him as a runner more. He's got a big body,

(09:24):
he can he can run, he can move, Uh, he
can move the pockets some as well. He's not You're
not gonna stand back there and throw fifty balls and
pick a part of defense. That's not who he is,
but doesn't mean you can't win with him. And so
my guess is this is just a clear self assessment
of finding coordinator who fits with coach because they've topped

(09:46):
out in what they can do. Excuse me, finding coordinator
who fits with quarterback because they've topped out in what
they can do. In the marriage between now former offensive
coordinator Scott Linahan and Dak Prescott. I don't think this
was knee jerk. If it was, Lenahan would have been
gone as soon as the game was over. You would
have heard this news breaking on Monday. This feels like

(10:07):
it's after talking to all the players and the exit meetings,
and after thinking about it long and hard on how
to progress and take the next step with the Cowboys.
And if that's the thought process, that's the one I
agree with. Remarkable game last night in Oklahoma City between
the Thunder and the Lakers. To people who said the
Lakers won't play or aren't playing well or hard enough

(10:29):
for Luke Uh Luke Walton the Thunder. The Lakers essentially
beat the Thunder twice. Had the game one in regulation
and then fouled just a terrible foul and even worse
call with Lonzo Ball fouling Russell Westbrook up up three
but could have been called, and it was called in
the act of shooting three, so it became three free

(10:50):
throws went overtime. Lakers essentially beat the Thunder twice. I
think we can put to rest any of the Luke
might not make it until Lebron's back. That's done. We
continue to track not just the storms uh uh winter
Storm Harper, but will Bryce Harper or will many many
Machado sign a deal or will there be a number

(11:12):
with a two next to it? Since so far the
only number we've heard is the White Sox seven years
one and we got championship Sunday. I mean championship Sunday
so good, so damn good. Former NFL scout John Minelkoff
joins the show. I'll ask him about the Cowboys, what

(11:32):
offensive coordinator would both would would marry best with Dak Prescott.
Plus we'll break down both championship games and the weather
by the way, supposedly not terrible in Kansas City. All right,
all that's coming up next, But first, In sports, a
trade can make or break your team. We know that, right,

longtime friend of the program. And Sam has that quarterback

(13:48):
thing he does where and look we we've I've had
him on since he was a red shirt freshman at
usc Um after his the first game he got into
it at Utah, I think I had him on. But
so there is a connection there. We're both from Orange
County and I've really enjoyed getting to know him, know
his folks and people around him really really well, and

(14:09):
know he was a hooper hooper game respect game right, Um.
But he also does this thing and when anytime you've
heard him do an interview, you're like, man, do these
guys know each other really well? Like I know Sam
nor I'm not gonna sit here and say like we
will hang out when he comes back around where we
both kind of live. He just makes you feel that way,
and all the best do they just do. Brady has it? Um, Brady,

(14:36):
he doesn't have it. There's a little loof is there.
There's a little goofy this there. I hear, I hear
something I thought was amazing this week? Did you guys
hear James Harrison undisputed? Did you guys hear him this week?
James Harrison? Remember last year was with the Pittsburgh door
as they cut him and he went and he signed
with the Patriots. And he said, and I quote, I

(14:58):
wanted I to hate him, and then I started to
love him because he's the greatest leader I've ever seen.
And then he said, he told Tom Brady, hey man,
I wanted to hate you, but I can't. He just
has that thing that quarterback things. Sam Donald's got that
quarterback thing down. I don't know what it is, CAMPU

(15:22):
my finger on it, but he absolutely has it. Absolutely
has it anyway, Sam Donald. Uh top of Next Hour
on the Doug Gottlieve Show. Um, John Mitlokoff is gonna
We're gonna bump him back. Let's welcome in Jeff Schwartz.
The Schwartz is definitely strong with this one. He played

(15:42):
offensive line in the NFL for eight years. He owes
pack towel today on siries x M three seventy three years.
See him on the Action Network fall on Twitter at
Jeff Schwartz to see his disrespectful blocks. Let's start in
Kansas City. I heard Collins say something which I was like,
I don't even know what you're talking about, dude, Like
I and me, A lot of times Colin says things
but I don't know you're talking about and then he

(16:03):
ends up he does become right. Um, he said it
could be so cold in Kansas City that it mutes
out the cold. Now, it's not going to be that cold,
like seven degrees, and it doesn't feel like it's gonna
be ridiculous. But that does feel like a semi ridiculous statement,
is it? Well it minus fifteen, which it originally was

(16:24):
forecasted on Tuesday. Yeah, that would probably be tough for
everyone to be loud when it's that cold, but you know,
the warmer you get. And then now, like you mentioned,
it's not supposed to be that cold. No, that is
really no bearer I think on the crowd in general. Um,
so no, the cold should not matter. Now. I would
say though, if it was near zero degrees, I think
it would definitely benefit the patriots. It would slow the

(16:46):
chiefe up a little bit. And you're right, the crowd
probably would not be as loud if it was negative fifteen,
but that's not gonna be a problem with it being
twenty seven degrees a Sunday night. All right, So let's
let's get to what is important in this game. Let's
start with the Chiefs defense. They look decent last week.
I couldn't tell whether it was the lack of speed
and game plan from the Colts or the defense was decent,

(17:09):
Which was it breaking that game down? Well, the Chiefs
defensively are much better at home. Like they they they
give up I think almost ten less points a game
at home. Um what what's interesting if you look at
the numbers though, they actually are worse at home on defense,
just don't allow as many points. They're much more bend
but don't break at home. And I think their pass

(17:29):
rush has come alive recently too, with the crowd noise
at home, and once they get up on teams and arrowhead,
you kind of feel the team's panic. I think the
Colts did that too, right, you're down fourteen nothing, you
just panic, You got out of your game plan and
you kind of feed into the Chief's ability to rush
the pastor they're very good the season and rushing the
past her. So when you're down and what the Chargers

(17:50):
did in weeks sixteen, you have to just keep to
your game plan. The Chargers did that and New England
gets down early. They have to keep to their game plan,
which is which is run the football. Uh you know,
to put your short passes, take a couple of shots,
and play action. And if you can do that and
limit the possessions from Mahomes, it makes the chief offense
have to be kind of play perfect dish to score

(18:10):
enough points in this game. Do you say perfect ish? Yeah,
like you probably have. You always get if you get
eight or nine possessions, you get six or seven. Lets
you get six possessions, I mean you got you better
score on probably five of those that have to be touchdowns.
But if you punch the ball three times and seven possessions,
they're probably not winning the game, no question. Doug otlip
Show here on Fox Sports Tradeo. Where are you? What

(18:33):
is that sound in the background? I'm driving. I don't
know what. I'm always on the phone. One, I'm always driving.
When I called my kids up right now, I know it,
uh Ramas, how would you characterize the noise in the background?
There just ambiance. I would say, it's okay, it sounds
like he's driving a car. No, okay, it was just
just ambiance. Um, who do you can you pick against

(18:55):
your brother? Have you picked against your brother this year? Yeah?
I picked Seattle to be kids say, Um, I uh, look,
I think that the cheats. Um, it's the Patriots are
gonna have to play almost a perfect game and hope
for some turnover luck to beat the Chiefs. I mean,
the Chiefs have been a machine at home this yet
the average third two points a game at home, Like
I said, defensively, only give up about twenty three. I

(19:18):
just I gotta think the Chiefs just set up perfect
for them this year. They seem to have things rolling
there at home, and I think they get this. I
think they get done. I don't know if they cover.
I don't really feel a great betting this game, but
I think the Chiefs to win and went out right. Yeah,
I'm I tend to lean with you. I'll make my
pixel a little bit later on in the show. Um,
if Brady can win this game, what what does it

(19:41):
mean that Tom Brady? I don't I don't know. I
think the legacy is pretty much said I mean, I
don't think we appreciate by the way the dominance that
that that that he has that he has shown around
his scrumming thirteen uh conference championship games, eight super Bowls.
This is you know league by the way that that
promotes that has set up uh parody. Right. You have

(20:02):
a heart salary cap. You have a schedule based on
last year's results. So if you're a good team, to
get a tougher schedule. If you're a bad team, you
to eat your schedule and the little pictures just keep
winning out. It had to help them that the East
has been bad for the last twenty years outside of them.
But nonetheless, I don't think we appreciate quite how good
they've been. Concerned. When was the last time the NFC

(20:24):
had a repeat Super Bowl? Uh super Bowl team? Wait,
I can't even remember the last time it was so
uh it's pretty amazing what New England has done. But
you think Kansas City wins, let's go to the NFC.
I feel like the Saints haven't playing that well? Am
I wrong? This is interesting? Um, they had up until

(20:45):
last week if if you count the seven games of
Drew Brees started at home. Remember d you start a
reach seventeen, the average thirty seven points a game. They
had the three that three game stretch on the road Dallas,
Tampa and Carolina where they didn't score a lot of
points and we kind of wrote them off. Remember they
came home and scored third you one against against the
Steelers in that game, and then the you know, the
week sevent team they didn't play last week. It looked

(21:06):
like they were the only home team to have a
lot of rust. You know, if you breaches ted game
the first play of the game, they're up seven nothing,
the game is probably totally different. So they kind of
they played their poor game, you know, the poor half
a little bit. I think would be fun on Sunday.
They have two issues though, and all these teams are
relatively healthy except the Saints. They're they're missing. They're a
really good defensive tackle Shoo who really should have been

(21:28):
in the probe. I don't think he was Shoudren Rankins
against his Rams run game. That's gonna hurt them. And secondly,
their left guard Andre's Pete played last week. He had
hand surgery during the bye week to pick a messed
up hand, and he played. He didn't play it very
well on Sunday. Now he has Aaron Donald who's better
than Fletcher Cox, and that's an issue in my opinion.

(21:48):
They're they're left tackles also beat up the right. The
right tackles beat up. I liked the Saint tier, but
they do some question marks. So you like the Saints
to win the game. Yeah, I just I think the Dome,
in my opinion, is really formidable to play. And I've
played there a bunch, having been a Panther, and also
we played there when I was at the Giant Joe

(22:10):
Drew Brees the six and oh in that place just
des to Jared Goff has yet to win a big
road game. What does he want to figure? They lost
the Bears. Outside of the football right, haven't put a
road playoff game. It's a different animal having to fly
across the country and playing a road game. He has
not done that yet. I think we're already assuming that
the Rams offense, because they played well last week, is

(22:31):
gonna come in and be just fine. I'm not quite
sure about that. He hasn't had to do this yet,
So give me the team who's been here before. His
quarterback has done it before, his coach has done it before.
Who's to have players on the team that have won
Super Bowls? Give me that team over the team that
has not done anything really on the road in the playoffs. Ever,
what do you think that's of Scott Lindahan being let

(22:51):
go by the Cowboys? They have to do this for
a couple of reames. One is that they need to
see what they have in Dak. I feel like if
you continue to run that can servod offense they have.
Don't really know if he is going to be your guy.
You're probably gonna pay him anyways, because you kind of
have to kind of stuck right now. But now we'll
get a real, real good sense of what he is.
But secondly, the one thing that I have not understood

(23:13):
this whole time, it's how Jason Garrett has escaped blame
for this offense. He is a former quarterback. He is
sitting in the offensive meetings. He might not call the plays,
but he is designing this offense. He is a hand
in this. If he doesn't coach the offense, what if
he doing He's not coaching the defense, just sitting in
his office all day playing the solitaire in his computer.
He's coaching the offense. So the idea that that Garrett

(23:34):
escapes blame in their offense, I think is bs. It
is nothing that I've ever seen an offensive coach do
in in an offense. They're in those meetings, they're designing
the offense. If they tell Suttland Ahn, I want you
to be aggressive this game, then Scot's gonna be aggresive
this game. So the idea that Garrett is blameless in this,
I think is totally off is totally off base. I
don't think he's blameless, Okay, in faris, I don't think

(23:56):
he's blamed this um but I but I also think,
and this is really important to point out, I think
that some of the reason that their offense is limited
is they believe Dac has limitations and they want to
put him in the best right. Like everybody said, well,
you know, like why don't we air raid offense? Throw
it down, like that's not who he is, That's not

(24:19):
who he is, right, And I agree with that. But
the problem is Cowboys fans just don't. I'm just telling
you guys like this like that I agree with you,
and this is why I want to see him in
a different offense. And just if you look at Dak
this year even with the Mark Cooper, right, how often
were we like, Wow, what a throw Doc made? Versus Wow,
what a runner Marie made? Right? I mean even watching

(24:40):
him play against Russell Wilson and Jared Goff. Like Russell Wilson,
you're like, Wow, great throwing, fourth and six, great catch
by the wide receiver. Like with Dak, it's like, oh yeah,
good throw, great great run by a Marke. It's never
like Wow, what a throw by Dak Prescott. So that
to me is some of the limitations. He doesn't make
a lot of wow throws. Now, maybe the new offer
c will and we'll find out. Jeff Schwartz joining us

(25:04):
on the Doug Gatlup Show on Fox Sports Radio, help
me out with the Antonio Brown thing, right, Like, I
think we all agree he's super talented, but obviously he's
a pain in the you know what um And this
if the Steelers get rid of him, it means they
really don't want him around because it's twenty one million
dollar cap hit. But it doesn't feel like there's nearly
the market for him that there have been for lesser players,

(25:26):
even though everyone agrees he's a great player. Is it
just the money or is it more to it? I mean,
hiss age ready thirty one years old. Um, you could
go find yourself another wide receiver. I just think, generally speaking,
and I've been this way for a while, running backs
and wide receivers are not as valued outside of their
teams as fans think they are. Right, So you might
pay a wide receiver a lot of money, but as

(25:48):
they age, while you think they're great, the rest of
the NFL is like, I could, I'll find another wide receiver.
You know, I'll find someone else. Amari Cooper is young, right,
so she traded for him and he makes a big deal.
O'Dell is still young. Those guys have a big trade market.
Antonio Brown, the drama he started on social media, the
drama in the building, plus his age. I think teams
are like, you know what, I'm I'll pass on on

(26:10):
bringing a guy like that. I can't see him back
in Pittsburgh. He's trying to force his away out. Obviously,
it's very clear that, um, someone will do it. Probably
the Raiders. They'll they'll trade one of their first round
draft picks and he'll just go into Oakland or something
like that, or Las Vegas wherever they end up. Um,
but that's spotsify why that their age combined with the
diva and just there's not a lot of value outside

(26:31):
of your own team for wide receivers. I disagree with
you on the Raiders, Like everything they've done has has
said we need to build a team and not put
a bunch of salary cap on one guy or you know,
especially a guy who's not your quarterback. That would be
a complete violation of of of the plan that had
been in place. Um but but but but we'll see.

(26:52):
Because this is not a one year contract, there's like
three more years of legit money on that day. That's
a bad contract that he has, especially considering how he's
how he's handled, how he's purported himself. Last thing, Kyler Murray,
five quarterback, Will it work? Probably not. Look Russell Wilson.
Everyone says, well, Russell Wilson story. Yeah, he's also like

(27:13):
two five. He's put together really well. If you remember
in the in the semifinal game, Quinn Williams, the Alabama
defensive tackle, probably a top five pick, he tackled Kyler
Murray by his shirt, like, by his shirt sleeve, like,
not even the shoulder pad. He grabbed him by his
shirt sleeve and threw him down to the ground. Right,
Kyler Murray is small man and he's going to get
killed the National Football League. Well, I think he'll be

(27:35):
drafted high. Maybe if he comes in like at five
nine and a half and like two oh five to
ten and to put some weight on maybe. Um, but
I'm I'm willing to see him try it. I'm not
gonna say he can't do it, but I wouldn't draft him.
I think I've heard this analogy. And look, take away
the personalities of Johnny manziel And and and Kylin Murray.
They're completely different, but just as kind of a football player.

(27:58):
You know, teams when it came to Johnny and Sell said, yeah,
he's a first round telling, I just won't draft him.
It feels like that's the way teams are saying now,
like yeah, I could see him in the first round,
I just won't do it. Yeah, yeah, I've heard. I
mean an NFL personnel guy. This is a couple months ago.
I was one of the first ones to start saying, hey,
money wise, it's actually better to be in the NFL
as a starting quarterback than it is than is to

(28:19):
be in the minor leagues in Major League Baseball, and
I think somebody will overdraft him. The personnel guy I
talked to us like, look, I think he's Doug Flutie
with with Mike Vick's athleticism. That said, like Doug Flutie
was really struggled back then because he couldn't see. There's
just plays he can't see because he's so small. Yeah,
I mean, and look, the one thing you can say

(28:39):
to that, though, will say is that his offen Fine
Oklahoma was ginormous and that didn't seem to bother him
very much. But then you're really limited to just a
shotgun office. Which look, the Chiefs and Patriots turn shotgun
like seven percent of the game, So it's not like
anything that's that's new to the NFL, but you're basically
limited to being shotgun if you're couding through Kylin Marine again.
You know the time I just go back to when Hello,

(29:01):
nod a hit hit r G three that one time
and look at our three body just crumbled in a half.
I mean, he's going a hit like that at shud
pounds by by defensive lineman and he's gonna break his
collar bone. I mean, some of the bad's gonna happen.
I just I can't see that size working out where woman,
And then I tend I tend to agree with you.
Great stuff as always, Shorts Jeff Schwartz. Check him out

(29:23):

you can hear Sundays on Fox Sports Radio Sunday morning

(29:43):
when you wake up getting ready for Championship Sunday. What
you got Dan, Doug. We've got some news about the
NFC Championship game that is just coming in and ESPN
reports is that says that the Saints won't have ten
and Ben Watson for that matchup against the Rams because
I'm an appendix issue. Pendicitis for Ben Watson has miss
practice a couple of times this week and now won't

(30:05):
play of the NFC Championship game. He's like the best guy,
I mean, like one of the one of those top
five human beings in the nash Football He got things
for him. Yes, No, Ben Watson on Sunday Chief should
have Eric Barry back. He's gonna return to play of
the a f C Championship game despite his heal injury.
According to the NFL Network and as you and Jeff
Schwartz discussed, Cowboys today moved on from offensive coordinator Scott Linahan.

(30:29):
It wasn't a firing, apparently, at least according to the
statement released by the Cowboys, where Jason Barrett said it
was a mutual decision to part ways after five seasons.
Some news from the NBA. De Marcus Cousins makes his
Warriors debut tonight against the Clippers. Says there's no way
you're gonna see him play thirty minutes in his first
game since rupturing is achilles last season. Lakers point guard

(30:51):
Rajon Rondo has been cleared to practice following surgery on
his finger last month. He's been out since Christmas Day
and was expecting him hiss four to five weeks. No
word when he'll get back to game action. Angels sound
reliever Cody Allen to a one year deal. That'll fix
you in Ryan's team for sure. Um I mean one
year deal for Cody Allen. That according to Ken Rosenthal,
let's say we're going to the World Series Music Music.

(31:13):
That's all right to start the parade, playing the parade,
Cody Allen shutting the door and the bottom of the
ninth at the big A while you and Ryan sit
right by each other cheering on in that game. Seven. Uh.
Deal could be worth more than eleven million dollars. Phil
Mickelson still has the lead of the Desert Classic. He's
at twelve under par even par today through thirteen holes,
twelve under par hill here for a birdie and it's sorry.

(31:36):
That was my golf. Golf. That's pretty good, right, sure, yeah, yeah.
And the reason they whisper is a lot of times
it's because they're just by the eighteenth hole. You know,
they're right above the green by the seventeen. You gotta
gotta do that. Maria's Cheropobo upset to fitting Jim Caroline

from farmers from a dog accidentally flooding a living room
to a dog taking a joy ride, We've covered it.

(32:20):
Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two. Because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers under
written my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products
unavailable in every state. Don't Doom't doom um. You know
it's interesting. Is I personally really really like bad weather football.

(32:43):
I would never go to We talked about this yesterday.
I wouldn't go to these games, but I do feel
like football is supposed to be played in weather. In weather,
here's something fascinating. It's not supposed to be that cold
in Kansas City. The snow and cold is actually gonna
be in Foxboro, which like it's one of those deals

(33:05):
where you know, I don't think the Patriots were good enough,
but they gotten home field advantage you would have been.
You would have said, there going like, are you kidding me?
Another Patriots game in the snow? What are the chances?
Of course they're gonna win this thing, but they're both
cold weather teams. Sometimes we do take little things make

(33:26):
them into big things. Um yeah, I just obviously Brady
is when when Brady's when we put the headstone up
on his career, right the tombstone up, the headstone on
his his career, I would put it up as most decorated,
most successful quarterback of all time. I don't think he's

(33:49):
the best quarterback of all time, but I can, I
can evolve, I can come around to it, because I mean,
what he's doing with this group and and granted, you know,
winning one game at home against the Chargers, you spit
up all over themselves. Let's not like act like this
was some murderers row that he had to go through.
But if you go through Kansas City on the road,
and you can go through, for example, the Rams, who

(34:12):
we all would agree they have great talent, super super talented,
maybe more so than the Saints. And the Saints are good.
I'm not trying to dismiss the Saints team. The Rams
have more top end talent. You beat those two teams
to the most talented to the best teams in football,
or you know, you need meet the Saints as well.
Now we can talk about what a great runner was,

(34:32):
but anyway, Brady's gift is he's the best cold weather
quarterback of all time. Right. That's the crazy thing about
Brady is his ability to to make these plays. And
the Patriots ability to make plays in bad weather has
been paramount to their success. Right, So man, like, look

(34:56):
last week it was freezing cold in Foxborough. They were fine.
There was ice some snow in Kansas City and the
Chiefs were fine. We do make, you know, big little
things into big things, and that that's that's the truth
in sports this time of year. And you know, could
this cold and ice and the wind or whatever? Could
that cost Pat Mahomes to try and throw a ball

(35:16):
he normally completes and he hasn't been as good quarterback
ratings only, but I think sixty two in cold weather?
Could it be a factor? Sure? But I like the weather.
I I I get that the Saints get the benefit
of home field and we get a more a more
true champion when we play Super Bowls indoors. You know

(35:38):
when for footballs go further, whether it's kicked or thrown,
it's much more pure. But I'm excited, and I don't
think whether one it doesn't look like it's gonna be
that factor or two should be really a determining factor
in uh, in how we later evaluate this game. With
exception of Tom Brady has been the most successful cold

(35:58):
weather quarterback of all time. Doug got Leap Show here

I am? I know, Ramo says, Rama's you having a
party at the house. Yes, We're gonna get crazy. I'm

(37:01):
wearing my Rams hat right now, Doug, fantastic fired up
for you. Ramos of course, expecting baby number three and
expecting a super Bowl from his Rams. He's been ram
since day one. And I'm not talking about day one
when they moved back to l A from St. Louis.
I'm talking about day one, day one. He's old school.
Let's get you to Dan Bayer with the game. This

(37:25):
is game tied on the Doug Gottlieb Show. M hmmm, Dan,
what's the game today? Dog? The game today is you
should like this? It's psychic, of course, psychic, psychic. Psychic
is the game? Or excuse me, psychic? Well, John Ramo's

(37:48):
name is third child Dexter Fowler Jr. If they went
on Sunday, do you see that's happening? No? No, uh no,
al like it will be resided field in Kansas City
have any role in Sunday's a f C Championship game. Yes, yes,
it will. I love the idea of residing a field

(38:10):
when it's freezing cold outside. Like again, I didn't. I
didn't study horticulture in college at Oklahoma State or turf
management like you Canada, SU or Clemson. I know has
a great turf management school, but I'm just guessing here.
It's gotta be pretty difficult. Gotta be pretty difficult to
grow grass in freezing temperatures and to get it to

(38:32):
really stick to the surface. I think it's gonna be
a major factor. Okay, psychic, and it's gonna hurt the
KANC Chiefs. Frankly, who is the NFL player that no
one is talking about today that we will be talking
about on Monday? Great question, Rob Gronkowski, Rob Gunkowski. No,
everybody's just well, he's old, he's slow. They use him

(38:54):
in the run game because he can't because he can block,
but he can't catch anymore. Rob Gronkowski. I thought maybe
it was Steve yawn You know that's I wasn't sure
you hught me yawning. Come on, hey, Yeah. A lot
has been talked about this week about the crowd noise
at the Superdome, with some of the Rams saying that
it wasn't an issue the first time the team's played
in the regular season. Will the Rams be affected by

(39:17):
the Superdome in Saints crowd on Sunday? Uh no, no, no, no,
I mean I don't think so. Um, Cam Jordan is
gonna have a better get off, but it's not like
they have the type of pass rush that makes people
quake in their boots. They got a really good defense.
They will get some turnovers if it was Kansas City.

(39:39):
To me, that crowd noise helps that team. That The
thing is both of these quarterbacks are gonna get rid
of it really quickly. The other part of it is
Sean Payton has actually told the fans, like, you guys
need to be loud when Sean McVeigh is in the
ear of Jared Goff, Like he said, like, you guys
need to be loud early in the play, callock so
he can't communicate as well. Yeah. Interesting, Um, psychic, what

(40:01):
transfer quarterback made the best decision for himself? Good question? Yeah,
that's good question. All of them, because none of them
are gonna start where they were before, right, I mean
that's the um. Okay, so we got Jalen Hurts at Oklahoma,
Justin Fields at Ohio State, Tate Martell, and Austin Kendall
pick one. Yes, I'll go Justin Fields because I think

(40:21):
he's gonna be surrounded by the best talent and uh,
he wasn't gonna play wasn't gonna start at Georgia with
from still there. I'm gonna go with Justin Fields. Psychic.
Will DeMarcus Cousins record a double double that the season
debut tonight for the Warriors? Yes, yes, he will a
double double and if not, he may eat a double dumb. Finally, Psychic,
who should be on upset alert of the top five

(40:44):
of college hoops this week? And of course you have
number one Duke taking on number four Virginia. You're at
number two, Michigan at Wisconsin, Alabamas at number three Tennessee
fifth ranking Zaga at Portland. Is Duke still number one
for this week? Because they lost then one day they
lost on Monday, so it'll it'll they won't be maybe
on Monday, that's right now, they won't be there. They well,

(41:07):
they beat Virginia didn't probably won't be. Michigan would be.
I think Michigan should be on an upset alert at
Wisconsin desperately need of a victory. I'll go with with
with with Michigan. This is game time on the Duck
Gottlieb Show. Join The Doug Gotlieb Show next Wednesday. Buyer
will be there, I'll be there, music will be there.

talk about championship Sunday upcoming. We got some college basketball talk,
some NBA talk may work in a phone call. Who knows.
I'm feeling that way on a Friday. And of course
you can always hit us up on Twitter at Gottlieb Show.
But let's talk some NFL with a guy we've had

(42:31):
on going back to early on his college days. Wasn't
that long ago? Sam Donald joins the starting quarterback New
York Jet QB one uh, got a season under his belt,
already gotten his coach fired. See that you did, Sammy,
You get your coach fired. Sam joined somebody half of
Pennini where he's signing NFL trading cards in Los Angeles.
Been a gloomy week here in l A. But thanks

(42:52):
so much, Sam for taking time out of your day.
How would how would you characterize your rookie season the NFL? Yeah, um,
a lot of learning experiences, you could definitely say that,
And you know, I'm just I'm just really excited about
I think more so than anything. It just there are

(43:13):
so many games. I feel like there were UM four
or five games that we lost where we were we
were winning going into the fourth quarter. UM, And I
think you know obviously that you know, obviously you don't
want that to you don't want to lose those games
with the games that you should win. UM. But I
think that just kind of shows our promise and UM,
it shows that we're capable of winning a lot of games.

(43:33):
And UM, I think that this team is and I
think we're we're primes to be able to do that
and to be able to go on a run next
year and and really kind of just just grow off
what we did this year. You know, there were a
lot of UM, a lot of guys that stepped up, UM,
a lot of new coaches that stepped up for this team,
and UM, you know, I'm just really excited to kind

(43:54):
of build off of that. And I think, you know,
with coach Gates and UM now coach Greg Williams coming
in and being able to help out the defense, you know,
I think I think there's a lot of upside to
what we to what we can do and you know,
what we're capable of. So as a whole, you know,
I'm just really really excited. I'm really really excited about
getting to work with coach Jason in this offense. Any

(44:16):
idea what he was looking at during the press conference? Um? No,
no idea. Did you did you ask him? Did you
go like, dude, what what? What? What happened there? Do
you you do? You even like, No, I wasn't going
to mention it, you know, if if if anyone was
going to mention it, you know, I think I wanted
to him to bring it up first. But but no,

(44:38):
I think you know, Coach Gates is awesome. Uh. You
know I talked to him. I talked to him there, um,
you know, right before the higher became official, and you know,
just kind of talked about where we want to seem
to go and and you know, kind of where we
see the offense headed. And he has some really really
good ideas, UM, some really good thoughts. And I'm it's

(45:00):
really excited to hopefully, um, hopefully here soon. UM. I
mean obviously within the rules of the c b A,
but hopefully here soon we can get together and talk
about this offense a little bit more and and go
go in depth a little bit. Doug gotlip show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Sam Donald is our guest. You
mentioned it's a great learning experience. Give me something you learned.

(45:21):
What what? What specifically did you learn? Yeah, you know,
I think, um, just learning about the game, because I
think a lot of people don't realize this. The common
fan doesn't realize it as much. But um, definitely as
a player who just came from college, UM, there's a
lot there's a huge difference between college football and NFL football,

(45:42):
just in the way it's played. You know. I think
college is so much more tempo and it's like, Okay,
we just got to score more points than the other team,
whereas NFL is so much more of a chess game.
I feel like, and um, you know you're playing you're
playing more of the field position game and um, you know,
as a quarterback, you become a little bit more conservative
with the ball and um, which I think is what

(46:03):
I learned throughout the throughout the year. And I think
the last few games kind of showed that I felt
like I was a little bit more um, consistent with
where I was going to the football and um, if
nothing was there, I was going to check the ball
down and let my guys, you know, go to work.
And I think that's the biggest thing is for me. UM,
the biggest thing that I learned, UM, for me, was
just putting the ball in play, you know, and I

(46:23):
think putting it in whether it's a running back or receiver,
tight end, UM, just putting it in someone's handle, ining
and go get some yards. And you know, we gotta
you know, in the open field, gotta make people miss,
Gotta gott to create chunk players on our own. And UM,
I think that's that's kind of the name of the game.
And UM, I learned a lot, you know, this this season,
especially UM. You know, I would especially say, you know,

(46:46):
after that first half where UM, you know, things necessarily
didn't go my way and UM had some games where
I performed pretty poorly. UM, and then I got hurt
there in the middle, and learned a ton from from
Joshua Town And UM, I think I just learned how
to be consistent and and how to be consistent not
only on the field during Sundays, but also UM putting
together great weeks you know, in the film room and

(47:08):
walk throughs in practice. I think I learned I learned
a ton from Josh and Jeremy Bates and and mich Lombardi,
Davis Webb, all those guys that that worked so hard,
um to kind of put this thing together and make
it run. Um. So you know, I just I think
I just learned a ton Throughout the whole year. There
was a lot that I could have learned from, but
I think that um specifically, you know, just kind of

(47:30):
learned how to manage a game and um, you know,
how to play the NFL game was was the biggest
thing that I land. You know, a lot of people
uh talked about Josh and his influence on you. Heck,
he's even like a member of your family, right, like
your mom and dad come up and and and and
talk to him about above talking to you. What is
that so? So what is he really like? How has

(47:50):
he been so helpful to you? He's amazing? Um, you know,
I can't can't say enough great things about him. Um,
He's just helping so many ways. I mean. Um. It
was interesting though, because during the beginning of the year,
when I was starting and going through walk throughs and um,
you know, practice, Josh wanted to make sure that he
wasn't saying as much as he necessarily thought, or you know,

(48:14):
maybe wanted to just because you know, it was my
time to kind of trying to take over and and
kind of just make it my team, my offense. And
you know, and then once I got hurt and I
was able to see the way you know he wanted it,
you know, UM, because it's one thing of trying to
explain it to someone what she tried to do in
the beginning. UM, which by the way, he did a

(48:35):
great job of. Um, I just must must have not
got it. UM. And then once he got out there
and I was like, oh, that's exactly what he was
talking about. Or you know, that's how you do a walkthrough,
and that's what he meant by, UM, speed up the
time in the walkthrough because you know, we're we're a
little time crush. We want to get extra plays and
so UM, just kind of the sense of urgency that
he had throughout the week is is exactly what UM,

(48:57):
I think I was lacking in you know, the beginning
of the year. And UM, I think I just learned
a ton of little things like that from Josh and UM.
But you know what, I think the biggest thing that
I learned from Josh is how to be off the field. UM.
You know, the kind of personality is off the field
with his kids and and his wife and um, with
with all of the guys in the locker room. I
think that says more than anything about Josh and kind

(49:19):
of how much he cares about everyone. You know. What's
funny is I think a lot of guys, a lot
of people think jets New York City that you're gonna
hang like the facility is nowhere near New York City
and you only you only go in if you really
want to go in. Like, how how close the facility
you live? Yeah, so I live right by the facility.

(49:42):
I live about probably like a two three minute drive
from the facility. Um and so without being said, you know,
I'm pretty far away from the city. So but it's
nice because I get a nice place to a nice
quiet place where I can sit down and and focus
on my work, focus on football. And then you know,
if I want to get away or my family's in town,
we want to go to a nice dinner. Um, Jersey

(50:04):
was great places to go eat. But you know, if
we want to really um, you know, go to Manhattan
or you go to you know one of those nice
places in the city, we can so um. No, it's
just a really nice place to be able to be out,
to be quiet, and then whenever we want to go
and and have you know, kind of that night out
with the family or with my teammates who came. How

(50:25):
long did it take you to get used to having
somebody else pump your gas? Because if people don't know,
in New Jersey you actually are not allowed to pump
your own gas. How long that did you get used to? Yeah,
you know, it took a while, I'm gonna be honest. Um,
you know it was. But but at the same time,
you know, after after you get used to, it's kind
of nice because you're sit in your car, especially it's cold.

(50:46):
But uh no, it's funny because Josh. The first time
that happened to Josh, Josh got out to pump his
own gas and uh, the guy was like, you know,
just trying to take his card from him, and Josh
was like, whoa bro, what are you doing? Back off?
And Josh got kind of hostile towards the guy, and
the guys like no, like it's illegal to pump your
own gas here. So um, Josh was like okay, and um,

(51:09):
but I thought that was kind of funny, and you know,
it's it's a it's a little bit different, but yeah, um,
I've gotten used to it now. And when it gets
cold a specially, it's kind of nice. We're gonna see
a couple of the all time greats do it, and
a couple of young guys do it, Guys that you
know really well, Mahomes and and and Jared Golf. Um,
you got chance see Brady up close and personal. Of

(51:30):
course you've watched him for years. What about Brady did
you not know that you know now having seen him
on the same football field that you played on. Yeah,
I think kind of what I mentioned earlier. Uh, just
he's just a total game manager. Um, he just he
understands where he goes to football. Um. It's so funny though,
because you know, I'm sitting there on the sideline and

(51:51):
um watching him move around, and he's honest, to be honest,
he's just slow. You know, he's he doesn't move very fast.
He's he's just very methodical. And um, you look up
and he's already you know, he's got a five minute
drive and he's already down there. And you know, um,
scoring touchdowns from the ball are gronk right on the money.
You know, back shoulders, um, finding a wide up and

(52:12):
edelment in the end zone. So um, it's just you know,
it's it's crazy, you know, to be able to be
able to watch him play and make it look so easy. Um,
but I think it's more of a testament. Um. And
this is why I have so much respect for him now,
you know, playing my first year in the NFL, of
just how easy he makes it look, because it's not.
It's not that easy and um, but it's just I

(52:34):
think it's just a testament to kind of how how
hard he works. And um, all the work that he's
put in every single offseason and during the year especially
great stuff. Hey dude, thanks to the good folks, Panini.
Pretty cool to be looking at your own trading card
right now that you're signing for. That's a that's a
that's a cool deal. Do you have one up in
the frame at the house and saying are your parents house? Definitely? Uh,

(52:55):
well my dad might. My dad might have a frame,
but you know, I'm not sure. Um, but it's definitely
a cool deal, man. I mean, um, to be here
with Pannini and Panini has been with us US rookies
who are here, UM since the since really the process started, um,
you know, right when we decided to leave for the
NFL draft. So UM, you know, Panini has kind of

(53:16):
been there, um this whole way, and UM, I wouldn't
want to work with anyone else. You know, They've been
amazing and UM, you know every single event that we
go to UM to sign cards and to kind of
hang out in their lounge areas that they that they
put on it's it's uh, it's great. You know that
there are a class act and you know I'm not

(53:37):
you know, again, I wouldn't want to be with any
other training card company. But it is funny because you know,
growing up collecting cards, UM, you know MLB Upper deck cops,
all those cards, UM, that I collected when I was younger. UM,
it's so weird. You know when I first saw the card,
my rookie card, I was just like, man, you know,
this is it's getting pretty real. Um. And this was

(53:59):
before the rookie season obviously, but um man, it's it
is pretty insane. It is pretty surreal to be able
to see your face and your name and your college
stats on on that card. It's it's awesome and um
honestly something I'm doomed of. Yeah, and you got the
swatches at the little Jersey swatches on the Panini cars
as cool as well. Hey, well, welcome back home. Uh sorry,

(54:19):
we couldn't do more for the about the weather for you, Um,
I don't know. I mean it's it's it's insane, but
the surface up so hopefully you get a chance to
hit a little bit in sanchiment. Thanks for joining us, dude, Yeah, awesome, thanks,
I appreciate well. Pleasure is all ours. That's Sam Donald,

out podcasts, as well as My All Ball podcast on
the Herd podcast network. He joins us every week not
just to promote the pod, but also talks some ball
with us. Let's let's start with news of the day.

(56:45):
Scott Nahan out with the Dallas Cowboys. Right move, wrong move,
alright move, that they needed to shake something up their offense.
Felt you know, a little stale in this in the
league that was just changing offensively at a rapid pay
eight but just firing the guy. And now you've got
to get the right guy right I mean, they have

(57:05):
a offensive head coach that does not call plays. He's
basically just you know, a CEO, which there aren't as
many of those anymore, you know. I mean, most offensive
head coaches are the play callers McVeigh, Peyton, Andy Kyle.
I mean that's usually that's where all these guys this
offseason were hired. So I I think you kind of

(57:27):
got to do some introspection, go, well, it can could
Jason call the place? Or is that just not even
on the table. Why are we paying him seven eight
nine million dollars? You know? So I think it's the
right move to move on. But who are they going
to hire? You tell me? That's a great question. I mean,
I I was a g A at Fresno State in

(57:47):
the late two thousands when Kellen Moore and it was
just reported that he's gonna stay and everyone's looking for
these young hot shots. He was obviously an incredible college player,
not really an NFL guy, but somehow he made it
because he was really smart. Of coaches loved him. He's
like thirty years old. Chris Peterson Toddham, his dad was
a high school coach. I mean, he feels like he's
on the track, you know, to be one of these

(58:09):
young head coaches one day. Uh, why not just do that?
You like him enough to keep him on the staff.
Now they have a lot on the line in the
sense that they have this kind of ready made team.
So it would be risky, but I mean, what do
you really have to lose in terms of this guy
knows your team. He's been coaching Deck, so he's a
quarterback guy. He is a quarterback at heart. He's young

(58:32):
and was raised by Peterson that was you know, a
pretty outside the box offensive thinker, well before that was
even sexy like ten years ago, and kind of put
Boise on the map. I don't think that would be
that crazy at all. I don't either, especially because, um,
it would bring some familiarity, right, You're not bringing in
a guy who doesn't know the culture, doesn't know Deck

(58:54):
at all. And and uh and and that is something
that that Deck needs. Here here is the big question.
Does what does Dak actually have the ability to do
that he's not doing? I mean probably nothing. I Mean
he's the crazy thing about Dad because he's probably relatively
capped out, you know, just his physical abilities are kind
of limited. Uh, maybe become a little bit more consistent

(59:17):
as a deep ball thrower. But he's never gonna be
some Drew Brees Tom Brady picking apart player. I mean
more than likely. Uh so, yeah, that's the question. I mean,
Scott Linnahan might tell you over beers, like what else
could we have done? I mean, that's that that's actually
my that's one of my plays was like, well why
didn't they do? Like because that's who he is, right,
he could be a little bit better when he's at

(59:39):
his best, but there's some time you just you don't
want to put a guy in a position to fail.
I think the hard part is if you're Jerry just
man for man their roster, especially once they got a Maori.
Obviously the defense was loaded, they had Zeke. Even their
offensive line took a step back, it was still really
good relative to the rest of the league. Atamar Gal

(01:00:00):
it's not bad at all. Like their roster on paper
was really good. You could argue they almost underachieved, you
know this year. Now, if your quarterback play is somewhat limited,
that's you know, a major issue. I actually like Dak
I think more than the casual guy does, but his
physical limitations as just a pure thrower, like he's a
really good runner like cam Cam Newton level, like physical runner,

(01:00:23):
can break tackles. Now, that's not really sustainable, but living
in kind of the moment of this year and next year,
you can. You can do it because you're just whatever.
I wouldn't pay him this offseason. That's another thing, like
what what is the rush to pay Dak Prescott this
enormous amount of money? Just let him play his fourth
year on his contract and if he wins some playoff games,
then think about it. You know, I, I just don't

(01:00:44):
see the rush on paying him. I completely agree with you.
Why why would you know? And if he's mad about it,
there's nothing. There's literally nothing you can do. But what's
gonna do? Right? And and then and then, by the way,
you know, even the next year, you don't have to
be you can just franchise Tag if he doesn't like it,
him like you you got him. That's part of the deal.
Man's a business. You've got other better players, you know

(01:01:05):
DeMarcus Lawrence, Uh, you know Marie Cooper's contract Now he's
headed in the fifth year option. I'd even argue why
even pay him are yet? Because what Hi plays when
you're on the fifth year old. I don't see the
rush to always pay these guys. Now when you have
like I don't even know if there's a guy in
the like Mahomes or whatever. When a guy is so good,
you know he's gonna be your quarterback for the next
fifteen years. Yeah, and then it's a no brainer. But

(01:01:25):
if you have any question marks, what's the rush, I'm
not really sure, but people seem seem to want to
rush to pay these guys, you know, millions and millions
of dollars, as if that's somehow going to make them
more loyal or somehow make them play play play better
or play uh yeah, to make a play better, which
it just there's there's no there's no correlation, there's no

(01:01:46):
proof of that actually occurs anyway, Doug got Sometimes it
goes the other way, pressure on them, you know, once
they get paid. Doug gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's get you to um Let's get to the champ
and Chief games. Colts looked cold, Colts looked slow, and
they're playing outdoors now they're a dome team. But there

(01:02:07):
was there was just a talent gap between the two teams.
Is there the same talent gap between the Patriots and
the Chiefs. No, because Belichick, you know, closes that gap.
You probably could argue, I mean the Colts just have
I mean all those the the offensive lineman, Darius Leonard.
I mean, they might just have better players. I mean
t Y Hilton's probably better than any wide receiver you

(01:02:29):
know the Patriots have. But but Belichick is the great
wild card and all this, uh historically he's owned Andy.
Now this team, you know, in a vacuum like this
two thousand eighteen team, to me is just not as
good as all these previous ones in the last six
or seven years. But they still have that championship pedigree
and that that clearly matters. But you know, three years ago,

(01:02:51):
probably the year, i mean the year they didn't make
it to the Super Bowl recently, when Denver got him,
they lost on the road, Gronk was injured, unlike this
year where he's just kind of a shell of himself.
But they use them in different They're using them like
an offensive tacklers running the ball all the time, and
the Chiefs are susceptible to that. Uh. But you know,
it just kind of it kind of feels like the
Chiefs time. I mean, as corny as that sounds, I mean,

(01:03:13):
you know, I have they been to the Super Bowl
and the you know, in the last forty years. It
feels like all those NFL films, Hank Shram videos, it's
the last time they ever played in the game. It
hadn't we even won a playoff game at home like
twenty five years up until last weekend. I just think
that it's just Andy Mahomes, just the ultimate combination. And
it doesn't look like it's gonna be as cold as
it looked, you know, five or six days ago. So

(01:03:36):
I just think the Chiefs win, and I don't. You
can't make a habit betting against Brady and Belichick. You'd
lose a lot of money that way. But it just
it just feels like this is a year they're just
gonna come up a little short. Um, okay, So give
me a game plan that works for the Patriots to
win this game. Uh, you know, you probably you need

(01:03:56):
some turnovers from the Homes because clearly last week you
saw like he's not affected by the quote unquote pressure
of a January game. He looked like it was just
September eight, you know, just slinging it around, No big deal. Uh,
you just probably try to fool him, give him looks.
And I saw at a press conference this week he said,
you know, of the two teams that he thought the

(01:04:18):
game plan that they had practiced all week and then
it was different in the game this year, was Baltimore
and in New England, kind of fooled him, gave him
some different looks. So Belichick's the you know, the king
of that, right. He he has things in the bag
that he just holds to use against especially young players.
Uh So it's just you gotta rattle Mahomes, whether that's

(01:04:39):
through pressure, whether that's through different coverage looks. Uh, you
just gotta find a way to make him uncomfortable. And
you know, you could argue he hasn't really looked uncomfortable
at all of the majority of the season. That's you know,
Belichick would be the first guy to really kind of
go wow, especially at home. You know, he's played really
well there. I think it's gonna be difficult. This guy
just might be one of those rare guys. It's just

(01:05:01):
unflappable by you know, game plans, the magnitude of the game.
He just there's a chance, he's just an all time
great player. It's kind of you know, he's having one
of the all time great seasons. Right fifty touchdowns as
a twenty three year old there in the a f
C Championship sixty minutes away from the NFC. I mean,
it's gonna go down. This isn't just even if it
is his greatest season ever, It's it's gonna go down

(01:05:22):
as one of the great quarterback seasons we've ever seen
if he wins this game. Doug gotlib show here on
Fox Sports Trading. That's the voice of John MIDDLECOF three
Now is his podcast download. It's on The Herd podcast
that we're Let's get to the other game. I remember
watching that Rams Saints game thinking the Rams could be
what you know, they took some chances they wouldn't normally take.
I think there's a fake punt in the game. Um,

(01:05:44):
and I was. I think the Rams are playing better
now and I don't think the Scenes are playing as well.
Am I crazy? Now? Breeze was not good last week.
I got a text from Buddy in the league, like God,
he looks off. He just wasn't comfortable. I mean, they
were pressuring him. Phillies defensive line is good. But if
if he plays like a mortal, then the team is
pretty normal. But what's the likelihood of Drew Brees having

(01:06:06):
back to back stinkers. I mean, it's just probably not
gonna happen. Uh. To me, that was a big reason
why Philly. I mean they could have won that game.
But was really in that game all game because he
wasn't right. Uh he was, I thought for his standards.
I mean, it was a terrible game, skipping balls that
he made some plays when he had to. But it's

(01:06:27):
hard for me to envision Drew Brees. You know the
amount of work he puts in every week. Now he
feels like he just didn't have a good game. I
know he made some plays to Michael Thomas, but the
total body of work in the game, I thought he
just was off and I just I can't see it
this week, especially with a team he's comfortable playing because
he's played him before and had success. I think he

(01:06:49):
bounces back and has a huge week. I don't know, man,
I don't. They just haven't been he hasn't been right
they You know, at the end of the day, he
is forty and sometimes we forget, and I mean we
all do because we just think these guys now can
play forever. You know, maybe it's just it's hard to
be a four year old quarterback and play an elite
level in the NFL in the playoffs. That that might

(01:07:09):
be the case. So maybe maybe he's just showing signs
of his age, which shouldn't be that crazy, even though
it kind of feels like it is. Yeah, it's gonna fascinating. Um,
you're a former scout in the Nation Football League, give
me your thoughts on Kyler Murray. Somebody who put his
name into the NFL draft doesn't mean that he has
to make this decision as of yet. What's your EVL

(01:07:29):
so far on Kyler Murray. I mean, I love watching
him like anyone that's watched him play, But I think
we've jumped the shark a little bit on just thinking
that it's gonna be a super easy transition for a
guy that's five nine in socks to play quarterback at
the NFL level. I know, you can make the argument
he had a big offensive line in Oklahoma. He's a
good thrower of the football, Like I wasn't a big

(01:07:49):
Lamar Jackson fans, but that was because he didn't throw
the ball very accurately. Kyler is an accurate and natural
thrower of the ball. I just think the height anyone
that's bended just an NFL practice and seeing like in
a training camp practice when there's ninety guys and twenty
of them aren't gonna sniff the NFL. They're just massive,
you know. And it's five nine guys stand out because

(01:08:10):
they are way smaller than everyone else. So I think
it's just gonna be different. He's also a little five
dying right like, and I don't know, Yeah, he's just
a he's just a little dude. Uh. That's that's a
that's a really really hard, really really hard one to
explain to somebody who hasn't seen him in person. Stuff. Yeah,

(01:08:31):
I was talking to someone about Russell Wilson and when
Russell was coming out, he was like two two hundred
fifteen pounds. He was built and he's a little taller,
but he's much thicker. So that's you're right, I mean
the size, the the weight element of it. If he
weighs in at one seventy two, like, that's not a
good thing, you know, No, not not not so much
great stuff John three Out is the podcast downloaded fall

(01:08:52):
on Facebook and on Twitter. Enjoyed Championships Sunday. We'll talk
to you real soon, Thanks Doug. And enjoyed watching the
Arizona State game last night. I did that it was
and did you watch at the end because the end
got crazy? They were down to watch and all of
a sudden they had a chance. When I when I
was scouting, I went through Montana and I watched the
half of football game next to Tinkle. He's he's the man.

(01:09:13):
So I've been following his career ever since Montana and
his kid was bawling. Kids good he's now. He's a
very very very good player in a great family. Thanks
so much for watching, and thanks for joining us on
the show. Thanks Bro, have a good one. Let's get
to Dan Buyer, who he didn't know chance. He stayed
up and watched that game last night because he's got
a thirty minute limit unless Netflix, and then because there's
a break in between shows and Netflix, and no, I

(01:09:36):
feel bad. It was it was thunder Lakers that was
on the TV, and then of course inside the NBA,
and then when that wraps up, moved on. So I apologize.
I just wanted to watch Russell Westbrook miss shot after
shot after shot last night as seven for thirty isn't
bad free throws down There's this adorable video of him

(01:09:58):
with his little son out in the court before the game.
I mean, how could you not you did not love that?
But what is going on with Russell? Usually guys shoot
better as they get older. Yeah, it just wasn't happening.
Good one for the Lakers last night. Who actually got
some good news today. Rajon Rondo has been cleared to practice.
Remember had that surgery on his finger last month. Also

(01:10:19):
heard on Christmas Day. He's expected him as four to
five weeks with the injury, so this puts him maybe
on schedule. Doug to return in that four to five
week window, but has been cleared to practice. Bulls rookie
Wendell Carter Jr. Out of Duke gonna miss eight to
twelve weeks following surgery on his left thumb. The Marcus
Cousins making his season debut tonight for the Golden State

(01:10:40):
Warriors as they take on the Clippers. He's gonna be
in the starting lineup his first game since he ruptured
his achilles last season. The injury reports are in for
the a f C Championship Game. No one on the
list for the Patriots, only Dorian O'Daniel on the injury
report for the Chiefs is the linebacker won't play in
the a f C Title Game. That safety Eric Berry will.

(01:11:01):
He's got a heal injury, but was not listed on
the injury report. The Saints, though, could be missing a
big part of their offense against the Rams. Titan Ben
Watson not likely to play in that game. ESPN says
he's gonna miss it because of an appendicitis. Cowboys moved
on from offensive coordinator Scott Linahan. Cowboys head coach Jason
Garrett called in the mutual decision, asked Lenahan in his

(01:11:23):
own statement and at the Desert Classic round to philm.
Michelson has the lead at fifteen under power as he's
putting the finishing touches on his second round. We'll be
back to the Doug Gottlieb Show in ted seconds. But first,
a word from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a
living room to a dog taking a joy ride, we've
covered it. Talk to farmers, we know a thing or two.
Because we've seen a thing or two. We are Farmers

(01:11:48):
underwritten my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products
not available in every state. Doug Old, Fox Sports Radio.
I've offered this up as hypothesis, will see if it
plays out. There is a good part to four year
old quarterback. There's a lot of good two four year
old quarterbacks performing well and playing in Championship Sunday. The

(01:12:10):
bad part is there's a chance that both play really
poorly and look like they're forty plus years old this weekend.
But but the good news is that it will replenish
good quarterbacks for all the teams. Now, common sense tells
us everyone will not have a top caliber quarterback, right,

(01:12:30):
That's that's common sense. And you look, and we don't
know what the Dolphins are gonna do at quarterback. The
Jaguar seemed to be in need of a quarterback, like
we look around the league. Tampa thinks that they can
fix Jamie's but they're still not totally sure. But Buffalo,
the Jets, the Patriots, the Bills, and the Jets have
young guys that they think are their guy, and the

(01:12:51):
Patriots still have old, reliable The Ravens are trying to
go a different route. Here with Lamar who they get
to back them up, It's gonna be interesting. The Browns
clearly had their quarterback of the future. The Steelers still
have Big Ben, who's apparently willing to stay on for
a couple more years than than previously expected. The Texans,
the Colts, the Titans, they all have their young quarterback
of the future. Anyway, you kind of go through it,

(01:13:12):
and more teams that not have their quarterback. So I
think when you look at how rookie quarterbacks have performed,
um and all, you know, Rosen probably the exception, all
performed at least at the level of expectations of those
first round picks. Now whether or not they have you know,
I don't think the Lamar Jackson thing works long term,

(01:13:33):
but short term it's been really really effective. Um I
I believe Donald has greater upside than Baker, but Baker
had some bigger games this year. And Rosen will see
now that he has an offensive minded head coach is
a former quarterback in his own right. But you got
these experienced quarterbacks, not just that the two old dudes
playing this weekend, but you know Andrew Lux and his

(01:13:55):
thirties Russell Wilson, Cam Newton, will see what happens with
his health, Aaron Rodgers, Matt Ryan in. You got the
young quarterbacks who you know, Dak Prescott not great, Jared
Goff probably not great, but good solid, Deshaun Watson, who
some of us thought could be great, maybe will be
lower those expectations. Pat Mahomes, who is great. Then you

(01:14:17):
got like six teams Dolphins, Broncos, Jags, Redskins because of injury,
like they had solid until injury, Bengals and and Giants.
Those are the only ones that need quarterbacks. And they're
still Flacco, They're still falls. There's still some viable guys
that will be out there. And I think that because

(01:14:41):
guys can play, Philip Rivers can play longer then quarterbacks
have ever been able to play before. Because the rules,
we may actually finally have a league where only a
team or two are looking for a quarterback year instead
of half the league looking for a quarterback. They're being
allowed to throw earlier, some are being allowed to read

(01:15:01):
defenses earlier, and now once they get to the play
in the National Football League, they're allowed to play in
that league earlier. All of this and played longer because
of the rules which keep them away from some of
the violent contact which ended Guy's career previously. I think
all this helps the future of the position anyway. Coming

(01:15:25):
up next is the chiefs defense better than we give
them credit. Find out on the Doug got Leap Show.

Chiefs defense, people think that that defense isn't that good

(01:16:30):
because of the ratings. You know, they were ranked this
this then in the lower part of the league's But
they came out with, you know, different things that we
haven't seen. You know, they came with man to man,
They came with a lot of pressure. They forced us
to use half of the field at times, and um,
it got tricky for us a little bit in you know,
at times they got the best of us. Yeah. Look,

(01:16:52):
I think the defensive line is way you know, defense
line is really really good. Um, they're gonna get Eric
Berry back, it appears. I think that will improve them.
They're playing at home, that will improve them. And here's
another part. They also they play man a man. And
if you go back to last weekend, what did everyone
say about Tom Brady can't play him own, Gotta play

(01:17:13):
a man a man, You've gotta you've gotta challenge his
wide receivers to get open and challenged Tom Brady to
make some difficult throws down the field. So some of
it is the fact they're a little bit better than
you think. Some of it is that the ratings are
more about gross yardage and and things that don't actually matter.
And it even points allowed they have, they're they're on
the field more because their offense scores more points. Right.

(01:17:36):
But but some of it is also that they didn't
play well and they had some injuries, and some of
it is, at least for this weekend, a good matchup
for against the Patriots. So I don't think any of
that's crazy to say that the Chiefs defense is better
than their ratings. I think the other thing is the
Patriots defense is better than the perception. But the Patriots

(01:17:57):
defense is one that's really really good against the run
and just solid and containing against the past generally, although
they played differently last week against the Chargers. Say, here's
Chris Carter and Nick right on first things. First, discussing
Drew Brees going to this Sunday's game against the Rams.
As Drew Brees told me, I'm in as good as

(01:18:17):
physical shape as any quarterback that's ever played this game,
or any quarterback playing now, I just don't talk about it.
So he threw a little shade out there to Tom Brady.
Drew Brees he's got the same type of staff and
he takes care of his body. But Charles Brees is legacy.
It can grow because when you have won two Super Bowls.

(01:18:39):
The reason why we didn't want to Eli bench last
year may want to super Bowl Nobody. Nobody was saying
Flacco shouldn't be benched because he got one. Absolutely and
and Breeze when you when you were going to finish
first or second in every major regular season passing category.
If he gets the second championship, then you start talking
about Wait, like, is Freeze Peyton manning a conversation like

(01:19:02):
Breeze Farb does he move ahead of him like he if?
I know I care about rankings much more than you do,
but like if guys care about that stuff. The only
thing missing from his resume other than a League MVP,
which he almost won this year, would be the second
one thing I think is that little edge. They were
one play, one miracle and many happens from being the
same position year. I agree, I think that that is

(01:19:25):
it is something that has missed. Uh. Now, of course
they would have had to go on the road to
Philadelphia and maybe they maybe they come up short then,
But the point is a good one in that this
is a pretty good football team going back to last
year that was building towards this year. Um, I don't
love the comparable comparison with Eli Manning. Like Eli Manning,

(01:19:49):
there's some parallels in that that's really the only case
you can make Freeli Manning, like Eli Manning, has no
other playoff wins except for those two Super Bowl years,
which is crazy. And so if we're gonna compare bruised
Breeze to Eli Manning, like all right, Um, Breeze has
been helped out by playing indoors. Breeze has been helped

(01:20:10):
out by playing for Sean Payton. And Breeze has gotten
a pass because of um because of bounty Gate for
three atrocious seasons in a row in which his defense
was awful, but he put up monster numbers during them.
No one says noticed. No one has said, like, hey,
when he has put up those numbers, they haven't been good.

(01:20:34):
Have you ever heard anybody say that? Because last year
he didn't put up monster numbers. This year he didn't
put up like ridiculous numbers. I think Breeze is fantastic,
fantastic Do I think he's one of the top five
all time quarterbacks. Like, no, I'm not gonna rethink that
just because his teams have been much better. His teams

(01:20:55):
have been much better. But but this season he threw
for three was in nine nine two yards? Right. The
point is that he's been good and they've been good.
Have they been good solely because of him? Not? Really?
Not really. Has he been a part of why they've

(01:21:16):
been good, Yes, But when he's been stellar, when he's
been incredible, Like, look, people forget when he last three
years ago he threw for five thousand yards. It was
a bad team. It's a bad team that started out
losing their first three games, and in those first three
games he threw for over four hundred and over three
hundred yards, uh, racking up eight touchdowns in the first

(01:21:39):
three games. It was a team that lost nine games,
excuse me, eight games. They go eight and eight and
got got into the playoffs and he was atrocious. Uh No,
that yeah, he was. You know, he didn't make the playoffs.
That excuse me there eight and eight. The point is
that when he's when he's put up those big numbers,
they haven't been good recently. So I think he's really good.

(01:22:01):
I think he's a first ballot Hall of Famer. But
I think the the idea of him saying like, look,
I'm in better shape than look do you do? You
play inside, you play indoors, and you've been able to
have the benefit of not only playing indoors, but playing
with a great offensive coordinated with great offensive weapons most
of your career. I do think two Super Bowls changes

(01:22:24):
how most people look at him. I don't think it
changes our most analysts look at him. They look at
him as a notch below those old time greats, a
notch below Payton, notch below Brady Frankly, notch below Aaron
Rodgers and Brett Farve and some of the others. It
is weird on how on how like we we change
how we look at Brett Farve Now, like Farve is legendary,

(01:22:47):
top should be top ten, neverthless, three time m v P.
And like Breeze, he took over a terrible franchise, but somehow,
because of how it ended, maybe we look differently upon it.

In about Tom Brady. Definitely the greatest, the greatest player
of all time, not just quarterback in my opinion, because
he's such a leader in the locker room, and for
someone double the age of some of the players to

(01:24:15):
be able to lead like that and connect like that
and at the same time so pleasant to be around.
It's I'm really the luckist guy in the world, Doug
Otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um. Yeah, I mean, like, look,
I get it. If you're all in on Tom, you're

(01:24:37):
all in on Tom. Let's not act like we're going
to take away from Tom. Nothing should take away from
Tom Brady. But but I think that what Belichick has
done surpasses even the greatness of Tom Brady. It's handling

(01:24:57):
the egos of the quarterback, of the owner, of the players,
being able to be flexible when you lose staff members,
which he has. Remember part of part of what happened
to the Patriots when they went through a decade of
not winning a championship, which historically will be seen as well,

(01:25:18):
man a decade, but that win a championship. In that decade,
they did go sixteen and oh had an undefeated regular season,
something we hadn't seen since the seventy two Dolphins. And
they lost in the Super Bowl. So it's like, did
they go a decade, Yeah, but they actually probably had
their best team during that decade. They've parted ways with

(01:25:38):
plenty of players and and it it shouldn't diminish Tom Brady.
But Tom Brady's first Super Bowl was not because of
Tom Brady. We we remember things differently now than we
did back then. Right back then, the Patriots were about
the team and the defense. If you remember back then,

(01:26:00):
everyone used to be introduced, they have an offense or
the defense introduced at the Super Bowl and the Patriots
the first team Rams offense was introduced and quarterback for
the Rams Kurt Warnerer Warner, Kurt Warner comes running out
right at running back for the Rams, Marshal Falk and
it's just star after star after star after star, Isaac

(01:26:23):
Bruce and Tory Holt, you name it. And then it
was and now the New England Patriots. And then they
come running out in the field. They went from a
team built as a team with a great defense and
with just enough skilled players. Then they added Corey. Remember
they had Corey Dillon, who they would they would make

(01:26:44):
a They would always make an acquisition of a guy
that somebody else didn't want, or somebody else who who
had had junior say out late in his career. They
had Corey Dillon when he couldn't get along in Cincinnati.
They had Randy Moss who had worn out his welcome
and didn't want to be in Oakland before can you
say there have been better offensive coaches. Sure have there

(01:27:06):
been better defenses, Sure have there been better quarterbacks. I
would actually make the case sure there have been teams
that are built more for certain seasons. But finding a
way to be flexible enough to change styles but rigid
enough to establish a culture and a way of doing
things is incredibly difficult. So, yeah, Brady is awesome, and

(01:27:29):
Brady has great leadership, But part of it is part
of leadership. This is the everyone has a boss. Is
how Brady's boss allowed him to be a leader. That
actually is on Belichick. You gotta read your team, you
gotta read your players, and you've gotta understand which guys
can handle what you want to give them you can't get.

(01:27:51):
You can't make a leader out of a guy who
just isn't one. And when you find one that is,
you gotta stick by him. And you've got to find
a way as his ego grows. And look, we can
say what we want about Tom Brady and how he
handles himself and how he leads and how he works.
Let's be honest. Now he's married to a to the
most financially successful supermodel of all time. He's the most

(01:28:12):
successful quarterback in football history. Um, if you think he
doesn't have an ego, like there's just no way of
achieving the level of greatness or a reality that would
have to be suspended in order to believe that. And
Belichick has found a way to nicely coexist with that ego.

(01:28:37):
There's a healthy ego and there's an unhealthy ego, and
Brady probably has mostly a healthy ego, but it's still
an ego. And when Robert Craft, your owner, says your
quarterback is the greatest football player of all time, like, man,
this is gonna be really tough, but he's found a
way to coexist, to lead and at sometimes just let

(01:28:57):
him be. I'll weeked Tom in the preseason, I'll tweet
Tom in the regular season, but in the postseason, I'm
gonna mostly let Tom and Josh McDaniels just be. Let
them do them. And oh yeah, by the way, read
your team, read your quarterback and understand what they need.
They went out and drafted Sony Michelle in the first round.

(01:29:18):
You don't need a running back in the first round.
This team did, and they did just because he understood
how they would have to play to win once they
got in January. And how did it work last week?
How did it work last week? I told you yesterday.
The fact that Dick Vermeil and Eric Dickerson and others
call them cheaters, it only if they didn't cheat. It

(01:29:41):
only means that they're greater than anyone could have ever thought.
That's actually a compliment if you didn't cheat, If you
didn't cheat, and somebody calls you a cheater, that says
you're so awesome, you must be doing something that's not
legal for other people to do. And I think that's
closer to the truth than the idea that they've actually cheated. UM.

(01:30:04):
I would say Bill Walsh had a greater impact in
terms of the coaching style and the West Coast offense
and the number of coaches that went on too greatness,
and and Bill Parcels probably did as well. But you know,
Belichick has this kind of coach k way of finding

(01:30:26):
a way to always be there in the mix and
for and to have Brady, and to lose and to
get rid of so many other talented pieces at times
and still be able to achieve. We always point out
on now the Bills and the Jets and the Dolphins
haven't figured out. You don't think they're trying, do you? You
You don't think they're not I mean, you don't think

(01:30:47):
they're not trying, do you? Of course they're trying. They
just can't seem to achieve it. They just can't seem
to figure it out. They can't seem to crack the
code the league is designed. Does mind to bring you
back to earth? After a great year? And they've had
double digit wins all except for one year in which

(01:31:08):
Tom Brady has been their quarterback with Bill Belichick as
their coach. That's not greatness. I don't know what is stuck.
Gotlum show here on Fox Sports Radio. So that's Robert Craft.
I love the did you guys hear some of the
other comments from from Belichick? Right last two days, he's
given some some just great ones. You know, he was
asked about the weather and he's like, you know, tell

(01:31:33):
us where this game will be there, we don't care.
And then they asked him today, Tom Curran from the
Boss I think from the Boston Globe. Tom Curran asked him,
Tom Coase U is NBC Sports Boston. Tom Curran asked
him earlier today. You know, if he gets up for
for big games, he's like, you tell me a game
that doesn't matter. They all matter, They all absolutely matter,

(01:31:59):
and when they all matter on her, it allows you
to not get nervous or that. That's kind of his
you know, Mike Sazevsky style is he next play. Let's
have a next play mentality. Bill Belichick style is Look,
if every game, in every play, and every practice matters,
then you won't be nervous about the bigger players with

(01:32:20):
the bigger games, because you've already treated other games just
like these games. Do your job, do your job in
the practice, do your job of the games, your job
in the games that people call bigger games, and they
will feel exactly the same. All right. Up coming next,

Championships Sunday. I give my money right. Are you tired
of losing money every week? Yeah, do you want to
be in the notes? Well, we might not know, but

(01:34:10):
Vegas always knows. All right, r J. Let's let's start
in Nola, where the Saints are three and a half
point favorites. Are you a buyer that Drew Brees is fine,
he just hasn't been playing well, I'm skeptical, and I

(01:34:31):
mean to be honest, I'm not sure. So the question is,
what's the likelihood that he's limited. We had great co
San straight out of Vegas yesterday and I said, at
the film level, how does Breeze his arm strength look?
And he said, it feels compromised. It it seems less
than it was earlier. Now, on the other hand, if

(01:34:54):
you take the home road split of the Saints offense
and then you take a way the non Breeze game
right week seventeen, they've had thirty points or more every
game since Week two against the Browns and then except
for against the Eagles. So really, entering last week we

(01:35:15):
would have said, boy, problems on the offense. Breezes arms
trouble some. But it's like, well, wait a minute, They've
had thirty points or more every game since September at home.
Now we've got one more data point that points against offense.
It's against breeze. Now, the question is what's bigger that
long streak of home performances being you know, really good

(01:35:39):
thirty plus points or what we saw last week. Considering
the Eagles are mighty good defense. You know, I'm skeptical,
but I'm probably more pro Breeze at this point and
the Saints offense being uh not to cause a major concern.
All right, let's go to the Rams and the Rams offense.
Rams offense blind uh struggled, although Throwitt with joined us

(01:36:00):
and he got a little defense and he's like, look,
everybody has lulls. We've been really good all year. They
were really good last week running the football. How do
they match up when you run the numbers against the
Saints defense. I think this is the problem is golf.
If in this game, the biggest question I've got, the
biggest bet I'd like to make is against golf, because

(01:36:22):
what we know statistically, and it's one season. That's the paradox.
In the NFL, it's only sixteen games, and if you
go to home road splits, you're looking at eight games
even at the end of the regular season. Forget during
the season, but eight games at home, a hundred and
sixteen passer rating for golf that's excellent on the road,

(01:36:43):
though two is his passer rating that's below average golf
on the road. Is a below average NFL quarterback this season.
Now you add in he's looked worse than the second
half of the year, specifically three games against playoff teams,
zero touchdowns for golf, five interceptions, zero and five. Cooper

(01:37:06):
cut being gone for a while now makes it even worse.
So this feels like a perfect storm, Doug, and I'd
like to hear what you think if you are a
skeptic of golf. He's on the road, and he's he's
not playing seemingly as well as he did earlier in
the year. Cop is gone, and he plays worse against
elite playoff competition. That's the perfect storm, it seems. This

(01:37:29):
Sunday it is um You know. I do think one
point that in terms of who's playing this weekend is
you know, the Saints lose arguably their best interior pass rusher.
I think that that's good news. I also think that
you look at the two running back threat, that's that's
good news. And I also feel like, look this is

(01:37:51):
the Saints team that's been trying to plug holes in
that one side of their defensive secondary all year long,
and you feel like it's one where Sean McVeigh is
waiting to kind of expose it. We saw this game
and it wasn't. Rams took some chances they wouldn't normally
take in that game, and I feel like they were
holding some things back for this game. Maybe I'm crazy,
Maybe I'm overselling the McVeigh element to it, the prep

(01:38:14):
element to it, or playing in the playoffs, but I
thought the exhale was last week. And I do think
the Rams probably have better players outside of the quarterback position.
And I have questions about golf just like you do,
but I think if you give him time, he can
make throws. Whereas I'm not sure it's about time with
Breeze more father time with Breeze. Yeah, I agree, I mean,
except father time with Breeze. Except this is you know,

(01:38:38):
we're not betting him next year right where he's He's
gonna be two days older when this game is played.
So what we saw last week, let's assume that's what
he is right now. I mean, he's still one of
the top eight or nine quarterbacks in the NFL. Right, yeah, yeah,
I guess, I mean yeah, I mean part of it
is I saw him against uh, I've seen him against

(01:39:01):
the Cowboys, seeing their struggles late, like look, we can
point out on the road, but the Cowboys were not
open air on the road and they really struggled. Now,
I think the Cowboys defense is different than the Rams,
but it still is cost for concern in terms of
what what Drew Brees is right now as opposed to
what we envisioned him being. And C J. Anderson, this
is a correct me If I'm wrong, and I'm being
ironic here, I know I'm not. He was on the count.

(01:39:23):
He wasn't a professional football player six weeks ago. No crazy, right,
So no, maybe it's not crazy. Maybe it's a sign
that by accounts, and I'm I'm not sure if you
discussed this, but I think the ringer had at first
is that the Rams caught something on the Dallas hand
placement or something with stunts and they felt like they
And to me, when you've got a guy like C. J.

(01:39:45):
Anderson that seems to be an elite NFL running back
when he was on the couch six weeks ago, is
probably not about him, right, So now you're going against
the Saints unless somehow they give something important A ay,
you gotta wonder. I mean C J. Anderson was there
for anyone to side the Steelers, who obviously were had

(01:40:07):
problems with running back you know one you know, uh
death for sure. I mean every team, let me think
about it. If a player is on the couch, it
means thirty two teams said no. I just can't think
we were that wrong or the league was that wrong
about him. Doug gotlive show here on Fox Sport Trait.
Let's go to the other one. The Patriots are underdogs

(01:40:28):
on the road, and for good reason. Kanc Chiefs are
really good, played arguably their best defensive game against a
good team last week. Who do you like it? One?
My pick of the week, And listen, it's always time
for the cautionary Uh, don't bet both games unless you're
only doing it for fun, because it's hard for both
these games to have an incorrect line, and that's really

(01:40:50):
what it needs to be to be profitable long term.
But hey, we all know we're playing a lot of
people play for pizza money for fun, and amongst the two,
I like Into City the best and I hate, hate,
hate betting against Balochick. I hate it. But this road
reality for New England. I mean literally three and five

(01:41:13):
straight up, zero wins on the road for the Pats
against playoff teams. And think about it, Doug, and I
know you're the next level guy. The Pats could easily
been oh and eight against the spread on the road.
So all the games they lost they lost against the spread.
The three games they won, one was Monday night against
the Bills. You might remember a pick six and the

(01:41:35):
fourth quarter to cover that game. Then they were against
the Jets laying double digits. Jets were on the two
yard line, third and two with a minute left, so
they had two cracks from the two to cover that game,
so easily could have went the other way. And then
the other game was the Bears, and most people watched
that game said the Bears probably outplayed them, but there

(01:41:55):
was a punt return and some another turnover. I'm not
saying don't give the Patriots those games. They covered them,
but they were literally three plays away from being oh
and eight on the road and by death against the spread,
and by definition, the spread is what's expected. So if
you almost fall short, eight out of eight times on

(01:42:18):
the road, and now in the playoffs, we know the
road means more. Even Tom Brady in playoff road games,
not neutral, not the super Bowl, but playoff road games,
eight touchdowns in his career, eight interceptions. That's below average
even for Brady. It's tough to win on the road.

(01:42:39):
By the way, ten straight Conference finals games have been
have been won by the home team. Yeah, last five years.
In fact, the amazing statu is the last five Super
Bowls and the Ravens were the year before when they
had a nice run on the road. Five years after

(01:42:59):
that now zero road wins for any Super Bowl participant,
so literally not one had a single road win. It's
been home home for every team. That's crazy, crazy stuff.
I mean the Rams. The Rams lost legit games and
and lost this game which ultimately put them on the road.
The crazy thing about about the Chiefs is if the

(01:43:21):
Chargers just didn't dump a game to the Broncos that
you know, they would have played at home and it
would have been completely different. Playoffs would have seen the
Chiefs on the road last week. Uh in New England.
I'm with you on on the Chiefs. I do think
they win this I can't tell on the Rams and
the Saints, although all the numbers, as you're pointing out,
seeing a point to the Saints, correct, I think so.

(01:43:43):
And I also think with the Saints is it's almost
like the whole fantasy team element. Whereas to leave, oh,
it's almost like the Magnificent seven or whatever. We're getting
this great cornerback from Kansas City and then from Denver,
you know, Peters and to lead. I'm just not sure.
To leave after the injury is the to leave we
saw before the injury, right, And I'm not sure how

(01:44:06):
good Sue is right now. Right. So, remember a couple
of weeks before the season. So let's say the second
week of the preseason, the Rams were thirteen to one
to win the Super Bowl. That means they were like
the six or seventh favor They looked really good early
and everyone started saying, wow, look, this is like an
all star team on defense and golf is just better

(01:44:27):
than ever. And they got to be plus two fifty
to win the Super Bowl like week four. Now, think
about that. That was the biggest favorite doug early in
any season in the last decade. None of the Patriots
teams had ever been that big of a favorite in
the last decade. Why because it felt like an all
star team, a great offense and a great defense. Now
the defense for the Rams, I think a big question mark,

(01:44:49):
and I think the passing game is a big question mark.
The only thing we could be sure of is the
Rams can run the ball. That doesn't feel like an
elite NFL team. To me, I'm a skeptic. I also
I'm skeptical. I'm I'm skeptical. I wouldn't consider myself a skeptic.
I also think they have they have anaroned Donald that
defensive line. They do have some defensive playmakers. We'll see
if they can get to they can get to Drew Brees,

(01:45:12):
if they can make them play left hand and make
them throw the ball more than than they want to.
Great stuff, r J. Check out our j Top of
the Hour He and Jonas knocks straight out of Vegas
is the show? Are J Bell? Thanks so much? Hey, Doug,
you should know down the Super Bowl, I'm gonna be
hanging around your SAT just trying to learn something before
we go on. There you go, we will be handing
out lessons on how not sports. Right, Let's let's get

(01:45:32):
to um uh let's let's get to Dan buy or
find out what else going on sports? Stevie, what do
you got but dog, we've got a showdown tonight in
l A Clippers taking on the Warriors. Sorry, you got
quick to a mic adjustment, one of those things. There
we go. Can you hear this thing yourself? Can you
hear it? Yeah? You sound like a balloon or your chair.

(01:45:57):
It's it's it's uh, it's our it's our my stand
that you know, you could get it right in the
exact position, but then when you move it, it just
all goes for not. DeMarcus Cousins is making his season
debut tonight for the Golden State Warriors. Of course, it's
his first game since rupturing is achilles last season. He's
expected to start tonight's contest, but said, yeah, you're not

(01:46:19):
gonna see thirty minutes out of him. Bulls rookie Wendow
Carter Ju're gonna miss eight to twelve weeks following surgery
on his left thumb. Athletic with the first report that
Lakers point guard Rajon Rondo has been glued to practice
following surgery on his finger. Some injury news in the
NFL Chief safety Eric Berry getting good news, not even
on the injury reports. He'll play in Sunday's ANFC Championship

(01:46:39):
game despite a heel injury, while st set and Ben
Watson out after an appendestitis has kept him out of
practice all week. He is not gonna play against the
Rams on Sunday, according to ESPN, and the Cowboys moved
down from offensive coordinator Scott Linahan after five seasons. Second
round of the Desert Classic. PHILM. Michelson has the lead
at sixteen under par. Doug. We'll get actively Doug Gottlieb

(01:47:01):
show in ten seconds. But first the word from farmers.
From a dog accidentally flooding a living room to a
dog taking a joy ride, we've covered it. Talk to farmers.
We know a thing or two because we've seen a
thing or two. We are farmers under written my farmers
truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every state.
Doug gotlive show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right,

(01:47:23):
let me give you my two picks quickly. Um, I'm
I'm taking the Chiefs as well. I know that seed.
Don't bet against us. We're underdogs. There's a reason you're underdogs,
like for for Vegas to look at that line and
go like, yeah, we're gonna put the Patriots is more
than a field goal underdog. Um. And I know that
Belichick has owned this rivalry. I get it, but I

(01:47:47):
just think they have more dudes on one side just
and the defensive line is really really good. Now, maybe
they can't get to Brady, but um, if it becomes
a shootout, I absolutely give give it to the Kansas
City Chiefs. They've played better teams. Now, they may not
have closed the deal and beating those better teams, but

(01:48:08):
they've played more difficult schedule and I think that it's
a completely different game when you play away from New England. Now,
the Patriots had a masterful game plan last week, and
they had even better execution. Remember the Patriots did something
that no one else in the NFL does. They didn't defer,

(01:48:29):
and they got the ball and they marched it down
the field. That's kind of part of the whole Patriot things, like, wait,
did they just not defer? That throws everybody else off.
They just have this ability to to do sometimes the
most obvious opposite thing than anybody. Everybody else is spreading
you out. All right, We're gonna you know, we're gonna
do fullback wham and run the ball right out at you.

(01:48:49):
You're worried about whether or not Rob Gronkowski can run,
that's fine. We won't use him as a run and
we'll use him as a blocker. Well, everybody else differs
when they get the ball, because we're the best in
the league. They're the best in the league at at
at flipping it at the end of the half right
scoring and then getting the ball back and scoring again
too consecutive possessions and and putting you at an incredible disadvantage.

(01:49:11):
We're gonna get the ball in march down the field
and score and put you behind seven nothing, so that
sets up our defense and sets up the tone and tenor.
They're a magnificently coached team. But I'm into this Mahomes thing.
I just think the guy can make plays, and I
don't think this is the defense that pressures him into mistakes.
I'm gonna take the Chiefs. On the other side, I'm

(01:49:35):
not buying into the Saints. I think they're good, I
don't think they're great. I do think Ted getting helps
him because they've been looking for somebody to take the
top off of defense. Uh but but I think you know,
having a key to lead back will really help them defensively.
To leave is a big game player and allows Mark
takes Marcus Peters off of checking Michael Thomas, which wasn't

(01:49:56):
a good matchup and Drew By and and Sean Payton's
said as much. But between Brandon Cooks, a former Saint
who they got rid of, and Marcus Peters, who they
talked trash about, there's something too. It's there's something to
the motivation factor. There's something to the swag that the
Rams come in with. I think the Rams and the

(01:50:17):
Chiefs have been arguably the best team in football. And
maybe this is me hoping for rematch of the Game
of the Year, but I think those are your two
Super Bowl teams. Music, Who do you like this weekend?
I'm going road Dogs the whole way, Doug, So I
agree with you on the Rams. I think looking at
the last game that they played against the Saints in
the Super Dome, it was a really close game, back

(01:50:37):
and forth, really a field goal game. I know the
score was larger than that based off of the last
minute touchdown that Michael Thomas ended up scoring, but I
think they're too evenly matched teams. I like the way
the Rams are playing, especially what I saw from them
last week against the Cowboys. And I'm just rolling with
the Patriots. You know, last year when we made Super
Bowl picks, you went with the Eagles. I am still

(01:50:59):
living in dying by I rolled with the Patriots until
proven otherwise. I know everything says Chiefs have a great
home field advantage, they got more talented players, But I
just think it's one of those games where when it's
all said and done, we look at it and marvel
at the greatness of one Bill Belichick and Tom Brady.
I don't think there's anything wrong with that pick. I

(01:51:21):
don't think and and honestly, in terms of betting, to
make it a four point line to to take even
the Patriots and the number would probably be smarter. But
I'm gonna I'm gonna take the I'm gonna take the
Chiefs in this particular. Now. They couldn't really put their
foot on the throat of the Colts last week, which
obviously gives me pause. But I would also say that
the Patriots let their foot up after having such a

(01:51:43):
monstrous lead lead against the charge. It's gonna be fun, Aramos.
I know you're taking the Rams, would you like in
the other game. I will take the Patriots as well.
Patriots to win that game and the Rams and so
rematch of the Super Bowl Rams Patriots. Oh that's a
good one, right. I even think of that rematch of
the original Super Bowl, which was won by Tom Brady,

(01:52:04):
which kind of started this whole thing fire. Who you
got or do you want to wait till your Sunday Show?
I can. I can tell you this, thank you for
public the Sunday Show, by the way, which last week
I was on this kick and I'm still on the kick.
I want anybody in the Super Bowl besides New England.
I don't want to see the Patriots. I don't want
anything to do with New England. When we go to
a line up for Super Bowl fifty three, I was

(01:52:25):
saying that I think it's going to be the Patriots
and Rams, so I just it's it's my luck. I'd
actually love to see Chief Saints. That's actually the matchup
I'd like to see, but I just know it'll go
against me. Um by the way, that Rams Saints game.
Remember the Saints were up like twenty one points in
that game, so the Rams had to come all the

(01:52:47):
way back, and Doug, I think that the second matchup
is always different than the first. And so when you
had that Eagles blowout of that, the Saints had a
Philadelphia and the regular season, Yeah, I wasn't like that
last week, and so that's why I think it's for
this time around. So I like the Rams to win
and then the Patriots to win. So I'm going with
the read dogs, like at least John and I think

(01:53:08):
that's what Ryan said to all Right, we'll we get
to with two weeks prepared for the Super We're gonna
get we get where we run out of things to
talk about. I want to make sure this is really,
really clear. Okay. My dad used to tell me he
loved Colin. Colin has been exceptionally nice to me. We've
been friends for a long time since we both started
working together. The other place. My dad used always tell
me like he I don't I don't like that Sports

(01:53:30):
Nation show, Like I don't get the Sports Station show.
And I would say, you know what, that's good because
it's not for us, Like what are you talking about?
Like I'm a sports fan. It's on a sports network.
I don't get all those video clips. I just want
to hear Colin and and and he would say that girl,
Michelle Beatle and that girl, I want to hear them banter.
I think they're really good together. And I was like, well, look,
that's noted. I'll, i'll, I'll tell that to the folks upstairs.

(01:53:52):
But it's not for you. Okay. It was for a
much younger demo than my at the time, Uh, social
Security potentially collecting senior citizen father for two weeks. People
are gonna bitch and complain about Maroon five on sports radio. Okay,
let me just make this really clear. It's not for you.

(01:54:15):
You're going to watch the football game regardless because you're
a football fan, is because the Super Bowl. It's how
do you get all those other idiots who don't normally
watch football? And when I say idiots, I mean that
in the most loving terms. We're talking about grandmas and
moms and kids. How do we get the least offensive, coolest,
hippest way and oh yeah, by the way, look there's

(01:54:36):
other reasons. It's got to be cool with PEPSI, it's
gotta be cool with NBC and Adam Levine's on NBC
on the voice, and I'm sure he's a pepsi guy.
But here's the biggest thing. It's not for you, sports
radio idiot. It's not for you. It's for all those
other people that wouldn't be watching the super Bowl except
for when Adam Levine coming on. I really like him.

(01:55:00):
Cover it up. Next, we call it the press. Oh yeah,
oh h, we got the press. Dan Buyer will present
us with a lot of stories, like an interesting stat
to consider going in a championship Sunday, we'll share it
with you. Next. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three
pm Pacific. From a hot air balloon landing on a

(01:55:21):
car to a load of concrete falling on one, we've
covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers.
Under written my Farmer's truck, fire insurance exchanges and affiliates
products unavailable in every state. In sports, a trade can
make or break your team. It's no different when it
comes to selling or trading your car. You need to

(01:55:42):
make good choices in with true car. You've got a
star in your roster. So when you're ready to sell
or trade in your car, check out truecr True Cash Offer.
Not available in all areas. Doug Gotlieve show, Fox Sports Radio.
Remember Maroon five is not for you. It's not LANs
Marin size coming on. I I like the l A Raiders.

(01:56:06):
They're a nice team. Dad of Jim Plunkett is the quarterback.
He's and I liked him at Stanford. That's who it's for.
That's who it's for. That's why they were so you know.
And and then Janet Jackson and Nipplegate. That's why it
was such a big thing, because it's for the women
and the kids and the people that don't normally watch
the game. And now they're like, why is there a
nipple on my TV? Let's get to the press, the press,

(01:56:33):
Why is there a nipple on my television? Damn by
what he got, We got a bunch of stuff. First
of all, you know how the teachers are striking in
l A. Yes, the NFL Players Association delivered them pizzas today.
Who knows maybe a strike coming to the NFL in
a couple of years or a work stoppage very likely

(01:56:55):
by the way, it's going to happen. Whether it costs
games is another issue. No chance, no chance, no chance
that it costs games, or that it's yeah, no chance
to cost games. Sign of solidarity there is what the
NFL p A is calling it. All right, let's get
to some football action on the field. The first fifty
thousand fans to Arrowhead Stadium, Doug get a special a

(01:57:18):
f C championship towel that is actually shaped as a
T shirt. Now, I don't know why you wouldn't give
it to just every fan, you know, Like, why seventy thousand?
What's the what's the big whoop? But the phrase let's
roll is on the towel. The towel kind of resembles
the Chief's jersey that will be uh on display Sunday
in Kansas City. Tomahawk chop coolest chance in sports right

(01:57:42):
when it's all going at the same time, it's quite
quite a visual. Like Braves in the nineties, Knowles in
the nineties, chiefs Now like tomahawk chop is cool. Man.
There are many people who don't like get who many
people who feel that it's offensive. How is it offensive?

(01:58:07):
Just that's the way that they feel. They feel that
there's some mocking that the Native Americans. Oh it's a
war gets the old it's it's a it's a it's
like the gringo version of some sort of uh Native
American war chant. All right, it's cool man, It's like listen,
like we we want to be offended by so many
things that is not offensive. Now, the fact that they

(01:58:29):
used to scout people, that's a little bit offensive, but
we're not scalping anybody. It's a sporting event. It's kind
of cool if it's a tip of the captain Native
American culture. And now they were badasses even though they
didn't have firearms. I'm I'm all for it. A stat
today from nola dot com the Saints have trailed at
halftime and nine of their ten games that they've played
in the divisional round or later in their history of

(01:58:51):
the playoffs, so when the Saints have moved on, they've
been down. In fact, the Saints have trailed ba at
least seven points in all of their playoff games have
started from the divisional round and moved on to the
super Bowl. That's great stuff. I would not get behind.
That is a bad and remember that the you got Greg,
the Greg the leg playing right you got Greg the leg.

(01:59:13):
I think this RAMS team is really good again. I
think the Rams win. And if you get behind the
Rams with that running game with the two headed monster,
thank you, you welcome Ramos. Phil Mickelson leads the Desert
Classic at sixteen under par. But there's other golf news
to pass along. Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald made a
hole in one today at Seminal Golf Club in Florida,

(01:59:33):
one of the most exclusive clubs in the United States
maybe in the world. His group, well, Larry Fitzgerald played
host to former President Barack Obama. So Larry Fitzgerald with
a hole in one today, It's one thing to do it.
It's doing when when when Barack is there too, that's big.
That's stepping up. That's big. Two NBA notes to wrap

(01:59:53):
up the press. Number one, the Athletics says that Rockets
forward Carmelo Anthony will likely play again this season as
some teams have shown interest. Still a member of the Rockets,
so how he would get to those other teams has
to be decided. And DeMarcus Cousins makes his Warriors debut
tonight against the Clippers, and Gen Rondo has been cleared
to practice. Lakers gonna get Braun and Rondo back in
a couple of weeks. They'd be good, fourth best team

(02:00:16):
in the West. Backing out there and pressed. That was
the press. Um I saw this. Sandie Martinez says the
Yankees lack of interest in Minnie Machado because of their
interest in Nolan are Renando. Hey, dude, you can't have
Nolan Arnado. He's coming home in Orange County next year, Yankees.
Nol Arnoo is awesome, awesome, and frankly better guy than

(02:00:37):
Mannie Machado. Johnny Hustle, I'm sorry, hey, enjoyed championship weekend.
Trend Dilfer a join us to trend Dolfer take a
high school coaching job. I think he did. Trent Dilfer
is gonna join us, and Michael LOMBARDIOI join us. I'm
on the Chiefs, I'm on the Rams. I reserve the
right to be wrong. I'm Doug Godli
