you're listening to Fox Sports Radio? Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. We got a great
show for you today, an absolute great show for you.
Doug Gottlieb Show. Who here on Fox Sports Radio again?
A ton of thanks to our friends at Farmers Insurance

(00:43):
who had us out the Farmer's Insurance Open which is
taking place right now down in Loajoya. At Farmers, we've
seen almost everything, so we know how to cover almost anything.
When it's game time, you have an experienced player to
help you stay ahead of the game. Put their experience
in the play at Farmers dot com. Are Farmers um?
Do we get to buy or do we get the
final tally? Did we win that thing? Like I'm hearing

(01:05):
I'm I'm hearing reports we finished in second? Um? So
I don't know if it was there a trophy. Was
there just an atta? Boy? Was there a good job?
I can only tell you this, um. The level of
investment from ct PAN, who was our pro, was pretty awesome.
I was getting text yesterday afternoon driving home from San
Diego when ct pans like, what's the deal? I thought

(01:26):
we were gonna win this thing? And I was like
we we come on, ct We could have used your
score a couple of these holes, but he was super
invested in it. We finished second, correct, Doug, We have
an update. We actually are champions of the South Course
as we won the pro am in twenty nineteen. Yesterday
at the Farmers Insurance Open, we were second overall, but

(01:48):
Jason Day's group they played the North Course. Yes, so
we are champions of the Farmers Insurance pro Am at
the South Course yet Tory Pines and ct PAN is
taking that winning mojo as he is currently just two
shots back of John rom for the lead at Tory

(02:08):
Pines a round number one. You know what's amazing about it?
And I don't know if we should share these details.
He didn't play well yesterday. No, he did not have
a good day. He was not playing good golf yesterday.
He admitted it himself. He's I would do with him,
I said I. I asked him if he wanted some,
you know, some pointers, especially on three woods off the team.

(02:29):
He was like sure. So we stayed, We worked into
the into the into the twilight hours, and I would
I picked him. That happens though. Guys have bad bullpens
and all sudden they go out and throw a no hitter,
you know. So he had maybe a bad round with
us yesterday and now is turning turning it on at
Tory Pines. Okay, that's that's that's good stuff. Anyway, did
you get the Did you collect the trophy the hard way? No? No,

(02:50):
I found out late last night. So there is apparently
going to be stuff sent our way. I don't know
if we have trophies or not, but we do at
least receive something for our effort. We likes to win
the money. That's what we likes to do. We likes
to win the money. Thanks so much, Dan for for
carrying us yesterday. Edward will join us. He always has more.
He's gonna join us at twenty after the hour. Eric Manginie,

(03:10):
the Man Genius, a former head coach with the Browns.
I want to get to the Browns in a second,
and with the Jets and with the Patriots. Um uh,
assuming assistant with the Patriots, Eric Manji is gonna join
us later in the show, Kevin Clark from The Ringer
is gonna join us. We're gonna get you ready for
the Super Bowl. And react to the continued reactions from
the weekend. Uh, some of the things Belichick had to
say this video of Tom Brady, which I found to

(03:32):
be interesting. We also have NBA news where Victor Oladipo
out for the season and James Harden continues to put
up ridiculous numbers. Oh yeah, and in the National Football League,
maybe Antonio Brown will be a stealer next year. Will
be a stealer next year. But let's start with the
the article that I woke up to, and that's SETH Wickersham,

(03:52):
who's an outstanding writer for ESPN dot com, kind of
chronicled the mess that is, or it has been, the
Cleveland Browns, and really it centers around Jimmy Haslum, who's
their owner who and I guess I need a little
bit of review course on this. He was a minority
owner with Pittsburgh Steelers. He wanted to take some of
that Steeler mantra and mentality when he bought the Browns.

(04:16):
This is going back to two thousand twelve. So if
you look, you know, they've owned the team for uh
for essentially you know what, six years, and they've had
five different coaches, right, and it has been a mess.
And you'd like to think where you'd like to to

(04:36):
give a guy a pass and say, well, maybe it's
just bad luck. And then you'd also like to think, well,
maybe maybe it's bad it's bad luck coupled with bad timing,
which is also a little bit of luck. Um, And
and honestly, like how much is the owner to blame?
And Jerry Jones obviously can take a little bit more

(04:57):
blame than other owners because he's so hands on or
as Bob Kraft, for example, is mostly hands off obviously
with the exception of his boy Tom Brady. So different
owners own differently. But it's fascinating me. One of the
things that I've gotten accused of at times of my
career is, hey, dude, you're too negative. And that's because

(05:20):
now sports radio does have a sense of negativity to it,
but when you do it calling games, um, generally you
go back to the seventies, eighties, even nineties, and and
some today announcers tend to air on the side of
the positive, especially regional broadcast, like if you're the if

(05:41):
you're you know, the White Sox regional network, you're gonna
say nice things about the White Sox one because that's
your boss. You guys technically are collecting checks from the
same people. And that's just the way it's done. And
sports has always been kind of broadcast that way, where
we don't broadcast, we just don't just gloss over the
negative talking about the positive, whereas I don't know if
I've been negative as much. Is what I think is realistic.

(06:05):
But my my, my thought is always if you call
everything great, when you say something's great, that really is great,
it doesn't resonate. And I think ownership is the same way.
You can't say that all owners are great just because
they put up a bunch of money. If everybody was great,
then there would be no such thing actually as great.

(06:26):
But Jimmy Hasselm stepped into a business that he didn't
know anything about, that he wanted to know so much about,
and with every turn he seemed to make a calculated
mistake and and some of them are really some of
the decisions he made were actually really, really smart, right.
You went hired Joe Banner, who came out of Philadelphia,

(06:47):
and Philadelphia had had such a consistency of success, and
they hired Michael Lombardi, who we have on this show,
and he's been successful everywhere he's been. But what he
failed to realize is maybe it's not even on the
football acumen, but guys had to be able to work together,
and they could not coexist, could not coexist, and then

(07:08):
he ends up firing both of them and hiring, you know,
a general manager who was completely in over his head,
who absolutely butchered the draft, you know, when he had
an opportunity with two first round picks that was created
because of a Joe Banner trade with the Trent Richardson deal.
But the more I look at it, I want I

(07:29):
so I'm I'm an error. On the positive side, I'm
a hey, guys can in fact figure it out. And
the moves that were made were made with the best
intentions at heart. But but if you want to know
why the Browns were so bad, the dysfunction within that

(07:52):
organization is in the article. It's it's right there, and
I don't think it comes from a bad place. I
think it's a guy who was was crazy successful with
a family business, running these gas stations and expanding uh
their company tenfold, making himself into a billionaire, then taking

(08:13):
on a football team which he tries to kind of
run like a business. But this is like the conversation
about student athletes, and people say student athletes, well, it's
college football is just like a business, Like, no, it's not.
You don't pay taxes, right, Your workforce essentially gets insurance
and has a barter deal in a trade. Only they

(08:34):
don't pay taxes and you don't pay taxes on them.
You can't fire them. The only people who can't fire
the coaches. On the other hand, the coaches are really
the lynchpin and getting the players to begin with. It's
not like any other business on earth, So calling it
a business gives you the gives you the false sense
of security because people who run businesses think it should

(08:55):
be run the same, and it cannot. This is the
same is true with the NFL. Are there some aspects
of business which he failed to address the idea that
people atop your board or teach people atop of your
management circle have to be able to coexist and work together. Sure,
but they're just some parts to it that are not

(09:15):
like any other business on Earth. And and and trying
to be a fan for a long time and be
a minority owner for a long time, and then all
of a sudden decide, now, am I gonna take over
a team and hire football people, but I'm going to
become a football guy myself like that, Just that that
is a that is a recipe for disaster, And that

(09:39):
disaster came out of the oven the two previous years
to this one. When they want to combine one game
over two years, that's what it was. It was a
recipe for disaster. And if you don't believe me, the
recipe was properly put together, cooked up, and you got
one win over two years. And and even and then
hiring John Dorris, he who brings in his own guy

(10:01):
as offensive coordinator, who can't get along with the head
coach who is an offensive coordinator in his own right,
And then even in the wording of they walk in
on Hugh Jackson, who had lost eight games but had
lost four in overtime, telling him the team had quit
on him. Like even that is a disaster, and so
I read it and I want to believe, I desperately

(10:23):
want to believe that Baker Mayfield can overcome all these
odds with Freddie Kitchens and all the talent they've been
able to accrue, good and bad. But drafting you know,
top ten in the draft for what seemed like a
decade straight, I'm still left with Jimmy has I'm still
the owner. Baker Mayfield seems to have an inordinament inordinate
amount of power for a guy who wall a rookie

(10:47):
and through for you know, more touchdown passes than anybody else,
also through a ton of picks and really beat up
on the bottom of the league. But more than anything,
you know. I mean, look, he was average at best
against up defenses. Actually he was below average against good defenses.
So there's a little bit of a false sense of
security in that we absolutely positively have our guy. Like

(11:10):
I'm not convinced they are out of the woods or
even close to being out of the woods yet, nor
should I be, because the same guy owns them, and
the same and the same guy owning them trying to
figure out how he can get in, how he can
leave a mark. How he can be a part of
this thing? Boy, just it feels like a recipe for disaster.

(11:33):
And there is no fun in dysfunction when you're in it,
only when you're surrounded, only when you're you're covering it.
So I think it's it's and it's also one of
those deals where these are I think the term franchise
is perfect. It's perfect because it's much like and and look,

(11:56):
you know, different different companies that have France that franchised
themselves have different kind of standards. Have you got have
you guys seen have you guys seen? Um, what's the
one on McDonald's. It's with Michael Keaton, Ramos, have you
seen it? Uh? The Michael Keaton movie that's about the
Founder of McDonald's. It's I think it's called No, it's

(12:20):
I think it's called The Founder, isn't it? Yes? Yes, Yeah,
it's called Founder, right Ray. It's about Ray Kroc, who
basically you know Ray Croc. If you know anything about McDonald's, Like, wait, Dan,
buy are you seen this movie? I have seen The
Founder featuring Michael Keaton. Okay, so if you remember, like basically,

(12:41):
and I'm gonna say it was like in Fresno, was
was the first one, or maybe Baker's Field. I thought
it was. Yeah, And so they had the first ever McDonald's.
Two brothers they'd had and and they had all these
great ideas, and Ray Kroc came comes in and and says, hey,
I'm gonna I'm gonna start, you know, franchising this thing
because I think it's great. And then there was a

(13:02):
time where not all the franchisees were run at the
appropriate level, and so they kind of dialed some back
and redid some things. But even to this day, not
every franchise e of McDonald's or Burger King or you know,
dunkin Donuts or Chick fil A or whatever like. You know,
there's different levels of standards. You're not gonna and every

(13:22):
franchise isn't going to make the same amount of money,
isn't gonna have the same amount of success. Because even
if you have all these things you have to do
and all this money you have to send in and
different standards, they're still ownership matters. Who runs the thing matters,
the decisions they make matter. And if you don't believe me,
read this article about the Cleveland Browns and all the

(13:43):
missteps they made along the way, they earned one win
over two years. That was that was That was the cake,
and the recipe was cooked up over the years leading
up to it. Longtime NFL insider Edward Or into the show.
What's his reaction to the Brown story and how does that,

(14:04):
if at all, compare to the Cowboys, right, who have
an actual football guy as an owner, but they've had
their own levels of dysfunction along the way. Plus, is
the NFL actually going to change replay review? We'll discuss
that next. But first, you know, it's not smart. It's
not smart to go and play in a pro am

(14:26):
not having warmed up and hit balls at all in
a couple of months. That's not smart. You gotta It's
one thing to hit golf balls in the cold. It's
another thing to hit golf balls in the cold when
you're cold. Um, you know what is smart? Using zip

Sports Radio. You can find him on Twitter at Edward
or r f A, and of course you can follow
his Doomsday podcast. Or you can also just stay tuned
and listen to him when he joins us weekly or
he was um Westwood Westwood once sideline reporter for the

(16:51):
NFC Championship Game, He's Edward, or he joins us on
the Doug Gottlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Take me
back to that NFC Championship game. You were there, are
on the sideline watching it all unfold. Um, first thing
is everyone's talking about the call. It felt like the
Saints never recovered from that call. Is that fair? Yeah?

(17:11):
I think it's fair, and just you know, based on observation. Obviously,
there was a lot of immediate outrage on their sideline guys,
you know, slamming helmets and jumping up and down and
arguing the call, and and Sean Payton continued to debate
it with the officials really throughout the rest of the
regulation period of the game, and and it seemed maybe
even into some of the overtime period. So I am

(17:34):
not sure that they ever got over it. And ultimately
that probably cost him the game as much as the
non call itself, because they did have opportunities to win
even after that moment. You know, they did kick the
field goals, so they had to lead. They couldn't protect it,
so they got forced into overtime. And then even in overtime,
they had the first possession of the game, Drew Brees
giving it away with an interception as he was hit

(17:56):
by Dante Fowler. But Doug that was the first time
since twenty ten in a playoff game that the team
getting the ball first lost the game home to teams
getting the ball first in overtime, and the playoffs are
seven and one, the Saints being the only loser. Now, Uh,
fascinating stuff. Do you think the NFL changes once again
changes the overtime rules? You know, I don't know if

(18:18):
they're going to change the overtime period. Um. You know,
obviously it was it turned out to be a fair
situation in the NFC game, both teams you know, had
possession of the ball. Uh, not the case in Kansas City. Um,
but uh, you know, I still think Kansas City had
a chance to win the game. I mean, football, you
have to play defense too. And they had three opportunities

(18:39):
to stop Tom Brady on third and ten and failed
to do so. And and I think one overlooked aspect
of that game, Doug, was the chance the Chiefs had
at the end of regulations. You know, Andy Reid kicked
the field goal on second down from the twenty two
yard line, denying his young quarterback Patrick Mahomes, who thrown
fifty touchdown past year. You know, maybe at least one

(19:02):
play and maybe two to get to the end zone.
And win the game in regulation, going, hey, if the
coin flip goes against as Tom Brady is probably gonna
beat our defense. Uh. And so I think Andy Reid
kind of miscalculated that situation. I would I would agree
with you. You You know, like you took one shot at
the end zone, and even that it felt like my
homes just kind of threw it away. You know, have
a have a plan. You had the you know, you

(19:24):
had them backpedaling, You had the Patriots back pedaling and
and trying to slow you down, and you know, you
end up taking a time out and then deciding it's
not really worth it and throwing it away and then
kicking a field goal on second down. Then let me
you mentioned play calling. Let me go back to the
game that you were in sideline for um, most people

(19:44):
have given up a pass to Sean Payton for throwing
the ball on first down when they're clearly in field
goal range. They're at home, and the Rams had two
time outs. They could have led the Rams of time
outs the first two downs by running the football. Instead,
they threw it on first and threw it on third,
and so even though they they kicked a field goal,
they and they it should have been defensive past interference. UM.

(20:08):
The Rams had time left when they wouldn't have had
time otherwise, right time and the time out left. UM.
And and you're right, that was a key point in
the game. And that's also been overlooked. And I think
you can say that that was a strategic mistake by
Sean Payton, who's, you know, a very aggressive play caller,
and he put the ball in the hands of his
best two players. Uh, you know, the intent was for
Drew Brees to throw it to Michael Thomas. And I

(20:31):
did hear him criticized on the Westwood One broadcast by
Kurt Warner, who's you know, really did immediately question why
you would do that and stop the clock with an
incompletion like that rather than, you know, force the Rams
to use their final time out. UM. And then that
did wind up being a blunder as I understand it. Um,
the play call was a run, UM, but they then

(20:53):
recognized that the Rams were in a nine man front
to stop the run and then breathe in audible to
this pass play as quick slant that had personally been automatic.
I mean almost any pass he threw to Michael Thomas
has been an automatic completion this year like the highest
in the NFL by four, So it's an automatic pitching
catch normally for them. Unfortunately, Breeze through a four ball

(21:14):
at his feet, Thomas couldn't make catch. The Rams saved
forty seconds and a time out and ultimately acost the Saints. Yeah, breeze,
Breeze was not great. Let me ask you one other
question in regards to the game. Todd Gurley healthy, I
think not myself. Um uh, you know. Sean McVeigh he
insisted that he is healthy, um and said after the

(21:38):
game that I've got to do a better job of
getting Todd Moore involved. But I think the facts suggests
something else. And the rhetoric from McVeigh, while understandable, is
certainly hard to believe. I mean, keep in mind that
they shut him down in week seventeen and week sixteen
and seventeen because he was having, you know, problems with
his knee, and coaches I talked to said when you

(21:58):
watch a tape of the game before that he was
having a very hard time playing through it. It just
wasn't working. So then the Rams sled him for a
couple of weeks to get him ready for January Football.
They signed C. J. Anderson, a veteran who played exceptionally well. Um,
but for them to be playing for the Super Bowl
in the fourth quarter behind in the red zone and

(22:19):
a guy who's been on the field for of the
of the games throughout the season until the final weeks
who scored an NFL high twenty one touchdowns is not
out there to me? That speaks that something is wrong.
I mean, Anderson was in for fifty percent of the snaps.
Gurley was in forty six percent of the snaps. His
five touches were a career low, as were his thirteen

(22:40):
total yards, and his thirty two snaps were the fewest
he played in the game since he was a rookie,
and the fewest of any Rams offensive player that took
the field in that game against the Saints. So it'll
be interesting to see if these next two weeks can
make any kind of significant difference and they can get
a lot more out of Todd Gurley than they have
to this point. Stug gotlim show here on Fox Sport
Trade that's the voice of ed Order. What's the league

(23:03):
reaction to the Patriots being the Super Bowl again? Lee
reaction is, uh, they deserve it that, Um. You know,
they they've earned their way there. It's the ninth time.
This is the most remarkable thing about to me, Doug.
You know, in a league that's set up to penalize
the better teams and to create a sense of parody,
that the Patriots are going to their ninth Super Bowl

(23:26):
in the past eighteen years with the same quarterback, head coach,
and owner. Uh. And I know there's Patriots fatigue, um,
and people don't want to see the Patriots in the
Super Bowl every year, and this is the fourth time
in five years. But I think people ought to step
back and really respect what's been accomplished here. I mean,
this is a football dynasty unlike any we've seen, uh

(23:47):
during the current structure of the league, and people probably
ought to appreciate it, marvel at it, and be thankful
that they got to witness its firsthand. It's it's it's Um.
What about the idea that, hey, Brady, as much as
he said he wants to play until he's forty five,
you start your career beating the Rams in the Super Bowl,
you could end your career beating the Rams in the

(24:08):
Super Bowl. Is there any sense that this could be
his last football game. It doesn't sound like it. Um
he he continues to talk like he you know, he
loves the game and loves the competition and enjoys being
around his teammates. And you know, one of the one
of the things that struck me last year, uh in
the days before the game talking to Josh McDaniels, offensive

(24:29):
coordinator for twelve of the last fifteen years, UH, was
you know, he said, you would never know that Bradies
won even won Super Bowl, given how hard he prepares
throughout the course of the season and how much you
know these games, these opportunities mean to him. It's like
it's his first one. That there's really virtually no difference
in his demeanor and his personality and the way he
approaches the game. That he still is determined as he's

(24:52):
ever been. So my sense is he's there for the
long haul unless his contract becomes an issue. And and
quite honestly, Doug that they're not in a position to
reap something like they were when they had Jimmy Garoppolo. No,
they don't have an air apparent on the on the
roster right now, and so I think that Bradies are
a quarterback for the foreseeable future. Yeah, it's it's kind
of kind of fascinating to watch. Um. I I know

(25:13):
you you're an avid reader. I know you talk to
people in the league and and everybody has whispered about
the dysfunction within Cleveland over the past half decade plus. Um.
Seth Wickersham had an article and it it basically points
you went through kind of Jimmy Haslum in the missteps
of his ownership and now the kind of the hope
that has that has sprung from the success of Baker Mayfield. Um,

(25:35):
how how much does this happen within the league? Right?
Like you know all of these teams, you cover all
of these teams. How much of some of the mistakes
that are made by what we think our football people
really come from up top with owners sometimes getting involved
when they should not. Well, and it's mostly when an
owner hires, you know, a head coach or makes a
personnel decision like Haslm did in terms of drafting Johnny

(25:59):
Manziel Seth Wickersham, Uh, you know characterizes you know, very
well and in great detail. He's one of the best
writers on the NFL Uh that exists in our society today.
But yeah, I think Jimmy Haslem's indecisiveness. Uh, it's it's
kind of it's kind of pointed out here, and is
it decides us about people about the direction he wants
to follow. I think all of that has been a

(26:21):
huge issue for the Browns over the years. I mean,
the Browns haven't had a head coach last longer than
two seasons since Romeo Cornell was the coach from two
thousand and five two thousand and eight UM, And now
they're you know, putting their hopes in in Freddie Kitchens,
who has made this mercurial rise from running backs coach
when the season began to offensive coordinator by the time

(26:41):
it ended UH to head coach UH for the next season,
mainly because of his success with Baker Mayfield and their
desire internally to UM, you know, kind of bring back
the same offense and build on that and create that
same platform for Baker to have success going forward rather
than starting all over with the new system. But you know,
I mean I talked to somebody there when UH when

(27:04):
they played Denver, and I asked him to kind of
characterize the situation in Cleveland with Greg since Greg Williams
replaced Hugh Jackson and was told you they look at
this like a young team with a young quarterback who's
exceeding expectations, changing the perception of the entire franchise, that
all of the team's best players are very young guys

(27:24):
and really that the only thing that was holding them
back was quote a totally inept head coach, that being
Hugh Jackson, who obviously took great measures to try to
protect himself and too, you know, curry favor with Jimmy
Haslum and obviously somehow was retained when he was one
and thirty one, which is a historic achievement. Uh. And

(27:45):
probably his greatest one was his ability to survive his
own failure. Uh. And a lot of that I think
was because he kind of threw in with the analytics
approach that Haslm took at one point, uh not too
many years ago. Dougla show Fox Sport treated that's the
voice of Edward or Fallm on Twitter at Edward or
r F. A last thing, um, speaking of management ownership,
front office Cole Beasley came out on Twitter and of

(28:08):
course he readdressed it, but his initial comments were that, hey, like,
you know, play calling a lot of times comes down
from the top from management. The Cowboys have done everything
in their power now to say that that's not the case.
You know the Cowboys. Oh so Well, First, what does
this due to Cole Beasley standing within with within that franchise. Well,
Cole Beasley is as soon to be thirty year old

(28:32):
slot receiver, a very good player, one who was badly
underused in my opinion last year, especially in the red
zone where he's such a difficult guy to match up
with um And there's there's there's been a point of
contention really throughout the season, not only with his dissatisfaction
with his role, but he's a pending unrestricted free agent

(28:53):
and they've been trying to negotiate a contract, and there's
about a three million dollar a year difference of opinion
on what he's worth. He thinks he's worth nine million
a year. They think he's worth what Danny Amondla got
from the Dolphins, which was about six million a year. Uh.
And so while he's maintained you know, silence for most
of the season, it's not unusual, I think now to

(29:15):
see that he considers himself at all likelihood to be
leaving the franchise to be delivering some criticism and it's
and it's fair. I mean, we we all know Jerry
Jones is the owner and general manager, and he sits
in on coaches meetings and there's no question that you know,
he might try to, um move the coaching staff in
a direction one way or another. We've heard him characterize

(29:38):
conversations he's had in that way. So to me, that's
no real surprise that he would say something like that,
or that there might be some truth in it. Uh.
And the Cowboys are probably not the only franchise where
that's the case, but uh, it obviously gets a lot
of attention when when a Cowboys player rebukes the head
of the head of the entire franchise. Yeah, I look,
I I I mean I know that out Davis famously

(30:00):
would pick up the phone and call uh. And and
you know, maybe one of the reasons to Tom Cable, right,
So one of the reasons Tom Cable got fired was
Tom Cable instructed his coaches to not pick up the
phone and he would not you know, execute the game
plans that Al Davis would send down. Like I know that,
um that said, when you're a pending free agent, and
you do have equity. Even if you don't want to

(30:23):
go back to the Cowboys, it feels unnecessary and feels
it feels like a mistake. Right. I just even if
you feel that way and you know it to be true,
that doesn't mean you say it, especially on Twitter. Well,
I think he's kept his emotions and his and his
thoughts to himself for such a long period of time,
and now he felt like he had little or nothing

(30:45):
to lose because he doesn't see the Cowboys, you know,
reconciling with him and and coming up and creating the
value that he thinks he possesses. So I think he
just looks at it like it's over, and you know,
I now have nothing to lose in him. So I'm
going event the frustrations that I've kept to myself for
the past six months. Last thing Antonio Brown seems to

(31:06):
have now a window for a possible return is as ownership,
and now a couple of players are saying, hey, look,
you know we can work some things out. Um. Do
you think he's a Steeler Week one of the season
next year? Um? I tend to think not, uh, just
because I don't. While while some of the players of

(31:26):
the Pro Bowl, including Juju Smith, Schuster and Maurice Pouncey
have suggested that they could reconcile with him. I just
think what he did week seventeen, Um, all, all of
that makes him a player that's totally undependable in the
minds of the Steeler hierarchy. And it's a very conservative
franchise and it was only a week ago that Aren't Rooney,

(31:50):
the owner said he's had no contact with Antonio Brown,
which to me meant the players yet to apologize or
explain his behavior in his absence. Uh. And he said
they haven't had any trade discussions about him at this point.
But he said as far as him returning in there
are quote not many signs out there that that's going
to happen. Uh. And when at the end of you know,

(32:11):
his final press conference of the season, when Mike Tomlin
was asked if Antonio Brown quit on the Steelers, he said,
you can call it what you want to call it.
So to me, those that's kind of sends the message
that the Steelers are done with him. You know, could
could the situation calm down? Could um Antonio Brown somehow
asked for forgiveness and make a public apology that the

(32:32):
Steelers would accept. Yeah, but I just kind of think
it's a long shot and there's probably some value in
a trade that they can acquire for him, given that
his contract is pretty low and he's you know, he's
a terrific receiver. He could be the best receiver who's
ever been traded in the prime of his career. So, uh,
for all of those reasons. If you asked me to
answer your question, uh, and you did, I'll say that
he won't be there, but I wouldn't completely rule it out.

(32:53):
And order gonna have a ton of stuff on his

Tiger is playing the South, the course that we played

He's in a group at five under par, currently in

McElroy at one under par. I'm texting CT pans some
thoughts on some of the grains. I'm sure. I'm sure
he'll answer. The Dodgers answered the hole, CT below the

the Dodgers call. They've agreed on a four year contract

we've covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing or two. We
are farmers under written my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges

I just a little clarification on the Pollock deal. That

(35:46):
doesn't that mean they're not They're not going after Bryce Harper,
doesn't it? I mean, right like Pleague gone, Camp Gone.
It allows Cody Bellinger to to go back to first base,
so you got you know, key k and and you
could use Chris Taylor sum in center as well if
you if you wanted to. And he's not a platoon guy,
so he's an everyday guy who I think that's a

(36:08):
pretty good price for him, considering that he was offered
a like a seventeen million dollar qualifying offer. That's the
sense that I get, Doug that would rather go this
cheaper out with Pollock than even on a short term
deal with Price Harper. Yeah, Yeah, and he had look
last year twenty one home runs. But remember he missed
two months of the season because he had a broken thumb.
So I yeah, and you know what, And I know

(36:29):
it's about winning, but there are some teams who and
there are very few that may want to put fans
in the seats. The Dodgers don't have that problem, so
people but harper to that, right. But but they do
want to win a World Series. But there is a budget.
There's a budget there. And remember you, I think it's fascinating.
You know. This thing is everybody thinks the Dodgers have

(36:50):
endless sums of money. Maybe they do, but one there's
the luxury tax. And two they're run by a guy
who came from the Tampa baye Devil Rays, so he
if you have to manage a budget, and they're gonna
manage it more so than a lot of people would
think based upon Dodgers teams of the past. Guess who

(38:20):
side on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Don't dan buyer, what
do you got for us how the game Doug today
is all right? Do guess who was a backup quarterback
in the NFL that wants to be a starter, even though,
as general manager said, they likely are trading him. Yeah,

(38:41):
a couple of caveats then, Blake Portles, no m Nick
nick Foles. You know I threw this one out there
out I threw this one out there a couple of
weeks ago because I thought they could get a haul
for him for a desperate team. The answer is Colts
quarterback Jacobe Brissette. Remember he manned Colts offense when he

(39:05):
was when Andrew Luck was out. Now the cults of
one of the better quarterbacking situations and for a Colts
team that is close. If you could get a bunch
for your backup quarterback, why wouldn't you. But Chris Ballard
said that they have to be blown away with an
offer to trade Brissette. But Brissette told Fox fifty nine
in Indianapolis that sure he wants to be a starter.
You know what backup doesn't want to be? Answer? Guess

(39:27):
who dug Raiders head coach John Gryden thinks is the
best player he has ever coached, or ever saw or
has ever seen. Uh, he's coached a lot of good ones.
Derrick Brooks, who knows, you know, did Jerry Rice? You're
getting warmer? Tim Brown, who knows the answer is Sterling Sharp? Yes,

(39:51):
certainly was great. People forget Yes, the neck injury ended
his career. He was asked today on what Hall of
Fame player or what player that is a into the
Hall of Fame should be, and he said Sterling Sharp
and then added the best player he's ever coached and
best he's ever seen. Guests who dug are the only

this that seven promotional giveaways will feature Trout. Three others
for the Angels will feature Otani. Well, the question with
Otani is how does he play as he's you know,
he's rehabing the elbow, right, I mean, that's that's the
big question with Otani. But he was great last year

(40:46):
before he got hurt, both pitching and hitting, and still
finished up hitting pretty good. I will say this like,
nobody's going for any of the other players, so you
want to you do want to promote your best Uh
Doug guests who on the crew called Kevin Durant two
face on Twitter never no music. Yes, it was part

(41:07):
of a last week when DeMarcus Cousins was making his comeback.
What was this a Marvel thing? Ryan Music? And yeah,
it looked like it was. Bleacher Report did a Marvel
breakdown of the players on the Warriors and they made
Kevin Durant has to face and I just thought that
was hilarious. Yeah. A little quote retweet as well from

(41:27):
Ryan Music. Very nice, very nice. I'm glad that's game time.
This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. I'm
so interesting. I mean, not that anybody's going for Justin
Upton or Anderson Simmons, but I'm still kind of intrigued
by the fact they don't even get a bubblehead night.

(41:49):
I don't even get a bubblehead night. Um. I want
to see that new h M. Night Shamalan movie. Uh.
Mr Glass right, that's really yeah, yeah, which is a
sequel coming up next James Harden's on a historic run.

Put their experience into play. At Farmers dot com we

(42:32):
are Farmers. James Harden has been ridiculous, I mean just ridiculous.
Thirty six points in the first half. That was good.
Ends up with sixty sixty one points. Sixty one points wow,
which tied Kobe Bryant for the most visiting player in

(42:54):
the current version of Madison Square Garden, which technically opened
in sixty eight, although it was redone a couple of
years ago to the tune of a billion dollars. Is
the fifth player in NBA history to record multiple sixty
point games, uh joining Elgin Baylor, Michael Jordan's, Kobe Bryant,
Wilt Chamberlain. Harden also tied Rick Berry with his fifty

(43:15):
plus point game. Only Elgin Baylor. Elgin Baylor, by the way,
one of the most underrated, historically, historically unbrated players in
the history of the sport. Elgin, Baylor, Kobe Jordan's and
Chamberlain had more hardened as now twenty one consecutive games
of at least thirty points at least thirty points. And

(43:36):
I don't know if you've seen this, guys, have you
seen this? This stat about um, how long it's been
since he had an assisted basket? That that somebody right,
that that somebody passed to him for a shot. Have
you seen this? That that stat is maybe the craziest part.
He scored two hundred and sixty three consecutive points without

(44:00):
anybody setting him up. And like, this thing is cool,
it is fun, It is amazing, It is amazing, amazing.
But it's one hard to watch at times, and two

(44:21):
it isn't getting anyone better. It just isn't. Look, there
are a lot of there, there are a lot of
logical reasons why when you have injuries around you you do.
What Houston has done is like, well, what if we
just gave it to our best player and let him

(44:42):
make all of the plays. Like there is a lot
like I do it when I'm coaching my son's team.
My wife just drys are crazy, like why don't you
run other plays for other kids? And I was like,
because they can dribble. So we cut that out and
let my little dude make plays. And he makes the
right reads. If he's open, he shoots night passed is
and his teammates can catch and shoot the basketball. It
takes their they don't have to make decisions that they're

(45:04):
not capable of making. But but this has reached state,
This has reached a point of ridiculousness two hundred sixty
three points without anybody assisting at the beast. That means
he's not letting the he's not letting anybody else have
a chance to create. He's doing everything himself. And that's

(45:27):
a mistake that just doesn't It just doesn't make you better,
you know, it just doesn't make you better. And it
doesn't make those guys better because you're gonna need them
at some point. You need to art even if it's artificially.
You need to inflate their confidence. It's one of the

(45:48):
things that that frankly, Phil Jackson doesn't get enough credit for.
He just doesn't and that he understood that you're you're
playing for the postseason. You're everything you're preparing for is
for the postseason. Now, do I do? I know they
have injuries? Yeah? I do? Do I think their roster
isn't as good as it was before, of course, of course.

(46:11):
And so here's James Harden, who's you know, they just
signed Kenny f Reed starting Kenny f Reed and p J.
Tucker who can't remember to touch the basketball when it's
in bounds, Austin Rivers and Eric Gordon, that's are starting lineup.
They're only playing eight guys, and so he has to
carry them, and he did. He was. I know, he's
only five of twenty from three point range, which is awful,
But other than that, I mean seventeen and thirty eight

(46:33):
getting layups and shooting threes, and and twenty two of
five from the free throw line, four assists, five turnovers.
I mean, he just had the ball every seemingly every
time down the court. But if you don't, it's one
thing to emotionally, mentally in the back of your mind
not trust other players to make plays. But when you

(46:55):
just don't trust him to make plays at all, those
guys feel that, and there's gonna be a time in
the playoffs, when Harden is either gonna run a gas
is gonna hit a cold streak, and then you're gonna
pass it to those other guys and say, hey, we
need you to make some buckets, We need you to
make some plays, and like, look, I haven't been doing
this all year. I gotta give guys just a little

(47:18):
bit of taste of success and a little bit even
a little bit of taste of failure in order to
get them ready for when it really really matters. Because
nobody cares how many points he averages, how many crazy
games he has. They just don't. I know they're playing
without Clint Capella. I know they're playing without Chris Paul,

(47:38):
even though he's likely to return very soon. And when
you have Chris Paul back, he'll be making some of
those plays and take some of the pressure off James Harden.
But he's not allowing anybody else to develop. No one
else's confidence is developing because they they believe, and based
upon the structure of how they're playing, they are solely

(47:59):
dependent on James Hardened to either create a shot for
himself or to create a shot for them. For them,
Ryan Music, what do you think do you think based
off of last season, because we agree, before Chris Paul
got hurt, they had played pretty well together. Going into it.
There were doubts at if Chris Paul and James Harden

(48:21):
could fit well style wise, but they seem to work
it out. Best record had the Warriors against the Ropes.
Then Chris Paul goes out with an injury. Do you
do you expect it to go back to that where
they will play together well and balance out or do
you think James Harden will struggle to readjust given the
way he's played for the past several weeks and then
trying to go back to the way he played with

(48:43):
Chris Paul. Oh, I think he'll like the fact that
he doesn't have one. I don't know. We don't know
what Chris Paul is going to look like, right, I mean,
let's just be honest, Like Chris Paul is is he
thirty four years old? So, I mean the first thing
to think about with Chris Paul is Chris Paul is
thirty three years old. He turns thirty four in May.

(49:04):
So we don't know what Chris Paul is gonna look like.
How many injuries does he have to suffer and suffer
and he wasn't shooting the ball well before he got hurt.
To her, like you know, and I love Chris Paul,
but we can just sit there and go, well, Chris
Paul isn't the Chris Paul he used to be. Remember,
before he got hurt, he played in twenty six games.

(49:24):
He was shooting a career low field goal percentage and
only career low. And because of it is a syste
number still relatively low as well, you play more minutes
than last year, but averaging essentially the same number of
assists as last year. So he's gonna have the ball less.
I just do. I think I think he'll welcome some

(49:45):
of it because it will be a bit of a relief.
But this is now his default, and this is now
how you're wiring the team to be solely dependent like
and and the problem with that and again, like I
told you, I played this way with my son in
essentially wrecked ball. The problem with that is and this happened.
Actually the toy his last last week is that he

(50:06):
just went through a game where he couldn't make anything, like,
couldn't make a layuper early, couldn't make a shot. You know,
you get to one of those spots where you can't.
And he had played, you know, it was his fifth
basketball game in the day, so maybe that was some
some part of it. You become so solely dependent upon
it that when that guy has a bad day, or
if that guy is in sharp, or if that guy uh,

(50:27):
they find a way to shut it, get the right
defenders to shut him down. No one else has the
confidence forget about the the game. They don't have the
confidence to do it because the coaches basically told them
this is the way we play. You don't even need
to have so many words. This is the way we play.
We play off of James Harden. Don't believe me. Two

(50:48):
D and sixty three consecutive points scored without anyone else assisting.
Don't worry, guys, I got it myself. He just can't.
It's not that it's not a sustainable way. It's like
anybody who's done a radio show. Oh, you know, it's
like when you're the host, you know you want to
book your own guests, Like, you can't do that three
d sixty five days a year. You can't. You need
somebody who books, You need somebody who directs or produces

(51:11):
the show. You need somebody else to run your board.
And I know there's plenty of guys who listening to
the show that do like local local shows in a
small market, Like, hey, I do all that stuff. It's
exhausting and it hurts the product at some point, and
be like, man, you need to you need to delegate.
James Harden don't know how to delegate. Even assist is
not delegating. That's me saying here, I'm so good, I'm

(51:34):
going to create a shot for you. You need to
help the confidence of others and let them create a
shot for you for you in return, all right, we
got a great hour for you. A very unfortunate season
ending injury to Victor la Depot. You guys see, it
was non contact injury. Last night. They're playing against the
Toronto Raptors. Who's running back, I think against Saka moves

(51:56):
back about to get a dunk, and all of a
sudden his leg gave out. He's dreamed and then they
you know, they covered up the right knee with a towel.
That that's not good. I actually think it proposes a
really complicated question for the Pacers. We'll try and break
it down for you. That's up coming next, but first look.

guys see what Jamal Adams did? Did you see this thing? So?
Jamal Adams is a Pro Bowl safety for the New

(54:07):
York Jets. He's at the Pro Bowl practice. Uh, They're
signing autographs to fans, and he sees the Patriots mascot waving,
shaking hands, kissing babies, taking pictures I would say thirty
yards away from him, and on cue, Jamal Adams stop
signing autographs, looks up and sees the Patriots mascot and

(54:28):
um look like kind of comically so at first, approaching
the Patriots mascot. Patriots mascot is just you know, I
don't even know it's a male or female, And I
don't know. Jamal Adams probably doesn't either. Right, he's literally
or she's literally wearing a costume. And it wasn't vicious
per se. It wasn't like he came in, you know,

(54:49):
heat sinking missile, launched his body into the Patriots mascot
fully padded and then counted him or her out, But
he did go and tackle him or her and then
walked away as the Patriots mascot was writhing in pain.
Apparently Patriots mascot was taken to the hospital. And I again,

(55:13):
it's it's a joke or you something trying to do.
It's funny. Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. I
don't that is a football guy thing like that is
an absolute I was actually absolute meat head thing right

(55:33):
there to do. I mean, what a football guy thing
you think it? Think about it? Did you see this buyer.
Have you got music? Have you seen this Rahm with
Have you guys seen this video? What do you think?
I mean, I think it looks like he hit him
harder than he intended to. Yeah, the problem is the

(55:59):
mask that still has the smile on his face, so
he still don't think he's okay. Yeah, even though he
turned over in obvious pain. I mean, I feel bad
for the person in there. I just am not is
up in arms as people are. I'm not. I'm not
I'm not up in arms about it. Like obviously I
think it was a joke gone wrong. But this is
the you know what reminds me of so I once

(56:20):
um Roy Jones jr. Uh likes to think of himself
as a basketball player, so he I played in the
league called the usb L, the now just defunct usb
LU Muggsy Bogus playing it once you know Minute Bowl
played in lots of and in the team I was
on in Oklahoma City, we had I would say three

(56:41):
quarters of our team had played in the NBA. Like
it was a really really good league. Random in terms
of the locations of some of these teams. We're in Enid, Oklahoma.
We had Willie Burton who was a first round draft
pick in the draft. We had Um, We had Bondzi Wells,
who had led the country and scoring. He was a
second round draft pick. We had a good group of
NBA former NBA players, and Roy Jones Jr. Had partially

(57:06):
owned the team in Fort Myers. I know, uh in
Sarah Sota. There's a Fort Myers team that was coached
um by Barry, by Rick Berry, and there was a
Sarah like a Sara Sota team. And I just remember
Roy Jones um flying in on his private jet into Enid, Oklahoma.

(57:28):
And anyway, we're at the free throw lines, is like
fourth quarter, and one of my teammates is like, yo, Roy,
I'm gonna tell everybody. I'm gonna gonna sue you and
say you hit me like we were in a lose
ball and you hit me. And he's and he said,
and this is true. If you ask boxers, they have
to register their hands basically are registered as lethal weapons.
He's like, men, don't fool around with that. Seriously, Like
I if I hit a normal person, like I could

(57:51):
lose everything because I have to you know, part of
like having personal insurances, I have to agree to never
punching anybody, like I can't get into barroom brawl because
my hands are registered like as lethal weapons. And so
you kind of your football player, you kind of have
to think like you have to think of yourself as
a lethal weapon, especially when your Jamal Adams, a defensive
player who gets paid to hit people. I can't believe

(58:13):
you did that. I'm not outraged, but it just does
feel like he feels Jamal Adams feels like that guy
that the high school football player that thought it would
be funny to pick up and spike the male cheerleader.
And then in this instance, it's just a mascot, Like Jamal,
you do know those fake muscles on the Patriots mascot
are fake muscles. It was just the second time a

(58:37):
Jet tackle the Patriot this season, so that it's very nice,
very nicely done. Um uh, you guys see the Victor
Oladipo injury is uh uh is a tough one to watch.
I mean, look, it's devastating to that franchise. So Victor

(58:58):
Oladivo has a rubbed sure quad tendon, and so if
you want to know what a rubtured quad tendon or
what rehab like that is like I have a friend
who is one of the best need doctors in the
state of California, and when he saw the said I
thought that might be what happened. Recovery is probably similar

(59:19):
to an Achilles tendon. First, you have to repair repair
the quad tendon to the patela, so when it rubtures,
that means the the quad tendon comes off of the patela,
off of the knee. You gotta keep the knee straight
for four to six weeks straight, so it's not like
you're in a brace and you're walking around to allow

(59:39):
early here healing of the quad tendon to the bone,
and just the fact that it ripped off the bone
sounds really gruesome. Then you start gentle range of motion
for four to six weeks postop motion four to six
weeks postops, so four to six weeks you don't move
it at all, so you get earlier he and then
you start gentle range of motion. Goal for full motion

(01:00:01):
is by three to four months. Light quad strengthening at
around four months. Jogging begins somewhere between four and six months.
The quad will probably take nine months to heal to
get it back how it was. Making full recovery somewhere
between nine and twelve months. Now. Victor Oladippo is in

(01:00:24):
the prime of his athletic career. There's no reason to
believe that he can't return and regain to mostly the
same level of athleticism. And I think he was I'm
pretty sure he's a left leg jumper's like that does matter,
and this was his right knee. Nonetheless, you're the Pacers
in a wide open or what felt like a wide

(01:00:46):
open year in the East, and you've already gotten to
mid season, Like, what do you what do you do?
Because Oladipo, even if it's if it's nine to twelve
months recovery, that means you don't get him back until
next year, at this time, next year, at this time.

(01:01:06):
So so now what do you do? They're thirty two
and fifteen, like they're too far in. If they lost
every game the rest of the season, they still wouldn't
end up with the most with the most ping pong balls, right,
they just wouldn't. This is a devastating injury, right you

(01:01:27):
have Cleveland's got nine wins, Nicks had ten, Bulls have eleven.
By the way, the Knicks have basically said everybody but
Prozingis uh and a couple of the young guys can
can be had via trade. The Bulls have eleven wins,
like you're Atlanta has fifteen, and they gotta I think
they gotta win last night, Right, they beat the hell
out of the Bulls last night. So you're not going

(01:01:48):
to crack the top for the bottom four in terms
of lottery ping pong balls. So what do you do.
I kind of think you gotta keep going for it.
You kind of gotta just keep pushing ahead. And you
got you gotta understand you're probably gonna be mediocre and
a playoff team that everybody wants to play this year,

(01:02:10):
and then maybe next year. You tank because you've got
Oladipo coming back the following year. Like that's a that's
basically what the Knicks have done this year. Right, Prezingis
got hurt at a point time last year and it's
such a bad injury, like he could technically come back
at the end of this season, possibly, But what's the
point You're you're trying to tank, you're trying to be bad.

(01:02:32):
You've accomplished that task. You bring him back next year,
you add in a free agent. You've gotten everybody else
a bunch of run. But man, does that change completely
change the playoff picture, your your your franchise's trajectory. And

(01:02:52):
if you're a Pacer fan, you're sitting there going like, again,
are you kidding me? Like we had Paul George, We're
in the Eastern Conference finals in our prime and then
he breaks his leg and half playing with in USA.
Then you have Victor Oladipot And did I think do
I think they overachieved? Like, yeah, I don't. I don't
think they were the third best team in the East.
But now, if you're an Eastern Conference playoff team, you've

(01:03:12):
gotta be sitting there thinking to yourself like, man, I
don't know what happens to the Pacers and how many
they win, but if they get in the playoffs, that's
who I want to play. That's who I want to play.
In sports of trade can make or break your team.
It's no different when it comes to selling or trading
your car. You need to make good choices in when

you're ready to sell or trade in your car, check

Eric Mangini is coming up just around the corner. First,
let's check in with Dan Buyer. Dan when he got
Doug Moore injury news at the NBA, But it could
be good news for a couple of Western Conference teams.
The Rockets could get Chris Paul back as soon as
tomorrow night against the Raptors. He's missed about five weeks
because of a hamstring injury. That news, according to ESPN.

(01:03:55):
While the Lakers could get Rajon Rondo back tonight against
the Timberwolves. He did take part and shoot around and
trying to return from a natured finger. There will be
no Lebron tonight for the Lakers, still out with that
groin injury against Minnesota. You touched on Victor Oladipo being
out for the season. Dodgers have agreed to a four
year contract without fielder Aj Pollock. The deal is reportedly
worth fifty five million dollars Fox Sports Ken Rosendals is

(01:04:17):
the Mariners have sound reliever Hunter Strickland. Rangers have inked
to deal with in fielder Es Drubal Cabrera on a
one year contract. Ravens will officially announce the contract extension
for ed coach John Harbaugh Tomorrow, we'll let the Farmer's

seven shots back of the lead held by John rom

Tiger and it's half for sixty one at one under par.
We'll be back to the Doug gottlim showing ten seconds.

(01:05:22):
Leave show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's catch up
with our good friend Eric Manginie. You can see him
on First Things First and of course throughout the Fox
family of networks. Of course, former head coach the Cleveland Browns.
I'm gonna get to that, former head coach in New
York Jets, and a longtime assistant with New England Patriots,
and and and Erica. I know you've seen both sides
of the Patriots, coaching for and against them. Um, take

(01:05:46):
me through the first half though, Like I thought, the
first half of football from the Patriots was the best
coaching and preparation execution of a game plan I may
have ever seen. Um, what what did you see from
a coach's eye that most of us missed and allowed
the Patriots? They should have got out to a fourteen
nothing lead, um, scoring again right before the end of

(01:06:06):
the half, as they usually do. But they got the
opening kickoff, marched down the field and got the next
punt and marched out to what did you see from
the paths? Well, the thing that was frustrating to me
from from the Kansas City perspective, and and this is
where experience comes into play, is that throughout the whole
first half, J C. Jackson, a rookie phrase and from
Maryland who's about five ten, was on Travis Kelsey man

(01:06:30):
demand with no help. The safety was actually pushing over
the top of Tarik Hill. And so that's the situation
that should have been exploited. And this is a guy
does that had ten passive apearance penalties in the last
two years of college and later on in the game
when they finally got to him, you know, he had
two or three in the game. So they let that

(01:06:50):
that slide. And then the other thing that New England
did really well is take advantage away that the Kansas
City pass sets. They set their tackles so deep to
New England, rain their ends up the field and then
come underneath and wrap the tackles around. And they kept
Mahomes in the pocket, which was huge. I think that
the Kansas City miss some great opportunities to move the

(01:07:12):
pocket to get Mahomes out of out of that box
that New England put him in. And then all the
plays that that Kelsey could have had but didn't against
the rookie free agent from Maryland. Yeah, so so help
me with that, okay, because one of the things I've
always been told about the offense that Andy Reid is
now running, um is that look, they dress it all up,

(01:07:36):
but you know, there's a lot of kind of basic
plays made to look very very different, and there's a
lot of what they call window window dressing on it.
Was it they just got caught up in running their
offense and not reacting. Do they need to go in
the have to? Why? Why couldn't they adjust to the
game plan of the Patriots on the fly? Oh all right, Well,

(01:08:02):
I think we're trying to fix that. That that clicking
noise that was that was taking place if you if
you heard it from uh from the Coach Doug Gotlap
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Eric Mangini is our guest,
former head coach the Browns, the Jets, longtime assistant with
the Patriots, course in the NFL Analysts. You see him
on First Things First, as well as other TV shows
on the Fox family of networks, including Speak for Yourself

(01:08:24):
as well. We're discussing the Patriots first half and it's
it's interesting right that they it's more of a basketball
It feels like I'm more of a basketball approach and Belichick, right,
take the take what the team does and let's kind
of take away from it and find it's pragmatism is
also whereas that's that's not traditional for for football coaches.
Football coaches usually are, hey, we do what we do

(01:08:46):
and if we do it well, then we'll execute. Okay,
So why Eric, did they have to wait till half
time to make some adjustments. Why can't you make adjustments
on the fly? Well, I think as a young player,
you're going with this idea of what's going to happen.
So they doubled Kelsey in the first game, so you
assume that Kelsey is going to be doubled again, as
opposed to just looking at what's happening. And someone should

(01:09:09):
have gotten to that earlier and said, Okay, look, this
is what they're doing. We need to get the ball
to to Kelsey. We need to feed it to him.
And then, from a past our standpoint, if they are
doing a good job of keeping in the pocket, because
he does. He does so many good things when he's
outside of it. On those those unscripted scrambles, now move them,

(01:09:29):
move them, getting make sure that he gets a chance
to put the pressure on New England's defense. And they didn't.
And when it happened in the second half, and he
was able to move around a little bit more, and
then and when they were able to take advantage of
the match up with Kelsey. Things changed dramatically, just too late.
I mean, you can't get shut out at home when

(01:09:52):
you've got that type of offense and then decide, okay,
we're gonna fire Bob Sutton. It's his fault, you know, yeah,
so so so then let's take me the Patriots perspective.
I know, um, we could kind of see it coming
all year long, that they were they wanted to continue
to work on running the football, on being you know,
taking some of the pressure off of Tom, allowing him

(01:10:13):
to you know, use use play action. But also like, look,
there's a reason that they kept a fullback. There's a
reason that they drafted Sony Michelle in the first round.
They wanted to be able to run the football. Um,
but part of the game plan was also keeping that
was it was what people used to do to Tom
when you were there, which is keep him off the field.
They try to do that to my homes right, long
sustained drives and just hammering you with running plays. That

(01:10:37):
is that fair that that was the Patriots game plan offensively, Well,
that's that's absolutely fair. And it worked and he saw
how explosive Kansas City could be they ended up scoring
what in the twelve minutes of time obsession they had
in the second half. Ye had those long sustained drives
keeping off the field. But in terms of running the ball,

(01:10:57):
the other thing it does is it slows down the
pass rushers. And they did a nice job of incorporating
the runs but then mixing in the wide receiver screens
using Quoduol Patterson not just for gadgets, but as a
decoy to set other things up. And and that to
me is another advantage they have with Josh McDaniels and
Dante Starnekia and the experience of being able to build

(01:11:21):
these packages and then show one thing. The next time,
show the same look, do something totally different, and now
the defense is constantly on their heels as opposed to
keying off and putting pressure on top they used Burke
had a bunch in the fourth quarter into overtime. Was
that because of something they saw matchup wiser because just

(01:11:41):
the experience that he had knowing he wasn't gonna fumble,
he was going to do all the little things that
that long time NFL players do, as oppose to Michelle
who has way more upside and and did you know
finish with a touchdown, had a big touchdown run. But
what what was that? Was that planned because of experience
in the game of that magnitude. Well, no, Typically, if
you're going to the game, you've got some kind of role,

(01:12:02):
you've got some kind of package that that you're gonna play.
And that was probably the package of plays that they
had for him, as opposed to the package that they
had for PERSONI or James White. So each guy has
a hold. He see the same thing. Defensively, where guys
will show up, whether it's the nickel defense or maybe
it's a smaller version of the nickel, there's roles and

(01:12:25):
as they put in the calls. That's how guys contribute
during of course the game. Doug gotlib show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Um, we had We've had others on
to discuss this, even Charlie Weiston discussed it. Romo calling
out where Tom should go or what Tom's gonna do. Um,

(01:12:45):
he's the first guy on CBS to do that. But
when did you you you have the same reaction when
you see things like is this normal or was was?
Was Romo doing something that no other people don't do
in the league. Well, look, Tony's been a really good quarterback,
or was a really good quarterback, and he was a
guy that had to work hard at his craft and

(01:13:07):
he studied, and its apparent when when he's calling games
and when you look at it, Tom and and and
most established quarterbacks, if you don't disguise coverage, there's a
certain place that you you should go with the ball
based off of what the weaknesses of the defense. And
so as Tony looks out there and there's no disguise
with the coverage, then you know, okay, Bronx isolated outside,

(01:13:30):
it's post safety. Throwut the grog. It's a split safety.
You've got two deep safeties and and uh, you've got
Julian Edelman motioning in. You know, the ball is probably
gonna go to him on the over route, just based
off of the pre snap look. And and that's a
big part of trying to defeat Tom is giving in
different looks, forcing him to make post snap decisions. So, um,

(01:13:56):
I guess the question. You said, Look, there's a lot
to the offense that could have protected the defense, but
Bob Sutton's defense did get gouged on third down as
a problem all year and got gouged you know, throughout
the season as well. Um, should he have disguised it?
Could he have disguised it? That? Could Bob Sutton have
done something differently? Yeah? You know what, you know what

(01:14:17):
we would have really helps is if de Ford lined
up on side, DFD lines up on side. They picked
Tom Brady off three times in one game, and we
are having a totally different discussion and we're talking about
what a great job they did, what an amazing job
Bob did. But because a guy lines up all sides
and the gates an intercession with two minutes left, now

(01:14:40):
he's the guy that gets fired. And look those third
down and long completions. Yeah, there were some really good throws,
there were some really good catches, there were some excellent
execution by New England. But you've also got three pretty
good pass archers up front. There's there's got to be
some accountability there as well. If you have to scheme
everything up to get pressure on the quarterback, why are

(01:15:02):
you paying all those guys money, the big money. Eric
Mangini joining us in the Doug Otlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. Any sense that Tom says, Look, man, everybody
said we couldn't do it, we did it, and we
did it against the Rams. We started this thing against
the Rams. I know I could go back and try
and get that fight, fight and fight for more. But
I'm good. You know, get get your six super Bowl ring.

(01:15:25):
They win. You think he shuts it down. No. I
think that's one of the things about greatness and and
Tom is that each time they set a bar, the
great ones decide how or figure out how they're going
to reset the bar. And that, to me is what
Tom's doing. And as long as she feels like he

(01:15:46):
can play at a high level, which there's no indication
that he he can't or be he's had a change
of heart of what he said last year when we
were talking about Jimmy Garoppolo, I would imagine, win or lose,
he'll be back to see if he can do it again.
And there's an article out today from the place we
used to work about the Cleveland Brown steph Wick there.
Sham talked about the clean Bows. Now, Jimmy Hassum wasn't

(01:16:08):
the owner when you were there, but it does paint
the picture of an immense amount of dysfunction, uh from
a top and that's one of the reasons that franchise
has struggled. When you read the article about the Browns,
what was your reaction. This is a conversation that I've
I've had with a couple of owners, and oftentimes owners
have been really successful in the industry that that they're in.

(01:16:31):
The pro sports is so different, and it's it's like
doing business in China. You're at the mercy of the translator,
and you're always going to be at the mercy of
the information for an owner that that you're given from
different people. So the normal things that work don't necessarily
work in football, and the normal um solutions that you

(01:16:54):
find that they don't always apply. And sometimes as much
as these guys want to go in six problems and
they want things to happen right now, it doesn't always
work that way. And there's real value to continuity. You know,
oftentimes they want you to cook a turkey, but they
wanted in a microwave, and and that's not that's not
how it works, and it's not how you create an

(01:17:16):
organization that's that's sustainable, that can compete for a championship
year in and year out. So every year, if you're
trying to put out some fire. Often times you're just
starting three or four fires somewhere else. Last thing, how
egregious do you believe as a former head coach, the
error was from the play caller and Sean Payton not

(01:17:36):
running the ball first and second and third down and
decreasing the possibility of the Rams having enough time to
kick a game time field goal. Yeah, I don't think
that was agregious at all. And he talked about the
fact that they got a pressure look and that's why
they checked to the past. If you go back to
the first game against the Rams, the Rams scored with
twenty six seconds left in the first half, that got

(01:17:58):
the ball back with any six seconds they went down,
they kicked a field goal. So if they had run
the ball three times and eating at the time out,
the Rands would have had fifty seconds and we would
have said, well, why wouldn't they put the ball in
their best player's hand, Why wouldn't they Why wouldn't they've
given Drew Brees a chance to win the game. And
all the time we celebrate. You know, this head coach

(01:18:19):
takes chances. This head coach is a gambler, This head
coach is gonna win the game. Well, don't be mad
at him when he's true to his personality and it
doesn't work out. You know, you're kicking onside kicking the
Super Bowl. Everybody celebrated that, So you're putting your the
ball in your best player's hands. Okay, it didn't work out.

(01:18:40):
There's no guarantee they were gonna win even if he
did that. Anyways, I look forward. I'll beat you. Give
me in Atlanta. I'm not I'm gonna be in New
York doing first things first. All right, Well, I'll be
up doing first things first later on the month. I
hope to see you then the meantime, Thanks so much
for your inside man, and we'll talk to you real soon.

Apparently Jimmy HASSLM didn't like Teddy Bridgewater's handshake. I actually
get it, I'll explain at the top of the hour.
Could completely get it. In the meantime, let's get to
some breaking news of Dan Buyer Dan want breaking news

(01:20:05):
from Fox Sports. Two notes from the NFL. First, the
Ravens made it official head coach John Harbaugh. It's a
four year contract extension to remain in Baltimore. Well, the
Panthers have just announced that quarterback Cam Newton underwent arthroscopic
surgery on his injured rights shoulder. No timetable for Newton's
return and no timetable on when he will begin work

(01:20:27):
or anything like that. Doug, but Cam Newton did have
shoulder surgery. According to the Carolina Panthers. Um help me out.
Did it say exactly what was done? I I saw
the I saw the tweet go out, and I've seen
it pass on my email. But did it say what
was actually done to the shoulder. No, it just says
quarterback Cam Newton underwent an arthroscopic procedure on his right
shoulder Thursday. It was performed by the team physician, and

(01:20:48):
the rehab process will begin immediately. That's it, all right. Well,
the fact that it was a team physician does make
you feel like if he goes to James Andrews, you know,
and and look not to James Andrews doesn't screw up
some surgeries. I mean nobody, nobody hits even on surgeries,
even though they'll tell you, you you know, every surgery want
according to plan. The point is this that I actually

(01:21:12):
it makes me think it wasn't as big an issue,
Like you could have an impingement. But if you like,
if it's a legit rotator cuff problem, you go and
get the best rotator cuff guy in the country to
do it. And if it's a if it's an elbow problem,
you go and get the best elbow guy to do it.
If you have your team position do it. It means look,
here's something minor, any any any mook could do it,

(01:21:35):
and that's how they did it. Let's get to let's
get to what the fox says say. Here's Colin Cowherd
drawing some parallels between Tom Brady and Jared Golf. There
are three reasons that I think are really important factors
that Brady and Golf share. Number One, teammates loved I

(01:22:00):
mean they love Brady. You never heard and even Randy
moss Leaves still loves him. Nobody bad mouth Brady, opposite
of Aaron Rodgers. Nobody bad mouse him. The respect Jared
Goff shares in that Rams locker room is very Brady like.
The second thing is Tom Brady came into this league
and and ran about as fast as I did at

(01:22:21):
the NFL Combine and was kind of mocked for his body.
I don't think it's a coincidence that Brady's body and
physique and athleticism have been mocked and yet he is
now twenty years later, the most body obsessed player. Similarly,
Goff came into this league. Look, skinny couldn't take a snap.
Jared Goff heard what everybody said. He doesn't even look

(01:22:43):
like a number one pick. The third thing that I
think is big motivation kind of separates people. Some people
have that chip on their shoulder, others don't. Brady, despite
his ninth Super Bowl, there are people that call him
a system quarterback. And that is because of one thing,
Bill Belichick, who does off half the next Belichick the genius.

(01:23:04):
I think it's I think there are some interesting parallels.
I really do, UM, And I think that much like
when Tom Brady won his first Super Bowl, it was
more because of their defense, right, It's more because their
running game. It was more because of everybody else. And
slowly he kind of assimilated to the job. He Jared
Goff is gonna fake it till he makes it, which

(01:23:26):
is what Tom Brady was allowed to do. UM. But
how how he plays in a big moment, will he deliver?
I did? I actually saw great growth there, not just
end of game to tie up the game, but end
of first half, big boy drive, and what they were
able to do in overtime, what he does in the
biggest stage. That's when Brady seemed to have calm nerves

(01:23:47):
even though he should not have, but those parallels we're
mostly accurate. So there's an article out about the Cleveland
Browns and specifically the ownership it um of Jimmy Haslum
of the Browns and what's gone and Rye and there's
some interesting details as to why he didn't want to

(01:24:08):
draft Teddy Bridgewater Telly, why I agree with them? Next

I'm brought to by the good folks at Farmers who
had at the Farmer's Insurance Open. At Farmers, we've seen
almost everything, so we know how to cover almost anything.
When it's game time. Have an experienced player to help
you stay ahead of the game. Put their experience and
play at Farmers dot com. Are Farmers set Pan, You
are welcome for all of the tips. Yesterday we played
with ct PAN at the Dan Buyer and I did

(01:24:51):
at the Farmer's Insurance Open and we won. Um. We
won the pro am because we played the South we
finished one shot behind Jason Day's group. But they played
the north. We played the south. And how big a
difference is that? If you're listening to Fox Portrait, you
heard John Uh mean you heard Dan Buyer's update. Dan,

(01:25:13):
I'm guessing. I'm guessing that John Ram is playing the
north right, I mean he's he's he's ten owner, Like
it is a a massive difference. What about Justin Rose?
What about ct Pan? What? What? What are they all playing?
And then what's Tiger playing? And Tigers one under right?

(01:25:37):
But that that's the difference between the two, Like that
shows how how we we missed Birdie? I missed a
Birdie putt on eighteen in the shamble shamble by the
way as you can play, you you picked the drive
and then you play your own ball on the way
in um. But mr Mr Birdie putt, although I will
point out, I don't remember how he played on see
how ct played on a team. We could have used

(01:25:58):
his ball anyway or used his were not his ball,
So if he had a huh hm, what's funny is
or interesting is that ct Pan was he did not
have a good day. He was he was struggling off
the tea. He was not. I mean he he hit

(01:26:20):
he hit a ball twice a couple of times, and
he didn't he you know, he took a couple of
mulligans there. He was not feeling good about his game.
And now all of a sudden he's in fourth in
the clubhouse. No, he's not in the clubhouse. He's on
seventeen seventeen at seven under. I mean, that's you wanted
to have a crazy He's got a chance at a
at a sixty five or sixty four after yesterday. I

(01:26:41):
do not believe he was blow part yesterday on on
the South course. I'm you you saw this, so you
can account. This is the first time in my life
I can ever tell you that I actually felt like
I understood I left a couple puts short. Um, But
I also felt like I had a good sense for

(01:27:02):
the speed of the greens. Uh. And they were fast,
you know, like look there. It's I didn't feel like
they were as fast as I thought they would be.
Maybe it's because of all the rain that they got.
But um, I I stayed around and I worked with
ct On. You know, my me off the t in
the three Woods pretty dynamic. So that's why I showed him,
and then we worked on some of the some of
the putting stuff that I was, you know that that

(01:27:25):
I I knew he would want to learn. I don't
have a Scottie Cameron putter, but I'm basically am the
Scottie Cameron and putting. That's that's how I Sometimes sometimes
sometimes you hit one, you know, and if you you
know you're hitting an uphill and you think, well it's uphill,
I gotta, I gotta, I gotta crush this one and
you're just flying past the hole, or if you're going downhill,

(01:27:47):
that's uh. Anyway, it was great to play with CT
obviously play with you. And I'm not sure if you
guys are all aware, but you can check out Dan
Buyer's Wikipedia page, which has now been updated because we
were we were champions of the Farmers Insurance Open pro
Am that Yeah, well listen, we're gonna do what you

(01:28:14):
gotta do though, is you gotta take a picture of
that one and that that's stub and that should be
your avatar from this point forward. And we're actually gonna
put that on your tombstone. And we know you have
a good sixty years left remaining on this earth, but
in sixty years, that will be on your tombstone. Uh.
He's Dan Byron, Doug Gotlim, Doug Gotlim show here on
Fox Sport Tradio. So there's an article out, article out

(01:28:36):
about Uh, Jimmy Hasslim's not a reign of terror, but
his rain as the owner of the Cleveland Browns. And
I thought Eric Mangini put great. He said it's like
doing business in China. Right, tech takeles this Eric Mangini
for Brown's head coach. Now, it should be pointing out
that when he was the head coach of the Browns,
Jimmy Hasslan was not the owner. But but here's a

(01:28:58):
a perfect metaphor for what it's like from Jimmy Haslm,
who's successful in business with Flying Jay's coming in to
own an NFL team. Oftentimes owners have been really successful
in the industry that that they're in, but pro sports
is so different. The normal things that work don't necessarily

(01:29:20):
work in football. And sometimes as much as these guys
want to go in and fix problems and they want
things to happen right now, it doesn't always work that way.
And there's real value to continuity. They want you to
cook a turkey, but they want it in a microwave.
That's not how it works. And it's not how you
create an organization that's sustainable, that can compete for a

(01:29:40):
championship year and in year out. He's right. You know,
you have to understand that you're you're having things told
to you. You really really don't know. You really don't know.
You've gotta be smart even wise, take breath. Um, And
so you do feel a little bit bad for Jimmy
as them and and to anyone who says like a

(01:30:02):
owners should stay there hell out of the way. Hey, listen, man,
if you work your whole life and you make a
couple of billion dollars and you spend a couple of
hundred million dollars on a pro sports franchise, you mean
to tell me that you're not gonna be involved. Like,
let me, let me give you an example. Um music,

(01:30:25):
you're a volleyball player, you're a radio brucer. Let's let's
just say, let's just say you win the lottery, right,
or you win the power ball. I like the way
this is going. Doug. Okay, you in the power ball,
and now you're just this is amazing. You're like, you
know what I want to be. I want to I
want to reinvest. I want to own a pro sports

(01:30:46):
franchise Like, well, okay, but it's a baseball team, right,
you can own part of the Tampa Bay Race Like
all right, sure, I'm gonna throw in there. So you're
the majority owner of the race. You did you play baseball? Run?
I did? Okay? How long did you play baseball into?
Probably right up until high school? Before high school? Yeah, okay,

(01:31:09):
so right before high school. So you have a knowledge
of baseball, but not you're not a baseball genius. Right,
you didn't play in college? You know, you didn't play
in the minor leagues. You do? You know you haven't
been around. This is what you've done since you've been
out of college, and you're damn good at it. But
if you work your whole life, or even if you don't,
you have a bunch of money, you invest in something,
you mean to tell me you're not going to make
some You're not gonna go like, hey, I'm the owner,

(01:31:30):
why not? I want to draft this guy, I want
to play this way. I want to hire this coach.
Of course, you would this whole idea that these guys
are gonna turn over control to somebody else. Um is
kind of laughable when you think about it. You know,
he turned a family business into a multibillion dollar enterprise,

(01:31:50):
That's what he did. So of course he thinks, I
can fix the Browns. I fixed Flying j I can
fix the Browns. Why can't I? How hard could it be?
How hard could it be? Pretty hard? Pretty hard? But
there's one part that people are freaking out about there, like, hey,
Teddy Bridgewater's handshake turned him off. You combine that with

(01:32:16):
the fact that Johnny Manzel Um texted was dal Legans.
Who is there? Who is there? I think quarterback coach
at the time. So he texted the quarterback coach and
says like, hey, I want to play for him, the
quarterback coach. You know, forwards it to Jimmy Haslum, who
kind of always wanted to draft Johnny Manziel. And there's

(01:32:39):
something cool about Manzel and Manziel wanted to be there. Look,
part of this is and this is one of the
issues they can run into with Manzel, which is Manzel
is like the first guy to say like, hey, I
want to be here. Cleveland has this Um has this
pound puppy syndrome. You know, I pound puppies are the best, right,

(01:33:00):
I mean, they just anyone who will give them any
sort of love. They are so incredibly loyal to sometimes
even when the person who picks him out of the
pound is not a great owner, or you end up
you end up brushing off the pound puppy like, well,
the pound puppy still peas on the rug, Like, yeah,
but he's a pound puppy like he was in the

(01:33:20):
pound like five years ago. He's not that nice a dog.
He doesn't get along well with other dogs. He doesn't
like kids. He peas and poops in the rug. He
destroys his toys. You know, he's kind of overweight. He smells.
You give many kind of table scraps that he begs for.

(01:33:40):
He has ridiculous gas. Like, oh, you're like, but he's
a pound puppy. I mean he's part of our family.
We've had him forever. Like he's not a great dog.
That's kind of where That's kind of where the Browns
sometimes find themselves with their quarterbacks. They make excuses for him.
He's like, well, but he wants to be here. Everybody
says they want to be where they are. They just do.

(01:34:01):
Everyone says we have the world's greatest fans. Everyone says,
I don't want to be anywhere else. I'm never leaving, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
And it's hard to tell what's the truth and what's not.
It's hard to tell what pound puppy really is thoughtful
and and thankful to to have a home in which
one doesn't. But apparently one of the things that turn
him off a Tabor Bridgewater was his handshake. And I

(01:34:27):
get that I'm making a That's one of the things.
My kids went to a school last year where the
head of the school would come out every day and
shake hands and look him in the eye when you
drop off at school, and I loved it. It's one
of the things that that's like good parenting, like teach
your kid how to look some in the eye and
shake their hands. But I can also tell you that
some of us not just looking somebod in the eye.

(01:34:48):
Some of it is like you shake a dude's hand
that has a tiny little hand and they're a quarterback,
and you're just like, right, you never there's something to
these quarterbacks where the guys that seem to have it.
They just have it. They have a magnanimous way about them.

(01:35:12):
There's a leadership quality to him. And I know that
that that Teddy Bridgewater went on to lead the Minnesota
Vikings to the playoffs, and if they had any sort
of reasonable kicking game, they beat the Seattle Seahawks in
the playoffs. But let's also be honest, Teddy Bridgewater wasn't
the reason that they that they were going to beat
the Seahawks in the playoffs. They went to the He

(01:35:34):
was a game manager that was learning to be a
good quarterback. And he's he's better and a more solid
human being at that point in time in his life,
and even now than Johnny Man's out, and he might
he might be a starting quarterback next year, probably be
a backup, get a chance to win a starting job somewhere.
You can do a lot worse than Teddy Bridgewater. But
we were always told about Teddy Bridgewater was kind of quiet,

(01:35:56):
kind of slightly built. You know, he's okay, he might
get hurt, he might be you know, he's and when
Johnny Manzel comes into a room, he takes over a room.
By the way, all of these guys that are quarterbacks
when they come into a room, they take over a room. Wait,
next week, we're gonna be live at the super Bowl.
Everyone you will hear we've had Matt. We'll have Matt

(01:36:18):
Ryan on and would be like, man, Matt Ryan and
Doug best friends. Like no, but for that nine minutes
will be really dear friends. Jared Goff, same deal, Mitch Drabinsky,
same deal. Those dudes come in, You're like, are we
best friends? Are we gonna hang out in the off season?
And when you shake their hands, you're like, wow, I

(01:36:39):
just shook hands with Jared Goff, with Mitchell Drabinsky. And
and part of why you teach your kid to look
some in the eye, to extend their arm, to give
a good firm handshake is because people make, especially people
in power, they make judgments about people and their leader

(01:37:00):
ship skills based upon how they shake your hand. I
actually think that's the most reasonable part of his decision making.
It doesn't mean that it doesn't necessarily equate to being
a great quarterback, but there's a leadership potion to it.
There's something about it that does make total sense to me.
M hm um, alright, we we gotta there's a couple

(01:37:25):
of there's there's something we gotta stop doing as a
as I want to get my media members together, all
my media friends together, and I want to I want
to bound together and eliminate two words that are used
in concert with one another. We've gotta stop using him together.
I'll explain, because we've been burned again by this. That's

(01:37:46):
up coming next, But first, everyone knows untucked shirts. How
Untucket replaced that sloppy smock look of an untucked dress

untucked shirts fit perfectly no matter what your body type.
Taller guys, shorter guys, thinner guys, wide guys, long torso,

And oh, so I gotta challenged my my media friends

(01:39:57):
and we are you end up? You do it long enough,
you became you become friends with most people, right, most
people you're like, yeah, we're I don't know if we're boys,
but you become friendly with them. We need to stop
assuming that things are a done deal just because we
say they're a done deal. Right, No deal has ever
done until the ink is dry. And I mean I

(01:40:19):
could go back historically and point things out to you, like,
I can't tell you how many times I was told
Kevin loves gonna be a Laker. You know his girlfriends
from so Cal. He's always wanted to be a Laker.
He's going to be a Laker, Okay, but he's not
currently a Laker, right, I mean, he's just he's just

(01:40:41):
not And so um, I think it's it's fascinating when
people thinks things are a done deal. Many people thought
it was a done deal that Antonio Brown was no
longer going to be a Pittsburgh Steeler, and it's reasonable
to think that it's still reasonable, well to believe, reasonable

(01:41:02):
to believe that Antonio Brown we won't play for the
Steelers again, it's a reasonable belief. But the done deal,
the it's done. Steve Walford was gonna be the head
coach of of Indiana. Heck, how many people I'm doing
the Arizona USC game a year ago? When then, when

(01:41:23):
the story came out from ESPN dot com, Mark sli
Ball had you know that there's a tape that exists
where a hundred grand is discussed, and and and DeAndre
Ayden and oh, done deal. Sean Miller's gone. And I
remember sitting on TV going like, look if this is
true until we hear the tape, which apparently doesn't actually exist.

(01:41:50):
Until we hear the tape, it's not a done deal.
Sound done deal. And the Antonio Brown thing is the
perfect example. Marquise Pouncey is quoted saying, we're a band
of brothers. We've been together for a long time. You
can't tell me a great phone conversation or sit down,
can't get right things right. Juju Smith Schuster on if

(01:42:12):
Antonio Brown gets traded, he helps me out a lot,
not only myself, but he makes the team better. Obviously
I don't control that situation, but if I could, I
wouldn't like for that to happen. Well, again, these are
just quotes. These are just quotes. I also would point
out that Marquise Pouncey is saying a phone conversation could

(01:42:34):
means a phone conversation hasn't happened. Hasn't happened? You know?
And and you know Art Rooney. Here's Art Rooney, the
guy who told the Pittsburgh Post Gazette he go back
a week ago or a week and a half ago,

(01:42:55):
where you know, he said all options are on the table.
But he but he said it's hard to envision him
back in the Steeler's uniform, in any stealer's uniform. Now
there's a new quote. A lot of factors we have
taken to account. We have to sit down with Antonio
and understand where he is and make sure he understands
where we are. There's some work to do before we
figure that out. Can I translate things for you? Look,

(01:43:20):
that contract is an absolute team killer. And and just
just so you're aware, if you're Antonio, if I'm a Steeler,
I'm a young Steeler right now From Juju Smith Sustro.
I'm kind of ticked because that contract was Steeler for
life kind of contract. Yeah, it hurts us a salary cap,
but it canna be stealing for life. He's Antonio Brown's
fine now from the Steelers, I've already you know, I've

(01:43:44):
already been I'm snake bit by this thing. No chance,
I'm not signing any guy to that kind of guaranteed
deal that hurts us that much in the cap, No way,
no way. My guess is though that Art Rooney sat
down with you know, their their cap guys were like,
all right, guys, let's fix this thing out. Let's fix

(01:44:04):
let's let's fix Ben's contract and let's get some money.
And they're just like, dude, there's we can't do this.
This is just and this is like being on n
C a probation. It's gonna hurt us that much. Twenty
one million dollars against the cap is major, major money.
It just is you know, you know what this reminds

(01:44:25):
me of. This reminds me of of tax cuts. You know,
everybody wants to pay less in taxes. Who doesn't raise
your hand, But at some point, some budgets gotta get cut,
all right, some budgets gotta get cut. You got to
figure out a way to do it. You're gonna swallow hard,
and you're like, where do we can we cut education?
Do we cut security? Do we cut you know, do

(01:44:48):
we cut something from our infrastructure? Like, something's gotta get
cut really hard. And so then you sit there and
go like every person, people who you know, senators and
House represented people are like, man, I really need to
cut taxes. I need to help my constituents out. But
if I cut taxes, then we cut funding for the schools,

(01:45:08):
and I'm gonna get you know, I'll get replaced. Nobody
wants that knick cut. Police officers and fire and first
responders can't cut that, So we'll just keep keep on.
And you'd be like, well, then you didn't cut taxes.
The wait, it's a little bit harder. Do the Steelers
want to get Rivettony Brown? Yes, they like him going yesterday,
He still obviously hasn't explained himself or apologized for no

(01:45:33):
showing the week of the last week of the season
when they needed him most. Marquis pounces like, we're Banner brothers.
A phone call could that means a phone call has
not come in and juju, he's just trying to be
then he's just trying to say the right thing. On
the other hand, I think the reason he hasn't been
moved yet and they have until what early March, you know,

(01:45:56):
when he gets a roster bonus to be still on
the roster. They're not gonna give them that if they
don't have to. They don't, they don't want to. But
it's pretty obvious that they've looked around and go like,
there aren't a lot of good offers. It's a huge contract,
he's thirty years old, and if we trade him, we
still get penalized in our cap. Like there's a reality too,

(01:46:16):
maybe we're better off keeping him and trying to fix
this thing. And then the other problem is this, and
this is an important thing for players and for coaches.
I'd say this all the time, Like we talk about
college coaches often they're like, why does he have a
low buyout or why does the guy get a new

(01:46:37):
contract when they make like they'll get some crazy money
in a buyout. They do so that you can't fire them.
And one of the reasons that that Antonio Brown got
this in his contract to so you can't not just
can't cut him, we can't trade him because it it
penalizes you, but it will hurt other players in the future.

(01:46:58):
Mark that down. Let's check in Dan Buyer find out
what a bunch of news. In the NFL, Panthers quarterback
Cam Newton under an authors copic surgery at his right shoulder.
The team made the announcement today, but it's the MMQB
dot com who was reporting that the procedure was relatively
minor and that the team believes Newton will be available
for O t A. S John Harball is going to

(01:47:19):
be available to coach the Ravens for the next four years.
That's because he got a four year extension from the
team today. In the NBA, tons of injury news. Let's
start out in Brooklyn. Are good friend Karen Butler with
the breaking news is the former NBA or says guard
Spencer Dinwoo, He's gonna miss four to six weeks with
a hand injury. Rockets point guard Chris Paul questionable to
return from his hand string injury tomore not against the Raptors.

(01:47:41):
That's recording the ESPN. Paul has been out for five
weeks because of the injury. Lebron James has missed a month.
He's not gonna go tonight against the Timberwolves because of
his growing injury, but Rajon Rondo is a game time decision.
He took part and shoot around trying to return from
finger surgery. The big news of the day Pacers guard
Victor Oladipo done for the season with a ruptured quad

(01:48:02):
tendon suffered in last night's game against the Raptors and Sons.
Card Devin Booker find twenty five grand for escalating escalating
the on court confrontation he had with t Wolf center

ct Pan just two shots back at minus eight after

(01:48:24):

We're right now. He's on the South course playing the
fourteenth hole. He has two under par through thirteen holes
of play and eight back of John Rom. Jordan's speed

more technology, so there's sort of a sale safe hatch
when this happens again. But beyond that, just make the
right call. I mean, this is ridiculous that the referee

(01:49:48):
was five ft away. It happened right in front of him.
We just is not a technological issue. This is a
bad referee issue. That was so stunning to me that
no one in the field saw this and said this
as be rectified right now. We all saw it. Everybody
in the stadium saw it. And so you know, the
report now is that you know, obviously these guys were
rested in the game because they were the highest graded

(01:50:09):
officials in the NFL. Well, if these guys are the
good ones, imagine how bad you know they're bad ones are.
And so I think it's two fold. I think you
need kind of safety hatches so that you can make
a play like that reviewable. But on the other hand,
it's just I don't know how they do it. Maybe
they go to all full time officials, maybe they just
you know, have have more sort of study time and

(01:50:31):
the outs or whatever it is. But the officials have
to get better because this was unacceptable. Yeah, look, it was.
It was a blown call. I do think some of
it is sports right there. You're not gonna you You're
not gonna get a perfectly officiative game. But that's one
that that leaves a bad taste in your mouth, matter
who you are. It was. It was a call that
you felt like, man, that's called past interference. I also think, like,

(01:50:52):
what's crazy about it? Breeze on first down throws throws
the groundball and that pass was thrown on the inside.
We should have been outside and could have could have
been taken too. They could have been intercepted if not
taken to the house. Like somehow Breeze has escaped any
sort of responsibility for a couple of errand throws because
it was such a bad call. Yeah. I mean, also

(01:51:13):
you have the golf face masks from the drive before.
I mean, this was the referees really took over the game.
They were the focus of the game. I mean, it was.
It was really amazing. I agree with you. I mean
even even the fact that they were passing. You know,
Sean Payton said after the game, I was in the
press conference that that pass was originally a run that
got checked into a past because of the blitz, and
so I mean, I I don't know if it was

(01:51:35):
even smart to even maybe check out of it, because
you still want to join the clock, you want to
take try to take forty seconds or whatever it is
off the clock, because you can even even on a
third or fourth found. So I think that there's any
number of scenarios in which the Saints could have won
that game, even if but obviously the overtime, even if
that call was a no call. How do you how

(01:51:57):
do you put into context with the Patriots were able
to do in Kansas City? I mean, it was incredible.
It was to go on the road. The biggest tests
I think was them going on the road at some
point because it's been essentially four years since that, you know,
since they went into uh they went an Arrowhead and
lost that game three and a half years, and you

(01:52:19):
start to look at how much of an advantage Fox
Borrow was, and I think everyone sort of asked the question,
how would they do it on the road, and their
ability to at least contain Patrick Mahomes make him look human. Uh,
it was. It was really impressive. I mean, their ability
what they're doing now with the offense and they're basically
I mean, they played James Devlin. I saw this as

(01:52:41):
they played Jake's Devlin for more snaps than any pullback
combined for like the past six championship games or something
like that. I mean they're they're basically playing old school
football in the most new school environment. Okay, I mean
we're an unprecedented era of football innovation and they're going
to run James White and James Devlin down in the throat.

(01:53:03):
I mean, it's really incredible what Belichick is able to
do as far as adaptability and to go into Arrowhead
and win that game. I thought I've already thought the
world of the Patriots, and now sudden I was the
more oppressed. Yeah, they zig when other people zag, right, mean,
look at their defense, where everyone else has invested in

(01:53:23):
in you know, end pass, you know pass rushers just
speed off the end. And look at the edge pass
rushers that the Chargers have. I mean, they're better than
anybody on that roster. And you know, I don't think
most people could could name the Patriots edge rushers if
they they were handed a card and given a line
of pick out who this guy is? Kyle van Oy,

(01:53:43):
Like who knew who that guy was? Um? And and
then and then offensively when everybody else is doing what
the Patriots used to do, which is spread you out
and throw it instead of running. They're lining up in
the first half and just mashing you because you're so
used to defending how the other spread out style, right,
I mean the past first point is a great point.

(01:54:05):
And here's why. Because everyone looks at these sort of
hard and fast rules and every other team lives by
and one of those is we've got to have that
that elite pass watcher. The Patriots literally had me young
pass watcher under contract a couple of years ago, and
Chandler Jones they trade him the Arizona because you're gonna
get too expensive, okay, and then they just keep marching on.

(01:54:29):
I think Channel Jones led the NFL and Jack two
years ago. And it doesn't matter for them because they
understand that the money they're saving by not giving a
mega contract to Chandeler Jones is going to be used
on three or four of the position groups. They are
so good at knowing exactly what they need to have
from one to forty six man roster. I mean, like
from they they have forty six guys active on game

(01:54:50):
day and all forty six collectively are always better than
the other guys forty six because they understand how to
build a deep roster. Yeah. No, it's it's it's it's
it's absolutely amazing, uh to watch. Um, do you think
something's wrong with Todd Gurley? I think something he's wrong
with the running back position because because I mean, first

(01:55:12):
of all, the Ram's up into line is a little
too good for Todd Gurley, because you know C. J.
Anderson comes in and has all that success and now
now Todd Roy looks looks human. Um, I think he's
probably banged up after a long season because I think
such a nature of a running back position. I do
think you cannot be a hundred percent because we're not
seeing that same explosion. But I also think that you know,
just schematically, he comes in, he makes those mistakes story

(01:55:34):
in the game, and Sean mcny said that the flow
of the game got away from him. And I think
that when you don't have that same explosion, you are
susceptible to being bench I think that this is right October,
and Todd Joy looks like a superhero. You're not going
to bench him even after he has a tipped pass
away to interception. That kind of thing still got them
show here on Fox Sports and his voice of Kevin Clark,
who of course rights for The Ringer. I need to

(01:55:57):
watch Slow Slow Newsday, which you can check out on
on on The Ringer's website. I know he did one
with my boy Royan Rissilo, which I was I was
dying and watching. Um, your latest one is you have
the NFL Draft Guide and everyone's talking about Kyler Murray
and you know, some people like will John Gruden is
going to do it. And look, I understand the smaller quarterback,

(01:56:22):
you know, Baker Mayfield and and Drew Brees, but didn't
Drew Brees just have a pass deflected that that led
to them losing a game. And and he's substantially smaller,
substantially smaller, and he's a little guy. And yes he's
crazy athletic, but haven't we learned that. You know Tom Brady,
who's who's a non athlete back there can play nineteen

(01:56:43):
successful years. What do you think is gonna happen with
Kyler Murray? I think he's going to be good, and
I think he needs the right system, and I think
that he needs a innovative coach almost like what we saw. Obviously,
I think it's a lazy comparison to say, here's the
Oklahoma quarterback and there's another Oklahoma quarterback. But you you
learned the lessons of Baker Mayfield, and Baker Mayfield looked,

(01:57:04):
you know, pretty mortal and pretty average when he was
under Hugh Jackson. Because Hugh Jackson wasn't thinking about how
to use Baker Mayfield. Tredde Kittens comes in his office
coordinator A on a sudden, Baker Mayfield looks like a
future All Pro guy, and so I think that he
has the tools to be successful. I think that you're
right in that size does matter, but if you can
sort of figure out a way to use the height.

(01:57:27):
I mean, Drew Brees climbed the pocket as well as
anybody in football. Um Russell Wilson is the same way.
I think you need there are way to negate the heights,
and I think Kyler Mury can do that. But if
he goes to a system where they don't teach him anything,
they don't think about how to use them, he could
be a bust. Because that is every single quarterback now
because the smart coaches and the dumb coaches. There is

(01:57:48):
a bigger golf than ever, and if Kyler Maury goes
to one of those dumb coaches it's going to be
a problem for him until somebody figures it out. Now,
I think that's I think that's fair. Everybody's looking for
the new young uh, you know, genius coach, and obviously
that's why that's that's what they're all searching for. I'm
sure you read that article by Seth Seth Wick or
Shammy's talented writer. We all read everybody's good work. What's

(01:58:09):
your takeaway from the Brown's article of the Jimmy Hasslum era.
Uh And and when you read that this morning at
ESPN dot com, I thought it was an amazing column piece.
And it comes back there. I kept thinking whenever people
kept saying, well, the Browns have the best open job
in the NFL, and I kept saying, well, why is that?
I mean, haven't they gone through a million GMS, million

(01:58:30):
coaches since Jimmy Haslum took over the team. And I
just think that what it makes me think more of
Baker Mayfield and what he was able to do to
rise above that's where the dysfunction. I really like John Dorsey,
I don't know if Freddy Kitchens enough to make a
potch one way or another. Um. Actually just saw him
at the Senior Bowl the other day, but I didn't
get get a good read on him. Um. But I

(01:58:51):
think they've got the pieces into has stability. I think
that I still worry a little bit, you know, steps
with the line Jimmy hasm wants to be a football guy. Listen,
Jerry Jones, I think has has somewhat succeeded in being
a football guy. But if you asked Robert Craft or
Jonathan Crafter or any of the smartest owners, if there
are a football guys, they're going to say no. They
go into that room with Selicheck or or whoever the coaches.

(01:59:14):
If you're a smarter owner of the Roneys, they just
asked questions and make sure every you know, every the
infrastructures in place, all that stuff. But they're not trying
to scout the left guard here. And that's what worries
what the Browns going forward is if Jimmy has them
still leaves the football guy, that could be a real
problem down the Locke. Yeah. Yeah. My fear with Mayfield though,
is that And the reason I don't think it was

(01:59:36):
that good a job was because look, Dorsey drafted Mayfield,
and Dorsey has control, and everybody thinks he's done a
decent job of stabilizing it. And Baker came in and
and look, I think Baker was good against bad teams
and was average at best against good teams. But it's
only rookie. I think he becomes too powerful because Cleveland

(01:59:57):
needs somebody to kind of say I want to be
here and is good enough to do it, and he is.
But if something goes wrong, the coach is going to
be the one to fall, not Dorsey and not Baker Mayfield.
They're not getting rid of Baker Mayfield. They're not getting
rided down Dorsey, and they're not getting rid of their owner.
And so I think that's the reason that you couldn't
get an outsider to come in and take that job.
Is that a fair assumption assumption? I don't know. I mean,

(02:00:18):
I don't know how hard they pursued an outside Listen.
I think the Lincoln Wiley extension that was signed before
the coaching carousel started was the biggest factor of the
entire month, because I think then you could give him
the Godfather offer and try to figure something out with him.
But once Lincoln Riley was off the table, I think
they understood that maybe you stick with the guy who

(02:00:40):
who unlocked Baker Manafield. But on the other hand, Doug,
I'm hesitant to say that Freddie Catches is uniquely qualified.
Maybe it was just the you know, the lack of
Hugh Jackson and hot Todd Haley was what made Baker
Mayfield Baker Mayfield in the last half of the season.
Maybe there's a hundred guys who could have done that
that that's my sort of stopped process. Pretty Kitchens, I think.

(02:01:02):
I I'm hugely impressed what he did, but it's possible
it couldn't be. Sort of hum and actually obviously on
McVeigh too. McVeigh is an incredible coach, but part of
his success is the fact he followed up Jeff Fisher.
I mean, I think that who you followed, ye, who
you follows you, who you follow us year and so
it's it's I agree, And I don't know how the

(02:01:23):
head coaching thing is gonna go in Cleveland. I have
my slight concerns, but I'm excited to see Baker just
in another year of this office. Kevin Clark. Check out
his stuff on the ring or follow him on Twitter.
They do great stuff. Hopefully we'll bump into each other
super Bowl. Kevin, thanks so much for joining us. Thanks Doug,
and pleasure is all mind. Kevin Clark joining us on

(02:01:44):

thing or two. We are farmers. Under Written my farmer's truck,

(02:02:05):
fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every state.

liz price, an invoice price. True Car shows what other
people paid for the car you want. You can recognize
a good price when you're ready to buy a new
or used car. Visit True Car and enjoy more confident
car buying experience. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Let's
get to the press, the press, all right, buye, I

(02:02:30):
need have been on the back end. What do you got, Well,
we've got this Farmer's Insurance. Open your leader right now,
John Rametz and under Justin Rose. Just a shot back
Sea Teep and two shots back in mind at Saints
and one tire Woods at two under part through fourteen.
You're bearing the lead. Most important thing. We won the
two thousand nineteen Farmers Insurance pro Am because we played

(02:02:51):
the South Course and we only finished a shot back
of of Jason Days. Cason Day's group to play the
North course. Deal with it. Soun's guard Devin er find
five grand for escalating his on cooard confrontation with Timberwolve
Center goegy Jeng when both wanted to fight each other
in the hallways. You see that, Yeah, I did, I
did see. I did see that. Although I love Georgy Jang.

(02:03:13):
Afterwards he's like, no, I just want to exchange jerseys.
That was amazing. I'm a fun guy fan. Suted reports
running back Levyan Bell would like to play for the
Miami Dolphins. Yeah, if he becomes a free agent. Would
be because he lives in because he likes hanging out
down there and jet skiing down there, like okay, Um,

(02:03:33):
Ravens gave head coach John Harby four year contract extension. Thanks,
thank you to that defense. And I guess Lamar Jackson
for shrinking the game offensively and also to the schedule
for opening up playing bad teams. And we'll finish with this.
I'm picking Candy. That's why I'm trying to figure out
of what great stories we have. How about this one?
Greg's urline of the Rams in a walking boots Dun

(02:03:56):
Dun done his plant foot a little sore, so they
put it in a walk Boody's not practicing. Should be
available for Super Bowl. Greg the leg, but it's not
that leg that's hurting. And then one final one, Dodgers
putting single game tickets on sale tomorrow. But you can't
buy the Yankees game. If you want to see the
Yankees and Dodgers at Dodger Stadium, you gotta buy it
in a multi game package. Old that's that's old school

(02:04:19):
Clippers stuff, right. You gotta buy the multi pack even
for the Dodger to draw for four million people a year.
And that's the press bag it out there and pressed
that the press Um okay, straighta Vegas is up next,
then The Odd Couple, and Rob Parker continues to to
defend himself and his take that America should be cheering
for Tom Brady. Listen, I like Rob a lot. He's

(02:04:42):
actually a really, really good dude. And he made a
strong take that was strong and wrong. And the way
it works in sports is you gotta learn to lose
if you're gonna gloat when you win. And my advice
to Rob is to take the l on this one. However,
Tom Brady looked it doesn't matter. One he won, two, third,

(02:05:04):
and ten three different times in the final game winning drive.
And three he's forty one years old. This is the
ninth time he's gotten there. I just I like Rob
Parker a great deal. He's that crazy uncle that's unafraid
of saying anything that's on his mind. But in sports,
when you make bombastic statements as cool, I just gotta

(02:05:25):
be willing to take the ol when you're wrong. That's
the way it works. I'll be on the Herd tomorrow
and on the Call of USC Arizona in three hours
on Fox Sports One. Stuck out the show
