(00:28):
Fox Sports Radio Coming to you from the beautiful, sunny,
a little bit crisp city of Angels where, man, I'll
tell you the end of day's rains have ended. And
if you've ever been to southern California after it's rained
in the winter and you look out and you see
(00:49):
the San Gabriel Mountains with snow all over them, You're like, wow,
that is really really pretty. It is a beautiful day
in Los Angeles. Uh. Just about the only thing going
for l A right now is how beautiful it is outside.
What's your favorite acronym? Is your favorite acronym? Not Safe
(01:10):
for work? Right and s f W. That's a very
popular one. Whiskey tango foxtrot right W t F that
that one is a great Acronymen Um, there's all time
famous acronyms like NASA. NASA is a great acronym. But
(01:31):
we like to use acronyms to describe things in ways,
you know, like are you kidding me right now? A?
I like to do a why f okay right right now? Anyway? Um,
the Lakers and Pelicans, by my estimation, can both be
(01:56):
clumped under one acronym that is foo bar. Are you
guys familiar with foot bar? I can. I'm not allowed,
based upon my job and being over the air, to
describe what that means. But you do know what that
acornym stands for? Good? Good. The point is that everyone
(02:19):
is to blame for what is a Titanic like disaster
in Los Angeles. The visual is so real, so rife.
It's embarrassing to a guy who calls himself the king
(02:41):
and apparently no one wants to live in his kingdom?
Did you see or hear about what happened last night?
It was that was amazing theater. Let me help describe
it to you. Okay, I'm sitting there. Last night, I
got a chance to call uh like to basketball games
in two days. It's so much fun. That's I love
(03:02):
my job. I've gotten called NFL games. This year's sideline
for an NFL game on Fox. I love college college
basketball stuff. I'll be throwing in for cowherds. I just
like doing stuff. So two nights ago, Penn State Northwestern
on Fox Sports. One last night, Kansas Kansas State Sunflower
State Showdown after co hosting The Dan Patrick Show in Manhattan, Kansas.
(03:23):
And I'm sitting there in my hotel room catching a
quick nap before going over to Brambledge College Seum, also
known as the Octagon of Doom. And it looked down
and I say to myself, Huh, the Lakers are two
and a half point dogs. Just after they say they've
pulled out of the Anthony Davis sweepstakes. My thought would be, well,
(03:43):
that's a calvinizing moment, right, Lebron walks in the locker
room and goes, hey, we're all in this together. Let's
go make a run. You know, almost like um, almost
like the manager in Major League Right, there's only one
thing left to do when the whole bleeping thing right,
You almost felt like that's what's gonna happen. Um. They
(04:05):
were two two and a half point favorites playing against
the Indiana Pacers. If you need an update on the
Indiana Pacers, you're like, oh, they got Victor Oladipo. No,
Victor Aldipo's out for the year and his recovery could
take up to a year and a half because he
tour that that the tendon above his patella. It's a
(04:27):
nasty injury. They're starting lineup was Tyree Givins, Darren Collinson,
Miles Turner, Bogdan Bogdanovitch, and Thaddeus Young off the bench,
Domas Sabonis, rookie Aaron holiday Um. They even throw in
their Corey Joseph McCory Joseph Texas Spurs. They they got
(04:50):
Corey Joseph also formerly of the Toronto Raptors. It's not
like they were throwing out there. All Star after All
Star after All Star. Rick Smith's smull and Reggie Miller,
Mark Jackson not walking through that door like we had
all Lebron's back, Kusma's back totally healthy, Rondo's healthy. They
(05:11):
got Zobach that's a rap um. Then they gave up
sixty nine points in the first half. Only the top
that by giving up sixty seven points in the second
half and normally look, you're gonna get a full house
anytime Lebron comes to town, especially in Indie, a place
where he has ended uh ended playoff series time and
(05:34):
again over the past five six years, going back to
his days with the Miami Heat, and credit the Pacers
fans for verbally trolling Brandon Ingram and JaVale McGee. How
great was that? It was like college all over again.
Lebron's gonna trade you. Lebron's gonna trade you, right, they
(05:56):
said that to brandon Ingram, Like that's funny. You would
think if it was a cohesive unit, if it was
Lebron James and all of his guys and they're all in, well,
they'd be great. The Patients won six to nine, and
then there's the visuo of Lebron on the bench, three
chairs between Lebron and the rest of the team. When
(06:20):
Luke Walton calls time out, he did not move. Lebron's
in pout mode. The team is done with the current
group of guys. You'd be done with him too, as
is Luke Walton. And I don't blame them. They're piste
and rightfully so, because everything that Lebron James has said
(06:42):
and tried to act upon while being a Laker must
app must be an abject must be a lie, has
to be because the rumors came out about Lebron wanting
a new coach, and then of course this trade has
gone astray in which they want Anthony Davis because Lebron
(07:05):
wants Anthony Davis if Rich Paul wants him, and he's
Rich Paul's client, and they're willing to offer up how Kuzma,
a Lonzo Ball, brandon Ingram and a couple of first
round picks, and Land Stevenson and Michael Beasy like, look,
I don't care what you tell me face to face
(07:27):
for six months. If I find out that you you
don't value me enough to want me and said you
want to throw all of us in the whole kitchen
sink trade, I'll be pissed too. I don't blame those
guys for saying, F that guy. That's what they said
last night. They were chanting there basically without saying word.
(07:48):
They were saying, f you, Lebron, and he's to blame,
and so is Rich Paul, who's tried to engineer manufacture
this thing. Engineer It did Anthony Davis dad to say
that the Boston Celtics are disloyal. Put rumors out there
that Lebron James tell Chris Brussory Lebron James could play
(08:08):
if it was a plas, why isn't he playoff playing?
Put it out there that Lebron would prefer to have
a different coach. And then Magic Johnson can't keep a secret,
that's why he's gotten fined for tampering before. And it
leaks out there that they're willing to give up everything
and anything. Just again, Anthony Davis, what's amazing about it
(08:30):
is as bad a look at as it is for
the Lakers, it's frankly equally bad right now for Del
Dems unless he picks up the phone and decided to
make a deal, because consider this Dell demps is trade
turning down a herschel Walker trade. That's what it is, Hey,
herschel Walker trade. You're gonna give us three really good
(08:53):
young players. And you can tell me that you don't
think Lonzo Ball will live up to his billing or
that his dad makes him un tradable or unacquirable. You
can tell me that you don't think Brandon Ingram is
nearly the Kevin Durant clone. You thought he was gonna
be and that's fair. You could sit there and tell
me that Kyle Kuzma all he does is score. Last
(09:14):
time I checked, they do award championships two teams that
score more points than others. All three of them may
not be All Stars. None of them might be All Stars.
But if you if you like their evaluations at all,
or if whatever you think of the Lakers, they were
a damn good team before they were just besieged by injuries.
(09:37):
They were in the fourth spot, and they were two
games out of the number one spot in the West.
And then Lebron got hurt, and Kuzma got hurt, and
Rondo got hurt, and a Lonzo got hurt. They all
got hurt. I mean, think about it. They actually like
Kyle Kuzma and like Lonzo Ball. They didn't like D'Angelo Russell,
and damn he's become an All Star. Think about it.
(10:00):
Del Dems is resting his hopes on a trade for
with the Boston Celtics. The Boston Celtics general manager is
Danny Ainge, who not only has built a champion by
acquiring a big three back when he got Kevin Garnett
to join Paul Pierce and Ray Allen. But then he
(10:23):
began the process of gutting the team and redoing it,
pulling off trades like this one. He traded Kevin Garnett,
Paul Pierce, Jason Terry for Gerald Wallace, Marshawn Brooks, Chris Humphreys,
Keith Bogan's Chris Joseph and a two thousand, fourteen, sixteen
and eighteen first round pick. And if you remember, the
Nets were awful, that's how they got all these players.
It's one of the greatest traits in the history of
(10:43):
professional sports. Oh yeah, and Isaiah Thomas, who had his
best season of his career with the Celtics plain for
Brad Stevens. He traded for Isaiah Thomas with a two thousand,
sixteen first round pick, and Marcus Thornton is no longer
in the league. Then he turned around and when Isaiah
Thomas had a bad hip and want a new contract,
(11:04):
he moved him Jake crowder, uh Anti Zizitch and Brooklyn
the Brooklyn Nets first round picked that last one that
he acquired, and he got Kyrie Irving. Those are three
of the best trades in the history of the sport.
And Del Dems bull takes a long time Celtic Celtic
gm at his word that hey, maybe Jayson Tatn'll be
(11:27):
out there this summer. The only thing dumber than Magic
Johnson not being able to either pull off the move
or keep it quiet so that the Natives aren't restless
is the fact that Del Dems didn't okay the move.
It's equal parts idiocy across the board. The Lakers look
(11:50):
like the Titanic and the Pelicans look like a guy
who's standing in front of the sharks at Shark Tank
with a massive overvaluation of the of the that they
have Mark Cubans sitting there laughing. And because of that,
I'm out. I blame Lebron mostly. I brain Rich Paul
(12:17):
because those two are tied at the hip and he
has tried to strong arm the league into this happening.
I brain Magic Johnson because he allowed these two to
make decisions and to feel like they were empowered and
then to ruin his negotiation. And I frankly blame him
for not keeping everything quiet and not knowing could I
(12:38):
get the deal done or not get the deal done?
And frankly I blame Del Dems. You had a kitchen
sink offer and you turned it down because you might
have an equal or slightly better offer, but you might not.
What if the Celtics win the championship, or what if
Jason Tatum isn't as good as you thought, or what
(12:59):
if Kyrie Irving goes to the New York Knicks and
suddenly Anthony Davis refuses to play for the Celtics, And
if he doesn't want to play long term for the Celtics,
he could refuse to sign a long term deal, which
hurts his value in the Celtics. That sit there and
go like, look, we would have we would have traded
Jason Tatum if we knew we were gonna have Kyrie Irving.
But if we don't have Kyrie Irving, he's not gonna
(13:20):
want to stay, and so we don't want to trade
for him. Get a home run package. I cannot believe
how bad both of these sides are. And then watching
Lebron James, who is a historically great player, ruin all
of his relationships in one week with his team is
(13:44):
nothing shorter for Markable. I've never seen it before, ever, ever, ever, ever.

and he's been unbelievable. He's gonna join the show next.
Been all over the story. How close was it to happening?
How dead is it? And is there any way too?
If they can't pull off a trade in the next
(14:29):
twenty four hours, is there any way to fix this
relationship between Walton and Rich Paul and Lebron and maybe
more importantly, the rest of the team and Rich Paul
and Lebron? Three chairs in between le Bron and the
rest of the team. A man on an island. He
wanted the franchise to himself. He got it last night.

Sports Radio. I landed at l a X about an
hour and a half ago. This guy just landed at
(16:40):
l a X like fifteen minutes ago. His name is
Brad Terry, works at the l A Times. He's been
killing it on the Lebron Beat, and he was I
Believe in Indie last night for what can only be
termed a an absolute abject disaster of a performance. Hours
after it leaked that the Lakers had said, hey, We're
(17:01):
not gonna bet against ourselves anymore. You're interested. Collins. Back
to New Orleans Pelicans, Um, what was it? What was
it like to actually experience that sort of beating and
that sort of strife with this team? Well, in fact,
it was horrible. There was whole rist basketball to watch
(17:21):
if you were a Laker fan or a basketball fan.
At least though they would be competitive, the Lakers would
not competitive. Even from the jump ball you could see
that finding language was not good. Spirit was down, it
was dollar and the young guys really have let the
(17:43):
trains off weigh them down. And the veterans other than
who had a good credit he played on. He played
if he was trying to prove a point that he
was over his frustrations that he had with Bo walking
from the game on Saturday night at Gold of Space.
But it was an that was one of the worst
(18:05):
I've seen in my idea of covering the Lakers because
of what's all going over around there. All right, hold
on real quick, Brad, I mean listen up. Here's here's
the deal I'll make with you. If you pick up
your phone, Uh, we will pay the ticket if you
get pulled over, right, we will pay the ticket if
you get pulled over for holding on your phone and
you're nothing wrong with your bluetooth, but there's not a
lot right with your bluetooth. Right now, he's Brad Turner's
(18:27):
joining us from the l A times as he's he's
driving home and he's driving maybe to work and trying
to trying to put together what what's what? Um, he's gonna,
We're gonna kind of work on that one. Yeah, it was.
I mean, there's no other way to describe. Remember an
he doesn't have Victory Oladipo, they don't have their only
all star and they completely whooped him. Um, what do
(18:50):
you meant? What can be made of Lebron on the bench,
three chairs between himself and the rest of the team,
not getting up during time outs late? You know, this
is our first time being around Lebron. So it just
reminds me of what I saw when I watched him
play from my father watched the TV games, and you
(19:11):
always hear the stories about him made passive aggressive, and
that's what I thought it was. Again, where the media
sits in Indiana, was sitting pretty high up, so you
can see that he's sitting not next to his teammates.
But you really can't tell that for where he is.
Did you see he's not involved in the timehouse, but
most of us had a hands fund in our computers
(19:33):
trying to write out stories and the Yeah that I thought.
But past games, when you talk to Lebron, he was open.
He was a typical free self, talking about the trade,
how he could boy the guys and how it could
affect young guys. Talked about social media, you know how
guys read that, especially the young millennial players of the NBA,
(19:54):
how they are always on social media trying to find
out what's going on, and if you own it all
the time, nimes, and maybe it effect your play. But
he hadn't changed much of the locker room. But then, yeah,
there was that distance he separated himself from the other guys.
This is but this is what he does, is what
he does, okay, And then and then they not taking
(20:14):
ownership of it, right because everyone knows none of these
deals would be made or you know, unless he said
it was okay. He says like, no, you can't trade Kuzma.
And so no matter how much, no matter what he
says to those guys and says like, hey, don't worry
You're still my guy. They're not idiots. They're like, I'm
still your guy. Why are you willing to send me
and everybody else to go trade for Anthony Davis? Well,
(20:36):
like that sounds good, but the deals they made by
Mendie Jonathan Robelmina over the guys that wanted to give him. Sure,
Brian didn't wants him on the team as well, that
he made that clear. But he cannot call the GM
ing water and do the deal as agent and probably
(20:56):
called the trying to deal. But when the deal Sonic
got started, the two sides talk, it was only it
was only Magic Johnson. No one else knew they were talking.
Even the agency did that though they were talking. So
I get the part we all want to say. It's
all the Vin James. So I think he's still evold
on this. Yes, I do, if you make it a
phone calls. No, he's not because he cannot do they
(21:23):
they Brad Turner joining us to me l a times Brad, Um, Look,
there's still twenty four hours, twenty four hours you know
for Dell Demps to pick up the phone. Um. I
look at that deal and I'm like, you're crazy. If
you turn it down. That is a home run. You know,
two first round, two first round picks, you know, three
three quality young players and then some expiring contracts as
(21:44):
well with Land Stevenson and Michael Beasley. If that's what
it is, and I'm sure there's room to negotiate, but
the Lakers like, look, we're done throwing things in there. Um.
What's the feeling around the Lakers as to whether or
not Dell demps to pick up the phone. Well, they're
not going to call the warners again. If theill dims
caused them before the deadline expires tomorrow what the noon
(22:04):
our time on the West Coast, then they're willing to talk.
The Lakers have already amazing changes. They're taking Deeply out,
they're taking Lands out, they're taking Rondo out, and they
put in Josh Hart and KCP and Zubos and they've
been willing to take back side and Heroes contract. So
those are things that have been discussed. But once it
(22:25):
increased from two first round picks, the four first wrong
picks and at least two second round picks, the Lakers
politely said, thank you very much sealing them. We enjoyed
the conversation to Luck in the future. We're moving on
because we cannot do a deal that speaks because they
felt it was outrageous to have all that thrown in
(22:46):
after they've already giving up a lot just to try
to get the young man who was a great player.
But it's just too much, too alright, So let's say
it doesn't happen. How can they get how can they
fix how can they fix the chasm? Because like, look,
bloke's not happy. It's not just the Beasley and and
Jabail thing. It's like, he's not an idiot. He knows
where those stories come from that Lebron might want a
(23:07):
new one, might want a new coach um. So there's
there's a chasm between he and Lebron. There's Lebron and
the rest of his teammates, and there's the fact that
the team is not playing particularly well one because they
haven't had all their they haven't had all other guys.
It still don't have Alonzo ball. Can this thing be
salvaged if they don't pull off the trade? I say yes,
(23:29):
And if I want to be salvate to his full potential.
If Magic Johnson golds on, it costs the team the
other one and explains to them what the Britness is
all about and why they still months played basketball and
they have to let all the sales. They can't worry
about being traded. Maybe don't you become nan now? And
(23:52):
he also has that Lebron James though that you're the leader,
you have to become boring Gates all the time, and
not to single him out, but he maybe needs to
be seeing without and it. But it takes the big force,
the guy who's won five championships, the guy who is
the president of Basket Operation. He has to be the
(24:13):
one to go in and settle things down, listen to
what they all happen, saying let it be a group conversation,
which the book is really good at doing. But it
takes Magic Johnson to do something like that. And I
think he has a plan on media team in Atlanta,
which is the last game or the ship before the
start the All Star break, but he might need to
(24:34):
meet them in You might need might buston you might.
That's that's true too. But did kind of get there
with the paid deadline being at dude, you know you
kind of russian things just in case something that happened,
but because of you talk to them one day on Friday.
(24:55):
Let it settle in both packs on sign um. They
did make it. They did make a trade, did make
an acquisition um last night as they went out and
and got got a shooter from the Detroit pistons um
and acquired Reggie Bullock. If they don't pull off the
Anthony Davis trade, will they add any more shooting which
(25:16):
has been so sorely needed. They're looking, but as I
had two gmsel this morning, people really don't want to
deal with the Lakers. They don't want to help them out.
And my years are coming in from my and my
years are doing this. That has always been the case.
But Jerry West found a way, so that makes cup checked.
(25:39):
He found a way. Magic is trying to find a way.
They're finding that teams just don't want to do with
it because they don't want to make them better. They
don't care about the Lake up brand and they want
to win it. Well, so yes, they all looking. They
did pull off this one field. They get Reggie bull
That someone out going since it's days and he played
for the Clippers. He had and crew a lot over
(26:01):
the years. So it's not over yet. There is time.
But they have one more shooter to add to what
they have, and they hope that can help them even
if they don't get anyone else before the player deadline. Brad,
great stuff. You've been in an awesome job covering this
this team all season long, enough of course leading up
here to the trade deadline. Can't wait to read what
you write next for the l A Times or tweet
(26:22):
out next un your Twitter handle. All right, get back
to Bluetooth. We're glad you didn't get hulled over. I
do I want questions? Yeah, I got I landed at ten.
I'm sure you. I frew coach, so you know I
flew coach, but because I fly so much, I got
(26:42):
bumped up to first class. So I'm not gonna sit
here and say that my company was willing to was
going to pay for first But you fly enough, Brad,
Welcome back, Thanks so much. It's a beautiful day in
the City of Angels. But what a mess. I love
this idea that magic would be like, hey, everybody good
like No, dude, No, I just like I the days.
(27:08):
It's one of the things that I the two or
three things we don't do a good enough job in
the media of portraying is one. How good these guys are.
I tell the story all the time my dear friends.
Miles Simmy's an assistant on the Lakers. He used to
be the workout guy for Chris bosh Um. When he
got done playing, he was just getting the broadcasting. He
(27:28):
was one of the best workout guys. That's what he
does with the Lakers. He's one best workout guys in
the entire world. And I'll never forget. After his first
year playing with Lebron Bosch, who had been an is
So guy, a pick and pop guy, but also a
guy who catched the ball, the block of the elbow
was like, look, I gotta work on catch and shoot
mid deep, mid range, the threes. I've never done it before.
(27:49):
I gotta do it because playing with Lebron, I gotta
play like a five and I gotta play off the basketball.
Kenny had to adjust involve his game and so they
shot a hundred, you know, twenty two ft deep. Two's
first time he'd ever done it. Just working on different
types of footboard catches, you made ninety one. So one
of the things we do a bad job of, Like, look,
(28:10):
these guys are unbelieved there's four fifty NBA players in
the entire world. The other thing we do a bad
job portraying is that they're not idiots? Are there? Are
there a couple of idiots? Yes, four and fifty guys
stands the reason that in any company of four fifty,
there's probably fifteen to fifty idiots, right, But the rest
(28:31):
of the guys pretty bright and although they might not be,
but not all of them are books smart. There's a
lot of guys that are very intelligent terms of understanding
nuances of personalities and conversations, and that they've lived a
longer life than twenty two to twenty eight years old.
So when you're Kyle Kuzma and you think, hey, I'm
(28:52):
Lebron's guy. Yeah, I'm a valued asset, and then all
of a sudden you're thrown in with a Lonzo and
Brandon Ingram and then they got to throw in first
round picks, and you're like, wait, what how come Lebron
or Magic Johnson who said how great I was? How
come we didn't stand up because no, that guy is
too good for us to trade. How do you think
you'd feel? Words ring hollow? It doesn't matter what you
(29:13):
say it's your actions not It's your actions not your words. Right,
you can tell your wife, baby, baby, I changed, Maybe
I changed, Like what are you doing Saturday night? Like
going out with my boys? All right, action is not words.
I don't know how you fix it. Once you you
lost that trust. That's a hard thing to get back.
(29:35):
Let's get you to Dan Buyer, who co champion of
the of the Farmer's Insurance open pro am with with me.
I was writing his coat tails as well as um,
it's a great team effort. It was a great team effort. Well,
what was the lawyer's name? Was it? Yes? She was unbelievable. Yes,
(29:56):

I have his option exercised by the Falcons at ESPN.
Report says the Buccaneers may have an interest in Bryant
now that he is a free before yeah, I think so. Yeah,
(30:39):
so you could be going back to Tampa, could be
going do you remember them? Remember his his son he
had he lost his son, remember and it was, oh god,
it was just I've heard he's a great guy. I
mean obviously forty three years old. Who knows if he
still has the leg? But um, yeah, anyway, sorry, no,
there was a family tragedy. I remembered that. I can't
(31:00):
remember the exact details on it. But Matt Brian, as
he said, could be going back to Tampa. The Boston

Yeah that that that to me though, Uh feels like, yeah,
he interviewed with them and then all of a sudden
they put that just the reaction to social media, right,
social media is like you cannot bring this guy on.

So buy are you you're talking? I think before about
these rule changes which wouldn't go into effect this year
for Major League Baseball, right, So for people whould um
and and their their proposals, right, a three batter minimum
for pictures, so you can't do the righty rightdy lefty
(32:28):
lefty right, the universal designated hitter, which I don't like.
Like I like the double switch. A single trade deadline
before the All Star break, meaning you can't have the
waiver wire trade deadline right, so it's it becomes a
soft deadline. A twenty second pitch clock that one feels
like that one will work. Expansion of rosters, the twenty
(32:49):
six men with twelve pitcher maximum. That's because people are
loading up on their bullpens, draft advantages for winning teams
and penalties for losing teams, so like a reverse lottery system.
I don't know how that works. Might the bridge get richer?
But this is the cutaway from tanking, which we told you.
Baseball teams have been tanking, copying the NBA, and it's worked.
The Houston Astros tanked and it apps. That's how they
(33:10):
loaded up on players. A study lower the mound obviously
that would increase offense. And a rule that would allow
two sport amateurs to sign major league contracts. Huh fascinating.
All right, we'll keep tabs on that as well as
if anybody actually wants to overpay for Bryce Harper and
Manny Machado coming up next to Pelicans. Um, well, the
(33:33):

not have Anthony Davis back on the court tonight. Is
that real news or fake news? Find out next. Be

(34:37):
Do? Do Do? Do Do Do? My son's at school rama,
so he's not he can't hear this, but my wife
texts me today she's gonna surprise him Friday and take
him going skigo skiing for the day. I'm like, I
want to be my son? How how do I? How
do I get a mom like that? And then she's like,
do you mind if I don't? Like? No, take me
(34:59):
with you? But anyway, I'd be it'd be fun for them.
I didn't ski growing up at all, and we had
a near divorce moment one one February morning. This is
probably he's nine now, so it's probably eight years ago
on February and a Sunday in Connecticut, about fifteen minutes
were from where I lived was a place called Ski Sundown.
(35:20):
It was good for learning how to ski. Um anyway,
she's like, hey, you're going to learn how to ski.
So the time, I'm you know, in my early thirties,
and but she decided let's not take a lesson. I'll
just let's throw you on some skis, go down the
bunny slubes a couple of times. You'll figure it out.
She told me pizzas like pizza slice, pizza slice. Music.
Do you ski? No, I very very rarely snowboard. Okay,
(35:44):
have you ever skied? You never skied? Ramosever skied. I
skied one time when I was seven and I went
into a wall. Wait, skied into eight. I didn't have
to stop wait, wait a walt. Stopping is the hard part.
It was a picket fence white and I just I
couldn't stop anyone right into it. But I think it
was part of the story. Okay, So my wife gets
(36:05):
so we get up there and she's like, pizza sliced,
pizza slice, pizza slice, right, that's where you turn your
toes in. And so I eventually, after falling down a
couple of times, get to where I'm going down the
hill and I can't stop. Right, She's like pizza slice.
And there's these little kids are like five years old
that are tearing it up and I almost run them over.
(36:25):
I almost maul them. So I was like, I'm done.
I can't do this. She's like, no, no no, no, no,
you're you're fine. Just pizza slice. The second time I
do it, and now I really get going and now
I really nearly kill somebody. I said, I want to
file for divorce at that very moment. How can you
do this to me? I don't even like the cold,
like snow skiing. It takes me out. I said, how
(36:48):
do you turn? She's like, well, you know, you don't
really need to know that. Yes, I do. Well, you
lean to the side and you turn. Once I learned that,
that was cool. I have no idea how to snowboard.
I kind of think that would be I'm a terrible skateboarder,
so I'm never gonna learn a snowboard. Let's get to
this is game time side on the Doug Gottlieb Show.

The game today? Doug? Is real news? Fake news? Alright,
real news are fake news. That probably gets forward to
(37:34):
Anthony Davis will return from his finger injury and play
tonight against the Bulls. This one this finger, Oh no,
not fake that is fake news. David's gonna sit out
until at least after the trade deadline. His head coach
Alvin Gentry said as much today, but something we expected.
Don't know if we'll see him after the trade deadline,
(37:56):
whether it be in a Uni uniform of the Pella
Cans are Lakers, but we won't see him tonight against
the Bulls. Um The question becomes, if they don't trade him,
does he do they play him the rest of the year?
Right that becomes like an a legit question. I would
I would sit there and play him, Like, hey, dude,
you want to be moved, fine, you want your your
star player carry us, show us you can carry us.
(38:19):
This idea that you keep away from the team, I
just don't agree with. Real news are fake news that
Toronto Raptors guard Kyle Lauri dared the team to trade
him after responding to reports he was involved in trade rumors.
That sounds like yeah. Laurie says that he wants to
win a championship in Toronto, but if the team would
deal him, he says he believes management would make him
(38:40):
aware of what is going down. I thought management did
has been reported to make him aware, but the fact
that he said would lead you to believe, uh, what
would you believe? Would would lead you to believe that
they have not told him yet. Real news are fake news, Doug.
After winning a national che ampionship, Clemson is on top
(39:01):
of the world again as they have the top recruiting
class in college football in twenty nineteen. That sounds like
real news. That is fake news. Alabama in Georgia, the many,
many different recruiting rankings that you'll find, you'll find those
two SEC schools on top. So yeah, Kirby's smart reeling
and some more talents in Georgia. So those well looks
(39:22):
and and they're those schools are an hour apart, and
so h it's very interesting. You know, george has been
a sleeping giant for years. They've recruited well for years.
They just haven't won a national championship. Now getting into
college ball playoff um two years ago and last year
coming up just short of it. That's not a surprise.
If you can recruit the state of Georgia and Clemson can,
they can, and you can you know, recruit Florida, which
(39:44):
of course Georgia Cannon, Clemson can. You're gonna be pretty good.
Clemson of course, and Georgia recruits some North Carolina as well.
Some of Virginia bring guys down mostly Georgia and Florida.
You're good, they'll both those programs. Do It Texas and
then l s U Texas also faring well in recruiting
for the twenty nineteen college football recruiting season. Real news
(40:05):
are fake news. Former Oklahoma head coach Bob Stoops will
be the new head coaching GM of the XFL franchise
based in Dallas. Um, it's rumored that that is rumored
to be true. I haven't seen if it's actually happened,
but rumored to be true, and they're spectacular. Road Football
talk dot Com says the announcement will come down tomorrow,
kind of trying to steal the thunder of the A
(40:28):
A f L, which makes its debut this weekend. Yeah,
you interested in watching more football this weekend? Um? Not
really me either, I just I am not. I am
not on board with these other football leagues. I more NFL, Sure,
more football? It's like, do you do do you watch
(40:50):
the G League? No? Yeah, real news are fake news.
Free fielder Bryce Harper recently met with the San Francisco Giants.
That sounds like real, they're real, and they're spectacle. John
Hayman of the MLB Network and fan Cred saying that
a meeting went down between the sides. In fact, there
have also been other meetings with Harper that could be
(41:12):
showing the price tag for the friage and outfielder is dropping.
This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. M hmm. Look,
here's my quick take on the Anthony Davis proposed trade,
(41:32):
which I have not I think clearly stated. I study history.
I actually like history, you know. And what what doomed
One of the things that doomed Hitler is because he
didn't study it, or maybe he thought he was better
than Napoleon attacking Russia in the winter, fighting a war
on two fronts. The same is true with the Lakers.
(41:54):

we've seen almost everything, so we know how to cover
almost anything. With's game time. Have an experienced player to
help you stay ahead of the game. Put their experience
in plant Farmers dot com are Um, I've never seen
anything like last night. I'm sure it's happened before. I'm
sure you've had. But the idea that you have a
(42:38):
historically great player whose return from injury, and the announcement
that or at least on on social media and various
media sites, that a trade would not be consummated at
least at this point. And then a team seemingly shutting
down on their best player and not being beaten, being
(42:58):
humiliated on the road to a team that in the
Indiana patrient doesnt have the best player and one All Star,
and then Lebron is sitting in the end of the
bench and the three seats in between himself and the
rest of the team. The lack of interaction and cohesiveness
there is in the that is not a good look.
And look, I don't only blame Lebron, not only it's
(43:21):
Rich Paul's fault because he has tried to plant seeds
throughout the league, which is upset several people. But also
he's planned seeds with the They don't want Lucas the coach,
and they're willing to do whatever it takes. In Anthony
Davis's dad's like, that's all planet stuff. But I don't
just I don't just blame lebron and and Rich Paul.
I blame Magic Johnson. You can't let it leak out
(43:41):
that you're what you're willing to give in a trade.
Make an offer and get it done. Otherwise this this
is what can happen. And then I I don't frankly
understand del Dems. You're gonna wait on the Boston Celtics
hoping they offer Jayson Tatum, not knowing, especially when the
any Ange has pulled off some of the masterful trades,
(44:04):
one sided trades. You were offered a herschel Walker type
of deal and turned it down even though the Lakers
were bidding against themselves. All right, he's he's we're actually friends.
We just have Twitter beefs over stuff sometimes real beefts
on set as well. He's Nick right, he has his
own radio show He also co host First Things First,
which you can see every morning on Fox Sports One. Uh.
(44:26):
I know you watched last night's Laker game because it
was one of the few that was played in your
time zone where you can actually be a human being
and watch the ball game and then get a night's
sleep before you woke up. First Things First, What was
your reaction what you saw? Yeah, I hear, well, I
have a reaction to my fun I heard from you
in the last two minutes. We'll start with what I saw.
(44:46):
I mean, not only is it not unprecedented, it's exactly
what happened last year with the Calves. The Calves last year,
a week before the deadline, everyone knew they were expendable.
They lost by thirty two at home, and the next
game they law they got outscored in the second half
by Orlando sixty five to thirty one, turning a six
(45:10):
team point leading to an eight team point loss. And
then the next day or two days later, the roster
got made over. Lebron resumed being the greatest player ever,
and they made the NBA Finals like we this time.
Part of doing business with Lebron, here's the deal. You
get the best player in the world. You go to
the finals, you have a chance to win a championship,
(45:33):
and around the trade deadline, things are going to be uncomfortable.
David Black gets fired. He says, we need a bleeping playmaker.
They remake the entire team, Kusman Ingram's feelings are hurt,
like that's the chronology of the last four years, and
then the team ends up being fine because they have Lebron.
I don't understand why people are acting like this is unprecedented.
(45:57):
It happened one year ago this week, like this is
what happens. And guess what. Lebron's roster building has turned
out perfectly each of the last seven years. Well, it
also turned out perfectly in the East end. It was
prohibitively more difficult to make deals with Cleveland because of
the contracts happen. Let's not get back into the Cleveland Cavaliers.
(46:20):
So take me back to last year when they had
these disastrous performances. Was Lebron as disengaged with the rest
of the team as he appeared to be last night. Well,
the in the thirty two point lost to Houston February
third of last year, so almost exactly a year ago
this day, he was three of tim from the field.
He almost snapped his all time record UH double digit
(46:43):
scoring streak. He had eleven points in that game, eleven,
nine and nine if I'm not mistaken. And he looked
like he didn't like any of his teammates, and I
don't think he liked many of his teammates. And then
a lot of those teammates got traded. I and I
know that you, for some reason believe that not only
is Magic Johnson and a dope for offering the trade,
(47:05):
but Del Dimps is a dope for not accepting the trade. Yes, you,
you somehow, you, Doug Gottlieb has a drastically undervalued Anthony
Davis compared to the rest of the NBA in its entirety.
I don't I don't understand how the information has come
out in the last week and a half hasn't made
(47:26):
you re evaluate whether or not your initial evaluation was wrong.
I this is this is this is the Carmelo Anthony trade.
That that's what that's what it is, and it ruined
the Knicks for years to come. The only difference, obviously
was Mellow didn't have Lebron sitting waiting there for him.
But the idea that you have a young roster and
you have the opportunity in the off season to add
(47:47):
pieces to it. Maybe maybe I'm overvaluing. I think Calkus
was pretty good. I don't think he's an All Star yet.
I think he's he's a step below an All Star.
I don't love Brandon Ingram, but he's not terrible. And
I actually like Lonzo Paul. I like their upside. I
think that's too much. But then you throw in the
two first round picks, and you're killing any chance of
any sort of future. I don't know what you're gonna
(48:09):
put on the rest of that roster, because I think
it's smarter to to wait, and you're gonna get if
If if Lebron is as good as we all think
he is, he's gonna get somebody. And I think those
guys are going to be good enough in the coming year.
But hold on, Doug that you're doing revisionist history with
the Carmelo trade, because, first of all, after the Carmelo trade,
(48:29):
the Knicks one four games, got to the second round
of the playoffs, and Mellow it was not at his
peak as good as Anthony Davis is. Right now, that's
first of all. Second of all, what killed the Knicks
was not the Mellow trade. It was the Amori signing.
They had a bad free agent signing trying to get
the second best player. That's second of all. Third of all,
(48:51):
I'm gonna go back to the day that the Anthony
Davis trade demand came out. I put out Ingram Paul Kuzma,
Zoo bops to first and Stevenson. So the contracts worked
you and I like, as you alluded to with the
war on Twitter, you saying that I would be a
terrible GM, that that is a way over pay. Since then,
(49:15):
the Lakers that off have offered that plus thirty cent,
and not only Del Dimps, the entirety of the NBA
sphere has said not sure if that's enough, I'd wait
on Boston, And yet you're entrenched that. No, no, no, no no, no.
Both these guys just are undervaluing their asset. When you
(49:36):
have a thirty five year old or thirty I'm part
of me, thirty four year old Lebron James the president
that the president is what matters, and they're not trying
to trade for a thirty two year old Anthony Davis.
They're trying to trade for a twenty five year old
Anthony Davis. Those picks don't matter. The young guys don't matter.
I know you like Luke, I know you like the
(49:56):
coaching staff, but you gotta divorce yourself from the ability
to have the best player in the league and one
of the other five best players in the league is
the most important thing here, no matter the straits you
have to go to do it. Well. Look, I don't
think that's what the rest of the NBA sphere thinks.
The Twitter sphere might think that, but many of people
(50:19):
I talk to the NBA like, dude, that's a crazy trade.
The only thing it doesn't have is it doesn't have
what people think Jayson Tatum could be, or it doesn't
have what people think of Zion Williamson or r J.
Barrett could be. Specifically to the needs of New Orleans, right,
they're gonna need some sort of hope for the future
instead of getting a group of young players that are
(50:39):
pretty good, however good you think they are. I just like, look,
if you're Del Demps, You're you're sitting there going like, hey,
I'm gonna bet on Danny Ainge making a better trade.
When making a trade that that suits me better. When Danny,
when Danny age has gotten over on everybody, and and
when if Kyrie leaves, I'm sorry, interrupted, Kyrie leaves, Katum
(51:02):
will not be on the table, and then the Celtics
as sense and Jalen Brown is right now overvalued by
Boston fans and properly dreaded by everyone else. And so,
like I, the risk that Dell Demps is running is
a very simple one. The Knicks don't win the lottery,
and there's an eighty six percent chance they won't, then
Zion is off the table because none of the other
(51:24):
teams would trade him Cleveland, Phoenix, Chicago, Atlanta, none of
them would trade him for a one year of Anthony Davis, right,
And then Kyrie leaves, then Tatum's off the table, and
then the Lakers get to come back to Dell Dempson
say our last offer is our new offer, and then
he's in a position where can you remember what Kawhi
(51:47):
Leonard got. Kawhi Leonard and Danny Green got de marda
Rose and Yako Peartle and one first round pick like
that MS is running. That's kind of that's kind of
my point, right, I understand why the Lakers. Is what
why Del Demps thinks the Lakers need to play more
and why the league thinks the Lakers need to play more.
But I look at what what you got form, what
(52:08):
you got from Paul George, what you got for for
Kawhi letter qwhi letters the top five player in the league,
although we all do, we do throw these top five
players and we're kind of running are like, wait, James
Harden's the top five player. But right there's a lot
of time. No, no, no, I'm very specific with that.
I wouldn't I wouldn't say, I know what you mean.
Most people have eight in their top five because they
(52:28):
have Lebron Kadie, Steph Hardened, Kauai, Anthony Davis Ross And
I'm leaving one obvious guy out that is escaping me
at the moment. But like most people have those at
least those seven as their top five. But no, I
understand what you're saying. Go ahead, I'm sorry, no, no,
I just but but my point is you you have
to base it on previous trades. And I understand the
(52:50):
difference in Kauai is it was only a one year
potentially a one year rental. The difference in Paul George
the one year rental, so it could it would be
worth more than But we also have remember like when
Victor Oladipo was traded, he wasn't an all star, you know,
it was actually people thought it was a bad contract,
and and and and Sabonis had started half of his
rookie year, but he wasn't seen as a as a
(53:11):
great player. And you could make a case that there
was last year you made the case that Indy won
the trade. Now you'd say, hey, kind of a fair trade, right,
and that was a that was a two for one.
I feel I could be dead wrong. I think I
think Cusma was really good. I have not the worst
thing going for Alonzo Ball is his dad. And though
(53:32):
I'm not a Brandon, brandon Ingla was the guy that
I least want to part with. I would have thought
one of those, one of Alonzo Ball or Kuzma would
have been enough. Both of them feels like too much.
Then you throw in the picks. I get the salary
cap stuff. But then you throw in the picks, and
now I'm like, man, okay, so let me ask you this.
Let me ask you this, and honest real quick for you,
(53:53):
because the guy I left out, go ahead, perfect, perfect, right?
But okay, so wait who is the top I've so
how how would I do it? Yes? I would go
Lebron one, Janice two, step three hardened for Anthony Davis five,
Kevin Durant six. All right, I mean I think yeah,
(54:16):
I think white letters pretty quite Leonard like James Harden.
It would be you know, in the tour. You know,
then then you come down to all right, do you
have to help at both ends? And then what happened?
All right? Let me ask you this new reports that
most people in the Warriors organization think it's done. K
D goes to the Knicks, um and the idea is, well,
(54:37):
k D and either Kyrie or Kemba goes with him.
What's your reaction when you hear that report? I think
that's accurate. Listen. The only reason no one is no
reporter is reporting Kevin Durant is going to the Knicks
is because Durant could change his mind. But Kevin Durant's
(54:58):
going to the Knicks like the Nicks knew it. That's
why they're making this move. The the writing has been
on the Draymond knew it. It's why he flipped out
on him, like Kevin Durant in his ongoing quest to finally,
one day maybe someone will say at some point he's
better than Lebron. James realized going to the Warriors. Beating
(55:18):
Lebron in the finals somehow didn't get me any closer
to the people that tweet at my burner accounts saying
I'm the best. So I guess I gotta go try
to do what Lebron did and bring a championship to
a championship starve city. So I I believe that is accurate.
I think the only reason it's not being reported the
same way. It seemed like everyone knew Lebron was going
(55:41):
to the Lakers, but no one wanted to report it
because Lebron could change his mind. Kevin Durant could change
his month. What do you think of the Philadelphia move?
I love it, I love it, I love it, I
love it. I uh listen to Miami picks. Valuable in theory.
Pat Riley though, just got j Jones to take a
bad contract off his hands in Tyler Johnson, so maybe
(56:03):
he's gonna reinvent the heat once again. But you they
went into the year as my pick to make the
NBA Finals because I thought they would do something significant
to go along with him beating Simmons. I didn't think
they'd had Jimmy Butler and Tobias Harris. They now have spacing,
they have incredible length. They're going to be extraordinary Defensively,
(56:25):
Simmons Black shooting isn't as much of a liability. I
Elton brand I love the move. I I don't know.
I apologize. I haven't seen what you said on it.
Maybe you disagree, but no, I think it's I think
I think the short I think in the short term
it's awesome. I have no idea what how the Jimmy Butler,
which the chemistry hasn't seemed to work yet, if it
fixes it, I'm I'm gonna sitting and tell you I
(56:46):
think the East probably better than the West. Of the
top three team looks like Toronto's legit good and and
I think Boston is legit good if kind of they
figure out their chemistry. Obviously the Gordon Hayward thing hasn't
worked out to this point. He looks like a shell
of himself. And I think the Sixers are legit good,
like those are three big time teams that the East
just has not had to compete back when Lebron was
(57:07):
in the East, and listen and you left out the
best team, Milwaukee. But this was this was an inevitability
that the East. Of course, the top of the East
the last few years has been good. But because folks,
I'm not naming names, but Tuck Gottlie has been going
out of their way to discredit Lebron. We're gonna act
like Toronto didn't win sixty, Atlanta didn't win sixty, that
(57:28):
there weren't really good teams out east. So it was
the East was terrible, and now Lebron's out west and
when the Lakers make the Western Conference finals this year,
it's going to be well, actually, now that you look
at it, it's the East that's the stronger conference. The
West aside from the Lakers. Oh, denver, are they that good?
Like we already know how this story will be told.
(57:48):
I'm glad it's starting to be told already. Well know,
I mean, like, look, the Celtics added Kyrie Irving and
didn't have him last year, and they had him for
sixty games, right, but in terms of how good they
actually were, right, So like, look, this is you want
part of the story the Genius to when he went
to Miami, he destroyed two other powers in two other
(58:09):
Eastern Conference foes by taking Bosch and then and also
got real and eventually as well, and they and they,
you know, he destroyed the Calves by leaving the Calves
and they became a team that was tanking, and the
East was bad. It's inarguable. And by the way, the Raptors,
while they were good last year, they went out and
added the top five player in the NBA. So of
course they're damn better than they were last year. Like
(58:30):
if you want to tell the story, they they're better
because they're actually better, right, like the course they're of
course they're better. But it's the what I what I
heard all the last few years was the East was terrible.
It was terrible. It was it was getting better last
last year, it got last year, it was better, but
it was terrible before and when and when he when
(58:53):
he left and when he left Miami. When he left Miami, Miami,
which was the dominant team in the East, it is destroyed.
And then Chris Posh of course had the blood clots,
so they became who are the other who are the
other good teams? Well, I mean Toronto won sixty games,
but that doesn't count because they got swept by the Calves.
That at the beginning of the run, the Hawks won
sixty games, but that didn't count. Where the Hawk were
(59:16):
the Hawks legit good, but they've been legit good in
the West they won sixty games. No, I got it.
I understand the Celtics had the best record in the
NBA two years ago. Were they legitimately one of the
top five teams in the NBA? No? No, all right, No,
I get it. Listen, this is the thing. It's it's
in the same line of logic that when you and
(59:37):
I were talking on Twitter. In the entire NBA world
has been set on its head because Anthony Davis is
trying to force his way to play with Lebron James.
And your takeaway was, no, one wants to play with
Lebron James. No, the the Lakers, Listen, I got, I gotta,
(59:57):
I gotta go. But that that wasn't the takeaway. The
takeaway was there appears to be a panic in l
A because they can't get Kauai. They can't get k
d can't get Clay Thompson. These guys could all go
on their own volition, and they're not, and that's why
they're willing to overpay to get them. I gotta go.
I know you've got your show, and you got first
things first, Nick Wright, thanks so much for join us.
We'll take a break from the NBA turn our attention

How did the Patriots suddenly become a dynamic defense? How?
How did this happen? How'd this happen? And how fixable

about that fight, and it's pretty embarrassing to watch, but
there are actually some lead like legit punches, like dudes

punches thrown in that short clip than they were in

deadline down less than twenty four hours away. It's three
o'clock Eastern time tomorrow, so I guess we've got about
(01:03:32):
twenty two and a half hours to go. The Bucks
did trade Fonmaker. The Center is going to Detroit in
exchange for Stanley Johnson, so a swap of former first
round picks there. The Raptors sent Maliki Richardson to the
Sixers for cash considerations. A deal going down. According to
The Athletic and ESPN, the Heat are sending Tyler Johnson
and Wayne Ellington to Phoenix for Ryan Anderson. That a

trade just happening. While La Marcus Aldrin j DeMar de

was accused of pushing down the mother of his daughter,
causing her to fall and hurt her wrist. Finally, it's

show here on Fox Sports Radio. Man, it's been great
to have this guy all season long. He's great co
self in the NFL films and he's been doing it
(01:05:01):
for forty years. And I I'd love to say that
I was surprised, but I wasn't by the power running attack.
But now I'm I'm following guys on Twitter who breakdown tape.
Maybe not for as long as you have or as
well as you have, but they breakdown tape and they're like, look,
you gotta understand there's all different sorts of running schemes
and blocking schemes. At the Patriots were able to execute
(01:05:22):
because they have smarter players and they prepare better. Is
that what you saw Greg with their ability to run
the football. It wasn't just that they ran it, it
was the diversity of styles of attack. Well, we've talked
about that for the last number of weeks, that they
have a very multiple and diverse run game and they
stay with it, and we saw that in the Super Bowl.
We saw the different kinds of runs. Uh. You know,
(01:05:45):
very often I chart the number of different runs, and
I would say the Patriots were probably up in the
thirteen fifteen category in terms of different kinds of run
schemes and uh to execute that. You know, I remember
years ago talking to Phil Simms and each on me
that practicing and executing the run game is actually more
difficult than the passing game. Most people just assume the
(01:06:06):
passing game is more detailed and difficult to execute, but
the run game is probably more so, and the Patriots
are among the best in the league at it. Uh.
How did Tom Brady play when you watch him one time? Well,
you know, I think defense is what made this game,
and for a lot of people that's boring, But when
I watched the tape, I was fascinated and I thought
(01:06:27):
what Wade Phillips did strategically with outstanding Doug because he
almost took the approach that the Patriots pass game is
very quick rhythm, the ball gets out, so my energies
will not be focused on pass rush. My energies will
be focused on making him pausibly in deciphering what we're
doing with our coverage concepts. And he did that exceptionally well.
He did that by really mixing his his coverage looks
(01:06:51):
by showing different man looks and then playing zone by
showing his own looks and playing man. So he just
caused Brady among the best there is that the ciphering
a defense before the snap of the ball. He forced
Brady to take an extra beat after the snap of
the ball, and that just slowed down the decision making.
Doug Gotland Show, Vox Sports Radio. So back to my
(01:07:12):
first question, Like, yes, the the defense was dynamic. Uh,
it was exotic, and it's a good defensive line. Although
he got rid of the ball really quickly. I mean,
did he play well, did he play poorly and then
played well in the last drive. How did you think
he played? I think he played erratically, and I thought
they made a really nice change on there on that
(01:07:33):
touchdown drive where they went with what we call twenty
two personnel, two backs and two tight ends and lined
up in empty sets. They did that on three consecutive plays,
and they actually ran the same route concept, the same
play concept, i should say, on three consecutive plays which
got them down inside the five, and each time Brady
hit a different player. He hit an element on the
(01:07:55):
juke or jerk or out on the first one, he
hit Burkehead on the hitch on the second one, and
and he had Gronkowski on the seam on the third one.
But it was all part of the same play concept
and the same route concept. By the way, that's what
I do in flag football is is we basically we
we we line up and we have you know, we
have one player route concept and we just have the
(01:08:16):
quarterback look for a different option every every time. And
you know, kind of line up quickly and while the
defense is trying to kind of figure it out, we're
going the same thing, only looking kind of do a
different part of the football field. That's that's Gottli football
one oh one. Uh Doug gotlip here on Fox Sport
trade a great costell is our guest, all right, what
about the other side? Help tell me if I helped
(01:08:36):
me if I'm wrong. I thought the Patriots didn't have
a very good pass rush most of the season, And
how do they all of a sudden have a really
good pass rush in the playoffs against better teams. Well,
I think that they're What they did defensively, what Chick
did to me is really the story of this game,
because he had a as we would expected to find approach,
and what he did in normal down and distant situations
(01:08:58):
such as first and ten, such as second and five,
second and six is he lined up in nickel. He
lined up with a six one front six across, so
he had Patrick Chung and Kyle van Noy as outside linebackers,
and he had one stacked backer, Dante high Tower, and
that took away the outside zone run game of the Rams,
(01:09:19):
one of their foundations. Then he played what we call
quarters or cover four. And what that did is it
also got safeties with a run responsibility if need be.
But it also took away the inbreaking routes, which are
an absolute staple of the RAMS first and ten play
action pass game. So he essentially took away two staples
(01:09:40):
of the RAMS first down offense where they're so explosive
with his front and with his coverage. Um, how much
of the fact that Jared Goff, you know, the Rams,
I've been told it's all about play action, right, how
much of it is would play action you turn her
back to the defense, And they were changing looks that
he thought he saw, you know, prestap and then once
(01:10:03):
they snapped the football, they actually changed the look. Well,
that happened on the play in which Cooks was wide
open on a busted coverage in the end zone that
McCardy had to come over because that was actually a
first down. I believe it was first down. It might
have been second down, but it was a shot play
type thing all the time out, right, they called it
time out, and they saw they had something they thought
they liked. Yeah, And and they actually ran a similar
(01:10:24):
concept in the first quarter. But this play came at
the end of the third quarter, and what happened is
the Patriots showed a Cover three look with a single
post safety before the snap of the ball, and Goff
one play action, turned his back to the defense and
the Patriots rotated to Cover four or quarters, which changes
the read for Goff when he when he turns back around,
(01:10:45):
and when he got his head around, it took him
a moment to adjust to the read he didn't get.
He didn't adjust quickly enough, and the Patriots busted the
coverage and Cooks was wide open running the vertical seam,
and by the time he read ignized that mccordy was
able to come over from the back side. So that
was an example where they changed the coverage after the
(01:11:07):
snap of the ball and Goff did not really recognize
it quickly enough. It should have been an easy touchdown.
Did did Todd Gurley look okay to you physically on tape?
You know everybody's asking that. No one knows the answer
to that. The only thing I'll say is if Todd
Gurley was healthy, and we don't know that, but if
he was, then to meet Todd Gurley has to play
(01:11:29):
every snap. Yeah, really fascinating that we still haven't. Like
usually you get the forty eight hours after Superot like,
oh hey, by the way, Todd Gurley had you know
this with his knee or this with his hamstring? Right,
this is it's like the Malcolm Butler of last year. Right.
We never found out exactly what Malcolm Butler did, but
we did find out eventually he was in the check
himself of the hospital business playing like we haven't heard
(01:11:50):
any of that stuff with with Butler. And it's not
like people haven't asked. There's just no answers, no, and
they're saying that there's nothing wrong with you know what.
Teams say what they want, you know that. But you know,
to me, Todd Gurley all of last year and through
the first twelve weeks of this year was a driving
force of that offense. And then he did get hurt
and missed a game or two. But unless he was
(01:12:12):
truly hurt, I don't know, you know, so I can't
answer that. I don't have a brilliant answer for that.
How uh, what's what's you're feeling on golf now that
you've seen him on TEP for two years in this
offense and you've seen him in some big spots. Uh. Look,
he had he had a big boy drive against the
Saints really twice in the first half and and end
of regulation. Um going back two weeks ago, but he
(01:12:35):
didn't play great and in the face of pressure really
seemed to uh to misread some things and to get
rid of the ball at odd times a little bit late,
held on the ball a little bit late. What's your
fielding on golf heading forward? Well, I think in many
ways he's somewhat of a programmed quarterback. I think that
things have to be defined for him. The reads and
(01:12:55):
the throws have to be defined. I think an area
he needs significant work this offseason. And my guest is
Sean McVeigh knows this a lot better than I do,
is he needs to improve as what we call Doug
a late in the down quarterback where he stays in
the pocket a little longer, where the primary is not
defined and he has to read it out. One thing
(01:13:15):
the Patriots did in this game as well is they
played more zone concepts. And I think when you play
more zone concepts, you forced the quarterback to read it
out a little more. Man is easier for a quarterback
to decipher, so I think that's an area in which
he needs to improve. But he is a pretty thrower
of the football, and when he is comfortable, he throws
it very very well. So the throwing ability is there,
(01:13:36):
but I think he needs work in what he's seeing
when it's not clearly defined, and staying through the progressions
later in the down. Let me ask you one last guy,
because you're so good at this. And of course last
year Super Bowl, nick Foles lit it up and at
times the Eagle's offense look better with Nick foles um.
They exercise the option, and then he exercised his option
(01:13:58):
for two minionar buyout. Other words, what's probably gonna happen
is they're gonna franchise to hag him and then and
then trade him. The Dolphins might need a quarterback. The Giants,
I don't know if they think they need a quarterback.
The Redskins definitely need a quarterback, but they're in division.
The Jaguars, you would think need a quarterback, but boy,
they got a lot of money sunk into Bortles. The
Broncos need a quarterback. Is there a styler system or
(01:14:22):
place that you think Nick Foles fits? Having seen him
on tape, as much as you have. Well. I think
Nick Foles is a UM I hate to use this term,
is much a system quarterback where the system needs to
work for him. UM. I think he's at his best
when the ball can come out of his hands relatively quickly.
I think the longer he's in the pocket, the less
(01:14:44):
effective he can be. Uh. He does. He's kind of
an awkward mover at times, but can be effective doing that. Um.
There's a deliberate nature to his play, which is why
I think the ball needs to come out. I think
the Eagles understood this extremely well and learned their offense
to what he did effectively. Uh. I think he can
be a quality starter in the league, and I think
(01:15:07):
you know, we will be a function of where he
goes to, nature of the offense and the surrounding pieces.
Great stuff, Craig. I can't tell how much we appreciate
you joining us and kind of teaching us about football. UM.

for you a portion of a previous show on Fox
Sports one Fix Sports Radio. We call it. This is
Chris Broussard on Undisputed discussing LaVar Balls critical comments of
Luke Walton I think Luke is the easy scapegoat because
(01:16:38):
everybody knows he's not magic and Polinka's guy, so it's
easy to go after him, and we know he will
be the scapegoat if they I don't think he'll be
there next year, you know, unless something dramatic. I'm just
gonna say, I'm not sure she's gonna make it this.
You're right, the way things are going, that might be
the case. But I don't think Luke is I'm not
saying he's read Art Baker, Phil Jackson, but I don't
(01:17:00):
think he's the problem, especially with LIONSO. Is it Luke's
fault that Alonso shooting forty one percent from the foul line?
Is it Luke's fault that Alonso's motor goes up and
down like a seesaw. Sometimes he's got it, sometimes he doesn't.
Is it Luke's fault? Ahead? Okay? Is it Luke's faked
(01:17:22):
that Alonso is not aggressive all the time. I think
it's just his personality. I think it's the way he plays.
And LaVar says, you know, Luke had him on the corner,
in the corner and all that. That's not Luke's fun.
I guess you could say because he's the head coach,
but that's Lebron. Because of the way Lebron plays and
has the ball in his hands, what's Lionzo gonna do? Well? Look,
(01:17:47):
LaVar has never offered any sort of accountability up there
in terms of the fact that though he did some
of the things he did really help develop lines of ball,
some really hampered him. The reason he stands in the
corner is because he has no other value in the
half court. He can't play pick and roll basketball. And
some of it is not all his fault because he
was hurting the offseason. He couldn't work on his game,
(01:18:09):
but he didn't have much pick and roll game because
he didn't play it growing up playing for LaVar Ball. Um, look,
this is kind of classic classic LaVar and he's a
dad and we stopped paying attention to him, and he
stopped saying stuff because we stopped paying attention to him.
I mean, it's it's nothing more the LaVar Ball. The
rise of prominence for LaVar Ball is no different than
(01:18:31):
the rise in politics of Donald Trump. Both started saying
crazy things. The more crazy things they said, the more
we covered it, even if they lacked relevance. Or they
were just completely outlandish and we couldn't stop covering who's
now the president United States, which you know, whether you
liked or didn't like him, he was on TV, that's all.
It is, the only candidate anybody talked about. It just did.
(01:18:55):
It became like carpet bomb marketing. He was everywhere, everywhere,
and um, that's what happened to the bar, and then
we stopped, We turned the cameras away, and suddenly he
became less important. I'm sure LaVar has still been running
his mouth to his boys, and I'm and I'm a
portion of it is Magic Johnson controlling things. But this
(01:19:18):
again is part of the Magic Johnson issue. Look, you
want to run the Lakers. You want to take it
back over from Jim Buss. You want to get rid
of you know you didn't bring back in Jerry West.
You want to get rich Mitch cup Check and all
the long time guys. That's fine. Mitch hadn't done a
good job recently, and Jerry West had fallen out of
favor and gone up to Golden State and he's not
(01:19:39):
involved as much in the day to day, but he's
across the street and they're doing a pretty good job. Like,
that's fine. You can you can do things. You can
hire Rob Boblinka, who was an excellent agent. But you
know what, you gotta control the situation. He can't be
leaking out names of trades. You can't be allowing people
to talk about firing your coach. And you can't have
a dad talking about a coach holding back a player
(01:19:59):
who is never healthy. And one reason he's not healthy
is because he wears shoes that are that suck. No
one else in the league will wear those shoes, not
just because they're not sponsored by him, but because they're
not basketball shoes, you know, like Nike under arm or Adidas.
They spend hundreds of thousands millions of dollars in R
(01:20:21):
and D to make sure that the shoes they put
on the feet of their athletes don't screw up and
turn over and blow out in the middle of an
NBA game, because that's bad for sho sales. So do
I think it's LaVar's fault. No, But he never is, ever, ever,
ever accountable. The kid had never played defense, He could
(01:20:44):
have never really been coached. He never played pick and roll,
He wasn't ready to be a pro. And though I
still see signs where he could be a really, really
good player. We won't know until he has a legit
NBA offseason, and that's out of his control so far
because he was hurt last offseason. Valentine's Day is Thursday,
(01:21:07):
February fourteen? Did we have to in this read? Do
we have to say February fourteenth? Do people not know
it's Thursday Febuary fourteenth? Every year? Feverryuary fourteenth? That's fine.
What gift are you getting for the one you love? Say?
Four hundred dollars and a half care total weight diamond
heart pendant now only to show Cubid who's bossed this
(01:21:28):
Valentine's Day at Hellsberg Diamonds. Yes, right, music. Do you
think any of these trade moves, whether they happen or
don't happen, have any sort of effect on the future
of Luke Walton and his tenure as the head coach? Well, look,
they went out and got Reggie Bullock, who's a who's
a really good shoot, who's a shooter, who can guard
(01:21:48):
a little bit, Like he fits what they need and like, look,
if I'm the Lakers, my my plan was for next year. Anyway,
I've heard. It's pretty obvious that the Warriors. It feels
like the Warriors, even they win a title, they're gonna
lose Marcus Cousins and Kevin Durant, right, so they will
not be as good. We don't know who they would
(01:22:08):
add in that spot, but they will not be as
good because I don't care who they had, and I
don't care what Nick Wright says. Like Kevin Rant was
better than the last two NBA Finals against Lebron James,
when he had a better team, when he had worst
it it didn't matter. They batch up against each other
and Kevin Rant was better. He lit him up in
the second half, got the m v P twice, you know,
(01:22:30):
so whatever, Like Kevin Durant legit big time. So the
Warriors are going to be worse than they were this year.
The Lakers were trending in the right direction. Oklahoma City
still can't shoot. Russell Westbrook suddenly now is mentor at
the free to the line. The Spurs appeared appeared to
be done. The Mavericks are years, you know, like a
couple of years away. The Clippers are broken themselves apart,
(01:22:52):
and maybe next year they become a super power. But
you don't win right away as a superpower. I just
think they got screwed up by trying to rush it
rush the process. Who should we blame for the Pelicans
Lakers trade debacle? Find out Next to the Dog Got Show,

the sunny city of Los Angeles, California, where we continue
to react to one of the all time beat downs,
all time beat downs in bizarre fashion. Last night, the
(01:23:35):
l A Lakers went on the road to take on
the Indiana Pacers, and I thought, all right, right before
the game, and the Lakers, through sources, leaked out, hey,
we're done bidding against ourselves, which I had pointed. It's
just a terrible way to do business from the Lakers perspective.
(01:23:58):
From Del DEM's perspective, is genius. Right, Well, offer you
a Lonzo Ball and Brandon Ingram and Land Stevenson and
a pick no try again, no go fish. Let's basically
what they said, and he kept just throwing more and
more and more and more in the pot war. It
(01:24:19):
was like it was like a herschel Walker trade Lonzo
and Ingram and Kuzuma, oh my, and then we'll give
you a couple of expiring contracts Rondo, who you shouldn't
let go get away anyway, and Beasley who you can
buy out, and some draft picks. Del Demp's never really responded.
He's like, you know what, double the draft picks and
we're in. He asked for a crazy deal, which she's
(01:24:42):
within his rights to do, but you're also within your
rights to walk away, which is what I thought Magic
Johnson did smartly walked away, but by being non communicative
and not understanding the volatility that that has been left behind,
and the fact that, like, look, this is what Lebron
(01:25:03):
does when he doesn't get his way. He just shuts down,
shuts down. He's not the only one who does that.
He's just the only superstar who does that. He just
happens to have been out for seventeen games, and then
when he came back, they won, and then he had
load management. Remember that. Look, I'm willing to believe that
(01:25:26):
he legitimately hurt his groin. But when he started leaking
stories that he could play if it was the playoffs
and your team is suffering through Kyle Kuzma having a
bad back, Rondo having hand surgery, Alonzo to rolling his ankle,
and you're still not playing and you're losing games. At
some point you gotta point out that Lebron wanted them
to lose to make his point. Do it my way
(01:25:50):
or we do it no way. That's who Lebron is.
And look, you can sit here and we had Nick
right on. You can tell me either greatest tall time, No,
he's not. First of all, the greatest of all time,
won every NBA finals. He was in second of all.
Michael Jordan had his flaws. He did punch Steve Kerr
in the face. But you know what he didn't do.
(01:26:12):
He didn't quit on his team in order to make
his point. Never quit his team to make his point.
He didn't did not quit on his team to make
his point. I just I don't know how that became. Okay,
I don't know how we'd be We got to this
point where you go like, well, he did it last
year in Cleveland and it worked out. Oh yeah, by
the way, all those guys last year, remember Dwyane Wade,
(01:26:35):
Like who wanted Dwayne Wade? Lebron James wanted Dwayne Wade.
Who the elliot think wanted him? Miami schus Held didn't
want him at at that at that pay rate, they
let They let Chicago over pay. Chicago was like, no, dude, goodbye,
We're good. Who who signed Tristan Hampson that massive deal
(01:27:01):
and Tristan Thompson with the Kardashians and all that nonsense?
Oh Rich Paul did because Lebron James said I want him?
You got j R. Smith? Who was j R. Smith
was on the floor in Game one when Lebron James
and the cat who the hell wanted j R. Smith
had that amount of money like Lebron James did. There
is no level of accountability ever, he's the least accountable
(01:27:25):
dude ever, Like, look, Jordan didn't like the front office
and he fought him on many of their moves, so
at least he has that to be like, look, if
it didn't work, and it always seemed to work, if
it didn't work, at least you go like, hey, I
my name is Bennett and I ain't in it. All
this stuff circles around Lebron, and then when he's not
(01:27:46):
getting his way, he pouts. He sits over there and
he wants his team to lose, which I guess is honest.
But what were you doing and why? You can tell me, Hey,
he did this last year. I know for a fact
that the players on that team thought we got something
(01:28:08):
good going. Remember before he got hurt, they were fourth
in the West, there were two games out of first place.
They were playing great and they thought, man, Lebron is
the best, and we got great chemistry. We added Tyson
Chandler and yeah we don't have enough shooting. Maybe we'll
add some of that. But we're really, really close. And
they were all in on the process. And then stories
(01:28:30):
start to leak and Magic Magics negotiation goes astray and
they start throwing everything in there and making guys feel
like they're useless, like they're valueless. How do you think
they're going to react? And then when Magic's out there
in the road trip and Lebron, James shuts down and
doesn't sit ner teammates. He lost his team. Now maybe
(01:28:55):
he can get it back because he's that good a player,
and maybe they pull off this Anthony Davis trade feels
like it to me, all feels like negotiating tactics. But
I don't understand why Del Demps hasn't pulled it off.
To begin with, the idea, if you've heard these reports
that the Boston Celtics are, hey, man, everybody's on the
table this summer. What about Jason Tatum? We did say
(01:29:18):
everybody's on the table, So you'll trade Jason Tatum with it.
You're dealing with Danny Age, who he's a Celtic. You
don't think he wants to tweak the Lakers. Everybody does.
Oh yeah, by the way, did Danny Age get over
on the Brooklyn Nets, Yes, he did so much, so
that was it. Billy Knight lost his job because of
(01:29:38):
that trade. He got over on the Phoenix Suns. That's
how they acquired Isaiah Thomas. That general manager uh lost
his job. Kobe Altman only didn't lose his job with
that awful trade with the Celtics to get rid of
Kyrie Irving last year because he had just gotten hired.
Oh yeah, by the way, why did ki Irving want
(01:30:01):
out from playing with Lebron James. Because of all this nonsense,
there's enough drama with guys, egos, contracts, women games to
deal with. We don't need our best players shutting down
on us, our best player having his agent plant stories
so they can get other guys represented by that agent.
(01:30:22):
Are best player planting stories so that we ultimately fire
the coach. We don't want to want all that. And look,
I'm not saying Kyrie Irving is a saint, but Lebron
James should accept some of the blame for what is
a titanic disaster over the past forty eight hours. So
should Magic Johnson his inability to control LaVar Ball, which
(01:30:44):
he had been doing great and now some when things
go bad, adversity exposes and the adversity that hit LaVar
Ball where he thinks how a Lonzo ball might be
on his way to New Orleans. That's not good for
big Baller brand. It's just not. But when adversity strikes
a lot of ball, this is what he does. He
(01:31:04):
starts blaming others. Luke's the problem. I don't want a
guy to want him to go there. And I think
Rob Polinka is a little bit of should accept some
blame because Blink is nowhere to be found. But it's
mostly Magic and Lebron to go along with Rich Paul
(01:31:26):
Rich Paul inexperienced pushing too hard, Lebron trying to control everything,
Maggic Johnson allowing them to at least believe that they
have control. And if you believe you have control, you're
gonna take control. And now it leaves Luke Walton to
feel helpless, his teammates to feel like no matter what
(01:31:49):
he says, what Lebron really thinks is he'd rather have
somebody else. And it leaves Magic Johnson in a terrible
place and to go sitiation. If I don't pull off
this trade, I have a completely unhappy team that we're
gonna have to try and fix. If I do pull
off this trade, they're gonna want the kitchen sink plus.
(01:32:12):
Because right now we feel are the only ones to negotiating,
we're negotiating against ourselves. The only thing number is the
fact that Dell Demps doesn't realize this and make a
deal that he's never going to get again. Well, if
I wait, I could sell my house for a couple
hundred thousand dollars more, or interest rates could raise up,
(01:32:32):
and you could be sitting on that house. Right Dell
Demps is the only guy who wants to negotiate with
and take Danny Angel's word for it, I mean the
roster composition and the way in which Danny Age did
it is sheer genius. They still have draft picks that
they can move. Oh hey, how did they get Jason Tatum?
(01:32:57):
Remember who they traded with the phil Elfia seventies sixers
for Marquel Folts? Who won that trade? Anybody? Anybody? Um?
I mean, look, Danny Ainge is basically he's Obi Wan Kenobi, right,
(01:33:19):
He's oh we want Kenobi? Uh yeah, uh listen. Del
Dev's like, listen, I got this offer from the Lakers.
It's pretty sweet. And Danny Ainge just says, these aren't
the droids you're looking for. You're looking for looking for.
These aren't the players were looking for. But not we
(01:33:40):
we don't. We don't want Alonzo. We don't want Kyle
Kuzma eighteen nineteen a game. We don't want Brandon Ingram
seventeen eighteen a game Alonzo ball, who should be a
double double machine, actually a triple double machine, and all
these picks and cap relief. No, no, no, we don't,
we don't want that. We want the We want the
(01:34:01):
opportunity two, maybe get Jason Tatum. If maybe Kyrie Irving
decides to stay and Jayson Tatum becomes available. What I
just I'm at a loss, but look, it's not shouldn't
(01:34:21):
be surprising. Magic Johnson incredible player, terrible analyst, like one
of the all time worst. And if you think he
was mad at ESPN, remember when he was actually at
NBC and Michael Jordan hit six threes in the first half.
It was bad. He's just not That's not what he does.
Just now he does. Great player, bad coach and as
(01:34:42):
an executive A lot of horse, not a lot of cattle,
A lot of let me say, a lot of hat
not a lot of cattle. Just is And then Del
Demp's is the guy who pulled off to Chris Paul
trade only did to have the president, the head of
the league come out and go like, that's the worst
trade I've ever seen. I just can't let that happen.
That was Dell Demps, same guy you can blame the
(01:35:06):
Pelicans on while they're owned by you know, the football side,
and they football people like, no, it's all Dell Demps.
He's negotiating the deal and he smartly kind of let
the let the Lakers bid up themselves, but then they
got to Punchle like, this is stupid, weren't done. We're
out for that reason. We're out. And that's the only
(01:35:31):
thing that tops the stupidity of what's going on in
l a where you take a good young team that
was building towards something special, and the timing of it
was supposed to be next season, not this season. And
even if the Lakers packing in and say, hey, our
(01:35:51):
offer stands for the offseason, you've ruined all your relationships
in case you decide you want to keep any of
these guys. That's the reality of it. The reality of
it is if I'm Kyle Kuzman right now, if I'm
a Lonzo Ball right now, Yon brand Ingram right now,
I'm like, dude, I don't care what you say. I
don't care about this whole it's not it's not personal,
(01:36:14):
it's just business. Lebron follows me on Twitter, tweets at
my stuff, acts like we're boys. Magic Johnson acts like
he thinks we're these great young players. That's all just
an act. How they really feel is, even with all
of us combined, they're willing to put in draft picks
and expiring contracts. We're not good enough, We're not worthy.
(01:36:37):
What a mess. Howard back from Bleacher BOYD joins the show.
Up coming next the Pelicans making a mistake by not
accepting that herschel Walker type of trade. We'll discuss next,
but first, if you're like me, you're probably wait until
the last minute. I'm the last minute guy, right Like,

Porzingis trade, another on the goat debate. Also check out

He joins us down on the Doug Gotlip Show on
(01:38:50):
Fox Sports Radio For people who did not read it.
What's your take on the Perzingis trade from both teams perspective? Well,
we'll start from the perspective since uh I am New
York based. Um to me, you know, while they got
what was an interesting return, I don't know that it's
a home run return when you're trading a guy who's
a twenty three year old All star, granted one who's
(01:39:12):
still coming back from an A c O. But they
basically used Kristaps Porzingis as the means to offload bad
contracts of Tim Hardaway Jr. And Courtney Lee. And I
don't know that was the best use of your twenty
three year old all star who's still not even yet
in his prime. And it sets them back because you know,
this is a team that has already hit the reset
button multiple times to try to rebuild, and so this
(01:39:33):
this sets the back again, but it gives them double
max cap space and if that gets them two superstars
in July never you know, no one will care that
they sacrifice Kristaps Porzingis, but if they if they strike out, um,
then this looks like another one of those short term,
short thinking moves by the Knicks. Uh. It was a
(01:39:54):
bit of a stunner. And you know, Knicks fans have
been through a lot and there haven't been that many
homegrown stars to really cheer for. Porzingis represented their best
prospect since Patrick Ewing thirty something years ago. So um,
there's that on the Dallas side of it. As you know,
as long as Porzingis gets back to who he was
before the h c L injury, a Luca Dontech, Kristaps
(01:40:14):
Porzingis one to punch. Looks like, you know, their core
for a decade or more to come and could be
absolutely phenomenal. Um, two very skilled players. Uh, you know,
we're obviously very young, a lot of room to grow together,
and it's uh, you know, I think they've already made
allusions to the idea that this is this could be
(01:40:35):
a a supersized version of Nash Navitsky from twenty years ago.
So it should be fun there. Um, how are There's
a lot of assumptions, a lot of people assuming that
Kevin Durant it's a done deal, He's going to be
a nick? Um? Where are you in that conversation? Well,
I don't assume anything. All I can tell you is
that people around the league have been assuming that and
(01:40:57):
murmuring that, whispering that, or months already. The idea that
that Durant has already signaled through his representation, that has
signaled to the Knicks that he's coming. Now, that's all
well and good, and people around the league can believe that,
and some of them may believe that it's that it's
all but a certainty. But it's still up to Kevin
Durant to make that call, and that decision point is
(01:41:20):
still five months away. So when it comes to the
Knicks gamble, it is a gamble you can't know for sure,
you know, you know, as I wrote last week, it's
it's either a spectacular gamble that if it fails it
could end up with everybody getting fired, or it's not
a risk at all, because they already know what the
outcome is, in which case the greatest case of tampering
(01:41:41):
in NBA history potentially. But that is how the league
works that I'm not casting aspersions at the Knicks. Everybody
tampers in this league. And if they've already been assured
he's coming and they made the move because of that,
well you know that, then they've made a wise move. Um,
here's something I don't know. If you've been asked, Doug
atli Show, Fox Sports trad you mentioned every buddy tampers
in this league. I can tell you that there's lots
(01:42:03):
of small market teams that are ticked. I think you
know that, and then you look at I talk to
NFL people are like, this is a joke. I can
imagine trying to run a franchise or your best player
just you know, basically demands and hold your your whole
franchise hostage so he can get to a bigger, better
market and play with his his friends. Doesn't some of
this fall in the leadership or lack thereof, of Adam Silver.
(01:42:28):
That's a complicated question. I mean, you know, the Anthony
Davis situation, like other situations before, where stars have kind
of run their course in a particular market, and they
want out when you signal it early. And in Anthony
Davis's case, it's a year, you know, it's a year
and a half away from his his free agency. But
it's only you know, you know, months away from when
(01:42:48):
he gets down to the final year of his contract,
when that that clock starts ticking. You could say the
reverse that Listen, this isn't about a power play. It
just moved me where I want to go. This is
also about him telling that the Pelicans listen, I not
gonna resign. I'm not going to sign the extension this summer.
I'm not going to sign in forre agency in move
me now and get something for me. He's it's to
their benefit. Um, that's a fair point of view. And
(01:43:12):
now to the other part of it, of going trade
me where I want to go and only where I
want to go, Well, he doesn't really have that choice.
I mean, his his campus is bringing to bear all
the pressure and all the manipulation that they can. But
at the end of the day, if the Pelicans think
the best deal is gonna be Boston on July one,
or you know, Utah tomorrow, for all we know, then
(01:43:33):
they can make that deal and Daviny Davis will have
to go there and at least serve out the remainder
of his contract. So I don't I don't think it's
some major crisis in that regard the fact that a
lot of superstars have moved from smaller markets to larger
markets or destination markets over the last ten years. It's
something I've written about multiple times. I do think it's
a big picture concern for the league, but it's not
one you can do much about. Ultimately. These guys have,
(01:43:55):
you know, have agency, they have control over their careers,
and they you know what they served out their contract,
can go where they want to go. Howard back joining
us in the Doug Otlips Show on Fox Sports Radio.
Um Nick right joined me earlier in the hour and
he said, hey, look, Lebron did this last year. They
had right before the trade deadline, he shot down on them,
they got blown out, they changed personnel, and they turned
(01:44:17):
around and and make the NBA Finals. Is that what
this feels like in l A to you? No, no, no, no, no.
I mean, I like, I understand where Nick is going
with that, and I love Nick, but that you know,
Lebron when he shut down on a Cleveland team in
the middle of the season, on a team that's already
been to the finals a bunch and granted that team
was kind of you know, it's kind of a mess,
but we we knew somewhat what to expect from the Cavaliers. Um,
(01:44:42):
in general, there was a little bit more of an
established identity there. There's no established identity with this Laker team.
You know, two thirds of this roster just got there
at the same time the Lebron did last summer. They've
got a bunch of weird fitting pieces. I mean, look,
there's there's no sense that this team is ready to
make any kind of upward move of than maybe make
the playoffs as a low seed and you know, just
(01:45:03):
try to give somebody a run in the first round. Um,
there's just not enough talent there, and that's been apparent
from day one. They signed Lebron, but they couldn't get
the second Star. They got a bunch of you know,
you know, interesting pieces and you know, Rondol and Stevenson,
JaVale mcgie, all these guys, but they don't have a
complete team. They don't have enough shooting. They're trying to
remedy that by by bringing in Reggie Bullock. They don't
know shooting. Their bigs are flawed at best. And so
(01:45:25):
that you've got this three man rotation of of McGee
and and Tyson Chandler and zobach Um. It's not a
complete team. They've got the greatest player in the game,
but he's been hurt and it's not a complete team.
And Lonzo Ball is out, So the Lakers are gonna
be hard pressed, you know, just to make the playoffs.
Do you think that the Anthony Davis trade does get
consummated before tomorrow's deadline. I do not. I don't think
(01:45:48):
there's any reason for the Pelicans to do it. Frankly,
um and I never have thought they should. Uh. There
there are two options that are out there that you
need to at least have in front of you as
a possibility. One is, of course the Celtics, with the
possibility of getting to Jalen sb Jayson Tatum and others
and picks, and you can't do that until July one
(01:46:08):
because of you know, weird cap wrinkles, Um. And the
other one is Zion Williamson, if you believe and and
there's a huge debate around the league about whether Zion
Williamson is really gonna be a star in this league.
But if you believe he is, and if you want
him to possibly be a target in an Anthony Davis trade,
and then you have to at least wait to see
who gets his draft rights in the lottery, So we
(01:46:29):
won't know that until May. So if I'm the Pelicans,
I want those options on the table. Even if I
don't pursue them ultimately, or or or make a deal
for the Zion pick or for with the Celtics, I
still want those on the table. I want all my
options available. Because you're trading one of the best players
in the NBA, I understand that, But I mean, like
the Lakers trade is a hershel Walker trade, right, Like
(01:46:52):
you might be mad. I think Kusma is a good
Do I think Kuzma is a star? A superstar? No?
Do I think Alonso is a superstar? No? Um, I'm
not a huge brandon ingraand guy. But you get all
three of them, some draft picks and cap relief and
you're not terrible. You still have Drew Holiday. Like that's
that's pretty good. That's pretty good basketball team considering you know,
like what are your alternatives. You're gonna get Jayson Tatum
(01:47:14):
and and a pick like that doesn't know it thought
it wouldn't be it wouldn't be Jason Tatum at a pick.
It would probably be Jason Tatum and possibly Jaylen Brown
or Marcus Smart, maybe Gordon Hayward. Uh. And they've got
multiple picks, and Celtics have all their own picks available,
two of them, plus they've got the Memphis pick, the
Clippers pick. Tell me, somebody tell me, somebody tell me
somebody that's come away doing business with Danny Ainge that's
(01:47:36):
been like, man, we killed it in that trade. I'm
not saying that that's the case. I'm saying that if
you want the best possible package in front of you,
and if you believe, as most of the league believes,
that Jayson Tatum is better than any single player the
Lakers have to offer, then you wait and you make
that deal instead. If he becomes available, well you know,
(01:47:57):
and and and remember like like the Celtics, okay, that
means that they keep Kyrie, because we don't know if
they keep Kyrie. Right, you know that the cell the
Celtics have been ultimately confident that he's gonna stay now.
Kyrie is a strange personality and unpredictable and it's hard
to understand, you know, how to read anything he might say.
But the Celtics still believe he's staying. And if he's
(01:48:19):
staying and he and Anthony Davis are pals, then that's
the incentive for Anthony as to want to stay after
the trade and to sign an extension. Doug Golam Shore
here on Fox Sports Trader that that's the voice of
Howard Beck, senior NBA writer for Bleach Report, and lost
in all of the nonsense that happened in Indy is
what happened when I woke up this morning and I
was like, wait, the Philadelphia seventy six ers just overpaid
(01:48:40):
for Tobias Harris. But like you had Tobias Harris to
the other four starters they already have. Those are pretty
good pieces. What do we think now about the seventies
sixers who have still struggled even though more talented, struggled
to adjust chemistry wise to having Jimmy Butler. Yeah, and
my concern with this deal and let's and adding Tobias Harris,
(01:49:01):
it's a position of need. They now have a one
of the best starting fives in the NBA that that
their benches is really woeful, but the starting five is excellent.
And if you mix and match with bench pieces and
so you you know, you always have a couple of
your stars on the floor, Um, you'll be all right.
And you know, look, Tobias Harris is a borderline All
Star this year and it is a really good player.
(01:49:23):
And I think it's a great trade for them in
that regarden. In the short term, it strengthens them in
their bid too to win the East. And you know,
the future is uncertain with Jimmy Butler being a free
agent with there have been you know there there there
have been some tensions there and you don't you don't
know for certain that he's coming back. So what I
think it did ultimately in the short term it made
(01:49:43):
them strong enough to potentially get past Boston and Milwaukee
in Toronto to win the East. That's obviously the short
term goal. And then beyond that, on July one, if
Jimmy Butler decides team wants to go somewhere else, or
you decide this organization, you know what, this was just
a little bit too much rama for us. You can
resign Tobias Harris instead, and you've got him to go
(01:50:03):
with Ben Simmons and Joel EmpId and JJ Reddick. So
I think it gave them more options, more flexibility, and
and again in the short term and makes them stronger. Fascinating,
fascinating times in the NBA. All right, Well, I know
you're busy over the next twenty three hours or so.
Thanks so much for spending some time with this, Howard,
absolutely thanks for having me. Howard Beck Bleacher Report joined
the show. Let's get you Dan Fire. I didn't like
(01:50:25):
that trade for the Sixers last night. I like Tobias
Harris as a player, but you know, a friend of
the show, Landry Shammitt is actually one of the few
guys that can actually shoot for the seventy sixers, and
he's no longer there. So well, they're they're clearly trying
to win now right when this moment they trusted the
process long enough. Sure, but I still think that their
weakness is shooting. Yeah, and they and Tobias Harris is
(01:50:49):
a decent three point shooter, but Shamut also provided that
you Yes, look, they spent a lot for the now,
whereas the Clippers got rid of that. You know, got
got rid of some some stuff and continue to clear
out space and got some got unprotected draft picks that
are value some other deals. Before the NBA trade deadline
(01:51:09):
tomorrow at three o'clock Eastern time, Heating Sons made a
swap Miami, sending Tyler Johnson and Wayne Ellington the Phoenix
for Ryan Anderson. Ellington is expected to be let go
by the Sun's so he could sign with the contender.
We'll see what the market is for Wayne Ellington. Bucks
traded center Thought Maker to the Pistons for forward Stanley Johnson.
Maker hasn't played since demanding a trade request out of Milwaukee.
(01:51:32):
Now he's on his way to Detroit. Raptors traded Malachi
Richardson to the Sixers. Forecast considerations no La Marcus Aldridge
tonight for the Spurs. They want to have to Mark
de Rosen either as they faced the Golden State Warriors
and just as you were talking with Howard Beck, The
Boston Globe says the Pelicans reached out to the Celtics
wanting assurances impossible packages for Anthony Davis. After July one,
some news in the NFL. Falcons getting nervous by the
(01:51:54):
way who's that The Plicans. Yeah, they're gonna take the deal.
The Falcons have released forty three year old kicker Matt
Bryant's he could be signing with the Buccaneers. According to
an ESPN report, Patriots wide receivers coach Chat O'sha is
the new offensive coordinator from the Miami Dolphins when the
NFL says they're looking into the alleged domestic incident involving
Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown. Last month, San Francisco Giants
(01:52:16):
reportedly met with free agent OL fielder Brice Harper. The
report from the MLB networks as Harper has also met
with other teams as the price tag may have dropped
for his services. Will be back to the Doug Gottlib
Show in ten seconds. But first a word from Farmers,
(01:52:47):
you know lost and all this stuff. Is that the
interesting part about the Clippers, like they have so many
parts that you like, they have calf space, they've got
young talent, they're well, they're coached by a coach at
one NBA championship. Um, you know, they have Rex Calumanians
their defensive guy. He was he was in Toronto the
last couple years before that, he was in Oklahoma City,
(01:53:09):
and you track where he's been. They've had great defenses.
Jerry West, Los Angeles Staples Center. They've got so many
things going for him. But what we'll find out this
summer's if if the Clipper thing is real, Right, don't
don't don't tell me you're pregnant, show me, showed me
(01:53:30):
the baby. That's what it feels like with the Clippers. Yeah,
they have an they have an owner who's all in
and just just wants to win. You know, Tobias Harris's
dad had a great statement. You know, we loved our
time in l A first class organization. YadA, YadA, YadA.
Everybody's saying all this great stuff. All right, you got
(01:53:51):
all this money. You think they think they're getting Kawhi Leonard.
Let's see, because no one has ever chosen the Clippers
over the Lakers before, has never happened, And if it happens,
it's a massive seat change in Los Angeles in the NBA.
You know, it's it's big talk. You can talk to talk,
(01:54:11):
but you gotta walk the walk. I feel like if
if the Boston Glowes reporting that the Pelicans picked up
the phone and called the Celtics to check in. Hey,
we we still we were still good? Are we still good?
We're still good? We're still good? Yep, oh yeah, sure,
we're still good. Yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah
yeah yeah, same stuff. We'll talk to you in the
(01:54:32):
off season. We're good. That to me signals the Pelicans
are like, you know what, this is a really good deal.
Two first round picks, you know, three NBA starters that
are all young under rookie club controls rookies. I about
to take the deal. That's why I guess, yes, Ramos,
(01:54:53):
if Magic Johnson pulled it from the table and they
do come back and say what you just did? They go, hey,
you know what, We're ready, w'na take that? Do think
Magic them do go ahead and just do it the
way it is. Do you think they pull some things
back and say, well, you know what, I think Magic
will do it as it is. But I would pull
it back. I just I thought I think it's over paying.
I would hold on to one of those. You don't
have a point guard. You don't have a point guard.
(01:55:15):
If you trade Rondo and you trade Alonzo and and
the reputation of Rondo is a lot better than the
player of Rondo. Rondo has been beaten up. He doesn't
finish the rim, he's never been able to shoot in
games um and even reputation wise, he's not a great defender. Well,
he led the league steals, that doesn't mean he's a
great defender. That means he's good to getting steals. But
(01:55:36):
I would I gotta have either him or Alonzo. So
I think it's giving up too much. And the other
problem is you run the risk if you trade for
Anthony Davis this year and you get rid of all
those guys, you might not make the playoffs. And now
that that first round pick becomes a really good pick
for the Pelicans, might not make the playoffs because right
(01:56:00):
now you're on the outside looking in. You still have
the Celtics twice, you got the seventies six ers, you
still had some games with the Warriors, like, you've got
a tough schedule and you're gonna have You're gonna have
like a whole new team you're putting together here at
mid season. And maybe Lebron and Anthony Davis are enough,
maybe they're not. Maybe they're not. It is fast. He's
(01:56:23):
gonna be fascinating to see. I think that's too much.
My my personal thought is that they're offering too much.
But I also don't think that, no matter how much
I don't, I don't know. I just think that that
that's what the Lakers have said. This is our limit.
What you never do when you're negotiating, You never get
to your limit, because there's no such thing as last
(01:56:46):
and final, no such thing as last and final. I
like that the Lakers walked away, but I thought they
went too far before they walked away. And I like
that the Pelicans are gonna sit here and let's let
it take a breath for a second. But last night,
to me, I felt like that this thing is over.
(01:57:06):
There's no that you cannot put that genie back in
the bottom. Oh hey, guys, we're all friends now, we
love you again. Still a Laker? Huh okay, we'll see
it work Monday, all right, Trade deadlines upon us. We'll
get the latest next. Be sure to catch live editions

February fourteenth. What gift you getting to the one you love? Say?
Four and a half carrot total weight diamond Hard Pennant
(01:57:50):
now only to show Cubans Boss this Valentine's Day at
Hellsburg Diamonds. The press, Dan Buyer, what do you got,
ma man? Well, Doug, we do have a bunch again
if you if you missed it, we just talked about
it a little while ago. But the Boston Globe is
saying that the Pelicans reached out to the Celtics earlier
this week wanting assurances on possible packages for Anthony Davis
(01:58:14):
after July one. The only way that they'd be able
to make a deal with the Celtics before tomorrow's trade
deadline would be to trade Kyrie Irving. That's not happening.
The report says the Celtics were reluctant to make promises,
but made it clear to the Pelicans that no one
on their roster is off limits. M that's not really
a promise though, right, It's like, sure, we would trade
(01:58:37):
Jason Tatum. It all depends on what you trade back for.
You know, Like there's lots of guys that I would
consider trading and wouldn't be off limits, but what do
we want back in return? Yeah, and and Kyrie Irving
wouldn't be a part of one of those pieces, but
the point being, yeah, everyone else is available. Uh. Kyrie
Irving obviously would be a free agent this offseason. The
(01:58:58):
Heat traded Wayne Allen, didn't Tyler Johnson to the Sons
for Ryan Anderson, one of the few deals that were
done today. Ellington expected to be waived by Phoenix, allowing
him to join a contender. Yeah, will he joined the Lakers?
Will he join the Sixers? What team that needs shooters?
Will he join? Yeah? There's a bunch of teams that
could could use him, So you know, the Lakers are possibility.
(01:59:21):
We just talked about the Sixers deficiencies with shooting. They
should be first in line to try to bring in
Ellington to go along with J. J. Reddick and now
Tobias Harris. Nick's are the most valuable franchise in the NBA.
DOUG This according to Forbes valued at four. Yeah, there
it is. The Lakers are second, with the Golden State
Warriors third. You guys want to take a guess at
(01:59:42):
who's the least valuable franchise in the NBA? Yeah, I'll
take a guess, all right? Uh shoot, hold on, well
let me think here. Um, I'm gonna go with the Timberwolves.
All right, John Romas, do you want to sack Kings? No,
they got the arena, they got the new arenga. But okay,
(02:00:04):
and and Ryan Music. I'm gonna go with Grizzlies. It's
the Memphis Grizzly. Doug was close, Minnesota's seven. John was
way off. The Kings are the most valuable franchise, so
right in the middle. Now, I don't know the calculation.
Do they count if you own your arena or not? Uh?
(02:00:26):
I think so because if they do, then obviously and
I don't know the Knicks. I know Madison Square Garden
is owned by the Madison Square Garden like corporation whatever.
They put a billion dollars into that building just to
I mean that the land, that land alone is that's
worth more than so it could it couldn't count the arena.
I don't know, but that that to me is location, location, location, right. Yeah,
(02:00:48):
the fourth, the Bulls are fourth, Celtics are fifth, Clippers
are ninth on this list at two point two billion,
So they're more than what Steve Balmer bought them for
just a few years ago, to one billion. I thought
it was too I thought it was actually just right
at two and that's what and he over he overpaid
really at the time. I mean, look, the guys who
(02:01:09):
bought the Golden State Warriors bought them four what was
it it was It was like four hundred and fifty
thousand dollars and fifty million, and now it's worth a
couple of billion. So the the Bucks are at one
point three five billion, and they were bought for half
of that and they had to promise not to move. Yep,
(02:01:29):
doubled in value. The NFL says they're looking into the
alleged domestic incident involving Steelers wide receiver Antonio Brown. Last month,
Brown wasn't charge store arrested in the incident in Florida,
where he was accused of pushing down the mother of
his daughter, causing her to fall and hurt her wrist.
But another story involving Antonio Brown soon to be former
Pittsburgh Steeler and possibly former NFL player Antonio Brown, Right,
(02:01:50):
like there was one last offseason that didn't rise to
something one to this offseason, like what are you doing? Dude?
Are you still there? But wasn't arrested, so you know,
we get the benefit of the doubt. The l A.
Times headline after Super Bowl fifty three said Lambs not
Rams after they fell to the Patriots on Sunday, The
paper Today posted some letters for from readers criticizing that headline,
(02:02:15):
basically saying, Hey, the Rams were in the game the
whole time. It wasn't like they laid down. It's a headline,
you idiots. Excuse me, jesus, what's the matter with people?
I saw a woman post online that you want to
boycott the l A. Times because they put ram Lambs
not Rams or whatever. Like it's a headline. It's not
(02:02:35):
even all that offensive. And is it that accurate? Probably not,
but you know they could have put Goffel John i uns.
John Ramos, by the way, was very upset yesterday with
all the Rams hate or the Rams criticism. Uh, since
(02:02:55):
Super Bowl fifty three, So what do you mean? What
what do you mean about john You know, just people
taking shots at him, right, Johnny been taking shots of
the Rams and all I said to him the second
best team in the NFL. So in your face. Greg
Ciano is gonna be the new defensive coordinator of the
New England Patriots. Huh, hitting hit uh and finally dug.
(02:03:20):
The Durham Bulls will read brand as the Durham Lollygaggers
for one game this upcoming season. Can I get a hat?
What is the hat? A guy in a couch? You know,
I don't know. It's it's an honor of bull Durham. Yeah,
and the game will be played June, which is the
thirty feet anniversary of the movie's release. Have you seen
(02:03:44):
just parts of it? What's the matter with you? What?
I don't know? Fast? Oh they are okay? Out the press,
bread through your eyes, through your eyes. Nuke luelus. Another
new league record, another new league record. All right, hit
(02:04:05):
the mascot anyway. I got some college basketball picks for you.
I'll tweet out later on. Couldn't be any worse than
my pick of the Lakers to win last night. My
bad only missed it by like forty five points. Just
just off by this much. Hey, look, if you miss
the line by a point or by forty five points,
it doesn't matter. Right, there's you, You're, You're, there's your
