(00:43):

player to help you stay ahead of the game. Put
their experience in the play at Farmers dot com. It's
being called the biggest free agent contract in American sports history.
UH there are some discussions as whether or not that's
a uh an accurate term, regardless of which, ten years,
(01:03):
three hundred million dollars Many Machado has apparently agreed to
terms with the San Diego Padres League, sources tell ESPNS
Jeff Passon earlier today. For some context, UM John Carlos
Stanton signed a three five million dollar thirteen year extension
that was backloaded that did have some opt outs in
(01:24):
it with the Marlins. He's obviously now a product of
the Yankees. There's many Machado, there's a Rod. It was
a ten year to seventy five deal. That was the
second big deal that he signed, and of course a
Rod's first deal was ten for two fifty. Should be
pointed out that a Rod's two ridiculous contracts with the
Rangers and then the Yankees who later traded for him,
(01:45):
and then the Yankees in that extension after an opt
out resulted in just one World Series title and two
p E D suspensions. John Carlos Stanton's no World Series
just yet and the Marlins he left behind were blown
up out. First, I'm gonna give you a kind of
the positives to it, because I'm not gonna sit here
and be Debbie Downer, because I do I understand the
(02:07):
Padres perspective on this. They have, by all accounts, the
best or second best farm system in baseball. They have
been loading up for the past couple of years, purposefully
losing and saving money, with the exception of Eric Hosper
last year and Manny Machado this year, and while the
Diamondbacks have decided to punt, the Rockies appear to be
(02:31):
probably a year away from likely blowing things up when
they lose Nolan Arnado. It feels like a foregone conclusion
that he comes back to one of the two Southern
California teams. Um, the Giants are gonna lose Bruce Bocci
and last year had their worst season in anyone's recent memory.
(02:52):
Like the Padres are quietly building towards next year, but
they're they're always a year away from being a year away.
This year they actually appeared to be a year away.
But and this is a big butt. As much as dude,
I'm not turned down three hundred million dollars or ten
years to live in San Diego, America's find a city
(03:14):
like there's a there's a lot of there's a lot
of a lot worse ways to end out your days.
When he becomes thirty four, thirty five, thirty six years old, right, like, man,
sign me up for that San Diego with two hundred
and fifty mill in the bank, How do I Where
do I sign? It's like where in San Diego to
(03:38):
you live? Well, with that kind of money, you can
live in multiple places, right by a condo downtown, right
next to the stadium. Buy one out in Coronado and
you know what, just for giggles, go up the road
a little bit, maybe into Lohia, or even further north
if you want to Escondido. Sure, by all of them.
(04:00):
But buyer beware, buyer beware. Remember part of what you
get the contract for is not just production. He's going
to be, along with Eric Hosmer, of course, is part
of a World Series culture in Kansas City. He's going
to be the face of that team. And this is
(04:24):
a guy who was just with the l A Dodgers
in the playoffs. A chance to show the world how
great he is, how good he is under pressure, how
good a leader he can be. And it could not
have possibly gone any worse. Right, Remember, I'm not I'm
(04:44):
not Johnny Hustle between stepping on the foot of first
baseman when he ran down the line or not running
hard or a laying groundballs like what did I miss?
Many Machado. And it's a small sample size, but didn't
get two in the World Series after two nine six
(05:05):
in the NLCS, after one seventy six in the n
L d S. Right same guy, right, same guy he did.
He did have three postseason home runs this year, and
this is with in sixteen games. He had three home runs,
but he wasn't on base a ton. He struck out.
(05:26):
He struck out a lot. You know, he struck out seven,
six and five times, and he started at eighteen times
eighteen times this year. He struck out in sixteen playoff games.
Numbers are not good, but it was more than that.
It was the way in which he carried himself. It
(05:48):
was the way in which he The Dodgers needed a shortstop.
Corey Sager's was there shortstop of the future. And he's
undergone Tommy John surgery. No one knows, truthfully if he'll
be able to come back and play short or end
up playing second base. They needed a shortstop. The Dodgers
have money for days. He had a golden opportunity. And
(06:09):
anybody can excuse and go, you know, look, small sample size.
How Barry bonds back when he's in Pittsburgh, couldn't hit
in the postseason. He gets to San Francisco, granted, helped
out by Royd's, and he becomes a monster. Once the
sample size get larger, gets larger. Ultimately, your talent rise
to the toime. Mike Trout wasn't good in his one
postseason series, but to not get an offer from the Dodgers,
(06:33):
to have a level of toxicity because of how you
purport yourself and that guy is going to be your leader.
That guy's gonna make three million dollars for ten years.
That that that's like the Odell Beckham Jr. Extension, Like
(06:53):
the Giants are supposed to be surprised that he's acting
like it, that he's acted like a pestilant fool after
the game. A big contract, Like look, whether he plays
short or placed third or whatever the first five years,
as long as there's no injury, you can expect him
to be productive. The guy can really play. The guy
(07:14):
can really play. Um He's a four time All Star,
he's never finished in the top three and m v
P balloting. He's never actually hit over over three his
OBI the high for O b P was earlier in
the year in Baltimore. Outside of that, he's not a
(07:35):
super high on base guy. Like San Diego, what the
hell did you buy? Just because you have money doesn't
mean you need to spend it. And I get the listen,
we gotta get fans hope the reason to come to
come to the ballpark. But that's not how you build
a winner. You're in the Pictures Park and you gotta
(07:58):
hit or a guy who hasn't in super consistent Sure,
he'll had thirty five home runs in Baltimore. That translates
into high twenties in San Diego. Like, and he's a
he's a non leader, he's Johnny Hustle. I'm always cautious
of signing somebody who was with a team that didn't
(08:21):
offer him a deal. I remember when Matt Flynn was
a Matt Flynn was a free agent. Matt Flynn through
was it five or six touchdown passes in his one start,
the last game he was starting for the Green Bay Packers.
I think he had five touchdown pass against the Detroit Lions.
(08:45):
It was six, was six six, It was like a
club record six And his head coach went to be
head coach of the Miami Dolphins. Do you guys remember
this named Joe Philbin, and Joe Philbin needed a quarter
back and he did not offer Matt Flynn a deal,
and then Seattle signed him to like a three year
(09:05):
deal and he got beat out in training camp by
Russell Wilson, who was the third round traffick. Now, look,
part of this is everyone misevaluated Russell Wilson. He's gonna
be a Hall of Fame quarterback. Guy's a total stud.
But part of it is if if Joe Philbin, who
coat was in the in the quarterback room every day
with Matt Flynn, who is a great guy and needs
(09:26):
a quarterback in his first job, doesn't bring Matt Flynn
with him, tells you all need to know if the
l A Dodgers, who have boatloads of money could buy
the world ten times over, needed a shortstop, had Manny
Machado and did not get involved in any sort of
(09:48):
bidding war for a twenty year old who's not yet
in his prime. Doesn't that tell you everything you need
to know, doesn't it? I mean, this is this is
what new money? Does? You got found money? Like? Oh,
gotta spend it, do you? Because the two questions you
(10:12):
have when you give somebody this sort of deal, the
two questions you have one I guess maybe three one
how how good actually is he? To? What type of
leader is he gonna be? And three a ten year deal? Like, look, man,
I've I've signed a five year deal, and I have
(10:35):
an insatiable work ethic for more. But it was not
for three hundred million dollars. Like, what's it gonna look
like at the back end of that deal. There's no
d h in San Diego. He hasn't shown himself to
be a guy who's going to kill himself in order
to win. And once he gets into his thirties, Oh,
(10:55):
a lot of tread off the tires from a child.
Oh it's a no brainer, right anyway says, well, you
gotta get used in that winning. It's not like Robbie Cano,
who was in New York for the entirety of his
career and he had to go to Seattle, be completely
off the radar. Machado has been in Baltimore, which is
kind of off the playoff radar. He's been with teams
that weren't necessarily designed to win. And oh yeah, by
(11:19):
the way, Machado's Machado's offseason starts at the end of September. Now,
I don't think it rubs. I don't think that's the
worst thing in the world for a dude. Hey man,
do you want to play a hundred and fifty some
odd games in the world's in the country's greatest city
with the country's best weather, in a beautiful ballpark, and
be the guy and make thirty million dollars a year
like there's a lot worse. And oh yeah, by the way,
(11:41):
your off season is likely going to start before anybody
else's offseason. Cool, Where do I sign up for that?
I'm talking about the Padres. And it doesn't even have
to do with the money. When you're bidding against the
White Sox, not the Cubs, when you're bidding against yourselves,
not the Dodgers, not the Yankees, not teams that understand
(12:04):
what it takes to build a culture of winning, that
is a major, major risk. And then you factor in
what in the last five years of this deal gonna
look like. When granted Pools was a little bit older,
but look at the last five years of the pool
Holes contract just up the I five from San Diego.
(12:25):
So I just think it's fascinating. It's gonna be fascinated
to see what happens with the Padres. Who's who's whose
time and relevancy exists between now and the first month
of the season when they'll get off to a slow
start and people point out that they're designed to win
next year. They've always been a year away from being
(12:47):
a year away. Now they're just simply a year away.
But you wonder what type of leadership a guy will
exude when he gets rewarded for the act that he
put forth last year in the playoffs eight seven and
seven nine nine Foxes. The phone number at got Leaves Show.
At got Leave Show is the Twitter handle. Let's turn
our attention the NBA up coming Next insider Chris Haynes
(13:10):
joins the show. The Lakers apparently are concerned about Lebron
James ability to push them to the playoffs coming off
this groin injury. Is that concern really just a sign
of Hey, Lebron James has lost the step and they're
blaming They're gonna blame it on an injury. I'll ask him.
He joins us next. For a car landing on a
(13:31):
roof to a car landing in the pool, We've covered it.
Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers under
written my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products
not available in every state. Car shopping can be confusing
(13:53):
with terms like dealer price, list price, an invoice price.
True Car shows what other people paid for the car
you want. You can recognize a good when you're ready
to buy a new or used car, Visit True Car
and enjoy more confident car buying experience. There's a report
out of l A that the Lakers are concerned about
(14:16):
Lebron James Groin and that health and whether or not
he's gonna be healthy enough to push them on this
playoff push. We'll get to Chris Haynes in a second
more Amina Machado's contract, which he signed or agreed to
terms apparently with the San Diego Padres in just one
hour with the World Series champ A J. Prazynski White
Sox felt like they they had him, and they're they're
(14:38):
trying to kind of gather themselves. Of course, a J
won a World Series playing catcher for the White Sox.
Get his sense of whether or not this this deal
makes sense for for the Padres and what the expectations
can be for the Padres, what this means to the market.
We'll get to that upcoming in about an hour. Chris
Haynes joins the senior NBA Insider for Yahoo Sports at
(14:58):
Chris B. Haynes course has a really good podcast where
he sits down with some of the elite players in
the NBA called Posted Up with Chris Haynes. Chris, when
I read the Lakers story, I take it as they're
watching him move around and he does not have the
explosiveness and is standing outside shooting threes. His field goals
(15:19):
after injury have been threes. It seems like maybe they're
trying to make the injuries the excuse. Is it possible
that Lebron has lost the step and this is the
Lakers way of noticing it. I don't know that he's
lost the stepped up, but thanks for having me on.
But I don't know if it's necessary he's lost the step.
I still think he he hasn't gotten his legs under him,
(15:40):
you know, since coming back from this injury. You know,
this was a Israel I kept him out from the
significant amount of time, the most time he's been out
during his career. And uh, you know, I don't think
he's come back a hunch. I don't think he came back.
I still think he's you know, working his way through um.
But on me, does valid you know, if if that's true,
(16:01):
there there's valid there should be valid concerns the organization
for your your main player, who you're playing. It's only
the amount of money to Um, a guy who is
I believe thirty four, So he's getting up there in
eggs and so yeah, I mean, there's definitely reasons to
be concerned. But I think right now I wouldn't put
too much stock into how many threes he's suiting right now.
(16:25):
I will I would like to wait, probably not a
couple of weeks, just to see Um if his game
returns to form. When I mean for I'm talking about
you know, the way he was playing before the injury.
So I just I can't just yeah, I can't really
engage it right now. That's the big question with the
entire team, right like they were playing great basketball, especially defensively,
lacked a little bit of shot making. Whatever he gets hurt,
(16:46):
you know, Rondo gets hurt, Kuzma is hurt for a
little bit. Now, Alonzo balls hurt. You're at the aulcar game.
You know, all these guys. What's the sensor in the league,
whether or not the Lakers can figure things out in time?
You know, there's a couple of things. So obviously we
have to see if Lebron James is going to return
to his true dominant form, which you know, if history
(17:08):
is any indicator, then I think he will. Um. And
so then if he will, then I would have to
think the players will elevate their game, uh to get
themselves back into contention. Now, the other part is just
the relationship dynamic of how all that stuff played out
during the trade theirline right or is everything cool in
(17:29):
that regard? Is the locker room okay? Um? Have they spoke?
Have things been mended? Um? That's the other part of
this whole situation that I think it's goes overlooked. It's like, okay, yes,
the trade, theirline has passed, but those players are still there.
You know, you know, you have to imagine that they
didn't they didn't take too kindly of their names being
(17:51):
out there every single day as part of trade packages.
And you know, and everybody's pointing that Lebron is being
the one who's maneuvering. Thing is we know that that's
not true, but you know that's that's the perception. So
you want to you know, first first and foremost as health,
getting everybody back Lonzo Ball is expected of the terms
put the start the second half of the season. Um,
(18:12):
and then it's just getting the relationships help. You're getting
that point and that's I think that's what we need.
Don't look forward to all right, speaking of relationships, UM,
it felt like this is kind of relationship and future
team building one on one in Charlotte. But my way
of looking at it is like, look, these guys. They
have cell phones, they can text, FaceTime each other, whatever, whatever,
(18:34):
far more off camera than on camera. Is there anything
we should make of anything we saw in terms of
relationships and tampering for the future based upon how they
acted in Charlotte? I mean, come on, like, you know
these guys. If that's really tampering, then there's tampering year round,
every single day. I mean, I hope fans don't think
(18:57):
that the only time these players actually communicators when they
played each other and see each other like this. This
goes on. It It's always talks about players. Players recruit
all throughout the year, all throughout the season. You can't
stop that. At the same way you can go go
from the executive standpoint, there's a reason why why UM
(19:19):
free agent contracts are agreed to before July one. That's
supposed to be tampering. That's supposed to be against the rules.
So let's let's you know, let's let's not act like
this is only a player issue. This is something you know,
this is something executives do, owners do all the time.
You know, deals are agreed to before July one, which
(19:39):
means that executives and agents were talking well and long
before that. So I don't, you know, let you know,
let's not make this be a hit, a criptolal, hypocritical situation.
It goes on across all sides, and you know, that's
just something you can't and particularly with the players, that's
just something you can't crack down on. They have relationship,
(20:00):
they talked all throughout the year. It happens, not just all.
I would probably think All Star weekend they probably don't
do it at all because they've been doing it all
you long, you know, so they probably giving each other
up doing All Star Weekend. Chris Haines joining us fro
Yah who Sports Doug Gli Show, Fox Sports Radio, then
Anthony Davis after after he was widely criticized for the
(20:22):
shoulder injury and leaving the arena, and and and whether
or not he actually wants to be in New Orleans.
Then says, hey, look, I go to twenty nine teams,
the only team obviously not being the Pelicans. What happens
to Anthony Davis here the second half of the season,
Like did they play him? Do they play him until
the fourth quarter? Like there's there's still a lot of
ambiguity as to what happens next. This is unprusted. I
(20:46):
can't recall I've been coming to leave, you know, close
to ten years. I can't recall a player ever saying
while under contract and during the season saying that I
was going to play for point on other teams, accept
the current team that I'm on. I I's unprecedented, man, Like,
(21:07):
I don't know what I don't And for New Orleans viewpoint,
I can't see how the league will will try to
force New Orleans or why they would try to force
New Orleans to play anti Davis. He clearly has his
mind elsewhere, and he's talking you know, it's called it
(21:27):
what it is. You know, he's talking bad about the team.
He doesn't want to be there. I don't see. I
just don't see how this relationship can continue on the
second half. I really do think that they the league
has to allow New Orleans to do what's best for
them in this situation because they have to protect the
asset that they're they're going to most likely, you know,
(21:49):
trade away in the summer. So this is where I
kind of feel for the team in the situation. Usually
I'm all for players and empowerment, but you know, the
warrans have to at the best package possible and playing
the guy out there at thirty and thirty five minutes
and and Anthony Davis has an injury history, it's just
not wise, it's not smart. So I would think that
(22:11):
the league will kind of side with the New Orleans
in this situation for the second half. Chris Haines, Yeah,
who Sports jo U s Doug gotlip Show, You're on
Fox Sports Radio. What's really going on in Boston? You
know what? I think? I think what what what happened was,
you know, Brass Stevens. I think he's a phenomenal exit
and those coach I think he's at the top of
(22:31):
this craft as it pertends to that um. And I
think when you look at last year's team, I equated
to a college team where there was guys with not
real star egos. There wasn't really a true definitive star
and it was like it was it was like Brass
Stevens was back in college. And now you add Kyrie
Irvy who was a superstarters league, you add Gordon Hayward
(22:53):
who was an all starters league, and there they both
have something to prove because the Boston Celtics played so
well without him, so they got something to prove as
the why. You know, Kyley wants to showcase that he's
still that player. Gordon Hayward wants to get back to
the format, you know, after that injury. And so now
Brad steven actually has egos to deal with. And one
(23:14):
thing about the NBA coach exce os. You could be
a great exos coach could be out of the the league
in two to three years. At this level, you gotta
know how to manage egos and that gotta know how
to communicate. And I think that's what Brad Stevens has
failed thus far. So you add all that all, you know,
all of those different dynamics, and I think that's why
we're seeing Boston Celtics, you know, kind of struggle. I
(23:35):
still think at the end of the day, that they
will find some level of consistency and be a true
Eastern Conference final threat. But I just think those are
some of the different dynamics that Brad Stevens had to
deal with us far that kind of gone in the situation.
What's your general sense of KD You have relationship Chris
Hayes joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show here on
Fox Sports. Ready if you haven't download his podcast called
(23:56):
Posted Up with Chris Haynes, You've You've done one of
the ones everybody talks about with with Kevin durant Um,
he I mean, super interesting guy wins a wins an
All Star Game m v P, which doesn't matter in
the grand scheme of things, But I do think to him,
like he does, he kind of wants to make it
a point that, hey, whenever with Team USA, I was
the go to guy All Star Game, I'm the guy
(24:18):
who's the m v P NBA Finals when when it's
the best of the best, I'm the best. What what's
your sense of his level of happiness? Because there's been
moments this year where he seemed just uncomfortable, maybe even unhappy.
What's your sense of his level of happiness? Lovel of happiness.
I don't. I don't think it's at an all time
high right now. And I don't in saying that, I
(24:39):
don't think that there's any type of indictment on the
current team that he's on. He's just really a player,
and me and him go back and forth about this
all the time. He's just a player who really just
wants us but I mean us talks us about the media.
He wants us to just strictly talk about basketball, like
wait till the summertime to talk about anything business wise.
(25:01):
And you know, I think I gotta explained to him
that's not how that's not how our job works. There's
a lot of things that that's transpired throughout the course
of the season which lends us to start talking about
him in his next destination. I mean, the move that
the trade that New York made and trade and prezingis
that's that's because they're trying to make a play at
Kevin Durant. And so these questions come up, and he
(25:24):
gets bothered by that. He's uncomfortable by it. He's uncomfortable
with us asking his teammates about it, and so he's
not in the most comfortable state right now. But he's
never you know, regardless of whatever he went through with
Raymond or other issues he's had, it's never affected him
on the court. That's the safe saving. But you know,
he's definitely a person that doesn't like all the other
(25:46):
attention based on where he's going to go, the team
he could potentially go to, or you know, or leaving
a potential dynasty. That's that's just not you know, how
he gets around. Yeah, it's it's really interesting that That's
one of the points that I think he would love
more people to know, is like, look all of this
stuff Berner accounts and press conferences and things that go wrong,
(26:07):
not only does is he able to play through it
play well And he's the only guy on that team
that that he's been the most consistent guy in that team,
playing every game. But you know, Clay's had up and
down season. Steps had an up and down season, Draymond's
had an up and down season. De Marcus is just
now getting healthy and still isn't right. It is interesting
on how with all that off the court stuff, he
still is able to focus and and play exceptionally well
(26:30):
on the court. And I feel me like he alway
he always talks about. You know, we have our conversation.
He always talks about like the the youth and how
he feels like the youth of you know, of our
secucular basketball, how they're too soaked into social media and
looking to that stuff. But U and me saying that
(26:52):
right now. But one thing about KD, like the first,
first and four most, it's his crap. And that's that's
what he you know, he always talks about if if
my game is not on point, if I'm not putting
in the work, all all of this other stuff, nobody
cares about, you know, and so you know that that's
(27:13):
what he he has that downpack. You know that the
basketball stuff. You can't take that away from. He's one
of the hardest working players in this league to be
as skilled as he is. But you know, he does
have a problem with, you know, listening to media and
letting that get into it. But like I said, it
doesn't affect us play on the court. It's pretty pretty
amazing stuff. Chris, great stuff. Man. Can't wait to hear
(27:34):
the next pod when it drops, and appreciate you joining
us son Fox Sports Radio. Thanks man, I got my
my pod dropped actually today with Damian Little. He says
some really good stuff about why he hasn't asports trade
and uh, please encurage people to take it out. But
thanks for the platform, man, You take care. Yeah. Posted
up with Chris Haynes is the podcast. Look. We have
our own pod minds, different minds called All Ball, and
(27:54):
I give you some of my thoughts on the NBA.
Sometimes we have guests we els do college basketball. Chris
Lowry is my guest this week. He's assistant coach to
Kansas State, former head coach. It's Southing Illinois. We talked
about a lot of things, death of his son Um.
We talked about Um getting hired by his Ala monter,
getting fired by his alma mater, and what it would
mean for Kansas State to dethrone Kansas in the Big
(28:16):
Twelve that'll drop tomorrow. So I these the podcast stuff
is really fun, really interesting, and it's a different way
to hear from people as opposed to daily shows that
we do. Right here on the Doug Gallip Show, let
me get you to Dan Buyer. He's got his own
radio show Sunday Mornings. It's a good one. What do
you got Dan, Doug, We've got a lot. By the way,
John Ramos has his podcast going strong, the Exes and
(28:36):
Os podcast. We talked about a couple of weeks ago,
John talking about his ex girlfriends and Baltimore Orioles. So
there's just a soft launch lately, but there's more to come.
I'm sure he'll be. Ramos is not soft launch. He's
got he already impregnated his wife. There's nothing soft about John. John,
do you have any of the excerpts on the podcast
that Doug. We were able to grab some on a
(28:58):
day that you were out from John Ramo quickly. This
was one of the excerpts from John Ramos' Exes and
Os podcast. Seventh grade was not kind to me when
it came to dating. Let me tell you, puberty was
in full force. I was striking out left and right,
just like Chris Davis did in when he struck out
two hundred and nineteen times for the Orioles that season,
(29:20):
third most in MLB history. So there it is, Doug
combining his ex loves with the Baltimore Orioles. You like
that at all? You guys spent a lot of time
putting that together right before this. We actually had it
last week when I filled in for you. So very funny, Yeah,
very funny, especially if you know John. That's the whole
thing is, like, I know people know John. Oh. By
(29:43):
the way, Manny Machado seems to be not a former Oriol,
a former Dodger and a current Padre. The free agent
the San Diego Padres have reportedly agreed in principal on
a ten year contract where three hundred million dollars. Still
some things to take care of, some details in the contract,
plus Machado was yet take a physical with the Padres,
but multiple reports saying that the deal is pretty much done.
(30:04):
The White Sox reportedly we're going to give Machado more money,
but not more guaranteed money. They settle on the guaranteed
money three hundred million dollars for Maccado to go to
the Padres. Following a meeting in South Florida. The Steelers
and wide receiver Antonio Brown have agreed to part ways
this offseason. The NFL Network reports the Steelers aren't allowing
Brown and his agents the ability to seek a trade,
(30:25):
but did agree on a potential deal. Free agintendant Charles
Clayson to what you're deal with the Cardinals Carolina Hurricanes
owner Tom Dundon is the new chairman of the Alliance
of American Football after making a two hundred and fifty
million dollar investments in the new football league. Former Lakers
forward to Michael Beasley has signed a deal to play
in China. According to ESPN, didn't they did? They miss
the payments the American Alliance. They missed the payments in
(30:47):
the first Yes, there was a report that there was
a glitch, and then it had nothing to do with
the league not having any money. But hopefully there isn't
a glitch with his two hundred and fifty million dollar investment.
We'll see how the week of the week to pay
it's pan out for these players. We'll be back to
the Doug got Leap Show in ten seconds for first
to work from farmers. From a dog accidentally flooding a
living room to a dog taking a joy ride, we've
(31:09):
covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two. We are
farmers under written my farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and
affiliates products unavailable in every state. Oh, it's a glitch,
sevens all the time, Right, there's a glitch. Yeah, I
was gonna pay you, but there was a glitch. That's
exactly what happened, Honey. I was gonna be at home
(31:32):
on time, but there's a glitch. Uh. That is so
so funny. Uh. Eight seven seven ninety nine. Fox is
the phone number Doug gotlip show here on Fox. Sport Trader.
You might not be able to get a new car
with your tax refund, but you can make your car
feel like it's brand new. All it needs a great
paint job. Come into Maco today and get your dream
(31:53):
paint job during their tax season sales event. What are
the chances that Ice Harper gets more money than Manny Machado.
You'll find out next. From a hot air balloon landing
on a car to a load of concrete falling on one,
we've covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing or two. We
(32:14):
are farmers. Under written my farmer's truck, Fire insurance exchanges
and affiliates products unavailable in every state. Car shopping can
be confusing with terms like dealer price, list price, and
invoice price. True car shows what other people paid for
the car you want. You can recognize a good price
(32:36):
when you're ready to buy a new or used car,
Visit True Car and they enjoy more confident car buying experience.
All right, so the news today is Manny Machado ten years,
three million dollars. We'll get to that as part of
our next portion the show walas to get you more
perspective from the world of baseball upcoming. In the meantime,
let's get to a game. Okay, this is game tie
(33:03):
on the Doug Gottlieb Show. You might not be able
to get a new car with your tax refund, but
you can make your car feel like it's brand new.
All it needs a great paint job coming do Mako
today get your dream paint job during their tax season
sales event. Dan by what he got Doug. The game
today is one of the chances. All right, Well, if
(33:25):
Manny Machado is in the fold, what are the chances
that Bryce Harper's contract will be worth more than Machado's
that he's apparently going to get from the Padres. Bryce
Harper is a better player than Manny Machado. Um, they've
they both had some lolly gagging tendencies, but Bryce Harper's
generally stayed out of the you know, he seemed to
(33:47):
play harder than Manny Machado. And every day you're on
the market and a guy signs, you usually get a
dollar more. I'm gonna I'm gonna say Bryce Harper's price,
Harper's contracts can be more well find out in the
next h I don't know. Plus he's got Scott Borses
an agent. Scott Bors is currently rewriting his book to
show how much more valuable he is in Machado. Yeah,
(34:08):
we don't know. We're gonna wait hours or days, but
we do expect a decision soon for Bryce Harper. Phillies
reportedly still the front runner, but the Pondres apparently not
necessarily ruled out on Harper, even though they did sign
Manny Machado. So I would be surprised if you went
to San Diego as well. But still a possibility, according
(34:28):
to reports on Twitter, what are the chances that the
Pittsburgh Steelers trade Antonio Brown to a team in the
A f c uh less than fifty fifty? I mean,
I would say, like chance, Like at this point in time,
they'll take you know, they'll they'll they'll take top bitter um,
but I don't think they want to give him to
the Browns that they're gonna play twice a year Ravens.
(34:51):
I think they would just because Lamar Jackson's their quarterback. Oh,
he's got all. He's gonna get his four or five
balls a game. But I don't think the Ravens are
gonna offer up any sort of bounty for him. But
I'm gonna say thirty percent. It's more likely he's trade
to the NFC. But it doesn't mean they wouldn't send
a Buffalo or or you know, to Tennessee or somewhere
else that they're they You know, we'll get more thoughts
(35:11):
in that top of the hour, but I'm gonna okay, Doug.
There's some other NFL news, as Drew Rosenhouse, who represents
Antonio Brown, also represents Rob Gronkowski. Rosenhouse told the ESPN
that the Patriots ten end is going to be sad
in the next couple of weeks if you'll play in
twenty nineteen. So what are the chances that Gronk retires
from the NFL this offseason. I'm gonna say seventy chance.
(35:34):
He's hinted at it. He supposedly hasn't spent a penny
of his salary that he's earned during his time in
the NFL. Obviously, he's wanted to change his contract the
last two years, get incentive laden deals in order to
get the most money possible. You don't have Drew Rosenhouse's
raged unless you want to get the most money possible.
But there does come point time to which you're like,
you know, can I can I top this? I want
(35:57):
a couple of Super Bowls. My body is breaking down.
I do think there's a chance he comes back, but
I'm gonna say chance he shuts it down, all right?
What are the chances Doug that the Alliance of American
Football lasts four years? We touched on it a little
while ago with the missing of the payments for the
first week. But now you've got this two fifty million
(36:18):
dollar investment. It seems like you've got the backing of
some TV networks. What are the chances the Alliance last
four years? I'm gonna say it's about a fifty two
percent chance. Remember, a lot of these things, even if
they failed to really exist in the public eye, they
still exist. You know, Like there's a professional women's soccer
league right after the World Cup. This is a couple
(36:40):
of World Cups ago, and it was on TV for
like the first year and a half, and then all
of a sudden, people started to realize that nobody wants
to watch professional women's soccer on television. It's still existed
for like five or six years, just nobody heard about it.
So I still think it will exist. I just don't
know if anybody will hear about it in four years.
I gotta tweet this morning from a long time listener, Chris,
asking if it was a success. He goes, I haven't
(37:01):
heard tons of promos about it, but I've actually think
that it's been out there. The crowd of Memphis that
they had this past weekend was atrocious. It was eleven
thousand announced, but there was maybe eleven people at the game.
But don't you think with the backing of the NFL
that if it's if it's going to stick around, that's
going to be the reason. Why not because it's caught
(37:22):
on with fans or ticket sales, It's because they obviously,
I mean it's like, all of a sudden, you get
two million dollars and financing That just strikes me as like, dude,
they're running low on cash. They need they need a
cash investment right away. It doesn't feel like an investment
that's gonna pay off. The San Diego Fleets will be
changing their name to San Diego Fleecet. Know. Just what
(37:45):
are the chances, Doug, that Tony Romo makes the cut
when he teas it up on the PGA Tour at
May at the A T and T Byron Nelson as
he received a sponsors exemption from the PGA Tour for
that event later this year, making the cut for Tony Romo,
I'm gonna say sixty percent chance. This is the Byron's
played in Dallas, it's his home area. He's playing that
(38:07):
course a ton of time. I don't think he's ever
made the cut before, but he's playing the best golf
of his life. I'm gonna sayce Basica. Now he can
at least spend some time with it. Finally, how did
this one get on here? What are the chances, Doug,
that you can get me two tickets to the North
Carolina Syracuse game a week from today at Chapel Hill
One are the one? Are the chances? I would say,
(38:29):
there's good chances. Chance Like all right, all right, you're
just going You're just at a bucket list, you're going, No,
it's I got a golf trip with my buddy that
we're leaving on Saturday. So we're going to play golf
in North Carolina for four days. And the Heels are
in town when facing Syracuse a week from tonight. So
(38:50):
we thought, hey, let's go to a go to a
hoops game and uh, we're gonna go check out the
Tar Heels. All right, that'd be that'd be great. I'd appreciate.
I'd love to see what the Dean Dome is all about.
Cameron in door and Duke not playing when we are there,
so that's that's not gonna happen, But would love to
see a great matchup North Carolina Syracuse. Why not? Right?
(39:13):
This is game time on the Duck Gottlieb Show. I
told you guys this story before that. Um, when I
was in college, my now mother in law asked my
then girlfriend, now wife of eighteen years. But this is
before she's my wife if I was on steroids, and
(39:34):
I took it as a compliment, like you're gonna ask
me if I'm on steroids and I'm not on steroids.
Have never come anywhere near taking anything that would be
seen as illegal. I'm barely a supplement guy, and I
take it as a comment when I hear that the
Lakers are concerned about Lebron James come back from injury.
(39:55):
He missed eighteen games and he just played in the
All Star Game. So if he was still hurt, you
went to play in the All Star Game, went to
play in that Hawks game. That to me is the
It's the it's like an insult more than anything else.
You're saying, like, well, he's been so bad and so
unathletic and so you know, disengaged from the team, he
must still be hurt. It's like the opposite of what
(40:19):
my mother lost. So when I hear it, I'm I'm
sitting there going, like, the Lakers see what I have seen,
which is there are just times when Lebron doesn't have it,
and those times are becoming more often, not less often,
and he's aging before our eyes, which is a very
reasonable thing for human beings to do, but we think
of our superhero athletes is not human beings, and he's
(40:42):
at a in a sport, at a position where you
lose just a little bit of athleticism and people will
expose you for it. You can still play through it.
He's not terrible, he's still incredibly effective, but he's not
the level of dominant player that he's been. I think
the Lakers saying, hey, we're a little bit concerned about
him playing through this injury. What they're really saying is,
(41:06):
we'd think he doesn't look nearly as athletic as the
guy we thought we'd have, and that is freaking us
out right now. Antonio Brown has been putting on quite
an act the past few months. Earlier today he slipped
up and told us what it's all about. We'll explain next.
What Up Tuck Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, brought to
(41:27):
you by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so
we know how to cover almost anything. When it's game time,
have an experienced player help you stay ahead of the game.
Put their experience in a play at Farmers dot com.
Farmers Huge Day in Sports. A J. Prazynski is gonna
join us former White sock who is a world champion
(41:48):
in a Major League Baseball analyst to give us his
thoughts on the Manning Mancado to the San Diego Padres deal.
Ironically enough, I watched Anchorman too last night, couldn't sleep
in New York City time zones all screwed up. Literally
hadn't seen Anchorman too, and it was exactly what I
(42:08):
thought in that there was some really hokey parts, but
some great lines as well, man great lines. Do you
did you know that there's a Ron Burgundy podcast? We
have an I heeart. Are you familiar with that Ryan music?
That there's actually he does a podcast in ron Burgundy. Yes,
I am aware of that, but it's very funny. Might
have to download it, might have to listen. Are All
(42:29):
Ball podcast drops tomorrow? Of course you can listen to
daily versions of this show on the podcast A. J.
Prazynski This hour? Do we have Denny Hamblin this hour?
Next hour? Try next hour? In our schedule we had
Denny Hamblin on First Things First earlier today, and sometimes
a five minute pre interview is all you need. He
sits down next to us and I was just like, so,
(42:50):
this has gotta been a world. When he's like, yeah,
I went home and last night I played in the
league basketball game. I was like, you did. Yeah. He
has a he has a gym at his house which
is sick and has the NASCAR pick up basketball league
or whatever basketball league at his house. So and dropped
thirty one last night and now he's doing the media
(43:12):
media today. Denny Hamil will join us next hour. Got
a great show for you. Antonio Brown apparently met with
Art Rooney earlier today. This was after an Instagram post.
Here's his I g live. Take a listen to Antonio Brown.
Keeping mind he's on a treadmill at the time. If
(43:34):
your teams got guaranteed money, they want to get to
know me and work with me, tell him call me
if your squad either I want to win, your squad
want the hungry while receiver? Who the best in the
whole world? Someone hit my phone something I ain't doing
no on guarantees. I ain't even gonna play myself no
(43:56):
more for his nflure. Yeah, I I feel like that
was the moment when he came out of this character
that he's created. It's been about Mike Tomlin. It's been
about Ben Roethlisberger, it's been about the offensive coordinator, it's
been about the Steelers. It's been about a lot of things.
(44:16):
But it turns out it's about what we always think
that it's about, and no one ever wants to say
that it's about it's about the money, right, It's about
the money. That's all it's about. Yesterday it was Ben Roethlisberger.
Other times it has been this thing. It has been
(44:37):
that thing. He has been misunderstood. He just happens to
be on a treadmill. It happens to come out of
character for a second and says like, hey, he didn't
say I'll play for anybody anywhere, I just want to play.
He didn't say it was about winning a title. He
said it was if you have guaranteed money. I'm not
(44:58):
playing for non guaranteed money. That's what this is about.
This is just a power play. There's a power play.
His contract has no guaranteed money left, and he was
done playing for no guaranteed money, and so he put
his future ahead of his team's present in week seventeen,
(45:19):
and that's all we needed to hear. Maybe some of
its confirmation bias because we always think it's about the money,
especially when people say it's not about the money, or
maybe it's just the reality of his contracts what he
said in all lining up and it making sense and
not considering Antonio Brown a liar. I'm not saying that
big Ben Rothsburger hasn't disrespected him. I'm not saying that
(45:42):
some of the discipline issues within the team aren't issues
that need to be resolved. He's not wrong. But the
heart of the matter is, here's a guy who had
three years left in the contract that he signed and
he didn't like it, and so he's torpedoing that. He's
tord he doing his current relationship to get a better contract.
(46:03):
It's really that easy. It's really that easy. He goes
on to tweet out later today, earlier today, had a
great meeting when this to Rooney to day. We discussed
a lot of things and we cleared there on several issues.
We both agreed that it's time to move on. But
I've always had appreciation gratitude towards the Rooney family and
the Stealers organization. Hashtag call god a hashtag booming. Well,
(46:28):
you know, I probably picked up some followers with those hashtags.
This from Adda King Adida King Kabwala, who covers the
Stealers for the NFL Network. According to some fort Front
office folks I've spoken to, the biggest challenge for Antonio
Brown right now is proving that he will indeed respect
his new club, his new coaches, new teammates, as one
(46:49):
exact said, respect in his mind includes showing up in meetings.
That's high threshold right there. Like look, risk back for
him isn't necessarily about showing up in meetings. Respect for
him is going to be about how much guaranteed money
are you willing to give him? That's it. Anytime they
(47:10):
say it's not about the money, it is about the money.
And he didn't didn't mention money for a long time,
and now suddenly during during a workout or he can't
kind of pre formulate how he wants to appear, what
he wants to say. He's on I G Live. He
lets the cat out of the bag. Hey, this thing
has been about guaranteed money the entire time period stop,
end of story. And it's probably what he expressed to
(47:31):
Mr Rooney today. Yeah, you know all of those things
I said, Some of them are true, some of them
are not. But I'm really doing it because I know
you guys can't give me the deal I want. I
want to find somebody they can and gonna get you
something back in return. And it's gonna be fascinating to
see exactly how much he will get in a new deal,
(47:51):
because he'll get a new deal and he'll get some
guaranteed money. But how much will it be and will
it equate to what the Steelers would have been willing
to pay? How do he late in week seventeen and
gone back to them and said, hey, can we put
some guaranteed money? They might have said no. But there's
a right way and a wrong way to handle this,
and torpedoing your coach, torpedoing your offense, torpeeding your team,
(48:13):
to repeeding your quarterback, that's one that doesn't sit well
with a lot of people in the NFL. No matter
how talented you are, anybody can anybody can enjoy work
when things are going well? Can you enjoy work and
being be an enjoyable teammate and be all about the
team when things aren't going well? And there in lies
(48:34):
the rub with Antonio Brown, Ryan, you want to add something?
Is there anything to the fact that, look, this, this
whole thing with Antonio Brown has been going on for
quite a while, but this idea, the tweet that it's
like they've both agreed that he's going to be traded.
Maybe something develops in the next few days, But What
about the idea that the Patriots, you know, we're all
(48:54):
in on trying to get Odell Beckham Jr. But they
don't seem to have the same type of interest in
Antonio Brown. Well. I think that Antonio Brown one reminds
them of Chad Johnson. He grew up idolizing Chad Johnson,
and Chad Johnson did not fit with the Patriots. Part
(49:15):
of it was he just wasn't smart enough. He couldn't
remember where to line up, and he's always been a freelancer.
He's always kind of done his own thing, and that
just doesn't work with Tom Brady. He has to know,
based upon coverage, where you're gonna be, and that's where
he's gonna throw the football, and he does not. He
you have to. He has to be able to trust you,
so we told you after the Super Bowl, right, It's
so much of it is about trust. Can he trust
(49:37):
where you're gonna be, where you're gonna be so that
he can throw it before you're where you're supposed to be.
He has to read it, he has to get rid
of it a little quicker than normal because he can't
do well under any sort of pressure because he just
doesn't move. He never moved well and now he moves
even worse here late in his career, and I think
that's part of it. I also think remember when they
(49:58):
reached out to the Giant, it's about Odell Beckham Jr.
It was last year this time. That was when O
b J was under a rookie contract and still would
have been for a year, and they probably would have
let him walk after that, Whereas now oh b J's
under a bigger veteran contract and it's a much bigger
cap hit and it might not make sense for them financially.
(50:21):
Coming up. Actually gonna turn to baseball if you're just
joining US News the day Manny Machado three years, ten years,
three million dollars, steal some details to come out some
contract and it and he might they might not have
been the highest bidder. What does a J. Perzynski World
Series champion Major League Baseball analysts think about it? I'll
ask him next. But first, using true Car, you can

we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers under
written my Farmers truck fire, insurance exchanges, and affiliates products
not available in every state. Car shopping can be confusing
(52:21):

True Car shows what other people paid for the car
you want, so you can recognize a good price when
you're ready to buy a new or used car. Visit
True Car and enjoy more confident car buying experience. So
the news of the day continues to be Manny Machado
(52:42):
signs a ten year, three hundred million dollar deal. That's
a lot of money. That's a lot and and Machado,
who has long been thought to be one of the
burgeoning stars in Major League Baseball. Though he's never finished
top three in the voting, he's been top ten in
the voting, I believe four different times. So for twenty
six years old, he's on the path to startom, maybe
(53:05):
even superstardom. But San Diego becomes kind of an interesting
fit because they're always a year away from being a
year away, and even if this year they're a year away,
it's still a year away. And he was just with
the Dodgers who had a ton of money and they
chose to not spend it on Machado. The Bryce harp wrangle.
Does he get more or do they cross each other
(53:25):
out because the Padres get them both. I think that's interesting. Well,
maybe you weren't anything like, do you actually need one
guy making this much money to win a World Series?
I don't know. The Dodgers and the Yankees and others
have said no, not really. The only two bidders were
the White Sox and the Padres at that level, and
(53:47):
the White Sox had more money potentially, but he wasn't guaranteed,
and Machado, as I think most people would guess that
he would do, took the guaranteed money. Which is part
of the problem is if you told me made him Machado,
the first four or five years pretty good, and you've
got a pretty good return on investment. But then the
like it is, the last four or five years are
equally or even pronounced the worse by comparison, you know,
(54:13):
And will he compete when their way out of the
of the playoff race? Will he compete and be able
to play the left side of the infield into his thirties?
And will you show the type of leadership you need
for young players as the Padres, by all accounts, have
a spectacular farm system that eventually is going to elevate
themselves to play in the bigs. Doesn't feel like there's
(54:37):
a leadership quotation to him, Sure doesn't, um, But I
I do think people are gonna clown Revel for putting
out that if you, if you great inflation. This is
not the biggest deal ever. Three million dollars a lot
of money, but it is not. It is not the
(54:57):
biggest number we've ever seen. It's just not. Gian Carlos
stands number thirteen years though, and lots of options and
the chance to get out of it and eventually forcing
a trade to the Yankees, like all of those things.
But the three hundred plus million, three million dollars is
more than three hundred and I understand there's a per
year deal, but I think there's actually some symbolism in
(55:21):
the fact that he didn't sign for a penny more
than three hundred million dollars. It's this is there is
a market correction. You're not gonna get that money from
the successful teams, and even the money you got from
the padres. It feels and sounds like more than it
actually is. And it's obviously thirty million dollars a year
on average, guaranteed for ten years in arguably the greatest
(55:43):
city to live in anywhere in the country. Is an
amazing deal for Manny Machado, but there does still feel
like a bit of a market correction, and I guess
we'll see what happens with Bryce Harper. A. J. Prazinski
won a World Series with the Chicago White Sox, who
are left as the bride'smaid. Earlier today, he of course,
um covers Major League Baseball four Fox Fox Baseball Saturday
(56:04):
kicks off two sizes of nineteen season braves at Phillies.
Philly's very much in the hunt for Bryce Harper and
maybe Mike Trout in future years March four o'clock Eastern time,
followed by the Angels who have Mike Trout and the
A's at nine pm Eastern time on Fox Sports One.
A J. What's your immediate What was your first reaction
when you heard ten years, three million Machado to San Diego? Geez?
(56:27):
I wish I was a better player, That was my
first reaction. Um, yeah, I mean, well, it was kind
of the deal that everyone was expecting, right. It wasn't
from the the padres assarily, but that's what everyone was
talking about today. Man, he's gonna get this amount of money, uh,
in this many years and all that, and he just
waited and waited. But I don't think anyone saw the
Padres coming and being the team to give it to him.
(56:49):
So I think that was more of a surprise than
the actual dollar amount or the anything that came with it.
I just think it was the team that ended up
doing it wasn't surprise. Yeah, what are your thoughts on
the Padres, because I'll just share mine, Like, look, here's
a team that's been a year away from being a
year away for a long time. Last year they gave
a bunch of money to Hosmer, and I think the
(57:10):
idea was like, look, we still need a solid vet.
We need to spend some of this money for people
to come to the park, and he's been a part
of a winning culture. He'll help with it. You're gonna
pay a guy three hundred million dollars, doesn't you have
to have a little bit better reputation as a leader
and a clubhouse guy and a guy who's gonna get
the most possible out of himself and his teammates. And
it feels like if there's one thing that took a
(57:31):
hit more than anything this this past offseason. Isn't that
what took a hit from Maccado, I guess, But I mean, hey,
the pod Padres money, they can do whatever they want
with it. And if they feel the many, Macado is
the guy to get him the next level. Because I
can remember, like you said, the Padres have always been
a team like when are they going to be good?
They haven't been good for a decent amount of time.
Guess when they lost to the Yankees. They've been in
(57:52):
the playoffs a couple of times here and they've never
done any damage in the playoffs, loss in the wild
cards to the Rockies. I mean, they just haven't done
the the things you you would think an organization like
the Padres, new ballpark, all that stuff, a great fan
base in San Diego that I think is kind of
underrepresented by um people. But man, yeah, the Padres needed
this deal, I think more than anybody, just to legitimize
(58:14):
themselves to their fans. I think They're fans have gotten
to a point where they were like, we're tired of
being also rans, and so they needed to do something,
and this was the move they thought would be the
thing to get them over the top, especially in that market.
And remember it's a one team market. Now there's no
more Chargers, there's the Clippers have moved a long time ago.
So the Padres are in San Diego and they're gonna
take advantage of it as they It could be really good.
(58:36):
What should our reasonable expectations of Machado be? Like, how
good do you believe he actually is? Well, he's a
really good player. No, I mean, don't get me wrong,
he's a he's a great player. He's a phenomenal defender.
Whether he plays short or third, that's gonna be the
major decision for the Padres. But he's he's an all
(58:58):
star player, he's a top ten talent. And they baseball
and you have to pay, excuse me, you have to
pay to get that kind of production. And I think
the Padres knew that and they did that and pluses
for a team that hasn't been on the map for
so long. They don't have the cashe of the Yankees
and the Red Sox, so they can be like, hey,
we want you to come play for us, and team
people like, oh, I've I've been a Padres fan of
(59:19):
my whole life. You don't hear that a whole lot. So, uh,
sometimes you have to overpay to get guys to come.
And they did it, and they did what they thought
was right for the realization. But again, they needed this
signing to legitimize themselves with the fans. I know talking
to some of the guys and at the Fox Seminar
Baseball Seminar this past weekend that hey, they said the
same thing like, Hey, the Padres. Yes, they're not the
sexy team, they're not this, but they're in a one
(59:40):
team market, like I said, and they need this signing
and they went out and did it. I give them
all the credit in the world for doing it. Um,
what does this mean for Bryce Harper, Well, he's got
to be seeing dollar signs, right. It means that the
Padres are out on them, I would guess. I mean,
unless the Padres are just gonna break the bank and
go get both of them. But it means the Phillies.
I mean, I guess the Phillies are narrowing in on
them now. I mean I don't uh, I don't know, Um,
(01:00:04):
I don't know. I mean I haven't seen the market.
I think either one of these guys saw the market.
They thought that was gonna be there, and Machado had
worked it and got it, got the deal he wanted
in a great place. I heard you say, the greatest
place to live in American and San Diego. It's pretty dark,
nice weather, it's great, ballpark's nice on the water. But
does Bryce Harper want to go to Philly? I'm sure
Philly has made him an offer, but does he want
to go there? The Nationals? Uh? I don't know. It's
(01:00:26):
it's all about finding a fit and a team that
wants him, and I just don't know what that is
right now. I guess the Phillies would be the team
that's going. Yeah, there's nobody else out there for Bryce,
So come come to come to Papa. Yeah, DoD the
Phillies have to do. You know, the Phillies owner came
out and said they'd spend stupid money. But now there's
a chance they could be bidding against themselves. I know
there's talk Padres be like, hey, listen, we're still interested.
And maybe now the White Sox say, hey, we got
(01:00:48):
all this money, we're interested. But if you're the Nationals,
do you have to pay even more money when you
might be biddy against yourself. If you're willing to go
to the extra years that the Nationals and others aren't
willing to go to, you might be. But that's danger
your taste because you don't know unless they're cluding like
a lot of the players and are saying that they're doing,
then they don't know what other teams are offering. So
(01:01:08):
that's spoke for your free agencies all about. It's always
a gamble and we've seen teams do that to themselves
before in the past and outbid themselves for no reason.
And Scott morris is has always made the media feel
like he's a master of that, right, So, I mean,
if he's as good as he says and he can
get them, you know, five hund million. I guess gottlive
show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, kind of kind
(01:01:30):
of interested in the Yankees right that that here they are.
You would have thought Harper, but they don't really need
a right fielder Machado, but they didn't really like this.
This used to be, Hey, the Yankees want everybody. Are
the Yankees waiting for Arnado? Are the Yankees waiting for
Mike Trout or do they do they feel like they're
waiting because they know they have to pay Aaron Judge.
(01:01:52):
What are the Yankees waiting on considering they've been they've
been kind of cutting salary in the past couple of years. Well,
they're waiting on Aaron Judge to them up there, waiting
on Jeane Carlos Stanton's contract, who they just traded for it.
I've run out but seven years Uh, Deeed Gregorious is
a free agent. After the year they signed a bunch
of they signed. You have to fill the rotation need.
They signed Zack Brittain to fill a bullpen knee. They
(01:02:15):
brought in two load to fill in for d D.
While he's heard they signed Lamenthew Uh, second base or not.
Sexual moves are good moves. But at the end of
the day, man, it's sure would look be nice to
have an outfield of Stanton, Judge and Harper that looked
real nice and Yankee team that play really nice or
Machado a third. You know they possibly trade and do
har have Glaver Tour as a second, Machado at third
(01:02:35):
or short and then d D. That's pretty darn tough
to be too to compete with. So uh, they're not
the Yankees of old though. George Stimmann is not coming
back anytime soon, so hal Sheimrenner has kind of slowed
the reins. And it's in new baseball. You've seen every team.
The thing is a lot of these teams are owned
by corporations, and the corporations say, hey, it's about making dollars.
And when you have a single owner like Learner in
(01:02:57):
Washington or Illig when he was in Detroit, he's get
competitive and they say, hey, we want to win. And
those guys are are few and far between now, so
it's not about an ego trip and I want to
win a World Series no matter what the cost. It's
a bottom line thing, and teams are spending much more
thrifly and they figure the teams look at and say, hey,
I get three guys to fill in for one with
the same amount of money, so let's do it that way.
(01:03:18):
And fans are buying in and teams like the Cubs
and Astros did it and they won a World Series.
They broke it all the way down and it's a
good thing for those organizations, but it's been a bad
thing for baseball because every team thinks it's that easy
and it's not. Yeah, and and like look the Dodgers.
You you get guys who have big analytics department. Yankees
the same, and they platoon players are the way in like,
(01:03:39):
what does this? Does this actually help the market, because
the market really is about for the middle It's about
the middle class, right, It's about the veteran guys more
than it's about the high dollar guys. Aren't then not anymore?
If you notice, the high dollar guys are the ones
that get the money and the middle class is kind
of phased out because the middle class now are minor
league deals. So no, it's not it's about the young
kids who make five hundreds whatever I think I minims
(01:04:01):
five fifteen now five sixty maybe, Um, it's about those
kids until they get to arbitration, and it's almost like
once you hit arbitration you get the free agency. You're old.
I mean I hate to say that, but like I
think I was twenty seven, maybe my first seven, my
first r be here now ye six heck now they'd
be like, man, you're old for six uh and and
(01:04:22):
also by these platoons that suppressed this guy's numbers. So
if you look at it from a team, you're like, okay,
if we have a guy that only backs against lefties
and they have a guy that only backs against right ees.
Instead of getting five hundred, six hundred bats and putting
up numbers, they only have two dred and fifty at
bats apiece. And instead of having homers, they have ten
homers apiece. So that also holds down salaries. So teams
are smarter now they understand it, and they also believe
(01:04:43):
that with the platoon splits and with everything that, all
the information that's out there, it helps him win better.
I mean, look, I'd rather have a guy like Manny
Machado or Bryce Harper that gives me six hundred bats
and I know what I'm gonna get in a sur
presence in the lineup. But teams don't look at like that.
A lot of these teams think their robots and and
that's fine, it's their own way of feeling about it.
But there's something to be said about a presence in
(01:05:03):
a lineup, in a in a veteran guy that can
go in there and sit third every day or hit
fourth in your line up every day, and other teams
know it and they have to plan for great stuff.
A j baseball season is back. Great to have you
back on the show. Can't wait to hear you on
Fox and Fox Sports One. Thanks much of me our
guests on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, do I have a
quick question for you? Does this make the padres good
this year? No? Okay, So what's the Why do they
(01:05:27):
do it? I think it. I think it fills up
some of the seats where everybody else is waiting on
the prospects to get called up. I think they had
a bunch of money. I do think. I think you
you nailed a lot of it. I just my thing is, like, man,
the Dodgers had no desire to have him around at all.
And when you're gonna give a guy three hundred million dollars,
like he's gonna have to mentor some of the young
(01:05:49):
guys more so than just hitting baseballs and fielding baseballs.
And I just felt like the Dodgers felt like he
wasn't that guy and they needed a shortstop. So I
you think it makes you hopeful for the future, and
that the idea is, you know, if their hit rate
is fifty fifty on all these prospects and you have
the Shadow and you have Hosmer, and you still have
a little bit of money to spend they're they're really
(01:06:12):
they're a year away from being legit there, whereas you know,
the Diamondbacks seem to have have packed up shop and
decide they went for the last couple of years and
now they're going to retool. And it feels like this
is the last year the Rockies before Rotado probably leaves
as well, so that I think that their timeline is
a year from now. Okay, I agree, No, you're right,
but let's let's go one thing straight. They still need
(01:06:32):
to find some pitching. Oh yeah, I mean that's the
whole thing. The pitching is the hardest thing to find.
You can go out sign Maaming Shodow Knife Signing signy
and Kindler nice signing. Have Will Meyers in the outfield,
have you know hawgsware first base. But man, they need
some pictures, I mean the right and you need bullpen.
You need depth of arms and then depth of bullpen.
Everyone else in the sport is loading up on bullpen.
(01:06:55):
They so much so they want to expand the rosters
sent you to account for more open guys, and the
padres are like, yeah, let's live like it and go
out and give the big, big amount of so like
we'll see we'll see. I agree. I love it as
an ex player, get every dollar you can and get
all the money can. I love it, But I mean
sometimes you know, it's the way the front officers think,
(01:07:16):
why I do it? That's where there's such a slow
free agency. A J. Great stuff. A J. Perzinski from

Let's get you to Dan Buyer. We actually gave him
three hundred million over three hundred million years, a lot
more years, a lot more years, six hullion years. Yeah, yeah,
a lot a lot more years. He had ten years,
three hundred million dollars the number for Manny Machado. Antonio
Brown wants a new number. These Steelers wide receiver did
(01:08:00):
meet with older Art Roody the second today, and reports say,
including Brown himself, decides great, Yeah, it's time to part
ways and move on from each other. The NFL network says,
though that the Steelers, arguing going to be the ones
to dictate where Brown goes via trade not Brown in
his representatives, but something to watch. Brown did post a
picture of him and Art Roody the Second on his

(01:09:47):
Um I want to get to the meeting that occurred today.
It was and there's a picture sent out by Antonio Brown.
But um boy, it's almost it's almost bipolar some of
the other social media post right where yesterday it was
Ben ben shaming, today it was you know, posting on
a treadmill about guaranteed money. What's what's your sense of
(01:10:12):
before the meeting. What's going on with Antonio Brown, Doug,
you're asking the impossible. I have no idea. I mean
I can't even interpret some of that stuff that that
he has said. He's been all over the place. He's
certainly not enhancing either his trade value which maybe he
(01:10:34):
doesn't care about that only the Steeters care, or his marketability.
I would think, Um, it's just bizarre stuff that, Um,
you know, I don't know that we've seen before. You know,
I'm on the Hall of Fame. I'm a Hall of
Fame voter, and you know t O the t O
(01:10:55):
stuff came up, the Randy Moss stuff came up, but
they never did anything close to this. Uh, there wasn't
social media. I mean, like, look he did remember t
O had the sit ups and and curls in the driveway.
That's like the closest thing I can relate to this.
(01:11:16):
You know. I was told like, look, Antonio Brown, this
is a playbook from Chad Johnson, Like that's who he
grew up kind of idolizing, and Chad Johnson had some
bizarre behavior when it came to an end in Cincinnati,
and that's what this kind of feels like. Um, Yeah,
it's okay. So then you fast forward. But the one
thing I picked up on today, which is I had
(01:11:37):
heard in NFL circles, like, you know, his contract, even
though it hurts them on the cap, there's no guaranteed
money he talked about today in his I G post.
Doesn't that just expose that That's what this has always
been about. It's always been about his contracts, his future
and getting more guaranteed, getting some guaranteed money on the table. Dog.
I don't know, I really don't. I mean, is there
(01:11:57):
a team out there that's going to do that. I
mean one of the attractive points in a in a
trade for another team is that he has three years
left in his contract, and I don't have it right
in front of me. I think it's like twelve eleven,
twelve for the next three years, um. And none of
that's guaranteed, as you know, as he pointed out, So
(01:12:20):
the attractiveness to a team is, um, if you give
up a draft pick and he comes in and he's
good for a year, but you know it starts doing
this stuff again kind of you don't know him anything,
you know, Um, the Steelers are taken the blow this
year and then they'll be done with him as far
(01:12:41):
as their cap all right. So then there's the meeting.
What have you heard from what actually was discussed during
the meeting? Um? Nothing beyond what's been made public that
both sides agreed to, UM, you know, to to move on.
That Steelers are gonna try and trade him. They didn't
(01:13:01):
allow um him or Drew Rosenhaus's age and to to
shop him around. Uh, They're going to try and do
it themselves. I'm sure things will ramp up next week
at Combine. UM. I guess. I guess what's interesting to
me though, is was there ever any contrition from Antonio
(01:13:22):
Brown when he met him? You know, like, was there
any ever like, hey, sorry to drag your franchise through
the mud and all I know it's not really the
Steeler away any sense if there is any contrition. No,
I haven't heard that. Uh, Doug, the only thing it
was the photo that are agreed to take with him.
(01:13:43):
You know, some people in Pittsburgh are criticizing Art for
for having done that. But you know, the Steelers do
not They don't try and rub things in. Uh, they don't,
you know, they don't hold grudge as usually. UM, it
was a parting shot probably, and I don't mean a
parting shot at a parting of the ways and hey, okay,
(01:14:04):
let's move on. Good luck to you in the future.
But now I didn't hear that. Um, you know, Antonio
was gracious for Antonio and the thing he tweeted out.
What about Levyan Bell. There's some talk that they would
still transition tag Levyan Bell. What have you heard in
regards to that. Yeah, that's what I've heard. Two dog,
(01:14:25):
and I think it's crazy. Um. The reason for them
to do that is twofold one, to try and get
that get something for him in a trade. Um. And
that would occur if some team signed him, uh, and
then they have the contract, they match it, and then
(01:14:47):
they trade him to me. That's taken a that's taken
kind of a risk there that you're going to be
able to do that. Number two would be to try
and m hmm, not allow him to go to certain teams.
Like let's say he signs with Baltimore, you match it,
and then try and trade him away from from Baltimore.
(01:15:10):
But I just think that's so convoluted, Like if he
signs with Baltimore, what's to say some other team wants him.
I mean, they could have signed him themselves to a
to an offer sheet. I just I don't know. It
sounds way convoluted, but it's still on their game plan.
Is it possible, though, that they're doing it with the intent? Look,
(01:15:31):
we gotta get something out of this asset. We just
can't let him walk. It's not necessarily controlling thing, but
it's that, Yeah, we got to get something in return
for losing Levian Bell. You have it again, how are
you going to do it? I mean again? If he
and I use Baltimore as an example to pick some
other teams. Baltimore's in the division and needs a running back,
he signs with Baltimore, and what are you gonna do?
(01:15:53):
You're gonna trade him back to Baltimore. He would have
to agree to that, by the way, for that to happen. Um,
I just I don't know. I don't see it happened.
They would get a they probably get a compic in
if he just leaves as a free agent. If they
if they tag him and they withdraw the tag, why
why why do it? So? Why do it? Ed? Is
(01:16:15):
it out of vengeance? Is it out a vengeance? Is
it out of you know, is it being petty vengeance.
It's it would be purely in there. They think it's
in their best interests. But I just can't figure out
why that is, you know, to divert him from signing
with a team in the NFC or to try and
(01:16:35):
get a draft pick form this year. Just again, all
the stars in the galaxy would have to align for
that to happen. Awesome stuff, Ed Baschette. Check out his

Bruce started on a disputeru Ler today discussing the Lakers
and their chances to make the playoffs this season. It's
going to play out and that Lebron James is gonna
(01:18:30):
come back for the second half, what we call the
second half last games and play great basketball. The Lakers
are healthy now for the first time, well hopefully they
they'll stay healthy. I'm predicting this. Remember Rondo's missed thirty
four games, Brandon Ingram's missed the Levin Linso's missed ten.
(01:18:51):
Of course in addition to Lebron. So with Linzo back,
their defense improves and the Lakers make the playoffs. I
think they will be back in the playoffs, meaning the
top eight seeds by early March. Chris, I'm telling you
right here, right now, no way, no how does the
(01:19:11):
Lakers do The Lakers make the playoffs and then that
they haven't been good with or without Lebron. Lebron has
been back for six games. He set out one game,
but he was two and three in those games. Have
you seen the defense to give it up a hundred
and twenty nine points? Lebron's playing no defense? Uh? Look,
Rob is not wrong. Lebron has looked the disengaged or
(01:19:35):
like he's kind of being very tentative on his formerly
pulled growing But the idea that he they haven't been
good at all this year with Lebron is frankly incorrect.
They had a roll in beat Golden State. Um. Even
before they beat Golden State, there was a time they
were seventeen and ten on the season and really we're
starting to kind of come into their own and that's
(01:19:57):
where when injuries derailed them. They got a Houston at
a home, which is a winnable game and an important
game in terms of how they look. Then they go
to New Orleans, go to Memphis. Those are two teams
and New Orleans at home. Those are three games against
two teams that are trying to lose games. You need
to win three out of these first four. You win
three out of these first four, you'll be fine. Obviously,
(01:20:18):
they still have games against the likes of Milwaukee, they
still have Boston at home. They stuff to go on
the road to Toronto, they stuff to go on the
road to Oklahoma City. They still got at least one
game I know with Golden States. So there's not not
lined up with Shore fire wins the rest of the season.
But even though the schedule technically is the fourth toughest
(01:20:38):
in the West, you're gonna know whether or not they're
gonna make the playoffs based upon these first five or
six games of the second half of the year. The
late stretch of the year, Houston at home, at New Orleans,
at Memphis, New Orleans at home, Milwaukee at Phoenix, and
against the Clippers at home. You'll know right there and there,
you know, if they run off six out of set Heaven,
(01:21:00):
they're gonna make the playoffs and be a seventh seed.
And they'll be fine. If they win three, they're not
gonna They're not gonna make the playoffs. I agree with
Chris Brussard. I think ultimately they'll make it. I think
they're gonna when when they add Linzo Ball, I think
that changes them for the better. And barring another injury
to Lebron James, they should be fine to be a
little bit lower seed, but in the position they thought
(01:21:22):
they would be in two Wrexham havoc in the upcoming
NBA playoffs. Say, here's Rob Parker, also in The Indisputed,
talking about the Giants potentially trading O'Dell Beckham Jr. If
they don't upgrade the quarterback position, and I mean get
their quarterback in the future in the draft or make
some sort of move away from Eli Manning, the Giants
(01:21:44):
will trade Odell Beckham Jr. I believe that because if
you watch Eli and Odell oh b J. You he
can't get him the ball. It's a waste. It would
be a total waste. Now, if they decide that they
get a quarterback and they figure it out, there's no
way I would ever trade this. I just wouldn't trade him.
(01:22:06):
I don't think trading him is about whether or not
Eli can get him the football. We all know they
have to go out and get a quarterback. I think
it's are they just are they all in on oh
b J? Or is he all in on them? Again?
I thought this thing was kind of settled, but then
you look at it and you realize he did o
(01:22:26):
lay that uh the on side kick against the Bears.
That doesn't sit well with anybody, anybody in the organization,
nor should it right we we battle all week to
win games. All you gotta do is catch the ball,
hold onto the ball, and roll over. And you don't
do it like you make all these one hand catches
in the warm ups and we film them. You can't
make a two hand catch when it matters the most,
(01:22:48):
of course you can't. So I don't think it has
anything now. Could they use it to to fill out
and fix continue to fix their defense and their offensive line. Sure,
I mean, I think this is about culture more than
anything about whether or not the guy is all in
on winning. He's an immense talent, He's a freak athlete.
When he's healthy, he's amazing. Now, he also hasn't been
(01:23:10):
healthy in parts of last year and obviously breaking the
ankle the year before. MLB insider John Paul Morossi joins
the show. Did the Padres do the right thing? And
what's it mean for Bryce Harper's next? What Up? Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, brought to you by Farmers
and Farmers. We've seen almost everything, so we know how
(01:23:31):
to cover almost anything. When it's game time. An experienced
player help you stay ahead of the game. Put their
experience into play at farmers dot com. Farmers all right,
A lot to get to, a lot to get to. Uh,
we'll start in football, work our way to baseball. Man
Nim Machado has agreed to a deal. John Paul morosioll
join us in moments. First, the big story in in
(01:23:52):
football is Antonio Brown put out this weird I G
Live video where he said, Hey, basically, um single, I'm
ready to mingle holler at me if you have guaranteed money,
which leads you to think it's the more he says
it's about other stuff. It's really about the money. We'll
get to the my thoughts on Antonio Brown and and
(01:24:15):
what actually his value is on the open market upcoming.
But we we mentioned baseball, we've been waiting for Harper
or Machado. It's been a slow kind of build, and
today Manny Machado has agreed to terms with the San
Diego Padre. Should be pointed out are our southern California
(01:24:37):
phill It is the home of the Padres. This is
a huge get for them and for a fan base
that has only one major league professional sport, and the
feeling is they they're always a year away from being
a year away. They go and get a twenty six
year old perennial All star who's been top ten and
m v P validing four times. But it's a lot
of money for a guy who didn't have a good postseason,
(01:24:59):
both on the yield and in how he handled himself
with the media, especially considering everyone knew he was going
to get some sort of big contract, but there were
two bidders. He bit him up and he took more
guaranteed money from the Padres. Let's let's let's bring in John.
Paul Morossi covers Bjor League Baseball for MLB on Fox JP.
What's your reaction to not just Machado's final dollar amount,
(01:25:23):
but to the Padres being the team he lands with, Well,
Doug Good afternoon. I would say, first and foremost is
it's a pretty good demonstration that for all the concern
over baseball's economics, that when you've got a certainly wouldn't
call Santego's small market by any search of the imagination,
but not one of the marquee franchises, never having one
(01:25:44):
of World Series before, there's there's a lot of excitement
there and and clearly for a market that wasn't front
and center in the game to to bring him in
is And I think it's a big cooper for certainly
from San Diego and the end of the franchise, but
I think for the game overall, to demonstrate that the
largest free agent contract now ever signed in uh major
North American pro sports was signed by the San Diego Padres.
(01:26:06):
And think, yess it's a pretty good demonstration for your sport.
Is I'm a little surprised that he went in forced
the White Sox head Uh put together a pretty compelling
package and certainly on on a per year basis of
what their offer was as reported by Hector Gomez, two
or fifty million dollars over eight years, so on a
per year basis obviously very very healthy, and in fact
that more per year than what he ended up getting
(01:26:28):
there with the with the Padres. But the White Sox
they had also signed his brother in law, DeAndre Alonso.
They had signed his UH good friend John Javi in Miami.
But in in the and he decided that the Padres
there are team dogs that they to your point earlier,
I think you're you're correct that they perpetually are a
year away from being a year away. That's a very
good way of putting it. Betis they are going to
(01:26:49):
get a lot better here in the next couple of years.
They've got arguably the best farm system in the game,
heavy on position players at the top, but the middle
part of that group of elite prospects they've got is pitching.
So I think their rotation right now is is not
very good. It's one of the worst in baseball, but
it's going to get better, and it could get better
not for having to spend a bunch of money, but
just by growing organically. The guys have already got an house.
(01:27:12):
So I think it's a good move at the right
time for the Potaries similar maybe um to win the
national signed Jason Worth as they were getting that Harper
Strasbourg nucleus in place all those years ago. Yeah, I
guess my. I have a couple of questions here about
Machado in that fit with those younger guys, Like I
get that you got Hosper, and everybody says Hospers are
great dude, good culture dude who they paid last year, right,
(01:27:35):
and you get Machado, who middle of your lineup in
his mid twenties hasn't yet reached his prime. That all
makes sense, But when you're the guy who's the face
of the franchise making three million over ten years, don't
you want a guy who's seen as you know, Johnny
Hustle and does do it the right way and has
a little bit better way around people and a little
(01:27:56):
bit more engaged in terms of leadership and culture and
character than at least the outside perception of what Machado
is like. That's the part that really I like, if
Mike t you want to give him three hunderillion dollars,
nobody bats and eye why Because Mike Trout's the unquestioned leader.
He plays hard. Every time he slides, you know he's
gotten hurt playing too hard, as opposed to Machado, who
(01:28:20):
kind of made fun of the idea of playing hard. Well,
it's a very fair question, and I think Doug He's
gonna have to answer that question. Manny Machado will with
the way that he plays and carries himself. I think
I think for better or worse, the Padres know the
player they're getting. The whole country saw it. His interview
with Kenn Rosensal about as he alluded to hustling or
not hustling was a very prominent part of the way
(01:28:43):
that we all watched the postseason, and uh it became
a major storyline. UM. I think that in many ways,
Doug I would say that Manny is unnoticed. I think
any any false of his in terms of hustle will
be called out, I would imagine immediately by by all
of us that watched the game at a national level,
certainly that the media locally in San Diego. UM, I
(01:29:06):
think to you look at the at the franchise they've
got in San Diego, in the Padres, and certainly I've
never lived there, but I've covered games there and they've
spent time there. The the icons of that town and
in that franchise, of course, most notably Tony Gwin and
Trevor Hoffman, two people who are in the Hall of
Fame and are revered both their ability and their humility
as well. And I think that that has been the
(01:29:27):
standard of that organization, uh, that they value that um
and I'm sure they are going to demand that of
Manny Machado. In his defense, and there is certainly a
lot to take issue with the way he presented himself
in the month of October. In his defense, he has
been and I believe this is true throughout his career.
He's he has been all about winning. He he does
(01:29:47):
he does want to win badly. I think that that
to me, from having talked to him in the past,
I can attest to that personally. And the second part
is you look at the way that he his journey
has been. He played in Baltimore where he was not
to find as the veteran leader that was Adam Jose's team,
and then he's traded over to a Marquete team there
in Los Angeles with a well established culture where it
(01:30:08):
was really hard for him. I think to step in
there and say, Okay, I realized you guys just wanted
the World Series last year, but this is my team now.
I just think that would have been asking if it
too much of him. So now he gets a chance
to go in San Diego. Um, it'll be in the
same dfield as Erik Cosmer As you say, one of
the great leaders that we've gotten baseball right now. Um,
I think that it's Eric is a very very easy
(01:30:29):
person to be around, and I think he will not
at all sort of dominating the Hey listen, man you
gotta fall in line behind me. I won a World
Series and you have. And I don't think that's it
all gonna be Honsbur's approach here. So I think it's
gonna be certainly a lot of care and building up
a relationship between Manny and and Eric to figure out
how that leadership dynamic is gonna work. But I think
that I'm willing to give him a chance. I I
(01:30:51):
realized he did some things and said the things that
raised a lot of life brows and that those eyebrows
deserved to be raised. I would just say give him
a chance, that a fresh start with a fellow Miami
and of course Native South Borda and every cosmos. I
think that that this has a chance to work. Well,
the work, I'm not sure, but I think that it
maybe has a better chance to work than many are
giving credit for. Right now, Doug Gotli show here on
(01:31:11):
Fox Sport Traded. That's voice of John Paul Morossy MLB
inside from m WIB on Fox. The big story today
is Manny Machado ten years reported three hundred million dollars
with the San Diego Padres. What now for Bryce Harper, Well,
it's a great question, and I think that the Phillies
certainly are are at the forefront of that conversation that
reported a few days ago by John Hayman that that
was where things were trending. Of course, that things very
(01:31:33):
much still uh not settled yet. For Bryce, I think
the giants um still could factor into this. But at
the end of the day, and I said this before
earlier today, when you think about the Phillies and and
their own hype that they really put upon themselves. I
mean so they we in the media than that too,
but they have bought into it and built it up
(01:31:55):
to they may feel that they're a little more desperate
to get Harper than than the it's hard to get Harper.
I think that's the case. Um, does that mean eleven years?
It might uh as certainly more money than what Manny
is gonna get. I think that's what Scott Boris will demand.
Uh And I think that Scott is a good chance
to get it. I think that at the end of
the day, Um, if you're gonna tell me that Harper
(01:32:16):
is gonna go to the Phillies for eleven years and
north of three or billion dollars, pretty good chance of
that happening. I think that that's probably, of all the
possible outcomes right now, very possible because you look at
where the Phillies are right now, Doug and and they
believe that they were closer about three four months last
year and then they fell apart. They've added real Muto,
they've added Sigura, they've had a McCutchen and robertson if.
(01:32:39):
I think they've had a good offseason already at this
point in time, but they can go from good to grade.
If they get Bryce and they right now Doug are
more prime to win than the Giants. The Giants they
they've got a first year GM and far anxiety. He
is someone who was always goping within incrementally and not
really gone for the big splashes. It would be a
pretty dramatic change of wors for far Hunt. I believe
(01:33:01):
for the Giants to sign a harperd to some record
breaking contract in light of the the early stages right now,
the rebuild with mannis some bump runner and only the
last year of this deal. I just don't see the
Giants um. I think it's a good effort for them,
uh and if if the market comes back to them,
I think it's a very reasonable place to go. I
just don't see them as being as desperate right now
(01:33:21):
as the Philadelphia Philiates are to sign Brice up. Is
the dollar tag going to be higher than many machadas? Yes,
I think I think per year it's gonna be a
little a little bigger, and I think the years will
be bigger, and I think the total tactics will be bigger.
I think I think everything is just a little bit
higher uh than than what Many is gonna get out
of ink, so that that could be eleven at three
(01:33:45):
thirty five, it could be eleven at three forty, but
I think somewhere in that range. Again, this is not
I'm not reporting, and I'm just sort of this is
an educated guest based on following the market. I think
that's kind of where things are going, uh in my
in my judgment right now, based on the uh, the
look of the market ason. And let's not mistake there's
there's a pretty good rivalry between the agents here, both
(01:34:05):
Scott Boris, who represents Harper, and then Dan Lozano represents
Manny Machado. And I said earlier, and really only half joking,
that that this this deal wherever Bryce signs, will likely
be broken about three minutes before Manny's press conference is
about to begin, because that would then usurp some of
Manny's thunder and put it on the Bryce Harper immediately.
(01:34:25):
I think that that would be the ultimate theatrical uh
work by Scott Boris, and and it would not surprise
me at all. Of that's in fact what happened, all right,
There was a story Jeff Passon kind of kind of
I don't I don't know if he downplayed it or
if he spoke truce in regards to this idea that
(01:34:46):
there's a hundred unsigned free agencies like look, in reality,
there's like fifty unsigned free agents. It may have looked
worse because it was Machado and it was Harper, but
the numbers are not obscene. What's the truth to the
market which had had reportedly stalled out and now obviously
gets back under way some with Machado signing. Well, Douget say,
(01:35:08):
it's a very good point that Jeff made. And and
here's what I would say if at the end of
the World Series, if if you and I had a
conversation and early November we said, Manny Machado just split
everything we just talked about in in the month of
October and all the questions about his character, he is
still gonna get three million dollars, the largest fugeon contract
in the history of sports on our continent over ten years. Um,
(01:35:31):
we would say that the probably the market is pretty healthy,
and that Patrick Corbyn, who's already at Tommy John Surgery,
basically had one full healthy season back. I was gonna
get a hundred forty million dollars from Washington Nationals. We'd
probably say, hey, the National Past times a pretty good shape.
And I would say the National Past time is a
pretty good shape. They're they're now. They're a handful of
guys who are stuck. Harper is gonna get paid, I've
(01:35:53):
got no question about that. But Marlon Candallas is stuck,
Craig Kimbroll is stuck, and Dallas Kikol has stuck right now.
From the time I big, I think Martin is gonna
be fine. Uh, he is a Scott Boris client. I'm
sure Scott wants to wait and signed Brice first and
then signed Bob with somewhere else, potentially with the White
Sox right now, probably want to make a bit of
a smaller splash young They missed on Manny. The guy
that I'm worried about is kimberl And and he is
(01:36:15):
not a Boris guy. But the indergy day about Kimberle
is that he's coming to be a free agent. He's
a little bit of an older picture based on his age,
just been in experience from around the age of thirty.
But the issue there is, Doug, We're seeing a change
in the way that bullpens are utilized and that and that,
to me is is what's probably at work here as
much as anything else. But Craig Kimball teams are wanting
(01:36:36):
to distribute the risk in their bullpen around multiple lenning
guys as opposed to the one deluxe closing where the
Blue Jay's funnel that money on b j Rynolds years ago.
Those days are over, and even the days of Chapman
and the jansk and in that money are probably over.
So I think he has stuck. Kimberle is probably worse
than the others, just because the overall way that his
(01:36:57):
position is being viewed, and I think Jeff is correc
that probably the number is closer about two dozen bona
fide guaranteed excellent, high end major league guys who are
still on sign right now, and again in a handful
of them are Boris clients who may well be waiting
for their agent to sort of clear the decks by
signing Harper. Somewhere in the cover of days awesome stuff,
John Paul Morosi Baseball is back, Mannie Machado is in
(01:37:21):
San Diego. We'll see what happens with Bryce Harper and
UH and Craig kimber and some of these other free agents.
Thanks so much for joining us and giving us your opinion.
Thanks Doug, My pleasure against Spring training games begin this weekend,
my friend. It's always a great time of year, one
of the time here. Of course, I'll be watching you
with some college was coming up as well. We'll see
if Michigan gets the number one seed. I've been watching
that in a little bit in the great seat of
Michigan in the last last couple of weeks. All right,
(01:37:43):
I got the radio call of the Minnesota game this
upcoming third day at the bottom. I'll give you another.
I've seen them in person a couple of times. We'll
see them again. Thanks so much, Jeffy, John Paul Morossy MLB.
On Fox, the Dayton of five champion Denny Hamlin won
at the second time. So you'll never guess what he
did last night to celebrate. I'll have him tell you.
(01:38:04):
He joins us next. But first, everyone knows Untucket shirts how.
Utucket replaced the sloppy smock look of an untucked dressed
shirt with shirts designed to be worn untucked. A lot
of people think that Untucket shirts fits so well they
must be made for bodies that came out of a
magazine that's untrue. Untucketed shirts fit perfectly no matter what
your body type. Tyler guys, shorter guys, thinner guys, wider guys,
(01:38:26):
even long torso guys. The Untucket designers have mastered the
proportions that determine how your shirt falls for that just
right length and the neat casual look for all shapes
and sizes that other brands lead behind. And now Untucked
has just introduced a new relaxed fit option for bigger
guys who want the same polished casual look of untucked.

here on Fox Sports Radio. If I told you about
(01:40:16):
my TV show idea of music, I have lots of
ideas from the TV shows. But but but here's one.
All right, but but here's one. Um one idea is
there are secret basketball games and leagues all around the country,
as you guys know. Like when I go to Arizona,
(01:40:37):
I get to play. Kurt Warner's got a gym in
his house. I played there. There's a gym in l
A where NBA teams actually come in and have their
shoot around at the gym because it has a replica
floor of the staple of Staples Centers in Beverly Hills.
The Bridge guys Jim and when you can't get on
the floor at staples. You just go to this guy's
house and they have some secret pickup games there. Um,
(01:41:03):
there are famous actors that have their own game. Cal
Ripken famously has his own basketball game that you gotta
know somebody to get into. And so I was thinking
of some sort of TV series where you go Jim
to Jim to Jim, and you bring some guys and
you hop in their playoff game that you happened there
in their pickup game, and meanwhile you tell the story
(01:41:23):
of whose house it is, why they decided to build
the gym, how they how they got the how they
how they communicate, the different guys that play in it.
You sit around and tell stories about, you know, other
guys that have popped in on their game, Who's really good,
who's not good? What do you think? Kind of like
a Diners, Drive Ins and Dives. I know, but I know, Buyer,
you're super into that show. So I just wondered if
(01:41:43):
you be into that sort of reality show. I Dan
is currently preoccupied. But yeah, that actually sounds like a
great show. I think people always like to know about.
So it's sort of like that a peek behind the
curtain kind of thing, which I think people are always
attracted to who. So the Kurt um Warner game, who's
(01:42:04):
the most famous person You've ever played football or basketball? With?
Jordan's Jordan, But that was at Jordan's camp. I got
to play with Jordan's um. I was playing with Kurt
Warner's game. Last time I was in Arizona and I
hadn't played in like close to a month. I mean
between coaching all these basketball teams and not really having
enough time to really really work out, so I wasn't
(01:42:27):
I was. I'm in good physical shape, but I wasn't
in great like basketball wasn't sharp basketball wise. We still
one should be point out we won every game, um.
But all of a sudden, we played a couple of
games and two guys walked through the door and they're
like ready to play, and one's James Jones. And of
course Kurt's like, well you got James. I was like,
well thanks, Kurt appreciated, but you know, and James Jones
is still looks like he could play, but now instead
(01:42:50):
of he's not a sinewy wide receiver. He's built like
a line but he's always been built like a linebacker
who played wide receiver, maybe a big one at that
six three coming downhill, still in still in physical condition.
That was fun. Who's the most surprisingly good player who
isn't never actually played basketball professionally or anything like that. Well,
I've told you before, Nick Foles a really good basketball player.
(01:43:12):
Most most most quarterbacks are really good athletes, all around athletes.
You saw the video of of Pat Mahomes. I played
basketball with Carson Palmer before. It's a long time ago.
Matt Leonard is a pretty good basketball player as well.
But Nick Foles was a guy who I played in
the high level pickup game UM at Equinox in in Irvine,
(01:43:34):
and I was like, man, how do I know that guy?
He's like six five six six. Where did he play?
Like Michigan State in Arizona is like he played Arizona.
I don't remember him, Like no football, that's Nick Foles,
Like oh oh oh, so yeah. Foles was kind of
the most surprising. His jump shot was wet, and he's
a big. Quarterbacks are big dudes, big dudes. Anybody, anybody,
(01:43:58):
anybody a little bit overrated. I mean, you know, it's
like all the skill position guys because they're super athletic,
think they're really good basketball players and a lot of
times they can't dribble bass or shoot. You know, they
might make a shot. I mean, I didn't play against
Randy Moss, but I remember what I remember watching t
O play at a pickup game, and I was just like,
(01:44:19):
he's just kind of mechanical. He didn't you know, he
didn't you don't play basketball at the time. It's hard
to be a basketball player. He didn't move as fluidly
like a lot of a lot of a lot of
guys like, well, you know, I could have been a basketballer. Yeah,
but you you picked the right sport. You picked the
right sport. Um. Look, Tony Gonzalez was Tonion Zalez does
not not necessarily a pretty game. But I remember this,
(01:44:40):
like five years ago. We set up to play and
I made sure to get on his team, and it
was just like growing up playing with Tony Gonzalez where
you know, I mean, his jump shots not pretty, but
he found it, finds a way to make it. He's
just an incredible competitor. He catches every basketball you throw
to him, and you end up with more points than
the other team at the end of the game. Sometimes
who they are in the football field is who they
(01:45:02):
are on the basketball court as well. Let's bring in
Dan buy or find out what else is kind of
going on in the world of sports is we know
what the lead story of the day is. Also just
trying to figure out what happens with Bryce Harper relation
to the Manny Machado thing. Uh damn what he got? Yeah,
the Manny Machado story is the big story. Padres and
Machado reportedly agreeing on a ten year, three hundred million
(01:45:25):
dollar contract, not yet to be finalized, but multiple reports
saying it's pretty much a done deal, even though the
Chicago White Sox had offered a contract that was potentially worse,
worth more than what the Padres did, but Machado and
his representatives going with the guaranteed money ten years, three
hundred million dollars for Manny Machado in San Diego. In Pittsburgh,
(01:45:47):
the Steelers are likely to move on without Antonio Brown.
In a meeting in South Florida, Brown met with owner
Art Ruining, the second of the Steelers, and twitted a
picture afterwards, but it was Brown who said that the
sides agreed that as best in both parties interest to
part ways. The NFL Network reports the Steelers aren't allowing
Brown and his reps, including agent Drew Rosenhouse, to seek
(01:46:08):
a trade, but did agree on dealing the wide receiver
Rob Gronkowski's wropped by Drew Rosenhouse, and Rosenhaus told the
ESPN that the Patriots ten end will decide in the
next couple of weeks if he wants to play in
the twenty nineteen season. Free agent tendan Charles Clay sound
a one year deal with the Arizona Cardinals. Former Lakers
forward Michael Beasley has had a deal to play in China,
(01:46:29):
according to ESPN, and former Cowboys quarterback and now broadcaster
Tony Romo has received a sponsors exemption to play the
A T and T Byron Nelson at his home course,
Trinity Forest Golf Club in Dallas. Is that will take
place in early May. We'll be back to the Dug
Gottlieb Show in ten seconds. But first, a word from farmers.
From a dog accidentally flooding a living room to a
(01:46:50):

Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series returns to action this Sunday
with the Folds of Honor, Quick Trip five from Atlanta
(01:47:13):
Motor Speedway two o'clock Eastern time on Fox, and the
Guy who just won his second Daytona five hundred. Denny
Hamlin joins us on The Doug Gallery Show on Fox
Sports Radio. You gotta go out and race again, like
don't you just you win the super Bowl of Racing.
Don't don't the brother get a couple of weeks off?
I wish no, you kind of go through days like this,
(01:47:35):
but I mean you reaped the rewards for a pretty
long time after that, so uh, it's not too bad. Honestly, Um,
you know the second one, just the sweet is the
first one. I definitely didn't have any regressive to win
this one, no question about it. Um. You and I
spoke on first things first over today and you shared
with people who for others who missed it. So you
(01:47:56):
get done the racist Sunday you win. You guys do
your thing where you go to steak and shake load
up on some burgers or actually you've got a grilled
cheese right, which yeah, who doesn't have a good good
grilled cheese? And what was it? A Reese's peanut butter shake?
Is that right? Yeah? Ye uh yeah, shake with a
spoon or do you go shake with the um? I
(01:48:17):
gotta make sure. Well, so I'm asking you give me
the rundown of the Daytona Daytona post Daytona five hundred.
What was the consistency thick enough to go spoon? It
was stick enough to go spoon at the top. By
the time I got to the bottom, I was Yeah,
a lot of talking, people texting, you texting people back.
So you get back home and you got like a
(01:48:38):
day and so you spent it. You had a you
had a you have an adult league that at your house.
By the way, the pictures are online, and I knew
you had a nice gim. I had no idea it
was like that. It's like an NBA practice facility. Okay,
So you wake up the next day, you won the
Daytona five hundred, You got a game that night. Did
you did you like work on your game? Did you
shoot around? Did you relax? What did you do yesterday
(01:48:59):
preparing for your adult league game? Well, so we actually
had to stay in Daytona on Monday night because we
had to induct our car into the kind of the
uh you know, in the museum on Tuesday or on
Monday morning Monday, so I didn't actually leave Daytona until
probably twelve o'clock or so. Uh. In our league, you know,
we play on Monday nights, and we started sixty there's
(01:49:21):
a six story game, an thirty game, and uh we
have forty minute running well twenty minute hals running clock.
And then we were the first game of the night
because I had to come to New York um last
night because I had started six am this morning up here,
so I'm like, hey, we need to move from the
first game the last name of the first game. They
(01:49:43):
went out there, played in our basketball league, and then
ran up to New York to New York last night.
So it's been pretty busy. And then needless to say,
I love that you dropped thirty one. You dropped thirty one,
you know after winning the daytime, like you're just running.
You should go to Vegas in between as well. You're
running this kind of fever. Really, that's that's how you
should feel about yourself. Absolutely, and like like I told
(01:50:03):
you earlier, it all started five seconds in where I
pull up from, you know, thirty some feet out and
and it's so funny that, you know, we have a
little group text from all the guys and they're like,
you know that shoal right. I mean, if it goes in,
you just keep firing because you know you're hot. If
it doesn't, I probably don't see another one the rest
of the night. So, uh yeah, we're still walking on
(01:50:24):
on flames right now. A right, give me the name
of somebody in NASCAR. I mean, you can't mention a
pit crew guy that we just don't know, but or
maybe you can give me the name who's the nastiest
NASCAR ball player that that had, that that dominates your
league that you have at your house. I know you
have all those teams, you got forty eight guys playing it.
Who's the best? You know? I hate to give him
(01:50:45):
the credit, but Offen Dylan probably is one of the
best Stipper because I mean, God says he's in this
you know, early twenties or mid twenties or something like that.
I mean, we we're a bunch of uh, you know,
thirties to forties. We got a couple of guys fifty
years old, and uh in this league, so um, yeah,
he runs around. You know, he's a turmpoint guard, so
he's you know, pretty much faster than everybody else. So um,
(01:51:09):
you know he's definitely a guy that's tough the guard.
Well that's good because it's it's good because last year, right,
he beat you for the Daytona and and so I'm
sure in addition, not only did you have to did
you have to know that every time you got on
the track, but then every time you guard him in basketball, like, oh,
now I gotta guard the guy that beat me on
the restart as well. And he's a good ball player
(01:51:31):
that had to suck even worse. It was terrible. It
was absolutely terrible knowing that, you know, I had to
go back to the gym last year after he had
just wonted. And uh, you know he he doesn't hurt
from confidence at all either. So uh, it's it's definitely
a little flash at times. But uh, we we seam
up pretty good earlier this season, and and now we
(01:51:52):
got we kept the trophy back at home where it
really belongs. Denny Hamlin joining us on the Doug Gotlib
Show on Fox Sports Radio. I didn't know I saw
you on somebody else's show. You you call up MJ
Live on the show. What was his reaction? Yeah, I
mean they're like, hey, let's just call him, and of
course I'm like, okay, sure, and I'm thinking, well, there's
(01:52:14):
no way he's gonna answer anyway. And of course he
he did that. You know, that's the ten percent chance
that that was simply because I mean we don't talk.
I mean, who really talks on the phone much anyway.
It's supposed to mostly from text. But you know, he
was just like, you know, man, he was, you know,
talking about how exciting he was, but you know, he
sees a five wind see in ahead of us this year.
So he was proud of us, you know, for bouncing
(01:52:35):
back after top of your last year. So I'm telling
me many the guys an avid NASCAR fan and something
people never knew. Okay, if I'm going to indoctrinate myself
to Nascar, I have in my mind, I have two
tracks that I think most feel like Nascar. If you're
if you're out there listening tore like, all right, Denny said,
these are the these are the one or two spots
(01:52:55):
you need to hit up which is if you're gonna
do one race to say, like, all right, this is
what nascars about. Which race is it? I'm gonna say,
h Bristol with Talladega being really close right behind it.
Bristol under the lights, right, the first storm of the
lights is pretty amazing. Um, you know just I mean
(01:53:15):
you're inside of essentially it feels like a colosseum or
a football field and you're and you're running around there.
So I mean a lot of times there's a lot
of accidents for expands above anyway, and then tallade the
infield there is just crazy and nuts at the huge
party and uh, you know, kind of got that Kentucky
Derby type field except for you know, not the chicks
in the nice hats. Um. You guys did this in
(01:53:37):
the honor of J. D. Gibbs, who of course passed away.
Going back about a month ago. What's it like to
you're driving that car, you're driving the eleven car, right,
How are you able to maintain your emotions to process
all that was kind of going on inside? How do
your heart your head meanwhile go out win the race? Well,
I mean it's definitely difficult for sure. I mean you know,
(01:54:00):
there was a lot of emotions through the whole Gifts family. Um,
even before the race, when I saw you know, Melissa
and Jad's kids, I mean, he kind of just it's
it just yeah, it makes you put it makes you
feel like, man, you really want to go out there
and win it for them, and so it's tough. I
mean I tried to maintain the emotion that the best
(01:54:20):
that I could after the race, but it's stuff. Once
I saw them and kind of gave Melissa hug after
the after the race, it was you just you know,
I can't thank them enough for what they did for
your family, even though that you know, their families kind
of you know, not not altogether anymore. You you share
with me the story earlier today that that j D
discovered you at a short track. Um, do you remember
(01:54:43):
we like when when you meet j D Gibbs and
how how does it work where a guy discovers you
and they end up signing you? Like what was that
process like to get you from there to to being
signed with Gibs Racing? Well, it kind of started, you
know by I showed up at at a local short track.
I was selling my racing equipment to Joe Gibbs Racing
(01:55:05):
and Reggie White who was starting in diversity program in NASCAR,
and so I was there just you know, kind of
breaking the cars in, making some practice laps, making sure
they were stable for the guys to drive, and um,
you know, all while j D showed up and said,
you know, hey, I think we got stuffing here that
uh might have interested us. And so he was the
(01:55:25):
one that called Joe and said that, uh, you know, hey,
we got something here that we might want to uh consider,
And Joe said, look, I trust you, and uh if
he's the guy, then then we'll sign him. And you know,
fourteen years later, you know, we've got a couple of
days twenty five hour Championships in thirty two wins. We
we uh, what were you selling him? Wenches? Like what
were you selling them? Like? What were you like our
(01:55:47):
late bottle cars? So it was really just the short
track cars that we were we were we were I
was driving, So Gibbs wasn't you know, when they started
this new race team with Reggie White, they weren't buying
new car as an equipment. They were buying our cars
and we were going to build new cars anyway. So
we were selling all of our equipment to them. Huh.
(01:56:08):
Um did who called you to offer you the deal
to sign? Was it? Joe was a j D. It
was d D. He was on point of contact through
the entire process. Joe was still back at the Redskins
at his second stint, uh with the Redskins, and so
um he was the one who came to me and
and says, you know, I'll be your point of contact,
(01:56:29):
and you know when something comes up here, you can
just give me a call and we'll super can't work
it out to to uh? To Dayton of five hundreds later,
winning the second one, that's like winning your second super Bowl,
winning your second on anything, second major in golfing or
your big golfer? Right, doesn't that solidify you as uh?
In spite of all the thirty that's a thirty second win,
like winning your second day to It's not. It ain't
(01:56:50):
a fluke. It's the real thing, correct. I agree with
that a percent? And I mean we all know it's
extremely hard to win. That's why only there's only and
a few of them do it multiple times. But uh,
you know it's not a fluke when you continually put
yourself up there and this one certainly validates everything that
we've done. All Right, Denny, I want to get in
(01:57:11):
on a pickup game at some point in your house.
In the meantime, go out and win in Atlanta. Continue
to to load up with those trophies. We appreciate you
joining us on Fox Sports Radio. All right, I appreciate it. Man.
Thank you. Denny Hamlin joining us on the Doug Gottlip Show.
How great is that? Right? You want to talk about
having your life your priorities, right, listen, Fellas. I know,
I know, I got the late game, but it's my gym,
(01:57:33):
it's my league. We're gonna move up on and play
the early game because I gotta catch a flight to
New York because I gotta get up at six in
the morning. I mean, I love it. In sports, you

wait for the NBA season to kick back off. We
do have this many Machadow news. I want to get
to that part of all the stories we have lined
up for Dan Buyer in the press, the press. You
might not be able to get a new car with
your tax refund, but you can make your car feel
like it's brand new. All it needs a great paint job.
Coming to Mako today and get your dream paint job.
(01:59:09):
During their tax season sales event. Dan buyer go By
Machado gets a ten year, three hundred million dollar deal
from the Padres, according to reports, that includes an opt
out after the fifth year. Dodgers President of Baseball Ops
Andrew Friedman asked about the signing of Machado today. Of course,
Machado ended last year with l A saying quotes, obviously
(01:59:31):
they are taking a big swing. It's great for many,
great for the Padres, end quotes. But the Padres getting
many Machado, according to reports, m um, yeah, I mean, look,
it had to be a team that was not a
brand name team. The only way to get you you
gotta overpay. It's like a tax that you pay. And
(01:59:53):
while people think the Dodgers gotta pay attacks, the Yankees
gotta pay attacks because everyone knows they have the money
to do so. The truth is they've been able to
win without Machado and obviously the relationship. But my my
questions with this are, boy, it feels like you're kind
of jumping ahead of things with the Padres. Maybe they
(02:00:13):
felt like they had to, but don't you need pitching,
don't you need bullpen? Aren't you still at least a
year away? From so many of these position players being ready,
and the position players are gonna look up to the
guy who's making all the money and his many Machado,
the guy you want them to look up to. I
know they have Eric Hosper, who everybody respects, and it
feels like you overspent on Hosper. But you've got a
(02:00:33):
lot of intangibles with it. Those intangibles I'm not sure
you have with Manny Machado. Tell me these deals. That
makes sense. You know Robbie Cano. This this feels like
a Robbie Cano sort of deal. And we know how
that ended. Today's the first day of the teams can
start to use the franchise tag on their players. They
have until from now until March five. Franchise take candidate
(02:00:54):

Cowboys place it on the defensive end of the Kansas
City Star says Chiefs are likely to use it on

they sign on the line, not over the line. On Uh,
that's that's cheap. Doug accurate, but cheap. Not for Kansas
(02:01:18):
City sports business journal. Way too soon, nobody, you know,
the Saints call gets talked about, I think much more
than the off sides. But whenever we talked d Ford,
you know that always pops up. But that game was
more over than than the Saints rams was uh. Saints
Business or Sports Business Journal reports that if ESPN wants
(02:01:39):
better games for Monday Night Football and a possible Super Bowl,
putting the games on ABC maybe their only choice. The
reports is the NFL looks at the Monday night football
package as a cable package, and a return to network
TV could be the only thing to change that, which
is interesting because it's actually two separate companies, right, Like
that's a and and And one of the reasons that
(02:02:01):
they do it is because that drives viewership to ESPN,
like the whole idea of ESPN and I would guess
that the hybrid of it, that is, can they try
and do the NFL network model where they broadcasted on both.
I'm sure the NFL would love that, ESPN would not,
But this is a hard one, Like, look, if you
you want the Super Bowl, you gotta put it on
network TV, because there apparently are people out there who
(02:02:24):
only get network TV. Do you know any of these people? Oh?
I don't I don't, although I don't either, I don't,
but but these people exist, and so like I understand it,
Like there's there's a good ten million people out there
that don't get cable TV, or or more that don't
get take cable TV, that will watch the Super Bowl.
(02:02:45):
We'll watch um Monday night football games. But you're gonna
cannibalize your ratings on ESPN. That's ESPN has to have
NFL football in order to command what it commands on
the market, um, you know from for their subscriber fees.
Road football talk dot com says even though the Jaguars
at a five and eleven season and eighteen they are
raising ticket prices by two point four percent next season,
(02:03:08):
it'll be there twenty five season in the league. The
report says. The Jaguars, though still love the lowest ticket
prices in the NFL, can't get right, Well, they got
a bit of better product out there. They won't raise
ticket prices the London soon to be London slash Jacksonville Jaguars.
That's a that's a weird thing for them to be
raising them after this disastrous season. In the ESPN report
(02:03:30):
revealed how former NBA referee Tim Donnie heat fixed games
when he was an official in the league some fifteen
or so years ago. Did you see this, Doug. Some
of the examples that they had, including donnahe calling twelve
straight fouls against the Sonics in a close game against
the Mavericks as Dallas was favored by eight. He also
called four follows on Vince Carter of the nets, including
(02:03:51):
one from the other side of the floor when the
Raptors were favored in that game against the intended New
Jersey net give away. It's a stunner that he got caught. Um,
But it is interesting because remember the NFL, the NBA
came out and said he did not he did not
fix games, even though he may have tried to. So
it's kind of interesting that that this kind of debunks
(02:04:12):
what was sold by the NBA in terms of his
level of success in throwing these games. And finally, it's
the talk that's dominant of the producer's room today, Doug
TMZ saying Tristan Thompson was dumped by Chloe Kardashian after
he cheated on her with Kylie Jenners, John and Ryan
back and forth on this Uh, this big happening in
(02:04:34):
the world of sports. Um so where is where is Ryan?
Where are you in this? I just think it's shocking.
I almost can't believe it. That's a fact. And where
are you in this one? John? I should have seen
it from eighty miles away. Yeah, you do understand their
star Kasmin Ryan Music's voice, right, that's a fact. Not
(02:04:56):
even the least bit surprised backing out there and pressed
that it was no press alright, So uh, Manny Machado
is now a padre? What happens to Bryce Harper? Then
we can go back to not caring about baseball again,
right until until you know Mike Trout who said I
can't tell the future. That wasn't exactly a strong statement
(02:05:17):
of support with you, with you for the Angels. What
are you gonna be in a couple of years when
your contract guns out? Can't tell the future? Mm hmm? Well,
will Antonio Brown post tomorrow? Find out tomorrow on The
Dug Out Leave Show.
