(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio and riding right next
to me for the next three hours. Tenure NBA veteran
Ryan Hollins, Welcome into the Doug Gottlieb Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. You could always listen to the show
on the I Heart Radio app. And boy, Ryan, a
(00:42):
lot to get to today. Zion, Here's Zion there, Zion everywhere,
as the potential number one overall pick plays less than
a minute and last that's game against North Carolina injures
his knee in that loss, and now the speculation running
rampant about what should happened, who was to blame, who
was at faults, and what Zion Williamson should do. Amazing
(01:05):
to see what transpired in the forty seconds that he
played last night, Dan, just before it happened, Before it happened.
I don't want to say I'm I was a mind reader,
because what is it? This is a bad mind reading thing,
because my thoughts were as I'm collecting it, and I
don't know if you've seen it. I have very strong
(01:27):
feelings as a former collegiate athlete, as a as a
guy who who's been there before and and done it,
and I feel like college isn't for everybody. Now I'm
a guy that college was for me. All four years
were for Ryan Islands. Okay, I needed him, Okay, And
I'm some guys need eight, you know, I mean need
(01:47):
eight or nine. But yeah, to your point, wouldn't. But
when you look at the overall grand scheme of things,
and we're gonna get to this later on in the
show they charged us for tickets. I can't tell you
how much Zion himself has re created this resurgence of
college basketball. I can't turn on my TV without seeing
(02:11):
Duke basketball because of Zion and having some type of
peaked interests in college that I haven't had in some time. Honestly,
it's it's been a minute. And to know that he's
not being paid, and some can make this big uproar
all he get paid. He's getting paid it's a scholarship,
it's per diem. His housing, he has board. Like I
(02:32):
just said, it's per diem. It's pretty diem. If God forbid,
and I only think it's a sprain his knee had
gone out, this kid would have left a billion dollars
on the table because he's spent a year in college.
Now you can also say the rewards beyond everything towards
his professional career, he got to learn from one of
(02:52):
the greatest coaches we've ever seen in basketball period, in
Coach k And I can say that because he's got
the respect of lebron Co be all those guys from
the Olympic. He's already a household names. Yeah, Zion, I
mean it's a unique name anyway, there's no other Zion's
out there. He's got that going for. I just hated Dan.
I just I just hated to my to my core
(03:13):
that this kid is making nothing, and not just that
the system is the system, but how it's blown up
around him. Because you guys see money and advertisements and
sales and tickets out and tickets ain't nothing compared to
the TV money that this kid's dunks and highlights have
brought in in the viewership and he makes nothing. It
kills me to my core. Okay, now, this is a
(03:36):
message that I had heard last night and read on Twitter,
and I've heard all that Ryan. I said it before
the game. I put it out and it's a conversation
even before he was injured, because of all that he
was doing as a college basketball player. But this is
where I think you're missing the boat, and everyone's missing
the boat. This isn't an n C Double A issue.
(03:59):
And he many who went on social media last night
was complaining about Zion Williamson. Look at what the n
C Double A has done to you. Then Double A
did nothing to Zion Williamson except give him an opportunity
to play college basketball for a year. If anybody is
to blame for Zion Williamson's injury last night, it is
the NBA and the NBA Players Association, because it is
(04:22):
them and not the n Double A that has put
a rule in that does not allow players to enter
the association until they are a year removed from playing
in high school. And that is the only reason why
Zion Williamson is at Duke. Last night's injury had nothing
to do with the n C Double a. It had
nothing to do with paying players, It had nothing to
(04:43):
do with compensating them for their likeness. That had nothing
to do with it. If the NBA didn't have the
rule of forcing a player to stay out of their
league for a year until they were that year removed.
If that wasn't there, Zion Williamson would be in the
NBA right now. The only reason he is at Duke
is because he can't be in the NBA. So last night,
(05:05):
with everybody complaining about paying college players and and his
likeness and how much Duke is making off of him,
I I can argue that as well, But the fact
is is the points are misguided and they're not relevant.
They're not connected. The NBA was the reason. The NBA
is the reason why Zion Williamson was in Durham last
night and not in the NBA. So me and you
(05:27):
decide to put on our ski mask and there's that
good old Starbucks down the way, chilling the car. We're
about to hit the leg, chilling the car going on,
We're gonna steal from Starbucks. Okay, you're chilling the car,
I'm gonna go robbing Starbucks. And when I come out,
(05:47):
you hit the gas you floorid, all right, you Florida,
We're out of here. Who's guilty me or you? Well,
I think it's a team efforts there of I'm driving
the getaway car and you would be robbing the stars.
How I feel that. That's that's how I feel about
the NBA right now. And I'm gonna give you some
angles to that, because I've had defined talks with Commissioner.
(06:09):
I was a board member with the n b p
A represented my team for a number of years. I've
said in hours of those those meetings, and the problem
was you're getting NBA coaches in the middle of nowhere
in these high school gyms, dealing with handlers au coaches.
And it was a big effort in the one and
done rule, not just to say some of these kids
(06:30):
from themselves, but from the handlers, and to get these
NBA executives out of high school gyms and having to
deal with these people. And I say that to say
that there's now a time and change in Zion's energy
and injury, hopefully just just small minor two to four weeks.
That's what it's crazy. I think I'm a mind reader,
(06:51):
exactly what I said. I'm a referee. I'm a trainer therapist,
but look, it's time. It's time now. But I do
understand why the rule was in place. I get the
why the rule was in place as well. And the
n C double A is is not perfect by any means.
There there are many issues, and all of the issues
(07:12):
that you mentioned are legitimate issues that if you are
supporting a college athlete or or representing them or just
a fan of they're all legit. The problem is is
it just doesn't apply to last night. Zion is that guy.
Zion is the guy who could have gone from high
school to the NBA. That is the guy that Zion is.
(07:35):
It's not r J. Barrett, it's not other freshmen throughout
the country. Zion is the unique circumstance that can do it.
But to blame that then to say that the n
C double A was the problem and that the n
C double A should be sick for what they're seeing.
He shouldn't play it. They should be, but it's not.
But it's not there. I wish I had a better
(07:59):
word for this. Forgive me. Is that dumping jumping up up? John?
John Romas, do you have the dump button ready for
Ryan Hollins, bro I'm a clean guy, but when I
see it, I cannot. I wish my whole cabin. I
see pimping. I see pimping. And why do I say that?
(08:20):
Why do I say that? Because not only do I says, okay,
as you choose a zione, as you choose to come
to my university. Because and this is only for a
special case, right some kids, Ryan Hollins, this didn't apply
for you. You're glad to get your degree, okay, all right,
to a good school, so okay, neither here to there, Okay,
but look, not only will I not pay you anything
(08:43):
more than room and board, room and board, because I
was in When I participate in collegiate sports, you're not
gonna make enough to kind of take care of yourself
or get anything extra. My father essentially like had to
take out loans because I couldn't apply for financial aid,
but he didn't quite make enough where he could just
(09:03):
get me whatever I needed. But he had to take
out loans just to get me. And I'm a I'm
a scholarship athlete. God forbid. If I actually had to
like work my way through school at the time, that's
just wrong. That's just wrong. And then there's another element,
And I wonder how you feel about this. Not only
will I not pay you more than this meager, this
meager per diemn you, my friend, cannot go out and
(09:25):
get your own advertisements. You cannot be your own brand,
and you you amateur, all these other professionals around you
cannot make your own money. So Zion couldn't have gotten
a shoe deal if you went and played in Europe
for a year. Now this is now, but it's not Europe.
(09:46):
And and that's where the NBA is the problem, because
the n C Double A just gives them an avenue
to go somewhere. Kinda Liza Rices commission that was going
to clear up college basketball. Remember from the from the
FBI investigation, they had looked in and they said that
the one and done is absurd, The one and done
is ridiculous. It needs to go away. In that report,
(10:09):
it's specifically stated the only problem is it has nothing
to do with the n C Double A. It's all
up to the NBA and the NBA Players Association. And
and that's where the fact, that's what happened last night
through the misguided conversation of everything that you talked about
of athletes not getting what they're worth, not getting paid,
having crappy per d M. All of that is legit
(10:29):
and real, but it wasn't the reason that he blew
out his shoe last night and almost injured as me.
You you weren't in the getaway car. Somehow you're you're
excluding yourself from the getaway called Duke's supposed to say, no,
we don't want you, because we don't want the bad
pub is bigger. It's bigger than Duke bro It's bigger
than Duke. And also understand the initiatives of the NBA
(10:50):
cares and his junior NBA. Excuse me, the junior n
b A is trying to clean up these problems and
now they're just gonna happen, have to happen a lot
sooner than later. They're gonna have to happen a lot
sooner then later. But there's no way that we see
what's going on. And you don't see the n c
double A as a broke system. And I completely agree.
(11:10):
But my thing is looked. Let these kids make their money,
let them get advertisement deals, let them get whatever they want,
because get I get it. If you don't want to
pay for it, And you want to say what's fair,
what's not fair? These aren't amateurs. Okay, well, let me
ask you this. If Zion Williamson could get paid in
college and then get paid in the NBA, and he
(11:31):
had both options out of high school, where do you
think he goes. If you could pay a college athlete
and you could then go to or go to the
pros and also get paid, where do you think he goes?
Pros say he would grow the most in the pro Yes,
And that's what was preventing him from going to the
pros is the NBA. So I get all the college stuff.
(11:52):
I just I think people are just completely missing the
boat on what last night was all about. And if
it's not my Saschowski and it's not the college A
d S and it's not the n C double A,
that should feel sick, should be Adam Silver and the
Players Association being like, oh wow, we almost he's gonna
be a number one pick, whether he towards a c
L or not. By the way, there was no doubt
about that. It's just when you're looking at the blame,
(12:16):
so much of it was directed at college basketball for
no reasons that had anything to do with last night.
Let me fancy you with this. Let me fancy I'm
just saying the NBA is making steps to get rid
of the rule. Tell me the steps that college is making,
my man to get rid of their pimping. What are
(12:37):
they doing? What are they The commission for kinda Liza
Rice was a good first step. I'll just know that
was putting band band aid on on a bullet wound. Baby.

You can always hear the show on the I Heart
radio app. Also check out Serious channel to SEV and
XM channel two oh three. Mike for Boston tweets and Dan,
can you imagine yourself in Europe doing news updates? L
(14:50):
O L. No one wants to leave here, And that
was in response to me bringing up Zion head could
have gone to Europe if you wanted to be paid
for playing this year. But my response to that is
the same response that I had to you. That's not
the n c Double A's fault. It's the NBA's fault
for not allowing Zion to play in the States in
(15:10):
the league right now. So if he wants to stay here, unfortunately,
his only option is to play college basketball or maybe
if you know the new rules with that they will
allow the top prospects and for Zion it won't matter.
But to go into a G league and and and
play it's just right now, the only avenue was college basketball,
and that's not college basketball's fault in my mind. I'm
(15:32):
just saying, Bro, I'm just saying, I'm just d you
are definitely driving to get away car. But we always
talk about intent. Okay, nobody's perfect, nobody's perfect And to
what I see the league, the commissioner, I have full
faith in him from the talks I've had. Everything I've
seen from him is that he wants to make change.
(15:54):
He's going to make change. Now. Has he made the
change fast enough? No, But I'm not gonna fault to
him because his heart's in the right place. When I
see the n C double A, there's no part of
them that not only do I trust or do I
feel is operating with integrity when you keep screaming out scholarships,
but you keep making money, money, money, And I get it.
(16:15):
That system worked for a while because a college degree
had real value. A college degree had and you could
go straight into the workforce and you were set for life,
be set for life with your college degree. These dudes,
they set for life. Nor that they want a college degree,
and nor are these coaches even interested in getting the
kids that are so this system is so far from
(16:37):
what it originally had worked towards, and nor are they
looking to change because the money, the money that they're
can I get some? You know what, you know it's
gonna wake you up. You know it's gonna slap you
in the face because thirty two dollars for a ticket
to last night's game. Wasn't enough hundred dollars one of
the stuffy check these money. Duke wasn't pocketing that. That
was stub Hub and all the other secondary tickets. So
(16:59):
if you get some numbers, some disgusting numbers on the
advertisement dollars that Zion Williamson had brought to the n
C Double A a couple of these ball games, you're
gonna change your tone because I don't. I don't think
you really it's not a reality, you know there there are,
So there were some comparisons last night to college football
in bowl games that we're gonna have to get to.
(17:20):
We'll do something about thirty five minutes or so. But
let's bring in Chris Mannock, senior writer covering the NBA
four Sports Illustrated. Find him on Twitter at s I
Chris Manno, say Chris, how you doing today? What's going on? Guys?
Ryan Hollins and I are trying to weren't maybe even
not trying to settle it. Ryan's on one side, I'm
on the other. I'll ask the question. So it's definitely
(17:40):
slanted in my favor. Ryan, should the NBA in in
my mind, I believe that they should bear a majority
of the fault from last night Zion Williamson injury. Who who?
Who gets the faults of last night's injury For Zion Williamson,
I don't. I mean, I don't know if there's even
fault in anyone really, I mean, in do we want
(18:01):
to really fault the Sneaker company for you know, making
a sneaker that does not quite able to withstand the
motion of a six seven two or eighty five pound
super athlete? Um is it? You know? His fault for
playing in these games at all these depends on who
he asked the nault for having the one and done
rule where he wouldn't be playing in the NBA right
(18:22):
now now, because look, I mean this is I'm writing
something about this tomorrow and then you're right this like
every year it gets without fail, it comes up because
of some kind of incident or something that happens that
sparks this debate once again. But you do have to
remember that, you know, there were other options available to
Zion Williamson, like if he really didn't want to go
(18:44):
to Duke. I'm not saying that the G League offers
a ton of money it certainly does not, but that
money can be recouped in a massive sneaker deal of
his own. I mean, you don't think that Nike and
Puma Adidas wouldn't battle for the rights to pay Zion
Williamson even while he's the G League. I do, so
I don't look. I go back and forth over the
(19:05):
one and done rule. I mean it, it certainly has
its flaws. But I also kind of grew up in
a time where and I was a ball boy back
in the day with the Celtics for years, and I
was friendly with Korleone Young and you know guys that
that came out of high school that that didn't make it,
and the countless other guys that thought they were gonna
being ready and weren't even drafted. So it's impossible to
(19:26):
prove a negative. But I do believe that the one
and done rule has probably stopped some kids from going
pro sent them to college, and maybe their lives turned
out differently. Chris, let me ask you a real question,
because I know you're a real dude. My man. I'm
a big fan over I'm a big fan of the
stuff you got. Going appreciate that, tell me, right, now
(19:46):
that colleges cannot pay athletes, because they keep singing this
to tell me that they can't pay athletes, tell me
that it's impossible, and I'll leave it alone. I don't
look in a in a vacuum. I think it's in
possible for colleges too cut up the pie in a
way that will make sense to everybody, because you know,
(20:07):
and I wrote part of this, you know, for for
tomorrow and I already wrote today, is that you know,
how do you do it? I get to hear a coherent,
you know, just you know, argument or a plan for
how you divide the pie. Okay, you want Zion to
get paid? Does you know that means Jordan Goldwire also
gets paid. You want the Duke team because it's on
national TV thirty one times to get paid. Do you
(20:29):
want Wake Forest to get paid? I don't know how
you you bring this up and then you go football
works even more difficult because the quarterbacks are the stars
of of that particular space. What I do think college
basketball should do it. It's kind of dumb that they
haven't let these guys turn off their own likeness. If IF,
thank you, if IF Nike wants to step in and
(20:50):
pay Zion Lanson. Is it. Look, I didn't play the
game you did, but I mean they're really going to
affect the integrity of a locker room if Zion's get
his own sneaker and other guys, I think they're aware of,
you know, the hierarchy within that locker room. And I'm
not saying that you should allow autographs signings after every practice,
but you know, carve out some time in the during
(21:12):
the calendar year. Let's call it during springbreak when when
you know these college kids are off doing something else
during springbreak, Zion Williamson should get to make appearances and
make some money off of being Zion Williamson. I think
that is a completely logical and easy thing to carve out.
Chris Bannocks joining us here on the Doug Gotli Show
on Fox Sports Radio. He's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Buyer
(21:34):
filling in for Doug today. Chris, is Kyrie Irving handling
everything the way that he should in Boston, because now
there was more comments as the media blew up the
conversation that he had with Kevin Durant in a hallway
or in a tunnel. How could Kyrie Irving handle all
of these situations better and is this any signal towards
(21:57):
maybe what he may do in this offseason? You know,
it one of the more puzzling, you know, potential or
likely free agencies that I've covered in a while, and
I'm pretty close to it. I'm based in Boston in
Milwaukee right now for the Celtics Bucks game tonight. Um,
you know, Kyrie has to put it this way. Kyrie
keeps making mountains out of a mole hill. He really does.
(22:17):
And you know, he could have not said anything about
the conversation with Lebron, but when he did, it came
across to a lot of people like he was saying,
you know, I was a jackass. Now you helped me
learn how to deal with these jackasses. It sort of
just came across that way to me and to many
others across the league. And then you know the the
(22:39):
interview with Rachel Nichols that he did over All Star weekend,
and then you have what happened yesterday at the at
the practice where you know, I think it's a fairly
you know, it depends on you asked the question, but
it's a fairly knockuous question. I don't think that that
Kyrie Irvan Kevin Durant, we're standing in a hallway in
front of everybody discussing the Knick's double max cap space.
You have to be I think a spec shill branded
(23:00):
gullible to really believe that they were doing that there
when there are so many other places that they could
potentially do it. Yeah, I mean so so so. But
but Kyrie, he hasked to understand that there's interesting And
if Kyrie had just said, absolutely, man, we're discussing double
max and Olympiacos next year, it's gonna be huge, We're
going to agree. You could do hug stuff like this
(23:21):
so easily. Instead he took he got offended by it,
which which I mean, Look, I've pissed plenty of players
off in my time, you know, with questions or whatever.
I can get that. But but that's not that to me,
Isn't It isn't a ridiculous question. You know, the internet
was buzzing, you know, for a good twenty four hours
in a lot of goofy ways. I know some reporters,
even more like you know New York based reporters were
(23:42):
the ones that kind of thing put that stuff in
the universe. But it's not a ridiculous question to ask
Kyrie what he thought about, you know, the stuff going
on out there, and said, Kyrie is like, the Internet
isn't real and is that really your life? And you're
just doing this for clicks? And I don't I just again,
I go back to the mountains out of Mole Hills. Man,
he could very easily diffuse situations. He's choosing not to.
(24:04):
Enough about Kyrie, Enough about Kyrie. I want to talk
about his teammate next year, Lebron James. Okay, you heard hey,
is Lebron James? Tell me? Tell me Chris. Is Lebron
James still the baddest man on the planet. Is he
gonna take this this niter, this meter Lakers squad to
the playoffs? Tell me yes or no? Come on, I'm
(24:27):
done betting against Lebron. So I'm gonna say yes. Um.
And it's it's part that the l A Clippers, you know,
their front office absolutely doesn't want to make the playoffs
for the reason we know they keep their draft pick
if they don't. And the idea that I'm gonna bettle
the Sacramento Kings doing anything like you know productive is
is not gonna happen Like that's just not I mean,
I love this narrative, Like the Kings with this up start,
(24:49):
you know, you know, great story. That's been out of
the playoffs since oh six, They've had seventy two lottery
picks in the last twelve years. Like they should be
a playoff team right now, not one nipping at the
heels of the fringes of the postseason. But Lebrons Lebron,
He's great, and I think it also means a lot
to him to be in the playoffs and not see
that consecutive playoffs tore again. Should be a dandy tonight

Gotleab Show on Fox Sports Radio. He is Ryan Hollans,
I'm Dan Buyer. Guys, I don't know if you know
that John Ramos is the new podcast. Did you hear
(27:43):
about this, Ryan, Yeah, yeah, Isaac, if you heard about
the podcast, all over social media. It is exes and
ohs and and A debuted a couple of weeks ago.
Here's one of the excerpts that we heard from a
few weeks back. Seventh grade was not kind to me
when it came to dating. Let me tell you, puberty
was in full force. I was striking out left and right,
(28:06):
just like Chris Davis did in when he struck out
two d and nineteen times for the Orioles that season,
third most in MLB history. So John is combined stories
about his ex girlfriends with the Baltimore Orioles. Yeah. XS
and OS is the podcast. So guys, Isaac, you're ready
for this? Yeah? Alright, Ryan Buckling. This is the latest
(28:28):
excerpt from the XS and OS podcast featuring John Ramos.
One of the most underrating years in baseball history was
Zach Brittain's sixteen season. Look his e r A that
year was point five four, and I should remember since
point five four is also what I blew on a
breath of lizer of the night I found my ex
girlfriend making out with a guy from Sigma Kai back
(28:49):
in So there it is. John was cheated on? Was she?
Did you think she was the one? In nineteen ninety.
You never know that long ago. But boy, that point
five four, by the way, that's legally dead if if
is the case, Yeah, John Blue point five four. Good
(29:09):
thing he didn't bring up David west E r A
in the world series which is XS and OS and
they can get this where all podcasts are available, John,
is that correct? Everywhere? Great podcast or downloadable subscribe? All right,
there you there, you are fine? John on Twitter at
j S Ramo zero six. We'll have another XS and
(29:30):
OS excerpt coming up later on in the show. Do
you hear Levian Bell is uh put on a little weight?
Ryan Hollins, Yeah, that's what Yeah, yeah, imagine that. So
Levian Bell sits out the entire NFL season and now
got word that he is going to be an unrestricted
free agent. Well, the New York Daily News says there's
(29:52):
just one catch. Levian Bell maybe two d and sixty
pounds and so that would be about a good thirty
pounds over his normal playing weight. So this is I've
said this about Levy on Bell. I've said he leads
the league in bad decisions. And when you hear how
many bad decisions Leviyan Bell is made throughout his career.
I think you could make an argument this though, may
(30:15):
not just be a Levy on Bell thing, because this
is the this happens all the time. Like if you're
not involved, you're going to stray away. Could you imagine
just showing up on a court and dominating after not
playing basketball for a year, My body would feel great.
But there's also you know that the adjustment of kind
(30:37):
of getting in, playing in shape, getting used to being hit. Oh,
we think about uh, what's my man's name, m des Bryant,
as Bryant comes back after saying out in the very
first practice snaps is achilles. And also think of other
examples of guys like Tara Owens, And you know, it's funny.
Tara Owens is one of the most criticized athletes of
all time. And granted he brought a lot on himself.
(30:58):
And that's my guy. He'll tell you that just as
much as I just said it. He was working on
the driveway, he was doing it. But I mean, the
dude was ripped the entire time, So you gotta appreciate
how hard it was for him to sit out. But
this is something, unfortunately I've never had to deal with.
Van Bill is a natural fat boy. He's a natural
fat boy. He's he thinned up those years in the
(31:20):
NBA to me in the NFL and in college he
was a big trucking back, but he slimmed down to
be nimbo. So you know, you got a question, it's
part of his natural kind of you know, movements or
is this is this something that puts them out? Well,
it completely miss like it. He completely misses the boat
on this. And this is a part that isn't talked
(31:41):
about of just being in a program. We were talking
pre show and our our executive producer Ride Music says,
it's the It's the guy who decides to work at
home and then doesn't start his day until eleventh, three
in the morning because there's the coffee, there's the prices, right,
then there's the nap and then it's like, all right,
let's get things going. And that's what happened with Levy
on Bell. If he's thirty pounds overweight, Your window as
(32:05):
an athlete, you know, there's better than anyone is only
open for so long, so you can't within that window
have opportunities where that window is closed and then open
like this is. And if I'm an NFL team, I am.
I am not only concerned about Levan's weight, I'm concerned
how it got there. And now, as you said when
you're des Bryant, I'm concerned about possible injury, which, by
(32:28):
the way, has been a theme throughout levy On Bell's career.
So it's amazing with all of the things that Levyan
Bell put on the Pittsburgh Steelers throughout their contract talks
and how he just wanted to stay away and stay away.
He didn't hold up his end of the deal. And
if I'm now an NFL team looking for a running
back in free agency and to see how different teams
(32:50):
have gotten their running backs, whether it be later in
the draft, mid round picks, I mean, I'm staying far
away from Levyan Bell as I can, especially to your
point of if this something that's been in his life before,
this is an enormous red flag and there's no way
levy On Bella is not gonna get the money that
he wanted. No, this this is gonna be tough. It's
a big setback. You gotta have discipline as an athlete
(33:11):
if you're gonna make the move, and you're gonna make
the move you gotta commit to it. But I'm always
gonna place blame towards the NFL as a broken system,
and I think they've taken steps even in knowledge how
broken the system is. Hopefully this benefits the next athlete
or the next guy that wants to hold out what
I say, it's a broken system. I didn't see your
(33:31):
best NFL and I get it. Understandingly. We can look
at Levian and say this was a poor choice. It
didn't work out. As a matter of fact, right now
it's not working out. But when you don't have your
best product on the field, I have to look at
it and say, there's some things you have to look
out and address, and you have. When you have that
my way or the highway approach, you hurt yourself as
(33:52):
a sport. Now, grant, I'm sure that money is rolling in,
but the only people that miss out are the athletes
and essentially the fans because I didn't see. I didn't
see the best Steelers this year, the best Pittsburgh Steelers.
Because the way that situation was handled, you know, the
NBA has their own way. The franchise player was set
to try to keep the best players at least on
those teams, so you could you could have guys stay
(34:15):
with the team and not go to a different market
or to a bigger market. The NBA has allowed and
saying like, Okay, you can get paid more at your
your home market, but this way is so team friendly.
I I don't think that the NFL is full at
fault though. If Levian Bell is putting on thirty pounds,
there's something. Listen, I'm overweight. It's my fault. I should
exercise should I got a haircut that I kind of missed,
(34:38):
messed up myself. But the point he says, I take
responsibility for it. So should Levian Bell because he's the
one that put on the thirty pounds. I agree, said
I'm I'm just saying the fact that he wasn't on
the field this year. The system should be it never
it never, It should never get to that. And I
understand from his standpoint. He said, you're running my body
(34:58):
into the ground. My production is top in the NFL.
There's no one like me, pay me like it. I
don't know how long I'm gonna have this window here for.
I had to talk with Todd Gurley about last summer,
and I go up to Tod and I'm jokingly I say,
I say time, man, all his NBA players, we want
to be NFL players. Man, we want to be like y'all.
We run around, we catched the football, we were joking around.
(35:20):
He looked at me as with the straightest faces, said no,
you don't. And he was talking about in terms of
just the abuse of their body, the stuff that they
have to go through. You know, it's disgusting. And when
I look at the NBA and what Adam Silver has done,
hats off Adam Silver. You see the NBA's best on
the floor. There's never questions of are you gonna see
the NBA's best. And apparently we're gonna see Anthony Davis
(35:43):
later this week. I think he's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dad
by today's shows brought to you by True Car. I'm
like car Shoppy, can't be confusing, not anymore. With true
Price from True Car, now you can know the exact
price you'll pay for your next car. So if it's
True Car, to enjoy a more confident car buying experience.
And if you see Leviyan Bell, that number maybe stretch
a little wider on the jersey. In the National Football League,
(36:04):
He's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show coming up next. Guess who thinks the NFL
is becoming more like college football. We'll tell you here
on Fox. From a hotter balloon landing on a car
to a load of concrete falling on one, we've covered it.
Talk to farmers. We know a thing or two. Because
we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers under
(36:25):
written my Farmers truck fire insurance, exchanges and affiliates products
unavailable in every state. He's Ryan Hollins, I'm Dan Buyer.
Somehow we had a colon cancer drop. I don't know
how that came in. I'm not sure. Get checked though.
I just turned forty two last month, so I am
(36:47):
going to get checked Ryan. Things can just completely go
off the wheels here on Fox Sports Radio. I've got
a Ryan Hollands story that Ryan has no idea about.
I'm not gonna tell it now. I'm gonna save it
for a bit later in the show. But the first
time I hear this is on here, you're not gonna
correct It's it's nothing, it's nothing bad, it's nothing bad
at all. But Ryan and I actually had. It's not
(37:10):
even an encounter, but we're in the same place at
the same time. I'll tell you about it later in
the show, but in the meantime, we'd like to play
a game. This is Game time side on the Doug
Gottlab Show. Hey, it's tax season. Now ask yourself. Are
you getting a big refund this year? Tex Layer is
set up to make your tax filing process fast, easy,
(37:32):
and they guarantee your maximum refund. If you love this program,
you could show it by going too. You can show
it by going go to tex layer dot com and
start free today. Isaacloa Cross here to play a game.
Hello Isaac, Hello Dan and Ryan? What do we got today?
The game is alright, guess who I like the right
This is where Isaac gives us scenarios and we have
(37:54):
to guess who's involved. Simple as that. Cool? All right,
I'm in. I'm in. Let's begin by asking guess who
thinks the c b A in the NFL is forcing
teams to incorporate more college football concepts into their NFL systems. Oh,
guess who in the NFL? Again, guess who thinks the
(38:16):
Collective Bargaining Agreement of the NFL maybe I should put
it that way, is forcing teams to incorporate more college
concepts in their systems. Jeez, I can we get like
a multiple choice? I'll take a guess. I'll say Bill
(38:37):
Belichick was wrong. I was about to give you a
Dan Buyer like hints. He is the baker of a
previous number one draft pick that would be Lincoln Riley
at the Oklahoma Sooners. He said that the Collective Bargaining
Agreement limitations on practice time, as well as the pressure
(38:59):
to seed immediately, make an efficient for teams to take
those young players if they're going to be playing them.
He said, if you're gonna pay some cat and millions
of dollars, are you gonna be patient enough if you're
not gonna do anything like he did in his college system,
and his college system is so radically different from anything
that you want to do. If you make everyone conform
to your system, are you going to be patient enough
(39:19):
to sit there and pay him all this money and
have him not ready to produce? It's funny when you
make a C, B, A and Ryan you would know
about this. There are a lot of ramifications that you
never thought possible eight years ago when they say, hey,
let's practice time for the players. They're like, yes, all right,
let's let's practice time. And now it could be getting
guys out of jobs, because there's so many different ramifications
(39:41):
that this could be one of them of allowing younger
guys to get more acclimated. But that's why you draft
the right kid, because even though I can't force you
to practice, a number one pick in the draft is
gonna stay after and get his work in. A true
pro is gonna get his working right, So you draft
the right guy. I don't. I don't think you worry,
but I get any wants Kindler to have success. So
we'll see if this translates for the Heisman Trophy winner.
(40:04):
All right, what's our second question. Here's a hint up front.
The answer to this has a Ryan Hollins connection. Guess
who gotta win last night in college basketball because an
opposing fan threw a stuffed animal onto the court? Uh
you know, Oh, I don't Ben Holland. No? What? No,
(40:27):
that is right? That is correct Mississippi State. Ben Holland
is the coach of Mississippi State. Just to clarify that
there's not a university called Ben Holland. What does it
say on the list's Mississippi State. I don't know the
coaches all. Hey, Ryan, what would the nickname of the
(40:49):
Ben Holland University be? The Fighting Scowls. Gotta got a
great I'm Brin Holland of the Mississippi State. You know,
love my gosh, can they've got great bodies. Have you
watched him? They hit boom boom, they hit guys, They're tough.
That's a tough kid, right there is that Reeves Nelson
hitting someone? No, I'm just I thought time time healed
(41:14):
all wounds. Ben Holland getting a piece of Pepperoni pizza
down the street. How would he order a pepperoni? The
slice of pepperoni like the pepper Crash. Get me pepperoni
and give me two slices. Take the oil off every slice. Okay, crash,
hurry up, my peach. Hat is game time? On the
(41:37):
Dug Gottlieb Show. Had one for two that wasn't too bad.
By the way. He's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Buyer. We're
in for Doug Gottlieb here on sports radio. Should he
play or shouldn't he? The Zion decision is next. Ryan
Hollands alongside me. That's in your NBA vet is a Zion,
(41:59):
Zion and more Zion here on Fox Sports Radio debating
who's had faults earlier, I say the NBA. Ryan's putting
the onners on there, is putting it on, is putting
it all on college sports. I'm telling you it's the NBA.
Is is the NBA has got the hand in all this,
and nobody is talking about it. It's it's so easy
(42:21):
to put it on the n C double A. But
the NBA is the reason that Ian Williamson is in
a Duke Blue Devil's jersey and not in say, a
jersey of an NBA teen. I just, I just, I'm
just fusing the system that doesn't want to change. In
two thousand and nineteen, I've seen change out the NBA.
I mean you see everyteen or nineteen did you say
eighteen or nine? Did I say I thought it was
(42:45):
like I thought it was a curve, But nineteen season
saying n C doesn't want to change and make it
too much money. Oh, we don't know how to even
all the money up that we're making. Sorry, athletes will
pay you none. We don't know how to distribute it
out sorry, we're making so much we can't give it
to the rest of you. Zion got seventy five dollars
(43:07):
a year from Duke that, then last night would have
been all right, I'd be more comfortable. I'd still want
him to go to the NBA. And I'm not not
pointing out the NBA, but the NBA's taking steps to
get rid of the one and done rule. Well, there
was a Darren Ravel report last night from the Action
That Works saying that Zion Williams Sana has an insurance
policy of eight million dollars if you were to fall
(43:29):
outside the lottery or past the sixteenth pick of the
NBA draft. And my point is that this is Darren
Ravel said that sorry to catch you off. I want
to know how he's even legally able to pay for that, because, okay,
let me give you I'm sorry for You're such a
(43:49):
great guy. Um. When I was playing in between my
free agent years, I would take out a insurance policy,
but it cost me about eighty grant, but it would
cover me up to like two point three million or whatever.
Anything hurt, anything happened, anything happened. How's he paying for that?
That's not realistic to me, Well, don't you think if
(44:12):
he got a loan for what three times, which would
be two hundred and fifty some thousand dollars, you would
be able to get the eight million dollar don't you
think you could get a two dollar loan? Considering what
is it is? See, that's what kills me. We're going
to keep it a buck here. You're you're honest guy.
You you tell me how it is. We're not talking
about amateur athletes right now, and we're just saying, you know, hey, hey,
close your eyes Dan and look away as we we
(44:34):
swirl all this money around. This guy that close your eyes.
He's not normals. He's not an amateur coach, is not
an amateur coach. He's a professional. Everything about last night
was professional other than the money this kid makes. Okay, okay, Well,
then should he play in another nonprofessional what you think
is professional game for if he comes back from this
(44:56):
knee injury? Because that's the other debate that is his
is ray Don? Should John Williamson play another game in
a duke of basketball uniform? I see it too lace
now as a business sense, and I gotta know Zion
more intimately. Business wise, I say sit out sit out,
don't risk another day. But there's integrity. I'm a man
(45:20):
of integrity. I'm a man of of morals. My word
means something. We talked about Levan Bell earlier. Right, Levan
Bill sitting out lets me know he does not have
the discipline at least it's it seems to have stayed
healthy enough to be on the field, to keep himself
in shape, to be running and jumping in in in
(45:40):
team atmosphere, which sets him up self him sets himself
up for the best possible scenario going forward. Because Zion
Williamson is not a finished product. He's not Kyrie Irving.
This is a guy who has to grow and grow
as he plays basketball. I watched what happened. Immediately, I said,
it's a nice sprain. He'll be fine, He'll be back.
The kids tried to play that game. I love to
(46:02):
see the fight in competitive nature. We call this in
the NBA and the NBA contracts, there is there's a
clause that a lot of guys have. It's called love
of the game, which means if you get hurt in
the offseason, I trust and know that you love basketball
and that you weren't doing anything detriment to your sport
or your game and your profession. So for Zion, there's
(46:23):
two different elements. If he's the kid that has to
show love of the game, if it means something, he's
not the guy who can sit out and just do
workouts until the next NBA season to be the best
sit out. But if you're the guy that needs a development,
you gotta risk it. You gotta risk it and put
yourself in the best possible scenario so that you can
be the number one pick in the draft and not
(46:44):
just get draft at number one, but you gotta do
some growing kids. Well, I look at Zion's availability for
that draft, and last night didn't change a thing. You
think there's really gonna be a team that all of
Auson sees this Nie Sprain and says, whoa, we are
not taking Zion Williamson if we get number one, Like
that's absurd, that's ridiculous. Kenyan Martin broke his leg in
(47:07):
a conference tournament game. What nineteen years ago ends up
still being the first overall pick in the NBA draft
with a broken leg. I tweeted last night at Dan
Buyer on Fox that short of Zion losing a limb,
he's still going to be number one if the if
the injury was even a serious tear, he still would
(47:28):
have been number one. Look at all the questions that
Joel Embiid had when he was at Kansas in making
the transition to the NBA, still was considered for the
number one pick, ended up dropping to three with injury
concerns with the Philadelphia seventy six ers, and still made
a load of cash and then got a new deal
from the Philadelphia se So this is this is minor.
(47:50):
And so when I when I hear people say like
sit out now, don't risk further injury, Well, what's further
injury going to do. He's still gonna be the top
overall pick in the NBA draft. He's not gonna lose
a dime of it. And I find these conversations again
of switching the narrative of sticking to the n C
double A, Well, it's not about that. Isn't it about
your teammates. Isn't it about the coaches that that you
(48:12):
work out with. This is different to me than Leonard
Fournette sitting out a bowl game or Christian McCaffrey sitting
out the Sun Bowl because of a risk of further injury.
When you're a college football team and you aren't in
a national championship game, and you're playing the Sun Bowl,
and you're using those two weeks to incorporate new guys
and bring new guys along in your program and maybe
(48:35):
get give them more of a look. It's okay for
Leonard Fournett and Christian McCaffrey to focus on the NFL
for the end or for for college hoops. Duke could
be a number one seed and win a national championship
and win an a c C championship. I think that
is something that that you owe to your your teammates,
so that when you're a part of that, And that's
why I think if Zion Williamson is healthy enough to play,
(48:57):
he should continue playing for Duke. Whether he's out too
or four weeks. Let me stick it to you right now,
tell you right now. Take the perspective that if he
reaches the goals he's on path to reach. Zion needs
improve His playmaking is jump shot and he's reps in
(49:18):
the NBA. He's got to learn how to use what
he has. He has it. When I say it, he's
one of the most explosive athletes and I heard you
say there's plenty of times we have ever seen if
Zion gets hurt in college, he will miss out on
about a billion dollars a billion dollars. So let's say
(49:39):
the kid gets three MAX contracts in his career. Let's
say he reaches three MAX contracts worth about what hundred
hundred fifty two hundred each, Right, he gets that? Right?
Twoch we talked about Nike endorsements, probably about a couple
of million, probably two d three hundred million from ikey
(50:01):
throwing a number a number McDonald's let's go down the line,
because that's what he's projected to be. If he does that,
is it worth it to risk that? As I give
you the perspective in a collegiate game over your boys,
I don't think that it's a I don't think a
billion dollars is at stake. I mean, I think the
same risk would be whether he plays in the NBA
(50:22):
in his rookie season and gets hurt, then all of
that billion dollars goes away, or if he was if
he was entering say his final year before free agency,
if you're the NBA, like if he was like you know,
you know, the different Favious isn't gonna sit out next year.
You know the difference. Let's say he gets hurt rookie
Ricky contract, right, he plays out three years, plays that out,
doesn't get the extension we've seen it happen. He's still
(50:45):
stepping away with forty to fifty million dollars. We're just
talk a contract as a rookie. He's marketable, right now,
there's a he's marketable. So now let's just say he
still makes a hundred and twenty a hundred and fifty
million dollars injured. All of what he's done already, we
(51:05):
don't even know if he the kid complain lick Okay,
he could be Michael Oliver candidate for God's sake. Okay.
So so you guys, when you're national semifinal in the
final four at u C l A, and all of
a sudden, Jordan Farmar is like, you know what, I
kind of tweaked my ankle. I'm not gonna go in
the title game because uh, I got bigger things ahead
(51:25):
as a player. And You're like, wait, what this is?
Time out? Time out? And I know it's a grand
scheme of things, but as as a as a teammate, like,
this isn't this isn't Leonard four Nett, and this isn't
Christian McCaffrey. This is more of a Nick Bosa with
Ohio State thing. But nick Bosa was also gonna be
out three months and had surgery to repair his injury.
(51:49):
I got, I can I can even excuse that if
Zion is healthy enough to play. I just don't. I don't.
I don't know, Like the risk of something so catastrophic
happening is so slim. I know there's a chance, but
it's just so slim. I just I think you've got
to play. I would I would like if a guy
just ducked out and said I'm not playing in the
(52:10):
national title game because I may hurt my ankle, I'd
be like, he's serious, You're really serious like that. That's
what I think that this would be looked at if
if you're another teammate of his for one tournament time
hasn't started, if this was a tournament game, I cannot
see him turning his back on his teammates in the
final game. Uh as we compared to Jordan Farmar, even
though jokingly, uh Jordan Farmer or Ryan Hollands would have
(52:34):
more to gain by having success in that game. When
I ask you, or we challenge ourselves, what more would
Zion gain from playing in college basketball? Nothing? He's reached it.
If we had any questions or if we had to
see what he is or what he could be, those
questions are answered. Maybe he slips to the number two
(52:55):
or three pick. Agree to disagree, team needs whatever it
may be. He showed it to us. Ryan Hollins had
to show you a lot. Jordan Farmar had a lot
to show in a lot to gain by playing in
a championship game. There's levels to this. He's on a
different level then a number of other athletes. So the
(53:17):
only place he can go right now is down Now.
Maybe if in the championship game the other number two
or number three picks arguable number one pick. This is
a show. Now with those two let's see who is who? Nah, bro,
that ain't it? So selection Sunday comes around, Duke says, hey,
(53:40):
we're gonna have Zion for the tournament. So then there
are number one seed. You'd hate to see that. You'd
hate to see Zion play anymore? I hate to see
him play. Not now what I would have a problem
with if he comes out and plays and he's completely
healthy and he plays and he shuts it down at
a bad time, it's a full commitment. You're in or
(54:00):
you're out. Don't play around with this because now I'm
going to have a problem. If you're getting information here
there and you want to play, then you play, then
you don't play. Kyrie Irving shut that deal down. And
I was in Cleveland when Kyrie was drafted, and I
see why he's play five games at Duke bro because
you knew what he was. But yeah, he did, and
he played in the tournament. He ended up coming back
(54:22):
and playing those those later games. And the Nick Bosa
situation the parallels. Nick Bosa could be the number one
pick in the NFL draft, but he withdrew from Ohio
State and didn't hang around and be like, oh, are
we gonna have Nick Bosa. We aren't made his decision
say I'm pulling out of school, I'm withdrawing, gonna focus
on the NFL draft. To your point, that's what the
(54:42):
decision Zion would likely have. So if it's going back
and forth, I think you're gonna see Zion in a
uniform again. He's Ryan Hollands. I'm Dan Buyer. Today's the
Got Leap Show, brought to you by Farmers. At Farmers,
we've seen almost everything, so we know how to cover
almost anything. When it's game time. Have an experienced player
to help you stay ahead of the game, but their
experience into play. At Farmers dot Com are Farmers. There's
(55:05):
only one guy that can keep Lebron James and the
Lakers from the NBA playoffs. We'll tell you who it
is next here on Fox. From a car landing on
a roof to a car landing in the pool, We've
covered it. Talk to Farmers. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two. We are Farmers.
(55:27):
Under written my Farmers truck fire insurance, exchanges and affiliates
products unavailable in every state. He's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan
Buyer in for Doug today, of course, Ryan Tenure, NBA veteran.
I am a thirteen year Fox Sports radio veterans. So
we've got, you know, kind of along the same same pathways,
(55:48):
just different lanes. Find us on Twitter. I'm at Dan
Buyer on Fox. You can get Ryan at the Ryan
Hollins Right, this isn't the first time that we've shared space,
do you know that. Yeah, this that gets before. Yeah,
well covered the final four team in two thousand and
six when we were just talking about U c L
a little a little bit earlier, So covered that Final four,
(56:10):
but also it was it's probably about eight or nine
years ago. I had a wedding in uh Dallas. My
cousin was getting married, and my cousin and his younger
brother were kids that I had baby sat for when
I was in college. Looked over them. So I thought,
you know what, the older brothers getting married, I'm gonna
(56:30):
take the younger brother. We're gonna go to a Mavericks game. Yeah,
we're gonna go to a to a Mavericks game. So
we went and again eight and nine, I think eight
or nine years ago is in March, and I'm like,
we're gonna get good tickets. So we got good tickets,
and I'm like, we're gonna sit by Mark Cuban, because
you know he sits by the players bench along that side.
We were second row behind the bench, and I saw
(56:52):
the back of Ryan Holland's head for a decent part
of the game. Yeah, so you had blocked my seats
when I was sitting there to watch the Wizards and Mavericks.
Do you remember that the time finally, because I mean
the big guys gotta sit at you know, the end
of the bench. But you you were, you were In
my view, I'm very active when I when I would
(57:15):
huld be on the corner off and I do a
lot of standing and moving and yes, and you know
seven footers can't sit next to the coach. Wow, I
ruined one of your big mounds. It was experience. Well
Cuban didn't show up anyway, so it wasn't even like
we even saw Mark Cuban. I thought it would be
really neat for my cousin and we had a good
(57:36):
time anyway. But yeah, I was remember Ryan Hollins was
there as well. Yeah, I'm quite active, whether the game
or bitch. Did you did you enjoy your time in Dallas?
Did you love Dallas? I did? I did. It's a
it's an amazing city like to live like, I love Dallas. Yeah,
I'll never forget that walked down. I'm like like we
were second row behind the bench, just kind of off
(57:59):
to the side, and I ruined your experience. You didn't
ruin it at all. It was great. It was it
was fun, but it was just funny. I'm like, oh,
we have such good seats that were being blocked by players,
which is something that I never took into consideration looking
for tickets. Listen, it wasn't just you, there were other
players as well. But the point, the point is I
always remember Ryan Hollins. Well, I get warned a lot.
(58:21):
I would be warned several times and oh they can't see.
And you're like, depending on how you fail, like well
to stand up, who cares? You know? Or you're like, Okay,
I'll sit down. I'll be a little more cognitive what
I'm doing. But the game is going you do you
don't think about that. I know, I know you guys
are trying to get that win against the Wizards, which
I think you guys got. I'm pretty sure we still
(58:41):
had it. We still had a good time. The Lakers
need wins and they need it starting tonight against the
Houston Rockets. Right now, l a sitting and the ten
spot in the West, three games back of the Clippers,
but they're sandwich the Clippers and and Lakers are sandwiching.
The Sacramento Kings were in the nine spot. But you
have those Mavericks two games back of the Lakers for
(59:02):
the tent spot in the West. The Temple Offs are
just a game back of l a for number ten.
As well, the Lakers have one of the tougher schedules,
at least ninth toughest schedule of any team in the NBA,
So there are some roadblocks for this team to make
the playoffs. But do you say that there is one
guy only keeping the Lakers from the postseason and that
guy is or could keep the Lakers from the postseason.
(59:26):
That guy would be you don't know who it is.
Up look man, look, Listen up. Listen up, Listen up.
The only person that will keep the Lakers from being
in the postseason or not being in the postseason is Lebron.
(59:47):
Why why would I say that? I've only seen Lebron
single handedly takeover games year after year my entire stint
in the NBA. And it draws me to a moment
where back in two thousand and twelve, I believe to
I'm dating myself. I'm all over the I'm horrible with
(01:00:08):
day Stan. You know this, that's why you got back then. Anyways,
in the playoffs, when I played for Boston We're up
three two at home with an opportunity to close out
and go to the NBA Finals, And within that game,
I saw Lebron become Lebron. Granted the name King James.
We didn't respect Lebron. We didn't believe that he would
(01:00:31):
show up in a big moment. We didn't believe Lebron
would do anything that he had done, And in that
moment I realized how good he was. He had one
of those performances that you cannot recreate, and we double
teamed Lebron, We triple teamed him. We did everything we could.
When you talk about perfect defense, is one of the
most elite defensive units and teams in squads that I
(01:00:53):
had ever been a part of my entire basketball knowledge,
and what he did against us, I can't compare to
anything else other than take my hat off against the
guy was competing against and at that time didn't respect
and give him the ultimate respect. And last year's NBA
playoffs I had the privilege of covering the playoffs and
(01:01:14):
the finals. Intimately, uh, I have never seen anything like
it in such adversity of what Lebron was able to
achieve in that running, you can say that he didn't
see the best of the best down the stretch, but
what he did single handed, Dan, there's there's nothing like it.
So to say that he can't get into the playoffs, Bro,
but I'm talking about winning the in the playoffs. Let's
(01:01:36):
let's hear Lebron's thoughts on what the Lakers have to
face down the stretch. Um, my level of intensity has
to be now. Unfortunately for me, because I don't like
to do it at such an early time, I'm a
little bit different. But it's been activated. So look forward
to seeing what we can do. Okay, so it's been activated.
Is this the activation that you saw in the NBA playoffs?
(01:01:57):
Is a player that you think he's talking about what
I've seen it before? And you know, I'm a history
major at U c l A. Granted I did go
to class. For those who don't believe that, you know,
players go to class. I did go to class. And
you always gotta look back at history, you know, because
it tells you a lot about the present. Last year's playoffs,
you saw Lebron get to this moment in the midst
of chaos and and grantly, so you know this just
(01:02:18):
as much as I do. Dan there's a lot of
chaos last year, right, uh coach Tyron lou right, Kevin
Love trading guys are way the only thing yep, the
only consistent right was Lebron Lebron Right. So Lebron is
seeing this chaos. Lebron got to a moment and they
were flirting with ore the Cavaliers going to make the playoffs?
(01:02:38):
What are they gonna be? All this and that and
Lebron's final stream gonna come to an end. He shuts
it down zero dark thirty as he would call it,
and goes into this mode where he makes the playoffs
and takes his team to the NBA Finals. It's gonna
be the NBA finals this year. I'll tell you one
darn thing. I ain't ruling it out. Excuse me. I
would say Western Conference Finals. I will rule NBA Finals,
(01:03:00):
not Western Conference Finals. I'm not going to rule it out.
But it's it's just the the tables set that and
I don't see I don't see anybody as we look
at those playoffs standings that just truly stands in the
face when he needs it that Lebron can't be I
give the Clippers credit for for playing decent basketball, but
priborly to the trade deadline event, didn't show a commitment
(01:03:22):
to winning this year. It's not a bad thing. It's
just they weren't going for it. They weren't making moves.
You trade Tobias. Everybody would have to be healthy and
in the entire way to Yeah, so even though they're
sitting in the eight spot, I'm not sure how many
people can believe that they're gonna stand that spot. We
had christ mannix on earlier, you know, say the Sacramento Kings.
You've been waiting how long for this? For this opportunity.
(01:03:42):
I don't think you could count on the Sacramental Kings.
And if you had a Clippers Kings or Lebron bet On,
who's gonna make it out of the three? It's Lebron
every single time. Why do people keep like overlooking at
people just keep saying like, but they keep overlooking at
who would actually keep him out of the playoffs? All
due respect and like you bright, the Clippers are actually
deeper than they were before post trade. There in good standings,
(01:04:03):
but it wouldn't benefit the franchise to make the playoffs.
But look at the competition, right, Yeah, I just I
think that they're they're going to make it. The only
thing that threw it off kilter was the Hawk's loss,
because you're like, well, they should have been able to
walk into Atlanta and win, but then you're like, oh, well,
now it's the All Star Break. They just wanted to
get to the All Star Break. They have the Houston
Rockets tonight, who are going to get Clint Capella back.
(01:04:24):
We'll see if Lebron is activated and into playoff mode.
He's Ryan Hollins, I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Will check in to see how Duke how
far Duke can actually fall without Zion Over the next
couple of weeks, Alaska good friend Aaron Torres that. But first,
Isaac Lowenkron is here to give us the latest of
what's happening in Gulf and elsewhere throughout the world of sports. Indeed,
(01:04:48):
Dan and Ryan, we begin with the first round of
the w g C Mexico Championship, where Rory McElroy is
eight under through four teen, so he has a two
shot lead over Dustin Johnson. Tiger Woods is even through
his first eight holes of the tournament. Mike Garretfolo of
NFL Media reports that the New Orleans Saints are releasing
(01:05:08):
veteran safety Kurt Coleman. Garretfolo adds of the Saints will
keep the door open to his potential return later, but
he was do five point five million dollars this season,
which the team deemed too much. The Bengals hired a
giant secondary coach, Lou and A Rumo is their new
defensive coordinator. Adam Schefter reports the Ravens are giving cornerback
Tavon Young a three year, twenty five point eight million
(01:05:29):
dollar extension. The Bears released tight end Dion Sims at HL.

in the Please Please Let This Happen department. The organizers
of the four Summer Olympics in Paris have proposed to
add the sport of breakdancing. The final decision on the event.
Program for four will be made by the IOC after
the twenty Games in Tokyo, as I begin plans for training.
(01:06:17):
Right now, Back to the Doug gott Leave Show with
Dan Byer and Ryan Hollands in for Doug today in
ten seconds, but first award from farmers from a dog
accidentally flooding a living room to a dog taking a
joy ride, and we've covered it. Talk to farmers, we
know a thing or two because we've seen a thing
or two. We are farmers under written my farmers truck
fire insurance exchanges and affiliates of products unavailable in every state.
(01:06:39):
And and and Ryan back to you their breakdance fighting. That's
from Zoolander. That that line. That's so. If Doug says
that I don't watch movies, I do watch movies. He's
Ryan Hollans, I'm Dan Bayer. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Want Isaac to hang around. Let's bring in Aaron Torres.
You can hear him here on Fox Sports Radio Saturday
nights with Artie Span your Air. And a couple of
weeks ago, we had a big debut during Remember what
(01:07:00):
that debut was? Oh my god, how could I forget.
It was like when the Beatles came to America. Of
course I remember who could forget? Well, you're in luck
because we have another excerpt. Are you ready? Right? You
ready for this? This is another excerpt from the John
Ramos podcast XS and ohs is John discusses his ex
girlfriends and the Baltimore Orioles. Did I ever tell you
(01:07:24):
about the dream I had where I almost had a
threesome with some girl and Hall of Famer Eddie Murray?
Who Yeah, he's John Man. It's a reoccurring dream, Belly,
just like the one where you think you haven't gone
to class all year, in the exam is the next day.
(01:07:47):
And didn't Murray have a policy of not speaking with
the media? Oh wow, jeez? What do you think about that? Is?
It makes you want a little bit more, doesn't it, Aaron?
I don't want more? And I've never been more concerned that.
If memory serves me correct, Eddie Murray was, in fact
the switch hitter. Very good, very good stating facts. I'm
(01:08:11):
just stating facts here. I do want to let you
know quickly. Today show is brought to you by True
Car Online Car shopping can't be confusing, not anymore. With
dru Press from True Car, now you can know the
exact price you'll pay for your next car. So it's
a true card to enjoy a more confident car buying experience.
I'm sure they're pleased talking about John Ramos has three
sum dreams. But let's move on to college hoops. Okay,
how fi eron does Duke drop? How good is this
(01:08:32):
team without Zion Williams in the next couple of weeks? Wow?
You know, it's a great question, guys, And obviously over
the last couple of you know, hours, Really, this debate
about what Zion Williamson should do has blown up, and
I think part of it is somebody who loves college basketball. Look,
I get both sides of that argument. But if we
are actually talking about whatever that Brackett looks like, you know,
(01:08:55):
come a few weeks, I think this is a huge variable.
I mean, whether he is out an extended period of
time or he just does decide to shut it down,
which I don't think he'll do. I think we saw
what Duke is last night without him, and for all
the talk about the dunks in the highlights, like he
is by far their best interior scorer. Uh, he is
by far their best interior defensive player. And I think
(01:09:19):
it actually, you know, it even goes back that Florida
State game where he got hurt and Camraddish at that
buzzer beater. They gave up thirteen offensive rebounds in that game,
and last night you just saw that they had next
to no interior presence on the offensive or defensive end.
I looked it up this morning just to clarify. Uh
U n C shot sixty five percent on non three
(01:09:41):
point attempts. So I say all this to say, Duke
still has three guys that are gonna be first round
picks if Zion Williamson doesn't come back. But I don't
think they have everything they need to win a national championship.
How important is the national championship for these guys? I mean,
these are these are one and done kids. How how
(01:10:01):
like what does winning mean for them? And what have
you seen? Is this the kind of just hey, let's
parade around and so how good we are these kids
actually committed to college basketball? Well, I think Zion Williamson
answered that question himself. You know, when Scotty Pippen kind
of first proposed this idea of shutting it down a
few weeks ago, and he said, like, look, point blank,
I came here to play for coach k I. I
(01:10:24):
couldn't imagine abandoning my teammates. I couldn't abandoned, imagine abandoning
this coaching staff. But I think, look, obviously things change
when you know reality hits last night. I mean, I
will say, this is the one thing that I have
loved about the Zion Williamson experience this year is that
this kid is so talented and at this point he
(01:10:44):
has done all he needs to do to wrap up
being the number one pick. I've said it all along.
There's nothing he can do on the basketball court, good
or bad, that will will affect his draft stock at
this point. And so I say all that to say,
it would be so easy for Zion Williamson to pull
the Ben Simmons route to say what do I need
college basketball for? Either I am gonna shut it down
(01:11:05):
or I'm gonna hit cruise control. He doesn't strike me
as that kind of kid. I've been so impressed by
his demeanor, how much he does take this seriously, how
much he does want to win. But again, reality changes,
or you know, things change when reality hits and you do,
in fact go down with an injury like he did
last night as minors it maybe so it will be
(01:11:26):
smart for him to shut it down. I I listen,
I think it would be smart for Zion Williamson to
do whatever Zion Williamson wants to do. I've said this
all along. I stand by it. There is no injury.
There is nothing that could happen to Zion Williamson on
the court that would keep him from being the number
one pick. I truly believe that. We've seen Kyrie Irving
(01:11:46):
miss basically his whole year in college basketball. He was
the number one overall pick. Joel Mbid got hurt before
the tournament. We knew he was gonna miss his rookie year.
He was the number three overall pick. And so I
just don't see a world where Zion will Upson doesn't
go number one at this point, I think, look, we
all have opinions. Ryan, I know you played at the
highest level. Uh you know, yours might be different than mine.
(01:12:09):
Mine might be different than yours. But to me, at
the end of the day, I think it's whatever Zion
thinks is best for Zion. I think we just got
to kind of accept that. Aaron torres college Basketball Insider
for Fox Sports Radio. It also hosts with Arnie Spanier
here Saturday nights at eleven o'clock Eastern Time on Fox
Sports Radio, joining Ryan Hollins and myself Dampire on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. I'll just throw you into the conversation, Aaron,
(01:12:29):
that that Ryan and I have had for the last
hour and a half. I think that the n C
double A gotta raw a deal last night because everybody
wants to blame them. I I blame the NBA because
if the NBA allowed for these kids to go straight
from high school to the NBA, Zion Williamson never would
be in a duke uniform. Who do you blame for
last night? Yeah? I mean, look, I think Adam Silver
(01:12:50):
is the teslon man right now. Everything he does rolls
off him. I mean, this is the least competitive this
league has basically ever been. Doesn't fall on Adam Silver
yet stars basically it out for years, you know, in
the Big Games, didn't falling at him Silver. Uh you know,
this whole one and done thing doesn't falling at him Silver,
even though it's an NBA rule. Um, you know who
do I blame. I don't know who I blame, but
(01:13:13):
I do think there are so many layers to this story.
And you know, and look, we all do this. We
hop on social media share our opinions. I do it.
I'm as guilty of it as anybody. But I would
also add that anybody that thinks that there has been
no value for Zion Williamson going to duke for this
year is out of their minds. And I said it
on my Twitter feed this morning. I stand by it.
(01:13:34):
You know, you look at NBA mocked drafts from late
last year early this year, before the season started, Zion
Williamson was not the consensus number one overall pick like
he like he like he is now. Um, you know
I've seen somewhere he went as low as four or
five over the course of a rookie contract. That's a
difference about twelve or fifteen million dollars plus all the
(01:13:56):
exposure that he's gotten, which will inevitably land him massive
shoe deal, massive endorsements, things like that. So who is
to blame for last night? Frankly, it's probably the NBA
more than the n c a A. We all know
the n c A probably should alter their rules to
allow kids to you know, capitalize on their likeness and
things of that nature. But this idea that Duke has
(01:14:17):
not been beneficial to Zion Williamson, I don't believe that
at all. It's funny. It's funny you say that I
share the same sentiments. Break down a little bit to
me or or the Listener's the fact that Zion chose
Duke and the type of program that coach k runs
versus going to Kentucky and cal Perry, who's known for
(01:14:40):
having one in Dones. What what did that choice mean? Well,
you know what what I think. First of all, what
I think him choosing Duke showed, and I don't think
we knew it when he chose Duke is the kid
is about winning, and the kid is about sacrificing for
the good of his team. Because of those big three
guys Kim Radishtion r J. Bary, who I think are
(01:15:00):
going to be three of the top five picks, I
would be stunned if Zion and r J. Barrett weren't
one and two, like Zion could have gone anywhere. And
Ben the star and he still is the star at Duke.
But let's be honest, he is also sacrificing a little
bit for the good of the team and for the
good of winning. And so look, I know that this
is a hot button topic in the NBA right now
(01:15:21):
as far as stars lining up and joining super teams
and like all that stuff, But I also think it
says about Zion Williamson, Like, you know, he is not
just about Zion, He's about winning basketball games, playing with
other good players and being a great teammate. And so
to me, as far as which school he chose, you know,
I don't. I don't know if it's one over the other.
(01:15:42):
I mean, Duke has obviously kind of almost branded itself
better at the one and Done than than Kentucky has
over the last couple of years when you look at
the guys they've brought in, Brandon Ingram, Jayson Tatum, Marvin Bagley,
guys like that. But I think it also shows that
he has a willingness to be coached. Coach. K is
a legend coach. K is obviously a guy that's coach
at the Olympic level, at the at the high college
(01:16:03):
level for years. But I also think, like I said,
it shows that he wants to be a winner, that
he's willing to be a good teammate, and besides the
basketball skill aside, I just can't imagine a single reason
why you wouldn't want him both in your organization as
the face of your franchise, because what he has done
with this platform in college basketball is years incredible. I'll
(01:16:24):
say this, I'll wrap it up with Aeron Torres and this,
I think that the biggest lostion last night was the
selection committee because if you don't know zion status and
if Duke isn't forthcoming, it is going to be the
hardest seed you are ever going to have to do jockey,
considering you don't know if he's going to play or
not play. It's gonna be amazing to see in a month.
Well yeah, and I mean, you know, I think it's
(01:16:45):
really interesting because you know, people ask me all the
time is my team going to be a number one seed?
What does it all mean? And had you asked me
last night? I thought Duke had all but wrapped up
a number one seed. But what it also means is
one day and of course it means is Duke going
to be in a hundred percent? But also what does
it mean as far as them going to that second
North Carolina game? What does it mean as far as
(01:17:05):
them going into the A sec ternam it? Can North
Carolina now play themselves in a position to to the
number one seed? I mean, obviously Zion is the story
and he will be until we get clarification on what
his next move is. But from the basketball perspective, I
agree with you a d percent. Dan is it? It
throws a lot of things in flux going to the
final two three weeks of the regular season. Aaron, we
(01:17:26):
appreciate it. We'll do it again soon. Alright, guys, I
appreciate it. Look forward to listening to the full episode.
X appreciated. Find Aaron on Twitter at Aaron Underscore Torres.
He's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Buyer. This is the Doug
Gottleibs Show on Fox Sports Radio. Coming up next. Why
can't Big Ben and Antonio Brown get along? We talked
about that next. From a hot air balloon landing on
(01:17:50):
a car to a load of concrete falling on one,
we've covered it. Talk to farmers, we know a thing
or two because we've seen a thing or two. We
are farmers. Underwritten my farmer's truck fire insurance exchanges and
affiliates products unavailable in every state. He's Ryan Hollins. I'm
Dad Buyer. We are in for Doug today. Glad to
(01:18:12):
have you with us, of course, Ryan a tenure NBA VET.
You can hear me on the Doug gott Leap Show
Monday through Friday and Sunday mornings at nine o'clock Eastern
Time with Mike Carmen on Fox Sports Sunday. Just because
Doug is out today doesn't mean we're not going to
hear something interesting from Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports
One in a segment we like to call now Well,
(01:18:33):
Doug is now in the Twin Cities Minneapolis to be exact,
to call some college hoops tonight. He was in New
York earlier today co hosting First Things First on Fox
Sports One their guest Plexico Buris, as we find out
why Big Ben Roethlisberger and Antonio Brown don't get along.
I don't see how the best doing in football can't
get it fixed. Why can't they have the respect for
(01:18:56):
one another to really, you know, pick up the phone
and have this comments. They say, Hey, man, let's forget
the way to get this fixed. We have a super
Bowl caliber football team. You know, we're the best doing football.
Let's get this thing fixed. And for some strange reason,
they just haven't been able to do that. You know,
you're telling about two basically Hall of Fame players that
can't co exist together. I'll tell you why they can't
(01:19:17):
get along, Ryan, because one thinks that they made the
other one. So Antonio Brown thinks that he's the one
that made Ben Roethlisberger. Ben Roethlisberger thinks he's the one
that made Antonio Brown. Very difficult to get on the
same page when you have such opposite opinions. But that's
what I think is wrong in Pittsburgh. Entitlement all i
all I hear is entitlement, Uh all I hear is
(01:19:38):
poor poor coaching in front office decisions, poor culture. When
roethlis Burger uh first one his first Super Bowl there,
he was a young guy. He was he was learning,
he was he had respect for the veterans in the
locker room. Is somehow that same respect that he kind
(01:20:00):
of had to fall under and learn with and for
Jerome Bettis and Heinz warned those guys who are prose prose,
we're talking about professionals. He hasn't taken that same mindset
and approach that he's learned into the team, which is
now his man to man. You lead through respect, and
(01:20:22):
it's not about mistakes, because everybody's made mistakes, and we
can point out thousands of mistakes that Ben has made,
thousands of the mistakes that Ap has made, and also
their successes. But to publicly scrutinize the guy personally from
me being in the locker room, it's something you never do.
And even though it might understand it, I don't respect
(01:20:43):
it and I'm not gonna be all in with you.
So if I'm Antonio Brown, he definitely has a point
to point a finger. If I'm Ben, he's got a point.
Am I Am I wrong here? But I'm just it's
just wrong with so many And Todd Haley, the former
offensive Nator who everybody wants to take shots at and criticize.
(01:21:04):
This comes to the to the point of of when
you see the culture that you talk about, Todd Hayley
goes on Sirius x M NFL radio and says what
a joy it was to coach Levian Bell and Antonio
Brown didn't say that about Ben Roethlisberger and and and
so so we're pointing fingers at Antonio Brown and Levy
on ballot. Ben Roethlisberger continues to see and to skate
(01:21:27):
clean and as a Seahawks fan, they stole that first
super Bowl. That's not the point here, though. The point
is is Ben Roethlisberger, Yeah, plays by his own rules.
There's one thing about criticizing and and calling out players
like he did in the media. To Antonio Brown, I said,
there's one thing about criticizing players, or at least helping
them along to do it. And the media is a
different scenario. And and and that's that was another straw
(01:21:51):
to break the camel's back with it. I got to
hear from somebody else. If I got to hear from
somebody else that you you don't agree with something I did,
I'm not going to take that the right I might
shrug it off, maybe right, I'm not taking that the
right way. Men, man, I'm I'm gonna talking to you man.
Fellas here, real men. You lead by submission, You lead
by respect. If you want respect, you give respect. That's
(01:22:15):
in your household, that's in sports, that's at the workplace.
If you want people to work for you, you gotta
have respect. He's Ryan Hollands. I'm Dan Buyer. This is
the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio or
not not even gonna bother to back end it. Find
us on Twitter. I met Dan Buyer on Fox. You
could get Ryan at the Ryan Hollins. At least the
Pittsburgh Steelers have given us something interesting in football to
(01:22:37):
talk about since the Super Bowl two weeks ago was
a snooze fest. He's Ryan Hollans. I'm Dan Buyer. And
if you went to Super Bowl fifty three, I hope
you didn't pay thousands for your tickets like somewhere ripped
off last night and Durham we'll talk about it next.
And Ryan Allens alongside with me, Tenure Nba Vets. Does
(01:22:58):
March gets she excited? Does this March gets you like
that just this time of year? I know we're not
there yet, or we're a week away, a week and
a day away from March? Onet do is this just
kind of get you going? This just you know, just
kind of automatically gets your your clock ticking. I love it,
I love it. I love it. It hit to me too.
(01:23:18):
Even the weather I know it's in it's raining again
in southern California. I know people around the country don't care.
Pretty upset at the rain. It went rain, You're pretty listen.
I've got a trip to North Carolina in forty eight hours.
I'm gonna play golf, and all I saw on their
forecast was rain, rain, rain. All I've seen out here
has been rain, rain, rain. I just want some sunshine.
I think we're gonna dodge the rain drops in the
(01:23:40):
beautiful state of North Carolina. Fingers crossed though, So you're yeah,
I'm I'm not good at all. I love the game,
but uh yeah, although we did. You heard yesterday Doug
said we won the Farmer's Insurance Pro am at the
South Course at Torrey Pines. Just hey, s I gotta
ask this, like, get he had a good Doug story?
(01:24:01):
Like how competitive is Doug? Like he doesn't. I don't
feel like he has an off switch. This is the
this is and I've said this about Doug and he
may not believe me, and people may not believe me.
He doesn't play golf really that often, but if he did,
I think he'd be really good. So it's not even
a bad story. I think, like if he just said,
(01:24:22):
you know what, for a couple of months, I'm gonna
play this and do this more often. I think he'd
be really good. But I just think that he's got
so many irons at the fire that golf isn't isn't
a you know a thing of his? Is that like
a silent like is that like a like a deaf blow?
Right there? No, that's that's that's that's giving credit where
(01:24:42):
credit is due. We do. Doug did fall asleep once
when I was doing a segment on the show, So
there is that, But that was probably more my fault.
Do we haven't even fail? There? Can we replace some
of that? It was my fault. It wasn't. It wasn't
that exciting. I'll take for that. That's actually it wasn't.
(01:25:03):
It wasn't. It wasn't. It wasn't my fault. Wasn't. No,
it wasn't different. Bryan Music are executive producers. It was
during a break, that's what it was. Yeah, so there's
your little dirt that you have. But he was up like,
what were you talking about? What weren't you talking about?
It was it was it was we were coming back
from break and just oh my god, and their Sandman
(01:25:24):
a little bit too early. Yeah, yeah, it just happened.
And he did admit it on the show, right, he
did say that he took a little snooth. So we
have the beginning of the show and the music that
just kept playing and playing, and then I had to
jump in and say the god leave show a love Angeles.
He was on the road. He was on so he wasn't.
(01:25:44):
It wasn't like where you guys are sitting and he's
like falling asleep. He was in another studio. We're here
in l A. Just telling him like all right, you're good,
and the music is just playing. It was like Doug,
it was. It was quite a quite an ex perience.
I was doing radio with Max Kellerman before I was
quite seasoned in the radio, and he took a long
(01:26:08):
bathroom break, a very long break, and I had to
bring the show in and it's like, well we didn't
do any reads. I just trial by fire. Yeah, I
just I just start start right, start talking. This is
what this is what I would do. If you had
a long bathroom break, I would totally annihilate your points,
knowing that you would to defend them. I'd be like,
that's why you're wrong, Ryan, that's why you're wrong, and
(01:26:30):
I'm right. But that Gottlieb show here on Fox Sports Radio,
and that's when you know that you would you would
slide into the studio. So yeah, that's that's that's how
we do things here on Fox Sports Radio. So there,
I gave you a good and he gave you a
little dirt as well on Doug Gottlieb. How's that? That's good?
That's good enough for me. Hey, it's you sold me
out sold me bro Hey. I was just saying I
(01:26:52):
bought tickets to see the Mavericks, not the back of
Ryan Allen's head, that's all. How can I ask how
much they were? There was secondary market and it was
a late by. Usually on those things, people get worried
that they're not going to sell the tickets, and when
the Wizards are in town, there's no guarantee that they're
going to be sold. So I think it was probably
(01:27:13):
a couple of hundred dollars a ticket, but it was
late Yeah, yeah, it was probably just you know, you
know what costs more than that ticket? What's that some
zion four thousand dollars, two thousand dollars we heard for
Zion Williamson to see Zion Williamson and the Duke Blue
Devil's Home to the North Carolina tire heels. And this
(01:27:35):
is this is talking about money not well spent. That
was the theme. That was the that was the storyline.
A big storyline was how hot this ticket was last there?
Like like your guilty bad association. Right, you're the cool guy,
you know, no foo, no fear of miss right. I
(01:27:55):
get I get the I get the want to be
a part of the moment, but rare elite and I
mean extremely in rare circumstances. Does the moment live up
to the tickets? And I tweeted last night that there
is there is only one. There should only be one
four figure ticket and all the sports, and that's the
(01:28:15):
Masters for the simple reason because you don't go there. Sure,
it's great that Tiger Woods is there, Rory McRoy and
Phil Nicholson are playing, but because it's so exclusive, because
it's so perfect and Ryan, you get the whole day
to do what you want. That that's the only that's
the only four digit ticket price that you should pay.
Told me about this about told me you would talk
(01:28:38):
about golf. Duc told me you were gonna do this.
It's worth it. I'm telling you, I I am telling
you what's here, what's greatest? I mean, I'm just completely right.
He got me all my greatest what like like sporting event,
Like I didn't expect to beat it. Well, I saw
like magic happen. Yeah, this is I've seen a lot.
I've been fortunate enough to cover a lot of great
(01:29:00):
sporting events, and maybe that's part of why I'm jaded.
This is my fourteen super Bowl that I've covered a
couple of weeks ago in Atlanta. I've been to multiple
final fours. I saw in a thirty six hour period.
I saw Tiger win a US Open in San Diego
and then the next night see the Celtics win an
NBA title over the Lakers. So like, I flew across
(01:29:21):
country from San Diego to Boston and saw those happening
two days. So to me, that is like that's when
if I'm telling people about like what are the greatest stories? Yeah, listen,
I saw Rodney Harritt, excuse me, David Tyrese catch on
Rodney Harrison, and you know, Patriots end up losing to
(01:29:41):
the Giants. But it's that sort of thing and I
and I, and I'm glad that you brought that up,
because the Super Bowl is a perfect example. I remember
when the Seahawks beat the Broncos in New York and
Super Bowl forty eight, and I remember the game being over.
It's pretty much over at halftime, but when first he
Harvin ran back the kick to start the second half,
cameras over the Seahawks were gonna win. And I thought
(01:30:03):
to myself, I feel bad for the Denver Broco fans
that wanted to go to a super Bowl they hadn't
been in fifteen years, and that this was gonna be
their opportunity. It happened to be one of the highest
price places that you can find in New York City.
That game tickets were expensive, and you go and you
buy tickets and you watch your team get blown out
(01:30:24):
for eight like that, Like that, to me, is not
money well spent. If you spend thousands of dollars to
watch your team get slaughtered in a championship game where
the risk is always there that that could happen, I
don't think it's worth the price of admission. And last
night you thought Duke North Carolina Zion's only appearance at
(01:30:44):
Cameron indoor against the tar Heels. This is gonna be
at and he plays forty seconds. You spent twenty or
two thousand dollars on a ticket, likely a Duke fan
as well. Then you saw your team get boat raced
by their rivals. I don't know how in the world
you think that would be money worth spent for digit
ticket prices never worth it in sports? Are there elements though,
(01:31:05):
where they have to be worth it because you see
something you quite didn't expect. Um, you know, maybe the
super Bowl isn't all that it's lived up to be.
I was in Atlanta also, and I had no no
feeling let's stay and watch the super Bowl. My first
three years in the NBA, if all, it's so random.
With the Charlotte Bob Kass, I was always in the
(01:31:26):
city where the super Bowl was and just was like,
I'm not going to the game. I'm not going to
the game. I was at that. Uh was it in
Miami where it was just pouring grain. We were in
the same hotel with them. No no feeling to go
to the game, none at all. But there are those
random moments that you get to go like I remember
I got to go see the Lakers win Game seven
(01:31:47):
against Boston at home. Unfortunately as a as a professional athlete, though,
like everybody's so excited and stuff, and like I was
just like, I don't care, play, Yeah, you play. It
was the saying. And I think I've jaded as a
member of the media as well, because I get access
that maybe a normal fan wouldn't. But the whole point
(01:32:07):
of it is, and that is a game that the Lakers.
It paid off, but a lot of times it doesn't.
And that's just the point of why the risk factor.
Maybe a game seven in the situation a home game
seven is different, but last night a regular season game.
As soon as Zion, like if you were to tell
(01:32:28):
someone Zion Williamson is only gonna play forty seconds, here's
a two thousand dollar ticket, you want to buy it.
There's no way they would have thousand dollars to Tyson fight.
And you've been I know, you've definitely been a boxing man.
You've seen about everything there is to be and the
build up. You're there for twelve straight hours and he
(01:32:50):
gives you one minute of a fight and it's over
and and the only thing you have for it is
the story. Like I was like that's if you want
to pay thousands of dollars to say that you were
in the arena when people are gonna lie that weren't
there and say that they're anyway. It just it shows
you of you gotta be smart with this stuff. You
gotta you gotta understand, you gotta figure out ways. Like
(01:33:13):
I told you, I'm going golfing in North Carolina. We're
gonna try to get tickets to go to the see
the tar Heels. They get Syracuse on Tuesday, and so
I've looked on the secondary market. Hasn't been anything there.
Doug may try to hook up some connections, but I'm
not gonna go out of my way. Let me let
me I see this has social media ruined the story
because we both grew up in an era where like
(01:33:35):
our dads are grandpa's would tell stories about things and
they would seem legendary. But like now we can see
on social media or camera phones like it wasn't that cool.
I'll say, I'll say I think the experience at home
is something as well, but that's just watching general games.
I do think that, yeah, maybe you get so much
(01:33:58):
of it. There's there's there's a bit of the over
hype can happen, and I think that's what Duke North
Carolina happened last night. Think there's no possible way that
game was going to live up to the billing that
you had. There just wasn't even if Duke wins Zion
Williamson would have had to have dunked it from half
court at the buzzer for that to be worth it.
(01:34:20):
He's Ryan Hollands, I'm Dan Buyer. Hey, it's taxis and
I'll ask yourself, are you getting a big refund this year?
Tax Layer is set up to make your tax filing
process fast easy, and they guarantee your maximum refund. If
you love this program, you could show it by going
just tax layer dot com and start free today. He's
Ryan Hollands. I'm Dan Buyer. We are in for Doug Gottlieb.
(01:34:41):
I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox. You can get Ryan
on Twitter at the Ryan Hollands. When was the last
time you paid for a game? I couldn't do that
to me, Bro. It's been a while. It's been a while, right, Yeah, yeah, exactly.
That's just the other point that I'm making is that
it's been a wild just like like being media, having
(01:35:02):
a media credential you don't necessarily want to pay. Actually
have a problem. Like if I go to like AU
game or a high school game and like I go
to walk into like that'll be ten dollars, sir, Like
I get the biggest attitude. I get so upset. Stamp
your hand? Do you still have to do that? Do
they still stamp your hand? I don't want to be
(01:35:23):
I hate the people. I hate the guys that are like,
do you know, Like I don't feel like I'm anybody,
but I'm like, I don't want to pay. This is
cheap six ten seven ft guy in the gym. They
should know better. They should. Hey, at Farmers, we've seen
almost everything, so we know how to cover almost anything
when it's game time. Have an experienced player to help
you stay ahead of the game, but their experience into play.
At Farmers dot com, we are Farmers are the Pittsburgh
(01:35:47):
Steelers destined for failure. Failure, That's what I was trying
to say. That was a failure, a failure, the Pittsburgh
Steelers destined for failure because of their backing of Ben Roethlisberger.
Let's ask a forward GF next year on Fox for
(01:36:09):
a car landing on a roof to a car landing
in the pool. We've covered it. Talk to farmers. We
know a thing or two because we've seen a thing
or two. We are farmers under written my Farmers truck
fire insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable in every state.
(01:36:30):
He's tenure NBA veteran Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Buyer. This
is the Doug Gottliebs Show. You can find us on
Twitter at Dan Buyer on Fox and you could get
Ryan at the Ryan Hollins joining us. He's a former
NFL general manager in the National Football League. In his
new book, Gridiron Genius, A master Class in Winning Championships
and building Dynasties in the NFL, is on sale now.
(01:36:53):
Michael Lobarti joins us again here on Fox Sports Radio. Hey, Michael,
goot to talk to you again. How are you. I'm
doing great? Thank you for having me. Appreciate it us.
The Pittsburgh Steelers have provided storyline after storyline after storyline
so far this offseason. I want to start with their GM.
How out of bounds was Keith Colburton saying that Ben
Roethlisberger basic lely has cart blanche and criticizing and saying
(01:37:15):
whatever he wants with his players. Did Keith Colbert go
about that the wrong way when talking about his quarterback, Well,
you know, I think, Look, I think it's pretty clear
over the last five seasons, Pittsburgh's won a lot of games,
and Big Ben and certainly Levian Bell and U and
Antonio Brown are a huge part of that. And I
(01:37:35):
think that you know, the commentary about what Roethlisberger can
get away with, it's a peaked inside of Mike Conlin's organization.
I mean their second to the Patriots in the last
five years and wins. Patriots have won seventy four games
in the last five years, counting playoffs, and the Steelers
are second at fifty seven. So there is a gap,
and I think that gap lies some of the problem
that's going on. You don't have this much issue with
(01:37:57):
two players who essentially you're trying to make one you
made the highest paid player at his position for a while,
and the other one you're trying to pay that they
don't really seem to want to come to contractual terms.
And I want to correctly, I said Keith for some reason,
but Kevin Coilvert the general manager of the of the
Pittsburgh Steelers. Is it a culture issue? Is that does
that stem from the top? Does it stem from from
(01:38:19):
Mike Tomlin? Where? Where does does that issue come from? Well?
I think it does. It has to look at the culture.
I mean, look, they have been a successful organization. As
I wrote about in my book, Bill Walls said, they're
really only competing against eight teams. And when you break
down the one lost record over the last five years,
you can see who those eight teams clearly are. It
comes right out, It jumps out at you fairly quickly.
(01:38:41):
And because of that, you know the Steelers are one
of the eight. And what's happened to when their culture
has taken a bad turn? Things have gone haywire inside
the building. And when if you ask any Steeler fan,
you know their frustration of why there's such a gap,
there's a there's a seventeen game gap between them and
the Patriots. The answer comes into, we don't win the
close games. We make too many mistakes, we don't have
(01:39:02):
enough mental toughness. There's things that details that don't get
covered in Pittsburgh that seemed to get covered in New England,
and that holds them back, and I think that that's
clearly the case. So I think Mike has to bear
some responsibility. Certainly Kevin Colbert would have to bear some
responsibility just by his comments that he's allowing Ben Roethlisberger
to do whatever he wants to do. Michael, you talked
(01:39:23):
about culture, and there's a different type of athlete now.
So if I hear you correctly, are you saying, hey,
have your culture, stick to it, don't change for these
new athletes. Or do you think that there's a level
of give and take with a guy like a Antonio Brown,
like a Ben Roethlisberger, Levan Bell versus a Tom Brady
(01:39:44):
and crew. I think that players that want to win
and we will, We'll do whatever it takes to help
the team win. Or timeless. I don't think it has
anything to do with millennials or Generation X or any
of that. I think they're timeless, and I think that
when you have enough of those guys on your team.
But when you get into the city situation. Look, if
you were representing Antonio Brown, you would have shut him
down from social media about two months ago. But all
(01:40:06):
he's done has hurt himself. He hasn't helped himself whatsoever.
Nobody wants to trade for somebody else's problems, and when
the problems are dramatic and are out there in front
of everyone's eyes, people say, wait a minute, hold on,
that's not for me. I think I'm gonna pass. Antonio
Brown is due to make twenty six million dollars over
the next two seasons, and yet he wants an increase
of the contract that he just renegotiated in two thousand
(01:40:28):
and seventeen. You know, when you want to put that,
you want to put yourself interest in front of the team.
That's gonna sour a lot of people. And I think
that when you look at great teams, their locker rooms
are always solid. Aren't There moments though, where you have
to sacrifice talent for culture? You see New England just
did it with Josh Gordon, you know, and that they
they've had some time out, time out, time out, time out.
(01:40:50):
They took Josh Gordon in. Josh Gordon behaved within the culture,
so there's a there's a difference there. Josh Gordon didn't
go off the reservation and when he did, he was gone,
and so there's a difference between taking a player in
and adapting to They took aperd Hainsworth and he didn't
adapt to the culture. He was gone. Certainly, you know
this is a talent game. But remember the line that
Belichick and I'm write about it in the book that
(01:41:12):
he's famously quoted as saying, we're not collecting talent, We're
building a team. When his team's ever been not headed
in one direction when is self self players? Do self
interests come first, have ever benefit of the team. I
don't think you could ever show me a team that
wasn't a full team in terms of chemistry and and
and playing together. That's one. I don't think you can
(01:41:33):
show me one that had selfest players on it that
didn't win. Michael LOBARTI joining us here on Fox Sports Radio.
He's Ryan Hollins. I'm Dan Buyer sitting in for Doug
here on the Doug Gottlieb Show. How much did Levy
on bell Um get in the way of Levy on
bell because now there's a report that The New York
Day of the News says that he is about twenty
(01:41:53):
to thirty pounds overweight, or at least was during his absence.
How much did Levy on Bell's ego get the way
of Levan Bell having success in the National Football League.
I guess I don't understand where he's getting his advice.
You know, people say, well, he's gonna get another contract,
he can make up the fourteen and a half million.
He can't. And then people say, well he could have
gotten hurt. Well, you know that's why you have insurance
(01:42:15):
policies to protect yourself. I mean to me, when you
walk away from fourteen and a half million because you
don't want to play, that tells you all you need
to know. And I think he's gonna be shocked at
the market that's out there. People say, well, the Colts
will take him. The Cults aren't gonna sign him. There's
no way the Cults are gonna put that much money.
And nobody's paying attention. The Colts running backs were drafted
in the third and fourth round. They played really well
(01:42:36):
last year. The Colts didn't beat the Chiefs because they
lacked the running back. The Colts need to fix some
things on defense. So I think Levian Bell is gonna
have to prove he's in shape. He's gonna prove he's
a team player, and I'd like to know what team
really wants to overspend for a running back. Now, maybe
it's the New York Jets, And that would fit because
the Jets last year, when you look at what they
did in free agency, Tremaine Johnson a huge contract, Terrell Prior,
(01:42:58):
Spencer Long, Isaiah crowwell, all these guys they signed, some
of them aren't even on the team. Tremaine Johnson's over
there because he's got so much guaranteed money. So I
think when you look at the teams that have money
and they're spending, they're regretting it, and I think it'll
be buyer's remorse. I'm i'm, I'm. I'm completely enamored with
the Steelers saga right now. I want to get off
(01:43:20):
of it. But it's so intriguing. I mean, if you're
in the front office there, are you looking to clean house,
salvage what you have? Is this a Tomlin issue? Where
do they go? Where do they go? Ryan? I think
you have to understand the history of the Steelers that
the Rudey family doesn't overreact. They follow the Carpenter's rule,
(01:43:41):
which is measured twice cut once. And I think they've
decided that Bell has not been the bell that they needed. Now,
remember we never discussed Bell's suspensions. We never discussed the
games Bell's missed in terms of his career in Pittsburgh,
where they stood by him and gave him the franchise tag.
We don't talk about that because that's not popular to
talk about. We talk about Bell the player. But they've
(01:44:02):
overcome some games. I mean, the two best players on
their team Bell and and and Antonio Brown were on
the field when they lost to the Jacksonville Jaguars last year.
So let's be real and let's put this in perspective, okay.
And I think what the Rooney family will do, which
is what they always do, They're gonna evaluate. I think
Mike Tomlin is under the evaluation as well. He's got
(01:44:22):
to get his house in order. And I think they're
gonna make sure that he has enough players around them
that can help him get the house in order. But
he's gonna have to maintain it. You know, cultures are
wonderful words, and it sounds perfect, and people think that
once you install it, you know it stays forever. No,
you have to work at every single day. And clearly,
I think what the Steelers are a team that had
a culture one time. They've won fifty seven games in
(01:44:45):
five years. They've lost that culture because they haven't maintained it.
And that's why I think the heat will be on
Mike Tomlin through the Rooney's eyes. Michael Lombardi joining us
here on Fox Sports Radio. Find him on Twitter at
m Lombardi NFL. If you are a current GM in
the NFL, what would you want to know from Colin
Kaepernick if you were to bring him into your team
now that this case is over with. You know, for me,
(01:45:06):
it was never really about Colin Kaepernick protesting. For me,
it was always about Colin Kaepernick the player. Uh, That's
how I see football. I don't see it the other way.
I mean, if he wants to kneel and he wants
to do that, and he wants to use his NFL
career as a social platform, and he's entitled to do
that under the Constitution of the United States. However, as
a football player, we're talking about an inaccurate quarterback. We're
(01:45:28):
talking about a guy who had who has to run
a system that the system caught up with. I mean,
if you go back and watch him with Chip Kelly
in a shotgun formation, you know, he struggled to be
accurate with the football, He struggled with timing, He struggled
with a lot of things that you have to do
to play quarterback. Should he be in the NFL without
a doubt? Is he better than some of the bad
players that we've had to watch at quarterback? Yes, But
(01:45:48):
for me as a general manager, I don't think he
can be an adequate number two player because I think
you'd have to run a certain style of offense only
for him, and it's not cohesive to what I would
want to do offensively as a starter. I don't see
him as a starting quarterback in the NFL unless you
want to win about three or four games. And of course,
the merv Griffin episode is the best of the Seinfeld series.
(01:46:10):
There's no so good. I mean I just watched. I mean,
that guy put it on there and I ruined fifteen
minutes on my life today, that ruined. I went back
and watched it again, and I think I laughed as
hard as I did this time as I did the
first time I watched it. Oh gosh, what was that
A night in El Paso? I think I spent a
month one night. Now, fact, I'm killing it myself. Go
(01:46:31):
watch it yourself people. Sorry, Michael Lavardi for NFL GM
find the book a Gridyer genius, a master class and
winning championships and building dynasties in the NFL is on
sale now. Also a fan of scandals and animals that
was in the episode. For sure, for sure and Dot
then jacked this saying I'm a fan of San Diego
Zoo as well. Yeah for the Glumbus, I spent a
(01:46:54):
month there one night, That's what was the line. I
appreciate it. Michael will do it again soon. I have
a good one. Yes, Michael Party, good friend of the program.
And Doug Gottlieb glad to have him here. He's Ryan Hollins.
I'm Dan buyer. A change in the NBA that could
have effected Zion Williamson could be forthcoming. Let's check in
with ISAACO for the latest of what's happening in sports. Yes, indeed,
(01:47:17):
Dan and Ryan USA today reporting that the NBA has
submitted a formal proposal to the NBA Players Association that
will lower the draft eligible age from nineteen to eighteen.
Along those lines, Oklahoma City thunderstar Paul George said that
he reached out to Nike today to find out what
(01:47:37):
happened when his PG two point five signature shoe disintegrated
while being warned by Zion Williamson on the play where
Williamson was injured last night against North Carolina. George said, quote,
I talked to Nike to see what went wrong, what
happened with the shoe, and I take pride in that
it's never happened to my knowledge before. Unquote. Pelicans head
(01:47:58):
coach Alvin Gentry said today that Anthony Davis will play
Friday against the Pacers, but did not comment on Davis's
status for games beyond that. Mike gari Folo of NFL
Media reports that the New Orleans Saints are releasing veteran
safety Kurt Coleman one year into a three year deal,
a move that we'll save them four million dollars in
salary cap space. Sad news from Major League Baseball. Veteran
(01:48:22):
Boston Globe Baseball columnist Nick Cafardo passed away today at
the age of sixty two in Fort Myers, Florida, where
he was covering the Red Sox in spring training golf
in the first round of the w g C Mexico Championship.
Rory McElroy has a one shot lead over Dustin Johnson.
McElroy eight under through seventeen holes. Tiger Woods is even
(01:48:47):
through his first twelve holes of the first round. Back
to the Doug gott leave Show with Dan Buyer and
Ryan Hollins and for Doug Today in ten seconds. But first,
a word from farmer. From a dog accidentally flooding a
living room to a I'm taking a joy ride. We've
covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two. We are farmers.
(01:49:08):
Under written my Farmers truck Fire Insurance Exchange and Affiliates
products unavailable in every state. Dan and Ryan back to you,
Thank you very much. Isaac. It is the Doug Gottlieb Show.
He's Ryan Holland's I'm Dan Buyer. I can't believe I
messed up the Seinfeld line. I'll pass only spend a
month there, one night. That's what it was. That's what
you get when you try to recite great comedy. You're
a Seinfeld fan, I am, but I don't care about something.
(01:49:30):
I just want your apology right now. I want your apology.
You're sitting here blaming, You're sitting there blaming the NBA
in a The NBA is about that life. It's about
that lie. Al Right, Okay, Ryan Hollins, We're gonna get
to that in just a second. First, I want to
let you know that today's show is brought to you
(01:49:51):
by Lows. Lows knows you'll do it right to save
on updates to your bathroom. We do it right to
with up off select vanities during our refresh for less
kitchen and bath event. Do it right for last start
with Lows offered valid through February. Exclusions apply us only,
And I've got We'll get to the news that Isaac,
because this is this is more than a coincidence. I'm
(01:50:13):
just telling you, it's more than our coincidence. After we
get our final excerpt of Yes here it is, you
weren't gonna escape the John Ramos podcast that is sweeping
the nation. John. So far, this thing has been a
hit with everybody except Brad. Yeah. Remember I remember these
are just excerpts. Yeah, Yeah, there's more in the full podcast. Ryan.
(01:50:36):
If you had to give a thumbs up or thumbs
down to the X and THSE podcast right now, where
would you where would you go with it? Two thumbs up. Yeah,
two thumbs up. Is John Ramos talks about his ex
girlfriends in the Baltimore Orioles. If I had more thumbs
I put more up. Yeah. Let's see if we get
three thumbs up with this one. I knew me and
(01:50:56):
my wife were made for each other when we both
had cow Ripken June, You're on our free pass list.
He's got those beautiful blue eyes, he does. I can
see why you would be smitten with cal Ripken Jin.
Your and your wife would as well. The lovely Suzanne.
Of course. That's uh. It's good to have a couple
of extra cards, you know. Yes it is, Yes, it
(01:51:17):
is there. It is x is and Os by one
John Ramos combining his ex girlfriends and the Baltimore Orioles
in his podcast Isaac Low and Crown. If he is available?
How many thumbs up for the x is in os podcast?
What do you mean by if I am available? If
I'm available to talk right now? Or of course just
wanted to make sure. How about answering the question? How
(01:51:39):
about that my skin start to creep U two thumbs up. Yes,
that is already subscribed and we'll be tuning in on
my commute home. Alright, Isaac had the news. That's the
NBA working on the proposal to limit the age limit
or to the age limit from nineteen. You're cheering because
(01:52:01):
you're proving my point. Ryan, that's the that's the that's
the issue with this. This is this is the this
is the NBA. This is the NBA. And I know
it's coincidental that it was on the heels of the
Zion injury, But do you think this report really comes
out if Zion, if it comes out today on a Thursday,
if Zion isn't hurt last night, do you think this
(01:52:21):
report comes out today? Are you just questioning the timing? Listen,
the NBA is appropriate. Can you argue with just and appropriate?
That is it perfect? No? But can you fault effort?
This is not a mile way or the highway type
of approach. The NBA solve problem. They put um responsible
(01:52:44):
steps in place to fix it. And now Zion Williamson
last night show you how appropriate it is to absolutely
abolish the rule. And so I don't I don't know
how you're what are you complaining to it? Are you
still are you hold on? Are you still blaming the NBA? Dan?
I am because why because if the rule wasn't placed
(01:53:10):
yet in place yesterday, Zion Williamson isn't in a duke
uniform with his legs in the form of a Z
on the camera the north floor. So if you are
carrying your lunch in your hand Christmas, you can make
any analogy. We heard some stupid ones, or I'll tell
(01:53:31):
you that much. You got your lunch in hand, and
I trip and I knock over your lunch. I knock
your drink over. Okay, you got Starbucks, I knock your
drink always. What are you gonna hey, Ryan, It's okay,
it's an accident. Where about it? What if I walk in,
I slap it off. I slapped your drink off the table,
You're gonna have a problem. Hey, what's wrong with you?
You're gonna have some choice words for me. That's what
(01:53:52):
the n C double A does. That's the difference between
n C Double A and the NBA. If the NBA
makes a mistake, they are going to go about it
the right way, conflict management and trying to make it right.
So how do you don't know? How do you fought
that that you The answer is in what you just said.
They're trying to make it right because it's wrong right now,
and the reason that it's wrong has put Zion Williamson
(01:54:15):
in this situation that he's in because this now would
change the rule that would allow Zian Williamson to go
from high school to the NBA getting rid of the
one and done. If Jeff zill Get of the USA
today is correct and his reporting that's this, it makes
my whole point that, yeah, the NBA is finally getting
it right. But last night all anybody wanted to do
(01:54:37):
was claimed that the m C double A was at
fault for Zie Williamson, getting the whole reason. You have
no you you hold no value here. You cannot you
cannot look me in the face right now, and I
look talk talk to our listeners. Okay, let's say this
holds no value that the n b A is pro active.
(01:55:00):
They are not telling you this is a my way
or the highway type of approach. They are doing what's
best not just for the league but for the players
because the NBA's prospering, but it values Zion in these
young prospects and what's good and what's best for them.
Condoleez Or Rice. As I said earlier in that Rice
Commission to Look into College Basketball said it perfectly. The
(01:55:23):
one and done should be done. It should be out
of college basketball if you want to help clean up
the sport. The problem is the n c double A
has no say in it whatsoever. It's all on the
NBA and the NBA Players Association, which they have done. Unfortunately,
for Zion Williamson it's too late because he had to
play under the old rules of the NBA. In the NBA.
(01:55:44):
You know what it sounds. You know what, big message
the NBA saying right now, big message, We're sorry. Shut
it down. They should have shut it down earlier than
Zion Williamson wouldn't have a shoe blowing adam. So shut
it down. Shut it down, shut it down, shut it down. Well,
(01:56:06):
the the point is the NBA, for as great as
proactive as they are, they were late to the bus
on this one. And that's the case. If it's forty
degrees below zero and you're standing outside and wanting to
come inside, Ryan Hollins, and I'm saying, nope, you've got
to wait your one hour before coming inside. You're gonna
go outside and freeze to death. Exactly what it is.
(01:56:30):
That's the best analogy we have heard on Fox Sports Radio,
by the way of any analogy of of what actually
went on, is that accurate. Is just trying to make
you right. This is the NBA saying, hey, we're gonna
put a plan in place, rather than making an emotional
hold here here here in emotional response, is saying, look, man,
we are going to create a junior NBA. We're gonna
(01:56:55):
have positive resources here for you so that you guys
can be the best that you can be by the
time you make us the NBA, rather than just saying
we'll getting one and done. Because guess what, you had
g ms and executives in slimy high school gyms. They
had to deal with broken down AU coaches. It was
a complete mess. And then you had kids trying to
jump to the NBA skipping class. That wasn't going to
(01:57:18):
note dard NBA. But last night had nothing to do
with any of that. Last night had everything to do
with the NBA not allowing Zion Williamson to go pro.
And today it is not a coincidence that this story
was leaked. It is not There is no way, this
isn't even done yet, This isn't even so you're not
commending this. I'm just saying that there's a reason why
this came out the day after Zion Williamson sprained his
(01:57:41):
knee in a game against North Who. But you're you're skipping.
Can you commend the NBA? No, I am commending it,
but I'm saying for Zion Williamson's situation, for him, it
was too late and me confused, you know, the saying.
He's Ryan Holland's. This is the Doug Gottlieb Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Not everyone is happy with the
(01:58:03):
Denver Broncos getting a new quarterback. Find out who's unhappy
next here on Fox. From a hotterbleon landing on a
car to a load of concrete falling on one, we've
covered it. Talk to farmers. We know a thing or
two because we've seen a thing or two. We are
farmers under written my farmers truck fire insurance exchanges and
(01:58:24):
affiliates products unavailable in every state. He's Ryan Hollins, I'm
Dan Buyer. We are in for Doug today Ran of
course at Tenure, NBA VET that you can find on
Twitter at the Ryan Hollins, I'm at Dan Buyer on Fox.
Just an update to the report that the NBA could
(01:58:45):
be ushering in legislation if you will, in their cb
A that would do away with the one and done reports,
saying that it wouldn't become official if agreed upon by
the NBA and Players Association until the AFT, so we're
still a couple of years away from it, but that
could change. And I just think that there's no coincidence
(01:59:06):
that this news leak the day after Zion Williamson got hurt,
because the NBA is the one who should bear the
brunt of the responsibility. Ryan disagrees, simple as that. Yeah,
that simple, Yeah, that simple. Today's Yeah. Today's show is
brought to you by tax layer dot Com. It's taxis
and now ask yourself, are you getting a big refund
(01:59:27):
this year? Tax Layer is set up to make your
tax filing process fast, easy, and they guarantee your maximum refund.
If you love this program, you can show it by
going to tax layer dot com and start free today.
That summed it up, didn't it, though? I think? So
let's get to the presss the press. Ryan, Here's where
Isaac blowing crin gives us a bunch of stories and
(01:59:48):
we can react to them. Yeah about that. Hello Isaac,
Hello Dan and Ryan. We begin in the NFL. Here
is Denver Broncos quarterback case Keenum reacting to the Broncos
acquisition of the Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on the Sports
Spectrum podcast this week. Obviously a podcast not as well
(02:00:11):
known as the John Ramos XS and o's podcast, but
here is what Keenem had to say reacting to the
Flacco deal. Wait, call me that morning, and uh, you know,
we had a great conversation. You know, I was definitely
I was definitely shocked. It was. It was a surprise
for us, you know, and I think probably for the
first you know, day or so, that's kind of what
it was. But you know, for us, we're definitely disappointed.
(02:00:31):
It's not something we wanted to happen. I know that. Uh,
you know, everybody's doing their job and John feels like
that was a chance for him to help the Broncos out.
So for us, um, it's, uh, it's another chapter in
our lives and and and we're gonna, you know, we're
gonna roll with it. I will say this, guys, there
is no conversation when you find out you lost your job.
That is great. Right, So I think case keenum one
(02:00:52):
of the nicest guys in the NFL. It's maybe exaggerating.
You ever had a nice conversation Ryan when like we're
gonna we're gonna lower your minutes. Is that ever a
great conversation? No? But you have respect there. It's a
it's a respect thing in cases of pros pro. So
that that's what he's being as a professional. There. You
gotta you gotta love that. Here is the latest on
(02:01:15):
the potential of Earl Thomas joining the Dallas Cowboys. Report
from Calvin Watkins, who covers the Cowboys for The Athletic.
A source close to Thomas said there's a strong market
for him from several teams, but his age and injury
history are causes for concerned. Thomas's injury should require three
to four months of recovery. Given that time frame, he
(02:01:36):
should be good for week one. Thomas wants to play
for the Cowboys. The team's interested, but not to the
degree most assume unquote interesting. You know, the Seahawks had
said they wanted a second rounders, second rounder, second rounder,
and then when the Cowboys are like, all right, we'll
give you a second round, They're like you know what,
we want a first rounder. Let's get a picked back
(02:01:56):
depending on where he signs. But Earl Thomas is gonna
help with the It's just probably only gonna be for
a year or two. One of his honestly, one of
the saddest stories just in sports. Just I don't want
to say sad, because there's there's stuff to be said
about his sports, but I mean just i'd say frustrating,
but I'm frustrating, like you're blowing it up. It doesn't
work out. Earl is upset, you know, he's he's a
(02:02:18):
world champ, and then he gets hurt, and it was
just it was ugly. It was ugly that it is
one of the worst worst stories I've seen. Meanwhile, Jacksonville
Jaguars executive vice president Tom Coughlin was asked by Action
News Jacksonville about the future of Jaguars quarterback Blake Bortles,
(02:02:39):
and Coughlin responded, and I quote, Blake is the quarterback
with the Jacksonville Jaguars right now, this reminiscent of one
of the x is from John Ramos's Exes and Os
podcast said John is my boyfriend right now. That's very
I can see the parallels. Yeah, they be like, what
(02:03:00):
about say I don't know? On St. Patrick's Day March sevente.
Then you get the real answer from Tom Coughlin. Yes,
the Blake Bortles can't catch a break Blake Bortles. Uh gosh,
I mean that's don't worry. That says it all. That
says it all. NBA is back tonight. What we've only
(02:03:23):
got like twenty seconds. But what do you think we're
gonna see from the Lakers against the Rockets? Are gonna
They're gonna compete. I can't guarantee they win because there's
stuff to fix out and I'm not gonna guarantee anything
with young, inconsistent players. But you're gonna see what Lebron
is about. I don't. I don't think you're gonna see
full full Lebron tonight. But he's got his work to do.
He's Ryan Hollins, I'm Dan Bayer. This is the Gottlieb
(02:03:44):
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Remember if you ever miss it,
and just go to Fox Sports Radio dot com and
about it. Talk to you guys. Letter
