(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio Boom, What Up America?
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, brought to you by Farmers.
At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so we know how
to cover almost anything when it's game time. Having experienced

(00:44):
player to help you stay ahead of the game put
their experience into play at Farmers dot com. What up? Um?
I guess at some point I'll talk about this uh
story with Robert Kraft. I just I don't know what?

(01:04):
What do you? What do you want me? Were? Like?
What what do you what would you want me to say?
Do you have any make fun of fun of him? Like? Okay,
I can like we can do kind of slapstick jokes
whatever you know? Um, apparently you know his last visit
to this day SPA was the day of the a
f C Championship Game. Who what Patriots. What person Patriots

(01:26):
nation wasn't stressed over that game. We all have different
ways of relieving our stress. I don't know, but we
we We try to pretend like, you know, billionaire business
mogul is the same as you and me. When you
know Robert Kraft's wife passed away his girlfriend at a
kid less than two years ago and it wasn't his kid,

(01:48):
so you know, like again, his life in our lives
are not. We may look we you may think we're
in the same on the same planet, the same planet.
We live in different worlds. We just do. And I
guess I can make a huge like the human trafficking
is a much bigger deal to me than the alleged prostitution,

(02:10):
even if it's way easier to make fun of the
alleged prostitution or the fact that a video exists, that's
one of those just take your word for it that
it exists. Do you want it? No? No, no, no,
no, no no no no no no no. I'm okay, I'm
gonna take up gonna take a quick pass on that, one,
very easy pass. I do want to talk about the

(02:32):
Lakers instead, because the Lakers and Lebron James and their
their struggles to remain consistent are I guess, on some
level fascinating and on some level very explainable. The Lakers
beat the Rockets with James Harden at home, came from

(02:54):
seventeen down, won the game, great win, and then turn
around and lose to the Pelicans, who choose to not
play Anthony Davis and the Pelicans, the team who most
people think get packed it in to try and lose
to get a better draft pick to help them reload.
This was Lebron James after the loss to the Pelicans.
The last few years. You know, everybody saw accustomed to

(03:17):
the losses that I'm just not accustomed to. I'm not
accustomed to. I would never get comfortable with losing. So,
you know, losing Game one to Houston, it feels the
same way as losing Game fifty nine and New all
from me, That's just how I'm builing. That's who I am. Okay,
I'm not really sure what to make of that. Is

(03:38):
it is he I'm ticked? Is that what he's saying?
I'm mad that we lost, and everybody else doesn't understand, Like,
here's what it seems like to me, the Lakers and
whether it's Lebron or Lebron's people, or the Lakers brass
or all of them combined. I feel like all of
us after we've gone and picked out something at Ikea.

(04:02):
Do you ever go to Ikea like he's great, man,
You can get like a burger and fries for dollar fifty,
a throwback to when we were kids. You go in there,
You're like, man, everything looks awesome. I'll take a sofa,
a nightstand, a mattress, you know what. I'll take the
whole bedroom set. Oh, I've been looking for one of those.

(04:24):
Give me one of those cub chairs. I'm all in. Oh,
and I want one of those dressers that that's the
dresser exactly that I want. You're like, man, this is
way less money than if I go in shop at
a legit furniture store where there's such ridiculous markup. It's
not funny, all right, Like you walk into like you

(04:45):
go to pottery bar and you flip it over, like
damn it cost how much? There's no mark up in
the world like furniture store markup and furniture store guys
sitting there going right now. My wife and I used
to joke because one of the big name. Furniture stores
when we used to live in Connecticut had a sign
up that literally never came down that said sale going on. Right,

(05:09):
It's almost like coals, Like there's a reason that coals
can send you flyers where if you buy three items
you get like sevent off because there's such a ridiculous markup. Right,
same thing with furniture stores. But there is something to
the value in it already coming assembled, it being ready made,
because everybody thinks you look at you like how hard

(05:30):
could it be? Right? How how hard you get you
get instructions. I have a college degree. My wife has
two college degrees. I believe that while the divorce rate
continues to be high, there is no greater infidelities. Probably
number one, but number two in our country in terms
of reason for high divorce rate is ikea. I kea.

(05:56):
Because you start putting together, you see all the parts
of like, oh okay, you take a breath, and you
guys both get coffee, Like this is what we're gonna
do on a Friday night or on a Sunday afternoon.
We can put the ball game on. I'm gonna put
together this dresser. Then you start putting together and wait
wait wait, they don't have these pieces. They're not here. Honey,

(06:19):
what did you do with this? With the do hicky
thing of a jig? Where are the do hicky? The
number twelve? Where's the number twelve? And you look around
and then you start start emailing IKEA. You call the
IKEA you didn't put the number, and then she's like,
here it is, here's the number twelve. You're like, okay, okay,
now where's it go. I have no idea. And then

(06:40):
at the end you think you got it all together,
and then you still have parts. You're like, wait, wait
a second, hold on, um, we kind of forgot ah.
It looks fine, fine, yeah, well where did this entire
bag of screws come from? Do you need him? It's
obvious listening Swedish, they kind of overdo it, the whole

(07:02):
safety thing. It'll be fine you put it together. It's
like leaning, like the tower of pizza. It doesn't look right.
You want to You hate her, she hates you. You've
cut yourself on several things. You have leftover parts, and
your left thinking sitting there going this is way more
than I signed up for. I should have just either
hired somebody to put together or bought something already put together,

(07:25):
which is where Lebron and the Lakers are. You know,
you put Lebron on the team and even magical little
sprinkled dust and you're in the playoffs. How hard could
it be? Right? He made the made the Eastern Conference
finals eight consecutive times. That should be pointed out that
the brilliance of what happened in Miami was not just

(07:46):
that he joined Dwyane Wade, who had already won a championship,
but he essentially demolished Cleveland. That was a team, and
they took out the legs from under Toronto, taking their
best player. Right. So, in addition to building up the heat,
they crushed two other playoff teams in the East. And

(08:06):
then when they get to Cleveland, it was ready made
in that they had tank games. To get the number one,
uh number one pick, they traded that for Kevin Love.
So you get a perennial All Star, you get a
burgeoning superstar in Kyrie Irving, and you get Lebron James
and who's you got your super team. That's how what
you have in l A A right. L A has

(08:29):
had these top picks and you know the ones that
have hit have now hit after they've sent them elsewhere
because they were drafted by Mitch cup Check. And you've
got an oft injured Lonzo Ball that's behind the learning
curve in terms of getting there, and you have Lebron
James who's older than he was previously, and you have

(08:51):
some parts in which wasn't Like the NBA is like, hey, Lebron,
oh you're in l A, now, why don't you just
pick the two or three best shooters that you want
for your roster? Like that's not how it works. So
they tried something different and they're left for a bunch
of screws like, well, that'd be fine. We'll make the
playoffs and then next year we'll figure it out. And

(09:12):
as frustrated as you are when you put together your
Ikea furniture, even if eventually you get it right, that's
where Lebron is with the Lakers. I still think eventually
they'll have a very nice nightstand. Eventually the dresser will
be fine. Will it be perfect like it is in
the store. Probably not eventually to work out, but you

(09:33):
end up going like, man, we had to fire Luke,
we had to get rid of have our players, we
had to kind of give into his idea of culture.
It's just not that much fun. You thought, walking through Ikea,
your living room would look like that living room. It doesn't.

(09:55):
It doesn't. And the sweat equity that you put in
leaves you with a bitterness towards your wife, and she's
bitter towards you. Same thing with Lebron. Even if ultimately
they succeed. With most of these young players, they're still
in the back of their mind deep sea, they're gonna
be bitterness over. Dude, you're gonna trade me. You valued

(10:16):
me so much that you were ready to jettison me
three or four months into the process. Where you've been
out because of injury, Like, it's not Lebron James's fault
that he got hurt, But it is Lebron james fault
that he got hurt, right, Like, who else is fault?
Is it? Well? His body broke down, Okay? Should he

(10:38):
have stretched more? Should have done yoga more, less muggling,
less muggling, more stretching, more yoga more plates Well he
was out for eighteen games, Yeah, which you should have
planned for if you're the Lakers, because you knew he

(10:58):
always misses some games with except of last year, only
year in which he's played eight two games, and by
the way, that probably wasn't a good idea, right, That's
one of those seems like a good idea at the time.
Sure le Bron and played two games, and then Cleveland
sitting there going like, yeah, you know, there's a little
payback for playing in two games. It comes to next year.
I think the whole thing is fascinating. But putting together

(11:20):
I Keia furniture is a lot like putting together a
team for Lebron James. Ultimately, I guess it's worth it,
but there's a lot of bitter relationships left in its wake.
Coming up next Um on the Doug Otlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio, Chris Haines is going to join us.

(11:43):
We'll ask him what he hears is the state of
the Lakers. Will also ask him, Um, what the value
the true value of Zion Williamson is two people in
the league. Obviously, he's putting people in the seats, and
there is this thought that teams are tanking to get Zion.
But is he viewed as a better option than Anthony Davis? If,

(12:07):
for example, the Knicks get the number one overall pick
we'll have the discussion from Chris Hayes, who has great
relationships across the lake. That's up coming next. But first, guys,

(14:19):
about anything in the United States. And it's not a
good intentions, nott a good intentions. Let's welcome to Chris
Haynes from Yahoo Sports, who joins us and Chris, I
want to believe that the Lakers are a playoff team
after they beat the Rockets, and heck, the come from
behind win against the Boston Celtics, but losing to the

(14:42):
Pelicans when they appear to be tanking, losing to the
Hawks before the All Star break, why the lack of
consistency appear? But wait what appear? Yes, appear to be
taken yet I like of what? I like that phrase
of the world? No, I think, Um, look, it's it's

(15:04):
a young team. They've been inconsistent, uh for most of
the year. Uh. You know, they still don't have lots
of ball in there. Rondo hasn't kind of regained the
play that the high level of play that you know
he sustained early in the part of the season. So
you know, there's a lot of variables going into it
into this and and still the like, we just can't

(15:27):
ignore what happened near the trade that line and how
everything just played out. I think it has a lot
more to do with those elements than anything else that's
taking place on the court. And so it's gonna be tough.
It's gonna be tough. I it's still hard to me
to imagine Lebron James team not in the playoffs. But look, man,
I just think there's so much other things to figure

(15:49):
out that's going on with that team outside of what's
going on the basketball court, and I think I got
to get that resolved before we start seeing any type
of consistent level of play that even possible. Think they yeah,
I think it's possible. I think it's the only reason
I think it's possible because they have Lebron James. Uh.
I know that's probably a crutch um, but you know,
we we just we we haven't seen that. You know,

(16:10):
this is just we're not a customer seeing you know,
one of his teams on the outside of the top eight.
For that, you know, I have to give him the
benefit of the doubt and think that even if his
teammates don't come ready to play that he's going to
be able to pick it up and elevate. Um, some
guys to get him in that topic. Uh, I just

(16:30):
have a hard time right now, just believe in just
based off in history, that he won't be there when
postseason arrives. So I would I would say yes as
right now. But I'll tell you this, if if there
is a year that it won't happen, you know, considering
everything that's happened this year, you know there's a good
chance this could be it. What should we make Draymond

(16:50):
Green switching to clutch sports? You know what? You know
he he's been Um. You know I was always told
that Draymond was thinking about either represent himself or going
going in a different direction. Um, if you did make
make a change, um, but going with Rich. Look, I

(17:12):
mean if you look at all the shows that he's
been involved with as the pertains to look, you know
Lebron James, He's been on the Shop shows with Lebron,
He's he's been on the Uninterrupted UM network where he
had a podcast a few years ago. Uh it was
you know, partaining with Lebron. Uh. You know, look go

(17:33):
to his social media feed over the last couple of
months and you'll see that he's been warning to clutch
uh sweater on some of this some of his photo shots,
and you know, so it's it's a it's a lot.
I mean, he's really tight with with Maverick Carter Lebron
James business partner that they're very close. And so I
think for people who saw it, uh in that regard,

(17:55):
you know, they probably say, well, okay, this is it
was only inevitable. But look, you know he's up for
a contract here that definitely Draymond wouldn't be making this
decision if if his contract was going to be up,
it's gonna be up, not this summer, but next summer.
He's up for an extension um this summer, and so
you know there's there's no doubt he's making this move,
but their attentions of trying to maximize his salary. So

(18:19):
you know, I think if you look at from as standpoint,
you should kind of connect the doctor and see why
he's doing this now and why why he's doing it
with Rich Paul. I'm so you we mentioned the Pelicans
at the start, and I guess I don't understand their
philosophy and not playing him or playing him, you know,
and like, look, you're still paying him, he's still on
your team. You can't trade him. Why wouldn't you just

(18:42):
play him? Like what, I don't I'm not sure I
get that. Well. I'm usually on the side of players
as it pertains to just what issues that they're dealing
with when it comes to NBA teams and bellion their owners.
But man, I I get it. I understand, Like I
understand from the Orleans expect that we all know, like
when trades make it public, it hurts. It hurts the

(19:06):
leverage of the team that that has that star. And
so this is out, this is all out and open.
It's gotten ugly and there's really no benefit for them
to be playing Antony Davis. Anthony Davis has an extreme
injury history in this league, and so it just doesn't
vote well to keep him out there playing thirty plus
minutes the game. You know, he can really get seriously

(19:26):
and hurt. They're uh hurt, you know, hurt their trade
package even more. So I get it, and I understand it,
and I really don't have a problem with you know,
if they were able to to set him down for
the seeable future or you know, the rest of the
rest of the season. I just think they have to
do what's best for that. You know, this organization is
small market, so uh, you know, they got to protect

(19:49):
their asset. And I you know, I don't have any
beef whatsoever with them trying to sit them down. That's
what Chris hansrom y'all who sports you joint us in
the doug Ot Lip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
let's let's get to the Boston Celtics. Another team struggling
with consistency. Although like, look, I thought that the the
Bucks game, if that's a preview of the Eastern Conference finals,

(20:10):
that shows how evenly matched they are. But there's there's
always been this field that something's still a little bit off.
What's the likelihood in your mind that they figure that out?
It's a good question. Uh, you know, I don't look,
this is a talented team. Um, they're one of the
best when you look from top to bottom in the league. Uh,

(20:32):
you know they're going to they're going to string away
uh a ton of wins. So where they're going to
be their interfiction things? You know, when you're talking about
the top teams in the East, you gotta at least
mentioned Boston. But at the same time, you know, they
go through spells and lolls of where they just can't
play together. And if you look at you know, just

(20:53):
the addition to Kyrie Irvan and Gordon Hayward trying to
incorporate those guys into a team that was a void
of stars last year and that didn't that didn't hurt them.
You know, they learned how to play well. Uh, just
you know, with team ball, it was like a college
basketball type of experience, and now you've got to incorporate
not only stars, but you're incorporating Eagles. Kyrie Irving's a

(21:16):
superstarters league, Gordon hay was all starters league. So now
Brad Stevens goes from not just being able to go
out there and and call the right place, but now
he has to manage personalities and I think this is
the first time he's really had to deal with that,
uh to this extent, and so I think that's what's
trouble even more. But at the end of the day,

(21:37):
the you know, I think they're they're going to be
there when it's all set done. I think they're gonna
string away wins. I think they're gonna go deep in
the playoffs. You know, they got one of the best
closes in Kyrie. That's going to help them. But you
have to think over a long seven game series, well,
some of those inconsistencies or some of those issues creep

(21:57):
up and the wrong at the wrong time and kill
their chances of advances. That possibly could be the case,
But I just think they're too talented to dismiss issue.
They got them, but you know they you know, when
you got challenged, you know, you just hope that it
comes to at the right time. That's the voice of
Chris Haines joined us in the Doug Gotlic Show on
Fox Sports Radio. I wonder what what reaction has been, like,

(22:21):
you have a great relationship with Damian Lillard. You had
an incredible podcast where you're talking. I think that's going
back to the All Star All Star Break. I'm going
back to last week it dropped where he just said like, look,
I'm not I'm not joining one of these these super teams,
and I'm like, this is my team, this is my
you know how much of that is Look, he's just
making the best out of what is his lot in life,

(22:43):
and how much of that is the reality of his
his desire to be that guy that sticks the flag
in the ground and if it comes to him, it
comes to him. He's definitely your ladder dug. He definitely
wants to be the guy who was just ripping Portland's
rip city to the fullest. He's a loyal guy. You know,

(23:03):
his family has He had a big family, man, and
they had to fend for themselves and kind of stick
together as a family to make ends meet. And you know,
he talked about them sharing clothes and things of that nature.
And so he's very loyal. When he went to Weeper State,
you know, he wasn't highly recruited out of out of
high school. And you know, once he started doing his
thing in college, a big time colleges try to give

(23:24):
the transfer and he wouldn't. So that's that's in him, man,
And you know that's that's legit what what he's talking about.
As far as he feels like if he did request
the trade, um, you know it will it will hurt
other people on that team where they would be traded
as well, and some people who are probably worked well
with him probably wouldn't work well with other teammates and

(23:45):
then it then they'll end up being wave, he does
think about that, and and because I told him what
brought that up, Doug that I told him, like, you're
in the same position as Anthony Davis. You know, you
get to a certain level where you just keep um
hitting your head on the ceiling, and that that ceiling
is not getting you to the promised land. And he
has every right to request the trade. And then he

(24:05):
threw out he threw that explanation out to me, which
I've really never heard from a star player before thinking
about how it would affect other people in the organization
and other players. But at the end of the day, man,
you know that's what I get to the point where, Man,
these players, you know, you still got to think about yourself.
You still have to understand and do what's right for

(24:25):
you and your career, your family. And because you know,
there's always a triple down effect when a when a
players traded, uh that that player can't has no control over,
so you might as well have your control over your
own career. And because you know things that things that's
out of your control, you just can't stop at all.
So but that's the way he feels. But duh, As

(24:47):
we know, players say one thing and then months later
or they don't get a contract or uh, they don't
like the right transaction teammate there, they'll go off and
say something else. We saw that with Kyrie Irvan kind
of before the season vouch. I mean a vow that
you know he will refined with Boston and now he's
kind of iffy, so things change. I wouldn't put too

(25:07):
much docutent, but that's definitely how Damian Lille feels as
it right now. Um, let me ask you quickly about
Zion Williams. And obviously he was scared last week with
him twisting his knee when his his shoe blew up. Um, Like,
we've kind of had the discussion over whether he should
or should and I think it's kind of a silly
discussion as to whether he shouldn't. I'm I'm guessing he's
not gonna play Wednesday against Virginia Tech, but I guess

(25:30):
he probably plays Saturday. My question is, how do you
think the league views him? Like, because I've talked to scouts,
like coming into the season, they didn't think he was
going to be a breakthrough star and then now they're like, wow,
but but he's he's different. He's not Lebron. He's not
r J. Barrett even he's a guy who can play

(25:50):
off the basketball. I'm just wondering, like, let's say the
Nicks get the number one overall pick and somehow they
get Durant and get Kyrie. Would they rather have his
zie in or would they rather have an Anthony Davis
considering his youth and the fact that he's gonna Philip Arenas.
I think they will. I think they were rare to
have Anthony Davis. Um just a simple fact that Kyrie

(26:11):
and Kevin Durant, they're they're coming in and try to
win championships now, and so you know, it's kind of
similar to when Lebron went back to Cleveland again they
had Andrew Wiggins, you know who. Not think Lebron Andrew
would have worked well together, but they needed they needed
to accelerate the curve. They need to celebrate the process.
That's why I went out and traded for Kella Love.

(26:32):
But Doug, I didn't get your take. What do you
do you think Zion should should play? If you can? Okay,
I mean arguing like this, like this whole idea that
he could he could suffer some major injury, like really,
like it's it's it's when it's not football, it's basketball,
and the idea of putting him in even like God forbid,
something did happen, Like Griffin didn't play his first year,

(26:52):
Joel Embie didn't play his first year, Ben Simmons didn't
plays first year. They're all fine. And the likelihood that
he gets hurt like that was just a freak thing
where his shoe blew up could happen in the workout,
you know. Um And and honestly, honestly, he needs to
play more. He just does because a kid who's two
eight five, if he's not in game shape, that's not

(27:13):
a good thing for when he's working out. For like,
all of these things only help his visibility, his viability,
you know, like if he gets to a final four,
wins national championship, all of that money he was gonna
make shoe company endorsements, he becomes much more of a
household name instead of a YouTube sensation. In addition to
which like, look, you go to Duke because you want
to compete and win the whole thing. That's that's the
only reason you go to Duke, right, Otherwise you should

(27:35):
have gone to Clemson. And I get what you're saying, dug,
and I don't necessarily disagree. But what I would say
this before college season opened up, most mo d No,
I'm not gonna say most. I didn't see any of
the moth drafts have Zion paying that number one. You
know he played, he played his way into that spot.

(27:55):
Correct now most moth drafts have him at number one.
And the only I was it is because you know, guys,
like this point of season NBA and college, everybody is hurt.
You know everybody is hurt right now. You know they've
battle of some extent of an injury. It's not an
injury that's gonna keep about to play. I would say
this unless the only reason, the only way I will

(28:16):
feel comfortable as I ain't coming back and playing, is
if he's a hundred percent healthy, I mean absolutely no pain.
If there's still any pain simmering from that injury, I'm
sitting out. I'm sitting out. I don't think anybody, I
don't think anybody disputes that. What what what the narrative
have been is he'd be a healthy scratch like, look,
he's number one pick, don't don't play right, But that

(28:39):
doesn't that's the dumbest, like you're a basketball player, you
gonna play basketball. You want to Like there's a if
there's a game, there's a championship, be one. You compete
for it, like you have one chance in your lifetime
to win a national champiship. Then you go on and
for the next fifteen twenty years you play in the NBA.
Like I, it was more of the idea of him
being a healthy scratch than if if he still hurts,
he shouldn't play. But I think it's a minor sprain

(28:59):
of his knee. He'll be fine. I'm talking about the
idea of a healthy scratch. I get it. But still
the you know, it can be considered what he's going
through right now, what he's going through now can be
considered a healthy scratch because I think, you know, I
don't have to look, I'm not throwing anything. I don't
have any concrete evidence, but I'm pretty sure he can
play right now, you know, and this can be considered

(29:19):
a healthy scratch. I'm talking about no pain, like he's
feeling absolutely no pain from that injury. And that's when
I would say, you know, come back, because he's locked
up as of right now, he's a number one pick
and he has a lot to lose. But if he's
a hundred, say, healthy, not feeling any pain, no knagging injuries,
then come back. Because, like you said, college is a

(29:40):
great experience. Duke has a phenomenal opportunity to achieve something special.
Who would want to enjoy that process? So that's that's
the only way that I would feel comfortable in him
coming back. In the fold of place, we're making it about.
My thing is we're making it about some dollars here,
some dollars there, which he's going to earn anyway, instead
of about what it should be about when you're eighteen

(30:01):
years old, which is men, just gonnata, have fun, play
with your guys, compete as hard as you can, and
the rest to take care of itself, which is you know,
which I think is what he had done. The problem
is is when the adults get involved and everyone starts
to tell him, tell him what he should and shouldn't do, like, hey,
do you want to play? Then go play, you know,
And I kind of think that's what the heart of
it is. A download uh Chris's podcast, It's outstanding. I

(30:24):

Competition Committee, of which one of the members, by the

(36:45):

and will reportedly discuss changes to replay review on judgment calls.
Is this a big deal, a little deal or no deal.
It's a little deal if they they if they decide
to make a change, it's a big deal. But offering
it up in conversation, I think it's a little deal.

(37:07):
It's smart talk about it, But you have to talk about.
There's there's all these other effects. You know, It's like
it's the it's the it's the unintended effects really, um
that you have to discuss, like do you want to
get it right? Sure? But what if we go back
and we see another penalty within the play? Can we
go back and change that? You know, Um, there's a

(37:27):
lot lot to this deal, more so than I think.
We're giving credit time of games seven hours and twenty
minutes exactly onto the NBA where Draymond Green, the star

by Rich Paul and Clutch Sports. Is this a big deal,
little deal or no deal? I guess we find out
what kind of deal Draymond Green gets next year and

(37:50):
then I'll tell you. So I'm gonna I'm gonna go
a little deal right now. Meanwhile, last night, as most
of America was informed by Samuel L. Jack during the Oscars,
the New York Knicks broke their eighteen game home losing
streak with a victory over Greg Popovich's San Antonio Spurs.
About that being said, the Knicks breaking their eight team

(38:12):
game home losing streak, is that a big deal? A
little deal or no deal, no deal, nobody cares they're
trying to lose games. I mean, I think it's interesting
to be the Spurs. We all have put the Spurs
into the playoffs already, and it's like it's funny, Like
we freak out because the Lakers lost to the Hawks
and lost to the Pelicans. We don't freak out the
Spurs lost the Knicks. Just weird the way it works.

(38:34):
Popovitch a little feisty today onto college basketball. Zion Williamson
will miss his second consecutive game tomorrow when his Duke
Blue Devil's take on Virginia Tech. Is that a big deal,
a little deal or no deal? Gonna go a little deal? Um?
If he misses like one or two more, Now we
start to get to the Okay, he's fine, he should
be playing, but not having been out a week yet

(38:56):
since tearing some terringston spraining his knee. Um, I think
is a little deal. And finally, and a whole new
meaning of the phrase approached the bench. Yahoo Sports supported
today that Arizona head coach Sean Miller and l s
U head coach Will Wade will be subpoened for the
April twenty second federal basketball corruption trial. Big deal, little

(39:21):
deal or no deal. That's a big deal. That that's
a big deal. That's a massive deal. Subpoenaed under oath,
that's a big deal. This is game time on the
Duck Gotlin Show. Honest question. I'm a member of the Academy.
I haven't seen except for Bohemian Rap City. I didn't

(39:42):
see Green Book. I haven't seen Roma. I haven't seen
the Favorite. I haven't seen it Field Street could Talk.
I saw Black Klansman I thought was good. I think
it was the greatest ever. Um. I didn't see First Man.
I didn't see Skin. I didn't see I saw Black Panther.
Saw that was good, Like I think it was the
best movie I've ever seen in my life, like people

(40:04):
did when they first reacted to it. Had any guys
seen any of these movies? What about you? Ramos from me?
Sure there are seen a file? Had you seen these movies?
I saw Roma, I thought it was kind of boring. Actually, Um,
I saw Black Panther at you. I thought it was great,
not great, good like you. Um. I saw heem Me Rhapsody,
which I thought Ramy Mallick should have deserved, definitely deserved
the Oscar. The movie was kind of disjointed, so it

(40:25):
wasn't really the best picture for me. So but the rest,
I'm with you. I didn't get to see most of
the other ones. Yeah, I thought Remy Milk was very
very good, very good, But I didn't I don't have context.
I didn't see everybody else's performance. What about you? Uh
did you see Andy? I? The only one I saw
was Black Panther. I don't think I've seen any of
the other movies. Yeah, and so if you haven't seen
them all, like you have no Like, well, I thought

(40:46):
Black Panthers awesome, Like okay, I dead Spins, Deadpool's year
they came out. I thought that should have got the
best picture of why it was an enjoyable watch that
that was. That was what would eliminate Roma for me,
Like I didn't have fun watching it, Like I don't
care how artsy it was or how it was interesting.
Like that's what I've heard about Roma. I've seen a
lot of people sort of say, like in our business,

(41:08):
when people write really long columns, we always say like, hey,
they're writing that for other writers, because no one's really
going to read like a five thousand word piece what
I've heard about Roma from a lot of people is
they always describe it as, you know, it's slow but
at the end, or like, hey, you know, it's just
it's like, okay, that just sounds like a boring movie.
Then you know it may be this cinematic great thing,

(41:28):
but I have no interest in watching it because no
one's ever been like oh man in the beginning, and
I was really entertained romas. Have you seen the new
m Night movie? Yeah, glasses, I did not see it. No,
you've seen it? Anybody? Have you seen it? I like
his movies, and I don't mind that they all have
surprise ending, right. It does kind of take away a
little bit now from the movie because I'm waiting for

(41:49):
the surprise ending, right. But again, it's kind of like
watching Iowa basketball. You know there's something fun going to
happen at the end, Like if you watch Iowa again
over the weekend when in the last second jot, it's
the week of the NFL combined, the trade market for
Antonio Brown is heating up. I'll give you one team
that makes sense, the other that doesn't. Next. Fox Sports

a lot to get to today. Chris Beard, Texas texts

in position. They went out, they win the Big Twelve.
Kansas got a big Kansas State team. They lost you
at home tonight to keep pace, but UH got a
chance to dethrone KU after demolishing them over the weekend.
Demolished them. Worst loss for kids in the Big Twelve

(42:57):
since February seven of two thousand. That's a long time,
ramos you wear. February seven, two thou who Kansas played
and then lost by thirty three points The worst loss
Roy Williams at that point had ever taken in his
coaching career. That would be Oklahoma State University by one,

(43:18):
Thank you very much, walked right into one like just
do a little mallottle mental gymnastics. Yeah, yeah, yeah, I
know that guy, that great guy, great guy. Chris Beer's
gonna join us up coming. Then Bill Orm's gonna join
us next hour. He covers the Lakers for the athletic
great stuff upcoming, Got some Kyler Murray for you, kind
of interesting, Got some what the Fox say, got Lebron

(43:41):
and why putting together a team with Lebron is like
putting together furniture with like Kia will hit that again?
Got great stuff. Let me start with this though. The
trade market for Antonio Brown is heating up. A couple
of teams have reportedly reached out. They'll probably be a
coup more. You know you all right, what's it gonna take?
And then you've got a touch base with Rosen Alison.

(44:03):
What's it gonna take to signed to long term deal?
He said last week on his i G Live. You
got guaranteed money, holla, which is really what most of
this is about. This is about a frontloaded contract that
he signed, an extension that he signed with the Pittsburgh Steelers,
and now the money is up. Now they can cut
him whenever they want, and he wants guaranteed cash. It's

(44:28):
really smart business from the Steelers. It's really I think
bad business from Antonio Brown. But he's gonna be rewarded
with some sort of new contract wherever he goes. And
to his point, look, if you know a wide receiver
who hadn't proven himself to be healthy for an entire

(44:48):
season or be a number one threat like Sammy Watkins
is where sixteen million to the kan City Chiefs? What
am I worth on the open market? I guess we'll
find out. But a couple of the teams rumored are fascinating.
You know how many people have said, well, are the
Patriots right? Because the Patriots neat somebody outside the numbers

(45:08):
almost seems unfair, but they've been searching for a wide receive.
But do you do you really think that Pittsburgh Seals
are gonna go like, you know what we'll do. Let's
do business. Let's give the Patriots our best offensive weapon,
you know, let's let's give it to the Patriots, the
team that we think took our spot in the Super
Bowl two years ago because of the catch rule, like

(45:31):
they're trying to avoid the a f C. So you
cut off half the teams and now you've got sixteen left, right,
And if you think around, you think about a couple
of these teams rumored, some make sense and some don't.
The first thing you have to do is you better
have a veteran quarterback. You can't have a guy that
he's gonna walk all over, call for the ball, cry

(45:53):
for the ball be You gotta have somebody who can
stand up to him. And also the media can go like, oh,
you know what you're not always is open, So you
gotta cut out like half the guys in the NFC, right,
I mean, he ain't going to play in Carolina because
we don't know of Cam's back this year, and that
just you gotta have a big target area. That doesn't

(46:15):
seem that Steve Smith thing didn't work. I don't see that.
Atlanta's already got their superstar wide receiver. They don't you know,
the money wouldn't work. That didn't seem it didn't seem
like it'll fit, like I'm kind of working through in
my mind. Like New York Giants they already have Odebeckham Jr.
Where they want to keep him or don't. Washington doesn't
even have a quarterback. The Cowboys seem good with Mary Cooper.

(46:35):
They gotta pay him four team and give him a
new deal like Jerry Jones. Would it make sense to Yeah,
but it almost seems like too much like the Eagles,
and I don't I don't see it. I don't see them.
You know, they went and got Golden Tate last year,
but that was for the third round pick or second
I can't remember what round pick. You know, like, you

(46:57):
don't go to Detroit, You don't want to go to
Chica Ago because of their quarterbacks young you know, maybe
the Bucks Bruce Arians, and you're trying to like, now
you'd have a dynamic wide receiving duel like Okay and
Bruce Arians. You had been in Pittsburgh and then had
success in Indian had success in Arizona like Okay. But

(47:17):
the two most prominent teams that need a wide receiver
that have a superstar future Hall of Fame quarterback that
have been rumored in are in the NFC are the
New Orleans Saints and the Green Bay Packers. And one
makes sense and whatnot? Now? Green Bay has other talented
wide receivers like a Davante Adams. They seem to figure

(47:38):
out the running game, and they have Aaron Rodgers, who's
a veteran quarterback who can make every throw and simply
need somebody to get open. And that was kind of
their offense previously, which is like, hey, everybody, go out
and get open and air and will find you and
then if you're not open, he'll run around and then
they'll find you again. And if you're not open, he's
gonna throw it to a place where nobody and the
rest of the league's like, yeah, well they're not that good,

(47:59):
and their coach fire. Then you have the New Orleans Saints,
who have um um Michael Thomas right, who's super talented
but more of a great route runner, precision guy. And
with Ted Gain out half the year, they were searching

(48:20):
for that other guy. And Ted Gain has been good.
Ted Gett did make that jump ball catch that could
have if a past interference was called, could have put
the Saints in the Super Bowl. But like anyone who's
seen Ted Gain enough knows he's a number two, if
not a number three, Right, there's a reason that there's
a reason that Ted Gain had been has been in

(48:42):
like five like five different teams. He's a little bit
like stone hands necessary roughness, like if he catches it great,
you can always run. But you had Drew Brees, and
you have Michael Thomas, and then you put him and
you have Alvin Arrow, who's like a wide receiver that
also plays running back, Like yes, please, they're Saints fans going,

(49:04):
oh yeah, give me, oh, give me some of that.
That's great. Give me some of that drug right into
my vein, you know, give me some of that Saints offense. Oh,
that's amazing. But one makes sense and one doesn't. You
want to know which one makes sense. Saints makes sense
because Sean Payton, right, Sean Payton, who look, they they

(49:26):
overspent to get a defensive end last year, so they
don't have a first round pick, but second round pick. Like,
all right, he overspent on on a defensive lineman. He
overspent really on Teddy Bridgewater who started one game for
him a third round pick. He was really worth the
fourth or a fifth at that point in the season.
They've been known to overspend more than anything. He's not

(49:47):
only a great play caller, but he has the respect
and credibility to go like, no, we're not gonna throw
it to you every time. This is the way we
do things. Whereas the Green Bay Packers have a guy
who no Sean McVeigh, right, Like, I know there's more
to it than that, but there's a little bit that

(50:08):
there's a that's a that's at least a little bit
of it, right, Like if I said, who is the
Green Bay Packers new head coach? If you're not a
Packers fami like the guy who knows Sean McVeigh, Like, yeah,
there's a little bit more to it than that, but okay,
and they're in kind of lies the rub, you know,

(50:29):
if if you really want do I think the Green
Bay Packers should go out and get him. I do,
but be very cautious of how he handles Matt Lafleur.
He walked over Mike Tomlin. Though Mike Tomlin is a
guy that allows star players to have a ton of
rope that they made, as he did hang himself with chore.

(50:50):
But Mike tom has won a Super Bowl. Generally respect
a guy and a guy who can be confrontational. Now
he here's a guy who thinks that rules don't apply
to him. Don't blind him. I don't have to show up.
I can show up, but I want to show up.
And then he starts blaming everybody else and it's really

(51:12):
about money. How does that work? I don't know. The
Saints one makes sense, and look, I don't think Drew
Brees is nearly the Drew Brees of old. That they've
kind of hit it with their offense, with their the
complexity of finding mismatches and making all those throws, like
he can't throw the ball downfield anymore. I think he

(51:33):
would have a chance to be much happier playing with
Aaron Rodgers. And he's played in the cold. That hasn't
bothered him. Cold, the rain, poor turf in Pittsburgh doesn't matter.
Like Antonio Brown is ridiculously good. I have nothing bad
to say about him when he's out running routes to
catch footballs. But the interaction with an unproven head coach
and with a quarterback who can turn on you in

(51:56):
a heartbeat, that's a buyer beware. Where As you have
a super Bowl winning coach, a super Bowl winning quarterback,
a guy who understands I need guys to make plays
for me, they have other people so that he's not
constantly facing a double team. They play in a dome,
which will hide Drew brees lack of arm strength. How
they play half their road games in domes as well.

(52:18):
But more than anything, you get Sean Payton, who's a
great play caller and knows how to handle egos. That's
why he was the one who could reach out to
Dez Bryant, not just his history with the Dallas Cowboys,
but his respect within the league and his ability to
tell Dez Bryant where he can stick it if des
Bryant goes crazy on the sideline. Right. I'm not saying

(52:42):
that Matt Lafleur can't handle Antonio Brown. We just have
no way of knowing whether he can handle Antonio. One
seems like a really good idea. The other seems like
it's got potential for disaster written all over. And I
frankly kind of want to see the Packers just because
because of the talent, but also because of the ability

(53:04):
the ability to maybe see what's a potential disaster Like
I like that because Texas Tech head coach Chris Beer
joins the show up coming next, is this the year
they dethrowned Kansas to top the Big Twelve? And is
that even important to them? I'll ask him next. Be

(54:14):
Ian Rappaport if NFL Media reports that the Raiders and
the Colosseum Authority have reached an agreement for the team
to remain in Oakland for the twenty nineteen season, and
includes a team option for twenty if their Vegas stadium
is not ready yet. The sides are ironing out final
nuances and details of the deal. It could be wrapped

(54:34):
up and presented to the Colosseum Authority Board as early
as Friday. Doug, Ye, this is a marriage of convenience.
That's what it is, the marriage of convenience. Right. It's
just a pain in the butt to try and find
another stadium, just like, you know, let's just let's do
this again. How many final seasons in Oakland? Will? Who?
The Raiders have? No? I swear this is it? Is
it the last? Maybe this is you know that this

(54:57):
is now? It's not the This is like Jurassic Park,
right with there's always something you're like, it could be
a sequel. I don't know, I don't know, I don't know.
I mean they around a man out of Rocky movies.
Then they had Now they had an Apollo Creeds kid,
you know, I maiden what's his name? Died of the

(55:20):
Fast and Furious, right, Paul uh, Paul Walker. There is
a strange irony to dying in a car crash. I'm
I'm sorry, I don't you know, Like I'm sad to
point it out, but you know, real life. You can't
do that that much. Okay, it just doesn't work that
way anyway, is still gonna make more fast and furious.

(55:41):
But the being sued thing, this is like the Eric
Reed deal, right, Eric Reed sue in the league, and
then all of a sudden the Panthers like, yeah, we
need to safety. Sure, hell it's out of convenience. Same
thing with the Raiders and the City of Oakland, like
they don't there's nowhere really to play in Vegas. Nothing

(56:02):
else kind of makes sense, Like, sure, we'll do one
more year. City City of oakan sitting. They're going like, okay,
we can still sue each other, right, but we can
pay for the lawsuit with all the money that they're
paying to rent our stadium. Do you want football for
eight weekends? To me ten weekends? No, I'm not talking playoffs.

(56:25):
It's preseason games easy, you know. Or actually I think
they lose one overseas, lose one of the overseas, right, See,
do you want nine nine football games or zero football games?
Which is it? They're like, we'll take the nine, which
is smart business. It doesn't mean you're not getting divorced.
It just means you wait till the holidays are over.
Let's welcome and Chris Beard, head coach of Texas Tech.

(56:47):
They've won seven of their last eight. They just demolished
Kansas over the weekend. Chris Beer joined us on the
Doug Gottlip Show. Coach coming coming into the year, a
lot of moving parts. You know, you lose your for
ever one and done, los Keenan Evans, you senior leader,
four starters, all these new pieces. I'm just wondering, what
were your personal expectations are the Red Raiders coming in?

(57:12):
You know, that's the that's the best word, expectations. I
think when we got back from Boston with the Villanova loss,
we took a little time off and then our very
first staff meeting and team meeting without returning players. That's
basically kind of where we started the whole thing, like,
let's make sure that last season's success doesn't define our program.

(57:32):
You know. Let's let's don't be like a one hit wonder.
Let's don't be like Billy Ray Cyrus. Let's be like
Merrow Haggard. No, no offense to Billy Ray, though I
love Billy Ray. But um so that's kind of the thing,
is just expectations. And then you know, with with recruiting, UM,
we knew that the grand transfer market was gonna have
to be where we made our mark to be relative

(57:54):
back to back years with everything we lost. UM, and
then when we signed Matt Murdy and Tarikolan's in my mind,
no disrespect to the other guys, I thought, those are
the two best transfers in the country. UM. And we
got those guys, you know, expectations just immediately, we're strengthened
and flipped and we said, hey, you know, we should
compete for the championship this year with these guys if
everything comes together. Was there a moment this year? I

(58:17):
mean you guys did you guys were blown out by
Ku that was really you know, that's your last lost
year in these last seven. Yet was there a moment
where you felt like it started to click. Um, maybe
not a moment, but we are like kind of trending up,
you know, like we we do feel like we're getting better. Um. Defensively,
we have some objectives as the year goes on and

(58:37):
we're getting better. And then offensively, I think just really
more than anything, it's just been a chemistry thing. You know,
like we're playing against teams that have had guys that
played together for two years, three years, and we're really
you know, kind of a work and making we I think,
you know, we we were hoping we could do the
foreign tour with this team, with so many moving parts,
we thought that would have been a huge breakflorce, but

(58:58):
unfortunately it wasn't our year. Um. So like even today
when you think about it, Matt three con cooler, these
guys have only been planning together for a couple of months.
So as time goes on, I think our offense has
gotten better because of chemistry. I think our defenses continue
to improve because our guys are bought in. Um. There
was there was a reaction by some when you got
onto what was it? It was Avery Benson? Right, he's

(59:22):
a walk on who got a dunk in the last second.
You guys are beating the hell out of Baylor. It
was four sixty one and instead of dribbling out the clock, Um,
it was a walk on a catt a value, wasn't it? Yeah?
Two of our good, good players. Uh, Andrew Sorels has
been in the program for a long time and then
Avery's a sophomore. But you know, we handled that. I

(59:42):
probably could have handled a lot better on my m
That is something we talked about. You know, it wasn't
like something that we don't address and coach and teaches,
we always just want to hold the ball in those situations.
But Baylor continued to play defense on that possession, and um,
you know, I could have done a better job coach
and telling those guys what I wanted in that moment.

(01:00:03):
It's a it's a hard deal though, right because those
kids sit over there and the crowd, everybody wants them
to score, right, And I mean, like, look, I can't
remember a walk on getting a dunk in my you know,
four years two programs are playing college basketball, right, so
that everybody wants them to score. On the other hand,
like you're sitting there, like, dude, we gotta we gotta
win with class losers class we want to just drop
out the clock. We don't want to be that team

(01:00:24):
that gets the uncontested dunk. On the other hand, as
you point out, like Baylor's trapping, if they thought you
were gonna drop out the clock, well then they just
kind of sit back there and start shaking hands, right,
So that's a it's kind of a hard thing to navigate.
And then yeah, no doubt, and I share responsibility and
what happened, Um, you know, we handle it and it's over,
but it doesn't change anything. I've got a great relationship
with those two players we were talking about in the

(01:00:45):
locker room five minutes later. Just you know, during the game,
lack of emotion and calmness have never been my strings. Okay,
so you're getting ready for KU and they had just
beaten you. Now obviously their team is you know, evolving,
are devolving however you however you want to You know,
they've had injuries and they had had changes. How do

(01:01:06):
you get your team to play at the magic level
that they played at? On the other hand, to still
do what you wanted? Like what's the magical mix to
walking in there and you know they're gonna be ready
to play, but get them at that just a perfect
level of attention to detail, excitement and yet don't you know,
don't go crazy the first five minutes. They have nothing
left the rest of the way. Yeah, no doubt what

(01:01:27):
we do. And I don't know if this is magic,
but we just kind of tend to go back to
truth telling, you know, like instead of sitting around the
coaches Obviously night thinking of some kind of motivational ploy.
I just I'm not that smart. What I do is
I just get the players together, especially those seniors, grown men,
look them any eyes and say, hey, let's talk about
the reality here. The reality is we're playing in a

(01:01:48):
meaningful game in late February that has championship indications. You know,
we're in the fight. It's got to be a sold
out crowds in our gym, national television, like you know one,
let's embring is the opportunity. Let's let's remind each other
how lucky and fortunate we are to be in this situation.
This is why we dedicate our lives to basketball. This
is why you don't have a spring break in a

(01:02:10):
summer break. And you love this game in the grind.
This is why you came to Texas Tech and and
here we are. That's the reality. But too, you know,
let's don't show up and you know, be somebody we're not.
Let's don't let the moment be bigger than us. Let's
don't you know, be out there being people were not
just because of the bigness of the game. So um,
in the end, you'll always get the players to credit

(01:02:31):
our four seniors have done a great job. So where
we up for a big game, of course, and we
embraced it and we understood how big it was. But
where we two jacked up and too hype. No, there's
a calmness and a professionalism around our program all week
led by those seniors. You guys end up winning two
and obviously Jared Culver, uh the sophomore is a huge

(01:02:53):
reason why. And you know last yearyet him and Zaire
and Zaire is like a one and done goes his
first round draft pick. Um. The hard part I've I've noticed,
you know, all of these programs is the guy who
doesn't get to go, doesn't doesn't get tapped in the
head to say you should go to the pros. Like
sometimes those guys never buy back in. They never reinvested

(01:03:15):
because they're always they're watching their friends and they you know,
now you're watching them on Instagram and they have the
nice cars, they have the nice clothes. They're living in
a completely different lifestyle. Mean, while you're kind of back
in college roughing in a little bit, um, how have
you how Like he's gotten remarkably better, he has improved,
He seems to have reinvested in himself and in the

(01:03:37):
program how did You do It? You know what those
guys are and Cover. One thing nobody talks about Doug
is is what a role model they had. And Keenan
Evans and Um, in my mind, Keenan Evans was a
Big twelve Player of the Year last year. If he
doesn't break his tool. Um, just the ultimate pro guy
that got better, guy that was on selfish, got that

(01:03:57):
worked on his craft. I think in Cover just kind
of look up to him and just kind of watch you. Um.
The other thing about Keenan, I coach Keena really really hard.
So from day one, Z and Colver they got to
see us, you know, going at Keena just like um,
we go at everybody else. We don't treat our best
player around here different. We actually coach with Hardard. So

(01:04:17):
that's one part of both of those guys stories. Um,
with Z and Coolber is Keenan Evans. Then with Kolber
it's like, you know, it's not like the sexiest story
because it almost sounds like coaching stuff. But I mean
it's just the truth. Like the guy loves basketball. He's
an old school junkie. I mean he's like me and you.
Doug we sit over in the corner on Napkins drawing

(01:04:40):
up X and I was talking about coach Sutton and
coach Night. I mean, Colvill would be right there with us,
like he would be a big guy just listening. He
loves basketball, he respects the history of the game, and
he just works on his craft and um, it's just
old school work ethic. Like I mean, literally every day
after practice he wants to play two on two with
the managers. He comes up here at night shoots. I

(01:05:01):
literally have to tell him to go home and get rest.
How how important would it be for this program to
be the team that officially dethrones k u K you
place k State tonight? If you guys went out, you
win the league outright. Uh, they've shared the title, but
they've they've wanted for the last Baker's Dozen. You how
how important would it be for your program to be

(01:05:23):
the team that thrones them? Yeah? I think, I mean,
what's really important just to be a part of the fight.
You know, we really don't talk much in our locker
room about winning the Big twelve championship, but we talk
every day about being relative and being a part of
the fight. And I know many objectives when we came
to Texas Tech. You know, we wanted to compete for championships.
And the first thing you gotta do is you gotta

(01:05:44):
you know, you know, getting a fight, like you know,
if you're gonna, you're gonna, you know, pick up that
that piece of business and you better be in that
neighborhood where that business going on. So I'm just proud
of our program. Basically two of our three years here
in late February, you know, control our own destiny in
some ways, and we're part of the fight. Um. But
you know, we do embraced championships like uh, you know,

(01:06:07):
I think with March Madness, it's obviously the best thing
about our sport. It's taking coms basketball another level. But
there's still a lot of value the regular season championship,
the conference champions tournament championship is as well as the
mpt s. I mean we uh, we embraced these emptyes
like no other like because us. If you're going to
give out a trophy, then we're here to win it.

(01:06:28):
And um, we've been pleased. You know, two of our
three years here we've won our mtes. Did not get
the one done you were at in King Karma. But
we were right there. I was with you in Kansas City.
I mean I wasn't with you. I wasn't calling the games,
and we were hanging out in Kansas City. I'd like
to I'd like to. I like to claim part of
that one of those plays you gave us that night
we actually ran in the Kansas game, which one I

(01:06:51):
can't go there. I mean, you know a lot of
listeners here, man, we might try to squeeze out the
baster that it all right. Well, I want back in
the room for people who don't know, like, we won't
give away your secrets, but I did. I who is
I with? I was with the s I was at
the Bois Guys as well. And you know who I
know was um I'll tell I was with the Utah
State coach Craig Smith, and he was talking about Mooney

(01:07:13):
and he's like, man, I love Moons because he coached
him in South Dakota, obviously, and he was very complimentary
of you and the fact that you've called him to
reach out to like, hey, what's the best way to
how this has the best way to coach this kid?
And so he's like, do you know Beard, I was like, yeah,
I do it. I know him a little bit. He goes, so,
what's what's this? What's you know, like, give me something
that he does that nobody else does, Like, I don't
know if anybody else does it, but you guys do.

(01:07:33):
You guys do this everywhere you go, right, you have
a room. And most college basketball teams they go on
the road, you get a uh I guess you called
a boardroom on a boardroom, um uh, like a meeting room,
conference conference room, right, and some of them, obviously in
the garden spots of the Midwest, like you have in
the Big twelve are different others, right, but you get
a conference room. So you have a little you know,

(01:07:55):
tape taped out court, which everybody has. You can walk
through some things. You get a bunch of TV, easy
to get a bunch of snacks, and then like all
your guys, you guys just hang out watching talk ball
all day. Correct. Yeah, I mean sometimes to the point
where we probably need to go to bed and get
some sleep before the next game. But once the conversation
gets rolling, it's we've been known to talk ball, deep, deep,

(01:08:16):
deep into the night and that and that's a night thing.
Or is that a is that a Beard thing? Um?
I think you know the coach and Night. We would
watch some video, but we really weren't sitting around, you know,
shooting the bowl. Uh with us, it's probably basketball, but
I'd say that's more kind of us. I learned a

(01:08:37):
lot from Coach Night, but that was not one of
the traditions. All right, Well, you want seven of eight
year in position to win the Big twelve. You got
my alma manto taking easy on on the pokes, although
you didn't take it very easy on them up there.
I can't imagine when when they travel to love It
that that with with six scholarship players, that might not
not end well. Um, we'll catch up soon. All right, Okay,

(01:08:58):
thanks for having me on pleasures mind. It's Chris Beard,

here on Fox Sports Trainer. This from Peter king Um.
The most interesting guy at the combine is probably gonna
be Kyler Murray. Right. How tall is he? How bigger
his hands? How fast does he run? One bit of

(01:11:26):
news from Kyler Murray is um Daniel Jeremiah said over
the weekend he heard Kyler Murray had bulked up to
two oh three from his Oh You Playing weight of
one ninety and Colorado of the weekend, Peter King said
he heard was two oh six. There's talking to NFL
people about Murray. As he wrote last week, there's more
to worry than just his size, meaning Murray was not

(01:11:48):
only small, but also slight. If Murray has spent the
past five or six weeks bulking up, that could plain
his favor at the combine and in completing scout scouts,
completing scattering reports on the complex prospects. This this all
from Peter King, because teams would run to see a
thicker player than Murray was a oh you. Theoretically, it

(01:12:08):
would mean he would be more equipped to withstand the
pounding he'd obviously have to face in the NFL. Here's
my question, though, if you are sixteen pounds heavier, you
are not going to be as fast right like they're
in Kintalyze the rub We want the four two five
Kyler Murray. We want the two fifteen Kyler Murray and

(01:12:30):
four if you wanted running four to five, he's gotta
be a buck eighty five, right if he said he
plays at buck night at one ninety, he plays at
one five. And just because you're two oh six now
doesn't mean you'd be a two oh six when the
first football is snapped, nor does it make you the
best version of yourself. I want to see him throw,
I want to see him run, especially if he's two

(01:12:53):
oh six. Doesn't mean that he's fat Albert. He doesn't
mean n Eisen's gonna beat him in a foot race.
But it is interesting, is it not? Can you be
the same Kyler Murray at two oh six or two
ten as you were at Common logic would say no more.

(01:13:15):
You weigh slower you are, even if you can withstand
much of a pounding. And oh yeah, by the way,
if naturally you're a hundred ninety pound dude, you're gonna
be it. Ain't like you're an offensive lineman that can
constantly just be snacking on stuff in order to keep
your weight up. And ain't the way it works in
the NFL. He's gonna be playing. And by the way,
at five ft nine and a half, is still a

(01:13:37):
well built dude. Two oh six is maybe a little
bit too thick, and I think the whole thing is fasting.
There'll be five nine and three quarters. He'll have small hands,
and how fast you run is interesting considering how much
he's gonna wear. Are the Rockets back to being the

(01:14:40):
a portion of a previous show on Fox Sport tradio
Fox Sports. Wh don't we call it? Say here's Chris
Bruce are talking about the Rockets getting a win over
the Warriors. Without James Harden, the Rockets could beat them.
They might be the only team you look at and
you say they can beat them. I think there's three
keys for the Rockets to beat them. One is defense.

(01:15:03):
They've gotten better with that. You said about p J. Tucker.
You can't stop Kevin Durant, but he makes it tough
on him. He makes it tough one. It secondly is
the toughness like when Cleveland beat Golden State, and even
you mentioned when Kyrie and Kevin Love hurt when they
made it tough on them. It was they got physical
with him. When Steph and Clay are running off screens.
There you're bumping them here and there, you know, and

(01:15:23):
and suddenly nudging them and stuff. They got that in
p J. Tucker can have free Austin Rivers is you know,
it is tough, so they have that. And then the
third key is what you alluded to, finding the balance
offensively between Harden and Chris Paul. Since Chris Paul got
back in the ten games he's played, they are five

(01:15:44):
and five because they haven't been maximizing him. They've thrown
him in there like Eric Gordon or Gerald Green or whoever,
and you basically are a part of the James Harden Show.
I'll tell you what's what's interesting is you go back
to last year to year and you look at the
defensive ratings in the NBA. Last year, the Houston Rockets

(01:16:06):
won the most games and they were seventh seventh in
overall defensive rating. This is if you use the NBA's
defensive rating statistics where it puts it all together. This year,
the same Rockets, well not quite the same there twenty
five in the NBA. Their defensive rating is one twelve.

(01:16:28):
Last year was it was about one oh four. So
I get that they won one game. We should point
out that this is a lot like we said this
about the Lakers, Like the Lakers beat the Rockets and
then lost to the Pelicans. Right, the Lakers have died,
come back, died, come back, like we we the The

(01:16:49):
idea we're covering the NBA on a game by game
basis is so hard, so tedious, that you actually have
to use the ratings you do because it gives us
a larger sample size and oh yeah, by the way,
the one game in which they exude toughness and defense
and tenacity was the one game which hey, guys, dude,
James Harden playing that game against the Warriors. The answer

(01:17:11):
is no. So it actually dispels and it's one game,
small sample size, but it actually dispels the whole myth
of that. Can they they that James Harden was only
doing how he played because that's how they had to play.
But in order to win, you have to be good defensively,
and they're obviously much better defensively when he's not in. Now,

(01:17:32):
does that mean they can win enough series? Like? No,
it's a hard thing to manage when your best player
is a non defensive player. And by the way, it
should also be pointed on this is really important. The
Warriors aren't as good. You can tell me they are, well,
they got DeMarcus Cousins. DeMarcus Cousins does not make the
Warriors pronouncedly better one because they've never played with a

(01:17:52):
big guy, right that The problem with having his true
center is that you don't switch with a true center.
He just sits there and plays in center field and
helps out on everybody. The problem with the Warriors is
they always play with Draymond Green in winning situations as
their center so that they can hide Steph Curry defensively,
Now you gotta hide two guys, and offensively, the Marcus

(01:18:13):
is not the same and he's a ball stopper, not
a ball mover. And they already have a ball stopper
and Kevin Durrant. So can they beat the Warriors? I
think the Warriors are more beatable than they have ever
been during their run. But there's a reason that the
Rockets have fallen off defensively. There they do not have
the same roster as they had previously, and they are

(01:18:33):
not as good. And the only way they can get
as good defensively is when they don't have James Harden,
and they ain't playing without James Harden if they want
to win big, say, Doug Got Leave show is brought

I know, it's a money truck, but armored truck. It's
not the only armored armored truck service, but it is
far and away the most known. It's the it is.

(01:19:40):
It's like Kleenex. It's it's actually a tissue, but you
ask for a kleenex, right, It's actually a what is it?
What is a cute t because I don't know. I
only call it a cute tip, but a cute tip
is a cute tip. It's a cotton swab, No, but
a cotton swab can be a cotton swab as well.
But cotton swab with the little stick on the end,
what's the what's the actual name of it? But that's

(01:20:00):
how powerful Brinks is, Oh, they get back at the
Brinks truck. You know exactly what I'm talking about. You
don't say I'm gonna back up the armored truck, like
what what are you going to war? What are you
going to war? Or something? Back up the brain truck.
Brinks is the armored trucks. Kleenex is the tissue. Q
tips is to what do we call it's it's a
cotton swab, but on the end of a stick. Because

(01:20:21):
the cotton swab can also be a kind of it's
just called cotton swabs because I'm on the Q tips
website and it says high quality Q tips are cotton
swabs made from pure cotton. Yes, but but they all said,
but there's also a like you know, like like when
you get a shot in the arm, you know you
had a blue shadow wherever they put a cotton swab
and they put a band aid on it. That's not
that's a cotton ball. That's you're right. They do have

(01:20:44):
cotton swabs, which is like I guess it's a pad
where they're thinner yep yep um. When you do the
cotton swab, do you get way in there or do
you just go the exterior. You're you're not supposed to.
But what is this? You're not supposed to this thing? Right,
Like I had a doctor tell me once when my kids, like, well,
don't stick anything inside your ear smooth than your elbow.

(01:21:07):
Like wait, so I'm I'm just supposed to look at
my kid's ear and go like, nam, I'm good with that.
It looks like a spiderweb in there. It looks like
that spiderweb from the beginnings of Raiders of the Lost Art.
Remember when he goes through the spiderweb. That's what looks
like to me. And they're like, clean that sucker out.
There's nothing like using a Q tip and clean out.

(01:21:27):
You're like, oh my god, that's that's disgusting but amazing.
And you can't stop staring at it, right, you just
can't stop. I can't stop staring at it. You can't
stop fascinating. All right, we got a great third hour
of the show for you. Bill or hum from the
athletic covering the Laquers will join us. Plus we got
the press all you need to know about the world

(01:21:50):
of sports. I might have a take or two on
these old miss players um taking a knee at the
National anthem. It is interesting all the NBA players talking
about Kaepernick wearing kaepernick jersey's. I will point out that
it would be a violation of league policy, but none
of them have taken a knee, have they that I'm
more of. It doesn't make them any less a man,

(01:22:11):
or any less woke, or any less uh, socially aware,
but it is. It is interesting. It's interesting because I
get why the players did it, but I also think
you need to understand what that flag kind of stands for.
We'll get to that next hour as well, could be interesting.
But coming up next, um, Lebron James is realizing how

(01:22:35):
difficult it is to build something. And I would guess
that though you can't relate to Lebron James trying to
build a championship team, you can relate to how difficult
it is to put something together. I'll point it out
to you. I'm coming next and the Got Leave Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio has the

When it's game time. Have an experienced player help you
stay ahead of the game. Put their experience in a plan.
At Farmers dot com. Rice Harper still unsigned. Um Oscars
handed out of movies that we all can kind of

(01:23:39):
pretend to watch. Oh yeah, yeah, I was. I cannot
believe movie that I haven't seen one an award that
I don't really care about. Um, but there you have it.
Gotta tell you didn't watch it at all? Didn't watch
the Oscars at all? Did you? Guys? You watch it?

(01:24:01):
Did you music you did? What was the best part? Uh? Well,
I didn't watch all of it. I just talked to
my fiance. She was like, yeah, I want to watch that.
So I said, absolutely, we can do that. So we
sat down and watched UHB about an hour, a little
bit less than an hour. I think the obvious best
part was the Lady Gaga and Um Bradley Cooper performance

(01:24:25):
Lady Gaga Bradley Cooper for Yeah, really good, really good.
Yes That's from A Star Is Born? Yes? Did that?
When that movie win any awards? It did win the
for Best like single song which was I think the
one that they performed are The movie was quite good.
I have none. I haven't seen it. I've been encouraged

(01:24:45):
by a lot of people, but all those people are
like female demo. I haven't seen it either. I've heard
from other people that it's good. Um, but that's one
then like a notebook one where like women are always
like have you seen a notebook? Oh my gosh, the notebook,
and guys like, well, it's actually the opposite. So, um,
the way that it ends is something that makes my

(01:25:06):
fiance very uncomfortable. So I have to find time to
watch that. I actually know the way that that has
been spoiled, and that makes her really uncomfortable. So if
I want to watch it, I gotta watch it on
my own. She won't watch it because of it. That's
like the reason I can't watch. Um. I've never been
able to watch Lost because of how it starts. Oh okay,

(01:25:27):
fair enough. I'm not afraid of flying. I'm afraid of
dying in a plane crash. I had friends that died
in the plane crash. So I prefer to not talking
about dying to plane. You know plane right, plus fly
a lot like you know, all the time, all the time. Um.
But and then I know, like, look, there's a lot
more to the show than just that. But like, what's
the one out outcast outcast no, um, castaway, castaway, cast away,

(01:25:52):
Like I that was before my friends died in plane
crash when that came out. But I still like, I
don't watch that now. Like I'm just not a big
not big on plane crash movies. Sorry, Um. Conn Air
is my one exception because the plane went down but
they found a way to land it in Las Vegas,
you know. And I've I've I've basically decided to um,

(01:26:13):
what do they call it, we're supposed to do where
you're supposed to I can concede that it's not reality.
There's a term for it that you suspend belief, suspend belief, right,
You're supposed to suspend belief when you watch a movie.
And when I watched con Air, which I really like,
I'm gonna suspend belief or suspend disbelief, that's what it is.

(01:26:34):
Suspend disbelief. Yes, ros I'm not great with hikes. I
don't really like hYP and um Skyscraper, the movie with
Dwayne Johnson, even though obviously we suspend belief that's none
of that guy's gonna jump from like a crane across
like that makes you uncomfortable. Yeah, it was really really
like watching it, just the heights and stuff. It really

(01:26:54):
was uncomfortable. Ones I get if you ever ever on
Facebook or on YouTube or whatever, there are guys that
are those daredevils that really go to the top of
skyscrapers and they have the go pros on and they
like look down. They're like, oh god, bless I like
I can. Isn't it amazing how clear those those videos
are where it looks real and you're watching on your phone,

(01:27:15):
you're you're completely safe. You're like in your own office,
your own room. Whenever you're looking at you like, oh
oh do do don't don't don't fall from there? All right?
Uh well, more more movie discussion, more more of our
own fears in life to come. Oh, it's actually okay,
you know this is actually a great We'll get to
Lebron think in a second, Um, what's the number one

(01:27:39):
thing you're scared of? Music? And you can't say like, yeah, okay,
go ahead, man, I would say, man, number one thing.
The first thing that comes in mind for me is
like I love the ocean but hate sharks, Like I
gotta do. You know how rare a shark attack is,
Like how unlucky you have to be to be bitten
by a shark? Yeah, I just it's still uh pretty freaked,

(01:28:01):
pretty freaked out about the whole shark thing in the ocean. Okay, um,
what about you? Rama's well, I think that was it
like height, which also leads to planes, because like we
go up in a plane. I love planes watching them
take off, but being in on my The last time
I flew was our honeymoon, and I haven't been in
a plane since. We haven't been in plane since nineteens. No,

(01:28:23):
I haven't flown or been you know, wait what how
did I not know this? Don't you just asked? You
haven't been in a plane since n our honeymoon. We
flew to Orlando, Florida for Disney World. Haven't been in
a plane since then? What's the furthest you've been away
from southern California? We drove to um, No, we didn't

(01:28:46):
drive a Florida drove to Colorado. Yeah, I didn't there,
Like the Beta Max, I didn't know the stuff. Isaac
Lowan Crown. What's your number one fear? Public speaking? No,
I was just gonna suggest I don't think that John
Madden's using the Madden Cruiser anymore. Maybe you could hook
him up with Romos cruisers. Right, Um, what are you, Isaac?

(01:29:12):
What's your number one fere? Yeah, it's Heights and Crashing
are pretty much tied for the top. So it's from
I think is much scareder than the heights themselves. So
my son has this thing where he's scared to sleep
alone all of a sudden, Yeah, he he had this
is like goes back a week and a half, two
weeks ago, and it was really windy, and we bought

(01:29:32):
an older house that we've redone, but we haven't redone
the windows yet, and so the windows kind of rattle
when it's super windy, and I know it was the
windows or My wife had actually got into a paranormal
discussion last night just because the we bought a house
off of woman she had passed away and she died
into the house. You had pull disclosure she died in
the house, so so we're trying to figure She's like, well,

(01:29:54):
if there was really a ghost when the ghost of
woken somebody else up. I was like, well, there's a
possibility that because he's so young and innocent, he actually
senses things that we don't sense. Ronmost. Do you believe
in paranormal activity? I do? I do too, Yeah, I do.
I don't know if I believe in it all the time.
But there's something out there, something's something, there's there's something music.

(01:30:14):
Do you believe in paranormal activity? I don't know. I haven't.
I haven't had. I haven't had enough of like something
happened to make me be like, a it's out there.
I'm just kind of I mean, like, you know, I could,
I could believe in the idea of it. I'm not
categorically against it. How is it one of those NBA

(01:30:36):
team hotels in Oklahoma? Study supposedly haunted? The Scurvan I
want to says as a Scurvan which is owned by Hilton.
Now it kind of takes away from but yes, the
Scurvant is supposedly haunted. I've stayed there four or five times,
maybe six times in my life. It's a great hotel,
awesome bar downstairs. Um supposedly haunted. There's a floor that's
supposedly haunted. But yes, yes, so anyway, we had it.

(01:30:57):
We talked last night and he said his fear was
that somebody was watching him, watching him, and I was like, well,
maybe it's Grandpa was watching you. He's like yeah, He's like,
but I don't mind Grandpa watching me. It's feels like
somebody else watching me. Somebody tapped me on the shoulder
when I was sleeping. And he went to Florida last week.
They went on vacation, and he still had a fear
of sleeping by himself. He's like, it's really like a
legit fear. He's all of a sudden developed. He said,

(01:31:19):
did you ever have that? I said, yeah, when I
was your age, and I'm still afraid of dying. Just am.
I don't, but I had nightmares over like being in
a box and looking up at a box, you know,
and just the Okay, this is what it is. And
so I tried to tell him. He said, well, what
was your fear? And I don't want to tell fear
of dying. I just said it was that I wouldn't

(01:31:40):
wake up, you know. So I'm not sure I really
helped him, but I think I actually think fear is
fear is like jealousy, it's it's it's it's not having
it is not a bad thing. How you how you
process it, and how you use it to kind of
motivate you. He is really what you're about. Yes, rama's
being that you such really good in sports, as especially

(01:32:02):
college basketball or basketball in general. Did you ever have
any fear in that level of sports? Yeah, I mean,
like I had staged basically what I had. I would
guess I had some sort of anxiety stage fright. Like, look,
I wouldn't have been recruited by everyone in the country
had I had not been able to shoot. But then
I would get it developed and manifest itself at times
in college where I was, you know, afraid of the

(01:32:22):
moment of shoot free throws. Mind starts working and you
get up there and sometimes you feel great, and sometimes
like all of you, all of the strength in your
body would leave you and you shoot it and you're like, oh, shoot,
only you don't say shoot and you end up being
like five feet short and somebody like catches the basketball
and they all started looking at you, and you're like,
it's just yeah. So I don't know, I don't know

(01:32:45):
if that was an anxiety disorder what, But I've had
to work kind of through that, and some of it's
gone and I don't obviously have none of it in
this job. I've never had a fear there. Um now,
I think I process anxiety quite well. Wherein big moments
I actually think I performed better and it was I
wouldn't perform poorly. It was just shooting, like I could defend,
I could throw any pass. I was confident in how

(01:33:06):
I played. Just the idea of shooting. When you're every
when you're thinking about it, you over think, you think
you stink. All right, I want to get to Lebron
James in the comparison with Ikea or putting together something
with a Keia. I'll come a little bit later. Bill
Orang going to join us next. Um, the Lakers, they
have this weird like beat the Celtics, lose to the Hawks,

(01:33:27):
beat the Rockets, lose to the Pelicans. Can they develop
consistency in time? They play Memphis tonight on the road
four and a half point favorites. I like the Lakers,
by the way, there's my pick of the night. Can
they develop the consistency they so desperately need in order
to get into the playoffs? Well? Ask Bill or um

Doug Alief Show, Fox Sports Radio. Here's Lebron James after

(01:34:33):
they're loss to the Pelicans. Everybody saw accustomed to the
losses that I'm just not accustomed to. I'm not accustomed to.
I would never get comfortable with losing. So, you know,
losing Game one to Houston, it feels the same way
as losing Game fifty nine and all this from me,

(01:34:53):
and that's just how I'm builing. That's who I am.
So I guess the idea is he's saying to the
other Lakers, Hey, you guys are way too cool with
losing this game. I'm not cool with losing this game.
There's an old saying in the NBA is that NBA
locker rooms oftentimes you can't tell the difference between who

(01:35:14):
won and who lost if you go in post game,
and Lebron is saying that ain't the case with me.
The problem with that in all Candora is like, Lebron,
you've acted like losing isn't that big a deal. You're
the guy who puts off the air of invincibility. You're
the guy who downplays any level of this function. And

(01:35:36):
now you're like, yo, they're too too comfortable losing games.
Doesn't mean he's wrong. It just means you've helped create
kind of this culture there. I think what Lebron's run
into is what we'll call the i Kea syndrome. Do
you guys know what the Tyson syndrome is? Bill Simmons

(01:35:59):
came up with this. I'm gonna credit him for it.
That Tyson there's so many crazy Mike Tyson stories out there.
Tyson syndrome is there's no story about Mike Tyson that
you wouldn't believe, right, the Tyson syndrome, like Mike Tyson
once wrestled a bear. Like Okay, by that, right, because
you've heard so many crazy ones. That's the Tyson syndrome.

(01:36:19):
Um the Steve Spurrier syndrome which we we created. Uh,
I've talked about in this show before, which is Steve
Spurrier is or or the maybe not syndrome. But Steve
Spurrier is so well respected and has been so outspoken
in combination. But because he's one, because he's done in

(01:36:40):
a bunch of and because he was a great player
in his own right, there's nothing that he can't say.
I don't know if you guys remember he was head
coach of where is he head coach kind of at
the at the end of his run um South Carolina,
and they asked him about playing Georgia and he's like,
and he said, and they're playing him like in the
middle to the end of the year. It's like, well,

(01:37:00):
I like to play George back when the start of
the year because they always had a couple of guys suspended, right,
and people laughed, But it was true, Like Georgia always
has a guy or two, you know, a J Green
got suspended for selling his jersey whatever. Like there's always
a guy or two at Georgia suspended for the first
couple of games, always seem to be suspended for the
South Carolina game. Well, you know, like he you get

(01:37:21):
to the Spurrier area, when you get to Spurrier's age,
Spurrier's level respect both. Ryan reached that point end his
career at wisconsinin there's nothing he could say that you
would go like that that he had to. He didn't
have to have um, he didn't have to soft sell
it to you. Just tell it like it is. Well,
here's the I KEA syndrome. It is way tougher to

(01:37:44):
put something together. Then it looks like everybody wants to
be a GM. Everybody wants to do that. You know,
it's you know, it's created this, right, it's the what's
the trade machine called? Or you can do the imaginary trades,
and so I think it's called the trade machine. Right.
They're like, oh, you gotta do this and the trade
machine and you get guys in their salaries matchup, Like,

(01:38:07):
there's so much more to it that you have no idea.
There's trade exemptions, there's cash, there's guys that are technically
under contract that you don't even remember. They're not they're
retired from the NBA. You can't you and and oh yeah,
by the way, even if you really like to deer, like,
oh this really makes sense, it might not make sense
to the other guy, right, But this is what we've done.

(01:38:29):
This is movie. We've created this Like, look, I could
be a GM. I got a team on Madden. I
created that when I was I was imagining r GM
on Madden, and I did it on on two K
for NBA. But what Lebron James is going through is like, look,
I thought it'd be easy. I thought I'd show up,
we chop at a bunch of veterans guys that Land

(01:38:52):
Stevenson and Gen Rondo and Jamie McGee won a title
last year, and we teach the younger guys how to
win and to take the important parts. Importantly, it would
be easy. Peace of cag no problem. I'm Lebron h raight.
NBA Finals, no problem, problem right, fourth toughest schedule in

(01:39:14):
the West, remaining problem still gotta not just beat not
just catch the Clippers who got blown up by uh
Denbury yesterday, but also got to catch the Kings. Somebody
forgot to tell the Kings they're not supposed to make playoffs.
Even though the Kings they might get Donneghete out of
the playoffs. We know that could happen. But the point
is that if you go into Ikea and you see

(01:39:40):
a desk and you're like, oh, honey, what do you
think of that desk? It looks great, We look great
in my office. What do you think? It's wonderful? Look
at the price. It's only we can do that plus
Saturday afternoon and we got nothing. You know, the kids
are at a sleepover. Wee can all do that. And
then you break out the package and you start arguing,

(01:40:00):
where did these screws go? I swear this missing apart?
It's missing apart. How many times you put together something?
What did you do with the directions? You moved them?
They didn't move them there right there? And then you
start blaming Ikea. They didn't include that part. This piece
is supposed to be there, it's not there, just like
Lebron is gonna blame Polinka and magic. Where are my shooters?

(01:40:22):
I need shooters? Oh, we give you Reggie Bullock and
Mike Mascala. There's some shooters. And then you put it
all together and you nearly got divorced. You nearly came
to blows and it's at the desk. Is it executive
like it looked in the IKEA show room? Held to
the know, it's not. And it was a lot. You're like, look,

(01:40:43):
could I give it to you for two? And you
put it together and you spend an entire Saturday doing
it and it's fine? Or would you rather spend seven
fifty dollars? It's all set up and you all you
press this click and the guys come up. They set
it up for you and you never raise a finger,
and you're like, give me the seven hundred five a
dot Kea syndrome. It looks way easier to put together

(01:41:04):
than it actually is. Bill orm joins us from the
Athletic Billy. Have you ever put together something from Ikea?
I have, I think I have, um, I think I
have like a billy bookcase or something like that. But
I'm not entirely sure that I would trust putting anything
valuable on that shelf. So it'll just all come crashing down,
um do due to due to my assembly error, of course.

(01:41:25):
So is that kind of what we're going through here
with the Lakers. I mean, I like, I enjoyed, I
enjoyed your analogy absolutely. I mean, this is a this
is a team that definitely, um had some assembly issues
I think in the first place, and then um, the
lack of the instructions have been a little a little uh,

(01:41:45):
a little tough to follow. Perhaps nobody's entirely sure how
it all fits together. I'm with you on that, done,
Doug Gotlin Show, Fox Sports Radio. All right, Bill, So
why the inconsistency? How do they beat the Rockets? How
do they beat Celtics? They lose to the Hawks and
to the Pelicans. I just I think I think this,
like everything that about this team has to go back

(01:42:07):
to last summer and the way this roster was constructed
and the players they went out and got um Rajon
Rondo at his age and I mean obviously has had
some real great moments with with this Lakers team, the
game winner in Boston and has been an amazing presence
in the locker room. But you know, he's He's a
guy who's getting up there in years and can't give
the same consistent performances every night that he did earlier
in his career. Same with JaVale mcgeely and Stevenson Tyson.

(01:42:30):
Chandler was the guy who made the biggest difference defensively.
His body just is wearing down, so you're late in
the season, they can't lean on him like they did
in November. So that puts a whole lot of pressure
on these young guys who I think, for the most part,
have been really good. Kyle Kuzma and Brandon Ingram have
been very good. Brandon Ingram might have played the best
basketball of his career over the last month. He had
twenty nine in New Orleans and thirteen against the Rockets.

(01:42:53):
I mean, he has been showing up. But the problem
is and they just don't have enough. I don't think
they have enough guys right now. And like you said,
Reggie Bullet has shown up and he's helped. Mike Mascala
had a sprained ankle, he hasn't played, so it's been
a It's just been a really disjointed kind of season
for this team. And and you know you've got Lebron,
who is um is, you know, putting up numbers that

(01:43:16):
kind of an m v P kind of level. And
I think if he had not gotten injured, would be
in that m v P conversation. But defensively, he doesn't
give you what you used to what he what he
used to get. And he's the clear um, He's the
clear leader of that roster. And so when you see
that the defense is slipping and Lebron is not really
setting the tone defensively and those other guys start following suit,
maybe it's a little bit of a slippery slope, but

(01:43:37):
it's been it's just been I think a season of
of you know, guys in and out of the lineup,
injuries to valuable players. I mean, Lonzo Ball is going
to be out for additional weeks still with this ankle
sprain and bone bruise. Um. He's massive part of what
they do defensively. So to take him out of the
lineup and for them to have to start brandon Ingram
at the point and kind of mismatched together a you know,

(01:44:01):
a line up without a conventional without without their you
know there their their point guard is a you know,
it is a tall order. So so he's still had
a couple more weeks. Yeah, so he's he's this week
will make um the six week market was originally a
four to six week injury and he hasn't even done
anything on the court yet, So I mean, you you

(01:44:21):
can you can then just extrapolate beyond that how much
longer it'll take for once he's back on the court.
So for him to actually get back to that that
six weeks six six week timeline is basically already out
the window. And you know, at this point, you know
you're gonna get him back with maybe fifteen games to
go or something like that, and anything you're able to
get from him probably at this point, after having been
off the floor for that long, it's probably gravy, which

(01:44:41):
is just really too bad for a guy who I
actually I know he gets hyped up because of because
of the family and the number two picks thing, but
I thought he was playing really pretty well this season.
I I tend to I tend to agree with you,
um and and and he also covers up what you
point out, which I don't think enough people are willing
to ad it, which is Lebron used to be a

(01:45:01):
Swiss Army knife defensively, and now you kind of gotta
hide him defensively because he's got to conserve his energy
for the fourth quarter in late in the second quarter, right, Yeah,
And listen, I was and I was talking to somebody
with the Lakers today. I mean, there's there is the
reality that that that, um, Lebron James has played something
like fifty thousand minutes in his career, Like, he has
played an insane amount of basketball over over sixteen years,

(01:45:24):
and so there is a lot of wear and tear
on that body. And at some point, you know, he's
probably got to make some of that up. And so
if it's not him sprinting back every time in transition,
maybe you can forgive that a little bit. But um,
in terms of where this team is in the sense
of urgency and what it's going to take for them
to get into the playoffs, if they if they truly
are committed to getting into the playoffs, it's probably gonna

(01:45:44):
take more than that, not just from him, but from
absolutely everyone. And and it would it would certainly spark
I think this team if if they saw Lebron James
being that defensive guy, and if you watch that fourth
quarter against Houston, he was fantastic defensively, he was getting
getting strips, poking the ball away. He stood in for
that that decisive sixth foul on James Harden to draw

(01:46:07):
the charge. So he still has it defensively. It just isn't, um,
it just it isn't. Isn't that that top of the
line priority? For forty eight minutes Doug Gotlife show of
Fox Sports Radio. Uh what about Luke? I mean I've
been a defender of Luke from this perspective, Like, I
think you evaluate teams based upon how hard they played

(01:46:28):
defensively and the quality of looks they get offensively, and
though they shoot a little quick sometimes for my taste
generally that I mean, you know, when healthy, they were
a top seven team across the board defensively, and I
just didn't think they have enough shooter shot makers. Um so,
even though they were running pretty good stuff, they didn't
have guys that that made it. Where is Luke with
this team? Yeah, I mean that's the that's the tough one,

(01:46:52):
because we know how much the Lakers have supported Luke
from the beginning. Genie Buss hugely in his corner, has
has has always kind of said privately that she and
publicly that she imagined Luke being kind of this figurehead
guy for you know, years and years and years, you know, UM,
potentially a face of the franchise type figure And I
think just a lot of that changes when you get

(01:47:14):
Lebron James, who just sucks up all the oxygen in
the room and everything becomes about him. And you have
this timeline of Lebron and the only only four years
on the deal, um, and who knows how he'll be
playing at the end of that when he's thirty eight
years old. So the urgency that comes with that position
all gets really ramped up. And and I think that

(01:47:34):
the test is going to be on weather. Genie Buss
ultimately feels like they need to get a coach in
who is there specifically for Lebron James to maximize him
over the remainder of his contract. Um. That's what they
did with Kobe. They got Byron Scott, who you know,
might have um gotten you know, had a better relationship
with Kobe than any coach he'd had. UM. But but

(01:47:56):
I think all things being equal, I think Luke's and
pretty good standing with the team. I think when you
factor in the Lebron thing and not making the playoffs,
and the fact Magic Johnson's impatient and Genie Buss knows
that they have this all time great superstar at their
in their midst right now. You have to take full
advantage of that. I do think that they will more
than likely look to make a change just given the

(01:48:18):
momentum of this thing. Yeah, I know, it's it's it's crazy.
Do you think they make the playoffs? No, No, I don't.
I just haven't seen. I haven't seen enough from this
team over the last two months. I think that. I mean,
I don't want to say it's not going to happen,
because Lebron is capable of incredible feats, but this team
hasn't won doesn't win games consecutively, it hasn't gone had

(01:48:41):
a winning streak in in three months. You know, it's
like if they win, if they win a second game
in a row, it's it's it's amazing. What they tend
to do is they lose, to go knock off a
really good team, maybe maybe beat Phoenix and then and
then lose three. I mean, it's just been a it's
been a very um slow build for them. In the
wind in the wind column and I just don't think

(01:49:02):
with all the factors we were talking about, the injuries,
they've had to slide there on defensively, not being able
to lean on Tyson Chandler, um, JaVale McGee not playing
at the same level he was at the beginning of
the year. They traded away their best, their best, healthiest
center for a guy who doesn't play in Mike Muscala.
So I I just I just don't. I don't see it.
But that's not to say that, you know, with the Clippers. Um,

(01:49:23):
you know, if the Clippers end up end up slipping, um,
it gets the past, gets a little more manageable. But
I still think the Kings are a formidable presence in
the West. They play the Lakers again this year. They
the Lakers play the Clippers twice. Um, the Timberwolves are
nipping on their heels. I just think there's too much
competition in this Lakers team has not yet shown that

(01:49:43):
they can do it, and they're running out of time
to get there. Do Gotli show here on Fox Sports Radio.
That would mean if they don't make the playoffs, and
I agree, Luke gets fired, right, and then everybody becomes
available on this roster outside of Lebron correct. Yeah, and
I think I think that that has been shown to
be the case anyway, um with with the Anthony Davis situation.
But I completely agree that if if, if you don't

(01:50:07):
make the playoffs, it's it's should the argument for Luke
Walton gets a lot tougher and we it's the worst
cupt secret in the NBA. Obviously that um that Lebron
James people have been kind of pushing for a change there.
They'd like to see, you know, a Lebron centric coach
in that seat. Magic Johnson, after the after the way
he rated Luke at the beginning of the year, it

(01:50:28):
just feels like that that support is eroding a little bit,
and the defense of the loop, the loop defense, the
argument to keep him there gets tougher if he can't
get into playoffs. But I'll tell you what if if
they do somehow getting the playoffs, that is a huge
testament to obviously Lebron James, but also Luke being able
to keep the rest of this team engaged after all
they've been through this year and everybody thinking they were

(01:50:49):
getting getting traded to New Orleans. So I do think
that yeah, And I also I also think Frankly Alonzo Ball.
I think people will come to I think people inside
an organization, people really watch understand his value. Other people
just look at the shooting percentage and think, well, he's
not not doing much. Um so it's it's it's gonna
be gonna be fascinating, Bill this, this is gonna be
a great watch. Here see what they do against Memphis.

(01:51:10):
Like like, here's like, here's a Memphis team, right, Memphis
is trying to not be good, right, trying to or
they're trying to not have more points than the other
team at the end of games. But here's a Laker
should come in and smash them. But there's no telling
what which Laker team is gonna show up even after
a day off yesterday. Yeah, And I think that that's
and I think that's the biggest thing with this team
is with with especially when you have the best player

(01:51:32):
in the world and Lebron James and a bunch of
and a bunch of young guys who play hard and
have been playing really well, you feel like you should
be able to reasonably say they're going to get this win.
And you can't say it because we've seen them lose
it too many times. They've struggled in Memphis in the past,
the loss they had in Atlanta going into the All
Star Break after getting spanked by Philadelphia obviously two nights
ago in New Orleans. This team has not has not

(01:51:52):
done anything of late to give you any confidence, and
that can change. But until you've seen it, how how
you believe in them right point? I don't know, but
I guess we'll They'll have to They'll have to prove
it here, especially three of the next four games over
team you know this one Pelicans and then whether Clippers
in the Suns like we'll we'll find out who really

(01:52:13):
quickly if both of us are wrong and they suddenly
get consistent to be consistent winners. Bill Bill orm great stuff.
Follow his work at the Athletic, where you can read
all of his daily coverage of the l A Lakers. Bill,
thanks so much for your time. Pleasures mind, let's get
you to Isaac Loewen Krown, Isaac, what you got? Doug
Ian Rapp Report of NFL Media reports at the Raiders
and the Colisseum Authority have reached an agreement for the

(01:52:35):
team to remain in Oakland for the season and include
the team option for twenty If their new stadium in
Las Vegas is not ready yet, the deal could be
wrapped up and presented at the Colisseum Authority Board as
early as Friday. Today, Palm Beach County State Attorney Dave
Ehrenberg officially charged Patriots owner Robert Kraft and twenty four

(01:52:57):
others with first degree misdemeanors solicitation of prostitution. It's hard
to say that any one person is being targeted when
there have been twenty five arrests. These are people from
all walks of life, all socio economic status is so
it is crazy to think that we're tarry in one person.
When Mr Craft got caught up in the midst of
a larger sting that netted hundreds of people through many

(01:53:20):
different counties, Craft allegedly visited the Orchids of Asia Day
spat in Jupiter, Florida, on Saturday afternoon, January nine, and
again the following morning Sunday, January the same day as
the a f C Championship game in Kansas City, which
Craft later attended. Really what I gotta early get a

(01:53:41):
little massage? Gosh, I'm ready to go people lift in
a really relaxed mood. What he got to the ball game,
even when it was late and d Ford was off side,
like he always, he seemed very outlaxed, relaxed. We got it,
no problem. I went back and watched the interview where

(01:54:01):
he accepted the Lamar Hunt Championship trophy from former Patriot
Vince Wilfork. Jim Nance was also standing there, and everything
seemed hunky dory to me. Elsewhere. The Browns resigned starting
left tackle Greg Robinson. The Ravens released veteran receiver Michael
Crabtree college hoops. Yahoo Sports reports Arizona coach Sean Miller
and l s U coach Will Wade will be subpoenaed

(01:54:23):
for the federal basketball corruption trial set for April. I
have a question, and maybe you're not the one maybe
to answer this, but maybe you are, Isaac Uh. Can
you plead the fifth when you're when in a federal trial?
Is there a way of answering if if they're asked
on cross examination like have you ever paid a college baskett?

(01:54:43):
Have you ever played? As I'm like, wait a minute,
is he's referring to craft of the basketball coaches? No
time about the story you just did, because they would
not be the defendants, they would be the witnesses. So
I don't think they can. I'd have to contact my
old media law professor. But I think you can if
you're the defendant, but not necessarily if you're the witness.

(01:55:04):
You can't call it twenty second time out of the
way to stand in yourself right. But technically they're not
the defensive matter. If you like, can you in your
self incrimination? But the judge would say, hey, you're if
you admit to whatever, you're not admitted incriminating yourself with
the law. You're incriminating yourself with the n C double A.
And that's not my problem. Amazing, fascinating. Back to Doug

(01:55:28):
in ten seconds. But first, here's a word from farmers.

(01:57:15):
Anthony Jordan's correctly called the key foul on Tennessee late
in their overtime loss on Sunday at L s U.
Since then, a savvy social media fan with no life
allegedly found a Facebook post from fourteen in which Jordan's
holding up an L. S U T shirt with the
caption quote strolling through d Town, Granada, doing a little

(01:57:38):
sight seeing and look what I saw to all my
obamas go Tigers unquote. Well, Tennessee got wind of this
and contacted the SEC office about it. The SEC, staying
in a statement, quote, while traveling in Spain five years ago,
he saw the T shirt. He said. It was his
intent to make a lighthearted social media post about having

(01:57:58):
seen the T shirt in another country, and not to
express affinity for a particular school. We do not find
this social media post to be acceptable with our expectations
and will proceed accordingly, while also acknowledging Mr Jordan as
a lengthy track record as a fair and impartial basketball
official unquote. Right, Um, I'm gonna tell you something about

(01:58:20):
college basketball that people don't understand. First of all, I
know Anthony. He's a really good dude, and I think
he's pretty good ref. I know he apparently called twenty
nine fouls whatever of fouls. Some of that's because he's
a really good ref and he has able to do
so being friendly with a school or with the team.
I know a coach in college basketball who he hates
when guys that he grew up around or guys that

(01:58:42):
know him personally officiate their game. Do you know why
because in an effort to be fair, they almost go
the other way. Like he's like, look, dude, when he
rests my game, I'm oh and five? Why because the
last thing he wants is me to get some sort
of unfair advantage. So, you know, unless I just the
fanboy thing, does it look great? No, but we become

(01:59:04):
super losers. If you can point out calls that are
cheating calls, feel free to do so. I will review
the video tonight because I have no life, and I'll
tell you what I think of him. I think you
have more of a life than that fan who initially
found the social media post from back in though. Carl
Anthony Towns went into detail about that automobile accident he

(01:59:24):
was in last Thursday and some scary details. He said
that he was in a Hyundai Santa Fe that had
come to a complete stop in order to avoid a
separate accident in front of them. He was a passenger
the hun day was then hit by a semi The
Town's estimated was traveling between thirty five and forty five
miles an hour. Town said today, I'd say I had

(01:59:45):
a five percent chance of making it out alive. I
hit the five percent mark. I'd say four percent was
to be seriously injured and one percent was to be
minor ly injured. And I came out in the one
percent unquote Do you remember? I mean, look, he's a
minister to Timberwolf. Remember uh Malik Seely died. Yeah, people
forget Malik Seely. I think in two thousand got hit

(02:00:08):
by a guy going the wrong way on the highway.
Malik Seely was um was his numbers retired by the
by the ten Wolves. I mean, by all accounts, a
great dude, former first round draft pick and incredible college player.
But he was I mean, like, we're lucky if we
don't have it on the Milick Seely. Thank god. Carl
Anthony Towns is okay. Yeah, pickup truck traveling the wrong

(02:00:31):
way down the highway. You're right in the case of
Malik Seely, as we've been saying throughout the day. Ian
Rapp report reporting the Raiders have agreed with the Colisseum
Authority to play at least the season in Oakland. Mike
Garifolo of NFL Media Now reporting that the Raiders playing
in Oakland next season quote increases the chances of Marshawn
Lynch returning to the Raiders next year at thirty two

(02:00:53):
years old. Marshawn Lynch coming back again again again, I guess.
I guess he's He's popular in Oakland, so they're gonna
sign him. Um. Yeah, this is one of those marriage
of convenience. Yeah, Sary will do another year before we're
gonna get divorced. Right, kids are gonna be out of
the house next year, They're gonna be off to college

(02:01:14):
next year. Will break up Meanwhile, Rappingport also reporting and
Rappaport extremely busy today, though apparently not as busy as
Robert Kraft was the day of the a f C
Championship game, but Rappingport reporting that Nick Bosa, formerly of
Ohio State, is healthy enough to participate in all drills
and workouts at the Combine this weekend. His season at
Ohio State cut short due to a core muscle injury

(02:01:37):
that necessitated surgery, and only played three games last season
for the Buckeyes. Boss is amazing. Um. I didn't like
the way in which they did it. You know, if
he wasn't gonna be ready to play against Michigan, stay
around the team. But um, look his brothers and tremendous players.
Brothers said that Nick's even better than he is. I

(02:01:59):
can't wait see where he goes. And look as much
as the Cardinals people are given then the idea that
they should change quarterbacks, they've got so many other issues.
Having a guy who has a high motor. I think
that's their biggest uses. They need guys that play harder,
have a little nastiness and toughness to him. N Bosa
seems to have that. And finally, the Alliance of American Football,
the New Spring Football League and co founder Charlie ever Saw,

(02:02:22):
who was in studio here at Fox Sports Radio last week,
are being sued in l A Superior court by a
man who claims the league was actually his idea. Robert Vannick,
current CFO of an outfit called Treble Music, said he
had a handshake agreement with ever Saw that was violated.
He is also seeking financial damages, equity in the league,

(02:02:42):
and public acknowledgment of his co founding role. He says
he should have fifty percent ownership of the league. The
a F, apparently saying that it's no affing matter, issued
a statement today responding to the suits, saiming the claim
is without merit. There was never any agreeing it oral
or written. Well, hand take your agreements are can stand

(02:03:05):
up in the court of law. But we got to
see if there's text messages that where they were agreed.
But the idea for another football league is not one
that's new and profound. Get out there and pressed. That
was the press. I got ideas of other people have
stolen I do there's a pretty there's another network that
said do you have an idea for it? Said Yeah,
here's an idea, and suddenly became a TV show, and

(02:03:26):
Gottlieb was nowhere to be around that TV show. You
gotta be smart with proprietary information, you know. Trademark trademark, trademark, trademark.
All right, I'll give you some college basketball picks online.
I think Case State beats Kansas. I think today is
the day that KU falls from the top of the

(02:03:47):
Big twelve forever, not forever, just for the year. Show.
