on Fox Sports Radio brought to you by Farmers. That's
because at Farmers we've seen almost everything, so we know
how to cover almost anything. When it's game time, have
(00:50):
an experienced player to help you stay ahead of the game.
Put their experience in a play at Farmers dot com
are Farmers. So here we are again, boys, here we
are again. The Lakers lose, and the blaming begins. And look,
I think we all started with the premise of Lebron
(01:14):
James is great. He'll make everybody else better. Lebron James
is great. He can fix so many of your flaws.
Lebron James is not the problem. Lebron James is the solution.
And the truth is not that Lebron James is the problem,
but the truth is also that he's not the solution.
(01:37):
The truth is not that Lebron James is no longer great,
but the truth is that Lebron James is no longer
the greatest. The Lakers lost last night to the Memphis Grizzlies.
Now for full context, we have to understand the two teams.
Matter of fact, three of their last four losses were
(01:57):
against teams that have designed their rosters and frankly played
in a way late in the season in which, you
know what, I'm not gonna say they're tanking, but they're
better off losing than they are winning. Is that fair?
Is that a fair way to say it? Now? I
(02:17):
told you heading into the season, one of the things
that we could not create a Calculus four was how
everyone else would play, would get up for the Lakers,
And I do think that's something we're not discussing, which
is you become everybody else's biggest game. And with some
(02:39):
of the fingerpoint that Lebron James has done during his
time as a Laker, there is some accuracy to, you know,
the fact that everybody else comes ready to play. They're
not just gonna roll over and die for you. That's
what happened last night in Memphis, the Grizzlies were ready.
Even though the Grizzlies trade way Marcus Ault. Even though
(03:01):
the Pelicans didn't play Anthony Davis. Both of their last
two teams, which are, for lack of a better word, tanking,
both came ready. Why Because sometimes it's cool to ruin
somebody else's season. And that's exactly what New Orleans has done.
That's exactly what Memphis has done. But we thought, and
(03:24):
maybe this is conventional wisdom, that Lebron James needed another
superstar to help him ultimately win a championship. The truth
might be that Lebron might need another superstar because he
no longer is one. We deal with dated information all
the time. Don't you hate that? Don't you hate having
(03:47):
to update somebody on something? Right? Like, all of our
memories are not like or not like your computer. They
don't just send an update in the middle of the
night and then you have to restart it and once
you restart it, you're up to date. That's not how
our memories are. Especially in sports, we deal with dated
information and and sometimes for good reason. Kansas last night
(04:12):
beat Kansas State. Why because Kansas always seems to find
a way to beat Kansas State in Kansas always finds
a way to win a Big Twelve title. But they're
not close to being the best team in the Big
Twelve this year. But we're dealing with dated information. Lebron
James is thirty four years old. He's listed somewhere in
the two sixty neighborhood. He missed eighteen games, seventeen row
(04:33):
than one game with load management coming off of a
groin injury. It's not an innocuous injury, but it also
isn't an a c L. You know, wasn't anything serious
with his knee, with his hip, with a sprained ankle. Right,
it's it seemed like something that it took him a
lot longer to come back from the normal. On the
other hand, that's actually normal for thirty four years old.
(04:56):
Maybe that's the problem. Lebron James is an extraordinary which
we use the word extraordinary, extraordinary basketball player and an
extraordinary human being, but he is just a human being
who plays basketball. And suddenly he looks like he's thirty four.
He looks like he's coming off an injury, he looks
(05:17):
like he's played sixteen consecutive years, and he looks like
he's not not only the not the best player in
the world, he's not a top five player in the world.
We thought are the premise of the the The argument
for Lebron James needing another star was you put two
(05:38):
superstars together and Lebron shown he can compete with anybody,
at least in the East. But it now appears at
least possible, at least possible, the Lebron James needs, uh
needs another star so that we can hide the fact
(05:58):
that he's no longer Lebron James. He doesn't move the
way he used to, he can't lead the way he
used to, and though he's become a much better shot maker,
his jump shot has always come and gone, especially when
he can't get to the basket and he has to
rely on contested shots because he doesn't get by people
(06:22):
like look all this said, they're one they're one fuzzy
block charge call away from winning on the road in Memphis.
But we thought that Lebron's people panicked to go get
Anthony Davis because the players around him weren't good enough,
when maybe, just maybe, the reason the Lakers and Lebron
(06:45):
James team panicked was because they realized Lebron isn't good
enough anymore. This is all normal. This is all par
for the course. You get to a certain place in
life and your body doesn't react as it used to,
especially coming off injuries. Injuries have more often and they
(07:10):
keep you out longer, and they slow you down more
when you come back. This is all ordinary. And the
problem with Lebron James is he's been extraordinary, but he's
been an extraordinary human being. And human beings are oh
and seven billion against father time and and and maybe
(07:38):
here's the thing I'm wondering, how does it get better?
Because we all, like I said, dealing with data information. Well,
well you know you put Lebron with with that that yeah,
but okay, next year he's a year older and it's
a lot of harder time. He's still gonna be six
(07:58):
ft eight. He hasn't been able to guard guards in
a long time consistently, and now he has to go
out and guard on the perimeter and he's not gonna
You're not gonna move better. You can do it for
a short period of time. You come out of the
box the first couple of weeks of the season, and
take some time off in between, and you come out
and you can. But the ability to do it for
(08:20):
eighty two nights plus the playoffs, even if he misses
ten next year, you tell me somebody at thirty four
who looks better at thirty five, Well, Lebron will lose
ten fifteen pounds. Well he'll be in better game shape, yes,
but he'll be a year older and he'll be harder
to hide on defense and less apt to go buy
(08:41):
people on offense. Right, Like, look, he has put off
this downward trajectory longer than anybody else. But his contemporaries
are Dwayne Wade retiring, Carmarlo Anthony out of the league,
Chris Bosh retired. There's a reason that all those guys
(09:04):
are retired, and Lebron James is starting to fade because
that's what happens in your mid thirties. And just like
sometimes you wake up in the morning and you're like,
wait a second, I have gray hair on my chin.
When did that happen. It's not like you shave off
(09:26):
those gray hairs, like all right, they're gone. They're not
going away now. Next time there's more, and then next
time there's more. I'm like you, I started thinking they
needed better supporting guys to be around Lebron James. There's
a chance Lebron James becomes one of those supporting guys
if he wants to succeed in the future. I'm not
(09:50):
gonna up hold against him. The um the comment that
we're only taking the answer to the question about distraction
with because we'll play for you later. The actual question
which had distraction in it. And I don't think Luke
Walton coached his best game, and I think that that
(10:11):
that Luke's probably gonna get fired and there's gonna be
some massive changes there. But the only thing that anybody
should actually care about is what if Lebron James is
not only not the best player in the world anymore.
I handed that mantle to Kevin Durant going back a
year and a half ago when he destroyed Lebron James
in the first NBA Finals against the Calves. But he's
(10:35):
not even a top five player in the NBA, maybe
not a top ten player in the NBA. That sounds
like blasphemy, but you're dealing with dated information. You're looking
at it at his stats, and if you saw the
stats from last night, be like, wow, you know, trouble bubble,
He wasn't bad. Now he's eight for twenty three and
couldn't guard anybody and didn't move particularly well. Did he
(10:58):
get a fifty fifty call that didn't go his way
on Joe Kim Noah late in the game. Sure, But
if you asked anybody who's actually watching, take the names
off the back of their jersey, and would you take
Janice or Lebron right now? Would you take Kauai or
(11:19):
Lebron right now? Would you take Kyrie or Lebron or
James Harden or Lebron or Paul George or Lebron? Like, really,
we're work. I'm I can keep going if you would like.
It doesn't mean that Lebron hasn't been an all time great.
(11:39):
It doesn't mean that Lebron isn't still in the conversation
as being the greatest of all time. I never believed
he is, and I think some of the ways in
which he's handled some of the other nonsense and and
some other stuff will get to takes him away from
that discussion. But it just because you get old doesn't
mean we can't say that when you're young, like Michael
(12:00):
was old when he came out of retirement in his
late thirties and played with the Wizards. I'm not holding
that against him in the greatest of all Time argument,
But just because you were in the conversation of greatest
of all time doesn't mean you still are. We got
news on Nolan Arnado, who appears to sign an extension.
(12:21):
What does that do for the Bryce Harper sweet steaks?
What does that do for the Mike Trout eventual sweep steaks?
More on that, plus I also think James Hardens making
Lebron look bad. Um. I got an opinion on Anthony
Davis playing but sitting. Dante Jones is gonna join us,
Bruce Weber is gonna join us fresh off the loss
to KU how do they put the pieces back together?
(12:43):
But come up next, we'll turn to the National Football League.
Bucky Brooks will be our guest, and of course, uh
Bucky works for the NFL network. He also breaks down
a ton of tape I'm gonna him about Kyler Murray.
Should Kyler throw, should Kyler run? And which is more
(13:05):
important his height or his hand size or either at
the upcoming NFL draft. Combine that's upcoming next. But first,
using true car you can easily find the car that
you want. With True Price from True Car, you can
avoid the confusion you can counter online by getting a
great price you can count on before you ever visit
a dealership. The true price includes all de or fees
and accessories, and True Car will show you what other
(13:27):
people in your area pay for the car that you want.
Now you know what a fair prices, so you can
feel confident, and you're certified dealer knows this, so they
set their true price competitively so they can win your business.
I'm not sure if you're aware, but over three million
cars have been sold to True Car users using the
True Car Certified Dealer network, and they're over fifteen thousand
True Car certified dealers nationwide a lot. True Car. You
(13:49):
just save on average three thousand off M s r P.
This is a great way of figuring out what the
right prices for a car that you want. Give me
some context to this price, all right, here's a couple
of price is of the exact same car in the
exact same area, with the exact same accessories. And then,
of course, you like me, we try and get it
for less than that, don't you. So when you're ready
to buy a new or used car used True Car,
(14:09):
You're gonna enjoy more confident car buying experience. Some features
not available in all states. That Farmers Insurance. We know
every windshield collision has a unique sound beetle bird boop, drone,
seen it covered it, dr Farmers, we are Farmers underwritten
my Farmers truck Fire insurance exchange that affiliates products an
available in every state. Car shopping can be confusing with
(14:31):
terms like dealer price, list price, an invoice price. True
car shows what other people paid for the car you want.
You can recognize a good price when you're ready to
buy a new or used car, Visit True Car and
enjoy more confident car buying experience. Anybody who's anybody is
already in Indianapolis getting ready for the NFL Draft combine.
That's why we got Bucky Brooks from Indie joining us
live from the combine and Bucky. Let's start with Kyler
(14:54):
Murray right, he's the most interesting guy in this NFL
draft because he's not the traditional size of a new
age of a traditional quarterback. On the other hand, the
speed and athleticism of Mike vick Uh some of the
issues size wise of not much is vic as much
as like a Doug Flutie. What do you think is
(15:14):
more important is height or his hand size? I mean,
I think if you go back traditionally you look at
hand size, it does kind of relate um when it
comes to you, like turnovers. Foe moves in the pocket
sometimes when it comes to interceptions and implement whether because
you can't grip the ball. I don't think it's height
is necessarily concerned because it depends on where his launch
(15:35):
point is. When you watch him play, he has over
the top delivery, so he doesn't have any passes that
are battered down. I think last year you only had
five passes battered down. So, boy, guys, that is kind
of less than ideal stature. I don't think that's an issue.
I think the bigger thing is how much does you want?
And how big are his hands? I think those are
the biggest takeaways that people have when he leaves the combine.
(15:56):
All right, let's let's say he comes in over two
hundred pounds. I guess the question I would have is
can he run his normal four two four three at
two d something pounds and two? Is he really gonna
keep that weight on? Anyway, right, like anybody can build up.
It's like it's like if you and I were to
go on the first date, Like, look, we can go
on the first date and and look handsome and charming.
(16:17):
Can we do it on a second and third and
fourth date? Right? I'm just wondering how adding weight would really, uh,
how it would be maintained on his body frame, you know.
And that's why I believe if he does wait a
is what Peter King reported, like two hundred and six pounds,
I think it's important that he works out because that
would be a selling point. If he goes at two
(16:39):
hundred and six pounds and runs uh to up four
or five and throws the ball like we expect him
to throw it. I think he checks off a lot
of boxes, despite whatever the height is, despite whatever the
hands not just because I think what he does is
he kind of leads you to imagine what he could be.
A creative offensive coordinator will look at that and be like, man,
if I have a player like this, here's the thing
(17:00):
that we can do in our playbook. And so to me,
I think it's a win win situations for Cayla Murray
to work out on the turf if he comes in towns,
because I think it's solidifies what people will take about
him as a Highby Trophy winner to being a dual
threat that is explosive with the ball in the team.
But Bucky, people are going to compare him with a
lot of different guys. Baker make it feel hard. Obviously
(17:20):
played in the same system, and and he surpassed him
essentially every statistical category. But but he's not Baker right
like uh, He's obviously more athletic, but smaller. On the
other hand, Baker was, by all accounts that I've ever
talked to, like a savant at the whiteboard and unbelievably
(17:41):
perceptive and how he would read a defense. And he
was also works Baker's more experienced than Kyler is as
Kyler didn't have as much game experience, only starting one
full season at Oklahoma. How comparable are they in terms
of actual quarterbacks reading a defense the way they play
in the same system one year after the next. Um,
(18:02):
I think there's some comps that you can make from them.
I think the good thing for Caler Murray is NFL
teams have been able to see what Baker Mayfield did
in Oklahoma's offense and how he was able to translate
as an NFL player. I think for Calibury, what you're
seeing is a different style of quarterback in the same system,
put up very similar numbers. It's not better numbers. The
(18:24):
thing that you have to go back to him, this
is what styles do all the time. You gotta go
all the way back to who he was in high school.
There are people that if you ask in the state
of Texas who's the best high school player to ever
play in the state, they were pointing to Calin Murray.
And so Calin Murray has always been the big deal
when it comes to football. He wants three state titles
in high school and he is electric in the way
that he plays. I think there are a lot of
(18:46):
people that as they continue to dig deep onto the kid,
they're going to discover they look, he's not only a
guy that is super talented, but he's really really a
football only dude. And so even though baseball appeared to
have an attraction to him because of he was there,
he has always been a football game. I think when
they get him in the room, they're gonna discovered that
he does have the high football que that you want
(19:06):
from your franchise board back, all right, and then you
have a quarterback at Ohio State who only starts one year,
and yet what a year it was, right, Fifty touchdowns,
fifty touchdown passes, which just just seems kind of almost
seems ridiculous, especially when you consider the fact that, um,
(19:26):
while Ohio State has a good offense and like and look,
Alex Smith of course is a product of that offense
as well. Um, I'm wondering, though, how when when you
look at State and you look at Dwayne Haskins, how
you think he compares and contrasts with Kyler Murray in
terms of who you would prefer if you were building
(19:46):
your offense. Hey, look, I prefer Dwayne Haskins over Calimurray
and I love Calabura. Both of those guys do in
high school. They came through the elite eleven uh camp
start could laugh by trying different. I'm part of that.
So I like both of those out. But I'm gonna
tell you, Duwayne Haskins is an absolute superstar. Dwayne Haskins
is going to impress people not only with the size
(20:06):
and his arm talent, but he is a high i
Q guy. He really gets it when you were talking
about Patre Mayfield and the spotlight understanding the football, Dwayne
Haskins had that. Over the weekend, I tweeted this out
and I firmly believe this book. To me, Dwayne Haskins
is a better prospect than any of the quarterback from
the past two years. And I think it's going to
bear out because Dwayne Haskins is the prototypical drop that
(20:28):
pastor that everyone in the NFL has wanted for twenty
years plus. They will someone that can deliver from the pocket,
someone that can deliver with timing, touching, anticipation, who also
can manage the game for the line of scrimmage. When
I look at Dwayne haskins game, there's not many holes
that you can poke at it. Yes, you just said
the experience, and some people will point you, oh, he's
not athletic. But I thought that we always wanted our
(20:50):
quarterback to be able to deal from the pocket because
that keeps you from getting injured. He does all of that.
I think the one thing that you have to figure
out is but he always been a one year starter.
But we saw your fiske if you know, one year
starter and year too. He was a pro boet. If
you're talked about with Dwayne Haskins, I think you could
take him. I don't think you need to pull the
trigger high in this draft. I love Dwayne Haskins. My
(21:11):
only fear I do the lack of experience. You have
to have a guy who he can learn from whether
he starts or doesn't start. In addition to which I'm
a little cautious because Penn State, for example, it was
a muddy pocket and he did not look as common
cool And maybe that's the lack of experience, right, But
I just think I remember watching the Penn State game
going he's really uncomfortable in there. Is that fair to
(21:35):
ask whether or not he has the ultimate answer for
playing in a muddy pocket? I mean, I think I
think it's fair. I think it's fair for all quarterbacks.
I think all quarterbacks change, but they get it and
when people are around it. When you see the great
Tim Brady, when Tom Brady gets hit earlier in the game,
he doesn't play the same because what it does is
it naturally quickens your clock and it also makes you
begin to maybe peach at the rush. I think ensime
(21:58):
Judwayne Haskins won't have any concerns when it comes to
dealing with pression and space, dealing with people being around him.
I just think the kid, But what he's been able
to do in the one year as a starter, I
think he gets it. And I think he has the
gear fact that that you want. Plus he has the
i Q and all the prototypical that you want at
the position. Um. Joey Bose has told me several times
(22:21):
Nick's better. Do you think that he's better than Joey? No,
I don't think Dick is a better prospect than Joey.
I think Joey had it all when he was coming
out of Ohio State. He had the side be at
the hand skills, he was a craftsman when it came
to being able to work with a variety of different
moves to get to the quarterback, I think what does
if he is a terrific technician. I think he understands
(22:44):
that pass rushing into family business. He has learned from
his older brother, his dad, his uncle, all of them
would be first round picks and so I think he
gets it. But if you're going to add to the
fair Joey to Nick, I would say that Nick is
a little more explosive and gives you a little four
when it comes to the size and stress factor that
you want. But think Polson is an excellent prospect. He's
(23:06):
someone that is definitely worthy betting that conversation of number
one overall, how big it drop off? If any? Do
you believe Josh Allen is actually a better pass rusher.
I think he's a different pastors. I think Josh Allen
is intriguing because not only can rush the path, but
I can run with tidings coming down to tild and
so what everyone is looking for is there looking for
that dynamic playbaker that can came the game. Josh Allen
(23:29):
certainly delivered. Like seventeen tacts this year, comes off the edge,
had a NonStop voter, can run with skill players down
the field. Is he as college at tag posa? No,
But I think this is an interesting draft because the
defensive talent at the D line and the pastor's position
is really intriguing. I think Quinn Williams from Alabama is
(23:49):
going to eventually work his way into the conversation and
number one overall particularly get the Cardinals stay there antipass rusher.
We've seen the impact that Aaron Donald has had. I
am not saying he's an and Donald White player, but
there are some teams that prefer to have one outside
Russier and one inside Russier because it really makes the
pockets for Neddick for the quarterback. But someone who's coming
(24:09):
right up the guy Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
Bucky Brooks joining us from the NFL Network moved the
move The Sticks is the podcast. He and Daniel Jeremiah,
who also usually joins us as well. Of course, Bucky
is live in Indianapolis at the NFL Draft combine. All right,
so we talked about the two best pass rushers, talk
about the two best quarterbacks. Let me ask you about
who many people believe this is the third best quarterback?
(24:30):
Um is Drew Lock in that conversation? Is he? Is
he a market step down? You've got Kyler who's a
dynamic playmaker. You've got Dayne Haskins, you have as the
number one prospect at quarterback. Where is Drew Lock in
that conversation? I think Drew Lock is third. I think
there's a bit of a separation between the first two
guys and Drew Lock. The thing that Drew Locke is
right now he is here is a better prospect than player,
(24:53):
meaning when you go through when you look at all
the traits he has all of that. Look, this dude
is a standout basketball player. High school had offers from
Oklahoma and Missouri, So that speaks to us that Leticism
has never been a force time quarterback until he got
to college, and then he played a system that didn't
really necessarily challenge him when it came from our i
Q standpoint and to his final season. But the arm
(25:15):
talent is Matthew Stafford White and I think Batty Stafford
is the best comp that I can give um to
Luck in terms of the isists enormously talented, but he
has to learn how to play the game. I still
would feel comfortable with making in my franchise quarterback, but
I would have to be very comfortable with that My
coaches don't have to get him up to speed when
(25:36):
it comes to playing the game the right way, fantasy
situations and circumstances, understanding when to take risk and when
the dollar back. But it turns to the talent, he
is everything that you look for the position. Who do
you think trades for Antonio Brown? You know it's it's
tough because um, he is as talented as they come
(25:57):
at wide receivers. The numbers speaks to themselves. Six seasons
with yet six with over twelve whenever cbrs, the problem
that you have is what are you bringing into your
locker room? And we have seen him kind of act
out in Pittsburgh. We've seen the issues that he said
Biben Roethlisberger. I don't really know who can deal with that.
I will say the teams that are really intriguing the
stentss go point in Honors. The Arizona Cardinals are certainly
(26:20):
in play, and I think there has to be another
team that comes that comes into the mix. And maybe
that team is the Green Bay Packers only because the
combination of Antonio Brown and DeVante Adams, but Aaron Rodgers
would certainly be dynamic and create a lot of fireworks
in Green Yeah. They I mean, look, I don't think
no one usually trades a first round pick for a
(26:41):
guy at his age, his stature, and especially consider you're
gonna have to give them probably a new contract. But
they do have two first round picks. There is some
there is some deal making, dealmaking too to be made.
Bucky great stuff as always, I love your insight and
your passion for it, enjoying the Annapolis. I know you're
catching up with all your scouting friends and watching these aspects.
Thanks so much for joining us. All Right, it's Bucky

you to Isaac Lowan Crown. He's got an update on
everything going on the world sports. Good afternoon, Dug. Multiple
outlets report that the Colorado Rockies are finalizing an eight year,
two hundred sixty million dollar extension with third baseman Nolan Eronado.
Mlb dot com reports Picture of Miles Michael Oss has

with the Cardinals through three. NFL Giants owner John Mara
told reporters upon leaving a competition committee meeting a short
time ago that he's skeptical about there being enough votes
to make any significant changes to instant replay, saying I
don't think we're close to that. The San Jose Mercury
News just reported that the NBA has rescinded DeMarcus Cousins

in regards to Bryce Harper, some Phillies officials have grown
concerned Harper will sign with the Dodgers if they make
an offer that comes close to Philly. To the Phillies,
the ability to play close to home and training Arizona
is both an appeal to Harper, who is a Lakers fan,
and of course he's from Las Vegas. Um Morossi goes
(29:24):
on more on the Dodgers a possible Bryce Harper destination.
As a wise baseball friend reminded me the Dodgers front office,
who was known to admire Nolan Arnado, who has of
today is no longer an option. Suddenly there is more
room in the team's future budget. That to me sounds
like Scott Boris, doesn't it. I'm not saying Bryce Harper
(29:48):
is not a Laker fan, but come on, man, what
are we doing here? And and look, if if you
want to just cut to brass tacks, you're like, do
you want to play in Philly when you're playing against
the Nationals like seventeen times a year? Not really? Do
you want to even play in Philly? Not really? And
(30:10):
I think that the Dodgers get close, he probably would
rather sign with the Dodgers. It doesn't mean that the
Phillies don't have top end talent, top end young talent.
But you're like, look, the Dodgers playing in the last
two World Series and they're the Dodgers, Like, oh, we
do even talking about here, but this, well, you know
the Lakers are there. Why don't we ask Bryce Harper, Hey,
(30:33):
how do you feel about Lebron Right, Like, I don't
understand the Lakers thing. That seems like just such a
ridiculous reach. And I'm not saying that John, it's John,
it's somebody else trying to sell it to JP Morosi.
Right listen, he's a Laker fan. And it's trained Arizona.
(30:53):
Remember the Dodgers moved Arizona long time. They're in Bureau Beach.
Trained Arizona play in l a Lakers down the street
close to home. Or it's the Dodgers against the Phillies,
it's l A against Philadelphia. This this to me seems
like squeezing everlast penny out of Philly. Everyone knows that
(31:15):
Philly is a whale. Ramis youre familiar with the term whale,
the gambling term whale. I am not familiar with that
term of whale. I know a music is Ryan music
is Aren't that correct? Yes? I am um? How would
you just how would you describe the term whale? So,
a whale is someone who everybody who is playing against
(31:38):
this particular person in poker knows has deep pockets, not
necessarily just the chips that are on the table, but
that they will regularly go re buy in for more chips,
and so they eventually all target against him because they
know that they can bleed him for all of the
money that he has. It's not a flattering term. It's not.
(32:00):
A whale is not a flatting trip. He's a whale
is also he is kind of a mark, right but
you but you and a mark is a guy you
want to go after. But a whale is somebody who's
a mark with deep, deep pockets, and so you don't
want to take all his money right away. You want
to make him think that yeah yeah, yeah, yeah yeah ah,
why you won that hand? Wow? Great job man. But
(32:23):
eventually he's gonna end up walking home penniless. Right? Is
that is that fair? Is that a fair layman's leyman's
way of explaining it? Yes? Okay, So I look at
the the Phillies are a whale. They're in Philadelphia, they're
in the NL. Least their owner came out and said,
we want to spend stupid money this offseason. They've struck
(32:44):
it out so far. You know, it's striking out and
Bryce Harper and baseball anyway, and now Nolan aren't no
r No, no Southern California guy, not gonna play for
the Dodgers. I'm not gonna play for the Dodgers. That
means that die did have more money to spend. Like
the Dodgers went and got a J. Pollock for a
fraction of the cost, and there they like guys that platoon.
(33:09):
They had a chance at Harper and now this is it.
Now they're interested. No, Harper wants a ten year deal.
I didn't say that a ten year deal is smart. Like, look,
if your bodyce Harper and you're any good, sign a
three year, crazy money deal, you know, signed three years
at a hundred million dollars and then be back on
the market in three years. It's literally never gone down.
(33:31):
It may have leveled off, it's never gone down, and
you're still he's still in his prime. The problem with
it is like, look the union, your agent the expectations
are gotta be an eight ten year deal, But it
feels it just feels like the Phillies are a whale.
(33:55):
Boris knows it. Hell the rest of baseball knows it.
And if somebody else wants to play ball and drive
up the price, that's fine, knowing ultimately the Phillies are
gonna massively overpay for a guy who doesn't stay healthy,
not consistently productive, and that's not really the way in
which you win. Other than that, it would make a
(34:18):
ton of sense to sign them win' ton get it
ton whale, ton whale. What are the chances Cowboys make
Ezeki Elliott the highest paid running back in the league.
I'll tell you next. At Farmers Insurance, we know a
roof can withstand a lot, one exception being an airborne car.
Seen it covered it, Dr Farmers, we are Farmers underwritten
(34:43):
my Farmer's truck, Fire Insurance Exchange and affiliates products not
available in every state. In sports of trade can make
or break your team. It's no different when it comes
to selling or trading your car. You need to make
good choices, and with true car you've got a star
on your roster. So when you're ready to sell or
trade in your car, check out True Car True Cash
offer not available in all areou is Doug Gottlieb Show.
(35:06):
You're on Fox Sports Radio every day. At this time,
we'd like to get you got up in as many
sports stories as possible. We call it game time. Okay,
this is game time Tide on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
You might not be able to get a new car
with your tax refund, but you can make your car
(35:29):
feel like it's brand new. All it needs is a
great paint job. Coming to make out today and get
your dream paint job during their tax season sales event.
Isaac lwan Crown, what's the game today? Let's see, Doug,
what are the chances Soro. Cowboys executive vice president Steven
Jones told the Dallas Morning News quote, we've got it
(35:51):
budgeted that we're gonna pay Ezekiel Elliott a significant contract
at some point. We certainly saw what Todd Gurley got paid,
and we know that's probably where it starts and will
go from there. Unquote. So Gurley signed a four year,
fifty seven point five million dollar extension with forty five
million guaranteed. Elliott going in to the fourth year of
his rookie deal. The Cowboys still hold his fifth year
(36:12):
option unless they signed him to an extension. So what
are the chances Ezekiel Elliott gets more money than Todd
Gurley did ninety nine point nine. Everything's bigger in Texas. No,
I mean, like, look, that's the reality of how the
market works, too, quarterbacks. When you know, if if even
(36:34):
if they're even if he's slightly less, getting a new
contract later on down the road, he's going to get
more money. It's inflation. Like that's the way it works,
isn't it kind of like what happened before this current
season with Khalil Mack and then uh Aaron Donald Uh
just a couple of within a couple of days of
each other. By the way it's being reported right now
by rap Reports speaking of the Cowboys pass rusher Randy
(36:55):
Gregory suspended indefinitely for violating the Policy and Program for
Substances of abuse and the terms of his conditional reinstatement.
That's just reported by Ian Rapp Report of NFL Media. Now,
the expectation in Pittsburgh is the trade talks regarding Antonio
Brown are going to pick up during the combine. Yesterday,
(37:16):
you said that it makes more sense for Brown to
end up on the Saints compared to the Packers. However,
what I but I also said, and I hate it,
hat didn't roup Isaac, I said, I want to see
him on the Packers. I just I'm I'm cautiously pessimistic
about how that will look. Yeah, No, I agreed. What
are the chances though, that Brown is not traded at
(37:37):
all and as on the Steelers roster when the nineteen
regular season begins? In chance, I'm not saying there's no chance.
That's you know that, that's when you go like one percent,
not likely, but there's a big cap hit and maybe
this decide, Hey dude, we're gonna we'll we'll wait, we'll
(37:58):
hold you out. But a very light percentages there you go.
Another star receiver rumored to be on the trading block
is Odell Beckham Jr. Same question, What are the chances
oh b J is on the Giants roster at the
start of the nineteen regular season. I think there's a
much greater chance. Um, you know, look, Jay Glazer had
(38:18):
a bold prediction. He double down that bold prediction. I
talked about it last week on TV but it would
still take a I think it would take a much
greater some in terms of trading pieces than it would
to get to get Antonio Brown because they may get
frustrated with Odell Beckham Jr. May they may think they're
better off with Obdell Beckham Jr. But they do realize
(38:39):
he has freakish talent. He's coming into a new contract,
and they'd want that. You know, he's much younger, they'd
want a lot more. I'd say chance. He's on the
roster today in Boston, several Portland at Trailblazer players, seven
of them in Fast Yeah, Damian Lillard and hit his cancer.
(39:00):
We're all stuck together in an elevator for over thirty minutes, Doug,
What are the chances that you would freak out if
you were stuck in an elevator for thirty minutes five
I'd become annoyed, I'd be fidgety, But I, like most
of those guys, would be on my phone, and I
could be on my phone and it could distract me
(39:21):
until my phone battery. Right now. Once the phone battery
runs out, now you've got a problem and it becomes
Lord of the flies right right, or you know, like
you get hot, you get kind of claustrophobic. Thirty minutes
is in. Thirty minutes is long, and it felt probably
felt like ten hours. But once you get you know,
past an hour, now you start kind of getting itchy
all over. Yeah. And also, and I actually was stuck
(39:43):
in the parking elevator in our building for thirty minutes
a couple of months ago. I think it would depend
on the elevator. Who else is in the elevator, if
anyone with you. And for elevator constructors out there in
the future, how about building USB ports into future your elevators. Yeah,
in case they get stuck. Boy had a race to
(40:04):
the patent office at the top of the hour here
so you can charge your phone in case you get stuck. Finally,
the Long Beach Post reporting but the Angels are in
discussions with the city of Long Beach the LBC about
being the future home of the team. The angels current
lease in Anaheim is up following the campaign. What are
the chances the Angels play their home games in Long
(40:26):
Beach or as I call it, Strong Beach after the season.
Better than people would think. I'm gonna say twenty chance
Angels need a new stadium. That's an old stadium, they
redid it back in the late nineties, but they need
a new yard. And you know this is leverage. This
is a negotiation. There's talk of them moving more south
(40:49):
towards Tustin or is there there's the Great Park there
and or maybe where there used to be another air
base there. There's two other air bases that were there. Uh,
Long Beach would like me though, as the Chargers playing
in Carston, which is north of Long Beach, that's in
the heart of Raiders country. I feel like Long Beach
is the heart of Dodgers Country. But it could happen.
(41:14):
This is game time on the Dug Gottlieb Show. Doug
Gotli Show rolls on here on Fox Sports Radio, and
I am fascinated by this Lebron thing. Fascinated especially why
James Harden keeps making Lebron look bad. Will explain why
next in The Doug Gotlip Show Boom of America Doug
(41:37):
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio brought to you buy Farmers
and Farmers. We've seen him was everything, so we know
how to cover almost anything. When it's game time, have
an experienced player help you stay ahead of the game,
put their experience into play at Farmers dot com. Are
Farmers Well, we continue to react to the Lakers losing,
but we also have to point out that the Rockets
(42:00):
and the last Night now James Harden's um James Harden's
streak of consecutive thirty point games came to an end,
only had twenty eight points, but they did win the game,
which is what's important. But what's the narrative been about
James Harden's scoring streak. He's only done it because, well,
(42:24):
he had to. It was the only way for his
team to keep their head above water, wasn't It wasn't
that the whole thing. He didn't want to score thirty
at night, But you know, unless somebody can step up
and carry the team when Chris Paul was out and
Clint Capella was out, he had to do it. That
(42:48):
That's an accurate depiction of what everyone who covers and
is in the NBA has said, not like, you know,
even even James Harden. Remember Kobe Bryant came out and said, hey,
you know, you can't win a championship that way, and
James Harden said, look, I agree with you, but for
the for the for this particular moment in time, I
have to, and you have no dissenting voices. And I'm
(43:12):
not even a dissenting voice, and I'm not a hardened guy.
I respect the game and don't like the way it's played.
But that's okay. Everyone who said, like, look, you know
what I mean, without two starters, without your other star,
like what you kind of guy? Gotta do right? And
they've succeeded in keeping their head above water, and now
they're getting healthier. And now he doesn't have to score
(43:33):
thirty a night. Granted they beat the Hawks, but still,
I get it. Two things have happened recently that have
made Lebron James look bad. This is one of them.
I'm not saying Lebron wants to score forty or he
wants to score thirty, but dude, why can't you carry
(43:56):
this team? Why can't you take it upon yourself to
take over? And I get it, Lebron is thirty four,
But but the same night in which you I g
out and let me take a breath here and point
out that I don't believe that Lebron James actually controls
(44:17):
his own Instagram account. He probably has somebody who does
that for him? But the timing looks exceptionally poor when
you're like, hey, first player ever, top tennant scoring, top
ten assist, put that on, and gee when it happens,
and he didn't score enough, even though you got a
triple double to beat the lowly Memphis Grizzlies on the road.
(44:39):
I'm not saying you want to win a championship that way,
but if you just told us you were activated, why
haven't you become activated? Right? James Harden activated himself and
I was like, yo, I gotta score more because I
don't have Capella and I don't have Chris Paul, so
I gotta take over her. I almost feel like that
(45:01):
James Harden things making them look bad. Then there's this
from the at the mm qb L. Please tell me
Lebron James wasn't up at eleven forty three making songs
with two chains the night before the game against the
Golden State Warriors, a game he missed due to load management.
(45:26):
I've said this about high school kids and college kids
to coaches all the time. You no longer need breadcrumbs
to find your children. They no longer need them to
find a way back home. All you need is an
Instagram account. That's how I know what my kids are doing.
(45:47):
I know if they're on their phone at school. Do
you know how I go check out their Instagram account.
I can find out what they've been doing and how
they've been doing it. And then when they get home,
I said, Hm, why are you on your phone at school?
I wasn't on my phone in school. That's funny. There's
an i G post about something you're doing after school
that was posted on eleven fourteen. That's not lunchtime, that's
(46:09):
class time period four. Why are you not paying attention
to history? Am I dumb? You leave me bread? You
leave me digital breadcrumbs. Lebron James did the same thing
to Chains, posted a promo video, and I don't know
how all of a sudden, like Lebron James making suggestions
on what's supposed to be in a track suddenly became
(46:29):
the thing. But apparently that's the thing. And I'm not
even being critical of of him going out or hanging
out or making this. A lot worse things you can
be doing than making music with two chains in eleven
forty three at night like them. I'm I'm a very
reasonable guy. I'm old enough to remember when Michael Jordan's
(46:53):
would play thirty six holes of golf and come and
play basketball that night. But you know what he did
played basketball that night. You know what else he did
didn't need load management, So you know, you don't have
to be a milk and cookies guy for me. But
the idea that the night before you take the night
(47:14):
off and it probably it was potentially pre planned, I guess,
although that was his what would have been his second
game back, right, so you can tell me, hey, man,
they have load management. You're supposed to be resting and
instead you're making music late. We can say whatever we
want about Hey, Jordan went out, Jordan went out, Jordan
(47:37):
hung out. Jordan at thirty four played eighty two games.
At thirty three, played eighty two games. At thirty thirty
two played eighty two games. He played every game of
the regular season one too, three, four, five, six, seven,
eight nine times. Matter of fact, even when he came
(47:57):
back at third nine years old, he played every game
of the regular season. The year before he had tweaked
his knee, he only played sixty games. He was a
little disappointed. He came back and played eighty two games. Now,
that doesn't make you the greatest player ever just showing
(48:19):
up every night. But again, this is something making Lebron
James look bad. Dude, what are you doing? You need
a day off because you had been off for seventeen
games and your team was struggling. Like, all right, I
think it's reasonable, catch your breath and then meet us
on the other side of the Warriors. Did you're making
(48:39):
an album with two chains? You know? And then you
read further and this from bleacher Report. He he being Lebron.
This is a quote from an NBA executive a rival team.
He killed the Lakers chemistry. He shouldn't have been so
(49:00):
public about it. Even during the All Star Draft, he
laughed about wanting Davis to be his teammate. Like, look,
all these guys follow him on I G. It's not
what you say, it's what you do. You can tell
everybody in that locker room, hey, you're my guy, and
then they're on social media and you're the one openly
(49:20):
opening for Anthony Davison laughing about it. They see through it.
You can say that I want you as my teammate,
but they hear the rumors. They don't buy it. You
can say you're all in them, all in a winning
and being a laker, and you know, and then they
follow you on i G. You're like, wait, dude, we're
getting ready to play the Warriors. You're supposed to be
resting and you're drinking wine and making making an album
(49:43):
with two chains. You know, then Anthony Davis is gonna
be the next episode of the Shop, like what are you?
What are you doing? Has there been a greater case
of mismanagement than the way Lebron James Ink has been
miss aage since he got to l A. The crazy
thing about Lebron in l A is this is usually
(50:07):
the type of behavior. This is the type of stuff
that guys do when they're feeling themselves. And you start
feeling yourself when you first make it in the big time.
And maybe this is how he was in Miami and
why he turned off pat Riley so much. That Riley
of course told uh Phil Jackson about his his guys
(50:30):
that Phil Jackson called a posse that's always hanging around him.
But the idea that at thirty four he's acting like
you act at twenty four. I have a friend who
has an old adage, which is the people that go
out in their four years, the ones that didn't live
in their twenties. But this is not an old headed,
(50:53):
old veteran rolls into l A and he's got his
business together. This is this is trash man, this is
this isn't They're not buttoned up. They are not ready
for the big time. Just because you can do anything
and everything in l A. You can make a movie,
(51:14):
you can make a record, you can make a reality show.
You can have a great meal and then go a
different place for dessert. And you can still play basketball
and have a workout and live by the beach and
go skiing and do this and do that. Doesn't mean
you should bro you're thirty four, you're coming off an injury.
Never forget your primary business. The downfall of NASCAR is fascinating.
(51:41):
It's a little bit like the downfall of the NHL.
And what what were both of them about? It was
about their diversification. They wanted to get into l A.
They want to get into Phoenix, they want to get
into South Beach. They want to spread to the United States.
But what did they forget? They forgot where their core
fan base was. The NHL, it's the Northeast and into
(52:05):
Canada and they forgot them for a while and then oh,
the Atlanta franchise isn't gonna work. The Arizona franchise has
been a mess. The Dallas they took a team out
of out of the twin cities before recreating a new one.
Same thing happened in NASCAR, Like we don't like do
people go to Fontana to watch the NASCAR? Is sure,
(52:27):
but it's not like check our, but like it's not
like an every year. It's not Talladega, that's not Bristol
under the lights, it's not the Daytona five. We don't
have a history there. Lebron James core business is basketball.
Everything spins off because of that. And when you lose
sight of your core business, Look what happened to NHL.
(52:47):
Look what happened to Nascar? Look what's happened to Lebron James.
Teams in the NBA have been doing it for a
couple of years, right in front of your eyes, but

(54:37):
You know, it's interesting. I told you guys, I'm watching
the Grizzlies, and there's actually a run at the end
of the first half where I would plant. There's a
lebron made like one or two plays which which didn't help.
He didn't post up, and then he he tricks off
a little quick little hook shop. But for the most part, um,
(54:59):
what was I think a thirteen to two run. It
was no fault to Lebron's offensively or defensively. I mean,
Josh Hart really struggled brandon ingram Mr dunk Um. You
know they had other they had other issues. So I'm
not gonna put all the blame Lebronze feet, but I
do think it's it's interesting. We're gonna talk with Dante Jones,
(55:19):
a former teammate of Lebron's. It is interesting that that
even in the height of his his powers, um where
we think of the heightest powers, he can't carry this
Lakers team. Other people are like, well, look if he
was in the East, the East is harder now than
the West. He were not like this whole idea that, well,
they're losing because they're playing in the West. Like, dude,
(55:40):
they lost the Atlanta Hawks, who stink? They lost the Pelicans.
I want to get to them in a second. They
lost the Grizzlies. Who But the here's what's interesting about
the Pelicans and the Grizzlies. What the Pelicans are doing
now with the exception when they beat the Lakers is
playing Anthony Davis until the fourth quarter. And I don't
(56:01):
know how many of you we followed it a little
bit last year. Do you know that the Grizzlies won
one road game in the in all of two thousand eighteen.
The second part of the season last year they won
one road game. And I was at Minnesota was a
crazy things that go bump of the night and one
(56:22):
of the ways in which they would lose games was
they just would sit Marcresol on the fourth they had
a lead in the fourth quarter, Marcresol was not playing.
Of course they trade away the shot, which is all
the Pelicans are doing. And it's interesting. I think this
is the way to do it all along. If a
guy doesn't want to be there, if you don't want
him there, like you still want to get some value
(56:43):
out of him. This is like when you have a
car that you want to sell, but you don't want
to run out the miles on it, Like, yeah, you
still you want to drive it. You gotta turn it
over a little bit. You want to drive it. You
don't want to drive it to Vegas in back. You know,
you don't want to drive it in the snow, so
you get the salt that the you know, can rusty um,
can rust the bottom? No, no, no, but you still
(57:06):
want to drive it, Like what's the point of having it.
I have a v W Bus that we've had reworked
and then we're probably gonna sell. We're gonna sell v
W Bus and I didn't get it fully redone, and
it just becomes I don't know enough about cars, so
nothing everything works, but if it doesn't work, I can't
(57:26):
really fix it. So we're gonna sell it. But I
still like when we go to a you know, a
youth baseball game, when we go down the street I
picked my kid up from school, like I still driving.
Why because it's still cool and I want to get
some value out of it. What's the purpose of having it?
That's what the Pelicans are doing with Anthony Davis. Here's
Anthony Davison sitting out another fourth quarter. I don't know,
(57:48):
Ben a guy who's sat in the fourth quarter so
that it soften but not sit on on advention and
cheer from you guys. And you know they did a
good Jopani. Yeah, I mean I actually like that. You're
kind of tweaking him, probably hurting his average, and he HEARDing.
You know, he's sitting there. He wants chumping a bit
and want to play, Like, hey, do we want you
to play? But we also want guys that want to
be here. And if you don't want to be here,
it's okay. Let's be not be non confrontational about this.
(58:09):
Is actually the magic to Brad Stevens is he's not
at the confrontation. Thing that has a short shelf life.
This is smart from Danny Ferry. I'm not gonna be confrontational.
I'm not gonna not play you, but I'm not gonna
brate you for not want to be here. You wanna
be here, Fine, we're gonna play you. And then we
get to winning time in the fourth quarter, like you're
not really into It's okay, no problem, You're still getting paid.
(58:31):
We're still gonna play you, just on the fourth quarter music.
Do you have a problem with that? Do you like
that philosophy? Well, I kind of feel like it should
be one or the other. It just seems like he,
you know, he's getting booed in like pre game and
don't make this sound like I think that it's you know,
Anthony Davis should be like, oh woe is me? You know,
(58:52):
let's take pity on the guy. I clearly think him
and maybe not so much him. Maybe he just told
Rich Paul like, hey man, I kind of want out
of here, and then agent goes and totally botches this
whole situation. I mean, we've been over all the drama
that went down between them and the Lakers, but I
do kind of think there's there comes a certain point
of like every single night at a home game, this
guy goes on pregame warm ups and he's getting booed,
(59:15):
and then they're playing him like twenty minutes a game.
They're taking him off in the fourth quarter. It's kind
of just a whole sham. And I just look at
it from like the NBA's perspective, and I'm almost just like,
make it one thing or the other. Like he either
goes and he plays and it's whatever thirty five minutes
a game and they're out there trying to win, or
you just make an exception and go, okay, sure, just
(59:37):
if if you guys are trying to protect your asset
and if he's not going to go out there and
give it a percent, then just let him sit on
the bench and then you guys can trade him when
the season's over. Yeah, but again, that that means he wins.
That that means he wins. Like, I want to get
some bout what's the purpose of having Anthony Davis. You're
not gonna play him? I mean, I agree, but I
(59:59):
think the purpose is that you were hoping that you
would get to keep him, and now he's made it
pretty clear. Anywhere but New Orleans and so now the
circumstances change, right, No, no, no, I understand. And so
if it's anywhere but New Orleans, like he doesn't want
to be there, okay, we also want to improve our
own stock and trying to get a draft pick, so
we play him. Let play a star player less you know,
(01:00:21):
and you know, and and also basketball players play basketball.
This is a little bit like the Barkley thing on
Zion Williamson, this idea of him sitting out Like basketball
players play basketball. We just won't play at the end
of the end of a game to try and win.
I actually think this is oftentimes when you try and
please everybody, you please nobody. This one is not trying
to please anybody. You're not trying to please Anthony Davis
(01:00:44):
or his guys. You're not trying to please your fans.
You just get as much value as you can out
of it. Like, look, are you gonna Are you gonna
buy the car at the end of the least? No,
but you still need to you want to drive up
all of those miles you possibly can. I understand your perspective.
I I just I'm going to disagree with it. Let's

Dan loves loves a good game. So Friday, he'll guest
host for me because I'm guest hosting for Colin Cowherd.
He'll have a co host. His name is Dante Jones.
Of course, he was a star at Duke In College
and playing the NBA one NBA Championship alongside Lebron James
and kind of to to to sit in for me
on Friday. Of course, you see him on all of
(01:03:40):
our Fox one TV shows. Does a great job. Dante
joins us on the Doug Gotli Show on Fox Sports Radio.
What do you think of how the Lakers played last night?
I didn't. I thought that they gave a good effort.
I just um didn't like the way they finished the game,
and obviously they played that Lebron took off, like I
(01:04:00):
just thought that you could have given more effort and
some of those instances, and I think the lack of
defensive team defense has beens Achilles here this season. Yeah,
it's interesting because before he got hurt, they were like
top seven across the board defensive and some of it
was Tyson. Chandler just seems to be running out of
gas from the time he was traded he was and
(01:04:21):
and they don't have Alonzo ball. But but Lebron being
different than he used to be, like has he aged?
Is it coming off of injury, not being in shape?
Why isn't he able to be as active defensively as
his reputation would lead you to believe. It's looking like
a combination of Um coming off the injury and not
(01:04:43):
being in full shape like he normally is to make
the place that he normally all his teammates and the fans.
Ultimately with Um, those two put a little bit harder
on him because he takes such an offensive load that
with with rebound the ball and assist and making plays
would be what desists and scoring also, So it looked
like his conditioning coming down the line after the injury
(01:05:06):
is what spam hamper him and making him seem like
he's looking like he lost the staff or what it happened,
what may have you at that point in time. But
I don't think he's lost anything. I just think he's
in a different type of shape right now according to
where we're at in the season and according to what
he normally looks like after because he's never had an
injury like this before. Is it possible that he's also
lost the step? Like he he's thirty four, he's played
(01:05:27):
a ton of hoop, like sixteen years in the NBA.
I mean, Dante, I don't know. I don't know how
you move. But um, I played in the NBA Celebrity
Game one year and I remember, like Rick Buker was like, man,
Tim Hardaway is coming for you, Mitch Richmond's coming for you.
And I remember watching those guys run. It was painful
to watch them run. And look, they had been out
of the NBA for a couple of years. But the
(01:05:48):
idea was like, look, when you wear so much tread
off your tires playing the NBA and he's playing eight
straight finals, is it possible there's just some tread worn off?
And yes, the injury is a part of it, but
part of looking slower is thirty to sixty whatever he
weighs and the treads ward off. Well, I don't I'm
not thinking that's what it is, because there was a
(01:06:09):
point in time in the season where he's looking like
the same bow Lebron. I think it's going to become
a point in time where he planned tolls for a
little bit before he starts to fall off, Like, I
don't think it's just a one year you're doing amazing
things and you just fall off the next year. No.
He he looks like he's been looking like himself at
a point time before the injury, and I thought he
could get in better shape than what he was at
that point in time. But now he's taken two steps
(01:06:30):
back with this injury and possibly gained a little weight,
and that could be why he looks a step slower.
But it just is what it is. Sometimes some of
these injuries you cannot bounce back from and be yourself with,
especially in the in the lower extremity, like the growing area,
Like that's tough to come back and just be as
athletic or be as fast. Like. These things are something
that he normally doesn't deal with, and now he has
(01:06:52):
to and adjust and and and fight through it. And
that's normally like not what he used to doing. Yeah,
it's interesting. I look, I'm I understand that guys live
a different lifestyle than I live. I understand that some
guys don't need sleep. Um, but the to change thing
was that like the night before he was supposed to
(01:07:14):
have the day off playing against the Golden State Warriors
in a locker room, in a locker room with Lebron James.
Is that a bad look, especially when the team is
struggling at this point in time to find an identity
and and and to go on a run. I think
it was a bad look and that just comes just
you just chalk that up to experience at this point
(01:07:35):
in time. Like he may have not looked at it
from a full perspective of how it could affect his teammates.
He probably was just living in a moment, probably got
a call and was like, you know what, come by
the studio and let's do this. But it ultimately has
had an effect on how the perception in the media,
his perception to his teammates, especially coming off injury. It
doesn't it does look bad and and it looks like
(01:07:56):
the decision that that probably in hindsight, he may have
one another direct. How flexible is this in the off season?
Very flexible because he gets an opportunity to heal Let's
say he decaid he make the playoffs, or they don't
make the playoffs. They make the playoffs, they made last
a round or two, but he gets more time for
his body to heal. He gets the first full offseason
to heal. They get to make some roster adjustments, and
(01:08:19):
they understand what he needs more. They understand his personality
and what he brings and what kind of personalities meshed
well with him. I get that. I think they get
a chance to build that team up on another level,
and I think they come back fresh, and they and
and whoever's left, they get to understand expectations of how
they need to grow, they need to do to be
next to him, and I think it's it moves in
a better direction next year. Dante Jones Jonnius in the
(01:08:42):
Dug Out Lips Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um,
what about the Celtics. They I watched him against the
Bucks and that looked like a prize fight, right, I
mean back and forth Kyrie and Janice and obviously the
Bucks end up winning. That's going back to last well
that was that last Thursday night, great basket ball game. Um,
but there's a struggle with consistency there. There's a struggle
(01:09:04):
with integrating Kyrie and Hayward, and Hayward hasn't looked the
same with the guys that went to the Eastern Conference finals.
Do you think they can fix themselves before the playoffs.
I don't think they can. I think it's a matter
of what the perception of what Kyrie might do in
the offseason. It's a matter of those guys and um,
the young guys knowing that they're possibly not going to
(01:09:25):
be there after this playoff run. Um, they may have
too much talent at this point in time, not enough
minutes to go around to so somebody can have a
defined role and know what to expect on a nightly basis.
Like guys sometimes when they don't know what to expect
from their minutes or don't get enough minutes, their performance
can directly be affected. And it can be tough for
(01:09:47):
a guy because if you could last year when you
were getting twenty five minutes the game and you guys
were winning, and now you may be getting seventeen and
and and and those eight minutes could be a portion
of your time when you got the most of it done,
they could affect you mentally and it could affect your performance.
So it's just a lot of a lot of variables
going on with that team right now because of just
(01:10:08):
the expectation to win. Dante Jones joining us on the
dug outlip Show. So who do you like in the East?
I like Toronto because they've been through the playoff wars.
Their roster has been through playoffs wars. Um, they've added
some nice pieces in market songs or everyone um, and
I think they've they've been through the grind of this playoffs.
(01:10:30):
Milwaukee seems like an amazing regular season team. I just
don't know how they're gonna be able to take these
bumps in the playoffs. But they did get shooting um,
they have a little bit of experience. They seem like
they have a chip on their shoulder. I think that
would be a great conference finals matchup, but I think
Toronto ultimately pulling out with the closer and Kauai and
(01:10:51):
Janna's getting their ability to see what it takes to
get to that next level. But he's having an MVP season.
I think those two of the teams to look for
in going forth. In conference finals, DeMarcus Cousins got a
technical which has since been rescinded, where a shoe was
on the court and he threw it off the court.
I thought that was that was standard operating procedure, right,
(01:11:12):
somebody loses the shoe and you throw it as far
from the court as possible. You know what, I would
have got the same tech because I thought that was
standard proceeding to like somebody shoes out there. I'd have
thrown it in the crowd and we've got a couple
of laughs off of it. I didn't see that that
was necessary. I didn't see like I just sometimes the
rest can be a little too overcritical on these plays.
And it depends on who the ref is because some
some of them will laugh at it and just let
(01:11:32):
it go or not pay attention to it at all.
So so, what, what's the craziest technical you've ever gotten?
My craziest technical is, uh, probably the last technical I
got in the playoffs when we were playing Toronto and
I had a dunk and I just told I told
the NFL and not you better not jump and I
gotta check for it. You got a technical you better
(01:11:56):
not jump. Yeah, you better not jump after getting it
done something after getting done, because yeah, it wasn't it
wasn't like it wasn't like a threat because I I
know guys that they were like you better not jump,
thinking like I'm gonna check out your legs. It was
you better not jump. Because like you know, he's talking trash.
After you get it done right right, you better not jump.
Was at the end of the game, just just in competing,
(01:12:17):
just having fun, like you better not jump. And then
I end up getting a check. I got kicked out
this game for this end up getting a check. And
then one of the other young guys on the team
came up to me, don't talk to my guy like
that and started yapping, and I said, um, I did.
I didn't even curse. I didn't I got to throw
out the game by not even cursing, Like what or
(01:12:40):
what you've been talking to my team back that I said?
Or what? Yeah? I got said, I got a check
and got kicked out. That it happened that fast. Yeah,
and then you've gotten Have you gotten kicked out when
you're in street clothes? Haven't you got an attack? Rbance
in city's and got kicked out. I got a check
On the sideline Kevin Durant which yapping to our bench
and all I got up and said, listen, man, um
(01:13:04):
like you must you must have some like protection because
this is not you, Like, this is not you, This
is not how you normally get down. And he walked
up and started talking to me and said something said something,
said something crazy and not I just I responded back
and now he he walked over to me and I
got to text because the ref could not see what
he was saying. It's amazing because KD has gone from
(01:13:27):
he was a guy who early in his career said
a lot of fake tough guys in this league, and
now he's kind of become this one. When when did
that happen? That's what that was. That was my and
that was at the beginning of it, Like I was like, listen,
that's not you. That was my that was my play
to him because I was speaking to all the words
that were being thrown around, some words you just not
can't say to another man. I was speaking to that
(01:13:50):
if my teammates weren't gonna stick up for it. Like
I was like, listen, this is getting out of control.
Like you gotta watch I talk to another man on
the court because it could it could turn into something
that doesn't have to And now all of a sudden,
just turned into this enforcer when this is not true.
This is not the guy that we know. That was
where I was going with it, and I gotta check
who's the baddest boy in the NBA to cover right now,
(01:14:10):
not not not historically historically you'd go you know, if
you want to go Lebron, fine, but I think we
both agree like cover Michael Jordan's historically. I was saying, well,
I'm in right now, right now, the hardest cover in
basketball right now. Um, it seems like Yannis because he's
just because he's getting he's so long, and he's getting
(01:14:31):
wherever he wants to, and then he has a nerve
to be shooting threes right now and that is something
because people have to give him space because he can
get the basket so well. So he is he seemed
like you really can't stop him from getting a dunk
or getting a layout without having to fail. Like it's
all about his will, his motor, him being in shape,
(01:14:51):
that he could dominate the game in transition and the
half court by his athleticism and his lemb but in
the playoffs, will be able to climb into him, right,
You'll be able to body him. And and you know
the hard part, by honest, is if you play off him,
he gets a head of steam and he can just
you know, do one of those high dribbles over you,
So you gotta gotta do the Pja Tucker with Durant
and get to his body. But Durant can make those
(01:15:13):
difficult shots, whereas I don't think your honest is at
that point. Well, well you're right and you and you
cannot discount Kevin Durant, like like you make a great point.
Kevin Durant makes tough shots. Um, he finishes with the
best of him. He's probably the toughest shot maker we
have right now because he can get to any sport,
any any place on the basketball call and he gets
you over basically everybody. P J is a unique cover
(01:15:36):
for him because PJ is strong enough to take away
his space and pushing the certain spots on it on
on the basketball court. But he has to ultimately have
somebody behind him like Clint Propella um to be able
to protect the basket. So Kevin Durant is up there
like he is probably he actually probably is number one.
I'm sorry, but y honest, this is where like the
playoffs is gonna come into playoff because the physicality goes
(01:15:56):
up another notch every level that you go. So is
he going to be able to fight through this next
level of physicality because it's not going to be like
the regular season. So that's why I like, that's why
I said Toronto when you ask him before, because I
want to see how he fights through contact in the
first round, in the second round, and the ultimate conference
final comes and then like it's really like no holds barred,
so it's going to get they got plus they got
(01:16:19):
Kauai who you know, and man, it's gonna gonna be
amazing to watch, and you can you can listen to
Dante Jones is Friday filling in for me with Dan Buyer.
It would be great stuff. I can't wait to listen
as well, driving home from doing Calhard Dante, thanks for
filling in and even more appreciative of you joining us,
giving us your insight. Of course, I can't wait. Guys.
All right, it's Dante Jones joining us on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Josh Rose into the Giants gould to be
(01:16:41):
a reality. We'll discuss next. At Farmers Insurance, we know
a roof can withstand a lot. One exception being an
airborne car seen it covered it. Dr Farmers, we are
Farmers underwritten my Farmers truck fire insurance exchanges that affiliates
products on of the in every state. Car shopping can
(01:17:03):
be confusing with terms like dealer price, list price, an
invoice price. True Car shows what other people paid for
the car you want. You can recognize a good price
when you're ready to buy a new or used car.
Visit True Car and they enjoy more confident car buying
experience every day. This time of the dug Otlip Show,
(01:17:27):
we we we play back for you a Porsche of
a previous show on Fox Sports Warner Fox Sports Radio,
and then we react to it. We call it uh.
This was in fact earlier today, earlier today and kind
of an interesting discussion with Joel Klatt who sat on
the couch for The Herd. He was discussing Kyler Murray
(01:17:50):
and what Kyler Murray means for Josh Rosen. There's nobody
in this draft at that position except for Kyler Murray
that makes your team better the first day. Steps on it, Arizona.
You have to pick GM. Do you take him? Absolutely?
What do you do with Josh rose I trade him
to New York because they're hung up on height. That's
what I would do. And here's why, because I think
(01:18:10):
quarterbacks and then in the modern day NFL, and I
think Brady and Belichick, you can you can say that
they're not modern. They're absolutely modern. There may be more
modern than anybody in the game. Why because they are
so agile in terms of their schematics. Think of how
how many different styles of schematics they've used to win
Super Bowls, and they continue to morph and adjust based
(01:18:32):
on what the league gives him, based on what their
roster gives them, and they go out there and win.
That matches is made in heaven. Not because just Brady
is great or just Belichick is great, but they're great
for each other. Brady doesn't care the style that he
uses to go win. He can throw it to Moss,
he can throw it to Welker, he can throw it
to Edelman. Belichick, by the way, requires that out of
his quarterback. So my whole contention is, if you're Cliff Kingsbury,
(01:18:55):
it's not about you, it's about the match. You've got
to have a guy that's going to take what you
believe and go put it out there on the field
to the best possible um efficiency that he possibly can.
And I think that's Kyler. I'm look, I think that
Cliff Kingsbury would probably like to go with Kyler. He
(01:19:17):
thinks Kyler is more of a baller. He thinks that
Kyler's maybe more of a winner, and that yeah, he
could do some more creative things. I also don't think
that Cliff Kingsbury makes this decision. This is a Steve
Kim decision. Period stop, end of story. Because when you
when you hire a coach who got fired as a
head coach in college and was an offensive coordinator for
(01:19:39):
thirty seconds the USC and I like the Cliff Kingsbury idea.
I'm not saying this because I think it. I'm saying
it because I know it. Cliff Kingsbury does not have
say in this deal. He just does not do. I
think that the Giants Giants will be will be a
home run for the Giants. The problem is, I don't
(01:20:00):
know what the everyone's evaluation of Josh Rosen is. But
the Rosen thing would work in New York eventually, right
like he'd probably be the starter and he'd probably had
to figure out a way to make Eli kind of
the long standing backup or vice first and make him
earn the starting spot, and it would be it would
it would fix what I think was a mistake in
(01:20:22):
taking running back instead of quarterback last year. I don't
think I'd rather have Donald than Rosen, but it would
link the two in the same stadium be fascinating. But
none of this is Cliff Kingsbury's decision. We like, we
all act like like coaches make calls on quarterbacks, and
and maybe Cliff Kingsbury should. He's the quarterback guru, but
(01:20:44):
I've been led to believe he does not have even
close to that sort of power. Oh yeah, by the way,
none of this works unless they fix that offensive line.
I don't care who the quarterback is. And oh yeah,
by the way, if you're not two dred pounds, you're
gonna get rag dolls as a quarterback in the NFL,
rag dot if they can catch you. But eventually they
do because you don't get faster. Everybody else does. I
(01:21:09):
do not. I'm not a big Rosen guy just because
Rosen isn't somebody that anyone who's ever played with him
comes across going like, you know, who's awesome, Josh Rosen?
Have you heard any Arizona Cardinals come out and go like,
you know who's awesome? Josh Rosen? And he's a really
good quarterback. And he's not a bad guy. There's no
nothing bad about him. There's no bad, there's no evil,
(01:21:32):
there's no like nowhere lurky. He's just one of those guys.
It's really smart. Once you know he's really smart, he's
really good and thinks he's really good. It's just there's
something that there's a leadership quotient. There's a everybody loves
Baker Bayfield. You don't have to like Aaron Rodgers. Most
guys like playing with Aaron Rodgers. And it doesn't feel
(01:21:55):
like I don't feel like there isn't that with Josh Rosen.
Doesn't mean he's a bad leader. He's just not a
leader of men. She's not a guy that people are like,
you know what, I love that guy. And you can
have a great conversation with Josh and you can be like, man,
I respect you. Do you like him? I don't know
because you're always trying to figure out what Josh Rosen,
(01:22:17):
if he likes you or as other quarterbacks give you
this sense even if it's not the case that they
like you. I think Ryan, you were with me the
Super Bowl, right, quarterbacks come up every year, Baker comes
up and I've I've defended Baker most of Baker's actions,
(01:22:38):
but that has nothing to do with it. He does
give out that air was like, I think are we friends?
That quarterback thing Philip Rivers? That training camp was the
one I like? Is Rivers and Doug best friends? Because
it seem right now? And he's like, we gotta do
this more often? Have we done it ever before? Again? No,
but he just he just knows how to say, like
I will say any knight about Iver ever ever, Lebron
(01:23:03):
James is an all time great. There's some truth that
need to be laid out. We'll do so next on
the Doug Godlip Show, What Up to God Leave Show?
Fox Sports Radio, which of course is brought to you
(01:23:23):
by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so we
know how to cover almost anything. When it's game time.
Have the experience player to help you stay ahead of
the game. Put their experience in a play at Farmers
dot com. We are Farmers. Stop me if you heard
this before, but the Lakers lost to an inferior opponent
(01:23:48):
yet again? Like, wait, is God Live doing the same show? Yes?
What I did was I recorded the show fifteen times
previously this year you're like, really, no, no, I'm kidding, kidding,
actually am I am? I? Uh no? I mean the
(01:24:11):
Lakers lost to the Grizzlies, who outplayed him, and I'll
admit very sketchy offensive foul called Lebron James, who whom
they had a nasty spin move off a drive and
Joakim joke him Noah fell down like he got shot
out of a cannon. Like. I'll admit that was a
shaky call. But the point is you can't put yourself
(01:24:34):
in position with that's even close, that's even possible that
it's going to be called right, So the Lakers lose
and the finger pointing ensues. Now here's what I've chosen
to do. And I haven't listened all day to everybody
else music. You have Ramos, you have Rich eyes In,
(01:24:57):
Dan Patrick, Collin cow heard, Clay Travis. Have they played
the distracted comment? I know Colin did, um. I think
if Dan Patrick didn't play it, I believe he talked
about it. I'm not sure about Rich Eising, Okay. I
want to make sure that I'm fair. And I saw that.
(01:25:20):
I saw the quote just like anybody, and I was like, oh,
what he's saying. They're distracted. That seems like an excuse.
And then I listened to the question, which was, Hey,
are these guys still distracted? Right? So I want you
to listen to the question. I want you to listen
to the answer. But the question is as important as
(01:25:40):
the answer. Go ahead. The playoff push and the fact
that that's all you mays talking about with twenty five
games to go? Basically has that come a distraction at all?
And it doesn't affect the way have you seen have
you felt like it has affected the way your team
plays on a close situation at this point, if you
are still allowing distractions to affect you how to where
you play, then this is this is the wrong franchise
(01:26:02):
to be a part of, and you should just come
and be like, listen, I don't I can't do this.
Like seriously, you're distracted by playoff pushes and all the
stuff that's been talking about this year, and it's coming
to your job. We do our job at a high level,
and you know that's not that's not it's not a distraction.
That's like, that's what you want, un as you want
every game you want to feel like you're fighting for something.
I know that We're trained to think that Lebron is
(01:26:25):
calling out teammates, and it he has previously this season. Um.
Some are just remarks in which are free flowing. Some
are point remarks to get guys going. Um. But but
that's not one of them. That's actually I'm gonna defend
Lebron James for a second before I kind of crushed
Lebron James. That's Lebron answering the question. And one of
(01:26:49):
the more frustrating things when you get to these mega
stars is you asked them a question and they just
answer however they want to answer right or whatever they
want to answer. And so what I think that he
was doing was he was eliminating any sort of excuse
for why they may be playing poorly, which I like.
(01:27:15):
The guy's like, well it's a playoff push and everything else.
Is that a distraction? And basically le Bron was like,
there's no excuses, we're not making any That wasn't calling
out teammates. That was calling out the question without calling
out the question, without looking at the guy and go
that's a stupid question. He actually did the opposite of that.
(01:27:37):
He engaged with the interviewer in a way in which
he answered the question, and while he dismantled the idea
of the question, he did actually answer the question. So
before we hop on Lebron and say what a horrible
human being he is because they're losing and because he
wanted everybody traded and he probably wants a different head coach,
(01:27:59):
that is not a snapshot in terms of Q and
A of Lebron James being a bad teammate and a
bad guy, not in any way. On the other hand,
he was eight of twenty three and though he had
a triple double, he did miss a good many of
makeable shots. And we're not seeing him take over the
(01:28:19):
way that James Harden took over when his team wasn't healthy,
when his team wasn't playing well. We started the year
thinking Lebron James needs more help to be in order
to be Lebron James. He need shooters, he needs another star,
because that's how Lebron rolls. Is it possible that we
(01:28:39):
overestimated who Lebron James still is at thirty four years old.
I was in denial, just as anybody else, not that
he wouldn't be. Look the things I thought coming into
the year were I thought the West would be a
little bit more competitive, and probably top to bottom it is,
although the top of the East is better than the
top of the West. But but I thought, hey, one
(01:29:02):
of the things we haven't calculated for is his age.
Another thing we haven't calculated for is it's never really
that easy early on. Another thing we haven't calculated for
is what I think they saw last night and against
the Pelicans, which is you get everybody else's best shot.
But I thought we hadn't calculated for those things, and
(01:29:23):
the road would be a little bit more treacherous than
most people thought. I didn't know he get hurt, did
no Alonzo get hurt? Didn't know Kuzmo would be out
a couple of games when Lebron was to give him
no chance, just no scoring. And though I didn't love
their roster, I thought I kind of understood the idea
of the roster, which is, hey, you get a bunch
of competitive older guys going with the younger guys to
(01:29:45):
challenge the younger guys, and they're a year away from
really being competitive at the top. But I watched Lebron move,
and I'm willing to understand that it's harder to come
crackoff of injury, especially as soft tissue injury and a
pulled groin at that, because you never know am I
(01:30:05):
really back or really hurt? But I heard whispers, just
like anybody else. I have colleagues that have said, hey,
Lebron James came here to half retire to be a mogul.
How Cowhard did an entire year on how he's reached
the mogul status, And I was like, yeah, I don't
see that. I feel like Lebron is chasing Mike and
(01:30:29):
he wants to stick the flag in the ground and
he wants to be a Laker. You're a Laker, you're royalty.
You win a tile with the Lakers, and you want
to tiele with the calves and the tattle with the
heat and now you put yourself above all those other guys.
But they said he want to be a mogul. They
said he had different interests. They didn't come here solely
for basketball and not solely for family. That there was
a myriad of reasons and all he's done is lived
(01:30:52):
down to that possible reputation. He said he wasn't chasing
anything anymore. He posted an I g or so did
uh um to change of him helping to change record
some track or an album. You know, the night before
they were gonna play the Golden State Warriors and he
(01:31:14):
was missing the game because of load management. He hasn't
looked engaged with his coach, is engaged with his teammates,
and he hasn't been able to lift them up when
they're struggling to find their way. And we're all trying
to figure out why did the Lakers panic? Right they
(01:31:36):
they had the entire the plan was, it was going
according to plan except for injury. But then all of
a sudden there were stories out where maybe Luke gets
fired and they wanted to make a move to get
Anthony Davis. Why would they want him? He's gonna be
traded this summer? Was it because they were the only
one they not the Celtics should off of the package?
(01:31:58):
Maybe a little bit, or maybe it was Pannock said it.
It felt like panic setting in. Couldn't get Paul George?
Could you get an interview with Paul George last year? Kauai, No, thanks,
k D doesn't want that, Kyrie, they've been together. That's
not happening again. Well, now a sudden, the pool shrinks
(01:32:19):
and it's Anthony Davis or or what else. But is
it possible that the cause for panic was not because
Lebron James needs better teammates he can lift up, but
but instead he needs a teammate that can lift him up. Hey,
I can't carry a franchise anymore. I need help or
(01:32:41):
maybe better off, somebody else can carry this franchise and
I can help. I still think Lebron James, when he's right,
is an amazing player and his body type in the
way in which he plays and playing downhill and the
versatility of it. I mean, he's still a lot of
game left, but he has come out of his prime athletically.
(01:33:06):
He is not the same guy and becoming a jump
shooter no matter how much or post up player, No
matter how much better he is in the post now
than he was previously, no matter how much better he
shoots the ball now than previously, that's not who he
is or what he does. That's never been who he
is or what he does. Lebron James plays downhill. He's
(01:33:26):
the greatest downhill basketball player we've ever seen. It's helped
out by the style of officiating. It's helped out by
taking power forwards out of the game, sometimes putting centers
out by the three point line. But it's also helped
out by the fact that he's six ft two sixty
maybe more pounds, and he's skilled like a guard. And
(01:33:47):
if you're taking away what he does best, this is
the reason that there was a This is an honest
discussion I have. I've been doing radio long enough music
and ramos that there was a time where Carson Palmer
and Mike Vick were both at the peak of their powers.
Mike Vick in Atlanta, Carson Palmer's in Cincinnati, and I
(01:34:07):
said I would rather have Carson Palmer than Mike Vick,
and people shouted from the mountaintops. It's just not really close.
Because what I felt like, and look, there's a myriad
of reasons Vic never again gained the stature of early
in his career was as he got older, the things
he did best, which are scramble around and run the football,
(01:34:33):
the thing that he did best, he would be asked
to do less. Whereas the thing that Carson Palmer did
the best, which was get back there and just throw
a seed to a wide receiver, he could do until
he's forty. Something he would be asked to do more
of the thing Lebron James does best is played downhill,
(01:34:54):
create shots himself and for others in transition and in
the half court. Things he does worst scoring low post
and spot up jump shoot. Guess what you have to
do when you lose your legs. I don't think he's washed,
but I do think that he's just as much part
of the problem as he is part of the solution.
(01:35:15):
All right, coming up next? Uh, I thought last night
was the night Kansas State had a chance to stick
the dagger in the heart of the Kansas Jayhawks and
stop the Big twelve Championship straight. Couldn't do it. How
do you wake up the next day and decide we're
gonna get back after it and try and capture at
least a portion of the Big twelve crown. Bruce Webber
(01:35:36):
took the line Eye to the National Championship game, took
Kansas State to the lead eight. How good is his club?
And what went wrong last night? We'll find out next.

Bob Nightingale, MLB insider for USA Today, joins us in
(01:36:41):
ten minutes with the latest on Bryce Harper on the
how the Nolan Ronado deal came to be. What does
it mean from Mike Trout. Trout's uh, two years out
from a new deal. But Trout is much like Arnado
now Trout already has a big deal. Like. One of
the misconceptions about Mike Trout is, well, he's still underpaid.
(01:37:01):
He actually was the highest paid player, I believe in
baseball last season, as he made over thirty million dollars um.
But you know, he he uh, there was there was
the one mistake that they made. This is going back
to two thurs and thirteen when they decided to renew
his contract and assign him a contract of over only
(01:37:24):
five thousand dollars. They've since tried to remedy that. We'll
see if they're still bad blood, you know, five six
years later. So we got to some baseball here in
ten minutes, let's talk some basketball. Bruce Webbers the head
coach of Kansas State. Last year they went to the
League eight. Essentially everybody back from last year. They have
had some injuries, but generally an outstanding season. Last night
(01:37:46):
they had the chance to stick the dagger into Kansas.
Beat Kansas at home, which has actually been more difficult
for them than beating Kansas on the road. But they
felt a ku and now kind of an uphill fight
to to to win the Big twelve. Bruce Wever joins
us on the Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Coach,
thanks so much for joining us. I'm sure you've watched
the tape. What went wrong? Well, we didn't pass the basketball.
(01:38:11):
I think that's the biggest thing. You know. We you
talked about our injuries. We've had some. You know, when
you're best player, the preseason player that you have been
weighed is he's missed games, He's missed you know, really
almost I would say six weeks of practice. He just
doesn't have that. You know, we play him in games,
but when you don't practice over long stand of time,
(01:38:32):
you don't have the rhythm and that, you know, kind
of the aggressiveness and confidence that you had that you need,
especially from your best guy. And and so you know,
they took him away, they doubled him, and then they
switched a lot of stuff, and then we've roze. I mean,
we just you know, we've early in the year we
didn't pass the ball. I don't think it was selfishness. Uh,
(01:38:53):
it was just more like, you know, I'm gonna go
make a play. And then we've we've slowly, with surely
been able to correct. At the last three weeks, seven
or eight games, we've been top ten in the country
offensive efficiency in that stretch. And then last night we
kind of reverted back to where we were early in
the season where we didn't pass it. And then they
(01:39:15):
they punked us on the boards, you know, forty two rebounds, Uh,
you know, they and I think it was thirteen fifteen
offensive rebounds. And it's just you know, you you know,
and and the crowd is always unbelievable there. It's a
great environment. And and they play well there, they've beating
no one's beating them. They Texas Tech just you know,
(01:39:36):
beat them by thirty at home. About two weeks ago.
They had Texas Tech by twenty four six late in
the game. So obviously they play much better at home.
How do you personally handle it? Right? Because like, look,
Bill is a guy that you replaced at at Illinois.
You took his team, You took you know, that that
same program to a national champs. You game a great
(01:39:57):
game by the way against Carolina, Like it's one of
the best game said, where you guys were ahead of
the curve shooting threes against against the size of a
loaded Carolina club. Um. And then of course now you're
you know, you're playing against him down the road in
Kansas State. Like, personally, how how do you handle the
emotions of Hey, you want your program to be recognized
for how good you are? Yeah, and and we're good.
(01:40:20):
We haven't gotten the publicity, I don't think. But some
of it's our fault. We just haven't. We've had, you know,
some of it's the injuries you can make the excuses
and a little bit inconsistent and and which is disappointing.
I really think, you know, we should be. We could
be and should be a top ten team in the country,
but we you know, between the injuries and that inconsistency,
(01:40:42):
we haven't been able to do it. But last night
was this morning, I thought we really had a champ.
We got veteran guys. The last two years, it's gone
down to the wire there, We've got plays, we've got
called it didn't go our way, and I thought, hey,
we could take it to a nice step, you know,
for our program them and we beat them at home
and and you know, but we just couldn't do it. Now, Hey,
(01:41:05):
it's it's you know, a lot of discussion after game
last a lot of texis where our guys, we gotta
come back. We got three left. Uh, you know, it's
an uphill battle, but it's uphill for everybody. And we've
we gotta get Baylor on Saturday at home. Still a
chance to win the league too, right, I mean that's
the win out, win out you were the league. Now
(01:41:26):
that's easier said than done. Uh, you know, Kansas you
can look at schedules and Texas Tech. You know it's
they got one probably at Iowa State. It's gonna be
a tough game. Iowa State already beat him at at
Texas Tech, but they're playing at a really high level
right now. Kansas is schedule, you know, you look at
(01:41:46):
it like they could they could win every game, and
then Taylor's probably got the toughest schedule. But Scott Drew's
done a great job and they've already surprised some people,
and you can't take them lightly. Yeah, and you guys
got them on Saturday. Can't allow Kansas to beat you twice.
Bruce Webber, the head coach at at Case State, by
the way, kind of selfish plug. If you want to
listen to my All Basketball podcast with his assistant coach
(01:42:10):
Chris Lowry, it's a really good one. You can download
that part of the Herd Podcast network. Bruce is my
guest here on the Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.
It did seem like something changed in your program last year.
You know, there's something I understand the n c A
Tournament to those of us who have played in it,
and you having coached it so many times, like sometimes
(01:42:33):
it's it's artificial. You know, you really didn't have that
good a year, but you had a great finish. But
for your program. Getting the lead eight was exactly what
the doctor or it seemed like you broke You didn't
get to the final four, but it did seem like
you kind of broke through a bit of an invisible ceiling.
Is that is that fair? Oh? Yeah, it was. It
was a nice one for our guys. And then if
you really consider the circumstances, uh, you know, mid season,
(01:42:57):
we lose our starting point guard and he's one of
the you know, one of our leading scorers, top of
this guy in the league, and and we're able to
respond with a freshman point guard, Cardi a Jarra. Uh,
you know, plays unbelievable. And then we get into the
you know, into the Big twelve tournament and we actually
he who was last year in the best league in
the country, maybe the best I've ever been part of, No,
(01:43:19):
not maybe definitely the best league I've ever been part of.
We're really all ten teams should have been in the
tournament or you know, could have easily. And you had
one in the in the uh final four year, three
in the lead eight, and one in the sweets. There
are another one in the sweet sixteen. So uh, you know,
we finished fourths are here. It was it was it was.
It wasn't great, but it was really pretty good in
(01:43:41):
that tough league. And then you know, Dean Wade goes
down in the uh Big twelve Tournament and our guys
respond and you know, everyone, you know, matches are important.
We got a low break not having to play for Virginia,
but uh we did beat great and we did beat Kentucky,
and you know, it was it was a nice run
and a great for our kids especially we got we
(01:44:03):
got a great group of kids and uh, they really care.
They you know, they kind of have come out of
nowhere and they become something and and it's been very
positive for our program for people who don't know doing
Dean Wades had this reoccurring foot problem. Is he is
he playing through injury like it would seem that he's not. Yeah,
(01:44:23):
he's not the same and and he just uh, you know,
he tore attendant in his foot um the first week
at December after last year, having a stress fracture in
his foot in the Big twelve tournament and you know,
he was out about six weeks. We got him back, Uh,
you know, it looked like we were fine, and then uh,
(01:44:45):
a couple of weeks ago after the Texas game, he
complained of some pain. Obviously, we were you know, you
know this about his futures, so we were written soon
uh found a soft tissue damnage to joint sprain uh
in his but uh and that's kind of lingered, and
we've had to really rest them and and it doesn't
help to play Saturday Monday. But you know, we just
(01:45:09):
gotta fight through it. And you know, we're hoping, you know,
we can get through next weekend. Maybe you know, we'll
get him back in practice a little bit before we
get into the Big Twelve Tournament and the n c
A Tournament, get him in a little bit of a rhythm,
and and you know, I just want him to have
a great finish to his career. Well, listen, it's been
fun to watch your team play. You got this three
(01:45:30):
game finishing kick, a chance to win the Big twelve
title outright. Wish you nothing but the best of luck
and safe travels along your path to Kansas City and
then to the n c A Tournament. Appreciate you join
us on Fox Sports Radio. Appreciate it. You were you're
at one of our games. Yeah, I was down hanging
out with your guys. You. You're in, You're in. You're
in your zone, and I didn't want to screw up
(01:45:51):
in your zone. I heard you had popped in because
something said I was on the plate with Duck. So
you know, I'm sorry I didn't get the visit. But
hopefully we'll see down the road. All right, we'll see
what we'll see as soon as Bruce Webber head coach
at Kansas State. And when you do those radio games,
sometimes you know, you get there and uh, I'm trying
(01:46:12):
to think Manhattan. We did the show from Remind me music,
I did the show from Manhattan. Yeah, little studio outside
of Manhattan, right. Oh, no, what did we not do
it that day? No? I know what I did that day.
I did Dan Patrick in Chicago and then I flew him.
There's a NonStop from Chicago to Manhattan. I landed it
(01:46:34):
was like three thirty, and I was, you know, like,
you know Dan Patrick show, there's eight o'clock was eight
to eleven. I went right to the airport and I
got there and I went and took a quick nap,
and then I went to the arena and then you know,
he's in his They have this unbelievable practicability, beautiful locker room,
and so I got to talk to the assistance. Then
he gets to like it's an hour before the game.
You're like, should I go in and say hi? Like? Ah, anyway,
(01:46:58):
I don't know if you guys know the story, the
Bruce Webber story. I guess I'll tell it real quick.
My dad's favorite player you ever coach was not me.
It was Bruce's brother, Dave at you two MI Milwaukee.
Probably should add Bruce tell the story, huh. Anyway, Um, anyway,
So Bruce was my dad's manager, which is like grad
(01:47:18):
assistant whenever, like manager at you to Milwaukee, and then uh,
Gene Katie got the head coaching job at Western Kentucky.
Gene Katie had been Eddie Sutton's assistant at Arkansas. My
dad had been Eddie Sutton's assistant at Creighton. So they're
kind of insane basketball family. And Bruce was ready for
a real job. The depick of the phone called say,
(01:47:40):
I got a great young coach for you. Bruce went
down there. He was Jen Kays assistant at Western Kentucky
and then longtime assistant at Perdue, then was the head
coach at Southern Illinois. Then Illinois, now Kansas State. There
you go. Let's get to Isaac Loewen Kan who has
never been an assistant to anybody the boss, right your Doug.
(01:48:01):
The NFL today has suspended Dallas Cowboys pass rushing defensive
end Randy Gregory indefinitely for violating the policy and Program
for substances of abuse and the terms of his conditional reinstatement.
How tiresome are gregory suspensions getting for the Cowboys? Well,
The headline and the Cowboys Own official website reads quote,
(01:48:26):
Randy Gregory has now been suspended yet again by the
NFL for the fourth time, unquote at the headline on
the Cowboys own website. In baseball, multiple outlets report that
the Colorado Rockies are finalizing an eight year, two hundred
sixty million dollar extension with third baseman Nolan Erinado, with
(01:48:46):
an opt out clause after the third season and a
no trade clause. Mlb dot Com reports pitcher Miles Michael
has has agreed to a four year, sixty eight million
dollar extension with the St. Louis Cardinals through three. Finally,
in college basketball, yesterday, Yahoo Sports reported that Arizona head
coach Sean Miller and l s U head coach Will
(01:49:08):
Wade will be subpoenaed for the federal basketball corruption trial
that is said to begin in April. Well today, ABC
fifteen reporter Mike Pelton drove from Phoenix to Tucson to
ask Miller about it at his weekly press conference, and
here was Miller's response, No comment, you can drive back
(01:49:29):
to Phoenix. Yikes, no word yet. Have Bill Belichick plans
to borrow that phrase next season as well? No comment?
You can drive back to marble head back to the
Dug gott Leap show in ten seconds. But first a
word from Farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know a roof
can withstand a lot, one exception being an airborne car
(01:49:51):
seen it covered it dr Farmers Farmers Farmers Struck Fire
Insurance Exchange, then affiliates products not available every state. Was
really cool of Bruce weber Toy like, like a lot
of coaches you lose, they don't come on the next day.
We had him pre booked and then he was like,
like they punked us on the boards and we had
passed the ball. Well, like I just got a matter
of fact, I mean not that, I mean that's that
(01:50:11):
doesn't usually happen as an easy happen, Um, but awesome
of him to come on. Same with Bob Nightingale, who,
on short notice, uh, was kind enough to pick up
the phone we called MLB insider for USA today. That's
because what's normally the hot stove Leagues suddenly is now
part of spring training baseball. Bob, this is a weird year,
(01:50:32):
weird year. Uh. First, let me just go back to
last week. What was your reaction to Manny Machado in
San Diego. Well, we've been surprised about a month ago,
you know, and then they jumped in at two or
eighty million dollars. You didn't he weren't playing games, so
then they came a two team race between them and
the White Sox, and just strictly, o't better everybody white
(01:50:55):
size by fifty million dollars. Certainly the Potteries were not
his first choice by anything, being so far away from
Islam in Miami. But you know, I do one like that,
and you know you came years became a no brain decision. Um,
I guess, I guess. My question is, like, of all
the guys, to give a ten year deal to Manny
(01:51:18):
Machado seems as risky as anybody who's not a picture
and then in a place like San Diego, where you
know you're gonna enjoy yourself because it's the arguably the
greatest city on the face of this earth, and they
haven't been competitive, and I know that there are always
a year away from being in a year away, and
I've heard all the things about their pharm system, and
(01:51:38):
I want to buy it. I just I don't know
how if you if a guy who showed he would
not give as much effort as you'd like in the
biggest game in baseball, what's he going to give you
in San Diego if you don't have a competitive team
around him. Well, that's the question. I mean, twenty six
years old and he plays a time, you know, I
want to say, plays her fifty such a two games
(01:52:00):
every single year. So he's there, I mean, he plays.
But yeah, that's the one worried too, is that the
team's you know, not competitive, chifularly for the first couple
of years he's there, you know, not strong veteran influence there.
You know, you don't have a guy like Adam Jones
or j. J. Hardy or Chase Utley, you know, landing
on you uh you know, you kind of wonder for
lack of days of call uh shitty, very very hill City,
(01:52:24):
so you wonder if they'll have some effects. But you know,
I do believe once they start playing good baseball and
everything else, and then that whenever that year comes, you'll
see a very productive player and you know, one of
the top young players in all in baseball. Bob and
I can go USA today joining US. Okay, So then
we're waiting on Bryce Harper and everyone assumed at some
(01:52:45):
point of the Philadelphia because their owner comes out and
says they're gonna spend stupid money. And then there's rumors
of them getting close. And then then noldan Arnado thing
happens earlier today to eight five and extension, and you know, like, look,
we're in Los Angeles long rumors that he ends up
in either an angel or a Dodger to come back home.
Do you think that's would change the Dodgers going back
(01:53:07):
after Harper or do you think they were always in
there with a shorter term, bigger money deal. I think
always in their short term. You know the fact that
he's still out that so you know what that's TV's
willing to go short term, leutst go talk to him.
But I think they're not know. I mean, I think
the Dodgers knew he was staying. Uh, Yankees do that too.
The owner, you know, Charlie Moronford came out early on
(01:53:29):
in February. He said, we're the almost the fish line here.
We're going to get this done. So I think he's
so comfortable there that teams cannot count on him coming out,
just like Mike Trout miss very comfortable in Orange County.
I think give would be shocked and he left. Uh,
the Angels just because the comfort level. Do you think
that this causes the Angels though? But there's still two
(01:53:49):
years away. But if you're the Angels, you go in
now and go like, all right, here's the check. You
figure which it is. Yeah, I mean you know what
the Angels are they thinking, Okay, we got we'll see
what Harper comes in at. We saw what Arnado is.
Then you go over all that. So you know, if
you're you know, the the Angels, you know you're starting
(01:54:10):
at three fifty, but you know probably you know reality,
you're probably starting at around four million. Uh, you know
for you know, nine ten years. So what is what
is the difference in what you've heard Bob Nutton gie
us to today? What is the difference you've heard in
the terms of the Dodgers and the reported terms of
the Phillies as of now? Well, I think if Harper
(01:54:34):
went to Dodgers, who's gonna leave a good hardt fifty
million dollars and more on the table? I can't see
him doing that. I think you'd be embarrassing to him
since it turned on three million from the Nationals. Uh.
The humiliating for the agent, Scott boris you know that
to take a short term deal when you number one
that granted he liked Dodgers probably Yankees are probably his
(01:54:55):
number one choice, Dodgers number two. It took you, being
close to home, a little tough to leave that kind
of money on the table. Uh. You know for him
to pivot and do that, you know, it's be a
you know, a desperation move. Yeah. But couldn't he couldn't
he in his own mind, if he gets an early
opt out clause put himself right back on the market
and capitalize in the market that we all think it's
(01:55:16):
gonna level off, and it it still hasn't. Well, it could,
but there's you know, no guarantee. You know. Then the
the other part of it is like, well, is he
afraid of playing in Philadelphia? You know which you're you know,
citty with an edge, you know, a passionate band base
who want expectation everything else. I mean, you win there,
you know, you're a hero forever. The one thing about
the Dodgers is and the Dodgers have won six straight divisions,
(01:55:40):
you know, two straight nationally pennants to lead the role
in the tenants every single year. So what are you
gonna add? You know, maybe a game or two. So
it's not like he can come there and say, hey,
I got the Dodgers the World Series. Well, they already
on the brink of it anyway, they've been in the
last two years. You know, if you win it, fine,
but just not that big of a difference. No, it's
(01:56:00):
it's fascinating. Um, there's still a group of unsigned players.
I think. I think Jeff Passon wrote a piece where
it's like, hey, it's not a hundred, it's more fifty,
and now we're we're creeping down. Um what about those
those quickly forgotten unsigned veteran players. What ultimately becomes of them? Yeah,
(01:56:21):
we're only talking about fifteen players now, you know, or
so you know at some point, you know, Dallas Cackle
is gonna be design Okay, I mean not giving a
five to take a three year deal. Greenbo wanted six
years in a hundred. Maybe it takes a year or two.
And here's the market again. Uh. You know some very guys,
uh you know, Adam Jones maybe said of a two
year deal. He hasn't taken a one year deal. So
(01:56:43):
some guys are just gonna have to back down from
what they wanted. And I hope the market changes next year.
But you know, if either take the money that's there
or sit out, and nobody's gonna sit out. No, they're
not gonna sit out. And it stands the reason that
this is the market, right. No middle class? Uh, no
middle classes. We saw some of the veterans get pinched
last year and now some of these you know, mid level,
(01:57:05):
big money guys getting pinched this year. Bob, great stuff.
It's a fascinating time in baseball. Can't wait to see
where Harper goes and how it affects the landscape. Thanks
so much for joining us. All right, It's Bob Nightingale
from US today covering Major League Baseball. The Cowboys want
to make Dak Prescott their quarterback for a long, long time.
We'll share with you the details. Next that Farmers Insurance.

great paint job. Coming to Mako today and get your

Anderson tomorrow, Matt Miller tomorrow, and Rick Buker tomorrow. We

odd couple. Great group of shows this afternoon this evening,
depending on where you're listening to Fox Sports TRADEO, let's
get you caught up. Here's Isaac Lowan Kron and the Press.
(01:58:13):
The Press, Doug Busy Cowboys Centric day today. Their quarterback
Dak Prescott currently set to become a free agent after
the upcoming season. Today, Cowboys chief operating officer Steven Jones
told the Fort Worth Start Telegram about a potential extension
for Dak quote, I just think it's the right time
(01:58:35):
to look at it. He's in the last year of
his contract. We've always said we would like to look
at players, especially guys we think have long term futures
with us, and we are sure of that. And the
last year of your contract you would like to extend.
It makes sense. We will have to see go to
work and see what happens. Unquote. Look, I think all
of that makes sense to just the question is what
(01:58:55):
is the bottom line? Like, I don't think he's a
top five, top ten quarterback, and I don't think you're
hey him as such, even if you've been playing him
below market value for the for the first three years
of his deal. That that's my personal belief. But you
know that in generally what happens is we overpay guys,
we don't underpay them. Meanwhile, Ian Rapp report reporting that
(01:59:16):
Cincinnati Bengal receiver John Ross is being shopped for a
trade by the Bengals after just two seasons. Remember he
had that incredible forty time at the Combine a couple
of years ago and wound up being the ninth overall
pick in the seventeen draft. But now Rapp Report reports
they're actively shopping him. He's not a good wide receiver.
(01:59:38):
It didn't like, you know, but look there's a new
regime there with new head coach. But I mean the
big thing is he's just not a good wide receiver.
He he's a He's a combined freak, that's what he is.
Yesterday and extremely rare Tom Brady Rookie card was sold
at auction for four hundred thousand, one hundred dollar. There
(02:00:00):
were only one hundred copies of the Brady two thousand
Playoff Contenders Championship Ticket collection ever produced. The company that
auctioned it off, an outfit called p w c C Marketplace,
said that the Brady card was quote the highest quality
specimen unquote that it has ever brokered unquote. P WCC
(02:00:25):
needs to get out a little bit more anyway. No
word yet on who purchased the card, but it's been confirmed.
They've got a lot of explaining to do to their wife. Yeah,
I'm really uncomfortable with the highest possible specimen as a
former card collector, UH way way way way way way
way back in the day. I understand why the express
(02:00:46):
what what what they're getting at, but the way in
which they're getting at it makes me really uncomfortable. I
had a Jose Conseco rookie card back in the day,
a Brett Hall Hockey rookie card back in the day.
But it just seems like hard collecting these days aren't
as big, isn't as big as it was back then.
How about you know it's that's not it's not big
at all. Um, it's just not. I mean, kids still
(02:01:08):
like cards, but they don't trade him as much. And
I think part of it was, like our generation, we
purchased so many of them that we also watered down
the value. Also, the adults got involved. Once adults started
collecting cards, you're like today. At the Competition Committee meetings,
giants cowner John Mara said that he did not sense
(02:01:29):
a lot of support for making changes to instant replay.
He just said that the votes are not there. You're
gonna need twenty four votes to make any significant changes
to instant replay. He said, to think that we're going
to be a system where calls are always going to
be corrected from New York or from upstairs. I just
don't think we're there or even close to being there, unquote.
(02:01:50):
It's I tend to agree with him, you know, I
just I tend to agree with them that this that
we have this idea in our head that you know, automatically,
automatically it fixes everything. There's just a there's a law
of unintended consequences. So what happens when you go back
and you see another penalty that you didn't call? Can
(02:02:13):
you change that and fix that too? Of course you can't. So,
and there's the slowing down of the games. There's the
how does how does the guy ever make a call
if he's gonna be proven wrong? If it's an opinion call,
I just I we have If this is like the
n c A, we have a really really good system.
Is a perfect Absolutely not. They're gonna make mistakes and
some are gonna affect games, But our pursuit of perfection
(02:02:35):
at some point has to have a limit. Get out
there and pressed the press. Yeah, the Lebron thing is
fascinating because you know there's gonna be a point where
he's not close to the best player in the NBA.
Are we willing to give him a bit of a
pass now because he's still coming off of entry. Yeah,
(02:02:56):
but we also need to point out, like, dude, play
the eighty two games played the playoffs. Remember, part of
the philosophy of the Pacers last year in the playoffs
was let's make Lebron beat us. Remember all the points
he has because they weren't how they making And he did,
but he kind of limped to the finish, and then
he had a limp to the finish to beat the
Boston Celtics, and then a limp to the end of
(02:03:16):
the Warriors series. And now he's coming back off injury.
So there's a lot of tread worn off the tires
he is coming off injury. But I didn't think he
was the best player in the game two years ago,
when Durant was better than in the finals and the
two teams were fairly equal. Now you look at it
and you go, well, I don't think he's better than Durant.
(02:03:38):
I don't think he's better than Janice. I don't think
he's better than Harden. Can he be in one game? Yeah,
because he's still Lebron James. Can he be over eighty
two of the playoffs. No listen, not got live Show
straighton Vegas is next on Fox Sports Radio.
