(00:42):
you know. Um, I was thinking about who Zion Williamson is.
All right, everybody wants him to be a former player,
Roddy Rogers, Charles Barkley or current player more athletic Draymond Green,
maybe of a Larry Johnson. Roam mush of all of
you can mush them all together, mush like like when
(01:04):
you have plato, you know, and you have red plato
and orange plato and green plato and brown plato, and
you mush it all together and then you have kind
of some multicolored Plato. That's what he would be. But
that's not what I was thinking of for Zion Williamson.
Zion Williamson is single handedly accomplishing two things all at once.
(01:24):
I am not a duke hater. I'm not um. What
happens in my sport that I have covered for sixteen years,
and it's happened since the first day I walked in
over at the old place is look. I walked in
and it was covered that the number one guy has
been dick butt. Oh, let me tell you about like
(01:46):
Chevski and boy Williams and tom Is. Oh, oh, that's super.
Let's sit the leg sensational the the percentage of commentary
that is overwhelmingly positive as opposed to any sort of
negative is like tend to one used to be twenty one.
(02:08):
And I don't even think of commentary being or analysis
being negative. But sometimes when you truly analyze something, you go, hey,
that wasn't as good as it should be. This guy
needs to be better. This coach did made a mistake.
Coach to make mistakes, players make mistakes. These things happen.
So because I feel like I play it right down
(02:30):
in the middle. Sometimes I've been cast in the negative light,
but I'm not a Duke hater. I've always been a
Duke realist. I grew up a Duke fan. Bobby Hurley
was my favorite player. I watched them when both of
their national championship games. First one I watched in Vegas
as they took down you and LV then beat Kansas
(02:50):
on a Monday night. Second, want to watch in person.
Last time we were in the Twin Cities and they
went back to back national titles. It was the slammed
Phone game. I'll tell you about the slam Phone Game
a little bit later. But um, I do think that
(03:11):
much like in college football, we have a tendency to
celebrate when Notre Dame loses their first game, we have
a tendency to celebrate when Duke losing the n C
A treum for whatever reason, the attention that they have
gotten throughout the regular season, because of their coach, because
of their Jim, because of their history, and because of
(03:32):
the players that they have. When they lose, people generally celebrate,
and Duke is seen as at least slightly, if not
more than mildly unlikable and Zion Williamson completely changes that.
You're like, I don't love Duke, but I love that
Diane Williamson. He just so good and nice and plays
(03:55):
hard and he's a kid and he smiles and he
doesn't trip anybody. A matter of fact, he was tripped.
He plays hard, and he he likes his teammates. What
the hell I find myself rooting for Duke. The same
is actually true for college basketball. Not that you root
against college basketball, but I do get the sense that
(04:18):
most of us have. And look, ESPN has kind of
done this this to themselves. They were so invested in
college basketball early on, they really built up the sport,
and now they've become a huge part of destroying the
sport because they put the NBA on in competition on
the Saturday night used to be a college basketball night.
(04:38):
I know it's part of the new TV agreement, is
a genius to it. But you watch the two next
to each other and you're like, and the NBA guys
are a lot better, but Zion Williamson is the one
guy Like, I don't want to watch college basketball as
it was Zion's on. Well, hell, that's like in pulp
fiction when you're calling in the wolf that's all you
got to say. Zi ends on. You know, he's like,
(05:04):
he's he's like the he's like the new boyfriend of
your ex. Right, the new boy Zion Williamson is the
new boyfriend of your ex. Stick with me for a second. Right,
she dumped you, and you thought, hey, I'm a catch.
(05:27):
You wanted to have some sort of dysfunctional You wanted
to either wanted her to be with an ugly dude
so that you were the good looking ex boyfriend, or
with a guy who didn't get her, didn't treat her right,
so that she always knew you were better. You were
better at nine and during the day and better look
(05:48):
at and you meet the guy, you know, you go
to a wedding. You go to a wedding and it's
a mutual friend and you show up and you're still single,
and here you meet the guy. You're like, man, I
want to kick this dude's there? Here he is, he's
with my girl, Like I wanna I want to he's
you know, and if you have kids, like he's he's
(06:09):
not dad to the kids, but he's Jim, Jim so nice.
And you're like, man, I want to find some skeletons.
Turns out like he donates money and it's time. He
used to be in the Peace Corps, right, like he
his dad's like an army hero. He's just nice. He
(06:30):
says yes ma'am and yes sir. He goes to church
every Sunday. He opens the door for her. He buys
her like nice, reasonable things, not over that gives her space.
But then is there for her, you know. Then and
he's like financially successful, like somehow you just had this
thing invention in his mind, got it pad Like he's
(06:52):
worth like fifty million dollars, Like your favorite place to
vacation with her was Cobo. Turns out he's got as Incabo.
You know that range over she always wanted. She's got one.
Now he takes care of it. He pumps her gas.
I hate that, but I I'd really kind of like
to be dating that guy. That's who Zion is. He's
(07:16):
the new boyfriend of your ex who you wanna hate
you so badly want to find little things to pick apart.
He's like, well he's jump shots, doot. It's actually better
than I thought. Well, maybe he doesn't play he actually
plays really hard. Maybe he's super selfish, right, selfish maybe
he'll sit out when he tweaks his name. Nope, actually
(07:37):
wants to play for his teammates. Well, maybe when he plays,
he won't play with reckless abandoned because he's trying to
protect the asset as he's the number one overall pick
and he's gonna make millions in all this and Nope, Nope.
Maybe he'll say something dumb when you play put a
microphone in the front of his face. Nope, he says
the right thing every time. All here dirt can because
(07:59):
he's so per effect. Did you have to pick Duke? Right?
Picked some other level? But like he almost went to Clemson, now, right,
that would have been Clemson. You know, picked somebody else?
Pick up? Pick Butler? Who doesn't No one doesn't like Butler.
(08:19):
I like pick Butler. Did you have to pick Duke?
Duke is a villain and trip guys, Christian Lightner, Stefan guys.
You know Saint just sank Tschowski, you know, dog cusses
the officials and nobody knows or when they're playing Wisconsin
at the half of the National Championhip game, he goes
on national TV calls out the refs and then all
(08:41):
of a sudden they get every call right, like, did
you really have to pick Duke? Because now I find
myself going, you know, I'd really like to see Duke
play in the final four, and I kind of want
him to win. Telling you the Zion character, I gotta
keep an eye on that one. Too perfect, too nice, place,
too hard, place, the right way, place for his teammates,
(09:04):
and he plays for Duke. Something is off, something is amiss,
because I find myself I find myself with that, like
I almost I'm going to Dick Vital and going, hey, Ki,
borrow your Duke pomp pomp from every time you do
the game. I would like to borrow that and shake it.
When I watched them play this weekend, Zi Williamson accomplishing
(09:24):
what had previously been uh an uncommable, unclammable mountain, an
impenetrable fortress of hate, of hate rade, which is nobody
likes Duke, especially this time of year. Think about when
they lost a Mercer and Mercer's out dancing on mid court.
You're like, man, I love Mercer. They lost a VCU,
(09:45):
You're like, man, I love VCU. Now you're like, please, God,
don't let anything happen to Duke. I want to see
Zi Willimson play six more games? Please please please? Uh.
Hell has frozen over, pigs are starting to fly, and
(10:06):

Pat forty from Yahoo Sports joins US no outrage this year.
Maybe it's because I wasn't on the show and I
couldn't stir anything up, But I mean I was, I
(12:32):
was trying, But there's nothing I'm really that fired up about, right, Like,
you know, why do you think that is? Because I
think the committee did a pretty good job, you know,
I think it was it was kind of cut and
drive to a lot of extent. I thought, I mean,
the top eight were the top eight, and it was
just gonna be a matter of who's ones and whose twos.
(12:53):
You know. I do feel badly for Michigan State and
Dupe being in the same region because I thought that
they deserve better than to have to play each other
to go to the final four. Um, and I don't
like Kansas getting a chance to play in Kansas City.
And I probably would have liked to have seen the
so Cans second SoCon team or a lipscum make the
(13:16):
field instead of a you know, a Temple or a
Arizona State or somebody like that. Yeah, or or St.
John's I'm I'm with you on all of those. I
would only, you know, the counter would be like, I'm
actually more bothered that Michigan State has to play on
a Thursday. Right. That was that was a war that
they had to play. Now they got to around play
on a Thursday. I don't like that you played the
last game. You shouldn't. You shouldn't play in the first day. Um.
(13:38):
You know the counter to kick Kansas is they just
lost in Kansas City, so obviously not that big an
advantage um for for the Jayhawks, even if you know,
proximity will make it a prohibitive home court if they
could even get that far. But yeah, they're there. What's
interesting about the Kansas thing and interesting about is I
hate when, for example, they said, well we had contingency plans.
(14:02):
If Tennessee won the SEC championship, they would have been
a number one seed. Well, why didn't you have a
contingency plan if Michigan State won the Big Ten championship?
And oh yeah, by the way, if you had the
brackets done so early, couldn't you find tooth combedom and said, hey, guys,
you know we got Kansas plan in Kansas City. Can
we make an adjustment to that? Yeah? Sure, I mean
(14:23):
that's the thing, you know, I think that. I mean,
it's never gonna be perfect, but there were some things
that could have done that probably could have buttoned it
up a little bit more and left them a little
less open for second guessing. But you know, on the
whole of your your original point, you know, I don't
think there's a lot of egregious stuff out there. So
kudos to the committee because I thought it was a
really hard year to do it. Who made made easier
(14:46):
by some of those bids that were stolen, right they did, no,
no doubt about it, no doubt about it there, you know,
Oregon coming in and getting a bid and a couple
other people late there, I think did make it easier
for them. Um On the other hand, uh, you know,
I thought they you know, they handled an L s
U conundrum pretty well, um, I thought that. Uh, you know,
(15:10):
and again I was pleased to see Belmont get a
shot in there. So you know, some of the issues
that I was anticipating, uh didn't didn't really materialize. Doug
gotlip show Fox Sports Radio. That's the voice of Pat Forty,
who joins us. This weird thing happening across America. People
are rooting for Duke because of Zion Williamson. I I
(15:32):
equated it to finding yourself really enjoying the company of
your ex's new boyfriend or new husband. Right, That's that's
what it is. You want to hate the guy, but
you just can't. Yeah. No, I mean, he has so
much fun to watch, and he is a likable person.
I've interviewed him, I don't know, like three times, and
he's he's just a sweetheart of a guy. He's got
(15:52):
a great personality. Uh. You watch him on the court.
He gives tremendous, honest effort. He's you know, generous with
his teammates and not only with the ball, but being
excited for him. Uh. You know, there's nothing about him
not to like and enjoy watching as far as I'm concerned.
You know, if you if you can't get past the
uniform and and and at least enjoy watching him play.
(16:15):
Then then I think he got a problem. Yeah, I
would agree, but it is. It is a weird thing
for so many college basketball fans who are just gonna
sit there with the rosary beach normally and root for
them to lose. And now you you've realized, like, I
don't I want to keep. I want to I want
to watch watch him play. Um, okay, who do you
think ultimately? You know, like I feel like five six teams? Um,
(16:37):
five six teams. I mean, if you stretch it out
with Michigan and Michigan State, maybe maybe the eight teams.
But I kind of feel like we know who the good,
the best teams are, we know who everybody else is fair,
I think, so, you know, I mean that's usually I
try to find, you know, a three seed of four seed,
somebody to to put past the top two lines, and
I think it's hard. I mean, I kind of like
(16:59):
Texas Tech, but now I'm scared about the way they
finished the Big ten uh tournament or a big big
twelve tournament. I'm sorry. Um, So you know, I I
look at the top eight and I think the champion
is definitely gonna come from that group. Um, you know,
Duke Carolina, Kentucky, Gonzaga, Tennessee, Virginia. The one interesting thing
(17:21):
to me, Doug, is the one reason of the South
region which will come here to Louisville. Somebody's I think,
going to the final four for the first time in
a long time, because unless the lower seed breaks through,
I mean Tennessee's never been, Virginia hadn't Vincince at four,
Purdue hadn't vin since eighty uh So, somebody's gonna have
a breakthrough. I think Virginia and Tennessee can both say hey,
I kind of like our draw. Here s Doug gotlive
(17:43):
show here on Fox Sports Trader. That's the voice of
Pat forty. All right, let's let's get do what's really
interesting this time of year, which is who's gonna be
the coach at u C l A. Boy, I don't
know that it is interesting, and I don't know what
they do. You know, I really have enough. I'll admit
I haven't had my ear to the ground on that
much because we've been doing so much investigation stuff with
(18:06):
the with the scandal. But you know, is it a
is it A does Luke Walton seek refugee status from
the NBA. Eric Musselman's name is out there. There's not
a natural slam dunk kind of fit. I don't think
you know, it's not There's not somebody just sitting there
and go, oh yeah, that's the logical U c l
A coach. So there might need to be some creativity.
(18:26):
I've heard some people throw around Kelvin Sampson's name. Uh,
you know, I don't know what the heck they're gonna do.
I don't either. Um, the Musselman thing, I mean, you know,
obviously he's got the lineage, and he's actually been a
great college coach and you know, proven he can do
it with lesser resources. Um, there was some extracurricular back
when he was in the NBA, but that was years ago,
(18:47):
and I just don't know if you see it, like
can get over that. On the other hand, you know,
there's Taco Patino, and if you can get over Patino stuff,
heck you get over stuff a decade over from from
from Musselman. It is weird though, that it's you know,
name wise, one of the five greatest was in college basketball,
but here it is sitting open for half the year
and it just feels like there's a lack of any
sort of knowledge or maybe buzz as to where they're going. Yeah,
(19:10):
it is strange, you know, And I don't know whether
the job is now considered damaged goods or people are
scared of it or what the situation is. But you know,
usually you'd have a congo line of very proven, impressive
coaches who would like to get in on something like that.
So you know, maybe Dan Garrel is just holding his
cards very close to his chest and knows what he
(19:30):
wants to do. Maybe he's waiting for somebody to be
done with a season, whether it's in the NBA or
whether it's in college. But there's not a lot getting
out about what's going on there. I'll tell you the
latest rumor in l A is John Calipari. Is there
is there a born on date? Is there a time
in which you have to like, you know, what you
gotta you just you gotta try something new? Like how
(19:51):
many how many Top five recruits can you get? How
many one and dones can you deal? How many times
can you be in Kentucky? Is there ever a moment
where you go like, you know, maybe it doesn't that
that marriage doesn't go the distance. Yeah, sure, I mean
maybe the past history indicates that that it's like Notre
Dame football, so burnout job You don't have other than
Adolf Rupp, who was almost literally prehistoric at least in
(20:14):
terms of integration of the game. Uh, you don't have
people that stay there for twenty years, you know, Joe
Joby Hall retired early, Eddie Sutton was run out by scandal.
Rick Pettino hit the ejection button to go to the NBA.
Tubby Smith, who was kind of that worn out marriage thing.
Calipari while he's one a ton, I do know this.
(20:34):
He's getting paid nine point three million dollars this year.
They haven't been to the final force them one. It's
and a lot of people are saying, why does Duke
have all the players we used to get? So, I mean,
is there a little bit of at least restless natives? Yeah,
I would say so. And maybe he's looking around saying,
I don't have to have this. I could go coach elsewhere.
I don't know. Richard Pettino is a former Louisville assistant.
(20:57):
Rick Pettino is a former Louisville head coach. And having
we've all gone through the process. So we'll just assume
that it just happened that Minnesota is playing Louisville. But
that's the that's that and the uh what Marquette versus
Murray State are the two that just happened to happen
that we love that they just happened to happen, right, Yes, yes,
(21:19):
And you know, if you want to get a little
further down the line, possibly Bobby Hurley playing Natotes, But
that's that's far less hu see than Patino family versus Louisville.
You know that one I said, this is uh Richard
Patino in uh al Pacino's role in The Godfather as
(21:39):
Michael Corleone, and he can come in and say today
I settled all family business. If he takes out Louisville here,
uh and Don Corleone cannot in approval. But there's no
doubt that that's going to bring a little bit of
extra use to that game. I don't think there's I
don't think there's any question. Are you going to a site,
are you going to Vegas? Are you going to the couch?
What are you doing? I'm going to be like monitoring
(22:02):
from actually from the n C Double A Women's Swimming
Championships Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and then yeah, watching Stanford and
then after that I'll be somewhere Saturday Sunday. Now, your
daughter's a legit swimmer. You're not one of these people
that paid five hundred grands that your daughter would get
in on a swimming deal, right, I promise, First of all,
I don't have five. Secondly, you just watch her. Yeah, no, no,
(22:23):
I I've seen all of the tweets from the various
swim meets. I just didn't know if you had somebody
else take them and put them on your account, you know,
so that you could you could get in under the
little bit under the under the under the wire without
anybody noticing. Again, not rich enough and I guess not
devious enough either. What do you do with with L
s U? Right? Like there was the weird Will Wade
(22:44):
statement that he wants to coach yet he hasn't he
won't talk with his but he's doing basically what Bruce
Pearl did. Well, he's like, I'm not gonna talk to
I ain't talking about president about what might or might
not have happened. Like that's a I actually kind of
like Yale in the game, Tony Bedford is gonna coach.
But what are your thoughts on the Yale on the
(23:04):
on the l s U thing. Oh, it's it's crazy,
it's weird, you know. And it is similar to pearl stance,
but Wade has caught a lot more red handed, I
would say than Pearl was. You know Pearl. It was like,
my assistance are involved here. This is Will Wade, you
know on FBI transcripts saying you know about a strong
(23:24):
ass offer. So that's something that has to be explained
and has to be explained directly by him. I don't
think you can sit back and say I'm not going
to talk to you. And boy, there were some interesting
comments from an associate a d from l s U
and explaining the situation that basically, I mean, this was
not a a a university that's lining up behind Will Wade.
(23:45):
It was like, yeah, you know what, he's got to
talk to us. He may have violated the law, he
may have broken into double A rules. That's the deal. Uh,
And so you know they're gonna go forward without him
in this tournament. They have a ton of talent. Nas
Read is a monster. Tremont water is a very good guard.
They've got good players, but a runnerless ship. It looked
like a little bit too in the SEC tournament. Yeah yeah, No,
(24:08):
I mean that they have really really good, really good players.
Is is how is how basketball people would say, got
really really really good players? Um, this is? This does
feel different than the Sean Miller thing. Obviously your site
is reporting Pat forty from Yahoo Sports joining us on
the Doug Gallup Show. You guys are reporting in this
(24:29):
as opposed to ESPN reporting last year on the Sean
Miller thing. Why is it different? Well, I mean, I
don't know. I don't know what went into ESPN is
reporting on that, but you know, we we reported the
what we had and uh, you know, I it lays
it out pretty specifically. It's just it's there's not a
(24:51):
lot of window room there. Uh you know, you don't
have to be a rocket scientists to figure out what
they were talking about. And I just don't know how
how do you explain it any other way than what
everybody thinks it was? I don't think so either. Fascinating
fastening stuff. Uh, last thing, who do you have within it?
(25:12):
I've got to um. When Zion came back and played
like he did, and they played like they did if
the uh ACC tournament. That answered my questions. I liked
them all along. I liked them. I was there when
they destroyed Kentucky the first game. I liked them all
season when they got their guys on the court. I
think they're the best team, all right. I saw the
Kentucky one. I actually have Kentucky winning it. I do
(25:32):
think they've improved. I'm a little cautious of Duke's lack
of of scoring depth, but I think they'll get there,
and I'm I'm fast today to see how it how
it plays out. Pat, enjoy swimming, Good luck to your daughter,
and can't wait to read your commentary leading up to
and covering the n c A tournament. Thanks so much.
That's Pat Forde who Sports does a great job to
(25:53):
get you to Dan Buyer, who did his own bracket
preview show yesterday on Fox Sports Trade. Did he be
what he got? We had fun time yesterday. We were
smacked out in the middle of it all preview, the brackets,
got the brackets, reacted to the brackets, all in a
span of three hours. NFL though taking the headlines today
New York Giants general manager Dave Gettleman on a conference call,
(26:16):
speaking publicly for the first time since the team traded
wide receiver Odell Beckham Jr. To the Cleveland brown don't
have questioned why we signed O'Dell and then traded him.
As I said publicly twice, we didn't sign him to
trade him, but obviously things changed. And frankly what changed
is another team made an offer we couldn't refuse, and
of course that team is the Cleveland Browns. Very good.
(26:41):
Did he wake up? He woke up one day? You
know what that's that's from um? Uh Godfather? Yes? Do
you know what the Aufrey couldn't refuse us? No? I
actually was impressed. I got Godfather. Um. The aufre he
couldn't refuse was a head of a horse in his bedding.
Oh that's I'll have to check out that movie. Sounds
(27:08):
pretty good Godfather two and three as well? Is that
only too good? You don't need god right? Okay? All right, Well,
the Cincinnati Bengals are sent to release linebacker Vantes Burfe.
Actually think that his Godfather too, isn't it. That's Godfather one?
That's one. No, that's didn't Michael Corleone make him the afre.
He couldn't refuse. I thought that's Godfather too. I think

Um So, Russell Westbrook is just he's become that guy. Right,
(29:08):
He's become that guy that everything is difficult guy for
no reasonable reason. Everything is difficult for that guy. Right,
doesn't play well against Oklahoma's against a golden state and
doesn't want to answer questions. Got a technical foul, So
(29:31):
technically he's over the technical foul limit and should be
suspended for a game, but doesn't we just a curmudgeon
for curmudgeon's sake, And look, I will not take the
side of a fan who yells things at him, well not,
but I will also point out that he kind of
(29:52):
went off on a kid who touched him when he
was standing right next to him courtside, and then on
the dad during the game. Alright, in and of itself,
I don't think the dad needs to be lectured. The
kid could have been told like, hey, dude, you gotta
you know, please don't please, don't touch us when we
can't see you. That's just weird. But it's not like
(30:14):
he's the first person to be touched and then going
off on a fan. It's like, look, I don't think
that's okay. But in fairness to other fans, you were
engaging and making eye contact and muttering back and they
can't hear what you're saying if not for the cell
phone video, and they think you're engaging with them, and
(30:37):
whether it's the officials the other team occasionally teammates media
members like, look, this is not that hard. This is
not hard work. This is not something that you can't
have a great It makes you just like Steph Curry
so much more. It's a lot like design thing, like, hey,

but at the end of the day, you're playing basket ball,
you miss shots, still playing basketball. He just become that
guy where everything he's just Debbie Downer, dude, everything, it's
me against the world guy and instead of being an
incredibly likable story and guy, right, because it's pretty obvious
(31:21):
this is not really who he is. You watch him
with his kid, you know, you watching with his kid,
You're like, man, that's pretty awesome. Takes his kid everywhere,
a kid toddling around basketball floor while he's shooting around.
You don't have that sort of flamboyant flair with clothing,
willing to willing to dress at times inappropriately or at
times just take a chance in what you're wearing, you know,
(31:44):

It's like all that is fine, Like that's the guy
I think he is. But he's gotten to this place
where no one can question him. He can and have
a normal conversation. He can't have a normal back and

just that crap gets old. Hey, dude, it's old. It's

The game today is big deal, little deal, no deal. Alright,
big deal, little deal or no deal that Michigan State
(34:20):
may have to play a big ten opponents in the
second round, as Minnesota would have to beat Louisville and
the Spartans would have to top Bradley. But Michigan States,
with all the issues with their draw may have to
face a conference opponents in round two. Is that a
big deal? Little deal or no deal? No deal? Did
you happen to see what happened last time Michigan State
played Minnesota this season? Mm hmm, I can't recall off
(34:42):
the top of my head, Domination Nation. Yeah, it was
not It was not pretty. Michigan State played twenty conference games,
they only played Minnesota once. They beat them at home
seventy nine to fifty five, so I know it's a
neutral site. They also, by the way, Michigan State played
Louisville earlier this year, so that that would actually be
(35:04):
more problematic a team that beat them earlier this season
in Louisville, Kentucky. So um. I think Louisville wins the
game anyway, and I think it'll be a rematch of
Louisville versus Michigan State, and I think it'd be a
hard fun game. I do think Michigan State probably survives,
but they are they're put They are held together by
duct tape. Big deal, a little deal or no deal?
(35:25):
That six seed Maryland in the East could play in Washington,
d C. If they make the Sweet sixteen. Little home
court advantage if you will, wouldn't be at the you know,
same place with the terms play, but you're in the
You're in your home base. Is that a big deal?
Little deal with no deal? It's a little deal. It
doesn't hurt. It doesn't hurt. You know, you got a
(35:46):
younger team to have a fan base, and there's a
big fan base in in d C. What the Terrapins.
But do I think that it's like Kansas They could
play in Kansas City in the Sweet sixteen, but they
just lost in Kansas City, Hiowa State. So it's not
as strong a pull as you think. Um. I think
it's a little deal. I think any little bit helps,
But I don't necessarily think he gets someone with the top.
(36:06):
They got a tough draw Alright, big deal, a little
deal or no deal? What do you know? Another location issue?
I think we know where we're going here. That's Cincinnati
in the South region is playing just up the road
in Columbus. Same thing. Little deal. Yeah, I think that's
a little deal. It you know, there are a seventh scene.
They're not happy about it, and rightfully so. Right that
would put them between the best team in the field
(36:29):
that that seems really low for Cincinnati, you know, whereas
I think they're more along the lines of like the
eighteenth second best team in the you know, maybe or
maybe even a little bit higher. But playing in Columbus
don't have to travel as much. That that's that's a
bigger deal for them. It's still a little deal. Though.
Here's a side note, as these championship games. You were
(36:49):
talking with Pat Forty about this. I totally agreed Doug
that conference tournaments should not be the end all be
all of deciding how good a team is. But what
it seems like is that they don't have any sort
of effect whatsoever when you play on Sunday. And that's
where you know, Cincinnati gets a really good win against
(37:11):
Houston in that game, and while it shouldn't change everything,
it should change at least maybe something or and it
just doesn't seem like we've ever had that with the
games that are played on Sunday. Hey, but it's weird,
like some some it does affect some, it doesn't affect
like it didn't affect that game. But they came out
and said, like, well at Tennessee when the SC Championship
(37:32):
would have put them as a one seed, well they
got their asses whipped, you know, like okay, So I mean,
I don't know, like you just said that it affected
that seed, but it doesn't affect other seas. That's weird. Yeah,
those in the Big Ten and the the American were
the last two games to be played. Anyway, Arkansas is
not gonna be in the Dance. Big deal, little deal
or no deal that Arkansas sophomore Daniel Gafford is skipping
(37:54):
the n I T to prepare for the NBA Draft.
I don't understand this. I don't like this happened last
year with a couple of guys, and Gafford will be
He'll be drafted. He probably could have been a late
first round pick last year, late first early second round
pick this year. Like this is to me, this is
a joke and a bad one. By the way, you
have a better chance of being drafted highly if you
perform well and then you go play mess and square garden.
(38:14):
That's where guys get really bad advice. Like your basket
player gible won't why don't you play? I don't it's
not football. Like football, you could legitimately, especially at running back,
maybe a wide receiver. Get your head taken off. Um,
I don't, I don't know. I don't know. I don't
understand this. I think it's a big deal. But because
I think we we've somehow been like, okay, that makes
(38:36):
sense when it makes absolutely no sense to most people involved.
Big deal, little deal or no deal that Giants GM
Dave Gettleman is going all out in defending quarterback Eli Manning,
saying this today on a tele conference. This narrative that
elis all the paint can't play is a cruc if
you turn around, you take a look at what he's
making right now, look around the league and see what
(38:57):
quarterbacks are making the way he finished the season, lot
of backs and what he's making. There really wasn't a
decision to make a water backs. He's got a plan.
He just doesn't want to tell what. I don't gotta
tell anybody else my plan. It's a double secret, triple
secret plan. Is it a big deal, little deal or
no deal that he's going to the wall for Eli?
(39:18):
Mm hmmm. Um, I think it's a big deal because
it chose the power of Eli manning the Mannings in
the family. Big deal, a little deal or no deal.
That the Patriots are no longer the favorites to win
Super Bowl fifty four. They are the co favorites, sharing
the same odds as the Kansas City Chiefs according to
bet Online, listed as eight to one favorites. Now we're
(39:41):
both New England and Kansas. Well, they lost so many
pieces that you're like, oh, what are they gonna put
out there? Right? Um, I think it's a little deal though,
because we knew the Chiefs would be good. By the way,
is that still the same thing with Terry Hill being
investigated for domestic battery? Like, we we don't know on
that one, and now the Kansas City are saying that
there's another report police are invested gaining I love more
(40:03):
on that at the top of the hour and throughout
the show, Doug. But yeah, that's not that's not good.
And he was just about to get paid too, right, Yes, yes,
a big deal, little dealer, no deal that Johnny Manziella
is suiting up and practicing with the Memphis Express in
the Alliance of American Football. I think that's a big deal.
I think that shows My guests would be that shows
anyone who thought the reason he left the CFL was
(40:25):
because of any sort of off the field activities. No,
he just wanted to get back and play in the States.
This is game time on the duck got Lap show.

it right now. In terms like dealer priceless price, invoice price,

they want to lose, They want to lose better off
they lose better position in the lottery, but not when
(41:31):

and not the way in which Lebron's being questioned. We

(41:51):
Fox Sports Radio. Now Here's what I'm gonna do. Okay,
I'm gonna take shouts at two legends. Here hows someone do? Um,
the job of calling a basketball game is pretty awesome.
I did the radio calls of them over the weekend
(42:14):
for the Big Ten Tournament. I've done college basketball games
for years and and I'll fully admit that, Um, every
time I've done a game, I haven't been able to
attend practice or the shoot around or shoot around the
day of the of or before the game. I haven't
(42:35):
a lot of times. Now I do my radio show
because I don't want to take a day off. I'm
here for you. I am at your service. I want
to be your guy who's here every single stinking day
for you. So if that means that I have to
take a red eye, get off the plane, go to
a practice or shoot around, then go to then do
the radio show, then go do the game, and have
(42:56):
to get there three hours early so I can meet
with both teams in a different period of time. That's
what I do. When you're in the n B. Ah,
you're a hometown announcer. It's pretty pretty good gig. You
don't kill it financially, but you do well. You know,
some guys do half a season, quarter season. Sometimes guys
(43:19):
do a full season. They do all eighty two games.
Walt Clyde Frasier. Now, for people who uh don't know
who Clyde Frasier is, this guy. He and Earl Monroe
were absolute legends in New York basketball, playing for the
(43:41):
champion Next Teams, last NBA champion, Next Tea. And of
course Clyde Frasier has made a name for himself in business.
And he's always been this dude that's not afraid to
wear anything suit what he's that guy that will wear
any sort of creative suit, even though now some of
his suits screamed seventies more than two. But look when
(44:03):
you're hometown announcer guy and your legendary guy, sometimes you
don't have to show up early and talk to the
other team and know what's going on with the other team.
So look, I'll play for you what he said in
regards to Lebron James, and I'll tell you why he's wrong,
and I'll tell you why he's right. Take a listen
(44:26):
to face that an NBA, I think you should be
more part of your team. Books, no matter what is
going on on the on the end, in the public,
you've gotta be a part of the team. Maybe in
the locker room you're not, but you have to exclude
that type of togetherness in public. Books. And right now
(44:46):
we see he doesn't really care. He says he doesn't
really care. Now he was commenting on the fact that
Lebron James didn't get up during a time out and
was sitting in his throne chair at the very end
of the Lakers bet inch and he was talking with
somebody in the stands should be pointing out the player.
The person he was talking to in the stands of
Tyson Chandler, who also happens to be an l a Laker,
(45:09):
and that's a chair that Lebron James sits in, not
some of, not most of every single game. That should
Lebron get up and at least fain to pay attention. Yeah, sure,
but this is something that he has done the entire season.
(45:31):
He has sat in that exact same chair, and the
only difference is that right now they're not winning, nor
are they necessarily trying to win. Although Lebron James didn't
play well down the stretch and got his shot blocked
by uh Mario Hasna. So the first thing is to
Walt Clyde Fraser, hey man, when you get there a
(45:55):
couple of hours for the game, wants a saunter over
to the Lakers bench and say, hey, does Lebron always
sit with the team? Does he never sit with the team? Like,
what's the deal with Lebron? Give me a little insight,
and look, Lebron didn't play well down the stretch. Matter
of fact, he shot the ball horribly in the fourth
quarter and the Lakers choked away a lead. And while
you can sit here and tell me that the Lakers
(46:16):
are better off for lottery position losing that game, everyone
knows that when Lebron comes to New York City, he
likes to score a ton of points and rub it
in Nicks fans, rub it in their face. He's always
like to do that. And it felt like he went
to the well. You know, I've said this before. It's
a lot like in Empire Strikes Back when Uh, when
(46:40):
Hans Solo goes to hit you know, the hyper drive
and it's deactivated, Like at some point you're gonna go
to the well to hit that hyper drive. Lebron James
playoff mode and he goes. And that's what has felt
like it's happened. He's looked like a human being. He's
(47:00):
looked older, he's looked beat herble And I love how
some of my some of my co workers here at Fox,
like Chris Bazar, took him off the list of top
five players in the NBA. I said, not top ten.
People scream from the mountaintops. If Broussard says not top five,
(47:21):
that means reality probably not top ten, because it's really
because he's been really good for a long time now.
It doesn't mean that Walt Frasier isn't correct in the
fact that Lebron should be more engaged. Lebron should have
been a better teammate Lebron shouldn't have thrown anyone under
(47:42):
the bus, and he should have put his arm around
Luke Walton at a very early stage in this season
and been more engaged when he was injured, much like
Rondo was when Rondo was out for a pronounced amount
of time because of a hand injury. But he didn't.
But let's not use where he sits on the bench
and who he's talking to on the bench when he
(48:04):
didn't correctly identify the fact that he's talking to Tyson
Chandler was a member of the Lakers, nor did he
actually seem to know that Lebron actually sits there every game,
same spot. Doesn't matter what what court, what arena, anything
sits in the same spot. So Lebron as a legend,
needs to come off of his high horse and probably
(48:26):
get up and be more engaged. And you know, Luke
Walton should have challenged him to do so, Hey, dude,
get up, getting the huddle like everybody else. But in
sitting at the end of the bench and talking to
Tyson Chandler, two guys with more far more basketball like
you than most anybody else in the NBA, has I
don't have as much a problem with it, Although optically
it looks bad. When you're calling a game, it doesn't
(48:51):
take that much effort to go over to the other
bench to talk to some other assistants, to talk to
the other broadcast crew, to talk to a couple of
players and find out what else is going on. That's
not what lide Phraser did. He didn't say, hey, I
talked to some of those guys and they're like, he's
I don't think Lebron has been a good leader. I
don't think it has been a good leader, but it
(49:14):
and I know he doesn't get up, but it's not
that hard to get up. We're not asking all that much.
There's this, have you seen studies about people who make
their bed every day? How much more more likely you
are to be successful when you make your bed? Have
you guys seen that. There's a ton of studies on
(49:36):
this that that if you make your bed, you are
exponentially more likely. It reveals a bunch about your personality,
but you're more likely to make more money. And making
your bed requires a very minimal amount of effort and
(49:59):
a min mole amount of discipline, but it says a
lot about who you are. Right, That's Lebron James getting
up at a time out, that's Lebron James getting up
and dapping up a teammate. That's Lebron James showing true leadership.
And instead guys who don't cover the team normally, and
(50:19):
even guys that do you just sit there and go
like he is checked out, he is disengaged. It feeds
into any narrative negative narrative that somebody may have about
Lebron James as a person, as a player, and more
importantly as a leader. So I don't think Clyde Fraser
(50:39):
is right for for saying something about Lebron sitting at
the end of the bench showing he doesn't care. But
I don't necessarily think he's all that wrong that Lebron
James doesn't care. Car shopping can be confusing with terms

Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports TRADEO Got a lot to
get to next hour, do a lot more College basketball.
Nick Baule will join US Iowa State, said coach Steve
Prome will join US ruler of the Proman Empire. They
of course won the Big Twelve Tournament again, fourth time
in six years, four time in six years. Wow, let's
(53:34):
welcome in Chris Mannis he joins the show. Uh Mannix
of course, senior NBA writer for Sports Illustrated and a
bunch of things to get to. Um. I actually wanted
to start with two big injuries that took place over
the weekend, mostly because I feel like we're all kind
of locked in on college hoop for the for the
for the weekend, and we may have missed Malcolm Brogden
(53:56):
being out six to eight weeks. How do you they
think that affects the team with the best record in
the NBA. You know, given that it's six day weeks
and that you know, if you look at the short end,
that'll get him back in time for the second round
of the playoffs. I don't know how significant it is.
If it's even longer and you get to the second round,
which we know in the Eastern Conference is going to
(54:18):
be a dog fight, it's significant. I mean, Malcolm Brogden
has been terrific either as a one or kind of
a combo two with that team. His numbers across the
board have been up, and he's just been a big
part of their team success. So, uh, you know, they
have to kind of cross their fingers and hope that
it's on the short end of that six day week
times able again. So how does that affect their team? Though?
(54:41):
How important is he to who they are and what
they do? I mean, he's he's pretty important given that
his his place in the starting lineup in the rotation. Uh. Defensively,
they've been a lot better this year. I think Malcolm
Brogden has had a pretty big role in that. I
mean they've been kind of a switch happy type of
defense under Mike and Holder that's maximized the length on
(55:02):
that team. These are all kind of attributes that that
Malcolm Brogdon has and without him, you know, you deplete
that bench by moving somebody else into that starting lineup
and you rely on guys, you wouldn't say yeah. I
mean it's significant. I just I just don't know. I
don't want to read too much into until we see
how deep into the playoffs they get without Malcolm Brogden,
because if they can go through the first round, I mean,
(55:22):
the bottom three in the Eastern Conference playoff racket, I
don't know how big a threat they are, whether it's Brooklyn, Detroit, uh,
you know, Miami even I just think you you can
win a series against any of those three teams. About
Malcolm brogdon, second round, you might have more trouble. Doug
gotlive show here on Fox Sports Trading, All right, what
about c J McCollums knee injury. I mean that was
I mean when when he got learned the news that
(55:45):
it was only going to be a week or so
until he's reevaluated and didn't have it wasn't significant as
to kind of look on first glance, he had to
breathe a huge side release. If you're poor with I mean,
you you can't underscore. Doug, how much is that stake
for the Blazers this year's playoff? I mean they have
to win at least in the first round. Maybe more
in order to keep that team together. You know, they've
(56:06):
this this McCollum, Damian Lillard. You know, I guess us
of nurks throw him in that group. This mix has
accomplished nothing in the playoffs in recent memory, and they've
they've had some some tough fights and and all that.
But you know, getting swept by New Orleans last year
was a bad look. And if they have a similar
out in this year's playoffs, I think something significant happens there.
So CJ being healthy, I mean not at least gives
(56:29):
them a chance at making some noise in the postseason.
Without him, they were right for a first round beating
Doug Gatlam show here on Fox Sports Radio, Clyde Fraser
got into Lebron and said he doesn't care. Now, some
of that is the visual of him sitting at the
end of the bench, and I pointed out that, like, look,
if you actually ask anybody with the Lakers, he always
sits in that chair. But he he doesn't get up
for time outs. He doesn't look completely engaged in what
(56:52):
the team is doing. How much of what Clyde saying
is the general thought of people in the NBA. I
don't uh, you know, and I've had a couple of
conversations about this with with people around the league. It's
a liberating a little bit too much into it. I mean,
the Lakers this year have been you know, the kings
of bad optics, you know, from start to finish, whether
(57:14):
it's Lebron here, Rondo there. The body language on some
of the players throughout the year hasn't been great. But
this this seems to be you know, much ado about nothing.
I mean, what do you want the guy to be?
You know, Rod the huddle for all forty eight minutes
of every single game during the year, and as you
point out, they've he's done this, you know before, uh,
you know, during the season. I do think there's something too,
(57:35):
you know, the division in the locker room in some
ways being Lebron James infused. I do believe that there
are players in that locker room that look at Lebron
because of the Anthony Davis stuff, and I think this
guy wanted us out of there, you know, putting a
pretty easy you know connection to make is the Lebron
you know, his agent and and a d putting all
(57:56):
that together, I think there are players in that locker
room that have been demoralized by that. So if you
want to, you know, critique him for that and whatever
his role was in that, that that's fair game. But
just the whole bench thing that, given that he's done
a lot a bunch of times before that, that seems
to be a bit of a stretch to me. Doug
Gottlive Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Okay, let's let's
(58:16):
let's get to how the Lakers intend on fixing. It
pretty obvious that Luke goes. Who becomes the next head coach? Well,
I mean, a lot of people expected to be Tyrone
lou Um. You know, Tyron would never make a move
on Luke's job before there was some resolutions that that's
just the nature of their relationship. They're really tight. But
if that became available, I would think he'd be a
(58:38):
strong candidate. Um. I've heard the name Mark Jackson banded about,
but I can't believe that, you know, Rob Bolenka would
go in that direction. Um. Other than that, I'm not
exactly you know sure, who's who would be on the
top of the list. I mean, Tyler makes some sense
because of the relationship with Lebron, But I think the
bigger problem in the coaches, how do they avoid coming
(58:58):
back in Octo over with you know, largely this same
roster with you know, a new group of mercenaries swapped
in there. I mean, how do they avoid? I mean,
there are there are people that in l A and
inside Lebron circle that that believe that they're gonna get
Anthony Davis. I'm not as convinced, but they believe it.
So if they get that, if that that happens, then okay,
we're they're trending in the right direction. But if it
(59:21):
goes a different way, I mean, I don't know how
you can bring this whole group back and expect them
to have, you know, significantly different results. So I think
that's a bigger question than that. Who becomes the next
that coach? No, but you okay, I was gonna get
that the coach goes, then the players? Okay, So what
is what's the plan? Beat? Because Anthony Davison may take
you trading away some of these younger pieces. Um, I'm
(59:42):
interested in who else they would add, But I'm also
interested in what is the plan? B Is is Kauai
even a possibility? I'm skeptical and be because I mean,
I spent some time on this story in December January,
when I was writing a profile in Kauai for for
s I and the strong belief I got was that
it's it's the Toronto Clippers thing. Um. I think he'll
(01:00:04):
take other meetings and the Lakers might be on that list,
the Nicks might be on that list, But I think
ultimately it was gonna come down to to those two teams.
With the outcome of this season, of course having an impact,
but you know you're going down the list. I mean,
Lebron mentioned this after the Knicks game, the number of
free agents that are out there and their chances of
getting them. I don't know who they're a front runner for.
I don't think they're a front runner for Durant. I
(01:00:26):
don't think they're front runner for Kauai. I guess you
could overpay Jimmy Butler if the Sixers get a little
you know, nervous about Jimmy in the back end of
that contract. But does that make you, uh measurably better
team in the postseason, you know, with with Jimmy Butler.
I don't know. I mean, I think they've got real
problems here, Doug. I mean, look, I don't want to
(01:00:46):
get go down a rabbit hole. But you know, Jeff
Van Gunney made that comment about exploring a trade for Lebron.
I don't think that's the dumbest idea. I really don't.
That's the most valuable he has the most valuous. But
you can't. But you can't trade him. Why because he
won't show up? Except like, is he gonna go play
for the Knicks? Would you go play for Denver? No,
(01:01:08):
j Lebron James is not going to Denver. You know
I wrote this last year, Doug. The Nuggets were frantically
trying to get a meeting with Lebron before before he
made the decision go to l A. They knew it
was likely he'd turned them down, but they Tim Conley
in that front office was desperately trying to make a
deal for Lebron. If they go out in the second
round in Denver, I bet they make another run at it.
(01:01:30):
I understand, I understand, But he's not going to show
up to work at Denver like he doesn't have a
no trade he does have it? No, you're retired. No.
I just think he thinks I just moved my kids
out to l A. You guys, fix it. You guys
want me how to hear you? Guys, fix it. I'm
not moving like this is the reality of it. He's
not moving to like this. I love you and I
love again. hYP hypothetically, theoretically it makes a ton of sense, right,
(01:01:54):
you deal him. He get a bunch of players, he
gets a shot at the title playing, but he moving
to Denver, Colorado after moving from Cleveland to right like
Antonio Brown, Antonio Brown told told us everything we need
to need to know about star players. They're gonna go
wherever the hell they want to go, especially Lebron j
It's actually players are more powerful, and Lebron is more
(01:02:14):
powerful in this sport. He's not. But the threat of
retiring is far more realistic in the NFL than is
the n Just this, he's not showing up to work
in Denver, Colorado. He's literally worth he's worth a billion dollars.
He's not going to So he didn't move your whole
operation to Los Angeles to be here nine months and
(01:02:35):
then somebody go like, hey, you're gonna go huh okay.
But if you get to August and and they are
not able to make a significant move, do you see
a clear path for how they win with this guy
like hot in the next two or three years while
he's still playing you. But no, but again, that's not
Lebron's Like even that wouldn't make him want to leave,
like he would just say, you guys, fix it. That's
(01:02:57):
all you guys, figure it out. I'm showing dork. I'm
gonna go make my shows in my movies. You know,
I'm not gonna sit here and be the bad guy
because I went to eight Trade Finals and won three
NBA championships. Like I just I'm I think the reality
of it is like again on paper, Denver. Sure, it's
like people said, like what about him in Portland with
all those shooters. Sure, but it ain't happening, you know,
(01:03:20):
like New York would be the only other any I mean,
Clippers or New York are the only other two places.
And I honestly think the Clippers think they're gonna be
better off they don't have him, And I kind of
think the Knicks dude too. And I don't think he
wants to work for Jim Dolan for I don't disagree anyway,
because I don't see Magic Johnson ever doing that. You know,
even entertaining that possibility. I'm just saying, like from a
(01:03:42):
from a basketball position, um, you know, trying to pull
something like that off makes a lot of sense. It
just does, because I don't think they're going anywhere if
they can't get Anthony Davison. Let's say, let's say that
the worst case scenario for the Lakers happens, which is
Kyrie takes the money and goes back to Boston. You know,
they make a run the playoffs, and then the Celtics.
Then it doesn't matter why Anthony Davison is because the
Sulfics will go all in to get him no matter
what and say we'll take them. We'll run the risk
(01:04:04):
that you walk in, Like, what do you do? I
just I think that sets up, you know, a worst
case scenario of a degrading Lebron James on a team
that at best is like a seven seed or a
sixth seed in the Western Conference playoffs, you know going forward. Yeah,
I don't think you're wrong. I mean, look, there's Kemba Walker,
There's some other guys out there. You know, maybe you
make Charlotte. I don't think Arlett gon Nickel and Dime
(01:04:26):
Kemball Walker and he likes it there. I mean, I
think that's I think you're right. There's a lot of
free agents this something. But you go to corn and
if you take Anthony Davis off the table, who's the
best for agent Like Draymond Green. I think he's the
best unrestricted guy of that group. We got a lot
of restricted players. They don't go anywhere. So I mean,
you're just looking down the barrel of a really tough
few years. If you get to August and you haven't
(01:04:47):
done anything of significance. Doug gott Let's show you're on
Fox Sport tray that that that's the voice of one
Chris mannix. Uh all right, man, it's a couple of
things I want to I want to run by you.
What's the state of the Celtics a team that has
been kind of all over the map. Yeah, I mean
the numbers suggest that they're playing better, and offensively they are,
(01:05:07):
but Sacramento game is scare at home. They couldn't put
Atlanta away on Saturday. They've got Denver tonight. They're doing
it without Gordon Hayward. So if they put together a
complete game, that will be Denver and Golden States that
have knocked off in the last couple of weeks, and
I think you can interpret something from that. But their
defense has been lousy. Um, they've given up a lot
of points and a lot of quarters, like just getting
(01:05:28):
gashed for those like thirty thirty eight point quarters, which
has been kind of a bit of an achilles heel
for them all season long. The good news is that,
like you know, the Jalen Browns of the world have
really settled into their roles, which is something that we
didn't see much of this year. And Kyrie is back
to playing at a pretty high level. But you know
that they've got to start to step up, step it
up defensively. They're they're just not They're they're not a
(01:05:51):
very good defensive team right now, whereas that's been the
hallmark of them for most of the last few seasons.
The Warriors want a couple of games that Kevin Durant,
which of course is like when Celtics win a couple
of games without Kyrie, people start to go, well, are
they better off without? Um? But what do we make
of the Warriors playing well without Kevin Durrett? I mean,
I look at it as DeMarcus Cousins thing, don't you.
(01:06:14):
I mean played much better. He finally played well, and
then of course now he has m R I after
playing well for two games. But they're I mean, like
their only vulnerability to me is Cousins because they're gonna
have to play him, uh, you know, fifteen twenty minutes
at least, and probably more than that in the postseason
to keep him kind of happy. We'll see what he
can do in the fourth quarter. But he has I mean,
(01:06:34):
you've looked at games like against Boston against Houston the
first time around, and he just get gets cooked on
those picking rolls, like they target him every time he's
in the game. Then you have a game like you know,
the last week with the Rockets where he's you know,
looking like, you know, close to DeMarcus Cousins of old.
He's passing like the elite passer he is in his position,
he's blocking shots, taking charges. If they get that DeMarcus Cousins,
(01:06:56):
it's everything's good in Golden State Land. I'm not worried
about the rents and you know, Curries and and Stephen
Raymond Green is miserable from beyond the three point line
this year. I mean, I'm not too worried about him
being a liability because he is the only guy that
that could be a liability and if you have to
play him twenty five minutes to keep him happy in
the postseason, Um, you know that's that That's something that
that bears watching. That's the voice of Chris Mannix. Mannix.
(01:07:19):
Last thing, Russell Westbrook Like, I like him and I
don't know if I like him. I I respect him,
and I do like the fact that he's helped Paul
George have an incredible season. And I don't blame him
for how upset he was at what happened in Utah.
But I mean between the way he handles the media,
(01:07:40):
the way he handles the press, the way he handles
opposing fans, Like, I just like, I get it, but
I'm kinda over it. Am I overreacting to what I see?
I look, I think he you know, not the Utah stuff,
though you can make an argument that he certainly overreacted
by threading the man's wife whatever there was that she said. Um,
(01:08:04):
the media stuff. You know, this stems from, you know,
ten years ago with Ross. I mean, he's never gotten
over the fact that everybody you know doubted his ability
to be an NBA point guard, and you know he's
got the Finals that first year Magic Johnson is calling
him the worst point guard or whoever played the Finals,
or at one of the worst performances. He's everything that's
been said about him in the past sticks with him,
(01:08:25):
and that's created the persona that he is today. I
just I've always had a soft spot for Westbrook because
to me, Westbrook is doing something now that no NBA
player is ever gonna do again. There's never gonna be
an NBA player that average a triple deubl for three
straight seasons. They're just not like Ben Simmons might do
it once, and you know a handful of other guys
might pull it off once even twice. Nobody's ever gonna
(01:08:47):
do it three straight times. This is the most untouchable
mark in in NBA history. Uh, There's gonna be a
player Doug that scores a hundred points in the game
before there's somebody average a triple debl for three straight seasons.
And you know, I don't think he gets enough credit
for playing like that. Certainly there are some flaws in
his game. When he goes hero ball and you see
him on the stat line of one for four team
through three quarters. You question the shot selection, but man,
(01:09:09):
you know this guy's doing some something just unprecedented. It's
it's a lot of fun to watch him out there.
Times awesome stuff. Chris Manx, Manx, thanks so much for
joining us. You got car. Car shopping can be confusing
in terms like deal, the priceless price, invoice price, true

the car that he wants. You can recognize a good

the true car. You enjoy more confident car buying experience.
(01:09:31):
Let's uh, let's get you over to Dan by er
Dan when he got Doug the story that we touched
on a bit earlier. The Kansas City Star reported last
week that chiefs Wide Receiver Tyree Kill was being investigated
for a possible or an alleged assault of a minor will.
The Overland Park Police Department confirmed to the Star that
they now are investing two alleged incidents involving Tyreek Hill.
(01:09:55):
That would be the one from last week and another
on March fifth. Hill has not been charged, has not
been a rested, but police are investigating two incidents or
the other that was reported on March five, Well that
case was closed three days later. Since NATI Bengals are
releasing linebacker Vantes Berfect, Chiefs sign free agent corner of
the Show Brelance Will a one year deal with the
NFL Network says free as a wide receiver, Jordy Nelson
(01:10:16):
is going to visit the Seattle Seahawks. Cowboys going to
meet with freeg AT one receiver Randall Cobb. Giants GM
Dave Gentleman speaking out on the trade that Santo Dell
Beckham Jr. To Cleveland. As far as Cleveland's concerned, talks
were initiated by them and John John knew we weren't
going to give o'dellaway, so frankly, his initial offer piqued
our interest and away we went. After much discussion, we
(01:10:39):
just believed this was in the best interest of the
New York Football Giants. The first and the third in
Jabril Peppers for O b. J. Vettera. Defensive lineman Hellodi
Nada announced he's retiring from the NFL after thirteen seasons,
making that announcement from a top Mount Kilimanjaro and some
news from the NBA. The bad news for the Warriors,
No DeMarcus Cousins or Andre Gadala tonight against the Spurs.
(01:11:01):
But the good news Cousins m R. I and his
injured foot came back clean. He's considered day to day
and the Warriors are getting Kevin Durant back tonight from
his ankle injury. We'll be back to the Dug Gotlin
showing ted seconds. But first a word from farmers at
Farmers Insurance. We know every windshield collision has a unique
sound beatle bird poop, drone, seen it, covered it. Dr
(01:11:23):
Farmers are farmers underwritten my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance exchange
that affiliates products unavailable every state. Let's listen to Morrison.
Dave gettiman so get him in. Of course, is the
general manager of the New York Giants. He's previously the
general manager of the Carolina Panthers um and one of
the reasons that he was fired as general manager of
(01:11:45):
the Carolina Panthers was Thomas Davis was a guy. He
wasn't willing to give an extension to. Thomas Davis, by
the way, was eventually cut by the Carolina Panthers. Now
I think he's up. He's with the charge, just hard
with the Chargers and then um greg Olsen, who flirted
with retirement several times. I've been told greg Olsen's come
back and playing football and not gonna be broadcasting again.
But he didn't want to give an extension to greg Olsen,
(01:12:06):
who has been often injured as well. But because they
were veterans. And remember, you know, he lowballed Josh Norman.
Norman went to the Redskins. He also trade away Steve Smith,
but they went to a Super Bowl after trading waste
Steve Smith. So some of his moves have been peculiar
in the past and drawn the era of of players
in the past. Here's Gettleman with the media earlier today.
(01:12:29):
Trust me, we got a plan and over time, you know,
you've got to be patient. You know, everybody wants the answers.
Now we live in an instant gratification society. Over time,
you'll see it. You gotta trust it. It really was
about it's about football, and you know we've got positions
to address. You know, this was about us having the
(01:12:49):
ability to address multiple positions. Well, it's either it's either
admitting a mistake. Right, they pay him twenty million dollars
and then trade him. You to trade him before you
paid twenty million dollars, simple right, because you you weren't
actually forced to pay him any money before you traded him.
They gave him a new deal a year earlier than
(01:13:11):
they needed to, So some of that is admitting a mistake,
but in the hey, it's a long term play. Remember
they have two first round traff picks. And I don't
know if you've been paying attention, but Ryan Fitzpatrick is
now a quarterback with the Miami Dolphins. The Washington Redskins
went out and got case Keenum, so that leaves the
Giants and maybe the Chargers as bidders to go and
(01:13:33):
try and get Josh rosen Jack signed. Nick Foles. You know,
there's been the Raiders rumored to really really like Kyler Murray,
but so have the Arizona Cardinal Arizona Cardinals. So you
sit there and go like, well, how many teams actually
need a quarterback? Think about that for a second, Like,
(01:13:54):
I don't love Joe Flacco, but the Broncos are gonna
make him. He's there starting quarterback. Go around the league,
tell me who needs a quarterback? And if the Cardinals
are gonna draft Kyler Murray, they're gonna trade away. Uh,
they're gonna trade away Josh Rosen. Bills have their guy,
the Jets have their guy. The Ravens have their guy.
(01:14:16):
The Steelers have their guy. The Browns have their guy.
Bengals do not. They got Andy Dalton come back off
of injury, but the Bengals don't feel like movers and
shakers even Dalton, remember they got as a second round
draft pick. Texans have their guy, Colts have their guy,
Titans have two guys now, Jaguars have their guy. Chiefs
Chargers need to back up Broncos Raiders. Raiders may be
(01:14:38):
interested in Kyler Murray like go through the league and
there were rumors about Rosen last year. Yet either the
quarterback out of Ohio State, what do you got Josh
Rosen and they'll have two first round picks. It feels
(01:14:59):
like that's God be the plan. I mean, you can't
just sit here and say you're gonna, you know, load
up on offensive lineman and try and run the football
thirty times thirty five times with Sae Kwon Barkley game
are you Me's? He may be different, but he's not
an idiot, And I think that would be dumb to
think that that Eli Manning can win you a bunch
(01:15:19):
of games. When Golden Tate is now you know an
overpaid slot wide receiver. Car shopping can be confusing in
terms like dealer price, list price in voice price. True

the car that you want. So you can recognize a

This was Colin Cowherd on Ben Roethlisberger, so this is
quite a claim. Josh Harris, former Big Bend teammate in Pittsburgh,
says he intentionally fumbled four years ago. The video is arguable,
nobody can really approve it, but he said weeks seventeen,
(01:17:31):
we're playing the Bengals, up by ten, a minute left.
Todd Haley, who Ben hated, called her run play with
very little time left in the game. Big Ben wanted
to kneel and when the play came into the huddle,
Big Ben rolled his eyes. So if you see the play,
he then fumbled on the next play, and Josh Harris
is saying, you know, Big band to spit, Todd Haley
fumbled the ball. That is just not appropriate in football.
(01:17:54):
Again in baseball, fourth game of a series, up by
nine in your division, it's August, your party too hard,
you give up an at bat. I see it in basketball, tennis, golf,
you don't do that in football, sure or not, you
don't do it. And here's the thing. Lavian Bell just
his fault, Antonio Brown his fault, Big Ben his fault,
Mike Tom and his fault. Here's the thing I don't
(01:18:16):
need Antonio Brown to be a leader. I don't need
Lavian Bell to be a leader. I just need to
be talented. But I need my quarterback to be a leader.
That's not leadership. Um. I don't know if Josh Harris
is telling the truth. I don't know. I do know
that there are sometimes guys make an egregious error and
dudes would be like, what are you shaving points? It's
(01:18:36):
like a wink wink, not like a like almost funny. Um,
he's not on the Steelers. I think there's probably a
chance that there's some bitterness there, probably towards big Ben
because Big Ben didn't buy into him. And by the way,
he was supposed to hand Josh Harris to football and
just happened to drop it. Do I think big Ben
dropped on purpose? I have no idea. It would be
(01:18:58):
a terrible look if he did. But I also know
that controversy and confrontation is followed Um his previous offense.
According to Todd Haley, everywhere he's been, all I can
tell you is the brass of the Pittsburgh Steelers believes
in bed. They believe that he is harder to replace
(01:19:18):
than Antonio Brown. Lebian Bell seemed to get along fine
with Big Ben. Fine with him, um, maybe not perfectly
because he didn't get the ball every time he snapped
the football, but fine with Big Ben. That was Levian
Bell's issue is with management, not with Big Button. And
maybe management and Big Ben are one and the same,
(01:19:40):
and so all I'll I agree with with Colin that
that that quarterback is a position of leadership and it
is more important than Antonio Brown's and Levan Bells and
Josh Harris's and anything else. Steelers appear to believe in
Big Ben even though he's an aging, uh former star
quarterback who's not nearly as effective as he used to be.
(01:20:05):
He's harder to replace than Antonio Brown than Levian Bell.
And that's what the Steelers are betting on, and they're
betting on that, that fact that Ben has learned from
his own leadership missteps. The whole thing is very very interesting,
very interesting. That's what the Fox said. Car shopping can

is big. I do Malcolm Brogden getting hurt from the
(01:20:47):
Waukee Bucks like that that that that is a that
is just a team, you know, and it's a it's
a I think he fits perfectly into all the things
that they do. And because of it, you know, because
the fact that he fits into all the things they
(01:21:09):
want to do. When you when you're missing that one piece,
it makes you look like a completely different unit. I
don't know when we'll notice not having Brogden, But remember
this is the kind of the way it begins with
um as, the way it begins with NBA teams one injury.
Sometimes who's the better team has nothing to do with it.
(01:21:31):
Remember the Bulls two years ago, We're up two games
to none on the Boston Celtics and they lost Gen
Rondo and the Bulls the Celtics came back and won
that series. Injuries determined who wins an NBA championship just
as much as as who's actually the better team. And
when you're a Bucks team that with this group hasn't
won a playoff series, no matter how good. Jannisintenna Kombo
(01:21:55):
is Malcolm Brogden, who plays twenty nine minutes of game
in averages fifteen and a half points a game and
gives you incredible versatility because he can guards several positions.
He can play without the basketball. He doesn't require the
ball to be great. I think in the things that
weren't discussed this weekend, like we just glossed over because
of college hoop, and because Lebron got called out by
(01:22:17):
Clyde Fraser, and because the Warriors won a couple of
games without Kevin Durant, and because the Bucks we don't
pay attention to day to day. In the Bucks, we
pay attention to day to day and Lebron And it
wasn't your honest, Jest was still awesome. Joanna scored what
fifty in the win over the uh over the Philadelphia seventy. Right,
(01:22:40):
If it was you, honest, we would be freaking out.
But it's not. It's a piece that allows Johannest to
be honest. That's the big difference. All right. Coming up next,

this is the one time year we can talk nationally

us on Fox Sports Radio. And I know you did
(01:23:42):
some you work with Dan Buyer over the weekend, So
let's get after it. Um, you've got any major issues
you want to It's like, is there anything really worth
complaining about this year? I mean not really, I don't
have a huge issue. I mean, yeah, if we want
to build a SOB story for Michigan State, and we
know the greatest hits of that most quadry one wins,
(01:24:02):
won the the conference championship with Big Tan won the tournament. Uh,
you know, it's they kind of got a raw deal.
I don't have any issue with any of the teams
that got put in or left out in terms of
the teams that are in the playing game. So I
don't I really don't, Doug. I mean I don't think
there's anything really worth crying about, because I think when
(01:24:22):
you get to those last few resumes on the bubble, boy,
I was digging into them yesterday, there's a lot of
yuck in there, Dug, there's a there. I don't think
any team and that that got left out as a
as a major gripe. So you know, for the most part,
I was cool with it, although if there was one
thing to complain about, it was it was probably Michigan State.
All right, fair enough. You'll be co hosting with Dan
(01:24:43):
Bayer on Sunday during the tournament five to eight pm
Eastern Time, so kind of recapping the entire first weekend
in in the n c A term. Here's what I
want to do. We have six or seven minutes or so,
let's just go through games. Okay, let's do it. U
E see, you might not have their best player. That
taken on Central Florida. That feels like a lot to
(01:25:04):
me for Central Florida. Tell me I'm crazy. No, not
at all. I think they're well coached. Uh. You know,
I think the size of taco fall is going to
be an issue. And I mean, listen, you gotta have
your stud firing on all cylinders. I'm with you. I like,
I like Central floridare Okay, let's continue to kind of
work our way down down the bracket. Mississippi State taken
on Liberty. Liberty is like a lot of people's pick
(01:25:26):
to pull off the upset. Do you like that? Not?
Not really? I like. I think coach Hollen has done
a really good job with that group. Um, I know,
I'm not. I'm of all the five twelves, that's the one.
I think. I like every other twelve to beat the
five except that one. So I'm I'm I don't love
Mississippi State, but I think they're gonna win that game. Um,
(01:25:48):
Virginia take taken on St. Louis. I know that St.
Louis won the eight ten tournament. They were the preseason pick,
but they lost their top recruiter transferred out. And whereas
I think Virginia Tech, you know, because of just Robinson's injury,
you know, under achieve late. I don't see this being
terribly competitive to you. I don't know, I don't know.
I mean there's also the buzz Williams, A and M stuff. Yeah,
(01:26:10):
that's been how the team engaged, how engaged the team is. Yeah,
and listen, I don't think St. Louis is. They're not
very good offensively, but they got some dudes defensively, and
they're they're gonna be able to match. That's you know,
buzzes brand Doug is kind of like, hey, we're gonna
come up. They do push ups like during the jump
ball and stuff like that. That's kind of their their thing, um,
(01:26:30):
and I think St. Louis gonna be able to match that.
I lean Virginia Tech, but I don't. I don't necessarily
think that games. I think that's one of those like
ugly low scoring grinders. Don't we all do pushups during temple?
I thought that was normal for everybody. Nick Bob joining
us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Okay, Maryland gets the
winner of Belmont Temple. That's the first four game. Um,
I thought the team I would have taken out gladly
(01:26:52):
would have been Temple. But everybody loves fran Dumfrey and
you're like, all right, whatever, And they threw Bellmont a bone,
which I'm not sure Belmont is better than live scum
or UNC Greensboro. But okay, I got I'm I'm I'm
not gonna sit here and and fight that battle because
we've been fighting for the teams like Belmont to get
a shot for a for a long time. Belmont Temple,
Who do you like? I like Belmont? I think uh,
(01:27:14):
I think you know, there's there's definitely holes in there
at what they did. They got swept by Jacksonville State.
They gave up a hundred degree day and a loss.
But I mean, you only lose five games. Join loose
five games, you know. And the and the dude that
took him out was a a you know, top five
pick in Morant. So I like Belmont to win that game.
And I think Belmont's got a shot to beat Maryland too.
I do too. I actually have Belmont beating Maryland in
(01:27:34):
in my in my bracket, Uh, Turps seemed to have
kind of hit a bit of a wall. Plus um
Bruno Bruno Fernando. While he's a good player like Belmont,
I feel like it's going to take him away from
the you know, play five, yeah, and take take away
kind of his powers. L s U Yale, like I
probably think Will Wade's coached his last game. L s
U has plenty of dudes, but Yale's not. There are
(01:27:55):
a lot more talented than people. They feel like they're
underseated and at a fourteen um. Although L s U,
you know, they looked apart when they walk in the gym,
and they have a good point guard in Treymunt Waters.
Who do you like? Yeah? I actually well, first of all,
I loved Waters, and I I really liked L s U.
But you know, Doug, this time of year, all it
takes is for you to get a little bit off
kilter mentally, and you can get picked off in the tournament.
(01:28:18):
And there's no way when you're entering into uncharted territory
where L s U is not in this spot a lot.
They don't have their leader. I don't buy that they're
gonna be totally in the rights frame of mind. And
Yale is top ten nationally and assisted turnover ratio and
l s US big thing is turning you over, getting
a bunch of steels, creating offense like that, I think.
(01:28:39):
I think Yale takes care of the ball. I think
Yale beats l s U in the first round. Doug
Got Live show. You're on Fox Sports Trader. That's the
voice of Nick Bau College Basketball, aalyist also for Fox.
Um Okay, Louisville Minnesota. I've seen Minnesota bunch. They got
a lot of something, but not they don't have a
lot of scoring outside of George Murphy just kind of
finds a way to throw it in. And it's not
(01:29:01):
like Louisville's great um, but Jordan Wara is tremendous um.
I think there are a lot better than Minnesota. I
don't I don't feel like this is a crazy competitive game.
I think Louisville is much better team. And there there
are always a couple of first round games that you
just feel like the coach is gonna create a great plan.
(01:29:23):
And I think Chris mac is the real deal, and
you give him a couple of a couple of days
to repair. I think he's got a great plan against Minnesota.
I like Louisville a lot. Ye meet me too, and
then they get they get another shot against Michigan State,
who they beat earlier this year. All right, let's go
to Syracuse Baylor. Who do you like? I like Syracuse. Um,
I'm a little concerned with battles situation. Um, but you
(01:29:45):
know it's a battle of of two zones there. Um.
I thinking of all by the brutal. I mean that
game is gonna be if there's a game that you like,
Hey man, I'm gonna go take the dog for a walk,
or I'm gonna go at least like putting some FaceTime
with like my wife or something like that. That's probably
gonna be the game. Um. But the good thing with like,
if you're Gonzaga, Doug, how nice is it that you
get what you know? What's mark You're doing all week
(01:30:07):
zone offense. We're working on all of our new pet plays,
all the new sets. Like they're gonna have all week
to work on a zone. They're gonna blast their first
round sixteen seed obviously, and then I think they put
it to whoever they play in the second round, Baylor
or Syracuse. I lean Syracuse, but I don't love either
team there. Marquette Murray State. Uh. At times Marquette struggles
(01:30:28):
with athleticism and Murray State has a lot of athletics.
Says everybody's gonna focus on the point guard battle. Who
do you like? I lean Murray State just because I
think the one thing that when you look at Marquette,
go look at their season, Doug, They've never really faced
adversity and tell all of a sudden, this last skid
and you know it is. It's not not saying that
(01:30:48):
there's a bunch of issues, but it's easy to be
a good teammate and have everything going well when you're winning.
Winning just kind of like suppresses anything that's under the surface.
And they just feel like Marquette doesn't feel like they're
totally right to me right now, and I think Morant
is going to give them big issues. Uh. I lean
Murray State. Any reason to be concerned with your Florida
State taken on Vermont, I don't think so. I mean, man,
(01:31:12):
you you always had the line the all Airport team,
you walked through Chicago hair or something like that, and
you see the Florida State seminoles walking through you like that.
I want I picked those guys in in my bracket, Uh,
Arizona State, St. John's UH two kind of schizo teams. UM.
I do feel like Bobby really gets more out of
(01:31:33):
his group in terms of how hard they play. Although
they didn't play well and against Oregon and they can
throw the ball over the gym. Then he got St.
John's with smy ponds. Who can get, you know, bail out.
He can bail you out of a lot of things.
You've seen the Johnny's a lot. You've seen Arizona State
a lot. Who wins that game? I lean St. John's
just because I think the whole thing with them all
(01:31:54):
year is is how engaged they're going to be. Uh.
And I think whatever they got a tank in terms
of their focus level, it's gonna be at an optimum level.
So they got there. They are really talented group. I
mean they're not very big, but I don't think Arizona
State is gonna be able to exploit that too too much.
And I think guys like Mustafa Heron and LJ. Figueroa
(01:32:15):
are way better than people think. People know about Simon
and Clark to you know, the Arizona and Michigan state transfers.
But I like, I like the Johnnies to beat the
sun Devils Nevada, Florida. Like, man, I love me some Nevada. Uh.
I know they've they have seemed not totally right all year.
I don't know if they've been. There's a part of
me that felt like watching Nevada this year, they just
wanted to fast forward to now that they were just like, listen,
(01:32:38):
let's just get to March. We'll we'll do what we
gotta do. And sometimes that can happen with old teams.
And that's why I admire what Buffalo did this year.
They stayed and locked. They stayed locked in through the process.
Like Buffalo has been super consistent good. Nevada hasn't really been.
But I think there are some teams that can light
switch it. Doug and if Nevada is engaged and locked in,
Nevada is like good enough to go to the final four.
(01:32:59):
To me, I I agree. And what's funny is I
did a show for Stadium and I kind of asked
about how I kind of asked those same questions to
Eric Musselman, and he kind of got a little defense
in ventive, Like we lost. We only lost four games
all year. We played with that Jordan Caroline and we
lost in the in the Mountains term Like, yeah, I know,
but I I would have just thought. I mean, I
can't believe he lost in New Mexico and I lost
(01:33:20):
Utah State and losing in the in the tournament. Um, okay,
you've seen seen Hall bunch, we've both seen I've seen
him as well. We've seen Watford. Two teams. I don't
want to say one man shows, but they both have
incredible When one man shows, who's that game, I'm gonna.
I'm gonna. I've really struggled with this one. I think
Miles Powell has shown a level that he can go
to that is, honestly, Doug as good as any individual
(01:33:44):
level as there is in college basketball right now. I
mean he is uh, he is great. And I think
that Kevin Willard has seemingly pressed all the right buttons.
They're really good in close games, even though they're they're
pretty offensively challenged team. Uh, I mean Seaton Hall. But
that's a game to me, that is is like a
(01:34:04):
literal coin flip. Doug got lip Shore you're on Fox
Sports Trader. That's the voice of Nick ba. All right,
we are running out of time, so I gotta get
I getta Oregan Wisconsin. Who love Oregon, love Oregon way
more athletic team. The matchup zone coach Alman runs will
take away a lot of conventional post ups for for half,
will make things tough for them to do their the
(01:34:25):
swing offense and whatnot. I really like Oregon. I think
Oregan's got a chance to punch through the second weekend.
Really yeah, because because I do think you Shervine has
a chance against Kansas State. Can't State smashed him last year,
but I don't think can State's gonna have Dean Wade.
And if you don't have Dean Wade, there a completely
different team. And that's my thing is whoever is waiting
(01:34:45):
on to the other side. You either got a shorthanded
Kansas State team or Irvine is gonna give Bruce robers
Creel all they can handle. And I mean, I mean
you you're around coach Altman, like he's got those guys
they want what eight in a row, Like he's got
him going a little bit. And you know, Peyton Pritchard's
really I mean, he's gonna he's gonna get those guys
to execute. I don't love this Oregon team, and I
(01:35:07):
really like their matchup. Okay, all right, fair enough, Um
Nova have any trouble with St. Mary's a team that,
granted completely different rosters, but beat them last time they
matched up in the tournament. I mean they're getting some
problems just because I have the most respect for Randy Bennett,
like you know, kind of the Chris mac factor. I
think Randy Bennett is one of the best coaches in
the country, so he's gonna have a plan. And at
(01:35:29):
the end of the day, Nova is pretty boom or
bust with how much they rely on the three. I
mean they're gonna chuck thirty five of them up there
on on Thursday or Friday, whatever game that is. But
I think I think Eric pascal Is is a monster
and I think he's gonna be the difference in the game.
So I like Nova. Great stuff. Nick Bob check out

thanks so much for taking uh time to to join us.
(01:38:19):
We'll get to the n c A tournament momentarily, but
that's an Sprint Center, the Power Light District. Unbelievable atmosphere. Um,
what does somebody who hasn't been there? What does Kansas
City like? Yeah, it's uh, I think I saw you
tweet the other day a response to the Big twelve
just talking about the atmosphere. It's it's as good, if
(01:38:43):
not the best UM conference tournament in the country, especially,
I mean, you've got five teams within five hours of
driving distance, and so the fan base is phenomenal. Kansas
City does an amazing job, and then Kansas Highway State
it's it's it's really almost like fifty fifty in the
place is sold out, you know whatever, nineteen thousand and
it's an incredible atmosphere, and um, there's obviously a lot
(01:39:06):
of fun this weekend and we played well, all right,
So now you get Ohio State and you gotta you
gotta six seed, Like, is it worth having a conversation
over how low your seed is considering how well you
finished in some of the wins this year? Not really.
I mean, you know, you gotta play somebody good. I
was hoping just honously. We struggled the last three weeks. Um,
(01:39:26):
you know, for one reason or another. I think we
got that fixed obviously by the way those guys came
together and played in Kansas City. But I thought when
you look at you know, I don't know, like Quadrant
one wins, how many was did the four seeds have?
How many of the five seeds have? But great thing
is that we couldn't be in the Moines. Tulsa's only
six hours maybe seven from here, and so we can
(01:39:48):
get a great fan base and great turn out there.
And whether it's eleven seed, twelve seed, thirt team seed,
they're all really good. You know. I've been on the
other side as a thirteam where you you beat a
four and how tough to twelve five games are And
so you know Ohio State. You know, we're watching them
right now. I'm in the middle of watching them play
Michigan State right now, and you know, um, those guys
(01:40:10):
will have our attention right away. We're off today and
you know, we don't play until Friday, so we'll get
going with the guys tomorrow. And then how do you
explain you had that that that that kind of brutal
stretch where you lost five out of six And it's
not just that you lost, it's that Look, you guys
don't lose home games, and you started with the loss
to Baylor at home. Um, actually, it's probably started with
(01:40:31):
the TCU loss. And obviously there's some matchup stuff with
tcuhe that they swept you guys, But but what was
wrong and what did you to fix it? You know?
It's uh, you know, we lost the game at home
to TCU, and that was that day selection committee came
out with their first bracket, you know, and we're like
thirteen and on the in the poll, and so you know,
(01:40:52):
once I saw that and we got a one o'clock game, like, man,
we need to go play well and be able to
carry over this, you know, and our guys that thing
came out of eleven or twelve. They probab to even know. Uh,
we really strug against TCU that day. And then we
had a bye week and we went to Kansas State,
played really well and one double figures over there, and
then the Baylor game, you know is it was. It
was a great atmosphere. Monte Morris was back, Fred Hoiberger
(01:41:16):
was back. I mean, we we had a great amosphere
because it was All Star weekend, it was wrapping up
All Star weekend, and man Bailor just physically just pounded us.
And that from that game kind of let into a
struggle to TCU, and then we actually came back, played
Oklahoma well here and then our two road games to
Texas West Virginia were just terrible. That's probably the two
(01:41:38):
games we played the worst of any of them. You know,
Bailor just kind of manhandled us here. We just played
very poorly in credit TCU in West Virginia obviously, but
um though that that was tough. That's when we probably
hit the bottom that hey, guys, we're gonna have to change.
We gotta get back to who we are and we
gotta be selfless, gotta play the right way and then really,
(01:41:58):
you know, offensively, we've been pretty good it all year. Um,
we've got to continue to share the ball and playing transition,
move move move bodies. But defensively we really struggled in
that stretch. I mean our defensive three point field goal
percentage went from thirty two to forty two. Um, but
we're very capable, which if you saw, I think we
had to win some games this weekend on the defensive end.
(01:42:20):
Yeah no, I mean, look that's the Steve, That's that's
the deal of your team, right when those guys guard,
when they're you know, I mean you obviously have guys
who can put the ball in the buck when they
guard and share the basketball. Um, you you have talent
and you create great spacing for your to allow them
to to to play. I guess here's here's there's like
like a double edged kind of question. Right, So you
(01:42:42):
know it is you beat Ku, you win the Big
Tel tournament, you get a bunch of out of boys,
and sometimes all those things aren't great. Two younger kids
who come home like all right, well that means because
I made a couple of buckets and they forget what
got that? What got you that big twelve tournament championship.
You have the first game is a bear, and then
I'm in hell you Houston, either team you played in
(01:43:05):
the second games? Really, you know that that's that's a
tough couple. That's six seed is a tough seed. Um,
how do you get him to to stay locked and
stay at that kind of magical level? Well, I think
they really. It was the most connected we've been all season.
And Mauie was a lot of fun too. But we
didn't have our whole roster and Maui so when you
have a shorter roster, it's obviously easier to be connected.
(01:43:25):
Some guys know they can't play, Guys were injured. We
only had eight guys. Um. But holding the fort right
there is what gave us an opportunity to have a
really good season. You know. But them the moment that
they shared in Kansas City, I think, you know it's
after going through those three weeks because we got pounded
pretty good, you know, to where you're soft, you're not tough,
(01:43:49):
you can't defend. You lost home games, fans are upset.
The media's kind of changed their narrative on us a
little bit. And so these guys collectively and at the
end of the day, the players, players, the ones that
got to do it, and you know, we've got really
good kids, they got high character, We've got really good players,
and I think they decided that, hey, guys, enough enough,
(01:44:10):
let's get back, Let's let's put our You know, everybody
that this level is tough because you've got a lot
of things going on and everybody has big dreams and
goals and aspirations. But you gotta you gotta take care
of where your feet are right now, and and that's
in ames Iowa and represent Iowa State the right way.
And that was the best thing. Like nas Long came
down to the game and he was at the game,
(01:44:30):
been a part of two excuse me, three championship teams fourteen, fifteen,
and seventeen, and you know, he got to talk to
the guys after the game, and um, I think those
guys that they're connected now and I really believe being
around them Sunday yesterday afternoon that they want more. Uh
and having another day arrest today is great so we
can really get back to being tough minded out on
(01:44:52):
the practice floor tomorrow. Stuck outa show Fox Sports for
just t prom head coach of Iowa State and joining
us on Fox Sports Radio. UM. Okay, so when you're
when you're how different is it this year from other
years in terms of your planning, preparation and how you
go about your business. I don't remember playing on Friday,
(01:45:16):
you know, um, the last couple of years. At the
last year obviously we were in the tournament, but the
first two years here I think we may have played
on Thursdays. I can't remember, but playing on Friday, especially
just traveling short distance the Tulfa, it's not as crazy,
you know. Last night, I actually spent a lot of
time watching our offensive edits um from our games in
(01:45:38):
the Big Twelve, just to see if there's anything we
need to adjust how people guarded us UM and and
put some stuff together to show the guys today when
we watch film, because they'll they'll come over here. We'll
watch film today, um, and then and then I'll spend
all day today because we won't actually be on the floor,
really just prepped it for Ohio State and all of
our staff. I'll break up the scouts. Each has a
(01:46:00):
you know, one as George State, one as Houston, one
as Ohio State. But for the first game, everybody on
staff were watching at least a couple of games, so
we all have a great feel for them. And obviously
Chris does a really good job, very good defensively. Caleb
Wesson is a big is a big piece to what
they do in the middle. Um. And then so we'll start,
(01:46:20):
you know, really showing film and talking about those guys
starting tomorrow with film and really on the court Tuesday,
it'll really still be about us because at the end
of the day, like if you've seen us play, it
really is just about us. How are we going to respond?
Are we going to defend the right way? Are we
going to compete defensively and then offensively? Can we space
and share the ball the right way? And if we
do that, we give the gusels a great opportunity to
(01:46:43):
beat a lot of people. Do you even look at
the at the rest of the bracket, like, do you
have any idea what's what's beyond? Uh this weekend? You
know what. I've talked to my wife last night about
the bracket because she's a she's a basketball junkie, and uh,
she was like, man, I think we've got the toughest
bracket and uh, and then I saw then I kind
(01:47:04):
of looked and I was like me, in Carolina's a one,
Kentucky's are too, Houston's and three, And I said, man,
you're right. I said, you know, if you're able to advance,
which you don't really talk about too much obviously because
it's one game at a time, I mean, you'd have
to beat four really really really good basketball teams, but
that's you gotta beat somebody good to move on and
uh in this tournament. And so I think we got
(01:47:26):
a great bracket. Um Houston obviously he had a phenomenal year,
and then Georgia State Ron Hunter has done an amazing
job there. Yeah, i'd agree your favorite n c A
tournament memory as a kid, oh man, But I have
a couple. Uh probably the first time I ever you know,
does the first National Championship game, uh, NC State and Houston.
(01:47:50):
I had to go to bed, so you know, you
sneak out the black and white TV and I snuck
into my brother's room and and watched that and my
actually my uh, I actually got an email my by
buddy grew up with back when I was in Northern Virginia.
His dad played at NC State in the seventies on
on that National championship team and he was our like
youth league coach, and so you know, when they hit
(01:48:12):
the shot, he jumped up in his basement and uh
shattered delight and cut his hand. And after they won
the national championship, he had to go to hospital and
get stitches. And then the next year Georgetown Villanova. I
guess that would have been eighty four um or eighty
five Georgetown beat Houston and eighty four, uh, the power
(01:48:32):
went out and where we lived in Virginia, so it's
poorn rain, it's Georgetown. You know, that school's thirty minutes away,
and so I had to listen to that game on
the radio. Um. But and then obviously being a part
of a buzzer beater. You know, when I was at
Murray State as an assistant, we beat Vanderbilt on the
narrow Thomas's last second shot. That was obviously a cool
(01:48:54):
memory as well. But you know, one shining moment. I
mean that that whole deal. I'm like, you know, I'm
a junkie from a kid, you know, you know, I
love it, and so to be a part of it,
it's it's it's really a blessing. Mary Chak is a
uh um he's a Julius Irving Award finalist. I vote
for the award, and it's got to be a mixed
bag for him, right, because he transferred from Virginia and
(01:49:16):
he was on the Virginia team, not obviously last year's
but the one that they had Syracuse dead beaten, right,
and then just just just imploded. Um, how much how
much of that do you call upon, like his memories,
his leadership, his experience with some of these other young guys,
many of whom have not played in the tournament. Yeah,
(01:49:38):
you know, Um, he's been phenomenal and he's he's definitely
well well deserving of that that award and if he's
able to win that. Um, you know, they beat us
to go to you know, they beat us in the
sweet sixteen that year. Um, and then um, and then
obviously the Syracuse game was was unbelievable. I felt felt
(01:49:59):
bad for the first for them. But you know, he's
been been I've been a rock all season. I mean,
he's close to fifty from the field, forty from three,
ninety from the line. And obviously, Virginia's Tony Bennett's one
of the elite coaches, if not one of the the top
five coaches in the country. But obviously they play a
little slower. We play a little faster, and so your
numbers are gonna be be more here. Um. But what
(01:50:21):
he's been able to do, his efficiency, his leadership, his
work ethic, his character. Man, it's been off the charts
and um, you know, um, you know, to leave Virginia
had to be tough, because I mean they had an
unbelievable run and they're still having an unbelievable run. But
to come here and be part of the Big twelve
Championship the other day and and really get us back
(01:50:42):
where we need to be after a damnue last year's
has been huge. And he's been a major major key.
You know, he's I thought he'd beat good for us,
but but he's checked all the boxes and really really
maxed out and you know, he's been doing a lade eight.
You know, he's like I talked about all the time,
he's wanted duke and you want an a CC tournament,
all that stuff, and so his experience is huge. But
(01:51:04):
because him and Nick bab are the only really guys
on our team, because that stub late tournament, because if
you really look at our ross or root we were
really young. You know, we've got a lot of freshman sophomores,
and now we've got some guys that you know, may
have decisions to make at some point, you know, have
opportunities down the road. But we are a youthful. But
I think it's a good thing because those guys, man,
(01:51:24):
they just go play and they have a lot of
fun with it. Great stuff, man. I really appreciate you
join us. I wish you safe travels and the best
select this weekend. Hopefully we talked to you next weekend.
Hitting the Sweet sixteen. Yeah, definitely, thanks Doug. All right,
pleasures all mine. It's Steve prom Let's get you to
Dan Buyer and get an update on these women's brackets
which are being revealed. Doug, the number one seed. Jeez,
(01:51:46):
I should have been prepared a little bit, a little
bit more. Didn't know you're gonna throw me that that curveball.
And I don't want to bring out or put out
wrong information, so I'll have it for you, uh in
just a moment. I first want to tell you this.
Dave Gentleman speaking today about his quarterback Eli Manning on
a conference call, and Gettleman had this to say, this narrative,
(01:52:06):
dead elis old. The Payne can't play is a croc.
If you turn around, you take a look at what
he's making right now, look around the league and see
what quarterbacks are making the way he finished the season
and what he's making. There really wasn't a decision to make.
That was the Giants GM sticking up for his quarterback. Now,
free agent wide receiver Jordy Nelson is going to visit
the Seahawks. According to the NFL Network, Nelson's former teammate
(01:52:30):
in Green Bay, Randall Cobb, well that free agent wide
receiver is going to talk with the Dallas Cowboys. Vener
in defensive lineman Hellodi Nada announced he's retiring from the
NFL after thirteen seasons, making the announcement from Mount Kilimanjaro.
Overland Park Police confirmed to the Kansas City Star that
they're investigating two alleged incidents of abuse involving Chief's wide
receiver Tyree Hill. That's abuse of a juvenile. One of
(01:52:53):
the reports came public late last week. Another was dated
on March fifth, involving child abuse or neglect. Should be
noted that Hill has not been charged or arrested in
the Matter. Warriors forward Kevin Durant's gonna return from his
ankle injury and play tonight against San Antonio. No DeMarcus
Cousins or andre Igodala Raptors without Kauai Leonard and Kyle
Lowry for tonight's game against the Knicks. Baylor the number
(01:53:16):
one overall seed in the n C Double A Women's Tournament.
Louisville gets a number one seed in the Albany region.
So you've got that, Doug, and we'll have Did you
go Albany? Yeah, it was it Albany, Yeah, Albany. My bad.
It's like when it's like when East Coast guy says Oregon. Yeah,
well there's there's a town in Wisconsin. Actually, the hometown
(01:53:37):
of Shock is Smart. It's pronounced Oregon, Wisconsin, yes, but yeah,
the state is Oregon. Yes, So I'm sorry. I apologize
to Albany. It's like in Oklahoma, Durant, Oklahoma, Durant, Oak
Spell like Durant. Simple enough. Hey, we'll be back with

what he got now. Nebraska d Bill Mooses said that
(01:55:23):
they're not He's not going to address the Nebraska basketball
program's head coaching position until after their run is done
in the postseason. They're going to the n I T
to Miles, currently the coach, but maybe not for long.
That's because Stadium's Jeff Goodman reports Fred Hoiberg would be
the front runner for the Nebraska job if Miles has
let go. Yeah, I mean, like, look, I also think
(01:55:46):
Dane Altman will get a call. Uh, he's from Nebraska,
from Wilburn, Nebraska. We talked about this in my podcast
a couple weeks ago actually with nickbab who's from Lincoln, Nebraska.
But yeah, I mean, look, just because they're gonna go
after Fred Hoiberg doesn't mean he's going to take it.
But Fred hoiberg style of coaching uh and his style
of recruiting recruiting transfers works in Nebraska and who have
(01:56:06):
been giving plenty of time and great facilities. And he's
in you know, he's from Ames, Iowa, so he's a
Midwestern guy. That part makes sense. I'm not sure if Lincoln,
Nebraska makes sense. We'll see now. Baylor is the number
one overall seed in the women's tournament. Baylor, Louisville, Notre
Dame in Mississippi state getting the one seeds. Yes, No,
Yukon as a number one seed in the women's bracket.
(01:56:29):
They are a two seed. And if you're saying to yourself,
wait a second, the weirdest thing ever. Yeah, yeah, that's weird.
But if you're saying yourself, wait a second, I thought
the bracket was gonna be released tonight at seven o'clock
Eastern time. Well, ESPN accidentally revealed the women's bracket on
ESPN you earlier today. Graphics for the bracket were aired
during a replay of last night's bracket show, so the
(01:56:51):
network of the n C double A moved up the
time of the release because of the error. Oops. I
want to know who the who the graphics producer is
and I want him now. I want butts all right, yes,
third prize is definitely you're fired. Somebody getting fired. You
(01:57:12):
know what, though, it actually has created a little bit
of buzz around the women's Unfortunately it won't rate at
all because no one knew it was coming. Sure, the
sponsors aren't happy, but it did create a little bit
of buzz. Otherwise I wouldn't have even known the selection
show didn't actually exist when it's supposed to exist. They had,
they had a graphic was taken or a picture of
the graphics. So it was Dick Fatal talking about the
(01:57:35):
men's bracket. Yeah, I know, but the listeners, I'm sorry,
I just want to fill them in. Yeah, so they're
they're replaying their bracketology show, and then all of a
sudden you look at the brackets. You're like, wait a second,
those aren't the men's brackets. Why is South Dakota State
playing Quinnipiac in Syracuse, New York, which I asked, how
many people are going to and like, look, I get
(01:57:55):
I'm sure the Feminazis are coming after me like I'm
I'm like no, it's just look, it's hard enough to
get to Syracuse, New York for a tournament game anyway.
Quinnipiac is in outside the Haven, which is oh I
think a four and a half hour drive, and then
you know South Dakota States more than a four and
a half hour flight away. It's just one of those
(01:58:16):
deals where you start to realize why the old regional
finals and keeping teams in their region existed back in
the day. For the men's tournament, there's just logistics to it,
and you can't get anybody in a building. Are they
gonna play that in the Dome? Are they playing that
in the dome or another arena in Syracuse? Um, I
would assume, I don't know. I honestly, I would assume
(01:58:39):
that you had played in the Carrier Dome, but I
could be wrong. Notre Dame, by the way, you know,
as they mentioned the number one seed, if you thought
it was the men's bracket, and you're like, jeez, Notre
Dame was dead last of the a SEC and men's
you have to get a number one seed? Was the
women's practice being revealed by the way Tennessee got in
and they have been in every turn na mint since
(01:59:00):
it started in just barely they got an eleven seed.
But the lady Vols are dancing, Hey, let's hear more
from Dave, gentleman, why not trust me? We got a
plan and over time, you know, you've got to be patient.
You know everybody wants the answers. Now we live in
a instant gratification society. Over time, you'll say it. You
(01:59:21):
gotta trust it. GM talking and GM of the Giants
talking about the moves to trade Odell Beckham Jr. And
keep you lie Manning as this quarterback. I love that
he What was the line he said? Like people think
that he's what and overpaid? He's uh, he's overprod. He's
over the hill and overpaid, and then he goes into
the hole like he's not making that much money, Like, oh,
(01:59:42):
so he is over the hill, he's just not overpaid.
Let's hear more, gentlemen. This narratives over paid, can't play
is a croc. If you turn around, you take a
look at what he's making right now, look around the
league and see what quarterbacks are making the way he
finished the season and what he's making. It really wasn't
a decision. Listen, he's not making much money even though
(02:00:05):
he stinks, so he can't play, But at least he's
not overplayed. For me can't play. The Sloan Sports Analytics
Conference awarded the Raiders with the best Transaction of the
Year award in all of Pro sports for their trade
of Khalil Mack to the Chicago Bears. Thank you, thank you,
(02:00:28):
thank you. I want I want honest answers here, Ryan Music.
Did anyone anyone other than me at Fox Sports Radio
say that was a great trade by the Raiders at
the time. I can't speak for every single host, but
the Colin Cowherd's, the Dampian Patricks. Yeah, all of that group. Uh,
(02:00:54):
maybe the I don't think the I think the odd
coupled Cris brussor Rob Parker. I think they also thought
it was a terrible deal. Yeah, I'm happy as hell.
A report from one of six point seven The Fan
in d C says Redskins head coach Jake Gruten found
out about the team signing of safety Landed Collins through
the media. Redskins are denying that report. What happened with
(02:01:18):
l Yeah, I'm sorry, Lebron James interrupted, Yeah, they went
away till the story has done. Lebron? What what six okay, alright?
What was six point seven? The fan in d C
says that Redskins coach Jay Gruden found out about the
team signing of safety land And Collins through the media,
that the media alerted him that they were signing Landed Collins.
(02:01:40):
That's it's not great. Oh hey, by the way, we're
signing Landing Collins. He's gonna be your safety. These Cincinnati
Bengals released linebacker Vontes Burfickts, who amassed more than four
hundred thousand dollars worth of fines in his career in Cincinnati.
You know, look, there's there's guys that are borderline dirty,
and obviously most people believe he is a borderline dirty too,
(02:02:01):
maybe somewhat dirty player, um, but he also was a
fierce competitor, hard hitter. He just he'd lost probably a
step war two in the last year and that's why
he lost his gig, not because of any of the
fines he sustained. A couple of baseball notes, each r
O will be in the starting lineup for the Mariners
when they opened the season Wednesday morning in Tokyo against
the A's. He's hitting point oh eighty so far this
(02:02:25):
spring and Ken Rosen eight each year, oh yes, each year?
Oh eight? Ken Rosenthal Fox sports and the athletics is
the Padres and Indians are talking trade on Corey Kluber
or Trevor Bauer, but the asking price remains high for
San Diego and a trade right now is not close,
(02:02:45):
not close. And that's pressed it out there and pressed
that the press pots trying to be a legitimate this year, right,
if you're gonna try and get one or two of
those arms for Cleveland, they're trying to be legit, but
not just signed Manny Machado and uh and who they
signed last year? Not gonna stock us right, uh hosper
And it was a form of royal alright. Uh So
