(00:42):
One of the best coaches, just basketball coaches in the
country is Dana Altman. His Oregon Ducks just won the
Pack twelve Tournament after what I would think would be
a relatively disappointing regular season for the most part. Suddenly
at the end of the year, in spite of the
fact that they lost their star freshman Bowl Bull for
the entire season, they figured it out and played far

(01:05):
away their best basketball of the year. How they do
it well last Dana all mean he's gonna join us
upcoming in fifteen minutes. Peter Vessey is gonna join us
next hour. Longtime NBA insider. His story, which of course
has made the rounds, is that Doc Rivers might be
the next head coach of the l A Lakers. Chris
Haynes will join us. Another NBA inside from Yahoo Sports
and Tom Burdoch. She will join us in the third

(01:27):
and final hour of the show, and we'll talk about
what I want to talk about the start of the show,
which is Mike Trout. Now full disclosure, Ryan Music and I,
I believe are the first and only Angel fans in
the history of National sports radio. And also full disclosure,
I live very in a similar area um proximity wise,

(01:51):
not neighborhood to where Mike Trout lives. Some of the
restaurants that I've been in, I've seen him and his
wife and his buddies in. And one of the great
misconceptions of Mike Trout is that he wasn't making anything
right now and the Angels um tore up his deal
before it could have reached arbitration. And he actually makes

(02:14):
thirty two million dollars this year, and of course by
now I'm sure you've heard the new twelve year extension
will pay him a whopping and record setting four hundred
and thirty million dollars and so wow. And while look,
I've never been a proponent of long term deals, and

(02:35):
I don't love the Bryce Harper long term deal. More
for Bryce Harper actually considering what was reportedly offered to
him by the l A Dodgers, which is in the
in the low forties per year for four years guaranteed, Like, dude,
that's enough money and you'd still be on this side
of thirty and you can still get another deal. But

(02:59):
but the reread of losing Trout was real because well,
he's from Jersey, grew up a Yankees fan and a
Philly sports fan, and so you have the Phillies, who
have their own network, have deep, deep pockets, and they
positioned themselves with Bryce Harper to still have money to
throw at Mike Trout. That was that was not a bluff.

(03:21):
They were coming at Trout. And the Yankees are in
position to go after Trout. And we haven't even thought
about the possibility of the Red Sox, who have been
willing to spend whatever it takes Mike Trout is, without
anybody's question, the best player in the sport, and that's
what the best player in the sport commands if he
signs a contract that takes him through his prime years

(03:46):
and off into the sunset. I don't think there was
a hometown discount. I do think there was some negotiating
that could have taken place. But whatever it is, Mike
Trout's an angel. And when you consider the fact again,
this is almost of those deals don't make sense, right.
Like for the Phillies, they're kind of already on the
path to being good, right They they already they have

(04:08):
some talented young players, they do, and you feel like
they're not that far away. I'm not sure that that
Bryce Harper puts them over the hump, but they're not
that far away, right Um. And the Phillies have they
have a stadium which is is it's not brand new,

(04:31):
but it's not old, and they make a ton of
money on it. They have a TV network that they
make a ton of money on. The Yankees, of course
have they S network which was just sold and then repurchased,
and they make gobs and gobs of money. They already
have their new stadium, the Red Sox aren't moving. They
already have nesson, they already make money. The Angels don't

(04:53):
really have the same ability. They don't own their own
TV network as of yet, although my guests would be
they they buy part of Fox Sports West and turned
into the Angels Network. Right now, it's more of a
partnership deal. They make money on, but it's not what
they do. They don't have what the Dodgers have, and
they don't have a stadium that the Dodgers have. The

(05:14):
Angels have to overpay even for a hometown kid because
the threat of losing him to Philly or New York
is real, and the only way in which they'll get
a new stadium is if they have Mike Trout. And
the only way in which anybody will ever pay a
penny to watch their games on their own network is
if they have Mike Trout. So while these deals traditionally

(05:35):
don't live up to their value when we see what
the Angels, Albert Poole is playing way passes prime playing
for way too much money, the fact is that this
deal is signed well before Albert Poole signed his deal,
and because of the financial issues in front of the Angels. Look,
you can't go to Anaheim and the Long Beach and

(05:55):
the Tustan. These are different cities in southern California and say, hey,
be old me a five million dollar brand new stadium.
You can't do that unless they say why why would
I do that? And your answer has to be we
got Mike Trout right, Like Andrew Haney is supposed to
be the opening day starter for the Angels. I don't

(06:16):
know how many to know this Oklahoma state guy, great
dude um and he's a year removed from Tommy John
surgery and he's had elbow issues, elbow discomfort in spring training,
like they signed Matt Harvey, who is trying to recapture
the luster of his career. They are not They're not
where the Nationals are. They're not where the Yankees are,

(06:39):
they're not where the Dodgers are. They're not where the
Red Sox are. And so you can't even sell him on.
They don't have the farm system, even of the padres
where you can tell Manny Machado, hey man, this year
might be a little bit rough, but help is on
the way. That's not think the Angels are not there.
They're just kind of a team that that honestly has

(07:01):
overachieved based upon the litany of injuries. Basically any starter
they had of the last two years had some sort
of injury. It's crazy. So normally I'll sit here and
it's not because it's my team, it's because try to
have him over a barrel. Had him over a barrel.
He'd done everything the right way. And with the exception

(07:22):
of I think it was not last year the year before,
where he had he only played like a hundred fourteen games.
He plays usually a hundred fifty some odd games. He's,
without any question the best player in baseball. And oh yeah,
by the way, he's getting better. The way in which
he plays baseball fits the two two and even longer.

(07:44):
And the sale from the Yankees, the Red Sox, the
the Nationals, the Phillies, the Dodgers is not just hey,
you can move back to the East Coast or to
a bigger team in l A. But we we have
our own network and and oh yeah, but we have
a better team. The Angels have none of this, So

(08:10):
they had to pay the best player in the sport
above any sort of market rate. And believe it or not,
believe it or not, um, I actually think it's a
really good deal for the Angels because now you go,
hey in center field is gonna be there for the
next eight years. And oh yeah, by the way, they're

(08:32):
also in the American League, and as long as they
have the d H, you know he can he can
d H on some days as well, which it makes
the Bryce Harper deal make a little bit less sense.
So and you know, like the crazy thing about Trout
is he not a guy that even needs that kind
of money. But who's gonna turn it down? Right? Who's

(08:54):
gonna turn it down? Stuck Gotli show on Fox Sports Radio.
Quick aside, And this does relate to Mike Out? Um, Ramos,
have you ever been to a game where Mike Trout plays?
Your Dodger fan? Have you ever been to a Dodge Raine? Yes?
I have? Um, okay, so you can tell me if
this is true? Buy or have you? And I know
Dan's super busy because he's doing a bunch of different stuff,

(09:16):
um by or have you been to a game where
Mike Trout plays? Yes? Okay, let me start with you, Ramos,
Um anything stick out to you at all about Trout
other than he's really good. I seem very friendly with
the fans, like he's very uh you know, people are
He's very accessible when he's on the field, whether it's
you know, saying hi or autographs things like that. Well

(09:39):
I would say this, and byro you you know you
and Ramos, you guys have been a ton of games,
so maybe you can and music. I know you know this,
We've discussed it. There's a completely different energy in the
park when he's up there. Just is he just he's
a force multiplier. He's Baseball is dull and can be boring.
But when Mike Trout and I understand he's not doing

(10:00):
he's not Steph Curry shooting making a three quarter court
shot like he did last night, but there's a certain
joy like Steph Curry well, which he plays and it
actually translates by or my am I over selling it
again because I'm a I'm a fan of the team. No,
and it's it's and and to your point, I just

(10:21):
looked at it as he was the only guy that
resonated with fans, like you know, even Albert Pool holes
is applause was subdued compared to what would happen when
Mike Trout would go to the plate and then everybody
else was basically the same. It's been a couple of
years since I've been to, uh, the Big Game, but yeah,
it is different. Yeah, no, I mean, um, would you

(10:41):
say music, would you say, is that is that accurate?
I mean, he've obviously been more Angel games than both
these guys. Oh yeah, definitely. Um. I think the way
Dan explained it was great that the fact there there's
a lot of parts that go into it, but the
fact that Trout has always been an Angel as opposed
to you know, Pools is great, and he hit some
of those or home run number five and whatever, but um,

(11:04):
it's always just been different with Trout as opposed to
some of the other quote unquote stars that they've tried
to bring in over the past six years. Yeah. No, no,
no question, no question. Uh. And being homegrown, I think
is part of it. But a lot of it is
just his personality. And today is my son's tenth birtha,
my son Hays. And the way in which Trout kind
of makes you feel watching baseball, honestly is that's one

(11:27):
of the things my guy has is just this ability
to translate like joy and fun and happiness and excitement
over whatever is coming up next. So happy birthday to
my son and congratulations to Mike trout It. It's obviously
a huge investment for the Angels. Oregon head coach Dan
Altman joins the show. Next, how did they do this?

Fox Sports Radio getting ready for h first four games
are tonight. Doesn't like look, doesn't really feel like it's
part of the tournament. But having done the first four,

(13:16):
um still really really cool. I mean, still super cool
to do. I've I've done those games. I think I
did the the best first four game ever. Again, that's
very very much subjective. But when I did the first four,
it was, uh, Dayton, who the games are in Dayton
playing against Boise State, And there was a lot of
controversy whether or not, you know, Dayton should have been

(13:37):
in the let alone in the first four or been
able to play at home in that game, but they
did and uh they won, and then we followed them
to Columbus, where, of course there are games again in
Columbus this year, so we'll get a chance season first
four games and given my give you my picks before
those games take place. Our next guest is um as

(13:59):
respect to coach, just a basketball coach as there is
anywhere in the country. Five out the last six years
they made the n c A Tournament. And go back
to two thousand and seventeen, he took the Ducks to
the Final four, his first final four UH during his
tenure as a coach. Go back to k State when
they UH they went to an e leade aid Craighton
and and and out Oregon. He's Dane Altman who UH

(14:22):
this season has turned around in a hurry, in fantastic fashion,
and they just won the Pack twelve Tournament championship to
get in the n A. Determined to take on with
Wisconsin in San Joseani joins us on Fox Sports Radio. Coach,
how are you? How are you doing good? UM? Sorry,
we needn't get a chance to work out before one
of your games this year. Usually that's that's good luck

(14:42):
to you. UM. Coming into the year, what was you
had a you had a different roster, right, you had
Bowl Ball, the Star freshman things were. What did you
think your team would look like in March when you
had your team on the floor for the first time
in November. Well, when we started practice October first, I
was really excited about her team. Bull bowls a unique

(15:04):
talent um, you know, and he was really working with
guys and working with the team, and you know, as
a coaching staff, you're really excited about finding different ways
to to use a unique talent like that, and so,
you know, we were really excited as a coaching daff.
We knew that Louis King and other talented freshman would
be joining this you know, somewhere in December after recovering

(15:26):
from some knee surgery, and so you know, we were
very excited, very optimistic. Peyton pictured back at the point
and Paul White's good player, Kenny Luton can block shots. Um,
so we're pretty excited that really good class of freshman
coming in and I thought that we would, you know,
right from the store, be a Previere ball club. But

(15:47):
you know, Lewis didn't get back until about ten games
into the season, and right when we got him back,
Bull went down and and was going for the season. Um,
you know, a couple of games later, Kenny Luton broke
his jaw at Baylor and was out for a month.
Right when he got back, Paul White sprains his ankle,
and uh, you know he's he's not effective, you know,

(16:10):
for three weeks, four weeks, and so you know, it's
kind of one thing after another. But now we're healthy
and we're playing much better. But to answer your question,
I really was looking forward to the year that I
thought we're going to be pretty good. You know, a
lot of new faces, which is always you know, trying
to blend everybody together. It's always difficult and you never
know how it's gonna come out. But I sure liked

(16:30):
our talent level. I thought. I thought rock Bottom was
was the the l a trip you know you got.
You lost to Oregan State. You had three game three,
three road games in a a row. It's really hard from
college kids, aren't aren't used to know the pack twelve.
You have back to back road games to have three
in a row, and you lost all three. But then
you turn around and you you smashed Arizona State, who's

(16:51):
a good club. Obviously they're they're playing in the first four.
And Peyton, who hadn't had a great year, a guy
who you know, who played so much in your final
four team, Peyton seemed to personally turn around, and the
team seemed to figure out what change in that Arizona
State game. Going back couple weeks ago, Well, Doug, you're
familiar with our team, and you're right, Uh, rock bottom

(17:13):
was the l A trip. We played very poorly at
usc UM and then gave up a big halftime league
in u C. L A. And uh, you know, we
we were struggling. We were fifteen and twelve and not
playing very well. We came home the next week beat
Arizona State and Arizona by six, and guys kind of

(17:34):
got their heads up. Go to Washington Schools and win
on the road and uh, you know, beat the league
camp Washington and you know at their place, which is
it's tough to do. It's hard to win in Seattle,
and uh, and then win four games in the tournament.
So we definitely did turn around. Peyton was a big
part of that. You know, point guard play is is

(17:55):
so important, and you know he was trying so hard
during the season. You know, did do so many things.
I think he put tremendous pressure on himself, which you know,
there's such a fine line there about demanding something from
yourself but putting too much pressure on yourself, and he
just freed up and started playing, and he was tremendous
in the pactual tournament. He unbelievable, his most valuable player,

(18:18):
and he definitely you know, warned us or helped us
win those four games and four days. All Right, So
now you have uh. Now you have Wisconsin, and they're
a really unique like your personal style, the mixing matchups
of defense and the different pressures so it's your offensive
now is different. But Wisconsin terms of their personnel is unique.

(18:38):
They have Ethan Happ, a senior who he's like a
point center. You know, they play through him and he
goes one on one and if you help, he's a
very good passer. But then unlike so many college players,
he can really score a low post. Now you have
a kid and and I don't know how many people
have seen Kenny Wootton play. He's not Jordan's bell because
I felt like Jordan had maybe a better motor than Kenny,

(19:00):
but he has some similarities in his incredible length, incredible
timing as a shot blocker. Um, that's the matchup. I'm
most fascinated in. What's it like to prepare for Wisconsin?
And this unique player and Ethan have well. Ethan is
a unique player. Average is almost five assists the game
and conference play. So you're analogy or point forward or

(19:21):
points in or whatever is is pretty good because you know,
almost five assists a game. Um, remarkable for a big guy.
And he is a very good pastor. When he kind
of double team him down the post, he gets rid
of it so quick as instincts. You're good. Um, he
can handle the ball. Uh. You know, he scores really
well around the basket. He gets guys off the feet.

(19:41):
You know, the only thing he doesn't do is shoot
free throws real well. So, um, he is an awfully
good player. We will have our hands full with him.
And you're right. Their style you know there real happy
scoring low sixties and and trying to hold you to sixty.
You know it's uh uh very deliberate style. Uh. And

(20:02):
we have recent experience with him, Doug. We played him
in Milwaukee and uh two round and thirty two we
were seven seed, they were two and lost close one there.
And then the next year in Omahall they were one
and we were in eight and played him again and
lost another close one. So we've played him a couple
of times here recently and know that style. It is

(20:26):
very difficult to play against. There's really no one in
the Pact well who plays that type of style, So
it's a little different. Dana Alban joining us in the
Doug Outlives show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, do you
take any special pride in your team's ability to dig
out from this whole? Like, you know, you've had years
where and look you've had You've had a bunch of

(20:47):
different seasons. Why they're at Craighton, you know, at Case
State and here here at Oregon. But is there any
special pride in like, hey, real coaching is hitt and
rock bottom and not hidding rock bottom in November December
and we're talking in the FEBUARYUS, Like February I think
was the U c l A game. Is there any
special pride you take in like, hey, we might not
get to the final four, but to dig out and

(21:07):
to do what we've done that that that's that's what
I want to people to think that we're about. Well,
I'm absolutely proud of the guys, Doug. I mean, they
could have stopped working with me, and uh, you know
we were on them pretty good. They could have you
know they could just say coach, or we've had enough,

(21:27):
and they didn't. You know, they showed some resolves and uh,
some character there and and digging out. And uh, I
am proud of them for that because you know, you
judged on how you face adversity and you handle that
adversity and things weren't going well for us, and you know,
they fought through it. So I am very happy and

(21:50):
very pleased for them because of that. And and I
just hope they're not satisfied. I'd like to play a
little bit more there. There's been a lot of fun
to work with this last month, and I sure hoping
we can play a little longer. Uh, really quickly on Peyton,
Peyton Pittchard who uh this his third year there and
uh he he's had to carry you and as of

(22:11):
late he has and he was just he's been just magnificent,
especially um in Las Vegas. Um. What you've You've had
a lot of good ones, right we you and I
always talked about Ryan Sears, who's like your prototype for
how you want to lead and how you want to
play within your system. What have you noticed in Peyton,
a guy who wasn't having a great year and how

(22:31):
he personally has been able to fix things. No, I'm
I'm really pleased and really excited for Peyton because he
showed what he could do. You know, this last three weeks,
he he led our team short, tremendous energy and um
even in a couple of ball games and things weren't
going well for him, he really fought it and and

(22:52):
uh kept that leadership and that energy, positive energy going
and uh so I really impressed with his leadership, the
way he played. Uh and just as energy, you know, Layton,
and in the year, energy is so important. You know,
some teams kind of give in to it. It's it's
a six month grind when you figure October first to

(23:12):
start practice and we're coming up on six months here,
you know, with with April one, So you know, a
lot of teams give into it and they don't have
that energy late. But Peyton provided that for us. And
you had some help. We had some freshman Francis of
Kora and some guys who really really helped out and
provide a lot of energy. But Painting was definitely the leader. Yeah,

(23:33):
and you mentioned Louis King, who of course has ridiculous
length and has an amazing future ahead of him. Well listen,
uh safe travels to San Jose. Best of luck against Wisconsin.
Badgers are a tournament tested team. Although this group didn't
play in the tournament last year as didn't you, guys,
but they've obviously been there and been to the heights
of the tournament as have you. Wish you nothing but
success in congratulations on what has been a fantastic turnaround, coach.

(23:56):
I sure appreciated Doug, and we look forward to Friday.
Thank all right. That's Dana Altman, head coach of the
organ Ducks. As I tweeted out, as I tweeted out,
he will, he'll, he'll beat you with his and then
take yours and beat your beat, beat his with yours,
Like that's that's exactly how that's exactly how good a
basketball coach he is. Doug Gotland Hill Rose on Fox

(24:18):
Sports Rader. Let's get you to Dan buyer Dan when
he got Doug. A bunch of is going on. Of course,
the big news of the day is the reported deal
for Mike Trout ESPN saying it's a twelve year contract
with four hundred and thirty million dollars, as it would
be the largest in baseball history, both on an annual
basis and in total value, and that twelve year deal
would go through twenty thirty again twelve years, four hundred

(24:39):
and thirty million dollars for Mike Trout. The Detroit Tiger
say picture Michael Fullmer is going to seek a third
opinion on his injured elbow. It was Dr James Andrews
second opinion that recommended Tommy John surgery for Fulmer, which
would cost him the entire twenty nineteen season and possibly
some of twenty twenty college basketball first four. The n
c Double A Tournament tonight in Dayton, Prairie View, A

(25:01):
and M takes on Fairley Dickinson. Winner gets Gonzaga on Thursday,
while Temple and Belmont will play tonight, with the winner
getting Maryland in two days. Kyler Murray is meeting with
the Arizona Cardinals today on the campus of the University
of Oklahoma. University that is, as Murray is in contention
for that first overall pick. The NFL Network says the

(25:22):
Cowboys and Dolphins are in trade talks that would send
defensive end Robert Quinton Dallas. Prosecutors in Florida reportedly made
an offer to drop prostitution charges against Patriots owner Robert
Kraft and others. But there's a catch. The Wall Street
Journal says those charged would have to admit that they
would have been proven guilty yet trial to soliciting a prostitute.
News just in from College Football Stadium is reporting a

(25:43):
quarterback tape Martel has been granted a hardship waiver that
would make him eligible or make him immediately eligible to
play for the Miami Hurricanes this fall. No lebron tonight
for the Lakers against the Bucks out with a groin injury.
Jannice isn't gonna play for Milwaukee as Intedacoopo was out
within a inc injury. Will be back to the Doug
Gotlip Show in ten seconds, But first a word from

farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know every windshield collision has
a unique sound. Beetle bird boop, drone seen it, covered it,
dr Farmers were farmers underwritten my Farmers to fire Insurance
Exchange and affiliates products unavailable in every state. Doug Gotlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. This is from Charles

(26:23):
Robinson um and Charles Robinson is um uh and from
Yahoo Sports NFL insider Um. It's again his Twitter account.
The NFL evals on the quarterback class, that's this year's
quarterback class are all over the map. Um not wildly unusual,
he goes on, but even the top guys Kyler Murray,

(26:46):
Dwayne Haskins Missouri Drew Lock carries some conflicting opinions. Don't
be surprised if either Haskins or Lock experience a mini slide.
Remember the draft order as of now are the Cardinals,
the Niners, the Jets, the Raiders, the Buccaneers, the Giants,
the Jaguars, the Lions, the Bills, Broncos, Bengals, Packers, Dolphins, Falcons.

(27:14):
Here's what I want you to remember. One last year's
draft class was considered better like none of these. I
don't believe any of the top three guys Lock, who's
a spectacular all around athlete, Dwayne Haskins, who's a tremendous
pocket passer, and Kyler Murray, who's a freak but really
really small, would be among the top three or maybe

(27:35):
four quarterbacks Like Josh Allen is a physical freak who
lacks accuracy. That's he would probably still be a higher
rated quarterback than either of the other three, mostly just
because of the size of Murray, And then of course
you have Rosen, you have Baker Mayfield, and you have
Sam Donalds. So I think part of it is that

(28:00):
just because these are the only three quarterbacks available does
not mean all of these teams are suddenly well somebody
will overvalue them in comparison to the field. But we
also have to look at this, what jobs are available.
Do I think the Arizona Cardinals are gonna take Cayla Murray?
I tend to believe there's so much smoke there's got

(28:21):
to be fired. The answers, yes, But if they don't,
Niners don't need a quarterback, Jets don't need a quarterback.
Now there's the Raiders are in love with Cayla Murray. Yeah,
but they still have Derek Carr for another year. Next
year's quarterback classes said to be better. The Buccaneers are
pot committed to Jamis Winston. Well, the Giants need a quarterback,
but last year they didn't like what they saw for

(28:41):
whatever reason. Like the running back better and Dave Gentleman
is beat to his own drums, so do they need
to take him? Take somebody at six? The Jaguars just
spent a bunch of money on Nick Foles and her
win now mode. Matt Stafford's the guy in Detroit. Josh Allen.
While you may like Cayla Murray better, or you may
like Dwayne Haskins utter in year two, we still don't

(29:02):
know exactly what the Bills think of him. Right now,
he's still their golden boy. Broncos just whin got Flacco.
Will they draft the quarterback? Probably? Will they draft the
quarterback in the first round? I don't believe so the Bengals.
Anything's possible with the Bengals Any Dalton coming off of injury,
but the Bengals are more likely to draft a guy
in the second round than they are in the first round.
Packers have their quarterback. Dolphins just signed Ryan Fitzpatricks, so

(29:26):
why would they waste the first round pick when you
have a guy who's gonna hold the ford together. Falcons
Redskins just traded for a quarterback. Panthers might need a quarterback,
but right now they're all in on Cam because Cam
had a minor shoulder surgery. And then you get the
Giants at seventeen, which could be a spot where you
trade for a Josh Rosen But I think the bigger

(29:50):
point is that a lot of those top draft choosing
teams don't actually need a quarterback. The Lions don't, the
Jags don't, Buck don't, the Raiders don't, but they might anyway,
The Jets don't, the Niners don't. You combine the fact
that there's mixed reviews on these guys, the quarterback class
is not seen to be an elite, and you might

(30:14):
have a couple of these guys waiting a lot longer
than they should. Now. Coming wisdom tells us that somebody's
gonna trade up, and those guys are still gonna go
top five, because the only thing more valuable than selecting
a quarterback in the top five now in the draft
is playing them and having them make, you know, rookie
salary money so you can fit your team around him.

(30:37):
What's interesting is, you know, the real magic is getting
a guy second, third, fourth round to play on that
rookie salary money, which is what the Seahawks did around
Russell Wilson, with the Cowboys did around Dak Prescott, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
So I think it's gonna be interesting to see who
does slide, who does slide. The top three teams in

(30:59):
college bass Well I think can win the national title.
I'll share them with you next. Be sure to catch

on Fox Sports Radio. Man, we got a great show
for you. We got some baseball to talk, we got
some hoops to talk. Peter Vesti's gonna join us. Um

(31:46):
he's a longtime NBA insider. You know, like a metric
ton to get to will do so top of the hour.
The meantime, let's get to a game. This is game
time side on the Doug Gottlieb show m M M.

(32:09):
Dan Buyer, What is the game today? Good sense? What
is the game today? The game today? Doug is all right?
Rank um, okay, let's see what we've got here. Ranked
the top three teams most disappointed in Mike Trout's signing.

(32:29):
A lot of different ways you can go with this one.
I would say, uh, Phillies, Yankees, Nationals. Who I thought
maybe the Dodgers would make the list. No, John Ramos

(32:50):
thinks though he was just pointing to me saying, yes,
he thinks that, you know, the Dodgers are probably disappointed
in this deal. Yeah, I just I don't see the Dodgers. Yeah,
I don't. I don't. I don't see it. I don't
see it. I think the fear was the East Coast
and all all three of those these because do I
think the Dodger would have made a play. Sure, but
I think the fear was like, if you're gonna move,

(33:13):
you get the hell out of get the hell out.
But not even not even for them making a move,
is that he's just staying in southern California. Maybe they
would have a huge, you know, an even bigger gap
over the Angels in southern California. What I do think
is interesting. No A L West teams mentioned like those
teams aren't worried that Trout sticks around, so because I

(33:35):
know that there's the Angels have so much, so many
other pieces that they need to put in place. Sure,
the Astros are just better. I think the Mariners are
are frankly better than you know. The A's got got
enough to worry about. They got their stadium thing figured out.
But the A's are just operating into, hey, we we
can't get into that stratosphere in terms of getting one player.
So I don't think I don't think it's as much. Look,

(33:57):
I think because the Yankees, this was you're gonna pay
retail for him retail above and that's Yankee money, that's
national money, that's Philly's money. Rank the three best pictures
on the Dodgers. Yeah, that's I mean, Clayton Kershaw is
not going to be ready for opening days, So that
does that to be currently on the Dodgers or do
I count Clayton her shot? Yes, well yeah he would,

(34:20):
he would be counted. Walker Bueller is not going to
be ready to start opening day. But this this is
basically that that was the point of this wasn't it.
I mean, wasn't right. Like the point of the question
was you can't really count Walker Bueler because he's not
ready for opening Day. You can't re count Clayton Kershaw,
and nobody thinks Rich Hill would be on that list, right.

(34:44):
I would say this, not at this minute because they're
still ramping up, but entering this season, where would you?
Where would you? Walker Buler? One? Okay, uh am, I
still gotta put Clayton kerrshot too. I still have to
put Clayton Kersha too. And then at three, m uh,

(35:13):
I mean my eta, re you or Hill? I'm gonna go.
I'm gonna Jansen. Oh but you said, I thought you said,
you said? I thought said started you say total pictures?
Just three best pictures? Yep, it's on the rank of sheet. Yeah,
it's all right, my bad. Oh well, I don't even
know if I would do Kenley much as I could do. Yeah, yeah,

(35:36):
I would. I would probably do for you. Look, Rich
Hill is good for a good two innings, that's true.
Kenley hasn't you know, Kenley does hasn't been the same
since the since the hard thing. He hasn't really been
the same. Rank Yeah, no, I agree. That's why I
put it in the No. It was really good. I
thought you were like really challenged me, going like, Okay, well,

(35:57):
if you don't have Clayton Kersha and you don't have
Walker Bogler, now who do you got? Maybe maybe Joe Kelly,
uh oh, Pedo Bayez. We'll see how that middle relief
does for the Dodgers this year. I mean he was
Paedo Baiaz is arguably the best set up man in
baseball there at the end of last year, right, you said,
can you a guy come in and get to three outs?

(36:17):
That would be the guy. Rank the top three contenders
to win the n C Double A Tournament Vegas or
or Gottlieb Gottlieb, Duke Kentucky and Gonzaga, No, Virginia, No, Tennessee,

(36:38):
North Carolina alright. Rank the top three in game coaches
in the Double A Tournament Bill self, uh is, Bill
self is amazing? Uh in game coaches? UH? Trying to
think here? Hold on, uh in game coaches, Bill self? UM,

(37:06):
I think I think IO in game coaches would be
I O and um Bill self, Tom is oh, and
I'll go with John bi Lyte. All right. Finally, Doug
ranked the top three cities that you played in during
your playing days for the n C Double A Tournament,
all the different sites you went to. Um we we

(37:29):
never had great sights Indie one Indie was Indie is
the best Indie one? Buffalo too, Lexington three interesting Buffalo.
This is game time on the Doug Gotli Show. My
my logic behind Buffalo was this um one. We we

(37:52):
played really well to the arena was really nice. That's
the arena? Is it still HSBC? Is that it's still called?
Like I don't I honestly don't know what the arena
is called. Um, but the arena was I want to
say it was brand new at the time, and so
the arena was great and Buffalo was like a you know,
I mean, it actually mattered in the town where sometimes
you go to these big cities and it doesn't really matter.

(38:15):
So um uh. The Buffalo said, it's Key Bank. Excuse me,
it's Key Bank Centers. What it's called now. I thought
that place was great. And then after we won, we
weren't going home, so we went out and got some
Canadian beer. I thought that was really cool. And they
just had another reno renovation to Key Bank. It went

(38:37):
from First Niagara to Key Bank. It's always named after
some bank there anyway. But a really really nice place,
really really really nice place. Doug Golip Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. I got a ton of things to
get to. I don't know if you consider tonight's tournament games,

(38:57):
tournament games, that's always a hard one, right, like, uh,
Fairleigh Dickinson has taken on Prairie View A and M.
Is that really a tournament game? I guess if you win,
it is, and technically it is, but it is I
like it because simple logic, um, My simple logic is this.

(39:18):
You know, even though you don't get a chance to
play a one seed if you lose, the fact is
that you're the only game on national TV in the
n c A tournament at that moment, and the people
in Dayton treat you like a million bucks, like they
really make it. And does it does it feel truly
like an n c A tournament? No? No, But you know,

(39:40):
sixteen seeds almost never get a chance to say we
won an n c A tournament game. And you do
if you win, and you get a ton of attention.
The Temple, the Temple Belmont one is even more interesting
because Fran Dumphy is gonna coach when they lose his
last game at Temple. And as much as Rick Bird's
a legend at Belmont, so is Fran Dumphy in the

(40:01):
city of Philadelphia. Coached at two different programs and played
the third plateless coach to Penn and now coaches at
a Temple. And then today Phil Martelly was fired after
thirty four years on the job at St. Joe's. This
is a tough day in Philadelphia sports, Like you're not
getting Mike Trout, fil Martelly gets fired and it could
be the last time we see Fran Dumphy on the sidelines.
Who's like a Plato Lessau, complete legend, complete legend. By

(40:28):
the way, I like Temple tonight, I just I just
do um you know. But Belmont is super super super skilled,
super skilled. Coming up next on the Dog Got Leave Show,
we will We'll get you ready for the n c
A Tournament and who could be the Lakers next head coach.

been let in on that I believe is UH is accurate,

(41:13):
which is networks change, but friends remain the same. I've
I've been to three different networks, and I have UM
some new friends at Fox, some of my friends and
Fox when I was friends with at CBS or ESPN.
But all my my, you know, you you change your
badge and you change and you collect to check from
like your friends, your friends. If you're like a legit,
legit friend, Um, the same is true. The same as

(41:39):
completely true for UH in NBA insiders right, like, doesn't
matter if you have your own thing, what what online publication,
what TV deal? Like, you didn't lose your contacts, You
didn't stop doing what you're doing. You just have a
different you know, you just collect your check from a
different place. That's all and UM. For my entire lifetime,

(42:04):
Peter vest has been that guy who's covered the NBA
entire life. You go back, he when you right, wrote
for The New York Post. My dad is a New
Yorker and before the days of the internet and even after,
frankly the advent of the Internet, he used to go
he drive like fifteen minutes away and go get the
New York Post because though he got the Post delivered

(42:27):
to him in the mail four days later, have you
guys ever heard of any of this? Nonsen? This is
the craziest thing ever. My dad like, he hadn't lived
in New York since uh, like live when we spent
one year there before we moved to California. But before that,
I mean it was since the nineteen seventies, he hadn't
lived in New York. Well, actually maybe even sixties. He
lived in New York, and he was he liked the

(42:50):
New York Post so much that which the newspaper that
he would get it sent to him in the mail
and he would get it four days late and read
it cover to cover. Now, the New York Post is
in New York known for page six, which is like
the gossip column, and then no nationally to be It's
got a ton of headlines, it's got some really good

(43:10):
columnists and writers or whatever. But it also very right
leaning in terms of their political coverage and got some
gotcha journalism to it. But if you know the specific
writer and insider, you're like man, he used to quote
Peter West chapter in verse and then Peter WESTI used
to win the NBC covered the NBA. He was there
before Agrian Morgernowski. There's Peter West. So he's got his

(43:31):
own Uh. He has his own subscription based online service.
It's called the Patriot and you pay a couple of
bucks and you can All those sources have not gone away,
They've only grown over the years. Everyone knows that Luke
Walton is dead man walking right, like no one's I

(43:53):
don't even know if you go in there and go like, hey,
what do you think we're coming back next year? Like, no,
it's we know it's over. He'll get another job, They'll
get another coach. Who would that coach be. It's not
as easy as well, are you gonna find the right coach?
The problem if you hired tylu is the perception around

(44:14):
the NBA is Lebron's running things. The problem if you
hire Mark Jackson is that Mark Jackson is or was
wrapped by Clutch Sports. Again Lebron and Clutched Sports is
running things. We talked about this last week, which the
next hire is really important for Genie Bus. She has
to hire a good coach. She has to hire somebody

(44:34):
that Lebron respects something they can do the job as well.
It's not just about perspective. They've gotta be able to
do the job. On the other hand, there has to
be there's a perception to it. This from Peter Vesti's
online subscription service called The Patron. Patron. If Doc Rivers
wants the Lakers job, he can have it, states someone

(44:56):
who would know quote magic really likes him. Rivers would
be the first head coach in Lebron's sixteen year NBA
career he couldn't undermine or disrespect without suffering permanent legacy impairment.
Would Rivers earnestly consider leaving a rebuilt playoff team with
three starters who are again This is from Peter vest

(45:17):
service two and twenty and enough cap space July one
to entice to free agents maybe k D maybe Kawhi Leonard,
maybe Jimmy Butler and an owner who won't faintly uh
flinch to shell it out. Of course he would. Rivers

(45:38):
currently makes ten million dollars and no one would be Again,
this is from Peter Vesti. Would be slightly impressed if
Balmer's proposition would be worth sixty million dollars for four.
So the Lakers, who they haven't been cheap on players,
but they've never really been huge spenders on the coach,
would they go and steal doc Rivers from across the

(46:00):
street from the same arena. And the answer is yeah,
because it's an ultimate f you to the Clippers. Right.
I don't know if you guys have seen this, but
there's some leaked documents where the Lakers actually have laughed
at Steve Bomber's uh Steed Balmber trying to get a
new arena his own arena in Inglewood, like they they

(46:21):
there's an arrogance there to the Lakers, and some of
it rightfully so, some of it not rightfully. So the
Lakers are the Yankees and the Clippers aren't even up
to the Mets. On the other hand, Steve Bomber does
have deep, deep, deep, deep, deep deep pockets, and he
might pay whatever. But I think it's a fascinating look

(46:41):
at the inner workings of a very difficult decision for
the Lakers. How do you get somebody who can coach,
but more than anything, can own the room with Lebron
in the room, there's the catch twenty two to coaching
in the NBA. In order to win an NBA championship,
the players must respect the head coach. On the other hand,

(47:02):
part of the catch twenty two is, in order to
have the players respect head coach, he has to have
won a championship, and they're in lies. Why it's Doc
Rivers or maybe no other current NBA UH or current
or former head coach. Phil Jackson UH said the Lebron

(47:25):
and his his posse were a no go. Plus Phil
Jackson and the Lakers, that ship appears to have sailed right.
He and Jennie aren't together anymore. He didn't want to
coach every day. Yeah, the triangle is a tough sale
and Lebron's not a triangle player. Like, all of these
things don't seem to work. So where else do you go?

(47:46):
Who else has won a championship? It's out there. Greg
Popovitch is close to retiring, and um, Lebron chose to
not even engage in San Antonio. Plus Popovich, his whole
thing is the first thing is you want to play
for me, Get over yourself? Do really think Lebron is
over himself? Like that's not happening. Eric Spoelster is not
leaving Miami. Pat Riley is not coaching anytime soon. The

(48:09):
only guy available that has the respect of the room
is Doc Rivers, and he just happens to close coach
across the street. Otherwise you got turned to a college coach.
So I think it's a fascinating, fascinating discussion to have,
which will which will have with Peter vesse as uh
as he's going to join us upcoming next so um,

(48:34):
And of course he's also got insight as to Kevin Durant.
But it's like one of those things where you put
together a list and everybody puts together a dream list.
All right, we're gonna fire Luke Walton, Sure we got
our list together. Who do we call? I can't call
Phil Pomp's not coming. Who else? Tyler? That looks like
a Lebron thing. Mark Jackson looks like Lebron thing. Jason

(48:55):
Kidd doesn't get great reviews as a coach, and some
people don't like him as a guy, right, Like Derek
Fisher would have been great had he not completely flamed
out and um gotten into a fight with Matt Barnes
and now he's coaching the w NBA team. Like that's
not happening you. Oh yeah, by the way, he hasn't one.
Who do we get who's won? One about Doc Riverers? Hey,

(49:16):
what about Doc Rivers? That's not a bad idea. Plus
it's an it's an aphew. And no matter what you
two people say, like why would Doc Rivers consider it,
he'll consider it because one, he got a chance to
coach Lebron put him if if they get it right,
they got a chance to win it. No matter what
you think, and I've said about Lebron this year, it
doesn't mean that Lebron can't get right mentally physically in

(49:38):
the off season, and they put the pieces around him.
And two, it's the Lakers. It's still the Lakers. When
you walk into Staples Center, there are no banners, there's
nothing that signifies the Clippers play there until the Clippers
play a home game and then they hang some foe
banners up that are just images of their current team. Right,

(50:01):
people want to resurrect the Knicks and the Lakers. Those
are the most attractive things, and maybe the Celtics, where
Doc has already been. And and even if you could say, like, look,
he took the Clippers to the greatest heights, they've ever
been to. That was the second round of the NBA playoffs.
Think about that for a second, and then think like,

(50:23):
here's your sale. If you're Genie Buss, Doc, you realize
you could be the only man in history to coach
the Celtics and the Lakers to an NBA title. Do
you know who can say that? Exactly? Nobody? Nobody, nobody?

Like that's one couple of Starbucks coffee and you get

kind of have to spend some time this year on
Fox Sports Radio. Peter, let's start with the headline that
everybody's taking from your last piece and running with the
possibility of Doc Rivers to the l A Lakers. How

(53:16):
do you think this thing plays out? Because my guests
would be it's not like the Lakers don't know they're
gonna make a coaching change and if they want Doc Rivers,
it's not like the Lakers in the past haven't uh,
haven't talked about things before they happen. What's your sense
of how this plays out? You mean you mean they've
tampered before. Is that what he's trying to say, Well,
we just conversations, conversation. They can't they can't do that.

(53:39):
I mean, if they get again, they'll they'll end up
losing a first round draft pick or something, or suspensions
for Genie Bus that would be how rry with that thing?
But I h you know again, the operative word is possibility.
And I just laid it out there. It's amazing to

(54:01):
read what some people say afterward, you know, like, you
know so so adamant. He's not going anywhere. You know,
you don't know what you're talking about. I think maybe
maybe you ought to read the story first, and but
we're used to people not reading. They just react. I
take it back, they overreact. My my impression is that

(54:24):
because I do know, and I as I wrote that
he's always wanted to coach, the Lakers are the Knicks.
He's not getting any younger. And yeah, so the Lakers.
The Lakers are down, and but they both have great
cap room, the Clippers and the Lakers, and uh, the Lakers,

(54:46):
you know, they both have good young players. So I
I'm gonna guess, take an educated guess and say that
he takes the job but the Lakers if you know,
when the time comes, when when the Clippers are eliminated
and the Lakers are allowed to speak to him, whatever
whatever date that is. You know, again I read that,
well all the you know, the Clippers have him locked

(55:08):
in for next year, Well they don't. They don't have
him locked in. It's his option and he can he
can decide. And you know, certainly, you know, Bombers, I'm
told by everyone in that organization what a great guy
he is. Um, you know, I'll find out if I
haven't beat him, and you know, I asked him to
buy me a house that you know, now I'll find

(55:29):
how great that guy he is. But but I uh,
you know, he's gonna do what it takes to keep him.
You know, there was so much not speculation. There was
so many people around the team last year or last
summer they was saying that he was gonna let Dot
go with one year on his contract. And uh, they were,

(55:49):
they were you know, very very uh you know, both
sides were, you know, we're very strong, and bomb Gonna
decided he liked Doc, he thought he did a great
job last year, which he did, and so he gave
him this extra year. But he gave him him the option. So, um,

(56:11):
he still likes him, He still loves him. Janny and
Doc had another great year and so you know, there
we are Doug Alive Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um.
It is interesting because you know, Lakers are a little
bit between a rock and high place, right, Like you
have to bring in somebody that Lebron respects. On the
other hand, you can't bring in somebody that you know,

(56:32):
tylu It would feel like Lebron's running the joint. And
Mark Jackson a guy who uh repped by Clutch Sports.
And and you know he's first, first of all, he's
not repped by Clutch Sports. He's not you don't even
have an Asian. But but listen, Mark Jackson be a great,
great pole to the Lakers. Lebron respects him. You said

(56:56):
the key word. Uh, he certainly respects Doc and uh,
you know Mark, Mark Jackson would be a great, a
great higher Um. So to me, to me, it's those
It's not gonna be tylu. I don't believe it will
be Jason Kidd or anybody else. If if Rivers turns

(57:16):
it down, UM, to me, it's it's it would be Mark.

What about Kevin Durant, people have are really struggling to
pin down what he's going to do. What have you
heard is the And I know it's a fluid situation.

(57:37):
What's the state with Kevin Durant in Golden State? Well,
as I wrote the other night, you know the other day,
I had a lot of info in that column. Um
I I do not believe he'll return to the Warriors,
and uh so, so where will he go? You know,
A couple of people tell me that he doesn't want
to leave California, and that makes sense, so it would

(57:59):
either be the Clippers or the Lakers. I don't see
him going with Lebron because then he'll same people that
accused him of joining, you know, a championship team, you know,
just to get up, just to get his ring. Now
he's going to join you know, uh, you know, player
at all time great player, and then he's not going
to get the credit either. I think I think wherever

(58:19):
he does go, he'll want his own team. That could
very well be the Clippers. I believe Kyrie. I'm sorry,
I believe Kuai get that mixed up all the time,
Kawai and Kyrie. Somebody ought to do something about that. Um,
I think I think Kyrie is gonna be there, Kwai
is going to be there, Kwai Leonard and so they

(58:40):
make they make a great combination. And um, and he'd
have his own team, and he'd have his city to know,
they're like it's like in New York if he went
to Brooklyn, which I've heard that also as a possible
distinct possibility. Um, he'd have his city because they could
they could just knock the knock the Knicks off the
map with him. Um. You know, and I've said this,

(59:03):
you know a lot of people think he's going to
the Knicks. I just I just don't see it. Because
the team is not ready to win. So you know,
what if they get what if they get Williamson to
get another you know, free agent of consequence. Uh, it's
still in its infancy. UM, I'm not so sure he'll
want to go through, you know, the torture of of

(59:26):
trying to win in New York. But having said that,
you know, New York media is not what it used
to be. Is the world has changed that New York
Times doesn't even cover the Knicks anymore. It's like a
huge eight, you know, you know the post the post
is uh, you know when I left, when I left
as the NBA columnist for thirty five years, so they

(59:49):
never replaced me, and so they all they do is uh,
you know, they're not tough. You know, one or two
guys are tough. The news is like did they even
have a sports section anymore? So, but it's still it's
still I understand, but it's still New York. It's still.
I mean, we saw Jeremy Lenna couple. It's still and
and he doesn't like look in Golden State. He's you know,

(01:00:11):
it's not like you're covered with great ferocity in Golden State.
And even then he struggles with the media. So I
totally get it, Like I'm just not sure those guys
are required for that that type of attention. No, he
does struggle with He and I talked about it recently,
right after he went on his tirade. He came into
Phoenix where I'm where I'm living now, and you know,
we talked about it. But but he is sensitive. But

(01:00:32):
I applaud him for answering people say, which is say
what's on your mind. I love that he does that,
and I told him so. I just don't do it
when I write something bad, but I I am. You know,
my point in New York is that right, it doesn't
matter it is New York. But it doesn't matter where
he plays. You know, a big city anyway that you're

(01:00:53):
gonna have the same coverage because you've got old you know, ESPN,
and you've got no Fox, everybody covering it big time.
Everything you do, social media, it's come. It doesn't matter
where you go anymore. You're under that microscope. And so yeah,
it doesn't matter. You know that New York doesn't have
the media that it once had. You know, I told

(01:01:14):
I told you so. The good thing if you go
to New York is I'm not writing there anymore. So
you're you're way ahead of the game. Peter Vesti joining
us on the Doug Otlip Show here on Fox Sports Trader.
You you mentioned Kyrie. What's amiss with the with the Celtics,
like they it feels like they should be better and
for whatever reason, there's an amount of dysfunction there. I mean, like,

(01:01:35):
look surface wise, You're like, well, they went to the
Eastern Conference finals without Kyrie, without Gordon Hayward. Um, is it?
Is it Kyrie struggling to be a leader? Is it
too much asked of Gordon Hayward, who's not the same
In some jealousy there over how many opportunities he gets
even though he hasn't shown the ability to consistently live
up to the reputation. What what's what's amiss with the Celtics?

(01:01:56):
Well again, last year, last year everything broke, you know,
unbelievably well for them when when Heywood and Carrie went
down with injuries. So those young guys, they they became
real players in the league. Uh, leading leading players, took them,
took them to the uh you know, almost got into

(01:02:16):
the finals that team. So now you've got two stars
who were making all the money and coming back and
one of them wasn't ready by any stretch. And to me,
he's still not exactly right. And so you know, a
friend of mine said the other day, maybe they should,
you know, shut Haywood down. I don't see that happening.
But minutes, minutes are important, and um, you know he

(01:02:38):
might be taking minutes from someone can they run with
him the way they should. I heard an interview the
other day Brown after a game. You know, he was asked,
you know, so, so, you know, why do you play
so well today? And he kind of laid it out there.
He said, you know, when we've run, you know, the
ball moves, and it shared to me that was all.

(01:02:58):
You didn't have to say anymore. I knew what he
was saying. You know. So, yeah, when you're when you're
get in the half court and Kyrie, Kyrie does his
Carmelo Anthony, you know, impersonation of you know, overdribbling and
you know even Lebron over drilling and hate hate watching this.
Imagine how it is to play with those guys as
great as they are, You're a long way to go.

(01:03:22):
And to me, there's a lot of that with the
Warriors too. You know, people talk about how, you know,
her did such a great job of getting them to
share the ball and a lot of ball moves and
stuff like that. He didn't do anything, Mark Jackson didn't
didn't do Their people people just you know that they
believe everything that management tells them, so that's what they write.

(01:03:42):
But there's a lot of that going on and I
think that's a lot. A big reason why Durant is
unhappy there is that the ball doesn't move that taking turns,
you know, Curry, Curry will take five turns and then
Durant will take five turns, and play wants to get involved.
He's he's shooting more than ever, um and take prubbling
it more than ever. You know. The other night, the

(01:04:04):
other day on ABC, he talked about not getting recognition
as a defensive player. I see a big chip on
his shoulder, and I know that, and I know that
he said many times he doesn't want to leave, he
wants to stay there and all that. But I see
something happening there. I see win or lose this team.
We may never see this team again. Carry You'll be back,

(01:04:26):
don't I don't think Graymond Green will be back. I
don't think they want him back. I'm not so sure
cur will be back. So you know, it could be
it could be a huge shake up there and going
into a new arena. You know, they can they can
replace some of these guys. And I don't think Cousins
is going to stay. I mean, he could know Cousins
doesn't stay, and then Kad doesn't stay. And Clay and

(01:04:46):
and and Steph are are the last two of the Mohicans.
We see what they build around him. Peter Peter, Peter King.
And the Patreon is the site. Uh, you can call me.
Don't call me Peter King again. What am I doing?
You know that he was a newsday you know, as
a young guy coming up when I was when I
was in my prime at the post. So um, we

(01:05:08):
really I'm much older than Peter King. I didn't know that.

first award from Farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know every

(01:07:20):
seen it covered it, dr Farmers. We are Farmers under
written my Farmers to Fire insurance exchange that affiliates products
unavailable in every state. You know I love about the
trout deal. Guys, It's that everybody You get this from
NFL guy well, why can't I our deals be guaranteed
for twelve years? Okay, uh, I'm not sure how long

(01:07:46):
you've been following this. Yere sport there sporto, but one's
kind of dangerous and has a much shorter lifespan there,
and one's not. One has fifty three guys. One is twenty.
We get twenty four on a Major League Baseball one
plays a hundred and sixty two games. They just completely different.

(01:08:08):
And by the way, the Major League Baseball because they
have a hundred sixtwo games. All these teams have their
own local uh TV either deal or local TV company,
and that's where they make a whole lot of money.
And oh yeah, by the way, there's the other part
to it. Baseball does not have a salary cap. It
has a luxury tax. As a luxury tax, they actually

(01:08:28):
tax you for spending too much. They don't tax you,
by the way, for spending too little, which is part
of the magic to the salary cap. The new one
ever discusses, I believe I'm the only guy in the
history is portrayed to point this out. You go back
about seven or eight years ago, and they had an

(01:08:49):
uncapped year in the National Football League uncapt and when
they had that uncapped here did any of you hear
about it? No? That was two thousand ten, two thousand

(01:09:10):
ten um. And the reason no one talks about two
thousand ten was because there was no floor. Right two.
Players were hoping to hit a big pay day two
and most of them did not see the salary cap

(01:09:33):
has a ceiling. There's a limit to what you can pay,
but there's also a floor. And so I've said this before,
like when NFL gms when they save money, they don't.
They don't just go put oh, hey I saved I
start up paying you ten dollars and paid you five.
I can put that five in my pocket. Like that's
not the way it works in regular businesses. It does

(01:09:54):
in regular business if when if they if your your
company Nickel and dimes you Now, I've been a companies
where they're like, oh they they in negotiations like why
are you this is not your money. But because sometimes
guys get bonuses if they can suppress salaries, Hey man,
we know the guy's gotta get a raised, but if
you can, you know, lower the percentage of the rays

(01:10:14):
and get a guy to stay, those guys get bonus
that's how those guys stay employed. Otherwise, what's the purpose
of having people negotiate the salaries that they can't keep
the salaries down the differences in the NFL, Yes, there
is a hard salary cap. There's a limit to what
you can pay guys. There's some creativity for when you
pay them and whatever, but for the most part there

(01:10:35):
you know, there's a hard salary cap. But there's also
a salary floor. You have to spend above a certain
amount per year and if you I guess there is
no question about it, you cannot violate. You cannot violate

(01:10:56):
that part of the cap. Whereas in Major League Baseball,
like we've seen this before, when teams are trying be bad,
they strip it down. So not only bad, but they
also only pay twenty million dollars. They still make crazy
amounts of money and still you know, have their own
revenue streams, but they don't have to put it back
into the player's pockets. They just do not. So I

(01:11:16):
understand that there's this thought that the salary cap is
evil and that why can't star players have what they
have and why can't Mike Trout Like look, Mike Trout
is very very special circumstance, very special street. He's the
best player in the sport, and he plays for a
team that needs a new stadium, that doesn't have their
own TV network, and that's trying to protect, trying to

(01:11:37):
block him in the future from wanting to go to
his hometown or any of the other high money team,
high dollar teams that have their own stadium already, that
have their own TV network, that have plenty of that
have deep pockets, that would love to pay him in
his prime whatever they think the going rate is. And
so did the Angels overpaid. They did, but they really

(01:11:57):
were left with absolutely no choice. You can't go to
a city and say, hey, build us a new stadium,
or we're going to leave if your best players not
under contract, and the best player in the game doesn't
want to stay in any light, they got pitching in
a farm system and a bunch of things to salivate over.
Right now, it's Trout and that's about it. So if

(01:12:20):
you want to tell me that baseball salaries are better,
Mike Trout's contract is better than anything NFL player and
an NFL player has ever gotten before and will ever
get after. Part of that is he plays a hunder
sixt two games. Part of it is there's a strong
likelihood that he at least the first nine or ten
years he plays of those dates which are far more dates,

(01:12:42):
far more dates. It's a different calculus. But there's also
just the idea of Major League base Baseball players the
career last longer. But I would also tell you that
there isn't a star player in the NFL who is
borderline probably a superstar who is making what Aaron Judge
makes or what Mike Trout made early on are and

(01:13:05):
Judge made six thousand dollars last year? Oh yeah, Baseball
has had the strongest union. Baseball has held out for
the best stuff. But this is also what's happened in
baseball is a lot like what's happened in society. Ain't
no middle class anymore. There's the high dollar and then
there's everybody else. What about Lebron James and Kyrie Irving

(01:13:29):
potentially having a reunion, Huh, We'll discuss that up coming next.
But first, Hulu is giving away five thousand dollars to
create the ultimate game date and entered for a chance
to win. Type the key word Hulu to six eight
nine five. How would you use the money by a

But every day at this time we'd like to play
for you a portion of a previous show on Fox
Sports One in Fox Sports Radio. We call it and
now what Fox say. Here's Steven Jackson. I love Steven Jackson.
I just I enjoy his comment Harry discussing a possible

(01:15:02):
Lebron Kyrie reunion on First Things First earlier this morning.
So where do you think would be the bigger draw?
Kadi drawing people to the Knicks or Lebron drawing people's Lakers.
That's what you're getting. Well, Katie coming to the Knicks
is still not guaranteed championship. I think you got a
better chance with Lebron in l A. You have a
championship wise, we think the Lakers can win a title

(01:15:23):
before the Knicks can. If you have Katie plus someone
else and Lebron plus someone else. Yes, I want to
see Kyrie and Braun together, no question. More than Kwai,
More than Clay, I don't think. Yeah. I mean Clay
Clay can still happen if they get Clay can still
happen anywhere if they still if they signed too big
free agent, They've proven that they can win together. I
mean it is no secret Lebron was singing this song

(01:15:44):
Kyrie apologize to him telling what you was trying to
teach me to stand Now, I think I think that
bond is built until play again. And you can add
those two guys in the A D. That's championship basketball.
That's interesting. Um. Look, I don't think that Kyrie and
Lebron get back together. I don't, But I do think
it's getting less and less crazy. I do. Um. I

(01:16:08):
was told a long time ago that Kyrie hated all
of the attention and all of the infatuation with Lebron
and all of the questions and the drama which has
only been piqud this year. But I also think that
he kind of realizes, Hey, if I'm in Boston, that's
what it is. If I'm in New York, that's what

(01:16:29):
it is. Maybe this isn't just a Lebron thing. Maybe
it's an everywhere thing, because that's the only way to
cover the NBA. So I started with the thought, maybe
I'm gonna throw out a thought to you here. Okay,
I'm just two guys that I think could be the

(01:16:49):
answer to solving this riddle would be Tomas oh and
Mike Sachowski. Right, Kyrie respects, I know he respects Coach
Kate played for coach k and so of course did
Lebron James. And then there's Tom is Zoh, who remember,
could have taken the Calves job if he only knew
that Lebron James was staying or going or what are

(01:17:11):
he gonna do? But he didn't, so he turned it down.
And at some point everybody takes a shot. I've heard
Bill Self's name mentioned. That's a rumor to the Chicago
Bulls and Bill selfsic guy who handles egoes. But I
don't know if if, if the Lakers can find somebody
who's viewed as a neutral party that is mutually respected,

(01:17:32):
maybe then it works. I I I thought for a
long time, for a long time that Kyrie no way
he goes back to that Lebron thing because it's just
too much drama and too much blame if things go wrong.
But he has the same thing in Boston, and he
had to say he'd have the same thing in New York. Sorry,

(01:17:54):
that's the job that he's going to be appointed for,
whether he wants it or not. Doug Gottlieb Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, I listen, there's there. Look,
here's the thing with Peter vest who I really like,
and I really respect I disagree with and you heard

(01:18:16):
the way in which he talked to having a New
Yorker talk about Mark Jackson is like, is like one
of you guys ask me about my son today, right,
my son turns ten today, asking me about you know,
what type of baseball player is he? I'm gonna go,
I like, I think he's amazing. I don't know if
he's amazing, but I think he is because he's my guy, right,
He's my guy. Mark Jackson's New Yorker. He went to St.

(01:18:39):
You know, I grew up there. He went to St. John's,
was a Rookie of the Year with the New York Knicks,
and Peter Vesti obviously thinks the world of him. The
idea that Steve Kur didn't do anything differently than Mark
Jackson did is not close to being accurate. His style
was completely different. Now, obviously Kerr now Oh doesn't have

(01:19:02):
doesn't seem to have the same presence. They don't move
the ball and play with the joy the same way
they used to. But there are still moments which the
whereas Mark Jackson was old school NBA find a mismatch
and explained and maybe that's what works for Lebron James.
It just didn't work. It just didn't work, even if
he built and Kurd did credit Mark Jackson for trying
to get the toughness out of Steph Curry and Claig

(01:19:24):
Thompson that he thought reputation wise they lacked. But but
Peter Vessey, I mean, there's a reason Mark Jackson has
not gotten a job yet. It's because whatever however he
handled himself within that organization with the Warriors, everybody in
the NBA talks, they know, and he became unhirable, became unhirable. Yes, Ryan,

(01:19:50):
is it so the coach K thing I get I
because of the connections to USA basketball. Obviously he's a
total legend through and through. But the Tom is a thing.
And this isn't a question what he's done in college basketball.
But given that it's not to the same level as

(01:20:11):
what Coach K has done, it almost feels like the
Tom Iszzo thing is like a kind of like the
Luke Walton thing. When things are going good early on,
it's all sunshine and rainbows and everything's great, but if
there's any sort of fallback, or if they hit a
losing streak or whatever. It almost seems like Lebron would
be the type of person to immediately fall back on like, hey,

(01:20:33):
you know, it kind of worked in the beginning, but
this isn't college hoops anymore kind of thing. Yeah, look,
I think you're gonna run into that. I think you're
gonna run into it with pretty much with almost everybody
outside of maybe Doc Rivers. But even Doc was close
to being fired with the Clippers, you know, so, look,
the Doc Rivers thing makes a lot of sense. The
problem with Doc Rivers is Steve Balmbers just got deeper pockets.

(01:20:57):
He just right a check like, nah, we're not leaving.
You know, he's on our contracted now, you're not leaving us.
So I'm you know, I understand what you're saying. That
at the end of the day, he is in fact
a college coach, and that might not go over well
in some NBA circles. It all comes down to can
they find somebody who Lebron respects? Right? Can they find

(01:21:21):
somebody who Lebron respects, who the rest of the team
will buy, who can buy into, and who Magic Johnson respects. Remember, remember,
Maggic Johnson's in charge of this thing. He thinks Time
is a walked on water walked on water. And by
the way, for Time is to win the Big Ten
and win the Big Ten Tournament in spite of the
fact that they lost two lottery picks last year and
lost one of their best starters this year. Isn't far

(01:21:43):
from walking on water anyway. But I can I completely
understand what you're saying completely and there's a lot of
accuracy and validity to it. But that doesn't mean that, uh,
that is a wouldn't be a guy that would command
respect from that locker room. All right, We're gonna catch

(01:22:04):
up with NBA insider for y'all, Who Sports Chris Haynes.
What does he think about the Doc River story? Is
that a possibook? If not Doc, then who? Then? Who?
The state of the NBA, which is usually chaos. Next

I'm gonna be that guy. I'm gonna be that guy.

(01:22:46):
I'll give you an n I T pick tonight, have
my college picks as well. Getting ready, we'll unveil the
brackets for the game start on Thursday. Follow me on
on Twitter at gottlieb Show. Feel free to hit me up,
give me a follow, Yahoo NBA Inside of Chris Hanzel
joinus momentarily. We asked him about the new stories about
potential NBA head coaches, one Doc Rivers, one Doc Rivers

(01:23:09):
potentially going across the street to Lakers, and the other
the discussion of Bill self maybe to be the next
Bull's head coach. We'll get get to both of those.
Let me quickly hit you with the story of the day,
which is Mike Trout is going to be an angel
from here until the end of the of this millennium.
He signed a twelve year or agreed to a twelve
year extension worth wait for four hundred and thirty million dollars.

(01:23:32):
So I woke up today my son's tenth birthday. Uh,
he's a hooper. He's a baseball player and plays little
football and plays tennis. And he's also like any kid
in Orange County. He's a big Mike Trout fan, and
parents are big Mike Trout fans because there's nothing to
not like about Mike Trout. He plays hard, he seems

(01:23:54):
to have fun, He plays offense, he plays defense. He
ain't all about him. He just goes out there. You know,
he's got a good clean cut of haircut. I don't know.
He just he's not a drama guy. He just goes
and plays. There's no issue, no issue with him. So
I said, uh, I made my son guess how much
money he signed for. You knew how much Brice Harper

(01:24:16):
signed for. And then I said, all right, we're taking
the day off of school. We're gonna go hit baseball's
all day anyway. But I do think it actually makes sense. Look,
and we'll get to this with Chris Hayes in just
a moment. A lot of who you hire in the NBA,
it has to make sense, has to make sense. Like
the reason that Luke Walton didn't make sense for this

(01:24:37):
team is not because Luke Walton can't coach. He can.
But when you bring in Lebron, well, magic didn't bring
him to the meeting with Lebron James he didn't actually
hire Luke Walton. Luke Walton was hired before he got there.
Like that just didn't the whole thing didn't make sense,
like it would totally work out. And take a look
at my Trout. Do the Angels want to overpay him

(01:25:01):
for a guy they already paid thirty two million dollars
a year two? Not really? But what are the options
you play this year? And this year they already their
best pictures already thinking about Probably Andrew Haney probably doesn't
start um, probably starts on the d L like they've
had all kinds of They don't have a great farm
system they're trying to get. They're probably gonna try and

(01:25:22):
buy the buy their Fox regional network. They need a
new stadium, and then you know what what else out there?
The Nationals, the Yankees, the Phillies, hell, even the Dodgers.
They already got their stadium, they already have their TV networks,
They already have ready made teams to win. And the
Angels don't look like they're close to winning at all. Like,

(01:25:44):
what is the the only sale to Mike Trout is, Hey,
you're already here, and we're gonna overpay you and eventually
we'll figure it out and whatever the magic number was,
they hit it. And if Bryce Harper's were three twenty, yeah,
Mike Troud's worth fourth the over twelve. Let's get to
the NBA. Chris Haynes covers it for y'all Who Sports

(01:26:05):
and does the post up podcast as well. It's a
really good one. He joins us on the Doug Gotlip
Show on Fox Sports Radio. What do you make Peter
Vesti joined us last hour. What do you make of
the story that he's put out there? That Doc Rivers
to the Lakers is a distinct possibility. I believe Doc
Rivers has a I believe the team has the option. Uh,

(01:26:28):
I didn't read I didn't read Vesty, so I don't
know if he's test on that. I believe they have
a team option on Rivers for next season. So I mean,
just the timing, just the timing after the story is
getting out. I mean, it makes all the sense in
the world to me. Okay, So is it is it
for leverage to get to get to get Balmer to

(01:26:48):
write a huge check or is it reality of Look,
this is well, this is one I would saying. I
don't I think it's premature. Right now. But I will
say this, I think, um, there's only look, when you're
thinking about if Luke is if Luke does get the
act after this season, like, there's probably not even a

(01:27:12):
handful of serious candidates available that can take the team on.
And when I mean his team are I mean essentially
Lebron or you know, you gotta have a level of respect,
uh that he has to have for you coming in.
You have to have a resume and there you know,
the coaches that would be available don't have that resume. Um,

(01:27:34):
And so like if you're talking about Doc, I mean
that's that's a guy who has a resume. That's a
guy who's obviously you know, they're you know, they're in
the areas in l A already championship experience, one of
the best coaches we have in this league. And he's
doing he's doing having arguably his best coaching season of
his career. It makes all the sense in the world.

(01:27:55):
And the timing, like I said, I've mentioned with his
contract situation, the timing, you know, it works out perfectly. Um,
I think I would say this, I think if Doc
is interested, and I can said, I noticed this is
all premature, He's focused on this season and Lucas still
the coach. But if Doc was interested, I don't see

(01:28:16):
why he wouldn't get get get an interview. I think
you Oh, I look, I I think it makes I
think it makes a ton of sense. I do. And
it kind of relates to the Trout thing, which is,
you know, look, in order to win NBA championship, you
have to have respect in the locker room from your
best players. In order to have respect in the locker room,
you gotta have one NBA championship, and he's he's obviously

(01:28:37):
done that in these coach stars before. I guess you
know that. Peter Vesti, by the way, said it was
it was Doc rivers option, not Bomber's option within the
contract when when he joined US. Um. You know. The
other thing is he's not technically a Lebron guy, and
so I I think, you know, if I tend to

(01:28:58):
believe the Rick Buker story, which is at some point
they were so upset over Rich Paul and the and
the Anthony Davis stuff that they at least explored, like, hey,
what if we traded Lebron. I don't think it's a possibility,
but they at least offered it up there. It's they
don't want the appearance that Lebron is running the entire organization.
And if you can hire a championship caliber coach and
he's not one of Lebron's guys, that that that kills

(01:29:20):
two birds with one stone. Is that fair? No? I mean, look,
I don't know if I agree with the whole trade thing,
but look, it makes it makes sense. I just think
it makes sense just from the standpoint. And look the like,
forget about forget about who who would coach Lebron next season?
Forget about take you know, take that away. Let's get
that out of our head. About who would be the coach.

(01:29:43):
Think about who would be the coaching pool, Like, who
would be the coaching that the interview you know, who
would get get interviews? I can't think of five who
would be legitimate option. You know, you got tyleron lou
out there. That's that's an option. You know, that's that's
the shore. I would think, you know, if you want
the job, he would definitely be in consideration. And then
if the Doc Rivers scenario plays out, he would get it.

(01:30:06):
Besides those two, who else is out there? Were used
to say all they will come in. That's an instant
coach that has credibility, championship experience would immediately have from
they want to have the respect spect Lebron. James. You can't.
I can't mention five the other the other names. The
other names I would speculate on would be Misha Chefsky

(01:30:28):
and Tom Zoh those those the other names. Yeah, you know,
they're big names. We don't know what we you know,
essentially essentially, as you know, as great as they are
in their in their own field, their own right, they
black NBA experience and you would you would be it

(01:30:50):
would be an experiment that that would be. It would
be an experiment. And Tyrond Loew and Doc Rivers at
least you got have proven ground. Uh you have, you
have a background, you have a resume at this level
of of doing it. And I just don't think, you know,
if they're looking beyond Lebron, you know a coach that
can grow with you know, maybe they maybe they maybe

(01:31:12):
they still do keep a send my young nucleus around
and then okay maybe and coach K what's what's for that?
But still I still don't think that that doesn't And
even even if you bring in coach k and um
and um Tom Mizel to the to the field. All right,
that's four. That's four interview. Anybody else get an interview?
Is anybody else? Okay? I want to ask you about

(01:31:34):
about I want to ask you about Bill Self. Okay.
So there's there's a lot of discussion about and that
would be probably the fifth would be another one, right, Uh,
Bill Self, It's always been Hey, maybe he goes to
San Antonio. You know how close he is with our CBU.
For now, there's a story about the Chicago Bulls. And
if you've been watching, and I know you pay attention,
I don't think fans do. The gym Boylan thing is uh,

(01:31:55):
it's like the I get kind of what he's trying
to do, but I think he called the time out
was the last night with forty seconds to go against
Phoenix and just to run a play, like just to
just to do it like I don't And I know
he's technically under contract for next year. What are you
hearing about the legitimacy of the self to the Bulls thing?

(01:32:16):
I haven't heard anything legitimate has a right now, but
obviously that that situation boilings fluid. I think I think Chicago.
I think Chicago management they would like to bring Boiling back,
and it seems like things are kind of repairing itself.
When you look at the relationship dynamic between Boiling that
their top players, Zach Lavine, they would like to keep
him at the him Now, that's the thing, you know,

(01:32:37):
they always they you know, they said that from the
get goo, you know, when they made him the enterhim
that they would like. They don't, they don't want any
more overall. So I just don't see. I just don't
see that aside from relationship dynamics get a little bit better.
I just don't know, just from his body of work

(01:32:58):
this season and with the if that you just mentioned,
I don't just I don't know if that warrants automatically
coming back next season. I think you have to look
at if self. If he's interested right there, I think
you have to look at a Canada like that. You
gotta Chicago has went through so much, man, it was
you so much. They need to buildy at that position

(01:33:18):
at that you know, at the head coach spot. Chris
Haines joining us the pull up as this podcast you
do it with c J McCullum. How's his knee, his look.
I think, you know, initially the Blazers came out with
with a strain, you know, saying it's a strain and
he'll be reevaluating week portnand's playing so good, you know,

(01:33:38):
you know, we we started hearing other things out there
about you know, it can be it can go extend
longer past the week. Obviously, nothing to confirm, nothing we
were able to get to confirm that. But I believe
Damian Lillard said and you know in in um after
a game that they're going into they're going to play
the rest of his regular season now as if CJ

(01:34:00):
is not gonna return, and then he's just gonna return
for the post season. So that that confirmed a lot
of what what we were hearing initially as far as
the extent of the injury. Um, obviously, it could have
been worse. It could have been much worse. And when
you when it when it first happened, when you looked
at he saw it on tape, man, it looked like
it looked ugly like his season, his tire seasons in jeopardy.

(01:34:20):
That doesn't appear to pe the case. But uh, you know,
Portland's playing well. Damiens Lillard, you know, showing you know,
she's trying to get that All NBA First Team honors again. Uh.
He put up some big numbers in the win last night,
and so it's gonna be tough. It's gonna be rough,
but you know, they made a good move and bringing
in Rockney Hood Uh nearly trade that line somebody who
plays that position, and so he's gonna have to fill

(01:34:43):
that spot and do it actly. But Portland's still in
pretty good position to be able to hold it down
till c J gets back. Yeah, but if he's not right,
I mean they're not I don't know, I don't know
if threat, but they're completely different teams. They don't have CJ. McCollum. Yeah,
I I don't know if they were legit threat with CJ.
I agree, But but if they go from it, they
go from a team that could have been a nuisance

(01:35:05):
to Golden State or to Oklahoma City or to Houston,
like a team that can legit. I mean, look, he
and Dame they can. They can just carry it to
two wins. They can win two games and suddenly it
becomes a six game series. And if you're not right,
you you never know. Um to where if you don't
have c J, it's hard against one of the better
teams in the West to see them winning more than

(01:35:25):
the game. No, I get that. I mean, like with
c J, I didn't really you know, you know, I
won't damn to kill me. But you know, you know
I told him this too, you know I didn't really
you know, think they will be a nuisance against the Wars.
With CJ. I think, you know, when the Wars are right,
if they're healthy and they're motivated going in, I think
they can sweep, potentially sweep the conference. But you know,
right now, I believe Portland's potentially could be matched up

(01:35:48):
with san Antonio, and I think with all without SEJ,
they can still present some problem of san Antonio. I
wouldn't be surprised if they were able to upset them.
But no, definitely c J brings another dynamic. But man, Dane,
that boy steps up to the plate, you know whenever
that team is down, So I would never dismiss him.
Doug gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio Weird Night

(01:36:09):
in Boston last night, right because they recognize Isaiah Thomas
and they give him the tribute video and everybody feels great.
On the other hand, it was also announced right before
the game that he's not going to be in the rotation.
Malone comes out and he's like, yeah, look, he's just
not going to be in the rotation, but I think
he can help somebody else. Um is it almost feels
like he's done, Like he's you know, he's playing the

(01:36:32):
two for them, and they can't hide him defensively, like
they brought him in to be a six man, and
I think they found out that he's just a shell
of his former self. Is that is that accurate? Well,
I mean it looks that way right now, and you know,
we we guess, we all don't fully know if he's
you know, it's gonna take time to to get back
from that injury. But you know, I forgot all about that.

(01:36:55):
That was his first game back in Boston. That seems
so long ago. You know, I forgot, you know, I
forgot he was gonna you know, he was up up
up to get that um to get acknowledged by the
fans like that, and so but now it's just I
don't I don't think he's ever going to get back
um to the to the form he was as an
All Star level player. In this league. You know, there

(01:37:16):
was a lot of things going for him at the time.
You know, Boston Lacker an offensive threat, uh, you know,
he the system was built around him offensively. You know,
there was a lot of things going his way. Not
to take away anything that he accomplished in Boston, but
that's just the fact of the matter. It's in order
if I there to play at that level again, it

(01:37:37):
would take a team to build this whole offense around you,
around him. I don't think that. I don't think there's
a team out there that would do that right now.
So I think you know, initially before he you know,
had that All Star season and a half or however
long he was in Boston, you know, he was he
was a six man guy. And I think if he

(01:37:58):
can uh readjusting and get himself back into that mode
and get to that mentality, I think that's where we
can start seeing a couple more years of Isaiah Thomas
doing his day. But you know, if he if he
still believes he's a starter and the one or the first,
the top of the second, best seventeen and I think
that's where he's gonna struggle in this league. His name

(01:40:09):
MLB Network is airing live Spring Training baseball every day
through next Tuesday. And the reason we're talking to Tom
Verducci is because apparently the Age of collusion lasted all
of like a month, and now it's the age of uh,
the age of extravagance. Mike Trout today was announced that
he I think Jeff Passon now the espn um broke

(01:40:33):
the story that he's gonna sign a twelve year, four
hundred and thirty million dollar extension to stay with the Angels,
and Tom, I'm I'm wondering what your reaction was. Not
necessarily to Trout extending and staying, but to the overall
dollar figure. It's a bargain. I mean, I know, it's
hard to say that. The number is probably about four.

(01:40:55):
They essentially, you know, he's under contract for two more years,
so they added, uh ten years. Is that thirty six
million a year? That is a bargain for the guy
who is by far, and I mean by far, the
best player in baseball. You know, his average annual value
was only four percent greater than Zac Grinky and he's
signed Grenk. He signed that contract as a thirty one
year old starting pitcher. They essentially, the Angels essentially said Mike,

(01:41:19):
we have you for the next two years. How about
we give you the contracts that match old On Harper
signed for. And he said, oh okay, I like it here.
I'll take the money, neat and clean, no opt outs.
You know, no messy escalator clause is or anything like that.
It was a bargain every deal, and Angels got a
bargain the last time they signed Mike to an extension.
So you know, as it works out, Listen, nobody's gonna

(01:41:40):
feel sorry for him. Right, he's gonna be the first
half a billion dollar player in the history of Major
League Baseball career earnings. We're talking about and he's got
over five dred million without ever getting on the free
agent market, two hundred value deals. It tells you, Doug,
just how darn good this guy is. I mean, when
you look at comps, it's not my Jotto, it's not Harper,

(01:42:01):
They're not close to him. You know. It's people like
Tai Cobbon, Mickey Mental, people who are dead and in Cooperstown,
and those are his comps, no question. And I think
the timing is important for the Angels. They're trying to
get a new stadium, they don't have their own TV network,
and they know that they're not gonna be like they
don't know who they're starting picture is opening day, Right,
they wanted to be Andrew Haneen. He's had he's had

(01:42:22):
arm issues and they've had almost every picture in their
rotation have ourm issues over the last two years, and
so you can't you can't sell hope. You can't say, well,
look we're the Padres, We've got a farm system, and
they know they're gonna be They would have fought off
the Yankees, they would have had to fight off the Nationals,
the Dodgers, the Phillies, maybe the Red Sox. So it
was it was paramount to them to get this done

(01:42:44):
early and get this done quickly. No, well, you're right,
this is this is a huge year for the Angels
from a business point of view and obviously from a
baseball point of view. To know that Mike Trout is
going to be there for twelve years now. I mean,
who doesn't like that if you're an Angels fan. But yeah,
in terms of ballpark television revenues, there's a lot it's
gonna be decided to. This is a critical year for
the Angels. So um, you know, listen again, starting with

(01:43:07):
when you've got Mike Trout locked up and you never
had to get into an auction with the Yankees or
the Phillies or the Dodger or whoever else, that isn't
a massive win for the Angels. But remember this, Doug,
A lot of people didn't necessarily love Mike Trout coming
out of high school. Right. He was seventeen years old,
young for his grade, coming out of Millville, New Jersey.
You know, the short spring seasons, didn't play a lot

(01:43:30):
of the you know, showcase high profile events around the
country like now. A lot of teams didn't like it.
Infect twenty two teams. Twenty two teams passed on Mike
Trout in the draft. The Angels took him. Uh And
I believe that, well. I know this because Mike has
told me this. He has never forgotten that the Angels
reached out, committed to him, and they've grown into essentially

(01:43:52):
a family. I know that's not corny, but it meant
something that Mike Trout, who was in the draft room
that day waiting like in the NFL green room, waiting
for his name to be called, and it was a
long time teams passed and when he got picked. I
think that's something that resonates today with Mike Trout. Tom
Verducci joining us here on the Doug Gottlieb Show on
Fox Sports Radio that said, they're not really gonna be

(01:44:16):
competitors are expected to be competitors this year. A team
that is is the Dodgers, and we were trying to
figure out, like as they're like, their pitching staff is
a mess, it's a it's a mess. How do they
How do the Dodgers fix this? Well, here's what you
have to do. You have to think about everything you
know about baseball teams and how you value them going

(01:44:39):
into the season and throw it into garbage cans. Because
that's what the Dodgers do. I mean, remember we always said, well,
who are there starting five pitchers? Team's got a good five.
I think they're gonna be a playoffs team. Dodgers don't
work that way. You know, they've worked from an inventory
of about seventeen pitchers are going to be up and
back and forth and in and out of the rotation
and the roster, and they've got coverage for so they

(01:45:00):
guys to pitch maybe twenty starts instead of the thirty
starts and two innings, So I actually think they're covering.
They're really thrilled with the way Julio Arius has thrown
a ball in spring training. I mean, if you saw
him last year in the postseason, you know he barely
pitched last year because he was hurt. But he's got
electric stuff and they really encouraged by the way he's thrown.
And I'm telling you Walker Bueller, I mean, I know

(01:45:20):
you watched the World Series last year. You can't miss
the kid's arm. He's the next big thing in baseball.
He's the closest thing I've seen that justin Verlander. Now
he's not Berlander yet, you know, he's still very young,
but in terms of stuff and attitude on the mound,
this is gonna be a big time picture this year
for the Dodgers. Uh. And then Bryce Harper is now
in uh in Philadelphia. Um, what about what he leaves

(01:45:44):
behind in Washington? Because name wise, they still have an
unbelievable pitching staff and they've been really, really close. Um,
what's the sense in Washington now with with the Bryce,
with the Bryce Harper story no longer part of their conversation. Yeah,
it's a great quay. And I mean they think they're
well positioned, as he said, they certainly. You know, when
they you go into a series and you're gonna see

(01:46:05):
Scherzer and Cornban and Strasbourg. I mean, good luck getting
a couple of hits in the three games series, so
they can still shut people down with their starting pitching
and they are fairly ad team. But Doug, I think, listen,
I think they're gonna miss Harper, even though Harvard didn't
have a huge last year last year in the nice
second half. UM, But there's something about when you have
that big guy in the middle of your lineup, right,

(01:46:27):
He's the fulcrum of the lineup. He's the falcram of attention.
You know, he allows other people just kind of skate
through without being accountable on a daily basis if they
can't help. But miss Bryce Harper. He's a guy who
hits home runs and he walks, you know, pictures still
respected Bryce even when he was hitting two fourteen as
to break break last year. I you know, I know
they're saying they've moved on, and listen, they've got a

(01:46:48):
good team that the NMAL East is a beast. They
have four teams that are probably within three games of
one another. UM. But I'm a little skeptical about Washington
just you know, picking up and and oh Bryce Harp
is not here. We're all good. And then there's the Yankees,
who still you know, bargain basement, they get to what
do you pay Aaron Judge? Eventually the Mark Yankees. Oh Man, Well,

(01:47:12):
that's part of the problem if it is a problem
with the Trout contract, Doug, because he's the best player
in baseball. And I love Aaron Judge to mean, he's
in the top five and all the baseball But again,
Mike Trout is the best player. Now, he set the
bar not very high. So how do you go in
and ask for more than thirty six million year? How
do you go into whoever you are, Aaron Judge, Mookie Bets,

(01:47:33):
go to your team and say I want to be
paid more than Mike Trout. I mean, you can ask
for it, but the comeback is simple. For a team
you're not Mike Trout. Nobody is. So you know, it's
a little bit different for Judge too, because you know
he's older as a guy who played college baseball, so
he's not gonna be looking at the length that Trout
got here with twelve years. But if you've caught even
a snippet of Aaron Judge this spring, Doug, I'm telling you,

(01:47:56):
and you know he's good. We saw the Monster season
two years ago. Last to hear that, you know, broke
the wrist and his numbers suffered a little bit. But uh, Matt,
this guy, he's my m v P pick for this season.
He is just gone full on monster so far. I
know it's spring training, but he looks terrific. Tom, I
can't wait till uh till was is opening Day. Should

(01:48:18):
be super excited and obviously for the next uh, for
the next millennium, well millennial, will millennium, excuse me, we
will see Mike Trout in an Angel uniform. Appreciate you
doing this on what's the historic day getting ready for
big season baseball. Thanks so much for your time and man,
thanks always a pleasure. All right, that's Tom Verducci. Check
him out s I dot com, fallm on Twitter of course,
covers it for Fox Sports and the MLB Network. Let's

(01:48:41):
quickly get you to dan fire find out what else
is going on in the world of sports, and when
there's some other baseball news outside of the Trout contract again,
twelve years, four hundred and thirty million dollars. Maybe not
at the level of the Trout news, but the Tigers
say that picture Michael Fulmer will seek a not once.
That's why sir second to third opinion on his injured elbow.

(01:49:03):
Dr James Andrews. He got the second opinion. He recommended
Tommy john surgery Tiger seeking a third opinion. Yankees reliever
Della Betances is going to start the season on the
injured list because of a shoulder issue. First for the
n c Double A Tournament is tonight in Dayton, Prairie
View A and M takes on FAIRLEYE. Dickinson tip off
it a little over an hour. The winner will get Gonzaga.

(01:49:25):
On Thursday. Eleven Sea Temple takes on another eleven in Belmont,
with the winner getting Maryland coming up on Thursday. That's
the late game tonight. Kyler Murray meeting with the Arizona
Cardinals today on the Oklahoma campus, while the NFL Network
reports free agent veteran safety Eric Berry is meeting with
the Dallas Cowboys and Stadium Sports of this report earlier

(01:49:47):
not me in official by the n c Double A
quarterback Tape Martel will be eligible immediately for the University
of Miami after the quarterback transferred from Ohio State. His
hardship waiver was granted. We'll be back to the Doug
Gottlieb Show in ten seconds. But first a word from
Farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know every windshield collision has
a unique sound. Beetle bird, poop, drone seen it, covered it,

(01:50:12):
doctor Farmers. We are Farmers underwritten my Farmers Truck Fire
Insurance Exchange and Affiliates proucts unavailable in every state. M hmm.
So we've gotten a baseball, we've gotten to to to
college basketball. Some we had Dean Altman honor earlier to day. Really,

(01:50:35):
I think he's an amazing coach and he's done a
tremendous job as Oregan's gotten healthy and playing their best
basketball the year. You know, it's interesting. I was watching
the Warriors and they lost last night. They didn't have
k D in the previous couple of games they won
without them. They get k D back and they lose,
and they lose to the Spurs, and the Spurs, what
can you say? The ability to to be consistently above

(01:50:57):
five dred have winning teams through all the all the
machinations of who they are. And it struck me that,
you know, look, I'm holding the Warriors up to previous
Warriors team. The mistake that I was making that I
have made in regards to the Warriors, the same mistake
that we will make when we talk about UH, this

(01:51:19):
Duke team. I've I've heard people compare them to the
Fab Five, you know, I've I've heard them. I've heard
that happen, like, let's compare Duke to the Fab five.
And I think that's a mistake. And the reason is
they it's a completely different era, right, It's a it's

(01:51:41):
a completely different era, Like what what's what's missing in
the Duke versus the Fab five? And the Fab five
did not we know, they did not win a Big
ten title. It should be pointed out that back then
they didn't actually have the Big Ten tournament either, so
they couldn't have won a Big ten tournament. It's like

(01:52:03):
they didn't win a Big ten tied on the Big
Tent was really good and they were really young, and
they did get to the nation. They lost the first time.
By the way they lost the national championship game. I'm
not sure people remember that was actually against Duke in
the Twin Cities and they lost by twenty. Duke lost
UH two years previous by thirty. But that was a
thumping at the hands of the Duke Blue Devils who

(01:52:24):
went back to back championships. Everybody remembers the time out,
the Chris Webber time out. What they what they don't remember,
what they have so quickly forgotten is that, um, the
first the first national championship game wasn't close. They beat Cincinnati,
who was a twelve seed in the final four to

(01:52:45):
get to to play Duke and they got absolutely throttled
by Duke throttled. But like if you look back, yeah,
they the final four team, the first, the first to
Fab five. They did have a couple of older players.

(01:53:05):
There's the couple. One one was Eric Riley who was
a center. They had James Voscoll, They had Rob Polinka.
I don't let you guys know that the gentleman, the
general manager of the general manager of the Lakers, was
actually on the Michigan Wolverines on that Fab five team.

(01:53:27):
But I think what's super interesting to me is that
we can't compare this duke team to other duke teams
because they don't have to play other duke teams. They
don't have to play other Duke teams opponents. They only
have to play this year's competition. And that's the same
thing with the Golden State Warriors. Would this Warrior's team

(01:53:48):
beat the Warriors team of last year, maybe of two
years ago? No? Why two years ago? Andre Goodala was
two years younger, Sean Livingston was two years younger, Clay
Thompson was two years younger. And maybe they've had more

(01:54:08):
experience playing together, but they're also older, and their centers
have changed. And we all think of of DeMarcus Cousins
being the nude DeMarcus Cousins, but he's really this version
of DeMarcus Cousins. The bigger thing is the competition they're playing.
This Houston team is not as good as last year's
Houston team. I think this Oklahoma City team is better,

(01:54:31):
but not demonstrably better, not that much better. So so
you you you take a good scan of it, you
really look at it, and you say, I'm a little
let down by the Warriors. They seem to be not
having that much fun. I'm not sure how much Kade

(01:54:51):
really enjoys the experience, nor does Steph and Clay totally
enjoy the experience of playing with him. Draymond is a
shell of his former self. Last year he had the
shoal there, He's had a knee. He can't make a shot.
Two years ago he was way better. But you know what,
they don't have to play any of those teams or
the Warriors two years two years ago. The West is
not as good as it's been. The East is better.

(01:55:15):
And much like when you're putting together your brackets and
you're like, well, you know this. I love when you
get a loaded bracket, Like, hey, guess what if you're
a one seed and the two and the three are
really really good, you only have to play one of
those two teams. It's physically impossible to play both the
two and the three in your bracket, just like for
the Warriors. Like I I think the Raptors are good.

(01:55:38):
I think the Celtics are tremendous when they're right mentally,
I think the Sixers are I don't think the Sixers
are as good as they've been, but they're they're young players,
are stars, and they've played in some playoff games, played
in some tough playoff series. Who am I forgetting? Uh
blah blah blah blah blah blah, I forgetting I got
the Sixers, the the Actors, Celtics, and the Box and

(01:56:02):
the I mean the books are the best. But guess
what if you're the Warriors, you only have to play
one of those teams. They'll let them beat up on
each other. The Spurs don't have Kauai anymore. They're not
nearly as dangerous. You know that the Thunder can't shoot.
The Rockets lost the reason just don't feel like they're

(01:56:24):
the same. They don't have like PJ. Tucker the whole
series stopping Kevin Durant, I don't see it. The West
isn't as good and you only have to play one
team from the East. And so while the Warriors are
not as good as they've been and the pieces de
Marcus Cousins doesn't make them better, they don't have to
be better. They don't even have to be as good
as they've been. They just had to be better than
everybody in the West and and one team in the

(01:56:46):
East for four out of seven games. And that's exactly
what they will be. That's exactly what they will be,
all right. Got some picks, including um all you need
to know about the first four, who to pick tonight,
how to watch tonight, and why you don't need your
bracket in tonight. Next, be sure to catch live editions

(01:57:10):
of The Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern
three pm Pacific. That Farmers Insurance. We know a roof
can withstand a lot, one exception being an airborne car.
I've seen it covered it. Dr Farmers, we are Farmers
underwritten my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance exchanges and affiliates products
unavailable in every state. You might not be able to

(01:57:30):
get a new car with your tax refund, but you
can make your car feel like it's brand new. All
it needs is a great paint job. Come into may
Go today and get your dream paint job during their
tax season sales event. So do you guys, have your
brackets done? Done? Done? Music? Give your bracket done done?
I wouldn't say it's done done, but I did very
quickly today before the show, just kind of do like
an off the top of my head, like all right,

(01:57:51):
here's who I think I'm gonna win, and then saved it.
But I may take a look at it again over
the next couple of days. Okay, um, what about you rama,
I will wait till Wednesday evening Thursday morning to kind
of gather up more information. So no, I have not
done a bracket yet. You're gathering information, gathering up some

(01:58:12):
extra thoughts, you know, just kind of a you know,
Doug Ramos is an analytics guy. He's running the vorp
and the the war, the winds above the you know
all the stuff. That's how you're doing all the numbers.
Did you really do VARp? So you just said, you
just said to me, you just said lots of decimal
points stuff. Yeah. Yeah, what about you, Dan Buyer? Have

(01:58:36):
you have you done that as well? It is done,
the done, done, done that. The bracket is finished. Cool, alright,
let's well, let's get after it. Let's get to the press,
the press, Dan Buyer is done done. Well. You know,
I've run a bracket contest with some friends ever since

(01:58:56):
I was a sophomore in high school. So I like
to get the pig in early because then people send
me their picks and I don't want to be influenced
by what they pick because sometimes I see who they pick. Yeah,
so I try to get the picks done early, finished
them last night, slept on it, and woke up this
morning and said, Yep, this is what it's gonna be.
My n I T bracket is not complete, but if

(01:59:20):
you run one, it should change. Greg Doyle of the
Indianapolis Stars saying, no Romeo Lankford tonight for Indiana. Is
they face I think St. Francis and the n i T.
But yeah, Romeo Lankford not going to play in the
n i T tonight. Tim, I don't know what we're doing,
what we're doing allowing this to be cool. Like, I
get it, he's going to the NBA, But like you,

(01:59:41):
you can't. You're too got to play in the n
i T. Couldn't get you. Your team lost twelve out
of thirteen games. You're playing for Indiana. Get one chance
to play for Indiana. I I don't know how that be,
how we I don't know how this became. Okay, I
just don't. Somebody's gonna somebody's gonna have to help me
out with what I'm what I'm what I'm missing? You know? Well,

(02:00:03):
Archie Miller was quoted as saying, Romeo Romeo, wherefore Art Romo? Hey?
First four is in Dayton, not too far away from Bloomington. Yeah,
it's a couple hour drivers, so uh Prairie View A
and m tips it off with fairly Dickinson in less
than an hour. The winner gets Gonzaga. On Thursday in

(02:00:24):
Salt Lake City, Temple takes on Belmont to the late
game winner gets Maryland. Okay, um, pretty interesting. A fairly
Dickinson team that won as won eight games in a row,
but was not the overwhelming best team in their league
going against uh Prairie View, A and M that. I
think they lost eleven games in a row at one
point time in the season, maybe even more, but they

(02:00:45):
were far and away the best team in in their league.
That's always kind of fascinating to me. They took down
This is a fairly Dickinson team that took down St.
Francis in an upset. St. Francis won their league in
an upset in the NBC Championship game, and uh, they've
been to the tournament before. I love this kid, Darnell Edge.
You know what he plays with, and it plays with

(02:01:07):
an edge. That's right. I'm gonna go with fairly Dickinson tonight.
John likes him as well because they have f you
in their name, so you know, well, fairly Dickinson. It's
people call it fairly ridiculous, right. That's a Kentucky sophomore
forward PJ. Washington in a walking boot for precautionary measures.
That does not sound like a good thing. It's right,

(02:01:29):
have you ever been anybody know? His name has been
a walking boot just because like, hey, it just it
looks good. It matches the jenes. Uh, hopefully I'll never
have to this. Just in from Jay Glazer. Dallas Cowboys
a wide receiver at Randall Cobb have come to terms
on a one year deal. Yeah, well that that replaces

(02:01:51):
Uh what's his name is signed with the with the Bills, right,
cold Beasley? I guess as a Randa you know they
need another need another wide receiver. I don't know if
Rando Cobb is in the slot, but I think Cold
Beasley will be missed. But Randal Cobb has a world
of town and must see hoops tonight in Milwaukee Lakers
and Bucks that won't feature Lebron James also won't feature

(02:02:12):
Janis Intete Coombo, both sitting out because of injuries tonight.
Did you know that the Bucks home benches have heated
seats for the players, adjustable as well for your height? Yeah,
not too shabby. Can you imagine that you can get
out there and pressed that the press. You spend all
that money if you're in Milwaukee got this brand new
arena and Lebron doesn't even play when he comes when

(02:02:36):
he comes to town. If you were Robert Kraft, would
you admit that would you would would you to to
get to get it off the books? Would you admit
that you would have been guilty at trial? I wouldn't
you gotta stick to your gun? So, uh yeah, I
mean I don't know. I mean it's a it's a misdemeanor,
I think, right, not a good look, but a misdemeanor.

(02:02:57):
They've already embarrassed him. When more can they embarrass him with?
