You're listening to Fox Sports Radio brought to you by
Farmers and Farmers we've seen almost everything, so we know
how to cover almost anything. When it's game time, have
an experienced player help you stay ahead of the game.
Put their experience into play. At Farmers dot com. We
are Farmers. Okay, So the NFL has done it. They've listened,
(00:43):
they've listened, and they have changed and they have said, hey,
we can review non reviewable or previously non reviewable calls
like pass interference. And so this is being champion because
though it doesn't fix what happened to the Saints. You mean,
(01:05):
like they should have thrown it on first and second down.
It doesn't change what happened to the Saints, like that
was actually a crumbing past on the inside, not the outside.
What happened to the Saints. Oh, you mean like they
couldn't get a stop in regulation and turn the ball
over and overtime? What No, what happened to the Saints?
Just that got screwed. So let's change the rules, which
(01:28):
everybody is championing, championing, ning, ning, ning today. Here's Roger
Goodell on why they change the rule. Our job is
to get these right, and we should use every available
means to get them right, and replay is a great
means to be able to do that. Replay is a
great with Our job is to get it right right, wrong, No,
(01:53):
it's not. It's to do the best you can and
sometimes you're gonna get it wrong. Look, we know that
officials officiating his flawed. How do we know what is
the least reliable testimony in a courtroom? Anyone? I witness testimony?
(02:16):
And people talk about people, people say, well, you know, listen,
you know this whole d n A thing, right, Like
the the whole idea of DNA testing would somehow got O. J.
Simpson office because people inherently don't trust and understand science, right,
(02:36):
They just don't. They don't trust and understand science. A
scientific fact is like is is basically you know, people
wouldn't under Steven signs like no one in a million
means it could be one of me. No, No, that
actually means it will never happen. But you ask any lawyer,
(03:01):
any judge, anyone who spends any amount of time um
in the profession of law, and they will tell you
that the least reliable testimony is eyewitness testimony. And knowing this,
when we have an official, and you also ask yourself, like,
how could the ref be standing right there and miss
(03:23):
the call? Because it's really hard because you're actually looking
for two things. I mean, think about it, if you're
an official on the sideline in terms of do you
get your feed in or or feed out? Or do
you bobble the football? What am I supposed to look at?
Human beings are not get gos. I do have a
friend from college who used to call gecko because their
eyes are a little set far apart. But for the
(03:46):
most part, human beings are not get gos. So it's
impossible to ask of an official to judge whether or
not somebody has possession of the football and has both
feed in bounds. In the nash Football League, how can
you do both? But that's what we asked to them,
And then we provide the checks and balances of the
eye in the sky. So yesterday the owners passed the
(04:10):
provision by a vote of thirty one to one at
the annual league meeting in Phoenix. The Cincinnati Bengals were
the lone team to vote against the past interference past
interference replay reviews source told NFL Networks Mike Garafolo that's
because the Cincinnati Bengals are smart. They are they have
(04:33):
thought about the law of unintended consequences. First, if we're
gonna do past interference this year, are we gonna do
holding next year? You? Oh yeah. By the way, if
we're gonna do past interference, when do we start evaluating
past interference? I've told you many times before. A lot
of times defenders get called for past interference because first
(04:54):
the offense pushes to create space, and then the defense
closes up that space and that's when contact is made.
The push up still occurred. So when can we start
evaluating whether or not we throw a replay flag. But
maybe more important people are are are talking about how
long the games are, and at some point they will
stretch onto the length of college football games, which are
(05:15):
unwatchable because they are four sometimes four and a half
hours long. Forget about all that. What's the value of
protecting your time outs and stepping out of bounds and
just the rhythm of football when you have a team reeling. Sure,
you can't throw a challenge flag in the last two minutes,
but the booth can review every play, and the eye
(05:36):
in the sky can decide whether or not they want
to review whether or not a penalty or a non
penalty was called. Don't get me wrong, this is a
loophole that is being shored up because if you go
back even in college football, remember a couple of years ago,
they used to review every scoring play. And my my
point at the time was like, hey, if you're gonna
(05:57):
review every scoring play, why don't you review every play
that's around the end zone? What happens if a guy
is ruled to not catch a football in the end zone,
why can't you review that one. But now we're to
the point where you're in the two minute drill and
you're marching down the field and they have the power
to stop play on on any catch, on any penalty,
(06:22):
they can stop it. So the idea of a hurry
up offense, the idea of a prevent defense the timing
of hey do I do I protect my time outs
and call one. Now we've seen it in college basketball.
You'll see it starting tomorrow during the n c A
tournament when coaches have a certain number of time outs.
But because you can now review and call for a
(06:44):
review of any out of bounds play which they touched it,
you got to go to the monitor that creates another
time out. We've completely changed the strategy of the game
with our intent, which is a good one to get
it perfect. It's not perfect, and if you want it perfect,
you sure as hell can have people judging it. Do
(07:05):
you know why? Because the least reliable testimony is I
witness testimony. Like we all want the Saints to have
gotten a fair end of the of the stick, but
they did in fact kick a field goal and have
the lead at home, and we're unable to protect that
(07:26):
lead and did turn the football over in overtime and
did lose at home, Like, sorry, it sucks. Is it
worth completely changing strategic game playing in the NFL? I
say no. I think the Bengals say no. And the
overreactive nature to it. That's what we did with the overtime, right,
(07:47):
Remember why the overtime rule changed. The Saints went to
the Super Bowl, Brett fab never touched the football in overtime,
and we changed the rule. But we didn't change it completely.
We said, both teams get the football unless they don't.
Points are meaningless unless they're touchdowns, then they're meaningful enough.
All we've done here is what they've done with common
(08:09):
core math. You ever sat down and trying to try
and do homework with your kid, Nothing more embarrassing than
doing home with your with your kid and not knowing
how to do it right. But there's no way you
know how to do it. There was nothing wrong with
taking you know, when you're adding triple digits carrying the one,
(08:31):
and nothing wrong with that. I sat down my son
the other day and I was like, okay, you're doing division,
all right, so we draw this line. Here's like, what
are you doing? Like? We're doing division? And now that's
not how we do it, not how we do it.
We have made something that is very easy, very easy.
How many times does fifteen go into four and fifty? Right? Thirty?
(08:52):
By the way, is your answer? There you go, Thanks
Scott Lee bup top No, no, no, no, but you
gotta do common core math style. There's all kinds of
numbers and graphs and charts and showing of your work,
which doesn't actually totally solve the problem and only confuses
you more. It's it's okay to go like, hey, we
miss one. You know, sorry we miss one. Now we're
(09:16):
completely revamping it. I'm sure that's what happened with common
core math. Whether it was we had this need to
sell more textbooks, right, which is really kind of That
was my dad's theory all the time. You know why,
you know why they change styles every year? They got
to sell more pants another well with pleets, he argued
to the day he died that pleets were fined. It's like, Dad,
pleets are over. There's nothing wrong with pleats. A classy look.
(09:40):
You have a flat laning pleet like, or you could
go flat front. You know why they invented flat front pants?
Tell me, dad, because they needed to sell more pants.
Maybe maybe that's why they invented common core math. But
I think it's this need to over explain and over
perfect things so that there's never a mistake made. And
you know what mistakes happen if you didn't want mistakes,
(10:04):
if you want a perfection. You know what you shouldn't do.
You shouldn't have eyewitness testimony deciding who wins and loses
sporting events, because it is the least reliable testimony. The
former head of officials in the nash Football Again Fox
Sports NFL rules expert Mike Pereira joined the show. What
does he think of the new rules and what are
(10:24):
the unintended consequences of said new rules. We will discuss
of coming next, but first, you know, hiring is probably
the most challenging thing to having a business. I have
my own business on the side, uh it's a basketball business,
and nonetheless it's the same if you own a pizza shop,

Fox Sports Radio, the a A F maybe in financial trouble.
(12:19):
How it relates to the n c A tournament. I
will share with you in about ten minutes. First, so
let's check in with the guy who's talking about a
game changer, right, everybody needs a rules analyst? Why because
My Prayer got on TV and they're like, Wow, that
guy is awesome. How do we get a Mike Pereira.
There's only one Mike Prayer. We got him at Fox.
He's kind enough to spend some time this year on
the Doug Gotlip shows for Vice President Officiating the NFL,
(12:41):
current rules analysts for Fox Sports. Follow him on Twitter
at Mike Prayer, and of course you'll see him on
this year's Super Bowl, which is on Fox from Miami.
Mike at first, plush. Let's let's first start by talking
about the idea that you can review pass interference. UM
and the booth can review pass interference. Do you like
(13:01):
the rule? I'm glad that they can address the issue
of what happened in New Orleans, but I think the
unintended consequences are going to really bog down this change,
and it will become a headache because at least until
I see the language. Um, what are we going to
get involved here with? Are we going to get involved
(13:23):
in the so called bang bang play where the contact
is one frame before the ball arrives. That will never
be called on the field, But are we going to
let replay change that? What about the hail mary play,
which we've always said it's acceptable to push an opponent
out of the way, you just can't tackle into the ground.
Now does that become a pass interference and and obviously
(13:47):
really change the outcome of the end of the games? Um,
you know what about offensive pass interference where a wide
receiver blocks two yards down feel before the pass is
touched by a back coming out of the back field?
Are we going to have those challenged and reviewed and
turn those into offensive past interference? Here's the deal. This
(14:07):
is the way I feel dugged. That for every one
play that is so egregious and blatant as what occurred
in New Orleans, there's gonna be fifty others where we
stretch our heads and go is it or isn't it?
Technically it is, So are we going to all of
a sudden go by the letter of the law and
(14:28):
have a zillion more pass interference penalties and quite a
few more stoppages by the way, and which will lead
to more dead time in the game. So I don't
think I'm glad that they at least made a move,
but I don't think they went about it the right way,
and I think it will cause a lot of problems
down the road. Thanks joinings, my perfect stuff, Thank you. No,
(14:52):
I mean this is this is basically what I've been saying.
I've also pointed out that it stayn't change your strategy
as well, knowing that late in the game you don't
have to sit on those time outs because there's gonna
be unnatural timeouts as well, right like, like, do you
do you get out of bounds like you used to
try and get out of bounds? Do you throw the
football over the middle of not you know, knowing that
(15:13):
there could be you know, past interference review could be called.
And and here's the last one. This one I think
is probably the most difficult, and you see it on replay.
More is, oftentimes the offense will push off to the
defense creating space, then the defense will close the gap
and sometimes interfere with the offense how far back even
within the context of each play, Do review each play? Sure, well,
(15:38):
you're gonna review it all the way. And you know,
from the time the pass is released that's on the
defensive side of the ball, and then basically from the
snap on the offensive side of the ball, if there
are receivers blocking downfield. And let's remember now, replay is
going to have to get involved in what I call
bang bang plays. The rule says that it's said the
(15:58):
contact has to significantly hinder the receiver's ability to make
the catch or the defenders ability to make the interception,
and of course the ball has to be catchable. So
now we're going to take all of these elements and
move it into New York for people who are not
officiating anymore are going to try to make this decision.
(16:21):
And that's a great concern to me. Inside of two minutes,
you know, we're gonna be at the key point of
the game, and the replay official at the stadium is
going to be the one that's going to have to
get the game stopped to look at a play to
see if it is if it wasn't called, or if
it isn't if it was called. And many of these
(16:42):
people have never officiated it down to football in their life,
and so you know, we're we're getting into this area
of judgment and replay has taken us down the road
of this and and I'm nervous about it. It's fraught
with difficulties. And to me, I would have rather seen
him go to the eighth official, put him in a booth,
(17:05):
rotate officials from the field into the booth, and let
the guys that are actually making the calls be the
ones that make the decision, much like Major League Baseball
does with their umpires um. I just I think they
had an easy fix with what some people call the
side judge, and and that they didn't go that far.
(17:26):
And lastly, you know, I don't like what Art Rooney said.
He said this was a compromise that allowing UH allowing
pass interference to be reviewed basically kept them from having
to review hits on defenseless players or hits that involved
illegal use of the helmet. Alvin Kamara got killed last year,
(17:50):
no call was made, and now replay can't get involved
in that. So I'm sorry, but you're kind of telling
me NFL that you're more concerned with the past interference
miss than you are with players safety, especially when the
n C Double A can review those agree as hits.
(18:11):
So I'm just not sold. I'm glad they took a step,
but I'm not sold that they went far enough. I
guess my prayer join is on the Dog Got The
show on Fox Sports Radio. I think my issue is
it is this is a bit of Pandora's box, right,
because as much as p I can affect the outcome
of game, can't in agree just miss hold also affects
(18:32):
a game? Like is that? Is that? What's next? Sure?
I mean you know you can. I mean this gets
into the realm of do you want replay to get
involved in everything? And you know I've said no, not
at all. Bill Belichick says, let us let us review anything,
you know, let us challenge anything, because we don't want
more challenges. Well, yes you do, Bill, because the way
(18:54):
that the system is right now, the replay official confirms
all scoring plays, all um changes of possession, and they
even added to this year, so you know they'll review
all extra point dries whether it's successful or unsuccessful. And
the scoring play that's taken away by a penalty. You know,
there's only one coach's challenge, barely over one coaches challenge
(19:17):
a game, and so if you want to let them
challenge anything, that number is going to go from one
to four. And combine that with the other stoppages and
we could be looking at games with eight stoppages. I
don't like it. I don't like it. I think the
game as too many dead times as it is, and
I think Roger Goodell has done a good job of
trying to do shorten this dead period of the game
(19:39):
between plays and replay, and I think we're going to
have the opposite direction. Okay, how about the kickoff rule
for people who don't know. Now, there's there's no uh
for the team kicking off. There's no run up, right,
you have to start from from from whatever whatever steal
position that you're at before the ball is kicked off,
and then basically you can have three guys back and
(20:01):
then there's a zone where everybody else stands and then
they can retreat. But there's there's no more two man wedge.
Obviously this is the cutdown and concussions, but how do
you think it affects actual gameplay. How does it affect
kickoffs and kick coverage? Well, I mean, obviously how it
affects it is is that there's so many touchbacks. You're
talking about over kickoffs results in touchback, so it's another
(20:23):
it's another non play. But that being said, the percentage
of concussions on kickoffs did go down, and that and
that that certainly pleases the league and at least keeps
the kickoff in the game. The greatest effect is the
on site kick to me, because if you look at
the success of on side kicks, in two thousand seventeen,
(20:45):
the success rate for on side kicks was twenty two
point seven per cent. I believe the number was in
two thousand eighteen with the new rules not letting your
run forward, not letting you overload on one side of
the ball, that success rate went down to just over seven,
which is why they kind of pushed for the Alliance
(21:05):
type give you one play fourth and fifteen from the
thirty five to try to keep the ball, but they
voted that down. But you know, to me, it's interesting
because I am involved with the Alliance to some degree,
and they don't have kickoffs period. They just put the
ball twenty five yard line and just start play. And
it's been interesting the response from players and clubs and fans. Um,
(21:27):
they don't miss it. And uh and and I'm not
so sure that the league anytime soon we'll get rid
of it, but but it's been interesting. Great stuff, Mike.
I really appreciate your passion and your knowledge of the game.
Can't wait to see on Fox next year. And thanks
so much for giving us your your thoughts on what
the NFL has decided to do in the upcoming season.
You gotta Doug thanks anytime. That's a former vice president
(21:50):
officiating the nash Football League. Mike Prayer, current rules analysts
for Fox Sports. Course you'll see Ian Dean Blandino this
year on the Super Bowl. It's get you to Dan
Buyer find out what else what's going on the world
supports Dan no Lebron James tonight for the Lakers on
a back to back because they faced the Utah Jazz
in Salt Lake City. Okay, I'm sorry interrupt, but here's
what's interesting. So last night after the game, well a
(22:13):
game which they won against the Washington Wizards, he said
like he couldn't be in Miami because the end, the
NBA has been on his ass about missing games, right, yes,
so why not just missed last night's game, go to
the retirement ceremony, and then playing tonight's game. That actually
would have made more sense because tonight is a road
game against the Utah Jazz, so you would be I
(22:36):
always think that the if the Stars are gonna sit out,
they should sit out home games, and that would have
been that would have made more sense, at least for
the league. Maybe they just thought it was a bad
look that he was at another game, you know, and
not playing with his current team. Maybe that's the reason
they just didn't want to the team. I'm sure I
do think that this could be a special case. But
(22:58):
you know, yeah, I also didn't love the and and
maybe this is and this is not trying to be
anti Lebron, it's just in terms of wording, I wouldn't
have won two two championships without you, I don't love it.
How about we wouldn't have won two championships? We we?
(23:19):
I wish you would have said, I still would have
won two championships if you weren't there. Just go, just go,
Chris Bosh. I'm sorry. Oh yeah, yah yah, yah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
I still consider Chris Bosh a raptor, you know. I mean,
he had more years in Toronto than the playing years
at least. But anyway, that was yesterday's news. No lebron
tonight for the Utah Jazz, the Warriors or against the
(23:41):
Utah Jazz. The Warriors have spended forward Jordan Bell for
one game for conduct detrimental to the team, so he's
not gonna play tonight against Memphis. News just didn't From
women's college hoops is Tennessee is fired basketball coach Holly
Warlick after seven seasons. Kentucky forward PJ. Washington posted a
video on social media showing him walking without his walking
boot in a pair of basketball talking a boot. Yeah.
(24:02):
Kentucky takes on Houston and Kansas City on Friday night
in the Sweet sixteen. Houston, He's a problem. The A's
placed first baseman Matt Olson on the ten day injured
list with the right hand injury well. Indian short sub
Francisco endor sprained his ankle in his attempt to come
back from a calf strade yesterday, so he had a
setback in his return. Jordy Nelson retiring from football after
(24:22):
ten seasons and at the w g C Match played
Championships Tiger Woods in his first round match against or Rotten.
His first round robin match against Aaron Wise is two
up and through six holes. We'll be back to the
Dug Gottlieb Show in ted seconds. But first, a word
from Farmers at Farmers Insurance. We know every windshield collision
has a unique sound. Beetle bird boop, drone seen it,
(24:44):
covered it, dr Farmers. Farmers under written my Farmers truck
Fire Insurance exchanges that affiliates products unavailable every state. So, um,
you heard Mike part talking about the Alliance of American
Football and uh, there's this story from the a F
that apparently they need some cash and need it in
(25:07):
a hurry. Um, the a F is in jeopardy this
per Majority owner of the Alliance of American Football, Tom Dundon,
who became the a F chairman last month, told USA
Today in a recent interview that the NFL p A
is not cooperating with the a a F by refusing
to allow first year lead the first year league to
use NFL players. Remember, there was the story going back
(25:33):
two weeks ago that they had, uh, they had missed
they had missed payments to their players, and then you
had somebody right a big check to pay all of
the players first of all at the time. And I'll
tell you now, at the time, do you guys remember
when the a F missed the missed the first payment
(25:53):
to the players and they said, no, no, no, no,
it was it's a computing error. Right, Listen, all of
this stuff I have lived before in my life, every
part of it I have lived. There has never been
a missed payment in a minor league that was not
a computing error. That's what you say when you don't
(26:17):
have any money. I wrote that one out of the
wrong account. It's a bit of a computing error. Did
I not sign that check? Have you ever not had
funds for something? No one ever says I just don't
have the money, especially the first time they miss a payment.
(26:38):
It's always I forgot to sign it. Oh jeez, did
I not put the check in the mail? Sorry about that? There,
he Oh, it's the wrong account. There's a computing error. So,
with all the half and the bluster and occasionally the
network TV, network TV deal, what does this tell you?
(27:02):
It tells you the exact same thing that the G
League is going to experience. I've told people, wherever the
G League has better talent is a is a better
league than anything college basketball has ever put out there,
with two exceptions. It doesn't have the fans and the
(27:25):
name brands, and that fans are only there because the
name brands. All of you people who believe that players
name likeness image in college athletics is valuable more so
than what they're receiving in scholarship, I give you the
(27:47):
G League and the Alliance of American Football. Look the
Alliance of American Football. If they line up and they
play Alabama tomorrow, do you want to know who wins
the Alliance of American Football? Do you know why? Because
they got grown ass men who are professional football players.
They're like they're minor league ers that they would mop
(28:07):
the field with the college kids. Why because they're all
professional football players. They may not be the best of
the best of your college football team, but they're those
next guys like Johnny Manzel dominated college football, and yes,
off the field issues ultimately derailed him, but it wasn't
(28:29):
like he was killing the league. Why because a different sport,
in a different game and a different level of talent.
But why won't you watch the Alliance of American Football?
Why doesn't it have value? Because it's not name brands,
not name brands. This is the Tesla to Afford or
(28:53):
Tesla to a Chevy. Do you know how much money
Tesla is gonna make the here selling food cars? Not
a penny? Not a penny? Do you know why? It's
not a name brand. So they have all kinds of
inherent expenses and processes that they have to go through,
(29:17):
and it becomes increasingly difficult for it. They have higher overhead,
whereas GM and Chevy and all of that there. Remember
making a killing, they're making a killing. You can tell
me about your Scanese, man, Scanese make my wife's like
(29:38):
the scnes are shoes are great. Um, Nike is going
to make more money. Do you know why? Because they're Nikes.
We watched the NFL, true, because we're taught, taught, those
are the best players on earth. But we watched college
football because of the brands Alabama and Penn State and Michigan,
the coaches and the sidelines. Right. We watched the NFL
(29:58):
because of the brand of the NFL. All of this
monor league football. Oh man, this will this will be
the death of college football. Now it won't the only
reason that G League will survive is because the end
of NBA is willing to lose money on it. And
(30:19):
once they and five years, five years from now when
they can remember and and the NBA, by the way,
doesn't own most of these G League teams anymore. They
sold them off. Do you know why? Because they don't
make any money. Don't make any money, Like I even
(30:41):
heard that. I ever heard people, Oh the w n
B at these they should be played more money. They
should be if they made more money, but they don't,
so they won't. Why they play the summer because no
one will go watch him in the winter, no one.
And it's a good summer gig where women who play
overseas and they can make more money, they can make
(31:02):
more money, can come back and make additional cash. That's
why it works. I mean, I read some article about
the the the w NBA's Liberty who moved out of
Madison Square Garden a couple of years ago. They play
in Westchester and they're now owned partially by the people
who own the Brooklyn Brooklyn Nets or on Barclay Centers.
(31:25):
Like why are they play in Barclay Center. Do you
know why, Because it's freaking expensive and it will be
empty and it will lose money. Like, these are businesses, folks,
They're run like a business. They're like, well, college football
has run like but it's like no, not really, not really.
They don't have pay taxes like they do in the
real world, and so in the agreement to not pay taxes,
(31:49):
they agreed to spread that spread that money around. But
the easiest point is the reason that more people are
watching ledge basketball in this tournament is because the brand
names continue to survive and thrive. North Carolina, Kentucky Duke
still right there. Those are three of the five biggest
(32:11):
brands in the sport. You substitute in players and his
Zion a thing. Absolutely do people watch Scion, sure, but
he has played in exactly two of the n c
A Tournament games too. The brands have the value. That's
the reason people aren't watching the a f That's why
(32:32):
they can't make money on it. That's why they'll ultimately
lose money on it, and it will probably fold up shop.
The w w E is starting one on their own.
They're preparing for it. It may be better, it may
last longer. But if they don't have at least one
the players and then two if they're not able to
(32:52):
get help from the NFL, they too will die. Because
you're gonna tune in the first Thursday of the NFL
to watch the Packers and the Bears, not just because
of Aaron Rodgers, not just because of Khalil Mack, but
because it's the Packers and the Bears. They've been playing
each other literally for a hundred years. My National Championship

Fox Sports Radio. Every day at this time, we'd like
(33:56):
to gather up all the stories today, hand them to
Dan Buyer, and say, Dan, play a game. This is
game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. All right, this
is the yummiest read ever in America. Ready for it? Cool,
let's hear Little Caesar's you can get a large bacon
wrapped deep deep dish for only twelve dollars. It's wrapped
(34:20):
with more than three ft of bacon them topped with
pepperoni and even more bacon. Only twelve bucks and Little
Caesar's available participating locations, plus tax where applicable. Um, and
the little season you. Anytime you order pizza, you get
a second pizza. That's why they go Pizza Pizza. Right.
I showed this. I there's an ad for it somewhere.
My son saw it and he's like, yeah, that's the
(34:42):
greatest thing I've ever heard of. He's like, wait, wait,
so I get a whole bunch of bacon, a whole
bunch of pepperoni, and I get two pizzas and I
go yeah. He goes, can we get that for dinner
tonight and your answers for twelve dollars? Yes, what you
got done and done a little season is just on
the road from me. The game today, Doug, is real news.
Fake news, alright, real new are fake news that Kentucky
will have PJ Washington for Friday's game against Houston after
(35:04):
practicing today, that's real news. No, we don't know if
he's going to be available. We do know this that
he didn't practice, but he did release a video showing
him not in a walking boot and instead wearing basketball shoes.
But no practice today for PJ Washington. Okay, but we
don't know that he We don't know that he's not
(35:25):
going to play. Correct, but he didn't practice today, which
made it fake news. I got it, I got it.
I got It's a good point and and and as
much as I want them to be back in full strength,
it should be pointed out that I'm even reasonable, Like
cutting off the cast and walking is totally different than
cutting off the cast and running up and down and
playing college basket, especially when you have a pro career
to think about. So I think he'll play in the
(35:47):
Elite eight against Carolina um because that's not until they're
they don't play until Friday. Right, Yeah, so today being Wednesday,
I I don't I think he'll play limited minutes on
righty Friday. But Sunday is a totally different deal. Right,
So what happens is he probably has an individual workout today.
See how it feels, See how it reacts Tomorrow. Tomorrow
(36:09):
you go, you go a litt bit, you know, limited
in practice, and then Friday you play him a little bit. Saturday,
you see how it reacts. And then Sunday is when
you think about playing him. That's the game they feel
like they need him most. For real news are fake
news that Hornets card Tony Parker flew back with the
Spurs to San Antonio after their game last night in Charlotte. Ah,
(36:30):
that sounds like real news and they're spectacular. Yeah, you're
wondering why, Well, Parker actually flew back with the Spurs
and his former teammates because the Spurs are gonna honor
Manu Genobli during a game on Thursday night. Parker and
the Hornets don't have a game until Friday in l A.
So Parker was like, Hey, let's just fly back with
the former team and go to San Antonio. That's not
(36:50):
awkward at all, Right, No, not at all, not at all,
not at all. That's I mean, I I guess it's
like the ex wife and the ex husband, where you're
just you know, you're you're still supposed to be friends,
but still a bit awkward. Real news are fake news.
The Rams and defensive tackle and donmackin Sue are close
to terms in a two year deal. That sounds like
fake news. You are fake it is. G m les
(37:12):
needs saying yesterday at the annual meetings for the NFL
that they probably can't fit Sue in their budget after
he played on that one year, fourteen million dollar deal
last year. Uh yeah, that means listen, No, mckinsue is
everything you think. He is super talented but also very
aloof and he's a mercenary. He's gonna go where the
biggest check is. The biggest check is not going to
(37:33):
be there, especially with the money they had to pay
uh Aaron Donald, the money they had to pay to
Todd Gurley, and the money they're gonna have to pay
to the rest of that unit as they're gonna have to,
you know, redo a bunch of contracts. Real news are
fake news. The Arizona Cardinals are allowing cell phone breaks
during meetings this upcoming season. That's real news and the
spectacular something Cliff Kingsbury did at Texas tex says, if
(37:55):
the attention spans are waning during meetings, and maybe just
give him a time out so they can check their phones.
What I've been told is that this everybody does that.
Like everybody does the you don't bring your phone into
a meeting, and you know, we go for and it's reason.
It's also changes the way you practice, Like I do
it with little kids. I don't not there check their
(38:16):
cell phones, but I do. You know, like with my son,
we never go more than forty five minutes one on
one and then when we do. Last night we did baseball,
and you do like fifteen minutes fifteen minutes of of
a drill or hitting or whatever and then like go
get water, you know, decompressed, talk to each other. Just
people's attention spans aren't as good and the old old
(38:39):
way of doing it three hours, and it just it
makes people, it makes people that want to be coached.
Real news are fake news. A recent poll of random
MLB players says that Phillis helfielder Bryce Harper is the
most overrated player in baseball. Sounds like real news. Spectacular
Athletics survey at about a third of the lead age,
(39:00):
and when it came to the most overrated player, Bryce
Harper of the now Phillies one and pretty much a
landslide also got votes as the dirtiest player and most
intimidating player in baseball, the most intimidating hitter. I should
say that's interesting, that would make him not overrated, but
I I do think the Phillies continue. You know, the
(39:21):
thing about Trout that's different. Obviously, Trout's making gonna make
a whole hell of a lot more money. But the
thing about Trout that's different is when he's been healthy,
he's been the best player and it hasn't been close,
and his numbers have continued to get better. For the
most part, power numbers continue to do well, whereas Bryce
Harper's kind of all over the map. There. There is
a lack of consistency there, even though I think everybody
(39:42):
concurs he does have a world of town. You were
talking about bacon on pizza earlier. Real news are fake news,
Doug In addition to debuting the foul Pole, which is
a two pound chicken tender, the Texas Rangers are also
unveiling bacon wrapped chicken wings in their final season at
Global Life Park in ar LinkedIn is that real news?
Are fake news? Sounds like fake news? There, Yes, there
(40:05):
is a two pound chicken tender, and yes, if you
take in a Ranger's game in Arlington, you can enjoy
some bacon wrapped chicken wings. It's not a bacon like
big bacon rep turkey like, um No, these are chicken
wings that are debuting, So yeah, a little bacon and
chicken which I don't know. I don't know. Maybe maybe
(40:26):
the bacon serves is the crispy skin that is so
appealing as a part of chicken wings. But I didn't
know you need I do feel like that's redundant, right
like chicken wings awesome, bacon awesome bacon and chicken wings
still awesome, But I don't know if you need both.
This is game time. On the Dug Gottlip Show, there's
(40:47):
a pizza that I get in a place called Pitfire.
They have a couple of them and it's actually delicious
and wait for it, it's um Brussels sprouts and a
little bit of bacon and cheese. And when I like
I was trying to explain to my son and my daughter,
like wise is so good because you had a little
bitter bitter, bitterness and salt kind of combined along with
(41:11):
the cheese. The Lakers continue to look for their new
head coach, even though they still have a head coach.

those nice things I said about you. Forget him, Forget
all of them. It just took the day off, all right.
(42:15):
You boys can carry the show. Don't worry about it.
You had Mike Prayer earlier kind of explaining the rules
changes in the NAH Football League was great. Um the
story out in regards to the Lakers. The Lakers are
widely expected to relieve Luke Walton of his duties after
the season are reportedly interested in bringing on Dallas Mavericks
head coach Rick carlyle per mark Stein to The New
(42:37):
York Times, Now, it should be pointed out that everybody
kind of has their area and their zone are like,
oh and I love Steiny. Mike mark Stein is a
cow State fuller and a lum so any cow State
forward to news. He's all over, but he's also really
tight with the Dallas folks. Mike Fisher of four seven
(43:00):
Sports asked Mark Cuban the report on Wednesday, and the
Mavericks owner said a lot without saying much at all.
L O L, he replied. Fisher followed up by asking
if Cuban cared to elaborate. Nope, l O L that's
my quote. In other words, like, we ain't letting him
go now, there's a lot of weird things going on.
(43:22):
Do I expect Luke Walton to be fired? Probably? Probably,
That's the way it works. Coach takes to blame. The
next step would be general manager Rob Polinka takes to
blame before anybody ever really blames, you know, Magic Johnson
or Lebron James. And in fairness, Luke wasn't hired by
(43:44):
Rob Polinka and Magic Johnson, so most people thought he'd
be the first guy to be gone. But I don't
actually think Luke did has done a poor job. I
think the roster is flawed. I think he's made some mistakes,
But I think the roster being flawed, combined with the
little knee of injuries, has caused the Lakers to have
this sad state of affairs. Lebron got hurt, missed eighteen
(44:06):
games in addition the fact that for a good portion
of the season he wasn't the old Lebron James, and
they had a bunch of other injuries as well. So look,
do I think Luke loses his job? Yes, I think
Luke should lose his job. No do. I think the
Lakers have already started to plan and plot where they're
gonna go where they're sure. But here's the difference. Are
(44:29):
the Lakers the only job that's gonna come open this offseason? Nope,
but it's the one everybody's talking about. Were the Lakers
the only ones looking at making a move for Anthony
Davis or other big trades around the trade deadline? Nope,
But the only one that's getting we're getting information about.
Are the Lakers the only team to have in an
(44:51):
injured star player? Nope. James harden Start was was injured
to start the year. Prezingis was injured to start the year.
You look around the league, there's other teams that had
injured star players, but it's the only one whether's leaks
about who Lebron wants to play for, etcetera, etcetera, etcetera.
Every other team in the NBA operates in the shadows. Heck,
(45:12):
in the NFL, they operate in the shadows. Odell Beckham Jr.
Was traded last week. I remember I was coaching my
son's literal league game. My son has a huge Odell
Beckham junior fan. My dog is named Odell Beckham Junior
Junior true story, and the trade happens. And even though
(45:34):
there were rumors, even though there was discussion, the fact
is no one knew he was going to Cleveland, and
it seemed to blindside a lot of people. Right, there's
no blind siding anything that happens with the Lakers. Do
you know why Lakers have not master the art of
(45:54):
being ninja? Dad's ninja dads. If you've been a father,
you know that the number one thing that leads to
happiness in your household. Number one is sleep when you
have a baby. In our good friend John Ramos is
about to have another baby. He's going back from more.
(46:16):
Just didn't enjoy the punishment enough for the first two.
Give me more. And I love being a father, and
I don't require a ton of sleep, but my wife does.
And once children learn to sleep, even though some kids
can sleep through jackhammering outside. The second there's a creaking door,
(46:39):
or a barking dog or a meowing cat, or you
stub your toe, somebody's up at a time they're not
supposed to be up. And there's a reason they say
never wake a sleeping baby. Do you know why they
say never weak, a sleeping maybe because they're terrorists. They
are they're like the type of they're they're they're the
(47:00):
worst version of themselves. And then your wife is also.
She becomes sleep deprived, nutrition deprived, sanity deprived, and if
she doesn't get her eight hours, three hots and three
hots and a cot who it's not the same human being.
So you learn as a father to be a ninja dad.
(47:21):
What's a ninja dad? All right? You gotta get up
and get coffee and take the dog out. So before
you go to bed, and take the collar off the dog,
because you can be as quiet as you up with
a dog. Creak creak treat treat treat wakes everybody up.
Take the collar off the dog, leave it by the door.
Take the keys, make sure you know where the keys
(47:41):
are and put them by a place by the door.
But you're not done there. Make sure your shoes are
seated somewhere outside the door. Your cars parked outside the garage,
because you can get out of the house, but all
of a sudden you press the garage door open. It's
gonna wake somebody up, right, you get up. Can't have
an alarm, just gotta wake up on your own. Then
(48:04):
you gotta slowly one foot, then another foot. Better have
socks on because bare feet make more noise. Slide along
the wood floor. Make sure you know where the wood
floor has creaking spots. You're gonna brush your teeth, you
better make sure you do it without turning on and
off a faucet, and don't flush the toilet. And if
you're gonna pee, you gotta sit down to peace, sorry,
(48:26):
because it just makes too much noise. When you're standing up,
you slowly sneak out of the house, grabbing the keys,
but not making them rattle. Right you pick up the keys,
all of a sudden people wake up. You pick up
the keys, and you grab the metal to the key first,
(48:46):
the key fob. Second, you don't want to unlock the
car door to me or lock it too many times
when it goes there. All of these things allow you
to sneak out of the house, take the dog, go
to the park, get the cough, can come back and
and sometimes you're gonna get a text from your wife
where did you go. You have succeeded, You have accomplished
(49:09):
your goal, got out of the house without waking anybody up.
You should be championed as a hero. They don't. They
never say, hey, dad, thanks for not waking every everybody up.
It's pretty amazing. But consider the alternative. The guy who
rattles the keys, steps on the lego, Derek who left
this here, stubs his toe, dog rattles, everybody's awake, everybody's miserable.
(49:34):
And guess who doesn't get to get coffee in the morning.
That dad. That's who the Lakers are. Rick Harlow idea,
it's a good idea. Rick Carlo is like an offensive genius.
He's one NBA championship. He's really good with the players,
Willy Will really well respected. And let's be honest, it
ain't like the Mavericks are winning a championship next year
or so maybe you throw a bunch of money at
(49:55):
him and you say, what do you think? Same thing
happened lie week with the Clippers. I've told you the
only way in which you win a championship in the
NBA is if you ever respected locker room. And the
only way you have respected locker room is if you
won a championship. While it's hard, right, so who's won
a championship in the NBA? Doc And he wouldn't have
(50:18):
to move and he's with the Clippers. What do you think?
What about the idea of doc It would have been
a really really good plan had they not told anybody.
But the Lakers either can't help themselves or they're just
not the ninja Dad's and they're rattling their keys. Then
it's like, all right, we can't get Duck. Who else?
(50:39):
M M. What about Rick Carlisle? I like it. I
like it. Offensive mastermind beat Lebron once upon a time
in the NBA finals, really well respected, kind of has
some swag. Plus we pull out the legs from under
Mark Cuban's chair. I like it. Here's the only problem
got out became public because too much noise. You got
(51:01):
Jason Kidd who's openly opining for a job that's not open. Dude,
what are you doing. You can't go on TV and
talk about a job that's not even open when you've
just lost the last two jobs. And by the way,
the second you got fired in Milwaukee, they got better,
same thing in in uh In, in Brooklyn. I mean,
(51:24):
the Lakers, they just they mean well, I swear, they
mean well, this is me when I wake my children.
I swear, honey, I was just trying to go get
you Starbucks, just trying to take the dog out so
you guys could sleep. You have, but you woke everybody up.
These were all great ideas until they became public. And
(51:45):
this is the exact same thing as the Anthony Davis deal. Like, look,
do I think Anthony Davis is awesome? Sure? Do I
think he's a game changer for the Lakers. Absolutely, But
once he became public and everybody starts talking about it,
it's a disaster within your own locker room. Especially. Don't
pull it off, which they didn't. Lakers have to learn
(52:05):
to grab the medal on the key, leave the key
fob sneak out the door like a ninja. Dad. We'll
be working with the ninja skills of one John Ramos
for the next couple of months he prepares for fatherhood.
It just reminds me of when John Lynch took the
(52:27):
San Francisco forty Niners job. John Lynch during an interview
inter of your process, want to take issue with Jed Yorke.
Lynch's candidacy for the GM opening was a secret by
his design, and his name was never linked to the
search until he put pen to paper on Sunday. The
forty Niners communication staff made it a point to announce
(52:48):
the interviews with nine candidates, but Lynch's interviews were never
made public. I made a big I made it a
big deal to stay quiet. Lynch said. This was on
an interview with KNBR six eight in San Francisco. First Ball.
You know what I was doing. Part of the rumors
are things that fly out of that building, and so
I wanted to see can I trust this building? So
(53:08):
that was part of my thinking. Right, operate in the shadows.
That's what everybody does in professional sports, well not everybody,
everybody except the Lakers. NBA champion Dante Jones joins the show.
Upcoming next, who does he think can coach Lebron Lakers?
(53:31):
Who's his m v P? Did last night cemented for
Janice or last night cemented for Harden? We'll discuss coming next.

also an analyst on television, whether it's Fox, Fox Sports
One or here on Fox Sports Tradio. Kind of have
to spend some time with us here in the Doug
Gatlp Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, I want to
start with last night because I watched Milwaukee take on Houston,
(54:37):
and like it's one thing to force it's so funny.
I was coaching my son, or I wasn't coaching. I
was actually I was apparent apparent this weekend, which is
the hardest thing ever when you're used to coaching your son.
And he was guarding a kid that always right to
left cross over and he was watching and he saw
it too, and so after the game he did a
really good job on this kid, who was probably the
other team's best player, of making him go to his
(55:00):
right hand. He's like, Dad, I kind of opened the
gate for him, and he still wouldn't. He still wouldn't
go to the right. And then I'm watching last night
and for anybody doesn't know what open the gate is,
it's if you're guarding the basketball and say you're making
a guy to go to his right hand, if you
drop your left foot so far that you allow the
guy to drive to that right hand side, just you
(55:20):
don't want to let him go to his left at all.
That's how Milwaukee guarded James Harden, and he didn't shoot
the ball well, didn't play well nine of Does that
strategy work long term in your opinion, Dante, I don't
think I don't think so, because he's able to do
a lot of different things to the basketball and gets
his left hand, and he's so crafty would get into
(55:41):
his left hand. You've seen a lot of greats who
are able to be able to go one way and
and and and people try to make them use their
on the hand and still doesn't work. But James I
is not just one of those guys who only goes left.
He can he can go right, and he can find
ways to get things going going right. It just depends
on the night. And sometimes sometimes he as rough shooting knights.
But if you keep doing that countless countless knights over
(56:04):
and over again, he'll find a way to get to
something going right. Yeah, I I here's what I think
it does. Though. I think they found out that he one,
he always shoots a step back going right right, so
it limits his a little bit of his finishing. But
he's a great passer off his left hand, and now
of a sudden it limits his passing as well. I
generally agree with you that you give a guy enough
time against one coverage and he'll figure it out. But
(56:26):
it is it is interesting how he's such a good
passer but really a great passer off that left hand.
You know, you're absolutely right, and he does a great
job with his left hand passing. I think it was
a combination of yes, that's that's the scoutter report. You
want him to go right and do more majority of
things right. But then Eric Blesso did a good job
of being a long after letic defender getting under him.
(56:47):
Make sure to concentrate on on his deficiencies and and
and sawing him all night long. So it's a combination
of good defense and the scouting report and and as
a team, you had guys behind him waiting on James,
and I thought he saw the second line um of
defenders as much as Heed. He dealt with Eric Blesso,
Doug Gottlib show here on Fox Sports Trading. That's the
voice of Dante Jones. All right. So look, if I'm
(57:09):
pro Jnice for m v P, I sit there and
go like, hey, look, he didn't score as much, but
he didn't need He didn't need to score as much,
and he does. He helps you on defense, helps you rebound,
helps you in passing, he does all the little things.
I oh, yeah, by the way, his team won. Now,
if I'm pro James Harden, I sit there and go like, look,
if James Harden shoots the ball, well they win. If
he doesn't, they can't win. Case in point, last night
(57:31):
he would actually make the case stronger for James Harden.
You walk away from that game saying who is the
m v P. Well, you walk away knowing that Milwaukee
is a definite playoff and championship contender. He walk away
from that that's the one thing you're definite about that,
then you're still up in the air about this whole
conversation about m v P, because yes, the best team
(57:54):
had the best player on that best team. He is
their defensive anchor and he showed that last and they
are amazing with him on the floor on the defensive
side of the ball. But then, yes, and the true
concept of what m v P is, James is the
most valuable to his team because if he doesn't play well,
they don't shoot the ball well. And he has um,
he has a lot of control on whether they played
was as a full team. So you give it to
(58:18):
James Harden. I fluctuate every day, Like yesterday I was Jonese.
But then when you watched that last night and you
see how Importney is their team and them go and
you and you talk about it, and you hear other
people talk about the case for for James Harden. You
see how they went from the bottom to the top,
all on his play and all his will. Yeah, he's
made He's made the case in my mind as well.
(58:38):
So every other day I'm a different person. Today I'm
James Harden. By the way, you can you can listen.
You can listen to Dante Jones New Show with Steve
Hartman on Fox Sports Radio Sundays from ten to to
tend to to It's Doatlap show. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
Let's ull Let's get to the Lakers. I do think
it's a foregun conclusion they're gonna make a coaching change.
Uh Now, the newest rumor that that that the Mavericks
(59:00):
are laughing at his Rick Carlisle. If if you were
in the front office the Lakers in succession, give me
the three the first three names you would call that
you believe can coach Lebron James. The first three names, Well,
me and you're talking about before, talked about this before.
A Number one My first person I would call is
to ront Loeu because to Ron Lou has a relationship
(59:22):
number one with le front James. Toront Lu has the resume.
He's been the three straight finals, He's won a championship,
so he knows how to win at a high level,
and he is a coach like he has strengths and
weaknesses as a championship level coach. So he would be
the first person I called. I would I would call
Mark Jackson, Um just because his leadership style and the
(59:42):
way that UM he helped that Golden State team win.
And I think he learned some sometime, learned something between
now and and and and then, so he's able to
be a stronger coach. And I think he sees where
he could be better and try and push the team
UM to be able to be in championship could tension
and third Um, you got any name showings and I
(01:00:03):
can just create the third person because coach k Uh.
Coach K was never gonna do it. In my opinion,
I never, I never, I don't ever think that's something
that he wants to do UM to convinced coach K
to win UM No, Uh, I think it's a really
(01:00:27):
hard I think that what's working against Tyron Lewin, working
against Mark Jackson is that then it becomes this, Hey,
you know, it's Lebron James. Is all Lebron James guys
and what while that, while while that doesn't necessarily bother
you if you've seen the success, it's what's left when
he leaves? And can they get other free agents to
(01:00:49):
come there? Like what happens if they don't get Anthony Davis? Well?
I think you UM, I think you have to be
cotton civil what's there now? And everyone says that Toron
lewis Lebron's guy, and it's hard to win with Lebron James,
but he's done it on a consistent level. Like you say, um,
and I think that Tyron has the attitude necessary to
(01:01:12):
be able to reach him and just reach other players
of his caliber. Um, he's arrogant enough to to be
able to coach a star. And it's a level of
arrogance that that you and and self worth and self
value to be able to knock back down and and
and he's able to push Lebron James and get something
out of him that most people haven't been able to
(01:01:32):
over his career. UM. So you could say, is this guy,
but he has Lebron has a lot of respect for him,
and he listens to the leadership of him, And I
think that's big. And once you get your best players
UM in line and you and you get you had
his attention, I think that everybody gulse falls in mind
after that. But if you're looking in the market, think
(01:01:53):
Jason Kidd possibly could be third on that level, But
I don't think he has the coaching resume to be
able to demand the respect in the championship calibery coming
from two different places, UM, I think you can. You can.
You can interview him and see where he's at and
see what the philosophy would be. But um, coming from
Brooklyn and Milwaukee, two things that didn't work, Um, and
then they both got better after they left. That's a
(01:02:14):
that's a tough one to sell. Yeah, I I tend to.
I tend to agree with you. It is. It's a
it's a very very tough sale. Doug gotlip show here
on Fox Sports Radio. All Right, the last thing. Have
you figured out what's going wrong with Oklahoma City? No?
I haven't. Um, it's just it's well, Yes, it takes
a lot to be a championship by the team, and
(01:02:35):
and that's what you have to give, um Golden State
the credit to be consistent year in and year out,
and and to and to give the effort necessary to
be at the top. It's tough, man, And it's tough
when people start coming for you. It's tough when you're
not shooting the ball well. But to be consistent on
the defensive end and still be consistent on how hard
to play on a nightly basis that that is, that is,
(01:02:57):
that's the one thing you have to crack to be
in that top tier of team, and they haven't found
what works for them on the consistent level of playing
hard and playing defense on the night leave Basically, yes,
you're not gonna shoot the ball, well, yes you may
turn turn the ball over. But that adversity of figuring
that out, that is where what with what they're struggling
with right now. Dante also stuff, Man, I really appreciate
(01:03:17):
you joining us, um, I do want to ask you
a due question, m r J. Barrett, How did a
prote think ob I think he'll be even better. I
think him and is going to be better once the
floor opens up. It's hard as heck to play basketball
and college basketball, especially if you're a guy that likes
to drive. And I think, but I think r J
(01:03:38):
passes the ball, well, well we don't. We don't pay
attention that he passed the ball. Well, he makes plays,
um and he can create his own shot any rebounds
at a high level. So he's a rebounding guard, a lefty,
a guy who could put the ball in the basket.
And I think the the open court of the NBA
and the up temple Um style of play is going
to play into his favorite and I think he'll be
(01:03:58):
a huge asset to whatever team he gets because he
can score in a lot of different ways. Yeah, I
think the big thing, the big question, how is, uh,
do you consider taking John Morand depending on the team,
if you need a point guard over Zion Williamson? Well,
I think I think you if you have number one
to think you there's no team I think in that
in that scheme can justify taking John Morand over Zion.
(01:04:21):
And because even if you do need a point guard,
you probably need a power forward to what I'm saying.
And then if you take if you take Zion, not
his Phoenix as not like Phoenix, you play everything. Huh,
Phoenix doesn't need a wing. But they could put Zion
next to all those guys and you can buy it,
you can. I look, I I love Zion and I
(01:04:43):
think he's gonna be a great power forward, small ball center, right,
but Phoenix, Phoenix needs a point guard and that dude
is And and here's how it is expressed to me, like,
if you take him, you better be sure that that
John Morand is going to be a superstar because Zion
even if he's not a superstar, is gonna sell a
whole lot of seats and a whole lot of jerseys.
(01:05:04):
They're absolutely correct. And even if your Phoenix and you
picked and you take Zion with the number one, you
still have leverage to use um Zion. You can hold,
you can dangle, you can dangle Zion um in front
of the next bick and get John Moran as well,
and get another asset as well with them. Yeah, I
think it's gonna be fascinating. See anyway, Dante, great, thanks
so much for joining us. Great stuffing, appreciate it. Dante
(01:05:25):
Jones checking out Sunday's Sundays ten to two? Is that
Eastern time tend to East time? So is he did
do Pacific? So it's one to five East Coast time,
So buyer, I'm super confused. So I listen to you
on Sunday mornings. Dan Bayer joining us, Let's say, like
find out what else is going on sports? Your show
is seven to ten West Coast time, so you lead
(01:05:47):
up into that that new show, right, I six am
until ten on Sunday, But the last couple of Sundays
I've been moved to the afternoon. Me and Nick Bob
been doing some college basketball shows. It was awesome. He's excellent. Yeah,
we had selection. He's actually, no, that's that's carrying off that. No,
that's very fair. Nate Oates is an excellent coach, but
(01:06:08):
now he's an excellent coach with the Alabama Crimson tied
leaving Buffalo after four seasons. Oats, by the way, just
sound an extension with Buffalo two weeks ago. Now he'll
be coaching in the SEC. Some more college basketball coaching news,
Washington State hiring San Francisco's Kyle Smith to be their
men's basketball coach. Stadium Sports as Tennessee has fired women's
basketball coach Holly Warlike. Kentucky forward PJ. Washington did post
(01:06:31):
a video on social media showing him walking without his
walking boots and in a pair of basketball shoes. Kentucky
takes on Houston and Kansas City and the Sweet Sixteen
on Friday night. John Calipari told CBS Sports that Washington
did not practice today, so something to keep our eye on.
After he missed the first two games of the n
c Double A Tournament with a foot injury. Some news
show the NBA Warriors suspended forward Jordan Bell for one
(01:06:54):
game for conduct detrimental to the team. He won't play
to night against Memphis. Lebron James out for the Lakers
against the Jazz. After last night's game against the Wizards,
Meta Red wide receiver Jordy Nelson announced his retirement from football.
Spent eleven years in the league, ten of those seasons
in Green Bay, the last with the Oakland Raiders. And
some news from baseball. The A's place first baseman Matt
Olsen on the ten day injured list with a right
(01:07:16):
hand injury. Indian short San Francisco Lindor sprained his ankle
as he was attempting to come back from a calf strain.
So now I set back for land Or in Cleveland.
We'll be back to the Doug Gottlieb Show in ten seconds.
But first a word from farmers. We know every windshield
collision has a unique sound. Beetle bird, poop, drone seen it,
(01:07:36):
covered it, dr Farmers, Farmers underwritten my Farmers, truck fire
insurance exchanges and affiliates products unavailable every state. Doug Gotlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Uh, I've told you this was a
(01:07:58):
distinct possibility, probability, and then we heard yesterday, Um continued
praise coming out of the mouth of Cliff Kingsbury in
regards to Kyler Murray, who is a prospect, right, and
you're like, I've never heard have you guys ever heard
(01:08:18):
of anything like this? I sure as that happened where
you have a quarterback and you're do you just drafted?
Granted he wasn't the coach, He didn't just draft him.
But when you hear Cliff Kingsbury talk about Kyler Murray,
(01:08:40):
then you start to realize, all right, that's a rap.
Like you know he said, quote, it's more what don't
you like? Then? Do you like? That's what he said.
This is if you were married, you're married, and if
you're not married, well that's completely different. Right, It's more
(01:09:04):
what don't you like? When you watch him play? He
can run it, he can throw it. He's a competitor.
I was one of the best Texas high school players
ever to come through our state. I don't I don't
know if there's one thing you can pinpoint, he's one
of the better dual threat players uh ever to ever play.
(01:09:26):
You just want to make sure that you're thorough when
you have the number one pick that picks gonna change
your organization for many years to come if you're not
doing all your due diligence. I think it's a mistake.
I mean it's crazy. But if you're married, you're married.
(01:09:46):
If you have a quarterback and you're not interested in
a quarterback, you simply go like, hey, look, Kyler Murray
is great, he's unbelievable, but we're not in the market
for a quarterback. You know why, because we have a quarterback,
which brings us to where is Josh Rosen gonna go?
I thought Miami or or d C Redskins are in
(01:10:08):
desperate need of a quarterback and they need one on
the cheap because they still are footing the bill for
Alex Smith. But then they went and traded for case Keenum.
All right, what about the Miami Dolphins. Nope, they already
got their quarterback. The Jacksonville Jaguars, Nope, they got their quarterback.
Who's left. Well, you got the Giants who never solved
(01:10:31):
their quarterback needs last year in the draft and could
with a first round pick or a second round pick
this year. All right, here's Joel Clatt on the Undisputed
on Undisputed earlier today, talking about Josh Rosen's future. There
are three teams that I have heard and I know
are very interested in Josh Rosen. And that's New England.
(01:10:53):
That's the New York Giants, and that's the l A Chargers,
and and one of those have have already offered a
second round pick. Arizona is waiting for a first. I
don't think they'll get it with you. But right now
there's a second round pick on the table, so he's
gonna get moved. Just what's the price. I think they're
kind of waiting for the timing and ultimately what is
(01:11:13):
that second round pick? But I don't think that they're
going to get a first, which is really interesting right now.
Remember the Giants have two first round picks, which of
course makes Arizona think they can get one of them
for Josh Rosen. The Newingham Patriots have one, but it's
way back in the first round because they're the doing
A Patriots, and so to do the l A Chargers.
(01:11:36):
The Chargers, Patriots, and Giants all have quarterbacks, you know,
who are from the same era and are one hit
or you know, maybe maybe maybe a year or maybe
two or maybe half year away from needing a quarterback
becomes really, really, really interesting. And while Josh Rosen can
(01:12:01):
be a little bit prickly and Ken Rudd rubbed guys
the wrong way, the fact is that he would either
be behind Tom Brady, who many people believe is the
greatest of all time, or behind Philip Rivers, who's absolutely beloved,
or behind Eli Manning, who has won two Sir Bowls
and is not so quick to give up his starting
quarterback crown. All three of those would work and make sense.
(01:12:24):
But what could they get for him? This from Ralph
Acciano and NFL Insider for s n Y. The Giants
are planning to investigate every possible option when it comes
to finding quarterbacks, including Josh Rosen. There's one thing at
the moment, they have no idea if Josh Rosen is
or will ever be available. Multiple Giant sources told s
(01:12:45):
n Y this week that they have heard so far
are rumors that the Giants the Cardinals planned to take
Oklahoma quarterback Kyler Murray number one overall and put Rosen
on the block. There's so much smoke here, there's got
to be fire. And if there wasn't any fire, why
the hell hasn't the Cardinals come out and go, hey, look,
Kyla Murray is great, but we have a quarterback. We
(01:13:09):
have a quarterback. Skip Bayliss was not impressed with what
he saw last night from Janice and Harden. Give me
my thoughts next. Be sure to catch live editions of

Radio every day. This time we played for you a
portion him a previous show on Fox Sports Warner Fox
Sports Tradio. We call it Little Caesar As you can
get a large bacon wrap deep deep dish for just
twelve dollars. It's trapped with more than three ft of
bacon on top of pepperoni and even more bacon, and
for twelve bucks at Little Caesar's. It's available to participating locations,
(01:14:13):
plus plus tax where applicable. It's applicable as that happenswhere
some right applicable. It feels like I'm saying it in
far too like royal affection. No, that's right applicable because
usually people say we're Usually when you read it's where terms, conditions,
where they apply applyable. This is skip Bayliss and the
(01:14:34):
two MVP candidates he saw last night final. Biggest picture
takeaway on these two m v V candidates, I don't
love either one of them in the postseason. What happened
last night to me, just step back. I don't trust
either of these m VB candidates big game, big stage intangibles.
(01:14:54):
Their killer will, whatever that thing is, whatever that assassin is,
that Jordan's had will be had. We can go on
and on. K d has shown us in the biggest
stages in the NBA Finals, back and back m dps.
Both of them shrank under the magnitude of that game.
A nationally televised, pretty big stage game, a late season
(01:15:14):
m VP matchup, the locks of which we may never
have seen before. Right, it was great. I was keyed
up for it. And maybe they were both too keyed
up because they shrank in the spotlight. How don't they
shrank in the spotlight? Look, you, honest is not a
good shooter, and James Harden is a super high volume
guy who doesn't play defense. We didn't know this. And
(01:15:38):
by the way, this is why the m v P
has never been a real legitimate discussion. It's we followed
the lead of really of ESPN on this one because
there's there hasn't been anything to care about in the
NBA in the regular season for the last past four
or five years. Right, It's been Lebron and the Warriors.
That's it, and where players are gonna play the next year.
(01:16:02):
And so we've created this artificial debate over who's the
m v P, Like who's the most valuable player? I
mean Lebron James said a long time ago. It all
depends on how you calculate value. Who's who's the best player?
Kevin Durant's the best player in the NBA, Kawhi Leonards
one of the two or three best players in the NBA,
(01:16:23):
and Janice is incredibly valuable, but many of the things
he does have nothing to do with scoring because he's
just not that good a shooter. He's a really really
hard matchup but offense, and then he provides you, uh
so many quality matchups on defense. He's remarkably athletic, versatile,
and he does a little bit of everything, although the
(01:16:44):
scoring is probably not the best part, even though he
can really score. So I don't disagree with what Skip said.
I don't know if it's trust, but I just think
that your flaws are more on display, and if you
don't have a a if you don't have a complete game,
it gets exposed more. In these we could call him
(01:17:05):
cologne games or clean neck games. Do you like that better?
Clean neck game? You know, when you're getting ready for
a big game, you gotta make sure you get that
neck cleaned up. You go out for a day, you
don't want like a hairy neck. It's neck cleaned up.
Whether you give the razor to your boys or you
get him get a little you know, you get somebody
to get some clippers going that last night was a
clean neck game, and no I didn't think either of
(01:17:28):
the two look like the best player in the NBA.
I don't think either the two are the best player
in the NBA. But but James Harden has shown himself
to be the best high volume scorer in the NBA,
and Joannice a Jonas's value is in every little thing
that he does. Also from un disputed, here was Shannon
(01:17:50):
Sharp reacting to UCF coach Johnny Dawkins calling Zion Williams
in a future Hall of Famer. He's a college kid,
can't He's thought with the projections, we don't know what
he's gonna be like the games, and this is where
we are. I'm you know, I'm looking at the next
guy to give that guy a bill in there? Skip.
(01:18:12):
Can we start with this? Well, look, I when I
took issue with Cowherd saying was that yesterday yesterday was
that Zion Williamson was one of the top twenty players
in in all of basketball now, which is ridiculous. Um,
Do I love that he called the hall of future
(01:18:33):
Hall of Famer? No? I think there could be a
smarter way to word it where you just say, hey,
he's got all the makings, like if Draymond Green has
a chance to be a Hall of Hall of Famer.
This guy can be as good or better. He got
a chance to be a Hall of Famer. But there's
no malice intent. You know, nobody thinks he's coming back
(01:18:55):
for another year, right And and there's he played for
Mike Tachevski. He obviously thinks the world a kid. So
here's a guy who he simply points out. I think
he's got a chance to be a special player. I
think he's got a chance to be a Hall of Famer.
That would have been a better way to put it.
(01:19:16):
But I'm not going to sit here and be offended
because he's only eighteen years old, that's all. And that's
what the Fox said. Say, Like, I remember the first
time I walked into Kansas practice and they had Joel
Embiid and Bill Selps, like, there's a future Hall of
Famer right there, And he wasn't talking about Andrew Wiggins,
(01:19:36):
who was on the same team. It's like, I've coached
a long time. That's what I don't necessarily know what
a Hall of Famer looks like, but I think that's
what a Hall of famers looks like. So really interesting
and I don't know why we're supposed to be so offended. Though.
The problem with Zion, and this is a legit discussion,
(01:19:59):
is he is tight five. He is only six ft
five and a half. And if he's what's he gonna
play at? What's he gonna look like when he plays
in a lighter weight And how long does his body
hold up? You know, you don't wish ill will upon
a kid, ever, but you're also reasonable about there's a
reason nobody plays at two eight five in the n
(01:20:20):
B A right your body, Just the pounding of a
hundred games, the pounding of all of the different cuts.
Look what it did to his shoes. That's the type
of pressure he's putting on his ankles. He's putting on
his knees, he's putting on his hips, he's putting on
his back. It's a legit concern. Whereas John Morant looks like, hey,
(01:20:42):
a better passing version of Russell Westbrook. Yes, so as
a head coach, and if you have the head coach,
one of the things you would say is I love you.
You're great. Probably need to lose some weight as we
get into this NBA. First, I think whoever drafts him,
this is a GM president owner. Whatever, you sit down
and go, Okay, here's what we wanna do. We want
to devise a plan. You've got a chance to make
(01:21:02):
a couple hundred million dollars in your career, so we're
gonna let's find you the best chef possible. I'm serious.
And you're only going to eat what he gives you.
And then we're gonna put you with a trainer and
we're gonna we're gonna lean you out some like. Look,
I think that the kid plays at two fifty. Eventually,
(01:21:24):
I think you have you have a much longer, healthier
And he's thick now, and people are like, well, where
would the weight go, Like, his legs could be a
lot thinner. He's a thick kids. He's a he's a
thick kid. He's not fat, but it's not like he's
he's not like there's there's not room to trim up.
You know, the NFL is trying to make things easier,
(01:21:50):
so they made it more difficult. I'll explain next in
the Doug Gotlip Show. Fox Sports Radio has the best
sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our
shows at Fox sports radio dot Com and within the
I Heart Radio app search f s R to listen
live What Up Tug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. M
m m m m m m m m m m
(01:22:11):
m m m. We do this all the time. We
want to simplify things in our life. Your wife ever
gone through that? All? Right? Yesterday I came home and
my wife had a bunch of clothes or clothing out
on like hangars who was laying on our kitchen counter.
(01:22:32):
And I was like, what's all that? She's like, well,
I'm gonna go sell it at consignment. It's like, why
are you're doing that? She's like, but I hate my clothes,
So why are you getting rid of these clothes? She's like,
because I just I can't stand them anymore, and I
want to have I don't want to spend money, but
I want to spend a little bit of money if
I can make it on consignments. Like that's a great idea,
(01:22:53):
but um, like they have no use to you at all.
I mean, this is the thinking of guys and men
and women are just so different, right, Like literally I
would wear if I here for for a couple of things.
I own one pair of jeans. I just own several
(01:23:14):
different versions of that pairs of jeans, you know what
I'm saying. Like there's a company called a G and
they're they're like get a little bit expensive, they're not crazy,
and I usually get them, you know, when there's some
sort of sale. But I literally have the same cut
of jeans, like two different cuts of them, over and
over again. I probably have six pairs of jeans. But
(01:23:35):
it's it's I think one style is that style. Otherwise
I wear hoop shorts and a T shirt and then
I got a couple of different like button downs, and
I got dress shirt button downs, and I just wear
it like I don't know. I don't know if I'm
in style or out of style, but I feel like
they're always kind of whatever women are. It's a far
(01:23:55):
more difficult thing. But so what I told my wife
is like, well here's the thing. You're gonna go out
and you know, spend spend money, get new clothes. And
then it becomes even more you're in an effort to
downsize and clean things out, You're still gonna go back
and buy more stuff. You're gonna fill up. It's gonna
become more complicated, Like why not just get rid of
(01:24:20):
a couple of things, one or two things, and simplify,
because you can't. Every time you simplify, you like contract
and expand at the same time. Maybe the best parallel
is this, then a rule book. Have you ever heard
anybody talking about the rule book? The rule book is like,
(01:24:41):
take your index finger and your thumb and spread them
out as far as you can. That's how thick the
rule book is. Now, how do we think it got
that way? Well, we get we started with the premise of, hey,
don't change anybody's grades, don't pay your players, behave yourself,
(01:25:04):
act ethically, and perform on the sports floor, court, field,
et cetera. That could be on one piece of paper
like the Ten Commandments. Right, But then we start going like, well,
you gotta do make sure you do this, and make
sure you do that, and make sure you do this,
(01:25:25):
and make sure you do that, and pretty soon you
have this ridiculously thick rule book. So the NFL did
this the owners by vote of one for one season only.
This is a we're not doing a we're doing a
trial year by a vote of one to one voted
(01:25:46):
to change on past interference defensive past interference non calls
are all subject to review. Coaches can challenge these calls
within the first an eight minutes of each half. The
final two minutes of each half, those calls will be
subject to booth review. This rule changes for the two
(01:26:08):
nineteen season only. The decision, of course, comes after Sean
Payton said that the Competition Committee agreed to amend the
rule change proposal six BT, in which coaches would be
allowed to challenge offensive and defensive past interference even if
there's no flag. Here's what Roger Gordell had to say.
Our job is to get these right, and we should
(01:26:29):
use every available means to get them right, and replay
is a great means to be able to do that.
You know, I get that your job is to get
it right, but you're not always going to get it right.
You just don't know. One bats a percent nobody makes.
Steph Carey doesn't make a percent of layups, let alone
(01:26:51):
free throws, and of course not at three point shots.
And the least accurate testimony is always eyewitness testimony. So
if we thought they were gonna get it right the
whole time, why do we allow humans to make these
calls to begin with? Like, if we wanted to be perfect.
Let's let robots do it. We don't. We don't want that.
(01:27:12):
We want some sense of human error. We want some
sort of realism to it. And in an effort to
be to clean things up. Okay, now we've made non
calls of past interference reviewable. What happens, What happens if
there's an egregious clip that's not called, What happens if
(01:27:34):
there's egregious hold that's not called. We all think of
past interference as being ball is in the air, fighting
fighting for the ball. But what about a a pick play? Right, Like,
what's the most used form of offense in the red
zone to get somebody open? A pick play? So now
(01:27:54):
we're gonna have that be a judgment call, and then
in the last two minutes it changes how many any
time outs you need. All you gotta do is run
a run, a rub route or pick play or throw
one up into the end zone. And if it's even
close on pass interference, even if it's not called, it
can be reviewed, which cancel the game, which can stop
the clock, which can lie to get a play in
and personnel changed, and all of this because of one
(01:28:21):
blown call. Why can't a blown college just be a
blown call, right, We we were supposed to allow Drew
Brees throwing a gutter ball on first down to be like, hey,
Drew Brees, sometimes he misses because that's what we were told.
All they had to do was run the football. They
could almost run out. They would have run out the clock,
(01:28:41):
essentially gotten down below one minute to go. Instead, Drew
Brees checked out of a play, got into a pass play,
and then through a gutter ball they ran on second
down and through on third down. And his throw wasn't
even good at soucie outside shoulder. It was inside shoulder,
could have been intercepted. But when Drew Brees makes an error,
you go like, well, it's Drew Brees. He can make
an error when a when a referee makes an error
(01:29:05):
in judgment, we change this rule, which opens up this
Pandora's box of Okay, even if we just keep it
to pass interference, and even if we don't take rub
routes into effect, we do know that sometimes pass interference
has caused by the fact that the offense will push
the defense to create space, then the defense will close
(01:29:26):
that space and then interfere with the receiver. Are we
going to review those as well, are we? So I
just feel like, in an effort to be more simple,
in an effort to be more right, we've made it
way more complex. You know, Now my wife goes and
(01:29:46):
she goes from not having I don't have any clothes.
Two okay? Now do I wait until I sell the
clothes and see how much money I have? Do I
go and buy things now that are in style? What
do I buy things that are going to be in style?
Or or what about the idea that I have this
(01:30:06):
gap where I didn't have clothes and I'm gonna buy
clothes now I got two weeks where I don't have
anything to wear, yes, Ramos Ramos from music music. So
another issue is the whole idea of pace of play.
You know you mentioned that briefly there, where it's just
sort of stopping and going and stopping and going. What
if would you feel better about the situation if the
(01:30:27):
emmett if the NFL put a time limit on exactly
how long they can review something, because that's something I've
always felt like they try so hard to get it right,
and it's all right, let's slow it down, let's look
at it from this angle, let's look at it from
that angle, if they just said, hey, you know what,
we'll do a review, but we're gonna give it a
(01:30:48):
minute and a half. If we can't decide that it
should be overturned in a minute and a half, the
call stands and we just keep it moving. Because sometimes
these things get so drawn out. That's the worst part
of it is from one angle, like the Julian Edelman
play the where he they thought he muffed the punt.
From one angle, it looks like he touched it. The
other angle, it doesn't look like it's You're looking at
(01:31:09):
it from seventeen different angles, and by the end of
it you're more confused as to whether or not you
thought he touched it or he didn't, as opposed to
just saying let's take one look at it. Okay, clearly
we missed it, or it's we can't even tell anymore,
so let's just go with what's on the field. The
problem with a time limit is, okay, so so give
(01:31:29):
me what the time limit should be, minute and a half,
two minutes. I don't mind the minute a half, but
again that becomes a time out, right, that becomes the
time out. Yeah. One of the things that I think
is tricky with time limit is this is when they
have to figure out if a knee is down. They've
got to take like different angles, So you've got to
(01:31:49):
figure out, you know, where you're matching up camera angles.
So I don't think necessarily that they're always taking the
time to figure out if the call is correct or not.
It's just like, Okay, if we see this camera angle here,
how do we match it up with this angle? And
that takes time, and the same thing of okay, what
down is it? How much time is left on the clock?
You know, where was the original spot? All that stuff
(01:32:12):
is just natural parts of replay that maybe don't necessarily
come into was the foot and bounds or not? The
sort of thing, you know what I mean? Yeah, no, no, no,
I got it just how quickly how I just and look,
sometimes replay really saves you. It saved the Patriots in
the Super Bowl, didn't it. That wasn't That wasn't. That
was the Super Bowl right where Edelman was returning a
(01:32:35):
kick and it looked at first at one angle it
looked like it hit his finger, and then you looked
at a different angle. Yeah it was Super Bowl. Um
a different angle. You're like, wait, no, it didn't touch
him at all. So I'm not saying that was against
the Chiefs. Okay, my bad, that was an f C
championship game against the Chiefs. You're right, So here's a
perfect example. The problem with it is, I just once
(01:32:58):
we're getting into judgment and things are so quick, I
don't know, is this like is this really what we
want to do? This really what we want to do?
Um And then you know, Mike Peryer joined us earlier
and he's like, wait, you've got people in New York
reviewing it. Why not have just an official? Who's there
add another official? I don't know. I think it's a
(01:33:22):
really good game. I think it's actually a great football,
great sport. It's well officiated. They do make mistakes, they
are they have gotten better, and they're never going to
be perfect. And our search for perfect leads us to
that thick rule book to the n c A. It
just does just too many like got it understand the
(01:33:44):
basics of the rules. Occasionally they'll screw it up. Former
NFL general manager Michael Lombardi joins the show next. What
does he think about the rules changes? Plus Giants Pats Chargers,
Which of those teams does he think are most likely
to land the services of Josh Rosen via trade And

the NFL. He's my the Lombardi. He joins us in
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio Michael, what's
your reaction to Let's let's just start with the ability
for teams to challenge non calls and calls, past interference calls,
(01:35:13):
judgment calls. Do you like it or dislike it? I
mean I like it. I think there's obviously going to
be a limit. I think it's gonna be a work
in progress. And see coaches, I mean, you certainly don't
want to use it in the first quarter on a
fifteen yard game. I think it's got to be a
critical times. But I like the owners meetings this year.
I felt a sense of at least somebody was listening.
(01:35:35):
You know, the Competent Kissing Committee, which is supposed to
be the guardian voice of all things that are supposed
to happen on the field, comes up with this ridiculous
fourth and fifteen that they vote seven and one in
favor of, and they say there's no support for a
past interference overview site committee. And then we turned it
around and found the way to get that done. So
(01:35:57):
I was very I was very encouraged by that. Was
very encouraged by that putting that dog out of his misery,
Like we were Okay, there's that dog gonna make it.
I mean, I just want to make sure that dog's okay.
It's an Italian dog that loves to bark at everything.
So unfortunately I apologize. She has a big mouse. She
loves to get on radio. I'm not I'm not offended
in any in any way, Doug gott leaves you here
(01:36:19):
on Fox Sports Radio. That's the voice of of Michael Lombardi. Um,
what about the kickoff rule? Like, really smart coaches Bill Belichick,
who you've worked for before, Um, you know they find
ways to find holes within rules to help them. What
do you think the new kickoff rules where there's there's
no no wedges even two man wedges, only three guys
(01:36:41):
back beyond like fifteen yards, no run up to to
the kickoff? Like, how do how do smart coaches check
out these rules and benefit from him? Well, I think
it's gonna take a lot of dress rehearsal. I think
the key thing is to figure it out and make
sure you'll get penalties on it. The number one thing
in special teams, which we don't talk about, is hidden
yardage on penalties, and I think that that's something that
(01:37:03):
typically has happened because teams are not able to practice
the special teams as much as they need to practice them.
So I think that that's what's really got to happen,
and they'll work their way through it. I think the
good thing about the O t A days are is
good special teams. Coaches will figure out a way and
it will really become more of a space game. I
think you'll see less and less big guys on kickoff
teams because you're gonna have to cover a lot of
(01:37:24):
areas because without the wedges, you don't need big guys.
Doug olive Shore on Fox Sport Trader. There's also this
there's growing talk about the possibility Josh Rosen being moved,
and I think it's you know, like if if Cliff
Kingsbury wasn't if they didn't want to draft Kyler Murray,
I don't think he would say what there what isn't
there not to like, Like, you can tell me all
(01:37:45):
this about due diligence, but if you love Josh Rosen,
you say, no, we have a quarterback. We're finding quarterback.
I love Kyler Murray, but we're good at quarterback. That's
not the way in which they're selling it. So with
that in mind, Giants, Patriots, Chargers, who's most likely to
give the most in terms of a draft pick in
order to land them. I would suspect it be the Giants.
(01:38:07):
I think the Giants sent with their extra pick. They
now have some arsenal to try to find a young quarterback,
and maybe they like Josh Rosen coming out. A lot
of this is going to come back to what you
thought of him coming out in the draft, because if
you watched him play this year, he throws for under
seven yards per pass attempt, really under six, He has
fourteen interceptions, eleven touchdowns, doesn't really work the ball down
the field. Now, you could say easily that it wasn't
(01:38:29):
all his fault that that offense for the Arizona Cardinals
was bad, and then it got worse and because there
was no offensive line, it became more difficult to move
the football. So I think this is a genuine You know,
the one thing about players in the draft is once
the draft is over with, their value goes down a
little bit like cars, and so once you leave a lot,
your car is not worth as much as it as
(01:38:51):
the day you went and bought it. That's a little
bit like the draft. If they think they're gonna get
a one back for uh, Josh Rosen, I think they're mistaken. Yeah,
I don't think they're gonna get one back either, But
maybe they can get the Giants because they have that
second first round. They have that second first round pick, uh,
that that is in fact available. Who's the team that
jumps out to you? Now? Look free agency? It's like
(01:39:12):
what hit rate the team that jumps out to you
that you like their plan for what they've been able
to do in free agency the most so far. I
like the Colts because the Colts have wasted the nickel.
The Colts, they signed Funches to a big deal, but
they really haven't waste any money on They got Justin Houston,
another pass rusher to help them bridge the gap to
the next guy that they're going to get in. So
they've got some more experience on their team. And they
(01:39:34):
were a good team to start off with last year.
So and now they have the draft and they still
have a ton of calf groups. So I think what
they're doing is really smart. I think the combustible team.
I think you know, you read it, John Harball said
it today. You know the Browns are the best team
in the North. Handling expectations is going to be a
challenge for the Browns. It's gonna be interesting to see
how they do it. Yeah, and really comes down you
(01:39:54):
have an inexperienced coach who wasn't who wasn't a coordinator
for half the year. Now he he's their head coach.
If you were back in Cleveland where you've worked before.
How and you also have an owner who's shown himself
to metal when things don't go well? Uh, what puts
you in Now that you know who the players are,
you know who the general manager is, you know who
the coaches, how do you proceed in terms of getting
(01:40:16):
yourself the best possible chance to be successful. I would
be on Freddie all the time to tell him, Freddie Kitchens,
to tell him you need to be the biggest jerk
in the room. I mean, you've got all these people here.
Somebody has got to be the ringers. Somebody's got to
manage this situation. And it's only true your ability to
create a situation where we'll all work together. It's going
(01:40:37):
to be a challenging job for Freddie Kitchens to develop
team chemistry, to develop camaraderie. Because for all we talk
about the names on the back of the jerseys, the
names of the front always win. And I think that
that's the challenge that Freddy's gonna have is Kenny convinced
a team that loves looking at the back of their
jerseys to believe in the front. I want to ask
(01:40:58):
you about about the about the Patriots. They've lost Rob Gronkowski,
you know, and they've you know, they've lost Trent Brown,
They've lost some other you know, very very talented free agents,
which is what they've done in the past. Um, how
difficult do you think it will be for this version
of the Patriots, with this age Tom Brady, to get
back to where they were winning a Super Bowl? Well,
(01:41:20):
I mean right now they don't have Right now, they
need some pieces to fix in but they have the
draft bill, trade. I mean, the one thing about the
Patriots that you have to understand is is up until
the trade deadline, they're still trying to procure talent. I
mean John Simon, a kid who played in the Super
Bowl for the Patriots, you know, wasn't on their team
this time last year. You know, he had a significant
role in in in the game. I mean j C. Jackson.
(01:41:40):
They're wanting their their corner who was a college free
agent from Iowa made a great play in the game,
and so I think what they'll keep doing is trying
to procure talent, keep working on it. I mean, they've
tried to get involved with some players haven't been successful.
Whether it's Jared Cook, whether it's Adam Humphries. They haven't
been able to get that done. But they're in this
for the long haul. They're going to keep trying to
work at where they come up with it. Yeah, no,
(01:42:00):
it's gonna be Um. What do you think of the
Raiders now that some of that dust have settled, going
out and getting Antonio Brown and Trent Brown. I mean,
I'm really confused by the Raiders. I mean, they cut
a J. Mccarran's, they signed Mike Glennon. But if you
just wrote down John Gruten's quarterbacks and you try to
give it to an FBI profiler, I don't think he
could come up with a profile and what they really
wanted quarterback based on what they signed. I mean that
(01:42:24):
really the Raiders to me are like a fat kid
that goes to the supermarket and just start shopping. You know,
They're just throwing everything in their basket and we'll see
how it all works out. You know, it's just to me,
it's it's It's exactly what I thought with John bruten
was he doesn't really understand how to build a team.
He's more interested in adding receivers. I mean, the comedy
made today about Jared Cook is it's it's hilarious, and
(01:42:47):
people let him get away with it. You know, I'm
gonna miss Jared. You're in charge of the organization. You
could have signed Jared Cook if you wanted them. I mean, seriously,
a lot of people let him get away with that.
I don't know. Um, okay, what about the cow Voice.
Now the Cowboys, David Irving's out of football, they have
some issues in the defensive side of the ball. Uh,
they go and and and replace their slot wide receiver.
(01:43:09):
They have not yet signed Dak Prescott to an extension,
although most people are led to believe that that that
is happening. What do you think what the Cowboys have done? Well? Look,
I think the Cowboys. I think this is a coaching league,
and I think to think that Kellen Moore is going
to come in and be a really astute offensive coordinator
is stretching it really far. And Randall Cobb last year
didn't play very well. So you can sign them and
say we've got a slot receiver. But you and I
(01:43:30):
will be talking in October about the Cowboys not having
a slot receiver because Randall cop can't really play anymore.
So that's gonna be a real issue. I think it's
gonna come down to, you know, how well they play
on defense and what they do offensively, and I think
it's gonna be Everybody was complaining about Scott Linehan, but
I don't know what they've done to improve it. You know.
I think it's gonna be a challenge offensively to be
(01:43:50):
creative and move the football with a guy who's never
called plays in the National Football League, has never set
up a game plan before. I think it's a real challenge.
And I think the contracts other issues, the fact that
the Eagles will come back with Carson Wentz and be healthy.
You know, the one thing they have going for in
the Cowboys is they have the Redskins, which can't seem
to get out of their own way, and of course
they have the New York Giants and still believe Eli
(01:44:11):
Manning can play quarterback. Baltimore goes inside, mark ingram I
kind of like it. I mean, I I think he
has some limitations, but so does that offense. But he
fits within that offense. Am I crazy to really like
the Ingram signing? I like Ingram. I think Ingram is
a guy that can do two things. I mean, he
can catch the football too effectively. He's not a down
(01:44:32):
the field catcher like Tomorrow was, where you can put
him out of backfield and line them up and win
against the linebacker. But he can catch screens and he
can catch flat routes and then he can run the
ball powerfully inside. So I do like that signing. I think, look,
Baltimore has got to be concerned about where they are defensively.
They've lost some serious players defensively, and they've lost some
leadership defensively. Now they get it back, you know, they
(01:44:52):
get it back with Errol Thomas at free safety for
wet All, and maybe that will be an upgrade form,
which I think it will be. But still that front
seven of what they've lost, they've got to figure out
a way to get that back. And losing C. J.
Moseley was a huge loss for them. You mentioned Eric Weddle.
He comes to the he comes to the Rams and
everyone you talked to in football is, well, he can
really lying guys up, Like yeah, but can he actually run,
(01:45:13):
tackle and make plays anymore? Like yeah, Like, wasn't there
a reason he was going to retire? You know, it's
the great line. You know you probably hear this all
the time. I mean, we're in basketball season. They you know,
they all talked about this guy's a great recruiter, he's
a great recruiter. Well, how about being a great evaluator,
because if you could if you can't evaluate, it doesn't
matter how well you recruit. Right, it's the same thing
(01:45:33):
if you can't play, and it doesn't matter if you
get the guys lined up you're playing with ten. I mean,
I think well will certainly help them disguise the coverage,
but look, when when it goes to a game to
where they're gonna have to go cover a tight end
or there's gonna have to be a back that he's
going to get extended out in the formation. That isn't
gonna work. That's gonna be a very difficult challenge for him,
and that will be on Johnson to handle the other
safety in the back end because Wedal won't be matched

I am so tired, man, I'm so tired, so tired, man,
I just tired. Uh, I am so tired. You know
it's it's interesting. Last night was a perfect example if
it's like the perfect debate that has no real answers.
(01:51:14):
Milwaukee demolished the Houston Rockets last night and James Harden
was only nine of twenty six from the floor. Janice
Dena Coupo didn't make a three point shot nineteen points
fourteen rebounds. I thought it was like seven or so assists,
and he was completely and thoroughly dominant, but in an
unspectacular way, helped his team and boards, passing, running a
(01:51:35):
team offense, defense, defending the room, a little bit everything.
But it's not very good shooter, right, So it's it's
honestly fascinating to me or interesting to me that um
that if you came into the game with the idea
(01:51:57):
that Janice was the m v P, you left the
games saying, see, his team won by twenty points. He
didn't need to score tonight. When he needs to score,
he can score tonight. You look at his value. Whereas
if you're a hardened guy, as much as last night
he wasn't the best player on the floor because he
missed so many shots, you could sit there and go like, here,
you're talking about value. If he doesn't make shots, they
(01:52:19):
don't win games. That's his value. I feel like last
night did nothing to help the argument, but did everything
to help the argument everything because you a little bit
of who you are is based upon who you vote for.
If you're somebody who appreciates the finer things, the little things,
(01:52:41):
well then you're an endy, honest guy. If you're somebody
who only likes the raw dat of how many points,
then you take Harden. Personally, I'd say Kevin Durants actually
the best player in the game. I got no problem
with him when in the m v P and he
plays both ends. The same would be with Kawhi Leonard.
But I understand that's generally not the way it works.
(01:53:02):
If you want to sit there and go like, well,
the problem with Kevin Rant is that he's got Steff
on his team, Like what is it? Exactly? Is the
problem that's gonna take away from his points? And even
if that takes away from his points, like they still
won fifty games, They're gonna end up with the best
record in the West, the second betch record in the league.
And Kevin Rant is shooting from the floor, thirty five
(01:53:24):
from three, from the line, He's averaging a game in
thirty five minutes a game, and he's not dominating the
ball the way that James Hardness and those Steph Curry
is averaging one more point of game and shooting a
higher percentage from three and a slightly higher percentage in
the free the line. Steph Curry is not having as
good a year. But although you know, like, just because
(01:53:47):
I have another great player doesn't mean that I'm not
a great player. But if I'm watching last night, maybe
it's the type of guy I am. I'm a Janis
guy that didn't change last night. But I would guess
if you're a hard guy that didn't change last night either.
Ra Almost you a Yannie guy? Are you a hardened guy?
(01:54:08):
I'd say, ay, honest guy. Is it because he hasn't
won it before? No, I just think he's much more physical.
I think he likes to play down low and get
get dirty. I think Harden likes it kind of stay
away from people, even though he does go to the
line a lot. What about you, Ryan Music? Are you
a Yannie guy or a hardened guy? And I know
there is there are the other parties you can you
(01:54:28):
have third party? Um? Well, I think for just this season,
I do tend to go with Janice. Um. I just
think precedents tends to show that when a team has
as much success in the regular season as the Bucks
have had, and when you are their best player by
far and away, and and you know, it's not as
(01:54:50):
if we're saying, like one guy averages ten points a
game and the other guy is averaging like thirty five
points a game, they're pretty close. So I think the
overall success of the Bucks should be the determining factor
of who gets the MVP this year. Yeah, and it's
it's I mean by a mile. Now. I know how
hard and missed part of the season to start the year.
That's one of the reasons they struggled so much. But
(01:55:11):
I mean, like, look, the Bucks would struggle that much
if they didn't have your honest as well, Like that's
the way these teams are constructed. These teams we have
ball dominant guys. Uh, I know, we gotta break in
one second, just a quick question. Tomorrow is Opening Day
in Major League Baseball, and it's a little bit it's
not early this year. It's actually late, but that's because
the Final Four is a little bit late. Usually Opening
Day is the Sunday in between the Semis and the
(01:55:33):
finals of the Final Four. Is there anybody you're really
interested in seeing? Like anybody knew you're interested. Like it's
a weird year in baseball, right, Bryce Harper changed teams.
I guess that's interesting. Mike Trout resigned with the team.
We're not gonna see Kershaw right away. I'm just wondering
what your level of Like, what is the it that's
(01:55:55):
gonna make us watch all of Major League baseball this year.
I'm trying to think of that. We'll discuss that next.
Plus the highest paid player in the NBA could be
you'll find out next. Be sure to catch live editions
of the Doug Dot Leaps Show weekdays at noon eastern
three pm Pacific. That Farmers insurance. We know a roof
can withstand a lot, one exception being an airborne car.
(01:56:17):
I've seen it, covered it. Dr Farmers are farmers underwritten
my Farmers truck fire insurance exchange than affiliates products not
available in every state? Do Gal show, Fox Sports Trader.
He could you guys figure out anything that you're excited
about baseball season? I mean other than baseball. It's like
baseball yeah, well like yeah, I mean me, I love baseball.
I like baseball too, but it's like, come out in,
mustn't play baseball again? And look, I think there's more
(01:56:45):
young talent in baseball then, uh, then maybe there's ever
been ever been. By the way, reports that of San
Diego are shocker. Now stop me if you've heard this before.
Manny Machado, even with the new contracts still running out groundballs,
enjoy that, San Diego. Enjoy that. Let's get to the press,
(01:57:05):
the press, Dan Buyer, what you Honestly, I would not
want him to pull a hamstring on a groundball that
Johnny Hustle or some them, you know, like, why why
do that? Looking forward to Brewers Baseball, Yes, this season? Yes,
and you know, how about this the new look Red's
(01:57:27):
Yasil Puig, Sonny Gray in the Reds uniform. Let's see
what Cincinnati's got to offer. So so the teams that
were really good last year decided they didn't want Sonny
Gray and Yael Puig who are the to the Reds
are the worst team, and suddenly how the Reds are
supposed to be good? Yeah? Just you know, hey, at
least Cincinnati tried to make moves to get better instead
(01:57:48):
of just thinking, uh, Phil, how many Brewers can you name?
Ramos Christine Yelich? Yes, the hater the picture you're a hater?
Uh oh yes, yes, yes, yes, yes yeah yeah. When
(01:58:09):
black Garrow Jr. Gets called up with Toronto, that'll be
something to watch as well. But he's also not a
Milwaukee We were doing Brewers, I thought we were hunting.
Looking forward. Two weeks ago, Nato signed a contract extension
through to stay in Buffalo today, new men's basketball coach
(01:58:31):
at Alabama. I told you don't give up. Um, what
is it? Chris Rock says, a man is only faithful
as his options. But I look, Nato, it's like five
years ago. Was a high school basketball coach in uh
in Michigan, in Detroit, right, yeah, and then he went
to be you know, his assistant at at Buffalo, head
(01:58:51):
coach at Buffalo, now head coach at Alabama. A Watertown,
Wisconsin native. Yeah, smack dab in the middle of Madison
and Milwaukee. Next question, Clay Thompson got his wish Washington
States hiring San Francisco is Kyle Smith to be their
new men's basketball coach? How about that trade San Francisco
for Pullman. Well, I mean, look, he was in He
(01:59:13):
was in New York City at Colombia, right in the
heart New York City. Then he goes to San Francisco.
Now he's at Pullman, So yeah, some space for his kiddos.
Kyle's a really smart guy. Um, he was a Randy
Bennett guy assistant at St. Mary's and he's done done
well San Francisco. What's interesting is he's the first w
c C coach to get out of the w c
(01:59:34):
C and get into one of the Power five or
Power six conferences since Dan Munson in years now. Part
of it is Mark Fus never left and Randy Bennett's
never left, but it's made it hard for anybody else
to ever leave and get a better job. The Warriors
suspended forward Jordan's Bell for one game for conduct detrimental
to the team. Not any details on the reason for
(01:59:56):
the band, but not gonna be available tonight against Memphis.
Probably wasn't that good a guy to Steve Kerb. He's
probably had something new with playing time and attitude. Blazers
guard Damian Lillard's looking to sound a long term extension
with the team that ESPN reports, in total, could be
worth two hundred and fifty million dollars. Lillard still has
two years left on his current deal where sixty one million,
(02:00:16):
and the Blazers could add on another four years for
about two hundred million dollars for Lillard, who wants to
stay at the Pacific Northwest. Yeah, I mean, he's just
to say he's he's going to be a man of
his word. Now it's look financially beneficial for him to stay.
He's an Adidas guy. There in Portland. He's kind of
got his own team, Damian. Damian Lillard reminds me of
Tom brand In, the former of Vermont head coach, Like
TB why don't you ever move out of Vermont? So,
(02:00:38):
my boy, there's fifty states, Island one of them. Fair
point right, there's thirty teams, and Damian Lillard essentially has
his own team, essentially has his own city. If you're happy,
don't mess with happy. Unfortunately, nurkis of course broke his
leg and Sejean McCollum has hurt his knee. But they're
a pretty good team. Probably won't ever be a great
team to win it. But there's worse things in the
(02:00:58):
world than being in the playoffs every year, having your
own team in your own town. It is what it is.
Brown's co own ord Hazlim said yesterday that the team
will get into uniforms for that's been known, but she
elaborated a bit on the new uniforms, saying there will
be quote nothing fancy end quote, but claims they got
it right this time. So those ones that say Cleveland
(02:01:19):
on the front with the let's just call it high
voltage orange on the helmet, going by the wayside. They're
gonna go to old school Browns Ones. Yeah, they're like
they're like, they're like bobos. They're boring, but good and
Veteran veteran wide receiver Jordy Nelson announced his retirement from
football after an eleven year career. Tenne, which with the
Green Bay Packers, spent last year with the Oakland Raiders,
(02:01:40):
did get some interest from teams this offseason, but now
decides to retire. I love Jordie Nelson. I don't know
anybody who doesn't like Jordy Nelson. I do think this
helps the Green Bay Packers as they part of ways
with him last year with the with the relationship with
Aaron Rodger's like, look, he just he was we got
out of one year maybe too early as opposed to
one year too late. That it out there and pressed.
(02:02:00):
That was the press. Look got through a lot today.
We got a lot of stuff. Look, here's my thing.
I just we'll mark this tape and we'll talk about it.
It won't come to fruition until late in the season
and into the playoffs. I like the idea of getting
calls right. I've seen blown calls affects sporting events for
a long time. I just hate the unintended consequences like
(02:02:22):
