Speaker 2 (00:19):
Oh we have struck gold like the forty nine ers
did on Monday Night football.
Speaker 3 (00:24):
Oh yeah, boom, What up America? Thanks for tuning in.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
It is the Doug Gottlieb Show. Do you know that
the show today, Manzi is sponsored by DraftKings.
Speaker 3 (00:34):
Sportsbook Say what?
Speaker 2 (00:36):
It's an official sports betting partner of the NFL at
NBA Right now, use the promo code Gottlieb to claim
your special offer at DraftKings. Again, that's promo code Gottlieb.
At DraftKings. The crown is yours. I saw tweets last
night Rock Purty zero point five interceptions definitely taking the under.
The three interceptions cost me a fantasy victory.
Speaker 4 (00:59):
Yeah, Fury, It was an interesting first quarter. Those interceptions
happened in what three minutes?
Speaker 5 (01:05):
Yeah?
Speaker 3 (01:06):
Was there was there a bet on that? How closely.
Interceptions were going to happen.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yeah, and there are other ones that could have been
picked off.
Speaker 3 (01:13):
Oh yeah, totally.
Speaker 2 (01:14):
But what happens Monzi as we are in for Doug
Gottlie By the way, for those wondering where Doug is,
Doug's gonna be on with us in about fifteen minutes.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
He's a busy man.
Speaker 2 (01:24):
He's leaving the Virgin Islands with that fourth place finish.
As we signed off on the show yesterday, it was
me and Carry Rhodes Monzi. Doug's team was holding on
to a late lead against Iona and ended up pulling
out the victory, so they went two and one. Doug's
gonna join us in about fifteen minutes. And the conversation
normally at this point would be like, man, should the
(01:44):
forty nine ers rock Perdy? What's going on with that?
Jason Stewart, our executive producer, I felt that this was baiting, Jason,
that you wanted to talk about Christian McCaffrey's he on
your fantasy team? Is he at all on your fantasy team?
Speaker 6 (01:59):
No?
Speaker 7 (01:59):
No, no, no, There was no hidden agenda there. I
think there are two running backs in the NFL that
are easy to watch and fun to watch, and that's
Gibbs and McCaffrey. So as McCaffrey was having success, I
went on the group chat and I said, Hey, of
all the running backs, I like watching him. You know,
not all running backs have that kind of pizzazz.
Speaker 2 (02:18):
And I immediately made it about me because I just
shot it down because I was so ticked off about
losing a fantasy football game by six tenths of a point,
and part of that was them continuingly giving it to
Christian McCaffrey a couple of lateral passes that ended up
being runs and not passes on the play that could
(02:40):
have helped Rock perties total. But all of that conversation
that we have here, By the way, I told my
son before the game. As a Seahawks fan, he goes, Daddy,
who are we cheering for? And he loves it when
we're cheer for the animal teams. Okay, so Panthers. Of course,
he doesn't know what a forty nine er is. He
has no idea. So when like Rock already threw a
pass to Juwan Jennings and I was getting fantasy points,
(03:04):
I was like, yeah, he looked at me like I
was from mars.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
Yeah, because you were not cheering for the black kitty.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
I was. You know what I'm saying, Your words, not mine,
but I'd get it. He would probably say cat. He
would probably say cat. But yes, that's I thought we
were cheering for the Panthers. I said, we are like
we are, We truly are. But I it's tough to
explain to a four year old.
Speaker 3 (03:27):
Totally totally.
Speaker 2 (03:29):
But while we're talking about the forty nine ers, we're
talking about why I'm cheering for brock Purty but cheering
against the forty nine ers. There's a name that I
actually think that we have to talk about, and it's
Bryce Young. Because for everyone's little For as rough as
it was for brock Purty last night, twenty three to
thirty two, one hundred and ninety three yards, a touchdown,
(03:50):
and three interceptions, and he's got the big contract, it
wasn't much different for Bryce Young. Eighteen of twenty nine,
one hundred and sixty nine yards, He had a touchdown,
was picked off twice last night. And now, in this
era of talking about quarterbacks having one, not having one,
paying one, not paying one, Bryce Young is about to
(04:13):
enter an interesting crossroads of his career because last night
MONTI could have been an opportunity for the Panthers to
take over first place in the NFC South. To say,
Baker Mayfield's injured, don't know if he's going to play
in week thirteen. We have an opportunity to seize control
of this division. And what a way to do it
(04:33):
going across the country on Monday night football and taking
down the San Francisco forty nine ers, who were in
the playoff hunt in their own right. That could have
been a good tiebreaker to have, and instead the Panthers
offense just kind of falls flat on their face.
Speaker 4 (04:46):
Yeah, it's not great when you get three interceptions out
of rock party, but you're only able to get three
points out of it. That never looks good, right, and
especially where the one that he throws in immediate interception
in the end zone right after it doesn't look good.
But beating the forty nine ers was always going to
be a tall task. I think they were favored by
seven points, so it was always gonna be a tough
(05:07):
task for them. It wasn't that there's a chance, of
course there's a chance, but the forty nine ers have
been also trying to play for something despite all the injuries.
Speaker 3 (05:16):
And I don't know, Dan, you've.
Speaker 4 (05:18):
Heard me talk about Bryce Young, so you tell me
if I'm crazy, if I'm looking at this with like
rose colored glasses. But I at this point am not
ready to move on from Bryce Young. I think in
the three seasons that he has been the quarterback for
the Panthers, we have seen a consistent increase in production.
He looks better, even if it's a little bit, but
(05:40):
he keeps looking better. I know the last time he
did not, but we have seen him look better, and
the Panthers are winning every year a little bit more.
Who thought they were going to be right now at
six and six? I don't think anyone thought that. So
you are moving in the right direction. Is it moving
slower than you thought? Or are you just looking at
(06:00):
your current situation of the record you have and now
you feel like, wait, are we should we should we move.
Speaker 3 (06:06):
On from him? Are we better than we are without him?
Speaker 4 (06:08):
And I think it's just because they've had such early
success in the season that they weren't expecting that. Maybe
people are putting that into perspective, but in reality, I
would not.
Speaker 3 (06:16):
I'm not ready to move on from Bryce Young.
Speaker 4 (06:18):
I'm not ready to see if the grass is green
on the other side, because I don't think it is.
Speaker 2 (06:22):
And there's going to be a decision that the Panthers
are going to have to make. They're going to have
to do a variety of things because Bryce Young is
about to wrap up his third season, He's in the
midst of his third season, and there's going to be
a fifty year option on his contract that the Carolina
Panthers are going to have to decide this offseason if
(06:43):
they are going to pick up. And the reason why
I think that this conversation is so unique, Mancy, is
not because it's unique to the Carolina Panthers, but the
Carolina Panthers are in a situation that I'm going to
say that they're sandwiched between the Miami Dolphins and the
Minnesota Vikings. Okay, And the reason I say that is
is this the head coaches of both of those teams,
(07:03):
Minnesota and Miami, are thought to be very offensive minded coaches.
Kevin O'Connell we're talking about is the quarterback whisper right,
Mike McDaniel has squeezed as much juice as you can
out of to a tongue of Iloa. And right now,
with the Dolphins season likely being over, but they've showed
(07:24):
life as of late, you got to give credit to
McDaniel because he hasn't lost the locker room. If JJ
McCarthy doesn't work out in Minnesota with Kevin O'Connell, who's
he gonna work out for? I have no idea. And
Dave Canalis being the head coach of the Panthers is
kind of like Kevin O'Connell in this scenario where you've
(07:46):
got a guy who fixed Gino Smith. Now look at
Gino Smith without Dave Canallis. Baker Mayfield helped him in Tampa,
which is the reason why Dave Canallis got the job.
So if there's anybody there to help Bryce Young reached
his highest heights, it's Dave Canalis and that's the reason
that he was hired. I would lean towards your point
(08:08):
of keeping Bryce Young because you have the quarterback guru
that you would want with him. I would just be
hesitant to commit the money that the Dolphins did to Tua.
So I think that there was a commitment that the
Dolphins were hiring Mike McDaniel. You're going to fix Tua,
and he did and they ended up paying him. I'm
trying to push that cart down the road, whether it
(08:29):
be with franchise tags, whether it be picking up the
fifth year option, whether it be doing something with Jordan
Love or with Bryce Young that the Packers did with
Jordan Love. I agree like Bryce Young needs more time,
but you can't make a financial, enormous financial commitment because
of what happened last night.
Speaker 4 (08:45):
I totally agree with you, And I feel like Bryce
Young knows that he is not a top ten court,
you know what I'm saying, Like he knows what he
is right now in.
Speaker 3 (08:56):
Relation to other quarterbacks in the league.
Speaker 4 (08:58):
But I just think his his progress has shown that,
like he's not just out there kind of hoping something
is going to work out. It looks like he's actually
playing the quarterback position, which is something that Tom Brady
has talked about. That's like you don't see that anymore.
It takes some time to get there, right. We're literally
seeing how some quarterbacks like Sam Darnold have revitalized their
(09:20):
career later on. So it's like it's still early, but
he's showing you to me all of the right moves
that I would want as a as a you know,
general manager, as a coach.
Speaker 3 (09:30):
He's doing all the right things.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Is it moving slower than others, Sure, but he's moving
in the right direction.
Speaker 3 (09:36):
So I would not.
Speaker 4 (09:38):
Give him a giant deal like you're saying. I would
work something out with him where it's like, we like you,
let's keep you around. What did you say that the
packers gave Jordan Love.
Speaker 2 (09:47):
Yeah, so when they ended up giving instead of picking
up Jordan Love's fifth year option, because they really hadn't
seen him at that point, they gave him a one
year extension to the deal that had a limited amount
of guarantees in the deal. He's like thirteen million guaranteed.
The overall value of the extension was like twenty two
million dollars, but it actually allowed them to see him
play a little bit. I don't think you would do
(10:09):
that if Carolina or if you're Bryce Young in that scenario,
your your option is going to be twenty six million dollars.
That's about the value of it. But you've you've shown
that we're a week and a half removed from him
for throwing for four hundred and forty some yards and
it come from behind victory so it's there. The ultimate question, though,
because I think that you were hitting on it there
(10:33):
where do you think his ultimate ultimate peak?
Speaker 5 (10:36):
Is?
Speaker 2 (10:37):
Do you think that Bryce Young can be a top
five quarterback in the National Football League? And I'm not
telling you to name five other quarterbacks, but we're talking
about a group that has Josh Daniels, that who knows,
may have Drake may in it very soon. We thought
that James Daniels was there. You know, we're talking Joe
Burrow class. Do you think Bryce Young can reach those
those levels?
Speaker 4 (10:57):
I right now am not to say that he could
be a top five, but I'm willing to say that
I think he could be around a top ten, you know,
a quarterback that can take you far and can help
you win.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Yes, And I think that you're saying, let's let's do
the Sam Donald thing, but let's keep you in Carolina.
Speaker 3 (11:14):
Yes, let's keep you here. You know our system, you
know what we've been working on.
Speaker 4 (11:17):
I think at this point you would look at the
Panthers season and already say this season was a success.
Would you not like for them being at this point,
they're probably already like we're good, We've done. We have
over exceeded our expectations for this season, so why would
you not continue to build on it at least for
the next one or two years. Now, Let's say let's
(11:38):
say that the Panthers sneak into the playoffs as a
seventh seed this year and the same thing next year
and they get wiped out in the first round. Let's
say that happens back to back seasons. Then maybe I'm
reassessing my situation.
Speaker 2 (11:50):
But right now, that would be a too a situation, correct.
That would be honestly be a situation where Tua got
him to the wild card round and that's as far
as the Dolphins could end up getting, and you just
wouldn't want to commit that money to Bryce Young, right,
This is why I would absolutely slow play it. Bryce
Young's best years in the NFL could come in a sixth, seventh,
and eighth year. I don't think he's ever going to
be a top five quarterback. Agree, I don't think he
(12:11):
has to be. Regal Dad getting six carries last night
was one of the reasons why Carolina lost that football game.
Speaker 3 (12:17):
Yeah, that didn't make a lot of sense to me.
Speaker 2 (12:18):
I didn't have the football. The turnovers hurt him as well,
but yeah, it just it was. That's like, that's a reason.
But when we're looking at the broad scape of it,
I think last night in a standalone game. I don't
know how many people watched what he did against Atlanta
in the comeback. This is a standalone game, and you
watch him throw two interceptions and get pressured, and you're like, ah, gosh,
Bryce Young, isn't it I agree with your assessment on it.
(12:39):
And I think of how we've handled quarterbacks previously was
we're either going to give him all the money in
the world or we're just gonna cut him loose. That
is not what NFL twenty twenty five is. And as
evidenced by Dnald, it's evidenced by the Vikings apparently wanting
to seemingly cut bait with JJ McCarthy. It's with the
(12:59):
doll even though that they were part of the problem,
still trying to figure out a way to make it
work with Tua just because of how bad that contract is.
There's all of that together. So if you're Carolina, keep
Bryce Young, if you want to pick up his fifth
year option, fine, and then franchise take him after that
or figure out a certain deal that would be acceptable.
I'm just not giving him fifty five or sixty million dollars.
(13:21):
I don't think he's ever going to be a fifty
five to sixty million dollars quarterback.
Speaker 4 (13:25):
And if he is good for you, you must have done
some really great things in the coming years.
Speaker 3 (13:29):
But I totally agree with you. Why we don't act.
Speaker 4 (13:32):
Like there is someone there that you want to invest
in because I don't. I'm not going to throw anyone
into the bus. But we've literally seen quarterbacks this year
that because of your quarterback play, you have not won
any games.
Speaker 3 (13:45):
The Panthers have won because of Bryce Young.
Speaker 4 (13:48):
You know, they're not winning in spite of him. That's
not the situation. We've seen that with other teams, and
so again, things seem to be going well, just maybe
moving at a slower pace.
Speaker 3 (13:59):
But h don't don't turn away yet. Don't don't turn.

Speaker 2 (15:08):
Let's do it.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Okay, we'll see there's rings.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
Being built around southern California. We just can't do it
tonight because tonight I'll be sitting at home watching hid
Oh no, don't remind my wife that it's Tuesday. I
know it's the finale tonight, right it is. I'll be
watching the special that is premiered on HBO the documentary
(15:31):
called The Shuffle. It's gonna be an HBO HBO Max.
It is the fortieth anniversary of the nineteen eighty five
Chicago Bears. And we know about the eighty five Bears
and their dominant run to a Super Bowl title, going
fifteen and one in the regular season, only losing to
the Miami Dolphins. But what we really know about that
team is the Super Bowl Shuffle. Now, Manzi is not
(15:54):
old enough. She was not alive when the Super Bowl
Shuffle was produced. Honest, Lee Ioa. Sam wasn't even alive
when the Super Bowl Shuffle came out. But it was
a big part of my childhood. It was even the
Bears were just a national phenomenon because of the personalities
(16:16):
and just their dominance in the NFL. I think it's
when you're talking about like twenty seven Yankees and you're
talking about these iconic teams. I think the eighty five
Bears in the NFL would only be challenged by the
seventy two Dolphins. I think for popularity and for the
lasting image that they left. Jason Stewart, would you say
(16:38):
that that's a fair assessment.
Speaker 7 (16:39):
I think the eighty five Bears probably even had more
traction because of the personalities and this song. And I
don't know if you were going to get to this
or not. I just kind of did a brief surface
level search on the song. It was made and released
in December of eighty five. They were doing a song
called the super Bowl Shuffle in December with still games
(17:04):
remaining on the schedule and a franchise that's never won
a super Bowl, correct the shuffle.
Speaker 3 (17:09):
Isn't there a.
Speaker 2 (17:10):
Dance the super Bowl Shuffle?
Speaker 3 (17:12):
No, a different one, the show.
Speaker 2 (17:15):
Don't no, No, that's a that's a dead end.
Speaker 9 (17:18):
There wasn't.
Speaker 2 (17:19):
There was the Icky Shuffle that was done a few
years later with Ikey Woods of the Cincinnati Bengals. But
the super Bowl Shuffle was a song that's to Jason's point.
They recorded during the regular season where if they don't win, boy,
imagine it. Imagine the Eagles, yeah, releasing a song called
back to Back and they don't they don't win, Like.
Speaker 3 (17:41):
Sure, okay, yeah, real hockey early correct.
Speaker 2 (17:45):
So the Chicago Bears released the super Bowl Shuffle. It
was a hit. He beloved it. I think I had
the forty five record and the video was popular. It
would play on MTV. It was it was, it was,
it was a Yes. They had a music video as well.
Speaker 3 (18:00):
Stop, so is this they hold on? Hold on? They
made a music video?
Speaker 4 (18:03):
Or out of this they hold They put a thing
together and made it.
Speaker 2 (18:07):
They recorded the song, and then to go with the song,
they made a video.
Speaker 3 (18:10):
Stop yes, stop.
Speaker 2 (18:13):
And Manzi, you're gonna see the video after you play
our Super Bowl shuffle game. You're going to be tasked, okay,
with trying to complete the line, kind of like the
Shazam game you see on Fox. Isaac Longcrown is at
the judge's desk. If you get the answer correct, you'll
hear A. Okay, if you get it wrong, you'll hear A.
(18:36):
So we're gonna give you the first half of a
line from three different players. All right, we'll give you
the first half of the line. Then Jason, Sam and
myself each have a line. Two of those are incorrect,
one of them is correct. To fill out the verse,
you're gonna have to decipher which is correct. First stop,
Hall of Fame running back Walter Payton.
Speaker 9 (18:58):
Sweetness, and I'm like.
Speaker 2 (19:01):
To complete that? Is it? Give me the ball so
I can stomp on these ants.
Speaker 6 (19:07):
Okay, Sam, running the ball is like making romance. Jason,
let's head to the club in my parachute pants.
Speaker 4 (19:19):
No on Jason's I don't think that one. I'm gonna
go with yours.
Speaker 2 (19:23):
Dan, give me the ball so I can stomp on
the ants.
Speaker 10 (19:26):
You like that I did?
Speaker 2 (19:27):
Well, let's hear it. Let's hear it. No, let's hear it. No,
stop it, let's hear it.
Speaker 9 (19:32):
Call the sweetness, and I'm like the dance running the ball.
Speaker 2 (19:35):
It's like, now we need the X.
Speaker 11 (19:39):
Yes, okay, it was my line running the ball. It
was like making romance. I tried to really get the case.
Speaker 3 (19:46):
He really did. No, that was impressive. I just didn't.
Speaker 10 (19:49):
Okay, all right, we iron out the wrinkles here in romance.
Speaker 3 (19:52):
Got it.
Speaker 2 (19:52):
But I'm glad that you thought stomping on the ants
because Walter Payton are running back right?
Speaker 3 (19:58):
Yeah, the well.
Speaker 2 (20:00):
The cam me sweetness and I like to dance. Give
me the ball so I can stomp on these ants.
Speaker 3 (20:04):
Did you just make that up by yourself? Nice?
Speaker 2 (20:07):
Yes?
Speaker 3 (20:07):
Nice? Nicely?
Speaker 2 (20:09):
Pants? Is also later? Would you say yeah around yet?
Speaker 7 (20:15):
So just just in case Mossy didn't know this, So
Walter Payton's nickname was Sweetness right and then, and he
ran to contact like he he He was the all
time leading rushing yards leader that Emtt Smith broke many
years later. But he ran to contract contact. He wasn't
running away from it. So to say that running the
ball was like making romance makes a lot of sense.
(20:37):
He loved contact, liked friction, he liked getting.
Speaker 3 (20:44):
Got it okay, makes perfect sense.
Speaker 2 (20:47):
The Bears had a quarterback that was a star in
his own right. Jim McMahon. Let's see how you know
Jim McMahon's verse the McMahon all right is the following line, Sam.
Speaker 10 (21:03):
I'm better than Marina.
Speaker 2 (21:04):
Just ask Dan, is it when I hit the turf?
I got no plan?
Speaker 7 (21:11):
Or is it I spent last night with Lynn and Diane.
Speaker 2 (21:18):
Jim McMahon animal.
Speaker 4 (21:21):
Okay, okay, I am I'm gonna What was your line?
Speaker 7 (21:25):
Dan?
Speaker 2 (21:26):
My line was, could you just play Jim McMahon's first
part against Sam?
Speaker 3 (21:29):
Yes, I'm the.
Speaker 6 (21:32):
MCMA.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
When I hit the turf, I got no plan? Would
you like to hear anybody else?
Speaker 3 (21:37):
I want to hear a Jason's one more time.
Speaker 2 (21:39):
Let's give a little Jim McMahon heads up to that.
Speaker 10 (21:41):
Sam McGan last night with Lynn and Diane.
Speaker 3 (21:43):
All Right, I like both of these.
Speaker 10 (21:47):
Do you want to hear Mini games?
Speaker 3 (21:48):
No, I don't.
Speaker 4 (21:50):
I'm there's no way he doesn't have at the marina.
Speaker 3 (21:53):
Just ask Dan the turf. I'm gonna go with Jason.
Speaker 2 (21:56):
All right, let's hear from Jim McMahon.
Speaker 9 (21:59):
I'm the punky m.
Speaker 2 (22:06):
Incorrect oh for two, Oh for two. By the way,
Lynn and Diane I thought were the perfect eighties names?
Speaker 3 (22:13):
Yes, say what?
Speaker 2 (22:14):
Okay?
Speaker 7 (22:14):
So I saw this this lyric and I'm like, who
is who is the damn Bayer referring to? And I
thought Princess Diane and somebody else in the eighties that
was relevant, and I couldn't find one. It's either Loretta
Lynn or Lynn Redgrave red Grave. That's a big one.
Speaker 2 (22:34):
It was actually just meant to be two groupy random
names that would have been twenty five named Diane and Lynn.
That's crazy, totally, Uh, Isaac long Crown, I know you
can't talk, but is any words on Manzi's OH for
two performance? So far?
Speaker 10 (22:48):
Very enjoyable?
Speaker 2 (22:49):
All right, well let's see if you could go one
for three.
Speaker 3 (22:52):
At least try and go oh for three. At this point,
you know do.
Speaker 2 (22:54):
You know William the refrigerator Perry?
Speaker 3 (22:56):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (22:57):
Okay, so fridge was a phenomenon, because I'll be He
was a rookie on Clemson. Yes, scores a touchdown in
the Super Bowl. He also had the finishing line in
the Super Bowl shovel. He had the last verse. Okay,
all right, let's hear from the fridge.
Speaker 9 (23:11):
You're looking at the free is the richie?
Speaker 2 (23:14):
All right, Jason?
Speaker 7 (23:17):
I may be large, but I'm no dumb cookie.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
You could bet on the Bears. Just call your bookie.
Speaker 10 (23:26):
We like toball and do it all for the nokie.
Speaker 3 (23:30):
Alright, Oh man, guys, this is difficult. This is Can
I hear him and then you say your line? Sam?
Speaker 10 (23:37):
Sure thing, here we go.
Speaker 9 (23:39):
You're looking the free is the richie.
Speaker 10 (23:41):
We like to ball and do it all for the nokie.
Speaker 2 (23:44):
Did Fred Durst steal this from the Super Bowl shuffle?
Is the question?
Speaker 3 (23:49):
What was your life?
Speaker 8 (23:49):
Again?
Speaker 2 (23:50):
All right? Can I have the fridge just one more time?
Speaker 9 (23:52):
You're look at the free is the richie?
Speaker 2 (23:54):
You can bet on the Bears. Just call your bookie.
Speaker 3 (23:57):
I would like to go with Sam.
Speaker 2 (23:59):
You think it's saying I would like to eliminated Jason right, alway.
Speaker 3 (24:02):
Yeah, some eliminated Jason.
Speaker 2 (24:03):
Yeah, because why would you say you're a dumb cookie? Right,
let's hear from the fridge.
Speaker 9 (24:08):
You're looking at the free I'm the richt. I may
be loved, but I'm no dumb cooking for.
Speaker 10 (24:16):
Oh struck out.
Speaker 2 (24:21):
You're the Tampa Bay Buccaneers of this Super Bowl shuffle.
Like you, there's just nothing. You're the opherfer.
Speaker 3 (24:27):
Yeah, thank you guys for putting this segment in the show.
Speaker 11 (24:31):
But Manci learned some things today. She did specifically three lines.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
And during the break, you're gonna get to see the
video it's it and watch the HBO special tonight.
Speaker 4 (24:41):
It truly is right I now, yes, now, I will absolutely.
Speaker 2 (24:47):
I am.
Speaker 3 (24:48):
We're going to create our own shuffle.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Other teams have tried. No, I don't think any sports
franchise or team has been able to match the greatness
of this song.
Speaker 7 (24:57):
Because what the Giants did the one in eighty six,
nobody remembers, and then the Rams did ram it in
eighty seven or something.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
Yeah, I'm not sure I even think that the Bengals
had one when they went to the Super Bowl with
the Icky Shuffle and the whole deal, but none of them,
none of it cut off to the level of the
Super Bowl Shuffle and forty year anniversary as the Chicago
Bears ended up winning Super Bowl twenty don the Patriots,
and that song then came to fruish.
Speaker 3 (25:25):
That's pretty awesome.

Speaker 2 (25:59):
You would think I don't know how to skate in
any way.
Speaker 3 (26:02):
Like no roller blade, No.
Speaker 2 (26:04):
No, no. I remember taking so the parks in our town.
They would take the ball diamonds and you'd put a
skating rink on a little warming house and I remember
sliding with my moon boots on that when I was
a kid. My have a big family, but my aunt
and uncle that we would visit the most. They have
a creek running through their backyard out in the country

and that would freeze over skate, but I never.

conversation it always is during Thanksgiving weeks holiday tournament. Doug
(26:53):
Gottlieb was fresh off of a tournament at the US
Virgin Islands as Green Bay took fourth, went to and
one to those games over the weekend. Doug's gonna join
us from the Islands in a bit Doug Gottlieb show,
Fox Sports Radio. She's Watty Belanos. I'm Dan Beyer joining
us now, fresh off of a fourth place finish at
(27:14):
the Paradise Jam on the US Virgin Islands. He's the
head coach of the green Bay Phoenix and the host
of this show. Doug Gottlieb joining us here. So when
one coach. Job well done.
Speaker 5 (27:28):
I mean I'm getting goosed ont here and thinking about it.
You know. I mean, what people who don't know our
sport don't understand is like it's kind of career. It
was like schedule aside what I what I did to
start to hear right at Kansas, at Minnesota, at Buffalo,
at Saint Thomas, and then to this tournament where we
(27:48):
were far away to the lowest rated team last year and
going into this year. So to win two, you know
against and to play as well as we play against
Yale in the first game, who won the tournament, it
was just awesome. And then you know, we were able
to do so with our leading scorer, Marcos Slo rolled
his ankle at the end of the Yale game, so
(28:10):
he didn't play in the two wins. And you know,
the difference in this year's team and last year's team,
as you know, Dan, last year we lost the Nations
clean scorer, Anthony Roy, and we just kind of collapsed
for about a month before I figured it out. And
you know, this year we've you know, we have, I
got a little bit more talent and just now and
came off the bench and gave us twenty seven and
twenty eight and back to back nights, and the guys,
(28:32):
guys just fought, just really really fought. And it was
a big, big week for us in terms of like
team bonding and then figuring ourselves out. So yeah, thanks,
thanks for the congratulations.
Speaker 2 (28:42):
Yeah, I think that I think that it's great. You
talked so much last year. Are you maybe overscheduled and
this year you were going to be conscious of it?
Has that worked out so far? Because I mean this tournament,
you're facing an IONA team that's picked top half of
Metro Atlantic. You've got UMass them an American they're considered
a top half program in that league. In the preseason, Paulie,
(29:05):
you just mentioned Yale their pick to win the IVY League.
Was this kind of what you had in mind in
terms of comparing the last year when you were playing
all those big, big teams.
Speaker 5 (29:14):
No, No, this year's actually this year's actually worse. But
now it gets It only gets better now because we
have the games spaced out. You know, last year they
were just like kind of earlier, this year kind of
stacked on you. It's hard to get them all in.
But you know, now we play Hasso Indyan Nations with
a non D one. It's a big game for us
(29:35):
with with the folks that are night of sponsoring it.
That's Saturday, and then we open up conference play a
week from Thursday, so we have like because you know,
like they get worn down and also you have to
kind of and once you figure your team out, Okay,
this is what defense they played, this what offense, this
is what the rotation or you know, so you need
(29:57):
some practice time and we just didn't have it last year,
and we are traveling so far across the country. So
we this year we're able to condense the travel Saint
Thomas and Minnesota one trip, you know this three games
one trip, so it was it was less taxing. But
the level of competition is actually higher this year. Santa
Barbara coming up still, Campbell come up still. But the
(30:19):
good thing is we have some space between games and
then next year we'll we'll still play a good group
of mid and high majors and then we'll have you know,
some more teams at our level home and road that
we can play. We just you know, you absorb some
of the previous and that it's actually two staffs to
go schedule. And then last St half, and it's it's honestly, Dan,
(30:41):
It's like when you're taking over being a contractor of
a house that's had like two other contractors, You're like,
we why they do this? It made sense to them
at the time, but doesn't make sense what you want
to do. So this year we were able to space
out some of the games, especially moving forward, and then
next year we're able to We're going to try and
space them out, condense to travel and play a little
(31:02):
bit more appropriate level opponents for half of a non conference.
Speaker 2 (31:06):
And I don't want the question to be posed in
a certain way because the whole nobody you crap last
year was just completely it was wrong because it wasn't
You weren't talking about Michigan Tech in that conversation. My
point with the schools that you played in the Paradise
Jam or that these aren't bottom feeder schools from the
worst conferences of college basketball, that these are legitimate programs.
(31:29):
I mean, we know UMass, we know Frank Martin, but
that is more of I was wondering if that is
more of like a test for you guys at this
point of your program tenure, that were these schools more
appropriate to find out where Green Bay is. Right now,
that's kind of my question and my point.
Speaker 5 (31:46):
I mean, like, you know, Buffalo is undefeated in the MAC,
and we felt like we had a good shot to
beat them. I didn't play just talent in that game
because he was not yet, not yet where we wanted
to be defensively. So maybe maybe I'm an idiot in
that sense, but yeah, I mean I really you messed, Dan,
I mean, you watch all of our games. Why do
(32:08):
we get beat outside of defense, rebounding, turnovers? Right, yeah,
and so you know again I think you mass out
rebounded us, but they're phenomenal rebounding team.
Speaker 2 (32:23):
But we were right there.
Speaker 5 (32:25):
We we didn't turned the ball over against them five
turnovers last night, won the rebounding battle last night. We
won the rebounding battle against Yale. So you know, like
when you're you can't just go by results. The process
of getting better defensively, getting better on the boards, getting
more secure with the basketball, it's all there, and then
(32:46):
we just we've thrown some in to win some of
these games. But the bigger point in terms of tests,
you mess. I mean, Frank Martinstein's played hard and physical
and last year's team probably would have wilted at some
point under the pressure this to not and then you know,
Iona plays a really really electric offensive style, and we
(33:07):
fell fell behind early like nine to nothing, not playing well,
and then fell behind again started second half. Last year's
team would have wilted this year's team to not. So
I think that's where the growth is, regardless of quality
of opponents. Yeah, those are good teams. They're frankly above
our level in really in good Major league. Weren't a
good major Major league, but you know we were. We
were picked three hundred twentieth in the country. So right
(33:30):
now we're playing better than that. But we'll see if
we can keep it going.
Speaker 2 (33:32):
All right, dono Jason Stewart wants in, but I've got
one more. And I'm just curious on how much it's
you take over the program in May of twenty twenty four,
so just of having that extra two months, having that
extra time to prepare the season, how different has that
been to be able to have like a full basically
a full year, to have your fingerprints on it.
Speaker 5 (33:55):
Oh, it's totally different. I mean my staff is different.
And again it's not like to take shots players of
the past or staff of the past, but like, what
works for me is different than I thought. What works
for Green Green Bay is a little bit different than
I thought. And then you have to really judge the
landscape and you know, you kind of got to get
a feel for who can play for you and what
(34:17):
you need and all those things. So and we're still
not perfect. We missed. We missed on some kids in
recruiting that you know, they're playing well elsewhere that we
passed on, or we didn't you know, we didn't go
hard enough on some of the kids. There's a couple
of ours that are not yet bought into what we want.
And but yeah, better, I mean, you know, I'm not
(34:37):
an idiot, Like I know that you need experience and
that it was it was gonna be hard with experience.
And then it's not just that it was in May,
but it was you know, Sunday and Twix did a
great job, but he was only there for you know,
thirteen months. You know, so again like you're coming in
and you're cleaning up messages. And last year we were
(34:57):
on academic probation and you know, every thing that could
go wrong went wrong. So yeah, I feel much more
confident and competent and you know, I'm bummed that I
didn't get to do the show while we're in the
Virgin Islands. But you know, I get all these things.
Like you It does give you a chance to reflect
and take a snapshot of it. And it's really interesting,
(35:19):
you know, because you know, some other players and other
coaches come up and like, hey, I actually listen to
your show. You're not doing it this week. Like, no,
the games at the same time as my show doesn't work.
So the whole thing is better and it feels more comfortable.
And yeah, I mean the ext it's not just the
extra two months. It's when you coach in college basketball.
(35:39):
You have a better feel for the portal, you got
a better feel for the fishing, and you got a
better field for schedule, you got a better field for staff,
your own players. How it all works, you know. And
also I haven't been doing it for forty years, so
I'm not annoyed by little things. Like all these things
are new and fun to me. So that part helps too.
That and I look, we were bad. You know, I
(36:00):
took a beating in the media. I'm still going to
take a beating every time we lose. You know, I
don't know how good we are ultimately. But that was
different than I thought it would be, and it affected
my players more than I thought it would affect them.
But I also think that the ones that came back,
part of it is they came back because they want
to prove everybody wrong, and we use that to kind
of fuel them as well.
Speaker 7 (36:21):
I think the one thing that I am in charge
of around here is I have my finger on the
pulse of social media. I am a good rip barometer
for the social media reaction to you and your team.
And I've noticed a couple of things over the last
couple of days. One of two things really quiet, really
quiet on the negative front, and then I've seen a
(36:44):
lot of compliments. And I'm going to say this because
you can't so all those jerks that were quick to
kick Doug Gottlieb and the teeth a year ago, I
need you to go on to your social media now
and get of credit when credits due. I know it's
only the first month of the season, I know it's
only three wins, but you can't kick him in the
(37:07):
teeth for an entire season without being like, you know what,
maybe I was wrong about this guy. That's what I'm
looking for, Doug. I know you can't say it, but
that's what I'm looking for. You deserve that.
Speaker 5 (37:18):
I appreciate, guys, been doing all shore radio all the time.
Speaker 2 (37:23):
We've done a little, Yeah, we've done a little.
Speaker 5 (37:29):
Well, Listen, I appreciate. I appreciate Jason. I would just
say that, like again, you know, nobody's when I do
in victory laps over you know, winning two games in the
Constellation bracket. We I know, my my coaches have really
really helped me, and I've gotten better. I believe we're
(37:51):
really well coached and well prepared, and I think our
players are better collectively better. I know there's you know
who knows. I think our league's really good. I think
it's gonna be hard, But it's a lot like the
Shador thing, right, like, hey, just one game the best
of the best. It's how much can you how often
can you do it? How consistently can you do it?
(38:12):
And the only way to shut people up is to
just keep at keep at it, and keep doing your job.
And you know, you can't control what other people think
of what you're doing.
Speaker 10 (38:25):
Hey, Doug, a quick question for actually just sort.
Speaker 5 (38:27):
Of a general without playing Iowa.
Speaker 11 (38:30):
Well, I saw that on the schedule. Maybe someday in
the future that would be nice. But how about this
the Holy Trinity of experiences from the Caribbean, your first
time down there?
Speaker 10 (38:40):
Can you give me one food takeaway?
Speaker 11 (38:42):
One's just sort of island takeaway of your experience in
the Caribbean, first time in the Caribbean.
Speaker 10 (38:48):
And did you have a carib beer?
Speaker 5 (38:52):
I did not have a crib beer, although I'm at
the airport bar. I might I mean, do I need
to I take a suggestion?
Speaker 10 (39:00):
Were just it's just to say you did so. It's
it's nothing special, but just just as curious.
Speaker 11 (39:04):
But I saw your I saw like maybe the foyer
or whatever it is to your hotel. It looked so gorgeous,
like look.
Speaker 5 (39:12):
We stayed at the Western. We stayed the West in
and I think it had been redone because I think
one of the hurricanes hit it. My brother last time
he coached here, he said, you know, hurricane and hid
it and so they didn't stay there or whatever. It
was spectacular. We never left the property except for practice
and games, and we didn't need to, so I have
(39:35):
no real experience at the same time as other than
the beach was amazing, the weather was perfect, that people
were nice, and everybody everybody for now on you when
when I tell you it's five minutes, I'll be home
in five minutes. Or I'll do in five minutes, and
five turns to seven or ten or twelve. Just no,
I'm an island times. I've learned that island times. I
(39:55):
got lave done. I feel like the most efficient guy
ever down here.
Speaker 2 (40:00):
I uh, let's wrap it up. I can hear the
announcements being made. I can't wait to see what's gonna
happen in conference play. But job well done on the islands,
and safe travels back here to the mainland bank.
Speaker 5 (40:13):
Thank you guys. Next time we do the island trip,
that's when we have to do the remote not in Kansas.
Speaker 2 (40:17):
Yes, agreed, all right, safe travels.
Speaker 8 (40:23):
Breaking news from Fox Sports.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
I Doug, Hello, breaking news. Let's go straight to the
news desk with Isai Longkron.
Speaker 12 (40:29):
The NFL has just suspended Carolina Panthers safety Trayvon Merrig
one game without pay for punching San Francisco forty nine
Ers receiver Juwan Jennings in the groin during last night's games.
Speaker 10 (40:45):
He does have the right to appeal.
Speaker 2 (40:46):
I'm calling it package gate. I don't know what you
want to call it. I don't know. That's what I'm
gonna call this package gate.
Speaker 3 (40:53):
Can you explain that for the people who may not
know what?
Speaker 5 (40:56):
Don't know?
Speaker 2 (40:56):
I don't, I don't. I can only do it after
ten PM. I can only explain it at that point.
Mary had a cast as well when he took the
shot to Juwan Jennings. The question is this is now
(41:17):
back to back weeks where we've had disrespected respect acts
on the football field between opposing players.
Speaker 4 (41:24):
Yeah, which is unfortunate because it's you just don't want
to see that. I mean, the spinning thing is one thing,
but I obviously do not know what it is like
to be hit there. Sure you know what I'm saying,
but it seems awful.
Speaker 2 (41:40):
What's worse? Do you think? Not pain tolerance because spinning
doesn't hurt. But what is worse? Integrity wise?
Speaker 4 (41:48):
I feel like a dude doing that to a dude,
hurting you in the spot where it hurts. That's kind
of worse because it's like, you know how much is Let's.
Speaker 2 (41:57):
Ask a dude. Jason stewartt what's worse? Spin on or
being hitting the package.
Speaker 7 (42:01):
No, I think if you're just doing disrespect and dehumanizing,
I think I think spitting is is close to the
top than other bodily fluids.
Speaker 2 (42:10):
But but guys play games like you do do that?
Speaker 6 (42:15):
You do that?
Speaker 2 (42:15):
Yes, nobody plays, you know, loogie games with each other.
Speaker 4 (42:22):
Yeah, the spit thing is complete disrespect. The other one
is I want to cause you pain because you guys
know that it's causing pain. It's like the easiest way
to cause pain.
Speaker 10 (42:31):
Yes, which kind of.
Speaker 3 (42:32):
Sucks, like you took it. That's an eat. That's a
cheap shot, as you know.
Speaker 2 (42:36):
We know it is.
Speaker 3 (42:37):
But yes, the spit thing is is definitely more disrespectful.
Speaker 2 (42:41):
But Jason, I felt like I cut you off? Did
I cut you off or you No?
Speaker 7 (42:45):
No, No, I think she's right.
Speaker 9 (42:46):
What she just said is true.
Speaker 7 (42:48):
And I think another man going after another man's jewels
is it's just a different category of not cool, correct
and bush league. But the spitting is just a great
than his Hell.
Speaker 2 (43:00):
Well, it's also it's also whack because you could shove him,
you could hit him in the face, so many other things. Yes,
but the ultimate side of disrespect is the.
Speaker 4 (43:11):
Spitting absolutely absolutely, Like you said, you could have punched them,
shoved them, but instead you.
Speaker 2 (43:15):
Went, I'd rather be hit in the that area than
to be.
Speaker 3 (43:20):
Spit on, sure, because it's I think it's degrading. I
think that's the word, and I agree with Jada.
Speaker 2 (43:25):
There's not enough parrel in here as well that would
be able to solve the spit being on you. Hey,
