great day. It is a Wednesday. That is a hump day.
It also means it's a day for the Midway. Oh,
fans of the Midway are coming out of the woodworks.

Learns k USA offers programs of all ages for all

that's story of the day. It's a pretty easy lead
that that. Oh I'm sorry from Isaaca Longcron that is
(01:13):
no longer the starting quarterback of your Miami Dolphins. And
you know what the hardest thing to admit is when
you're I don't know if it's just guys. I do
feel like it's guys. It's admitting you were wrong, right,
kind of a guy thing. And the most powerful words
(01:33):
that you can say sometimes is like, hey, I was
wrong and and when you're saying you're wrong again, I
kind of think that's what Mike McDaniel's doing here on Tuesday.
Remember McDaniel said its quarterback was not good enough, and
now they'll see if he's gonna get if they're gonna
get any better. The issue with Tua is like what
(01:57):
really improves? You know, they built this with unbelievable speed
where he could get it and throw it to a spot.
He's just not mobile. And while he's accurate, it doesn't
have the needed zip on it. And he just struggles
in cold weather. He struggles to move in the pocket.
And I think, obviously if he struggled postgame with some
(02:19):
of his press conference, struggled in his leadership, and McDaniel
and the Dolphins are saying they're wrong. But ninety million
dollars in whoo, ninety million dollars in dead cap money,
and sure, I'll take a little bit of a victory
lap right when I get him wrong. People go crazy.
How about when I get it right. I told you
(02:40):
I didn't buy into the two hype versus Justin Herbert
years ago, and I know I'm right now, and again
it's going to be up to other people to say
I was wrong. The issue with the Dolphins is now
some of it is. Yet you're going to have a
new GM. So the new GM's going to draft a
new quarterback and maybe he gets new coach because they
kind of had recovered. The defense have been good, the
running game had been good. The only thing that hadn't
(03:02):
been great the quarterback play. Can you pin it all
on the quarterback? You can't if you think McDaniel is
that guy. If you think McDaniel is is capable of
finding another quarterback, developing another quarterback, and rebuilding the culture
of this team. But man, that thing that happened quick,
(03:24):
That one happened quick. You know, he had a couple
of bad postgame press conferences. The team had started to
play better, then they play very poorly in cold weather
yet again, and Mike McDaniel had had it. He had
had it. And you know this is all of the
(03:45):
Dolphins saying we were wrong. And look, we could go
back and go. You know, it might not have been
the wrong pick had to a not gotten hurt before
the draft. It might not been the wrong pick to
have not gotten hurt early in his NFL career, or
(04:06):
the multiple concussions that he suffered where all of us
were concerned for his post football health and how much
you could actually play him. But all of these things
cause you to have to get rid of the football earlier.
If you don't move well, so you're a stationary target there,
if you have to guess and get rid of it
(04:26):
and throw it to a spot because you don't have
the arm strength of others, nor do you have this
capability needed that can do it. And then are you
a gun shy because you've had multiple concussions and everybody's concerned,
so your kind of you get rid of the ball
more quickly that can do it as well. Whatever the
reason is, Tua just has not looked like a high
(04:49):
level quarterback for a good part of the last I
don't know, a year and a half, two years, and
never has looked a part when they played in cold weather.
I don't hate to say I told you so. I
did tell you so. The only hard part is Tua
by all accounts, really good dude, really good dude, just
like I'm talking about, not if he's a good teammate whatever,
(05:10):
just a good He seems like a good human being,
doesn't seem like a mean spirited person. So there is
some sympathy that I have towards the position day and
you could sit there and go, how can you be synthetic?
He's gonna get if they cut him, he's gonna get
fifty five million dollars guaranteed. He already got ninety four
million dollars for next year, like all of these checks
have already been cut. Yeah, I understand. But again, like
(05:33):
he was at one point in time, they it was
tanked for Tua. Was that the alliteration Jaysu tank for Tua?
Speaker 2 (05:40):
Oh yeah, love literation. That was a good one.
Speaker 1 (05:43):
I know you're a big You're a big alliteration guy.
And now it is no more. And again, the the
mistake here to me is not in drafting him. Yeah,
you drafted him, and I I remember having discussions with
Tom Tullusco who joins us about him versus Herbert, and
he didn't have the choice. I think they would have
(06:04):
drafted to it. I do they would have they Herbert
checked every box physically, and remember he was a Rose
Bowl MVP. He was an amazing player, but he did
have a reputation that's throwing a lot of things kind
of laterally, which is sort of what Tua does now.
And for whatever reason, people weren't all in on Justin Herbert,
despite the fact he literally checks every box, every box.
(06:29):
But the mistake wasn't in drafting Tua if you evaluate
him as the best prospect. The mistake was the doubling
down and the contract extension. This is no different than
running backs. It's no different than anything. It's no different
than in life. You know, you get pressured to make
that call. Do you get married? Right? You've been together
for like a year and a half, you've been dating,
(06:50):
and everybody's like, hey, you're getting married, Hey, when are
you gonna have kids? Hey? And there's lots of guys
who have decided to go all in because well that
that's what people do. And I understand the philosophy of
Chris Greer again, if we walk ourselves back through it.
(07:10):
They decided they tanked for Tua, they decided to go
get him. Their first coach didn't think he was good enough,
they jettisoned the first coach. They wanted to prove that
it was. He had some really good moments under McDaniel,
especially early in his first year with McDaniels and early
in several different seasons. But the injuries, the concussions piled up,
(07:30):
and instead of admitting, hey, this might not work out
long term, they doubled down and gave him the contract attention,
and that killed the franchise. It just did. Here's Mike McDaniel,
head coach of the Dolphins. Remember he got the job
in no small part as a play color in San Francisco, though,
(07:51):
because I'm sure he convinced Chris Greer, Hey, man, I
can fix Tua. Take a listen.
Speaker 3 (07:57):
I think Quinn gives this team the best is to win.
You know, our focuses obviously to win the next three games,
but in particular, like I tell the players, we are
focused on beating the Bengals. So that was the motivation.
Zach will be backing them up and two will be
the emergency emergency.
Speaker 1 (08:14):
Third. Yeah, so this means that they're moving on from Tua.
They don't want him to get hurt, and they got
to figure out a way to make sure he doesn't
get hurt, so they don't owe him any additional money.
He doesn't have any injury claim, and they can if
they can't move him, they can trade him before the
league year ends. Here's McDaniel on how Tua took the news.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
It was, you know, a tough conversation.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
But also I think he exhibited what makes him a
captain and a leader on this team as he he
understood what that you know, means for his his contribution
to the team and how he's gonna help Quinn.
Speaker 4 (08:56):
Prepare for his first start.
Speaker 3 (08:59):
So so, you know, I think he displayed leadership skills
by understanding.
Speaker 4 (09:06):
But as a competitor, you know, it's tough.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
No, no, it's it is tough. And I think the
issue for Tua now becomes if he gets cut and
he has all that money and he suffered multiple concussions,
does somebody go all in and make him the starter.
Does somebody bring him in as a backup? Does he
want to be a backup? I think he does. I
actually don't think he has the makeup of a guy
who could be a great backup. You know, somebody who
(09:31):
everybody likes, somebody who has played has played well, has
a bunch of money, so he doesn't need the money, right,
He'll be a very handsomely compensated backup. But if you
look at these deals where people have moved on from quarterbacks,
it's almost always in that the worst ones are the
Danny Dimes the second contract, right, the Tua the second contract.
(09:56):
If you don't know that he's absolutely the guy, then
he's not the guy. That's the lesson. It's the same
lesson when you know you're thinking about Gary getting married,
If you're not absolutely positively sure, then you are absolutely
positively sure it's not her. And I know it does
sound trite, it does sound cliche to say she'll be
(10:22):
fine or he'll be fine, But that's the reality, you know,
just the reality if you're not absolutely this is the
and as has nothing to do with me, because like
my marriage was twenty years, like well, I was absolutely
sure and I was right and she was great. It's
just I don't need to get into my own personal problems.
(10:44):
But I can tell you there are plenty of other guys.
And we've all been at weddings where you're like six
months right. We've all had jobs where somebody gets hired
and you're like, oh, we've all seen players and for
two like the writing was all there, Like the Dolphins
kept trying to convince us, especially their social media team. No,
(11:08):
he really does have a good arm. No he really
is healthy. No, the concussions really aren't an issue. I mean, look,
this is a really minor one. But being left handed
is hard. Being left handed is hard. Go track it. So, first,
he was the first left handed quarterback since to throw
(11:28):
a touchdown, right, was it? Des Bryant was the last
left handed throw for a touchdown in the NFL, And
it was like ten to fifteen years previously, Mike Vick
was the last left handed quarterback. And he didn't lose
his job because he's left handed. He didn't lose his
job just because of concussions. He didn't lose his job
just because he doesn't have a great arm. He didn't
(11:50):
just lose job just because he's immobile. And he didn't
lose his job because, man, he really handled some postgame
press conferences, some acceptance of blame someone, It wasn't an
it's death by a thousand cuts. All of these things
don't help, and all of those things probably should have
been seen before. He's drafted in definitely should have been
(12:10):
seen before they re up to his contract. So the
Dolphins are in quarterback purgatory. Now they're gonna take a
massive cap hit and Mike McDaniel's future very much hangs
in the balance as they wait for a new GM
to get a job. This is the Doug out Leaves Show.
You listen to Fox Sports Radio. Have you heard about
(12:32):
the Trainer games? Add this to your binge list. Ten
athletes who go head to head for a chance to
win an I Fit trainer contract worth two hundred and
fifty grand, streaming on Prime Video starting January eighth. Look, look,
they could get Tyreek hillback, they could get to a back.
My guess is light a match start over? Light a
(12:56):
match start out? How many years do you have to
be sitting there below five hundred with a wide receiver
who is constantly constantly a problem plus noutcoming off an injury,
or a quarterback who you're worried about the next hit
and even when he plays, there's something missing there. The
(13:17):
Dolphins new GM, probably new coach, Light a match start over.
Speaker 5 (13:22):
This is the best of the dog Dot Leap Show
on Fox Sports Radio.
Speaker 1 (13:29):
Why then I got lives out Box Sports Radio. Oh,
you're having a great day. It's a game day here

Big day for you, boy today I got my Wisconsin
driver license yep, and equally big day. Equally big day.
Walked outside this morning it was thirty four degrees and
(14:15):
I literally said, huh, it's really nice today. Now keep
in mind that t minus. I don't know if you go,
if you subtract seventy two hours seventy two hours ago,
it was like minus twenty eight windshield, So that's a
feeling change of like sixty degrees.
Speaker 6 (14:35):
Everything is relative, Doug, It totally is okay.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
But if you walked outside tomorrow morning, Sam.
Speaker 6 (14:43):
Yeah, Isaac at thirty four degrees here and it was.
Speaker 1 (14:49):
Thirty four degrees, You'd be like, what what.
Speaker 7 (14:51):
Depends on whether it's cloudy and or windy, though.
Speaker 1 (14:56):
Now we do. If it's thirty four degrees in southern California,
people be losing their mind. The city which check degrees,
everybody picks up there, puts their the women put on
their puffer coats on and their ug boots.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
And they'd be paralyzed. So my parents grew up in
upstate New York. I've spent Syracuse winters. I know that
cold and stuff. But when things get cold out here
and when and when weather starts to happen, people are like,
I can't do anything. I can't work. That's that's the difference.
Like people in Green Bay right now are definitely out
(15:27):
and about because they have to make a living. But
pell in California take weather as an excuse to take
the day off.
Speaker 1 (15:34):
I can't know. They're literally like running outside of my
building with their shirt off, thriving the.
Speaker 6 (15:39):
Spring thirty four degrees and thriving thirty four.
Speaker 1 (15:42):
I think it's actually thirty eight. Now it's thirty four
this morning, and weather're on the ones here in the
thirty eight and thriving thirty eight and thriving thirty eight
and thriving. Why they're on the ones. It's the Dug
Outley Show. Hey we got I thought Jalen Hurts did
a great job of pointing out something called a trigger
word in interviewing a trigger word. We'll play the sound
(16:06):
for you. We'll kind of teach you about it. That
upcoming in I don't know fifteen minutes plus Daniel Jeremiah
Joints just we'll find out if he thinks TUA is
a starter anywhere next year, we have several of these
quarterbacks which are going to be looking for new homes.
Get to all that. But it is a Wednesday, which
is the middle of the week. This is the middle
of the day relatively, and it's the middle of the show.
(16:27):
Remember we got an hour podcast which drops as soon
as this show is over. Just type in Doug Gotli
wherever you get podcast, you can download it. Before we
get to that, we get to the midway. He's not
getting the middle with you.
Speaker 5 (16:39):
It's time for the.
Speaker 1 (16:43):
Midway, Jason Stewart. The midway is all.
Speaker 2 (16:50):
I'll take it from here. I'll take it from It's
the holiday season. I hope everyone's aware of this. If
you haven't bought presents for anybody, then you're selfish, but
I do want to give out. I want to give
out presents. I want to figuratively give out presents today.
Each of you need to have a sports figure in mind.
(17:11):
It doesn't matter anyone involved in sports. Could even be
a celebrity not involved in sports, but I just want
to give them a gift and just to kind of
set the tone of this gift giving session on the
Midway today, eight days before Christmas, I want to give
prophylactics to Stefan Diggs. Ah, now you're probably saying, you're
(17:34):
probably asking why would you spare Tyreek Hill? Say good?
Speaker 1 (17:39):
Can people call him rubbers anymore?
Speaker 2 (17:41):
I don't think you say rubbers on the air. I
don't think you could say condoms on the air. So
I'm going to say profilactics just to be safe and
then clean it up and edit. Stefan Diggs is going
to be the father four times this year this year
mostly Cardi B is going to be one of his
(18:03):
baby mamas. So I just assumed he just doesn't have prophylactics,
and I want to send him with a note to
be like, hey, I figured you could use these. In fact,
last week Philip Rivers was in the news and among
all the dad jokes was this very underrated joke. As
(18:24):
soon as the news came out that Philip Rivers was
officially signed by the Colts, I said Stefan Diggs quote
tweeted that news and said, why would you have all
those babies with just one woman? And the response from
the public was just like it was on the air
right there. It's a complete silence. You just want to
go back to your old dad jokes. I got it,
(18:45):
simple humor, got it.
Speaker 1 (18:47):
All right, Stefan Diggs, prophylactics, got it. Sam.
Speaker 8 (18:53):
I have a gift here for WNBA superstar Kaitlin Clark.
It is a GNC store or sized jug of Multi vitamins,
multivitamins from G and C and some Tiger bombs so
she stays good and healthy, not in pain, needs to
play the full season, needs to continue to lead this
surge of w NBA popularity, and you need to be
(19:16):
out on the court to do that. So a lot
of multi items and some Tiger bombs, so she's feeling
good and playing the full season and getting to the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (19:24):
I miss her, This industry missed her. She was great
content and great content. We totally ignored the sport YEP,
which it deserves to be ignored. But I miss her.
Get her back on the court. Please.
Speaker 1 (19:37):
That funny because I also have it. I also I
also have a a present for the w NBA. It
is from my old Martyn, Oklahoma State, but more importantly
the Spears School of Business, and it is an intro
to business and economics book. It's very easy reading. It
(19:58):
said one hundred class. And there's also a case study
on the NHL and what happened to the NHL in
the nineties when it expanded because Wayne Gretzky came to
the States and several franchises folded or had to move
back to Canada. They had a lockout, they had to
(20:21):
change their salary structure. They're now back fully healthy. But
again there's a big case study in the Spear School
of Business. It's it's a one hundred level class on
intro to business and economics.
Speaker 2 (20:33):
Now you got to be a little bit more specific,
because are you going to pay for that course? For
everybody involved? It sounds I just read the book.
Speaker 1 (20:43):
It's a book. It's nineteen ninety. Yeah, you gotta go.
You don't even have to go to the bookstore anymore.
You get books on tape. The book on tape is
likest like is good? Get back to play basketball, Welcome,
pay to buck back with up and on. That's actually
chapter one.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Didn't we see yesterday Isaac that the FISA collier came out,
she the president of the union or something and said
that talks are going well. I think the FISA collier
needs needs to not say a word. She completely torpedoed
the commissioner and she gave away her cards as there's
They're not going to deal in good faith here. This
(21:20):
is a joke. This is an absolute joke. They're negotiating
for funds that don't exist, for future funds that don't exist.
It's it's gonna be incredible, Ilo.
Speaker 7 (21:33):
I think.
Speaker 9 (21:36):
This is admittedly not objective, it's it's not journalistic. It's
more on the fan side. But I'll get some support
here from Jason.
Speaker 7 (21:47):
I know what's in the box.
Speaker 2 (21:50):
I'm gonna it's a gift.
Speaker 7 (21:53):
Like what's in the box the directions I could go there,
all right, Uh, I am going to get lost.
Speaker 1 (22:00):
Puts in the buck.
Speaker 9 (22:05):
If you get some armpit, make some armpit noises, get
it all out of your system. I'm going to get
Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert the gift of blocking.
Here's a guy who has long since lost his top
two tackles with season ending injuries. Officially, he has had
sixteen different offensive line combinations this year.
Speaker 7 (22:29):
It's actually probably a lot more than that.
Speaker 9 (22:32):
Two games ago against the Eagles, Kat's playing with a
broken left hand and he got sacked a career high
seven times. If he can just consistently be protected consistently.
Speaker 1 (22:46):
By maybe we get him Stefan Digg's prophylagics.
Speaker 2 (22:49):
Boom.
Speaker 9 (22:51):
Well that's one stone now now not to give more
oxygen to Jason.
Speaker 1 (23:01):
He needs isotoners. Right? Remember that Icetona commercial Da Reno?
Speaker 7 (23:05):
Okay, I thought you were going to talk about another endorser.
Speaker 2 (23:09):
Yeah. People don't think about Dann Marino when they think
of is.
Speaker 1 (23:15):
I mean Dan Marino? Also?
Speaker 2 (23:17):
Right?
Speaker 1 (23:17):
Do you guys remember how it ended for him on TV?
Speaker 7 (23:21):
Why did you refresher memories?
Speaker 1 (23:23):
He had a kid with a makeup chick that nobody
knew about.
Speaker 7 (23:26):
Oh oh, I'm all up to speed now. Okay, Well
I'll tell you what.
Speaker 8 (23:33):
Well, if we were too uh, if we were to materialize.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
I was working at CBS at the time. It is
and when you walk when you walked in, and it
wasn't the makeup woman. It was very very nice. Hello Mindy,
Happy hanaka to Ya Mendola. Anyway, it was a previous
makeup woman, but it was you want to talk about
weird like weird?
Speaker 9 (23:58):
Yeah, I I had one occasion to be made up
by a professional makeup artist and they looked at me
and they said, they sighed, and they said, I don't
have the strength.
Speaker 7 (24:09):
It was a real uh confidence booster there.
Speaker 6 (24:11):
I'm retiring today.
Speaker 2 (24:14):
I think what Dan Marino is to Isatner's. I want
to say that any given famous Italian actor is to
Bruno Molly shoes.
Speaker 9 (24:25):
Well, no, that's another one that uh yes, that suffered
from branding, just like I would think hurts rental.
Speaker 1 (24:32):
Cars or when I run through an airport, you remind
me of I can't say.
Speaker 2 (24:37):
That I need I need to give one more gift out.
I want to give Tony Romo for uh for the holidays.
I want to give him a pink slip. He doesn't
deserve to the money he makes.
Speaker 1 (24:55):
I actually thought, kind of, I actually thought he's pretty good.
Last weekend.
Speaker 2 (25:00):
Here's the tricky part about Romo. He has what Brady lacks,
Like he has insight. He does. He'll say some things that.
Speaker 1 (25:08):
You're like, oh, I didn't think it's a personality.
Speaker 2 (25:10):
It's just his voice first of all, like presentation wise,
his voice. He doesn't have a voice, Jim. Secondly, we yeah,
he gets so caught up in all these little childish things.
Speaker 1 (25:23):
Jim, here we go.
Speaker 2 (25:24):
It's been reported, and I know it's because CBS executives
are giving background to these reporters. It's been reported that
he and Nance are like on the outs, they're acting
like it on the air. So yeah, Tony Romo, I
want Charles Davis in there. I love Charles Davis. Hel good,
he's great, gonna happen.
Speaker 1 (25:42):
I mean, I love Charles Davis too.
Speaker 2 (25:44):
What does Tony Romo have that Charles Davis doesn't.
Speaker 1 (25:46):
He was starting quarterback in the Dallas That's it. That's
really there there. It is right, It doesn't help, it's everything.
And and look when he came in, he was a
breath of fresh air. Uh that air is now sort
of like your fourth grade teacher, missus Hemkerk, do you
(26:07):
just live on cigarettes and coffee. Is that it like,
oh God, your breath, I can I can still smell
it now. And this is, you know, thirty eight.
Speaker 6 (26:19):
Years later she needs some Zelman's minty mint bad breath advertisement.
Speaker 1 (26:26):
Miss Hemkerk had terrible breath.
Speaker 6 (26:28):
Could you see?
Speaker 1 (26:30):
I I I need there's there's we gotta figure out
a gift. Can we get together? Okay? I feel like
this is the mound hold On. This is the mound
gathering at bull Durham hold hold On where they're trying
to decide what to get for the wedding and candlesticks, candles, right,
(26:50):
what do we get? Ryan Clark, He's he's the worst
of them. But there's a group of them that are
these race baders who who have decided that two thousand
and twenty and twenty twenty one, where there was all
of these racial issues in America and protests and whatever,
plus we had COVID and all those other things, they've
(27:12):
decided that that is the reason that every decision is
made in sports circles back to race.
Speaker 2 (27:20):
Yes, what do we get it?
Speaker 1 (27:21):
What do we get it?
Speaker 2 (27:21):
Well, I mean, what's the reason anyone does anything? Because
they can't? So I think you just need to get
him a manager producer that tells him that his content
is not good when he does that stuff. I don't
think there's I don't.
Speaker 1 (27:37):
Think what about a what about it? This is this
is an extreme step? What about a shot calling? You
ever had? You know, have a shot collar? You know,
like animal doesn't do it? You know, it's like anytime
you go to race. And again, there are things that
race is part of. I'm not diminishing it that it's
completely eimulated, but it's it's literally the first thing that
(28:00):
he comes to that he falls back on. So is
there a way in which like there's a little buzzer
where it's like he's like, well, maybe it's because it's no,
that's not it right, like where he just gets I
don't know.
Speaker 6 (28:13):
Well, yeah, we used to have these collars for our dogs.
Speaker 8 (28:15):
When they'd bark, it would release like a citronella spray
in their face.
Speaker 1 (28:20):
So peanut butter, you guys ever do the peanut butter
with dogs? Or I've seen Tabasco sauce put Tabasco sauce
on their tongues. It's a good way to teach him that.
Speaker 8 (28:27):
Well, if the if the electrified collar doesn't go over well,
how about just another.
Speaker 6 (28:31):
Brooch pin for him and he'd really appreciate that.
Speaker 1 (28:33):
Yeah, big, what do we get from Cam Newton? Right,
he doesn't want to be viewed as a clown.
Speaker 2 (28:38):
Another hat?
Speaker 1 (28:39):
Another hat? Do we get him a hat for his bat?
Hats for bats. I was just thinking of all the
different things.
Speaker 2 (28:48):
Clown sleep box for his hat, so he could fill
it and we could throw it in the garbage.
Speaker 1 (28:51):
What's in the box, It's just a hat.
Speaker 6 (28:56):
I have one more quick one.
Speaker 8 (28:59):
Uh, this is met Uh, this was this is me
giving my present to someone.
Speaker 1 (29:04):
Marry Christmas, filthy animal and a happy New Year.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
All right.
Speaker 8 (29:09):
I just want to play that real quick. This is
for coach Kirk Farrens of the Iowhawk Gyes. He's he's
going to open up the box, uh, the wrap box,
and it's going to be the really the Reliah Quest
Bowl Championship Trophy, because that will mean that he will
have defeated Vanderbilt Vanderbilt Diego Pavia and he will have
snapped a losing streak to AP ranked teams that goes
(29:31):
back I think to twenty twenty one and it's like
at thirteen games now, So that would be a nice
way to end the year if they could win the Really, I.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Don't think Diego Pavia can win that game because the
winner goes to Disney World in Orlando and gets to
ride all the rides in Diego.
Speaker 4 (29:46):
Oh jeez.
Speaker 6 (29:51):
Dot dot dot old blooded.
Speaker 1 (29:54):
I mean, watch him.
Speaker 6 (29:55):
Run for two hundred and fifty yards on IOWA.
Speaker 1 (29:57):
He's like two and a half INSes smarter than me.
So one of my one am my pause what am
I saying? And that is the Midway?
Speaker 5 (30:03):
The Midway. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk
lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at
foxsports Radio dot com and within the iHeartRadio.
Speaker 1 (30:12):
App Stut gott Leave Show Fox Sports Radio. I'm gonna
prove something to you, improve something to him. I've been
doing this for twenty two years nationally, two thousand and three.
It's actually twenty three if you do the math, twenty
three years nationally. And I believe I'm the only guy
(30:36):
who has ever said that Roger Goodell is not a
good commissioner. He's a great one. And you're like, wait,
what anyway, Yeah, because he has found ways to every
year expand their TV their TV partnerships, which grows the
(31:05):
honeypot for everybody involved, owners and players. Everybody is making
more money. Include the TV partners do quite well. It
takes a lot. It's being a TV partner with the
NFL is a lot. Like living in California. The hardest
(31:25):
part is getting in. Buying in. The buy in is
a lot. But once you get in, we make a
lot of money doing it. But I can prove to
you beyond a reasonable doubt that he's the best commissioner.
Now it doesn't hurt that it's the easiest and most
(31:51):
bet on sport, right, That's really what it's about. Fantasy
football is huge. Betting on football is huge, and with
the proliferation of legal sports, gambling, sports wagering, whatever, it
makes it way easier because Thursday this you know coming up,
you hat Saturdays, but Thursday, Sunday, Monday, that's it gives
(32:11):
you time space, chance to collect your thoughts, all those things.
But I watched the NBA Cup last night. Now keep
in mind, okay, we have a game today. We play
you see Santa Barbara coming up in three and a
half hours. So my day is always jam packed. Coffee
(32:33):
with a donor in the morning, sweet little old lady.
Then practice, film meeting, then prep for this show show,
then meeting with the staff. We have two recruits on
campus watching film. So I walk into a restaurant with
my staff and with two players were recruiting, and I
(32:57):
look up and there's an NBA game on. I didn't
think anything of a set down, and they're like, this
is the Cup Final on a Tuesday, okay, And I
just it was that moment when I started to think,
(33:19):
what are we doing here? It's in Las Vegas in December.
Jason Stewart can attest to this. The only people that
think Las Vegas in December is a great landing spot
for an event are people who are not West Coasters.
There's just no chance. There's no chance. Las Vegas, Nevada
(33:42):
is a great destination city. It is a major league city.
It is it continues to continues to grow, it continues
to expand. It's getting a baseball team, they got a
hockey team, they got a football team. But you know,
it's literally like there's two months out of the year
when you don't go there, and this is one of them.
(34:04):
Nobody goes because it's cold, there's nothing special about it.
It's just smoke filled casinos and sad, sad nightclubs that
high rollers aren't going to. This is the reality to it.
There's a lot of ways in which they can win.
(34:26):
And by the way, the NBA Cup wants to make
it big, they should probably think about having their finals
on New Year's Day, right because right now they just
compete with college football, but be a great TV viewership day.
There's a way in which you could do it. But
it feels like to me, somebody from New York was like, Hey,
what about Vegas. Awesome? Vegas loves basketball. Vegas has got
new arenas, Vegas has got hotel rooms, It's got everything.
(34:48):
When are we doing December? Okay, yeah, it'll be nice there.
It's cold everywhere else. No, it's not on a Tuesday
in December. That's what they came up with. That's what
we're gonna have in Las Vegas. At least the Knicks
get it. They celebrated, they had fun, Josh Hart a
little too much fun. But they're not raising a banner,
(35:12):
they're not doing a ticker tape raid. They're just taking us. Hey,
we want tournament. That's pretty good. Let's welcome in. A
dear friend of mine, a dude who I have on
some former fashion worked in the same company as for Buke,
was there all ten years when I was. We were
at ESPN together, and I think he's been at Fox
(35:34):
most of the time I've been here as well. Rick
Buker he co hosts Finding the Scenes, the podcast of
Brendan Haywood. You can find it wherever you find your
podcast covered the NBA forever, Plus he's our Fox Sports
Radio NBA insider, Buke, how big a marketing debacle is
the Cup when you have it on a Tuesday night
(35:55):
in Vegas in December.
Speaker 10 (35:58):
Well, considering who you had and the fact that you
had the Knicks and you had Victor Wibin Yama and
that was your platform, it's a pretty big debacle. It's
it's certainly a swing in a miss in terms of
what you could have done. But and I do believe
this is why the NBA has already talked about it
(36:18):
won't be in Vegas next year. They they're I think
they're trying to determine exactly where they're going to have it,
but I think they realized going in and this is
always this has been funny for me listening to the
broadcast and listening to the players being asked, Hey, what
do you think about going to Vegas? And it's like,
(36:38):
you know what, for an NBA player going to Vegas,
particularly in the middle of the season, it ain't no
big deal. And going to Vegas is not a big
deal for NBA players in general. They can they can
run a yacht in the south of France. It's not
It's not the same as maybe what we think of,
you know, the average American going to going to Vegas
(37:00):
and having a good time. And as you pointed out,
this really isn't the time of year to be in
in Las Vegas. So uh, the is it is? There?
Is it a market potentially for an NBA team, Absolutely,
But for this event and for if you really want
to make this NBA Cup thing, uh, a real thing
(37:22):
and real valuable, I think you have to add.
Speaker 11 (37:24):
Some some added value to.
Speaker 10 (37:26):
It beyond the money and uh and and you have
to have it in a location that makes sense at
this time of year.
Speaker 1 (37:35):
Wemby unbelievable in the first half, yep, just an unbelievable talent,
but a complete no show in the fourth quarter. How
much how much is that a warning sign of maybe
who he is or where he is right now in
his development.
Speaker 10 (37:55):
Uh, well, it's certainly where he is in his development.
I don't think it's a reflection of who he is.
I do think he has to figure out when the
game gets tough and the pace slows down, where is
he going to operate from? And Kenny gets strong enough
in his base and in his positioning to be able
(38:18):
to operate from a certain place on the floor. And
some of this is just a byproduct of the fact
that you know he's missed a stretch and so you
saw the difference. I think to me, the big difference
was one Jordan Clarkson and Mitchell Robinson came in off
the bench and just gave the Knicks an energy boost
at the beginning of the fourth quarter that flipped the game.
(38:40):
And then you have a team that knows who their
go to guy is and how to operate off of that,
the go to guy being Jalen Brunson, and so there
was just a familiarity and an understanding of how we're
going to play and what we need to do in
the fourth quarter for the Knicks that the Spurs don't
have right now. With Victor Wembanyama. I would assume you know,
(39:02):
at some point that's the guy that they are going
to play through in crunch time. But the fact that
they haven't had the ability to develop that synchronicity and
understanding at this point is not a surprise to me.
There is a question, like, I don't I don't think
it's a foregone conclusion. I do believe that with his
(39:23):
work ethic and his intelligence that he will find a
way to.
Speaker 11 (39:27):
Be that go to guy, and I have no question that.
Speaker 10 (39:30):
He has the temperament for it. But he still needs
to figure out how do I utilize what my strengths
are when the game is on the line and not
allow people to get into my legs and knock me
off balance and make me feel so uncomfortable that that
I that I can't get a shot or make a
(39:51):
play when the game is on the line. That's That's
what I'm seeing right now is a guy who's still
trying to figure that out.
Speaker 1 (39:58):
As a basketball coach and a former basketball analyst, nailed it.
He just he ain't strong enough. He just he's so
so long pause that he just the Hey low Man wins.
You know, it's ill wrestling and life analogy. Low Man
wins and and he's struggling when it becomes a man's game,
which is what happens in the playoffs as well. Rick
(40:20):
Buker joining US Fox Sports Radio NBA Insider, I'm watching
I've watched the Lakers a bunch, and Lebron does look older.
I mean, it's it's hit him this year. He has moments,
but then I see, uh it was the national anthem
or or introductions, and he's he's doing the golf club
grip and he's like clearly thinking about golf. Then he's
(40:42):
got a day off and he's posting it looks like
he was at riv playing golf, Like is he actively retired.
Speaker 10 (40:52):
Well, I gotta tell you, from the beginning of the year,
just watching him as stoic as he was at the
end of the bench when he wasn't playing, and how
disengaged he was, it it has felt like a he's
either disengaged or it's a silent protest that this is
not me any you know, this this team isn't about
(41:16):
me anymore.
Speaker 11 (41:17):
And you know, if you're a Lebron fan, you're.
Speaker 10 (41:20):
Saying, hey, he's just he's trying not to steal the
spotlight or he's he's acknowledging that he's moved over. I
think there are ways to do that if you're still
committed to trying to win as much as possible and
support the new sheriff in town. Sure there's ways to
do that. And I don't I don't see that. What
I'm really curious about is and it was just we
(41:43):
saw that that Luca bought all everybody on the team,
that he bought him electric bikes, and I don't know
if he saw the clip online, and I was like, okay,
I'm going to see, like, wait a minute, there's nothing
of Lebron. There's no Lebron in the picture. When whenever
you're advertising any thing involving the Lakers, you always try
to put Lebron in there somewhere for visibility. And I
(42:08):
don't know what, you know, I wasn't there. But I'm
just curious how far the disengagement goes. And I think
it's problematic. And I think we saw a little bit
of that conflict or that wrestling that Lebron has with
the fact and the Lakers, with the fact that he's
(42:29):
no longer the guy there, and it came down with
the technical free throw like he's not supposed to take that.
And what was most interesting was his response afterwards, why
wouldn't I take it? Well, because you're not the guy anymore?
And they thros all.
Speaker 1 (42:44):
That particularly well outside of the fact you're not a
great free throw shooter Lucas and he shot like fifteen
and he's the better player now outside of that, like honestly,
probably be the third guy to take it. Probably the
third guy, like he's taken it before him.
Speaker 10 (43:01):
And you know, the other the other part was like,
I think it was a game. Maybe it was Phoenix.
I think it was I think it was Phoenix, But
there was a game recently where he was energized and
defensively he was getting after it. And it wasn't the
whole game it was. It was the second half. But
I was really impressed. And this is what I don't
think we're gonna see, but what I would I would
(43:24):
love to see from Lebron, which is recognizing we got
all the offense we need. Luka, Doncic and Austin Reeves
proved that coming out of the gate. Uh and DeAndre
Ayton is playing much better than I think anybody expected
him to, certainly me you know where I can. I can.
I can bring defensive energy because that's just what we need.
(43:47):
And I can still be a factor there. And it
might be shorter minutes and it might not be the
same box score, but that's how I can positively affect
this game, affect this team. If he were, if he
were approaching this this that way, I would be the
first to stand up and giving him give him a
standing ovation for having the humility to accept that role
(44:11):
and understand, you know what, I'm just here to win,
and I'm here to do whatever is necessary to support
us winning. And I unfortunately I don't. I have not
seen that for the for the most part, and I'm
not counting on seeing it. And and that's where it
feels like he's just he's having somewhat of a tantrum
or you know, a silent protest that he's not the
(44:34):
guy anymore. So Okay, guys, go ahead, flukashow. Let's let's
see what you got. I'm gonna work on my golf swing.
Speaker 1 (44:41):
That is only topped by the ouster of Chris Paul
winning Clippers. I mean, we're talking about a first ballot
Hall of Fame point guard who comes back to the
Clippers where he was mister lob City, and not only
does he not make it to Christmas, they cut him
(45:07):
in the middle of the night on the road. And
now more and more details are coming out. All right,
so what happened? What really happened?
Speaker 10 (45:16):
Well, I don't know that we've got all of the
details quite yet, because clearly Lawrence Frank got to a
point where it was like, Okay, that's enough, We're done.
And I don't know what that last straw was. I
haven't I haven't found that out yet, But there was
the last straw, and it was, you know, while while
(45:40):
no one was paying attention to it, it was building
for a while.
Speaker 11 (45:45):
And I know from Chris Paul's history.
Speaker 10 (45:48):
I mean, if you just look at all the teams
he's been with over the last couple of years. Once
you're not the same player, then how you treat people,
how you carry yourself, how you think of yourself within
the organization, you gotta be careful because if you're rubbing
(46:09):
people the wrong way, and your contract ain't that big,
the financial commitment.
Speaker 11 (46:14):
Ain't that big, and your.
Speaker 10 (46:16):
Role or your contribution to the team is not that big,
at some point it becomes you know, what we would
love for this to be a fairy tale ending, but
we're just sick of you, so we're gonna make a move.
And so the biggest, the only the question for me
is not that they made this move, or even that
they made this move when they did. It's that it
(46:38):
feels like it was an emotional decision in the moment
and I don't know what inspired that emotional moment yet,
but I will continue to work at it and see
if I can find out.
Speaker 1 (46:52):
Buke, thanks for joining us. We gotta keep this thing going.
This is awesome finding the seams, by the way, just
you know, I love talk of the seams. People understand
that that's the rubber part of leather basketball is the seams,
all right. Brendan Haywood obviously can tell you that, just
so you know, I was like one of I feel
like five view on Earth that could make any pass
(47:13):
and deliver it on the seams. So I have all ball,
but I wanted to call it on the seams. That's
what I wanted to call it.
Speaker 10 (47:20):
So that is quietly one of the gifts or the
skills that goes completely unappreciated except for shooters.
Speaker 11 (47:29):
To know that they're going to get that ball.
Speaker 10 (47:31):
In the pocket and it's going to be lined up,
and it gives them that extra point whatever seconds to
knock down a shot and has great effect on the percentage.
So I'm with you.
Speaker 1 (47:44):
Tell Brandon I said, Hi, thanks for joining us. You
got it.
