hope you had a great holiday. You were not in
a very much deserved day off, and I hope you
had a great Christmas.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
Great Christmas. It was watching some football, watching some basketball,
and now the drama sets in in the world of
college football. Jason Stewart is here IOWA was Sam taking

It seems that Kyle Whittingham is to be named as
the new head football coach at the University of Michigan,
sides coming closer to an agreement to make Whittingham the

(01:09):
successor for Sharon Moore in Ann Arbor. Interesting news, an
interesting name, and a very very very very interesting situation
with the Wolverines.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
So I'll be honest in a couple things. One putting
aside the Michigan part for half a second. You know,
it was I think exactly two weeks ago. I seem
to remember it being a Friday that we find out
that Kyle Whittingham will no longer be the head coach
at Utah. And I mean, in my head, I know
that a coach in waiting had been named previously, but

(01:43):
I just said, you know, this guy's in his mid sixties.
The world of college football is changing, all those cliches,
and I said, man, you know, it's a bummer to
see him go. This guy has I think he's been
in the face of the When you think the University
of Utah, you think of Kyle Whittingham. And I think
if you started to listen to the press conference and
the statements. You realize pretty quickly that he didn't necessarily

(02:07):
want to leave Utah, certainly under the circumstances that he did.

Speaker 4 (02:11):
So.

Speaker 3 (02:11):
I got a lot of takes on how it fits
in at Michigan, but I don't think it's often that
the greatest coach in the history of your school pretty
much at the peak, they won ten games this year
day they went ten and two. Their only losses were
to Texas Tech at a BYU. They were clearly still
operating at a high level. They kind of tried to
force him into retirement. He's like, no, I'm not really sure,

(02:32):
I'm ready to retire. And now he certainly upgraded his job,
and I know we're gonna discuss this over the next
few minutes. Michigan I think upgraded at the head coach.

Speaker 2 (02:41):
I think it's the best case scenario for Michigan because
there were dream scenarios that just never were going to happen.

Speaker 3 (02:50):
Kaylenk, you can go.

Speaker 2 (02:52):
Down the list. Let let's let's go down the list.
Like Kaylin de Boorr was not going to take that job.
It was just not going to happen. Once Alabama made
the bracket, I think that that was locked in still
even if they didn't, I don't know if you would
go to Michigan. Kenny Dillingham was another name at Arizona State,
and Dillingham always pointed to being close to his family

(03:13):
and being next door to his sister and that would
be the reason why he would stay. Well, he got
a new contract from Arizona State. But honestly, really, if
you're Kenny Dillingham and you're probably going to be a
top tier head coach in college football and be a
candidate for some of the best jobs out there, is
Michigan at this moment, not overall, but at this moment

(03:35):
one of the top five or ten jobs in college football.
The reason is no. The answer is no. And people
will say it's a top three or top five job
when you're not investigating the entire athletic department it is.
That is the reason why. So, if you're Kenny Dillingham
or any other young and up and coming head coach
that is looking for your big break, why would you

(03:55):
go to a place sign on the dotted line and
have no guarantee that the people that brought you in
are still going to be at the with the athletic department,
right that.

Speaker 3 (04:05):
Was one of the biggest low key things. So the
cherrollmore firing happens, Okay, we all everybody starts talking about
who's going to be next. As soon as I heard
that an outside law firm was coming in to investigate
the athletic department, my head immediately switched to if you
are a big time candidate that has a good job,

(04:25):
why are you going to leave a job where First
of all, I didn't even know if ward Manual is
the name of the AD. I didn't even know if
he's going to be allowed to make this higher. I
don't even know if he did make this higher. But
I said, that guy, considering everything that has happened in
the athletic department, it wouldn't stun me if he is
not there in six weeks, in six months and whatever.

(04:46):
And so that is such an important point. And also
it is an important point out too, how lucky they
got that Kyle Whitningcamp got forced out at a place
that he's the greatest coach ever and still clearly wanted
to coach. But I think that's an important one, is
that the athletic department is being investigated, and I think
it's fair to say there's a reasonable chance that the
ad will not be there in six months, and so

(05:07):
it all worked out very well.

Speaker 2 (05:08):
There's also another trap door where if something scandalous or
something else was going on within the athletic department after
their recent discretions and penalties that were handed down, this
would go along with that. And considering the penalties that
they were already given, if even more was found, there
could have been even more. But that's just going down

(05:29):
the road. It's telling you why no young coach would
take that opportunity to grab the job. So a name
like Jed Fish at Washington, I thought was legit for
a couple of reasons, didn't get the floor Ada job.
I thought that he had spent time at Michigan. He's
around the He's not Kenny Dillingham young, right, he's around

(05:51):
my age, I think late forties, around fifty at that time.
This would be a spot where you're like, okay, maybe
I can maybe I could flatten this this road. I
thought that he was a possibility. He was actually the
person that I thought would ultimately get the job. But
now you bring in Whittingham, maybe willingly to your point
of how the departure from Utah came about. And the

(06:14):
funny thing about that situation is what did we hear
was the alleged reasons or the reasons that we were
guessing why Kyle Whittingham didn't want to be a part
of Utah anymore. Was stepping aside because of the new
private equity, because of the new money, and that that Aaron,
that's the world Kyle Whittingham doesn't want to deal with. Yep,

(06:35):
just doesn't want to deal with at all. So that's
got to be the reason why he's stepping away. And
now a couple of weeks later he's at the Michigan
job with probably access to a lot maybe not money
like coming in that form, but a lot more resources.
It makes a lot of sense for a lot of
different reasons. But that wasn't the reason why he left Utah. No,

(06:57):
I don't think it was.

Speaker 3 (06:58):
I think it was from my understanding is that basically,
you know, listen when you name a coach in waiting
and I you know, we've seen this happen twenty thousand
times in college sports in the last decade, from John
Shyern coach K to Hubert Davis. I guess Hubert Davis
was never technically coach in waiting, but it's happened a lot.

(07:18):
But then the issue does become like at some point
guys got to step away, and sometimes they don't want to.
So my understanding was that he kind of put this succession,
you know what. It almost reminds me of Jim Beheim,
if you remember, put a coach in waiting in place
and just refuse to leave. Yes, Mike Hopkins was the
guy's name. He went to wash it. He wasn't any good.
But my understanding is that's what happened here, was that

(07:40):
it was more of they named the successor. The successor
is a younger dude. He's the defensive coordinator. He's really good.
He's had other opportunities, and basically it just got to
a point where Kyle whitting him for however many years, two, three, four,
whatever it is, has just kind of kept kicking the
can down the road. And I think the school was
one worried about losing the young guy, but to you know,

(08:01):
kind of about a year to year basis. So I
think that's why he left. Now I'll say this, Dan,
as far as the hire is concerned, I was thinking
about this, you know, the higher works out well. Besides,
given all of the things that you said about the
scandal and multiple scandals and the circumstances under which he's hired,
I think about this, Is there an argument against Kyle

(08:25):
Whittingham other than his age? And I'm just asking you
maybe there is one that I'm not aware of.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
God, God, I think that. I think the one thing
that stands out to me. And I don't know the
breakdown of how it goes with Utah, but staff wise,
how many are going to stay in Salt Lake? How
many would leave for ann Arbor, how many would stay
with Morgan Scalley if that's what's his staff going to be,
because everybody's not leaving Utah now to go to Michigan.

Speaker 3 (08:51):
Well, one quick note on that, Jason Beck did if
the offensive coordinator. There were reports right before we got
on air that he could follow he could follow Kyle Witningham,
which is very interesting because they went to a system
with a very run heavy, run based quarterback this year,
and we know who Michigan's quarterback we assume is gonna
be Bryce. Bryce underwould excuse me really quickly. So the

(09:12):
point I was gonna make, so the staff thing totally fair.
But let's assume the staff isn't totally gutted, and he's
got a higher a staff from new and I'm sure
there's gonna be guys at Michigan that he wants to keep.
If the only argument is he's sort of old and
he's a guy that I wish we could have for
twenty years instead of like five to seven, that's how

(09:35):
you know the higher is good. Like the if the
arguments against the hire were like, well, he's only had
one good year, or he's never been a head coach,
or he was successful at the first job but not
the second one. Those are legitimate things, like Kenny Dilling.
We don't have to go candidate by candidate, right, the

(09:55):
only real argument against Kyle Whittingham is he's sixty six
years old, and like, oh, we might only have them
for four years.

Speaker 2 (10:02):
And it's like if.

Speaker 3 (10:03):
That's the only argument, that means you made a pretty
darn good high.

Speaker 2 (10:06):
In my opinion, you needed somebody to navigate this and
navigate it and maybe also win football games. And I
don't think any coach was willing to put their neck
out on the line again of this younger generation to
do so. So you got the best of the best
of the older one and someone that I don't think,
to your point, is gonna want to sit there and
be there for fifteen years. I think they still wanted

(10:27):
to coach. They feel that they've got left a lot
left in the tank. And I'm sure Kyle Whittingham is
now motivated considering what happened at Utah. But if you're
Michigan and you're just trying to hold down the fort
and make sure that the thing doesn't doesn't crumble, which
I don't think is on the horizon, but you just
never know. You have no idea, You have no idea

(10:49):
what could possibly be coming, just like we had no
idea that this situation could happen with Sharon Moore. Maybe
some did it ann Arbor for a while, but we
didn't think it would end up getting to this point.
You've got somebody to at least keep it steady, and
if you can keep it steady in the rough waters,
if that's the analogy here to get you through to
the other end, there's probably no better person to do

(11:11):
it than Kyle Whittingham. In the bonus is winning football
games and having chances to beat Ohio State and getting
into the college football playoffs.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
Well, and here's a counterpoint to that is that Michigan,
well it wasn't pretty. They did go nine and three
this year with a coach that was very clearly distracted
on things other than football. Okay, so if you can
go go ahead, right, No, I think you're right. That's
what I'm saying is like he clearly had very he

(11:40):
had very clear interests, and I'm not sure the Michigan
football program was one of them. And they still went
nine and three. So it's like, now you have an
adult in the room that has won. Now I will
say I you know, this was a credit to our
buddy Bernie Fratto. He's pointed this out. The schedule does
get much tougher next year. I think it's Penn State obviously,
Ohio State, UH, Indiana is kind of on. So like,

(12:03):
the schedule does get tougher. But I'm just saying, if
you won nine games this year with a by the
way freshman quarterback but a coach that very clearly was
not fully committed to the job, imagine the possibilities. Even
if it's an older guy with somebody who is very
much committed to me.

Speaker 2 (12:20):
I think you need We do this a lot in
the NFL when we're talking about fourth down plays. What
would the other team want you to do? Sure, and
you do the opposite of that. I think if you
were today to ask any reasonable Ohio State fan how
they feel about the higher A reasonable one, not the
delusional one who thinks that they're gonna win every game
or thinks that that that everybody in ann Arbor should

(12:44):
be put in jail. That those that's the delusional fan.

Speaker 3 (12:47):
Although in some cases they probably should be.

Speaker 5 (12:48):
As in the last couple of.

Speaker 2 (12:49):
Weeks, maybe as someone who kind of fits that category,
I think, yeah, I don't like it, sure from that
that point of view, because it brings stability, and it
brings it a culture of good football. And I've always
liked Kyle Whittingham, and it's gonna stink to see him
in the amazing Blue.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
No, it's it's surreal. But yeah, I think again, And
I know this is the theme. We don't have to
keep beating up on it. But given the circumstances, we
understand the block m the history that this, even the
recent history, the three straight Big Ten championships, it was
at a disadvantageous time to hire a head coach under

(13:29):
disadvantageous circumstances. And I think also there was clearly increasing
pressure to get it done soon because we saw I
think Biff Pogey said it in a press conference, is
like we got guys that are gonna be ready to
opt out, Like like there's a lot of dudes that
are going to be ready to enter the portal or
are just gonna opt out of the bowl game if
they don't get answers because they're not whatever. So all

(13:51):
things considered, it worked out about as well as it could.

Speaker 2 (13:53):
So Jeff Brohm's name was thrown about, sure right, like
that's and and no disrespect to him, But now you're
going down the line of all these coaches and to
come out the end and have Kyle Whittingham.

Speaker 3 (14:09):
So what I mean, Yeah, Like I was somebody that
from the beginning I did feel like Jeff brom would
take the job. Just some stuff that I think I know,
but like he's more in that Jedfish. He's in his fifties,
like it's kind of go time on his career, and
it's like if I'm gonna leave my alma mater, I'm
gonna do it soon. But I think if you had
asked me the day, you know, I don't. I don't

(14:30):
remember if Charol Moore was fired before Kyle Whittingham left
or vice versa. But like if you had basically asked
me to day Sharil Moore, hey you can get Kyle
Whittingham or Jeff Brom, I would take Kyle Whittingham.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
So don't There were comments, and I mentioned this on
the show a couple of weeks ago, but when they
played their last game at rice Ecles, it sounded like
Whittingham knew that that was his last game at rice Ecles.
So people were starting to connect some of the dots.
It's just not gonna be his Uh, who knows. Maybe
maybe they'll have a non conference game with Utah some
other point. But Kyle Whittingham now finding a new place.

(15:01):
But it was at that point that I think a
lot of people started to realize, oh, maybe Winningham is
done here and he was done in Salt Lake, but
just not done with just getting started baby.

Sesame Street helped raise all of us now it's our
turn donate this holiday season at sesame dot org because
the world needs sesame and Sesame needs you. He's inventorre as.
I'm Dan Beyer in for Doug Gottlieb. Today the Lions
eliminated from the NFC playoff picture with that loss to
the Minnesota Vikings. It's it's always tough to lose, it's

(15:42):
even tougher to lose. To Max Brozmer like that was.
That was tough one for the Lions yesterday in the
Sandwich game of the tripleheader. And then at night you
the Chiefs giving all that they could against the Denver Broncos.
But the Broncos continue their winning ways despite having their
losing streak snapped last week. That bounced back in a

(16:03):
short week and beat the these shorthanded Kansas City Chiefs,
which sure seemed like the farewell to Travis Kelcey. So
a lot happening on the Christmas Day in the National
Football League?

Speaker 3 (16:14):
Can I say something really quick on I know we
have a bigger Lions conversation to do, as I think
we're waiting for Mark or he's coming up, okay, So
as we get Mark Dominic ready, the Lions topic is
both fascinating, but it's also sort of not fascinating to
me because everyone's like the Lions, what happened? It's like

(16:35):
they whifted on their OC, Like is it? It's not like,
you know, like the Chiefs, right, I think there's like
seven holes to plug on that roster before you're back
to where you were the Lions.

Speaker 2 (16:49):
It's like, I don't know.

Speaker 3 (16:50):
I mean, you may have had a genius savant calling plays.
You may not get a Ben Johnson again, but like
you know, with due respect to everybody who does, I
saw so many like how do the Lions fix it?
I don't know, nail the OC and you'll probably be
really good again next year.

Speaker 2 (17:06):
We'll have to get some insights, maybe from a former
NFL GM who joins US now. Mark Dominic is on
the line, as he always does here on Fox Sports Radio,
Mary Christmas, Mark, how.

Speaker 6 (17:17):
Are you merry Christmas? Fellas? I'm good. It's a fun
week of football for sure. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (17:21):
Absolutely, we were just talking about the Lions. Aaron says.
You know, step one is to figure out your offense
and offensive coordinator and find your eventual real replacement to
Ben Johnson. Are there further issues with Detroit outside of
what happened at the OC position this year.

Speaker 6 (17:39):
Yeah, I mean, you know, we can be hard. This
is also a Detroit team to put fifty points up
on the board. I think during the season they've dropped
thirty to forty points almost half the year. So this
team has scored points. It's just been frustrated the last
couple of weeks when you put twenty four and then
ten on the board of the last two weeks and
you're just not quite scoring enough. I think it's more
as much as it is on offensive. I think it's

(18:00):
also on defense. I think it's a little bit of
a combination because if you're scoring on average, if you're
scoring about twenty eight points to thirty points a game,
you'd think you'd have a lot more victories than eight.
At this point we did the Detroit Lions, and I think,
you know, some things are just falling apart from them.
I look at it as a complete like hold tight,
let's not panic here. It's not the season that anybody

(18:21):
expected to Detroit, and that's frustrated across the board. But
it doesn't mean you just need to go throw everything
in the boat and off the boat and say Hey,
how are we going to do everything again next year?
Continuity is something that's nice and I think for the
Detroit Lions, in my personal opinion, I don't think you
quickly go out and do anything else. You know, obviously,
with John Morton and what they're going to do, we'll
see who they choose or what they're going to have.

(18:43):
They're going to play that out. But Kelvin Sheppard, like
I said, on the defensive side, I want as much
continuity as I can, so even if it comes from internal,
I think that's important because I think in a year
from now, we can look at the Detroit team and
go but they didn't do a lot yet, They've gotten
so much better and I think that's what we can see.
The offensive line, to me is still a spot special interior.
The offensive line that's to me where they really kind
of struggled this year, and I think that's gonna be

(19:04):
something they have to address.

Speaker 3 (19:05):
Let's stay in that same game. I know JJ McCarthy
did not play in this game, and I know he
got hurt in the Giants game, but previous two games
before that, five touchdowns, one interception. You have the big
Sunday Night win against Dallas. I under with JJ McCarthy.
I understood both sides. Have you won a million games
last year with Sam Donald? Do you let him walk?
Sam Donald's having success? I also felt like everybody skewed

(19:28):
too far the other way because, in my opinion, he
was essentially a rookie quarterback after essentially taking no snaps
last year. Just again, I know it's hard because he
didn't play last night to evaluate him, the vikings, whatever.
I just feel like I still feel like there's a
lot of chapters to be written in the JJ McCarthy,

(19:48):
you know story before we just write him off as
this total bus Do you agree?

Speaker 2 (19:51):
Disagree?

Speaker 6 (19:53):
I do agree, And you know I want to give
him another full season, just like you know, I'd like
to see, you know, a couple more seasons out of
Caleb Waves before I just write the check book, right.
And it's with JJ, certainly not the season that I
thought he'd have. I thought he'd have a little bit
better season. But his big thing is, you know, availability
is a big part of this game, is we all know.
And I think one of the things that's really frustrated
from Minnesota and their fans is to watch how many

(20:14):
times their quarterbacks got hit this year. I mean, I
think they gave up over almost sixty sacks on the season,
So I don't know who you're going to put back there.
That's a big problem they have to address in this
offseason as well. And I know it's never exciting or
sexy to draft an offensive line in the first or
second round. You never get the good you know, post
draft grades. You didn't draft the receiver that every likes,
or the tight end or the you know, big pass rusher.

(20:36):
But you know, the offensive line is so critical. And
if you take a step back and look at Caleb
Williams and what he's done in the Bears, a lot
of it has to do with what the Bears did
this offseason on that offensive line. This has really been
a catalyst for that team.

Speaker 2 (20:49):
Mark Dominic joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's here,
and Torres, I'm Dan Byer, Mark, former GM of the
Tampa Bay Buccaneers. I'm curious with your twenty plus years
experience in front office. Is it's not a chicken in
the egg sort of deal. But we had Chris Ola
Dokin starting last night for the Chiefs. We had Max
Brosmore starting for the Minnesota Vikings. We got Brady Cook

(21:10):
starting for the New York Jets. Dolphins have turned to
Quinn Yours. I understand why the Dolphins made the decision
that they made, but there seems to be a real
question on the quality of quarterback play when we're getting
down to second and third string quarterbacks. Has this always
been an issue? Does the NFL have to figure out
a way to develop these quarterbacks so we're not watching

(21:31):
guys who really can't throw the football. What has been
your experience with the I guess limitations in trying to
develop guys to play that important position.

Speaker 6 (21:43):
Yeah, I look at this. That's tougher, Dan, because I
look at it and see, since you know, the the
pricice squads have been expanded in the amount you're easily
able to keep one or two extra quarterbacks maybe on
your private squad as you work with them and develop them.
But there's such a difference, as you guys know, between hey,
great rep and practice where you can't lose the game,
and there's a rep in the regular season where you can.

(22:05):
And it's just you know, the processing and the development.
I think we're going to be okay. I think the
more important part of this league is yes, you have
your quarterback. But I think clubs have kind of taken
it for granted, like, Okay, you know we're going to
spend fifty five million dollars in our quarterback. Then we're
going to go buy the left end and the wide
receiver and instead not thinking maybe you should have another
twelve million to fifteen million dollars back based on that

(22:28):
second string quarterback, because in case of I don't want
to look to my owner and say the season's over.
I want to be able to say, hey, look we
can battle through this and maybe could the other side,
maybe an injury for our quarterback isn't that bad, Or
we can still win with this guy and we're gonna
have to have everybody else step up. And he might
not be the quarterback, might not be the reason we're winning,
but we win with him. And so that's what I
think clubs have to look at, is what do I

(22:49):
want to invest in the number two? And it's not
Maybe it's not a young guy. It depending on who
your starter is, but maybe it's that veteran, it's that
guy that's played around a little bit that you said, hey,
look a Davis Mills, right, something like that. Even a
guy that's battled injuries in is young still Aidan O'Connell,
who's like, I'm not sure what he is or who
he is, but boy when he plays, he's still got
a better touchdown to the interception ratio, and Davis Mills

(23:11):
the same way. So I think you got a look
at those type of players and say maybe the investments
should be a little bit stronger. They're based off where
the CAP's going to make sure that if my star
quarterback isn't able to be there for four weeks or
eight weeks, I still can take this team and get
to the postseason and show something. So I think investing
in trying to allocate those funds towards that number two
quarterbacks still is really critical, and I think clubs are

(23:32):
starting to see that again.

Speaker 2 (23:33):
So then basically we're just kind of we're kind of
at the mercy of what a third string quarterback is
because that's kind of how it looks like there's nothing
that the Vikings could do. Really, I just don't want
to watch Max Brosmer run for his life every time,
but it kind of seems like that's kind of what
we have to deal with in the NFL.

Speaker 6 (23:51):
Dan, I think you're right, you know, and I think
part of that is, you know, one less preseason game,
and one day we're gonna have one less preseason game,
will have the two preseasons at some point, and part
of that's going to be that you can't beat experienced
and for these young quarterbacks in the league that are
like I probably won't play, he's taking the third step
the reps. You know, he's just doing scout team. You know,

(24:12):
he's pretending to be the starter for the other club.
So he's not even really working in his own offense.
He's working with the other offense does and so they're
not getting the reps to be able to say, hey, look,
if it's my turner, I get my number called and
I'll be ready to go. And so for like Max
and things like that, he's been running the scout team
all year. He's pretending to be the Bears and the
Lions and the Packers and instead now he's got to
be the Vikings and that's hard. And we saw that

(24:35):
last night with you know, like you said, you're running
around and hopefully to make enough plays that they can
stay in it. And defensively they did.

Speaker 3 (24:42):
Mark let me ask you this, there's a excuse me,
a little bit of a hot internet rumor right now,
or an Internet conversation happening. Obviously, the Giants right now
are trending to potentially get the number one overall pick.
Jackson Dart a little bit of a concussion issue or
at least, you know whatever, he's susceptible, whatever, And it
feels like there is this conversation of one year in

(25:05):
do you trade Jackson Dart and use that number one
pick hypothetically on Fernando Mendoza. Now I understand probably to
this point you haven't done a ton of homework on
Fernando Mendoza. You're focused on the season going on. But
as a former GM, it feels, let me put it
this way, it feels like this is one of those
great Internet conversations that outside of Kyler Murray and Josh Rosen,
I don't really ever remember happening when you draft a

(25:27):
guy you don't really know much about him and you
immediately draft over him. I don't even know really what
the question is, but I just think it's one of
those that sounds like a fun topic and a fun
discussion in December that doesn't really come to Fruition in April.
Do you have any thoughts on what the Giants code
or should potentially do with that first.

Speaker 6 (25:44):
Pick if they can get Yeah, and I appreciate it.
I do think there's some fun there. But I also
look at Jackson Dart and and you know, when we
talked about you know, the you know, uh, you know
JJ McCarthy and his touchdown intercepts you right, show And
I know that's an easy number to look at for
any fan, but at least Jackson's was thirteen to five, right,

(26:04):
And so you're you're sitting there going, well, you know, yes,
he's got to find a way to learn how to slide,
like we've heard that before as well, and I think
Jackson can be taught that to make sure that he
stayed in the game. I would have a hard time
walking away from Jackson Dark right now and taking Mendoza.
I have not done enough work on Mendoza as a person.
You know, there's still questions on you know, what's he

(26:26):
like as a leader, what's he like as a guy
in the locker room. I think those are really big
questions that as fans we haven't dug into that. And
I'm not saying there's something bad there. I'm just saying
the capability of the leadership of a player and how
he leads the team and what the team around him
thinks of him is critical. I fell into that trap
a little bit. I had a young quarterback who was
outstanding in terms of athletic gifts and arm talent and

(26:48):
quarterback skills in Josh Freeman, but he wasn't a great leader.
And you know that costs over time. That cost me,
and so I'm very sensitive to that, and I would
like to know that about Mendoza. I just don't know
what that is yet. And I've got a little caution
there just because and so I think jack Jackson dark.
The bigger thing is like, can you get him some
more another weapon? You know? Is it the wide receiver?

(27:11):
Because it's a really good receiver class, is it?

Speaker 2 (27:13):
You know?

Speaker 6 (27:13):
I don't know if there's no offen to line, but
I think it's better for the Giants to have. The
chatter is how far can they trade back in the
first and hopefully find a taker for the number one
pick and still get the player they want, Because that's
where you've got to really balance it, right. You can't
just I'm going to trade back to thirteen because that's
the best offer. It's like, you still want to walk
out with a guy that's going to make a huge
impact because you're going to have to win in two
thousand and twenty six, especially for the GM. So I

(27:37):
think that you've got to find out where your line
of you know, demarcation is in terms of where the
skill set's still elite. And I still feel like I'm
getting a top player versus, you know, just trade to trade,
and I think that's what the Giants, that's what we'll
be talking about if the Giants hold on to this pick.

Speaker 2 (27:52):
I got one last one for you, Mark Dominic joining
us here on Fox Sports Radio. There are some rumblings
in Baltimore this week. There have been rumblings over the
last couple of weeks. Has a player ever set a
practice schedule for a team in your history in the
National Football League? Because I was alleged in a column
in the Baltimore Sun that the Ravens practice in the
afternoon because that's when Lamar Jackson wants to practice. There

(28:13):
were other claims made about Jackson's preparation and maybe falling
asleep in movies, but the practice time was something that
alerted me. Has that ever happened in your experience in
the NFL?

Speaker 6 (28:24):
No, nothing like that. The coach coach handles that and
make sure that's happening. And I know there's a rumors
and stuff about Harbaugh. Possibly if he got let go,
he'd be picked up in two seconds as a head
coach somewhere else. I don't worry about that. That is
surprising to me. I don't know if I completely agree
with that. I'm sure you're trying to find the right

(28:45):
balance of right rhythm, but I've never ever heard of
a story like that before. And I will say, you know, obviously,
the Giants play the Raiders, and I just feel like
in the end it's not gonna be a just sexy,
but I think the Raiders end up with the number
picking the draft.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Interesting. All right. He's Mark Dominic, our NFL Insider. We
appreciate the time. Happy New Year, Mark. We'll talk to
again in twenty twenty six.

Speaker 6 (29:08):
Thanks for having me on, guys. Happy to your fellows.

Speaker 7 (29:11):
Ryan Kennedy. He is the Detroit Lions fan who was
involved in that physical confrontation with Steelers receiver DK Metcalf,
leading to Metcalf being suspended for two games, held a
news conference where he denied Metcalf's accusation that he used
a racial slur during the confrontation.

Speaker 8 (29:29):
Listen, it is really hard to get me upset.

Speaker 6 (29:33):
But there's two things.

Speaker 8 (29:35):
Animal abuse racism. Like I get hot right away, Like
I could feel it my face, it gets all warm.
I didn't use any racial slurs, no hate speech. I mean,
none of that stopped at the game. To Kaitlin, if
you're watching this, man, if you could just say that, please, Like,
my family's getting threats and stuff and it's not cool.

(29:57):
So I'm sure you didn't want that to happen to
the family. That's all I got.

Speaker 7 (30:02):
Oh final footnote on that mister Kennedy conducted the news
conference while wearing a Lions cap backwards back to you guys.

Speaker 3 (30:12):
I actually saw that clip. I was like, I am
sure the Lions are over the moon that he is
wearing team paraphernalia while he is press conference.

Speaker 2 (30:19):
Sticking to the sticking to the bit. Do we want
to dive into this? You guys have thoughts on that
at all?

Speaker 9 (30:25):
I had a lot of thoughts. We should get to
it in the next three hours. But I just like
the fact that he's somebody is demanding that at the
very least DK say he never said.

Speaker 2 (30:36):
That, Yes, but but saying it in the reason and
calling him to Kaalin, which is the reason why DK
was mad in the first place, is him also sticking
to his guns in saying that what he said was
not wrong. I think that there's that way of weaving
in and out.

Speaker 5 (30:55):
Iowa, Sam, you mean his gun that's made out made
into like a balloon animal because this guy's a oh wow,
Like I'm sorry. What happened with DK did was clownish,
But this guy is a clown. Okay, because he may
be innocent of this, but this guy is still going
around and antagonizing players. If you are that kind of person,
that's clownish behavior.

Speaker 2 (31:16):
I'll say like I've been. I've been on jumping back
and forth like rope on this story because I thought
the guy was a clown for saying anything that would
make a player respond. And then I heard what was said,
and then heard what was alleged and didn't believe for
a second that he said the slur, the derogatory term.
And then when he goes back to the press conference
and is sticking to his guns by calling him to
Galen Ook that that's like, all right, what are we

(31:37):
doing here?

Speaker 5 (31:37):
Yeah, we're going back and forth, Like you really want
him to come out and say the truth, and you're
gonna call him by his government name. You really think
that's gonna help your help the matter.

Speaker 2 (31:44):
No, it's not. No, it's that's clownish behavior.

Speaker 5 (31:46):
It's continuing on and on.

App Fox Sports Radio. He's Aaron Torres, I'm Dan Byer,
Iowa Samus here, as is Jason Stewart. So is Isaac Lohenkron,
Who's at the news desk with some breaking news for us,
some breaking news surrounding the National Football League.

Speaker 1 (32:18):
Breaking news from Fox Sports.

Speaker 7 (32:21):
Fox Sports Jay Glazer just reported that the Las Vegas
Raiders told star pass rusher Max Crosby that they're shutting
him down for the final two games of the season
because of the lingering knee injury that he had previously
played through. Glazer reported that Crosby vehemently disagreed and left
the Raiders facility. I have another NFL note that has

(32:41):
just come down. ESPN reports Green Bay Packers quarterback Jordan
Love won't play tomorrow night against Baltimore due to a concussion.
Malik Willis is expected to get the start there, guys.

Speaker 2 (32:51):

Speaker 1 (33:12):
Two minutes to go in overtime. Joker feeling it.

Speaker 2 (33:20):
Nikola Jokic fifty six last night and the Nuggets victory
over the Minnesota Timberwolves in overtime in Denver unbelievable. The
joker was no joke. It was no joke that USC
and Notre Dame ended their college football rivalry. This has
kind of gotten under your skin a little bit as well.

Speaker 3 (33:38):
Well. I'll be very quick because we have some good
sound from a USC Alum. I don't even care that
it got canceled. But USC is just making stuff up
as to why, Like first of all, the whole week
zero thing. You can't play week zero games unless you're
playing overseas or playing Hawaii, so it's just made up.
If you just don't want to play them because you

(33:59):
don't want to take lost, that's fine, but acknowledge it.
And Ross Ellinger's report actually basically confirmed that as much.

Speaker 6 (34:05):
This week.

Speaker 2 (34:06):
Petros Papadekas, of course, Fox College football analyst and USC alum,
was on the Dan Patrick Show earlier today with Jonas
Knox and Brady Quinnen had this to say, if this.

Speaker 4 (34:16):
Is your job as a leadership position at the universities,
it was your job to preserve this and your job
to understand it and how important it is. And the
truth is, ever since Lincoln Riley got the USC job,
he has tried to wriggle out of games that were
non conference that were difficult. This guy is preoccupied with

(34:42):
making sure they have winnable games all the time. That's
not what the USC coach is supposed to be. Maybe
leadership at US is corroda to the point where it
is but to me, the bar is very high at USC.
If you can't handle that before you even coach one game.
There was talking about the Notre Dame rivalry before he

(35:02):
even coached a game. Then he should not be there either.
It is a travesty.

Speaker 2 (35:08):
It will be different even for fans not of USC
and Notre Dame. Sure, but this rivalry, to me, there's
a bigger thing at stake. You want to know why,
I think that's taken people a while to warm up
to the college football playoff. It's because of rivalry games
like there was already.

Speaker 3 (35:27):
Because all that matters is making the playoffs well.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
And I think, honestly, to some of these schools, what
matters most above anything else is beating your rival. And
so when Ohio State plays Michigan, trust me, he wasn't
the conversation last year. Yeah, Ohio State won the national championship,
but he didn't beat Michigan that year. This year, it

(35:50):
was the only game for Ohio State. It was the
Michigan game. And I would think that USC Notre Dame
rises to that level. No, I'm not stupid enough to
say that USC could go one in ten, one and
eleven every year and if they beat Notre Dame every season,
that that is a good enough season, but I think
that's these rivalry games and now we're essueing them for

(36:11):
the college football playoff, like that's why we're getting diminishing
returns as well.

Speaker 3 (36:15):
Yeah, I just I think there's a broader metaphor what
you're getting to, which is just literally everything is now
just totally built towards making the playoff and nothing else matters.
And that's not what college football is or ever has been.

Speaker 2 (36:29):
It's tough. Even the quarterfinal games is the casuals? You
and I'll be locked into them. Jason Stewart and I
had a conversation a couple of days ago. First round
didn't do anything for him. Second round. We have great names,
great teams, but is it drawing you to the TV
like you do? You have to see the Cotton Bowl,
the see Ohio State and Miami on New Year's Eve night.

(36:50):
I think it's an easy question for you and me,
but I don't think it's an easy answer for a
lot of other people out there.

Speaker 3 (36:56):
A lot to discuss Petro's Did you know Petro's did
a great job. I know he's done a great job
at AM five point seventy on his show as well.

Speaker 2 (37:02):
Do people want to see Indiana win the Rose Bowl
and go on to win a national championship. We'll discuss
that he's erin Torres. I'm Dan Byer. That's next on
