Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. Hope you
had a great sports weekend. I hope you wished your
mother and the mother of your children a happy Mother's
Day and more than they get ready for a great
week in sports. Western Eastern Conference playoffs, about to get
(00:47):
it away in Oh yeah, PGA Championship week Like what yeah?
I remember they switched the dates totally forgot quick aside
on that in one second. The Doug Gotlip Show brought
you by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so
we know how to cover almost anything. When it's game time.
Have an experienced player help you stay ahere of the game,
put their experience into play at Farmers dot com. You
(01:11):
know what it reminds me of. It reminds me of
have you ever done this. Have you ever done this
where you forget which is it set my clocks ahead
or set my clocks back, and you screw it up
and you wake up and you're doing things and it's
completely the wrong hour. I remember distinctly when I was
a kid, we used to have to go to Sunday school,
(01:32):
and my parents took us an hour early to Sunday school.
We just got screwed up in terms of the time.
And I don't know why. It was fall fall back,
and we rushed there and there was nobody there. Then
we went at what would have been the appropriate time,
but even that was an hour earlier then we went.
And that's what it feels like with the PGA Championship.
I didn't even I do this for a living, and
(01:52):
I was like, man, why did they keep talking about
Best Page Black and the p G A, oh, it's
this week. They moved it up. Anyway, We'll get to
that a little bit later on in the week. We
got a little bit of football for you. Interesting news
in both college basketball in the NBA, with John b.
Line leaving Michigan to head to coach to Cleveland Cavaliers.
(02:13):
Did not see that one coming, and of course we
have the Friday night game, which apparently took place too
long ago for us to lead with, which is Warriors
upset the Houston Rockets. My partying words for you on
Friday was that the Warriors would advance. I did not
think they would win on Friday. I did think they
would find a win, a way to win one of
(02:35):
the two games. What an incredible win and the way
in which they won will get to, But let's let's
go to what we saw yesterday. Kawhi Letard gets the ball.
Everyone knows he's getting the ball, everyone knows he's shooting
the ball, and though he left it short, didn't leave
it as short as his free throw. Then he makes
(02:56):
a game winning shot. Now, I I've seen a lot
of basketball in my life, a lot. And I've seen
a lot of buzzer beaters in my life a lot.
I can't recall, for the life of me a buzzer
beater where with a leather basketball in college basketball, in
high school basketball, they use the synthetic balls and sometimes
(03:18):
you get some odd bounces. I cannot recall one where
the ball hits the front rim twice, carms to the
back rim twice, then up and finds a way into
the goal. I've never seen that before in that situation,
but that's exactly what happened. And Kawhi Leonard ends up
(03:41):
putting up when you put up forty one points point,
simply amazing. Now he did. He did a little bit
of the tebow thing right where by missing a free
throw he started to fire that he then put out.
But he had been putting out the few had been
extinguishing the fire all afternoon long. And it's just interesting
(04:04):
to me on what appeals to us in the media
and what appeals to fans. And I'm not gonna doubt
or deny the way in which he handled everything in
San Antonio left many people with a bad taste in
their mouth. What was the deal? I mean, basically it
was he felt like he was not cared for properly,
(04:24):
and they thought he was. They thought he was ready.
This was almost like an old Western movie, right, what
every old Western movie I've ever watched and gun Smoke,
who apparently a lot of you people do watch. It
always starts, there's always a fight when somebody calls the
other one a liar. You called me a liar, right,
(04:46):
And that's what the San Antonio Spurs said to Kauai Leonard,
we think you're healthy enough to go, and he said,
you called me a liar, and it became a shootout
or a standoff at the Okay Corral, and I ended
up for at least a year in Toronto. But I
don't know whether you want to compare him to Trout
as I did last week, or to Andrew Luck. But
(05:10):
somehow we've gotten away from the idea of it's an
okay thing to just be about your craft. It's an
okay thing to be like we've made fun of Andrew
Luck for years with having a flip phone when he
was in college and not being a guy who's on
social media. Aaron Rodgers won all the swag points yesterday
(05:31):
because he was on he had a cameo and Game
of Thrones. Andrew Luck hasn't. I don't even know, like
we make fun of Andrew lux Beard because you got
Captain Andrew Luck on Twitter. And I love Aaron Rodgers
and I think to this point he's been the better quarterback.
But I will tell you there's something to the way
and Andrew Luck just goes about his job, doing his
(05:54):
job right. The first couple of years in the late
we wanted I didn't have endorsements. He had thirty three
wins in the first three years with a terrible aging roster.
And now once he gets back healthy and they get
him an offensive line. Look what happened to the Indianapolis Colts.
(06:14):
Now Kawhi Leonard plays nine games last year and people
say he's all kinds of different things. They manage his
load this year and rest him at was sometimes inopportune times,
and it pays them dividends With one fade away jump shot,
like I don't know if it's Trout, if it's Luck,
(06:36):
if it's Kauai, or if they're all kind of some
similar You know what, They're good guys, They're good human beings.
They have no personal baggage off the floor. These aren't
guys that have been rumored to be in the club,
not guys to be to have any sort of any
sort of issues with women. And yet when the lights
(06:57):
are on, the popcorns popping, you seem to be able
to depend them to play at or above their optimum level.
Time and again, I guess Trott would be the only
guy you can't because he's only been in three postseason games.
And he didn't hit well in those three postseason games,
but such a small sample size. Kauai does, in fact speak.
(07:17):
Here's his voice recorded. Swear to God, he speaks after
the game. I'm a guy to acts like I've been
there before, so probably last time you've probably see me scream.
It's like when we won. So whenever it's like a
moment where I haven't really experienced, I probably try to
give some emotion, show some emotion and let it, let
it just come out. So you know, tonight was one
(07:39):
of those nights. I've never been in that situation before.
And like he said, um, it's the first shot somebody
hit a gay winner and then in game seven, so
I'll just showed emotion. I mean, he even has to
explain why he's showing emotion. I know I'm not so
(08:00):
most it's like a robot. I know I'm not supposed
to Johnny five is alive. I'm not supposed to show emotion,
but I did show him, Like, dude, you don't gotta
explain it. We were I was watching the game on
my couch with my son. My mom was there, my
wife was there. My wife's like looking down at her
phone at the time we jump up and go oh
my god, oh my god. And again it wasn't even
(08:20):
that he made the shot. It was that he shot
the ball and then it hits the rim be like okay,
miss wait no wait no, wait no, oh my god.
And then my wife looks up, what what happened? I
can't believe you're not watching? Well. One are the things
that we always want our athletes to do. We want
(08:42):
them to get better, a right work at their craft.
Here's the guy who's the center in high school that
is slowly in progressively become a dynamic perimeter player. We
want them to play both ends, he does. We want
them to play well in championships, he does. We want
them to act like they've been there before, he does.
When do we get to the point to where you
have to be so, you know, involved in social media
(09:05):
and have a bunch of commercials and and where are
these dumb clothes before the game for thirty seconds that
apparently they don't even pick out themselves, Like, when do
we get to that point where that is worthy of discussion?
But instead it's he just made a play in Game
(09:26):
seven Eastern Conference Semifinals and made it in a way
in which I've never seen happen before. So you want
to give me luck, I'll give you. I'll take Luck,
I'll take Trout, I'll take Kauai, I'll take guys that
they don't have to talk the talk. They just walked
the walk pretty amazing. I mean even he said after
(09:54):
the game, Hey, you know I left the free throw short.
I tried not leave that short, and he did, in
fact leave it short, but he had to shoot it
over Joel embiid, Like, we've gotten to the place where
we're we're having to explain and sympathize with Joel embiad
for crying, Like why is it okay for Joean Bead
to cry? Like twenty three years old playing playing his guts?
(10:15):
Is he in great shape? No, he needs to be
in better shape, but that does That's not even the
point that dude's unbelievable. He's an unbelievable player and he's
still learning what he can do and how he can
do it. And he did everything he could defensively to
to to guard Kauai Leonard without fouling him. And I
(10:37):
just made a great chot. Good defense, better offense, tip
your cap. Yeah, you're led to cry it's okay means
it meant something to you and you're allowed to show emotion. Kauai.
You don't have to apologize to us. We were all
showing emotion. Rick Buker from FS one and Bleacher Point
joins the show up coming next, I will get to
(10:59):
what the seventies sixers will do. We'll get to what
the Rockets will do, and I'm gonna ask him, has
anyone ever handled the situation like the Warriors have any
better than the Warriors have. We'll discuss that next. Be
sure to catch live editions of the Doug Dot Leaps

(12:04):
Buke Hm, I can't decide, honestly, can't decide. Have you
ever seen a game end with a shot hitting the
front rim twice, back rim twice, then falling in the way?
Didn't Toronto? You know it's funny. I I immediately thought
of Alan Houston's shot that took the Knicks over the
Miami Heat. I believe that was an eight versus a
(12:27):
one seed when they made their way to the finals.
In the lockout here, I want to say that was
the year, But I went back and I looked at
that clip and it hit the rim, hit the backboard,
and went in. So it wasn't even close. So no,
I don't know that I've ever seen a shot of
that import hit the rim that many times and fall through,
(12:49):
especially from that angle from that distance. Uh, just a remarkable,
a remarkable shot. Um, you can't. You can't plan him
that way. I want to give him credit and that
he he shot it high, he shot it with touch,
But that really is that's the basketball god shining down
(13:09):
upon the Toronto Raptors. That's what that is, No, no
question about it. Um any sense of this changes anything
about his future killer shot. Just the idea of like,
if they keep winning, you know, I like, like, it's
gotta be gonna be hard to walk away from when
(13:29):
you keep winning, it's gotta be hard to although he
walked away from San Antonio and they were always away. Look,
this is this is where I'm torn because I when
when it first happened, I was told that when Kauai
was up there for the All Star Game, I was
up there for the All Star Game, coldest perfect, and
that Kauai never left is his room other than to
(13:53):
go to whatever he had to go to, Yeah, just
because it's so cold. Yeah. Now, you spend a winner,
You spend a winner there, You find out how to
handle the cold, you find out that you're not there
that much, You find out what going through customs is
and isn't, and then you weigh that with the success
(14:14):
that your team has had and what your overall aspirations
are and what that's all about. Look, I can't help
but feel like what happens is going to influence his decision.
It's it's not a foregone conclusion that he's going to
l A and he's playing for the Clippers. But I've
always felt that, So I would put it this way.
(14:35):
There going to the conference finals, the possibility of them
going to the finals, the possibility of them winning that
winning it all. I believe that all of those things
will have an influence on his decision, and that that
decision has not been made yet. Rick Buker joining us
on the Doug Otlix Show. What now the seventies sixers? Boy,
(14:59):
it's a great question. I you know, from everything I
was heard, I was hearing going in probably anticipating a
or not, Probably are anticipating a coaching change. Brown looked
like a man who has resigned. Said uh, certainly in
Game seven, it wasn't the same energy that I've seen
with him if he was a video character sense, So
(15:25):
I think you're gonna see a change there. But ultimately
it's do you look at the pieces that they have
and I'll throw it back to you. I don't see
if you can't keep all four Tobias Harris, Jimmy Butler, Joel,
and then I don't see a ready made answer as
(15:46):
to who it is that you do keep these are
the to the three guys out of the four that
you must keep, because I just it's not a combination
that fits. Yes, they went to the wire against the
Toronto Raptors. Do I look at this team and say
(16:06):
they are ascending, that they are going to get better?
I think their individual individual pieces can Joel and Bead
will be a better player. Ben Simmons is still growing
as a player, Tobias Harris. But is this team collectively
built to take the next step. I don't believe they are. So.
I think there's some really hard decisions that have to
(16:29):
be made by Alton Brand this summer, and it comes
with changing the core of that team moving forward, and
we'll ultimately see whether he makes the right decisions. That's
the voice of Rick Bucker from Bleacher Report and Fox
Sports One. He joins the Doug Gottlip Show here on
Fox Sports Radio. All Right, let's let's dial back to
Friday night. Um, it's one of the bummers about a
(16:49):
game happening Friday night. Is I don't get a chance
to talk about it on Monday. Um. As as remarkable
as the finish was, I actually thought the first half
was more remarkable because step didn't score a point. And here,
as I told people what happened, the Warriors cycled through
their entire bench essentially and ran sets they probably hadn't
(17:10):
run in, you know, in a couple of months, and
just we're able to hang around and keep that thing
tied so that Steph and Clay could carry them through.
I mean, Clay obviously great in the first half Game six, Clay, Uh,
you're walking away. Impressions of Game six in Houston is
what well that It's not often you can say a
(17:32):
game was lost in the first half, but I feel
as if the Rockets lost that game in the first
half for exactly as you said, Um, the most startling
thing for me, and it makes a lot of sense.
But if it hadn't worked, Steve Kerr would have been
raked over the cold. As it is, he looked at
as having made a genius move, and it was essentially this,
(17:56):
We're gonna make the Rockets uncomfortable on the O in
their buildings by playing faster than they How are we
to do that with a rotation of essentially six players,
especially with the way Sean Livingston had been playing. We're
gonna have to roll it out there and We're gonna
(18:17):
hope that we can just we can keep the tempo,
make the Rockets play faster than they want to play.
And so Steve kerr after through the first five games
of that series, four of those games there were only
two guys off the bench who played more than ten minutes.
(18:38):
He got a total of no more than fifty minutes
from his bench out of any of those games. In
game six, he had five guys off the bench who
played double digit minutes, and he got eighty minutes out
of his bench. He got a whole half an hour
(18:58):
out of his bench, and he lived to tell about it,
playing Jordan's Bell, playing Quim Cook, playing Jonas Drevco. And
so I just feel as if it's really people use
it as a referendum on the style that the Rockets
play as being the reason they lost. You know, the
(19:19):
reason they lost is because their star players did not
come with the requisite energy two abuse Quinn Cook and
Jordan's Bell and Jonas Drupco and allowed them to stay
on the floor and play them even bottom line, that's
what it is. Those guys, Steve Kers should have been
(19:41):
forced to take those guys off the floor. They never were,
and it allowed the Warriors simply to outlast the Houston Rockets.
I agree, I think that the conditioning of it. I
also think some of it is in the way in
which the Rockets play, where you know, you put the
ball in James Harden's hands so much in the first
half that he's just not the same guy late in
(20:02):
the latent series, late in the game. Whereas and some
of it what they I don't think they necessarily wanted
to sit step as much because the foul trouble. But
Steph just had juice, had had juice, and and then
he makes a couple of just ridiculous shots. And then
like I haven't looked, I'm guessing Andrew Goodala didn't make
five threes the entire rest of the season. I can't
(20:23):
remember the last time. And he makes five threes in
one game. Oh, in my game, there's no chance. No,
I mean, I guarantee you, I guarantee you, there's I'm
not even sure he took five threes in a game
over the course of the season because they were they
were they were keeping him under wraps. But here's a
here's the element that I think is overlooked because Steph
(20:44):
did not score in the first half. And this is
something that he did all series long that I believe
was a secret ingredient in Game six, which is why
was he in foul trouble. It wasn't because they were
just stupid it silly fouls or inadvertent fouls. It was
because he was being aggressive playing defense. He was accepting
(21:08):
the challenge and he went out there and he played
defense with tremendous energy. Did it end up putting him
on the bench, Yes, but it also set an example
for Cook and Jarevko and Jordan's Bell and everybody else,
which was Jeff had the perfect excuse not to play
hard at that end of the floor because Katie's not there,
(21:30):
presumably he's got to carry a bigger offensive responsibility than ever.
Do you know how this goes, Hey, I can't play
defense to night Fellas because I gotta take care of
us at the other end. She Stef didn't approach it
that way. He didn't approach it that way all all series.
And I believe that said a great example that the
rest of the team followed. And you did not see
(21:51):
the same thing from the Rockets, and they followed that
example as well. I'm looking by the way, Igudala made
the most threes he made all season in a game
with three. UM he didn't take any more than five
threes in a game all season long, as well the
entire season, and he makes five. Just I mean that
the um the competitiveness of this competitive greatness, as they say,
(22:15):
Rick Puker, our guest, what now for Houston? If they're
they're in a tough spot, Look, they sell their marketable,
they have a core. They could easily tell themselves, Hey,
if k D leaves, the Warriors aren't the same, We're
the next best team in the Western Conference. All we
gotta do is keep this together, basically the potentially the
(22:41):
Toronto Raptors of the East where Lebron leaves and now
it's it's our conference to lose. I don't know if
there's a market out there to change something dramatically, and
by dramatically essentially means is there a market for Chris Paul?
Because let's my biggest concern. A year later, can I
(23:02):
expect anymore? And he's another guy who everybody looked at
Game six and said, hey, look at that. He came through.
He was the old Chris Paul. He made so many
mistakes defensively, he was so non existent on certain plays
that I'm sorry, I'm not giving him a pass on
(23:22):
Game six. He's not close to the Chris Paul that
we once knew. I don't expect that that's going to
change next year. So I need to find out what's
the market for Chris Paul. Can I refigure this thing
around James Harden because I don't know that I can
move Capella's contract. Um But, and I don't believe that
you come back with the same crew. I believe that
(23:44):
there's a there's a you know, some teams you let
them ride through the disappointment and and it spurred them
on to greater achievements. I don't think the Rockets are
in that place. I think they need to shake up.
I think they need something to change, much like the
Celtics did in hindsight, to convince everybody, hey, we need
(24:05):
to play a different way when everything is on the line.
Because so far two years in a row, I've seen
kind of the same, the same approach too, must need situations,
which was not everybody was all in and getting it done. Um.
I can't think of a team handling the Warriors win
(24:28):
better than the way the Warriors did right. It's not
just that they won, but in at the end of
every sentence was man, we can't wait to get Kevin
Durant back right. It's the It's the polar opposite of
what we saw from the Boston Celtics, and the Celtics
didn't win anything without Kyrie Irving. Um, how much of
(24:49):
this is who they are as people? And how much
of this is is the just the what are we
doing here, guys? Why we break this thing up? We
can next year, in the year after that, in the
year after that. I don't think it's I don't think
it's looking that far ahead. I do believe it's who
they are as people. There's a real look. Never forget
(25:13):
Staff and play and Draymond have all been people who
have been discounted and individually they've never had the success
that they've collectively had. So there's a belief in that.
I mean, it's you know, strength and numbers no longer
applies to what they are, but the belief that that's
(25:34):
where it started is still very much there. I believe
that it's simply their laser focus on we want to
win another one, and we want to win another one.
Right now, and our chances of doing that are much greater,
not only in Katie being here, but Katie believing that
(25:56):
he is vital to our success because we need him
to buy into the collect too. And so this is
our way of saying, Hey, dude, we need you, we
want you, we love you, like, come along on this,
don't be distracted, don't start thinking about anything else, because
(26:16):
we still have work to do, and who knows if
it ultimately works out. But I believe it's simply them
looking at what's our best what's the best way we
could possibly win another ring, And that's not only having Katie,
but having Katie believe that he is vital to us
getting this done. Last thing, Um, the Lakers hire Frank
(26:38):
Vogel and they hire Jason Kidd to be his assistant coach.
Stephen A. Smith has already said Jason Kidd will be
the next head coach of the Lakers. Um, what are you?
What are you hearing from around the league? Over? Because
I've only heard good things about Frank Vogel, right, Like,
you know, he walked into a dumpster fire in Orlando
(27:00):
and wasn't able to put it out in time. Obviously
an Indie they kind of peaked, and then the Paul
George thing and whatever. They couldn't get past Lebron. I've
never heard anybody say that guy can't coach or he's
not a good guy. I haven't heard the same things
about Jason Kidd. But everyone's operating under the assumption that, uh,
this isn't gonna work because Jason Kidd's gonna stab him
in the back while he's coaching. What do you think, Well,
(27:24):
Frank Vogel is a great guy, and I think he's
a very good coach. He is I put him in
the Scott Brooks camp of guys who do not like confrontations. Um,
maybe put Mike D'Antoni in that camp too, guys who
if they have the right guys, they can be successful.
But if you're asking him two get guys to tow
(27:48):
the line, or to change the way they play, or
to buy into a bigger thing that caught that requires
significant sacrifice, he may not be your I I think
the bottom line on this is that from what I understand,
it was the Lakers idea that Jason Kidd be an
assistant coach with tylu Um and that Mark Jackson that
(28:13):
who who the is, who the staff was going to
be was gonna be decided by the warrior, I excuse me,
by the Lakers and not by uh not by lou
And that was one of the sticking points. Frank Vogel
was okay with that, and he was okay with a
three year deal on level with however, Lebron is scheduled
(28:38):
to be there. That ultimately is what got this done.
As to whether Jason is gonna you know what, it's
gonna stab Frank Bogel in the back, or it is
gonna be the next head coach of the Lakers, I
don't have any reason to to say that that's already
in the cars could have happen us. But three years,
(29:02):
this next year, there's a lot that could happen that
would dissuade them from giving Jason Kidd the next shot
to be in the head coach. That's the whole thing
is bizarre though, right just look not knowing exactly who
is making the decisions with the Lakers, With any franchise,
(29:26):
to have any success, your owner, your GM, your head coach,
and your best player have to all be on the
same page. They all have to be an alignment. I
don't know if any of two of those elements with
the Lakers are in alignment, and so you get what
(29:47):
you get. And we can all speculate as to what
the thinking is behind any one of these decisions. The
fact of the matter it is it doesn't appear to
be coming from anyone particular brain trust, and that means
that there are multiple agendas going on, and it's anybody's
guesses to whose agenda is being served by any particular
move Rick, great stuff, look forward to reading more. And
(30:10):
Bleach Report and Senior on Fox Sports One, appreciate being
our guest. And Fox Sports Radio, Rick Buker joined us
to get you to Dan Fire. Yeah, we have some
injury news updates, at least on those Western Conference Finals
as you and Rick, we're talking about. Warriors forward Kevin
Durant will miss game one of tomorrow's matchup against Portland
with his strain calf. No asked for game two of
(30:32):
the Western Conference Finals. ESPN says that Durant will be
reevaluated on Wednesday, but likely to miss that game to
coming up on Thursday. Portland's Rodney Hood's day today with
an injured knee suffered it yesterday's Game seven win against Denver.
The Athletic reports and m R I on the knee
of hood came back clean Cleveland Cavaliers. I fired Michigan

What's the game today? I'm just asking is it? Is
(31:59):
it one of the chances a big deal, a little

because there's a hundred percent chance that Josh Jackson said
don't you know who I am? When he tried to
get it, threw into the v I P without a
v I P pass, right, don't you know? And they

Doug Gotlid shows brought you by Discover Card. We treat
(33:26):
you like you treat you. What do you, Doug? The
game today is alright, big deal, little deal or no deal?
Doug that. An NBC Sports report says the Sixers may
try to trade Ben Simmons to the Lakers for Lebron James.
I like I'm about to tweet at Chris Brussard is like, hey,
Philly needs a point guard, and uh, Houston needs to
(33:47):
get out of that contract, so why not trade you know,
Ben Simmons to Houston because Houston has a ton of
need for guys that don't shoot threes and need to
have the basketball. Oh eight, they actually have no use
for guys that don't shoot threes and need to add
the basketball. Yeah, I don't see him going to Houston. Look,
(34:11):
I think the Sixers should pick up the phone, should call.
I don't think Lebron James is leaving. I don't think
he's close to He ain't leaving, dude. He moved his
kids and he and and by the way, the Lakers
are sure as hell not like, hey, let's bail on Lebron.
One year in when we didn't think we were gonna
win big anyway, we just changed everything and hired a
(34:34):
coach to like, it's not happening, but okay, big deal,
little deal or no deal. That The seventies Sixers as
the are the odds on favorite to keep Jimmy Butler
this off season. Bet online is the Sixers is a
four to five favorite, followed by the Rockets at five
to one, Nicks at six to one, in the Nets
at seven to one, with both the Lakers and Clippers
(34:54):
at eight to one. Um, yeah, I don't think anybody knows,
you know. Yeah, is that a big deal though, that
the Sixers could be the leader in the clubhouse. I
never thought that he was like for Philadelphia long term.
That's why I kind of surprised me. Well, I mean, look,
I I think that that because he performs so well
(35:18):
at times in the playoffs that they're they're in the well,
you know, like, look, he's kind of a pain, but
he's super competitive and plays his best at the most
important times. We'd put up with it, as opposed to
somewhere else he'd have to kind of adapt to yet
another new culture. I don't think it's that crazy big deal,
a little deal or no deal that an m R
I in the knee of Rodney Hood came back clean
(35:39):
and the Portland Rollblazers forward is considered day today. Uh,
no deal. I mean, I think he just got scared
getting screened from behind and nobody called it. I didn't.
I didn't look like a massive injury, and he's been
playing so much better, so I'll go a little little deal,
not no deal, A little deal, big deal, little deal
or no deal that the Milwaukee Bucks will level week
(36:00):
off before playing games in the NBA playoffs. Is their
Eastern Conference final series will start Wednesday against Toronto? Wait
one more time, Is it a big deal that the
Bucks have a week off between games of the playoffs?
Big deal, A little deal, no deal? Deal? We I mean,
it's not like giving off for three weeks or their
(36:20):
baseball players whatever. They got a chance to rest up.
They were great there, they were great and and they're
fresh rested. It's not like it's a five minute game.
It's a forty eight minute game where they can get
everybody going. I think it's no deal, big deal, a
little deal or no deal. That Mavericks forward Chris stops
Porzingis was allegedly jumped at a club in Latvia. That
(36:40):
feels like a big deal, doesn't it. It's like a
big deal, Like he gets literally jumped. Shouldn't he be
celebrated when he comes home to Latvia? One would think
the report says that there were a bunch of Russians,
that's according to tnc, that jumped him. Someone may have
thrown a chair at him. But that's where's his brother?
(37:01):
His brother is like he never goes anywhere with his
brother than his brother wasn't in that video, And I
guess that would be why you don't vacation in Latya.
Get it, Get it, guy, got it? I got it,
I laughed, chuckle. There's no big deal, little deal or
no deal that former Jets and Giants quarterback Gino Smith
(37:24):
is reportedly starting with the Seahawks ESPNS as it could
happen Wednesday and could paddle backs Paxton Lynch for the
backup job. A little deal. I mean, Gina Smith, nice backup,
can't play. I couldn't play with the Chargers. That's why
they let his contract expire. Big deal, little deal or
no deal that John Ramos didn't think Kawhi Leonard shot
(37:44):
was a big deal. That's a big deal, is a
big deal and ended the the playoff series and did
so as the buzzer expired over the stretched arm of
Joel Embiid. It was Kawai Leonard who sat squatting in
the corner watching it bounce, bounce up and in. That's
a big deal, John told me before the show would
have been a better, better shot if they were down
by one. So that's well, there was no pressure on
(38:10):
it because there was a tie game. Hey, I like
the angle, the creativity finally dug big deal, little deal
or no deal. That Chick fil a and McDonald's are
reportedly eyeing vegan options for their menus. That feels like
a big deal. It does breakthrough for vegans. Right, have
you tried the what is it was? That burger called
(38:33):
the impossible burger? You were tried an impossible burger. It's
actually amazing. It's actually amazing, and it's vegan and it
looks red and taste delicious. I haven't seen Ryan Music
gets so excited about something. It's actually really really good.
It's really good. It's really good and good for you.
(38:53):
It's crazy and I think good for the environment too. Right,
something with the methane pals have a lot of and
that's bad for the environment. I'm not sure for where
the cows dealt it. This is game time on the
Duck Gottlieb Show. You can't play the smellers the feller
(39:13):
with cows because they're all the smellers and then they're
all the fellers. Right, That's that's how that's how it works.
That's how it works. Did you have anybody in the
Game of Thrones? Are you a Game of Thrones? Gay music?
That's going to be a no. John Ramo says he's
only second to Dan, who's the biggest game at Hold On?
Hold On Season one, Episode two is what we're through.
(39:36):
We started it this weekend. How do how do you
watch it? Um? On our couch? We we started it
Saturday with the Amazon or Netflix. Um just on demand? Oh,
it's on demand from on season one on? But you
have the whole series is on demand on HBO? Yeah? Yes?
Do you have to have HBO to do it? Yes? Okay,
I don't even know if I have HBO. Seriously so
(39:58):
much seven steps to finally figure out how it is frustrating, huh,
and it's so far. I've I've seen the first episode
with the White Walkers. I've seen it and it was
kind of cool. I mean, I don't know if it's
good enough for me to stay up on Sunday nights
and tweet about it and spoil everybody's Sunday and watching it.
I agree with that, all right? Coming up next, the
(40:18):
Golden State Warriors are different from any other team. I
can think of. It wasn't that they won on Friday,
it's what they did after they won on Friday, which
leads me to think Kevin Ranch should never leave. That's

At Farmers dot com. We are Farmers. So Friday night,
(41:05):
the Golden State Warriors went into Houston and gotta win.
Um and uh, I'm gonna take a quick victory lap
because I'm texting Ryan Music during the game. And look,
I've had some bad predictions before. I've seen things differently
than others before and gotten them wrong. But I do
(41:28):
think that when I pay it, pay a lot of
attention to a basketball game or a basketball series, I
can tell you what's gonna happen before it happens, and
instead of replaying for you all the sound, I was
texting music and music's out. We had in a movie?
Is that where you were? No, I was just having
dinner and I'm like, are you watching this? Like what's happening?
(41:50):
And I was like, it kind of feels like I
wrote the script for the game. And then you went
back and watched it back and what what was your takeaway?
Pretty pretty spot on in terms of game plan for
each team, the rotations that Steve Kerr and the Warriors
were gonna be doing, and how they were going to
try and use those matchups of Curry and the way
(42:13):
they were going to attack the Rockets defense and playing big.
Pretty spot on with how it all unfolded. So basically
the premise was this, like, first for the Rockets, I
thought they had to get Chris Paul going, and they did.
And the best way to get Chris Paul going is
to stop this nonsense of playing him like he's James
Hardening go one on one or playing him off of
James Harden. Give him the ball. And because the Warriors
(42:35):
had to go big and they had to go with
Kvan Looney, they even played boguts some that means that
to match them, Houston was going big. That's fine. Now
you have a one five pick and roll and that's
where Chris Paul is one of the best that there
have ever been in the NBA at manipulating, which is
pick and roll. That's what got him going, in addition
to which he wasn't always playing against starters. And then
(42:57):
for the Warriors, I thought, and of course some of
it was the foul trouble to Steph Curry, but I thought, look,
you're gonna you're gonna want to play your entire It's
a quick turnaround. If you lose, would have played on
Sunday at twelve Pacific Coast time, so less than forty
eight hours later. And oh yeah, by the way, those
those other guys got have more juice and maybe they
(43:17):
could tire the rockets out and you can run all
of your different offensive sets, which is what they did
and it kept them in the game. They ran actual offense,
and people were talking about what's the ball movies like, no,
it wasn't. They were actually running play set plays that
you you don't run when you have Steph and Clay
and Kevin Durant. You just don't because of how they
guard you. And then of course in the second half
(43:41):
it became much more and they ran some different stuff
with Stephan Clay and Steph Curry was magnificent thirty three
points all in the second half, um and I mean
he was utterly in completely dominant and then like kind
of lost in it is. You know, the Rockets had
(44:02):
missed some free throws down the stretch in previous games.
We even saw Kauai Letard miss a free throw before
he hit the game winner. Like Steph Curry made eight
consecutive free throws and it felt like not one of
them touched anything other than the net, and like he
just got out there and what what what what what?
(44:22):
And it's I want the NBA to get to to
bring bring in a one and one, not one plus one.
I want one and one. Best players in the world
should be able to make a one in one. But regardless,
even with two shots, which they all get, it's hard
to make two free throws in a row eight straight times,
and he made it look effortless, in addition to a
couple of other absolutely ridiculous shots that he made. But
(44:48):
that's not what impressed me. I've seen Steph Curry do
that before. I've seen Clay Thompson in Game six play
that like that before. I've seen Draymond Green do this before.
I've even seen in Andrea Goodalla stepa up when it's
called upon, you're gonna leave him open. That's what the
Calves did going back four years ago when they won
their first title. That's why he was the finals m
(45:08):
v P. He was open for a reason, guy, and
he made the Cavaliers pay. But you know I've never
seen before. I'm gonna play for your three consecutive sound bites.
I'll talk a little bit in between them, but but
here's Clay Thompson after the game. Like Steve Curse said,
we don't have the ultimate luxury tonight, a man who
(45:29):
can just go out there and get you forty on
a win. So we had to play a little more
diligent with the ball. We had to be more Chris
with our passes. We couldn't and the room for air
was a lot less compared to when Kevin's out there.
I'm happy we won so we can get some rest
and get him healthy, because if we're gonna get this
three P we desk what we need him back. You
know he's our best player, so we dearly miss him
(45:51):
in we'll hold it down while he's out, but it's
not the same without him, far from it. That's Clay Thompson, Mr.
Game six, Mr. Everyone Things. Clay wants respect, Clay wants
to be the man. Clay wants to to be paid.
Here's Steph Curry, step close out. Games are always the
hardest and you didn't have your guy Kevin Durant tonight.
(46:12):
How are you guys a able to close him out?
Oh no, we Uh we stay composed there before one
big games stunner on the road. We miss our guy
and know he's gonna be back, but we had to
have us back. We talked about all the time this
whole playoff run. He's been the best, fighting the lead,
he's carried us, so the least we could do us
We'll have us back tonight. Uh move on to the
(46:35):
next round and give ourselves a chance to be a
full strength the rest of the way. Here's Draymond Green. Yeah,
we're gonna get him back now. In this world which
we operate under this assumption that Steph Curry and Clay
times like, yeah, see we're still awesome. We don't need him,
(47:00):
They said the opposite. A long time ago, when this
deal actually was consummated, I was working. It was like
the fourth of July, I believe. I think it was
fourth of July. Fourth of July. I was working at
CBS at the time, and I was the one who
chose to not take the day off because I heard
it was coming down. And I said, what kind of
(47:20):
man is won an m v P award and goes
to another guy and says, hey, I want you on
my team. Yeah, I realized that might eclipse me. Well,
your shadow might eclipse me some right. That's like Tim
Duncan did that obviously when he walked him in La
Marcus Aldrich, come take my team. Eventually it'll be yours.
You can take my position as well. And I walked away,
(47:46):
or I shut off the TV on Friday night, thinking
those are some kind of men, because all of us
have egos, all of us want to be respected. You know,
when when I was getting ready to come over to
Fox Sports Radio, I got a call from I was
called once a week from Colin Coward. You gotta come
(48:06):
work here, you gotta come work here, you gotta come
work here in this place. The best are people are
the best, Our boss are the best. We're gonna have
the best lineup. This is the best. But even that, like,
I'm not gonna eclipse him. I'm not taking his time slot.
You know, I'm not stopping him from making more money.
That's not the same. I'm not taking his show. As
(48:28):
much as that speaks well for Colin, this makes it
pale in comparison. And then it also brought up and
I saw Kevin Durant or the I G of k
D celebrating when they won Game six. At some point,
is somebody gonna grab him and go, hey, dude, I
don't know if you realize this. Let's assume they win
another NBA title. I don't know if you realize this,
(48:51):
but Michael Jordan never won four in a row, and
you very well could. Matter of fact, no one's ever
won four in a row into the Boston Celtics did.
And while you'd never catch the Celtics, why couldn't you
catch the bulls? Why couldn't you pass the bulls? Like
I get it, Sometimes it gets old and it gets
(49:12):
sluggish and it becomes the same thing. And we'll try
and kind of figure that thing out. But what would
be more memorable being the guy who tried to save
the New York Knicks and maybe accomplishes it, or being
the guy who leads the Golden State Warriors to four
five six. Remember remember when Lebron was like not one,
(49:36):
not two, not three, not four, Remember that that could
be the Warriors. And you have a bunch of guys
who in the one moment where they could take a
victory lap and go see, we're still awesome. They said,
that was fun, but we need thirty five back because
he's our best player. Two things I have never seen
(49:59):
before or in the n B A that and then
quiet leonards fall away jump shot, hit the front rim twice,
hit the background twice, and then go in. I think
it speaks to the Warriors as men, It speaks to
the culture of the program of the Warriors, and I
(50:21):
think it should say it should be a signal to
Kevin Durant. Hey, dude, you're gonna be the best player
wherever you go. But we already respect you, we already
love you. Yeah, we can win, take your healthy, but
we know we can't do this without you. And if
you're the Rockets, you're just sitting there like the Raptors, right,
hopeful that thing implodes. But there's there's there's this sense like, well,
(50:45):
you know, he had to go to a super team.
What do you think the Knicks would be if he
goes there with Kyrie Irving and say they drafted Zion Williamson, Right,
Like there's a oh, well, Lebron didn't go to a
super team. Amy the hell he didn't. They got Chris
Bosh that Dwyane Wade was already there had been in
(51:07):
the finals M v P. You Oh yeah, by the way,
a year later they get ray Allen. Now this is
a magnificent team with two magnificent players and kind of
the ultimate gritty glue guy player in a Draymond Green.
And and look there they have issues. I don't know
(51:28):
how much longer ago Dolly can do it. Livingston seems
to be on his last legs. They haven't found that
kind of next generation off the bench. There's still stuff
to work through. But you mean to tell me it's
not fun winning. It's not fun being so well respected
that in the very moment where they should celebrate their
own greatness, they're openly saying, hey, that was fine, but
(51:54):
we need the other fella back because he actually makes
everything so much better. They basically Kevin Durant peanut butter.
All right, peanut butter makes everything better. Oh wait, what
do you mean doesn't? Of course it does. How good chocolate?
Great chocolate, peanut butter? Do you like celery? Celery and
(52:15):
peanut butter? I love a Chris Chris Apple apples and
peanut butter. All right? How good jelly on a sandwich?
You ever read jelly sandwich? Of course, not peanut butter
and jelly. That's they just said. Kevin Durant is no
Steph is an apple, pure clean crisp. Draymond's more selery
(52:41):
a right, Draymond's more uh jelly, he's jelly. He's fine.
Some people like him, some people don't. Put him with
peanut butter. You're like, man, that is really solid on
some white bread with a cold glass of milk. All right.
I actually Clay is more apple and Steph is more chocolate.
(53:05):
There you go, but it's all better with peanut butter.
It's all better with peanut butter. NBA champion Matt Barnes
joins the show up coming next does he think this
should change what Kevin Durant wants to do and has
he ever seen a shot go up the front rim
twice and go in the way that Kawhi Leonards did?
And what's he think of the Lakers higher We'll ask

(54:11):
Fox Sports Radio. Matt Barnes joins us he's one an
NBA championship with the Dubs. I just played three soundbites, Matt,
where you know, instead of taking a victory lap and
telling in the world how good they are when they
were incredible, the Warriors all to a man said, well,
good now we get Kevin Durant back. Is this is
that really how they are or they simply playing the
(54:33):
media game. Um. I really just think, you know, after
going to you know, obviously it was a hell of
a series, but they're ultim going to us on the ring.
So I mean I said, half off they'd beat you know,
Houston underman, but at the end of the day that
they're going to be yours the championship. Yeah. But um,
(54:53):
I did find it remarkable though that they all said
you instead of saying, look, we were good before k D,
will be good after k D. They were all like,
we need k D back. Um, I actually think they do.
As much as it was an unbelievable one game win,
it would have been really hard to beat the Rockets
for four games without Kevin Durant. Fair absolutely, you know,
I think and I think before the people give Rockets
(55:15):
you know, a really hard time. People have to understand.
You know, I've been around four Big four dynasties, you know,
the early Lakers, um, the Bulls, the Lakers and the
mid two thousand's and then this is another dynasty, you know,
instead of so I see people really trying to tear
he's in. You know, granted they possibly should have won,
but they've come across the dynasty, you know what I mean?
If that doesn't happen too often, I think people have
(55:38):
to understand how good the Warriors are, you know, with
or without Kad. Granted they're better with him and Boogie,
but you know, they're still a very capable team without
even one of them. Yeah, it's great point you put out.
I put in that pointed out last week. Nobody's talking
about they were down two starters without without Boogie. Imagine
if they had Boogie as well. Um, okay, So if
you were k D, let's say they win this thing.
(55:59):
I mean I get you could do the New York
thing and try and or you could just keep winning titles.
Like why isn't there the value on being the team
that can win four in a row? Something hasn't been
done since the Celtics in the sixties. Um, I mean,
who is Who's who's the say there isn't you know
what I mean? I think a lot of speculation has
been going around, but you haven't actually heard Katie say anything,
(56:19):
you know what I mean. So I think it's the
media speculating, you know, people saying, you know, he's gonna
team up with Kyrie, or he's gonna Keeme up with
Kawai and those the Clippers. I think it's everyone's just speculation.
But you know, who's to say. You know, I've been
an interview last week and I don't even think Katie knows,
you know what I mean. I think he's focused on
obviously right now getting better, but winning another championship. So
who's this day. He doesn't just sit there and they
just try to pile as me champ just as possible.
(56:41):
Matt bar joining us in the Dougalltip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. If you're Houston, what do you do? Oh
Man tough? I think, you know, the analytics thing is really,
you know, really an overrated situation, you know what I mean.
They're they're great. You know in the past, they've been
great in the regular season, but you know they've continue
to run it up against the dynasty. Um, so you know,
(57:03):
at the end of the day, it's it's guys that
can make plays down the stretching in big moments and
they haven't been able to do that. Um. Like I
said to not to knock them though, because they ran
into a dynasty. So I don't know what it is
is whether it's getting another piece, um, understanding what they're
up against. Um. You know, obviously James is, you know,
one of the best players in the world. You know,
(57:25):
Chris is still a very solid player. But on the
back side of his career, you know, are they capable
of adding another star? Who knows that, you know, if
they would, anyone else would fit in that system with
how ball dominant those two guys aren't. So it's just
a really a tough situation, I'm sure of frustrating situation
because they have, you know, arguably a top two or
three team in the NBA. They just keep working into
the waters. Yeah, it's like like the Knicks back when
(57:46):
when Jordan was Jordan was around obviously the one the
two years that he wasn't one year they went to
the NBA Finals. Matt Bars joining us on the Doug
Gottlieb Show, What do you make of the Lakers? Higher? Um,
it's a safe higher. I mean, you know, he did
really well in Indiana. Um, it's I think with Laker fans,
(58:07):
with Messig situations up and and is just the expectations,
you know, whether it be by the media or be
by the fans. They think, you know, a new coach
higher or bringing Lebron like they think the magic happens overnight,
you know, and everything is a process in this league.
You know, the Warriors weren't an overnight success. You know,
right up until they won their final championship, we were
(58:27):
you know, beating them, yeah at the Clipper, you know
what I mean. And they took their hard knocks and
learned from it and you know, been one of the
best teams ever since. But I think expectations are always
so unrealistic for UM from the fan and then from
the l A media that you know, I think, you know,
they have shown that the Ramases are are a vital
(58:48):
party decision making. You know, you heard phill Jackson's name
giving um Vogel the snamp of approval. So they they've
got their front office, I guess, you know, so whether
people like it or not, this is but they have
and I think we just have to wait to see
how they work out, you know, instead of criticizing or
they should have did this. They should have did that.
They hired coach Vogel, you know. So now the next
step is trying to Um, you don't get a couple
of big time free agentes this summer and see what
(59:10):
next thing is next season brings them. What what do
you make of this, this narrative that Jason kids give
me the next head coach. Anyway, it's only a matter
of time. I mean, it doesn't surprise me because, like
I said, it goes back to expectations. You know, I
think fans are coming back next year thinking that this team,
if they get one superstar, is supposed to go to
the finals. And like I said, it takes time to
build chemistry and build a championship type team. So it
(59:32):
just depends on how patients this front office will be. UM,
if they're able to just focus on their plan and
not let the you know, the outside media dictate their
every move. Um, Like I said, there really at the
end of day, we're just gonna have to wait and see.
But it wouldn't be surprising that after two years or
after you know, after the bron has gone in the
third year, that you know, Vocal could be gone and
j K could be there or j kids could be
(59:53):
there after two years. You just never really know because
this front office is very unstable and very unproven. Matt
bar you want to get son a Doug Gotli show.
You're on Fox Sports Radio Portland have a Portland have
a shot. I don't think so. Um. I think the
Gold States kind of been their big brother the last
few years, you know, knocking them out of the playoffs,
and UM, a hell of a team, hell of a story.
(01:00:14):
I think they're very deep. I think it will be
a good series. But I just still you know, whether
they get Katie after game to game three, whatever situation. Um,
the Warriors are just the better team. But what worries
of me about the Warrior is their death. And what
one of portland strengths to me is um is one
of is their death. So it's going to be a
very interesting series. But I still got the Warriors. Let's
(01:00:37):
go out East. Uh. The Raptors survived the seventy six years.
Have you ever seen a game winning shot like that?
Hit the front rim twice, back room twice, the go
in incredible, incredible. Uh, it was a great game. Uh.
You know Kaui willed that team. He took the most
shots when in in I don't know, in history of games,
(01:00:57):
I read something I don't remember what that's what it was.
But he did was not going to let them lose,
you know, and un characteristically he took a high volume
of shot. But he just figured, hey, you know, everyone
else of Gunshire one of his games not going I'm
not gonna let my team lose. And I think there
was a tremendous performance by him. But the Bucks have
been waiting, you know, setting their home, waiting and watching.
So I think that that be honest and Kauai matchup.
(01:01:19):
That is going to be a very interesting matchup, no
question about it. What do you have view the seventy
six years? Um, to me, the seventy sixers and have
no one to blame but themselves for losing that game.
You know, they're very capable of going to the Eastern
Conference final. Um. I think the fact that Joel em
Beats sat out on the perimeter the majority of the game,
being the biggest, most talented player on the floor. Um.
(01:01:41):
You know, and sometimes when people you know, because I
tweeted it, and people, oh, you know that they're gonna
run a double team or do this sometimes in posting
up is not need for him to score. It's to
you know, get it in, get it out, get the
ball movement and put the defense and rotations. And they
didn't do that. You know, he was picking popping the
whole game and shooting perimeter jumpers. And to me, you're settling,
You're letting a decent off the hook. So I think,
(01:02:02):
you know, what is just this is a definitely a
learning experience like that Brown said, Um, nothing about to
take this on the chin, but who to say that,
you know, they could be right there, Um, you know,
with another year under their belt and experience. Uh, their
biggest warriors, I think is just and beats health. Is
he gonna be able to hold up? Is he gonna
(01:02:22):
be able to be consistent enough for them to continue
to challenge for the Eastern Crown? Matt Barnes joining us
in the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah,
it's it's really interesting. They had those three empty possessions
and you mentioned and being not in the post like,
I don't know. I think if there's a takeaway from
the playoffs, it's that you know, again, this is like
year two of it. We saw this in baseball with
(01:02:44):
you know, platoon players, Like I get it, the numbers
play out as the you know, over the life of
the regular season, but there is a value to the
low post. Like I think the Rockets had the right
plan two years ago with Joe Johnson, never used him.
I thought the idea of Karmarlo Anthony not not as
your main go to, but for five minutes a half,
let's just let Carmelo Anthony eat and the rest of
us can catch our breath, like a little change of pace.
(01:03:07):
And and then when you have him beat a guy
who can score on anybod. Now, maybe you can't score
on Gasol because Gasol is such an incredible defender. That's
why they wanted to get him outside. But at some
point you gotta try it. Right, No, he can score
on the he could go on anybody. Like I said,
it's just a will and the want, and he didn't
want to get down there, whether that was the game
plan or not. East. I mean, you know, half off
Market is a very talented defender, but there's no one
(01:03:28):
that can guard him beat on the block. And like
I said, they're most likely have to send somebody which
is gonna put you know, the you know Toronto and rotation,
and it's gonna get j J Reddick open shot. You
can get the bias Harris and Jimmy, Butther attacking the
basket been Sions attacking the basket. But it's something they
didn't even go to. So, like I said, it's no,
I don't think it was the fact that, you know,
they felt that he couldn't score on Mark. I just
don't know if you wanted to do down there. Yeah. Yeah,
(01:03:50):
it's a weird, weird, weird deal. Matt, great stuff, dude,
thanks so much for joining us. Appreciate. Um. I want
to ask you really quickly. You're doing this cannabis research
study with U c l A. It's and and by
the way, it's not just so everybody can walk around
smoking weed, which is already legal in southern California. It's
the combat opioid addiction among athletes. How important is this
(01:04:10):
do you believe for the future of athletics. I think
it's a huge epidemic, you know, not only in sports,
been on our country as a whole. And I think
the more that we continue to study this plane and understand,
you know, the benefits from this plant. Um, I think
there's a small part of this plant. That's for everybody
that and that's from children to grandparents. And I think
there's a misconception of every part of the plant gets
you high, and I think that's what scares them, you know,
(01:04:32):
conservative people away. But if you understand that, you know
there's plenty of benefits without actually getting the the psychological
high um, people would be more susceptible. So I think
that's what we want to do with continuing to to
study this plan. D a terminous university like u c
l A leading the charge and me helping and getting
other athletes to spread the word and tell their stories.
(01:04:52):
It's only a matter of time before professional sports realizes,
you know, what they have and how they utilize it.

(01:07:00):
So Frank Vogel's new head coach the Lakers, and I'm
not really sure it matters all that much, right, I'm
not saying that it doesn't matter, but it doesn't matter
that much. Okay, process wasn't us. This is a lot
like U c l A and their process in finding
mccronin who I think it's a damn good coach. Is
(01:07:21):
it a sexy higher like? No, But mccronickin, coach, you
win thirty games, since then you can win thirty games
U C l A. I mean, had he had it
not been for the Lebron James led Cleveland Cavaliers, Frank
Vogel would have coached in the NBA finals of the
Indiana Pacers. Like, either good enough coach, what's not good enough.
(01:07:42):
What's not good enough is the personnel and if that
doesn't get solved, it doesn't matter who the coaches like.
I thought Luke did a good job, but they didn't
have good enough shot makers and they didn't play good
enough defense, and they couldn't get it done. It's that
simple again, not the end all be all, But do
(01:08:04):
you mean to tell me that he couldn't he couldn't
get them to the NBA playoffs, that they're in capable
of getting to the NBA It all depends on his personnel.
I'm like, look, I know you're told that Jason Kidd
mentored Lonzo Ball last year. If mentoring him is placing
one phone call to help encourage him is mentoring, and
(01:08:26):
then okay, but Lonzo Ball hasn't been great because he
hasn't had time in an off season. He has never
been healthy for an off season, not once. Now who
have a chance to refine his game and improve his standing,
And it looks like there's a buy in as of
now from Lebron. They go out, they add another player.
(01:08:47):
If they fixed the roster, gotta have bet more shooting.
You gotta have more shooting, less clowns, and the young
guys gotta get better. If they do that, they'll make
the playoffs. If they don't, they won't. I mean they'll
probably make the playoffs regardless, but they got a chance
to go deep in the playoffs. And if you think
(01:09:08):
that coaching Lebron is so difficult, and I don't think
it's I don't think it's easy. But tyrond Loeu had
zero years of head coaching experience and took them the
three straight NBA finals. Eric Spoelstra had never been to it,
had even been an NBA finals, like, no, not before
Lebron got there. So here's the guy who has been there,
(01:09:30):
has seen that, has done that, and has some level
of respect around the NBA. And everybody thinks, good coach,
good guy. Know that nobody's gonna sit there and go
like he stinks. But to everybody freaking out about the problem.
The process was a mess, doesn't mean they got a
bad doesn't mean they got a bad coach. And even
(01:09:50):
if they did get a better coach, or a bigger
name coach or a sexier name coach, it wouldn't matter
if they don't fix the personnel. Yes, John Ramas, I
agree the person needs to be fixed. But does ty
To make it better to get that personal than maybe
Frank Vogel does. I don't think so. I don't because
the the operate, the the m O of Lebron is
(01:10:13):
he wants Lebron's guys, and Vogel is not a Lebron guys,
not an anti Lebron guy, He's just a guy. And
this helps the Lakers in their establish of establishment of
hey man, we just we just want a good coach,
which want good players to go around who we think
is the best players still in the game, and Lebron
James to make a playoff run. I actually think it helps.
(01:10:35):
I think it hurts in perception, it hurts in the
fact that they wanted Tylo. I'd also say this about Tyler.
How much money is Tyron lou making today? How much
is he making? I mean I'm sure he's getting something
from Cleveland or whatever, but how much is he actually
making a salary? Not a penny? So did he want
(01:10:56):
Jason Kidd as his assistant? Probably not. Did he want
Kurt rambas assistant, probably not. Did he want five years
instead of three? Probably did. But this is like when
you when you walk into a car dealership and you're like,
I'm not paying a penny over twenty dollars to that card, Like, sir,
the least we can give it to you for is
(01:11:19):
I'm not paying a penny over twenty. I know how
this works. You gotta hold back. You got this, You
got that dollars, like sir, the price that we're willing
to pay you get offer you is two You say no,
all right, you walk out that door, thinking they're gonna
(01:11:42):
chase you down. And he walked out, and the Lakers said, Okay,
we'll find somebody who will coach Lebron, who will take
a three year deal. Frank Vocalmate went from making zero
to six million, Tyron lew went for making zero to zero.
It's okay if you think you have leverage, but everyone
(01:12:03):
is replaceable. And I don't know how many wins they lost,
how much respect they lost, If there's any players they lost,
credibility they lost, We'll just have to wait and see.
And I'm not somebody I'm do. I think the Lakers
handled it well. No, but they also hold the cards
because it was their job to hire and they chose
to pass. Chris Carter thinks that the Philadelphia seventies six

we treat you like you treat you. Here's Chris Carter
discussing who the Sixers missed yesterday. They need a point
guard and that's why you can't run your offense. I
don't care what the coach says. I don't care what
Ben Simmons says. I get so sick and people say,
oh man, here's a point guard. Okay, why can't you
run your offense at the end of the game Because
(01:13:52):
he doesn't have the intangibles. Just because the guy can
dribble does not make him a point guard. You need
someone to be able to set it up. And like
I said last week, let's not forget Marquelle Folks not
being on this team. It showed again because the process
wasn't about just those two players. There was another player
(01:14:13):
involved that was supposed to be part of that process,
and he is a pure point guard. Now he is
going through He went through a whole bunch of things
and everything off the court. But that's where they have
a hole in the roster. So for me, what do
they need to do, Like they need to be able
to feel that void. They need to be able to
get a point guard. Now. I do believe that Ben
(01:14:34):
Simmons is a special talent, but when you get in
games like this, and I'm gonna say it again, it
becomes important to be able to shoot the basketball outside
of the restricted area. The biggest game of his career,
he shoots the ball five times. He's an All Star. Well,
(01:14:55):
the playoffs from regular season are different, and I think
what Chris Carter meant was the idea of Marquelle Folts
is what they wanted because the player Marquelle Folts couldn't
shoot a lick either. He's not really even in the
NBA right now. And I get what he's saying. Um, Look,
I I understand that we operate under this thought that
(01:15:15):
they need a point guard. And he's not wrong to
have a dynamic. They just need guards. There are no
guards on that team. You just you don't have combo guards.
Guards ball handlers like, that's not Jimmy Butler's like a wing.
J j Reddick's a shooter. Now when when they talked
(01:15:36):
about the process, it actually didn't have anything to do
with any one guy or any three guys. The process
was like, we want to go way back. It was
the idea of losing games, playing younger players, trying to
figure out which of these guys could stick for when
they got better, you know, shedding bad contracts and at
(01:15:58):
the right moment so that they then loading up on
draft picks and playing the numbers game. And part of
the part of the process within the draft is understanding
that it's not it is absolutely not a lock I'd
taken the number one pick. Doesn't always work out. They
couldn't have known that Mark l Foltz would go as
wayward as he did. On the other hand, it's not
(01:16:20):
out of the realm of likelihood that if you draft
ten guys in the lottery five don't plan it pan
out nearly as well as you'd like. That's the process.
And what do they need. I think they need more
of more guards. I think you need an off the
bench finishing guard. The problem is that you still Ben
(01:16:40):
Simmons is gonna need to handle the ball and gonna
need to be a point forward, if you will, and
he needs developers three point shot. But this idea that
he's absolutely positively not a point guard, like, look, you
just you need ball. You need multiple ball handlers, multiple
attack guys, and they don't really have it. All that said,
(01:17:01):
they're one bad possession. They actually had three consecutive bad
possessions away from playing for the Eastern Conference championship. They're
not that far off, and they tried to skip a
couple of steps this year and go for it because
they saw it as an opportunity and that's not crazy.
So I'm gonna disagree with Chris on a couple of
different things. Even though I understand when he says Marquelle Folds,
(01:17:22):
he doesn't mean Marquel Folds today. He means the idea
of Mark el Foltz, the Gotlim Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Yes, rhyme music. So what is it that
they have to get through to Ben Simmons to get
him to be more involved Because the Game six that
(01:17:43):
they won, he took thirteen shots and was much more
aggressive at trying to drive at the basket and have
an impact. I mean there there are different games, Like
you just look at the Toronto series. He shot eight times,
then he shot six times, thirteen times, ten times, five times,
thirteen times and five times. Like if you're his coach
(01:18:03):
or his teammate or the general manager or the owner,
what like, what do you have to do to sit
him down and be like, dude, we need you involved.
It kind of just seems like he tries to stay
involved without taking shots, but it seems like that's almost
impossible in today's NBA. If you're going to be the
point guard of a team that has hopes to win
an NBA title, um, I would generally say, yes, you're right, like,
(01:18:30):
you have to be more aggressive, you have to be
more involved. He hadn't played like these are the only
games that they've ever played in that matter. It's just
different and the pressure is different, the adjustments are different,
the physicality is different. And when you're Ben Simmons, you're
six ten, you've always been bigger and stronger than everybody else.
You can always get by guys. I mean, as much
(01:18:52):
as we're sitting there going like looking at how much
more developed honest is like, I mean more many more
years the honest has been doing it right, So he's
been doing it more than twice as long in the NBA,
and I would expect that to be somewhere uh parallel
to the development you'll see in Ben Simmons. Like I
just I'm not selling off a guy who's struggling in
(01:19:14):
the playoffs in his second year playing in the NBA,
third year overall as a pro. Just not. I think
that's dumb to do. I think that's shortsighted. How many
times have we seen guys you're like, well, they used
to yeah, because they were twenty two and they didn't
know anything. He didn't play in the n c A
Toterma in college. He's never played in important games. He
didn't play in the Olympics with the Australian national team.
These are the first important games he's played it. So
(01:19:35):
I'm not giving him a pass. I'm saying he failed.
But this is not the final exam. That's the big thing.
It's not the final exam. You know, the regular season
is more coursework, and he's kept up with it. You
know that this is a big test, but it's not
(01:19:55):
the end all, be all. This is not the end
of career exam. Um that the end of your exam.
That determines whether or not you're a success or a failure.
Sometimes you also have to feel the game. They used
him in the post sum They used Jimmy Butler as
the backup point guard and played in point some with him.
They played a bunch through um through Joel Embiid as
(01:20:18):
a ball handler to take Marcus all away from the basket.
They did a lot of different things. But the fundamental
flaw to this team, by my estimation, is they don't
have enough ball handlers. They just don't. I mean honestly,
that's you know, Golden State struggles is that when they
don't have Kevin Duranton or Steph Curry in because Clay
(01:20:39):
is not a ball handler. But what they are able
to get away with this because Igodal is a good
pass or Sean Livingston. People forget Sean Levingstone was a
point guard coming up. Uh Draymond Green is like a
point power forward. They just have more ball handlers, more
good pastors, more shot creators, and that's not what the
seventy sixers have. And that ultimately got exposed, but it
(01:21:00):
didn't get exposed badly. It wasn't like they got embarrassed.
It was a struggle. They were on the road, they
had to help bad possessions and they lost on a
crazy last second shot. But I also think you have
to understand this is what we have. How do we
work work forward? We can't. We don't want to tear
(01:21:20):
it down and start over because we're really, really, really
really close, And you would think the Celtics may have
to reconfigure themselves. And that's one of the other top
four teams. Nest Uh. Sometimes we care about things that
don't actually matter, which is why we should love Kauahi Leonard.
Don't believe me, I'll prove it to you next. Fox

What do you actually care about? It's an honest question,
(01:22:05):
like what do you actually care about? In the makeup
of a person? And I'm I'm big on this, Like
do you care about their political leanings? Sometimes the political
leanings tell you more about the core of a person. Sometimes,
do you care about uh, they're married, not married, their
religious affiliation. Do you care about these things? Because you know,
(01:22:32):
Cowherd has something where he always says, you know, how
do you treat people? How do you treat animals? How
do you treat children? That's the makeup of who you are.
All the rest of the stuff doesn't really matter. Like,
I don't care what kind of music you listen to.
I don't want you to come in my car, and
I always want to listen to your music or complain
about my music, But I don't really care. Everybody kind
(01:22:54):
of has their quirks, right, as long as your quirks
don't somehow um negate my quirks negatively, I don't really care.
There's certain core things that we're supposed to care about,
and I think Kawai Leonard is one of those guys,
(01:23:18):
and we see it in life and we see it
in sports where you're like, yeah, that's that's really I mean, honestly,
probably fifty of Barack Obama's politics I was a huge
fan of it wasn't but and maybe this is just
(01:23:38):
the image, and maybe I bought in the image, but
I thought he seemed like a decent of dude. I
did like to be like basketball and legitimately liked basketball,
right I I I thought, you know, I felt for
a guy who is a man, and then he's got
a wife who's powerful and brilliant, and then two daughters.
(01:24:01):
Right like, no dude in the house. They're just parts
of were like you like, Yeah, I don't really like
that at all, But I like the core of what
the guys about, right, I like the core of what
he's about. It's about the right things. Um. And I
(01:24:21):
can think of actresses. I can think of musicians where
I sit there and go like, yeah, I don't like
that they do this or that they try and reinvent themselves,
but I like the core of who they are. I
have friends that way. Oh what is that car? Whether
(01:24:41):
why is he still wearing affliction shirts? Like it's a
good dude. If I need him, he's there. If I
showed up at a restaurant forgot my wallet, he picked
up the tab. If my kid was sick and I
couldn't get it from school, I'd have this woman or
this guy go and get him. Right. If I'm dying

of thirst, they bring me water, even if it was
their own, Like those are the people are my friends,
what do we want from a basketball player? Right? Do
we want the swag? Do you want the walk from
the car to the locker room with style? Do we
want the stats? Do you want the regular season m
(01:25:26):
v ps? Do we want the fancy dunks or the
deep threes or the celebration with an arrow afterwards or
I don't know, everybody's got a different celebration now these days.
Or do we want somebody who plays offense, somebody plays defense,
somebody who rebounds, somebody who improves every year, somebody who's
(01:25:47):
willing to carry their team and can actually carry their team,
and someone who speaks less maybe more than too much.
But when ask your question, it's here's it isn't that who?
Quiet Leonard is right? Like he is not all show,
(01:26:09):
but it's weird. So many basketball fans are like, well,
I don't like how NBA guys are, so what I
Quiet letter like, Wow, you know he's just boring. And
he he forced his way out of San Antonio, like
they said he wasn't hurt, and he thought he was hurt.
They called him a faker, a right, like of all
(01:26:30):
the things you don't want to be called. You don't
want to be called a liar. And that's what a
faker is, especially when you're a pro athlete. You know,
and hey, my my leg hurts. No it doesn't know
it just doesn't feel right. No it doesn't. You're hurt,
not injured. No I'm injured. Like I don't know what's
(01:26:53):
going on in neither to you. I just know he
didn't feel right. And oh yeah, by the way, when
he does feel right, he dropped forty one the East
in conference semifinals Game seven to hit the game winner,
like we just we we we. It feels like we
want things of athy, want them to be bigger than
the game. Like what do they don't want to be
(01:27:13):
your basketball player? Do your job and you go home,
and then you're a basketball player and you do your
job and you go home. Why is there everything be
anything bigger, anything more profound. Why doesn't need his own
media company? He doesn't need his own I g to like,
(01:27:35):
you know Ben Simmons, who I like, but like I
follow Ben Simmons on I G. Then every day there's
a photo of him dressed something interesting, like guy's a
good dresser, hopping out of a nice car, walking into work.
That doesn't give him a jump shot. I don't I
actually don't care. I don't care if you wear slides
(01:27:59):
to a game, or you wear your sneakers and you
already lay st up. I don't care if you wear
Rex Specs okay, or you know you go with old
school glasses. I don't care if you have a ponytail,
or if you wear one of those horrible Lebron hide
your hairline headbands, or you just you shave your head
ball don't care. Shouldn't it be about do you play
(01:28:21):
both ends? Do you help your team win? Do you compete?
Are you fearless? Are you willing to take? Can you
make the big shot? Isn't that what Andrew luck? Is?
In't that what Mike Trout is? I saw this article
last week about Mike Trout and there's like some seven
year old kid who spent the day with before the
(01:28:41):
game and about how chiroic he was. Like, actually, Mike,
trust have been doing that for a long time. My
kids met him like four years ago. Couldn't have been nicer.
You can shadow around and he'll talk to you and
then he gets ready to play. All right, I gotta
go play. Then he goes in place. It competes really hard,
and for some people that's not enough. But I don't know.
(01:29:04):
It seems to be working for Kawhi Leonard here's quiet.
Leonard actually does speak and speaks English perfectly. After the game,
I'm a guy to act like I've been there before,
so probably last time you've probably see me scream. It's
like when we won. So whenever it's like a moment
where I haven't really experienced, I probably try to give
some emotion, show some emotion and let it, let it
(01:29:26):
just come out. So you know, tonight was one of
those nights. I've never been in that situation before. And
like you said, um, it's the first shot somebody hit
a gay winner and then in game seven, so I'll
just showed emotion. It almost like he's apologizing for show.
Let me explain why I showed emotion, Like, no, do
(01:29:47):
we actually get let me explain here? Okay, Normally I
like to be the guy who act like I did
it before, but I've never actually done it before. No
one's actually done it before, so I wanted to. So
I I got excited and it almost felt like there
was gonna be a all by. I apologize for getting
excited over hitting the game winning shot against the Philadelphia's
seventies six years and you know, reading us of playoff
(01:30:09):
curses of the past, But is then what we ask
of guys? Some sometimes we want so much there would
be some other story like now, well, he wants to
play in l A. Like, yeah, he's from l A.
He likes warm weather. He wants to play Los Angeles,
he's from there. That's what he first comfortable. But the meantime,
(01:30:30):
like he's gonna play for the Toronto Raptors until his
contract expires, and he's gonna compete, and he's gonna celebrate
only when he has when he's accomplished something he hasn't
accomplished before, like he did when he won an NBA
Finals m v P and he did when he hit
a game a bucket in game seven to win the game.
(01:30:51):
I don't know. I don't know if he's the star
that America wants, but he might be the star America needs.
Go out there and do your job. That's so Kahi
Leonard does. Doug Gotla show rolls on on Fox Sports

Allip Show rolls on Fox Sports Radio. Hey, this isn't
just a quick dodger question to you, Ramos Um, how
would you characterize Cody Bellinger's season last year? Uh? I
(01:32:23):
would say a disappointment from the previous year. Disappointment, right,
that that's fair music. Would you would you concur with that? Like, uh, correct,
disappointment considering his outstanding rookie season. Okay, the Dodgers, by
the way, one yesterday six nothing. They one hit, the
Nationals one one stinking hit a bunch of lollygaggers. And
(01:32:46):
uh the Nationals, by the way, um, they are sixteen
and twenty four. Yikes, so they're doing pretty well for themselves. Yeah,
Cody Bellinger had a couple of more hits, three more.
He's hitting four oh seven on the season, four oh
seven and average is not even necessarily He's on BaseT
(01:33:08):
pent of the time. He's got fourteen home runs already
this season. Hadn't hit a home run in a while.
Somehow that's supposed to be a big thing when you've
hit fourteen so far in this young year. But weren't
they platooning him last year? Wasn't that a big part
of why he felt like he wasn't he wasn't getting
enough a B s. I'm trying to think if they
(01:33:29):
were platooning him because of his struggles, or he was
struggling because they were platooning him. I know pre you know,
and the monthly from last year. So yeah, I think
they were. I think they were. He was having some
trouble hit left handed pitchers, and so I do think
that being in the lineup every day definitely helps you.
(01:33:49):
I think I think so now analytics would tell you
not as much this year. Um this year, it should
be pointed out that he's he's hitting four forty seven
against righties, he's got ten of his home runs, but
he's hitting three thirty three against lefties. So he is
getting opportunities more than anything when you're at the dish
every day, just volume of times in which you see it.
(01:34:12):
I I used that as as it's a lot like
analytics and basketball, where so often times they tell us
that like, look, the computer tells us you should only
be taking layups and threes getting to the free throw line, alright,
But but sometimes it's about like I think the Rockets,
(01:34:33):
I think when they remember they got Joe Johnson last year,
they didn't play him, and they had Carmelo this year
and they cut him. I think the the idea was, Hey,
at some point in time, we're gonna need somebody just
get us a bucket in the post and let everybody
else take a breath and relax. And they never did that.
The Warriors have that when they have Kevin Durant. Now
they didn't have it obviously in Game seven. On on Friday,
(01:34:54):
Jim Jackson joins us on the Doug Gottlib Show on
Fox Sports Radio. I'm all four analytics, but but I
also like kind of a hybrid approach where you use
it some and you still value Hey, get a guy
a ball in his spot where he feels super comfortable
and the rest of the team can relax. Isn't that
kind of what the playoffs have told us? Well, I
(01:35:14):
mean yeah, because if you think about with the Portland's game,
it was c J McCallum. Down the stretch of the game,
they weren't three point shots, Doug, as you as you know,
he got to a spot on the court where those
to the free throw line extended to the free throw
line where he got to the basket. And while the
other team missed by gold, stay you miss. Okay, we
(01:35:34):
may not get it three, but we'll get six eight
points of two point baskets. And and that's the difference.
And that's how you win basketball games in the Cup,
you know, fourth quarter when the defense is tight and
you know, the offense needs to figure out ways to
manufacture some easy baskets. Doug Ot Live Show with Jim Jackson,
(01:35:57):
Jim Jackson's young son in the background, also adding his
own commentary to this. Is he agreeing with you or
disagreeing with you? Oh, he's not. He's in the back
right now, like he's on his own thing right now
on the he's on the eye, nanny. Um, okay, have
you ever seen a ball hit the front rim twice,
back room twice and then go in? Yeah, but not
(01:36:20):
in that situation and that degree of difficulty. Um, think
about that shot now, as a right handed player going
to your right, you have to basically turn and square
your whole body and shoulders to get it, especially at
that angle in the corner. It's much easier going to
his left to shoot that to the degree of difficulty
(01:36:41):
was just and at the angle when we were watching
the game, I said, there's no way there's going in,
you know, And and it and it went in, But
I mean this, it capped off. I think what what
was a great series for the Toronto, tough one for Philly,
but never seen it like that in a clutch situation,
What do you think happens in Piladelphia or what should
happen in Philadelphia? They gotta well, they gotta evaluate a
(01:37:04):
couple of things. One, I think you need to demand
with Joel Embi that he comes in better shape from
the beginning of the season. I think he's carrying a
little bit too much weight. Hint. It adds to some injuries.
His eating habits have to change because he's he's so
dominant when he's in there. I don't think he's completely
committed to being in the best shape. When he can
do that, I think he's just it takes his game
(01:37:26):
to another level. You gotta figure out what you want
to do with Ben Simmons and what I mean by
that in late game situations, he clugged up the lane
because they put him on the post a lot. You know,
they took the ball out of his hands, which partly
was due to the fact that he wasn't producing from
the outside. And Doug, you what I tell people all
the time is you know they're comparing to Magic Johnson,
(01:37:46):
but magic. Johnson played point guard in high school, he
played it in college, so he was natural at that position.
Then it's not a natural point guard and that comes
out into play, especially in playoff situation. You gotta figure
out what you're doing if you run to play Jimmy Butler.
But also you can't afford I don't think to Louis
Tobias Harris or j J. Ready can't pay j J
(01:38:07):
like that. But so they have some critical decisions they
gotta make this off season. Doug Gotli show on Fox
Sports Trader. That's Jimmy Jackson who's joining us. All right,
let's get to the west. Um, I mean we saw
an absolute virtuoso by staff down the stretch of course
game six, Clay showed up. What took me was afterwards,
to a man, they were all like, that was great,
(01:38:29):
but we need k D back. Was this recruiting or
do you think that's just the makeup of those guys
that they truly in fact respect Kevin Durant and want
him back because so many other people like, well this
just shows how much better, how good they are without
Kevin Durant. Why do you think they reacted the way
they did because there's a genuine respect for what Katie
(01:38:50):
brings to the table. And keep in mind, Dark this
is one game. There's a lot different when you got
to play a seven game series without Kevin Durant. So
they put makes me played the game in a half
because when Katie went out, now you come back. But
that stresses the bench out a lot more on what
you can and can't do your rotations if you don't
(01:39:10):
have Kevin Durant. He's an excellent rebounder, his defense has improved,
he can make plays to his teammates, and of course
he can score. So I mean, let's be honest. I mean,
you're gonna need Kevin Durant. I think maybe not so
much against Portland's but if you end up playing against Milwaukee, well,
I think could could beat Toronto. You're definitely gonna need
(01:39:31):
Kevin Durant because Milwaukee has home court event okay, and
you need somebody that can go get baskets just like that.
In such situation, Uh, what do you do with your
Houston bro? I mean, I think they gotta find the balance,
man of you talked about it, Doug about the analytics
part of it. They built their teams so much to
(01:39:54):
go out and defeat Golden State from a physical perspective,
But what they didn't improve was the mental part. Dug.
I mean, I played for Mike D'Antoni. I love him
to death, but how do you not make the adjustments
during it? I always said that I thought that even
with Kevin Duran out that Golden Stable winning seven back
at home, and the X factor was that Clay and
Steph would figure it out that you have to guard
(01:40:15):
them differently. But key is who was on the bench,
who was in the pilot seat, and that's Steve Kurt.
Steve Kerr made the adjustment with that one four pick
and roll with Steph and Draymond. They cleared out the
strong side corner and they allowed Draymond to make plays.
You had a you know, three on two on the backside.
(01:40:35):
Mike D'Antoni and Houston never made the adjustment. Okay after
the first time, Okay, second time, third time, you gotta
make an adjustment, free, rotate, do something. That's the difference
in with Houston. Now you've tried everything in regards to
building the team, you gotta figure out how you want
to play. Chris Paul's will be a year older Okay,
can you win with James Harden dominating the ball works
(01:40:59):
in the regular season but not in the postseason to
ultimately get to a championship game. Um, I I agree
with you in terms of Now, in fairness, they did
something different every time down like right, one time they
came off and faked the screen. He lays it in.
One time he throws it back, it's a handoff, hits
the three. One time he comes off and uh goes
back the other way and hits the crazy three. Another
(01:41:21):
time he hits Draymond, and he passed it to Iguadala
to Clay time like it wasn't like it was was
the same. It was the same set, but they used
every different option from it. Well, but here's the thing though,
because they jumped Draymond. I mean they jumped Clay each time. Okay,
that one time with Chris Paul turned his head, it's
because he jumped out. Okay, steph went away from it.
(01:41:44):
But also because the post player kind of stepped out,
it gave enough room. So yeah, there were different options
off of it. But how Houston chose to guard it
is what I'm talking about. You have to change that
look up a little bit. Even if you come back
to it, you have to change it up to make
the offense. I'm comfortable. If not, Steph and Draymond knew
(01:42:05):
exactly what and what they want to do. You played
enough to know with a teammate you can give a
little signal, little eye contact. Okay, instead of me coming off,
I'm gonna go to I'm a fade to the corner
this time, said the stream. And now you slip early.
You know, if you can communicate without really saying it,
And that's what I'm saying. They were so comfortable that
they can pretty much do what they wanted on that
(01:42:26):
side of the quarter on that play. Katie is not
gonna play Game one. Does Portland? Does Portland have enough
to win this series? I don't know if they have
enough shot makers? Um, I mean, I love I mean
c J. Mcconum and Damon are just bro I mean
and and I love their business approach to the playoffs
this year that you know, the demeanor after what happened
(01:42:49):
last year, I've grown to really respect more and more
of those guys. You can Evan Turner step up, can heartless,
be a guy you can against Golden State. You can
count over six game seven games. Um, that's the question
with this Portland's team. And plus actually it works better
for Golden State because Portland wants to get up and
down the court more so than less than what Denver
(01:43:11):
want to do have court wise, So I think it
plays into the mindset in the game of what um
Golden State wants to do. But it could be easily
I mean a four two series depending on what happens
with Katie, Milwaukee and Toronto. Obviously everyone's gonna point out
Kauai versus k D versus versus Janice. But as we've seen,
(01:43:31):
you know, usually stars end up crossing each other out.
Who then becomes the X factors well for both teams.
You know Keith Middleton, Well, Middleton has always been you know,
it's the second best player there production wise for Milwaukee.
And then you know Pascal Siakam, he he hasn't He
didn't play well the last series. Can he kind of
(01:43:53):
go back to what we saw that first season, I
mean the first playoff series and also what we saw
during the course of the year. Because you're right, Doug,
I mean, your honest is gonna get hit, Kauai is
gonna get hit. Who else is gonna be able. I
think Eric Bletsoe is gonna be a key factor. I mean,
does it is it now for Kyle Lawry and the
champion in the in the Eastern Conference finals to be
(01:44:14):
more consistent and what he does, it's always those role players.
I think Malcolm Brogden coming back defensively, offensively, leadership, what
he does. Those are the guys I think that are
gonna play a key role. And as you know, Duck
in Toronto muster up enough of the savvy to go
into Milwaukee and get a game. It's gonna be the key. Ye.
(01:44:37):
What do you think of what the Lakers have done
with Frank Vogel. Here here's my thing, Doug. I didn't
like what they did to ty Lope. I offered him
a three year deal, which is the last three years
of the Bronze tenure. Of course, unless he choose to
do something else. I didn't like how they've had to
dictate who was going to be on the coaching staff. Okay,
but you have said you come back and you give
(01:45:00):
Ogal this now. I just I'm trying to get my
arms wrapped around what direction the Lakers want to go,
and it's been off chilter ever since, you know, Dr
Jerry Buss passed away. Everything they've done, it seemed to
go opposite of what he put in place for that frandchild.
It's almost like, you know, the rich kid the father.
(01:45:22):
I want to do something totally different and that's what
we see it. And as a result, the Lakers have
not been you know, formidable powerhouse that we saw in
the past. Man, I'm a little confused with the power struggle,
but a lot of it with Plinka is it's the
power struggle within it, man, you know, and Pelinka has
(01:45:42):
his own issues from being a former agent that a
lot of people didn't really have a good feel for.
Now he's the general manager, which plays a role as well.
Does it ultimately work anyway, Doug, I would love to
say it. You know, you're Laker Land. It's a lot
easier to turn the Lakers around than it is UM.
You know, some other teams that are may have a
(01:46:05):
little discomfort going on. UM, but its leadership, as you know,
is in consistent leadership, the consistent word, the consistent message.
When you don't have that talent is one thing, but
the trickle down effect of your management upstairs is not
as joined in and not as concise and consistent is
(01:46:26):
gonna end up affecting your product. And that's what we're
seeing with the Lakers. Okay, uh, John bee Line leaves
Michigan to coach in the NBA. He nearly left Michigan
last year. Now he does it. You obviously played in
the Big Ten, cover b Line a bunch covering the
Big Ten. Everybody raised about him as a human being
and as a basketball coach, But how does it work
(01:46:48):
in the NBA. Well, and you know, in college, you're
the parental figure. You can basically run and control what
you want with these young men. In college, Okay, you're
the first and last word. If something happens, the college
coaches can get rid of you. They can do. That's
not what happens in the league. And I'm just trying
to figure out the direction. And you know, the whole
(01:47:11):
thing about Cleveland Cavs is like, you want to estabage
the culture, a new culture. Okay. I tend to think
that could be done with a younger coach that understands
the culture of the guys there. Not that be Line doesn't.
I think it's a tough ask at sixty six years
old as your first NBA job to come in. But
(01:47:31):
what they love about be Line was his discipline, his
ability to communicate with young men, his ability to um,
I think, improve upon the mental aspects of the game.
But again, these are eight olds. When you come into college,
it's a lot different when you come into the pro.
So it's interesting to me. I love John Beiline. I
(01:47:52):
just don't know if that was the right move for
the future, is it? You know, I just don't know. Yeah,
it's a it's a weird one. It's a really really
weird What did you what when you first saw what
did you think? I didn't the I I thought, honestly,
I thought the Lakers would consider Chewski is oh self
(01:48:13):
be Line right. The the only part, the part about
the bee Line thing that I do like, uh, play wise,
he's always he's always been a guy that's that's opened
up the floor and that's obviously the way of the
future in the NBA. His from Kevin Pittsnogle on down. He's,
you know, Moe Wagner letting his big guys shoot and
creating mismatches with his offense. And and he has changed
(01:48:35):
some recently as well. He hasn't. He's gone away from
his his old structure. But the other part is, yes,
he's a disciplined guy, but he also he he doesn't
brow beat you, right, Like the reason the classic college
coach wouldn't work was they would m f you up
and down and they would, you know, knock you down
then build you back up. That's not He's discipline oriented,
but he's not the classic disciplinarian that has to curse
(01:48:58):
you and make you feel lower than human being. And
it is a young team, but it's definitely an odd high.
It's not one that I thought I saw coming with
the Cleveland Cavaliers. Well, what just goes back to relationships too, right,
I mean, I mean his relationships with the front office
allowed him to be able to take a look at it.
And you can't be mad at John being I look
sixty six years old. He's pretty much done everything at
(01:49:20):
Michigan except win a championship. This is a chance for
him the backside of his career to maybe do something
he always wanted to do, which is so has having
to range seriously about, you know, coaching in the NBA
and what does what does he have to loose if
they approached him about it. What does John had to
loose get a bigger payday? Okay, we all know the
(01:49:42):
NBA things in turn, you know next year, but he
said he could always go back to college if he
wants to. So I mean for him, it's a great
lateral move. I'm just thinking for the calves and what
they're trying to do doesn't make sense right now. Yeah,
we will definitely definitely see great stuff. Man, really appreciated.
(01:50:03):
Enjoy the playoffs and you're little man, thanks for joining us.
Than appreciated brother Al Yes, Jim Jackson, let's get you
to Dan Fire find out what else is going on
to But he got a bunch of stuff, Doug including
in Florida, where a judge there is granted granted Robert
Kraft's motion to suppress video evidence from his prostitution case.
Of course, that's the video that was taken inside the
massage parlor. The judge ruled that the techniques used to
(01:50:26):
get the video did not satisfy constitutional requirements, so they
would not be allowed in the case. The state is
expected to appeal that decision. A couple of other doubts
from the NFL. The chief's backup quarterback e J. Manuel,
retiring from football, was once the first round draft pick
of the Buffalo Bills. Former Jets and Giants quarterback Geno
Smith was a second round pick. Is expected to sound

compete against Paxton Lynch to be the backup to Russell
Wilson and former Chief Stead coach Gunther Cunningham passed away
today at the age of seventy two after a brief illness.
P J Championship is this week at Bethpage Black. Justin
Thomas won't be there, though the champion head to withdraw
today because of a risk injury night offer the NBA Playoffs,
(01:51:11):
they will begin tomorrow in the Western Conference Finals Game
one in Oakland. Warriors home to the Blazers. Golden State
won't have Kevin Durant. He's out with a string cap,
and he's also likely to miss Thursday's game two, according
to ESPN, as he'll be reevaluated on Wednesday. Cleveland Cavaliers
if fired Michigan coach John bee Line to be the
team's next head coach. He gets a five year contract
(01:51:31):
to lead Michigan after twelve years, and Andy slader of
six forty. The hurricane in West bomb Beach, Florida reports
that Suns forward Josh Jackson was arrested at a music

enter a VP area without the proper credentials and then
attempted to flee police. We'll be back to the Doug

that news that Bob Krafts video will be suppressed, right? Well?
(01:52:19):
What was it? The techniques that were required to acquire it? Yes, yes,
that I think techniques and prostitution craft. I do not
want to see the techniques of prostitution there. Yeah, the
the techniques of the FBI that did not follow protocol
apparently according to the judge, oh not fall protocol. Huh.
(01:52:41):
I don't even want to know what that means, like,
I know what it could mean, but I don't want
to know what that that being. Well, basically, they just
illegally filmed him. They didn't set up their search warrant
correctly and didn't process it that way illegal search warrant.
Like it, I like, it makes me feel like Magnum
p I or one of those shows. Anyway, Um, Roger
Goodell is going to appeal that just kidding things. I
(01:53:06):
don't want to see, right, your parents and anyone like
you don't want to see your parents, right, There's not
an amount of money that you would not pay to
not see your parents and a video, right, We're all
correct here. You just think about it and he's like,
oh oh yuck. And then you know, now you're talking
(01:53:28):
about Bob, Like I just I don't dig those type
of videos anyway, let alone old men in those videos.
I don't know. We thought that was a good idea
to push for that, to push for that, Joe Flacco
has exactly zero interest in being a mentor. Don't believe me,
(01:53:50):
I'll explain next. Be sure to catch live editions of

can stand a lot, one exception being an airborne car.
I've seen it covered it. Dr Farmers, we are farmers
underwritten my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance Exchange and affiliates products

Marcus Thompson be our guest. He's written Steph Curry's book
(01:54:35):
or a Steph Curry book, and he covers the Warriors
for the Athletics. So we'll get to Marcus Thompson who's
also now he's writing Kevin Durant book, and he's from Oakland,
where you know you're gonna get by the end of
this series. If you don't know that Damian Lillard is
from Oakland. I swear to God that we had this
thing with my My My House where we've watched two
(01:54:56):
or three Trailblazers games, and my kids still don't think
it's Seth Curry is Steph Curry's brother. They're like, no,
that's a that's a TV commercial, that's a he's no,
that was the name, that's his insurance agent. I was like, no,
Seth Curry is Steph Curry's brother. No, he's not. Yes
he is. Look it up and they still I've looked
(01:55:18):
it up, They've wikipediad. They still don't believe it to
be true. Do they know that Ryan Fitzpatrick went to Harvard?
I'm not sure. They definitely don't know that Jerome Bettis
is from Detroit. What about that Clayton Kershaw and Matt
Stafford played baseball together going up. Yes, yes, and Clay
Thompson and uh Kevin love baseball together in Lake Oswego.
(01:55:42):
They got swet go. Let's get to Dan Byron, press
the press, Kevin Durance no go for Game one on
Tuesday night against those Blazers out by the way, you
could take tonight off a little. We didn't have hoops
on Saturday, no hoops to right, but then constant hoops
for the next week or so, depending on long these
(01:56:04):
conference finals. Go it all starts tomorrow in the West,
but nope, Coverent Durant for Golden State against Portland because
of that strain calf. Your level of confidence in your Bucca,
in your bucks high, like high with the brooms high.
I think they're going to the Eastern Conference Finals. There's
no way they're gonna. I don't think there's any way
(01:56:26):
they'd lose the series. And one man is not going
to beat that team. And that's what Toronto has. Yeah,
they got there. You go yeah. Uh has anyone ever
complained as much as a Bacca? I feel like a
Bacca has reached He has reached San Antonio. He was good,
(01:56:48):
but he has reached San Antonio Spurs level of complainthood.
Like literally everything he looks and he's just like, what, yeah,
I see you're Abacca and raise you at Chris Paul.
Do you know that Abaka has a bodyguard? Did you
hear about this? Why would Searge Ibaka a body He's
a search protector? Uh? Come on, come on? Oh what
(01:57:12):
that was to come on? Searge protector? Did you get
that from your boys back home in Wisconsin? I thought
that was search protector? Yeah? Yeah, what do you think
it's a good one. That's a good one. Buy Are
you should use that. Ryan Music is like, what's a
search protector? That's totally lost. You don't know what the
search pecture is. Nope, if you would have thought that
(01:57:34):
was really funny, it's a you put it on a
plug so that you don't get a search, so that
you in certain parts of the country, if you have
lightning strikes you can get a surge, or you know,
if you just have bad wiring whenever you get a search,
and technically you could blo out your TV, could blow
out your computer or anything else. So you put a
search tecure strip of outlet. That's a that's a strip,
(01:57:56):
that's a search strip. But but anyway, it is a
search as the search protector. So it's a play on words.
That's what he's done. Hi, Dan Buyer, Ladies and Jellin,
Joel and Vidkob the reports of Brett Brown losing his
job bs. He actually used the full word, I'll use
the abbreviation. Well, what what I would like Joel and
me to say is, hey, look, if he loses his job,
(01:58:18):
it's my fault because I wasn't in shape to win.
It's too tired to win. I think that was a
big part of the Nuggets. And I know that yo
Kihold he had he made both free those, it would
have brought them within one. But Yo Kich was too
tired to win and Bead was too tired to win.
And some of that is on their coaches, but a
lot of that's on them, like they have to do
the work in the off season, throughout the season, maintain
(01:58:41):
elite physical conditioning. Because if I see a big guy
play forty minutes in the end an NBA game, and
I'm gonna posting teams coach, I'm gonna say, we're gonna
put him in a hundred ball screens, hundred ball screens.
We're gonna make him, We're gonna use and abuse him
so that by the end of the game he's too
tired to win. And that's what happened in both of
those games. Denver Brocco's quarterback Joe Flacco spoke with reporters
(01:59:05):
today and the topic of conversation came up about developing
rookie quarterback Drew Lock. Here was Flaccoes response, I got
so many things to worry about. I'm trying to go
out there and play good football. I'm trying to go
out there and play the best football in my life.
As far as the time constraint and all that stuff,
you know, I'm not worried about developing guys or any
of that. You know, that is what it is. And
(01:59:26):
like I said, I hope he does develop, but I
don't look at that as my job. My job is
to go win football games for this football team. Joe Flacco,
it sounds like you really enjoyed the Lamar Jackson experienced
last year. Uh. In fairness to Flacco, he was he
was good to Lamar when Lamar Uh, you know, when
Lamar got booed in the in the playoff game, he
(01:59:48):
was good to him. And I think what he's saying
is accurate. I just don't think it's the way in
which he needs to say. Look, I'll do whatever it
takes to to help this organization. They want to develop Drew.
But when I'm I'm done here in the meantime, I'm
gonna try and win games. But you know, there's a
certain tourist defensiveness to him, which he hasn't really enjoyed
(02:00:09):
this portion of his career. New Toronto Blue Jays pitcher
Edwin Jackson is on the verge of setting an MLB record.
If he pitches for the Blue Jays, it would be
his fourteen team in the big leagues. Could happen as
soon as this week. Do you keep all the hats?
That'd be really cool. I've wanted to get every major
league team's hat, Like if you have it, think about
(02:00:30):
you have your own hat, and they's kind of have
minded league hats as well. Next time we have baseball player,
I don't ask him, do you keep all your hat? Like?
What do you keep all your gear? Do you keep
all your hats? You know, hats for bats. We got
a big playoff game tonight, love elimination. We lost on Saturday,
but we'll need to win today. It'll be it'll it'll
(02:00:51):
be a challenge. Little dude, maybe Calle, he's got fifty
pitches in him. Somebody's got Yu was named the National
League Player of the Week today after the Rodgers. Picture
took a no hit her into the eighth inning yesterday
and also threw a complete game shout out on Tuesday.
Mike Fires of the A's, who pitched a no hit
her last week, shared the honor with the Astros George
Springer who hit five nineteen, including a five for five
(02:01:13):
game yesterday. Those guys, I mean, those two have been
amazing so far. And the Dodgers last year kind of
a sleep at the wheel first month the season. They
have been the opposite of that so far. Rio is
the Dodgers ace right now. I don't know if anybody noticed.
Just kidding. John Ramos totally did. He mentioned it even
before the season started, said that Rio is the Dodgers
(02:01:35):
best picture and right now proving it. Finally, charges against
Connor McGregor for allegedly smashing the cell phone of a
man in Miami and then stealing it were dropped after
the man refused to cooperate with authorities. TMZ reported last
month that McGregor and the man may have reached a
settlement in the matter. So what do you make him buy?
Like a new iPhone X. I thought he didn't cooperate
(02:01:56):
because he didn't have a phone anymore, but that was
not to reach him and his cell phone went straight
to voicemail. Man. We kept calling him like, hey, you idiots,
my cell phone got destroyed. What about a land line?
What's the land line? You get out there and pressed
that was the press. It is weird? Is there hockey
on tonight? Because there's no who? Who was losing? Sharks? Okay,
(02:02:19):
who's good and who's not? Who's supposed to win that thing? What? One?
Game nine? Yeah, these Sharks are Sharks are up. It's
game to tonight. Deandrean's gonna joyces tomorrow, all right, Well,
ask Kim if he would have let Josh Jackson into
that party that they got thrown out of kidding. That's
on the Doug Gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio
