in the NBA Draft, the New Orleans Pelicans like Zion Williamson.
What a bummer night in the NBA. What a bummer night?
And look New Orleans. If you wanted me to tell
you I feel for you, I do. I do. Um.
You're a city that has produced basketball players, an area

(01:05):
the country that produces basketball players. You got cool music,
You've got good food, you got a cool vibe right
like there's like you kind of you got your own language.
There's a lot of cool things in New Orleans, but
Zion Williamson might as well be playing on the moon
if you're the NBA and he would go to New Orleans,

(01:25):
I will grant you He's got a better personality today
than Anthony Davis has had at any other point time
in his career. But Anthy Davis is a great player,
and no one's yearned to watch him play. And some
of that is the fact that they haven't won, and
some of that is market size, and some of that
is Look, I know that you guys were where I

(01:48):
was just I was. I was just working out and
I was getting ready to leave, and I walked into
a conversation about you know, the n C double. They're
so corrupt. This was guy said, they are so corrupt.
And I was like, really, huh. He's like, look at
Zion Williamson. I was like, all right, let's look at
Zion Wimson. Had he not gone to college, he would

(02:11):
have gone to the G League. Um. There were questions
about how hard he work, how hard he played, plus
he being an eighteen year old kid playing with grown men,
and not only to improve his athleticism and his game
at Duke playing against like aged players, but he his
you know, Duke promoted him. You know, playing for Duke

(02:33):
is a big thing. Thirty one times they were on
national TV this year. How many times the Pelicans were
on National TV seven? How many times would he have
been watched to us in the G League? The answer
is maybe once or zero? Right, Like, he benefited greatly
from the brand. And in addition to being kind of
off the NBA's radar map with the Pelicans, the Pelicans

(02:57):
are in the West, but they're not in the West.
Hasn't been the West since well the Louisiana purchase, really right, like,
that was the last time they were in the Western
United States. So in addition to that, no one even knows,
like the Pelicans are not a name brand because they
haven't been a brand long enough. Wait are they The

(03:20):
Hornets know, there's no more Hornets. The Hornets are now
in Charlotte, back in Charlotte where they started. You know,
you might know it because it's a clever nickname or
clever only it's it's a different nickname. But there's no
the brand has not been built up. So it's fascinating

(03:41):
to see what's because Zion could could pull his name
out of the draft, go back to college, pull his
name out of draft. Train all year. He could do
the Eli Manning and force a trade without telling anybody's
forcing the trade, but just because maybe those things should
happen for his brand. The likelihood is that Zion Williamson

(04:06):
tries to become, you know, the Russell Westbrook to Oklahoma City,
the what Lebron was to Cleveland before it became before
he left. You know, pick star player in small market
and raise that thing to prominence. Should he what he

(04:27):
should do and what he will do? Like that's it.
By the way, It be off brand for him to
do anything other than show up and want to play basketball.
But branding is so powerful and so important. It's just
very very interesting to see how this plays out. Last
night was one of those nights where you look around
the NBA You're like, look, I don't know if David
Stern did in fact rigg rig the lottery so that

(04:50):
Patrick Ewing could go to New York or Lebron James
would end up in Cleveland, But I'm not sure Adam
Silver shouldn't. What a tough night. Then the Western Conference
Finals were just Portland's bad matchup. Don't have Nurkics dead
on their feet because of fatigue, because they played Sunday

(05:12):
the Golden State Warriors, playing without two of their five starters,
and it was fairly competitive, modestly competitive most of the way.
Nothing special about those games at all. What a snooze fest?
What what could have been a celebration of the rebirth
of the New York Knicks, or of the l A Lakers,

(05:37):
or of the Chicago Bulls Instead when you just kind
of let it play out, which is I don't believe
it is rigged or however hasn't necessarily been rigged, but
if there's a special case where it should have been, yeah,
that should have been. People think that market size doesn't matter.

(05:59):
It absolute lutely does. It just does. The Knicks haven't
really been relevant for most of the past twenty years.
Yet everybody's talking about the Knicks, packed the Jets. The
Jets went to two XC Championship games. People talk a
town about them, and they're the second team in New
York City. I mean they fired their general manager Mike
mccagnet earlier today. Why because it's New York, more people

(06:20):
live there, more eyes watched TV sets, there, listen to
radio shows there, and of course they're spread throughout the country.
No one on earth has ever grown up a Pelicans
fan who's forty years old. It's it's impossible. One. The
Pelicans didn't exist into you know, the Hornets didn't exist
there until what was it twenty years ago? But what

(06:40):
he does? What I mean like, there's no real other
term for it other than disaster. I mean, it's it's
just crazy, crazy that the Pelicans are sitting there with
the number one pick and now they have Anthony Davis.

(07:03):
And Anthony Davis again. And if you think market size
doesn't matter, and I would agree that some of it
is management and the general mismanagement, but you have a
general manager who's been in charge of Lebron James and
the Cleveland Cavaliers and helped get them to the NBA finals.
Remember they had the number one overall pick right before
they acquired Lebron James and they end up in the finals.

(07:23):
His obviously all four years, but he got fired before
his his last year there, so three consecutive years in
Cleveland and despite that, Anthony Davis still wants out. He's like, oh,
Drew holiday Zion Williamson, Anthony Davis, what do you think,
big fella? I want out? Why? Because what no one

(07:44):
wants to admit. And you can't ask a coach or
a general manager or a player because they're all gonna say, oh, man,
it's a great city. I love living there, and I mean, like, look,
Crescent City is pretty cool place. Are there some dangerous parts? Hell?
Oh yeah, um, but it's there are worse places on

(08:06):
earth to be a multimillionaire. Act. There are worse places
in the NBA to be a multimillionaire. Great places to live,
cool vibe. You know. Besides, you're just there to play basketball,
show up with facility, go to the arena, go back
home to your apartment like this is not But Anthony

(08:27):
Davis has had enough. So if you think that branding
and market size don't matter, just look at what happened
last night in the NBA and what will happen tonight,
and the ratings will be ridiculously low. In spite of
the fact that these are the two best teams in
the Eastern Conference, the Bucks have earned their right to
call themselves the best team in the Eastern Conference based

(08:48):
upon their success and every statistical measure and the Toronto
Raptors are in their right to finally get to the
Eastern Conference Finals again with a game winning shot over
a talented seventies sixers team in seven games, like they have.
Both of them earned a way to be here. But
you know everyone people want to talk about but recent
success like, no, it doesn't market size doesn't matter, name

(09:10):
brand does matter. I didn't create the rules. I'm just
telling you how it plays out. Last night was a
tough night for tanking. Last night was a tough night
for the Knicks. Last night was a reality check for
the Portland Trailblazers. It becomes all the more interesting for
the l a Lakers now they have the number four pick,

(09:30):
potentially trade or the Knicks do with their pick? Do
they keep it, did they trade it? What do they do?
Because they had planned everything around the possibility of getting
Zion although now maybe get R J. Barrett. We'll catch
up with Frank I. Sola New Yorkers covered the Knicks
for years. Well, the Knicks still land a top free agent?

(09:52):
Is it Kyrie they want? Or is it Kemba they want?
Is k d a done deal? Plus what the Lakers
gonna do now? Out now it appears like don't you
don't you trade that pick as part of the package
in order to get Anthony Davis. There's a bunch of
things to get to fascinating night in which I would say,

(10:15):
initially kind of a bummer. Zion to New York, Zion
to Chicago perked up your ears and made you want
or Zion to the Lakers made you want to watch
the NBA. Now he goes to the essentially the witness
protection program with New Orleans Pelicans, and it's the witness
protection program not just because they haven't been successful, but

(10:37):
because of market size, location of the market, and lack
of sex appeal of any of the surrounding cast. That's real,
and that's fair, right, all right, Franky Sola joins us
as we discuss next. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Doug dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern

I was kind of felt led down last night. Frank
I Solo covers the NBA for the Athletic. You hear

(11:41):
him on Sirius x M NBA Radio Monday through Friday,
seven am. Frank, Uh, what was your reaction to Zion
going to or if he goes, he goes to New Orleans. Yeah,
it was a little shocking, Doug. I think when going
into the lottery, I think even though the odds were
for the Knicks the Caps of the Sun, maybe just
because of the older lotteries, we all thought, well, you

(12:02):
know what, the favorites will somehow end up with these
top picks and early on you. So the Lakers move
up in the Memphis and then of course it was
the New Orleans Pelicans moving up having a six percent chance.
That part was surprising that it was that it ended
up being three of those top four teams. So you
had the Knicks moving down clearly, But how about Cleveland

(12:23):
Phoenix and then a team like the Atlanta Hawks and
the Chicago Bulls they also dropped. Um, what about the
Knicks though? How much air is let out of the
Knicks balloon? Like, I know, the game plan is still
a bring in free agents, but you know so much
it was built around the hype of potentially bringing in Zion.
How much did this changed their off season? I think
you hit on it. They a lot of this was

(12:45):
built around Zion Williams, and I think the Knicks thought
that they had a really good chance to get him.
I think that they figured, you know what, seventeen and
sixty five, they'll be a reward you know, at the
end of the rainbow here for us, and that's not
the case. I think it's still got a good player.
You would know better than me with you know, you
followed the college very closely. There's gonna be a good
player available for them at three. Whether or not they
get that guy, that's another story. Janson uh Kawhi Leonard

(13:07):
with the fifteenth gold Roll pick. So good players are
in the draft, but it's still again about free agency,
and I just don't know a lot of people are saying, oh,
they could still make a run at Anthony Davis. I
have a hard time believing that when you look at
what the Knicks have the third overall picking them, what
else did they really have to offer? I guess they
have future picks, but I I think if you're David Griffin,
you're thinking, well, if the Knicks way to get Anthony

(13:27):
Davis and there's a chance that Kevin durankat sign there,
it's not like these future picks are gonna be worth
anything in the coming years. So I just Knicks don't
have established players. They have a seventeen and sixty five roster,
and adding the fourth overall pick to that, it's I
don't know, is that really that attractive to a team
like New Orleans when you compare it to what the
Lakers can do, and of course what a team like

(13:47):
the Boston Celtics could They have guys that are already
more established and have played in playoff games. Yeah, and
you don't want to part ways with Kevin Knox, right,
I mean that's part of He's part of one of
the building blocks of what you want to build around um.
I think they I think for Anthony Davis, I think
they'd give him up. I think they'd give up anything,
you know, just about anything to get Anthony David because
I think that would put them in a better position

(14:08):
to get Kevin Durant, possibly Kara Irving. I just don't
know if it's possible at this point. I mean, if
he trade three and Kevin Knox and maybe some calf space,
although I don't know how much calf space helps New Orleans.
But now you give a chance for New Orleans suppress reset.
Although I think the Lakers are gonna offer you know,
they're young players and the fourth pick for Anthony Davis,
but you don't We don't know if New Orleans wants

(14:29):
to do business with the with the l A Lakers,
and we don't know if I would think that. David Griffin,
you have to be smart in this case. If you're
gonna trade your best player, you have to make sure
that you get the best deal. And I understand you
don't want to trade him in the conference. But if
that's the case, then't do it. But you know, there
is a history between David Griffin and the Knicks and
it's not a great one. The Knicks were gonna hire

(14:49):
David Griffin as the general manager, and as he was
contemplated making the move, they went out and signed Tim
Hardaway's junior to an offer sheet. So David Griffin was thinking,
we'll hang on a second. You guys want me to
run the team, and you already make the moves without me,
And then he was told, well, it's going to kind
of be a dual thing in terms of running the
basketball operation doing Steve Mills. So I think that did
not go well with David Griffin. Again, if you could

(15:11):
get the best deal from the next when we do that,
I think he would. But just keep that in mind
as they're kind of going through the whole process. Doug
Olive show on Fox, Sport Trader, that's the voice of
Frankie Solo rights for the Athletic Radio on Serious XEM
covering the NBA UM One are the chances that Zion,
which he can legally do. He hasn't signed with an agent,
and you can even sign with an agent do this, says,

(15:34):
I'm not going to Orleans. I'm just not doing it.
You know. It's it's funny with a kid like that,
and we saw the way that he conducted himself all
throughout the season when he suffered the injury. The idea was,
you know what, he might be better off just shutting
it down. You're gonna be then morn overall pick with
us of what happens. He goes back and plays place well,
didn't make it to a final four, but just the
things that he said after the season, this was the

(15:55):
greatest time in my life. I love playing it, Duke.
I think his image right now is so good and
he's such a likable guy. I don't know why you
would want to mess with that. You're still in the NBA.
It's I get it. It's not New York. I think
you wanted to go to Atlanta because that's closer to
his home in South Carolina. I just don't think he
would do it. Would I completely rule it out. No.

(16:15):
I think that's a good point you bring up. But
I don't know. His image is so good. Why would
you want to sully your reputation at this point. I don't.
I don't think he will. But it is in fact
an option of card that he would. He could, he
could very well play. And then you got the Western
Conference Finals, which just I feel like a complete mismatch.
I understand the Portland's tired, but I mean, you tell

(16:35):
me the Warriors without KD, without DeMarcus Cousins, and you know,
score wise, it was fairly competitive, but it wasn't really
was It was never really in doubt, never really in doubt. Um.
I mean felt like a downer day, right, it really did.
But I also think what hurt the Western Conference Finals
is that this draft lottery had so much juice to it,

(16:58):
and because of Zion Williamson and because it was so unpredictable.
It was really one of the crazier draft lotteries that
we've seen in a long time. And you had the
big player there, so it was, you know, that should
have It's almost like there should have been the game
first and then the draft lottery, as opposed to the
other way around. So that kind of hurt the game,
I think in terms of people watching it, and then
just for the product itself. I think the quick turnaround,

(17:20):
you know, very emotional Game seven on the road. It's
difficult forty eight hours later to come out on the
road and play a team like the Words. But I'm surprised,
maybe I shouldn't be, because the Warriors have this, you know,
they have won championships, have that championship mentality, the toughness
about them. I'm surprised at how well did they played
in Game five after Kevin Durant went down those final
four team minutes. I'm thinking, all right, that's like a

(17:41):
one shot deal. Houston will win Game six and then
the Words will be fighting for their lives in game seven.
They go down there, and they played great in Game six.
And look what Steph Curry has done the last you know,
six quarters. He has scored sixty nine points. I mean,
the guy, he's been incredible. The ball is moving a
lot more than it does when Durant doesn't play. That's
not to say they're better without Kevin Durant, but they

(18:02):
play a different way. But I think it also you
have now we're probably a greater appreciation for guys like
Click Thompson, Steph Curry and Draymond Green. And in a
weird way, it's like they've become not that they were
never likable, but I think when Durant went there that
kind of it was just the rich getting richer. They've
become kind of this more likable almost in a bizarre
kind of way, more of an underdog kind of team.

(18:26):
Frank I Shula joining us in the Doug Otlips Show
on Fox Sports Radio. And then you have the Raptors
versus the Bucks tonight, which, look, there's nothing to not
like about Janic's nothing, he says all the right thing.
He's improved, he plays for his teammates, he plays both
ends of the floor, um, and there's nothing to not like.
Let's sarily about Kawhi Leonard. I know he bailed on

(18:47):
the Spurs and he's quiet whatever. They're two great players.
But I just you know, between Toronto not rating and
and you know, two kind of nondescript stars and terms
of mainstream America, I just I think the ratings are
gonna be bad, and it's gonna it's gonna be one
of those like, boy, do we still need Lebron James

(19:09):
kind of moment after tonight that could be the case.
And I do think in the second round he didn't
think about Lebron a lot because the series, except for
the Milwaukee Boston series, all of them were competitive. Boston
had some drama to it just because of all the
dysfunction of that team. That could be the case, but
I also think there are a lot of people that
want to see something new. But I do think when

(19:29):
you look at what the Warriors did last night, it's
hard now to have faith that Portland can make it
a competitive serious things can change dramatically. They win a
game to them, they got home court advantage in the
Eastern Conference. You know, you mentioned the two names, you know,
Janice and Hawaii Leonard. They're outstanding players. I mean, and
if people like the sport, they are you gonna be
drawing in the casual sports fans. Maybe not until the

(19:51):
NBA Finals, But the honest is becoming that big of
a player, and he's incredibly likable. He's a throwback kind
of player. He's all about his team. He you know,
he puts a lot of time into his craft and
into his body, something that maybe Joe Lembach should start
doing if he wants to see better results. So it's likable.
I do think you're right though, because of you know,
the fact that it is Canada that might have a

(20:13):
little bit to do with it. But I do think
the NBA Finals, assuming the Warriors get there, it will
be a different story. Yeah, I think it will be
you know, the Warriors are there and we'll see what
happens with with Durant and and if he plays um. Okay,
So what do you think the Lake what what do
you think of the Lakers move to hire Frank Vogel
but Jason Kidd on staff, I don't understand it. You know,

(20:35):
if you're all going around telling us how impressed you
were with Jason Kidd in the interview, wants you just
hire him his coach And I think from the outside
looking in, he's not hirable because he's not hirable. Well, no,
I think I think they look at it this way, Doug. Well,
they did hire him, though my things, he's not hirable
as a head coach. Well, he's been a head coach
twice already, and Frank Frank Frank Vogel had two disastrous

(20:58):
seasons with UM with Orlando, Jason Kidd made the you know,
was on pace to making the playoffs with the Milwaukee Bucks,
and he had made it. I disagree with that. He's
been a head coach twice already in the league. I
think it's more about they don't want to make it
seem like they're turning the team over to Lebron James.
So they make a concession to Lebron have Jason Kidd
will be the assistant coach, but we're hiring the head
coach because Phil Jackson wanted to hire Frank Bogel in

(21:21):
New York. You cannot tell me that Phil Jackson, you know,
isn't advising them on some type of level. And it
just so happens that it's Frank Bogel and Kurt Rambis
was involved in the hiring here. It's almost like that too,
the Genie bus Lynda Rambis, Kurt Rambis on the outside,
Phil Jackson kind of wanted and Jason Kidd that's who
Lebron wanted, and we'll see if it could work. It's

(21:41):
just bizarre when you're making a head coach have to
high you know you're going to tell him whose assistant
coach is gonna be. I just don't think that works out. Yeah, No,
it's um it's a it's an odd set of circumstances.
What's your sense of Kyrie? Is he the first choice
of the Knicks or would they prefer Kemball? You know,
you do hear things from the Knicks now that they're

(22:02):
a little worried a couple of things with Kyrie. As
you know, he's had knee issues before. You know, it's
it's not like your knee gets better. That doesn't mean
he can't still play at a high level. And also,
you know the chemistry issues on that team. You want
to blame some of the young guys, go right ahead,
But the simple fact is without Kyrie last year, they
were in five minutes of going to the NBA Finals,

(22:22):
and the team that they lost to get rid of
Kyrie Irvan and they went back to the finals. So
Kyrie Irvan at some point has to take some accountability
for what happened in Boston this season. And I just think,
you know, when you're point guard, it's kind of like
a flaky guy, and it's not really a guy that
brings the group together. Like I look at the guy
like Stepan Marbury. When Stepan Marburie was in New York,
there's no doubt that step was a terrific player. The

(22:44):
same thing in New Jersey Phoenix he had a much
better run, and the same thing in Minnesota. But your
point guard kind of needs to be the guy that
kind of lists the group up, and I don't think
Kyrie did that. He seemed to bring a lot of
guys down in his mood. He always seems to be
kind of dour and just not not the kind of
person that brightens a room. He has the opposite effect,

(23:04):
and I think in the long way, he hurts some stuff.
I think he really needs it, needs to take a
long look at the way that he goes about things
instead of worrying about telling us all the time how
smarty is. We get it. You're smart and you're a
great player. We also get that, but it is results
oriented and without you they did better than they did
with you. It's a great point, Frank, great stuff. Man
is always really appreciate you joining us after a weird

(23:27):
night in the NBA where everyone was so fired up
for everyone's so fired up for the lottery, and they're like, yeah,
I know, I don't really like this kind of random
result type of thing. Can't we get can't we can't
we get? David Stern back to freeze an envelope? Please? Then, Doug,
you know what's gonna happen next year? The team with
the worst records it won't be the Knicks, and that
team will win the lottery next year. Fans crazy Frank

(26:00):
work out if Donald progresses and Levian produces after year off,
but the timing isn't great for the Jets. This is
like a relationship that need to end, but it happened
right after the holidays. You know, like, wait a second.
You you let a guy draft, sign guys in free
agency and then you're like, yeah, now we want you fired.

(26:22):
That makes no sense except if you're the Jets, and
it makes all the sense in the world. Mm hmmm.
How much of this this is exactly guys like the Lakers,
like u c l A's basketball higher, like so many
things when it's it's not the result. Right. They're talking

(26:44):
about hiring Daniel Jeremiah, a guy from the NFL network.
There's some talks about and becoming a high level executive. Daniel,
of course, has been a scout with the Baltimore Ravens
and in their front office and with the Philadelphia Eagles
in the past, and it's it's not as much there was.
If that ends up, you end up having Adam Gates
and you have a better front office, and you have

(27:05):
Levan Bell, and you have uh and and you have
Sam Donald and you have you did a pretty good job.
I mean, like, look, dude, they they killed it in
the draft. I can make the case in the last
three drafts they've gotten the best player in the draft.
But um, and you know, you really make your name
for yourself as a as a GM what you do

(27:26):
and balancing the books and what you do a second, third,
fourth round. That's where he struggled. But the result could
be the right one, right over spending on a running back,
which we told you you shouldn't do, and it felt
like the Jets did so anyway, And this only kind
of plays up to what Adam Gates was echoing what
everybody in the league seems to be saying, and the

(27:48):
Jets chose to do otherwise. Um, And remember m mccagnet
the year before, he was the one that offered over
ninety million dollars to Kirk Cousins. Imagine how big a
disaster that would have been. So all of that said,

(28:08):
they still may be fine, but boys, the process screwed up,
and then you know, and how about the fact that
it and then it gets out. Now you're Levyan Bell
hasn't shown up at O T A s says, I'll
be ready to play football when it's time to play football,
and it becomes clear that Adam Gates is like, yeah,
I don't really want a high pie price running back

(28:28):
again could work out. It's a simple phone called Gauze
is gonna have to make and gaze this thing is
you know, I'm guessing his whole thing is like, look,
when I said I didn't want you, it wasn't that
I didn't want you. I just didn't want to spend
that much money in one position. But you know you
got your money. Let's go, let's roll that. That can
be an easy conversation. On the other hand, it's not
like levy on Bell is suddenly gonna forget about it

(28:50):
when he reads it and everybody's like, well, your head
coach didn't want you. I didn't want you. That's a
hard genie to put back in the bottle. Probably not
a story that you wanted out there. Oi, um hey,

(29:11):
Dan Buyer, I do have a question for you? Just
because UM, I owe you a pizza and you had
said you did not like the New York style pizza place,
and I was like, I was kind of I wanna
admit I was kind of dismissive because I thought it
doesn't really matter. I'm gonna get the pizza anyway, because
I took the Boston Celtics to win the series, and

(29:31):
you now he took the Bucks. You said Bucks in five.
So you're getting a pizza. Have you decided where you
wantched pizza from? Um? Yes, yes, it will be from
a new place that has been treating Fox Sports Radio. Well.
I don't know if I can say it on the air,
but it is a local place, local joint. What's the
style of pizza, Um, I'll say this. They had a
really good gluten free and they have really good wings.

(29:53):
That's that's what I've been stuck on so far. But
it's not a New York style. Would be more of
a traditional not deep dish Chicago none of that. Just
a traditional sort of pizza. But they're gluten free. Is
very good. You're really gonna buy you want me to
buy you a gluten free pizza? I'm not. I'm just
saying that that that's that's one of their Uh, they're better.
It's a good sauce, it's a good cheese. We can

(30:14):
go regularly. That's fine too. By the way, John and
uh Ryan I think also went on this. So you
may have to purchase enough for everyone. Yeah, well okay,
so when you say purchase for everyone, how big a
pizzas are these things? Well we could probably get um, yeah,
larger too. Yeah, yeah, that's not that big a deal. Yeah,

(30:36):
you act like we're breaking the bank to go, like,
you know, we might have to have a second large pizza.
Oh but you know, sometimes you think you're you know,
if you're making a pizza. Bet there's some that you
can get for your six others for sevent So it's
a little different. It's it's a fair points. It's a
it's a very fair point. All right. Coming up next, Um,

(30:56):
the pizza will be we'll have to figure out. You
gotta figure out what day, you know what Tomorrow or
Friday might be the day because we'll be watching golf, right, yes, absolutely,

That's what's happening. I'm game, Yeah, I'm getting good. There,

(32:24):
we get there, we go. Let's let's let's get to
Dan Buyer in Game Time Bag. This is Game Time
Tide on the Doug gott Leave Show. Maybe what I
got my man Doug the game today is real news?
Fake news? Alright, real news are fake news. Tiger Woods
was a no show at bet Page Black today despite

(32:45):
saying he was going to play a nine whole practice
around yesterday. Um, I think he rested today. He's he's
going with the load load management, So that would be
real news or fake news. Yeah, he was in the
show yes representation of Tiger Wood, saying that he needed

(33:06):
today to rest. There was some work put in by
Tiger last week when the gates weren't open to spectators.
That's the only issue is if people came to Bethpage
Black today hoping to see Tiger Woods, maybe they only
have a Wednesday ticket, which is very very common and
uh more likely than not of having like a full

(33:26):
week past. It was only nine holes, right, and you know,
and he's played there before and one there before. So um,
but it like, I'm not betting on Tiger resting the
day before. I like the idea of rest in four days,
the type of pressure he puts on himself, on his back,
on his body, but it doesn't Has he ever won
a major and taken the day off the day before? Um?

(33:50):
This is I don't know the history of it. I
can't give you an official number, but this isn't that
out of the ordinary. Yeah, yeah, there's I mean, Phil
Mickelson is at times practice off site where he hasn't
shown up to the you know, tournament site. It's also
gonna be cold. Tiger's got an early tea time Eastern
time tomorrow morning. It kind of adds up that, Yeah,

(34:14):
why why if you've already got your prep work in.
What's going around today? When it's a little chili? Real
news are fake news? The NBA is looking into moving
free agency up two weeks to start right after the
NBA Draft. It's fake news. But what could change? Is
this the moratorium on negotiations? You know that July one

(34:35):
is what the when you can start to have talks
with players, then they can't become official until a week later. Well,
that deadline may move up to June at six o'clock
Eastern time to maybe make a lot of these negotiations
and talks I don't know, leak out during UH when
maybe the news would come out or in a in
a more prime time. But yeah, the deadline could be

(34:57):
moved up six hours, according to the NBA. According to
a report from ESPN, I'll get it six hours. Like
that changes things. I think they're trying to make free
agency more of the you know, for to get more
attention instead of having it at midnight. Let get more
of it. It gets more attention, It gets plenty of attention.

(35:19):
I did it. Back to the decision, Like, for as
much as people want to criticize the decision, it was
pretty awesome when you think about it. Like, of Lebron
James is gonna tell us where he's going to play
on national TV and make the announcement. I would love
to see that with the free agency class that we
get this year. Oh, Kyrie's coming up fourth of July,

(35:40):
Kevin Durants the day after. That'd be great TV it
would be great TV. Um. Yeah, I don't know. I
just I don't understand the the The other problem is
guys can talk, but they're not supposed to sign, but
they agree to a deal, Like why don't just make
those all together? This aim? Right? Remember that was the

(36:01):
that's the old DeAndre Jordan thing where you got talked
out of it before you actually signed the papers. Yes,
I'm gonna get the papers. Get the papers. Real news
are fake news. Steph and Seth Curry's parents determined who
would cheer for who by making the brothers decide. Yeah,
they they They went paper rock scissors, rock paper scissors,

(36:22):
however you want to say it, to determine who would
then flip the coin, which had Warriors or Portland on
either side of the coin. As we saw last night,
Del cheered for the Warriors, Sonja cheered for the Blazers,
and then it was it was. Steph said, it was
weird to look up at his mom and she's sitting
there cheering for him in a Blazers jersey. Right, Yeah,
that's still pretty cool. Yeah. Yeah, at least they didn't

(36:45):
do the half jersey, you know, where they cut it
in half. Yeah, I hate to have jersey. Yeah, you
hate to have jersey. I'm surprised that the Trailblazers didn't
completely troll the Warriors and signed Mike Mikey Thompson as well,
who played a little bit in the NBA with the Calves,
so that they have both both both younger brothers. Real
news are fake news. The official NFL drafting com from

(37:06):
NFL dot com tweeted, quote, we want a draft lottery
to end quote is that real news are fake news?
Fake news the specta. Now, it may have been joking
and it isn't you know Roger Goodell's Twitter account saying that,
but it was from NFL dot com and it got
a lot of backlash. NFL fans didn't want a draft lottery.
Don't want a draft lottery, so the tweet that was

(37:28):
sent out earlier today did not go over as well. Well.
I mean, look, there's no more popular draft in all
of sports. In the NFL Draft. It's an unbelievable event. Um.
I'll tell you what would be cool is if they
didn't know the draft lottery until right before, right like
right before the draft. You're like, whoa like how fantasy

(37:51):
baseball is ninety minutes before the draft, you can enter
the draft room and find out would be great. Oh,
look we're picking thir heard awesome. Real those are fake news.
Major League Baseball is updating it's ball tracking technology by
using a device from Hawkeye. That was cool. It sounds

(38:13):
like real spectacular. It is Major League Baseball using the
tennis technology which is been magnificent for so many years,
but don't needs to be cyclops yes, but now it's
now it's hawk like. There's you talking about drama of
making a free agency decision, the the screen moving in

(38:34):
a tennis replay of like they're zooming in and then
you're like, oh is it in? And and then it
you know, it flips up. Oh, it's great drama. By
the way, don't expect umpires to be replaced because of
this new technology. Just Major League Baseball upgrading to try
to get better balls and strikes, different stuff like that,
So the umps are still going to be there. Finally, Doug,

(38:57):
real news are fake news. The owners of Maximum Security
are so the stewards of Churchill Downs and the Kentucky
Horse Racing Commission asking for the results of the Kentucky
Derby to be overturned. They're real and they're spectacular. Yes,
that's what they are doing, saying that certain parties weren't interviewed,
that maybe the Stewards had an agenda that all part

(39:17):
of a filing in the U. S. District Court today
by the owners of Maximum Security. The Maximum Security. The
Maximum Security cut off the other two writers. The answer
is yes. I mean, it seemed like I didn't like it,
but when I saw it, I saw it took place,
and I understand the rule. I didn't think it was
really like, here's the question, will Maximum Security be asked
to testify? Yea or nay? This is game time on

(39:45):
the duck Gottlieb show yea, nay or hey right, that's
that's actually what it is. Yea, yea or hey hey yes,
Ryan Music. We do need to correct something. You guys
had said that l Curry the Curries didn't wear the
half jerseys. They did, in fact, but the difference was

(40:06):
instead of going down the middle, they did front of
that back. Those are terrible half jerseys, are there there
We can all agree like those are terrible. I was
just wear the stupid jersey. I wish Dub would wear
his hornets jersey everywhere. You know, just the one he
actually played in. That would be great or not? That

(40:31):
would be chomping your own jersey. Yeah, Loo, Hornets pin stripes.
I did like the Hornets pin stripes. You had, no
that would be that would be bad, that would be
that would be cheesy, that'd be cheesy. Well, you know,
Damian Lillard showed up in an Oakland A's jersey and
played like the Oakland A's playing the playoffs. That's that's
what happened. Oh, the Knicks, the Calves, and the Sons

(40:52):
the best odds to land the number one overall pick.
We all know that didn't happen. Is this the end
of tanking? Find out next? Fox warts Radio has the

(41:43):
Here's the question, do you think last night was the
last we will see of tanking? Do you think last
night is the last we will see off tanking? Because
that that's a Rudy Gobert uh has reached out and
I mean as as tweeted out, we just witnessed the
end of tanking and we should be happy about it.

(42:04):
That's from Rudy Gobert's Twitter handle Ryan Music. What do
you think you think is the end of tanking? I
do not. I think well, I I think that obviously
it did the desired effect, the flattening of the odds,
so teams had a lesser chance and more teams had

(42:24):
a more equal chance. And clearly, in this one roundabout
way of the first year it happening, it's sort of
proved that. But it's almost sort of confirmation bias, because
what happens next season? If the team with the worst
record gets the number one overall pick, would we be
having this conversation? So I think from a statistical standpoint,
you have teams that will still look at this situation

(42:47):
and go, sure, our odds aren't as good as they
used to be, but we still have to put ourselves
in the best position possible to try and get the
best pick possible. Uh, Like, your probability change, but your
approach towards getting the best pick possible more or less
stays the same, unless we were to change the NBA

(43:09):
to what Dan had mentioned yesterday, which is if you
missed the playoffs, everybody gets an equal chance, because then
there is no benefit to being incredibly bad. You want
to actually be just on the outside looking in, because
then you have the same chance as the team at
the bottom, because right now the team at the bottom
still has the best chance. It just didn't happen to
work out this year. Yeah, I mean, like, look, dude,

(43:34):
here's a thing. Here's the thing. This has actually happened
for a long time. What's amazing about the tanking thing?
It's amazing about it is, um, the tanking thing hasn't worked.
The whole idea of the lottery was to cut down
on the tanking, and then they've skewed the lottery, which

(43:55):
actually still kind of helps teams to tank, and it
didn't help him in this particular case. And it all
hasn't always helped them you know, Uh, it's a weird
system that they have with takes fourteen ping pong balls
and you draw four of them. Right, that was ninety
four to two thousand and fifteen percent chance. Um, but

(44:19):
you know, you go back to two thousand eleven right before,
you know, when when Cleveland got the first pick. The
Timberwolves won seventeen games, they didn't get the first overall pick.
It has happened a bunch It's to happen a bunch
of times. It's just, um, it's just really really interesting
that had happened last night and people are like, oh,
the tanking doesn't work, like it actually hasn't worked for

(44:41):
a long time. When when when Philadelphia did get the
number one overall pick, they order you see, when they
got the third pick and they tanked, they actually you know,
traded up and they took Marquel Folts. So I think
it's really interesting that, uh, that all of a sudden

(45:03):
because more people watched. This is really my thing with
the NBA Draft lottery. We have actually had this happened
time and again where the worst teams don't get the
number one overpicked. That's why the lottery exists. But because
people watched maybe for the first time ever or clued
in on it, or because it was the New York
Knicks because the Lake is some of the names, Nicks, Bulls,

(45:26):
Lakers were all involved, and there's Zion, who by all
accounts is the number one prospect on the board. Because
of all those things, it's like people paid more attention.
But this has happened before. It's happened a bunch of
times before, and I think it's I think it's hilarious.

(45:49):
It's hilarious that now they're like, well, now teams won't tank. Okay,
part of the tanking is not just it's not just
giving yourself the best opportunity to get the most to
get the number one overall pick. It's also shedding your
roster of you know, bad contracts so that you can
be a player in free agency. Like did the Knicks

(46:10):
want Zion Williamson. Yeah, but a huge factor in what
they try to do was getting rid of bad contracts
so they could bring into max players. And oh yeah,
by the way, as much as tanking didn't work and
didn't land them Zion Williamson and stick at the third
pick overall in the NBA draft, I don't actually think

(46:30):
this is the end of tanking, and I don't think
it should be the end of the lottery. The lottery
is designed to have teams not tank because it it
doesn't always help you to lose more games. And I
think the idea of all that happened last night only
tells you that there is risk and reward to both,

(46:51):
but both plans oh risk and reward to it. There's
also some of these trades are lottery protected, top three protected,
top five protected. Where do you protect? You know, in
what draft? There's a little bit of luck to it.
But there's this idea that last night was the end
of tanking, and I don't see it, don't see it

(47:12):
at all, you know, especially look at what the Lakers
did at the end of the sea Way. They couldn't
make the playoffs. They stopped fighting to try and make
the playoffs, and they put themselves into play and they
end up looking into the fourth overall pick. So we
can sit here and go like, teams shouldn't tank, and

(47:32):
you might be right. It depends upon the team, depends
upon the coach, depends upon the general manager, depends up
how a bunch of different things. Um, But you know,
I don't think it's the end of tanking, because tanking

(47:53):
does work. It worked for the Bucks, that's how they
end up loading up on young players. It worked for
the Celtics. It may not have worked in terms of
getting them a superstar, but did you know got him
to the third pick and they traded and got you know,
Jayson Tatum. Well, they had the number one pick and
they traded the third pick to get Jayson Tatum. You know,

(48:15):
I mean tanking. His work to worked for the Houston Astros.
It's worked in the NFL, like it does in fact work.
It may not work to perfection, you may not get
We say this with the Boston Celtics, they had two
first round picks, two lottery picks when Tim Duncan was

(48:36):
the number one overall pick that happened, excuse me, and
they got neither of them. Neither. They end up getting
Chauncey Billups and they traded him in the first year
Chauncey Billips and Walter McCarty. So it's like it's almost

(48:58):
like one of these things that people are just becoming
aware to it. It's a lot like this, uh the
Paola deal where people where parents paid people to fudge
their fudge their their their kids transcripts to get them
into college. Like, yeah, you didn't know this has happened before. Obviously,
it only validates the idea that we thought rich parents
will do anything it takes. Usually they used to just

(49:20):
put their name on a building and then their kids
would get accepted in the school. You know, now this happens.
I mean, it's a little bit like when we have
body cams on traffic stops where things go wrong, Like, yeah,
this is what it really looks like. We're just getting

(49:41):
a snapshot into what it really looks like. In the draft,
there is real risk and real reward too losing games intentionally,
And though the Knicks technically struck out, they stick in
the thnumber three pick and they still have a ton
of cap room and they still could sign Kevin Duranton,
Kemba Walker, Kyrie Irving and they'll be fine. Will it
be as as celebrated as if they had Zion Wimson?

(50:03):
Probably not? But R. J. Barrett is not a terrible
door prize Yes, rymusic. Do you think from the NBA's perspective,
like Adam Silver, do they feel they have to feel
validated today? Right? Like, oh, look, we changed the system.
And here's how it worked out. Three out of those
teams that thought that they were going to get the
top pick didn't, and then another one even or most

(50:25):
of them even got knocked out of the top four. Um.
I look, I think that what happens after these things
is there's always cause call for a change. And you know,
Adam Silver, they did change some stuff, and they did

(50:46):
kind of they kind of waited it a little bit.
You know, now the bottom three have the same percentage chance,
and none of those three ended up getting it. I
don't think anything changes. I just don't. Um, I really don't.
What would be interesting is this whole kind of timeline
of draft picks, and this is the first year where

(51:09):
you can sign with an agent and still get back
and the timing of when you could, like Zion Lem say,
could go back to school. That could change things. So
I don't know. There's no perfect system. There's no perfect system.
I thought that. I think the lottery created an amount
of attention. I do think that it takes away from

(51:31):
the idea of tanking, and it always has and I
actually think that creating these different tiers only makes you
want to tank more. Don't believe me. The Knicks did
still get the third pick and still have all this
cap space, so my guess would be nothing changes, nothing changes.
Bizarre year though, man, just like a lot of weird

(51:52):
stuff going on. I don't know. Uh. Scott Kushner covers
the Pelicans for The Advocate. Are the Pelicans concerned at
all that Zion Williamson would refuse to play for him?
Are they considering trading the pick? Are they considered? Are
they keeping Anthony Davis? If not, would they trade into
the Lakers. We'll take you down to Nola and get

(52:16):
reaction and what should have been and still should be
a momentous day for a franchise that has been crushed
over the weight of expectations, injuries, and then the what
appeared to be imminent departure of their superstar, only to
have all that changed last night or did it by not?

Draft Lottery win, Whether Anthony Davis stays or not. Scott
is it's a franchise saver. Really, it feels like a
franchise that has you know, had to move because the
hurricane changed names owned by the NBA for a period
of time, you know, now owned by by by the Benson's. Uh.

(53:45):
Really kind of a miraculous save. Last night. What what
is the feeling like in the city, I mean a bulliance. Uh,
it's just everybody is thrilled. It was very unexpected. Um,
I think everyone there. There was a lot of talk
of Zion Williamson, but mostly because I think people hoped
that a team that got that pick number one would

(54:08):
trade Anthony Davis for Zion Williamson UM. And instead you
don't even have to do that. So you still have
the Anthony Davis p sitting out there and now you're
gonna get Zion Williamson. And people were running in the
streets last night all of a sudden as as phones
started blowing up all across the city. So what do
they do now with Anthony Davis. I mean, the first

(54:29):
step is they're going to have a meeting and David
Griffin has acknowledged this. They're going to try to get
everybody on the same page, uh, and try to persuade
him to stay. Things are a lot different than what
he demanded a trade under. First of all, the Lakers
who were is clear number one. I think that has
gone a little sideways, that organization. And at the same time,
the Pelicans hired a new GM, they have a new

(54:50):
training staff, they have new investment um and now they have,
you know, groomed grooming a superstar potentially in Zion Williams.
So there's a lot it's a lot different offering than
it was in mid January and he decided to get
to leave, and so I think they're going to try
to make that pitch. Um. I would say it's still

(55:10):
definitely unlikely. He stays, Um, but that step one and
then step two is then start looking for a trade.
Is there any possibilities iron Does says, hey, man, don't
draft me. I mean there's always a possibility. I suppose
I would be surprised if that word occur. Um. We
have been given no indication that would happen, except for

(55:31):
from people talking on TV. UM. But yeah, I mean
it's the Pelicans are not under that impression at all
that that is something that they are concerned about. Yeah, No,
I've what about what about Drew Holiday? Like, I'm sitting
there and I'm I'm thinking, is there a way to
get John Morand I mean, obviously that's anybody's dream, But
considering they're AU teammates, South Carolina kids like in that

(55:54):
the dream scenario, find a way to to get a
three way deal, maybe with the Lakers or somebody where
they get that number two. I mean they can try
to figure out a way to Um, you know, it
depends what Memphis wants to do. I don't know exactly
what they're thinking, but certainly the Knicker trade partner, and
especially if they go get uh, you know, Kevin Durant
or Kyrie Irving, then all of a sudden, you know
they are, you know, could be very willing to part

(56:16):
with that number three pick for Anthony Davis. And everything changes,
and we saw last night and quickly things can can switch.
And yeah, I would be surprised if they wanted to
load up on this draft. I also wouldn't be surprised
if they try to go get a whole bunch of
future picks from someone for a d There is a
lot of options, and you you ultimately have the best

(56:38):
piece available in the trade market in Anthony Davis, and
now you have the best piece in the draft in
Zion Williams. And so they're really sitting in a incredibly
and bizarrely uh great position. This is a hard question
because you cover the team, you live in the area.
But will it ever work there? Right? Like it's one
of those things where we're just like, yeah, I mean

(56:59):
they've had at any Davis and Drew Holiday and they've
made the playoffs. They've never Paul and they've had had
Chris Paul right. But I mean, look, I know that
had it not been for kind of politics really and
that you had, you had to go back. They didn't
want to go back from Oklahoma City. They wanted to
be there. It's just it, it's a It's not the
easiest sale in the world. Do you think it ever

(57:20):
really works them? If it doesn't work now, I would
say that there is probably not gonna work because the
difference now between what Anthony Davis dealt with, which was
uh A franchise and certainly an ownership group that didn't
completely know what they were doing with the NBA side.
I think when they purchased the NBA franchise they thought

(57:41):
they could kind of run them just parallel with the
Saints and not realize they had to be two separate silos,
and they ended up not investing probably the level of
they should have, ended up having some some trouble. They
allowed a general manager to stay in place for far
too long and things deteriorated. And you know, they made
the second round of the playoffs last year, which is

(58:02):
forgotten now because they were so bad this past season. Um,
but it's not as if they can't win. There's nothing
about the area that makes it impossible to win. This
team has just never won. I mean they've never gotten
pasted the second round. And the history of the Franchi
sixteen years, so it's not as if, um they've had
a center tests. But now they are investing. They hired

(58:23):
David Griffin and who was definitely the hottest name and
the you know of all the executive you know openings.
And they hired Aaron Nelson, who is with training from
the Scenic Suns, who really revamped their entire health organization.
And so if you don't make this work, now, I
don't know how it's gonna work. And then Dian Williams
and telling your lap. So they're doing all the right

(58:43):
things to make this work. Uh. And I just if
this doesn't work, then they've really given it a shot.
And the swung in miss I think before there are
reasons why things have not gone to plan, and this
would be the ultimate test of maybe it's just as
flat doesn't work. Yeah. Is it? Is it a basketball town?
I guess is the other thing? Right? It's a town

(59:05):
that supports winners. Uh, And that is for certain. I
think that that is very clear. I mean when they
made the playoffs last year, the games were sold out,
everything was big, and the team mattered, and then they
went right back to being terrible the next season. So
they've never had a structure in place that allowed the
team to flourish for multiple seasons in a row. And
so it's hard to judge a fan base, especially in

(59:27):
a small market. It's hard to judge a fan base
based on you know, they're not good fans when you've
really never given them a consistent and solid product to watch.
And so I think that is the real test is
if they actually do that. Two people show up and
it's hard. I mean, it's the smallest mark in the NBA.
You've got an NFL team, you've got a huge SEC
team ninety miles up the road. It is not an

(59:49):
easy sell by any stretch. But it is unfair I
think to totally, you know, call, to say that this
team can't be supported here, I think that is uh,
maybe a step too far. Yeah, No, it's a it's
it's it's it's gonna it's gonna be interesting, gonna be
fascinating to watch. The last thing, how good is Anthony

(01:00:10):
Davis Like? Reputation wise, elite level players, some of that
has helped out by the fact they won Nation Championship Kentucky.
Some of that is he's had some unbelievably productive days um.
But there's also this like, well, if he's so good,
how come they haven't been consistently in the playoffs. And
you're trying and explain, like, you know, Drew Holiday's wife
was sick, and then Drew has been hurt and a

(01:00:32):
d has been heard or whatever. In Europe, you watch
him every day. How good is he? He's extacular? I mean,
he really is a top notch NBA player in almost
every sense. I mean that defensively he is uh outstanding
the weather, he can rem protect in the way that
he can get out and stop picking rolls and stuff
them out, the way he can score from almost every

(01:00:53):
place from the court now he can shoot threes um.
And he's got an attitude. He shows up every day.
He does the right stuff. I mean, until this trade demand,
he was kind of a model citizen in New Orleans.
The cast around him was bad. The health, I think,
I think a lot of the medical stuff can be questioned. Uh,
that was certainly a problem. They were always injured and
they were not ever built with a sustainable model in mind,

(01:01:16):
and every year he had a brand new roster. Basically
he was dealing with He played with you know, seven
D teammates or something like that in seven and seven seasons.
It's it was never gonna work that way, and they
need to show him if they have any chance of
resigning him, that things are different and he because he
is spectacular, you will never get equal value back for

(01:01:37):
him in a trade, no matter how excited people are
about this getting this number one pick, you're never gonna
get the type of quality player that he is to
replace that kind of production. Yeah, great stuff, man, Well,
listen should be fascinating to see exactly what takes place
from Pell's uh in the upcoming weeks and upcoming months.

(01:01:58):
Scott Kushner covers Bellicans for The Advocate. Fallen on Twitter
at Scott D. Kushner and check out his piece The
Pelicans totally transformed by the NBA Draft lottery win, whether
Anthony Davis stays or not. Thanks so much, Scott. Thanks
a couple of things that I think people are just
like they perked up their ears. They didn't realize that
New Orleans is the smallest market in the NBA, right,

(01:02:20):
Like I think people think Salt Lake and Oklahoma City
or smaller, They're not. San Antonio not smaller. It's a
small market. It has not. It was never a big market.
It's never a great basketball market, and it has not
regrown since Katrina. Um Katrina made Houston even bigger as
there was a certain amount of people who migrated to

(01:02:44):
Houston and have never kind of new never come back.
But it wasn't a big market and it wasn't a
good basketball market, and it makes it really really tough,
really tough. But if you know anything about old time
basketball movies, the fish that save Pittsburg, could Zion save
the Pelicans? Huh, there's a there's I'm giving away ideas

(01:03:06):
to Hollywood. Patton pending, patent pending. Let's get you to
Dan Buyer or find out what else is going on
the world sports? What he got Doug Tonight, It's Eastern
Conference Finals Game one Raptors and Bucks at eight thirty
Eastern time. Last night, the Warriors took a one oh
lead on the Blazers in the Western Conference Finals without
Kevin Durant, and it looks like they're gonna do so
without Durant in Game two. Yahoo Sports Chris Haynes reporting

(01:03:28):
that Durant will not play tomorrow nights because of his
strained calf. In the NFL, the big news of the day,
the Jets fire general manager Mike mccagnan. They named head
coach Adam Gaze is the team's interim general manager. The
team also dismissed Vice president of player personnel Brian heimer Dinger.
New York Daily News reported that there was friction between
Gaye and mcagnan over the team's personnel in free agency,

(01:03:50):
saying that Gaye was against the team signing free agent
running back Levy on Bell. The NFL that Work says
the Patriots had talks with the free agent linebacker Jamie Collins.
The Seahawks are de terms on a contract with quarterback
Geno Smith. In baseball, the Yankees got two home runs
from Glabor Torres. They're on top of the Oriols five
three at the six, hitting in Game one of a
double headed Gary Sanchez his home run number twelve on

(01:04:12):
the season, Twins in Angels. Right now on the ninth,
Twinkies trying to close it out eight four Minnesota, while
in the third Diamondbacks blanking the Pirates three nothing. Giants
have jumped out to a three one lead on the
Jays in the second and no Tiger Woods at Bethpage
Black today. Tomorrow, the PGA Championship starts. Tiger on Tuesday
said that he was gonna play nine holes and they
practice round, but didn't even show up to the course today,

(01:04:35):
resting for tomorrow's first round of the second major of
the year. We'll be back to the Doug Gottlib Show
in ten seconds. But first, a word from Farmers at
Farmers Insurance. We know every windshield collision has a unique sound.
Beetle bird, boop, drone, seen it, covered it? Dr Farmers,
we are Farmers under written. My Farmers took fire Insurance

(01:04:55):
Exchange and affiliates products on the vable in every state. Guys,
I'm kind of dragging it. I'm not gonna lie to you.
I was texting Ryan Music like to the night. You know.
The best thing about being an adult is my wife
calls it adulting, Like, what are you doing right now?
I'm grows I'm adulting. What do you mean you're adulting?
I'm grocery shopping. The best thing about being an adult

(01:05:17):
is the worst thing about being adult, right you guys,
know what that is? No bedtime. My kids hate bedtime.
It doesn't matter what time it is, it's never early
enough for them, right, Um, and so no bedtime. So
in an effort to be like Dan Buyer and to
do the Game of Thrones thing and to catch up,

(01:05:38):
I was like, oh, well, I'm gonna watch Game of Thrones.
I'm gonna catch up to Dan Buyer. All I needed
was what was it, Dan? Three episodes? That's all I
needed was three episodes to catch up. Yeah, I'm on
episode or season one, episode three is what we completed. Yes,
I'm like, I'll catch up. And then I get on
the Amazon and I've I've read a bunch of Jack

(01:05:59):
Ryan novels and um they're Tom Clancy books whatever and ever.
You know, one of my favorite books of all time
is Hunt For in October's one of my favorite movies
of all time. And so I watched the pilot of
Jack Ryan, which is a couple of year old show
that was on that's on Amazon. And next thing I know,

(01:06:22):
it's two fifty in the morning and I'm like four
episodes in and I wake up this morning and I'm like,
give me some more Jack Bryan. Oh yeah, The best
thing about being an adult is no bedtime. The worst
thing about being an adult is no bedtime. Uh music,
what what's what's your last binge? Last thing you binge done?

(01:06:46):
I think it was that? Really you watch all of them?
Is it over? Is it done? Uh? No, they're working
on a season two. That's only it's only one season, right, yeah,
just currently right now is season one and they're working
on season two. So when did this originally drop? Oh?
I don't know, steen right, something like that. No, not

(01:07:06):
that old. I think it was maybe or maybe even
it's really good. It's really really good. What about you, Ramos?
Was last thing you benched? Wrong? Microphone? Are we being
Game of Thrones? Last? Are you? Are you all caught up? Yeah?
We did. We did it at the end of season seven,

(01:07:28):
and it took because they were off like what a
year and a half roughly, I think almost two years
before they debuted a couple weeks ago. So I watched
the whole My Susan and I watched the whole one
through seven in that time, really, and she into it. Yes,
she enjoyed it as well. Yeah, my wife is like,
I can't do sci fi? How do I combat that?

(01:07:50):
Buy or how would you how would you combat that?
If you're trying to talk to your wife into watching
Game of Thrones and combat and she doesn't want sci fi.
She's like, I don't want to watch sci fi, Like
I don't think of it as science fiction fantasy. I
think would be yes, yes, and I My wife is
hook line and sinker on it. She's more into it
than I am, And I was like, why is it?

(01:08:11):
The storylines? Is it? What is? She likes the male
but talks um no a lot. She likes the era,
That's what she She likes the medieval sort of theme, like,
that's what she likes. The look of it, the feel
of it. That's what really has drawn her into Game

(01:08:33):
of Thrones more so than me. She wants to wear
furs of of of we came to work on horses today.
So yeah, yeah, now music. Have you guys done Game
of Thrones? Are you into that? I've watched the first
three episodes, so you're the same place as buyer, correct,
But I'm not currently I'm basically waiting. It's such like

(01:08:55):
an investment. I'm basically waiting for the summertime when there
are less live sporting events and then I'm going to
try and conquer it this summer. I'll tell you what
I did with UH with the Wire, and I did
this with UM with Breaking Bad. Was I downloaded them
onto my iPad and I would I I binge watched them,

(01:09:19):
but then I would also like some of it. I
would plug in in my car as I was driving
in because I used to when I worked in New
York City. I used to have like an hour drive in,
an hour and a half drive out, kind of like
I have now, and I would actually just kind of
listen to it and not always watch it. Sometimes go
back and watch it, but listen to it. It was
just as good, just as good. So that's how I
binged like I went through. I did the Wire in

(01:09:40):
like a month, and I did UH Breaking Bad in
like a month as well. All of them they were
both obviously well well concluded. And then I did it,
which is what I kind of think I'll probably have
to watch. I I gotta do the Game of Thrones
thing as it happened. Just too many people watch this
thing for me to not know at all what I'm
talking what they're talking about. Right. It just it feels
like when you're walking into a political conversation, like you

(01:10:02):
know what Bernie Sanders said, Like I got no idea
what Bernie Sanders said, so I gotta have something to
offer to the conversation. They started talking Game of Thrones.
I can't even say spoiler because I don't they're not
even spoiling anything that I know anything about being of spoilers.
Baker Mayfield was asked about Odell Beckham Jr. Already missing
a day of o t A's here's Baker. Baker is

(01:10:24):
at the point of Odela obviously had so many years
under his belt, and he could just stepped right there
whatever he has to you know, that's the type of
talent he is. But yet at the same time, we
have to we have to work for it. It's not
just gonna happen. That's where we have things like you know,
mini camp in June and then also training camp. You
try to talk him into coming before you just let him.
He let a guy like that be him. You know,
everybody has the routine, you know, stick to what's working,

(01:10:45):
and for him, obviously it's been working for a while,
and so you know what he's gonna do. What he's
gonna do. You gotta trust that he's gonna be there
when it matters, and you know, we know who who
he is. So I don't know if I saw this,
but Odell Jack Beckham Jr. Was absent until yesterday, then
he skipped today. I actually think skipping today is worse
than being absent before that. I mean, like, this is

(01:11:06):
like trying to get a kid to a workout. It
comes to a workout and then you're like, are you
gonna come back? Like, yeah, I don't know, And it
almost makes as arrogant as it appears where you're not
going to invest in your new teammates, I think it
appears to be even more arrogant when you do show
up and then you're like, you know what, I'm not
really missing anything if I don't show up, right, Like

(01:11:31):
that's really I mean you do you even got the
sense not necessarily annoyance, but kind of a matter of fact. M. S.
Baker Mayfield like, look, if we want to do this
kind of gotta do this. Is there one practice that's
gonna fix everything? No, but it makes it so much easier,

(01:11:52):
so much more likely, you know, and in the kind
of binge watching thing, like if you if it's one
thing to say like, I'm not in the Game of
I haven't watched Game of Thrones, But to watch one
and then go like, yeah, I think that's even more

(01:12:13):
alarming than I just I haven't seen I haven't. I
don't have the band with that's usually that that's my
argument usually, which is I just don't have the band
with the fully invest to understand the characters, because once
I go in, I'm in. But if you watch the
first one and you don't want to watch anymore, like,

(01:12:34):
I think that's worse. I think that's worse. Granted, pilots
can be a little you know, pilots can still kind
of figure out what the show is and once you
see them the second one, you know, but for him
to show up the first, to finally show up at O. T.
A S. And then it just it makes it seem
like he was doing people a favor, all right. Coming
up next, Christoper Sorry thinks it's time for Damian Lillard

(01:12:56):
to step up his game. That's next. Be sure to

(01:14:02):
will be substitute for him in certain areas. This was
Chris bruss had on First things first, talking about the
Blazers disappointing performance in playoffs. So far Damian Lillard went
to another level after out playing Westbrook and and then
what he did against Denver when you're saying you went
to another level. As far as how we talk about it, yes, yes,

(01:14:22):
you're saying he was always a perennial All Star, but
now he's kind of you know, top toy in with
that super label, right, and now welcome to that world,
because now you're gonna get scrutinizes like Russell Westbrook, scrutinizes
like James Harden. And you can't have two games like
you had in games seven against them, for even though

(01:14:43):
you won, and last night you're shooting in the last
two games seven. So he's either gonna show he is
this superstar now or he's just a perennial All Star,
a great player, but not on that elite, ultra eat level, correct,
which is what he is. He's not as bad as

(01:15:05):
he's played. I think I think it's just fatigued man,
Like it's a lot to carry it. This is one
of the things that again, this is the things that
we underrate Kevin Durant about, right, Like Kevin Durant is
gonna drop to thirty five seemingly every night and it's
not effortless, but it doesn't seem to require the same

(01:15:26):
amount of energy it does for Staff. That's why you
have these up and downs this time in the in
the NBA, Lillard even more so, even more so, we
haven't under this hole. We we well, here's what we do.
We adopt a narrative. We like Damiel. Lillard's so underrated. No, no,
I mean not underrated. He's not undiscovered. He's got his

(01:15:49):
own shoe. He's been an All Star. It's kind of
got his own franchise. He's really good. I don't think
he's a superstar. I think he's a he's a star.
He's a star player for the Portland Trailblazers. He's not
as dynamic as Steff is. He does not seem to
have the consistent ability to have the spurts of Staff,
and Steff just appears to be do what he does

(01:16:11):
just better. That's all that. That's that's really it. Um.
Steff is a better passer. Lillard has never been seen
as a great defender. Steff is not a great defender,
but plays seems to play pretty hard and much more
clever at getting steals. It feels like a little bit
more clever. Lillard not just not quite as good a
finisher as steff Is. He's gonna pass her now, it's

(01:16:33):
gonna finish her. Does have range, but maybe not the
same consistent, ridiculous range of Steph Curry. He's just kind
of a notch below and that's basically where he's rated.
Does it? You know nothing else? So I would love
to go crazy and tell you all these different things,
but that's that's the God's honest truth is that Damian

(01:16:57):
Lillard wasn't under rage did before he blew up early
on the playoffs, and he's not overrated now. The reason
that he's properly stacked kind of behind some of the
uber elite guards in the NBA is because of nights
like the last two nights like Look, the truth is
that I don't love how Russell Westbrook plays all the time,

(01:17:20):
but I'd rather have Russell Westbrook than Damian Lillard. Even
though Damian Lillard outplayed Russell Westbrook in that series, doesn't
mean that Damian Lillard is better than Russell Westbrook. Empirically,
he was better over those five games. Some of it
was Russell Westbrook getting frustrated. Some of it was the
surrounding talent not creating the space for him. And some
of it is the fact that we do have a
tendency in basketball to value shooting as opposed to all

(01:17:43):
around game. We just do. I mean, that's that's one
of the things that I'm obviously not being the greatest
shoot in the world, I've tried to preach is that, like,
you don't have to be the greatest shooter to be effective.
That's why, like when you're playing pick up basketball, I
don't think you should necessarily shoot to get on the
court deafly not shoot three point shots because that eliminates
a whole group of guys that they will never take

(01:18:04):
a three point shot. So why does that somehow validate
them getting back onto the floor and pick up basketball?
And that's what the Fox said. Say, take a list
to what Jeff Van Gundy said on the broadcast last
night about Steph Curry and why he struggled against Houston.
Everybody who was trying to build in an excuse for
Curry that his hand was bothering up, No, he was missing.

(01:18:24):
That happens to good players. And now what you see
the last two games, he's just knock gonna end, and
so he was just in a shooting. Something I love
when people say I could tell his hand was impacting
the shooting, Like how his his shooting was not being
impacted and it might have affected a couple of finishes
with his left hand, but not a ton. He just

(01:18:45):
like that. That's the thing with shooting is that you
can have erratic nights when you shoot the ball from
thirty feet away. If you're barely off at thirty then
all of a sudden, my time it hits the rim.
You're off enough to miss the further out. You are
the the less room for error that there is. So

(01:19:06):
I agree with Van Gundy. There wasn't anything wrong. Was
anything I've told you. Durant is more consistent. Part of
it is that less people can affect him. Part of
it is he doesn't shoot as many threes, so he's
more consistent. And even though Durant is not necessarily strong,
because he's big and he's strong ger, you know he

(01:19:29):
has the ability to play a little bit through contact.
There have been nothing wrong with Steph Curry. This is Steph.
He'll have some nights where he can't buy one, and
then he has nights like last night where literally every
time it leaves his hands, you think it's going in.
Every single time it leaves his hands, you think it's

(01:19:51):
going in. And that that's a powerful thing that he has.
Really kind of an amazing thing that he has. We
got a lot for coming up here on the Doug
Gottlieb Show. Um, I watched the draft lottery and I
felt like Zion's reaction it was like a lot of
our reaction. It's kind of like the entire night in

(01:20:14):
the NBA. There's certain things that we're in denial of
as sports fans, were just in denial of as Americans.
And I think once we start to at least accept
on some level the realities of business and of life
and work from there, now we start having realistic conversations. Right.

(01:20:39):
I've had this with people about well the seventies sixers
should look to trade for Lebron James, Like, hey, start
with this. Lebron James is not moving his family. It's
not happening. He doesn't move all the way from Cleveland's
hometown to Los Angeles. Have two homes in Los Angeles,
have production companies, have five different ohs with five different networks,

(01:21:03):
and then all of a sudden, you know, ten eleven
months into it go you know what, guys, let's move
to Philadelphia when he has one about to enter high school,
one about to enter middle school, and one who's about
to enter elementary school. Like, that's not happening. And so

(01:21:25):
when I do, I think there are things in sports
that that in theory make a bunch of sense that
will never happen. But they're fun to talk about, sure,
but they'll still never happen, Which brings me to Zion Williamson.
There's something people are suggesting will happen that I don't
think ever will and almost feel bad talking about it.

Radio m m mmmm, brought to you by Farmers and Farmers.
We've seen almost everything, so I cover almost anything. When
it's game time, have an experienced player help you stay
out of the game, put their experience into play at
Farmers dot com. Farmers Um. This is a hard thing
to do in broadcasting, which is everybody has friends in

(01:22:29):
the industry in which you cover um and you have
to process that, but not I don't think you can
use that in how you feel right, Like, if your
friend does something bad, you gotta say it was bad.
If your enemy or something you don't like does something good,
you could. So that's how I've always lived my life. Additionally,

(01:22:50):
now that this may sound super weird, okay, but I
don't really have sports teams I cheer for, Like I
like the Chargers, um they trained close to my house.
They were the one team that didn't leave Southern California

(01:23:10):
when I was in high school, like the Raiders and
Rams did. But I can't honestly tell you like I'm
a die hard know every player. You know. I'm friendly
with people in the front office because they lived near me.
I like, I like the fact that they're kind of
underdog status in Los Angeles. But I can't. Even the

(01:23:32):
Angels who Ryan Music and I have bonded over can't
tell you that I'm like super hardcore watching every you know,
watching every single game, Like I know that Shohio Tani
hit a home run which he didn't even hit on
the screws and he almost hit it out of the
ball like not just out of the out of the yard,

(01:23:53):
literally out of the ballpark their day in Minnesota. It
it was Monday night. He's unbelievable. But know I'm like,
I'm not when you're when you're an athlete, and I
haven't been an athlete obviously for fifteen years, you don't
really have favorite teams. You know, your favorite team is
when you're playing on to invest in that, and then
when you get into national sports radio, maybe the teams

(01:24:15):
that you from where you live or where you were
grew up, you may still have an affinity for, but
you can't quote them chapter in verse because you were
an athlete. Now you're now you're doing national sports. So
I don't have I don't have a squad. I don't
there's nobody who I I. There's nobody who I have

(01:24:37):
that that colored glasses on four. But I think in
the media, a lot of these guys are New Yorkers,
A lot of these guys of Syracuse guys, A lot
of these guys and New Yorkers, and they kind of
always have their New York team, and so they react
and put stories out there, which it doesn't mean that

(01:24:57):
they're not valid stories. It just means their level of
importance or likelihood or residence is made greater because it's
their team. Take the New York Knicks. Now, do I
think the Knicks are a big name team nationally? Yeah,
they have been relevant truly outside of New York in

(01:25:18):
a long time. Um, but are are our affinity on
both drafts for the Jets, the Giants, the Net. The
Knicks more so than the Nets, like the They're only
discussed because they're New York teams. And I think a
good portion of it is sometimes a fan basis, and

(01:25:39):
you know viewers in the Eastern but I think a
bunch of it is guys that talk about it are
New Yorkers and that's their team, right stephen A and
a app report and then even you know, all those
the ESPN shows are now in New York, not just Connecticut.
There all in New York, produced by New Yorkers, And
it becomes when you're in New do you think about

(01:26:00):
New York stuff? So there's this there's this pouting that
takes place, pouting that takes place by New Yorkers when
they don't get their way. How can not everybody see
how awesome we are? And I think part of that
pouting has come out today, which is like, hey, you
know what Zion should do. Zion should refuse to play

(01:26:23):
for the Partland Trail for the New Orleans Pelicans. Actually
it's not in that voice. It's more, hey, Zion shouldn't
play for the Pelicans. You know what he should do?
If you don't want to train him to New York
where he wants to be, he should go back to
Duke or go train for a year. That's what he
should do. He should use his leverage. You know what's
funny about people telling Zion Williamson that he should demand

(01:26:46):
a trade or refuse to go and play for the Pelicans.
Those are the same people that said he shouldn't come
back and play for Duke after he hurt his knee
when his shoe ripped off. This would not only be
off brand for Zion Williamson and out of character for
Zion Williamson. But like, look, let's just be honest. He's

(01:27:09):
got a big, bright personality, but he's a kid that
went to a small private school in South Carolina in
high school. And yes, he went to Duke, and you're
in the fish Bowl playing at Duke, But Duke's a
small kind of private school. It's kind of set to itself.
You get to kind of grow up and live your life,
and might be the best thing for him. This just

(01:27:31):
in from Mark Stein at the Stein Line Right for
the New York Times. The Pelicans, I'm told, have sold
in the neighborhood of three thousand season ticket packages for
next season in the wake of winning last night's NBA
Draft lottery and a chance to draft Zion Williamson number
one overall. Dude, when you're a kid from the South
and you get to stay in the South, granted, Atlanta
would be closer to home, but Nolan's ain't bad like

(01:27:55):
r J. Barrett, New Orleans, a Canadian kid, and then
I don't love it. Don't love it, a kid from
South Carolina and Nola, a kid who you know has
always been the guy in a small town in the
NBA smallest town. I just I don't think there's a

(01:28:19):
reality of it. You know. It's the reason that I
don't spend a lot of time on the show talking
about these And we've had multiple guests saying, you know
what they should do is they should trade Lebron, Like
that sounds great, but The reality is Lebron just got there.
He's got three kids, His kids are in school. You're
not gonna yank him out of school and move away
from l A and then moved to Philadelphia or whatever

(01:28:42):
and try and win a championship. Like, No, Lebron's like,
I've won four championships. You guys fix it. I'll show
up and win my fifth. Yeah. I mean you really
think Zion Williamson is gonna refuse playing for the Pelicans.
He likes to play basketball. They wanted his rights, that

(01:29:03):
drafted number one overall in the draft, and he'll get
to play basketball and he'll be the guy and if
he's really good, he can elevate him. You need a
little bit of luck, and Anthony Davis had a lot
of crumby luck. They just did. And you had a
lot of injuries right into the Warriors, had some coaching changes,
ownership change, front office change. But if you're Zion, you say, hey,

(01:29:29):
we're gonna put the whole franchise, the whole thing around you,
and you're eighteen years old, I just don't think there's
a reality to doing it. Can he yes? But what's
that Chris Rock says, you could drive a car with
your feet, but that doesn't make it a good idea.
Zion Williams could play a game of chicken, don't draft me,
or I won't show up, I'll pull out of the draft.

(01:29:51):
You could do it, but it wouldn't be a good idea.
You know, you start your clock on playing and then
if a couple of years in you feel like this
ain't working and I'm not getting what I want to get,
then you behind the scenes try and get out of there.
But I don't see I don't see away in which

(01:30:13):
it happens. You can't tell me. A kid who had
decide to come back and didn't have to for Duke
is the same kid who's going to somehow leverage the
ability to go back to school or to not play
with whether or not he will go number one overall
in the NBA Draft New Orleans Pelicans. He's not going anywhere.

(01:30:35):
And you know what else isn't going anywhere tanking. Because
as much as we're seeing the reaction to last night,
look the teams that tank. They didn't get the number
one overall pick, like okay, Memphis got number two. You
know what they've Memphis has done the last two years
they've tanked the New York Dick's hat, the number three picked.

(01:30:59):
You know what, they've one. They've tanked. And they also
didn't just tank to lose games. They tanked to absorb
salaries and shed bad contracts that will be on the
books after next year, after this year. And no, they
didn't get the numbe old pick, but they get three
and they have room for two superstars. Tanking is not
going anywhere because it generally works. It gives you more

(01:31:21):
opportunities to reload and rebuild. Instead of, you know, fighting
for the middle, you're fighting for the top. And as
much as we wanted, we might want to say in
the media that Philadelphia hasn't been a success, that's not true.
They have two of the brightest young stars in the NBA.
They made the playoffs both in the past two years,

(01:31:43):
and they've lost in the second round the playoffs both
in the past two years. I think that's pretty good
considering where they had previously been for the four years beforehand. Alright,
coming up next to the dout gotlip show here on
Fox Sports Radio. Still a bunch to get to get
tank not go anywhere. I understand the teams that had
the worst record didn't get the number one pick. But

(01:32:04):
you know what, that's why they have a lottery. It's
the ALTA. It's the ultimate anti tanking format, and it worked.
We like the thing. It didn't work because there was
there is no conspiracy theory which sends Zion Williamson to
to Nola. But this, this is a lot like Tim

(01:32:24):
Duncan ended up in San Antonio. There was no conspiracy
there because nobody wanted him in San Antonio money, you know,
TV market wise, just like there's no conspiracy here. But
what the lottery is designed to do it did, which
is just because you win the fewest amount of games
doesn't mean you get the number one overall pick. But

(01:32:47):
that doesn't mean that by tanking and losing a bunch
of games you're gonna get a terrible pick either. Rudy Gobert,
we just midness the end of tanking. No, we didn't,
We didn't. Dante Jones joins the show up coming next.
How does he think Zion will do in New Orleans?
Is there any chance island Zion doesn't go? Any chance at?

(01:33:08):
Anthony Davis stays, Plus, what does he think about the
Bucks versus the Raptors tonight. That's next. Be sure to

Doug Gotlip Show rolls on here on Fox Sports Radio.
M m m m m m m m m m.
Dante Jones a long time bro. Of course, you see
him on across our network, Fox Sports One, Fox Sports

(01:33:53):
here on Fox Sports Radio, he joins us. You can
also hear him every Sunday, one o'clock Eastern time. A
long time the legend, Steve Hartman and Dante. I want
to work to the lottery and what you saw last night,
what we'll see tonight. But did you talk to Lebron
about what he thinks about this the coaching change with
the Lakers? Um? I haven't, I haven't. He's excited about

(01:34:16):
just the opportunity and and and just moving forward. And
having some type of direction, has some type of leadership,
having somebody that holds people accountable. Um, he asked me
my opinion, and I can say nothing for positive things
about Bogo because Bobol has been a positive figure for
the Indiana Pacers when I played there, he was a
very good coach guy who catered to the young kids
and tried to it's still as much confident as possible

(01:34:39):
with those guys and help the Scots over achieved. So
I think he's in a in a in a wasn't
a tough situation, but now it's looking like his trending
outwards along with his number four pick. Yeah, I think
it's interesting to see what they do with the number
four pick. Um Zion didn't seem as fired up as
he might have been had he gone to New York.
But you see anyway in which he goes like, no,

(01:34:59):
I'm not doing a orlans thing. He could go back
to school, he could threaten to sit for a year.
He hasn't signed with an agent. Anyway, he pulls an
Eli Manning and forces to move out of New Orleans.
I don't I don't think so, because um, he got
a great guy at that organization trying to turn around. Um,
David Griffin, but I think he was more upset that
it wasn't Atlanta because he's from South Carolina, so I

(01:35:19):
think Atlanta was a little bit more closer to home
to his family. Play I'm more of a medium sized
market where it wasn't too much fresher on him and
not being thrown in the big city. So everybody says
New York, but I thought it was looking like it
was more of Atlanta. Was the place that he thought
he was gonna go. He probably was happy with New
York and now he's in a market just like Atlanta.

(01:35:39):
UM with New Orleans right now, and it's trending upward
because they have a great guy leading the path. Yeah yeah, No, Um,
I think it's gonna be interesting. Okay, So what about
Anthony Davis. Everybody says he still doesn't want to stay.
Should he want to stay? No? I don't think he
should want to stay, because yes, we have David Griffin's
um at the helm of the organ vation and it's

(01:36:00):
going to go in a positive direction from from here
on out. I have no doubt if that. However, it's
gonna take some time. Nothing's done overnight. Um, getting guys
to play there is another thing. But UM, getting that direction,
getting that that that organization in the right direction may
take a little bit of time, and he doesn't have it.
He wants to win right now. He wants to be
a part of something else. Um, he has two opportunities

(01:36:21):
right in front of him with New York and a
lay possibly to can trade their picks and packages to
actually bring something to the organization. I think it would
be the best opportunity for both organizations. Okay, let's get
to what we saw last night. I mean, look, it
was a tall order for Portland's quick turnarounds. Are playing
on Sunday and they just didn't have juice to turn

(01:36:41):
the basketball over, something they don't do. On the other hand,
it's also a bad matchup, like is this sign of
things to come or just one exhausted team playing a
game too soon after a Game seven? I think it
is a bad matchup because number one, they did come
from an exhausting series is but they're bigs are not

(01:37:02):
capable of guarding pick and rolls and guarding that team.
And his cancer has been a big positive for those
guys that the output that he has an offensive engine,
we have to go to drop it to him. But
Golden State is so good defensively is that they can
adjust to that stop in his cancer's touches, but also
put in his cancer in a lot of picking rolls
and wear him out to the point where he's not

(01:37:22):
gonna be a part of this series. So his defensive
deficiency or what's gonna make it tough for those guys
to play in the series. Yeah, no, no question. And
then you know, like I do get what Terry Stott said,
you already said after the game when they asked him
about sinking your big guy, and he was like, Hey,
did you guys watch the Houston game. They doubled and
trapped him. But it's pretty obviously, at least with Cantor

(01:37:44):
sinking him down there, that that ain't gonna work. Yeah,
I would have rather. I would have rather trapped him
and then been aware of his ball, because when you
trap him, he gives the ball up and then it
starts running and roaming, and then that's the heart. That's
the hardest part to guard him, man. But what you're
giving him by not trapping and not showing on picking
rolls is you're giving him a wide open three what
he does the best. At least I would take that

(01:38:07):
out of play. I would try to wear him out,
try to trap them, be aggressive with him because his
conference finals time, so you can be a little bit
more aggressive, a little more contact, and try to wear
him down in that capacity. But doing what they were
doing last night is definitely not gonna work. And its
cancer can't really show on picking rolls and can't come
out that far because it throws their defense all over
and then the ball moving gets into play. But we're

(01:38:28):
not gonna win a shoot out with Steph Curry shoot
Steph Curry and Clay Thompson shoot wide open, uncontested three
at three off the dribble. You're not gonna win that battle. No,
not even not even a little bit. All right, what
about tonight Milwaukee taken on Toronto? Toronto has had another
one extra day and they played at home. But that
was that was an exhausting series and they needed, um,

(01:38:50):
they needed a shooters role that I've I mean, Cameron
Indoor doesn't even give those kind of shooters roles to
let thee done. Um, what do you think? Let's just
start with tonight? Game one is usually the game you
can come in and get a steal, but you gotta
completely rested and healthy Milwaukee club that's got Brogden back,
and you got what would appear to be an exhausted
Toronto team. Any chance to steal on home court tonight,

(01:39:13):
I think they do have a chance because you've got
a bunch of guys who are experienced in this situation.
Kyle Lobbry has been to a conference finals, Marcus Autsman
to a conference finals, has won a championship. So you've
gotta experience bunch over there ready and know what type
of attention and what type of performance is necessary to
win in a hostile environment like game Game one is
gonna be on the road. Guys are prepared, guys are experienced. Um,

(01:39:35):
I think they'll be able to um to build on
that that last series and come out confident and come
out there and try and steal the game. I like
Toronto in this series because over there they don't have
In Milwaukee, they don't have that much experience in these
type of situations. I think this is a good year
for him. I think it's gonna be a seven game series,
but I think I like Toronto. Huh, that would be

(01:39:57):
that I've heard a lot of comparisons with with Kauai
now and I I get the ability to take somebody
out of the game defensively and offensively. I'm I'm a
little which slow your role with the Jordan's stuff. What
are your thoughts on on Kauai and the level he's
taking it to. Um, you know what, I can understand
the Jordan, but not we're looking at Jordan's Most people

(01:40:20):
look at jordan finished product career, like all the accolades
and things like where Jordan got to the at the
beginning of his as his playoff runs his first championship,
Kauai is able to. Kauai is able to defend at
a super high level, which Jordan could as well. He's
good off the ball, He's good on the ball, and
then he's shown that he can get a shot with
the best of them. He doesn't use too many dribbles.

(01:40:41):
He's very efficient, he gets to the basket and he's
willing to take on the challenge. He's not as he
doesn't have the personality or the energy at Jordan's brinks.
But I understand what people are trying to compare him to,
not the Jordan's. The Hall of fame Jordan. We looking
at but a piece of the Jordan legacy at the beginning.
I think if he keeps this up for years to come,
we could have a fairer comparison. But Kauai is showing

(01:41:02):
some signs of of a Jordan comparison because he plays
so well on both ends of the floor. If you
were Kevin Durant, would you want to play with Kyrie
in New York? If it depends on our relationship And
I'm big on chemistry, on relationship on guys that I
think I can trust if they are as friends like
people are trying to say they are, and they want

(01:41:24):
to play together. You only live once, man, and and
you want to take a chance with a guy that
you that really enjoyed being around, because when it comes
to the tough moments, you guys embrace each other and
and fight through all those things. It's hard to come
to work every day with people you don't like and
you don't have respect for and trying to make it work.
That can be a little tough. But if those guys
are really have a great relationship, I think they can

(01:41:45):
build some specially together. I I do too, but it
just it seems like I don't know between both of
their struggles at times answering questions with the media, and
maybe it's changed when they get to pick their team
and they're more comfortable because there is their team. Can
he's kind of he seems to want his own thing,
but it wouldn't be necessarily his own thing. And then look,

(01:42:05):
I think Carrie's as talented as anybody who plays, but
there's something about the way in which he plays which
she struggles to make everybody else feel they kind of
all seem to be waiting around to get to like
it feels like they'll be Okay, you go, then I go,
You go, then I go, And I just don't know
if that wins do you if you if you've got
a firepower like Katie, you go and I go. That
that makes a different type of situation than what he
does in Boston, and it's just a dynamic of those

(01:42:28):
who high power offense, especially in New York City. It
would bring a different vibe. They won't have the free
agency conversation, so that's half of the conversations they don't
want to deal with. But they would have to go
out there, be electric, be something that people want to
see add some pieces in it, and we could be
looking at a special um A team coming to New
York with two guys that are at the top of

(01:42:49):
our our Superstar league. Yeah, it's really really gonna be
interesting to see exactly what happens. Who comes to LA
to play with Lebron? Uh. Um, that's a tough one, right,
So if Kyri turns it down and wants to go
play with k D, you could look at Kimba Walker,
Jimmy Butler. I wouldn't necessarily turn Kauai down. I think
Kauai is gonna look at the best option and see

(01:43:11):
what's available. Because right if l A can turn that
four pick into a D, you really got to look
at it. A D Lebron and Kauai that could bring
some championships for years. And I think with the landscape
is going to be UM if that is, if that
is told before before free agency starts. If if you
know what other stiff another stars there, you know the

(01:43:31):
direction they're going in, I think he could land a
Kimbo Kauai, maybe Kyrie Um. We could be looking at
some special if they take care of business. But before
free agency starts, we'll see great stuff Dante Jones. Check
them out on Fox Sports One and Fox Sports Radio
one o'clock on Sunday's alongside the legend Steve Hartman. Dante,
thanks for joining us. Thank you pleasures mind man, Dante Jones.

(01:43:52):
He does a good job. Good dude, tremendous players. Check out.
That's Fox Sports Radio every Sunday, one o'clock Eastern time
with the legend Steve Harbin. Speaking of legends, Dan Buyers
alongside getting ready for some golf. Although it supposed to
rain in the Southland, so you can't watch it on
TV and then go out and play it tomorrow, Dan,
We'll just be We'll just be slugging now watching some

(01:44:13):
golf and Beth Page it's cold there. Yes, it's gonna
be chilly tomorrow morning as well. And one of the
main discussions leading up to the PGA Championship are the
tea times something that it's going to be an advantage
for those that tea off later in the day Thursday,
and then we'll go off early Friday. Tiger Woods would
not be one of those tts off eastern time tomorrow morning.

(01:44:33):
What why conditions tomorrow morning look to be cold and
rainy and wet, so the conditions seemed to improve throughout
the week. So the worst conditions could be early tomorrow
morning in the way that they stagger tea times. If
you are late on Thursday, you get an early tea
time Friday. So the conditions are what tomorrow morning it

(01:44:56):
could be cold and rainy, so it could make the
course very very long, as if it's not already long enough,
so it won't be it won't be moist on Friday morning.
It's just if it's if it's cold and rainy, you're
just not gonna be able to hit it as far.
Temperatures seem to be increasing as the day goes and
you wouldn't have to deal with the wet stuff later on,
So great that stuff. So plus you know, like when

(01:45:18):
you get up seven o'clock in the morning and her
teeing off, it's obviously gonna be a bit colder than
it is at one or two o'clock. The one thing,
the one thing, And obviously conditions can and we see
this British open all the time, right, conditions first two
days and tea times can can very much determine. On
the other hand, there is something to teaing off early
the first day and late the second day. It gives
you almost gives you, you know, a good three or

(01:45:41):
four hours more recovery time. And and like this is
a really long course. This is a long long walk.
Um So although it will might hurt you in terms
of your score ability and the length of the course,
your body could recover a little have a little bit
more recovery time. There's also the they go off split
t so they'll be taing off the first hole, in

(01:46:03):
the tenth hole, ten, eleven and twelve of our brutes
on Beth Page Black. The other thing about the Open Championship,
if you want to get into Gulf tidbits and notes,
it's it's a full it's a full field a hundred
and fifty or so players. But the but the Open Championship,
because of the longer days, they can always go off
the first tea. They don't have to do split t

(01:46:24):
s like the U S Open does or the PGA Championship.
Instead of going off one and ten like those two
tournaments do, the Open Championship just has everybody go off
the first tea and some don't tee up to like
four thirty in the afternoon. Like when they're playing at St. Andrew's,
but anyway, that's tomorrow. No Tiger ones spotted at Beth Page.
Black today was gonna play in that whole practice round instead,

(01:46:45):
He said it not to and is resting up for
tomorrow's first round, where he will tee off at Eastern
time Thursday morning at eight thirty Eastern time. Tonight, it's
Game one of the Eastern Conference Finals Raptors and Bucks
from Milwaukee. No. Game one of the West Finals went
to the Warriors last night. They didn't have Kevin Durant
and they won't have him for Game two. Chris Haynes
of Yahoo's Sports saying Durant is out for tomorrow's match

(01:47:06):
up against the Blazers because of that strained calf, when
other NBA note the league could be moving up its
moratorium on free agent talks from midnight Eastern on July
one to six o'clock Eastern time on June. According to ESPN,
Jets today fired GM Mike mccagnan. They named head coach
Adam Gaze is the team's interim general manager. Boston Globe
says the Patriots have sign free agent linebacker Jamie Collins,

(01:47:28):
who they traded to Cleveland. In all, the Seahawks agreed
in terms and a deal with quarterback Gino Smith family.
In baseball, Twins held off the Angels today eight to seven,
while the Yankees got two home runs from Glamor Torres.
Gary Sanchez is twelfth of the year. They take game
one of a double header against the O's five to three.
We'll be back to the Doug Gotlib Show in ten seconds.
But first a word from farmers at Farmers Insurance. We

(01:48:11):
on here on Fox Sports Radio. Doug Gotland Show was
brought to you by Discover Card. We treat you like
you treat you. Not sure if this is the way
I would treat Mike mccagnan, but um, what a great
day for Adam Gaze right Like Adam Gaze was in

(01:48:31):
Miami and he's basically a five hundred coach and last
year he didn't have Ryan Tannehill. Most a year year before,
he didn't have Ryan tanny Hill at all. So to
come out of that situation and move to the Jets,
and granted he didn't get to make the entire draft,
he didn't get he greatly disagreed on how much they
paid Levy on Bell, but he basically is going, He's

(01:48:54):
give me the interim GM, which a lot of the
work has done, but that means that he'll have a
big say in picking the next general manager. And Mike
mccagnan fired today. If you're Adam Gates, like you were
in Miami on the hot seat, and now you get
the new job with the talented quarterback, some talented defensive players,
pretty good draft, talented running back, and you're your own

(01:49:17):
you're your own boss. You want to talk about The
Knicks may have been losers last night. Adam Gaze is
the ultimate winner today, the ultimate winner. But let's also
be honest that the process by which the Jets went
through to hire Adam Gaze as their interraim general manager

(01:49:39):
and their head coach, the whole thing is really bizarre, right,
just it's just odd. You know, he wasn't the only
choice for this job. Then he gets the job, and
he had that weird press conference where it looks like
he's looking for a fly. What are you looking at?

(01:50:02):
What are you looking at? And then there were rumors
of some sort of, you know, some sort of intellectual
dysfunction between the two. So new GM and Adam Gaze,
who Adam Gates will hand pick. The new GM will

(01:50:23):
be on a parallel track directly to the owner. Again,
Gaze will not report to the GM who he will
hand pick. How great a gig is this? What a
great gig? I mean, talk about failing up? Holy hell?
Gets fired in Miami, gets a job in the same

(01:50:45):
division with a better young quarterback, and now he's got
a better running back, and he's got a couple of
really talented defensive players. Granted didn't get to make the
whole draft, Granted didn't get to the whole free agency thing.
But that is not a bad gig if you're at
Adam Gaze won the week a basically a coup de toad,

(01:51:11):
which he wins. I don't understand Woody Johnson and the
thinking here of like, let's let the guy go through
free agency where we have all this money to spend,
and go through the NFL draft. But he did end
up with a couple of talented, talented players, Quinn and Williams.
They got which everybody, everybody loves Quinn and Williams, but

(01:51:36):
they signed Levian Bell like that's Mike mcagnus still. So
the beauty to this thing with Adam Gatee the only
downside is he didn't get to make all decisions. But
beauty to it is now everybody knows he didn't make
all decisions. So he's gonna get an even more extended pass.
Weird weird, um what you got there? Rhyme music. So

(01:51:58):
part of what happened with Fyan Bell in Pittsburgh was
he felt disrespected by the long term con contract that
they did offer him. That's why he held out then
refused to play under the franchise tag. So clearly he's about,
you know, getting the proper respect. If you will, any
issue here at play with the report out there now

(01:52:19):
that Gaze didn't want him or want to pay him, Yes,
I'll say this and and as you guys know, um,
I got to do sideline last year for the NFL,
And I'm going to tell you, like to a man,
players really like Adam Gaze. Gaze is like he wasn't
an athlete in college. He was student manager. You guys

(01:52:39):
know this student manager at Michigan State. Like a g
A at Michigan State. It was like he was like
a student assistant. Ever and then the old story goes
this that Nick Saban, who was the coach of Michigan State,
told the staff he was leaving taking the l s
U job. There's a plane waiting on the tarmac. Anybody
on the plane if you want to come with him,
be on the plane. And know everybody's with Bobby Williams. No,

(01:53:01):
because they all thought they were gonna get paid and
they didn't want to go to L s U. They
all stayed. Saban went. Well, the only guy who really
went with him was Adam Gaze, who went. You know,
he found out nobody was going, so he got a
g a position and he said he worked hand in
hand with Saban because Saban he was the only guy
Saben trusted early on because he didn't have his own guys.
He's all his own guys stayed behind um. But if

(01:53:25):
you you you, if you talked to Gates like he's
crazy likable, players really really like him. He just got
a cool vibe to him, and I would guess that
with Levan it will be more about like, hey, this
has nothing to do with you personally, it's just the
idea of signing and running back to that much money.
Like I'm just opposed to it, but it's already done.

(01:53:46):
We're not taking it back. I'm not gonna not use
you because of it. Like let's go, let's roll. It's
all in how the message is sent. And I do
think he's a pretty good messenger. So yes, could there
be There could be, And maybe that's why levant it
away here. But at the end of the day of
Lebon wants to make his money, he's got to show up.
He's got to play for Adam Gaze, and Adam Gaze

(01:54:08):
is the judge, jury, jury, and executioner of whatever sentenced
because he's his own general manager's own president. So a
pretty good day for Adam Gaze. When when we see
Kevin Durant back out in the court, you'll find out
next that Farmers Insurance we know a roof can withstand
a lot, one exception being an airborne car seen it

(01:54:33):
covered it. Dr Farmers, we are Farmers underwritten my Farmers
truck fire insurance exchanges and that affiliates products unavailable in
every state. Doug Alive Show rules on Fox Sports Radio
every day. This time we get you caught up in
as many sports stories as possible. We call it the press.

(01:54:53):
The press, Dan Buyer, what he got. We have got
a huge surprise. No, it's really not. Yeah, who's sports?
Those saying Kevin Durant out for Game two tomorrow against
the Blazers because of his straightened calf. And then the
thing is, um, you know more people are talk to
you like, well, if they're up two games and none,
and he's not gonna play in game three, and if

(01:55:14):
there are three games the one, he's not gonna play
in game four, Like, we may not see Kevin Durant
in the Western Conference Finals. He may may be able
to get back fully fully healthy. So game two might
decide if we do or do not see Kevin Durant.
Doug You touched on this earlier, but it was Mark
Stott of the New York Times saying the Pelicans have
already sold more than three thousand season ticket packages since
winning the NBA Draft lottery last night. Look, I know

(01:55:36):
you're gonna hear people in Colin was like, what Zion
needs to do is go back to school. That threatened
the Loxion is gonna make twenty million dollars off the court, right,
and he's got a great image, Like he's not not
turned down twenty million dollars off the court plus nine
million dollars in contract to go back to Duke because

(01:55:58):
he doesn't want to play in New York ins for
a couple of years. I don't see that happening. Like
it's one thing to turn down a couple of million
dollars to whole the other thing to turn down thirty
million dollars. That ain't happening. He going. My My feelings
on this were I wasn't I don't care what team
you went to. But I told John Ramos this before

(01:56:18):
the show started. My issue with New Orleans winning the
draft lottery was they've had a star in Anthony Davis
the last six or seven years. Like I look at
Memphis at number two. Like for for that team, I
know it's Grindhouse and it was Gassolve. Its just had
their star. It's Nobby get another chance. I kind of
wish Memphis would have had gotten number one. I mean,

(01:56:39):
you could say the same thing about Cleveland, right, like
Cleveland had their star, then they had then they had
the number one pick a couple of times, and they
had Kyrie, they got Anthony Bennett, then they got Wiggins,
then they got Lebron back, like how many chances? Like
I feel bad for Charlotte, like Scharte when when Charlotte
get his stowed, they never get the number one pig.

(01:57:01):
Charlotte's actually been trying to be good and they're just
like they're just that level of crumby to which they're
not really that bad, but they're not really good. Yeah,
I feel worse for Charlotte. The NBA with Honnor Larry Burden,
Magic Johnson with Lifetime Achievement Awards at next month's NBA
Awards show Bird as a player, Johnson as a front

(01:57:23):
office exact. No, I'm just kidding. By the way, isn't
the Hall of Fame the Lifetime Achievement Award? Like I
just I don't know. Didn't you already you had your
number retired? Yeah, youach got statues in front of your buildings. Yeah,
you're also Nasmith Memorial Hall of Famers. Yeah, Like those

(01:57:46):
are all lifetime achievement awards. Like we're just going to
go back to the well and go like, you know what, guys,
let's but that's what it is when you're on the
on the rubber Chicken circuit, that's what you do. Brobn's
running back Kareem Hunt spoke today about what he's betting
going through after videos surfaced of him punching and kicking
a woman last year. Hunt, yes, now a member of
the Bronx. It definitely, uh changed me a lot of

(01:58:08):
the person just helping me, you know, becoming a stronger
person and better in myself and figuring out, you know,
things that I can work on and be better. How
do you explain what happened? I'm trying to move forward
from that and I'm just trying to just focus on,
you know, stand on the right path. Now. That was
just seventeen eighteen seconds or so. Hunt actually met with
the media for eighteen minutes today. He is suspended for

(01:58:30):
the first eight games of the upcoming season. I didn't
know you had to learn to not punch and kick women.
I didn't know. I didn't know there's a course you
had to take. But I do understand that anger management,
controlling your emotions even when pushed, even when you know
awful things like that. There's something you have to learn
to control. But uh, and I meeting with the meeting

(01:58:52):
and it wasn't as confined as other you know, media
things like this have been in the past. But on
the other hand, you know, can you explain what happened?
You can't explain what happened if you just said, like, look,
I lost my cool in the worst possible way, the
worst moment of my life. He did. He did talk

(01:59:12):
about some of that stuff with the media today, talked
about when he saw the video what he felt like,
says he's getting baptized in the near future. It's kind
of a a rebirth for him. I'm paraphrasing what he
what he said today, but those were just some of
the comments from Kareem Hunt. Yeah, look, look I didn't
like it. I know there's a lot of circumstances to

(01:59:33):
it which nobody cares to bring up, and I'm not
gonna bring up. It doesn't matter to me, he doesn't
matter to anybody. But he's gonna get a second chance
and we'll see. The thing about the difference in this
in Tyreek Hill and again, I don't I don't there
there is not the definitive proof of Tyreek Hill. There
is audio tape which is damning. Although there are some
the problem with the Tyreek Hill is, dude, you got

(01:59:55):
kicked out oaklea mistake because this thing you already on probation,
Like what are you doing? Um that Kareem Hunt has
a very very short leash because of what what he did.
Seahawks agreed to terms on a contract with quarterback Geno
Smith today. This was reported earlier in the week that
it was likely going to happen, made official today. He'll
compete against Paxton Lynch for the backup job in Seattle.

(02:00:20):
See Russell Wilson bought his White Mama house. That was nice.
I don't like the idea of buying somebody a house.
How's the very personal thing, right, Like you bought me
a house? Like what if I don't like the layout? Right,
you can't be one of the people Like, yeah, Russell
bought me a house, But I really don't like this neighborhood. Right,
somebody lays down a million dollars in a house in Seattle.

(02:00:41):
He like, yeah, you know, I really didn't want this.
I don't like this neighborhood. You know, I don't like
stuck out I wanted more farmhouse style. Gottlieb officially the
only person in America that wouldn't take a free house.
I didn't say it wouldn't take it, but it's just like, sorry,
somehow found a way to complain about a free house.
I'm just being honest here, right, like somebody I don't

(02:01:02):
get You know, if you get a free car, you
can't complain about it, but a house, the how is
the very personal thing. What if she wanted farmhouse style?
You know what if she wanted farmhouse style and that
one's like Tuscan, I don't know. That's a hard thing
to get over. Bases loaded, two outs, top of the ninth,
Angels Down eight The seven show, Hey Otani at the Plate,

(02:01:23):
Esse sets off Audrey asa left side, the pitch gram
ball up the middle of atreyansa. There Pete feels he
throws BA seven. Sorry, guys, I tried to bring the
dramatics for the angel fans. They fall Twins with twins, Twins,
Twins Twins Radio Network. How about this from Yankees Radio Network?

(02:01:47):
Swung on and enter the air to deep left. It
is high, it is gone. The home run derby continues
labor It's his second of the game. Wow, this is
Glabor Day. No, it's not, but it's not. It's not Glabor.
Torres two runs, Yankees take game one of a double

(02:02:08):
header against the O's five to three. Young guys one
backing out there impressed. That was the press buyer bucks
by how many tonight? I like the Bucks by double
digits tonight? Who was right last night? All of us
all did I but I picked them bigly. Did any
of you guys say it would be close? I don't
think anyone, And it was like seven doesn't even feel

(02:02:29):
that close. I don't think Toronto wins tonight either. This
is not Gotlip Show. Fox Sports Radio
