put their experience in the plan. At Farmers dot Com.
Farmers Well, the Golden State Warriors one again. And here's
what's amazing about it. Um. It's a great quote from
Dreymond Green, who has played his best basketball of the
last two years, last two years. Over the last month,
(01:05):
there's been so much talk about, Oh, they're the Warriors.
Before Kevin got there, they were great, bull we were
damn good. I think we're a very good team who
was tough to beat. I think when Kevin came here,
made us unbeatable. When DeMarcus came here and made people
scratch their head even more, And so we need those
guys next. SERI, he's gonna be tough, and I hope
(01:25):
and pray we can get him back. Durant, by the way,
was averaging thirty four, five and five in the playoffs
before getting hurt. I mean, it's like everybody forgot that
Kevin Rant was far and away the best player on
earth before he got hurt or whatever. That's what we do.
(01:47):
We usually pick up pick sides on the way down.
In this particular case, we're trying to pick sides at
the peak. Only one can get credit. That's what a
mirror or American sports fans basically have to say. We
struggle with the Patriots and whether or not Belichick and
Brady could get along, it could coexist. Well, you know
(02:11):
Brady has never won without Belichick. Well you know Belichick
never won before Brady. Sports are about teams. It's about
coaches elevating players, and players elevating coaches and other guys
knowing their roles and playing at the absolute peak of
their role. Right, Like, I don't know how to break
(02:37):
this to you. But if not for Julian Edelman making
an incredible catch, Tom Brady doesn't have a Super Bowl,
not from Malcolm Butler reading a play which they studied,
he doesn't have another Super Bowl. Like, all of these
things kind of work together. And as much as we
want to give credit and call people the goat or
the best ever or the best currently in the sport,
(03:00):
are I almost feel like we're doing a disservice to
what's an amazing team. Think about what the Warriors went
through in this series. Now, I'll grant you they ran
the benefit of the Trailblazers, who weren't really as they
weren't as good as the Houston Rockets. They weren't. Frankly,
(03:24):
I don't think they're as good as the Oklahoma City Thunder,
but Paul George wasn't healthy. The Thunder, if you remember,
couldn't make a shot in Game one, and they lose
Game two. They get down two games none, and then
all of a sudden they kind of go in the tank.
Even with that, it took a fifty footer alright forty
from Damian Lillard to finally stick a steak in the
(03:46):
heart of the Thunder. Probably a little bit more talented team,
especially without Nurkics playing. So this is what happens in
sports when you have an upset in an earlier round
oftentime times they get to a higher level of competition.
And in this case, because they went through a seven
game series against the Denver Nuggets, they're exhausted, and the Warriors,
(04:10):
in spite of the fact they're without their best player
or still still able to win. But if you think
that the Warriors are as good without Kevin Durant as
they are with Kevin Durant, you're not paying attention to
the simplest part of the series. The Warriors lead for
only eighty three minutes in the series. They trailed for
(04:30):
a hundred and one minutes in the series. That's in
and they won all four games. And that's because they
have that not just the championship pedigree and the competitive greatness,
but they are in fact a team, right, They're a team.
(04:53):
In Game six when Kevin Durant didn't play, Andrea Ago
Dallas started, and Andrea ago Dolla had five threes he
hadn't done so in five years in the game. And
then last night without Iguadala, without DeMarcus Cousins without Kevin
durant and they're down seventeen points. They could have gone away,
but they did not. I'm okay with pointing out Steph
(05:16):
Curry's great. If you didn't know that, why do you
think you want two straight m vps and was the
first ever unanimous m v P in the history of
the NBA. But what should also be pointed out is, hey,
Clay Thompson was amazing. There's a reason that Damian Lillard
and c j Um one of my McCullum struggled in
(05:39):
this series because the Warriors other guards are really really
good defensively. And Draymond Green was amazing. A guy who
couldn't score ten a game if you locked him in
the gym suddenly is making huge threes, recording a triple double.
Kevon Looney, who has to start now when they're down
another guy, he's making plays around the basket. He becomes
(06:02):
a rim protector. Now, I'll spend just two or three
minutes explaining why I believe there's a thirty four and
one record without Kevin durant Um. And this was explained
to me about Lebron James. You see one of the
reasons the Lakers and all of his teams struggle when
(06:25):
and during his first year, is you played differently with
Lebron James than you do with any other player. Like
no one actually argues that Lebron James is great because
you played differently. Because even though usually the record out
of the gate and happened with the heat with the Calves,
with the Lakers in their first year isn't good, and
(06:45):
it's because you have to learn how to play with
Lebron James. And this year it took him a while
to learn how to play with Lebron James, and then
they found a groove, and then he got hurt and
they had to play a different way, and then when
he came back back, they still had to relearn how
to play with Lebron James. The same is true with
Kevin Durant. And if you remember, many of these Warriors
(07:09):
have played with played together before Kevin Durant got there,
so they know how to play. They've learned how to
play with k D, but they also know how to
play without UM. I think that factors into the gaudy record.
I think most of the games that k D sat
were against interior competition. I also believe that UM, and
(07:32):
this is important. When k d doesn't start normally, andre
Iguadala will get to start. When Steph Curry doesn't start,
Quinn Cook gets to start. Who's a better player. It's
not an indictment on Kevin Durant that their thirty four
and one without him. It's more of an indictment on
Quinn Cook, who's replacement for Steph Curry, that their record
(07:54):
is not near like fifty eight and thirty fifty eight
and twenty three or something. Look, last year they throttled,
the throttled the Blazers. This year they trailed the Blazers
and had to find ways to win games. They're better.
Everyone knows they're better. It's not a subtraction by addition.
It's addition by addition. And instead of celebrating a team
(08:17):
who doesn't have three of their top six, because that's
usually how UM Dynasty's end all right, once there's injuries,
that's really what brings down to Dynasty. Instead, they're able
to go into Portland trail most of the game and
come out with an overtime victory. But this is what
we do. We picked Shack or Kobe. We never even
(08:40):
give credit to Phil Jackson. We talk up Mike and
we don't point out Pippin or even the fact he
needed Paxson or cur or b. J. Armstrong to hit
big shots. Derek Fisher, Robert Ory hit huge shots with
the Lakers, but it's like they didn't actually exist. It
(09:00):
was only Shock or Kobe. And then when when Kobe
won it without Shack, it was well, Kobe won it
without Shack. Yeah, well he also he had Robert Rory. Again,
he had Derek Fisher, who you know, had the weird
couple of years of the Warriors and then the Jazz.
Do people even remember that Pau Gasol who was supposed
to be soft like Pallakasov, Run Our Test, Crazy, Run
(09:21):
Our Test, Metal world piece build him out in game seven.
We make it about these one individual guys instead of
about what it takes to win a championship. Oftentimes, is
your weakest link to pull you through. It's Ali at
the freethrom line in the Hoosier's making that one underhanded shot.
That's the sport. And as much as you could say
(09:46):
football is the ultimate team game, when you have one
week link in basketball, they're gonna get exposed more readily
than one week Lincoln football. You know, if you're not
a Burger as a wide receiver, they still send you
out into a pattern. You're gonna still take a defender
away from the box you are. You may not take
two away, but you'll at least take one away. In basketball,
(10:09):
it's really really hard to hide that week link. They're
gonna come at you and defensively, and they're gonna make
you make shots and make you do something you're not
comfortable doing offensively. But we we are in this weird
stretch where we don't want to get when Steve Kerr
never gets any credit. They're beautifully coached team. You don't
think he has to make adjustments when they don't have
(10:30):
Kevin Durant. And by the way, some of not having
Kevin Durant or not having one starter forces them to
start Kevan Luney, who's been really good defensively and finishing
around the rim, and that in turn makes Portland's match
up with their big guys instead of going to a
small line up. But I would point out that I
(10:50):
think Draymond is, you know true, Damian Lillard is a
poor man's version of Steph more of a shooters score,
then he is nearly as creative, and I don't think
he's as good or as electric a shooter scorer, and
that got proven. But the biggest difference between the two
(11:11):
teams is Portland's does not have a Draymond and that
was peque Draymond Green. And the reason you recognize Raymond
Green is because they're a real team. When you need
to step up and play, he has played. But I
don't know how we've gotten this place in society where
only one guy can get credit. Everybody can't get credit,
(11:35):
and that feels to me very much like people who
aren't team people and don't understand that you need everybody
in order to succeed. Um Ethan Strouss gonna join me
up coming next. He's of course writing a book on
this year's Golden State Warriors. Kind of a surprise chapter
what happened with first Kevin Durant at the end of
(11:57):
the Clippers series and started the Rocket series and then
now another surprise chapter with the injury to Kevin Rant
and now the team has responded since that injury. Plus
who would they prefer to see in the NBA NBA
Finals the Raptors or the bucks Eaton Strouss joins Us
coming next. Be sure to catch live editions of the

Fox Sports Radio. Ton of Things to at two in
(13:00):
the NBA. The reaction from around the league to what
Magic Johnson did, I'll just say I I speak to
executives in several professional sports and everyone I talked to
was like, I can't believe that Magic Johnson did yesterday.
Like it's one thing to write a book a couple
of years after the fact. Hey, here's how it really
(13:21):
went down. But the day they're announcing the next head
coach after you just resigned under no pressure from a job,
and the first time you speak out is on a
national network. And the way in which he's he painted
the picture of a complete dumpster fire, naming names people
he deemed inept. Oh more on that to come. Ethan
(13:46):
Strouss joins us from the Athletic Ethan, I do want
to ask, obviously, I want to ask you about the Warriors.
Uh Ethan covers the Warriors for the and the NBA
for the Athletic fallm on Twitter at Sherwood Strauss and
he's got a great article a triumph for the Warriors.
They triumph for Steve Kurrl want to get to but
what was your reaction in Portland yesterday to um everything
(14:07):
that happened with the Lakers. I was talking about it
with some players pregame in the locker room, and there's
just a lot of confusion. I was talking to Boget.
Boget's always laughing at the situation. He was on the
Lakers for a little spell. He feels as though he
was misled by Rob Blinka in that whole journey and
so for him, it's just a lot of comedy. And
(14:30):
I asked him what needs to be done, and he said,
there's just almost too much to even begin discussing it.
Um From his perspective, I don't think he knew Genie
that well. But I look, I think sometimes we say
that it's you don't want to hands on owner. You
don't want an owner who's meddling, right, People think that.
People say that, especially people in basketball, because if you're
(14:51):
a GM, you want to be left alone to run things.
But rarely do people make the point that you don't
want a week owner either. You don't want an owner
who represents something of a power vacuum that might be
the worst of all worlds. That's when people start backstabbing
each other. That's when people start knifing each other as
they try to fill the vacuum and establish authority when
(15:14):
authority is a little bit vague. And it does seem
overall that the Lakers are in that situation. Yeah, it's
it's it's going to be fascinating to see if this
causes free agents to stay away, or maybe it doesn't.
I don't maybe it doesn't matter. It's still l a.
It's still Lebron, It's still the Lakers. Ethan Strouss joining us.
Um they roll out yesterday, not just for that Durant
(15:36):
and people have forgotten there without Cousins right um. And
now they're without without Andrea Guadala. That is that that
is not a lineup against a playoff team like the
Portland Trailblazers on the road that would normally be successful.
What do you make of their ability to come back
yet again from a sizeable deficit. I think it speaks
(15:59):
so how this particular core, the whole is often greater
than the some of its parts. That they play really
well together, They're more motivated. I think missing Andre that's huge,
and I think that they performed maybe even better than
I would have thought if you look at the numbers.
They tend to really struggle when he is off the floor.
But it also speaks to the greatness of Steph Curry
(16:20):
and Draymond Green principally I mean Draymond. He said in
an article by Marcus Thompson that he thinks he might
be the greatest defensive player of all time. I don't know,
maybe some of your listeners would be offended by that.
And they would have their own names and their own guys.
But it's not a crazy statement. He is the defining
defender of this era. And his ability to switch on
(16:43):
everybody from point guards to centers. That's a new thing.
It's for the style of this particular kind of defense.
I don't know how to compare it to I don't
know Bill Russell or I would say, I would say Rodman.
It was was that. That was what Rodman could do,
been could play in this era defensively. The problem with
(17:03):
Robman is he he he would only have to be
a role guy and a reboundary would not like he'd
at the end of his crew. He never shot the basketball.
He'd have to be your your center, and you have
to surround him all with shooters. But but he's the
Rodman of this era. The differences all of a sudden,
a guy who he couldn't score if you locked him
in the gym most of this season, and people forget
last season. It was supposedly his shoulder, maybe it was
(17:24):
his head, maybe both. He couldn't make a shot last offseason,
they didn't guard him at all, and now of a sudden,
he's making shots when left open. Oh, it's huge. And
I thought it was going to be a problem earlier
this season when he wasn't making shots and teams were
completely valuing off of him. Uh. He has gone to
soul cycle. He loves soul cycle. He's lost twenty three
pounds in season. Uh. And he's a new guy. After
(17:48):
all this talk that he was on the decline and
on the back side, suddenly he looks like he is
in peak form. And so that's been huge. And I
think with Steph people talk about it, but I don't
think they totally get it. A lot of what makes
him great, it's the stuff that the fan isn't watching.
It's what's happening off the ball. That's what's unique about him.
You've had a lot of players in the history of
(18:10):
the NBA who are air a plus on the ball
of scores, and you've had some players who were a
plus off the ball, and he's both. He's both and
he and he can pass and he can pass and
the mass and and he he liked most of those
off the ball guys. He never tires, he doesn't get
he doesn't get tired, and you know, he does take
(18:30):
some breaks down defense. You have to take a couple
of breaks, but he smartly does it. Um but no,
it's like and you know, it's interesting Ethan. His game
is much that way. When he has the ball. Some
guys go right well, some guys go left well. Some
guys shoot off the dribble, some guys shoot off the catch.
Hey does it all right, like like it it used
(18:51):
to be. If he's going with his left hand and
he's still kind of his way going to the left hand,
he's got that step back right and if he goes
to his right, it's he shoots off a us over which,
for my money, I was always told you like you
never shoot up the heat takes things. His shots that
he takes, we were always told they're low percentage shots,
i e. Bad shots, And he makes such a high
(19:11):
percentage of him that you're worried about him going left,
you're worried him getting about him going right. He's a
good enough and clever enough finisher and then he can pass. Now, look,
he'll turn it over a bunch, he'll miss some finishes,
he'll go through some straight he'll shoot some air balls.
In a game, he'll shoot like two air balls and
it just has no effect on there. There's some bad
there too, but it's the ability to do all of
(19:31):
it together. He's got a little breadth far where there's
ress that's indivisible from the greatness. Like you, you're gonna
get some careless You're gonna get some careless plays that
will make you tear your hair out. But that is
part and parcel of the confidence and the free and
easy manner by which he does what he does. You
can't separate the two. It's really, really um you know,
(19:55):
it's crazy. I thought no one would ever get less
credit for coaching Champ the Chip teams than Phil Jackson
until I until Steve kerk came along. Right, Like, no
one says like, hey, you know, Steve Kerr's a hell
of a coach. You're around this team? What how how
is he? How is he important to what they've been
(20:16):
able to do? I think he gets a lot of
the big things right, I think, and we've talked about
it on your show. Uh. He has an understanding of
what wins the playoff series that I believe is true
that he is observed from having played with Phil Jackson
and Greg Popovich, this idea of how to win the
war of attrition. It's not necessarily about playing all of
(20:38):
your guys, your top five guys forty nine minutes and
shrinking your rotation to seven. That might seem like the
best analytical choice, but human beings get tired, and they
especially get tired in the playoffs, and so Kerr believes
in having these guys rely on one another. That's why
he wants the ball moving. He wants a division of
labor to be well distribute. You did so everybody is involved,
(21:02):
but the star is not getting completely exhausted, and so
at the end of it all, like like like Damian Lillard.
Uh So, at the end of it all, he hopes
to get the series to a point where the other
team just falls down. And I would submit, yes, there
are mistakes. Coaches make them. He should not have put
Festus as zeal in in Game seven NBA Finals, But
(21:25):
I would submit that the guy who keeps winning might
know a thing or two about it. It's it's it's
it's interesting. I actually offered this up last year. I said, like,
people do they do realize that James Harden scoring a
bunch of points in the first half an important game
is actually a bad thing. And you know, and you
look at game six this year. I don't know how
(21:45):
many people he had fourteen At the half he was
rolling along and dominating against the backups of the Golden
State Warriors. Meanwhile, because step Cruz in foul trouble and
because the rotations, their guys were fresh and rested, and
you need that to make those ridiculous jump shots and
those big second half runs. Like there's a little bit
of ropadub sometimes now they play there definitely is and
(22:05):
you saw it play out again and again. Curse said
it in the article. I wrote, hey, subscribe to the
athletic everybody, I gotta get the plug in. Um. But
he said it wasn't a coincidence that they kept making
these runs in the second half because they were going
to the ten man rotation to the eleven man rotation.
And the confidence he has to try some of the
stuff that we would get him killed if it doesn't
(22:26):
work out. Um, it's it's you have to have some
true capital to do that. You do not see first
year coaches doing the kind of stuff that Kurd does,
where he just Jacob Evans has not played a meaningful
minute and months. He was not good during the NBA season,
and with the good Alla out near the end of
the half. He just throws rookie Jacob Evans out there
(22:48):
to Carden Damian Lillard for three minutes. He just does
that kind of stuff, and it it tends to work,
even if it seems like in the moment that it won't.
UM if you can Ethan Strouss owning us fallm on
Twitter at Sherwood Strauss Reda's work in the athletic if
you can, um, can you help people understand why they
have such a ridiculous record when Kevin Durant is out
(23:12):
and yet it doesn't mean that they're actually better without
Kevin Durant. It's a good question because better basketball is
not linear. It's not linear necessarily. There are matchups. There
is a series in which they cannot have Kevin Durant
and them channeling this old way of doing things against
a team that might have a lesser defense, they might
(23:33):
even look better than if they had them right, But
if they go up against the Milwaukee Bucks with their physicality,
with their height, uh, they are short on guys who
can potentially match that, and Kevin Durant can. So I
think it's a little bit matchup dependent, but you know
it is fair to wonder. I think we do this
basketball conventional wisdom that more of a great thing is
(23:55):
always great, and it's not necessarily that we think back
to Steve Are his bulls and we think back to
you mentioned Dennis Robbin, right, you mentioned Dennis Robin. That's
that that gives me an idea with that team that
Bowls seem had been better if instead of Dennis Robin
you had a Michael Jordan's cloth on it. No, I
(24:16):
don't think they would be Michael Jordan's greatest player in
the history of the world. At the same time, you
needed Dennis Rodman to fulfill the role that he filled,
to guard the players he guarded, to snatch up fifteen
rebounds a game. You know, Michael Jordan cloone wasn't going
to do that. You know, it's sometimes a little bit
like a hat on a hat. And that's not to
say that Kevin Durant makes the Warriors worse, especially when
(24:36):
they're not replacing him with uh yeah, with another guy, right,
But it wouldn't be the craziest thing if at the
end of this solve they did get a competent guy
in that slot and he did his job and he
did the Scott work, he did the role player work,
that they might look a little better. That's not the
craziest thing in the world. Yeah, I think it can
(24:57):
look better, it can be more fun, but it doesn't
ne certainly mean it is better because people so quickly
have forgotten how they how they marched on through the field.
I think sometimes they get bored too, because they fall
back on like, well, hey, Kevin can bail us out
or Steph can bail us out, and so there isn't
the attention to detail. That is the thing that's not
Kevin's fault, but is real. It's real that there are
(25:20):
no expectations that can possibly be overcome when he's on
the roster and when he's in the game. There were
a lot of people, maybe the conventional wisdom going into
Game six against the Rockets, who thought the Warriors were
not only going to lose that game, but then they
were going to lose the series. Vegas had the Rockets
as a seven point favorite that night, meaning that Vegas
(25:42):
thought that that Rockets team as constructed was four points
better than the Warriors team without Durant, so that gave
them a mountain to climb that gave them some noise
to prevail over and that celebration. Even though it was
a second round series victory, it seemed like a championship.
It's not Kevin Durant's fault that the expectations are where
(26:03):
they are, but that's just the nature of human beings.
It's it reminds you of Jurassic Park. T Rex doesn't
want to be fed. T Rex wants to hunt, and
when Kevin Durant isn't on the team, all these guys
they get to hunt. Yeah. No, it's a it's a
it's a great point. Um Ethan Shrouds joining us in
the Doug Gottlib Show. Kevin Durant will play when I can't.
(26:27):
I can't predict that. I can't predict that. I you know,
he's been back in the Bay Area, right, we've been
up in in Portland's so I don't even see the
guy walking around. Letn't let alone gonna get an update.
But you know, calf injuries are tricky, They're really tricky. Uh.
Not only that, I think it's gonna be really hard
for him if he comes back into a series against
(26:48):
the Bucks. Because even if I think the Warriors could
really benefit from having him. That's a tough series for
for him. He did not look offensively sharp in the
two games against the Bucks. Chris Middleton is a good
defensive player, and they didn't put Janice onto Heavin Duran
Kevin Dran, who has had a lifetime of only going
(27:08):
against players who were either smaller or slower than he is. Uh,
they didn't put your honis on him except in the
switch and when you would switch onto him. Janice got
the better of that matchup. And I think if those
two teams play each other, you're gonna see a lot
more of that. That is gonna be a significant challenge
if Katie comes back off an injury, and it should
be kept in mind. If he's struggling at all, if
(27:29):
people are ripping him, they should maybe keep that context
in mind. H DeMarcus Cousins, does he play in the finals? Hm? Hmmm.
I wouldn't say in a meaningful moment. That's my best guest.
I could see him getting out into the floor. I
don't think it would be in a in a high
leverage situation. The new article is a triumph for the Warriors,
(27:53):
a triumph for Steve Kerr. He's ethan Strouse, he writes
for the Athletic You can subscribe to that. Of course
you can fall on Twitter at Sherwood Strouse ethan great stuff.
As always talked to you during the finals. Get you

Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. He's a guy everyone's
talked about. Obviously. He's been a head coach previously with
the New Orleans Pelicans. He's now the new head coach
of the Phoenix Suns. He's Monnie Williams. He joins us
(31:09):
on the Doug Gottler Show on Fox Sports Radio. Money.
How are you? I'm doing well man, Thank you for
having me. It has been a good day. It's been
a kind of a wild wild ride to getting getting
another head shot shot at at being a head coach? Um.
What's the year been like with the seventies sixers? You know,
(31:30):
only there, only there for a year, but part of
a team that kind of was in transition in mid year,
even though there's so much bright hope, so much town
on that roster. What was it like to be part
of this this team? It was great for me. I'm
totally totally thankful to see Brett and Mr Harris and
Elton for what they did for me. I was thrown
(31:54):
right in the fire and Brett allowed me to essentially
be a head coach in Philly, and so with all
the transition and trades and different situations that came up,
it allowed me to jump right back into the fire
again after being in management for two years. And so
that experience, um was profound for me and and pretty
(32:19):
much helped me transition back into this particular seat as
a head coach. Money Williams, the new head coach the
Phoenix Suns, joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. UM, it's a it's always a difficult
time to You're trying to focus on your team, on
your job, and not the next team, right, and yet
everybody wants to know and teams want to talk with you.
(32:40):
What was that like to process it that it might
have to be great right to get interviews and to
be offered at least just this job, maybe some others
as well. But how did you manage? Uh? Hows you
as you? My son always talked about it, Dad, when
I said I was full, my dessert sections not full.
You have different sections of your brain that you allowed
to come that. Yeah, I mean this is what we
(33:02):
all work for. Um. If you can't multitask, then you're
gonna have a tough time being in the n B. A.
It doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be in a
position to get a head job, but it could be
dealing with stuff on your team, dealing with your family, UM,
dealing with your own personal stuff. So from that standpoint,
it wasn't um a huge distraction. Um. Nonetheless, we were
(33:28):
in the playoffs, and I had both sides. The sons
were telling me to just focus on the Sixers, and
the Sixers, to their credit, they were always telling me
do what you gotta do. We understand it. We got
you that type of thing. And I was telling both
sides like, I'm good, like I can do both. Um.
(33:48):
My family didn't suffer at all. It was a great
experience and I learned a ton and UH, really thankful
for all of it. Um. But again that this is
what we we pray for. This is one of the
things that we hope we have a chance to experience. UM.
You did talk with the Lakers. Why why Phoenix, right,
(34:10):
Because it didn't seem to get to the point to
where it was one or the other. You seem to
choose Phoenix. Why would you choose the Sons? You know, Doug,
it was really the Son's hired me. Um. The Lakers,
my talks with them, Um, we had really good talks.
I spent some time with miss bus. I have a
(34:30):
ton of respect for her. She's an elegant, thoughtful lady. Um.
But the Son's offered me an opportunity, UM, And so
I don't see it the same way as everyone else. UM,
I just feel like this situation fit me. And when
you get a chance to be one of thirty in
the n B A UM, that's a huge, uh, not
(34:53):
only opportunity, but um blessing. And so for me, it
wasn't about choosing one or the other. It just boiled
down to the fact that the son's offered me the job.
You've been through a lot. I know most people remember
when you tragically lost your wife in the car crash,
but a lot of people have forgotten, like you you
missed a good amount of time in college with the
(35:14):
heart condition that you came back from. Like you're somebody
who been through a lot personally and you find a
way to to to persevere. What does it mean for
you to get this second chance? A lot of a
lot of guys don't get a second opportunity you have.
What what's it? What's it mean to you? It's it's
huge for me, d UM. I never felt like I
(35:34):
was entitled to have another shot. Um, even when people
would talk about me being a head coach, I just
didn't think that it was just a given. And so
for me to be in this position, UM it means
a lot, not only for me but for my family. UM.
These jobs are are hard to get, the responsibilities are
(35:54):
high level, and UM, I just feel like to do
it two times. UM, I'm more than than I'm blessed
way beyond what I deserve. And so because of that,
I want to do everything I can to help this
organization continue to move in the right uh way direction?
Have you? Um? And so I you know again, I
(36:18):
don't feel like I was entitled. I just felt blessed
that I was recognized, um the way that I was,
and now I want to take advantage of it. How
how are you different from the last time around? Like
you've gone you're you know, obviously you've been on the
staff in Oklahoma City, you're in management for two years.
You've got a chance to see the league and a
team from that perspective. Now you're on a coaching staff
(36:40):
with a complete, completely different team. You inherit this team
that is super talented. Obviously everyone knows you need a
point guard and you need some veteran leadership, some experience,
but there it's not devoid of talent. Um. How are
you different from when you were in New Orleans? I'm
not as much of a duface as I was in
New Orleans. UM, probably way more patient than I was
(37:03):
in New Orleans. UM. I hope I'm a better listener.
I hope that being around Pop and r C and
the coaches there, UM, USA basketball, being around Brett and
you know, the situation where I had to take a
step away from UH coaching and basketball, that probably affected
(37:25):
me more than anything. You know, I've learned that I
can't do it all on my own, and UM, allowing
people to help me UM has been huge for my growth.
And so I hope that all of that translates into
success for the Suns. And so anytime you get a
chance to be in those different organizations in different situations,
(37:48):
you hope that you glean from that and that it
translates to success, not just in basketball, but personally. I
gotta ask you in funds and also a couple of
the guys you're you're people that anyone who comes into
context like, man, that guy is a better guy than
I am. UM. Everybody raves about the type of person
you are, type of human being you are, How do
(38:09):
you like Look, there's a newer age of of NBA
guys that are on social media. You know it's about
likes and sometimes more than about about wins. How how
do you help them learn kind of your ways of
the force if you will well to be straight? Do
you I'm just boring? Um? I really am. I don't.
(38:30):
I don't consider myself anywhere near what people say about me. Um,
my kids could tell you stories, and um, people that
know me know that I'm not all that, and and
hopefully that kind of transparency about who I really am
as an impact impact on our team and different people
(38:50):
that I encounter. Um, God makes me look better than
I deserve, and um, he knocks it out of the
park and I get to run the basis. And that
that's how I lived my life. Try to keep as
simple as I can, but I know I'm not all
that man. All right, well, listen, good luck finding a
point guard. I don't need a point guard. But you
got some bucket getters. You got some bucket getters, You
(39:11):
got a big fella, and you got a draft pick,
and you got some cash space. You got a lot
of things going for you. And of course I have
your beautiful family and and and your health. Thanks so
much for joining us. Wish you nothing but the best
and appreciate you joining us. Take care of man, all right,
pleasure is mine. That's that's Montie Williams. That's one of
those guys I know five or six people in basketball
(39:32):
and TV that you're like, yeah, I just that guy
is just a better guy than me. And that's that's
Montie Williams. It makes it you're like, man, I feel better. Um,
all right, So we got a bunch of things to
get to. By the way, last time, New Orleans is
really good. He was their coach. It was a lot
like the Sacramento situation right where this year where that's
(39:54):
the Sacramento coach staff. Actually, my man, Brian Gates, was
on the Sacramento staff and he's like, man, this happened
in Orleans. We had our best year in like twenty years,
and we got fired. That's why. And what you saw
last night or yesterday with the Magic Johnson what I
thought polluting the well of the Lakers. I know you
(40:15):
think that's only the Lakers that are like that, but
there's lots of franchises that are like that. The Sons
have gone through a bunch of coaches as well. It's
been the sky to me. The NBA is the greatest
bad job ever for coaches, the greatest because you have
you stay in the greatest hotels, you play, you coach
the greatest players in unbelievable venues. The players make all
(40:37):
the shots when they're open for the most part, and
yet there's other parts to it which make it really hard.
So we'll see if the Suns can turn that thing around.
Don't feel bad for Lebron James. He actually did this
to himself. What it is? Find out next. Fox Sports

(41:22):
great day. We still can. We're still reacting to what
we saw in ESPN studios yesterday and in El Segundo
at the Lakers facility yesterday. In subsequent order, Magic Johnson
arguably the greatest Laker of all time, which is funny
because the great Lakers have had Wilt, Kareem, Kobe, shack Uh,
(41:50):
Jerry freaking West, Elgin freaking Baylor, George freaking Mike In,
It's Smoosh, freaking Parker, Joe, Chris freaking mem Hey, don't
kid on chrismm. He was a beast in college. Right,
They've had some dudes now, and I could easily I
(42:13):
can make the argument that Magic Johnson the greatest Laker
of all time, which makes what he did yesterday even
more sinister. In their time of great need, through after
the sixth worst years, worst years in the history consecutively
(42:34):
of the franchise. Six years, they have the worst record
in the NBA of the last five years. It's crazy, um.
In their time of despair, Magic Johnson did what you're
(42:54):
never supposed to do. Well, actually, he did what people
are he's do. You know, they always say like, hey,
no disrespect. What's the next thing coming out of their mouth?
Something disrespectful? Right, Listen, I'm not a racist, but something
race is just coming out. Listen, no offense, but something
(43:17):
offensive is gonna So when he says like I just
want to thank Genie Buss. I love Genie Buss, Like
like he just started like oh oh oh. He calls
Rob Blink backstabber several times by name, and then points
out the ineptitude of other people who the rest of
(43:38):
the world don't even know exists that operate within the
Lakers franchise, putting by his estimation facts to the general
belief that it's a dysfunctional group. You might have thought
it was a dumpster fire, but now you know it's
(43:58):
a dumpster fire than listen. I rarely agree with crazy
Rob Parker, but he said in The Odd Couple, I
was driving home yesterday and he's like, hey, I would
take down that statue out in front, And you know what,
I think you're right. You did harm to the franchise
on national Television's not like you told one guy. It's
not like you went up it'd be bad enough. You
(44:20):
went up and told Kawhi Leonard, you know any part
of that, it's a mess. But he basically said, you
don't want any part of that. It's a mess to
everybody who's out there in the greatest free agent summer
of the NBA. And it wasn't like they fired him.
Nobody fired him, and he might have he might have
(44:44):
believed that he didn't have as much power as he
wanted to have, but he was in fact given clearance
to fire Luke Walton, and Luke Walton was fired as
he wanted, and all the pics and all the trades
and the things that wanted to happen like he didn't
there there might have been more checks and balances than
he felt comfortable. And Magic Johnson pulled his own rip chord.
(45:09):
He did the I'm out, and I know that some
of you are sitting there going. Lebron's kind of a
sympathetic figure here. He was just trying to get some
shots up yesterday. In the background, meanwhile, they're introducing Frank Vogel.
Lebron's blood on his hands are a kidding look. The
(45:34):
first mistake made in the Lebron James era was made
by Magic Johnson when he shows up at Lebron's home
without Rob Polinka as general manager and without his head coach,
Luke Walton. That that was his His pitch was I
got this, which of course means that Luke's not his
(45:56):
guy and Rob doesn't have ultimate power ultimate say he's
just a guy. Don't worry about it. I got it.
But Lebron could have at that point in time, goes, hey,
you know, I love to meet Luke. He lived down
the street. Why don't you text him nine o'clock. I'm
(46:18):
sure he's up right. Rob may live in Newport Beach,
but hell, he bought the Mamba shopper. Be up here
and fire that thing up. Be up here in fifteen minutes.
Even in a car, he'd be here in an hour.
Magic was there for three hours. Lebron got on a
plane shortly thereafter, if you remember, and flew to Europe. Magic,
after putting together the team that he thought could compete
(46:40):
with the Warriors, got on the yacht. Was gone for
five weeks, and then yesterday Lebron had a chance to
take some sort of ownership of the situation, to do
the pee Wee Reese. Al Right, do you guys know
the pee Wee re story? First ever black player in
(47:01):
baseball was Jackie Robinson. Right, did you guys know if
Jackie Robinson hit oh ninety one is last year at
u c L A crazy un I mean, so many
unbelievable stories. The famous peewee re story is Jackie Robinson's
first year was playing obviously for the Brooklyn Dodgers. They're
(47:23):
playing in Cincinnati. Have you ever been to Cincinnati? Now,
you know, Cincinnati is borders Kentucky. You know there's some
rednecks in Cincinnati. There's rednecks and idiots everywhere. Not every
redneck is a racist. Hey, not every person who lives
in the North uring a liberal state is not a
racist racist or everywhere, especially if you go back to
that era. But it was Cincinnati was seen as a tough,
(47:46):
you know, tough place to play, and they were given
Jackie Robinson the business and Peewee Reese while they're warming up,
goes over, puts his arm around Jackie Robinson, completely diffusing
the situation. He's with me and among the things that
(48:06):
Lebron has done wrong during his first year, obviously he
wants attention. That's why he comes out when he's injured.
He comes out after the game has already begun. Waits
till there's a lull in the crowd and then Lebron
James come walking out. Why so he can get his
own ovations attention. That's why there's the social media post,
(48:29):
That's why there's the I'll take questions on Twitter like hey,
I'm still Lebron, Hey I'm still here. Like he likes attention,
which is why he was there yesterday. Just so happened
to get I'm just getting some shots up while they're
doing a press conference. Really, but he could have done
the pee wee reese while go over to Frank Vogan
Frank Vogels doing a press conference. Are up there, They're sweating.
(48:52):
Rob Polinka's dodging bullets left and right. Frank Vogels sitting
up there going like, just please ask me a question,
Please ask me a question. But he didn't take a
list of Bill oram who covers the Lakers for the
(49:14):
Athletic when he joined us yesterday. We know who Lebron
expected to be coaching him next season, and it was
ty Lou and Frank Vogo was probably gonna be part
of that as an assistant or have that. There was
definitely a movement in that direction. But for but for
Lebron's guy to basically look at the Lakers and say, no,
I don't want any of that. You guys are too disrespectful.
Two nuts um has to color the way Lebron looks
(49:35):
at this team and this organization. You know, he kind
of dipped his toe in today, like you said, by
coming to Frank Vogel's introductory press confidence. But there was
no there was no walking pass the media and giving
us thumbs up and saying that he was you know,
he loved Frank. He didn't stop buying give Frank vogo
a hug that we saw at least. So if you know,
that question is going to linger until we hear from
Lebron or Lebron Um comes out and said something. But
(49:58):
you go back to last year, Lebron would used to
give Luke Walton that vote of confidence that everyone was
looking for all seasons long. I mean, look, he had
a second chance here, he had a second opportunity and
and even a vote of confidence. Like we don't hold
it to that. We don't what happens in sports us
(50:20):
when the guy gets to vote of confidence, he gets
like two weeks later rights. It's called the dreaded vote
of confidence for a reason. But you're Lebron James. It's
already gone bad with one coach. He got three years
left in a contract with the Lakers. You're on your
second coach. You have no president. That magic Johnson just
napalm the place and you can't just go up to
(50:41):
All you gotta do is hop on the back of
the stage and go like, hey, fellas, just once you
know I'm here for Frank. You know, you could say
something funny like you can't beat him, joined him, I'm Frank,
ha ha ha. And if you think, well, he wouldn't
know how to answer those questions. Have you ever listened
to Lebron James? Look, I did the NBA draft for
(51:02):
I think twelve years, twelve years nine ESPN that we
did special shows for at other times, and we actually
did it one year here. But I've been to twelve
NBA drafts, talked to all those players. The single best interview,
the guy who had the greatest control over a room
(51:24):
any time I'd ever done it, was a high school
kid from Akron, Ohio named Lebron James. He was eighteen
years old. And you're like, I don't know that guy's
shoes squeaked differently than everybody else's, his answers are different,
the suit fits him different, the different tone to his voice,
different confidence. He might use the wrong syntax, but there
(51:44):
was still an elegance to the way in which he
handled himself with the media. You mean to tell me
that he couldn't hop up there see say something funny,
even a little bit awkward, put his arm around Frank
and do the pee wee Reese. He's with me. I'm
really sorry. I don't feel sorry for him. Dude. You
did this to yourself and you're continuing to create and
(52:05):
foster an environment where no one knows what you want
and if you don't get what you want, we feel
like you shut down on us, which is gonna cause
people to go the other way. Missed opportunity, but not
a chance in my mind to fill any sympathy for
(52:25):
Lebron James. Frank gi Solo joins the show of Coming
Next national columnists for the New York Daily News. He
also see him on Around the Horn and for The
Athletic I'm gonna ask Frank what is his reaction to
what we saw in l a and in Bristol yesterday?
Plus does he actually think the Warriors are better without
(52:48):
Steph Curry? And uh Milwaukee or Toronto? Who posts a
greater threat to the two time defending champions. That's next.

Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio on things I don't
need that I might buy. What do you guys think
about a ski ball machine? The micarage you guys think,
I have a pinball machine. It's pretty cool. Uh, it
needs it was all redone and then we moved. It
(53:54):
needs a little tinkering, but it's very cool. Um getting
a ping pong ping pong table, and I'm thinking about
getting ski ball. The only problem with ski ball is like,
what do you actually win? If you don't win tickets?
I don't know. Frank II Solo joins us in the
athletic Are you a big ski ball guy from back
in the day? You more foodsball? What is your carnival
(54:14):
game of choice? By the way, No, I loved like
those old fashioned timball machines. I was, I have one.
I have one. You have like an act like a
real one, like a real pinball, Yeah, real one. It's uh,
it's actually the most famous maker of pinball machines was
from Cleveland, Ohio. It was D. Gottlieb Incorporated. Uh, there's
there's no relation to me at all. No, no, no
family relations at all. So I have a I have
(54:38):
a Gottlieb pinball machine. That's nice. I like a good
pit mall machine. I was pretty good at that as
a kid back when I played this. Sometimes it's like
only a dime to play, and then of course you
want to feel like a quarter. You are you are
old that used to be a You don't don't ever
tell anybody used to be a dime to make a
phone call, because then you know what I say to you.
What is what does a pay phone? Frank Solo joining
us from a payphone somewhere in New York City. It's
(54:58):
Doug Gotli show. You're on Fox or Tradio. What was
your reaction to Magic going on first taken napalming the Lakers. Yeah,
I mean, you know, some of the things that he
said was you know that to me that everyone's to
blame for it. But it's tough for me to hear
Magic Johnson talk about how much she loves the Lakers.
If you love the Lakers that much, like, do you
really do that? Seems like you know that that's that's
(55:20):
what That's what kind of got to me a little bit.
You know, you called Genie Buss your sister. That's how
you treat your sister. And then the whole thing starts
with Genie Buss agreeing to have Magic Johnson be the
team president. Now he was up front with her. He said,
I'm basically gonna be doing it part time, and she
agrees to it. It's one of the premier jobs in sports,
not just the NBA, and you're giving it to someone
who basically is telling you he wants it to be
(55:41):
a part time job. He just wants to be connected.
He wanted to be connected to the organization in some form.
They shouldn't have made him the team president. It was
a job he didn't want you have to really work at.
That's not true, though, he said, like his whole thing
was I wanted to make all the decisions. They're like, okay,
like you get around. I'm not saying there's not a
contradict in there. Right, there's other people like, hey, let
(56:01):
me help you out. You know, we actually know that
this might like then he got mad when other people
got to see at the table because they were around.
He wasn't round around. I mean, look, there's two parts
to it, which are really bothers. In the first you
point out both of them. Frank I sold the joining
us from the like. The first is like, dude, if
you really like the Lakers, why would you show everybody
how dysfunctional it is when this is the biggest free
(56:22):
agenciason you've ever had. Why did you ever do that?
They didn't fire you, you walked away. Secondly, like, don't
tell me that you wanted power. And then you also
said you weren't gonna work full time. And by the way,
the job that he has, like he's like, well, my company,
who didn't run itself? You give motivational speeches, you know,
it's not like I think you're doing you know, you know,
(56:44):
like you're pharmaceutical repping, Like, hey, I gotta go. There's
a surgery somewhere Ontario. Like no, yeah, Like like I was,
like I was saying, you know, he owns the Starbucks.
You would have thought, like a cappuccino machine breaks somewhere
in Santa Mark and he had to leave and go
work on It was it was magic. He just wanted
to beat Magic Johnson. He didn't want to put in
the work. And I have no idea what kind of
(57:05):
job Rob Blinka does. It doesn't seem like a lot
of people trust Rout Bilinka. But put yourself in his
position where you're going there every day, you're involved in
every meeting, and all of a sudden, Magic kind of
just parachutes in. He was just fired the head coach,
and they're all sitting and go, well, where have you
been for like the last three weeks. We've had meetings,
We've done this. And it was funny too, because the
big issue with Magic Johnson was what people are talking
about in my back up, I'm not working that hard.
(57:26):
I'm not there, all right, all right. We really acknowledged
people were saying that behind your back. Was it true though,
yes or no, that that you're that you haven't been
working a lot and that you um weren't around, because
come on, Doug, you know this. You can't do those
jobs part time. Phil Jacksons had to pull that in
New York. It doesn't work that way, Phil Jackson. Is
a is A is a perfect perfect parallel, perfect parallel.
(57:49):
And and here's the other thing, Like, look, Magic Johnson
one and he was a great player, and he's my
favorite Laker ever, Okay, but he won the genetic lot
When you're six ft nine in basketba all, he hit
the genetic lottery. Now you're you're you're bigger and more
athletic than of the human beings on the face of
this earth. And then when you're a six ft nine
(58:09):
point guard, like, you're better. You're bigger and stronger than
of the point guards playing in professional basketball. When you
go to a job like president, eight billion people can
literally do your job. It opens up a huge field
of people. And the ones that are the best at
it are the ones that, yes, you have basketball acumen,
but you have to work harder. And he just didn't
(58:30):
work hard enough. Yeah, And so he wants to be
Magic Johnson. So when he goes on the Jimmy Kimmel's show,
he's Magic Johnson. And then he's mentioning Paul George's name
and they're getting fine because he's not following the temper rules,
which which he never did the whole time he was
working at He goes on First Take yesterday because he
wants to settle a score throughout Polinka, which is fun.
You want to name names, knock yourself out. It's great,
(58:52):
it's great for us people in the business. We can
talk about it, but you're not helping. If you do
care about the Lakers, you're not helping out the Laker print.
Like he said, they're going into the biggest offseason probably
for them in the last twenty years. Is that helping
or hurting matters? And you can tell you can see
how conflicted Lebron was because on the one hand, Lebron
is thinking, if I don't show up at this press conference,
(59:12):
then everyone is gonna say I don't support the coach.
But I'm gonna show up and I'm not going to
talk because I don't want to make because I know
a question is gonna get asked he's gonna get asked
about Magic Johnson and Rob Polink and he doesn't want
to get in the middle of that. So the whole
thing right now is really messed up. But if you're
Rob Polinka, how are you gonna take yourself out of this?
Like trying to get free agents? And know, by the way,
Magic didn't get the biggest free agent last year, which
(59:34):
was Lebron. He certainly deserved credit for that, but they also,
you know, they didn't even get a meeting with Paul George.
There are other guys that they that they missed out
on Franks hold of joining us in the Doug Gotlip
Show on Fox Sports. Right, alright, let's get to what
we saw last night in Portland. Is it an indictment
of the Trailblazers that they couldn't even get a game
from the Warriors and they lead this series hundred and
(59:56):
one minutes, whereas the Warriors only lead in the series
eighty three minutes, and yet they didn't take a game
off the Warriors. Yeah, they really let one get away
in Game two. I mean, come on, Game two, the
up seventeen then you're at home, you're up eighteen points.
In Game three, seventeen points in Game four, and you
can't get one of those games. And I thought late,
you know, their offense, you know, nobody was moving. It
(01:00:19):
was all isolation. The better team, the more mentally tough team,
the more experienced team won in those games. And I mean,
Draymond Green, Steph Curry off the charts, the way they
playing now, bout the way that Like Looney played, and
even Quinn Cook last night. Steve Kerr got so much
out of his players. And and my big thing is,
you know, for a couple of years now and Damian
(01:00:40):
Lillard kind of became a lot better than last year.
And he's been great this year. I'm not gonna knock him,
but it kind of was a well, he's better than
Steph Curry. Put him on the Warriors with Kevin Durant.
You watch what the difference will be. Well, all these
guys got that chance. You know, James Harden got the
chance this year, and certainly Damian Lillard. Steph Curry is
better than all of them. He's better than Kenny Irving,
he's better than Russell Westbrook, all these cards that we
(01:01:00):
hear about all over the league. You just spec in
Steph Curry Steph Curry plays with great players. They've won
the last five games, like Kevin Durant. You tell me
the playoff team. You think the Bucks are winning five
straight playoff games that you're honest. Same thing with Toronto
and Kauai. I think Portland's winning five straight playoff game
without Damian Lillard. It's just a different level player Steff Curry.
So it's it's great for him because it seemed like
(01:01:22):
he was slipping a little bit just in terms of
even recognition, and now it's like he's back on the
mountain top. Yeah, and and and maybe that actually speaks
more of the type of person he is that he
invited Kevin Durant to his team, he won, and he
has celebrated him as the best player in the in
the game to sacrifice here ego and then when called upon,
be able to step up to the table. I also think, look,
Draymond Green has taking his game back up to a
(01:01:44):
really high level, and he wasn't always playing at that level.
I wouldn't even wouldn't put that on Steph Curry, wouldn't
put that on Kevin Durant. I would put it on uh,
you know, and Draymond he's making shots, and he's in
better shape, and he's playing more active and he looks
like the guy who people thought could be a Hall
of Aime a couple of years ago. Yeah, his fitness
is great. I mean, look how quick is He's constantly
(01:02:05):
moving out on the court. And to his credit, he
acknowledged and I guess he said his mother and his
fiancee would give him a hard time about it. Finally
kind of dawned on him, Why am I wasting so
much energy arguing with the referees after every single call?
And if you notice, really in this series, he didn't
do that much. He was just playing. He was he
was terrific out there. But you know, both ends of
(01:02:25):
the court clearly you know a great leader, and you
can tell they're motivated by the fact that Kevin Durant
isn't there. They want to go back to kind of
like having it be their team again like it was
before he arrived. And when people say, well, it's just
like it was before he got there. Remember they did
have Harrison Barnes. I know, Harrison Barnes isn't a an
All Star player, but he was a pretty good player
for them back then, for them to win a game
(01:02:46):
without on the road, without it with Doalins, especially with
Kevin Durant. But I said this, and without de Marcus Cousins, Well, well,
who would you rather have? Mooney or DeMarcus Cousins? If
you're the Warriors right now with the team that they have,
I would actually rather have tomorrow uh Kevon Looney just
because because the defensive end right like he and and
and one of the things that things that changes and
(01:03:07):
should be pointed out when you take Kevin Durant off
that team is they have to play Looney more, have
to play their big guys more, and that makes the
other team had to play their big guy and that
creates the mismatches that helps Steph Curry. So there's some
other parts to it, but it is I would take
Looney because because of how much uh DeMarcus Cousins hurts
them at the defensive end. It seems like when you
(01:03:28):
watch Looney play, First of all, he plays so well
with Draymond Green, his stat line seems to be the
same every game. He's like four or five, of course
twelve points he gets time. It's like if you if
you had every role player in the NBA, say fill
on an essay and tell me what your job description is.
It's like he knows his job description better than anyone else.
Everything that he does on the court, he fits in
(01:03:49):
perfectly with that team. And you said it before about
Steph Curry, the one he was like willing to allow
it to be like kind of Kevin Durant show. And
I think the maturity of Steph Curry and Clay Thompson
has been a big thing that's kept this thing going
in Golden State. Doug Gallup Shore, you're on Fox Sports Radio.
That's the voice of Frank I Sola. Frank get a
chance to see the Bucks against the Raptors, and um, look,
(01:04:13):
Kauai obviously is the real deal, but he's not a
great pastor. And that feels like that's kind of finally
gotten exposed at this level. Am I overreacting to the
way in which at times he's playing or the Bucks
have made him look? Well? I think it's a lot
of it has to do with the Bucks. And I
also think for him, especially after that game, something in
(01:04:33):
Philadelphia want to shoot the ball. Maybe he doesn't trust
his teammates as maybe he should, because they're just completely
riding his back up, look at the last two home
games that they had there, the thirty nine shots that
he took, including the great shot at the end in
game seven, and then of course Game three the other night,
but he was getting done on the defensive end to meet.
Game three was more about Janice, you know, you know,
(01:04:54):
for him to play that way, I was thinking, and
I understand. He had twenty three rebounds. Could that have
been one of the worst f games a guy who's
going to be an m v P has ever played.
I mean, he did shoot an air He was two
for seven from the free throw line, including an air ball. Well,
that's why, that's why tonight is going to be super interesting,
right is um does he does he have the yips
(01:05:14):
at the free tow line? Does it carry over or
is he just you know, one game and he's able
to process it and forget it. I mean, I'll say
this about like Steph Curry, he fired up like two
air balls in Game three, but doesn't bother him, like
he just comes back. Now, it's a different a shooter's mentality,
completely different mentality. But that's really the kind of the
challenge here tonight for you, honest, And that's why to
(01:05:34):
Layton games with him in a close game, you can't
give up dunks and layups to him. You have to
found him and make him earn it at the free
throw line. I give him credit for this. He was
having an awful game, but he still found ways to contribute.
He did up the twenty three rebounds and the seven assists,
but that that was a disappointing performance room because that
game was there for the taking. I mean, look at this,
Look at the shooting from Meritage, Bledsoe, Middleton, and the
(01:05:58):
Honest in that game. Those guys were terrible and the
game was overtime. So maybe maybe that's a good sign
for the Milwaukee That's what Four of the five starters
were awful. Yep. No. Dan Buyer, who does our updates
and has his own show on the weekends. He's a
big Bucks fan. That's what he said. He's like, look,
we almost won the game, and look at how awful
our best players was. He also is a wee a
week guy. Frank I sold the covers of the NBA

Let's get you, Isaac Lowenkron. Other things going on in

(01:06:41):
head coach of the Phoenix Suns, being on with you
a short time ago, and you asked him about, among
other things, the conversations that he had with the Los
Angeles Lakers before taking the Sun's job. Really, the Sun's
hired me the Lakers my talks with them, we had
really good talks. I spent some time with miss bus.
(01:07:02):
I have a ton of respect for her. She's an elegant,
thoughtful lady. Um, but the Son's offered me an opportunity.
I don't see it the same way as everyone else. UM,
I just feel like this situation fit me. One of
William's new players, DeAndre Ayton, was named to the NBA's
All Rookie First Team today along with Marvin Bagley, Luca
(01:07:23):
don Chech, Jaren Jackson, and Trey Young. So the All
Rookie First team consists of the top five picks of
the draft. The last time that that happened, the All
Rookie team consisting of each of the top five picks
in the draft the eighty five season with a Chimla Jouan,
Sam Booie, Michael Jordan's, Sam Perkins, and Charles Barkley. In

(01:08:48):
we had Monty Williams on at the end of the
first hour, we covered up something we normally do at
the end the first hour, which is called game time. Okay,
this is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Hi
Zac lowin kron Though you could have presumably played let's
make a deal with Monty, but instead, right now we'll
(01:09:10):
be playing this. So yesterday you discussed the possibility of
Peyton Manning becoming the next general manager of the Jets, saying, well,
it would be a great fit. You've heard his ultimate
goals to own an NFL team. Well, who owns the chief?
Owns owns the slap shot? Oh? Yeah, the Johnstown Chiefs, Right,
(01:09:31):
Charleston Chiefs? Okay, right, who owns the chief? Who owns
the Chiefs? Who? Who did in the movie? Uh, nobody
actually knew who owned the Chiefs? Oh it was like
a mystery owner. All right, Paul, great movie, by the way,
Paul Newman, the Hanson Brothers. Bob Costas began his career
as an announcer in the league in which the Chiefs
(01:09:54):
were in. Yeah. The same year Bob Costas began his
career him that league. Yeah, he said he was almost
killed by one of the players when he stole his
newspaper from him, and Costas said, don't feel bad, I
can teach you how to read. And the guy almost
robbed us. One of the great sportscasters of all time. Yeah,
Costa said, the guy who was last in the league
(01:10:16):
in that league in penalty minutes would have led the NFL.
But I digress. Former culture receiver, a guy who knows
Peyton very well, Reggie Wayne, told NFL Network about peyton
general manager. Absolutely not. You think Peyton Manning would give
an owner an opportunity to fire him or have a
head coach backstab him and throw shade and get him fired.
What I do see him doing is being an owner. So, Doug,
(01:10:38):
what are the chances Peyton ends up owning an NFL team?
Was that your answer? Um? That might have spoken volumes? Well,
he here's the thing. This is really important because Kevin
Durant has his own TV show and he's like, I
want to own an NBA team, and Lebron James said
they want to own NBA team. And I do think
(01:11:00):
Ron and Kevin Durant, Ron especially could get there financially.
Do you understand how much it actually cost to truly
own a team? Like Grant Hill is technically an owner
of the Atlanta Hawks, but he doesn't really he's not.
He's not the majority owner, right, And I think he
had to throw in like a hundred and fifty million
(01:11:22):
or something like that. That's a lot of money like
this is. And it's not the old days with the
Frank McCourt days where you can put it up on credit.
Like you're talking about real cash. Of NBA teams are
all worth, you know, in the two billion plus range
outside of the major markets. And the NFL teams are
are worth you know, sometimes twice that, let alone the Jets. UM.
(01:11:46):
I do think Peyton has real money. Obviously he'd have
real investors, um. And if there's a guy that could
do it, he'd be the guy. So yeah, But but
all these other guys like, yeah, I want to own
a team like you, you don't have to be rich.
You gotta be wealthy to own a team. That's a
great point because just when you throw out those numbers,
I calculated one hundred fifty million out of two billion
(01:12:09):
dollars is seven point five percent. So I think the
closest Peyton Manning could do. I don't know what's what's
his buddy Papa John's net worth these days. Maybe partner
with him and a few other people and then be
the managing general partner. Look, he owns a bunch of
those Papa John's, which you know they obviously that their
stocks gone in the tank, but there's still those are
still valuable kind of enterprises whatever. Um. But even if
(01:12:32):
you're worth say you're worth fillion dollars, you're not gonna
spend all five hundred million dollars to own a team.
Like that's not the way it works. You know, you
gotta you'd have to sell off assets. You can't just
like leverage them and and like, well, you know, if
the team fails, you can just take my Papa John's things.
Like No, that's not the way it works. You gotta
have the real assets, like real financial windfalls. So I
(01:12:55):
would guess he'd have to throw three million into a
pot and then get a bunch of other investors didn't
have that real money and be so. I think it
could happen, but it's a lot of harder nowadays than
anyone would lead you to believe. Meanwhile, one of his
old nemessies, the New England Patriots, have reportedly agreed to
a two year extension with Super Bowl m VP Julian Edelman.
(01:13:18):
He turns thirty three tomorrow, the new deal would be
throughe So, what are the chances that Julian Edelman plays
for another NFL team before he retires? Zero zero zero.
I think this is a take me to retirement sort
of deal. He saw what happened to Wes Welker, and
Julian Eman wants that wants to finish Patriot. TMZ Sports

Cowboys executive vice president Steven Jones said this latest incident
will not have an impact on their future contract negotiations

He just basically said that excuse me that what happened
(01:14:22):

he's telling the truth. I don't think. But he just

show on Fox Sports Radio or Fox Sports on Don't
we call it? And Fox say, uh, this was Rob Parker.
Crazy Uncle. Rob Parker who says outlandish things, the same
Rob Parker who calls Tom Brady the luckiest quarterback of
all time, lucky, luckiest of all time, right the low.
(01:16:11):
That's what he says. So usually I am vehemently opposed
to playing anything Rob Parker says without saying. Rob Parker
is in fact crazy until I heard him say this yesterday.
But if you really love the organization, I really want
to help it. What he did today was not helping.
He heard he heard it UH severely and because of that,
(01:16:32):
I'm serious when I say this. If I'm the Lakers,
Magic Johnson from here on now, not and not in,
not forever, but indefinitely, he's posada non grata. We don't want,
we don't want magic around. Magic is not gonna be
invited to any events. I mean, this is magic, I understand,
(01:16:52):
But he's not bigger than Yes, I do, nobody's bigger
than the organization. The other voice you heard is that
of Cris Brush. That show starts at four Pacific Coast
time seven o'clock Easian time. You can download and listen
to the uh listen to the podcast and iTunes wherever
you get podcasts. But he's right, like, at what point
is organization do you go? You can't do that. I look,
(01:17:16):
I would have given Shack a statue when he goes
in place with the Boston Celtics. You just don't go
do that, but they did. All right, you play for
the Celtics, it's when you're on the ring chase at
the end. Fine, But after after stabbing Jim Buss in
the back on National TV basically calling him an idiot
and saying I want to run the team, get in
(01:17:37):
the job that you hadn't earned. You could have hired
people to do the things that you didn't want to do,
but you didn't. You wanted to make the decisions you did,
and you ran the thing a muck and your name
which has won you battle after battle in Los Angeles
and even nationwide, and business couldn't get you even a
discussion with Paul George in the off season. The team
(01:18:01):
goes south. You don't enjoy the process. You weren't having
any fun anymore. You couldn't tweet about players. This is
these are his words. You stole the spotlight from the
rest of the team by without telling anybody, not telling anybody,
resigning before the last game, which they just screw up
the game. But also look, the Lakers had approved his
(01:18:24):
desire to fire Luke Walton. He was gonna do so
they were gonna have exit interviews. They didn't have exit
interviews because there was no coach. There was no magic around.
There was complete dysfunction. And then on top of all
of that, after having issues with trying to find the
next head coach, you get up on the top rope
(01:18:46):
and the day they're gonna announce and welcome in the
new head coach the Lakers, Frank Vogel, you're gonna jump
off that top rope and body slab Rob Polinka, who
he didn't really have a choice. You know, I actually
had too, Joe. He could have gone low road and
go like, yeah, I said magic wasn't working that hardam
surprised you heard it because he was not for hair,
(01:19:06):
but he didn't. He took the high road. Like you
say you love the Lakers, and then you say these
awful things about the Lakers talking about the family. Well,
you know, the two brothers, I was in charge of
them and they were fighting for more power. It doesn't
matter if it's true. You don't say that you wanted
(01:19:29):
autonomous power, which you didn't totally have, but you also
didn't do the job, so you weren't prepared. You're making
decisions that you didn't have all the information you needed,
but forget about all that going on National TV Stephen A.
Smith and telling him all of what goes on behind
(01:19:51):
the walls of like what are you doing? Look, if
I were I worked at two other media or organizations
and I don't have a ton of dirt, but I
got some, I know that if I shared that dirt,
if I just completely pete all over CBS or ESPN,
(01:20:13):
I wouldn't be welcome back then, even as a friend
of court, just to come back in and see the
old people whatever. You don't do that and to a
place that has his number in the rafters and a
statue out in front. I could completely agree with Rob Parker,
you're not welcome here. If nothing else, we gotta cool
down a little bit. Because you were the one who resigned.
(01:20:37):
We allowed you to go away. By the way, even
Rob Polinko was like, we just talked two days ago.
None of this came up. Genie Buss has talked to
him on the phone, had dinner with him, and none
of this came up. They were clearly caught by surprised.
I'd be surprised too if my greatest player ever, who
we had just put in charge we gave him a
chance to be the head coach. He sucked at that.
(01:20:58):
Then we gave me a chance to be the president.
He was been good at it. We never talked about
that publicly, and publicly you can you display us as
some sort of dumpster fire with idiots running around people
with no basket, black men making basketball and said, what
are you doing? Stay away? I agree with Rob Parker,
(01:21:20):
friends like that. If that's your brother, as he says
that Genie Buss's sister, who needs enemies? Is it Steph
Curry or Kevin Durant's team and who cares? Fox Sports

when Ennis Cantor was the starting big guy for the Trailblazers,
or it was Myers Leonard. So when you but what
happens is when you take a starter off the team,
it's not just that it elevates the backup to a starter.
It elevates the third string essentially to being a backup.
And and when you take Kevin Durant off the floor,

they basically played everybody on their roster except Iguadala, Kevin
Durant and DeMarcus Cousins who are out with injuries. And
(01:23:57):
while you still have Steph and Clay as starters, and
you have Sean Livingston for limited minutes, now of a sudden,
you're playing other guys. And when you play those other
guys in the second quarter and at the start of
the fourth quarter, they obviously didn't take Steff out, you're
gonna see a sizeable drop off. And their gamble and
(01:24:19):
the gamble worked is okay, we may be down seventeen
eighteen points, but we'll have a fresh arrested Steph Curry
when we need him most, and we'll have a fresh
arrested Draymond Green we needed the most. We'll have a
fresh arrested Clay Thompson when we need him the most.
And they made it work. But instead of dividing the team,
(01:24:45):
let's give credit words due. Draymond has been far healthier
and frankly, far better than he's been at any point
in time in the last two years. There's also I've
heard this well, Steph Curry's points are more impactful. Look,
threes are more impactful because they're worth more points than
(01:25:05):
two's are. If we're gonna celebrate anybody in addition to
Steph Curry, let's celebrate the three point shot because it
can make up a deficit with Steph and Clay at
a much more rapid rate and Draymond Green last night
than you could without the three point shot. So I
(01:25:28):
look at it, and I just I almost get appalled
by the whole thing that we do. I get that
we want to give the right amount of credit. I
get that we want to celebrate Steph Curry's greatness. He's great.
You know, the team collectively made twelve three pointers, shot
thirty nine of them. And as much as Steph was
(01:25:51):
amazing eleven of twenty five, you still eleven and twenty
five not great numbers. Seven or sixteen is spectacular from three,
eight of nine from the free throw line, and I
almost I don't even remember when he missed the free throw,
Plus he had thirteen rebounds, and then Draymond made that
one big three eighteen fourteen eleven. Some of this is
(01:26:11):
out of necessity. They had to touch the ball a lot.
They had to play a lot of minutes. And when
you touched the ball a lot and play a lot
of minutes to move the basketball, you're going to create
more offense, get more opportunities for points and assists. But
can't we just celebrate that Steph Curry is great and
Kevin Durant's great and when they come together, like there
(01:26:35):
is a certain you can appreciate this the five stones
right there that they almost is the five Stones, the
Hampton five. When they come together, it does feel invincible.
But there's something about the four stones or three stones
that we should remember. By the way, Ramost, do you
(01:26:57):
know all the five stones were the five stones from
from Endgame and from Avengers? What it was the previous Avengers?
I know there's a timestone. Uh. I think that's the
only one I remember. The one that was a green one.
That was the one doctor Strange had. It was right, Yeah,
(01:27:21):
you haven't seen the movie? Have you? Have you seen
either of the movies? Umry music? I saw the Uh Okay,
So there's the space stone that's blue, there's the reality
stone that's red. Alters what your reality is what's the
death one. There's the power Stone that's purple, there's the
mindstone that's yellow, there's the Timestone that's green, the soul
(01:27:44):
stone is yep. So there's actually six infinity stones, which
is pretty much what it's like with the Golden State Warriors.
Right Hampton five plus she we will we DeMarcus Cousins
right now, We'll put Steve Kerr in there. But the
crazy thing is like, it's not like when you have
(01:28:06):
all six stones together, it's invincible. Snap your fingers and
half the teams disappear. But if you have just three
of the stones, you still have three of the stones.
I can't believe we're so underrated Steph Curry, Like, when
did we underrate Steph Curry? He won two m v ps,
He was the unanimous m v P. Like you may
(01:28:30):
have mentally underrated him, none of us did. Like you
didn't know he could go crazy and drop thirty seven
in a heartbeat, of course you did. You didn't know
that Clay could carry in a game six, of course
you did. And Draymond Draymond Green has been But I
don't know why we have to give just one person credit.
(01:28:52):
Why do we have to do that? What? Why? Why
do we do that? Sometimes in a movie, it's like, um,
what's your favorite movie? Ramost you are a movie? Are sinophile? Wow?
Star Wars is my favorite movie? Stars the original Star Wars.
Who's the best character? Han Solo? Okay, Now, if you
(01:29:16):
take Luke out, and I don't actually think that hammil
was very good in that movie, but he was supposed
to be kind of whiny and he pulled it off.
But like if you pull any of the other characters,
it's still a good movie, but it's not as good
a movie. Um. But again, if you pulled Luke Skywalker off,
(01:29:39):
you know, or if you put you changed his character,
minimized his character greatly, because again it's not like you're
pulling you're pulling Kevin Durant off. But you still have
five players, so something else fills in for him. If
you minimize his character and everyone else had a bigger role,
it could still be a hell of a movie. But
(01:30:01):
when you have Luke, it's you know, I mean of
the character when when you were a kid that you
used to play as Luke Skywalker, do you have to
play as Han Solo? I was Darth Vader, Darth Vader.
My favorite characters Han solo, which is the question you ask, correct,
But Darth Vader was obviously to me the star of
the movie. Yeah, so I guess now the question is
(01:30:21):
is it Steph's team or is it Kevin Durant's team?
And it's interesting because I do feel like it's Steph's team,
but it's Kevin Durant's game. Does that make any sense?
Like before every game they gather around Kevin Durant like
he is of the Stones, like he's the most powerful
(01:30:42):
of the Stones, but all the other Stones have an
immense amount of power in their own right, in their
own realm. It should be pointed out that KD is
not just an incredible score. He can make threes. He's
a really good ball handler. He's a very good rebounder,
and he's actually become a really good defender on two levels.
(01:31:03):
Out in the floor looking into James Harden, he's a
pretty good rim protector. Like he helps you all over
the basketball floor. But we're so infatuated with the ball
of movement and the running around, the catching and the
shooting and the crazy threes that we've lost sight of. Hey,
those things are great, and they can't help you win.
But you know there was a reason they're down seventeen,
(01:31:23):
eighteen and seventeen in the last three games against Portland
and against really really good teams. Great teams can't get
down seventeen, eighteen and seventeen and expect to win against Portland,
you can because Poland is just a bad version of you.
They don't have a Draymond Like I would point out
(01:31:43):
that I think that what's missing in discussion is how
good Draymond has been, how good Looney has been. But
Myers Leonard had some great games and his cancer can score,
Looney can be. What what they don't have is they
did not have a Draymond Green. And then I think
Steph is a little bit better than Damian Lillard, and
(01:32:06):
I think Clay is a little bit better than C
Jim mccaull. You both are perennial All Stars against sometimes
All Star and you know, borderline All Star and C
Jim mccaull, And that is the difference, and you see
it play out over four games. But in spite of
(01:32:27):
the fact that I believe and I think most people believe,
Steph Curry is better than Lillard and Clay is better
than c J, even though all four are great basketball players.
In spite of the fact that they're better, they were
still down seventeen, eighteen and seventeen in the last three
games for a reason. Whether it's championship fortitude, a little
bit of Steve Kerr, the fact that they allowed themselves
(01:32:52):
to get down so they could rest their starters and
get to their bench, whatever it is, it allowed them
to come back and win all three games and a
here to be the potential favorite to an NBA championship,
even though they don't have two of their five starters.
But we don't have to give the one person credit.
Star Wars wasn't a one person movie. There ain't no
(01:33:15):
one man bands. Who's your favorite Beatle? John? Everybody's favorite beatle?
Ringo was like nobody's saying, right, nobody actually liked I
think I think mine was Paul. I enjoyed Paul, but
John obviously was I considered the leader of the Beatles, right, Okay,
so John was the leader of the Beatles, but Paul
(01:33:39):
was the star of the Beatles. It's a great that's
a good analogy. Yes, So there you go. So Steph
is the leader whereas Kat is the star or Stadie
is Katie is the talent? We're okay with this music?
Do you like that? Analogy? Is another analogy we can?
I think I think that makes Quinn cook the ring
(01:34:01):
just no, Rob Climman, that is is ring is um
is yoko on no rich climate, rich climate yoko. He
may be the one that breaks up the Beatles. The
Raiders have had themselves in Antonio Brown problem already found out.
(01:34:22):
Find out why next. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Doug Dot Leaps Show weekdays at noon eastern
three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio app. At Farmer's Insurance, we know the sound
of a perfect hot air balloon landing and a lesson
perfect one covered dcor Farmers. We are farmers underwritten my
(01:34:45):
Farmers Truck Fire Insurance exchange that affiliates products un available

dealer price, Liz price, an invoice price. True car shows
what other people paid for the car you want. You
can recognize a good price when you're ready to buy
a new or used car. Visit True Car and then
a way more confident car buying experience. So I was
in Um, where was it? I landed in New York.
(01:35:06):
This is right around Christmas time to do it. I
was in d C. Excuse me. I landed in d C.
And I was doing a Georgetown game, this year's Georgetown
versus s m U. I think I told you this
story Ramo's, but it's I like to take red eyes. Um.
It allows me to not miss radio shows and not
miss things at home. And yes, I miss out on
(01:35:27):
some sleep, but I have plenty of time when I
die to catch up on my rest. So um, and
I have the ability to get on a plane and
I'm out glass of wine and I'm gone and I
don't even finish the glass of wine. Usually I don't
know what happens to it, but something happens to it,
and it's not there when I get up. So I
(01:35:49):
wake up and I'm getting my stuff and the guy
says Doug Gottlip, and I said yes, And you know,
it's one of those sometimes was like, have you ever
had this? When you're really tired, you feel like is
my eye not opening? I need to go see a doctor.
So I got a game to call in a couple
(01:36:09):
of hours, and I'm just worried my eyes, like and
forget about how I look like, yeah, man, how are you? Hey?
Can I tell you something? I was like, well, sure,
I get you know what I'm gonna do. Put my
hands off your ound. You did something, You've done something
on radio a couple of times, and I actually have
used it. I was like, football picks, they're pretty good. Noope, said, uh,
(01:36:33):
you talked about around Christmas time, how you called. You've
called people and apologized or kind of you know, gone
back over if you treated somebody differently than you wanted
to treat him bad or whatever, and you've kind of
made amends. And I said, I've done that. I said,
I did that. Didn't you do it with your girlfriend?
(01:36:55):
I was like, yeah, I actually did in my high
school girlfriend. And hey, I been married or whatever, and
I just and I just at one point in time,
I said like, hey, you know what, like I wasn't
always the best guy in the world, and there's a
lot of reasons behind it. It doesn't really matter. All
you felt was the brunt of it. Sorry, you know,
it doesn't mean I want to get back together with him.
(01:37:17):
I got my wife, I got my kids all good.
You get your wife here, guy, I just want you
to know I'm sorry I was a jerk that one
time or those two times whatever. And the guy said,
I actually did that with an old college girlfriend and
we're really good friends. Now I have a wife, I
have kids, this, that, but blah blah blah, like no way, sure,
(01:37:41):
I feel like Ben Roethlisberger is kind of doing it.
Ben Roethlisberger earlier today, I lacked in leadership because that's
my job as a leader of this team to get
us to the playoffs. I'm gonna need to focus and
refocus my energy on time. How can I be better
to get us back to the playoffs. This was yesterday
(01:38:01):
on KDKA in Pittsburgh on Antonio Brown. I took some
heat and deservedly so for some of those comments on
that show, especially towards him. I generally feel bad about that.
I'm sorry. Did I uh, Did I go too far
after that Denver game? Probably? Antonio Brown responded on Twitter
to face. Then there's this Raiders wide receiver Antonio Brown
(01:38:25):
acquired didn't trade this offseason following the drama field ending
to his nine year tenure with the Pittsburgh Steelers. Was
not the Raiders opening o t a practice on Tuesday,
and and again, this doesn't mean that he's not going
to be successful as a raider, but every opportunity you
have to be around your teammates, to be around your quarterback,
(01:38:48):
to get a chance to know them, and for you
to for them to get a chance to know you. Like,
I think it's really important. We all have quirks. We
all have quirks. My quirk which music knows like, I'll
text him or call him at bizarre hours, have a thought.
And then I don't like to come and sit necessarily
(01:39:09):
in the studio when I'm prepping. I like to go
there's a coffee shop. There's a couple of coffee shops
I like around here. Sometimes I go to there's a
whole foods around here, and I'll get a meal or
I'll get a coffee, and I like. I like because
I drive a pretty good amount. I like there to
be no sound at all in my ear. I don't
necessarily like people talking to me. It's not because I
(01:39:31):
don't like people talking to me. It's just I've been
listening usually to other radio shows and talk to people
on the phone in a car ride, and so before
I talk him When you do a radio show, you
hear your own voice and other voices in your ear.
I don't want to hear anything else for however long
I'm so, I kind of hide away. That's one of
(01:39:52):
my quirks. That's who I am. And the more I'm
around you guys, the more you get to like, Oh,
this is how he does what he does well. That's
the same thing with wide receivers. Why Odell Beckham Jr.
Should be there at his camp? Why Antonio Brown? Like
Antonio Brown has enough time to read Ben Roethlisberger's apology
(01:40:17):
to him on social media, but not enough time to
simply go to O, T A S and work out.
It's a new offense, it's a new quarterback. He got
a new contract even though he quit on his team.
I don't think we're asking a lot here to show up,
run some routes and show good camaraderie, are we? But
(01:40:38):
this is what happens when you empower a guy like
Antonio Brown who pulls the crap that he pulled when
he's in Pittsburgh, get your eyes a glow and cron
get a quick update on what's going on the world
of sports. Then I'm told I'm told we'll have Frank Vogel. Well,
that's appropriate that you do, Doug, because we've got plenty
(01:40:58):
of NBA coaching news to day. The Portland Trailblazers just
announcing that they've agreed to a multi year extension with
their head coach, Terry Stotts. On the heels of their
appearance in the Western Conference Finals. The NBA announced it's
All Rookie First Team today. It consists of DeAndre eight
and Marvin Bagley, Luca don Chech, Jaren Jackson, and Trey Young.
(01:41:19):
So all top five draft picks made up the All
NBA Rookie First Team. The last time that happened was
the eighty five campaign, when it was the top five
picks of the legendary nineteen eighty four NBA draft Camel Juan,
Sam Bowie, Michael Jordan's, Sam Perkins, and Charles Barkley. In
(01:41:39):
the NFL, multiple Istlants report, veteran defensive tackle and Dominan
Sue is finalizing a one year deal with the Tampa
Bay Buccaneers, who played last season with the NFC champion Rams.
NFL media reports the Super Bowl MVP Julian Edelman's fighting
finalizing a two year, eighteen million dollar extension with the Patriots.
Colts head coach Frank Reich said that Andrew Luck will
not participate in O T A S this week due
(01:42:02):
to a strained cap and San Francisco forty Niners rookie
defensive end Nick Bosa, the number two overall pick in
the draft, pulled his hamstring during practice today. Back to
Doug Gottlieb in ten seconds. But first the word from
Farmers at Farmers Insurance, we know every windshield collision has
a unique sound. Fetle bird, poop, drone seen it, covered it,
(01:42:24):
dr Farmers. Farmers under written my Farmers truck Fire Insurance
exchange that affiliates products unavailable every state. Doug Gotli Show,
Fox Flord Tradio. Um. Look, I've been critical of Adam Silver,
not because he's not brilliant. He is. He's brilliant um,
and he's doing some really good things behind the scenes
(01:42:46):
with the business of the NBA. But there are are
parts to this business which I look again, if I'm
running the NBA, Magic Johnson is one of my signature
former players. You can't have him go on one of
your party. You can't. I'm going the ESPN and ripped
the Lakers, like that's not good for business. That's not
(01:43:08):
good for business. But he gives really thought provoking answers.
Here's Lebron. Here's Adam Silver on the Today's Show on
Lebron missing the playoffs. Lebron is one of the biggest
stars in the world, and he also played in the East,
and so you know, the reason I look a little
bit tired is a lot of our games are in
the West, and it's late at night, and I recognize
(01:43:29):
most people choose to go to sleep at a reasonaboth time.
And so from a rating standpoint, not having Lebron in
the playoffs, not having him in the East has clearly
impacted ratings. Here's here's Adam Silver on West Coast start times.
If you start a game at six pm local time
in the West, it's not the most convenient thing. It's
not that as convenient for a television watcher on the
West Coast either, But when you look at the league
(01:43:51):
from a national standpoint, it may make sense to play
a little bit earlier in the West. And that's something
we're going to talk to our teams about this summer.
They're good luck with that that's not happening. They do
six class star times in college basketball, they are an
epic and complete disaster and getting people into the building
you just can't do it. You can't do it. It's
(01:44:11):
one of the reasons that I believe the league would
love Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to be with the
Knicks or with the Nets. You know, especially with the Knicks.
You gotta have a draw in New York. You already
have a draw in Boston. But people watching New York
and as much as you get to complaining from people like, look,
(01:44:33):
we complain, only want There's there's a very specific, easy
to explain reason why games start at the times that
they start, because they're trying to find the right mix
to get the most people watching. That's it. That's it.
(01:44:53):
And there are there are guys that make programming decisions
that know the math. It's not just when it starts,
when it's hit its peak and when it ends. They
want to win quarter hours, they want to win half hours,
and they also want to help their news audience which
follows it. Oh, if it's on ABC or the studio shows,
(01:45:14):
it's on t nt R on ESPN. So there's a
reason and a lot. They know how long the games go,
they know when the peak viewing hours are, they know
based upon markets, when the right time to start it is.
And if you're complaining about it, you just don't understand
the math to it. And I'm not blaming you. Most
of most of us don't understand the math to it.
(01:45:37):
But if you follow certain Michael Moleville on Twitter does
it for Fox, Like, there's a reason they know exactly
when the most people will watch, and that's when they
want the best games being played, certain games in certain markets.
And I don't. And there's nothing like. Actually, if you're
if you're Adam Silver, one thing you should be championing
(01:45:58):
is people think are League is as rigged because of
Tim Donaghee and the number one pick went to New
Orleans and Lebron went to the Lakers and they didn't
make the playoffs and Toronto may make the NBA Finals
and they don't even rate, you know, because their main
viewing body is in a different country, which doesn't rate
(01:46:19):
in our meters. So if you if you think, if
you think that ratings are something that we chase, we do.
On the other hand, we don't rig the system don't
believe me. I have the most recent data and plenty
of years of data to point out that that's not
actually the case. Oh bad for business for Lebron to
(01:46:46):
miss the playoffs, but it's not like they can, you know,
call a bunch of fouls and make stuff up so
they can win enough games the Lakers, everybody, everybody in
the league want the Lakers to make it. They still
couldn't make it. How about a story, How bad was
the Lakers last year? Considering how good they were. The
problem was not how bad the mojo got at the
end of the year. The problem was the juxtaposition of
(01:47:08):
that mojo, that feeling with the exact same team before
Lebron got hurt. That's the problem is they looked like
they were turning the corner. They looked like they were
figuring it out, and then they couldn't figure it out.
They could never quite get it right. And by the
(01:47:29):
time they got Lebron back, you know, now they're just
plugging leaks. Now, A Lonzo was hurt and he didn't
come back, so he didn't have your point guard, which
caused you to start rondo, and you didn't want to
play rondo. That many minutes. What's amazing about the Lakers
is if you simply said, hey, do you have the
(01:47:50):
best player in the game, I would say it's k D.
But if you want to say it's still Lebron, statistically,
Lebron was amazing. You're gonna have the best player in
the NBA who's going to be more rested than any
other star. You've got this group of young players who
have now played at least two years together, and Lonzo
(01:48:11):
Ball will finally have a full offseason to work on
his game. You got roughly forty million dollars in cap space,
and you have the number four pick in the NBA draft,
and you have your own TV network, so money is
not really an issue. You live in a great place
where people want to live, and it's a historically great franchise.
(01:48:31):
If you just run down those positives, like what's the problem,
the problem is the Lakers right now. It's kind of
a mess. How they came to hire Frank Vogel, and
of course the press conference yesterday and all of what
Magic Johnson discussed on first take, and I saw this quote.
(01:48:58):
This is a good one. Draymond Green, who has played
at a magnificent level, right it's it's the Duran thing
is really interesting. Like I don't know if it's us
just getting bored or of us being amazed at the
the Warriors comebacks. I'm not really sure. But he was
(01:49:21):
just playing this did just happen? Right? Didn't he just
get hurt? And wasn't he just averaging like forty game
before he got hurt? When don't the guy who like
single handedly carried them through the Clippers. Whn't the guy
who was single handedly carrying them against the Rockets when
when the Rockets were super super physical and tiring out
Steph Curry that was the same guy, right, So I
(01:49:46):
don't It's not like they've been playing this entire playoffs
with k D or they weren't playing well with k
D and he wasn't playing well and then he went out.
He was playing great, other guys were playing okay. Hey,
they were in very good shape. When he got hurt,
that's when we thought they might fall out of that
(01:50:06):
very good shape. They end up finishing off game five
and coming from behind and winning game six, and then
they won four games without him. But it wasn't like
they were down three games to one. It wasn't like
Kevin Durant was struggling at all in the playoffs, they
were winning and he was playing a ridiculous cliff And
now it's like you've got to convince other people why
(01:50:27):
he's viewed to be so good. All right, Frank vocal
is gonna join us up coming next and we'll get
to the press and the Doug got Lap Show Fox
Sports Radio. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific.

He's a new head coach of the l A Lakers.
He's Frank Vogel. He joins us in the Doug Otlip
Show on Fox Sports Radio now not going on yesterday
in l A Frank, how was that? What was what
was what was the whole thing like for you? Well,
it became a little bit different with the events of
the morning. But um, you know that's that's just the NBA.
(01:51:36):
You know how people say all the time that you know,
this is a this is the best series in in
the world, the best drama to follow in the world.
So I mean, you know, you expect stuff like that
in this league. It was a little bit different. But
you know, at the end of the day, Um, you know,
my focus, like I said yesterday, is just on you know,
getting integrated into this team and uh enrolling my sleeves
(01:51:57):
up and getting ready to get to work. How how
how does it affect you? Like emotional like you know,
you're you're a guy who you're not you don't go
too high, don't go too low. You've been through some
of the highs and some of the lows in the NBA.
But like, look, man, this is a great opportunity, an
unbelievable franchise and and maybe just the right time with
the young players coming back and Lebron having extra rested
(01:52:18):
and your time to shine. And yet it felt like
the events of the morning and even some of the
questions which I would defend my media brethren had to
be asked because it was Rob's first chance to see
the media. It did take away from what was supposed
to be your day. How did that feel emotionally? Which
literally meant nothing to me? Like the fact that it
pulled away from that. I mean, this wasn't like you
(01:52:41):
know it was. It was a proud moment for me,
but you know, I honestly like my focus is on
getting to work. You know, the fact that there was
a few questions directed uh towards Rob instead of me
really impacted me in zero way at all. It was
it was not a not a big deal. And again,
I'm just excited about being here, um A with this
(01:53:02):
proud franchise. Be like you alluded to the time that
I get to be here during this window with Lebron
James and what we're going to um build and surround
our young Cora with. We have a tremendous opportunity and
um you know that's that's where my whole focus is,
not only other stuff. How do you build trust with
Lebron James, Well, the same way you do with all
(01:53:25):
your players. You know, you're treat them with respect. You
you um make sure that you're challenging them and pushing them,
and you know, showing them that you're gonna put them
in an environment, um where they're going to be at
their best, and you know that we're going to tie
all the strings together with everything else that has to
happen to to build a winner. It feels like you
might have. I mean, you know, I'm I'm friends with
(01:53:47):
Miles Simon. I heard that you told somebody, Hey, only
two guys have kept me winning championship, Miles when you
were a manager of Kentucky, right and uh and and
and Lebron obviously when when he was playing at Cleveland. It.
But it does feel like you have the special um
ability to relate to Lebron like, look, I know how
we tried to stop you, and I know what allowed
(01:54:09):
you to be at your best. Have you been able
to have that conversation yet about the things that you
view as as what made Lebron unstoppable to your Indiana
Pacer team. Yeah, well, you know, I'm not going to
get two in detail about the conversations that I've had
with Lebron, But um, you know, I would say that
(01:54:29):
you know, that stuff is real, you know, in my
experience and competing against him, and you know, understanding the
way the league has changed over the last few years
and the plan that's going to go in place for Lebron,
you know, it was really rock solid, and um, you know,
all that stuff just just gives me, you know, a
world of confidence about what we can accomplish. Can you
(01:54:50):
believe how much the league has changed? Like no one
knows about no one, no one knows it better than you. Right,
you have Roy Hibbert. You have Roy Hibbert, who's an
All Star, Okay, and like in the in like one
or two years, he becomes used to he's a dinosaur overnight,
overnight because of basically because of Draymond Green. Right, I'm
(01:55:10):
just completely and then the rules and but it's really
amazing on how this league has changed. It's fascinating and remarkable,
and it's been a source of my obsession over the
last two or three years, in particular this year, this
sabbatical year that I had of you know, really just
(01:55:31):
in my mind learning a new game, you know, and
and the new rules because it's it's very different stylistically
with the way that we you know had success, um
you know, with my Pacers teams and the way the
league played even prior to that. UM. But there has
been examples through it throughout time of of this this
style of play UM being used, and you know, it's
(01:55:51):
just it's just something you see on a nightly basis
now and um, you know, quite frankly, I think it's
amazing for the league because it's so so much fun
to watch and um, you know, just the um the
experience that fans get when they come to the game
and when they watch games on TV. I mean, it's
just it's just fascinating to see the range that you know,
(01:56:13):
five players on the floor are shooting the basketball with
and then the space that creates, um, you know, leading
to uh basket attacks and exciting plays at the rim.
It's just good for the league. Yeah, On the other hand,
how do you stop it? Right? How you you can't
touch a guy? Like? How about how about what Utah
did to James Harden And it almost worked right where
they actually played behind behind him on his left side
(01:56:36):
so that they were just there when he would shoot
three point I was forcing him in because they had
a great rim protector. Like there's um like, have you
have you found do you think you have like the
the keys uh the code to to break how you
how you at least slow down some of these offenses. Well,
anybody that pretends to have all the answers is wrong
(01:56:57):
and and they're not. They're not gonna get much done.
You know, I've got to continue to learn uh, learn it,
study it, and UH it's going to continue to evolve.
And you know what you do with uh with with
different teams and the current personnel you have, UM, you know,
everything is going to be slightly different in different ways.
So you know, I'll continue to learn it. But like
(01:57:18):
I said, I've been obsessed with um figuring out the
evolution of NBA defense in in today's NBA NBA world.
And I've got some strong viewpoints on things that have
to happen to build a modern elite defense. How involved
do you want to be in the free agent recruitment?
As as involved as they need me to be. Quite frankly,
(01:57:40):
you know this is uh, you know there's got to
be um you know, a strong plan in place by
by our front office, which there is, and um, you know,
wherever I can help, you know, I'm going to get
involved as as much as I can, because you know,
we're going to coach our tails off. And everybody in
the league is all thirty teams, all thirty coaches are
(01:58:02):
are talking about coaching their tails off. But much of
the battle is one on July one, you know, with
how teams are put together, you know, and um, you
know obviously that's going to be an important time, um,
you know for our franchise, for really for the whole league.
Last thing, Frank Vogel our guests, he's the Lakers new
head coach. I was in there like free agent minicamp
(01:58:23):
three times. I was with their summer summer league team
one time. And every time I walked in the it
was the old facility. I just remember, like you walk
past the pictures and the first week you'd walk past
you like all right you and then you start to
go like, holy hell, this is the Lakers. This is
Will Chamberlain, George Mike and Carimeo, dul Jabar, Elgin, Baylor,
Jerry West, Shaquille O'Neil, Kobe Bryant, like and and and
(01:58:46):
I know when you when you guys practice or yesterday
during the press conference, you can look up and you
can see all of those trophies. Has it I mean,
considering like the Orlando thing, you guys had massively, it
took you took over a really young up in the
second year. It was good. It was a good team,
but just tons of injuries that never really got never
really had a shot to compete, uh, to get the
(01:59:08):
Lakers job. Has it? Has it set in yet that
you're going to be coaching at Staples Center, the home
team wearing the purple and gold. You know, it had
sunk in and it is really exciting for me personally, um,
you know, on on some level because of the tradition
here and you know what, you know what this uh,
(01:59:29):
this brand and this franchise has meant growing up. Um,
but more importantly, quite frankly, that where we're at and
what we're going to be able to the opportunity of
of what we're going to be able to accomplish over
the next three years, that's to me the most exciting
part of it. You know, it doesn't matter they'd want
any championships, you know, to be in a situation with
(01:59:50):
you know, the current roster and what we can build
it into. Um, you know, it's an opportunity to to
win big and um you know that's what I'm most
excited about. Well, look, they were really a defensive team
before injuries ravaged them. So I know you have a
lot of fun, all that length and youthful enthusiasm. Of course,
I'm sure there'll be some new additions. We'll let you
get back to work. We appreciate you joining us. And Frank,
(02:00:10):
do you ever need anything let us know, Thanks so
much for joining us. Appreciate it. All right. That's Frank Vogel,
the new head coach of the l A Lakers. Do
we have time for the press? Yeah? Sure? Uh the
doug got leave shows brought to you by Discover Card.
We treat you like you treat you here, size of
glowing crime with the press. What do you got? All right?
(02:00:31):
We got David Griffin, new vice president of the New
Orleans Pelicans, on Anthony Davis saying today at a conference call,
will probably sit together in Los Angeles at some point
around the draft workouts, and I think that's the next step,
look each other in the eye and talk about what's
important to us. We're very optimistic from previous conversations with
(02:00:52):
Rich Paul, We're very confident that we have a compelling
situation for him here in New Orleans. I agree, I
I agree, Like, why are you gonna you got Drew
a holiday, you get Zion Williamson. I don't know, but
I do think that if you want to leave, you
want to transfer, you gotta go and see the coach.
If you want to be traded, you gotta go in
and see your new president. Meanwhile, in Portland, busy day
(02:01:15):
there Yahoo Sports reporting Damian Lillard is expected to get
a one million dollar super Max deal over four years,
and a short time ago, they came to an agreement
on a multi year extension for their head coach, Terry Stotts. Uh.
I mean, look, Terry Stotts earned it, and I just
the one thing about Damian Lillard is gonna get the
(02:01:36):
super Max and he is the guy there. It's always
funny though, we're all gonna say, like, man, if Damian
Lillard only had more help, if he only took less money.
But I mean, I'm not gonna get into somebody else's pockets.
I canna make forties something million dollars. You're God bless
him back, get out there and pressed. But everybody says
they want to win, but sometimes you gotta sacrifice financially
(02:01:56):
if you want to win. And Lillard does have his
own shoe, he does have a bunch of of ads.
You guys think the Bucks that take a commanding three
games to one lead, I'm gonna go with the Raptors.
I'm going with the Raptors as well. I see Ron
Wis has taking the Bucks, and we're gonna put Dan
Buyer down for the Bucks. That's probably a good choice. Bobby,
he's gonna say back, look, we shot the ball so terribly,
(02:02:17):
and he'll do the we's the wei thing that we
shot the ball so terribly. My thanks to Frank Vogel.
He was excellent. And yes, I agreed with Rob Parker
today and I'm not breaking out a sweat Maggic Johnson
can't do what he did yesterday. It took away from Frank.
This is Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio.
