Doug breaks down the chaotic  first day of NBA free agency and discusses why it may be best for the Knicks to be passing on KD and Kyrie, why Kawhi is doing the smart thing by waiting in the weeds to decide where he will sign and how he thinks D’Angelo Russell will fit in with the Warriors. Also, NBA Insider for Yahoo Sports, Chris Haynes joins the show to discuss if KD and Kyrie will work with the Nets, what the Lakers’ remaining options are, and the 76ers signing Al Horford and Tobias Harris while trading Jimmy Butler to Miami.

you're listening to Fox Sports Radio Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, Coming from the sunny
city of angels As all of Los Angeles waits. We're waiting, waits,

(00:44):
waits and waits some more. Welcome in. I hope you're
having a great day. Wow. What a Sunday? Usually Sunday afternoon.
You know, in the fall, we watch football, in the
spring we watch college hoops, and in the summer, early summer,
it's either you know, golf, final round of golf or

(01:08):
the NBA Playoffs. Instead, we're sitting here, waiting, waiting, waiting
to see where Kawaide Leonard goes, and instead Kyrie Irving,
Kevin Durant go to the Brooklyn Nets. Get to that
in a second. Boston, who never signs a free agent
for the third time in four years, gets a big

(01:29):
free agent. Uh, the Golden State Warriors make a weird
move which sort of makes sense and sort of doesn't
make any sense at all. And Uh, the Philadelphia seventies
six ers seemed to have brought in sand to the beach.

(01:50):
We get to all of that on the show. All
of it. The Doug Got Lip Show is brought to
you by Farmers. And Farmers, we've seen almost everything. So
when I cover almost anything, when it's game time, have
an experienced player help you stay here the game put
their experience into play at farmers dot com. Let's start
with Kevin Durant, and let's start with the New York Knicks,

(02:13):
who may have just done the smartest thing they've done
a long time now. Some people believe that what the
Nicks are doing is called the you look fat in
those pants. You're not familiar with that. You look fat
in those pants. I picture yourself at a club, smoke lights, ladies, drinks,

(02:39):
song comes on, You get up the nerve, walk over, Hey,
you wanna dance? She looks at you, looks at your gear,
your watch. No thanks, And instead of simple walking away

(03:01):
and taking the l you say no no, I said,
you look fat nosed pants. See me do it again?
You want to dance? Do with your lips? You look
fat nosed pants? Kind of same thing, right, That's what
people believe the Knicks are doing. I wanna dance, you

(03:27):
look fat in those pants. But I believe the Knicks
are actually making the smartest decision in the history of
the James Dolan run franchise. I was the first to
say on Fox Sports two years ago when I took

(03:48):
the job in April, that the best player on the planet,
best basketball player on the planet, was actually Kevin Durant. Now,
Lebron jameson had a better career and had been better
at previous times, but because of age and attrition and
lack of pure chump shot offensive skill, and that Kevin
Durant had improved defensively and become a rim protector, I

(04:10):
thought KB was better. And in the next two NBA
finals he proved to be better than Lebron James. And
finally this year people were saying, hey, Lebron James might
not be as good as Kevin Durant. And then he
didn't make the playoffs. And it wasn't until he got

(04:33):
hurt the first time in the playoffs that people started
to say, you know what, Kevin Durant's best player on
the planet. But Kevin Rant is likely to not play
most of, if not all, of this season. When he returns,
he'll be in his early to mid thirties, competing with
a torn Achilles tendon repairs, repaired achilles tendon, the same

(04:58):
injury which ended Isaiah tom his career, the same injury
which Dominicquilkins was never the same from Kobe Bryant was
never the same from I mean, you go back through
and most every guy who had to kill his tendon
tear was not the same. Then you add in the
fact that Kd's broken his foot twice. Had he broke

(05:20):
it at surgery, didn't take and it fixed again. He's
got some weird leg feet things seven footers haven't attends
to that. And he's in his thirties. And if you're
the Knicks, like go back through the knicks recent history,
Katino Mobley heart problem, Mari Stodemeyer terrible knee, Christoph Frezinge's

(05:48):
never recovered from the knee injury. That's why they had
no problem trading him. Like you you can kind of
go through so many of the Penny Hardaway was not
the same player due to injury and a agent attrition.
Go and look, and you'll start to go, wait a second,

(06:08):
maybe James Dolan and the New York Knicks, though everyone
seems to hate James Dolan, might actually be doing the
right thing right, might actually be doing the right thing.
It's like a car that you research and all the

(06:28):
research tells you that car is gonna break down and
it's gonna be expensive when it breaks down, a foreign car,
especially one with a type of lion on the front
of the car. You're like, no, they made better than
they used to be. Like, all right, maybe this one's
made better than every other one. Maybe this one's been

(06:48):
in the shop, but it's fine. But there's a reason
that those cars have a terrible rating in terms of
fit and finish and and depend ability. Like, I know
everybody hates James Dolan, but what if James Dolan is
actually right to not offer the max contract to a

(07:09):
guy who's not going to play for you for a
year and when he comes back might not be the same.
And and keep in mind, Kyrie Irving made it pretty
clear he was going to the Nets. And if you're
gonna bring Kevin Durant by himself and you're not gonna

(07:31):
have him for a year. Kevin Durant doesn't become more
he actually becomes less valuable. And then there's this Sir
Marcus Thompson. Marcus Thompson from The Athletic wrote a lengthy
piece and Kevin Durant's relationship or lack thereof with Steph Curry,
how he envisioned himself becoming close to Curry and that
never ended up happening. He wanted that type of relationship,

(07:54):
it just didn't work like that. Thompson says, there's behind
the scene, there were no behind the scenes issues between
the IT and Curry, but they just never became closer.
Durant would have hoped their lives off the court much different.
Curry is married with kids, Durant is single. That's really
what it comes down to, right Like if you have
a if you have a wife and kids. Like single

(08:16):
people just don't understand what are you doing the weekend?
Like sports? Who are you hanging out with? I don't
know my kids friends parents, really yeah, their friends become
your their friends become your friends. Whoever has a pool,
whoever has a grill, you cook out, the kids swim
and you go love him, but they're wearing me out.

(08:38):
Where As single people sleep till ten or eleven o'clock.
If you have kids, can you remember the last time
that you slept until nine o'clock? They're always up early, always, always, always.
You don't know what to do with yourself. That makes
complete sense. And Steph Curry is a legit dad, legit

(09:00):
married dude. He has his own interest, his own hobbies,
his own life. They don't live near each other. They
simply worked together. And sports is a business, and business
is all the same. Every business is a people business,
a relationship business. Whereas Kyrie is kind of a wandering soul,

(09:21):
sold too is Kevin Durant. Kyrie is single, so too
is Kevin Durant. Both guys are on their phone. Both
guys are on social media. Both guys like to travel around.
Both guys are kind of like modern day basketball hippies,
and so they found kind of like voices. What's amazing
about it is the Brooklyn Nets. And look if I

(09:44):
have if my wife and I have one, regret, CBS,
move me back to New York. I was out of
here for two years, and they said, hey, we want
you to broadcast my city. We never looked in Brooklyn,
and had we we'd be multimillionaires because everything we would
have bought would have doubled in value, like it's on
fire in terms of property value. Now, we didn't do
it because we're not concrete jungle short of people. They

(10:04):
have parks and they have really cool stuff. But I
got a little I got a little dude who likes
to be outside playing ball, playing sports, doing whatever, running
down the street. And you don't still don't do that
necessarily in Brooklyn. But Brooklyn is awesome, awesome. The transformation
in Brooklyn is that which people are going to copy
for years to come and are copying four years to come. Um.

(10:35):
But the idea the Brooklyn Nets were built on chemistry,
on culture, and you're bringing in Kyrie Irving, who by
all reports, destroyed the culture in Boston and they were
a team that played for each other, and that's not
the way that Kyrie rolls, and frankly, it's something that

(10:57):
k d had a little bit of struggles with. And
Katie is not even gonna play likely the first year.
So I'm not telling you that James Dolan is some
savant with basketball because he doesn't make basketball decisions. But
for a guy that's been burned fifteen times over by
over paying for an asset which is not right because

(11:19):
of injury, I don't think it's crazy to not offer
Kevin Durantt the max contract. Whereas the Brooklyn Nets are
being championed today. But let me know when Kyrie Irvin
becomes the type of leader you want to run your
franchise to a championship. Boston was close, added Kyrie. They

(11:41):
got worse. Not all his fault, but a portion of
it is. And the reason they got together and decided
to stay together and decided to make it try and
make it work with the Brooklyn Nets, who are before today,
the Brooklyn Nets, I kid you not, are probably the
sixth most six most regarded franchise in in the Tri

(12:05):
state area. Not not kidding, okay, Yankees first, probably Giant, second,
Nick's third, uh, then probably the Jets, the Mets, and
then the Nets and you know what, they're probably seventh.
The Rangers are bigger than the Brooklyn Nets. We're like, oh,

(12:26):
you're a hir No, I'm not ask anybody who's a
New Yorker. They seriously care about what the Rangers do.
They seriously care about what the Yankees do. Yes, the
met Yes, the Mets have been a bit of a
bit of a laughing stock of late, but they just
went to the World Series a couple of years ago.
All Right, the Jets are a bigger drawing card and

(12:48):
the Giants and the Yankees absolutely are, and so are
the Knicks. Like that's the seventh biggest franchise in the
Tri state area. And some of it is around as
Sons of Brooklyn. Some of it is the curiosity and
frankly weirdness of of Kyrie Irving. And he grew up,

(13:08):
you know, in Jersey when the Nets played there, and
that's we're good, by the way, when he's growing up.
And then of course the relationship with Kevin Durant, and
let's not also kid ourselves. The negativity surrounding a James
Dolan owned ball club doesn't help either. But that that
was an incredible but potentially transformative day. But I'll point

(13:32):
out to you that the Lakers once upon a time
thought Dwight Howard, prime of his career, back surgery, he'll
be fine. How did that work out? How did that
work out? There was a time last year when a
team had great culture and added Kyrie Irving as they're
starting point guard, and thought, we're gonna win an NBA championship?

(13:52):
How did that work out? And I look at the
New York Knicks and I think to myself, there's a
Garth Brooks song. It goes, some of God's greatest gifts
are unanswered prayers. You guys ever heard the song. The
basic story is he's at the he goes back to

(14:13):
his high school football game. He sees his old girlfriend
from high school. They looks at his wife, and he
realizes that all he wanted was this one girl when
he's in high school. Didn't work out with her end
up being the best thing that ever happened to him.
That could be the Knicks. All they ever wanted was
Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. And you know what, kyr
Irving is super talented, pain the ass and Kevin Durant

(14:35):
might never be the same again. It could be the
best thing ever happened in the next And then we
wait and wait and wait on Kauai Leonard Kawhi. Leonard
reportedly has asked to bring his trainer along to the Lakers.
Dude how quickly can you make that one happened? Yes,

(14:58):
rob Blink, here's the answered. Yes, sure, okay, whatever you
want paper just all right. We'll discuss that plus more
with Chris Haynes. Did the Knicks really not offer Kevin
Durant a max contract? That's up Kevin next? But first,
using true Car, you can easily find the car that

S r P. Don't you hate not knowing what other
people paid? Right? In real estate? You have it. It's
called comps. Why don't you have in car buying? Well,
you do. All you gotta do is use true Car.
Then you get true price, which essentially the same thing.

catch live editions of The Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays

(16:24):
at noon Eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio app. Chris Haynes is a
senior NBA insider for Yahoo Sports fall on Twitter at
Chris by Haynes. Check out his uh podcast posted up
with Chris Haynes. It's very very good. Most surprising thing
that happened yesterday, Chris, it's probably the um of getting

(16:49):
DENZELO Russell to the Warriors. UM. I'll reported yesterday that
Kevin Durant wood engage UM, which would surprised me at
the because he didn't have to do that. That was
clearly helping the Warriors out. But the book, when they's
had enough cap spaces, just take them in. But worried

(17:09):
that out that it was gonna be d Aelo Russell
sent back that that's ideally personnel. Why that they doesn't
it doesn't fit, um the scheme of going to state
right now. But when you look at Clay Thompson, who
was going to be out, uh for at least half
the season, possibly even the entire season next year, Uh,

(17:33):
this is good. It's something back for nothing. But I
view it as a probably a one year round to
where when Clay Thompson is healthy, did they have another
asset person who's a hers in the All Star to
probably look at on the trade market. But you know,
it's a good it's I guess the win win situation
for everybody. But yeah, that was probably the most surprising
situation for me. Next and that yeah, I mean he's

(17:54):
a pick and roll guy and they run the fewest
amount of picking rolls in the league. It does the
other hand, he can help take some of the pressure
in the usage numbers off of Steph Curry next year
when they don't have Clay. So I mean that part two,
it does make sense, but in terms of competing for
a championship, it's gonna be a weird group they have, right,
no Iguadala, They're probably I mean Livingston probably retires, right,

(18:18):
We'll see what happens with Kavan, Luney, no k D
no Clay to start the year. Like man, what a
what a complete overaul in such a short period time.
And it doesn't like they'll be able to bring back
Luny if taken in Dieloo was going to be paid seven. Um,

(18:38):
it's coming up season, so you know they're they're giving
up a lot. You know, they have the trade Entrego
dollar a separate deal to get some cap space and
so this is a lot. But uh it's not the
like most ideal fit, but it's an all star asset
who whose value is going to be very attractive, you

(18:59):
know once shop. So I think it's a situation where
the war is just played this next season because I
don't think we don't think anybody really thinks they're going
to present the West. I think they're going to end
their streets of getting to the finals. That's coming up season.
But you know, it's it's a situation where they don't
lose Kat for nothing. Um okay, So there's two different

(19:20):
possibilities here with the Knicks and k D. Right. One
is they're doing the I call it the you look
fat in those pants? Right, You're at the club. You
asked the girls you want you wanted to add She's like, no, no, no,
I said you look fat in those pants. Right. That's
kind of what people, some people think that Knicks are doing.
They couldn't get him, so they kind of low balled him,
went off from the max. I actually think there's the

(19:42):
possibility've been burned so many times with injured players before that.
Once they knew Kyrie wasn't coming, why give him the max?
I mean, it's it's kind of a reasonable thing to
worry about. Is in his thirties coming off a torn
Achilles tenant, he might not be the same. What do
you think? What? You probably know what really went down

(20:03):
between k D's camp and the New York Knicks, But
they reallydn't. They didn't get a chance to really sit
and talk. But I'll say this, you know New York
that was If that's the way the things transpired, the
NIXT the next start pushing back when the area that

(20:23):
they're putting something that help saying that you know, we
weren't gonna give him a max anyway. They feel like
that they never had a chance to sit down and
talk with him. Obviously, they didn't want to see his
medical report, um to see how things were transpiring, and
you know how I would look for the next year.
But aside not uh, it would be very I think

(20:46):
it was very, very dumb of the Knicks, even with
Kevin the rest injury, not to offer him max if
he were to sit him Because I understand what you're
saying that they they've had troop with player injuries in
the past, but this is Kevin Durant. This is the
top two player when he's healthy. Uh, you don't pass
on that. You don't dismiss you don't dismiss that. And

(21:07):
then you look at the type of player he is.
He's not somebody who relies on athleticism. You know, part
of the reason what makes him so great is that
he's seven foot but plays like a guard. So you know,
I think there's very a very minimal risk of giving
him that super max. I mean, if he's not a
top two I think he becomes back. You know, it
can be a top fifth team player. That's still way

(21:29):
better than anything they've had in a long time with
New York Nick. So if this was a situation where
they really were not going to offer him a Super Max,
I think that would have been extremely done on their part. Uh.
We we went from the Lakers having no shot to
now the latest reports are Kauai is like, hey, can
I bring my trainer? Can I can I basically have
the Lebron James, you know, get some dudes, get some

(21:52):
dudes within the organization. What do you think the chances
are of Kawhi Leonard signing with the Lakers? You know,
he's as the days days go by, it's you know,
it's pretty obvious that the Lakers they like their they
like their eyes. What's going on? And you know that

(22:12):
wasn't the case a week or two weeks ago. We
we had a feeling that they would they would be
able to secure a meeting. But now it's getting like
he's getting serious. It's really getting serious. It's it's to
a point where I think the Raptors are starting to
try to start to sweat this. And I think before, um,
you know, Clippers were viewed as the team that can

(22:33):
ply them away. But it's gonna it's gonna be tough. Though.
It's gonna be a tough situation. You know, Kauai is
gonna take his time. I reported yesterday that he was
bypassing meeting with any teams on day one, which is
usually odd for the top free agents that they usually
right at the right with free age. He starts the
meet with the team, so you know, he's um, he's
taking LOWD management to free agency. Was gonna take his time,

(22:56):
and I was told the process will last about a
couple of days, and so h there's a lot of
teams and players who's waiting for him to get off
the board so they can get on with their business.
So it's it's gonna be unique, a unique situation. Nonetheless, Yeah,
am I crazy to like you to really like Utah
what they're putting. I'm not crazy here, am I? No?

(23:18):
I think they I think they may some you know,
I definitely did they make some upgrades that moves and
made you know, Connie and who's the other day they
got yes, yesterday Bogdanovich. Yeah, that's right, you know, So
not that I mean and Bogdanovich, he didn't he's done
a good job in Lebron before. He's not bad defensively.
You got the best defensive center in the league. You know,

(23:39):
you've got Joe Ingles who looks looks like you get
down to sixer and go out and hit jump shots.
And you know they have they have a young and
burgeoning superstar that they now put a competent team around
the space the floor around like that. That ain't a
that ain't a bad team. Like as we're we're telling
you the Warriors are a mess, right the Lakers unless
they get chair still kind of income. Believe there's not

(24:00):
a lot of people out there, and see what happens
with the Clippers. I want to get to the rockets
in the second like it ain't crazy to really like
the Jazz. I like the Jazz, and I like Portlands.
I think I think the lows of Portland's made as
well resigning Rodney's hood um bringing in white Side for
a year. You know, while youth of nursing are still
nursing his injury, he'd probably back somewhere mid part of

(24:21):
the season. But Damian Lewis never had a lot of presence.
He's never never, never had an aerial threat in his career.
If you think about that, and so he'll finally have
that and he sign White Side and they're they're they're
they're looking good. They're looking good. Utah is looking good.
They at the spacers. Uh, I like college's gonna buy
veteran leadership from that from that U that point guard spot.

(24:44):
The West is gonna be nice for the first time
in a while. Like I said, it's going to be
the Western is gonna be wide open, because I really
do think the War is gonna punt um there in
the their NBA finals appearing from next season. I think
I look through the group the following year. I don't
think there's any reason to believe you're wrong on that. Um,
how did Jimmy Butler become a member of the Miami
heat Man dealing with creative executives who know how to

(25:11):
get things done when it seems like, you know, the
teams over the cap and don't have necessary uh assets
to try to make things happen. You know, pat riley Man,
he's clever. You know. Daryl Morey is one of those
guys as well, where they can just figure out ways
the maneuver and get what's get what's necessary to make

(25:31):
it happen. So Jimmy and we've known all that, you know,
he's he spoke with players the last couple of years.
You know, let them know that. You know, Miami was
definitely attractive place, but there was just no room. You
couldn't see it. Similar to what Minnesota Timberwl was like.
They were going after DiAngelo Russell actually sat with him
first day of free agency and trying to get him

(25:51):
in Minnesota, and um, you know verst of Rosos come from,
you know, Jerald Morays free in Houston, and they don't
have the necessary cap space, but they were going to
be able to get something done. And yeah, there was
sources with telling me they had trades lined up to
where the Russell committed, they can pull it off and
open up the necessary chap space. And that's what happened

(26:12):
with Jimmy Butler in Miami. Man, and I don't I
don't know if it moves the needle for them, you know,
um just you know upstandings. I'm not sure about that,
but that's where he wanted to be and they're able
to get it done. Yeah. Uh. And then let's circle
back to the Nets, so they get Kyrie they get

(26:33):
k D. I guess my only question would be the
Nets were widely regardless having kind of the best culture
in the league or one of the best cultures in
the league last year, guys rooting for one another, UM
shooting a ton of threes. How how can they maintain
Kenny Atkinson's unique style of offense. Now they have Kyrie Irving,
who has his own way of doing things. Well, you know,

(26:56):
Doug is very awful, awfully similar to UM. The year
Boston had before Kyrie Irving, I was never able to play.
You know, it was a fun, college style offense. Uh.
The culture was great. You didn't hear anything any negative
rumblings coming out of that locker room. Now it's gonna

(27:17):
be similar. You know, Kevin Durant's not gonna be playing
next year, so it's gonna be Kyrie stepping into a
very very similar situation. And you would think, and you
would hope that Kyrie learned from kings or deal in
Boston and handles things a little bit different because the
New York media, I would think it would be a

(27:38):
little tougher, uh than the Boston media, but it was.
It's going to be interesting. Mouth covered both both covered
both Kyrie Irvan when I was a beat writer in Cleveland.
When I used to be a beat writer and go
to State covered k V. So I know that they're
very similar in their moves and everything. So when that
team is still relatively young, so it's going gonna be

(28:00):
it's gonna be a parative that you come in bringing
in some qualities and timesble to try to keep a
positive atmosphere. Um So that's that's one thing that's definitely
one narrative I'll be looking at throughout the course of
their scenes. There gonna be gonna be super interesting. Chris
Haynes follow on Twitter at Chris B. Haynes. Download his

thanks so much for joining us. Look forward to talking
to very near future. Thanks. Take sure my pleasures. Pleasure
is all my Doug got the show Fox Sports Radio.
All right, coming up next, let me give you my
thoughts on Kawhi Leonard Waiting, smart or stupid I'll explain next.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug dot

(28:42):
Leap Show. Weekdays in noon eastern three pm Pacific, Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I kind of think Kauai
smart to be sitting here laid in the cut. Do
you know what in the cut means? Are uh maybe

(29:03):
laying in the grass, maybe laying kind of lane low
in the grass to cut? Um kind of maybe Okay, yeah,
that's the that's the I believe that's the um uh,
what's what's the word I'm looking for? Ryan music? Where
you know where something comes from? Um? Origin? Yes, country

(29:26):
of origin. No, that's sorry, that's a spelling be right there.
I use it as you can use it in a sentence.
But laying the cut, you know, they're just like laying
out on something, letting it kind of organically take care
of itself. And I think, um, I wouldn't look too
much into the well can I bring my trainers? Thing? Right?

(29:52):
Because because you're not necessary, it's it's they're all gonna
say yes, right, they're all gonna say yes. But um,
but I think it's smart because now the dust settles,
Now he knows what's real. Jimmy Butler's not going to
the clippers. If he went to the clippers, it would

(30:13):
be essentially adding him to Patrick Beverley who resigned, Lou
Williams who's under contract for another I think two years, Montrez,
Harold Danilla Gallinari. They still have some cap space to
go out and potentially make a trade for somebody else,
and maybe they add somebody mid season, which, by the way,
is what Toronto did, right. A lot of those pieces
were added as they went. But um um, but I

(30:43):
think it's smart. Now. Now you sit around and look,
you're like, now, does it screw potentially the Lakers, the Clippers,
the Raptors because they can't go out and get a
big piece. Potentially it does, potentially does, But that's not
You're concerned. You're concerned about yourself, your own future, and
the Lakers apparently become a very real possibility. This is

(31:07):
one of the few cases in all honesty where unless
some stories, unless they don't get them, and some stories
come out that they completely bungled whatever meetings there were.
I even think coming in second to Toronto is a
win for the Lakers. Those old no Fear shirts, we
talked about them before, like they used to be these

(31:28):
shirts no Fear. They'd have these clever sayings on them,
one was second places the first loser. That doesn't apply
here to the Lakers. It has just been pr mess
after pr mess after pr mess for the last six months.
And to be one of the finalists for Kauai Leonard

(31:51):
when it was long thought that he didn't want to
play with Lebron James, especially after all of these pr
nightmares and fires that they had to put out. I
kind of think that'd be a win. But but for
Kawhi Leonard, a guy who reportedly doesn't like drama, he
is this is creating more drama. But it also falls

(32:12):
in line to the the narrative of he does what he wins,
when he wants what he wants, when he wants how
he wants it, and he doesn't engage in social media
and given us some sort of clues in doing it,
if anybody wants to know, I have no idea what
he's gonna do, but I do think what he's doing
by waiting, by laying in the cut, as they say,

(32:37):
is super super smart. Let's get the games. This is
game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Dan Buyer has
been laying in the cut, played in the chariot game
time with us what's the game? Well, I thought it
was psychic there and you'll find out why in a second.

(33:00):
The game today is big deal, little deal, no big deal,
little deal or no deal. That Kawhi Leonard's people every
portly asked the Lakers to bring along his trainers A
little deal, A little deal. He's there already in Toronto.
I'm guessing that it had already been discussed with the Clippers, right,
so you're just like, hey, by the way, the Raptors

(33:22):
have this deal where we bring it along our own
guy the um. It would be interesting though, because I
believe his workout guy is like a workout assistant coach
with the team. I don't know what that would mean
for the Lakers, but their staff is not fully full
filled out. Big deal, A little deal or no Deal
that Kevin Durant posted on Instagram quote, no man can

(33:45):
speak or make decisions for me. Think for yourself and
you'll find the truth. I got nothing, no deal, I
got nothing. It's like it's like Kyrie gave send him this,
sent him a screenshot of it that he tweeted it out.
I do think some of it is people thought that
rich Klemon was gonna push him to go to the
Knicks because rich Klemon grew up in Knicks fan But

(34:06):
who knows, man, I can't. I don't know the context
of what he's instagramming. What he's not big deal, little
deal or no deal that the Miami here are trading
his sound Whiteside to the Portland Trailblazers. Um, it feels
like a little deal if it doesn't work out. He's
in the last year of his contract, and by the way,
that's not the sign of a good contract. We're like, well,
it's a little bit more money, but at least you

(34:27):
can buy him out. But it feels like a little deal.
They need somebody to replace Nurkics. He's super athletic, but
he's mercurial and it will be an interesting fit. Big deal,
little deal or no deal that Ennis Cantor said the Trailblazers,
who only gave him six minutes to decide whether he
wanted to resign with the Blazers. How many minutes do
you need? Apparently more than six your time begins now, Yeah,

(34:53):
I mean, like, look, I like Ennis a lot, and
I understand how it sounds to somebody, but it's not
like he's never played in Portland before he finished the
season in Portland? Do you want to play the Portland Trailblazers?
Can I have six minutes? Like? Do you need six minutes?
Dan Buyer? Do you wanna play with the Portland shil Blazers. Sure, okay,

(35:17):
if you wanna play with the Portland Trailblazers, that's a
yes for me. Right, how long does this? How long
does it take to you just played at a place
I'm gonna assuming the money is about the same. He's like, well,
can I call my brother or call my family? It's
not again, I would understand it if they said, hey,
do you want to come to tim Buck two and

(35:37):
play for a year? Like, man, I've never been to
tim Buck two. I'm gonna call my brother Like no,
no, no no, you can't call your brother or your parents.
This is the place he just played. That's it. So
I don't I want to say, I don't don't really
have any sympathy either you do or don't want the
job period. And he took a job with with Boston Celtics. Right,

(35:58):
two years too many dollars? Big deal, a little deal
or no deal? That Cowboys running back Ezekiel Elliott will
meet with the NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell tomorrow. How about
that music concert in Vegas incident with the security guard.
That's a big deal. You got to meet with the commissioner.
You better be honest with the commissioner. And if you're
honest with the commissioner, you'll probably say, yeah, I shouldn't
a big boy that guy. He was being a jerk,

(36:20):
But I was a bigger jerk and I love it
too much to drink. Guy who got suspended a year
and a half ago for six games. Meeting with the
commissioner over something that's on videotapes not good making it
an annual affair. Big deal? Well it's uh, it's July second.
What is your July second? Is my meeting with Ezeki?
Elliott Zeke? How are you Zeke? Big deals opening at

(36:42):
Zeke Best. I'm not sure. Oh no, mackam Jr. Is
gonna come in? No? No, no, Um? What's the uh?
What's the former Patriot and Brown who caught passes from
Tom Brady last week? Uh? Josh Gordon. Josh Gordon's the
opening act. Hi just just check it in commission Can

(37:02):
I come back? And He's like, no, you cannot There's
a Jesus Jones cover band called Jerry Jones that's gonna
be opening up as well. Big deal, little deal or
no deal? That TMZ Sports posted video of Bronze running
back Kareem Hunt talking with police after a night on
in Cleveland after having a small argument with a friend. Now,
Hunt wasn't charged, no report was filed, and he left

(37:23):
without incident. But does this a big deal, little deal
or no deal? It's a big deal. Anytime there's an
incident with Kareem Hunt, it feels like a big deal.
Like he just needs a new set of friends. He
needs John Robos in his life. We all do. That's
game time. This is game time on The Duck Gottlieb Show.

(37:47):
He's among the most talented players to play the sport
and maybe you have ever played the sport, but he
is far from perfect. How does Kyrie Irving fit in
with the Rooklyn Nets culture? Will he learn from him
his mistakes of last season? Or will it be all
about Kyrie? We'll take it to New York next in

(38:32):
If you didn't, I'll repeat all reiterate something that he iterated.
That's at Joe Lacup. He didn't say they're gonna retire
Kevin Durant's number, but he did say as long as
he's with the team, as long as he owns the team,
no one will ever wear a thirty five Again, Am
I crazy? But three years with the team retiring a
jersey that's kind of a that's that's that's not long

(38:55):
enough tenure, right. I'm not like and I again like
the things I say about Kevin Durant and my caution
over what he'll look like after injury or questioning whether
or not he should have his number retired. I'm the
guy who was saying he was the best player in
the league. It's not like I'm a k D hater.

(39:17):
I don't care that he went to Golden State. I'm
just pointing out, Um, I'm just I'm just pointing out
that I think it's silly, really really silly. That we
you know, we retire his number after just three years
of service. The Doug Gottlie Show is brought to you
by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything, so we

(39:40):
know how to cover almost anything when it's game time.
Having experienced player help me stay at the game, put
their experience and play at Farmers dot com. Uh. In
the NBA, they used the term he's a he's a
different kind of guy. That's what they said. Hey, you know,
he's just different different. Can we a bunch of things difficult,

(40:02):
mere curio, curious or just a pan the ass, but
we also should include talented with it right, You wouldn't
Teams wouldn't be falling all over themselves for Kyrie Irving
if he wasn't all of those things previously listed, but

(40:22):
also crazy, crazy, talented and as much as we wonder.
D'Angelo Russell, a guy who has to have the ball
in his hands, runs a lot of screen. Role playing
with the Golden State Warriors seems like an odd fit,
so too, is not fit with Kyrie Irving going to
the Brooklyn Nets, who had this incredible culture kind of

(40:43):
like Boston did when he was hurt. Let's welcome in
Frank Eye Sola, who of course covers the NBA for
the athletic Who can hear him on Serious x M
NBA Radio Monday through Friday at uh seven am. I
how does how does Kyrie fit with how Brooklyn plays? Well,

(41:04):
it's a it's a great point you bring up, because
they had great chemistry there on the team and they
were developing a great culture. So he's got a lot
to prove because his leadership came into question. He fell
out of favor with his teammates and the coaching staff.
So Kyrie irving and remember too, Doug, He's gonna do
it in year one without Kevin Durant. So he's gonna
have a lot to prove. He's gonna have the ball

(41:26):
in his hands a lot. It's gonna be a challenge
for Kenny Atkinson. But as you know, Kenny has done
a good job with guards. He had Jeremy Lyn in
New York, he developed him, Jeff Teagan, Atlanta, de Angelo
Russell and Brooklyn. But Kyrie is coming to him as
kind of a finished product already. I think it's more
about getting Kyrie, you know, focused and back to being
the player that he was in Cleveland. Which maybe he

(41:46):
won't get back to that until Kevin Durant comes back
in another year. Does Kyrie know? Does he know or
care how he's viewed um by the league and by
its fans. I think that all these players will say
that they don't care. I think part of him does
care about that, And I think you saw that a
lot during the end of the season in the playoffs,

(42:08):
when every press conference kind of the theme was I'm smart,
I'm a great player, and all you guys have a
silly job in the media. That seemed to be the
theme every single time. So I think he does care.
But I also think he's smart enough. I think he
picked Brooklyn knowing Kevin Durant would come there, and I
think he just didn't want to deal with a lot
of the drama that goes on within the Nick organization.
And I'm sure he figures it's gonna be tough enough

(42:30):
playing in New York, trying to get back to a
championship level and doing it in New York on a
team that only at seventeen wins last season, and the
Nick you know organization having one of the you know,
being the losingest team in the NBA. The last nineteen years.
I think he decided that's why I'll go do it
in Brooklyn. So I think he's smart enough to understand that.
All right, Look, I'll point out I'm biased, but I
think I an Eagle is as good at play by

(42:52):
play managers in the country. Right, So they got a
great play by play man, they got a great arena.
They actually have very good recent history, right, They've been
an NBA Finals going back to the when Ed Jason
Kidd and Richard Jefferson and all those guys. But like, look,
you're a lifelong New York or your old New York
sports columnists before working for the Athletic and working for

(43:15):
Serious x M NBA radio, they're what the seventh biggest
franchise in the city, right, Like you go, uh Yankees,
both baseball teams, both football teams, the Knicks and the Rangers. Absolutely,
I think there's something to be said for that. But
I also think you know, that next team that you

(43:37):
mentioned was very popular and listen, the lowest rated finals ever,
by the way, No, I understand that. I also think
it was an entertaining team. So the Nets are in
a position where you kind of have to have stories.
But the Knicks are also kind of there as well.
The Nicks will always do relatively well in the ratings,
and their fan base is always going to be there,
but you know, their fans lose a little bit of

(43:58):
faith there for on you mentioned, you know, the Nets
have been to the finals twice in the last decade.
They've had some great players, you know, Jason Kidd is
a Hall of Famer, Kevin Durant, and Kyrie Irving. Certainly,
Kevin Durant's on his way to being the Hall of Fame,
of Kyrie Irving still has something to prove. But I
think they're making up ground. I think they're also smart
enough to understand where they are in the marketplace and
also understand we're not really competing against the next We're

(44:20):
trying to win a championship here. We can't worry about
the Knicks. I mean, Oklahoma City, aren't they kind of
competing with college football in that town. So everyone kind
of has, you know, where they are in a certain
market place. But I think the Nets long ago decided
there's no sense trying to say that we're we're trying
to be better than the Knicks or more attractive to
local fans. Here. We just have to go about our

(44:41):
business and do it the right way. And they've done
it that way and they finally got rewarded by landing
two players like that. Do you believe the story that
the Knicks weren't offering the full max? I think what
the Knicks were doing? What every team that was interested
in Kevin Durant, the Clippers, the Warriors, and the Nets.
Clearly all of them had to be concerned about his

(45:03):
achilles injury. That's all. I mean that you're you're only
being smart if you're somewhat concerned about that. But I'll
ask you, Doug, If Kevin Durant said came to the
Knicks and said I want to play here, I really
want to be here, will you give me the max contract?
What do you think the Knicks would have done? I
don't know, but I also know that they carry the bias.
How many times did the Knicks signed somebody? Eddie Curry,

(45:26):
Murray Styldermeyer, Penny Hardaway. Um, I mean I can go
through how many how many broken down guys have they
signed in which has come back to bite them? Pryzingis
is a guy that they drafted, but here his body
broke down they didn't see him for a year and
a half. All right, But Doug, then why did you
why do you even want to get a meeting with him?
You know, Kevin Durant is getting a max contract with

(45:47):
with another team. Why did you even bother wanting a
meeting with him when you're not so Kevin Durant. You're
gonna meet with Kevin Durant. By the way, he's not
taking the max with the Nets. I mean, this is
this is like the part that it's the part that
people don't report. And I'm not saying you, I'm saying
people don't report he's not actually because he wants DeAndre
Jordan's to get the ten million dollars, so he's not

(46:09):
taking the max and Kyrie is not taking the max.
So it's like, again, whether it's offered or how you know,
it could be lost in translation. I just I guess
I don't think it's crazy to go like, hey, hold
on a second, are we sure we want to pay
a guy a year to sit and we're not sure
what he's gonna look like when he comes back from injury.
When I was up in Toronto the day that uh
he blew out his achilles the next day, I wrote,

(46:31):
if you're the Knicks, forget about Kevin Durant, like, and
he's gonna be thirty two when he comes back where
you are as an organization, just chuck it up to
being a tough break. But the Knicks wanted Kevin Durant.
I think once they realize it's not gonna happen, it's
easy to kind of fall back and say, well, we
had concerns about his achilles, and absolutely they should they
should have concerns about it. But my I'm of the

(46:52):
belief that if Kevin Durant said, I'll come play there, please,
you know, give me the max the Nicks, you're gonna
do that. Because the Knicks traded per Zingis and the
whole thing was that they were gonna get Kyrie Irving
and Kevin Durant. That that's why they traded prizingis to
get up the contracts of Tim Hardaway Jr. Coordinately opened
up all that salary cap space so they could sign
the two guys, And back then I would have to

(47:13):
believe they had an indication that there was a very
good chance they can get those guys, because if not,
you know, you know, and I know how they spun
it after Prazingis was traded. But you could have gone
into training camp this year with Prezingis and r J
Barrett And who's to say if you had Prezingis on
your roster, and maybe you would have focused all your
attention on maybe getting Kemba Walker. Now you've got Kemba Walker,

(47:34):
Prezingis and r J Barrett. So there's a lot of
different ways that could have gone if they hung onto Prizingis.
Once you didn't. It was all about Kevin Garnett and
and Kyrie Irving and know this tug losing them both
those players to the Nets. That stings. The day that
the Knicks went after Lebron James back nine years ago.
The Knicks got to work that day and there was

(47:56):
a billboard outside the garden the proker Off, the hell
prokeer Off, the owner of the Nets and easy about
the Nets, Big Blueprint and Jim Dolan. It drove him
crazy that the Nets have done that. So he's in
competition with the Nets. So they feel a little burned
that the Nets got the two players they wanted and
the next didn't get them. Okay, what do you think
about Kauai? I mean, I hope. I don't know about you.

(48:17):
I know the league would probably like it. I hope
he doesn't go to the Lakers, just because it would
seem like there's your super team and everyone else is
chasing them. If he goes to the Clippers or stays
in Toronto, then really you can make the case the
NBA is wide open where eight, nine, maybe even ten
teams could win the championship. It makes it more wide
open than ever before. I don't know. You tell me this.
Does Kauai look like the kind of guy that would

(48:40):
join up with Lebron kind of be the third guy
on that team. To me, he doesn't look like that
kind of guy. But Kai is pretty unpredictable, so who
knows what. I also don't think he I think it's
different than Kevin Durant. He doesn't have anything to prove, right, Like, Yeah,
Durant hadn't won one, so people held it against him
because it felt like he was joining a championship team
and for whatever reason, even though he was the best player,

(49:01):
it took him till he got hurt, till people realize
he was the best player. He was the best player
when they won it with the Spurs, he was the
best player with Toronto wasn't close, and if he joins them,
it doesn't seem I don't think it matters as much
to whatever legacy that he has. Yeah. I also think Doug,
like Kauai, did a loss for his image during the playoffs.

(49:21):
He kind of comes across as like a bit of
a quirky guy and there's something about him that's kind
of cool. His image now, I don't think he's ever
been better after what happened last year in San Antonio,
and for like now he looks like the coolest guy.
Now you're gonna go join Lebron James and Anthony Davis
in l A. I don't know. It's just I think
the Clippers Toronto. I think that would be better for
the league. And I hope he stays in Toronto be

(49:42):
cause they could certainly make one more run at it
next year. UM kind of like how Boston bounced back.
It looked bad for Boston, and I don't think Kimba
is as good as Kyrie, but he may fit in
better and they avoid a terrible contract with Al Horford.
I like Boston. I don't understand what the Sixers are doing. Yeah,

(50:02):
and I think I mean, look at the contract that
they're giving Tobias Harris. I think Tobias Harrison was in
a great situation because Philadelphia gave away all those assets.
They had to go out and get Jimmy Button. Tobias
Harrison go for it last year, so you traded in
all those assets and Jimmy Button is gonna leave, so
you're trying to salvage that deal by doing a sign
and trade was selected that you know, they were in
a position where they probably felt they had to resign

(50:24):
Tobias Harris. They lose some shooting with J. J. Reddick leaving.
I think Al Horford is certainly gonna help in years
one and two. And you know this, the Celtics wanted
to keep Al Harford, they just didn't want to give
him a four year deal. And clearly Al Harford, when
he left the Celtics knew that somebody out there was
going to give him a four year deal, So this
was something he had known before he decided to opt
out of his deal and not resigned with the Boston Celtics.

(50:46):
But I think in year one it might not be
the worst thing for Philadelphia, but it'd be interesting to
see how Al Horford is in year three and four
of this contract, No, no question about it, especially when
you're talking about thirty million dollars al Horford at thirty
five and thirty six years old. You can listen to
him on Sirius sex m NBA Radio, read his work
in the athletics seam on TV as well. He's the
one and only Frankie solo. Frank thanks so much for

(51:08):
joining us, Hey, dou thanks a lot. Pleasure is all mine.
Did the Nicks do the right thing by passing up
on Kevin Durant? Another New Yorker Peter Vesti, longtime NBA inside,
he'll join us until us next. Be sure to catch
live editions of the Doug dot Leap Show weekdays in
noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and

(51:29):
the I Heart Radio app Doug Got Live Show Fox
Sports Radio. Yesterday seemed to be kind of a momentous day,
right and today or tomorrow or we'll sometime next week
will be as well. I mean, think about it. You
have a two time finals m v P who won't
even play for a year or most of a year,

(51:49):
who uh change places again second time in his career
in Kevin during esterday and today you have this seed
or whatever Kahi letter decides, you may have these sitting
NBA finals m v P. Who decides to go elsewhere?
Peter vest has been covering the the NBA for a
long time, kind of to spend some time this year

(52:10):
on the Doug Gotli Show on Fox Sports Radio. What
what's your reaction to not the Knicks the Brooklyn Nets
landing two superstars in free agency? Um, not as impressed
as everybody else. You've got You've got a guy who
you have no idea here what kind of player he's

(52:31):
going to be when he recovers from his uh Achilles rupture.
And another guy who bailed out of Cleveland because for
whatever reasons. You know, he changes his mind almost every day,
then commits to verbally commits Boston, then not and uh,

(52:53):
you know my reaction, my reaction to him leaving the
Celtics is you mean you mean he left them flat? Yeah?
You got you got yet got? Yeah? Okay, you know,
I don't you know, he's heard a lot. He seems
he seems like a you know, I knew him a
little bit but when he was coming up, but I, uh,

(53:17):
I don't know what's in his mind. I know, he
thinks he's the smartest guy in the room, the court,
the world. So to me, you've broken up a team
that I really liked everybody on it and camaraderie was great,
chemistry was great. They were on their way up. And

(53:37):
now you've got a center to replace your young guy
who's who's terrific. In mine opinion, I like the Angelo,
you know, despite the fact he got you know, court
Holden this summer, this is the spring um. But I
like him until he's improved immensely. I would have gone
with that team. I would have added, you know, if

(53:57):
they had added uh to buy As Harris to that
next because he's a he's a real team player, I'd say, yeah, great,
they're on their way. But you know, just to have
two players on the marquee that you can brag about,
you know, let's see what happens. You know, they lost,
they lost not only at the ende of well, they
lost Ed Davis, who went to Utah. I mean, terrific

(54:21):
role player, terrific, great, great rebounding per minutes. I mean
he must be, you know, near the top of the NBA.
He just let him go. So so he's gonna listen
to uh Kyrie's gonna listen to uh Atkinson when he
brushed off Stevens. We'll see about that. You know, as

(54:42):
far as Durant goes, you know, obviously how can you
not be a fan of his? But how how do
you know? This is not young? I know Dominique came
back from it might have been the only one of
his height, you know, weightier than Durant from an Achilles,
and was was really good at that age. But to me, I,
you know, I think that they did the right thing,

(55:03):
but cast it on. They've already done that. They've done that,
you know with a MARII they got screwed. Now they're
going to bring in a guy who's who you can't
you can't get medical insurance on his on his achilles. Nah.
So that's my that's my stage, which which don't listen.
I just see you know, Peter and you obviously don't

(55:23):
know this is uh that's I started the show saying,
I don't think it's crazy. You know, from Amari to
Eddie Amory to Eddie Curry to Katino, mobile had the
hard thing right, Like you could go back through anybody
who knows the Knick's last twenty years. No, there's a
bunch of guys that they have been they've they've been
sold the Brooklyn Bridge before, right, and guys in terms
of their health. I understand it. But the problem is

(55:45):
that that Dolan elicits so many negative feelings in people
that people like, wow, Jim Dolan doing stuff again. Yeah. Well, um,
those same people will fill the garden to capacity every night.
So what can you say about them? Um? You know,
I don't know if we want to switch to the Knicks.

(56:06):
I guess we do. I don't. I don't understand anything
they did. Okay, I like Randall and uh and I'm
like who they got to Gibson and they got who
they've got the other Power Forward from Chicago. Yeah, I
like him a lot. I think he's I think he's

(56:29):
you know, he's in the Charles Oakley mold as far
as you know, being ferocious and stuff. But why just
signed three Power Forwards? What is that? You know? They're
they're putting powerful and they had a couple already, so
they're putting Power Forwards together like the Warriors are putting
guards together. You know, I understand Russell. They need Russell

(56:54):
while Thompson's congalescing. But I don't I think they could
have on that a lot cheaper. What are your long
time maybe inside Peter Vesti joining us in the dug
got them show? Fox Sports Radio? What are you hearing
on Kauai? Um? I don't. I don't hear anything because
I'm not working anymore. But uh, you know, going back

(57:17):
a year and when everybody was saying that he wouldn't
play with Lebron James, you know I wrote a column
saying he absolutely wouldn't. There was no since these people
are making this up, so now they're still saying. I mean,
like a few days ago, I think Rick Buga said
he's not what he's gonna play with? What's he gonna

(57:39):
say when it happens? But um, you know, I think
this is a strong chance he could play there, and um,
you know that that would be an unbelievable team. But again,
you've got old big men, you got really no no
top top flight guards enough to sell it in. Um,
could be a problem, but hey, I don't care where

(58:00):
Quie gocause I'm rooting for that team. I love his game,
I love his attitude lost Domina and you know, if
the Lakers look out, I wrote the other day, and
we're gonna last. I'm on Twitter now. But you know,
when I had my column, I wrote, the Genie bus
felt she was gonna get him all along. Now what
made her think that? Not tampering, that's for sure, But

(58:24):
she had a dream. Genie had a dream. That's funny.
But did he did he dream of Genie? I don't know.
Let's talk about that. So look, I Peter Vesti joining
us for a long time columnists with the New York Post,
for example. And you know, my dad used to my
late father used to drive twenty minutes to go pick
up the paper to read your column. You can attest

(58:45):
to this. You can attest to this. We live in
southern California, so that's why you had to drive so far.
You can attest to this that the Nets are essentially
like the seventh biggest pro sports franchise in the Tri
state area. Right if you put both baseball teams, both
football teams, the Knicks and probably the Rangers ahead of them.

(59:06):
So the whole thing, the whole experiment is curious, right, Like,
here's two guys in Durant and in Kyrie, who think
of themselves as having this kind of forward thinking business acumen,
and they're going to a team that already has a
pre established culture that is different at least than what

(59:27):
Kyrie how Kyrie usually likes to play. You're not gonna
have Kevin Durant. And I think you're expecting the fanfare
of New York and you're in Brooklyn with the nets,
which is gonna get overshadowed by the Giants and the Jets,
and already overshadowed by the Yankees. Like, how do you
think it all marks? First of all, who cares about
the other sports? I mean, it's strictly a Knicks nets thing, right,

(59:50):
And that's never had any any chance to be to
be on equal footing except when Julius Hervant was coming
supposedly coming into the NBA with the nets and they
sold of the silly you know, since then maybe two
years you know, when kids took them to the finals twice,
Um that they had some nash but um, you know,

(01:00:12):
they could fill that arena, They could fill it. It's
a great place to go. It's uh, you know, easily accessible.
But you don't have to come to Brooklyn to get
what you're talking about. Durant. Durant has been a marketing stud.
You know where he is, and and uh these guys
get intoendorsements, you don't have to. That's old school talk
that you've got to come to New York. I read it.

(01:00:33):
I read it in the Post the other day. You know,
I just threw it up in the air and said,
these guys like twenty years behind the times. When when
they went to Lebron who was a free agent and
Cleaveland the Knicks and they put that on the table
in front of him. I mean, if somebody in the
room told me he like scoffed, like what I'm gonna

(01:00:54):
come down for endorsements and what seriously He's like, get please,
get out please. They he hardly looked at him the
whole meeting. So you know, these you know one thing
I don't think anybody's talked about. But I'm suspecting. I
don't know, but I knew for a fact that they
were ready to commit the full full max to to

(01:01:15):
Duran And then he got hurt, and uh so so
did they announced? They announced they you know he wants Okay, fine,
I get it, but I'm just wondering what would have
happened if Kyrie and decided to come to the Knicks
with him. With that, with that have changed, and that's

(01:01:36):
that's probably why I gave them. They're like, look, we
know Kyrie is not coming. Now we can we can
make you said, we can make you say no right
right hard? Yea, Peter, Okay, Peter, great stuff, man, We
gotta run. We appreciate you join us so much, awesome
thoughts on the NBA. Let me just say something. I
loved McLeod stuff by the way, loved it. Oh, thank you.

(01:01:59):
I appreciate that. I appreciate it. Thank he was a
good man. I appreciate Peter VESTI joining us. Doug. He's
talking about some stuff I did on John McCleod when
my former coach passed away. He was former coach of
the Knicks, of course, and Peter covered him there covering
with the Dallas Maverick. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Doug dot Leap Show weekdays at noon eastern
three pm Pacific. Buyer, have you seen Clay Thompson's Instagram page? Yes? Yes,

(01:02:23):
did you know what movie that's from? Yeah? Wolf of
Wall Streets. Did you know it? Because you've seen the
Wolf of Wall Street or it was listed as Wolf
And I did see that movie. I don't remember much
from it, but I did see it. Jonah Jonah Hill
is was the unit. Jonah Hill was in it. Yes,
he was not the main character. He was the No,
that would be Leonardo DiCaprio. Jonah Hill had the remarkably

(01:02:45):
white teeth. He had the remarkably fake white teeth in there.
That it was just it was a weird, weird look
or whatever. There was a little bit of glorification of uh,
you know, of the Wolf of Wall Street, which wasn't great,
but that particular scene was pretty Awesomehow like, that's how
you announced your staying right. Excellent work by Clay by

(01:03:06):
Clay Thompson. Wow, it's it does seem like a couple
of people react are agreeing with me on the necks.
You know, look, and I understand there there are calculated
risks that you take if you're the Nets. Like, look,
you're the Nets, and no matter how good your culture is,
you keep banging your head and like you gotta at

(01:03:26):
some point go for it. Right, there's what we've been doing.
No no fear shirts. Here's one again for people who
don't aren't following. There used to be there are sports
t shirts basically, and the company was called No Fear,
and they used to have kind of cliche sports sayings

(01:03:47):
on the back. Here's one and it fits the nets
and why they were right to do what they did.
Great culture, good young players, and spent some financial assets
and some other assets in an effort to be great
not good. You ready for the No Fear shirt? See
if you saw this one, He who dies with the
most toys still dies. And the idea of it is like, look,

(01:04:16):
what's the point of having cap space, what's the point
of being in New York and in this incredible growing
time in Brooklyn? And oh yeah, by the way, the
Nicks are down, step on their throat, step on their throat.
And if you can step on their throat when they're

(01:04:37):
down and take over the city, maybe maybe you can
become the basketball franchise of the city. I don't think
it's likely, but it's at least possible. It's at least possible. Um, yes,
John Romos, how can I hurt? A lot of people

(01:04:58):
saying on Twitter and heads talking hands, say, hey, of
Kevin Durant, I'll take that. I don't care if he's hurt.
I mean, I'll take who wouldn't take Kevin Durant, I
mean even just hurt. And all of a sudden, it's like, well,
that's why we didn't want him, because he's hurt and
we don't know he's gonna come back. Like, how did
that change all of a sudden? Was it just like
that was just something we were saying, or was that

(01:05:20):
something that people thought not? You know, well, how did
it change that people were like saying, hey, I'll take
eighty percent of Kevin Durant. Who would and I mean
he's the best player in the n b A. I mean,
it's okay, he'll be back. And now you're saying that
the Knicks were saying, hey, I can't really trust Kevin Durant.

(01:05:40):
I know, you know, I agree with don't. I don't know. Look,
I never DeMarcus Cousins. DeMarcus Here's here's a example. DeMarcus
Cousins put up a lot of numbers on bad teams
for a long time, but he was an All star
center or the world freaked out, freaked out when he

(01:06:01):
signed that mid level exception with the Golden State Warriors
last year. People said, it's over. Forget about it. It's
a wrap, right. DeMarcus Cousins sat out for a year.
He didn't come back until March. How do he look?

(01:06:23):
He looked like a shell of his former self. Have
you noticed what name has not crossed as having signed
as a free agent? DeMarcus Cousins? Why do you? Why
do we think that is? Wes Matthews was just just
just signed with the Milwaukee Bucks for a minimum contract.

(01:06:44):
Do you guys, do you guys remember what happened to
West Matthews. He tore his achilles tendon before he was
a free agent side with the Dallas Mavericks and has
never been the same. So I said, when he tore it,
I do think it's changes everything. Now. Look, I'll also
tell you I'm of the belief that if there's a

(01:07:05):
guy who could come back and be the same player,
Katie's that guy. Here's my This is a very non
scientific scientific way of looking at right. When you tear
your achilles tendon, the first thing is how much do
you weigh? Is a big deal. If you have a
tency to gain weight, then one injury becomes two becomes three.

(01:07:27):
That's one of the things that's happened with DeMarcus Cousins.
If you're one of those guys. Darren Williams, for example,
former point guard in the NBA. Remember he had all
kinds of ankle problems. Darren Ways biggest problem was he
had what they call the fat gene in the NBA,
Like if he wasn't working out, if he wasn't in season,
he just had tendency to put on weight. And when
you put on weight, that's when your body kind of

(01:07:48):
breaks down. Body is set that kind of knows what
weight it should play at, and if it's out of
weight five towns heavier, that gets multiplied several times over
because of the mount of torque and force um every
time you cut, every time you jump, more importantly, every
time you land. Every time he jumps one thing, it's landing.
That's really the problem. So, uh, Katie is not somebody

(01:08:13):
who puts on weight. A lot of rehabbing it from
injuries is how hard do you rehab Because from the
second you have your surgery, if you aren't a fanatic
about rehabbing, you just can't get back that time. I've
had buddies that have rehabed major injuries and all I'm
like man, I wish I would rehab harder. And he

(01:08:36):
is a fanatic about his workouts, so he doesn't put
on weight. He is a fanatic about workouts. He has
been hurt before, although it was a foot and this
is different. But I do think that he'll still get
after it and really rehab the right way. And his game,
though he's explosive for a seven footer, it's not like
he's a blur like not. His game isn't based upon

(01:08:59):
Kenny up jump out of the ceiling, jump through the
ceiling right, It's just not. It's based upon um. If
he has a miss, but if he has a big guy,
can he go by him? If he has a guard,
can he shoot over him? And I don't think that
changes all that much. All of that said, my belief
is Kevin Durant has a great chance to be back

(01:09:19):
the same or a slightly lesser player. All that said,
if you can't ensure his contract, that's what happened with
Eddie Curry. Eddie Curry came up from the Bulls. Isaiah
Thomas is the president is signed to a big contract.
It's not insurable. What does that mean? Okay, if you're
if a guy gets hurt and he misses a season.

(01:09:41):
The NBA team is not if they're almost all insured,
is not on the hook to pay that contract. It's
the insurance company is on the hook. But they've already
had a Marie Stotdomarro wasn't insured and Eddie Curry wasn't insured,
and those contracts we're not good ones. So I just

(01:10:01):
think that people doesn't understand the business of sport, or
the history with the New York Knicks might have overlooked
how that was an issue. John, there's your answer coming
up next. What will the Warriors do with DiAngelo Russell?
We'll discuss next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports
talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows

Broadcasting live from the studios of Fox Sports Radio. Here's
Doug Godlieb Doug godli Show, Fox Sports Radio. Uh, I'm
gonna put a question out there to take phone calls
on probably next hour eight seven seven nine nine on

(01:10:45):
Fox eight seven seven nine nine one Fox. Here. Here's
here's the question, Warriors are going to retire Kevin Durant's Jersey. Okay,
And what I said was like, man, three years kind
of a spell. Actually, when it's not like in the NFL,
when you have a five year career, six year career, whatever,
you play three years, three incredible years, you win two titles. Um,

(01:11:10):
he'll play twenty years in the NBA three years with
the Warriors, Like it seems a little and especially to
announce it now is like we're going over the top.
We feel really, we feel really bad about about you
tearing your achilles tendon, which I've told you I have
a very powerful doctor. Friends, like thought it was partially

(01:11:31):
torn before you retured. Anyway, whether it's guilt or the
success or whatever, he should Is it too soon? And
then be if it's too soon? Max Hazard, who is
a basketball player for the University of Arizona, ask me
a good question on Twitter. All right, what about Lebron

(01:11:51):
only four years in Miami? Should he have his number retired?
We'll get to that next hour, plus the real reason
k D and Steph Curry we're friendly, but not boys
every day. This time, we'd like to get to a
previous show on Fox Sports Radio Fox Sports when we
call it and now the Fox say this was Mark

(01:12:15):
Stein from The New York Times, longtime NBA insider on
the Day and Patrick Show earlier today talking about the
D'Angelo Russell trade. Next year, their season is going to
be so fascinating because basically this is all about the future.
D'Angelo Russell doesn't fit there what soever. This was exactly
how you describe it. They just wanted to make sure

(01:12:37):
that they did not see Kevin Durant, arguably the best
player in the league, went healthy, walk out the door
for nothing. They got a twenty three year old All
Star and they will trade him. It's just a matter
of when do they keep him for a whole season?
Do they even trade him at mid season? But you know,
Stephen Curry and Clay Thompson, you might have heard of them,

(01:12:58):
they're pretty pretty renowned back those guys aren't going anywhere,
so they're really isn't move There isn't room for for Genel. Obviously,
Clay is going to miss the bulk of next season.
So in the short term, yes, but this was really
about the Warriors protecting themselves for the future and next season.
This first season in this new palace they're they've built

(01:13:18):
in San Francisco, it's really all about setting them up
for the future. They want to be able in year
two to move forward at the level that we've been
accustomed to watching them for the last five years. Interesting. Basically,
he's a he's a seat holder right at the at
the oscars, here's sitting, or he's and tonight. For this year,

(01:13:41):
the role of Kevin Durant, a guy who holds the
ball a little bit longer than everybody else in the Warriors,
will be played by DiAngelo Russell. It's just about just
about assets. As long as you don't say that Joe
Lacob was the owner. Can we say that he's the
owner of the Warriors and that he owns No, he's

(01:14:02):
the governor and Deangel Russell is an asset. Very important distinction.
I was curious of it myself because if you know
the Warriors, the Warriors have the lowest pick and roll
rate in the NBA over the last five years since
Steve Kirk got there. Now, I think some of that

(01:14:22):
will change as they'll be unable to play that Hampton
five lineup with Andre Goodalagne Livingston's probably gone, obviously, Clay
has gone for a while, and so is k D.
To be hard to play that lineup, and when you're
playing with a big guy, that's when you can have
more pick and roll, even if that's not technically traditionally
how they played. And I do think that some more

(01:14:43):
screen role action can actually help Steph Curry because you
bring a big guy in now a sudden, he can
beat a five man more readily. But in addition to
ultimately being trade bait, de'anzel Russell can play some point
and can play the basketball much the way that Steph
Curry does. Like he's needed. But this is a gap

(01:15:06):
year for the Golden State Warriors, so instead of traveling
Europe with a backpack on, they're simply going to traverse
the NBA with Di'anzelo Russell on. All Right, we gotta
we got This is an awesome show you guys have built. Uh,
Jim Jackson's gonna join us from Fox Sports one longtime
NBA veteran. We've already had Frankie Sola, Chris Haynes, Peter

(01:15:28):
Vessey already on the show. I got thoughts for you
on the Knicks and why I'm actually cool with them
kind of doing the St. Louis Cardinals to Albert Poolholes
type of thing. That's what it feels like to me.
By the way, Kevin Durant did not take the Max.

(01:15:52):
I can't believe that the Knicks didn't offer Kevin Durant
the Max. You do know that he didn't actually take
the Max from the Nets. Huh? Interesting? Right? All right,
we got that to get to you. Plus, I have
the real, easy and honest explanation how Kevin Durant can
walk away from the Golden State Warriors. It did, in

(01:16:13):
fact come down to the fact that he and Steph
weren't that close. Why not? Simple explanation I'll share with
the next in The Doug Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug dot
Leap Show weekdays at noon eastern three pm Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio a app.
What Up Doug Gotleap Show, Fox Sports Radio. Wow, really

(01:16:40):
awful news. Share with you in a second. Doug Gotlip
Show is brought to you by Farmers and Farmers. We've
seen almost everything, so we know how to cover almost anything.
When it's game time, have an experienced player help me
stay at the game, put their experience and play at
Farmers dot com. We are farmers. Terrible news. Tyler Scaggs,

(01:17:02):
twenty seven year old left handed pitcher, uh dies and
we don't we don't know what he died of. Right, awful, awful,
And then you know when it's your um, when it's
your baseball club, and obviously makes you even sadder. A
lefty and my son and lefty, we watched Tyler every

(01:17:23):
time he pitches. He and Andrew Haney every time he
pitches for the Angels. But that game is canceled tonight.
And this has happened a couple of times in baseball.
It's actually happened with the Angels. Remember Nick Adenhart, who
was their top prospect, who um who got a new
car accident right that one was crazy. He was the

(01:17:48):
best prospect in the Angels organization. He was um and
he I think he had a no decision in like
um in an early game. Then he got a car
accident right after midnight, just hours after being a starting pitcher.
So Nick aiden Hard that was like a decade ago,

(01:18:09):
and then today Tyler Skaggs passed away at the age
of twenty seven years old. Just awful. Well, yes, yeah,
this is apparently sudden news as well. Just because of
the Angels releasing this information on their social media page.
They had released their lineup. They already had their lineup
set and was sent out about an hour or two

(01:18:32):
ago for tonight's game that was scheduled, as he said,
you know, to start in about three hours, but that's
been canceled. So this news just just coming in about
Tyler Skaggs. Yeah. So I mean, again, it's not not
fair to speculate over, you know, but I mean, obviously
it means it was just I mean, I'm a terrible surprise,

(01:18:53):
main shock. But they but you the reason Dan, I
believe you're saying they put in their lineup was no
one knew until just like they just found out, yes, correct,
Which reminds you of what was the picture Daryll Darryll
Kyle right where they tried to go wake him up
for the game and they just passed away in his sleep. Man.

(01:19:15):
Darryll Kyle and Joe Buck passed away within like the
same week of each other with St. Louis and Jack
but Jack Buck Camps I'm sorry, apology, Jack Buck. Yeah,
Jack Buck passed away. Um. I went to a Cardinals
game like that week and there was just a you know,
half a bush. Stadium was covered in flowers with and

(01:19:36):
Darryll and and Darrell Kyle was an all Hee was
like a three time All Star. He's a really good picture.
I don't remember if he was. He was having a
good year. Um, not that that, not that actually matters whatever.
But he died like a heart attack. Um. So it's
weird because I don't I can't think of this happening

(01:19:58):
in basketball, right, I can think of, Uh, what was
his name, Wesley who died of a car in a
car accident? Um? Was it? Bobby Fils, Bobby Fils, sorry,
Bobby feels. Bobby Fills with the Charlotte Hornets. They were
like racing car. They were like racing each other right
after practice or something like that, I want to say.

(01:20:19):
And Bobby Feels, I remember, crashed his car and passed away.
But it does make you think, like, all right, let's
get to talking about sports, because real life can suck.
And this is the perfect example. Year old Mary dude
um picture for the Angels. You know Lefty, which means

(01:20:40):
he was gonna play Major League baseball until he decided
to not play anymore. That's the beauty to being left
handed and being good at your job, and well, I
just I don't know what the other under on too
long or too short is? Twenty seven is way way
way too short. Terrible news, terrible news. So take breath,

(01:21:00):
and I'm not trying to be insensitive, but like it's
not I'm not gonna it's an Angel's terrible news sports show.
The news that everybody's talking about in sports is well,
free agency. We're still waiting on Kawai Leonard. And it
would be fascinating, be fascinating if things that you had

(01:21:23):
previously heard, some from me but mostly from other people
proved to be false. Boston doesn't get free agents. Well,
actually Boston got Al Horford before they got Gordon Hayward,
and then yesterday they got Kemba Walker. They don't get
free agents. Those are three all stars. I mean Kemma

(01:21:46):
Walker's third team on NBA. Whether he should have been
or not not not the point of the discussion. What
was they got him? No one chooses the nets over
the next. Well, that happened twice yesterday, and nobody wants
to play with Lebron James. That one could be proven
false if Kauai Leonard chooses to join the Lakers, which

(01:22:08):
is now in question. And what's interesting about that one
is apparently Kauai has asked, hey, can I bring some
of my guys with me? To which if your Genie
buss the answer is, bring anybody you want. We don't care, right,
don't care, have at it. You got your own personal

(01:22:30):
assais cool? You want to do the dual, the double
locker room, double locker thing that Barry Bonds used to do,
go for it, Go for it. But Kevin Ramp being
in Brooklyn seems at least a little bit curious. Why
leave Golden State? Why leave for the unknown? Could it

(01:22:53):
be the curiosity of Brooklyn? Sure, I'm just I'll be honest.
Like if you've been in new Work, you've I've I've
wandered the streets. But like every every different area has
a different field, there's an energy to it. And Brooklyn
is a cornucopia of cultures, a potpourri of smells and
ideas and thoughts and and hopes. It's it's really cool,

(01:23:19):
not even putting on the front. I think it's a
really really cool place. I think it's odd that a
team that felt like they were close and had a
great culture would add Kyrie who was seen as a
cultural killer, and KD who can't play for a year.
But you're Brooklyn, you gotta take chances. I guess it
makes sense. There's this article from The Athletic, and I

(01:23:43):
think it's really explainable and understandable why KD never felt
like he was part of the Warriors. So look, he
comes in and steps the two time VP. He comes
in and Steph is beloved, Clay's quirky, Clay's single or dating.

(01:24:09):
But Clay also came into the Warriors with Steph Curry.
They had been through the Wars together and so their
relationship was like their splash brothers and KD didn't really
have and off the court relationship. They were friends. They

(01:24:29):
were friendly, they were college collegial, they were colleagues, but
they weren't boys. And the easy explanation is their lifestyle.
K D single, We're not married with no kids. Steph
Curry keeps popping out kids. His wife is Uh, has

(01:24:51):
her own TV shows, she has her own cookbooks, and
they do everything and anything together and their family. Both
families are su for super tight. K D and his
family are super tight, and so is Steph Curry. But
there is different in different phases in life. If you
have kids and you have friends that don't have kids,

(01:25:14):
you know that your relationship probably isn't as strong as
people who you have who have kids. My closest friends
in Connecticut, we we lived in two different parts of Connecticut, Like,
we have friends to the Costers and uh our daughters

(01:25:34):
are the same age our oldest daughters and then they
have a younger daughter. How do I meet them? We
did a my little gym class. There's like gymnastics apparatus is,
you know, And I think the kids were like three
years old to two years old or whatever. And then
La was the oldest. Hate was the baby and she

(01:25:56):
was actually in a car seat. She would fall asleep
in class. And then she made Google eys Like that's
how we met my wife and I met Kara, and
then John became our friend. Why because of kids? Like
if you have kids, the families you hang out with
are usually parents of kids that you play sports with.

(01:26:18):
Or if you grew up in an area right, Well,
Katie and didn't grew up there. He'd only been there
for three years. Steph Curry had kind of grown up
as a young adult there, had gotten married, there had kids, there,
lived in a family area. There's just two different ships

(01:26:39):
passing in the night. And they practiced together, they traveled together,
but they weren't best friends. And it's something that Kady
yearns for. K D is better off when everybody kind
of that's what they used to do in Oklahoma City,
that's what he was used to. But they were all

(01:26:59):
in that time of life where they didn't have kids.
And one of the kind of breaks between he and
Russell was Russell now has kids. So I think it's
understandable that they weren't. They weren't. They weren't enemies, and
they were friends, but they weren't boys. And it wasn't

(01:27:23):
because of jealousy over attention, and it wasn't because of
whose team it was. It was just because there are
two different, two people in very different stages of life,
even though they're both superstars in the basketball floor, playing
for the same team and having both made a ton
of money and earned a rightful amount of immense respect.

(01:27:45):
What are you doing after the game? I'm going home?
What are you doing after the game? I'm going out
see you tomorrow? Is that any that simple? NBA veterans
an analyst Jim Jackson joins the show. Does he think
Kyrie and k d will succeed in Brooklyn? Plus does

(01:28:08):
Kauai end up with the Lakers? The Clippers are staying
in Toronto? And did Brooklyn upgrade? Even if no one
believes that Kemba is better than Kyrie, I'll ask him next.
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug dot
Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific. He's
a longtime NBA veteran, former lottery pick All American in

(01:28:30):
high school and college and now he's uh he doesn't
age on television, whatever venue or whatever network he's working for. Uh, well,
he's one of our own. He's Jim Jackson. Just saw
him on Fox Sports One. Let speak for yourself. He's
kind of have to spend some time this year on
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Most surprising
thing from yesterday to you? Uh, most surprising up? I

(01:28:57):
don't know, honestly, I don't know if I'm supp rise.
Maybe the Jimmy Butler And that was today with all
the talk of him wanting to go somewhere to win,
when at the end of the day the Sixers weren't
going to offer that match, and he had to figure out,
you know, where to go get his money to me
because Miami was never in the conversation they talked about

(01:29:18):
a little bit before, but as far as like something
that kind of this wasn't expecting probably, but Miami did
a great job of unloading some money to be able
to make it happen. Yeah, no, it's it's really really interesting.
Um So, how does that change the Kauai thing? Right?
Wasn't wasn't the story that all right, well we'll get
Jimmy Butler and Kair somebody else to go with. Why

(01:29:41):
do you think is that? What is that what changes
Kauai's perception of what what the Clippers would be. I
was just talking to somebody about that, because you think
about it now, if you go to the Clippers and
I love Doc Rivers and you know what they're building
there right now, the culture is great, but you don't
have an help so you might as well just stay

(01:30:02):
in Toronto when you have a really good chance to
repeat running again at least get back to the championship.
Or I'm not a big advocate of going to the Lakers,
but I don't see where the Clippers make the most
sense now that you don't have that second person with
you that was ensure that at least you can get

(01:30:22):
a deep run in the Western Conference and maybe get
to a final. Why actually a big proponent of the Lakers. Well,
I mean, I just I love I love the heart
of the competition. I wasn't mad at Kevin Durant when
he went there because he has a decision he has
to make. I just love to see competitions. I mean,
the best players spread out a little bit more, just
as big see the competition. But I understand though I'm

(01:30:44):
not one of those owner doesn't Well back to the day,
I never would have that. Well, these guys are different.
The Kyrie Katie thing was a situation where because they're
such great friends that in New York, they figured since
they weren't they weren't getting Kyrie and he wasn't coming.
So I did it, you know what I mean, I
get it, But I just you know, for Kauai, he's

(01:31:06):
won in San Antonio. Okay, he's done something that we
didn't think would be done, which is in Toronto to
win it. Um, so he set us out pretty good.
I just you know, if he goes to the lakes
A good for him, But I was thinking maybe the
Clippers could could be more intriguing just because of what's
going on and probably back at the at the Raptors. Yeah,

(01:31:28):
you're the interestanding thing is like, I get it if
you if you roll out there with Kauai, Anthony Davis,
KU's and Lebron, it's pretty impressive. But are they gonna
any guards, Like, there's a lot of similar there's there's
some similarities to I get you. I guess you can
switch everything. You got Anthony Davis defending the rim, but

(01:31:49):
they are there's there are gonna play one basketball if
they do that, right, are they gonna institute a new
rule where several basketball No, you know it's it'll be
interesting with you because you still got to fill out
the pieces of the puzzle. I mean there's a Kyle
Cover fitting that equations. You know they were looking really
um J. J. Reddick at one point, but also Steth Curry.
Those guys are off the boards. You still gotta fill
out the roster. I still believe you still need to

(01:32:11):
play making point guard at some point. Uh, when Lebron
is not in the game, you still need someone to facilitate.
So it's still a lot of questions to be answered there,
you know, if Kauai chooses to go to to l
a UM, but you do need to still build it up.
Ain't gonna keep in mind this too. The health. You know,
Kauai sat out this year or some games. We knew

(01:32:33):
he would know he was coming back off the injury.
But Anthony Davis, you know, injury prone. So what happens
as you move further, you know, into the season, is
this something that pops back up? And that's why that
the roster that filling out the rest of those roster
spots are very very important. I actually think this would
be that would be the one roster where it wouldn't
be like you could rotate where Lebron's off one night.

(01:32:55):
E d s off one night, is off one night.
Then they all play together like you could. You could
do that kind of rotation a little bit and it
might not be as rough. Although I'm with you, you know,
they still have the mid level exception. Although I don't
know who they're going to spend it on. They don't
have a lot of they don't have a lot of
wiggle room in regards to what they can pay for
a quality, some quality. That's what I think you're talking about. Two.

(01:33:18):
You can probably need some quality, you know, on their
roster as well. Will the Celtics be better? Look, I
would tell you Kyrie is better than Kemba. But with
the Celtics be better with Kemba than they were with Kyrie? Well,
you know they answer to that one. I mean they're
gonna be. I would think that they would be better
from a continuity perspective. I think from a personal relationship perspectives,

(01:33:40):
everything I've heard about Kimba as there's been glowing in
regards to the leader that he is owning off the court,
just the kind of dynamic person that he is that
it's not just about himself. And I'm not saying fits
in that, but some guys know how to lead. I
love Kimba. When he came out of Yukon, I thought
the Knicks passing up on him was a huge mistake.
A lot of people question his ability to to be

(01:34:01):
a I think a point guard that can impact the game. Unfortunately,
and Charlotte, he just didn't have the tools around him.
I think that's a tremendous upgrade from a leadership perspective,
maybe not talent the leadership, but also thu, I think
one more year with Brad Stevens understanding how to control
and deal with egos. That that to me is because

(01:34:24):
during the course of the season long NBA season always
say you manage minutes, injuries and egos during the course
of the season. Once you get to the playoffs, that's
when you really dig into the extra game planning. But Brad,
I think in documentation and dealing with guys with egos
and how to manage it, I think he'll get better

(01:34:46):
at that as well, which you could help the self.
Does Kyrie and new Kyrie and k D work in Brooklyn?
I bring that up because like you do NBA games
all the time, and you know that that people in
the NBA were like, man, the nets aren't that good,
but they sure like playing against playing with each other,
and and and you know Kenny Atkinson system is one

(01:35:07):
which whoever is in the game ton guys are shooting threes,
having fun. There was great chemistry and camaraderie. Now you
don't have k D for a probably a year, you
got Kyrie, Like, does that all work? That's that's a
that's a great question. One thing I would We were
talking about this on Fox today FS one to speak
for yourself, and Jason was like, you know, Woodlock and

(01:35:29):
some of the guys, you don't think it's gonna work.
I said, well, you know, I think the difference is
and they made a group point And when I said that,
I said, because k D and Kyrie is such great friends,
it is different. Kyrie wasn't friends when le Bron. When
le Bron came in, Lebron kind of came in and
took and stole the show away from from Kyrie. Kyrie
wasn't friends with guys when he went to Boston, but

(01:35:50):
he really has friends with Katie, so that respect level
I think will allow them to navigate through some of
the tough times that occurred during the course of the season.
Now people always say friends shouldn't work together. I get it,
but sometimes those relationships works because the respect level is there.
So to me, I'm leaning more towards now. We don't

(01:36:10):
know what's gonna happen because this year Kyrie is going
to be there without Katie. How he comes back, I
think it's important as far as from this injury, you know,
at what percentages are we seeing Katie because I think
that has a major role in how Kyrie views his
position on the court and his you know, job and
what he has to do. So it's a lot of

(01:36:32):
factors into what's going on. But on the surface, I'd
like to think that because they're great friends work Yeah,
I don't know, but I agree that they're great friends.
But sometimes being great friends actually can backfire, right, But
that's what I'm saying. I agree with you on that.
I think Katie being a little bit older, hopefully more mature,

(01:36:52):
that helps that. I'm just saying that I think that
it could have an impact on how they do play.
But I do agree that sometimes being as you know
each other too good, too well, and that get back. Yeah, Okay,
So um, let's say let's say Kauai stays in Toronto.
Who's the favorite in the West Toronto and you mean

(01:37:13):
in the West A man, Well, if he stays, you
putn't on what the Lakers do in regards to building
out that roster. They can add a couple more components,
it still knows to be a better duo in the
Western Conference and than Lebron and a d You know,

(01:37:34):
I think Kyle kuz mcgrows and he plays. I think
it's the perfect match. Is why the Lakers, you know,
want to maintainer for what le Braun and A D
bring to the paper, which you gotta running neat the
ball in his hand. He cuts, he runs the floor
extremely well. He defends, he can rebound, he can dock
down perimeter shots, you know, So you add another shooter,

(01:37:55):
you know, to that starting lineup and then coming off
the bench. I steel think with those two players, seeing that,
you know, Golden State took a step back because of
the injuries and Katie leaving. Utah has gotten better, Portland
has gotten better, but still you would think that the
Lakers that they rounded off wild still be the team
to be. How confident are you that k d will
be back to the level he was at before he
got hurt? Doug, do you know this man's a year older.

(01:38:19):
The Achilles injury is a tough tough thing to come back,
not just physically but mentally. Um. You know, keep in mind,
the longer you played this game, you've never ad you know,
you're never ad percent during the course of the season.
You only got some nagging injury. So somebody says, I'm
gonna be back. I'm like, no, you're not. You're a
hundred percent where you were born. Before you started playing
this game and started getting beat up at some point,

(01:38:41):
your body was never physically a hundred percent. So if
KD can be you know, of what he was playing,
then he's still gonna be great at what he does.
But the mental hurdle, the challenge of trusting it, I
think is the biggest issue. And you you know it, Doug,
you by playing and going through injuries or how tough

(01:39:01):
it is to come back, and that's at a young
gage let alone, as you've been in the league with
were in tearing your body. How that part plays you know,
I think huge mentally, uh on a player like that
itself and if you don't see the results right away,
how does that affect you? You know mentally? How do
you go out and play and prepare? That's gonna be

(01:39:21):
fascinating to see, right I do think, like, what do
you think you think in regards to this injury with
k D? Okay, So here's the downside. The negative is
this he's had you know, he broke his foot twice
essentially same year, right, so he's had foot, He's had
multiple calf things. There's something in terms of imbalanced there
that um and he will be in his mid thirties.

(01:39:45):
So I don't think it's crazy to wonder if you're
the Knicks and they may have said, hey, we're not
gonna get him anyway, but to wonder, like the Knicks
have had a lot of bad contract with injured players
and you don't know. But in terms of Katie, I
do think that he's not is body type isn't one
that he's gonna carry extra weight like DeMarcus Cousins. I
don't know if ever be back. But one of the

(01:40:05):
things is he puts on weight right, so then everything
starts breaking down. The second thing is while he's explosive, like,
it's not like he's like Dominique Wilkins, you know, or
Isaiah Thomas was so quick, Like he's explosive for a
seven footer. He can still you know, shoot over dudes.
I don't know if he's as affected uh by by

(01:40:27):
having to get back his explosiveness as other guys. So
I'm more confident that because of body type and style
of play and his size and skill that he'll be
close to the same level. But I'm cautiously possible, pessimistic
because I mean, Wes Matthews is a is A is
a minimum contract guy now, right, He's never been the same,

(01:40:49):
and he toured in the prime in his mid twenties, right,
I mean all and and and Katie's not. So I
don't know, man, I I'm pessimistic, but I am hopeful
because I do think his body type in style of
game could withstand losing a half step. Yeah, you know,
And that's a great point because of how he plays,

(01:41:09):
you know, his ability to cover space with one dribble,
to get a shot up um, to be able to
catch and shoot, to use as an athleticism when he
needs it, but it doesn't rely on it, uh, And
to understand the game itself and how to make the
game easy. I think those factors of what you're talking
about in regardssly if he maybe loses a little bit,

(01:41:31):
but yet and still the skill set and how he
plays allows allows him still to be effective for another
four or five six years. That and I think that's
a that's a huge point because imagine if it was
a bench carter early in his career right now, he
relied on his athleticism so much Now, as he got older,
he had neat issues. He started to rely and change

(01:41:51):
his game, you know what I mean. But that's because
he had and it took some time, but he still
wasn't as effective all Star level like that. But I
was just using that as an example of somebody that
was highly athletic that it probably would affect more than um.
Katie apparently is gonna have his jersey retired. But the
Golden State Warriors, I don't. I don't. I don't know

(01:42:14):
what that is. I really don't. I mean as to
take up there, I don't know, Man, I don't. I
didn't know what. I didn't ask you what do you
think about the d Rush trade over to to Go
and State? Um, I mean, everybody said it doesn't make
sense from the way they play, but I do think
for a year, like if they're gonna move him at

(01:42:35):
the end of the year, you're going forward next year,
that would make more sense. But like he's a ball
screen guy. He's a dominant ball which does allow us.
I mean, my the one fear that everyone talks about
in the league is like, man, Steph Curry is gonna
get worn out by a year of trying to carry
a team, and this allows them to give somebody else
the ball who has no problem taking plenty of shots,

(01:42:56):
but he's not really a war Like if you thought
k D held the ball a lot, you haven't seen
you know, you haven't seen uh D'Angel Russell play. So
I think it's an odd fit, but I think it's
more of an asset acquirement for like a bridge. Year
is the way the way it looks. What what do
you think? Well, first of all, I'm happy for de
Angelo just too everything that happened with the Lakers, not

(01:43:19):
keeping mind at Brooklyn, things kind of fell in place
when he matured, he worked on his game, but with
the injuries with Cares, the Bird, you know, and really
the squad itself, it allowed the Angelo to kind of
play the ball in his hands. So that itself gives
me hope that for one year they can figure it out,

(01:43:39):
But long term, I just don't. I mean, because the
way that goes State plays, especially when Draymond has the ball,
Clay has the ball perpetual movement, and it did slow
down at times with Katie, but not a lot. Katie
was great playing off the ball, you know, and understand
the dynamic of Golden State, saying, hey, listen, we need
another scorer short term until Clay gets back. We're opening

(01:44:04):
a new arena. We gotta sell something, we gotta pitch something.
We have to stay relevant somehow, and this is how
you do it. You know. It may not on the
surface look like the best decision, but from a short
term perspective, I think it'll It will give a little
bit of life to their fan base and to keep
going and stay kind of in the mix a little bit. Yeah,

(01:44:25):
they may it's going to be a struggle because Utah
has gotten better, a lot of Portland has gotten better.
Uh in the westerns. Yere great stuff, man, welcome back,
Thanks for joining us. Talk to you soon. We gotta
than all right. That's the one and only Jim Jackson.
We got sad news to share from Major League Baseball.
That part of what you'll hear from Dan Buyer. Dougie

(01:44:47):
Angels announced the twenty seven year old picture Tyler Skeggs
died today in Texas. Their game against the Rangers tonight
has been postponed now. Police in South Lake, Texas say
that they responded to a call at the team sell
l at two eighteen local time this afternoon. The call
was for an unconscious mail Skaggs was pronounced dead at

(01:45:07):
the scene. The report from the South Lake Police say
no foul play was suspected, but they will continue their investigation.
But again, the Rangers Angels game tonight has been postponed
following the death of Angels picture Tyler Skaggs, who just
pitched on Saturday night in the game against the Oakland A's.
In fact, Skaggs was the Angels draft pick about ten
years ago out of Santa Monica High School in southern California,

(01:45:31):
was dealt to the Diamondbacks and then back to the Angels.
Tyler Skeggs again dead at the age of twenty seven.
Some news in the NBA Clay Thompson did sign his
five year deal with one ninety million dollars to stay
with the Warriors. The Warriors apparently are going to retire
at number thirty five, worn by Kevin Durant over the
previous three seasons. Warriors co chair and CEO Joe Lacob

(01:45:52):
made the announcement that as long as he is with
the team, no player will wear number thirty five again.
Now now, in fairness, he did not say they would
retire it, right, Like we're all reacting like they're gonna
retire the number, but it's not actually what he said.
He's retiring it like Brett Farve retired for and then
and then maybe you'll come back, because yeah, Joe Wacob leaves,
then thirty five could be up for grabs. But again,

(01:46:14):
like I, I under we all take it to mean
they're going to retire the number. But he didn't say
we're going to retire his number. Well, he said nobody's
gonna wear it again. Do you understand the difference? Yeah,
he didn't say that up in the raft. He didn't
we're gonna put it up in the rafters. He just
said nobody's gonna wear it. Kind of weird. Yeah, yeah,

(01:46:35):
I could get down to semantics a little bit, but
it is. But semantics do kind of matter, right, I mean,
if you I'm parsing words, but if I'm gonna parse them,
they're gonna be words. The Uh, I don't know where
I was? Where was I anybody? That's that's right. Celtics
agreed to terms at a two year deal with Ennis Cantor.

(01:46:56):
Frank Kaminsky is gonna get a two year deal with
the Phoenix Suns Cowboys running back Zekiel Elliott to meet
with Commissioner Roger Goodell tomorrow. Winger Tammy Pinarin going from
the Blue Jackets to the Rangers. Blue Jackets also lost
center Matthew Shane. That was expected over the last twenty
four hours, but he officially sent his deal with the
Nashville Predators today. Who's the woes of hockey? I feel

(01:47:22):
like I feel like that's a big opening right Like again,
smaller but fervent fan base. Who's the looges of hockey? Uh? Those?
Does Ryan Music have an answer? Isn't it a Pierre
Lebrun is he? I mean, whenever I see hockey news,
it's from He's the hockey insider for TSN and the

(01:47:45):
Athletic Toronto. That's the guy Toronto. They have an athletic Toronto.
They do? Of course they do. Yeah, of course the
athletic is everywhere. I'm leaving blank for the athletics. They
actually are. Blanche U saw an article about they're gonna
launch the Athletic in London. M I think Merril, Wisconsin

(01:48:05):
is gonna get all athletic different They're right, like they
spell theater there differently. They spell, They just called sports.
We'll be back to the Dug Gottlieb Show on Ted Seconds,

(01:49:13):
You know there's not great options all around, right, I mean,
they're all good options, and I think it'll be fine
wherever he goes. But I'm not sure there's all great
options all around, Like Toronto is not really where you
want to be. They'll be the ridiculous unrealistic expectations of
winning again, right, Like I I understand that everybody's sitting here, go, well,

(01:49:33):
they just won, Like, yes, they won. It took a
crazy carum shot. Think of the things that went in
their fact, in their favor. Boston kind of imploded. That
helped him out. Indie lost their best player, Victor Oladipo.
That didn't that helped them out, right, I mean Indie
used competitive and lost their best player. I think Indie's
gonna get better. We'll see when he ro win. Victor

(01:49:55):
Oladipo returns the Philadelphia seventy. They were thrown together kind
of late, and it took a ridiculous like front rim twice,
back room twice in in order to beat them in
seven games at home, they had to acquire Marcusol. Like, look,
there's a reason Marcusol opted into his contract because he

(01:50:15):
would not make that out on the open market anymore.
It's not a good contract. Marcusol is thirty four years
old making over twenty million dollars at seven ft one.
So like the idea of Toronto, I was like, ah,
you did you stay? You'll just win another one? Like yeah,

(01:50:39):
not really kind of the way. It's definitely gonna work
to make twenty five Marcusol makes twenty five million dollars. Fine,
just not that easy. But maybe they do because Kawhi
Leonards really really good and they're stable and they bring
it back. But hey, didn't Kyle Lowry went through times
in the playoffs where he was terrible, wasn't he He's

(01:51:02):
coming back. He's not getting any younger either. Oh, they
just rubb robbing back and I want another champion, Jobby,
I'll go. They're Toronto. That's a little doing the Eastern
ra rob rob Rah. I don't know, man, I don't
think it's really all that easy. I just don't. They're
losing Danny Green, who wasn't great. They will get o
g and and Obe back, who's only twenty one years old.

(01:51:25):
He should continue to improve. Obviously, Pascal Sia comes back.
You know, people point out Fred VanVleet, like Fred VanVleet
was bad at the start of the playoffs until he
had another kid. Then all of a sudden he couldn't
miss a shot. So and by the way, it's in Canada,

(01:51:47):
not where you wanted to be. You go to the
Clippers and you thought there'd be another guy with you.
It's kind of your own team, which is kind of cool,
kind of not cool. And it's also the Clippers. Did
I mentioned the Clippers, Like, we can make fun of
Brooklyn not having great fan support at times and not
being a big but the Clippers have never been passed
the second round of the playoffs. And then there's the Lakers,

(01:52:11):
where I just don't know. I mean, I think it
all works because they just they have so many good players,
but there's a lot of guys that need the basketball.
M I'm not sure there's all great options. Let's get
to the press, the press. Don't Dan Byer what he got?

(01:52:35):
My fan Doug again Tyler Skeggs. The Angels picture passed
away earlier today in Texas. If you missed the news,
which broke about an hour ago. The South Lake Police
Department in Texas say they got a call at around
two eighteen local time for an unresponsive male in a
hotel room at the Angels Hotel. They arrived on scene
and Skegs was pronounced dead at the scene. No fall

(01:52:59):
place suspected to The investigation is ongoing, but the Angels
Rangers game postponed tonight following in the death of Tyler Skeggs.
That's the latest. So, I mean we we well assume
we just died to sleep at twenty eight years old.
It's just awful. And so the uh, the Rangers actually
just held a press conference a few minutes ago with

(01:53:23):
GM John Daniels and just speaking, but nothing yet from
the Angels is obviously they're dealing with this news. Is
we talked about earlier. The Angels put up their lineup
on Twitter for tonight's game just a couple of hours ago,
so I he was was to pitch tonight, So when
he was supposed to be, the park's probably somebody's like,
where's Tyler again? They got to go in the room.

(01:53:44):
I mean, man, that's awful, very very sad. Onto the
NBA news, the Heat completed their trade with the seventy
six is to acquire Jimmy Butler Now a four teen
deal that includes the Trollblazers and Clippers more Heartless Now

Jimmy Butler has wanted to be the man. You get
your wish. You're in Miami with pat Riley. Does anybody
think they're gonna win a championship there? Which I like, Look,
you don't have to win a championship in order to

(01:54:26):
make a lot of money and play basketball and have
a lot of fun and in respect, it's just it's
a it's a very interesting career path. So it was
the most Jimmy Butler move ever. We said yesterday when
the news came down, go by himself, and heck, the
only person that really liked when he was in Chicago
was Dwayne Wade. So it's kind of perfect that he
can grab the torch and move on. A couple of

(01:55:34):
told me, the grass is quite good in California. Johnny
Djokovic a winner today at straight sets. Lady second seed
Naomi O soccer was upset and fifteen year old Coco
Golf upset thirty nine year old Venus Williams in the
first round. He's down in the first round. Yes, Venus
is done. But Venus is thirty nine. Who knew? It's amazing.

(01:55:55):
He doesn't look a day over thirty seven. The The
comment was that golf always looked up to Venus Williams,
and it's like she was twenty four when you were born,
you know, so you you looked up to the ladder
Venus in her career bag get out there and pressed
that was the press. He has been doing it for
a long, long long time. I agree with you. I
