(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America,
Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, and we are on
the road live. You see Irvine, the host of the
NFC champion l A Rams training camp, as they're going
(00:44):
through a walk through now preparing for practice tonight. We
will talk with their head coach, Sean McVeigh, who, uh,
simply by proxy because I've interviewed him several times, I
believe I will be a head coaching candidate in the
very near future. Plus, let's need several of the Rams
will stop by as they try and win one more game.
(01:06):
They came one drive short, one game short of being
Super Bowl champions. But considering where they started, just you know,
we were here two years ago where we thought there
might be the chance of something special to now being
the defending NFC champions. I mean it's kid's crazy. How
Jeff Fisher was run out of l a halfway through
(01:26):
his first season, their first season in Los Angeles. The
juxtaposition of those expectations with the expectations now, which is
not just super Bowl or bust, but when the Super
bowler bust is crazy when you're considering the time spin
we're talking, we're talking two short years. So we're watching
Jared Goff, We're watching Todd Gurley, and Todd Gurley is
(01:48):
probably the most interesting figure right because what happens, what
happens in professional sports is a lot like what happens
with your kid, with your son, with your daughter. I mean,
Johnny gets too. I asked my son all the time,
says dad, why do I Why do I go to
sleep so early? All of my friends, all of my friends,
(02:11):
you know, they get to stay up till ten o'clock.
And what I said was, ho, hold on, hold on.
First of all, you go to bed at nine thirty,
which really means a forty five, and then all of
a sudden you get a chance, you get a chance
two to read a book, to lay down. By time
you fall asleep, it's not o'clock anyway, And just because
(02:32):
other people's parents aren't as into uh. The idea of
you getting a good nine ten eleven hours of sleep
does not affect you. We can't deal with the world
of Johnny's and or of Jenny's. We can only deal
with with your life with your body. And that's where
(02:54):
we are with Dak Prescott a right. Dak Prescott wants
what Todd Gurley has. Odd Gurly got a contract a
year before they needed to re up him. It was
this time last year that Todd Gurley was given the
biggest uh, the biggest contract a running back had ever
been given. And what happened with Todd Gurley an outstanding
(03:16):
starts the season and then an injury plague second part
of the season, and he barely contributed to their Super
Bowl game. And maybe the outcome of the Super Bowl
is different if he's healthier, but he wasn't, and we
don't know if he'll ever be healthy again. And in
spite of that, the Rams were fine the playoffs, even
though they really minimized, really minimized his usage. And so
(03:42):
I look at it and, um, if I'm the Dallas Cowboys,
and granted he does not have the injury history doc
excuse me. Zeke Elliott does not have the injury history
of somebody like Todd Gurley who towards a c L
in college. But he's probably more dynamic, more involved, not
(04:05):
just in the past game as a pass catcher, but
as a blocker. Like I have no problem if you
tell me that, uh Zeke Elliott's the best or one
of the two or three best running backs in the game,
I have no problem with that, none. Zero zip Zill's
not a That's exactly what Todd Gurley was viewed as
(04:26):
last year this time and they gave him the big contract.
And if you asked Lessnie, I'll ask less need in
alas polite away as possible, Like if you could go
back and get a do over, Remember you have do
overs when you're a kid and you're playing whether there's
flag football, touch football, or you're playing in between the
lines and baseball. You could if they could have a
do over with the Rams, maybe they extend him or
(04:48):
maybe they don't extend them, but they definitely don't give
him the biggest contract a year before. They had to
do so. Now the reason they did it is the
reason contracts get done early in the NFL is to
to kind of kick that canned down the street so
that they could sign in Dominican Sue, bring in some
of those players that were on the last year one
year of a contract, and they made a run and
it worked out and they went to the super Bowl
(05:09):
and they had a shot to win the Super Bowl.
But if you're the Dallas Cowboys, you're sitting there going like, look,
I get that Johnny got to stay up at ten o'clock,
but you're not Johnny, and eventually we will make you,
uh the one of the highest paid running backs in
the NFL. But the Cowboys are under no pressure at all.
(05:31):
Only this this emotional pressure or the pressure of the media,
or the pressure of social media, or the pressure of
Jerry Jones, who has always said he wanted to take
care of his guys. The new regime of the Cowboys
knows that the whole thing works together when they have Zeke,
but also when they have a line and when they
have a Marie Cooper, and that helps Dak Prescott and
(05:52):
so the idea that he wants what Todd Gurley has
is very normal, right, Dak Prescott wants her Roger's money.
But what was it in Austin Powers I want to
solid gold toilet. But it's not just not in the CODs, babe.
The running back market diminishes his players get older. We've
seen Todd Gurley's contract be one that the Rams would
(06:17):
love to probably take back. All right, And at some point,
as a parent you have to say, I get it.
They stay up till ten, but maybe they get up
at eight and you get up at six every morning.
That's my kids problem is it doesn't matter what time
he goes to bed. He goes been seven weeks up
(06:38):
six because it's been a ten weeks six doesn't matter.
You're not them. That situation isn't the same. Hell, Melvin
Gordon's the Just so you know, we're We're located here
in Irvine, California. If if you could draw a straight
line two miles away, I believe would be maybe three
would be where the Chargers train. And they don't have
(07:01):
Melvin Gordon, and he wants Todd Gurley money, and he
wants Lavy on Bell money. But you know what, it's
a completely different scenario. Zeke is actually more more prominent.
You know, they have fewer surrounding pieces and he's not.
(07:23):
He's more important for their overall offense and really how
the team is built than Melvin Gordon is. But I
wouldn't pay either of them. But for Zeke Elliott to
sit here and go like, I'm not gonna practice Dallas Cowboys.
If you're the Dallas Cowboys, you sit there and go, okay, fine,
we don't believe we're as good without you, but we
(07:45):
also can't be as good with you if we move
heaven and earth and overpay you because we still have
to pay Dak we still have to pay Amark Cooper,
we still have to pay jeal And Smith, We have
to pay some of these other young talented players in
the future. And unless you're willing to take less over
a long term, then what top dollar is. We can't
(08:05):
do business right now. The hardest part about being a
bit a parent is telling a kid no. But sometimes
no is for the betterment of the entire family, and
sometimes no is for the betterment of a football team,
the Dallas Cowboys. And we'll be up at Cowboys camp
in a week and a half, the Dallas Cowboys. The
answer is no. The answer is no. All right, we
(08:28):
have a ton to get to hear from l A.
Rams camp. Obviously, Thankfully they've turned down the music so
that now I can hear myself. Think we were we were,
we were getting gigu with it for a minute. We
were shaking our things. The Dug Gotlip Show is brought
to you by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything
you want to cover, almost anything when it's game time,
(08:48):
having to experienced player help you stay there the game.
Put their experience in the plant farmers dot com. We
are Farmers by the way. Here's Terry Bradshaw on the
show Friday sharing his thoughts on players holding out for
New Country right now. I have no sympathy for them.
They're going to get their money. You know what happens
is these young rookies, especially Melbourne and Ezekiel Elliott, they've
(09:09):
got what the five year rookie contract and they're wanting
to get it done now and holding out is their
way to force management hands. And maybe it will, maybe
it won't. Maybe Jerry Jones will say no, and maybe
he'll say yes. It's so commonplace now, I'm so used
to it. Do I agree with it? No? Absolutely not.
(09:30):
Play play and honor your contract and you'll get your money.
He didn't worry about getting hurt the first three years.
Why you worry about get hurt now? Yeah. The the
interesting thing about it is the biggest critique you will
hear of NFL contracts are they're not guaranteed. We are
(09:51):
talking about rookie deals to Melvin Gordon and a rookie
deal to Zuki Elliott. How many people out there know
that those rookie contracts are fully guaranteed. Now, they may
not have the overall value of what their next contract will,
but the criticism of them is so completely not just unfair,
but basically uneducated by the common fan. No one saying
(10:14):
that Zeke isn't great, or that Melvin Gordon isn't important,
or that Todd Gurley wasn't dynamic when healthy for the Rams.
No one's saying that. But when you have a pool
of money and you can only spend that pool of
money if you're wanting more before it's your time to
get more, something else ends up coming up short, we're
(10:37):
expecting to have Sean McVeigh join us upcoming next by
interviewing him for a third consecutive year. I do believe
I'll be up for many a coaching job in the
National Football League. How does he take it. What's it
like for people to simply relate, you know, be the
the second or third degree away from a coach that
(10:58):
gets a job at him getting some sort of credit
for that coach getting the job. I'll ask him. The
defending NFC champion l A. Rams Camp is our home.
This is a Doug Gotlip Show. Be sure to catch
live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show weekdays at
noon eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app. Doug Gotlip Show rolls on
(11:20):
here live from defending NFC champion L. A. Rams Training
camp here on Fox Sports Radio. I mean, just think
about that. I just I mean, look, they were they weren't.
They weren't like a laughing stot. They weren't like you know,
Cleveland Browns of the last two years previous to this
(11:41):
past season. But the Rams were a much discussed, consistently
underachieving football team and a lot of it was man
their interior line, offensive defensive is good. They drafted Todd
Gurley and then it was Jared Goffs. A bust to
Sean McVeigh takes over. And I did think some of
the first year, some of it was helped up by schedule,
(12:03):
but it felt like virtually overnight they became a dynamic team.
Then they lose their first playoff game at home two
years ago to the Atlanta Falcons, who were the defending
an f C champions at the time, and then last
year they get into the playoffs. They played, without any question,
the game of the year, right like if every football
(12:25):
game could be as good as the Monday nighter against
Kansas City in the college team that was supposed to
be in Mexico City, if you remember, they play the
game of the year, and then of course they win
on the road. Whatever you think about the blown pass
interference call which would have been against the Rams, the
fact is that the Saints that was third down and
(12:49):
some of the things that they did caused the Saints
to have to make a play and make a read
on third down. It wasn't particularly good throw, but whatever.
They also got us. They had a couple of big
boy drives in that game by golf they gotta stop.
In overtime, they kicked the field goal to winning overtime.
They won on the road in New Orleans from from
(13:09):
from one of the most laughed at offensive schemes under
Jeff Fisher two and a half years ago too, losing
at a home in their first playoff gaming years at
the l A Coliseum to winning on the road in
New Orleans, and like, look, did they lose to the Patriots. Yes,
(13:30):
did their offense get shut down with Patriots. But that
was a hell of a football get a hell of
a football game. It might have been tough on the
eyes to the American sports fan who is used to
the Kanci Chiefs against the l A. Rams type of game.
The fact is the hell of foot poking. They come
within a whisker of winning a Super Bowl and now
(13:50):
one of the favorites to get back to the super Bowl.
That's an amazing transformation, truly amazing. But they went all
in and last season and now there are some new
parts and they'll have to work through new offensive line,
new defensive line, new defensive backfield. But they do have
Sean McVeagh who's as respected a young coach as we've
(14:12):
ever seen in sports. And and the way in which
you know a guy is being respected is it seemed
like every head coach that was hired had some sort
of degree connection one degree to degree three degree connection
to Shaan McVeigh and if everyone wants a piece of
(14:32):
what you have, that only says the lead. The league
is telling you they like what he does and want
to copy, want to mimic what he does. All right,
Jean McVeigh is currently watching his offense. They are just
in helmets and jerseys and shorts or sweatpants. It looks
(14:54):
like they're running through a little two minute drill as
this is a walk through. Remember new NFL rules going
back to the start of this c b A, they
can't have two minute drill, and so they're walking through
a couple of things before he'll come over and join us.
We're told Robert Woods will join us as well. A
couple of the things I wanted to get to. Did
(15:16):
you guys see a Rod's birthday cake? How many guys
saw that? We're watching Sunday Sunday Baseball? Was um was
red Sox Yankees? A little bit of betting advice for you. Okay, one,
you know the Bengals don't have a j Green won't
happen probably a week one of the season. They also
have no offensive line. They resigned Andre Smith, who goodn't
(15:36):
block a dead man last year with the Arizona Cardinals.
Now he's back with since anti Bengals, where he once
upon a time was a first round traff pick that
held out on hard knocks. You remember Andre Smith. So
they have all kinds of offensive line issues. They don't
have a j Green and Andy Dalton coming back off
of injury. Their first game of the season is a
roadie in Seattle, traditionally one of the more difficult places
(15:57):
to play, unless, of course, you're the rams Um. A
little betting advice one either take the over in all
Red Sox Yankee game games, especially in Fenway. Yankee starting
pitching has been abysmal in the month and two. I
know it's a huge number, it's nine. I would still
take the Seattle Seahawks minus nine as of now against
(16:22):
the sincetety Bengals because I have no idea how they
blocked the Seahawks and the twelfth man on the road.
They got like a month to figure it out. But
did you Alex Rodriguez's birthday was last night, and Alex
has had the most remarkable pr turnaround in the history
of media, like probably probably more so than Marv Albert. Right,
(16:47):
if you remember the Marv Albert story from it's like
fift twenty years ago to marve our back calling NBA games.
That that's a pretty I don't know if you don't
think he would survive it now, but he survived. I
Alex Rodriguez calls games on Fox and on ESPN. That's
no one has ever done that. The color voice of
(17:08):
Sunday Night Baseball and studio for the All Star Game,
studio for the World Series. So j Lo comes in,
sneaks in with a Rod's two daughters and has a
birthday cake to surprise him. The birthday cake only says
happy Birthday. It does not say happy Birthday Alex. And
(17:30):
Alex Rodriguez did not even take a bite out of
the cake. They cut one little piece out and then
apparently they left it like in the media room for
the media vultures, and they are vultures to devour. Nothing
says I love you like a birthday cake without a
name on it, Right, nothing says I love you with that.
So I guess my question is that it had to
(17:51):
be like a p a, Right you said a p a, Like, Hey,
it's Alex's birthday, somebody go get him a cake. It
just says happy birthday and sees it's in Boston. Right,
it was probably a stopping shop. So I'm gonna go
in a stopping chop and get him a birthday cake.
I don't care what kind of birthday cake. He ain't
eating it anyway, Just go get him a birthday cake.
(18:12):
They didn't get him any candles. How do you not
get a guy one candle? This is a This is
not the failure of Alex of Alex Rodriguez. It's not
the failure Jennifer Lopez. It's not the failure of of
anybody who's the producer director. No, no, no, this is
a p as fault. Right, p A is um. I
(18:38):
wouldn't be an associate producer. That's an AP. It's a
production assistant. There's a production assistant who all they wanna
do is having to travel around with Sunday Night baseball.
I'm gonna do the right thing. Let me get a
job at ESPN or get a job at a rod Ink, Right,
That's all I'm gonna do. Like, all right, you got
one job. Today is Alex rodriguez Is day. And they
(19:00):
might have fought not found out until like the second inning. Alright,
So I need you to run down the stopping shop.
Needs you get a birthday cake? And so they did
technically what they were asked to do. It's said happy
birthday and it was written on top of a cake.
So by letter of the law, this p A. We
need a name, we need an address, we need the
(19:21):
school that they probably attend. They probably go to a school.
It probably might be just weekend, might go to Boston
you you know, might go to Emerson, might go to
Boston college. Might be you mass you masked bowl, who knows.
Definitely No, this is not a habit move. So the
p A comes back like one doesn't say anything? And
(19:46):
two where's the candle? Like the candle is the money?
Is the money deal? Right? That's this is this is
what this is a kid too. Hey it's Valentine's Day.
I gotta get my Life of card. Would you just
get her card and not write anything in it, not
even sign it, and then go like, hey, I got
(20:06):
your card? Like that doesn't work. Correct? When you write
a thank you note, do you just write that just
opens up and says thank you and don't sign it.
I want to know who this is. This is a
production assistant and this is the beginning of a failed career.
Unless somebody says you screwed up here, buddy, you had
one job and the letter of the law you did
(20:28):
its spirit of the law. You came up short. This
is not how we roll. Be sure to catch live
editions of the Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays in noon
eastern three pm Pacific. Doug Got Leap Show rolls on
here live at NFC Champion l A Rams Training Camp,
and Sean McVeigh joins us here on Fox Sports Radio.
(20:49):
And I kind of tried to set the give people perspective.
Right two years ago we sat here and you were
the youngest head coach in the National Football League, and
and trying to say what what it could look like
now you basically one drive short, one game short from
having completed the task. What anyone's goal is starting in
(21:11):
professional sports, let alone in the National Football League. What's
this last two year has been like for you? It's
been great, you know, I think, really, Doug, it's it's
continue to reiterate that it's all about the people that
are around you. And you know, we've got great players
and great coaches, and and really I think you know,
you're just learning every day. I mean the perspective that
you have now two years later, I think you have
a greater appreciation for how humbling this role can be.
But I think also, uh, you know, just having a
(21:34):
feel for the normal work week as far as the rhythm,
you know, our third training camp, I think there's a
little bit more comfort in that. But each year presents
new challenges. We got a new team and it's been
a good couple of days to start off. It is
a new team and I want to get to that
as well as your your third training camp. But this
offseason was filled with coaching hires, and many of them
it felt like almost all of them had some sort
(21:55):
of connection to you with I mean, like, you know,
Cliff Kingsbury, you guys knew each other, but it's not
like he worked for you. Well, what's that like to
sit outside of it and watch so many people connect
the dots to you? I mean, in many ways, it's
out of respect for what you and your staff have
been able to do. But what was that like for you? Yeah,
I think that's you just said it, Dug. It was
out of respect for what the Rams have done and
(22:17):
unfortunately we've been able to have some success over the
last couple of years. But it's definitely been a collaborative effort.
Couldn't be happier for for Matt and Zach. And then
you know, Cliffs been doing his thing on his own,
you know, and we we just happen to know each other.
But uh, Zach and Matter are both great coaches that
I was fortunate enough to work with here that we
have both been instrumental pieces to what we've been able
to accomplish. But I'm excited for them, and you know,
(22:39):
it's humbling and flattering, but it is a result of
the you know, the the respect that they have for
the Rams and some of the success we've been able
to have. You've been doing this for a long time,
not just your own team, but other people's teams. But
seeing as it is your shop year three, how are
you evolving? What are you doing differently than you've done
or or tweaking than you've done in the past. I
think it always starts with your players first, So let's
(23:00):
figure out, let's continue to identify and understand what our
personnel does best, and then we fit our systems offensively
and defensively to their skill sets. So adding some new
pieces on defense that will enable us to do a
little bit more and some things that are specifically geared towards,
you know, putting Aaron in good spots, putting Clay Matthews
and Wettle. You know, you still can build around Fowler
and Michael Brocker's You got Corey Littleton inside a lot
(23:21):
of really good dbs uh with with our two corners
and with John Johnson and and the kel Roby and
those guys. So so we feel really good about where
we're at. We know we got a long way to go.
And then offensively, it's making sure you study some of
the things that teams were able to have success with
against you, and how can you evolve, how can you
make sure that you have some answers because there's too
many good coaches and players in this league and um
(23:43):
every year presents new challenges and that's what we're excited about.
It is fascinating because the first year you you you
kind of took the league by storm with so much
of your tempo. And then last year you didn't have
to do that. You didn't have to you didn't have
to speed things out, you didn't have to give your
quarterback so much information before the heads and went off.
So I think a lot of people around the league
are trying to figure out what's he gonna do in
(24:04):
your three year one was different from your tier. Your
three must be must be a continued evolution. You mentioned
having Eric Weddle on the back end of things, and
here's the guy who's close to walking away. But what
everyone says is, man, I mean, he he's a savant
back there in his ability to get everybody lined up.
On the other hand, not a spring chicken. So how
do you manage that the fact that he's got to
(24:25):
have the reps in knowing your defense and what you
guys want to do. On the other hand, you want
to manage his legs and manage his body because you
need him for seven team weeks and then postseason, not
for the preseason. Yeah, that's the goal. Hopefully we get
a chance to compete after that, Doug. But I think
the biggest thing there that I've really learned one of
the things being a head coaches, you know how the
sports science plays into how we really want to train
(24:45):
and practice, and you know it's not exclusive to veteran players.
You know, Eric still moving around really well, and he's
got a lot of explosiveness and juice left in those legs.
But I think whether it's Eric Andrew Whitworth or even
some of our players, you know, the Brandon Cooks, Robert Woods,
Todd Gurley's, we want to make sure there as fresh
as possible. So there's a big emphasis on the above
the neck, the walkthroughs where it's not as a physical tolling,
(25:06):
but it is above the neck information that they can process.
And really you know, the you know, the post snap
things that occur, but so much of what occurs in
this game is the pre snap and then just the
first few steps as far as our techniques are fundamentals
are communication that's entailed, and those are the things that
we place a premium on. And then when we do go,
we go full speed. But in in you know, a
little bit fewer reps than typically what I had been
(25:28):
accustomed to before I had been here. What are reasonable
expectations for us as fans to have of Todd Gurley?
You're able as he battled through some stuff late in
the season add c J. And he was he was
a godsend. But there there's some there's some school of
thought that you'll never get the Gurulee that we had,
you know, before the end of last year. What what
what's what are reasonable expectations for Todd Gurley on a
(25:50):
football field with you? Yeah, our expectation is Todd to be,
you know, the same player that he's been and continue
to improve like he's done over the last couple of years. Um.
You know, whether it's Todd or any player, we're always
going to monitor that health. And you know, this is
a very physical game, but we're he's feeling good, We're
excited about it, and everything's really geared towards that Carolina game. Okay,
so you guys are only here a short period of time.
(26:10):
We are. Then you go to Nappa. Then you go
to Hawaii, which would sound great. A lot of it
would be good if we weren't actually working. But this
is work man. We're going up to Napa for a
business trip. You also, you go up to Napa see
you know, you see see Grewtin. That's your your first
boss and um, I think that obviously. And then you
go out and you see the Cowboys and of course
you know Zeke once what Todd Gurley has once contexts
(26:33):
you may not see him. How how does that change?
How you manage things in that to the fan or
maybe to the ownership group, like they can go hang
out in a couple of great locations see three different
football teams. But to you, this is there's a lot
of travel, a lot of other stuff and you can't
just grind and fix things and evaluate like you'd want. Yeah,
and you know the biggest thing is is you know,
(26:54):
specifically going up to Napa Dug you know, in a
lot of ways, I think you can expect us to
approach the preseason. Similar with the players that have played
a lot of snaps that we know that are proven
players in this league. Um, you know, unless we feel necessary,
they're probably not going to participate in the preseason. So
that's why there's a premium on some of these practices
where we're gonna get a chance to compete against the
Raiders twice or the Chargers twice while we're out here,
(27:17):
and then the Raiders twice when we go up to
NAPA and uh, if we feel like we've gotten the
work necessary, then that can really almost serve as some
of the preseason work and a little bit more of
a controlled setting when we go out to Dallas. You know,
that'll be a great chance in our second preseason game
for some of her younger players to get a chance
to play against you know, uh, division winner, a playoff team,
and a team we saw last year. So a lot
(27:38):
of great opportunities. But you're right, man, it is a
business trip and uh those are fun places to go
in the off season. But we're in season mode now.
You know how it works. Uh, In this league, Jared
Goff goes from bust too incredible to some people being
a little bit out on what his ceiling is. They're
called big boy drives. He had in the game that
win against the Saints that got you to the super Bowl. Question,
(27:58):
so he he showed he has the lower intestinal fortitude
to to to do the job if you will, what
what are you what are you expecting the next step
to be? What does he need to do to take
that next step to be among the league's elites for
this franchise to continue to count on him more and more. Yeah,
I think just continue to improve and do what he's
done over the last couple of years. The experience that
(28:19):
he's gaining in terms of just the rollo DECKX of
reps that he can accumulate from seeing different defensive structures
and then how he can kind of pocket that in
his memory bank and learn from it. I thought he
did an outstanding job from year one to year two,
and then I sense an even more confident UH player
that knows exactly what's going on. He's got a great
ownership of what we're trying to do, Doug and Uh.
In terms of just physically, you know, he's growing up.
(28:40):
He looks stronger, UH, he's twitchier up top, He's able
to make all the throws. I mean, you see why
he's the number one overall pick. But I think anybody
that's really watching the film and knows what's going on
in this league knows he's the real deal, and we
feel really good about him being our quarterback. Heavy is
the head that where's the crown that believes that Shakespearean quote.
Right now, you guys are NFC champions right from from
(29:00):
having a lot of talent and then last year, you
know less in the group. You guys went for it
and got some guys on one year deals and it worked,
whether or not worked in the Super Bowl or not.
That doesn't You got to the super Bowl, you won
the NFC. How much different do you think and difficult.
Do you think the road will be because you won
the NFC because you actually got to the big game.
I think every year is and you know, I mean
(29:22):
everybody talks about a tough schedule. Every year is a
tough schedule. In my opinion, there's thirty one other teams
that feel really good right now, Doug, And for us,
it's just about producing in the president and our players
know that. You know, we have high expectations. We don't
shy away from that. But the only way you even
give yourself a chance to achieve those kind of goals
are by winning one day at a time and then
you know, putting ourselves in a position to hopefully start
(29:42):
one and o against the Panthers, and you know, the confidence,
the swagger our players know that's earned every single day.
We feel really good about our players knowing that. You know,
it's it's a one day at a time mindset and mentality.
But uh, there's a lot of belief and confidence. But
but it's something that you've got to earn every day. Well,
you have earned the respect of the league and then
of the fans it follow the league. Thanks much for
spending some time with this year. I appreciate it's it's
(30:03):
a yearly routine, now, yeah, it really really Sean McVeigh,

thanks to Sean McVeigh, head coach of the defending NFC
champion L A. Ram, spending some time with us. Robert
Woods expected to stop by here sometime at the top
of the hour. We'll ask him about how he had
(30:48):
an incredible season last year, but it was it was
helped him anyways by Cooper Cup getting hurt, right, Cooper
Cup goes down. Cooper Cup in any ways, the the
favorite target of a Jared Goff, and of course would
stepped into that role and did so um a plum,
I mean, did a tremendous job. But now Cooper back
and made some big plays at practice yesterday. So we'll
(31:09):
see about the transformation of both as they work another
year together. Robert Woods Ellie Rams will join us top
of the hour every day at this time we like
to get you caught up on a myriad of different
stories and topics. We do so by playing a game.
This is game time. Side on the Doug gott Leaves show,
(31:35):
Isaac Lowan Cram what's the game to day, my friend,
Let's find out what the deal is, Doug. Big deal,
little deal, no deal, that's a big deal. Cincinnati Bengals
receiver A J. Green out six weeks after tearing ligaments
in his left angle. But the story is where the
circumstances led him to that happening. The Bengals were holding
(31:56):
practice not in Cincinnati, but at a place called Welcome
Stadium in Dayton, Ohio, was part of the NFL's anniversary celebration. Now,
the Bengals cleared the field to be used, but the
conditions of the field were widely considered to be subpart.
Case in point, Bengals receiver Tyler Boyd saying the turf
(32:17):
was terrible. I couldn't run any routes out there. I'm
falling all over the ground. It was bad. It was
rocks pebbles out there. It was somewhere we shouldn't have
been turf Gate. Big deal, little deal or no deal. Um,
I actually think it's a big deal. I do. UM.
I brought this up so with the Rams. Practice is
(32:40):
here at you cr Vine. I grew up going to
summer camp here, basketball camp at six years old. My
son goes to basketball camp here. But the fields outside
Crawford Hall, between Crawford Hall and the Brand Center, Crawford
Hall is the old Jim, the Brand Centers the new
not new Issuy. It's thirty years old now, but this
is where they play collegiate soccer. It's where they have
their intermural soccer. And not only is the turf year great,
(33:01):
but it's gotten better every year. Obviously to those of
us who live in southern California. We had a historic
amount of rains this year in the spring, so I'm
sure that's helped. But you know, I've talked with the
Charge when we've gone to their camper. I've talked to
the I've talked to the Cowboys and we've gone there
and they've all said, like, look, it may sound, it
may sound like a little thing to a fan, but
(33:24):
the the Mexico City deal last year was a real deal.
Like with the turf is not playable. And if you
played basketball, have you ever playing a court the slippery
like you? You can't you can't play, you can't function.
You run a higher risk of injury. So I don't
know if that whether it's legit pebbles right, it was
a it's a turf field that's supposed to have those
little rubber balls or whatever. And I'm willing to believe
(33:47):
that a J. Green rolled his ankle. He going up
for a competitive play, could rolled his ankle against anybody.
But this is kind of classic Bengals. I don't think
it's them going cheap. I think it's take an unneeded risk.
Everyone practices somewhere off site. You gottam, you have to
make sure that you have the best possible footing because
(34:10):
you know, one slip, one roll of an ankle, and
that costs you a game. And we mentioned the fact
that the Bengals go on the road to play the
Seattle Seahawks with a putrid offensive line. Now they don't
have a J. Green. That's not the way you want
to start a coaching career. Carolina Panther safety Eric Read
tells the Charlotte Observer that he will continue to kneel
during the playing of the national anthem. He said, if
(34:31):
a day comes that I feel like we've addressed those
issues and our people aren't being discriminated against or being
killed over traffic violations, then I'll decide it's time to
stop protesting. I haven't seen that happen. We've got to
keep fighting. Big deal, little deal or no deal. Um,
it does feel like a little deal. It does feel
(34:54):
like a little deal. Um, And you know it, it
was a big deal at the time. With Colin Kaepernick,
it feels like a little like. Look. I could counter
to him that there have been there have been traffic
stops where police officers have been killed when they when
they walk up unsuspecting, um to a to someone who
was speeding. You know, I could counter to them a
(35:16):
lot of different things. But if he's simply kneeling for
the for the betterment, for the treatment of all Americans,
for police officers, we think are on a on a
power trip. Like the Panthers knew what they were getting
when they signed him. And as long as he performs
on a football field, it doesn't doesn't bother me, and
it never bothered me. Um, Now does he run the
(35:36):
risk of being fined. Sure, because the NFL LA you know,
had laid down the possibility of being fined for it.
But it doesn't bother me. I don't think you should
ever do it on nine eleven. I don't know if
they play on nine eleven. There's a there's a different
importance on the Star Spangled ban or a different importance
by my opinion, on the flag itself on nine eleven.
(35:57):
Outside of that, I do think it's disrespectful for the
towards towards the flag, but I think it's intentionally disrespectful.
He means to bring disrespect because he means to bring
attention to a problem. I don't agree with it. I
wouldn't do it. Does it bother me? No? And I
think that the biggest issue that this movement has is
that it doesn't have a leader or a vocal one.
(36:19):
Colin Kaepernick started this movement, led this movement, and then
though he's done some good works, some very good works
off the football field, he hasn't been front and center,
even though he could be. He could he could be
an our network on radio, TV whenever he wants, ESPN,
whenever he wants, NBC, CBS, whenever he wants, he has
chosen not to do so, and so a leaderless movement
(36:40):
really isn't a movement at all. Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jalen
Ramsey telling the Florida Times Union that he's comfortable being
an entertainer as well as a player, saying, I'm serious
about football, of course, but at the same time, I'm
gonna have fun. I'm gonna be an entertainer as well
as a football player. Is the game I love. I
(37:01):
want to bring as much attention to it as I can.
Jalen Ramsey two shows nightly at the Neptune Beach Hilton.
Is his entertainment approach, A big deal, a little deal,
or no deal. Um. My thing with Jalen Ramsey is like, look,
he's super talented, but he's got it. He can't quit
(37:22):
on his team when things go bad, can't be a
front runner, and last year he quitted his team at times.
So I don't care about this off the field stuff.
I don't care about the entertainment stuff. He needs to
play football. He needs to stop talking about other things
other than if you. This is a lot like we
talked about with other sports, where if you lose your base,
you know, forget about taking the NHL to Atlanta or
(37:44):
to Phoenix. If you lose your base in Canada in
the northeast, now of a sudden, you've got problems. When
you're a football player. You want to entertain, that's great.
You gotta be a great football player at the same time.
And that's my biggest issue is game time on the
Duck gott Leaps. All Doug got Leap Show rolls on
here on Fox Sports Radio or live at RAMS Camp.
(38:05):
Robert Woods is going to join us and we'll we'll
ask him about this camp as opposed to a previous
RAMS camp. What what what it's like to to now
walk around as ann SC champion? How do you how
do you handle that offseason when you got so close,
you got so incredibly close to winning a Super Bowl,
only to now have you know, months off to think
(38:28):
about it and to try and refocus. So many other
Super Bowl losers of the past have fallen off the
next year. How do the Rams keep that from happening?
We'll find out next live from RAMS Camp. This is
the Doug Gotlap Show on Fox Sports Radio. Be sure
to catch live editions of the Doug dot Leap Show

usually say, but I'm gonna say them upcoming in regards
to the Tyreek Hill situation that's in about fifteen seconds.

game time, have an experienced player help you stay ahead
of the game, put their experience into play. At Farmers
dot com. We are Farmers. Welcome in Snug Gotlieb Show
Live here from u C Irvine. You see I is
(39:31):
mm hmmm. I'm gonna say forty five minutes from the
l A Coliseum with a RAMS call home. It's probably
a good hour and a half. This is all with
no traffic, which does actually occur in southern California if
you if you know when to go, where to go,
it's a good hour forty five from where the rams
(39:51):
normally trained. Rams normally trained up in Thousand Oaks, which
is kind of equidistant to l A, just the opposite
side of l A from where we are. Why would
you train here, Well, it's also probably about thirty degrees
cooler in this part of southern California it is. I'm
gonna say, some of you guys can check your phones.
(40:12):
I'm gonna guess without even looking, it's a good seventy
seven degrees and and breezy where we are in Irvine.
Where in the southernmost part of Irvine which borders Newport
Beach um as opposed to seventy three degrees. Okay, So
look up Thousand Oaks and I'm guessing Thousand Oaks is
probably today it's probably a good ninety and maybe a
ninety five depending Again, I don't know where their facility
(40:35):
is in terms of how much window much breeze you get,
But only eighty one today in Thousand Oaks is nice.
But you can get You get days in Thousand Oaks
where it's a hundred and five in July easy, where
you will almost never get the hottest to get to
Newport Beaches eighty five degrees and that that's a really
really hot day. So the point is you come and
everybody stays in a hotel This facility is really nice.
(40:58):
They do a great job here at you Ce Irvine.
It's close to a couple of nice shopping centers. They
stay in a really nice hotel and to college campus.
It's like one of the sleepiest college campuses you're ever
gonna find for school of its size, about twenty students
and you've got great fields. And this is the since
they've moved to southern California, this is the spot where
they want to hold their training camps. Great um and
(41:21):
the Rams have done a tremendous job of cultivating some
of the older fan base that used to be in
Orange County. Remember the l A Rams before they moved
to St. Louis in the early nineties, were based in
Orange County. They played it and I'm stadium where the
Angels still call home. So it's a way. It was
(41:41):
a way of Hey, we're the l A. Rams, we live,
we trained thousand oaks, we play in downtown l A
in south central l A where USC plays until the
new stadium opens. But we're still Orange County's football team.
It's done been a great job, Um, But this was
a a in which they could kind of they could
(42:02):
grow their fan base or regrow their fan base in
Orange County from the one that they had departed. This
is going back years or so ago, and you go
back to two years ago when we first came here.
It was something special with the Rams, but they just
couldn't figure it out. And Sean McVeigh obviously helped change
(42:23):
all of that. He energized Jared Golf in year two,
and then in year three they get to the Super Bowl,
third year of Jared Goff's career. And they also had
the help of this guy who came over from the
Buffalo Bills and has just been a dynamic production wide
receiver since he's he's joined the Rams. The defending Super
Bowl champion Rams training camp site and Doug Gotlin show
(42:45):
here on Fox Sport trader Robert Woods is our guest,
how are you hold on real quick? Gotta flip beyond
there for having me on here. How's what's this camp
liking comparison to camps to the past. Uh, this grinding?
I think, um, you know, initially, uh, through the first
year was just grasping the offense, understanding the team, understanding
our coach and philosophy. I think now and it's just uh,
(43:07):
just a lot more advanced. We're already understanding our coach
what he expects from us. So now we're able to
come out here and compete at the highest speed, highest
level and uh really just be ourselves. We relaxed, be
comfortable with our coach, be comfortable with our teammates, and uh,
you know how to practice. Okay, So you mentioned that's
a great When you first got here, you're trying to
figure out, all right, what's this guy about, what are
(43:27):
we running? What was your first impression of Sean McVeigh. Well,
already already uh before I got here, I you know,
phoned in trying to get some some inside scoop on
on coach McVey. So who'd you call? I call right
Hilliard from the Redskins, his receiver, coach um with the Redskins. Uh,
and for me with the year in Buffalo, a coach
that I trusted, and he was just telling me, you know,
(43:49):
he's he you know, he's one of the biggest minds
of the Redskins. He makes this offense go, make this
team go, and and I just you know, I trusted
his word and and and trust Uh his ability came
here and that's exactly what it was, and he was
a young coach, great memory, great just grasped with offense
of of plays, of scheme and m first O t A.
(44:12):
He came in with his playbook, his plan. We end
up running it um exactly what he wanted and came
back to training camp and it was that offense with
a whole lot more fitting to us. Our players, Our
style of offense are running back, our receivers, routes that
you know that he saw us run. He took some
routes out, he put some routes in and really just
(44:34):
a coach who adapted his offense to his team and
just it's just it's it was just a perfect mess.
It's it's a it's a it's as incredible insight because
he came in he had a plan, this is what
I want to do. But he's like, well, hold on,
you can't. You know, you can't make somebody do something
that they're not capable of, which is how, you know,
how you always want you want to coach the way
(44:56):
you want to be coached, right, you built this team
and he's like, you know this guy does this, well, um,
this is what you know what I want to you know,
get done in my offense. So let's combine to both
and let's make this thing comfortable for you and comfortable
for us. To the layman, we see it, and I
see it, and I say, what's interesting is he tries
to make so many things look the same. Right, there's
always the wide receiver in motion for the jet suite,
(45:18):
but like it looks the same, and and yet obviously
so many things are different. Um, was that like anything
else you would run? Was that more like something from college? Like?
What what was that approach like for you who had
been in the Nation Football League previous to getting here? Uh?
Just uh, I would says, it's standard football. Um, but
(45:39):
just what he brings to it is just the just
makes it way more advancing. And you you're doing things
with a purpose. You're not just running routes. I mean,
we're running the same routes from the beginning of football,
but just now we're opening up our own ones. We're
creating our own windows. We're making the defense move to
us and not you know, react to the defense. That's
(45:59):
just we're you know, we're putting the pressure. We're applying
the pressure in his offense. Um, making everything looking like
make the defense, you know, be discipline with their eyes.
But other than that, Uh, it's a whole lot for
them to see. Okay, So from the when was you
first met him until now now it's two years later.
Now everybody's telling him he's the greatest coach every Right,
(46:20):
if you know him, you can get a head coaching
job in the NFL. Right now, he's engaged to getting married, right,
he's getting contract extension. What's he like now to deal
with as opposed to two years ago? Uh? Just super
same guy, super laid back, same cool coach. Uh. Players
coach come out here, um and and and really work
with this player's work with receivers, hands on sometime he's
(46:43):
come out here and they give us a look from
a cornerback perspective, or he'll show us how he wants
to route. So you want to coach, who couldn't you know,
show you how it's done as well, which is the
benefits of having a young coach, but just being the
same coach, high energy, Uh, knowing all his players, running
these competitive practices and um, really just just a great coach.
(47:04):
Robert was joining us in the Doug Gotlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, your offense changed dramatically when
Cooper went down with the injury. UM, but in many
ways it opens up opportunities for you. Um, what what
did what did you learn about yourself or about your
ability to have a different role in this offense when
when that occurred. Uh, just I felt like, you know,
(47:26):
that's that's what I do. You know. I feel like
I always, you know, take pride to myself as being
a complete receiver, being able to play inside, play outside,
UH play, X play, F play Z literally play every
single position. UM, some running back UH plays as well.
But just just really knowing this offense. So when you know,
when Cooper Cup went down, you know, it's unfortunate event,
(47:48):
but just doing doing what I do. Like, all right now,
it's it's on display now. You know we're we're Cooper's out. Um.
I think Brandon I'm getting injured with the concussion that
game as well, But just um, just in that situation,
it's like, all right now it's on on full display.
Now I'm moving from F, I'm moving to Z, moving
to X. UM. You know we've got a rookie receiver
(48:09):
in there. I'm helping him out, coaching him up. Um,
we've got Josh Reynos coming and making plays. Uh, but
just just being the leader. But did the processing that
you're able to do to not just know, Okay, my
role changes, but now I got a rookie that has
to change, right, And that's It's one of the things
that Sean values is I don't only have to have
guys that athletically can produce, but have to intellectually produce
(48:31):
as well, which I'm sure means and and probably one
of the reasons they gave you a race, right they
realize all these other things you can do outside of Hey,
he can really catch the football. Yeah, I mean you
look at it as I mean, you have your you
have your starters out there. You have Cooper Cup myself, uh,
Brandon Cooks, three guys who are taken pretty much almost
every single rep with Jared, with the ones. The focus
(48:51):
is on us, really, and then you get two guys
who are studying and may not get the reps, and
really it is just holding them to to the same standard.
We always compete here at practice and we tell them
when I hold them to the same stantard and no
drop off if if anybody goes down, we have to
be able to play at a high level and a
high standard. And uh and we did that in the game,
you know, and and me being the leader, Um, I
(49:12):
have to make sure everybody in our group's ready to
play at that at that level. Um. Okay, So but
there is there is still kind of something left out
there right there, one one game away. How much does
that change your personal and your team's motivation considering how
close you actually came to winning the last game which
everyone dreams of just putting it, put all the work
(49:34):
in just last year, it still putting all the work
in to get to that point. Um, to get all
to that game and get that close and kind of
fall short as uh, I mean each put in the work,
you know, can you have to Here's my question? I
guess can you have the perspective of like I said
here and I say, hey, the the NFC champions and
now my most people would say, well they lost in
(49:54):
Super Bowl, Like yeah, but they got to the Super Bowl, right,
there's thirty other teams that wanted to get this your
bowl and it was a hell of a football game. Um.
I just did my thing. I think we're we're better,
That's That's what I'm saying. Better, this better this year
and uh, of course the better team end up winning
the game, so I can't say that. But the team
(50:17):
doesn't always win the game. Okay, well the world. You
know what I mean. You've played enough, you played enough
ball to know like the better team doesn't know it
may come, it comes down to situations. Correct. Yes, Um,
but I feel we're a better team able to have
that experience, get to that point, have that loss, I
think makes us a better team. Just the hunger of
(50:38):
just working of coming off of four and twelve first
round loss to get to the uh super Bowl. Just
I feel like every process of every year makes this
team hungrier, uh to just go out and get it.
We're adding more players, we add, whether we add Clay Matthews,
this team is a lot more hungrier to to just
get back in itself will make us better. Robert Woods
(51:01):
joining us in the Dug Gotlip Show. Is there a
play in your mind from the Super Bowl that you see?
You know, you get your mental DVR? Like, man, if
I had just done this, do you do you have
do you have that? Or you've been able to mentally
emotionally move on. I was able to, uh emotionally move
on from the game. Um, I did. I did watch
the game a couple of times. Saw some players like, oh,
like if if I could have hit this gap, or
(51:23):
you know, if I could have broke this tackle. Of
course you look at it and it's like if I
could have, if I could have. And that's why you
go out there and train, you work out, you go
and make these plays. You you train even harder, you
do drills to be able to make those plays next time.
And I feel like, you know, this year coming up,
and I don't really look at any of those players,
it's like, you know, I could have did this. Now
(51:43):
is more so like I will do that. I will
break this tackle. I will go out and snatch the ball,
or staying bounds on the sideline and be able to
tiptoe and keep running in or split the defenders and
make a guy miss. It's really just all about getting
better every time you turn on the film and every
time you touched the field. All right, last thing, We've
talked with Golf a lot, and you know, like some
of these quarterbacks they have these dynamic personalities where and
(52:06):
he's he's so laid back, he's so chill that she
almost feels like, what's that guy? Like in the huddle
in New Orleans when you guys are trying to drive
down the field win the game. Like, what's that? What
is the real Jared golf life? Yeah, real Jered Gold.
I mean he is super chill, he's super calm, uh
but great great teammates, super mature, super respectful. Um. But Jess,
(52:29):
when you're out there in competer, you know, he's you
know I need especially in that loud atmosphere NFC Championship,
he's no talking, no talking about you know, the previous play,
no talking about assignments. I need your eyes on my
mouth because it's loud and it's just demanding and everybody
is silent. Where he's running this offense and the whole
game is it is under Jared's control. And it's like
(52:50):
that on the sideline if he's bringing us up, you know,
all eyes on Jared at halftime. Jared jare is our leader.
Jared controls his team, his offense. Uh uh. And he's
a true true leader. I know you say he's calm,
but on on this field, he's he's our director and
he's our coach. On the you mentioned I've heard Wettle
is like football genius back there so when you guys
(53:13):
are going eleven on eleven to have been, has been,
there's been a moment yet to be like, damn, he
knows what we're doing. He's he's calling out. It's really
he's just putting his communication. I would say his biggest
thing that he's brought here so far and his leadership
is uh. He's getting the guys uh and and in
a great position to play pre snap. Um. He's getting
(53:35):
guys UH pre aligned to where put them in the
best position to where, you know, mess with our mind.
I heard him today and walked through telling Taylor to
hold his disguise a little bit longer, hold it longer,
hold it longer. I noticed he was coming down and
what was coaching him up, like a little hold it longer.
And you need somebody like that in your team who's
getting his guys better. He's getting NiCl better, he's getting
(53:58):
Marcus Peters getting the key better. UM and really is
making our defense better to communication. The disguises are are
really taluenting for us, UM miss training camera what we
need and make you better for for the regular season.
And we we know you got a lot of travel. You
gotta practice. Come up tonight thanks much for your time.
All right. Robert Woods, of course rightfully got a big
raise from the RAMS, part of their dynamic wide receiving Corps,

part of what led them to an NFC championship. Giving

Doug Got Leap Show here on Fox Sports Radio Live
at Rams Camp. I'm gonna play for you what Tyreek
Hill said to the media over the weekend. Uh And
then what I'm gonna say is probably going to be
(55:47):
the opposite of what anybody is supposed to say, but
it's the reality of the situation. Okay. Here's Tyreek Hill
speaking of the media yesterday for the first time since
the uh A portion uh A secretly recorded audio conversation
between he and his I think she still has fiance.
I don't know that has been reported. They were engaged
(56:09):
to being married. The mother of his two children was released.
Take a listen punching my son in my chest. That
would probably refer me teaching my son how to box,
because we do. Got Boxton glazza Um at our house,
and I was sunning, like he's like iron Man, so
he loves iron Man. Aqua man. He's like daddy, come on,
come on, come on, all the time. So that's that's
what it is, man. And you know, sometimes things get
(56:31):
thrown out of context, you know, when feelings get involved
in emotions. But I ain't gonna get into all that
right now. Okay, look, I would say two things here
and it makes you mad. It's only because you bring
in some some some bias, some some bias of a previous,
foregone thought of what you're supposed to say and not
(56:52):
supposed to say. Tyreek Hill is not very smart, Okay.
It has nothing to do with the sport he plays
or the color of his skin. It's simply he couldn't posse.
He's just not a very bright human being. And I
could use some of it's his actions, his repeated actions,
his but just like, dude, you had five months to
(57:15):
understand what and how you and I'm sure there's somebody
who advised and media wise, I want to say how
to say, and it just it I I get it.
Maybe he didn't actually punch his son in the chest.
His son probably does want to be iron man or aquaman.
He probably does have boxing gloves. Just do you know
(57:36):
how it comes across when you're talking about a then
I think three year old boy, like then, three year
old boy doesn't get punched in the chest. That's just
not something that happens. And and I and I I'm
trying to decipher what he's saying and understand he's staying
(57:56):
what was recorded on a conversation is taken out of
context from the reality pity of what his son might
have said. And I'll give you a parallel in a second.
Here's the second part to it. Though, she's a big
part of the problem. Now, this is not victim shaming. Okay,
So now what we're doing. And there's she's a and
(58:20):
I wouldn't use the term psycho, but she's she it's
a toxic relationship, and she does not believe to have
believed to have a believable account. That's what was said.
This is what happened a year ago. Zach Smith, the
then wide receivers coach of Ohio State. I said he
ain't very smart. Now, one of the things that keeps
(58:43):
these couples together or puts them in the same place
far too often is the children. That's what happened Zack
Smith and his ex wife. But the reason that urban
Meyer only got a suspension and didn't feel like he
should have gotten suspension because the wife didn't have a
believable ex wife do not have a believable account. That
she's a big part of the problem. I I understand
(59:05):
that we've victim shamed in the past, and we shouldn't
in the case of domestic violence, sexual assault or whatever
in the big picture. You're right in the small picture
in this particular case. Sorry, Like when you entrap your
the your future husband with a secret conversation and then
you only release a portion of an audio tape and
(59:29):
your account is not believed by either the authorities or
the NFL. You know, then you do not have a
believable account. People people who know, and we don't know enough,
all right, we get a portion of the information. People
who know don't believe her, just like people who know
don't believe Zack Smith's sex wife, and Zack Smith's an
(59:52):
idiot and Tyreek kills an idiot. Let's just be honest.
If you you can't figure out a smarter way to
say what he said, or the nuts or not say
anything at all, Like, I don't think it's crazy to say, like,
I just don't think Tariko is a great football player.
(01:00:13):
He's he's probably the fastest guy to ever play in
the NFL. That doesn't give him carte blanche to do
whatever he wants out the football field. That doesn't clear
him a wrongdoing. I don't know what the NFL knows
and what we don't know, but whatever it is, considering
how reactive and overreactive we are because of years of
not protecting women, my guests would be they don't believe
(01:00:35):
her at all. So it's kind of like the Zack
smith thing. It's different but the same. She's a big
part of the problem, just like Zack Smiths X why
is a big part of the problem. And he's not
very smart and that's why they keep saying things In
his own mind, Darry Hill probably walked away from that
press common school. Yeah, I killed it and did a
(01:00:55):
great job. See, I brought an iron Man an aquaman.
I'm in. Can't go wrong with Imanuman. Everybody likes Ironman.
If you don't like Ironman like Aquaman and the pr
people for the Kanseie. She's like, he should have just
gone with no comment. Why don't we go in no comment?
(01:01:17):
So I'm sorry if that, if that is unsettling to you,
if that's insensitive to you, if you think because I'm
a white male, that I'm not trying to act like
I'm somehow superior. You understand that some person cannot articulate
something that they had five months prepare a way to
properly articulate it, and you go like, hey, guy, he's
(01:01:38):
just not smart enough to cat being in this conversation
and he gotta he gotta. He got a pardon from
Roger Goodell. I don't know if it's because he's the
cheetah and he does the peace time when he runs away,
or he placed for the chief so they called in
a favor, or she's just she's just the psycho and
they don't believe her. I'm led to believe probably a
(01:01:59):
little bit everything, but mostly she's part of the problem.
He that very smart, which is just like this zax
meth thing. We'll try and find out what the hell
the Mets were thinking. Did you did? Did you guys?
I know We don't traditionally play a ton of attention
to baseball, but trade deadline baseball, especially now there is
(01:02:21):
one trade deadline. He kind of couldn't miss this one.

Fox Sports Radio. Okay, so did you so? The trade
(01:02:42):
gun lies upon us? And everyone just assumed that the
Mets before the trade deadline would trade Noah Syndergard. No
Syndergard thor Um statistically not having a great year, but
every nobody knows you have a great stuff. Plus the
numbers are up across the league, so it's really hard
to tell, like is he are guys having a bad
year or um? Is he simply having a decent year
(01:03:02):
when everybody's given up home runs, everybody's given up massive
amounts of runs because the ball is quite literally juiced, right,
It's hard to It's hard to know. But we're sitting
there thinking, all right, the Mexicanna move Mexicana. Move a
guy in Mexicana, Move a guy, Mexicana, move a guy.
Because the Mats before their last series were they weren't
(01:03:23):
statistically eliminated, but no one thought this was a year
for the New York Bats. And then they win four
games in a row and they put themselves at least
in the discussion of a wild card spot. They are
at fifty and fifty five, still prime suspects to move
(01:03:44):
on from Noah Syndergard. Now there um, their general manager
is a former agent, right, and as a former agent,
the thought is that that it would be really hard
for him to move on from no Ah Syndergard because
(01:04:05):
I believe he used to represent Noah Syndergard. All right,
So even though he doesn't represent his interest now, they're
still a relationship with uh no A Syndergard. I'm talking
about uh Rody van Wagenen. So instead of trading Noah
Syndergard for and you're not it's not like the NBA
(01:04:25):
where you're getting like a Paul George move mountains, but
get a couple of legit prospects, they trade for Marcus Stroman.
Wait wait, wait, wait, wait, do what that's right? They
traded for Marcus Stroman. Stroman is was one of the
top pictures that most likely were going to be moved
(01:04:48):
in the trade deadline. He's twenty eight years old. He's
a groundball pitcher. Of course, in this day and age
of players that lift the baseball, you need somebody that's
they're a strikeout picture or a groundball pitcher. Again, there's
there's an issue with the groundball pitcher in the second
I'll get to with the New York Mets. But he's
(01:05:10):
also under contract for an additional season. So when everybody
thought the the basically it's like a card game, right,
the New York Mets they have a bad hand, right.
It wasn't like they started with King Hai king Ace
high right. No no, no, same suit, no no, no.
They basically started with it started the year with you
(01:05:31):
know five and a six, and when when the next
three cards are laid down, like, oh, okay, what are
the last two cards? Like one's the river, right, the
last one the river, the turn and then there's the river.
(01:05:51):
So when the tird card came down, it was almost
as if they had you know, five or six. When
a three carge went down, they had another five, and
then the turn is another five, Like, oh, you're usually
not gonna win with three fives, but what the hell,
So instead of folding, they go all in like they
(01:06:14):
they zagged when everybody they thought they would zig. If
it makes no sense, it is the Mets. If it
makes no sense, it is baseball. I've I've said this
before about baseball, right. One of the great things about
baseball is you can explain the unexplainable in life and
in baseball by simply saying it's baseball. Give you an example.
The and the Angels take two from the l A
(01:06:37):
Dodgers in Chevezervie. Dodgers, best team in baseball, Angels take
two for him. They come home, they take on the Baltimorials,
who are the worst team in baseball, and they lose
three in a row. To that. They just lose three
in a road to the Orioles. The first game they lost,
which I think was in how many innings with it
it was in ext ratings like fifteen innings or something
like that. They lost to a position player who didn't
(01:06:59):
throw over sixty like what they lost to the Baltimore Orioles,
who gave up a hundred runs faster this year than
any team in the history of baseball. And they lose
three in a row. And then last night they stole one,
they snuck one out again. They go one in three
against the Orioles after taking two from the Dodgers in Schpezervine.
(01:07:21):
Do you know why that happened? That's baseball, alright. Anytime
you want to explain the unexplainable, you just go, Hey,
that's baseball. Why do we drive in a parkway and
park on a driveway? That's baseball. Why would the Mets
trade for one of the top pitchers out there on
the market when everybody thought that they were going to
trade their top picture. That's baseball or that's the Mets.
(01:07:46):
Either actually work so but in many ways, I actually
kind of like it. Not here here's the problem. And
by the way, Stroman, he's one of those if if
it was when we were kids and when our parents
were kids. He's six and eleven this season. Yeah, he
actually has a two point nine six r A right
like he's got an under three e r A. Six
(01:08:08):
and eleven is not his not in ain't his fault.
But dude, um, I'd say the biggest problem is that
the Mets are terrible at fielding of baseball, and he's
going to cause them to sixty of the time. He
gives up a groundball, and unlike sex Panther, six of
(01:08:30):
the time, it won't work a hundred percent of the
time when you're a terrible fielding team like the Mets.
Why would the Mets trade for a groundball pitcher when
they're terrible in the field and everybody thought they were
a seller. Instead they become a buyer. That's baseball. That's
that's baseball. Is Baker may feel deserving of where he's
(01:08:50):
being ranked by his peers. Find out next on The
Doug Gotlip Show. Be sure to catch live editions of
The Doug dot Leap Show week days in noon eastern
three on Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the i
Heart Radio app. Doug Gottlief Show rolls on here on
Fox Sports Radio every day. At this time, I'd like
to get you caught up on a previous show on
Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports when we call it and
(01:09:13):
now what does the Fox say? This is Colin Cowherd
reacting to the NFL Network's Top hundred Players, which ranked
Baker Mayfield ahead of Deshaun Watson. We now have a
new player in the NFL that is completely disrespected, and
his name is Deshaun Watson, he's the quarterback for Houston.
(01:09:35):
So the NFL Network put Baker Mayfield ahead of Deshaun Watson.
And this list, by the way, is always based on
last year. It's voted on by players. Let me give
you a few numbers. Last year, Deshaun Watson one eleven games,
Baker won six. Well, what Baker is a very accurate
precision passer, really, because behind the worst offensive line in
(01:09:56):
the league, Deshaun Watson completed sixty eight percentiments throws. Well, well, well,
but Baker yards Deshaun Watson check interceptions Baker fourteen, DeShawn nine.
You know, by the way, I'm not even mentioning the
fact that one of them won the high jump championship
in the ninth grade in Georgia. One of them maybe
(01:10:18):
is the best athlete in the league. A quarterback Deshaun
Watson five rushing touchdowns and five fifty yards rushing behind
an atrocious offensive line with no tight ends and no
running game. NFL Network, are you just trying to get
under my skin? Are you watching the games? I I
think we're we're falling a little bit. We're we're falling
a little bit. For the uh, Cleveland Browns thing right,
(01:10:42):
the the hype machine, which is the clean Browns, which
is kind of genius. I mean, here's a team that
didn't make the playoffs, that didn't do well against the
good teams on their roster, and you know, you know,
one year removed from being on a on streak where
they won one game over two years, firing their coach
(01:11:04):
mid season last year, people are calling them Super Bowl favorites,
like we're just the NFL network is just as guilty,
just as guilty of buying into the hype machine as
as others are. Whereas the Houston Texans, no matter what
you think of them, and Bill O'Brien and not having
a general manager like they want eleven games. Last year,
(01:11:25):
Levin Shaun Watson set the world on fire, then tore
his a c l after in his first year, and
then it continues to become a more solid, competent quarterback.
But I thought Colin's best argument we didn't have in there,
in which he said, like, look the attributes that um
Baker Mayfield has that everyone talks about. Now, Baker is
(01:11:48):
great at processing, gets up the line of the scriptage
you can really really read. And some people think that
Deshaun Watson is not that guy. I know one front
I know one general manager in the NFL is like dude.
I don't think Shaun Watson very good at all, but
I think he's pretty good. I think he's more athletic
than Baker, even off to a c L injuries. I
think he has a better arm than Baker, maybe not
as accurate as Baker. And he can't really go by
(01:12:12):
completion percentage because when you're under duress, there's lots of
screen passes and you know, dump offs or whatever. But
he's also an incredible leader. Like Deshaun Watson is a
remarkable leader. So is Baker Mayfield. But I would say
Deshan that does it with a little bit less fanfare,
and in many ways that makes him easier for him
to lead a football team. I'm I'm with I'm with
(01:12:35):
Colin on I would prefer to Sean in year three
to Bakerer in year two. Do I think the gap
is seismic? No? No, I think there's a gap between
the two um and I think that Baker is surrounded
by a better supporting cast. I think there has been
I think there has been uh an uptick in the
(01:12:58):
quality of of the skill position players with the Cleveland Browns.
I'm interested in their offensive line and how that works out.
But if you told me that Baker has better guys
around him on offense, I'm okay with that. I also
would tell you that I think Bill O'Brien is a
better offensive mind than what you have working in Cleveland.
But offensive minds can't patch up the holes of that
(01:13:20):
offensive line that they've had. They have a better number
one wide receiver, but the overall receiving corps I would
give to the Cleveland Browns on paper, and the overall
running corps I would give to the Cleveland Browns on paper.
The gap is not that big. I do think Baker
processes information and is more accurate. But I would prefer
(01:13:41):
to Shaun Watson because he's a great leader, because he's
not terribly inaccurate, because he's more athletic, because he has
a better or Baker Mayfield. So that that that's you know, now,
it's interesting those rankings. There is also a poll taken
and NFL GMS voted Aaron Rodgers the best quarterback in
(01:14:04):
the National Football League, and I think it's amazing, you know,
I read some quotes from Aaron Rodgers um here this
this weekend in regards to the his his relationship with
his new head coach, And if I would be I
would be thrilled if I was a Packer fan. It
feels like it again. You can't take everything, everything that
(01:14:28):
is said to be exactly what happens. But Aaron Rodgers
has said time and again that they are. He's in
the he's in the uh the quarterback meeting room every
single day and uh and you know, we're talking every
single day and we're working through things. And I'm a
visual learner and so simply saying it and writing it
(01:14:49):
on a piece of paper I don't get. And Matt
Laflour has done an amazing job of showing it to me.
And it feels like he's buying in more to what
he's selling. None of it matters they hit the football
field anyway. If I was to lay a bet, I
would lay a bet on Aaron Rodgers being the m
v P of this link and a down year last season.
(01:15:12):
In a down year, he had twenty five touchdown passed
in two interceptions. That was a bad year for Aaron Rodgers.
One that went south, one in which his coach was
fired before the season ended, one in which they had
injuries and dysfunction at running back and a wide receiver.
Now you have a new system one by the way
(01:15:33):
that the Rams, you know, kind of like with the
Rams run with more mature personnel as they changed their
often in a second year with their defense, and I
think their defense will be the better because of it.
They've drafted well personally, and it's I mean, I've always
said that Aaron Rodgers checks everybody the boxes you need
to check at quarterback right, Um, you need to have
(01:15:55):
a strong arm. I mean Chad Pennington was able to
get away with having a bad arm because he was
so accurate in such a good leader for a long time,
and he got worse and worse and worse. But you
need to have a strong arm. You need to be accurate.
Aaron Rodgers is both. You need to be bright and
process information. He can do that. You need to be
(01:16:16):
able to deliver from the pocket. He can do that.
You need to also be able to move the pocket
with your feet. You can do that. Run for a
first out occasionally, can do that. You need to be tough.
Can you play through injury? Can you lead? Aaron Rodgers
biggest issue is uh his buy into the offense, because
that was the problem last year, right, so many of
the so many of the there's no interceptions because if
(01:16:39):
he didn't like something that he saw, you just throw
it away and would go on to the next play
instead of turning the which is actually brilliant in its
own because the less two fewer turnovers you have, the
more likely you are to be successful. And he simply
didn't turn the ball over. He shall only bible to
make big plays in the clutch, on the road, in
the Super Bowl, in the NFC champion, your game, in
(01:17:00):
the playoffs against Cowboy. He's done all these things. Can
he buy into the offense? Can he get along with
coaching staff? And those two things kind of go hand
in hand, And I think in your one he will.
I think he was yearning for fresh air, and now
that he got it, he will revel in. It is
(01:17:21):
Ezekiel Elliott losing more and more leverage by the day.
I'll tell you where Zeke went wrong. Upcoming next plus
less Knee joins us. He's the Rams general manager. How
challenging is it to put together another great team? Right out? Next?
Be sure to catch live editions of The Doug Dot

Dog Got Leap Show? Fox Sports Radio Our three live
from RAMS Training Camp. You listen to Doug Got Leap Show.
Appreciate you. I also appreciate our love. We got up
in Friedburg, Maine. I gotta I gotta text my wife
and my friends are with us in Maine. In one second,
I want to make sure I give the proper shout
(01:18:05):
shout out. Um. What was the guy's name at the
bar in the Maine? Okay, so we were at there's
a place called three o two. Have you ever in Friedburg, Main?
There's a place called three O two. It's on Highway
three O two. Friburg's a title of town just outside
(01:18:28):
of a bigger town of North Conway, New Hampshires, right
on the border White Mountains of New Hampshire. Is beautiful.
I was up there visiting. My kids are a summer camp,
old school summer camp, and we're a dinner and uh
there's a the waiter. It was really really cool, great
guy because I was I wasn't dying of thirst, but
(01:18:48):
you know he used the expression dying of thirst. I
felt like I just got out of the the Sahara desert.
And he kept him coming with incredible I mean real
homemade lemonade with their arnold palmers, which you might drink
a choice, and um, he was great. My wife had
a Japanese beetle in her salad, you know, and he
like caught most of our meal because of it. It
was a little extra protein. I thought she should go.
(01:19:08):
I watched Naked and Afraid all the time. I thought,
you know, she could last a couple of days on
that Japanese beetle. Anyway, Um, he was cool. He when
he handed me the check, he said, boom, let's see
your show every day. That was cool. I like that.
And then when I got up to go to the restroom,
a guy came over to the table, and I'll find
out what his name was. I can't remember what his
name was anyway. Um, so we had some fans there.
(01:19:30):
Some people in Boston got security. Yesterday in Boston was
saying he listens every day on satellite radio. And then
earlier today I was over in Irvine and I was
trying to side between Chick fil A and and in
and out. I had a little little bit cheap day today,
played a basketball game. Last night. The guys were playing basketball.
They like the All Ball podcast as well as the
(01:19:50):
show on podcast. Um and uh anyway, so like, look,
if you've listened to the show, you know we're going
Rams camp, Chargers Camp, Cowboys Camp. I want to go
up to the Raiders camp which is up in Napa.
Of course, the Rams are going up to Raiders Camp
in Napa in about a week. The Doug Gottlieb Show
(01:20:11):
is brought to you by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen
almost everything, so we're not to cover almost anything. When
it's game time, have an experienced player help you stay
at the game, put their experience into play. At Farmers
dot com, we are so um so oftentimes training camps
are boring. They just are like I can sit here
(01:20:33):
and tell you man, all reports are Cooper Cup looks great,
yesterday made an unbelievably competitive catch. Um and that the
Rams Rams believe like the big question in uh there.
One of their biggest acquisitions over the offseason was was
(01:20:56):
Age really right? You got Clay Matthews. That's a quae
s Mark and Clay Matthews still run. And the Rams
think absolutely positively that they can still run. And then
at free safety, could Eric and Eric Wedell still run?
Because you remember Eric Weddle with the Baltimore Ravens. People
expected him to retire. He was retired for all of
about two hours, and then all of a sudden, he
(01:21:16):
gets a call from less Need and the Rams and
he's back and he's he's great at processing things and
getting guys into the right defenses, and he basically coaching
the football field. They're actually this is interesting to me.
You know, the one player on every defense gets a microphone,
(01:21:37):
so it goes to the headsets so they can communicate
with him with the rest of the team. Most teams
it's the middle linebacker. It's the mic linebacker. The Rams
are going to give that to Eric Wettle. He's because
he can see the whole the whole field. But all
that stuff to most people, boring training camps aren't about
(01:21:58):
who's there. It becomes more about who's not there. Right,
Melvin Gordon's not the Chargers camp. Will be there next week,
Maybe he'll be there, Probably won't. Um. You know, the
the leading wide receiver in the National Football League, Michael Thomas,
is not at Saints camp. That becomes the bigger story
about the Saints than anything else Havant, and probably the
(01:22:21):
biggest story is the league's leading rusher is Zekiel Elliott
is so far no show. Now it's really important to
point this out, really important that um just like trading
or Pacasol Paul George walking in and asked to be
traded one year into a contract extension that he said
(01:22:43):
would keep min Oklahoma City. Like, I think that's a
bad look for the NBA if you gave a Zekelly
a new contract, Like, what's the stop se Kwan Barkley
from going? Hey, I had yards last year rushing. I
should be paid more money. I should be paid more money.
Like at some point you're getting paid. I want you.
(01:23:05):
This is I had a conversation with somebody yesterday in
regards this. Like NFL players like to use the argument, hey,
in any other league, our contracts are fully guaranteed. First
of all, zeke Elliott's contract is fully guaranteed completely. Every
penny rookie contracts are fully guaranteed. And if he doesn't
(01:23:27):
like how much he makes as the number four pick,
well then he has a problem. Um, he has a
problem with the c b A. It should be pointed
out that while Ezeki Elliott will tell the world, hey,
I'm only gonna make three point eight million dollars this year,
the fact is, the way in which contracts are structured,
(01:23:48):
he made sixteen point eight million dollars in his first year.
So when you average it all out, you know the
averages seven or eight million dollars, and in a rookie
contract which is fully guaranteed in by the way, when
they pick up the fifth year option, next year's contract
would be nine million dollars, which is not the thirteen
million dollars the top going rate for the fourteen million
dollars Todd Ruley. But nine million it's good money. It's
(01:24:13):
a little bit light of his production. But if you
want to make the argument that, hey, in any other business, dude,
in any other contract in the NBA, if you're halfway
through a contract, you know what you can't do. You
can't sit there and hold out and hope to get
a new contract that doesn't actually exist, doesn't actually exist,
(01:24:34):
don't having a baseball Yeah, go like, hey, man, I
know I got a five year contract, but how much
does Aaron Judgement. Now Aaron Judge is going to get
paid a a s ton of money. But last year
he made six hundred thousand dollars. This year it's slightly
higher than like sixty. That's it. Like, dude, in any
other world, you've got two years left in a deal
(01:24:57):
which gave you a bunch of the money up front.
You know you can't do Hey, I think I'm worth more.
That's great, Get back to work. Don't tell me. NFL
contracts aren't fully guaranteed. His actually his rookie contracts are.
And it feels like as he flies off to Cabo
Soun Lucas where uh he trained during his six games suspension, which,
(01:25:17):
by the way, like let's not bury the lead. Zeke
Eellott is a great running back. Zeke Yellott is a
pain in the ass, got spender for six games and then,
like an idiot, had too much of drink in a
concert and kind of tries the big boy and big
dog a security guard because that's what all tough NFL
running backs do, and had got called in the principal's office,
(01:25:41):
gets away with getting his wrist slapped. Hey, don't ever
do that again. And now he wants more money, and
oh yeah, by the way, weren't he weren't a We're
in a league where the running back has become less
and less important. I think he's great. I think he
and Christian McCaffrey at the end of this year will
be viewed as the two best running backs in this league.
(01:26:03):
And I think one of the things that they both
do and Zekelle it's great. They're both great blockers, great blockers.
But I think what you're seeing in the Dallas Cowboys
is Jerry has always relented. Jerry has always been a
pro players guy, and they're time and he's trying to
take advantage of Jerry. And Jerry's got Steve and his
(01:26:25):
son who's running things now, who doesn't do business that way.
Take a listen to Jerry Jones Euler today. You don't
have to have a rushing champion to win a Super Bowl,
but Emmett was the first one to do it. And
that's one of the dilemmas that running back. You can
win Super Bowls and not have the Emmett Smith back
(01:26:46):
there are not have Zeke back there. Consequently, when we
are looking and putting Zeke's contract in place, we've got
to realize that the ultimate goal is to win the
Super Bowl. And so you've got to do all of
the things along with having Zeke that allow you to
have other players so that you can win the super book.
(01:27:08):
Thank you, all right, thank you. Like look, dude, the
Cowboys have gotten closer and more competitive since they've done
it this way. And by the way, the years of
being able to benefit from having a quarterback making no
money are essentially over. Like they they had the benefit
(01:27:34):
of having a quarterback make nothing, nothing and he couldn't
renegotiate by league rules, couldn't renegotiate. So those years are done,
and so now the Cowboys feel like they see the
finish line. I was like, hey man, a little bit
(01:27:55):
more money. This this, this is what reminds you have
you guys ever, you guys that are visited up foreign countries, Okay,
so I would encourage you to go to Israel. I've
been Israel several times over now I'm Jewish, and so
most Jewish people go and see the holy sites, um,
the Jewish holy sites. My wife was raised Southern Baptist.
(01:28:16):
So there was one year I was playing there and
this is in two thousand and it's in two thousand two.
It's probably like February two two and my my wife
grew up in a small town, Oklahoma, drum Right, Oklahoma,
and a guy she grew up with was a marine
stationed at the U. S. Consulate in Jerusalem. Consulate Consulate
(01:28:41):
in Jerusalem. So he arranged and I had a buddy,
Adrian Peterson. Different Adrian Peterson, not the broke one that
had a thousand yards rushing with Washington Redskins. Different Adrian Peterson,
um third all time leading scored at Oklahoma State History.
Who was playing with me in Ranana, which is a
suburb of Tel Aviv. And so Charlie said, hey, why
(01:29:03):
don't you come up. There's a great tour guide, great
and it'll take us to all the Christian sites and
we'll go on the like Jesus Walk where Jesus walked
with the cross on his back. If you're a Christian,
you know what I'm talking about. If I mess up
some a word or whatever, sorry, I didn't go to
church and when the temple was a good we didn't
didn't things, we didn't study. So we went and we
(01:29:25):
did see the Western Whaling Wall and some of the
sites that I had seen but others had not seen.
And we go on Jesus walk and then like you're
gonna go into the like the cave where he died.
Imagine if you're on that walk and all of a
sudden goes, hey, I know you're set to pay me
(01:29:47):
here a certain amount, and you're gonna tip me, but
I need hundred fifty dollars right now, we can't. I
can't show you that lad all right, like you would
think that's the worst con of all time. You agreed
to a price, you're gonna tip him above that price,
that's his bonus. And then all of a sudden, right
before you get to the crescendo, now you want nonna
hold on, I could show you where Jesus actually died.
(01:30:10):
We've done all the walk stops, but we're gonna stop now.
How furious would you be? That's the cowboys. That's the cowboys.
So look, he's If the cowboys want to draw a
hard and fast line, if they really want to be jerks,
then go hey, dude, we got you under contract this year.
You gotta play six games. We got your inner contract
(01:30:30):
next year, got play six games. And then oh yeah,
by the way, if we want to, we can franchise
tag you for not one not too but three years. Sorry,
nothing you can do so the good will that anyone
should show their team. And the Dallas Cowboys aren't gonna
(01:30:50):
kill zekiell It much like the l A Rams are
gonna kill Todd Gurley. He's not even gonna play in
the preseason. This idea I could play. You gotta train
some gotta train something with the team. And oh yeah,
by the way, I'm not sure if you're aware of
Dallas Cowboys have a new play caller this year. That's
a big thing. But I actually Jerry Jones is actually
(01:31:12):
speaking sensical, which means that Steve and his son got
to him and said, hey, it's great. We can love
Zeke all we want, but if we want to win,
we need Zeke. We need Tyrnn Smith, we need the
rest of the offensive line, we need Dak we need
to Mariy Cooper, and we need all I know. Yeah,
by the way, then we gotta have a defense. Because
Tony Romo had the league's leading rush or he didn't
(01:31:34):
win anything. Tony Romo is great, you didn't win anything.
They had Dez Bryant, they had Jason Witten and his prime.
They didn't win anything. You know why I never had
top ten defense. Now you have a top ten even
you gotta keep Jail and Smith, you got all these
other people. You gotta keep happy. You gotta pay him
about reasonable rate. And yet ZEKEI Elliott is off to
(01:31:54):
Cabo fresh out of the Principal's office of the Commissioner
of the National Football Lege. So I look at it,
and I think that Zeke is pulling at the heartstrings
of Jerry Jones, who's always wanted, wanted to compensate and
even overcompensate his top players. And I think he's working
(01:32:20):
against the narrative that he's a he's a pain. He's
working against the narrative that running backs aren't nearly as
valuable in the grand scheme of things as he used
to be. And oh yeah, by the way, he's playing
on people's belief that contracts in the NFL aren't fully guaranteed.
When his rookie contract is fully guaranteed, he will get
(01:32:42):
every penny that he's out. And if he doesn't and
they choose to cut him, guess what, He'd get a
new contract elsewhere. Because he's valuable. No one is arguing
his value. It's is this the right time to ask
for a new contract when the team has other guys
whose contract time is up and my answer is no.
(01:33:03):
And Jerry Jones it sounds like his answer is no
as well. We'll see how firm a no that is
because I believe Steven Jones is running this thing, and
that's why they've been able to manage their rosters so
much better in the past couple of years. Alright, sometimes
some some things are synonymous with losing or underachieving. When
(01:33:23):
you say Clippers, it does not bring winning to your brain, right,
you know what I think Clippers winners. You don't think titles.
There are no banners, no retired jerseys. There's really no
signage at all that represents the Clippers in their home arena.
The Clippers obviously aimed to change that with their personnel.
(01:33:43):
Wait to hear how else they might change that. Find
out next. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk
lineup in the nation. Catch all of our shows at
Fox sports Radio dot com and within the I Heart
Radio app. Search f s R to listen live Doug
Gottlips show here on Fox Sports Radio. So if you've
(01:34:05):
been following this Clippers thing, it's kind of interesting and
I know I know. Look, most of you don't live
in southern California. You don't care. You're like Clippers. It's
so long way far away from them playing. It is
interesting though, right like a perennial loser, perennial lapping Stock
are now the favorites to win the NBA Championship, like
(01:34:26):
what they have been, the third tenant in their own building.
Steve Balmber, their own owner, came out and said, the
new arena is a way to define us with our
own identity. Then we play in the Lakers building, we'd
like to play in the Clippers building. That's what we're
working on. So here's the problem. So that now the
(01:34:48):
Clippers are and Steve Balmber has said he's open to
the idea of changing the Clippers nickname because that'll change
things altogether. Right, just change the nickname. Then it's like poof,
it didn't happen. Didn't happen. And it's not like the
you know, you're not leaving a city. It's not like
when the SuperSonics left and to leave the name behind
(01:35:11):
and then the Thunder and the SuperSonics did have one
NBA Championship, they had NBA Finals as well to their name, like,
you're leaving the Clippers, and the Clippers legacy is I
don't know. You have ruined Bill Walton's foot. You moved
from San Diego. You couldn't win forever, You played the
worst arena forever. Then you got a decent arena, you
got to the got a bunch of hype, you're a
(01:35:31):
lobs city. You got to the second round and that's it.
Come put, and then you got this new team. I
actually believe changing the Clippers nickname would be a mistake,
will be a mistake, be a mistake. The past, the
negative is what makes the new story the good one.
(01:35:54):
Otherwise you just any other team that went out and
signed too great free agents and made yourself into a
super team. Anybody can do that. What makes the story
unbelievable is the Clippers, of the third tenant in their
own building, could now be the better franchise, the better team.
They're fighting history. This is a true story when I
(01:36:14):
was a senior high school. This is uh fall of
ninety four before when I graduated growing up in South Cota, California.
The stug Otlip Show, Fox Sports Training Alive Here from
RAMS Training Camp, RAMS Training Campus on the campus of
u C Irvine. U Crvine is the southern part southern
tip of the city of Irvine, which is right in
(01:36:35):
the heart of Orange County. I grew up fifteen minutes
from here. Um. One night, for somebody's birthday, we did
a scavenger hunt and it was a one item scavenger hunt.
Could anybody go find a Clipper shirt, hat or sweatshirt.
If you bring it back, you won the scaveng drive
and nobody went. True story and the Clippers are actually decent.
(01:36:58):
Back then in the early nineties. That was Larry Brown.
They got to the first round the playoffs and lost.
They actually played in the playoffs in Anaheim because the
Riots in Los Angeles. The point is that the the struggle,
it's what makes the success great. And this whole idea
(01:37:18):
of well, you know, we just changed nicknames, then all
that past stuff didn't happen. Like No, you were owned
by a bad owner, You did play in a dump
You were the laughing stock of the NBA. Everyone you
drafted was either bad or got hurt. That was the
Clipper curse. Danny Ferry got hurt, Danny Manning got hurt,
at ve Blake Griffin got hurt, and they missed the
rookie season. They drafted other dudes. They just stunk Michael
(01:37:41):
Olawa Conde right number one overall, Like these all real
stories that really happened. You know, just change your nickname.
They'll just run from your past. You're not Don Draper.
That just takes on somebody else's identity. Like no, no,
that's what makes it great. That's what makes the Browns
(01:38:02):
story so special. Right, the Browns gave up the drive,
then the Browns had the fumble. The Browns has been
the laughing stock of the league. They won one game,
you know, one game two years ago. In two years
and when one game combined and now a year removed
from a one win season, two years removed from a
no win season. There are many people's favorite to win
(01:38:22):
the Super Bowl. That what makes it great. And the
Browns have, by all accounts, terrible colors. No one would
ever start a team today, goes, what do you guys
think about brown and orange? Huh huh? And look I
like orange, orange my dad's favorite color. I grew up
in the city of Orange in Orange County. I played
(01:38:42):
for Oklahoma State and we wore orange. My mom with
the Syracuse they're the Orange. I like orange, but orange
and brown. No one would ever go like that's a winner,
I ever, but it's what makes what makes it all work.
So I I full league. Get The Clippers are trying
to shed their past image. But the best way to
(01:39:06):
do so just win games. Just win games. The Rams
were a joke two years ago. The fired ste fired
Jeff Fisher, they hired Sean McVeigh. They got better players,
Jared Golf got better and they won the NFC last year.
That usually does the trick. The Chargers practice two miles
(01:39:30):
from here, and the Chargers have been famous since moving
from San Diego to Los Angeles of having a home
field disadvantage. And if you've been to Chargers practice so far,
it is packed. It is a zoo. It is can't
miss TV. You know why because they won more games
than anybody in the a f C last year. Because
(01:39:52):
they got Rivers back and Keenan Allen back and Hunter
Henry actually is playing this year. They got Joey Bosa
and mel of An Ingram. Yeah, they got squad. And
if you win, they show up. It's not if you
build it, it's if you win, they show up. Let's
get to Isaac Loencron find out what else going on
(01:40:12):
the world sports Doug Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones did
an interview today with kat VT Television out of the Metroplex,
and here was his latest reaction to the Ezekiel Elliot
hold out. You don't have to have a rushing champion
to win a Super Bowl, but Emmett was the first
one to do it, and that's one of the dilemmas
(01:40:34):
at running back. You can win super Bowls and not
have the Emmett Smith back there are not held Zeke
back there. Consequently, when we are looking and putting Zeke's
contract in place, we've got to realize that the ultimate
goal is to win the Super Bowl, and so you've
got to do all of the things along with having
(01:40:56):
Zeke that allow you to have other players so that
you can win the Super Book. Meanwhile, k r l
D Radio in Dallas reports that Elliott is preparing to
fly from the Dallas area to Cabbo, Son Lucas to
continue his training while the dispute with the Cowboys has
worked out. Elliott trained in Cabbo back in seen while
serving a six game suspension. In a related story, if
(01:41:19):
Fox Sports Radio needs someone to cover this particular chapter
of the Elliot hold out being the team player that
I am. I hereby volunteer elsewhere, the Miami Dolphins fired
offensive line coach Pat Flaherty, promoting analyst David Dave Googlielmo
to offensive line coaching, and rap report reports that Flaherty
(01:41:39):
struggled to implement the new system of new head coach
Brian Flores, and it's been an issue even since the spring.
That's right. He's a character, let me tell you. And
he was the offensive line coach for the Patriots when
they won Super Bowl forty nine against the Seahawks, and
Brian Flowers was a defensive assistant on the Patriots staff,
(01:42:02):
so they know each other quite well. Baseball Jeff pass
And reports that the Mets have traded picture Jason Vargas
to the Phillies in exchange for double A catcher Austin Bossard,
and the Milwaukee Brewers acquired picture Jordan Lyles from the
Pittsburgh Pirates for right hander at Cody Ponds back to
Doug Godley. But live from the training camp with the
NFC champion Los Angeles rams at you see Irvine in

We know a roof can withstand a lot. One exception
being an airborne car. I've seen it, covered it. Dr Farmers,
we are Farmers underwritten my Farmers Truck Fire Insurance exchanges
and affiliates products not available in every state. Doug Gottlib
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah, I mean, look,
(01:42:45):
Pat Flaherty who was fired. I mean part of the
deal was he didn't didn't have the Patriot connection. The
Patriots fired Dave Gugliamo after they lost in the Super
Bowl to the um What are they lost in the
super Bowl? They lost in the see champions again, I
think to the Broncos. Right anyway, I mean like, look,
you know, Patriot guys, higher Patriot guys. That's generally the
(01:43:07):
way it works. Let's get you up down on all
the other stories to day and get to the press,
the press, alright, what he got? Thoughtful tweet dug by
New York Jets running back Levy on Bell A short
time ago, he tweeted, this is long overdue, but I
(01:43:28):
want to take a moment to apologize to all the
fantasy owners who picked me last year. I'm sorry. I
couldn't pull through for y'all. But trust me, this year
is about to be way different. I'm bringing the trophy
emoji trophy emoji this year. Unquote. M hmmm, who wrote that?
(01:43:51):
Levyan bell I just realized, you know how badly he
screwed not only the Steelers but everyone who drafted him
for their fantasy teams lst year. So at least he apologizes.
But he didn't apologize to Tea his teammates from last year. Right,
maybe that's force coming. Maybe that tweet is saved in
his draft and he lost it or something. Anybody I'll
(01:44:11):
see the issue with that, right, Like you think about
that for a second. He would That's amazing to me.
That's a great point. Actually, I'm gonna I'm gonna look
at the comments section here and see if uh and
see if other people are pointing that out, because that
is a really really good point elsewhere the den women.
(01:44:34):
I'm gonna apologize to fantasy owners, but not to the
pits my my. Forget about the rest of the team.
The offensive lineman who he apparently told he would show
up first week of the season, he didn't show up,
and then they're like half that dude. Now you know
why they were like yef that dude. Yeah, I'm looking
at the comments right now, and it's a smorgus board
(01:44:56):
because for every maybe you should apologize to Steelers fan
to comment, there's a no worries, big fella, go ball
out comment. And also let's see the apology I needed
to forgive. You gave up four players for you to
join the squad. But it's all good. Hashtag jet up.
All sorts of reactions out there to this tweet by
(01:45:17):
lap On Bell elsewhere, the Denver Broncos released their first
depth chart of the spring. Joe Flacco the starter, Kevin
Hogan the backup quarterback, and its rookie Drew Lock, who
was presently the third string quarterback. So there's a quarterback
battle for the third string or the for the second string,
you would think the backup. But obviously they're at least
(01:45:39):
right now in the preseason bringing Drew Lock along slowly. Yeah,
I mean that that must mean they're a little disappointed
where Drew Lock is correct, that that would be there,
that would be the read you could read it that way.
Perhaps absolutely, Kevin Hogan has I think he started a
game or two with the Browns. But like you drafted
Drew Lock, he was He's a spectacular all around athlete.
(01:46:02):
I don't know. My thing is, Look, I think Flacco.
They're going crazy about how good Flacco has been. I
actually think Flac will be really good for them. I
think that was a good signing. Meanwhile, speaking of the
Cleveland Browns, and you were alluding to their identity earlier,
Brown's owner d Haslem spoke to the media yesterday because
the Browns are gonna be changing their uniforms for the
(01:46:24):
twenty season, so for next they just changed the uniform
for this season pretty much the last couple of years,
and I really liked the way they are right now.
So Dee Haslem said when she spoke to the media
yesterday that they would not be changing their iconic helmets. However,
the uniforms will be changing. But I really like their
uniforms the way they are right now. I say, if
(01:46:46):
it ain't broke, don't fix it. Well, the goodness is
the Charges are finally figured out that powder blue is
the way to go. UM. I actually liked the Rams
doing the old school yellow and blue or the blue
the white. UM. I felt like the Browns that kind
of figured it out with their uniforms. So and that's
(01:47:07):
the press, get out there and pressed. That was the press.
All right, let's let's welcome in. He's a general manager
of the defending NFC champion. He's less need, he joins us.
Yere live at RAMS training camp in Irvine, California. U
see I less, how are you? I'm good? I was
just coming over. We you know, we because of Todd
Gurley's Nie situation, we resigned Steven Jackson in case we
(01:47:31):
needed some. Ultimately, that was just a joke. Home probably
got national, It's gonna get headlines. Ultimately, we wanted to
allow Stephen to sign and be a RAM four days
so that he could retire and be a Ram forever
since he's the all time leading rusher and our franchise history.
And they're like, it's it's interesting. Like I think to
the layman out there, they might go like, oh yeah,
(01:47:51):
Stephen Jackson was awesome. Like Jerome Bettis was a Ram. Uh,
he was amazing. Eric Dickerson was amazing when he was
a RAM. I had the two thousand yards season. Marshall
Falk was a Ram. Like you go back like Justin's
you're all time Russian. That actually idea that surprises me.
I had I won't. I mean obviously with this we
uh artists. R PR person was showing me that list,
(01:48:14):
and you go down that list and there's there's definitely
some legends you know, own that list. I have not
seen Steven Jackson's he around. Does he still look like
he's wearing the Batman suit? You know? But he that
dude was the most physically imposing back It's interesting he
is probably a twenty pound leaner Steven. But I think
the thing that is most noticeable is he now has
(01:48:35):
a very very short haircut, so he looks like an
IBM executive instead of that you know hulk that was
coming out of the the tunnel back in the day. Okay,
let's need joining us on the dug gotl PEO. You
brought up Todd Gurley. Um, let's go back to last year,
this time when he didn't have to he wasn't he
(01:48:56):
wasn't holding out. You gave him a contract extension a
year before you had to do What was the what
was the logic in doing that? Because it caught some
in the league by surprise. Well, ultimately, uh, you know,
let's say where he's at now right since he been drafted. Uh,
he has more yards from scrimmage than any human in
that time frame. He's about six yards more than Julio Jones.
(01:49:18):
He's got more tds than anybody in that time frame.
So ultimately, he's a pillar in our locker room. Locker
rooms are made of humans. And guess what, you you
hear it all the time wherever, right, it's the people
that make a difference in and ultimately sometimes in sports,
right with the analytics and all of that, it's almost
like players or commodities ultimately their people, their leaders. In
(01:49:42):
our locker room, that human being deserved to be one
of the more you know, well paid runners in the league.
And that's what we did. Okay, So Jerry Jones is
sitting there sending you Christmas cartage, right because now Ezekieliots
sitting there going like, hey, I'm in the same spot
as he was in why don't you reward me? Was
there is there any thought into what it does to
the dynamic of other star players in your own locker
(01:50:02):
room or the rest of the league, in that you
gave him a deal a year before most people. Every
time there is a deal done Uh, let's call it
the market resets, and and that's based on what guarantees
average per year when you resign, in terms of how
many years he's been in things like that. So each
time a player is rewarded for uh, you know, let's
(01:50:26):
call his earned success, it does reset the market and
we all have to react to that. But ultimately what
we like to do is somewhat proact to that instead
of reacting and try to definitely reward our pillars. I'm
wondering how what you know you're able to now sit
back over the past couple months and I know you're
(01:50:47):
doing your job and getting your your ninety man ready,
you know, getting ready to cut down. Of course, you
had your draft picks as well, but there's been various
reactions to what you guys decided to do and how
it played out. I would deem, as a neutral bystander,
as an incredible success story. Right, but you guys went
all in. You took guys in one year contracts, You
made some risky moves, you bring it in Dominican sue,
(01:51:09):
and even though you didn't win the Super Bowl, you
won the NFC And to consider where you were the
year before losing a home to the Falcons or two
years before that when you had to make a coaching change.
That's an incredible win. But from your perspective, how do
you as of right now, how would you feel like
last year's moves, as risky as they were played out? Well,
I think ultimately the two thousand and eighteen season, when
(01:51:33):
you're a conference champion, it was a successful season. The
good thing about those moves is the majority of those
players that we acquired are still on the roster. Uh
and really and Dominican being the more one year player,
but we traded for a key to leave and he
(01:51:53):
is still here. We traded for Marcus Peters, he is
still We ultimately traded for Dante He's still here. We
traded for Brandon Cooks, He's still here. So the plan
last year wasn't just really a one hit type wonder
type year. Those guys were gonna still be around. The
key from last year's is we know what we're capable of,
(01:52:14):
but it's no longer a vision. But when you sit
in that seat, the best thing you can do, and
what we've been doing since let's call it that super Bowl,
is what are what are we not capable of? And
how do we improve those things. It's easy to know
what you are. Okay, So so tell me your self,
scout in what you were missing for that one game,
(01:52:34):
and your your self, Scout in the what weren't you
that you need to be in order to win one
more game? Well, we we have and it's not a
joking manner, but we've kind of joked internally. Did I
don't think any of us are smart enough to figure
out what could we have done different to to let's
call it, take a three three game deep into the
fourth quarter and actually win that thing, right, Yeah, I
(01:52:55):
don't think there's any moves you can do this year
to go, Okay, we'll win the we'll win the last
eight into the super Bowl next year. So I think
from there's some big things and I'll keep that inside
of what we're trying to do, uh, in terms of roster,
in terms of offensive defensive schemes, in terms of other
processes in sports science, to go, you know what, Let's
(01:53:15):
make sure we continuously improve the ramp. Let's make sure
the nineteen rams are better than the eighteen rams. Not
necessarily looking at we gotta win fourteen games now instead
of thirteen or anything like that. It's just from a
down the down basis, how can we be better in
nineteen than we were in eight? Um, this is gonna
be a challenging preseason for you because you're only here
(01:53:35):
for a couple of weeks. Then you go to Napa
and got a couple of scrimmages with the Raiders, and
then you go you got that trip to Hawaii, which
is a short trip, and like, look, you know how
coaches get They're like, wait, we gotta we started here
and you had this two years ago right where you
had where Jeff Fisher, you guys had just out here
and you're moving and that that can that can rattle
(01:53:56):
some some cages and make it more difficult to evaluate.
You wore your health. And as as Sean told us,
you know, he's always been a guy who is not
as focused on the preseason for the younger player, for
the older players. Is the younger players, what about the
challenges of all that movement in a short period of
time before you ever play your first and then we
we gotta go to London. What I do like big
(01:54:16):
picture overall, what I love about Sean is he's all
about and we always say in our billing right. The
main thing is the main thing. The main things improving
rounds football, uh football. So ultimately he's trying to once
we get to hear, it's all about how do we
get better today? Then we mean better, more, better today
and yesterday. Right. But the nice thing about the rows
(01:54:37):
of those thorns is the monotony of training camp can
be cut down because Okay, we're here and we do
a couple of scrimmers against Chargers. Then we get to
go to the Raiders and we do a couple against them,
and then you know, Hawaii, you get to do that.
So the monotony is cut down, but there's still a
thorn of maybe more travel. All right, you guys want
to ask you back quickly to older players. Eric Wettell,
(01:54:58):
who I thought he might walk away from the game.
He's like a football savant in terms of ability to
get guys lined up. But they're always questions on a
defensive backup position of such incredible athleticism, can he still run?
What was the thought? Because he wasn't on the market
long before you scooped him up. Take me through the
thought process of Eric Weddles available. Let's get him and
(01:55:19):
make him kind of the centerpiece at the back end
of our It is interesting. You probably started in one
of our travels last year where we traveled across the country.
We're gonna have to do it anyway against the Ravens,
and we were practicing against those guys. But Sean felt
I caught the central nervous system of Eric Weddle. He
could feel his knack, his instincts, his preparations showing up
(01:55:42):
in the angles, and the geometry took take forty times.
He's probably slower forty now than he was when he
came out whatever that was coming out of Utah. Ultimately
he might have got from point A to point be
faster based on all of those Uh. I call it
instant I call it central nervous system working together. So
that that kind of started his resume. For Shawn probably
started spawn against each other in some seven on seven
(01:56:05):
about a year ago today. And no no doubt about.
Of course you got Clay as well, and you've got
still got Andrew Whitworth in the offense. I got those
old heads to get the young heads young guys lined out. Uh,
listen less congrats on what was an amazing season last year.
Best of luck and continue health to your entire club,
because that's the big thing with training camp. That's that's
the most luck we need, right if if everybody's healthy,
(01:56:25):
wrap those guys in bubble rap. Thanks so much for
letting us be out here. Appreciate that. Thanks for having me.

little trainee camp nugget. You remember the scissors lists lifts?
I remember the scissors lift. In the past, would always
be a film guy up there. Um. Nowadays they don't
(01:57:08):
use drones. Now they have like these cool new contraptions
where it's like a tower that goes up and it's
got the cameras already on them, but they're mechanically operated,
so uh, I guess no more scissor lifts anywhere they're done.
You're a scissor lift owner that's rented those out for years.
I guess it still works for high school, but no

longer for the big boys of pro or college football.
