you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Hey, it's Doug Gottlieb.

tearing his A c L could be bad news for
the Nets and Kevin Durant plus and for all. Network

on the development of some young quarterbacks in the league.

how much they really do affect their team. Zeke still
sitting out, Melvin Gordon still sitting out. Charles Robinson will
join us from Yahoo Sports as well. He's our NFL insider.
So we got a lot to get to debuting a
new segment called wim Bet, which means I bet we

(01:31):
pick out a line that we see for today, for tonight,
for this week, for this weekend, or maybe in the
future that we really really like, and we'll track them
I'll bet. Upcoming in the Doug Gottlieb Show, let me
start with the news of the day and the reason
why it's buyer beware. In Brooklyn, Boogie Cousins went down
today with a torn a c l Marcus Cousins, former

(01:55):
All Star who last year, this time, everybody accept this,
I right here, Everyone except this guy said, just hand
the Warriors the trophy. And I said, look, even if
Boogie's healthy, they've never played with a center latent games.
He's a defensive liability, he's never played in playoff games.
And oh yeah, by the way, he's coming back from

(02:16):
a debilitating injury, which people just assume he'll be fine.
He wasn't fine. He was a bad defensive player. He
did kind of screw him up. He helped him in
one game in the NBA Finals, but overall, I would
say he's as much minus as he was plus during
his one year with the Warriors, mostly because of injury.

(02:38):
So today he goes down with the torn a c
L which I'm not happy for DeMarcus Cousins. I think
he's a guy who's really matured during his time in
the NBA. Hey, I'm not pleased as punch for DeMarcus Cousins.
But and this is a big butt, but DeMarcus Cousins

(03:03):
is buyer beware. And it also happened in a private workout.
How many times have you heard these guys go, man,
I don't want to do this Team USA stuff. Too
much of a workload. Guys that have gotten hurt in
Team USA. One Paul George breaking his leg that five
or six years ago, actually probably more than that. That's

(03:26):
one he landed awkwardly and broke his leg because the
stanton was too close to the court. And now you
have a player getting hurt and a torn a c L.
Just doing a private workout doesn't mean he wouldn't torn
his a c L anyway he might have. Also doesn't
mean that that he wouldn't have not gotten hurt because

(03:49):
he would be with a team and his weight would
have been down. There'll be less injuries. But here's why
it's buyer beware. DeMarcus Cousins has now suffered in sequential order,
a torn Achilles tendon, a ruptured quad muscle, and now
a torn a c L. Remember the song when we

(04:11):
were kids. The hip bones connected to the knee bone,
the knee bones connected to these hipbones kicked to the
thigh bone. Thigh bones kicked to the knee bone, knee
bones kicked from the shin bone. Right, remember that it
is all tied together. Ask any kinesiologists because then tight.
Ask any kinesiologist and they'll say, oh, yeah, tory a

(04:32):
c L. Sure. I mean, look, you probably had an imbalance.
That's why you tore your Achilles tendon. Then they fixed
the Achilles tendon, and that's so well put together that
it puts pressure on other parts of your body. That's
where the quad wind and that's why the a c
L went. Kevin Durant was the best player in the
NBA last year, for my money, has been the best
player in the NBA the last three seasons towards achilles tendon,

(04:57):
sitting out hoping to be back. And I believe he
could be the outlier because unlike Bookie Cousins, he's never
carried too much weight, Like he's the kind of guy
that could go pig out at at the Chinese buffet
and not gain a pound. And he is way thin.
But he's broken his foot, he's torn as achilles tendon.

(05:18):
What neck to go? He's had multiple calf injuries as well.
What's next to go? The knee bones connected to the
shin bone, shin bone connected to the You got the story.
Guys don't just get hurt. They have a sudden injury
history when they tear their achilles tendon because they do

(05:39):
such a good job of putting that thing back together.
It's so stiff, so firm, so frankly unbreakable, that everything
else kind of breaks down around it. The buyer beware
is man. You got Kevin Durant he's on the wrong
side of thirty. He's coming off a huge achilles tendon tear.
We don't know if be back to that same form,

(06:01):
And even if he gets back to that same form,
will he be able to stay healthy when so many
others aren't healthy after tearing their achilles tending because everything
else breaks down. So while we can feel uh bummed
for Boogie and wondering what the Lakers do now they've
lost the guy presumed to be their starting center, I

(06:26):
think bigger picture is when guys tear these achilles tending
like the best player in the NBA, just how long
is the road back? And once you make it back
after that long road, are you ever truly healthy again?
Boogie Cousins story, We'll tell you not so much. We

(06:46):
got some Colin Kaepernick stuff for you with jay Z. Now,
suddenly jay Z is supposedly a sellout because Colin Kaepernick
is has been kind of pushed aside, and jay Z,
who once stood by Kaepernick, says he stands by Kaepernick,
but wishes that guys would would protest in a different way.

(07:11):
This is the problem. This is the problem. The most
disorganized revolution in the history of revolutions, it's a movement
without truly a leader, and the guy who could be
the leader is kind of non verbal and hasn't really
shown any sort of desire or ability to show the
world he still wants to play football. You can tell

(07:35):
me that Colin cow Colin Kaepernick working out, flexing his muscles,
showing his tats show and and saying he still wants
to play his playing But dude, if you want to
play in the NFL, you should be posting video every
day of your breaking down film and throwing footballs. You
should be willing to go to any camp anywhere in
any league just because hey, I love football. That that's

(08:01):
the way it actually will work. And while we're criticizing
jay Z, the genius of the NFL, hey go and
get a guy who's beyond repute in regards to keeping
it real, a guy who didn't previously want to be
in business with the NFL. Because at the end of
the day, Republicans, democrats, independence, we're all capitalists, and jay

(08:25):
Z trying to spread his message through with financial gain
as well makes a whole heck of a lot more
sense than Colin Kaepernick, the leaderless leader of a movement
which I'll be honest, it became a movement, like it
became a thing, and we never heard from him again.
So we got some uh, we got some Kaepernick to

(08:46):
get to. Also, an interesting discussion was it Phil Sims
and uh who was the coach? Bill Kauer discussing whether
or not great offenses are because the quarterback or because
the offense coordinator. So we've got a lot still to come,
but we'll get more. NBA with Rick Buker from Bleacher
Report member News of the Day. Boogie Cousins, former All

(09:07):
Star center, was with the Warriors last year, previously that Pelicans,
previously that Sacramento Kings assumed to be out for the year.
Tears his a c l in a private workout in
Las Vegas. And to me, this is a buyer. Be
very very aware that Kevin Durant is coming back off
a tour and achilles tendon and he's already had foot surgery,

(09:29):
a broken foot that didn't heal right and had to
be redone. He's had multiple calf injuries. He's on the
wrong side of thirty. This is what post surgery life
looks like. All right, Coming over next, we'll talk some
football with Daniel Jeremiah. Does he think we'll see Daniel
Daniel Jones this season under center with the Giants by
now next be sure to catch live editions of The

(09:51):
Doug dot Leap Show weekdays in noon eastern three pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio
app Doug Gottli Show. You're on Fox Sports Radio. Well,
there's a lot to get to in the National Football League.
Cowboys still have their contract issues. The Chargers don't have
their running back. Um, you have the Antonio Brown situation.

(10:14):
We've gotten to look at a bunch of different guys. Well,
let's let's bring in Daniel Jeremiah. By the way, last
week he joined us right before the Cardinals were gonna
play the Chargers, and he said, I'll give you analysis
next week. On the one pass that Kyler Murray through
he threw four passes. I blame man or No. Maybe
six passes completed five or forty four yards? DJ, what

(10:35):
do you think of Kyla Murray. He's very he's very
accurate checking the ball down in a preseason game against uh,
pretty simplified defense. Um, there just wasn't a whole lot
to go off of their I mean, you know, he
just took a little flat routes got the ball out.
I mean you can see the the ball definitely jumps
out of his hands. He's he's got a live arm.
But the one play that kind of stood out to

(10:57):
me was they ran a zone read and uh, Derwin
James was down there in the box and and he
took a look there and decided to give it. And
I'm sitting here thinking that might have been his his
first kind of realization. Okay, it's a little different here.
You know, there's not gonna be all that green, green
grass to run around like the Big twelve when you've
got guys like Derwin James sitting there waiting for you

(11:18):
to see if you're gonna pull the ball or not.
So Uh, it's it's gonna be an adjustment. It's gonna
be an adjustment for him. They didn't run any of
the offense they're gonna run in the regular season, Doug.
They're gonna be in ten personnel, which is one back,
four wide receivers. They're gonna go to break neck pace. Uh.
In that game, they played with a tight end. The
entire game. They huddled up. I mean it was it
wasn't anything close to the offense they're gonna run, So

(11:40):
not a lot to take from it. In my opinion.
They don't want to show anything. They're not showing anything. Yeah,
they're not showing it. That's that's not what they're gonna
be doing. Do you think they'll be successful. I think
they're going to move the ball really well between the twenties. Um,
I'm a little bit concerned of how they're gonna be
able to punch it in once we get down inside
the red zone where space disappears, and that's how you

(12:02):
win and lose games. You know. You look at the
Patriots and what they do. They'll let you move between
the twenties all day long, and you're just not gonna
be able to score. So that, to me is my
concern offensively with them. And then the bigger concern for
me is, you know, when you watch them defensively, this
is a team that's going to play against the air
raid every day and they have all of camp and
I look at the way that the teams are built

(12:23):
inside the division and I just left that stadium thinking,
oh man, they're going to get the ball jam down
their throats. Uh, They're not gonna be able to stop it.
That was That was my takeaway and biggest concern with
the teams. What about the Chargers, a team that last
year won twelve games. What's your early impressions. It's a
very deep roster. I mean it is a deep and

(12:44):
talented group that Tom Flesco's put together. And he really
saw it, you know, in the running back room, I
was everybody's looking there with with Melvin Gordon in his
situation and Ekeler and Justin Jackson looked great. Um, you
look at the receiving corps that they're not gonna miss
Tyrone Williams are going to be just fine. They get
Hunter Henry back, They've got waves of linebackers now after
having none last year. Um, you know, Derwin James is

(13:06):
a superstar. They've got both a healthy ingram rolling duos
who can rush the pastor Justin Jones can rush the
pastor Tillary hadn't even played yet for first round pick
um and we know what he's gonna do, be able
to kind of roll through there and create some pass rush.
So the one concern will be the offensive line. Um,
they've got some young tackles that are having a step
up with with Russell Coon his health situation, that would

(13:29):
be the one issue at point too. But it's uh,
it looks like a pretty good group. What are you
hearing on the Ravens and organization used to work for
the Ravens new general manager and apparently new offense. Now
in their preseason game, they chose to let Lamar Jackson
throw it a bunch. But what are early returns on
on Lamar and this Ravens team? All right? Everything? I
talked someone there just the other day said that he's improved,

(13:52):
you know, he's been better, more consistent. I still I
am a little bit skeptical there. I don't think he's
ever going to be you know, a sixty eight seventy
sent past her because he's still gonna have some of
those issues throwing outside the hash. But with the with
the team that they've built to be able to kind
of ground and pound people, and they've added some speed
on the outside. Uh. This Miles Boykin. If you're do

(14:13):
the fantasy football thing and you wanted a sleeper wide receiver,
I think Miles Boykin is gonna make some big plays
for them this year. Um. You know, Hollywood Brown needs
to get healthy. He's not out there right now at
full speed, So that that's the kid I would keep
an eye on. I think they're just gonna they're gonna
run the heck out of the ball, and they're gonna
play really good defense. I think there'll be a playoff team.
I think they'll be nine ten wins playoff team. But
I just don't know if that's gonna work once you

(14:34):
get into the tournament, because you've got to be more
accurate and consistent throwing the football at that point time.
That's the voice of Dannie Jeremiah from the NFL Network.
Moved the Sticks is the podcast You went out and
saw Daniel Jones. You guys did a live broadcast from there.
Now you've seen him play well in a preseason game
again against the twos and threes and maybe even fours.
But he he he, I mean, like this is crazy, right.

(14:56):
He's gone from a guy who got booed lustily to
now of a sudden, it's let's get rid of Eli
and bring him in. Um, what do you think that
like that is even plays this year? I don't think
he will. I mean, if he does play this year,
I think you're probably talking to the back after the season. Um.
But when I was out there, he had not taking
a single rep with the ones, not one. Um, so

(15:19):
it was obviously, Um, they are very comfortable and confident Eli,
who's had a great camp and was throwing the ball well. Um,
so I don't anticipate you're gonna see him unless it
just goes completely south, you know, and they find themselves
that that you know, two and nine or whatever, and
they want to get him out there and get him going.
Maybe that happens, but um, now they're they're all in
with Eli. I think it's probably a good thing for

(15:39):
Daniel Jones, having visited with him throughout the process, you know,
you're talking about the Senior Bowl, the Combine, the Pro Day,
all those times. Having visited with him at training camp,
was the most comfortable I've seen him and just can
kind of exhale and knows that he look, he doesn't
have to play right now. He can just work on
getting better and into his credit. That's what he's done.
Dan Jeremiah join us in the Doug Gottlip Show here

(16:01):
on Fox Sports Radio. We've got to see and see
the Raiders a bunch on um hard knocks and the
Antonio Brown thing, Like is this his rap that not
just the feat and the helmet, but being disinterested and
not paying attention in meetings like this has got to

(16:21):
be all part of the reason that Pittsburgh was willing
to bid to do well. The two things that you
kind of heard from you know, kind of the underworld
I guess of the NFL about Antonio Brown were pretty consistent,
and that number one, he works extremely hard at getting
himself ready to play. He takes care of his body.

(16:41):
He's in phenomenal shape. You know, he's gonna put extra
work in u route running all that stuff off the
charts phenomenal. And the other thing that I had heard
was that, you know, in terms of being dependable and
reliable in other words, being where you're supposed to be
on the field, running your routes at the right depth,
being somebody that's kind of like trustworthy, that that was

(17:02):
that was the concern. And obviously, you know some of
the you know, the emotional stuff not not being you know,
consistent in that area. So those are the things that
you've heard for years there and forever. He's been so
damn good that you'd be willing to put up with
some of that instability because of what he could do.
But man, it's uh, you know, I guess that's not
totally surprising based on what we've seen here. No, no,

(17:25):
but even this, these are some storylines we did not
expect to see. How do you think the Cowboys ultimately
do it with the salaries? I think it'll be uh.
I think they'll get them all done. I think they'll
get all three of those guys done within the next year,
and they'll have to they'll have to pay the piper
here in a couple of years. I just I just
don't see Jerry Jones, you know, sitting down and saying, Okay,

(17:47):
this is going to impact our cap, you know, three
years from now, and this is probably not the smartest
long term decision. Um, you know. I just I don't
think he's gonna think like that. I think he's gonna say,
let's get all these guys were rocking and roll in
this year, so we can go chase the Super Bowl
this year and next year. And they'll they'll pay the
piper and deal with that down the road, which will
end up probably costing him some of these young defensive

(18:07):
players they won't be able to resign. But I just
don't see them taking the long view of the situation,
I just don't see that. Yeah, I don't either, But
they should, right, I mean they should. That's a different conversation.
I mean, that's a totally different conversation. I just don't.
I think when you look at president and you look
at where they are and how the team's built, I
just I don't see that happening. How much would you

(18:27):
be willing to give Eze Killett, Well, you know, it's
his thing. Is difficult because I could make the football
argument based off how you know his game. Um, I
think he'll be able to hold up physically. I'm okay
with that. If you were to sign him and give
him that money, I think the offense runs through him.
I could make a case for him more than any

(18:48):
of these other running backs that I'd be okay with
paying him. The problem is, you've got a factor in
the off the field stuff, so you know, not being
there and knowing him as well as they would inside
the building, it's hard for me to answer that. I
can make the football case. Okay, you can make him
the top paid running back. This offense is more dependent
on the running back than any other, and I think

(19:08):
he'll be okay physically for the next three or four
years to make it work it but if the guy
is suspended and has other issues off the field, you
can't do it. So they have to make that decision.
They have more answers than we do, but that would
be my concern. What's your level of concern with Andrew
lux health? Extremely high. I was just talking to somebody
from another team today. It was just like, man, it's

(19:29):
so cryptic and so bizarre. Um, it's it's a little
bit of deja vu, you know, on this, on this situation,
he's I just hope, Doug. He's the highest grade I've
ever given to a quarterback coming to the draft. I
hope we don't look back on the career and go, man, this,
you know, this is one of those what could have
been players? You know. I hope that's not the case.

(19:50):
And you know, so afficially, Chargers play Week one, so
I'm hoping he's out there so I can see a
great football game and the charge of hopening he is
not even though quality back up, so that they can, uh,
they can get a soft start as opposed to you know,
last year and they started with the Chiefs at home.
You'd like, you got a playoff team at home, you'd
like to get a win. If they don't have to
starting quarterback, you're much more likely. Yeah, I think Tom,

(20:13):
maybe Tom tele Esco would disagree with me on that,
but you know, hey, if you're gonna sit up there
and watch a football game, I want all the stars
will be out there. It's more fun. Uh not allow
to talk about the Rams. You saw that Ram scrimmage
right with with the Chargers, I'm wondering, like, for the
team that's defending NFC champions, for a quarterback that continues
to grow and evolve and come into his own, assuming

(20:34):
Todd Gurley is back healthy, are we are we doing
the Rams and this service not talking about them more? Well?
I think they like that. You know, it's usually you've
got to deal with all the hype um, and I
think that, you know, teams like Cleveland has kind of
taken all the hype and taking it all on them.
I think the Rams are are just fine with that.
Some other teams around only getting all this attention, but
they are still still I mean, a premier, premier team

(20:57):
that can rush the quarterback. Um, they can get good
quarterback play. I'm not saying Golf's the Hall of Famer, Doug,
but man, like God leave the guys played pretty darn good, um,
and they go to a super Bowl and it feels
like he's he's talked about like he was some fifth
round pick. Um. So I don't totally understand that. I
just know I think they're the favorite in that division.

(21:18):
And when I look around the NFC to me, to me,
it's them and the Eagles. I think that's what those
are the teams. You got the Saints right there as well,
but I think they're right up there at the top
if you had a crystal ball. What do you think,
like Tom Brady is doing next year? I don't know how.
I don't know. I can't doubt the guy. I'll say
that he's going to continue, obviously continue to play the

(21:40):
contract situation. I'm gonna say they find a way to
continue to work through that. It was fascinating what he
just did with this deal. But I don't see him
leaving there. So for people who don't people don't understand
the details of it, what did he actually do so
he can't you know, they can't franchise taging if I
if I read it correctly, so he'd be he'd be
free to walk. I just can't see, after all that

(22:01):
he's built up with one organization, um, that he would
want to go play somewhere else for the you know,
the last couple of years of his career. But he
gave himself that option. UM, so I'm sure that's it's
on the table. The Patriots, I mean less Jared Stidham
is uh is someone they feel like ready to take
the reins and go. I can't see how the Patriots
that ever let that happen. Give me the team, Give

(22:22):
me another team that every last year week I think
you gave me the Niners. Give me the other team
that's good that people aren't talking about because we pay
attention to the Browns and the Cowboys and to some
of the and the Patriots and the Jets. Yeah, I
mean there's a couple of different ones I could go with,
you know, when I when I look around the league, Doug, though,
I'm still I'm still riding with the With the Niners,

(22:42):
you get the quarterback healthy. But the other team that
I would that I would keep an eye on. Um,
it's a team that every year we we talked about
being Super Bowl contenders, and this year you've heard nothing
about him. And that's the Pittsburgh Steelers. Uh that that
that team, that defense is going to be really good. Uh, Roethlisberger,
I think it is a little bit of a should
buy subtraction. I think that's fair takeaway. Um, all the

(23:03):
distraction with with Bell and with with with Antonio Brown,
and now you're seeing, what do you know, young receivers emerge,
something that Pittsburgh Steelers have always had. They're gonna be
just fine. So it's weird that nobody talks about the
Steelers this time of year. Great stuff is always Daniel
Jeremiah Check Got to Move the Sticks podcast, watch him
on the NFL Network, or listen to him call the

(23:25):
l A Chargers game on our local radio affiliate DJ.
Thanks so much, dude, Thank you. Be sure to catch
live editions of the Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at
noon Eastern three pm Pacific. Doug Got Leap Show rolls on.
You're on Fox Sports Radio. All right, little debut is
something we're gonna do daily. You know, like weed, it's
starting to get legal everywhere. Betting. I'm talking about betting. Now.

(23:49):
We were not gonna sign for twenty. We're not gonna
like smoke, what have you got on? No, we're gonna
try to make you some money. Every day. We're gonna
play a game called oh Yeah, do you want to bet? So?

(24:12):
I gotta bet for you. You can go and get
lines for a Week one of the National Football League. Right. So,
if you if you look at the Chargers, here's a
team that won twelve games last year. They did so
they didn't have Joey Bosa for like half the season.

(24:33):
Derwin James was just a rookie. Melvin Gordon was heard
at times last year, albeit he's currently not in camp.
I could make the case they've upgraded at linebacker and
everywhere except for maybe left tackle. We're right now they're
trying to manage that they were a better road team
than they were home team. But think about this for

(24:54):
a second, Chargers at home. Philip rivers. He'll be healthy
week one of the season. Mike Williams, Keenan Allen. I
think they're gonna they're gonna hold firm on Melvin Gordon.
I think Melvin Gordon will show up. But even he
doesn't for one game, it doesn't matter. And the defense
is super super talented with maybe the best rush end
tannem in the National Football League. I like what Chris

(25:17):
Ballard has done with with the Colts. I really do
they won? How many games they win last year? Ten?
Ten games last year? Okay, haven't seen Andrew Luck in
alive practice. A lot of questions about whether or not
he'll play earlier in the season. No chance he's sharp,
not having seen enough live reps. And oh yeah, by
the way, it's a three point line, which means in

(25:39):
a neutral field to be a pick them. I don't
see this game as a pick them. The Chargers are
that good. The Chargers are that talented. The way to
beat the Chargers is, but what the what the Patriots did?
Line up two tight ends and mash them. That's not
what they're gonna do. Chargers minus three, Week one of
the season. It's an easy bet. If you don't believe me,

(26:03):
I'll bet. Oh really, you want to bet? Actually, we
just created that segment so that we could hear the
O Jason and uh and that that bed. That backgrounds
pretty good, right, It's not bad. Ryan music is so young.
He's like, I've never heard this song before, Like you

(26:23):
heard the song I have heard that song only once though,
and it was today before the show. So there you go.
That's what I mean. Unsigned NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick. I'm
reading this from Jason Reid's column, and the Undefeated might
as well have been seated next to uh NFL Commissioner
Roger Gerdal during Wednesday's news conference when they officially announced
the partnership with Jay Z. The former Niners quarterback was

(26:47):
definitely in the room. Although Goodell and Carter both faced
a volley of questions about Kaepernick, who became a polarizing
figure nationally after protesting police brutality and systematic oppression before games,
Carter was repeatedly us to explain his reasoning for partnering
with the National Football League while Kaepernick, whom he has
strongly supported, has not been in a roster since the

(27:07):
end of the two thousand sixteen season. Several of those
questioners echoed the sentiments of many on social media who
expressed disappointment and anger that Carter would agree to have
his company Rock Nation lead the NFL's endeavors in music
and entertainment. Quote, we forget the whole column thing was
to bring attention to social injustice in this that case,

(27:28):
this was a success. This is the next phase. There
are two parts of protesting. You go outside and you protest,
and then the company or individual says, I hear you,
what do we do next? Thank you? And we're done here,
Like you just want to keep you know, like there's

(27:49):
no what are we protesting for? You know? What? Do
we want? Jobs? When you want them? Now? Right, there's
the now. So this is kind of the point, Like
you brought attention to something that you believed exists, police brutality.

(28:10):
I think you can make the case for that. Obviously
you've got strong social media support. Um, if you wanted
to tell me that oppression still takes place, you know,
systematic oppression, I would have we could have a very
good debate on very good debate, right, because there's people
of color. You know, the demographic the nationality that makes

(28:34):
the most money United States is actually Asian people per capita.
They come from a different country. There are people of color.
Why is that? You know? But let's not get into
some debate about systematic depression and police brutality. I think everyone,
even police officers, are against police brutality. It's just what
are we actually seeing? And I don't know. I come

(28:56):
to this and I said, like, this is why Colin
Kaepernick was the wrong guy. He's still considered the leader
of a movement, yet no one's ever heard him say
a word. Remember that great speech he had the March
on Washington where he pointed out police. Nope, Remember that
time that he had people by ads during an NFL
game so that by air time, so that he now

(29:18):
they had the Nike commercial, the Nike commercial. For the
Nike commercial is a standing up for your beliefs. Okay,
we hear you. Does anyone not know that there is
a a strong feeling, especially from black people in this country,
that there is systematic oppression and police brutality towards African

(29:39):
Americans and people of color. Does anybody not know that?
They may not know that that exists, that feeling. Of
course you do, Okay, So what's the next step? And
that's what jay Z is sitting there going like, well,
you're not really doing anything. Well, he's not in the league, okay.

(30:00):
He sued the league and one and then disappeared. Doesn't
want to play in any of these other minor leagues
that are popping up. Hasn't made himself like why not
do the William Mays Hayes and just show up? Yeah,
do you want to show up and make a team
or do you want to do you know a viral
post of you lifting weights and showing that you're still

(30:22):
in shape because you're not old and you're a great athlete.
We knew you'd be in shape. It would be a
story if it was otherwise. But jay Z makes a
great point, which is like, look, the whole idea was
to bring attention to social injustice. You did that, You succeeded,
whether you liked or disliked the protest. The protest was

(30:43):
designed specifically to bring attention to something that we have
now all completely talked about for the last three years
except one guy, the guy who started the movement. So
Eric Reed can be as mad as he wants, the
black community can be as mad as they want and

(31:05):
say jay Z is a sell out, jay Z is
a business man, or they can start to think like
this has always been my logic behind why if I
was fortunate to be invited to the White House. I go,
I don't particularly like Donald Trump. I don't some of
his policies financially I'm interested by. But the way in

(31:28):
which he talks, he treats people, the way in which
he uses Twitter. He just tries to trash pe like
I don't like it, but I wouldn't if I was invited,
I would go Why Because you have zero chance of
making any sort of headway if you don't have the
conversations with the people who matter, and the way to
have conversation with the people matters to be inside that

(31:49):
Oval office for jay Z, you have zero chance to
make any sort of change in the National Football League,
to bring about any sort of real awareness within the
league with who they select for what performances, for what commercials,
and for what music unless you decide to partner with
the league. Did he make money, Sure he was gonna

(32:12):
make money anyway. To me, what he's done is pick
up the mantel that was left on the ground by
Colin Kaepernick and said like, hey, you know what, I'll
see this thing through to the finish. Up coming next,
the greatest of all time has no interest in coaching.

Dan Byer, what's the game, dog? The game today is

(33:16):
guess who? All right? By yeah, that is who is
doing this? Guess who can make Major League Baseball history
by homering four times today in their fourth straight game.
So it would be the New York Yankees. Nope, uh,
the Boston Red Sox, the Houston Astros, Nope, nope, nope, nope,

(33:42):
hold on, hold on, I need somebody had four or
more home runs in their last three games three games.
I did Astros, I did did, I did Doyers. The
Dodgers can do so it would be the first time
it happened since night. Why did you say Doyers. Yeah,
I get Spectrum just so I can watch the Newyers. Yeah,

(34:03):
there you go. They've homered a bunch of the last
three games, don't that's that's not bad that they've had
a lot of donut homers. Dodgers trailing the Marlins right
now one nothing in the second Marlins are bad at baseball.
Guess who does is an NFL quarterback who said he

(34:25):
would never get into coaching after he has done playing.
That would be Thomas Patrick Edward Brady. Yes, that is
the case. In fact, his answer when asked was quote Helmo,
I'm never coaching and hell no, hail no, why would
you you know, he's got other things to do. I

(34:46):
Guess who was an NFL head coach that led his
team to the playoffs last season that said yesterday he
wants to know who will be his Week one starter
by the end of their third preseason game. Gonna give
me the who's again? Okay, he's an NFL head coach
went to the playoffs last season, said yesterday he wants
to know who his starter will be Week one. He does,

(35:10):
he obviously doesn't know us of now, correct by the
end of the third preseason game, but it maybe for reasons. Ah,
that would be Frank Reich. Yeah, that is correct. So
he kind of wants to know about the health of
Andrew Luck and says by the end of that game
next week says he'd like to know who his starter
is going to be. Again, that's why I gave you

(35:30):
that early bet. Gave that an event. Like, look, you
guys don't remember two years ago, I watched the same
Colts team without Andrew Luck take the field against the
Dallas Cowboys in their Week three preseason game, and I said,
they with Jim Sworge at quarterback, they won't win a game.
They're playing the Rams on the road. It was like
the Rams at home. Easy bet, And that's what we're

(35:51):
gonna do here. Guess who Doug is, a former NFL
first round pick that the Vikings are looking at trading
away like On Treadwell. Yes, that is the case, the
first rounder on the block. His training camp starts to
wind down for the Vikings. Well, Lakwan tra, I mean,
you know, look, they have two fabulous wide receivers and

(36:13):
the Kuon Treadwall has never been the same since he
tore up his knee in college. Remember that play he
was going into the end zone to score and win
the game. I think it might have been the egg
Bowl and he blew out his knee. It was as
he and he dropped the football like right before the
goal line. Do you guys remember the play? Yeah? I
thought he snapped his leg. That's what. That's why did
he snaps like? It wasn't he did snap his leg.

(36:34):
It was a it was a leg snap. You're right,
but that was That was like Josh Dockson was in
that that draft as while they were all picked, there
were a bunch of wide receivers drafted in that in
that area and I believe yeah, it was Willfuller, Josh Dockson,
and Lakwan Treadwell went back to back to back in
that draft. I guess he was taken on Auburn. He
was literally at the one yard line. His right leg

(36:56):
was in the end zone, his left leg got fallen on,
broke his leg, dropped the football before going in the
end zone. And of course the first wide receiver in
that draft was Corey Coleman, all drafted ahead of Michael Thomas.
Guests who Doug got a guide on how to save
money in case of a work stoppage. Guess who got
a guide? Um NFL players, Yes, that is the answer.

(37:21):
ESPN reporting that a guide was sent out to tell them, Hey,
maybe not eating don't eat out as much. If you're
looking at a new place to live, maybe rents right
now instead of buying rent is a good option anyway,
I mean, regardless of lockout. I mean the markets are cooling, cooling,
and the market teams to have peaked on a wait
a little bit, but that's what they do every time.

(37:42):
And then and then the owners bleed him out. They
have to have their checks. Finally, Doug guess who was
the captain of the U S President's Cup team and
said he was still trying to make the team as
a player on points, even though that was mathematically impossible.
Tiger Woods, Yeah, that's correct, saying that he was Yeah,
I gonna give it a shot. But even if he
wins the BMW Championship this week, still wouldn't be able

(38:04):
to have as many points to be an automatic. So
it gets to go, I'm gonna select any meny mighty, Yes,
that's correct. This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Catch it was it a catch? Tiger by the toe.
If he hollers, let him go. My mother said to

(38:24):
pick the very best one, and you are not going
to to be it. Not because it's dirty now because clean,
just because the kids go behind the magazine. Was that
what it was? Something like that? Rick Buker joins the show.

(39:08):
got a big story in the NBA. I guess I
didn't buy into DeMarcus Cousins changing the NBA landscape last
year when he signed with the Warriors, nor did I
think he would have a huge year with the Lakers.
But there is a correlation between a big offseason signing,
and what happened today Boogie DeMarcus Cousins. Boogie Cousins tore
his A c L in an individual workout in Las Vegas.

(39:31):
So he's out for the year. And now he's had
the achilles, He's had the blown quad muscle, and now
he's had the a c L. Just a terrible litany
of injuries for a guy who, I'll be honest, the
people I knew who knew him in Sacramento hated him.
Totally immature, Uh, impossible to coach a losing type of player.

(39:51):
You know, he put up big numbers to where he
is now seen as you know what, not not a
terrible guy, not terrible teammate. So we go from there.
But to me, the correlation is, if I'm the Brooklyn Nets,
I am scared to death about unwrapping Kevin Durant anytime soon.
Durance had a foot injury, multiple calf injuries, and now

(40:13):
as a as a torn achilles tended. Remember the broken foot,
which didn't heal right, And it feels like once that
achilles go, now the sudden everything else starts to go.
Let's bring in Rick Puke from Bleach Report, longtime NBA inside.
Of course, you see him on Fox Sports one. UM,

(40:34):
all right, dude, it's kind of some heavy breathing there.
And am I am I? Am I crazy to make
the correlation between k D, who's the wrong side of thirty,
and what his the rest of his career might look
like in comparison to Mark to DeMarcus. Look, there's there's
reason to have concern anytime you have an achilles injury.

(40:55):
That said, there's a vast difference in their natural athleticism
and the weight at which they play, and so I
don't believe there's the same there should be the same
level of concern or that this is the beginning of
the end. Uh again to non contact injuries for de

(41:16):
Marcus of a major type UM and just the size
and the lack of of natural mobility I believe is
ultimately what cost us. And the other part is to
be honest, I think de Marcus did really uh from
everything I've heard, he put everything he could into the rehab.

(41:39):
But he's never been a good body guy. He's been
a bad guy. He got a bad body guy for
a long time, and something Sometimes there's just an inherent
weakness when your body is not used to working that
hard and you easily put on weight as he he would.
That means you've got to work twice as hard to
keep that way off, and when your body is already compromised,

(42:02):
that ends up just being a recipe for disaster. And
those are things that k D does not have to
worry about. Rick Pucker joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
I also pointed out earlier in the show. I get
that guys don't want to be worn down by playing
for Team USA, But how many times we heard people
go like, you know, I just don't want to get hurt,
and here's the market that they are going to work

(42:24):
out anyway you can get hurt in a non contact thing,
you know, by yourself. I almost think you're better off
being surrounded by the team with the best trainers. Then
you go ahead, Yeah, here's the distinction, and there there
is a There is a pro and a con to it.
But the con is that for two weeks, you know,
once competition begins, and honestly, if you're trying to make

(42:46):
the team, you can't nurse an injury. You can't take
a day off the way you could if you're training
on your own. If you. If you tweak something and
you're training on your own, you know what, I'm gonna
go light today or whatever. Once competition gains and you're
in that two week mix, you can't really shut it down,
or if you do, then you're putting the team at

(43:06):
a at a major disadvantage. So I think that that's
where the I think that's where the distinction is with
guys working out on their own is the does it
possibility exist guys getting hurt no matter where you're, where
you are, where you're training, what you're doing. But there's
a different factor in terms of if something's not feeling
quite right, you can take a day off or you

(43:28):
can go light, and when you're in the midst of
the international competition, that's not an option. Yeah, it's it's
it's very very hard to do. Rick Bucker joining us
from Fox Sports one and Bleacher Report. What did the
Lakers do now? Well, there are a couple of guys
out there. Ultimately um that kens Fred still on the
market and then a still on the market. Uh Freed

(43:50):
in particular never thought of him as a shooter, but
all the time that he was on the bench with
the net um, apparently he did nothing but shoot threes,
and he's actually developed a little bit of range. Jokim
Noah can't shoot from range, but has the passing skill.
Look that they can get somebody who might eat a
couple of minutes. But I've long thought that their their

(44:14):
best avenue is to convince Anthony Davis to play the
five and play Lebron at the four and uh that
that that to me is their ideal lineup. So this
actually may uh may benefit Frank Vogel, and that with
JaVale McGee really the only other center on the roster currently,

(44:35):
it gives him more impetus to two or or Ammo
to convince a d that he should play, uh play
the five position. I will say to you know, DeMarcus
did a decent amount of rehabbing his his image. But
if I'm Frank Vogel, this is one less um mouse

(44:56):
defeat high personality to deal with it. It's it's a
benefit for him because from what I've heard from the Warriors,
they did a tremendous job of covering just how much
of a headache at times that the Marcus was this
past year. Um both KD and DeMarcus, they the core
of the Warriors really held this thing together in a

(45:20):
way that the fact that more didn't come out in
terms of their internal issues is really a testament to
the professional wisdom of Draymond, Steph and Clay. How bad
is this team USA? Team who I They're not very good.
They don't have leadership, they don't really have a go

(45:41):
to guy, guys who play the game without the ball.
They're limited in that. It is. It's one of the
reasons why Derrick White has risen in the ranks the
way that he has, because he just can make simple plays.
He sees the floor and and they really don't have

(46:02):
I mean, Donovan Mitchell is probably their best go to guy,
and he's been extremely streaky. Kemba Walker has I love
his his his persona and his personality and his presence,
but he has not been good on the floor. And uh,
and the bigs are all mixes and matches. You've got

(46:22):
a Brook Lopez who's gonna be great stretching the floor,
but not really a roller to the rim. You've got
Miles Turner who hasn't been able to shoot from range
and should be a roller to the rim. It's like,
I don't I don't know the level that the saving grace.
Maybe I don't think that the international competition is going
to be a spear since it's been in the past,

(46:43):
but there are a lot of worrisome signs with this
national team, and my my premises that they should be.
I'm I'm okay with this. I think that this development,
I think the growth of young players through our national program,
I think that's the way it should be. I think
we need to stop star chasing when it comes to

(47:04):
uh putting guys on on Team USA. Well, what about
the idea of like the Olympics being a twenty two
and under team or a twenty four and under type team.
It's it's look, the reason the rest of the world
caught up caught up with us because we were sending
our absolute best and they were developing their younger guys

(47:26):
and playing against us and honing them, and as a result,
they closed the gap. Now there's certain you know, obviously
there's certain programs. They have a lot of veterans involved too,
but it was mostly over the last two decades it's
been their young players evolving. And I'm to the point
now where the game is so global and the the

(47:48):
value of it has really dissipated for the top pros
in in the n b A. I'm good with it
becoming a development aspect for our games. So the NBA
game is better because it's going to be a rude awakening.
It's gonna be eye opening for uh these players playing
in the international game and seeing what they don't have

(48:11):
and what their athleticism does not allow them to compensate for.
And if it ultimately makes the NBA game better and
it makes our young players evolve into more complete players,
I am all for that. And if it means we
don't win gold every year, I'm still okay with that
because I think the state of basketball in the United

(48:33):
States will be better served for it. I agree. Last thing,
Tyler apparently near a deal to be the Clippers assistant.
Of course, he was assistant or doc going back to
the Boston days. But I can't think that that Tyler
thinks this went well for him right. Like I know,
he wouldn't have gotten the contract he wanted, but he
would have been the head coach of the Lakers and
they eventually would have had Anthony Davis and Lebron James

(48:55):
and he'd be potential to get whatever contract he wanted
going forward. I think he missed played this one and
becoming an assistant coach with the Clippers may may win
in social media, but in the real media it looks
like a misstep. Yeah. I the one question that I
just have is where his health is and how much

(49:16):
he really wanted to jump back into the fire with
all that goes with coaching Lebron James and not having
the I think essentially what he was looking for is
I want to know that I have the complete backing
of the franchise behind me if I'm going to take

(49:37):
on that task, And the way the contract conversation went,
I think it led him to believe it's not that
solid behind me. So what am I really getting into?
So I think from appearance's sake, and I think, for
as far as you know, if aspirations career aspirations, I
think you're right, But I'm just the question that I

(50:00):
have in my mind is how bad did he really
want it? And you know, maybe taking this as a
you know, as a filler is not as much of
a downer to Tie as it might appear to us.
Awesome stuff. Rick Buker, Bleacher Report FS one buke thanks

(50:20):
so much, you got a duck pleasures all mind Doug
Gotlap Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right, I
want to get to the analytics side of football. You're
like analytics that's basketball threes and layups and free thos. No, no, no.
Analytics is huge in the National Football League. What does
it tell us about the evolution at wide receiver and
the de evolution at running back? Find out Warren Sharp

(50:44):
is an NFL analytics expert, joins us upcoming next, be
sure to catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap
Show weekdays at noon eastern three pm Pacific Doug got
Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. I found this article to
be fascinating, and I'm so happy that war In Sharp
joins us here on the Dug Gotlip Show on Fox
Sports Radio. I I made a plea for America to

(51:07):
bet on the Chargers week one of the season, their
three point favorites in most books summer three and a
half at three point favorites at home against the Colts,
and the Colts right now we don't know if they'll
have Andrew Luck. Now. My logic behind it is Vegas
has always set the home line as three. You have
three points for being at home. So what Vegas is

(51:30):
telling you is we think the Chargers will win by three.
That's the line, and if it was on a neutral
side to be a pick um game. And I'm like, man,
the Charges are loaded. I like what the Colts have done.
They put a ton of money in that offense and
the offensive line, but without having Andrew Luck, and like,
they're good, but they're not elite. I feel like the
Chargers are elite and they're at home. So Warren, your

(51:51):
new article basically dismisses the idea of home field advantage
in comparison to years in the past. Is that about Ryan?
It's it's it's is decrease, the importance of it. Home
field advantage is still valuable. It's simply not worth the
standard three points that it once was. Um, there's a
variety of reasons for that. A place like the Charger's

(52:13):
current stadium, where they're playing in a soccer field more
or less with very few UH fan presents, is definitely
going to affect a number of the factors that impact
home field advantage. UM. Partially is the crowd noise, and
of course, you know the road team is more used
to playing on the road. So they are doing things

(52:33):
that allows them to perform with crowd noise. There's not
as much crowd noise in l A that's going to
decrease the home field advantage. So certainly there are different
stadiums that have more or less home field advantage. Chargers
a definite place that does not have as much. That
being said, I still think that's a good wager. You
have very little to lose. There's a very good chance
luck it does not play, and you've they're going to

(52:54):
pull the number off the board and set this thing.
It probably the Chargers, I would say minus step and um,
no doubt four point move up to the seven. And
so that's a massive edge if you end up getting
no luck in this game. That's fascinating stuff. Warrant shocked. Okay,
so what are some of the factors, right, It's I mean,
I've the interesting thing is people point out how the

(53:16):
Charger stadium is consistently not full of Charger fans. I
look around the NFL and I see a lot of
empty seats and a lot of different stadiums, right, because
it's it's better to watch it at home. Isn't that
a big factor? That's a huge factor of multiple societal factors.
First of all, there's more HD programming, Flat screen TVs

(53:38):
are much cheaper, and TVs in general have have gotten
much more affordable. You've got the rise of fantasy football,
so all of a sudden, people don't care about just
watching one game at the stadium. They want to be
connected to all of their games, and it's a lot
easier to do that, especially with better viewing angles and
in replay at home, when you can digest lots of

(53:58):
games simultaneously, even if you don't have, you know, the
Direct TV package, but you're getting the Red Zone channel
and things of that nature, it's a lot easier to
be able to digest that. So those are like societal
issues that make it less likely for people to want
to go to games and be boisterous and loud and
and rambunctious. Other reasons, like off the field reasons include

(54:22):
you know, that's probably from playing your days of playing sports.
Travel is much easier now than it ever has been.
You know, charter jet make it a lot easier than
than what travel used to be. Like, there's improved medical
care and sports science and nutrition. So the road teams
going on the road don't aren't such a disadvantage like
it used to be back in like the eighties and
the nineties. Um players don't have as much desire to

(54:45):
go out at night and party the night before the games.
They view it as more of a business trip. Before
it used to be when they weren't making as much
money playing football, it was like a perk of being
on the team. You got eight road games or whatnot.
You got a chance to go party with your brothers
out on the road. But now the player salaries are
are much higher. You know, this is a business trip
for a lot of teams, and they can watch film

(55:07):
and they can do a lot more things in their
hotel room to prepare for the game. And then the last,
but not least, you've got the on field reasons. Teams
are getting more accustomed to the crowd noise. If there
is crowd noise right silent towns, you've had the opportunity
experiment practicing against crowd noise. A while ago, they didn't
even have the ability for a radio in quarterbacks ear

(55:28):
to call into place, you have to like signal it
in from the sideline, run guys in. So it's just
a numerous different reasons why it's a lot easier for
road teams now more than it ever has been before.
Warren Sharp and go to his website Sharp Football Analysis
dot com. He joins us in the Doug Gotlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. You do predictive NFL analytics

(55:48):
and visualized data. Help me with what we'll see from
the Oakland Raiders because we assume Antonio Brown will be back,
but we don't know when. And then if he's back,
how does that change the dynamic of their entire offense. Well,
it's definitely a big factor. Having that number one wide
receiver is very beneficial. The coverages that he draws, even

(56:10):
when he is not the target of the past or
if it's a run play, are still going to be
valuable elements towards that offense, uh meeting its potential. One
thing that we know about John Gruden from what I've
seen in him in his career as a coach, very
good with the XS and os, But where he clearly
struggles is when he's able to get his fingers in

(56:31):
the pie and start playing around with personnel and bringing
guys in and out of the organization. And so the
Open Raiders, I think from an excellent nose perspective, are
going to be relatively prepared and a decent overall team.
There's two big issues that I have with them. And
as it relates to Antonio Brown, let's assume he's back
to a gets a helmet he likes, and he's actually

(56:52):
out there on the field. At Number one is the quarterback.
Derek Carr is not as good as Ben Roethlisberger was,
and Derek Car does not throw the football as often
as Ben Roethlisberger doesn't. Is more of a balanced offense,
whereas the Steelers have a very pass oriented offense. So
Antonio Brown is not going to get quite the number
of targets. The other thing is is that the offensive

(57:12):
line coach for the Oakland Raiders is perhaps the worst
position coach in the NFL of the last fifteen twenty years,
and that's Tom Cable. Virtually every single stop that he
has made his team is ranking bottom Ken inefficiency along
the offensive line in pass protection, and he's been like

(57:33):
Oakland used to have a really good offensive line, but
he comes in last year and once again it's a
bottom Ken pass protection offensive line that's gonna hurt Derek
Car's ability to reach his potential. It's going to hurt
the ability to utilize Antonio Brown as much as he
should be utilized. So I think that there's a lot
of question marks still on the Oakland Raiders, but I'm
not going I'm not betting they're under or they're over.

(57:55):
I'd probably lean a little bit more towards their under,
But I just think that there's too many headaches dealing
with this team to think optimistically right now about them.
If you're the Dallas Cowboys, what's the what's the value
you would put on Zeke Elliott? It's tough when you
want to play Dak Prescott too, and you have the
most expensive offensive line in the NFL. And I think

(58:15):
around the league, the hardest thing for teams and even
fans as we're observing what the teams are doing, is
trying to figure out how are we going to separate
our quarterbacks production from what the plays from the play caller,
because the influence of the play caller bleeds right into
what that quarterback is capable of doing. And then how
are we going to separate out the running backs production
from that offensive line because we know so much of

(58:37):
what the running back is capable of doing. Is led
by that offensive line, and the Dallas Cowboys for years
have had one of the best in the league. Um,
and so Zeke Elliott has benefited from that. It's going
to be interesting to see what happens if you're paying
DAC and you're paying Zeke and then your offensive line
can't be as good. What is going to happen to
Zeke's overall production? And especially you get into like year

(59:00):
on tract number two for running backs, they tend to
fall off. It's the most injured position in the NFL.
Is unfortunate, but that's just the nature of that position.
So I am never in favor of spending a lot
on a running back because it prevents you from spending
on other positions that are more valuable to winning games
in the NFL. But Dallas certainly got themselves spend a

(59:21):
tricky spot here. Yeah, and then you have the Dak
Prescott thing. We're in sharp joining us a sharp football
used to us his analytics and predictive analysis to help
you learn more about football. Following on Twitter as well,
he joins this Doug Gotlip show Fox Sports Radio. Um,
then you have Dak Prescott, who they don't have to
they don't have to do anything right. It makes the
company in this year. They could franchise TAG him next year,

(59:42):
could franchise TAG him the year after that, if they
want after that, if they want, you know that they're not.
But it seems like they want to get a deal
done to get costs certainty, even at the price of
overpaying him. What do you think, Dak when when an
analyst guy looks at Dak Prescott, what does he think? Well,
I see central in doc I see a guy who's

(01:00:02):
offensive play caller was Jason Garrett and was using far
too many runs and putting Dak in less advantageous situations.
I'm interested to see what Kelen Moore does. He's going
to be hopefully a little bit more of a creative guy,
a little bit more of an aggressive guy. And we
we'll see what the injury status is of Amari Cooper,
who's dealing with I think Planner Fast Year I just
didn't foot. But if Amari Cooper is healthy, like, that's

(01:00:25):
finally a really good, reliable number one wide receiver that
DAK is going to be able to target. All of
those factors should make DAS production in t a little
bit better than what he's done in the last year,
so that's going to increase his value. And then as
other deals get done at other quarterbacks who need to
get deals done, you know they're gonna ultimately end up

(01:00:45):
paying Doc a little bit more. So I could see
why in some respects, if you think he's the guy
you're going to try to push to just get a
deal done. You The frustrating part if I was a
Dallas Cowboys fan right now today looking back, is we
had years where Act was super cheap because it was
the third round pick, making peanuts, and Zeke was super
cheap because he was on a rookie deal, and we

(01:01:06):
did nothing right. We did nothing. We did not win
in the postseason, we did not make a trip to
the super Bowl. Now we're gonna have to start paying
these guys. Unfortunately, it's inevitable, but at some point they're
going to come back down to earth because they have
to pay guys what they're a little bit more of
what they're worth, or at least in line is what
their position is being paid. Warren Sharp check him out

point variety. Fox Sports Radio has the best sports talk

Can I ask you a question, Yes, I think Tom
Brady be a good coach. No, yeah, I'm kind of
with you. But I will say this because I think

(01:02:10):
that Brady has worked on it so much it would
be easier than Jordan's being a coach or magic or
just where it came so easy. Like, I really do
think that Brady works at it. I think I think
they all work at it. I think, um, tell me
the tell me the coach in football who has been

(01:02:33):
the great quarterback? Where's that? Why does that guy not exist?
First of all, these guys make too much money. Now
it's a grinder's job. Like, I don't, I don't see
that happening. Um. I think in terms of schematics, he
probably would have been like like twenty years in the
NFL is a long time. I think starting quarterback that
would say like it's there's there's no starting quarterbacks. And

(01:02:55):
that's why I mean, like, because yeah, Frank Reich, Jason Garrett,
those guys. You know, Matt Maggie was a quarterback. You've
got that ability to to understand. But because of their
talent being so good, I think sometimes that's you know,
it's offered to relate to the average player. Sure, but again, um,

(01:03:17):
I just I'm with you music you think he would
be a good coach. Yeah, it was basically using that
same logic and idea that Dan was saying, and I
I personally think that's what would make him a great
head coaches. You know, the story is old about how
you know, his combine, tape, his body. He's never been
one who's been like the guy who's always just had

(01:03:38):
the natural talent and athletic ability that has led him
to his greatness. It's always been something that he's worked
at and even when he did his Tom versus Time thing,
he led us behind the scenes a little bit on
how much tape he goes over. The Patriots have always
been about, you know, creating mismatches and not just relying
on our talents better than your talent. So I think
if you look at his career, what he's been able

(01:03:59):
to achieve over those years, it sort of lends itself
to thinking that he would be like Ah, I guess
you could say a Sean McVeigh, where he would be
the head coach because he's a leader. We know everyone
looks up to him because he's Tom Brady or John
Gruden and also in charge of drawing up the offense.

(01:04:19):
I get your theory, I just don't. It's never happened before, right.
Raymond Barry strikes me as like the last great player
to be a great head coach in the NFL, and
he had his up and down years. Um, the problem
with it, like first will never happen, right, So this
is just a radio discussion. We'll agree with that, you guys,
okay with that that Like this literally will never happen.

(01:04:41):
The guy has a couple on a million in the bank,
His wife has a couple on a million in the bank.
He could do anything he wants. The last thing he
wants to do is after twenty years, Hey, I want
to come back and coach football where there's even more
time put in than there is being a player. So
that's the first thing. It will never happen. But just
for radio discussion, I understand that you're pointing out because

(01:05:04):
he's not like some stud athlete. He had to work
at it. But I also think that it would be
very reasonable, super reasonable to say, like his real only
experiences from his experience, you know, as kind of a
statue s quarterback, And yeah, he leads and he ra ros,
but it's different when you're head coach, head coach. You

(01:05:24):
gotta manage he goes, You gotta, you gotta, you know,
parachute into different meetings once that you've never been a
part of. If it's offensive coordinator, maybe maybe, But then again,
are they gonna run stuff that's good for his style
of quarterback or for the style quarterback they have? And
I don't think as good as Brady is, I don't
think that his offensive mind is nearly as complex as
patents is. Payton to me, seems like the guy who

(01:05:47):
people would want to have coach, and even he doesn't
want to coach because he's got so much money and
he ultimately wants to probably own and run a team
up coming go ahead. I was just gonna say I
I was looking at it from a perspective because I
agree with you, I do think Peyton Manning would be
a good coach or offensive coordinator. I guess I was
looking at it with like got someone like Brett Farve.

(01:06:10):
I mean, I don't know if he is coaching like
high school football, but you know those videos that go
viral of him being like he didn't know what a
nickel defense was until several years into the league, or
even like an Aaron Rodgers, because we've seen you know,
sometimes people look at him and he's not the most
you know, the best leader. He can be more passive,
aggressive and probably can't relate to players as well as

(01:06:30):
someone else whereas you do hear stories behind the scenes
about you know, like Tom Brady sort of puts up
this front to the media and he does the g
Q stuff, and he may be married to a supermodel,
but he does make it an effort the older he
gets to try and relate to the younger teammates. So
I see how he puts himself into a little bit
of a different category than some of these other top quarterbacks. Look,

(01:06:51):
Farv was relatable to younger guys. He just wasn't a
He wasn't a creative think He's like, you run here
and get open. Well, honestly, that's kind of what they did.
I mean I think that the fire thing too is
you have to understand that Aaron Rodgers is also the
age and knows these guys that were his age. That
was my understanding in Green Bay that you know, all

(01:07:12):
all the young guys on that team that we're taking over,
they also they hung out with Aaron or you know,
and Brett may have you know, tried to be nice
to them or whatever, you know. But the point is
is there was always gonna be a disadvantage because he was,
you know, ten years older than than I mean, he's
They're not going to hang out with twenty four and
twenty five year olds yet Aaron Rodgers is. Yeah. I

(01:07:33):
think the coaching thing is very different in the NFL.
I think it's very hands on. I think it's super
super long ours. So are you concerned about if he
would be a head coach or they could do it?
I think they could all be great offensive coordinators. Head
coach probably, But again, like I just don't think most
of those guys want to do it right. Most of

(01:07:56):
these guys want to do it. They've already had their
time in the spotlight. I already had their time in
spotlight twenty years. It's like, I'm good, you know, I'd
rather remember. Another reason that some of the stark, the
starting quarterbacks don't do it, they get into broadcasting. It's like,
you know, could I make a couple grand being a
coach or could I make a hunter grand being a

(01:08:16):
broadcaster and just show up on weekends? Like option B
sounds better to me. You can do it forever. Team wins,
team loses, doesn't matter. So then if it's about the
workload and work well, the commitment. Why does everyone think
that Peyton is going to be gunning for a front
office job or try and somehow get into ownership, because

(01:08:36):
it's just always been the league story and usually those
are true. I guess I have a hard time believing
that he would be some sort of hands off owner
or like a laid back GM. I don't think who
either one of them, but man payment would be hands off.
He wants to run the whole thing. He doesn't want

(01:08:58):
anybody telling him what to do. Pure That's why he
wouldn't do coaching because there's too many levels above him
and correct, correct, and and it is more of a grind.
You're you're still working really hard and you're still showing
up the office. You want to do it right. But
like colling plays being offensive coordinator, like you literally have
to not only know about all of your plays and
all your personnel, but watch watch what every other team does.

(01:09:22):
Like you get ready to play the Steelers, You're gonna
watch so many Steelers defensive plays and try and know
the answer to everything. It's a grinder's job. Colin cowherd

Odell Beckham Jr. Suffering another injury in camp. If you
want to be an all time talent, it doesn't matter
where you went to college. It doesn't matter, uh to

(01:10:30):
a large degree, who your coaches were in high school college.
If you want to be an all time great, the
only thing you gotta be is healthy. You can't name
all time grades that were hurt a lot. And when
I hear about oh b J having another injury in camp,
this is the safest the NFL has ever been. This
is the least hitting on receivers they've ever been. And

(01:10:50):
oh b J's hurt again, Well, it's no big deal.
Thirty two games he's been hurt in sixteen of him
last thirty two games, he's missed sixteen of them. He's
not going to be an all time great. He's an
all time great talent. But if you're asking me over
the next four years, who's the Browns number one receiver,

(01:11:10):
it's gonna be Jarvis Landry. I don't think it'll be
Jarvis Landry. I do think there's reason for concern right um,
and that he it was the sixth time in fifteen
practices he's been held out or limited in eleven on
eleven drills. That's a lot. The hip injury is considered
a minor one. Didn't seem too concerned about it, and

(01:11:31):
she's got something going on going on with his hip.
He's also had had that quad injury last year, which
I'm not sure how much of his quad or how much.
They were just kind of done with him at the
end of the season, but he has been banged up.
And I would agree with Colin. You don't get less
hurt as you get older. You get more injured as
you get older. That's just that's just the reality of

(01:11:54):
you know, it's like in sports radio. You you don't
miss less time as you get like get in your
fifties and sixties, You're gonna miss more time because your
body is not gonna recover as quickly now you put
it in put it in football. The more you go on,
the more you'll be hurt. And I would say that's
a big cause for concern like look O O b J.
In many ways, talent wise, skill set wise, is the

(01:12:15):
perfect player. Like he's big enough and small enough. You know,
he's big enough to make to make plays on his own,
to throw the ball up and he elevates and he
can catch anything. But he's small enough to be agile
where you can line up up all over the field
and he's dynamic. Jervis Slandry does not have that type
of dynamic quick twitch, nor does he have He's got

(01:12:37):
good hands, but Bacom Jr. Has incredible hands. But the
things keeping him from being at all times being one
of the best players in the NFL is can you
be out there for sixteen games and then all the
other nonsense, all the other nonsense. So he isn't dealing
with the hip pointer. Mary kay Cabot from the Cleveland
Plame Dealer said the aforementioned injury kept Backing sidelined after

(01:13:00):
a team portion of UH Wednesday's joint practice with the Colts. Afterwards,
UH Freddie Kitchens said that the white out would likely
sit out Tonight's joint session and Saturday's preseason match up
with the Colts as well. It is not a hip
poinner instead. It's a different hip is issue. Yeah. I mean,

(01:13:23):
now you hear about guys having the torn labor in
the hip, having all sorts of you know, rotator rotation
problems in the hip, but without a ton of knowledge,
and they're not acting like that. He's they're freaked out
over it. I'd say, I'm not willing to it's just
what we what we do now, guys get vet days,
guys get more days off because they want him healthy

(01:13:45):
for all sixteen games. Yeah, chances that Odell Beckham number
one plays out his entire contract with the Browns or
does he get traded his entire air contract or the
guaranteed portion of his contract the entire contract? Okay, what

(01:14:06):
was the other question? Um? And then after that, do
you think that, um, he eventually plays on more than
one team after that? Yes? Yes, So you think he'll
be like a four or five team that by the
time he retires, Yes, I do. I think he'll chase
the spotlight. I think he'll want to do the Rams, uh,

(01:14:29):
maybe the Raiders, and then I think they'll be there'll
be one more team after that. It's it's you know,
once you get desensitized to it, once you get desensitized,
moving teams, being traded, changing addresses. You're like, whatever, I'm
not from here anyway, I'm not connected here. He doesn't
have a wife, doesn't have kids. Moving is not that hard.

(01:14:50):
It's just a new sick apartment in a new sick
town with a new stadium and a new quarterback. Outside
of that, still football. Did I read the loves? Fifth?
Did I read the loves? I thought? I thought I did.
It might be losing my mind, very possible, it's already lost. Yes,
this is true. This is very true. We will get

So Phil Simms and Bill Kawer are both in studio now.
Remember Phil Sims used to be their lead color analysts.
Now he's one of their studio analysts along with Bill Kauer,
and they got in this interesting discussion. Here's Phil Sims.

(01:17:48):
I think I had it last year before the draft.
I said, what's more important than you, laughed, is at
the quarterback of the coordinator? And you go, you know,
that's a good question. I'll have to think about that.
Cower said, it's the coordinator. I'm just owing you. Phil
Simms former quarterback says yes, but nobody ever believes it
or says, we didn't even say say it last year.
Even though we talked about it, we never said it

(01:18:09):
on air. Don't worry show one, it's coming, Bill Coward.
The coordinator can put you in the best position possible.
Quarterback can be a great quarterback, but if you don't
give him a chance, then you know what, what good?
What is it good for? You don't have have to
give him a chance to be successful, because you know,
football is the ultimate chess match. Move countermove, how much

(01:18:30):
flexibility is gonna give a guy? Can the guy get
out of a bad play? Etcetera, etcetera, etcetera. Um, I'm
gonna disagree with those two guys that are both two
brilliant football minds. I do think the coordinator matters more
than the quarterback when the quarterback doesn't matter more than

(01:18:50):
the coordinator. Let me repeat that and see if it
makes sense. I believe the coordinator matters more than the
quarterback only when the quarterdinator Well, the way, the quarterback
doesn't matter as much as a coordinator. That now, let
me translate. If we're talking about Mitch Drobiskie, if we're

(01:19:13):
talking about pick young quarterback who has to stay on time, right,
if we're talking about Marcus Mariota early in his career,
talking about Josh Allen, Guys that have a limited amount
of football and maybe their skill set isn't totally refined.

(01:19:35):
The quarter the coordinat absolutely matters those scripted first plays.
It's like watching magic, you know. Honestly, the best combination
of it is Pat Mahomes and Andy Reid. Andy Reid
great at scripting plays. When the script runs out, Now
he can add lib or they can call some plays
and he's capable of doing anything. You spend all week

(01:19:57):
pre prepping those script did plays really really really matter
if you can't add live on your own. So this
is this is like does a comedian need a script? No,
unless he needs a script. Like you put a comedian
in a movie and suddenly his mannerisms are still funny.

(01:20:19):
The jokes may be funny, but they may be overwritten
humor comparison to how he normally comes about it. On
the other hand, you can't some actors you can't have
do improv and the best that Tony Romo was one
of the best paid manning Philip Rivers, Drew Brees, Ben Roethlisberger,
those guys they I'm not saying any offense they could

(01:20:42):
be good, but it feels like just about any offense
that could be good. I don't want to undersell the
value of a top coordinator. And the other part a
by the coordinator is important is there is no salary
cap for coaches. So if you want to keep your
offensive cordiner, you want to overpay a guy to stay
at offensive coordinator, you can't. In you absolutely can, but

(01:21:02):
let's not overvalue. Often it doesn't matter how good an
offense according you are, if you don't have the dudes
that matter, and you don't have a dude at quarterback
that matter, Ultimately that gets exposed. You know, if you're
running those those scripted first fifteen plays, they run out
important part of the game. Ultimately that gets exposed. So

(01:21:30):
Sims and Bill Coward, you agree or disagree? Ry music, Yeah,
I kind of time to think you need You need
to start with at least a guy who can um
has enough skill to sort of get by on his own,
and then you just hope that the coordinator is what
can help then put you over the top. Because I

(01:21:50):
think like as you pointed out with Mitch Robinski, I
think even as good as we think Matt Negge maybe
and what he was able to prove and first year
as a head coach, but also the reason he got
that job was because what he was able to do
as a coordinator prior to that with Alex Smith and
Pat Mahomes. Yeah, right, I think at some point it
all catches up to you, whether it would be late

(01:22:12):
in the regular season or in the playoffs. Eventually, there's
only so much you can do in schemes before you know,
you've got to have a guy who can make a
play when it's the first option is gone, the second
option is gone, and now he has to go to
the third option. Right, And it felt like Aaron Rodgers
last year. That's what a great quarterback looks like when

(01:22:33):
there isn't a great coordinator, when it's a great trust
between coordinator quarterback, right, just hey, go out and make plays.
And people point out Aaron Rodgers in a bad year
he had twenty five touchdowns, two interceptions, like, that's not
a bad year. Two And I know, I know, obviously
he's the exception. So you can't always just bank on
being able to have a player of that caliber. But

(01:22:55):
you know, like Pat Mahomes, I think he's in a
great situation perfect But I mean with a guy who
has that type of athleticism and that's strong of an arm,
you're much more likely to succeed with a player like
him than just being like, well, we've got a great
offensive coordinator, even though we have Nathan Peterman taking snaps right.
But they've had like, look Andy's system, Kevin Cobb was

(01:23:15):
good in it, Donovan McNabb was good in it. Uh.
One of the Debtmer's I think was Coy Detmer was
was good in it. Like they've had a bunch of
different Alex Smith was very very good in it, and
he would never throw the ball downfield case you know,
Charlie checkdown. So I think that the can City is
the best of both worlds. You have a system that has,

(01:23:37):
you know, given inferior talented players a chance to be
successful and compete at the top level of the NFL.
You put a superior talent in that in that same offense,
getting to totally buy and then give him some freedom
in the second half, and you have a type of
dynamic weapon you really rarely see it's you know, it's

(01:23:59):
a it's a little bit like Brady Belichick. They overdo
their credit for one or the other. Instead it's both
um and like, look, I think this Andy Reid having
Pat Mahomes is a lot like Alabama having uh to

(01:24:20):
A or you know, Clemson having um Trevor Lawrence, although
they've had kind of a Trevor Lawrence but different with
Deshaun Watson. My point is like Alabama has had a
lot of average quarterbacks that they've run the football. They've
run old splash and play action. You know, they have
a lot of them, a little bit more freedom than usual.
But then you put Tua in that system and all

(01:24:43):
of a sudden, it's it's Alabama football on steroids because
they just score, score, score score score. He's just that good. Well,
that's the same thing with Pat Mahomes and the Kansi Chiefs.
The offense was already great for the Kanci Chiefs before
he got there, and then his talent as well as

(01:25:03):
um his willingness to take a shot, make plays, his feet,
his arm, his everything like that, that is like that
that's Can' City was good before him. Alex Smith had
him in the playoffs, and Red has gotten Kevin Cobb
to the playoffs. Don mcnabbed the playoffs and like you
name it, they've gone to the playoffs when any Reid
was there. But this is another level of being special.

(01:25:28):
As far as the cancy chiefs a concern. Everyone knows
the risk of driving drunk. People could get hurt or killed.
You can get arrested, incur huge legal expenses, or even
lose your job. You think drunk driving is no big deal,
you couldn't be more wrong. Drive sober or get pulled over.
Charles Robinson joins the show upcoming next, get his thoughts

on the Raiders kind of snoozer so far? Of a

When will they sign? And does he do you have
any idea? What's the matter with Andrew Luck? Why not? Next?

(01:26:12):
So Big News is made by the NFL. Earlier this week,
jay Zay jay Z is partnering with the National Football
League UM and it's He's gonna He's gonna Inspire Change
a multi platform deal. Jay Z is signing with the
National Football League, and of course it's gonna be part
of the league's Protests to Progress initiative by the NFL,

(01:26:36):
which worked privately to minimize Kaepernick. Colin Kaepernick has the
figurehead in the player's protest movement in two thousand, seventeen
and eighteen, while influencing players to stop kneeling during the
anthem in favor of engaging in social uh initiatives off
the football field. The idea is this, like look Knawa,
jay Z said, the idea was to get intention, got

(01:26:58):
people's attention, Now what do you do with the attention?
And that's what this initiative is. But jay Z joining
the NFL and not having Colin Kaepernick as part of
it and Kaepernick still being at length doesn't sit well
with some people. Let's get to Charles Robinson who joins
us um he does no outstanding a standing job as
he's an NFL insider and columnist, and he joins us.

(01:27:21):
In the dug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio, Your
Your New Column talks a little bit about this. It
does feel like, though Cap isn't involved, this is the
next wave of what anyone would want. No. I mean, look,
it's definitely the next wave of what the NFL wants, like,
there's no question about that. And what I what I

(01:27:42):
tried to illustrate is you always have to keep this
into a fuller perspective rather than just listen to the
jay Z press conference and hey, you know, now there's
attention on this. So we're past the attention standpoint. Where's
where's the where's the progress? Where does the rubber we
eat the road? Which is kind of what jay Z
said in that press conference. But I think what's important

(01:28:04):
is to always remember this is something that stretches all
the way back to seen And what I brought up
was this closed door meeting that NFL owners had with
players with with the players coalition, in which at one
point Terry Pagoula, the Bill's owner, Buffalo Bills owner said,
you know, essentially paraphrasing him, here, Look, we've got a
pr problem. We have a problem that people are not

(01:28:27):
talking about the good things we're doing. Um, so we
need a spokesman, you know, sort of any compared it
to sort of how the n r A, the gun
lobby has a spokesman to get their message out and
the NFL needs a spokesman. Well, this is two years ago,
and I think you know, there was sort of a
period there where the NFL tried to embrace the players
Coalition and Malcolm Jenkins, and he sort of was someone

(01:28:50):
that was looked at as maybe that's the spokesman. Well,
that didn't go well. Eric Read came out, obviously, the
Carolina Panthers safety came out, criticized to him, Colin Kaepernick
criticized at him um and and it was met with
mixed results. So there was this idea that the NFL
was still looking for the right person to sort of
help carry that message further than it had gone. Now

(01:29:11):
you have Jay Z who comes into the fold. And
I think the complication here is that it's what Eric
Read essentially said, It's why there there's still some friction here.
Eric Read essentially responded to something Jay Z said about
you know, look, this isn't just about Colin Kaepernick's not
about one guy. It's about all these other things, which
is something the NFL has said even privately in meetings,

(01:29:32):
like tapes, like recorded conversations that were private. Jay Z
is now saying those publicly and Eric Read's response was,
why can't it be both, like, why can't we do
this with you know, some of the social social justice initiatives,
but also create a bridge to getting Colin Kaepernick back
in the league, sort of the way Eric Reid eventually
had that opportunity. So I think that's where the friction

(01:29:53):
is right now for the people who are still having
a hard time embrace. I got a tough time thinking
he's ever getting back in the league after suing the league.
Your crew was already in the league by the time
that thing was settled. I just I think once you
take that check, your days are done and you really
know it. It's difficult. But I will say this, what's
really interesting about this is um and and you know

(01:30:16):
I'm gonna write about this soon, so I'm giving up
a little bit here like it. So Colin Kaepernick has
had these drops the last couple of you know, I
guess ten days, he's dropped a couple of videos that say,
you know, about being out of work, you know, and
being still ready in this idea denied work. You know
this counter a number of days he's been denied work.

(01:30:37):
It's very interesting to me that a settlement was reached,
a check was cut, and yet Colin Kaepernick has still
been allowed to do two things. Number One, he's still
been allowed to pursue work. So clearly there was no
stipulation in the settlement. You can no longer pursue work
in the NFL. You're done. And number two, there's no

(01:30:58):
there can't be a non disparagement clause because he's clearly
still disparaging the NFL in these videos that are saying
denied work like that's clear disparagement. Which is really interesting
because now you have to ask yourself, and I ask
you this, do they cut a check? Two end a
a collusion case against them? But they did not get

(01:31:20):
a non disparagement clause and they didn't get the guy
who brought the case against them to stop pursuing work.
What did they pay? What did they pay for? I
have the answer for you. Okay, what's here? They didn't
want those guys, They don't they don't want Goodell to
be called to testify. That's okay, That's that's what it's
worth to them. However, however much they spend it was

(01:31:43):
we we don't we we we just that's not worth
it us, you know, it's I think that's one I do.
I agree with you. I think it's twofold, and I
think that's one of the two variables. I think the
other part of it is that they had already gone
undergone a number of depositions Jerry Jones, Robert krat the
late Um, you know, Bob McNair, Stephen Ross, the number

(01:32:04):
of these guys, and I know you know a number
of these depositions centered around the relationship that these owners
have and the political alignments they have with Donald Trump. Well,
they've tried so hard to get away from Donald Trump.
And you can see why because Colin Kaepernick dropped the
video what ten days ago, and next thing you know,
Trump's on the White House lawn. He's getting asked again
about Colin Kaepernick, Andy's commenting. And I think the League

(01:32:27):
has tried so hard to separate itself from that. You
see what's going on with with Kenny Stills and and
Stephen Ross with the Hampton fundraiser for Donald Trump's reelection.
I think the League part of this, to the second
part of it is beyond Goodell not testifying, it's we
don't ever want any of that information. The depositions, all
the Discovery stuff, a lot of which centered on Trump

(01:32:48):
to hit the public air. We just don't need that,
no question I I those are those, that's the combination.
That's pretty much what I meant. But you you made
a much better point than I did. Charles Robinson joining
US Yahoo Sports, NFL, him miss joins this Doug Gotli Show,
Fox Sports Tradio. The issue I would have with Kaepernick,
I've only seen one of those things dropped. It's like
him lifting weights, Like why why isn't he throwing watching tape?

(01:33:11):
Why why isn't he pushing for any sort of opportunity?
And one of the things I've heard from NFL people
is nobody actually knows if he really wants to play,
like he says he wants to play, but like, hey, dude,
you haven't played a couple of years. Do you really
want to come in here and be a backup? Because
when you're a backup, your only job is to be ready,
but really get the start ready. But here's the rub
and that here's the problem with that. And I've also

(01:33:32):
heard that from franchises who have questioned, you know, how
much does he really want to play? Do you want
to answer offer him that's it real. It's real simple, like,
bring him in for a workout, offer him the closest
has ever got was I mean over a year ago,
now that the Seattle Seahawks, we're gonna bring him in
to work him out, and then all of a sudden, boom,
that hit a wall. No, we're not gonna bring him in.

(01:33:54):
You know, they need they have stipulations. They had all
these questions they want to ask them about the kneeling,
you know, during the anthem, all that stuff, and then
it was, you know, it was it was no longer
something that was on the table. Well, since then, no
one's offered him a job, no one's offered him a
chance to work like That's that's what I think the
complication is here is if you really want to put
Colin Kaepernick to the test, you really want to question

(01:34:14):
his motivation, it's real simple. Offer him a job or
offered to bring him in. Let's come in, work out.
We're we're looking for a quarterback, we're looking for some
depth at the position. Let's see how interested you really are.
And if Colin Kaepernick then says no, if he turns
it down, says I'm not showing you know, what then
at that point it's on him. Yet the league for
whatever reason, has not made this over choice. Well, I

(01:34:36):
mean there's also look the Ravens, clearly I thought wanted
to and then his girlfriend had that post like that
was done right, and you have to and as you know,
like you're gonna go somewhere with his a rabbi in
the room, right, somebody who's coached you, believes in you,
and you got on some level fit And there just
aren't that many places you have teams that are invested

(01:34:57):
in these younger quarterbacks, even if Kaepernick is more you know,
you have that group of older quarterbacks that you're not
or even Russell Wilson, Like Russell Wilson did one Colin
Kaepernick's backup, no way, no thank you. He doesn't he
does not want that um. And then there's you know,
there's a couple of others that are kind of in
the middle. But you know, you have and Marcus Mariota.

(01:35:19):
They're trying to figure that out in Nashville. I don't
think that plays in Nashville. I think there are very
few potential options for him, even if he was willing
UH to take him in an offer. I think there
are very few options when you talk about, hey, we've
gone through O T A. S. We had a whole
summer in the passing program. You know, here's all these
multitude of different things that we've done, and we've got

(01:35:42):
our set group. I think it becomes more complicated when
injuries set in. You know, now, now Nate Sudfeld, the
Eagles are defensible, I think because you know, what Nate
Sudfeld breaks is non throwing risks. It's a six week injury,
you know, so there's no like, you know, hey, we
have to you know, scramble all hands to get this repaired.
But at the same point, you know, the Detroit Lions, okay,

(01:36:03):
they have obviously complications with their backup Josh Johnson team
now in the NFL that Josh Johnson has been signed to.
I think that's part of the complications for the NFL
is that you cannot realistically say that Josh Johnson is
more worthy of an opportunity when it comes to football now.
And I think that's the disparity is that if the

(01:36:24):
problem arises that teams are trying to argue this on
a football standpoint, if if if we're just gonna put
honesty to it, and someone says, hey, you know what,
like we don't want to deal with that. That's way
too much garbage, Like we feel like it's just a
lot of stuff to deal We don't want that. Or
like you said with Russell Wilson, we don't want him
in the quarterback up because you know what, Colin Kaepernick
has always had a chip on his shoulder. He's always

(01:36:45):
felt like people denied him. Um, you know, and and
he'll he'll go after our starter. We want someone who
supports our starter, not someone who goes after him. If
you want to argue that, then I think you can
argue it, just don't argue it from a seer football standpoint.
I do think it's all of the above, though, isn't it,
Like that's your point. Is totally fair. Hasn't played football

(01:37:06):
is totally fair. Um, you know, the personality quirks. And
then the last thing is like, look, wherever he goes,
he's gonna be a backup. And the job of the
backup is not necessarily to be an elite quarterback. Job
of the backup is to get the starter ready. And
it's literally something he's never done and he didn't do
when he was in San Francisco when he lost his job. Yeah,
and I see that. I don't disagree with like, but

(01:37:28):
that that's also incumbent upon teams when they're asked the question.
You know, Um, well, Seattle did answer it that way.
Seattle did. Remember Pete Carroll came out and said he
still thinks he's a starter. We still think he's a starter.
So it's not a good fit. That was That was
the trick. I felt like that was the soft Hey,
you gotta come here and be a backup, and Russell's

(01:37:49):
just not feeling it. And really, I think we got
Seattle in trouble. Was they tried to say that they
hadn't asked him questions about the anthem stuff, and then
it came out that they did, you know, and then
it's it's it's you and I both know. It's complicated.
There's a lot of politics involved, There's a lot of
locker room stuff involved. And that's why when the Eagles
came out, you know, so press tailors asked the quarterbacks coach,

(01:38:11):
you know, hey, what about Colin Kaepernick. Nate Sudfeld goes down,
what about coln He just says, not on our radar.
Gets asked again, not on our radar, gets asked the
third time, not on our radar. Okay, you know what
that's not. You're not sitting there and trying to say
on the back end or hey on this sly, Hey
it's about football. We don't think he's a good football
player anymore. You're not. You know, if you just want
to say it's not on our radar, okay, then it's

(01:38:33):
not on your radar. I mean, that's it. I think
it's just when it crosses into some areas of being
disingenuous and how the process is going, then I think
that's when it starts to get complicated. Charles Robinson, Yahoo's
Sports NFL insider and columnist, Charles, Great stuff, awesome discussion.
Appreciate you be our guest and Fox Sports Radio absolutely
thanks for having be sure to catch live editions of

The Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three
pm Pacific. Okay, so here's my question to you, Dan,
Yes you're Dale or hard Jr. You get Let's say
you work the race, right, do you your your bus
home right? Yes? Yes? Okay, but like how long do
you stay off the plane? Like this is a real

(01:39:15):
discussion do you get back on the player, like, Look,
I survived a plane crash. What are the chances I'll
be in another plane crash? I mean you're talking infinitesimal percent.
There was a kid that played basketball at Michigan who
was in two plane crashes, right, I think his dad
died the plane crash. Its a kid like that. But
outside of that, like that never happens. Don't you talk
yourself into it and go like, hey, no one's involved

(01:39:37):
in two plane crash. But I look at it as
any small thing that goes wrong for the immediate future,
whether it be a little bit of turbulence, Uh, maybe
there's just a little bit of swaying in the plane.
That's the stuff that that really really messes with you.
And as it sounds like this was happening as they
were landing, So anytime you're landing in a plane, which

(01:40:00):
is every time, Yeah, I think you would just be
freaking out. And even if you got through it, you
still would have the the anxiety of dealing with what
you had gone through music, what would you do. Wow,
that's a tough one. Um. But dogs okay, I think
I'm glad they're all okay, But like the poor dog,

(01:40:21):
like you know, right like that, you don't like, you
don't leave the dog behind thing caught on fire, They
grab the dog and went out. I think I would
probably not do it right after working, but you know,
maybe a month or two, and then eventually you'd kind
of have to move past it and try and assimilate
back into every day travel because I have to imagine

(01:40:43):
he probably travels quite a bit if he's working those races.
I mean, I know there's obviously a season, so in
the offseason, maybe he doesn't travel as much. I'm sure
he travels all those things all the time, right, Like
he's Dale Ornhard Jr. That's that's that's a car to
him is to get to get on of G five
and go somewhere. So yeah, I mean, you're you're shaking up,

(01:41:04):
there's no question, and maybe your numbs you're just like
I'm gonna catching the plane go home. I've just the way,
you know, my mentality might be, Hey, what are the
what are the chances Dan Byer, what are the chances
that you're in? But again, I don't think it's the crash,
it's everything that goes with it. So I mean that
like that it doesn't matter if he crashes, or it

(01:41:26):
does actually matter if you crash the second time. Oh no,
he's not going to crash the second time. That's what
I mean. It's a it's an near impossibility that he crashes.
It's dealing with the anxiety that comes with it, of
of being scared out of your mind or or freaking
out on any little plane movement that would then bring

(01:41:49):
you back to that plane. I got it. I mean, like, look,
this is dude to drive race cars for the rest
of his life, you know, like he was. You're more
likely to die in a NASCAR in a race car
than you are a plane. And now that you've already
gone through a plane crash, you're like next year, next weekend,
there in Darlington, Then they're in Indy, then they're in Vegas,
then they're in Richmond. Their season goes Forever Home in Charlotte, Dover, Talladega, Kansas, Martinsville.

(01:42:15):
All these are energy This is energy cut playoffs. I
mean all these things. You know Texas that's in Dallas.
They go to Phoenix to go to Miami. Like you're
gonna go to Phoenix. You're not busting out to Phoenix.
You gotta fly, dude, that's a wis is a hard one.
This is a hard one. I think mentally you have
to convince yourself. I went through a plane crash. We survived.

(01:42:39):
There is almost It's like zero point zero zero zero
zero one chance I can be involved in the plane crash.
And I understand what you're saying. Anytime it rattles, any
time it shakes, I mean, you're gonna have to go
through therapy. This is this is not the last that
we have heard of it. So and we mentioned about

(01:43:02):
DeMarcus Cousins, or at least a Dan did so DeMarcus
Cousins tears his A c L And you know, cars
are like this right where when something goes bad, a
bunch of stuff starts to go bad. Have you ever
done ever had that? Like all of a sudden, the

(01:43:22):
transmission goes, then the radiator goes, then then you you
then a belt. I had this car I'm actually my wife's.
My wife had an SUV before he moved to California,
and we loved it, loved it and it literally no issues.
And we bought the extended power train warranty and that

(01:43:42):
was up to I'm gonna say eighty or ninety miles.
We literally got to like seventy eight thousand miles and
the power train went like we had and then once
once that went like then all of a sudden, the
belt went transmission went. So when you DeMarcus Cousins memory
tore his achilles tendon, then he blew out his quad muscle,
and now he's torn as a c l Compare that

(01:44:05):
to Kevin Durant, who is a little bit older. He's
had you know, foot surgery because he broke his foot
and it didn't heal correctly and had an additional surgery.
He's also had multiple calf injuries. Now he hasn't hows
achilles tendon tear. And that's really what started for DeMarcus Cousins.
They repair your achilles tendon, that's not gonna get hurt

(01:44:26):
ever again. But artificially repairing an ace achilles tendon, he
is going to strengthen it and weaken everything else around.
Like it all kind of fits together, and when one
piece phrase and gets shorn up, something else becomes overly tight.
I would be very very cautious if I'm Kevin Durant.

(01:44:46):
The pace of my rehab how strenuous I want to
go hard, but I want to focus on missing the
entire year and playing next year. Because DeMarcus wasn't ready
in his body clearly wasn't either. Do Zeke Gillett still
in shape during his contract holdout find out next. Fox

a Fantasy Football League? I don't know we're gonna have
a FI We're gonna have like a show or like
a Fox Sports radio fantasy, but probably not. But well,
we only have like four guys here, but we could
have we could have ours. We have the shows that

three shows that think Straight out of Vegas would emanate

get to Dan Buyer, Dan, what's the what? What do
you have the press? I got a bunch dug. Authorities
in Elizabeth in, Tennessee said that Dealer and Our Junior
and his wife were not seriously injured after they were
on a small plane that crashed at a local airport
earlier today. Airport manager said the plane ran off the
runway and crashed. Everyone on board able to get off
the plane. They were taken to a local host little
for observation. Apparently, Dale Junior had some cuts and abrasions,

(01:47:04):
but nothing serious. So a scary situation as he was
heading to Bristol for this weekend's NASCAR race. Scary stuff.
My question is do you get that when do you
get back on the plane and you know, you just
get at You're gonna have to explain to yourself and
you all your friends, like, hey, I was involved one
plane crash, no chance of two. The big news in

d A in terms of you have a problem I have.
I have not gambled on preseason football, but I would think,
like the w n B A, and I was told
this years ago to take the under like when you can.

(01:48:33):
Maybe gambling is caught up to it, but early in
w n b A betting the under always hit. I
would think that would be the case with preseason football.
I would guess so as well. I'll give you the
lines upcoming well. By the way, one of the topics
of conversation after the first week of the preseason are
the Packer fans and them not being loud. Roger said
earlier this week, Hey, slash beer prices. It's about eight

(01:48:55):
bucks eight fifty for a beer at Lambeau Field. Make
it a little cheaper. Maybe the the fans get a
little bit more liquored up and become a little bit
louder at Lambeau Yeah, I mean, like one eight dollar
fifty beer will probably last him the entire game. Yeah,
why not, or you could get three of them for
that price. I was talking about his he doesn't chug beer.

(01:49:15):
That's right, that's right, that's right. ESPN reported earlier today
that Cowboys hold out running back Ezekiel Elliott, currently around
two and twenty pounds, which would be his lightest since
entering the NFL. Don't mind it, don't mind. I'm a
lighter is better than heavier. Lighter is better than heavier.
Uh Zeke has always been thick and to twenty. You're

(01:49:36):
less likely to get hurt coming in, get a soft
tissue injury if you're light rather than heavy. I wonder
who leaked this report. Probably yeah, surprise, surprise. The Cowboys,
by the way, without Ezekiel Elliott, will face the Rams
in Honolulu coming up on Saturday. The Rams won't be
playing their starters. In fact, they're Yeah, Aaron Donald and

(01:49:57):
Marcus Peters are going to make the trip at not play,
but most of the their starters, including quarterback Jared Goff,
won't even make the trip to It's a super um,
it's it's a super super short trip. I believe the
Rams take off on today, they land this afternoon, and
they play Saturday in our back Saturday night, Like that's

(01:50:20):
the worst Hawaii plan. Hawaii trip makes a great way
to know you're not going to make the team. Is
I'm playing in Hawaii bad news? Is? It pretty much
means I won't make the team. I don't matter. I'm
only playing the fourth quarter in Honolulu. That does not
that does not bode well. You mentioned earlier about Odell
Beckham Jr. And his hip injury. Well, the Broads wide

(01:50:42):
receiver was on the practice field doing individual drills today
after sitting out yesterday for what people have been calling
a hip pointer for O b J. Yeah, did you
see this story? Can I can I give you a
press start year old man just in in India drove
his BMW three series into a canal because he was
upset his parents didn't get him a Jaguar first birthday.

(01:51:02):
So people in India are more entitled than kids in
the States. That's amazing. I thought we were the only ones.
Guy kid's names Akshaksh was demanding for a Jaguar car
from his father, but when his father failed to buy
him when he threw his BMW in a fit of anger.
Kids these days, kids cheeze oh man I don't like

(01:51:27):
it when kids have nicer cars than I do. And
my car is like over ten years old, so I
like your car. Are you got an acurate right? Yeah,
I think we'll never stop. That's true. Literally, dry that
like four miles and just get out and go. That
was a good one. Doug was pulling out of the
parking garage in front of me yesterday and I tried
to do pretend outrage and you just kind of were like, whatever,
dance shut up. Well, it's because you always giggle. You're

(01:51:50):
a big laugher. You were like the happiest person on earth.
So you pull in, You're like, hey, outrage and then
you start laughing and like that didn't last very long. No, no,
well you just kind of blew me off and we're like,
all right, whatever and shut up, you know, move along.
I don't want to think I was serious. Actually I
didn't even know if you knew it was me, and
I didn't want to, Okay, alright. Remember in the game
time when we talked about the Dodgers closing in on history.

(01:52:12):
If they hit four home runs today, they would be
the first team since nineteen o eight to hit four
or more home runs in four straight games. They've got
three right now. They trail the Marlins in the sixth
inning eight to four, but Corey Seger and Max Munsey
have hit home runs in that sixth inning, the second
and third of the game. So the Dodgers closing in

(01:52:32):
on possible history. They've got three more innings to try
to accomplish that. I mean, they already won fifteen to
one and nine to one. I mean, this is a
team that has scored was it, twenty three runs in
their last three games, counting the nine three win over
the d Backs. So they definitely have the offense to
come back hit another home run or two. We'll keep

(01:52:52):
an eyeing. Marlin CEO Derek Jeter says the team is
not decided what they will do with manager Don Manning Lely,
who was in the final year of his four your contract,
that means you won't be black, right Yeah. I wouldn't
want to be back either. That man is kind of
a tough little run of it, right Yeah, But I
mean there's worse place to manage in l A and Miami.

(01:53:13):
And uh, I'm on vacation starting tomorrow morning, so I'll
be gone for about a week. Where are you going going.
I'm going to Las Vegas for a night and then
going back to Wisconsin. Have a little golf competition on
Twitter if people want to check out. We're hitting up
Aaron Hills on Tuesday. Little golf competition on that So yeah,
find me, but I'll see you next week. Long and straight.

(01:53:33):
Keep our fingers crossed. That's Dan Buyer, get out there
and pressed. That was the press, all right, legit excited. Tonight,
we will see Aaron Rodgers play some football. Uh, we'll
We'll likely see more Sam Donald, Kyler Murray, Um, the
Jaguars with Nick Foles, welcome in Carson Wentz who we'll see,

(01:53:54):
and the Raiders taken on Kyler Murray. Should be good night.
Will will report back tomorrow what we see, what's interesting,
what's not? Only The Do Gotlip Show only on Fox
