(00:21):
you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. Welcome into Friday's podcast.
I'll give you my thoughts on Kyler Murray struggling in
his second preseason starting why the Cardinals are starting to run?
Remind me of a bad infomercial? Plus, have we forgotten
how good? Carson Wants is also former NFL scout John Middlecoff,
NFL analyst Matt Miller, and three time Super Bowl champion
(00:42):
stink Mark Schlais. Let's go Boom Up America. Doug Gottlieb Show,

Farmers dot com. Are so the Oaklean aid is look
(01:07):
good last night? Or did they all right? There is
a yin and a yang. We have injury updates for you.
My Chargers Derwin James out stress fracture. What does that
mean for the Lightning Bolts? Will get to that. Just
another preseason injury for the Chargers San Diego, l A.
Doesn't matter. They seem to have terrible, terrible luck. But
(01:30):
we had a bunch of preseason games and I got
thoughts on well most of them, because I've watched a
lot of football and they're still football being played. We're
gonna talk with John Middlecoff upcoming in fifteen minutes on
what he saw from last night. Matt Miller will join us,
will talk some. Carson Wentz and Mark Schlaith will join us.
(01:54):
Have you ever wondered? Have you ever wondered why teams
don't just know all out on the college thing? Like
when r G three first came to be with the Redskins.
This is the year they made the play the first
year you know they made the playoffs. Of course he
got hurt towards a c L Remember that the reason
(02:18):
he was successful was that Kyle Shanahan, the offensive savant
that he is. Ditched his own playbook to try and
incorporate a lot of the things that made Robert Griffin
the third successful at Baylor. In addition to multiple knee injuries,
he towards a c L in college, as well as
tearing it at the end of his first year in
(02:39):
the playoff game where everybody seemed to know it was
hurt UNTI. Ultimately ah, he went down in a heap. Now,
injuries ultimately changed r G three. But the biggest thing
is that Robert Griffin the third could never be a
true pro style quarterback. And you start to wonder, why
are they making Deshaun Watson a true pro style quarterback.
(03:00):
Why don't they run nearly as much of the college
stuff with Russell Wilson. It's why we told you and
we'll talk some raven football that in order for Lamar Jackson,
in order for Lamar Jackson to become a consistent starter
in the NFL, he's got to throw the football that
(03:20):
the college stuff, the zone read. It works, but people adjust,
and once they adjust, they point out your weakness. The
air raid offense. This is the offense that Mike Leach
had he was at Kentucky, he brought the forward pass
(03:41):
or actually the lateral pass really to the SEC. Steve
Spurrier before him brought the forward pass to the SEC.
And the reason it was successful was at Kentucky, you're
not going to have the top level offensive lineman to
block the defensive lineman the SEC. But you can get
some diminutive beatsters outside the numbers, and you get it
(04:03):
to a guy in space, and now all of a sudden,
you give it yourself a chance to win your one
or two positive matchups in eleven on eleven or eleven
on ten on eleven, which is what it is. Unless
you have a running quarterback, you kind of have no
chance at Kentucky if you do it legit. This is
the same reason that you'll only see Service academies for
(04:25):
the most part, and maybe Georgia Tech when Paul Johnson
was still there coach, you'd only see them run the option.
Why Because it's an offense designed for when you have
inferior talent to shorten the game, or change the matchups,
or or or or be different than anyone else's style,
(04:48):
and it allows the inferior talented team to compete on
some levels on an even playing field with the more
talented team Princeton offense in basketball um as well as
teams that run press and just shoot crazy threes. That's
really what Texas Tech did with the air raid offense.
(05:10):
Remember Mike Leach was really really good, but he never
won the Back twelve. He's never won the Big twelve.
A matter of fact, if you ask people at Oklahoma,
remember they didn't win the national championship. Bob stoops first
year was his second year, and they believe they want
it because, among other things, Mike Leach installed the offense.
(05:32):
But he left because Leach was so prone to throw
the football with these little dink and dunk screens and
throwing the ball Laterally. When you get to the National
Football League, it's a completely different game. Everybody can run,
everybody can cover in space, and there just aren't the
(05:52):
mismatches with wide receivers on cornerbacks or even wide receivers,
you know, because they won't use a tight end, so
it gives you a wide receiver on a linebacker. Du
The linebackers can really run, the safeties can really run.
Do you know why they're in the National Football League?
In college football, there's eighty five scholarships, and when you're
(06:15):
in the Pack twelve or the Big twelve, there's a
distinct difference between their best cover corner and a linebacker
trying to cover an undersized wide receiver or a safety.
And that's what this offense is about. In addition to
which it's an offense that doesn't really try and block
you with special schemes. They try and spread you out
(06:39):
and hold up man and man as quickly as possible. Again,
that works at times in college, but not when everyone
in the National Football League can simply beat their man.
And it's essentially like a screen pass without trying to
be a screen pass every time. For Kyler Murray, I
(07:00):
believe that if the air raid offense, if Kyler Murray,
if Cliff Kingsbury's ever going to work, this is the
best place. Okay, this is the best place because it's indoors.
That's important. It's a team and organization fully committed to
seeing it through. They do have good skill position players
(07:22):
like a David Johnson, like Larry Fitzgerald, like a Christian
Kirk like. They do have guys that can make some
plays in space, and the coach and the quarterback have
a relationship that spans six seven years back to when
he's in high school. The coach knows the system, he's
played in the system, he knows Kyler Murray, he's coached
against Kyler Murray. Like, all of those things are good.
(07:42):
But don't you think there's a reason in the hundred
years of football that no one's ever done this? Here?
Steve Kim, the Arizona Cardinals general manager, earlier today, Listen,
I have a tremendous amount of confidence and event a quarterback,
he has a supreme amount of confidence, and for him
to have a night like that last night is really
(08:03):
to me, what you want sometimes early on is to
see different looks, to see the different pressures, and to
go through some growing pains. Okay, that sounds good. It
feels like the Kyler Murray experiment is nothing more than
a classic infomercial. Does your NFL team suck? Are they
boring and almost unwatchable? Do you wish you could score
(08:25):
more points? If you're looking to make your team fun, exciting,
and electrify, we have exactly what you're looking for. For
the low low price of the number one overall draft pick,
your team could have Heisman Trophy winner Kayler Murray. He's fast,
he's fun, and he's just what your team is missing.
Now you might be asking yourself, isn't the only five ten?
(08:46):
But it doesn't matter when you can do this. Texas
leads thirty one Murray, he's gonna run it himselves. Skips
out of side left, he's got a room. Thirty four
forty five mid field, fifty down the side Peole go
ten track walk that was electric, sixty seven yard run
by Kyler Murray called eight hundred five five five fifty nine.
(09:11):
Now to get your very bone, Kyler Murray. Plus, if
you call in the next five minutes, we'll give you
a Cliff Kingsbury head coach, absolutely free. That's right, your
own head coach in air raid offense, absolutely free if
you call in the next five minutes. Kyler Murray doesn't
come with offensive line men who get blocked or a
defense who can get a stop. Side effects may include
(09:31):
your team getting too much hot, making the Raiders look
like a good football team, and everyone getting fired before
the end of the season. Gay work from the staff
Doug Gottlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. It feels
a little cheesy. It's like a wrong co product, right
it's the answer. Uh, college offenses are the way. Yeah,
(09:54):
he's a little small, but good things come in small packages.
Or maybe there's a reason that five quarter backs aren't
drafted number one. Overall, you know, we're trusting Steve Kim,
who twelve months before said trust me. Josh Rosen is
the guy. He fired his coach, he fired two offensive coordinators.
Like what leads you to believe that Steve Kime's level
(10:16):
of confidence and competence isn't very much in question. I'm
not saying it's over. I actually think it's got a
chance of working out. But there's a reason that people
haven't gone full aird. Be sure to catch live edition.
So the Doug Got Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern
three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
(10:37):
Heart Radio app. Doug Got Leap Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Man, I got a good staff. Uh you
missed that infomercial. We'll tweet it out and we'll we'll
put it out on I G as well. Doug Got
Leap Show. Did you um, you guys watch at all?
We're watching Gardner Minshew of course played for Mike Leach
(10:58):
last year. He got slobber knocked in Game one actually
looked pretty good here yesterday as a backup quarterback I
was watching. It is just kind of interesting to me.
You know, the Jaguars took on the Eagles last night
and before the game, Carson Wentz went over and shook
hands with his his former backup Nick Foles won the
(11:18):
Super Bowl. Now I know Nick Foles because I played
basketball with him. He lives near me in the off season.
And Nick Foles is a good six five maybe six six,
and he's a bigger dude, right And I'm telling you,
Carson Wentz looked like he's two inches taller than him,
just looks bigger, like Carson Wentz is a big athletic dude.
(11:39):
We'll get to Wentz. I want to get to Lamar Jackson, um,
but I want to start with what we saw last
night in Arizona as the Raiders eviscerated the Cardinals, and
we know the Cardinals have no defense. Stopped me if
you heard this before, But Cliff Kingsbury's team has no defense,
and it's made worse by the fact that they're not
having long sustained drives. But man, that was not a
(12:01):
strong look. So John Middlekoff joins US former NFL scout.
If you want to download a great podcast, go the
Herd podcast Network. You can get one of the following.
Colin has his own special pod. And then there's uh
inside the Parker that's Rob Parker's that that's in regards
to baseball. Mine is called all ball, All basketball, all
the time. Sean Farnham, broadcaster, ESPN, former U C. L A.
(12:25):
Walk On who became a captain join me this week.
And then the football one is John middle Koff's. It's
called three and out and middle Koff thanks so much
for joining us. I know you watched the Raiders a ton,
but I couldn't help but watch the Cardinals and point out, hey,
that's why the college offense thing, that's why the air
(12:45):
raid thing, where hey, we're just gonna wide splits man
and man, you know, try and get the ball out
quick to a guy in space. That's the flow. Was
the flaw to the offense and why it hasn't been
fully installed by the NFL team exposed My biggest issue,
my biggest issue, Doug, with the offense just overall is
not necessarily what we saw last night. It's definitely gonna
(13:08):
have its problems. I mean, the Cardinals by itself, just
whatever offense you were gonna run might have the worst
offensive line in the league. So I mean Kyle Shanahan,
Andy Reid could be running the offense. It would look
bad to me. It's a fundamental problem that on short
yard and situations or goal line situations, Cliff Kingsbury wouldn't
put the quarterback under center and run power just a
(13:30):
staple of a physical offense in short yards if his
life depended on it. Chip was the same way. And
it's why I have such respect and admiration for Lincoln Riley.
You've probably seen him do this over the years. He
can get in the position and if he has to,
we did it with Baker Mayfield, put him under center
and just kind of run some plays where Cliff is
all those gun runs and the gun run ultimately is
(13:51):
a soft run. And at the end of the day,
to me, in practice, what what's what's what's what's a
gun run? What's that? Explain? Just just obviously last night
you watch Kyler Murray, He's in the shotgun and David
Johnson is either to his left or to his right.
That's the only way they can run. Where if you
watch you know Philip Rivers and the Chargers. If Melvin
(14:11):
Gordon's there and J. J. Watts brothers there, they're in
an eye formation and they can run normal place. Now
they can also run out of the gun, right Philip
can be a shotgun. Melvin Gordon could be right next
to him Rackler and hand it off. They can't do that.
They can only run one style, and it's just they
don't have good enough players. That's the other problem is
we know how physical Seattle is. Aaron Donald by himself
(14:34):
could kill that old line and the Niners have a
bunch of bodies now it could be tough and plus Doug.
Here's the other thing. Vance Joseph. He seems like a
nice guy, but he's been a defensive coordinator. In one
year in Miami, they were terrible. Denver was dominant. They
fell off a cliff when he got there, and Arizona
is gonna be awful. Maybe he's just not a coordinator either.
Maybe he's just a bad defensive coach, maybe just a
(14:56):
position coach. Some some guys are that that's what he was.
When he was in college. You used at Okama, Stadius
and other places. He was a good position coach, but
like coordinator, they looked terrible. Like I felt like I
could pick out a team that'd be terrible every year.
I remember two years I think it was two years ago,
maybe the Colts. I was like, man, the Colts are bad. Yeah,
(15:16):
it was two years ago. The Colts are so bad.
And they remember they started the year with with Jim
Sergey at quarterback. I watched him against the Cowboys in
a preseason game, like the second or third. I was like,
they have no chance. They just a complete personnel mismatch.
What about the Raiders? Was their growth yesterday? Why? I
think the good thing is that the Raiders have been
(15:38):
one of the more talked about teams, obviously on hard knocks,
just all the weird stuff going on. They show up
to that game and at the end of the day,
they have NFL players Derek Carr, Tyrone Williams, their first
round running back, just run circles around everyone and Gruden.
I mean, I'm glad he pulled him out after you know,
one series, but you know, could he have dropped you know,
(15:59):
three straight drives and just boom boom boom touchdown with
car to get him some confidence? Uh? Yeah, I mean
they if they are gonna be competitive, they would have
to have an elite offense, and they do have some pieces.
Tyroll Williams a really good player. They got Ryan Grant, Hunter,
renfro the little you know, he's not little, but the
rookie running back is a good player. They have good
(16:19):
backup running backs, they have good offensive line, and if
Derek can just get back to some of that two
thousand six team mojo, they should be able to score
some points. Now, their defense isn't gonna look that good,
but their dB group is actually not bad. LaMarcus Joyner
is a good player. Garyan Conley their first round pick
from a couple of years ago, as a pretty good player.
They just got a lot of bodies back there. So
(16:39):
if their D line could just be functional, which on
paper it's pretty bad, but so you gotta take last
night with a grain of salt, maybe they won't be
quite as bad as you think, just because they will
be able to score some points if Antonio is fine
and shows up. Are you as high on Sam Donald
as others? Yeah? I mean, I just it been on
(17:00):
this morning. When I got up that first drive, he
looked he looks like a bigger more powerful romo, just
kind of freelancing making these sweet throws. He you know,
he's so young, so he's a little smoother than the
Romo I think we remember in his mid thirties. But
he's just there's something special when you watch him. His
best throw last night and Daniel Jeremiah tweeted it out today,
(17:23):
was a ball that was incomplete. He kind of scrambled around.
He hit this dude in the back of the end zone.
It hit his hand, he didn't catch it, but it
was just like WHOA. And I've always I've liked Adam Gates.
I get he's a little weird. The Athletic had a
long piece on him last week. I don't know if
you've read a Doug it's really good just about Gates
and just his quirks, and you know, Peyton Manning swears
by him. It might be a you know, a match
(17:45):
made in Heaven with those two. Okay, what about Lamar Jackson.
I know he had the spectacular run, but he seemed
to struggle at times in terms of throwing the football.
Where are you on Lamar Jackson? Yeah, I haven't watched
Beside the one highlight run. That's the only thing I've
seen and I think people just naturally, oh my god
like that that we should not celebrate that. Now, in
(18:07):
the regular season, that's a big deal, But in the
preseason he's gonna have to throw for them to win.
We we know he can run around. That's the special
quality that he has. He's pretty special. I'd also say
on that run where he made the crazy juke move
and kind of went by the guy like if that's
Luke Keickley or that's Earl Thomas, like you might, I
guess Earl's on his team, but you know what I'm saying,
(18:29):
you might get killed. That's that's the problem with running
around like that, and his greatest strength. It's his confidence
in his athletic ability in space. That also makes you,
I don't know if naive is the right word to it,
but not really worry about it because in his life
he hasn't got hit that hard. Well, there are some
people in the NFL that can catch you or can
(18:50):
get an angle that you think you got him, and
you can get hurt. That was one thing Kaepernick in
his peak, was always really good at. He was underrated
just going out of bounce. He was never trying to
run over guys or go cut back in. He'd always
get to the out of bound line. He never really
took that many shots Lamar style. He turns into like
a skill guy. You know. He runs forward not laterally,
(19:13):
which is cool, But I can't afford, if I'm John Harbaugh,
for him to get killed. But I did see ment
or not mint you but Trace McSorley, their backup had
a sweet touchdown brow beautiful throw on a crossing route,
but it was give was cover zero. Yes, Well, look,
I think that's what you have to do if you're
(19:34):
gonna play this style, right, like get to college quarterbacks
to be backups, you know, and like get those and
I don't. I don't think our G three is that
guy anymore because because he's had so many injuries, he's
so much older now. But not even wonder. I wonder
if beats him out. You know, I wouldn't, but you can.
You can find those type of guys more on the street,
(19:55):
you know, And and so I wouldn't. And you know,
he might be able to get a guy to be
your third quarterback who can you can use elsewhere? Um
kind of like the Saints obviously do a little bit
with their with their third quarterback with Taysom Hill. So um,
I think it's a it's a fascinating kind of idea.
All right. I saw Carson Wentz shake hands with Nick Foles,
(20:16):
and I was like, I had forgotten how big, how strong,
how athletic he is is. The the struggles with injuries
the past two years, has that taken America away from
how good this kid can be? You're really quick on
Nick Foles. I heard you mentioned you play hosts with him.
I'm pretty sure I was in Philly when we drafted him.
He was recruited by Izzo. I don't know how serious
(20:37):
it got, but he was a legitimate high school basketball player. No,
he can play. He can he can really do No,
but he can really shoot. He knows how to play. Yeah,
he can play, Yeah Wentz. I think the craziest thing
about Wentz is most of America, because of where he
played college football, we didn't quite grasp what he was
until we immediately saw him in the NFL, and even
(20:59):
that rook year, You're like, WHOA, this guy is enormous.
He was like a young band because he could move,
but he also just had this enormous arm. But he
was pretty raw and then by the time his second
year is like, jeez, this guy's the MVP of the league.
And I do think it's just a little out of sight,
out of mind. Also that last year he just didn't
play that well. And I think we too often do
(21:22):
this is with a c L injuries, And I mean
we're doing it right now on the Bear with Clay
Thompson's because Clay everything that goes viral, he just running
around like he just had his a c L surgery
and he might just be a robot, like he's just unaffected.
But we I've seen it with Jerick McKinnon with the Niners,
like his knee keeps swelling up. He just he might
never be the same. You know, it is everybody thinks
(21:43):
that Adrian Peterson is the North Adrian Peterson is the
ultimate outlier right Like he's in his thirties going for
a thousand yards rushing. He's just different than any other.
That's why he was able to come off the a
c L and play the next year and be the
m v P. Do you remember, like when you were
playing college basketball, if someone in basketball or football tour
their A c L, wasn't it viewed as like a
(22:03):
borderline career ender. No open, it was. It was. It
was in many ways what it is now, which is
you come now, you come back a little quicker. But
it was generally out for a year and most people
thought that next year. You're still getting kind of used
to it in confidence. You weren't the same guy really
for two years, and so I kind of what kind
of what the Achilles is viewed at now? Yeah case yeah, yeah,
(22:28):
And I think we jumped the sharks sometimes on like
he's a he's a massive human. He tore his a
c L. He also is not coming from Alabama USC Like,
this is a pretty big transition for him. I mean
it's a big transition for Peyton man. You talk you
listen to you talked to Rivers. Those guys are constantly
learning and evolving and growing. So that's why all these
smart people are really high on him. He has a
(22:51):
coach who has proven that he's really good and can
call the offense as his head coach, which is pretty special.
So they definitely have the weapons. I was pretty side
and I flipped on the game this morning. I'm like,
I want to watch the first drive of Winston Folds
and then you realized quickly, like, yeah, there, neither of
them are playing, and you know what, they're probably glad
they didn't play Wentz because their first round uh offensive tackle,
(23:12):
the kid from Washington State Dillard clearly screwed up and
got Cody Kessler to destroy that. You could have put
Wins in there. That's him. Uh what about Dayne Haskins.
Everybody think is gonna go gaga over the touchdown pass,
which is a good one, but he also was sacked
three times. People talk about his lack of awareness and
and foot speed and you know, just okay, outside of it,
(23:34):
where are you on Haskins right now? Yeah? I was
never that big of a fan. I knew the stats
were great. The people that I really leaned on in
the league they were really lukewarm on him. Uh, And
I get there's just gonna be so much pressure even
if they start with case Keenum that you might as
well see the guy you draft in the first round
the Redskins roster. Now, if Trent Williams, you know that
(23:56):
he's a big wild card and he's the best player
in the team, but their defense is pretty good. They
drafted the kid from l s U a year ago
that tours a c L. You still have Chris Thompson.
I think Jake Gruden is a pretty good coach. If
their quarterback play could just I mean, if they still
had Alex Smith, I think they would be solid. They're
big question mark is can Dawayne function because we know,
(24:16):
like you said, you flip on a play just in
a preseason game and he's like, where's the what's he doing?
And in fairness, he's only a one year starter in college.
This is this is a massive transition for him. So
my guest is case Kingdom starts, he doesn't look great,
and the owner makes him put in the young kid,
and it's just probably their record is not going to
be as good as actually their roster, which they're talked
(24:38):
about like a crappy team, And I'm telling you their
their roster is not as bad as people think. John
Minelkoff joining US three and out is the podcast All
Football on the Heard podcast network. Um, all right, Durwin
James is gonna be out for an undetermined amount of time.
He's got a stress fracture in his foot. It's gonna
depend on surgery how long he's out. And this is
(24:58):
a spectacular and some people's defensive Rookie of the Year
last year. How does this affect the Chargers. It's a
major blow, man. I mean that's you look on Twitter,
you have to do a double take. You like, not
that Derwin James, and you realize that they had joint
practice the last couple of days right with the Saints.
So that's you know, sometimes in those joint practices. I'm
(25:18):
not trying to blame it on anyone. It's just freak
gets football. But you know, you're just a little more physical,
maybe you're not used to, like in practice, you know,
an angle on a guy. I haven't read how it happened,
but I'd imagine it was a you know, some team
period foot gets stepped on, someone falls, and you're just
you know, there's just different bodies that you're not used
to the previous couple of weeks. I'm sure Talasco's I mean,
(25:39):
that's I don't know if he's the best player on
their team. Obviously, Rivers is probably the most important player
in their team. But damn, I mean, you thought you
saw last year. You didn't just think like this is
a this is a Pro Bowl level guy. You're like,
this guy's got a chance to be a transcendent talent. Right.
He could cover the tight end, he could play the
run cold, if you got into a pinch, you could
play corner. He could play like a linebacker. There's really
(25:59):
he the ultimate hybrid of the player everyone's looking for
in two thousand nineteen. And I thought he kind of
went his emergence when it was clear that he was good.
They kind of went to another level. So did he?
You know, I know Trent Taylor with the Niners had
a broken bone and they think it's like four weeks.
To me, there's a big difference. It's like a four
week injury and obviously we don't know or is it like,
(26:20):
you know, an eight week injury and then we and
then we gotta slowly put them back. That's because it
could be you know, are we talking late October before
he's coming back or as he start practicing by the
end of September. That's there's a big difference there. Yeah,
I think it depends on It depends on surgery, how
bad it is yea, and what happened do they need
to put in a plate? What what ultimately becomes a
jeneveon Clowney Bill O'Brien played this thing so terribly, And
(26:44):
this is what happens sometimes. I think when you let
coaches run the personnel, they just don't have a great
idea of value and trades and even the rules. You
can't I didn't quite realize this till the other day.
No one's gonna like if I traded from Van Gordon
in theory, I could extend him. You can't do that.
You can't, I I know, so, so I can't give Now.
(27:08):
If I could win your rental for like a six
round pick, yeah, but I'm not giving up anything higher
than like a third. You know. I don't even think
i'd give a third because what if he leaves, you know,
or what if it goes poorly and he gets hurt
and then I don't want him. I I just wasted
a pick, because usually if you're gonna trade for a
player of this Magnets. Look at what Andy read. The
Chiefs did. They had DeFord. They did the same thing.
(27:29):
They but they traded him so they could then make
another move. The Texans are kind of stuck in Noman's land.
He knows they don't want to pay him. Now. He
knows that other teams can't pay him just you had
to do this trade during free agency. It would have
been so easy. You could have easily traded him, even
if it was getting less than you wanted, even if
it was a second round pick and maybe a player
(27:51):
you'd have value right now to show for it. Now
you're getting a guy remember his last year's South Carolina.
He mailed it in And I wouldn't necessarily blame him.
Now he's not gonna get mac money, but he still
would get probably hit the open market seventy five million
dollars and guaranteed. Why would he play all out for
you when he knows his payday is not coming from
you and it's coming from someone else after the end
(28:13):
of the year. I think it's a bad spot to
put clowne in. Yeah, So anyway, does he does he
ultimately play? Yeah? I mean I think he. I'd be
shocked if he doesn't, because at the end of the day,
it's still a lot of money. I think the numbers
right around fifteen millions. It really is. Looking back, it's
one of the craziest things that Levi on Bell left
fourteen and a half million dollars. I would understood if
(28:34):
you know he left two million dollars or something on
the table fourteen and a half million dollars. So I
just don't know many humans that are leaving fifteen million
on the table. Now, Clowney was the number one overall pick.
Unlike though, has made I think, you know, I would
guess twenty five to thirty million dollars already. I think
I actually looked at the number. Maybe it's like thirty
(28:55):
three and then at the end of this year would
be close to fifty if he did play on this
fifteen and half of whatever the number is. So he
it's not like he's been making six k for four
five straight years, so he has banks of money. So
if he hasn't been an idiot with it, it's not
inconceivable that you just go screw you. I'm not playing
his contract. I believe four years, twenty two million and
(29:19):
then so last year he played on the is he
on the city? He's on the franchise tag right now? Yeah?
Last year was the fifth year option. Is uh? His
let's see here, is uh? He made eleven point three
five two three and then U thirteen last year, so
he's banked a decent amount of cash. Yeah, yeah, I
(29:42):
mean you're sitting on you know, million dollars. I guess
with no state income tax. I'm just like, you gotta
walk away, You like you're gonna walk away from that money,
Like that's a lot of money. Yeah, it's it's it's ballsy.
But also if if you wanted to make the counter,
if you were his agent, you go, well, if you
who have a catastrophic injury, you will get the fifteen million,
(30:03):
But that's seventy five if in theory you just hold
out being if you just pull a Levian Bell, unlike Levian,
who we know was never going to get that much.
That's why it was a dumb thing. We know someone
would pay a defensive end who is really talented. Now
he's not mac Ordonald, but he's pretty damn good a
lot of cash if he hit the open market. He's
made thirty five his entire career, so he does have
(30:25):
he has banked a lot more cash, but he would
be at fifty one five at the end of this
year because the lot of the yeah, the franchise is
basically six tea minus five point nine six seven million dollars. Anyway,
great stuff. I think he comes back. I do, I do,
But I do. I I agree with you completely, like
this is. It's kind of amazing. It's kind of amazing
(30:46):
that here the here, the Texans are. They won more
games than the Cowboys, bigger market than the Cowboys, they have, frankly,
a better young quarterback than the Cowboys. They got a
better wide receiver than the Cowboys. Yet no one's talking
about how massively mismanaged their front office has been with
no general manager, you know, basically a third round pick
for Duke Johnson and now they have Clowne who they
can't trade, and they don't want to coach the coach.
(31:09):
I like Billy Oh as a coach, but man, he's
a control freak and he's not good with the personnel stuff. Nope, Nope,
great stuff. Man, Thanks for joining us later. That's a

We try and find something you can make money on.
That's why we call it. Oh yeah, do you want
to bet? I'm again? I did this yesterday. Obviously, Derwin
James gets hurt. That hurts my Chargers minus three. Take
(31:51):
the Chargers all day against the Colts, who haven't seen
Andrew Luck practice UH live yet. But I would go
the opposite way with the Patriots taking on the Pittsburgh Steelers.
I understand that at the end of the day, the
Patriots won the Super Bowl, but do we not remember
how last season actually went? Right? I feel like the
(32:16):
Steelers are just a better overall football team than they
were last year, much more cohesive. They know who the
running back is and who start uh wide receiver is.
I think their defense is nasty. And it's not that
I think the Patriots are gonna be bad, but I'm
also reasonable to point out the Patriots aren't usually good
early in the season, still searching for wide receiving help,
(32:39):
still replacing Rob Gronkowski, The defense takes usually five or
six weeks to figure it out, and the Steelers are
ready to go six points six. That's a lot I
don't like. I love the Pittsburgh Steelers Week one of
the season plus get on it now, won't bet. Really,
(33:07):
the NFL loves to make things complicated. I'll explain next

You talk. I know it should have been like a
seven or eight minute, maybe ten minute interview. It ends
(34:11):
up going like, yes, we're just football bros talking football anyway,
nothing wrong with that at all. Well, he brought up
one head coach in the National Football League, J Gruden,
So we'll start there. Could be in for an interesting
season with a fishing and Doug. Last night we saw
a questionable passeng interference call. Redskins were called for offensive
p I. Head coach j Gruen challenged it and the
(34:32):
call was upheld. But from the TV views that looked
like a blown call earlier to the NFL officials twitter
account Twitter Dot a video and an explanation, and the
p I call wasn't caught by TV cameras because it
happened earlier in the play where the receiver was pushed off. So,
with all that being said, Doug, with the reviewable passe
interference rule change proved to be a bigger disaster than
(34:56):
catch versus no catch from a couple of seasons ago. Yes,
it will. Um, I actually said this this scenario, Ryan Music,
is this exactly what I said would happen. That's correct.
You talked about, um, if it becomes reviewable, when exactly
are they're going to At which point during the play
(35:17):
will it become reviewable? And and the thing is a
lot of these past interferences are like that play where
the offensive player pushes and creates space and then the
defensive player at the end of the play closes up
the space and that's why they get called for p I.
H the p I. It's it's almost double p I, right,
you call it on either or both. And this is
(35:38):
the exact scenario that I thought would happen, and it's
gonna be interesting to see how they how they adjust.
I was gonna say maybe, I mean, the only two
broadcasts that have the over the head cam view like
a Madden view would be NBC and ESPN, So those
are the only ones that probably would be able to
capture that kind of illegal contact, not CBS and certainly
(35:58):
not Fox. Just yet we moved from that to obviously
the NFC. Lots of things going on there. I thought
we're gonna see Aaron Rodgers and Matt Lafleur's offense for
the first time last night. That did not happen. Rogers
was held out due to a sore back. Uh doug.
Aaron Rodgers making through the entire season without missing a
game due to an injury. Yes, he will miss the
(36:20):
he will not miss a single game. He will play
the entire year. Uh sore back or whatever. And I like,
I know, Aaron's not a big guy. I think it's
one of the reasons that he threw the ball away
so much last year, but I think and he of course,
you had any injury or old in this season. But
I'm guessing this year the Packers are really good, and
in order for them to be really good, he's got
to be healthy the whole year. I think he's healthy
(36:41):
the whole year. Played all sixteen games last season, Packers
were six nine and one. We go from the Pack
to the New York Giants to take on the Chicago
Barris Tonight, Doug Well Daniel Jones have another impressive performance
with the Giants in a second preseason game. Or will
he struggle like we saw last night with Kyler Murray
out of Arizona. I think he'll be fine. I think
(37:04):
it'll be fine. He's not gonna be playing against the
number ones. He'll be playing against the twos and threes.
And I think they'll continue to put him in situations
where he can be successful. Be fine, He'll be a
bright I need a winner here. I need a winner.
I need a winner who's gonna throw more touchdown passes
out of the second year quarterbacks Baker Mayfield, Sam Donald,
(37:26):
Mark Jackson or out of Buffalo Josh Allen Well. I
think it's it's it's Mayfield or Donald. I'm gonna go Donald.
And and here's why they're No, he's gonna football team.
And when you're not as gonna football team, you throw
the ball by Ton and I And even though he
does not have the weapons, they're just gonna have to
throw the tongues. They'll be behind most of the time.
(37:48):
Whereas I do think Cleveland has a very good running game,
and I think that will limit some of the some
of the throws, even if obviously there's better talent to
throw two last one before we get out of here.

(38:57):
gave you my bet of the day, my own that
was Hey, Steelers minus six at the Patriots to start
the season. Patriots slow starters. They really used the first
four games as extended preseason. Steelers completely motivated to prove
that they're a better cohesive unit without Antonio Brown and
(39:17):
the mess that was Levy on Bell's exit. Have we
forgotten that the Steelers were a whisker away from making
the playoffs and even last year they are solid at
running back their quarterback through for five thousand yards, the
defense pretty good. Meanwhile, the Patriots continue to search for
a wide receiver. Julian Edelman has got the thumb problem.
(39:38):
They haven't replaced Rob Gronkowski, and it's early in the
year when the defense still has to figure it out.
Have we forgotten? Right? We kind of forget about Bryce
Harper did you guys see the monster home run the
Bryce Harper hit at the walk off last night against
Chicago Cubs. I don't think that ball has landed yet.
(40:00):
Like we get so caught up in Bryce Harper and
the salary and Bryce Harper in the early season struggles
that we may have have missed. Bryce Harper can still
hit the hell out of the baseball. I know we
have forgotten Mike Trout. How many home runs of Mike
Trout have You know what the date is? The date
is August Okay, so with a month and a half
(40:23):
left ago in the season, Mike Trout has forty four
zero forty home runs. Party, you get a lot of
you guys are like really, really, really really, you know,
this is a guy. And remember he missed a couple
he went through, He missed like five games. He always missed.
Seems to miss a couple with it, with an injury
(40:43):
here or an injury there. But Mike Trout forty home runs.
That's insane. Also, by the way, I had four hits
on the night. But we seem to have forgotten. We
get caught up in the stats, or caught up in
the money, or caught up in the Pennant races and
sometimes we forget, Oh yeah, Mike trop best player in baseball,
(41:07):
having a having an incredible season. I mean, think about it.
Right now, he has a one hits forty home runs
is O b PST four, his OPS is one one nine.
That's a wow. It leads the league in home runs
hundred sixteen games. We got about forty left forty left
(41:31):
sixties not likely fifty is. That's an incredible season. And
then this is the most he's ever hit, is forty
one in a year. So he's as good or better
than he's ever been. And for the fourth straight year
he's leading the league in O B P and third
traight year leading in OPS. And this will be the
fifth straight year that will lead in ops. Plus how
(41:53):
have we forgotten how nasty Mike Trout is? And maybe
the biggest have we forgotten this? Carson Wentz didn't play
last night, didn't play last night, but I was I
was watching him shake hands with Nick Foles and Nick
Foles a good player, you know in some limited instances
(42:15):
nick Foles at times EA show and he can win
a Super Bowl, right, But there's a reason that in
spite of the fact that the past two seasons have
been marred by injuries, and he's only played three years
in the NFL. That Carson Wentz was the guy chosen
and re chosen. Remember Nick Foles. They could have held
(42:38):
onto him, he's a free agent. They could have held
on him. And instead they not only kept Carson Wentz,
but they redid Carson Wentz's deal extended it in the
off season. They didn't have to, they just knew. And
here's why. The year he tore his a c L right,
(42:59):
he started the thirteen games of the year, they won
eleven of them. They won eleven of them. His QBR
at the time of injury was leading the league with
seventy seven point two in only thirteen games as a
second year player, he threw for three thousand yards. And
while last year he's only five and six as a
starter and people would say he had a disappointing year,
(43:22):
in eleven games, he threw for three thousand yards. That's
pretty craziest. I mean, think about we're talking about how
much money you're gonna pay to Dak Prescott, and the
reason is because of the contract that Carson Wentz got.
He's bigger, he's stronger, he's more accurate, and he's an
equally adept runner. A matter of fact, they want him
(43:44):
to run less, not more. For Dak Prescott, who rarely
throws for more than three hundred yards, Carson Wentz through
for three hundred yards in three of the first five
games he started last year, and that was coming off
of an injury. We seem to have forgotten then in
the second year of the NFL, before he tore his
(44:04):
A c L, he was going to be the league's MVP.
But instead we got caught up in Philly Special and
in the Nick Fole story, which was great, especially after
you know, like the second playoff game he started, we
get caught up in a lot of you know, where
should Nick Foles go? And boy, he's got Carson Wentz
(44:25):
has got a lot of injuries. But unlike what I
talked about with DeMarcus Cousins and Kevin Durant, where DeMarcus
Cousins has all these injuries all on the same leg,
right achilles tendon, blown quad, a c L all his
left leg. The same can be said for Kevin Durant
broken foot, torn achilles tendon, right leg, calf calf injuries
(44:47):
all right leg, right Carson Wentz. It was torn a
c L because he was hit, and then a broken
bone in his back again because he was hit. That's
not being injury prone. That's your body bending and occasionally
breaking and surgeons fixing you back up. So I just
(45:09):
feel like we've somehow forgotten Carson Wentz is nasty. The again,
the year that he got hurt, only thirteen games in,
he had thrown for thirty three touchdown passes, thirty three
touchdown passes and seven interceptions as a second year pro.
(45:29):
That's pretty spectacular stuff. Had a one or one point
nine quarterback rating. Hey, last year he had a one
or two point two quarterback rating. He's not dinking dunk.
Last year seven point seven yards per tempt, eleven point
oh yards per catch. The team wasn't as good. They
had the Super Bowl hangover, he wasn't healthy the whole year,
(45:50):
but it's not like he was bad. Twenty one touchdown,
seven inceptions. And I know we didn't get a chance
to see him last night, but I think phil it
alph Hee should absolutely be one of the favorites to
reach the Super Bowl out of the NFC, and Carson
Wentz is a huge reason why he's still figuring out right.
He's only seven years old, just reaching his prime and
(46:14):
now with a level of comfort. Last year couldn't do
it live until right about the regular season. Now he's
been fully rehab fully ready to go. We talked about
all these other quarterbacks, the older ones, they've actually passed
their prime. Breeze, Rivers, Brady, he even Roethlisberger. Alright, like
(46:38):
you get mid thirties and beyond, you're gonna have some
stinker days. And Roethlisberger has had some stinker days. You
get into your forties. Come on, this dude's creeping up
on his athletic prime. If he's not already there, he
now has all of the different data from the different
styles that he's seen and playing with different body parts.
Hurting dude. Carson Wentz is listed six five I guess
(47:00):
six sixty pounds, and like Mike Trout, people seem to
have forgotten mm hmm. Stuck Gottlive show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Speaking of being on the road, it's never
okay to drive stone you put yourself and others in dangers.
(47:20):
Have been using marijuana in any form, do not get
behind the wheel. I feel different you you drive different,
Drive high and get a d U I paid for
by Nitza. I read this from Matt Miller, who's gonna
join us up coming next. I think people forgot how
special Carson is. One Lion time scout said, it's not
crazy to expect him to be in the same level
as Pat Mahomes as the future of the position. Brady
(47:43):
and Breeze are nearing an end. That's fifteen years we
unless in next fifteen years we could be talking about
Patton Carson. He's that good. Speaking to Matt Miller, will
catch up with him on why the expectations around fans
seem to have lowered. On Wentz, what does he think
about Kyle Murray's performance last night? And how does Derwin
(48:04):
james injury affect the Chargers. We'll get to that next.
Be sure to catch live editions. So the Doug dot
Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three pm Pacific Doug
got Leap Show, Fox Sports Radio. Am I the only
guy that kind of digs preseason football like it's one
of those like guilty pleasures that people are like, No,
(48:24):
I don't. I don't like preseason football. It's not like
I love it. I love I I even love like
the way it's covered, how we can bounce around different games.
I'm not sure ESPN has found their booths of the future.
I would say that, and I like all of those
guys just think. I think Booger is better at the desk.
(48:46):
I really do better at better at the desk. So
Matt Miller joins us in the Doug Got Lip Show
and Bleacher Report. Um, what were you looking for suggestions?
Last on Twitter? Dur over the weekend? You you throw
out some you need suggestions? I don't remember I do.
That's basically my Twitter is um crowds. For CEO, it
was workout music, That's what it was. Yeah, I mean,
(49:07):
can't some good stuff? Okay, So are you going hip hop?
Are you going? What are you doing? You know? I
went with a mix. I went with a decent amount
of hip hop. There's like some Post Malone in there, um,
some Holiz, some Ariana. But then I needed like Rage
against the Machine and Metallica, you know, a C d C.
Get back to the high school warm up tape. So
(49:28):
I feel like, I mean, I feel like it's solid.
It's not there yet. I'm not ready to share it
with the world. But it's getting close. Fair enough, you
wrote this article, and it's interesting. I was thinking the
exact same thing before I read your article. I swear
I was. I was actually watching Wentz shake folds his
hand and they both listed like six five. I looked.
It feels like Wentz is substantially bigger, and I'm like,
(49:50):
why does everybody forgotten like Carson Wentz when he's healthy
is a badass, right, like thirty three touchdowns, seven receptions
in thirteen games. He was going to be the league's
MVP the second year. And it feels like he's not
getting mentioned. Whereas these older quarterbacks that they've been successful,
but they're not as good as they used to be.
They're just not like Peyton, like Tom Brady wasn't great
(50:11):
in the playoffs last year. You can't tell me otherwise
that Drew Brees struggled down the stretch. Umm, I wonder
why we seem to have forgotten him. Yeah, I don't know.
And that was kind of the point of the article,
was like, just because this dude has been hurt, and
I'll tell you, like, I mean, you know how this works.
So the article was like I didn't have a set
and it was like Hey, I'm just gonna write about
(50:31):
Carson Wentz and and you kind of see where we're at.
And the more people I've talked to was like, why
are we forgetting? Like you said, this dude is a badass.
He is. He's athletically everything you want in a quarterback.
He has the physical tools, he has the mental tools,
you have the personality and that that comes in the article.
There's a quote there from somebody's like it could be
Wins and Mahomes as the two quarterbacks. They could be
(50:52):
the next you know, Peyton and Tom, like that could
be the new Manning Brady because these guys are just
so funted. But for it's all, he has to stay healthy.
Matt Miller joins us. He covers the NFL and the
NFL draftford Bleacher Report. Check out his podcast Stick to Football,
and follow him on Twitter at NFL Draft Scout. I
dig preseason football. I just do. I'm like and part
(51:14):
of it is I'm a college football nut. And there's
so many of these guys like Gardner Minshew. I can't
wait to watch him play. You know, you can't wait
to watch um. You know they started to get into
the backup what's his name? The kid from Penn State
playing last night for the Ravens. You're like, like, dude,
I love Trace mcsoil's little, but he can run around
and make some plays, perfect backup for that system. I
(51:36):
take it you're the same. Um, what game did you
watch the most last night? Yeah? I actually watched that
Ravens game the most last night because I'm actually really
interested to see the development of Lamar Jackson. I know
we're not gonna see that in the preseason, right, but
like I want to see I want to see what
he looks like, um, and to see his development. Can
you play from within the um the pocket? You know, what,
(51:59):
what have we've seen him do? And so like that's
kind of what I wanted to see And what do
you see? And what do you see last night? Uh?
What I wanted you know, Like he just didn't look great.
Um as far as you know, being able to step
up in the pocket. Um, I think that's the key,
you know of can can we see that development? And
again I'm not making snap judgments based on the preseason,
(52:21):
but it is something that you worry about just a
little bit, you know. Okay, Well, you know we we
want to see more, you know, from this where you are,
and I would say this, you know, I said the
same thing about Mahomes last year, like, oh god, you
gotta start stepping up with the pocket, dude. You can't
just constantly drift away and expect to make plays because
you have to learn to play in the pocket. So
I think that's where Lamar has to get better too.
(52:42):
I'm not saying it can't. It's just that we haven't
seen it a whole lot yet. I don't think it's likely.
I just don't think that's who he is. And that's
a really hard you know, like, I think you have
better command of the offense. And obviously he's he's getting
back to running more downhill the way he did in college,
is opposed to thought felt like last year. This time
he is running a lot of horizontally, running horizontally, and
(53:02):
he's not that fast and other guys are faster that way.
But I don't I think they start strong. I'm not
sure they finish altogether. That that's strong. Um Okay, So
the Ravens last night. They're an interesting team, a lot
of changes, a lot of personnel changes. Are they any good?
I think they are? And and that's so like That
(53:24):
has been a big question for us on the podcast
All Summers, like some of us think they're good, some
of us like, maybe they're not, but the talent is there.
I think the key is, um you were kind of
mentioned it with more they need a run game, and
so it's okay, is is marketing. I'm gonna be the
run game. Is that going to fix all the problems
that they've had there? Because I think we saw the
Los Angeles Chargers lay out of blueprint last year. You know, like, hey,
(53:45):
this guy's kind of easy to stop. Throw six seven
dbs out there. Make him throw, and we have the
speed to stop Lamar next to his runner. So I
think the big role we also need to see those
young tight ends step up. You know, they spent high
draft picks on Hayden Hurst, on Mark Andrews. Those dudes
have to step up now. Um that was the first
and the third round pick. A lot of the passing
(54:05):
game is gonna go through young guys. Marquis Brown, you're
you know, they don't have a passing threat a past
catcher that really scares you. So I think we can
see a lot of people do this thing. All right,
We're gonna spy the hell out of Lamar Jackson, and
we're gonna stop marking him with seven in the box. Okay, Now,
now you guys got to figure out how you're gonna
throw the ball against us. So we're not gonna get
(54:27):
those clean looks in the preseason, but we're going to
early in the year just because that division they're in
is brutal. The schedule they play is equally brutal. Now,
Week one is the Dolphins, week choose the Cardinals. That's
not gonna be a much right, how about but Week
three's the cheap Week four's the Browns. So we're gonna
know by the quartermark the team is actually good or not.
Doug Gottlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. That's the
(54:49):
voice of Matt Miller, who apparently is at a drive through.
That's what sounds like right now, either that U is
Max Headroom having a little trouble with his uh with
his with his selly. Okay, I watched Kyler Murray last
night and I felt like, oh, this is why nobody
drafts a tiny quarterback and plays all air raid. Right.
It's it's not that there's not air raid concepts, but
(55:12):
no one runs pure air raid because Boyd can be
really hard to block sometimes and you're not getting the
mismatches in space the way you get the college game
with with the air raid offense. Is that ultimately what's
been exposed. Yeah, and I just said it's just something
as simple as a snap. I mean that two ball
starts because he's clapping his hands too early. So I
(55:32):
think there are a lot of issues that just need
ironed out. And like, I want this experiment to work
because I think it will be more fun for guys
like us that cover the league if it's a little
more wide open. But this is kind of what happens
when you have a college, failed college head coach. Mind
you come straight to the NFL after being fired by
his alma mater. You need someone that who says, hey, Cliff,
we can't do that like he you can't just clap
(55:54):
the ball, you know, clap your hands like he's doing,
because that's exaggerating the snap. And there's a reason no
one in the NFL collapse for the snap. No one
does it, So I think that's an issue, Like there,
how do they not know? It? Felt like like yeah,
I don't. You're supposed to have that guy in your
staff who has been there, done it and says, hey,
by the way, you can't can't do that, or you've
(56:15):
had reps, you've had officials come through training camp. I
would hope and you talk about all these things. But
that blew me away last night. And not only that,
I mean, Kyler looks bad last night. You know week one,
it was like he was he was almost too quick
for anything. The defense did last night, like three of
eight and those three weren't weren't that pretty? So um,
I'm excited for for week three, when do we hopefully
(56:36):
get a much bigger picture of what he's gonna look like,
what the actual offense is gonna look like, because I
think what Kingsbury's scheme looks like is for me, it's
one of the more exciting storylines. But you know it's
not just the tired old is Andrew Luck hurt? Like
I want to see if this air RG can work
in the NFL. I do too, I really do, UM,
But I I have a I have an inkling that
(56:59):
as people adjust, there's a reason that they don't, there's
a reason that you don't. And then like their defenses
and abject disaster, which is nothing new for Cliff Kingsbury.
But you know then if you have quick possessions, then
it gets even worse and down out snowballs on you
and you can't just think and dunk all the way
down the field. Chip Kelly again, right, it does like
(57:20):
Oh my god. And then everyone adjusted and you realize
that your defense was on the field more than any
other defense in the league. You're like, oh, actually, this
doesn't work because our defense is too tired. And you
don't have a hundred guys on scholarships where you have
the depth to rotate three different waves on your D line.
You can't do that in the NFL with forty six
guys active on game day. So it's it's gonna be
(57:41):
a pretty stiff adjustment. That's the voice of Matt Miller.
He covers the NFL and the NFL Draft for Bleacher Report.
Check out his podcast Stick to Football, Fall on Twitter
at NFL Draft Scout. Big news the day is Derwin
James and all pros. A rookie is out for an
undetermined amount of time and the stress fractions foot How
does how much does this hurt the Chargers? Oh, it's huge.
I think he's the best safety in football. After one year,
(58:02):
like he's that good. No disrespect to Jamal Adams, so
I love no disrespect to Eric Weddle or any of
these other guys, Earl Thomas coming back. Drwin's ability to
just be a mismatch eraser to whatever you want to
throw out there offensively. I mean, that's that's enormous. You know,
he's the guy that's gonna guard Travis Kelsey, He's the
guy that's gonna spy the Baker May fields in Lamar Jackson.
(58:22):
So I think this is huge because you know, we
saw such a change last year in that Chargers defense.
When you have someone like that in the middle of
the field who can really just take away that zone.
Obviously they have great pass rushers, see if Jerry Tillery
can be you know, kind of that difference maker and
a three technique as a first round pick. But you know,
I would say, largely due to injury, the middle of
this defense is underdeveloped because we haven't seen those young
(58:46):
inside linebackers step up. So um, I think it puts
a lot of pressure on a veteran like Thomas Davis,
who wasn't that great last year, and some of the
some of these young guys are gonna have to step up.
It sucks too because we just don't know how long
he's gonna be out, and I think, you know, it's
obvious when talking about a foot injury, that's pretty significant
and it's something that you want to be really careful with.
So hopefully they do get him back because I think
(59:08):
he's one of the most exciting defensive players in the
entire league right now. Has has there ever been a
bigger butcher job from a front office that has been
less discussed from a playoff team? Then what's happened with
the Jadeveon Clowney situation? Oh my god, it's crazy right
and now I'd like everyone's talking about maybe he'll get
traded again. I remember talking to teams before the draft
(59:29):
and was like, why don't you for clowning. You know,
you could probably send a two is your high pick
and then a package of Day three picks and get Clowney.
They're like, well, he paid, so okay pay him then,
because you're I'm gonna out like that in the second
round or in the third round. So it is, but
it's not the second round. There round he wants. He
wants Khalil mac money. He doesn't have Khalil max motor,
(59:50):
Like he's just not Khalil Mack. In addition to injury history,
which is clean, you know. I mean, I think Clowney
is like a lot of guys right now. You know,
I would say, sending on Melvin Gordon, you have to
be realistic to your career and who you are and
that you're not gonna get paid like Khalil Mack, or
that if you're Melvin Gordon, you're not gonna get paid.
(01:00:10):
You know, like what Zeke Elliott will get paid. It's
not the same. It's not The NFL is fun into
this trap up. Okay, when a guy is a free agent,
he immediately becomes the highest played, period paid player in
his position. That has to stop eventually. And guys, you know,
like when Carson Wentz came up, Carson Wentz is making
thirty two million dollars a year. That's really good on
the extension that he got, but he's not the highest
(01:00:31):
paid quarterback. I think there needs to be a lot
more awareness from players that, Okay, I'm not gonna get
Khalil mac money, but I might get Frank Clark money
and that's really good. Like I'm I'm still okay with
that this is generational wealth. I'm gonna be comfortable whether
it's sixty million or seventy million by the time your
tax it's' is not that not that much of a
difference to Devian. So it also sucks for the Texas.
(01:00:53):
They don't have a GM. They don't have anyone who
is running the big picture here unless it's Bill O'Brien.
But that's where it hurts you that you don't have
a clear hierarchy in your front office. Where are you
on Daniel Jones. I want him to just be I
want him to be the next Tom Brady. I I
liked him at Duke a lot, and then the hype
(01:01:13):
started that he was a top ten pick and I
was like, oh, no, I don't I don't think we're
that high. Um. But now seeing the reaction from Giants
fans when he was drafted getting Booty Yankee Stadium, I
want him to now be the best quarterback that we've
seen in twenty five years, just because having to overcome
that this is your moment. You just got drafted to
play in the NFL in the top ten. There should
(01:01:35):
be the greatest moment of your life. Short of you know,
your kids being born, and it was kind of ruined
for him by his own fans. So I'm I'm all aboard.
I hope it works. I was so happy, happy for
him that first dry I throw the touchdown and and
hopefully quieted some critics. But um, I don't know that
we're gonna see him much this year, regardless of how
Eli plays, because ownership there is very, very loyal. How
(01:01:58):
much better is the Chiefs defense? Oh my god, so
much better. It's you know, I live in chef's country,
and you traded d Ford, who cost you a Super Bowl.
You traded d Ford for Frank Clark. That's an upgrade.
You traded Eric Berry for Tyrande Matthew. That's a pretty
big upgrade. Chris Jones is only gonna be better. I
think the switch to a four three defense is going
(01:02:20):
to help them a lot. I think Spagnolo is a
much better defensive coordinator. So I really think that it's
just it's remarkable the upgrades across the board, even bringing
in Brashad Breland and Morris Clayborne, like just having better
depth at corners so that you're not relying on Steven
Nelson out there's your number two or number three corner.
I think this seems to be a lot better. And
I'm very excited about one rookie and uh, he's had
(01:02:43):
a great camp. And everyone kind of, you know, makes
fun of the Chief's defense, like, oh, well they're gonna
score fifty. I don't know if they're gonna have to
this year. I think this is this defense, uh could
be very very good. Just with just the pass rush
alone is going to be special, awesome stuff. Matt Miller

Are you familiar with Mikhail proker Off at all? Very
very little Russian? Yeah, drinks vodka? Well, now you're going cliche. Yes,
(01:03:29):
you you are Michael Prokeraf, the guy who just who
just sold his uh his rights to the Barclay Center
and to the Brooklyn Nets. Now are you now familiar?
That was about all I knew of him. I didn't
know any background on the middle though. Um, okay, so
he he, he's gonna He acquired it for two three
(01:03:51):
million dollars plus the team's debt, and there was a
substantial amount of debt, and he sold it for two
three five billion dollars two point three five billion dollars.
Like that is a good flip. That is a good flip.
(01:04:14):
Like I think he spent over three hundred million dollars um,
I mean absorbing the debt. You can write off the
debt obviously being four and I'd love to know how
much tax are actually paid. But like that's really amazing,
really really amazing. And then there was the Brian Windhorst
tweets about him, which were really funny. Uh, Wendy, of course,
(01:04:37):
I gave some kind of perspective on exactly what what
it was like for um, uh, exactly what it was
like in the era of Michael proke Raft. I'm not sure,
like I don't know if we'll ever see another owner
like Brian Windhorst. I don't I mean, I'm excuse me,
like Michael Prokeroft. I'm not sure. He came in in
(01:05:00):
as this you know, kind of bachelor gangster and by
the way, Like, I'm not trying to be the worst
human on earth, but I'll just say that most dudes
that are billionaires coming out of Russia that own a
diamond mine have some sort of mob ties wind words
from ESPN tweets, some great memories. I'll miss him telling
(01:05:22):
sixty minutes he couldn't remember where he left his fifty
million dollar yacht. Remember he didn't have a computer in
his office. Do you guys ever see that sixty minutes piece?
He canceled a meeting with Carmelo Anthony while on TV
Uh he waited days to fire Avery Johnson because he
was skiing, and he said if he if he didn't
win the title in five years, he would get married
(01:05:45):
his punishment. And at the end of the day he
walks away with two billion with a bee And I
think it's actually even more than that, because the arena
gets gets gets to men more money, Like that's kind
of amazing, kind of amazing. And he was there when
(01:06:05):
they traded three first round picks for KG, Paul Pierce
and Jason Terry, which I know the Celtics haven't won
a title, but that still becomes one of the great
heists of all time, Mikhail proker Off reminded me of this.
Remember the Direct TV ad alpulence I has it? That
says it with a little mini giraffes. Do you guys
(01:06:27):
remember that commercial at all? What's Direct TV's new ad?
Like they remember they had the h cable Rob Blow
and directing satellite Rob Blow. This was before that. They
had the rich Russian guy going opulence, I has it? Um,
what's there? And they've had they've had Peyton Manning right
(01:06:48):
and they think they have or was it Eli Manning
was was cable Cable Manning and Peyton Manning was Direct
TV Manning walking away with a cool to a clean
two billion dollars. That's not a bad deal to walk
away with clean to Bill. Will Dwayne Haskins succeed in
the National Football League we'll discuss next. Be sure to

Got some sports this weekend. Some of you got kids
back in school already, some of you next week. Some
of us we got a couple more weeks play summer
while others are back in school. Probably some surfing in
(01:07:32):
my future is my little man gets home. I know,
as soon as he hits the ground here in two hours,
he'll immediately want to go to Doheny Beach and hit
the waves, because that's kind of dude he is. And
I think we will oblige, probably to morrow morning. Anyway.
I hope you're great, man. Uh, this is the Doug
got Leap Show. March Layer will join us upcoming next
our talk to Lamar Jackson um in a second. But
(01:07:57):
every day this time we like to play for you
a portion of a previous radio or TV show, either
from Fox Sports Radio. Remember you got Dan Patrick, rich Eisen,
Colin calherd um Clay Travis, as well as all the
guys Jason Smith and Mike Harmon Street at a Vegas
odd couple, Ben Maller. You've got all these great shows.
(01:08:21):
We got tons of content or from Fox Sports One,
all those shows we call it. And now this was
Urban Meyer on the Herd this morning talking about Dwayne
Haskins and the Redskins. Dwayne Haskins is the most accurate
pastor I've had, and that includes Alex Smith and some
other great players I've had. Uh, he only played one year. However,
(01:08:43):
his accuracy, his arm strength or all NFL style UM
so much of the quarterback playing enough. I remember when
Alex Smith first got picked by the Redskins and he
to that up to that point it was one of
the best players I've ever seen, and he really struggled.
But he struggled because the forty Niners are bad on
both sides to the ball. They didn't surround him with
good players. And yet it became Alex Smith's issue that
(01:09:04):
he wasn't a good NFL quarterback. Uh, this is gonna
be key who's gonna be which is obvious, but who's
gonna be around Dwayne Haskins if they put him with
very talented guy. I'm telling you he's good enough to
get the ball there. And as far as a quick learner,
he's a brilliant guy. You know. Last year is barely
touched and it wasn't because of you know, because people
blits you. Obviously, his ability to identify the defense, flip
(01:09:26):
the protection to get the uh blitz picked up was
about as good as we've been around. So learns quick,
incredibly accurate, great arm strength. Uh. The question is what's surrounded. Yeah,
and also his feet, you know, I mean like he's
not a great athlete, he's just not And he made
a great throw to start, you know, to start yesterday,
(01:09:47):
but there's a lack of accuracy because of his feet,
not because of his accuracy. Actually I heard this comment
and there's a video of the of the comment Aaron
Rodgers after the game. Of course Aaron Rodgers didn't play,
but afterwards Aaron Rodgers was catching up. You know, they
(01:10:08):
go across the across the field, shake hands, dap, everybody up,
hug it out. He did so with Lamar Jackson, and
Rodgers told Jackson as Jackson said, like, what's up? Goat
greatest of all time? Rogers told Lamar Jackson, I love
watching you play, man. That was pretty spectacular. Have a
(01:10:29):
great season. Slide a little bit. Jackson, of course smiled
pointer Rogerson said, I got you, baby. The idea like, hey, dude,
you cannot be jumping over guys and running through guys.
Don't be afraid to just get the first down and slide. Now,
this is Aaron Rodgers, of course, voice of reason, who
has been injured himself. He's had plenty of Nick's cuts, bumps, bruises.
(01:10:54):
I still think that I'm just not a Lamar Jackson dude.
You know now, I think they're gonna get off to
a great start. If you look at their schedule, look
closely at the Ravens schedule, they'll go like, Okay, well,
I see them winning the first two games of the season,
don't They open up with the Dolphins in Miami. The
(01:11:15):
only problem with the Dolphins in Miami earlier in the
season is when you're on the sidelines there. Remember I
did a sideline game last year. It was Bears Dolphins,
and they put the visiting team on the visiting team sidelines,
which because it has it's not a dome, but it's
like half covered. The only part of the stadium in
(01:11:35):
the afternoon when you're playing a game that gets the
sun is the visitor's side of the field and the
only way to you. They actually have interns who come
with the visiting team and they hold up like reflectors
or or like almost shades. Because you can't have a tent,
you can't block the sidelines of the fans, so they
actually have to have people who hold it up because
(01:11:59):
the sun is it's as a kid, did you ever
do the magnifying glass on an ant or on a snail.
That's what it feels like. They're you know, it's a
good twenty degrees hotter at that part of the stadium
than any other part of the stadium. And so the
only thing that I would say would be limiting the
Baltimore Ravens would be late in that game, if it's close,
(01:12:23):
you run out of gas because you know you're sitting
there in the sun all day. But the Ravens take
on the Dolphins, are already four and a half point favorites.
Dolphins offensive line is an abject disaster. Then they take
on the Cardinals at home, and I'm not sure if
you watch that. The Cardinals are terrible on defense, I
mean atrocious, and they're worse against the run, and Baltimore
(01:12:43):
is gonna run the football. Now it gets real after that, Chiefs, Browns, Steelers. Uh,
they do have Bengals, Seahawks, Patriots, they have the Texans,
the Rams, right, Steelers again, Browns in the road, Jets.
I think he's going to struggle this year. But I
think after two weeks gone the season, people will start
(01:13:05):
talking crazy talk about m v P and fantasy football. Like,
I honestly think first two weeks of this season he's
gonna be amazing, But you're not going to outscore the Chiefs.
The Ravens defense is not the same. You're on the
road and people adjust. People will adjust. Yes, rhyme music.
(01:13:27):
So do you think Lamar Jackson is the future of
the Baltimore Ravens at quarterback? Because he's on his rookie contract?
He they trade They barely traded up to squeak In
to get him with the last pick in the first round,
so they do get that fifth year option on him.
So do you see him getting a second contract or
(01:13:48):
a contract extension from the Ravens. There was something I
saw I can't remember who was from, but they pointed
out a long time ago since they added the fifth
year contract option to first round draft picks, the only
two to not have them picked up were Jamis Winston
and Marcus Mariota. So do you think Lamar Jackson's the
type of quarterback who will be able to develop to
(01:14:10):
remain with the Ravens or do you think so we're
so far out, dude, it's a second year. I just mean, like,
I have serious questions about him staying healthy enough. Everybody does. Look,
there's two major questions, can you stay healthy enough even
though he hasn't been hurt in the NFL? And can
he actually throw a football? And I don't know if
do people remember how bad the playoffs were against the Chargers.
(01:14:32):
They were booing him at home. Now he's going to
get better, but it's not like all of a sudden
overnight he's going to become Johnny Nitis. So I just
think there's kind of limitations he can be a better
version shop in the meantime. Yeah, that you feel like
at some point they're gonna catch up. Do you hit
(01:14:52):
you and hurt you? Right? Once they hit you, it
always hurts you. So I'm I'm fascinated by that. Like
I just love like first week games. I've been doing this.
We we have a tendency to lose track of them
because college football gets underway, right Like college football starts
next weekend in full the following weekend as well, so
(01:15:15):
by the time we get to September, Like, oh, okay, Titans,
Brown's people forget Titans playoff team last year playoff team
with it was last or two years ago? That both
the last two years Ravens and there their dogs in Cleveland.
That's gonna be all of the game. Falcons, Vikings to
indoor teams all right, early game. That means Kirk Cousins
(01:15:37):
will play well. He doesn't play well on the bright lights,
Big City Rams, Panthers, Cam Newton was he looked like
And I think I continue to tell people that Christian
McCaffrey's is going to be the dude, the best running
back in that game. Chiefs, Jags, Colts, Chargers, Giants, Cowboys, Niners, Buccaneers.
Is interesting, like what does Jamis Winston look like with
(01:15:59):
Bruce Arian his head coach, Steelers Patriots? And I gave
you my pick. It was like, dude, Steelers six point Dog, Texans, Saints, Broncos, Raiders.
Um ever been sitting at home late at night informercial
comes on and you gotta have what you see on TV.
(01:16:19):
Kind of feels like that's what happened with the Arizona Cardinals.
Steve Kin was sitting at home trying to revamp his
team and he went for the Ronco product. We'll discuss
it next in The Doug got Lip Show. Be sure

are so last night was uh not exactly a revelation
for the Arizona Cardinals. By the way, this game is
(01:17:22):
currently being played on the NFL Network Kyler Murray's team
h ah And remember they're taking on the raid Is
And as much as we may have fallen in love
with their raid Is because they're on hard knocks and
(01:17:44):
you start to know their personnel and their guys and
love Breast and Buck Buckner, Breaston Bucker's their defensive line coach.
Be what God made you to beat, Be what God
made you to bet, Be what God made you to be.
Like that is some power and stuff like Dara, I'm
running out here because God maybe to get somebody. But
(01:18:10):
the drives, oh boy, not good, not good. Calamari three
of eight twelve yards passing, sacked twice. But more than anything,
I just didn't look good, didn't look comfortable. And they
(01:18:31):
had a bunch of these false starts where in the
NFL you can clap, but nobody does you know. You
can clap, but you can't fake clap. Clap. They did it,
They did that. I can't do that. And apparently the
Cardinals didn't know this right that that's the fact that
(01:18:55):
it got called. I mean, look, I didn't know that
was a rule. You didn't know as asual? Did you know?
Did you know? Did anybody know those rules? Good? But
you know what, it's not our job to know. I mean,
I guess if I was calling the game, it would
be my job to know. But it's not our job
to know. You know, whose job it is to know?
That would be Cliff Kingsbury, who played in the NFL,
(01:19:17):
and Kyler Murray's quarterback, and anybody on that staff who
has been the league. Like, hey guys, yes, Mr Gottlieb,
I don't think we get into like practice, like, I
don't think you can actually do that? What do you
mean you can't do the fake thing with your the
gyrations with your hands. Not in this league reminds me
(01:19:37):
like Major League, right, remember when um it was Charlie
Sheen's character wild Thing Vaughan, Yeah, he Van, we wear
captain sleeves at this level, right, That's what reminds me
of Hey, Murray, we can't clap our hands and snap
(01:19:59):
the football. So in addition to looking tiny overwhelmed, he
looked ill prepared. And one of the things about the
NFL is generally there's not week one, especially not defensive
game plans. Week two maybe a little bit for what
you do, but not a lot. They're not doing games specific.
(01:20:22):
I mean, heck, even taking a safety right, not knowing
where you are on the field, that's football one oh one.
You drop your foot back and you're at the one
foot line and you see the defense coming you. You
gotta dive forward, gotta dive forward. And then I started
(01:20:44):
to realize, Hey, I know we've talked to a lot
about the air aid offense on this show. Mike Leach,
of course, the one of the architects of the air
aid offense says, you know, Patriots run some of it. Uh,
Steelers run a lot of a lot of it. There's
other teams that they have used it. It's one thing
to use concepts, it's another thing to use the college
offense Princeton offense. In the NBA, they'll run concepts of Princeton,
(01:21:10):
but generally people don't run the Princeton offense because, much
like the air raid offense, it's designed for a team
with inferior talent to compete with the team with superior talent,
Whereas in the NFL, you just you don't have those
kind of mismatches because you're undersized. You just don't. Everybody
(01:21:30):
can run, or they wouldn't be in the NFL. Literally.
I mean, it's the same reason you can't run option
in the NFL. Now, why don't they have a run
option in the NFL Because you cannot run dudes. You
just can't, and your quarterback gets beat up. And with
teams a lot of teams don't carry a fullback. Nobody
wants to be cut blocked. There's other reasons, but the
(01:21:53):
primary reason is cannot run dudes, and the air raid
offense is designed really for all man and blocking wide splits,
and those guys are getting dominated because they're terrible upfront.
They've been terrible and they didn't address it. Instead they
drafted another quarterback and they already had a young quarterback.
But you start to realize, hey, why didn't anybody do
(01:22:14):
this before? When anybody draftified ten quarterback before number one overall?
Why did anybody go air raid? Why did anybody go
and get Cliff Kingsbury, Like, oh, that's why, that's why
this was Kyler Murray on his performance last night. We
didn't look as good as we would like to look.
(01:22:35):
But it's a preseason. This is why it's the preseason,
and it's just tough because you know, it's not we're
not playing a whole game, and it's it's I don't
want to say it's not real, but it's just you know,
it's not the regular season. We're not doing everything that
we're gonna do, so that's why it's it's kind of
it gets frustrating, but at the same time, you know
it's preseason, so should be pointing out that the other
teams aren't doing all that they're going to do either, right,
should be pointed out this is Steve Kim and what
(01:22:57):
he saw from his quarterback. Listen, I have from in
this amount of confidence and event our quarterback. He has
a supreme amount of confidence, and for him to have
a night like that last night is really to me
what you want sometimes early on, to see different looks,
to see the different pressures, and to go through some
growing pains. So I look at Kyler Murray and I
(01:23:22):
think this feels like a too good to be true scenario,
and it all does kind of make sense to you, Like, well,
you know, you do have good wide receivers, and you
do have a really good running back, and you've got
a coach who you know he's coached this for has
played the league before, Like this could kind of be
a new way to try something that other people just
haven't tried. You know, it reminds me of they've been
(01:23:47):
at home late at night, see one of those infomercial
things said it and forget it and think of all
the different ways in which you could cook a stew
only links to will When you try the supers stio
set six thousand, you're like, Okay, tell me more, tell
(01:24:12):
me more. Yeah, I mean, man, like, look, this is
the this is those pills that you see online on Facebook, whatever,
the ads that pop up when you're like, all you
have to do is take a pill and you'll lose weight. Well,
all you gotta do is take a pill and I'll
lose weight, I'll get in shape. That's great. Why doesn't
everybody do this? Why are all these other people going
(01:24:33):
to gyms and doing hot yoga and eating right when
all I gotta do is take this little pill and
I'm better. Do you know why? Because the way, because
what works has always worked. And all of these shortcut
things are just shortcut things, but they're actually end up
being a long cut, right. I mean, look, the truth
(01:24:59):
is even steroids, which do in fact work and are
are illegal shortcut. The truth about steroids is that although
they can help you build muscle, the biggest thing they
help you with is your energy, so that when you
work out the next day, you work out again, and
work out again and work out again, you don't get tired.
You don't have to have those down days like normal
(01:25:20):
human beings do, especially as you age. So yes, steroids work,
but the other thing is it helps you gives you
more energy so that you can do some of the
work more easily. That's not what this is. Hey, this
is this is a maddened offense. This is a college offense.
(01:25:43):
Let's just dink and dunk it around. There's a reason
the why it splits, Like, why hasn't anybody tried wide
splits in the NFL. That's why. Because the guy players
are just too good, too fast, too strong. You match
up man and man every time, you're going to get
beat often. And your quarterback is always on the move
and never gets a chance to plant his feet and
can't throw the ball deep down the field like I
(01:26:08):
get it. We think for example, the Cancer Chiefs, they
got a guy that throws it further. They still run
the football, they still run power, they still run belly,
they still run all the basic stuff. What the New
England Patriots do last year, Yeah, they've they've gone away
from running it in years in the past. Last year
they lined up and they made Gronk into the best
blocking tight end in the NFL. Because he who runs
(01:26:31):
the football stops the run, makes you play one dimensional,
takes away what you do best, wins the game. It's
just like a basketball. Do they shoot a lot of threes? Yes?
You know the teams that win usually wants to make
the most lamps and make the free get to the
three to line the most, turn the ball over the least.
What works works. But Steve time Gentlem, manager of the
(01:26:55):
Arizona Cardinals, was probably sitting at home and saw this infomercial.
Does your NFL team suck? Are they boring and almost unwatchable?
Do you wish you could score more points? If you're
looking to make your team fun, exciting, and electrified, we
have exactly what you're looking for. For the low low
price of the number one overall draft pick, your team
(01:27:16):
could have Heisman Trophy winner Kayler Murray. He's fast, he's fun,
and he's just what your team is missing. Now you
might be asking yourself, isn't the only five ten? But
it doesn't matter when you can do this. Texas leads
thirty one Murray he's gonna run it himself, skips south
of side left, He's got a room thirty five four
twenty five field, fifty down the side ten food track.
(01:27:41):
Warn that was electric sixty seven yard run by Kyler Murray.
Call eight hundred five five five fifty nine fifty nine
now to get your very own Kyler Murray plus if
you call in the next five minutes, We'll give you
a Cliff Kingsbury head coach, absolutely free. That's right, your
own head coach in air raid offense, absolutely free if
(01:28:04):
you call in the next five minutes. Kyler Murray doesn't
come with offensive mine men who get blocked or a
defense who can get a stop. Side effects may include
your team getting too much hot, making the Raiders look
like a good football team, and everyone getting fired before
the end of the season. Excellent work from a man Vito,
who of course does so much of our our imaging.
And uh that infomercial as well. Doug Gotlick show here

Slareth joins us he's at three time Super Bowl champion
NFL on Fox analyst we've been talking to about Kyla
Murray Cardinals offense and whether or not it will work
long term. Didn't last night, but it's very early in
the season. What do you think about I mean, like
(01:29:08):
wide splits, uh and the style by which they play well.
I mean, I think I think it's like anything Doug.
I mean, I think the passing concepts and all those things.
You know, they all mirror. Anytime you have routes and
route combinations and concepts, amount of that stuff, they all mirror.
Everybody runs that kind of stuff or everybody has a
(01:29:29):
portion of that in the National Football League. Now it's
a matter of whether you can major in it or
minor in it. But you know, it's very much like
I was. I was. I was one of the guys
that wasn't on the bandwagon for the Chip Kelly experience
because I was just like, listen, I understand they want
some games, but you know, if you're trying air raid
(01:29:50):
wise or you're trying to spread wise basically keep people
um in a pinch, not let them substitute and run plays,
you know, one after the other. You're trying to run
eighty five players. There's a couple of things that don't
work in that process. One, you never control the temple
of the game, therefore you don't control the clock. Um.
And then ultimately what ends up happening is your defense
(01:30:14):
gets worn out. So every quarter of the season. I
broke this down when the Philadelphia Eagles went ten and six.
Every quarter of the season their defense played in extra games.
So instead of four games just by sure volume of plays,
they played five games. And so there's an aspect of
that where you have to basically take a portion of
(01:30:34):
what you do at the college game, and you've got
to at least only run a portion of that, and
you've got to be a little bit more traditional. That said,
I think Kyler Murray could be the real deal. I mean,
talk to a couple of guys on the team. Um,
you know, he's got a great understanding of of NFL football.
So we'll see if it works. Obviously they're pretty vanilla
(01:30:57):
at this particular point in time. But you have to
understand the complementary nature of football. And if you think
you're going completely collegian in the National Football League, uh,
your your tenure is only gonna laugh the season or
two off your your club Kingsbury. You're gonna have to
adjust it to some degree. Gottlieb show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Let me get to a team that has
not been discussed a bunch, uh, and that's the Denver Broncos.
(01:31:21):
Of course you do radio in Denver, you're a former
Denver Bronco. And the narrative they were trying they've been
trying to sell us on is hey, we our defense
is really good and maybe even better without Vance Joseph here.
Obviously he's coaching the Cardinals defense, which looks terrible. But
we've gotten substantially better at quarterback, maybe even better than
we were when we had Peyton that last year because
(01:31:43):
he was he'd fallen off a cliff. Is that the
reality is Joe Flacco. Is Joe Flacco still a viable option? Oh,
there's no question. Joe Flacco has brought some stability. You know,
Joe Flacco two years ago had a back injury, he
played all sixteen games, we didn't play very well, and
then last year he have the hit. So he's brought
stability to this offense. They have looked significantly better um
(01:32:06):
with with Joe Flackle. I think the issue that you
get into The issue that I have with dever Broncos
is I can make a pretty compelling case that their
top twenty two players, you know, you look at their rosters,
Their top twenty two players are pretty good players. Like
roster for roster, they match up pretty well with some
of the better teams in the National Football League. It's
the bottom half of the roster the depth. They don't
(01:32:27):
have depth. They don't have experience, UM, and that's gonna
be the problem. You know, They're not really beyond too
deep at the wide receiver position. So there are two
starting guys that can make a compelling argument are pretty
damn good if Emmanuel Sanders comes back healthy, but after
that they're gonna struggle. They still haven't developed a tight end.
It's a mismatch type of guy UM, and they've got
a bunch of injuries at that position over the course
(01:32:49):
of the last couple of years. So there's some question
marks for me on a depth standpoint. I do believe
this defense is gonna be pretty outstanding under Vic Fangio
with some of the talent that they have UM. But again,
you know, if I was handicapping their division, obviously I
put Kansas City and the Chargers ahead of them. I
think they're a team like I picked them to be
(01:33:10):
an eight and eight type of team fighting for nine
and seven in a potential wild card birth. Um, but
they're gonna have to stay healthy because I think, you know,
after a couple of guys get hurt on that roster, Um,
that roster is not it's just not up the snuff
after the first twenty two guys. I tend to agree
with you. Doug got Show on Fox Sports Radio, that's
(01:33:30):
the voice of Mark Schlareth. The big news today is
Derwin James out for a substantial amount of time for
the Chargers. You've seen the Chargers up close. You know
how good the All Pro is as just a rookie.
How much has this hurt a team that has their
sight set on the Super Bowl? Oh, it's devastating because, um,
you're just not gonna like, you're not gonna You're just
(01:33:52):
not gonna plug another guy in and basically match the physicality, um,
the range of a Derwin James. I mean, he is
the perfect guy. And you look at you know what
Gus Bradley, their defensive coordinator, likes to do. They want
to play that that matchup cover three that took the
Seattle Seahawks to back to back Super Bowls. That's what
(01:34:13):
they want to run. And to do that, you need
that Cam Chancellor type safety who can roam, who can
come down the line of scrimmage, who can run support,
who can play robber on the inside, um, you know,
who can match up on the outside in zone like.
You need that guy that that has that kind of
physical physical ability down there in the box, and that's
(01:34:35):
what he brought to them. But on top of that,
if you need to rotate the opposite way, he's got
the coverage skills and the length to be a great
pass defender in the middle of the field as well.
So he's a unique physical specimen and you're just not
going to replace that. To be an All Pro as
a rookie when you're still learning the game, and to
have that kind of range and that kind of physicality,
(01:34:56):
I mean, you know, there's some guys in this league
that you know, I always say, you have to win
the genetic lottery to play in the National Football League,
and then there's a lot of other things that you
have to be good with. You know, you've got to
have great football kind of acumen from the neck up
and you know you've got to have great health and
all those things. Well, as far as the guys who
won the genetic lottery, he is the top one percent
(01:35:18):
of one percent of guys who won the jenetic lottery.
I mean, he's a freak show and it's certainly is
going to hurt their defense, no question about it. I
completely agree with you, especially as they they open up
in season with the Colts and we'll see with Andrew Luck.
What do you think of the Andrew Luck thing where
we can't seem to get a straight answer as to
if and when it'll be healthy. Well, you know it's
fine to a doctor buddy of mine because that's the
(01:35:38):
kind of stuff I do. And he's like, listen, you know,
if it's a calf injury, which they have reported a
calf injury, like a calf injury heals within a couple
of weeks, So why is it not healing? So that
tends to make you think as that calf, you know,
whittles down into into the tendon, the connection between the
(01:35:59):
achilles and in the calf, like is it something more
than that? Remember we saw Kevin Durant have a quote
unquote calf injury, and all of a sudden it became
a torn Aquie's right and so there's something. There's obviously
something because a muscle injury is gonna heal within a
couple of weeks um. So it seems to me, just
on the outside looking in, And again this is just
(01:36:21):
a buddy of mine, who's a doctor's opinion, it seems
to be a little bit deeper. You know, in the
NFL hates to they have to they report exactly what
they have to report, you know, lower leg injuries like hockey.
But this seems a little bit a little bit more
involved than just a muscle strain. To be sure, Stink,
(01:36:41):
I'm one in your opinion on on the Cowboys. If
you would you draw a line in the sand and say, hey, look,
if you don't want to take this, that's fine. We
can do this in the off season. You can play
in the franchise tag for for Dak Prescott. Meanwhile, you
got Zeke to work on, who's a year back of Really, like,
how would you go about it if you were in charge? Well,
(01:37:03):
I think one you have to understand, I think Jerry Jones,
you know, really, I just know talking to the players
that are played for Jerry Jones, and I know a
lot of guys who playing for him. Jerry loves his
players and you know, at times to his own detriment um.
So he wants to make everybody happy. He wants to
reward God. I get that aspect of it. I would
(01:37:27):
think that he would like to reward Zeke Elliott. But
the way that the current collective orning agreement of structure,
you don't have to reward that guy and um, and
you know, I think you've got to get that that
quarterback taken care of. So you know, I understand there's
a lot of numbers that are floating out there. You know,
the thirty million dollars a year, and he wants forty
(01:37:50):
million dollars a year, and you know the thirty million
dollars your figure. The thing that always irritates me about
negotiations become public is I always think it's leaked by
the team, somebody with in the team to say, hey,
I can give you a monopoly money contract and backload
the thing and say hey it's value to thirty million
dollars a year and make you as the player look
like an ass for not taking it. And and those
(01:38:11):
are the things that really bother me about, you know,
when negotiations happened like this. But you know, I think
Dak Prescott believes in himself. Will you know if he
has to go franchise a year from now, uh and
go to Kirk Cousins route, I think you can do that.
I think Jerry would like to get all three, you know,
whether it's a Marii Cooper, whether it's Zeke Elliott, or
whether it's that Prescott. I think he'd like to get
(01:38:32):
all three done. Um. But it's you know, it's gonna
be one of those things where you're gonna have to
be very creative and I just don't think you can
pay a running back in today's NFL um top dollar.
And I think Todd Gurley is a is a case
in point. You know, he was playing at m VP
level through twelve weeks and then all of a sudden,
you know, he gets hurt and he becomes non existent
(01:38:53):
and actually is more of a hindrance than a help
comes super Bowl time. So you know, I think it's
a cautionary tale, Doug. And I think certainly, um, it's
certainly kind of uh undermines what what that or what
Zeke Elliott is trying to get done. I tend to
agree with you. I think it's interesting the Melvin Gordon
thing I felt like was leaked by him though right
(01:39:13):
where he I still really want to play, but I'm
willing to sit out, Like I feel like he's starting
to get desperate, knowing that the Chargers haven't moved off
their number, right. But you know, I look at him,
I mean, and I get people rate guys differently. Melvin
Gordon is a is a good player, like a really
good player. But he's had a thousand yards one time.
(01:39:37):
Come on his breakout season, he had eight hundred yards rushing.
This is the first year, by the way, last year
was the first year he ever averaged more than four
yards of carry. He was always in the threes. So
he had eight hundred yards. You know, he had what
fifty two receptions or whatever was He scored a bunch
of touchdowns. But you know, I think the Chargers are
are are looking at this like your over value, over
(01:40:00):
evaluating your talent level. Now. I don't feel the same
way about Zeke. I think Zeke is an absolute beast
um and he's led the league in rushing two of
the three seasons he's played. He's an absolute animal. I
look at those guys differently. And I'm not saying Melvin
Board is good, because I think he is, but I
don't put him in the same categories I would Zeke Elliott.
(01:40:23):
Last thing is, um, Jimmy Garoppolo has had up and
down practices. I guess he had five picks in the
scrimmage then he bounced back. I know, just scrimmages. Ultimately,
how good is Jimmy G. H You know, it's funny.
I was talking to their general manager today, John lynch Um.
Had a nice conversation with John and he says, you know,
(01:40:44):
Jimmy G has had a great camp, a great camp,
and he goes the The issue is is he goes
to the first preseason game. We didn't dress twenty nine players,
and those reps are important because Jimmy G ultimately is paid,
played what like games games he started? Well, okay, yeah,
(01:41:06):
so's he's he hasn't played like, he hasn't played very much.
So part of what they did in practice the other
day and what they've done is they put him in
really like they're trying to put him in bad positions
like this is part of the learning curve, and and yeah,
he made some bad throws and some bad mistakes five
straight fix. But John goes. I'm telling you he's had
(01:41:27):
a great camp, and you know, at some point you
gotta you believe in a guy. There's very few guys
that spin the ball better than Jimmy Garraflo. Kyle Shanahan
told me, as far as the ball in the rocation
of the ball, he's never seen anybody throwing any better
than Jimmy Garoppolo throws the ball. So he's smart, he understands, um,
he understands the game. Um, he's physically really gifted, and
(01:41:51):
he goes. Part of what we're trying to do to
him is we're trying to stress him as much as
we can stress him in practice because we can't afford
to get him hurt because our season's over if he does. So.
You know, you can't always read. You know, you can't
look at hey up and down. He threw five picks
one day. You can't over five picks in a row
one day. You can't always just look at the surface.
(01:42:13):
There's it goes a little bit deeper than than what
you see on the surface. I do feel like we're
underselling Carson Wentz, like I've you know, I know he
didn't play last night's we haven't seen him, but like
it's reasonable to think the guy he was in year
two gonna win the m v P eleven and two
thirty three touchdown, seven receptions gets hurt. Like everybody comes
(01:42:33):
off in a c L. Their first year back isn't
the same. You know, we we talked about the great
quarterbacks in the NFL, and I'm not sure we mentioned him.
I feel like somehow we've, you know, before the season started,
obviously we've forgotten about him. Yeah, And and and it's
because of back to back injuries, you know, And you're
a percent riot about the a c L. I mean,
(01:42:53):
I've told so many guys just this in general, coming
back from injuries, Doug, is that the thing you have
to do, because physically you'll come back, it's the mental
hurdle that you have to get over. And one of
the things I've told a ton of guys over the
course of my career playing and then you know my
career is an analyst is at some point you have
(01:43:15):
to re establish what your new percent and it may
be of what it used to be. But surgically you've
been fixed and you're good enough to play, and you
have to say, hey, man, that's my new hun percent
and now I can just go hell bed for election
and trust in my body. But you hey, if you
start to feel better than you do, you know, then
(01:43:35):
you do you do when you start out, then that's gravy, right,
But you have to say, I'm never gonna feel any
better than this, and it's what I used to feel like,
but this is my new Hunter percent and it's good
enough to play at an exceptionally high level. And you've
got to You've got to tell yourself that, and then
you have to accept it and you have to go
out and play. If you're always waiting to become a percent,
(01:43:57):
to become exactly what you work you've been forever all
her by that surgery, you'll never be the same. So
if you're always waiting to become a dent, guess what
you'll I'm not quite a hundred percent yourself right out
of a leak. So you've got to be able to mentally,
you've got to be able to make that shift and say,
you know, I'll never be the same, and that's okay
because I can still play at an exceptionally high level.
(01:44:17):
And when you make that transition mentally, that's when you
can go out and dominate again. Awesome stuff. Uh, that's
the one only stink Mark Layry. You'll see him covering
NFL games on Fox this season. You'll hear mother Doug
got lip show. Mark, Thanks so much for joining us

Is much better, especially finally breaking the news and we're
almost done with the show. So are you gonna do
you know about whether or not you're going to be
on the winning end of this fight scene or that's
a big thing, right, I lose in the end, but
I put a hell of a fight. Yeah, that's a lie.
(01:45:45):
I gotta put it. I'm gonna be You're one of
the guys who's just gonna like walk up to whoever
the hero is and he like breaks your neck in
three seconds. That's not true. I put him in a
big show chokehold slam and throw him down on the canvas.
That's comin David Gascon from the Los Angeles voiced and
die quietly in the night though. But so you lose,
you're like, I put up a hell of a five.
(01:46:06):
This is like, um, what do you know? What do
you what's his name's character? Brad Pitt's character in um uh,
Once upon a Time in Hollywood? Have you guys seen
that yet? I have not seen it. I was hoping
you're gonna say snatch, but he has a devasting right
hand on that movie. No, uh, no, you're you're not
Brad Pitt and Snatch. I do not see you being
Brad Pitt and Snatch can be like you likedgs? Do
(01:46:29):
you like DAGs? What don't you just say? Do you

outstanding movie? Really really good. All right, we got a
lot to get too. Still bad news for a Super

my kids have been away. My daughter has been away
for almost eight weeks summer camp. My son but six.
So they all need that. They've been on their cell
phones in the plane. But when we get home, we're
gonna try and all collectively not be on the cells
this weekend, so there will be a beach trip on
a Saturday. I don't know what we're doing on Sunday,

but it'll just be kind of chilling and hanging the
Monday two shows. Dan Patrick show in my show, do
you have a preference on beaches San Diego Central Coast? Well,
we have a Newport beach, so uh, I love. There's
a couple of different beaches in Newport. He loves Dohini
Doheni is his spot because it's super, super chill and
easy to get up in surfing. And you know he's
(01:47:56):
ten years old, so not exactly a big wave surfer.
Very nice. Well, speaking of not being big, here is
Kyler Murray a little sound for you looking at the
big picture. This doesn't you know, this isn't it's not
a big deal. Obviously you want to go out and
look good. They did some things we obviously weren't game
playing for. But you know, we'll go back and I think,
you know, treat this one like a game week or whatever.
(01:48:16):
So try to be better next week. And it's coming
off Murray's performance last night. He was three of eight
twelve yards and sacked a couple of times, including one
for a safety. Yeah, look, I get that they weren't
game you know they we weren't really prepping like it
was a real game. We weren't game planning for anything.
But I also think it's fair to say that there
there should be some automatic adjustments based upon you know,
(01:48:40):
what you see and if if if you're getting pressured
the way he was getting pressured, Um, they're just doing
a little double a gap blitz is coming right at him,
and you know he just had time. He did throw
a couple of decent balls, but he just didn't have time. Yeah,
on deck. You got Minnesota in the following week, the
Denver Broncos. Would you you won't play that one? You
(01:49:02):
don't think? Go play in the fourth one? Would you
play him in the fourth one? Yes? I would play. Well,
it depends on plays next week. If you're not playing
well next week, I would play him and let him,
you know, play him until he's playing good and then
get him out. All right, fair enough? Speaking of playing,
Derwin James will not be playing for a while. Led
Chargers safety in a walking boots suffered a stress fracture,
and today head coach Anthony Lynn said quote, I would
(01:49:23):
like from to play in twenty nineteen, but I don't
know that for sure. That's brutal news for l A Chargers.
That is really brutal. Like we went from all right,
we got a couple of weeks. He'll The problem with
the stress fracture is if you go and you put
a you know, you put a screw in there, one,
it's got a hell before you come back. But it
(01:49:44):
makes it a lot longer of a rehab. But when
you when you rehab it, you've done, you're usually good.
If you don't and you let it heal on its own,
you could spend you know, a month or a month
and a half and then the guy comes back and
he breaks it. So there in lies the rugal news
for him. We go from the gridiron to the hardwood
court in the NBA. How about this for a take.
(01:50:07):
Houston Rockets gerald manager Darryl Moray said, quote, it's just
factual that James Harden is a better score than Michael
and Jeffrey Jordan's end quote. This was made on the
Self Made with Nate Shot podcast. Okay, I mean okay,
I mean like like if you gave Michael Jordan the
ball top of the key and isolated him as the
(01:50:29):
volume of time, there's more possessions there's no power forwards
sometimes no centers in the game. So like if you
don't think you don't think Jordan could get to the rim, Um, yeah,
I'm gonna disagree there. I do think he's he's an
incredible weapon and he's different, unique than anything we've seen.
He can also really pass. But I it's really hard
(01:50:52):
to compare eras because basketball has changed more than any
other sport over the past six to seven years. Back
to the Gridiron, Carolina Panthers are gonna hold out Cam
Newton and also linebacker Luke Quickly tonight in their preseason
game against the Buffalo Bills. Do you like seeing most
of the stars at least play a series or two.
(01:51:12):
I like the offensive guys playing. I mean the defensive guys.
It's all about you know, like Luke Kickley, you don't
need you know he can play. UM. You know, you
may give up some of the him being sharp and
hitting people, UM for the fact that you know Luke
Kickley cannot get another concussion and you absolutely you just
can't have him out there in situations where you can
get hurt. Offensive guys like quarterbacks, wide receivers. I think
(01:51:38):
the line has to play. I think offensive guys. I
like to see him gonna have the continuity, all right,
We'll switch over the defensive side of the ball. Linebackers.
Couple of here Jets inside linebacker Avery Williamson done for
the season torn a c L A m R. I
revealed today. It's a big shot for the New York Jets.
Not good for the Jets, who are slowly but surely
um starting to load up on some talent. This one
(01:52:00):
will obviously set him back. Good news though, for the
Seattle Seahawks. Bobby Wagner has declared himself ready to play
some regular season football. He actually had a procedure earlier
this month on his knee, but said he needed to
get it done either way, so he wanted to get
done as soon as possible. He does hope to at
least play some snaps in preseason action this year. M hmmm,
(01:52:20):
uh yeah, I don't think I helped played just a
little bit. Next week I won't play much fair enough.
And of course the big news that you were talking
about as well, uh, Joseph sie buying the remaining fift
of the Brooklyn Nets. So is all his now, along
with Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving. Yeah, and Mikhail broker
Off makes off with two billion dollars. He didn't even
(01:52:42):
own it ten years, right, No, two two million or
something plus plus debt. It was like three million to
two point three five billion like that a two billion
dollar profit. What would that feel like? Just imagine if
he was like Frank McCort and he's still controlled the
parking lots around the area. Yeah, they're pretty nice. Fame
(01:53:05):
and Court never put any money down everybody else's money.
One quick note Major League Baseball Padres Fernando Tantis Jr.
Could Be done for the maind of the season Backstranth,
but they put him on the TENDAI angelist Kevin ac
Is reporting that he has done for the year. M hmm, alright,
there's your Padres uptake and that's the press. Get out
(01:53:27):
there and pressed. That was the press. How many people
do you think music know that Mike Trout has forty
home runs? Well, us too, and now David Gascon Ryan
Smith because he's not listening. So he's absolutely not listening. Now,
how about the fact that LA and Orange County they
(01:53:47):
have they each have their own forty home run Here
I would say this Bellinger, I think is actually a
more impressive forty. And my logic behind it is that
that's not that's not an easy park to hit him
out of. It's a lot harder, harder park uh to
hit him out of. For Bellinger home, he has twenty
four home home runs and it's supposedly, you know, the
(01:54:09):
ocean air keeps it down. But he's got twenty four
at home. I mean at home, he's hitting three. His
ops is one point one to seven. Wow. But yeah,
I mean like this, it's fascinating. I I I also
think it's fair to say that because of the prodigious
home run numbers around the league, the fact that Trout
and Bellinger have forty is getting overshadowed by people's idea
(01:54:33):
that look the balls juiced, it's bouncing out. I would
only point out that Trout, who doesn't see as many
pitches because he's been walking so much, he's got a
five home run lead on Horace Solaire. That's how much
better he's been than anybody else. Have a great weekend,
watch preseason football. Check me out on The Dan Patrick
Show on Monday. Plus this show, we'll be back on
