Guess What More? Antonio Brown Drama? Now, Jon Gruden has
a choice, Team culture or team talent. Plus, Let's talk
a former NFL general manager to see how he'd handle
Antonio Brown's situation and get his thoughts on Jared Goff's
huge contract. Let's do it. What Up? Tug Gotlip Show,
(00:44):
Fox Sports Radio coming to you from the Sunny City,
Red Hot City of Angels in Los Angeles, California. The
Doug Gotlap Show is brought to you by Farmers. At Farmers,
we've seen almost everything, so when to cover almost anything
when it's game time, having experience his player help you
stay at the game. Put their experience in the plant
Farmers dot Com. We are Yeah. So all we're gonna
(01:08):
talk about is tonight's game, Right, Packers Bears oldest rivalry
in the NFL hundredth year of the NFL kick off
to the NFL. That's the wait what what? Oh? Antonio
Brown could be suspended and they could get all of
their money back because he threatened to take a swing
(01:30):
at his general manager. Oh wait, wait wait, let's go
to Oakland and find out what Mike Mayok had to say.
Antonio Brown is not in the building today. It won't
be practicing. I don't have any more information for you
right now. And when I have something, it becomes appropriate,
you guys will all get it, I promise you. But
that's it for today. Today is Today is Wednesday. Wednesday
(01:52):
is game planned day. Now. Granted it could be different
because they play on Monday, not on Sunday like everybody else.
Und lass, this is the day which game plans are
installed in the National Football League. And when you don't
have your star wide receiver, well that's no big deal
because it hasn't been a rocky preseason, right Antonio Brown
(02:15):
has been Oh wait, wait a second, hold on. Forget
about Pittsburgh and the fact that he quit on his
team and then didn't play Week seventeen and then ultimately
was traded from Pittsburgh. Forget about all that. Since he's
arrived in Oakland. He burned his feet in a cryo
chamber and had a very slow recovery at that. Then
(02:40):
he sued the league not once, but twice to use
a helmet that the league had ruled you could not use.
He was called out previously by Mayok. Going back to
the second time he went after the helmet thing, he
not only no showed on practice and got fine for it,
you know, showed on a walkthrough in Winnipeg, Canada when
(03:03):
he was in Winnipeg, Canada and got fine for it. Ah.
But weight there's more. What led to this was he
posted the fine letter on social media and was critical
of the team doing it. We have got this. It
becomes a now issue, and frankly, Antonio Brown did the
(03:25):
Raiders a favorite, a favor. He did him a favor.
If he did this after week one of the season,
because he's a veteran, contract could become fully guaranteed. But
because he did it now, the Raiders can suspend him
and ultimately cut him for conduct detrimental and potentially recoup
(03:48):
all of that money. This is not a Mike Mayock decision.
This is a John Gruden decision. But the decision is
pretty clear. Do you side with your general manager and
with your culture or do you side with your player?
That's it, because look, players aren't stupid, even though they
(04:12):
know Antonio Brown might be their most talented player. The
idea that Mike me that you can square off with
Mike Mayock. You can mock Mike Mayock's fines and still
keep your job when the team has the ability to
get out of your contract. If Gruden does it, he
loses his front office. And I don't think he loses
(04:37):
the team if he cuts Antonio Brown. Frankly, I think
he has its potential to lose the team if he
doesn't cut Antonio Brown. These are the moments, and this
is why you have a ten year deal because you
have to be willing to every once in a while.
Ago that was a bad deal. Let's cut him because
it's not like if you keep him it's going to
(04:59):
get better. Right, Clearly, Antonio Brown has no no care
for authority. Remember actually, Jason Wentlock joined us last week
and he had this to say about a b Maybe
he doesn't want to play football, man, And that's a
hard thing for someone that's been as competitive and as
(05:21):
successful as him to admit, and so he shows it
to you in other ways. You guys are both married.
You guys are both old enough to have had friends
that a spouse wants out of a marriage. They don't
come directly to the spouse and say I want a divorce.
They started showing it to you in behavior, I want out.
(05:45):
That's what you're looking at. What a b He's made
enough money a few years ago, Voltez Burfett put him
into protocol program and he wants no more of that.
I don't actually think that's what it is. I think
Antonio Brown is a social media problem, and that social
media constantly tells athletes they're right. Authority is wrong, right,
(06:08):
go look at social media. The President's the biggest idiot
on earth. Congress a bunch of idiots. CEO is massively overpaid, egomaniacs,
heads of heads, commissioners of the NFL are bad. Are
evil owners owners owners, modern day slave owners and see
(06:29):
a modern day slave owners and c A is bad.
All of these things are bad. All of these people
have issues with authority. It's like it's like a generation
of people with mom and dad and authority issues. And
it all comes out with support for people who go
(06:49):
against the green, go against the grain. The NFL is racist.
Do you know what eve means? Ten non white starting
quarterbacks in the NFL. That's ten out of thirty two.
You do the math. Okay, it's the highest percentage we
have ever had week one in the National Football League ever,
(07:12):
and it's only gonna get higher because the position is
changing and evolving, and our ability to coach young players
black players to being quarterbacks, which is a position of
affluence in order to get that quality coaching, is in
fact changing. The league's not racist. The league doesn't like
(07:34):
pains in the asses. It's a team sport. And Antonio
Brown is not a teammate. He's a me guy. It's
part of this generation. I don't think it has anything
to do with him playing football. I think he wants
to play football his way and I don't think that's
how the NFL rolls. And if you look at every
one of these issues, it comes down to did he
(07:58):
do what the what authority told him to do? Hey,
why didn't you wear some socks and booties when you're
in the cryod chamber because I didn't feel like it?
Why won't you just wear the new helmet. I don't
like to do what I'm told. Then when he was
told what to wear, he tried to find a way
around those rules and tried to find another helmet, which
(08:19):
essentially his helmet, even though it wasn't his helmet, and
that was shot down. And now he gets caught mocking
the very authority who pays him, who signs his check,
and gets called on it, and wants to go to blows.
Antonio Brown doesn't not want to play football. He's just
(08:41):
part of this social media generation that thinks they're always right,
that authority is wrong. And if you don't believe him,
go to social media now and find out how Mike
by ox an idiot because he's never been a GM before.
Everybody's dumb except the players accept the people who go
(09:01):
against the green. That's what he is. And now John
Gruden has to deal with it. John Gruden has to
make what I think is an incredibly difficult decision. Do
you admit you were wrong and you get rid of
Antonio Brown and support your general manager, or do you
support Antonio Brown and basically tell Mike Mayock that nothing
(09:26):
he says, nothing he does, no way in which he
feels his authority does not matter. That's where the Raiders are, which,
by the way, is probably the most raider thing ever. Right,
this feels like a raider's story. The Raiders are. Look,
they went to Vegas. They had a plan, just gonna
(09:51):
just a thousand bucks, thousand bucks, thousand bucks, three day weekend.
The least I'm gonna go down as a thousand bucks.
That's my entertainment cost. That's my bonus from last Christmas.
I've been saving up right now. The rooms are cheap.
There's the fight this weekend. I'm gonna go there Friday, Saturday,
(10:11):
leave Sunday morning, so don't get caught in traffic on
I fifteen coming back. I'm gonna leave super early. Thousand
bucks is the least I'm gonna go down. And we
haven't even gotten to the season yet. We haven't even
gotten to where you're you're sitting in the sports book
on a Saturday or a Sunday getting ready to watch
the NFL. We haven't gotten that part yet, and or
Thursday night to bet on tonight's game. And now you
(10:37):
now you're down a grand Do you stick to what
your plan was? Or do you go to the A
T M and take out five. That's where the Raiders are.
That's where the Raiders are. Mark Slayer's the three time
Super Bowl champion. We'll ask him if he's even the
(10:59):
least at surprised what he thinks the Raiders do. Is
there a way out of it for Gruden without cutting
Antonio Brown? We discussed next. Be sure to catch live
editions of The Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon
Eastern three pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
i Heart Radio app Doug Got Leave Show, Fox Sports Radio.
(11:19):
He's a three time Super Bowl champion, He's an NFL
on Fox analyst. He's a wealth of football wisdom. He's
the one only Mark Schlareth, He joins us. Um, I'm
trying to figure out a way for Gruden to avoid
cutting Antonio Brown, right, because cutting him would mean that
(11:41):
cutting him would mean that you admit fault. And by
the way, you're getting rid of your arguably most talented
offensive player, but keeping him well, keeping him with nullify
Mike Mike Mayocks power completely right. I mean, it would
just um and any kind of culture you're trying to establish,
it wouldn't matter because of all of the different transcussions,
(12:02):
even that preceded that before yesterday. What do you think
Gruden can do to keep him but not completely lose
his general manager? Well, I think done. Ultimately, you've got
to suspended. They talked about suspending him. I don't know
exactly what that's going to look like. What that I mean,
it can't be one of those you're not going to
(12:24):
start the first quarter suspensions, right. It can't be the
fake suspension because then you completely, you completely get yourself
back into a Steeler situation where you're acquiescing to one
guy who's just a selfish turd, and you can't do that.
I mean, this is the ultimate team game. And Antonio Brown,
(12:44):
for whatever reason, doesn't understand that ten other guys on
offense have to do their job exceptionally well for him
to sniff a football. And I don't understand where the
self importance were, the over evaluation of what your skill
set is. You're playing and probably the most dependent position
in football, where ten other guys have to do their
(13:05):
job for you to have to even to even make
a play. I don't understand how that's gotten so out
of whack. I don't understand that mentality at all. But
this has gotta be a real suspension. You've got to
miss a game, and you've got to say do you
want to be a part of this team or do
you not want to be a part of this team?
And ultimately you have to understand it's it's the team sport.
(13:27):
You've got to be willing to sacrifice for your teammates.
I always say that I said to my kid when
you know he started his professional baseball career, was just
because you play a pro sport doesn't make you a
professional man. You've got to come to work every day
and be a professional. And he certainly, um, he certainly
has fallen short in that category. And if you continue
to allow it and enable it, it will continue to happen.
(13:49):
And if it continues to happen, eventually you alienate the
rest of your football team. So they're in my mind,
they're in a very precarious position right now. Um, and
this is like, but the next couple of steps for
them is really is this is the most important decision
they're gonna make this football season. So what would you do?
How do you do? Because if you suspend him, you
(14:11):
could get your money back, You could potentially get out
of this thing. Now he actually did you a favor.
He did you a favor trying to get out of it.
What would you do, well, I would suspend him, but
you know my ultimately I was suspending for a game
I wouldn't want to play on Monday night. And then
you know I would evaluate. I would to have a
sit down and say, do you want to be a
(14:32):
part of this team or do you want to move on?
Um and listen, they are far more talented than they
were a year ago, without question, But make no bones
about it, that guy is one of the most supremely
gifted athletes on the face of the planet. I mean
he is. He's amazing, nothing short of amazing. But you know,
(14:55):
he just feels to me to be one of those
guys that he doesn't really care about winning as long
as he's compiling statistics. And ultimately, when you do that,
the only thing you win is is you know, fantasy games.
And this is not a fantasy league. This is this
is for real. And I don't know about the rest
(15:15):
of the guys on the Raiders, but if I played
on the Raiders, uh, losing sucks. It is awful. I
want to win, and I want guys that are committed
to winning and guys that will sacrifice, like I'm going
to sacrifice for them, and if they're not willing to
do that, if it's about you know, hey, man, I
had twelve targets and ten catches a hundred sixty seven
yards today and two touchdowns and we lost by two
(15:38):
scores and you're happy to plan. Well, you know what,
you don't really serve much of a purpose for our
football team, your staff compiler, and you've got to make
a decision after a one week's suspension. Do you want
to contribute to this team and abide by the team
rules or do you just want to go find somewhere
else to go, because ultimately you know what's gonna happen.
(15:58):
I mean, this is a guy that is so gifted,
and you'll put up organizations, will put up with the
headaches as long as the production is great. But there's
gonna come a time when you no longer can produce,
and you're not gonna get a couple of years at
the end of your career. People are gonna walk away
and say, Austin La Vista see around sometime and your
fall from grace is gonna be hard, it's gonna be sudden,
(16:19):
and it it's gonna be loud. Mark Laire, three times
Super Bowl champion, joining us on the Gottlieb Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, let's get to the Dallas
Cowboys who yesterday signed zeke Y Eelliott biggest contract in
history for a running back. Is the way in which
he was handled the right way for the Cowboys for
the short and long term future. Well, I mean, ultimately, yeah,
(16:42):
I think that. I think that's interesting for the Cowboys,
like you postured, Like the thing that bothered me about
Jerry Jones is you're signing Jalen Smith, the kid who's
got an unbelievable story, right, I mean, this is a
kid who was gonna be a top five overall draft choice.
Tears up his knee, they think you ever play again
in a bowl game, comes back, rehabs his foot off,
(17:03):
like just grinds for a couple of years to get
his opportunity to get himself back right and healthy. What
a great story. And then you have a press conference
you signed to this new deal. He finally gets kind
of that first round money, more than that first round
money that would have gotten him and it's a great
story and you use it to try to send a
message to Zeke and the pie and the whole thing. Right,
like that was a really crazy That's to me, was
(17:24):
a really crappy way to celebrate this kid in his accomplishments. Right,
let's have a press conference and let me talk about
in the pie and this license and how other guys
better fall in the line, you know, I mean, I
thought that was really poorly handled. That part was poorly handled.
I get all that. But here's why players love Jerry Jones.
Why the guys who played for the Dallas Cowboys loves
Jerry Jones because he had a hundred percent of the leverage.
(17:48):
He had two years left on that deal. He could
have franchised him for two more years and instead made
the highest paid running back in football, and guys respect that.
There's no question he's great, and there's no USh and
it's an admission that Jerry Jones is saying, Hey, we
built this We structure this football team based on a
great offensive line or run game, and that's our formula
(18:09):
for success. And I recognize it, and I'm gonna pay you.
And ultimately, you know, the thing I heard too and
I don't even know if it's true because as you research,
I just heard it that they signed this gigantic deal
and their cap value actually went down. They actually gained
money on their cap. So any owner, they cries the
poorhouse and cries the victim when it comes to salary
captain straints is full of crap because if you want
(18:32):
to manipulate your cap you can. Now you're gonna mortgage
some of your future. But if you've got a window
to do it, you can do it. So don't don't cry.
You know, salary cap you know purgatory to me. You
can make it work. But like I said, you may
mortgage some of the future. Yeah, I mean, yes, your
salary cap. It's like the Lao Collins deal can freed
(18:52):
up cap space, but eventually that cap space will be
used some year. Right, And it's as you know, at
some point, at some point, you you can't just rob
Peter to pay Paul. At some point, robbing Peter does
end up, you know, coming back kind of to get
you Mark Layer at three times. Here here's the deal.
You're right, right, but the Cowboys haven't won anything since
(19:13):
Eightman was playing corton Tex. So you know at some
point you gotta be willing to say and maybe Rob
and Peter and Painball isn't all that bad idea if
we've got a three year window where we feel like
we can win a championship. Fair enough? Fair enough? Uh,
Mark Layer joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. All right, let's let's get let's
get to Melvin Gordon. Now, Melvin Gordon, obviously he's hot
(19:37):
because the Chargers now they pulled the offer they said
he had till Saturday, he didn't take the offer, and
now a sudden zeke Is has by his estimation, driven up,
driven up the value. What do you think about how
the Charges are handling this well, I think the charges
are like two different scenarios. From the value that I
placed on the two running backs, I can make a
(19:58):
compelling argument that the is the best in the league.
I mean, he had what twelve yards or whatever he
had rushing and he had seventy seven catches. I believe,
and I mean the guy, the guy is amazing. He's
an amazing athlete. I thought coming out of the draft
he was one of the best blizz pickup backs I've
ember watched. Coming out of college football. So here's a
(20:19):
true third down or three down back. I should say.
I think Melvin Gordon is a good player. I don't
think he's close to Zack or is the excuse me? Um,
I just don't. I think he's a good player. I
think I look at his history. One season that he's
been involved with the Sandio Chargers are the l A Chargers.
Excuse me? He has he's one time on sixteen games
(20:41):
where he's played in sixteen games. Um, last year was
the last year was the first, honey, he ever averaged
over four yards of carry in those those previous seasons. Um,
what what? What else about him? You know, he's just
he He is a good player, but he's not a
dying amic player in my mind. And he's never you know,
(21:03):
experienced great health. And so I think at some point,
you gotta be realistic with your own skill set, like
you have to understand your strengths and your weaknesses. You
have to understand the market. You have to understand your
value out there. And I think the Chargers said I
heard them say, I think a one and a five
they want in in exchange from Melvin Gordon with a
(21:27):
running back in the condition he's been in with the
microfractured needs that he's that he's had surgery on. Like,
there's nobody given you a one and a five from
Melvin Gordon. I think that's I think it's crazy talk.
So um, you know, I think you've got to understand
kind of your lot in life. And hey, we'd all
we'd all like to break the bank, right, we'd all
(21:48):
like to get to get paid. But you know, I
understand that I'm not gonna make as much money as
a quarterback in the broadcasting business, even if I'm better
than that quarterback, because that quarterbacks played quarterback. Can I
played guard? Like, I get it right, I'm gonna take
less money. I understand it, all right. Is it fair? No,
it's life being fair. It's just the way life works sometimes.
(22:12):
Mark Layre, three times Super Bowl champion, joining us in
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right, let'
let's srink around a couple other uh couple other NFL notes. Um,
tonight we got Packers taken on the Bears. How do
you think Aaron Rodgers fits with this new offense? Yeah,
that remains that that's kind of remains to be seen.
I think they'll figure out, you know, they'll figure out
(22:35):
um kind of a great balance. Hopefully they'll figure out
a great balance for Aaron Rodgers and floor to kind
of meet in the middle. That's a West Coast offense.
Where West Coast offense and the way it the way
it operates, Doug is, you know a lot of the
a lot of the plays are kind of check with
me plays or what they call cant in the office
or in the in that offense. So he says, you'll
(22:56):
call one play, and he say, if we get this, look,
we're to run this play. If we get this, we're
gonna tan it and we're gonna and we're gonna run
this play instead. So the audible is really one. It's
the quarterback walks up and if he gets to look,
he just says saying, cannon, cannon, cannon. You know blue
a team, blue a team set, huh, and you run
that play. The beauty of that and I know it's
(23:18):
not as mentally challenging for the quarterback, right, but the
beauty of it is all leving guys walk into the
line of scrimmage and they see what they see, they
see the same thing and they know what the checks are.
They know what's gonna what's gonna get them out of
a play. So what ends up happening to you? For
me as an offensive lineman because I played in the system,
you walk up there and you see safety rotation and
(23:38):
you know the safety rotation is a key, and you're like,
oh good, we got this play and you're getting your
stance and now you already know, so you don't have
to sit and wait in your stance and say, maybe
I gotta adjust my stance a little bit cheap. My
stance is gonna be a throw, is gonna be is
gonna be a run? I don't know, you know. And
so everybody can get off on the staff count and
can play football and can still be smash froll even
though you're running an audible of them just to get
(24:01):
up the line of scrimmage. And you know have the
you know, have the machinations and and the history on
its of you know, calling plays and shooting hands sick
goals and being Peyton Manning and omahamahamaha. Is for an
offensive linement, it sucks. It's a terrible system. You hate
it because you're sitting there waiting for him to call
a play and we all cheat our stance and it
(24:23):
just makes it hard to be aggressive. Like I always
used to like to say, I'd like to take the past,
the passive out of past protection. You just have to
play a more passive role in that system. So you
think it works. I think it'll work. I think they'll
find a balance. I think there'll be some times where
they just get to run straight two minutes, you know,
come in and and and not so much a two
(24:43):
minutes but a no huddle where he gets control at times.
But I think there's they're gonna try to find a balance.
Here's the thing about all these games, though, Doug, especially
tonight's games, like this time of the season, when nobody's
really played offensively and nobody's really into a great rhythm
as an offense. Um, you know, I'm always gonna lean
on the defensive side of the football earlier in the
(25:04):
season because those guys can just pin their airs back
and go and there's nobody can do it any better
than Chicago. So, um, you know, it's always I think
this is a work in progress, and it may take
a couple of weeks before they find that kind of
fine balance in that fine rhythm between play caller and
between quarterback Mark Laire, three times Super Bowl champion, joining us.
All right, what about the Bears? Is there more in
(25:26):
Mitch Trobinsky or is this who he is? No? I
think there's I think there's more in Mitch Trobinski, And
I think I look a lot too to Matt Maggie.
His his play caller and his head coach and coordinator.
UM is a fabulous football coach. And he understands matchups.
(25:46):
He understands how to create matchups. He understands how to
give his quarterback, you know, eight to twelve easy completion
to gain, how to give him, you know, opportunities to
get the chunk yardage plays, you know, the explore osis.
And so I think you'll see um Mr Trobinsky continue
to progress UM. And a lot of that is because
(26:08):
he's with a coach who I think can really help
him in that maturation process. I don't think you know
he's ready to be an elite quarterback yet, but I
think you'll see him take another step. Um. Does that
mean the offense takes a step forward? Does that mean
the defense without Vic Fangio still plays at as high
a level Like that? I can't answer you. I just
(26:29):
know they were really talent with a football team, and
I think I think Mitch Trobinski will continue to progress
because I think Matt Magi's a hell of a football coach.
Jared Goff sign is the biggest contract in the history
of the sport at the quarterback position. Do you like
Jared Goff long term with the Rams? I do like
Jared Goff. I think he's got more wins in the
last two years or ties for the most wins in
(26:50):
the last two years and twenty four he's got I believe,
more three yard games anybody. And again I'll say I
like Jared Goff mostly because I think his code really
understands offense and how to give his quarterback opportunities to succeed,
like how to get great matchups. And like I think,
I think it's a quarterback position. Uh. You look at
(27:11):
this league historically, and I haven't done a historical breakdown
or anything, but you start looking at the tandems, the
quarterback and the head coach. When you have stability, when
you have um communication, and when you have kind of
a philosophical approach, and you watch those two guys go
down the road like you know Drew Brees, and you
(27:32):
know Drew Brees and Sean Paynton, Bill Belichick and Tom Brady, um,
you know when it was Peyton Manning, Um, you know,
and Tony Dungee. You've got that stability. When you have
that stability between head coach and quarterback, you've got a
chance to have long term success. And I think you
have that with with the Rams. And I've told you
(27:55):
this before, man. I sat down with Sean McVeigh the
first time I ever sat down with him to do
one of his games for Fox, and he walked out
of the room. I think he was I don't even
know if he's thirty one at that point, and I
just looked at the rest of the crew and said
and basically said, I'm a loser. I've never accomplished anything
about life like that's that guy is. There's two types
of people in the world, those who energize the room
(28:17):
when they walk in it and those who energize the
room when they walk out of it. And that dude
walked into that room and there was a different sense
of energy. You just felt it. He had dynamic And
I'm telling you what, that guy can talk football like
nobody's business, and you just felt like, that's the dude
I'd like to play for. Mark Slayer joining us in
the Doug Gotlib Show here on Fox Sports Radio. All right, uh,
(28:41):
we we've asked you every week about teams that no
one else is talking about. Um, I'll give you a
list of four other teams, and you tell me your
favorite of those four teams. Okay, um? All right? Uh Falcons, Vikings, Lions,
um or Chargers go UM. I really like the Vikings.
(29:10):
I think the Vikings Defensively, I think Mike Zimmer is tremendous.
I know all the guys who have played for Mike
Zimmer love him. He understands gap assignment, gap control. He's
great from a play calling standpoint and understanding how to
put his guys in positions of leverage, UM, anticipating what
the offense is going to run. Like, I think Mike
(29:32):
Zimmer is a great coach. I think that defense, Um,
I think that defense is tremendous. So those those things
I think are great. Uh, I think they're great. So
I would say that the Vikings, and I think offensively,
you look at the running game. Gary kubiak Um is
going to be the kind of the pseudo coordinator out there. Um,
(29:55):
Gary is one of those guys that I have a
lot of faith in that. You know that that I
think when Kirk Cousins came into the league, he worked
under Mike Shanahan, he worked in that style of offense.
I think the Minnesota Vikings are gonna win that division.
Actually awesome stuff. That's March Layer, three times Super Bowl
champion NFL on Foxwood game this week I've got I've
(30:16):
got Kyler Murray and the Cliff Kingsbury's and versus Detroit.
So it'll be interesting to see how exactly that offense looks,
you know, And he said, do you think it will work? Um,
I think they'll I think they're they're gonna they're gonna
move the ball occasionally. I think they're gonna have trouble
in the red zone because I think that offense is
gimmicky when it comes to red zone type of football
(30:39):
when the field gets compressed. And and you know, Kyler
Murray has has been okay. There's no question about his
talent as athleticism is armed talent. Um. I think he's
been okay this preseason, but I think there's a big
learning curve ahead, staying great stuff, Enjoy the game. We'll
talk to you soon. Sounds good. Be good. Guess who
(31:01):
will be your two thousand nine NFL m v P.
I'll tell you next. Be sure to catch live editions
of the Doug got Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern
three pm Pacific Doug gotlic Show, Fox Sports Radio every
day at this time. We like to we like to
get as many topics in as possible we do. Somebody
playing a game. This is game time, Tide on the
(31:26):
Doug got Leap Show, Dan Yer, what's the game you
of your choosing today? Doug? The game today is Guests, Alright, Guests,
su pretty much focused on the upcoming NFL season has
been online. Has released a bunch of odds, not only
team specific, but also individual awards specific. So we'll see
(31:47):
how you do in these categories. Dog, let's start, guests.
Who is the odds on favorite to be the NFL's
MVP in twenty nineteen, Patrick Mahomes, Yeah, that is correct,
five to one, odds, easily of distancing Carson Wentz of
the Eagles, who was listed at nine to one. Yeah.
I mean, there's not a lot of creativity there. Right.
(32:08):
Last year, Wentz would have won the year before. It's
not usually the way it works, but it's the way
we think it's gonna work. And the regression of Mahomes.
Even if he doesn't get the fifty, you still think
that he's probably in the conversation guess who Doug is
the odds on favorite to be the NFL's Defensive Player
of the Year. Mm hmmm, odds on favorite defensive player
(32:30):
of the Year. I will say this, there are two
players who are mean. Aaron Donald would be one and
the other would be J. J. Watt. I would guess, uh,
Joey Bosa gotta be somebody gets a lot of sacks tonight.
Oh oh, Khalil Max Sorry, yeah, Khalil Mack is listed
(32:52):
at five to two. Aaron Donald has three to one odds,
where J. J. Watt, Miles Garrett they are at ten
to one. Yeah, I would like I would like Joey
Bosa in that argument. Um. My logic behind it is
Bosa didn't play a full season last year, but look
at the productivity in all the seasons he's had, and
he does have Melvin Ingram on the other side. Um,
(33:14):
so I think he's gonna put up big numbers this year,
and I think so too. He was my pick on
my pick set. By the way, everyone agreed with yesterday
that we unveiled here on the Doug gott Leap Show.
Everybody or true yeah yeah, we was no. Basically no
one agreed with and then was called names for them.
But hey, it comes to the territory, right. Guess who
(33:35):
is the odds on favorite to win the NFL Coach
of the Year award. This one's always a little trickier
Coach of the Year or Coach of the Year or
the coach of the odds on favorite Coach of the year.
I would not have guessed this name if I was
playing the game. Wow, that's really hard. Um, I probably
(33:56):
would have named sixteen other coaches before Jason Garrett. No,
by the way, I think that that's that actually be
a smart bet if you would, just because they said
they're gonna be good. Yeah he's one right now, Um,
coach of the Year. I'll give you one more shot,
because I can I Can I get it? Can I
get a hint? Um NFC coach that Niro's half the
(34:21):
no right division? Okay, okay, yeah, because Piel think they're
gonna be good. Yeah, and if they, you know, come
from the bottom and rise up ten to one odds.
Freddie Kitchens of the Browns is eleven to one, and
then the two coaches who are in Super Bowl fifty three,
Sean McVeigh and Bill Belichick, both listed at twelve to one,
(34:44):
with the third best odds guests who doug is the
odds on favorite to win the NFL Offensive Rookie of
the Year award, Tyler Murray eight to five. David Montgomery,
who you'll see tonight, listed at five to one, as
is Josh Jacobs. Devin Singletary of the buffal Little Bills.
Now that that backfield has opened up with la Shawn
McCoy not there, him and Frank Gore gonna be splitting
(35:05):
the carries. But you not only expect Singletary, who was
by Offensive Rookie of the Year choice, to get carries,
you also expect the Bills to run the ball a lot. Yeah.
The problem is that Bills, like Raiders, you'd also think
they'll be behind a lot late, and that's allowed them
to throw the football. That's why Kyler Murray, you would
think would win it is is because they're a bad team.
They're gonna have to throw it a ton and he'll
(35:25):
put up a bunch of stats even at their empty stats.
It was really kind of se Kwon Barkley situation year. Yeah,
which just goes counter to it. The Giants were committed
to running the football, and they ran the football. They
did have that late spurt where the we're winning some games,
so that that helped him. But yes, a guess who,
doug are currently tied for the best odds to win
(35:45):
Super Bowl fifty four. So two teams have the same
odds to win Super Bowl fifty four, the Chiefs and
the Patriots, and a double yep for that for both
of them, as they are the odds on favorite too.
I was almost going to say, cut down the nets,
but you're not gonna be doing that, Miami, lift the
(36:06):
Lombardi to lift the Lombardy. Alright, veering off from some
odds because we do have some guests who's when it
comes to the NFL guests who unveiled a brand new
T shirt today after a joke in the preseason or
that was based off of a joke made in the
preseason by an NFL owner. Oh, Dallas Cowboys, Yeah, Cowboys
running back Ezekiel Elliott revealing a T shirt today and
(36:29):
his introductory press conference with Jerry Jones. Remember Jerry said,
Zeke who And then now that was on the front
of the T shirt. You turn the T shirt around
it on the back it has Zeke leaping and then
it says that's who in in Navy. Looks like a
sharp shirt if you're a Cowboys fan, one of those
unique ones. And uh, Doug finally, and so this tidbit
(36:51):
come across in Baseball guests. Who was advising Astro shortstop
Carlos Correa on his future as Correa is about to
sign with a new agent. Um, I'll go with I'll
go with Alex rodriguezs Yes, very good. In fact, Corea
could be signing with a Rod's representation, at least the
(37:11):
one who represented him and getting his new TV deal
with ESPN and possibly with Fox. But Carlos Correa, uh yeah,
getting the lended ear from one Alex Rodrie. The Alex
Rodriguez personal turnaround is pretty remarkable. Like he literally didn't
do anything other than start dating j Lo, Like that's it.
(37:32):
And now he's on two networks and he's a Rod Corp.
And like the docu. You guys seen the documentary about
the uh about the what was the name of the
place where he not that Balco the place where he
got his biogenesis? Have you seen the documentary on Netflix
about it? No? I mean it makes him look like
(37:53):
just the biggest clown ever and nobody seems to care.
So yeah, I mean it's really crazy. This is game
time on the Doug god Leave Show. Just it just
makes it. It's kind of a silly look at it,
but it's pretty interesting just on how he didn't care.
(38:14):
You know, the guy, Um, the guy Anthony Shoot whim,
I'm like blanking his name, um Anthony bosh Right. He goes,
meets a Rod, goes to his hotel room and this
is right after Man Ramirez has been suspended with the Dodgers,
and he opens the door. In the first thing he
says is I want what man he was taking. That's it.
(38:35):
That's it. Former NFL running back Rashad Jennings joins the show,
coming next, what does he think of the Antonio Brown
situation and of Zeke Yellett's contract. Fox Sports Radio has
the best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all

(38:55):
to listen live Boom, What Up America, Doug Got Leave
show Fox Sports Radio coming to you from the sunny
City of Angels, Los Angeles, California, and we are mere
hours away from the NFL season kicking off. We don't
know whether Antonio Brown will be in uniform on Monday night,
but it does not look good. More on that to come.
(39:17):
Bears Packers tonight has one of my two super Bowl teams. Yes,
I said super Bowl teams. That's because I believe the
Packers will be in the super Bowl. We we we
never had Lebron against Kobe in the Super Bowl. I'm
hoping that. I'm just hoping, hoping that we have Patriots
(39:40):
Packers the most accomplished quarterback of all time versus the
most talented and maybe best quarterback of all time in
Aaron Rodgers. That's what I'm hoping for. I think Kansas
City has got a legit shot because they are loaded
on offense. But stop me if you heard this before,
but Andy Reid struggles in the playoffs, and I think
(40:02):
the Patriots defense has gotten it was good AND's gotten better.
The kans City Chiefs defense was bad and has gotten decent.
So put me down for Packers Patriots, even though I
think the Patriots are gonna get off to a slow start.
So we've got a lot to talk about in terms
of running backs with Zeke signing yesterday and Melvin Gordon
(40:25):
still holding out because his money's not anywhere near Zeke's. Plus,
we have the Antonio Brown socket. If you're just sitting
down your car and your cubicle, or you're just turning
on the app for the first time, take a listen
to this. Antonio Brown yesterday yesterday posted on his Instagram
when we talked about this, a letter that talked about
(40:50):
the fines he had received from the Oakland Raiders. One
of those fines was for nearly fourteen thousand dollars for
no showing for a walk through in Winnipeg, Canada. Remember
they played a preseason game in Winnipeg, Canada on an
eight yard field. He went to Winnipeg, didn't go to
the walkthrough, and then posted about it on Instagram. He
(41:13):
was confronted, reportedly confronted by Mike Mayock at the facility
and they were about to go to blows and the
guy to hold him back, wait for it, Vontes Perfect,
because Vontes Perfect is crazy, but he's not stupid. And
Tonio Brown appears to be a little bit of both.
(41:36):
And had he swung, I could almost guarantee, but it
could trend the way of Antonio Brown could lose all
his money because conduct detrimental if suspended before the first
game of the season, could lead to them getting back
their signing bonus, which is all the thirty million dollars.
(41:59):
Former Felt running back Rashad Jennings joined the show on
The Doug Gatlup Show on Fox Sports Radio. You played
long enough, you saw some things. You ever seen a
guy try and take a swing at a general manager? Um,
I haven't. I haven't seen that yet. Um. Definitely haven't
seen a player take a swing at the GM. UM.
(42:19):
I've seen some multiplications, but yeah, never swing. What do
you think ultimately happens with the Raiders. Uh, well, they've
got a couple of options. UM. I think I'm assuming. UM,
it's a high probability that the language within the side
of the contract UM allows them to if he if
(42:39):
he has an issue with UM, some of some of
his players could get suspended and he can actually breach
his contract and they can actually let him go taken
away some of the guaranteed money. Guaranteed money is different
between guaranteed E D money. Um, you gotta guarantee if
you do X, Y and Z and if you buy
(43:01):
by these rules. UM, guaranteed is depending on if you're healthy, UM,
if you are eligible to play, et cetera. So it's
it's a weird language that happens inside of contract. And
I think that it sounds like that the Raiders did
their homework before signing him, so they would have the
(43:22):
final say. Yeah, it does feel like there's a Gruden
has to make a choice here between his general managers player.
Doesn't he like, I guess he could suspend him and
they they're going to suspend them before the first game
because that allows them the possibility of this. Otherwise, if
he's if he's on the roster day one as a veteran,
then he gets he gets all of that money that's
he gets becomes fully guaranteed based upon how the CBA works.
(43:47):
But doesn't he basically choose right between the general manager
and his player in this situation? He said, do they
have to do? The team have to choose between the
gym and uh, well Gruden does the like Gruden runs
the shop right, Like we'd all agree it was up
to mcmayoch. I'm sure Mike Maya could cut him, but
make Maya I can't in charge. Crudin's in charge and
(44:07):
Mayo essentially underneath him. But doesn't he kind of have
to choose because if if he doesn't cut Antonio Brown,
he's basically saying that Mike Mayock doesn't mean anything. But
I don't think you have to hut them. Um, you know,
I think you can handle stuff within the house. Um
if if, if it smooths over, the relationship can be
(44:27):
smoothed O. But obviously we can take it out of proportion.
People have the moments, people blow up, one could say,
but it's it's been almost every other week. It's think
he's in the media for something outside of playing football
at the high level, which is very well incapable of
doing so. I think, uh, they they can keep them,
(44:49):
Um will they do? They want to um with the
veteran guarantee that he if he's there for the firstmaster
anthem um. A lot of things to play itself out,
and they're gonna have to make the decision relatively quick
Doug Gotli show here on Fox Sports Radio, Rashad Jennings joins, us,
I know every running back will champion running backs getting
(45:11):
paid more money. What do you think about how the
Dallas Zeke Elliott ended up playing out? I love it.
I love it. Pay he got everything you wanted, um,
busmona and you did not have to go to training camp.
He's gonna be healthy, don't come in and fly around. Um,
he go out. He lost some weight, Um like he
(45:31):
wanted to. This is awesome. Um. I think that they
knew they were going to half the town. Um. I
think they just had to take care of the offensive line. Uh. First, Uh,
you noticed how he got time right for two things.
Obviously you got signed before the first game, and he
got signed right off that that they have the office allotment,
so didn't be good. Um, I think, uh, you know,
(45:55):
and he got paid at a at a big fair
a fair number, which opens up the door for the
running back market. The continuity of the calm um, and
my friend Zuca is definitely one of the guys that
can pushed up m belope. All right, what about Melvin Gordon?
What what should he do now, Well, Melvin Gorton is
going to he has to make a decision. Obviously the
(46:17):
charges you know that they're capable with their stable um
runabout corps that they can handle kind of below without them.
They don't want to I know that, Um, they would
prepare him on the team. I think Melvin Gordon, he's
in a position where he's not going to be able
to get the money he wants. He has to make
a decision that you want to pull a lady on
(46:38):
and hope to get picked up on the team next year.
But he's not. He's not a free agent. He's under
He's had a contract with them for this year and
next year, whereas was at least it was a franchise deal.
Was it was a different deal. Right. But if he
doesn't come, if he comes back next year, if he
comes back next year, Um, it's it's it's a it's
(46:58):
a it's a situation where they can still um fight
for a trade you know, and they can get some
a different, different type of money with him because it's
just a bad relationship. Um. But I think he's gonna
come back. Um, he has to come back before I
think what is a week eight or else he actually
has to start giving money back, which you know, it's
(47:19):
a difference between losing losing money and owing money. And um,
I think after week that he would actually, uh, I
forgive of that so he'll come back. Um, I think
he'll come back within the next week into Yeah, it's
it's you know, it feels like a standoff and the
Chargers were not We're not bluffing at all. Uh. Jared
(47:42):
Goff throws for nearly forty dred yards, but many people
think that's more about his coach and supporting cast than
just Jared Goff four years old and he signs what's
reported a hundred ten million and guarantees. What's your reaction?
That's good? Happy for him? You know if you think
it's if you think it's the coaches um that allowed
(48:02):
him to be able to prosper, well, those coaches aren't
going nowhere. It's a perfect mesh, you know. I mean
a lot of people think, what if you throw Tom
Brady on a different team, you think you're going to
have the same amount of numbers. Sometimes it is finding
that perfect system for perfect teams. Um, the perfect mess
with the combination of the gym head, coach, and quarterback.
(48:24):
I just sin great, um sink. And so if you
say if he found a combination, then by all means
hold it. How do you think Aaron Rodgers fits in
his new offense? Aaron Rodgers in the new offense Aaron Rodgers,
I think just a mini offense. He's a He's a
(48:44):
unique quarterback. He has a skill set that I think
a lot of people, a lot of GMS use me,
even a lot of offensive coordinators. I wish they had
a toy to play with. And um, you know it's
it's going to I think the tight ends and play
a heavy role, UM in the system a lot more.
I think that the run game is going to be
(49:05):
spread out, um a lot more. And um you know
they're gonna have They're gonna I'm anxious to see how
the secondary plays out. But focusing on Aaron Rodgers, he
has the ability to adapt to any system and I think, um,
he seems like, uh, very intelligent quarterback from the distance,
(49:26):
I'm pretty I'm pretty sure that's the truth. State moved
inside of his his his locker room, especially with the
offensive side of the ball, and I think he can
change the offense inside and out. So he's always gonna
find himself in the best position each place, and so
regardless of the system put it in, he's gonna make
it his own. Then you have a kick off Bash
this weekend. Yeah, man, you have a kick off bass.
(49:50):
You got you need to come, Man, you gotta come.
It's gonna be a good one too. Um, it's here,
it's here in Hoboken. Um, it's we're kicking off with
Draft Kings, um, and they have we have a kickoff
and starting off football and obviously with the season starting,
fantasy football starts right, and they're giving away some amazing
(50:12):
process all right, they're giving away ten million dollars worth
of prizes. I've never seen anything like this. You get
a chance to come meet um, some of the guys
that you've watching TV, Sean O'Hara, you get a chance
to hang out with myself. You get to hang out
with the biggest show of Ferguson and also Donovan McNabb.
(50:33):
Um at seventy five dollars a cover charge. It covers
your beverage, it covers your food. The memories, um playing
fantasy football and kicking off, kicking off the season, and
I'm excited and you know every single year. I've only
I've only I did. I was scared to play it
while I played in the first time I played it,
I got hooked to a fantasy football great stuff. If
(50:55):
if in town will hop over in the meantime, tell O'Hara,
I'll see him soon. Love that guy. That's a good
group of guys. Thanks so much for joining us, giving
us your perspective on the National Football League. Yeah, and absolutely,
And I just make sure I want to tell you
how the location is this Sunday. Um it starts to
move and it's a fiddlers piddler's house and beer garden
(51:17):
in a side of Hoboken City, So I'll make sure
you'll come up. Thanks for Shot Shot Jennings joining us
in the Doug Gotleap Show. Doug Gotland Shows brought to
you by Farmers. At Farmers, we've seen almost everything. Soon
not to cover almost anything. It's game time. Have an
experienced player help you stay in the game, put their
experience into play. At Farmers dot com, we are all right.
We spent a lot of time on Antonio Brown today,
(51:38):
but the regular season kicks off tonight. Will the Packers
and Matt lafleur let Aaron Rodgers, be Aaron Rodgers. We'll
discuss next. Be sure to catch live editions of The
Doug Dot Leap Show weekdays at noon Eastern three pm
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio app.
Doug Got Leap Show. You're on Fox Sports Radio. So
(52:00):
this is what happens with pain of the ass wide receivers.
We end up paying attention more to them than substance
stuff like the Raiders aren't gonna set the world on fire.
Nobody thought. No one's picking them to make the playoffs,
although we all concede that they are better this year
than they were last year. Correct. Um, I think there
are bigger topics out there. There are more. This is
(52:24):
why I've challenged so many analysts. Give me another team
that we're not talking enough about. Because we talk about Zeke.
That contract was getting done, Dak Eventually it's getting done
if he's good enough. Right, Melvin Gordon is interesting only
that the Chargers are really really good, but now they
(52:44):
don't have their left tackle, they don't have Derwin James,
and they don't have a Pro Bowl running back. Not
a superstar, but a good, solid, a borderline star running back.
Bigger topics are like tonight, how much was Vic Fangio
responsible for the Bears defense last year and how much
(53:05):
it was just the Bears personnel. And then offensively, Matt
Naggie is a great coach, but has Mitchell Trabisky improved
enough to where after the script runs out he can
still keep that offense moving That wasn't the case for
the most part last year. The other side of the
(53:25):
ball is even more interesting. This from Brett Farve on
Sirius XM NFL Radio. I'm very curious to see how
la Fleur and Aaron get along as the season progresses.
I would hope that Lafleur wouldn't handcuff Aaron too much.
I know he said he's changing the offense, but you
gotta let Rogers play and do his thing, and a
lot of those things he does are not in the
(53:47):
playbook and you don't want to take away from him.
So it'll be interesting the dynamics there at this stage
of Aeron's career. He and I talked about the length
of the offseason. He's at a time right now in
his career when when when I came uh that I
was when he came in. I was going through a
new coaching situation, much like he's going through now, and
so there's this sense of whose team is it? Is
(54:09):
it la Fleur's, is it Aaron Rodgers? And it's not
being braggadocious in any way, but he set the bar
extremely high. I think McCarthy did a great job of
helping that. But make my no mistake, it is Aaron
Rodgers who ultimately made those plays. I think somehow we
get misconstrued in what exactly Matt Lafleur and this Kyle
(54:33):
Shanahan offense is trying to do. Like Aaron Rodgers being
Aaron Rodgers is when Aaron Rodgers breaks the play going
into kind of sand lot football, can he still make
a play? And there's nothing I've read, nothing I've seen
that will prohibit them from that. I think what we're
worried about is we're worried like this will be the
(54:54):
Princeton offense and completely lock him up, completely lock him up.
Whereas I believe, if it's a really good offense and
it can blend to what Aaron Rodgers already does and
simplify what he does before he goes all crazy, Aaron
Rodgers make plays back there, throwing absolute dart while on
the move to his right or left. If it can
(55:15):
simplify that even better, even better, I'm all in on
the Packers. It might be a lot because he's young
head coach, he's not proven, but the idea that it
didn't work in Tennessee last year, that's because he had
Marcus Mariotta, and Mariota is another healthy You have Aaron Rodgers,
(55:37):
and it's one of the reasons I'm picking the Packers tonight.
If all things are equal in Vegas basically thinks this
is a pick him game in a neutral field. If
the Bears are a three point favorite, If all things
are equal equal, then you picked the team of the
best quarterback. That's the Packers. Be sure to catch live
editions of The Doug dot Leap Show week days at
noon Eastern three pm Pacific. Stuck got leave show here
(56:01):
on Fox Sports Radio. He's former number one overall pick,
former Rookie of the Year, he won the league's m VP,
was the youngest winner ever of the m v P
in NBA history, and uh, what an incredible comeback season
he had last year with the Minnesota Timberwolves. He's the
one and only Derrick Rose is a new book out
(56:22):
which he along with Sam Smith, have written. It's called
I'll Show You. Derrick Rose joins us on The Doug
Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Derek, how are you
good man? It's it's it's been a long time since
I was at U I C and Oak Hill Academy
came in with Brandon Jennings and your team and your
(56:44):
team in high school, had like, I'm gonna say one
other d one dude, and you guys beat you guys
beat Oak Hill on national TV. I got a chance
to call that game. Um uh, what from if I
would have told you back then that this would be
your path, what would you see? I would thought you
(57:08):
was crazy, bro, I thought you was insane. But at
the time, UM, I knew that I had to go
and I was willing to do anything to stay on
that path. You. Um, you've always been a really private guy, right.
You have your family exceptionally close to UM. You know,
your coaches you're exceptionally close to. But now last year
(57:31):
there was the documentary that Stadium put out, of course,
and it showed us. It showed us a lot of emotion,
a lot of really you Now there's this autobiography. Why why? Why?
Why let people in now? Um, I think it's time.
This is my twelfth year. Throughout my whole career, I've
been hearing the same question like, oh, same questions, why
(57:53):
aren't you more social? Open up, be vulnerable? And I
felt like it wasn't time until on now, Like like
you said, I've been through a lot. Um, it's about
time that I do be social. My story is very
a complex story. So that's why I put a dock out,
and that's why I'm putting a book out, and I'll
(58:13):
have a lot of content that I still have. Uh,
I'm a share laid on down the line, but I
don't know when. But um, I'm just trying to make
my portfolio as big as possible and give people um
different like versions of me. Um. Obviously, you guys were
you know, two and a half minutes tax seconds away
really from winning a national championship when you're at Memphis. Um, Well,
(58:37):
when you look back at the year under John Calipari,
do you look back now with positivity or do you
look back now as to what could have been? I
feel like, um positive was all positive positivity, I like
throughout my whole career I always had these like Martinette
(58:57):
type of individuals in my life, where they were very hard,
hard nosed people, but I knew at the end of
the day that they wanted me to succeed. And Um
I listened to him and with me going to col Um,
he came to my house. He was the first coach
to driving out, like driving my neighborhood and actually visit
(59:18):
my home. UM talked to my mom and after that conversation,
I knew where I was going. Yeah, obviously got drafted
by your hometown, Chicago Bulls. Do you think it would
have been different had you had to go elsewhere, had
you lived outside of a place that knew you and
loved you but had such high expectations for you. Oh? No,
I think if I would have went somewhere, I think
(59:38):
to Miami or anywhere else, I would have been a
totally different player. Like being in Chicago, like the expectations
of actually being there and actually producing and giving the
people what they want. I think that's what like turn
me or pushed me to the player that I was,
or Um the player I wanted to become because of
(01:00:00):
being at home and not want to be distracted by
you hit the stories of when players like get home,
I mean play home, they get distracted by their friends
and family. Like it was opposite for me when I
was at home, Like I didn't go eat dinners, I
didn't go to concerts. It's a lot of things I
didn't do. I didn't live at the time because I
felt like, um, I needed an advantage over the next person.
(01:00:24):
Did your body let you down? I mean, that's that's
really kind of what this story is about, right the
your body, your body lets you down? You're in the
playoffs game one against the seventies six or is you
have twelve points? And the beginning of it was was
the torn a c l in looking back and and
and look if I've having seen you playing, how explosive
you are, Like your hard on your body, not just
(01:00:46):
jumping into dudes, but like, yeah, I feel like you
walk on the outside of your feet, right, it's a
little bit different gait. Um, Yeah, what is it? Is
it just how your body is built? Or do you
think in your effort to build your body into the
rock that you are, maybe you could have constructed it differently.
I feel like it's just the way that my body
(01:01:07):
was built. And along along the way I did learn
more about my body. And even with that, I feel like, um,
it's just life, you know what I mean, Like I
don't feel like my body let me down. I felt like, um,
me having my injuries let me um actually helped me
grow as an individual and as a person. Like if
(01:01:27):
I didn't have those injuries, my whole life would be.
So he's just basketball, and don't get me wrong, UM
that's not a bad thing. But in my case, I'm
way more than that. That don't define who I am
as a person. And you see on the other individuals
that did that, like Kobe Bryant, what he's doing now.
He's living right now at the age of later. But
(01:01:49):
he's how old is Kobe? H? He's probably forty, right,
He's probably he went to forty to actually live. Yeah,
he didn't because you know it's interesting. So he lives
close to me and when he tours Achilles tending, our
daughters are in the same school. And I mean he
told me that, like you know, his year off. I mean,
(01:02:10):
because guys were and I think people were kind of
worried about you the same way, like he was so
about ball that people like man when when it stops
when he starts playing about like what's Kobe gonna do?
And that's when he got interested in movies and in
writing books and all this other stuff that obviously now
he's become a big part of his his daughter. So
during all of this hard times with your knee, not
(01:02:32):
just the A c L but also the two other
miniscule tears, what did you discover? What outside of basketball
did you discover? I mean just everything. Um. I like
watching plays, I like listening to all the old books.
I like reading books. I like chess, I like you
know what I mean, just et cetera. I like, I
like to do other things. But I wouldn't have known
(01:02:53):
that if I was still playing, because I felt if I, um,
if I didn't get injured, because before I got injured,
like I won the m v P. You win the
MVP your third year as a two year old, the
sky is the limb. You could do anything. That's how
you feel. You're invisible, invisible, And that's how I felt
at the time. And um, I felt like everything just
(01:03:16):
happened for a reason, Like I got injured. I end
up having my son right after, um, like right before
I got injured, Like he was my blessing. He was
the one that he was a gift that like that
showed me that it was way much more than just basketball.
Like I had to mature, I had to grow. I
(01:03:38):
have to evolve, and it's not for my sake, just
like for my family, Like I'm the first bread one
in my family. Don't want to that the start of everything,
and I wanted I don't want it to stop with
just my after my kids. I thought, I'm going my kids.
I just I don't wanted to stop there. I want
this to be like generational. Well, you got criticized, Uh
(01:04:00):
for one time you talked about, hey man, I I
want to be able to, you know, walk and and
I want to be able to function, you know, with
with my son as as as he gets older. Obviously,
obviously I would guess it might not have come out
the way you wanted to come out. Um, but but
how do you feel now about your body and about
(01:04:22):
how you kind of got viewed based upon saying like,
hey man, this is what I want for my future
and I'm trying to protect that body. Um. Sorry, but
everything I said, I'm meant to say it the way
that I said it, like the way that I talked like,
you can understand what I'm saying, that you could community,
(01:04:43):
we could communicate back and forth. I just grew up
different than how you grew up. My determinology is a
little bit different. That's the only thing. But what I
was saying at the time is what all these guys
are saying now is that they need low management. You
know what, after I tell my a c O, you know,
I probably you need a year to really give mark
and get back healthy, to see if I could go
(01:05:03):
actually out there, to go out there and play instead
of just being out there, I mean being ready for
six months or seeing if I'm ready in six months.
I know I need a full year. And at the time,
that's all at that time, that's all I was saying.
Right now, it's it's interesting because when you came back
and you were practicing, people are wondering, well, why isn't
he playing, And at the time, I was trying to
(01:05:24):
point out, like, hey, it's one thing to hop into
an NBA game for five minutes. A whole is then
to get in the playoffs, which has played at such
a ridiculously high level. And it did feel like on
some level, the bulls didn't protect you from from that
right that they weren't. They weren't going like, heyyyy, listen,
we're that we want to have Derrick Rose in a
Bulls uniform for twenty years. We can't worry about this
(01:05:45):
playoff series? Is that? Is that fair to point out that,
at least nationally, they didn't protect you. Instead, you were
you know, you were the people would say like, why
isn't Derrick Rose playing um when you had been practicing
at times leading up to the playoffs. You know, it's
not up to me to say that, but UM, I
felt like any any partnership or if I'm involved with anyone,
(01:06:09):
I'm fighting for you like you can you can have
a partnership my girl, my family or whatever, like I'm
gonna show the same love that you showed me. And um,
during that time, I was like, it wasn't like I
didn't have to fight. I felt like, Um I was.
I felt like I was just handling everything myself. Yeah,
(01:06:32):
Derrick Rows joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox.
Sport trade of the new book is called I'll Show You, Um,
did you in the book? Because I just got the book?
Did you in the book say? Why you walked up,
why you took personal time away with the Knicks, because
that that felt like that was a big that and
the Cleveland one there was those were big moments where
people around the league were like, hey, what did you did?
(01:06:53):
You tackle that those topics a little. But at the
same time, I think that, like I've been doing everything
and goes it's a time and place for the Like
the book, you can cram everything in the book, but
I think I would want to do that visually, you
know what I mean, because, um, it was a lot
that went to them decisions. Um for me to even
(01:07:13):
step away or the day, Like, I would want to
do that visually so that people can have a better
understanding and um with like my decisions and what what
happened at the time you had fifty last year with
the Timberwolves. It's one of the most emotional and amazing
comeback moments I can think of in the history of sport,
and especially when you factor in kind of what Andrew
(01:07:35):
Luck saying now, right, which is man rehab is so
hard emotionally and mentally on you. Um, yeah, go ahead, no, No,
I was there. I totally get what he was coming from.
I totally get it. What was that night like with
when Um, it was just an amazing night, Like I
(01:08:03):
felt like it was gonna happen that night. Um, Jimmy
wasn't playing. I knew that we only had like eight
guys on the roster that was ready, that was even
like suited up, And I knew that a lot of
the I was gonna have to like take on the
bulk up the load that night. And thank god I
was ready. But I just wanted to win the game.
(01:08:26):
Like you can score fifty or sixty like and lose.
Like I just wanted to win the game last thing.
And I know you gotta go. How much more do
you have left? You've given so much to this sport
right obviously your body and then we talked a little
about your your kind of soul and your energy in
in this comeback in rehab. How much more do you
have in it? I feel like I still got a
(01:08:49):
lot of love. Um, I'm training my ass off right now,
Um in l A maybe on everything I can to
make sure that my body is healthy. Um, Like you
never know, I still have goals. I still want to
win the championship. Um, you never know what can happen
with in the East and like the futures break on
(01:09:10):
me right now. And just like the title of the book,
I'll show you Derrick Rose, m v P Rookie of
the Year, unbelievable comeback story. The book is called I'll
Show You Go out There by Sam Smith. Derek great
stuff man, Thanks so much for spending some time. Pleasures
mind Derek Rose known him for a long time. That
fifty point game last night last year was was you
(01:09:32):
know that? The sports sports It's the real reality show,

So we've had Mike Mayock fuse comment, Antonio Brown supposedly
going to be suspended, and John Grew saying the team
is gonna put out an announcement sometime today. So we
will as soon as we find out that announcement, will
(01:10:14):
we'll discuss it. My guess is based upon what John
Gruden said, We'll play for you top of the hour.
Based on what John Gruden said, Antonio Brown will be suspended,
but they will not cut him. Will not cut him.
I'm parsing words. That's what we do here until we
get an announcement. But that's what I'm guessing every day.
At this time, we like to play for you a
(01:10:35):
portion of a previous show on Fox Sports Traded or
Fox Sports when we call it. This is my guy,
Colin Cowherd earlier today explaining why the Titans have a
quarterback problem. This is not great. It is of my
opinion that the most verbal position in American sports, and
there is no second place, is quarterback. You have to
(01:10:59):
be verbal. You don't have to be big. You don't
have to be athletic, you don't have to have a
huge arm, you don't have to be relatable. You've got
to talk. Baker Mayfield's too cocky for my taste, but
he's verbal. Aaron Rodgers too arrogant for my taste, but
he's verbal. Marcus Mariota is a non verbal person, and
(01:11:21):
it's been a huge issue in Tennessee. Jay Cutler, big arm, smart,
very moody, struggle to communicate with coaches. It was his downfall.
He's probably the most talented quarterback that didn't win in
a decade. Jay Cutler had a big brain and a
huge arm, was not a great communicator. It's an interesting perspective.
(01:11:44):
I also think that Marcus Mariota has been hurt a
lot and he's just not that good. Right. Like, um,
you look at at Kansas City, right Pat Mahomes is
an unbelievable town and seems like a super likable dude.
But his voice is that of Kermit the Frog. Kermit
the Frog h And it's not that he doesn't talk
(01:12:09):
at all, but he's not a huge talker. Mariot has
been fine, like he's been in rudimentary offenses. His second
year was his best statistically last year. Seven touchdowns, eleven touchdowns,
eight interceptions, I mean about his average numbers you can
and he only played and started in thirteen games because
he's always hurt. He just happens hasn't shown himself to
(01:12:32):
be a dynamic thrower. I think when you couple that
with the fact that he's quiet, that he's nonverbal, you
put those things together and now becomes an issue. But
the idea that he's not succeeding in Tennessee. Because he's nonverbal. No,
I think that's something that could be a lot better.
But you could work around it if he had a
(01:12:53):
great arm, if he was playing in a better offense,
if he was healthier than he actually is. By the way,
that was also the problem with Colin Kaepernick. People do
forget that Kaepernick was a guy that had his headphones on,
that was very kept to himself, not an alpha personality.
(01:13:13):
Like we've made this Kaepernick indictment solely based upon the
fact that he kneeled before the flag and they didn't
win games. They were gonna win games regardless when he
was in San Francisco lost, but there was a confidence
level of arrogance. And yet he didn't throw from different
uh platforms because he had small hands. He was a
non verbal guy. He just wasn't seen as a leader.
(01:13:36):
And oh yeah, by the way, even in the movement
that he started with kneeling before the flag, he hasn't
truly been a vocal leader of that, even though he
started what anybody would determine as a movement. Anyone would
say when you see somebody neel before the flag, even
if they have some other issue for doing it, they're
doing a Kaepernick. He led the movement, but then he
(01:13:57):
never had anything to say about it, nothing at all.
M hm. So we get ready for this upcoming season.
The Saints and the Chiefs, excuse me, the Patriots and
the Chiefs are the are the favorites. I don't believe
that the Chiefs, um you know, I look at at
the a f C. I'm very cautious of what happens
(01:14:19):
with the Chargers because stop me if you've heard this before,
but they got injury issues. Derwin James should be ready
at the end of the year, you know, should be
back by the end of the year. You have Derwin
James if everybody else is healthy, Chargers have a stacked defense, stacked.
Then you go to the offensive side of the ball
and Russell Kung you think will be back, but they
(01:14:41):
have no idea none. He could be back at the
end of the year. You combined Russell Kung, Derwin James,
and they will have Melvin Gordon at some point in
time this year. And now a sudden, that roster is
more talented than anybody else in the a f C.
That's one of the reasons they played so well. But
I get the hand city thing because people thought they
(01:15:02):
were the better team. New Orleans is favorite in the NFC.
I'm not sure I see that one. The Bears the
team that I see the least. Remember last year the Bears.
You have the energy of adding Khalil mac combined, which
is like a It's like a bump when you add
a vice president and the presidential campaign. You know, they
got or a little debate bump. They got a bump
(01:15:24):
combined with the fact the division was as bad as
it's going to be Minnesota and Kirk Cousins didn't win
a big game, and they had a bunch of injuries.
De Troy was in the first year the coaching staff
was the last year the Green Bay coaching staff. They
played the last place schedule and they took people by storm.
If there's a bet I like the least, it's the
(01:15:46):
Bears at nine to one to win the NFC, whereas
you got Eagles and Rams. I don't see Packers on here,
and I think by the end of the night people
be talking about the Packers. All right, I got a
lot to get to. Third hour of the show. Joe
Banner is gonna join us. He's the former general manager
of the Eagles and the Cleveland Browns. Get his sense
on both of those teams. Plus I want to ask
(01:16:08):
him about Antonio Brown. Also wait to hear what the
Ravens are saying about their new offense with Lamar Jackson,
another non verbal guys. Lamar Jackson he more verbal than
he used to be, but not a loquacious talker, not
in anyway, in any way. All right? Coming up next,
the Antonio Brown saga takes yet another turn, from blisters
(01:16:31):
two bonnets, to Instagram to potentially coming to blows, going
to blows with your general manager. The decision that John
Gruden has not an easy one. That's next. Be sure

(01:17:17):
Welcome to the Dug Gotlip Show. Joe Banner joined us
in fifteen minutes. We have NFL football on television in
a couple of hours. NFL football on TV in a
couple of hours. Man, I'm excited about aren't you all right? Music?
Fantasy team? Do you have one? I have two? Uh?
(01:17:42):
Is anybody in tonight's game on your fantasy team? I
have Davantae Adams Yummy, yummy? Okay? Uh weeak defensive backgroup
and obviously Aaron Rodgers find Davante Adams affects you. Dan
buyer fantasy team or two or five? Um, Dan dance
Lil dance and dance a little, a little busy, Ryan,
(01:18:04):
what about you? You get? You get fantasy team Rogers.
And in my other league, I have Antonio Brown. So
I'm very upset Antonio Brown right now. Yeah. I tweeted
that out earlier today, like there are somebody that kind
of out doubt themselves that in the first round passed
on a Zeke Elliott, but then like the third or
fourth round, like I'm gonna take Antonio Brown because I
know he'll be there. You're like, wait, what was that? You? Yes,
(01:18:26):
I have Antonio Brown and Hopkins. I was like, Oh,
this is gonna be great. I still one two punch. No,
I'm not so much, not so much. I have Aaron
Rodgers as well on one of my fantasy teams, and
I have a Zeke Elliott, So I'm looking a little
bit better than than some people. But we'll see how
much he plays this weekend. If you missed it, the
Antonio Brown thing took yet another weird turn, right, Like
(01:18:48):
this thing is weird, there are there are normal things
for people to get upset about, right, normal things like
in your life, in your regular in your day. What
can set you off? Traffic, fine, financial issues, relationship issues. Um,
(01:19:13):
if you're angry, everything somehow right, you're like super super
hungry and then everything ticks you off. These are these
are normal things. Um. I understand the weather can make
you upset. I will point out that for the most part,
you know what the weather is going to be before
(01:19:34):
the day begins. It may be a little worse than
they may screw up the forecast some, but you do
like if you walk outside, you're like, I can't believe
how hot it is? Did you not know? But Antonio
Brown burning his feet in the cryo chamber is just odd, right,
(01:19:58):
It's just super m super odd, isn't it. And then
of the things to sue the NFL about a helmet
which has been redesigned for safety. And then at one
point part of uh, part of the legal reason he
(01:20:20):
said he wanted to wear it was for safety, which
made no sense. This is a guy who's yelling outside.
I can't believe how windy it is right now. Now,
dare like just odd things who put this left hand
turned signal here? Why what is that? What exactly is
(01:20:44):
that about? And now it's about finds that he received,
or maybe about the fact that the fines have been
levied and he's been held to those fines. Case in point,
and this is an interesting one. Yesterday he took to
Instagram posted the note that he got from Mike Mayock
(01:21:08):
and the and the Raiders have to send this legal
notice identifying the fines and the reason behind those fines.
He lost nearly fourteen thousand dollars fourteen thousand dollars because
he had no showed for a walkthrough in Winnipeg. Now, look,
if you're not on the plane, remember the Raiders didn't
(01:21:29):
bring starters. If you're not on the plane, all right,
you can't find me. He was in Winnipeg. What the
hell else were you doing? All literally all you had
to do is show up for the walkthrough, gets it,
doesn't lose any money, and then today to score yesterday
to square off with Mike Mayock and threatened to come
(01:21:51):
to blows with a new general manager after the Pittsburgh
Steelers could not have given you way faster, even though
you cost him a ton against cap Just bizarre, bizarre behavior,
super super odd, and it puts it puts John Gruten's
(01:22:11):
inevitable in enviable position where he has to decide do
I side with Mayok or do I side with the
crazy player? Here's Mayok earlier today. Antonio Brown is not
in the building today. It won't be practicing. I don't
(01:22:31):
have any more information for you right now. And when
I have something, it becomes appropriate. You guys will all
get it, I promise you. But that's it for today.
Mm hmmm, well we get it. I'll let you know.
But basically it's he's not here and not there in
on a Wednesday is big. Not there on a Monday
(01:22:53):
not that big a deal. Not there on a Tuesday
slightly bigger deal. But Tuesdays, by the way, usually their
meteor off day Wednesday, That's that's when the game plan
is implemented. That's a big deal. We also have the
stories that he wasn't paying attention in meetings, that he
was in his phone, he had to you know, and look,
a lot of this comes down to I think Antonio
(01:23:15):
Brown has an issue with authority. I mean from Pittsburgh
and having the faith having doing a Facebook live from
the locker room to any time he was told what
he needed to do and how he needed to do
from Ben Roethlisberger. He doesn't want anybody tell him what
to do. I don't want the cry o people telling
him he's got to wear a specific kind of shoes
when he goes in the cryo chamber, Like yo, man,
(01:23:36):
I'm Antonio Brown. Few to be fine. No, they're not fine.
Doesn't want the NFL tell him what kind of hat
he can wear. And now he doesn't want Mike Mayock
finding him telling him when and how he has to
show up and how he has to act this. This
is a defiant dude, a guy who's got major issues
with authority. But if he gets suspended for week one,
(01:23:58):
his contract is not aranteed, and the Raiders are at
the This is where the rubber meets the road. My
guess is they take a middle ground. And I guess
that because I listened to Jon Gruden earlier today. Obviously
you've been at training camp. I think for the last
four weeks we have been practicing without him and preparing
to play. Uh. No matter who's injured, you have to adapt. Unfortunately,
(01:24:22):
we had to adapt again today. But we're really excited
about our receiving corps. I'm emotional about it. I hope
you hope you understand why. I think a lot of
this guy. I think Antonio is a great receiver, and
I think, deep down, I think he's a really good guy.
So I'm I'm frustrated. I'm not gonna say anymore about it.
Hope it all works out, huh, hope, hope it all
works out. Deep down, he's a good guy. That's his
(01:24:46):
way of saying, we're gonna suspend him, sit him down.
But I still think it's like the It's like Luke
Skywalker talking about Darth Vader. There's still some good in him,
and maybe they cut him, but I don't. That didn't
feel like a we're done with this, time to move
on sort of press conference. Did anybody else get that feel?
(01:25:08):
I think he's really ticked. I think he's resigned to
the fact he has to suspend him. But I did
not get the sense that that was a guy saying,
you know the thing that dear dealer does when they
show you both sides of their hand. We're done with
this guy. Don't see that happening. Feels close, feels like
one more thing. And that's what I would do, and
(01:25:29):
I think most teams would do that. But this is
Jon Gruden's baby, and it's also it's it's also Jon
Gruden's decision. He's got the ten year contract. He hired Mayock.
He's the one who's gonna have to live or die
with Antonio Brown or cutting Antonio Brown before he plays
a game. You really want to change the culture of
(01:25:50):
the place, you would cut Antonio Brown. If not, you
probably have to suspend him at least a game if
not too And that's what it feels like we'll happen.
And that's why Antonio Brown was available. This is why
the uh why the Steelers were willing to put eighteen
million dollars in dead cap money on their cap just
to move him off of their books. This is why
(01:26:13):
they feel like it's additioned by subtraction. All of this
makes complete and total sense, even if Antonio Brown's individual
arguments and issues with people make no sense at all.
The champions of the preseason have nothing to do with
the records. The champions of the preseason are healthy and
(01:26:35):
and when in terms of popular opinion, and that, my friends,
is the Pittsburgh Steelers healthy. They look sharp, and they
got rid of this a whole who they were able
to cover up for for year after year after year,
and they eventually got tired of it, and they somehow
got the Raiders to trade for him. And oh yeah,
(01:26:57):
by the way, while the Raiders traded for him, they
actually gave him more money which they didn't have to
Raider's gonna Raider, the Steelers gonna Steeler? Man? Is this
an ugly chapter? And they're all just more and more
bizarre chapters, right, that's the weird part. The weird part
isn't that you have egomaniacal wide receiver represented by Drew
(01:27:21):
Rosenhaus making a stink. The weird part is every part
of the like they're not even arguments that any sane
person would make helmet cryo chamber, freezing your feet, posting,
posting that you got fined for things you didn't show
up for, and acting like the team did you wrong.
Don't get it, don't get at all. Joe Banner joins me.
(01:27:45):
Up coming next, I'll get his thoughts on what he
would do if he were John Gruden. Be sure to
catch live editions of The Doug dot Leap Show week
days at noon Eastern three pm Pacific Doug Gotlip Show
here on Fox Sports Radio. He's run the Eagles, He's
run the Browns. You've seen him on TV. You can
fall him on Twitter at Joe Banner thirteens. Joe Bannery
(01:28:08):
joins us in the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Joe, you tweeted out the Raiders, prioritized character
in the draft, and signed a series of problem guys
in free agency. Having worked with Gruden, my bet is
that he reflects a difference in philosophy between UH general
manager and and head coach. What does that mean they
do today? Considering we believe they can actually get out
(01:28:31):
of the Santonio Brown deal if they suspend him. The
answer is they have a big argument. I mean, I
think that I no Mike for years he was in Philadelphia,
and how it has to get to know him and
talk to him, and you know, certainly watch my TV's
gotta philosophy frankly close to what we did in Philadelphia
and what I think most of what he teams do
(01:28:52):
where they put a really high emphasis on character, and
that isn't just good guys bad guys. It's about you know,
how driven are you, how kind of work ethic you have,
all those kinds of things. So you know, I saw
them signing guys like e Coogneto and and and Brown,
who are you know, talented players, but obviously you know,
bring a little extra than just what they bring to
the field. I was a little surprised and assumed that
(01:29:14):
was John's philosophy. So I I my bet is that
they're having a bit of a disagreement as to just
how aggressively they need to respond. I don't think there's
any doubt they probably both agree they need to take
some actions in a message. I think it's a lot
less clear exactly what they'll do, and my suspicion would
be that John will be wanting to do something at
less aggressively than Mike. Yeah, that's what sounded like obviously,
(01:29:36):
And but but how John handles it does reflect how
much he has Mike's back. Correct. Well, there's no doubt
about that. I mean, listen, you you do not want
the players to feel like they can play one guy
off against the other, or they get away with one
more guy more things of one guy. The other may
hate to be trape. But it's like a parent. I
(01:29:57):
maybe you have kids and they realize that they're more
likely to get yes from one than the other. You've
kind of got a problem on your hands. You don't
want the players to think that, and they've got to
find a way to cover up the outward appearance. And
probably the reasonable guests from those of us that know
both of them, that they have a little bit of
a different attitude about this, and you've got to get that.
So the team is not feeling that way, and then
(01:30:19):
they're kind of playing, you know, pushing the envelope as
far as they can is probably the best way to
say it. Um, Okay, so explain to me. I believe
I knew this. I knew this beforehand. But the idea
of a veteran player. If they're on the roster for
the week one of the season, their contract becomes fully guaranteed.
What if they're only suspended for a game? What happens then,
(01:30:42):
so their contract is not guaranteed. Um, they have to
be you know, on the roster and and you know
on the team, so to speak. When you're suspended, you're
not consider on the team. So if they chose to
exercise what I think is clearly they're right as long
as they've documented this properly, and given what they call
them the league incremental warnings, I think they were in
(01:31:03):
a position where they could claim that the guarantees are
no longer their salaries intact, and if he comes in
and does a good job and doesn't create a more problems,
he's going to get paid for his work. But that
they in essence have the leverage now of any more
screw ups can result in than just cutting him without
any consequence, and he's not going to get out of
that by if he's not on the roster, you know
(01:31:25):
for this game this week, Joe Banner joining us in
the Doug Gottlieb Show. Eagles, Brown's Falcons all front offices
that he's been a huge part of from general manager
to a consultant. He joins us in the Dug Gotlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Let's let's get to
the news of yesterday, which was uh DA's new contract.
We're hearing what excuse me, Zeke's new contract. It'll affect
(01:31:48):
dax new contract. What do you think of the limited
details that have come out? What do you think of
how Dallas handled it? So, I mean, what we know now,
and so we we should really be looking at these
deals and what really are the years that are going
to happen. Um, they so they stuck two years on
the end of the deal there to try to infleep
the numbers a bit. So I really look at the
(01:32:09):
thing that's a six year deal, and I'd rate it
that way. If you do that, the average is fourteen
and a half, which is the same as girl. We
basically the full guaranteed amounted signing. In other words, something
happened tomorrow with the season started in two weeks and
he had a life a career ending injury. He only
has twenty eight million dollars guaranteed. I say only because
that's actually a good number for running backs. But obviously
it's a lot less than kind of the initial reports.
(01:32:31):
Now he has money that becomes guaranteed as he goes
forward if he stays healthy and stays out of trouble.
But at this moment, he only has twenty eight million
dollars in guaranteed money. So listen, it's a top running
back deal. I don't really think it's fair to say
he beat the top back. I think he matched the
top back. It's actually a little less per year than
Bell got in terms of guarantee per year, and it
(01:32:52):
matches what Girly got in terms of the average. So
it's a premiere running back deal and he got it
two years early. Now, you know, other than running back,
I mean very strong advoct of the player is waiting.
The closer they get the free agency, the more levels
they have in the better deal they're gonna get, whether
it's from their existing team of the new team. And
this isn't a theory. We watched this happened year after year.
Teams resigned their guys and the free agency starts, and
(01:33:14):
those guys actually leap frog the guys that resigned with
their own teams. So in this case, in this position,
I actually think he did a good job. He got
them to sign him early, UH, and he got a good,
strong deal. If he signed that deal a year or
two for now he had free agency, would actually be
a lot bigger. But the position is just so, you know,
vulnerable and exposed. I think he did a good job
in getting what he got, all right. Then he got
(01:33:34):
Melvin Gordon, who reportedly was offered ten a year UH,
turned it down, and he wants, you know, top level
running back money the Chargers gave him to last Saturday. Hey,
show up or we're not even talking contract. Charges don't
a b R B bluffing. Neither is Melvin Gordon. What
do you think of that situation? So this is where
you really gotta you know. And I really say this
(01:33:57):
from an agent perspective. Um, although it's always hard to
tell when is the agent driving the process and when
of the player driving in the process. I actually think
in this case, because Gordon was so vocal about what's
going with Bell last year, it maybe him driving this process.
But you've got to know the team you're dealing with.
I mean, the Charges are a team that has some
very very clear philosophies. They have policies that they don't
(01:34:21):
deviate from UH. And you know if you try to
swim up stream one that when they have the leverage,
you're gonna end up in the situation he's in. I'm
I'm afraid that he's gonna be losing money every week
with no way to retrieve it, and the charges aren't
going to change their position. I mean, that's their history.
That's who they are. I understand that. I mean some
of the teams are that way. That's really the way
we run the Eagles. I actually think the better teams
(01:34:42):
like the Steelers, the Patriots, the Eagles, Packers, you know,
this is how they do business. I mean, just they
get people used to this is our policies. We don't
dedate from. That doesn't better from the player. They're not unfair,
but they may not be player friendly. UM. And they're
just saying, listen, if you want to do a deal
or really at a position that we have some depth
(01:35:02):
and we think there's some abundance of talent around the league. Um,
you can wait in a free agency and maximize your revenue.
It could take a deal early and you're probably not
going to get the most you can. So I think
he's just sitting here in each week he sits out,
he's gonna lose money and he's never gonna get it back.
I agree, I agree. You know, he would have been
better off to take that deal. Uh as of now,
you know, he'll get his contracts and then potentially franchise
(01:35:25):
franchise tag numbers which would be you know, somewhere in
the twenty million over the next two years, and then
run the risk of being a free agent or being
franchise tagged again. But uh, it's it's really interesting the
difference in one where he sits in the landscape of
running backs into the franchise that he's dealing with Joe
Banner joining us on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Uh, Jared
Goff million dollars? Could couldn't the raider couldn't the Rams
(01:35:50):
have driven a harder bargain. Well, this is uh no,
I don't think so it's my answer. And um, this
is where the timing question comes back. And I mean,
he did a deal two years early, and he's received
financial security for multiple generations of goths. And the truth
is whether we agree or disagree on the evaluation of
(01:36:11):
his quality of play. He's three years in the league
and he's taken a team to the super Bowl. I mean,
just by definition, he's going to get a ton of money.
And I actually think if the Rams don't wait any longer,
it would have cost them more and they had to
make a decision. Is this the guy who want to
ride for the next you know, five, ten, twelve years.
If it is, this is the price of doing business.
If it isn't, then you know, let's let him play
(01:36:33):
through the contract and make sure we get a solution.
And I just think watching the way John McVeigh acts,
the way he was able to work with him, the
fact that he was good enough to get him to
a super Boy, I just can't even imagine he wasn't
strong proponent for you know, where this is our guy.
We're going to ride this guy, and the longer we wait,
the more it's going to cost. That's just the nature
of these things. You know. You don't see positions line
(01:36:53):
up where the best guy is always making them money.
It's the top tier of guys who did the most
recent deal, that's who gets paid the most. So, uh,
you know, I actually think they got a deal that
is the best they could have hoped for under the circumstance,
which doesn't necessarily mean, you know, he's a thirty three
million dollar quarterback or he's stacked up perfectly in line
with the other guys in terms of who's the best
(01:37:15):
who's the worst. It means that's the cost of resigning
a guy two years early who took your team to
a super Bowl, and I think they just decided if
he could do that, he's good enough, we want to
ride him. This is the cost of doing business. Kil Banner,
our guest here on the Doug Gotlip Show on fox
Board Tradio. Um, when when you saw Matt Lafleur being
hired by the Packers, and you've been through this several
(01:37:37):
times over, what well, what did you think of that fit?
You know? So listen, here's my view. I only know
Matt through a word of mouth and then watching his
offense last year in Tennessee, and I've always heard nothing
but good things about him. But truthfully, I'm pretty much
of the mindset that you know where the game is
headed in the terms of passing being what you know
(01:38:00):
drives the game, It drives the successful offenses. And we've
actually reached the point where offense maybe even more important
than defense and winning championships. And I was just struck
by how conservative he was in Tennessee. Now that may
have been because that's variable philosophy and he was just
carrying out the instructure as the head coach, or maybe
that he's got a more conservative philosophy. I think you'd
(01:38:21):
think coming from you know who he's worked under. So
I'm curious to see it. I was a little bit.
If he runs the offense he ran a Tennessee in
Green Bay, I think he's going to be wasting Aaron
Rodgers talents. Is too much running, especially on early downs
that leaves you in second and third and long and
the most effective down to pass on his first down,
and that's when Aaron is going to be the most successful.
(01:38:42):
So I worry that it would lead to falling behind
the games. Rogers obviously good enough that he's more likely
to come from behind the most quarterbacks. But if he's
what his resume says, it's probably a great fit. If
it's the offense he called in Tennessee last year, it's
not probably such a good fit. Noah. The problem is
you don't know if that's because thought Marcus Mariotta was limited,
or you know there the talent around him was limited
(01:39:04):
or a little bit of a little little little little
bit of of both. Joe, you obviously go ahead. We'll
know in the next couple of weeks because we're going
to see very quickly in which offense. You know he's
running now that he has Aaron? Are you a Buyron Trabiski?
You know, I I like Mitch. I don't love Mitch. Um.
I do think that with a great defense that they have,
(01:39:25):
they can go along way with Mitch. I think Mitch
is a guy that can, you know, help your team
and and be supported by the people around him. I
don't think he's one of these quarterbacks that carries your team.
So I think he's in the right situation. You know,
Matt and Agy worked in Philly when I was there,
really real likable, smart guy. Uh so a guy you
want to root for. Uh And I think he does
(01:39:47):
things that really helped the quarterback. I think they've surrounded him,
uh talent wise really well, and obviously the defense is good,
so I think the team has a chance to be
very successful. I don't think Mitch on his own can
carry a team. I think he's a good, solid quarterback,
but not one of the real difference makers. I tend
to agree with you. Obviously, you worked hand in hand
(01:40:07):
with Andy Reid, and I have a little bit of
different perspective than other people. And you tell me if
I'm way way off. See Andy Reid gets this rap
of a guy who with the one year as the exception,
couldn't get to a Super Bowl. But I actually think
it's a it's a little bit like like, look at
how how Saban's offense is different. Now they have a
(01:40:28):
legit quarterback, right, you gotta you put a big time
quarterback in Saban's offense and all of a sudden, Yeah,
I'll become more offensive minded, like I feel like he did.
I know McNabb was a really good player. I don't
think he was ever considered a top, you know, super
elite quarterback. Now you put an elite quarterback with Andy Reid,
(01:40:49):
and and it's a it's a different Andy Reid's able
to do all the things he ever dreamed of doing,
whereas he had to mask the deficiencies of McNabb and
maybe of Alex Smith previously. Is that fair? I couldn't
agree where I am a huge Andy Reid fan. We
worked together for fourteen years. He's a great person and
he's a great coach. Hard for me to explain and
(01:41:10):
frustrating having been part of the Philadelphia picture that he
hasn't won a Super Bowl. But he's an exceptional coach.
He picks coaches really well, which is crucial. Uh. He
has great offensive mind and you've seen that exhibited. Uh.
He knows how to manage and motivate players. He knows
how to convince the team to put their individual interests
behind the team's interests. I mean everything that you look for,
(01:41:32):
and if I asked you the list a bunch of
qualities as some of the coaches that are the best
you've ever known, they're the same as Andy. I mean
they're great leaders or attention to detail, They understand the game.
And he could coach any position. You could make him
even on defense, you could make him a position coach.
He understands every aspect and every detail of of not
just the scheme, but the every element of teaching the players.
(01:41:57):
He's just an exceptional coach. I will be shocked this
February he's not holding the trophy. I really will be.
I just think they're in my mind, a clear, clear
favorite they really should have won last year. Um, but
they I will be shocked Iff in February the thre
not the team holding the trophy. Joe Benner, Joe great
stuff man. Enjoy the game tonight, the football. We love

when I was co hosting Dan Patrick show, going back
(01:42:38):
to last week, and this is Jason Whitlock. Then on
Antonio Brown. Maybe he doesn't want to play football man,
And that's a hard thing for someone that's been as
competitive and as successful as him to admit. And so
he shows it to you in other ways. You guys
are both married. These guys are both old enough to
(01:43:01):
have had friends that a spouse wants out of a marriage.
They don't come directly to the spouse and say I
want a divorce. They started showing it to your in behavior,
I want out. That's what you're looking at. What a
b he's made enough money. A few years ago, Voltez
Burfett put him into protocol program and he wants no
(01:43:24):
more of that. See. I don't believe that that's actually
the case. I don't think he doesn't want to play football. Um.
I think there are guys that think they don't need
the money or that they don't need you know, they're
I'm more than a football player, EI, there's more to
me than that, and they're like, all right, fine, but
you get played to play football. I believe he's got
a major issue with authority. Major issue he Here's Mike Mayock,
(01:43:48):
who of course got into the kerfuffle within on the
Raiders Insider podcast. The goal to win every football game,
and obviously you look at what the way Lins done
and I played for coach Belichick and I've always had
the utmost amount of respect, and I think when you
do it the way they have over his eighteen years,
it's almost mind boggling. And that's kind of the model
(01:44:12):
out there, and nobody else has been able to do
it for that level of time. So I have a
lot of respect for them. If they really want to
be the Patriots. There is only one answer to what
should happen for Antonio Brown, he should be cut. But
this is the problem. Everybody says they want to do
it the Patrio way. You gotta do it the Patrioay,
just just a quick question and buyer, you would probably
(01:44:35):
have a better memory of this. Do you remember how
it ended with Randy Moss with the Patriots? Oh gosh? Um? Yeah,
not off hand, because I thought, yeah, didn't he move
on and not? Well, I'll just put it that way.
(01:44:55):
Was it not? Well? It did not end well. He
end up getting traded. I'm gonna say to ten see
for like a fifth round pick. Um. So uh, you know,
Randy Moss had you know, the best season of his
career in two thousand seven when he came over from Oakland.
And this is what Moss said to ESPN after he
(01:45:17):
got he got traded. I got a phone calls Bill Belichick.
I thought it was it was a friend, somebody playing
my phone. I actually cussed him out, kept saying as
Bill Belichick blah blah blah blah blah. This is when
he went to the Raiders. Excuse me when when he
he ultimately he wanted more money, he wanted to do contract.
Um in, he want a new contract and they got
(01:45:38):
rid of him. They got rid of him. So the
idea that you want to be like the Patriots. Remember
the Patriots had made some hard decisions in the past,
hard decisions. They did not play Malcolm Butler in the
Super Bowl. Why didn't the play Malcolm Butler and Super Bowl? Well,
(01:46:00):
he wasn't playing well. He didn't show up for practice.
He said he had an illness, so he missed the
team playing, but didn't go to the team doctors went
instead to the hospital. So like, we we're not playing
you in the Super Bowl. Remember the Eagles didn't punt.
I didn't punt. Now the Raiders still could have assumed
(01:46:22):
Patriot still could have won the game. But the fact
was that Bill Belichick was more focused on doing things
the way they did things than he was worrying about
winning a game because of one player. You could win
a game but lose the locker room or lose the war.
We'll see exactly where the exactly where the Raiders are
(01:46:43):
where everyone says they want to do the right thing
until the right thing is the hard thing, and then
it gets really difficult. I think gets really really difficult.
But Randy Moss was a great player. He reached the
absolute pinnacle of his career with the New England Patriots
after a great start with the Minnesota Vikings. But never
(01:47:06):
forget that. Uh he he didn't feel like he was wanted.
He wanted more money, He didn't have a contract extension.
He told reporters after the first week of the season
it would be his last season in New England. So
he had a one handed catch in week two, played great,
(01:47:27):
and they cut his ass or they trade him to
the Vikings for a third round pick, and then he
got waved in up with the Tennessee Titans coming up next,
another DIVA wide receiver having issues in the NFL. We'll
discuss next. Be sure to catch live editions of the
Doug Got Leaps Show week days at noon eastern three
(01:47:47):
pm Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart
Radio app every day, this time, The Dog Got Lip
Show on Fox Sports tradio'll get you uped in on
the biggest stories to the day. We call it the press,
the press. Damn buye what he got. I've got this
Raider's head coach John Gruden on how the team will
(01:48:08):
move forward right now with the Antonio Brown not practicing
today obviously, you've been at training camp. I think for
the last four weeks we have been practicing without him
and preparing to play. Uh, no matter who's injured, you
have to adapt. Unfortunately we had to adapt again today,
but we're really excited about our receiving corps again. They
do not participate not injury related conduct listing for Antonio
(01:48:31):
Bruna today's practice reports. The whole thing is just odd
in that they weren't able to get out in front
of it right like the report broke, So then may
Ik had to answer, like, I do think that after
it went down, there should have been a meeting last
night and there should have been announcement today, don't you think, yes,
(01:48:52):
like it wasn't like this didn't happen today. You know
this is twenty four hours ago. Just a weirdly run organization.
Now Gruden has left with this, they have to do something.
The question is how much will they do? And I mean, look,
statement will be heard if they cut him. They cut him,
there will be no doubt like hey, there you can
come in with some bad character traits, but you cannot
(01:49:15):
act on those bad character traits. I did find it funny,
it's not everybody so I don't want to say everyone,
but I didn't see a tweet or two on Twitter
today saying yet in Cleveland, you don't hear a peepe
from Odell Beckham Jr. And I would disagree with that
because we heard from Odell Beckham Junior today talking about
his hip injury. I mean, this is something I've never
I've never had to do with. It's like an extremely
(01:49:36):
fast car with like a little alignment or some of
you know, and it's like writing a center of of
what you need. Now the car can still go, but
it's dangerous, you know what I mean. So it's just
something that I've just been trying to figure out in
and out of rehab every single day. Never really dealt
with anything like that. Oh, b J a little ding
up heading into the season opener, and remember he didn't
(01:49:56):
participate no t A s. He's missed some practice time
as well. Uh No, he's not to the point of
crazy of and Antonio Brown, but he's not also not
in his eighth season, right and oh stop me via
FORMI O G O. B J is hurt. That seems
to be a running part of you know, missed part
of his rookie year, most of his second year and
(01:50:17):
then the end of last year, whether he was hurt,
they just were done done with him with the with
the thigh, with the thigh injury. Now Falcons water receiver
Julio Jones still wanting a contract extension from the Team's
got a couple of years left on his contract. But
with speaking your reporters today, after missing some time because
of soreness, Jones at first said that was it that
he didn't know that if you would play on Sunday,
(01:50:39):
but didn't come right out and say that he would
be playing on Sunday. Then clarified those comments, the point being,
Doug Julio Jones wants a new contract and he wants
one by the start of their game against the Vikings
on Sunday. I don't know that they've done so much
right by Julio Jones if they don't make him the
highest paid guy, I just say, go play football, dude,
You've made a ton of money. Ram said coach Saw
mcfaces and back Todd Gurley won't be on a pitch
(01:51:01):
count as they opened the season in Carolina on Sunday. Well,
that's good news for fantasy owners. But he's also said
that Todd Gurley is fine when Todd Gurley wasn't fine
late in the year. So it's not what you say,
it's what you do. Absolutely, Hey, Carolina, We're only gonna
play him ten snaps. Angel's outfielder Mike Trouts home run
number forty five today, tying Pete Alonso for the most
(01:51:25):
in all of baseball Angels right now, doubling up the
A six to three in the bottom of the seventh inning.
He wins the MVP this year. Yeah, probably he's Mike Trout,
but he hasn't. He doesn't win it every year, even
when his numbers are crazy. He has gotten hurt a
couple of different times. He got hurt a little bit
this year. But I mean, guys, incredible. Guy's incredible team
(01:51:46):
is not incredible, He's incredible. Pelicans guard Josh Hart went
to Twitter to voice his displeasure over finding out that
he was traded by the Lakers. On Twitter Twitter, he
said he played his butt off for the Purple and
Gold played never had an excuse. I'm truly grateful to
the Lakers organization, and I do understand the NBA is
a business, but as a player, you just want the
(01:52:09):
courtesy of a phone call saying I got traded and
not finding out on Twitter. And the problem is that
people's agents, you know they call them or you know
you do. You have no idea who leaks it out
on Twitter. I can tell you that when that trade
was made, there were two players involved in the trade
that were actually going through a workout and had just
finished and we're getting a drink. And the coaches found
out on Twitter as well. So that's just the way
(01:52:31):
it works. And finally, Team USA Cruise passed China today
or Japan, excuse me, in China in the Feeble World Cup,
Americans are facing Greece and Jannis into the Koompo coming
up on Saturday today. That be Japan wasn't very good.
Grace is just okay. Once you get to the Semis
and finals, though, they're they're gonna need to play really
good basketball because they survived Turkey. And of course there's
(01:52:53):
the Serbs out there. There's a Lithuania out there, there's
other really Australia out there are other really good teams.
Greece is the word. That's the press. You get out
there and pressed, that was the press, all right? Who
wins the night Buyer I like the Bears to win
by how many it's a three point line? Yeah, like
the Packers to cover all right, close game? What you
got their rhyme music. I'll go Packers to win or
(01:53:13):
to cover to cover, but not by the way. The
last I saw it was three and a half, three
and a half, three and a hook, So you can
get that when by a field goal, even though they
have Ryan, what about you Packers? A and Aaron Rodgers
will throw for three touchdowns. I I have the Packers
winning straight up, straight up. You know it's one of
those when when Vegas sees a team on the road
give him three points, that means they think it's a
pick um. And if it's a pick um, I take
(01:53:35):
Aaron Rodgers with Mr Biskie six days a week and
twice on Sunday, Go, pack Go. It's Doug gotlip show.
