What Up, America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio, come
into you from the Sunny City of Angels. We're getting
ready to watch the Rams take on the Seahawks and
NFC West Tilt on Fox tonight Thursday Night Football in
(01:06):
the Emerald City. UM don't love five o'clock West Coast
Star Times will say that Seattle is a little bit
different because they really really really care about their NFL team.
Part of it is their baseball team stinks and they
don't have a basketball team. They love soccer up there.
Anything that wins they like in Seattle. I don't blame him,
but there's a different level of passion for the Seahawks
(01:28):
than there would be for the Rams. But I just
I generally think these West Coast early start times not great.
But it's an incredibly important game, one which will cover
Vinne bonson yours gonna join us these Rams insider for
our local affiliate and for the athletic we'll get his
sense of how the Rams turn this thing around. You know,
(01:49):
they only have one loss, but this becomes that you
don't wanna have two game losing streak, especially if they
lose one in division. Tonight, got some J Gruden stuff
for you. Michael Rappaporto joined us and annoy me A
J Line from the Saints will join us. How did
they bottle up? Um? Ezeke Elliott and R. J. Bell
will join us. Is We'll get you all the lines
(02:09):
on the weekend and the most important lines and where
you should put your money. Tonight but yesterday I said
there was smoke. Now it's a full bone fire. I
was talking about the Minnesota Vikings. The same Vikings, of course,
have um roughly of their cap on their quarterback eight
(02:30):
four million dollars guaranteed second year of a three year deal,
so you're not getting out of it. The Vikings had
the least amount of calorie space in the entire league,
only two seven thousand dollars. That'll buy you a half
a kicker. By comparison, the Patriots are the second to last,
and they have one eight million dollars in cap space.
(02:55):
Kirk Cousins is last in the NFL in past attempts last.
That's behind Mitch Drabinski, who missed most of last game.
And um, and maybe here's the interesting part. They run
the ball on first and second down sixty of the time.
They've done everything in their power to protect him, to
(03:17):
shield him. But you don't have to worry about the
shots coming from other teams. Sometimes you have to worry
about friendly fire. Adam feeling after the game saying, hey,
we gotta be able to throw the ball. Stefon dig
is a curious no show today. He showed up, said
he had a cold yesterday, but amidst rumors that he
(03:39):
wants to be traded, he did this to quell the
rumors and stuff that you might want to be along
and that. Yeah, I mean I feel like I feel
like there's truth to all rumors. I mean, no matter
how you dressed it up, I won't be saying nothing
on it. I won't be speaking on it at all.
But there shoots all remembers that you want to be traded.
(04:04):
I'll just answered them a question, So you do want
to trade? How did I say? Well? I think and
what I mean by that? So I can you know,
collably explain. Um, there's a lot of speculation to me
be apprecirated, of course, you know at being a being
a receiver and m wanting to have success. I wanted
to win. If you want to win it you're not winning.
Of course you'll be questioned. That's mines. Did anybody else confused? Like?
(04:29):
It feels like Stefan Dick said what he wanted to say,
but then said he wouldn't speak on it. Then was asked, hey,
let's just clarify to make sure what you're getting at,
and then, in an effort to not really clarify and
to say it's about winning. He kind of clarified and said, yeah,
he's not happy. He wants out. Everybody else got that?
Did I misread that? Did I miss here? That we
(04:51):
we all heard kind of the same thing. And I
and I think, I think it really does come down
to this. John Elway was on our show last week
and I asked him about his own quarterback situation. But
a guy who's a Hall of Fame quarterback, guys want
(05:12):
two super bowls. A guy who has helped build a
franchise has been to two Super Bowls with him in
front office, right, the one they lost the Seattle and
then the one they beat in Carolina. He had this
to say about what's really important at the quarterback position.
What I believe that they I believe the rest of
the team has to believe in that quarterback, whoever that
may be, and believe in that position. Yeah. Like, it's
(05:34):
not even about how good you are, all right, it's
not even about how good you are, really, it's not.
I mean, to a circumstance, you have to have the
tangibles being able to deliver the football. You've gotta be
able to read a defense and get the get the
guys into the right spot and get the ball to
(05:55):
where it's supposed to go, like all the yet did
the footwork, and like all of these things you have
to have. I always draw back on that conversation I
had with the Phil Simms where Phil Sims always says like, well,
you know, he's a quarterback, and like, what does that mean?
I don't know. You just shake his hand and you
think we're best friends. We've known each other forever. And
(06:19):
there's something about Kirk Cousins which the awe geez, schucks, golly,
I'm sorry, did I not throw you the ball on Sunday?
Which seems on paper and to the common man so endearing,
but it seems to lack the kind of alpha machismo
(06:40):
relatability where it really matters. What really matters is the
people you work with. You can't fool them, can't fool
players are too smart. Dak might be limited, Like that's
not crazy accurate, He's not going to carry your team,
But you know what those dudes believe in act And
(07:00):
if they don't the front officer, does the coaching staff shure?
Does they know he's got physical limitations? His tangibles are
his intangibles are off the charts. I mean, Deshaun Watson.
Dudes love him like Deshaun Watson holds onto the ball
too long. He's torn his a c L twice. You
(07:22):
know he even like people are going crazy about what
he said about Cover four, Like he admitted he missed
the two big shots they needed to hit on and
he didn't play well. He didn't play well Sunday, played
well against the Chargers, survived some of his own errors.
But for for a guy who was a bad offensive line,
he keeps making mistakes and holding onto the ball, which
(07:42):
makes that offensive line look worse. But you know what,
dudes love him. They buy in right, Baker Mayfield's tiny,
not crazy athletic. One of the reasons he likes to
throw outside the numbers. He can't see down the field.
But guys of him. And it's not that they don't
(08:04):
like Kirk Cousins and like him like I'm fine, but dude,
you gotta believe in Kirk Cousins. You gotta buy into
Kirk Cousins. Hey, Kirk's gonna do it. He's gonna figure
it out. And I didn't hear any of that from
Adam DeLand I didn't hear any of that from the
coaching staff, and I definitely didn't hear any of that
from Stefon Dicks. Was I frustrated, Yeah, I was frustrated,
(08:27):
but you know, we got Kirk back there. We'll figure
it out. That's not what Stefon Dick said. That what
Stefon Dick said last year is disappointing. But you had
you say, hey, we had a rookie plate Coller, we
threw the ball too much, Kirk's first year, the wide
receiver's had some drops. Dalvin Cook wasn't right physically, first
(08:50):
year back off an a c L injury. You know,
you can make something alright at some point. Now we
we we thought we had solved the orter back problem
and uh and and he has not solved quarterback problem now,
Josina Anderson said. Stefon Digg says he has not been
(09:13):
asked to be traded, but either he confused himself or
he just confused the hell out of all of us.
But I want you to listen to this one more time,
and you figure out if Stefon Diggs said he wanted
out wanted to be traded, Speculation and stuff that you
might want to be traded along with us and all that. Yeah,
(09:37):
I mean I feel like, uh, I feel like there's
truth to all rumors. I mean, no matter how you
dress it up, I won't be saying nothing on it.
I won't be speaking on it at all. But there's
truths all rumors. I guess that you want to be traded.
I just answered them a question. So you do want
to say, yeah, and what I mean by that? So
(09:59):
I can you know, politely explain, Um, there's a lot
of faculation to meet me afrustrated. Of course. You know,
I had being a being a receiver, and I wanted
to have success. I'm wanting to win. If you want
to win it, you're not winning, of course, you'll bet
that's mine. It's really simple, right, Do you want to
be traded? No? No, no, no. This is the only
(10:22):
organization I know. I don't want to go anywhere. I
want to fix it. But if that's not the answer,
well then that's not the answer. No one said you're
not allowed to be uh, not allowed to be frustrated.
So I also think that there's a curious thing that
happened here. Remember like a week ago, when people were
(10:43):
claiming player empowerment. Maybe two weeks ago, Jalen Ramsey, Hey,
Jalen Ramsey part of this player empowerment. Look at Antonio
Brown had forced his way out of Pittsburgh, forced his
way out of Oakland, got himself to New England. Player
empowerment just like the NBA, Just like the NBA. And
then in the last week the Jacksonville Jaguars have not
(11:08):
and appeared to not be willing to trade Jalen Ramsey.
Stefon Diggs probably said he wanted to be traded, to
which the Vikings said, Napham, get back in there and
fix it. And Melvin Gordon lost a couple million dollars
to sit out because he wasn't gonna be traded by
the Chargers. Do you know why? Because in the NFL,
(11:29):
they don't play. It's not the same sport. They don't
they don't value what the NBA is doing. Doesn't mean
they don't value the players. They think it's bad business.
Funny thing happened on a way to player the player empowerment,
nbaization of the NFL oops Rams insider Vinnie Bonsor joins

O r e UM. Check out his latest piece, The
Game Tonight. Before the Game Tonight with the Rams and
across Roads, Sean McVeigh has only one direction to take them.
Which way is that, Vinnie. I need to get back
to being the physical run team that they are that
(12:54):
they've been the last couple of years. Heavy utilization of
We're not gonna see a heavy alivation of Todd Gurley,
maybe a little bit more than we've seen in the
last few weeks, but but they need to get their
run game, whether it's with Todd or or or Malcolm Brown, Um,
you know, more involved in that phase of the game.
They're better off. Jared off a better quarterback when he
has a run game to lean on what the offensive
(13:15):
line is playing aggressively rather than it's kind of been
a little bit too passive and pensive these last couple
of games. Actually, to start this season, they need to
get back to their roots and then play off of that.
And that's where they've done so much damage is by
building a strong run game, being a physical team, and
then throwing off of that off play action past. It's
gotten away from that for various reasons, and you're breaking
(13:38):
in a new offensive line to new offensive lineman. You've
got this plan in place to preserve Todd Gurley for
the for the length of the season. They want him
strong and available in December and January, which I get,
But they're kind of going about it in a in
a weird sort of a way because they're trying to
It's almost like they want their cake and need it too.
They want to be able to preserve Todd Gurley, which
(13:59):
I get. He's on the sidelines. That makes sense, But
when he's in the game, he has to be fully activated,
and he hasn't been. They've tried to cut corners even
while he is in the game, and it's almost created
a situation whether they're playing with ten players offensively if
you're not going to use top girl, and he probably
just needs to be on the sideline, resting and preserving
when he is in the game, he needs to be
fully activated. Yeah, so, I mean and then and then
(14:24):
tonight tonight where he said he hates Thursday night football games.
It's a quick turnaround. You're trying to protect him long term.
You barely used him last Sunday. How much do you
get used tonight? Well, I mean I think I think
you'll get more than five carries that he did on
on Sunday. Um, it's it's not so much. Look, but
the plan is pretty obvious. You know, they want to
(14:44):
keep him intact for later on in the season. They
felt like there was over usage the last couple of years,
and and you know that there was kind of a
mandate organizationally to say, hey, let's not let's not not
let what happened last year happened again. Over usage led
to wear and care. He wasn't the same player later
on in this season, so it's it's understandable what they're
trying to do. But but what I go back to
(15:04):
is if he's on the field, you can't That's not
the time to preserve him by using him as as
a decoy. I think they'll use him more tonight than
they did obviously on Sunday. Five carrys just isn't going
to get it done. But I also think that they
need to start using their backup Malcolm Brown even more
as well. They need to get back to running the ball,
(15:24):
whether it's with Todd or with Malcolm Brown, just to
establish that physicality and it will help their offensive line.
I've talked to some offensive lineman. They would like to
get back to that kind of aggressive style of play
that they're normal, that they're used to, and I think
that would help Jared Goff because we all know that
he operates better in cleaner pockets. That haven't been the case.
He's been playing under more pressure than any quarterback in
(15:47):
the NFL, so it's a whole new world for him,
you know, playing under pressure and not having a run
game to really lead on. So they're out of whack.
They're out of balance that they'll say, hey, we're three
at one. Uh if you if you profile that out,
we're twelve and four at the end of the year,
and if we get there with a healthier Todd Gurley
weren't a really good position, which understandable, But can they
(16:08):
get to twelve and four with this formula in this
way that they're playing offense. I don't think they can.
As a league caught up to Sean McVeigh. I don't
know necessarily think they've caught up to Sean McVey. I
think that you're doing again. You know, it's it's nuanced.
When you replace two better an offensive lineman, you're gonna
feel that effect unless you're talking about replacing them with
you know, caliber players that that that that you're replacing,
(16:31):
and they just aren't yet. They may Brian Allen and
Joe note Boom may get to that level, but they
aren't there yet. So that's caused a disruption on the
offensive line where we're basically all all starts and Todd
Gurley just isn't being used or isn't Todd Gurley that
we've known in the last couple of years. So I
don't think it's necessarily anyone catching up to them. I
(16:53):
think that they're not as good on the offensive line
and they're not using Todd Gurley the way they normally do,
and that has caused and at obviously when that's happening, teams,
you know, opposing defenses are going to defend you a
little bit differently and they're probably going to be just
a little bit better than they have been because they're not,
you know, having to defend Todd earlier the way they
normally did, and they're operating against the offensive line that
(17:15):
just isn't as good as it it's been the last
couple of years. Yeah, the line you're pointing out, Pro
Football Focus has it ranked the lowest rated offensive line
in the NFL. Is there any fixing that mid season? Um?
I mean you just got to hope that guys get better.
And they knew that there was going to be a
transition process, you know, moving on from Roger Staffold and
John Sullivan to Brian Allen and Joe Joe Noble, and
(17:37):
both of those guys were drafted last year with all
the intentions of playing this year. Um, but they are
two brand new starters and first year starters and second
year players at that with very little experience. Um so
you just have to hope that they get better. But
I mean that's that's hope, hope, and what's really going
to happen Sometimes there are two different things, and that
(17:57):
they don't get that squared away. And by the way,
you know, Andrew Worth is not playing at the level
that he's normally played at. Is he's starting to show
some legitimate aids right now or is it also the
result of not having the kind of help that he's
normally had the last couple of years. Rob havenste in
their right tackle even grading out as well as he
has in yours fast and neither is awesome White there
(18:18):
there right guard. So it's been a collective uh, you know,
decrease in level of play. They have to get back
and be better and and the answers are are within.
I don't expect them to go out and bring anyone
else and unless there's you know, some sort of a
trade that's out there. But the answers are gonna have
to come from within. And unless they get that squared away,
they're gonna be it's gonna be a rough going if
(18:41):
they can't get that text. Doug gotlib show here on
Fox Sports Radio. That's the voice of Vinny b Vinnie
bonson your who's kind enough to spend some time with
this year. Check him out on Twitter at Vinnie Bronson.
Your all right? And then you get to to Jared Goff. Obviously,
the huge new contract he did put up a bunch
of yards. But but but turnovers and t posts come
out and said, hey, look, our game plan was to
(19:02):
make him beat us. What's the level of confidence in
Jared Golf? I think that you know, it's all tied
into he's shown what kind of a quarterback he's capable
of being when things are operating at a high level
around him. Um, And that this that doesn't take anything
away from Charis Cup. There aren't that many humans on
the face of the earth that when things are going
(19:22):
well for you, you're gonna be able to operate at
the kind of level that he's been playing. It's you
have to be that good number one, and he is.
But when your offensive line is protecting you, uh at
the least efficient level in the NFL, you're going to
feel the effects of that. And when you don't have
taught early the normal taught early anymore, you're going to
feel the effects of that. He needs to figure out,
(19:45):
you know, a new world for himself, and that's you're
not going to be You're not gonna have the protection
that you normally do. So you know, you're you're to
be a little more decisive, probably in the pocket. You're
probably have to you donna have to take care of
the ball. You have to know when to take chances
and when to uh, just fold your cards and live
to another plane. And there's been some sketchy moments for
him in that regard. Is you know, he's he's thrown
(20:08):
six interceptions. That's unlike him at this stage of a season.
So he's obviously either trying to force it or or
trying to make things happen. Uh, you know, lack of
talk Gurley and a better offensive line, so he needs
to find that balance of carrying more of a load
with less help m than he's had and and and
you know that's not gonna happen overnight. He's gonna have
(20:30):
to play under these conditions and adapt to these conditions
and make the most of it and then hope that
the offensive line gets better. And as the season goes on,
you're gonna you're gonna involve talk Gurly a little more.
What about the defense? You know, I man, listen, I
understand there were some turnovers, but you know they gave
up some obviously some deep shots to Jamis Winston, and
(20:54):
you know that they've made some changes over there. Where
is this defense in comparison to last year. We'll go
in into in the Sunday's game, it was a top
ten defense and they had just shut out basically, you know,
Baker Mayfield and all the weapons that the Browns have,
and and look what the Browns did the following weeks
against against Baltimore. So they were really playing at a
very high level. Heading into the Tava Bay game, a
(21:17):
couple of things happened. You mentioned the turnovers, you know,
three interceptions, all of which Taba Bay cashed in with touchdowns.
You know, obviously the other touchdown off the turnover was
was the offensive issue. It's a fumble and not got
returned for a touchdown. You know, Marcus Peters did get
beat on the long touchdown by Mike Evans, but that
was zero covered grounds are trying to create some more
(21:39):
pressure up front and so there was no safety help.
He made one wrong step and the NFL. One wrong
step is gonna get you killed. And and Mike Evans
and Jamis Winston uh did exactly that. You gotta give
credit to the Buccaneers. I mean, Winston played as good
as I've seen them ever play. And Bruce arians Uh
drew up a great game plan that they executed, you know, beautifully,
(21:59):
but um, you know worse, some issues exponents. They weren't
able to get much pressure on on Winston Um. And
you know, they did give up some of the big players,
and they didn't stand firm off of the turnovers, which
say I had been doing in the first three games
of the season. Maybe that just kind of caught up
when you live in the world of turning the ball over.
The more times you do that, the more vulnerable your
(22:21):
defense is gonna is gonna be eventually. And they broke
a little bit on Sunday. So I think, if a
better offensive effort, a more efficient offensive effort, and again
I go back to the run game, if you can
extend some drives and keep your defense off the field
a little bit longer, maybe that will help and they'll
get back to how they were playing in the first
three moats of the two should be interesting tonight against
(22:41):
the Seattle team who helped two years ago they blew
the doors off of But for the most part, Uh,
this has been a contentious series, even going back to
when they were in St. Louis. Vinnie, thanks so much

(23:05):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Easter noon Pacific. So,
speaking of weird press conferences, remember yesterday we told you
that Jake Gruden was asked what was the plan at
quarterback in Jake Gruden said, we don't have one. From
Patriots insider Doug uh Kayed, I asked Jake Gruden about
(23:29):
how he would prepare Dwayne Haskins for the Patriots disguise
pre snap, and he went off about how it starts
with protecting the quarterback. We don't have good protection. We
don't have we don't we can't get separation. Tom Brady
wouldn't have any success here. I would say that Jake
Gruden is a little bit frustrated. Right Here's what he
(23:50):
also said yesterday to press conference. She was sort of
this disruption at quarterback right now. I mean, is there
a part of this that could kind of ruin the
development or damage the development of Haskins at all? Which
is the last first year? You know, I think, uh,
you know different quarterbacks. You know, throughout the history of
the NFL, there's guys that are more ready to play early,
and there are guys that may need a year or two.
It's it's it's really dependent on the player, but should
(24:13):
not hinder his development, whether he gets thrown out there
and doesn't perform up to speed, or whether he sits
for a year and and learns the system and continues
to see how to prepare. You know, it's it's not
the end of the world if he doesn't play another snap,
If he starts every game and doesn't do very well,
it's good experience for him. So he can argue both
sides of the coin. Right here, no matter what we
do with him, we're gonna be wrong. Day seems happy.
(24:37):
He Here's the basic synopsis. Okay, I'll give you J
Gruden's perspective, You finally got me a solid quarterback who
knew what he was doing and a solid backup. Last year,
Alex Smith breaks his leg so drastically that he probably
never plays football again. The very next game, Colt McCoy,
(24:58):
his backup, who's a was I started, knows the system,
total pro, breaks his leg in the off season, instead
of instead of solidifying all the other positions of need
that the Redskins have, because they're still carrying the weight
(25:18):
of Alex Smith's contract, waiting on Colt McCoy and bringing
in case Keenum, you go in draft a quarterback who's
not ready to play, is from the area and the
owner loves, and then you pay forty four million dollars
(25:39):
guaranteed to land in Collins. And the Redskins are second
to last in points per game, right, They're they're doing
Redskins things, Redskins things. Only the Dolphins are worse than
points per game. Pretty amazing, right, So you know, like
(26:01):
he's sitting there going like, look, I got a stinker
of a team we have. I mean, basically, the Redskins
have under contract four quarterbacks, the two best one will
never play football again. The other one still not ready.
The guy who's the worst and least ready to help
is the one that ownership and management want to see
(26:23):
in the game. And oh yeah, by the way, our
best offensive lineman doesn't want to work for our franchise anymore,
and we won't trade him and are starting running back.
He is hurt for the year. Again, this is the
old Outside of that, Mrs Lincoln, how was the show?
Tried to explain that expression to my ten year old son,
(26:44):
was like, you know Abraham Lincoln was He's like, yeah,
Abraham Lincoln, sixteenth president, freed the slaves. Yes, do you
know how he died? Don't remember John Wilkes booth at
a theater watching a play. Okay that I tried to
explain to him the joke, and he's like, may be
it's funnier for with adults. I don't think that's funny.
(27:05):
I was like, you gotta trust me anytime you say
outside of that, Mrs Lincoln, how is the show? People
who think it's funny anyway? Redskins are a mess? Who
plays the Redskins this week? Right? Pretty crazy that the
Redskins played. I mean, think of the Patriots and the
(27:26):
schedule they've opened up with granted Bills, they played the Bills,
and the Bills were on fire at three and oh,
but they've already gotten a shot at the Dolphins right
when they got Now, look, they dominated the Pittsburgh Steelers,
who we all thought were gonna be really good. Granted
Steelers have lost their quarterbacks since. But to get the
Redskins already, who has a good feeling you're the Patriots.
(27:49):
They got the Giants coming up to of course they
match up against the NFC U NFC east Man. I
have a curious w NBA story. Have you guys seen
this one? He has new Penny Toler is okay. Penny
Toler was a great player, great player. I believe she
(28:12):
was Long Beach State. Anyway, She's the GM of the
l A Sparks. Derek Fisher is the coach of the Sparks.
Like a week ago, they played in the playoffs and
he benched their top three players and they got blown
out for a from part of the third quarter and
(28:33):
they ended up getting blown out by twenty points. I
guess Penny Toler went in the locker room afterwards, went
crazy and dropped some end bombs. She is, in fact,
black and now like she's under it. It's the I mean,
it's the ultimate w NBA story ever. I who you
(28:53):
got Derek Fisher as a coach benching three players. Nobody
actually knows any of this happened until like a week later,
and it's only because the black woman dropped M bombs
and she's having to say, like, listen, yes, I said it,
but I didn't say directed any players. I shouldn't say it.
But man, in the world of being politically correct, it's
got to be so hard in this world to even
(29:14):
cover the story. It's a bizarre one. Um. Also want
to point out I was right last night on the
Rays raised dominate the A's that'll do Oakland. So now
we we do have a starter, right it is Walker
Bueller gonna start for the Dodgers. Why was that even
a question? I don't understand. Is this that Clayton Kershaw's
(29:37):
ego thing that they had to consider? Why would you
start Clayton Kershaw? I had a Walker Bule. Walker bew
is better picture right now? So the playoffs are in
fact set. We had the divingbacks to the rest of
the American League mix, which of course includes the Yankees,
The astros Um and the Minnesota Twins. You want to
(29:57):
look historically, man, in my lifetime, the Twins never beat
the Yankees and always find a way to lose it
once it gets to the bullpen and it becomes about
the Dodgers kind of bullpen, right, So, fascinated by the playoffs,
the best of the best Major League Baseball playoffs, I
(30:19):
will break it down for you. I think I know
the game it's next. Fox Sports Radio has the best
sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of our
shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within the
I Heart Radio app. Search f s R to listen
live Doug Alive show. You're on Fox Sports Radio getting
ready for Thursday night football? Super excited, Ramos versus Buyer, Right,
(30:43):
It's that's not Rams versus Seahawks. It's Ramos versus Buyer.
Don't don't get it twisted there. It could have been
both games. Have the Brewers won, would have been Dodges
Brewers and then ram Seahawks and both the same night.
Could have been but but but it is not. We
will include this rivalry as we get to a game.
(31:05):
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Buyer
what is the game? The game today, Doug, is a draft,
all right? It's our new game. By the way, our
wives face off in their arm wrestling league tonight, so
that's John and I would also be going head to
head in that one. We'd have to have to see
(31:27):
what what goes down. So if you remember what I
feel a draft is, we hold a draft amongst the crew. Doug, John,
Ryan Music, the executive producer of myself today, Just a
two round draft. Doug, I like, hey, calm an executive
producer like that that that somehow like gives him, I
don't know, some credit. Yeah, what should I call him?
(31:49):
Just producer? Should I just say? Rightly? Doug wants me
to go by that guy who sits in the other room. No, no, no,
But executive producer sounds sounds like Jerry Bruckenheimer and stuff,
right like it does? It really sounds very official. Well,
I guess it's accurate sort of. What about technical producer? Well,
that's technical director, right sure. But John's title is technical producer,
(32:12):
right John? That is correct? Curious is the technical directors
and he directs all of the technical So what what
are you? Technical producer? Technical producer? You could put that
there if you'd like extraordinaire. I like that extraordinaire. All right,
this is what we're gonna draft today. We're going to
(32:33):
draft the best caps worn by baseball teams MLB postseason
and Doug Well, hold on, okay, never mind. I was
going to say, there are ten teams that made the postseason.
Two have already been eliminated, but there are ten teams
that we get to choose from. I will say this,
if there is a certain hat for a team you
(32:54):
can't have, like to like, once a team is gone,
it's gone, like they are. A team may wear multiple
hats throughout the season. Let's just take John for example.
Let's just say John wanted the Brooklyn Dodgers at Yeah,
you gotta wear the hat that they're gonna wear. Sure
like the can't get the well, the team would be gone.
Whichever whatever hat you want, So Doug, you get the
(33:15):
first pick. Who is the what do you want? I
was gonna say, I have a question real quick, Yes
it's the cap that they're gonna be wearing during the playoffs,
or once you pick the team, you can choose whatever
hat maybe in their collection. I would say this that
once a team is gone. It's gone. You can't have
(33:35):
two Yankees caps, not that there are two Yankees, but
so you could be both. You could you could take
I mean, I don't think any teams wearing a crazy
hat this postseason. We'll just put it that way, right,
Is that fair enough? No? They sell the hats with
the little playoffs, yes, but they're not they're like like that,
like the Brewers one. We're going the one they wear
or their best hat. That's what That's what I'm trying
(33:59):
to say is that if you took the M B glove,
you couldn't take the M with the barley on it.
That the Brewers would be dismissed. But when you look
at these teams here here, yeah, I too. I thought
it was pretty Yankees, the most iconic hat and and
all the sports like would we who are we kidding?
(34:20):
I didn't say it's the necessarily the best, like I
like the Brewers and be glove with the white on it,
you know, with the white background in the middle. Like,
but I mean, nobody's beating the Yankees. I just won.
Do you think that I just won? Well, I just won.
Wait till you gotta you gotta you get stuck with
the Twins. I got a red Twins hat. I actually
(34:41):
own a Twins hat, but that that's the uh. I
like it Twins hat. I don't know if I'll be
on the board for me. But do you think jay
Z made the Yankees have more famous than the Yankees? No?
I didn't think so either. All right, who's next up?
All Ryan, executive producer with the second overall pick, guy
who shows up for work every day according to Doug here,
(35:02):
because are off the board, give me the Dodgers loves.
Do you like that hat? Yeah? Who doesn't like that hat?
I just was surprised that Ryan, Like did he choose
it because he likes it? Or did he choose I
do think it's a It's a pretty good looking hat,
but it also is similar to the Yankees. Like that
(35:24):
Dodgers Loco has just become so iconic. You just, yeah,
that's what? Did you say local? I'm going to a
logo later, Ryan? Did you say local? I like it?
The Dyers are local. You've gotta be local for the
you said Loco? Didn't? Did he say? Look all right?
I am going I am next up. I'm the third pick.
(35:47):
I am going with the I don't like this team.
I just think it's a great, great hat. I don't
think I've said it before in this program, and say
lo Wis Cardinals, Say Lois Cardinals. At you know they
invented baseball, right, they play the right way that stl Is.
Just say it's a great look. Plus with the red hat.
I'm going with the Cardinals. John Ramos on the clock.
(36:09):
It's a snake draft. Two rounds, John, you get back
to back picks. Well, the top three that I feel
are gone basically, But I'm gonna jump in there and
I'm gonna take the Twins. I'm with I'm with Doug
on this one. I like the little TC on the
hat for Twin Cities that as well. Yeah, that's a
good pick. Okay, John, Okay, I will take let me
(36:31):
marks the Twins here first. First snake draft for John.
I like he turned his mic off in between picks.
He's going back into the war room, by the way.
Two minutes. I will take the Astros. I like the
little star they have with the H in the middle
of it. So I and so I'll take the Houston
Astros as my next pick. Wow, I like that. Are
(36:52):
you a fan of the TC doug like. I like
it as well. I think it's very unique and it's
very tight into their There's not another hat like it
in the in the big leagues, in the world, in
the entire world, in the entire entire world. I do
think the Braves have a sharp looking hat. But I'm
not going to pass up the Brewers ball in mitt
(37:12):
M ANDB. So I'm gonna take the Brewers at number six.
I gotta agree with you there there, Surprised that one
lasted so long. I am gonna go with I'm just
gonna go with Oakland. I like just the traditional a
or if you can go off cap, I like the
one with the elephant cap that's the elephant in the room.
I think just being a green hat makes it unique. Yeah,
(37:35):
ugly is actually what I was although that do you
like the Okay? Alright, I mean's ugly. Let's just be honest.
I thought they're sharper than the like forest green and
the yellow brims one. Yeah, I mean they're they're they're
they're doing the best. They're polishing a turd. They've been
doing the best stuff. You know. God bless them, really,
(37:56):
God bless them. Alright, you're left with raised gnats are braves.
I can't go with the Rays. I love the braise A,
I really do. But honestly, I think the Nats because
it's an old you know, it's an ode to the
old Washington Nationals, right well, I mean Washington Centators and h.
(38:17):
Walgreen's as well, and Walgreen's as well. Um, now you
know what I'm going braids, And I'll tell you why.
Tomahawk Chop, tom hawk chop. You know it's it's probably
not politically correct. Whatever, somehow they got away with it.
They haven't had to change their name. Um, Atlanta Breys.
I'm gonna go with the Atlanta Braves, a staple of
(38:37):
my lifetime, my childhood, even though they were terrible like
the first ten years of my life, then they were
awesome most of my adultsood. All right, So there's our picks.
Michael Rappboard joins the show. He's he's a New York guy.
Is he buying Daniel Jones? And is he buying my
assessment that the New York Yankees cap is the greatest
in the history of world. Be sure to catch the
(38:57):
live edition of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at
three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
in the Heart Radio, ah app, What up to Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Welcome to the greatest month ever created
the history of mankind. I love October. Yeah, NBA teams
(39:20):
getting back together. College football cranks up in terms of intensity.
You got oh you in Texas, Oh you in Texas
and Dallas. I believe that's next week, right. College football
cranks up. NFL we're out of that first quarter and
starting tonight Thursday night football rivalry games, games that matter.
(39:42):
But she also got Major League Baseball's playoffs and the
last night we were the night before was outstanding, and
generally we get a ton of drama. Ramos is big
on the hockey that's back in. I know with the pucks.
That's that's big. Dan Buyer's got that Wayne Gretzky interview
which is taking uh, taking Dan to all new heights,
(40:05):
um because it's an outstanding If you haven't listened to interview,
it's out, really really good. Go to Fox Sports Radio
dot com. But I love to postseason baseball, and we
were just doing a baseball do you Go Hat? Do
you Go? Lid? Do you Go? Cap? Music you grew
up in the valley in Los Angeles. I need I
(40:27):
need to find my what do you call it? I
would I would go with hat hat hat hat. We
we don't in California. We don't like people like what
do you call your soda? Do you call pop? Do
you call it? I always grow up we call everything
a coke? Yeah? Yeah, again, I'll take a coke? What
kind dr pepper? You right? Even though it's not ramos?
What do you call it? Do you all a hat? Lid?
(40:48):
I have CAP? I don't know if this is bad.
I've never used the terminology lid ever for a hat.
I just always called it a hat. I think it's
a new thing. Well not you knew of it. Not
that Dan Buyer grew up in Wisconsin's traveled all over.
He's uh, you know, made his way out to the
West coast. Dan, what do you call that? That piece
(41:11):
of a cruise when you put on your your dome
when you go to a baseball game. I'm with John
and have never really used lid. I've used hat more
than I've used cap, but I'm not exclusive to lit.
It's a hat. I've used cap before, but never really lid.
If you're in the zone of foul ball. Is it
okay to bring a glove to a even to a
to a playoff game. I've never been a glove guy. Okay,
(41:37):
I have to hold my salted peanuts, dogs, salted peanuts.
Your peanuts are salty. Michael Rappaport joins us, he's got
a tour. Uh stand up? Uh? Stand up comment? Is
that what it is? A stand up comment? Tour? Is that?
What's called you in d C this weekend at the
d C Improv in New York City and Carolines, well
(41:58):
famous Carolines. He's me on the stage that's on the
seventeen through the nineteen. Go to Michael Rappaport comedy dot com.
Do you call it a cap? Do you call it
a lid? What do you call it? Um? Are you
asking me? Doug? Well, first of all, I call it
a hat. Okay, if you're gonna wear like some sort
of accouterment like a jazz hat like you're out, you know,
(42:21):
like like some sort of you know, like cute hat,
maybe then if I'm if I'm being sarcastic, I will
call it a cap. But but I have to say,
I mean, maybe maybe the copy was sell wrong. It's
stand up comedy, and I would expect your improvisational skills
in your college education and be like, oh, maybe it's
spelled wrong where there's an e left off for a while.
It's stand up comedy. I didn't listen on the copy.
(42:43):
I'll take a picture and send you a copy of it.
It says stand up comment comment. Now that's what he said.
What I'm saying. I didn't know if like that was.
I was like, man, maybe he's got some funny stand
up comment joke that he wants me to set up
for it. No, dog, you're a pro your college education.
You're a worldly guy. You've seen the world, but you
be able to have some improvisational skills to be like, oh,
(43:06):
it's comedy. Uh, you know, go through it's it's it's
the the Disruptive stand Up Comedy Tour. I'm on it
right now. I'm actually in DC right now. Beautiful, beautiful time.
I'm always excited to talk to you. Um, you know,
it's coming up on the greatest time of the year
in sports. We have the NBA looming, we have the
NFL getting into full swing. We have a baseball playoff,
(43:29):
and and and and I'm on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
Although you disappointed me with that, I mean, that's the
second time I have to say that will go down
as the second time disappointed me. Of course, the first time.
You know where I'm going with it is during the
Celebrity All Star Game when you picked somebody up full court.
I was trying to win the quarter and I did.
I gotta steal on the layup, and I felt good
about myself. I mean, you you crushed me on ESPN,
(43:51):
but I felt I felt fine about myself, all right, Right,
if I if I, if I'm gonna try, I'd rather
try too hard than than not try hard enough. Um,
are you Yankees? Are you Yankees? Yankee? Yankee guy, aren't you?
I'm a Yankee guy. I'm not a big baseball guy.
I just want to go just back off of that thing.
You scared everybody at the game. I just want to
let you know, like everybody was scared, the women, the
(44:13):
children at the game, people at home, like what's this
guy doing? Why is he full core pressing? It's a
celebrity All Star game. I just want to let's move forward.
But I just want you to know when you when
you toss and turn on the pill tonight. Just know like,
oh wow, I scared people. It's goodhead, I'm okay with that.
It's like, it's like parenting. That has to be a
little bit of fear there, right, not uncomfortable amount of fear,
(44:33):
but a little a little bit of fear there, a
little bit. Are you are you? Were you always in
the not like you're are you leading the Daniel Jones charge?
Are you big on Daniel Jones? Well? I might have
been on when you were guest hosting for Colin. I
might have been on there just like everybody else, going
what the f why are we picking up a football
(44:54):
player from Duke? But my, my, my tone and my, my, my,
my whole thing has changed immediately. I'm very impressed with him. Listen.
You know, we have a lot a lot ways to go,
a lot of ways to go to improve the team.
But the thing that I like about him is he's composed.
He seems like an NFL quarterback, and that's what I
like so far. Well, tell me if I'm mistaken. The
(45:16):
Giants are two in two. Listen, who knows where we're
gonna go from here, But the fact that we're two
and two right now, the way it started off, I'm
I feel I feel fine. You know, it's amazing about it.
The Giants are taking on the Minnesota Vikings this weekend.
And if I would have told you two months ago
that Daniel Jones would be starting and Giant fans are
(45:38):
good with their quarterback situation, Kirk Cousins is starting for
the Minnesota Vikings and they are completely apoplectic beside themselves
about their quarterback situation. You would have told me, Doug Gotlieb,
you are certifiably insane. But that's actually where we are
right now. I just got to back up again. I'm sorry, Um,
I know we're trying to make a full private What's
(45:58):
the word you just used for what? Apoplectic? Apoplectic? You
know you know how to use the word apoplectic going
full speed on live radio, but you couldn't figure out
Michael Rapport's stand up comedy. Are you apoplectic? I never
even heard that words an impressive word that you you are, Apple, Honestly,
(46:20):
you are a lot of times you're apoplectic, um uh
many many times on radio, like you know, when you're
on with Stern and about his fans on fantasy stuff
or you know, when you're going after the president on
social media like you are beside yourself. You are apoplectic.
I need to throw that word in my vocabulary anyway. Yes,
(46:42):
that's a very good point that you brought up. Overcome
with anger, extremely indignant. That's apoplectic A P O P
L E C T. I c apoplectic all that, but comedy.
You couldn't. You couldn't figure out. I couldn't. I listen,
I did the Ron Burgundy thing, sue me, the the
the the Giants. That's a great point. No one would
(47:03):
have thought that. I thought that the the the kirk Cousins,
Minnesota Vikings with Stefan and uh. I got a feeling feeling, um,
you know, would be would be a scoring uh you
know Juggernaut. I thought those guys would be putting up
points with Dalvin, who I have in my fantasy football team.
I don't know what's going on out there. Um, it's
(47:24):
surprising to everybody. Yes you, yes you do. Kirk Cousins
is that super nice au G Chuck's guy. And the
truth is like, that's not really how it works in
professional sports. You didn't get the ball get open next time,
and I'll see if I can get it to you.
He's so apologetic, he's so nice. He he does doesn't
have the he doesn't have the lower intestinal fortitude for
(47:44):
this job. Do you think it'll turn around for the
Not that I care, like, I don't care about the Vikings.
The only thing I care about the Vikings for is
in regard to my fantasy football. Um, but but do
you think they'll like do you think there's any chance
of this being a high scoring game with the Giants
this week? And I'm making it better be? It better be?
The Giants defense is not very good, right like, no one,
(48:05):
no one would argue otherwise Giants even is not very good.
And uh, they have to give some confidence to people
otherwise they're gonna lose. Stefon Diggs, Like, take a listen
to this. I'll play this for you because I know
you're busy with your stand up comment tour. Jesus. This
this is Stefon Diggs earlier today. Speculation and stuff that
(48:26):
you might want to be trading, speculation along with rumors
and all that. Yeah, I mean I feel like, uh,
I feel like there's truth to all rumors. I mean,
no matter how you dress it up. I won't be
saying nothing on it. I won't be speaking on it
at all. But there's truths, all rumors. I guess the
rumors that you want to be traded. I'll just answered
them a question. So you do want to be trading?
(48:48):
Did I say? Well, rumors? And what I mean by that?
So I can you know, politely explain? Um, there's a
lot of speculation to meet me appreciated of course, you know,
and being a receiver and m wanting to have success
and wanting to win. If you want to win it,
you're not winning, of course, you'll be preserve. That's how
is he the only guy that doesn't think he said
(49:09):
he wanted to be traded with those statements? You know what?
You know what? The thing is a lot with with
these athletes, but but particularly with these receivers. Yo, the
guy asked you a point blank question. You know, everybody's like, Yo,
I'm this, I'm here from my career. You're you're putting
out all the insinuation. He asked you the question. You
want to be a big guy. You want to be
(49:29):
in control of your career. You you want to be
more than an athlete. You want to be more than
a player. That was your chance to do it, and
you didn't do it. So either be either really go
full fledged and be that dude and be fully disruptive
and own everything you're thinking, saying and feeling, or shut
up like it doesn't make any sense to me. Why
(49:52):
why are you playing in the middle group? You want
to be traded? Say you want to be traded, and
and let's let's let's let's see if it's gonna happen.
Otherwise stop playing. All these show up to practice and
and if I'm going to own aroun, I'm a coach
and I'm a gym. I start finding these guys because
just because things are going good, your four games into
the season, you're throwing a histy fit. You know, what
can you do to make the team better? What can
(50:12):
I do to make this show better? I'm on this
show right now. What am I gonna do to make
this show better? I think about that. I think about
that before I pick up the phone. My friend, Mi amigo.
That's bilingual. Michael Michael Michael Rapport uh DC improv This
weekend Carolines in New York the seventeenth and the nineteen.
(50:33):
It's the stand Up Comedy Now Tour, our stand up Comedy,
Stand Up Comment Tour. I'm not really sure exactly h
exactly what it is. It's indignant, that's what it is.
You'll be apoplectic that you didn't see more of or
hear more of. Uh. Michael Rappaport, All right, let's let's
get to kind of your wheelhouse. Uh. Lebron now wants,
(50:53):
you know, highst college players to get paid for appearances.
He wants all these things. Now. He's also saying, hey,
if we're not playing through Anthony Davis, then we're wrong.
He's saying, get the ball to Anthony Davis, don't get
the ball to me. What's your reaction when Lebron James,
who thinks of himself as the greatest player ever, is
saying pass the ball to somebody else when the Lakers
(51:14):
take the floor. I don't. I don't buy any of that.
But but but but to the first thing that you
brought up with, the college thing. I love how he
wants to sit here and take credit like he he
came up with the idea Champion did, Champion did and
got it done. That college players are gonna get paid.
I I love how he wants to sort of be
the face of that this has been in the works.
(51:36):
It's not done. It's a bunch of propaganda which he
put out on his show. And and this is this
is just another like thick strong, lay a log into
the fire of why this guy, in my opinion, is
the fakest guy in the NBA. Uh with with all
that nonsense, he's literally trying to take credit like he's
the guy that's that's getting this done. It's ridiculous. Um,
(51:59):
as far as ain't through Anthony Davis, I think that's
the right thing to say. At the end of the day,
he's still top one, top two, top three player in
the league. I hope he's healthy, um, you know, and
I hope that, you know, the whole league remains healthy.
It's gonna be exciting. Uh you know at the end
of the day. Uh, you know, he's gonna have the
(52:20):
ball in his hand the most out of any laker.
I don't care who they, you know, give the the
title of point guard. It's Lebron James. He's not playing
off the ball is never gonna happen until maybe his
very very last year's when if he ever runs out
of gas and he still plays um but but you
know it's gonna be It's gonna be sick. I can't
wait for this season to start. I mean, I'm even
(52:42):
watching preseason games and whoever cares about NBA preseason, but
just to see, you know, little tidbits of the chemistry
that's gonna be developing on all these teams. No one
will have the chemistry that you and I have. Unfortunately
we have yet to tour together. Uh my comedy act,
your comedy act. Apparently they can't coincide. If you want
to check out Michael Rappaport, who of course rased me
during the Celebrity All Star Game nearly a decade ago
(53:06):
and will not let me forget it. Uh, feel free
to do so this weekend. D c improv. He gets
a piece, He gets a little bit piece of the pie.
If you show up so so so, rattle rattle was
caged a little bit. Rapport, let's wrap when you get
in town. Thanks for joining us. That's my guy, Michael Rapport.
Good dude, good dude. Um am, I the worst guy
(53:29):
ever that I want to chieve while who had honest
question by are my bad human being? Because I want
to achieve while who had like I and and for
the record, you guys, this is before we ever worked together.
I was I was the guy saying like we should
not change the Redskins logo and all of a sudden
(53:49):
that that was like one of those deals to wear
dance is like not doing it too much equity in it.
Am I a bad guy for saying? You know, I
don't to see Indians hat? I want the cheap wah
who hat. I think it's really cool. Does that make
me a bad guy? I don't think it makes you
a bad guy. Did you think we were going to
(54:09):
change the Redskins logo or nickname back when that was
a controversy slash controversy, I'm gonna say about what three
and a half years ago. I didn't. I don't think
that it's going to be changed. I don't think so either.
Did you think it should be um? I don't. I don't.
I don't take any offense to it. But I'm sorry
(54:34):
I was. I'm talking to rapport. We're talking about a hat.
You've got me super excited about it. I'm on lids
and I'm like, that's all right. I just put a
graphic up on Twitter as well, which I think it's
actually pretty good with Microsoft paint guys. Nice. I just
like the fact that you started a segment. I didn't
even hear anything. Rapports said, I'm so into which hats
I should buy? Really? Saints linebacker A. J. Klein joins
(54:57):
the show. Up coming next, what they do to shut
down is chcke Elliott and how loud was that dome?
Find out next, be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter Noon Pacific Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports. Uh, the
the the story of the weekend. I would say, like,
you know, there's lots of little stories, but for the
(55:19):
Samets now to be two and oh without Drew Brees
pretty remarkable. Then you factor in their two and oh
and they beat Seattle in Seattle, and then they beat
the Cowboys at home without scoring a touchdown, and remember
four For a good four or five years there it
was man Drew Brees only had a defense. And if
(55:40):
he only had a defense, Drew Brees would have gotten
and one another super Bowl or two. Well they clearly
have one. The defense was the story. Drew Brees didn't
even play Teddy Bridgewater did and Uh. A J. Klein
when they start linebackers joins us in the Doug Gottlieb
Show on Fox Sports Radio. A J. How are you.
I'm doing fantastic. Thanks for having me on. Um. If
(56:01):
I were to tell you at the start of the year,
you guys are gonna go into Seattle and win, beat
the Cowboys at home, and do so without Drew playing
a snap, what would you have said? I mean, I
wouldn't have believe you. I mean I would have I
would have wanted to have Drew not be injured. Um.
But now that we're in the situation, I mean, we
(56:21):
have all the confidence and Teddy and and he's been
doing a great job leading this team and leading this offense.
But UM, I think I think that if you would
ask me as well, are we gonna win? I would
have said, yes, that's the best. Just the confidence I
have in this team and this defense. Uh to go
out and perform week after week. But uh, yeah, I
mean quite the turn of events for the first four games.
But I feel like we're in a good a good spot.
(56:44):
What was the game planning against the Cowboys? Um? Obviously
try to limit Zeke um and and uh, get back
off his rhythm and and and get him pressured. Um.
And obviously we didn't perform the best the first few
weeks against the run, and then that's something that we
were really strong against last year. I thank you either
were first or second league rush defense. So something we
(57:06):
had to kind of go back to the drawing boarder
or go back in and refocus our our minds and
shutting down this run game. And I think obviously we
did that and we did a great great job doing that.
We got off off the fields on third downs. Uh,
things that we can clean up. Obviously, we penalize ourselves
a little bit too much offensively and defensively, put ourselves
behind the sticks on offense and defensive defensively, I think
(57:28):
we allowed them uh two or three first downs. I
think because the penalties on third down so small things
we can show up. But um, I think we actually
execute the name plan well and UH coaches put together
a game plan that worked great. So just excited for
this week. A J. Klein joining us in the Doug
Got Live show on Fox Sports Tradio. Obviously you're on
(57:49):
that Super Bowl, Uh, that NFC Championship Super Bowl team
with Carolina Panthers, and you guys had a great lineback
core of course Luke and Shack Thompson, as well as
yourself and others, UM, but it was that That's a
year where I know Cam won the m v P,
but the story was you guys ran the football, you
(58:09):
stopped the run, You had an incredible defense, and Cam
was able to to be kind of Cam. UM. Are
there any parallels here in terms of in those defensive
meeting rooms, not just the talent and athleticism, but as
things are coming together, do you feel it being anywhere
near the same. I think it is, and I think
(58:29):
and I felt this way the past few years, and
how well we've been playing, and I think the offense
has been complimented defense and vice versa UM, and I
think just the field of the whole thing. Obviously we
didn't finish last season the way we wanted to, UM,
but as far as the field and the culture that
was being built in the locker room and just how
much fun guys were having and at the end of
(58:50):
the day, like this is still a game, and if
if you lose, lose having fun on the week to week, preparation,
day to day, if you just can't go out and
enjoy what you're doing. I mean, that takes a lot
of energy out of you. And that's one thing that
we didn't lose all season last year, and that's the
one thing that we're still building on from last year.
End of this season, I think we go out and
(59:10):
we just enjoy the preparation. We enjoy being on the field,
We enjoyed being around our teammates, and I think even
being on the road, even dropping that game in l
A but going to Seattle, winning on the road, having
almost kind of like a mini training camp again was
big for this team in in the team building aspect.
And all right, we dropped one. Um, how are we
going to respond to adversity and being on the road
(59:31):
two weeks back to back on the West Coast before
we have to go back and play a very very
talented Cowboys game. But I'm very, very proud of how
this team responded to that adversity and and getting a
win in Seattle and then didn't win last week. Like
I said, we're stacking these bricks week by week by week,
um and momentum starting to build and shift into our
I mean, everything is moving how we want to move it.
(59:52):
It did feel like, uh, I feel like you punked
him a little bit, right like? It did it just
it felt like, you know, a mar he kind of
lost his jews forgetting open the offensive line. That that
offensive line of tyring got hurt. But their offensive line
wasn't you know, it wasn't blowing you guys off the ball.
It felt like you met aggression with aggression and and
(01:00:13):
with a little bit of help from from that from
the fans, like kind of felt like you punked him.
Is that is that too bold a statement to make?
I think it might be too too bold of a
statement to make. I want to say punked. That's obviously
the term is is obviously, but but you know, like
it in and it's how it's taken by a fan
is not necessarily how it's taken in a locker room,
(01:00:35):
right Like, that's definitely I think. I think coming in
and and and watching the game after afterwards, we knew
it was gonna be a smashed mouth football game. We
knew that it was gonna be a battle of the
front sevens, and we do what we needed Marsan to
play well on the outside against the Marii um. We
had the highlights we had obviously, we had a mar highlighted,
we had Dack highlighted, we had Zeke highlighted. And but
(01:00:59):
at the end of the day, it's still everything had
to come together, and it was who's going to play
the most completely game. But we look back and we
didn't play our best defensive football game. Me personally, I
know I made some mistakes. I can be better on um.
Gave up a long pass to they're tight end down
the middle of the field. That was on me. I
take responsibility for that. I mean each guy. You asked,
(01:01:19):
each guy on this team. This is one thing I
love about the defense too. You ask any guy, to
a man, what can you do better? What? What play
did you leave on the field. Every single guy is
gonna give you at least two or three plays like
a wish I had that one back. And I think
that's the best part. We're not we're not sitting, We're
not being complacent with how we played, and that's that
shows one of the maturity and it shows obviously the
(01:01:40):
competitive nature of the defense. Yeah, I mean, he can't
keep you by jessu Win. He's eighty four years old.
He took a year off last year to broadcast and
and now all of a sudden he's out out running
out running guys at his age A J. Klein joining
us on the Doug got Leap Show. All right, so
looking ahead, now you have Tampa. Last time they were
in your building, they thrilled you, guys grand a Week
one of last season. It was Ryan Fitzpatrick. It's not
(01:02:01):
Jameis Winston. But they're coming off a huge win. They
put fifty five on the fifty five on the rams. Yeah,
what what about their offense has allowed them to be
so they're a they're a misfield go away from being
three and one. What's allowed them to be so much
better this year? So I think you take a look
at them on tape. They're very dedicated to the run game,
(01:02:22):
and and they're very physical upfront, and they're gonna keep
pressing and doing what they do. They don't they don't
get away from what they want to do. And you
look at what Bruce arians and did in Arizona kind
of the same thing. Run the ball and take the
top off, play action and UM one. You have explosive
wide receivers on the outside, guys that can separate, create
um active, active, tight ends in the past game as well.
(01:02:43):
But when they when they decided to run the ball,
they're gonna try to force it down your throat. Um,
and I kind of draw parallels between them and what
the Cowboys are about. Um, they're gonna run their run
plays and basically like, hey, can you stop it? And
and um, I think it's a bit. It's a great
defensive challenge for us again this week. Um. Obviously the
lineup and we're looking forward to that physical game again.
(01:03:04):
So it's gonna be a challenge. And uh, we know
it's gonna be a smashma football again. And our front
seven has to have to work together with our back seven. Obviously,
we gotta stop to run. They gotta keep everything short
up in the front and not letting balls you over
the top. So um, yeah, I mean we're excited. It's
gonna be a great opportunity in another great games. Can
(01:03:25):
I ask you something real quick about Iowa State, like
when you were there, you guys, don't No, I'm not
gonna ask you about the Iowa game and two guys
running into each other when you got a chance to
return upon I'm not I'm not gonna I'm not gonna
add salt to that open wound. I do think it's
crazy how much things have changed in such a short
period of time, right, Like, you know, there was a
period of time where you guys maybe not wearing Kansas Bad,
(01:03:48):
but just a step ahead of Kansas Bad. And now
the expectations are remarkably different. Well, I want to say
when I was there, I just gonna want to clarify
that when we were there. When I was there before
my last season two thousand twelve, I thought we had
a pretty good team. Um, we lost a lot of
close games. Uh, and that hurts obviously. We were run
of the mill six and six team where I thought
(01:04:09):
we could have been an eight nine win team easy. Um,
but that's just the way it goes. But yes, I
do believe that the change and the culture change with
bringing in Matt Campbell and bringing in um they I mean,
they've been recruiting their their tails off, bringing in kids
from all over the country, UM and bringing in talented
players as well. And uh, it's great to see. I
would stay being competitive, and I mean I feel like
(01:04:29):
we're always a competitive team, but nobody counted us or
looked at us to win those games. You know what
I mean. Now, it seems like we we line up
against Oklahoma or Texas or whatever team has ranked in
the Big Twelve at the time. I expect, as a
as a former player and uh now a fan, I
expect us to line up and win those games. And
I think everybody else, I think that culture is trying
(01:04:51):
is starting to change, and I think other teams um
are seeing us not as just a kind of all
this team is gonna roll over for us. We're always
gonna play tough, and um, I think a credit obviously
the Matt Campbell of their entire staff. And I'm just
looking forward to this day where I can actually get
back on campus and see a game of person. It's
been I haven't been back since I left, so but yeah,
they're doing a great job. You can be you can
(01:05:12):
be blown I'm sure you can be blown away by
the difference. Yeah, I mean it's and it's awesome. I
went to the spring game a few years ago. But man,
two tough losses this year. Already obviously down twenty nothing
to come back last week, first Baylor to to lose
it on the last second few goal and then I
only want to talk about Iowa game. I really appreciate
you joining us. Best of luck this weekend against Tampa,
(01:05:33):
and thanks so much be our guests on Fox Sports Radio. No,
I appreciate thanks for having me on. Guys, all right,
that's A J. Klein joining us on the Doug Gottlips
Show on Fox Sports Radio. Fox Sports Radio has the
best sports talk lineup in the nation. Catch all of
our shows at Fox sports Radio dot com and within
the I Heart Radio app search f s R to
listen live. Uh mets the middle of the road in
(01:05:57):
terms of overall pitching they have to. I mean, the
gram has been amazing, but I do think it's I mean,
like look part of the Mickey Callaway losing his job
as he wasn't hired by Brodie van Wagenen. That's really
kind of what it comes down to. On the other hand,
Bertie van Wagner doesn't get rid of the pitching coach,
doesn't give her to the hitting coaches like not you're
the problem. Let's start over. Are the Patriots in trouble?
As the injuries pile up, we'll discuss next. Be sure
(01:06:20):
to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottleap Show
weekdays at three p m Easter noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio. Ah app at
what is it at? Harsha Charles was apparently a Ravens fan, said, awesome,
(01:06:42):
listen to A. J. Klein forty seven on the god
Leave Show. Thanks for listening, and yeah, I thought A
J was awesome as well. Every day at this time
the Doug Gotlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio, we
try and play for you a little piece of a
previous show on Fox Sports One or Fox Sports Radio.
We call it. This was Chris Carr Hall of Famer.
First things first, the TV show talking about the Patriots
(01:07:02):
replacing their kicker who will missed the rest of the season.
When I go through the fifty three man roster, and
Belichick is the best in the business. Yes, if he
gets a journeyman left guard, can he show him some
things technique wise with him and Dante Skarnekia or have
they had another player in a similar situation that they
can adapt to and show him some things that you
(01:07:23):
know something he's not that good. We'll have left tack
will help him. We'll have a fullback in the game
to be able to help him. We'll Bringna the tight
end they will help him. We'll do a lot of
smoking mirrors where people won't know. You can't attack that guy.
We're not gonna drop Brady back fifty times. Every position
on the team Belichick can do that for except the kicker,
because the kicker outside the long snapper and the holder,
(01:07:46):
he's a man on the island. He is by himself.
So all that intel, all that knowledge that Belichick has
that he puts into winning every single game, he's not
gonna build help. You said some of the kickers that
that he's been there. Oh since the kickers they're trying
out how Blair Walsh is one of them. It's it's
how to scrub their brain because all of them got
(01:08:06):
awful memories as far as in this league. That's why
they're unemployed. They signed Mike Nugent and then Uh Young Way,
who they put on the practice squads. They've got two kickers.
You're like, look, they have some injury issues, nothing compared
to what the what the Chargers have. There's a couple
other teams that have these massive injuries as well. But
(01:08:27):
the history of the Patriots should be told as such.
They are the best waiver wire team in the history
of the NFL, No one evaluates him. Note evaluates what
they need and what's available as well as the Patriots.
And so that's been tested time and again. It's gonna
be tested this year. And then the kicker thing. You've
gotta be a little bit lucky, right You gonta be
(01:08:50):
a little bit lucky. Do you take a kicker who
has the talent and has the experience of being in
the NFL, but they also have some demons? Or do
you take an unproved been kicker? And they went with
Mike Nugent, who has some good history and some bad history.
That's why he's on the open market. But I don't
think that's indicative of the Patriots being in trouble. I
think the Patriots ability to plug those gaps as part
(01:09:13):
of what's made them so successful for years. This from
the Associated Press. Jaguar's owner Shod Khan has no plans
to trade Jayalen Ramsey. Best thing is to have and
be part of the team. Ramsey not expected to practice
again today. Remember when the NFL was becoming like the
n v A and players determine where they're gonna go.
(01:09:36):
Was that like two weeks ago? And what I say
to you. It's different. Like even Melvin Gordon, who has
come out and said I'm going to be a free
agent at the end of this year. Not really, because
all the Chargers have to do is slap the franchise
tag on him, and there goes your ability to bid
yourself on free and free agency. Now, they still may
(01:09:58):
find a trade partner, he may signed a long term deal.
There may be a way in which, uh, he gets
out of town. But the Chargers absolutely don't have to
let him. They do not. And the same goes for
Jalen Ramsey. He can want a new contract, he can
show up in the brings truck, he can pitch a fit,
he can say his back hurt, say he's sick, Go
and be with the you know, go and be with
(01:10:20):
his uh, his wife and newborn child. But but the
fact is really really simple. If they don't want to
get rid of him, they don't have to get rid
of The NFL and the NBA are not the same.
And these NFL owners they don't blink, most of them don't.
Most of them don't because they know how those contracts
(01:10:42):
are written, which are much more protein. It also shows
and and maybe Antonio Brown has backed up that in
order to absorb the type of cap hit the Steelers absorbed,
and to let Antonio Brown go shows how badly they
want him out the door because they could have held
onto Antonio Brown, they had him under contract, didn't have
to do anything. They just wanted him gone out the building.
(01:11:03):
And that's not the case for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Jaguars
sitting there going, hey, we're two and two. We want
Jill and Ramsey back. Why do we have to give
him up? Why do we have to trade him? We
can't get appropriate value for a guy we think is
really good. He doesn't like it. He wants to win,
come be a part of us. They've won the last
two games. I don't think that's crazy. But this whole
(01:11:26):
idea that the the NFL players have wanted to the
NBA players for years, they've had holdouts for years, they've
had they ain't changed. They ain't changed, and good for
NFL teams because I don't believe it's good for NBA
business what happened within Anthony Davis last year. The NBA
may have looked into having this parody and having superstars
(01:11:48):
to be spread out for now, but the way in
which they've gone about it has not been great for business.
It's made the regular season utterly unwatchable. And why would
you buy a ticket late in the year when you
have no idea if your favorite players even going to
make the trip, let alone play in the game. I
was thinking about Sean McVeigh and the Rams are taking
on the Seahawks night Thursday Night Football. I was thinking
(01:12:12):
about them, and as I was trying to find a
comp in the business world, I think I think I've
discovered it. Sean McVeigh is at that point in his
career where we're gonna have to see a second pitch.
We'll get to that up coming next in The Doug
Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
(01:12:35):
p m. Easter noon Pacific. What Up, Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio, Happy Thursday to Major League Baseball's playoffs
are here and we have NFL Football, the National Football League. UM,
(01:12:59):
I need Buyer. I know he's busy, and I need
Ramos on this one. You guys helped me out. I
believe and tell me if I'm wrong, Like even when
when Jeff Fisher was the coach of the Rams. The
Rams always played the Seahawks close, always, and occasionally they
nipped them. They got them right, and then when the
(01:13:20):
Rams got good. Last year, for example, they're both the
games were close. I was a weird The last game
the year was super weird where Seattle I felt like
they had a chance to win and they just they
kind of gave up. Um. But the only real blowout
I can remember was two years ago. The Seahawks had
(01:13:42):
all kinds of injuries, all kinds of dysfunction. It was
the last year Richard Sherman. They were a lot of infighting,
and the Rams went in there and just kicked the
living crap literally then crap out of the Seahawks right
that it was like ten or something like Dad, that
sounds right. Yeah, it was high scoring game, yes, seven seven,
(01:14:09):
It wasn't that close, right. Like the Neon greens Neon greens,
and I I like the Grays best. I like the
gray uniforms with a little touch of neon green there,
but the Neon greens are cool. Um. Kind of interesting
how the Seahawks went from having among the ugliest uniforms
in the NFL to probably among the coolest uniforms in
(01:14:31):
the NFL, Right, I do think they're old. Helmets are
really cool. That's what I'm talking about with the with
the Seahawk, with the silver with the blue seahawk, those
are cool. Do they ever break those out anymore? Do
we ever said we've seen those recently? What's the hell
in rule? They can't just paint them? I like the
(01:14:59):
crimson calls. This also answers the question to what buyer
does the rest of his day? Right, It's like, I'm
I'm uh, Lisa, sorry, I'm reviewing the helmet rule right now,
(01:15:22):
the Rams are considered the better team and the Seahawks
play them close, right that that's that's fair. Um. Look, look,
Mariano Rivera got away with one pitch. But Mario Rivera
was also a closer. He's the greatest closer ever. And
part of being a closer is not necessarily about having
(01:15:43):
great stuff. It's more about being able to process the
all the external pressures, the high leverage situations, and still
be yourself, still locate the ball. U It helped that
he's at the Yankees. He did blow two massive saves
to go on against the Red Sox and another one
against the Diamondbacks. Otherwise they might have had two more
(01:16:03):
World Series. But Mayra Rivera is the greatest closure ever.
He did it with one pitch. Outside of that, everybody
else has gotta have a second pitch. Right, what's at
the second time around the order? That's what they always say, right,
second time around the order. Now a sudden people kind
of figure you out. That's where we are with Sean McVeigh. Now,
(01:16:25):
I believe Sean McVeigh. Whether you want to say he's
a genius or he just kind of gets it. I
think he's I think he's everything he's been billed to be.
I do um. But I also believe that he's going
to have to continue to evolve. It's gonna have to
(01:16:46):
continue to evolve, and as people adjust to what you're doing,
you're gonna have to find the next thing. Chip kelly
Is knows this, but U c l A. They're still
having to kind of figure some stuff out. Because when
he first took over his offensive coordinated Oregon and brought
this high powered offense from New Hampshire, they took the
college football world by storm. Remember they had Dennis Dixon
(01:17:08):
was their quarterback. Ys then they took the college football
world by storm. But now everybody runs some form of tempo.
Maybe now not the same stuff, but a lot of
people are doing some similar things and try and take
advantage of some of the mispatches that they're able to create.
(01:17:31):
And so it's it's on Sean McVeigh to show that
he has another gear. This is like, if Sean McVeigh
was in the business world, I kind of feel like
he might be Netflix, because do you guys remember what
Netflix originally was, right, they send you a DVD in
(01:17:52):
the mail. It was like door to door Blockbuster, Like, man,
this is awesome, door to door Blockbuster. And then all
of a sudden, now there they're worth more than Disney.
Why because they make their own content. Because they everything
(01:18:12):
is about streaming. You can get it on your phone,
unbelievad like it's it's the rebirth of documentaries, so many
incredible things. And I think for McVeigh that's kind of
when he got there. He was about everything looks the same.
We're built on running the football, pushing it to the edge,
(01:18:34):
running everything off of that same look. Right, we got
a jet sweep, we got we got the old fashioned
student body, Right, we got a jet sweep, and if
that fails, we pull it back and we throw it.
We we throw it in space to one of our
talented wide receivers. But what happens when you're running back
is worn down. What happens when your offensive line isn't
(01:18:54):
as good, What happens when you don't have to commit
eight guys to stopping tie Girly Right, you gotta find
a way to evolve or die. And that's that's where
he is right now. That's where he is right now,
(01:19:17):
evolve or die. And I think he knows it. You know,
there was a lot of growth there. As much as
people want to say, hey, look you get into Jared
Goff's face and he'll play poorly. Jerikoff made some big
throws down the stretch and they were within a touchdown,
and he had two guys on him and he fumbled
trying to throw a football. It does, in fact happen.
(01:19:40):
I've seen it happen to Tom Brady in the Super
Bowl down five driving against the Eagles, made the wrong read,
held on the football, fumbled it lost the game. Happened
to Tom Brady, most successful quarterback in the history of
the sport. You know, seen It happened to Philip Rivers
twice the year where hold onto a little too long
(01:20:03):
offensive line where you're you're depleted, he doesn't have his
left tackle, got a free rusher. Guy comes after the football.
You lose the ball, you lose the game. But for
Sean McVeigh, who has had the you know what our
way works. If we just execute, we'll figure out what
they're doing to stop us. Okay, your primary option was
running the football. Now you're on a Thursday night. It's
(01:20:25):
too quick a turnaround for todd girl Lee. Your offensive
line isn't moving people out of football. What can you
do to evolve? You know? Which is the same as
with Netflix. How do you take that kind of next step?
Do you continue to try and be the blockbuster that
sends out those DVDs or do you go to streaming
(01:20:45):
and instead of playing all these rights fees which they
still pay, right, they still I mean friends was their
big win, uh your friends in the office of their
big win for last year. But with all that money
they're making, they had to invest in their own programming
because that's where the real money is. Because you don't
have to pay the ridiculous rights. So they paid a
(01:21:07):
hundred million dollars for the right to show people Friends.
Because that hundred million dollars for a year, i'd you
like to be on Friends and walking over to the mailbox.
But like, damn, I'm still getting that big check. Why
hasn't Jennifer and has didn't been anything good? She didn't
have to there's your answer. Why does she look so young?
(01:21:27):
I mean, if you didn't have to do anything except
be beautiful, I don't think that that's that hard to do, right, Like,
you're already beautiful and you don't have to work in
grind and take jobs you don't want to and fly
all over the world make appearances like you can just
go to the mailbox and go Hi, cool. Right, It's
(01:21:47):
like the being a being a cast member of Friends
is like the opposite of being President United States. Remember
like remember George Bush and how he looked before he
before he became got I mean President Obama like jet
black hair, young, very he gets out. It's like Grandpa Obama.
(01:22:09):
It's like just eight years dude, he's got all white hair.
What happened? President of states Man? They're up You're up
at all hours taking phone calls and doing meetings junkets,
shaking hands, kissing babies like man, I mean, think of
the tint of orange. Trump is now as opposed to
what he used to be. Sorry, that was too easy,
That was just oh dude, I'm sorry, I'm not sorry.
(01:22:38):
We are all kind of laughing. Is It was a
very good line. But that's the opposite of being a
cast member of Friends, right, like man, David Swimmer still
looks good, like yeah, he got hit the voiceover from Madagascar.
That's not exactly a troubling troubling job. Just go to
the mailbox pick up money. My point is that Netflix
(01:22:59):
evolved and the truly great Amazon. I think what Amazon
used to be. People used to sell stuff on Amazon.
Amazon used to be eBay. Now Amazon olds owns Whole
Foods and makes their own shows. That Clancy Show is
still really really good. I would I could use another
season of that. That was good, you know. And so
(01:23:22):
for Sean McVeigh, who made a name for himself as
an offensive coordinator, does have a great way with the
media excepts I'll blame all right, takes no credit like
all of that works, and the offensive system still last
week still you know, over forty but now you're a
(01:23:42):
short week. You're running back doesn't want to play tonight.
You're not gonna be crazy productive. Your offensive line isn't great,
You're playing in a really hard place to play. You
don't want to lose two in a row. And people
are starting to go like, you know, does he have
a second gear. Let's see, let's see who's the smart
money on a night? Hawks or Rams? Plus? What about
(01:24:05):

get to r J Belar ticket to Vegas in in
a mere in mirror mirror moments. Uh, I do, I
think this is pretty awesome stuff. Um. In watching Major
League Baseball, it's just so much talent, so much talent,
especially young talent. Uh in the sport I just I
struggle with And maybe it's because we're on the West
coast and I'm not complaining about start times, you know,
(01:24:54):
like I'm a start time guy, but it is hard
two o'clock start time. Here we are in the bottom
the first inning. I don't know, although like look Atlanta,
they moved that. They moved the park out to the
suburbs and that place is filled though they used to
have it at Turner Field and they could never fill
it seemingly in uh during the playoffs. Give you my
(01:25:20):
thoughts on C. C. Sabathia not being on the Yankees roster.
I'm coming to moments, but let's get you ready for
tonight's Thursday night football game by going to Vegas to
give my money? Right? Are you tired of losing money
every week? Do you want to be in the know? Well,
(01:25:40):
we might not know, but Vegas always knows. Freddie Freeman,
Almadina High School. At high school, I grew up being
ball boy form and brother and sister went there single
to left runners at first and third, bottom bottom one.
In Atlanta. R J Bell joins us. He's the founder
(01:26:04):
pregame dot com at r J in Vegas is the
Twitter handle, and most importantly, the show that follows ours
is called Straight out of Vegas. He and Jonas knocks
all the topics, all the lines, everything you need to
know an hour show. He's living the dream. Let's um
let's let's get to tonight's game. What is the number
as of this moment? Uh? Last time I checked, it
(01:26:24):
was one and a half. I can pull up, but
one and a half right now, I just got a
thumbs up. Seattle favorite. Okay, Now, Seattle at home? What
are the numbers in terms of of um uh? What?
What are the what are the numbers in terms of
Seattle at home? And how good they've been over the
last year or two? Okay, Now that's a great distinction
the last year or two, because I would make the
(01:26:46):
case when they were reel and the Sea, the Seahawks
were rolling their high points, they had the best home
field in the NFL. Now, some home fields are driven
by the state m the surface. For example, Lambeau one
of the best home fields. It's about the slickness of
the grass is the key. But with the Saints and
(01:27:09):
the Seahawks, two of the other great home fields, it's
about crowd noise. So when your team's doing really well,
Seattle has even a better home field. When they've done
fine but not quite super Bowl quality, it's dropped off
a little bit long term though, under peak Carroll when
it's been a competitive line below a touchdown, because when
(01:27:32):
you're laying fourteen, as they were at different points, it's
hard to have a big home field when you're up
ten late in the game. But when it was competitive,
Seattle as good home field as you had seen. Now,
as we talk about Doug all the time, Thursday night games,
home teams have a big advantage because of the short week,
So that's even more the case Seattle's great home field
plushed a short week. Except who won last week? Oh
(01:27:57):
listen that that was actually a bigger exception than you
might know, because when they're out of division. Last week
was a home favorite. Out of division, seventy percent of
the time they cover, and there there was about seventy
games in that sample. That is mind blowing. But yes,
it was the exception. Uh well, hey, look we've had
(01:28:20):
some road teams win here on Thursday night Thursday football.
We'll see what about the rams on the road, you know,
girl or uh golf, struggle or I don't think struggles
is the word. There's a clear drop off, more so
I think than most laite quarterbacks. Um. I also think
that the and and I'm sure you've talked about this
(01:28:40):
The girly health issue is so big because in prior
years when golf was playing well under McVeigh, the play
action that really legitimately could freeze the defense was the
key to golf success. Now and and let's be Candida
a very good old line line. Now you've got an
(01:29:01):
O line that some PFF said worse than the league
right now, and I don't know if that's true, but
it's certainly bottom quarter, it seems. So you lose your
running threat and your past catching threat out of the backfield.
Girly is dropped off more as a receiver even as
he has as a runner, and you have a bad
O line. Now the question is the Aaron Rodgers of
(01:29:23):
the world in his prime, the Mannings could could carry
a team. Golf is getting paid like he should carry
a team, but he's not doing it. One last quick thing,
This is a really uh deceiving thing. Rams seem like
they have a complex offense. Complex is bad on Thursday
because again short week. But actually it's a very simple
(01:29:45):
and this is something Greg Cosal shared with us last
year on the show. It's a very simple offense. It
has a lot of variation. That's a decision tree kind
of of the route runners. So rams do have an
advantage that they don't have the game play and as
much because of the simplicity of their offense, no question,
no question about it. All right, who you like? This
(01:30:06):
is one that I would go with Seattle, but I'm
not betting it. It's a lean. And here's why. It's
specifically that the tiebreaker was girly yapping about Thursday, and
I thought that was a huge thing. When he says
I don't want to play Thursday, and you're coming off
the game which you get five carries, You're like, like,
who isn't chomping at the bit to get back out there?
(01:30:27):
Apparently Todd Gurley is the answer exactly, and I think
it's probably. I'm a big believer if you listen closely,
you can understand what's going on in the locker room.
For example, I think the Steelers a game I I
like this weekend, really send a queue out to the
world by trading their first round pick after Big Ben
(01:30:47):
went down. That was we think Rudolph is good and
we think we're gonna have a decent season, and that
number one pick the Miami doesn't mean as much. Well,
I think this is the Rams kind of given us
a massive that maybe they're not gonna be up for
this game. All right? Speaking of Ram Steelers, people don't
know r J is a native of Pittsburgh and this
(01:31:08):
is a huge rivalry game. Uh. The Ravens have Lamar
Jackson's looked very much human, very much like an inexperienced
quarterback who lacks some accuracy the last two weeks after
taking the week league by storm and the Steelers defensive front. Granted,
Cincinnati's line stinks, but they absolutely demolished them on Sunday
night their three and a half point dogs at home
(01:31:28):
to the Steelers. What did the numbers say? Yes, one
of our straight out of Vegas co host is sitting here,
Brad Powers. He discovered this trend. This is a great one.
In the entire series of the Ravens and Steelers, Pittsburgh
at home has never been over a three point underdog.
So three and a half is the biggest ever in
(01:31:49):
this series for Pittsburgh at home plus three and a half,
and it fits right in with twenty five matchups between
Hardball and tom Lin, thirteen times the final decided by
a field goal or less. So I think this is
obviously a close fought series, but I think even more
so what I like about it. I'm ambivalent about Tomlin
(01:32:10):
as a fan of Pittsburgh, but he is unequivocally great
when the team's losing. So the NFL in general during
Tomlin's era, when they enter a game with the losing
records or any given team losing record, they win forty
percent at a time. Over All the league, Tomlins entered
about thirty times with a losing record, has one straight
(01:32:32):
up seventy percent at the time. He's a motivator when
they're going down, and he's good as an underdog twenty
and eight the last twenty eight. So a lot of
things pointing in the direction. Not to mention, the Ravens
defense is so much worse than most people realize. Best
better the week Pittsburgh Clusterina has I like it to uh,
straight up right, Well, you know I would get if
(01:32:56):
you want to play the money line, I think that's fine,
but I'm playing at a plus three and a half
and if you want, if you don't mind, I gotta
really sophisticated. But it's simple to understand parlay you could
do with Pittsburgh gonna here all right Monday night, San
Francisco forty nine ers minus three and a half. This
is with Pittsburgh, San Francisco correct a week off, week
(01:33:20):
off at home. Yep, here's my thinking. The only thing
that starts me from loving San Francisco is the Browns
did look mighty good last week. So what's the thing
that canna suage my concern about that? Well, if the
Baltimore is no good, Well, if Baltimore is no good,
what's gonna happen? Pittsburgh's gonna cover. So if Pittsburgh covers,
(01:33:43):
that makes San Francisco even a better pick because it shows, oh, look,
the Ravens aren't all that good. So this is called
a correlated parlay. If one thing happens, it increases the
chance of the second thing. I like that. Well, Hi,
guys like you done? I like it it generally that's
not actually how math works, but that's okay. What do
(01:34:04):
you mean? Who whoa? Whoa? Whoa whoa? I don't know.
If you know my academic background, dog, you might want
to do a little research. I understand that you're using
like transitive property. There aren't you probably doesn't work in sports.
Maybe people see that he doesn't will see that doesn't
work in sports. No, no, no, no, no. But what
I'm saying, what I'm saying is, wouldn't you say this
is a fun debate? When did you say that if
(01:34:25):
Pittsburgh covers that, by definition, you're gonna probably downgrade the Ravens. Yes,
like yet you're going to. But that's not the way
that that That doesn't change the game and the matchup
at all. That has no no, but no, no, I
agree with that. But that's why the correlation in the
parlay makes sense because you're betting both ahead of time,
(01:34:47):
and if you win both of them, you get a
multippi or effect where like ten gets you twenty eight
or whatever. So you think that will change the line
of the game with the Browns. But that's the beauty,
will it? I'm not sure? I think it might a
little And and and that's an interesting point. You're saying,
why not just wait to see to bet San Francisco.
But the difference here is because it's a two team
(01:35:08):
or you get that par lay payout, got it understood?
Packers Cowboys Cowboys three and a half point favorites. Don't
they usually play poorly at home in big games? Yeah,
but that was a different team. It's it's one of
those things. It's like, if you look a different team,
that's what you all. You Vegas guys, you only use
these like last ten years stats when they work for you.
(01:35:29):
I ask you, and you're like, well, that was a
different team. I don't all different teams. No, no, no.
That's an interesting point and and really one of the
one of the great debates in Vegas amongst the sharps
is when do trends because we all crave sample size. Right,
you give me a trend that's five fifty and four
fifty of a thousand, I am so happy. Right, you
(01:35:50):
give me a twelve and four. I don't know what
to do with it. But the paradox is the more
sample size you have, the less similar those other games are.
But I would say that in general, Dallas is fundamentally
changed from that team that's been eight and eight for
so many years to a team that is maybe one
of the best in the league. Right. But here's the
(01:36:11):
thing on this game, and I'll keep it real simple,
answer this question. You know who you like? Is Dallas
really really good? Are they a top four five team?
And to do that, you have to say, yeah, strength
of schedule wasn't so good, but and and it was
an excusable loss against the Saints. All right, that's one angle.
The other angle is, oh my god, this strength of
(01:36:32):
schedule was so bad, no wonder they won. And the
Saints with Bridgewater ain't no good either, right? How good
is Dallas is really the key to this. The market
right now is back in Green Bay, which tells me
the big batters don't like Dallas as an elite team.
It's kind of fascinating because here the Packers are a
week after getting gouged against a good running game. Granted
(01:36:56):
they had a couple extra days off, but their running
game running defense was terrible. You're telling on the Cowboys
who didn't run the football. Well, the the guess is
they're gonna commit to running the football against uh, you know,
against the Packers. And I would think stylistically that would
help the Cowboys. But three in a hook, I love
the Packers, and three in a hook, you give me
that extra half point, which I think is gonna be
a close game, and I have the better quarterback. Um
(01:37:18):
A lots can depend on Davante Adams and his health.
But if he's healthy, and he's a go I like
the Packers. I actually like the Packers straight up. When
I hear Doug saying three in a hook, I'm thinking
he's getting ready for that college basketball gambling show on
FS one at some point. Awesome stuff. Check out the
show follows ours straight out of Vegas. Go to pregame

to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show
(01:38:02):
weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific. Doug gottlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Mm hmm, I I'm gonna say something there.
Um my son, So he's got a tackle football game
(01:38:24):
on Saturday. Last time to play a tackle football game.
I don't think I reported back. They got beat forty
two nothing, they got stomped and he got trucked because
he didn't get low enough on a tackle and a
little kid lowered the boom and thumped him. And we've
gotten to this place now where like, look, I don't
want my kid getting hurt, no question about it, I don't.
(01:38:45):
I would never want anybody's kid getting concussed whatever, but um,
for the most part, when they're ten years old, when
they're eight years old and nine years old. I was
just watching a highlight of a little kid like lower
in the boom running the football, and actually the kid
who did it in his game, he did drop his
helmet a little bit. In the second half, he did
the same thing to another little kid and just crushed him,
(01:39:05):
and they called up a penalty on him for using
using his helmet. But it's like, look, look the basics
of wrestling, And we had Randy co tour hon Earler
this week. The basics of football, the basics of you know,
post play defense and basketball. Low man wins, right, low
man wins basis of judo. And that's a lesson you
(01:39:27):
learned really really quickly in tackle football, isn't it. And
I get that we're sensitive to C T E and
two concussions or whatever. I would say that when you
see some of these highlights of little kids on TV
running over other little kids, for the most part, they're fine.
Let's not act like it's the end of the world
and we're encouraging some borish behavior. Let's get to the press.

with Major League Baseball. It is one nothing braves over
the Cardinals top of the third inning in their game
(01:40:09):
one of their n LDS matchup at SunTrust Park. They
debuted netting all the way down the foul lines to
the foul poles. So that was just instituted for the series.
There was a report on the broadcast. I get it,
I get it. You're at a playoff game, Like, I
don't know, have you ever caught a baseball at a game? No? No,
(01:40:31):
But there there is a point that I do want
to make, is the the broadcast said that if a
ball like the net could be in play, like it
could hit the net and then bounce fair and that,
and so that's something to unique unique that you I
don't know if it will come into play, but it's
something to look out for in this shut and he
liked netting all the way down. Feels a little much.
(01:40:53):
I understand it. You're better too much with safety than
too little, but that feels like a little bit what
you asked us yesterday where we wanted to sit. I
don't want to pay attention to every single pitch, which
is one of the reasons why I like to sit
behind don't plate behind netting, so I don't have to
worry about it, you know, That's that's one of my things.
But fair enough, But if you'd sit down the baseline
and there is no netting, then I think there's a
(01:41:14):
responsibility to pay attention and not just But I think
once you get past a dugout like that, you got
time there to react, right, Yeah, some extent, but you
can't reach over and get one of those get reach
over and one of those balls of reaching over. I've
always been jealous of the guy who knows how to
time it perfectly. Ball comes down the down the little
(01:41:36):
wall and they just like somebody grabs their ankles and
they reach over the right second and pull up a baseball,
like going fishing. I think that's pretty cool. Hey, Jeter,
play wouldn't be wouldn't happen? Jeter play couldn't happen this
right Jeter? Against the A's. Dodgers announced Clayton Kershaw is
gonna start Game two tomorrow against the Nationals. Why don't
know Hungen is gonna start Game three on the road.
(01:41:56):
I think they wanted to come back for possible later
on in this series. I know why Hunging and Reu
has been the better pictures. I think they don't want
to put too much pressure on re you to have
come back and pitch another A game down the line.
They better have Krisshaw experience. That's what I've seen from
some of the insider and Dodger stuff. I mean, was
only ten and one at home with the under two.
I didn't say I said that. I'm telling you, like,
(01:42:21):
do you think is this Do you think this is
Kershaw's ego? Um? I think it's John's. Do you think
it's protecting Kershaw? I'll answer it with a question of
my own protecting him from put him in the home fans.
You know, it's a good point. I don't know. I
(01:42:41):
just always thought like he threw the better picture. That
was kind of the rule, right, Like who's better, that's
who we should have start more often? And when the
guy is substantially better at home, like what are we
doing here? Then why don't you pitch game one? You know,
it could be your n El Saw Young Award winner.
They could. Uh, Clayton Kershaw at home this year also
(01:43:03):
very good ten and two two point eight nine e
r A. So he's been outstanding at home in in
in fairness, you gave the numbers for Hung jing U,
the numbers for Clayton Kershaw are also very good. Like
everybody from the Dodge has been pretty good. C. C.
Sbathia not on the Yankees roster. James Paxison will start
for the Yankees, but no CC Sabathia for the Yankees
(01:43:24):
at least in this series. How many, honestly, how many
of the Yankees starters? How many Yankees outside of you know, like,
how many pictures do you think people can name? Uh?
Probably not too many. It's crazy, right, Like the turnover
in the Yankees roster is really kind of interesting on
how how it's happened, um fast. It's gonna be fascinating
(01:43:46):
to see how they play. Obviously, you know Laboratores is
just a freak at his age. You know you got
d D back and their their their lineup is remarkable.
But the pictures obviously Servino to knock. Uh and uh
so did you say some in Paxton starts game one? Paxton?
But I think people know Luis Savrino. I don't think
(01:44:08):
people know who James Paxtons. Couldn't pick him out of lineup.
He was sitting right next to me. I wouldn't know
who he was. Finally, charges in coach Anthony lens Is.
Running back Melvin Gordon could start against the Broncos, but
his first game actions and sending his holdouts, that's bad
news for us. We had Austin neck Lar on yesterday.
That would be like the curse of Curse of Gottlieb.
Good for my fancy the press by who wins the
(01:44:31):
night Hawks and rams Hawks point in half? Favorite Dan Buyer,
I'm going with the Seahawks. I want about you there, Ramos,
I'm taking my Rams What about you there, uh Man,
I'll go with the Rams question mark Wow, question mark
question mark Dan, Who's better at quarterback? Seahawks going, Seahawks
(01:44:55):
at home? Seahawks at home,
