Coming up on the Monday Pod. Welcome in, Dak Prescott
and Lamar Jackson are going to split our first ever
version of the Oriyan Fitzpatrick Early Season Extended Training Camp
Superstardom Award. Plus we got Trent Dilfer and Bills linebacker
(00:47):
old Head thirty six years old, former undrafted free agent
out of college. Lorenzo Alexander on what makes this Bill's
Mafia Defense special? Let's get after it Boom America. Doug
Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio coming to you from the
(01:11):
sunniest city of Angels. Doug Gotlip Show rolls on here
on Fox Sports Radio. Brought to you by Discover Card.
We treat you like you, to treat you. Jake Gruden
has been treated to the door. Bill Callahan, who once
upon a time replaced John Gruden in Oakland as head
coach is at the DAIS. My guess is they'll run
(01:35):
the football a ton and if he hasn't already named
Dwayne Haskins the quarterback, he will very very soon and
that will be a disaster in d C. Disaster in
d C. But that's what you do. You only get
the job as the interim if you're going to do
a little bit something different of what you've done, what's
(01:55):
been done, and then do everything that the big boss
wants and the big ball us once they're quarterback to play,
come hell or high water. We're also keeping her eye
on Major League Baseball. The Astros are getting absolutely pummeled,
pummeled in Game three. They're down eight to one and
there's now runners at first and second with two outs
(02:17):
in the top of the fourth innings. The Astros, though
they have the power to come back from seemingly any deficit. Uh,
the Astros after Zak Grinky gets lifted early. Um, look
like this thing is definitely trending towards you know it's
gonna be We're gonna have a fourth game. I don't
know if we have a fifth. Let's talk about yesterday,
(02:38):
shall we before we talk about tonight tonight good Monday
night football game. We also have another baseball game, Nationals
against the Dodgers. We'll discuss that a little bit a
little bit, but you and and there's also Braves, Uh,
Braves Cardinals to day right, that's coming up as well.
I don't really understand the playoff day baseball thing. I
(02:58):
understand there's people's far smarter than me that calculate the
numbers that say this is the better way. And I
have a great job where I can watch Rays and Astros, Cardinals,
uh and Braves, I just Yankees Twins. I just don't
know if those people exist in the real world. I
want to point out that the Cardinals have a great too.
(03:21):
You want to about two thousand nineteen name Dakota Hudson
is starting for the St. Louis Cardinals, Dakota Hudson. Speaking
of Dakota, dak Prescott's full name is Dakota, and I
kind of feel like we've uncovered this year's Ryan Fitzpatrick's
(03:42):
Dakota Fitzpatrick through three games, complete sevent his passes, nine
touchdowns to I n T s three seven yards passing
per game on only thirty one passing attempts last year,
Ryan Fitzpatrick through three games the Tampa Buccaneers complete seventy
passes for twelve touchdowns, two, four interceptions, no fumbles. The
(04:06):
average four yards per game, eleven points, seven yards per tempt.
Lamar Jackson through two games, complete seven touchdowns, non receptions,
three total yards per game, and I believe he won
some people's m v P. A funny thing happened on
(04:26):
the way to New York. To pick up your hardware. Reality,
you gotta play more games against better competition. Remember Dak
Prescott's first three games were in order or in no
particular order. Excuse me, the Giants, I think it's Giants, Redskins,
and Dolphins, all right, And the Giants have turned out
(04:49):
to be decent on offense, but only after they switched quarterbacks.
The Redskins Relly just fired their coach, and the Dolphins
we know. Lamar Jackson's two and oh to start the
year against Arizona. Cardinals have just won their first game,
but their defense and of course the Miami Dolphins were
(05:12):
the other team they faced. Lamar Jackson's last three games
team is one and two. They did win yesterday, although
they're playing against a third string quarterback for the Steelers
needs some helps from terrible penalty calls in order to
get Justin Tucker in field goal range of Senate in overtime,
He's had five touchdowns, six interceptions, only two six total
(05:34):
yards per game. He went from a strength to a
weakness of the Ravens in just the last three weeks.
Dak Prescott two touchdowns, four interceptions in his last two games,
and though he's averaging three three pass yards per game,
it's because thirty nine pass attempts. They got down big early.
(05:54):
He had three interceptions, he got fooled in coverage, and
he tried to do the tebow, which is put out
the fire that he started. A reminder Ryan Fitzpatrick, who
I told you this was coming last year Games four
through nine, he completed his past the six touchdowns, eight inceptions,
eight fumbles, two seven yards per game, eight point seven
(06:14):
yards per attempt. So September is the extended preseason. October
is when reality strikes right. What's the line from Game
of Thrones, Winner is coming right? Winner has arrived in
(06:38):
the form of videotape, better competition, and a true sense
of who's any good that doesn't mean Dax stinks. He's
just not the best quarterback in the NFL and rank
frankly not in the conversation the best quarterback in the NFL.
That doesn't mean Lamar Jackson stinks. That just means, dude,
he's still the same Lamar Jackson inaccurate, especially short and underneath,
(06:58):
and as a dynamic runner, you want him to run
less because of his body type, and he's gonna have
to run more, just like we told you. Ryan Fitzpatrick
is in fact a backup, not a starter. But as
a spot starter he can do well, but ultimately water
finds its level. And so this year's Ryan Fitzpatrick early
(07:20):
very very very very very very early season m v
P Award is a tie. Congratulates to Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson.
You can pick up your hardware, but please don't think
that's a season long award. We get so excited when
(07:42):
football is back. We get so so freaking excited, We
get so jacked up, gets so hyped. We're tired of
Aaron Rodgers, were tired of Tom Brady. We need something new,
we need something for We're tired of being told you
got throw from the pocket. You gotta be accurate, can't
(08:03):
be dynamic. We're tired of these names we've heard for ten,
fifteen twenty years. Do you know what the reason you
heard from for ten twenty years? You know? Look, Dak
Prescott all things can if he never played another game,
(08:23):
has had a great, a surprising and great career. He
was the third quarterback. Tony Romo's team was expected to
be first Super Bowl and they were at least competitive
with him as a rookie. But the true litmus test
is what can you do when things are breaking down?
And if you thought the team was built around Dak
(08:45):
Prescott and not the offensive line, the running game, well,
on the offensive line is banged up and so the
running games non existent. What happened to the Dallas Cowboys?
They look like completely different football team. So the Fitzpatrick
Award is a prestigious award, but it's only a September award.
Welcome to October. Super Bowl Champion Trent Dilford joins the show.
(09:06):
Upcoming next, I'll get his thoughts on Doc, his thoughts
on Lamar, his thoughts on what happened in Kansas City
Chiefs in playoff form that's losing at home by the way.
That's playoff, that's prime playoff form. We got a big
game tonight, Baker versus the Niners and Jimmy g. Tons
(09:26):
of things to get to, plus school updates on Major
League Baseball as it's getting out of hand in Tampa
and they're getting underway in Atlanta. That's next The Doug
Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio WAPT Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
(09:48):
Let's get you to Trent Dilfort, super Bowl Champion, NFL
analyst and all around good guy. He breaks down all
the biggest and the best games. Of course, a reminder
follow lips Gum Academy on social media. He's the head
coach at l A Mustang FB, the only high school
football UH team with a full time nutrition is full
(10:10):
time academic coach, incredible NFL strength coach, best high school
wait over the country, barbershop, three thousand foot square foot
concert venue, and a coaching staff with eighty five years
of college and pro playing and coaching experience and of
course strength overs their head coach. Um. Let's start with
last yesterday in Dallas. Um, what went so wrong for
(10:30):
the Cowboys offense? I think part of it's an offensive story, Doug,
but part of it's a defensive narrative too. Yeah, they
turned the ball over and started rough. The ball bounces
off Um Cooper's shoulder, it gets picked off Um. But
then they start, you know, the same thing happened to
the playoff game, where that inside zone split zone run
(10:53):
scheme just started gashing their defense and the Packers are
will control the ball on the ground, and now you're
playing from the hind and now any mistake you make
offensively gets magnified because you're more in a hole. So
everybody wants to make it about Dak Prescott this morning
and offensive Looes and I would point more to the
same thing that got knocked out of the playoffs last
year against the Rams. And so they can't stop one
(11:14):
run scheme Um that continues to to get after them
and allow the other team to control the ball and
make their offense play from behind. This is an offense
that's designed to run the ball. Is Zeke play action
pass off of it, make make big plays in the
passing game, not one that's designed to come back from
twenty one points. Um, okay, but does it show some
(11:36):
limitations to to deck in your opinion? No, it doesn't.
I mean you look at the three interceptions objectively. The
first one bounces off Cooper, it's gonna be a big play,
em and even says the telic As is probably gonna score.
The one to Gallop, Um Gallup comes too far inside
on a curl route and he's supposed to be coming
back to the quarterback. I think most quarterbacks were throwing
(11:58):
that ball exactly where Dak threw it. And the second
inception you got tricked by covers. That happens everybody. So UM,
I really think it's these these these narratives on Monday mornings,
UM get kind of twisted and become two quarterbacks centric.
I thought Doc did a lot of really good things.
I think he's more explosive now that he's ever been. Uh.
(12:19):
And again, not every interception is created equal. Um. They
all have a story, and uh sometimes you gotta dig
deep to find the story. And I only put one
of those on deck. All right? What about Aaron Rodgers
in that Packers offense you mentioned the running game? People
have said like he's finally got a defense, he's finally
got a running game as well. How does this make
(12:39):
you look at that Packers offense long term? Yeah, he
finally has an offense that isn't doesn't put everything on him.
And I don't care how good you are, whether you're
Tom Brady, John Elway, Dan Marino, Aaron Rodgers, you name it.
When too much is put on the quarterback, it's a
bad thing. You gotta have balance, You've got to have
multiple answers. Aaron's lived in this offensive world for last
(13:01):
five or six years where it comes to the line
of Scrimmagey Double County, Triple County's basically the head coach
on the football field and at some point becomes too much.
This year, he's got more tools to work with. He's
got more formations, more personnel, group means more answers on offense,
a better run game, a better play action game. Uh,
it's gonna be able to control the ball, set a
big plays in the passing game. It fits who they are,
(13:23):
It complements their defense, compliments or special teams. I think
that's what Matt's done. They're more than anything else. As
he's taken some of the burden off air in and
now when it's a two minute situation, it's a four
minute situation. Is a comeback situation. Now the fullness of
Aaron Rodgers can come out. It doesn't have to be
all wasted in you know, twelve minutes left in the
first half. Deal for joining us in the Doug Outlet show,
(13:46):
Long Sky, longtime NFL analyst of course, Super Bowl champion,
head coach of lips Can Academy, following them on Twitter
at l a mustang f b um, Let's get to
the chiefs um. The Mike Lombardi adage is, uh, if
you want to have a good uh is it you
want to have a good defense, don't play that much defense, right,
try to play less defense, which means keep the other team,
(14:09):
you know, keep the other team on the defensive. They
ran the football kind of felt a little bit similar
to what gritten the idea of what Green Bay was
trying to Green Bay accomplished playing keep away from an offense?
Is that what we saw last night in Kansas City?
I think so to certain of Grammy, You've got to
be scared of Kansas City. I mean, you're crazy if
you're not scared of Kansas City. I don't care how
(14:29):
good you are tomorrow who they play, don't politics gonna
be scared of Kansas City to a certain degree. So
you got to play. You got to play a formula
to limit the amount amount of impactful, dynamic plays they
can have. And that's by controlling the rock um high
volume of runs which you saw in Annapolis, do really
(14:50):
high conversion rate on especially on your makeuple third downs,
you probably have to steal a possession by going for
on forked down or faking a kick. I mean, it's
all hands on deck to keep um him off, to
keep Mahomes off the field, and keep that offense off
the field. Not helps the Mahomes has banged up a
little bit. That ankle does not look good. He's still fantastic,
(15:12):
but it is. Uh, it is a different beast when
you go to play that team. And they weren't at
full speed last night either, so they had the opportunity
to get them without all their guns. Doug gotlic show
you're on Fox Sport Trader that that's Trent Dilford. Trent
Jay Gruden's fired today. Do you think anyone there's anyone
(15:32):
that can succeed there? Uh, that's a great question, and
it's the right question, and I think the answers No. Um.
I think Jay is a really good football coach. I
thought that a really good staff too. Um. It's really
hard to win when your organization is not putting football first.
And what's first right now in that organization is politics.
(15:53):
It's a stadium renovation or a new stadium. It's DC politics.
It's football is not the fast ball right now. You
don't know who's making the personnel decisions in the front office.
It's a it's a collective um decision making process, which
doesn't work. Democracies don't work in the NFL. Dictatorships do. Um.
(16:14):
So I think it's really difficult for any head coach
to come in there unless he comes in there and
gets full power. The Parcelian model, you know what I mean.
I think that's the model that would work going into
d C. I don't know if it will ever happen,
but it's okay. Let me handle football. You and Bruce Dan,
You and Bruce go handle all the politics and do
(16:34):
all your stuff that you guys think you need to
do to get a new stadium. Let me handle football.
If you get a guy that can come in with
that kind of juice that can do it that way,
and then I think he got a chance. But you
don't have a chance when the NFL is about player
acquisition and player development and you're not. You're failing on
one side of it, which is the player acquisition side
of it. Let me ask you about the Minnesota Vikings.
(16:57):
Obviously there was some uh, some interesting words said on
all sides about the Vikings offense last week. It looked
great yesterday against the Giants. How much of that was
opening up the playbook? How much of it was there
playing against the Giants. I think this is well playing
against the Giants part of it, and not very good defense.
(17:17):
So you're always really good to point those things out,
and I agree with you. I mean, I've learned over
our years of talking and sometimes you have to look
at the opponent and not get too caught up in
one week's success. So I think that is definitely part
of it. However, I think you point back to those
words that were said, and and this is where I'm
different than a lot of people. I think those I
(17:37):
think that conflict is good. I think there's healthy conflict
in the NFL that brings up stuff that makes you
confront some of the issues that you may have and
with feeling saying those things, and some of the pushback
by the organization and some of that drama actually I
think created a healthy balance of conflict that led to
a more diverse offense. And I think where I saw
(17:59):
the diversity and I went back this morning and and
watched a little closer was I think they're starting to
understand who Kirk Cousins is. He's a He's a better
run action split the field and half quarterback than he
is a drop back quarterback. What they do. They moved
the pocket a little bit, They did the half roll
on old Peyton Manning half role play action stuff, took
(18:19):
some shots, They got the ball in the perimeter in
the screen game to the runners, Um, they still ran
the ball well. Um, it looked like an offense that
was sustainable. It didn't look like a stubborn offense. And
sometimes you can be stubborn running the ball, and sometimes
you can be stubborn just dropping back and throwing the
ball too much. I thought it was not a stubborn offense.
(18:41):
It was diverse. It's that who Kirk Cousins is It
who the skill guys are and I think it's a
model they can move forward with Doug Gotlib Show here
on Fox Sports Radio. That's the voice of Trent Dilvert,
super Bowl champion of course, head coach at at at
Lipskim Academy. What do we make a Lamar Jackson. I
know they won yesterday, but you're playing against the third
(19:02):
string quarterback in Pittsburgh needed a big penalty to get
them a field goal range. Um at one point in time,
I'm just I'm wondering. Now we now we have even uh,
we have even more five games to call on. What
what's your take on Lamar? Bad penalty too? It was
a bad call um, kind of like we've said a year.
I mean, I think that he is a dynamic football
(19:25):
player that has to play his game, and his game
is going to be a down hill run game with
the r P O threat with him as a runner
and then defined what I call isolation looked from the
passing game, and those come off of action um action pass,
the threat of him running, the threat of Ingram running,
the threat of you know, some kind of diverse college
(19:47):
looking offensive play can created the fine look in the
secondary when he drops back and has to dissect a
defense and play the full field. Like many young quarterbacks,
he's just not ready for it. Um. And then you
add that he's not overly consistent as a drop back thrower.
He's more of a split the field in half isolated
(20:09):
defender either or passer, and when he's got an either
or option, he tends to rip the ball. He's more accurate. Uh,
he can pierce it all over the field. When it's
all of a sudden, he's tying his feet to his
eyes and he's trying to go okay one to two
to three, Um, his his level of accuracy drops a lot,
and he makes a lot of poor decisions. And then
the pocket starts to overwhelm him a little bit and
(20:30):
he drops his eyes and he tries to run. Now again,
there's ten other guys that are like that in the NFL,
and you can have success. But I just had this
conversation about Marcus Mariota last night. UM, he's very similar.
It's they need to you need to call plays and
need to build a playbook around what that guy does
well and not try to get out over your skis
(20:53):
and do something that that guy can't do well. It's
hard for NFL guys. I know, you know, look, Greg
Romans a guy, he's dealt with that before with Colin Kaepernick.
But it's hard for NFL guys because they want to
make a guy in the mindset is well, we got
to keep allowing him to evolve into being NFL quarterback.
And I think what you're saying is no, no no, no,
what he does can be effective, candy goodenough. You just
(21:13):
have to be the best version of that, right, yes,
And and when people say that, I think you gotta
go back and you gotta you gotta be somewhat of historian.
And I've challenged coaches to do this before. Go back
and study Bill Walsh when it was with Steve Young, okay,
and Mike Holmgren is with Steve Young, and then Brett
Farve with Mike Homegren, and then Matt Hasselback with Mike Homegrown.
(21:35):
I was there. There's a lot of things those players
couldn't do early in their career. So what those coaches
did was they did what they could do well. And
he turned two of them in the Hall of Famers
and one of them into a multiple Pro bowler. Um
and you do what they do well for for a
long time and spoon feedom the other stuff and as
(21:57):
their confidence grows and what they do well and you
still win games doing that well, then you start introducing
new stuff. And as you introduce new stuff, let's call
it the drop back game, full field reads, whatever it is,
you only do it when they're showing a lot of
success with it in practice. And and I think North
turner to the same same thing with Troy Aikman, And
(22:18):
you can go on and on and on that just
because the guy ended as a Hall of Famer didn't
mean he started there. And there's genius to the coaches
to understand who they have as a quarterback, what their
strengths are, and then calling the majority of the plays
in the game that suit that skill set for that quarterback,
then trusting over time you can give him more. And
(22:39):
I think that's the mistake that's happening right now in
the NFL is you're expecting these young guys to come
in and be able to do with Tom Brady does
and you just can't do that. Do what the guy
does well as long as you possibly can, and start
introducing the other more graduate level stuff to him over time. Yeah,
and Tom Brady didn't do what Tom Brady does early
on in his career. Right Monday Night football, we got
(23:01):
Baker and of course you've been you've given great analysis,
and Baker against Jimmy g you've given great analysis. People
think that Jimmy g is is Tom Brady. He's not.
Um right, he's not. He takes a lot more risks.
He's a computer gun slinger. Yeah, this is a gun
slinger game. And the guy that's least gun slinger ish,
(23:22):
I think the guy is gonna win it. And this
is such, this is like where curmudgeon analysis comes in.
It literally is going to come down to the guy
that makes the least amount of mistakes. They'll both naturally
make plays, both offenses will naturally get going. But the
guy that doesn't make the big mistake, the guy that
uses discretion in a critical time when yeah, he probably
(23:43):
could fit it in there, he could probably layered over
that you know, middle defender, but stead he checks it down.
You know, the guy does that the most night runs,
his offense, lets his playmakers make make plays, don't try
to be the superstar on Monday Night. You know that's
probably going to be the the gun slinger that wins
this game, the gun that plays least gun slinger ish
(24:04):
if that's even a term that that that is now,
I mean, do you popularize it, it becomes it becomes
I mean, think of the multipacks. Honestly, honestly, my son
threw a touchdown pass. He's like, dad was at a
dime and I was like, sure, sure, but like dimes
was a basketball specific reference until you popularized it. Um,
(24:27):
you talked about throwing from different platforms. I'd never heard
that on TV, and now it's what what I don't
even know the sentence you just you just said, but
it'll soon become part of popular culture it real quick,
and we have time. We have the dime things funny
because I started launching that. Obviously I'm a huge hoops guy.
We've talked about it was totally a basketball term. I
started using it in the Seattle quarterback room in the
(24:50):
early two thousand's and everybody makes fun of me. Brock Heward,
Matt Hasselback, and then Alex Smith used to make fun
of me for calling dimes. And then my first producer,
he has pensadal That's never gonna stick. And I crack
up every single weekend when I'm listening to high school
college NFL games and everything. Dime Dime Dime dime should
(25:11):
have should have trademarked to dude. I mean, think Danny
Dimes in New York. That's gonna be his nickname from
here in the perpetuity until he starts becoming Danny dink
and dunk um. But but but you you that that's
just missed opportunity. That's that's a guy that could have
gotten in on Google, you know, twenty years ago. That's
that's that's the Dimes reference that you had, Trent. Great
(25:32):
great stuff. Thanks for catching up with look forward to
talking to you next week. J Gruen has been relieved
of his duties. Is like the least surprising firing of
all time, Like no one's Like I think a lot
of people think that already happened, right, Like didn't happen
last week? Like, no, it did, in fact happen. Plus
they were there was some weird Brady chance. They were
chanting Brady's name, weren't they in d C yesterday? They're
(25:53):
Brady Brady. This is Bruce Allen earlier today on the
stage to the team. After the firing of J. Gruden
last year at this time. We're in first place and
we're and we're doing well, so it was working pretty
damn good. Unfortunately, our quarterback got injured. The pieces are
here for a winning team. We have to put him
(26:14):
in the right place, believe in each other, and keep
fighting for a goal. There's only one way you win.
You have to work, and you have to get better,
and you have to beat your opponent. And that's what
we have to do. And I believe these players and
these coaches will do the m hmm. Yeah. So basically
he's saying we're good enough, are coaching wasn't good enough? Right? That?
That's did you guys hear that? What I heard? I
(26:36):
heard that as well. He did point out that they
were in first place they lost their quarterback. Also accurate, right,
also super accurate. Here's John Middlecoff Friday, Hey, John Middlecoff
three Now Podcast Heard Podcast Network. Former NFL scout had
this to say about why the Redskins are so bad.
Bruce Allen doesn't know what he's doing, clearly, and no
(26:58):
one overcomes Damn Snyder over the last twenty years, No nobody.
It's it's the same thing. It just happens every so
sometimes it happens in two years. Sometimes it's it's actually
pretty remarkable that Jay has been there six years. But
this gets back to in the history that franchise, and
I think most NFL owners, especially the last probably ten years,
are pretty good at this. Like I know in my
(27:19):
experience in Philadelphia, Jeffrey Lury is not counting the table
for guys. That's not not what he does at all.
He paid people a lot of money to make those decisions.
When you have your owner telling you who should draft.
When's the last time Doug an owner lost out in
the draft room, I'd say it's probably zero percent. It's
never happened, right, Yeah, owners own, they called owners own.
The Washington Redskins defense is allowing thirty points per game,
(27:42):
thirtieth in total defense allows bonus to convert on third downs.
That's thirty one in The NFL has thirty two teams.
By the way, um, remember that they have, you know,
fifty million in Josh Dorman twenty three point seven and
Ryan carragaan Landing Collins were point five million. That's over
(28:03):
a hundighteen million and guarantees for the life of their contracts.
And it should be pointing out like Norman and Landing
Collins that came from other teams are free agents, and
free agents you usually overpay for and you're usually let
down by. And these three players account for nearly the
total salary among the Redskins defense, and the Redskins defense
is in fact bad. I don't know the level of
(28:27):
culpability with Jake Gruden. You know, I don't know if
he said, I get me John Josh Norman. I know
I want Josh Norman. I don't know if he said
get me Landing Collins. I went Landing Collins. But I
find I find it really hard to believe that when
the president of the team, Bruce Allen, stands up and
says we got good enough players right here, that usually
(28:50):
means those are the players that he acquired right there.
So if these are his players, I or j Gruden
and his staff as the worst coach ever, or maybe
the players aren't as good as the the president who
put the team together thinks they are. Makes sense. I
(29:11):
think so. The Chiefs lost in a home yesterday, Big deal,
little deal, or no deal. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio.
Every day this time of the Doug Gotlieb Show here
(29:32):
on Fox Sports Radio, we we get you caught up
on the big stories of the day, things you might
have missed, but we do so by playing a game.
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show, coming
to outers every Monday, all season long to play Monday
Night Moneyball. You're just a few easy questions away from
(29:54):
a chance to cash, to get cash prices, freebees, and
it tripped to the season ender. In my amy, a
new chance to win every week and Hooters girls cheer
on every game. Play Monday Night Moneyball at Hooters Moneyball
dot Com. Damn by what he got, Doug. The game
today is big deal, little deal, no deal? All right,
(30:16):
big deal, little deal or no deal. That the Indianapolis
Colts may have exposed a way to beat the Kansas
City Chiefs. Big deal, big deal and that um, I
think it's a big deal because look, first, the Chiefs
weren't healthy. I get that, um, And we knew that
you have to, you know, keep Pat Mahomes off the field.
(30:37):
You know, fewer possessions gives you a greater chance of
beating any great quarterback. Um. But I also think that
like look they were in Kansas City, they just couldn't stop.
Takes the crowd out of the game. It energized your
offensive line. Listen to the a f c FO when
they may face in the playoffs and the Colts. But
I mean this is also how the New England Patriots
(30:58):
are built, right to run the football. All that said,
this is a big deal. Yeah, I agree with that.
You could see the Patriots doing the same thing if
they if they meet again, or the Patriots could just
be the Patriots. Speaking of the Patriots, they beat the
Redskins yesterday. The Redskins, of course making the news. As
you talked about a little bit earlier. Jay Gruden fired today.
(31:18):
Big deal, little deal or no deal, Doug the new
Redskins interimed coach Bill Callahan's is that rookie quarterback Dayne
Haskins is not a candidate to start right now? That's
a big deal. That's a really big deal. When the
guy who comes in and wants to keep the job says, hey,
your first round pick is not a candidate. He didn't
(31:38):
say nothing starting back. He said he's not a candidate,
which means he's third on the depth chart. He's like, damn,
how bad does this guy stink? Now? He did also
say we need to get him comfortable with a couple
of packages so that we can you know, he gets
confidence so we can get get to that place for
you get him in the game. But man, that these
are not good returns on the Dwayne Haskins draft pick, which,
(32:00):
by the way, I kind of told you about. It's
one of those deals where we saw him last year
of the high state till fifty touchdown passes. But due
to Ohio State, they have better players than everybody else.
They have guys running wide open. It is not a
pro offnce think about how long it took Alex Smith,
who is the number one overall pick, becoming a good
quarterback in the NFL. He comes from that same system.
(32:23):
This past weekend, actually the last two weekends from Salaman
myself have had uh an interesting discussion on how the
Redskins have handled their quarterbacking situation. What I thought was interesting,
Doug was the j Gruden riffed with him in the
front office, and their coaching staff was so apparent with
how they handled Haskins these last two weeks by putting
them in in a in a almost a no win
(32:46):
situation against the Giants, if you will, without the lack
of preparation, and then yesterday in a game whether it's
a complete blowout to the New England Patriots, where maybe
that's an opportunity for Haskins to get some snaps that
I'm put him in it all the times are terrible defensively,
I think that was the thinking there, right, Yeah, but
when you don't get any of the snaps in practice
(33:07):
that week and all of a sudden you're throwing him, Hey,
why don't you go in and take over? It's it was, Yeah,
the the rift was there, and I felt like Jake
Gruden was basically given the front office the finger in
the last two weeks. A big deal, a little deal
or no deal. That Raven safety Earl Thomas is not
likely to be suspended for his hit on Steelers quarterback
Mason Rudolph. The knocked Rudolph out of the game. I
(33:27):
feel like that's a big deal. I know he was
penalized during the game and he'll probably be fined, but
I mean, it wasn't like Mason Rudolph was bending over.
He was actually jumping up like you had to try. Now,
some of it was just because he jumped up. It
became helmet to helmet. But where's your targeter if you're
hitting a guy in the helmet he jumps up, I
(33:49):
have no idea. Yeah, maybe how low can you go?
I I mean? And it was, it was. That was
a scary one. That was a scary one. Did you
see Juice Smith Schuster? Yeah? I thought Juju thought he
was dead. Yeah, I think he did too. And and
in fairness, like Juice, miss Schuster was also on the
Steelers when Ryan Shay's here lay motionless, so umm, he's
(34:13):
probably thinking like I've seen it all now. And Mason Rudolph,
by the way, is at the team's facility today, so
he was released from the hospital last night, was back home,
did show up at the team's facility, but obviously still
in concussion protocol. Big deal, little deal, of no deal, Doug.
That the NFL is now offering a contest for you,
well maybe not specifically you, but you are someone out
(34:34):
there could play their Turkey Bowl at lambeau Field on
Thanksgiving Day. That is pretty awesome. That's an awesome That
is pretty awesome. That auction enough. It's a it's a
contest as part of the one you Know year anniversary.
A winner will get to go along with ten of
their friends and family, Brett Farves being a part of it.
But you'd be able to play your Turkey Bowl at
(34:55):
lambeau Field. That's pretty incredible. That's an awesome deal. Uh.
Another interesting deal, this one in the NBA Big Deal,
Little deal or no deal that NBA Commissioner Adam Silver
had to go out of his way to say the
defended Darryl Morey's right to free speech following the backlash
from the Rockets GM tweet to support Chinese protesters. A
big deal, little deal or no deal that Adam Silver was,
(35:18):
I guess, going out of his way to try to
send their message. Ah, this whole thing is a big deal.
I mean it is a political minefield, right and Daryl
Morey stepped into it. Who knew they followed Darryl Morey
on Twitter? That's that's that's what I want to know.
Who the Chinese regime was like Daryl Morey dead dead
to us, dead to us, no rockets of all the
(35:43):
rockets to can concern yourself with that kind of area
of the world. I think the Houston Rockets are the
least concerning big deal, little deal or no deal. Come on,
that's funny that the Washington Nationals have gone I don't
know willy nilly to how they use their picture in
the NLDS. This is this is pulling out all the stops.
(36:04):
I guess if you wanted to use another phrase or well,
just up, here's Patrick Corbyn. Oh, there's Patrick corbyan, here's
Max Scherzer. There's Max Scherzer. This is uh yeah, they're
doing the all hands on deck thing a little bit earlier. Yeah,
you know, to me, it says, we believe in three
pictures on our team and we're gonna try to use
them as much as possible. Where instead of, you know,
(36:26):
the A team trying to get all of the advantageous matchups,
the Nationals are just trying to maximize their three guys.
It's not a big deal, little deal or no deal,
I mean hasn't worked for Patrick. I feel like it's
a big I feel like it's a really big deal
because of how they're constructed, right, You're they're constructed like
old school style. We have these big time pictures. Let's
(36:46):
let and they're going with this kind of new philosophy
with with with pictures that have been in the in
the bigs for a substantial amount of time. I feel
like it's a big deal. I thought it was unique
and I thought it works with Scherzer. But then all
of a sudden you're like, oh, so this is the
plan now last night when Corbyn goes in and the
rest is history work. No, it did not big deal,
(37:08):
a little deal or no deal. That the Angels are
interviewing Joe Madden today for their manager real Bacons, that's
a big deal. And the only thing is that that
position is not occupied, and Joe bad usually likes positions
that are occupied. Kidding. That's by Rick Rendre a joke
of the day. Um, he used to work in the organization.
He's just the type of energy that they need. I
think this is a simple higher to be made. This
(37:33):
is game time on the Duck Godlime Show. All right,
we got a lot to get to Brock. Here's gonna
join us next hour. Lorenzo Alexander from the Bills, Who've
got another hard fought win. Man that defense is Nasty's
a linebacker for the Bills. He joins us in the
third hour of the show, so will Joel Klatt was
I three and two in both college and pro again?
Is that correct? Three and two in NFL, two and
(37:57):
three in college. My college struggles continue. Oklahoma State five turnovers,
I mean they lost by ten, they were favored by ten.
I feel like they would have won. If you know,
you don't turn it all or five times, it's impossible.
There were some surprises. We'll get to those with Joe Klatt.
Michigan State didn't cover. That was another one of mine.
I thought they'd cover. Um they did not. Michigan one
(38:17):
and Michigan cover. But man, that was an ugly, ugly,
hard fought win. But you'll take it. Um. Aaron Rodgers
was kind of sort of maybe a little bit of
a game manager. I'm sorry, i gotta speak up game
manager yesterday and I'm gonna be that guy. No, not
(38:44):
the one that says he's not good enough. He's great.
But Aaron Rodgers as a game manager is a good thing.
I'll explain up coming next in the Doug Gotlip Show.

What Up Doug Gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio, Do Do
Do Do Do Do Do Do? Got a lot to
get to today on the Dug got Leave Show and
Fox Sports Radio. It's brought to you by a Discover Card.
We treat you like you'd treat you. So the Green
(39:25):
Bay Packers, as predicted by this guy, go into Dallas
and get a win over the Cowboys. Mm hmmm, Um,
there's a lot here to get to. There's a lot
to bite off. I don't know if you saw this,
but the Packers lead the league. This is great, lead
the league in percentage of dropbacks where the quarterback is
(39:48):
sacked under duress or a hit. Now, it should be
pointed out that the Cowboys were depleted at their offensive line,
especially at left tackle. They haven't had Tyren Smith. They
haven't been the same team. But the Packer through five
games lead the league in quarterback pressures without a blitz. Remember,
over the off season they signed the Darius Smith. He's uh,
(40:10):
he came from Baltimore, like Mike Petton. Hard of that
Baltimore kind of posse right brings over za Darius Smith.
They signed Preston Smith from Washington, so they got the
brothers Smith, who of course collapsed that pocket multiple times.
Adrian Amos they signed from Chicago. He had a pick
versus the Bears in Week one. He leads the team
(40:32):
in tackles, and they drafted Darnell Savage, who's got one reception,
one force fumble, and his second on the team in tackles.
They've remade this team one that pressures the passer, one
that pressures the pastor, and one that pressures the passer
without blitzing. They're younger, they're more athletic. They also have
(40:57):
committed to running the football. Part of that Kyle Shanahan
scheme and you saw it yesterday in UM in Dallas,
You'll see it tonight in San Francisco. Is that zone
blocking run scheme that we saw for Denver for all
those years. It's the new look on Mike Shanahan's vaunted offense.
(41:21):
And it's the reason that they don't value running backs
that much is because kind of anybody, if you learn
how to push it and then hit the whole and
have one cut, lots of people can do it. It's
built more around the offensive line. The agility of the
offensive line, and you need a quarterback who can also move.
And well, you ever, we always think that quarterbacks that move,
(41:44):
our quarterbacks that are back there and they're scramming around,
like Lamar Jackson can really move, Steve Young can really move.
Like I got a phone call yesterday from Ryan Music
or I don't know if I called. Did I call you?
You called? I think I called you. You did call me? Okay,
So I called Ryan Music yesterday and we started somehow
we got into a discussion about Damn Marino. He's like, hey,
I'm not really old enough to know, like, why didn't
Dan Marino win more? Was it his defense? Like? Yeah?
(42:06):
Was his running? And I was like, yeah, um, the
division was much more difficult. Remember this was during an
era in which the Bills went to back to back
to back to back Super Bowls. But he had a
Hall of Fame quarterback in Buffalo. The Jets during various
times in his career were pretty good. They didn't have
a defense, it didn't have a running game, but some
of the running game was caused by the fact that
(42:26):
Dan Marino had to be in the shotgun because though
he had great feet around the pocket and a quick release,
he couldn't get back to hand the football off or
wasn't comfortable in play action the way that Joe Montana was,
for example. So one of the reasons that Daniel Jones
was somebody that a lot of NFL people who run
(42:48):
those West Coast top offenses like, as you need a
quarterback that can move, Dwayne Haskins can't move bad feet.
We we ratio, we we stereo type dudes due to race.
And it's pretty funny. Dwayne Haskins is a black quarterback,
is not really a very good athlete. Daniel Jones is
(43:10):
a white quarterback and is an exceptional athlete. Kind of
just shows the stereotypes don't really fit. Um. But when
I look at Aaron Jones ruying the football, when I
see these numbers of the Packers and the ability to
get after the passer, I start to realize that yesterday.
(43:33):
Don't get me wrong, Aaron Rodgers still had a couple
of Aaron Rodgers throws. But he's managing the game. He's
not making it all about Aaron. Sure, financially with the
contract he got, it's all about Aaron, And in the
TV commercials, it's all about Aaron but in their four
wins this year, two one yard for game, four touchdowns,
(43:55):
no interception, completion presenting six point nine yards per attempt,
which would be tied for on the three in the NFL.
That one loss they had to the Eagles, where he
had to carry the team, he did four and twenty
two yards, two touchdown, did have a pick that was
a deflected ball their last offensive play, six completion presents
and seven point nine yards per attempt. He still has
(44:15):
his fastball, he just doesn't have to throw it as much.
And what you want to call him a game manager,
or say that Aaron Rodgers is not throwing anymore, he's pitching,
whatever you want to do. My son's ten years old.
He's left handed, he's got a good arm, and he
got the pitch yesterday. And one of the things that
(44:37):
his coach in travel baseball, and I'm totally committed to,
is we're gonna make him into a pitcher, not a thrower.
Throwers and there's plenty of them, and they just come
in and they just try and throw gas, and they
learned to locate and throw gas. And he's got a
good arm. He's got pretty Yesterday the glove was popping
like man. He was, He sounded good and he was
(44:59):
loc But you want to get him to the point
where he can throw a breaking ball early into account
As a lefty, can you throw a breaking ball without
fearing that it's going to run in and hit a
right handed batter, which is what he's doing. He's learning
to become a picture not just a thrower, and Aaron
Rodgers is learning to become a picture not just a thrower.
(45:23):
He's probably always had this in him, but now he
doesn't really need to throw. Every once in a while.
You're gonna come to a net bat where you just
gotta throw some gas by a dude, just rear back
and throw gas every once in a while. We're gonna
need Aaron Rodgers gonna be needed to just bail him out.
That's what happened against against the Phonel of Eagles. Here's
(45:46):
Trenton Dill for former NFL quarterback, Super Bowl champion earlier
in the show. He finally has an offense that isn't
doesn't put everything on him. And I don't care how
good you are, whether you're Tom Brady, John Elway, Dan Marino,
Aaron Rodgers, you name it. When too much is put
on the quarterback. It's a bad thing. You've gotta have balance,
you've got to have multiple answers. Aaron has lived in
(46:07):
this offensive world for last five or six years, where
it comes to the line of scrimmagey, double county, triple counts.
He's basically the head coach on the football field, and
at some point becomes too much. This year, he's got
more tools to work with. He's got more formations, more
personnel groupings, more answers on offense, a better run game,
a better play action game. Uh, it's gonna be able
to control the ball, set a big plays in the
(46:28):
passing game. It fits who they are, It complements their defense,
compliments or special teams. I think that's what Matt's done.
They're more than anything else is He's taken some of
the burden offer taking some of the burden off. Again.
Here's the youth pitching analogy. Just throw strikes, put it
in play, let the defense make place right. That's really
(46:50):
what it comes down to. It's the it's the it's
the guy who can go by his man in basketball
every time doesn't mean you need to. Let'll be people
play with the ball, shot clocks, running down. We need
a bucket, We'll still come to you. So I think
it's fascinating that Aaron Rodgers kind of manage the game yesterday,
made a couple of great throws, hand the ball off
(47:12):
out Aaron Jones and in the flat, got him under
where they're supposed to get in new didn't turn the
football over. And I really let the Cowboys spit up
all over themselves. Why Because he's gotten the league defense
that when you get a big lead the way they
got a twenty one and nothing lead, they can pin
their ears back and just pressure the passer. I mean,
(47:33):
I watched the Lakers play their first preseason game against
the Golden State Warris. They opened up the new Chase
Center in San Francisco, and they I mean, and I
granted Andy Davis is being guarded by no one. I
get that we want to buy into the Golden State
Warriors and we'll preview the NBA. But I'm not sure
people understand without Clay, who's their best defender as well
(47:55):
as their third best score from last year without Clay,
Like there's no defensive shot without Andrea Goodala's not the team.
Like they lose a lot on defense. A lot and
and the fear for the Warriors is are they just
gonna ride staffed where it wears him out, not just
(48:16):
this year in the playoffs, but in the next year.
Just like for the Lakers, there's Anthony Davis was spectacular.
But I think a good portion of why Lebron is
going to allow him to be the focal point of
the offense and the regular season is he knows he
can't do it every game or even half the games anymore.
Doesn't have to just facilitate, make shots, score game, win
(48:41):
a bunch of games, and then the playoffs, we may
need you to win us a series. Same with Aaron Rodgers.
When you have a pre established relationship as being one
of the best in the sport in the history of
the sport, I think you actually can. I think you
actually can dial it back a little bit and save
(49:01):
it for the playoffs. Alright. Former quarterback in college football
analist brock Huard joins the show. Upcoming next is is
he worried about Dak Prescott getting exposed the past two
weeks plus. I'm gonna ask about college football this weekend
(49:22):
as we got a big one, the Red River rivalry
on Fox. That's up coming next, be sure to catch
the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at
three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio Whap. Doug Gotlip Show rolls
on Fox Sports Radio. Brock You're playing the NFL. He's
(49:42):
an analysts covers college football for Fox Sports, following on
Twitter at brock Hewart also has the Brock and Salt
uh podcast town. He's got a pod away from the
day of the radio show, which means you've got plenty
of energy, uh to to bring it with us for
just one segment. I me wanhen you go from three
hours of morning radio to just one segment. I mean
that's at that's a that's an absolute layup. Um. All right,
(50:05):
let's let's start. Let's start with dak Um. I haven't
sold my deck stock, but I wasn't all in on
my deck investment, right, so I'm not terribly surprised. I
think he's dealing with one injuries the offensive line too.
I love Kellen Moore, the idea of Kellen Moore, but
he isn't experienced, right. And then look the defense got
(50:26):
the defense got mauled by by the Green Bay Packers.
So I'm reasonable with it's not all his fault, but
doesn't this show some of his limitations? Well, I think
on both accounts, Dug, on all those accounts, I think
you're very accurate. I would say, any first time play caller,
any first time radio host, any first time game broadcaster,
(50:48):
is going to climb a learning curve. And I think
that really shows situationally, and I think that showed up
last night. First three games inferior opponent, um, you know,
just fun playing the game on of just you know,
nothing to lose, letting it fly. There weren't tremendous like
pressurized games, situations that you really had to win. And
I think the last two weeks you've seen that heightened,
(51:10):
and I think you've seen some of the inexperience of
both play caller and DAC in those moments. You know,
the third downs, especially that you know when you play
good teams. You know, Pete Carroll, after sitting now with
him for ten years on Monday du following games, you
know that money down is an awfully big down in
high school football and college football, but it's everything in
the NFL, and that money down is third down, And
(51:31):
to me that's where you start to really judge these guys,
like if I'm if if I want that stock and
I'm gonna pay a hundred thirty million for it, that
is the down, that is the distance. Those are the
moments in the big games against quality opponents. I really
need to see you show up. And I think that
is still in some ways to be determined for Dach.
What about what about Aaron Um playing fantasy? You'd think
(51:53):
he didn't play great? How did he play? From a
former NFL quarterback current analyst perspective, Well, it's four and
one and he's not having to do everything. So I
think Mr rogers Uh on his playground is having some
having some fun and saying this is this is why
we made the change to hopefully be more balanced as
a football team. I think that change was necessary for
all parties. I think for quarterback, for head coach, for organization,
(52:16):
and I think you're seeing a quarterback playing a little
bit of freedom because the burden of responsibility is not
all on him. That you can hand it off so
you can run the ball on third down, then you
can have a backscore butt your touchdowns. And I think
this is showing, you know, just some added maturity to him.
I think it's going to help his body and legs.
Remember how beat up he has been over the course
of the last few years. Later in the season, back injury,
(52:38):
calf injury, just shoulder injury, just just beat up. Yeah,
collarbone broken, collarbone. He's just he's been nicked up over
the course of a long season. You want to protect
that investment. The best way to do it through September
and October. Run the ball and off a lot and
make sure he's got a full tank of gas when
it really matters, what do you make of every boy?
NW Jake Gruen was gonna get fired, Bell Callahan gets
the job. And he said earlier today that Dwayne Haskins
(53:01):
is not a candidate to be the starting quarterback. Now
a candid Now, look, you know, Irvin Meyer said he
wasn't ready. Jake Gruden said he wasn't read. He didn't
look ready when he played. They do have Colte McCoy,
they do have case Keenum. Uh, they do have other options.
But to say he's not a candidate, how alarming should
that be to the Washing Redskins. That's just bizarre world
(53:21):
out there, man. You know some of the stories that
I have heard my good friend Jim's used to coach there,
and some of the some of the stories things that
Jim would never share publicly, um, you know, because he's
not gonna air any of that out. But I mean,
it's just an absolute fiasco in that place. And right,
I mean, all the speculation was Jay Gruden and this
coaching staff did not want to draft Dwayne Haskins, did
not want to play him. That that was the owner
(53:43):
that he meddled from the top down. He forced their
hand a little bit. So now after you fire the coach,
well maybe now the owners saying, hey, you know what,
let's let's change that narrative a little bit. Let's let's
make sure everybody doesn't think it's me meddling here, and
let's try to rectify the situation. So so maybe I
can convince somebody to come here and take this job
of quality. Just just a fiasco, just an absolute mess.
(54:04):
And d see as it's been largely for the last
decade plus, we haven't touched since the Seahawks game on
Thursday night, the throw that Russell made in the corner
to Tyler Lockett. Everybody's talking about Tyler's catch It was
a great catch, But to be rolling to your left
and to drop it in the bucket in the one
place on Earth where Tyler lock it can catch it, it
(54:25):
it doesn't get deflected it it's still a touchdown. Um. Look,
Russell has done some amazing things and really grown into
being an elite level quarterback. How good was that throw
from a guy who's made throws like that before. Yeah,
I mean there's just very few on this planet right
now that walk that can make that, make that thing happen.
The home's unhealthy ankles can Aaron Rodgers is fully capable
(54:48):
of doing that, And then I think the list may
end right there. Dog. I mean, he is just he's unique.
The sound Watson's a great athlete. He didn't have that
kind of arm strength to be running to his left,
to being chased down to just barely getting his legs
underneath him and throwing a seed thirty five yards in
the air, and he had to have about a six
inch target to hit right on that right time, right
on the right spot. I mean, it was improbable, to
(55:09):
say the least. I think the guy is the next
gen stats. In fact, we're able to rate that from
a percentage standpoint is the most improbable throw and catch
of the season. And I'd be curious going how far
back you'd have to go to dig into those numbers
and see a more improbable throw and catch, just because
of the space. Anytime you're you know, you're running to
the boundary as he is. It's much like you know
(55:30):
on a basketball court, you're just losing space. You're losing
the opportunity to make that basket, to make that throw,
to turn your body to get the ball up in
the air. I mean, it was just it was stupid, right.
I mean, you know I've said this before, like I
played the position. I appreciate you introducing me as a
former NFL quarterback, but some of these throws that these
guys are making today, the Mahomes, the Watson's and Russell
(55:50):
Wilson's arm Rodgers. I mean, it was stuff that yeah,
maybe Far maybe maybe Far could have done it twenty
years ago. But this position and these throws are getting
taken to a level kind of like Steph Curry and
shooting due. I'm sure you watch these shooters today and
you're like, dude, I used to be a good shooter, right,
I could shoot thirty or whatever you did from the
three point line in your day, and now it's just
(56:11):
ridiculous at the efficiency in the effortlessness with which these
guys are throwing and shooting. It's it's a great point
you make. But and thank you for pumping up my
my three point percentage by a good but brock Heward,
that's why I love him. We bring them on to
Doug Gotlieb Show here on Fox Sports Trade. Let's let's
get to the let's get to the college game. Um,
where did you had the Cow game? Didn't you? Was that?
(56:33):
Was that? I'm trying to Yeah, you had you had
you had the Cow game? Nothing makes sense in the
PAC twelve. I guess right, that's the That's that's my
kind of takeaway. Is that? What's what's your takeaway? Yeah?
I think that's fair. Other than a couple of things. Uh,
Oregon was a couple of plays away from right now
being five and oh and probably ranked six or seventh
in the country. They lose all the receivers in game,
(56:55):
one couple of them before the game began in camp,
and then a couple of them during the game, and
unfortunately they stepped off the gas, which you should not
have done. You can talking tomorrow. Chrystal ball. Last week,
they should have continued to be aggressive, and if they were,
I think they would show that they're the best team
in this conference. They've got four seniors up front, They're
loaded with seniors in their front seven. Their secondary is
(57:16):
the fastest in the conference. Like, there's a lot of pieces,
and their guy, Justin Herbert, I think it's an NFL quality,
if not first round quality quarterback. So I think that's
that's a given. Outside of that, Utah's front Steven is filthy,
but their online is terrible and they don't have much
depths And yeah, that's kind of where the conversation on
a national competitive level starts and ends unfortunately right now
(57:38):
in the pack twelve. Yeah. Um, and that Cow game
was actually closer. Big interception on deflection laid the games
a seven point game and cal is marching down the
down the field. I thought, I thought cal did a
did a great job in terms of preparation their defense.
You mentioned Herbert, you said might be a first round pick.
There were some at the end of last year that
thought he could come. He was coming back to be
(57:59):
the number one overall. Hick. What's missing? What what doesn't
he have? What hasn't he shown as of yet? Well,
he checks every box he's evaluators one. I should probably
eliminate mine. He's going to be a first round pick
because these NFL guys can't help themselves. When you're six six,
two seven pounds, you're well built, you're good athlete, You're
gonna run probably four six five at the combine. You
(58:19):
look beautiful. You know. You watch him throw the ball,
comes out with a ton of ease, Doug. So he's
gonna be a first round pick. I should eliminate the mic.
It's gonna be whether or not someone says, yes, I'm
gonna build my franchise around this guy. And I'll go
back to where we started this conversation with back, and
that is for Herbert in these big moments, in on
third downs, in the red zone, in these big games
(58:40):
down the stretch. Here. You know, they're gonna play on
the road at Washington, They're gonna play on the road
at USC, They're gonna play on the road at a
s U. There's gonna be some moments that he's got
a rise to the occasion that didn't happen last year,
that didn't happen at Washington State, that didn't happen in Arizona,
that didn't happen in one of the ugliest Bowl games
you're ever gonna watch. Don't watch it again. So you
need to see him. I need to see him. I
(59:00):
think these NFL franchises need to see him in the
big moments. Just play as big as his stature and
his arm is. And if he does that, someone in
the same in the NFL is gonna say that's the
guy I want to build my program around. All right,
we we have this problem in in the NFL, and
this problem is usually a college problem, whereas you can't
tell how good somebody is because of the quality of
(59:23):
competition they're playing. I think Oklahoma is pretty good. Obviously,
Jalen Hurts has been putting up ridiculous numbers. They were
just okay against Kansas on Saturday, but you know, between
and I know, Tech beat Oklahoma State, but text not
very good. They hadn't they played the bottom of the league,
and their non conference schedule hasn't been especially challenging. They're
(59:44):
taking on Texas, who did struggle a little bit to
eventually put away West Virginia on the road, but you know,
Texas is outside of getting beaten by L s U
at home, Uh, they looked like they looked like a
very much improved Texas squad. Can Texas low down jailer hurts?
I don't think they're gonna slow him down. The question
will be whether or not Oklahoma can slow Texas down? Right.
(01:00:06):
L s U really could not do that. I mean
that that was that was a race to the finish
line and who was going to have the ball last
in that game. And I think that's probably what we're
gonna see the Cotton Bowl come Saturday. And and it
really is whether or not Oklahoma can play any level
of defense? Right? Can can they be? They're better than
they've been in the past. I don't. I don't have
any question about that. I'll I'll put you know my
(01:00:28):
name to that. I'll forecast out ahead. They are better
than they've been the last few seasons on that type,
on that side of the ball. Kenneth Murray, their middle
linebacker isn't is this stud and he's gonna play in
this on Sundays for a long time in the NFL.
I think Alex Grinch has their scheme and their system
fitting their personnel. They're undersized, woefully undersized on the back
end of their defense. I don't think that will necessarily
(01:00:50):
show up in major major ways in the Big twelve Conference,
but it will when they match up with the big boys,
the Alabama's, the Clemson's, the Georgia's, those teams. So I
think this will be a a sprint to fifty quite
possibly on Saturday in the Cotton Bowl. And if Oklahoma
can limit Texas to thirty, then all of a sudden,
you're going to see them, I think. Continue to legitimize
(01:01:10):
at the top of the polls. Who you got this? Sweet?
What's your game? I am back in Eugene for the
Colorado Buffalo's in Eugene Friday night on FBS one, So
we need to be at home on Saturday. How about that? Yeah?
I get to sit and watch a whole bunch of
college football Includn't that uh that kick off in Dallas
come come Saturday morning, which will be fun. Um? Okay,
(01:01:32):
So do you Eugene? Do you go Eugene to see
how you don't drive that thing? Do you? You know what?
I drove it this last week and I brought my
daughter with me. How cool was this. You mentioned your
son to me, I think the last time we were
on So my daughter is an aspiring hooper. She's a junior.
So we drove. We made a bunch of stops along
the way. We went and watched Oregon State practice their girls.
Their girls team is awesome, the Pac twelve girls basketball. Like,
(01:01:57):
if they want to figure out how to get boys
basketball and in their football right, go look at what
the what the women are doing. Because Stanford, Oregon, Oregon
State are filthy. I think they're all national title contenders.
And that's the one sport out west that's absolutely getting
it right. Next time you go to corrals, tell me
I'm my brother to show you around and you can
give you to give you the whole tour in the meantime.
So how long is the drive? It's about corbous, about
(01:02:20):
four and a half. You dream another half hour, so
but there's not much, you know, not many times I
get with my sixteen year old daughter away from the
phones for four and a half five hours, So it
was an absolute glass Okay, so you did no folks,
she had no phone access to you do know how
to be on her phone the whole time? Well, we
were we were probably talking for a good two hours
and then she played a bunch of music. So but yeah,
(01:02:41):
it was Hey, let's let's catch up and do something
you know, we hardly ever get to do anymore, which
is really have that kind of quality time. That's awesome,
that's awesome. All right, I got left handed quarterback for
your work with next time you're in l A. Thanks
for joining us, you bet, Doug looking forward to Doug

We treat you like you treat you. Um, I hate
(01:03:28):
to say, you know what, I don't hate to say.
I told you so everybody always goes I hate to
say I told you so. No, I don't. I don't
hate to say I told you so. I love to
say I told you so. I love to say I'm right,
you're wrong. All of you, all of yous, all of
us made fun of John Gruden and his lack of
(01:03:52):
pass rush last year. What is he doing? Why is
he even away of Mary Cooper? Why is he traded
away Ghalil Mack? Right? Well, the Raiders are three and two.
Keep in mind, the Raiders are in the midst of
the most ridiculous road swing in the history of the
(01:04:14):
National Football It in the history did I stutter the
history of the National Football League? I want you to
think about this. Okay. They opened this road swing at
Minnesota to take on the Vikings. Okay. Now, keep in
(01:04:36):
mind they started the year though, They started the year
at home on the Monday night against the Broncos, and
the Broncos just won the first game. That's a rivalry game.
They took on the Chiefs in Week two at home.
Who is the best team in the a f C
last season in the regular season and along with the Patriots,
the co favorite to reach the Super Bowl this year.
(01:04:57):
So they hit the road. They take on the Vikings,
they take on the Colts. They go to London, which
counts as a home game, but I'm not sure how
much you guys are aware London and Oakland or London
in Vegas, that's not a home game. They come home,
they have a week off, then they go to Green
(01:05:18):
Baby take on the Packers, then to Houston take on
the Texans. So technically literally four road games and a
neutral side game. Technically five straight road games and all
five our playoff teams. Vikings didn't make the playoffs last year,
(01:05:41):
but everybody thinks they should be a playoff team. Colts
though they lost Andrew Luck, they're a boardline playoff team,
and we're a playoff team last year. Bears won their
division last year. Packers. I believe they have the favorites
down the NFC Texans who won their division last year,
and our favorite to win their division again this year.
(01:06:01):
It's the most it's the end, and they've won two
in a row. Granted they got stopped by the Vikings.
I don't know how good they are. How are they
doing it well? I mean, look, the other part of
the plan that's interesting is they wanted to go with culture.
Guys want to go through the draft. They added Trent Brown.
Everbody said they overpaid for Trent Bound and guess what
he's done a really really good job, really good job.
(01:06:26):
But the questions you had were, man, why are they
bringing in Antonio Brown? He's gone? Why are they bringing
in Vantes Perfect? He's gone? How are they gonna make
Derek Carr into a better quarterback? Two point five two
seconds from snap to throw fourth quickest in the NFL,
second lowest in average of intended yards bottom five, and
(01:06:49):
pass attempts into tight coverage twenty three in yards per attempt.
In other words, hey, man, where you're gonna do captain checkdown?
You'd be super safe. Only throat to guys who are open,
and if not, let's get onto the next play. Handed
off to Josh Jacobs, who we draft in the first
round and is a first round running back. Play to
(01:07:13):
our defense, which is vastly improved. Does it mean they're
gonna win the a f C West. No, the Charges
will get healthy and they'll wake up. The Chiefs are
just flat out better, and this schedule is going to
beat them down, even with the bye week that they
have this week, but in the ten year plan in
year two to be three and two and two of
(01:07:34):
those wins at the front end of the most ridiculous
five games schedule five games stretch in the history of
the NFL. I challenge anybody to find a team that
was in last place last year that has this schedule
this year. Actually, I'm not sure they were in last
Pleasing that Broncos may have. It doesnt matter. I mean
not not every year you go from worst to first,
(01:07:56):
especially when the Chiefs are in your division, and I
mean think about a hard and for the Chargers. But
the plan is working. They're getting better, they're more competitive.
They figured out how to best utilize Derek Carr for
the time being. Does that mean he's long term the answer?
The answer, we haven't figured that out yet, but they
(01:08:20):
know if they keep him up right, they run the football,
they get rid of it quickly. Gives them a chance.
Like John Gordon's a good football guy, and these are
a football guide type of things. He's been sitting there
in the booth and thinking like, man, if I ever
get on the shot, I want my guy, Like, what
what's the what's the secret to Tom Brady's success? He
gets rid of the ball so damn quick. Right, he
(01:08:43):
gets rid of it so quick. They build a really
good offensive line and keep putting money in that offensive line.
He gets rid of it quick. They run it to
keep you off balance, off pressure, and they don't turn
the football over. I hate to say I told you
show No, I don't. I love to say I told
you so. I love it. I told you. Jon Gruen's
(01:09:06):
not an idiot. He was bothering out. He was drafting
for their future. He's helping getting more players under club control.
And they'll be fine. And the play to go to Vegas,
which I've said for five years, is a home run.
I don't know if you've seen this, but almost all
their seats are sold, all their suites are sold. All right,
A lot to get to. Kyler Murray got his first win.
(01:09:26):
Are we impressed? Be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific. Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Tradio every
day at this time, every single day, well unless we
have an interview or some runs longer. We try and
get you caught up on one of the stories of
to day, something that we heard on Fox Sports Tradio
(01:09:48):
or Fox Sports One when we call it the Fox say,
coming to Hooters every Monday like tonight, all season long
to play Monday Night Moneyball. Just a few easy questions
away from a chance to end cash prices, freebees, and
a trip to the season enter in Miami, a new
chance to end every week at who and Hooters girls
(01:10:10):
to cheer on every game. Play money Night, money Board, Hooters,
moneyball dot Com. This was a Shannon Sharp talking about
Kyler Murray's first NFL in I'll give him credit. Winning
a role game, as Mike mentioned, is never easy, especially
as a rookie quarterback. Going on the road to win
is the most difficult thing to do in the NFL.
Going on to on the road to win as a
(01:10:32):
rookie is even more difficult. But as Mike mentioned, it
is the Bengals skip. You and I used to talk
about it for the past three years. Everybody fire Marvin,
fire Marvin. I see you, guys, you don't remember what
the Bengals were like before they got Marvin. Now, I
bet you there's a bunch of people wishing they had Marvin,
because now look at them skilled lifeless. I think the
(01:10:52):
biggest caveat in all of this skip Kyla Murray played unbelievable.
I thought he was more as certivate his throws but skilled.
Thirty eight Russia attempt for who hundred and sixty six yards?
That will make a quarterback job a lot easier on
the road. Who was the leading rusher he was tam
got David Johnson got set. You can win with that formula,
(01:11:17):
Now you can't. Bengals are terrible. The Bengals are are
are terrible. Remember last year they had until Week fourteen,
they had the worst defense in the history of the NFL. Right,
they still don't have a j Green. They're They're terrible.
I would also point out that a complete misconception is
(01:11:38):
that it's hard to win on the road. It's a
total misconception. Sit Warren Sharp told us earlier this year
that's not as as difficult, and it's playing out as
such a right like Patriots Bills combined six and oh
on on the road, Baltimore two and one on the road,
(01:12:02):
Cleveland two and oh on the road. Um, indeed two
and one on the road just beat one in Kansasy
supposed to knee is supposed be toughest place to play.
They always lose it on the playoffs, and now they
lose it over the regular season. And let's not act
like since they is the twelve man in Seattle. But
this whole idea road teams have a better record than
(01:12:24):
the home teams this year. Sorry, these are just stats.
It is true. And one, you know, there's a couple
of reasons. One because there's teams, you know, like Cincinnati
who just stink since they're not a good football team.
They've scored eighty points, they've given up a hundred and
thirty six. They're not the worst football team. That's the
(01:12:47):
Miami Dolphins, who's who's scored twenty six and giving up
a hundred sixty three. Yeah, they are setting a whole
new definition of stink, completely new. But this whole well,
the hardest thing you're do in the NFL is win. Now,
the hardest thing you can do is win against good
(01:13:09):
teams when they homer away, when they've seen you a bunch.
And then if you're playing without one of your best
weapons on offense or your offensive lineman against one of
the better teams that has a good scheme, and now
it gets really difficult. Now gets really difficult. That's what
the Fox said. Four nights. Brown's Knights should be interesting,
(01:13:32):
Like Jimmy g they haven't. There's it's really hard to tell.
On the Niners. They haven't played anybody. They played two
road games, but again, who have they played in their
two road games? We're gonna we're the only ones who
are fair in this thing. The Niners have had a
week off. This is If the Niners don't win tonight,
something's wrong. They beat the Bucks on the road and
(01:13:53):
Jamis was terrible. They beat the Bengals on the roadeen,
we told you what we think about the Buccaneers, and
they beat the Steelers um at home. But the Steelers,
I believe, in that game, had Mason rudolph As as
their quarterback. Right, they didn't have Ben Roethisburger. So yeah,
I think everybody thinks San Francisco should be good, but
(01:14:15):
they've yet to prove to us they're good. This is
a big proven game, and for the Browns, because they
won last week, it gave them a bit of a reprieve.
They're back. The back end of their schedule is really soft.
It's not that I want them to be two and three,
or they should want to be two and three. But
keep in mind, after this game, they get Seattle at home,
(01:14:36):
get a bye, go to New England. Okay, those are
all difficult. Then at Denver, Buffalo, Buffalo, Pittsburgh, Miami, Cincinnati,
and Baltimore all at home. Coming up, they still have
to go to Cincinnati, go to Arizona. They got two
of the worst teams in the NFL. A matter of fact,
three of the four worst teams in the NFL they
(01:14:57):
still have on the schedule and they play Cincinnati twice,
so the plenty wins to be had for the Browns.
Feels like really really important statement game from the Niners
as to where they are in their expected growth and
the idea they can win the division this year. And
for the Browns, hey last week they showed that if
they run the football they can be really effective. Will
(01:15:19):
they will they get away from that playing against the
San Francisco for the Niners. Other updates of the day,
the Tampa Rays just took it to the Houston Astros.
They win ten to three, so now the Astros lead
two games to one, still just need one win in
order to advance to the a LCS. And the Atlanta
(01:15:41):
Braves trail three one in the top of the fifth
inning with a runner at third base and only one out.
So the Braves need to need to find a way
to put one in play. Here, Adam Devolop, find a
way to put one in play if they can play
to run, and we'll have a one run game. And
they were waiting on Yankee Is Twins and we're waiting
on Dodgers Nationals. All will take place at some point
(01:16:05):
this afternoon early evening before the start of the NFL game.
You know, a lot a lot of people talking about
the Bills, and I know they lost to the Patriots,
but they made Tom Brady look old. They just beat
the Tennessee Titans, and they're about as good at defense
you're gonna find the NFL. Lorenzo Alexander will join the show.
(01:16:27):
Up coming next Bill's Mafias four and one. Do they
feel like they should be five and out? We'll discuss
next in the Doug Gotlip Show. Fox Sports Radio. Fox

s R to listen live. What up Tug Gottlieb Show,
(01:16:49):
Fox Sports Radio. Mm hmmmmmm. I had a great weekend
US boards. Did you do you guys have a good
weekend when when you get baseball and you get college
football and you get NFL football and you get some upsets,
(01:17:10):
usually don't We usually feel like we reserve the upsets
for the college game. But I do think that the
Colts beeding the they were letand point dogs, but the
Colts beating the Chiefs felt like a like a college
type of upset right like it was really surprising, and
they kicked their ass. They kicked their ass. And I
(01:17:31):
know Mahomes he got he wasn't totally healthy. Then he
got his footstepped on. But that's not the reason that
they couldn't stop the Colts running game. And the Colts
got after him. You know, obviously some that they couldn't
run the football, so they became one dimensional. They pressured
the passer. Let's do the cold do the Chiefs have injuries, absolutely,
(01:17:55):
but they got beat yesterday. They got They just got beat. Um.
We told you heading into the season that the talk
of the a f C East was not about the
Patriots the Jets. How bad the Dolphins were but about
the Buffalo Bills and specifically their defense, and you know,
(01:18:16):
you look up and you're like, wow, they beat the Jets,
to beat the Giants, they beat the Bengals. We've told
every talked about earlier's day how bad the Bengals are.
They lose to the Patriots at home. They beat the
Titans holding the seven points, Like, all right, fine, but
those are all non playoff teams. You go back and
look and you know, if if not for their quarterback
(01:18:37):
getting knocked out of the game, Josh Allen, you feel
like they have a shot. They beat the Patriots. This
team is dynamic defensively, and Lorenzo Alexander a big reason
why he joins us in the Doug Gottlips Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Lorenzo, how are you? How you doing?
Good man? When you I know you guys are together,
(01:18:58):
you know all offseasonever um. It feels like this defense
is special. It is one of the elite groups of
the NFL from the outside, what's it feel like on
the inside? Um, you know, we're just thinking it one
day at a time, you know, one game. We understand
how how vital he is to do that because each week,
I mean, you can get you know, easily give up
(01:19:20):
some yards if you don't if you don't approach it
that way. So we have a deep group, We got
guys that can rotate in UM and so we've just been, um,
you know, hitting guys with numbers, you know, whether it
from the D line or the back end, and been
playing some pretty good football thus far in the season.
What what is the outside of the depth? What is
the secret schematically to what you guys were able to
do and and really take advantage of your guy's strength. Um,
(01:19:43):
I don't think we do anything that's you know secret.
You know. Obviously coach Sean McDermot came from Carolina, he
bought his scheme over from from that team that went
to the Super Bowl, and we've implemented that over the
last you know, three years now. So I think a
lot of it has to do a continuity obviously bringing
in some um, some talent over those years and now
just guys are just really to understand the culture of
(01:20:04):
what we like to do defensively, so UM and guys
out there doing that one elevens execute their job and
making plays when they have opportunities. Yeah, I mean and
and he you know, obviously cut his teeth under the
late great Jim Johnson in Philadelphia. There's some kind of
exotic types of looks up front. You've you look, you've
been here a couple of years. You've been under Sean
(01:20:24):
since he since he got here. Um, and the offense
has kind of been a work in progress. But it
feels like Josh Allen becoming more of a runner has
has really kind of changed simplifying things for him. Does
that help you, guys that that he's he they've made
it simple for him in year two? Um, of course,
I mean, obviously Josh is growing and is going to
(01:20:44):
concue to get better and as as time developed. But
I would say the biggest thing that's helped out, you
know Josh is is really the addition of Frank Gore
on what he's been able to do in the backfield,
and he's really been coming to live. You know, they're
closed up the game for us yesterday. It really takes
some pressure off of Josh so he doesn't feel like
he has to win you know, the game with every
(01:21:05):
throw that he makes. What about you personally, I mean,
I don't know how many people are aware of your
story Lorenz Alexander joining us in Buffalo Bills. Like, dude,
you're an old head now thirty six years old. But
but it's not just to make it in the league
as an undrafted free agent, but to make it in
the league is a two time Pro bowler for over
(01:21:26):
a decade? How does that happen? How have you done this? Um?
I mean a lot of would have to do with
the guys as far as my teammates and coach that
I've been um blessed to have around me to really
help me, because you know, I've played multiple positions where
there's defensive line, offensive line, linebacker now and and so
those things, Um, I can contribute. You just to have
(01:21:48):
a great coaching and then obviously meet this, you know,
being a student of the game and things that I've
learned from people, and it's continue to get better. Where
you go? Where are you going home? Where? Where's where?
Where you I hear the knap system? Yeah, Yeah, we're
actually I'm going Um, I'm actually with one of my teammates,
Kurt Coleman. We're going to show a shoulder night um
(01:22:09):
Kingdom and rising uh showing a local church with our
pastor and just going out and kind of fellowship together.
That's great. You do have you do have the week off? Right?
You got you got the week OFFNA gonna take a
trip where you're going. I'm going to be going out
to Arizona. Uh you know, we got a home out there,
so I'll be out there. All were kind of hanging out. Um.
(01:22:30):
I do have to ask you, you spent a couple
of years with the Redskins. When year on the practice
squad right when y're you've we've heard all these stories
about Washington. Give me your best Washington Redskins. It's a
dysfunctional play story. I mean, there's a ton of stories
out there, you know, But I'm not I'm not gonna
(01:22:52):
continue to poll on when the the franchise is down.
So let them be there. They'll figure out hopefully eventually.
But you know, when I was there, I had a
lot of great teammates and coaches that had a chance
to play with. And so I'll leave it at that.
All right, Uh, fair enough? Have you are you? I'm
not sure if you're a Twitter guy. Have you seen
this Twitter war between most of your defense and Tyler
(01:23:13):
uh and uh and Taylor the one from the from
the Tennessee Titans. Uh yeah, yeah, I checked that out today.
I mean, it's it's funny to be obviously we were
able to go in there and be a good team.
I mean, they're a good team, and then uh, he
comes and comes that one. Our teammates and guys are
just standing up with their own and so it's funny.
I don't think it's too much to it, but you know,
(01:23:35):
I think I don't think he thought guys were gonna
respond the way they did. You and uh, you and
Frank Gore talking tell tell all World War two stories?
Is that? I mean, you guys are kind of kind
of been around a while. I mean, I'm I'm older
than both of you, but it's pretty much what is
it forget TV twelve method? What is your method? What
is his method? You guys trade secrets on how you
make it in your mid thirties. I mean the biggest
(01:23:56):
thing is consistency. I mean, uh, take care of your body.
I mean it's not berry, it's not a complicated, uh
formula to come up with. I mean you take care
of yourself, take care of your body, take care of
your teammates and and and and the people around you. Um,
you can find a way to stick around the league
and obviously being productive, which we've both been able to
still do you know in our me at dirties. Pretty
(01:24:17):
impressive stuff. Well, listen, enjoy the night of fellowship. Congrats
on the outstanding start you earned your week off. We'll
see in a week against the Dolphins. Thanks so much
for joining us. I appreciate you so. Lorendo Lorenzo Alexander
were the great stories and great men in the National
Football League. Undrafted free agent out of cow This is
years ago, right, two thousand five, I think two thousand five,
(01:24:40):
that's fourteen years ago. He spent two seasons one of
practice squad with the Ravens, won the practice squad with
the Redskins before making it with the Skins for years,
been around, been part of the Raiders, Cardinals, couple other squads.
Really really amazing stuff. Doug Gotli show brought to you
by Discover card We treat you like you'd treat you.
(01:25:02):
The other thing that's interesting about the Bills they they've
played two at home, three on the road, but if
you watch how they play, they're set up now they're
back end of their schedule is really tough. Really tough.
But they got three coming up in a row at home,
one against the Dolphins than Eagles. I forget who the
third one is against, but Redskins, right, So two of
(01:25:26):
those you feel like those are dubs and that would
put them at what uh two more six? You got
at six wins? They still gotta go to the Dolphins,
Broncos at home, Jets at home, like they're gonna get
to nine or ten wins. And they're actually built to
play in to play in the cold weather, like they're
(01:25:47):
built to play in Buffalo. One of the reasons they
wanted Josh Allen. They know Josh Allen is is is inaccurate,
but he's so big, so strong that his ball can
cut through the wind, cut through the wind. And their
defense is nasty. They can run the football. Joel Clad
joins the show up coming next? Uh, Michigan's defense seemed
(01:26:11):
to show us something. But what's wrong with their offense?
What have we learned about Ohio State and their win
over Michigan State, Oklahoma and Texas can either stop the
other and um, I guess Auburn isn't the best team
in the SEC. We try to make heads or tails
(01:26:31):
of a wild Saturday and get you ready for a
huge Saturday in Dallas that's up coming next on The
Doug Gotlip Show. Be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio. Whap Doug Gottlieb Show. You're on Fox Sports Radio.
(01:26:54):
Joel Class lead college football analysts for Fox Sports. He'll
be calling the Red River rivalry this weekend. That's oh
you versus Texas Horns who survived Morgantown right um and
the Sooners who beat Kansas. Although you know it was
a little bit closer than anyone really wanted it for Oklahoma,
(01:27:16):
But leading up to that type of game, some of
it is to be expected. Joel, Do we learned Do
we learn a weakness of either team in either of
those matchups? No? I don't think uh learned anything new.
I think that maybe some of the same things that
we would um analyze as being a question mark for
(01:27:36):
each team popped up and and one of those things
for Texas was their ability to defend the path. They've
been just decimated by injuries in the secondary. They've got
three starters out in the secondary, and they're not very
good strong defending the past in the country given up
over three yards per game. That that's certainly going to
(01:27:57):
be an issue when you're gonna face an Oklahoma team
that has been the best offense in the country over
the last three years. And then for Oh You, I
think it just continues to be the fact that we
don't really know what their defense is now. I will
say this defensively for Oh You, they have shown some
signs third down dug they're much better than what they
were a year ago. They were a hundred and eighteenth
(01:28:19):
a year ago, their fifth in the country this year,
so they can get off the field. And then the
past defense in which they were dead last a year
ago in college football there at least thirty seven now,
so drastic improvement on that end. But they have not
been tested all that well, and this is certainly going
to be their biggest tests when they go against what
I would consider one of the top five or six
(01:28:39):
players in all the college football and Sam Ellinger, Yeah
some sam Ellinger is absolutely terrific. Um, I guess the
question is can either stop the other? Oh I don't.
I don't think so. I don't think so. I'm fully
expecting that we get both teams into the forties. Last year,
I think it was something like forty forty five. I
(01:29:00):
wouldn't be shocked at all if we get another matchup
for forty five, forty two or something along those lines.
A couple of years ago, Texas had a really strong
defense and they were able to hold Oklahoma under thirty
points against Baker Baker Mayfield. But I don't see either
team having a defense that's going to be able to
do that against the other. Texas is too good offensively.
Their offensive line has been consistent all year long. All
(01:29:23):
five guys have started all five games. They can run
it pretty well. Ellinger, I've already talked about and I
just don't see I think o US defensive improvement it's
going to be enough against them. And on the flip
side of things, when you've got as poor a past
defense as Texas and you're going up against Lincoln Riley
in Oklahoma, they're going to put up points in yards.
So I certainly think this will be a high scoring affair.
(01:29:43):
All right, What now with the SEC With Auburn falling
to Florida, I was impressed with Florida's defense, they were
really good. Um from my seat, Florida's defense is one
of the better ones in the country. Now their their
schedule can continue used to be very difficult. I don't
quite see them even with that great defense beating l
(01:30:05):
s U. They're still gonna have to face Georgia. This
conference is really good at the top. It's very good
at the top. Auburn, you could say, was maybe overrated
from the get go, because let's face it, we don't
really know what Texas A and M is and I
don't really know what Oregon is who is in kind
of an interesting game with Cal over the weekend. Um, So,
Auburn was maybe elevated onto a pedestal that they shouldn't
(01:30:27):
have been and and Florida knocked them off at home.
I don't know if Florida is gonna be able to
travel that well, in particular with Trash at quarterback. But
the SEC in general is very strong. They've got two
or three teams in each division that that I would
categorize as as top twelve thirteen caliber teams in the country. Uh.
Doug Gotli show on Fox Sports Trade that's Joel Klatt.
(01:30:49):
Course he spent a ton of time covering the Big Ten,
which you see the Big newon game on Fox. Um,
what we learned about Michigan's defense or about Michigan's kind
of tough with their ability to to beat Iowa, well, okay,
so Michigan to me is still a bit of an enigma. Now,
(01:31:09):
they played as good a game as they played a
long time defensively. Um, when you go back to their
if you go back Doug and you look at like
just a section at times, starting with last year's Ohio
State game, they were giving up a lot of points
and a lot of yards to basically anybody that they played.
And so from my seat outside of Rutgers, of course
you throw that one out. From my seat, this was
(01:31:29):
the best game that they have played since before the
Ohio State came up last year. On the defensive side,
the problem is that offensively they're still pretty anemic. I
don't believe that Josh Gaddis, their coordinator, has found the
niches a play caller. He called one pass play that
went down the field and it was successful to Nico Collins,
and he never came back to it. I just kept
(01:31:52):
and I kept saying it on the broadcast. Everything was
inside breaking routes, curl routes, drag routes, so on and
so forth in the safeties. For I, well, we're just
sitting there. They had a great game, Gino Stone being
one of them, Kerner being the other. They had an
unbelievable game because nothing was presented to them to go backwards.
They were just able to sit and run forwards, run downhill,
(01:32:14):
and be kind of authorities in the run game during
the course of that that game. So Michigan to me
is is still await and see if they take that
offense to Happy Valley in a couple of weeks and
play Penn State on the road in a white out game.
That game is gonna be at night. I don't see
there's any way that Michigan beats Penn State the way
that Penn State has looked so far. Okay, um, where
(01:32:35):
do we put Wisconsin in that group? They have Michigan State,
who's you know, Michigan State can't really score. They're a
little beaten up here, right. They get Michigan State at home,
they go to Illinois, then the Ohio State game, which
I'm sure you'll be there October six. But where do
we put Wisconsin as of now. I really like Wisconsin, Okay,
So for me, Michigan is a great barometer. Okay, so
(01:33:00):
bear with me, Doug. Like Michigan is a great down puncher,
they're a terrible up puncher. Okay. When you get when
you get more talented than them or any player that
can expose them, they get beat badly. And when when
you get on the field near Iowa and you can't
exploit them athletically, they punched down really well. They're kind
of bullies in that regard their schoolyard bully and a
(01:33:22):
bully that gets matched by another bully tends to, you know,
shrivel into the corner. So Wisconsin for me, there there's
certainly above Michigan. And I think that even from an
above standpoint, they're above Michigan State because they've got talent.
Man Jonathan Taylor is unbelievable. You saw that against Michigan
with speed on the outside, and I think what you
(01:33:45):
saw also from the defense was the fact that they
can run and they can get after the passer. Zack
bond as that edge rush rusher for Wisconsin is really good.
I fully expect him to beat Michigan State Michigan State,
by the way, having to go on back to back
road games at Ohio State and at Wisconsin schedule, that's
just I mean, that's brutal, brutal, um and and so
(01:34:07):
being banged up is not going to help them. I
fully expect Wisconsin to roll into Columbus October and face
Ohio State as both of them being undefeated. Um. I
want to ask you about Nebraska because it was a
game which all the studio guys were talking about and
and Urban was frankly saying, you know how big it was.
Now they can make recruiting calls. But man, I mean
(01:34:27):
they survived Illinois a couple of weeks ago. They get
stomped by Ohio State at home and Martinez gets hurt
and they need to walk on kicker to barely boot
one through to beat Northwestern home. They got to go
to Minnesota this week. Minnesota is undefeated. I don't know
how good the Gophers are, but man, I I felt
like year two, like I don't have these unrealistic expectations
(01:34:49):
about Nebraska, like they're going to compete for a national
championship in year two. But I do feel like even
though there four and two it's been a little disappointing.
Why why isn't nebra Aska outside the Martinez injury a
little bit better? I think they're just slow when I
watch them on TAPEU they're slow. Um, the name of
(01:35:10):
the game is speed. I mean, it just is. Even
even in the even in the Big ten where you
think it's not, it's a little bit you gotta it's
still a little bit more of a power conference outside
of Ohouse States. Well, I don't you know what I
don't know. I mean think about like Michigan's running the
spread offense, right, but they don't have they don't have
they don't have spread players, right, they don't have that many.
(01:35:32):
You know, they kind of have big, elegant Well you
and I talked about this last week. They kind of
are trying to play the spread because they think Shay
is better and that's what everybody else is doing. But
they don't really have the personnel for that. The wide receivers.
You could make an argument maybe do have that talent.
But if if you I'm not disagreeing with you, okay,
I mean listen, it's not the speed that you have
(01:35:53):
another conferences, and certainly you're gonna have more teams that
try to get into a phone booth, There's no doubt
about it. But even for Wisconsin, would did you say
Wisconsin is a phone booth team? Yes, okay, so but Wisconsin,
for me and for my money, what makes them dangerous
this year is the speed They have a secondary off
the edge Defensively, Jonathan Taylor turned on the Jets and
(01:36:14):
just ran seventy three yards halft. Everybody from Michigan like
they have that element now, even on the outside with
with Quintes Cibas, he's got he's got some speed on
the outside. So when I'm talking about top end right
when when you're going into a game, it's still about speed.
And for my money, Nebraska is still slow um in
(01:36:36):
particular on the defensive side. They just don't have anybody
that can that can break the game open, create space,
create distance, create margin on the scoreboard in particular. And
and Minnesota is a team that will for sure be
in this game and might even win this game. They're
quietly five. And oh, by the way, if you were
to ask people all over the country, hey, do you
(01:36:57):
think Minnesota is undefeated, they would all be like, nah,
Minnesota is not undefeated. And here they are five and oh,
now have they done it against anybody that's that's very good?
Not really San Diego State, they squeaked by in a
one possession went not Santego. I'm sorry, South Dakota State
one possession, when one possession went over Fresno, one possession
went over Georgia Southern one possession went over per Due.
(01:37:19):
Then they finally got loose a little bit last week
against Illinois and they won seventeen. But I fully believe
that Minnesota and Nebraska are probably more parallel and more
alike than we would all like to think. I don't
think Nebraska is much better than Minnesota. I don't think
Minnesota is much better than Nebraska. So it's likely comes
down to who turns it over, who doesn't turn it over,
(01:37:41):
and ultimately in the end of the game, in a
one possession game, maybe the kicking game, but I think
Minnesota's got a great chance to win that game. Yeah,
it's it's crazy, and we haven't we haven't really even
talked about Penn State. You've mentioned how dynamic they are
and they're just throttling people. How do you lose what
they lost at quarterback? You know, do you Wan Johnson
kid each answers to Oregon is a grad transferreas a
(01:38:02):
six ft six kind of tight end hybrid. And yet
they they're at least production wise, they're even better. Ninety
four points, only given up seven so far so far
this season. How how have they done this? I've got
it like recruiting. But hey, there's another great example of
what I was saying. They're fast, Like kJ Hammler is
(01:38:23):
a burner, right, He's averaging over twenty yards per catch
this season. He's got four touchdowns and you can't keep
up with them. So again, how do you create space?
How do you create margin on the scar of the scoreboard?
Explosive play, scoring quickly, so on and so forth. They've
they've dropped a seventy nine burger against Idaho. Earlier in
the year, they put fifty nine on Maryland. I mean,
(01:38:46):
teams aren't even coming closer. They've got they've got they've
got speed. Dug on defense too, they get to the quarterback,
they sacked the quarterback. They've got this guy named Grossmatos.
Um YadA, your Grossmatos. And this dude can play on
that side of the football. He's a he's a Burner
Parsons the linebacker. He can run. They've recruited as well
(01:39:08):
as anybody in the conference outside of Ohio State, and
that's coming to Fruition right now. Um, that's the dangerous team.
That's the that's the team that I ultimately expect. They
They're going to play Ohio State in the next to
last game at Ohio State, and it won't shock me
at all at all if Penn State is undefeated along
with Ohio State in a game that will essentially mean
(01:39:29):
the east side of that division. Yeah, it's it's Ohio States.
Schedules interesting. They got Northwestern, they get Wisconsin at home,
they get Penn State at home. But the last two
games against Penn State and at Michigan. Granted, I know
that Hardball has beaten him, and you and I agree,
they're still an enigma. There's still something missing there. But
the idea that they will come off what what will
(01:39:51):
undoubtedly be a massive game against Penn State and not
have a week off and have to face Michigan the
big House should make it all the more interesting. And
of course you'll probably be aware ahead. Yeah, I will
be there, don't worry, There's no doubt I can't wait
for that one. If if in the next three weeks
Penn State takes care of business, I can see a
scenario where they are doug sixth in the country, maybe
(01:40:14):
seventh in the country. They're gonna go to Iowa this week,
they're gonna play Michigan, then they're gonna go to Michigan State.
If they end up winning all of those games and
they're eight no heading into November, I think that there's
a good chance that there's the number six team in
the country, maybe better. Yeah, it doesn't matter how many win,
though they won't pass Clemson, right even though Clemson. I mean,
(01:40:35):
by the way, this is this is this is Michigan.
This is Michigan's uh schedule. They go to Illinois, They're
gonna fire love you, I'm sure at the end of
the year. Then they go to Penn State, Notre Dame
at home at Maryland, Michigan State at Indiana, Ohio State.
We thought this was the year where Michigan had the
easy schedule because they had Notre Dame in Ohio State
at home, but going to Penn State and going to Wisconsin.
(01:40:56):
Those are obviously based upon the egg that they laid
ats haunts and doesn't bow well for them when they
play at Penn State. Hey, Safe Travelers that the crossover
games were tough Wisconsin and Iowa. You know yeah, you
didn't get to avoid anybody like some teams too. Hey,
Safe Travels. The Dallas enjoy the fair and the game.
Can't wait to hear you and Gus uh and uh
(01:41:17):

where are you ramos On Joker? Are you going to
see the movie? Is it too graphic for me? I
would love to see the movie, except, like I said,
it probably could be by myself. We're just with Suzanne
because with the three kids, you gotta find something to
watch everybody, and so I would just be myself and
Susanne if I understand, But I would dere You're our senophile,
aren't you. Yes, the fact I did not get invited
(01:42:04):
to go see The Joker, thank you very much. Uh,
but yes, I would definitely try to go see it.
I understand though it has nothing to do with the
d C like origin type story that we know of
the Jokers. So it might be very dark, yes that
I have heard that as well, very dark, and people
have put on there like on Facebook, do not bring kids,
(01:42:26):
even fifteen year old sixteen year old kids, don't bring them.
That's what I've seen on a lot of people's pages
that have seen it. M By, are you into that
sort of thing? You're not a movie guy, but you
into something super super dark. Well, it's one of those
things where so many people talk about that. My wife
does want to go at some point and see. So,
(01:42:46):
you know what, we actually watched the movie this weekend.
We saw a rocket Man bought it on the old
you know what is it on demand? How was it?
She liked them more than I did. It's more musical
and I like Elton John's music. But just have you
seen Elton Johnny concert? No? I have not pretty good,
I mean it was it's been a long time so
(01:43:06):
We were thirteen years and my wife is pregnant with
my twins that are out thirteen. So that's how long
ago was we saw him. It was in Vegas. He
was great, really really good. Hey, how did the Braves
come back and take the lead? It was three one
and I saw them go three to How did they
come back? I'm un shot? Did he always a little dude, didn't?
He said? These guys hit the ball so hard, like
(01:43:28):
he used to be. Like, look, Aaron Judge steps up.
You're like, that guy is gonna hit the ball far right.
And you look at the size of the Yankees where
they only have I think two starters that are smaller
than six. Too many. It's a big, big club, but
Albas does not look like a huge fella. But these
guys can all swing it, man, It's all in the hips.
It's all on the hips. All right. We're gonna give
(01:43:51):
away our early season Ryan Fitzpatrick Award, plus what's next
for the Washington Redskins we shall discuss next. Be sure
to catch the live edition of The gott Leap Show
weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific Doug Out
Live Show, Fox Sports Tradio. That's not Florida George lyone
and they're good. He's like one to three, just as
(01:44:13):
easy as can be. I can do this, say that
I do why because it seems simple to sing. It's
a simple song. It's harmony, Like you can hide some
of the deficiencies in your voice with the harmony, right,
because you don't have to hit all the notes. Don't
(01:44:34):
get me wrong, that guy is super talented. He raps
a little bit, but you know, it's not like a
Dell out there, not like you have to sing some
of the Dell songs. I think you're right. Yeah, yeah,
probably if you had to pick one song, that would
be the closest world you could be like, yeah, I
could probably can pull that. I can pull that off
and people wouldn't know, like a stand in right, a
lot of smoke. Let's get to the press, the press,
(01:44:59):
Dan Buyer and I we have she do harmony three
part harmony, um during the breaks? What do you got? Doug,
Dan and the Ramblers, that's what John and Ryan they
could be our fiddle player. And yeah, Dan and Shade
was already taken. You wouldn't saw them a little did Yeah? Well?
They they they weren't they didn't open. They co headlined
(01:45:20):
with Flora Georgia line Dan Sad excellent, although you know
it's kind of hard, like they walk out there like
they're badasses and they sing these beautiful love songs. It's like,
doesn't really Yeah, who's the one that does the heavy lifting?
Is it Dan or Shade Shade? So Dan's got it
Good's got like the good hair, He's got kind of
(01:45:41):
a lighter voice, doesn't he doesn't good hair, good skins, things, harmony,
But Dan a Shade does the lifting with the He's
got a great float. Ye. I was gonna say Dan's
got it good. Not only is his name first, but
Shade does all the singing and he still gets the headlining. Yes, yeah,
why not smart play by Shad Shade though, right, because
you know you get that you can have your name first,
(01:46:03):
you can do all that stuff. I get to sing
all the songs. Yeah, there you go, pick a number
one through four, three? Al right, how about yeah? Here
we go. First pitch of breaking ball lifted in the
air left field, back at at Bradley, tell the whoa
d Brandon low go tampo HEGs and hanging branky ball
branky pits it into the left field seats. Praise five
(01:46:27):
Houston wall. That was the third of four home runs
hit by their race today on the Raised Radio network
as they topped Houston tend to three to stay alive
in their series. Justin Verlander, are gonna pitch you on
short rest? He'll throw tomorrow in Game four? Is Za cranky?
Kind of stinky? Yes? Six? Six earned runs? Two hundred
(01:46:49):
million dollars brows, six earned runs. Man, it's the lack
of Zach attack today for the Houston Astros. Braves still
up for three on the Cardinals. That one is in
the sixth inning in St. Louis. I got some more
runners aboard though, do they not? Yes? I got run seven? Yeah?
Now seventh inning, excuse me? Seventh inning runner at third
(01:47:10):
and wow, great place. Uh. Defensive player was a Colton
Wong with the the stop at second base because Juna
was at on third with no one out. I think
a Kunia could have scored, but he thought the picture
was going to get the ball. I dove at the ball. Whatever,
but right, but Kunia did motor to get a triple
for all those he was standing and watching the other day.
He motored to get a triple maybe that's why they're
(01:47:33):
so mad because he can, in fact run. Jake Gruden
is out as the Redskins head coach. I don't want
to ask, is when last night did you guys make
that decision? Oh? I believe it was around eight o'clock,
seven o'clock somewhere around there. And is this for causes?
This for football reasons? It's not for cause. Bruce Allen,
(01:47:54):
the Redskins president, making the announcement. There were reports that
where there's a five am meeting um that Gruden was told, well,
I don't know if you saw so so in these
stadiums especially, and that's not FedEx is not the newest one.
But you know the owners like Cowboys Stadium, you can
they they have busses and cars and everything, and they
got special parking inside the stadium. They have this at FedEx.
(01:48:17):
And apparently like the game was like five minutes after
the game was over, they walked in said something to
Jay and then Bruce Allen and Dan Snyder drove out
and they see the cars kind of come zipping out. Whatever.
It was the earliest they had ever exited a Redskins
post game. I would have them pack up all my
stuff and send it ups. That's what I would do,
just to get back at the Redskins for firing. I
(01:48:40):
don't like the having somebody else packed my stuff, all right,
nobody touches my stuff and nobody likes it. But sometimes
it happens that coffee. I'm sorry, Oh that we had more.
The Tennessee Titans have released kicker Cairo Santos after he
missed well, not one to three, but four were field
(01:49:00):
goal attempts and yesterday's lost to the Bills. The NFL
Network says the Titans are expected to sign former Bears
kicker Parky was really good in the tryout with the
Charges and they probably should have signed him. Now he's
gonna be a Titan. That's one of those like like
the Bills are beneficiaries of a game that they should
have lost. Yes absolutely. The Giants they lost yesterday to
(01:49:23):
the Minnesota Vikings, now have the Patriots on a short
week that's Thursday Night Football four weeks six, and they've
placed wide receiver Sterling Shepherd and concussion protocol, so his
availability for Thursday now extremely in question for the Giants.
The Giants. Giants do they but they should have their

running back back we believe, Yeah, miraculous recovery for sake
Kwon Barkley. Oklahoma head coach Lincoln Riley has told As
players not to not use the horns down gesture during
the Red River rivalry this Saturday when they faced Texas. Instead,
they'll do the one fingers up is horns down like
(01:50:07):
it just horns down, you know, horns up like it's
not it's not like the Rick Flair. Will you cross
your hands in frontier? That's far more offensive than horns down. Yes, yeah,
I actually think it's so unique that you can have
that as your gesture. And then I think it's also
unique that you can spin it around because when Arizona
(01:50:28):
State does, there's there are a lot of different reasons
for that. Yeah, but but Texas it's yeah, it's so
good natured fun alright. Uh. Next week, the XFL will
hold their inaugurear Old Draft for the season quarterbacks. They're
as signing a quarterback to each of the eight franchises,
so apparently the starting quarterbacks aren't going to be drafted,
(01:50:52):
but the two day draft for the XFL takes place
next week. Can't wait. The best press Um, it's just fine.
So that the gesture. You're talking about the wheat Shockers
of Wichita State. Use he has none. My first n
c A tournament game I've I ever did? Okay was
(01:51:15):
or weekend ever did? Uh? They beat Gonzaga in the
second round of the tournament in Salt Lake City and
I tweeted out the wheat shocker like they do the
wheat shocker, So that's actually like their mascot does it,
and uh yeah, I got a call from the president
of CBS Sports like what are you doing? Do you
know what that means? It's like, well, it's a little
(01:51:36):
double Entendra, Probably not my smartest move. Uh. By the way,
if you were just joined the show, we gave the
inaugurable Ryan Fitzpatrick Early Season m v P Award. We
made it a co award, Dak Prescott, Lamar Jackson. Of course,
Ryan Fitzpatrick came back down Earth was oh and five
(01:51:56):
his last five starts, just like Lamar and Dhak. So
we pump our brakes. We moved to the second part
of the season. The Doug gottl Lips Shop
