listening to Fox Sports Radio. Boom, What Up America? Doug
Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Radio can come into you from beautiful, sunny,
wind swept southern California. I hope you're having a spectacular
(00:42):
day as we are a day away from I don't know,
probably coolest holiday we have, right, coolest holiday, maybe not
best holiday, coolest holiday. I like Halloween, like Halloween, and
I think it's funny. Um. The Dug Gotlip Show, of course,
is about by Discovery Card. We treat you like you
(01:04):
treat you. I do think it's funny that there there
will be somebody called out for some um, some seemingly
offensive costume. I I do find this to be ironic
about Halloween. We're somehow okay getting dressed up as ax murderers, right,
but if somebody wears an outfit that we deemed to
(01:27):
be offensive otherwise offensive, Well, then, dude, Twitter, I have
to call them out, like, shouldn't it be offensive to
be dressed as a made up Ax murder? I don't know,
but I do. I love people's creativity. I don't generally
have that gene right where you can, where you can
be come up with a great Halloween costume. I had
(01:49):
a costume party this past weekend. It was good, but
it wasn't like, oh, super super clever. It was an
eighties one and I get dressed up as an eighties
ball coach. Right that. That's about the extent of it.
But of Halloween. I love Halloween. I hope you do too,
and we're going to be celebrating a new champion in baseball.
Get to my thoughts on the controversy last night, Game
(02:12):
six of the World Series Nats takedown. Justin Verlander will
also talk a little bit about vern Lander and and
the Verlander Kershaw thing, if you will. But I think
we should start, man, we've been here a lot of times.
Should we with Baker Mayfield? Why not? A right? Let's
start with Baker Mayfield, who um had an interesting back
(02:36):
and forth with a reporter earlier today, there was a
lack of there's a penalty, so we're negative yards, so
there was a lot of time between status. Well, when
the penalty happened, then we're behind the chance. No, no no, no,
stop saying but I just told you the clock was
running and we had a penalty. Do you want to
(02:57):
give them the ball back? No, you don't play. You
don't know it. That's the plain and simple. Was I
happy with the drive? Note we didn't score points? It's
the dumbest question you could ask, what Jesus? Obviously, and
and look this is I'm not gonna sit here and
tell you this is the worst thing on earth. He
walked away afterwards. He was obviously frustrated with the line
(03:17):
of questioning it. It was a dumb follow up were
you happy with the drive? Sort of question? Um, he
clearly knows the reporter and it's different. You know how
we take it is? Boy it sure it really did
sound kind, but there was the I played you didn't
It was condescending an answer Jesus like, what are you
asking me? But that should supposed to be your internal monologue,
(03:41):
not your external monologue. Do I think it's the biggest
deal on earth? Like? No, I'm a reasonable human being.
I don't think it's the biggest deal on earth. But
this is kind of what we told you, kind of
why we told you he should stay away from the
eating back and forth at Colin Cowherd. Why he doesn't
(04:04):
have to take up every battle, why he doesn't have
to comment, encounter, comment on everybody else's thoughts, because there's
this is what he has to do on a daily basis.
You want me quarterback of any NFL team, You're gonna
have to answer questions your team is not playing well.
People gonna ask you, and they're gonna ask you from
a perspective. They don't really understand the sport. They just don't.
(04:28):
We don't really understand the sport like a football player does.
We just don't. Um we should, we should have a
higher level, but there's no way that we can know
all the different things that are going on. And and
of course he also has to balance out, all right,
what do I really tell this guy? What do they
really want? Because there's a pretty good chance somebody doesn't
(04:52):
somebody screwed up, somebody doesn't know where they're supposed to be,
and I can't sell them out right. A lot that
goes to it. But ever, everybody wants to be everybody
wants to be this kind of I want to be
the center of attention. I'm different. I can take the negativity.
I can until you're thrust into it. It takes a lot.
(05:16):
It takes a lot to take a breath and look
people in the eye and go like, well, actually, you know,
we're trying to not give the ball back. There's a
lot of other factors in it. I'm trying to read
the defense of doing this or doing that. Blah blah, blah,
blah blah. Here's Baker Mayfield's tweets. Everybody. Everybody wants to
(05:38):
hear the truth until they actually get it. I am
who I am, and I've always been. Don't call it
emotional when it's convenient, and then passion when it fits.
I care about winning, So yeah, I'm frustrated. If I
was to act like it's okay to lose, then y'all
wouldn't say I've you would y'all would say I've gotten complacent.
My sense of urgency is an all time high, and
I'm offended. And if I've offended anybody, aren't along the
(06:01):
way too bad? Like, what are you like the job
is hard enough, right, Like the job is hard enough
as it is. Do you really want to go? Like, hey,
if you don't like the way I act, and I
don't apologize, and I don't expect him to have to apologize,
(06:23):
but it's just this persona that he doesn't and I
guess part of it is the the team hasn't told
him this is just not the way. It's hard enough
to lead fifty three guys forty six on game day
into battle. It's hard enough to win in the National
Football Like, man, this is that's a hard job. There's
(06:44):
like fifteen guys on the planet who are considered really
good at it. Fifteen guys, fifteen guys. There have been
guys who you know, I mean these quarterbacks that get
drafted and they don't do well in the NFL. They
are generally athletes who have been good at everything their
(07:08):
entire lives, and they've been a starter since they started
playing football. Like one of the things that makes Aaron
Rodgers different is to start playing until eighth grade. Was
the starting quarterback to Layton High School. The only had
you know didn't have scholarship offers. When did you like
he's been told no, and that's driven him. But a
lot of these guys, especially the ones that are stars
(07:28):
in college, like they've just been great at everything they've done,
and so they're just not used to any of the adversity.
Baker has been through it. Baker's a little bit more
Aaron Rodgers, although he had way more Scott he might
have been a walk on, but he actually had more
scholarship offers than Aaron Rodgers did. He was at three
(07:49):
time Heisman finalists, did win the Heisman trumph, he was
a number one overall picks. There's plenty of people that
told him he could play, but but being quarterback is
hard and off like why do you want the added criticism?
Why do you want the added attention? And if he
didn't like how people are perceiving this, again, a lot
(08:13):
of the perception is not just based upon the frustration
and the walking away from a reporter's question. No matter
how um rudimentary the quarter the question may have seemed
to answer. It's all of the other stuff that makes
this into a big deal. It's obviously the thought that
(08:33):
they could play with anybody, like, look, he's the one
who woke up saying I woke up feeling dangerous right
like he this is a lot like Steph Curry. Yesterday
I pointed out that Steph Curry. And this is going
back a couple of nights ago. Uh. They went again
to beat New Orleans Pelicans, and he's like, yeah, you know,
twenty seven News psycho, everybody trying to say we suck, Like, no,
(08:55):
you guys actually said you suck. And then when we
go like, hey, even they say they suck, they must
be really bad at suddenly we become the bad guys.
Same thing with Baker Mayfield, like look, you were the
ones who put you know, who put no limits on
your ceiling. You're the one who said, you know you're
here for all the smoke. Now you get some and
you're like, dude, well what are you doing? Why are
(09:16):
you coming at me? Like why why you get super defensive?
I can't help you. I can't help you think of
look around the end off You're not the only team
that's struggling. Now. Marcus Mariota's you know, was there thinking
about trading him. They brought another quarterbacks, They already benched him.
(09:38):
Has he said a word, not one, no one that
he's happy. No, I mean Carson Wentz dudes calling him
out unnamed sources, you know, saying that that a simple checkdown,
(09:59):
uh is good enough. And he's trying he's forcing the ball.
He's trying to be too smart with it. Did Carson
wentn't say anything when they were struggling. Nope. Kirk Cousins,
when he was called out, he was just like hey, sorry.
He never once said, well, you know, if we do
play calling changed, let me throw the ball downfield or
maybe if you want off the line of scrimmage. No,
(10:19):
that's not the way the position is played. It's a
position of leadership. And leadership sometimes is taking the blame
even when it's not your fault. Leadership is answering dumb
questions and making them seem like they're much smarter than
they are. That's just supposed to do. That's the game.
That's what we do. And you get Baker sitting here
going like, nah, I do it my way, Like all right, dude,
there's an easy way in a hard way. You are
(10:40):
intentionally choosing the hard way, and this is what the
hard way feels like. No, my, my, My sense of
urgency is an all time high. What does your sense
of urgency have to do with just answering a couple
of questions about last week's game. Baker Mayfield just making
a heart of him on himself, the job, the sport,
(11:02):
the position hard enough. Don't need any help, dude, That
position is hard enough, all right? Coming up next were
we need to understand that it will never be perfect,
and so there is some there is There has to
(11:27):
be an acceptance of imperfection. And it comes down to life,
comes down to your face, that comes down to your sports.

(11:49):
going through? Was that premarital counseling? Was that? What was
actually called? Now? This is a licensed psychologist or a
or a priest? Yea pastor, local pastor local pastor what
kind of church? Uh? Just nondenomination? You have no idea?
(12:11):
What kind of churches? No, it's not, it's just a
regular you have no No, you have no idea. Right,
it's Christian church, right, this is Christian, Baptist, Episcopalian, Lutheran.
It has to be some denomination I don't believe. So no,
(12:32):
do you call him pastor Joe that I do not.
His name is Brennan, Brennan, Pastor Brennan. But like the
idea of counseling in you know, whether it's a licensed psychologist, psychiatrist,
or a pastor or just a friend. Sometimes people give
you a gems, right gems. They're like, man, I gotta
(12:53):
write that one down. Which is what you what you
gave to me? Right? It was a gem that he
shared with you, wasn't it. That's correct? This Pastor Brennan
in Um Santa Clarita, California, gave you this, this gem? Right? That?
How did it was? It was talking about what pre
marriage stuff, And there's three things in your life you
(13:16):
can control, right. It was about you know, when you
have to have difficult conversations with people and bringing up
topics that could be uncomfortable and perhaps make people upset
and whatever. So there's only three things you can control,
which one of those not being how other people react.
You can only control how you act, how you react
(13:37):
and your attitude. Okay, So I was thinking about this
when you when you told me this, I was like, man,
that kind of makes me think and you gotta tell
me if I'm crazy here, kind of makes me think
of the Nats last night, right, So I don't know
if I mean Ramos. We we talked about the baseball game.
How much of it? Did you actually watch most of it? Okay, Um,
(13:59):
I'm not gonna say you and say I watched all
of it, but I did. I watched the first inning.
By the way, John Smoltz is amazing, Like people give
credit to Romo because Romo will call multiple plays whatever
I've been told, you know, like I've sat next to
other quarterbacks and other quarterbacks have do that, and I've
done that right, because there's a read like reading where
(14:19):
the ball is going is one thing like what Smollst
did the very first pitch. He's like, oh, George Springer,
fast ball hitter, and of course he was facing Steven Strasburg.
Just you know, I feel like he's gonna try and
hit a home run here to start the game. First
pitch gonna be a fast ball and he's gonna tee
off on it. He hit a ball so damn hard,
(14:40):
and it was a tough first inning for Strasburg. He
did end up giving up a two run to run
home run UM was spring around third base. But that
actually the exit velo of the two run home run,
which I think was Alex Bregman h or or no,
maybe maybe it wasn't a two run it was. It
(15:01):
was Bregman right the ball Bregman hit, the exit velo
was only like ninety four minur The exit velo for
Springers hit was like a hundred sixteen miles an hour.
It was a freaking rocket. But you know, it hit
like the top part of the wall and left field.
Otherwise it's still rolling down the freeway. Anyway, Smalls is incredible.
(15:25):
So fast forward to the seventh inning. Okay, and in
the seventh inning the score at the time I believe,
and I mean, you guys can can check me if
I'm wrong, because I was. I'm watching the game and
at the time, it's, uh, it's three too right, three
(15:45):
to the Nationals have a lead. Gomes singles and Trey
Turner comes up. Now Trade Turner has I mean, he's
fast as hell, alright, fast as how so trade Turner
comes up and he grounds grounds the ball. Um, It's
almost like a swinging bunt, and Brad peacocks the picture.
(16:08):
He picks it up. He throws it to Julie gary All,
and Trade Turner looks to be safe because gary All
drops the ball and or bobbles the ball and it
goes past him. Turner goes to second, Gomes goes the third.
It's second and third, nobody out and all of a
sudden and again credit Joe Buck He's like guys. Trade
Turners called out for interference. So you go to the
(16:32):
replay and look, is he running on the on the
on the grass and his first bunch of steps, yes,
he is. It also is, by the way, like a
straight line. Considering where he is, it's one of the
like you start to understand the Trade Turner. This is
probably something he does where he always runs in a
straight line. He's in the front of the batter's box
and it was straight to first base. But right at
(16:53):
the point where the ball hits him, brushes up on
his and the glove hits him, he's actually in the
He's actually in the base path correctly. So they call
him out and Davy Martinez loses his mind, I mean
loses his mind. The Astros promptly pitching change from one out,
(17:18):
Adam Eating pops out and then Rendon hits a home
run to make it five to two. Then you go
to the ninth inning and Trey Turner comes up after
roblaz uh uh um. He comes up and he hits
a double off of I think Davinski, and then Rendon
(17:39):
hits another double, Adam eating a bit hit by a pitch,
So they scored two more at seven to two, and
it really didn't matter from there exactly. Strasburg tried to
finish it up. The point is that, look, pitching is
the instant. Replay is not perfect, and it felt like
what was a judgment call and they tried to over
(18:00):
hearn it and decided not to. Much like past interference,
which people want to have it overturned, and they have all.
They haven't overturned all but I think one of them
this year. We can all agree that umpiring officiating is
not perfect, and even with replay, it's not going to
be perfect. It's really hard because some things are judgment calls.
(18:23):
Some things are black and white, and even black and
white sometimes it's just judgment. You know, at first base,
when the actually when have you actually secured the ball?
Is it when it hits the mid or when you
close the mid and that split second between being safe
and being out. Like, these things are hard to tell,
so we can all agree that this is it's it's
actually we keep trying to perfect it. And it's a
(18:44):
lot like people who get facial surgery, you know, like
you get a little something done, you're like, oh, that
might look better, get your nose done. I mean, what
happened Michael Jackson. The more he tried to fix his nose,
the worst it God. And you see these women where
they try and look younger and younger, and they all
end up looking like the joker. We keep trying to
make things perfect, and yet we get more and more
(19:05):
frustrated because they're just not. It's not perfect. It's completely imperfect.
And so this kind of brings me back to what
you were talking about music. There's three things you can control,
how you act, how you react, in your attitude. Now,
Davy Martinez lost his mind, he got super ticked. But
you know what, it didn't affect Rendon who hit a
(19:26):
two run home run later on the inning. And you
can sit there and be mad if you're a Nationals fan,
and I was sitting I just thought, like, man, what
should have been a two three run home run was
a two run home run. Will that come back and
bite the Nationals? It did not take a Listen to
John Smoltz talking about the Nationals and how they responded
after the controversial call it first base, the good news.
As frustrated as many people who are watching this game
trying to figure out why that rule is the way
(19:48):
it is, it's no different than maybe other sports have
those little intangible rules like past interference in football. It
didn't end the inning, and the Nationals had a chance
to still do something, and they did something. They hit
a huge two home run. So as frustrating as that
it ain't could have been, they salvaged it. It wasn't
the third out call, and so credit the Nationals and
(20:08):
certainly Random for coming up huge and that could have
been a huge momentum swing the other way. He's right, right,
um m hm. The the the Saints, people like we
tell we're gonna tell the story about the Saints, and
(20:31):
we're gonna sit there and say they got screwed, period,
end of story. Right, That's what we're gonna say. And
even if you don't want to pretend that it was
third down and first down, remember um Drew Brees, which
should have been a run. He checked out of it.
He threw the ball and had a bad throw that
stopped the clock. That left time on the clock for
the Rams. Right, we forget first and second down. The
(20:53):
fact is that they could have stopped the Rams. Then
they got the ball in overtime and and score, and
then they turned it over and then the Rams come down,
kick a field goal and win the game. Like that
was not the end of the story. Okay, even uh
(21:13):
two thousand and eight, I think it was. When Memphis
have the nine point lead two minutes to go San
Antonio National Championship game, they missed some free throws, they
tried to foul, they don't foul in the backcourt, and
Mario Chalmers hits the three. It goes to overtime and
Kansas runs over. It's like we got him, but the
game wasn't over on the May three. There's five more
(21:35):
minutes in overtime and you may be exhausted, you made
have thought you won the game, but there's still more
to be played. But the point is, again this kind
of brings it back. Music's pastor Pastor Brennan Nondenominational Church
UM how you act, how you react in your attitude.
You can sit there and go like, we got screwed.
(21:56):
I can't believe it got screwed. It's over all right.
We went one stuff for that call, but it wasn't.
It was the seventh inning. It was so far from
being over. One of the reasons I think the Nationals
wanted that extra run even after Rendn't hits the home
run is there, Like, dude, we still got nine ounce
(22:17):
to get against the Astros in their ballpark with ball
just flies out. How you act, how you react in
your attitude. Credit to Washington Nationals and how this crazy
series right where the road team has won all six
games so far, first time in Major League Baseball history.
(22:39):
Stuck Gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio, and he's uh,
he's number He's number eighty one, and he finds a
way to be open, whether it's deep ball threat or
on third down back shoulder throw. He's one of the,
if not the favorite target for Philip Rivers. He's l
a Chargers wide receiver. Mike Williams, he joins us in
the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Mike, you've
(23:02):
been in this league long enough now where you've seen
kind of both sides of it. Right. You have the
year where you had to you had to sit and
watch last year where um, so many things went right.
This year where so many things have gone wrong. What's
it like though, two two weeks ago, kind of give
away a game right like first and goal from like
the one inch line um against the Titans, when you
(23:25):
know Melvin fumbled right at the goal line, to like
give away a game last week and then get a
gift this week? The motions, what is that like? To
actually go through? It was pretty crazy, you know, just
playing in Tennessee, just the situation, just knowing that we
won the game, the situation that were in and it
is not going our way. And I feel like this year,
(23:45):
you know, the play is not going our way. Last
year was in those close games, everything was going our way,
and this year it seems, you know opposite. You know,
just coming from Chicago this past weekend, you know, having
to rely on their kicking the MR kids, you know,
we we don't want to really put ourselves in the situation,
but we'll take the take the w however it comes.
(24:05):
We we happy to get that win. On the roads
the wind. It's hard to come or come by these leads.
So we gotta just you know, continue from that, just
continue to build these of ws, all right, and uh
and then you know you return home and and and
and a change is made with the offensive coordinators can
can wizzen hunt. Uh is not retained. What was your
(24:26):
reaction when you heard the news? It was tough, you know, Uh,
I really haven't had any coaches changes since I've been here.
And you know with offics ave coordinator, you know, on
the office, the side of the bar, and you know,
you're just kind of looking at mirror, like what could
I have done better? You know maybe if I could
have done something better, he probably would have been there.
It is kind of you gotta kind of reflect, just
(24:47):
think about some things, you know, and I mean move on.
You know, it's a business. You know, people get cut
every day, Coaches lose job. He's gotta you know, come
in with the mentality to get better today. You know,
if we're gonna have to steal focus on the guys
in this locker room and all the to you know,
they're capable of doing making a great game plan, be
coming out and making play. So we just got continue
to focus with the guys that we have in the
locker room. All right, when you had that kind of, uh,
(25:10):
the moment of self reflection, what do you think, what
can you do better that you're not doing when you
look at like your own performance, Well, I mean it's everybody.
I mean it's not just one person you look at
feel like if it's everybody, I mean as an offense, Uh,
if your coach get fired, you know, you just kind
of look at yourself in the mirror and like, we
have to get better. I mean obviously you don't want
(25:32):
to see anyone lose their job. I mean just last
week he was with us. Now you're not with us.
So I mean we just gotta as an offense, you know,
just kind of regroup, you know, make the place that
come out way and everything else would be solid. Yeah, No,
it's look, it's it's kind of been hard, right, Like
you didn't have your left tackle. You know, you didn't
have Poundcy Poundcy. You didn't have Melvin for you know,
(25:54):
a portion of the season. Um, you know, they didn't
have your your starting tight end for couple weeks there.
So I mean the whole thing, the the injuries and
then you know, losing kind of those close ones. Right,
Packers come to town. Obviously they have the Smith Boys
that they have a tremendous pass rush. Um, what what's
the key to moving the ball against the Packers? Uh,
(26:16):
let's just get back to doing doing it And that's
the main thing. Whatever whatever it takes. You know, you
could have a game two dudes coming up the edge
and the Smith Boys. I mean, we just got to
contain those two guys, you know, make the players on
the edge. That's the main thing to team, To make
the players out there. Uh when they come to you,
you know, just get the offense going and everything else
happening on his own. Did you see Austin Neckler's video
(26:39):
where he's reading a book and doing one arm pull ups?
Have you seen that? Yeah? That was crazy. So you
can't do that. But I mean that one of the
strunkles does on the team. I mean he kind of posts.
But those videos, you know, like every Monday or Tuesday,
him and his girlfriend, you know, doing we're exercising. That
(27:00):
just egg man just showing you his scrump things probable. Yeah,
I think I also he had short arms too, right,
if you had long arms like you, that'd be harder
to do. You know, I kind of say that too
short homes. You want to have a long way to go,
long on guys like myself, you know, we have a
long way to go. So I mean I think he's
making I don't think there's there's there's no doubt there, right.
(27:20):
I mean, that's just it's like that's like dudes on
the little short arm, dudes on bench press, like, oh yeah,
well you try it when you have long arms. It's
a way, it's a completely different exercise. Mike Williams joining
us in the Doug Otlib Show on Fox Sports Radio. UM,
I think people want to really know, like, look, the
Packers haven't been a town in like a decade um,
(27:41):
and me more than that obviously haven't been to Los Angeles. UM,
you know since the you know, since going back to
when the Raiders and Rams and that there is a
huge fan base. We saw it with obviously with Pittsburgh. UM,
what is that like to play what feels like a
road game even when you're at home. Be honest, I
don't really pay attended to it, kind of zone a
(28:02):
kind of just focus on what's on the field. I
mean I don't need really realized it until you know,
someone after the game was something they talk about it,
But I just kind of, you know, focus on the
players that's on the field. I mean, obviously we're not playing,
you know, against the fans. I mean we're playing against
the guys that's on the field. So I mean, who
shows up, whoever is there. I mean, we have to
play football regardless. So we just got to go out
(28:24):
there and play football. And this Sunday in Carson, the
Green Bay Packers come to town. The Chargers fresh off
win over the Bears, and of course Mike Williams to
be there one uh, looking to catch a touchdown past Mike.
Thanks so much for joining us. Best of luck this
week against the Packers, so appreciate it. Alright, pleasures mind
Doug gotlip show here on Fox Sports Radio. There's a
(28:47):
there's a big discussion in New York with the Jets
with the Jamal Adams deal. I want to get to
matter a matter of fact, I'll give you just kind
of a little quick take on that. Jamal Adams said
his his feelings just from rich to me and who
covers the team. His feelings were hurt by trade talks,
he said. He declined Joe Douglas at their GM's invitation
today to clear the air, says he's not ready to
(29:07):
talk yet, Like dude, what now. Apparently he said he
went to Adam Gates last week and said he didn't
want to be trade. You want to stay with the team,
and he took the Twitter to tell how upset he was.
But like, but but I hate to break it to here,
like it, this is a this is You're You're a
GM removed from the one who drafted you. You're a
(29:30):
coach removed from the one to draft you. And I
look at what the what the Jets did as as
as making up and make my move listing on Zillo right,
make me move. I don't know if you guys know
what this is. Make me move is basically like some
dream price, Like, hey, dude, you want to pay me
a million dollars in my house, it's worth five hundred
(29:50):
thou dollars. I'll move in a second. Let's get it done, Jamal, Adam,
you went talk about being in your feelings. The feelings
were hurt by trade talks, so we declined to talk
to the GM who wanted to clear the air. Got
it the right, got it a lot to get to
(30:14):
Don't worry Bama fans too, will be back in time
for l s U. Real news are fake news. By
next be sure to catch the live edition of The
Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific.
Doug Gottleip Show, Fox Sports Radio. We got some more.
Jamal Adams sound coming for you. I can't wait to
you hear it. It's great. He he put himself in
(30:36):
Tom Brady's category, Patrice, don't take calls on Tom Brady. Jamal, Look,
I love you. You're a good player. You're on one
of the worst teams in football. You're probably their best
defensive player. Do yourself a real solid here, right, Like,
I know you think, I leave yourself there, Scooter, I
(30:59):
got it, got it. But don't you ever ever put
Tom Brady's name in your mouth? Okay, Right? Tom Brady
has been to more Super Bowls as a player than
you've watched as a human. Right. He's literally I mean
(31:25):
the idea that you go like, hey, Patriots, don't take
calls from Tom Brady. I put myself in that category. Bro,
You're literally the only person on earth. Let's get to
let's get to a game. Okay, this is game time.
Side on the Doug Gottlieb Show, Danny Way again, Man, Doug,
(31:51):
the game today is real news, fake news, real news
or fake news that According to one sports book, the
Astros are already the favorites to in the World Series
that would be next season. Is that real news are
fake news? That is uh, that is fake news there
and they're spectacular and online list the Astro says a
(32:15):
five to one favorite to win it all next season.
The Gnats and Yankees are listed at eight to one,
with the next best odds. Remember when the hot stove
League Baseball used to be awesome and then like you know,
like it's not now now teams just don't want to
sign anyone. They don't want to pay anybody, right right, Well,
they actually figured out they do want to pay a
(32:36):
couple of guys. I mean, Bryce Harper did get paid,
like we make it out like you didn't get anything,
thirteen year deal for over three hundred million dollars. Mike
Child got a deal that's gonna pay more four hundred
million dollars. But for the most part, no, they don't
want to Yeah. Usually December was the time the hot
stove was cooking not anymore a real news or fake news.
That Alabama quarterback to a tongue by Loa will be
a game time decision for their matchup against number one
(32:58):
LSU in a week and a half. That is real news.
They're real and they're spectacular. Maybe the only thing that
could be fake about it is the college football playoff
rankings come out next week. Maybe LS you won't be
number one. Who knows, but yeah, Nick Saban says too
was going to be a game time decision if he
continues to progress well from that ankle injury. The guests
(33:20):
as he plays, the question is how effective hell big
real news are fake news. The Lions and Chargers were
in deep talks on a trade that would have sent
running back Melvin Gordon to Detroit prior to yesterday's trade deadline. Um,
that's real news. Maybe you know something that I don't,
but I had it as fake news because the Lions
were talking to the Falcons about Davante Freeman, but no
(33:43):
deal was completed prior to the deadline. There are lots
of like talks that didn't happen. It's like I once
had a girl who might have liked me in high
school fists. Would we be drinking every day? Right? Yeah?
The NFL network said, is the sides did speak. I'm
the Falcons. I mean he's another one with a big contract.
(34:05):
You got Matt Ryan, you got Julio Jones, now Davante
Freeman and their one in seven. Real news are fake
news or report from the Athletics says the Raptors want
to be set up to make a play if Jhannas
and ten A Kompo becomes a free agent. They're real
and they're spectacle. Yeah, the Athletics says, don't expect the
(34:26):
Raptors to make any moves that could hurt their cap
space in the summer, as they are interested in Janice. Well,
the Lakers also have Janice's brother on the team. He
should be in the G League and I'll probably end
up in the G League, right, So everybody's going to
make a play in Jhannice. That just doesn't mean that
they'll land him. The Bucks have his other brother on
(34:46):
their team as well, so it comes down to which
brother he likes. More real news, real news are fake news.
The Mavericks changed the address of American Airline Center to
forty one Switch Street in honor of drk Nevitski. That's
real news street. Yeah, it is fake news. The Mavericks
(35:08):
in the city of Dallas instead renamed the street by
the arena Lewitsky Way. I liked mind though, forty one
Switch Street. That sounds pretty good, right, Yeah, yeah, real
news are fake news. Lebron James started a Taco Tuesday
chant at Staples Center last night. He did not start it,
but he did. They did get it going and he
encouraged I'll say that's fake news. Alright, technicality the uh
(35:33):
the Lakers said that he started it, but maybe it
was somebody else and then Lebron to get up to
another level a real news are fake news. We're not
keeping score. By the way, this one. When the w
w E holds their first evan ever women's match in
Saudi Arabia, both performers will have to wear a tire
that covers their arms and legs. Is that real news
are fake news? Wow, that's a hard one. I'm gonna
(35:54):
go fake news. They're real? Do they? The w to
THEE said it took six years for them to figure
out a way to have a women's match in the country,
and as part of that they will end up having
to cover their legs and cover their sleeves. The performers,
the Italian Nine Hearts and Lacy Evans will be in
(36:16):
the match, and so this is game time on the
Duck Gottlieb Show. But will the Iron Sheek be there?
I think that's a bigger question, right, won't then the
Iron Sheek have to have to wrestle the Iron Sheets
still alive on Twitter? Right, so Dann she could still
still still alive? I think I think all right, we
(36:40):
got a lot to get to here. On the Doug
Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio, Martellis Bennett will join
us upcoming next courses. Brother is now in Dallas and
just made a big concession. He's not gonna he's gonna
stand for the national anthem. All right, that's Michael Bennett.
So uh, Jerry Jones said, duh, I'm satisfied that. And Michael,
(37:02):
we've got a player who knows what we can do
here to with with the Dallas Cowboys. They don't anticipate
that he will kneel. I want to catch with Martelli
spend does he miss playing football? And what's the best
thing about being a New York Giant you don't want
to miss it. It's next. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio in
(37:25):
the I Heart Radio A app. What off Doug Gottlieb Show,
Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're having a great day.
Do gotlip show is brought to you by Discover Card.
We treat you like you, treat you a lot to
get to Game seven World Series up coming, we'll talk
(37:45):
about it. Max Chesa, Max ches I love Max Scherzer.
I am. I am so fired up to see him
pitch in the Game seven of a World Series. I mean,
you think you think about this and Mart tell us,
but it's gonna join us in a moment. But this
(38:06):
is a seven time All Star, three times say Young
Award winners. So he's one in in both the American
League with the Detroit Tigers, then twice in the National League.
Remember he bet on himself in Detroit where didn't take
their initial contract offer, which is a big one and
nearly doubled it. Had twenty strikeouts in a game two
(38:27):
or fifty strikeouts in five straight seasons. You know he
has two immaculate innings. Do you know what immaculated innings are?
You guys know what an ammculating is. The immaculating is
when um, a picture throws like nine strikes and nobody
(38:49):
touched it. Nine pitches for an inning and three strikeouts
and there's like a handful of dudes who've done it.
He's done it twice. Oh, it's really crazy. But you
know he doesn't have does never ring and he has
a chance. Uh, he has a chance to to solidify
(39:11):
himself as one of the greatest postseason pictures of all
time on the road and in a series where only
road teams have won. So that's pretty crazy stuff. Let's
let's welcome to Martell's Bennet, a super Bowl champion, former
Hooper members of McDonald's All American in high school, played
some hoop at Texas. A and M also tied endity
A and M. He knows the thing or two about
(39:32):
playing football. These days, he's spending more time behind the
elector and as part of a hilarious new online school
that teaches fans how to watch football. Last weekend, Professor
Bennett brought his teachings to the tailgate for a bowl
game that turned into a bowl cut for a few
students who didn't quite make the grade. It's presented by
dosek's Michael Thanks to I mean Martella. Sorry, thanks so
(39:53):
much for taking time. What is it like for you,
with your long career to simply be watching football? I
mean I don't really watch very often, so I guess
it's it's just like watching anything else on television. I'm
not really person. Yeah, I'm not a big TV person. Yeah, so, uh,
(40:13):
but I don't. I've never been one to watch sports.
I've never been a sports fan overall, you know, saying
like I know sports, and I don't mind watching the
game with people who like, um like the game, but
like a lot of times it's it's interesting, I don't
I get. I try to figure out why people like it,
you know when I'm watching, because it's one thing that
I'm a player, right, like I'm over a player. That's
(40:35):
why I never thought about like commentating or anything like that,
you know, because then I would have to watch the
game and talk about the game. So did you? But
you love you like playing it? You just don't like
watching it? Yeah, Like even basketball, Like now I'll go
play I'd rather go play pick a basketball but watching
the basketball game to me, it's like, yeah, that's cool,
but like, why watch it when you could do it?
(40:55):
UM tend to agree with you. That's actually my son
says that too. He actually he's ten years always like Dad,
I'm a do or not a watcher, Like exactly. I
like that. I like that kid, you know why because
we need doers and we need watchers. But it's good
to realize that you're a door because that keeps you
active and you want to go do it and you
don't want to be you know, it's an activity that
(41:17):
you could do, right, So what but what what what
was it like to be in the locker room where
you do have some guys are like they're all about it, right,
Like they leave and they watch football, they want to
talk football, and you're like, yo, I play football. But
that's that's just that kind of that's kind of the
end of it. What was that existence like during your
playing your professional playing career? Yeah? I see that because
(41:37):
for some people that's their identity, right, their identity is
tied to that sport, so they came they can't really
ever leave the sport because then they don't know who
they are as a person, right, So without the sport,
there's no bone structure to their being right, so they
just collapse. So you see that a lot, right because
from a young age, you've been you've been tied to
(41:57):
that sport. You've been great at that sport. This is
or it as you. They describe you by how fast
your run, how big you are, how big your hands are,
for the ability to play the sport. They don't celebrate
how smart you are, how you know the big I
did you have those things right there? So a lot
of guys they don't have any other identities, and there's
this form of PTSD that guy's experience after they leave
(42:17):
the game because they don't know. It's an identity crisis.
So I see a lot of guys who like to
stick around to feel like they belong, they have something
that makes them feel connected to something bigger than themselves.
And I never truly felt that way by football with
something about creativity and making things. So for me, I
knew who I was and I just enjoyed playing the game.
So for me, it was just about playing and enjoying
(42:39):
and being good at this very cool What about your brother? What? What? What?
Where is? Where is he? In regards to um his
love for all things football as opposed to the creative side.
But you guys have done a lot of stuff together.
I know you have to ask for you ask, you
have to ask them because changes every day. One day
you want to play, the next day you want to retire.
(42:59):
Depends on how this season is going. Uh, what you've
you've you've been in New England. You gave him some
some heads up as to how it was gonna go.
Why did you think it ended? What I mean, why
do you think it ended early for him? I mean
I think it's I just feel like it was in
the right situation for him. And that happens all the
(43:20):
time with different teams. You bring this guy in, you
get there, they like you, but then you realize, like, hey, coach,
I want to contribute, I want to do more. We
switched the defense stuff. Let me go to a place
where I can do more things. Right, because we are competitives.
Like a competitors, no one wants to sit around and
not compete, especially when can have that burning aside of you.
So Um. And also it's a different it's a different
leadership structure, right, Pete Carroll is totally different from Bill Belichick.
(43:44):
There's two opposite ends of the spectrum. So depending on
which system you grew up in, sometimes those adjustments are
a little bit different for both sides. There is some
irony by the way, um in that you're telling me
how you don't love watching football, and last week you
did this whole presentation on how to watch football, right,
Like there's an iarity to that, isn't there therefore? So funny? Professor?
(44:06):
But I don't I know how to watch football. I've
watched millions of hours of films, so I know how
to watch the game and what to look for for
the game. Like you know, if I'm telling you like
it's too hot coming out, I know the game. So
if it's a mic and Sam blissing off here, and
then tight end has the hot route, he doesn't run
a hot route, the quarterback gets sacked. Most people complain
about the quarterback, Oh, he's holding the ball too long,
but they don't really realize that the that the tight
(44:27):
end didn't run his hot route, or if there's somebody
blistening off the short side, the corners listening off the
short side, the receiver doesn't run a skip route, and
the quarterback has to throw the ball out of bounce.
Everyone's like, oh, it's third down, but the right receiver
missed the blitz right or you know, different things like that,
so they at the quarterback points to the wrong mike
and he gets sacked. People blame the offensive line, but
it's the quarterbacks who I did. I died the wrong person.
(44:49):
So sometimes that will linebacker has to become the mic
so you can shift the defense to pick up the
ones you think they are coming. That's why I teach.
I teach that kind of thing. But it's a bear school,
so it really I mean at the end of the
of day. Yeah, I mean like like on some level
you're teaching, like at a rudimentary level, and then all
of a sudden you're starting spitting out football facts and
(45:10):
and if you're drinking a Dosek's, your head is spinning
kind of already. Um, that's the crazy part, right, Like
here you have here, you have a professional you know,
true professional education on a sport. And so I'm like, yeah,
you know, I don't really like it's not my creative side,
and there's no pull at all to bring you back
to the sport like in a in a teaching or
(45:31):
a coaching outside of doing some of this comedic stuff.
Uh um, kind of a role. No, I will only
go from a comedic standpoint because I think the game
is funny and it's like it's been serious for so
long that it's at the point now where it's just
kind of like there's actually some comedy. And they've got
men out there running full speed into each other and
people are cheering and shouting on them. You know, if
(45:51):
I was in the grocery store and I stiff form
a woman for the last box of Captain Crunch, everyone
would be so upset at me. But on the football field,
it's celebrated, so there's something like there's some irony and
met too. You know how violent the game is and
people wanted to see that violence happening, but charing and
rooting for the team to score points, like you know,
they're just really interesting, right yeah yeah, No, Look, and
(46:14):
you like, what's amazing about your career is you played
for like several iconic franchises in huge cities where I
do think you could kind of explore your creative side
during your your time off, but during your football time. Alright,
so just let's just go positive. The best part about
being Dallas Cowboys. What the best part of Dallas Cowboy
(46:36):
I mean, really, it was just learning from all the guys.
I mean you had to row oh is Andre Girard,
Flozel Adams, Like, I mean, yeah, Flozel, Flozell, everybody there,
Brady James Um, Terence Newman and Ken Hamlin. I played
with so many Maryan Barber who you know, Like all
these guys I was able to play with learn from.
I think it's the best part of the people, right, Like,
there's the football part is whatever, are you play football anywhere?
(46:59):
But the people you play with football with is what
I think most guys missed the most. It's not the game,
it's the people. Yeah, I don't know you hear that.
Marrion Barber's story kind of kind of sad. I guess
he threw himself in the car and living by himself
in an apartment and going running for all hours, like
kind of a weird deal. Yeah, I mean do you
think about it though, Like you look at the consequestions
(47:21):
and repercussions of actually playing the game, right, so people
actingly while I retire, I'm like, I get to a
point where the risk is not worth the reward, right,
It's like I could keep doing this, but if I
want to live my my family deserves a fully functional
husband and father. And if I really want to do
what I want to do for the rest of my life,
which is right and create, I need my mind. So
putting my mind on the line for what I want
(47:43):
to do for the rest of my life. I mean,
you're talking about a blip of time that average careers
during and a half years. I'll be able to create
until I die, right, Like, there's no question is there
any Is there any? Because because and like look, Draymond
Green is like you guys got that same kind of
by type. He's not as good as athlete as you are.
And maybe you know when you came out into mcdowald's
(48:04):
All American, there wasn't six six kind of hybridge three
four fives whatever. But if you think about it, like
had you gone the NBA rute, you'd still be playing
in the league. Any any thought to man, I was
football was great. I should have done hoop. No, not
really got last year when I was playing in a
year ago, when I played in the Drew League. I
have offered to play overseas basketball and um I thought
(48:28):
about it, but then I was like, why would I
want to go do that, because there's just another systematic
form of me being of creatively, of a creative oppression, right,
Like I just I don't want to have be a
system that oppressed my creativity, right, And that's what leagues do,
Like the NFL don't want you to be creative. The
NBA has a little more space for it, but it's
still you know, it's still skewed a bit. But um no,
(48:50):
I never really thought about that. I mean I did, like, yeah,
I remember, like I covered you, you were really talented
basketball player. And I just I just I just I
just I just want my best part of being in
Chicago bear are still best part about breaking Mike Dicker records? Good? Yeah,
most people don't realize I did that because they never
(49:13):
want to promote that. Yeah, we'll six sixty five catches
tied for eighth in the league among tight ends, second
highest in team history behind Mike did. But of course
you didn't broke Mike did his record, uh the very
next year, So um, okay, best part being but New
York Giants, the food and the people in the building,
the food, What about the food was so good, the foods.
(49:33):
But they had the best cafeteria. It was so good.
I used to go there on off days just to
eat food. All Right. The best part about being a
Patriot winning, I mean I think you played I played on.
Only been to the playoffs twice in my career, once
with the Cowboys and once with the Patriots, and I
wanted Super Bowl. So most of the teams that I
(49:56):
was on, what we didn't end up in a winning situations? Okay,
but the win was against the Falcons. You're down three? Truth,
did you think it was over? No? I never think
it's over. That's the part about being a losing team
for so long. What you mean you think you think
(50:16):
about being on losing teams is when you you'd have
the mentality of is over, we got no shot. Now,
when you're a losing team, you played hard to the
end because you know you've got a chance to You
don't want to be the reason why you get called out,
so you play regardless of what's going on in the game.
Like that's the part of being a losing team, Like
I would give everything I got for the entire game.
Martella's thanks so much for joining us. Thanks and asks.
(50:38):
Appreciate you joining us on the Doug Gotlip Show. Thank
you man. Appreciate the conversation too, No problem, I liked
it as well. Gottlib Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
All right, we got a lot to get to. Um. Let'
let's turn a baseball coming next. Justin Verlander and Clayton
Kershaw they're almost the same player, but when we look
(50:58):
back least as of now, we're gonna have completely different memories.
I'll tell you why next. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
pm Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the
I Heart Radio app Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
So Justin Verlander is um you know, like, look if
(51:20):
you go through the best pictures in the last twenty
years in baseball, right, So I I mentioned um, I
mentioned Max Scherzer, Right. Max Scherzer has three cy Young Awards,
three three Secing Awards. He has uh you know, I
mean we went through, as you know, two maculate innings.
(51:43):
Um Berlin only has one. He did win the Triple
Crown in two thousand of the pitching Triple Crown. I
mean two thousand, loved was amazing. Eight time All Star,
He's the five time I L. Sion Award winner. He's
he's led the league in wins, the American can wins
three times, A couple of notes, a few no hitters.
(52:05):
I mean, I would actually say that if you look
at it, if you're kind of honest about it, if
I said Verlander or Kershaw, let me let me ask you, Um, Ramos,
you're a big Dodger fan, and probably I should have
asked you this before I gave you the stats. Who
do you think has had a better career as of now?
As of now, any of those of the of those
(52:27):
three guys we like, even put Scherzer, Verlander or Kershaw,
I would say Suzer, Okay, um, what about you music?
Who would you say? Yeah, that's tough? Um yeah, I'd
say Serser. The only real differentiator for Serzer is that
(52:52):
he's won the cy Young Award in both leagues. Um,
that that's really it. He's two no hitters, too, immaculatings.
Seven time All Star, Verlander has one cy Young Award
um and Kershaw has three. Obviously, all with the Dodgers
(53:14):
hasn't had been since two thousand fourteen, they've all led
the league and strikeouts. They've all led the league in
the r A, although uh Kershaw has led it the
most in the r A five time n L E
r A leader, that which is kind of amazing. And
he was actually the m v P s There's never
been an m v P. I think Verlander was the
(53:35):
m v P in two thousand leven. Was he not?
I think he was, So they're they're all kind of
the same guy. Um, but I would guess that if
you know, but both Verlander and and Kershaw if they
both never won another World Series. Keep this in mind.
(53:59):
Verlander is fourteen and five and a l d S
and a LCS decisions. He's over Owen six in seven
World Series starts. Kershaw has only had four World Series starts.
He's one and two. Both have won the Triple Crown.
Um Kershaw has won no hitter. I don't really care
(54:19):
about no hitters. They've both been in eight All Star Games.
Um Kershaw did blow a save in Game five this season,
ultimately cost them the series against the Nationals. He had
an amazing gaming pitched in the playoffs against the Mets.
It was the seventh inning generally that would get him
against the Cardinals. But but Verlander, at the end of it,
(54:42):
you'd say, well, Verlander won a World Series. He never
won a World Series game, and he was not good
in either of these two were he was not nearly
to the level of normal Verlander in these last two
World Series starts this year. But he does have a ring.
He does have a ring, and he has been better
(55:04):
in the A L d S and a LCS at
the end of the day, But but this is and
if he wins another one, you know, even though he
didn't pitch well, it'll be hard for anybody to make
the argument that Kershaw was a better picture. Even if
Kershaw was a better picture, it's like the damn Marino
argument to guys that won Super Bowls. But is it
(55:28):
interesting that justin Verland he's not getting a pass. Nobody's
given him pass for not pitching as well in the
World Series. But if you were gonna say who's better
Kershaw Verlander, you go like, wow, Verlandard did win it,
like his team wanted. He didn't. All right, let's welcome
him in. He's the one and only. Daniel Jeremiah Move
the Sticks is the podcast you can also see him
on the NFL network here mine calls of the of
(55:51):
the l A Chargers. We had Mike Williams on earlier.
He didn't really give us much. Um I saw Anthony
Lynn said that just has been a lot of rhythm
to their offense. And it's a Charger fan, I would
I would agree. But what does this due to the Chargers?
As there's still a window, it's still a path for
them to get to the playoffs in the a f
C firing Ken wizzen Hunt on a non bye week, Um,
(56:14):
what's it due to the Chargers? Well, first of all,
it caught me off guard, Doug. I mean I told
people that you know, as a scout you try and
pride yourself on being a perceptive. But um man, I
I had had breakfast with the coach wizzen Hunt Sunday
before the Bears game just the other day, and we
sat and chattered for fifteen twenty minutes, and uh, I
(56:36):
never got any sense that there was anything like this
it was gonna happen. So uh clearly, you know they
have not run the football well. Everybody knows that that
needs to get better, that needs to improve. And um,
I would imagine that was probably a major reason why
they made the change. Now, Shane Styken is a really
really smart guy. We'll take over the play calling. Um,
Philip Rivers really likes him, so he'll take care of
(56:59):
the passing stuff, and then uh, coach Mayorrow, the offensive
line coach will kind of coordinate the run game. And
I mean I've heard Anthony Lynn talk today and it
sounds like, um, he'll definitely have some impact there and
some input on on what they're doing. But they've got
to they've got to get some sort of balance. I mean,
they don't need to run for a hundred fifty yards,
but they can't keep rushing for thirty yards in these
football games. That's just not sustainable way to win. And
(57:20):
then you got Melvin Gordon who held out. He hasn't
been right, plus he had the big fumble against Tennessee.
How much of this is is like, dude, this there
there is a there's training camp for a reason, like
you do need the reps you need? Do you need
to be sharp? How much of it is the play
calling in the offensive line having injuries? How much of
it is he just hasn't been sharp? Well? I think yeah,
(57:43):
I mean I think it's all those things. Um. I
think you know Melvine, you saw one run last week,
the you know, the nineteen yard run where you thought, okay,
that looks familiar. And one of the things is they
just gave him some space. They have not been able
to get much movement up front. And you know Russell
Kon coming back, um on four he had a little
calf injury, but when he when he was out there
last week, Man, it was it was a big difference
(58:05):
in the passing game. And I think you'll start to
see that payoff a little bit more of the running
game as you go forward. Um. But I think Melvin
is gonna get better. He's getting more of a field.
This is kind of getting to the end of his
training camp now. UM, so you'll see that. And man,
it's you know, watching the games every week doing these Doug.
I mean, I personally, I don't know that you can
get Austin neck. Were too many touches. Every time he
(58:25):
touches the ball, something good happens. It's it's really crazy,
and he hasn't gotten the ball, especially on some of
those jet sweeps here recently. Uh, we'll see Packers come
to town. Um, Packers start out the year looking like
the defense is great. Their offense was slow to come around.
Now their offenses firing on all cylinders and people are
questioning their defense. How good is the Packers defense? Well, look,
(58:49):
they were getting home early in the season. They were
getting a lot of pressure. They were getting home when
you were seeing you know that that whole defense had
totally changed. Um, when they don't get home, I still
think even though there's some young talent there and Kevin
King and um Jr. Alexander or two talented corners, but
you can find some space. So that to me is
the key for the Chargers. And I think that's where,
(59:09):
you know, keep an eye to see what happens with
Russell Russell o'coon if he's gonna play in this one,
because that if they can hold up and protect, I
do think there's some uh, there's some areas you can
attack down the field on this team. That's the voice
of Daniel Jeremiah Moved the Sticks is the podcast uh
And of course you can see him on the NFL
network here among calls of the l A Chargers games
(59:30):
Doug Gotlan show here on Fox Sports Radio. Are you
buying Minnesota now, Yeah, I'm definitely buying the Vikings. I
think when you look at the Saints, I think are
probably the most complete team in terms of, you know,
really no weakness at any position group. I think when
Kirk Cousins is playing like he's played over the last
three or four weeks, I think the Vikings are right there.
(59:52):
I mean, they can, They've shown now they can run
the ball with Aalvin Cook, They've been more explosive in
the passing game, they can rush the quarterback, and they've
got one of the more talented can daries. So, uh,
that is a really really good football team when they're
when they're throwing the football and getting some chunk plays
off that that play action that they've kind of found
their group a little bit here. And uh, I think
you gotta give a lot of credit to the to
(01:00:13):
the wide receivers. They complained, and right after they complained,
they start openings up a little bit and they've been
a completely different offense. You've gotten to see the entire
NFC North. I haven't asked you about the Bears. You
saw them in person last weekend in Chicago, and a
lot of people are pointing to Mitch Drabinsky saying he's regressing. Um,
how much of it is his play how much of
(01:00:34):
it is the play calling trying to protect them from him, Like,
what what's really going on with that bears offense? Well,
it's a chicken or egg thing, you know. Um, they
have no confidence in Troubinsky because of his performance, or
Mitchell Robinsky has no confidence because they don't believe in him.
I mean, I don't know. There's a trust issue there.
And there was the sequence at the end of the
(01:00:55):
first half, or you have a choice. You get two
throws from the one or you get one run because
there's no time ouse left twenty five seconds. If you
run it and don't score, you've got to spike the
ball and kick a field goal from the one yard line,
which is painful, or you can take two pops at
it and throw the football. And they didn't put it
in Mitch's hands. They ran it, they got stuffed. They
had to spike it and kick a field goal. And
(01:01:17):
then there was another scenario where their third nine and
they run kind of a like a sprint draw to
treat cohen Um at a nine yard line with a
chance to try and score. It's just there's no faith
in the quarterback, which has completely shook his confidence. But
I don't know if his confidences shook and then that's
why they don't have confidence in him, or if he
feels the fact that the head coach doesn't believe in him,
(01:01:37):
because that's clearly clearly what it looks like Dana Jeremiah
joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show. Um So, now
Joe Flaco has a really really really bad neck after
he called out the play. After he called out the
play calling. They own a ton of money, though, so
what do they do with Flacco as a mess? I mean,
that is a mess the most important position and foot
(01:02:00):
all and they just have not been able to get
it right. And um to me, they have not married
up the right coordinator with the right quarterback. I don't
think Joe Flacco is great at this point in time,
but I do not think this system fits him at all.
Um So, it was it was kind of a mess there,
and then the lack of aggressiveness. I I was kind
of refreshed to see Flacco, you know, show a little
(01:02:21):
bit of fire. It's something that you always kind of
wondered about him. But I agreed with him wholeheartedly. But
I don't know. I mean, I I think you're you know,
you're gonna have to hope that that Drew lock is
going to be able to eventually get healthy and take
this thing over. And I would imagine Flacco is kind
of serves in that mentor role, uh for another season.
But yeah, I'm with you, it's a that's a bad
spot to be in. Um. The Steelers they did win, right,
(01:02:46):
they have one and and James Connor was obviously was
a big part of it. You heard his shoulder there
at the end. Uh. What do you think they have
in Mason Rudolph. I don't think he's I don't think
he's the long term answer there. I think he's a
good backup. Um, I think he's uh, you know, look,
he's he's comfortable on on quick game and he's comfortable
(01:03:08):
trying to throw the ball on the outside over the top.
But that's you know that that's a small fraction of
what you need to do to play winning football consistently.
I don't know that he's gonna be that guy. I
just haven't seen it. So I thought you saw him
do some of the things well that he didn't in college,
and I think some of those same question marks still exists.
And um, you know, I I think if you know,
(01:03:29):
Ben Roethlisberger comes back with the defense they have next season,
their championship windows still open. Um. I think if Ben
Roethlisberger decided for some reason he wanted to write off
into the sunset, I think you're looking at a little
bit of a rebuild. Philadelphia goes in and beats Buffalo.
Now it was a tie game. They got a fumble
late in the first half and go down to score touchdown.
They broke it open, but it seemed like they figured
(01:03:51):
some things out. Is that that is that too big
a statement. They have a formula and we talked about
it every week. The you know, as a team, you
have to find your winning formulas. Diff it for everybody,
and the Philadelphia Eagles this year they've proven it when
they went on the road with the Packers and they
went on the road of the Bills. They just beat
him up. And and look, you talked about some of
the great players in this league. Jason Kelsey. Why his
(01:04:12):
brother Travis gets all the attention is, you know, one
of the best tight ends in football, Jason Kelsey. What
he does for this team in the run game is unbelievable.
He is so good and their guards Samulo and Brooks. Uh.
They mauled a really good Bills defense. So when you
do that, Carson is comfortable playing well. He was moving around,
Matson plays with his legs and it was kind of
(01:04:33):
just like bullyball. They just beat up a very physical
Buffalo team and that's going to be their formula going forward. Okay,
so Jamal Adams, the Jets basically said, hey, you can
have anybody is potentially available, with exception of Donald and
um quinn and Williams right their first round pick this year.
(01:04:54):
Jamal Adams hears about this, apparently gone into the Jets
last week and said he wanted to stay um. Then
today he has a little press conference where he says, hey,
I think of myself like Aaron Donald and Tom Brady,
and they don't Those teams don't take calls on Aaron
Donald and Tom Brady. Of course he doesn't know it's
his third year in the NFL. Doesn't want to meet
(01:05:14):
with Joe Douglas, who wanted to kind of clear the air.
You've worked in a front office, you know this league.
What what's your reaction to what Jamal Adams has to say, Well,
I think it's Look, I think it's a little bit
uh uh, it's a young player. I mean maybe the
word a little immature of how things work. But what
(01:05:35):
Joe did, what Joe Douglas did was exactly what any
smart general manager would do. Doug You've got a terrible
football team. You have a young quarterback that has no
offensive linement. They're going to be part of the future.
None not any five new offensive linemen. They have no corners,
they have no edge rushers last I checked. Those are
(01:05:56):
kind of the important pieces of good football teams. They
don't have any. So when you have assets on your
roster and teams call you and say, hey, what about
this guy, you listen because you have so many holes
to fill now that you want to trade him. No
is he gonna give him away? No, that's not. And
the Cowboys have been on record with what they offered,
which was a pretty good offer. It was turned down.
(01:06:17):
So that tells you that your organization believes in you.
But yeah, absolutely every team in the league's gonna listen. Uh.
When when you call and ask about players, that's your
job as a general manager. So I see absolutely nothing
wrong with the way Joe Douglas handled this situation. And look,
he went out and had conversations with Robby Anderson UM
(01:06:38):
and with Levian Bell. Levian Bell releases a video and
says he's on board. Joe Douglas is doing a great job.
I understand. It's it's the way the business works. And
then Jamal Adams is really upset and and he but
he also in that interview was weird. He mentioned how
he did want to go to Dallas, and he's from Dallas.
He want to play for the Cowboys. So I take
it a little bit of his he thought there was
(01:06:58):
a he there. Yeah, he looked like he looked like
a child. Like yeah, I think myself as Tom Brady
and Aaron Donald like great, nobody else does. Like it
understood he is. He is a great box safety. He's
you know, he's he's functioned as a linebacker. Um, he's
a really good player. But I mean, Doug, he's not
Derwin James. I mean it's not he's not on that level.
(01:07:21):
And he just doesn't get his hands on a lot
of football. And I look, he's a really good player.
Yes I'm not. I was around a Hall of Fame
safety with Ed Reid. Okay, ed Reid in his first
three years had twenty one interceptions. Jamal Adams has two.
He's a good player, but let's not me. He's not
Tom Brady's not Aaron Donald. I mean, come on, and
and when you say that out loud, it's like, this
(01:07:43):
reminds me of my dad was the late Rickman Jerry's
my dad was was with him. He was recruiting me
and he's like, yeah, you know, my dad said, you
know pastes just like Stockton and Rick Majerard said, Bob,
don't never say that out loud again. As what he
(01:08:03):
said that that was, um, we had a budge just um.
Daniel Jones real quick, real quick. All I can think of.
Now he may hit like yeah, you may you may
run like maze, but you hit like, yeah, that's that's
a that's a that's a really really uh really good. Um.
(01:08:26):
Deshaun Watson you saw him in person. Obviously he's had
he had some great place this past weekend, but now
they lose J. J. Watt and Deshan does have games
where he turns it over. He has he still holds
on the football too long. Like, are are we making
the mistake of the spectacular. Deshaun Watson is a great
highlight play, but but I don't know if he can
carry this whole team. Well he's had you know, we
(01:08:50):
were just talking about this son TV other day talking
about how you know where Aaron Rodgers is right now, um,
where he doesn't have to play you know, for lack
of a better term, kind of hero ball. You know,
where you just gotta make these you know, magical plays
for the Green Bay Packers to win games. Now, there's
still moments, and we saw in Kansas City where Rogers
can do that and can do the spectacular. Um. You know,
(01:09:11):
I was hoping as this team was kind of getting built,
and I think Larry Mutunsel has really helped this offensive line.
They're playing better, But I was hopeful that the Shawn
wouldn't have to do the high wire act for them
to win football games. But now without J. J. Watt,
obviously they moved on from Clowney. You've only got one
rusher with Merciless, who's gonna get all kinds of attention now.
So I think they're gonna find themselves and shootout because
(01:09:33):
their secondary is not very good and he's gonna have
to do that now that he's so talented that he's
he is capable of beating anybody in this league. But
it's just a tall ask for him to have to be,
you know, Superman every single game. And I think, you know,
for them to get where they want to go with
what they have on the roster right now and their limitations,
I think that's kind of what he has to do.
(01:09:54):
Awesome stuff. As always, DJ, love the pod. I love
you work even when I'm listening to my charger most weekends.
Find a way to lose the game they should rightfully win.
Thanks for joining us. Thanks. When will people finally realize
how good Anthony Davis is? Shannon Sharp thinks, so I'll
give you my thoughts next. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show week days at
(01:10:16):
three p m. Easter noon Pacific every day. This time
the Doug Gotlieb Show Fox Sports Radio, we get you
a piece of sound from either a Fox Sports One
show or a Fox Sports Radio show. We call it
say Anthony Davis had forty points tennis sists and actually
(01:10:37):
had that at the end of the third quarter last night.
Here's Shannon Sharp discussing the dominance of a d this
is what we knew he was capable of doing. And
I think the thing is, like you said, had he
been in New Orleans, he probably would not have played
because like I'm in New Orleans when you put up
these kind of number, because it's not like Anthony Davis
had at twenty game, either had a fifty nine twenty game.
(01:10:58):
But when you do that in the Purple and Gold,
it's something about when you do something as a big
and the Purple and Gold, it has meaning, it has value.
And now he played for something, he realizes that he
has a realistic chance at getting to winning an NBA championship.
I don't know deep down if he ever really thought
that skip, because you know a little when Goldstate had
(01:11:19):
that thing going on, you wouldn't coming out of the West. Okay,
So now he's I don't I understand what he's saying.
In general, I do think that at this point in
the season, when he was in New Orleans, every year
he was playing hard. Remember, Anthony Davis had hurt every year.
I mean there was a portion of the Pelicans failings
for the fact that he was hurt constantly they've been
(01:11:40):
injury Drew Holiday injury plague as he is now. I
mean even Zion Williamson injured. So that's part of the story, right,
let's just kind of be honest with it. But um, look,
Anthony Davis just he's the best player on that team.
He's the best player in that team. And I do
(01:12:01):
think there's something to the man. I felt like they
gave away a lot for Anthony Davis, right, he gave
away a lot. But Alonzo, Alonzo Ball was this team
would be great that they had the defensive presidence of
Alonzo Ball, and he's a better player, Um, brandon Ingram,
you gotta give up something. He scores. But there's a
(01:12:22):
reason the Pelicans haven't won, and they have all those guys, right,
that one Anthony Davis is better than all of these guys. Now,
the draft picks are what really kind of solidified the
deal for the Pelicans for the future, and that's where
I think the Lakers gave up too much. But it
is pretty obvious that that a guy who's clearly a
(01:12:43):
top five player in the NBA. And when I say
top five, I don't mean other people's top five, which
includes like ten guys top five, Janice, James Harden, Um,
Anthony Davis, Kawhi Leonard, and in the fifth one probably
(01:13:04):
Kyrie to be totally honestly, you probably Kyrie Irving. You
know you put Kyrie, You put Steph Kurry, Kyrie or
Steph Curry? Right those those are the five. I wouldn't
put Lebron in that group, and I don't think anybody
who's and what happens with Lebron. That's like saying Tom
Brady is the best quarterback in the NFL. He's not.
Just because he's won more Superls and one last year's
(01:13:26):
Super doesn't make him. It's not better than Aaron Rodgers
right now. You know. But when you put a legit
top five player in the sport on a basketball floor
and then you put him with a top five old timer,
you know who's still a top tennis dude? I think
(01:13:47):
it's a It's a better plan and one that's more realistic.
And last night he did it mostly from the freeth
the line, and I think he earned most of those
free those. It wasn't like the old days of Lebron
or Jordan or James Harden with their driving in and
drawing fouls playing a little bit like he played really
hard and you know, seven free throws. Uh, Game seven
(01:14:11):
World Series tonight. Who's fired up? I was, I must
feel like, you know, the these teams they do the chance,
they do the chance like in baseball, I'm fired up,
you've fired up. I'm pumped up. You pumped up? Yeah, music,
I'm fired up about this. And you know, I have
no infatuation at all with either of these teams, don't
(01:14:32):
care at all about these teams, but I'm fired up
about nights. I think in Game seven gets just about
anyone involved. And that's usually what regardless of who's playing.
I feel like, regardless of the sport, Like you may
not even be a big baseball fan, but if you
just tell people like, hey, Game seven World serious to night,
they're like, oh, I'll probably check that out. Yeah yeah. Well,
(01:14:53):
and and my son, now we're discussing, he's like, man,
baseball can be so boring and so long, and I
was like, yeah, but it can also be so intense,
you know, when you're just like, I mean, imagine being
up there in the mound and you're like, okay, I
have to throw a strike, but if I throw too
good a strike, the dude, is gonna hit a ball
that won't land. It's a hard thing. And I do
(01:15:14):
love the fact that sports is calling the game. He
gives you so much. Inside Aline with Joe Buck, Will
the Nationals and Max Scherzer take Game seven on the
road tonight. Richard Justice, long long time Major League Baseball

treat you like you to treat you? Man. We'll take
(01:16:03):
a little respite, if you will, from from football and
crushing Baker Mayfield for crushing and reporters, hopes and dreams
and talk some baseball. Man. The baseball has been really
really good World Series, first time ever all six games
(01:16:24):
have been won by the road team. Great and and
baseball has kind of been going on for a long time,
kind of sort of um, but this is it's it's interesting,
you know what in the short term max chers are
couldn't go in Game five because uh, because he had
(01:16:45):
these massive back spasms. Then he throws on flat ground
yesterday pronounced themselves good to go. Davy Martinez, his manager,
says he'll he'll, He'll pitch as long as his back
lets him. So now you have one of the best
pictures in the last twenty five years in baseball, a
three times Cy Young Award winner who's been a money
picture in clutch situations in the past on full rest
(01:17:09):
going against the Astros, and Zach Grinky, who is a
tremendous picture in his own right but has not been
many times the same picture in big postseason moments. Richard
Justice worked for MLB Network. Check out the Morning Lineup
podcast with Um that he's on. Remember Richard Justice used
to work for the Houston Chronicles, so he knows like
(01:17:30):
Astro's Baseball Chapter and Verse and kind of to spend
some time this year on Fox Sports Radio. It does
feel like last night, Strasburg's brilliance after the first inning
and the fact that he kind of got it together
because he was he was missing spots, he was overthrowing
and they were really I mean, they hit a they hit.
(01:17:50):
Uh they let off and hit a ball that hit
the hit the wall. That was the exit v lot.
If you saw this, Richard was a hundred and sixteen
miles an hour. They hit one out of the park
and then all re flyouts were to the various parts
of the warning track in left field and left center like.
It wasn't like there was just one home run. They
hit the hell out of him in the first inning
and then all of a sudden complete dominance. What changed? Yeah,
(01:18:15):
I think he walked back to the dugout after the
after the first sinning, and his pitching coach said, uh,
I think you better go in and look at some video.
You're probably tipping your pitches. You're doing something with your
glove that they can pick up your fastball versus your
breaking pitches. And he did that, and he noticed the
difference and he pretty much was in control after that.
I saw hitters like Jose Alto be chasing pitches um
(01:18:37):
that they don't normally chase, like one they asked us
at second and third and one out, and he got
Alto to chase a breaking ball, which you've never seen.
And I asked somebody about that, and they said, hey,
that's that's that's that curveball and that change up to
go with the fastball. That's as good as it gets.
And he's building a postseason resume. That's, uh, that's historically good.
(01:19:00):
I actually thought he was tipping pitches too, to be honestly, Like,
I could see his glove being held differently when he
was gonna throw a breaking ball when he's gonna throw
throw a fastball. Yeah, it was. It was really noticeable
after the first dating what he was doing with his glove.
He was doing a little butterfly thing and and just
to throw everybody off. So it's a little things, you know.
And the thing is they jumped him so fast it
(01:19:22):
was no time to pick it up. It was amazing. Um,
like replay didn't overturn the call, but we're trying to.
This is kind of what anti replay guys been saying, like, look,
it's an imperfect system. And I know Baseball came out
and basically said they got the call right. How is
that possible? Trade turner was in the Uh, what was
(01:19:45):
in proper position when the throw came? How how is
baseball trying to convince us that they got the call right? Well,
it's not even replayable, you know, when the judgment call
is not replayable. And they went The reason they went
over to the headsets was to find Joe Tory because
Joe Tory had told both managers before the game, if
you have a question that a rule is not to
be in not being interpreted correctly, Uh, you come to us,
(01:20:08):
You come find us and we'll get it straightened out. Um.
I think you're right. I mean well, and from my
point of view, they got the call right. Although what
would lead you to have pause is that Trey Turner
was right on the back. I mean, he was not
running where he was supposed to be, but he was
right on the bag. And Astro's manager A. J. Hinch
said just a minute ago, he said, I'm with Trey Turner.
(01:20:30):
I don't think that should have been called in that situation.
You know, Doug, what I liken it too, is Um,
if the rule of the spirit of the law, the
rule of the law was that they made was right.
But it's like calling a traveling on a routine play
in Game seven of the NBA Finals. You don't do
it well. It's like when somebody travels, you know, out
(01:20:50):
at mid court and they get to the basket and
you know, and it's like, well, he didn't travel with
the basket. He traveled way back there, and that did
that give him an advantage? I I wonder, I haven't
watched I know how fast trade Turner is. I wonder
if he takes that straight line approach every time he
hits a baseball, that that one I would have to
go go back and look, Um, all right, what about
(01:21:11):
Scherzer obviously didn't start in Game five because of the
back pitched on flat ground. How confident are we that
we're gonna see the real Max Scherzer tonight? I think
that's the X factor in this game. I mean I
saw him Sunday and he couldn't barely move his right arm.
He had a ugly needle mark in his neck. He
took a cortis own shot that told him it'd be
forty eight hours. But Doug to go from not being
(01:21:33):
able to get out of bed on Sunday without assistance,
not being able to put your shirt on, that your
wife helping you to throw in ninety seven miles on
our in Game seven of the World Series. That's a
big leap. He did throw yesterday. He did throw some
during the game. Uh, and he presumably he's better today.
He came in today and told David Martinez, I'm good
to go. So we'll see, you know, but game seven,
(01:21:54):
all hands on deck anyway, and then you're going against
Zach Ranky, who somehow is kind of getting over show
out here, right like right, like okay, first of all,
like he's an incredible field, it feels his position incredibly
well cy Young Award winner, and like he's pitched brilliantly
in this series. He wasn't you know, only four and
(01:22:15):
two thirds, but he pitched. He pitched really really well.
Um pitched well against the Yankees, not you know, not
great in the first start, better than the second start. Obviously,
What are our thoughts on on Drinky in this series?
My my audience is that one of these pictures, um
probably and we saw it last night with the Strasbourg
versus Verlander, one of these pictures are gonna take control
(01:22:36):
of the game, and that happens now. You know, I
think the first half of the game favors the Nationals
if ser is sers er um, but the second half
of the game clearly favors the Astros of a much
better bullpen. Yeah, Grinky is getting overlooked because you know,
it's because Max Scherzer is one of those willows read
type stories. I mean, if he can do this after
where he was Sunday would be remarkable. But Zach Grinky,
(01:23:01):
the Astros guy Zack Grinky at the trade deadline because
they thought, we have two great starters, we need a
third guy for a situation like that. The Nationals have
won three of the four starts by Garrett Cole and
Justin Verlander. Um, let's see if they can beat um
Zach Grinky in Game seven. What does it say about Verlander?
His struggles in the World Series two D and fifty
(01:23:21):
eight and the third innings he pitched in sen He
paid two very solid starts for the Astros. He hasn't
gotten a designated win and a lot of that in
play ad r I came from early early in his
career with the Tigers. But last night it looked like
he was a tired guy he had, I mean, he
was stressed to get through five innings and they slapped
a couple of balls out of the park on him.
(01:23:43):
You know, it's like with other guys. Your your resume
is what it is. He's going to the Hall of Fame,
but this is a part of it. He's not the
most proud. Haven't said that in seen his two starts
against the Yankees and the LCS for the Astros basically
put the Astros in the World Series are so he
his postseason resume is good. His World Series he would
(01:24:04):
like it. He would like that final brick in the
wall to win, and it looks like he's not gonna
get it this year. All right. So there's a there's
this group of them right there, Suzer, there's ver Lander,
and there's Kershaw. Obviously Kershaw has been in a couple
World Series but hasn't performed that well and hasn't won one.
Verlanders won one, but we we discussed kind of the numbers. Uh,
(01:24:25):
And then there's Suzer, who's won three. Cy Young's won
it in both the both both leagues. Like if he
throws a gem tonight, does he become the signature picture
of this era? Wow, that's a great question. I think
you have that conversation. Those three guys you mentioned are
that conversation, and Strassburger is right on the verge of
(01:24:45):
putting himself in that you consider he led the led
the led the National League innings. But yeah, and this
is a signature moment. You know, this is when legends
are born. You you do it in Game seven of
the World Series. You you you you know Kirby Puckett
once you gold to his Twins team I it's hop
on my back boys if you do that. If that's
the role he plays tonight, Yeah, he becomes that guy.
(01:25:06):
Might already been that guy anywhere. You mentioned strasburg Um, Hey,
he was amazing after the first inning. We haven't mentioned
Bryce Harper, who was, of course on this team, had
many opportunities to resign with this team late and did not.
And and look, you know the hitting it has been
when the pitching has been nasty, it doesn't really you know,
that hitting doesn't really matter, like Bryce Harper doesn't really
(01:25:29):
affect that. On the other hand, it does say something
that Bryce Harper's on this team and they won't go away,
doesn't it. Yeah, you can't avoid that conversation. From a
practical XS and OH standpoint. They had outfielders ready to go.
The Ajuan Soto is obviously a great player. They have
the twenty year old Victor Roebus, who is a really
good player. Adam Eaton is a very good player last
(01:25:51):
Night night, right, and they took that money and gave
it to Patrick Corbin. Now, the other side of that
is what he meant in terms of marketing in the
face of the franchise and all that. And it's interesting
what's happened to their clubhouse. They added Annibal Sanchez, Zuki
uh Brian does your yahn Gomes and you put that
(01:26:13):
that group of guys with Howie Kendrick and Ryan Zimmerman
suddenly insures or you suddenly have a groom. It's very
mature and what does that? What does that do when
you're nineteen and thirty one? You keep going, you don't
give up. That's the most remarkable thing about the Nationals.
Okay um Davy Martinez has never been in this this
situation a j has um so and like, look, these
(01:26:36):
are the decisions that that we all, especially those of us,
have been Richard Richard Justice joining us MLB network. You've
covered it for years, so you know how completely unfair
it is for the rest of America to parachute in
and make a statement about Davy Martinez his competence based
upon does he leaves shares are in does he not
leave shars are in but from a baseball perspective and
(01:26:58):
a guy who follows it and has a Hall of
Fame vote and knows the sport cold who's generally seeing
like is David by the book? Guy? Is he? Or
is he going by feelings? Like? Is he going by
the computer? What? What? How's he making his decisions as
to what he does a pitching changes. I think the
history is he makes it by the book maybe a little. Uh,
(01:27:19):
there's a criticism of him. It would be that, on
the other hand, they kept it together and kept going
when they were as down as you could be, and
he was reading about how he should be fired every day,
So you can't you can't underestimate that part. And he's
done a great job. This is gonna be fun. This
is gonna be really fun to a guy who's uh,
you realize that the Astros have screwed it up for
(01:27:39):
the rest of sports, right, like because you lived it,
because you know it, Like I was trying to educate
people eleven through the Astros tanking, and I know that
all these pictures weren't acquired during that era, that they
weren't draft picks, but their dominance in the sport is
something that everybody else is like, well it works in baseball,
why wouldn't work for for us? Uh for for somebody's around.
(01:28:01):
How bad was it during that three year stretch? Well
that's the other side of it that you have to
look at with open eyes is that your TV ratings
go to zero. They had distribution problems with their network,
but even the houses that were getting the games zero,
you have nobody in the stands and you have to
work like heck to get those people back. They've been
borderlined drawing three million in the last two years, and
(01:28:21):
you have to do everything, not just win, but you
have to have a team with George Springer and Jose
Altuve and guys. Alex Grabman, guys. You want to come
see I mean there is I hope everybody that goes
to this tanking thing understands there is a huge price
to be paid and sometimes it's a long time recovering
great stuff. Richard Justice, MLB Network enjoy Game seven. Can't
(01:28:42):
wait to see who comes out on top. It's going
to be fun. I know. These are the type of
things you you worked a whole year, you want to
be rewarded with a fantastic finish. You have, in fact
to earn that reward. Thanks for joining us. Thank you
all right. Richard Justice joining us in the Doug Gottlieb Show.
He works for the MLB Network. Check out the Morning
Lineup podcast Beggar Mayfield has like, Yeah, your dad always
said there's a two roads you can choose, just an
(01:29:04):
easy road in the tough road. He always chooses the
hard road. I'll prove it to you next. Be sure
to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show
weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio. Ah app, this
is not good, not good, not good. Do you guys
(01:29:24):
remember Josh Hamilton's man, He's talking about a tough life
right like he was. He was about addicted to crack
and then his he was crashing in his grandma's like
mobile home and she basically locked him in a room
and gave him a bible and told him to come clean,
you know, to get clean. Former Texas Rangers star of course,
(01:29:47):
played for the Reds, played for the Angels. Josh Hamilton's
arrested today on third degree felony charge of injury to
a child. According uh to Jason Allen of CBS, eleve
in Hamilton's was um was at the courthouse at two
pm to turn himself. Indikes, not what you want to hear.
(01:30:10):
Only dollar bond was set. That sounds sounds like something
with his X and some sort of accusations. It obviously
reads awful and we hope that he's nothing happened to
a kid. But I was actually just thinking the other day,
whatever happened to Josh Hamilton's. Whatever happened to Josh Hamilton's
(01:30:34):
It's like the greatest comeback story ever? And then of
course he just had multiple relapses and that was really
became super sad. All right, let's get you to the
sound of the day. This is what everybody's talking about now.
For the record, I've defended Baker Mayfield as a leader
(01:30:55):
because everybody I've talked to you said, and I like
that Baker Mayfield. But I've also pointed out that football
people in my own eyes have told me he's not
a great athlete. He doesn't have a great arm, he
has good but not great feet, and though very very bright,
sometimes he thinks he knows a little bit too much.
Considering he hadn't played that much in the NFL, and
(01:31:15):
this constantly taking on every fight, he's just tiring, tiresome.
So he was meeting with the media earlier today and
here's his exchange with the reporter. There was a lack
of on there's a penalty, so we're negative yards, so
(01:31:38):
there was a lot of time between snacks. Well, when
the penalty happened, then we're behind the chance. No, no, no,
stop saying, but I just told you the clock was
running and we had a penalty. Do you want to
give them the ball back? No, you don't play, you
don't know it. That's just plain and simple. Was I
happy with the drop? No, we didn't score points. It's
the dumbest question you could ask, what Jesus throwny? That's
(01:32:00):
that's Tony Grassi, who's the reporter from a fifty W
K and R. And what happens is I have no
doubt that he's probably always there. Baker clearly doesn't respect
his football knowledge. Um, and I don't know why Tony
(01:32:20):
would ask him, were you happy with that drive? With
any intention other than to trigger some sort of sarcastic
response that said, like, dude, you don't have to fight
every fight. You don't have to fight every fight. It's
like you only here's a perfect example. Baker Mayfield should
(01:32:44):
take the Floyd Mayweather approach. Take the flod Mayweather approach. Remember,
Floyd Mayweather wouldn't fight um, won't fight anybody that he
can't beat. You know, that's really it. He fought, he fought.
(01:33:05):
Remember when he fought Cannello, Cannella wasn't ready. Canello wasn't ready.
Cannella was up and coming, and it was way too
early for Cannello. When he fought Manny paci Ow, it
was like, forget about the fact Manni Packy had a
bad shoulder. It was like three or four years too late.
I mean he finally we fought Oscar de la Hoya.
(01:33:27):
Oscar de la Joya was past his prime. Man, This
dude is a genius because he only from he fought
Sugar Shane Mosley, Like dude, Sugar Shane Mosley was washed
by the time Moseley pacquiow, Hell, I mean, what what's
the last time we saw Floyd Mayweather? You know Victor
(01:33:47):
Ortiz Codo, Uh, he fought the Ghost Guerrero could be
but the last time, the last time we saw him fight.
He fought Connor McGregor, and not only did he fight
a guy who has never been in a boxing match
in boxing, but then he led Connor McGregor just wail
away the first three rounds. Why because the only chance
(01:34:08):
he had to lose to Connor McGregor was walking into
a left hand, and he wore out Connor McGregor so
that even if he caught him with one when he
was deciding to go offensive, he couldn't hurt him. Floyd
Mayweather's genius is it this one thing. Once he got
the power, he only fought fights that he couldn't lose.
(01:34:29):
You look at you, You look at Baker Mayfield, Doug
Otlieve show, Fox Sports Radio, and man, we're so happy
to have this guy on our team. Brock Heward. Of
course you can hear him call uh college football games
on FS one. He's got his podcast up in Seattle. Uh,
I got a bunch of things to get to. But
Baker Mayfield going the like, Uh, you don't know, because
(01:34:53):
you don't play with a local reporter having a having
a tough season even though they have a a very
light stretch. Uh here getting ready for the end of
the season. What's your reaction to Baker. I just wonder
if this this dude's gonna continue this way for this
season in his career, Like I I just him, you
(01:35:14):
know that. I think there are a lot of people
so excited going into this year and so thrilled with
having a quarterback that actually says what he feels and
and is honest and puts it all out there and
is different than everybody else. And I think you realize, yeah,
a lot of guys could do that, but they've got
the discipline not to. They know there's no upside. I've
(01:35:36):
watched a guy in this market for eight years play
behind one of the worst offensive lines in the history
of the league, with no run game a couple of
years ago, that being Russell Wilson, and never once, never, ever, ever,
once making an excuse, never once pointing blame anywhere other
than himself. Teammates called him not black enough, teammates would
question his accountability, and was coached too hard on him,
(01:35:59):
and never, never, ever, ever, he knew the address to
the high road at all times he takes it and
because of it, he's just got the utmost level of
respect from his peer. So I'll be curious if this continues.
There was a fascination with a QB that was willing
to you know, have have no muzzle and no filter.
And I think we're seeing, uh, you know why the
(01:36:21):
other way? The Standard for so many decades has paid
dividends for so many Um they had thirteen penalties coming
off of a bye week. Now I looked New England
can make anybody look bad. We know what they did
to Sam Donald. But I mean, I we we're all
looking at the schedule, like Miami Cincinnati twice. You know, boy,
they're gonna get some Arizona, They're gonna get some wins.
(01:36:43):
I'm sitting here, sitting there. What leads us to believe
that they can be discipline enough to beat the bad teams,
let alone the good ones? Hey, Doug, how good was
your first radio show? Not? Great? Right? I mean, do
you get a little bit better with experience? You understand
like what it takes and there's no substitute for it.
I don't care what you're doing, if you're doing a
(01:37:03):
game broadcast to radio show, if you're a quarterback, or
if you're a head coach or play caller. Right when
guys haven't done it We talked earlier this year about
Michigan right in the learning curve for their first time
play caller, and he's learned pretty quickly. He's learned that
the strength of the Wolverine team is a run game
and to lean into it and to play that way
with this quarterback. And and you know, Josh Gaddis has
(01:37:24):
learned this season. He's climbed the curve. And I think
Michigan the beneficiary of that. I think you've got a
first time head coach who was never a play caller,
never a play caller, thrown into that position. Would you
expect I mean, this is and and unfortunately, I think
they're in Cleveland. You're not seeing any growth up the
learning curve. So yeah, I'm not really surprised to see
(01:37:44):
their struggles, to be honest with you, Doug Uh Okay,
let's let's let's get to that Michigan team. They dominate,
Notre Dame, dominant, and the game should have been tied
against Penn State. Um, look, I know they haven't. They
don't have a big win on the road. What's your
sense of Michigan where they are now? I think, for
(01:38:04):
Jim Harbaugh's sake, this better be the right higher and
you better keep consistency and continuity offensively with him. But
that's been that's been the biggest challenge, you know, as
I've looked at this thing over the years, as you
just can't go through and to me, that that's been
always been the biggest red flag. It's just the number
of coaches that you go through on that side of
the ball and you and you just wear sin and
(01:38:24):
you just burn those bridges, and it's just you know,
that's that's not not good. You need a level of consistency.
And as I said earlier, I think that, you know,
I think Gaddis has found some of that over the
course of this season. I think their poise for a
pretty good November. I think they're hardened from some of
their failures and humbled a little bit earlier in the year.
And I still think Jim Harbaugh is the right guy
(01:38:45):
for that job. You just got to keep some continuity
on his offensive staff. Uh. We're waiting to see if
to a plays we saw L s U challenged. What
do we learned from L s U and the win
over Robber? Yeah, we learned that the two is gonna play.
Doug don't kid yourself. You know that in a week
and a half he's gonna play. The timing could not
have been more perfect to make sure he didn't have
(01:39:07):
to play a week ago and not gonna play. Obviously
with the b y E this weekend, he will play.
I don't think there's any question about that. And you know,
I see an L s U team that's got just
some stops and starts and some incredible talent in and
places I put on their tape. I had Texas last weekend,
so I watched that L s U Texas game from
earlier in the year, which was a phenomenal game, but
(01:39:29):
it showed you some of their inconsistencies, and I would
not have them as the number one team in the country.
I know they've got a great resume. I know they've
got some quality wins and including that Texas win and
in the Auburn win, and you know, real quality wins
on the resume. But Ohio State's best team in the
country that I have seen. Uh, both with the eye test,
the videotape test, the person test, the stat test, anything
(01:39:50):
you want, they're the number one team in the country,
the most balanced team. Yeah, I think L s U
UM you know, still has to prove that to me,
that level of consistency that frankly they've never had in
their program. And they're going up against the titan of consistency.
How how far behind is Penn State? Not to not
(01:40:10):
too far behind? Uh? You know I would have said, um,
you know, maybe even a month ago, I said, yeah,
they're they're nice, man, They've got some speedy dudes right
in your basketball world. They're long, they're athletic, they get
up and down the court. But they don't have they
don't have the point man, but they don't they don't
have that difference maker. But over the last month, I've
kind of I've kind of warm to it. I've seen
(01:40:33):
this team that's got a little bit of resolve, this
team that, by the way, obviously a different quarterback and
a different tailback. But it's it's once some big games
and you know, it's there's one some New Year's six
Bowl games and and it's you know, James has built
this thing there and they're they're steadier, and they're tougher
than I thought they would be a month ago. And
I think because of it, it's going to be, you know,
(01:40:53):
a dogfight to the very end. I tend to agree
what happened to Wisconsin. Yeah, they just they don't have
the dudes, right, they don't have the dudes. I think
we played this game a couple of weeks ago when
I was on with you, and I don't know if
you do this when you um and it's probably a
little bit different to do a basketball game than a
football game where I've got two starters and you know,
(01:41:14):
I don't know how many forty or fifty different guys
that can play on a roster, and you've got like
five to ten. But bottom line, like you go on
the playground, Doug, and there's twenty two starters. And when
I did the Northwestern Ohio state game, out of those
twenty two starters, do you know how many Northwestern Wildcats
I would have picked zero? I would have picked zero.
I would have taken Patti Fisher and Joe Gaziano their
(01:41:36):
middle linebacker ends and they would have been in their rotation,
but they wouldn't have started. And the Buckeyes and the Badgers.
Out of twenty two, would I have taken more than
three Badgers four? Maybe an old lineman or two, you know,
maybe a toss up between the two tailbacks, maybe a
receiver for Wisconsin, but that's about it. And what do
(01:41:57):
you expect when it's, you know, nineteen to three, when
it's only two to zero. And you know, I think
we saw that in Wisconsin. Is unbelievably tough. They're they're
well coached, Paul Chris, it's perfect for Wisconsin. But you know,
that is an elite, an elite Ohio state team. That
and I know you talked to Clatt and you know,
I know you've watched it and you've seen it this year.
(01:42:17):
It's different. It's it's a team that is run by
the locker room, it's run by the players that that
edge comes from within. And I think it's super healthy
and I think they are just locked and loaded. And
good luck to anybody that's gonna line up across from him. Yeah,
it's it's it's pretty pretty amazing stuff. Doug Otlieb Show
here on Fox Sports Radio, I do I do want
(01:42:38):
to ask you about some West Coast teams. Um Oregan
obviously lost a game early in the year to to
to Auburn. If if they went out, do you think
they belong you know? If if no, no, no, I
don't I don't think so. I mean, Auburn is good.
I think they'll lose another game, and hopefully not too
(01:42:59):
for Oregon's sake. You know, you play a Washington State
to the final seconds, you gotta kick a field goal, goodwin.
You play Washington and it's it's got nine new starters
and true freshman and a bunch of a bunch of spots,
and it's down some personnel, and you know, it takes
a fourth quarter comeback. Great wins, I mean absolutely quality wins.
Take nothing from them. Uh, you know, we'll see if
(01:43:20):
they can go down to SC. They should win, but
they're not going to run away from SC. It'll be
a fourth quarter game. And you know, those are all wins.
I don't diminish any of them. But you just stack
them up with what Cleanson and Ohio State and Penn
State and these teams and what they've done too many
inferior opponents and they dominated them. And you know, both
from I think a strength of schedule, the eyeball test,
(01:43:42):
the margin of victory. Yeah, like, I just don't think
there's gonna be enough there now. Having said that, I
I love to see him run the table. I'd love
to see the Futah team that I'm watching this week
and see him for a second time, and we'll call
the game Saturday. With the Huskies, I'd love to see
them run the table because frankly, a top ten matchup,
you know, maybe a five verses seven for the Pack
twelve and the title game would be exactly what this
(01:44:05):
conference out West needs in that championship weekend. No, I
I agree with you. I just it's been so long
since they've been it does feel so. I mean, you know,
sc obviously getting left out a couple of years ago
with the two losses, but I thought they belonged. But
since then, it's been even even those U Dub teams
didn't feel like the best representative uh in in that
(01:44:26):
deal and um, and so you know, it's it's hard
to get people to take the PacTel seriously. It is now.
You know, it's interesting with this Utah team, and it's unfortunate.
Their quarterback got banged up, Tyler Huntley, and he's persevering
and he's sucking it up and he doesn't want to
miss one one more game after he's missed eight the
last two years. But you played that little playground game
(01:44:47):
with Utah and they're probably the one team that if
you play that game against Penn State, or you play
it against Wisconsin, or you play it, maybe not Ohio
State because that's the cream cream cream, but you played
against a bunch of teams and guess what they got.
They got a first round end, they got a first
round nose tackle, they got a mid round middle linebacker.
They got a couple of safeties that are probably late
(01:45:07):
round guys. Like They've got some dudes on that defense
and seven seniors. That's the number one rush defense in America.
That's the number four defense overall, that has no weakness
and it's got a lot of guys. A ton of
people would like you. Oh, by the way, they're running
back that's number one in America averaging five yards after contact.
And Zack Moss. They're the team that actually has a
(01:45:30):
lot of dude that could I think line up against
a bunch of these teams we've talked about and hit
him right in the mouth and play a pretty physical, feisty,
nasty four quarter games. He's brought here. Everybody got brought.
I've got those utes up here in Seattle on what
will be a glorious Saturday, afternoon on Fox Man canna
be about fifty five and Sonny a packed house and
(01:45:52):
we'll see whether or not Chris Peterson can get a
top ten win. That the folks here are clamoring four
and if you talk, can get over the hump because
he's he's to beat him the last four ns and
they need to get this one. Man. You get to
sleep at home. Get to sleep at home. That has
been good to me. Bro This is two home games
have been out West most of the year. Like you
can tell, can't you. I'm energized. It's almost November, and
(01:46:14):
I feel they also not doing morning radio anymore that
that helps to that it's almost Yeah. What did you
say at the bottom of the hour there about your
your boy with the clippers. He's got load management. I've
had like load management on my schedule this year, so
I'm good. I can do this anytime you want. Careful
what you say, because we will ask for Brock here
from Fox Sports covering college football and of course got
(01:46:37):
his own up, got his own pod uh up in
up in Seattle. Brock, great stuff. Thanks for joining us, alright, Doug,
see man, he's the best, the best. We'll get you
ready for a Game seven of the World Series. Make
our picks, plus run down everything you missed with the Press. Next,
be sure to catch the live edition of the Doug
gott Leap Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific.
(01:46:57):
Doug Gotleip Show rolls on Fox Sports Radio. Games Havan
is here. We'll give you our predictions. Sure to go
wrong in a bit, but first let's get to the press.
The press. The press is ding by Little Caesar's, where
you get a large, thin crust pizza topped right to
the edge with cheese and pepperoni. Only six participating Little
Seesar's locations plus tax whre applicable. Dann Buyer, give me
(01:47:20):
the press. We're kind of build up to the World Series.
Will start with a couple of notes from the NBA.
No Kauai Leonard tonight for the Clippers out against the
Jazz because of load management, while the Hawks got good
news on trade young ankle injury not serious, didn't need
an m R. I he's not gonna play against the
Heat tomorrow, expected to be re evaluated on Monday. I
(01:47:43):
was I'm not a Hawks fan, but when I heard
that bad I didn't see it, but I had hurt.
You know, tweeked about it. I just thought, darn it.
You know, in an NFL he was, well, he's playing,
so he was playing so well to start the year.
And when you're a shooter, as you know, you were
your shooter. When you play it, it does, it does
affect you. It affects you a great deal. So, um,
(01:48:07):
I it's gonna be interesting to see how he how
he comes back. You know, he's a guy. He's not
a great defensive player, but incredibly skilled offensive player. I mean,
obviously if you're the Hawks, you want to be more cautious,
but everything runs through Trey Young. Washington Redskins were hoping
to get Trent Williams on the practice field today as
he ended his holdout yesterday and reported to the team
(01:48:29):
and then interimed coach Bill Callahan told us this. Unfortunately
today he couldn't practice. He did not pass the physical.
There was discomfort with his helmet in the fitting of it.
And we'll take trent situation day to day. Unique Well,
it wasn't good news for him. No, not good news,
(01:48:51):
just weird news, right, crazy crazy news, weird news. I
couldn't get his helmet on a good well, remember he
had that he had like a growth or something in
his head that he had to have removed. Yes, so,
I mean, but that was a long time ago. Anybody
our age or older had helmet helmet discomfort in eighth
(01:49:14):
grade football where the pad was just marks. Yes, yes,
it was NonStop helmet discomforts. Jamal Adams yea refusing to
speak with Joe Douglas. I haven't. I'm not ready to talk.
That's just why I'm at would sometimes it's best to
just kind of let it cool down and then when
you're ready to talk and have a have a conversation.
(01:49:35):
We definitely can in and I believe that, you know,
we definitely will, but I'm not ready to talk about it.
He's so in his feelings. He also in the same
statement said, you know, I I consider myself like Tom
Brady and Aaron Donald. They don't take calls on Tom
Brady and Aaron Donald like well, first of all, they
probably would take calls on them, like you know, like,
(01:49:56):
all right, what are you gonna give us for Aaron Donald?
Doesn't mean they make the trade much like you. Second
of all, no one thinks you're Tom Brady and Aaron Donald,
except for you please don't ever say that aloud again,
Chief said. Coach Andy Reid talked about the status of
Patrick Mahomes for the near future. We do enough stuff
where he's gonna move around. You can get a chance
to see, you know, he's moving pretty good. You guys
(01:50:17):
got to see that before a game. So he was
out running around. So but and then I was I
talked with the communicate with the doctors, Chief said the
Vikings on Sunday, and Reid said that Mahomes will do
a little more at practice today than he did last week. Yeah,
he wants to play. He's gonna play. Yeah, if he's available,
he got I think he gotta. He gotta let him
(01:50:38):
do it. Be goes what receiever. A. J. Greene says
that he wants a long term contract from the team
and if that doesn't happen, they should let him go.
He practiced with the team for the first time today
since injuring his ankle in July. He said a lot
of stuff I like A J. Green you know, he
he said, you know, he and Andy Dalton are super
super tight, and he was bothered by Andy Dalton was
(01:51:00):
it was the bigger kind of interesting statement you know, like,
why didn't you tell me less than three hours before
the end of the trade deadline so I could have
found a home to go to. Yeah, this here's here's
some Dalton here as well. Um, now, how you thought
the birthday was gonna go? But it's an unfortunate situation.
(01:51:21):
You know. I don't agree with it, but Jack's making
the decisions, and so I'm gonna do my part. I'm here, Um,
I'm gonna help right out the best I can. It
makes no sense to me Ryan being Ryan Finley like
I don't, I mean, at least like I hate. He's
not the reason. He's not the reason that we're not winning. Okay,
(01:51:43):
so why make the change? Well, what's what's the point?
I could confirm this that Dalton wished to start week
ten for his birthday and that it's not going to
come true. So he must have told somebody and that
ended up ruining it out for the Bengals who are
in eight. Yeah he got he had benched on his birthday. Yes, yes,
(01:52:06):
life comes at you fast. Make a wish. I want
to start in week ten. I want to start week now.
He blows out the candles. Uh, game seven tonight. So
the Fall Classic, Nationals and Astros on Fox seven thirty
(01:52:27):
Eastern time. I know we're gonna get to our picks,
but I've got to tell you these particulars. Matthew McConaughey
gonna yell out the playball call prior to first pitch tonight.
The ceremonial first pitches will be given or thrown by
Jeff Bagwell and Craig Visio. Nationals. Everybody's available, even Stephen Strasburg,
but they'd have to figure that out. According to Davey Martinez,
(01:52:48):
a j hip says, everyone on the Astros is available
except Justin Verlander, who pitched last night, and one other Nationals.
Note Young Gome's gonna catch tonight. Kurt Suzuki scratched from
the starting lineup as he had been out because of
a hip flix or strain. Yeah, it should be a dandy,
should be fun, should be a lot. I mean, Game
(01:53:08):
seven baseball is just Amazon. That's the pressed bag it
out there. Impressed. That was the press. Ra must make
your pick. I like the Houston Astros tonight, Easton Astros
better bullpen? What about you there, Ryan Music. I haven't
been wrong once this series. Let's go with the Astros
have been right once this series. All right, what about
you there, Dan, But I'm not I'm going to say
(01:53:31):
that the Nationals not only win Juan Soto your m
v P. He made a throw in the first inning,
right and when uh when they tagged up the score
and he was from the wall three one hop obviously
wasn't in time, but man is he impressive. Nationals win.
We start to discuss Max Scherzer as the as the
(01:53:52):
best picture of this era, and that's with ver Lander,
that's with Kershaw and of course Bryce Harper being elsewhere
also part of the story. But we shall see. There
has not been a home team win yet in the series.
Is the first time ever through six that's happened. Enjoy
the Baseball on Fox. David box Tier from the Packers
will join us tomorrow. Still got live show
