Doug thinks Jerry Jones coming to the defense of head coach Jason Garrett after criticizing him for losing to the Patriots is simply performing some damage control before their Thanksgiving Day game against the Bills. He also argues Clemson is the team in college football right now that no one else wants to play. Plus, Stephen F. Austin head coach Kyle Keller joins the show to talk about their historic upset of Duke.

of the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Boom,
What Up America, Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio. I
hope you're having a great day. If you're driving to
Thanksgiving dinner, remember their family. You cannot do harm to family.

(00:46):
They've harmed you in the way of you that you
are raised. You cannot do harm to family. Physical harm
would be bad. Be bad. Um eight seven seven nine nine,
foxes the phone number, I don't know, filling goofy Ready, hungry.
I've been starving myself little morning yoga to get me
ready for the show. All of these things have prepared

(01:09):
me for this very moment moment um. Jerry Jerry, Jerry,
Jerry Jones. Jerry Jones can't help himself. He said what
he said Sunday after losing to the Patriots, and since
then he's done everything in his power to backtrack. Here's
Jerry Jones earlier today on the NFL network. Let me

(01:31):
tell you, no one in this country has earned the
right to say, I'm a Jason Garrett man more than me.
I am his man. And we want the very same thing,
And that's for our players to play at their very best,
and we won't his staff to coach at their very best.

(01:52):
I am a Jason Garrett man. I am his man.
I am his man. Isn't it supposed to be he's
my man, my man, right? Like otis my man? Right?
That was that you're supposed to He's my man. I
am his man, I am his man. It was just weird,
just awkward when old people try and sound a little

(02:13):
bit more hip. I am his man. I am his man.
I don't really. Yeah, but are you hit? Are is
he your guy? Oh? Wait, that's a better question. Look,
I think that's pretty clear. There's two things that are
going on here. Um, he's both settings himself up maybe

(02:38):
three things. He's The first thing is it's pretty obvious
damage control. It's it's like the deal that Trump does
when he says something he shouldn't say. And then you
come out at the next press conference and you pretend
like none of that happened. You say the exact opposite
who said that you did? Oh, I said no such thing. Ye,
yes you did. And then you would start like thinking,

(02:59):
you start questioning your yourself like, yeah you did, you said,
I'll repeat it back to you, like, Nope, I don't
know what you're talking about. It's right here in the transcript.
You said, we got out coached. We consistently got out coach.
We knew we were going to get out coach. You
did say that, didn't You don't know, We're just talking
about Nope. I'm a Jason Garrett guy. Well then why

(03:21):
do you keep saying your team is getting out coached? Right? Why?
Why does that happen? Explain that to me, Please tell me,
tell me once why? Because Jerry is simply having damn

(03:42):
doing damage control. Everyone knows Jason Garrett's on the hot seat.
Everyone knows that he thinks that Jerry thinks he's got
a super Bowl team. And what I'm sure his advisers,
like his son's telling him is, hey, dude, listen to me,
to me, really really really good. You still have a

(04:03):
shot at this thing. You win your division, you automatically
get a home game. You guys do know the rules, right,
Remember that Seattle is under five hundred. They got a
home game in the playoffs. The first thing is, you
win this division, and you're gonna win the division because
the divisions crummy, You're gonna get a home game. You
get a home game, You're gonna win a home game.
You might be able to win two. You win two,
you can't fire him, and you make yourself sound foolish. Secondly,

(04:25):
everyone knows that you've got some coaching issues. Everyone knows
your coaches on the hot seat, what is the win
and what you're doing. And the third thing is by
he seems to be admitting and might not have a
championship team, because if you have a championship team, it
kind of doesn't matter what you say. If the championship team,
you just go, hey, let's go play again. We'll beat

(04:47):
you next time. Here's a little bit more Jerry Jones ruler. Today,
all of us, including the fans, want to win a
damn football game. Now. I know, we've got a lot
of other things to think about, who's coaching, who's playing,
who's compared to another player someplace house. How about let's

(05:07):
win some ball games, folks. I'm not known as a
guy who gets hand cramps when I'm riding checks, but
I want to win some Yeah. Translation, I played a
lot of money. I expect to win some football games
against good teams. Jerry is no different than any big
time booster of a college football team. I donate all

(05:28):
this money, and you can't beat Michigan. I donate all
this money. You can't can't be you can't beat Ohio State. Alright,
this is what This is what guys do. This is
what guys do. So I'm sure he's frustrated. Everybody's frustrated.

(05:49):
Everybody's frustrated. I'm sure that you have a coach who's
on the hot seat. We all knew that, all knew it. Hey,
And I'm sure, I'm positive positive that if they don't
win at least a playoff game and maybe two, Jason
Garrett'll be out of a job this upcoming year. This

(06:12):
is nobody no surprise. Remember, he wasn't extended. It was
an extended So I just and obviously the old man
said something in which he felt, and he has the
right to say, but he knew he shouldn't have said it,
And by saying it, all he does is open up

(06:35):
two questions for his players about the coaches that they
might have already had. But when the owner says it,
it does you no good, just does no good. So
I wish it was you know, I wish it was
more complicated than that. Well, then there's this. There's like, no,
this is fairly uncomplicated, fairly uncivilized, fairly easy to figure out.

(07:03):
It just is, And the easiest way to figure it
out is to just use logic. And logic tells you
he thought he had a super Bowl team, and now
he's like, maybe I don't. Maybe it's the coaching, Maybe
it's the players. I'm frustrated we can't beat a playoff team.
We know what that means, right, The true litmus test

(07:26):
is can you beat the good teams to get into
the playoffs. All you gotta do is beat the bad
teams to win the playoffs. You gotta be the good teams. Right.
This isn't like the n c A tournament, where a
team can win their conference tournament that doesn't belong and
sneak in. I wear a bad team. They're all good
teams once you get to that level, and you might

(07:46):
get but you have zero chance, none, zero chance of
winning if your owner continues to call out the coaching
staff every time you lose a game. Whatever likelihood there
is of a big time playoff run, which appears less
and less likely by the game against the elite team,

(08:09):
it's made even that small percentage null and voyd. If
you are openly and harshly critical of each and every
coaching decision, the ones that go wrong, right, the ones
that go wrong. I told you this yesterday. They announced it.

(08:31):
I told you two days ago, and they the sources
said that there and even Jerry Jones said yesterday they're
not going to fire him midseason. Even if your coach
isn't good enough, he's not so inept, you've got to
make the move. And oh yeah, by the way, as
much as he may he may be, it may not
be the guy you give yourself no chance with an

(08:53):
interim coach. There is no head coaching waiting. There is
no perfect answer. You know, even if you're gonna in
it to the offensive coordinator, he's the one who's play
calling has left so much up to chance, right, So
Jerry's saying a lot by sitting there going He's I'm

(09:15):
his guy, over and over again. He's admitting he's frustrated,
and I think he's admitting to everybody in the world
that the ceiling is much lower than maybe he thought,
maybe he misevaluated, and with every negative comment it's made
even lower. Be sure to catch the live edition of

(09:36):
The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Easter noon
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio
a app. Duke had a uh had a nonconference home
win streak again is against non conference foes because Caroline
had beaten them at their place a couple of different
you know, several different times. Tyler Hansbroke beat him all

(09:57):
four times he played him. But a hundred and fifty
game non conference home win streak if you play seven
or eight per year, so seven point five non conference
home games per year, how many years is a hundred
and fifty consecutive games without a loss? Uh? Well, the

(10:20):
last non conference home loss was in two thousand, so
you're very, very essentially correct. The man who authored that
upset last night, as the head coach of Stephen F.
Austin he's Kyle Kellery. He's also a longtime friend of mine,
our assistant coach, and I was at Oklahoma State. He's
an O s U A lum and I'm so happy
for me, joins us in the Doug Gotlip Show on

(10:41):
Fox Sports Radio. Kyle, how are you, hey, Doug. I'm
doing good. Deprived of sleep, but it's an enjoyable deprivation,
that's for sure. Okay. I Um, we don't want we
don't want those stories. We want you to keep your job.
Want you keep your job? Are you guys handing out
Thanksgiving dinners? Right now? We already did that today? Wait?

(11:01):
So what hold on you already? What time did you land? Uh?
We got back in the Nakodosius about five? Well, okay,
so you you leave? You guys charter okay, so you
charter from Raleigh Durham into Tyler, Texas? Yes, how far

(11:22):
is Tyler, Texas from? I do know that Nakodosius is
not Austin, right. Mike Boyton, who's a former assistant there
now the head coach dar Alma Mater, He admitted to
me on his on the podcast that when he took
the job at Steven f Under Brad Underwood. He didn't
know that Stephen F. Austin wasn't in Austin. So I
do know it's in Nagodosius. They have no idea how

(11:43):
far Nagodosius or from pronouncing Nakodosius is correct, is from Tyler, Texas. Um,
I would say, it's uh almost a little bit closer
maybe from Drum right to Miami maybe, so that's two
hours a little bit less. The nearest airport is two
hours away. Uh. Well, we got an airport thirty minutes

(12:08):
away from US Lufkin where we can land, but our
plane was a little bit too big a la at
that time. When we were coming back in there would
be nobody there to give us uh charter service. So
we had to land back in Tyler, which is that
far away. So because they're don't have commercial air closest
commercial aress Tyler, and so we had to go to

(12:29):
Tyler versus Bush in Houston. Alright, fair fair enough? Um okay,
So heading into the game, what were your thoughts on
what I mean, look and your style is much you know,
you try to continue with Brad style, which is all
out pressure that I assume was the game plan. All
out pressure defensively. Yeah, I mean, you know you're you're

(12:49):
a great player. I mean, if your style isn't good
enough to win that game, what do you what message
you send into your kids? You know, you obviously make
adjustments and you you play the game a little bit differently,
but you don't want to send a message to your kids. Hey,
what we do isn't good enough, But you make stal
adjustments obviously who you're playing, how you're playing tweeks, certain

(13:12):
things going into the game. We help more. You know,
we're off the ball, but we still we're going to
try allow to make winging entry passes and run their
offense and stuff like that. Still front of the post
for the most part, and do those kind of things.
You were down I think as many as what fifteen
in the first half we did we got down fifteen.

(13:33):
What what did you say to your team because you
didn't you didn't call it time out when you're down fifteen.
You let them kind of play play through it a
little bit till the TV time out. When you came
to that TV time out, I think you cut to nine.
What were you saying to your team when you're down
nine or down fifteen? The first half. You know, we
we we really tried to try to get the ball.
This senior who won games you don't wanted else you

(13:54):
wanted a Baylor played an NC tournament, played really well
against sexist tech. Keevan Harris really tried it felt like
if we get him isolated against some of their freshmen
and space in the middle ball screen and felt like
we could attack him. So trying to run some things
to get him in the middle ball screen on carry
or some of the other big guys felt like we
get him to the basket and that way. So we

(14:16):
just kept trying to run some stuff to get him there.
And I thought we got a little quick with some
of our stuff early in the game and got it.
We were excited. You know, you've been there. It's like
playing the old Gallagher. Really never been there. It's like
just like playing old Gallagher had at two thousand people,
and that's what it's like. Our kids got excited and

(14:37):
we weren't guard him very good and uh, but it
was that's what in our senior, you know, Keevan Harris,
our best player, gave our guys some confidence because he
was making shots around the rim and we turned him
over some and scored in transition, and so he kept
us in the game in the first half. For sure,
called an early time out. I didn't want to burn

(14:57):
another one. I almost went coach sudden on for sure. Uh.
But for for people who don't know what you mean
going coach setting on him, what do you mean just
calling multiple timeouts back to back to back, you know,
to get it organized and and and not letting them,
not let them get away from us. What do you
got in your mouth right now? No, that's not true.
What do you got your mouth right now? Um? What

(15:21):
kind we might get? Huh? You're coaching still, Copenhagen guy.
Just want to make just want to just want to
make sure. Okay that my my my ears heard heard
the spit. Kyle Keller joining us on the Doug King
of East Texas joins us in the Dug Out Lips
Show on Fox Sports Radio. You mentioned middle ball screen,
So for people who don't, I'll help you visualize what
coaches talking about. They're you know, the best young players.

(15:44):
Vernon Carey's a center and this is Jim Larenega's philosophy,
and they've had a lot of success in Miami, which
is like, yeah, they have NBA caliber big guys, but
if I can get my best player on your big
guy on a hundred different ball screens, eventually it only
gets him potentially in foul trouble, but also where's him
down on the at the offensive end so he can't
dominate your Maybe lack of size? Is that? Is that?

(16:07):
Is that? Is that a fair assessment of why you
want to use that strategy? Yeah, and just it really
felt like, you know, he's seventy pounds, you know, blocked
a bunch of shots last night and wanted him to
move him around. We thought if we could move them around,
he couldn't stay in the game that long and we
could match up better with our defense or speed and

(16:28):
our quickness, and we could we would be more even
size wise as the game went along. And that's exactly right.
And I didn't know if his his foot speed. We
just hope you know that every coach goes into a game,
this is what we're doing, and as you know, you
have to tweak and adjusted as a game goes along.

(16:49):
I thought the most impressive part was stealing a dunk
early and second half. Casher Stanley got a dunk off
a trade Jones pass, you're down seven. The place is
bunkers right and and uh um, you know you guys
continue to pound them on the offensive. Glass got a
couple of off offensive rebound buckets to kind of keep
it close. What what is it with this team? What

(17:12):
is it with your your program that most teams nine
thousand people at Duke they get a deal and a
dunk they will Why why did you guys not wilt?
You know, I think it's what you said earlier. I mean,
we've had with this the winnings program in the state
in the last decade, and I inherited great culture and
you know that means a lot. And it was from

(17:33):
Danny Casper to Brad Underwood where you know this program
expects to win and kids as you know that Jersey
means a lot. And it's you don't know if you
explain that on the radio or not, but until you
step into the locker room, they don't want to let
somebody else down, regardless who you're playing. And uh, you know,
and that's what this uniform means here. And those kids

(17:55):
knew they're not playing for just themselves, They're playing for
more and and they wanted they kept fighting through that time,
an offensive rebound and mes the toughest playing the game. Um, yeah,
you gave up a couple at the end of regulation,
Like what what what is that like to experience for
If people don't know tie game trade Jones, Mr Jumper
Vernon carry got one cash you Stanley gets one? Right

(18:18):
Like we went to for one. We took a quick
shot thinking, regardless of what happens, we're going too for
one right there, and then trying to regardless if we
got one or not, we will get the ball back.
And I told our kids, I said, guys, we're gonna
be gonna run this and try and make it three,
and we're gonna run out of here as a winner
if it's a score, if we were down to we're

(18:39):
gonna trying to win this thing at the end. Alright,
So fast forward overtime, both teams that only scored a point. Right,
you're kind of dead on your feet. It's like the
it's like the twelfth round of a heavyweight. Heavyweight about Um,
what was the what was the game plan? As Tredy
Jones had the basketball and you guys are on defense,
you know, we were hoping they would bring somebody to him.

(19:02):
And we were gonna trap him and makes one of
those freshmen who hadn't made a game winner beat us.
That that's that, and that really didn't change much as
the game went along. But that's what we're trying to
do as and that didn't change. I mean, were that's
that was a pre eminent deal throughout the whole game,
was make one of those guys make a game winner.

(19:23):
And you know this, you know, I felt like as
the game went along, they were getting tighter and we've
got more loose and more comfortable that and there's one
of a few games that Stephen F. Auston where we
got to play relaxed because we get everybody's best shot
here and all that kind of stuff. And you know,
you wrote those teams rolling in the Gallagher, you were

(19:46):
going to get their best effort, regardless who they were.
And as the game more along, the pressure built on
the home team, that pressure built on them something we
were we were Fortunately, Bang gets the steel, picks it up,
goes the length of the floor, lays it in just
before the buzzer. Um, what's what's that feeling like? Um
My first thought, honestly was I felt terrible. I was

(20:08):
happy for our program. I've been on the other end
of it. I felt terrible for Koszewski. That was my
initial reaction because I've been on that other end, and
he was so gracious to play us. Um just to
have the game for our program was a perfect way
to end it. Loose ball first, go on the floor

(20:28):
with two hands, two feet, and it was a perfect
way for us to win the game as far as
the way I see our program. But I felt terrible
for him. I'm looking down there, I'm thinking, thank gosh,
we didn't get in a clipboard war, because I'm losing
that thousand out of you know, however many the m
I ain't beat him, and that and so, and then

(20:50):
it turned to look at my wife and like, can
you believe this happened? You know, one of those moments,
you know, just like you're talking about then. It hadn't
happened in twenty years, but it was a great moment
for our program or a university. You have a manager
is Nathan. I believe Pearents got punched in the iDeer
in the celebration. Have you seen the video? Uh? He
he showed me after the games the coach up. It

(21:11):
starts getting black and blue. You know it was a
celebration deal. Nobody hit me from the Duke crowd wanted
me to know that, okay, And and then he looks
like Roger Federer. How about this Nathan Bine deal where
his his parents they lost their house and lost the
church and they and the school has a has a

(21:32):
as in the school and is your school has an
approved go fund me And it was at a couple
of thousand dollars before the game. Now it's up to
how many times with last check out? What's it up
to sixty five thousand or something like that. That's a
you know that they've been doing. They've had the school
in this church for thirty five years, has over six

(21:53):
hundred kids. And it's it's it's not for his family,
it's for those It's gonna touch so many other people.
And you know, I'm just grateful. There's a lot of
North Carolina fans, maybe NC state fans that appreciate what
we did last night. They want to help to him
and help those kids in that island because his dad's
an unbelievable man. He's a pastor and helped so many others.

(22:14):
Hey man, congrats, really happy for you. It's gonna be
a very happy Thanksgiving and get some rest at some point.
Thanks I will that's us Uh Sam and Chelsea Yest.
That's special k Uh. Kyle Keller, head coach of Stephen F. Austin.
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific.
Did you guys check out the college football rankings? Okay,

(22:39):
there's two things that everybody's fired about. One is and
maybe this is probably you know, pretty obvious importance. Who's
the fourth team? Although that'll kind of work itself out right.
Georgia right now is number four. If they beat l
s U. L s U would probably slide to number four,
Georgia would move up to three, or I don't think

(22:59):
they leap frog Clemson. So you'd have Georgia at three
UM and you'd have Ohio State. But what happens if
Ohio State loses to Michigan? They probably fall down to four? Right,
So Georgia and and l s U only eliminate one
another or the only Georgia can likely be eliminated with

(23:23):
a loss because they're one lost team. There is still
the potential for chaos. Right, if you're a hey, I
want everything to be crazy and chaotic. What you're rooting
for is Michigan to beat Ohio State. You're rooting for
South Carolina to be or Clemson to lose one of

(23:46):
their last two games. You're rooting for UM. And obviously
Arkansas is not gonna beat l s U. So you'd
want Georgia Tech to beat Georgia and then Georgia to
beat l s U in the sec caampionship game, and
it'd be a complete mess, complete mess. But we're also

(24:10):
concerned about who's number one. Ohio State leap do you
go leap frogged or leapt leap leap leap frog right,
and leap frogged l s U. And I'm not sure
exactly what l s U did all that wrong. I
will point out that while Ohio State one and one

(24:31):
in fairly convincing fashion, they did have a bunch of
turnovers which allowed Penn State to have the ball with
a chance to tie the game late or at least
not late in the fourth quarter. UM Ohio State won
seventeen at home against Penn State. They have completely and

(24:51):
thoroughly dominated most all of their competition Penn State was
their closest game so far this season. They had Michigan
Day they beat by twenty four that when they won
by eleven, no one that no one's gotten them to
single digits. They take on Michigan on the road this
Saturday on Fox. Do I think Ohio States the best
team in the country? Maybe? Could I make an argument

(25:13):
l s US the best team in the country? I could,
And normally doesn't matter. Right, it doesn't matter because you're
gonna have to beat somebody good to get to the
championship game and then we can decide it on the field.
But has anyone else noticed that Clemson, who was the
preseason number one, not only still hasn't lost, but seems

(25:37):
to have found their stride while Ohio State is fumbling
the football and giving up seventeen points to Penn State. Well,
while uh, you know, Georgia at times has looked beatable
and has actually lost a game. While l s Use
defense gave up a bunch of points, as the committee

(25:57):
chair pointed out, to Texas among others, and of course
to Alabama, Clemson has put up fifty nine fifty nine
fifty two in their last four games alone, the most
points they allowed was North Carolina was that super close game.
That's what's made everybody determine that Clemson is overrated. A

(26:20):
game by the which that they won, that they had
a big lead, that North Carolina went for two with
a chance to try and win the game, after seeing
their own blood, they went. They beat Florida State at home,
ten Louisville on the road to ten, Boston College, Wafford,
NC State, Wake Forest, They got South Carolina, and then

(26:40):
they'll play the a c C Championship game either Virginia
or Virginia Tech, with an outside chance that they play Miami.
None of these teams are gonna beat him. But everyone's
arguing about the toss spot because they want to say
we're number what? Were number what? But the real thing
is don't want to be number two? Who does number

(27:02):
two work? Four? Sorry? Is my favorite line from Austin Powers. Right,
look at the numbers. In the last six games, they've
given up less than ten points per game. This is Clemson.
Their average margin of victory has been over forty two
points per game. Trevor Lawrence in his last six games
nineteen touchdowns, three interception, complete percentage two forty yards per

(27:23):
game ten point one yards per attempt, and he hasn't
played the entire game because they've been kicking everybody's ass.
The story about being number one is not that you
want to be number one. The story about being number
one is you don't want to play number three, right like, man,
get me out of their bracket. That's the last thing

(27:44):
that I want. I want to be number one so
that I can play number four. Alabama probably doesn't get
it because they won't have a championship game, and one
win over Auburn wouldn't be enough. If say Oklahoma wins
out or obviously Georgia, those are two other prime contenders.

(28:08):
The problem is Clemson was so impressive at the end
of last year. They lost seven starters defensively at the
start of this year, and Trevor Lawrence wasn't as good.
Trevor Lawrence first five games, eight t d s, five,
interception completion percentage eight one point three yards per tempt.
Trevor Lawrence wasn't good. It wasn't great. And because he

(28:32):
was so awesome and everybody determined he was gonna But
the difference in Clemson, in like Oklahoma or even Ohio
State is they're making fewer mistakes. They're playing better football.
And I will grant you they're not playing against great competition,
but a blind man can see they're better now than
they were early in the year. The reason no one
wants to be number two is because they don't want
to play number three. Clemson were sloppy to start the year,

(28:57):
almost lost a game since then, were like, you know what,
let's just kick everybody's ass. Let's just kick everybody's ass.

on the Doug Gottlieb Show. I'm just thinking of Rodney Dangerfield,
famous favorite comic growing up. DJ oh Well. First of all,
no respect, no respect. I'll tell you, no respect at all,
No respect at all. Oh gosh, but I want to

(29:41):
but the buck. The end of the other day, I said,
where's the good place to get some action? He said,
yo house, no respect at all. Anyway, Uh, you know
what favorite I can remember, and I was I would
have gotten big trouble if my parents knew I was
watching it. But you know, Eddie Murphy, you know he's
got one. He's he's got what he's working on. Right.
I think it's like less than a year away on

(30:03):
Netflix and Eddie Murphy specially. Yeah, it's supposed to be
supposed to be pretty pretty amazing. Um, all right, let's
get to let's get to a bunch of the Palaver
people are discussion. Um. I feel like Jerry Jones, uh,
he quite obviously. It feels like a Trump deal right
where he said something that even if you think it

(30:23):
and you feel it, and you might be right, like
what are you doing? You're killing your coach's chances of
winning games by questioning his his decision making. And it
feels like the last two days have been the old backtracking.
Though I didn't say that. I'm a huge Jason Garrett guy.
It's it's pretty transparent, is that your read of it? Well?
And then today I thought, you know, it's kind of

(30:45):
the whole weird line about I can finish sixth in business,
but that you know this team needs to finish first. Um.
I mean to me, it's like here or zero type
ultimatum there for Jason Garrett. That's why I took it.
And this team doesn't win a championship, they're gonna they're
gonna make change and find a new coach. I just
think Jerry clearly sees the disconnect between the talent in

(31:05):
the in the production, and it sounds to me like
he's kind only finally got to the end of his rope.
I mean, I think they are I think they're very talented, Doug.
I think they are extremely I think their their talent
exceeds their record. I don't think they're the best team
in terms of talent in the NFL, but I think
they're in the top four or five. Um, And I
don't think that their record indicates that. What what is

(31:27):
missing is it? Is it play calling? Is it? I
mean the special teams play is a joke. But but
what in your mind is is missing? Well, I think
you try and find another, you know, another rusher, you know,
compliment what they have with the Marcus Lawrence. You know,
I look at a lot of the best defenses have
those two two big time dudes. They've got one. Um,
you can say they can go there. The special teams play,

(31:48):
as you mentioned, but I mean I look at you know,
quarterbacks playing and I believe a championship level. Um, you've
got a number one receiver, you've got a big time back,
your secondary's got some really good pieces in place. Linebacker
obviously they're loaded. I mean, the offensive line is still
one of the best in the league. And it's a
very talented roster to be sitting at a six and five. UM,

(32:09):
so you know that there is a disconnect there in
terms of talent the record. Doug got lip show here
on Fox Sports Radio one, NFL exec says, Hey, Tom
Brady still got his fastball when he needs it. Do
you do you agree tom Brady's missing too many layouts.
I don't care about fastballs as much, you know, I

(32:30):
care about being able to take the easy throws. And
this is an offense that's been a nickel and dime
affair for a very long time, UM, lacking you know,
big time weapons. But he was able to stay on
schedule because he just didn't miss those those underneath throws,
and he's missing a lot of them right now. So, UM,
there's definitely fall off there. And it's not just you know,

(32:50):
the the product around him, the environment around him, Um.
Although I think you're starting to see them figure this
out as they get help me on the offensive line,
Sony Michelle, I think had over eight yards rushing last week.
That's what they're gonna end up doing. At defense, special
teams run the ball, protect the ball, and uh, you
know the crazy thing is, Doug, the way they handle
their business in the regular season. They have two home

(33:10):
games in the super Bowl, and in two home games,
the first one you get two weeks to prepare for
with the best coaching football, and the Super Bowl you
get two weeks to prepare for with the best coach
and in the in football, it's a tremendous advantage. You
mentioned missing layups though, Like this is how it ended
with Jason Kidd, Right. People forget when Jason Kidd was
with the Knicks. They go to the playoffs and all
of a sudden, at all time great couldn't make a layup. Um.

(33:34):
And I mean there are a lot of people like, well,
you don't have to give him the weapons, Like, dude,
I don't care weapons. You might be right, but he
just he just looks like he's lost it. Yeah. Yeah,
And I think that the hope is that everything else
is in such good shape around him that maybe you
can squeeze, you know, that last Super Bowl out and
we've we don't have to go back far, you know,
go back to Peyton's last and and that falloff was

(33:56):
was pretty steep, and they still found a way to
hoist the trophy just being a part of it, not
being the captain of the ship there, Dania Jeremiah, Johnny Us,
Doug Gotlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Uh, look,
I think the Duck Hodges thing speaks to like, um,
the Mason Rudolph. Everyone forgot that he threw four picks

(34:18):
and played terrible against the Browns when when he gets
into it with with Myles Garrett, I feel like Duck
Hodges earned this opportunity, do you absolutely. I think it's
his ability to do two things. His ability to move
around a little bit, you can create some things, and
then also his ability to protect the football. And that
was that was what did Mason Rudolph in. They have

(34:39):
a very narrow way for them to win football games
right now. It's with great defense and it's not turning
the football over and the defense is gonna generate some points.
They're gonna give you some short fields. You know, drives
the end and punts or kicks or good drives for
this offense and just turn the ball over too much.
So that was it. I mean, that was that's why
they made that move. And I think when when Hodges

(35:00):
got out there, not only to move the ball, he's
just done a better job of of being careful with
the football and that's what they want. All right, let's
discuss Lamar Jackson. You saw it last year, like here's
what week so quickly forget you got. Ravens fans were like,
look at all you idiots had passed on him, Like, hey,
Ravens fans last year you were booing him in your
own stadium in the playoffs because the Chargers confused him

(35:23):
and made him throw, kept him in the pocket, limited
the running game. What have they changed? How have they
been able so far to evolve this thing? Well, I
think first of all, you look at what they did
going out and getting mark Ingram, which I think was huge. Um,
they go out and get him. When you have a
defense that's trying, and you heard what I'll talk about
not finding the football, you kind of have a lot
of those guys playing on their heels. Um, when you

(35:46):
have a powerful back like Ingram, who's that good. Um,
those are armed tackles because you don't have guys that
know where the football is and he just runs right
through those. So you've got that. Um. Adding Hollywood Brown
was a big part of it to give him a
little of a vertical stretch. So those are some of
the pieces kind of around him. But Doug, the biggest
component is he's throwing the football better than he ever has.

(36:09):
I mean, this is somebody when you go back his
freshman year passed or sophomore year, I think it was
fifty six. His junior year was at fifty fifty nine.
Last year he was fifty nine. This year he's at si.
I mean, he's throwing, physically throwing the football better than
he's ever thrown in his whole life. And I give
him a lot of credit for putting in the work

(36:29):
to improve in that area. And it's it's gonna be
fascinating with the scouting side of it, because forever, how
many times have you heard us all say, you know, well,
you can't really improve your accuracy. This kid hasn't. He
has improved his act. How does how is that? How
does that happen? How is he this outlier that that
can is it? Is it? And and I here, here's
me just wondering out loud, Mike Vick has openly said, hey, man,

(36:51):
I didn't work at it right. Vince Young has come
out and said or he didn't come out, Mike. We've
learned about Vince Young. Where um was it? It wasn't
CPK with cheesecake. Apparently he was the cheesecake factory taking
shots every day, Like spent like ten thousand a month
at cheesecake factory. Love the cheesecake factory, huge menu. By
the way, who doesn't love it? Um like you had?

(37:12):
We've had other super talented quarterbacks that were runners more
than throwers, that didn't improve and end up getting hurt
or having some limitation. Is it simply this kid doesn't
have the off the field distractions. This kid wants it
more than other people. Well, I think, first of all,
absolutely loves football. He's put in the work mechanically. I

(37:34):
can go back through and go pull up my notes
in college, and I liked, you know, I thought he
had a chance in the right situation where he could
he could hit and uh, he absolutely is exceeded that
and some of the mechanical fixes. He was very narrow
based thrower, um, which which caused balls to sail on him,
especially when he was working outside the numbers. Um, he's
widened out a little bit. He's improved that that aspect mechanically. Um.

(37:58):
So look, I think a lot of that is him
just putting in the time. And you have to think
about two when you when you think about let's compare
him with Vince Young. Vince Young playing at Texas, you know,
with the talent that they had around him and in
front of him. Lamar was in a much different situation
at Louis Violle. He did not have that type of
an offensive line in front of him or that type
of skill around him. So now he makes the lead

(38:19):
to the NFL. He's playing with better players on his
side of the football that he's ever played within his
whole life, where he actually has an advantage around him. So, um,
I think that's a little little part of the equation
as well. But I just I don't want it to
get lost that Lamar deserves the majority of the credit
for the work he's put in to improve because it's
all out there for everybody to see, no question about it.
There's absolutely no question about it. But there was work

(38:42):
that had to had to improve. Um, what have the
Jets changed? Because all of a sudden, Adam Gates looks
like a genius and Sam Donald looks like, well, who
we thought Sam Donald would be? Well? First of all,
you know, Sam had Mono in that opening game against
the Bill you know, so he was They were kind
of figure out what was wrong with him at that

(39:03):
point time. So even that game, throw out that game.
He misses the games with mono, uh comes back. The
offensive line is an absolute train wreck. Um. And he
really had two terrible games. Doug was terrible against New
England and that defense, which we've all seen, they've done
it just about everybody. And he was terrible against Jacksonville.
You throw out those two games and he's really played

(39:23):
pretty consistently. And the exciting thing I think for the
Jets going forward is this is the worst offensive line
he's gonna play behind, hopefully in his career. Um, because
they're only gonna get better. They're they're gonna pour resources
into that offensive line. They're gonna give him more time.
And him having played behind mediocre offensive lines at USC
and awful offensive lines with the Jets. It's forced him

(39:44):
to really really speed up his processing. So when you
get a good offensive line in front of him, with
the way he's getting through progressions, he's gonna be able
to get to the number four and number five in
the progression once you get an offensive line in front
of him, And that, to me, is why the ceiling
is so high for him going forward. Daniel Jeremiah DJ
joining us Doug Gotlip Show, Fox Sports Radio. Um, we've

(40:06):
talked before about about TWA getting hurt um, but what
about the other quarterbacks? Obviously, Joe Burrow has skyrocketed up,
and there's some to think that that's he's He's who
the Bengals want, being from Ohio. What about the what
about the other quarterbacks, specifically a guy at Oregon who

(40:28):
was less than impressive last week. Yeah, you know, it's interesting.
I was talking with Bucky on the podcast on the
Movie six podcast this last week comparing Justin Herbert and
Josh Allen. Josh Allens, you know, having success. They're winning
football games in Buffalo. They've got a formula that works.
And I said, you know, they're both big. I bet
you if you put them through a decathlon they'd be
very similar. Like these guys are both great athletes, are

(40:50):
very big, um and strong arms, all that stuff. There's
a comparison there. But Josh Allen is is a playmaker
where it's justin Herbert's a little robotic. Um. I don't
really see him feel the game, make off schedule plays
and and generate plays the way somebody like Josh Allen does.
And that's what worries me. Um. You know, he can
make the big time throws he misses, and he misses

(41:12):
three or four easy ones. It's a lot of one
read throws. It's a tough evaluation, man, It's one that
scares me. Daniel Jeremiah joining us on the Doug Gotlip
Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, alright, as the
league caught up to the Rams, or is this a
personnel issue? They stink upfront? Man, they're not good along

(41:33):
the offensive line. Um. And then when you've got Todd
Gurley for whatever that you know you want to believe
about the health situation there, he's not the same guy.
So when you're not able to run the ball, you're
putting yourself in long yard situations and I think offensively
weapon wise, Um, they've got really really good B B
plus receivers. You know, three of them really good B

(41:55):
B pluses. I don't know that they have somebody that's
an alpha number one wide receiver when you're gonna see
man coverage that you can go, Okay, this is the
guy that's gonna win for us repeatedly. Um And so
I think all that things kind of factored in together,
and the quarterbacks lost confidence clearly. UM. So it's just, uh,
it has not come together this year. The challenge is
gonna be going forward. You've got to address the offensive line.

(42:17):
And once you have to pay Jalen Ramsey, you're gonna
have so much money tied up into a handful of players,
and you're you're down draft picks because of some of
these trades. So you don't have money, you don't have picks.
They go solve some of these problems upfront. Do you
think they signed they pay Jalen Ramsey. I think after
you've traded the draft pick they've traded to go get
him the picks. I should say they have no choice.

(42:40):
You can't. I mean you have to. I mean you
you're all in on him. How did the Niners match
up with how the Ravens play you know, very well
personnel wise. UM. I think with having waves of defensive
linemen they can throw at you. I think the size
the Ravens just lost the scura their center and you

(43:00):
look at Buckner and Armstead inside DJ Jones inside, UM
that that's a really good interior for the Ravens, and
I think that they take a little bit of a
step back without their center, and that is a really
really good group. UM that can push the pocket back
a little bit, collapse things, and obviously we know what
they have coming off the edge. So UM, I think
they match up the match up as well as anybody

(43:20):
that the challenges if you haven't seen it and you're
not used to some of the you know some of
the run scheme, you're gonna see here where you're gonna
be unblocked and got to figure out where the block
is coming from or who's your read. That's going to
take an adjustment period. So I think you'll see them
settle down and settle in in this game. I only
surprised if the Ravens it kind of a shock to
the system early on in the ballgame. Um, why don't

(43:41):
they just hit the quarterback at or suddly after the
mesh point. We say it every we stayed every week,
we say it every week. It had it doesn't happen.
I don't know. That's that to me, It's like it's
like a gentleman like like they do it now. Russell
Wilson early in his career, they would hit him. Now
they don't like a gentleman's agreement, like when I canna
hit your quarterback. You know, you know what I mean.
But yeah, but Russell is only gonna pull it. Russell

(44:02):
is only gonna pull it two or three times. I understand.
I understood again. You gotta hit him. Somebody's gonna hit him,
and it's gonna send shock ways to the world. Let's
hope he doesn't get hurt. But that's that, That is
the that that is the issue with this. Daniel Jeremi
moved the sticks as the podcast with our guy Bucky Brooks. Bucky,
by the way, we'll be sitting in for me tomorrow.
Daniel will be having a my tie somewhere. He's, you know,

(44:24):
taking the day off and chill. I'm kidding. Thanks d J.
