What Up America. Doug Gottlip Show, Fox Sports Radio brought
to you by Farmers. Farmers Insurance does a thing or
two about how to save a buck well when you
bundle home in auto. So I as the Farmers Dot
comic call one eight Farmers to get a quote today
(00:43):
as uh. This from Tom Brady's Instagram he hit the
I G all right, it's all about the Graham. In
both life and football, failure is inevitable. You don't always win,
you can't help or learn from that failure. Pick yourself
up with great enthusiasm and place yourself in the arena again.
(01:08):
And that's right where you will find me, because I
know I still have more to prove. Thomas Edward Patrick
Brady to some of you the goat right to me,
the most successful quarterback in the history of the league.
Not the greatest quarterback I've ever seen play the position,
(01:28):
but a remarkably successful guy who I have no problem
if that's the way in which you judge him. That said,
what do we read into it? There was no talk
about the Patriots, no talk about playing elsewhere either, just hey, dude,
I still got some gas left in this tank. And
(01:49):
I think this is going to be fascinating. Fascinating because
as much as Brady still believes he has gas in
the tank, does in this feel a little bit like
Brett Farve two point oh? Now. The difference, obviously is
the Packers had to wait several years, three different times,
and by the third year, because they had Aaron Rodgers
(02:12):
and you've been there, they were like, oh, you're ready
to go. Okay, bye bye. Obviously, the Patriots thought they'd
be in that position this year or maybe last year,
but they trade away Jimmy Garoppolo. So what now? Well, now,
remember free agency comes before the NFL Draft, and Jared
Stidham does not appear to be the heir apparent, or
(02:33):
at least no one has said as much. Out of
New England or people that know what they say inside
the front offices of New England. So what now we
sit and we wait and this this is where the
Packers were. He is Brett Farve, maybe with a little
less in the tank at this point, because he's far
(02:53):
older than Brett Farve was Farv remember, finally decided he
wanted to come back. But when he came back, the
Green Bay Packers have already moved on. He went to
the Jets. They started out nine and three, He tore
his bicep, played through it, played terribly, They fell out
of the playoffs, and then ultimately got to go to
the Vikings where he wanted to go to begin with,
(03:15):
to play against the Packers. Had a great year, then
had a terrible year after once again being talked out
of it. It is amazing, truly amazing, how these guys
repeat the mistakes of the past, how they they just
believe then, no matter what, they can do what others
(03:38):
could not. And this is you want to call it
a Napoleon complex that Adolph Hitler had right, don't attack
Russia in the heart of winter and don't fight a
war on two fronts. Napoleon did him, did those and fell.
The same thing happened to Hitler. I'm not saying that
(04:00):
Brady as a Hitler or Napoleon complex. I'm just saying
that the past is president. And we've seen this before
from superstar quarterbacks. Now, maybe it's because Brady looks at
his supporting cast and says, you know, if I had
a couple of wide receivers, this could be Denver Broncos
two point oh. But for Brady, a guy whose performance
(04:26):
has disappointed late in both of the past two seasons,
there are ways to navigate as you get older in
the NFL. Right, playing in a dome does elongate your career.
So I've heard people discuss Indy that one seems staying
in the a f C seems far fetched to me,
(04:47):
but it's not crazy. The other thing outside of playing
in a dome is playing an altitude. Oh godly, playing
an altitude doesn't help to help your football. What are
you talking about? Right? It own? He helps when you
kick field goals or hit home runs, but doesn't help
when you throw a football. Of course it does. It's altitude.
It's science does in fact work. So look around the
(05:10):
league and if you want to know where Brady can go.
It's somewhere with great weather, somewhere that plays in the Dome,
and somewhere where he's surrounded by really good players. The
Colts have the offensive line and they have the Dome.
They don't have the wide receivers. The Chargers have the
(05:31):
wide receivers and the running backs. They don't have the
offensive line. The Patriots are feel like they're two wide
receivers away to that they had on the roster. Only
one couldn't get right. Actually both just couldn't get right, guys.
So the more we look around, the more we try
and find a home for Brady, the more it feels
(05:53):
like Brady is no dope. He understands that the best
way to get what he wants be competitive, get him
back to another deep playoff run, probably to stay put.
But he's going to leverage Indie, He's going to leverage
the Chargers. This was Chris Simms yesterday talking about Brady's future. Obviously,
(06:14):
they need to help him out a little bit, regardless
of he's there or not there. They need more weapons
in the past game. But I think you know in
my heart of hearts, so I just I gotta see
it to believe it. I think he'll be back in
New England. I'm gonna say one more year and then
and then they're gonna tell him like, this is it, Tommy, Okay,
one more shot, one more go for it. Let's see
if we can win it all. We'll get your receiver.
(06:35):
And if it doesn't work out, he moves on with life.
One more shot, one more receiver. If it doesn't work out,
a one year contract. And it's funny. If you look around,
you're like, okay, how could they make this work? There'll
be a new GM in Cleveland. We'll have no ties
(06:57):
to the Odell Beckham Jr. Acqui position. And as they
try to shore up the culture, and you have a
guy who has told people he didn't want to be there,
told people in other teams he didn't want to be there.
Doesn't that make a whole hell of a lot of sense.
You can find a wide receiver is not happy where
he is to go play with Brady, to throw with Brady. Hell,
(07:17):
you might even be able to get Antonio Brown back
if he just stay off the Graham for the entire offseason.
But when I hear Tom Brady say I'm coming back,
like that's cool, that's great. This does feel like Farv
two point or three or four point oh, because it
took far several years, several different times. Remember when Farve
(07:39):
was retiring after throwing the pick against the Saints, and
then Children's Chile sent three guys down the private plane
to go bring him back to Minnesota. And when they
brought him back, he at a press conference at a
Nike He had on that looked like he had mowed
the grass for fifteen years and had he burg with
it on. That's not how this guy rolls. But this
(08:00):
is Tom Brady saying, hey, New England, if you want
to keep me, you've got two months to figure it
out because young wide receivers don't work. All right, nikkil
Harry will be back next year. They have no choice.
They'll try and figure out how to make it work
with Mohammed Sanu. Of course, Julian Edelman will be back.
(08:20):
But they need a dude, a veteran dude who they
acquire early in a statement of we're gonna run this
thing back and we're gonna fix it. If not the
sign that you need, that Brett, that Tom Brady Brett
five two point oh will go elsewhere. Is what the
(08:41):
Patriots do in free agency or you know, in this
period before we get to the draft, because the draft
doesn't help Tom Brady. It's like Lebron James, like those guys,
by the time they develop, they're gonna be into retirement,
into their fifth mimosa. He needs a veteran guy. So
(09:05):
Tom Brady announcing a man, I still got gas left
in the tank. Is Brett Farves saying I want to
come back. The difference between the Pats now and the
Packers then is the Packers had Aaron Rodgers. Jared Sidham
is not Aaron Rodgers, so they are kind of beholden
to him if they want to make it work. And
if they want to make it work, they're gonna have
(09:26):
to give him a bunch of money, short term deal,
and they're gonna have to get him a bunch of
get him some guys to throw it too. But you know, like, look,
they're not that far off from where the Broncos were
when Peyton Manning won it. Not when Peyton Manning through
fifty touchdown passes. When Peyton Manning wanted when he wanted,
he was nine touchdowns seventeen in receptions. Do I think
that will happen again. I don't. I don't, But I
(09:51):
also don't think that Tom Brady is that far down
the road athletically or throwing the football. Still have more
to prove, says I'm here. I want to a football,
which is what he iterated before he reiterated on the
Graham where is it. The best talent in terms of
skill positions is with the Chargers. The best line is
with the Colts, and they play indoors the most equity
(10:15):
and what makes the most sense is to stay where
he is. But they got to get more players to
support the fact that at this point in his career
he can't throw the complex routes, can't throw the digs,
the deep outs. Those days are done. So you have
to put an amount of talent around him that can
hide what he can't do. If they don't, there's the
(10:36):
signal they're allowing him to walk out the door. If
they do, they're gonna try and run it back. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug gott
Leap Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific
on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio wapp.
Ben Vole joins us Okay, so give me how you
(10:56):
think this goes with Brady. So it's like a game
of chicken right now between Brady and Craft and Belichick.
Brady has made it clear he wants to play, He's
ready to train hard, he thinks he's a championship level quarterback. Uh.
He he wants some respect, not only with money, but
I think more importantly with a commitment. You know, not
(11:16):
just for next year, but I think he wants the
multi year commitment, whereas Craft and Belichick I think are
pretty clear like, yeah they'll have Brady back, but year
a year and on their terms, and yeah, you want
to go test the market out, Okay, Yeah, let's see
what you can see what else is out there? Tom,
and Brady's like, I'm gonna do it. I'm gonna sign
with the Chargers, I swear. So we've got two more
(11:38):
months of this. Uh, there's like a big salary cap
deadline on March seventeenth, um where he would the cat
the Patriots will take a big cap hit if Brady
is not on the team and his contract. Boys, So
we've got two months of them going back and forth,
and there's gonna be a lot of Instagram posts and
probably you know, short interviews with Peter King and and
lots of quotes that we're gonna have to you know, read,
(12:01):
read the code and decipher um because it's not going
to be the prettiest uh separation right now for for
Brady and the and and the Craft family and the Patriots.
So you know, I still think there's plenty of time
for them to work out a deal, but it's gonna
take a while for them to get there. Okay, there's
there's a bunch here. Um. Which is really interesting is
(12:22):
who is Craft more aligned with? Right? Like that's the
big thing he is. Craft has always had the back
of Brady um, but his Craft more aligned with Belichick
in that Look, I love Brady, but I can't sign
you to a four year deal like this just doesn't
make any sense. Or is he that keep Tom at
all costs? Uh? So I think if it really comes
(12:44):
down to one or the other, I think Craft has
to take the coach because long term, Belichick is the
one you know, you want uh guiding this organization moving
forward and you know, building it into the next era.
You know, whether it's him or he's setting it up
for someone else. Brady we all know only has you know,
if he has a year or two left at most probably, so,
(13:07):
you know, if it comes down to it, I think
Kraft has to choose Belichick, but generally he has sided
with Brady. Brady has brought him a lot of success
and accomplishments over these years. And he, you know, Craft
shows Brady and the Jimmy Garoppolo thing, and you know
Belichick would have much rather keep Garoppolo and moved forward
with him. So so Craft Aready overruled Belichick once on
(13:29):
the quarterback thing. I think Belichick looks at it like, um,
you know, well, you know, if Brady comes back, so
be it. I think Belichick is probably ready to move on.
Let the past be the past, and you know, let's
let's get moving with with the future already. But you know,
if he if he's totally yeah, we're gonna bring Brady back,
I don't think Belichick is gonna be so upset about
(13:50):
it or anything. He's gonna certainly gonna deal with it.
But uh, you know, it comes down to his Brady
really gonna sign on the dotted line with Chargers, and
his Craft really gonna let Brady walk. It would be
massively unpopular here in New England for Brady to finish
his career with another team, because it's not like anyone
who's clamoring for Brady to leave. Everyone still wants him
here and he still played. Okay, you know, it wasn't
(14:11):
like Joe Montana or Peyton Manning at the end where
his body is breaking down. So it would be very
unpopular for craft Ed for Brady from Frankly for them
to let him get away and play with another team
next year. Okay, let's let's talk about the child. But
he's like with Chargers now, it makes sense from this perspective.
They need to sell seats, right and they're not selling
to They can't sail seats and Carson let alone in
(14:33):
Inglewood in a stadium that's four times the size of Carson.
They do have, not good but a great allotment of
skilled position players um and their offensive line was not good.
But but here's the bit, like, are you gonna go
play for the Chargers in l A when it's not
a Charger's town like that? And then Shane Stiken is
(14:55):
he just started calling plays like two weeks ago and
now he's the offensive Cordiny Like there's a lot i
understand the Hey, they got Keenan Allen, they got a
Hunter Henry, they got Mike Williams. You know, they got
Austin Neckler. Maybe maybe they have Melvin Gordon and you know,
you can fix some offensive line stuff in an offseason
when you have all of those other skilled position guys.
But is he Do we really think he's gonna go
(15:16):
play for the charge. I'm a Charger fan and I'm
like the only guy ever who said, like I am
actually a Charger fan, Like they make you like the
beta Max. Yeah, You're You're not wrong, And I think
that's what the Craps are kind of banking on that
Brady is not really going to go through with it,
because I agree. I think if for Brady to have
(15:36):
his best chances at success to potentially win another seven title,
it's here in New England, you know, with the best coach,
and they can bring back most of the defense, and
you know, they can beef up their offensive line. They
can go trade for an Odell Beckham and they could
run it back to next year. There's no reason that
the Patriots uh dynasty has to completely die. I think
they could still go for another run if they really
(15:57):
commit to it. You you you hold and you you
brought Bodell Beckham Jr. Isn't that the sign that we
need right like we we might not get the white
or the black smoke as to you know, out of
the out of the chimney as to whether or not
he's coming back, But in the in this kind of
two months interval between you know, that massive cap at
the end of the NFL's year. Isn't the acquisition of
(16:18):
a veteran wide receiver. Isn't that what's really going to
tell you what their plans are? Well, the timeline doesn't
quite work out that way because Brady, Like the deadline
for Brady is basically the day before free agency starts
because that's when his contract voids and that's when all
the salary cap money hits. So that was a smart
mechanism by the patriotism by Brady, Like, they're gonna get
(16:40):
clarity before the free agency starts, so they couldn't trade
for Beckham until after that, so they'd have to make
a decision on Brady, Uh, you know, sometime in early March.
I assume whether they're moving forward with him or not
and what kind of contracts they're going to give him um.
So they can't trade for Beckham until after they can.
And if they don't bring Brady back, then I don't
(17:01):
think Beckham makes a whole lot of sense. Then I
think you want to start over, um and you don't
want to go at a sixteen million dollar receiver like that.
But I'm just saying they could. You know, if they
do bring Brady back, it sounds like McDaniels might be staying. Now.
I'm not sure you know if he's going to be
going for this brown job or not. Uh, they can
bring you know, Edelman is coming back another year. They
(17:22):
could do it um. But you know, going to the
Chargers it sounds great like in Madden. But yeah, does
does Brady really want to go to a new organization?
Knew everything? You know, he's able to skip O T
s here in New England? Does he really want to
start showing up for that stuff again? The Raiders are
another team that I think that one makes actually more
(17:42):
sense to me. Here's here's the problem. Okay, both the
Chargers and Raiders. They want mobile quarterbacks, right like the
Raiders thing makes sense in terms of Vegas and you know,
one last kind of go around and they have first
round picks and they can go get guys and it
will be new and it'll be cool. But does he
does does he fit Gruden? Right? I mean end of
(18:05):
the day, does he fit Gruden? Yeah? I mean the
West Coast offense a lot of short, quick passes. Maybe
Brady would would be okay, just yeah, He's been in
one system his whole life. Is he gonna go pick
up a new system or blend multiple systems together? It's
just it. It doesn't you know. If Brady wants to
have success and go out on a high note, his
(18:25):
best chance of that happening, uh is here in New England.
You said, you know those teams will mobile quarterbacks. Everyone
wants mobile quarterbacks. Now, I think Belichick wants a mobile quarterback.
I think Belichick would love to have a kid like
two uh, or just you know, a more modern, twenty
century quarterback and see if he can win that way. Now, um,
I think you know with Russell Wilson and Pat Mahomes
(18:46):
and Kyler Murray. Uh, even Daniel Jones was a good runner,
Josh Allen, we're seeing today's quarterbacks are great athletes and
are are a really good hybrid. Lamar Jackson. Of course,
I can't forget him. Really good hybrid of running in
a ring. And it's like that age has finally come
to pass now in the NFL. And uh, people you
(19:08):
used to say it was a gimmick and it will
never work, and now it's becoming the offense. Uh, you know,
it's taking over in the NFL. And I think all
these coaches want want a hybrid mobile quarterback in the
bradies of the world. That's that's the yesterday football. I mean, yeah, yeah,
last thing. And I got like twenty seconds for you.
Maybe thirty is all these high seeds. Who is most
(19:28):
likely to lose at home this week? I'm not the
biggest Packers fan. I thought they were a soft thirteen
and three impossible. I like Jimmy g at home, and
I like the two a SC teams at home. I
really want to Ravens Chiefs a SC championship game. That
will be a great game. So I think, you know,
maybe the Packers can get knocked off this weekend. Whereas
I think that the Seahawks are maybe the weakest team
(19:49):
remaining because of their massive injuries, and they were very
fortunate with the injury two wins last week, but that
that's gonna be fascinating. Great stuff, Ben Ben Bowlands working
in the Boston Globe Palm on Twitter. Of course you
can hear him here in the Doug Gotlip Show. Ben,
great stuff. Happy New Year. Be sure to catch the
live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific. The Packers are always gonna
(20:11):
have Aaron Rodgers. Then you factor this in in addition
to having the best quarterback and frankly the best organization
in the division. Brian gun Const who's their general managers
only this is only his second year, and look at
the turnover in the roster. They're head coach in his
first year. He's gonna get better, not get worse. Aaron
(20:34):
Rodgers in his first year in this offense, He's gonna
get more familiar and better not get worse. Aaron. Aaron
Jones is there running back. He had a breakout year.
He's only twenty five years old. You give him what
to the three year window. That's what running backs get.
Davante Adams, though injured this year, and the best red
zone threat in the NFL, is only twenty seven years old.
(20:57):
Alan Zardo Mark uh Valda Scantlings only twenty five years old. Insummation.
They've turned over the defense, Mike Petton isn't going anywhere,
and the wide receiving corps is is cycling into their
prime as well as they're running back. And Aaron Rodgers
(21:21):
has been able to just get by and not have
to use his super human powers for a good portion
of the season. Getting ready for this postseason. Brian Blago,
by the way, cleared concussion protocol earlier today. He will
be a full go this weekend for the Packers. Supposed consistent,
He and the most consistent veteran lineman that the Packers have.
(21:45):
Aaron Rodgers just turned thirty six years old. At a
minimum two to three years reasonable think gets to forty
right gets to forty. He is a competitive dude. Do
I think that he has a plan and a life
and wants to do other things at football? Yes, but
(22:05):
I also think no. As a competitive dude, he wants
another shot at the brass ring. And when you look around,
you see the best team in their division. It's not
like the NFC East scares you a ton. The NFC
South breezes aging Jamis gives the ball away. And you
(22:26):
know the Carolina Panthers, they hired a college coach. It's
gonna take a while to get them going. The West
has the Niners, the team you always want to play
for a right but we've yet to see Jimmy Garoppolo
in a playoff game. And they're playing the Seahawks, who
have just tried to patch things together around Russell Wilson.
(22:49):
You know, you got the Rams, they're still trying to
figure it out. They're gonna reshape their defense, they're cann
try and fix some of their offense, but they got
Jared Goff and the packers of Aaron Rodgers. My my
point is quite simple, really simple that I don't think
this is the last or maybe even best opportunity for
(23:10):
Aaron Rodgers, but it is an opportunity, and they're healthier
now than they've been at either of the last two
deep run opportunities he's had. They're going to get better
before they get worse. Doug otlip Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. Yeah, I mean, I I just like, look
(23:30):
the You could tell me that the Patriots can run
one back, run it back at a wide receiver, but
they're close to the end we all kind of feel it.
The Packers feel closer to the beginning, new newest GM,
new head coach, new system, a lot of young players
just coming into their own new running back. Fox Sports

s r too said live. Let's welcome in Bill orm.
He covers the Lakers for the Athletic King and Fall
on Twitter at Bill or hum Um. Lots of stuff
to discuss with the Lakers. Let's let's start with Brian Shaw. Okay,
so Brian Shaw was on a Yahoo Sports podcast and
(24:16):
he had this to say about the trade rumors that
are suddenly now circling around Kyle Kuzma. I know Rich
Paul was trying to sign Kyle Kuzma when he left
his agent last year. He didn't sign with Ridge Fall.
So when you don't sign with Rich Fall and your
trainer comes out and says that Kauai was given it
to Lebron, You're gonna be out of the hand. Do
you believe that to be accurate? I don't think it's uh,
(24:38):
I don't think it's completely untrue. I mean, certainly the
Rich Paul Kyle Kuzma part is true. There was there
were conversations there. Um Kyle was kicking the tires on
some different agencies talked to Rich Um. I personally was
surprised he didn't go that way, given given the bond
who was developing with Lebron James in year one and
obviously his desire to hang around the Lakers. Um. But
(25:01):
I mean, listen, with Lebron James, skill is going to
trump all else. You know, Lebron is one with a
lot of guys who were not represented by by Rich Paul.
Do I think he cares a little bit, like if
if you, you know, go to his guy. Sure, I'm
sure he likes that KCP is an example, but like,
I don't think that that is going to suddenly find
you um out of favor or is the only way
(25:22):
to curry favor with Lebron James. But but if these
little things do start to accumulate, whether whether the tweet
was really associated with the comment from the trainer or not,
if your Lebron James and you just start to kind
of these little these little black marks kind of keep
adding up, maybe there's some annoyance there, maybe it becomes
(25:42):
a little bit of a terse or tense relationship, but
I don't think we're there yet. I haven't seen that.
I think at this point, all Lebron James wants Kyle
Kuzma to do is play like Kyle Kuzla, the guy
that we've seen over the first two years, as opposed
to the guy who's only seen intermittently this year, um
and and instead has been has intentative and um really
ineffectual for you know, probably the games he's played it. Yeah,
(26:05):
it's been. It's been fascinating to watch, you know, obviously
Kuzma feeling himself a little bit in terms of the hairstyles,
the pregame gear or whatever. I did that too, Doug.
You haven't. Yeah, no, I've I have not done that.
But that's but that's a little bit like that. That's
a little bit of Lebron's thing where I think, like, look,
he likes the attention. Don't get me wrong, he's also
Lebron James. But like, if you can't play, he doesn't
(26:26):
can't like that that will that doesn't sit well with
anybody when you know you're paying more attention to your
outfit and you're not playing that well. Right. If you're
playing well, you can wear whatever the hell you want.
If you're not playing consistently well, then it becomes an annoyance. Well,
I think it kind of goes back to fit in
fit out right with with Kevin Love years ago. Um,
is Kyle Kuzma fitting in or fitting out right now?
And I mean to me, if you're not playing well
(26:48):
and you're not um contributing at the level that Lebron
has said that he expects you to be contributing. Yet
you go back to his comments over the summer and
in the in the fall, you know him expecting him
to be the third best player, the obvious third option
on this team, and you're not reaching those levels. I
would be doing everything I could to kind of stay
in the shadows until I figured that out. And instead
Kyle Kuzma is, is you know, bringing more attention onto
(27:10):
himself with with the hairstyles? And he said he's not
a boring person, which I think is certainly true. But
I think that you know, there is kind of this
there now. There's questions like has he gone Hollywood? And
and I don't think again, we're thirty five games into
the season, the Lakers have the best record in the
Western Conference. Um, we're picking at mits probably at this point,
but um, the Lakers will need pl Kusma to be
(27:32):
to be at a different level come the spring than
he is right now. And the question the Lakers are
asking and fairly right now is is he going to
be there? Or do they need to do they need
to figure out how to upgrade. Doug Gotlin show here
on Fox Sports Radio, speaking of upgrades, there is a
need for an upgrade in the backcourt. What are you
hearing in regards to Darren Coulson coming out of retirement.
(27:53):
I mean, I think the sense around the Lakers is
that if he does decide to come out of retirement,
if that decision is made, um than than the Lake
than the Lakers would be with the front runner. Um,
especially if you're looking at it as Lakers versus the Clippers.
The Lakers have have some spending power with the Dwight
Howard uh Ericus, the de Marcus Cousin injury exception. They
(28:14):
have a bigger role for Darren Collinson than the Clippers would.
I think Darren Cullinson would start on this team. I
think he would probably bump Avery Bradley to the bench,
and you would have that that more reliable ball handler
shooter next to Lebron, who can who can play off
ball spot up when Lebron is is point Lebron and
it can also run the offense when Lebron goes off ball.
(28:34):
So to me, he's kind of exactly what they need. Um,
you know, I think the question is how quickly can
he get ready and does he ultimately make the decision
to play. And that's kind of what everybody's waiting on.
Do they cut Rondo or do they cut they use
DeMarcus Cousins spot So that's that's where it gets really interesting.
And one thing I'm not clear on in the c
p A is if they can use that injury exception
(28:55):
money if they end up waving de Marcus Cousins. If
you wave to Marcus Cousins, you lose the money, but
you get from that injury exception. I'm not clear on that, um.
But what I but I mean DeMarcus Cousins to me,
has always made sense of to cut candidate until you
get into the semantics of the cd A. You know,
farther down the roster and you have the second round
pick Taylor, Horton Tucker who hasn't played. But you know,
(29:15):
if you want to cut a guy you've been trying
to develop and bring along, the Lakers have shown no
real hesitation to move on from guys they drafted last year,
obviously Bonga Wagner, just to get in a position to
build their roster. So I think Cousins makes sense. I
don't think they would cut Rondo. Troy Daniels is on
a minimum. Maybe something like that would make a little
(29:36):
more sense. But um, it's it's a good question. I mean,
de Marcus makes sense to me if they could do
it and sink it's the money, okay, And then what
of the Anthony Davis turning down the extension? Is that
simply wait till the summer and wink, wink, not not
I'll signed the long term deal? Or should there be
cause for concern? No, Clucks are concerned as far as
(29:56):
as far as I see it. Um to me, that's
a situation where, um, Anthony Davis has said all along
he wasn't going to sign an extension. The Lakers came
to their first opportunity where they could start discussing money
with him, and they could actually start appealing to his
financial um interests, and they said, listen, we want we
want you here for the long term. We want to
pay you as much as we can when we can
(30:16):
to keep you here for the long term. On January seven,
it's this four year extension UM and you know, we
understand you may not want it. But I think for
the Lakes from the Lakers also, there's far more risk
of of accidentally causing offense by not offering the extension.
If you just assume that Anthony Davis is going to
turn down, or you just take for granted that he's
going to turn it down, and you don't extend the
(30:39):
offer the extension, are you then in a position where
it's like, wait a minute. The Lakers didn't even like,
you know, you do the They didn't even check the
box of at least offering the extension. So I think
they did the right thing. They offered it. But Andy
Davis declined, there's more money available in the off season,
there's another year. I mean, it could be as roughly
forty million a year for five years versus thirty six
and million in the year for four years UM. Also,
(31:02):
no guarantee Anthony Davis would sign a five year max
with the Lakers. We've seen guys go to plus one.
He could do that with the Lakers in the summer.
That would get him into an option year in He's
still twenty nine, would be in the prime of his
career as Lebron is presumably flowing down. He would be
thirty seven going on thirty eight. To give Anthony Davis
(31:22):
the max flexibility, which I think is probably what any
superstar in the day and age wants. Bill orm joining
us covers the Lakers to the Athletic Doug gotlip Show,
Fox Sport TRADEO. Uh, they got a two game road trip.
Then they come back home to a couple of the
bottom of the league teams Cleveland, Orlando. Then they go
to Houston, to Boston, to New York, to Brooklyn, to
Philadelphia before returning home for another the third match up
with the Clippers. Fair to say that this stretch in January, like,
(31:45):
are they are they Are they going to be in
that mode where they want to you know, they want
they kind of put the league on notice, or are
they gonna take some some breaks throughout this thing? You know,
I've been waiting for the Lakers take Branks all year
and they just and they haven't with the exception of
that stretch where they walk four in a row and
Lebron missed, you know, his first and only game of
the year. You know, to me, they've been um, they've
(32:05):
been knows to the grindstone the whole season. I feel
like there is a little bit of edge to this
team wanting to prove a point um in terms of
you know, them being real contenders. Obviously, they haven't lost
to a team below five hundred, so at this point
I think there's a lot of winnable games coming up. Obviously,
the road trip is daunting just by virtue of being
a five day trip over ten days. But I do think, um,
(32:28):
I do think this team is looking is kind of
looking for blood in the league. They've talked about wanting
to kill and dominate. Um, I don't see them really
taking breaks. Lebron has has really, um really passionately resisted
the idea of load management, and obviously Anthony Davis is
going to follow lebrons lead. So I think this is
a team that wants the steam roll teams all the
(32:49):
way in the playoffs, and then the question is do
they have enough left for the postseason at that point,
awesome stuff that is Bill Orum. Follow on Twitter at
