Kids stud h'm on, I g that's really all he
wants for his birthday. But he did have He didn't

(01:08):
have cake when he woke up, right, Like, you're literally
only eleven once, like, what do you want, dude? You
can't go out and do it, go anywhere. We can't
have friends over and he has friends face timing and whatever.
You know, what do you want? He's like, m M cake, Alright,
we got cake, ice cream cake, done, ice cream cake
for breakfast. Okay, sure we'll do that. We'll do that.

(01:33):
So it was done. Cake for breakfast, cake for breakfast.
That cake by the ocean. That that's a song. Cake
for breakfast. It was done. Doug Gotla show here on
Fox supports trader Brandon Weeden form a quarterback in the
NFL with the Cleveland Browns, Dallas Cowboys Houston Texans. Will
get his thoughts on Bill O'Brien and the comments made
by Michael Irvin that were apparently a story relayed by

(01:56):
DeAndre Hopkins after DeAndre Hopkins was traded from Houston to Arizona.
Brandon Weed after the hour, Bill self head coach of
the mythical National Champions. That's right, Ku wins the Big
Twelve doesn't get to play in the Big Twelve tournament.
Would have been the number one seed, potentially number one overall,
seeing the AP voted them the the the number one
team in the country. There will be no more Poles.

(02:18):
But for Bill self, who's only won one nation toutl
only and when like fifteen Big twelve titles, how does
that sit? How does it feel? We'll ask him. Solomon
Wilcox is gonna join us. Bob Kravitz gonna join us.
Covering the Indianapolis Colts. We got a lot to get to.
There's some Todd Gurly news. Will he be traded today?
Will he be traded very soon? Got some cowboy news
for you and the Dolphins. The Dolphins hot on the

(02:40):
heels of a quarterback and seemingly doing well in free agency.
Something I told you works, turns out it works. Let's
get to the story of the day, which continues to
be Tom Brady. He'sn't going to Tampa, although there is
no sign contract yet. They're working out the details. Devil's
in the details. But there's this story from Adam Schefter

(03:00):
which is kind of fascinating. I woke up to it.
I hope you did too. Veteran players have reached out
to agents expressing an interest in playing for the Buccaneers
after Brady joined the team. You're like, oh, is Tom
Brady creating a super team, super team. And I think
this is a this is an interesting question, right. It's like,

(03:22):
is the league buying in to Brady was the reason
the Patriots were good along? Now that Brady breaks free
of the Belichick regime, Brady has that kind of star
power of magnitude I feel like. And if you look
at the page from Julian Edelman, Julian Leman liked to

(03:42):
tweet about Dion Sanders and Deon Sanders saying, hey, guys
should go and play with Tom Brady? Was going with
him Julian Edelman, who is best friends with Tom Brady.
Clearly once I'll take it out of town. And what
is Julian Edelman's value if he doesn't have Brady getting
and Rock they don't have that kind of kinetic connection. Um,

(04:04):
there's a couple of things to this one. And this
this is to Edelman into other Patriots. This is it
relates to college basketball. College basketball coach gets fired or
a coach leaves, and automatically every player seems to put
themselves in the transfer portal. Should be pointing out the
transfer portal does not mean you have to transfer out,
although some coaches will tell you once you put your

(04:25):
name in the transfer portal, we're kind of done with you, right,
kind of done with you. Um. But but I've often
found it to be a mistake that guys put them
in their names in the transfer portal before before finding
out who's the next guy, right, who's the next quarterback?
If it's Andy Dalton, you're not in any Dalton, okay,

(04:49):
But you don't know if it's Andy Dalton, you don't
know if it's Jamis Winston. You don't know who it
is and what's your relationship. All you know is the
rumors of what you might have thought, much might have
been told. Until that your name, their name is signed,
and that's dotted. Nothing else really matters. And I look
at at so many of these guys in college basketball
in the transfer portal who do not have a new

(05:10):
coach yet, and I think to myself, Okay, why don't
you just there's there's really no rush, Like schools aren't
in session, They're not gonna have any finish up time, right,
Like there's a bunch of time between now and when
you have to completely figure out exactly what you're gonna
do and how you're gonna do it. I mean, let
me kind of give you an example here, Um, there's

(05:33):
a there's a big dude from Loyola Marymount Lota Merymount
fired their coach. I don't know about a week ago whatever.
Now I happen to know a little bit more about
this story, just because I know some of the coaches
that they're looking at. And this kid is seven ft one.
His mom his mom actually had died of cancer, and

(05:58):
so he took the year and he's like a double
double in the WCC and he's got himself in the transferport.
Now the transferport does not mean he has to leave,
but it's like he doesn't even we don't even care
who the next head coaches. The next head coach might
be the perfect fit for how you want to play,
and you've already said deuces. I'm out right Like It's

(06:22):
just it just strikes me as as totally odd that
guys would do that, and and that would be what
Julian Edelman would do, would would be doing. It's Matthias
Markinson is the big guy. He averaged ten and six
as a junior. He is a mountain of a man.
He's from Stockholm, Sweden, and he could shoot a little

(06:44):
bit as well, and look, he may transfer to up
higher level school and have a great run of it,
but he doesn't know who his next head coach would be,
much like Julian Elmand doesn't know who his next quarterback
is gonna be. Or maybe it doesn't matter. He just
wants I'm ready to be his quarterback. Here's the thing,
it's a lot harder to build a super team in

(07:05):
the NFL than it is in the NBA. It's a
lot harder and two and and Adam Schefter likened it
to the Lebron effect. Here's the thing. A lot of
guys didn't want to play with the run. Now quarterback
is different because you have no effect on the defense.
His style of quarterback because he's he can be so

(07:26):
accurate underneath it. It's not like it's Lamar Jackson, who
I don't think free agents will want to play with
just because the numbers will be down, their value will
be diminished because they won't have the catches. Even if
they have the red zone catches, they won't have the
volume of targets that you have. I mean, here's the
perfect example. Right last year, last year, the Houston Texans. Alright,

(07:53):
we're talking about DeAndre Hopkins. He had a hundred and
fifty targets, a hundred and fifty Obviously, he was their
go to wide receiver. He was their best and they
tried to feed him until he burped. That was the
tops on their team. Go take a look at the
Baltimore Ravens and how many targets all these guys got right,

(08:16):
Mark Andrews are tight end targets. Hollywood Brown, course he
only played four team games, and Hayden Hurster just got
traded because he wasn't in the ball thirty nine targets,
So some of it's about volume. Whereas guys will want
to play with Brady, they will, but it I feel

(08:36):
like it's a though. This is free agency that feels
like the NBA, and this is the first couple of superstars,
like Philip vers a superstar now he's a Hall of Famer.
Now he's well passed his prime, and Tom Brady's well
passed his prime. But they are superstars changing teams. We've
seen it before, We've never seen this rush this many
guys as free agency. Quarterback Mariota Winston's to switch teams,

(09:01):
um Cam Newton's gonna switch teams. There will be a
little NBA field. The difference is that it's much more
difficult to force your way out or to get out,
and the free agent market is much more slim pickings
in terms of, hey, get me to Tampa than than
any basketball set up. So could he in theory? In theory,

(09:22):
could Tom Brady create a super team? I guess? I
mean part of the reason that, part of the reason
that you went to Tampa was because they already had
some pieces in place, and you felt like they needed
a right tackle on and some help at running back. Right,
you already had Chris Godwin, you already had Mike Evans,

(09:43):
you already had Brashade Perramid, Oh j Howard and Cameron Brait. Like,
you're already kind of good there. So I don't know,
this feels like a An Edelman tweet. This feels like
a schefter trying to act like this is a Lebron
thing when it's not. Keep in mind, the Lebron to

(10:04):
Miami worked, and even though they became the villains of
the league, one of the big reasons it worked was
because they also ended any sort of title hopes. Of
two teams in the East, the Cleveland Cavaliers had won
fifty one games or so sixty one games, right, and
he left, And then the Toronto Raptors were a playoff

(10:25):
team and Chris Boss left. Those are both Eastern Conference teams.
So in addition to building up a super team, you
destroyed a team within your own conference who you would
have competed against. That's not the case with Brady, right.
That would be like if Brady was able to reach
out and get Julio Jones, that would that would change
things a little bit, wouldn't it. Yeah, Or if if

(10:47):
Brady was able to go and get I don't know, uh,
you pick your running back a Christian McCaffrey or or
maybe better yet, you know, we need an NFC NFC
running back from a really really good team like that's
that's Zeke Elliott or Alvin Kamara. And if Tom Brady

(11:08):
and Alvin Kamara joined Tampa Bay, now the sudden you
have the super team, like what happened in Miami. And
and conversely, when he left Miami, Wade was over the hill.
And Wade eventually left and Chris Bosh obviously no one
saw this coming at Blood Cots he had to retire.

(11:28):
So Miami went from the best team in the East
to losing their three best players all in one fail swoop. Yeah,
that's one of the reasons that they weren't able to
dominate with the Lakers last year and then this year.
It wasn't that New Orleans was great, but they were

(11:49):
a playoff team and he took away their best player.
And then again through no faull to Lebron steps out,
Clays out, k D leaves right, Golden States down, Houston
retools itself. Yes, the Clippers rose up, and look at
all the other teams in the West. They weren't competitive
with the Golden State Warriors. So it feels like a sure,

(12:12):
I'd love to play with him, But the reality of
it is, football is not like basketball terms of contract.
It's much harder to do. And I don't see all
that much movement outside of a Patriot here or there
that's not on the Detroit Lions, or not on the
Tennessee Titans. Then going to UH to the Tampa Buccaneers.
It sounds good, it feels good. The reality of it is,

(12:36):
it ain't gonna happen or the likelihood of anyone anything
big happening, And like, look, you don't think the Patriots
know that if they were to trade Edelman, it would
be for sorry Buccaneers, pirates bounty. Speaking of Brady, seeing
Brady signed for thirty million dollars this season, right, the
most accomplished quarterback in the history sports signs for thirty

(12:59):
million dollars. I don't have you guys seen the Tannehill
numbers or you guys have seen some of these other numbers.
This is the this is the market. This is the market.
The market has been set. I'll tell you how that
relates to Dak Prescott. Be sure to catch the live
edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.

(13:20):
Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio, a app Doug Gottlieb Show, Fox Sports Radio.
The official numbers haven't released because Tom Brady hasn't signed
his contract yet, but the expectations are that he he said, hey, Man, Chargers, Tampa,
here's I'm looking for thirty million a year, guaranteed two years.

(13:41):
And they both said, alright, fine, Um, Ryan Tannehill's contract
and and help me out with the with the actual details, guys, Um,
I believe the actual guarantee money is a little bit
less than what had been reported, which was you know
somewhere in the it's it's twenty nine point five million

(14:05):
per season. But it's a little light of that, right,
a little little lower than that is million guaranteed over
three years. Right, they're spread out over three four years.
Excuse me? So go ahead and do the do the
kind of do the math on that. And then you
look at Kirk Cousins, who, um, they changed some of
the salary structure this year, then he's going to be

(14:28):
I think it's like what thirty three for two going forward?
None of these guys are over thirty three million dollars,
none of them. And they're just there isn't an open
market out there. And and look, do I think that
Dak Prescott has more in his tank leftonist tank than

(14:49):
Tom Brady? Yes? And I know you get paid in
the NFL for future performance, But you tell me where
in the market it states that Dak Scott would be
making thirty five on the open market. It's not there.
It just isn't there. So I think it's interesting that

(15:11):
the Cowboys, you know, by by offering this tender, which
you know, I know he does not have to sign
whatever but had you allowed him on the free agency market.
Russell Wilson is making thirty five year Ben Roethlisberger's thirty
four years, Like, do you wanna know why Ben Roethlisberg
is coming back to play? It's because the thirty four
million dollars. That's why that's gonna be a bad contract.

(15:35):
There's a lot of people in football that don't know
Ben Roethlisberger's ever going to be anywhere near what he
was before. Aaron Rodgers, Jared Goff and he and if
you want to compare to the Jared Goff thing, that's
fine you can. It's a bad contract. It's not as
bad as Todd Gurley, who the Rams are trying to trade,
but pointing out like oh what Jared gossiping, that's a

(15:56):
bad deal. Kirk Cousins thirty three million dollars a year. Now.
Part of Kirk is one he did win on the
road in the playoffs. To remember, he sacrificed the two
years of the franchise tag and then put himself in
this position. Carson Wentz thirty two million a year. A
right Dak would make thirty million dollars this year as

(16:18):
a franchise Taggie. Thirty point one, I believe is the
number that's more than Matt Ryan, Ryan Tannehill, Jacob ber St,
Jimmy Garoppolo, Matt Stafford, Drew brees Um. And it's slightly
more than Tom Brady. And you know what that's about, right, right?

(16:42):
If he was on the open market, that's about the
number he would hit. And and so people are aguling
with the Cowboys should have got it done earlier. Why
the markets actually played out to where they're about? Right?
They nailed the number? Right? Do I think Ryan Tannehill
is great? No? Now? But Tennessee kind of had to

(17:02):
say face, kind of had to overpay him a little bit,
and even that it's not a huge a lot of money,
but it's their way of spreading it out. And he
wants to shorten candensed contract and he wants to be
highly paid. I don't see it. We mentioned this before
before the franchise tag whatever, like allowing Doc to go

(17:25):
and explore the open market, like, go for it, go
for it. Who's going to sign him? If the Bucks
had a choice between Brady and Deck, do you think
they would signed signed Doc? Of course they wouldn't. Do
you think they would sign Doc at thirty five million
over Brady at thirty Now that's how like this is.

(17:46):
This is what happens with people and and honestly it
relates to our economy right now. You know when when
Bernie Sanders was leading the Democratic polls, We're like, man,
I don't want to socialist, and he's like, well, it's
a democratic socialist. Little different. Now it's socialism. I want capitalism,
do you well, then you if you want capitalism, you
gotta tell President Trump to stop with the one trillion

(18:09):
dollars in bailout because of the financial disaster we have
in front of us. That socialism. By the way, it's
not pure capitalism. If you want pure open markets, if
you want really, if you want really to know what
Dak Prescott's real open market value is, cut him, let
him explore. The money's not out there. Nobody's paying him

(18:32):
thirty five million. The Cowboys shouldn't have to be sure
to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show
weekdays at three pm Easter noon Pacific. Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. Brandon weedings, the former quarterback with Cleveland
Browns with Dallas Cowboys and using Texans. He joins us
weekly here on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio.

(18:53):
The story of the week, obviously, is Brady in Tampa.
What do you think? Yeah, you know, I've been telling
you for last hunt that I thought he'd stay put,
but obviously there's there was something going on up there
in New England and and uh, you know, he kind
of saw his way out of I think it's a
pretty good fit. I really do. I think a lot
of people are kind of probably cut off guard. But
you know, you start with the head coach, which is
a you know, quarterback gurus. He's coached a lot of

(19:15):
really good ones, and then you know, you look at
the weapons around him he's got. He's got a couple
of really good receivers, a good lung game, good office line,
and the top five defense. So you know, just like
everybody else is gonna be weird seen him in another uniform.
But at the same time, I think he's uh yeah,
I think he's put in a position where, you know,
they got a chance to gonna make a run at it,
arians he isn't. And I know he's not calling the

(19:35):
plays left, which is which means Brady will but isn't
Arian style generally to throw the ball deep down the field.
They like to take shots. But you know he's got
the guys to do that with Godwin and Mike Evans
is one of the bigger, more physical receivers. So they've
got the they've got the bility. You know, Brady's got
plenty of juice in his arm. I mean, he can
still throw the deep ball as accurate as anybody in
the league. You know, maybe you know my home's this,

(19:55):
but I mean he's got plenty of plans, juice, uft
in the tank in his arms. So yeah, they like
take shots. You know, you like to play accent, I
take shots. I think Brian or Byron left, which is
a is a good office of mine. So I think
between the two or the three of them, Um, you know,
with with the twenty years of experience of Brady's gotten,
McDaniel's tree and that system, I think, you know, the
recipe is good. I think they got a chance to

(20:16):
make a splash. I'm interested a guy who's been so
much has been underneath the past ten years, you know,
with Brady uh with deadly accurate and he he did
used to throw a great deep ball with Raindy Moss
and maybe he hasn't had that guy, you know, is
it is it his arm or is it the offense?
Why were they not taking nearly the deep shots over
the past past past ten years? Right, That's that's that's

(20:36):
my question. That's the question. Yeah, you know what, but
like you said, they really haven't had that deep threat.
You know, they haven't had a guy that I can
really think of that you know, since Rany Moss it
could take the top off and and you know, run
by guys. So you know, now they've got a couple
of guys who can do that. So we'll see. I
think it's uh, I think it's got a chance to
be good. You know. It's uh the division with Breeze
coming back, and you know, that's just that's gonna be

(20:57):
a tough division if I wanted to watch it, um,
and I'm you know, I think everybody will be on
the Edger sheats, you know, just anxious to see what
he can do. You know. With the change of scenity, Yeah,
you got Teddy in Carolina. People think they're tanking. I
don't know if they're tanking with Christian McCaffrey and a
new crew. Uh, and then of course Atlanta, who did
turn things around late, but they were a disaster to
start the year. But they have Matt Ryan, they have

(21:18):
Julio Jones, and what we'll see what what they get
throughout there, Bright and we and our guests in the
Dug out Lip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, Bill O'Brien,
what's he like? You know, he's a he's a great guy.
He's a great guy, very outspoken. Um, he doesn't he
doesn't hold his words, and he does it how he feels. Um.
You know, I don't know. Obviously they saw what he

(21:40):
supposedly said to Hop on his way up you know
last whenever that happened. Uh, he's an outspoken guy. You know,
I'm still a firm believer that he shouldn't being complete
control that organization. I think they need to bring a
GM in there. I think Loulin over his head in
my opinion. Um, but yeah, you know, I think he's
not one of the the things. He likes the power, He

(22:01):
likes control. That's just the way he is. That's his personality. Um.
That's kind of what he saw with Bill Belichick in
New England. And you know, there's very few guys can
run to run a ship like that, and I think
that's uh what he's trying to do. And I'm not
real sure that it's the right recipe in my opinion.
That's just my personal opinion, I uh, you know, because
I just I'm scratching my head still, like, you know,
how do you get rid of the top one or

(22:22):
two receiver in the league. You know, the guy's not
making them. You know, he's making seven million dollars left
to the Maria Cooper and you know there's other I
know he made it one of some more money. But
I mean the guy has proven you know, well a
lot of people don't knows. In two thousand and eight
team my last year there, I mean, the guy played
through all kinds of injuries. I mean, the guy could
could barely practice, but he found a way to get
out there on Sunday and grinded out and still catch
eight or ten balls for over a hunter. And uh

(22:44):
it was a huge weapon. So you know, hop was
he was reliable comes Sunday. I mean, he was a
good guy, good gun the locker room. I was. I
was absolutely floored whenever I saw there making that move.
All right, So so the story goes this, Aaron Hernandez
mentioned of you know, he suppose the story said, I
haven't had a conversation like this since I have one
with here in Hernandez. That that was how Hernandez came

(23:05):
into it. And there's about multiply by baby mamas being
around him, something about his personal life that had occurred,
not this year, but like previously, and that there was
there was something amiss in their relationship for a long time.
You were there, did you feel that did you know
that the two didn't get along? You know, I didn't
see it that much. I always felt like, you know,
the only thing that I can possibly conceive friction was

(23:28):
is I think O'Brien was kind of getting frustrated that
Hop wasn't on the practice field, but he couldn't. You know,
he had good injuries, he had other injuries that kind
of I mean, he was he was did everything he
couldn't get ready for by the weekend. So I think
that was the only friction I may have seen is
is the frustration of having O'Brien. O'Brien's frustration was hot
and on the practice field, but as far as off
the field, I feel like they got along well. I

(23:49):
think that had a good relationship, So something must have happened,
Something must have happened by the scenes that uh you know,
I mean there was you know, there's other guys in
that organization that it was pretty clear that O'Brien wasn't
really high and I didn't really see Hopp is one
of those guys. Mhm um, what about de Sean? How
do you how do you think? How old do Shaun
handle something like this? Yeah, I've got that question. You know,

(24:12):
he's one of those guys. He's gonna keep his mouth shut,
do all the right things, sail the right things. That's
just kind of person he is. But I mean he's
a competitor. He knows what he had and DeAndre Hopkins,
I mean he knows you know what he's leaving there.
I mean that's just that's a big lossful. So he's
got to be frustrated, and if he's not, I'd be shocked. Um.
But again, he's not gonna say anything. I mean him
and Hopp were closest friends. Obviously, you know, everything that

(24:33):
Sean want to do in the passing game and kind
of started with Hopping and went trickled from there. So
it's gonna be a it's gonna be a big void
from the field. I'm not really sure you're gonna be
able to to fill that void immediately. Mean, wilfourd is
a really good player, but um, I mean keeping in
fit from hopping vice versa. So I don't know. Uh,
I'd be shocked if if, if Deshaun wasn't somewhat frustrated.
But you know that's the NFL. Man, It's a crazy league,

(24:55):
and things happen. Yeah, it is. It really is a
crazy all right. Right now, Doc is be scheduled to
make thirty million dollars on the franchise tag. We haven't
seen a quarterback planing the franchise tag since Kirk Cousins
did it two consecutive years. And then he benefited in
free agency signing a three year guarantee and then now
he got to your extension to that deal. There have
been something that said, had Dak won't show up, But

(25:17):
when you're it's different as a quarterback as opposed to
a running back. Now right now, nobody can show up,
so it doesn't really matter. He's got all the time
he wants on his side. Do you think Dak shows
up as a franchise tagging. I think he does. I
don't know where he should though, you know, and I
don't want to speak in the both sides of my mouth,
you know, I think they made the right call on
franchise again. I think he needs to prove for another year.

(25:39):
I mean, you look at the numbers versus these winning teams.
It wasn't it wasn't good. You know, they've got Maari
Cooper walked up obviously for another year. They've got Dack
locked up. But you know, to me, do it Kirk?
Did you know, have a as a as a proven
approven type year, you know, go out there and get
it done. Um, you know, and if he does this year, yeah,
I've been paid him in you know, and likely he'll servant.

(26:00):
But you know, I think he shows up because I
think he's a high character guy that wants to be
around his teammates and he wants to compete. But financially contractually,
I don't know that he should. You know. Unfortunately, that's
just the way that the NFL is with with the
franchise tag. It's just it's a that thing and usually
causes more friction than it does. Good. Where do you
think Jameis Winston plays next year. That's a good question.

(26:24):
You know, all these teams are getting filled up. I
don't know. I mean right now, honestly, I could see
him being a backup somewhere. I don't know if that's uh,
you know, maybe a Washington going there and place Dayne Haskins.
I don't know if that's a place for him. Um Man,
that's a good question. I'm trying to think of other
other opportunities where you know, there's kind of a not
a really a solidified guy at the number one spot.
I don't know. I know it through for ton yards

(26:47):
and ton of touchdowns, but those picks are gonna worry
a lot of teams. So I don't know. I can
see Washington being a possible fit, you know, and and
a good fit for him. That's a that's a that's
a piece of football team. That's a chance to be better. Yeah.
It's funny Washington. You know, Can Newton's former coaching staff
is now in either Washington or in Buffalo. To this point,
they have expressed no interest. Carolina said, hey, man, go

(27:08):
find yourself a trade partner. Um My question is if
Carolina and Washington and Buffalo Obviously Buffalo has a starting quarterback.
Carolina does too, But if they don't want him, why
should anyone else? Like Kems former league MVP, that I
don't know what he don't feel like he's a starting
quarterback next year? Yeah, I know, it's wild. You know,

(27:28):
it's you know, with Falls going Chicago and you know
there's a lot of talk about King going up there.
I mean, yeah, it's crazy. I think the big question
mark with Cam is the health, you know, the healthy.
Is he back to a hard per cent um? And
you know, everything that's going on right now, I don't
think doctors can can really fully assess him. So I
don't know, that's kind of the probably a million more
question for him and Jami's you know, just kind of

(27:49):
funding a suitor. So there's still you know, there's still
a couple of dominoes that need to fall in place. Uh,
there's a little time left, obviously, probably more time than
than normal with everything that's going on. Um, i'd be
shot that they're not both on rosters and at least
one of them potentially being the starter next year. Yeah,
how much does having somebody I called a rabbi in
the room, Nick Foles has traded to the Chicago Bears. Okay,

(28:11):
he played for Naggy in both Kansas City and Philadelphia,
UM their offensive coordinator, he played for their quarterback coach
was not only in Philadelphia, John d. Philippo, but he's
also the offensive coordner last year in Jacksonville. And then
you got Mitchell Drobisky, who's been there, right, the former
number two pick in the draft. But you when you
have like almost the entire offensive staff has worked with

(28:35):
Folds and seen him be successful before, how likely is
he to get a shot to start? You know, I
think there's a pretty good chance they're putting all the
fresh on Mitchell. I think he's you know, um, they're
showing look, you know, police is getting shorter and shorter,
you know, and get a guy that's won a Super
Bowl and Super Bowl MVP and it's been paid a
bunch of moneys and he's on the heel. So I

(28:56):
think it's kind of trying to motivate Mitchell st time.
But we all know what kind of guy Fulls is,
so he'll be a good guy in that room and
good guy in the locker room. So you know, it's
kind of a win win for Chicago. Much was not
getting done. Okay, you're able to throw a guy out
there that's got a ton of experience and you know,
a guy that can uh, you know, take over the
ship if need be. But uh, you know there, I mean,
it's some message from Naki to uh to Mitchell Robisky

(29:17):
you wouldn't even better get it going or you've got
a guy on your heels that you know we can
hand the ball to at any time and feel pretty
good about it. Yeah, yeah, that's gonna you were really
really interesting. Um, how much are teams missing? Like, at
what point does this essentially like a universal lockout start
to hurt football next year? I think it hurts these

(29:38):
teams that have new coordinators, you and new systems being
put in place where you know, they're coming into these
you know, new head coaches. You know, guys like in
Carolina and New York with the Giants, and you know,
all these new new teams, you know, new head coaches,
and they're trying to implement a you know, a structure
and a uh foundation and in the system, you know,
you're not able to do that and that's tough, but
you know, and in the draft around the corners, you've

(29:59):
got young guys coming in that you don't have no
clue about NFL football and what it's like, and you know,
the longer year away just you know, those days kind
of add up when it comes time for August to
come around. You know, you don't have the spring springs
coming underrated deal, especially for younger players. Maybe not so
much for the veterans, but you know, younger players that
you know don't have much experience in the NFL, they're
they're valuable reps. And I think you know, with with

(30:22):
the limited amount of time, you know, it's not you
can't learn these systems in the NFL offensively or defensively
overnight and shoot within a month, and you need you
need some time to grind on them. And unfortunately they
don't have the time to do it. There's a story
out of Miami that the Dolphins desperately want to get
Joe Burrow willing to move mountains. Is Joe Burrow worth
moving mountains for if you're in Miami Dolphins? Yeah, I

(30:46):
mean i'd like to say so. I mean, I mean,
you've had this conversation. I think I don't know. I
feel bad for them because you know, you go to
a place like Cincinnati that man, it's just been tough.
It's kind of like, you know, maybe not as bad
as Cleveland, but they have an amount of quarterbacks. But
you know, just um, it's not a recipe for a
young quarterback to go in there and succeed. So I

(31:09):
think Miami, given what they've done in free agency especially,
I think they put some really good pieces in place. Um,
I think Miami gives him a heck of a a lot
better chance to be successful from day one than Cincinnati. Though.
So if I'm Borrow, I'm I'm thinking, how come how
can I get down there, you know, versus the other
way around? But um, yeah, I mean I think he's
he's kind of a can't miss, you know prospect. I

(31:30):
think he's he's got the ceiling is really high for him. Um,
So I think I think it makes sense if Miamie
wants to move up and get him, I wouldn't blame
him one bit. Awesome, Um, listen, dude, be safe with
that that young family of yours. This is weird, weird
times and we love catching up with you. Awesome insight

at this time we play a game, but at this
time we got breaking news from Fox Sports. The Los

(32:39):
Angeles Rams have released running back Todd Gurley. He was
due ten point five million dollars coming up at the
top of the hour here, but instead the Rams let
him go. Todd Gurley, now our free agent after unable
to work a trade with another team. Was the team's
first round pick out of Georgia. In was first team
All Pro from the Associated Press teen but now Todd

(33:02):
Gurley a free agent again. The Rams let go of
running back Todd Gurley. Yeah, and I tweeted out earlier
today that it was more than just his contract and
his knee. There's some some some concerns, obviously sizeable concerns
about his work ethics. I mean, like he checked all
the box boxes for and Gurley had been by the
previous staff and obviously even by this staff beloved a

(33:25):
couple of years ago. But like, look, this is this
is the thing with NFL players, This is the thing.
I understand that there's some sort of belief that because
baseball players have the long guarantee contracts, basketball players have
the long diaranty contracts, the football players should be entitled
to them. The problem with it is whether it's work ethic, injuries,

(33:51):
or just the game evolving natural aging process, all of
these things kind of combined, Guys like a Todd Gurley
hurt any running backs ability to get a huge contract.
They just do you know, I mean, this is why
the whole Ezekiel Elliot will you know Todd Gurley got
that that's a bad contract. Don't compared to a good

(34:13):
don't compared to a bad contract. Um, so that's that's
pretty interesting. The Rams are releasing Todd Gurley. Cutting him
today spares the Rams from having to pay him an
additional ten point five million due today. Rams spent weeks

(34:33):
exploring a trade for him. Now Todd Gurley will be
free to sign with um with with any team. Yes, yes, Dan.
The Rams, according to mikel Afolo, also releasing linebacker Clay
Matthews as well. Yeah, Clay Matthews is can he can't
play anymore. That was that was this thing. You know,
look the Rams made, they made a couple of terrible signings.

(34:58):
Less need went for it, and then last year he
tried to tried to pat you know, he got claim.
Matthews was kind of done, and then they tried to
you know, okay, he won't practice every day, and then, uh,
what's my man's name? The safety why I'm not forgetting who?
Just who retired again? Right? Like Eric Weddell was going
to retire and they're like, hey, we'll give you a
two year deal. He's like okay, sure, you know, like,

(35:21):
why do you think Baltimore upgraded with Earl Thomas? It's safety?
Because Eric Reddell was brilliant, tremendous football player complaining more
claim Matthews tremendous players can't play anymore. Todd Gurley, really
good player, can't play anymore because the knee. And I
think there's some more ethnic issues there, like like do
people this is what I'm trying to tell you about

(35:44):
Tom Brady. I'm warning you, America. I'm warning you. I
don't know, Okay, I don't know which portion of last
year was Tom Brady and which portion was the wide receivers.
All I know is that old are free agents. You
have had most a year left, and most teams don't

(36:08):
just let guys walk superstars. They don't just let the
star players walk. Oh, Eric Weddle, you're a great player.
When just uh where to let you go? There's always
a reason. And when you're older, choosing because you can't
play anymore. I can't play anymore. So I just I

(36:29):
think I'll be interested to see where he where Todd
Gurley goes, Where Todd Gurley goes. Uh. Gurley signed up
for four years sixty million dollar contract turned out to
be a two year, twenty six million dollar deal. There's
still a lot of money for running back anyway. Um

(36:53):
Top five highest paid running backs in the NFL Ezeke Elliott,
Todd Gurley just cut Levyan Bell, possible trade candidate David
Johnson won't be cut, but clearly a lot of favor
in Arizona and Devonte Freeman who was cut. There you go,
yes surrund music. There's this from Jeff Darlington. It's a
tricky sitchen scenario facing the RAMS. Teams were reluctant to

(37:18):
trade for him because they don't know when they'd be
able to conduct a physical with their own doctors. Too
much mystery with the knee. So it appears that perhaps
another circumstance, similar to Cam Newton with this whole coronavirus thing,
some injury concerns and teams not being able to do
the usual travels or send private planes to check out

(37:39):
potential trade candidates, sort of giving them the cold feet
unwilling to make a deal. Yeah, I does feel like
convenient excuse. They've been working on trying to get rid
of Todd Gurley for a couple of weeks. You you
and I Ryan, We we had that story from I
think it was three or four weeks ago where they
had said, hey, we want to sit down with Todd
and see where he explain him when we're all at

(38:01):
you know, no need to have that discussion. If the
discussion is, hey, we planned on giving you twenty five
touches a game like we used to, right right. That
one is find another team, dude, find another team. Look
if you live in Los Angeles, so you know anything
about NFL football in l A, you know that this dude,
uh did not? The Rams were and and God bless

(38:25):
the Rams because they have not divulged. And maybe it
was to not hurt his trade value. But even going back,
not this season, the season before when his when his
play diminished and his carries diminished on their way to
the Super Bowl, they never once threw him under the bus,
not one single time. Like their coaching staff would be

(38:48):
asked their head coach to come out, he'd say, like,
I don't know what you're talking about. Like he's a
good player, good player. We gotta get in the ball more.
We gotta get Tiger at the ball more. They complete
denial of anything going wrong. So you know, I love this.
Then you've got people on Twitter NUIs scrugs, where's the

(39:10):
loyalty family? Hey, Knui, the guy didn't work hard, had
an arthritic k me it wasn't any good anymore. Got
twenty six million for two years and gets money. They
still him. I think sevenillion dollars. He has sevenion dollars
to not play for the Rams. We're supposed to employ
you and pay a tenmillion dollars when you can't play,

(39:31):
and we don't think you work hard enough? All right?
Coming up next, Bill Self joins the show. How how
does he encapsulate the season that leads them as the
number one team but not a national champion? That's next.
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug

I hope you're having a great day. I I know

com list in the I Heart Radio app. We appreciate
you were downloading the podcast. You can take us with
you wherever you're going, if you're going on a jog
or whatever. Getting out, Bill Self joins is he's the
head coach the Kansas Jayhawks. They won the Big Twelve again.
They were said to be a number one seed. The

(40:13):
a P voted them the number one ranked team in
the country. But but they'll only win a mythical Nationals tide.
I won't get a chance to win his second national
titles head coach of the Jayhawks, and he joins us
on Fox Sports Radio. First, and most importantly, how are you,
how's your health? How's how's everybody? Um in Lawrence? Well,
I don't know how everybody is, but my crew is

(40:33):
all good and players are all good, and you know,
I'm sure it's this way everywhere. But it's just been
so surreal to to go from a situation where you know,
you you just go to work. I mean, our offices
are shut down, we can't we don't even have access
to get into the building anymore right now, totally quarantined
and UH from the office and certainly UH recommended to

(40:55):
stay at home. So it's just a different world where
we're we're used to then we're used to obviously, how
do you how do you personally? I want to get
tell you what what you talk to your players about,
but how do you personally process it? Because, um, you
know last year you had some health stuff. Uh, you know,
you've had people trying to make you go to the
NBA and all this And meanwhile, all you've done is

(41:16):
take this team from one that lost at home to
Baylor and didn't look like you can win the Big
Twelve to the dominant team in the league and a
number one seed in a favorite to win national championship.
Like this is one of your great success stories with
some players that have really developed in the team that's evolved.
How do you personally process all the work that your
crew put in and you won't get a chance to
see it play out in March. Well, it's you know,

(41:39):
everything is relative. Everybody works. Uh, everybody has a story. Uh.
You know, everybody can can say their stories different, more
special than others. But the reality is that it's it's
it's uh, it has a really I'm disappointed obviously, but
but to me, what's going on around us at cly

(42:00):
uh uh, you know, lessen the disappointment because we know
that this is so much bigger than sports and and
and the fact that we're not playing I we would
have tipped off sometime tomorrow. Many of the teams would
have tipped off today. Half the teams would have chipped
off today. Uh. It is uh, it is disappointing, and

(42:21):
I know it's very very Uh, it's more disappointing pride
to players because coaches, we will, we'll, we'll live to
find another day. Whereas players, and for for any of them,
and like for a couple of mine, that's it. And
to put ourselves in a position to play for the
highest mistakes and and and and and maybe if things
fell right, have it to have an opportunity to to uh,

(42:43):
you know, represent KU in a way that that uh
uh you know, only so many teams get an opportunity
to do and uh I think that that's that's disappointing.
But a lot of people can say the same thing
as well. No, I know, but like a kid like Doke,
like you, Doke as a Bouquet, your star senior center
who had an incredible year, National Player of the Year candidate,
you know, uh he two of the two of his

(43:05):
four years, he's been he's been hurt. I just haven't
gotten a chance to play in the n s A tournament.
I mean that's where I I get you. There are
bigger things, and everybody does have a story. But that's
a kid who's developed, stayed, and big guys don't generally stay.
He has He's developed to where he can guard. You know,
you were able to switch with him onto guards, which
shows his personal buy in and his buying developing his

(43:28):
body and changing his style of play defensively, like to
not get a chance to see it all the way through.
It sucks. Oh no, no, it couldn't. It couldn't suck
for anybody more than it sucks for him. And and
there may be some equals out there, But do you
think about his his freshman year, he plays eleven games
on a on a team that was a a one

(43:49):
seed and had a chance. His sophomore year, he played
the whole season with the exception of the Big twelve tournament,
and uh, you know, made it to the final four.
His his junior year last year, were number one the
country and and uh uh end up kind of our
team kind of fell apart, you know, after he got
hurt and he plays in nine games last year, you know,
when we're number one, you know in the country, when

(44:11):
he gets hurt. And then this year, you know, right
before the Big Plump tournament starts, it's canceled. Four years
of college. You every played in our conference tournament and
and and there's so many there's so many players out
there that that have have have done comparable things in college.
You know, he's gonna be a first or second team
All American by everybody's voting. Uh. He was a Big

(44:34):
twelve Player of the Year. But but who has a
story that you you put four years of college in
and you keep coming back after injury after injury because
it will help you and then you know, the cumulation
of of everything and and and Okay, this is why
I came back, This is why, this is why what
we're gonna make it all worthwhile? You know, it gets

(44:55):
pulled out from under you. Uh, you know at the
last second. So yeah, I I feel for him and everything,
but but you know, he still got bigger fish to fry.
He's he's gonna get the last laugh in some way,
shape or form. But but it's certainly very very frustrating
and disappointing right now. This team or em beads team,
which had a better chance to win all Uh, I

(45:17):
would say this team, you know, you know with with Joel,
I'm sure you remember what people won't. But we had
a really good team and he goes down in in
uh in mid February, he's done. Uh. I mean, we
had a really We had a real chance that year
with them Beading Wiggins and and uh and Selden and
Mason and some of those cats. I mean, we were young,

(45:38):
but we we had a real shot. Uh Perry Ellis.
But but this team, though done, it was built different.
Uh and and you've been around teams that built different.
I don't want to say the most talented, but we
probably had as good a lead guard as there is
in the country. I mean, you could argue that, but
probably as good. We probably had as good a perimeter
defender as there was in America, maybe the best. And

(46:00):
we did have the best. And we did have the
best big man defender and in presence that anybody had
in America. Uh and and and we were tough and
and then they knew how to operate under pressure. You know,
this may not seem like much, but you know, we're
used to doing fairly well in our league Baylor Pizzas
at home. We know we got to run the table
to win and and uh and we did. And and

(46:22):
then you know, dealing with distractions. Who which team is
better at dealing with distractions, which is what the n
C Double A Tournament is largely about than us. You
know with all the craft that these kids have have
dealt with in some form or fashion. So I do
believe that this team was built up make a good run.
Of course that hasn't guaranteed success, but but certainly I
think we would have been in the game. Have you

(46:43):
seen DeVante Graham's Instagram where he's going back through KU
films and and commenting on I actually have seen a
couple of them. Uh uh he's born to tease board
of tears too, I can see. But uh yeah, my
staff sent me a couple of them, and uh, I
don't know if he has a future ever taking your job,
but but I found it quite entertaining. Why aren't you

(47:06):
doing that, I'm telling you, because obviously would be what
is that shot? Oh? You know, like if obviously there
there might be some bleeps that you'd have to put
in there. But I'm telling you you should. You should
do that. You should go through Davante same stuff and
and point and point out some of the things that
you would point out and coaching film, well, I would say,
look look at look at it, look at DT right here.

(47:27):
Good guy can't guard can't guard anybody anybody, but he's
gonna take the shot because he wants to be a
he wants to be a hero. I would definitely have
a different take on with him what he would but uh,
you know, I don't know. I I just since this
has happened, I uh, I've just kind of laid low.
I've actually I've actually done some things around the house

(47:48):
that that uh is very unexpected, that that I think
could could probably uh keep me on the plus side
for at least a couple of more months, I hope.
But uh, but for the most are and I'm just
chilling like everybody else the same. You haven't sold that house.
You always want you want to unload that big house.
Now it turns out comes into handy. Now you know

(48:09):
why we'd love we'd love to have an opportunity to
to uh maybe downside, we wanted to do that for
a while since the kids have left. But but uh,
with the way, with the way things are going, not
only healthwise, but but financially across America, I think we
need to settle in. I think we're gonna be here
a while. Yeah, I know. Um, there have been a
lot of questions and about about the NBA. You've continually

(48:33):
you know, shot them down. Why do those in your mind?
Why do they come up? I have no idea. I
think there's a couple of of h of sports people
that that, uh, you know, always looking to throw something
against the wall just to potentially see what could stick.
And I understand that, and uh but I don't know.

(48:54):
I I at one point in time in my career,
I think that that would have been something that would
have really intreage me. And and I'm not saying never,
but but uh but I I love my gig now,
and I love working with these guys and and even
like this year's team, you know, with with what kinds
of stuff that's been going on with us and hanging
you know, hanging hanging over our head. This it just

(49:15):
gave me so much pride to work with a group
of guys and basically said, hey, coach, we got we
got your back. Let's just let's just be as good
as we can be. And you know, it's interesting because
go ahead, I'm sorry, go ahead. It's interesting because you know,
when when obviously Roy Williams coach Williams thing it was,
it was different, but it was hanging over his head

(49:37):
for a while. There are a lot of people thought
like he just I'm done with it. I'll walk away.
This is you had you had some personal health issues
going back to last year. Obviously last year was kind
of a disappointing year, and plus he had the dope
injury and other injuries and all the other issues this year.
Did it reinvigorate you? Because this this kind of stuff
constantly having to answer the same questions which there aren't

(49:58):
appropriate answers at a US conference for does it make
you want to do it longer? And how does it
how does it change or does it change your perspective? Well,
I will say this that the one thing that that
is is strengthened more than ever. I'm not running from this.
I'm not gonna walk away from this. I'm gonna fight this,
uh tooth and nail and and and and the people

(50:18):
close to me and around me administratively, they're gonna do
the same thing. So so I mean I'm looking forward
to the fight. Uh, and it will be one and
and then the other thing is I think in a
strange way, it has invigorated me or motivated me, uh
and maybe the people around me, my staff or whatever.
Because the only platform that we have right now that

(50:40):
would be one in which we could get people to
look at us in a certain lights is to be
successful in to win. And that was one thing I
told our guys all along. I said, you know, if
you want a platform to be able to tell our story,
you got you gotta win. And and certainly our guys
bought into that and and uh and believed in that.
And so it is. It is probably more disappointing for

(51:03):
me this year than any year in my career for
this to happen, uh, just because I felt like that
there was extra motivation for us to put us in
the very most favorable position. If there's one thing you
can relate to people that allows the winning culture to pervade, right,
there's you know, like that's the there's there's something your

(51:26):
teams and I think Kansas had this since coach Williams
took it, but your team specifically, like you go into
these games it's like the Baylor game, like it was
the biggest game Baylor that ever played. But your guys
like this is every Kansas game feels like this, And
there's always this feeling that you're gonna figure out a
way to win, right, not just because you seem to
always find a way to beat Scott Drew's team. But

(51:47):
that's Kansas basketball. If you were to relay to the
common man who just turns on and watches, here's how
our culture works. Because the teams now and not all
your This team has some continuity from last year and
a couple of years ago, but teams in college basketball,
they change year to year. Your success and stayed the same.
What what is if there was a secret to it

(52:07):
that you'd say, like, look, here's how you build a
winning culture. What is it? You know? I I don't
know that you you put an exact finger on it.
And going back to your point about you know Baylor,
you know Scott, and they had an unbelievable year, unbelievable
and they handled us easily at our place, and and
we blow them out and beat them as bad as
we can by one basket at there. So I think

(52:29):
we were I think I think we were fortunate in
that situation. But but but the thing about is these guys,
I don't know, I don't know what it is. But
but but success breeds success, and you know, not being
the one that fails, not being the one that that
does what is expected, and the expectations, regardless of of

(52:50):
how fair or unfair they are, they're there, uh, regardless
of who suited up. I mean, it doesn't make any
difference if if if, if you're leading scores out, there's
not an asterisk next to it when you play the game.
I mean, it's a bottom line business. You've got you
gotta deliver, and and I think our guys have bought
into that in a way that that's probably as good

(53:14):
as anybody has anywhere. I think the expectation to win
by themselves and and the level that they hold themselves too,
I think is higher because of ex players and things
like that. Then just that just believe this is who
we are, this is how we do it, and and

(53:34):
you know this, this this happens in a lot of places.
But you know, our guys take great pride in winning
at home, and we have the best home court as
you know as anybody. Nobody can say it's better, maybe
some can say it is good, but but the bottom line,
take more pride went and away from home. Our guys
take more pride of of of of having a Tide,
having it to be a Tide huddle, and and knowing

(53:54):
that we gotta you know, we we gotta be more focused,
we gotta be more together. Uh, we gotta have better chemistry,
we gotta talk early, we gotta talk loud. Those are
things that that I think arts guys actually get more
enjoyment out of they're just playing a game and being successful.
I I think it's it's just a different culture. I mean,

(54:15):
and I don't know how you were with coach in
Oklahoma State, but hey, our home wins are never celebrated
like in a way win No man, listen to Bill.
I I've said this before. I celebrate. It doesn't matter.
It's better than the feeling, is better than sex. It
just is. There's there's nothing that compares to walking into
an arena where everybody's again to accept that small little
traveling party. You know, you get the little traveling party

(54:36):
of fans outside of that and the games over the
places silent. Everybody brought their pom poms, They left their
pom poms on their chair because they don't want anybody
to know they went to the game. And it's dead
silent except for your little your little traveling party and
your guys. That is that's a you feel like a
conquering hero. Conquering hero, right like you went into Rome
and came out with with a victory. All right, I

(54:57):
got I got two more for you know, you gotta
go one? Is this this would have been the first
weekend of the n c A tournament. Obviously you've had
nightmares in the past and a lot of success recently.
What is there an off the court? Is there something
about the tournament that you privately if you close your eyes,
Actually I really missed the most. Uh. I think it's

(55:19):
just the the the the uh, the element of competition.
I mean you everybody's experience experience good and bad as
the tournament. I mean, there's no doubt about that. And
we've lost in the first round twice going back. And
I can tell you exactly that we lost to. I
can tell you where they were, I can tell you
why we while we lost, how I didn't prepare them,

(55:39):
and then I can't tell you the wins. But I
can certainly remember those games and and uh. But to me,
I think it's it's the whole thing about competing for
a championship, the whole thing that everybody has the same
chance when the tournament starts. Uh, the whole thing about Uh,
you know, testing your own ability, your trade against others

(56:01):
that's the very best at their business. Uh. The quick
turnaround and how to make adjustments in a four d
eight hour period. There's so many things that go into
it that I think is what what really uh magnifies
what we do. Uh, you know, the ability to control
a team when there's so many distractions. Ability to get

(56:22):
them to believe it's their idea when it's all yours uh,
and to buy in. I mean, there's so many things
that go into it that I think is is challenging,
is fun, but but it's more difficult than what many
people can understand. And you, being one that does understand,
distractions are unbelievable. You know, it could be anywhere from
tickets to to a new family members to uh agents

(56:46):
too runners to NBA prospects if this is what you
need to do to postseason accolades to jealousy's there's so
many things that culminate right at this time, and it's
it's it's not an easy task. And then on top
of everything, oh yeah, I gotta play better than the
person I'm land that night when they may not have
near as many they're dealing with so it's a it's
a it's a it's a fun time but also a

(57:07):
challenging time, and I think it tests at our trade
more so than any other time of the year. Al Right,
last thing, um, Sindey has been through a lot. You
guys been to a lot IBus even this year with
the with the engine blowing out in the plane, which
you guys are travling with the team. So you said
that you've been doing some stuff around the house. Give
me one thing you've done around the house recently now
that you're on quarantine you hadn't done previously. I've totally

(57:31):
rearranged a three car garage in a way that that uh,
I think you could if if if you want to
look for something, uh Ei to z, you know exactly
where you look for that. So I'm kind of proud
about that. That's about the only thing I've done. I'm
getting ready to clean the back debt today, uh because
spring cleaning is a little premature, but I'm gonna get

(57:53):
into that. And as you know, who knows, maybe I
can stay Maybe I can stay on the plus side
as long as I possibly can. Hey, man, UH, enjoy
the time off. It is well deserved to know there's
really no time, officer, a lot of phone time, a
lot of face time stuff. But the meantime, congratulations and
marvelous season. We like everybody, bum we didn't get a
chance to see your team. We understand why. Thanks so
much for joining us. Hey, and I owe you an

(58:14):
apology for what happened a couple of weeks ago. So
I got caught up on something, so I'll get it back.
I'll make it up to you something. Well, we're good,
We're good. But there's there's the what's it called the fantasy?
What's fantasy camp is going to be in in the fall?
What's what's the what's the plan? Well, we don't know.
I mean, you got we we got a lot of
things going on. And as everybody does, I mean, how
do you handle camp? You pushed camp back to August

(58:37):
now hopeful or do you just go ahead and cancel?
And and uh, you know there's a you know, summer school.
Our students have been told they don't even don't even
plan on coming back here, don't You're not gonna get
in until summer school at the very earliest, which is
the first week of June. Uh, you know, it's it's
just a different There's so many things to worry about
and contemplate. But you know, and and now with this,

(58:58):
you know, with the transfer portal, and I know there
was talk initially, I don't know how much steam it
has in seniors getting an extra year, and then how
does that affect recruiting in rosters and all these things.
There's there's just a and and how the n b
A I'm sure you've had somebody on to talk about
how this affects the draft, how this affects combines, how

(59:19):
this what will happen if the NBA season is pushed back?
Does that push the draft back? Well, if it pushes
the draft back, what about kids have got to make
a decision whether or not they go to school or
not come back. I mean, there's so many things that
need to be address and discussed and we just don't
have really isn't enough time to do it right now.
But a lot of balls in the air, A lot
of balls in the air. Bill, thanks for joining us. Okay,

(59:41):
but see all right? Is that Bill self, head coach
of the Kansas Jayhawks. That's about as good at fifteen
minutes you're gonna get with the head basketball coach, especially
a really good one. My thanks dam a little extra,
little extra time. Uh. Coming up next, the Rams have
cut Todd Gurley cut, bad news for running backs around
the league and where he could play next year. Fox

(01:00:24):
the best in depth analysis. Uh, Solomon, thanks so much
for joining joining us. Uh, your health, okay, I mean,
like everything everybody Okay, Yeah, we're okay. You know, I'm
you know, my my eyes are on the bigger picture,
you know. I'm I'm thinking about our economy. I'm thinking
about people getting back to work and getting back to
their normal lives. But we kind of have to wait

(01:00:45):
this thing out. So I'm held up at the costa
del will cop and we're doing fine. Okay. So Tom Brady, now,
look the hit rate on free agents, especially older free
as It's like, I know he's been an all time great.
Are we sure that Tom Brady still has it to
get the ball deep downfield to all these weapons that

(01:01:08):
he's gonna have inherited in Tampa Bay first, you know what,
I want to go back then, because remember you and
I were on I came on with you at the
Super Bowl and you were asking me what what I
thought was gonna happen. I kind of just looked at
you and said, you know, I think Tampa would be
a good spot, and you kind of looked at me.
You thought I was crazy. You thought I was out
of my mind. Didn't you tell I? Did? I did?

(01:01:31):
I was I was wrong and I thought I said, no,
I'm telling you Tampa is the best destination, and and
and and that's because I know Tom Moore, know Bruce Arians,
I know what that offense has, and I know the defense.
So for the second half of the season was one
of the better defenses in the National Football League. Top
Bowls has revamped that secondary. They were the third best

(01:01:53):
coverage unit behind the Patriots and the San Francisco forty
Niners during the final eight games of the season, and
they had the league's number one rank run defense, and
we know they can rush the quarterback and they've got offense.
Of course, so I believe Tom Brady. He's always been
an outlier. As a sixth round pick. He was not
supposed to do this, and the six round picks don't

(01:02:16):
do what Tom Brady has done. But I don't know
if you've ever heard that quote that he says, and
and in fact, he said it doing an interview that
if you're gonna beat me, you better be willing to
sacrifice a lot. He said, because I know what I'm
giving up to win. That this guy's got the mind
I know of the late great Kobe Bryant, the Black Mamba.

(01:02:38):
That's what you're dealing with when you're dealing with Tom Brady.
He knows he's got to be surrounded by a better
talent at forty three years old, and that's why he
chose Tampa. The coaching staff is gonna allow him to
run that offense. They're gonna build it around him. And
now as we sit here today, players in free agency,
um like Emmanuel Sanders and other they want to go

(01:03:01):
to town. That's not happening without Tom Brad. Sam Wilcox
showing us on the Dug Out Lips show on Fox Sports.
Trading a lot of other big, big news, but let
me let me start with this. Jameis Winston. So now
he doesn't have a home um and look, he had
thirty interceptions, but he had thirty one touchdown passes through
four five thousand yards. Is there is there a coach

(01:03:24):
out there who can fix the turnovers? I don't believe so,
because I thought if it was gonna happen, it was
gonna happen with b A. It was gonna happen with
Bruce Arians everywhere Bruce Arians and and Tom Moore has
band quarterbacks of throne for five thousand yards. These are
the two guys who were in Indianapolis when Peyton Manning
was drafted in uh. Tom Moore was a guy that

(01:03:45):
called John Fox when he was in Denver and said, hey,
turn it over to him. He knows how to run
the offense. So they empowered Jamis Winston to go out
and play like that, and they got the good, but
they also got the bad and the ugly, and they're
gonna do that. They're gonna empower Tom Brady, but Tom
Brady is not gonna give you the ugly. So that's
where that upside is. I think Jameis Winston will find

(01:04:08):
a job, but only has a backup. Right now, He's
gonna have to prove, okay that he could be trusted
with the football. And people want all the goods, but
they don't want those turnovers. You just can't win being
highly productive in every statistical category but yet still turning
the ball over. Um, Todd Gurley was just cut by

(01:04:30):
the Rams. Is this is this buyer beware to anyone
who signs a running back to a second big contract.
Or is this simply a Todd Gurley situation? Hey, pay
attention to this now moving forward, because this our game
is changing for our very odd fact. Think back to
win the last time the running back was the first

(01:04:51):
overall pick in the draft. I think you might have
to go back to Joanna Carter. That's twenty five years ago.
Our game has changed no longer as it built around
Earl Campbell, Tony Dorset, Jim Brown. Right, all those guys
were first overall picked last season in nineteen the top
ten most productive running back, only three of them were

(01:05:11):
on their second contract Ezekiel Elliott, Carlos Hide and mark
Ingram all the other seven were on their first rookie deal,
the Alvin Camaros to Christian McCaffrey, and so there's gonna
be this buyer beware, just like the Rams were having
buyers remorse at four pm Eastern times, they had to
pay him another ten million dollars. Instead of paying them that,

(01:05:36):
they decided to go in and cut him and have
twenty million dollars of dead money on the books that
they can't even use to sign other players. So it's
it's big now. This this is a wave of the future.
And if I'm saying Kwam Barkley, I'm concerned. And if
I'm Dalvin Cook, right now, we don't know what kind
of contract he could expect to get from the Viking,

(01:05:56):
Christian McCaffrey. Same thing with the with the Carolina with
the Carolina Petres, Alvin Kamara with the with the New
Orleans Saints. Obviously Kamara and Christian McCaffrey. Uh, these guys
are hybrid guys right there. They can they can do
a little bit more, but you're you're right, I mean,
what what their value is is going to be fascinating,
fascinating future right now, Melvin Gordon doesn't have a contract.
You know, he's he's a free agent, and you know

(01:06:19):
he he gambled and lost last year's fascinating fascinating times.
Well Cam Newton, Well Cam Newton be a starter this
year in the league. I think it's gonna be tough
because right now, because of where we're at, I mean,
just let's face it, everyone is proceeding with caution in
terms of travel and doctor's visits. But here, here hanging

(01:06:40):
over his hand is the question of help. You've got
a show though that was a problem, and you've got
this list Frank injury that was a problem. Now these
are significant. It was just the regular stationary quarterback, you
wouldn't be just worried about the list Frank the issue.
But because it's Cam Newton and you know that part
of his game is his ability to run the ball
with power and to help few of the offense with

(01:07:04):
his legs. So you don't know if that component is
even gonna be there because he's coming off that list
Frank surgery. He's coming off shoulder surgery also, where at
this time last year it would hurt for him to
even throw the ball. So there's gonna have to be
a medical inspection and examination before a team with with
with sign up for Cam Newton. Right now, he's the

(01:07:27):
rights of the Carolina Panthers, so they're gonna have to
release it. I don't think any team's gonna trade and
give up draft picks for the right to what could
be damaged good. And I say that cautiously because we
just don't know what what would the New England pictures
look like this year? That's a good one, you know.
Tom Brady was like some good mass care. Right. You've

(01:07:49):
been on one of those dates in the past where
you get up close and then you can see through
the mask here and it doesn't look so good. Tom
Brady covered up a lot of the warts there, and
now those think those areas in terms of where they're lacking,
they're gonna be exposed. Um. I believe they've got to
bring in a veteran quarterback um to to compete with Stidham. Um.

(01:08:13):
We know Cody Kessler is only just a guy in
an emergency. Andy Dalton to me seems like the right
fit because I think Bill is gonna get a lot
out of Andy and he still is a winning quarterback
in the National Football League in his nine seasons he
took the Bengals. Now this is the Bengals. He took
them to the postseason five straight years, from his rookie

(01:08:35):
season through his fifth year in the league. He was
the all time winning his quarterback at TCU, where he
passed Sami Ball winning I think what forty six out
of like forty nine games as a starter there. So
the guy's got good pedigree. I think you'll be even
better with Bill Belichick. Uh, they're playing in a division
that can still be had. We did at extra postseason games, right,

(01:08:58):
So if the pay Andriess can get to the the eleven wins,
they can get to the playoffs. But I don't see
them being able to go much further than that. Doug

(01:09:19):
Um DeAndre Hopkins sent the Arizona Cardinals everyone's talking about,
and rightfully so Bill O'Brien and what led to some
sort of riff between the two, whether it's personal and business,
it feels like it. I haven't anybody mentioned the Cardinals, Like, look,
I get the Cliff Kingsbury didn't win in college, but
they did get better. I think they got the real

(01:09:41):
deal in Kyler Murray at quarterback. And now you add
a dynamic weapon who everybody mentions in the conversation the
best wide receiver in the Nation Football League to a
pass happy team. How how good can Arizona be? I
think they could be really good. You know Larry Fitzgerald
still on that team, like Kenyan Drake as a receiving

(01:10:03):
tight running back who's a weapon, massed up against linebackers
in the past and game. And I think they're gonna
draft I think they would love to get Seedee Lamb.
I think they would love to have a Jerry Judy.
I think they're gonna have another young talented receiver, and
we know this draft class is gonna give us plenty
of those. I think they can confuse. That's why receiving

(01:10:23):
corps round Kyler Murray with one more young talented receiver
to go with DeAndre Hopkins who has a tremendous pass
catching radius. Um. Yeah, I think they can light it up. Now,
they've got to get the defensive side of the ball fixed.
But I love the way this team is trending because
Kyler Murray. I mean, he's a good player. They got
to protect him. He's got to continue to get better. Uh.

(01:10:45):
He was the rookie of the year on the offensive
side of the ball, and I think he will get better.
Um as, particularly with the talent that you're gonna put
around it. Yeah, it's give me, give me fascinating. H Salomon,
thanks so much for joining us. Continued health, uh, and
we look forward to talking to you in the very
very near futures. Spar guest on Fox Sports Tradio, all right,
stay you too. That Sam Wilcox who did say Tampa

(01:11:06):
at the Super Bowl, and I was like, really Tampa,
really Tampa, really Tampa. Where the Patriots rank in the
a f C without Tom Brady. We'll discuss next. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb
Show weekdays at three pm Easter noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio Whap Doug Gotleiap

(01:11:28):
Show Fox Sports Radio. We usually do this end of
the first hour, but we had a guest we got
all jumbled up. We decided to do it right now.
Oh no, we Todd really got cut Todd really just
tweeted out, Damn, I got fired in my day off.
That of course is an ode to uh to Friday,
one of the great movies of my cow My, my,
my college days. So instead, let's get the game time time.

(01:11:53):
This is game Time Tide on the Doug Gottlieb Show.
What's the game day? By the game today? Doug is
I feel a draft? Right? We get the draft. The
topic of drafting today teams you think will represent the

(01:12:15):
a f C in Super Bowl fifty five. So we
are drafting all sixteen a f C teams. It's a
four round draft. It'll be a snake draft. John is
the first pick. Doug will pick second, followed by Ryan Music.
John is the first. This is the first pick. I
mean it, come on, there could be a trade, yes, well, yeah,

(01:12:38):
I think that there is. I think that there's there
are a bunch of picks. But this will help us
sort out where we are in the a f C
after the first few days of free agency. All right, John,
you're on the clock. First, could be the Chiefs, but
I'm not gonna take the Chiefs. Why wouldn't you take
the Chiefs. If you think that the John Robos is

(01:13:00):
a hot take artist. So this is sports talk radio,
my friends, and we don't go with the easy stuff.
I'm gonna take Lamar Jackson and the Baltimore Ravens. I
think this next year that comes up, he will be better,
he will learn from his mistakes, and I think they
have the team to go all the way to the
super Bowl for the upcoming season. I'll take the Baltimore
Ravens and we're the one seed this year. It's not
that awful pick, Yeah, it is. What was what was

(01:13:24):
the worst pick? The Browns taking Baker Mayfield number one
over Sam Donald or John Ramos taking the Ravens over
the Ramos Because because if you if you're gonna say
Lamar Jackson's gonna get better, wouldn't Pat Mahomes get better.
Here's here's my problem with it. Doug obviously wanted number
one for the Chiefs. John knew that and did not
make any trade off. Yeah, didn't even offer to trade

(01:13:48):
now the Ns like I wasn't even I was. This
is like I would have thought, he's the the Chiefs
of Joe Burrow. I'm not trading out of that Okay,
I'll take the Chiefs. Do I have to stay? Why? No?
There all sides call from being in the Super Bowl

(01:14:09):
two years ago, then they won the Super Bowl this year.
Unless Pat Mahomes is somehow going to get worse in
his third year as the starting quarterback after win the
MVP and Super wo may be like, this is an
easy one. I'll take the Chiefs, alright, Ryan Music, Yeah,
this is tough. I'm I'm torn here between a few teams.
But can you even send them out there? We can? Yeah,

(01:14:29):
I'm leaning. I think I'm gonna go with the Bills.
But I'm I'm leaning also Chargers and Texans, but I
think given the trade for Stefon Diggs, I think Josh
Allen will continue to improve. The Patriots are no longer
the dominant team in the a f C East. I'm

(01:14:50):
gonna go with the Bills. Interesting. Interesting, I was actually
kind of hoping Buffalo would fall to me at number four.
I've got two picks back to back, and then Ryan
Music is on the clock. Guys. I've I've said it before.
I've said it when I filled in for Doug, when
Dougs in for Colin Cowherd doing his thing. I believe

(01:15:12):
that the Patriots. The single the single person who was
most responsible for the Patriots success is Bill Belichick. So
I will take the Patriots fourth. That's not a crazy pick.
Not a crazy I will take New England fourth on
this list. The Texans and Titans match up. You know what,

(01:15:36):
give me the Steelers in a healthy Ben Roethlisberger. Interesting
like that one, Dan? Really okay? That makes you like
it even less, Dan, I'm gonna go I'm gonna go
with I'm gonna go at the Houston Texans. I'm not

(01:15:57):
sure exactly what Bill O'Brien the GM is doing, but
Bill O'Brien the head coach has been good enough, and
Deshaun Watson has shown that he can sort of make
it work even with a curious cast of characters around him.
I I agree. I mean I again, I like all
those we're all storking around. I just my thing with
the one verse. Everybody else's there is clearly I mean,

(01:16:17):
outside of Ramos, everybody feel like there's a drop off
with the rest of the teams. Right, doesn't mean that
you're not all mentioning good teams. Um Alright, So here's now,
I have I have one. Okay, yeah, you're picking them,
John picks, I'll go Chargers. Um, you know it's it's
a lot like the Bills, and of course, to Rod
Taylor led the Bills to the playoffs. I'm not in

(01:16:38):
love with the quarterback position if it's Tarrod Taylor or
or Tua or whoever they they end up drafting. But
everything else, you know, they got Brian Balagan now as
a tackle. Um, they've obviously, you know, fixed their their
guard position with the trade. I'm gonna trade Turner. I'm
gonna I'm gonna take the the the LH Chargers. People

(01:17:01):
forget Derwin James didn't play last year. This is a
loaded team. I think they're going to get to the playoffs.
I just don't know if you can win at quarterback.
I'd like to offer John a trade for this pick.
I'd give him twelve and thirteen for number eight. John,
would you do that deal? Well, I would to take
a team here at eight. Okay, then I guess no, no,
because I'm guessing I'm gonna take that trade because I

(01:17:22):
don't think you're gonna pick this team. That's why I
would give you that trade. So John's gonna have my
final two picks, John John, John, John, John, can I
step in here? Don't trade this pick, trade the next
pick you back to back. Come on, man, I think Denver.
I think Denver is gonna be on the up swing.
I'm picking the Broncos at eight. I wanted to jump

(01:17:45):
up and get Denver in this in this deal. Alright, yeah, John,
Now it's then. I actually I'm glad I made that
trade because guess what, I'm taking Brian Flores and the
Dolphins number eight. I like him, I like Fins, I
like the coach. I think we just talked about we
just talked about blot check being the reason for the Patriots.

(01:18:07):
Why not Brian Floors a reason for the Dolphins. So
I'll take that number nine at thirty seconds, all right,
I got, I got, I got two? You got one? Uh? Oh,
I got one. I got I'll take the Tennessee Titans,
just in the playoffs and running it back. Tennessee Titans.
I think we're out of time too. I'll go with
the Cleveland Browns. You got the Browns Browns, John pick John,

(01:18:29):
I'll take the Colts. The Colts, John, you got one more? Uh?
We got three seconds? Oh? Well, be sure to catch
the live edition of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays
at three p m. Easter noon Pacific. Kind of weird, right,
that tanking has a negative connotation, right, as a negative connotation. Now,

(01:18:53):
a couple of things that you heard on the Doug Golly,
have you been listening. We've been on air here on
Fox Sports Trade almost three years. Uh. I've done this
show at two other networks, and um we've left in
goodstead radio wise, and you know, like, look, not every
take is is hits, but I do get a lot

(01:19:14):
of the stuff I get from people inside these industries.
You do it long enough, and you treat people right,
and they give your stuff. This is going back a
couple of years ago. I'm gonna say three years ago.
Three years ago. Yeah, around now, right when I started,
I mentioned Brian Floor is going to be a head
coach next year in the league, next year in the Lake.

(01:19:36):
And I know people who interviewed him before he was
really read they're you're not ready yet, and he's another year,
and sure enough last year he got the job. You
combind the fact that people really like Respect Flores knows
what he's doing. He's got a really good way about him.
On the other hand, he's very very bright, very bright.

(01:20:00):
So there's like Belichick with more personality um and Belichick
actually has personality, just doesn't choose to share in front
of the cameras. And then you have the Dolphins who
have forever been mired in this kind of mediocrity. They
haven't solved the quarterback position since they lost am Marino.
You know, had Chad Pennington for a while at Jay Fiedler,
you had Ryan Tannehill before here at this knee. You know,

(01:20:22):
he tried to come back early. Then he heard his
arm two years ago. So they decided to tank. They
decided to tank. And from you know, from trading their
left tackle to trading Minka Fitzpatrick too. What they did
with the took a shot at Josh Rosen really no, really,
no skin off their teeth. It's probably won too many

(01:20:44):
games last year. Why because he's pretty good coaching, really
motivated the guys defensively. They've they've added Kyle Vanoi four years,
fifty one million. Of course, he believes in Flores, having
worked with Flora's before back when Flores was in was
in New England. Shack Lawson come over Byron Jones, who
they had to pay a bunch of money to now,
but they went and Byron Jones is best cornerback on

(01:21:06):
the Dallas Cowboys. They win got them on offense that
they've added Eric Flowers, trying to get something out of
Eric Flowers and Jordan Howard. Two years ten million is
a reasonable sum of money for a productive back, although
one who there was some concerns because of how John
Fox choosed him a couple years ago, might not be
a lot of treadleous tires. Those those fears were proven

(01:21:29):
to be unfounded. Now they have three first round uh
three first round picks this year. Miami's there's they have
Pittsburgh's that's the Bank of Fitzpatrick trade, and they have
Houston that's the Laramie Tuncil trade. They also have their
own and New Orleans second round picks. They started Owen
seven trade away Laramie Tunseil trade away Manke of Fitzpatrick.

(01:21:50):
People wondering if they're the worst team in NFL history.
They finished five and four, even beat the Pats in Foxboro.
Now they have a not only the you know, some
teams trying to do the Redskins have tried to only
build through free agency. The Bengals have tried to only
build through the draft. They're actually doing both now. I
don't know. I mean, part of the search for Burrow

(01:22:12):
does give me a lot of concern about how they
feel about Toah's hip, because everybody thought to it was
better to start the year. And maybe it's a smoke screen.
And I don't think since Nati trades out of it,
they should. You know, if you're since that you've got
a depleted roster. You can only build through the draft.
Go hey, give us all of your first and second
round picks and you can have Joe Burrow. That's what

(01:22:34):
I would do. That's what I would do, and I don't.
I don't if I Miami, I wouldn't do it unless
I value Burrow that much more than I value to
U because two will probably be there, you know, but
they're starting to put something together. I don't think they're
going to try and skip steps and win a Super

(01:22:55):
Bowl this year. But this is the first year of
putting together. You have a young quarterback, and by year
two that will be the expectations. And I think those
are reasonable. And oh yeah, by the way, I said
this before, and I'll say it again. Taking works. The
key is they went all in on tanking, and they
also hired a coach who was only experienced away Like,

(01:23:17):
they didn't hire a coach who's gonna be a placeholder
of Brett Brown, if you will. They hired a coach
who they think could be a championship coach. But he
just needs some experience. So give him some experience. And
look what he did. He got better, The team figured
some stuff out and they won some games. Doesn't he
does doesn't even playoff experience yet, but he'll get some.

(01:23:37):
You know, the biggest problem that tanking teams have is
they just they bail on it because it doesn't It
doesn't feel good and people pointed out and they feel
like bad people for tanking. This strategy quite obviously works.
You gotta go all in on it. You gotta have
everybody from the general manager to the head coach. The
head coach and general manager are working together on it.

(01:23:59):
That was problem in New York the the Jets. The
Jets tanked, Hey, but you had an inept general manager
who just made some terrible decisions and he felt like
he had to win games and he wasn't lockstep with
his head coach. But I think this Miami thing works,
I really really do. And I think that Flores and

(01:24:20):
the way in which they've executed things, uh, not perfectly,
but seeming like they have a plan in place right.
The plan doesn't always have to work out perfectly, but
as long as you have a plan and things make sense,
you have a lot more buying from people. Fox Sports

For years, he's covered the Indianapolis Colts and what what
was long rumored has in fact taken place. Philip Rivers

(01:25:04):
gonna be the new quarterback of the Colts. Boba, we
convince Philip Rivers still has it? No, absolutely not. I'm
getting a bit of an echo, so you might want
to fix that, But no, I don't believe so. I mean,
I think in theory they could be a nine and
seven team and have a chance to make the playoffs,
but I would have said that about Jacobe Prisette, who

(01:25:25):
was five and two last year and then got hurt
and then saw his entire receiving corps get hurt. So
I don't think this is a massive upgrade. What I
want to find out is whether this is the quarterback
end game for this season or not. You know, are
they gonna draft somebody in the second round or beyond

(01:25:46):
to who they can They can teach and they can tutor,
and you can do an apprenticeship behind rivers. But you know,
if it's just one band aid after another, I'm not
crazy about the idea. Who you know, the offensive line
is clearly better. What about the skill position, guys, Well
that's that's where they're gonna go. You would think heavy

(01:26:07):
in the draft. There are uh unbelievable number of wide
receivers who are considered first round or early early second
round talents. Um. And really, I mean the depth goes
through the fourth fifth round with wide receivers. So I
fully expect them to go heavy in the draft. Um.
But you know last year you had t Y Hilton

(01:26:28):
on one ft um, Zach Pascal came out of nowhere
and played decent, but Funch just got hurt um, Paris
Campbell got hurt Um. They missed the entire season essentially,
So um they that's a huge area of need for
the Golts. Doug Golive Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
Bob Kravitz, our guest senior writer for The Athletic, what

(01:26:52):
are your thoughts on on Brady going to Tampa. I
think it makes sense. You know, I'll be curious, having
been around Bruce Arians for for a number of years,
I'll be curious to see how he works his offense
with Brady's uh you know, concept of the offense because
Bruce Arians is the no risk at no biscuit guy.

(01:27:14):
He likes to throw the ball down field and Brady
does you know it doesn't have that kind of armed
talent anymore. I hate that term. I don't even know
why I just used it, but um so, that will
be interesting. But uh uh, Look, I think Bruce Arians
is really sharp. He knows what he has and if
they can surround him with a with a good defense

(01:27:36):
and a better offensive line, I don't see any reason
why they can't beat serious contenders. Yeah, I agree with you, though.
You have a guy, a coach who and he's I know,
not calling the place technically, but a guy who likes
to push the ball down the field. And that's not
at all how Brady has played. No, no, And look,
you know the thing is that if Brady is going

(01:27:56):
to have some weapons and Godwin and um and the
other guy whose name is escaping me right now, but
say they Mike Evans, thank you. Um, they have weapons
in Tampa that he certainly didn't have in New England. Uh.
You know you have to go back to Randy Moss.
Remember the last time he had a guy who could

(01:28:17):
beat you deep? Um, So I would think that, you know,
I think they'll reach in a chord of sorts where
you know, Brady will go down the field a little
more than he probably used to. But he's not gonna
be like Jameis Winston, who I think average like ten
eleven yards per per completion, which is you know, I
mean he also he also through thirty interceptions or something

(01:28:40):
along those lines. Yeah, I have thirty interceptions and thirty
one touchdown bosses Bob Kravitz joining us, Um, okay, so
what do they do with Jacoby? What happens with job?
That's a good question. Um. You know they have from
what I understand they I mean, obviously Jacobe knows what's happened.
They reached out to him. Um, you know, when this

(01:29:01):
whole thing was going on with Philip Rivers, I would
think that they would like to move him, Uh you know,
hold on to Hoyer, who's a lot less expensive. Um,
you know, I don't think they look at this as
a chance for to you guys to compete for the job.
Now you paid Philip Rivers million to start and be

(01:29:22):
your guys, So it's it's gonna be interesting how they
handle the Brissette situation. Um, you know, I don't know
what the market looks like when Jacobe was was made
available earlier the last couple of last year. Actually, uh,
there weren't. There wasn't much of a market form. So
we'll see how that all plays out. But I would

(01:29:44):
guess that Jacoby Brissette will not be in Indianapolis next
Year's uh that that is fascinating. Um, Tennessee deciding and
obviously in division, Tennessee deciding to run it back. Houston
deciding to part ways uh with with DeAndre Hopkins. Um,
if you were a guessing man, we still haven't at
the draft Cracy. But if you're gonna stack him one

(01:30:06):
to three, who do you like in the division? Now? Well,
I hate Houston Now, I mean I have absolutely no
idea what Bill O'Brien is doing. Jacksonville seems to be
divesting itself of of of several big time players, including
Class Campbell. Um. You know, uh, look, I have mins
humania like everybody else. But do we really think he's

(01:30:29):
gonna be the guy for them? No? No, No, they're
they're they're they're tanking. I mean, they just they looked
at what the Dolphins have done and they're like, let's
just do that. They're in the Trevor Lawrence sweepstakes. It's
pretty obvious. Um, you know, I think Tennessee will continue
to be, uh, you know, probably the best team in
the division. But I don't think it's gonna be a
very good division. I think it's gonna be a two

(01:30:50):
team division. And look, you know, nine and seven was
good enough for the Titans to get to the playoffs
and get to the SC Championship game. So I think
that's the cults are probably looking at. But I think
the Titans, their entire team puts you add a rejuvenated
Tannehill to that mix. I think they're the They're the
class of the a f C South at this point.

(01:31:12):
Great stuff, Bob, thanks so much for joining us. Really
appreciate it. My pleasure. Bob Kravitz at b Kravitz on Twitter.
Of course, read his work in The Athletic. No one
seems to get the DeAndre Hopkins thing. I do think
it's about a good portion of it's about money, do
I think? And listen, Brandon Weeden joined us earlier and

(01:31:33):
he said that, you know, he was banged up two
years ago when Brandon was on the team, and he
didn't practice, and it didn't sit well with It didn't
sit well with him. And so you have a guy
who wants more money, threatening to hold out, doesn't practice
all the time, and not sure if he's on the
right side of his right side of his career age wise.
But boy, you better make sure you do a hell

(01:31:55):
of a job replacing him, and you might better use
that money that you were expending on him. I'm gonna
spend wisely. I think that's my biggest problem with the
David Johnson acquisition. I like David Johnson more than other
people do. I understand it's been a couple of years
since he's really been effective. But it's not like he
It's not like he's Todd Gurley and his body's taking
a beating or he's had you know, some some knee injury. Um,

(01:32:18):
you know, And and the money will get freed up
next year from him, which would allow them to pay
to Shaun Watson. Like all that makes sense, but man,
you better nail in the draft with a wide receiver.
You better absolutely nailed it. After you traded your first
round pick for Laremy Tunso, which made sense. Trade a
couple first round picks, two first round picks for a
star left tackle. That all makes sense because what's the

(01:32:39):
best thing you could hope for in the draft is
if you have two first rounders, you can get one
starting left tackle. That's a really good draft. I want
to get to this. I was actually watching an interview.
I think Adam Silver is brilliant. Now people listen to
the show know that I've been critical of Silver in
that I do think he's to lenient on players, to

(01:33:02):
leniing on players, like you don't have to like Roger Goodell,
his league financially doing better. Some of it is the sport.
But some of it is the leadership doesn't mean that
I don't think Adam Silver is brilliant. This was Adam
Silver talking to Rachel Nichols about the return of the
NBA and potential changes to the schedule. Regardless of whether

(01:33:23):
we had been going through all this. It's something that
the league office, together with our teams, has been spending
a lot of time on. And we have a lot
of our team owners who are technologists, media mavens by background,
and so it's something that committees of of owners and
league officials have been working on a lot, especially over
the past year or so. Yeah, obviously this will be that.

(01:33:44):
This is the old um, this is the old uh was?
It is the mother of all invention and necessity is
the mother of all invention. Like, they wanted to change
the schedule, They wanted to change this schedule, but you know,
you got the Olympics and you got again and now
you're forced to change the schedule. So let's try some things.

(01:34:07):
Try some things. I need to get through the Silver.
I think, you know, the idea of pool play into
a tournament for the tournament format would work. It would
give you a regular season games into your postseason games.
The problem is that you won't replicate it the rest
of You're not going to have that in the future,
at least I don't think you have that in the future,
although they have the pool play um in FIBA, so

(01:34:28):
maybe that's where you get it. Look, this could be
a blessing in disguise for the NBA, being forced to
make change, to move their schedule a good portion their
schedule away from competing with the NBA and maybe into
some of the summer months and only cannibalized baseball nobody
seems to care about anyway. And and also I we

(01:34:49):
have so quickly forgotten because we don't have basketball, and
it was on every night how their ratings were. We're
we're we're plummeting over the last two years since Lebron
moved to the West Coast. Goodell is brilliant and the
NFL also lucked out, And that this has happened during

(01:35:09):
a time of year in which his teams aren't supposed
to be on the field. But football isn't going anywhere.
And if you don't believe me, in the popularity of football,
it's not just that they have news and nobody else
has news. It's that the news is so big. How
many times in your mind if you thought about Brady
going to Tampa this week? How many times your mind
you thought about your bracket that you didn't fill out.

(01:35:32):
I'm I've been a hoop guy in my whole life,
and i gotta tell you it's not that they don't
miss it. I do miss it when I think about it.
But I'm so there's I'm so overwhelmed by all these
NFL stories and now the league is reshaping itself. It
hasn't been as you know tonight, right right now, we'd
be all be watching games, no question, we'd be complained
about a bracket staring. Oh I'm such an idiot. Why

(01:35:54):
did I do that? People be texted me, help me out.
I need a winner, I've had a bad morning, you
know all those things. Yes, s Ryan, you had a question.
Do you think, with all of this fallout from sports
being put on hold right now with the coronavirus, that
anyone will not just consider perhaps shifting their calendar, but

(01:36:15):
actually gives serious consideration to reducing the number of games
per season, or do you think that it's so tough
to walk that back now considering the revenue and the
TV deals that it's just not even possible. Um, Okay,
there's a couple of things to that. I think that
people are I And did I just mentioned in meetings

(01:36:37):
or have I mentioned it out loud the revenue before
everybody else talked about the revenue. I think it was
just in meetings because I believe a little bit not
a little bit online. But anyway, UM, I have said
this a million times to people. They'll never cut the
games because the number of games, because of the revenue

(01:36:59):
to you and not just the people who work in
the building, but all the bars and restaurants outside the building.
They would never do that now, especially like these businesses
can't survive. I don't care. I'm not saying I don't
care how many. It's great with the owners and these
players are doing and paying for people who work in
the arena, the hourly wage people and giving hundreds of

(01:37:22):
thousands and millions of dollars like that is awesome. But
all of these arenas are there's entertainment centers built around
these arenas. What happens to the parking people? What happens
to the restaurants, you know, the bars, the uber drivers,
like everything that's connected to it. You know, then you
have your local TV. All these the regional sports networks

(01:37:45):
that carry the only reason the regional sports networks exist
is to carry your local game. Spectrum sports in l
a right, and the perfect example of spectrum sports in
Los Angeles. Um, they pay crazy easy money to the
Dodgers and to Lakers. Now they don't have Dodgers and Lakers.
How do they survive? How all those people? And then

(01:38:07):
you know you've got sponsorships people have paid money to
have there there be the official whatever of the Dodgers
of the Lakers. Do you refund that money? Is it
to make good for later? How do you make it up?
I don't think the number of games change at all.
If anything, you will have to grow in the playoffs,
and they'll they may want to cut it back, they
won't be able to cut it back. And like, look

(01:38:28):
these people. You know, we're gonna have millions of people
laid off here in the next next couple of months
as long as this quarantine happens. Just business that can't happen.
Take out is you know, it's not think about this
for a seconds for a second, Um, I believe somebody
looked this thing up. It's like some people say, fifty

(01:38:49):
percent of your revenue when you own business is booze.
So as much as we think that takeout is going
to help these restaurants be sustainable, forget about the fact
that what about the waite staff, you know, what about
the bartenders, But just in terms of the bottom line,
you're not making as much money if you don't have
a bar and nobody orders a vodka gimblet and take out?

(01:39:14):
Can you owner vodka gimblet take out? That'd mean that'd
be interesting if you could. I don't think you can
accordning Blue big of your revenue is booze. I believe
that's actually higher now. And I'll tell you why Uber
has changed that. Uber and Lift has changed that because
people don't drive as much to a date or to
a bar to drink. That's not people will have a

(01:39:36):
second drink, you know, or a nightcap because they know
they're not driving home. They're not gonna get a d
u y. And so though though it says I would
bet it's more close closer to somebody owns a restaurant
can tell us at gottlip shows the Twitter handle, So
any anyway to answer your question Ryan, do they want
to cut games? Yeah, I mean that the competition would

(01:39:58):
be better, but players gonna get back money. No, the
owners don't want to make money, and the owners are
hemorrhaging money. Players are gonna be losing a lot of money,
and then all of the other restaurant, restaurant tours and
everybody else makes money based upon these events. So I
think there'll be an adjustment to the schedule. I think

(01:40:18):
they'll get creative to it. I think this could be
a good thing. Do I think they're gonna streamline the
schedule No, I think if anything, it will be bloated
and they'll start even though they'll start later than they
should have. Next year, they'll start earlier than you expect
because they need to start making that money and start
making up for all of this lost cash. Surprising news
in the NFL and the Super Bowl champion head coach.

(01:40:39):
I'll share it with you next. Be sure to catch
the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at
three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio WAP Doug Gotlip Show Fox
Sports Radio. Every day. This time we gets caught up
and all the news of the day in sports. We
call the press the press. Bio g bro. Another busy day, Doug.

(01:41:04):
We started out in the NFL with the Rams. Let
go of running back Todd Gurley today, less than two
years after he signed a four year, sixty million dollar contract.
Not surprising. Um, Look, there's questions about his arthritic knee.
He's clearly overpaid. He fell out of favorite with the
coaching staff. There's some work ethic issues that that they've

(01:41:25):
quietly let people around the team know about. Um I do.
I Look, I wonder what what his how much? How
much this is is left in the tank? You know,
if they're willing to pay him seven a half million
dollars to not play on their football team, man, I
mean I'd take Melvin Gordon instead of him if they're

(01:41:46):
the same price, and I don't think they'll be the
same price. You mentioned earlier about the top paid running
backs in the National Football League. Tom Pellicero of the
NFL Network followed up with a tweet that was similar.
I don't know if he was listening or not, but
right now he Chargers running back is fourth, is the
fourth highest paid running back in the NFL, and that
would be Austin Necklick. Yeah. Six, but it's like it's

(01:42:08):
six million. Yeah, I know, it's crazy. A year ago
we would have thought the fourth highest paid running back
may have been Melvin Gordon but had a much higher price.
But instead it's Austin Ekeler at six plus. The other
news from the Rams as they also let go of
linebacker Clay Matthews. The Joe Flacco era is over in Denver.
Broncos officially waived him with a failed physical designation. Yeah,

(01:42:32):
failed physical. Um, I mean he's he's had a bad
back obviously for a couple of years now. Joe Flacco done.
I'm done to think so. Yeah, the kind of thing
is done. Done, Like Super Bowl champion clarterback and done

(01:42:52):
so and you you like Drew Lock. Things are looking
up for Drew Lock. I think Denver and the the
pieces that they have added, they played a lot of
close games this past year. Courtland Sutton, I think it
is a great wide receiver. Yeah, so I think I
do like Denver in uh in maybe making a push
in are they other? A big deal in the NFL today?

(01:43:15):
Sean Payton of the Saints testing positive for coronavirus wasn't
feeling well, got a test on Monday, and the test
came back positive today, So he is self quarantining and
actually tweeted out a picture of him at home with
his dog looking fine. But Sean Payton the first NFL
name to come out testing positive for coronavirus. It is

(01:43:35):
interesting how big a name some of these people are
that test positive, right, Yeah, I think it really tells
you something. I think a lot of people have it
and have had it. I actually do. I actually think
that a lot of people have had it, had it
and have had it. There's people that think, like, man,
I wasn't feeling well over the winter months and it
was a flu, but they didn't come back as flu.
What what is that? You know? We just we don't know.

(01:43:57):
If you're not testing for you don't know what it is.
And for a most normal adults, it feels like the
flu um just more dangerous for older people. Well, I
can tell you it just a crazy situation that went
through my mind today. And I told the guys during
one of the breaks that remember when I me and
my wife Lisa went to Indiana, And I told you
we went out to eat and we sat at the

(01:44:17):
table next to Sean Payton and Mickey Louis, and I
just my wife hasn't been feeling well. She's kind of
had a sinus problem, and I, you know, call her, said,
how long have you been six It's like, only you know,
for a few days. Uh. The great husband I am
that I can't remember how long she's been sick, point
being she's been out all week. But I was like, oh, jeez,
did something happen when we went out to eat in
Indianapolis that you know, it just makes it kind of

(01:44:39):
think that way. But maybe that was a dumb story. Sorry,
it's not just Yeah, I was like, oh wow, could
there be an you gave coronavirus to Oh no, no,
that is not the case. Red Sox Chris Sale'm gonna
have Tommy John surgery so he'll miss the season something
I'm sure Red Sox fans I would like to this

(01:45:00):
as well, if it's ever going to be played. Question
now is because he's had such a you know, a
time dealing with his elbow and they've put it off,
what's going to be the status for one? Yeah? You
almost you almost wished like he had he'd gotten this done,
he might have been and look, here's here's that crazy thing.
The opposite side of it is, you know, show hey Otani,
who's going to pitch this year for the Angels. He

(01:45:22):
gets the added rehab of a lengtheny spring training, and
he may be back in even better than ever. Like it.
There's there's some good to it, even if it's a
bad to to Chris Sale the Big Twelve, excuse me,
the Big Three is going to hold a quarantined UH tournaments.
According to Yahoo's Sports Big Yeah, the Big Three will
have the the Three on three tournament, likely in a

(01:45:44):
closed location in l A quarantined but yeah. Ice Cubes
League gonna try to put on some sort of event
in the month of April. Huh Okay, I don't know.
Maybe you just test ten guys, make sure they're not
testing positive and put it on TV. Yeah, I guess.
I mean the world needs sports programming. I just don't know, Like,

(01:46:07):
have you ever watched The Big Three? I have, at times,
not religiously, but I have at times. NFL teams are
placing provisions and contracts that could coust players signing bonus
money if they fail physicals. That's according to ESPN, essentially Doug.
What's being said is because of the coronavirus fears, they
not be able to get the physical that they need.

(01:46:28):
But if they do fail a physical, instead of just
not having the signing, some of the signing bonus given
to the player would be taken away if they fail
that physical. That's an interesting way of adjusting to this
this crazy unforeseen time. And finally, Doug CBS instead of
the tournament that we would have been watching this weekend
announcing they will have a string of national championship contests

(01:46:51):
airing on Saturday and Sunday, and also the re airing
of the East Regional final between Duke and Kentucky. That
one's going to be on set. You will be amazed
at how much broadcast television has evolved, how much better
the uh TV cameras are, the broadcasters themselves are. That's

(01:47:11):
the press backing out there and pressed, that was the press. Yeah,
I look, this is a day which you know I've
I've worked this d ns A tournament for five years
and uh I remember I had some buddies who texted
me last night, Hey, Buffalo West Virginia. I took Buffalo
plus four and a half. Do you remember the final scores,
like actually sixty two, I remember the final score. We

(01:47:34):
don't have hoops, but we got lots of football except
Todd Gurley. He's like the rest of us do got
lip show.
