of the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Boom,
What Up America? On Doug Gollipe Show, Fox Sports Radio.
What Up? Everybody? Welcome in. Doug Gotlip Show rolls on
keeping her eye on playoff Basketball, which kind of strangely
(00:42):
underway during the day. That was a voice of my
son Hayes. He's got his entire life savings on the
Bucks to win the championship. We teach him to gamble
young and gamble big, go bigger, go home early. Here
on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. A
lot to get to you. Uh, we haven't just an
outstanding show for you with some outstanding guests. I'll give
(01:05):
you my thoughts on something I saw last night in
the NBA that there needs to be an adjustment, just
needs to be an adjustment in a moment um. Let
me share with you a couple of things coming up
here on the show as we're gonna get into continue
with our discussion about college football with the players clearly
(01:26):
wanting to play that's because they've let it be known
in the Big Ten. We also Adam Kaplan's gonna join US.
NFL insider Dusty Dvorcei is gonna join US. Former college
football All American at Oklahoma, of course, played UH for
a decade in the National Football League. He'll join us
and UH. We'll also catch up with Butch Davis, who
(01:47):
of course is a longtime head coach back now coaching
in college and get his thoughts on this season. Will
will the sec A, c C and Big twelve really
be able to pull it off? So a bunch of
things to get to. Let's let's let's start with last night.
So the Mavericks lost in their opening game of the playoffs.
(02:09):
And by now, you know, like, look, you get to
this time of day, I'm pretty reasonable, pretty well aware
that Okay, yeah, you you know that score. You probably
know a little bit of the story that led to
that score. We're keeping an eye on the Magic who
have a ten point lead over the number one seed Bucks. Yes,
it does. It does feel a little bit like deja vu,
I know to Bucks fans or Mike Budenholzer fans, a
(02:31):
guy who's had such success in the regular season, in
the regular season, but really a positive of success in
the postseason. The Nuggets beat the Jazz yesterday and the
and the big story was donov Mitchell had fifty seven
and lost. Jamal Murray was spectacular, especially in over time.
Raptors thumped the Nets. Celtics beat the Sixers. Gordon Heyward
sprained his ankle, he's out four weeks or supposedly four weeks,
(02:53):
and the Clippers came from behind, trailing at the half.
They came from behind and they end up winning by
eat against the Dallas Mavericks. Now there's a lot of
different takeaways, like look at Luca don Check who he
did have eleven turnovers, but he did have forty two points,
nine assists, seven rebounds, eleven turnovers the Yikes, but he
(03:14):
handles the ball so much, does everything for that team,
You understand it. Kauai looked closer to old Kauai. Leonard
twenty nine, Paul George, They get some bench steps and
bench scoring. Sweet Lou Williams has four team and they win.
But the the story to me of the game was
the ejection of christophs Prozingis. Now Perzingis, who only played
twenty minutes because the ejection and because you know, look,
(03:36):
he's he was a dynamic prospect when he was with
the Knicks. Now he's a really good secondary weapon, Lucas
the guy. Perzingis can shoot threes. He's seven for three. Uh.
One would think he could block shots a little better
than he does. But coming off of missing an entire
(03:58):
season with the knee injury, forcing a trade to Dallas,
I would say he's been a little bit disappointing, a
little bit up and down. But the bigger story was
he was ejected for two technical fouls last night. And
I've heard from a lot of people, well, he's got
to know better, he's got to know better. Well, okay,
(04:18):
but so do the officials. Like look, in the NBA,
it all generally has worked. Do you want the right
calls to be made at the right time, Sure, but
you do sort of want a little bit of star treatment.
And that doesn't mean he's a superstar. But when you
know when Marcus Morris, you know, grabs Luca don Chick
(04:42):
and kind of throws him around, rag dolls him a
little bit, and they get into it and guys start
pushing and shoving. That's not the time when a guy
who's on the floor should be called for a technical foul. Look,
we all have to adjust that. Everything we learned in
the regular season kind of goes out the window for
the postseason. Mason point the Raptors crushing the nets. The
(05:02):
Raptors are much better than the nets in the regular season.
You play more guys, there's not the same level of defense,
the officiating, everything is a little different. And what's real
is really what happened yesterday. But the same has to
go for the officials. I'm not saying you don't officiate.
I'm not saying you don't call fouls. I'm not saying
(05:23):
you change anything about who you are or what you're
trying to do. What I am saying, and this is
really important, is we're really going to kick a guy
out over a little shove. What are we doing here?
He wasn't an instigator, he wasn't a reactor. He was
simply protecting his teammates. And it comes to a little
push and shove and what what this is basketball? It's
(05:48):
like and there's a there's a definite line there, and
we'll talk about unwritten rules and things for nano tattoos. Jr.
Hitting a grand slam, bases loaded three oh count and
HiT's HiT's a grand slam, and you know, the Rangers
are up in arms, and the question becomes the unwritten
rule there versus unwritten rule in basketball, and the unwritten
(06:11):
ruling basketball as you come and you have your teammates
back and as long as you don't throw a punch,
for the most part, you're fine. The unwritten rule basketball
is if it whatever the easiest off ramp to not
punish the best players. That's what we do because we
came to see them play. And the idea is, you know,
(06:32):
unless they're just dying and begging for a technical, yelling
at you that you're an mfer in your face, or
swinging and punching a guy everything else, you kind of
look a little bit the other way. That's that's just
the way it works. You kind of look a little
bit the other way. And last night those officials were
unwilling to do so, and frankly, it did not give
(06:54):
us a great sense, a great sense, for you know,
how much better are the Slippers than the Mavericks. Think
about that. That's a series changing decision by an official
that there is in no world is that worthy of
an injection? And I know what you're saying, Well, it's
a set in technical foul. Like your official. You have
(07:15):
to know how many technical fouls? How have you already
had one? It's Prosinga's it's it's a physical game. It's
the Clippers who are clearly antagonizers, even though they're the favorites.
You almost gotta bite your lip. So, yeah, Prozingas, I
guess he's got to know better although he's never been
in the plasts before. And yeah, his teammates, I guess
(07:38):
gotta grab him instead of him protecting his teammates. And
all of that stuff sounds great. He didn't throw a punch.
It's a little soft pushing, a little little fake tough
guy stuff. They didn't even square off at all. So
so I ask you, what's really going on and what
are we doing the purpose of these rules? The purpose
(07:59):
of this can technical foul and you get ejected. The
purpose of those things, quite frankly, is to keep the peace, which,
by the way, was what Prozingis was trying to do
yesterday when he felt like Luca don Chick, who was
dominating the game, was getting was trying to get ragged
all by Marcus Morris. And that's what the Clippers do.
(08:20):
And the Clippers win two times over, they win the game.
Then they won because the ejection, and now you end
up kind of declining Perzingis to where he can never
react to anything that Marcus Morris or Patrick Beverley do,
even though we all know it gets under people's skin.
All right. Coming up next, Um, well, we got interesting
(08:41):
stuff to get to. That's interesting. I like that story.
Who liked the story a lot? Um. Dusty Devoichi is
gonna join us in uh ten minutes. We'll get his
thoughts on Oklahoma, their new positive tests, and whether or
not he thinks the Big twelve does in fact play football. Um,
(09:03):
but coming up next, Lebron James said this could be
his tough this will be his toughest title run. What
Lebron's really saying. Be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio app Doug Gotlieb Show here on Fox Sports Radio.
(09:26):
It is actually I have a question for all you guys, Adam,
let me let me, let me ask you a question here. Okay.
So I have some really close friends that are re orders, right, Okay,
When you list a house, Okay, when you list a house,
you're supposed to list you know, like if somebody died
in the house, you gotta like you know that, if
an old lady dies in the house, you have to
(09:46):
write that down, right. Okay. So I have some friends
that are selling a house and the guy oft himself
but not technically in the house. He did the car
in the garage thing. You have to list that right. Well,
it's you know, I've bought and saw at homes before.
(10:08):
I have not heard that before you that rule because
it's never would come up. I don't know what the
legality is for that, but you should make buy or beware. Obviously,
would you would you buy a home if that happened
in the home? Okay? My response to that would be
I would want to know exactly where this death occurred
and how it happened, and then I would have to
(10:29):
make a decision, and I would look also, because you're
bringing this up, we're looking at the amity of all
horror here. What are we talking about? I want to
go back in history. Were there any other incidents at
this house? No, in this particular case, it was in
the car, in the garage. That's a tough one. That's
that's that's a tough one. That would be a discussion
(10:49):
with a wife. I could tell you that because I'm
Ramos Ramos. Would that be a definite note for you?
I wouldn't be exciting. I can tell you that. No.
But like let's say, like you see something like I
love that, this is everything I wanted. Yeah, I don't.
I don't think that would that would definitely be a negative. Well,
I know it would be a negative. Would be a
negative to the point where you would not purchase the house.
(11:09):
That's the question probably for me personally, buyer, what about you? Yeah,
that would be tough. I think of those I think
of those home selling shows when they're like I love
the walking closets, all, this bathroom is great garage, you know,
like you don't you don't hear that one too much
on those shows? Um, yeah, that would be would be
(11:32):
that's a little different. Yeah. Yeah. By the way, I
asked this question to Addam the last time he was
on my show on Sunday on Fox. I'll be back
this Sunday. All right, Okay, good guys can continue this
kind of what you got. Yeah, you know what I do.
I actually ask Adam questions that pertain to my fantasy
football team. They think that they think that their general
(11:52):
NFL questions, but they're more intel for me. And it's
so funny when I talked to coaches and executives. I'd
never obviously asked for fantasy stuff, but I would if
if you're if you graded all my questions, I would
say sixty forty their own offense. I want to ask questions.
I don't know why it's just that way, but it
is true. Um, how much let's let's talk about offense injuries. Okay,
(12:13):
So the Niners lose another wide receiver to another injury.
How much does this affect them? It's bad because Jalen
heard you're talking about a tours a c L boy.
They were counting on him to be sort of a receiver.
Might a line up in the backfield, Deebo Sammy won't
be ready until sometime September. He's not expected to be
ready from week one coming back from his broken foot.
Richie James who got hurt. He's a backup receiver and
(12:36):
a special teams returner. They don't have a timeline on him.
He got hurt when he was away from the football team.
That's why he's on the non football injury list. So
right now they're down to four experience receivers. Brandon Ayuka
is not experienced, but he's a rookie and they expect
him to start. Kendrick Born they do like they have
Dante Pettis, and they have Trent Taylor who didn't play
last season coming back from his broken foot. They really
(12:59):
like him. He's their sl receiver. So it does hurt,
There's no question about it. This impacts there their death
at the wide receiver position, and it is not a
deep position. In free agency, that's why they brought in
Tavon Austin and j J. Nelson, who, by the way,
j J. Nelson didn't even play last season. Um, okay,
same question, Jerald McCoy, who I think you know like look,
(13:20):
I like t MZ. I think they do when they
get a story, they and they think how many stories
they have broken. However, they get those stories. They've done
a great job, but they do this thing where a
guy goes down with injury and it's NFL star, Like
Jim McCoy is not an NFL star. How important was
he to what the Cowboys wanted to defensively? Yeah, now
he is thirty two, but he was going to start
(13:41):
as their three technique defensive tackle Don Terry Poe. There
are other defensive tackle who's also older. He has not practicing,
he's only physically unable to perform list. So this is
this is impactful because their two projected starters are both
dealing with injuries. Don Terry po now is thirty years old,
the former first round pick of the Chiefs from from
years ago. What they're gonna do is I understand at
(14:03):
Tristan Hill is a second round pick last year. Now,
he's very gifted, but he had some maturity issues talking
to people in scouting around the National Football League. He's
the guy that went to Central Florida. He's a guy
that needs a little bit of work. It's going to
be impactful because they're now they're not very deep, and
they also can move in Nickel situations they can move
um Tyrone Crawford in inside that that that's almost certain
(14:25):
to happen at defensive tackle, but it just hurts their rotation.
There's no question about him. We're we're seeing more players
go down already Burns the Bears, who was competing for
starting outside corner job. He suffered a severe knee injury,
potentially commits the season. So yeah, this is your typical
training camp stuff. But remember, Doug, we have three weeks
of training camp left. Two of them are real training camp.
(14:47):
The third weeks when teams turned a week one, what
you do is the the fourth preseason week. If you
had games, that's the week where you don't game plan
at all and you're just that's when you start turning
the page to we one. So a lot of jobs
are starting to be on the line. We have real
competition this week. Okay, what's to me to you, what's
the most what's the one that, um you hear job competition?
(15:10):
I mean, is it is it the Patriots my quarterback job?
What's what's the job that most intrigues you? That one?
Cam Newton Kenny win the job by week one because
he doesn't have a lot of time he's learning a
new offense. Mitch Trobinsky versus Nick Foles the quarterback job
in training camp for the Chicago Bears. And remember now, Doug,
Mitch Trobinsky did not have a fifth year option picked up.
He is now on the final years rookie deal. Second
(15:32):
pick overall, one of the most surprising picks in my
twenty one years years of covering the national football gage.
I was at the draft in Philly and certainly was
not expecting Mitch Trobinsky to go this high. I did
expect him to go in the top ten, but was
not expecting to go second overall. So those would be
probably when you look at quarterback. And then now here's
another one. Alex Smith. He was acted, he was activated
(15:53):
off of PUP. Now he is actually competing now. I
don't think it's gonna be enough time for him to
start Week one, but they're not rolling anything out right now.
So that one you have to put the Washington football
team's quarterback situation right on the front burner. No, that
one's really interesting because while he might not be very mobile,
considering he and he used to be a very athletic quarterback.
(16:14):
Dwayne Haskins without injury isn't mobile at all either, So
and then you know, I mean he just I mean
it's not just an impressive story of toughness, but he's
a proven quarterback who's proven he can take two different
franchises to the playoffs. Uh you know, I I think
that has a chance to be a And he's making
a ton of money and and he's clearly not doing
(16:34):
it for the money because he could have taken a
retirement uh you know, uh settlement and just kind of
walked away. So there's a lot to the Alex Smith thing,
which we've all just kind of championed the fact that
he's back and how amazing it is, But there's other
parts to it which make it even more fascinating, like
could he actually end up starting for the Washington football
team right now that now that he's able to practice,
(16:55):
that they have to get a idea of what he
can do and what he can't do or what if
there any limitations, And that will absolutely, that absolutely is
going to play into it. There's no question about it. Uh,
how much he can do from a day to day basis,
And as you said, you make a great point, how
athletic is he? I look forward to seeing that Adam
(17:15):
Gaplan joined his series Sex m NFL. NFL insider Jadeveon
Clowney Um Seattle had some money and they've end up
spending it elsewhere. What's the status is of his market?
I've said all along that it's going to be the
Sea he was with Seattle last season. I think it's
Tennessee or or or probably nobody. I think when you look,
(17:37):
you at it, to be honest with you, I mean,
Clowney turned down a lot of money at the start
of free agency. I think what happened was there is
that he kind of oversold himself. Remember he's coming back
from muscle core surgery. Okay, that's what is the a
k a a sports hernia. He was not himself last season.
The tape showed it. This is what personnel people tell me.
(18:00):
Uh the Titans have not backed off. They want him,
there's no question, but they're not willing to meet his
asking price. The word around the league is Doug and
I heard your segment before I came on. The word
is clearly that he's not willing to lower his asking
price is something that's reasonable now if he could get
down a ten to twelve million for this season. You're
gonna see at least a half a dozen teams that
are sort of hovering or over but not making any
(18:21):
offers get involved. But if he wants eighteen, if he
wants seventeen eighteen million a season, which is the belief
or in the national football that he wants, he's gonna
have tot you to wait. Now what he can wait,
as you and I talked about these injuries, he could
just wait and see if anybody gets hurt. That's what
That's how players great leverage to the rations. And he's
(18:41):
got the great bus cook and so far, I know
the Browns wanted him back, and then once he said no,
they wanted to sign him at the start of free agency.
Once he said no, they moved on. And you saw
that they had the the they did a big time extension. Uh,
and they've kind of moved on. So there are not
a lot of suitors. Now, I will agree with you
on that. But if you just lower his asking price,
(19:03):
he could be going somewhere very very soon. Yeah, it
could be, but we just have not seen that desire
to do so, which can ten one him though they
want him. Yeah, and and Cleveland apparently we wanted him
or who knows they backed off? Yeah, you know what
happened is they extended Miles Garrett. Ironically, Miles Garrett has
the same agent as the Affron mentioned Jenevian Climbing, which
(19:24):
is kind of amazing to me. Who's the team we
should be paying more attention to this year? All right?
So every year I come up with these teams. Last
year my team's were the Titans and the Niners. I
missed the year when the Rams shocked everybody with in
Tean mcvay's first year, I would say a couple of
teams you need to be talking about or keep an
eye on. One's obvious with Tom Brady the buccaneer John
(19:46):
Figure's any question about that. He gives them credibility. I
think that they look their defense really closed. Well. Now
they won't be turning the ball over like crazy with
Jameis Winson as their quarterback. The team that I think
could kind of surprise people because they were not very
good last season, but I think they've had a terrific offseason.
I'm not saying they're gonna make the playoffs, but the
(20:06):
first thing that comes to mind of the Denver Broncos.
Their offense is being rebuilt. They're absolutely loaded at skill positions.
Melvin Gordon, kJ hamlet wide receiver in the draft, and
Drew Lock. I'm very high on uh Vic Fangio's their
defend their their their head coach, but he's with a
defensive background. Second year in that defense, I think they're
gonna get it. I think they're gonna improve. I think
(20:27):
that's a team that's gonna push for a wild card spot.
Last year I picked the Titans to win a wild card.
Obviously one division and then one more team that I that.
I'm not saying they're going to make the playoffs, but
I do expect that Chicago Bears, who obviously fell off
last season big time. You know. Talking to the Bears,
they're very happy with the new coaching staff, particularly the
offensive coaching room. John d. Filippo's their quarterback coach, was
(20:50):
one of the best developers of the quarterback position. Matt
Naggie and Bill Laser. I think they're gonna do a
great job. And whoever their quarterback is my money. By
the way, I'm taking the underdog there, taking trebisk I
think they're gonna I think they're gonna get much better
quarterback play with whoever wins that job. Yeah, I'm with
you on I do think that Robinsky gets to start
to start the season. I do think they should be
(21:11):
better better. I'm I'm, I'm I'm fascinated by uh By
all by all of that. Um, let me ask you
about Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tom Brady is like, Hey, finally
get a chance to play for an offensive coach. But
do their offensive philosophies actually blend together. Well, what they're
gonna do is it's interesting with Gronk in there and
they're so loaded tight end, They're gonna go what's called
(21:32):
twelve personnel, which means their main formation is going to
be one back, two tight ends of two receivers. Godwin
and Mike Evans are your receivers. Gronk and O g
Howard or or Gronk and Cameron Brad will be the
tight ends. It's it's gonna be more of a conventional
old school offense. They're gonna have a committee at running
back and this will play well. Now, the question is
how much is Groncalff left from not playing last season.
(21:53):
He's thirty one years old. We know about the injury history.
But Gronk and Brady have tremendous chemistry. I'm really looking
forward to see how the two guys play together. But
it's gonna be more of a scale out offense. See
what happened last year is Jamis Winson put a huge numbers,
but because he would keep turning it over and then
team would have to come back and throw the ball
like crazy. You're not gonna see thet you know. He
asked about what kind of offense is it gonna suit Brady.
(22:16):
He's not gonna be throwing the ball forty times a game,
somewhere low low thirty attempts per game, probably no more
than thirty five a game as long as they're ahead.
I don't see a past happy offense here. But it's
gonna be very tight and friendly. You could expect that, Yeah,
I would. I tend to believe that as well. Um,
we we talked a little bit about the Redskins and
Fires quarterback. What do they do without Darius Guys? Now
(22:39):
at running back, it's gonna be Adrian Peterson, who was
always gonna be Adrian Peterson. But I'm going to give
you a name to watch out for. Now's Antonio Gibson,
their third round pick, who was a hybrid running back
wide receiver. Talking to a Memphis coaching source, he went
to Memphis. The kid has built like he's he sort
of looks it looks like a bodybuilder. He's about two
(22:59):
h twenty pounds, but you run a four three at
forty at the combine. And he's a very intriguing player.
But the one issue was asking him to be a
hybrid player through this abbreviated training camp and no off
season on the field and no preseason. But if you're
a Washington fan, you watch him and Bryce Love out
of Stanford was coming back from a c O reconstruction.
(23:20):
They're gonna back up Peterson, and Peterson is no question
about it. He is the guy at running back for
the Washington team. By the way, he is thirty five
years old. Yeah, well, I mean like, look, you need
some money. He's had some obviously some financial difficulties, but
he is guy's a workhorse, and he's kind of old
school Hamid the football and he'll get you three yards
(23:40):
sort of running back. Are you buying what Cleveland selling?
You know? Last year I spent two days with them.
They were visiting the Colts. I was at a combined
practice and the hype machine was ridiculous. Most type team
I had seen in years, which just and obviously didn't
lead up to it. Didn't land anything. They were disappointing
once again. But I like that they're having a quiet hamps.
Kevin Stefanski is going to run another twelve personnel offense. There.
(24:05):
You're going to see Nick Chubb and and Cream Hunt
dominate Carrie. So they're not gonna throw the ball to
on talking to the Browns, They're gonna scout down the
offense for Baker Mayfield. They're gonna try to help him.
There was too pass happy last season. And I just
think that they're a team that's gonna be eight and eight,
nine and seven. Their defense should be fantastic. Offensively, though, um,
(24:25):
they need some help at wide receiver. They have no depth.
Their offensive line needs a little bit of help. But
I'll tell you what. I like that there's not a
lot of hype with his football team and having a
quiet camp and have a team that doesn't have any hype.
Maybe they can suppress some people that this season. Yeah,
I tend to I tend to agree. Dees Bryant going
to work out for the Ravens. I didn't like Antonio
(24:46):
Brown to the Ravens. Only he wants he needs a
volume of balls throwing his way. You're not gonna get it.
Does just be kind of happy to be in the league.
Do you think he makes it back to the league. Yeah,
that's a good read on him. Now here's the read
for personal people. He didn't run very well. He he he
had I mean when at the time the Cowboys parted ways,
he didn't look like he had much. But what he
can do is as a fourth NFL receiver, he's a
(25:10):
possession receiver. He just doesn't run very well. He's he's
six ft two, he's guys put up a lot of numbers.
He'll have a chance to sign with a team that
is looking for depth. But you have to know what
he is and he's not. He's just he's a slower receiver.
The knock with NFL people when they would watch his tape,
he sort of freelances a little bit. But you make
a good point. He's desperate to play football. He's in
(25:31):
his thirties now. As a fourth receiver, you could do well.
And by the way, Baltimore, when you speak of Baltimore.
Who's gonna work him out there? They don't have very
many veterans there in terms of backups. They're very young
Marquis Hollywood Brown and Miles Boykin, Devin Duvernain and James
Prochet in the draft. They just need a veteran and
he would be a fourth receiver if he'd wind up
signing for them. Yeah, I think the question would be,
(25:54):
like you said, the freelancing. If you're a go to
guy and you're just kind of getting open, but that's
not seemingly how Martin. You need to be able to block,
you know, and you need to be able to have
a defined role in and be where he expects you
to be. I don't think you get to a point
you're like Junior say, I was the great freelancer until
he came to the Patriots. Then he didn't freelance. So
it'll be fascinated. See Out of Cap and check him
(26:16):
out serious x M NFL Radio. Of course, you can
also listen to him on Dan Buyer's show where they
talk about whether or not they would purchase a home
when somebody was often that in that home or off
themselves at home. Adam, great stuff. Thanks for joining us.

Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific.
Butch Davis joins his son the Doug Gottlip Show, head
(26:37):
coach of Florida International. UH down in uh down down
in Miami. UH coach, how are you? I'm doing good? God?
How how about yourself? But we're We're good. I'm okay.
So what is what is your team's current status? Well? Currently,
right now, we're still on schedule to try to play
(26:58):
the two thousand season, and Conference USA, We've had one
member Old Dominion has has pulled out that they are
not going to play. UM, there's potentially maybe one more
that might not. But UH Marton Hanks is our conference
commissioner for the football UH part of the Conference USA,
(27:19):
and he and the presidents and the athletic directors. UH,
you know, we're still trying to juggle around and try
to figure out, you know, the games that we have lost,
Like we we were scheduled to play U Mass and
they're not gonna play this year. UH, Jacksonville State is
not going to play. Who's going to be our openers?
So you know, I think everybody in our conference is
waiting to see you know, how are we gonna fill
(27:40):
in potentially for those games? Are we're gonna start to
play some of the teams that were on the schedule
in the West Western Division, like the University of Alaba
Birmingham nor Texas, University of Texas, uh, San Antonio. But
we're still waiting for that. But we've been back practicing
for the first time obviously since December, since the bowl game,
(28:00):
and so uh, you know, we're trying to prepare as
if we're gonna play, you know, eleven games. How hard
is that considering one you don't know about, like your
first game is canceled right as an hour trying to
find new opponent, and then two you didn't have spring ball,
you know, and you really didn't have you didn't really
(28:22):
have a summer either. What what's this like for for
your to you try and do your job? Yeah, you
know what, Doug, it's been it's been a real challenge
for our coaches have done a phenomenal job and I'm
kind of proud of our kids. Are older veteran guys
that have been in the program now for three years
of kind of taking the young freshmen that have come
into the program under their wings and and really trying
(28:42):
to help them study how to you know, the culture,
how you work out, run left, how you uh practice.
You know, that part's been good since we've come back.
We came back at June and so we had a
chance to have you about six weeks of just nothing
but conditioning, but uh, for the previous three months before
that and since then, like everybody else in the country, Doug,
(29:04):
we're doing all the zoom meetings and you can only
do so much of that. I mean, obviously it's you know,
from ante uh from an intelligence standpoint, in learning systems
you can do. But to play the game, and I
don't care what the game is, whether it's golf, basketball, football,
you gotta go play. You gotta get out and do it,
and you gotta get it on film. You gotta see it,
correct it, fix it, and uh you know, and so
(29:26):
you know, we've been back now for three days as
far as you know, being out there and actually practicing,
so um, you know, it's it's a challenge, you know,
I mean, because especially when you don't know exactly Okay,
who's the opponent who we're going to play the first
game of the season. Uh, that makes it a little
bit more challenging than a normal regular seat, no, no
question about. Butch Davis, head coach Florida National, Join us
(29:47):
got live show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, okay,
So what has it been like to to establish your
own protocols like well, obviously Florida National, you know, you
guys operate different git then University of Miami obviously or
Carolina or whatever. What's it? What is it like to
try and establish here? What's that? What's the best way,
(30:08):
the smartest way, but the safest way so that we
can have to get this thing done. Yeah, you know what, Doug,
the administration here really did a great thing for us
this summer that uh, for the first time, you know,
we tried to create a bubble. Everybody talks about the
bubble of the NBA's bubble in Orlando and everybody h
we actually got a dormitory across from our stadium and
(30:29):
from a football facility, and and for the first time
they ever, the n c double A never allowed it
after they got rid of sports dorms, and they're letting
our football program be on in one, uh dormitory, which
kind of that way they have their own elevator, they
have their own rooms. Uh, and that way they don't
have to interact with the other students on campus. And
(30:52):
and then they can come across the street, come to
the stadium. We feed, We have all of our meals
here in the stadium on the meeting and uh, you know,
practice fields and stuff. So we tried to create that
kind of a bubble concept and and it's been you know,
for the most part, it's been pretty much successful over
the last month and a half. When we had players,
(31:13):
uh that first came back in June, obviously they had
been home for about four months. And uh, that was
probably the biggest significant amount of positive tests with the
players when they first came back from their homes. Since
that time, UM, two weeks ago we had a test.
We tested sixty four players. We had zero positive test. Uh.
(31:35):
A week ago we I think we tested sixty eight
and we actually had for the first time, we had
one positive test. So, you know, I think being in
this bubble, as you hear other coaches say, you know
the best you can do, and I know there are
players at times they go acrost the grocery store because
they've got um, you know, a kitchen in their apartments
and stuff. So they have to be exposed. But they've
(31:57):
done a great job, I think, um, you know, wearing
the mask, the sanitation, washing their hands, social distancing, and
but you never know. I mean the reality of it
is is that tomorrow is gonna be our first day
where we have full speed kind of tackling and you're
gonna be around players, which is like the game. And
then you never know, Doug, Like, when you start to
(32:18):
play these actual games, you know, no one's got an
answer for You get a call the next Tuesday and
they say, guess what are running back our defensive tackle
or safety? Uh tested positive. And now you've got to
go back at the film and say, Okay, how many
of our guys tackled that kid? You know they potentially
is that going to be part of the tracing and
(32:39):
could you lose six or seven kids for the next
two or three games? So, uh, no one has really
explained the answer to that. But uh, you know, we're
just moving forward and waiting for somebody to tell us
exactly how they're gonna do it. Okay, so what what
do you tell your players they are allowed to do
and what are not allowed to do uh uh, Well, obviously,
(33:01):
you know, we we really talked to them about stay
away from strangers. And this has been going on now
for four or five months. I mean, you know, minimize
who you're around. Stay around your family when they were home,
when they came back here. Stay around your teammates because
you know that they're being tested, uh every week. We've
been testing now, you know, for a pretty significant amount
(33:21):
of time, and you know that if you're around these
guys and the coaches and the staff and the rest
of the department, if you're around them, you're probably in
the most healthiest environment that you could potentially be at. Obviously,
in Miami, it's unlike a lot of other places around
the country. Everything is pretty much kind of shut down
(33:41):
that restaurants bars, any of those kinds of things. It's
all you know by uber, but have somebody bring it
to you or pull up its curve and somebody brings
it outside. So that part of it probably has helped,
you know, we study and we use other other schools
around the country. We've looked at other schools where they've
had huge organic uh students come back on campus and
(34:03):
sorority and fraternity's and next thing you know, they've got
thirty five guys test positive, so you know, we're trying
to share that with the players, and you know, and
ask them to be smart, be intelligent that if you
really truly want to play this season and you want
to have a good, successful season, they have a chance
to win and go to a bowl game. We've got
to do all these right things because we can shoot
(34:24):
ourselves in the foot and uh and and totally destroy
any opportunity to have a good season or maybe even
get shut down. Um, all right, you got to replace
an outstanding quarterback, right and you know you've you've been
able to do all this conditioning and you know, James
Morgan's gone, and so there's you know, there's three via
Anyet Kalin. You've got Caleb and Stone Norton, who's a
(34:45):
redshirt freshman, and only Calin's actually played. How important are
padded practices for you and deciding who's gonna be your quarterback? Yeah? Yeah, huge, Doug.
From that standpoint one thing, Caleb blind him, Uh, we
move Tim. He came in and asked, and we moved
him to a wide receiver. Maurice Alexander two years ago
did the same thing when James Morgan came and was
(35:08):
a great athlete, and we'll find a way for him
to help us win games. We do have Stone Stone Norton,
who was a great high school player who was fifteen
and oh and was the m v P in the
state of Tennessee who now is a and he's been
here in the system for one year. Uh. Kalen Wiggins
who did come in and play. I won one of
the games last year after when James Morgan got injured
(35:31):
and got hurt. Uh. You know, so he is here.
Hayden Carlson who is an incoming freshman. His dad played
for the Denver Broncos and one of these days he's
going to have a really good future. But we have
one additional quarterback. We did get a transfer from the
University of Maryland and it's uh uh it's Max borden
(35:52):
Schlager and uh he started for Maryland as a sophomore
two years ago. So between him and the other two quarterbacks,
there's a lot of competitions. I'll be honest with you, Doug,
it's it's it's a challenge because you'd love to have
solved a lot of this. Maybe back in spring practice
narrative down from four to two. But now with you know,
(36:12):
twenty five days, twenty six days, maybe potentially before the
first game. Uh, you know, we're trying to divide the
reps up and see how these two, how these three
guys do and and um, you know, how their impact,
their leadership in the huddle, the performance. But I do
think that we'll We've got some really talented kids, and
I think that we're going to have a really good offense.
(36:36):
There's there's no doubt your team average. I think twenty
ninety game last year, you're gonna put up some points.
And the question is how do you get kind of
to to to two point point a? Um? What about
for you personally? Right like, you're in good health, but
you're not you're but you're in that target demo of
having to be safe. Is there ever, is there ever
a moment where you're like, I don't know if this
is a good idea for me. You know, obviously it's
(37:01):
something that you think about, But you know, I'm doing
absolutely everything that we're asking the players to do. Is
you know, for the previous three or four months, you know,
I stayed with my wife and and uh we pretty
much stayed quarantine and stayed away from everything other than
maybe going to the grocery store and stuff. And and
then even now that we're back here, you know, wearing
(37:21):
masks and all of our staff meetings spreading out. I mean,
we used to have a staff room where we would
pack in six people. Now we're having staff meetings in
the in the team meeting room that holds a hundred
and twenty and so we just spread out, and and
same thing on on the practice field. You know, there's
things that I'd love to be doing. I mean, I'm
a kind of a physical coach. I love hugging, I
(37:43):
love high five and I love being around the kids,
you know, and I'll get close to them and and
you know, encourage them or maybe make corrections during practice
and stuff. But you're just not as physical maybe as
you used to be. Yeah, it's it's just a very
very differentable coach. We can't wait to see your panthers
out on the foot ball field very very soon. In
the meantime, get him going. Can't wait to hear what
(38:04):
your reports are after the first day of hitting each other,
and uh, stay healthy. We appreciate you join us well.
I was hoping we were going to talk about Eskimo
Joe's are Highway Pizza. We can if you'd like, we
can do a little stuff conversation. When you were your
your best staff you were part of there was who
for people who don't know what that Oaklahoma State, who's
the best staff of your part of Oh? Absolutely? I
(38:26):
mean with Jimmy Johnson, I was blessed and fortunate to
be uh, you know, a coach with him for fifteen years,
and not only at Miami and Oklahoma State and the
Dallas Cowboys, and I mean obviously it was just a
superstar group of guys. Uh Dave one st that was
a part of that staff, and Tony Wise, who's probably
one of the best offensive line coaches, deyver coach in
the National Football League, and you know, and all of
(38:49):
us were fortunate. And then as North Turner and a
lot of other guys joined Jimmy Staff, I was blessed
to be around a lot of really really talented and
excellent coaches and good men when you were in doubt,
when you were in Dallas during the golden era of
the Dallas Cowboys. With with Jimmy Johnson, um, who's the
who's the guy who is because it's really hard to
(39:11):
because like, look, you look at Troy's numbers and it's
really hard to tell how good he was because when
it was a different era too, you had the best
running back in football, right, And so trying to relay
to the layman fan today, like, hey, Troy Igman was deadly,
crazy accurate, and yet he had all he had a
Hall of Fame caliber wide receivers and tight end and
running back. Who is the guy on that offense? And
(39:33):
I know you're upon the defensive staff when you're there,
but it was the guy in that offense that should
be getting more respect, but he gets overshadowed by the
Michael Orvan's and the Emmett Smiths of the world. Yeah,
you know what I mean. Obviously, Troy Troy truly was
the trigger of that whole thing. Michael was a great player.
I was with him at the University of Miami. Uh,
(39:54):
Jay Nova Chick when he came. I mean, I think
that Jay really was an unbelievable player. It is kind
of underappreciated because of him and everything else, because you know,
he dominated the middle part of the offense and uh,
because of his talent and his ability. It gave Michael
and a lot of the wide receivers opportunities to get
(40:14):
single coverages as opposed to if they could just roll
up and double cover those two guys and you didn't
have a tight end. Uh, it would have minimized maybe
some of their impact in some of the games. But uh,
I mean clearly, I mean Troy Aigman was was remarkable.
I mean his leadership on the field. You'd go weeks
and you'd watch him in practice and he'd never thrown
in completion, and uh, you know, I I you know,
(40:37):
I was fortunate enough to be at Miami when we
had been ea test of Barnie and and Bernie Coozar
and a lot of other really good talented quarterbacks. And
the one thing about Troy when he stepped in that hole,
the other ten guys looked in the eye and they
knew know, whatever the play was, Troy was gonna make
it a good play. He'd get him in and out
of things inaudible and change the plays and change protections,
(40:58):
and uh, you know, like anybody else, I don't care
whether you're talking about Pop Warner or in the NFL,
if you don't have a quarterback, you have no chance
of being a champion. When when you were at Miami
as the head coach, and obviously it culminated your last
game there. Uh, you know you had one of the
all time kind of great college football teams. When now
(41:19):
he's as a head coach like Ed Reid in high school,
did you see him evaluate him or was he recruited
and you just saw him when he when he got
to campus? Now, you know, I mean Ed, I would
be honest with you that Ed Reid is kind of
somewhat the model of what I've tried to recruit my
entire coaching careers and assistant coach. I love kids that
(41:40):
were multi athletes, that played a lot of different sports.
And obviously you know Ed could play quarterback, he'd played
defensive back. And again, the first time I ever saw
him this season was over with after I'd watched film
and went to a basketball practice and and and he
was a point guard and making passes between his legs
and and uh and then a lot of people don't
(42:02):
realize this, but even in college at the University of Miami,
he was a conference champion in the javelin throw. I mean,
he ran track, he did everything, and so you know,
I've always loved having athletes and were multi sports, and uh,
you know, and and and that is clearly you know,
one of those you can talk about you know, ray Lewis,
and then you know how talented he was. He was
(42:24):
a kickoff return guy in high school and and you
know he was a state champion wrestler, and and I
just you know, I've always I've always felt like that, Uh,
the players that you recruit and put on your team,
if they're if they're multi athletes, they probably really love competition.
They love to compete, and you can evaluate and see
all of their athletic ability when they play other sports,
(42:44):
whether it's baseball, basketball, uh, running track and then obviously football.
It's it just helps you really truly try to identify
who the really talented players were. You know, Edgin James
when he came to When Edge and James came to Miami,
almost screwed his entire We're up because he had such
great hands. Almost put him a wide receiver. And thank
(43:05):
god I was not stupid enough to do that. That
he went on to become a phenomenal running back. But
you know, I mean that's the kind of kids that
you'd like to give. Yeah, no question, I love the
multi sport athletes, which which it's getting harder. I have
eleven year old who he plays three and he's he's
trying to give up baseball. Like now you're you're you're
your left handed you're play baseball. But it's also just
(43:28):
it's also just competing using different muscles, different styles of practice,
you know, different piece of games, like giving them some
patience and there's a lot of great things that come
from it. And there's no doubt about it. I mean
almost every sport teaches you a little bit of something,
whether it's the athletics ism aspect of it or the
mental aspect of it. And uh, I agree with you completely.
Butch I I, uh, I hope you're well. Thanks so
(43:50):
much for joining us. No, it's a pleasure, have a
great week, and thank you very much for the opportunity
to be with you. Butch Davis joining us in the
Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sport Radio. Um, all right,
that was great, by the way. It just you know,
it's like one of those things when a guy comes
on and you know he's a coach of Florida National,
like I want to give him, but He knows that
(44:11):
I don't want to talk about Florida National Right like
that's that's a real thing.
