are you're listening to Fox Sports Radio. What if Doug
(00:27):
got Leave Show Fox Sports Radio? Mm hmmmmmmmmmm um. All right,
So there's a lot to get to good amount a
matter of fact, and uh, I want to dive in
(00:48):
on the story that I've I've heard and sometimes it
gets repeated in weird fashion. Right about Bill Belichick. I
know that Belichick has got this weird relationship with even
with the media where you know, I don't know why
quotes are being loquacious with some people matter, but sometimes
(01:09):
it does. I do understand that there are some people
who feel like, you know, the Patriots have um, Patriots
have been deceitful and spying on people and whatever and
inflating deflating a football generally is a marvelous coach. Marvelous coach. Um.
(01:31):
He was asked a question and sometimes it's the question
that you're asked. He was asked a question yesterday morning
before practice if it might benefit to have two signal
callers with varied skill set. Belichick said, it might. I've
always said what I think. Well, I'll do what's best
for the team, what gives us the best chance to win,
whatever it is, I would definitely consider it. Run on
(01:52):
balanced line, double on balanced line, personnel, whatever it is,
if it helps us win, I would consider that. What
happens with people is they get really caught up on
and and this happens in Major League Baseball with shortstops.
You know, shortstops don't want to move positions. Alex Rodriguez
(02:14):
should have been the shortstop when he got the Yankees
with Derek Cheeter. But Derrick Cheeter is the shortstop in
the captain for the New York Yankees, so he moving anywhere.
You know, there's a pride thing when guys, you know
guys when if they can't move, then they should, but
they still the arm, they should go to third. If
they can really move, but they don't have the arm,
they should go to second. Either are easier positions to play,
(02:34):
and with age you'll be okay, Um, what's interesting to
me is that if you're Cam Newton, I would almost
welcome that. I just would. I would. I would welcome
the idea of platooning at first and and here, and
really the reason is Carson Palmer. You know, that's that's
(03:00):
my my logic is Carson Palmer, because Carson Palmer. Do
you guys remember the year that he um The year
that he first went to the Raiders, it was two
thousand eleven, and for the first six games, I think
it was the first five games, but for the first
six games he was technically owned by his rights were
(03:24):
owned by the Bengals, but he refused to play and
he had retired. So then he gets them to ship
him out to the Raiders. The Raiders move mountains to
get him. They need a quarterback. Jason Campbell's not good
enough for maybe Jason Campell got hurt. I can't remember um.
But what ended up happening was, you know, they tried
(03:45):
to use him in limited on limited basis, and when
he first got there, when when he first got there,
they tried to, uh, they tried to just barely use
him and and spoon feed him. And he came in
against the Kansas City Chiefs and he wasn't ready, he
(04:10):
didn't know the offense. He's under pressure. He threw three interceptions,
He's eight of twenty one, and they lost twenty to nothing.
The next week he comes back in and they take
on the Denver Broncos. They lose, and he throws three
more picks. Now he's got six interceptions in his first
two games. Carson Palmer played ten games for the Oakland
(04:32):
Raiders that year. They went four and six. He threw
sixteen picks, but six of which were in those first
two games. And and my my logic behind Cam Newton, Look,
he's only played in one place his whole career. Granted,
different offensive systems and I'm sure some different furbiage, but
you have no real offseason. Preseason is cutting half. There's
(04:52):
no preseason games. If you're Cam Newton, you're like, look,
could I come in and start with a limited playbook
and do the best that I can sure? Or I
can come in and just have a couple of package
of a couple of plays, a couple different sets and
show people while I learned the rest of the offense.
They put Carson Palmer in the deep end to have
him swim, and he nearly drowned, and Carson Palmer is
(05:15):
a better and more well rounded quarterback at this point
in time in his career than Cam Newton, who, of course,
at the peak of his career was an m v
P cars. Carsonalmers terrific, but no one can there's no
there's no magic view with switch teams and then a
week later, knowing all the hot reads, everything within the offense,
especially when it's with you know, no matter how similar
(05:38):
if you played for the coach before which he had,
it still makes it really really difficult to to do
and and shut short notice. And if you read any
of these reports out of New England, they all say
that Jared Stidhom do unlook grady, He's thrown some picks,
that Brian Hoyer, who's been in the system longer played
in the NFL war looks the best, and Cam Newton
(06:00):
looks looks healthy, just looks a bit lost. So do
I think Belichick wants the platoon quarterbacks? Of course, nobody
wants to between a quarterback, but he doesn't have preseason
games to make a decision. And if you look at
their early season schedule it is an absolute beast. They've
(06:22):
also lost a ton from defense, they're gonna have to
be better on offense, more than conservative on offense. They
opened up with Miami, which is a winnable game, but
then they go to Seattle, the Raiders at home to
the Kansas City Chiefs. You know, in the first five games,
six games of the season, you have the two teams
(06:43):
in the Super Bowl and the Seahawks on the road.
As what you got, that's not a great schedule. So
I I understand this logic, because what what you don't
want if you're Cam Newton is to be putting one
of those Carson palmer Ty situations where they play you
too early, thinking, ah, he'll figure it out. But you
(07:05):
can lose your confidence, you can get hurt, you can
flat out screwed up and hurt your reputation even with
the team if you're playing under the sort of darrest
he usually comes when you don't know the offense like
the back of your hand, and no one can considering
the amount of time that he's had with the team,
and oh yeah, by the way, he's not getting all
the number one reps to himself. There's a lot that
goes into why these guys don't want to come off positions.
(07:28):
Don't want to share positions. He shouldn't want to be
a platoon guy. He's a former m v P. Got it.
You signed the one million dollar deal. You trusted Belichick.
Trust Belichick. Now, if he wants to bring you in
for one series at a time, I'll go for it.
You'll be more rested, you'll be healthier, you'll be sharper,
you'll be fresh. You may still run the football just
(07:49):
as much as you would have if you played the
whole game, but you'll be much sharper, much different, and
you give a change of pace for blind Brian Floorer's day.
These coach to prepare for. Can't prepare for an offense
you haven't seen, and it's hard to ppare for an
offense you may have seen, but it's totally different than
the base offense that you see. So this is not
me saying I'm pro platoon, But if that's the decision
(08:12):
that they think about making, because Camp just doesn't know
the offense yet, Hoyer has a ceiling and Jared Stidham
is not ready that that feels okay to me. It
feels quite all right to me, quite all right. Eight seven, seven,
nine nine. Fox is the phone number half past the

(08:56):
It's simple pain relief. Blue Emio maximum pain Relief works

about the NFL season, upcoming college football season won't happen
the NBA bubble? What if I told you a Major
League baseball team is better than they've ever been? Surprise you?

(09:16):
live edition of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at
three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio
and the I Heart Radio. A app and a fascinating
matchup got Steven Adams guarding Eric Gordon at times, Eric
Gordon Garden Steven Adams Uh, but uh, or Land, excuse me,
(09:41):
Houston taking on Oklahoma City is a fascinating matchup. And
now Oklahoma Vidio is small, and I believe New Orleans
no well as their center and Darius basically getting a
lot more run. The rookie who did not play in
college struggles with his jump shot, made a couple of
shots here in Orlando. But keep and eye in Houston
and Oklahoma's city, which is in the first half and
(10:03):
a lot of Austin Rivers dribbling is uh is noticeable?
Noticeable and Air Gordon straight up score. Uh? Ramos, what
should I be talking about in baseball? Ramos should know this? Uh? Obviously,
Well the Dodgers, Dodgers. What about the Dodgers. Yeah, they're
(10:24):
the best team in baseball. That's what the Dodgers. It's
really interesting, right, Like if the Dodgers last year where
we're incredible and they've been to the World Series now
several times over, I haven't won it. I get it. Um.
Obviously they feel like they were robbed against the Houston Astros.
Maybe everything else looks different if the Astros thing doesn't happen, right,
(10:48):
if they beat the Astros, do we look at at
the Dodgers and all their players differently. But it's with
with with all this stuff going on in sports, it's
like no one our side of me, I guess, is
going to mention how good the Dodgers are. They're eighteen
and eight, um, and they had one what eight in
(11:10):
a row before losing, I believe it was it was
it was, it was eight in a row. And I
also think you got a factory and they lost to
the Mariners. Um, yesterday, you know, they swept the Angels. Uh,
they took they split with the Padres, and they took
the first two from the Mariners and now they have,
(11:33):
you know, the four game series with the Mariners. Whatever.
But is this today everybody's talking about Fernando Tatiss and
what an incredible start he's having, and he is. And
I guess you could point to the fact that the
Yankees are good, expectedly so, though they've lost a couple
in a row, that the Cubs are good, maybe unexpectedly
so the Dodgers. Here's how much better the Dodgers are
(11:54):
than anybody else. The Dodgers are in spite of the
fact that they just lost. They're a plus sixty one
in run deferential. Okay, so in just twenty six games,
they've scored sixty one runs total more than their opponents.
The next closest team in Major League Baseball in rud
(12:16):
and differential is both the Twins and the Yankees, with
thirty three more runs than their opponent. They're not just
beating people, they're being there crap out of people, and
they're doing so without the four million people that normally
filed into Dodger Stadium and makes it a pretty tough
place to play. It is weird all the things we
(12:36):
talked about in sports, and I was there's a guy
who's a what do you call a bagger? Is there
is there a name for a bagging associate? Right? Like
we no longer say flight attendant, We say or steward?
Is we say flight attendant? Right? We we no longer
say secretary, we say executive assistant. Is there a name
(12:59):
for bagger that's different, that's a little bit more um
refined than just he's a bagger? Ramost you know, like
when you a guy who bags your groceries as a
grocery store, what you were talking about a bagger? Like?
What is his job? Jeez, I've I think bagger is
what I've always tried. I haven't heard anything new that
(13:21):
comes unless you've heard something new. I have not. I
have not. I have not gavined as I'm you want
to share? Is there any any other words? Courtesy clerk
Courtesy Clerk. That's Lee Lee Hobson Courtesy Clerk Hurley. Okay, possible.
I mean I'll give it a maybe, a definite maybe.
(13:43):
Um Okay. So anyway, this guy is he's like a
he's a fan. It's pretty cool. And he's like, man,
last time you were here, I didn't get my good
questions it. I was like, all right, you've got a
walk you out. So I didn't really. I just I
got a couple of bags of ice. That's it. I
(14:03):
got a faulty ice maker deal. And so I just
been by. So you're walking out and he's like, hey,
how come you and Colin don't ever talk about baseball?
And I said, because nobody cares. I was like, take
the Dodgers at the times, like Dodgers one eight in
a row. He's like, yeah, why don't you guys talk
about Like what's there to talk about? They're awesome. So
I guess maybe I was trying to figure out a
way to talk about them and saying like, how how
(14:25):
can you be that this dominant and be so unrecognizable
in the national landscape. But that's generally how it is,
and I'd like to say that I'm responsible, Like, look,
if I talk more about baseball, then I won't be
guilty of not talking enough baseball. The problem is that
nothing I've ever been told or shown in terms of
listeners say they want to listen to me talk about baseball,
(14:46):
so I won't. The Dodgers are awesome. That's all you
need to know. Be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug gott Leap Show week days at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific. Let's get the Ross Dellinger,
who joins us from sports illustration covering college at Paul H. Ross.
What do you make of the state of the Big
Ten as of today? Probably maybe in a slightly better
(15:12):
place than yesterday. Kevin Warren released his letter and he
kind of made the media around last night. I've included
calling several reporters after his release of the letter trying
to explain the Big Ten's decision. But there is still
(15:34):
internal struck there and probably will be for a long
time after a decision like that, I think a lot
of parents a Big ten players still want more explanation.
And I think I saw where the parents are still
set on traveling. I believe maybe tomorrow to Big ten
(15:54):
headquarters to confront him in person during a pandemic. So
things are things are not super rosy there right now.
I don't I don't what what further explanations do they need?
I don't really understand. I get that everybody's piste got
it noted, and then maybe they felt like they weren't
communicated with enough. But what what more could be? You know,
(16:19):
they have enough doctors that think it's not worth the risk.
They're trying to protect their kids. Like, I get it,
We're still you're still on scholarship. You're not gonna lose
a year of eligibility. Like what am I? What are
we all missing here? Yeah? All great, all great points
in questions. I think. I guess what happened with The
(16:40):
Big Kid is when it released, when it made its
announcement it it kind of coincided with the pac Twelves announcement, right,
and the Pact Twelves announcement came with a long document.
It came with this zoom with a commissioner that reporters
were on and doctors were available for to talk and
school press the talk. There was just more transparency I
(17:02):
think around the decision. The Big Kin did not do that.
In fact, Kevin Warren was on the Big ten network
and was asked a slew of questions that basically he avoided.
I So I'm guessing they just want more transparency. I
don't know, I know what you're saying. You know, well,
their medical experts and I talked to a couple of
them last week for a story that I think we
(17:24):
talked about me and you a few days ago, and
they they say, look, it's it's too risky there. There's
too much unknown about the virus. And you know what,
what's not helping the Big ten is that the SEC
in in the a SEC and the Big twelve still
paying the play, you know, and I'm sure the parents
see that and they, I guess, just want more transparency
(17:47):
on this decision. Rostellens joining us on the dug Outlive
show on Fox Sport Trading. Okay, then you have the
other side, which is point out Big twelve, a CEC SEC.
You've had Syracuse guys hold out from practice, You've had
Oklahoma have increased exposures, you have all kinds of stuff.
What what let's start with a big twelve. They seem
(18:09):
to be the leaders this thing, have a pretty good plan.
How confident are those big twelve schools that you talked
to that it's going to work? Everybody? Is the word
I keep getting from everybody, not just a Big twelve,
but sec A, CEC as well is hopeful. We're hopeful. Uh,
there's there's not as much you know, maybe a month
(18:30):
ago or two months ago, you you heard a lot
of we're optimistic, Uh, that kind of word. You're You're
not as much hearing that as much as there's hope
right now from a lot of people, a lot of
leaders in college sports. Uh. I think what's happening, and
we've seen it the last few days and everybody expected
(18:51):
it to happen, is that students are returning to campuses
and there's a giant spike. It's happening in North Carolina,
Notre Dame. Uh um, there's some other places uh where
the just so some things happening. I think Wyoming, even
Old Miss had some outbreaks with the athletes as students
came back, so everybody knew this is gonna happen. We're
(19:13):
having outbreaks and now schools are closing. North Carolina closed.
It's in person classes and actually I think sent basically
since students home. So North Carolina right now is kind
of football is kind of experiencing a bubble. They're working
out on campus without students in in C State just
announced a similar move today. Uh Notre Dame is doing
(19:34):
doing a similar thing for at least two weeks. They've
sent their students back to the dorm quarantine them. Uh
no in person classes. So everything that's happening right now
with the students returning, and these spikes certainly aren't making
leaders feel real good about things. They expected it, but
(19:54):
obviously it's it's not um, it's not making them feel
better about a college football season unless they can kind
of do Doug with what kill did, right, It's kind
of back into a bubble situation in the students home
can't do it, but let's football players on campus training.
(20:14):
Rostellinger joining us in the Doug Gali Show. I agree
with you, like you know what what what's lost with
a lot of people is a good portion of these
athletes already take mostly online courses. Anyway, the football bubble
kind of exists with the exception of you know, the
the weekend nights in which their their time isn't occupied,
that's you can go out, which which you would assume
(20:35):
everybody is supposed to lose out on. Right now is
we're kind of trying to trying to to to stem
this virus. Okay, what what does Let's assume those three
conferences go forward and the other two big boys do not.
What do you think the season looks like? Very very weird,
really bizarre. There's going to be those three power conferences
(20:55):
and then right now at least as of now, three
group of five smaller conferences in the Sun Belt and
the a C in Conference USA. So it's gonna be weird. Uh,
there's there's no doubt about it. Well, we'll be seeing
stadiums and now we're starting to get more information on
stadium capacity. Will be seeing twenty looks like you know,
(21:17):
stadium is full, so at most about a third of
a stadium will be full in some states. Some games
will not have fans at all. That that's been announced,
So it will be very weird. No no bands or
smaller bands in the stands, maybe hardly any nobody on
the sidelines except maybe still you know, players, coaches, staff.
(21:39):
It'll be a weird looking thing. It would be a
weird environment, just bizarre setting for for all of it.
Uh and we might not through a season. That's the thing.
We're gonna have interruptions. I mean, doctors, administrators, they already
know we're gonna have interruptions. You know, they know because
they've built the into their schedules extra weeks to move
(22:00):
games around. Uh, So we're gonna have interruptions. It seems
like a long shot, Doug. That will actually complete that
everybody who starts the season will actually complete a full season.
But it'll it'll certainly be be weird. Yeah, it'll be weird.
I think it's a good way. I think will complete it.
I don't think there will be the disruptions, but I
(22:22):
could be. I could be way off on it. I
just do I uh, you know, I I got a
feeling they'll figure out how to get it worked out.
It will, but it will be super awkward. What about
the idea of the transfers. Seems like we're getting late
in the game, but there is this push for Hey,
if we're not gonna play, let them go play somewhere else.
Do you think there will be a rusher transfers from
(22:43):
Big ten schools to other schools. No, I don't think so.
And it's it's because the n t a A. Although
they haven't said it publicly, most administrators and leaders have
at least told me the NA does not expect to
grant waivers two players from schools that have canceled fall
(23:04):
to transfer to schools that playing to play in the fall.
They don't plan to to grant immediate eligibility waivers. So
that kind of puts that to rest. Um should they
in your mind? Should they? They've granted waivers for much less, right,
much less? So yes, um. But something else to keep
(23:26):
in mind too. I'll say we're a mid or in
through mid August um in in players or teams are
in camps. There are not a lot of roster spots.
You know, in the NFL you got the roster spots.
In college, you have roster spots to have five scholarships
and you have the twenty five initial counter the new players.
(23:47):
In most teams, especially the big high profile teams, they
already have their They can't take anymore, so I think
it would be tough to find landing spots for some
of these guys any out. Yeah, and then then you
get into what are they gonna do next year when
you have guys getting this year of eligibility back. You know,
(24:08):
you have some guys fifth year. I'm sure they'll be
guys that try and get their sixth year or whatever.
But you have a senior class, the non NFL guys
that are still giving around then even you're coming freshman
class like that will be that could be super interesting. Um, yeah,
for sure, there are ram big ramifications right for the UH.
It's a good decision that they made obviously for everybody,
(24:31):
all fall athletes, no matter what happens this year to
get an extra year UH fifth year in some cases
of sixth year in some cases for those who have
red shirted medical rid shot. But it causes roster issues
and it's going to cause players spots potentially, you know,
if team you're coming back because schools can't afford the
(24:51):
additional scholarships are already financially stressed uring this time that
they're not going to be able to afford or not
at least to choose not to pay for them into
a senior returning It is going to be asked a look,
we can't pay for your scholarship, You're gonna have to transfer,
or either that senior is going to take a spot
from somebody on the current roster and they're going to
have to transfer. So there's there's a lot of ramifications here.
(25:15):
I do not, dug expect very many schools to pay
for those additional scholarships. I think you're gonna see a
lot of movement. No I and and there's a lot
of things are gonna change, you know the I think
the days of the huge contracts are probably over for now.
I think that, you know, one of the things that
people have copied for SABAN is the volume of coaches
(25:39):
on your staff. I think those aren't you know, everybody's
mean costs because they're losing money, Like, unless you're totally necessary,
you're not going to be coaching in the near future.
They'll be cutting back. Here's I'll give you a little
something that I've I've thought about. I'm a big twelve um.
The league hasn't been able to win a game since
they've gone to the playoffs. It's been Oklahoma in it
(26:00):
and and they haven't been able to win a game.
The Big Twelve has struggled for footing um since they
lost A and M in Nebraska and Colorado and Missouri
in terms of being judged at the level of the SEC,
and even the Big Ten has surpassed it after the
Big Ten was kind of a little bit of a
joke for a while at the very top. This could
(26:20):
be the huge year for the Big Twelve that they need.
I don't know if Texas is good enough for that,
but they do have same Elnger back at quarterback. I
don't know of Oklahoma is good enough for that or
Oklahoma State, but if it goes if this thing goes off,
this could finally be the year where the Big Twelve
gets back in the discussion. Maybe not the level of
the SEC, but at that next level in terms of
(26:42):
conference which they've been struggling to get to. Yeah, this
is a great point because the teams that the conferences
that have canceled their fall already, they're taking a risk
obviously rolling dice on plane in the spring. What would
have happened if they don't get to play in the spring,
then all of these other conferences, including the Big Twelve,
(27:03):
like you're talking about, they played a season. You you
you have a little leg up there in a lot
of ways. I was turning to somebody from the A
a C. The American Conference they always call themselves. Part
of the power of five is the number six, the
power six, and part of the reason they're stay in it. Hey,
they want to be the power six. They want to
get a leg up on everybody. And I think what
you're talking about, it's a it's a good point that
(27:25):
the Big twelve can get more eyeballs. First of all,
on TV, right there's not going to be as many games,
and maybe they can squeeze into that championship race in
a smaller field, and that that is a whole Another
topic is the CFP. Right do we have the college
football playoffs without the Big ten in the Pac twelve.
I mean, right now everything looks like a go They're
(27:47):
they're gonna have it. But you're right, this might be
a good chance for a conference like the Big twelve too,
yet not just compete for a championship and get in
the playoff, but maybe win some games in this kind
of bizarre year and make a big step forward for
future years. Well, can't wait. Hopefully they get on the field.
(28:09):
I'm a guy who rose for football. I do think
that the kids are are are better off on campus
where they're being cared for and treated and they you know,
you figure out, you know, who test positive and what
that means for their own personal future. But we will,
we'll see it. It is if nothing else, it is fascinating, fascinating.

by NITZA. Let's let's get to what the Fox says.
Now say, Uh, this is Colin Cowherd talking about the
(29:36):
plan in Miami for Tua. Ryan Fitzpatrick is going to
start for the Miami Dolphins. This is great news for Tua.
This is a really, really bad year to start as
a rookie quarterback. And I want you to think about this.
We would all admit, Patrick, Mahomes and Lamar Jackson look
like superstars. I mean you're talking to m v p s.
(29:57):
One of them you consider the best quarterback ever. One
of the was just voted Lamar Jackson best player in
the NFL by players nfl dot Com. They weren't ready
to start year one. Now, just think about this, contextualize this.
They had great head coaches Andy re John Harball, They
had very good rosters Miami doesn't They had preseason they
had O T A s. They had stability in the franchise.
Baltimore's rock solid ownership front office, Kansas City rock solid
(30:20):
ownership front office, and Mahomes and Lamar Jackson with all
of those additives, were not ready to play. Joe Burrow
is gonna get mauled. Cincinnati has none of that, and
Miami has very little of that. Miami now has a
second year and coach, a new offensive coordinator, They're rebuilding
their old line, and two of their wide receivers opted out.
This is not good. Uh yeah, I mean I would generally.
(30:44):
Plus The thing with TWA is what is the rush
If he's going to be your quarterback for twenty years
and you're rebuilding, he doesn't need to play the first
week of the season, doesn't need to play this season
to be totally can id you wanted to play some
and he will. Ryan Fitzpatrick is perfect. He's done this before.
He's handed the thing off to to you know, you
(31:06):
name the quarterback from Tyrod Taylor. It wasn't really groomed
to be his replacement, but he did. Um. I don't
think it was him that started in front of Carson.
I think he replaced Carson when Carson got hurt. It
was kitten that it started ahead of Carson. But this
is what Ryan Fitzpatrick has done in the past. There's
no reason he won't do it now, which is groom
(31:28):
the air apparent, and at some time when it's appropriate,
he'll step aside whether he wants to or not. Are
playing well or not? And the deck is stacked against
Miami because of the loss, because they're rebuilding their offensive line.
They've lost two wide receivers. They're very much building for
the future. And to A is that guy. But the
future it's not today. This makes altogether too much sense
(31:52):
and I completely agree with it. Uh and everyone knows
the risks of driving drunk. People get her or killed,
You get arrested, encourage legal expenses, even lose your job.
If you think drunk driving is no big deal, you
could not be more wrong. Drive sober, or get pulled over.
Today is National Radio Day. You wear that ramos that
(32:13):
today is National Radio Day. I am I've been noticing
it through Instagram and Twitter and all that good stuff,
So yes, I am aware. What what ld you do radio?
I wanted to do radio when I was in sixth grade.
I used to listen to the radio a lot and
tape it on my recorder, and uh so I was
wanted to do radio. So I knew a long time
ago that I wanted to be in this business. What
(32:34):
what did what did you listen to that long ago? Oh? Well,
it was l a like HR stations, Like it was
like a kiss FM, which was out here, Bruce Fidal
and uh Rick D's and people like that, Rick D's
in the Moon and tell us what time it is
and tell us what the climate is. M Yeah, I
(32:55):
first listened to Rick D's. I we moved out here.
I was going into kid garden and I don't remember
radio before that, but going into second grade, guy named
Wayne Marino who became a very famous high school coach
around here, coach the Abandoned Boys. Uh, he used to
pick us up in his Toyota little mini pickup truck
and we'd sit in the back of the campershell on
(33:17):
it and we listened to Rick D's in the Moon
and we have the D Slee's right, remember the D
Sleeves Report. But that was the summer where Madonna saying, Boardline,
board Lane, feels like it's going to lose my mind.
You just keep pump pushing My love over the bowline.
(33:39):
That's number one in the Southland Rick D's anyway, Um okay,
I'll tell you what what what brought me to screw
me to sports radio upcoming? What about you, Dan Buyer?
When did you first say like, you know what? Oh damn,
I mean, I'm sorry, Isaac Bowing Crown? What would you
want you first say? Like, you know what? What do
your radio? Growing up in southern California and getting to
listen to Vince Gully and check her literally and your
(34:02):
Lakers basketball basketball. I mean, what's amazing about chick Hearn
is all of the different expressions in basketball that essentially
he made up. Slam dunk. He'slam dunk slam dunk. I mean,
(34:23):
chick Hearn's sayings are really uh really really interesting. Of course,
his most famous one is the games in the refrigerator.
The doors closed, the lights are out, the eggs are cool,
and the butter's getting hard and the jellos jiggling. Right,
that's when the game was over. That's what what he would. Uh,
that's what you said. But he had a lot of
chick is ums right there are now like they're basically
(34:44):
cliche tiki tach foul that was him. Air Ball was him.
Air Ball was him. Air Ball was him. Charity stripe
was the free to line. That was it? That was
a chicken him boo birds. That was all chick Hearn
picked his pocket. Check Hern didn't draw iron chick Hern. Um,
(35:06):
let's see here, what else was there? What? Yo yowing
up and down, Yo yowing the ball up and down
the court? Yes, throws in a prayer. It's answered in
and out. Heartbreak um. And he used to call he
used to call the end of game nervous time. I
didn't like that one. I wasn't a big fan, but
I mean I love check Hern. So when I was
a kid, it's National radio days. Doug gotlip show on
(35:30):
Fox sports Radio. We Sports Radio really started in New
York w f A, New York. We used to go
home around this time, late July, August, really August. Every
year we go to New York. When my dad was
from Connecticut, when my mom was from and we spent
like three weeks. There was hot and sticky and gross
and I go play balls. Some in the park, we
go to the beach. Some we just hang out with families.
(35:52):
Some I don't know. It was one of the random
summer vacations, but we listened to Mike and the Dog,
Mike and the that's a win, that's the that's the loss,
that's a wind dog. Anyway, we listened to Mike and
the Dog in the afternoons. And then when we moved,
you know, back in southern California, there was a guy
lee Ley Hack saw Hamilton's I Want to Talk sports
(36:13):
with you from pow Way to Escondido. He was on
in San Diego, but the story station was out of Mexico,
so so big you could hear in southern California loud
and clear at night. They had Jim Roman, and I
was just like, this is cool, man, you can just
get to talk trash and talk about sports. I'm in,
where do I do that? And then during my year,
so I went to Notre Dame, left went to junior
(36:36):
college for a year, practice with the team, helped coach
the team, but didn't play. So I had the weekends
to myself and I had a brother is UH assistant
coach at cow Poli San Luis Obispo, and UH former
girlfriend who was at Santa Barbara. So I drive up
the coast and that's when ESPN Radio started and I
would listen to Game Night, which by the way, was
the first show I was on, and I used to
(36:56):
so I I autumn. I just I love sports. I
love talking trash about sports. It was just something I
did anyway. Uh It. Here's the thing about radio. It's
you know, I love it. I'll never not do radio
or audio or what however. We evolve here and you
can download this and all the podcast type in all
of Ball of my Basketball podcast, or this for the
full show Doug Gotlip Show podcast. What I love about
(37:19):
radio is not just the length of time and the storytelling,
but if you have something really, really gripping. The greatest
comment you can give to the radio guy was I
was driving somewhere. I got there, but I didn't get
out of the car until I listened to the end
of your interview or your rant or whatever. And if
you listen through a commercial break for something even better.
(37:41):
So Happy National Radio Day. Some of your thoughts at
Gottlieb Show. What's wrong with the Lakers, the Clippers, the Bucks?
Who are we most concerned about? I'll tell you next
in the Doug Gotlip Show
