(00:27):
gott Leap Show, Fox Spots Radio. We're gonna get you
a smatter wick. It's smat. You know what they call
the guy who graduates dead last in medical school. Doctor
all right? I mean, the most Chargers story ever is
Tyrod Taylor set to start Game two opening up their

(00:48):
beautiful six billion dollar stadium. They didn't put a penny
in for it, and they don't pay a penny for rent.
And honestly, I love the Charges that my I love
their uniforms. Their management staff is a bunch of really
smart people. Uh they're coaching staff I think does an
excellent job, and I there personnel is is terrific. But

(01:09):
I mean, for Tyrod Taylor, the story to come out
today that he was trying to play with the crack
rib got a shot in the ribs and it went
through and punctured his lung. Is like the most Charger
story ever, and it does bring that old joke. There's
also a joke and only the guy who would you
call the guy who graduates last medical school doctor? There's
you guys don't know. Abe Levins was Abe Lemons was

(01:32):
a longtime famous coach and most notably University of Texas.
He had these great one liners and he'd say, well,
doctors barry their mistakes. We got ours on scholarships. Anyway,
did you guys see the picture of Bill Belichick at
his press conference today? Did anybody see that picture? He's

(01:55):
wearing a cut off hoodie, and I believe his mother
passed away, uh recently, So condolences to Bill Belichick. Obviously
that the tragic story of James White, who's dad was
an incredible leader within the football community of South Florida,
also passed away, obviously going back to Sunday in a

(02:15):
car accident. But if you saw Bill Belichick, Look, there's
lots of funny lines. I tweeted out one. This is
what it looks like to try and uh, to try
and defend Russell Wilson. You know everybody has that favorite sweatshirt.
But if you watch Bill Belichick, like this is who

(02:37):
he is? It really We said this in regards to
the book that came out called The Dynasty, which I
thought was fascinating and you can pick it up, you
can read. It's also an audiobooks where it talks about
basically Bill Belichick didn't change what change was. Gisel didn't

(03:00):
like the way Tom Brady was treated. A little bit
of a backstory which I don't believe was covered in
the book, was there was a time when Tom Brady
was getting a helicopter out of Foxborough. Have you've ever
been to Gillette Stadium? It's um uh in terms of
location and proximity to several major cities, it's fantastic. It's

(03:25):
twenty minutes maybe from Boston, thirty forty minutes from Providence.
It's roughly an hour fifteen maybe maybe an hour and
a half from Hartford. Uh, probably forty five minutes from Springfield.
Like they really are New England's team. The problem is

(03:46):
there's one road in and one road out, or you
could take the train, and even the train, I don't
think it goes right to the stadium. Never done that.
So like if you commit to going to a Patriots
game and you're gonna tailgate, and let's say the game
kicks off at you know, I've done a Monday night
football game there where we went. They played the Jets.

(04:09):
It was freezing cold. Me and a bunch of buddies
went up. We got tickets and we literally took off
I think like five hours for the game. Was like
an hour forty hour drive from where I lived at
the time. We get there and it's like we get there,
I don't know, three hours for the game, but it
it took us almost an hour to get from the
freeway to the stadium, which is like five miles, but

(04:31):
there's one road in, one road out. Anyway, there was
a time about I'm gonna say a decade ago, maybe
even more fifteen years ago, by a decade ago, when
Brady was getting helicoptered out of games and the rest
of the players like, dude, wait what and whether it's
Belichick or somebody said like x N on the helicopter, hey, right,
can't be that's can't sorry, Tom, Can you can get

(04:53):
a car service? We can't have you chopper and in,
chopper and out. That's what the owner does nobody else
does that. But if you read the book, basically, Geeselle
was like, why are you treating him just like any
other guy? In Belichick's kind of like this is what
we do. And even the owner, Robert Kraft, was like,
I think you should treat him better. He's the greatest

(05:14):
quarterback ever. I looked at that sweatshirt today, the disheveled look,
the matter of fact approach, and I can textualize it
with it. With this, they were within a yard of
being the Seahawks in Seattle. I want you, I want

(05:34):
you to I want you to remember this. The New
England Patriots we were told didn't have the personnel to
compete with the elite of the National Football League last year.
That's why Tom Brady was smart to get out of town. Right,
look at he's thrown too. You know my husband, can
I catch the ball? And thought about can I do
it all himself? Right? That was Giselle after West Welker

(05:56):
dropped what was when we go back like that was
not an easy catching super Bowl. He had to totally
lay out and he didn't catch it. Um. They had
I believe eight guys opt out, most notably Dante high
Tower from their defense due to COVID concerns. Rob Gronkowski

(06:19):
did not consider coming back to the Patriots. When he unretired,
Tom Brady took his talents to the other side of Florida.
They had several retirements in the off season. They lost
Dante Scarneki, who's their legendary offensive line coach. And off

(06:40):
the dumpster heap, they signed Cam Newton without O T
A S, without a traditional offseason program, kind of sight
unseen to a million dollar contract. And you know what,
you don't win their division again, you know, or or
be right there with the Bills. Now. He just he's

(07:04):
a football coach and he's the best that there has
ever been. Let's just figure out how we can win
this game. Like, well, they didn't shut down Russell Wilson. No,
you know why, because Russell Wilson's awesome. But they did enough,
just enough to put themselves in position to have the
football be at the one yard line and and and look,

(07:24):
I didn't like the play call because there should have
been a pass option little r p O. But what
have you often been frustrated by with coaches in football? Man?
I just wish they would get the ball to their
best player, right, same thing at basketball. I mean, you
just gotta get the ball to your best player. Okay,

(07:45):
play call b Damn. It can be as bad as
you wanted to be. But the fact is that they
got their best player the football, and everybody else was
blocking for their best player. Like, that's football, one on one.
Let's get the ball our best players, give me a
chance to win the game. And Bobby Wagner and a
couple of Seahawks blew up to play. But I'm looking

(08:07):
at this bad scientist and I'm thinking to myself, this
is amazing salary cap era. They had this great dynasty.
Lest we forget that, coming off of the greatest regular
season we have scenes since, not since the seventy two Dolphins,
and within a whisker of win the Super Bowl, they
lost their superstar quarterback in his prime and they still

(08:28):
won ten games with Matt Castle, who never sniffed ten games. Again,
a guy who hadn't started a game in college. How
about that then, Like, look, the roster has been crumbing
the past couple of years, but last year really wasn't
a great roster, especially in the offensive side the ball,
not for lack of trying. They signed wide receiver after
wide receiver. They traded for a for a wide receiver.

(08:50):
In the middle of the year. They just couldn't get
it going. They drafted running backs, you know, they trying
to fix their offensive line. They still won ten twelve games,
and yeah they lost at home to the Tennessee Titans,
but it wasn't like they were blown out and Tennessee
had to do everything they could to sap the clock
so they couldn't give Brady the football with a chance

(09:11):
to win the game. Now you lose Brady, you lose
Dante Hi Tower and all these other guys to COVID,
you lose other guys in your offensive line, coach to retirement,
and you still find ways to win games with Cam Newton,
who Cam Newton hadn't really played meaningful football in two years.

(09:32):
Don't ever change Bill Belichick, and he's not going to.
He's the same guy every year, with the same sweatshirt
every Tuesday. He's just a football coach. He does if
the football coach was the Uni bomber, they would have
a similar sense. It does look like a bit of

(09:55):
a mug shot, it does. I've seen the other tweets
where people have said this is what happens when you
binge succession. You know you been. This is what I
looked like binging on Bosch, whereas the TV shows this
is what netflix ing all day and all night actually
looks like. I love it as a football coach. And

(10:17):
oh yeah, by the way, did you did you see
the quote from Bruce Arians about Rob Gronkowski? Did you
guys see it? Uh? Yeah, this is what This is
what Bruce Arians said. We haven't had that many red
zone opportunities, and I don't see him running forty yards
past people anymore. We brought him into play tight end.

(10:39):
If that means no catches, that means no catches. In
other words, Bill Belichick knew when Rob Gronkowski retired he
was done. They were trying to trade Rob Gronkowski, but
they couldn't get him to commit to playing, and he
was making too much money because he can't run anymore.
He is essentially, you know, a seven what is it?

(11:03):
A sixth offensive lineman. Brady is not the same as
he used to be. Gronks not the same. How Stephen
Gotskowski missed three field goals and an extra point. Who
had him last year? The Patriots. It's pretty remarkable, pretty
pretty remarkable, bad news for the number one quarterback that

(11:26):
was close to winning a Super Bowl. I'll share them
with you next. Be sure to catch the live edition
of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three p m.
Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio in the I
Heart Radio ah AP Doug Olive Show Fox Sparks Radio.
Saw this story, um Kyle Shanahan said earlier today, I'd

(11:47):
be surprised if Jimmie that's Jimmy Garoppolo gets back later
in the week. Nick Mullins is ready to go. He's
got a lot of playing time with us in two
thousand eighteen. That's prepared him for moments like this. That's
the head coach of a team that just played eight
for the Super Bowl. Now, combined with the fact that
they just played for the Super Bowl is the fact
that there's just one on one in this year, but

(12:08):
they play the Giants. The Giants are disaster, all right.
They lost. See Kwan Barkley uh Sterling Shepard was placed
on I R. Like the Giants, they that that gun
has no pop to it. On the other hand, the
Niners staying out in uh New York after after being
the Jets and nude they're the injuries are ridiculous. Have

(12:30):
you have you read the injury chart for the Niners
like this is the Niners were one of the most
talented team, if not the most talented team in football.
Solomon Thomason injury reserve with an a c L. Nick
bos Andrew reserved with the a c L uh Dre
Green Laws questionable. D Ford of course has a bad back.

(12:52):
George Kittle questionable has got the m c L injury
where he most urt, hurt his knee. To Coleman has
a bad knee. Jimmy Garoppolo has a bad ankle. Richard
Sherman's on I are not expected back till Week five
at the earliest. Chris Thompson, a wide receiver on I

(13:12):
are Deebo Samuel on I are like dude, they are
banged up, But but the idea that I got, like,
I understand Jimmy Garoppolo playing through the ankle as much
as he could last week. You're against the Giants, it's
not really gonna they can't beat you. You just feel
like they just don't have the talent to beat you.

(13:35):
And the Niners have more difficult games to come, they
get back home, they take on Philadelphia, who they should beat, Miami,
who they should beat. Then it's the Rams on Sunday
Night Football. Then New England, Seattle, Green Bay, New Orleans. Yikes,
so you gotta try, and you'd assume you're gonna be
healthy by that time. So part of me thinks this
is Kyle Shanahan saying, like, look, we can women, Nick Mollins,

(13:57):
he's fine, and College Hannah and things. I can win
with any quarterback. But um, there is a growing divide there.
There is a growing sense of frustration there between the
everyone in San Francisco who likes Jimmy Garoppolo and thinks

(14:24):
he's good enough and the guys like, dude, how many
times do I have to see Jimmy Garoppolo throw an
untimely interception to to to understand that's who Jimmy g is.
You know, you start throwing it eight times in the playoffs,
you start getting conservad at the end of the Super
in the first half in the Super Bowl, when you
got the ball on a full boat of time outs

(14:46):
and telling you all you need to know, and then
coming on the back of all of that, he didn't
play well week one. Granted, start to play without a
lot of surrounding talent, but this is and like, look
we talked about at this with with Dak Prescott didn't
have his book end tackles balled out. And I know
it's differently. You don't have your wide receivers, you don't

(15:07):
have George Kittle. It's different. I do understand that. Be
sure to catch the live edition of The Doug gott
Leap Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific.
Daniel Jeremiah joins us in The Doug Gollip Show on
Fox Sports Radio. Do you look closer to uh to
Bill Belichick suit and tie or Bill Belichick completely disheveled
during his press conference today? Right now, right now, I'm

(15:31):
firmly in the middle. I've got jeans on and like
a blue lemon shirt, so definitely not the tattered look.
But there's no tie around my neck. I can promise
you that there's there's there's no tie around your neck. DJ.
I mean, I know you cover the Chargers, and I
don't even want to get into the team doctor thing,
but why are they just gonna let why why not

(15:52):
just let Justin Herbert play? Why? Why I go back
to Tyrod Taylor. You know, the only thing I can say,
Doug on that is that, um, you know, coach Lenz
always had an affinity for Tyrod, and he's very well
liked and respected inside the locker room. So, um, I
think they wanted to give him a good long shot
at this thing. But you know, I understand when you

(16:14):
get to me, when you have a quarterback, a young quarterback,
he has to meet a certain threshold, you know, in
other words, he gets out on the field and it's
not too big for him, then man, all those reps
are priceless. If you can get him those reps um are,
They're going to get him up to speed a lot quicker.
And I thought he more than met that threshold with
the way he handled himself. I mean, there was times
he did not open up the right way on play action.

(16:36):
There were times where literally he was he was consulting
his wristband as he had a receiver in motion, just
a double check to make sure he knew what the
call was. But even with all that being said, the
ball got snapped and he just found a way to
make plays. So I was in I was really encouraged
by by what we saw. I mean, normally you get
these young guys, you've got you know, a couple of months,

(16:57):
at least a couple of weeks or a week. This
guy found out after a coin flip he was going
out there, so might might have been the best thing
to himself. Well, it might have been the best thing
for him though, right just like they're not ready for him.
Although Gus that interception was awful. Just run for the
first down, dude, because that was that was a game
changer for him. Yeah, exactly, And I think that is
another one of the reasons why you see, Um, the
coaches said that he wants to stick with Tyrod because

(17:19):
he feels like, you know, the Tyrod is not going
to turn the ball over something. He has proven he
will protect the football, and the way they're playing defense
right now, they feel like they've got a shot. But um,
you know, with Herbert on the whole, I thought it
was great. That's one play you'd like to have back.
And I think there's some other times where you can
be a little bit more aggressive with his legs. If
for the life of me can't remember the last time
I've seen a quarterback who did not lower his shoulder

(17:41):
knock a linebacker out cold. But that's how big and
strong he is. A he is a big old boy.
Um should we should we marvel at at Cam Newton
or the job that Josh McDaniels and Belichick are doing,
considering they didn't have the O T A S and

(18:01):
offseason program, they don't have a ton of weapons, and
yet Cam Newton looks like it'll it'll work in New England.
I think you. I think you got to spread the
credit around. I mean, I haven't seen Cam throw it
like that in a long time. And he threw it
really well, and they found matchups and and just uh
and and stuck to it. I mean, Jamal Adams was

(18:21):
kind of their their bulls eye and coverage and they
went at him with Julianette when they were able to
get that matchup, and they went at it a bunch. Um.
So I thought it was a nice game plan. I
think people kind of wondered, and I'm sure we've had
these conversations where you know, what does the offense look like?
In the past, they've been able to morph from one
week to the next, and is it gonna be more
It's gonna be a different offense with Cam. But is

(18:42):
it gonna be a static offense where we see the
same thing week after week after week and here we
are two weeks in and it's like the Patriots, you know,
same old, same old. I mean, one week one offense
looks completely different than what they're running out week two.
And the Cam's credit, he's been able to execute both
the both times. So it's gonna make them very difficult
to defend. I think going forward, let let me go

(19:02):
backwards to your game, which I shouldn't. But look, I
thought the Charges did a great job of putting pressure
on on Pat Mahomes. But I also thought that this
Chief's offense was more diverse than last year with Clyde
Edwards Laire and yet they really struggled for the most
part to move the football. Is there something that's that's
missing with the Chief's offense. It's not clicking like maybe

(19:24):
it should be. I would say that the I'd say
it this way. There's good news and bad news if
you're a Chiefs fan. The bad news is the Chargers
have kind of shown the formula of how to slow
this offense down. They've done it for the last couple
of years. Um, they have the formula. That's the bad news.
The good news is there aren't many teams that have
a defensive line like that. They can get after you

(19:44):
with four guys UM and be able to dedicate more
bodies into coverage to really only allow the one big
play over the top of Tyreek Kill. Outside of that,
they kept everything in front of him uh. And then
I think with him adding Kenneth Murray, you've got somebody
that's uh with that speed at the second level to
be able to get to the perimeter with all the
perimeter run game they do, and they try and get
you out leveraged and then you know, one false step

(20:06):
and then they they're they're out the back door. With
Kenneth Murray and his speed, he sucked a lot of
that stuff up. So UM. I think Gus Bradley's got
a really good beat on that on that offense. But
there's just not many teams that can line up with
with Bosa and Ingram and and lin Vaal Joseph who's
who is a fantasy a good player uh and Jerry
Hillery who has really come along. There's not many teams
that can line up with those dudes and not have

(20:27):
to put more bodies in the box. They can they
can win with those guys. Can you imagine if they
had Drew and James, I mean, like best defense in
football and and by the way, Drew trankil and outstanding
linebacker who you know broke his ankle also. I mean, like, look,
I think they might win the game if Melvin Ingram
doesn't jump off sides on on third down on that
overtime drive, which everybody has forgotten because they make can sit.

(20:49):
But you know, Budger makes three straight field goals from
fifty plus with the freezing and the off sides and
all that say, it was really interesting telling game. Uh,
Daniel Jeremiah joining us Doug gotlip show here on Fox
Sports Radio. UM, I'm trying to think what your breakdown
was when uh the you go back a couple of

(21:11):
years and we were getting ready for the draft and
and there was a big, strong arm quarterback named Josh
Allen and everybody said, well, you know Josh Allen inaccurate
And then where were you on Josh Allen? And has
he has he gotten better? Is it something they're doing,
like what has happened where some people are talking about
him as an early season MVP candidate. Well, he first

(21:34):
of all, no, but there was no denying how big
and how strong and how athletic he was. You know,
the Cam Newton comparisons were made with him, but I
think people kind of scoffed, But he is. He's not
quite as athletic as Cam, but he's a great athlete
at that size with a huge arm. Who was who
was playing on a terrible team at Wyoming Um. I
think Guy had him, Uh gosh, he was. He was

(21:56):
my fourth quarterback and I had him in the early twenties.
So he went he went higher than you know where
I had him graded. But the thing with him was
it's just with the decision making and some of the inaccuracy. Now,
I think you saw him clean up some of the
decision making. Last year. I thought you saw him take
huge strides there, and then this year we've seen the

(22:18):
accuracy take way up. So they've done a nice job
Brian day Ball and company there with that offensive working
with him, reigning in some of his his recklessness, and
then he's he's become more accurate. And part of that
is you go out and get Stefon Diggs and they've
got John Brown They've got speed that can open things up.
They've got a really good young tight end and knox Um.

(22:38):
So the w I I give Buffalo and their you know,
Brandon Bean and their their general manager, and then McDermott
their coaching staff. I don't know that there's a better
run team right now in terms of being all on
the same page and having a vision and executing it
than the Buffalo Bills. They have done a wonderful job,
and I think he's benefited from all that structure and
you're seeing that talent really start to come out. So

(23:00):
it was a great fit for Josh Allen. It's really
impressive what they've been able to do. Um uh, Tom Brady.
Now we have two weeks in the bank. Let me
start with Rob Gronkowski no catches. His coach came out
today and said, hey, he's not running past guys like
he used to. I don't remember him running past guys,
but he's essentially alignment. Now. Is this just another case

(23:21):
of Bill Belichick knows when guys are done, they're done. Yeah,
I mean it's it's he When you watch those I
don't have any you know, I feel a lot better
about Tom Brady watching that tape and seeing three drop
touchdown passes. He could have had a huge game in there. Um,
they did not play great around him at the receiver position.
Then he turned around. You watched Cronk. He cannot run,
He can't get out of a break, He can't get

(23:42):
away from anybody. And when he was younger, he really
could run. I mean he was. It looks kind of
clunky because he's just so big and he's like six
seven or you know whatever. He is two urn seventy
pounds and he's just kind of a it's kind of
a goofy look. But he was covering ground. He's not
covering any ground now, Doug, and he cannot get his
foot in the ground and get out of any type
of break. So um, he Yeah, he looks broken down.

(24:05):
I mean, this is what it looks like when you
watch him on tape. He looks old and broken down.
Is h Drew Brees arm shot. My issue with Drew
is not the arm because I think for a couple
of years now he's not been able to really really
stressed the defense down the field. Uh. To me, it's
when he starts missing some of the underneath stuff that
I've never seen him miss um. You know a couple

(24:26):
of times where he had he had time, he had
a clean pocket, He's got a you know, ten yard crosser.
I mean that things on the upfield shoulder. You know,
I've never seen it not on the upfield shoulder much
less than complete. And now you're you saw some bad
misses in that game. So that's that's what worried me.
It's not you know, the field's gonna shrink and he
can't push the ball down the field. He's been able
to win a lot of half court basketball games for

(24:47):
the last fifteen years. Uh, you start missing those though,
you've got a problem. Yeah, it's Chris Sims are the
exact same thing. It's it's kind of like when it
ended for Jason Kidd, right, Like, you know, he wasn't
the same guy in the old court he used to be.
But now a sudden, you can't make layups and drives
and you just can't buy a bucket. It just when
it goes, when it goes, it goes. Uh. It's it

(25:08):
feels like it's been a slow decline, but maybe it's
just been made more obvious because we're paying attention to it. Yeah,
I mean I think he didn't play great last year.
You remember he had his Bucky brought up on our
podcast of the day. He had you know what a
five weeks at what five weeks refresher? There was thumb
I think that he had last year. Um, that allowed
him trying freshen up towards the end of the year.

(25:30):
You know, this is week two, man, so she managed
to see where hit what he looks like when we
get the week you know, nine, ten, eleven, twelve. Yeah, no,
I'm I'm I'm with you. That's last year might have
been like his Peyton Manning matter. Peyton Manning got injured
and then suddenly came back for the playoffs and found
a way to ride that defense to his his last
Super Bowl win. Um, all right, now we're two weeks

(25:53):
into Aaron Rodgers playing elite football. Is the talent around
him better than we odd? Is Aaron Rodgers not as
washed up as some people thought? Like? What what has
changed in Green Bay? Man? I'll tell you what. He
looks clean, I mean just clean. Everything is crisp with
his feet, with the way the ball is coming out.
They've got a run game going now, Um, I mean

(26:16):
they're they're averaging we looked this up to the day.
They're averaging six point one yards that carry when they're
under center. So when once you get to that point
in time, now you get under center. Now you can
work air and off play action off that, and he's again,
I just keep coming back to the fact he looks great,
he's in great shape, and everything is crisp, and the
ball is jumping out of his hand. So, um, I

(26:36):
don't think this has as much to do with what's
around him as just Aaron Rodgers is fully dialed in
right now, I would I tend to agree with you. Um.
I look at Jimmy Garoppolo, he's hurt. But it seems
like there has to be some growing frustration up there now. Well,
I think we've seen that in all the Shanahan press
conferences over the last couple of years that there's definitely

(26:58):
frustration that they've left as and yards out of the field,
um toe to some missus at the quarterback position. So
you know, they found a way to win a lot
of games, and Darnier won a championship with it, but
I think there has been some underlying frustration there that
they haven't, you know, gotten more. He's man they're they're
so good with you know, go back to being an
under center obviously, that's what they do a lot. And uh,

(27:19):
their their their play design and and game plan week
to week is it's fun to watch, man because they
just get dudes wide open. What changed with Dak Prescott
after they got down so big? Oh man, he was
he was really good man. That what they did is
they found matchups. They found a way and you'll see it,
Doug haven't watched a ton of Charger games in that

(27:41):
same defense that guts runs, that Pete runs, um. You
saw it with Seattle. I talked about getting Jamal Adams
isolated on Julian Edelman. In that defense, you you're going
to have linebackers and safeties that when they get in
some of these three by one formations, you're gonna have
to cover the inside receiver. And what they did is
they found used to get Seedee Lamb on linebackers. They

(28:02):
got him on on Dion Jones, and then they were
able to spread the field and they were able to
get Marie Cooper isolated on Kian O'Neil. I mean, they
just found matchups that worked in their favor. And Doc
was he was very aggressive and attacking those when he
had him. Russell Wilson the best guy playing right now.
I don't think anybody's playing better than him. And he's

(28:23):
he's so good man, and it's, uh, it's it's it's
fun to watch. I'm just glad. I know everybody's the
way they always say, like, let Russ Cooker, what have you,
kind of laugh, But that's that's what they're doing. They're
finally saying he used to be in case of emergency,
brake Glass Russ, and now and now it's just go
get him, go get him from the first quarter on
and and it's explosive, it really is. DJ great stuff,

(28:46):
great job calling the game. Look forward to the next.
Move the sticks and we appreciate you join us. Appreciate you.
All right, that's a Daniel Jeremiah of the NFL Networks
moved the sticks and of course calling Charger games on
our sister station in Laws Ange List. Bad news for
that was you didn't Yeah yeah, mhm. Coming up next,

(29:07):
we'll get to uh, we'll get to what the Fox
said and uh and then Matt Chatham will join us.

(29:30):
your portion of previous show on Fox Sports Radio or
Fox Sports One. We call it What the Fox Say.
This is Calling Cowherd, host of the Hurt Fox Sports
Radio and FS one, on the Giants and the Jets
and whether or not they should move off of their
young quarterbacks. You don't know if you have the right quarterback.
My guess is right now in the NFL, the Jets
don't look look at their schedule. The Jets don't look

(29:50):
like they got two wins on this schedule right now,
and the Giants may be worse. At minimum, these teams
have the top two or three draft picks. From what
I've seen through the weeks one and two, these are
horrible football teams. Let me ask you, Trevor Lawrence is available,
would you bail on Daniel Jones right now? Would you

(30:11):
bail on Sam Donald? Because Trevor Lawrence is the best
quarterback prospects since Andrew Luck. That doesn't mean he's going
to be as good as Lamar Jackson, but as a prospect.
He's better as a prospect. So even if you have
a quarterback that you like Sam Donald, and I think
in the building they like Sam Donald, he's not that
and he's not winning games, not with this coaching staff.

(30:34):
So it's funny. I thought this morning, what would I do?
I would move off Daniel Jones. Well, there's a couple
of things. Dan Jones in his second year. He has
not started sixteen games, and he's not dealing with a
full complement of players, and he's Look, he's shown the
ability to make plays in the NFL. He's also shown

(30:55):
himself to be turnover pro, which, by the way, I
don't know if you remember Andrew Luck was very turned
of a prone early in his career, especially fumbling the football.
Troy had been famously through a ton of interceptions. But
I do think that Colin is missing this point. Look,
if Trevor Lawrence is going to prove to be Aaron

(31:16):
Rodgers or Ben Roethlisberger or whomever, it's really hard to
say you would pass on that. On the other hand,
what we've seen in the NFL as the teams with
the most overall talent are the ones that are the
most competitive right, and you have two teams and the

(31:38):
Giants and the Jets, which just don't have the personnel
of everybody else. Now, the Giants just aren't there yet,
in addition to the fact that we don't know of
Daniel Jones. Is that dude, But you're not gonna get
a fair sense of it until they have like a
legit defense, legit weapons to throw too. They've rebuilt the
offensive line and now he's dealing without Sae Kwon. Barkley

(31:59):
will be back, and maybe this helps them in terms
of their ultimate negotiation with Sacon Barkley in terms of
his next contract. But I just you know, you're better
off trading the number one overall pick than keeping it.
You know, I don't think you trade Daniel Jones because
at least you be the value of the number one

(32:20):
pick is much greater than that of Daniel Jones. It
just is because the it's it's the opposite of real life.
In real life, we fear the unknown in football life.
For in sports lives, we actually undervalue the known and
we look forward to the unknown. That's why the backup

(32:42):
quarterback in college football is the most popular guy on campus,
the second the starters that You're like, well, we got
this recruit, this kid who I heard five star, you know,
tearing up in practice, like you don't know he was
really that good, he'd be starting. So I just I
don't I agree with Colin on those teams stink. Feels

(33:03):
like the Jets won't play for gae. It just feels
like those guys like no and and they stink. You know,
for a team that doesn't have talent, they have to
play harder than everybody else, and they're not. The Jags
don't have great talent, but they are rallying around the coaches,
the organization, the quarterback and their opportunity to make plays.

(33:26):
The Jags team is not not bad. The Jets aren't.
Jets are one of the least talented teams in the NFL,
and they're not playing up even to their talent. Outside
of you know, McKay Backton throwing dudes around. He got
a chance to be special. I still like, you mean,
still see glimpses of Sam Donald if they don't ruin
him between now and then. But I would not I

(33:50):
would not move off of these quarterbacks, especially I mean
Dan Jones during the second year, Like, what were we
doing here? That's what the Fox said. Yes, music, do
you think this is the perhaps recency bias and overreaction
to well, look at the Cardinals. They were quick to
move off at Josh Rosen and it clearly worked out
for them and Kyler Murray. Do you think a lot

(34:13):
of teams will actually follow suit and and try and
replicate that or is this just fodder for sports talk hosts.
It just depends on how people in the building feel
about the guy. The problem, the problem with um with

(34:34):
Josh Rosen was really really simple. The problem with Josh Rosen,
It's really really simple. Nobody liked him. Like I told
you this before he was drafted. Nobody liked him that
if you went back to St. John Boscar, like, what

(34:54):
do you think, Like, man, he was really talented, He's
really really he's a good quarterback. You go to UC like, man,
he's really really talented. Yeah, but you ask anybody else
about their quarterback, Lamar Jackson, Deshaun Watson, Baker Me, I
mean Deshaun Watson's college coaches like that's Michael Jordan's you know,

(35:15):
you ask oh, you guys about Baker Mayfer, Like, man,
I love that guy. Yeah, I'll go to war for him,
Like you know, you need to eat, do some dumb stuff,
but I'll go to war for him. I would lay
down on train tracks for that guy. That's what a
quarterback does. That's like the garn Minshew thing like MN shows. Okay,
but he gets the ball to the open. Dude and
guys just like him. That's like half the battle. It

(35:38):
really is a little bit of its popularity contest, a
likability contest, so that that I think is more representative. Um,
is this Cam Newton stuff? How long will it last? Why?
