(00:27):
Leap Show Fox Sports Radio. Calvin Watkins gonna join us
this hour. He's an insider for the Dallas Cowboys. How
bad are the injury problems and why the dysfunction of
the defense. You will find out getting you ready for
a football Friday with our football picks, and they annimix
in some college picks this week. Boys, I don't know.
I mean I haven't done the college picks yet, and
(00:47):
the reason is like we just didn't have enough data.
Now you get some data and you're like, okay, I
mean I really want to wait till the Pack twelve
and the Big tenor back going for all my college picks,
but starting to feel a little something. Um, I had
the Bears yesterday? Did I not? I thought did? Well?
That's right. I was doing a different show, I said
I like the Bears, um And, and my my logic
(01:09):
behind it was, you know, look that that pass rushes outstanding,
the defense is really good, and they were playing at home,
and there's a certain amount of sloppiness with with um
with with with Tampa. You know, it is funny, it's
it's one of those things I don't I don't believe
(01:29):
that if you I don't believe that if you don't
like the path that our country is on, you should
go live elsewhere. Okay, So please don't take it as
God should move out of this country. Like, no, No,
that's not actually how it works. How it works is
like if you don't like what we're doing or what
somebody's doing, you bring it to our attension, and either
(01:51):
there's a change made or a vote made, or you
run for office yourself or support somebody who decides to
make a change. Right. You, you're you're more than okay
bringing up things you don't like. Right. But but I
would encourage people to spend some time outside this country. Right.
(02:12):
My one of my first months doing this show for Fox,
I was in in Israel. As you guys know, we
did ten shows from Israel's coaching a team in the
Maccabi Games. It's like the Jewish Olympics. It was a
great honor and it was a lot of fun. And
I every day we'd get up we had practice at
(02:33):
seven in the morning, seven until thirty at a gym
which was ten minutes from our hotel Max right, and
we would get on the bus and they would hand
us these gigantic things of water granted their room temperature
at seven in the morning, and like that was your
water to keep with you, because guys can get dehydrated
so hot in Israel in the summer. And we'd be
(02:57):
sitting there, you know, I always rode first seat. I
did the head coach thing. Head coached its first seat.
I would always be sitting in the first seat, and
you know, when I look at my watch and it
was time to go, we go. If somebody was in
the bus, they'd have to take cab to get there,
you know, like I had to do kind of the
head coaching thing. But I always I tell people all
the time, like, what what was it like? Well, if
you've been to Israel, like, no, Israel is a magnificent country.
(03:21):
It has beauty. It's the land of milk and honey.
The people are nice. The food is exquisite, right that
the history is and you have the basically the birthplace
of the three most powerful religions in the world, all
right next to each other. But Israel is it's never easy,
(03:43):
Like it's just not easy. You'd get on the bus
and you know, the bus drivers, if they were there
on time, they were always arguing with another bus driver.
Like everything is just brought to an argument and they
mica away might like they're using their hands and I
would I tell them turn my guys on my team,
and like, all right, we can start today. There's been
an argument, right, and like so Israel's incredible, incredible, but
(04:10):
it's still Israel, you know, like it's still kind of
crazy expensive. You know, anybody's been in a like a
basketball arena, even the nicest, but they're they're not the
nice as nice as ours. It's a democracy, it's not
as well run as ours. New buildings aren't aren't as
as slick as ours. You know, houses they're like does
(04:31):
a modern farmhouse like we do here, Like you don't
have the space you have in America. Again, America is
far from perfect. It's got a long way to go,
but I've lived outside this country three different times. And
I can tell you there's no place like it that
I in, no place I would rather live. And there
are other redeeming qualities to the I think fifteen sixteen
(04:53):
other countries I've been to that I liked, but I
love living here. We're just spoiled. We are spoiled. We're
spoiler how good we have it. My kids are spoiled.
How good they have it. Your kids are probably spoiled,
how good they have it? And I think Tom Brady
has been spoiled. Last night, Tom Brady made a gaff.
(05:15):
He didn't know what down it was. It happens. It happens,
you know, even and people was a huge scoreboard. There's
no crowd, crowd noise like you might have taken it
for granted. He might have been counting in his head.
He might have thought of that that second down completion
got them to a first down. I don't know, he
just got that. He's screwed up. Here's Tom Brady after
the game, when he was asked if he knew it
(05:36):
was fourth down. We just you're up against the clock
and you're up against the Yeah, you know, I knew
we had again at chunk so I should have been
thinking more first down instead of mm hmmm, um, we're
up against the clock. That that is, no, I did
(05:57):
not know. I honestly like, had he simply said I
screwed up, right, he simply said I screwed up then,
and you know you people would have crushed him. But
at least it would have been an honest human moment.
But I don't know if that had that never happened
in New England, and it probably never would happen in
(06:17):
England because you'd have a lot of guys yelling out,
four down, we gotta get something. Here's fourth down. Tommy
knows fourth down, right, you do know what's fourth down.
And you look at the number of penalties that are
that are committed, eleven of them. They lead the league
in penalties. By the end of next week they will.
And by the way, the Patriots committed eleven penalties all
(06:39):
season long, even though they played four games. Tampa committed
eleven penalties last night. The Patriots committed eleven penalties all
season long. He was spoiled. He forgot, how like discipline
is really really hard sometimes to live under, but there's
a reason that it helps you be successful as a
human being and it helps you be successful as a
(07:01):
football team. All right, more on the on the on
the Buccaneers in a moment. First let's get to Calvin
Watkins Cowboys inside for the Dallas Morning News. Um, so
Tyrn Smith is out for the year. No, Lyle Collins,
you lose your starting center. How bad is that? That
makeshift offensive line? It's pretty bad. Um. You know they're
(07:21):
gonna have a couple of rookies starting that tackle and
Branded Night and Terence uh Steele and the last time
Tarence Steeles at left tackle. Myles Garrett has had a
field day. So they go have some issues down the line,
but they should be okay against the Giants. But for
right now, it's it's it's it's they got problems. But
(07:41):
like they like I said a couple of people earlier today, Um,
you got some time to fix it. So hopefully these
young kids can get their act together. Yeah. No, I
mean they have some time to fix it. What about
the defense? How do they go about fixing that? Uh? Yeah,
you need to need to draft number one. Uh. You know,
they just don't have the personnel, you know, Um, one
(08:03):
of the best pass rushers to Marcus Lawance, you gotta
busted me, and he's playing on one leg. Jalen Smith
is what he is. He's average guy, a little bit
above average players. Um, they just don't have the talent level.
You know. They had a chance to get Jamal Adams,
they didn't do that. They had a chance to get
All Thomas, they didn't do that. Um, they have a
young kid at corner and Treyvon Big you got in
(08:25):
the second round. You know, he got to make some
players from the ball being a young kid. They just
they just don't have the personnel man to keep up. Yeah,
I think that's fair, But I also think that some
of it, at least what what people are watching the
All twenty to tell you, it's about effort. Why the
lack of buying to Mike Nolan's system, that that the
guys won't give the optim effort. One of the players
(08:48):
are saying, the previous system was attacked, the previous defensive
system attack. This system seems to be more of let's
read what they're doing, then let's attack. And the players
are still trying to make that adjustment. Um, now they've
asked the Marcus lines and Algan Smith and Edgerson Griffin
the outside pass rushers to blitz standing up, and some
(09:11):
of those players have said, well, we're not comfortable doing that.
So they told DeMarcus Longs to you don't put your
hand down in the dirt if they like to say
you can rush the pastor that way. So they made
some adjustments. Mike Nolan, the defensive coordinator, you know him,
We've been around a long time. He said, look, the
language is simple. You know, we've simplified it. We were
telling them how you gotta do it, just get it done.
(09:33):
So some of it is the scheme and the buying
and the other part, the major part of it is
the personnel. You know, of course, not to make plays
and you just you just you're just going in surface. Yeah,
I I. Everybody cheered the Cedee Lamb pick, but that
was bringing in Sam to the beach. Right. They already
had offensive personnel. You could have you could have traded
down from that spot, or you could have taken defense
(09:54):
at that spot. You know, it was interesting, I will
surprise that they did they got CD Lamb. But it
goes back to the old things. Do you go with
what your board says, And at that time, Clan was
the highest ranked player on their board. So I mean,
there's a reason why you have all those scouts and
all those personnel people to put the board together, So
(10:15):
you gotta honor it. So that's what they did, knowing
that they they had issues on defense. Uh, Calvin, what
about Doc? I mean he obviously a couple of these
incredible leg comebacks, putting up huge numbers. But the the
m O fordak was forget the numbers. All he does
is win. They didn't win enough last year and they're
not winning. Now. How does it How does it fall
(10:38):
in terms of his reputation, his value to the Cowboys
that with all this production late in games, he's not
actually winning. You know, a lot of people down here
and not really blame with DAC for the issues now.
They don't like the fact that the probably the press
in turnovers and touched has been a part of those problems.
You've got great numbers, but those numbers being nastating because
(10:59):
we're wanting throw, you know, and you passed a second
with the Washington in the division. Um. The problems with
Doc is, you know, he's got to get some wins,
and some of them go out of his control because
you know, you can't want to shoot out every weekend.
That's hard to do unless you're a Rodgers or somebody
or Pat my Home, and I don't think Doc is
(11:20):
at that level you can win to shoot out. However,
he has good enough to win some games and hopefully
this this next stretch would he got three or four
games within the division. Uh prush scot and maybe win
some games for him. But it's gonna be very hard.
They're they're in a bad division, right, that's the one
benefit they have. You have two rebuilding teams and one
team that's really struggling in the Eagles, is at what
(11:43):
point do we get to the maybe Mike McCarthy has
gotta turn gotta get this thing going range. You know,
that's the thing about Mike McCarthy is before the season started,
you know, don't one asked him us the goal for
his team? He said, super Bowl. I mean why you
know that? That's what we're supposed to be. So everyone
was kind of surprised because the previous tast coach, Serp
(12:05):
jar never talked super Bowl. He just said, hey, we're
just trying to win every game, one game at a time.
And mc McCarthy said, you gotta win Super Bowl and
then they get to the opener in l a and
they love to ram and then he goes with a
sense of urgency. So I think Mike McCarthy understands that
he's got a short window here. He's got a five
year contract because you want a super Bowl, but in reality,
(12:27):
I think it's three years, you know, because you understand
that Jerry Jones are gonna give him the veteran players,
they're not gonna rebuild, and he's got to get it
done because they're as a tremendous amount of rush on
him to get this turned around and get them to
where they need to be. How much effect does it
have on McCarthy that Aaron Rodgers is uh one thirteen
(12:48):
games last year and is tearing up the world this year.
That is interesting, isn't it? Huh? You know? Um, But
I would say McCarthy, it's always respected there and Lodgers
and now I think even Hill and hey, you know,
I made some mistakes being Bay and we said that,
uh in the media, and he kind of moved off
on them, my mistakes when I'm in doubt, and I
(13:10):
got Jack Scott, I got out saying young quarterbacks, I'm
gonna go with him. Calvin, great stuff, man, Thanks so
much for joining us. Thanks man, thanks for taking on me.
That's the pleasures all mine. That's Calvin Watkins joining us
on The Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Can
the Texans and Deshaun Watson get their first one of
the season? My red hot NFL picks around the corner.
(13:32):
Be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Easter noon Pacific on
Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio Whap Doug
Gotlip Show Fox Sports Radio three and two. Last week,
we continue to do better than you know, keep making
you money. That's really what it kind of comes down to.
Right When a train hits a vehicle at a railway crossing,
(13:52):
the results are often deadly. Be cautious at the crossing
if the signals are going, don't be tempted to try
and sneak across the tracks even if you don't see
a train stop. Trains can't paid for by NITZA three
and two. Last week twelve nine and one. Overall, let's
get to the picks. I want winners. Twelve week, got
him five, NFL five College It's five for five with
(14:17):
Doug gotli Let's go five Doug Gottlieb Show Fox Sports Trader.
Here's five picks that will make you help you make
money for them. Our favorites, well three our favorites ones
that pick them. Let's start with the Cowboys taking on
the Giants. As you just heard, there without their book
end tackles, without their starting center all for the rest
of the year. Offensive lines in bad shape. Defense has
(14:37):
been a mess, but they're taking on the Giants, and
I guess the Giants are coming out playing in l
A against the Rams team that was either uninspired or
unable to move the football. Giants defense not as bad
as reputational leads you believe they do have. The Cowboys,
you have the third most points per game scored on offense.
Granted a lot of those incomebacks. The Cowboys might have
a bad defense, but the Giants have only scored three
(14:59):
offensive touched downs all season. Danny Dimes has a tendency
to turn it over. Cowboys are gonna win by more
than eight and a half points. Give me the Cowboys.
Team that beat the Cowboys last weekends Cleveland Browns Now.
The Browns a struggled to have consistent success and deal
with success well. Um. They're leading the league in rushing
Baker Mayfield over last two weeks four touchdowns known receptions,
(15:22):
and they've won three in a row, averaging thirty nine
points a game. The Colts defense is legit, but they're
all pro. Linebacker Darius Leonard not playing didn't make the trip. Um,
and I thought the Colts outplayed the Bears last week.
I don't see them out playing the Browns for a
second consecutive week. Cole's defense is fast. I don't know
(15:43):
how to deal with the physicality of the Browns. I
think the Browns win in a pickup. I've been on
to Shaun Watson over not playing all that well, but
this is one of those the while the Cats away,
the mice shall play. Bill O'Brien gets fired. He was
there often a coordinator and their head coach. Now of
a sudden that the kids get a chance to run
(16:05):
the run to candy store, and I think it's uniting factor.
Jaguars aren't that good, Deshaun Watson? Is that good Jaguars
that the Titans win by more than five and a
half points. Lamar Jackson's dealing a little bit of a
knee injury, missed two two days of practice. Um. They
(16:26):
were good, not great against the Washington football team last
week that did barely cover a thirteen and a half
points spread. The Bengals are three and one against the
spread this season. Joe Burrows coming off his first win
of his career, and they have a lot of options.
Plus the way in which they're playing spread, you out
get rid of it quick. That's the way the Kansas
(16:46):
City Chiefs play. Now. I'm not saying he's Pat Mahomes,
but I am saying that it'll, it'll, it'll. They'll be
better against that nasty pass rush, the quicker they get
rid of it. And with their style of offense, I
think style, and I think the Bengals have some substance.
I think they'll keep this thing relatively close to the
Ravens a win, but not by more than thirteen points.
(17:07):
Steelers have the number three ranked overall defense and they're
taken on the injury riddle Eagles team that's ranked thirty
one on offense, and they're one in three against the spread.
Eagles just have massive problems and the Steelers are now
one of them. Steelers win by more than a touchdown
given the Cowboys, the Browns, the Texans, the Bengals, the Steelers.
Those are my picks. There It is five NFL Let's
(17:32):
five College five for five with Doug gottlie Be sure
to catch the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show
weekdays at three p m. Easter noon Pacific Doug Gotlip Show,
Fox Sports Radio. She is Mary Kay Cabot for Cleveland
dot Com. She joins us in the Doug got Lip
Show on Fox Sports Radio. UM three and one as
(17:53):
opposed to the usual one in three in Cleveland. What's
it like in uh in Berea around the facility? Well,
things are really starting to heat up around here. If
they can go out and beat the Polts on Sunday,
that actually puts them at four and one for the
first time since nineteen four. When I mentioned that to
(18:16):
Miles Garrett today, he wasn't even born then. Uh So,
this would be huge if they could run it up
to four in one right now, Oh, no question about it. Um,
how are the wide receivers? I mean, I guess getting
the ball to O. B J in the reverse and
getting them, but but they're gonna get the volume of
catches are going to get is less than normal, with
all the with all the running of the football. How
(18:36):
are they handling that? Well, they seem to be handling
it well. I think the good thing that Kevin Stefanski
is doing is that he's recognizing that he has to
get his stars involved. I mean, you really just don't
want to have an O. B J on the team
and not have him be happy, not have him feeling valued. Uh.
So he's you know, he's doing whatever it takes. He's
(18:57):
taking note into his own hands, putting it into those
of others. Having Jarvis Landry throw a thirty seven yard
touchdown past him, having running have him running reverses. So uh,
he's being very creative with it and it's been effective.
Mary Kay Cabot joining us here on the Dug out
Lip Show on Fox Sports Radio. You had a two
headed monster running back, now a one headed monster. What
(19:20):
adjustments for the injuries do you see being made? Well,
you know how many teams when you lose the guy
who almost won the rushing yardage title last year, you
can plug right in the guy who actually did win
it in So uh, they really had the luxury of
having just two premier running backs Uh, you know, I
think that Kareem is ready to really carry the load,
(19:42):
run through a wall. Uh. He's going to be at
home for this kind of first start where he's going
to be relied upon in front of his hometown fans.
It means so much to him to be here, and
I think he's just ready to break out and shine.
What about Baker Mayfield? Um, you know that there's the
big question with this team I think is not not
(20:02):
can they be successful? Can they handle success? What is
Baker legitimately like this year? Well, you know what, Baker
is coming up the learning curve and I think as
each week has gone by, he's gotten better and better,
more comfortable in this new offense. But in the meantime,
while they're sort of waiting for him for the lights
to come on here a little bit. Uh, they have
(20:24):
really relied on the run and they've done everything that
they can to just win games. They've they've gotten a
ton of turnovers. That's been huge. So I think he
will get better week by week. Uh, you know, once
he plays faster. But for right now there you know,
I don't want to say they're working around it, but
they're they're working with it. What's that. What do you
(20:45):
mean by that? I mean that, you know, again, they're
just they're running the ball like crazy, not putting it
in his hands all the time. He only had even
though they scored forty nine points in that game in Dallas,
he only had I think I had it sting yards.
So it's not huge. I mean, Odell, even though he
had this breakout game in Dallas, he's only averaging four
(21:08):
receptions and sixty yards a game. That's all usual Odell numbers.
But again, they're finding a way to do it as
creatively as they can. Mary Kayaba joining us in the
Doug Gottlieb Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, it just
it to the outside and it feels different. It feels
(21:28):
I'm like, a much more professional group. But maybe it's
maybe it's just again we're nitpicking things. But is that
what it feels like to cover on a daily basis? Yes,
I think so. It really does feel like everybody is
sort of aligned together. I mean, you don't have the
in fighting last year. It really was. It was dysfunctional,
(21:48):
and by this time you knew it. You knew that
the coaching staff they weren't all on the same page.
You just knew that there was trouble in Paradise. It
just didn't feel right. Uh, you know it seems like that,
you know, the quarterbacks were over there, the receivers were
over there. Kevin Stefanski has done a great job of
bringing everyone together, getting everyone going in the same direction,
(22:12):
and I think it's showing up on the field. Yeah,
I tend to agree with you. Mary Kay, great stuff.
Thanks for joining us, and we appreciate your contributing into
Fox Sports Radio. Sure, thanks for having me. That's Mary
Kay Cabot does a fantastic job Cleveland playing deether. Cleveland
dot com is the online website she joined us here
on the Doug Gotlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. You know,
it's it's just, you know, like coaching doesn't matter. That's
(22:34):
that's really kind of what we started with in terms
of talking about Brady and the difference. And doesn't mean
that Bruce arians is not a creative mind and not
a fun guy to play for, But coaching and discipline
do matter. You know. It's like it's it's no different
than when you're raising children. They're gonna fight you on everything,
but every once in a while you have to use
(22:56):
some discipline. Otherwise they you know, they actually kid actually
crave discipline, they crave a little bit of structure, and
adults are the same. What are you doing today? I
don't know, Like, have you ever you ever met somebody
who's worked their whole life and then they get retired
and they have nobody telling them what to do a
lot of times, guys, just you know, I remember my grandpa.
He retired earling you're at least really successful as an accountant.
(23:18):
Then he became a car dealer. They retired really early.
You know, he's like maybe not even sixty, but he
was fully healthy and find you know, selling cars and
loved it. And he's just like, I'm gonna retire. And
you go over to his house at like eleven o'clock
and he being his boxer shorts and a T shirt.
I just got up like I got nothing to do.
What do you mean he had nothing to do? This
is the guy that used to get up at the
crack of dawn every single day and worked till worked
(23:40):
till it was it was not almost midnight, and he
loved it. It doesn't mean you have to have that
excessive kind of compulsive always on time, but the structure
is what people crave, and I think that's what you
got in Cleveland. We just we do this in professional
sports all the time. It's not just the NFL. We
do it basketball. It's like, have you ever heard anybody
(24:03):
going like, you know, he's had a really good job
this year. Frank Vogel done a great job. I always
got Lebron, he's got Okay, Lebron is not easy to coach.
Anthony Davis has never won anything, and then he's got
like Dwight Howard. You know, he's got Rondo's hard, he's
got JaVale McGee, Contavious Color. But you watch the Lakers
and they play hard. Now, is some of that? A
(24:24):
lot of that Lebron? Okay, he gets credit, But the
head coach he gets some credit as well for allowing
for champion, championing Lebron and getting Lebron to play hard
and do what he wants and put together a staff
and have that staff worked together. But we we do
this thing in professional sports where when a team loses,
it's about the coach. When a team wins, it's about
(24:46):
the players. Now, when they lose, it's about everybody. When
they win, it's about everybody. You know, like, like, the
genius to Cam Newton is not that he got to play,
It's that he got to play with Josh Van Daniels
and Bill Belichick. That's the genius to it, because you
know that while it may not be a perfect fit
in terms of their personnelity may not have the best players,
(25:08):
the Patriots basically look at their roster, look at their team,
look at the other team, and what is the what
can we do to win next week? And even in
the two games they've lost, they've been very close to
winning against teams that on paper, I think everyone would
contend has better talent than they have. So, you know,
(25:30):
I think that the Cleveland and the New England deal
in comparison to um um, the deal in you know,
in comparison to last year in Cleveland is night and day,
and Tampa in the comparison to New England, it's night
and day. And I think coaching matters. And I'm not
(25:52):
sitting here telling you can't do it without any players.
You know, Jacksonville I think is really well coached. They
have great chemistry as a football team. They're just not
talented enough. But you know, I'm sure that Tom Brady
was thinking himself. How good did I have it the
last bunch of years? You know, I had Dante's Karneck yeh,
Josh McDaniels, I had Bill Belichick. I had a roster
of guys that that understood, that got it, that had
(26:14):
been there but through the wars before, and I don't
have that now. You know. It's like we do this
in basketball, where we always think the most talented team wins.
It's not always the case. You know, Shaq and Kobe
didn't win until they had phil Jackson. Lebron, I mean
Jordan didn't win too. We had Philip Jackson. You know,
Lebron Spoilster was very very young and was good but young,
(26:37):
but he also had pat Riley kind of overseeing things.
Like there's a reason Golden State got so much better
when Mark Jackson left. He's not a bad coach, but
he did not necessarily a fit for twenty one century
basketball and for this, for this this team. And once
she had combined great coaching, guys coming of age and
the style that benefits everybody, they just took off. Come
(27:01):
up next, Lebron James is playing a game five tonight.
I think it's gonna be the last NBA game for
four or five months, but he's also facing off against
the president of the United States. I'll tell you how,
But first a word from Farmers. Fox Sports Radio has

(27:21):
within the I Heart Radio app search f s R
to listen live. What's it gonna be like tonight the
Lakers win a championship? Ramos, It would be exciting for me,
It'll be exciting, But like, is it how would feel
to all of us? I guess is my question? Uh,
it'll feel great. I'm speaking for myself. It'll be wonderful
because the Lakers. This will be ten years since they've
(27:44):
been there, and as a Laker fan, it will be wonderful. Now,
I've been reading a lot of things about, you know,
how they're gonna won't be a parade and all that
type of stuff is that will be virtual type stuff,
So that's kind of that sucks. But overall for me personally,
I'm excited to see all the people that counted them
out at the beginning of this whole thing, gave the championship.
(28:04):
Who counted them all? People? People? Ryan music old on
Ryan Music. Did anybody count the Lakers out? Uh? Well,
I wouldn't say it's like everybody did, but I mean
there was a quick about face from your good buddy
Colin Cowherd who had them getting upset by the Trailblazers. Um.
And then what Ramas is referring to is more so
(28:27):
locally here in l A. There was a very long,
season long campaign about how the Clippers l A may
becoming a Clipper town and how much more talented the
Clippers are and things like that. Is I think it's
what Ramas is specifically referring to. M hmm, Okay, I
mean what do I do I think? Do I think
(28:48):
they are haters out there? Yes, but nobody said they
have no chance that counting them out would be or
the no one believed in them. Plenty of people believe
there were the number one seed in the West. Plenty
of people believed in them. I do think recency bias
in terms of because the Clippers have lost and we've
all been so focused on the NFL season has sort
of taken away from the fact that up until about
(29:10):
mid August, mid August and going all the way back
to October, um of a year ago, it was pretty much, Hey,
the Clippers are this awesome team, and you know, the
Lakers may be lucky to sort of. And at the
end of the at the end, before the law, before
the the quarantine, before quarantine, they beat the Bucks and
(29:31):
they beat the Clippers, and we were talking about they
may be the best team in the NBA, weren't we. Well,
we were here on the Duck Gottlieb Show, but I
think a lot of people were still extending the whole
Clippers just need a little bit more time. But but
people thought it'd be the Clippers and the Lakers in
the Western Conference finals. Did nobody said like they got
no chance? I would agree. I don't know if that's
exactly what Ramos was referring to. Nobody people count them out. Um,
(29:56):
let's get to the press, the press, the entire dan.
Do you think people have counted out the Lakers? No? No,
You have to understand John gets a little sensitive when
it comes to his teams. When I mentioned the Braves
had shut out four of their five opponents, John said
to me, well, the Reds only hit two ten so
so so he likes to defend his teams. With the
(30:17):
Dodgers and with the Lakers. So maybe maybe that's why
do we count all these playoff games so far as
regular playoffs stats, well, the divisional series, I think so,
because that would have been normal anyway, So these best
of five would have been normally five. Yeah. Yeah, Well,
(30:38):
speaking about the Lakers, Uh, there's one guy who's not
a Laker fan. He resides in the White House. President
Trump today on the Rush Limbaugh Show, both of US
a division of Premier Networks, speaking today about the NBA season, which,
as you said, could come to an end tonight, has
become so political that nobody cares about it anymore. Why
(31:00):
people watch? I don't know if anybody that's I don't
even know who's playing in the finals. I don't know
anybody that's watching the NBA. Lebron has been a spokesman.
I don't know him. I never met him. All I
know is when he endorsed Hillary, I said, that's the
greatest endorsement I've ever seen. Because when he endorsed Hillary
four years ago, she came up to his knee. I said,
(31:22):
that is not the best looking president. I thought that
was the greatest. There was standing to his knee. They
were standing now, she was up to about his knee.
I mean literally, I've never seen anything, and I said,
that's not good. But Lebron is a spokesman for the
for for the Democratic Party. It's it's a very very
(31:43):
nasty spokesman. That was the President's also said Lebron's the hater. Oh,
I definitely think he's a hater. You know, I don't
think there's anybody of the president, but I don't she
can come up to his knee. It's very small. I
love what he says. Nasty. He dropped an f mom
(32:04):
on rush. Did you see that Lebron about Iran? He
dropped it. Yeah, yeah, yes, I don't have that one
in the system. Was a little delayed because I wanted
to uh to get that part in. Uh So that
was the president. Kristops for Zingus. By the way, the
MAVs went knee surgery today. Injured the knee in mid
(32:26):
August in their playoff series against the Clippers. No timetable
for his return. Some more injury news in the National
Football League. Jimy Garoppolo gonna start dug at quarterbacks Sunday
for the Niners against the Dolphins, returning from his high
ankle sprain. Um, I think box. You know, the best
thing that happened to Jimmy Garoppolo was Nick Mullins was
terrible last week, just terrible, and for for so long
(32:50):
people said, you know what, anybody can play well in
that system. They're starting to get healthier. They won't be
ever as healthy as they should be without Nick Bosa.
But I do think the Niners that is the best
division in football. I believe the NFL sent a memo
to teams today warning teams that coaches or personnel could
face a fifteen yard penalty if they approach it official
without a mask or face covering, so to argue a
(33:11):
call or question to call, they have to be wearing
their mask or face covering. After the referees union complaining
to the league, do we all, I mean, are we
all okay with do we think Tom Brady blew up
Nick Foles or just there was a no handshake thing
said to him before the game. I think Brady has
done that before as well, where he's just left the field.
I do believe. I know he did shake hands with
(33:32):
Drew Brees after Week one, but I've also seen him
in the past just run off the field. Maybe Foals
just wasn't in that category, right. They are both Super
Bowl champions. They they are. There could be a could
be a bit of a grudge. I have no knowledge
of anything. Jets forced everyone in their facility to go
home today. Player may have tested positive for coronavirus. Presumptive
(33:55):
positive test. Games Studay against the Cardinals is still on.
Cardinals are scheduled to leave pretty much at any moment
to go out east to face the Jets on Sunday.
That's crazy, right, Um, I actually think the Jets not
showing up at the game would have a better outcome
than the Jets showing up at the games. The Patriots
(34:15):
and Titans had no positive test. Patriots can practice tomorrow
if they have no positive test tomorrow, and that is
the plan again, Broncos Patriots, uh, Monday, five o'clock Eastern times,
So the last hour of the show dug on Monday
will have Broncos Patriots going on. So we have no
double header. Now what channels that went on? Um? I
(34:37):
believe that's gonna be an ESPN game as well, So
that is going to do. Yeah, But you know, Patriots
Chiefs was such a big game for CBS last week
that they wanted to. They wanted to have that contest
as theirs. Moving on in the National Football League, Ravens
quarterback Lamar Jackson back at practice today. He'll arts Sunday
(35:00):
against the Bengals. Not as good news for Julio Jones,
Falcons wide receiver questionable after missing practice all week with
a strained hamstring. Atlanta's got the Panthers coming up on Sunday.
Panther has kind of been a sneaky surprise the league
that nobody's talking about right, Yes, should have been the Raiders.
Week one of the season, did beat the Chargers in
the road, and they got another big win last week.
(35:21):
Like you pretty good? Yeah? Yeah? Game five to night
American League Divisional Series Yankees and raised at seven ten
Eastern time winner gets the Astros and the a LCS
starting on Sunday. I mean, everybody's cheering for the Yankees
right we went to It's quite a change. It is weird, Yes,
(35:44):
it is weird. I do think this Yankees team is
a little different though than the ones that maybe we
hated in the nineties and the two thousands. They're not
that good. No, just a even a couple of years
ago when they were like when Judge was a rookie,
they were I here to say likable, but I don't
think that there was as much disdain as there were
(36:04):
for all those championship teams. Finally, Dog, the French Open
final is set. Rafael Nadal, the second seed, will face
off against top seed Novak Djokovic on Sunday. Nadal is
twelve and oh and French Open finals with a winning
ty Roger Federer for the most all time at twenty.
Djokovic looking for his eighteenth Grand Slam crown. If he
(36:25):
can beat Nidal on Sunday, he's going for his second
French Open title. Well, that'd be big for Djokovic. I mean,
Nadal owns the clay court obviously that his second one
would be. I mean I I think if Djokovic wins
and beats Nadal on clay, I think Djokovic could then
take the easily take the crown as the the greatest
(36:45):
player currently. And he started to have the conversation, how
many clay court champions championships to Federer, has do he
won the French Yes he has, he's got one. Yes,
I mean you win too. I mean, it's not gonna
get to Nadal's en seventeen, Federer, Nadal and Djokovic for
it's amazing, how how good? I remember when people like, yeah,
any Murray's in that group, Like, no, any Mury's done
(37:06):
that group, get out there and pressed. That was the press. Uh,
we got a big weekend in sports. Um buy or
how are you going to feel if the Lakers wouldn
NBA Championship tonight? I really don't care. Yeah, I kind
of think that's a lot of people think. I think
Lebron goes off, and I think the Lakers in the championship.
We talked about it Monday Stug Gottling Show, Fox Sports
Radio
