(00:21):
You're listening to Fox Sports Radio Boom. Here we are
on a Tuesday as sitting in for Doug. So you
get a double dose youah Me and Bucky coming at you.
Looking ahead to week seventeen in the National Football League,
also looking back at what transpired in weeks sixteen, specifically
what happened in Foxborough last night as the Buffalo Bills
(00:44):
continue to roll now twalve and three on the season,
as they dismantled the New England Patriots thirty eight to nine.
We dive into that and so much more. You can
get Bucky on Twitter at Bucky Brooks. I'm at Dan
Buyer on Fox and I don't know, Bucky, if it
was anything that we didn't expect the last night, but
to actually see it, I don't know if it was
(01:04):
a changing of the guard, the passing of the torch,
whatever it may be, but I know a conversation throughout
the season for the Bills has been getting over that
hump of winning the a f C East, and they
already did that prior to to winning last night. And
I know they have bigger things on their plate, but
I would have to think that winning last night in Foxboro,
no matter who the Patriots have on the field, no
(01:26):
matter who their quarterback is, I would have to imagine
it was a sweet sweet feeling for the Buffalo Bills
to get out the brooms against their division rival. Absolutely,
because this is a team, the New England Patriots, that
have dominated the division for twenty years, like they've owned
a division, and so in Buffalo this has always been
kind of like the big bad wolf, and so could
(01:46):
you dispatch of the big bad wolf? They want the division,
but it's something different about knocking off the champion, and
so for them to knock him off twice and to
knock him off in their house, and the way in
which they were able to do it, Yeah, I think
if you're the Buffalo Bills, you not only feel good
about where you are this year, but I think you
feel great about where you are going forward in terms
(02:09):
of trying to dominate and own this division again. Twelve
and three a team that's six and two on the road.
I know it's a little different with the COVID nature
of what a road record is. But Buffalo goes to
Foxborough and gets the win. Josh Allen, what a night.
Three and twenty yards, four touchdowns in the victory, and
in the process also broke a team record that was
(02:31):
held by Jim Kelly for the most touchdown passes in
a single season. Josh Allen met with the media last
night and afterwards had this to say about breaking the
record held by Jim Kelly. Sound cliche and like an
unbroken record, but it's it's number twelve. We got one
game left and you know it all that school, the records,
(02:52):
this and that, um, but you know, planning to get
to thirteen three and give ourselves a chance in the playoffs. UM,
it doesn't mean much if we we can get it done,
and we've got our mindset on bigger things and um,
first things. First week seventeen and daltons Man a lot
of cliches. He may have set the record for cliches
in a twenty second sound bite and that one, Bucky
(03:13):
maybe he broke Jim Kelly's right. Jim Kelly usually spit straight,
so but there was there was a lot in that.
But to your point of everything that you know, that
that you said, and what we saw last night, it
is now a much bigger sort of deal for the
Buffalo Bills because it's it's in their lap they I mean,
at twelve and three, they're not going to get the
number one seed. We know that as Kansas City wrapped
(03:35):
that up. But when you go in with an opportunity
to clinch the second seed, get that home playoff game
to home playoff games if you can get past the
first weekend. Uh, this is uh, this is this is
different for a Buffalo Bills team, and they seem to
be taking it all in stride so far. Uh fifteen
games into the season with this great success. Yeah, they
are taking it in stride. And what I really love
(03:57):
about the Buffalo Bills and what I'm really loving about
watch Allen in the way that he's going about his business.
He's just so mature in terms of how they're focused.
They're just so focused on the process. They're so focused
on the next game, They're so focused on getting better
each and every week. That they're just like one. His
level of maturity, his work ethic, um, his leadership ability
(04:21):
all DEAs to be commended. But from a cultural standpoint,
the Buffalo Bills are just a locker room full of
worker bees. They just go to work. And I think
because it comes directly from their head coach, Sean McDermott,
who's also a worker be I just believe that this
team is well positioned to be there and to be
at the top of the f C for a long
time in the a f C s. Where where did
(04:42):
it change for Josh Allen. We we knew the talent,
we knew the arms strength, But when you look at
you look at his rookie season. I'm not a big
touchdown past guy, but it does tell you if you
get your your team in scoring position ten touchdowns, twelve interceptions,
the next season twenty touchdowns, nine picks. Now you add
a forty yards season as opposed to just the three
(05:03):
thousand yards season. Last year, he's got thirty four touchdowns
compared to just nine interceptions. Where did it change for
him now in his third year? I mean, I think
he clicked. I think he clicked um from the middle
of the season last year until this season. I think
he deserves a lot of credit for really working on
his game, working on his flaws, continuing to stretch and
(05:23):
grow as a passer and a playmaker. And I think
Brian day Ball and the offense coordinated Brian day Ball
and then the front office deserves credit for putting the
right pieces around him to help him flourish. Brian dave
Ball has really constructed an offense that is perfect for
Josh allen skill set. When Josh Allen was coming out
of Wyoming, he was a deep ball thrower. He wanted
(05:44):
to push the ball down the field. It was all
about the vertical passing app The Buffalo Bills had been
able to take that part of his game, still utilize it,
but feature more short and intermediate passes. He has helped
them be able to put that in because he's worked
on his accuracy, his ball placement, his decision making, and
so he's been really really good at that and we're
(06:05):
seeing fewer of kind of like those oh no moments
where he would run around and kind of throw the
ball across the field and sometimes we go into the
hands of the other team. He has really been very composed.
He's played um what I would say, with a great
deal of confidence, and I think that confidence has been
infectious as this team has continue to get better and
(06:26):
better and better. I'm still not ready to put him
ahead of Lamar Jackson is the best quarterback in that
fair No, I don't think you can. I think right now,
if if you want to make the case that it's
a push, then I think you can make that case.
But I don't think in good I don't think in
good faith you can say Josh Allen is a better
quarterback than Lamar Jackson. And it's funny because we're having
(06:48):
this debate and I'm looking at their numbers. Josh Allen
has eighty nine total touchdowns. Lamar Jackson has eighty four
total touchdowns. The difference will be in the giveaway. Josh
Allen has a few more giveaways to Lamar Jackson. But
it's okay to say that, Hey, both of these guys
have been good. Both of these guys have exceeded expectations.
(07:10):
Both of these guys are going to be forces to
be reckoned with, and they can do it in their
own unique styles. I think it's just fascinating to see
different quarterbacks with different skill sets and different styles have
success and we can move away from maybe some of
the traditional thinking that we had at a quarterback position. Well,
I always my biggest issue when we compare quarterbacks is
(07:33):
the running quarterback does not get credit for being a
running quarterback because we only think of a quarterback as
the guy who can drop back and pick a part
of defense. We'll we'll maybe give guy a credit for
being able to move around in the pocket, for being
able to escape and scramble, but we will never give
credit for a guy who's able to run the football.
(07:55):
And I just think I think it's so absurd because
it's we're taking a a something that is a strength
and could be looked at as a liability, especially now
in the NFL, and when you look at stationary quarterbacks,
it we'll just take some of the old ones, but
like Ben Roethlisberger, Philip Rivers, and Tom Brady, it is
an issue when it comes to those guys, especially if
(08:16):
they're not getting the football out of It adds a
different dynamic to an offense when you actually have somebody
that can can run with the football. And I and
I hate that we don't look at that and that
it's more held against Lamar Jackson as a negative and
was held against Josh Allen seemingly as a negative in
how they are for quarterbacks. That's always been one of
(08:38):
my issues, Bucky, is it's never looked at as a
strength because of how we perceive and I'm using the
air quotes quarterbacks, but quarterbacks in I just I think
you now have to have that sort of factor when
when being a starting quarterback in the NFL, Dan, if
you don't have that club in your bag, it is
really hard to post a low score on the course.
So all right, if you don't have the athleticism, if
(09:00):
you don't have the ability to run a little bit.
I'm not saying you have to be uh an a
plus runner, but the ability to use your legs to
extend plays, to get first downs, to be utilized a
little bit in the read option game. It is really
really hard to move the football consistently in the National
Football League. And there's a trickle up effect, meaning we've
seen it in high school, we're sending it in college.
(09:21):
We're seeing these teams and coaches take the best athlete
and put him at quarterback. Well, when we get to
the pros, you still want to utilize that athleticism. Now,
the thing that you want to remember is I don't
necessarily want an athlete playing quarterback. I want a quarterback
who is athletic. So I still need him to function
and do all the things that quarterbacks are asked to
do in terms of making the necessary throws and doing
(09:44):
all of those things. But if he can run and
add a dimension to the offense by being mobile and
a playmaker in the run game, it it just changes
the way that the defense has to defend you. And
I think Josh Allen and Lamar Jackson are more alike
than different. When I look at Josh Allen, Josh Allen
has twenty five rushing touchdowns. Lamar Jackson only has nineteen,
(10:06):
And so we begin to put this picture over Lamar
Jackson like he's the only runner at the position and
Josh Allen is running two. I just think they do
it in different ways. And I think there's a there's
a place in our game to be able to appreciate
both of them and to appreciate some of the traditional
(10:27):
guys like the Drew Breeses and the Tom Brady's and
all those guys. But I just believe the way the
game is going and is going to continue to evolve
because the NFL is at the mercy of what college produces.
You're gonna see more Josh Allen's and Lamar Jackson's and
fewer of the Tom Brady types. You know. Lamar Jackson's
numbers are a bit down this season compared to what
(10:50):
they were a year ago, but the touchdowns are down
and a couple of more interceptions than he had a
year ago. But but it's not as far off as
people would think. And then the other point that that
I want to make and sticking up for for Lamar
Jackson and in seeing where he is, because I actually
agree with you. I don't think that Alan has passed.
I think the gap is closed. And I think just
Josh Allen being in the conversation of m v P
(11:12):
is enough to pull even with Lamar, even though Lamar
one of the m v P Award. To be put
in the conversation and to be a guy who's likely
would finish in top three and voting, it's good enough
for me. I mean, you're there, You're in the conversation,
You're that That's totally fine with me. But you see
how the Ravens and Bills go about things and it
is different. And I think that their defenses are different
(11:32):
for how they will, how they want to play, and
how they work in concert with their offense. But maybe
most importantly, and it's still brought up and we saw
the difference this year what Stefon Diggs can do for
Josh Allen. And I know the Ravens are gonna want
to do what the Bills are gonna do. But again
I will say, look at who the Baltimore Ravens have
it wide receiver for Lamar Jackson the throw too. And
(11:56):
I'm not trying to be disrespectful to Willie Sneed or
Hollywood Down or Dez Bryant, but that's the wide receivers
that he has to throw too. And when you just
see what a guy like Stefan Diggs can do for
Josh Allen in Buffalo, I think Lamar Jackson at least
deserves that opportunity when we are going to compare the two,
(12:17):
at least that needs to be a part of the
equation because for as great as Mark Andrews is at
tight end, it is not a game breaker in a
big play receiver like you have with Stefan Diggs and Buffalo,
and I think if we saw that in Baltimore, we'd
maybe even have a different feeling about Lamar Jackson. I think,
I think you're onto something. Uh. Stefan dis has helped
(12:38):
has certainly helped Josh Allen go from good to great
this year, right. Stefen Diggs is a true number one.
Stefan Diggs is an outstanding route runner, creates tremendous separation,
so he makes the game easy for Josh Allen to
make these throws because he's wide open and Josh Allen
has been cashing in those lottery tickets. Stefon Diggs gives
Josh Allen someone that he knows he can go to
(12:59):
any pitch. He and Coles Beasley are both effective in
their respective roles. Key Cole Beasley does a great job
work in a slot. He's effective on third down, and
he does a good job of moving the chains. Stefan
Diggs is a pure number one. He's a route runner
that can run every rout in the book and he
can get open against all types. And I think that
helps Lamar Jackson doesn't have that gown the perimeter. But
(13:22):
then the Baltimore Ravens are also asking Lamar Jackson to
be more of a runner than the Bills are asking
Josh Allen. They're sprinkling Josh Allen and as a runner.
They're using and featuring Lamar Jackson as a runner. That's
the slight difference. But I mean, both guys are winning. Um.
Lamar Jackson is twenty nine and seven as a starting
(13:42):
quarterback in the league. Josh Allen is twenty seven and fifteen,
both winning quarterbacks. One has an m v P and
Lamar Jackson the other is in the m v P discussion.
I just wish more people would appreciate both of them
as opposed to pitting them against one another, because I
think both of them are really standing players and they're
really coming into their own players in this league. Fair
(14:04):
enough for you, and I know that when you're drafted
in the same draft class, you know it, what's that
the draft class? You just know, like we we we
can't give both of them their flowers. We have to
have the debate because yeah, just a good conversation. Well yeah,
I mean, hey, look at look at the Eli, Philip Rivers,
Ben Roethlisberger, you know two thousand four, right, I mean
(14:27):
that that's what it is class of you know, eighty
four quarterbacks. When you're in the same draft class and
you're a quarterback, that's who you will be compared to. Look,
Patrick Mahomes, Deshaun Watson, and Mitchell Trabinsky will always be linked.
And that's just the way it is, absolutely always. He's
Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer, sitting in for Doug Gottlieb
(14:48):
here on the Doug gotlib Show on Fox Sports Radio.
You can get Bucky on Twitter at Buckey Brooks. I'm
at Dan Buyer on Fox. So what really went wrong
that led to Dwayne Haskins leaving d C. We'll talk
about it next year on Fox. Be sure to catch
the live edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at
three pm Easter noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and
the I Heart Radio app. He's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer.
(15:11):
We are sitting in for Doug Gottlieb today here on
Fox Sports Radio. Bucky our executive producers Bo Benson, who's
an Oklahoma fan, and I'm just guessing that he sent
out the tweet previewing our show because he said, who
would you rather have at quarterback Lamar Jackson or Josh
Allen and then it said or Baker Mayfield. Baker Mayfield
was not a part of the conversation. I just want
(15:32):
to say that this is a two horse race right
now on who is the best quarterback Ofen. So I
just I just wanted to just to lay that out
there that there was There was no Baker Mayfield thrown
into this conversation, although he did have a good stretch
for a while. I just don't know why they threw
fifty three times against the Jets. I mean, I think
(15:53):
that's that's that is something that everyone will ask, particularly
if the Browns find themselves on the outside looking at
him when it comes to the playoffs. Why, in a
big game without receivers you decided that you wanted to
be an area team as opposed to handleball to two
of the top running backs in the league. It is
it is out thinking yourself. Like if you think, like, well,
the Jets are gonna key in on Nick Chubb and
(16:15):
our running game and Kareem Hunt, then we're gonna surprise them.
But when you have to go down to you know,
w R five and and even further to get wide
receivers out there. It doesn't make doesn't make a lot
of sense for you to be throwing the football that much.
And if you lose running the football fifty times against
the Jets, then you lose running a football fifty times
against the Jets. Had rather lose that way than lose
(16:37):
the way that the Browns did. Uh. In weeks sixteen,
Brown's getting a bit of a break with the benching
of Ben Roethlisberger for week seventeen, not benching. He's gonna
be resting, but he's not gonna start. We'll get into
all that later in Ralph Irvin will have more at
the bottom of the hour about what's going on in
the National Football League and so much more. But to
(16:57):
your point, when when it comes to the class of
and Acre is gonna be connected, So Sam Donald, and
and and and Josh Rosen will be in there, but
I don't think he's gonna be a part of the conversation. Uh,
to just kind of wrap up what we were saying.
Those quarterbacks are always put together, but right now Alan
and Jackson just are leaps and bounds ahead of everybody
else in that class. Yeah, I think so, I think
(17:17):
you have to put those those guys one into one, A,
one B, whatever you wanna call it, not only their
individual success but their team success. However, both of them
suffer from the same kind of the same big question
going into the playoffs. Can they handle the moment in
the postseason. Josh Allen last year melted down a little
(17:38):
bit versus the Houston Texans, only completed fifty of his passes,
he was not able to get the Buffalo Bills to
a win. And then Lamar Jackson and two playoff games
has yet to get his team over the hump, and
he's completing for the playoffs right above. And so the
next step for Alan and Jackson is to be able
(17:59):
to take what they've been able to do in the
regular season and have it play out in the postseason
where they can leave their team to wins. What do
you think the next step is for Dwayne Haskins. Mm hmm.
That's a long rebuild. It's a long rebuilding just because
everything that is associated when you say the name Dwayne Haskins. Now,
the optics are just so bad in terms of visual
(18:22):
that you get. You have the selfie, you have the
the photo from the club, you have the performance on
the field. It's just hard to overcome that in your mind.
And so for him, best scenario for him is if
he is able to land on a team on a roster,
he has to completely revamp how he's going about his business. Um,
(18:45):
he documented how he was working hard in the off
season last year, but now people are going to look
at that kind of with UM the Rocks people, I
the raised eyebrow, like, I don't know if he's really
working like that. So he's going to have to change
his habits, how he goes to work, how he leads.
He's gonna have to be quiet and just be a worker,
(19:07):
and we will see if he really loves the game,
because this will be the hardest thing that he has
to do to earn back an opportunity not just to
play in the league, but he need to be even
considered a starting quarterback in this league. And it's crazy
to think that after only two years in the league
he's Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer sitting in for Doug
(19:28):
Gotliep here on the Doug Gottlieb Show here on Fox
Sports Radio, joining us now as he does every Tuesday
of the NFL season. NBC Sports, NFL analyst Football Night
in America. Former NFL quarterback Chris Simms joins The Doug
Gottlip Show. Hey Chris, happy holidays. How are you? Hey? Gay?
What's up? Bucky? Dan? What's up? Happy holidays? Do you guys?
Hope you're well? Buck? Yet we are? We are doing well.
Dwayne Haskins isn't. And Bucky just waited on the Haskins
(19:50):
situation in Washington. Where did it ultimately go wrong? And
how does Dwayne Haskins turn things around after less than
two years in the NFL? Oh, I mean that that's
there's a lot I think here. I mean not a lot,
but hey, this is one of it was one of
the younger guys in the NFL draft when he came out.
He only played one year at Ohio State. Yes, he's
(20:13):
got physical ability. I mean he moves better than people
gave him credit for sizes of skill. He does have
a strong arm. But yeah, it wasn't a lack of
I mean, it wasn't a lot of reps in college
playing the position. And on top of that, he was
on a really talented team where you know, they were simple,
they didn't need to complicate things. So he maybe didn't
(20:36):
learn some of the nuances of the position that maybe
other quarterbacks, you know, learn through college, because hey, when
I watched Ohio State when he was coming out, it was, hey,
keep six or seven guys into protect, let's send two
or three guys out in a route. I don't know
if he really had anything to do with the past
protection and then hey, our receivers are better than your guy. Okay,
he's open, I'll throw with you, simple as that. But
(20:58):
I think so he wasn't quite ready for all that
he had to take on. I think in the football
world he is a little young and immature, as we've seen,
and he handled himself the wrong way there. And I
don't know if he had total organizational support there either.
I mean, that's the other issue. Who in that building
really wanted Dwayne Haskins even in last year's coaching regime.
(21:20):
I'm not sure who did. I know Dan Snyder did,
and that seems to be a reoccurring issue with him
sticking in his nose. But the quarterback situation, so I
think it's all of that. I know the kid is
a good kid, and I do believe that. I know that.
I hope he can just kind of get back, you know,
on the on the on the good, straight and narrow
(21:40):
path here and find his way back into the league
and and work his way up the ladder again to
to maybe get a chance to play and be on
a football team. You know, Chris, you've experienced the ups
and downs have been in the National Football League, being
a starter, being demoted, kind of having to work your
way back up. A lot of what you guys do
as quarterbacks, it's not even about what you do on
(22:01):
the field, but it's the maturity and the leadership. So
if you had to advise a young Dwayne Haskins, how
do you repair that reputation that's been besmirched? What would
you tell him? What would be the process to go
back in terms of just learning how to be a pro? Yeah?
I mean, Bucky, I mean you you said it your
spot on there and and I think it's you know,
you're a quarterback in the NFL. One we shouldn't be
(22:24):
having a conversation about, oh, you need to get better
and shipped. You know, you need to get in shape
a little bit better. You should lose a little weight, right,
you know, you know, quarterbacks, Bucky there type a they
wake up and they're thinking about wake, how many calories
am I gonna have today? What am I gonna do
the work out? Like? What? What? What I would say
to Dwayne haskins Man is you gotta live it like
all day long, seven three sixty five. It's a short career.
(22:48):
Even if you play for fifteen or twenty years, it's
a short span in your life overall. My dad will
tell you he played for fifteen years. He can't even
remember most of his career now. It's been so long ago.
So make the most of it. And I think it's
you know, it's all encompassing diet, work, ethic, sleep, all
of that. And I think some of that not going
(23:10):
to the strip club or partying on a Sunday after
a game or when you're in the middle of a
playoff race during a pandemic. You know, it's just those
little things that you saw where Yeah, I don't know
if he quite gets it quite yet to know what
it really takes to be the starting quarterback in the NFL.
There's no days off in the regular season first starting quarterback. Yeah,
Tuesday's the day off for the players, not for a
(23:31):
starting quarterback. I promise you Tom Brady's in the facility
on a Tuesday, Aaron Rodgers in the facility on Tuesday.
And I think it's those things that, you know, he
needs someone to kind of show him the way. There
Chris Simms joining us here on Fox Sports Radio. He's
Bucky Brooks. I'm Dan Buyer, sitting in for Doug Gottlieb
today here on the Doug Gottlieb Show. Last night, you know,
Josh Allen, great night. Bucky and I talked about the
(23:53):
Bills and the Bills quarterback at the start of the show.
But on the opposite side, we are seeing Twitter and
social media filled with Bill Belichick chucking a phone after
a bad challenge of a play in that game. What
what happens with New England's offseason. What's the first thing
that Belichick needs to do to to turn things around
in New England. Well, they got to figure out what
(24:14):
they're gonna do at quarterback. That's the number one thing.
And whether that stay with Cam Newton or make the change.
Either way, they got to make that decision fairly quick, like,
if you want to keep Cam Newton, and I think
they're I don't think that's out of the realm of possibility.
You know, I I still think they look at it
and go they're they're realistic up there in New England.
They know he hasn't had great help. He didn't get
(24:35):
the off season to learn the offense all those things.
So if you are going to bring him back his quarterback,
we need to make that decision quickly so you can
start to mold him into the guy you want. We
can get the full offseason. Just start saying, hey, we're
gonna put this in in the offense, learn this, do that,
Let's work on some of your mechanics throwing the football,
Let's work on the unspoken language of offensive coordinator quarterback. Hey,
(24:58):
when I call this play, this is what I'm thinking
in this situation. And then the quarterback can really be
in the mind of the offensive coordinator that way. So
that's the first thing they gotta do. Figure out what
they're gonna do at quarterback. That'll that'll help everything else.
Because you're gonna keep Cam Newton, then okay, we're gonna
go with Cam. He's our guy. Now you start to
formulate the pieces around him. They got a top notch
(25:20):
offensive line, it's one of the best in football. They
got pretty good running backs as we see. I'd like
to see them get a home run hitter like you
saw Sony Michelle with the big run last night. I
would say, like the top ten backs in football and
that second play of the game or whatever, that would
have been a touchdown touchdown, you know. But and then
some receivers. You know, whether Edelman comes back, but he
(25:41):
needs not a Tom Brady offense. He needs more of
what he had in Carolina. You know what we see
there with that with d J. Moore, Curtis Samuel faked
the speech sweep. You don't know which way I'm gonna
run the boots the play actions off of that. So
that's the biggest thing with New England. But yeah, there's
a lot of holes to fill New England right now.
But I have faith in them and they got a
(26:02):
lot of money to spend this offseason. You know, Chris Um,
when you think about Josh Allen, because you had a
chance to watch the game a lot of times, Josh
Allen is tied with Lamar Jackson when everyone is comparing
the quarterbacks, Lamar Jackson and the Ravens have played better
when you had a chance to look at them. What
has been the difference for the Ravens going down the stretch.
Why are they playing their best ball right now? Well,
(26:23):
I think the you know Lamar Jackson in the past
game has been a little bit better as of late.
You know, there at least is some wide receiver involvement.
Not that it needs to be like Mahomes the Tyree
kill or anything like that, but they went through a
little phase there where you win, can they throw the
ball to anybody other than Mark Andrews or the tight
(26:44):
sk Can we get one receiver to get involved in
the football game. So we've seen that. You know, I
think the offensive line play has been better as of late.
And the thing I tell a lot of people too,
because I think we lose sight when they lost that
little four out of five game. Then they played some
good teams. We can't forget that. You know, they they
lost to Pittsburgh twice, and I would argue they really
(27:05):
kind of outplayed Pittsburgh both times. You know. The New
England loss was ugly. Yes, Belichick, he figured out their
lack of passing game, their secondary, their matchup. They lost
that tight one to the Titans. But they do seem
like they're rolling right now. And then the other aspects.
I think they're getting a little healthier on the defensive
side of the ball too. So where man, Bucky, I
(27:26):
don't know how you feel about it, but the way
the Ravens look right now, I wouldn't want to be
playing them wild card game, uh, the first round, having
them come into town and dealing with that. He's Chris Simms,
former NFL quarterback of course Football Night in America, NBC
Sports NFL analysts joining us here on Fox Sports Radio.
You mentioned the Ravens playing for their playoff lives and
(27:47):
trying to get into the postseason. So are the Cleveland
Browns and they didn't help themselves in Week sixteen, Bucky
and I touched on this just just a little bit,
with the the amount of pass attempts. Why did they
throw the ball fifty three times against the Jets? No,
I mean, I'm with you. Well, the first thing is,
you know, the Jets front is real. The Jets they
(28:07):
kicked the crap out of the Rams front the week before,
and you know, watch them back the game a little
bit yesterday. The Jets were all in to stop the
run game. They knew there was a lack of wide
receivers there, and I think pretty early on Stefanski looked
at it with, oh, I don't like the way this looks,
and yeah, maybe got away from the run game a
(28:28):
little too much, but they were basically daring them to
pass the football with some of the defensive alignments they
played also too. You know, I think you gotta take
into account a little bit where just the timing of
how they found out. You know, they found out on
a Saturday. Man, your game plans in you've actually stopped
thinking about your game plan. You're fine tuning to where
(28:51):
I think they got a little stuck in Wait, how
much can we change up here on the fly with
the new personnel or do we just call these practice
squad were Fever's up. They know these plays we ran
in practice and try to do what we were going
to do in the game. Anyways, I think they got
stuck in between a little bit of course, some early
turnovers with the strip sacks fumble and the Jets defensive line.
(29:13):
Like I said, a pretty stylet group there, and uh,
I guess that's what I would attribute it too. But
that's game changing the fact that they didn't have those
receivers because that took away a lot of the threats
of the boot game, the play action pass, and that's
what Cleveland is. They just want to run the ball,
run boots, run, play action pass, and and whatever order
(29:33):
they want to do it. It's very effective and that
was taken away without the receivers last week. Chris, I
have to ask you just how challenging is it going
to be for the Rams and the Cardinals to play
a do or die game with backup quarterbacks who haven't
thrown a pass in the National Football League. Oh? I
mean yeah, I just I can't imagine any either quarterback
(29:55):
being tremendously successful or feeling comfortable. I'll give the advance
is to the Rams as far as I think Walford
and what he can do there has a better chance.
Um then I'm blanking on his name there, uh from Arizona,
the kid they're talking from. Yeah, right, Like I'm um,
(30:17):
So the Rams offense, I think that will be an
easier transition, you know, will be just talked about like
the Browns and what they do. You guys watch the
Rams every week? What do they do? Inside zone? Fake
the speed sweep, inside zone, give the speed sweep, fake
the inside zone, you know, fake the speed sweep fake,
the inside don't bootleg fake, the speed sweep fake, the
(30:37):
inside zone play action pass fake, the speed sweep fake,
the inside zone screen pass. I mean, that's all they do,
So it's not going to be a tremendous adjustment. Well,
they'll probably lose some stuff to some of the things
golf can do with the letta scrimmage. McVeigh is not
gonna want him overwhelm him with that, But I think
that's gonna be an easier transition for the Rams, who
are truly a run first football team and played defense.
(31:01):
That is the mantra of what they are. Where the Cardinals,
you know, you guys know it's Kyler Murray centric, and
now it's like, wait, Kyler Murray is not there. What
the hell is this gonna look like? Now? This kid
like he can run for sure, and I think that's
why he maybe gonna get the nod as the backup quarterback.
I thought they would go with Brett Hunley just because
(31:22):
he's got experience, He's played in some meaningful games. You know,
I don't know about this other kid is a pure passer.
That's what I worry about. But I see them being
a little bit more handicapped because they they have a
good run game, but it's only good because of Kyler Murray.
It's not a run game where I go, oh, they
can impose their will downhill with Kenyan Drake against most
(31:45):
teams in football. Know, the good defense has always stopped
their run game. It's about Kyler Murray. He's feasted on
the poor there a little bit. So I'm a little
bit more worried about the Arizona situation than I am
the Rams situation. With Murray, he gets two yards and
then if he falls forward, it's three, and if it's not,
it just stays two. He's Chris Sims, NBC Sports NFL Analysts,
Final one before we let you go. Our four hours
(32:08):
going to be set aside tonight for the Alamo Bowl.
Is this something that you're excited about? Is the Horns
go up against Colorado or not so much? Well, I mean,
I am, it's my Horns, but like god, man, I'm
so sick of seeing us in Alamo Bowls and crap
like that. I can't lie. I mean, damn, We're Texas
and we're irrelevant in college football. I'm just I'm sick
(32:29):
of that. I can't. I can't lie about it. What
leads to change? I mean, first off, the talent level
on the team. I mean North Dakota States sending more
people to the NFL every year than Texas is right now,
It's like not even close. There's schools that we've never
heard of that are sending more players to the pros.
And then can we differentiate ourselves from the rest of
(32:50):
the Big twelve that flag football conference? Can we Can
we run the ball and get a fullback and get
eccentric Benson type runner or Rich Williams type runner. Can
we get some pro offensive lignment again? Or do we
have to all be Oklahoma and play seven on seven
flag football too? In touch, that's what drives me crazy
right now. Now. It's worked for law again, work for
(33:10):
Stanford for so many years in the Pac twelve. Maybe
the uh, the old Horns should should take some advice. Chris,
We appreciate it. Enjoy the game as much as he
can to not at least and uh, Happy New Year.
Can't wait to talk to you again. Happy Happy New Year?
Do you guys too. Be sure to catch the live
edition of The Doug Gottlieb Show week days at three
p m. Easter noon Pacific. He's Bucky Brooks the NFL
(33:31):
V of course, so Fox Sports one of the NFL
network as well former NFL scout Tom dan Buyer. We
are sitting in for Doug Gottlieb today here on the
Doug Gottlieb Show. I am kicking myself, Bucky, because with
Chris Sims just on, if we had more time, I
should have asked you guys to swap mc brown stories. Yeah.
I mean, I don't know if there are any bad
(33:53):
ones because we only hear great things about mac Brown.
But you guys definitely have that in common of of
being your college head coaches. So that's a that's an
E five on me. I missed that one. It's all good.
I'm sure there'll be the opportunity, absolutely, And I give
you credit for not pumping up your tar heels with
(34:13):
Chris on the line and having to watch an alamobile
while you get to take in an Orange Bowl, even
though you're losing a lot of players to that game.
All right, let's speak, go ahead, No, no, no, it
is funny because I do wonder what he would have said,
how said you know, because I thought, you know, Chris,
they probably could have kept going today, kept coaching around around.
(34:34):
All right, let's speaking of games. Let's play when they're going.
This is game time on the Doug Gottlieb Show. What's happening,
Ralph Oloha? What what game do we have today? Today?
We have rank them? All right? What are we? What
are we ranking? What do we what do we got
(34:56):
on hand? Oh? We got a golf swing. We got
that with the NFL's Monday Fast Approaching Rank the top
three openings or possible openings in the NFL. Okay, Bucky,
I I have I have a list. I have a
list here, and I'm just I have Chargers number one,
(35:20):
Jaguars number two, and the Jets number three. What do
you think about that charge them? Has the charges? Frid
Anthony Lennon, I missed it. I missed that. Is he
the building? Well, I'll tell you what. There are some
teams that don't have the coaches. Yeah, he did say
(35:41):
potential so so, but listen, I mean if that job
becomes available, that came, if that came to fruition, Okay,
I'm yes, that would be the number one job quarterback.
And you have people that, like you already have a
nice roster with some talent, so yes, there will be there.
Jacksonville will be the obvious choice because you have the
(36:02):
number one overall picks, so you can get Trevor Lawrence.
You have a ton of draft picks, and you got
a lot of salary cap space. After that, I might
go for the Houston Texans because you got the franchise
quarterback and then you gotta rebuild everything. You don't have
to picks, but you got the quarterback, and so I'll
go that way. All right, fair enough? Speaking of Black Monday,
(36:23):
former Ohio State ed coach Urban Meyer's name has been
mentioned for the NFL ranked the top three destinations for
the next year, whether they be college pro TV. Al right, Bucky,
this is on you. Where where where do you think
the best spots for urban Meyer in the new year
are gonna be? Hm, this is tasty. Um, let's say
(36:45):
Jacksonville will be an easy one to think about. He
used to coach at Florida. It's only at five minute
ride from Jacksonville to Gainesville. That's easy. He'd probably get
back in his old house. So, um, let's say that
would be one. I think the if the charges job
came open, I think there would be another interesting one
(37:06):
because I think they just need a leader and a
game manager. Um. College wise, there are any major openings
that I can think of, because he didn't do the
Texas thing, s C would be a natural one, but
s he still has a coach. I still think the
Big Noon Saturday on Fox desk is a good one
because he's really starting to make his name as an
(37:26):
analyst as well. I think that that that can receive
honorable mention. Yeah, but he's a coach. Sure, he's a coach.
Fair enough alright. Final water Ralph on the heels of
Frank Gore, passing sixteen thousand rushing yards, ranked the top
three running backs of all time. M hmmm, uh, I'm
(37:49):
gonna go Barry Sanders one. Um, actually, no, Jim Brown one.
Barry Sanders to Walter Payton three. That's mine right there.
M M. I would go Jim Brown. I'll go Walter Payton.
And how are you gonna put the NFL Russian leader
not on the list? Emma Smith has to be at
least three. Come on, come on, you have to deal
(38:12):
with and he comes all time, all time. We gotta
put him in there. He's fucking Brooks. I've dan buyer.
That's Ralph Irvan. Thanks to Ralph before the game today.
Coming up next is Bill Belichick just playing with us all.
We'll talk about it next year
