(00:31):
We got the Duke's Mayo Bowl already done. Now we
got the Catton Ball, the Catton Boll Catton Bowl. Couple
will not play at the Cotton Both, right, Let's play
at Jerry's World. I think I'm not really sure. Um,
we had some college football on tap tonight. Clemson their
(00:53):
offensive coordina Tony Elliott's not gonna miss gonna miss the
game against Ohio State, but they will have Trevor Lawrence. So, uh,
you got a lot to get to, man. I think
the most interesting stuff really is is in the NFL.
Uh Kyler Murray is going to play, and I'm kind
(01:15):
of fired up Roost. I don't know if you are.
I'm fired up to see this Gafford kid who's gonna
play against you know, yeah, yeah, I mean, let's see
what he can do. So you know, I mean, I
everybody seems to think they're gonna lose to the Cardinals,
but that the Barrels will lose to the Packers, so
the Rams will back their way into the playoffs. So
you never know. I think they beat the Cardinals, I hope. So,
(01:38):
I mean, they seem to have their their You talked
about them having the number, not having the number of
the forty niners, but they do seem to have the
Cardinals number. But we'll have to see. I mean, I
have not seen this guy play, so I know, Uh,
it's it can't be any worse than what I've seen
so far from golf. From golf. Yeah, I mean, I mean, look,
I I think, Look, I'm a Rams fan. Maybe I'm
(01:59):
being too. The problem is they're not gonna have Cooper Cup. Yeah,
that that hurt. Remember what happened the last year and
they lost Cooper Cup. I actually didn't think it was
gonna be that big of a deal, but it really
was a big deal. I'm sorry to year that the
Super Bowl that they lost him. Yet that was here's
need to that year. That was a big deal. It
really was. Well, Uh, I'm I can't wait, that's a
(02:20):
game that I'm super excited for. I mean, look there,
some of these games this weekend are really interesting. You know,
Packers Bears, because the Packers they had a window clinch
shone field throughout right and they still have to that.
My my getting thumbs up from around the room. I
gotta make sure on that one. Um. You know, Washington
still trying to get into the playoffs, right, they cut
(02:40):
their starting quarterback from last week, Dallas taken on the German.
That's an early game on Fox. Who would who would have?
Who would have thunked that one? But the playoff pictures
really interesting if you kind of look around right as
as of so, the chiefs of the one seed, the
Bills and the Steelers have the same wreck heard right now,
(03:00):
the Bills would be ahead for the two seed Steelers.
Three seed Titans as of now would be the four
seed Dolphins, five raven six Browns. Seven of the Browns
that had to beat the Steelers in order to absolutely
secure a spot in the playoffs. Of course they're going
against um uh Mason Rudolph, who of course they played
(03:23):
last year, dominated him last year, but their defense was
much better last year. Mason Rodolph was not very good
last year as well. On the NFC side, the Packers
have the best record. I believe they are thinking that
the best record because they they beat the Oh it's
with the Seahawks, right, they beat the Saints earlier in
the season, so the Packers would get to buy as
of now, the Saints of the two seed, they would
(03:45):
play the Bears. The Seahawks would be the three seed.
They pay the Rams, and the Washington football team would
be the four seed. They would play Tampa as of
as of now, that is that's a murky picture, right,
And so then fenly, who do they play play the
lowest remaining seed? Is that the way it works with
(04:07):
with the playoffs once they once you get in, it's
it's the lowest remaining seed. Well, it doesn't. The one
seed gets the buy. So yeah, then it would be
the I would assume that the lowest remaining seed. And
if the Packers win this weekend, then they clinch number one.
So they or if I'm not almost taken, the Seahawks lose,
(04:27):
but they they're harvering over the one spot. They haven't
clinched it just yet. Yeah, they have the tiebreaker with
the Saints because they beat the Saints. UH. In the NFC,
here's here's basically the here here's kind of the rundown
of it. Right. Green Bay gets the first round by
with a win or a or a Seahawks loss or tie. UM.
(04:48):
New Orleans has to win and have a green Bay
loss in order for them to get the one seed.
And if the Seahawks win and Green Bay loses and
New Orleans loses, then the Seahawks get the one seed.
The Washington has to win and they're in Rams have
to win or the Bears lose. In there in Chicago
has to win or have an Arizona loss, or if
(05:10):
they both tie, Arizona can clinch with a win. UH,
Dallas can clinch with a win and a Washington loss.
The Giants can clinch with a wind because they would
beat Dallas and with a Washington loss. There you go.
So I I love, I mean, look, I hate when
weeks seventeen you have like what you have with Carolina,
(05:31):
where you know, like, all right, we don't need to
use Christian McCaffrey and he played what It's crazy what
happened with Christian McCaffrey because he played every game, every
game of his career all forty eight games up until
this year when he had already signed the big contract extension.
(05:52):
And he's not a guy who I don't think we'll
play hurt. But it is kind of fascinating. Nonetheless, So
Baltimore has to what they have to win. What has
to happen for Baltimore. Let me go back to what
Baltimore has to do in order for them to get
in because Baltimore right now UH is in the playoffs
at ten and five, and they would play the Steelers
(06:12):
in the playoffs like as of right now, that's like
that would be a can you imagine that as a
first round matchup? Okay, so Baltimore has to win if
they win, or if Cleveland loses, or if Indianapolis loses.
So go to that one and look at that one.
Baltimore this weekend plays at Cincinnati, which feels like an
(06:34):
easy win only Sincenat's been a lot better of late. UH.
India is the team that could be the could be
on the outside looking in. On the other hand, you know, Pittsburgh,
we'll see how they play and who they if they
want to avoid anybody. But India is a team who
absolutely has to win this week. If you look back
on their season, man, that Pittsburgh loss from where they
(06:57):
had seven league they got Jacksonville. So they're gonna win
this week. So they win and anybody else loses and
they're in. And you take that team Baltimore Cleveland losing,
you put him right in the playoffs. Who all right?
We good? We we said we haven't caught our breath. Okay,
that's that's great. Um. A couple of things I want
(07:17):
to get to before my man, Um. Ryan Rissilo joins
us eight seven seven ninety nine Fox. I saw this
tweet from Joe Banner, and I would have to tell you,
I gotta I think it's perfectly put, perfectly put. So
Joe Banner, who of course joins us sometimes here on
the show. He's a former general manager. He's longtime in
(07:39):
Philadelphia for general manager of Cleveland Browns. Quote. Everyone assumes
that Haskins is really talented and that he was derailed
by other things. The other things were a problem, but
most of the NFL evaluators I spoke to thought he
was never that highly regarded. The media folks missed on
this one badly. This is one of those classic cases
of he was at Ohio State. Ohio State had JT. Barrett,
(08:02):
who's not a pro prospect seemingly at all. And you
go from JT. Barrett to a guy who, I mean,
I think we would all consider Dwayne Haskins a prospect.
The difference was so great and their talent was so
much better than everybody else at every position position, Like
look at the guys he started with in college, and
you're like, wow, really, so when Ohio State had had
(08:28):
had Dwayne Haskins as their starting quarterback, like, go back
and look at that team. Remember that was Nick Bosa's
year where Nick Bosa got hurt and then basically opted
out of the season. They had JK. Dobbins, who's starting
running back in in the NFL. Right, So, okay, you
start out what you're running back is um is an
(08:52):
NFL caliber starter. Then you start to look around, You're like, wow,
they had dudes all over, didn't they? And the answer
is absolutely, they did, you know, absolutely, I mean, just
they were just better than everybody else. Terry mclauren, he's
a starter in the National Football League, you know, I mean,
(09:12):
and frankly he's the he's the better player the better
prospect of the two in terms of receiving. You know,
he had you know, Paris Campbell, you had kJ Hill
like you had just dudes all over all over. So
Chris Alvey was barely playing back then. But I I
(09:35):
so that hides some of the talent. And you know
Ryan Day and his play calling high hid some of
the talent. But I think it's interesting on how we
we get off on these kind of side conversations. And yes,
it made it easier to cut him because he went
to a strip club. It made it easier to cut
him because of the selfie when they were gonna win
(09:58):
the game three years ago. But if you're good enough,
we can brush that stuff out under the rug. The
difference is he wasn't good enough, didn't study enough, and
then you have those other issues which clearly derailed them all. Right,
coming up next, are we speaking of Ohio State? Speaking
of Ohio State, they have a quarterback who I think
(10:22):
right now everybody thinks that Justin Fields will be the
second player taking in the draft. Are you go back
and look at last year forty one touchdowns, three interceptions. Wow,
this year far fewer games, only fifteen touchdowns, five interceptions
in six games. Are we sure that Justin Fields is
(10:45):
going to be the second quarterback off the board? Plus?
Why all the blowouts in the NBA? My man Ryan
Risilo joins us and helps break it down for us. Next,
be sure to catch the live edition of The Doug
god Leap Show weekdays at three p m. Easter noon
Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio
app Doug Otlip Show Fox Sports Radio. Hope you are
(11:09):
super super for this new year, right, I really do?
Um kind of something weird going on in the n
b A. I get that it's hard to tell what's
what and who's who, But dude, there's just been some blowouts,
just bad games on these nationally televised games. I want
to get to that. But I also like, look my
next guest. He he's got great perspective. I enjoy his
(11:33):
podcast a great deal. We've worked together in same places
at other places. Ryan Risilla, the Ryan Still the podcast
you you can you can download. Um, he'll join us.
I just I do wonder about Justin Fields right, Like,
I don't know, man, I think he's good, but we're
(11:53):
just we're sitting here telling ourselves he's great and that
he's somewhere in the Trevor Lawrence to discussion, and I'm
not sold. I'm not. Maybe I'm holding him to too
high a standard. Maybe it's the Dwayne Haskins. And I
know he's a far different athlete, for far different player
than Dwayne Haskins. Right, Like Dwayne Haskins was a pocket passer,
(12:14):
just old school pocket passer. But it's not just misses,
it's some of the throws are off target, and he's
it's just so used to last year having guys running
free and wide open, and that's not as much the case.
I don't know, I'm I'm not I'm not as sold
(12:35):
on Justin Fields as maybe I should be. But heck,
I mean again, not only do on some level we
run the risk of doing another Dwayne Haskins, But then
we look at the charges and we're like, all right,
well we were way too harsh in you know, in
our critique of a quarterback who one a Rose Bowl
(12:58):
was the Packed twelve player of the year, and you know,
Justin Herbert seems way better than we possibly could have
thought he was. Where does Justin Fields fitt in that conversation.
Let's welcoman Ryan was still Roy still the podcast. Um,
you know when you turn on Lawrence some of the
things he does just jump off the screen that the
numbers last year for justin Fields and some of the
(13:19):
movement were correct. I mean, forty five touchdowns, forty one touchdown, whatever,
three interceptions this year, it doesn't feel like there's a
leap in improvement. And you know, the more you play
in college football, at some point gets too easy for
these guys. Am I wrong to be a little bit more,
a little bit hesitant and in terms of just keeping
(13:39):
praise and saying there's your number two pick at him? No,
I don't think you're wrong at all. The beginning of
the year, I probably and I think we're all guilty
of this to do this for a living. And you
start watching, you're like, hey, what an interesting topic be
Is the gap between Lawrence and feels closer than you think.
That's a hell of a tease. I'm gonna do that
segment and then you kind of talk to yourself into
it a little bit. And I was doing that at
(14:00):
the beginning of the year of the Fields. I granted,
this whole House State season was kind of tough to
figure out, but you know they run an incredible offense.
I'm not saying it's the bailor offense where you just
put a huge numbers and you don't really have anything
that adapts to being an NFL quarterback. You know, take
my word for it. Countless NFL evaluators outside of the
exact same thing. But Ohio State puts up some big
numbers at these guys. And just because Haskins has been terrible,
(14:21):
it doesn't mean Fields is gonna be good. That's not fair.
I think all of us believe it. Field is better,
but maybe that's what we've seen Haskins be terrible for
two years. But um, there was a stretch where I
started to kind of go away, that's actually a bad
segment because Lawrence is that much better than him, Because
I don't even know if it was Fields and a
lack of ability, it was that so many guys are
so open on those routes where all of those sick
(14:41):
receivers running around that I felt like he started making
some mistakes because he was like, wait, why is there
another guy over there? Like that guy's never there on
the post, like that's always wide open, And so it
was almost him throwing out of habit going. It wasn't
like his inability to see things. He just was so
used to not having some of these routes ever challenged,
so that the only time where I go this may
not even necessarily be on him. It could be a
(15:03):
quick adjustment, but at least it was happening. Where with Lawrence,
you know, I mean, good luck picking that apart, because
he's been incredible. Do you think Miami is truly sold
on to a No, not at all. But you know
what I do love that they did is that they
did bench him and they didn't. You know, we spent
a lot of time, um going, well, if you're gonna
start with a guy, you to start with a VT
and bring the rookie in because you can't bench bench
(15:24):
the rookie and the other destroyer's confidence. I mean, if
these guys were as fragile as the media makes it
not to be, I don't know how any of them
was that successful. If two is gonna be really good,
it's not going to be because of how he's used. Yes,
there are exceptions, but the two apart that's been frustrating
is that I thought one of the great parts about him,
it wasn't so much arm strength, but it was his
ability to manipulate safeties and get guys on deep shots.
And you know, you want to talk about how States
(15:46):
talent wide receiver the stuff too had to throw to
the last couple of years, like because Smith was I mean,
Davante was like, hey, that guy is always open too.
But we talked about like the four other two's that
were going in the draft, So you know, I think
I looked it up the other day Doug Gauseki was
was their leading yards per catch guy, and that's a
tight end. That's like, that can't be the guy. So
I don't think they trust him on the goal line
(16:07):
with the stuff I see them doing. They were winning
games because the defensive scoring and field position where he
was starting was ridiculous. So I've been disappointed and I
don't know that they're sold on it. But I mean,
you know, we're still not even talking a half a
season here, I don't think. So I'm holding out hope
because I had hope for him, like you out. It is.
It is interesting, like obviously he doesn't have the personality
quirks of a Josh Rosen, but you know, like do
(16:29):
they do it? Do they do a Rosen. You know,
I mean it's it's it's absolutely at some point in
time if you you know, if you have the guy
or if you it's like a relationship, right, you know,
if it's you, just you know when you know, and
if you don't know, then you probably do know. You're
just not willing to to pull that rip cord. Brian
Rosilla joining us the Ryan Stilla Podcast. Um, I think
(16:50):
you and back when you work with Scott, I mean
you guys passion for college football was unmatched in national
sports radio. Like I love it, Calherd loves it, but
you guys loved it, lived it with ever um two
pird yelled at all the time because like we'd want
to start Monday's show with college football and it's a
wrong move. Like I mean you and I were like
(17:10):
you me and then eventually I think you got Scott.
We all went to games like we loved it, and
you're you're like a part of people think you went
to l s U. Right, Like, man, I love the
l s U. You must have gone there, like no,
not even for huge improvement too, because everybody thought I
was a little cross team in Vermont and something. How
to think that I went to l s U. Now
it is like, hey, I'm moving up, but that is
definitely step. I'll just jumping. Yeah, I mean to jump
(17:32):
in quick though, like to be a part of it,
to explain it to people that don't get it. I
get how much everybody loves Someday, but there's something about
Saturday in these communities that that morph into this thing,
especially down South, and you know there's there's places all
over the country everybody wants to back their crew. I
remember I was at Penn's Day for white Out and
they're like, I've never seen anything like this. So they click,
it's pretty good. But you know, do you want me
(17:53):
to lie to you? And they couldn't believe it? And
then you bring somebody somewhere else. So yeah, I mean
I absolutely love it. And I would say, you know,
of all the challenges this year, they're far greater than
getting to travel, but it's it's my favorite part of
the business really. Okay. So with that in mind, at
some point in time, and I look, I think this
also falls on Oklahoma if they get back to the
College Fall Playoff. But at some point in time, Notre
(18:14):
Dame's gotta win one of these games. And and and
this doesn't feel like the year in which is going
to happen, but like how many times and and now
and now, look, Notre Dame will tell you like, look,
we gave Clemson the tougher game a couple of years ago.
Like yeah, okay, okay, like comeson, was not They might
have respected you, but it's not like they feared you
at some point in time. You gotta win one of
these games otherwise it just becomes s O S same
(18:36):
old you know, same old stuff. Um, is that a fair?
Like Notre Dame, we you know, it's it's good that
you're good and solid, but if you really want to
be taken seriously, you gotta win one of these games.
I don't think it's fair. I don't you know. When
I when I looked at the Raptors, I think it
was the same guy's familing. Okay, and yes, and I
(18:56):
mentioned this on the podcast today. I know they made
it to the Eastern Commedge finals. What to six it's
against the Calves. Trust me, the Calves weren't remotely frightened
by that Raptors team. And it was De Rosen and
Lowry De Rosen and Lowry nice regular season flame out.
People are trying to use the Oregon State Bowl game
against Notre Dame from twenty years ago, the ow State
FISTA Bowl game from fifteen years ago, you know, the
(19:17):
national title game UM in Miami eight years ago. I mean,
none of this is fair. I understand what people are
gonna say, but this is the Florida Gators thing. Excuse me,
it's really the How State Buckeyes thing where they get
smoked by Floor in the title game and they lose
the L s U. And trust it was really interesting
after that, he goes, you know, how State just that game? O,
How State Florida just got away from us. They're like,
L s U was just way better than us, so,
(19:39):
which is weird because if you looked at the score,
you're like, is that really what happened? But then all
of a sudden, How States getting dumped on by everybody
in the country, and you're like, wait, so we're the losers.
We win the Big Ten, we played for a national championship,
and we're the losers. So yes, everybody can make their
Notre Dame means and the same could be said of Oklahoma.
But if you keep doing what you need to do
to get into that four and it's not like of
(20:00):
a sudden you know, I remember you and I I
think we were arguing a little bit about Georgia last
year and I just said, well, you know, you can't
lose the two games. You can't like eventually, a loss
has to mean something. If it's if it's a one
lost chance versus maybe another undefeated team, there's there's a
chance we can talk. But we start talking about two
loss teams like, I'm sorry, you don't get to play
for a national championship. So I understand all the antiore
name stuff that's going on for decades, their Bowl arrangement,
(20:22):
the NBC stuff that's been going on since we were kids,
the anti in the sentiment out there. But I'm not
going to apologize if I'm a kid who wasn't a
part of any of those losses because I'm going up
against an undefeated Alabama team and if I get smoked, like,
what are we supposed to just you know, on an
unsubscribed email list now for the playoff if we go
undefeated again or only one loss. So I don't I
(20:43):
don't think it's entirely fair all the criticism, but I understand, Uh,
gott leave show here on Fox Sports Trade. I'm no,
I'm sorry. I was. I was. I was trying to
transition and I had a weird, real weird exhale and
it didn't mean in anything towards towards your here, and sir, uh,
let's get let's get let's get to the league. Let's
(21:03):
get to the league. Um, why do you think there's
so many blots? Um, they're there, are all right. So
the number going into last night was okay, so last
season twenty points or more score differentials, So you know
when by twenty or more, sixteen point seven percent at
the time this year, going into last night's game, it's
(21:24):
been at the time one of every four games or
more blowout. I mean Miami Milwaukee was fifty. Part of it,
I think is the threes. I kind of hate it,
I'll admit. I mean, I love this league. I love
all the drama. Sometimes I don't love all the drama,
but I love the entertainment part of it. But I
think it's you, somebody who you know could coach at
(21:45):
a high level. You like to figure out, like, hey,
what are they trying to do to them? All right?
What's their counter to that? What's the matchup they're looking for,
And now it's hey, who won? Why did they win? Well,
they made twenty three and then that's twelve. That's it.
And so even though the three point thing isn't new,
I think the way it expands every year is basically
the primary form of offense you see in almost every
(22:07):
single game do you watch. I think that part of
it has more to do with blowouts. I think guys
are probably either completely not on the same page, like
the Pelicans, where I'm using Miami as an example here,
which isn't very good because they get smashed last night,
but they didn't have Butler. But when they played the Pelicans,
their ball movement was completely like dominant against the Pelicans team.
That's all these new pieces that are trying to figure
(22:28):
out what their defensive rotations are. And not only are
they clueless on what their defensive concepts are they have
guys are just bad at defense too. So you add
it all together and it's a mess. And that's why
they get blowing up by Phoenix. So you can see
with teams or some of the teams with the shorter
layer layover um. When they're right, they're really good. But
because they've had a shorter layover, they're already resting guys,
and so then they'll they'll have a loss like the
(22:49):
Brooklyn game where when they have everybody there, that's a
really good team, or the Lakers, who Anthony Davis misses
a game, and then he played in the Portland game,
and I made the joke he missed that one too,
even though he was playing. So I think some of
some of the teams are really comfortable with who they are,
so the effort is lower. I think the three point
part of it is there. And then I also think
the layoff is so long for some of the other
teams that they're a complete mess. So yeah, that's my theory,
(23:12):
and I'm not sure if any of them are are
solid enough to I think I think there's a there's
a pretty good those are pretty solid ones. Okay, with
that in mind, let's start with the Lakers. You mentioned
the Anthony Davis no show. On paper, this appears to
be a deeper, more talented team than one that won
the NBA championship. But what's the old Kenny Maine. Games
aren't decided on paper, They're decide inside little television sets, right, um,
(23:37):
are they actually the best team in the league. They
are I can you know, I'm all for somebody deciding
to pick somebody else. You know, if you want to
tell me, hey, I'm gonna pick this because I want
to be a little different. I mean, I've done that
in the past, but it felt like all we were
doing is in Cleveland Golden State before the year started,
and to be right most of the time, and then
every now and then you're like, I just want to
be different and pick something different. The only thing I
(24:00):
would say is there there's two parts of this, and
one is the Clippers hangover. People really love hating on
the Clippers and and hating on that team Bow and
that three one lead, and that kind of surprised me
because a lot of people like doct and he's out.
I've never been a Paul George defender. Um, but even
you know, even the hardest Paul George defenders, like I
used to call him thirties thirteen because if he got
(24:21):
thirty in the playoff game at thirteen, he wouldn't be surprised.
And the problem is is he's more of a thirteen
guy there at the end. Apparently the bubble really bothered
that team more than other teams, and you know whatever,
I'm not gonna get into all that stuff. But I
don't know what happened. I wasn't there, but that team
was right there with the Lakers. They were And oh,
I like the Abaka transaction better than I like the
Mantres Harrold one. So I I really think the Clippers
(24:44):
need to be looked at is more of a threat,
But nobody wants to even do that because the Lakers roll.
They got better on paper, and everybody's still making three
one lead Clipper jokes, which I totally get. Like I'm
not telling you not to make the joke, right, but
the real the reality to it also is like they
were up three one for a reason, They were up
twenty points in Game five, in Game six and the
second half for a reason, Like they really were that good,
and they appeared to have not only gotten better, and
(25:07):
you know, we don't know in terms of chemistry if
they've gotten better, but and and I would I would
guess a year out of surgery, year further out of surgery,
Paul George should be better. And in terms of healing
up whatever is going on with KWHI Leonard, he should
be better, But I think I think the personnel is better.
I'm with you. Like we we dismissed the Clippers, but
you know, like just historically, we we even changed what
(25:28):
the Clipper curse used to be. Right, the Clipper curse
used to be that whoever was drafted by the Clippers
would get hurt or would suck. Right, Danny Ferry got hurt,
and uh they drafted what was the kid's name out
of less sad well, they all kind of just sucked, right,
But like Danny Ferry got hurt, Danny Manning got hurt
before ever they ever played for the Clippers, right, but
then and Blake Griffin got hurt before he played for
(25:49):
the Clippers. Right when then it became well they can't
get out of the second round. There was always something,
which is where they are now. But I I you know,
it's it's easy if they're they're low hanging fruit. It's
easy to make punchline jokes. But they're actually a really
talented team with a with an absolute superstar in terms
of on the floor talent, and with a co star
who when he's right, is really good. I'm with you.
(26:11):
I think the Clippers they're not a one A. But
if you said one B or two I'd be I'd
be right there alongside you. Yeah, that's all I'm saying,
you know, because they follow up to it's like, all right,
pick him, then pick him to win the West. And
I don't want to go that far, but I like,
I think a lot of people. I mean I I
stressed about who I thought was better between those two teams,
and I changed my mind all the time. I just
(26:32):
kept changing my mind because you'd watch him play and
you'd go, oh, man, gosh, this Clippers team is really
good sometimes, you know, and they've got multiple guys that
could throw Lebron, although it doesn't really matter, you know.
I mean, Lebron is still gonna get his um. But
the David's the counter if you're a Lakers fan, was
always Who's garden Davis? And I think in a playoff
series it's different. And you know, even with a Bacca,
who I just liked better for them offensively, because Tras
(26:54):
is a pick and roll catch guy. And you can
even see in some of the Lakers minutes where they've
let him kind of like, hey, we give you the contract,
we'll give you some post touches. Go ahead, go nuts, kid,
and you're like, well, okay, maybe that's why we don't
do that that much. But there's such a negative you know,
just the vibe around the Clippers are so negative that
I think people are kind of letting that overshadow the
fact that it's still a really good team. Yeah. I
(27:14):
mean Milwaukee hits everything they throw last night against Miami. Um,
if you if a record twelve guys right the other
the honest little brother hit one. You're like, okay, I
just I don't even know what to do with that one. Um,
what does he get caught? They were like, hey, so
your brother resigned U. That's probably that's probably the there's
(27:35):
probably a Joe Smith in the drawer deal. They were like,
we're gonna sign your star see you to two six
million dollars and we will promise to keep your brother
in law. How'd you like to be the brother? I mean, yes,
you made the NBA, but technically you only really made.
Both brothers only made the NBA because their brother was
coming up for a contract. I would love to know
how that story would play out differently, Like Luke Nard
(27:56):
had a younger brother named Toby d and then he
like a two way with with the G League, Like
would that go over well? You know, like I think,
be honest, because he's foreign, and it's like, look at
these guys are hilarious. Um, yeah, anyway, I don't know.
I just think it's it's kind of funny that the
Lakers had a brother and then Milwaukee kept the brother
and then you know, the Nicks were like, is there
(28:18):
anyone else? And there is, but you know, it's it's
just kind of funny that even at the NBA level,
you're like, let's have a guy in the roster just
in case the guy wants to make a free h
decision at this impact of what you know, And honestly,
when you think about fourteen fifteen guys, it doesn't even matter.
It does not it does not matter. Ryan Roussilo is
our guest here on the Doug Outlet Show. Download the
Ryan Rissilo podcast you can get more out of these
(28:41):
of these genius caliber takes. Um, we're getting ready for
We're getting we're getting ready for Week seventeen of of
the NFL. Look that it's a I'm intrigued by what
Pittsburgh does, Like I guess I'm supposed to be a
Mason Rudolph guy because we went the same Alma monit
and I think he's a I thought he was a
hell a college player. I didn't think he was a
(29:01):
good pro prospect, and that's played out as much. On
the other hand, the last time we ever discussed Mason
Rudolph ever was when they played Cleveland and and and
when you know, he gets into a fisticuffs with Cleveland's
best defensive lineman and he supposedly said drops an end
bomb that nobody heard, and we didn't hear about until
(29:21):
a week later. Um, the Browns defense is not very good.
The Steeler's offense hadn't been very good until Big Ben
decided to throw the ball downfield last week. Steelers Brown's
your expectations are what Steelers' movie football until they started
calling him the eyes on everybody. And it was actually
really good point by Romo where you go, you know,
(29:42):
you don't need to complete them, but you had to
take some shots because no one ever throws a flag,
you know, a couple of yards off the line of scrimmage.
You know, you're allowed to get a little physical there.
And then when it's out space, everybody can see it,
you know, it's a different deal altogether. You know what
I love about the Pittsburgh story is that you know,
I was defending him because, like, you know, Washington is
actually better on defensive First, I was like, hey, they're
bad team, and defensive numbers for bad teams can be
(30:03):
were like, hey, we're number one against the past because
you're down twenty one nothing and everybody stops passing. But
Washington made me change my mind. The Cincinnati Lass, I go, okay,
maybe they maybe they are exploited, like we knew their flaws,
but how do you go from eleven and oh to
now eleven and four, which would have been the first
time that had ever happened. And as I'm watching that
Colts game, it's like, well, you know, we've had three
(30:23):
games in twelve days and our five that's switched around.
And then you're like, okay, these are real excuses, I guess,
And it's what I would say if I were a
diehard Stealers fan. I didn't want to admit that what
I was seeing was not nearly as good in the
last month. And then you go, okay, so what happens
when you come back from the buy in the three
and twelve days doesn't affect you anymore, you know. So
that's why I always think about excuses, like everybody has them.
(30:45):
Do you want to use them or not? Do you
want to have that get in the way off you're
executing something. So you know, the defense statistically still holds
up with everyone. We know they can't run the football
short yards good luck. I don't know if ben are
gonna start chucking a deep all over the place, but
the Browns have felt like a more complete team and
I can't I shouldn't necessarily say that because that's two is.
Defense is so good, But there's there's times the Browns
(31:08):
where I know they can at least look multiple on
offense if they have any of their receivers. And the
problem with that Jets game, like I don't know what
to do with that. It's like watching the MAVs without prozingis,
Like we could break it all down, but it doesn't
really mean anything until prozingis is back there and let
me see what it looks like when the Browns are
missing all of their top four receivers. I can't even
get mad at you for blowing a game to the
(31:28):
Jets who actually been playing a little bit harder the
last couple of weeks. Yeah, it's weird though. I Cowherd
made a great point. He's like, hey, welcome to Sam
Donald's world, Baker Mayfield, that's what it's like to be
Sam Donald. Every week he found a way to still
compliment Donald and criticized Baker. Yes, now that's not the Cowherd.
I know. I'm sure you're having some some illegal soare
(31:50):
for New Year's Eve. I'm taping at eight am on Friday,
so trying not to get arrested by Gavin Newsom of

does it hurt Clemson? We discuss on The Doug Gotlum Show.

Doug Gotleap Show, You're on Fox Sports Radio. I hope
you guys are getting ready for a safe and happy
new year. Can't wait to be with you for another year.
Fox Sports Radio. It's been awesome, just fantastic. Let's get
(32:55):
to the press, the press, M Bryan family. What he got, Yeah, Doug.
So let's start with what's going on with that Clemson
football team. They have just announced the school offensive coordinator
Tony Elliott will not be able to be on the
sidelines at the Sugar Bowl for the college football semifinal
(33:18):
because of COVID nineteen reasons now to be clear, the
school has not specified whether he tested positive or it's
a high risk close contact, but he's not going to
be in for the semifinal. And how big of an
issue do you think this could play? How big of
an issue do I think it would be? Yeah? I
(33:40):
mean I think it look's a big issue. It's a
big now for bowl games, for playoff games. Most of
these programs are kind of prepared for it on some
level because, um, you know, this is the time of
year when when coordinators get recruited off the staff and
get offered jobs off staff. Obviously it hasn't happened with Clemson. Um,
it's a big deal. It helps. You have Trevor Lawrence
(34:01):
and maybe the challenges of Trevor Lawrence to you know,
can he can he help with the staffing. The game
plan has already been put in. This is gonna come
down to some decisions that are made. It does help
the Dabbo Sweeney has an offensive background as born wide
receivers coach, but I definitely think it changes things just
a bit. According to Pete Fambele of Yahoo, the early
(34:22):
expectation is Brandon street Or, who was the QB coach
and pass game coordinator, will step in, and there was
a lot of hope that Elliott will be able to
take part in the College Football Championship Game on January eleven,
with that obviously giving it more time from what What's
what's interesting about Clemson is most of their players tested
positive in the preseason and some people thought like it
(34:44):
was basically during doing her community. Turns out, you know,
it then becomes, uh, you know. And by the way,
Brandon Suitter just you if you're aware, I mean he
was passing. He was a quarterback at Clemson back in
the nineties of people remember that name. Um he started
I think his last two seasons and uh and I
(35:06):
think they won the peach boy played in so um.
You know, he's he's it's not like he's a rookie
and it's not like he doesn't understand things, not like
they just found some dude off the streets to start
calling place. Yeah, Doug. New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has
been very verbal about his love for the Buffalo Bills,
(35:26):
and ward has gotten out that they're going to host
a playoff game in the wild card round, and Cuomo
and the New York State Commission have agreed to allow
about six d fans to show up at Bill Stadium.
No fans have been to any of the regular season games.
Everyone that shows up for this contest must take a
(35:46):
COVID nineteen test. Yeah, they haven't taken a couple d
I don't understand what they don't do it the day
of and do the you know. And by the way,
if you have to take a test, if you take
a test, and you pass it. Why only six thousand people.
There's lots of things that don't make sense. It's open air,
but ever, you're probably wearing something around your face anyway,
if it's in Buffalo in the middle of winter. So,
(36:07):
but some fans is better than no fans. And really,
if you watch any of these games with limited fans,
those fans scream and are crazy, and there is some there.
There has been noise at some of these games, no
question about it. Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray, after some
debate whether he would play would he not in Week
seventeen with that lower leg injury, he says he is
(36:28):
going to play against John Ramos's Rams the Cardinals in
a must win situation week seventeen to get into the playoffs. Interesting, interesting, Interesting, Well,
look he's gonna get a good it's John Wafford on
the other side. Look, the number you need to know
is Sean mcves seven no against the Cardinals, and you
know you if you can beat him with John Wafford,
(36:50):
who has never started a game in the NFL and
played in the a F you can beat him with
kind of anybody. And I also I like this Rams team.
If they can get the playoffs. You know, even if
Jared us playing through a surgical apparent dumb. I I
do because their defense and they're voted to run the football.
Dwayne Haskins might be a free agent. He went unclaimed
off waivers after getting released by the Washington football team,
(37:12):
but according to NFL Network insider Ian Rappaport, some teams
are already thinking about courting him and bringing them to
their rosters, including the Carolina Panthers. Well, I mean, if
you take a look at a guy who's who's cheap,
you know, then you then that's you know what, do
(37:32):
you want to Dwayne Haskins not not in his rookie contract?
Do you want Dwayne Haskins for nothing? Yeah? I take
a look, and I think that's where Caroline is. The
Jets have placed Frank Gore on I R with a
bruise long. You know his stats. He's thirty eight years old,
sixteen thousand yards rushing, third in the NFL in the
history of the league. Is he done or he's done?
(37:57):
And can we stop with the he's a Hall of
Famer talk. It's not the Hall of been there for
a long time, been really really good. Now I know
that throughout his career, I think he's had somewhere like
eight or nine, like nine thousand yards seasons, which is incredible.
He was never he's never been considered the best running
(38:17):
back in the league ever. Ever. He's a good player,
he's a great He's a great football dude. He's not
a Hall of Fame back. He's just not. Finally, Doug,
it seems that all signs are pointing to Taylor Heineke
starting for the Washington football team in a week seventeen. Well, look,
(38:38):
he knows the system. He was in Carolina. He was
he was doing some grad school stuff, do you before
he got the call to come back and play for
Ron Rivera. So it sucks for Alex Smith that he
couldn't take a team to the playoffs in his comeback,
But maybe he gets to play in the playoffs and
out there and pressed that the press. This is the
Doug Otlip Show on Fox Sports Radio. Um, we got
(39:01):
Oklahoma taken on Florida. Later on tonight. I like Oklahoma.
Big in that game, Big in that game. Tomorrow, Dan
Patrick Show and the Doug Gotlib Show, Double dip. You'll
get tired of me. I'm already tired of you. This
