Doug Gottlap Show, Fox Sports Radio. I hope you're having
a great day enjoying the heat of summer. David Tarbus
gonna join us in twenty minutes. We'll chat about hoops.
Of course that's a little do we chat about hoops? Um.
(00:48):
Dennis Crousey will join us next hour. He's the Milwaukee
Bucks radio analysts, So I can't wait. I'm very excited
to talk to to Dennis crowd uz and and to
David Thorpe. Um. The the Janice alley oop is that's
(01:09):
the iconic play of this of this is the Janice
block and alley oop are the It's amazing, really right,
Like you have three things about Janice maybe four statistically dominant,
the block of a dunk which changed one of their wins,
and the alley dunk that he caught which made a
(01:31):
one point game at three point game. Now there is
the other part where it's the free throws, which are
ridiculously bad and getting worse, not getting better. But they
are getting rebounds off of the off of the misfree throws,
offensive rebounds off the misfree throws. Um. I heard someone
say earlier today that free throws are overrated, and it's
(01:56):
one of the less educated comments you're going to hear.
It doesn't mean that the Bucks haven't survived despite their
ineptitude from their star player at the free to line,
and that the Lakers we're able to overcome Shaquie O'Neil
(02:16):
at the free to line. But if if you know basketball,
the number one thing you want is layups. The number
two thing you want is free throws. Number three things
you want is corner Three's like, that's how analytics sort
of work. Right. Free throws actually in many people believe
it is number one. The clock has stopped. You said
(02:38):
your defense, and most players in the NBA shoot north
of s from the field. There aren't many wide open layups,
especially within the half court set. You have defense. The
free throw is an incredibly efficient play for both ends
of the floor. The idea that people are trying to
sell you that free throws aren't important is laughable what
(03:01):
it says to me. And this is a guy who
when I once I got to college, I became a
poor free throw shooter. Is it only shows how good
you have to be at everything else. Shack was a
terrible free throw shooter. Shack can try and tell us
he made him when accounted, but you know, the numbers
actually belied that he might have made him slightly more
(03:23):
than normal, but he didn't make him when they counted.
But it only points out how dominant Shack was, how
dominant Janice is, how dominant Tim Duncan was, That they
could be poor free throw shooters and still win multiple
NBA championships and potentially honest is first like it actually
(03:45):
in owner for Jannice to win a championship, he has
to block a dunk, he has to catch an alley you,
he has to get an offensive rebound, he has to
have two other teammates bail him out with jump shots
because he's struggling with his own. Look, your margin for
r has just made much more slight, much more slight.
(04:10):
I think it's the whole thing is a fascinating, fascinating series.
And you know what's interesting, I mean, everybody loves Monty Williams.
I was actually a buddy mind Jordan Cornett. We were
having a cocktail last night and we were talking about
Monty because he's a Notre Dame guy. We Jordan's played
four years of Notre Dame and then broadcast Notre Dame.
I played one year Notre Dame. Like anybody who's ever met,
(04:32):
anybody who knows Monty Williams loves Monnie Williams. And he's
a very very good coach. And Mike Budenholzer has taken
more darts from the media then most anybody in the
NBA as a coach, and yet here he is forty
eight minutes away from winning a championship. We'll get to
(04:55):
an Aaron Rodger story and what came out of the
weekend up coming next by what your Yeah, No, I was.
I was gonna ask you because I asked George Rice
stir this. We were talking about it yesterday. It was
it was a topic on a show. I shouldn't say.
I asked George. For as great as the Drew Holiday
strip was, you were just talking about free throws, I wondered,
(05:19):
and you would have a better thought of this than
anybody as a point guard. Did he make the right
play up one to throw it to Janice on the alley?
Like it worked out in the end for the Bucks,
But I argue that it probably wasn't the right play,
and even if Janice catches it and dunks it, it
(05:39):
still may not be the right play because you give
Phoenix the basketball back with more time than maybe they
would have. But I just I don't know if he
made the right play. It worked out great for Milwaukee
because then he missed the free throw on the Bucks
got the rebound, and then they had to fool again.
Like it worked out spectacular for Milwaukee, But in that instance,
I don't know if he actually made the smart back
(06:00):
scootball play in throwing that lunest. I believe he did.
And I'll tell you why. The rule is always if
you can get a layup, take the layup right when
you're holding the ball. When you get a layup, take
the lay up, because remember, like an eight percent free
throw shooter does not mean that you're gonna make two
(06:22):
free throws eighty percent of the time. It means you're
gonna make one free throw eighty percent of the time, right,
like we all think, like we all well, you know,
like we all think, well, well, he's a free throw shoot,
he misses his first, he's gonna miss a second. Like, No,
that's not actually how it works, Okay. It means he's
got a fifty percent chance of making the first one,
and he's got a fifty percent chance of making the
second one. You know. Yes, some guys you see the
(06:44):
first one go in and they relaxed, they make the
second one. You missed the first one, and they can
compound each other. I you know, if you watch it,
and I tweeted out, there's a there's a super slow
mo focused on him and drew where he gets the ball,
and then he appears to look up at the clock
to see time and score. And then he looked and
(07:07):
saw where Chris Paul was and where Janice was, and
Janice pointed up, and I think he knew time and score,
he knew a foul was coming, and he thought he
had an easy two, and he threw it. And I
thought it was the right decision. I would have done
the exact I feel like I would have done the
exact same thing, even though I was and and and
not because I was a poor free throw shooter, but
that that would have that would have helped the decision make.
He did do a great job in making Chris Paul commit,
(07:31):
Like he shifted his body weight. Paul was kind of
trying to play the middle, and then it looked like
Holiday was going to maybe pull out because he just
kind of kind of just drifted towards the sideline. And
so then Paul ended up committing to Holiday, thinking I'm
gonna have to go and follow him, and then at
that moment through the hoop, which allowed Chris Paul to
(07:51):
not get to Janice in time, where even if Chris
Paul was there, he could have fouled Janice in a
way where now you're at the free throw line and
Jannice is they're shooting two when you're only up by
one if he missed the dunk or you know, and
that was another thing. But I but but Holiday did
a really good job in luring I think Chris Paul
to at least get him to shift his momentum towards Holiday,
which allowed Paul then to be late to get to
(08:14):
Janice You're exactly right there. You gotta make him commit, right, Yeah,
you have to. Otherwise if if he throws it up,
he just maybe pushes Jannie out of the way. There's
no way they're calling that a flagrant in anyway, be honest.
Then goes to the free throw a lot and you're
saying you threw the ball to Nice up one with
thirteen and a half seconds left in the game, Like,
what are you? You know, what are you doing? So
I just I thought it was interesting because everything went
(08:36):
their way. And last year, if you're remember in the Bubble,
there was a game where Game seven between Denver and Utah,
and Denver got a steal and Jamal Murray passed it
to Tory Craig and he botched the layup and then
Mike Condly got the ball and was able to get off.
I absolutely remember the play, actually remember the play, but
it was still the right at that To answer your question,
(08:57):
I believe it's still and that's because the result, because
of the process and Tory Craig's play, they were up
to so they could have gone up four. That was
the difference in what happened on Saturday night was it
was a one point game in that scenario where no
matter what, Phoenix is still getting the ball back. Luckily
for Milwaukee, they got the three point play on Janice
mr the free throw and then got the rebounds, so
(09:17):
by the time Phoenix got the ball back and ended
up being a four point play or a four point game,
and Phoenix kind of needed the two possessions. But it
was just interesting in the moment because at home, I'm like,
oh my goodness, run out the clock, and then I
saw him throw it up and Janice catch it and
dunk it, and then knew there was a foul. So
you were excited, like, yes, this could be, you know,
sealing the fate. But in those militants of a second
(09:40):
as the ball exactly, that's what were you. And I said,
maybe if Holiday just even took two more seconds to dribble.
But your point about the free throws is correct, and
he's only shot like sevent in the in the uh
the playoffs. He shot about seventy during the regular season.
But yeah, that's especially in that situation. It is not
(10:02):
a given like look at Chris Middleton. Middleton only made
one of two the team's best free throw shooters, So no,
it's It's it's crazy. How bad is Phoenix at boxing
out on these free throws out? Like, what are you doing?
You got a box out of the shooter. It helps
when it was short on the rim too, and then
you have to kind of ricochet and you, you know,
like you have your reflex, your reflex, and then Janice
is able to tip it back. And if Chris Paul
(10:24):
would have stayed back instead of collapsing at the ball,
he maybe would have been there too to body up Middleton.
I'm not blaming Chris Paul, but now you shouldn't have
been in there. Ye should have been in there. You
you put your three best rebounders in there. That's not
Chris Paul, So I mean just went over his head.
Now he wasn't eating box out, but again that's not
that I don't that's not as much on him as
(10:45):
it as it normally would be. Be sure to catch
the live edition of The Doug gott Leap Show week
days at three p m. Easter noon Pacific on Fox
Sports Radio and the I Heart Radio a app. We're
getting closer and closer Doug out Them show here on
Fox Spoor TRADEEO. So, do we have an Aaron Rodgers story, right,
(11:06):
because last year's offseason was Dak Prescott. Right, well, Dak Prescott,
and we didn't really have much of a story with
Dak Prescott, but it was one that we covered. This
summer or this offseason story has been Aaron Rodgers. Um,
it will be interesting to see if he goes to
the Bucks game six He's gotta go, right, doesn't he
(11:27):
have to? Like you're and I don't know what percentage
he actually threw into the pot to be a Bucks owner,
but doesn't he have to go? Isn't that the Bucks
win a championship if they win Tuesday Night? This is
this should be the progression of events. You ready for it.
(11:48):
I'm gonna hit you with this, buyer, what do you
you're you're we're both born in Wisconsin. You were actually
raised in Wisconsin. Here's what should happened. Aaron Rodgers should
go to the Bucks game with his fiancee, cheer like
crazy they win, Okay, not say anything, go to the
(12:08):
victory parade and then go up to uh, go to
the mic and do the Jimmy chitwould I think it's
time I started playing What do you guys think that
would be that would be pretty That would be amazing.
There wouldn't be a person on earth that would be
like that. Wasn't a was a bather move like just
(12:30):
due Jimmy chitwould You know, his absences has been noticeable
because two years ago he was all over. He was
he was there. I mean that he would follow Wisconsin
basketball when they were in the n C Double A Tournament.
Aaron Rodgers was the guy that you would see follow
It was was at games when they made it to
the Eastern Conference finals against the Raptors. So him not
being there for any of this run was pretty telling.
(12:54):
And only recently he's been starting to tweet about the Bucks,
which is a little bit more than he had been
doing previously, but it's pretty noticeable. Maybe maybe what could
happen is David Bactieri could chug a beer and then
like John Cena, Rogers comes out of the tunnel and
then chugs his own beer and then five ser for
hum would go nuts. Would be amazing, Like there's so
(13:17):
many fun things they could do with it with this deal,
you know where he could he could appear out of nowhere.
That would be it. That would be amazing. I I
counted because I just I find it so funny. It's
my home state, and I know it's they're my people.
But I counted at least three Aaron Rodgers Jersey Slash
T shirts during Game four, and I just thought to myself, like,
(13:39):
you're going to Game four the NBA Finals and you're like, yeah,
I'm wearing my Rodgers T shirt. Like think about that,
Like you don't have a Bucks T shirt. You're not
gonna get one at the game. But they love the Packers.
They love their guys, and they love Aaron Rodgers and
so it's it's it's like, I'm not that guy, and
I don't think you're that guy either, and you know,
even with the Seahawks, but the fact that those people
(14:00):
exist in our society, Like I love my Packers, Yeah,
I love I told you. I was in Which Time
over the weekend and Fred VanVleet was there and um,
and I'm trying to think, you know, Ron Bakers like
the GM of the team, and like you're talking to
people and they just love their Shockers like that's and
they're like, man, really excited about this year's team. What
(14:21):
do you think. I'm like, it's July sixte ma'am. Uh,
you know, we haven't even had the NBA Draft yet.
I haven't even gotten the Big twelve. What only American?
You know? Let's uh, yes, I think they're amazing. That's
the only responsible answer. But the point is I'm with you,
(14:43):
Like who goes to a Bucks NBA Finals game, Like
you're gonna take a picture, by the way, because everybody
take a picture, Like, yeah, we went to the Bucks
Finals game, Like you knows me where my Aaron Rodgers jersey.
It's my good luck jersey. Every time we wanted, we
ever war, we won. I I've said that he's mistaken.
If he thinks he's gonna get booed, there is no
(15:03):
way that he would get booed if you was there.
They love him, they do. They they would they would
blame good A Conster, They would blame Mark Murphy. If
he shows up, they would cheer him because if they
boo him then they probably know, oh man, that was
not really going to come back. They would absolutely give
him an ovation if he was there. Some Mercedes Lewis
over the weekend says like, yeah, doesn't know for a fact,
(15:24):
but things will be there on time. There continues to
be more discussion about that seems to be some momentum building.
I will get to get to David Thorpe in a
second from true. Be sure to catch the live edition
of the Doug Gottlieb Show weekdays at three pm Easter
noon Pacific level pro level workout and stuff. Um. But
by the way, this is a small aside because I
(15:44):
know how close you are with him. But I'm also
I know Israeli basketball Amri Casspy retired and it was
just announced I think yesterday David. For people who don't
know why that's a big thing in the sports, especially internationally,
is well, he's the Lebron James of Israel. And yes,
it uh close U portually. He actually called me over
(16:09):
the weekend and I didn't even see it and he
but luckily he left me two really nice messages before
he maybe announced men wanted me to know he and
I spent many men a decade plus together. Uh. He
was the first ever Israeli be drafted in the first round.
He lasted ten years, which is extremely meaningful when you
consider uh he was. He was unlucky enough to play
(16:29):
for two of the worst franchise in special sports history,
with the Kings and the UH and Cleveland, and I
think once you to go four or five years just
barely hanging on with terrible franchises, you kind of get Brandy.
He's played for a lot of bad coaches, but he
he's one of the most talented players at six foot
time I've ever seen in my life, and one of
the most enthusiastic guys that every no matter how bad
(16:51):
his team was, he competed so hard. I have a
million stories about him. But he's a really loving guy
and and sent a lot of Israeli players to me.
In fact, been a very good young pro coming this
week because of all me. He's just he's set me
so many players very very talented and as talented because
he knows that uh they know he wants them to
be exposed to the way we play here and everything.
(17:13):
He's really he's great for the game. He's going to
go on to do a big, big thing. So yeah,
it was very sad to see it, but he went
out as the champions from MC COPI tele Aviv, which
is where he began his career as a teenager, so
it worked out pretty good for him. Yeah, it's it's
really amazing and and if you have him in to Israel,
like Israel loves basketball the way that Indiana and North
(17:34):
Carolina love basketball. Right, and but but they just they've
never had one of they hadn't had one of their own,
you know, drafted and playing the league until him. And uh,
it's it's it's remarkable. All right, let's let's get to
the let's let's when do you think the series turned cool?
Great question? I I wrote about this actually going into
(17:57):
games three. Um, the Bucks started playing the two use
of coach buds words more randomly. They weren't so easy
to to kind of spot what they were doing. They
started doing this in game two a little bit. The
Phoenix just shot so well from three making forty that
they the Bucks, and the Bucks didn't shoot great, and
so they lost. But they I thought after Game two,
(18:19):
and I don't know if I said it on your shows,
that you might have been out. I said, are a
lot of shows that this series reminded me of the
Raptors Buck series of a couple of years ago. I
thought the better team lost the first two games on
the road and thought that they could get hot. I
didn't predict that they would definitely do it. It's hard
to win four or five against a great team, my Phoenix,
but it's the series reminded me of that exact series.
(18:39):
And and so thenest the way the Bucks have played,
which is freeing up yanness for as the cutter and
screener unless there's a one on one run, the half
back dive up the middle play. Their offense got better.
And then the other thing is that the Bucks have
gotten better and better at guarding Phoenix. Is stuff they've
turned Phoenix which I ran an offense I called the
Easy Day Cup, and they made lots of easy passes.
(19:01):
They attacked from all over the court. They have eight
different players shoot eight or more times a game, and
they weren't just one hero centric offensive team and the
Bucks to turn them into just the Devin book her show. Uh,
look at the last game. The Sun shots phenomenally thirteen
of nineteen, which is one less attempt at three in
(19:22):
this game, and how many they made, which was twenty
in game two. That's not just Phoenix settling or whatever. No,
that's Milwaukee taking their best three point looks away and
forcing them to take contents to too. That's great defense
by Milwaukee. How is Milwaukee doing this despite their free shooting. Ya,
I mean, and all that adds up, right, they shot,
they themselves shot very well. This last game. They've defended well,
(19:45):
they're winning the possession game. It's really mass they they
they've cut the sun three point shooting. Although thirteen of
nineteen is so phenomenal, there wasn't thirty five attempts or
forty attempts like before. Uh, They're they're making them take
more suffer shots there turn them all over less than Phoenix.
If you look at the way the series has gone
after the first game, and they're killing him on the glass,
so by getting more possessions and being more efficient with
(20:06):
those possessions, even with that free throws and the and
you listen, these last two games have been very very
close games, which is why honestly does the series distance
ober the I rewatched the game twice this morning. There's
so many plays that almost worked for Phoenix. Of course
you can say the same from Milwaukee too, but the
game was very much in job at the very end,
and Milwaukee is cable of shooting very poorly. And if
(20:28):
they do, and Phoenix may continue to make the progress,
they may turn the ball over lessons and reboundings, better
on their on the defensive end. Uh, if Peenix can
come out and win the game. Um, okay, what happened
in the What happened in the second quarter to the Bucks?
To the Suns? They had such a big lead, they're
playing so well. What happened in Game five? It's actually
exactly what we broke down on our show this morning.
(20:50):
I watched it the five of you know. You know
this as a player and a coach, You've heard it
a million times. Coaches always say first five minutes, first
five minutes, which first five minutes at every quarter normally
is for a five minutes of the half. In college,
the first five minutes of quarter two, I call it
Q two. The Bucks a race as sixteen point lead,
and Janice didn't play. It was Brook Lopez playing incredible
(21:11):
defense at the rim. Uh, making Tory Craig what looked
like he had a pretty easy lamp to start the
quarter barely hit the iron because the way Lopez played defense,
and then Lopez races down the court makes an eight.
Put the float in the paint. Our big men today
are amazing at the touch they have compared to what
you how big men used to play. It's Chris Paul
going under the screen and give up a Holiday three.
(21:32):
And then he goes over the screen as he should,
and Brook Lopez gives him a little extra pop in
my opinion, probably an offense the foul, and that gives
Holiday to a little space to knock in. That three
turnover leads for a Lopez sunk. It's just little things.
And they didn't guard j crowd on one possession. Bobby
Porter's went first siege if you remember, missed the by
a mile, and and uh, what's what's the kids? They
(21:56):
missed the crowd of missing the wide open three, and
then they well our tory. You may not seem to
worry break anymore, Doug, because book Wellpetz wouldn't leave the
paint against him, and Greg went over to they looked
pretty bad, and so Phoenix just got cold for a
few minutes when Milwaukee got red hot, and boom, the
game suddenly gots high. I thought, those five minutes are
(22:16):
what we're all gonna remember if Milwaukee cakes care visiness
tomorrow night, because when you're down sixteen against Penis on
the road, you can't be chasing that team for long.
If you can't come back quickly. I think you're in
a lot of trouble. But they did, and that's why
they're up three two. Uh. David Torfe joining us True
Hoop stug Otlip Show here on Fox Sports Radio. Um, okay,
when Drew gets the steel, right, and there were other
(22:39):
players that that were made, but he gets the steel
and I thought, I tweeted this. I thought, what was
amazing is he takes the dribble and then he looks
up and it felt like he checked time and score
and then he saw Jani's pointing up and then he
threw the lob um. We were having discussion earlier on
whether or not it was the right I understand based
upon the result it was the right play. I thought
(23:00):
it was right based upon process. If you can get
a layup, you always take it. If you can get
a dunk, you always I'm taking him, especially with what
with Janice, Was that the right play though, to throw
the alum? Well, I think you've just described it perfectly. Dog.
Every every coach is asking him that same question because
it's something you talked to your team about. H my
son's the point guard in college and and if he's
(23:21):
got a guy like the honest racing the chord at
the end of the game, where you really just make
sure you don't underthrow him, because you can't overthrow guys
like Janice Combo. And I thought, Drew, just you go
at the end. I like players to be given the
chance for the coaches to make a play. So he
made a playoff Booker to get this seal. He left
Chris Paul wide open. That's the mistakes Devin Booker mate Devin.
(23:42):
As soon as Devin sents that extra person coming, he
should have jumped off and tried to pass the ball.
How they made that play and then he got greedy,
which I loved in basketball, and he went to go
make a second place. If he dribbles out and he
gets fouled, maybe makes both three pills and they go
up three. But like that percentage compared to finishing a
lot over Chris Paul, that's DeAndre eating back. I say,
don't throw the lot, but that was Chris Paul. There
(24:04):
was no chance unless you underthrow. But thick of how
significant of thunder throw it, I can't six Chris Paul.
So I thought that I thought Drew made there. I
just what you described you. I thought I made the
right read. I think they'd go mad. I don't know.
You can look it up. Five d times be seen
practicing games over the course of just this one season.
I thought it was low hanging proof for Drew because
(24:25):
honest is just that kind of athlete. Yeah. No, I
means it's crazy. It's such great hands, such long arms,
and and it's it's not like it's the first time
all game you throw ll you. Um So, I coached
in tbt okay and the first day we're down twenty
three late in the third nineteen with six and change
(24:46):
to go, we come back and win. Wow. Yeah, it
was great. And I and you and I have talked
about being up twenty on on how that's it's almost
a lock, amortal lock to to win the game. Um So,
then last night we a that eber Line drive and
they're just loaded. They got better, more depth, better dudes,
better coaching, et cetera. We can't make a shot, they
(25:09):
can't miss. We were just dead on our feet and
we couldn't say they shot eighty in the first half.
I kid you not. I kept the statue anyway. Um
Vince Lambarti has that the old adage fatigue makes cowards
of us all? Is it? Do you think it's fatigued
with Chris Paul? Is it a numbers game? Because I
(25:30):
thought one of the reasons he played so well in
Game one was he hadn't played that much. They only
played five games in a month. Everybody else is on fumes.
Now he's dealing with the same level of fatigue as
everybody else in the series. And he's been he's been
a thirty six year old point guard. How much of
it is fatigue? How much of it is Drue? Give
me your thoughts on what's happened to Chris Paul after
(25:51):
that dominant Game one performance. Yeah, well, I think you're
exactly right. For Game one, we we did. We looked
at up. He had played four games in twenty two days.
So that's the hugest fans for himsecarity do I mean
the whole Phoenix team was more rest in Milwaukee in
Game one? And to think about it this way, after
that game, other than the Phoenix twenty or forties three
point game, which no one's going to beat them when
they go from three, Milwaukee has already won a championship
(26:14):
absent that incredible shooting by Phoenix. Uh and so I
think the big adjustment Coach but made after Game one
is he pretty much put Drew on Chris Paul full time,
picking it up basically full court. And he's the best
on ball defender I think in the world right now.
If you could look at some of the really long
guys like a Ben Simmons and Kauaide. But I'm talking
(26:37):
about picking up fet for for basically a whole game
against the starting guard. I think Holiday is the best.
And everything that he does defensively, uh and his length
and I coach Drew coming out at U c l
A for the draft, and I thought he was a
power forward um from the next down it playing point guard.
He's just it was eighteen years old and he was
this big, strong young man that knew how to play
(26:59):
this pale and under control, and I thought he was
gonna be an incredible player. And and defensively he is that.
Offensively he's good. I mean, he's not the world's player.
He's good, please a good player me at a great game.
But defectively he's a monster. And I think he is
just better than Chris Pauls already six year years old,
given that it's been a long season. Would you would
that give you pause in re up and with Chris
(27:23):
Paul for three years of like a hunter Mion, Oh sure,
I mean you have to. You have to to me
as as a as a as an executive, You've got
to think the really big picture of value are you.
Are you keeping him because you just made a great run,
or you're going to key keep him pay him because
the value you get for what he brings is better
(27:43):
than what you're actually paying him. And I think I
think they're probably spend less money and bring in a
player that can do almost as much as he can
and then use that extra money to get more depth
or whatever, at least if your Phoenix. Anyway, Phoenix has
Phoenis has some very good young players. They have to
get a lot better. That's the only thing. You know.
Milwaukee has been so experienced at this level. Phoenix has
(28:06):
got Crowder and Paul and that's pretty much it. For
guys that have really experienced it, they'll be better, just
like Milwaukee has been better. I mean last year I
can count the bubble and all that happened in Kenosha.
I think this is the Bucks team we would have
seen last year had there not been a bubble um
stung from what happened the year before the Toronto I
feely resolved it in down to twice in this food
(28:27):
season and the forty eight minutes potentially from being champions.
Phoenix has gonna learned from this with a bunch of
good young a really good young players, especially eight and Booker,
But I like the other young guys too. Sage being
out has hurt them. He he is a legit plus
defender that can guard out on the perimeter as well
as inside, and they're getting beat up dug inside. I mean,
it's not just all the offensive glad. There's no one
(28:48):
when they go small Phoenix does. There's no one to
protect the rim, and Bonnie has to call time out
to get eight and back in the game. When the
Bucks guys just drived like Drew Howdy, just drives right
to the rim, there's no one that can contest. Yeah,
they and and they're so used to playing with atan
two that I think that that hurt someone. He's not
there is it has yet It's really hard to change
your defensive mentality. Um can Portland's put together enough to
(29:14):
make Damian Lillard not one out? I don't think so
I don't think so and and and and true hoops
that the our group broke the story that he was
going to ask for a trade with a meeting was set.
As you now know they have met. I don't know
what's happened at that meeting. We knew they were meeting. Uh.
And then you know we obviously broke that story. Uh.
(29:35):
He even if he they end up not treating him
now it's coming like he's he we we you know,
Henry Abbott wrote all this out. Damien has dropped so
many hints. And if you talk to the people that
we talked to that are like, for for example, people
involved between and you would say, no one in the
League of surprise Doug that Damien wants out. It is
not a surprise to anyone. I'm not judging right or wrong.
(29:59):
I'm simply saying this guy, he's not an extension. But
what happened, he was out. And so even if even
if you decide to hold on to him, how long
before you know he's gonna say it's just not good enough.
The league is loaded, like they're just talking a royal
freew teams next year. I think you I think you
trade when you can whenever. Whenever a good trade comes, uh,
whether it's the Bense demonstrator or some other trade out there,
(30:20):
there's plenty of opportunities. I think it'll make sense for
both parties to move on. I think that's what we'll
have happening at some point. Anyway, likelihood Team USA wins
the Goala. You know, I don't know enough about the
opponent yet. I will say I'm the last guy to
really care about how America does. I've spent a lot
of time overseas developing young players and young coaches, and
(30:42):
still do and still mentor lost of young coaches. I'm
proud that we've exported our game, going back to Jibby
Brown of Bobby Night in the seventies, right. Uh, I
love it. I think Team USA defense will be the
best in the tournament. I really think that team can guard. Unfortunately,
the three finals gonna be exhausted when they get there,
but they're plus defenders in the case of Holiday in
Middleton's Uh, you just have to they shoot great in
(31:05):
some of those games, and I don't know that they will,
so I don't think it's a great chance to win,
but I do think they'll do. America proud and I
think they'll play amazing defense. David Thorpe check his work

I probably sucked the first hour forty eight, but the
next our twelve You're ready, h Doug gottlie Shows on
Fox Sports Radio. I hope you had a great weekend.
Gets you ready for a good week NBA Finals tomorrow.
(32:36):
Let's get to what the Fox said every day, this
time the Doug Gottlieb Show. We'd like to play for
your portion of previous show and Fox Sports Trader Fox
Sports One. This was Colin Cowherd earlier today explaining why
the Bucks dynasty with Joannice as the face of basketball
could be exactly what the league needs. Here you have Joannis,
(32:58):
a defensive Player of the Year, a two time m
v P and probably Finals m v P by tomorrow night.
And that's just entering the last three years into the
data bank. And unlike old Lebron, Janice is not brand
obsessed like old brittle k D. He's not a wanderer,
(33:20):
nor is he bothered by social media or media criticism.
Unlike increasingly old and increasingly brittle Kyrie, He's not strange,
young and healthy, honest. Let's play word association, humble, grateful, healthy,
loyal focused. Is this the new dynasty? Is this the
(33:46):
new face of the Leak? It would be a very
different kind of superstar, not brand obsessed, not a wanderer,
healthy every night discourages ego. It looks it's fascinating to
see what the Bucks can do heading forward. A couple
(34:08):
of things, and this is really important. We do know
they haven't won the championship yet, right right? I mean
it's a very important note that you may not have
paid attention to sports over the weekend, but one thing
you did not misses the Bucks winning an NBA championship.
They won a game, They have a three games the
two series lead. They did not win a championship. So
(34:30):
before we put cart well out of horse, they gotta
win to the game. Secondly, why do we do this?
Why why do we every time a team wins the
championship we go like this could be the next dynasty.
Oh the Cubs winn of while the Monastors it could
be the next dynasty. Do you many things have to
go right? I mean, we're honest, Kyrie getting hurt, James
(34:52):
Harden being hurt. Otherwise the Bucks aren't here. My guess
is the Knicks continue to improve the let's have another
run or two in him and let's not even get
to the West. Would it be good for the league.
Of course, A guy who was taken was not taking
the top five of the NBA draft. In a draft
(35:14):
where people missed on, a bunch of dudes really comes through,
becomes the two time finals. MVP decides to stay in
a small market and wins the championship and unpacks emotionally
mentally as he has been unpacked. Would that be big
for the league? Yes, yes, it would. It would give
hope to the hopeless, that's what it would, you know,
(35:37):
to the Oklahoma Cities, to the Minnesota's, to the New
Orleans is of the world, to the Charlotte's, all of
those franchises which have forever thought we got no shot.
We gotta draft all these young guys and lock them
up to long term deals and just hope that they
don't tell us that they have to be traded right
then and there, now, get right? Um, Would he give
(36:03):
the hope to the hopeless? Yes, but one, they haven't
won the championship yet. To a dynasty would need multiple championships.
Do you know how hard that thing is? And three
we would be we would be diminishing the fact. He's like, well,
he's healthy. Well, he actually missed the last two games
of the Eastern Conference Finals with a knee injury. All
(36:27):
of that said, I love you honest, there's not there
is no information out there which caused me to go like, nah,
not the real deal. Nah, he's kind of a phony.
No all on the up and up, all on the
up and up, um, and he's not gonna get smaller.
He's always gonna be big. It stands the reason he
should can he should shoot the ball better. He can't
(36:49):
overcome the free throw yips because it's not like he's
there are some airballs, um, but for the most part
there online it's I think it's it's like half and
half physical and mental. I think it can be overcome.
But we're like, we're kidding ourselves if we don't realize
(37:11):
how competitive league is and how very fortunate they are
to be where they are. That's what the Fox said.
Doug gotlib show here on Fox Sports Tradio. Ramas, did
you go see the new Space Jam with your kids?
I did not. Lucas saw it on his own because
it's on HBO Max and we have that, so he
watched it on his own and he liked it. He
(37:33):
did like it. Yes, he liked the first Space Jam
as well. So yeah, it's designed for kids, so it
does feel like adults commenting on a movie design. It's like,
my dad, Colin used to have that show Sports Station, okay,
and my daddy school, Like, I don't like Colin show.
I love Colin, I don't like his show. And I
was like, well, you know it's not for you. It's like,
what do you mean, I'm a sports fan. It's on
(37:53):
a sports network. I was like, well, it's really a
clip show with videos and highlights and stuff. That's his
ign for like eighteen to thirty to eighteen forty nine,
not for an old man. That doesn't make any sense. Like, actually,
it does make sense. That's the space sham is not
designed for me or for you. It's designed for our
kids to fall in love with Michael Jordan now Lebron
(38:16):
James and Loony Tunes. That's it. I was designed for. Um,
what is or who is the most valuable player? How
do we determine that and decide that? I think we
all bring in kind of our own bias and baggage
(38:38):
and own definition. I think I can prove it to you.
But do that. Next The Doug Otlip Show, Fox Sports
