On the Thursday edition of The Best Of The Doug Gottlieb Show:  Doug predicts what he thinks is going to happen in game six of the NBA Finals as the Warriors go into Boston trying to close out the Celtics.  Doug takes issue with Celtics head coach Ime Udoka saying he thinks the team will go more with small ball in game six.

The Golden State Warriors have been getting some heat lately for having overspent for their current roster.  Doug doesn't understand the criticism, thinks the Warriors have played within the rules of the CBA and anyone who feels differently are just jealous.

Pat Mahomes was asked about Tyreek Hill's comments on his podcast about Tua Taglovailoa being a more accurate passer and that the Chiefs didn't give him enough respect as a playmaker.  Former Packers executive Andrew Brandt joins Doug to talk about the Deshaun Watson situation, what the Ravens will do with Lamar Jackson, and other major NFL business headlines this week.

(00:44):
we got a game six tonight, Right, game six tonight
NBA Finals should be fun. Hey, that's at nine Eastern.
What about the kids? Six specific time? That should be good?
Reminded the Dug got The Show is brought to you

Jason Tatum yesterday said this about his team and what
he thinks going into the game. I think just how
we respond. You know, it hasn't been easier. It has
been extremely tough. You know, we've had some tough losses.

(01:28):
You know, losing Game five against Milwaukee, you know, it
was extremely tough knowing that we had to win to
go on the road, and you know, losing Game six
against the Heat was extremely tough. But you know, in
those moments, we just responded. I don't know exactly, you know,
what it is, but you know, I think just our
will to want to win, you know, just trying to
figure it out. There's Emi Udoka, his head coach, and

(01:50):
some changes we might see tonight. I think small ball
has worked well for us, and you know, we obviously
like to get a little more out of Peyton and
and Derek than we didn't in the last game. But
Grant been a big part of what we've done as
well this year. So we know what they're trying to
do as far as who they're bringing in when we substitute,
and we can combat that with some line of changes
that we're looking at. Yeah, So the idea of of

(02:10):
small ball is fascinating, right because it was big ball
really which allowed them to win in Game three, um,
the three ball, but also the size in Game one
as well, and so kind of sitting there waiting and
your third win, all things are, you know, all all
things being equal, you've got to change something. But I

(02:33):
don't know if you want to play small ball against
the team that kind of brought small ball to the
championship discussion. Here's Steve Kerr and I thought this was
really insightful, the difference in close out games. I just
think this the n B A talented teams who had
talented players. You're going against, You're in somebody else's building.
It's just not easy to close anybody out in the playoffs.

(02:56):
So there's no common thread. We just we're gonna have
to play as Here's Draymond on his podcast about the Celtics.
It is a challenge mentally because you know, these guys
are super athletic, they are super young and fast and strong,
and you know, if a guy is faster than me,
how can I beat him to a spot. I have

(03:17):
to anticipate and I have to think. So I think
that's been huge in this series, but not as much
of a chess match as it is when you're playing Lebron,
who is dissect at every play in the computer of
his in real time. Like that's just a skill that
not many people possess. It doesn't compare to like mentally,
playing against Lebron James, who I think is arguably arguably

(03:39):
smartest guy to ever played this game, well, not one
of he's arguably the smartest guy to step foot on
the basketball court. And so to to say that it
compares to that, it's it's disrespectful to Lebron, and it's
it's a lie to you. Yeah what I And look,
you can take this a million different ways. The way
I hear it, the way it lands on me is one,

(04:03):
it's complete and utter respect for Lebron, But it's too
the reality of when you're young, you don't naturally think
as much. You just react and play, and that's probably
what's gotten these guys. And honestly, when they get when
they start thinking and they start slowing down and trying
to beat the defense, I don't think it's as artful

(04:25):
as Lebron. And I think that's a it's a fair
way to look at it. It's a fair way to
look at it. By the way, like you know, if
you say, if he says Lebron James the smartest guy
he's ever played against, So you're not at that level
of smart, doesn't mean you're dumb. It just this is
what we talked about yesterday. There is nuance there, There
is a gray area there. You can still be a

(04:45):
smart team but not compare. But I think he's right.
I mean, they're just you know, they're just kind of
in reactor stage. You know, when you're young, it's your
first time there. You don't necessarily know the ramifications of
missing a shot, shooting in air ball, blowing an assignment.
You know. I think I do think that Boston and

(05:08):
the complaining about the officiating from all of the players,
I think that takes them out of the out of
where they should be mentally. I do think the fact
that they're just kind of reacting and playing maybe doesn't
have them at that kind of peak level of where
they could be mentally. But I also think, you know,
part of this is also, you know, Draymond playing games.

(05:31):
You know, let's be honest, he knows everyone. Everyone is
paying attention to the at least the excerpts the cuts
from his his podcast and when the cuts come out,
and he said, well, you know, they're not really a
thinking team that's smart like Lebron. Now you you're trying
to get them to overthink. And there's an expression in

(05:52):
basketball when you think you stink. The Golden State Warriors
have not stunk the past two games. At times they stuck,
you know, I don't know. I think it's interesting the
idea of small ball from ema Udoka. It just feels
like a mistake to me. You know, a short term
when you put them in, you may get a little
bit of a bump, especially you're playing Peyton Pritcher. But

(06:13):
you're gonna play small ball against the team that wants
you to play small ball, Like, oh, I don't know.
You know, the when you when they've won, when they've
won games, they've dominated on the boards, they've dominated driving
the ball to the basket. I like small ball small
ball me personally, I do. I you know where your
weaknesses are. But I'm just telling you in the um

(06:39):
in in the reality, the reality of small ball against
the Warriors. Maybe they don't have the best small ball
lineup in the league anymore, but they've sure done it.
And played together and played that way more than anybody
else in the league historically, and I think that allows
them to play to their strengths. You take out your bigs,

(07:00):
you take out of Robert Williams, which I get you're
gonna have to, and you don't play replace them with
an Ol Horford who had six threes in your game
one win. Now it feels like you're playing into their strength. Yeah,
it's it's like playing against a team that runs and
you try and run with them, and you're like at halftime,
you're like, man, we're up ten points, we're up sixty

(07:20):
two to fifty two. But then you're not used to
scoring sixty two points in the first half. You hit
the wall in the second half. They're used to playing
that way every day. Be sure to catch live editions
of The Doug gott Leap Show weekdays at three pm
Eastern noon Pacific on Fox Sports Radio and the I
Heart Radio app. Sports Radio Welcome in. Obviously having a

(07:50):
little bit of computer issues. Um, you know, yeah, of
are all not a really really good day. Did you
guys see what Phil Mickelson did on the sixth hole? Right?
How would you? I don't even know how you describe
that welcome it stuck. Goatlap Show, Fox Sports Radio, coming

(08:10):
to you live from sunny southern California. UM, let's go
to Dan Buyer. Dan, would you how would you characterize
Phil Mickelson on the sixth hole? UM, I don't know.
I haven't seen it, so I'm sorry. He was he
was cutting downhill and uh, clearly misjudged the speed and

(08:32):
it kept rolling. It felt like he was still rolling
when he hit it back up the hill and then
he missed. He missed that putt by a good three
yards as well. Watching it now, the dreaded four putt
for Phil Michelson, Oh my goodness. Well, if he was
on the live Golf Tour, he at least wouldn't have

(08:52):
made the cut with that four part correct. There's there's
there's a lot of live golf. So so the one
that I thought was amazing was and I know that
Lee Westwood was up there. I'm trying to think who
else was up there? Did you see? They asked him
the question, They said, is there any place you wouldn't

(09:13):
anyone you wouldn't play golf for if they paid the
right amount? And then they asked him like, let's say
Putin throws a golf tournament and he's going to pay
ridiculous sums of money? Would you take it? And him
and Poulter? And then Polter's like, I that's hypothetical. I don't.
I don't deal with that. You're asking us hypothetical questions.

(09:34):
It's an easy answer, isn't it correct? Correct? I mean,
somebody goes they know it's like chess, they know the
move though, they know that if they say no, I wouldn't,
then they then they would counter with, well, what makes
this any different than so, like they know the road

(09:57):
that there was going down. It totally was a game
of chess. Yeah, I mean I I didn't didn't. Why
not say no, I would take You know, I'm a businessman.
Somebody wants to play golf. I go play golf. That's
how it works. Why not say that that's could have

(10:18):
could have been an option? Um, I don't know, Well
that would have been. I don't think that it's gonna be.
There's it's a no win, no win. I think the
only win they have, honestly is to go The best
win is just honesty. Just go, Like listen, if you
got to write for the Russian times, and they were
gonna triple your money. They were gonna give you the

(10:39):
type of money you'd literally never have to work ever again.
And you don't even necessarily have to be good at
what you're doing because you get paid regardless. Would you
do it? You can turn around the reporters and I say, yes,
I would, just because the amount of money. You know,
I don't know it was. It was an amazing press
conference to watch you just watching these guys, and you know,

(11:01):
and and they the answer is an easy answer like, Nah,
Putin's a little much. I don't think these guys, you know,
they didn't. You know, it's my opinion. I think it's different.
I threw it out on Twitter that do you have
a different feel watching these players? And I mean the
response has been overwhelming. I'm just that's why mystics. I've
been trying to keep up with the tweets. UM not

(11:22):
really a total facetious. I think one person has responded
to it. But I did have a different feel when
I saw Louis Stays and trying to, you know, hit
one out of the rough. I did have a different
feel watching Phil Mickelson, who has embraced his Hollywood Hogan
U n w oh sort of phase with this, Yes, yes,

(11:43):
like there there is a different feel in watching those guys,
and you I I do. I I think that as
a golf fan or maybe a PGA tour fan, that
there's a different feel in watching these guys. And Rommy
Rory is already great and mentioned yesterday. I know, he's
you know, he's so at the forefront of everything, and

(12:03):
he's you know, such a such an enormous voice in
the game. But like it even makes you want to
cheer for the guy even more, you know, And and
the other guys, it's it's different. It's it's easy to
cheer against Patrick Reed or Bryson de Shambo because they
can bring some stuff on themselves. But I never thought
of the day outside if it was a Phil Tiger rivalry,
where you would be, you know, cheering against Phil. But

(12:25):
it is a different feel with him. Okay, how about
this one? Are you cheering against the Warriors? Tonight s
Doug Olip Show on Fox Sports Trading. The Warriors have
caught some heat because their payroll is an excess of
three forty million dollars. Last week, rival executives grumbled to
Zach low of ESPN about their competitive spending advantage. How

(12:46):
Monday night, ESPNS Brian Winhorse called Game five a quote
checkbook win for the Warriors after Andrew Wiggins, a fourth
MAX player on the team, led Golden State to the win. Uh.
The Warriors have a basketball operations consultant, Zapor Surely, of
course used to play for the Warriors. He was asked
about the narrative that the Warriors have a competitive spending

(13:06):
advantage and it potentially bought a title. Here's this response.
We're not doing something that it's illegal or it's against
the rules, right, so, which we are doing something that
is we are kids totally fine to do, right, It's
total legal. So you know that's that talks something that's
been so uh in on behalf of the ownership group

(13:28):
that we have, right. So I'm I'm super proud of
what Joe Lacob and you know, Peter Gooberg has done
for this team culturally on and out the court. It's honestly,
I have never seen anywhere, um that you know, ownership
group being so dedicated and you know, so to be
thinking about the players and their families and um, you know,

(13:49):
I'm thankful, Okay, so I'm struggling with First of all,
Windhorse is I think Windhorse is an outstanding reporter. I
think he wants to do this analysis stuff and it's
not his role, right, Like, I'm just being being totally

(14:09):
fair here. He is a really good reporter, a really
good writer. There's an analysts need to have played, coached
or bien in the front office. He's been. He's been
none of the three. So I heard him, and I
won't say the other shows, a national show and he
was talking about a Boston. I just keep driving in
there to the and like, wait, what if you watch

(14:34):
Game three? They won Game three because they were just
brute force attacking the rim. And yes they're a high
turnover team, but they're having to adjust to where the
help comes from, the different rotations forcing them to their
weaker hands, and the fact that not a lot of
fouls called on drives for either team. Additionally, this is

(14:55):
a bit of an analysis where he's just a reporter,
Like Brian wnd Horse shot a bea warding. Another NBA
g M told me it was a you know, it
was a a spending advantage win. Um. But my perception
of the Warriors is completely different. Yeah, they were willing

(15:17):
to take on Andrew Wiggins's contract, but anybody could have
had that contract. There were lots of people who thought
Andrew Wiggins wasn't worth that money, you know. And if
you want to say that they are overpaying because they're
paying the luxury tax, that's within the rules. The rest
of those contracts they have are all guys that are

(15:39):
home grown that they have their bird rights and they
choose chose to extend. Remember they paid Clay for two years.
He did not play a second. A second there was
anything like, oh, well, we're not gonna We're not gonna
We're gonna try and get out of Clay's contract, or
you know, when Clay gets back, we're gonna get out

(16:00):
of it. I mean, they're they're overpaying Draymond Green. Why
because he's part of their core group and we're gonna
keep paying him. This is one of those just like
when when Matt Liner was in college, always said, well
that Matt Liner's was the Arizona Cardinals. They're pictures of
a pool party in this house. And my thought then

(16:21):
was my same thought now. The only people mad about
Matt Liner having a pool party were people not invited
to the pool party. The only people that are mad
about Golden State and their competitive advantage is other teams
that just won't spend the money or don't have the
homegrown players. This is the thing, like, look, if you
want to keep your homegrown players, you have to overpay them.

(16:41):
That's what they've done. They've overpaid Draymond, They've overpaid Clay
no matter what Clay is worth. Now, the fact is
they paid him for two years they didn't play. I
know some of that insurance picks up they don't have
to pick up. So I don't see it as it's
not you just you have owners that are in or out.

(17:02):
I've I've heard that the Clippers are owned by the
best owner really because it's whatever it takes financially that
he believes can help you win it win. The Lakers
are not that way. They're a mom and pop shop
and they pay the players. Well, they have a really
nice facility. Hey, but they it's not like they overspend

(17:23):
for coaching, talent, for other things, you know, for front office,
et cetera. That's just not how they're wired. No problem
with the Golden State Warriors. They're trying to keep a
dynasty intact. This is we get to can't win territory. Right.
We just watched the you know, two years ago during
the shutdown, the Chicago Bulls dynasty, and really it came

(17:47):
to an end because Scottie Pippen wanted to be overpaid
when he signed a long term contract. Previously, you know,
Jordan would have come back, but it had to be
they would have had to overspend on everything, figure out,
made a way to make it work, and they couldn't,
and they blew it up after six titles. The Warriors
they said, we're not gonna let money stand in our way,

(18:08):
and they have not dollars. Shape Club six blade razor
brings notice to be smooth shades with six stainless steel
blades for swift hair removal and lubricating strip that keeps
things smooth. Dollar Shaved Club razors are sold at Dollar
Shaved Club, Dollar Shafe Club, dot com Rage stores. Here's
the perfect example of it. Okay, what the Warriors are
doing is akin to living in California. You get plenty

(18:31):
of people they're like, man, how do you live out
their taxes or so, But if you're if you're living
in the on the beach, if you're living in a
great spot and everybody's happy. Why would you mess with happy?
You just you're right to check. You're like, all right,
doesn't feel good right in these taxes. But it's seventy
five and sunny every day. You know, I live a

(18:52):
block from the beach. My kids are happy, everybody's happy.
That's great. That's what it is. The Warriors are happy.
So yeah, are gonna pay through the nose in Texas? Okay.
The value of our franchise doubled when we moved from
Oakland to San Francisco, and with every title it continues
to go up. We'll make it up. In the back end.

Doug Otlip Show Fox Sports Radio. We got a lot
to get to here, kids, Oh you're here one of
those days, Ramos So, I made the mistake. I'm glad

(19:35):
you watched the new uh Obi Wan last night. There
was also a new Tehran So and I I just
I have that that impulsivity thing right where there's no
games on. I did watch game one of the the
Stanley Cup finals uh, but I just you know, like
I got done, like man that that new Obi Wan's
out watched it. Then right Southern New Tehran watched and

(20:02):
I would say, the new Obi Wan Kenobi is really good.
It's am I am I overselling it. I don't think
you're overselling it. I think one scene or one storyline
in this one just pleases every Star Wars fan that's
out there, and I think that right there is enough.
All all I've seen on Instagram, on Instagram, on the

(20:23):
social media from last sight to today is all about
this one deal that happens in episode five, and it's
it's enough to kind of even if the rest of
the storyline, like we kind of forgot about the rest
of the storyline because this was so great that it
just it's fulfilled all of what everybody was looking forward to.
So yeah, I did not think they were going to

(20:45):
tie be able to tie it all together. I didn't
know how I was going to tie all together. And
then I was like, oh man, they did a really
good job of tying it all together. Yeah it's it's
it's done well and the in the it ties into
the actual storyline that's going on now on what that
back flashback. That's all I'll say, says about what the
storyline is right now. So yeah, it was, it was,
it was Actually what's Tarran? Is that on Apple Plus?

(21:07):
Is that apples on Apple Plus? Apple Plus? Would would
highly recommend it if you like kind of spy thrillers.
Uh yeah, highly make your bed if you like spy thrillers.
And obviously it's a Middle Eastern flair. It's a a
massad agent or agents who go into Tehran. Uh two. Uh,

(21:32):
that's that's basically that's basically. Well, I'll leave it at that.
Really well shot, good acting, current time tarnt Tehran. Not yes, yes, yes, yes, yes, excellent.
Uh oh I saw this. This was interesting. Pat Mahomes
had to answer questions about Tyreek Hill. Okay, let me
kind of jog your memory a little bit from a

(21:53):
couple of days ago. Tyreek Hill uh said, Hey, Pat
Moms is great, you could throw it a mile, but
you know, truth be told to a tongue by a
lot is more accurate. And he said he would rather
have a more accurate guy than have a guy could
throw at a mile. That that's kind of paraphrase in
there that I got. The show is brought to you
by Dollar Shape Club. They're six plade razor brings noticeably

(22:13):
smooth shave with six stainless steel blades for swift hair
removal and a lubricating strip that keeps things smooth. Dollar
Shaped Club razors are sold dollar Shape Club dot com,
Orange stores. So, um, this was Pat my Homes reacting
to Tyreek Hill saying to is more accurate. I'm surprised
a little, um, just because I feel like we we
love Tyreek here, we always loved and we still love him.

(22:35):
I saw him out of Formula one in Miami. I mean,
I'm sure it had something to do with trying to
get his podcast some some stuff and get it rolling.
But uh, definitely, I still love Tyreek is one of
the kind player. But where as you know and Coach
Red's offense, it takes the whole team. I mean, this
offense was rolling before I got here. This offense was
rolling when I was a young Cowboy fan watching the
Eagles beat up on the Cowboys. So I mean it's
a it's an offense that's more than one player, and

(22:56):
that includes myself. You went up with the perfect answer
from Pat Mahomes. That was an amazing answer. You know,
we're not only as he said, like, what are you
talking about? But it's about more than one guy, including myself.
Most guys don't include that, especially quarterbacks. But Tyrekill also said,
you know he needs more respect, me, more touches, Like look, dude,

(23:18):
you're going against defenses that are specifically designed to take
you away. So oftentimes you're gonna you know, the smart
strategy was for you to be a decoy. The only
reason they won't they may not employ the same strategy
when you're in Miami is you have a quarterback that
can't throw the ball down the field, so maybe or

(23:38):
they don't think he can make the same throws, so
they may dare him to do so. The ultimate respect
is when somebody designs defense specifically to take you away.
And I can't ever remember a time which I said,
you know, Tyreek Hill, they don't look for him enough.
You know, they don't they don't look for him enough.

(24:02):
Steck out lip show here on Fox Sports Radio. Yeah,
it does feel like Tampa and Oakland at some point. Oakland,
I cannot believe they haven't moved yet, right, I just
can't believe it, Like, how many times are we gonna
go back and forth about them getting a stadium, not
getting a stadium, Like, look, they haven't built the yet's
time to go, you know. And I have a few

(24:24):
more I guess heartstrings with Oakland because of the history there.
It's the raised thing that I just and and maybe
dug it's because that facility just isn't great, So maybe
they get the benefit of the doubt. But I just
don't have a lot of I just don't have tons
of sympathy, you know. And I think of the history
of the A's, I'm like, Okay, I could see why
you really want to try to save that. I just

(24:45):
I wonder why we keep trying to save the Tampa
Bay Rays. I don't know. I don't know. I think
it's a it's a great question. Why do you think
that is? I'm not sure And and and I will
fully admit i' don't know local politics down there. I
don't know the same deal. So as an outsider, maybe
my comments are naive, but there just seems to be

(25:07):
a little bit more history with with the Oakland A's. Well, um,
I will tell you of of the predictions that I've
given that have gone right. You know, we we We
talked about Andrew Wiggins earlier this week. How I told
you it was a perfect fit and I thought it'd
be helped the Warriors win a championship. Um, I told
a long time ago. I said, Vegas Raiders, it'll work,

(25:30):
it'll fit, it makes sense. I just I can't. I'm
with you. No one has thought either of these two
franchises makes sense in baseball. I don't know what they're
waiting on to pull the plug. Andrew Britt joins US
course covers the business of sports. He's worked in two
front offices, the the Philadelphia Eagles and the Green Bay Packers.
He's kind of spent some time with this year on

(25:52):
the Doug Gottlip Show. You had an extended conversation in
The New York Times about the Deshaun Watson civil cases. Uh,
tell me about the cops. Thank Yeah. Talked to Jenny
branchersforman colleagues at S I wrote those pieces on Shaun Watson.
All the new information, which I want to say right away,

(26:14):
is not really new information. It's just more of the
same what we've seen now for a year, and it's
amplified by Jenny's reporting over the past week. Just this
continued pattern where Shaun Watson is going into massages wanting
more than a massage. She's talked to women that have
been affected, including what are now the twenty three and

(26:38):
four lawsuits against him, and this information that it's going
up to and who knows beyond that. And she also
identified the number of massage therapists sought out in a
sixty month period being sixty six. So it's all you know,

(27:00):
it's all out there, and you and I have talked
about this before, and I've been very kind of disdainful
even from the contracts for a point of view, which
now is held up as the biggest and strongest contract
in NFL history. And I guess I just keep coming
back to that. And people have seen me, Andrew. You know,

(27:21):
with the Packers equals, you had some bad guys on
your team. You had people have done bad things. And
I'm like, absolutely absolutely we signed players that had west
in stellar character or or resumes, but never ever as
the face of the franchise. We're gonna reconnect with you

(27:43):
in a second. That's Andrew Brandon joining us covers the
Business of Sports. Yeah, it's a I mean, it's a
it's uh just an optics alone. It's terrible. And then
you know, I understand, Actually, why yet you select your lawyer.
You get a guy who you look around, you're like, well,
he got Roger Clemmens off, right, that's from reputation. Wise,

(28:05):
got Roger Clemments off. Why why wouldn't I want him?
It's a great point, um, but it should be pointing
out that there was rhetoric that came out when they did,
when he got you know, um, Roger Clemens out that
you don't necessarily want there's a tone in a way
and a win at all costs, uh kind of mentality there.

(28:30):
On the other hand, you have the you know, you
got an opposing lawyer who wants to be in the media,
wants to make an aim for himself. This is a
really unique case and it's gonna be very interesting to
see what the league does and how it plays out because,
as Andrew said, there's just a volume of accusers accusers

(28:52):
out there. Here's what I want to get to next.
Andrew Bread is gonna reconnect with us in a second.
So Lamar Jackson, he missed the voluntario. He as he
shows up at the ones, you've got to show up
at because the fines are really really substantial. What do
you do contract wise? Because look, he's the face of
your franchise, you built an offense around him. He's one
an m v P. You know, he's super talented. But

(29:18):
there there's there's a bunch of other levels to it.
First part, first level to it is how what is
his ceiling? Can he if he's paid commensurate with the
top quarterbacks in the league, can he uh? Can he
win those playoff games? Can you win playing the style?
Or can he win playing a different style? And that

(29:40):
is to this point very much TBD. I'm not gonna
say no never ever, he has won a road playoff
game coming from behind. That did happen, But there has
been what appears to be a a ceiling there. He's
gained weight, likely because he did get hurt last year.
The hits seemed to get harder, and he wants to
keep running the football. But what do you pay that guy?

(30:03):
Knowing strong likehood he gets hurt, knowing seems to be
a ceiling. Knowing that even with as talented a team
as any team in the NFL that really haven't made
a playoff run during his time thus far? You know, um,
I think that part is really really interesting. Where are

(30:25):
we with Andrew? All right, we're trying to get Andrew
brand back in one second, Andrew, what what are your
thoughts on Lamar Jackson? Like, how do you how do
you approach a contract like that when you can franchise
tag him? He obviously wants a new deal. You want him,
you know. They've never said anything publicly like they don't

(30:45):
want no off the field issues of note none, but
there does appear to be a ceiling there, and there's
got to be the fear that he's taking too many
hits and eventually that'll slow him down or Derella. Yeah,
there's but as we were talking before where the phone
had issues, the Watson contract is the president. I know
Steve Aschatta, who was complaining about it at the owners meeting,

(31:07):
can try to explain it away a unique circumstances and
aberration and outlier. But if I'm Lamar Jackson or his agent,
or if he doesn't have an agent himself or his mother,
that's the president, you know, and he can argue I've
had a better career than Watson, I have no off
the field issues like Watson. Why shouldn't I get forty
six million a year guaranteed every year for five years,

(31:31):
plus inflation, plus whatever I get for being a better citizen.
I don't know. I mean, that hasn't happened. I don't
know if that's the Ravens saying it's not going to happen,
or Jackson hasn't engaged them in the right way yet.
It's it is a strange one out there, as we know,
last year of his contract, potential franchise tax. But I

(31:53):
get what you're saying from a team point of view
about worry about injury, the way he plays, future guarantees.
But again I look at it from the player. So
that's the president, that's the market right now. So so again,
how do you structure you for them? Well, if you're
depends who you are. If you're the player, you don't
want any of the things I'm about to say, such

(32:14):
as increase money. Is he stays healthy, uh, less risk
if he gets injured. You know, the Washington contract is
for all risks to the team. A lot of these quarters,
a lot of these other contracts are all risks to
the player. If he gets hurt. After two years, he's
kind of out of luck because it's usually the length

(32:35):
of guarantees for these contracts. So I know you what
you're asking. I'm just saying, from what from Jackson's point
of view, why should he risk money for getting hurt
because Watson didn't? I understand, But I mean, it's like this.

(32:56):
This reminds me of UH help me out. Remind me
who is the cornerback for the Jets? Uh vs Right?
Darrell Rivas? Right? Remember Darrell Rivas when the Jets told him, hey, man,
we think you're the best cornerback in the league. So
he held out to say, on the best quarterback league,
I want to be paid like it. They were the
best quarterbacks in the league at the time, made twelve

(33:18):
million a year with one exception, Namdi asom I made
sixteen million, so he wanted dollar more. But everyone regarded
namd awesome wise contract as a terrible contract. So why
would we copy the terrible contract that is Deshaun Watson's
contract instead of the other contracts that preceded it. Well, listen,

(33:42):
this is some different models of top quarterback contracts out there.
This is, of course the one that is the biggest
and strongest and most recent. But we know a couple
of these players in similar age frame, as as Jackson,
have gotten contracts with big numbers, but they're long. Pat
My Homes eleven years, Josh Allen eight years, you know,

(34:07):
and you know these contracts after a couple of years,
the risk goes to the player because the guarantees fall off.
Not no one thinks that the Chiefs or Bills will
ever cut Tat Mahomes or Josh Allen, but they could.
They could in a few years, and I'm sure the

(34:27):
Ravens would like that kind of contract long term. Lock
him up and if you don't want him later, you
just move on, you know. I think the strongest contract
besides Watson to me is Dak Prescott, which is four years,
hundred and sixty million. But it's a huge number, and
he's a free agent in four years to get even

(34:48):
a bigger deal. But maybe with Lamar Jackson, you do
want a shorter deal because you don't know if he'll
be there for that next deal in four years. So interesting,
interesting question you ask Doug otlip Show here on Fox
Sports Radio. That's the voice of Andrew brandt Uh He's

(35:11):
basically the voice of the business of sports. Got its
own Business Sports podcast, he's a former Packers and Eagles executive.
You can subscribe to his Sunday seven newsletter at Andrew
slash Brandt dot com Andrew Brandt dot com. Okay, um.
In terms of the movement of two different quarterbacks, Garoppolo

(35:34):
and Baker, they're both owed money. Baker owed a lot
more money, I believe nineteen million because that fifth year
was picked up. Um, what's the likelihood you know, there
was some some new talk of Carolina if they could
figure out the finances. What's the likelhood of somebody who
doesn't have an injury to the quarterback position taking on
that contract. I think it's very light, very small. I

(35:57):
see three ways Baker Mayfield of what happens to him
this year, three different ways, and none of them. None
of them include him playing for the Browns who are
going to need a quarterback. Number One, they pay him
and trade him, so he's got eighteen million. They give
him a ten million dollar bonus just because, and a

(36:20):
new team takes on eight million dollars, which they be
much more willing to do than taking on eighteen million dollars.
Number two an NBA type trade, brock Oswiler type trade
where they attach an asset. Someone's going to take that
eighteen million and Mayfield they better get something good with it,
such as I don't know. Third round, pick number three,

(36:44):
they do a replay of Deshaun Watson in Houston where
they tell him you're paid, just stay away, Just stay away,
have fun with your money at home, more than a
million dollars a week. Just stay away because whatever reason.
And this is a backstory, we don't really know, Doug

(37:05):
that ship sailed, Like even if Watson suspended, they're not
playing this guy. They're not going back to him with
hat in hand. And it just seems like that relationship
has been severed. So now it's a question of who's
willing to do something and four how much or what
asset did they need to take them on? It's fascinating.

(37:28):
Is this whole thing is really really interesting? I mean
I don't. I kind of like that. I think he's
got a lot of moxie. I think he's great in
the commercials. I'm not a talent evaluator, but he can't
get a job like I don't get that one. Well,
but who's your replacing? I mean, Seattle? Seattle makes sense

(37:52):
because there's nobody on their roster, like, well, that guy's
started as much as you can say Sam Donald. But
I mean, like, look, Sam Donald last year first three
games was right, then Christian McCaffrey gets hurt. I don't
know how mary they are to Sam Donald. But Sam
Donald and Baker Mayfield the similar guys there, right, they
just are. Yeah, And I think even with the injury,

(38:12):
I think we put Garoppo and Baker in the same category.
As as my feeling it is somebody wanted these players
even with the money, they'd be on those teams right now.
Like if somebody wanted Garoppolo, even with the injury, he'd
be traded. If somebody wanted Mayfield, he'd be traded. I
just think there's no market for these guys. For whatever reason,

(38:36):
there just is no market. Um. There's a lot of
talk of Mackay Beckton's wait. It was an issue growing up,
an issue at Louisville. He's a giant of a man.
He was listed at six seven, three sixty three. That
was from the scouting Combine and then of course he
missed sixteen games due to knee surgery and uh, you

(39:00):
know his wife had a baby. There's his knees in question.
What's it like in those front offices when you have
a guy who has remarkable talent but can't can't keep
himself in shape during the off season. Well, you're like,
look at history, of course, and this goes to the
draft process. If someone has a weight issues as a

(39:22):
twenty year old, they're not going to get better when
he's I'm not suggesting that's his issue, but patterns repeat
themselves with players. That's why you know injuries is such
a factor in football. For guy's had injuries, he's going
to tend to have him again. I don't know the
Beckton situation. I'll give you this little anecdote. I used
to do weight clauses for guys are worried about and

(39:45):
sometimes would be every week, sometimes it'll be every month,
sometimes would be twice a year, And I learned the
hard way doug never works because they get overweight and
then the week before the weight the way in you
know that they're doing the wrestler thing. They're wearing the
rubber suits in the sauna, and it's just became not

(40:07):
healthy and it became a joke. So I don't know
the answer, but had learned the hard way from negotiating contract.
It's not weight clauses. Yeah, it's it's a it's an
interesting one. It's one to keep an eye on because,
you know, as much as we're worried about their quarterback
who put on weight because he needed to gain strength,

(40:28):
you know you gotta worry about his left tackle. He's
gotta lose weight, get right. That very much affects everything
else within that offense. And you're kind of pot committed
based upon the fact that Joe Douglas drafted him. You know,
he's somebody to build around and now he's expected to
produce and the weight could become a major major factor. Andrew,

(40:48):
great stuff. Thanks so much for joining us. I always
enjoyed to take care
