Speaker 2 (00:22):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean for Friday,
first of yesterday's news. I am Glenn Hart, and we
are looking back at Thursday. Will we ever stop talking
about the pokinghorn case? How to improve productivity? Is this
to do with power? Maybe? Is there going to be

(00:45):
any next winter? And we'll finish up with people also
still talking about the Manawanui on the bottom of the
ocean in summer. But before any of that, emergency management
in this country it's in for a bit of a shakeup.
I think is this overdue? According to John McDonald.

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Call it what you want. Too many cocks in the kitchen.
You can call it a cast of thousands. That's the
nub of why we seem to be getting no better
at disaster planning, disaster response and disaster management. Now might
refer to all the people Mark Mitchell was talking about
there as Dad's army, But I either way, from my experience,
there are a lot of mustaches involved in emergency and

(01:24):
disaster management, a lot of testosterone and from my own
personal experience a lot of egos. Now you don't get
that in the military. You probably still get your fair
share of mustaches. But there are hierarchies that people operate
under in the Defense Force in normal times and dury
type during times of disaster. The Defense Force has communication

(01:48):
functions and capabilities that no local council is ever going
to have. The Defense Force does plan for worst case scenarios.
It does all the things our disaster and emergency management
people haven't been doing and who have been called out
for not doing it, not just in Mike Bush's report,
but others as well. And that's why I am more

(02:10):
convinced than ever that instead of pouring more time and
money into a standalone civil defense system one the government
itself is saying today needs to improve, is also saying
that there might not be the money to do it.
That's why I think we should be merging our civil
defense and military defense functions, or you want to put
it another way, I think we should be bringing the

(02:31):
army in well before disaster strikes.

Speaker 2 (02:34):
So what I gleaned out of that is that John
really hates people with mustaches, and this is I've got
bad news for him. Next month it's November. I think
he should book a an overseas holiday. Do they have
November everywhere? Or is that just a New Zealand home

(02:55):
Shave it off, guys, for John's sake?

Speaker 1 (02:59):
News talk, Has it been right?

Speaker 2 (03:01):
So news that they're going to be making a movie
or a TV series or a documentary or some kind
thing about the Polkinhorn case? Is it tired to just
let it go?

Speaker 4 (03:15):
The line in the press release that caught my attention
was this, by presenting the facts of the case in
a responsible, forensic and non judgmental way, the mysterious death
of Pauline Hannah will let the audience decide. Is that
not what the court case was for? Okay, quite a
bit of judgment was passed in that court case. But
if you followed the court case, and you must remember

(03:35):
mister Polkinhorn was found not guilty, you've already probably made
up your own mind about what happened. Do we need
a dramatization? Haven't we had enough? There is a place
for true crime documentaries, podcasts and dramatizations. They can be
a powerful way to tell cautionary tales and question our
justice system and the treatment of victims. Just look at

(03:56):
the Grace Meline documentary currently screening on Netflix. It's called
The Lie The Murder of Grace Melane. I suggest you
watch it. It's very good. This is a documentary that
adds context to the story. It reveals new information and footage,
was to live at a respectful time after Grace's death,
and most importantly, respected the victim and their family. Look
at a time when local production industry is hurting, it

(04:17):
is good to hear about new productions with international funding.
But if some specific pictures goes ahead with this ratings winner,
there is still an ethical obligation to do it with
care and consideration for the victim, their families and friends.

Speaker 2 (04:32):
Yes, which makes you wonder if that tilly billboards, the
tilly billboards. Just going back to that, I saw another
one this morning driving in about it says something like,
I know all the celebrities on the island, Yeah, right,

(04:58):
they just get a little bit if they got people
who are just a little bit snarky doing them at
the moment, I feel like they've missed the vibe of
what those billboards are supposed to be. But anyway, you talk, right,
A lot of discussion lately about productivity because apparently, you know,
we work really hard in this country that we don't
can matchually go for it.

Speaker 5 (05:18):
How do we fix that If we have people who
are being congratulated because they've got one over their employer
by not having to work the hours actually a try
to not having to work the hours to actually get
the job done, and then still claiming for a week,
I really think it's the wrong message to be seeing everyone. Yeah,
I appreciate it's not the employees fault that that situation occurs,

(05:44):
but if you are in that situation, at least had
the dignity to be honest about it without being stupid
about it at the same time. So I'm sorry, guys.
I hear what you've been saying, congratulating guys and saying
we haven't.

Speaker 6 (05:59):
We certainly haven't been congratulating anyone about that at all.
I was talking about at one point in my life
when I was a lazy, useless twenty year old, I
was sleeping on the job because there was no work
to do. I didn't feel proud of myself at all.
And I would say that you are doing better in life,
but both mentally and for your career if you are
working as hard as you can, and you're moving forward

(06:20):
for yourself and the company and being productive. And I'd say,
when you go into a job, if you can see
it as a way to move forward by being as
good as you can, then that works for yourself, it
works for the company, and ultimately it works for the country.

Speaker 7 (06:35):
It's a fine line, isn't it great? Because I actually
agree that the cream rises to the top and if
you are efficient at your job nine times out of ten,
your employee will recognize that and you will move up
the ranks.

Speaker 2 (06:47):
So I think good Greg Ringan to tell Matt and
Tyler off sounded like it, and then they agreed with him.
What's going on with this reasonable Arternoon show at the moment? No,
it makes me uncomfortable.

Speaker 8 (07:07):
Right, So we've got.

Speaker 2 (07:10):
Some long range forecasts, which is ridiculous because they can't
even forecast anyway, you know my views on the weather
forecasts and things like that. Anyway, we've got some long
range forecasts and whether we're going to run out of
power again next winter, and you know, the big news
slashes that yes, yes, yes, we are.

Speaker 9 (07:25):
Forget you, whether whether the wind blows, you know, the
sun shines, the rainfalls, whatever, just getting it to us
costs almost half of our total and that job is
done by essentially monopolies, the distributors, the lines, companies transpower,
so the Commerce Commission regulates their profits. Right, we would
expect them to do that. Five year contracts. Next contract
up for a newle march, your household bill for electricity

(07:50):
could go up fifteen dollars per month or one hundred
and eighty dollars per year. For some households that will
be twenty dollars per month two hundred and forty dollars
per year. They say this is the NBA advice. There
is a serious risk that some homes won't be able
to afford heating, and we know what happens when people
can't hate their homes. The hospitals fill up, industry and

(08:12):
business fill the squeeze, and our thin growth forecast could
also be squeezed by something like this.

Speaker 8 (08:19):
So what's the moral of the story. Well, basically, go
and buy yourself a nice warm jumper, get a hot
water bottle. And if you are single and living alone,
you have until April to find someone to cuddle at night.

Speaker 2 (08:31):
Get a dog, Go get a person. A dog is
far more reliable far more loyal and well, never get
si good tablet. There'd be my advice, probably cheapen to
run in the long run.

Speaker 1 (08:45):
So news talk z bean.

Speaker 2 (08:48):
Snicle, wasn't it Sure? Maybe I should run a tey
bill Wards. Let's finish up here with more general weirdness.
Marcus is just catching up on some of his texts.

Speaker 10 (08:59):
Marcus reading about the ship that sank it was a
z elimentitary ship. Am I correct? Well, obviously it's part
of our navy. If so, I feel like the reaction
to its sinking was just frustrated. Key was in their
anger out. Has news even become less patriotic? What a
stupid text? What everything sometimes happens to we have to

(09:19):
get all outraged and try and magic up reasons it happened.
In fact, I haven't heard any of that stuff. But
I'm not on crazy websites. I haven't heard any of
the blame or misogyny or crazy reasoning or twisted logic.
There was one or two texts through the other day,
but I just ignored those because it just looked You
looked at if you get a text that someone says,

(09:41):
oh it was because of this, you just look at
some of the other texts they say, and most of
the time they're still going on about you, Cinder Well,
that seems to be obvious. They've got problems with women,
and that pretty much discounts the straight away.

Speaker 2 (10:03):
I didn't realize that people were blaming adourned for a
reef for connoissance ship heading a reef.

Speaker 8 (10:14):
We look into that. I'm going to have to go
and do my own research on that.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
It sounds like it makes perfect sense. Let's have the
weekend off shoe we and we'll reconvene with another being
on Monday.
