Speaker 3 (00:22):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the bean for Tuesday.
First with yesterday's news, I'm Glen Hart, and we are
looking back at Monday. First day back for some people
here at News Talks SEDB, my first day back in
the office. It's not important, but yes, Matt and Tyler
(00:43):
were back on here yesterday afternoon and they were talking
about the difference between large families and small families. Where
Marcus went his summer holiday. Have a first up, new year,
new job for some people in the Tylish and government.
Bit of a cabinet reshuffle there and health seems to
(01:05):
be the big talking point.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
I appreciate Luxeon's loyalty. Others questioned Retty's performance last year,
but loyalty doesn't get the job done, and Luxon needs
a political operator who can, in his words, deliver and
execute step on up then the delivery man simm and
Brown Prime Minister Luxon described Doc Dirretti as a top
quality human being at a team player. When asked how
(01:28):
we took the news and look I couldn't agree more.
He's a good guy. I've always found him to be thoughtful, dignified,
his intentions, genuine and knowledgeable on the health system. But
he wasn't quite as good at communicating how things were
moving forward and simple, decisive, reassuring sound bites. Yes, there
were wins, such as the announcement of cancer drugs, another
(01:50):
seventeen billion being thrown in health over three years, and
suggestion of change in culture and house New Zealand, but
these can't compete with headline grabbing issues. The system is
facing things like staff shortages, government issues, funding deficits in
the proposed scale back to Dunedin's hospital rebuild. Top of that, too,
many frontline and senior clinicians said doctr Retti was out
(02:12):
of his depth. I wonder if doctor Etti is quietly
signed with relief at being moved on from a portfolio
often seen as a poison chalice, as Clai Trevett calls it.
He might not have had the mongrel to get health
under control quickly enough for the national leader, but that's
not to say he won't be effective in his new roles. Well,
(02:34):
the Prime Minister has previously said he sees no need
for a reshuffle. This actually is a positive start to
twenty twenty five for Luxen Sure, if it ain't broke,
don't fix it, But if you think you can do better,
then hell yeah, let's go. Hopefully we will get a
more efficient health system out of it.
Speaker 3 (02:51):
Yeah, it was reported that Retty was overthinking things when
you have the most complicated portfolio and government, I guess
overthinking is an issue.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I wouldn't know. I've never ever thought anything.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
News Talk zid.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
Bean Anyway, Andrew Dickens is standing in on the Drive
Show this week. What did he make of it all?
Speaker 5 (03:20):
The man who learned from his boss the best was
Simeon Brown, the man who made all the roading issues
all about potholes after one of the whetter se years ever,
the man who criticized blanket speed limits and then imposed
a blanket speed limit. But he knew exactly how to
do a great quote. I listened to all of Sybyans
interviews today and the thing that stood out to me
(03:40):
was that, well, how little was said and a number
of words he said the word delivery, delivery, delivery, delivery.
When asked about a specific he would just say, I'm
going to concentrate on the delivery. When he wasn't saying delivery.
He was saying timely and quality delivery of health care.
None of it answered the question, but it doesn't matter.
It sounded good. That's why the Prime Minister hired him.
(04:01):
When I came in and people said he wouldn't confirm
Lester Levy, I said he wouldn't deny Lester Levy either.
He's not here to say a thing, He's just here
to say I'm going to deliver. So obviously Simeon needs
to get his feet under the desk, and when he does,
he will not take any prisoners because once Simeon sets
his mind to a course, it will stay set. And
(04:21):
that is a strength just as long as it's the
right course. And then it's not.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Yeah, he's no nonsense, isn't he? Simian Brown.
Speaker 3 (04:35):
Hopefully and then yeah, let's hope he doesn't overthink anything.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
Yeah. So yeah, we are still sort of in.
Speaker 3 (04:43):
The uncomfortable time of a few stand in hosts still.
I mean John McDonald is always there in some places
in the country, but not in all places in the
country like he is this week.
Speaker 6 (04:57):
I live in New Zealand's second largest city and I
know things even wants to throw the door can be
a bit average at some of our smaller hospitals. Take
what was it Dargville Hospital. Remember last year there was
that issue with no doctors on the wards overnight that
had been going on for a few months, and the
nurses there weren't happy about it. In fact, the nurses
didn't want to work overnight with no doctor on the wards.
(05:20):
And poor on Shane Retty. He was on the firing
line pouring cold water on rumors that the whole place
was going to be shut down. Of course, hospitals are
only part of the health system. GPS are another part.
I saw Brian Betty on the news last night. He's
the head of the organization representing GPS, and he was
saying that he thought Shane Retty had been doing a
pretty good job. Which is another reason why I think
(05:43):
Simmy and Brown is on a collision course Because even
though the Prime Minister didn't like the pace Shane Retty
was working at, and even though I don't think Shane
Retty was all that good as a health minister, I
don't think Simmy and Brown's approach is going to do
us any favors at all because mister gets stuff done.
Is also going to be mister get people's backs up.
And that's not going to do anyone any favors. It's
(06:07):
not going to do you any favors. It's not going
to do me any favors, and it's certainly not going
to do any favors for anyone working in the health system.
But if Sime and Brown proved me wrong, and if
he does manage to get people on side, and if
he does manage to make the health system better than
it is now, then I will be one of the
first people to acknowledge it.
Speaker 3 (06:28):
It's I get the feeling people are a little bit
nervous about Tom and Brown, but they're all prepared to
give him a chance. I mean, it's only in the
country's entire health system. I'm sure you sit right. They
got to talking about the difference between big families and
(06:50):
little families from the afternoon Ja yesterday, which one was
Matt Heath from.
Speaker 7 (06:55):
I think back in the day when we used to
send children overseas, the family dynamics in New Zealand were
very different as the family size was bigger and if
something happened to the child, there was always a spear
from Jason, that's that's a bit extreme, But I think
there was a little bit of that because I was
from four kids and I remember coming across these boxes
of stuff and how much my parents had done with
the first two kids, like with the scrap books.
Speaker 2 (07:18):
They were just there was so much.
Speaker 7 (07:19):
But by the time you get to a fourth kid, you.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
Were the confidence is huge, as He'll be right, yeah, and.
Speaker 7 (07:25):
You've sort of moved on in your life about your parenting,
your parenting stage, your life is kind of over, and
you've got these sort of hang on kids that are
still around.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
And number four is does anyone seen men eye around
Some don't worry about it.
Speaker 7 (07:35):
Just the sheer amount of energy say you know, like
you know, my mum was from five kids and and so,
and you know, like there's people in my wider family
that have thirteen kids in their family, members of a
certain church, and that there's no way that you could
have the same attention that you have on you know,
(07:55):
some ponts and big couple with one kid. You know,
the amount of the two parents and the laser focus
on the one that child. There's probably a lot of
this coddling that's going on. We talk about why kids
are you know, anxious and stuff, and they put it
down a lot to you know, the being you know,
not being left to their own devices, and you know,
and the anxiety of their parents.
Speaker 2 (08:15):
Is coming on.
Speaker 7 (08:15):
That's probably why if you've got one kid, then they're
going to have a lot of attention. If you've got four,
they're going to have a quarter of the attention.
Speaker 5 (08:21):
Arguably, have more kids, then you've got a couple of
spears up your sleep.
Speaker 3 (08:24):
Now I can sort of go in full circle as well,
because I was one of four kids, but I was
one of those.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
Accidents or after thoughts or what.
Speaker 3 (08:38):
The hell is going on here? Because I'm eight years
younger than my nearest civil.
Speaker 2 (08:44):
And so by that.
Speaker 3 (08:46):
My brother and my sisters it was more like having
an uncle, would a couple of aunts than a brother
and a sister. In many ways talk about spoiled. Oh
the easter eggs Easter time, so many.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Easter eggs used talk been.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
Unfortunately it didn't mean that when we all went on
a family on a holiday and the Holden Kingwood station
where and there's no room for me on the back seat,
and I had to sit in the boot hating the
wrong way, So I only ever saw where we'd been,
not where we were going.
Speaker 8 (09:15):
We actually spent a we spent five weeks away because
I spent a week broadcasting from Auckland, and then we
were up further north, up out of Fangare, and we
bust back via Avia everywhere basically or Tucky and Featherstone
(09:40):
and Huangananui and New Plymouth and Omaha. Old inter city
is not too bad in the end. The South Island
buses are a lot cleaner. The North Island busses could
do with a bit of a j up the older
the city, although by the end of it I was
(10:00):
singing One Long Day on the inter City to the
tune of One Short Day in the Emerald City. That
worked well for me. But anyway, there was good. The
kids were well behaved. I'll tell you what though having
a farm it makes been away for a long time
a lot more stressful. But I was pleased to get
to the top paddic and realize that both sheep were
(10:22):
still fine, so that was a great comfort to me.
I've left them plenty of water, so they were They
weren't pleased to see me, but they were still alive,
which I thought was I always thought they would be,
but you never quite know what's going to go on
in your absence.
Speaker 3 (10:38):
Yeah, we left a fish in its tank when we
were away for a week and unfortunately it was also
still alive when we got back.
Speaker 2 (10:52):
We have been trying to kill.
Speaker 9 (10:53):
That fish for years and it just keeps on going,
probably outliver us all, probably having to leave the house
to the fish.
Speaker 3 (11:08):
You know, can you be canceled for cruelty to fish's.
Speaker 2 (11:15):
Probably just forget. I meant that satirically everyone, It was
a joke. Just cover myself off to there.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
I am Glen Hat. There has been news talks you've been.
We'll see you back here again with another one tomorrow.
It'll probably be satirical as well.
