Speaker 2 (00:23):
Hello, my beautiful beanies, and welcome to the Being the
Weekend edition, first of yesterday's News. I am Glen Hart,
and we are looking back at Sunday and Saturday, because
that is how weekends work. Hey, Chinese warships floating around
the place. It's a bit of a worry, isn't it?

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Or is it?

Speaker 2 (00:40):
Are they just coming to invest from overseas? Because we
are putting out the welcome mat to those people. Awkan
FC makes the Wellington Phoenix look stupid and groover. Marta
is still grooving and they groove on into a Jack
Tame show. But before any of that, speaking of Jack Tame,
he's a dad.

Speaker 4 (00:58):
Now.

Speaker 2 (00:59):
It's weird, isn't it.

Speaker 5 (01:00):
Women's bodies Oh my goodness? I mean me and might
think run a bit faster, we can jump a bit higher.
But honestly, women's bodies to have the capacity to grow
an entire human being from his skinny little frog legs
folded up to his belly, to his tiny little fingernails,

(01:22):
to the lightest fur on his pink little cheeks to
grow him, birth him, and then having done it all,
having done everything, to immediately switch to nourishing him day
and night, hour after hour after hour. What can I
tell you about our son? Well, I think he's got
his mum's eyes. He sucks his thumb. His first music

(01:47):
was the Coln concert and he made sure to stay
up to watch Will Young and Tom Latham score centuries
against Pakistan. His name is going to be finalized soon enough,
and when he's bulked up a bit, he's got a
long list of visitors waiting to meet him too. After
five nights away, yesterday, I put our son in his
car seat and drove him home. His older brother ran

(02:10):
home from school and cuddled him on the couch through
the madness and exhaustion of the week, running on caffeine,
sugar and love. We sat there together a family and
it was perfect.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
I hope that whole car seat thing went better than
the first time we tried it and we didn't know
how to use the car seats properly and it flipped
upside down. So we had a newborn baby that just
flipped upside down. It was strapped in. It was fine.
Nothing happened. Just went upside down for it. And believe me,
after all the crazy stuff that happens to a baby.

(02:44):
Immediately before you know, coming out, there was nothing news talk.

Speaker 6 (02:50):
Has it been right?

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Now?

Speaker 2 (02:53):
How do we feel about China sort of floating around
and their warships looking out the window and seeing Chinese
warships there? How do we feel about that?

Speaker 7 (03:03):
Given the Tasman is basically a busy harbor bridge for
planes fltween New Zealand and Australia. I quite like that
information to be provided ahead of time. Please a little
bit more formally would be wonderful. The Australian Minister for Defense,
Richard Marlty, said that Australia would normally give twelve to
twenty four hours notice of a live firing event. So

(03:23):
what's going on? It's quite possible China is responding to
the Australian Navy conducting freedom of navigation exercises off the
Chinese coast a little tip for tat a reminder of
China's capabilities, with no one picking up the phone to
offer an explanation. Perhaps China sees this is an opportunity
to see what kind of political and military response this

(03:44):
unprecedented move generates from New Zealand and Australia. New Zealand
has sent the HSS to Kaha and a P eight
Poseidon aircraft to monitor the Chinese movements. Take that China politically.
Explanations are being demanded politely at this stage. Defense Minister
Judith Collins has called the Chinese actions unusual, but didn't

(04:06):
go so far to say it was a show of
force by China. But with China's continue encroachment into the
Pacific and a formalized security deal with the Solomon Islands
now in play, surely their intention is to spend more
time in the Tasman c Without a robust response. What's
stopping them? Colin says the present The presence of three

(04:26):
Chinese naval ships off Australia is a wake up call
for New Zealanders. It sure is. We've depleted our defense folks.
We're an isolated country that can't protect ourselves on our
own and we're very vulnerable to supply chains being disruptive.
Wake up call received loud and clear.

Speaker 2 (04:44):
How much we could spend on defense and still make
any effect on anything that China does. We're just their
plaything at this point, aren't we hope they can just
do whatever they want with it. Maybe instead of looking
to the countries like the US to predict this, maybe
we should just say, hey, China, it's fine what you want.

(05:07):
I mean, that's what we doing investment wise, now, isn't
it with this? If you've got the dish, come here,
we won't ask too many questions. Bill they're going to
put through Just cynically.

Speaker 8 (05:19):
Aren't higher wages are disincentive to overseas investments?

Speaker 4 (05:25):
They are if you are looking at a zero sum
game where you think that a business can only produce
so much value and the wages are a cost. But
if you look at life and business is a positive
some game where you say the business getting in more investment,
better ideas, better technology can produce more valuable, more innovative

(05:47):
products that people will pay more money for. Then you
can actually have it both ways, so you can pay
people more and make a better return on your investment.
And that really is how you've got to think. If
we just think zero some, then life gets depressing because
they're just fighting over scraps your whole life. If you
think positive some, how can we do better? Then all

(06:07):
sorts of joyful opportunities open up.

Speaker 8 (06:10):
I guess it's one thing to make an announcement, and
there has been the odd commentary about the government making
announcements that don't amount.

Speaker 3 (06:15):
To much tangible change.

Speaker 8 (06:17):
How quickly and how tangible do you think the change
will be?

Speaker 4 (06:21):
Well, what I've said today is that the Government has
made a decision about how we're going to change the
Overseas Investment Act. Now, yes, that that law still needs
to be passed through Parliament, but the government now has
a policy to do it, and the government has a
majority of the Parliament, so obviously we have to respect
that the law's not passed into parliament passes it, but

(06:43):
we're very clear on what we're going to do.

Speaker 2 (06:45):
It's so annoying, isn't it that people like David Ziemore
can't just have ideas and then they become laws instantly.
You've got this whole sort of I don't know process everybody,
you know, a majority of our elected representatives have to
actually agree that's a good idea and then it becomes

(07:05):
a law.

Speaker 6 (07:06):
That's annoying, right.

Speaker 2 (07:09):
Rollicking weekend of sport. Of course, I struggling to find
too many indipth interviews on how amazing the Chiefs were,
but no problem discussing how amazing organ FC were, or
is that how terrible the Phoenix were. Anyway, somebody scored
a lot of goals, even if it's not clear who.

Speaker 8 (07:29):
There was a suggestion that Nadamad I Know's second goal
in his hat trick actually deflected in of Logan Rogerson,
who also got a couple of goals. So who was
actually claiming the hat trick?

Speaker 3 (07:43):
Yeah, Logan is actually claiming it. It actually did hit
him on the way through, so Nada actually knows they
did as well, so he's sort of said, is Logan's
hat trick? But like I said yesterday, for me, it
doesn't matter obviously who's scoring the goal as long as
as song as the goals are going in the back
and net. But either way, both of them had a

(08:03):
wonderful game, And yeah, I suppose I might fight over
a little next week though.

Speaker 8 (08:10):
It's a terrific performance from your side, Steve. You must
have woken up as a pretty happy coach today.

Speaker 9 (08:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (08:16):
I thought they were outstanding in all aspects of the game,
you know, they they really showed a great deal of
desire to win that and really to go on with
the game as well and to continue continue scoring. That
was a good sign as well. You know, so obviously
the goals help. Obviously a little bit disappointed as well

(08:36):
with the goal we did conceivee, but other than that,
I thought everything was pretty much a perfect day for us.

Speaker 4 (08:43):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (08:43):
So they were going for absolute total humiliation at downtrout
and they're really beating themselves up because they didn't quite
a det that. Oh well, better light.

Speaker 5 (08:55):
News done news talk.

Speaker 6 (08:58):
Zi been right.

Speaker 2 (09:00):
So grub Mada's party music really and it sounds like
we're guys who make it. Why they make it? They
just like they have a party.

Speaker 5 (09:11):
I don't want to make either of you feel old,
but I'm also aware and it's almost what thirty years
since you guys started playing music together. Is the rush
that you get from being on stage, whether it's djang
or as part of a live performance, is the rush
the same today as it's always been.

Speaker 9 (09:31):
It's different, but like it's still there, you know, it's
still really exciting. It's like in some ways it's like
it's quite intense because there's that sense of like, you know,
we're probably near the near the twilight of our career.
Than the dawn, So you're kind of conscious that you
need to kind of you know, really kind of save
at these moments. You know, I guess we've got a
little bit more experience and you haven't got that kind

(09:53):
of that you know, first night nerve stuff is probably
a little less intense to me than it used to be.
But yeah, no, it's always really exciting. It's always sort
of trying to come to a new space and assess
the vibe and try to make the right decisions in
the heat of the moment. That's still as complicated as
ever been, you know, right.

Speaker 5 (10:08):
And thinking that you guys have supposedly retired three times.

Speaker 6 (10:14):
I don't believe the rumors it was to do with
the It was to do with the live shows, and
we we called it, We called it a day with
the live shows a couple of times and then made
very joyful comebacks. But the djaying has always been there
since the beginning. It's always been a kind of unchanging
backbone of the whole group of marketing experience.

Speaker 5 (10:34):
Yeah, yeah, that makes it. So what is it that
keeps you hanging on? What what keeps you in, you know,
savoring the kind of experience that you always have.

Speaker 9 (10:46):
I mean it's just you know, like it's done for
it's just a really love to be able to do
for a living, you know, like it's like we still
love music, you know, where music file files first and
foremost and so and then partly it's just that sort
of I think we grew up, like I said one did,
but for us in that kind of the weekend was
such a key part of our experience. You know. Pete
Tong used to say, welcome to the weekend on a Friday,

(11:06):
and that was just like what everything was about. And
I still feel like I live in that rhythm a bit.

Speaker 4 (11:11):
You know.

Speaker 9 (11:11):
I can't quite imagine not having the odd adventure on
a weekend. So this this is a great way of
doing that and getting paid for it as well.

Speaker 5 (11:17):
So that's perfect.

Speaker 2 (11:18):
Yeah, I mean, come on, guys, just when the weekend
rolls around, can we just forgive all the stuff that's
going on in the world and get our groove on.
I think we could disagree on that. Everything else will
start improving pretty quickly after that, I reckon. I am
Glen hat that has been the week in edition of Newstoks.

(11:40):
We've been as a pretty groovy one let's grove on
into the week as well. Let's really go to news.
